Almost all around the world, the construction of one’s own house equates to an enormous financial burden. That one can build a comfortable and modern home with bamboo, a natural material at a favorable price, was proven by the Costa Rican architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe with his prize-winning house. You’ll marvel at what’s all possible with bamboo. Costa Rica, quite differently than a lot of other destinations, addresses a range of tourist groups. There are those who specifically seek peace and rest in nature, others who just want to have a nice time on the beach and, there are also the adventurers who gladly weave their vacation with activities. In this edition, we again include a few exciting activities that one will surely think back on a long time after the vacation ends. Costa Rica and coffee belong together and this is surely why even more nice cafes have opened in the last years in San José in which one can recover from the city’s hectic pace. We present you a few of these in this issue. My favorite place is the cafe in the National Theater, where one can take a snuggly coffee break under an impressive fresco ceiling painting. First, I’d like to draw your attention to the south of Costa Rica, to a rain forest that, due to the engagement of a Viennese music professor and the association that he initiated, was preserved and even enlarged. Whoever travels there is fascinated by the variety of plants and animals in the middle of a true jungle. In this sense, Pura Vida!

Wer dorthin reist, der erlebt eine faszinierende Vielfalt an Pflanzen und Tieren, inmitten eines wahrhaftigen Dschungels. In diesem Sinne, Pura Vida!

People not living in tropical regions imagine Costa Rica as profuse green plants, dense forest and wild vegetation – even a real jungle. But what first catchs the eyes of the tourists in Costa Rica is the fact, that there is also an other kind of vegetation, totally different from the imagination. Especially in the first quarter of the year, after the start of the dry season, many trees defoliate due to the dryness (especially in Guanacaste) and start to flourish very colourfully. From a distance one can see the huge orange, yellow, white, pink, red and purple coloured treetops. The „Magical Tree Foundation“, founded in 2010, has dedicated itself to protect these trees and has published a wonderful storybook. More than 40 trees are presented by the most beautiful potos and explained like yellow Cortez Amarillo, white Ceiba Tree, purple Jacaranda and fiery Malinche among many others. The founda-

A New Volunteer Record in the National Parks Neuer Rekord bei Ehrenamtlichen in den Nationalparks

The volunteer environmentalists from within Costa Rica and abroad are an important help for maintaining and preserving Costa Rica’s national parks. Last year, there were more than 1,800 voluntary helpers who donated their time. They clean beaches and forests, protect turtles’ eggs at nesting grounds and are first-responders at forest fires. The Santa Rosa, Palo Verde, Barra Honda and Corcovado National Parks, as well as, the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes, were the focal points of their operations.

The times in which Costa Rican car drivers could disregard their speedometers are over. Surveillance cameras will be immediately installed on busy roads to primarily catch speedsters. Among other designated areas, such cameras will be placed on the routes from San José to the Caribbean coast, from San José to Caldera as well as on number of local city streets. And since the new traffic laws have been brought in, the penalties in Costa Rica are striking. For example, whoever is caught at a speed of more than 120 km/h will be fined $ 380.

Data Cards for Mobile Internet in Nicaragua and Costa Rica

Whoever in Nicaragua wants to use a data card to connect his computer to the internet finds two providers that offer a Prepaid Service: Movistar and Claro. The price for the data card, along with a 10-hour- credit, costs between $36 and $58. Simply showing a piece of ID is needed. A residency in Nicaragua isn’t necessary. At the ICE Telecom Company in Costa Rica, a computer data card can only be gotten with a contract. However, for a cell-phone, there’s the usual SIM-card as a pre-paid solution that can also be used to access the internet. With additional telecommunication providers entering the market, there will probably be more offers this year.

The New National Stadium in San José will open at the end of March

Neues Nationalstadion in San José wird Ende März eröffnet

It will be the most modern stadium of CentralAmerica and open on March 26th presenting various events. After just 22 months of construction time and costs of 85 million dollars, the stadium was built by a Chinese construction company. It offers sheltered seats for 35,000 visitors on its tribune. The start of the festivity will be the international soccer match between Costa Rica and China and the Argentinean national team will also visit for an exhibition match. As a highlight of the opening ceremonies, a concert of the singer Shakira awaits the music fans on April 10th.

New Hotels in the San José Metropolitan Area Neue Hotels im Großraum San José

The selection of hotel rooms for central valley visitors in the next two years will considerably rise when planned hotel projects are finished. Altogether, 9 new hotels will be built. This new crop will include the following. A Hilton Hotel with 300 rooms in San Rafael de Alajuela, a hotel of the City Express chain that is expected to open at the end of 2011 with 134 rooms and a second is planned for 2012. In April of this year, the new Holiday Inn commences operation in Escazu with 160 rooms. Hotel Courtyard is planning for 2012. At the beginning of 2012, the Starwood Hotel chain will bring a new property in Santa Ana into the market.

Als Höhepunkt der Eröffnungsfeiern erwartet die Musikfans ein Konzert der Sängerin Shakira am 10. April.

Canyoneering Lost Canyon Adventures

A tour through a canyon with waterfalls promises swift adventure and we won’t be disappointed. Water is our permanent companion on this tour: rappelling over the waterfall, jumping into and running through water up to our bellybuttons. This style of engaging the wet element is called “Canyoneering”. On the west side of the Arenal, we track through the “Lost Canyon” in dense rain forest. The guide of Desafio Adventure Company binds us with a secure climbing harness on a cable and lowers us down a few meters over the first small waterfall. None of us stay dry here, but it’s really muggy in the jungle and we’re appreciative of the refreshment. Over stones and through small gullies, we wade and jump through the chilly wetness. Walls clad with dense greenery are on the left and right. The canyon’s name now truly resonates within me because one can really feel lost here, especially where the river suddenly disappears into the depth of the canyon. We cautiously remain standing on

the edge, looking down, dizzy. Should we go down there? The guide stands 50 meters lower and gives the signal. Quite carefully, I cling to the cable and at first slowly slide, timidly sinking downward, but then I feel a rush of confidence and let myself zoom down. With a specific metal ring called an “Eight” due to its shape, I can control my rappelling tempo. There’s much, much air whirling around the soles of my feet. How’s that for a feeling of flying through the rain forest, rappelling with my feet in the waterfall, having dense greenery around me?! Now, I’m back on the ground again but, it’s still not over; further surprises follow. We take a small jump into the water basin and shower under a mini waterfall. Afterwards, we rappel down over another small waterfall and we water pros can’t be shaken anymore – until we reach a platform. With bated breath, I go to the edge. It goes 70 meters down. Who doesn’t get queasy here? As soon as I hang on the cable in the air, all my fears are gone. I again enjoy the nature all

around me on my 70 meter jungle flight! I’m filled with passion, in a great mood and completely wet! What an exhilarating, refreshing experience in the warm jungle – with water in all of its varieties. ine Tour durch einen Canyon mit Wasserfällen verspricht ein spritziges Abenteuer, und wir werden nicht enttäuscht: Das Wasser ist unser ständiger Begleiter auf dieser Tour: Über Wasserfälle abseilen, im Wasserfall duschen, ins Wasser springen und bis zum Bauchnabel durchs Wasser laufen. „Canyoneering“ nennt sich diese Art,

Vor allem als wir an die Stelle kommen, wo der Fluss plötzlich in der Tiefe verschwindet. Vorsichtig bleiben wir an der Kante stehen und blicken hinunter, in die schwindelerregende Tiefe.

Im sicheren Klettergurt bindet uns der Führer von Desafio Adventure Company ins Seil und lässt uns den ersten kleinen Übungswasserfall von ein paar Metern hinunter. Schon hier bleibt keiner von uns trocken, doch im Dschungel ist es schwül und so sind wir über die Erfrischung froh. Über Steine und durch schmale Rinnen geht es watend und springend durchs kühle Nass.

Hier soll es runter gehen? 50 Meter tiefer steht der Führer und gibt das Zeichen. Ganz vorsichtig hänge ich mich ins Seil und rutsche langsam daran runter. Mit einem speziellen Metallring, wegen seiner Form „Acht“ genannt, kann ich mein Abseiltempo steuern. Unter meinen Sohlen ist viel, viel Luft. Erst senke ich mich ganz zaghaft herab, doch dann gewinne ich Vertrauen in die Sache und lasse mich runtersausen. Was für ein Gefühl durch den Regenwald zu fliegen, mit den Füßen COSTA RI CA SPIRITS 1/2 0 1 1

am Wasserfall abstoßend, um mich herum dichtes Grün und schon bin ich wieder am Boden. Doch es ist noch nicht vorbei. Weitere Überraschungen folgen. Eine kleine Stufe hinunter springen wir in ein Wasserbecken und duschen unter einem Mini-Wasserfall. Danach seilen wir nochmal ein paar Meter über einen weiteren kleinen Wasserfall ab, doch uns Wasser-Profis kann nichts mehr erschüttern – bis wir an eine Plattform kommen. Mit angehaltenem Atem gehe ich zum Rand. 70 Meter geht es hier runter. Wem wird es hier nicht mulmig. Doch sobald ich im Seil in der Luft hänge ist alle Angst vorüber. Jetzt genieße ich nochmal die Natur auf 70 Metern Dschungelflug. Nach Lust und Laune gleite ich mal langsam, mal schnell nach unten und komme schließlich auf den Boden der Tatsachen zurück. „Lost Canyon“, ich bin komplett nass, was für ein erfrischendes Erlebnis im warmen Dschungel – Wasser in all seinen Spielarten. Und danach warten eine Dusche und unsere trockene Ersatzkleidung, die wir schon mitgebracht haben. There are many ways to drift down a river. One of the most exciting is surely tubing: halfway lying on a rubber tube that is like a tire and halfway sitting in it, cruising down the river: Again and again, one wangles around. Sometimes, it’s slower-going in calm waters. The speed then increases again and the riverbed gets steeper. Lushly green forests form a picturesque periphery for the adventure. It was relaxing for a while again and then the tempo quite suddenly picks up and the tube whooshes towards the next riffle. Rocks tower out of the water but, the tube has its own buffer-zone like a bumper car, and the tube is pushed into another direction, yet again. Sometimes the journey goes forward then, backward and in circles, like a spinning top whirling down river. Whitewater is pure. um die eigene Achse, mal geht es langsamer in ruhigerem Wasser, dann steigt die Geschwindigkeit wieder, das Flussbett wird steiler. Saftige grüne Wälder bilden eine malerische Umgebung für das Abentuer. Gerade noch ging es entspannt dahin, dann steigt das Tempo urplötzlich und der Reifen rauscht auf die nächste Stromschnelle zu. Felsen ragen aus dem Wasser heraus, aber die GummiKnautschzone ist ein sicherer Schutz, wie in einem Autoscooter wird der Reifen immer wieder in eine andere Richtung gestoßen.

Die Fahrt geht mal vorwärts, mal rückwärts, wie ein Kreisel wirbelt der Reifen manchmal durch den Fluss. Das ist Wildwasser pur. Nicht auf einem Schlauchboot im Trockenen sitzen, sondern in hautnahem Kontakt mit dem Wasser. Wer sich nicht richtig festhält, kann auch mal aus dem Reifen fallen, aber dafür trägt man Schwimmweste und Helm. Am Ufer und im Fluss stehen genügend Helfer, die einen wieder mit seinem Gummischlauch zusammenbringen. Seile sind quer über den Fluss gespannt, so dass man sich dort festhalten und

auch mal eine Pause zum Verschnaufen einlegen kann. Kurz vor Schluss kommt nochmal eine richtig steile Stufe durch einen kleinen Canon, der Adrenalinspiegel steigt hier zum letzten Mal richtig an, dann ist das Ziel erreicht und mehr als eine Stunde und acht Kilometer auf dem Rio Colorado sind geschafft. It was love on the first sight as Michael Schnitzler, the Viennese music professor and well-known violinist bought a cabin on Golfo Dulce 20 years ago in order to spend his vacations there. He was fascinated by the Esquinas rain forest and the variety and tropical virgin nature in Costa Rica’s southern part. He noticed that this paradise was threatened to be irretrievably lost through deforestation. In order to do help prevent this, he founded the association “Rain Forest of the Austrians” (www.regenwald.at.) which, since that time, has focused on buying plots of land and preserving them as rain forest. The Esquinas rain forest is a part of the biological corridor, Osa, around Golfo Dulce. It’s one of the last surviving deep rain forests on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Whoever visits this rain forest can find 180 tree species, 3000 plant species, 320 bird species and rare animals like jaguars, ocelots and macaws.

enlarged and the association took on research and sustainable area development. A biological research station run by the University of Vienna had been established (www.lagamba.at), preservers are paid and a re-launch project for macaws, a protection project for feral cats and the community are also sponsored. It’s just been an hour since the airplane left Managua as the island slowly comes into view in the distance. A long, white sandy beach, colorfully painted houses and green hills appear. The plane lands on the runway that is skirted with palm trees and, after a few minutes, stops at the small terminal building. A few locals and a dozen tourists exit and feel the pleasantly fresh ocean breeze blow on their faces. Actually, it’s high season now on Big Corn Island but, it doesn’t feel much like it. There’s just a handful of hotels and these fit unobtrusively into the landscape. Fishermen sit relaxed on the shore and wait until it’s time go out on the sea and catch rock lobsters and other delicacies. The life on the island is easy-going and as a visitor, one has the feeling that it’s always Sunday here. There are just a few private cars. Taxis and two buses are the preferred means of transportation on the island’s roads. A small boat of water sportsmen just left for the best-known diving area, Blowing Rock. As the evening starts, tourists and locals meet in the few bars on the beach. Private Autos gibt es nur wenige, Taxis und zwei Busse, die auf der um die Insel führenden Strasse unterwegs sind, sind die beliebtesten Transportmöglichkeiten. Gerade fährt eine kleines Boot mit Wassersportlern zum bekanntesten Tauchgebiet hinaus, dem Blowing Rock. Als es Abend wird, treffen sich Touristen und Einheimische in den wenigen Lokalen am Strand, um unter einem atemberaubenden Sternenhimmel und mit einem kühlen Bier dem Meeresrauschen zuzuhören und sich ihre Erlebnisse zu erzählen. Vom Norden der Insel aus sieht man die Lichter der Nachbarinsel Little Corn Island leuchten. Der Wind lässt die Palmen im Wind schaukeln, während der Mond auf die Wellen scheint, die sich am Riff kräuseln. Ceramics from the Pre-Columbian era are a significant part of both Nicaraguan identity and the country´s rich history. The Spaniards destroyed a lot of these artifacts during the effort to convert the natives to Christianity however, luckily many served as grave goods and therefore were saved.

But, before the pottery could be visited in Granada’s museum “Mi Museo”, the founder had to endure a small odyssey. Peder Kolind has lived in Granada for years, made the city his second home and has been ac-

tive in diverse social projects. In 2001, the Dane had the idea to provide Nicaraguans access to their rich history by way of a museum. “I knew that many of these valuable ce-

ramics were kept in private possession. In order to make them available for the public, I offered to buy the ceramics. And, within a short period, I had 2,000 pieces collected,â&#x20AC;? tells Peder Kolind while standing in the museum, happy about a current group of Nicaraguan visitors. Unfortunately, instead of opening his museum, he went to jail for three days and his exhibition was seized. He was accused of planning to export the pieces, which is strictly prohibited and was never his purpose. Eventually, this was confirmed by several court decisions and he was discharged of all accusations. Three years later he reclaimed the confiscated pieces and could open the museum. The ceramics offer a fascinating insight into Pre-Columbian history of the area. Every 3 months, new special theme exhibitions are assembled from the now, 7000-piece collection. The gods in the PreColumbian era, the dominion of women, grave goods, tattoos, hairstyles, clothing and many other issues of life back then are the subjects of these exhibitions.

Pieces are restored in Mi Museoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own workshop and also registered, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture. Every year, more than 10,000 visitors avail themselves of the opportunity to take a trip into the period from 500 BC to 1500 AD . The local museum guides put special emphasis on offering each visitor an appropriate explanation, aiming to discuss the history in a comprehensible manner. Von den Spaniern wurden viele zerstört, da sie die Eingeborenen zum Christentum bekehren wollten. Aber zum Glück dienten viele Keramiken als Grabbeigaben und wurden so gerettet. Doch bis sie in dem Museum „Mi Museo“ in Granada besichtigt werden konnten, musste der Gründer eine kleine Odyssey hinter sich bringen.

2001 entstand bei dem Dänen Peder Kolind die Idee, den Nicaraguanern durch ein Museum Zugang zu ihrer reichen Geschichte zu geben. Seit Jahren lebt er in Granada und hat die Stadt zu seiner zweiten Heimat gemacht, in der er sich auch vielfätlig sozial engagiert. „Ich wußte, dass sich viele dieser wertvollen Keramiken in Privatbesitz befanden. Um sie für die Öf-

Nicaragua fentlichkeit zu gewinnen, bot ich an, die Keramiken zu kaufen. Und innerhalb kurzer Zeit hatte ich 2000 Stücke beisammen,“ erzählt Peder Kolind, während er im Museum steht und sich über eine Gruppe nicaraguanischer Besucher freut. Doch anstatt nun das Museum eröffnen zu können, landete er für 3 Tage im Gefängnis, seine Ausstellung wurde konfisziert. Man warf ihm vor, dass er die Stücke exportieren wollte, was verboten ist. Doch

dies hatte er nie im Sinn, was auch letztendlich durch mehrere Gerichtsinstanzen festgestellt wurde, so dass er von allen Vorwürfen freigesprochen wurde. Nach drei Jahren bekam er die beschlagnahmten Keramiken wieder zurück und konnte sich nun an die Eröffnung des Museums machen. Die Keramiken geben einen faszinierenden Einblick in die präkolumbiansche Geschichte, alle drei Monate werden aus der 7000

Stück zählenden Sammlung neue Ausstellungen unter einem Thema zusammen gestellt.

Die Götter in der präkolumbianischen Zeit, die Herrschaft der Frauen, Grabbeigaben, Tatoos, Frisuren und

Kleidung und viele andere Bereiche aus dem damaligen Leben lauten die Mottos dieser Ausstellungen. In einer eigenen Wertkstatt werden Stücke restauriert und in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kulturministerium auch registriert. Mehr als 10’000 Besucher nutzen jedes Jahr die Gelegenheit, sich bei freiem Eintritt auf eine Reise in die Zeit von 500 v. Chr. Bis 1550 n. Chr. zu begeben. Besonderen Wert legen die einheimischen Führer des Museums darauf, dass sie für jeden Besucher die passenden Erläuterungen bieten können, denn sie wollen die Geschichte verständlich darstellen. Kin-

natural atmosphere. Garcia had been fascinated with bamboo as a construction material for a long time and on trips to Japan he’d studied construction techniques using this material. And, because his family owns a bamboo plantation on the Caribbean Coast, the procurement of the material was no problem. This house was built in combination with other kinds of wood and it globally drummed-up attention in the architectural industry. “Since then, I get questions from the whole world,” Garcia says in an interview with Costa Rica Spirits. “There’s work on a few new projects but, I always tell the people that this structure must match the region. I’m of the

opinion that the bamboo should be used where it grows, therefore not in Europe but, for example, in South and Central America and Asia. Bamboo can grow up to one meter a day and is therefore a very cheap construction material.”

At first, when he received the message last November, he couldn’t believe it. The young, Costa Rican architect, Benjamin Garcia Saxe (30), had won at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona against 14 international finalists (including Brazil, Australia, Mexico, Singapore and Norway) in the category “Private House “. Now, he is worldrenowned for his Bamboo House. It all began when his mother’s wooden house on the Playa Avellanas in Guanacaste was about to collapse and urgently needed to be renovated. Garcia, who mostly designs modern structures like towering high risers in China or luxury buildings in Monaco for his London employer, Sir Richard Rogers architects, thought about which material would be most applicable to his mother’s neighborhood. She wanted a well-lit house that was secure and created a

as an architect, it’s a personal desire that there’s also reasonably-priced construction material for building beautiful houses. “I find it alarming that, in most countries, people must pay too much to build a house. They must often work 20 years and more in

order to pay their loan. That’s why I want to show that there are also more favorable opportunities in fulfilling the dream of building one’s own house. This can be bamboo but, also other kinds of wood or materials are suitable.” As Benjamin Garcia works on new projects, his mother enjoys the unique atmosphere of that bamboo house that made her son famous.CRS

Alles hatte damit angefangen, dass das Holzhaus seiner Mutter an der Playa Avellanas in Guanacaste kurz vor dem Einstürzen war und dringend erneuert werden musste. Benjamin Garcia, der sonst meistens für seinen Londoner Arbeitgeber, das Architekturbüro Sir Richard Rogers, moderne Gebäude entwirft wie Hochhäuser in China oder auch

Luxusbauten in Monaco, überlegte sich, welches Material am besten in die Umgebung seiner Mutter passen würde. Sie wollte ein lichtdurchflutetes Haus, sicher sollte es sein, und eine natürliche Atmosphäre schaffen. Benjamin Garcia war schon lange von Bambus als Baumaterial fasziniert, bei Reisen nach Japan hatte er auch die dort verwendeten Bautechniken mit diesem Material studiert. Da die Familie zudem eine Bambusplantage an der Karibikküste besitzt, war die Beschaffung des Materials kein Problem. In Kombination mit anderen Holzarten entstand dieses Haus, das weltweit in der Architekturwelt Aufmerksamkeit erregte. „Ich bekomme seitdem aus der

ganzen Welt Anfragen,“ erzählt Benjamin Garcia im Interview mit Costa Rica Spirits. „Ein paar neue Projekte sind in Arbeit, aber ich sage den Leuten auch immer, dass diese Bauweise in die Region passen muss. Ich bin der Meinung, dass Bambus dort eingesetzt werden soll, wo es wächst, also nicht in Europa, sondern z.B. in Süd- und Mittelamerika und Asien. Bambus kann in einem Tag bis zu 1 m wachsen und ist daher ein sehr günstiges Baumaterial.“ Was die Zukunft des Bambus als Baumaterial anbelangt, zeigt sich Benjamin Garcia überzeugt, dass diese Holzart für den Hausbau ein großes Potential hat: „Es wird entscheidend sein, dass mehr und mehr Gebäude aus Bambus im modernen WWW.COSTARICA-SPIR I TS. Stil entstehen. So besteht eine gute Chance, den Menschen an konkreten Beispielen zu zeigen, dass man mit Bambus auch in zeitgenössischem Stil bauen kann.“

Für ihn als Architekt ist es ein persönliches Anliegen, zu zeigen, dass es auch günstige Baumaterialien gibt, aus denen man schöne Häuser bauen kann. „Ich finde es bedenklich, dass

in den meisten Ländern die Leute sich hoch verschulden, um ein Haus zu bauen. Oft müssen sie 20 Jahre und mehr nur dafür arbeiten, ihren Kredit zu bezahlen. Darum will ich zeigen, dass es auch günstigere Möglichkeiten gibt, um sich den Traum von einem eigenen Haus zu erfüllen.
