The Arts Directory Barbados Article written By Laura Lin Hutchinson for Business Barbados

August 30 th 2011

How often has the question arisen as to why as yet we haven’t an accessible and comprehensive directory of visual artists in Barbados? And how frequently has this sparked the response of how long overdue it is and how it’s about time someone put one together? Story in Business Barbados continued on…………… http://businessbarbados.com/industry-guide/export-services/arts-directory-barbados/ Link to sample book ( full book due out in December 2011) http://issuu.com/corriescott/docs/art_directory_barbados_bb Laura Lin Hutchinson Laura Lin has written features for most of the major glossy magazines including island Life, Maco and Shabeau. She did a series of catalogue portraits of various artists for the Art Collectors of Barbados and is the writer/producer of the award winning short film ‘Holding On’. BARBADOS ARTS COUNCIL GROUP PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION 2011 By Natalie McGuire

“ I want to get off the donkey cart” This was the vision expressed by one of the event co-ordinators of the Barbados Arts Council (BAC) Corrie Scott, in regards to their latest Group Photographic Exhibition. Curator Rasheed Boodhoo somewhat mirrored her comment, as he relayed his desire to free the artists from any sort of theme restraint in this show, held at Pelican Village from the 4th - 17th September 2011. And certainly it appears the only binding denominator of the works shown is that they are all debuts, being formally exhibited for the first time. So what does it mean exactly to “get off the donkey cart”? And how can a modest display of Barbadian photography aid in representing the continuous shift happening in contemporary Caribbean art? The first aspect could be to briefly look at the history of photography in it’s relation to art. Traditionally, photography was seen as a means of recording life. However, with the explosion of modern art movements such as Cubism and Dadaism which sought to challenge the perception of art, some photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz wanted to apply the same challenges, in a desire to move photography away from its mechanical associations and make it a form of this modern art. It was an ambition to capture a created reality, similar to but not exactly to the same way painters could. This questioning of the function of photography was arguably a significant step in merging it into other mediums of art, and so a photograph could be seen now as both documentation and artistic expression, a direct line to the perspective of the artist’s environment or captured moment. And these principles are certainly evident in the local photographs on show, such as the abstractly inquisitive Mushroom by Andrew Ward, whose eye for light and colour balance makes it an enchanting piece; and Andre Williams’ Homeward Bound, the heartwarming textures of the Hatian boat’s sail enhancing the picturesque scene. Andre also sends all his profits to charity, which adds a personal dimension to this work. Continued…..

Contemporary photography in the Caribbean however, although artistic in its execution, often seems to have the ‘tourist agenda’: a palm tree framing a beach, a painfully colourful chattel house with grinning faces peering out. Now this is not a negative thing, beaches and palm trees and chattel houses are definitely all part of Caribbean life. But they are not complete Caribbean life. And so it is refreshing to see pieces in this range from the conventionally conservative BAC which appear to ever so slightly challenge the perspective of photography in the Caribbean. Take Rasheed Boodhoo’s Old Bajan Chattel. It is the anti-iconic version of a much repeated image. Instead of a burst of pastel colours against a radiant blue sky, Boodho’s image is gritty, un-inviting, and downright haunting. There is no romanticism of the poverty, no welcoming smiles. And yet surely it is as much of a ‘created reality’ than the former? As much a depiction of Barbados? Another photographer who thought outside the box was Willie Kerr, who wittingly highlights overlooked aspects of life in works such as Detour, picking up on a strip of yellow street paint ‘detoured’ by the obstruction of a gutter grate on the road. Corrie Scott also pushed the boundaries of photography as a medium in her Blooming Rosesseries, which were taken on an Iphone using the Hipstamatic app. It was inspiring that through this she had commented on the state of commercial photography, and the stigma attached to using digital apparatus by the extremity of producing art from her phone. The result? Alluring prints with great quality, pieces which justify the commentary they accompany. It is the combination of talent and inquisition that looks past stereotypical Caribbean scenes and works towards getting “off the donkey cart”, exploring the organic expression of local artists as opposed to the expected expression. And that is a reflection of the current zeitgeist amongst many young photographers on island, who do not necessarily get exhibition exposure. But if an established institution such as the BAC can start to show inklings of a similar kind, then perhaps formal as well as informal spaces in Barbados can get involved in the groundswell of creative ideas that have been building up? [Photographs of works in this exhibition can be found on the BAC website: http://www.barbadosartscouncil.com] Natalie McGuire is a University of Leicester Art History graduate from Barbados. Through her writings she explores issues of identity and the Caribbean response to art, amongst other things. She also writes for ARC magazine's website and FRESH MILK's blog. 'Blooming Roses' by Corrie Scott. This series is from my iphone using the Hipstamatic App with just a 60watt bulb. I decided to exhibit these to show that photography is open to any camera and any interpretation (and any modern app). No corrections of any kind have been made on these images except for re sizing the image to 5" by 5" at 300dpi. It is as it was photographed. Printed with archival inks on acid free paper. Series of 17.

QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY Temporarily located at Pelican Craft Centre #12 on Harbour Rd, Bridgetown

‘JUST MEN’ You are cordially invited to the opening of the October exhibition at the Queen's Park Gallery at Pelican Village. On Saturday October 8th at 10.30am to noon there will be an Artists' Talk to signal the opening of the exhibition, JUST MEN; the public is invited. The idea for the exhibition came out of my impression that there are more Women Artists, Arts Administrators and Curators in Barbados than there are Males involved in these activities. There have in the last three years been more that one group exhibition devoted to Women Artists, so I thought it would be interesting to stage an exhibition of JUST MEN.Would any common threads, concerns, approaches be seen? The men vary in in age and backgrounds. They were not given a theme, but presented work to me for selection. To engage with the Artists in a discussion on their work to open the exhibition seemed to me a meaningful approach. Gallery Opening hours are Mon. to Fri. 9am -4.30pm and on Sat. 9am -2pm. The exhibiting Artists are Ashanti Trotman, Wayne Branch, Wayne Hinds, Ras Ishi Butcher, Winston Edghill, Carl Dottin, Adrian Richards and Omowale Stewart. They will be presenting paintings, Photography and Sculpture. The exhibition will close on Nov.5th. QPG tel.#'s remain 427-2345 and 429-3117.The Gallery is located beside the Harbour Road not very far from the Barbados Arts Council. It is next door to Roslyn's of Barbados and quite close to Sylvester's Restaurant. The closest parking areas are in front of the Arts Council or in the back by Fine Art Framing. We are not at Bagnal's Point Gallery.

Sheena Rose Ply Wood Project I had a lot of fun and a bit of stress organising the ply wood project. I asked myself “Would I do it again?” “Of, Course I will!” http://projectsandspace.tumblr.com/archive http://sroseart.tumblr.com/post/10788959673/projectsandspace-ply-wood-project-part-1 http://sroseart.tumblr.com/post/10788942344/projectsandspace-ply-wood-project-part-2 The Boardwalk on Barbados’ south coast is a host to many things. Entrances to restaurants, joggers, strollers, fisherman, crabs. But on the 25th September 2011 it became host to a stamped event in the local contemporary art scene: The Ply Wood Project. Inspired by an international public exhibition, Projects and Space founder Sheena Rose co-ordinated an environment where the young creative community of our island could display fresh works. The brief was to conceive a piece based around the main themes of Identity and Revolution, on a canvas of 10” by 10” block of plywood. The day before it landed on the Boardwalk, the works were moved around three other public space locations, making it a truly mobile and interchangeable event. …continued on http://projectsandspace.tumblr.com/post/10783605139/natalie-mcguires-review https://picasaweb.google.com/105714821715531443977/PlywoodProjectBarbadosSept2011

This building used to house the art programme at the Barbados Community College. It was the home of the islands' first black chief justice, Sir Conrad Reeves...and look at it now.....how wonderful if we could restore this and return it to the art programme as studio spaces for the final year students and for visiting artists from around the region.

MANIFESTO BARBADOS “What’s up with that shed?” That was the question that started it all, an idea to do something revolutionary and different, a place for the arts if only for a little while, a Pop-Up creative space. After throwing around ideas, we finally settled on the project; The Manifesto Barbados Pop-Up Campus and we pitched it to the Wendy Kidd the owner of Holders House. For those of you in the Arts world in Barbados that don’t know the name you should she’s the founder of the annual Holders Festival Season, one of the largest and renowned festivals on island. After hearing our idea she immediately jumped on board and offered us the use of the ground for free. And so the project was born. On Sunday August 21st, we got down to the business of cleaning the shed on the Holder’s Festival Season grounds in preparation for the upcoming Manifesto Pop-Up Campus & Lounge. The lounge will provide an atmosphere for artists to exhibit their work, perform, hang out, grab a drink, and watch a few non-Michael Bay films. As this project evolves and becomes reality, stay tuned to the site for updates, as we document the whole thing. The next move is to invite artists to showcase their best work (video instillations, sculpture, drawings, paintings, etc.). We’re aiming to have this project ready to go by September 23rd and lead into the Manifesto festival (October 15th-16th), which also will be held at Holders House. We need your help! Volunteers, Artist submissions and any donations i.e. couches, lamps, rugs, books, pretty much anything that will add to the decor . Check out some pics of the space after the jump. Questions? msg us on facebook Sign up to be a volunteer via our Get Involved section on the site. or email us at volunteer@manifestobarbados.com www.manifestobarbados.com www.manifestobarbados.com/manifestobarbados-pop-up-art-campus-lounge/

BRIDGETOWN FILM ACADEMY Our mission is to train and/or upgrade the skills of Caribbean people by conducting workshops in the areas of screenwriting, acting for film and television and digital filmmaking. In Barbados and the Caribbean our cultural landscape has evolved and we now sit at the threshold of what is for us a new frontier of cultural expression, the creation of a film industry. In addition, the world is now recognizing the Caribbean as a vast reservoir of untapped talent. In light of developments over the last six years, the Bridgetown Film Academy recognizes that we have reached critical mass in our effort to create a film industry in the Caribbean as a whole. We believe that it’s time for Caribbean people to tell their own stories to the world, and it is widely accepted that a viable film industry is the vehicle through which this shall be achieved. It is imperative therefore that we train persons and build capacity in the relevant areas to meet the demands of our fledgling film industry. In this regard, we believe that the Bridgetown Film Academy is the next logical step in the process. The Bridgetown Film Academy sees itself as fulfilling this role now and into the future. Our workshops are conducted by a team of dedicated individuals who share many years of combined knowledge and practical experience, and who are committed to the process sharing in order to help develop our film industry. www.bridgetownfilmacademy.com/
