‘PAINTING POETRY: A RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION OF THE WORK OF GOLDIE SPIELER’ QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY Temporarily located at Pelican Craft Centre #12 on Harbour Rd Catalogue available at gallery INTRODUCTION ( excerpts from catalogue ) 1965 was a pivotal year in the life of Goldie Spieler. In March/April she mounted her first solo exhibition at the Robertson Galleries in Ottawa; her husband Ted died in October; in December she paid her first visit to Barbados. “On that very first visit I fell in love with this country. I remember saying if only I could come back here to live for six months, I would be a whole new person.” (Joy Springer: ‘Goldie Spieler - She paints well too.’ Barbados Advocate Oct.12th 1988) Goldie has contributed also in the field of education. She gave watercolour classes at the Barbados Arts Council, as well as teaching Art in secondary schools. Most of all she shared her talent through her almost annual solo exhibitions in Barbados and abroad. Through her involvement with the Barbados Arts Council and the sidewalk Art shows which they organized, she got to know most of the artists. As she grew to understand and navigate the local art scene, her sense of fair play and her honesty would sometimes lead her to stand up for artists whose work she felt was marginalized. Her career continued to develop, taking on more of an international dimension. Her first solo show in Barbados was at the Hilton Art Gallery in 1967, which was very well received. The Canadian Embassy in Moscow acquired one of her paintings in 1970; her work was represented in collections all over the world. A 1967 exhibition in Ottawa featured many Barbadian paintings. Goldie does not seem to slow down, but continues to work with the same enthusiasm to share with her viewers all that she finds to be so special in the natural world. We see these gems through her eyes and appreciate them even more. JANICE WHITTLE

“Mutual understanding in the world being nearly always, as now, at low ebb, it is comforting to remember that it is through art that one country can nearly always speak reliably to another, if the other can hear at all. Art, though, is never the voice of a country; it is an even more precious thing, the voice of the individual, doing its best to speak, not comfort of any sort, indeed, but truth.” Eudora Welty, ‘Place in Fiction’

Dear Corrie, I hope this email reaches you in good health. I have been following the events on the BAC website and things seem to be buzzing in Barbados. I really wish I was there. I wanted to share some images of my work. I have been preparing for the final exhibition of my Master’s degree and applying for future careers. I am attaching images of some of my work that was included in the interim degree show last August. Although this is not the most recent work I have done, I think they best represent the recent development of my practice. This work depicts my conflict of dual national identity, and conveys my feelings of un/belonging. However, the installation of the paintings and collages was an important part of the exhibition which is not properly conveyed in the attached images. If you are interested, I can send more photos. I was actually hoping to bring this work to Barbados for an exhibition. Thanks for all of your time, Harriet Harriet Rollitt

MANIFESTO BARBADOS “What’s up with that shed?” That was the question that started it all, an idea to do something revolutionary and different, a place for the arts if only for a little while, a Pop-Up creative space. After throwing around ideas, we finally settled on the project; The Manifesto Barbados Pop-Up Campus and we pitched it to the Wendy Kidd the owner of Holders House. For those of you in the Arts world in Barbados that don’t know the name you should she’s the founder of the annual Holders Festival Season, one of the largest and renowned festivals on island. After hearing our idea she immediately jumped on board and offered us the use of the ground for free. And so the project was born. On Sunday August 21st, we got down to the business of cleaning the shed on the Holder’s Festival Season grounds in preparation for the upcoming Manifesto Pop-Up Campus & Lounge. The lounge will provide an atmosphere for artists to exhibit their work, perform, hang out, grab a drink, and watch a few non-Michael Bay films. As this project evolves and becomes reality, stay tuned to the site for updates, as we document the whole thing. The next move is to invite artists to showcase their best work (video instillations, sculpture, drawings, paintings, etc.). We’re aiming to have this project ready to go by September 23rd and lead into the Manifesto festival (October 15th-16th), which also will be held at Holders House. We need your help! Volunteers, Artist submissions and any donations i.e. couches, lamps, rugs, books, pretty much anything that will add to the decor . Check out some pics of the space after the jump. Questions? msg us on facebook Sign up to be a volunteer via our Get Involved section on the site. or email us at volunteer@manifestobarbados.com www.manifestobarbados.com www.manifestobarbados.com/manifestobarbados-pop-up-art-campus-lounge/

“My intention is to show the jeweler’s art in true perspective, where the design and craftsmanship are to be value above material worth of the metal; where the real beauty lies in an aesthetic sensitivitythat is inherent in structures and materials chosen without real regard for monetary value. For me, it is an attempt to ensure their daring, nonconventional and 'spiritual' character! Brass and Copper are generic materials (base metals), and I have used design techniques to enhance the organic process of patina. As this process evolves, the object becomes more beautiful, naturally” Tiyi by Design Exclusive Hand-Crafted Jewelry By Ichia Tiyi NOW OPEN TIYI BY DESIGN ART JEWELLERY SHOP, The first of its kind here # 12, Town Square, Speightstown Tel 252 0184

Fresh Milk: A Platform for Conversation and Artistic Engagement by freshmilkbarbados This venture is connected in spirit to the increasingly rich informal artist-led networks spawning from the Bahamas in the North to Suriname in the Southern Caribbean. The idea for FRESH MILK has developed over years of conversations with other practicing artists around the need for artistic engagement amongst contemporary practitioners living and working in Barbados who are concerned with the contemporary Caribbean space – which maybe in Bridgetown, Toronto, Port of Spain or East London. FRESH MILK is a space that straddles visual artist, Annalee Davis’ home with her working studio and gallery. It is literally a wooden deck – a platform if you will, that connects her private dwelling home with the place where she thinks, writes, and makes things, becoming a point of connection between living and working environments as well as between herself and others. BRIDGETOWN FILM ACADEMY Our mission is to train and/or upgrade the skills of Caribbean people by conducting workshops in the areas of screenwriting, acting for film and television and digital filmmaking. In Barbados and the Caribbean our cultural landscape has evolved and we now sit at the threshold of what is for us a new frontier of cultural expression, the creation of a film industry. In addition, the world is now recognizing the Caribbean as a vast reservoir of untapped talent. In light of developments over the last six years, the Bridgetown Film Academy recognizes that we have reached critical mass in our effort to create a film industry in the Caribbean as a whole. We believe that it’s time for Caribbean people to tell their own stories to the world, and it is widely accepted that a viable film industry is the vehicle through which this shall be achieved. It is imperative therefore that we train persons and build capacity in the relevant areas to meet the demands of our fledgling film industry. In this regard, we believe that the Bridgetown Film Academy is the next logical step in the process. The Bridgetown Film Academy sees itself as fulfilling this role now and into the future. Our workshops are conducted by a team of dedicated individuals who share many years of combined knowledge and practical experience, and who are committed to the process sharing in order to help develop our film industry. www.bridgetownfilmacademy.com/
