Security alert at Torrevieja Three Kings The traditional Cabalgata or Three Kings parade, took place on the evening of the 5th January to the delight of the waiting children and their families in Torrevieja.
A
s customary, the Kings arrived in the port area to be greeted by large crowds and councillors. The procession wasn’t perhaps as unusual or controversial as last year with the customary Three Kings’ floats, dancers, smurfs, drummers, and other musicians. There were no participating animals, as was also the case last year. Slightly more unusual were the large white butterflies, dragons and seahorses that were carried by people on stilts.The parade finished a
little earlier than usual and perhaps seemed to be shorter than in previous years. For those who couldn’t attend the actual procession, the Three Kings visited the children’s ward of Torrevieja hospital in the morning of the 5th January accompanied by the mayor, José Manuel Dolón and the councillor for fiestas, Domingo Pérez. They handed out presents to those with no option but to spend the night in hospital.
Security alert
In common with major cities across Spain, police were on extra alert to ensure that any risk of terrorist attack by groups or individuals was prevented. A higher police presence was evident around the procession both with additional police cars and armed police officers bringing up the rear along with the cleaning services. The police were informed at 6.30pm of the theft of a lorry only two kilometres from the Plaza de la Constitución. The lorry was stolen in the calle La Sal whilst the procession was taking place and entering calle Ramón Gallud. This raised security to high alert following events in Germany and France. Both the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local were informed of the theft of the Nissan lorry with an old number plate registered in Orense. As a result of the
notification, patrol vehicles of the Policía Local positioned themselves at important intersections of roads that led into the town centre. Fortunately none of the preventative measures needed to be taken. However, the town’s people of Torrevieja will feel reassured that in the event of a threat the police here are organised and ready to take action. The truck was later found burnt out on the outskirts of Torrevieja, its occupants having fled the scene. Controversy. This year’s parade didn’t pass completely without controversy, however. It had been announced that instead of throwing the sweets as traditionally happens during the procession, those taking part must pass them out to the waiting children. BITE SIZE Almoradi residents get on their bike to help NEWS: A pizzeria was destroyed by fire in the area of Los Balcones in Torrevieja on the 5th January. Fire brigades from Torrevieja and Almoradi managed to put out the flames more than two and a half hours after they had been called to the scene. The popular pizzeria, Don Camilo, is situated in the centre of the Los Balcones urbanisation. Fire was declared at around 2 am after the alarm was raised and the owner went to the property to confirm the fire. Fire engines came from Torrevieja and Almoradi to the scene and used more than 25,000 litres of water in order to put it out. The cause of the fire is not yet known. The premises are situated in a commercial area on calle Asunción and include a wood-burning oven and a fireplace in the centre of the dining room. Furnishings and interior decoration are also made out of wood. Other local premises and properties were alerted due to the close proximity of the fire.

young people, adults and children, regardless of age, brought out their bikes, some more modern than others, but all with a very praiseworthy purpose, showing support for Laura. The event, which asked people to pay just 2 euros to register, was organised to
raise funds for little Laura Meseguer, a girl from the town who has a disability that affects her mobility and who needs a special bicycle to be able to practice and take part in her favorite sport. And now, thanks to the kind hearted people of Almoradi she will get her festive wish as the 640 euros raised by the 320 participants will allow the construction of a bike specially adapted to her needs. The day was fun and enjoyable with each participant decorating their bike ranging from classical styles to modern designs with characters or stuffed animals of all kinds. And the costumes were not lacking either with everyone entering into the spirit of the occasion, and the most original creations were awarded a prize. A bike converted into a race car driven by a child took the award for the most original and the prize for the ‘classic bike’ was given to one that carried several strings of artichokes hanging from its frame. The best adorned bike for a girl was scooped by a young lady who was accompanied on the tour by her favorite stuffed animals. As for the best disguise, the bike that had been turned into a crocodile was the most admired and caused the most hilarity. The Sports Department of Almoradí was in charge of organising this event, with the help of the Almoradí Cycling Club, to encourage the use of the bike as an alternative means of transportation for the city as well as raising money for Laura’s new and adapted bike.

Three equines rescued as sanctuary recovers from Christmas flooding
BITE SIZE NEWS:
A donkey cruelly hobbled and left to stand alone without shelter throughout last month’s torrential rainfall is now safe from harm thanks to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC). The Rojales sanctuary rescued the donkey, named Dulce Dawn, on Boxing Day in a joint operation with San Javier police, even as the centre itself battled major flooding caused by a week of wet and wild weather. Dulce Dawn had been found crudely tied to prevent her from moving, with rope wrapping from her head to her front and back legs – a technique known as hobbling. A shocking video depicting the hobbled donkey, posted on the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s Facebook page, has attracted international condemnation.

But she said the couple were buoyed by a show of support, with many kind locals generously donating to help cover the unexpected cost of replacement hay. Just €5 buys one entire hay bale, but many people donated much more, Sue said.

The van, registered in Torrevieja, had been left parked in la Calle Valencia which is adjacent to the beach. However, due to either the breaks failing or not being applied properly, the vehicle broke free, crossed the sand and ended up in the water some 10 metres out from the shore. It stayed there for almost an hour much to the amazement of onlookers. The police were alerted and were able to find the owner who was apparently unaware of what had happened to his vehicle. The van had to be pulled out of the water by a crane and was then taken away by a tow truck. Fortunately there weren’t any bathers in the water at the time.
Improvements planned to the natural park
“This case went far beyond normal hobbling,” said Easy Horse Care co-founder Sue Weeding, who said that the donkey is also possibly in foal. “While a lot of Spanish farmers do tether their horses in fields with rope, they don't normally hobble them and certainly not like this. It was horrendous and barbaric and we suspect it was not even legal.” Just one day later, on 27th December, Sue and her husband Rod Weeding were again called out by San Javier police to rescue another two ponies found wandering down a road in the same area. Check-ups by the vet later revealed the stallion, believed to be about 14 years old, has one deformed hoof, while the mare, about 7 years old, is malnourished and could be in foal – but ultrasound tests conducted on 30th December were inconclusive. Sue said: “It is looking probable that she is in foal but it's difficult sometimes to get an accurate read with the mobile ultrasound. The other possibility is that she has a load of worms, which is why her belly is so big and she looks quite poorly. Our equine veterinarian will do another ultrasound in two weeks to confirm the situation.” The three rescues came as the husband and wife team battled thick mud and used electric pumps to expel water from the fields and stables which were deluged with water in the recent floods. The couple also discovered that the torrential weather had damaged a huge amount of expensive ‘forage’ that they’d bought in from northern Spain to feed their horses over the winter period. “Our hay shelter is simply too small now that we have 102 rescued equines to feed, and although we did

The natural parks of Torrevieja and La Mata are to receive some money to help protect the public pathways. The rights of way have deteriorated due to the frequent passage of cyclists, motorcycles, horses and quad bikes. All these have taken their toll. The plan is to provide wooden fencing to help protect these areas and stop their unauthorised use by these methods of transport. The popularity of the park has grown, but not everyone treats it with the respect it deserves. Another concern has been the use of Lo Albentosa park and the way in which the parking area adjacent to it has sometimes served as a parking space for motor homes.
Coco and Bean find a home Whatever 2017 is doing for you so far, for two local, abandoned dogs it’s turning out to be a good year. Coco and Bean have been living at Torrevieja’s animal shelter (albergue) since being left there in August. Councillor Carmen Morate has been looking for a home for them since then. The two were inseparable and were also both old animals that desperately needed a proper home in which to end their days. Now, we are delighted to announce that the pair have been found a home. Following this success story, Councillor Morate is keen to make sure that others follow their example and that 2017 brings more abandoned dogs and cats the permanent home that they need. Wall collapse Part of a wall belonging to the old Pensión del Parejo collapsed in Calle Azorín on 7th January. The building has been abandoned for many years and the police were informed of its collapse by a neighbour. The neighbour heard a loud rumble and went out to see a great column of dust. The rubble fell inside the building which is in a poor state and includes several dilapidated pillars in its interior. The Local Police attended the incident and made a quick inspection of the inside of the building partly to ensure that there hadn’t been any homeless people taking shelter there. Neighbours did assure the police, however, that this isn’t an area usually frequented by those without a roof. The area has been fenced in and was inspected in more detail on Monday by technicians. The building is protected because it is of historical interest. However, it is in a bad state of repair, is currently filed as a ruin and has recently been purchased by some businessmen.
Adults in the children’s ward at Torrevieja hospital Hospital unions have complained that adults are being admitted on a regular basis into the children’s ward at Torrevieja hospital. Representatives from hospital management have claimed that this happens seldom and only in exceptional cases. However,
staff are claiming that this is not the case but happens regularly and in spite of the fact that there are premises within the hospital that are available when there is additional demand. The European Charter of the Rights of the Hospitalised Child states that ‘all children have the right to be hospitalised with other children, avoiding the possibility of being with adults.’ Management claim that their actions are ‘flexible and adapting resources to the needs of the population.’ Suzanne O’Connell
We might complain sometimes about how long a letter takes to be delivered but not many of us have had one that has been returned after a decade trapped in the postal system. But that’s what’s happened in Torrevieja as a postcard sent by the previous mayor, Hernández Mateo, to a person living in the town has finally been returned to where it was sent from. The postcard, wishing Mr Erik Clasen a happy Christmas, was sent in December 2006 from the town hall in Torrevieja and shows a pretty picture of the Municipal
Theatre at night with a Christmas tree lit up outside. On the reverse is a photo of Torrevieja hospital. The card was sent by Pedro Hernández Mateo, a previous PP mayor of the town who was later sentenced to a jail sentence for corruption. The card had been addressed to a Mr Erik Clasen who lived in Torreta II. It never reached it destination and instead has been doing the rounds to finally return to the source of its original sender at the town hall. Suzanne O’Connell
Whatever the weather Weather forecasters have had a hard time of it recently in Torrevieja. There seems to have been little pattern to the peaks and troughs of el tiempo in recent weeks. With the deluge experienced in the middle of December and now the very mild past few days, it has been difficult for those organising Christmas and New Year activities to be able to predict what will happen. Data recorded by local weather stations situated at various points in the town suggest that over the year there has been rainfall of 278 litres per square metre. In spite of the horrendous rainfall experienced from the 16th to the 18thDecember the town has registered the third driest period since records began in Torrevieja. We might have suffered a recent deluge but this has not eradicated the 138 days without rain,a figure topped only in the years 1946 and 1930 when it didn’t rain for 172 days. As you might expect, the
period with least rain last year was in the summer when a tenth of a litre fell altogether. The rainiest month was in December when 151 litres was registered over a period of three days from the 16th to the 18th December. Since 1931 there has not been as rainy a December as there was last year. Temperature-wise it’s been fairly normal with an average temperature of 19.1 degrees. Over the twelve-month period, five months have been warmer and six have been colder on average, with one being the same. The summer, however, was cooler than in previous years recording 0.6 degrees less in August. June, on the other hand, broke records with a temperature of 37.6 degrees along with September at 36.5 degrees. 2016 will go down as a year of contrasts, at least as far as the weather is concerned. Rojales craft market improved for 2017 Live music, food trucks, workshops, traditional crafts and exhibitions will all be on offer at the new and improved Rojales Sunday craft market, held at the town’s Rodeo Caves. The market is starting the new year with a new look and new ways for visitors to enjoy the first Sunday of every month. This is a unique setting that holds the key to something truly traditional and authentic right on your doorstep. The arts and crafts market began again in January with an effort to revamp the long-established arts and crafts offering that has been located in the town for several years, by introducing new artistic projects. The contemporary art market aims to bring together a series of creative spirits with daring vision, who make everything from clothing to collages and illustrations to photographs. The first market of the year was held at the weekend - Sunday, 8th January - with
the inauguration of a photographic exhibition by Mercedes Fittipaldi held in the Sala Mengolero from 11am. Live activities continued throughout the day from 10am to 6pm. For the youngsters there was mini painting and marionette puppet workshops for them to join in with. For lunch there was a choice of delights from the Food Wagon and Eddy’s Street Food, as well as Carlota’s traditional paella. The art and craft experience runs throughout the network of caves and surrounding area, with most of the design and music along Calle Cuevas del Rodeo. The resident artists’ collective, ArtnGround will host an open studio for visitors every month where there will be a place to experiment with sound and visuals courtesy of Perromágnetico. Visitors will also be able to enjoy live shows with refreshments like artisan beers, organic juices, vermouth or coffee on the patio.

Carnival preparations begin It may only be the beginning of January but already the lead in to February’s carnival has begun in Torrevieja. On the 28th January it will be the coronation of the Queens that will form the opening ceremony. Young women will be selected as part of both the adult and youth categories. Announcements will be made on the evening. The majority of the presentations and performances surrounding carnival this year will be shared between the two venues of the International Auditorium and the Virgen del Carmen Centre. It is unlikely to take place at the Eras de la Sal as happened last year. The Drag Queens’ event will be held on Friday 3rd February. This will be the ninth drag queen celebration, an event that has become renowned for its makeup, high heels and imagination with participants coming from all over Spain. On Saturday February 11th there will be the murgas contest with participants from other areas. Murgas are a form of popular musical theatre performed in
Argentina, Montevideo and Uruguay. The performance is a combination of song
and dance and the performers are usually, but not always, men. On February 7th there will be the children’s carnival dance and an event for the elderly will be celebrated on February 16th. The carnival procession itself will be on Sunday 19th February during the day and the evening carnival procession will be on the 25th February.This is the highlight of the carnival seasonand so far 25 different teams, six groups and three individuals have signed up. There will be three ‘comparsas’ or dance groups from other countries. The procession on the 19th will set off from the Plaza de Mariá Asunción along the Ramón Gallud route until Calle Orihuela. The evening procession will set off at 10pm along the same route but will disband at Patricio Pérez. There will also be two competitions, one for painting and another photography which will take place on Instagram. Hopefully the weather will be kind to the carnival participants this year. IAG plans low-cost flights from Spain IAG, the group made up of Iberia, Air Lingus, Vueling and British Airways, says it will begin operating low-cost flights out of Barcelona to the United States, Latin America and Asia from June 2017. “Barcelona has become an important airport hub,” said a company spokesman, adding that it believes there is significant demand for “these new-generation long-haul flights.” IAG says it is considering two options for new its long-haul routes: to create a new airline, or to pool IAG’s existing resources. “We have not taken a final decision yet,” said company sources. The firm has chosen Barcelona as its hub for this new business segment because this is where its low-cost carrier Vueling is based, and this will allow it to funnel passengers from its extensive European network on to long-haul flights. IAG will use two Airbus A330s, and says the initiative will create 250 jobs. Among the destinations IAG is looking at are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Havana, and Tokyo. “This new operation will add a new dimension to IAG and complement the other airlines in the group,” say company sources. Industry experts say that Vueling is unlikely to be used to operate the routes. Iberia – which has undergone extensive restructuring since the creation of IAG in 2011 to cut costs, involving routes being cut, staff layoffs and salaries reduced – has always been wary of discussing low-cost long-haul routes. IAG’s initiative seems aimed at challenging Norwegian, which has already announced that from June 2017 it will operate low-cost routes from Barcelona to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Newark and Fort Lauderdale.

Bugs on Alicante farms bring orange shortage A plague of bugs is attacking orange groves in the Valencia region, and authorities have warned action needs to be taken ‘urgently’ to prevent a dearth of the fruit this season. Oranges are traditionally picked between November and February, sometimes being left on the trees until March or April to grow larger but generally pass their best before the spring – meaning an insect swarm affecting them now could cause terrific losses for citrus farmers. The Scirtothrips Dorsalis Hood, known commonly as the ‘chilli thrips’, is an invasive species which comes from south-east Asia, the Americas and Africa, and has been detected in orange groves near the towns of Albatera, Callosa de Segura, Cox, Granja de Rocamora and Orihuela, all in the southern part of the province of Alicante. Environmental and agriculture authorities in the Valencia have carried out
inspections on farms and explained what owners need to do in terms of disinfecting, and destroying affected fruit. The chilli thrips cause deformities in the fruit and leaves, causing the orange blossoms to fall off the trees, and blocks the photosynthetic activity in the plant. But the worst effect is the damage the bugs cause to the reproductive organs in the flowers and fruit, which can lead to a loss of harvest and a poor quality in oranges that reach full maturity. Agricultural laws passed in 2002 mean that the landowner, or farmer, is responsible for eradicating infestations at his or her own cost, and to notify the regional ministry. If they do not, as well as losing their own harvest, the farmers could be held liable if the infestation spreads to other people's crops, or those in public areas.

Sign up for Torrevieja’s half marathon If you’re looking for a goal to achieve after the excesses of the festive period why not sign up for Torrevieja’s half marathon or its 10K run? This is the 34th time the run has taken place and it continues to be a popular event in Torrevieja’s calendar. The race will take place on 26th February 2017 and starts at 10am. Those who want to go the full distance and run the half marathon of 21Kdo two laps of the course. It extends all the way from Cala del Gambote at the northern point of the town, down to past the Muelle de la Sal in the south. As the organisers point out, it’s a good way to get to know a little more about your local town. If not perhaps the easiest. Those who opt for the 10K only have one lap to do. It’s a good run as there are few hills and, in most years, the weather has been kind to participants. There are regular water stops on the way which are staffed by volunteers. Registration takes place in the port
area and the event has been well organised in the past. It is a competitive race rather than a fun run and many people take it very seriously. However, people of all different nationalities and levels of fitness take part including a few in fancy dress. If you show your runner’s number then you will also receive a discount of €1 from your parking fee if you park by the port.At the end of the race you are given a snack and refreshments to help bring your energy levels back up to normal. Your registration fee includes civil liability and accident insurance and first aid facilities line the route. There is usually a good turn out from local people to cheer the runners on, even those bringing up the rear. The results are published on the website and all the runners will be sent an email with their results. You can also see the pictures of runners as they cross the finishing line on the website. There are different categories for the prizes including veteran groups and
trophies are given to the top three athletes in each category witheveryone getting a commemorative medal and goody bag for taking part. You can register up to the 23rd February but pay more the later you leave it. Until the 24th January the cost of registration for the half marathon is €18. Following this date you will pay €22. The 10K is slightly cheaper at €13 until the 24th January and €16 until the 23rd February. You register online and can pay directly online too. Once the transaction has been made you will receive a justificante de inscripción which you should bring to the event. It’s easy to sign up as the website has an English version and there is a Facebook page too. If you‘like’ this, you will be kept up-to-date as the event approaches. DAESH supporters caught in Madrid A police raid on a Jihad cell in the outskirts of Madrid led to a haul of AK-47s and two arrests. National Police raided a hut in Vallecas, Madrid, near the A-3 Valencia motorway, among four other properties and detained two men aged 18 and 25 who have been charged with 'incitement to terrorism'. It is not thought at present that the men, who were Spanish-born but to parents from Gambia and Morocco, had planned any attacks or intended to, but they had fully internalised the Jihad 'cause' and have been described as
'extremely dangerous'. They are said to be 'second-generation terrorists', a profile which many of the 175 DAESH supporters arrested since summer 2015 when Spain raised its terror risk alert to 4, the highest being 5. Torrevieja’s adult education under investigation The adult education centre is under investigation for having misappropriated €80,000 which was taken in registration fees for courses that should have been free. In spite of the accusations, adult education is to remain under the jurisdiction of the current governing body. A fact that is causing further disquiet amongst teachers and students. The facility has been under investigation since January 2016 and is run by The Vicent Marzá department. The department justify continuing with the provision due to the length of time thatit takes for a verdict to be reached. They also points out that measures have already been taken to ensure that the situation is rectified. Altogether around 500 adults are enrolled in the school. Five illegalities are being investigated: They include irregularities in relation to supervision, the operation of the students’ association, textbooks and registration. It was not clear where money from a vending machine in the centre was going and there was some mystery about its operation in the first place. In April last year eight of the ten teachers in the centre demanded the resignation of the director. Although not all of them work there any longer, there is a call for the director to be suspended whilst legal action is being taken. Green light for Villamartin housing development Orihuela Council has approved a new licence recently that green lights the building 144 new homes in Orihuela Costa. The development is to be located on Calle Verbena de la Paloma on the corner with Luisa Fernanda, near Villamartín Golf Club. Council spokesman Rafael Almagro said the houses will be high-spec with a basement, garage and swimming pool. The project is in addition to dozens of others that have already
been approved by the council in the last year – often to the bemusement of coastal residents who can see hundreds of resale properties still sitting empty. Orihuela Costa Continues to lead the number of constructions in Alicante province and at a national level, and even though the demand there never fell as much as the rest of the country during the worst years of the economic crisis, now it is bouncing
back, according to sources in the sector. The Official College of Quantity Surveyors, Technical Architects and Building Engineers of Alicante (COAATIEA) has revealed the construction figures from 2016 and according to its latest report, in 2015 there were 980 homes approved in Orihuela Costa, which is the largest number of property investments in Spain.

Miracle babies prepare to go home The ‘miracle’ Siamese twins from Jávea born in November finally left the ICU at Alicante General hospital ahead of the Three Kings celebrations. Valentina and Isabella, who were born in the Jávea health centre at only 26 weeks’ weighed only 700 grams when born. At two months olds they now weigh 2.1 kilos and 1.52 kilos and are able to go home very soon. Their parents, Craig and Arlene Drysdale, said they are both ‘very happy and content’. ‘They left intensive care in time for their first Three Kings day’ noted twins father Craig. He said: “They have made remarkable progress in these few weeks. Isabella has to undertake surgery on 23rd January to operate on a hernia, But in reality, there have been very few problems.” The Siamese twins have already been in the Alicante hospital for two months and their parents are ‘hoping to take them

Assisting at the birth at Javea health centre was the unit’s matron Ana Vico and the paediatricians Monica Bonora and Silvana Pintos; these two dedicated doctors took the babies to hospital, cuddling each one to their bodies to transfer body heat until the girls could be placed in incubators on the ICU and given specialist treatment.

Flood support for local residents The office for people affected by floods across Orihuela will remain open until 20th January. The Deputy Mayor, Rafael Almagro, has announced that the official office for people affected by the floods is now open and that it will provide information on the subsidies available from the Ministry of Interior until 20th January. The office, located in the Department of Development and Agriculture, Calle Adolfo Clavarana, 6, will offer this service daily from Monday to Friday, from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Councillor Almagro also said that the web page of the City Council is already displaying the information people need and the necessary forms which can be downloaded in order to request these grants. In addition, the local government has set up the email address: infoafectadosinundaciones@aytoorihuela .es so that those interested can request more information.
Bigastro policeman rescues wounded Eagle AN EAGLE THAT IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN SHOT HAS BEEN RESCUED BY A POLICIA LOCAL OFFICER AFTER LOCAL RESIDENTS SPOTTED THE ANIMAL AND REALISED THAT IT WAS ON THE VERGE OF DEATH. A local policeman from Bigastro has become the saviour of a bird of prey that was found seriously wounded on Saturday on a farm in the municipality. Efrén Pamies did not hesitate to rush to the location where a group of local people that he knew said there was an eagle that seemed to have serious wounds. His love for nature, and in particular for native animals, led Efren Parries to take care of the animal, which is believed to be a Mousetrap Eagle (Buteo buteo) or a Common Buzzard as it would
be known in English. The bird may well have been injured for several days, as the blood around the wound on its wing was very dry. The two wounds, which were on one of bird’s wings and on one leg, could have been caused by a hunter’s gun or could have been inflicted by other smaller birds. Had it not been found and treated the Buzzard would have died. Luckily, it has now been safely deposited in the premises of the Local Police in Bigastro under the close
supervision of officer Pamies, who said: “I have fed her with a little chicken and she has eaten voraciously. She was very weak and extremely hungry.” It is expected that Civil Guard’s Seprona division, which specialises in the care and welfare of the environment, plants and animals will take care of the animal and transfer it to a shelter where it can recover from its wounds. It will stay there until the eagle can be returned back to its natural habitat.

Foster families are needed for under sevens Valencia’s regional government is searching for foster homes for 71 children aged under seven years’ old, who are currently in care, most of whom have special needs. Some are disabled or recovering from illness or injury, others have psychological problems, and a number of them are in care with their brothers and sisters and must not be separated. The campaign, entailed Acollir és creixer. Millor en família or ‘Fostering is growing. Better in a family, focuses on the fact that children under seven are the most vulnerable to emotional, learning and even physical growth problems through not living in a proper home, and includes a video with real foster families explaining the advantages they enjoy through caring for these children. At present, Valencia has 3,730 children under care orders, of whom 2,639 are living with extended or direct family members, 620 in foster homes, and 145 in pre-adoption families. But around 1,100 children live in care homes, of whom 71 are aged under seven years. Equality minister for Valencia and viceregional president Mònica Oltra says her team wants to work towards children's homes being abolished altogether. “The key to healthy child development is simply having at least one adult who is absolutely crazy about you,” says Oltra, although she admits closing down children's shelters is unlikely to happen in
the next few years. Psychological research has shown that the emotional and cognitive impact of internment on children is negative longterm, especially the most at-risk groups – those with ‘functional diversity’ such as mental health problems, disability, ethnic minorities or those in poverty – and children aged three and under. In all these cases and, ideally, all lower-risk cases too, internment in a children's home should be ‘extremely limited’ to ‘very, very short periods of time’, given that youngsters who grow up in family homes show better levels of academic success and social integration as adults.
Requirements In total, Valencia wants to find 900 foster
families across the three provinces of the region. Pre-requisites to applying are merely, ‘having the time and, above all, the desire’ to attend to displaced children and to ‘help them overcome the powerful emotional damage’ they have suffered, says Oltra. Fostering is, psychologically, more difficult for families, since the child only stays with them until their situation at home is resolved. But if this does not happen within two years, the foster family has the right to permanent custody of the child until he or she turns 18. The regional government says it will guarantee foster children can go to school near their temporary home, even the same school as their foster brothers and sisters, even if this leads to the centre becoming oversubscribed. Informational talks and the necessary training will be given free of charge to anyone who decides to take the leap. Some benefits will be given to help towards costs. The regional government is working on ways to help adult foster children survive. “It's cruel to just chuck them out onto the street when they hit 18,” says Oltra. More lenient conditions for 'social inclusion' or cost-of-living benefits, and bonuses for companies in the region which take on young adults leaving foster care are at the planning stage.

Barefoot and raising money A 34 year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter arrived in Torrevieja on 3rd January on their journey from Barcelona to Gibraltar. Not only are they completing this journey on foot by they are doing it barefoot. Their very long walk began in Barcelona 53 days ago and together they will ultimately cover more than a thousand kilometres. The purpose of this gruelling trek is to raise
learning and practising her Spanish and was able to talk openly to reporters about her life and her ambition. Ilse is a guide in an interactive science museum in Ostend, Belgium. The intention is to purchase shoes for disadvantaged children who live in Kibera which is a suburb of Nairobi. Since November 11th she has been walking around 10 to 20km a day.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE With the Greek pensioners' bonus and the Italian banks' temporary liquidity discomfort quietly put to bed the euro went into the New Year looking steady, if uninspired. It ambled through the first week of 2017, enjoying some decent Euroland economic data without really celebrating them. The purchasing managers' indices, which look at current and anticipated activity in the private sector, were mostly up on the month and better than forecast. Inflation was also higher than expected at a provisional 1.1%. The euro moved a cent and quarter higher against the US dollar. The Greenback was hurt by the revelation that, because of uncertainty about the incoming president's policies, the Federal Reserve might not be as keen to increase interest rates as everyone had imagined. Sterling was neckand-neck with the euro, largely because the UK economic data were at least as punchy as those from the euro zone. It was not a great start to the
New Year for the dollar. Losses of a cent and a quarter to both the euro and the pound helped put it squarely at the back of the major currency field and it had no competition for the wooden spoon. There was nothing wrong with the US economic data. The purchasing managers' index surveys of current and anticipated activity in the private sector delivered results that were stronger than expected. But the minutes of last month's policy meeting at the Federal Reserve were less bullish than investors had anticipated. Some committee members wondered whether the strengthening dollar might have reduced upward pressure on inflation, lessening the need for higher interest rates. Meanwhile the ecostats from Britain and Euroland were also looking good. There, too, private sector activity was looking stronger. So, in what could have been a three-way draw, the Fed minutes lost it for the dollar.
TOURIST RECORD Spain has set another record for foreign holidaymaker visits – throughout 2016, the country welcomed a total of 71.5 million tourists, more than one-and-a-half times the resident population. In November alone, 4.1 million foreign visitors arrived in Spain, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE) based upon data gathered by the Tourist Movement Across Borders Survey (FRONTUR). Already exceeding the expected 70 million by the end of the year, the final figure is likely to be even higher since the numbers counted to date only go up to the end of November. Over these 11 months, the UK remained the most faithful to Spain with nearly 17 million holidaymakers – well over a quarter of the population of the British Isles – travelled to the country, representing 23.7 percent of the total and a year-on-year increase of 12.3 percent. French visitors were the second-largest national group, with 10.8 million travelling to Spain – up by 7.1 percent on the same period in 2015 – followed by
Germans, who totalled 10.7 million, up by 6.1 percent. The Irish represented the greatest growth, rising by 22.7 percent to 1.74 million, followed by the Portuguese, up by 15.8 percent to 1.87 million. And the Russian market is showing signs of recovery, growing by 1.8 percent to 920,000. Catalunya continues to be the number one destination in Spain, accounting for 23.8 percent of the total number of holidaymakers, or 17 million, rising by 3.8 percent year-on-year. The Balearics comes second, with 12.9 million visitors, up by 12 percent; the Canaries third with 12 million tourists, increasing by 12.7 percent; Andalucía fourth, with 10.1 million, rising by 12.9 percent; Valencia fifth, with 7.4 million, increasing by 16.8 percent, and Madrid sixth with 5.3 million tourists, up by 12.6 percent. All bar 15 million stayed in paid accommodation with the remainder staying in their own holiday homes, those of friends or family, or with relatives or friends already living in Spain.
Three Kings visit ill children The Three Kings took time out of their busy schedule recently to visit the sick children at the Vega Baja Hospital after their arrival in Orihuela. The Councillor for Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, accompanied the Three Kings on their traditional visit to the Vega Baja Hospital, where they delivered toys to the children who have been admitted to or were already in the hospital over the festive period. The Mayor said: “It is an endearing event that we cannot miss because the children look forward to the
visit of the Magi for many days beforehand, and also have the good fortune to be the first to greet them personally after their arrival in Orihuela.” The three Magi made their first visit after arriving in the city, this was prior to the morning reception that took place at the Town Hall at 10.30am and where they were received by the Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, and members of the Municipal Corporation. Then, their Majesties moved on to the Circus Theatre to collect the children’s letters before the traditional parades got underway.

Three Kings on the Coast Once again Orihuela Costa held its own dedicated Three Kings Parade, with local residents lining the streets to watch the Magi pass by. According to Spanish folklore and tradition, it is the Three Kings and not Father Christmas that bring presents to children that have been good all year and they do not bring them to open on Christmas Day, but on 6th January, the Epiphany. Festivities officially start the evening before Epiphany, on the night of 5th January, when the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos or Three Kings' Parade takes place. The coming of the Reyes Magos is marked
to Spanish tradition the Three Kings leave a piece of coal instead of lovely presents, as a punishment. The Three King’s Parade on the Coast began near the Town Hall and weaved its way through the streets of Orihuela Costa to Zenia Boulevard. In addition to the trio of esteemed guests - Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar - the parade featured local groups and societies, dance troops, musicians and marching bands as well as larger than life characters from films and cartoons. The crowd followed the parade to the shopping centre, where children were able to hand over their

The Kings ride upon horses or elaborate floats and throw goodies down to the children lining the streets. This is also traditionally the big opportunity for children to ask the Kings for presents. The religious monarchs, just like Santa Claus, certainly love their sweets, so Spanish children often set out goodies to entice the Kings as well as hay to feed their camels. When morning arrives, children delightedly discover that the Kings nibbled the sweets, the camels ate the hay, and by their shoes there are wrapped presents just waiting to be torn into. Unless, of course, they have been naughty and then according
present lists to the Three Kings and adults continued to celebrate the evening with festive fun, music and dancing. The tradition of the Three Kings stems from the New Testament where it is stated that the Kings, Melchor, Gaspar, and Balthasar, travelled by night all the way from the farthest confines of the Earth to bring gifts to the baby Jesus, whom they recognised as the Son of God. As well as being regal, the Three Kings are depicted as wise men, whose very wisdom is proved by their acknowledgement of Christ’s divine status. Arriving from three different directions, the Kings followed the light provided by the star of Bethlehem, which lingered over the manger. The history of pistachio nuts reflects their “royal character”, endurance and pride. Pistachios are said to have been a favourite delicacy of the Queen of Sheba, who confiscated all Assyrian deliveries for herself and for her royal court. Pistachio is the common name for Pistacia vera - related botanically with the likes of the Cashew and Mango. Although pistachio trees have been known for a long period of time, the place of their origin is uncertain. They probably come from the Middle East, western Asia and Asia Minor, where they used to grow wild in the high desert regions. Legend has it that lovers met beneath the trees to hear the pistachios crack open on moonlit nights for the promise of good fortune. And Nebuchadnezzar, the ancient king of Babylon, is said to have had pistachio trees planted in his fabled hanging gardens. History of the pistachio Pistachios are one of the oldest flowering nut trees. Recent archeological evidence suggests that the nuts were being used for food as early as 7,000 B.C. Flourishing in hot climates, pistachios spread from the Middle East to the Mediterranean, quickly becoming a treasured deli-cacy among royalty, travellers and com-mon folk alike. The pistachio’s high nu-tritional value and long storage life also made it an indispensable travel item among early explorers and traders. Along with almonds, pistachios were fre-quently
carried by travelers across the ancient Silk Road that connected China with the West. Growth habits The pistachio is a broad, bushy, tree which grows slowly to a height and spread of 25 to 30 feet (7 to 9 m), with one or several trunks. It is deciduous (drops its leaves each year) and dioecious (comes in separate sexes with the male trees bearing pollen and the female trees bearing the nuts). Both male and female trees must be present for fruit to set, or a branch from a male tree may be grafted on a female tree. The trees are wind-polli-nated rather than bee-pollinated. The trees are inclined to spread and droop, and may initially need staking. Their open habit and attractive foliage make them valuable ornamentals Like many other nut trees, the pistachio is alter-nate bearing - producing a heavy crop one year and a lighter crop the next. Pistachios mature rather slowly, reaching significant production seven to ten years after planting. Peak production is reached at about 20 years. Under fa-vourable conditions pistachio trees live and produce for centuries. Culture Pistachio trees will grow and survive in a

wide range of conditions, but thrive in areas which have winters cool enough to break bud dormancy and long, hot summers. Chill requirements are estimated at 600 to 1,500 hours below 7°C, depending on cultivar. Pistachio trees are very tolerant of drought, frost, heat, and saline soil. They need a sunny position and well-drained soil and do best with deep, infrequent
watering. Pistachio trees do poorly in conditions of high humidity, and are susceptible to root rot if they get too much water and the soil is not sufficiently free draining. Since pistachios grow slowly, they do not require large quantities of nitrogen fertilizer. A spring feeding of a complete, balanced fertilizer should be adequate. Marc Vijverberg

In Praise of a Girl’s Best Friend Earlier this year we devoted a column to ‘Man’s best Friend’, which, as you all know, is his faithful oul dog. In the interests of gender balance, this week we feel that ‘A Girl’s Best Friend’ should be featured. The cat or kitten is the most common household pet. This may, or may not be the case but it is totally irrelevant information because if anyone thinks that the cat is a girl’s best friend he is making an awful mistake because...? Well because “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” – that’s why! We are talking here fellows about the hardest natural substance known to man; no, not the girls you fools, the diamond! The diamond has been around for a fair bit of time – up to three billion years, in fact. It may come as some surprise to my self-proclaimed diamondly disadvantaged wife to find out that I know anything at all about diamonds, but when I visited South Africa I happened to meet up with a small (5’3’’) diamond dealer and I found his knowledge of gems to be fascinating. This was in Cecil Rhodes territory, the guy who formed the worldfamous De Beers diamond mining empire, which still controls 60% of the world’s diamond production. Before talking to Vincent I would have thought that a diamond was just valued by a trained eye, much the same as a butcher would eye up a Mullingar heifer. Not so; there are clearly identifiable characteristics which determine the value of the stone and these are the four Cs; cut, clarity, colour and carat. The best cut stones reflect the light in such a way as to optimise the fire and brilliance of the diamond. The best cut will be classified as Ideal, followed by Excellent and Very Good. Anything less for the girls would be like man’s best friend missing a paw. The best colour is no colour at all – although there is what are known
as “fancy diamonds”, which can command a big price. These are pure diamonds that, by a freak of nature, have turned out pink, blue, green, amber or even red. Diamonds are categorised from D to Z, with D representing the finest colourless stone. Most ‘colourless’ are, however, tinged with a hint of yellow and this is why they are usually set in yellow gold – to mask the yellow body tinge. Nitrogen is believed to be responsible for the yellow and blue diamonds, such as the famous Hope Diamond, are coloured by baron. ‘Clarity’ is what measures internal marks, known as “inclusions” and external marks called “blemishes”. Almost all diamonds incorporate tiny natural marks and the less of these, the higher the ‘Clarity’, which has around a dozen classifications. The larger the diamond, the more it weighs and like gold, diamonds are measured in carats. The word carat originates from a tree called Ceratonia Siliqua, which produces seeds of a consistent uniformity. In olden times one carat equalled the weight of one seed. Nowadays it takes a lot of mining and a lot of rock to find one carat of diamond in the Kimberley region of South Africa. Just like I found when I worked in a Canadian gold mine, I could not see the gold; likewise in Kimberley, they take out about ten tons of diamond- containing rock in order to get a carat of raw diamonds. What may surprise you is that almost 80% of diamonds mined go for industrial use. But the diamond is much more than the sister’s best friend: It is a rock-solid investment. Diamond demand is expanding all the time and over time, diamonds have always held their value. Diamonds are the perfect investment for many other reasons, apart from holding their value. They
don’t take up much room, can be moved around and can be sold for cash almost anywhere in the world. If you don’t need to cash them in, you can pass them on to your children or a “good friend” who likes to wear them. The beneficiaries will avoid paying capital gains or death duties, so you don’t give a “digout” to the heads of state. It is more than possible to make a nice profit on diamonds, but before you buy, you need to know what you are buying. Like a good farmer might say; “the day you buy is the day you sell.” The better the quality of the diamond you buy, the easier it is to sell and therefore the greater profit. Of course it goes without saying that the more you can invest and the longer you are in a position to wait, the greater will be the return. Never buy anything unless it is certified by a recognised grading laboratory and ensure that the certificate is genuine. If you see the words “clarity enhanced” don’t touch it. You can obtain manuals on how diamonds are priced, current world prices and the first thing that will shock you is the mark-up of your friendly jewellers! This column was not intended to be about hardheaded investment or wheelin’ and dealin’ at all, at all. During this season of goodwill we are just reminding boys and girls as to the girl’s best friend. There is no guarantee that the girl will last, but like the other song says; “Diamonds are Forever”!

An ONCE lottery ticket seller from Torrevieja is under investigation for fraudulently claiming that his house had been burgled and that €4,000 from the sale of vouchers had been stolen. The 52 year old man is believed to have tried to obtain more than €6,500 from an insurance company in compensation for the simulated robbery. ONCE is the Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles or National Organisation of Spanish blind people. It aims to raise funds to provide services for the blind and those with serious visual impairment. It is well-known for its charity lottery tickets known as Cupóns. The man claimed that the €4,000 stolen from his house had been collected from the sale of the lottery tickets and that more unsold tickets valued at €1,500 along with jewellery worth €1,000 had also been stolen. Following the denuncia made by the man, an investigation was carried out at his home. Although initially it looked as though a robbery had taken place, there were some indications that this was not the case.
Further research into the claim showed that the same man had made a similar one some years earlier. In the same manner, the man had taken out expensive insurance cover only days before the robbery allegedly took place. Combining all the evidence the Guardia Civil were finally able to arrest the man and charge him with fraud. Following his arrest, he confessed to the crime. This was the third attempt to collect insurance money fraudulently in the
past two months. In December 2016, two other people were investigated for reporting thefts and claiminginsurance to cover their loss. The thefts were later found not to have taken place. The Guardia Civil are keen to ensure that people are aware that claiming insurance money as a result of an invented crime like theft is in fact a crime in itself and can lead to a prison sentence.

You could say to him that unless he finishes with this woman you will tell your mother, but things will undoubtedly get ugly from there. See how things go. If he doesn’t stop seeing this woman you may have no choice.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH THE ANGELS Now is the time to start believing.... There is always hope and light at the end of the tunnel if you believe. The commencement of a New Year brings many things and some of you may be feeling apprehensive especially with the massive energy shift that many of us have been feeling. Personally my dreams have become even more vivid and I know in my heart that at least a couple of them are prophetic. My Dad who is in spirit has been giving me many messages of light within my dreams and I have felt his spirit many times. If you have been asking for help, or need guidance, our loved ones in spirit can, and do, assist by leaving you messages of their presence. Ever heard their favourite tune on the radio just as you were thinking about them? or see someone who uncannily resembles them or the robin who appears just when you were feeling down or upset? I know that a lot of you have moved on from situations that no longer serve you and it feels as if everything is upside down. However we have to go through this process so we can embrace what is around the corner. Change can be unsettling but it can also be full of joy, magic and wonder. You will find that everything happens for a reason and
the angels and your loved ones are setting the wheels in motion for what is to come.... So enjoy each moment, get excited for a new chapter in your life and retain your sense of fun. Know that life is
for living, and a new year will herald excitement and resolutions that will be said with conviction in January, and by the Spring some may have been broken. But so what? As long as you are enjoying each moment and are living life to the full, that is all that matters. Don't put yourself under too much pressure. To assist you in ringing in the New Year with a cheer instead of fear, I have written this channelled Angel Invocation. When you say this out loud once a day for a week, and know and believe that the angels can hear you, it will strengthen the bond between you,
and open up the channel of communication. I wish each and every one of you a Prosperous New Year. CRUZ AZUL HELPS PETS OF FLOOD VICTIMS The devastation caused by the recent catastrophic storms and floods in Los Alcázares meant that hundreds of homes were affected and many of the
residents were left with just the clothes that they stood up in. All this happened just a few days before Christmas and the townspeople rallied together to help those affected, helping to clean up their flooded streets, homes and basements. People very generously donated their time, money, food, bedding, clothing and children’s presents to try and retrieve some semblance of order in time for Christmas. Adults and children were not the only ones to be affected by the catastrophe; much-loved pets were also rescued by their owners and they too lacked food and bedding. Dr Kenneth Zucker believes he is a victim of the politicisation of transgender issues. The film presents evidence that most children with gender dysphoria overcome the feelings without transitioning and questions the science behind the idea that a boy could somehow be born with a 'female brain' or vice versa.

You may read, time and time again, when looking for a detached property, it offers “off road parking”, and that’s just perfect, but when you own a property with street parking, that’s when you need to think ahead, before your viewing appointment shows up. Nothing is more off putting, than a “Welcome to your new home – but you must use a park ‘n ride to get here!” If you have street parking and you park your car right outside your property, then be sure to park right in front of your entrance gate the night before (if you are in a busy area), and move your car at the last minute before your buyers are due to turn up. Your Real Estate Agent, can then show the buyers exactly how easy it is to park outside your property every day. Some communities have parking for most of the homeowners, so don’t forget to let your Real Estate Agent have a key to the parking area too, if it’s gated. You may think it’s not so important, but for a buyer,
parking spaces can be high up on their check-list of “what they want” when they purchase a home. Never underestimate what is important for a buyer. I’ve seen it all! Let’s just say, everyone has their little quirks! If you own a property, where finding a space is like winning the lottery, then be sure to point out where you park to your Real Estate Agent. You live there, your Agent does not, so you must know a few tricks, like the best time of day to view the home, when parking is usually easier. MOVIE PICK Tina and Bobby - ITV - 10.00pm
First in a three-part drama series telling the true story of Tina and Bobby Moore's marriage. In the first episode, it is love at first sight when Tina Dean meets Bobby Moore, and she soon abandons her career to marry him. Although Tina struggles as a housewife, Bobby's star ascends as he becomes England captain, and when Tina falls pregnant their future looks bright - until Bobby is diagnosed with testicular cancer. Sworn to secrecy, Tina shoulders the burden of his illness alone and proves herself as his rock, and the birth of baby Roberta consolidates their bond. Bobby resumes playing, but he and Tina clash when Bobby jeopardises his World Cup prospects. A contrite Bobby backs down, promising Tina that everything will get back to normal after the World Cup.

You hit a wall It’s day four and suddenly dieting isn't so easy. A total lack of carbs and sugar has turned your healthy glow into a pallid grey, you can't stop thinking about cheese toasties and you totally overreact to your friend’s suggestion of a burger for lunch. Everywhere you look you see delicious, sugary food (cakes, biscuits and pastries) crying out to be eaten... by you and now. Right now. 6. Cheat day Aha! All is not lost; you just need a cheat day! That's definitely the solution – you'll simply eat whatever you want for just one day, satisfy all your cravings, then you'll get straight back to your 1,200 calories a day tomorrow, refreshed and revived. Researchers Acotex say the uncertainty caused by 300 days without a government, and poor weather conditions this winter discouraging shoppers from going out, have been partly to blame, but predicts a good post-Christmas sales campaign.
At this time of year, retailers make around 25 percent of their annual profits in the space of less than a month, and they expect to increase these by 5 percent based upon last year's January sales. Consumers are reminded that discounted prices in the sales do not translate to discounted quality, meaning all goods should be in exactly the same condition as when they were retailed new. The original retail price should be clearly shown next to the sale price, any defects clearly pointed out, and the same payment methods accepted the rest of the year still valid – for example, if a shop normally accepts credit and debit card payments, they cannot insist on cash only during the sales. Electronics still come with a standard two-year guarantee, and goods which turn out to be faulty can be returned. ‘Change-of-heart’ refunds, permitted on new, full-price goods up to 30 days after purchase, are generally, however, not accepted during the sales. Government makes healthcare British and Spanish top cocaine users in payment to secure service Europe
Treasury minister Cristóbal Montoro has announced a payment of nearly €3.1 billion will be made to regional governments in order to cover bills for education, healthcare and social services suppliers. A further €1.4bn will be freed up some time at the beginning of this month for other expenses to cover miscellaneous debts, including paying pharmacies for prescription medication. “Much of the bills we are due to pay are for healthcare, which is the fundamental core of the supply chain financed through the Autonomous Region Liquidity Fund [FLA],” Montoro explains. “By sending the money now, it means these suppliers will be paid within the legal deadline of 30 days – crucial for ensuring their financial security and enabling investment, exports and employment.” This also means no delays should occur in providing vital services to the public, the minister adds. Health minister Dolors Montserrat said the funding deal signed with the pharmaceuticals governing body, Farmaindustria, means chemists will be
paid on time and avoid prescription drug shortages that have been experienced in previous years due to huge debts with high-street stores. Two years ago, even fairly common prescription medication ran out in the Comunidad Valenciana due to the regional government not paying pharmacies as it had not received the funds from Madrid. Customers reported having to go to four or five chemists to pick up their pills.
Teen drinking campaign Following growing concern about widespread alcohol abuse among Spanish teenagers, Spain’s FAD, a foundation that tackles drug and alcohol addiction, has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the problem. The campaign comes two months after a 12year-old girl died in Madrid from alcohol poisoning. The last comprehensive survey, carried out in 2014 by the staterun National Drugs Plan among school students aged from 14 to 18 shows that more than 37,000 drank on a daily basis, with more than 285,000 taking up drinking within the last year. Almost 490,000, or 22 percent, had been drunk within the previous 30 days. “We want people who do not have experience of these events to understand what is going on,” said Ignacio Calderón, the FAD’s director general. He calls the campaign an “action plan” to bring together civil society and the different levels of government. Figures suggest that the average age most Spaniards take their first drink is between 13 and 14. More than 710,000 of those surveyed by the National Action Plan on Drugs indulged in binge drinking during the weekend,
meaning they consumed in excess of five drinks in a short period of time. A recent survey carried out by Spanish newspaper El Pais showed that at least 5,000 minors received hospital treatment for alcohol abuse in 2015: “the tip of the iceberg,” says Asís Babín, the Health Ministry’s delegate on the National Action Plan on Drugs. “The banalisation of alcohol reflects a generalised banalisation in society,” the official warns, highlighting the importance of combating stereotypes such as “the funny drunk”. “There is no point in playing the blame game as if this were only their problem,” says Calderón. “For adults, the reality of alcohol consumption by minors is a disgrace. We have to get out there and get this under control and try to reduce the reality of this phenomenon.” A FAD statement describes Spain’s alcohol problem as “complex,” arguing society as a whole as a responsibility. It adds that current legislation is “insufficient”, adding that education and awareness are the long-term solution. While Calderón has applauded Health Ministry initiatives to introduce a new law on drinking

Spain has secondhighest life expectancy in the world New figures show that Spain has the second-highest life expectancy in the world after Japan, plus more than 100,000 people aged more than 100 years, who share some longevity secrets. Newly released figures by the OECD, show that the average life expectancy in Spain is now 83.2 years, just 0.2 years lower than Japan’s 83.4 years. Experts cite the country’s healthy Mediterranean diet which includes high amounts fish, fruit and vegetables. The warmer climate is also attributed to better health. Photographer Andrea Comas recently interviewed a handful of the centenarians to ask them what their secrets to longevity were. The tips ranged from a spoonful of honey a day to regular intake of gazpacho, a traditional cold Spanish soup made from tomatoes and cucumber. Maria Josefa Guillen, 103, from Sevilla, swears by the soup, claiming its nutritional value has kept her young. Francisco Nunez, 112, from Badajoz, says he dislikes old peoples’ homes as they are ‘full of old people’, and says that maintaining a youthful outlook on life is the secret to staying young.

Hi Aunty, I have been happily using Skype for 3 years mainly for family in the UK without any problems but the last time I attempted to use Skype it would not connect. I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 10. I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the Skype app but with same result. I tried it on my Galaxy tablet but still no joy. It does start to make a connection but then simply stops. I know Microsoft have bought Skype so have they done something that requires updating my system? Aunty Says: Hi Mel. If both your laptop and you tablet are having the same problems then I suspect the issue is either with your Internet provider or your Skype account. Have you tried restarting your router and maybe test Skype on your laptop via an internet cafe connection? Another thing to try is the built-in Skype call test. If you don’t see it on your Skype screen then type the word Echo into the search box and you should get the option to call the free sound/test service. Certainly make sure you have the latest version of Skype and let me know how you get on.

Drowning on the rise Last year 51.7 percent died on beaches and 11 percent died where no lifeguards were present. The year 2016 ended with 437 deaths from drowning on beaches, rivers and swimming pools across Spain, 5 percent more than the 415 fatalities last year. As in previous years, the victim’s profile continued to be a Spanish man – 51.7 percent on the beaches, according to the National Drowning Report elaborated by the Spanish
Royal Foundation of Lifesaving and Rescue. Of note is the increase in unsupervised areas of 11percent: 376 died in such areas either unsupervised our outside the lifeguard service hours compared to 321 in 2015. Summer figures were improved despite during July and August when the water-parks are busy, a fall of 26 percent in the number of fatalities compared to 2015. July saw the largest falls of 30 fewer than in 2015 and also in October
with 24 fewer deaths than in 2015. But in May and June where annual increases were seen of 12.4 percent and 12.8 percent respectively, and in December another increase of 5.9 percent. Drowning in rivers saw 81 deaths compared to 47 in 2015 and by autonomous regions the Canaries reported 71 cases, Galicia 69, Andalucía 66, Valencia Community 47, and Baleares 37.

UK VW owners seek compensation Approximately ten thousand UK owners of Volkswagen cars affected by the diesel emissions scandal have begun proceedings for a class action lawsuit demanding around £3000 in compensation each. To date, VW has not offered compensation to UK owners of affected cars, powered by EA189 diesel engines made between 2009 and 2015, arguing that its cars didn’t breach the European emissions regulations. Over a million units of Audis, Seats, Skodas and Volkswagens are affected by the scandal in the UK. If the legal bid is successful it could have the potential to cost up to £3.6bn. Volkswagen’s stance on the issue in the UK is in contrast to its position in the US, where affected cars were in clear breach of the tougher regulations. In the USA the firm reached a £12bn settlement with owners, with some receiving payouts of up to £8000. In the UK the legal action is being coordinated by legal firm Harcus Sinclair UK on behalf of a syndicate of applicants. The case will go before the High Court at the end of this month. Damon Parker, head of litigation at Harcus Sinclair, told the press that drivers
felt they had "no choice but to take legal action". "The group action aims to ensure that, if VW is found to have misled consumers about the environmental damage caused by their cars, they are penalised accordingly so as to discourage this sort of behaviour from happening again," he said. The company’s stance in the UK and the rest of Europe has previously come under fire from Louise Ellman, a Labour MP who chairs the Transport Select Committee. "Volkswagen's evidence to us was just not credible but the government has lacked the will to hold VW accountable for its actions," she said last year. "There is a real danger that VW will be able to get away with cheating emissions tests in Europe if regulators do not act." A VW statement in response to the legal action read: "We have been notified that Harcus Sinclair intends to bring proceedings against Volkswagen on behalf of 77 claimants in the English High court in relation to the NOx emissions issue. As we have previously said, we intend to defend such claims robustly. "Technical measures have already been developed by the Volkswagen Group for

Spurs defender Ben Davies managed to do what Vincent Janssen looked very unlikely to achieve all day, and that was head the ball past the Villa goalkeeper. It was just like last season for Villa, as they failed to win away from home against Premier League opposition.

CD Torrevieja 1-2 Villareal C Torry lost this first match of 2017, but their second half display was magnificent. In this period they had the ball in the net three times, but only one stood. Then a fast break left Lucas exposed and the visitors snatched an undeserving winner with barely a few minutes left to play. It looked to the world like Torry would take all three points, instead they only took tears and bitterness to the changing room as players had to be restrained from brawling.

As well as Buba, Calzado, Vicente and Lewis were all suspended for this match and as well as full debuts for Lucas and Jorge, Lewis Rutherford also played for the first time for Torry, coming on as a 56th minute sub for the injured Lewis Booker. This Torry squad is changing rapidly, with another clutch of new players due to feature this month and the team now boasts no less than three named Lewis, so do keep up! And that does not include Luis Carlos!
Without any shadow of a doubt, Villareal C were much the better in the first half. This young side is littered with eager talent and they moved quicker to the ball. ran into space, delivered their passes with greater accuracy and fluency and had Torry struggling to contend with them. Making his debut in goal for the suspended Buba, Lucas had to dash out of his box to try and clear a ball, but flattened his opponent instead and was in the notebook in under three minutes! He later redeemed himself
Torry did well to weather the first half Villareal storm, though in truth the visitors did not seriously trouble Lucas. This was mainly down to an exceptional performance from captain Martin who made crucial tackles and whose presence was colossal. Debutant Jorge was also impressive and fans had much to enjoy and applaud. However, it was Villareal who opened the scoring soon after the restart. Carrasco seemed to feel he had been fouled and allowed his opponent to escape his clutches, who
crossed simply to Simon who then buried his shot into the corner of the net, Lucas just short of reaching it. The goal galvanised the home side whose play thereafter was fabulous. Villareal had no answer to the power and precision of Torry's attacks. Luis Carlos and Robles tormented them down the left flank, whilst Pastor and Damiam ran riot on the right. Torry took a stranglehold on the game and it was one way traffic for much of last half hour. Torry scored a well deserved equaliser with 25 minutes left to play after Luis Carlos delivered a superb free kick from the left and new boy Jorge rose highest to glance the ball home for a sensational debut. Jorge had now moved to centre half with Lewis Rutherford replacing the injured Lewis Booker and taking up the right back position. Torry then brought on Hugo Salamanca to help thrust through the middle for the winner, which looked certain to come. Damian beat the
offside trap with an immaculate run and delivered the ball across goal but Robles just failed to get the necessary touch on it to convert it. Pastor was combining with Damian to create more chances and Villareal were riding their luck. Fuoli in the visitor's goal was having a charmed life, sticking out an arm or a leg to frustrate the home side. After one such save the ball fell to Robles who smashed it into the net via the underside of the crossbar. The referee looked to his linesman for confirmation of the goal, but none was forthcoming and play continued. It was a travesty. Moments later the mercurial Damian worked his magic inside the box on the left hand side and passed to Hugo who cleverly back flipped the ball into the net for a Torry winner. Oh no, the linesman who failed to see that the ball had crossed the line for a Torry goal earlier, deemed that Damian was offised and thus this goal was ruled out too! Still it looked like the Torry winner would come. That was until Villareal broke hard
and fast and Akale found himself with only Lucas to beat. He did so professionally and with barely two minutes left to play, Villareal had resumed the lead. Torry did not hang their heads. They once more seized the initiative and presed for the second equaliser, again going close. When the final whistle blew the players were inconsolable and the fans stood to a man and woman and applauded them off the park. They had been terrific and did not deserve to lose. There was some hargy bargy on the pitch before all the players made it to the changing rooms, with the Gaurdia Civil escorting the officials safely to their area. This weekend Torry travel to near rival Orihuela to get back on track.
