services to report that her son had accidentally hit his head on a table whilst playing and was unconscious. she said he had been foaming at the mouth and she could not bring him round. however, when medics and police arrived the boy

was pronounced dead at the scene. he was transferred to the hospital where it was discovered that he had several fractures. the child had various bruises on his head and injuries consistent with previous and systematic assaults. the woman’s other son, the victim’s twin brother, was also taken to Alicante General hospital where medical tests showed signs of previous injuries. the mother was admitted to the

Loggerhead turtle rescued by Torrevieja lifeguard A loggerhead turtle travelled along the southern Costa Blanca to be rescued by the torrevieja lifeguard service. the young specimen had been released in La Manga del Mar Menor on thursday and made landfall in the port of Cabo Roig, Cala Mosca and finally at Los náufragos beach. the turtle is one of the 12 released after spending two years in captivity as part of a “head start” project, aimed at preventing young turtles from being preyed upon by predators as soon as they hatch. the torrevieja lifeguard service, the environment unit of the Local Police and the municipal biologist were all involved in the rescue of the young loggerhead sea turtle that, somewhat confused and unwilling to explore deeper waters, landed at various points in the south coast of Vega Baja during the day on Friday. Just a day earlier, on thursday, 12 loggerhead turtles had been released into the sea in La Manga del Mar Menor

from a clutch of eggs that was found in 2020 in ensenada del esparto, in the Region of Murcia. the eggs were collected and cared for in the recovery centre of the oceanogràfic in Valencia, where remained for two years in what is called head starting, a procedure that consists of keeping the specimens in captivity until they reach a size large enough to reduce (not eliminate) the risks of predation that would occur if they were released as soon as they were born. one of these young sea turtles, however, decided to take a very coastal route, heading north, towards Alicante. on Friday, she ended up inside the Cabo Roig Marina, in orihuela Costa. there she was rescued by sailors and released back out to sea. she was determined to return to land and once again took a route very close to the coastline so that lucky swimmers who were enjoying the transparent waters of Cala Mosca could see her with the naked eye, swimming

practically at the shore line. she continued her northward journey until Friday afternoon when the coordinator of the lifeguard service of torrevieja City Council alerted the municipal biologist, Juan Antonio Pujol, that the animal had reached Playa de Los náufragos. he was found by two swimmers who immediately reported him to beach staff. there is a protocol to deal with this situation, as the loggerhead is an endangered species. the environment unit of the Local Police came to take charge of the specimen, while the biologist alerted the team at the university of Valencia and the oceanographic. the veterinarians of the oceanographic centre confirmed that it was one of the specimens released on thursday in La Manga, so they decided to reintroduce the animal to the sea, trying to prevent it from staying near the coastal area where, just started the season summer, the activity of motor boats is quite high and potentially dangerous to the migrating turtles. Marine biologists and veterinarians agree that despite the difficulties inherent in the release of animals that have been bred in captivity, it is always best to try this type of introduction into the wild. officials have asked tourists and the population in general to pay special attention to the beaches of torrevieja, orihuela Costa, Pilar de la horadada and Guardamar, “because any night an adult female loggerhead sea turtle could come out to lay eggs.” in this instance, people are advised to call 112 immediately.

With RBL, RnA and RMA standards piped into the church by the torrevieja Pipes and drums, the service, led by Father Richard seabrook, got underway with a short hymn, followed by his welcome and introduction. Fr. seabrook spoke of the many friends that he still has in Argentina saying that it is important to remember the dead and injured from both sides, as well as those many veterans who, though they survived, still suffer from the affects of the Falklands War, where 255 British personnel, 649 Argentines and three civilian islanders were killed in the 74 days of bitter fighting. Following the exhortation, Bugler Mark Benton played the last post after which there was 2-minutes of silence in honour of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. 2022 children’s bonus announced Bungling car thief attempts break in outside police station Police in elche arrested a 49-yearold man a few days ago for breaking into a vehicle that was parked in front of the national Police station. not only that but the car thief had just come out of the police station minutes beforehand having been identified as having a hand in a recent attempted robbery. the incident occurred last Monday night, around 11:30 p.m. Around that time, a resident of Avenida unesco in elche telephoned 092 alerting police that a person was, apparently, manipulating the lock of a car door. When the Local Police patrol arrived at the scene, they did not find the alleged thief next to the vehicle, but they did find him carrying a metal grid that appeared to have been removed from a nearby drain. the man then explained to the agents that he was “looking for metal.” the agents found no signs of damage to the car, although they did

find a number of handprints from, presumably, when someone tried to force down the window from the outside. the man was transferred to elche national Police station for an alleged attempted theft of the aforementioned grid. he was released minutes later. While the paperwork was being processed, officers found another car outside the police station had just been broken into and were able to verify that the same man had been inside the vehicle and he was promptly tracked down and arrested.

Incidence of melanoma in the Alicante province is the highest in the Valencian Community the province of Alicante has the highest incidence rate of melanoma in the Valencian Community. According to data from the Ministry of health, the incidence rate is 13.3 per 100,000 new cases in men in Alicante, 10.8 in Valencia and 8.5 in Castellón. in women, the rates are 8.6 per 100,000 new cases in Alicante, 6.9 in Valencia and 8.4 in Castellón. For both sexes, the incidence rate of melanoma in the Valencian Community stands at 9.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. in recent years, diagnoses have been increasing - since in 2010 the incidence in the Valencian Community was 2.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and 2.4 in women. According to José Carlos Pascual, a dermatologist at Quirón hospital, this increase in cases is due to a greater diagnosis of the disease. the positive part, according to Pascual, “is that these tumors are increasingly being detected at earlier stages, which is allowing increased patient survival.” in the Valencian Community, the survival rate for skin cancer is greater than 90% when there is an early diagnosis. the emergence of immunotherapy

treatments, which consist of the use of drugs to help the person’s immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively, has contributed to the excellent survival rate. Pascual explained that there are currently dozens of types of skin cancer, “although the most common are melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.” When it comes to prevention, the specialist emphasises the importance of protecting yourself from the sun, since its harmful effects on the skin are cumulative over the years. “those who have suffered sunburn as children or young people are more likely to develop skin cancer as adults,” he noted. Checking your skin regularly, around every two months, is also important to detect cancerous lesions in time,

although “it must be taken into account that most melanomas appear in areas of the body where there was nothing previously.” Less common is that a mole becomes a skin cancer. Melanoma is a disease that affects more men (56% of cases) than women (44%). the mean age at diagnosis is 61 years in women and 64 in men. incidence rates increase with age, but are slightly higher in women up to 50-54 years of age. From the age of 55, the rates are higher and increase in men, especially from the age of 75. the mortality rate is twice as high in men (3.4 per 100,000) than in women (1.6) in the Valencian Community and increases with age in both sexes, being higher in men over 65 compared to women of the same age.

Plans for future University headquarters unveiled

Plans for the future university headquarters set to be located in torrevieja were unveiled this week. the presentation of the architectural drawings and plans were presented in the Municipal theatre by mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, alongside architect, Francisco Juárez, accompanied by the rectors of the university of Alicante, Amparo navarro, of the Miguel hernández university, José Ruiz Martínez, representatives of the Polytechnic university of Valencia and the Alfonso X el sabio university of Madrid. those gathered were given an overview of the the future building that will house torrevieja university headquarters and the new AGAMed offices. the presentation event was presided over by Councillor for education, Ricardo Recuero. eduardo dolón remarked that the facilities that Agamed occupies today are no longer adequate for the needs of the service, with improvements required in several areas, including accessibility. Faced with this need, torrevieja City Council was asked for land to be able to build new facilities. Agamed and the town hall began to work together on the project and, as a result, the town hall has yielded a plot of 487 square metres (the total usable of the new building will be almost 1,500 square meters), in the heart of the town. specifically, at the confluence of Calle Concepción and Calle Canónigo torres. the future building, being built at no cost to the town hall, will revert to the town of torrevieja at the end of 2028. All the services that AGAMed has to

provide, as well as the administration, technical office and management units, will be located on the ground and first floors of this unique building. the mayor said that torrevieja needs to continue its city project with addition of a university headquarters, where university lectures can be taught and a space that would serve as a central point of educational and social life and, by extension, will revitalize the surrounding streets. eduardo dolón also commended the architect of the preliminary project, Francisco Juárez, who he says has been able to perfectly capture the essence of a building that has to bring together the services of the water company, with the university teaching activity. the building is modern, functional and sustainable, using natural resources and will generate its own electricity and have in build water saving devices. it is expected that the new building will be in operation at the beginning of the next school year 2023/24.

National Police warn of holiday rental scams the national Police teamed up with Airbnb and internet awareness group Confianza onine to warn of holiday rental scams and how to avoid them. According to figure, the post pandemic recovery of holiday rentals accelerated considerably in the first quarter of 2022, even exceeding 2019 levels when the pandemic had not yet begun. Being prepared too book well in advance when booking is an advantage when it comes to being able to take advantage of the most popular holiday rentals at competitive prices. however, police say that leaving everything to the last minute can cause problems due to the rush and the fear of not finding a decent holiday rental. this can especially affect those who are not used to reserving a holiday rental online or those who do not know how the platform works, since they may be affected by potential scams. in order for holidaymakers to be able to book with peace of mind and find a trustworthy host this summer, the national Police, Airbnb and Confianza online have come together to offer advice so that those making the bookings can be alert avoid fraud. some of the signs and tips

to avoid scams when booking summer holiday rentals are: Beware of messages with suspicious links. the national Police and Airbnb said, “don’t click on links in emails you don’t trust. they may contain links to fake web pages that mimic Airbnb’s design in an attempt to steal personal information or infect devices with a virus. if you suspect you have been tricked into visiting a fraudulent

or imposter site, return to the home page by typing https:// www.airbnb.es in your browser and continue browsing from there.” Police also added, “Be wary of offers that are too good to be true. Beware of offers that combine excessively low prices with very attractive images of accommodation. if an owner wants to make

too many changes during the booking process (asks you to pay in a different manner than expected, sends you contact addresses that don’t match the holiday rental listing, offers you a different listing that wasn’t on the page, etc.) there could be something amiss. You can also check that the host’s identity and other account details have been verified or confirmed.” Airbnb says that “Communication and payment should be always through the platform. if they ask you to make a deposit or a bank transfer, if they give you a PdF or paper invoice or offer you a discount for paying outside the platform, be wary. if they suggest payment methods outside the platform, it is most likely that they intend to carry out some type of fraud. therefore, you must always make payments and communicate through the Airbnb website or app. As long as you communicate, book and pay through Airbnb you will have the security guaranteed by the multiple protection system. if the host never asks you to speak through other means or sends you emails, that’s a good sign. You can also help other travellers by reporting suspicious messages.”

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP We ventured into the latest Boe meeting this week with some serious doubts as to the eventual outcome. on the one hand, the surging inflation in the uK – which is amongst the highest of the economies that we track, would argue for a bold move from the Boe. however, recent growth figures, amongst other weaker data suggest that the uK economy is already showing signs of contraction. there appears to be a recession in the uK in all but name, and hiking rates into a weakening economy never ended particularly well. in the end, the Boe erred on the side of caution, opting to raise uK rates by just 25bps (to 1.25%), but reminding everyone that they are prepared to ‘act forcefully’ on inflation if needs be. Quite what inflation has to get to in order for these acts of forcefulness to be triggered is up for debate, but that hawkish tilt in their statement, at least gave a modicum of comfort to those who had been seeking a bolder hike on the day. All said and done, we think that the Boe got it right. the pound initially took the news poorly, but that was as much to do with frustration from the 50bps camp. however, GBP/usd found its mojo again and rallied back over 1.2320 through the day, as a short-covering rally ensued. GBP/euR followed suit and moved back over 1.1700. Looking into next week, and the latest CPi inflation print will give markets some idea as to whether the Boe were correct in their thinking, or not. however, the latest estimates do not bode well, predicting a headline jump from 9% to 9.8% (YoY/May), creeping ever-closer to that rather unwelcome 10% level. stiff upper lip time.

EURO Just a week since the latest eCB meeting, after which they said that they would be hiking rates by 0.25% in July, and an emergency meeting is called by the eCB. emergency meeting, what is that all about? Markets were awash with multiple outcomes, from rate hikes to extensive programmes that might help take the pressure off the bonds of the more indebted nations. in the end, the announcement was a complete damp squib. the eCB have agreed to work on a ‘new anti-fragmentation instrument’. Whatever that is. how do you explain market frustration? Well, imagine it is Christmas day, and you get to the big present right at the end. You know, the one with the bow on, and fancy paper. excitedly, you unwrap the gift and inside is that gleaming iPad box you have wanted all year. except, when you open the box, it is not an iPad inside, but some chocolates. on Wednesday, the market got chocolates from the eCB. Given that markets had given the central bank community a green card to hike at their will this week, the eCB really did miss a window of opportunity. the single currency got caught up in the crossfires, with euR/usd initially rallying strongly on the rumour express, moving back to just over 1.0500. however, the markets instant frustration was taken out on the single currency, swiftly moving back under 1.0400, and was perhaps only saved on the day by the outcome from the Fed meeting. Looking ahead, today’s hiCP inflation will be closely monitored, with the pick of the bunch next week being the euro area PMi readings next thursday.

Vega Baja murder case to be retried A murder case in which the defendant was sentenced to 25 years in prison for beating an acquaintance to death is to be retried, it was announced this week. the supreme Court has indicated that the trial is to be repeated due to errors in procedure while reaching a verdict. the Civil and Criminal Chamber of the superior Court of Justice (tsJ) has annulled the verdict of a jury trial for the crime which took place in Granja de Rocamora, considering that there were ‘deficiencies in the motivation of the court’. the decision forces officials hold the trial again, with a new jury and another magistrate. in the previous hearing, presided over by Judge Joaquín María orellana, the Court imposed sentences totalling 25 and a half years in prison for the crimes of murder and robbery with violence for the beating death of a British citizen on november 16, 2019. the incident occurred when the 70-year-old victim welcomed the defendant into her home, a 52 year old dutch man she had known for many years. the defendant, according to the first trial, had for several years performed plumbing,

electricity and painting jobs for the victim at her home. the defendant was experiencing financial problems, and had asked the victim several times for loans which, until then had been repaid promptly. on the day in question, he had gone to ask for a new loan of 50 euro, something to which she agreed. however, when she opened her purse to extract the 50 euro

note, the defendant saw that the purse contained quite a lot of money. the accused admitted that that day, when he saw the victim’s purse full of notes, he lost his mind. the moment she turned her back on him, the defendant pushed her to snatch her purse. immediately afterwards, he grabbed her

roughly by the neck and threw her to the ground, where he began to administer numerous blows that ended her life. the man fled with 500 euro, leaving the body on the kitchen floor. the defendant was arrested by the Guardia Civil months after the crime, which focused its investigations on the victim’s environment, since everything indicated that the crime had been committed by someone close to her. the jury at the time of the trial ruled out the existence of extenuating circumstances for addiction to narcotic substances or for suffering from a mental illness. in the verdict, the court limited itself to saying that these extenuating circumstances had not been proven and it was the magistrate who, when he issued the sentence, explained the reasons why these extremes were not considered proven. in the opinion of the supreme Court, the judge should have returned the record to the jury at that time so that it could discuss these reasons, instead of trying to fill these gaps of information with his own opinion. For this reason, the supreme Court declared the original trial to be void and ruled that the process must now be repeated again.

80 people arrested in ‘Nigerian letter’ scam spain’s national Police, in a joint operation with the Customs surveillance of the tax Agency and euRoPoL have brought down an international scam, arresting 80 people and carrying out 53 simultaneous raids. it is estimated that the gang managed to defraud over a thousand victims worldwide using the nigerian letter method. in raids, officers seized cash amounting to 500,000 dollars and 30,000 euro. it is estimated that the gang mainly targeted elderly people residing in the us, but had victims from several countries including spain. the united states Postal inspection service, the north American department of homeland security, the Portuguese Judicial Police and the British national Crime Agency also collaborated in the operation. the investigation began at the end of 2019 when police detected parcels from the us with large amounts of money hidden inside magazines. shortly after, and as a result of the international collaboration of tax and police authorities from several countries, they discovered that they were dealing with

a criminal organization using what is commonly known as the nigerian letter scam. the main organisers of the scam were residing in spain. the fraudsters would print letters, en masse, either claiming that the recipient had won a lottery prize or was in receipt of an unclaimed family inheritance. the letters were printed in two ways, either with the full names

and surnames of the victims on the letter, or not addressed to anyone but the scammers would acquire individualized labels with personal data and address to place them on the envelopes. the scammers would then drive the letters to Portugal, carried in

huge suitcases and transported by car or on the bus. they would post the letters from Portugal as the cost was lower. Researchers calculated that the approximate cost of all the letters sent could amount to half a million euro. the victims, always elderly and retired, contacted the telephone number that appeared on the letters and engaged in a short questionnaire to see if they had won the prize. the ‘call centre’ would convince them they had struck it lucky and in order to claim the prize they had to pay an initial amount for fees and taxes, with the ‘winners’ having to pay between 1,000 and 30,000 euro. the organization used a complex system of concealment whereby victims were asked to pay the supposed fees by transfer to another person, also a victim. this third party was led to believe they were being lent money to complete some of their payment so they would borrow the rest and send the full payment to the organisation. the money was sent to spain, hidden in magazines or catalogues. once they had the money in their possession, the fraudsters sent it to their country of origin using a network of mules.

boy was living in Algemesi after several weeks of investigation. he was living in the home of distant relatives of his father, as the mother had reported. once contacted by authorities the couple agreed to hand the boy over and he is now in the care of Valencia social services while police continue to look into the

case. the couple gave statements to the police after their arrest and have been released on bail awaiting a court date. Both denied they had paid for the child and police said the boy had a close bond with them and was not distressed by the events.

20 year old arrested for faking kidnapping to impress boy A 20-year-old girl was arrested in Alicante for a crime of public disorder after having mobilized national Police service patrols to try to locate her because she had allegedly been kidnapped at knifepoint by several people. the kidnapping was invented by the detainee, who at the time was safely at home. in the end, she confessed to police that she only wanted to attract the attention of a 16-year-old boy that she likes. the young woman was provisionally released after spending tuesday at the disposal of the Alicante court. the events occurred in the early hours of Monday. A call was placed to the 112 emergency line. A young man reported that a friend of his had told him through instagram that she had been kidnapped in the Puerta de Alicante shopping centre by several young men who threatened her with knives and took her away in a car. the girl also told him that the alleged kidnappers were the same people that the young man had previously reported for a violent robbery and they specifically wanted to see him. From this initial call, national Police officers mobilized its patrols and initially sped to the Puerta de Alicante shopping centre, searching the mall and its surrounding areas

AA members’ stories every once in a while, the Costa Blanca People features a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcoholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. this week, we bring you another member’s personal journey told from their own perspective. What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. there are no dues or fees for AA membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

An AA Member’s Story... When i found my 41-year-old wife dead in bed early one december morning it was the horrific culmination of weeks and weeks of alcoholic drinking. For months leading up to her tragic death we had been drinking

to oblivion every day, both of us drunkenly incapable of working in our respective careers. We were using our savings to buy alcohol every day. We rarely left the house; other than to buy booze. on average, we would drink anything between six to eight bottles of wine a day. Why did we behave in such a destructive way when we had both enjoyed successful and lucrative careers? simple. We were alcoholics. Addicted to alcohol. incapable of going a day without drinking. At the time of my beautiful wife’s death, she had been drinking for only 13 years, having hardly touched booze before her late 20s. on her death certificate it said the cause of death was excess fat on her liver. it’s a polite medical term that means she drank herself to death. For my part, i had been guzzling the hard stuff for the best part of 20 years when she died. For a long time, i managed to get away with it. My profession was notorious for hard drinking. it was common for people to turn up for work smelling of drink, unsteady on their feet. But when my alcoholism took over every aspect of my life, i stopped turning up for work, i was drinkdriving most days, i had no regard for my responsibilities towards my family, friends and work colleagues. in other words, totally selfish and insensitive. i used alcohol to escape reality. Yet my life would have been the envy of many - fantastic wife, lovely house, good job with a handsome salary. every luxury within our grasp. And what did we want? to drink ourselves to oblivion

17

every day. the consequences were fatal for my wife and disastrous for me. i don’t complain because they resulted from my own behaviour. And my downfall, leading to the sack at work, charged with drink-driving, spending a night in a police cell, i stumbled into Alcoholics Anonymous 13 years ago. People at the AA meetings - from teens to octogenarians - said they had been just like me, which was hard to believe at first as they were fresh-faced and happy. i was told that if i didn’t believe what i heard then i should believe what i saw. And what i saw were men

without finding any trace of the “kidnapped” young woman. While the operation was underway, the girl continued to send messages to her friend and asked him to come to the nh hotel, where her captors had apparently demanded to see him. the Police were aware of the communications and sent a patrol to the home of the minor who was receiving the messages. the young man accompanied police to try to locate the address of the alleged victim. Meanwhile, the young woman continued to send him messages and painted a picture of an increasingly dramatic situation. she assured that after being kidnapped she had woken up in a house in the José Antonio neighbourhood and that she feared for her life. she was afraid because she thought she could die, she claimed through instagram

and women - 50/50 in most cases enjoying life to the full. Without drink. so how does it work. the golden rule is stay away from the first drink. Keep sober company. Go plenty of meetings. Learn how to stay sober. there is a 12step programme, which in essence is a guide to decent living. i stopped drinking in January 2006. today i have a terrific life, and i have problems, just like everyone else in this world. But i don’t need to drink anymore to make the problems go away (for a few hours at least). the way of life offered by living the AA programme. is beyond words.

messages. After the last messages, Police sent all units to the José Antonio neighbourhood with the lights of their vehicles on so that the girl would signal them from the window of the house where she said she was being held, although she already warned them that she couldn’t in case she woke up the kidnappers. At the same time, another crew had located the home of the kidnapped young woman. When the victim’s friend told her that the police were there, she replied that she had just been released. officers went upstairs to speak to the victim, and although initially the girl said that she did not know anything about what happened, she ended up confessing after her arrest, saying that she had done it because she likes a young man and she wanted to get his attention.

Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in 1935. today it is bigger than ever, saving lives bringing peace to the spouses and partners of the families. two closing thoughts: if AA did not work it would now be long defunct. And if you have problem with your drinking, why not give AA a try. if it doesn’t work for you, feel free to pick up your misery on the way out the door. to find out more about Alcoholics Anonymous, call our helpline 0034 625 912 078 or go to our website www.aacostablancasouth.com

Ryanair cabin crew in Spain to strike Cabin crew working for Ryanair in spain have voted to hold six days of strikes at the end of June and early July, potentially adding to the disruption affecting air travel across europe. the spanish-based staff in the uso and sitCPLA unions will walk out for two three-day strikes from 24th June to 26th June and then again from 30th June to 2nd July. Ryanair said it did not expect widespread disruption and claimed most crew would not support the planned action. so far the airline, europe’s biggest by passenger numbers, has escaped much of the turmoil affecting its rivals, particularly easyJet in the uK, and said it has not cancelled any flights because of its own staffing issues. however, the spanish unions now appear to be fixed on action, largely to pursue large increases to basic salaries after cuts during the coronavirus pandemic. the general secretary of uso’s Ryanair section, Lidia Arasanz, said: “We have to resume mobilisation so that the reality of our situation is known and Ryanair is forced to abide by basic labour laws.” the unions, speaking in Madrid, said they would look to coordinate action with other unions representing Ryanair staff in Belgium, France, italy and Portugal. however, Ryanair played down the prospect of any threat to its summer flying, with the

airline expecting to operate more flights in its peak-season schedule than it did in 2019. A spokesperson said: “Ryanair has negotiated c o l l e c t i v e agreements covering 90 percent of our people across europe. in recent months we have been negotiating improvements to those agreements as we work through the Covid recovery phase. those negotiations are going well and we do not expect widespread disruption this summer.” despite its assurances, Ryanair has been forced to cancel hundreds of flights through industrial action by its staff, with the two years before the pandemic marked by disruptive walkouts, including uK pilot strikes in 2019 that followed crew walkouts across europe in 2018. the airline operates out of more than 20 airports, including nine bases, in spain, with more than 70 domestic routes as well as the large international tourist trade. Ryanair said that it had reached an agreement with CCoo, which it described as “spain’s largest and most representative union”, and was “delivering improvements for spanish-

based cabin crew and reinforcing Ryanair’s commitment to their welfare”. it said that announcements of strike action “by the much smaller uso and sitCPLA unions are a distraction from their own failures to deliver agreements after three years of negotiations, and we believe that their strike calls will not be supported by our spanish crews”. the news could nonetheless fuel more anxiety for passengers, who have seen rivals such as British Airways and easyJet forced to cancel thousands of summer flights because of problems, mainly driven by labour shortages across the aviation industry. Long airport queues and groundhandling and air traffic problems have contributed to delays and cancellations. demand for flying has bounced back rapidly after the pandemic but businesses have been unable to quickly rehire staff, after thousands were laid off.

Spanish airline to fly UK-made helium airships spain’s Air nostrum has become the first airline to reserve 100-seat helium airships that emit just one tenth of harmful emissions produced by jet planes, their British manufacturer announced. A spokesperson for hybrid Air Vehicles told news agency AFP that Air nostrum signed a deal to lease 10 Airlanders scheduled for delivery from 2026 onwards in a transaction worth around 600 million euros. the spanish regional carrier aims to become hAV’s launch customer while also diversifying its domestic fleet, using the Airlander on domestic routes. the uK group will create 1,800 jobs at its facility in south Yorkshire, northern england, when it starts production later this year. the hybrid ship — which looks like two blimps stuck together — has a helium-filled hull and will be propelled by a hybrid of electric and fuel-burning engines, with the goal of going allelectric by 2030. it can stay in the air for five days and travel at maximum speeds of 130 kilometres (80 miles) per hour, with a range of more than 7,000 kilometres. “Airlander is designed to deliver a better future for sustainable aviation services, enable new transport

networks and provide rapid growth options for our customers,” said hAV chief executive tom Grundy in a statement. “our partnership with Air nostrum Group, as the launch Airline for Airlander 10, leads the way towards that future.” the airline said in a separate statement that the planned aircraft, which has not yet been certified by regulators, will use far less fuel than regular jets. “We are exploring each and every possible way to reduce our carbon footprint,” added Air nostrum boss Carlos Bertomeu. “the Airlander 10 will drastically reduce emissions and for that reason we have made this agreement with hAV.” the first prototype, developed with us aerospace giant northrop Grumman, took flight in 2012 as part of a project with Pentagon, which was cancelled due to technical and budgetary issues. hAV transferred the 92-metre-long vehicle to Britain in 2013 to turn it into a civilian model, bigger than an A380 jumbo jet. it was presented to the public for the first time in 2016, but it nosedived while landing on its second test flight, without causing any injuries.

Seven-year-old boy drowns False podiatrist fined in Torrevieja in Alicante pool tragedy the Criminal Court no. 2 of orihuela, based in torrevieja, has sentenced a Belgian woman who worked as a podiatrist without having the necessary qualifications. the woman, identified in court papers as A.h. advertised herself on social networks as a podiatrist and specialist in diabetic foot care, offering a series of treatments including verruca removal despite not having professional certification. on top of that, her office located in torrevieja lacked the health authorization for Podiatry activity that is required for this type of practice. the sentence, which is final, decreed that the woman must pay a fine of 1,095 euro and has been ordered to cease practicing. the official College of Podiatrists of the Valencian C o m m u n i t y (iCoPCV) filed a case against A.h. advertising her services despite her lack of qualifications in podiatry. this is the second such conviction in the Valencian Community so far in 2022. the iCoPCV advised that the easiest way to “know that you are in the hands of a qualified professional is to check that he or she has a college number.” Maite García, vice president of the official College of Podiatrists of the

Valencian Community said, “When we from the College of Podiatrists saw the adverts, we contacted A.h. to warn her that she was risking a fine for professional impersonation if she did not have a Podiatry degree. she told us that she did not do Podiatry and removed the ad. unfortunately, this practice is very common both in beauticians who try to exceed their functions and in foreigners who do not know the qualifications that are required in our country to practice certain professions, as is the case in our branch of healthcare.” the complaint was filed by the iCoPCV, which has been actively working for a number of years to eradicate this problem that they say affects the profession and endangers the health of the population. this is the second conviction for ‘impersonation’ in Podiatry in the Valencian Community in 2022. the first relates to the owner of a shoe repair centre in Valencia who announced that he was diagnosing foot problems and offering personalized insoles without having a university degree in Podiatry. the College highlighted the importance of the Ministry of health’s collaboration in pursuing these fraudulent practitioners.

A child was tragically drowned in an Alicante swimming pool after his hand became trapped underwater. two local police officers along with other residents of the complex tried in vain to save the boy after his hand became caught in one of the bottom drains of the pool, the protective cover of which had become loose. eventually, officers managed to cut the power supply to the pool to stop to suction power of the drain but by that stage it was too late. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the boy but nothing could be done to save him. national Police have opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the drowning and have collected statements from residents of the urbanization who suggested that it is “negligence” on the part of the maintenance company, since the grille covering the drain was “deteriorated”. For its part, from the maintenance company they have protested that it is not a question of their negligence because it is not within their functions to review these safety elements. they added that the lifeguard on duty is obliged to check the steps and other elements before the pool opens and they have been told that both the concierge of the urbanization and the lifeguard saw first thing in the morning that the drain cover was apparently fine. the tragic accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. in an urbanization on Calle oceano, in the Residencia Bulevar

Cantalar. there were three children swimming in the pool and the lifeguard was not there at that time because at 2:30 p.m. she began her break. one of the children got his hand trapped in a drain and as the pump was running, he was not able to remove his arm due to the suction. the alarm was immediately raised and the first two local police officers who arrived at the urbanization, as well as neighbours, jumped into the pool to try to get the child out. A resident of the urbanization, who is a doctor, also jumped into the pool and in the end the officers were only able free the little boy’s hand when the power was turned off.

At the scene of the accident, in addition to the first two officers who have jumped into the water, there were three other Local Police patrols and two Fire department crews with a defibrillator and equipment to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as well as two ambulances and members of the national Police. national police began investigating the circumstances immediately after the little boy’s death was confirmed. A short distance from the drain where his hand became stuck was a loose protection grille. these grilles are normally screwed on, so the reason why this one was loose will now be investigated.

The Rolling Stones ink deal for TV series about their rise to fame The makers of The Crown have reached a lucrative deal with FX network for a 16-part drama series based on the rags-to-riches story of legendary rock and rollers the Rolling Stones. The series is also set to use the band’s music to help with storytelling. Even though casting details have not been confirmed, it’s believed the show will air for two seasons on the network. The Sticky Fingers rockers are for the first time allowing their music to be used for a drama. FX boss John Landgraf said that they are in advanced talks for the project, which will be written by High Fidelity author Nick Hornby, and is set for a two season order. The high-end series will focus on the band’s glory years between its

formation through to 1972, which includes a fantastic run of hit albums such as Their Satanic Majesties Request, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. Reportedly, the band’s main songwriters Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will receive the bulk of cash made from the over $61 million deal. Jagger and Richards are the wealthiest members of the iconic rock band with both men holding a fortune of $200 million each. Among the portrayal of scenes expected in the series include the 1969 firing of original multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, who drowned in a swimming pool weeks after getting sacked. There are also suggestions of a focus on Richard’s battle with drug addiction.

Airlines told to cancel EU warns Algeria over row flights to stop travel chaos with Spain UK airlines have been told to cancel flights they can’t deliver this summer to stop a rerun of May’s travel chaos, which will have huge impact on Spanish tourism. The government and the aviation regulator wrote to carriers telling them to ensure their summer timetables were “deliverable”. They added that earlier cancellations were “better” than axing flights at the last minute. It comes after tens of thousands of passengers have been affected by cancellations and delays at airports. The problem was particularly bad during Easter and last month’s half-term school holiday, and British Airways, TUI and Easyjet have apologised. Staff shortages have been blamed, after thousands of airline jobs were cut during the pandemic and have yet to be replaced despite a spike in postpandemic travel demand. In their joint letter, the Department for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority set out five “specific expectations” for the sector. They wrote: “We think it’s important that each airline reviews afresh its plans for the remainder of the summer season until the end of September to develop a schedule that is deliverable. “Your schedules must

be based on the resources you and your contractors expect to have available, and should be resilient for the unplanned and inevitable operational challenges that you will face. “While cancellations at any time are a regrettable inconvenience to passengers, it is our view that cancellations at the earliest possibility to deliver a more robust schedule are better for consumers than late notice onthe-day cancellations.” The letter stated that airlines must “keep consumers informed” about their rights during disruption, such as having “sufficiently staffed call centres and user-friendly digital channels”. It also urged airlines, ground handlers, air traffic control and the Border Force work more closely to try to prevent problems. Airlines and unions told MPs on the Commons Business Committee that the staffing shortages blighting the industry were likely to persist this summer. Oliver Richardson, national officer for civil air transport at the Unite union, told MPs it was unlikely the situation would be fixed “unless we work together”.

Representatives from BA, Easyjet and ground handling firm Swissport said they also faced long delays to get security clearance for new staff. Swissport’s UK boss, Jude Winstanley, said it had hired 3,000 people since the start of the year, but it was taking up to 90 days to get them a full airside pass due to the referencing process. According to the CAA, up to 4 percent of UK flights were cancelled during half term and the Platinum Jubilee weekend - up from the usual rate of 1 percent. Boss Richard Moriarty called the situation distressing and unacceptable, adding that the industry needed to get a grip - although he said it was “not solely a UK specific issue”. There have been calls for EU aviation workers to be added to the government’s shortage occupation list, but aviation minister Robert Courts denied this would help.

The European Union has warned Algeria against any “discriminatory treatment” of Spain after it suspended a cooperation pact in a row over disputed Western Sahara. Algeria’s diplomatic mission to the EU reacted with anger, insisting that the move would have no effect on its association agreement with the EU as a whole, and denied that financial transactions would be halted. “The decision taken by Algeria to suspend the treaty of friendship and good neighbourly relations signed with Spain in 2002 is of utmost concern,” the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement. “We are assessing the implications of the Algerian actions, including the instruction given to the financial institutions to stop transactions between the two countries.” Borrell warned that the move “would lead to a discriminatory treatment of an EU member state” and said Brussels was reaching out to Algeria to clarify the situation. “We trust that, in the name of our strong and long-term partnership, a swift solution will be found to fully re-establish commercial and investment relations,” the statement said. “The EU is ready to stand up against any type of coercive

measures applied against an EU member state. However, the EU continues to favour dialogue first to solve controversies.” Algeria’s diplomatic mission said in a statement that “the alleged measure by the government to stop ongoing transactions with a European partner… only exists in the minds of those who claim it and of those who hastened to stigmatise it. “Furthermore, and with regard to gas deliveries to Spain, Algeria has already made known by the most authoritative voice that of the President of the Republic, that it will continue to honour all of its commitments made in this context.” Algeria suspended its 2002 friendship treaty with Spain and its banking association then urged members to restrict business ties. The decisions

came after Madrid in March reversed its decades-long stance of neutrality on the Western Sahara conflict, saying it would back Morocco’s autonomy plan for the disputed region as it sought to end a lingering diplomatic spat. Spain’s move, widely seen as a victory for Morocco, infuriated its regional rival Algeria, which has long backed the Polisario Front, Western Sahara’s independence movement, and which also supplies vast quantities of natural gas to Spain. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares vowed that Spain would “defends its interests”. “It is obvious that the EU has the tools and instruments to deal with any situation,” he said. But he insisted that Madrid and Brussels “want dialogue and we are not going to do anything that can be used for escalation”.

Paul Cunningham Nurses charity celebrates 13 years Paul Cunningham Nurses charity was founded in 2008 by Jennifer Cunningham who named the Charity after her son Paul, who died of cancer. Jennifer cared for her son for several months and was shocked to learn that there was no hospice care nursing available in Spain. She promised Paul to do something worthwhile in his memory and she would name it after him, hence why the charity is called Paul Cunningham nurses. In 2008 the charity was formed to fill this gap by supplying equipment and fully qualified nurses (not carers) and provide professional palliative care in the later stages of the patient’s life. “This is a totally free service,” said a spokesperson for the charity, “Since then Paul Cunningham Nurses charity has helped many patients to die peacefully in their own home in the Costa Blanca South area. We have opened three Charity shops and rely solely on the shops and donations to fund our valuable care.” “On Wednesday 22nd June our shop at Quesada will celebrate being open for 13 years and we would like to invite everyone to join us. We will have gifts, drinks and some nibbles, so please come along and help us celebrate our amazing charity and the help we provide here in Spain.”

Motorway dog resuce Garbage, Sadly, abandoned dogs are a frequent issue here on the Costa Blanca and there are countless charities working against the odds to re home strays and abandoned pets. This week, the Twitter account @SocialDrive_es published a video of a driver stopping along the hard shoulder of the AP7 motorway in Alicante in an attempt to save to panicking abandoned dogs from being run over – and potentially causing an accident. In the video it can be seen that both the cameraman and another man, who is trying to attract the attention of the dogs, have parked the vehicle on the hard shoulder and, although likely the pair had the best of intentions, it must be taken into account that stopping on the motorway without mandatory signalling result in causing a much worse accident. Their actions have sparked a debate online about what should be done in this situation with some people applauding their actions and others criticising them for stopping on a busy motorway. So, what should they have done? What to do if you find an abandoned dog The normal thing most people think to do if they find an abandoned dog on a public road is to try to get to the dog as quickly as possible in order to restrain it, however this can be dangerous for you and for the animal in case it panics (as can happen near roads with noisy, fast moving traffic). In this situation, it is always best to notify

garbage everywhere!

the emergency services, who have the necessary training and equipment to rescue the dog with minimum risk. In the event that you cannot catch the dog (or dogs) safely to restrain them until help arrives, wait for police to get there so that you can give them all the information on how, when and where you last saw the animals (in the case having lost sight of them). The most important thing in these cases, say police, is to act while always thinking about the safety of everyone (drivers and animals) and leave the rescue of dogs in complicated situations (such as on a motorway, as is the case) in the hands of professionals.

Spanish space station Spanish brands listed in Spain is joining the space race, with its own space station and Space Council being set up within its government in the next few months. President Pedro Sánchez, speaking at INTA-NASA Training and Visitor Centre in Robledo de Chavela (Madrid region), said the ‘Spanish Space Station’ would be in full operation ‘by the beginning of 2023’. An ‘inter-ministerial’ group, focusing on speeding up works needed to get the space station in operation, known as a ‘Space Council’, would be created shortly, he revealed. He said the Spanish Space Station ‘would not be in Madrid’, which annoyed the regional government – run by the right-wing PP party, historically in opposition to the socialists (PSOE) of which Pedro Sánchez is leader – but the decision makes sense, since the country’s biggest corporations and headquarters remain very centralised in Madrid and Barcelona, concentrating the greatest meaningful job opportunities in the two largest cities rather than spreading them out around the country. Investment in the aeronautical and aerospace industries will

‘help safeguard the wellbeing of current and future generations’, the Prime Minister stressed. He says the ‘space race’ is crucial and strategic for ‘all the largest countries on earth’, since it is central to everything from telecommunications and transport through to security, defence, and even agriculture, curbing climate change and tackling natural disasters, like

floods and forest fires. Science Minister Diana Morant had already spoken about the country’s key role in the space industry and its focus on decentralisation back in January. Diana, 43, is originally from Gandia, a telecommunications engineering graduate and formerly mayoress of the town from May 2015, so she is very aware of the need to diffuse major job opportunities.

“We need to understand that Spain doesn’t start and finish in Madrid, and that science is very distributed in our country,” she said at the time. The space industry is, clearly, not just about sending up space ships to look for life on other planets or stick flags on the moon, and it is not merely the prerogative of countries with huge land-mass, global power, or both. Whilst usually associated with the USA and Russia, other, much smaller countries have played major parts in space activity – Spain included. In addition to the observatories in the Canary Islands, where Queen musician Brian May spent years researching his PhD in astrophysics in the 1970s, Spain’s role in the moon landings were so vital that, without its acrossthe-board efforts and frantic crisis-resolving, Neil Armstrong may never have been able to pronounce his historical ‘one small step for man’ catchphrase. And Diana Morant’s predecessor as science minister, Pedro Duque, was Spain’s first man on the moon and second man in space after Miguel López-Alegría, having taken part in missions in 1998 and 2003.

Europe’s Top 500 Europe top 500 most valuable brands in terms of overall financial worth include 24 from Spain, with seven of them in the first 100, putting it in seventh place on the continent as a whole, not just in the EU-27. Two Spanish corporations appear in the top 10 in Europe for greatest increase in their net worth in the past year. The annual ranking for 2022 has just been published and, once again, features German motor brand Mercedes-Benz as the largest on the continent, valued at just under €52.4 billion. Despite only moderate growth in the past 12 months – just 6 percent against a backdrop of a generally difficult year for the motor industry, Mercedes-Benz has managed to hold onto its top position through a concerted effort to focus on electrically-powered cars, sales of which soared by 90% for the luxury family saloon brand over the second half of 2021 and first half of 2022. The two highest-ranking national brands from Spain both have a female leader – Banco

Santander, whose chairwoman is Ana Botín, and Zara, the most international of the fashion empire Inditex’s clothing labels. Founder Amancio Ortega’s daughter, Marta Ortega, took over as CEO of Inditex last year and, although habitually one of the country’s biggest corporations in terms of financial worth and turnover at

any one time in recent history, this has reportedly increased with Marta at the helm. She has always been a key player in the family firm, starting as shelf-stacker and check-out worker in Bershka in London after she graduated, working the shop floor in stores around the world, later becoming one

of the design team for Zara and, more recently, its product manager, back in her native Galicia. Although sales at Inditex increased by 36 percent in the first quarter of Marta’s reign, Zara has fallen from number 28 to number 32 in Europe, but this is largely due to other brands rising in value as opposed to Zara’s losing any. The opposite, in fact, is true – the first three months of the year closed with earnings of around €760m for Inditex, far exceeding analysts’ expectations. Banco Santander, which has long been present in Latin America and broke into the UK market in 2004 when it acquired the Abbey National bank, increased its value by 9 percent in the last 12 months and has risen from Europe’s number 26 to number 23. At the time of publication, shares in Banco Santander were worth €2.62, up 0.48 percent, and Inditex as a firm – which currently features nine major brands – was at €22.51, down 0.27 percent.

The tradition of tapas The tapa is one of Spain’s most emblematic culinary treats. A savoury, bite-sized appetiser served in taverns and bars across the country, tapas can be hot or cold, and made of all sorts of delicious ingredients. Enjoying tapas is one of the country’s great gastronomic traditions. But where did the tapa originate, and what’s the history behind this iconic Spanish snacking tradition? Tapas have been enjoyed for centuries. While different regions of Spain all individually claim to be the birthplace of the iconic Spanish tradition, the appearance of the appetiser and its ingredients are irrevocably linked with the country’s rich, diverse, and sometimes turbulent history. The Roman invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in 212 BCE saw the cultivation of olives and the planting of vines. In 711 CE, North African Muslims, or Moors, captured the Iberian Peninsula and called their territory al-Andalus. They brought with them almonds, citrus fruits, and all sorts of wonderful spices. Journeys to the ‘New World’ resulted in the conquistadors introducing to Spain a wealth of exotic foodstuffs, including tomatoes, sweet and chili peppers, maize (corn), and potatoes—all staples of the Spanish kitchen. The exact historical and cultural details of the true origin of tapas are unclear. Some historians suggest that tapas originated in Andalusia, but what is certain is that this iconic appetiser

evolved over hundreds of years across the Iberian Peninsula.

Origins An early theory as to the origins of the tapas tradition is associated with King Alfonso X of Castile. According to legend the Spanish monarch was recovering from an illness and had been advised by his physicians to nibble on bite-sized snacks between meals to reinforce his weakened constitution. A drop of wine was also recommended. This “eat light and often” method of consumption appeared to work, and proved highly appealing to the king’s palate. Shortly after recovering, Alfonso decreed that no alcohol was to be served in the taverns and inns of Spain unless accompanied by something to eat. The king’s proclamation proved popular, and made sense. No longer were patrons imbibing on an empty stomach and getting blind drunk quickly. Instead, getting inebriated evolved into a measured, almost civilised procedure. In an effort to curb the drunkenness of soldiers and sailors, another Spanish king, Felipe III, refined the law by insisting that wine be served in a goblet with a lid or cover, on which small portions of food were served and included in the price of the drink. And this is where the name tapas derives from: tapa translates more or less as “top” or “cover.” Another version surrounding the origin of the tapa is rooted in the fields

and workshops of the Middle Ages. Toiling in the midday summer heat, labourers and farmhands would be served a light meal rather than a rich, heavy dish, which was deferred until the evening. Lunch was accompanied by wine, the alcohol serving to loosen aching limbs and refuel motivation. Tapas’ traditional relationship with Andalusia is reinforced by further royal lore. It’s said that King Alfonso XIII and his entourage stopped by a local tavern in Cádiz, where he ordered a cup of wine. In the south of Spain, the drink taken was gazpacho, since wine increased body heat rather than providing workers with the necessary cold refreshment. Gazpacho is a cold soup made of raw, blended vegetables. The ancient port city of Cádiz is regularly fanned by strong winds whipped off the Bay of Cádiz. On the day the Spanish monarch rode into town, the breeze was kicking up a treat and blowing sand into the inn. The bartender, realising the king’s tipple was about to be sand blasted, placed a slice of ham over the top of the cup to protect the wine. Alfonso’s drink was spared, and when the king ordered a second cup, he did so with the “tapa.”

Modern Tapas While the primary meaning of tapa is cover or lid, it has in Spain also become a recognised term for the tastiest snacks in the Iberian Peninsula. Tapas are served everywhere, sometimes as a complimentary nibble. Certain bars

in Castille-La Mancha, home to that devious 16th-century tavern owner, usually offer up a complimentary tapa with a beer or a glass of wine. And in Galicia, Castile and León, Asturias, and Extremadura, you may also be offered a free tapa when ordering a drink. In some Spanish cities, entire neighbourhoods are dedicated to tapas bars. In Barcelona, for example, head for the city’s Passeig de Sant Joan

and seek out Madrid’s La Latina district for some of the most authentic tapas in the Spanish capital. Leon is the city with the most bars per inhabitant in all of Spain and many places serve tapas for free to accompany drinks. In northern Spain, tapas are also called pinchos (pintxos in Basque) for the pincho or toothpick speared through them to keep the ingredients from falling off the slice of bread.

Popular Spanish resort bans football shirts in crackdown on ‘drunken tourism’ One of Spain’s most popular holiday destinations is attempting to crack down on ‘drunken tourism’ by imposing a dress code in one of its party districts. Officials in Mallorca are banning people wearing football shirts from entering restaurants. Despite the holiday season having only just started, Playa de Palma business owners have already had enough of the bad behaviour of drunk holidaymakers. Business owners from the area have come together to create a dress code that visitors will have to follow or be refused entry to certain bars and restaurants. The list of banned clothing includes swimsuits, football kits, tank tops without straps and any novelty accessories purchased from street vendors such as umbrella hats. Those in football shirts can’t simply remove their tops to gain access as shirtless people will also be refused service. Eleven restaurants in Playa de Palma, Spain are so far enforcing the ban, with QR codes at their entrances for people to check the rules as to what they can or can’t wear. Additionally, if a tourist is wearing any clothes

showing the logo of a business which “promotes drunken tourism”, they too will be banned. While there will be some flexibility during the day, they say that there will be no tolerance at night when the bad behaviour is said to be at its worst. Since 2020, the Balearic Islands have been cracking

down on drunk tourist with a number of measures to try and encourage more valuable, less troublesome, visitors. This so-called ‘excess decree’ applies to resorts in Magaluf, Playa de Palma and San Antonio in Ibiza. These popular party holiday destinations have banned all-you-can-drink deals, bar crawls and happy hours among other measures to try to limit excessive alcohol consumption. Balaeric Islands President Francina Armengol said that excess tourism is “not welcome”

in the region. “It is neither the kind of tourism we want nor what residents deserve,” she said earlier this year before the summer season began. But business owners in Playa de Palma don’t believe that the Balearics’ efforts to limit drunken tourists are working. Pedro Marín and Juan Miguel Ferrer, manager and chief executive of Playa de Palma, told local media that since 10 May, there have been large groups of tourists just looking to get drunk. They don’t book much in advance, stay just a few nights and generally spend around €40 a day, “generally on alcohol and cans of beer that they consume, drinking on the street.” The availability of alcohol in all-inclusive hotels may have been controlled, but the problem is out on the streets. When the tourists arrive back at their hotel in the early hours of the morning, they are so drunk they can’t walk, the business owners say. Often they are left lying alone on the pavement. “The availability of alcohol in all-inclusive hotels may have been controlled, but the problem is out on the streets,” they said.

Protect eyes as early as three years old Specsavers launches the Suneez sunglasses range for children THE sun’s UV rays can cause serious damage to our eyes, and if exposed to it for prolonged periods of time, the damage can often be irreversible. Long-term exposure to harmful UV rays from the sun can increase the risk of developing cataracts, agerelated macular degeneration and a common type of skin cancer called cell carcinoma in anyone, regardless of your health. For children, their eyes let in more light than adults, due to their large pupils and clear lenses , which means that a significant proportion of our eyes’ lifetime exposure to UV occurs when we are young. In the summer with warm weather and beaming sun we need to take special care, but even on a cloudy day sun can cause harm to eyes, especially children. Sun cream is important for protecting our skin, and ensuring you apply it to your eyelids will give some protection, however it’s vital our eyes are protected w i t h sunglasses in order to

avoid direct UV damage and to maintain good eye health. UV damage can come in many different forms, for both adults and children, and whether long term or short team, can compromise good eye health. There are several conditions caused by UV exposure: • Photokeratitis: Also known as sunburn of the eyes or ‘snow blindness’, which can cause vision loss for up to 48 hours • Cataracts (most often found in adults): Progressive clouding of the eye lens (the part of the eye that focuses on light) which can cause slow vision loss • Age-related macular degeneration: UV rays can damage the retina of the eye, which can lead to agerelated blindness in addition to increasing your risk of macular degeneration, which is the progressive loss of total vision • Skin cancer: Of the eyelids and eyeballs When purchasing sunglasses, it’s crucial that they have adequate UV protection, as some fashion glasses don’t offer this. Wearing UV blocking g l a s s e s regularlycan h e l p s prevent long term

damage. Suneez, a range of nonprescription sunglasses for children aged 3-12 have just been launched atSpecsavers Ópticas. Beat the heat with these cooling foods We can’t control the weather, but we can control what we put into our bodies. To stay cool as the mercury climbs, it’s important to drink plenty of water, eat ‘little and often’ and avoid excessive amounts of alcohol, which is dehydrating. There are certain foods that are more cooling than others, including: Avocado: Avocado is laden with

high amount of mono-saturated fatty acids which help to remove heat and toxins from the blood. They are also easily digested, so your body will not need to create more heat to digest it. Banana: Apart from its other benefits like providing instant energy, bananas make a great cooling snack. It causes your tissues to shrink, allowing for absorption of more water, which cools

your core. Cucumber: The age old benefits of cucumber are known to all. Not only does this diuretic vegetable do wonders for your skin, it also helps to flush out toxins and aids in digestion. Watermelon: Watermelon is 90% water so it helps to fulfil your body’s water requirements. This summer fruit

is also loaded with antioxidants giving a long lasting cooling effect. Melons are also equally effective to cool your body and help you stay hydrated. Coconuts: This all-in-one fruit gives you water, fruit and oil. Coconut water is filled with electrolytes which helps to keep you hydrated and cool.

I had not heard from my friend, and it occurred to me that she hadn’t sent me a birthday card. My friend has had cancer for three years. I left it 12 weeks then I phoned the house and got her daughter. She curtly informed me that her mother had died four months ago. I was very shocked that they had not informed me. She told me that her mother had blocked my number, weeks before when she herself had decided I had not been a good enough friend to her. They did not tell me she had died, nor did they tell me when the funeral was. I read back the old messages I had sent

CostaBlancaPeople 21st - 27th June 2022

to my friend, and her last message did seem less friendly and a bit ‘final’. I rang back again and got her husband who told me that she did in fact think I could have been a better friend to her, particularly as she had been a good friend to me when my husband died. I went through the last WhatsApp message exchange, and in hindsight I may possibly have been full of my house move, when she asked to see me and I’d said I was too busy. I sent a card and wrote in it, saying I was sorry that I did not pick up on the severity of things, and got a note back saying ‘too little; too late’ from her daughter. Should I write again?

I wouldn’t write again. You’ve tried to make amends and they are not having any of it. Family can react very badly to loss, and look to others to lash out at. If you get in touch again, you may well get another rebuff and that won’t make you feel any better. Better put it behind you.

Dog walking reduces dementia Every year, dementia results in the deaths of 67,000 people. With numbers like this set to grow in the future, researchers are in a race against time to find new treatments for dementia. Recent data published in the JAMA Network Open suggests activities such as walking the dog or going for a short walk could reduce a

person’s risk of dementia. Professor Boyoung Joung of internal medicine at Yonsei University College of Medicine in South Korea explained light-intensity exercise “is associated with metabolism, and this vascular, cellular, and metabolic change by light-intensity exercise could be beneficial in reducing dementia risk”.

What´s Next in the Road Safety Plan? The Road Safety Action Plan for 20222023 is the starting point for the implementation of the 2030 Road Safety Strategy, which aims to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries in traffic accidents by 50% for the year 2030. This first plan of the strategy brings together all the measures and actions that will be introduced and developed in the next biennium to transform mobility and make it safe. It should be noted that the 20222023 plan is firmly committed to education, training, and information so that all road users are aware, educated and trained. It is also committed to introducing improvements in vehicles and infrastructures, as well as new actions to monitor and control traffic regulations. TRAINED AND CAPABLE PEOPLE As the first plan of the strategy is firmly committed to education, it has been decided to introduce road safety education in primary, secondary and high school education. Likewise, the extension of the STARS project has been approved to promote the safe school route. The European STARS project (Accreditation and Recognition of Sustainable Travel for Schools), aims to encourage and reward educational centres that encourage sustainable and safe travel among their students, both on foot and by bicycle. Accessibility for people with language difficulties and intellectual disabilities to DGT examination services will also be improved and specific assessment centres for drivers with motor disabilities will be created. Likewise, it is intended that the theoretical test by computer to the displaced examination centres will be extended; incorporate new ADAS systems (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) in aptitude and behaviour control tests to obtain a driver’s licence; update the medical-psychological examination protocol at Driver Recognition Centres (CRC); and review the periods of validity of the driving

licence, which may see a shorter period between renewals for older drivers implemented. On the other hand, one of the measures that has attracted the most attention has been the introduction of the new B1 driving licence, which will authorise the driving quadricycles with an engine whose empty mass is less than or equal to 400 kilograms and with an engine whose maximum power is less than or equal to 15 kW. This will also benefit younger drivers, thus improving mobility in more rural areas, it is hoped. Lastly, training courses will be developed on risks for users of bicycles and Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP) and other specific courses for users of motorcycles and mopeds. ZERO TOLERANCE FOR RISKY BEHAVIOURS In order to deal with risky behaviour on roads, the number of section speed cameras on conventional roads will be increased, the main risk behaviours on interurban roads will be monitored, new technologies will be applied to the surveillance of risky behaviour and will see the implementation of the alcolock system, a device that prevents the vehicle from starting if the driver has consumed alcohol, in public passenger transport. In addition, the General Circulation Regulations have been modified to improve the protection of vulnerable groups and regulations have been developed regarding Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP), related to the minimum age or the use of safety equipment. It is also currently under discussion that compulsory insurance may be required for Personal Mobility Vehicles. SAFE CITIES AND ROADS The new generic speed limits on urban roads that came into force in May 2021 will be monitored and evaluated. In addition, the regulation of Low Emission Zones (ZBE) will be supported and recommendation documents will be prepared, paying some attention to loading and unloading in urban areas.

Different design solutions will also be created to improve safety on interurban roads by means of lateral clearances, the smoothing of margins, the installation of containment systems, the elimination of ditches or the construction of safety ditches... Likewise, the 2+1 roads, whose objective is to avoid frontal and frontolateral collisions on roads without physical separation of directions.2+1 road is a specific category of three-lane road, consisting of two lanes in one direction and one lane in the other, alternating every few kilometres, and usually separated with a steel cable barrier. The second lane allows fastermoving traffic to overtake slower vehicles at regular intervals. Crossing safety will also improve, as will pedestrian safety on intercity roads. The first plan of the strategy also refers to the implementation of cycle paths on interurban roads and the installation of protection systems for motorcyclists. On the other hand, the DGT 3.0 platform will be integrated with data on works, sports events, special transport and roadside assistance vehicles. In addition, the catalogue of vertical and horizontal signs will be updated, as well as the beaconing elements. SAFE AND CONNECTED VEHICLES The 2022-2023 Plan includes the approval and dissemination of the manual of characteristics of Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP), which establishes the technical requirements that scooters must meet in order to be put into circulation. Likewise, as mentioned, the promotion of compulsory insurance for Personal Mobility Vehicles is included in the plan. For its part, the new Regulation of Historic Vehicles is introduced, which provides these vehicles with a treatment similar to that received in other countries of our socioeconomic environment. Lastly, there is an emphasis on promoting the use of the airbag for motorcyclists when accessing driving licences, and the use of electric vehicles in driving licence exams is encouraged.

Washing Your Car in the Street Can Lead to a Fine There are some fines that might seem a little excessive or unnecessary in traffic law, but they are all based on making the roads safer. If you don’t keep your car clean you could face a fine of 80 or 200 euro fine, depending on the surface of the car that is covered. The most punished element is the number plate, which must be kept clear, and the sanction could reach a whopping 6,000 euro, plus the loss of 6 points. But we have to abide by the rules when cleaning the car too. Specifically, you are not allowed to wash your car on a public road. According to article 4.2 of the General Circulation Regulations, “it is prohibited to throw, deposit or abandon objects or materials on the road that may hinder free movement, stopping or parking, make them dangerous or damage the road or its facilities”. Interpreting the law, when washing the car liquids and other substances are deposited that alter the road. For example, they make the road more

slippery, which could prove hazardous to other road users. This, in the opinion of the DGT, justifies the consequent fine. How much would it be? It depends on the municipality where you live, and can start from 30 to 3,000 euro. Of course, following this law, it is also not permitted to repair or carry out maintenance work on the vehicle, such as changing the oil, on public roads. There are also environmental laws which you could fall foul of. When

we take our vehicle to a car wash, the water is recycled, and they have environmental policies to ensure that no damage is inflicted on the delicate local ecosystems. Introducing pollutants such as soap into the local environment can be damaging, and therefore is also, theoretically, sanctionable. So, however we look at it, it is far better to take our car to an authorised car wash, and on a regular basis in order to keep it clean.

Fitzpatrick wins US open Fitzpatrick finished on six under to claim his first victory as a professional on American soil; Rory McIlroy in tiedfifth after a one-under 69. Fitzpatrick mixed five birdies with three bogeys during an enthralling final day, with a two-under 68 enough to finish on six under and celebrate a first success on American soil as a professional. The 27-year-old birdied two of his last five holes to finish a

shot clear of playing partner Zalatoris and Scheffler, who fell just short in his bid for a second major and fifth PGA Tour title of the year, with Hideki Matsuyama finished three strokes off the pace in fourth Victory sees Fitzpatrick become just the fourth English player in the last century to win the US Open, with the victory coming at the same venue where he won the US Amateur in 2013.

TALES FRoM THE ToP FLigHT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Another week, another new low for the world-famous Manchester United FC. And no, it’s not the Pogmentary where Paul Pogba called the club’s £300k a week offer as “nothing”. Only a couple of weeks after they quietly shelved the Ralf Rangnick consultancy role, club CEO Richard Arnold took to meeting fans in a pub to answer questions and allay frustrations at how utterly comical the club has been over the last few years. That’s right - United have found a new way to be considered a pub side. Speaking of pub sides, England lost 4-0 at home to Hungary in the infernal Nations League. And yes, I am fully aware that I was all for the Nations League when England were beating Spain away in the first go at the “these are better than friendlies, OK?” tournament. Gareth Southgate took the blame, accusing himself of not having the balance right - asking the team to attack a bit more and leaving the backline exposed. England fans also blamed Southgate and the media are slowly moving towards a ‘Southgate out’ campaign. Obviously, it’s not a good look. This Hungarian side are not the Mighty Magyars. But the Nations League is meaningless. Everything that happens in them gives Southgate some more information for what is actually important - the World Cup at the end of the year. Let’s judge it all after that, shall we? If a guy who has taken us to a World Cup semi-final and a Euros Final cannot get a bit of space to get it right ahead of the next tournament, who does get that space? And, equally - who would take over anyway? Now maybe the players can have a little bit of a break before they are slammed straight back into action before the Qatar tournament kicks off in November. Straight into the transfer chat this week now that matches seem to have

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 31st May we fished the first round of the summer series at the El Bosquet Complex. Summer has definitely arrived with a hot sunny day with temperatures approaching 30 degrees and 15 anglers took part. Overall winner on the day the was the man, the myth, the legend, Terry “Mr Pastry” Brindley. Draw on peg 3 he fished his usual big dollop of homemade paste on the pole to take a steady stream of carp and mullet for 17.30kg. In second place was Richard “Not so Tricky” King with 18.86kg. Drawn o the old back channel on peg 22 he caught

finally stopped for a couple of weeks. Liverpool have waved goodbye to Sadio Mane who is off to Bayern Munich after they upped their bid to what King Klopp deemed acceptable. Mane’s replacement is already in the house with the Nunez signing and Liverpool also won the race to get Aberdeen’s right-back Calvin Ramsey. A note to Scotland - you might want to start producing more than really good full-backs, folks. Tottenham are quietly going about some good business which feels a bit different to January’s last-minute trolley dash. Brighton’s self-proclaimed best midfielder in the Premier League, Yves Bissouma, has been snapped up for an at first-glace bargain price of £25m. There’s also talk of Clever Conte pushing for the signing of Lautaro Martinez from Inter. If they pull that off, Spurs win the transfer window for me. Arsenal have decided that the best way to try and win the Premier League is to sign players with the same names as those that won it in the past. As a result, Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira has been signed for £34m. But like all Arsenal plans, they are abandoning it early as they also signed Brazilian wonderkid Marquinhos. They are being linked to Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez, Leeds’ flying machine Raphinha and Leicester’s Youri Tielemens who will actually leave one day. Oh, and they are still hoping Gabby Jesus fancies turning out in red next season. Raheem Sterling will only leave Man City for a big club. Chelsea are a big club. Chelsea have new money and are now allowed to spend it. Therefore, the transfer rumour generator has thrown up Sterling to Chelsea this week. Tommy T would still like Barca’s Ousmane Dembele but only as a squad option out wide - because, you know, he doesn’t have enough of them already. Dembele is now less keen on a move to London. Chelsea are so keen to move Romelu Lukaku out that they’ll even swap him for a central defender - Milan Skiriniar of Inter. He’s good, but it would still represent a huge loss for the Blues. United, having learned how quickly they can do a deal with Dortmund with

on the pole and feeder with corn for 16.96kg. In third place was the everconsistent Neil McBernie. Drawn on what he considers a great peg, peg 32 he caught carp across on maggots on the pole for 15.100kg. Other section winners were Steve “Cinderella” Higgins who possibly fishing his last match before returning to the uk and joining the Chelsea Pensioners eked out 6.14kg from peg A1 and Paul Davis with 5.04kg from peg 36. The pairs event was a very close affair with only 500grammes separating the top 3 pairs. The winners were Richard

this stance, are waiting for Barcelona to drop Frenkie’s transfer fee. Rather just going out and getting Erik Ten Hag’s number one target, a player that he actually has a plan for, the club’s transfer brains trust is going to wait as long as possible for the price to come down. Fans already keen on buying a shirt with De Jong on the back might want to wait until next summer based on previous results of this strategy. Jose Mourinho will be hoping that Ronaldo was a big Nemanja Matic fan. He’d like to take CR7 to Rome and apparently he’s keen - but that’s more to do with just wanting out of United than the thought of latching on to Matic’s one forward pass a season. Phil Jones might end up at Leeds, one way to become even less popular with Man United fans. Leeds will be doing as much trying not to sell most of their best players this summer but have also brought one in just in case. Marc Roca has been lured from Bayern Munich. David Moyes was one of the few managers to get a tune out of Adnan Januzaj and he’s now available from Real Sociedad. I am sure you can work out he is now being linked to the Hammers. West Ham have also realised Vlasic isn’t up to Premier League levels so he’s being bombed out on loan. Everton have realised they signed the wrong Ukrainian left-back in January so now want Oleksandr Zinchenko from Man City. City want Marc Cucurella from Brighton as the replacement and he’ll cost about £35m which will mean Graham Potter has a bit of a rebuild on his hands. Pep’s also keeping an eye on Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri who is French. I

King and Alan Hill with 22.86kg. Rods N reels TThe following day we made the short trip across to the Rio Segura at Murcia town centre. For various reasons several members were unable to attend which meant that only 4 hardy souls turned out. Upon arrival the river was a funny looking colour and one of the locals informed me that it had suffered some sort of pollution. This was without doubt the case and a few dead fish and unusually at least 3 dead terrapins came floating past during the match. Fishing was patchy to say

genuinely assumed he was Portuguese and not just for the bants. Kalvin Phillips is still City’s preferred next signing, however. Frank Lampard also hopes to unveil James Tarkowski this coming week, no doubt trying to solve the Michael Keane isn’t very good issue. There’s going to be a summer Baleometer again - this time, it is pointing high to Cardiff but Newcastle, Villa and Spurs are casting respectful glances in his direction. Gareth isn’t that bothered apparently. It’s only going to be for three months, after all. Newly promoted Nottingam Forest have £100m to spend and want Dean Henderson on loan, Liverpool defender Nico Williams on loan and Mainz defender Moussa Niakhate, plus Union Berlin forward Taiywo Awoniyi (ex-Liverpool, apparently). He netted 15 goals in Bundesliga last season and could be a great shout of a signing. Naturally, that endorsement smells of no goals at all and a January loan back to Germany. Southampton have snapped up exPompey loan keeper Gavin Bazunu from City and let their rivals know all about it. Is it cool to mock your local rivals when they are two divisions below you? The Saints also look like getting Chris Richards from Bayern Munich, who must be being fed the same lines as Marc Roca. Another new feature I am trialling is Grealish-watch in Las Vegas. Tuesday night, couldn’t locate him at all. Saturday night? Falling out of a Las Vegas casino with a mystery brunette on his arm. Admittedly, this is probably not what the club GPS was intended for.

the least. Winner on the day taking advantage of a good draw was river specialist Bill Reade. Drawn just before the bridge he fished the method feeder about three quarters of the way across with either pellet, corn or wafters for 17.16kg. In second place was new member Terry Stroud. Also drawn before the first bridge he used similar tactics to Bill to weigh 10.24kg. In third place was myself, Ian Brown with 8.26kg which consisted of about

10 carp. I mainly fished bread in the method feeder about 10m off the far bank. Drawn on the first peg after the bridge, it was definitely a case of what could have been. I lost a minimum of 12 decent fish in some sort of huge snag that was in the middle towards the bridge, no matter what I did every fish I hooked headed for this snag which I think was a large tree.
