unday finally saw hundreds of people flock to Zenia Boulevard to put their best foot forward for charity with the annual Santa Walk. Organised by Maria and the Pink Ladies, all of the money raised goes directly to the Spanish anti-cancer charity, the AECC. This year, as always, the walkers and those who came along to give their support, got into the festive Spirit of the walk and dressed in fancy dress. Of course, there were lots of Father and Mrs Christmas’ but also, snowmen, elves, reindogs and Santa-dogs. Celebrating Christmas in style

Dead couple found in a house in Torrevieja A woman of 63 years old and a man of 67 were found dead in a property in Torrevieja. The woman had been dead for several weeks and was in an advanced state of decomposition whilst the man had only been dead for a few days. The bodies were found in a property in Calle Bella Antonia in the area of Nueva Torrevieja. They were both found in the sitting room of the property and there were no signs of violence. The first hypothesis about their deaths is that the woman died of natural causes some weeks ago and that the man also died of natural causes more recently without having alerted the authorities to the death of his partner. The couple had to be retrieved by firemen entering the property over the balcony, allowing the emergency services and Guardia Civil to enter.

Watch out for crime over the Christmas period The National Police are warning people to be extra vigilant over the Christmas period due to an increased risk of theft. People should take extra care whilst Christmas shopping, visiting markets and with their personal possessions generally. In response to the usual increase in crime during this period, the police are Continued on page 4

On Friday 9th December the townspeople of Torrevieja once again got together to celebrate Christmas with carols in the square. This popular, annual event went ahead as planned in spite of one newspaper circulating that it wasn’t taking place. It was good to see so many residents of the town of all nationalities joining together. It hadn’t been the brightest of few days

Particular thanks goes to Gloria, who helped to coordinate and bring the musicians together. ‘Hopefully everyone who participated enjoyed the evening and went away still singing. Thanks too to the Costa Blanca People for providing the song sheet,’ adds Councillor Morate. It wasn’t just a carol concert. Those participating could also enjoy the Christmas

in Torrevieja and rain was still forecast. However, Animalistas Torrevieja had agreed to bring umbrellas to sell.. just in case. As it turned out, rain wasn’t a problem and it was a perfect evening for the backdrop of the laser show set against the church La Inmaculada de Concepción. ‘Everyone loved the laser show,’ explained Councillor Carmen Morate who had organised the event. ‘We really appreciate the musicians and singers who came out tonight. It’s an important event for the international community but it couldn’t take place without people being prepared to come along and join in. It was a bit touch and go at times this year due to availability but the town council has always been fully committed to this event and I am delighted that it’s been supported by so many people once again.’

Reach Out/ Extiende La Mano were there collecting money and stalls were selling items to raise much-needed funds for cat and dog rescue including proyecto CES. One family we asked really enjoyed the evening. ‘They loved the light show,’ says Karin Gullon, who had brought her children to the square. ‘They joined in with the Christmas songs they recognised such as ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘We Wish you a Merry Christmas’. ‘It was very good,’ says daughter Emily Canser Gullon.‘I liked the instruments, the lights and the cotton candy.’ Children Annika and Emily do have one request though; ‘Please, please, please can we sing ‘Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer’ next year!’ Suzanne O’Connell

Tourist social networking comes out top The Tourist Office in Torrevieja is rather proud of its record when it comes to the use of social media. The Valencian Institute of Tourist Technologies has just released statistics to suggest that the Tourist Office is maintaining a high social media profile. On Facebook it comes in the top 10 of the Valencian community and 6th in the province of Alicante. It also does well in Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. The social networks are managed by the staff at the Tourism Office and they have been on Facebook since 2011. By the end of 2015 Torrevieja’s tourism page had 9,040 followers and currently there are 17,596 people who follow it. On Twitter and Instagram the Torrevieja Tourism account is @torreviejaturis.

Saturday 10th December was the official 20th anniversary of when the Torrevieja La Mata Natural Park was granted protected status. To celebrate the day the public were invited to the park’s information centre to find out more about this natural resource on our doorstep. Between the hours of 11.00am and 2.00pm a range of stalls representing different environmental agencies connected to the park were on display. There was also the release of three falcons back into the wild and plenty of food for those taking time out to visit the centre to enjoy. Councillor Fanny Serrano was amongst those attending. She is keen to see the natural parks and lakes of the area become a key tourist attraction as well as ensuring that they are protected and cared for. Looking after this large area of natural beauty is not easy. The official staff rely on volunteers to keep the park running smoothly and the wildlife that lives there protected. The members of Asociación rutas y caminos de la sal were there to show people what they do and, hopefully, to encourage a few more people to sign up and volunteer. ‘We have had quite a lot of interest today,’ says Jenny Dodd on the association’s behalf. ‘We’re attracting more Spanish members now which we’re pleased to see.’ One Spanish volunteer, born and bred in Torrevieja, has been disappointed that there hasn’t been more local involvement until recently. ‘There’s a lot of work involved in looking after the

If you would like to join the volunteers and help maintain the parks and lagunas you can come to the association’s next meeting on 7th January at 10am. The meetings are held at the information centre and everyone is welcome to come along and see how they can help boost the efforts of this important group and preserve this remarkable landmark. With so many people who volunteer now in one form or another, they need to have recognition and also proper training and preparation for the tasks they take on. ‘Some of the work we are expecting volunteers to engage in is quite complex,’ explains Councillor Morate. ‘We are now producing a guide that is dedicated to the role.’There will also be a number of free gifts available on the day including free calendars, shirts and volunteer vests. Free bus travel will be available for those residing in Torrevieja’s 3rd age housing and young people too who are interested in voluntary work. Suzanne O’Connell

UK-Spain flight market BITE SIZE ranked largest in Europe NEWS: Spain has always been a popular destination for British holidaymakers all year round and according to the latest Official Airline Guide (OAG) data, the UKSpain market is the largest European country pairing this winter season. Compared to last year's winter months, the market has grown by more than 12 percent for the number of seats and flights between Spain and the UK suggesting that more and more Brits looking for winter sun are choosing Spain as their desired destination. The pairing between the UK and Spain being named as the largest in Europe is not only good for the airlines but also positive news for the Spanish property market, as Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director of leading homebuilder Taylor Wimpey España, explains. He said: “The increase in the number of flights and seats available between Spain and the UK reaffirms the high demand for the Spanish sunshine as Brits seek an

escape from the dreary winter weather at home. “With short haul flights from the UK to Spain proving the most popular routes in Europe, Taylor Wimpey España is ready to accommodate this winter sun demand with the launch of a new residential phase on the La Recoleta III development on the border of Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja. “This area of the Costa Blanca is particularly popular due to the excellent climate and transportation links as well as the range of available water sports including windsurfing, sailing and paragliding that can be enjoyed all year round.” Local hotels, bar and restaurants are also looking forward to benefitting from winter tourists. Many hostels, hotels, campsites and apart-hotels are already reporting increased occupancy rates based on the same time last year and are predicting that thiswill increase even more over the Christmas and New Year period.

El Corte Inglés Speedy delivery El Corte Inglés has thrown down the gauntlet to on-line shopping giant Amazon by extending its ‘delivery in under two hours’ service in the run up to Christmas and the Three Kings festivities. The national department store chain has extended its Click&Express online shopping service to almost all its centres so that customers can enjoy almost immediate delivery of goods, within a two-hour timeline, to suit the customer. From Friday onwards this service is now available in 53 towns and cities across Spain, covering over 830 postcodes and a total of 18 million people. El Corte Inglés becomes the first company to offer this online service in all the main Spanish cities, a direct challenge to multinational Amazon, which recently introduced its Prime Now service in Madrid and Barcelona. El Corte Inglés clients have the choice of over 150,000 products in the company's virtual catalogue, including fashion, accessories, perfumes, cosmetics, homeware, technology, electrical appliances, and Gourmet Experience products, and they can have their chosen goods delivered to their home within two hours of placing the order, or delivered in a pre-determined time slot of their choice. The store emphasised that product availability would vary from place to place and according to stock levels at the time of ordering. The most popular products on the Click&Express service are mobile phones, laptops, tablets, wines, spirits, beer and other drinks, Club del Gourmet products, cameras, video games, electrical appliances and small household goods. Customers will be able to see the status of their order at all times thanks to a real-time geo-location system. The service will cost 7.90 euros per delivery, including in the Canary Islands.

SPAIN RESCUES MORE MOROCCAN MIGRANTS Rescue vessels picked up 64 migrants including 11 women and two children recently on two boats that were adrift for a day between Morocco and Spain. Officials said that this was just the latest such operation. A navy rescue plane had been searching for a makeshift boat which had set off from the northern Morocco coast not far from the Spanish enclave of Melilla. After finding it the spotters then also noticed a second one.

All the migrants, who appeared to be in a reasonable state of health, were handed over to the Red Cross in the south-eastern port of Almeria, Spain’s sea rescue service said. Last Saturday, 92 migrants were rescued off the Spanish coast in several operations. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) says 5,445 migrants arrived by sea in Spain between January and September, while 62 people died while making the crossing.

New buses for Guardamar The Town Hall of Guardamar del Segura and Autocares Costa Azul, S.A. have presented two new buses to cover the towns urban transport service. From tomorrow, Wednesday 14th, the new vehicles will be in service offering passengers more seating than the old buses and also providing a platform system for people with reduced mobility. The old vehicles were in service for thirteen years, and so the new vehicles will reduce CO2 emissions.

Mayor José Luis Sáez and Councillor for Public Services Management, Ana Martínez, were on hand to inspect the new vehicles witht eh Mayor explaining that ‘the City of Guardamar and Autocares Costa Azul continue supporting urban transport fit for all members of the public. discovered on 9th December by the Acciona beach cleaning service. The dolphin was an adult male bottlenose dolphin and there were no external signs to suggest the cause of death. Going on the swelling of the body and the internal decomposition it had been dead for several days in the sea and had been washed up by the stormy seas in the last few days. The beach cleaning service had put into operation the protocol for such a find. A biologist attended the scene to establish details of the dolphin which was then buried according to regulations. Groups of bottlenose dolphins are not unusual off the coast of Torrevieja. On occasions, they can even be seen from the land. This isn’t the only marine life to have been washed to shore in 2016. Altogether there have been three washed-up dolphins, including a new born, and two turtles. Suzanne O’Connell

The money was raised in several ways. They raised 1,100 euros towards the grand total. On Sunday there was a huge, grand prize raffle organised by Johnson’s Supermarket which raised a further 910 and people also made donations on the day as did the businesses. There wasn’t a spare seat as regulars and locals flocked to eat, drink and be merry…all in aid of a good cause of course. Some of the children from the Elche Home also went along to have fun at the event and were entertained by Graeme Mykal who wowed them with his magic and made models from balloons for them and the other children at the event. We are destroying the Mar Menor The Mar Menor is Spain’s largest saltwater lagoon. It is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by La Manga and four towns border it; Cartagena, Los Alcázares, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar. For decades it has attracted tourists and visitors due to its warm, clear water. But the Mar Menor has a fragile ecological system, one that environmentalists have warned is at risk for the last eighteen years. In 2013 scientists from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography monitored the contaminants entering the Mar Menor via the rambla at Alabujón and they found 70 different types of pollutant. Now, it looks as though their unheeded warnings have proved to be true. Most noticeable, over the past two years the Mar Menor has turned from a clear blue lagoon into what some have described as thick pea soup. Martin Hutchinson, environmentalist, was recently in Torrevieja as part of his tour around Europe, drawing attention to environmental problems. The contamination and destruction of the Mar Menor is now on his agenda. The green appearance of the lagoon is caused by algae, phytoplankton, the growth of which is preventing sunlight from reaching the bed. Without sunlight, the reeds on the bottom of the lagoon cannot survive. It has been reported that 85% of the vegetation on the lagoon bed has now died. The ecologist organisation ANSE and the national oceanographic institution

have investigated what’s going on there. They discovered that vast amounts of vegetation have been wiped outand you can see the result of this on YouTube. The difference between the bottom of

its way into the lagoon through the ramblas. Excessive building and the tourist industry have also destroyed some of the natural processes which have kept the Mar Menor such an attraction over the years. During his tour, Martin Hutchinson interviews different people, some of whom suggest that attempts to rid the area of jellyfish have also taken their toll on the local ecological balance.

What can be done?

the Mar Menor in 2014 and 2016 is astonishing. Whereas video footage shows that in 2014 the seabed was still full of plant life, in 2016, it is a completely different picture with very little plant life or coverage of any kind at all.

What’s to blame? The prime culprit would seem to be the pesticides which have found their way into the lagoon from local farmland through the ramblas. The pollutants are a mixture of insecticides in the summer and herbicides in the winter. This is not the only reason, however. The Mar Menor is a saltwater lagoon whose ecosystem is highly sensitive. Salt water is being filtered by local farmers to irrigate the land and the brine solution along with chemical fertilisers then finds

There are now actions taking place to address some of the issues, including a green filter being placed on the Rambla del Albujón. However, environmental groups believe that there are a number of additional issues that need to be addressed. There are calls for intensive agriculture, which is being blamed for the pesticides,to be stopped. Environmentalists have also asked for building projects to be halted and port activity to stop in order to allow the currents to flow naturally and restore some of the balance that’s been lost. There is growing anger too at local governments, who have been accused of turning a blind eye to the impending disaster, ignoring the warnings of the environmentalists. Whoever and whatever is to blame, it’s evident that drastic action must be taken to help restore the natural balance that once existed here and to restore the Mar Menor to its previous beauty. Callaghan Financial Services. Keeping you up to date with legislative changes to Recognised Overseas Pensions Schemes 70% Rule Abolished, with the potential of full access before 55. Following the Chancellor’s recent Autumn Statement the draft Finance Bill 2017 was published on 5th December. The draft legislation contains more information on the proposed changes to Overseas Pension Schemes which are summarised below. Taxation of foreign pensions – The tax treatment of foreign pensions and lump sums will be more closely aligned with that of UK registered pension schemes for UK residents. This means that a foreign pension is taxed in full in the hands of a UK resident member instead of 90% of the payment being taxable. Section 615 Schemes – It will no longer be possible to establish Section 615 pension schemes. These arrangements were tax efficient for UK companies with employees performing duties outside of the UK. Five year member payment charge rule to be replaced with a ten year rule – Currently the member payment charges only apply if the member is UK resident when the payment is made or had been UK resident in any one of the 5 previous tax years. This rule will remain in place for pre 6 April 2017 transfers from registered pension schemes to QROPS. In relation to transfers made on or after 6 April 2017, a new 10 year rule will apply under which the member payment charges will apply unless the member is non UK resident when the payment is made and had been non UK resident for the 10 previous tax years.

70% rule removed – Currently QROPS based in certain jurisdictions must ensure that 70% of the pension fund is applied to provide a lifetime income for the scheme member. This rule is to be removed as a requirement to meet the Overseas Pension Scheme (OPS) conditions. Instead the pension scheme must be regulated as a provider of personal pension schemes if the scheme is not an occupational pension scheme. If the provider is not regulated and is not based in an EEA state it will not meet the conditions to be a QROPS. Summary The proposed changes come as no surprise and seek to equalise the tax treatment of overseas pension schemes with UK registered pension schemes for UK residents or short term non-UK residents. QROPS will remain an attractive option for long term non UK residents which is in keeping with HMRC’s policy intent. The removal of the 70% lifetime income rule will allow more QROPS jurisdictions to offer flexible benefits in line with the UK regime. However, this is subject to the enactment of any necessary changes in local legislation and also meeting the new regulatory condition. Some QROPS jurisdictions may need to implement a more robust regulatory framework in order to continue to meet the qualifying conditions. WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Much of the talk last week surrounded the Italian referendum and although the referendum result had been fairly widely anticipated, there had been doubts that Prime Minister Renzi would carry through his earlier pledge to resign if he lost. This topical conversation continued and to nobody’s great surprise Italians rejected Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's referendum proposals for constitutional changes last Sunday. Investors’ initial reaction was to mark down the Euro on Monday morning. Then, within an hour and a half, they changed their minds and the Euro forged ahead even though Sig. Renzi's resignation increases the political uncertainty in Italy. The other big event in Euroland was the European Central Bank’s announcement on Thursday. The ECB said it would extend for another nine months the quantitative easing programme that was scheduled to expire in March. Although asset purchases beyond that date will be at a pace of €60bn rather than €80bn a month investors saw the news as negative for the Euro. Overall the single currency

weakened by half a cent against Sterling and lost two thirds of a US cent. It shared last place for the week with its forever friend the Swiss Franc. A classic game of two halves saw the Dollar first weaken by two US cents and then claw them back for a net weekly gain of a quarter of a cent against Sterling. It fared better against the Euro, picking up two thirds of a cent. Last Friday’s US employment report was slightly confusing for investors: unemployment fell to a nine-year low of 4.6% as 178k new jobs were created but at the same time average wages fell by -0.1%. The two measures usually move in opposite directions as demand for labour pulls wages higher. Sterling started out well but eventually succumbed to a combination of weak economic data and Brexit sabre-rattling. When investors saw unexpected monthly falls in UK manufacturing and industrial production they forgot about the decent purchasing managers’ index readings for the construction and services sectors that had gone before. Re-emerging jitters about Brexit did not help Sterling’s case. BUSINESS PROFILE

Winter Ball A great night was had by all at the Annual Winter Ball held on Saturday 4th December at La Finca Hotel, Algorfa. The event was in aid of Elche Children’s Home and organised by one of the charity’s ardent supporters, Susan Reader. The event raised 1,025 euros for the charity, which receives no official financial support from authorities. The guests were greeted on arrival by Dave Diggle, who is the Elche Children’s Home volunteer accountant and also part of the Blacktower Financial Management team which sponsored the event. He was joined by Father Christmas (charity volunteer Kevin Hopkins), after all who better to do the meet and greet at a Winter Ball. The tables were adorned with ornate centre pieces provided by Kim Nicholls and whilst enjoying a fine three course meal, guests were amazed by the magic of Graeme Mykal. Throughout the night we were entertained by soul singer

Christmas in Spain - different country, different climate, different traditions. Snow or no snow - it is all good, but some things have really changed. “Dreaming of a white Christmas”: I grew up in Holland. We always wanted a white Christmas, though I can only remember one Christmas when it snowed. In fact, it was more likely to snow on Easter than on Christmas. Usually Christmas was around 0-5°C and rainy, and the romantic image of a sleigh ride, as described in “Jingle bells”, was only to be found on television and Christmas cards. Nevertheless, a white Christmas was the standard of proper Christmas weather. So, if it will not snow on Christmas, then how about a warm Christmas? I was open to the idea long before living in a warm climate became a reality. Here on the Southern part of Costa Blanca there is virtually no possibility of snow for Christmas, but I do not feel like I am missing anything. It is still possible to get into the spirit without snow, or without 0-5°C and rain, for that matter. Some might think it strange to have Christmas with mild weather, but actually the nice weather can be used to enhance the festivities. “Christmas is coming”: Putting up the outdoor decorations here definitely has to be a much more pleasant experience - at least weather wise. You might still have tangled strings of lights, but at least you will not freeze your fingers while struggling with them. “Oh Christmas tree”: Scent is said to be the sense most closely linked to memory. A

natural Christmas tree was always part of my childhood Christmas - no plastic tree which is quite common here. The whole family would spend the better part of a (cold) day at a Christmas tree plantation in search of the perfect tree - which per tradition had to be tall. The real fun part well, only for us children I guess, was to watch my parents, especially my father, struggle to get the tree on the roof of the car to bring it home. Now I am the father, and I still love the scent of a real Christmas tree, but luckily I am not expected to cut down my own tree. Cut trees and living Christmas trees in pots are available all over the country, including here. Other favourite Christmas scents are cinnamon, cloves, and especially oranges - which I now get to pick fresh in the garden. The sight of the oranges on the tree colouring up reminds me that Christmas is near. “The holly and the ivy”: I rarely see true holly around here, but there are many other plants with the red and green combination at Christmas time. Christmas favourites like poinsettia and Christmas cactus will grow outdoors here and bloom at the right time. I really recommend getting some Christmas plants like Christmas cactus, amaryllis, kalanchoe, cyclamen, or poinsettia. These will survive outside for years. I do not recall my family having live Christmas plants - at least not in the garden - but my new tradition is to have some of these outdoor

CostaBlancaPeople December 13th-19th 2016

Christmas plants every year. “Oh, bring us some figgy pudding”: Fig trees grow here like weeds. They are deciduous and dormant at Christmas, but I cannot look at one without thinking of the words to "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". “I saw three ships”: Start your own traditions for Christmas. Do something that cannot be done in a colder climate. We often go to the beach. It is not swimming weather, but it is usually warm and pleasant enough for walking. After opening presents, what do you do, sit around and eat all day? The kids might want to stay inside and play with their new video games, but it is nice to have option of going outside if you

want. You might try a Christmas bike ride or a Christmas round of golf or a family ball game. “Oh, little town of Bethlehem”: Every self-respecting Spanish town has a beautiful and intricately decorated nativity scene definitely worth a look. Please notice the lack of snow in the scene - Bethlehem has a Mediterranean climate, much like ours. What could be more authentic than that? I believe that ultimately, the Christmas spirit comes from inside a person. Outside circumstances just provide cues. ¡Feliz Navidad everyone! Marc Vijverberg

Welcome to the local Rag

G

ood morning, dear readers – this is your local rag speaking: Well, actually it is not. This column does not ever speak for this newspaper – it only speaks for this column. This column is what one might call a “loose cannon.” “The local rag!” have you ever referred to the ‘The Costa Blanca People’ by that name? Some people do; not, I hasten to add, in an offensive manner - but actually by way of a term of endearment. I think the expression goes back to the time when news was written on cloth or parchment. Now to the present: “Nothing changes but the date!”! “Nothing but advertisements!”: “Only rubbish”, can be sometimes heard around pick-up points on a Tuesday morning as people who would give up wearing shoes before they would part with their local paper queue up across the Costa. Like so many other things we enjoy, we take our newspapers for granted. It is only when I had the pleasure of meeting so many people from the various departments did it really dawn on me all the work and expertise involved in getting a newspaper out on time. From the front desk to advertising, to newsroom, to production: From journalists, reporters and photographers deputy editor and editor, all overseen by the director of operations. I marvelled at how all the pieces of the jigsaw come together to create this finished product to deadline. A lot of able people are employed here for you to get this in your hand. Like I said, it got me thinking and wondering; Are local newspapers, or indeed daily papers, under any threat from more modern technology, such as the internet? Could our beloved “local rag” go into disfavour just say, like the art of letter writing? If this were to happen it would be a bad, bad day for society, but I do not think it will. Our newspaper is many things to us. It is our watchdog for what is good and right – best summed up by “The

Skibereen Eagle” with its motto of “Keeping an Eye on Things.” A free press, with freedom of expression is paramount to a civilized society. Down through history, those wishing to exercise oppressive control always set out to control or eliminate the press first. Ok, you can get the latest news and all types of information with the touch of a button on the internet, but there is no substitute for a newspaper. Just the feel of it, as you maybe glance back and forth at headlines, before settling on the sports page or whatever. With the paper you have total privacy and it is the perfect information delivery service. You can return to it again and again and you will read items of interest that you weren’t looking for – unlike the internet, where you just get what you are specifically looking for. How often have you stopped what you were doing to read an old newspaper you found, or got down on one knee to read something which caught your eye from a newspaper spread on the floor? My late uncle Paddy was a great hoarder of everything, especially of “Farmers Journals". Now, when I have time, I leaf through papers of the early seventies and find a newly married couple who are now grandparents or a young boyo with long hair, playing hurling, whom I never knew had hair! There is a great pleasure to be had in old papers, akin to finding an old photo album. In waiting rooms, the paper is left around for others to read and you can drop one in the mail-box to send all the local news to family or friend all over the world. Is it not a lovely little pleasure to take a newspaper to bed or even, pardon the expression, to the toilet? People, eyes glaring at a lap-top, will never be seen turning to the person beside them to announce what they’ve just read, but the man or woman engrossed in the newspaper are always likely to turn round to impart some gem of knowledge to the assembled – or perhaps to complain about some

pretentious, overpaid columnist! You have a better chance of influencing your children to read if you buy your local paper. Your local newspaper is an essential part of promoting community pride and spirit, whilst supporting local reporters and photographers. Reporters go to all kinds of meetings (including long boring ones!) and keep us informed as to what is going on around us. The good, the bad and the mediocre is all there; from the highest achievements to the local court cases; all of life, without exception and I would like to know what percentage of papers are bought solely on account of the sports coverage? There is no doubt but that competition is already here from the internet with regard to advertising. People can sell anything on line and young people, who spend more time on computers than in reading, experiment more with this method. But folks, there is no substitute for a newspaper, for all the reasons I have outlined. You will not like everything you read and you will get differing viewpoints, but your paper is never dull in this country. When you feel strongly about something, don’t be shy about using the letters page – that is your right of reply. I think it was Lord Beaverbrook who said something like; “I may disagree with what you say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it.” It is the role of a columnist to stimulate thought and comment and generally “stir things up”. A columnist, I believe, needs to be contrary and a bit controversial! We hope that in some modest way, this column achieves that goal.

Don’t Forget Another thing about a newspaper is that you never have to ask someone to turn down the volume!

Fake police ring robbed tourists Spanish police have announced that they have smashed a criminal gang who preyed on tourists in Madrid by posing as police officers. Eight suspected members of the gang, all of them Iranian and Pakistani nationals, were arrested on 22nd November, police said, describing a grab-and-run game to take cash, jewellery and smart-phones. The gang would approach tourists and ask to see their documents and wallets “with the pretext of checking to see it they had drugs or counterfeit money,” police said in a statement. “Once they had the wallet in their possession, they would remove the cash or would yank any object of value and flee at great speed.” Police suspect the ring is behind at least 21 robberies carried out in the Madrid region in recent months but say the number is likely higher many victims, visiting Spain briefly, did not file complaints. Among the loot recovered during the arrests in three suburban Madrid homes, included 10 high-end watches, 15 smart-phones, jewellery as well as 1,000 euros in cash. They also seized six vehicles which the gang is believed to have used in their robberies.

Increased tourist spending Foreign tourists spent a total of 68.9 billion euros in Spain during the first ten months of this year, an 8.4 percent increase on their expenditure here over the same period in 2015. According to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics, foreign tourists spent over 67 billion euros in Spain in 2015, a record for the fifth consecutive year, which augurs well for this year's figures. The record expenditure figures for this October were helped by an increase in the number of foreign tourists choosing Spain as a destination, with 67.5 million visiting in the first ten months of the year, a 10.2 percent increase on last year. From January to October 2016, UK tourists were the ones who spent the most (21.1 percent of the total), followed by Germans (14.6 percent) and French (9 percent), whilst the autonomous communities most popular with foreign tourists were Catalunya (where 22.4 percent of tourist euros were spent), the Balearic Islands (18.5 percent) and the Canary Islands (17.9 percent). In October alone, foreign tourists spent 7.305 billion euros in Spain, 16.3 percent more than in the same month last year. The average spend

per tourist currently stands at 1,023 euros, with an annual increase of 4.8 percent, whilst the average daily spend increased by 13.5 percent to 137 euros. The average length of stay for foreign tourists in Spain is 7.5 days, a drop of 0.6 days compared with the average for October last year. The average spend by UK tourists grew 9.3 percent in October (compared with the same month in 2015) and that of the Germans increased by 22 percent, whilst tourists from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) increased their average spend by 11.4 percent (to 138 euros/day) and French tourists reduced their daily expenditure in Spain by 3.5 percent (to 85 euros/day). Package holidays are still the main source of tourist revenue, accounting for 22.4 percent of the total, and showing an 18.8 percent increase on 2015's October figures. 63.8 percent of October's tourism spend went on hotel rooms, up by 15.7 percent. Expenditure by tourists not opting for a package deal increased by 14.8 percent year on year, whilst expenditure by those choosing a package holiday went up by 19.7 percent.

MADRID MEGARESORT The Cordish Companies, a US real estate developer and entertainment operator, is planning to invest at least 2.2 billion euros on a Madrid based ‘mega resort’. The complex will create more than 56,000 jobs – a real boost for the regional economy - the company claimed in a recent presentation. The project includes hotels, restaurants, stores, theaters, cinemas, gaming areas and even a circus. The company has already presented the project to the regional government, which is controlled by the conservative Popular Party (PP) and is now awaiting permits, but said it would not seek any public subsidies or changes to existing Madrid laws, an allusion to an earlier large-scale project by casino mogul Sheldon Adelson that fell through due to his insistence on special tax breaks

and flexibility on smoking laws. Live! Resorts Madrid will be located on a 134-hectare tract of land in Torres de la Alameda, near Alcalá de Henares. The US company confirmed that it has already bought the farmland to make way for the resort, and is awaiting a concession from the regional government. If no other similar project turns up, Cordish could obtain the license “within five to six months.” Once the project is underway, construction is predicted to take “between 18 and 24 months” to get the first phases of the resort up and running. Company representatives said that the administration of PP regional premier Cristina Cifuentes is “very enthusiastic” about the project and has expressed “clear support.” In a press conference held in Madrid recently, the regional premier stated that the project “is looking very good” and added that the company is “solvent, reliable and powerful.” Cordish Vice-President Abe Rosenthal and Joseph Weinberg, managing partner at the Baltimore-based business, said the initial investment is set at 2.2 billion euros, but that figures is expandable to 3 billion euros if the resort is as successful as planned. Promoters are expecting a footfall of five million visitors a year and an economic impact in the range of between 4 and 6 billion euros over the first five years. The heart of the resorts complex is a central square with a hotel, and streets leading out from it lined with shops and restaurants. There are also sports arenas, green spaces, secondary squares and other leisure areas. Funding will come from investment capital and credit, said company representatives. Besides road access, Cordish is planning to build a new train stop to connect the resort with the central Atocha station, a move that will require cooperation from Spanish railroad authorities. Airport links are also in the pipeline.

New leader for Spain’s struggling socialists The Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), which has been running under a caretaker committee since October, looks set to have a new leader before the summer, ending an unprecedented situation for the oldest political party in Spain. Javier Fernández, head of the management team who took over on 1st October after Pedro Sánchez resigned as secretary general, will address a federal committee next month to suggest a national convention in May or June aimed at officially naming a leader. Fernández said he feels that the convention cannot be held earlier because it’s not just about finding a new secretary general, but also about debating the Socialists’ entire political project at a time when many voters have deserted the PSOE for new protest parties. However, there is a growing grassroots movement within the PSOE pushing for the convention to be held much earlier than that. Former secretary general Pedro Sánchez had made a similar demand in September, hoping to secure a renewed mandate for his own strategy against Mariano Rajoy, who was then leading a caretaker government. Despite calls for him to help break the political impasse in Spain, Sánchez was refusing to deliver the government to his rival Rajoy by abstaining at a congressional investiture vote. The abstention camp ultimately prevailed, but the dilemma created a

rift within the PSOE that has yet to

heal. So far, no names have been suggested as possible candidates to succeed Sánchez as the new secretary general of the Spanish Socialists. But many observers are expecting Susana Díaz, the Andalusian premier, to step forward. In late November, Díaz stated that holding both jobs would not be incompatible. In the meantime, the caretaker team is going to great lengths to prove that the PSOE is successfully keeping the PP government in check through active opposition. Since Rajoy was sworn back into office, the PSOE has reached agreements with him on the spending ceiling and minimum salary hikes, but sided with Podemos on a move to repeal the Citizen Safety Law. Last week, Fernández underscored that the PSOE and the PP are not in a de facto governing coalition, dismissing those claims as “conspiracy theories.” Asked whether the Socialists will support the executive’s budget plan, Fernández described that option as “a medieval impossibility.”

SPANISH EDUCATION FINALLY GETS GOOD REPORT If Spain were a school student, it would have spent the last 15 years being told it ‘could do better’ after getting the same mark year after year, that is according to the latest OECD PISA global education survey. The report based on 2015 data shows that on a scale where 500 points is average, Spain achieved a score of 493 for sciences (down 3 points on the 2012 result) and 486 for mathematics (up 2 points). For reading, the score is 496 points (up 8 points). For the first time, Spain has managed to equal the average result of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development member states, many of whose results have fallen. A total of 37,000 15-year-old students at 980 Spanish educational centers took part in the study, with Spain’s regions all providing their own data for the first time. Results show a significant northsouth divide with Castilla y León scoring 519 points for sciences while Andalusia scored 473 points. At the national level, the latest PISA exam, which this time had a strong science focus, showed that Spain is in the same bracket as countries such as the US, France, Russia, Norway and Sweden. However, it is long way behind nations like Singapore, which topped the table with 556 points. Estonia and Finland were the highest-ranked European nations, in third and fifth place respectively. Spain’s Education Minister Íñigo Méndez de Vigo welcomed the results, calling them “very satisfactory.” He said Spain had “bucked the educational trend and now ranked, for the first time in its history, alongside the most advanced countries in the world.” “The teachers deserve the credit. The

ministry counts on to help Spain improve,” said the minister. Progress “has been positive but movement is still slow,” said the OECD Deputy Director of Education and Skills, Montserrat Gomendio, while the organization’s head of the Directorate of Education and Skills said: “The quality of education will never be better than the quality of teachers.” Since the OECD began conducting its PISA studies, Spain has rolled out three different education reforms, while the country has also experienced a serious economic crisis with cuts to the education sector of €7.3 billion in six years. Current total spending is €46 billion. However, the results of Spanish students have changed little as a result. Experts differ when it comes to the value of the results of studies like PISA’s noting it is very difficult to make comparisons between different countries and even between different schools. Key variables include the educational level of parents and the number of students repeating a year. Spain’s Education Ministry blamed the country’s poor results in the previous PISA study, which was carried out in 2012, on the number of students repeating. On this occasion, the number was lower but still close to one in three students and far below the OECD average of 11 percent.

Improved teaching One thing experts do agree on, however, is the importance an issue Spain has never addressed: improving the quality of teaching. All of top performing countries – Singapore, Japan, Korea and Taipei have far more complex teacher training and development systems, as

does Finland. Spain’s political parties agree on the need to tackle the problem: a debate on the issue was begun in 2009, with some critics saying Spain should develop a professional model for teachers along the lines of those applied to doctors. This

debate has stalled but with a new legislature and a new drive in Congress towards a pact on education, this could change. In the wake of the latest PISA results, there have been renewed calls for the need for Spanish school students to sit externally assessed exams, something that Gomendio, who was second in charge under former education minister José Ignacio Wert when the ministry draw up plans for its controversial révalidas, or final examinations. Under the proposed changes students would have had to sit two externally assessed exams. But Spanish Prime Ministry Mariano Rajoy put the plans on the backburner after widespread protests, saying he would seek agreement with other political parties before putting the program in place. In Spain there is consensus about the need for student evaluation but critics say the new plans would leave students who fail the exams without a valid school leaving certificate.

Reaching Out at Christmas The Costa Blanca People this week spoke to the President and Board of Trustees of Reach Out Extiende La Mano. The Board wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has helped the charity reach its goals for another year. A spokesperson for Reach Out said, “Without our supporters

both near and far, as volunteers and benefactors we would be hard pushed to carry out the work we do. “Every volunteer no matter how long or short their time at Reach Out, no matter how long they help us whether part time holidays or residents regularly assisting, no matter which department they help in, they are all valued and appreciated for giving up their time and energy to help those less fortunate. We are sure everyone involved in the charity can see the fruits of their labours and for

this the homeless and needy families are thankful.” Reach Out currently looks after approximately 30 families which accounts for nearly 100 people. In addition, the charity cares for in excess of 100 homeless persons both male and female, between 18 and 80 years of age. The registered homeless people helped by Reach Out can benefit from the charity’s comedor producing breakfast, and approximately 60 meals at lunchtime. Volunteers are always needed as the Charity receives no government

assistance, the main source of income is through the shops in Calle Bella Antonia and Calle Dona Sinforosa. Benefactors ranging from personal coin collections, to events in Cafes and Bars, to corporate assistance, help maintain the high standards Reach Out aims to keep at the centre. The charity spokesperson told the Costa Blanca People, “At this festive season we hope to encourage more volunteers to come forward and spend some time with us. Every little helps! We are looking forward to Christmas Day when we will be able to provide our homeless friends with a delicious roast dinner and Christmas gifts. We have a number of volunteers set to help us on the day with local chefs giving their time for free to cook for us, as well as volunteers to help dish out and clear away.”

Deliberate Psychic Attack This is the worst kind and can destroy the quality of people's lives as the person sending the attack can create spells via witchcraft or open inter dimensional doorways such as portals to send harmful energies to a family or another person. This makes the attacker feel powerful in the wrong way, without realising the karmic affect of their actions. It's the same story as always. What you put out, you get back.....

back at you' for something, and they feel anger towards you so they do what they do best - they suck the life out of you. Possible symptoms of psychic attack Loss of energy Diminishing Aura Fatigue Sleep disturbances Depression Physical illness Feeling unfocused Feeling disorientated Feeling as if there is a dark cloud following you around Feeling Nauseous Feelings of worry, doubt, or guilt interrupting your day Tightness in the chest or feeling as if you can't breathe properly

What type of people are Psychic Vampires You have probably met a Psychic Vampire at least once in your life. Mostly, they have extremely low self esteem, often having feelings of rejection in their past. Because of this, they can't, and won't, let go. They gain power by telling you about all the negative things that happen to them. They need constant reassurance, but no matter how much you try to help them, they won't move on as it's easier for them to bombard you with their baggage than to put any work in themselves. It could be that they want to 'get

How to protect yourself from Psychic Attack • Be aware of who is attacking you and either limit or completely distance yourself from that person. • Redirect your thoughts. Don't get sucked into their drama. Visualise yourself doing something positive and hold that visualisation. Do not allow the psychic vampire to enter your thoughts • There is power in numbers, so ask your friends, spirit helpers and guides to send you healing and positive vibes

PSYCHIC ATTACK What are the symptoms of Psychic Attack If you feel physically and emotionally drained, have lost sight of your goals, if you feel depressed, or anxious all the time and if you have lost faith in your own abilities with their being neither rhyme nor reason for any of this, then you could be under psychic attack. However, people who suck the energy out of others are not always consciously aware that they are doing so. It could be that they are, through the means of telepathy, sending you negative emotions which over time affect you mentally, physically and emotionally. Remote Psychic Attack I call this 'Long distance psychic attack'. When a psychic vampire psychically attacks you, it could be that you are the foremost in their mind. Believe it or not, they may hold you in high esteem, but as they think about you when they are in toxic emotion mode, they will literally suck the energy from you which makes them feel energised, and leaves you feeling depleted. The Stalker Another form of psychic attack is when someone 'stalks' you by constantly ringing texting or e-mailing you. They will tell you how bad they feel about something that has usually happened in the past. They go into great detail, leaving no stone unturned about how bad their life is and how nothing good happens to

them. They will often repeat negative patterns in their life and just by engaging in this negativity or reading their messages, can make you feel utterly fatigued whilst they will feel energised. This is NOT a fair exchange of energy as they will have literally sucked the life out of you.

• Stay away from people who undermine you or make you feel depleted. Whether they are so called friends, acquaintances or even family. Distance yourself! • Don't retaliate. That is what the vampire wants. They are exposing what they feel is wrong in their life - don't allow them to push this onto you. • Create a sacred space in your home such as an Angel Altar and smudge each room • Be mindful, and ever in the moment. Something a Psychic Vampire will never be. • Remember to ground yourself and protect your aura by bringing in the white light. You will need to do this every day • Visualise surrounding yourself with a 'Psychic Cloak' Blue for protection, Green for Healing, Pink for Love, White for Purity, Yellow for Upliftment. • Wear healing protective crystals or amulets such as Black tourmaline, Kyanite, Amethyst, Moldavite, Bloodstone, Black Obsidian, • Wear a St. Christopher Pendant, or Crucifix • Create Holy Water and bless yourself with it. • Place symbols of protection around yourself and your home such as Buddha's, bamboo plants, four leaf clovers etc. • Positive Affirmations • Meditation and/or prayer.

A picture is worth 1,000 words - or 54% more leads according to Kyero.com The phrase 'A picture is worth a thousand words' originated in America and has been used frequently in the US press since the 1920s. It remains true to this day and is particularly relevant to those wishing to advertise a product or service, where both space to advertise and time to catch potential customers' attention are limited. New research from leading Spanish property portal Kyero.com has emphasised the continuing relevance of images to convey messages. Kyero.com lists more than 200,000 properties each month and analyses buyer enquiries in great detail in order to have a thorough understanding of what it is that buyers want and need. Richard Speigal, Head of Research at Kyero.com, explains, "Viewed through this lens, it quickly becomes obvious that the best looking properties generate the most buyer enquiries. For busy local realtors, it's easy to think it won't hurt to cut corners on photography and sales descriptions. However, our research shows that realtors who go the extra mile on presentation generate 54% more leads. Over a year, that

adds up to a lot of extra sales." According to Chartbeat, the average viewer spends fewer than 15 seconds on a website. The stark figure is based on a survey of mainly media sites, but nonetheless highlights the difficulty of grasping viewers' attention in a fast-paced online world. An outstanding image can certainly make a difference, particularly in the context of a portal, where buyers are scrolling through lists of many similarly sized and located properties. The one with the attention-catching image is the one that can generate 54% more leads, according to the Kyero.com research. Kyero.com is working closely with the real estate agencies who present their properties on the site to ensure that such feedback is available to help them improve their services, at the same time as maximizing their pool of potential enquiries. Head of Research Richard Speigal continues, "Kyero's lead in the international market has made us an easy choice in areas popular with buyers from overseas, such as Alicante and Marbella. We provide agents in these areas with an instant

stream of leads. There are also side benefits. Our growth came from a very early decision to operate in 13 languages (a difficult technical challenge) and all our agents get the benefit of turnkey translation systems. This is unique to Kyero, and crucial for agents who are looking beyond the domestic market." When it comes to photography, the message is simple: tell a story. Every property is unique and a good photographer will be able to capture the particular charms of each home. Whether it's a townhouse with a first-floor pool or a villa with outstanding coastal views, an image that captures the lifestyle that the property promises is one that will resonate most deeply with those seeking a sun-kissed second home. Kyero.com's Richard Speigal concludes, "You have so little time to capture a viewer's attention online. Superb photography is one way to do it. The right image can make you stand out from the crowd and may well make the difference between a buyer enquiring about your property rather than someone else's."

Now in its 63rd year, the show recognises the standout achievers and relives the must-see sporting moments in front of a 12,000 strong crowd at Birmingham's Genting Arena. There are 16 contenders shortlisted for the main Sports Personality of the Year Award, and the result is determined by a public vote. December 13th - 19th 2016

A

s you read this I will be in my hospital bed hopefully recovering from an operation. There are so many great acts to go and see this week that I do hope that you will go and see what I can’t. On Wednesday you must get over to Quesada to see the first performance in the area from two epic acts that have formed a duo. Richie Alexander and Dougie Monroe will be taking a tour through the 80’s as their new act RAnDM. Previously only see in the La Florida area the duo are looking forward to showing the folks of Quesada a whole new side to their talents. Friday top pick has to be funny man Justin Sane who will be tickling the funny bones of the folks of San Miguel at The Black Bull. I was lucky enough to be at the opening night of the newly re-opened bar and was delighted to see it not only sparklingly clean and bright, but chocked full of supportive residents of all nationalities. On Saturday the entertainment continues with midlands funny lady and cracking vocalist Angie McKay. Anything could happen with both of these acts and I am gutted to be missing them. Another newly opened bar The Med in El Raso is doing rather well. The creative décor, good food and quality entertainment all add up to the bar being the “go to” place in El Raso. This Friday is the turn of Rob Sweeney (former lead vocalist of Strikland) to delight the locals with his Buble tones and charming nature. You can’t help but fall in love with Rob who is a true gentleman with an outstanding voice and range. Over in Lo Crispin at La Bodegueta on Saturday it is the much awaited return of the amazing guitar/vocalist Steve Delaney. He will probably be happy I won’t be there to make him do his party trick – playing the guitar on his back. I truly never get bored of seeing him do that. Speaking of not getting bored – Monday Richie Alexander will be back at the Club, Quesada. If you have not experienced this very special atmosphere on a Monday afternoon, you have been missing out. With full dance floor and a devil may care air to the afternoon, it is probably the most fun you can have on a Monday anywhere – and still be home in time for tea! Finally, if any acts would be kind enough to do a spot on Boxing Day afternoon please contact me for this charity fundraising event. Email – letsrockshowslive@gmail.com for more details. Thank you.

message “there is insufficient storage to install this app” even though I haven’t downloaded anything. I don’t have that many photos (maybe 30 to 40) and I really only use the tablet for chatting on Skype and a bit of internet searching. Aunty says: This download could be absolutely anything Sue, possibly a system update from Android or an app update for Skype or Chrome etc. I’m assuming you have a basic knowledge of finding your way around your tablet. Normally

hopefully you will clear enough space to install the free Clean Master app from the Play Store. If you don’t already have an SD memory card then invest €10 in a 16GB micro SD card and then use the Clean Master app to help relocate data and apps from the (full up) internal memory to the new (empty) SD card.

Jeremy via email asks; Hello Aunty, I’ve started using Google Chrome Instead of Firefox and it is a lot better but when I start it, it comes onto Google España and most of my search results come back in Spain. I guess that as I am in Spain, Chrome is showing me Spanish websites so what do I need to do to change everything into English? Aunty Says; Hi Jeremy. You are correct that Chrome is looking at your location (via Region Settings or your IP address) and assuming you want everything accordingly. To change this, start Chrome and click on the three small dots in the top right corner and click on ‘Settings’ This will bring up a new page and under the ‘On Startup’ section you can tell Chrome to “Open a specific page or set of pages” where you can enter google.co.uk. You can also control what the Home Button will do under the ‘Appearance’ section and if you click on the ‘Manage search engines’ button you can edit the entry to google.co.uk. I always get varying results when I do this so let me know how you get on and we can maybe try changing your Regional setting. Sue via email asks: Hi Aunty. I know you mostly sort out Windows computer problems but I’m hoping you’ll be able to help me with my Samsung tablet problems as I’m at my wits end. I keep getting an error

removing any unused apps and clearing out some cache will fix this but it can be very fiddly. There are a couple of free apps that you can download that will save you hours of time but first you’ll need to free up a small amount of storage to allow the app to download and install. Go to “Settings” and then “App Manager” and go through the list of apps and click on “Clear Data” and “Clear Cache”. Do this for 4 or 5 apps and

Paul via email asks: Dear Aunty, I was given a second hand laptop with Windows 7 which runs fine and I only really use it for downloading and playing music for my bar. The only problem that I am having is that the hard disk is small at 80GB and I have pretty much filled it up and occasional get a warning message that the C: is full. Is there an easy and cheap way I can upgrade the hard drive? I don’t want to spend too much money as the laptop is a bit old and tatty. Aunty Says: Hello Paul. You can replace the laptop’s hard disk drive but it will be a huge amount of work reinstalling Windows + all of your data/programs. You will be far better off buying a 1TB USB external hard disk for around €65 which you simply plug into a spare USB port and it will appear on your computer as a new drive letter. Any questions, you can email me at: auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and hopefully see you all next week.

Woman blamed for Columbian crash seeks asylum Celia Castedo, the Bolivian aviation agency inspector who Bolivian officials say authorised the departure of the Lamia plane that crashed a week ago in Medellín killing 71 people, has asked the Brazilian Police and Public Prosecutor's Office for asylum. Castedo is wanted by Bolivia’s attorney general’s office for “failure to fulfill duties and an attempt against the security of the flight.” She faces up to four years in prison. But Brazil's O Globo newspaper reported that Castedo has been in the Brazilian city of Corumbá, near the Bolivian border, where she lived and where the flight took off, since last week. A Few days earlier, media outlets had reported that Castedo had examined the aircraft before take-off and found that it did not have enough fuel to make the journey from Santa Cruz to Medellín. However, Bolivian aviation authorities say they did not receive such warnings and that the inspector concocted them the day after the accident to cover up her negligence. Yet, her colleagues say “there were witnesses.” Milton Claros, Bolivia’s public works minister, said his government has not had any official notification of Castedo’s request for asylum and that he will comment when he receives it. Before learning she was in Brazil, the Bolivian air traffic controllers’ union expressed its support for her and rejected calls for a legal investigation.

This is a high profit ratio business to the right husband and wife team with get up and go. Rent is 500 euros a month, equal to 20 euros per day, assuming a 5 and half day working week. Reasonably priced at 20,000 euros to include all fixture, fittings and many years of goodwill. Reason for sale, owner wishes to retire. Rurally located in 8,330m of land, with building of over 550m plus garage block. This property now has planning for use as a bed and breakfast business. Without any further construction, but with 2 walls inside the property being moved and one wall added, this property would make 8 en suite bedrooms, and a further 2 Motel style rooms, thus making 10 letting rooms. Plus enormous farmhouse kitchen, living room, dining room suitable for up to 20 covers, plus swimming pool, full oil fired central heating, mains water, electric, wifi, landline telephone, and a further 5,000m of land we have never used in almost 17 years! Buy this shop and become the landlord with a 10% return for an investment of 120,000 euros. No bank can match this opportunity? Why receive peanuts on your money in the bank, when you could receive 12,000 euros per year? You become the owner, landlord, and once a month you collect the rent of 1,000 euros? Not exactly rocket science or hard work either. Further details contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 275 out of hours. Quesada, lock up bar restaurant lease for sale. Your week in sport CD Torrevieja 0-1 Paterna ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

might have found another good batsman. Other than that, same old same old. India score more runs than us and their spinners take more wickets than ours. Come home boys, the game is up.

So, Russia doped over 1000 athletes and cheated their way through London 2012. That’s ok then, they are bound to have been the only country doing it, aren’t they. I mean, god forbid any country that isn’t Russia gets dragged into the scandal. Or has anything swept under the carpet. As long as they have the appropriate doctor’s note and ride a bike everything is ok. But hey, it means a few Team GB athletes might move up the medal table. In a totally unrelated demonstration of British Cycling being able to make things go away, Jess Varnish’s complaints against Shane Sutton got narrowed down to one small thing being upheld and several other big things being refuted. The PR machine had suggested back in October that Sutton had been found to have used “inappropriate language and behaviour” but last week’s leak on the actual report suggested that of all the instances claimed, only one was found to be “true” in the eyes of the “independent” committee. That press release seems fair then. England will just about want to pack up and come home following being led another merry dance in the 4th Test in India. We might have found another good batsman in South African Keaton Jennings. Well, if we forget his ridiculous name and focus on the first innings ton and not the second innings duck we

La Siesta Bowls Club Cracking Result for the Apollos beating El Rancho Pintos at home by 150 shots to 60 gaining 12 points to their opponents 2 keeping the team at the top of the table. Best result came from Irene Laverick, Ramsay Sinclair & Brian Gardiner 38 - 6 leading from start to finish and after 9 ends the score was 24-1 .Dawn & John Taylor and Harold Chareleton also won 30 - 5. Closely followed were Barbara Jack & Jean Cooper winning 28 - 5,another team which lead from beginning. Sheila Chorley, Trish and Pat Reilly won 20 - 10 coming from behind on the 9th end picking up 15shots on the last 9 ends. Finally Ann & Robert Heath with Brian Fraser won 20-15. Not such good news for the Pioneers who lost by 123-79 to Emerald Isle Moonrakers on a very heavy green. The sole winners were Dennis Andrew, Penny Porter and Rab Logan 21-14. 12 points go to Emerald Isle and 2 to the Pioneers. Two Winter League matches this week both resulting in 12-2 defeats. The first on Saturday away at Quesada by 120 shots to 77. The winning rink was Barbara Cooper,Tony Campbell,George Richardson and Jean Cooper who held on to win 16-15. On Wednesday our visitors Greenlands won by 89 shots to 87 with Janet Charman,Trish Reilly,Tony Dalton and Brian Gardiner winning for La Siesta by an excellent 34-12. The Blues travelled to El Rancho Mustangs and on a green which most visiting teams find tricky this was no different for La Siesta who lost 14-0 with a shots scoreline of 67-138. The Golds were away at Horadada Royals and lost 10 points to 4 with a score difference of 77-126.Winners for the Golds were Hilary Clarke,Fred Charman and Tony Dalton 25-16 and Ron Sheldon,Val Dalton and Sid Gallup 16-13

Anthony Joshua danced around Eric Molina in Manchester on Saturday night to defend his IBF title. Joshua will be rewarded with a date with Klitschko in April 2017. The best fight of the night saw Chisora beaten by Whyte in 12 rounds. Following the press conference pantomime that saw Whyte throw an actual table at Chisora there were no titles on the line, just a bucket load of pride.

Torry resembled an eager pupil trying to please the teacher with the right answer, hand in the air, urging "Miss,Miss,Miss!". The chances they created in the second half were too numerous to count. They hit the side netting, they were denied a goal by the linesman's flag, the keeper saved with his legs when he had no idea whee the ball was, headers flashed inches wide and all in all it was frustrating and ultimately most concerning. The concern at the end of the game centred around striker Lewis Allen, who once more run himself ragged and played with his usual fearlessness. He took worrying knocks to the head in both halves and at the conclusion of the match had to be held up by staff as he appeared to faint and when questioned had no recollection of the game. The ambulance whisked him to hospital for a cat scan and kept him in overnight as a precaution. Fans can check on his progress and well being on the club's website / C.D. Torrevieja - Web oficial or on the Torry Army Facebook page. Duco scored the only goal of the game in the 27th minute. He made a dart in the box to get his head on the end of a cross whilst all the Torry defenders stood and watched. The manager was furious and this defensive "sleeping" has now become a part of Torry's character. At the start of the second period, Pedreno sacrificed central defender Pecha for Mattheus and he certainly added much more sparkle to Torry attacks. Along with Lewis, Damian and the ever consistent Luis Carlos, he skated down the left flank, taking on defenders and getting them in a blue funk. However, no matter how often Torry got into exciting positions to score, it

simply wouldn't happen. From the stand strikers Pastor and Hugo were perplexed, eager to be on the pitch to remedy the malaise. Both are likely to return to action in Borriol this coming weekend, but it is hard to see how the manager will accommodate them, as the majority of strikers played well. It was just not their day. Robles and Soto try hard and both had started the game in Crevillente midweek where Torry fought back to level the scores from a two goal deficit, only to concede from a corner to lose 3-2. Robles retained his place in the starting line up, but Soto made his customary appearance as a substitute. Both struggled to make an impact. Buba also looked dazed after he had clashed with his own defender Calzado and actually came off the pitch after

treatment with Lucas ready to replace him. However, Buba insisted on continuing and Lucas still awaits his debut. Torry has now gone six consecutive games without a win and have two away games left in 2016. This weekend at Borriol, who sit immediately above them in the table. Then a midweek tie at Almoradi before the Christmas break. These matches must produce wins if Torry are to rest peaceful over the holiday period and enjoy the festivities Team: Buba, Vicente Boix C, Luis Carlos, Calzado, Pecha (Matheus 45’), Martín, Damián, Buza, Lewis, Carrasco & Robles (David Soto 79’) Jeff Scott Vice president CD Torrevieja

Lewis injured after head clash

CAPTAIN MARVEL The Member’s DOES IT AGAIN Golf Society Zinedine Zidane is something of a psychologist, and after all the publicity about their finances, decided to rest his key players, Ronaldo especially, before their trip to Japan for the club world championships. So it was a much weakened Real Madrid side that ran out to face Deportivo, and the first half gave no clue of what was to follow. Soon after the break, though, Morata curled in a precise shot to beat Tyton at the far post. But then two horrible defensive lapses allowed the Galician side to take the lead. Zidane brought on young Mariano, who promptly equalized, using a somewhat fortunate shoulder, and it looked like being all square, until stoppage time when who should pop up but, inevitably, Sergio Ramos, heading home Toni Kroos’s corner to keep the ‘Merengues’ six points clear, and register their 35th game without defeat – a new record. Earlier Barcelona had easily beaten struggling Osasuna 0-3, Messi twice on target to take him into the lead in the scoring table. Then Iborra helped himself to a hat-trick as Sevilla beat Celta by the same score, to go just a point behind Barça in third place. Valencia were again beaten, but put up a better show against Real Sociedad, losing only by the odd goal in five. Español then spared them the indignity of dropping into relegation territory when they beat Sporting 2-1. Granada fought out a draw at Málaga, and the clashes between Leganés and Las Palmas, and Alavés and Eibar also resulted even. In the second division Levante scraped a one-nil win over Tenerife to stay four points clear with a game in hand, their closest rivals, Girona, going down to determined Alcorcón. Locals Elche came back from two down against Getafe to earn a draw and stay in mid-table. Down

in division 2B, group 3 is still being led by Barcelona B and Alcoyano, separated by only one goal, whilst Hercules have now moved into third place after a good 0-2 win over Mallorca B. In England, Chelsea are flying high, and lead by three points after beating West Brom 1-0. The same score saw Manchester United beat Spurs, but second place belongs to Arsenal, who beat Stoke 3-1. West Ham gained a meritorious draw at Liverpool, and Leicester’s 4-2 win over Manchester City could be a sign of their revival, or City’s slump? England were completely outclassed by India in cricket’s Bombay test match, having inexplicably picked four seamers. (Sir Geoffrey spoke of the need for psychiatric treatment) It didn’t much matter, anyway, India’s spinners were better than England’s, by a country mile, and the batting of Virat Kohli, Murali Vijay, Sereshwat Pujara and company was a joy to behold. Today’s format was just a straight forward Stableford and with the said conditions everyone was expecting the scoring to be high. Alas it was a lone Viking who was the only member to break par and Ove Cederberg’s 37 points won him top spot on the podium in the Gold category. For last months’ visit due to the reseeding the tees were forward, today they were back on the main tee boxes and it’s clear to see that the extra distance did have an effect on the Silver and bronze category N.T.P. Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Goals! Goals everywhere! Well, on Saturday anyway. Watford and Everton showed Manchester City the way forward, the way forward being how to defend like complete schoolboys. Not even schoolboys that have played football, the schoolboys that used to stay inside at lunchtime and play on the BBC computers. And goalkeepers? Don’t get me started on goalkeepers this weekend.

header over Lee Grant to add at least another £100k a week to his contract demands as he will suggest that he can now score all types of goals. A little side note. I’m running a sweepstake on how many hours will pass between you reading this and José commenting on how Arsene is allowed to put his hands on the 4th official without getting into trouble and he gets a one-match ban for toe punting a water bottle. Who wants to play? Pep, Pep, Pep. When you have been 40 down to a team barely bothered about

Watford and Everton very much set the tone of day, sharing five goals between them and easing Ronald Koeman towards a press release where his owners say something like, “yeah we don’t trust you with that whopping January transfer budget we were talking about when you were winning matches.” My prediction of Everton finishing top six looks as well guided as most of my predictions. People thought Arsene was mad for not playing Xhaka earlier in the season. Arsene had suggested he had question marks over Granit’s discipline during a game, and following his elbow to the face of Joe Allen in the area I cannot see what Wenger was worried about. Stoke momentarily looked like they might finally get something out of a trip to the Emirates until Theo earned himself that coffee machine he has been dreaming about. You would imagine if Tony Pulis’s Stoke had ever conceded a header to Mesut Ozil that the current WBA manager would have done quite a lot of naked headbutting after the match. Not under Mark Hughes, he is too busy trying to get Stoke playing all pretty. Ozil floated a

ABBEY ANGLING We fished this year’s Xmas Contest at the El Bosquet Complex on the 29th November With the recent rain the back channel was not fishable as the road was impassable, as one fisherman unfortunately found out a couple of days earlier as he was stranded for around four hours until help arrived to tow him out. So we had to peg the lake, which did produce the third place winner on the day. Lennie Bolton has now returned and took the top place with over 23kgs, and maggot now seems to be coming into its own. After the match we had the prize giving and a splendid buffet at the

defending their title and you have pretty much given their two out of form stars a free pass to regain their confidence you cannot come out in the post-match press conference and say “we defended well.” You didn’t. You really didn’t. Your defending was as shocking as Michael Oliver’s tramlines. I’ve deliberately not jumped on the “Bravo isn’t very good, is he?” bandwagon up until now. The guy has got more chance of saving Private

Ryan than anything heading in the direction of his goal and as for John Stones, well I’d stick Mick Jagger and the rest of the Rolling Stones at the back and they would probably make better decisions. Jamie Vardy could not believe the amount of space he was allowed to sprint into and Mahrez’s 6th successful pass to his striker this season was a beauty. Sure, City put some kind of spin on the final result but they were tortured by the team I am still refusing to call “league champions.” Pep spent more than José in the summer and, arguably, his signings are having a worse time than the likes of Pogba and Mhki. Though, admittedly, there is not as much humour in pointing that out.

to do is start scoring some of the multitude of chances they create and they are going to start closing gaps. Am I saying this to give them the Costa Blanca Chris curse? You can decide, but adding in Carrick, Herrera and Mkhitaryan has suddenly given United the look of a team you don’t want to play, although the Armenian is unlikely to be seen again anytime soon. Dammit José, I was enjoying myself. Smug Al doesn’t need any competition. By the time I next appear on FANTV in the new year I will have to be saying nice things about Mourinho and Pogba as the French midfielder ran the show at Old Trafford. Even Phil Jones looked good.

One thing WBA can do is make a game bad to watch but one thing Conte’s Chelsea appear to be able to do even better than that is nick a win. Just when 0-0 was looking like the result Pulis dreamed of, Diego Costa scored yet another goal to send Chelsea back to the top of the table clean sheet in tact once more. David Luiz won’t be inviting Rondon round for Christmas lunch as the big striker would probably make the defender look silly at the table. The clamour for Chelsea to be deducted points is more daft than likely, but could be the only way the chasing pack could bring Conte’s men back down to earth.

Liverpool’s custodian Karius hit back at his critics following his injury time blunder that gifted Bournemouth all three points last weekend. Gary Neville was the main man in his sights and Jamie Carragher didn’t escape unscathed. The best way for any goalkeeper to get people off his back is to, as Carragher eloquently put it on Sky, “shut up and do your job.” The job of the goalkeeper is, after all, to keep the ball out of their net and anyone who saw Karius’ attempt to stop Payet’s free kick would suggest he needs reminding of that advice. West Ham escaped from Anfield with a 2-2 draw, showing a rare bit of back bone and bottle.

I’m just going to put this out there. United are on the way back. José has brainwashed me, they are unlucky. Mou “superbly man manages” Mhkitaryan into being so hungry to play he is brilliant when given a chance and he gets stretchered off with ankle ligament damage near the end of the win over an abject Spurs side who look lost when they are not given a penalty. All United need

The relegation battle between Hull and Palace gave full marks for entertainment but zero marks for what the “experts” like to call “game management.” Spurs have won some dubious spot kicks in recent weeks, but nothing compares to the one Snodgrass managed to gain for Hull. Laughable is the word, especially if you are in the anti-Al group. A little nod to Gareth Southgate. Wilf Zaha was full of

ABBEY ANGLING We held this week’s open match at Nancy’s on the 6th December after a long absence. It is still as dirty and littered as it ever it was, I was pegged on the inlet where the water runs in at the campsite, and the amount of rubbish coming down was incredible from plastic bottles, dead dogs, kids toy’s, and even bags of rubbish tied up in carrier bags. All of it domestic waste obviously coming from private dwellings; there is just no improvement!! The water was checked the day

before and there was no flow, but on match day it was really pushing through.. The weights were quite good considering the time of year and the lower temperatures, Lennie Bolton drawn on the bottom steps fished the pole using maggot for the top place with just under 13kgs, Kevin Mulligan and Bill Reade sharing 3rd place. 1st Lennie Bolton with 12.740kgs fishing the pole using maggot 2nd Terry Screen with 10.700kgs fishing the feeder using bread Joint 3rd Kevin Mulligan and Bill Reade with 8.920kgs fishing the feeder using bread and maggot There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new website abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368

tricks, skills and end product. He scored one of the goals of the weekend. Andros Townsend, however, mooched his way through 45 minutes of his appearance bonus and was hooked at the break. Guess which one is currently in the England squad. Yeah. That. Straight after Zaha’s wonder strike Smug Al removed his one decent defensive midfielder and put on the creative force that is Cabaye. 90 seconds later Hull had equalised. Another tactical masterclass from Pardew there. Not that he would like us to forget that it was his other sub, Campbell, that scored the injury time equaliser that denied Hull from a much needed win. You might need to work on defending again Al, like every week. Saints beat Boro 1-0 in a match that everyone would forget far quicker if it wasn’t for the quality of Boufal’s goal. David Moyes had said in the week that he hoped Swansea gave Bob Bradley time to sort out Sunderland. I had presumed that was big because Moysey knew that if BB stayed there was a good chance Sunderland would not finish bottom. Also in the week I asked Sunderland to go back to being complete rubbish as it is more fun for me to mock David Moyes. Boy did they deliver for me. Not only did they wear the worst kit I have seen since Scotland played at Wembley, but they put in one of their worst performances of the season - and that is saying something. Swansea pulled them apart, and their second goal was right out of the Darren Anderton/Teddy Sheringham playbook. These American’s coming over with their rehearsed plays. It will never catch on. Who’d have thought it Bob, keep crossing the ball to your big man up front and he will score goals, just like he did for Juventus.

travel, being a total of 280kms the round trip. The water has now started to rise and is up 2-3 foot, and when we arrived the surface was alive with fish topping. Weights were not expected to be high due to the change of temperature, I drew peg 1 on the shallow end, which is an excellent paste peg in the summer but not usually a very good winter peg. Wrong!
