England bans overseas travel From Thursday, holidays both inside England and abroad will be banned until 2 December, as the British government tries to stop a second wave of Covid-19

from spreading. The government has also said people must not travel to second homes either in the UK or abroad. "Sadly... our message is people should stay at home," said Cabinet Minister Michael Gove. What does this mean for those travelling from England to Alicante? Consumer group Which? advises that if you booked a package holiday that includes flights and accommodation abroad, then you are entitled to a full

refund. However if you booked flights yourself and your airline chooses not to cancel them, you could lose your money. Johan Lundgren, chief executive of EasyJet, said "it is likely" that much of EasyJet's UK schedule will be cancelled during England’s new lockdown, with flying set to resume in early December. Many airlines are asking customers not to try to contact them, saying passengers will be notified about changes to their bookings once more detail is made available from the government. If you are already here in Spain The government is not requiring people already on holiday to cut short their trips. "British nationals currently abroad do not need to return home immediately," said a government statement, “However, you should check with your airline or travel operator on arrangements for returning.” The ban on foreign travel comes just days after the government added the Canary Islands to the travel corridor list, meaning holidaymakers could travel there without having to self-isolate on their return - a move that sparked an

immediate surge in bookings – many of which will now have to be cancelled. "The UK Government should surely have seen a week ago that it shouldn't have been reopening travel corridors if there was a possibility that it would need to then completely reverse that decision and implement a lockdown," said Emma Coulthurst from price comparison site TravelSupermarket. The British government says, “Overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences will not be allowed. This includes holidays abroad and in the UK. It also means you cannot stay in a second home, if you own one, or staying with anyone you do not live with or are in a support bubble with. There are specific exceptions, for example if you need to stay away from home (including in a second home) for work purposes, but this means people cannot travel overseas or within the UK, unless for work, education or other legally permitted reasons.” The current rules apply to people resident in England. It is not yet clear how rules in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will interact or conflict with the new legislation.

Alicante Phone data reveals stats on bank holiday trips figures soar over last fortnight Covid-19 infections have soared over the last two weeks in the Alicante province. The current number of active cases is more than double what it was in midOctober. The situation is especially complicated in the health departments of Elda, Orihuela and the two health areas of Elche. Infections per 100,000 inhabitants have shot up, from an average of 104.69 to 227.15. However, for the purposes of infection control, areas are divided by health department rather than geographically and in the departments of Elda, Orihuela, Elche-Hospital General and Elche-Crevillent, all have an incidence in the last 14 days of more than 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Figures in Alcoy, Vinalopó, Elda, Pinoso and Petrer are also cause for concern. The outlook in the Orihuela health department is also far from rosy. The latest figures show that Orihuela has registered an incidence of 410.78 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and even worse is the situation of Callosa de Segura, with 493.75.

Sunday 1st November was a ‘red day’ and in some autonomous communities, the bank holiday was carried forward to the Monday – not here in the Valencian Community, but elsewhere many people enjoyed a long weekend. The usual influx of visitors was greatly reduced due to the closure of autonomous community borders. However, government figures have just been released about the long weekend which took place earlier in October when the Valencian Community enjoyed a four day weekend due to the 9th and 12th October bank holidays. The government’s mobility study found that during the October bank holiday weekend, the Alicante province had an influx of visitors from many other areas of Spain, particularly from CastillaLa Mancha and the Basque Country. The study also found that people from Alicante also went to Andalusia and Aragon. The closure of Madrid limited movement into and out of the region, although many locals here reported the arrival of Madridian neighbours despite

people from Madrid asked to stay at home when the region went into lockdown in mid October. The study was carried out by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, which as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, was able to monitor the position of mobile phones. The report indicated that, between October 8 and 13, displacements between Alicante and other provinces were eight times more than usual. In addition, the analysis of phone data allowed those behind the study to see the origin and destination of trips, making it possible to see in detail where visitors came from and where the people from Alicante went for the long weekend. For example, on October 8 and 9 there were twice as many trips from Ciudad Real than on a normal day, and three times more on the 9th from Toledo. On the 12th there were 6.57 times more trips from Ciudad Real to Alicante than on a normal Monday, while from Toledo the trips were multiplied by 5.54.

Pilar drug haul

Local Police of Pilar de la Horadada found more than five thousand cannabis plants and several bags of buds ready for sale in two old agricultural greenhouses adapted for the illegal cultivation in the northwest of the municipality. The discovery of this plantation on almost a thousand square meters, was made by chance – and a keen sense of smell. A regular patrol runs through the Pinar de Campoverde urbanisation and had been detecting the strong characteristic smell of marijuana for some time. The nasty niff seemed to come from an old greenhouse agricultural facility next to the CV-925, between the Lo Romero golf course and the

first roundabout from Pinar de Campoverde. The Local Police patrol stopped the vehicle to inspect the area and noticed movement inside the greenhouse - the Civil Guard, which has a barracks located about ten kilometres away, did not have a patrol out at at that time, so the officers acted alone. When they approached the access they gave the warning shout of "Police!!" and at least four people fled from the farm and managed to escape on a preprepared route. Inside they found a huge quantity of cannabis plants - 5,012 to be exact and two bags with more than two kilos of buds prepared for sale. On Sunday the

Local Police returned to continue their investigation on this plantation and to secure the area and found two other large sacks full of buds with a weight yet to be determined. The people in charge of the cultivation lived next to the greenhouse - the Local Police surprised them when they were eating. Surprisingly, this greenhouse is located next to a very busy road - which connects the urban area of Pilar de la Horadada with one of its most populated urbanisations - and is very visible, although with the advantage of going unnoticed among the hundreds of terraces under plastic, which are common in this area of the west of the municipality.

Earthquake shakes local communities An earthquake on the Southern Costa Blanca was widely felt among the population at 8:55pm on Sunday. With a magnitude of 2.6, it initially stood at 2.9, although it may be modified depending on the data collected by the National Seismic Network and the National Geographic Institute. The epicentre was located in the sea, six kilometers deep, off the coast of Cabo Cervera, in Torrevieja. The tremor was felt by many residents of Torrevieja, Guardamar, Los Montesinos, Orihuela Costa, San Miguel de Salinas, San Fulgencio and Rojales. Minutes after the earthquake and in a short period of time, another three micro-earthquakes occurred in the same area. Subsequently, another tremor of greater intensity was registered at 4.07am on Monday morning with magnitude 2.5 which shook many residents awake. It is one of the hundreds of microearthquakes that occur in the Vega Baja throughout the year. Normally, only those that exceed magnitude 2 are felt by the population, earth tremors are very familiar to local residents. In addition to the magnitude, seismologists measure the intensity of the earthquake, which evaluates how the population has felt and the damage it causes. Sunday’s quake has been set as a grade III of a scale of XII, which is "weak", according to information from the National Seismic Network. The Bajo Segura is one of the areas of Spain with the highest seismic risk in Spain. The last tremor of medium intensity occurred on 24th March, 2019 off the coast of Cape Palos in Murcia, where the IGN registered 4.3 on the Richter seismic scale, according to Efe.

Farmers of Novelda back on their tractors to disinfect the streets Novelda town hall has resumed the disinfection of public roads through the street cleaning service and with the collaboration of local farmers. The disinfection work will be carried out daily between 07:30 am and 10:30 am, so the population of Novelda is asked to "be extremely careful during that time, as disinfectant products will be sprayed." Selling property can be motivated by a variety of reasons. It might be that you’ve outgrown a house, that it’s time to downsize, or that there are negative memories associated with it. Just because you may not stand to make a lot of money doesn’t mean selling isn’t going to greatly improve the quality of your life. The time to sell might just be now! What can you gain by selling and downsizing, or selling and investing in an up-andcoming neighborhood, or a house that needs to be renovated? What if you could move and find a phenomenal, affordable new home? Look at the big picture and not at just one transaction. Evaluate all costs, and not just the monetary ones. You could be getting rid of high maintenance fees, monthly mortgage payments, community fees, or a commute that’s killing you slowly Monday to Friday. Maybe you adore your present home and never thought of moving, but it’s too far from family, friends, church, or work and has become geographically challenging.

‘Tesco’ opens in Quesada Locals flocked to the opening of The Food Co’s ‘Tesco’ store near Quesada last week and your favourite weekly read, the Costa Blanca People was on hand to help mark the celebration. First through the door was Robert Davison, a local resident who started queuing around 7.45am. By the time much-loved entertainer Stevie Spit cut the ribbon at 10am, the queue was round the block. Luckily, the crowds were entertained by Sunshine FM’s Pat Martin who helped pass the time. The first 1,000 customers through the door received a Tesco branded shopping bag with a mini-bottle of prosecco, a pack of mince pies and a bottle of sparking orange. Store Manager Ben Cumpstone is one of the eight team members that have worked for The Food Co longterm and recently opened its Ibiza store. Ben said: “We are hoping to welcome thousands of new customers today. The Quesada store has created 30 local jobs and there are now five ‘Tesco’ stores in Spain with the sixth about to open in Mijas, Costa del Sol. Of course there are festive bargains galore and the home favourites were already proving a huge hit with the expat community. The freshly baked section includes Tiger bread and there is also a

selection of the popular Tesco sandwich meal deals, just like in the UK, at 4.50€. First through the till was 13year-old Max and his 11-year-old friend Cory who popped in for sweets, pop and crisps! The first adult shopper was Carlene who just couldn’t resist stocking up on those much-missed goodies from home.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Covid crushed any sense of optimism coming to the markets, and sterling didn’t fare any better than the other majors. Roughly unchanged in a rather uneventful week, it was flat against the euro, but behind the US dollar by 1.2% and lost 1.7% to the safe-haven Japanese yen. Why? A resurgence of Covid-19 and new, increasing lockdown measures meant investors got the jitters, with nearly a fifth of England under the tightest tiered restrictions from next week. UK economic data was few and far between, so a very quiet week for sterling. The provisional purchasing managers’ indices for manufacturing and services were lower on the month but, at 53.3 and 52.3, still comfortably within the expansion zone above 50. However, there was little to connect the rather unexciting PMIs and the pedestrian pound, because the data was long gone by the time sterling stalled. It appears all are waiting for news on the government’s renewed trade negotiations with the EU. Anecdotal coverage of Brexit negotiations pointed towards progress in the talks but there was no official corroboration. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said “We are making good progress but the two critical issues, level playing field and fisheries, there we would like to see more progress.” PM Boris Johnson was also forced to deny he was dragging his heels on a Brexit decision to wait out on the outcome of the US election.

EURO Hobbling along also because of Covid-19, the euro was on average unchanged on the week. Germany and France are joining Spain, the Czech Republic and the other growing number of countries returning to some level of lockdown. Being termed a ‘lockdown light’ in Germany, and in France people will only be allowed to leave home for essential work or medical reasons. The EU has created a common strategy for the roll-out of a vaccine but that vaccine is not yet available and might not be for another two years. If that does turn out to be the case, the negative economic implications will be considerable. For now the data readings continue in a similar tone to last month. Most of the provisional purchasing managers’ indices for October did not differ greatly from the September readings. At 49.4, the composite figure was a touch higher than forecast. The EU’s confidence measures were little changed while the IFO reported that sentiment among German business leaders “has clouded over” and export expectations were “much worse”. In other news, the European Central Bank released its report on monetary developments in the Eurozone and the October bank lending survey. The former showed broad money supply M3 growing at an annual 10.4%, its fastest rate in more than 12 years. The latter revealed “tighter lending criteria across all loan categories”. Thus, banks are being more selective about how much they lend and what conditions they apply.

I never saw any alcoholism in my childhood, my parents didn't even drink. We had a bar and I remember as a young child being fascinated with the bar it was a manly space and guys would come in and drink a large bottle of Guinness and maybe a whiskey with it, lean on the counter and talk about manly things. They smoked cigarettes and I couldn't wait to join them.

I took a drink around the same time as a lot of my friends around the young teenage years. We were doing normal things that normal guys do, a few bottles of beer behind the hedge on the way to a teenage disco and it gave me the ability to talk to girls, to dance, to fit in. I never really liked the taste but I really liked the effects and I suppose I took every opportunity I got to take a drink but that wasn't often because we didn't have much money and we had parents. When I left school I went to college and my drinking took off. I could drink on a Monday lunchtime or on Wednesday evening, there was always company to drink with. I never realised it but even at this time alcohol started to make decisions for me. It had taken sports from my life as I couldn’t train or discipline myself and because I was partying so

much I failed my exams and then I got a job for the summer so I didn't retake my exams. I now had a job and money and I got used to being able to fund my life, I thought myself very grown up. Eventually I did go back to college but I changed course to an easier course where I wouldn't have to study so I could drink away. I got a job in the west of Ireland and there, things really escalated, I was drinking daily, I was justifying everything by saying “I work hard and I play hard”. I was very accepting of the drinking life, there were plenty of blackouts, hangovers, broken promises, broken relationships, broken hearts but I accepted everything. I just thought it was all part of life but then the consequences began to become more serious. I began to get arrested, sacked,

I couldn't remember the sequence of events, things were very hazy and there was an awful lot about my behaviour that I didn't like. I started doing something that I know today as “geographicals”, moving to a new place with different people so I could leave problems behind me and every time I moved the same thing happened. I d ́ have a new job,a new girlfriend and a new town, everything would work for a while, I'd behave myself but then I ́ d start to drink as I only know how and the trouble would start and everything I had built up I'd pull down around my ears. I did this a number of times in my 20s and I always blamed other people. I never blamed myself and I never ever blamed alcohol. At the age of 27 I ended up very drunk one night after being ejected from a local nightclub I was drinking alone in a bar in which I worked. I was drinking a pint of Guinness and I fell off the stool and split my head open on a flagstone floor. I knew, somehow that the game was up and I rang an ambulance to come and get me. That was my last drink to date. Plenty of more serious things had happened to me previous to this but this was my “moment of clarity”. Sometime after this I went to a doctor and told him about my drinking. He gave me the number of a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Reluctantly I made the phone call and I didn't realise it at the time

but this was the greatest decision that I ever made. I remember nothing about my first meeting, only that I was there and I went to another one, the date was the 29th of February 1996. Today I have a great life, full of potential and possibilities. I've done lots of things in sobriety, I've got married, I moved to Spain and moved back to Ireland, I have taken jobs, I have left jobs, I've taken holidays, I've climbed mountains and I have even jumped out of an aeroplane. I owe Alcoholics Anonymous my life, it has shown me how to live a worthwhile life with the full knowledge of my place within the world. I hope to have many more sober years ahead of me, living life on life's terms, one day at a time. If alcohol is costing you more money, maybe this could work for you too, don't be afraid to make the first step. I was, but the hand of fellowship is always out. Do you have a problem with Alcohol? Is Alcohol costing you more than money? If you can answer yes to one or both of these questions, for help contact the AA on:

Should we be worried about the hospital situation? Yes, says the Mayor. The Costa Blanca People was granted an exclusive interview with the Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón in order to discuss the events unfolding at Torrevieja hospital. For those readers who don’t already know the situation here is a brief summary: The hospital is publicly owned and privately managed by a company called Ribera Salud. The initial contract to run the hospital was for 15 years and is now entering its last year. Recently, the Valencian government announced that it would not be renewing Ribera Salud’s contract to run the hospital and instead, it would be publicly run when the current contract comes to an end in 2021. Many readers have been asking questions to the Costa Blanca People and to Torrevieja Town Hall as there remains much confusion about the situation. So much so that some readers even believed that the hospital was going to close. To clear up any confusion we sat down face to face with the Mayor this week to find out if the large community of international residents here should be aware of, or worried about, the situation at the hospital. In short, his answer was ‘Yes, we should be very worried.’ Why? There are a number of reasons which we will outline below. Track record To get a picture of what the future might look like for Torrevieja hospital, we can look at what has already happened at Ribera Hospital in Alzira, Valencia. Also a publicly owned hospital, it was privately managed by Ribera Salud and then reverted back to the hands of the public health authority. All reports indicate that the standard of care at the hospital is not the same as it was. The waiting list has spiralled out of control and news emerged this week that the A&E department is on the verge of collapse. According to unions, the situation at the moment is critical and staff are demanding urgent resources to cope. Reports in ABC, La Razon and other news outlets this week claim that patients on trolleys are lining the corridors and there is talk of having to erect a tent hospital outside to cope. The Mayor told the Costa Blanca People “If people are wondering what to expect when Torrevieja hospital is handed back to the public health system, then we have a perfect example. Ribera hospital was in the same situation, and look at it now just a year down the road. Waiting lists are up 150%, staff claim they have no resources, it is chaos.” Language There is no other public hospital in the Valencian Community (possibly, in the whole of Spain) where patients can be dealt with directly in a number of other European and international languages such as English, French and even Russian. One of the requirements to work at Torrevieja Hospital is language skills – this was a condition set out by Ribera Salud because the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa area have a 50% foreign population. Campaigners believe that by reverting the hospital to public hands, the foreign language offering will diminish. Furthermore, the Valencian government plans to impose the Valencian language here too. Similar to the situation being forced upon schools (which requires

children who don’t speak Valencian as a first or second language to learn core subjects through Valencian), the Mayor confirmed that a similar situation is unfolding in the public sector. He explained, “The staffing situation is very unclear, which I will explain further later, but in terms of language – if the hospital is run by Valencia, they are going to impose a requirement that staff have a qualification in Valenciano. This might sound reasonable, but if management are filling a job post and the candidate with less experience has Valencian, while the more qualified person doesn’t, you can imagine what is going to happen.” Even in general terms, the language rules being brought in by Valencia will have an impact here in the Vega Baja. The regional government wants Valencian to be the principal language used in and by town halls – even in Spanish speaking areas like the southern Costa Blanca. What this means for residents is that all communications, letters and administrative processes in the town hall would first and foremost be in Valenciano. The Mayor added “If a citizen gets a letter from the town hall in Valencian, they will have the right to answer the letter in Castellano, and then the town hall must answer further correspondence in Castellano, but expecting people who do not speak Valenciano in the first place to understand the initial letter is unacceptable. This is an issue we (the PP) are currently fighting in the Valencian court, but it will impact on the management of the hospital.” Sitting in on our meeting was Gitte Lund Thomsen, the Councillor for foreign residents. Originally from Denmark, Gitte speaks seven languages, including Spanish and English – but not Valencian. Gitte was elected to local government was part of Eduardo Dolon’s most recent campaign, but when the next local election comes around, there is a real possibility that Gitte will not even be allowed be considered for a role in local government because she is not certified in Valenciano. Staff In the run up to the announcement of the renewal of the hospital contract, staff at Torrevieja hospital had had little communication and no confirmation from the Valencian government about their own contractual situations. From surgeons and specialists to porters and administration staff, hospital workers staged weekly protests outside the doors of A&E as unions demanded at least a face to face meeting with government officials to discuss what will happen to staff if and when the hospital management changes. The Mayor told us, “They are still waiting. They have been told the situation will be clarified within the coming year, but their future remains unclear. Those currently employed, 90% of them are on a fixed contract and good working conditions. Will this continue? They don’t know. They have been talking to staff at Ribera Hospital in Alzira, they were in the same situation last year before Ribera Hospital was handed back to the public system and the staff there are warning staff in Torrevieja hospital that promises have been broken and working issues remain unresolved.” The Mayor likened the situation to premier league football. “The top

Torrevieja Hospital

specialists can demand higher salaries as they are excellent at what they do. A company like Ribera Salud has the financial backing to entice the best of the best. What happens when the money isn’t there to pay for the best? Look at what happened at Ribera hospital when it went back to public hands, 50% of their specialists have left! It’s like the best football teams – the ones with better resources can pay for the best and most skilled players, it’s as simple as that.” Waiting lists There is no denying that while we are in the middle of a global pandemic, the health system will be under pressure. That said, according to the latest figures from the health ombudsman, Torrevieja Hospital has an average waiting list four times lower than the average Figures from the regional healthcare audit reveal that hospitals in the Valencian Community have an average waiting time of 151 days, Torrevieja currently has a waiting list of 35. The Mayor remarked, “Now is not the time to be gambling with people’s health – we are in the middle of a global pandemic and what is already working well should not be changed.” Investment, finance and political point scoring Those opposed to the running of Torrevieja Hospital by a private company, the Mayor believes, are using the issue for political point scoring. “How can someone be opposed to getting the best out of healthcare? The reality is that for every euro spent on healthcare, Ribera Salud has the ability and experience to get more for that same euro than if it was being spent by the public system. No one has a problem that cleaning services or catering services are outsourced to private companies so if a private company does a better job on overall management, keeps waiting lists down and patient satisfaction high, then how can anyone have a problem with that. The reality is, as we have seen at Ribera hospital, bad management costs more money, costs more time and impacts directly on patients.” According to the Sindicadura de Comptes, (the external independent

Alberto de Rosa, CEO of Ribera Salud (pictured in July) reveals the €40m strategic investment project

body which oversees the financial administration of the Valencian Community), Torrevieja health department is 30% more efficient than other public hospitals in the Valencian Community – this translates into a €45 million euro annual saving for the public purse. The original management contract required that Ribera Salud invested €80m in Torrevieja Health Department over the 15 year term. However, accounts indicate that by July 2020, it had already invested over €117m. In terms of future investment, Ribera Salud had announced plans for a 20212026 investment project in local health infrastructure, valued at €40m. This included projects such as €1m for the improvement of Guardamar health centre, investment in the latest state of the art machinery and diagnostic equipment and plans to construct a €6m health centre for Orihuela Costa to serve the growing population there. The Valencian Government has made no indication of a similar investment project. A statement issued this week by Carmen Morate of Los Verdes (the Green party in Torrevieja) says that those in favour of leaving Torrevieja Hospital in the hands of Ribera Salud argue that people are happy with the situation as it stands. She says, “For example, the British, the

most abundant foreign nationality in this area. But let me say that their opinion should not be an example because England has a shabby health system (I know, because I lived there) so it is not surprising that they are satisfied with the free universal healthcare they receive in Spain.” We put this to the Mayor and to the Councillor for Foreign Residents, Gitte Lund Thomsen, who both agree that as foreign residents make up half the population of this area, their opinion is of vital importance and should not be simply dismissed. What can be done? The Valencian government says that there is no going back and that the decision not to renew the contract is irreversible. However, there is a citizens’ action group called Plataforma Sanidad Excelente which was formed back in February. When the situation at Ribera Hospital began to unfold, campaigners decided to form the group to try to stop the same thing happening in Torrevieja. While their initial campaign was unsuccessful, the group remains active and anyone who would like to find out more about the situation at the hospital is welcome to get in touch via the website www.plataformasanidadtorrevieja.es

Shop Local

CostaBlancaPeople 3rd - 9th November 2020

SHOP LOCAL In September, the Costa Blanca People launched our ‘Shop Local’ initiative, a campaign to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. So far, the campaign has been really well received among local business owners and it is encouraging to see so many businesses becoming advocates for the campaign by sharing the logo, supporting the initiative and voicing their support for fellow business owners in the area. Already, the campaign has had a positive impact with some of those displaying the logo already reporting that they have won new business this week as a direct result which is a wonderful result! We are seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic and believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. With local businesses still reeling from lockdown, this summer has been difficult for us all. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the winter months. Why have we launched this campaign? As the global pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to life on the Costa Blanca, we all need to do everything we possibly can to help our local economy bounce back stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve launched

our Shop Local campaign. We want to engage in partnership with local business leaders to give our towns, commercial centres, retailers, small businesses and charitable organisations a boost. We want to help businesses, shops, restaurants and entrepreneurs the support they need to continue to make the southern Costa Blanca a great place to live, work and socialise. How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal in your social media posts. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours. Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get

on board, and become our own advocates - ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Making this campaign visible – on your social media (check our our ‘frame’ for your profile picture, search for ‘Shop Local Costa Blanca’ in frame options when you edit your profile picture to add a frame), in your window or place of business will help ensure it works and stays in the forefront of people’s minds. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Why shopping local works Shopping at local businesses puts money right back into the local economy, and by spending money in our local shops, restaurant, café or bar, we can all do our bit to help revive our local economy. Supporting our local businesses creates jobs in local communities. Helping to grow the number of jobs in our local areas makes for a better place to live and work, which then creates a healthy economy for the community here on the Costa Blanca. Small businesses are often run by people who live in or near our local community. As the southern Costa Blanca continues to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people may have missed.

Prolific coronavirus strain started in Spain and spread across Europe A coronavirus strain that emerged in Spain in June has spread across Europe and now makes up a large proportion of the infections in several countries, researchers have said. This highlights the role of travel in the pandemic and the need to track mutations. The variant, which has not been found to be inherently more dangerous, was first identified among farm workers in the eastern Spanish regions of Aragon and Catalonia. Over the last two months, it has accounted for close to 90 percent of new infections in Spain, according to the research paper, authored by seven researchers with backing by Swiss and Spanish publicsector science institutions. The strain has crossed European borders and accounted for 40-70 percent of new infections in Switzerland, Ireland and the United Kingdom in September, they found. According to the report, published in Medrxiv, "the variant, called 20A.EU1 , was observed for the first time in

Spain in June" and has multiplied rapidly in European countries such as Switzerland, Ireland, United Kingdom, Norway, Latvia , the Netherlands and France, where there were already high levels of incidence in September. The study was carried out by a team led by Emma Hodcroft, a genetic biologist at the University of Basel (Switzerland), and in which IĂąaki Comas, an epidemiologist at the Valencia Institute of Biomedicine (IBVCSIC), also participated. The scientists said the strain's characteristic mutation did not give it any apparent edge and its success may be down to the people who caught it first being particularly mobile and sociable. But in some places outside Spain the variant's journey developed a dynamic of its own, indicating it may have a transmission advantage. "Its frequency in the UK has continued to increase even after quarantine-free travel was discontinued and the main summer travel period ended. Thus this variant might transmit

faster than competing variants," the researchers wrote. Efforts to sequence viral genomes differ widely across Europe, limiting their research, they said. "The rapid rise of these variants in Europe highlights the importance of genomic surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic... it is imperative to understand whether novel variants impact the severity of the disease."The World Health Organisation said in July that there was no evidence mutations of the virus had led to more severe disease. It formed a working group to better understand how mutations behave. All viruses make only imperfect copies of themselves when they infect a host but the tendency for this random drift varies between classes of viruses. Coronaviruses, which were also behind the 2002–2004 SARS outbreak, are known to be more stable than, for instance, the seasonal flu, which requires a new vaccine every year.

Ongoing curfew to be decided locally Spain’s government has U-turned on the nationwide curfew and has now announced it will only be enforced until Sunday, 8th November – after which it will be up to regional authorities to decide whether to prolong it. From last Sunday, when another 'state of alarm' was declared, the whole country – except the Canary Islands – was ordered to restrict movement overnight, but given some freedom as to the exact hours. The 'core' times during which nobody is allowed on the streets is 11pm to 6am, but regional governments are permitted to move both boundaries an hour in either direction. The wider Comunidad Valenciana continues to be among the least-affected regions; whilst far from virus-free, a huge number of its towns have no active cases at all, many of these have never had a single one, and in smaller towns, often only around one to four residents are infected. Given its favourable epidemiological data, the Comunidad Valenciana has not imposed any restrictions beyond those required by the national government – bar counters

cannot be used for at least two weeks, and overnight curfew is from midnight to 06.00 – and residents can largely get on with their lives provided they continue to observe the usual precautions of social distancing, masks, handwashing and reduced numbers in social and family gatherings.

barrage of opposition for his decision to extend the 'state of alarm' until May 2021 – over six months, and the longest in the country's democratic history – with several other parties calling it 'excessive' and the PP party saying it will only support the move if it does not stretch beyond 9th December. Sánchez's critics say he should amend the Public Health Act of 1986 instead, introducing a clause that permits blanket restrictions being imposed with immediate effect if these are deemed necessary at any point in the future and for any healthrelated reason.

The Murcia Region has confined the towns of Totana, Fortuna and Albanilla due to high local contagion rates, meaning residents cannot leave and nobody else can enter other than in exceptional circumstances, and the inside parts of all bars and restaurants are off limits, but in all other towns, 'New Normality' life will continue. Spanish president Pedro Sánchez has been met with a

Doing so would mean there was no need to maintain a 'state of alarm' for longer than a few weeks at a time as and when circumstances dictated, rather than putting this in place for six months 'just in case'. Also, Sánchez has come under fire from some quarters for 'passing the buck' to regional governments, by leaving it to their discretion to apply curfews and confinements, or not, after 8th November, with some of the opposition saying he is 'trying to avoid accountability'.

Tourism, retail and hairdressing see fewest Covid cases Tourism is responsible for fewer cases of Covid-19 in Spain than practically any other activity besides shopping and hairdressing salons, according to data published by the Secretary of State for Health. Since the end of lockdown in June, only 91 cases – linked to 14 'outbreaks' – have been detected in the country in hotels and other holiday accommodation, and all of them affecting workers rather than tourists themselves. An 'outbreak' is when several people test positive for Covid at once after having caught it in the same place or from the same source, and does not necessarily mean hundreds or even dozens; a group of four friends or immediate family members all catching it at the same time, for example, is considered an 'outbreak'. In the case of tourism employees, the average between summer and mid-October, or about four-and-a-half months, was 6.5 cases per 'outbreak'. None have been detected in the tourism industry since around 8th October. This low incidence is true of national and international tourism – although the latter has been very much reduced this year, around 25 percent of the

usual total of foreign visitors still came to Spain for their holidays, and no known outbreak has occurred as a result. Tourism is one of the leastaffected industries by Covid-19 contagion, beaten only by retail and hairdressing. Workers in shops and markets, says the Ministry of Health, were affected by 13 outbreaks, or a total of 74 cases nationwide, whilst hairdressing and beauty salons accounted for just 11 cases, in three outbreaks. The workplace was responsible for 13.3 percent of outbreaks and 18 percent of cases, whilst 26.4 percent of cases and 31.4 percent of outbreaks were of social origin. These are defined as family or friends meeting up, or members of the public participating in leisure activities – such as non-business travel to other regions (73 outbreaks and 431 cases, or 5.9 cases per outbreak). Restaurateurs and bar-owners have taken extra-stringent measures to ensure customers' safety – it is in their interests to do so, in order to be able to continue trading – these premises are generally safer than eating,

drinking or socialising at home. When family members meet for Sunday lunch or friends gather together in one home for a meal or drinks, they are less likely to socially-distance or wear masks, lulled into a false sense of security because they know each other well, and that this is where contagion is most likely to happen. Latest scientific research in Spain has found indications that the main culprit may be lack of ventilation in inside spaces, coupled with failure to sociallydistance. Investigators say microscopic particles exhaled when talking, shouting, sneezing, coughing or singing can hover in the air for up to eight hours in an indoor space, and are most concentrated within the first 30 to 60 minutes, meaning it is possible for contagion to occur even after an infected person has left the area. This does not mean it is impossible to catch it out in the open air – far from it – but researchers believe proper ventilation, where the air in a confined space is renewed completely every few minutes, may be key to reducing the viral load in the atmosphere and increasing safety.

Sticky cider onion hot dogs Ingredients 30g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 2 finely sliced onions 100ml dry cider 1 tbsp dark brown soft sugar 1 tbsp cider vinegar 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 2 tbsp mayonnaise 4 sausages 4 brioche hot dog buns

Method STEP 1 Melt the butter in a pan with the olive oil. Add the onions and a pinch of salt and fry for 25-30 mins or until caramelised. Add the cider and simmer until reduced. Stir in the sugar and vinegar. Mix the mustard with the mayonnaise. Cook the sausages following pack instructions. Split the hot dog buns and fill each with a sausage. Top with the onions and the mustard-mayo.

Sticky ginger skillet parkin Ingredients 200g salted butter , chopped 85g light brown soft sugar 85g treacle 185g golden syrup 250g self-raising flour 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp mixed spice 100g porridge oats 2 large eggs 2 tbsp milk 2 balls stem ginger from a jar, chopped, plus 2 tbsp syrup from the jar, and extra to serve Custard or ice cream, to serve (optional) Method STEP 1 Heat the oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2. Put a heavy-bottomed 25cm ovenproof frying pan or skillet over a low heat and gently melt the butter, sugar, treacle and golden syrup together, stirring with a wooden spoon, until the butter is just melted and everything is combined. Remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly for 5-10 mins. STEP 2 Unroll the croissant dough and divide into 3 rectangles. Pinch together the diagonal perforated seams, then cut

into long thin strips – you should get about 16 per rectangle. STEP 3 Sieve the flour and spices together, then mix in the oats. Whisk the eggs, milk, stem ginger and ginger syrup together in a bowl or jug. Stir the dry ingredients into the cooled butter mixture until well combined. Stir in the ginger, milk and egg mixture until you have a thick cake batter. Transfer to the oven and bake for 45-50 mins until firm and risen. Bonfire bangers & beans Ingredients 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 onion , finely chopped 2 celery sticks, finely chopped 4 rashers streaky bacon , chopped 1 tbsp tomato purĂŠe 2 x 400g cans chopped tomato 2 tbsp dark brown sugar 2 tsp Dijon mustard 2 thyme sprigs 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 2 x 400g cans cannellini beans , rinsed and drained 2 red peppers , deseeded and chopped 2 x 450g packs herby sausages Handful parsley leaves, chopped, to serve (optional) Method STEP 1 Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large flameproof casserole. Add the onion, celery and bacon, then cook for 5-10 mins until softened. Turn up the heat and add the tomato purĂŠe. While some are just down to impatience and laziness, others are downright dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. These are some of the most common bad cooking habits you should avoid. Not reading the recipe properly You've laid out the ingredients for a recipe you've been eager to try, you start reading through the steps and realise you've had to marinate the meat for at least two hours, or similar. There's almost no chance you can improvise at this point, especially if you're expecting guests or are not willing to eat hours later than planned. Before buying your ingredients, read the recipe steps not just the ingredients list and plan your time accordingly. Opening the oven Impatience is the root cause of many kitchen nightmares, especially when they involve oven temperatures and baking. It’s natural to want to watch your cakes rise, but every time you pop the door open, the oven cools down and takes time to get back up to temperature. It’s inefficient and extends the cooking time. It also means that a variety of bakes, from meringues to bread, may fail entirely. Not hot A hot pan sears meat properly, caramelising and browning it, which

improves both the appearance and enhances the flavour complexity. Failing to get the pan up to a fierce heat means missing out on all that potential. In fact, this goes for almost everything, not just steak. There's hardly anything you'd ever put in a cold pan straight away. Guessing baking quantities "A little bit of this and a little bit of that" can be a great approach to cooking savoury dishes. But try this approach with baking, not measuring out ingredients and your dish is likely to completely fail. There’s a reason most recipes are triple-tested before they’re published: they often don’t work if you're loose with the quantities. Baking is a very specific science, especially when it comes to ingredients reacting with each other to create rise, lamination and downright yumminess. Under-seasoning Whether it’s adding salt to boiling water for pasta or pepper to a rich stovetop stew, sometimes we forget the importance of seasoning. Seasoning mostly refers to just salt and pepper as they're both essential in balancing the dish, plus enhancing herbs and spices used in the recipe as well as other flavours. Note how many times cookery show contestants fail, purely because they didn’t season their dishes correctly. Barbecuing too early When we finally bust out the barbecue as the sun comes out, we often get a little over-excited and throw the meat on the grill while the coals are still kicking up

r r

massive flames. Cue meat – and vegetables – that are burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. Results will be much better if you wait for the flames to die down and cook using the hot coals.

preparing chicken and cook thoroughly to avoid contamination.

it

Forgetting to wash the veg We often unintentionally forget to wash fruit, vegetables and salad leaves. But it’s good practice to wash everything, rinsing off any pesticides, bacteria and dirt, thus reducing our chances of getting ill. It also makes it much less likely that caterpillars and any other insects will accidentally end up in your salad.

Not tasting as you cook For some reason this is rarely a problem when baking biscuits, but for other dishes we don’t always taste as we go. Without tasting a curry sauce, how do you know when it’s reached the heat level you like or whether a broth is seasoned enough? How about whether a sauce needs a little acidity or sweetness? You might get lucky when cooking familiar dishes you know by heart, but if you're trying something new, it's essential to taste as you go.

Washing raw meats Washing raw meat, like chicken or turkey, is an old-fashioned food safety myth. Rinsing meat will splash bacteria all over your kitchen, sink, cloths and utensils and the latest advice from health professionals is to avoid doing so. Instead, follow basic food hygiene while

Using old herbs and spices We all have an array of herbs and spices that don’t always see the light of day, which means when they do come out they’re not always in great condition. If a spice mix comes out of the jar in a solid lump, throw it out. Use fresh flavourings when you can,

especially herbs, chilli and similar, and buy in small quantities for maximum flavour. Using extra virgin olive oil for frying Extra virgin olive oil has a lower smoke point than other types of oil so while this high-grade stuff tastes great drizzled over salad or mozzarella, it’s useless and even dangerous for shallowfrying steak or deep-frying chips. For these, try oils with a higher burn point, like vegetable or sunflower oil. Not resting meat before serving Searing a pork or lamb chop adds lots of flavour but it also tenses the meat. For the best results, remove your meat from the pan or the oven once cooked, loosely cover it with tin foil and let it rest for about 10 minutes. In that time the meat will relax and the juices will redistribute evenly. It will also prevent medium steaks from bleeding out on the plate when sliced.

Royal British Legion 2020 Poppy Appeal The Poppy Appeal is steeped in history and originally evolved to support veterans from the First and Second World War. Today the appeal unites faiths, cultures and backgrounds to support members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families. Every poppy sold makes a difference to people’s lives and the RBL is calling on the public to support this year’s campaign like never before, because every poppy counts. As mentioned, contributions from the local community allow the Royal British Legion to provide much-needed support to a wide range of veterans and families in need right here in Spain.

The Royal British Legion has launched its annual Poppy Appeal and in Spain, it was Benidorm that once again hosted the event. However, owing to current restrictions, instead of the usual Parade of Standards and speeches along Levante Promenade, it was marked by holding a much shorter ceremony behind closed doors. The global pandemic has seen The Royal British Legion here in Spain even busier than ever supporting veterans and their families who find themselves in need and the Poppy Appeal is the charities biggest fundraising initiative. The money donated, either throughout the year or during the current appeal and Remembrance period, is vital to that effort with everything raised in Spain actually spent in Spain caring for the

many veterans, so please continue contributing to the Poppy Appeal wherever and however you can. In a short Act of Remembrance held in the Oscar Esplá Amphitheatre, wreaths were laid by: Brigadier Lisa Keetley, the senior Army officer in Spain, currently serving in the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Headquarters in Valencia, Mrs Sara Munsterhjelm, British Vice Consul in Alicante and Mr Jim Thomson, Chairman of Benidorm Branch of The Royal British Legion, Don Antonio Pérez, Mayor of Benidorm and Mr Don Cubbon, Chairman of District North Spain of The Royal British Legion. The bugler was Alwyn Pollendine of The Royal British Legion Band, Spain and the Piper was Donald Mark of the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums.

So, please make your donation and wear your poppy with pride in the knowledge that you will be supporting past and present members of the Armed Forces community. Like so many things this year, the Poppy Appeal has had to adapt due to the threat of Covid. Therefore, the RBL has unveiled a range of new ways for people to show their support remotely. From donating for poppies through the post for your neighbours and local community, displaying a poppy in your window, donating online or undertaking a virtual Poppy run, there are many new ways to support the Poppy Appeal. This year a Go Fund Me page has been opened for the Poppy Appeal which can be found at https://es.gofundme.com/f/poppyappeal-district-north-spain. Every cent or

euro you can spare really counts and makes a huge difference to the lives of veterans, both old and young here in Spain, and their families, so thank you once again for your generosity in supporting them through the Poppy Appeal 2020.

You can find details of how to contact the Royal British Legion on the website: http://counties.britishlegion.org.uk/cou nties/spain-north, where you'll also find details of how they may be able to help you if you need any support.

Local restaurants call Orange for earlybird diners chocolate Living in Spain means getting so used to eating late at night that, wherever else you travel in the world, restaurants seem to shut too early – and holidaymakers on Spanish soil quickly learn not to get hungry before at least 8pm in the evening. But the temporary 'curfew' across the country, with everyone having to be indoors by midnight or, in some regions, as early as 10pm, means the usual dead-of-night dining is off the agenda. Eateries throughout Spain are worried this will mean a drop in custom, except for those based in cosmopolitan areas with an international clientèle who turn up for their meals out at 7pm or 8pm, or even as early as 6pm. So they have started a nationwide campaign urging Spaniards – and long-term expats who have got used to national habits – to 'dine like they do in Europe'. The association Hostelería de España ('Spain Hotel and Catering') wants people to carry on eating out in the evening, but to start earlier – typically at 8pm rather than the usual 9pm or 10pm. This is especially aimed to help keep restaurants open in regions such as ours, the Comunidad Valenciana, where the 'curfew' starts at midnight and where literally hundreds of nationalities all live together in the same communities.

About 270,000 restaurants throughout the country have joined the 'Go European' campaign and are brandishing the hashtags #AdelantaTuCena ('bring your evening meal forward') and #SalvemosLaHosteleria ('Save the Restaurant Industry'), with a logo featuring a plate-cover bearing the time of 8pm.

Owners disinfect the premises and all fixtures regularly, including tables and chairs between each set of customers; group numbers are limited to six people; tables are set at least two metres apart; anyone entering is required to make use of the handsanitiser dispensers at the door, and masks must be worn when not physically eating or drinking.

Restaurants are already limited at present, with only 50 percent of the usual number allowed inside and 60 percent in outside seating areas, meaning eateries in colder regions will struggle more; those on the Mediterranean and south coasts and on the islands, however, will do more trade, since it is still not too cold in the evenings to dine outdoors comfortably with a coat on. In fact, in these parts of the country, it is rarely, if ever, too cold to dine outside as long as you 'dress for the temperature'.

Ventilation has been improved, as have the already-high standards of hygiene and safety, and staff have been trained to ensure their practices are 'Covid safe'.

One of the biggest contributors to the national economy, supporting restaurants and bars is crucial at any time of the year, and their owners are taking every possible step to adapt to the new 'climate'. They want to make sure customers are safe and, equally as important, feel safe, since doing so means eateries are more likely to be able to stay open.

Restaurateurs say eating out is, therefore, probably safer for families and groups of friends than doing so in private homes – when in someone's house, especially your own, you are less likely to keep to social-distancing and mask-wearing precautions, but in a restaurant, you are obliged to do so as per the 'rules' of the establishment, they say. Most eateries who did so during lockdown are still offering takeaway services or home deliveries for those who are reluctant to leave their houses for non-essential activities, but they are only able to do so until 'curfew hour' at present.

gin is perfect for Christmas

Lildl has just bought a smile to our faces by announcing it has launched a range of gins that will make for a very fun festive season. As part of the supermarket's winter-themed Spirits Festival, there are a load of delicious gins on offer, including a Terry's Chocolate Orange-inspired gin! The Brecon Chocolate Orange Gin boasts flavours of "powdery cocoa and silky vanilla with bursts of sweet orange and an unmistakably full-bodied juniper". Lidl suggests serving it topped with tonic and garnished with cinnamon and orange for a unique take on a classic. Or, just think of the delicious negronis you can make with this. Another highlight of the range includes the Anno Spiced Cranberry Gin, which features notes of cranberry, zesty oranges, spicy cloves and cassia. It pairs well with apple juice or tonic, according to Lidl. And fans of a refreshing, fruity gin will also love the Harborough Spirits Company Pear Drop Gin; a specially distilled gin with strong notes of pear and a subtle juniper finish served best with tonic or as the perfect addition to Prosecco. Available in stores from 3rd November, Lidl's latest Spirits Festival range includes 12 premium craft spirits from distilleries across Scotland, England and Wales, with prices starting at £17.99 and then popular items from the range will then be rolled out across Europe.

Menopause weight gain Along with hair loss, weight gain is one of the more unwelcome symptoms of menopause. Reasons why women gain weight during menopause include hormonal and behavioural changes, which can occur as a result of the other symptoms of menopause. Oestrogen is known to have an impact on both metabolism and weight, so the changing levels during perimenopause can contribute to weight gain. This can be made worse by the brain fog, joint aches or fatigue you may experience as well which, understandably, can change your exercise or eating patterns. As with many things medically, by knowing more about what your body is going through, you are able to make some positive changes which can make a real difference. Lifestyle changes – such as exercising regularly – can have a really positive impact on both your weight and how you feel in your body. It's completely normal to feel out of sorts with yourself during menopause with so much change happening hormonally, and the raft of symptoms which can come along with this. Finding an exercise regime which brings you joy, and gets you moving, can make a real difference to your day to day, not

only for your body but your mind, too. Keeping yourself active is key during menopause, but finding something you enjoy is even better – be that cold water swimming, yoga or a dance class on Zoom. This will not only help manage your weight, but also help you feel stronger in your body. Furthermore, as women going through menopause are at increased risk of osteoporosis (again due to that dropping oestrogen) exercising regularly will help maintain your joint and bone health. Managing stress and diet during menopause can also help manage weight changes which happen at this time. When you are stressed, your body produces an inflammatory hormone called Cortisol. You may also find the way you eat changes when you’re stressed – maybe reaching for more caffeine or sugary foods to

give you a quick hit of energy. It is important to consider how stressed you feel. Plus, what works for you to keep your stress levels down. Making this a priority can also help control weight changes which occur at this time – and keep your mind healthy at the same time, too. If you are finding that, despite these changes, your weight is getting you down or other symptoms, such as painful joints, are stopping you doing what you want to do, I would recommend booking in for a chat with your GP. They will always be happy to talk to you about the symptoms you are experiencing and discuss options for management – including HRT or referrals to Social Prescribers who can help support you with weight loss.

Habits that are aging you Are you aging faster than your years? If you don't like what you see in the mirror, it may be time to evaluate some of your daily routines. The foods you eat and even the way you sleep can add years to your face and may shorten your lifespan... You multitask If your to-do list never seems to get any shorter, the stress from your hectic life may be taxing your body. People think multitasking is good, but you don't actually get anything done - you just create more stress. Several studies show that chronic stress triggers the release of free radicals, the unstable molecules that damage cells and are responsible for aging. Instead of trying to do it all, concentrate on one task at a time and only moving on once you finish it. You rarely pass up dessert Aside from adding excess pounds to your body, your sweet tooth may also be adding years to your face. Internally, sugar molecules attach themselves to protein fibres in each of our cells. This damaging process, known

as glycation, can result in a loss of radiance, dark circles under the eyes, loss of tone, puffiness, an increase in fine lines and wrinkles and a loss of facial contours and increased pore size. Pass on the sugary treats if you want to preserve your youthful glow.

You get by on fewer than five hours sleep a night Skimping on sleep not only results in dark bags under the eyes - it has also been linked to a shorter lifespan. Sleeping within the seven-hour range is optimal. Get to bed earlier if you have the symptoms of sleep deprivation, which include a lack of daytime energy, mental sluggishness, attention problems, or weight gain

You spend most of the day sitting The dangers of a sedentary lifestyle are well-documented: People who spend most of their days parked in a chair are at increased risk for kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, not to mention obesity. Naturally, exercising regularly helps to prevent these health issues and keeps you living longer, according to a study from the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Study participants who exercised 150 minutes or more a week lived 10 to 13 years longer than the inactive bunch. You cut out all fat from your diet Some fat is necessary for maintaining a youthful feeling and appearance. Hearthealthy omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish (such as salmon and mackerel) and certain nuts (such as walnuts and flax seeds) keep skin supple and plump, thereby preventing wrinkles, and they boost both heart and brain health as well. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends including fish in your meals at least twice a week.

My marriage has left me unfulfilled. We have been married for 25 years, but for the past 20 my wife has refused to sleep together. We don't even sleep in the same bed. I've done everything I can possibly think of to try and make her happy. I took her on a once in a lifetime cruise, spending nearly all our savings and not even this made her happy. I have made an effort to be romantic but to no avail. I have tried to talk to her, I suggested counselling but ended up going on my own. We did not have children because she did not want a family, and I went along with it. At the time I thought I'd be ok about it, but I find myself looking at other guys' lives and feeling sad and envious of what they've got. My house is ruled by my wife; everything from what we watch on the television to what we eat, to what colour we paint the walls - she won't let me have my say on anything. Quite often she won't talk to me if I don't give in to her. Recently we had to change the car and she stated she wanted a certain type, colour and when I said we should get something more practical, she shouted and screamed at me. I am miserable and at the end of my tether. My family have told me for years that I should leave her. My normal reply to a letter such as this would be to seek counselling, but you have tried everything and been extremely tolerant. Sadly, I think that you may need to think about leaving your marriage for your own sake. You have tried so hard for so long, but staying is making you desperately unhappy. You still have time to meet someone with whom you could have a loving relationship. You are young enough to start again and meet someone new to share your life with. Start by talking things through with your family, who saw chinks in your relationship many years ago.

White flecks on your nails aren’t actually calcium deficiency Whether it’s mid manicure or when you’re tapping away on your keyboard, you may well have noticed white spots on your nails. If as a result, you’ve chowed down on a bag of kale or upped your diary intake in a bid to boost your calcium levels, then sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it won’t have made much of a difference because those milky white flecks are not necessarily indicative of a deficiency. Our nails are usually pink in colour with a lighter crescent at the bottom. Sometimes white spots appear on the nails. The medical name for these is punctuate leukonychia and there are several types. White spots on your fingernails usually indicate nail bed damage. You will often find people who bite their nails have white marks on the nail as it is a sign of trauma, a.k.a leukonychia. This word comes from the Greek for white (leuko) and nail (onyx). According to the NHS, 'frequent manicures and pedicures can also damage the nail beds.' White spots on nails can be caused by a deficiency in certain minerals and/or vitamins. The deficiencies most commonly linked to this are zinc and calcium however these tend to be rare. Less common causes include heart disease, kidney failure, psoriasis or

provides less protection to the nail bed. A lot of people talk about white spots on the nails showing an underlying health problem, often related to a deficiency of calcium levels.

eczema, pneumonia. The different types of white spots may indicate what caused them. For example, an injury may cause a large white spot in the middle of the nail. An allergic reaction could be lots of dots on the nail. Some forms of poisoning or medication can also cause leukonychia. This cause is rare and often results in transverse leukonychia. If they are infrequent white spots and related to an injury to the nail, there’s no need to see a doctor. However, if the spots are persistent or getting worse it’s advisable to seek medical advice. Aside from nail biting, leukonychia is often caused by minor, unnoticed trauma such as knocking a finger against the door and these spots are more likely to occur if the nails are thin as the nail

But it's not that clean cut. While it’s the trauma that causes the spots to actually appear, if your nails are weak, as a result of your diet, then you will be more susceptible. It’s always a good idea to eat foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids as these will provide nourishment for the nail bed. Protein is also essential with every meal for strong, healthy nail growth. Think: zinc-rich foods like pumpkin seeds, green and leafy veg like spinach, roots like carrots, plus plenty of lentils, beans, and nuts, for protein.

The Risks of Older Vehicles As technology advances, so do the safety features of our vehicles. The near future may well see autonomous vehicles on the roads, but they will still have to mix with cars of today, and yesterday, for some time yet. Sadly, the risk of death or serious injury is multiplied by two when comparing incidents that occur with vehicles 10 to 15 years old, in relation to vehicles less than 5 years old, which is why the proper maintenance of all safety elements becomes an essential activity. The correct maintenance of a vehicle contributes decisively to ensure adequate safety conditions throughout its useful life. These safety conditions are periodically verified in the technical inspections (ITV). In the last campaign it

was discovered that 1.64% of the vehicles on the road don´t have a valid ITV.

Other elements: In addition to lights and tyres, the following elements are also checked and should be monitored closely:

Tyres: The tyres are the only surface of the vehicle in contact with the road. They are responsible for ensuring adhesion in acceleration, braking and lateral sliding. They also ensure that the direction of travel of the vehicle is as desired by the driver and the damping of road imperfections. It is recommended that the groove depth be at least 3 millimetres, although the legal minimum is 1.6 millimetres. Approximately more than a million vehicles, 5% of vehicles on the road, have serious defects with the wheels, mainly because they have a depth

below the legal minimum of 1.6 mm, have irregular wear due to bad suspension or incorrect alignment, or incorrect pressure. In addition, vehicles related to professional use such as vans have higher rates of tyre defects. It is also necessary to regularly check the cold tyre pressure, including the spare wheel, as well as check for possible air leaks from the valves. The cap of the same constitutes an element of tightness, so its use is essential. Lighting: The purpose of vehicle lights is not only to see, but also to be seen, since each vehicle is, in practice, an obstacle for others, so the definition of its presence

is also significant. So that driving is carried out in safe conditions, it is advisable to pay special attention to the use, maintenance and regulation of the headlights, to get, on the one hand, sufficient light and, on the other, not to dazzle those who are also driving on public roads. Bulbs reduce their intensity with use, so they must be changed every 40,000 km. or 2 years.

The number plates: The driver must verify that the number plates of the vehicle do not present obstacles that impede or hinder their reading and identification and are not damaged or tampered with. Carrying the illegible registration number is a serious infraction with a sanction of 200 euro but manipulating the registration plate to try to evade traffic laws can lead to a fine of 6,000 euro and the loss of 6 points. Windscreen: The driver must verify that the windscreen does not present any damage, since it is a fundamental part in the structural resistance of the vehicle, in the efficiency of the airbag and in the support of cameras and sensors of driving assistance devices. The documentation of the vehicle that must be carried, in addition to the mandatory driving licence is:

The bulbs must be changed in pairs, because their use is symmetrical in most cases.

Vehicle logbook, which contains the technical data of the vehicle and the data of its owner (or an authorisation from the Traffic Department).

It is necessary to always keep the lights clean.

ITV card and corresponding sticker, visible on the front windscreen.

Tyre Load Capacity As well as the basics of trye safety, it´s also important to know some of the elements and details of vehicle tyres and the importance of what they mean. Knowing how to read a tyre forms part of the driving test in Spain, which is testament to how important the DGT feel the subject is. We have already said that they are arguably most the amongst important elements of a vehicle, and often the most abused, but sadly, they are often the most neglected. It is important that the vehicle´s tyres are of a high quality, not least because of the wear and tear they suffer, investing that little bit more in a tyre could make the difference between life and death. We have already detailed what the figures around the tyre mean but we will go over them briefly again as a reminder. If you look at the side of the tyre you will see a sequence which looks something like this sample, “195 / 55 R 16 87V”. Here, “195” refers to 195 millimetres, the nominal section width of the tyre. “55” is 55%, the aspect ratio, representing the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the nominal section width, i.e., in our case, 55% of 195mm. “R” stands for radial construction. “16” is the diameter of the tyre´s inner rim, this time

increases the risk of a “blow out”, which in turn could have fatal consequences.

in inches. “87” is the load capacity of the tyre. “V” indicates the maximum permitted speed. There is also the stamp indicating the week number and the year of manufacture. We want to look specifically at the load capacity of the tyre this time. As the summer holiday season starts, it is quite common for the family car to be loaded up for a long journey cross country, perhaps even across the continent, and the amount of cargo, as well as passengers, often increases compared to our normal daily commute. That is why we have to ensure that the load capacity of the tyre can handle the extra weight we place in the vehicle. Overloaded vehicles quite literally weigh down on the tyres which can increase the risk of uneven wear and the dangers that poses, but also hugely

Sadly, for the average driver, they don´t make it too simple for us to immediately see what the load capacity is, as the number in the code needs to be converted to a weight. In our example, 87V, the tyres can carry a maximum load of 545 kilograms. Keep in mind though, this is the total maximum weight of the vehicle. It also shows why it is important that all the tyres on the vehicle match, as if they are different, the load capacity may be lower.

In our example, the letter “V” refers to a maximum speed of 240 kilometres per hour, but speed limits must be maintained by the road and conditions, rather than the maximum that the tyres can endure.

Central government hinders widening of N332 The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón this week expressed his surprise and indignation that in the projection of the General State Budgets for the 2022, 2023 and 2024 not a single euro is included for the execution of the project to widen the N332 in Torrevieja. The 2021 General State Budget Project, which was presented with great fanfare by the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and vice-president, Pablo Iglesias, one budget item of €100,000 was included for the drafting of the project for making the stretch of road dual carriage, while in the projection for the years 2022, 2023 and 2024, not a single euro is included for bringing that project from plan to reality. The mayor expressed surprise and anger at the lack of multi-year

investment for the actual execution of the project, which he considers shows the indifference of the Government of Spain to Torrevieja and the people of Torrevieja. In a statement this week, Eduardo Dolón said that it is not acceptable that the Ministry of Development includes only €100,000 for Torrevieja within the section of "Replacement investment in infrastructure and goods for general use", especially considering that more than a year has passed since he met in Madrid with the Minister of Public Works, José Luis Ábalos, mainly to try to speed up this very important matter for the city of Torrevieja. Likewise, the mayor confirmed that since the meeting a year ago with Minister Ábalos, there have been

One budgetary item allocated to drafting the plans for the dual carriageway

numerous requests for information and requests to hold an official meeting with the Secretary General for Infrastructure, without having received any response at all so far. Eduardo Dolón ended his statement by saying that now he understands what is going on and it is clear why he has been ignored all this time by those responsible at the Ministry. The mayor considers that solving the traffic delays on the stretch of N332 as it passes through Torrevieja as one of the most urgent matters of the town. He urged local political leaders of the PSOE and Los Verdes to come out and support this necessary infrastructure investment, one he considers as having been ‘struck down’ by the Government of Spain.

Elche CF Lose to the Boys in Green and White Elche CF played their 6th game of the 2020/21 season this weekend starting in 7th position, whilst their opponents, Real Betis played their 8th game starting in 11th position with 9 points. Elche are a couple of games behind because of their exceedingly long promotional battle which would have meant a summer break of just 2 weeks. The most recent head to head results are in Elche's favour, with them winning 3 and drawing 1 of the last 4 games. Having flown to Seville on Saturday night, Elche CF started nervously in their away kit of red and blue. Betis, playing in white and green, tactics were clear, use the flanks. After just 7 minutes this provided the first goal of the game as the 24 year old Paraguay Sanabria slotted in a shot. It seems that Manuel Pellegrini, the Betis manager, had discovered a weakness in Elche CF's defence, which his team

continued to exploit. The stats reflect the game, at the quarter hour mark, Betis had 7 shots on goal to Elche's 0, with the home side having 65% possession. Just before the half hour Betis' Cristian Tello received the ball in an almost off side position and with a late change of shooting. foot, fooled Edgar, putting the ball between the goalies legs. Elche CF made their first attack moves of the game on 40 minutes, but to no avail. As half time approached Elche's Marcone gave away a penalty. Fekir's attempt was saved by the sure hands of Edgar as the ball was partly passing the line, but the ref still had to call upon VAR to clarify the save. Elche CF started the second half much more positively and with more possession. But it

didn't last long as Tello scored his second goal of the match at 56 minutes. Just 4 minutes later, Elche responded with a cracking goal from Josan. He received the ball on the run and guided it into the bottom left corner. Almiron made a triple substitution on 73 minutes, which made little difference, and so Elche experienced their second loss after returning to La Liga. Elche CF's next challenge will be home against Galician based Celta Vigo on Friday the 6th November at 21:00. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. Las Ramblas Golf Society There were some moments of high drama together with light heartedness as we kicked off the 1st round of this year’s Pairs Match Play Knockout. Bryan Neal and his playing partner Hendrick Oldenziel had to play the 18th hole no less than four times before finally overcoming Liz Robertson and Mike Mahony! Whilst that was going on Marja Oldenziel was giving a pretty good demonstration on how to putt whilst forgetting she still had her ball in her pocket! Although Trevor Pullyblank and Joyce McClusky went out to Reg Akehurst and Nigel Price 3&2, Joyce kindly provided the beers after her ‘hole in one’ on the 6th. Mark Western and Marleen Billen were looking in good shape after knocking out Graham Murray and Anne Marie Weisheit 4&3 as were Lindsay Forbes and myself after our 6&5 win over Alan Douglas and Mike Brentnall. We’ll be up against the Scottish duo of Tom Hardie and Ken Robertson after they overcame John Shervell and Mike Chapman in a closely fought match 2&1. Pulse rates were racing (which is probably not a good idea for most of our members) when it

Marja Oldenziel

came to quarter final day. This time it was Paul Brown’s and Petina Murray’s turn (against Reg and Nigel) to have to play the 18th four times before a result was reached. Having been 5 down at the turn Reg and Nigel finished victorious and will face Dave Pulling and Friedel Knebel (who went through on a bye) in the next round. Lindsay and I managed to beat ‘The Proclaimers’ Tom and Ken 4&3 to book our place in Friday’s semifinal against Mark and Marleen who knocked out Bryan and

Hendrick 3&2. In a closely fought contest myself and Lindsay overcame Mark and Marleen 3&2 and will find ourselves, in next Friday’s final, up against Nigel and Reg (the man to watch) who saw off Dave and Friedel 5&4. With a nett score of 60.3 it was Ken & Liz Rbertson together with Graham Murray and Pete Dunn who cleaned up in the ‘Texas Scramble’ played by all our other members. Pues hasta la semana que viene, Peter Reffell

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT â– CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Bingo! I think I have sussed it, folks. I am on to the powers that be at Manchester United and I can exclusively reveal the real reason they have not won any of their first four Premier League matches at Old Trafford this season. It is all part of an elaborate ruse to make United's backing of this European Super League easier to stomach - 'look, we clearly cannot be bothered doing well in domestic football - but look at how good we are in Europe!' Those that watched United defeat PSG (again) in Paris and then Leipzig at home during the week were pointing with long fingers at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer declaring, 'I told you he has a plan. Did you see how good we were? Did you, did you?' Yet, PSG approached that game with the contempt Sir Alex Ferguson used to reserve for 'lads, it's Spurs' and Leipzig's tactical approach suggested they'd never watched United play football before - leaving wide open spaces in midfield and in behind for the likes of Marcus Rashford to gallop gleefully into.

display coming up in the next seven days but that does not make it any less valid. And Roy continued post-match too, getting overly worked-up over Arsenal players calling their manager by his first name. Come on Roy, pick your battles. Bruno Fernandes felt compelled to come out in public and reassure people that Brogba is not a broken relationship, that they are working hard on finding common ground and that the counselling sessions are going well. Yet, when the pressure was on against the Gunners, they looked less together than the married couple moaning about their spouse in different rooms at a dinner party. Thomas Partey said ahead of the match that he wants to 'attack like Yaya and defend like Essien'. In fairness, he could have attacked like Carlton Palmer and defended like David Luiz and still been the best midfielder on show. Pogba carelessly gave away the penalty, duly slotted by Yo-Pierre, and the Gunners have their first Old Trafford three-point haul in 14 years. In fairness to Pogba, he did call himself 'stupid' having given away the penalty and OGS merely waved it away with 'these things happen'. Penalties against United? Not that often, actually Ole.

Well, is it ever? Either way, it was given and West Ham's dream of getting at least a point at Anfield went down the drain as quickly as Salah hit the deck. The real highlight of the match was the three minute period where the commentary team seemed utterly incapable of realising that the reason Diogo Jota's first goal was disallowed was that Sadio Mane had almost taken Lukas Fabianski's head off. Given the fact that the VAR screen was stating that they were checking for a possible foul, it was a little odd to hear them refute the chances of it being offside. Who needs to spend big money on defenders when you can find a random 23-year-old kicking around on the training ground, eh Jurgen? King Klopp praised his modern-day equivalent to dragging a Sunday League player out of the pub by calling Nat Phillips, 'not exactly Messi but a monster in the air'. Mind you, given his complete no-show, you get the feeling a Sunday League player dragged out of the pub would have been able to put Sebastian Haller in their pocket too.

Lamps called it a 'complete performance' - which might be overstating it a touch given how terrible Dyche's team have been this campaign. Down at Tottenham, I found myself questioning Graham Potter's wizardry once more. Brighton travelled to face a Spurs side incapable of keeping a clean sheet and Potter, in his wisdom, elected to play without a striker. And I don't mean he started with Danny Welbeck, either. Tottenham's striker, Harry Kane, used all his 'cleverness' to invite Adam Lallana into giving away a penalty - given by VAR once it was decided the foul took place in the area. Naturally, Kane scored yet this was not the last we would see of video refereeing in this one. Firstly, credit to Graham Scott for going over to the monitor to check his original decision. Secondly, even more credit to Graham Scott for watching the video back about 15 times and, even with clear video evidence suggesting he got it completely wrong the first time around, backing his original decision

Here's a worrying fact for the Liverpool fans - the champions have conceded more goals than anyone else in the whole Premier League since they finally lifted the title last season. Yeah, even more Fulham.

None of that from Mikel Arteta, none of that at all. Had that Arsenal performance been back in the heyday of when this fixture had something more than a duel between two likely-Europa Leaguequalification contenders riding on it, we'd have purred at Wenger's ability to kill his main rivals in their own back yard. So, maybe we should treat it with the same respect even if it will matter little in the bigger picture come the end of the season? Or maybe we could just call a spade a spade and call the game out as only marginally less awful to watch than when Chelsea rocked up in the rain last weekend? Yeah, let's go with that. Roy Keane was in full Halloween mode before kick-off, accusing Paul Pogba of 'disrespecting' United and 'rocking the boat' with his mere presence. Before the game started, you could have easily just raised an eyebrow and written it off as Roy being Roy but by the final whistle? Keano has it nailed on, once again. Sure, the delivery of his point was more fiery than any socially distanced fireworks

David Moyes will have sent his West Ham side out with the clear instructions of 'and whatever you do, don't touch that Mohamed Salah in the area!' and we can only assume that Arthur Masuaku was in the toilet cubicle when this was being made clear. Moyseh was raging at what he perceived to be yet another Salah diving special, but given that we live in 2020 it was hard to see what he was upset about as Salah clearly did his ankle tickled by West Ham's left-back. Was it enough for Salah to go down?

Kyle Walker chose not to celebrate his thundering winner for Man City against Sheffield United because he was worried about what people might think. I'm guessing he's had a change of outlook in life since lockdown MK1, then. After seeing Frank Lampard's Chelsea take them to the cleaners at Turf Moor, Burnley manager Sean Dyche complained of being 'confused' about penalties this season. It's very simple, really Sean. Big teams still get them and little teams don't - even in this VAR age. It's safe to say that Hakim Ziyech has passed the modern-day footballing test as well. Ziyech came through the classic 'can he do it on a freezing cold Saturday afternoon in gale force winds against Burnley' test with a resounding 'yes' next to his name.

and allowing Brighton's equaliser. That takes some real self-confidence, I applaud you.

Certainly not the Everton fans who genuinely believed they were in a title race for all of five minutes this season.

Fortunately for Gareth Bale, he managed to come off the bench in this one and help Spurs win rather than throw it away again, ala West Ham and Antwerp. Bale has his first goal back in a Tottenham shirt, left as alone in the box as he felt in Madrid as he headed home Reguillon's cross for the winner.

Maybe, just maybe, the stuff Richarlison does for them when he isn't rolling around on the floor is of some use because without him in the team (and no J-Rod either) Everton were stunningly bad against a standardlycautious Newcastle United team at St James' Park.

You know what they say - 4-0 is never a safe lead. And Aston Villa came closer than anyone expected to saving face at home to Southampton on Sunday.

Of course, DLC scored when he was finally given the ball in the Newcastle area but by then it was too late - Callum Wilson had already conned himself a penalty and then shinned one in from half-a-yard. Just in case you were still in any doubt, Everton will not be winning the Premier League this season and, I would venture, might end up nearer the relegation battle than the race of the European spots. I had to spend some time trying to recall what Friday night's match was and that in itself tells you all you really need to know about Wolves beating Crystal Palace 2-0.

James Ward-Prowse managed something David Beckham never did two goals from free-kicks in the first half of a Premier League match. Danny Ings scored a cracker, obviously, before Villa remembered to 'give the ball to Jack, he'll sort it out'. Except, he didn't. I mean, he nearly did. But he didn't, ultimately. Since smashing Liverpool for seven Villa have been predictably pointless. Who could have predicted that?
