The weather has been causing misery for most of Spain during the last week or so, but one of the worst hit regions has been ours, the province of Alicante.

F

ollowing the historic sight of snow on Mediterranean beaches last Wednesday, Thursday’s total rainfall was quadruple the average for January and was followed by more wind and rain over the weekend. Orihuela city registered 80.4 litres per square metre of rain on Thursday, according to MeteOrihuela, which is almost four times the average for the month of January, 23l/m2. Meanwhile Rojales accumulated 52l/m2. The rain and snow has swelled the River Segura, and saw it flow at a rate of 53 cubic metres per second and dropping, while in Rojales the

Four months of rain in one day level was 38m3/s and rising. The rain returned on Saturday along with snow from 1,100 metres, and in the afternoon the wind brought winds and high waves to the coast. The snow that fell in Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja and surrounding areas was exciting for most residents, who had not seen the coast turned white like that for over nine decades. However it was not so pleasing for the Russian football team CSKA Moscow, who have been staying in Campoamor for the last few days for training during their winter break in the league.

Like many teams from the coldest parts of Europe, the Russian team came to the Alicante province, and specifically Orihuela Costa, seeking sunshine so it could train in the best conditions. Unfortunately, they found snow. On their official Twitter account, the team posted several images of the football pitch where they were supposed to train with the message: “It’s warm in Spain, they said… Some snowy weather at our training camp at Campoamor today.” In the end the Russians were able to train as the blanket of snow covering the fields disappeared in a few hours. “From snow to green in a couple of hours. Hopefully no more weather anomalies in Campoamor!” they added. The rain and wind lashing Orihuela destroyed a car that was parked in the School of Art and Design car park, near Continued on page 2

the Palmeral de San Antón. The high winds toppled a palm tree, which fell right on top of the back end of the parked vehicle, completely destroying it. Fortunately no one was inside at the time and nobody was injured. In Torrevieja, images of a car half submerged in water on a street beside the coast featured in news bulletins across the province. Meanwhile, a 53 year old German man had to be rescued by the fire service and Guardia Civil after he spent the night trapped in his car between

And finally, the DGT traffic authority reported major tailbacks on the AP7 motorway northbound on Sunday – due to people driving up to see the snow. Residents of the warmer Southern Costa Blanca decided to take to the motorway in search of snow, causing congestion several kilometres long on the northbound route.

BITE SIZE Celebrating Torrevieja’s local police NEWS: On the 30th June Las Culturas primary school will celebrate its third charity run for peace. On this occasion they will be collaborating with the Club de Deporte Adaptado CDA of Torrevieja. This is the organisation that works to support disabled people with sports, leisure and therapy opportunities. The fun run will be held from 12pm on the 30th January at the Club Salino roundabout in Calle Tórtolas. All the children from the school take part along with family members.

More collapsing buildings in Torrevieja On Saturday, 21st another of Torrevieja’s abandoned buildings collapsed. At around 9.30pm a building, previously used as a carpenter’s shop, collapsed into the street. The building, situated in la Avenida de la Estación and Calle Campoamor, had been unused for the last ten years. Many people would recognise this building as being close to the popular Minigolf bar and restaurant. The poor state of the building has been reported on previous occasions and recently was inspected prior to a decision being made as to its future. After the building collapsed the decision was taken to demolish what remained and the surrounding streets were closed whilst the work took place. Continued on page 4

The first mention of the local police in Torrevieja was recorded as being on 17th January 1834. It was a handy coincidence that Torrevieja’s day for recognising the hard work of the local police this year happened to be on the same day. In 1834, however, there were only 21 officers. Now, there are more than 160. The ceremony was held at the police headquarters and the congregation was addressed by the mayor, José Manual Dolón. He expressed his gratitude for the professional and committed service that the local police in Torrevieja provide. The relationships between the town hall and the local police have not always run smoothly. There have been issues to do with rotas and working conditions which the mayor hopes are either resolved or on their way to being resolved. The mayor also thanked the families of the serving officers as well as other law enforcement agencies including the Guardia Civil, the Policía Nacional and the army who were also present at the ceremony. The town band, La Unión Musical Torrevejense and the Ricardo Lafuente choir entertained with their rendition of Torrevieja’s hymns. There was also a demonstration of ability by

Athos the dog who is trained to find narcotic substances. The day ended with refreshments. The mayor laid a wreath of flowers at the foot of the statue Saint Ángel Custodio, the patron saint of the police force, for those officers who have died in service. Acknowledgment was made of those officers with more than 35 years in the service, those with 30 and those with 25 years’ service to date. A new police officer, just appointed, was also recognised at the ceremony.

Little Pod appeals for wheels The Little Pod Association is a registered charity here in Spain helping abused and abandoned animals and it desperately needs your help. The local community is being asked to help raise money for a designated small van to transport rescued animals to safety, take them to vet visits and to carry food and supplies. The ancient private car that the charity has used for many years now has 243,000 kilometres on the clock. Over those years it has helped more than 1500 animals, but it is now on its last legs and a recent

accident highlighted just how urgent a new vehicle is. Dog Noel, who was 15 years old on Christmas Day, is an absolute rock for all the other dogs at Little Pod, especially the nervous ones. He was recovering from an ear operation when he pulled out his surgical drain and had to be rushed back to the vets.

Despite it being just a two minute journey, Noel he began howling and crying. Something was obviously very wrong and Noel was in considerable pain. On opening the boot, the Little Pod volunteers saw that Noel had got his paw and leg wedged down a small gap between the boot floor and the spare tyre. On arrival the vet came out to help as the leg was badly twisted and completely trapped. The risk of Noel breaking his leg was high as he panicked and pulled trying to release himself. Luckily he was freed and unharmed but the incident proved that the car is no longer suitable for purpose and the quicker the Association can get a van the better. The Little Pod Association is asking all animal lovers to help it raise funds to buy a reliable and suitable vehicle. Volunteers are happy to attend any local fundraising events to help those who do wish to support the campaign – or if any local car dealer has a suitable vehicle they would like to donate or reduce the price on the Association would be delighted to meet and discuss the opportunity. Anyone wishing to donate money to the Little Pod Appeal for Wheels campaign can do so through PayPal at: www.littlepodassoc@yahoo.co.uk or if bank details are required please contact the Little Pod Association for details.

Local quiz raises funds BITE SIZE for Huntington’s Disease NEWS: A much-needed 251 euros has been raised at a fun quiz at the Cafe - Bar in the centre of Almoradi, in aid of the not-sowell-known charity for sufferers with Huntington's Disease. The quiz was a very close fought contest which was narrowly won by Mazza's Masterminds, who were “surprised and delighted” by their victory. Huge thanks go to Martin and Christine Watkins for devising and running the quiz. Bar owner, Maria Silverthorne and her partner Chas, who provided a range of tapas for the quizzers, during the interval, in addition to donating vouchers for a Meal for Two at one of their Bistro Nights and Sunday Lunch for Two, were once again thrilled with this “sold out event” . “We are more than happy to help raise awareness of Huntington's Disease and for The Huntington's Disease Association. We know sufferers, David and Peter well but can only imagine half of what they and their families have to go through living with this awful disease. “Chas and I are very much looking forward to hosting further fundraising quizzes and events in the future.” Huntington's Disease is a hereditary terminal illness which affects both men and women. It destroys the pathways between the brain and the rest of the body, resulting in uncontrollable movements, loss of speech, incontinence and loss of memory function, to name but a few symptoms. It also causes changes in personality and depression. Huntington's Disease destroys everything that makes us recognisable as human beings and there is currently no

cure. Any child of an affected parent has a 50 percent risk of inheriting the affected gene and anyone who inherits the affected gene is guaranteed to develop Huntington’s Disease. It has already claimed the life of David's father, Vic and is now affecting him and his younger brother Gary. Peter's brother has already died from the illness and his son recently tested positive at the age of just 30 years old. If you would like to get involved with organising a fundraising event for Huntington’s Disease in your area, or know someone who is affected by Huntington's Disease, then please contact Marion Smith on 651 043 681.

Increasing tourist options for the disabled The councillor for tourism, Fanny Serrano met on 21st January with Eduardo Signes from the department for the physically disabled in Valencia. The meeting was to discuss ways of opening up different tourist options in Torrevieja to those with a disability. Options are a ‘ruta de la sal’ which might include a trip to the Eras de la Sal, the Museo del Mar y de la Sal and to the Salinas. Other possibilities that were considered included organising trips to the submarine and the tourist train which could be used for transporting people from the Eras de la Sal to the floating museum. ‘Turismo para Todos’ or ‘tourism for all’ is a bilingual guide that identifies five tourist routes: three in Valencia, one in Castellón and another in Alicante. Councillor Serrano hopes that Torrevieja can also be part of this project.

Help for sports clubs The councillor for sports, Victor Ferrández has announced the publication of the application process for sports subsidies for the different clubs around the area for the 2016/ 2017 season. Ferrández met with representatives from the clubs to clarify arrangements and the money available. Twenty-two have applied previously for support and there have been 16 grants for elite sportsmen and women. Money will Picture shows HD sufferers Peter Barton and David Smith.

Just a little rumble The minor tremor felt at 9.35am on Sunday 22nd January was so small that there’s uncertainty about whether it should be recorded at all. Registering less than1.5 it will not find itself in any record books and may not even make the National Geographic Institute’s register. However, for us in Torrevieja, it does clock up another rumble in our seismically active zone.

Car fire in La Mata At 1.45 in the morning of Friday 20th January, Torrevieja’s fire brigade was called out to a fire in a car in calle Ángel in La Mata. The car had caused damage to an estate agents and the front of a nearby building. Neighbours called the local police and services via 112. Rapid intervention meant that the fire was soon extinguished.

New resources for Alpe’s children Children and young people attending Alpe special needs centre in Torrevieja have been given new equipment for their multi-sensory area of the school. The €2,600 worth of equipment has been bought following a donation from La Caixa. The school has been able to buy a ball pool and florescent objects for the sensory room and they will provide much needed additional stimulation for those with severe needs. The sensory room was originally a garage area and was reformed in 2013 thanks to the determination and persistence of the teachers and management of the centre. The area is now used to provide therapy for its pupils and is invaluable for providing new types of stimulation to those disabled pupils who attend. They hope to continue to equip the room with more items in the future.

Over the past couple of weeks, CBP has reported the collapse of two abandoned buildings in Torrevieja. The first was the collapse of the wall belonging to a listed building in the town centre on the 7th January. The second a dilapidated and abandoned building close to the Mini golf, reported in this week’s Bite Size News. Any visitor to Torrevieja will note that there are a number of these buildings in and around the town centre. Many of them are old and original but are categorised by the fact that they remain unused and gradually become more and more unsafe over a period of years. Should the council take over these abandoned buildings? The questions in now arising in relation to la Casa de Los Balcones, located in Los Balcones just off the CV95. This again is a protected building but it is in a very poor state of repair and could also collapse if something isn’t done soon. The town hall planning department is now making moves with the possibility of expropriating the property to ensure that it can be preserved and doesn’t become just another pile of

Woman convicted of domestic violence An Orihuela court has convicted a 30 year-old woman of domestic violence and harming her partner after she attacked her husband at the family home. The sentence orders the woman to stay at least 300 metres away from him for two years and to work 54 days of community service as a punishment. The events took place on 15th January when the now convicted woman was accused by her partner, a 37 year old man, of attacking him and causing injuries during an argument in the house they both shared. The court heard that he suffered deep scratches to various parts of his body as well as a bite on his back. The court also awarded custody of the couple’s two children to the father as well as giving him use of the family home. The woman was ordered to pay her husband €750 as compensation for his injuries said his defence lawyer José Luis Bernabé.

rubble. The property is a manor house that has gradually deteriorated to its current state. The council do have the legal means to do this according to the Lotup law agreed in 2014 by the previous council. A property that is in a serious state of disrepair and remains on a protected building list can be expropriated if necessary. It will however be difficult to put this law into effect as the current owners of the property are applying for it to be registered as a ruin and subsequently demolished enabling the land to be built on afresh. Taking this route would mean them avoiding the €700,000 that it is estimated it will cost to renovate it. Failure to renovate the building has led to fines being incurred and demands have been made of the owners to carry out emergency work to ensure that the building does not collapse. This has partially been put into operation with the owners carrying out some work on the property but not sufficient to prevent a collapse of the roof in July 2014. The property is in a very prestigious position with significant real estate value as it overlooks the salt works and is in front of the hotel. However, actions must be taken soon if this building of historic interest is not to meet the fate of other local buildings.

Rain stops school ■ SUZANNE O’CONNELL suzanne@costablancapeople.com

Many people will have had their travel plans changeddue to the rain and snow of last week. However, for some it meant even further disruption to the usual routine. Colegio Amanecer in Torrevieja, was forced to suspend its classes on the 20th January due to rain making its prefabricated classrooms unusable. The continued siting of the school in these classrooms has cost the region 2.2 million euros between the years 2004 and 2015 and questions are being asked about how long this situation must continue. The amount paid in rent over this period would have paid for a purpose-built school to have been erected. Classes were suspended due to leaking roofs and water entering classrooms. In some cases the leaks were leading to cuts in electricity. The parents association questions why classes weren’t suspended there before hand. Parents were already circulating pictures of the conditions in the classrooms the previous day. The pre-fabricated classrooms are one of the oldest examples of this temporary type of accommodation in the Valencian community. Campaigning continues to call for re-siting of the school with new buildings to house the children. The school currently has 280 pupils, and whilst acknowledging the quality of the education there, parents are upset that they continue to be taught in these kinds of conditions. Suzanne O’Connell

Dates for May fair The May fair in Torrevieja will be celebrated from the 10th to the 14th May. As usual the fair will take place in the fishing port. The event this year will be a little later than usual because of the timing of Easter and the need to keep a period of a few weeks between the two. The fair remains one of the most popular events in Torrevieja’s calendar with performances by local dance groups and other local artists and the parade of horses and carts with their riders in traditional Andalucian dress. Forty pigeons lost at sea

Around forty pigeons taking part in a competition disappeared last Monday 16th January in Torreviejaas a result, it’s claimed, of the weather. The competition was organised by the sports club ‘La Colosal’ which is one of the oldest societies in the Valencian Community. The club is dedicated to the breeding and training of pigeons. The birds, worth up to €15,000 in total, were lost in spite of their owners’ attempts to locate them. The competition was expected to last several days and consists of a test whereby a female is released and the males follow. However, the female took off towards the sea and a strong wind

meant that this pigeon and those following were unable to find their way back. The pigeons were lost in spite of them having tracking devices which should mean that they can be found within a radius of six kilometres. Their disappearance has been put down to the inclement weather during last week. Altogether about a hundred had been released and about fifty were recovered from different parts of the city having followed the lights and turned back. Of the remaining forty, which included some of the most valuable pigeons, no trace could be found. Suzanne O’Connell

Keeping warm in Torrevieja It was 91 years since there was snow in Torrevieja. Many people were out to record the event and enjoyed the first flurry of snowfall to be seen in more than a generation. However, the cold and subsequent rain and storms has presented quite a challenge for those in a caring role, be it for people or animals. Members of the town council in Torrevieja met with others to discuss what plans could be put in place to help the homeless during the cold snap. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, and the health and safety councillor, Javier Manzanares, discussed a protocol to implement whilst the temperatures in the town fell close to freezing. Temporary accommodation was provided in the sports centre ‘Cecilio Gallego’ where up to 100 homeless people could be accommodated. The meeting consisted of CECOPAL (Centro de Coordinación Municipal) and took place at 1pm on the 16th January, two days before the cold spell was set to hit. It included councillors, representatives from municipal services, the Guardia Civil,

the fire service and water company, AGAMED amongst others. The emergency services had been contacted along with voluntary organisations like Alimentos Solidarios, la Cruz Roja and Reach Out. The aim of the protocol and meeting was to avoid those without a home having to sleep on the street over this period.

Councillor Javier Manzanares explained that the sports centre could house up to the 100 people thought to be currently sleeping rough in the town. The facility would be open to the homeless from Tuesday 17th January until the following Saturday 21st January. People would be admitted until 12pm and the facility would be open again at 6am. Protección Civil would man the venue with 15 volunteers. These measures were taken following the adverse weather reports of intense rain, cold, wind and the possibility of snow. Extreme weather conditions for this part of the world that we now know were correctly forecast. provide some protection against the cold. For the cats, they made covers out of blankets for the baskets in which they could shelter. Councillor Carmen Morate was very grateful for those who volunteered to help and contributed materials. Cats and dogs alike have been very reluctant over the past few days to leave the protection of the covers that have been made for them. The smallest dogs have been taken in to temporary foster homes during this cold period as they cannot withstand the very low temperatures. Thanks to the efforts put towards finding homes, only 16 cats and 19 dogs remain in the shelter. Further donations of blankets and beds as well as people ready to adopt are very much appreciated. National tree day in Torrevieja On31st January it will be the Día del Árbol or day of the tree in Torrevieja. Torrevieja has a number of activities and events organised to celebrate this important day. One of these will be the planting of 50 mulberry trees that have been donated collaboratively between the town hall, AGAMED and the Rotary club of Torrevieja. The trees will be planted over the next few days, probably on Sunday 29th in the sports area of Torreta 2 where

there is a park and pitches for handball and basketball. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, announced the event at a press conference and commented on the importance of preserving the environment in Torrevieja. The environmental features of Torrevieja, such as the natural lakes, are currently being publicised as tourist attractions at various events. The day of the tree is a symbolic day.

‘We must help to emphasise the importance of taking care of the environment,’ explains the mayor, ‘and raise awareness of the importance of conserving our Natural Parks, dunes, coastline and the natural corners of incalculable value that we have in our town.’ A message that is important for the entire population but is particularly targeted at local schools where it gets a good reception. Along with the trees to be planted in the park, it is also hoped to plant nine in Cortes Valencianas. This is to replace those that were destroyed during the strong winds and rains of mid-December. The president of the rotary club, Inés Carrasco, thanked everyone for the donation of the trees and for the collaboration of AGAMED and the town hall.

News from the natural park volunteers The volunteers are hoping to celebrate National Tree Day on the 29th January. Members of the Asociación Rutas y

Caminos de la Sal meet on a Saturday every month at 10am. At their latest meeting matters relating to National Tree Day were discussed along with some additional important news linked to the Torrevieja and La Mata natural parks. The volunteers want to ensure that people are aware of changes to the usual cycle routes in and around the parks. These include the closure of small pathways to cyclists. The bicycles are causing severe damage to plants and the decision has been to restrict cycle usage in order to protect them. Signs indicating which routes this applies to will be erected. The volunteers would also like to issue a warning about processionary caterpillars. It’s coming up to the time of year when the processionary caterpillars are on the move. Already, one caterpillar nest has been spotted and walkers in the park are asked to take particular care. The caterpillars are especially dangerous for dogs and other pets as they may experience an allergic reaction to them.

This can then lead to the animal’s throat and mouth swelling and subsequent difficulties breathing. On occasions with very serious consequences. As we, hopefully, look forward to warmer weather, the volunteers would like to include a reminder to all those who walk in and enjoy the park with their dog. It is important that dogs are kept on a lead as there are now nesting birds at ground level. Suzanne O’Connell

SAD LOSS OF MARIE JOY DAVIS It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Joy Davis. Marie was one of S.A.T. Animal Rescue’s longest serving volunteers. Marie and her husband, Mike, will be known to many people through their entertaining variety shows, held in Torrevieja. These shows raised many

thousands of euros for S.A.T. over a period of 20 years. Marie joined the small band of volunteers in 1993 and adopted S.A.T’s first rescue dog, Toby. The couple gave their time very generously and helped in many different ways to support the charity. Marie will be very greatly missed. Suzanne O’Connell

Caught on camera: hidden sugar in the food we eat A new Spanish initiative plans to use photography to show how major brands sweeten their products. For example: a Danone 0% fruit yogurt contains four cubes of sugar; a 200ml carton of Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona’s tomato sauce, even more. A 50g helping of Kellogg’s cereals has four-and-a-half, while a Starbucks Mocca Blanco Venti with cream and chocolate syrup comes in at a whopping 20 cubes. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends consuming a quarter of the average amount of sugar that is consumed in Europe, which would take us down to 25g a day. But we are rarely aware of the amount of sugar we are putting into our bodies. Either we don’t read the labels, or we don’t understand them, despite the fact that sugar can be addictive and too much of it can lead to diabetes, obesity, dental problems and heart disease. This general lack of awareness prompted Spanish photographer and healthy-eating advocate Antonio Rodríguez Estrada to set up SinAzúcar.org, an initiative that publishes photos of products along with their sugar content alongside them, measured in an easily understood unit: the cube. “One of the reasons we have an obesity epidemic is the amount of processed food in our daily diet,” explains Rodríguez Estrada. “SinAzúcar.org is trying to make the hidden sugar in these processed foods visible in a simple and graphic way that can be easily shared on

the social networks. It’s my grain of sand to help improve consumer habits.” Although the US website Sugar Stacks or the Instagram account @dealerdesucre have been drawing attention to the problem for some time, Rodríguez Estrada’s initiative focuses on Spanish products while the glossiness of his photos deliberately imitates a promotional style. “The food industry seduces the consumer by dressing their products up in gloss,” says Rodríguez Estrada, who has just completed his studies in sports nutrition at the Spanish Institute of Health and Nutrition Sciences. “If we want to fight this kind of marketing, we have to use the same weapons they do and create attractive images that get the message across effectively.” Rodríguez Estrada started by publishing photos of products loaded with sugar, such as fizzy drinks, but he soon switched to photos of products with surprising amounts of sugar, such as tomato sauce or baby food. In fact, he has decided to make a point of drawing

attention to the sugar content in foods people believe are “safe,” due to the fact they are marketed as healthy, carry the 0% sign, or have been endorsed by medical institutes with questionable scruples. To calculate the amount of sugar in each product, Rodríguez Estrada refers to the information on the label. When it comes to more generic foodstuffs such as sliced bread, cheesecake, chocolate donuts or sweets, he uses one brand as a reference. Each of his sugar cubes weighs 4g.

Food for thought So now we have Rodríguez Estrada’s images to make us think twice about offering our children an energy drink, cookies or cereals; but how have we grown so ignorant of the amount of sugar in our food? “One of the results of sugar abuse is that the sweetness threshold for our taste-buds rises,” says Rodríguez Estrada. “For food to taste good, we need more and more of it. If we get used to sugary yogurts, milkshakes and drinks at an early age, by the time we’re adults, a cup of coffee containing 20 cubes of sugar tastes delicious.” SinAzúcar has been welcomed on social media sites by a number of dieticians and nutritionists, but Rodríguez Estrada hasn’t heard a word from the companies behind the products he has photographed. “None of them have contacted me so far,” he said, before adding wryly, “But every time I go to Starbucks I notice I get dirty looks...”

Local flu outbreak is now officially an epidemic The cases have doubled in the Valencia Community last week and the infection is now affecting 120 people per 100,000 inhabitants with children most affected. Nearly 95 percent of those affect have not been vaccinated and doctors are warning that the epidemic will continue to increase over the next two weeks – an epidemic is when 80 people are infected in 100,000 inhabitants. The data was announced by specialists in the Sant Joan hospital and the professor of Preventative Medicine and Public Health in the Miguel Hernández University, Ildefonso Hernández, in collaboration with the Valencia Society for Family Medicine. The Counsel of Health has a different mediation system, and considers the epidemic is 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Last week babies aged between 0 and 4 have been the most affected by the virus followed by those in the 4 to 15 year old age group; paradoxically although 95 percent of those affected have not been vaccinated the number vaccinations has risen dramatically. The number of coughs and catarrh are lasting longer than normal this winter, and taking as long as a month to cure. The outbreak is lower than last year with some 400 cases and also earlier, as last year the flu outbreak didn’t arrive until the middle of March. According to Ildefonso Hernández cases in the Valencia community will continue to increase for two weeks, while elsewhere in Spain the numbers of cases will fall next week. The Emergencies service at Torrevieja Hospital has been “overwhelmed” since last Friday due to the cold snap in the Vega Baja and the flu epidemic, with some patients being left in observation for up to 40 hours waiting to be admitted. This is according to the Workers Committee of the hospital, which in a press

release demanded more personnel and resources for the Emergencies service. The Emergencies workers say that the Nursing Management has proposed that they work extra hours to cover shifts but they replied this was not practical because they are already overwhelmed

Next year, get a flu jab!

from their own working day and the lack of available cover provided by the Collective Labour Agreement. The Committee has requested a meeting with management to see if they have a contingency plan but said the situation had not changed by the time the press statement was issued. They insisted that more personnel are needed urgently in all categories of the Emergencies services provided, from doctors to admissions, in order to offer residents the service they deserve. They are also concerned whether management have a plan in case the hospital becomes completely full and there is nowhere to put patients, as this has happened in previous years.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE For once the euro had something up its sleeve to ensure that Brexit and Trump did not entirely monopolise the financial headlines. On Thursday Mario Draghi confirmed that the European Central Bank will continue with asset purchases and ultra-low interest rates until the end of the year. In response to Germany's call for a faster return to "normal" monetary policy he said "just be patient". Despite this dovishness from the ECB the euro still outperformed the US dollar, strengthening by half a cent. The week's surprise winner was sterling, which added a net one and a quarter euro cents. Surprisingly, its gains were the result of a speech in which the Prime Minister said Britain would be leaving the single market. Investors had been primed to expect the news and they appreciated the new clarity. They particularly liked the idea that

parliament would get a vote on the eventual deal. In the run-up to inauguration day the dollar showed none of the verve that had taken it higher at the end of last year. Investors' enthusiasm for the Trumponomics that would bring tax cuts and infrastructure spending was overshadowed by their nervousness about the Trumpolitics which threaten swingeing import taxes and trade wars. Theresa May's Brexit speech on Tuesday was sterling's unlikely saviour. Although she said Britain would be leaving the EU entirely, single market and all, her main points had been leaked the previous evening so it did not come as a surprise. Investors were relieved at the idea of a phased implementation and liked the idea that parliament would get a vote on whatever deal is hammered out with Brussels.

More EU deficit cuts likely this year Brussels has some good news and some bad news regarding Spain’s budget for 2017. A European Commission assessment released today (Tuesday), shows that the Spanish budget meets EU requisites “in general terms.” But it also notes that Spain will overshoot its deficit target by two-tenths of a percentage point, and warns that the government “must be ready to approve additional measures.” Spain has already tweaked its fiscal policy by approving tax hikes, but even this will probably not be enough to bring the deficit down to the target of 3.1 percent, says the study. Instead, it will be closer to 3.3 percent, representing excess expenditure of €2.1 billion. If so, it would be the sixth time that the Mariano Rajoy administration has failed to meet its EU targets in six years. And the Commission feels that Spain will miss its goals again in 2018, when the deficit is expected to be 2.8 percent of GDP instead of the agreed 2.2 percent. Based on these estimates, the Commission is asking the Spanish government to “be ready to take additional measures” if the deviations “entail a greater risk” of failing to meet targets. In other words, if the Commission’s forecast is correct, then Rajoy will be forced to either introduce further budget cuts or raise taxes in order to balance the accounts. Brussels is forecasting GDP growth of 2.3 percent in 2017 – in line with IMF predictions – while Madrid

is offering a more optimistic 2.5 percent. These twotenths of a point can make all the difference between meeting deficit targets or missing them again, a year after Spain narrowly averted sanctions for its constant overshooting. Even though one of Rajoy’s campaign promises – made in the Financial Times, no less – was not to raise taxes, the first budget of his second term in office is pointing the other way. Spain had been told to make “structural” adjustments – those that are independent of the economic cycle at a given moment – representing 0.5 percent of GDP (around €5.5 billion). To do so, Madrid is planning hikes on corporate tax, alcohol, tobacco, sugary drinks and emissions. And if further measures are still required, everything indicates that fuel prices will be next in line. Although the document does not say so, Brussels is also concerned about Rajoy’s ability to reach congressional deals on budget issues, given that he heads a minority government and faces an opposition that is openly hostile to further cuts. Adding to the Commission’s worries is the fact that several political groups in Spain could ultimately work together to repeal the labor reform. “That would be terrible news and would place the Commission on alert again,” said a high-ranking EU source. “But Spain has ceased to be a problem for Brussels in a year of elections, and with Donald Trump encouraging a trade war with the US.”

bottom. Do not let the pot sit directly in a saucer or puddle of water.

Water Citrus trees are great in the garden. They look fabulous, have beautiful sweet smelling flowers, and provide wonderful fruit, good news is there are citrus for even the smallest garden or terrace. You can grow them in large pots, and even though they are small, dwarf citrus trees can produce a very reasonable harvest. Citrus trees are from the Rutaceae family and are common in gardens all over Spain. They form small, compact evergreen trees, are usually slow growing and have a shallow root system. The best thing about citrus is that they are fairly easy to grow and need little pruning. All varieties ripen slowly and fruit can be stored on the tree to be harvested over months. Remember that citrus love a hot sunny spot and plenty of water. If you are planting them in a pot, use good quality potting mix and feed regularly. Watch for pests and diseases because they can be prone to sucking insects and citrus leaf miner.

This will allow for some settling and ensure water drains away from the trunk. Fill in the remaining hole with a mixture of compost or potting soil and the soil from your garden. Citrus trees like a rich well-draining soil. If you are planting a dwarf citrus in a pot, use straight potting soil and fill it in to a similar level. However, do not fill the pot to

Planting

the edge. Leave some room at the top to allow space to water thoroughly. Place the pot up on blocks and be sure there are plenty of drainage holes in the

Dig a large hole, remove the tree from its pot and remove any burlap around the roots. Place the tree on a mound of soil. Add or remove soil underneath to adjust the height so that the crown (the transition from trunk to roots) is slightly above it.

For sweet juicy fruit citrus trees need sufficient water in the dry season. Water them thoroughly 2-3 times a week. If in doubt if your tree is getting enough water, use common sense and feel the leaves. If they feel cool and thick, the tree is fine, but if they feel dry and leathery, the tree probably needs a drink. Marc Vijverberg

Visit to HANOI with Vivalia Travel Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and the country's second largest city. Its population in 2009 was estimated at 2.6 million for urban districts and 6.5 million for the metropolitan jurisdiction. The city lies on the right bank of the Red River.

HANOI is the capital of Vietnam and the country's second largest city. Its population in 2009 was estimated at 2.6 million for urban districts and 6.5 million for the metropolitan jurisdiction. From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political centre of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế, the imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyễn Dynasty (1802–1945), but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam, and it became the capital of a reunified Vietnam in 1976, after the North's victory in the Vietnam War. The city lies on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is 1,760 km north of Ho Chi Minh City and 120 km west of Hai Phong city. October 2010 officially marked 1000 years since the establishment of the city. The Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural is a 4 km ceramic mosaic mural created to mark the occasion. Modern Hanoi On May 29, 2008, it was decided that Hà Tây Province, Vĩnh Phúc Province's Mê Linh District and 4 communes of Lương Sơn District, Hòa Bình Province be merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1, 2008. Hanoi's total area then increased to 334,470 hectares in 29 subdivisions with the new population being 6,232,940, effectively tripling its size. The Hanoi Capital Region, a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under its administration, will have an area of 13,436 square kilometres with 15 million people by 2020 Hanoi has experienced a rapid construction boom recently. Skyscrapers, popping up in new urban areas, have dramatically changed the cityscape and have formed a modern skyline outside the old city. In 2015, Hanoi is ranked # 39 by Emporis in the list of world cities with most skyscrapers over 100 m; its two tallest buildings are Hanoi Landmark 72 Tower (336m, tallest in Vietnam and second tallest in Southeast Asia after Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers) and Hanoi Lotte Center (272m, also second tallest in Vietnam).

Location Hanoi is located in northern region of Vietnam, situated in the Vietnam’s Red River delta, nearly 90 km (56 mi) away from the coastal area. Hanoi contains three basic kind of terrain, which are the delta area, the midland area and mountainous zone. In

general, the terrain is gradually lower from the north to the south and from the west to the east, with the average height ranging from 5 to 20 meters above the sea level. The hills and mountainous zones are located in the northern and western part of the city. The highest peak is at Ba Vi with 1281 m, located in the western part of the region.

Climate Hanoi features a warm humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa) with plentiful precipitation. The city experiences the typical climate of northern Vietnam, with 4 distinct seasons. Summer, from May until August, is characterized by hot and humid weather with abundant rainfall. September to October is fall, characterized by a decrease in temperature and precipitation. Winter, from November to January, is dry and cool by national standards. The city is usually cloudy and foggy in winter, averaging only 1.5 hours of sunshine per day in February. Hanoi averages 1,680 millimetres (66.1 in) of rainfall per year, the majority falling from May to September. There are an average of 114 days with rain.

Old Quarter Hoàn Kiếm Lake by night The Old Quarter, near Hoàn Kiếm Lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specializing in a particular trade, such as silk or jewelry. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân Market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening. Some other prominent places are: The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), site of the oldest university in Vietnam 1010; One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột); Flag Tower of Hanoi (Cột cờ Hà Nội). In 2004, a massive part of the 900-year-old Hanoi Citadel was discovered in central Hanoi, near the site of Ba Đình Square.

UPGRADES - GOOD OR BAD ON THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME? Whenever you’re deciding on an upgrade, you need to think of the bigger picture, not the immediate solution to your family’s lifestyle and needs. Some upgrades will add value to your home, whereas others, are not worthy contenders. This time of year, if you only have an open balcony, you’re probably struggling to find somewhere warm to sit during the day, especially if you don’t want to turn on any heaters inside the home. A great addition to your property, would be to add on a Sun Room. This is usually created by installing windows to an existing balcony. Ladders versus stairs. You may think this is a no brainer, and that stairs of course are an added value feature. “Who wants to go up ladders to get to the first floor?” I hear you ask. Well, I thought that too, but I have also seen a home with some beautiful upgrades on the ground floor, but when I had to go “upstairs” to see the rest of the home, I thought I was going to go “up some stairs.” Never assume! I turned down their hallway and there, right in front of me, was a ladder! That was the access to the first floor. If you are going to the effort of upgrading the entire home by adding more bedrooms and bathrooms, instead of installing a ladder for access, please build a full staircase! You need another bedroom, but the only access would be through one of the existing bedrooms. This may seem like no big deal for your family dynamics, but for any potential buyer, this could be the deal breaker. If you are going for an upgrade by building on an additional bedroom, having to pass through one bedroom to get to the other is not practical. If this room doesn’t have a window, it can’t even be classed as a bedroom when the time comes to sell. Bathrooms and kitchens. These are the most popular upgrades any homeowner can make. If your upgrade is a large investment, it could take quite some time to recuperate that money. I did see

a house the other day that had a high end kitchen imported from Holland. This cost more than the whole house altogether, making it practically impossible to ever recuperate the money invested. Buyers love updated kitchens and bathrooms, so as long as they are a sensible upgrade. So when you’re planning on any upgrades, take a minute to answer my question to you. “Is your project not only going to make your home more comfortable, but will it add value to your investment too?” *Always check with the relevant Town Hall, Architect or President of your community, on any possible planning restrictions in your area. The Monuments Man Channel 4 - 10.00pm

George Clooney's fact-based and star-strewn Second World War movie sees a group of British and American art experts forming a unit to prevent the Nazis from destroying a generation of European culture. Writer/director Clooney stars as the leader of an unlikely gang including John Goodman, Bill Murray, Hugh Bonneville and Matt Damon, none of whom are in peak physical condition but all sharing the common goal of fighting to keep art and architecture out of Hitler's grasp. The film is serious about the importance of safeguarding the artefacts of civilisation, but finds space for some humorous character interactions, and Damon's character gets a love interest in Cate Blanchett's museum curator. Clooney directs with clear respect for the real people who inspired the film. Network premiere.

This biographical period drama cleverly mixes reality and fantasy to tell the real-life story of how people and events inspired JM Barrie to write the classic children's story Peter Pan. A Scottish playwright befriends widowed mother Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and begins to regale her children with vividly imagined games, set in the world of Neverland.

Spain still tops in organ transplant Spain, a world leader in organ donation and transplants for the last 25 years, has once again beaten its own record in 2016, with an average 43.4 donors per million inhabitants (a total of 2,018 donors) and 4,818 transplants. Waiting lists in just about every organ category have fallen, from 5,673 patients in 2015 to 5,477 in 2016, a drop of 196. In total, last year 2,994 kidney transplants were carried out. For livers,

the figure was 1,159; for hearts 281; and 307 for lungs. There were also 73 pancreas and four intestinal transplants. The figures were presented at a press conference by Health Minister Dolors Montserrat during a visit to the headquarters of the National Transplant Organisation (ONT) last week, which has been headed by Rafael Matesanz for the last 28 years. He will be standing down in the coming months.

The ONT says the improved results come from the increased use of nonheart-beating donors – who make up one in four of people who donate an organ – along with better coordination with medics working in accident and emergency to identify possible donors. At the same time, there was a fall in the number of kidney transplants from living donors: 341 compared to 2015’s 388, probably as a result of more organs being

available from deceased donors. The ONT says that donors are becoming progressively older: 54.6 percent are now aged over 60, close to a third are 70 or older, and almost 10 percent are in their eighties; the oldest donor in Spain last year was aged 94 and provided a liver. For the first time, every region in Spain has provided more than 35 donors per million inhabitants, with more than 60 per

million in Cantabria, the Basque Country and Navarre, and more than 50 per million in Murcia and La Rioja.

Boxing Day Dip raises DEBRA funds Organisers would like to thank all of those who participated in the Charity Dip at Guardamar Beach on December 26th 2016. With calm sea and glorious sunshine, swimmers congregated at the Bar Isla Tabarca where Mercury FM provided entertainment free of charge in support of the charity. This was added to by singers Donny and Paul who kept the crowd entertained long after the event was over. The idea was to have fun whilst raising much needed funding for the Debra Organisation. Proceeds from the event were all put towards providing support for families with children who suffer from this terrible skin condition. Home support, nurses, medical research, dressings, training for parents and many other things are provided solely through charity contribution and so on behalf of all of these people a huge thank you must go out to those who took part and also those who donated much needed funds. Active Surfaces provided insurance and organised a collection and the raffle with prizes donated by Active Surfaces, Pick n Pay in Guardamar, Female Focus, Ibex Insurance and Bar Isla Tabarca. The total amount raised was â‚Ź1,451.94

Portugal protests against Spain nuclear waste near border Portugal has accused Spain of stockpiling nuclear waste close to its border without evaluating the environmental impact, in a complaint filed Monday with Brussels. The dispute stems from the Spanish government's decision in late December to authorise the building of a nuclear waste depot at the Almaraz plant in central-west Spain, around 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the

Portuguese border. Lisbon contends that Madrid violated a 2014 European directive requiring states to “initiate consultations” on “potential transborder repercussions” to the environment in their public projects. “The complaint was filed this afternoon,” a spokesman for the Portuguese environment ministry told the Spanish press agency AFP.

Referring the matter to the European Commission is “normal when there are different interpretations of community legislation,” the foreign ministry said, adding it did not threaten the good relations between the two countries. Spain has seven nuclear reactors generating around a fifth of the country's electricity, whereas Portugal does not have any operating nuclear power plants, according to the world nuclear association. The subject of the nuclear waste was raised at a meeting in Madrid Thursday by Portugal's environment minister Joao Maros Fernandes. “We respect Portugal's decision and we await the decision from Brussels,” a spokesman for The Spanish energy ministry said at the time about the complaint. On the same day, around 200 people joined a protest in front of the Spanish consulate in Lisbon, Portugal which was called by the anti-nuclear Iberian movement.

John via email asks: Dear Aunty, please could you send me instructions how to change the keyboard layout in windows 10 in my spreadsheet from dollar to pound sterling , thanking you for your help. Aunty Says: Hello John. The way I have always done this in XL and Open Office is to right click on the column header (the letter) and choose “format cells” where you can change all sorts of number and text layouts. JD via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have an XP computer and all of a sudden I’m having problems printing my Nat West bank statements, they seem to only print part of the page and I’m assuming I have a problem with the printer or its ink cartridges. Is there a way of knowing if it’s a simple cartridge change because I don’t want to buy a new set of cartridges only to find the printer is knackered. Aunty says: Hi JD. The only way to check this would be to run the printer maintenance app that was installed when you loaded the CD

Technology

that came with your printer. There should be a few options including nozzle check and head cleaning which will likely fix the problem. I must stress that NO internet banking or purchasing should be done if you are still running Windows XP or Vista, as the Microsoft security updates have no ceased and your computer is wide open to hackers. Also third party companies such as Google and Mozilla have stopped support for their apps running on old discontinued versions of Windows, i.e. Firefox and Chrome. Brian from San Miguel asks: Hello Aunty. I think you have mentioned this before but I cant find it on any of your online articles. I have recently bought a new Lenovo from Media Markt but it was all in Spanish with nothing but junk and trial versions on there. I have finally worked out how to switch it to English and I have removed most of the annoying apps but now I want to transfer my programs, photos and documents from my old Windows Vista tower onto the new one. I would then like to dispose of the tower but I want to be sure that there is no chance of

51

anyone getting hold of my personal stuff or accessing any of my private login information. Is there a way of doing this and how much should I expect to pay a professional? Aunty Says: Hello Brian. Transferring your photos & documents isn´t majorly difficult but it will depend on how well you have your personal stuff organized, i.e. where you’ve saved your docs and photos. I would recommend purchasing a 32GB USB stick for around €15 and use it to simply copy & paste everything from one machine to the other. Transferring programs/apps from one computer to another is a completely different matter as they will normally have to be freshly installed from the original setup DVD and you may find you need to upgrade some of your programs. Once you are happy you have everything you need from the old computers you will need to properly wipe the old hard disks and maybe even remove and destroy them. I would expect to pay between €25 - €45 to have this done properly.

Any questions, you can email me at: auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and hopefully see you all next week.

Speedy inter-continental train travel

Diesel powered pollution Diesel-powered cars create more air pollution than buses and lorries running on the same fuel, according to a report by the independent International Council for Clean Transport (ICCT). In fact, small private diesel-run vehicles give off more than double the about of Nitrous Oxide (NOx) as multi-person communal transport vehicles using the same type of fuel. When the ICCT carried out research which showed discrepancies between emission data recorded in laboratories and 'real' emissions on the roads, the results sparked further investigations which unmasked the Volkswagen ‘Dieselgate’ scandal. Data from Germany and Finland were used to show that cars using the 'Euro 6' type of diesel – which complies with current air-pollution legislation – generated between 480 and 560 milligrams (mg) of NOx per kilometre, whilst buses and lorries using the exact same diesel type only let off 210mg per kilometre. The ICCT report concludes by stressing the need for road tests to calculate emissions, in addition to the standard laboratory tests, as the only way of assessing true NOx levels generated in

order to prevent or reduce them. These emissions tests will start to be introduced into European Union countries from September this year for private vehicles, and are already compulsory for lorries. The German government declined to comment on the ICCT's report, but recalled that it has been working on a 'cross-European level' since 2011 to install emission-readers on roads to complement the tests already carried out during the manufacturing process. The present emissions limit for cars using the Euro 6-type diesel is just 80mg per kilometre, meaning those measured by the ICCT are up to six or seven times over the legal maximum and would not have been allowed onto the forecourt if on-road NOx tests had been carried out when they were manufactured.

Madrid to Tangiers could be possible in an hour on a ‘Hyperloop’ intercontinental bullet-train. An ambitious and futuristic rail project which has reached the semi-final of a global competition could involve being able to travel by train from Madrid to Tangiers in the north of Morocco in under an hour. The first-ever transport plan linking continental Europe and Africa by land, according to organisers of the Hyperloop One Global Challenge, the high-speed bullet-train would travel at 1,200 kilometres per hour, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar through a Channel Tunnel type of structure, albeit a floating one. The competition has so far seen 2,600 entries by 35 teams from all over the planet, meaning the Hyperloop to Morocco has hugely impressed the judges so far to have reached the semifinals. A Hyperloop is a type of 'capsule' train in which passengers are half-lying down, and which is capable to covering distances at the same speed as an aircraft. The 25 members of the project team who designed the Madrid-Tangiers inter-continental rail link have a diverse collection of degrees and other qualifications between them, and have carried out work experience in some of Spain's largest firms including the Elizabeth II Canal, Airbus Group, Telefónica, Endesa and Repsol. Whether or not the train between two continents makes the final will not be known until May this year. The next step is for the Hyperloop One team to assess the 35 projects that have reached the semi-finals in order to recommend improvements, and the best ones will be picked for the next stage.

Quesada, Dry cleaning business, the Marco Polo, oldest dry cleaning business in Quesada-there’s only three? A unique 9am to 5pm business, fully equipped with all machinery ready for either commercial contracts like bars and restaurants, or for simple domestic use of trousers, jackets, dresses and skirts. The previous owners built this business up and sold all contacts for a substantial sum. I have full details of all contacts available in my office. This is a high profit ratio business to the right husband and wife team with get up and go. Rent is 500 euros a month, equal to 20 euros per day, assuming a 5 and half day working week. All anyone needs is common sense and the ability to work and network. For sale at 10,000 euros. Further details telephone SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours, or 672 366 275 any reasonable time. Benijofar, restaurant Auberge lease for sale. This highly rated restaurant, located within an arcade location, right in the centre of Benijofar, is sadly for sale due to ill health reasons. The premises are fully equipped in every respect, and fully licensed too. The interior décor is of a very expensive high standard, the basic details are as follows. 44 covers inside, space for another 20 outside. Huge fully fitted stainless steel kitchen, with two separate storage areas. Full air conditioning throughout. 139 square metres construction, which is over 3 times the size of my office! Two disabled W.C.s. Very reasonable rent of 28 euros per day. Underground parking space for owners car. These premises are turnkey and go for whatever choice of foods the new owners proposed to trade as. The Restaurant has been established over 5 years with excellent reviews on Trip Advisor, what more can we say? Priced at 32,500 euros, to include all fixture, fittings, furnishings and kitchen equipment. Over 20 photographs available, simply contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779, 0ffice hours, or 672 366 275 other times. Quesada centre village area, kebab/pizza/burger takeaway business for sale. Established many years with outside seating of 20 covers, and in a prime location close to the main petrol station next to the Arches entrance. This business is fully registered, licensed by Rojales Ayuntemiento, and with a current hygiene licence. Fully equipped with all stainless steel appliances, and truly is a turnkey and go operation.

Owner is prepared to offer training, but this is not a question of needing al a carte chef’s experience. Rent is 750 euros per month, equal to less than 25 euros per day. Ample parking outside. Takeaway food is a high profit ratio business and cash only, need I say more? Reasonably priced at 20,000 euros to include all fixture, fittings and many years of goodwill. Reason for sale, owner wishes to retire. At present this business does not sell alcohol, which could easily be changed and I feel would benefit this business. Further details and photos in my office, please telephone SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours, or 672 366 275 other times. Quesada, bar/cafeteria for sale, currently trading with amazing views of the golf course. Outside terrace for almost 20 covers, inside covers for almost 20 covers, small but well fitted kitchen, interior decorations are truly first class, a very smart unit offering simple snacks to full meals within a very classy establishment. Rent 650 euros a month, equal to 21.36 euros per day. Fully licensed in every respect, price 20,000 euros. Further details telephone SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 2775 other times. Los Montesinos, 4kms from the arches. Rare bed and breakfast opportunity. Rurally located in 8,330m of land, with building of over 550m plus garage block. This property now has planning for use as a Bed and Breakfast Business. Without any further construction, but with 2 walls inside the property being moved, and one wall added, this property would make 8 en suite bedrooms, and a further 2 Motel style rooms, thus making 10 letting rooms. This would make a serious business, unlike other silly attempts with 2 or 3 rooms to rent. Plus enormous farmhouse kitchen, living room, dining room suitable for up to 20 covers, plus swimming pool, full oil fired central heating, mains water, electric, wifi, landline telephone, and a further 5,000m of land we have never used in almost 17 years! Vehicle, caravan, boat storage? With separate entrance. Owners accommodation inside the building of 2 beds, living room and bathroom. Adequate parking for 20 cars or more immediately outside the building. The property is easily located with main road advertising available. Price 600,000 euros. For further details please contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 275 anytime. Quesada village area, freehold shop, unit for sale, for investors only. The shop is a well established business of some years. They pay the current owner 1,000 euros per month, making 12,000 euros per year. Buy this shop and become the landlord with a 10% return for an investment of 120,000 euros. No bank can match this opportunity? Why receive peanuts on your money in the bank, when you could receive 12,000 euros per year? You become the owner landlord, and once a month you collect the rent of 1,000 euros? Not exactly rocket science or hard work either. Further details contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 275 out of hours. Quesada, lock up bar restaurant lease for sale. A very established venue, full stainless steel kitchen, outside separate storage space, separate function room, 48 covers inside. Tales from the Top Flight La Siesta Bowls Club ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

The stage was set in Stoke. People were turning up purely to see the record broken. How would he celebrate? Would he even get a game considering how infrequently he played all season? Would it be a moment that could never be forgotten and where, finally, the public accepted he could play a bit? Sadly Peter Crouch let the fans down and was unable to score his 100th Premier League goal, therefore denying the world his robot celebration. Fortunately, Rooney did give them something to remember, quietly and certainly without any commentary fuss slipping past Sir Bob’s Manchester United goal tally. The free kick was rather good and spared Juan Mata’s blushes as it was the Spaniard’s own goal that had made it look like another bad day out for Jose’s men. See, Jose? This is what happens when you ask Juan to do some defending. He get’s all confused. Rooney put out a tribute video after the game which, to be honest, looked like I’d knocked it up on Powerpoint. Come on Wayne, it was going so well. We all have to wait just that little bit longer now to see the big lad move around very slowly with creaky limbs. Yes, I do mean Crouchy’s celebration and not his general performance levels. I have a theory, which I suspect some of you are debunking before I have even explained myself. What if it is the Etihad that is turning goalkeepers into shells of their former selves? We can all agree that Hugo Lloris makes one, maybe two mistakes a season so to make them both within ten minutes of each other against City? It’s got to be the ground itself. I know Bravo agrees with me. If Lloris had made anymore errors there was every chance Pep would have offered him a contract there and then. Pep’s little “I am not worthy of the great, historic club that is Manchester City” routine nearly worked as they found themselves two goals to the good thanks to Hugo’s charity and then it happened again. The critical moment that could have seen City out of sight came and went as the most blatant push in the penalty area ever was seen by

everyone in the ground, bar the most two important people. Those that can actually give the penalty. Yes, they missed it and Spurs seized the game back in a way that suggests they have relocated some backbone since crashing out of the Champions League. Jesus was risen from the substitutes bench but the linesman was clearly an atheist, ruling the Brazilian debutant’s effort offside. It’s getting to the point where someone needs to ring the dilly ding, dilly dong bell to Claudio Ranieri. He’s tinkering and it is not working. Back three’s lead to a Leicester defeat, midfield diamonds lead to a Leicester defeat, everything leads to a Leicester defeat. They are in proper trouble and it might be time for Claudio to step aside and let someone save them from the drop. Does that sound over the top? Maybe, maybe. But once that Champions League adventure is ended by Sevilla, can you really see them remembering how they got there in the first place? Ranieri told the fans to blame him after the game. Claudio, I think they are one step ahead of you. David Moyes got everyone in Sunderland up for their continued battle against relegation by announcing that “new signings won’t make any difference!” There you go Moysey, yet another way to knock another 5000 off the next home gate. Well done. He’s right though, and Sunderland lost to WBA. Moysey’s team showed very little fight. Well, unless you count the right hook Djilobodji landed on Darren Fletcher. Hang on, wasn’t Big Sam supposed to be saving Palace? They still haven’t won under the former England manager and unless they get going soon he might lose his record of never being relegated from the Premier League. Imagine being Allardyce if he lost the England job and that record all in the same season. I don’t believe even Smug Al could have managed that. Everton won again and suddenly all is well in Ronald’s world. I am no football expert, as I often remind you, but even I know that if you manage to lose at home to Swansea then I wouldn’t be booking any open

top buses for the end of May. Liverpool managed to fight back from 2-0 down against Swansea only to feel sorry for ruining their opponents trip up from Wales and gifting them a third. A guy called Fernando scored twice at Anfield, so at least the Liverpool fans were able to go home feeling a little nostalgic. West Ham have become reasonably decent since Payet started messing them around. Andy Carroll netted a brace up at Middlesbrough as Slaven claimed another three points. Karanka took issue with the Boro fans booing the players off the pitch, claiming that they had at least scored at home this week. Before they entertained Hull at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea announced that they were happy for Costa to leave after all. Happy, that is, if someone wanted to stump up £130m for the eternal grump. Mind you, if you judge Costa by his goal celebration having scored the opener, maybe it was all paper talk? Either way, looking at the complex instructions being dished out by Marco Silva on the sidelines I would propose his English is a little bit stronger than “barely speaks any” which is the narrative lazily bandied about by our beloved pundits. Still, decent levels of English or not Chelsea won and made that gap at the top just a little bit wider. That Granit Xhaka seems a bit of a midfield liability for Arsene. He managed to get sent off yet again against Burnley, leaving his team with ten men for the last half an hour. Mind you, that ten men didn’t have to worry too much as Burnley seemed content to toddle off with a 1-0 defeat rather than try and get back in the game. But Dyche was setting a trap, and a very clever one at that. With the game looking like it was fizzling out Burnley won a nailed on penalty in injury time. Genius Sean, genius. Arsene got sent off, Gray scored and Dyche grinned. Arsenal and Chelsea is a crucial match in the title race, Arsene? Do me a favour. You’re not in a title race. Sorry, what’s that? Arsenal got a penalty too? Sorry, didn’t see it. I was too busy writing all that. Maybe the game against Chelsea is worth checking out after all.

The Apollos continued their challenge for promotion by the narrowest of wins way at La Marina Pathfinders the overall shots score being 104 shots to 103 in favour of the Apollos. Two matches were drawn with score being 17 apiece whilst the 1811 win by Robert and Ann Heath with John Ball being the highest margin victory.Barbara and Jack Cooper with George Richardson managed a narrow 17-15 win against their opponents this ensured that La Siesta piccked up 8 points to La Marina’s 6. The Pioneers entertained promotion challenging Quesada Diamonds and this showed in a resounding win for the Diamonds by 152 shots to 85.The winning rink for The Pioneers was achieved by Dennis Andrew,Val Dalton and Fred Charman by 21 shots to 19 which included nearly getting a hot shot with 8 points scored on one end. The overall points being 12-2 to Quesada. In the Fed 4’s the Hoopoes travelled to Montemar Picadors in windy and cold conditions and came back with a 6-2 win by 62 shots to 48 with the winning rinks

being Barbara and Jack Cooper with Bill and Sue Jordan 27-10 and Val Dalton,Jean Hepehi with Florence and Mike Edwards winning 28-14. On Wednesday morning the Winter League match at home to La Marina was postponed due to snow.Yes,snow. The fixture has been re-arranged for the following Sunday. Due to the inclement weather the Blues match has been postponed and with the Golds having a bye nothing further to report this week. By Rod Edgerton

Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

When Novak Djokovic crashed out of the Australian Open it looked like Andy Murray was going to start 2017 cementing his place at the top of the world rankings. Unfortunately for Andy, that cement seemed to be in his trainers as he was despatched by world number 788 Mischa Zverev. OK, he isn’t really the world number 788 but he may as well have been judging by the size of the

Mischa Zverev

reaction. Maybe Federer can get that final Grand Slam he so desires? Dan Evans did alright, for a Brit abroad. Johanna Konta is still in the women’s draw so maybe she can take some off the heat of Sir Andrew. England managed to win a game of cricket in India. Naturally, it was the dead rubber as India had already cleaned up the ODI series but hey, a win is a win. Ben Stokes took the acclaim, but nobody really cares. We lost the Tests and the ODIs. Wales have announced that they would like to play their Six Nations home games indoors. I know the weather in Wales can be quite grim at this time of year so that sounds like an excellent idea. Ronnie O’Sullivan met Joe Perry in the UK Masters snooker final at Ally Pally. Having got his tip fixed after his semi final win, O’Sullivan looked in mixed form until the evening session. Then, it is fair to say, he decided he wanted to win and strolled past Perry, wrapping it all up in time to be home for Match of the Day 2. The victory gave him a record 7th Masters title, making him the actual master.

Sergio Ramos keeps Real Madrid ahead ABBEY ANGLING This week’s 3rd round of the Abbey Angling cup was fished on the El Bosquet Complex on the 17th January; it was transferred from Murcia due to the state of the road on the match Stretch. With rain forecast the back channels 1 and 2 were not pegged, and fishing was difficult because of the strong cold wind blowing. Dave Hoare making the best of his draw on the oblong, catching fish at thirteen metres on maggot to win on the day with over 7kgs, our new member Alan Smith made a good start by taking the second spot with just over 6kgs. 1st Dave Hoare with 7.640kgs 2nd Alan Smith with 6.060kgs 3rd Bill Reade with 4.320kgs All fishing the pole using maggot and bread There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new

RODS & REELS Our 3rd round of the Winter Series was fished at Nancy’s on the 18th January. What a dreadful day weather wise, we had it all, rain, snow, and hail and it was bitterly cold, certainly the coldest day I have experienced in over 15 years living on the Costa Blanca. Water levels are now down with hardly any flow, and the fishing was very patchy, with only four anglers catching fish. 1st Bill Reade with 7.180kgs fishing the feeder using bread and maggot 2nd Terry Screen with 1.360kgs fishing the feeder using bread 3rd Alan Reid with 1.140kgs fishing the feeder using corn and bread There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 966729293 or 617283503

In their early game on Saturday, an injury-hit, and unhappy looking Real Madrid faced Málaga in the Bernabeu, having recently lost their cup-tie with Celta, and their last league match, against second-placed Sevilla. They continued to look out of sorts until Sergio Ramos headed home from a set piece, then slid in another soon afterwards. Málaga came back, however, a rebound earning them a goal through Juan Carlos in the second half, whilst nothing seemed to be going right for the leaders, Marcelo and then Modric going off injured, and goal chances galore going begging. Valencia, having got through a long list of managers, travelled the short distance to high-flying Villareal – and came back with three points! A terrible error by ‘keeper Sergio Asenjo accounted for one of their two goals. In Sunday’s first encounter, Sevilla made hard work of their trip to bottom club Osasuna, a crazy match finishing 3-4, with Iborra scoring two for his own side (Sevilla) and one for the opposition. Atletico Madrid travelled

to Bilbao to take on Athletic, and drew two goals each. In the last gamer of importance to the lead, Barcelona also visited the Basque Country, to the tiny Ipurua stadium at Eibar. They made short work of the opposition, winning 0-4, to stay third. Levante beat Numancia 1-0 to maintain their lead in the second division, with Girona remaining their closest rivals, albeit seven points behind. Locals Elche fought a meritorious draw away with Rayo Vallecano. In division 2B, a late win by Alcoyano saw them draw to within two points of leaders Barça B in group 3, and the other local side, Hercules, stay in third after beating Sabadell. In England, the focus seems to be moving towards the capital, as Spurs drew away with Manchester City, whilst Stoke also held their neighbours United to a draw. (Rooney, incidentally, scored the goal which took him past the legendary Bobby Charlton’s United record) Arsenal beat Burnley 2-1 (thanks to a 98th minute penalty) to move into second place above Spurs,

as Liverpool went down to a shock home defeat by Swansea. Leaders Chelsea were visited by lowly Hull City, and it wasn’t until seven minutes had been added to the first half by the ref that Diego Costa put the blues ahead. They eventually won 2-0, to remain well ahead in the championship race, but with West Ham also coming good at last, London’s fortunes are on the rise. England’s cricket team avoided a whitewash at the hands of India in the One Day series, despite a wonderful innings by Jadhav, and won the third match by five runs, after some very entertaining cricket. In the Australian Open Tennis tournament, Murrray went out to Zverev, whilst Nadal shows improvement and has moved into the quarter finals, as has my particular hero, the elegant Roger Federer, now 35, who eased past Nishikori in 5 sets. Garbiñe Muguruza remains hopeful in the women’s side, having also reached the quarters. Malcolm Palmer
