With this issue, we would like to introduce you to locals and new immigrants in Costa Rica and Nicaragua who live the rich stories beyond the headlines. Among them, one of the most interesting Costa Rican artists, a coffee farmer, a baker who has transformed her zeal into a business and a musician who uncovered a love for leather design. All have realized dreams that had simply been ideas in their mind’s eye for many years. These articles demonstrate that mere hopes can take root, plans can come to fruition and that opportunities in Costa Rica and Nicaragua exist despite their small economies. In travel books, many national parks are marketed and described in very detailed ways and therefore attract large crowds of tourists every year. On the contrary, there are also smaller, often practically undiscovered ones like the Curu National Park on the southeast part of the Nicoya Peninsula. We will acquaint you with this park located only a few hours from San José and makes an ideal destination for a weekend trip. It is certainly no secret that Ticos like soccer however, the fact that there is an official supporter club of German championship record-holder FC Bayern Munich composed only of Ticos, was a surprise for us. We visited him on a Saturday as an exciting game was going on. In this issue’s segment of our series "Living in Costa Rica", we will shine light on the "Other Costa Rica", the Caribbean coast. Many fall in love with the area on their very first visit to the Atlantic zone. The year-round lush greenery and the relaxed pace of life are, for many, the desired contrast to the everyday hustle and bustle at home. mit dieser Ausgabe wollen wir Ihnen Menschen vorstellen, Einwanderer und Einheimische, die in Costa Rica und Nicaragua außerhalb der Schlagzeilen eine Geschichte zu erzählen haben. Darunter einer der interessantesten Künstler des Landes, ein Kaffeebauer, eine Bäckerin, die ihre Leidenschaft zum Geschäft gemacht hat, und ein Musiker, der seine Liebe zum Lederdesign entdeckt hat. Sie alle haben auf ihre Weise Ideen verwirklicht, die ihnen oft schon viele Jahre durch den Kopf gegangen sind. Die Geschichten zeigen, dass Costa Rica und Nicaragua dafür trotz ihrer kleinen Märkte gute Möglichkeiten bieten. Viele Nationalparks sind in Reiseführern ausführlich beschrieben und ziehen daher jedes Jahr eine große Scharvon Touristen an. Aber es gibt auch kleinere, noch vielfach unbekannte, wie den Curu-Nationalpark im Südosten der Nicoya-Halbinsel. Ihn wollen wir Ihnen dieses Mal vorstellen. Von San José aus ist man in wenigen Stunden dort, er ist somit ein ideales Ausflugsziel für das Wochenende. Dass die Ticos Fußball lieben ist sicherlich kein Geheimnis, aber dass es hier einen offiziellen Fan-Club des vielfachen deutschen Meisters FC Bayern München gibt, der nur aus Ticos besteht, das hat uns doch überrascht. Wir haben ihn besucht, als an einem Samstag wieder einmal ein spannendes Spiel zu sehen war. In unserer Reihe „Living in Costa Rica“ stellen wir dieses Mal das „andere Costa Rica“ vor, die Karibikküste. Viele verlieben sich bei ihrem ersten Besuch in diese Region am Atlantik: Die das ganze Jahr über satt grüne Natur und der entspannte Lebensrhythmus sind für viele der gewünschte Kontrast zur Alltagshektik zuhause. Wer überlegt, sich dort dauerhaft niederzulassen, wird in unserer Reportage nützliche Informationen finden. Aber auch als Teil einer Urlaubsreise kann ich diese Region sehr empfehlen. It's Saturday, 8:30 am. The tension rises. Any minute it will start—more than a dozen men and four women are sitting in a living room in Escazu in front of fresh coffee and gallo pinto. A few have small red and white badges pinned to their T-shirts. On TV, a picture streamed in from the Internet appears. It shows a soccer stadium in the Bundesliga in Germany and Bayern has the kick off. In Escazu, all pairs of eyes are directed toward the screen. The crowd’s chanting from the stadium reaches the Costa Rican living room. 220 000 members worldwide make up the fan clubs of FC Bayern -22 of these members, the only official fan club in Costa Rica. One would think that a few Germans who remain faithful to their old love of the hometown club are sitting here. One would be wrong… All members of this club are Ticos. "Fifteen years ago, my love for FC Bayern began," said Maria Gomez, President of the fan club. "On Canal 13, I saw games time after time, and eventually I started to get interested in the players and the club”. The 17th of February 2011 was a great day for the Costa Rican Bayern supporters because they got a letter from Munich declaring that they are

Alle Mitglieder des Fanclubs sind astreine Ticos. „Vor fünfzehn Jahren hat meine Liebe zum FC Bayern begonnen“, erzählt Maria Gomez, die Vorsitzende des Fanclubs. „Auf Canal 13 habe ich immer wieder Spiele des Vereins gesehen, und irgendwann habe ich begonnen, mich für die Spieler und den Verein zu interessieren. “ Der 17. For Costa Rican coffee farmers located in the higher elevations of about 1100m, now is the most important time of the year. Although colleagues

in the lower elevations harvest in August and September, the period from October to February is their busy time. As we go to print, there are coffee pickers with their baskets on the way to collect the ripe red beans from coffee plants. Approximately 150,000 of these seasonal workers are in Costa Rica this year and they will fill an estimated 41 million baskets. Their employers are 52,000 independent coffee farmers. Thanks to increasing worldwide demand for quality arabica coffee, farmers have earned good prices for their produce in recent years. With his farm located 1350m above Alajuela, the Swiss-born Roland Zbinden is one of them. For many years Zbinden traveled the world for a Swiss organization educating agricultural engineers. When it was time for retirement he wanted to remain active, buying the coffee plantation Finca Quizarrá appealed to him. His coffee always achieves a score of 85 points at quality tests and he now can refer to his product as boutique coffee. Until now he delivers his coffee beans after they are picked to the local beneficio where they are peeled, dried and prepared for export. The coffee is roasted in each of the consuming countries in order to respond to local needs and tastes, which vary from region to region as well. As an example, Southern Italians drink a more dark-roasted coffee than those in the north of the country. The demand for coffee abroad (with a traceable, exact origin revealed to the W W W. buyer) has increased in recent years (including in Japan). Responding to this interest, Zbinden has therefore decided that in the long term, he will prepare the coffee for export by himself. With the help of his daughter, Carole, who also participates in the business, he has set up a micro-ben-

eficio ecologico under the name "Le Jardin de Aroma" where the shelling and drying of the coffee beans happens in an environmentally friendly manner. The used water is recycled and eventually used to irrigate the coffee plantation. The shells of the beans are used together with wood from the plantation to heat the furnace. After work, he often indulges in a cup of coffee with his family and overlooks the farm and the expanse of the Central Valley from his terrace. He then enjoys well-deserved retirement, if only until the next day.CRS

Während ihre Kollegen in den tieferen Regionen bereits im August und September geerntet haben, sind für sie die Monate Oktober bis Februar entscheidend. Überall in den Kaffeeplantagen sind nun die Kaffeepflücker mit ihren Körben unterwegs, um die reifen roten Bohnen der Kaffeepflanzen einzusammeln. Ca. 150.000 dieser Saisonarbeiter gibt es in diesem Jahr in Costa Rica, sie werden geschätzte 41 Millionen Körbe füllen. Ihre Arbeitgeber sind die ca. 52.000 selbständigen Kaffeebauern, die es derzeit noch in Costa Rica gibt. Dank weltweit steigender Nachfrage nach Qualitätskaffee der Marke Arabica konnten sie in den letzten Jahren gute Preise für ihren

Kaffee erzielen. Auch der gebürtige Schweizer Roland Zbinden ist einer von ihnen. Auf 1350 m Höhe über Alajuela liegt seine Finca. Viele Jahre war er weltweit für eine Schweizer Organisation unterwegs, um Agromechaniker auszubilden. Als es eigentlich Zeit für den Ruhestand war, reizte es ihn, nochmals selbst aktiv zu werden, so dass er die Kaffeeplantage Finca Quizarrá kaufte. Sein Kaffee erreicht bei den Qualitätstests jeweils 85 Punkte, was eine hohe Qualität bedeutet und heute unter dem Namen Boutique-Kaffee geführt wird. Bislang hat er seine Kaffeebohnen nach dem Pflücken bei einem sogenannten „Beneficio“ abgeliefert, wo sie geschält und getrocknet werden und für den Export bereit gemacht werden. Geröstet wird der Kaffee jeweils in den Ländern der Konsumenten, um auf die lokalen Bedürfnisse eingehen zu können. Die Geschmäcker sind von Region zu Region verschieden, so

trinken z.B. die Italiener im Süden einen stärker gerösteten Kaffee als die im Norden des Landes. Aus dem

Ausland, u.a. aus Japan, steigt in den letzten Jahren die Nachfrage nach Kaffee, dessen Herkunft genau nachvollziehbar ist, d.h. die Käufer wollen wissen, auf welcher Finca der Kaffee geerntet wurde. Roland Zbinden hat sich daher entschlossen, langfristig seinen Kaffee selbst bis zum Export zu verarbeiten. Mit Hilfe seiner Tochter Carole, die sich auch um die Technik kümmert, hat er deshalb ein sogenanntes Microbeneficio Ecologico unter dem Namen „Jardin de Aromas“ installiert, in dem das Schälen und Trocknen der Kaffeebohnen umweltschonend durchgeführt wird. Das eingesetzte Wasser wird wiederverwertet und letztendlich zum Bewässern der Kaffeeplantagen genutzt. WWW.COSTARICA-SPIR I TS. C O M

Auch die Schalen der Kaffeebohnen werden sinnvoll genutzt und neben Holz aus der Plantage zum Heizen des Ofens verwendet. Nach der Arbeit gönnt er sich häufig mit seiner Familie eine Tasse Kaffee und blickt von seiner Terrasse auf die Kaffeeplantage und die Weite des Zentralen Hochtals. coya Peninsula. The first private national park of Costa Rica, as declared in 1983, Curu receives 12,000 visitors per year as opposed to Manuel Antonio which sees more than 100,000. Relaxing sounds of streams and creeks and the roar of monkeys are the dominant noises in the park. A variety of trails meander through the landscape of lush vegetation, dry rain forest, mangroves and beaches. Capuchin monkeys, locally referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;cappuccinosâ&#x20AC;? due to their coloring, are jumping from tree to tree. Spider monkeys, with their quasi five arms (the tail acting as an arm as well) swing through the branches of the forest. Occasionally, a deer peers out from behind the foliage and iguanas scurry across the natural floor. Less

frequently, crocodiles make an appearance. Scarlet macaws as well as yellow parrots and woodpeckers fly overhead adorning the sky with their beauty. Many animals use this park as their natural habitat. To see as many as possible, it is advisable to take a local guide. They have the experience and knowledge of what animals can be discovered and where.CRS

Während Nationalparks wie Manuel Antonio mehr als 100.000 Besucher pro Jahr zählen, sind es im Curu-Nationalpark 12.000. Leises Bachrauschen und immer wieder Gebrüll der Affen sind die dominierenden Geräusche in diesem Park, der 1983 zum ersten privaten Nationalpark Costa Ricas erklärt wurde. Eine Vielzahl von

Wegen schlängelt sich durch die üppige Natur dieses Trockenregenwaldes, zu dem auch Mangroven und Strände gehören. Capuchin-Affen, von den Einheimischen wegen ihrer Färbung Cappuccino genannt, springen von Baum zu Baum, SpinnenAffen mit ihren quasi fünf Armen (der Schwanz fungiert bei ihnen wie ein Arm) schwingen sich durch den Wald. Gelegentlich blickt auch ein Reh zwischen den Bäumen hervor, Nasenbären mit weißen Nasenspitzen rennen über den Weg und Leguane huschen über den Boden. Wer

Glück hat, kann auch Krokodile sehen. Rote Aras fliegen über die Wipfel genauso wie gelbe Sittiche und Spechte. Viele andere Tiere nutzen diesen Naturpark als Lebensraum. Um möglichst viele von Ihnen zu sehen, empfiehlt es sich, einen lokalen Führer zu nehmen. Sie haben die Erfahrung, wo welche Tiere zu entdecken sind. Vom Park aus sind auch Bootstouren zum Schwimmen und Schnorcheln oder Tauchen an der nahegelegenen Isla Tortuga möglich.CRS

Cognizant of great taste and value Angela explains, “We use no artificial additives and it’s always fresh.” She sells a man from Orotina five full-grain loaves of bread and a ciabatta over the counter. “I come here every week and buy bread for myself and my neighbors" he says in Spanish and then decides to take two pieces of black forest cake as well.” For most Costa Ricans, the

Auf eines legt sie besonders Wert: „Wir verwenden keinerlei künstliche Zusatzstoffe,“ erklärt sie, „und nichts wird bei uns aufgebacken, sondern stets frisch zubereitet.“ Einem Mann aus Orotina reicht sie gerade fünf Vollkornbrote und Ciabatta-Brot über die Theke. „Ich komme jede Woche hierher und kaufe für mich und meine Nachbarn Brot ein,“ sagt er auf Spanisch und nimmt noch zwei Stück Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte mit. Für einen Costaricaner eigentlich ungewöhnlich, aber inzwischen sind auch viele Einheimische auf den Geschmack gekommen, wie Angela Kock erzählt. In den Vollkornbroten wird u.a. Vollkornmehl, Weizenkeime, Sonnenblumenkerne, Vollkornhaferflocken und Sauerteig verwendet, und noch ein paar andere natürliche Zutaten, aber die bleiben Betriebsgeheimnis. Eine Spezialität ist das Kürbisbrot. Doch auch an der Ku-

chentheke kommt man nicht vorbei: Schwarzwälderkirschtorte, Zwiebelkuchen, Berliner, Nusskranz und einige andere Leckereien lassen einen jede Diätabsicht vergessen. Das Cafe hat mit seinen 20 Plätzen für alle Tageszeiten etwas zu bieten: Zum Frühstück frische Semmeln und Brot, dazu einen Cappuccino , mittags gibt es hausgemachten Kartoffelsalat zu Wiener Schnitzel oder Würstchen und nachmittags Kuchen und Gebäck. weifelsohne war es ein großer Fortschritt für die Straßensicherheit in Costa Rica, als 2001 von den Behörden die spanisch-costaricanische Firma Riteve beauftragt wurde, jährliche Fahrzeuguntersuchungen durchzuführen. Die Laufzeit des Vertrages wurde auf 10 Jahre festgelegt mit der Option der Verlängerung. Nach weiteren 10 Jahren hätte der Staat die Einrichtungen der Firma übernehmen können. Seit 2005 wird überlegt, weitere Firmen für diese technischen Überprüfungen zuzulassen, doch ein entsprechendes Gesetz ist bislang nicht verabschiedet worden. Im Juni 2012 endet der Vertrag mit Riteve, ohne dass geklärt ist, wie es weitergehen soll. Die Firmenleitung hat sich einverstanden erklärt, den Vertrag zu verlängern und die Untersuchungen auch weiterhin anzubieten, wenn es einen oder zwei Mitbewerber gibt. Sollte es jedoch, wie von einigen Abgeordneten gewünscht, eine Regelung geben, bei der eine große Zahl von Werkstätten mittels einer Lizenz diese Untersuchungen durchführen können, dann wird Riteve aussteigen. Diese Regelung würde nach Meinung von Riteve und vieler Experten erheblich die Korruption fördern, so dass ein wirtschaftlicher Betrieb für Riteve nicht mehr möglich wäre.CRS © Burkhardt Preuß / pixelio.de

When, in 2001, authorities commissioned the SpanishCosta Rican company, Riteve, to conduct annual vehicle inspections, it was a big step forward for road safety in Costa Rica. The terms were a 10 year contract with the option of renewal. After another 10 years, the state could take over the facilities of the company. Since 2005, allowing other companies to do these technical reviews has been considered but, a law has not yet been passed deciding on this new industry’s fate. In June 2012, the contract with Riteve will conclude. It is completely unclear how the state will proceed. The management has agreed to participate in the extension of the contract and to continue the inspections under the condition that there be only one or two future competitors. Some members of Parliament are thinking about allowing a large number of repair shops to conduct these inspections under a license system. Riteve has announced that if this happens, it wouldn´t be interested in this business anymore. According to many experts and the management of Riteve, this system would encourage corruption and that it would be impossible for Riteve to continue operations.CRS

Controversial Reform Will Raise Taxes Umstrittene Steuerreform bringt Steuererhöhungen

A new tax law supported by Parliament will bring higher taxes with it and affect many sectors of the population. The state hopes to augment revenue by increasing sales tax to 13% to 14% and even expand on it in areas that were previously exempt. Critics complain that these so-called indirect taxes hit all citizens equally regardless of their personal economic situations and feel that the best alternative is that the government focus on improving tax money administration rather than increasing taxation. This criticism is supported by the newspaper La Nacion that recently published a study wherein examples of alternate arenas where the state is not collecting its due were cited. According to the report, 53% of doctors, engineers and lawyers don´t declare their taxes at all and few owners of luxury homes valued in excess of $ 200,000 are complying with new property tax laws that were instated two years ago. In an act of desperation on the Internet in early December, the Treasury Department published a list of construction projects valued at over $200 000 each that had received construction permissions in 2009 and 2010 and have failed to pay their assigned taxes. This kind of public ridicule was a well-used technique of tax collection in the Middle Ages.CRS

Diese Kritik wird durch eine in der Zeitung La Nacion kürzlich veröffentlichten Untersuchung gestützt. Danach geben 53% der Ärzte, Ingenieure und Rechtsanwälte überhaupt keine Steuererklärung ab. Auch bei der vor zwei Jahren eingeführten Luxussteuer auf Immobilien mit einem Wert von über 200.000 USD verhält es sich ähnlich. Wesentlich weniger Personen als erwartet haben bisher diese Steuer bezahlt. Es ist wohl mehr als ein Akt der Verzweiflung als eine effektive Massnahme zur Steuereintreibung anzusehen, dass das Finanzministerium Anfang Dezember im Internet eine Liste der Bauprojekte veröffentlicht hat, die im Jahr 2009 und 2010 mit einem Wert über 200.000 USD eine Baugenehmigung erhalten haben und für die bislang keine Steuer bezahlt wurde. As a successful musician, Balo had already made a name for himself when he began designing exquisite leather goods three years ago as well. High-quality leather boots, purses, hats and mobile phone cases are now manufactured at his workshop in the small town of Matiguas which is located three hours from Managua in a mountainous area of northern Nicaragua. Leather processing has a long tradition in this area. A narrow, unpaved road leads to the simple house where Balo produces his goods with a staff of ten. Mustervorlagen werden gezeichnet, Leder wird zugeschnitten und Stich für Stich werden die Modelle gefertigt. „Es sind viele kleine Handgriffe, die letztendlich zu der Qualität führen, auf die ich und meine Mitarbeiter großen Wert legen,“ erklärt er mit Begeisterung, während er seinen Mitarbeitern über die Schulter schaut. „Besonders wichtig ist die Auswahl des Leders, die ich immer selbst mache. Danach wird es von meinen Mitarbeitern zugeschnitten und in Handarbeit verar-

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is differs from other areas of the rest of the country beginning with the weather. While on the Pacific coast dry and rainy season are clearly separated, in the Caribbean it is different. Rain and sun can be seen throughout the year, even if there is less rain in September and October. The weather conditions are responsible for the region’s humid climate and lush green vegetation. It isn’t just that the weather is dissimilar, the people are too. There are few places where the mentality of the inhabitants and a particular style of popular music go so well together as in the Caribbean with its ever-present reggae rhythms. Anyone strolling through the streets of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo, hearing this music resonate from the homes feels like all is part of a symbiotic relationship between the environs and the spirit of the locals. Brightly painted wooden houses, some of which could use a fresh coat of paint, are hidden among towering palm trees and colorful flowering plants. Cyclists pedal by leisurely as there is not much reason to rush in the W W W. C O S TA R I C A-SPIRITS.C OM

Caribbean. This is the famous attitude and grand attraction of the region. As one can’t overlook massive groups of tourists in high season in other more touristy areas , it remains

relatively calm on the east coast. Of the local national parks, only the Tortuguero National Park is busy. In others, such as the Cahuita National Park, you may never run into another visitor at all. Emigrants who choose this area as their new home differ from those in the rest of Costa Rica. Das beginnt schon beim Wetter: Sind an der Pazifikküste und im Zentraltal die Trocken- und Regenzeiten ziemlich klar getrennt, so ist dies in der Karibik anders: Hier gibt es über das ganze Jahr verteilt Regen und Sonne, auch wenn es bestimmt Monate üblicherweise weniger regnet, so. z.B. im September und Oktober. Diesem Wetter verdankt die Region ihr feuchtes Klima und eine üppig grüne Natur. Aber nicht nur das Wetter ist anders, auch die Menschen, wohl nur an wenigen Orten passen Mentalität und eine bestimmte Musikrichtung so gut zusammen wie die Karibik und Reggae. Wer durch die Straßen von Cahuita oder Puerto Viejo schlendert und aus den Häusern Reggae Musik hört, der spürt, wie alles im selben Rhythmus schwingt. Bunt bemalte Holzhäuser, von denen das ein oder andere mal wieder einen frischen Anstrich

vertragen könnte, verstecken sich zwischen hoch aufragenden Palmen und bunt blühenden Pflanzen. Radfahrer treten gemächlich in die Pedale, es gibt nicht viel, was in der Karibik wirklich Eile hat. Das macht den besonderen Reiz der Region aus. Wenn andernorts in der Hochsaison die Touristengruppen nicht zu übersehen sind, bleibt es in der Karibik vergleichsweise ruhig. Nur der Tortuguero Nationalpark ist stark besucht, andere wie den Cahuita Natio-

nalpark kann man häufig durchwandern, ohne dass einem jemand begegnet.

Grundstücke ab 1000 qm mit Meerblick kosten in der Nähe von Cahuita im Durchschnitt 12 USD / qm, bei direktem Zugang zum Strand muss man ca. 26 USD / qm investieren. Teurer wird es in der Region um Cocles, mit Meerblick werden um die 28 USD / qm verlangt, mit Strandzugang können es auch um die 100 USD / qm sein. Am günstigsten ist es in Manzanillo, für 2,5 USD / qm bekommt man hier Grundstücke mit Meerblick. Diese Preise gelten für nicht erschlossene Grundstücke. Wer bauen möchte, muss neben Wasserund Stromanschluss auch Genehmigungen der Umweltbehörde organisieren, was zeitaufwendig sein kann. Die Verkehrsanbindung nach San José ist durch eine gut befahrbare Strasse sehr ordentlich, einen Flughafen gibt es jedoch nur in Tortuguero, der von den Fluglinien

Natureair und Sansa täglich angeflogen wird. Größere Einkäufe, die über den täglichen Bedarf hinausgehen, sind teilweise in Limon möglich, für speziellere Einkäufe ist es jedoch notwendig, hierzu nach San José zu fahren. Doch wen diese kleinen Unannehmlichkeiten nicht stören, der wird sich hier wohl fühlen, zumal er den Tag mit einem Spaziergang entlang eines der palmengesäumten Strandes beginnen kann. CRS

His natural curiosity drives him. The interest to discover historical issues and to bring them into the consciousness of mankind through his own artwork. As well the interest in the art and techniques of other cultures inspires him. He uses a variety of materials – wood, oil, paint, metal, glass, ceramic, to express himself. Few artists in Costa Rica are as versatile with their work as Carlos Aguilar Duran. Recently, Aguilar Duran created a mural for the Parque Santamaria in Alajuela, which commemorates the events surrounding the year 1856. Back then, Costa Rican troops defeated the American adventurer and short-term President of Nicaragua, William Walker during his attempt to conquer Costa Rica. Juan Santamaria, who became a national hero, played an important role in what is now referred to as the “Second Battle of Rivas”. With this mural, Carlos Aguilar wants to remind Costa Ricans of this important victory in their country's history. He has also already presented his works internationally. Spain, Japan, New York and Miami were among his stops. At an exhibition in Seoul, he became personally acquainted with the art of painting on rice paper through relationships he built with local artists. He found that their favorite subject are trees because much forest was destroyed during the Korean War and many artists there express their emo-

tion for this theme that way. Aguilar Duran’s next series was motivated by this and he will present his work by painting on rice paper as well. Included in his repertoire are portraits. Many Costa Rican institutions such as the Supreme Court and banks have commissioned him to paint their presidents in oil. Everyone who believes that it is sufficient to make a painted copy of a foto is highly wrong. Aguilar Duran prefers a relaxed, personal conversation with the subject to capture the person’s character than a photo. His themes are timeless and his relevance will not fade. Carlos Aguilar Duran’s innate sense of wonder and creativity won’t allow it.CRS

Kaum ein Künstler Costa Ricas ist deshalb so vielfältig in seinen Werken wie Carlos Aguilar Duran. Gerade arbeitet er an einem Wandbild aus Keramik für den Parque Santamaria in Alajuela, das an die Geschehnisse um 1856 erinnern soll. Damals fügten Costa Ricanische Truppen dem amerikanischen Abenteurer und kurzzeitigen Präsidenten Nicaraguas William Walker eine empfindliche Niederlage bei, als er Costa Rica erobern wollte. Schlacht von Rivas. Mit seinem Wandbild will Carlos Aguilar die Costa Ricaner an dieses für die Geschichte des Landes so wichtige Ereignis erinnern. Auch international hat er schon seine Werke präsentiert, Spanien, Japan, New York und Miami gehörten zu seinen Stationen. Er nutzt verschiedenste Materialien, von Holz über Ölfarben bis hin zu Metall und Glas sowie Keramik, um die Menschen mit seinen Themen anzusprechen. Bei einer Ausstellung in Seoul lernte er die Technik der dortigen Künstler kennen, auf Reispapier zu malen. Deren Lieblingsmotiv sind Bäume, da der dortige Waldbestand im Koreakrieg weitgehend vernichtet wurde, so dass die Künstler die Sehnsucht danach auf diese Weise ausdrückten. Carlos Aguilar Duran begeisterte diese Form der Malerei, seine nächste Serie wird auch er auf Reispapier malen. Doch auch Personenporträts gehören zu seinem Repertoire: Viele Institutionen Costa Ricas wie das oberste Gericht oder Banken lassen von ihm ihre Präsidenten in Öl malen. Wer nun glaubt, dazu würde es genügen, von einem Foto die Person abzumalen, der irrt gewaltig: In oft langen persönlichen Gesprächen mit den Personen versucht Aguilar, sein Motiv und dessen speziellen Charakter zu erfassen. Das Gemälde soll schließlich den Charakter ausdrücken, der die Person ausmacht. Die Themen werden Carlos Aguilar Duran sicher nie ausgehen, dafür wird seine Neugierde sicherlich sorgen. Direct Train Connection Between The Madrid-Barajas Airport And The City’s Centre Direkte Zugverbindung vom Flughafen Madrid-Barajas in die Innenstadt

As of a few weeks ago, there is now a new train route running from Terminal 4 to Puerta Del Sol. The price is favorable at 2.15€ per one-way ticket. The trains operate daily from 6 am to 12:15 am toward the city’s centre and from 5:15 am to 11:30 pm toward the airport. There are stops at Chamartin (running time 11 minutes), Puerta del Sol (23 minutes), Atocha (25 minutes) and Príncipe Pío (38 minutes) railway stations. Trains depart every 30 minutes. In 2013, the AVE high-speed trains are scheduled to begin running directly to and from the airport as well.CRS
