Dear Readers,

First I’d like to thank you for the many positive mails that we’ve received after the last edition. I’ve been especially glad about several suggestions in which readers have suggested topics to us that interest them. The topic “Working in Costa Rica” was mentioned to us a few times, so that we therefore decided to research for an article about it for this issue. I’m looking forward to your further suggestions. When you read this magazine, you’ll discover several changes. The event section now contains more information and there you`ll also find an overview about the best galleries and museums in San José. And we have connected our magazine even more closer to our internet presence: additionally to many articles you find further information on our website so that you can extensively inform yourself about a topic. This time a main topic is the environmental protection: the term “Eco” is frequently quite freely dealt with. The certificate for sustainable tourism, developed by the National Tourist Institute (ICT), doesn’t have to cause this reproach: it is indeed a very comprehensive certificate for hotels and tour organizers and contains a strict audit and also considers social components. Every tourist who chooses a hotel is therefore able to support hotels that have earned this certificate. Did you know that there’s a dripstone cave in Costa Rica? Our tour expert Christoffer Steffen takes you this time on an adventurous trip in the underworld on the lake Arenal. When you’ve emerged again, then you might be up for some music. Mo Ledezma lived for a long time in the USA and discovered his love for blues that has never let him go. zuerst möchte ich mich an dieser Stelle für die vielen positive Zuschriften bedanken, die wir auch seit der letzten Ausgabe bekommen haben. Besonders habe ich mich über einige Anregungen gefreut, in denen uns Leser Themen vorgeschlagen haben, die sie interessieren. Das Thema “Arbeiten in Costa Rica” wurde uns ein paar Mal genannt, so dass wir uns für diese Ausgabe daran gesetzt haben, einen Artikel darüber zu recherchieren. Ich bin schon gespannt auf Ihre weiteren Vorschläge. Wenn Sie dieses Heft lesen, werden Sie einige Neuigkeiten entdecken. Der Veranstaltungsteil enthält nun noch mehr Informationen, auch finden Sie dort eine Übersicht über die besten Galerien und Museen in San José. Jeder Tourist hat es nun bei der Auswahl des Hotels selbst in der Hand, Hotels zu unterstützen, die sich dieses Zertifikat verdient haben. Hotel prices dropped in 2009 about 14% Hotelpreise schrumpften 2009 um 14%

According to a survey of the online booking portal Hotels.com, the hotel prices in 2009 dropped worldwide on average around 14 percent. In Europe the travelers paid 13 percent less that 2008. Even better was the situation for tourists in the USA (minus 14%), Asia (minus 16%) and Latin America (minus 21%). It’s been noticed that the prices are slightly rising again in 2010. CRS

Wind Power for the Central Valley Windenergie für das Zentraltal

Whoever lives in the central valley knows the powerful wind that blows here, especially in January and February. But also during the rest of the year this area is rarely calm. That has caused the idea to build there, after Guanacaste, Costa Rica’s second wind power plant. When the facility plant from a subsidiary company of the government’s energy provider ICE will go on line in 2012, it will consists of 17 wind turbines, built in the mountains above Santa Ana. With the total output of 15,3 megawatts, it can generate the power for 5,700 houses. Then Costa Rica will have wind power stations with an output of 130 megawatts available. Two large advantages unify the wind power: While the CO2 emission from a thermal power plant is 1 ton per kilowatt, the emission from wind power is at zero. And it’s matchlessly cheap: while the kilowatt hour generated by a thermal power plant costs 50 cents, wind energy costs 9 cents. The new plant will reduce Costa Rica’s CO2 emission somewhat more than 42,000 tons.CRS

Und sie ist unvergleichlich günstig: Kostet eine mit einem thermischen Kraftwerk erzeugte Kilowattstunde 0,50 Dollar, so liegt der Preis für den Strom aus Windenergie bei 9 Cent. More Nicaraguans want legal status in Costa Rica The new immigration law, which got in effect in March of this year with its harsher penalties for disregarding, pushed a higher number of Nicaraguans to legalize their residence in Costa Rica. Between March and June, 3,800 new applications for residence permit were put in, this compared with the 2,200 in 2009. At present, 240,000 Nicaraguans live legally in Costa Rica.CRS

The US company Starbucks has only bought coffee in Costa Rica for its coffee shops for a long time, but the opening of branches is now getting close: a coffee shop in San Salvador should be opened this year. Worldwide the company already runs 16,728 coffee shops world. It’s possible that there will be one in Costa Rica next year.CRS

Cheap Flights, but Expensive Parking Lots

Whoever nowadays is lucky, can get a flight ticket for less money. But if he decides to park his car at the airport during his vacation, the joy about the cheap ticket can quickly fly away. The German travel booking portal travel24.com has scanned the parking lot fees in 17 German and 11 international airports. In Zurich, the weekly ticket can cost up to 151 €, in Basel 113 €. But the absolute front runner is Vienna where the most expensive ticket costs 588 €. In Paris one can park for 100 €, in Munich up to 250 €. It’s cheaper in the USA, e.g. in Los Angeles, the parking ticket for a week costs just 15 €. And Tokyo, with its 22 €, ranks in the lowest third. On many airports there are

cheaper long-time parking lots. But these are often just difficult to prebook and are quite often full.CRS

Die spanische Gesellschaft MAPFRE (www.mapfre.com) ist bereits in vielen Ländern Europas und Lateinamerikas aktiv. Die in Panama beheimatete Gesellschaft ASSA (www.assanet.com) verfügt über Niederlassungen in San Salvador. Auch sie bietet eine breite Palette von Versicherungen an. Ein Vergleich der Autoversicherungen durch Costa Rica Spirits hat ergeben, dass die Tarife der neuen Versicherer nicht generell günstiger sind als die des staatlichen Versicherers INS. Die einzelnen Tarife sollten vor einem Versicherungswechsel genau verglichen werden. Due to the new free trade agreement between Central America and the USA, the monopoly of the national insurance company INS is past. More insurance companies have entered the market in the last months and offer, along with automobile and household insurance, other products like health and life insurance. The Spanish company MAPRE (www.mapfre.com) is already active in many countries of Europe and Latin America. The company ASSA (www.assanet.com) domiciled in Panama, has a sister company in San Salvador. It also offers a broad range of insurance. Earning Money between Rain Forest and Volcanoes Working as a Foreigner in Costa Rica

Occasionally, you see the travelers thoughts when they’re waiting at the Juan Santamaria Airport for their flight home after their vacations are over. They wistfully glance at the evening sunlit Santa Ana mountains as

their thoughts slowly wander back home: to the cool weather that will soon displace the fall and to the work that one could imagine to be nicer in an ambience like here. And so they rush to a newsstand before boarding. On the plane, the just-now-learned Spanish is strained in order to curiously study the job offers in the “Empleos” column. Apart from this, that an occupation in Costa Rica mostly don’t have much to do with a holiday stay, there are a few things to consider before one decides to look for a job here. The wages are generally considerably lower than in Europe. The government presents a list of minimum wages that start at about 700 USD for people with a university degree. According to qualification and work experience, wages will also be paid higher than the minimum. A secretary with several years experience gets about 600 USD plus a thirteenth salary in December. To get a work permit, the future employer must be

known. Then the applicant must apply to the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería, Departemento de Permisos Temporales y Prórrogas. In his letter, he must inform about the following items: 1) personal qualification; 2) name of the company or employer for which he intends to work; 3) position that he wants to take; 4) salary; 5) accessibility during the application process. In addition, a letter from the company’s legal representative is necessary, containing further information about the job and the company. That is the case, for example, for jobs with specialized training (e.g. technicians) or when foreign language skills (e.g. German) are required. Worldwide, many companies gladly provide their products and services nowadays with a supplementary eco endorsement, even though the customers don’t often exactly know if the environment is really protected by this. In order to provide the tourists in Costa Rica with a guide of which hotels and tour organizers actually protect the environment, the National Tourist Institute (ICT) has introduced a certification with the name CST (Certificación para la Sostenibilidad Turistica). Recognizable by the symbol of a green leaf, it shows an environmentfriendly manner and the level goes from one to five leafs as the highest rank. Whoever wants to adorn themselves with this must submit to a strict and elaborate audit in which an extensive criteria catalogue is checked. Belonging to that is more active environmental protection, sewage clarification facilities, waste recycling and the use of biologically degradable detergents. The food prepared in restaurants is considered about the protection of the environment and organically cultivated products of local producers are positively rated here. Energy-saving measures and the related training of the staff are also important criteria. But not only internal measures of the participants are challenged, the external impact on the customers is also demanded, for example, information panels about the environmental protection and the correct behavior in the nature. And, because the social environment also belongs to the project, activities in the local communities are also asked for. This can be funding of

the library or the support of the local school. The preferred employment of local people will also be positively rated. The hotels and tour organizers appreciate this certification: “The criteria are, beyond doubt, strict and the realization requires much engagement, but I find it quite important that we as hotel owners in Costa Rica take environmental protection seriously. Auch bei den im Restaurant verwendeten Lebensmitteln wird auf eine Schonung der Umwelt geachtet, organisch angebaute Produkte von örtlichen Produzenten werden hier positiv bewertet. Energiesparmassnahmen und die zugehörige Schulung des Personals sind ebenfalls wichtige Kriterien. name came from the similar effect which both plants have. The Carpenters Bush is a small plant with bright green leaves and violet blossoms that only grow in the tropics. In Costa Rica you can find them them in flatter regions on open fields or near houses.

The plant grows in the rain forest. It’s a vine that crumbles along trees from the ground up to the treetops. Shiny leaves up to 10cm are on its thorny tree trunk. How could it be different in Costa Rica – when we speak about the underworld, we don’t talk about guys and dolls, but about an adventure in the nature, the caves of Venado. Whoever now imagines a cold, damp cave like in Europe, will be surprised: these caves near Arenal are wet, but also pleasantly warm. The temperatures are even one to two degrees higher than the outside temperature. – so sweating will happen. We therefore are dressed in swim wear when we walk on the 200 meter path to the dripstone cave entrance. Just a helmet, flashlight and gum boots reveal that we aren’t on our way to the beach. The entrance of the cave, in which a little river flows, lies between a few big trees. Already here it’s clear to us that a mixture of swimming fun and cave hiking awaits us. our guide, we find ourselves after a few meters in a large hall with many stalactites and stalagmites. Hundreds of petrified shells embedded in the crag are time witnesses that Costa Rica laid below the sea level millions of years ago. And not only us find this site interesting, bats, crabs, fish, frogs and crickets are also around here. In 1942 the cave entrance was first discovered by two hunters and, until today, almost three kilometers have been explored, 600 meters of that is open for tourists. But this part is fully enough. For more than an hour, we climb and creep over the rocks and through gangways and even partly swimming. But always broad enough and through a few large halls so that one doesn’t get claustrophobia. The caves are still very aboriginal and nothing is concreted or illuminated. And it’s really pleasant that we can rely on our place-knowing guide. In order to really feel the darkness, we switch our flashlights off. There’s absolute darkness around us, a very special experience. Perhaps with each group, Alfonso enjoys a joke by

frightening us with a “Bye-Bye, see you later” outcry. We quickly switch the flashlights on again and, with him, leave the Costa Rica underworld that, even without guys and dolls, is exciting and thrilling.CRS Useful Information

The Venado caves can be reached from La Fortuna in a bit more than half an hour. One follows the road to Upala and turns over to the small Venado village. For about two kilometers, a good dirt road leads to the cave entrance. There’s also a turn-off to Venado from the south along the road on the north side of the Arenal lake. This approach is a little bit bumpy. It leads over a steep and partly bad dirt road. The admission costs 15$ per person. That includes the guide and flashlight, helmet and gum boot lending. After the tour, one can take a shower and buy a drink as well as purchasing a photo CD of the tour. The caves are open daily from 9-14 o’clock; reservations are not obligatory, but are recommended for larger groups at telephone number 24788008.

ie könnte es in Costa Rica anders sein – auch wenn wir über die Unterwelt sprechen, reden wir nicht von schweren Jungs und leichten Mädchen, sondern von einem Abenteuer in der Natur, den Höhlen von Venado. Wer sich nun eine kalte feuchte Höhle wie in Europa vorstellt, der wird sich wundern: Nass sind sie schon, diese Höhlen in der Nähe des Arenal, aber angenehm warm. Die Temperaturen liegen sogar um ein bis zwei Grad über der Außentemperatur – es ist also eher schwitzen angesagt. Deswegen gehen wir auch in Badekleidung die 200 Meter Weg zum Eingang der Tropfsteinhöhlen. Nur Helm, Taschenlampe und Gummistiefel verraten, dass wir nicht zum Strand unterwegs sind. Versteckt zwischen ein paar großen Bäumen liegt der Höhleneingang, in den ein kleiner Fluss fließt. Schon hier wird uns klar, dass uns bei der Tour eine Mischung aus Badespaß und Höhlenwanderung erwartet. Mit unserem Führer Alonso finden wir uns nach wenigen Metern in einer großen Halle mit vielen Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten. Hunderte im Fels eingebettete versteinerte Muscheln sind Zeitzeugen, dass Costa Rica vor Millionen von Jahren noch unter dem Meeresspiegel lag. Und nicht nur wir finden diesen Platz interessant, auch Fledermäuse, Krebse, Fische, Frösche und Grillen halten sich hier auf. Erst im Jahre 1942 wurde der Höhleneingang von zwei Jägern entdeckt und bis heute sind fast drei Kilometer erforscht, 600 Meter

davon sind für Touristen zugänglich. Aber dieses Stück reicht auch vollauf. Über eine Stunde lang klettern und kriechen wir über Felsen und durch Gänge, teilweise sogar schwimmend. nichts ist betoniert oder beleuchtet. Da ist es schon angenehm, dass wir uns auf einen ortskundigen Führer verlassen zu können. Um das richtige Gefühl von Dunkelheit zu bekommen, schalten wir alle unsere Taschenlampen aus. Es herrscht absolute Dunkelheit um uns herum, ein sehr spezielles Erlebnis. Wahrscheinlich wie bei jeder Gruppe gönnt sich Alonso den Spaß, uns ein wenig mit dem Ausruf „Bye-Bye. See you later“ zu erschrecken. s ist schon eine Weile her, genau gesagt 169 Jahre, dass die Einwohner der beiden Karibik-Inseln Big und Little Corn Island von der Sklaverei befreit wurden. Doch heute wie damals feiern die Menschen dieses Ereignis mit dem „Krabbensuppen-Festival.“ Der Erzählung nach sollen die befreiten Sklaven damals zur Feier des Tages eine solche Suppe gegessen haben. Am letzten August-Wochende war wieder einmal alles auf den Beinen, um zum Teil mit bunten Kostümen geschmückt das größte Fest auf den Insel zu feiern. Überall spielte Musik und lockte die Menschen zum Tanzen. Wem dabei zu heiß wurde, der konnte sich an einem der Palmenstrände im Meer erfrischen. Kulinarisch war natürlich die Krabbensuppe unschlagbar, aber auch andere karibische Köstlichkeiten verwöhnten die Besucher. Höhepunkt war wie jedes Jahr die Wahl der Schönheitskönigin, die sich stolz den Photographen präsentierte.CRS

If you ask in Costa Rica for the bird that every visitor wants to see, then you mostly get the Quetzal as the answer. Its colorful feathering is actually quite gorgeous: his red, green, blue and yellow feathers glimmer through the trees. But to find the Quetzal that, due to its long tail feather is considered to be one of the very most beautiful birds, you need some luck. Guatemalas national bird likes to hide in the cloud forest and is at home up around 1,500 to 2,000 m high. Just a 1,5-hour car ride from San José in the cloud forest of the Cordilleras of Talamanca on the halfway to San Isidro de General there is one of the areas where it’s at home. It’s said to get up early because, in the morning, the chances to see the colorful birds are at best. Der Nationalvogel Guatemalas versteckt sich gerne im Nebelwald, auf einer Höhe von 1 500 bis 2 000 m ist er zu Hause. What is a Costa Rican going to do, who grew up in Houston, when he then moves back to his parents country of origin? He takes that with him which grew on his heart in his old homeland. It was the blues that had delighted Mo Ledezma in the USA. “Houston is the city of blues. bands play in a vast number of clubs. It doesn’t matter if they’re white or black musicians, all convey this typical spirit that belongs to blues,” Mo Ledezma tells and one sees how this awareness of life fascinates him. “The blues is often said dead, but it still lives and whoever was ever grappled by this mood stays true to it until getting old,” the musician says. Since 10 years now, he’s been performing with his “Blues Devils” band in Costa Rica, “at least once a week and preferable in small cozy clubs and bars because the mood comes over at best here.” When his body vibrates behind the microphone during the harmonica solo, then there’s no doubt that the blues goes through the body. “For me, there’s nothing better than to perform with my guys on the stage and play good old classics. Little Walter, Buddy Waters or the Night Cats belong to this. But we also have less known things in our program and they go down just as well. New Flight Tax in Germany Neue Flugsteuer in Deutschland

Whoever leaves Germany on a flight after January, 2011 will be charged with an additional flight tax which the German government resolved at the beginning of September. From now on, the tax must be paid for all flights from January 1, 2011. For flights up to 2,500 km it amounts to 8 € per flight route and the mid-range flight over 2,500 km 25 €. Most expensive are the long-distance flights to North and South America, Southeast Asia and Australia: each route here costs 45 €. For transfer connections, just the first route from Germany must be paid. The tax will be admittedly raised by the airlines, but it’s considered that it will be add to the ticket prices.CRS
