Vega Baja ‘under control’ despite increase in positives See Main Advert on page 26-27

According to the latest figures, cases in the Alicante province so far in the second wave of infection are already four times those of the first wave. Between March and April, 3,707 positives were registered, while from September to date there are close to 17,000 infections.

Management at Vega Baja hospital have said that the situation is under control despite the recent increase. Orihuela Health Department is one of the most severely affected departments in the entire Valencian community according to Miguel Fayos, manager of Vega Baja Hospital. The growing number of positive cases over the last month is reflected in the increase of patients who need intensive care. According to the Fayos, “Events have forced us to implement the Contingency Plan on which we have been working exhaustively since the beginning of the pandemic. It consists of setting up new areas for the care of covid patients, both in ICUs, emergencies and hospitalization units”. Hospital management are also focusing on the provision of PPE and respirators to deal with the second wave. Unions have criticised the Ministry of Health for lack of human resources, both

in terms of health professionals and support workers. One union, the CSIF, said that latest figures for Vega Baja hospital showed 16 patients in ICU – the ward itself and the resuscitation ward being full with Covid-19 patients. The union said that operating rooms were being transformed into ICUs to facilitate non covid related admissions. Covid patients who do not need intensive care, numbering more than 50, are distributed among Pulmonology, Neurology and Cardiology wards. Workers themselves claim to be at breaking point, and utterly exhausted. Those declared the heroes of the first wave of the infection are now saying that the second wave is going to take its toll on them psychologically and have demanded a more effective contingency plan to avoid having to be in contact with the virus every day. Hospital workers claim that now, in Continued on page 3

Movember We're all familiar with what happens each year as the weather cools: radio stations start playing holiday tunes and moustaches appear on upper lips. You're probably familiar with this yearly occurrence known as Movember. You may have thought that Movember was just a silly, quirky thing people did for fun, or one of these ‘themed months’ - but all those moustaches, beards, goatees and tufts are actually grown out for a cause. Movember is a charitable cause supported by an official organisation dedicated to raising awareness about men's health issues and raises a substantial amount of money each year. While the campaign supports the bold embracement of body hair and charitably support men's health it is a separate initiative to ‘No-Shave November’, which we’ll also take a quick look at. What is Movember? Movember combines the words "moustache" and "November." What started as a fun experiment turned into a full-fledged charitable organisation that supports various men's health initiatives, including prostate and colon cancer research, mental health and suicide prevention, parenting and general health. According to the official Movember

website, Movember began in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003 when two friends met up for drinks and thought up the idea and created the legacy Movember is today. They recruited 28 other men in Australia who agreed to grow out their moustaches. At this point, there was no express intent to raise money for charities, but that quickly changed. By 2006, Movember received official charity status from Australia and raised more than $8 million since its inception three years prior. The movement continued to grow, and by 2017, more than 5 million people from 21 countries officially participated and donated. The movement is still going strong, even if the novelty of November moustaches seems to have worn off. Participating in either Movember is simple and easy. If you want to fully participate in Movember, register to be counted among the millions that grow out their moustaches for a good cause. Then, you can choose how to participate: 1. You can simply grow your mustache and use it as a talking point to start important conversations about men's health. 2. Participate in "Move for Movember," during which you'll commit to walking or running 60 miles over the course of the month. The number 60

represents the 60 men's lives lost to suicide every hour across the world. 3. You can host a "MoMent," or an event to raise awareness about men's health...within Covid safety guidelines of course. 4. You could donate the money they'd normally spend on grooming supplies, such as razor blades and shaving cream, to one of the organisation's funded programs. People who participate in No-Shave November don't shave anything, letting any and all facial hair (and sometimes body hair) grow out. However, you're welcome to trim and groom if you have a strict dress code at work, the rules say. No-Shave November feels more inclusive for females, who may not have facial hair to put on display, but who can certainly grow out their leg and armpit hair. No-Shave November is a bit more laissez-faire about the rules than Movember, which wants people to start the month completely clean-shaven and grow only a mustache. Fun moustache facts... To commemorate

this

year’s

Movember here’s a much-needed chuckle and hopefully some inspiration to join in this year’s fun and continue to raise awareness... 1. The longest known moustache is 14 feet long and belongs to Ram Singh Chauhan, according to Guinness World Records. Chauhan began growing out his moustache in 1982 and was awarded the world record in 2010. Wonder how long it is now? 2. Facial hair is built-in sun protection. One study found that a beard can prevent a man's risk of UV damage to the skin underneath by up to a whopping 95 percent, depending on

how thick the beard is. 3. There is such a thing as The World Beard and Moustache Championships. It's held every two years in locations all around the world. 4. American actor Burt Reynolds passed away in 2018, but a Facebook page dedicated to his legendary moustache still has more than 3,000 fans. 5. "Pogonotomy" sounds like a weird torture or a strange hobby, but it just means "the cutting of beards; shaving," according to the dictionary. And it's something you can do on 1st Dec 2020.

Continued from page 1 Vega Baja’s covid wards, two patients are installed per room to save space. Meanwhile, hospital orderlies have asked for ‘closed services’ during their shifts, claiming that they cannot be “transporting covid patients in ICU and later, taking a woman to delivery or being in oncology.” At the moment, workers say there simply isn’t enough staff. Hospital manager Miguel Fayos, is more optimistic. He assures that Vega Baja has sufficient capacity to continue serving the population, and calls for calm.

CostaBlancaPeople 10th - 16th November 2020

In terms of staff shortages, he said that since March, 258 reinforcement staff were hired – both health and non health personnel – and that they have requested a further increase in professional staff. Meanwhile, in Albatera, six workers at the Health Centre have tested positive for Covid-19. Workers began to feel symptoms on Friday and have all undergone rapid testing – being healthworkers, they only had to wait 12 hours for a result. Officials in Albatera have called for calm and have assured that the workers would have undertaken all hygiene protocols at all times and that

Crackdown on contract fraud in 2021 The Government wants to investigate 470,000 employment contracts next year and convert 80,000 fraudulent temporary contracts into permanent status through a new initiative with the aim of controlling labour fraud. The work will be undertaken by the Autonomous State Agency for Labour and Social Security Inspection, which for the first time in its history has its own budget, valued at 175.8 million euros. The initiative was announced at the recent Congress of Deputies by the Secretary of State for Employment, Joaquín Pérez Rey. The Labour and Social Security inspectorate, like most government departments, saw its activity during 2020 affected by the pandemic. Workers carried out more than 100,000 inspections relating to the temporary employment payment (ERTE) and unemployment pay. The department also carried out 116,189 inspections to control the protection of workers against the risk of contagion by COVID-19, 30,813 reports on ERTE and 2,876 inspections on the labour rights of workers linked to the pandemic.

In general, inspections during 2020 were hampered by the decrease in economic activity caused by the pandemic, the declaration of a state of alarm and the closure of companies due to ERTE, making it impossible for companies to properly comply with inspections. Looking forward, one of the main objectives of the Labor and Social Security Inspectorate for 2021 is to reduce fraud in part-time contracts, for which it plans to investigate 450,000 employee working situations. The Inspectorate also wants to guarantee equality between women and men in the workplace, and will create a State Office for the Fight against Discrimination and increase checks on working time, compliance with wage regulations and potential gender discrimination. Part of the budget includes a crackdown on false self-employed workers and inspectors also plan to carry out 87,000 visits to workplaces to assess risk prevention and workplace accidents.

the health centre building itself undergoes regular sanitising. Reports on Saturday indicated 20 positive cases at Casa Verde care home in Almoradí. Patients will be treated at Almoradí health centre and Vega Baja hospital and new admissions to the care home have been put on hold. Casa Verde declined to make a statement to the press, claiming that they must be "respectful" of clients and their families "to protect them." The incidence of coronavirus in Almoradí is one of the highest in the entire Valencian Community with 471 cases per one hundred thousand inhabitants. One hundred positive cases have been registered there in the last 14 days, not including those at Casa Verde. The Valencian Community saw some tighter restrictions introduced at midnight on Friday with the towns of Elda and Petrer closed off due to high infection rates. Bars and restaurants have had the good news that they do not have to close, but will see the interior capacity reduced to a third and terraces to half. Capacity in shops is reduced to a half and communal areas in commercial centres cannot be used.

Police save English woman from suicide jump Officers from the Local Police of Orihuela Costa have prevented a woman from throwing herself from a bridge. The woman had intended to commit suicide and thanks to calls from several concerned motorists, police were able to save the woman’s life. The incident took place on

Saturday when the woman was attempting to throw herself from the bridge connecting San Miguel with Campoamor, more than 30 metres high. The woman, an English national, had to be treated at the scene by a health team due to her high state of anxiety, and was later transferred to Torrevieja Hospital.

Councillor to be fined for attending a meeting while driving

Torrevieja councillor and deputy mayor Carmen Gomez has apologised after being caught attending a virtual meeting while driving. The meeting, which was carried out by video conference, saw the Mayor Eduardo Dolon, and a series of the town hall councillors discussing and voting on issues pertaining to the town’s budget. As the councillor can clearly be seen driving while attending the meeting by phone, opposition parties wasted no time in publicly criticising her just hours after the image from the meeting came out. Councillor Gomez has apologised for her actions, saying "When you drive you have to be attentive to driving one hundred percent,

with or without hands free," and adding that if she is fined, she will of course pay the penalty which could amount to €200 and two points on her licence. Head of the opposition PSOE, Fanny Serrano, took the opportunity to write to the mayor to remind him that he is also the head of the Local Police and proposed that he fines the Councillor for a traffic law violation. Councillor Gomez does not take a full time salary from the town hall. She is paid for her participation in plenary sessions and meetings, such as the budgetary virtual meeting in question, for which she is paid €178 for attendance.

Councillor Gomez was on her way to the secondary school where she works as a teacher when she signed in to the town hall meeting through her phone. Legislation on virtual meetings requires a continuous visual of the attendees in order to be able to verify their identity at all times. However, the highway code designates the use of mobile devices while driving as a very serious offense. The mayor at first said that attending the videoconference in this way was just "like going hands-free", although once the incident was made public, he indicated that his responsibility now is to propose the fine is issued to Councillor Gomez.

Orihuela Health Councillor clears confusion This week the Costa Blanca People spoke to Jose Galiano, Health Councillor for Orihuela in an exclusive interview to discuss the current coronavirus situation in the municipality and the government teams short-term plans. The key concern for the local business community is that the local municipalities might follow Murcia’s suit and close bars and restaurants completely, which in the lead up to Christmas and New Year would be disastrous for the industry. However, the Councillor assures the local business community that, this is NOT in the pipeline and in fact this is the step that, more than any other, they want to avoid. Señor Galiano said: “Right now we have no plans to close the bars and restaurants in Orihuela Costa, we are all committed to taking measures that have the least detrimental effect on our businesses. At the moment in comparison to neighbouring municipalities we have a good epidemiological situation here. “Of course everything depends of the evolution of cases, but at the moment the incidence rates are acceptable. Should we have a significant increase in cases and the occupation of hospital beds and ICU beds become unmanageable, then we will have

José Galiano

no choice but to take additional and necessary measures.” The figures are issued by the regional health department of the Valencian Community and local municipalities are not given free access to local breakdowns. In particular, there is no official distinction between Orihuela and Orihuela Costa, however, the Coast and Torremendo have escaped some of the more stringent measures because they come under Torrevieja Hospital and health service, rather than Vega Baja Hospital. It has been the Vega Baja area that has been particularly hard hit over the last two weeks with areas such as Almoradí recording more than

470 cases per one hundred thousand people. The Councillor said: “The total cumulative incidence to 25 October is 574,83 for the municipality of Orihuela including Orihuela Costa. These figures have improved over the last week, but we have to wait 14 days from this date to know the new numbers and see the improvements. “The improving data encourages the Town Hall to continue with the current measures and increase the good results. The waste water is being analysed across the whole municipality and the data has show an improvement in the last test.”

Strong rebound forecast for Spain The members of the European Union have had very little time to enjoy the respite provided by an economic rebound in the third quarter of the year. At the end of last week, the European Commission released its Autumn 2020 Economic Forecast, which projects fresh downturns as the continent grapples with another wave of the coronavirus pandemic. In Spain, Brussels is projecting that gross domestic product (GDP) will contract by 12.4 percent this year, particularly due to steep falls in the tourism and hospitality sectors. The European executive is also reducing projected growth for 2021: under the new forecast, the Spanish economy is set to expand by 5.4 percent in 2021 and by 4.8 percent in 2022. The European forecast is in line with the more pessimistic scenarios contemplated by the Bank of Spain and by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is projecting a 12.8 percent contraction of the Spanish economy this year. The Spanish government had calculated a drop in output of 11.2 percent. Recent developments have forced Brussels to revise its July forecast downward, and to push part of the

recovery into 2022. In July, the Commission had projected a Spanish GDP contraction of 9.4 percent for 2020 followed by growth of 7 percent in 2021. But the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic has led to closures in the services sector across the continent. In Spain, there is the added impact of the travel restrictions that were imposed on Spanish

destinations over the summer months. “After the deepest recession in EU history in the first half of this year and a very strong upswing in the summer, Europe’s rebound has been interrupted due to the resurgence in Covid-19 cases,” said EU Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni at the report presentation. “Growth will return in

2021 but it will be two years until the European economy comes close to regaining its pre-pandemic level.” Brussels believes that Spain’s economy will contract more than Italy’s this year (12.4 percent versus 9.9 percent) but will rebound faster in 2021 (5.4 percent versus 4.1 percent) and in 2022 (4.8 percent versus 2.8 percent). Neighbouring France is expected to experience growth of 4.1 percent in 2021 and 2.8 percent in 2022. Spain’s deficit, which was 2.9 percent of GDP in 2019, is expected to balloon to 12.2 percent in 2020 “due both to the contraction of tax bases affecting revenues as well as to policy measures to counteract the impact of the pandemic,” reads the report. The deficit should slowly narrow to 9.6 percent in 2021 and 8.6% in 2022. Public debt is also expected to soar by nearly 25 percentage points to 120.3 percent of GDP in 2020, then increase slightly to 122 percent in 2021 and 123.9 percent in 2022. The report warns that “the uncertainties and risks surrounding the Autumn 2020 Economic Forecast remain exceptionally large” due to the possibility of a worsening of the pandemic.

Job creation in Spain improves in October

Despite a new surge in coronavirus cases that has triggered fresh restrictions on economic activity, Spain’s employment figures improved in October. There were 113,974 new registrations with the Social Security system, considered a measure of job creation. But there were also nearly 50,000 more people who filed for unemployment benefits, according to figures released recently by the Social Security and Labour ministries. The unemployment rate now stands at 16.26 percent, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). The October spike represents the sixth month in a row that the Spanish economy has managed to recover some of the jobs lost due to the coronavirus crisis. September was also a good month for job creation, but there is still a long way to go before Spain makes up for the approximately one million jobs that were destroyed in March and April, when the country was under a strict coronavirus lockdown that brought the economy nearly to a halt.

Man to be compensated after losing a testicle at Vega Baja Hospital

There are now 18.99 million contributors to Spain’s safety net –a figure that includes 633,000 furloughed workers on the government’s ERTE scheme. That is still well below the 19.25 million who were paying into the system in February, right before the pandemic hit the country. The job recovery is not only visible in the six-month run of Social Security gains. It is also observable in the seasonally adjusted data, which factors in the effects of harvesting seasons or the start of the academic year. In this case, both registered unemployment and Social Security registrations show positive trends: the former is going down while the second one is rising. New Social Security registrations were driven by the start of the academic year, which led to 134,000 employments in the education sector, while hospitality – the big loser of the crisis – shed a further 85,000 jobs. There were also fewer workers on furlough (633,000) than in September, when the figure reached 728,000.

The Generalitat Valenciana will pay out €60,000 to a 45-year-old man after he lost a testicle due to a delay in emergency care at Vega Baja hospital. The incident occurred on March 2, 2015, when the man began to suffer from pain, nausea, dizziness and swelling at around 11 in the morning. He went to the Emergency Department of the Vega Baja Hospital at 1.15 pm but was not operated on until 9.00 pm. Had he had the operation earlier, testicular loss would possibly have been prevented. The Supreme Court this week ordered that the man be paid compensation for the resulting cosmetic damage, although the plaintiff initially asked for €120,000 in damages for cosmetic damage, loss of fertility and the resulting anxiety. However, the Supreme Court ruled out the latter claims for not having been accredited by experts. The Director of Emergencies commented that the delay in intervention was "due to the increase in the demand for care and that at 3:00 p.m. there is a shift change", something that the Patient Ombudsman has criticized, saying "this excuse unacceptable" , and adding that "the change of shift should not result in a healthcare failure as serious as this".

A home seller often thinks they know their home and its value better than anyone. The truth is, it’s the market that decides a home’s value. I have yet to find a property to which this rule does not apply. It doesn’t matter whether you sell during a global pandemic, a recession, or a busy and buoyant market. There is a buyer out there for every property. Sometimes it just takes a little more encouragement to force that buyer out of the shadows and show them what a great investment they could be making. And that encouragement would be in the form of the asking price. Is your home priced accordingly? Is it updated and in proper repair? Is reluctance to complete repairs going to force you out of the current market? The buyer and other agents will compare your home against its competitors in the marketplace. They also tend to overestimate any repairs. If money is tight right now and you have no source of liquid or borrowed funds to make the necessary

SE VENDE changes or repairs, you’ll need to lower the asking price to reflect its “as-is” condition. This way the property will entice someone solely on value. Buyers are very savvy. The average home buyer has already spent hours on the internet searching for homes. They’ve watched endless virtual tours and have seen inside your property. How does your asking price compare to its condition? When a house is overpriced, the market will respond with a lack of interest and fewer viewings. Price fixes everything! Nine detained for prostituting minors in Alicante The National Police are looking for the head of a gang that induced young teens to escape from a sheltered facility in order to lure them into a world of drugs and prostitution. National Police in Alicante have uncovered a child exploitation ring in which youngsters aged 15 and 16 were allegedly induced to escape from a sheltered housing facility to work as prostitutes. The investigation was carried out by the Family and Women's Unit (UFAM) of the National Police in which nine people were detained, including four minors - one male and three female. Police are still seeking the suspected leader of the organisation. The suspect, a young man, is the son of the elderly owner of an apartment in the centre of Alicante where minors were allegedly groomed for abuse. The 70 year old father and his daughter were also brought in for questioning but both were released after giving statements. Both denied any involvement in the underage abuse ring. The police investigation began after those in charge of a living shelter for minors in Alicante raised the alarm after discovering what happened to a

young woman after she had escaped. Investigators found out that there were two underage girls who tried to convince other teenagers to escape from centre and go to an address in Alicante. There, the minors were made up and dressed in such a way that made them look older. Once the minors had been dressed, they were brought to an apartment in the centre of Alicante, where the young man currently being sought by the police managed contact with clients and sent the young teenagers to work at hotels and other locations in the city. For the transfers, one of those

arrested acted as chauffeur and using a high end car, ferried the youngsters to clients. This person allegedly took one of the minors to a villa in Benijรณfar, where he gave her drugs and had sex with her in exchange for money, according to the young woman's statement. The adults arrested have been accused of a variety of crimes, such as the corruption of minors to promote or facilitate prostitution, induction to run away from home, sexual abuse of children under 16 years of age, belonging to a criminal group and for encouraging the consumption of drugs by minors.

Campoamor beach lagoon

Police rescue family from water channel

Amigos de los Humedales del Sur de Alicante (AHSA) and Amigos de Sierra Escalona (ASE) have proposed the ecological recovery of the mouth of the Nacimiento river at rambla on the Glea beach in Campoamor. The request, made to the Orihuela City Council, points out that this location is one of the historic wetlands of Orihuela, a coastal wetland linked to the mouth of the Nacimiento River, a river that crosses the protected area of the Sierra Escalona and the Dehesa de Campoamor. The lands of the old lagoon are used as a parking lot for Glea beach despite the serious risk of flooding they present but ecologists believe the recovered wetland would regulate avenues. The ecologists explain that the project should be carried out in coordination with the Generalitat, the Segura Hydrographic Confederation and the Ministry of Ecological Transition - the three administrations with powers over the land. In a project that must follow the principles of ecological restoration, based on the historical documents that record the existence of the wetland and adhere to the native species

The Local Police in Orihuela Costa has rescued three members of a family who could not get out of a water transfer channel. The man and his two sons got into difficulty after the father fell into the canal when he was walking alongside it with his children. The boys tried to rescue their parent, but also ended up in the water and needed to be rescued after they realised none of them could get out. Local Police arrived on the scene after receiving several calls from local residents who had seen the family in distress and were unable to help. The officers were able to rescue the group ropes and lifejackets. Fortunately, none of the family was injured, but all were feeling the effects and showing symptoms of hypothermia due to the time they had spent in the cold water. They were checked over and all are safely back at home.

Ecologists propose Prevention of pine processionary caterpillars restoration of The Department of the Environment launches has awarded the contract for the prevention of the pine processionary caterpillars across the municipality. The contract was won by Compañía de Tratamientos Levante S.L. for the amount of 39,600 euros for a period of three years (with the possibility of an extension for two more years) and whose bid amount amounts to 66,165 euros. The pine processionary caterpillar, native to the Mediterranean pine forests, wreaks havoc each year and is one of the most destructive species to pines and cedars. However, it’s the potentially fatal response that the pest causes in dogs, children, the ill and elderly that is of most concern. The pine processionary moth hatches around May to July and only lives for about a day. During this time it must mate and lay its eggs in the foliage of a pine tree; a single female can lay up to 300 tiny eggs and it takes around a month for them to hatch. Once hatched, they build a white cotton wool-like nest and continue to feed on the pine leaves. At the end of winter, the caterpillars, or procesionaria del pino, make their way to the ground in a long chain, or ‘procession’ – the behaviour which gives them their name. They are recognisable by their

distinctive orange and brown colour and blue bands. Eventually, the caterpillars will disperse to burrow just below the ground, but before this happens they can be a danger to humans and other mammals. It is their hair that is dangerous; if they are poked or touched the hair causes a nasty rash and give off particles that can cause respiratory problems. They are particularly toxic for young children and animals. If the caterpillar is stressed or threatened it can eject its hairs, which act like harpoons that penetrate and irritate any exposed skin. Dogs are particularly vulnerable as they will pick up the hairs on their paws and lick them as they start to itch. This transfers the hairs on to the animal’s tongue, resulting in itching, swelling, vomiting and even death. Councillor Aparicio explained, “the works will begin with a preventive phase, scheduled for October-November, where

pheromone traps will be placed to capture he moths and determine the flight curve in the area. In this way, the beginning of the spraying treatments with a biological insecticide product will be better adjusted by means of a pneumatic cannon in the pine forest areas in order to exterminate the caterpillars in the first phase of their biological cycle”. After these treatments, it will be considered whether there are any pockets in the previously treated areas in January or February and the contracted company will take care of their felling, collection and management. "In the event that the removal of the nests is not possible due to technical problems, interception rings will be placed to prevent the descent of caterpillars to the ground", the Councillor explained. The company will also deal with any reports notices that are received by Orihuela City Council in relation to the pest.

typical of the Mediterranean wetlands of Alicante. The Nacimiento River destroyed the promenade section and the road that ran across its mouth during last September’s DANA and led to the spontaneous recovery of the lagoon for several months. This section of the promenade has not been rebuilt but the City Council is pressing to rebuild the section due to pressure from the local residents as the water has divided and obstructed the road connection between the two ends of Dehesa de Campoamor. AHSA claims that La Glea, which appears mapped as a lagoon in the mid-19th century, is a space of natural interest that can be linked to the micro-reserve of flora of Punta de la Glea and is a resource of cultural interest due to the stone bridge of the old N-332. All of this fits perfectly within the framework of the promotion of sustainable touristic, cultural and landscape heritage of Orihuela. For ecologists, the renaturalisation of this space would give rise to a resource of natural interest for school groups, hikers, naturalists, retired people and other groups.

Former king Juan Carlos targeted by new investigation A new investigation involving former Spanish king Juan Carlos I is being transferred to prosecutors at the Supreme Court. Spain’s prosecutor general, Dolores Delgado, made the announcement shortly after an online daily reported on the case. No information has been released about the contents of the probe, or whether it affects other members of the royal family. Until now the investigation had been handled by Spain’s AntiCorruption Prosecution Office. Juan Carlos, who reigned from 1975 until his abdication in 2014, was already the target of a separate investigation by Supreme Court prosecutors over his role in alleged kickbacks paid to secure a contract to build a high-speed train to Mecca. That investigation is being led by Juan Ignacio Campos, the same prosecutor who will take charge of the new probe. The announcement by Dolores Delgado came just hours after the online daily elDiario.es reported that Juan Carlos I and several of his relatives were being investigated in connection with the use of credit cards that drew funds from opaque sources. After this news story broke, the Prosecution Office said it would investigate “an alleged leak of information.” Prosecutorial sources have

confirmed that the AntiCorruption Office has been investigating for months transactions made with credit cards allegedly used by the father of the reigning monarch Felipe VI. These same sources said that other relatives are also under investigation, but that they do not include Juan Carlos' wife Sofía, King Felipe VI or Queen Letizia. According to elDiario.es, the credit cards drew funds from an account where neither Juan Carlos nor any family member showed up as account holders. The transactions under investigation were allegedly made in 2016, 2017 and 2018, which is significant because Juan Carlos lost his constitutional immunity when he abdicated in June 2014, and could be prosecuted for wrongdoing committed after that date. Prosecutorial sources said that the Anti-Corruption Office has investigated several individuals and requested information from banks regarding a large amount of financial transactions involving the suspect credit cards.

In March of this year, Felipe VI renounced any future inheritance from his father in connection with alleged financial irregularities involving Swiss bank accounts and multi-million-euro donations from Saudi Arabia. The reigning monarch also stripped his father of his annual stipend of €194,232. Juan Carlos served on the throne for 39 years and is widely credited with helping stop the 23rd February, 1981 coup attempt in Spain. He abdicated the throne in 2014, in the wake of waning popularity fueled in part by a scandal known as Noos and by a hunting trip during which his relationship with a woman named Corinna Larsen emerged. In May 2019 he dropped all official activities and retired from public life. On 2nd August of this year, amid mounting accusations of financial wrongdoing, the king emeritus left the royal residence in Madrid and his whereabouts remained a mystery for two weeks until the Royal Household confirmed that he had settled down in the United Arab Emirates.

Investment Jitters? Investors could be forgiven for being a little on edge. Financial markets have been on a rollercoaster ride this year.

As banks are offering all time low returns, where else can you put your money to get a decent return?

The value of the UK's biggest 100 companies has plunged by a fifth – with sectors such as leisure, tourism and some retail businesses on their knees.

Part of the stress of investing can be watching financial markets swinging this way and that – and trying to work out how to react.

There are likely to be more stomach-lurching moments ahead as we hurtle towards more lockdowns in Europe, the fall-out from the US presidential election and a possible No Deal Brexit.

There are thousands of products on the market that can take advantage of the stock market whilst balancing returns against risk. The best way forward is to make sure you don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

But for investors who can live with market volatility, the next few months could present some good opportunities.

If you are looking for help, then the team at Seagate Wealth are on hand to advise you every

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Considering the week sterling has had, it is a pleasant surprise to see the pound losing only 0.2% on average. The pound went into last weekend looking fairly comfortable and emerged from it on the defensive after PM Johnson’s Halloween announcement of a new four-week antiCovidlockdown starting Thursday. It ought not to have come as a surprise but many investors had evidently not been paying attention.Alongside the lockdown, the government have extended the furlough scheme as well. Coronavirus concerns coupled with Brexit woes discouraged investors from buying the pound, as too did disappointing data, which did nothing to lighten the mood. The European Union’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said there are “serious divergences” in Brexit negotiations, with talks breaking off mid-week. A report from the Institute for Government concluded that the UK is unprepared for the changes coming at the end of December and that, with Brexit on top of Covid-19, “local authorities and businesses may well be overwhelmed”. The UK services sector purchasing managers’ index also piled in, with a reading of 51.4, a point lower on the month and a point below forecast. Therefore in the grand scheme of things, sterling got off lightly, with the Bank of England of some assistance. As expected, the Monetary Policy Committee kept the Bank Rate unchanged at 0.1%. It also decided to increase its asset purchase programme by £150 billion to £875 billion, £50 billion more than expected. Sterling reacted positively to the news because the MPC minutes did not point to negative interest rates. The news was worth half a cent to sterling against the euro and the US dollar.

EURO As with the UK and the pound, a significant contra-indicator for potential buyers of the euro was the renewed increase in Covid infections, which has prompted several countries to reimpose curfews and lockdowns. Unfortunately for sterling, most of those European measures have either been in effect for a while or were wellflagged, but the euro still had a performance that could be politely described asundistinguished. It lost 0.5% to sterling but the so did the Swiss franc, and the Japanese yen lost twice as much. At a political level the European Parliament came to an important and long-awaited agreement on Thursday. In essence, member countries will be denied access to EU funds if they fail to uphold whet the EU calls “the rule of law” by, for example, politicising the courts. The decision should make it easier to unblock the distribution of the €750 billion Covid recovery fund and the bloc’s €1.1 trillion budget. On balance, more economic data beat expectations than fell short. Most PMI’s for manufacturing came in ahead of forecast, if not necessarily higher on the month. The best Eurozone reading was Germany’s 58.2, a 31month high, while the only sub-50 result was a 48.7 from Greece. The only real disappointment was a 5.1% monthly fall in French consumer spending, but the other side of that coin was an 18.2% expansion of French gross domestic product in the third quarter. Spain’s economy grew by a quarterly 16.7% and Germany’s by 8.2%. For the Eurozone as a whole, growth in Q3 was 12.7%, appreciably better than the forecast 9.4%. Eurozone inflation was unchanged at a provisional -0.3% in October.

Generous donation to Animal Shelter A cheery story for a change amid Covid doom and gloom. Pictured is Catherine from Torrevieja donating a fabulous â‚Ź500 to ADAT (Association of Defenders of Animals of Torrevieja) based at the municipal Albergue (animal shelter) in Avenida Los NĂŠnufares, beside the fire station. ADAT helps provide many things outside of the remit of the Town Hall, such as more expensive wet and dry food for cats and kittens, as the cats (like people) have different dietary requirements. In addition to welcoming donations, the organisation is always looking

for volunteers, foster homes and people to adopt. At the current moment they have about 40 cats/kittens in the shelter, plus lots more in temporary foster

care. If you care to know more about ADAT, the shelter or indeed like to help in any way contact alberguecats@gmail.com

New breath test could detect virus in seconds His ex is still in his life We have been married for 7 years with two children. My husband was married before, and so was I, but his ex wife is still very much in his life. In my book; divorce means divorce, but she’s always messaging him, and he replies every time. Their messages are chatty and upbeat, although not flirty, at least not from him, but she does try and flirt with him. I tell him her messages are inappropriate and that it’s making me unhappy and insecure. He knows how unhappy I am that he is still in touch with her, and he says he has to maintain some kind of relationship for his son’s sake, which I understand, however his son is now 20 and has left home. I think in your shoes I would also be uneasy with this relationship. Has she got a man in her life? You don’t say, but I guess she hasn’t and is using her ex to fill the gap as he did before they split up. Your longer letter says that she was the one who ended the marriage when she had an affair, and he was hurt, but and that he is no longer in love with her. In any case it isn’t right that you and he should put up with her interference in your lives. I think you’ve got to sit your husband down and be very serious about how you feel. Tell him that you’ve reached the end of your tether and that you feel you cannot continue with this woman taking up so much of his life. It is fair to say that his son is now grown and independent, so they no longer have to speak daily about arrangements for him. You must insist something needs to change and tell him that your marriage could be in serious trouble if something doesn’t change.

Early trials of a new test for coronavirus open up the possibility of "rapid identification" for the disease in seconds rather than hours. Research shows breath analysis developed in Wales may be able to distinguish Covid-19 from other chest infections almost immediately. Results published by the Lancet follow trials in Scotland and Germany. Developers Imspex Diagnostics said its devices could be ready to use in six months - if they can secure funding. "The potential, I think, is very exciting," said founder and chief executive Santi Dominguez. "Being so immediate, you could see many different applications outside a traditional hospital environment. "You could see the potential in aviation, you could see it in transportation in general, you could see it in immigration. "You could take a quick sample, it's non-invasive, you don't need a particularly specialised person to collect those samples - and a few

minutes later you get a result." The latest machines were developed by Imspex at its headquarters in the Cynon Valley in south Wales. Originally, the technology was being used to develop tests to detect illnesses such as lung cancer, and how to distinguish between bacterial and viral respiratory diseases quickly. But as the new strain of coronavirus became a global

pandemic, the firm took the decision to focus its diagnostic efforts on the emerging disease. Two trials have now been carried out using the firm's technology, on hospital patients in Edinburgh and in Dortmund, Germany, early in the Covid outbreak. The study, led by Loughborough University, evolved from the university's work on its toxi-triage project to

help emergency services in civil disasters. The researchers tried to pinpoint whether the machines could tell the difference between a patient with Covid-19 or another type of chest infection. The tests were able to make out a "signature" for Covid in the chemicals, which was then confirmed by more traditional, and invasive, swab tests. In 80 percent of cases, they were able to accurately predict if the patient had Covid-19 distinguishing the illness from other breathing problems such as asthma or bacterial pneumonia. In the Edinburgh study, the researchers also identified chemical compounds that had a "significant predictive power" for the severity of the Covid infection, and whether it may cause death. However, these remain small scale studies, with about 100 patients involved. The company behind the equipment said it still needed to refine the technology before it was ready to be used in everyday situations, whether in hospitals or other environments such as airports.

Tow Bars and the Law If you need to tow a trailer with your vehicle, you will need to have a tow bar installed. However, in view of the serious implications of getting the installation wrong, it must only be done under certain conditions, in an authorised and qualified workshop and in compliance with the law. In 2011, the law in Spain categorised tow bars. Prior to that date they were simply another accessory which could be added to the vehicle, but the new “anti-tuning” law standardised the European directive of 2007 which elevated the tow bar from an accessory to a “major reform”. Therefore, all tow bars not only have to be of an approved and authorised type for the individual vehicle in question, they can only be fitted in certified workshops where a technical report can be issued, a requirement for the vehicle to pass its ITV inspection. There are two types of tow bars, a fixed ball hook and a removable ball latch. The fixed ball hook, as its name suggests, does not disassemble and any form of manipulation is forbidden. In view of the installation procedures in order to ensure the legality of the tow bar, any action on the tow bar would be considered a manipulation of a major reform, which can only be done legally

in a workshop. The removable ball latch is, as the name suggests, detachable and consists of a fixed element and an easily removable part, which may be semi-automatic or by a thread, or by automatic pressure and ball rotation. There are other removable tow bars which can be retracted into the vehicle, but these form an integral part of the construction. When tow bars are not in use, they can pose a hazard to other road users, as any protrusion from the vehicle can cause damage, such as when reversing into a parking space, especially as the tow bar is not visible, and interferes with the shape and design of the vehicle´s safety features and can cause considerable damage in the event of a rear-end collision. That said, as we have already mentioned, a fixed ball hook cannot be manipulated in any way and therefore cannot be removed (unless done on a

permanent basis by a qualified mechanic), and so there is no legal requirement to remove the tow bar when not in use. Similarly, the very design of a removable tow bar does not constitute a legal requirement to remove it either, although you may choose to do for your own safety. There is a legal requirement however that no tow bar, fixed or removable, can interfere with the visibility of rear elements of the vehicle, namely the number plate and lights. Article 9 of the Ley de Seguridad Vial ensures that these items must be visible at all times and not obscured. It is also important to remember that only officially approved tow bars are permitted in Spain and only for the purpose of towing a trailer (including caravans). The use of ropes, A-Frames and vehicle-tovehicle towing bars or any other unapproved devices are not permitted by law.

Guardia Civil say total control of road access unfeasible Unions claim that there are not enough troops to monitor the region’s road perimeters 24 hours a day. The three principal unions claim that it is not possible to man a 24 hour border control. JUCIL claims that complete border closure is impossible with the current troops and therefore at the moment, strategic controls are being carried out only on main roads. Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil association AEGC says it too cannot see that an airtight border closure is viable, not even by engaging the entire service of officers. To cover 24 hours a day, the AEGC estimates that many more troops would be needed and for this the army would have be deployed on the streets. However, both groups consider that such a drastic move is not necessary and emphasised that current checkpoints serve to deter offenders. The AUGC also considers it would be quite difficult to close all roads to control vehicle access and point out that many more troops would be needed, since there are many regional roads through which the main access roads to the province can be circumvented. The Vega Baja is a perfect example of the problem facing security forces in monitoring all access roads at all times. This area and the Region of Murcia share dozens of kilometres of regional border, some urban areas separated by a single street. In Pilar de la Horadada for example police checkpoints are centred on the N-332 and the Alicante-Cartagena motorway, but residents can drive across the regional border through countless back roads.

SMGS at Lo Romero A much depleted squad of 24 members and 4 guest players made the journey to Lo Romero. Desertion rate was high due to a combination of Covid fears, the forecast of torrential rain and travel restrictions for those living in Murcia. Blaming a malfunctioning GPS, one of our members managed to drive from his home in Alicante province and arrive in Lo Romero, also Alicante province, via Murcia region by a few Km (an honest mistake). The fair weather golfers missed a great day at a course appreciated by the society. On arrival, the golf warriors were delighted to discover that most handicaps had been somewhat inflated by the committee's decision to adopt the World Handicap System. It's a complicated affair but luckily all tabulation is done by computer software, a new-fangled technology thingy that has rendered redundant our fingercounting handicap secretary. Buoyed by stroke boosts, the lads were itching for action. As ever, the course was in excellent condition and a light breeze provided losers with the only excuse not to score well. Not unexpectedly, scoring was on the high side. Ken Flaherty thanked the society for its very generous donation of €450 to Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. A big gracias to the San Miguel Committee and the Lo Romero management for arranging the game at short notice after the cancellation of Murcia's La Serena. Next week's game is at Villamartin. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Mick Roscoe a call on 649226955.

Busters Golf Las Ramblas Society November Golf Society For our November game, we traveled to El Plantio, as we approached the entrance to the course the sun came out giving us excellent weather conditions for the day, some of Plantio’s fairway’s had been reseeded and dressed but overall they were in reasonable shape, with the greens being in very good condition. We had originally booked to play at La Serena but due to the dreaded Covid problems the Murcia province was on lockdown, but luckily El Plantio was able to accommodate us. We returned to Bar Little Leias (ex Bar El Toro) in Calle Vigo Quesada for our presentation to be welcomed by Ian and his staff, due to one of our members recently celebrating his birthday, post-birthday food was added to the sandwiches and nibbles that the bar provides for us. Onto our winners, BF9 and not being amongst our first three winners was won by Bill Peters with fifteen points, our BB9 being won by John Rush with nineteen points, both receiving bottles of red wine sponsored by the bar, our nearest the pins winners were Bill Peters on holes seven and fourteen, Ian Allison on hole nine and Rob Ashman winning the eighteenth, all received sleeves of golf balls, we had two, two’s winners today, with Bill Peters and Terry Sharley sharing the pot, in third place with thirty-four points was Rob Ashman taking home a bottle of red wine, in second place with thirty-five points was Peter List winning bottles of red and

white wine sponsored by the bar but our winner on the day with thirty-seven points was Terry Sharley, taking home a bottle of Vodka, our soccer card winner with Sunderland was John Rawlings. To spice things up this month John Rush added a prize for the least amount of putts taken over the eighteen holes by a non winner, this additional prize was won by our Captain Martin Collins taking thirty-two putts, over the eighteen holes. These November results changed the leader board for the Player Of The Year competition which is won by a total of the best six scores over the year, we now have a close battle on for the overall POTY competition, the final game being played next month at Vistabella. If you are interested in joining our small friendly society (it's free) please contact me at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com with your handicap and phone contact details. Barry Grinsell.

Monday’s team ‘Counter Game’ was the version where you knew before each hole was played how many out of the four scores were to count. The fictional Albert obviously played well on the day as, with total score of 104 points, he was in the winning line up alongside AnneMarie Weisheit, Friedel Knebel and Pete Dunn. Ten points behind them and taking 2nd spot Albert appeared again, this time with Graham & Petina Murray and Mike Chapman. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN

half, nobody would have minded if they hadn’t come out for the second half.

chris@costablancapeople.com

Ah, the weekend of the terrible penalty. Not the giving of the penalty, you’ll understand - though there were enough of them again to warrant a column of their own. The taking of them. Three shockers from Messrs Lookman, Vardy and De Bruyne though in fairness to Leicester’s main man, he’d already scored one before he missed his second. But, we’ll get on to all that as we take our usual meander through all things Premier League from this weekend past whilst reflecting on some of the mid-week tomfoolery. Speaking of which, Jose Mourinho cranked up the Jose Mourinhometer during the week, didn’t he? Following rent-an-opinion Danny Murphy suggesting that Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah are, well, cheats, Mourinho waded in defending his number 9 after the fake controversy about him helping Adam Lallana foul him last weekend. I don’t know what Murphy is bleating on about, to be honest - he scored all his Premier League goals from the spot and I doubt his teammates won every single one of them honestly.

Next Mourinho was hilariously in a tizz about Gareth Bale being coached by a current Arsenal coach when he heads off on Wales duty. With Ryan Giggs, er, unavailable Wales seem to have drafted in a few extra pairs of hands and Mou genuinely believes that it is a plan to scupper Tottenham’s title bid. All that seemed to be forgotten as Spurs briefly hit the summit following a late 1-0 win over WBA. That’s a defeat that’s got to hurt Slaven Bilic, a manager seemingly duking it out with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for who is getting sacked first. Matty Doherty hit an area which just so happened to be where Kane’s head was lurking and the England captain had his 150th Premier League goal. That puts Kane level with Michael Owen in 9th place on the all-time scorer list and, between you and I, I cannot see Owen adding to his. Jose reckons Spurs would be champions in many other leagues across Europe, following this win. Well, given how easily the despatched the non-champions of Belgium the other week we can assume he didn’t mean that one. Manchester City and Liverpool promised much and for at least 43 minutes they delivered. Given the amount of rain falling at the Etihad and the fact that both sides looked absolutely done in during the second

The entire build-up was centred on whether King Klopp would pick Bobby Firmino or Diogo Jota and, like the guy who could decide which girl he preferred, he dated both - sending Liverpool out with a Fab Four for the first time since that band was quite popular.

Jordan Pickford continuing his vendetta against opposition central defenders. I can’t repeat those views here, but let’s just say that Seamus thinks Harry is an ‘expletive diving expletive’. Solskjaer had a curious post-match presser - has he managed to clean that spot on the desk yet? Ole would love Bruno Fernandes to develop the ability to be in two places at once - praising him for his passing and then criticising

Kyle Walker, further endearing himself to Roy Keane, managed to gift Mohamed Salah the chance to give the champions the lead from the spot. At the other end, the question was whether Gabby Jesus meant to do what he did before he scored. Now come on, folks we’re not talking about Gary from the local pub side here. Jesus is the second-choice striker for the second-best team in the country. I think we can take his word for it when he says he meant to stick Trent on his backside and then toepoke it home. It’s probably getting to the point where defenders should take to the field without arms, as Joe Gomez was a touch unlucky to be penalised, even after Craig Pawson checked the monitor. But, look at it this way - had it not been given, we’d not have seen Kevin de Bruyne put daylight between the ball and the post as he dragged his penno wide. That’s not something you see every week. Gary Neville, currently challenging Keano as the one I enjoy most on TV for vastly different reasons, suggested that John Terry would have given away 40 penalties a season with these current rules. Which is entirely fair, I always thought JT was Chelsea’s best goalkeeper - even when Cech was in nets. Liverpool will be delighted with the point - Peppy G not so much. Having taken Manchester United back to being the Greatest Team in the World having beaten PSG and RB Leipzig, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was set to lose his job if United lost at Goodison Park. With that in mind, he made the obvious call - and dropped Paul Pogba. You don’t get the feeling that the players want rid of Solskjaer considering that every time he is on the brink the players do what is needed to get him another month. United were decent against Everton, even if the wheels are well and truly off Ancelotti’s title run. Harry Maguire, having had to defend himself during the week off the back of another Roy Keane tirade, feels that people just want United to fail - yes, Harry. That’s what happens after you dominate football for the best part of 20 years with a manager that created a siege mentality at the club. The rules say, following that, people will enjoy seeing you fail. Seamus Coleman also has pretty clear views on Maguire, following

him for not being on the end of the passes. Not even Eric Cantona managed to do that. The United manager then went on a rant about the fixture list being ‘a disgrace’ - United had returned from Turkey at 4am on Thursday only to kick off at 12:30 on Saturday. Frankly, after their performance in Turkey I think Roy Keane would have made them walk home meaning they’d have had to go straight to Merseyside, so be more grateful please Mr Solkskjaer.

VAR intervened once more - well, once Martin Atkinson’s monitor had been fixed. Villa soon led against Arsenal, thanks to young Saka stealing in at the far post at toeing it home.

Someone seems to have located Ngolo Kante and put him back in a Chelsea shirt. The World Cup winner was back to his best against Sheffield United as Frank Lampard’s Chelsea got Ian Wright so excited he thinks they will win the league.

Sometimes it is good to have players that have the bottle to step up and take a last-minute penalty when you are 1-0 down. Sometimes. And probably not when it was Ademola Lookman.

The Blades probably scored the nicest goal of the night - the problem for them was that Ziyech created four. It was hard to call whether the ex-Ajax man was Chelsea’s most dangerous player or whether it was Sheffield United’s goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale who, on this form, is heading for a secondstraight relegation. Who had Crystal Palace scoring four at home against Leeds? For all the talk of Marcelo Bielsa, can we also give Roy Hodgson a load more respect, please? Bielsa is the greatest coach in the world, apparently, yet Uncle Roy - the ultimate wise owl - did an absolute number on him. Palace were given a huge advantage by Leeds’ keeper Meslier trying to keep the ball out of the net whilst being in the actual net himself and another shocking VAR decision. Patrick Bamford, horribly treated in a short spell at Palace years ago, was given offside for pointing to where he wanted the ball to be played. Yes, for pointing. Maybe strikers should have no arms, either. I’m not entirely sure Bernd Leno would have saved John McGinn’s piledriver even if Ross Barkley hadn’t been standing in front of him. Aston Villa thought they led at the Emirates but

Arsenal have scored just nine Premier League goals this season - I know we’re all supposed to rate Mikel Arteta because he’s Pep’s apprentice and speaks about 13 languages, but it all feels very Unai Emery to me.

Fulham’s big signing felt that was the perfect time and stage to bring out the Panenka - and the ball barely reached the goal. Don’t worry, though. Lookman has taken responsibility and vowed to score his next one - which will be taken in 2034 in his own testimonial as that is the only time someone will let him anywhere near the penalty spot again. Issa Diop is still looking for his wedding ring and whilst he is doing that I am trying to decide whether Tomas Soucek is the next Fellaini or, in fact, the next David Platt. Which is much better. I am still not sure. Leicester City top the table courtesy of the aforementioned Jamie Vardy penalty, crazily given as the ball was drilled into the Wolves defender from precisely 0.7mm. Vardy netted and then missed the second one, which in fairness was absolutely nailed on. But Leicester are top, Spurs are second and whilst other teams struggle to get going we’ve been here before, no? Southampton topped the table themselves, briefly, having beaten Newcastle 2-0. Imagine that a year ago after they were still recovering from that 9-0 drubbing. Steve Bruce says there will be big changes at St James’ Park after that defeat - probably best not to start giving Mike Ashley international break ideas, Brucey...
