HEATHER-DAWN SCOTT Heather-Dawn Scott was born in Chile and grew up in Barbados. Evoking past times of the Caribbean with her art Heather-Dawn has a faithful following as most of her pieces are gentle, almost bordering on sensual with her use of colours. When first back from England after art college there, her palette was very muted and more to the colour of the English countryside, but as her eyes focused on the vibrant Caribbean hues, she became more confident with her colours, and used larger bold brushstrokes to evoke a mood of past times. Draughtsmanship is important to Heather-Dawn and many a time she will draw with a paint brush rather than a pencil and on looking closely at her work you can see this. More of Heather-Dawn’s art may be seen on http://picasaweb.google.com/corriescott/HeatherDawnScottRecentArt# For more details please phone Corrie Scott +1 (246) 424 3965 email corriescott@gmail.com

3 BARBADIAN ARTISTS SELECTED FOR THE LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL The National Art Gallery Committee is pleased to announce its participation in the Liverpool Biennial with the inclusion of three Barbadian visual artists in the first Caribbean Pavilion. Ewan Atkinson Ras Ishi Butcher and Ras Akyem Ramsay have been commissioned to make new work under the Biennial theme “City States”. The artists along with six artists from The Bahamas and three artists from Martinique will present their work in the Caribbean Pavilion at the Contemporary Urban Centre, a major gallery space of international pavilions in the heart of Liverpool. For the twelve artists this experience is unique in that for the first time artists from the Caribbean will be collectively making new work that responds to the environment of the City of Liverpool whilst maintaining a distinctive stance on what might be called a 21st century Caribbean modernist aesthetic. The Liverpool Biennial opens in September 2010 and is one of the biggest contemporary art biennials; Barbados’ exhibition can be seen September 18th until the 28th of November 2010. The last Biennial attracted over 800,000 visitors from around the world; this year organizers expect to reach the 1.5 million mark. NAGC Chairperson Alissandra Cummins estimates that approximately 2000 people will visit the Caribbean Pavilion each day and over 200,000 visitors for the duration of the exhibition. Sponsorship for the Barbados artists was facilitated with the assistance of the Ministry of Community Development and Culture through the efforts of its National Art Gallery Committee and David A. Bailey MBE, acting director of the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. Sufficient funding support was raised from The Central Bank of Barbados, the Virgin Atlantic Airways Barbados Office, the National Cultural Foundation, International Curators Forum and the Andy Warhol Foundation to allow the artists essential time on-site in Liverpool for making new work. During this time the artists will further benefit by their interaction with regional and international colleagues as part of this immersive experience. The strategic importance of the Barbadian artistic presence at Liverpool is a direct outcome of the development projects the National Art Gallery Committee has been engaged in with David A. Bailey since 2007 under the Black Diaspora Visual Arts (BDVA) programme. As identified within the BDVA Strategic Plan Barbados’ artists must be seen to participate in major global art arenas in order to excel on the world stage. The Liverpool Biennial is such an arena where curators, artists, critics and collectors from around the world would see the exceptional work Barbados artists have to offer. Participation in Liverpool Biennale Caribbean Pavilion launches the September 2010 – March 2011 BDVA programme of local, national and international events supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation and partners - the Liverpool Biennial and the International Curators Forum. The next BDVA event is an international Caribbean symposium and moving image presentations planned to take place in Barbados and Martinique in February 2011. Themed around the lives and writings of two important Caribbean icons - CLR James and Aime Cesaire – the BDVA symposium will re-examine the ideas of these writers within the visual arts 21st century Caribbean diaspora context.

23 September at 05:00 - 28 November at 18:00 Liverpool Biennial http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=134834469892316 Three Moments In Stuart Hall’s essay ‘Modernity and Its Others: Three “Moments” In The Post-war History of the Black Diaspora Arts’,he revisits modernity through three historical art movements from the perspective of the Diaspora. In this exhibition, three moments become symbolized by three Caribbean islands; The Bahamas, Martinique and Barbados -ten artists selected on their ability to make work that responds to contemporary and historical global themes. For the first time artists from the Caribbean region are collectively making new work that responds to the city of Liverpool while maintaining a distinctive stance on what Stuart Hall might call a 21st-century Caribbean modernist aesthetic. Three Moments is selected and curated by Dominique Brebion (Martinique), Alissandra Cummins (Barbados), David A. Bailey (London, Acting Director National Art Gallery of the Bahamas), Holly Parotti (Bahamas) and Allison Thompson (Barbados) in collaboration with the ICF (International Curators’ Forum). The featured artists: Ewan Atkinson, Ras Ishi Butcher, Ras Akyem-i Ramsay (from Barbados), Heino Schmid, John Beadle, Lynn Parotti, Lavar Munroe and Blue Curry (from the Bahamas) and David Damoison and Christian Bertin (from Martinique) – were selected on their ability to make work that responds to contemporary and historical global themes. SUMI-E CLASSES WITH LEANDRO SOTO IN CLOUD’S NEST ART “Hello Art Lovers! People are asking me about when I will open a course in Sumi-e art in my studio. I am thinking that after my Solo Show -at Aweipo Gallery- this 18 of Sept. it will be possible to start again. I will let you know if you are interested. Mondays from 7:00-9:00PM at Clouds Nest Art Studio, St.George, Gun Hill. Phone 429 0496. If you decided to take a course is it normally 10 classes minimum in order to have good results. Regarding schedule, if you miss one week or more because traveling ( and we all travel) I will keep flexible. I can accommodate some changes if is it necessary in order to reschedule the missing class. I need to know in advance if you are coming to a class. Each class is $50.00 per participant ( Barbadian Dollars). You can pay this amount in front of each class, or in advance, it is up to you. If there is a couple that come together always, I can take $80.00 for both. Please note that I do the teaching with a lot of respect for this art as an spiritual practice: I will need your serious commitment in terms of practicing at home by yourself and doing home works. I will offer tea (and a good back ground music!) in each gathering as well as art supplies for the first classes, but you will need to buy your brushes, inks and papers, as long as you develop your abilities in the practice of this ancient art form that will be teach in a contemporary way. Please let me know if you are interested. Call me at 429 0496 Best Regard to all,”

LEANDRO SOTO
LEANDRO SOTO AT AWEIPO GALLERY Contemporary Art in the last decade is defined, if definable at all, by its location, context, i.e. where it takes place George Bauer Art Critic For many years Leandro Soto has been creating meaning from the spatial relations between natural and human landscapes, and the contextual results are significant in this case. For Soto, who considers himself a diasporic artist, displacement amounts to a creative strategy, as Bauer would put it: “a strategy of inquiry into sites of meaning”. After residing in the desert of the American Southwest for many years, Soto, since his arrival in Barbados, has been recalling the tropics, and his recent body of work reflects his new take on the Caribbean landscape. His art, characterized by a frequent engagement with different cultural contexts, creates a tension that puts the viewer in contact with the immediacy of things, infusing spaces with particular meaning wherever he happens to be working: a gallery, a museum, a stage or a public space. In so doing, he questions the boundaries among public, private and intimate spaces. His style is, according to Raquel Tibol, Mexico’s foremost art critic ¨… a vortex of colorful lines that knows no satiety .... revealing a visual voracity made of thousands and thousands of lines to form living patterns, simultaneously hiding and exposing full contours of beings and objects ...” This particular style, inspired by ancient Maya cosmology, consists an endless blend of vibrant lines into rainbows of colors that Soto explains as follows: “The world is woven with colored threads that come from the fire of creation.¨ His art is not only the repository of Afro-Cuban mythical archetypes. His pictorial space has also captured the forceful rivers of the Cuban countryside, the Lacandona rainforest of Southern Mexico, and the mighty Saguaro of the Sonoran desert, by superimposing layers upon layers of nature’s rhythm on his canvases. This time his artistic inquiry is focused in Barbados. This exhibition presents a challenge to viewers who are going to see their island through the eyes of an artist whose intent is to infuse Barbadian natural spaces with shamanic meaning. Will Barbadians recognize their own island in these paintings?

The National Gallery of the Bahamas for the first time in its history devoted its entire exhibition space to the work of an artist from outside that country.Barbadian Ras Ishi Butcher is that artist. The catalogues are available separately or as a special edition boxed set. Following the success of the Ishi solo exhibition “Secret Diaries” held last January at the Speightstown Gallery and Lancaster House, Holly Parotti, curator at the National Gallery of the Bahamas and David A. Bailey MBE, acting director of the Gallery, invited Ishi to show this work, along with an additional twenty paintings from private collections as well as from the National Art Gallery Committee Collection in Barbados. Entitled “Secrets Unlocked”, the show, which occupied two floors and six rooms in the Bahamian gallery, was accompanied by a recorded interview with the artist that was heard throughout the exhibition spaces. The Bahamian exhibition included a second catalogue to complement the hardcover 90-page publication produced for the show in Barbados. “Secrets Unlocked” received significant attention in the Bahamas press including two full-page, fullcolour reviews. The exhibition ran for 3 months – April 29 to August 6, 2010. Ras Ishi was recently invited back to the Bahamas to conduct a workshop for art teachers. Then he travels in September to Liverpool where he’ll participate in the Liverpool Biennial. http://bajanreporter.com/?p=16875&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign= Feed:+TheBajanReporter+(The+Bajan+Reporter)

QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY In October at Queen's Park Gallery, we shall welcome 'COLOURFUL FRIENDSHIP', an exhibition of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and installations by members of the Federation of Visual Artists in Suriname. The Opening takes place on Thursday October 14th at Queen's Park Gallery at 6.30pm. In addition to the opportunity to meet 6 of the participating Artists and view their work, you will have a rare opportunity to witness Surinamese dancers perform. This Opening is an event not to be missed. Please view the Federation's website and see the vibrant work from its members: www.suriname-fvas.org/. This is part of a Cultural Exchange between the Artists of Suriname and Barbados; hopefully Barbadian Artists will also visit Suriname and mount an exhibition there in the future. The 'Colourful Friendship' started at CARIFESTA 2003 in Suriname and has continued through visits to Barbados by the Secretary of the Federation Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi and an email correspondance between her and NCF Curator Janice Whittle. The idea was born of those circumstances. The exhibition continues until October 30th.

The Central Bank Award ROMAL JONES “The winning piece entitled Croc Bloc, and what was shown were five of the major/ more familar part of a crocodile. The parts shown were the Teeth, the Eye, the Skin, the claw, and the Tail. I choose these parts due to their connection to people, this connect was either fear or admiration. As well for my fascination with crocodile, being my all time favorite animal I had passion to want to be hold, touch or have my very own crocodile. This was possible thru the use of clay, I was able to successfully mold and crave out the crocodile's features. Essentially it was chunks of the crocodile, made from local clay , the pieces were sculpted in a way that they could stand as pieces on there own but would still reform the whole crocodile. “ Romal Jones The primary award offered was the Central Bank of Barbados Purchase Award which was increased in value to bds $7,500.00. The entry winning the Central Bank Purchase Award will become part of the National Collection and will be displayed in the central bank of Barbados. The winner will also be granted a solo show exhibition at the Queen's Park Gallery and an accompanying catalogue.

VIRGINIA TRIELOFF “Commonly known in Barbados as Salmon-tot retrievers or Sardine-tot retrievers, these dogs of no known pedigree, were 'kept' as a watch dogs but foraged for food in the streets, roads, alleys and gaps in both town and country turning over the dust bins (garbage cans) to look for empty cornbeef and other cans. In the Barbadian countryside where I grew up, they were called Cane Dogs, mongrels born in the sugar cane fields. They are the counterpart to the American Junk Yard Dogs or the Newfoundland Crackies. To view more of this series please click on http://www.trieloff.ca/id26.html

CARIBBEAN FILM MAKERS Caribbean filmmakers descended on Toronto in numbers for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) held at various venues around Toronto from September 9th to 19th. These filmmakers, some new to the craft and others experienced hands, were assembled by the energetic filmmaker and producer Frances-Anne Solomon and her colleagues from Caribbean Tales Worldwide Distribution Inc., a newly-formed distribution company whose mission is to bring Caribbean films to the world. Some of the filmmakers present included Mary Wells of Jamaica, Tony Hall of Trinidad and Tobago, Sharon Lewis of Toronto, and Allison Saunders of Barbados. In all 25 filmmakers from across the region participated in a 3-day Incubator Workshop held at the University of Toronto to develop and hone their marketing and presentation skills. The workshop was facilitated by Michelle Materre of New York and Tanya Mudaly of the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation. They went on to participate in several TIFF events including the ReelWorld Indie Networking Event hosted by Tonya Lee Williams. Ms Solomon expressed her delight at the strong participation of Caribbean filmmakers at TIFF thanks to sponsorship from UNIDO, Caribbean Export, Canada Council for the Arts, Invest Barbados, Caribbean Airlines and the Commonwealth Foundation. She said “It was exciting to organize this event and very gratifying to see Caribbean and Diapora filmmakers network with each other, make valuable contacts in the world of film and sharpen their pitching skills. I feel that Caribbean film is about to take off and Caribbean Tales Worldwide Distribution will be the spearhead of the effort to bring Caribbean stories to global audiences.” She went on to state “We will be hosting the Second Caribbean Tales Film Festival and Symposium in Barbados in February 2011 and we will be back in Toronto for TIFF in September 2011 with an even larger contingent of Caribbean talent.”

First Annual Caribbean Fine Art Fair (CaFA Fair), Bridgetown, Barbados March 31-April 3, 2011
First Annual Caribbean Fine Art Fair (CaFA Fair), Bridgetown, Barbados March 31-April 3, 2011 New York, NY, August 6, 2010: For the first time in the English speaking Caribbean forty-five galleries of paintings, sculpture, photography, fine art jewelry, drawings and original limited edition prints, exploring the cultural traditions of the Caribbean will be on view at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Conference Center in Barbados, from March 31- April 3, 2011. Though long known for its pulsating rhythms, its dance, its food and white sand beaches, the Caribbean has had a less known, but long and rich visual arts tradition. In recent years savvy collectors worldwide have come to appreciate the quality and value of Caribbean art. Last year over 25 million persons visited the Caribbean, and an increasing number of those are cultural heritage tourists seeking to acquire the works of the region's leading visual artists. As globalization brings our world closer and building on the successes of Caribbean-themed art fairs held in New York City, such as Art off the Main, the Caribbean & Latin America Fine Art by the Sea, it has become more obvious that the need exists for more organized opportunities for collectors to view and acquire quality works by accomplished Caribbean artists. So, for four exciting days, the Caribbean Fine Art Fair will grace the halls of the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Conference Center in Barbados. CaFA Fair opens Thursday March 31st, 2011, with a Charity Gala to benefit Haitian artists affected by the January 2010 earthquake and will honor one of the foremost artists of the region, Le Roy Clarke. An exciting array of art ranging from the traditional to the contemporary, the intuitive to the European schooled, the political and social to the whimsical- will offer seasoned and new collectors the opportunity to view and collect works from both emerging and accomplished artists. The impressive list of artists to be showcased includes Ada Balcacer of the Dominican Republic, Llewellyn Xavier of St Lucia, Sir Roland Richardson of St Maarten, Le Roy Clarke of Trinidad & Tobago, Philip Moore of Guyana, Ras Ishi Butcher of Barbados, Jerry Craig of Jamaica and Philippe Dodard of Haiti. This historic and pioneering Fair will become a landmark of Caribbean cultural expression. Event partners include Accra Beach Hotel & Spa; Coconut Court Hotel; Intimate Hotels of Barbados; Barbados Tourism Authority; Caribbean Broadcasting Corp; Laparkan Shipping; and Sagicor General. For additional information please visit www.cafafair.com or call 646-267-8831.
