BITE SIZE Patient payout for NEWS: late cancer diagnosis Torrevieja’s natural park continues to celebrate its 20th birthday with more talks and events to spread information about the local environment. The next talk will be to raise awareness of the importance of Wetlands. The talk will be on Sunday 5th February and is called ‘Our wetland after the storm’. It will consist of a guided trip around the natural park to see at first hand the difference to the environment that the last rains have made. The tour will begin at 10.30am and is free. You can register on the website: http://www.parquesnaturales.gva.es /parques-naturales On the 9th February new nest boxes made and restored by the park volunteers will be sited around the park. The volunteers have made these boxes to encourage the Great Tits to breed in the park. These birds are particularly welcome as they eat the processionary caterpillar which can be so harmful to dogs and other pets. Each of the newly-sited boxes is numbered and will be monitored to check which turn out to be the best breeding areas.

The Valencian Health Service will have to pay out €100,000 in compensation to a woman who was living in Guardamar when it took 16 months to diagnose her with colon cancer, despite the symptoms. The Superior Court of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) has backed the patient’s case, brought by the legal services of the association ‘El Defensor del Paciente’, although they had originally been asking for a payout of €300,000. The association explained that back in 2011 this woman was aged 63 years old and went numerous times to her doctor at Guardamar Health Centre with fatigue and other symptoms and was treated for anaemia. Despite that fact that a test for blood in her faeces came back positive, the doctor ordered no further tests be

undertaken. Around 16 months later another doctor at the same Health Centre saw the test results and ordered a colonoscopy which showed that the woman had cancer. The patient started chemotherapy in August 2012 but by then the disease had already spread to her lungs, for which she was operated on but the tumour kept growing and she needed more operations and further hospital treatments. The woman made a claim against the Valencian Health Service and the seriousness of the negligence meant that a criminal case was opened against the doctor by a Torrevieja court. However, before the trial could be brought to a conclusion the accused died and so the case was shelved and the administrative claim was reactivated resulting in the payout being awarded.

Orihuela Medieval Market Following last year’s controversial decision to move the annual Medieval Market to April, this year’s event is to be staged next weekend, back in its traditional February timeslot. The popular event will be held on the 3rd, 4th and 5th February coinciding with the Moors and Christians Half Year Fiesta. 11.30am where theater groups, dancers and musicians will gather at the Town Hall. On Saturday, 4th January at 11:30am a reading of the proclamation will take place from the balcony of the Town Hall, an event that will also be accompanied by a ‘passacalle’ that will liven up the streets of the route. The Market will be divided into three parts, the Christian Zone, a Leisure Area and the traditional Arab Souk. Buses are being organised by Playa Flamenca Town Hall to accommodate those from the Costa who wish to visit the market without having to drive.

House fire death to be investigated

Damages claim refused As litigation and the opportunity for ‘No win, no fee’ grows, it’s perhaps refreshing to hear that some courts are encouraging those claiming to take responsibility themselves. This was the conclusion during a recent court case in Torrevieja. Following a fall on the dique de Levante, the pier which extends from the front paseo of Torrevieja out into the sea. It was pointed out during the hearing that walkers must take more care. A claim had been put forward by a resident who suffered cuts to the face after a fall and was claiming damages of €3,000 from the town hall for not having maintained the walkway. The Dique de Levante is one of the most popular stretches of walkway in Torrevieja. It extends to more than 1,800 metres between the Mediterranean sea and Torrevieja’s shore. Hundred of people a day walk along it. However, the court in Elche decided that the damage done from the fall, a fracture of one of the bones in the face could have been avoided if the pedestrian had a taken more care. The pedestrian was a frequent walker in the area and the court felt that the stumble might have been avoided as it happened during daylight and along a route that she often took. She was well aware of the condition of the planks she regularly walked on. This is not the only claim that has been put forward by individuals as a result of falls on the Dique. It is now expected to set a precedent.

Robbery at local school Robbers broke into the school Ciudad del Mar at midnight on Thursday 26th January and stole money from locked boxes in the canteen and parent/teacher association. Damage was also done to the school during the break in. Particularly heart breaking is the fact that the school were collecting money for a girl who currently suffers from a rare disease. According to the local department of education, everything points towards someone who is familiar with the building. Following entry they went directly to where the alarm was located and they also seemed to be aware of the Continued on page 6

Torrrevieja judiciary are currently investigating the death of a woman in a house fire in Callosa de Segura, close to Orihuela. The circumstances surrounding the fire point towards arson. It was thought at first that the cause was a gas bottle. However, investigators have since become aware that there were two sources of the fire. The first took a stronger hold than the second and it is unlikely that both could have been accidental. The alarm was raised by a neighbour at 12.25 am on Saturday 28th January as they saw smoke and flames coming from the property in Calle San Isidoro. Alongside the dead woman, one man was also injured. He had also been inside the property and was given

medical attention for smoke inhalation. It is hoped that his account will shed more light on what happened. Firefighters found that the woman was already dead by the time they arrived and no additional medical attention was needed as the man had received treatment at the local health centre.The property was already completely gutted by the fire and all that remained for the emergency services to do was to put out the flames. The fire has caused great consternation within the locality and on social media. The house was sealed by police officers whilst investigations continue. Suzanne O’Connell

Policeman accused of sexual abuse A policeman faces jail for allegedly abusing prisoner in Orihuela. Alicante Provincial Court in Elche is putting a National Police officer on trial this Thursday who is accused of sexually abusing a woman who was under arrest at the Orihuela police station. The Prosecution Service is asking for a punishment of three years in prison for the offence of repeated sexual abuse by

Spain rubbish at recycling According to a new report Spain is rubbish at recycling. The country lags behind in 14th place in the EU-wide rankings, which are topped by Germany, Austria and Belgium. It also appears that recycling rates are ‘stagnating’ in Spain despite an EU campaign. Only 6 percent more household waste was being repurposed in 2014 than in 2004, bringing the total up to 33 percent. The figures were published by the European Environment Agency, which has tasked EU countries to recycle at least 50 percent by 2020. Addressing Spain, the report said: “The percentage of recycling is stagnating. “Spain needs to accelerate its efforts if it wants to comply with the objective of 50% by 2020.”

Belgian athletes in Torrevieja Two Belgian athletes have been in Torrevieja training on the sports city tracks. The middle distance runners, Michael Sommers and Pieter Jan Hannes have been making use of the running tracks and the gymnasium during their stay here. Michael Sommers has been to Torrevieja before and is due to stay here on his current visit until 10th February. During his first week of training, Sommers was accompanied by Pieter Jan Hannes who is an Olympic athlete specialising in the 1,500 metres. He was world champion in his category in 2013 and represented Belgium in the Olympic games with a time of three minutes and 34 seconds.

Day of the pig takes place at last Following a delay in the event due to bad weather, La Mata’s 17th Día Internactional del Cerdo eventually took place. La Plaza de Encarnación Puchol was bustling with people anxious to sample their share of the giant barbecue. The event had been planned for the 22nd January but instead took place on Sunday 29th January due to the bad weather. It was still not the best of January days but this did not spoil what has become a truly international get together. Bouncy castles and games were there for the children and a bar for the adults. Altogether there was 400 kilos of meat to distribute, 100 litres of La Mata wine and 125 loaves of bread. It was estimated that 2,500 people would take part. What is particularly amazing is that this huge barbecue is free. The proceeds to help fund it are partly collected from the raffling of hams at the end of the occasion. Those who take part know to expect to queue for their free serving. Others prefer to bring their own barbecues and cater for themselves whilst enjoying the atmosphere of this unusual event. Let’s hope next year the weather is a little kinder. Suzanne O’Connell

A second tanatorio or crematorium is near to completion in Torrevieja. It is expected to open by the end of March and has five rooms. The tanatorio is on the Casagrande industrial estate and will have cost 1.5 million euros to construct. The project is an investment from the group ASV which also manages Torrevieja’s existing tanatorium. The project has been underway for more than a year and now the outside structure is complete with just internal fixtures and fittings to finish the project. The 31st March has been suggested as a possible opening day but this may yet change. The facility is on ground floor level to ensure accessibility and there will be five rooms, one of which will be a larger facility. The total size of the plot is 2,600 square meters. In addition the mortuary

will have two chapels and a confessional. There is a car park for fifty cars but there is no crematorium on site. The licence to open the building had been granted by the previous government in June 2015. There had been others bidding for the same type of facility. There is a particular demand for this kind of building in the area due to the age of the population and the number of people who have settled here of older years. Every year in Torrevieja there are a thousand people who die and who pass through the existing, ‘La Inmaculada’ tanatorio. In recent years this mortuary, close to the park of nations, has struggled to cope with the numbers and there has been recourse to facilities in Orihuela, Callosa de Segura, Guardamar and Catral too. Amanecer school reopens Captura There were many casualties following the bad weather in Torrevieja. One of them being the Amanecer school. The school provides temporary accommodation and its premises were closed due to leaks and concerns about the impact of water on electrical installations. The school reopened again on the 25th January after being closed for almost a week to its students. The councillor for education, José Hurtado explained that municipal technicians have checked the building including the electrics to ensure that everything is now functioning correctly and that there is no danger to students. The Headteacher of the school confirmed that during the heavy rain there had been water coming into the classrooms and frequent cuts in electricity which had caused them to alert the local police. The water on the floor as well as fears about the electricity supply contributed to its closure. Following inspection it was determined that the cuts to electricity were as a result of humidity in the electricity boxes and it

was recommended that classes should continue to be suspended from Friday 20th January to reopen once more on the 25th. A swift clean up operation with additional hours provided by cleaning staff meant that the classrooms were ready for occupation on the 25th and lessons could begin again as normal. There are plans to find a new site for the school that are ongoing. Suzanne O’Connell

fugitive sentenced Operation Captura fugitive sentenced after pleading guilty to possessing indecent photographs of children Matthew Sammon, one of the British fugitives from the Operations Captura campaign arrested in Spain, received a jail sentence on Wednesday 25 January after being extradited to the UK. Sammon was located in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, Spain, the same day his details were released to the public as part of the Operation Captura campaign run by the UK’s National Crime Agency and Crimestoppers in October 2016. He was arrested by the Spanish National Police after a tip off from a member of the public. He received a sentence of 2 years and 6 months at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday 25 January, after pleading guilty to making indecent photographs of children and possessing indecent photographs of children. At the time of arrest, Sammon was the 77th fugitive to be arrested out of 96 publicised through Operation Captura. British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley commented “The arrest, extradition and sentencing of Matthew Sammon, would not have been possible without the valuable tip off from a member of the public in Costa del Sol, and without the excellent cooperation between the Spanish and British law enforcement authorities. The sentence this week shows the value of the Operation Captura campaign, and Spanish and British authorities will continue working closely together to tackle crime.”

Court to investigate electricity rise Civil prosecutors at Spain's Supreme Court have opened an inquiry into the historic electricity price hike which came into effect recently, right in the middle of Spain’s coldest spell in five years which has seen snow on Mediterranean beaches for the first time since 1983. The court prosecution service says it wants to investigate the reason for the ‘successive increases’ in household electricity bills in the interests of consumer protection, something it has the freedom to do under the Law of Civil Judgment, reformed in 2014 to allow criminal court legal experts to take action under their own steam for the benefit of the wider public. In the last few weeks, the end price of electricity to the consumer has shot up to levels not seen since December 2013, and those who pay a fixed monthly quota adjusted twice-yearly are now seeing from their ‘information only’ bills that their consumption is way above this set figure. The National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) is investigating the matter to see whether providers are

operating an illegal monopoly, whilst the Ministry of Energy, tourism and digital agenda, led by Álvaro Nadal, is also looking into the matter, bowing to pressure from consumer groups and the government's opposition. The wholesale price of electricity exceeded €100 per megawatt per hour at peak time of 9pm last Wednesday, according to market operator Omie. The level is the highest reached since March 2014. Homeowners are being warned by consumer associations that their electricity bill for January could rise by 20percent. Electricity use has rocketed by 113 percent across the country as a result of the polar winds which hit the mainland and Balearic Islands over the past few weeks, bringing temperatures ranging from -10ºC to -21.5ºC overnight and leaving four inches of snow on beaches in the provinces of Alicante and Valencia. Minister Nadal says the problem has been ‘lack of wind and rain’, both of which generate electricity very cheaply. Providers have had to resort to combined power

sources such as fossil fuel and natural gas, which are far more expensive, Nadal explains. He announced two days ago that he intended to launch a series of measures to increase competition in the gas supply market in order to achieve better prices for end consumers, which would generate the knock-on effect of bringing down electricity bills where utility boards had to use gas to create power. Current electricity prices, which soared last week, sit at €88 per megawatt (MWh) per hour, having already risen in the past year to €85.79 per MWh. Electricity reached a record high of €91.89 per MWh in midDecember 2013 at off-peak times and €98.69 at peak times. The price of actual power to the end consumer is only around 35 percent of their bills, with 40 percent being the standing charge and 25 percent taxes and charges, meaning it is very difficult to save money by reducing electricity use. For 2017, the government has frozen standing charges and taxes.

Secret tunnel found on Cala Mosca A resident has stumbled on a mystery structure on Cala Mosca, the last green area on Orihuela Costa where a developer plans to build 1,500 new houses. The structure is made of bricks and stones and descends around 10-15 metres at a gradient of 45 degrees leading to what appears to be a tunnel or cave. The person who made the discovery did not enter as to do so would require authorisation, adequate lighting and proper protection. Therefore no one is sure where the opening leads

could be of some archaeological importance and may be protected by regional or local laws. The developer has no excuse for not having declared it already. It is his legal obligation. “He has owned the land for decades and applied for building permission 10 years ago. The infrastructure of streets and pavements has been in place for several years, so he and his employees must know every inch of the land and be aware of the tunnels existence.

World Cancer Day A truly global event takes place every year on 4th February; World Cancer Day unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer. It aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action. Millions will unite next Saturday in one incredible Act of Unity and on this day, everyone who shows their support will raise vital funds for life saving research. Cancer is the biggest killer world-wide, however there are 200 cancer types and 65 million of us. With our support researchers have helped double survival rates in the last 40 years. Currently, 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which, 4 million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years). World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to spread the word and raise the profile of cancer in people’s minds and in the world’s media, as more than one third of cancers are preventable by adopting healthy behaviours. But we do need to keep researching to keep battling this disease as more cases are predicted over the coming years. In 2008 12.7 new cases were diagnosed resulting in 7.6m deaths, in 2012 there were 14.1m new cases and 8.2m deaths. It is predicted that in 2025 there will be 19.3m new cases and 11.5m deaths and by 2030 that will be 21.7m new cases and 13m deaths. Taking up this battle locally and supporting World Cancer Day is Maria and the Pink Ladies, fundraising on behalf of and in aid of Spanish anti-cancer charity the AECC. This will be the group’s fifth World Cancer Day as a charity and it will be the

fourth fundraising World Cancer day event held at Zenia Boulevard. It is hoped that, once again, hundreds of people will attend throughout the day and will make donations to help boost the coffers to support the AECC Early Detenction Programme, which offers subsidised cancer screening for men and women. Each year Maria and the Pink Ladies has raised around 1,800 euros at the event and so to get more than 2,000 euros this year would be a fantastic achievement and one which all the volunteers and working hard to try and achieve. Of course, as it’s an outside venue, much depends on the weather as well as the generosity of the local community.

All of the money raised on the day will come solely from donations made by members of the general public. In return the charity has Iris plants to give out in exchange for a small donation, as well as other AECC merchandise, which can be bought for a donation. Volunteers will be there from 12noon until 5pm and there will be entertainment all day from local artists. These include: Dan Davy, Rod Stewart Tribute, Jaz and Suzy Georgi, The Two-Ton Spice Girls Tribute, Janelle Gaskell, Totally Dance, Nikki G and Just Ollie. All hosted by Stevie Spit and presented by Simon Morton from

Sunshine FM. The event will feature a minutes silence at around 3pm in memory of those that

have lost their lives to Cancer. All of Maria's Pink Ladies and Panthers will be there to take appointments for Mammograms, smears, prostate and skin cancer checks. Meanwhile, a huge thank you from Maria and the Pink Ladies goes out to the Blarney Stone at Zeniamar for raising 2,500 euros. Yet again the bar organised a New Years Day Swim to raise money for the AECC and the cheque presentation was held recently. Cleaning up Local keep fit group on TV after the storms The weather might have calmed down now but there is still much to do in returning Torrevieja to normality. The storms raised sea level, took sand away from the beaches and destroyed temporary buildings and other constructions. They have also had a big impact on its salt industry.

Salt industry The production of salt in Torrevieja had to be halted after the level of the water rose in the salt lake and the area of production was flooded. There has been damage to the salt mountains as water has dissolved the salt at the bottom during flooding. This wasn’t the first time that the salt industry in Torrevieja had suffered from a deluge. The storms with heavy rain during the middle of December also had an impact along with that of recent weeks. More fresh water falling on the salt lagoon reduces the concentration of salt on the bottom of the lake which affects production. Torrevieja produces more than half a million tonnes of salt and is one of the sources of the cheapest and highest quality salt in Europe. Around eighty people in Torrevieja work in the salt industry which is run by a French multinational company. The strong winds have also impacted on the small boats which transport the salt from where it’s extracted to

where the salt is washed and stored.

Beaches The beaches in the area have also been badly hit. Those of Los Locos, Los Náufragos, and el Cura suffered as a result of high sea levels and powerful waves. The storms damaged the wooden walkways and access for pedestrians. Items such as litter bins and water taps have been damaged and destroyed. Many of these items had only just been repaired following the previous storms in December. The main access ramp to Los Locos beach was severely damaged and cannot currently be used. There have been other problems too in Torrevieja. Many old buildings, over 70 years old, particularly in the centre of the town, have been damaged further. In Acequión, La Punta and el Calvario, there are examples of degenerating building structures, including some that have had to be demolished. Some parts of the coast have been left without sand after the storm. In El Altet the first aid point was ripped off its foundations and bus stops have been destroyed. Flag posts have been brought down and homes on the front have been threatened. If 2016 was considered to be a stormy year, it looks as though 2017 is not going to be far behind. Suzanne O’Connell

Those of you who have been watching Bargain-Loving Brits in the Sun, you may have noticed some familiar sights or even faces in this series. The Channel 5 fly-on-thewall documentary follows Brits who have given up their lives to make a new start abroad and although the first series focussed on those living in Benidorm, this series ventures further afield to local areas such as Los Montesinos and Pilar de la Horadada. One of the people featured in this series is Anthony Pate, founder of Ant’s Fat Fighter’s fitness group, and winner of the Pride of Spain Community Spirit Award 2016. Based at Camping Lo Monte, this series follows Ant as he tries to grow his business and take Benidorm by storm with the launch of his ‘Water Disco’ classes at three venues - and run his 15 sessions a week in Pilar. Last week’s episode, number four of eight in the series, showed Ant’s fun loving and kind nature as he ‘treats’ his ladies to a mud bath with hilarious results. It seems despite his best intentions the ladies were far from impressed at the prospect of stripping of and smothering themselves in mud. Ant said: “Having watched the first series, I was keen to redress the balance and show that the Brits living on the Costa Blanca are hard working and support the local economy and pay taxes. Yes we have a wonderful lifestyle but we work hard for it. We are not all sitting in bars all day drinking or rummaging through bins to make ends meet!” Ant loves what he does, he loves life, loves people and his enthusiastic personality shines through as much on the camera as it does off. INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL MATTERS BREXIT: A POSSIBILITY OF FROZEN PENSIONS?

nfairly, in my opinion, British ex‐pats in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa do not receive index‐linked increments in their UK Government pensions. They are FROZEN at the level they started taking a pension and with uncertainty surrounding the conditions of the UK's European withdrawal, the Chairman of the International Consortium of British Pensioners has said “It is possible that British Pensioners living in the EU may no longer receive the annual increase to their state pension, as the UK government will no longer be legally obliged to pay it once the UK is no longer a member of the EU”. Here are some figures from a UK inflation calculation website: £152 in 1992 (25 years ago) would have become £300 per month in the year 2000 with inflation‐linked increments and would now be worth £477 in 2017. So imagine having retired in 1992 or even 2000 and having to live off either £152 or £300 in today's world because your UK Government pension was frozen. That is the reality for some of our ex‐pats in Commonwealth Countries. If you are receiving a UK Government Pension and are young enough to possibly live another 10, 20 or 25 years then this could be a major headache for you. WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Neither the British nor the Euroland statisticians had much to say for themselves. The monthly round of provisional purchasing managers' indices, in which the UK does not participate, indicated that activity in the â&#x201A;ŹZ private sector continued at a decent clip in January even if not all of the readings met expectations. In Germany consumer confidence improved while business confidence deteriorated slightly. UK retail sales fell in December, perhaps as a result of consumers bringing forward their Christmas purchases to Black Friday in November and Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy expanded by a provisional 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2016, slightly more than forecast. Politics, not economic data, shaped the fortunes of the dollar and the pound. Sterling led the field for a second week, strengthening by two US and two euro cents. Its saviours were the Supreme Court ruling that parliament must approve activation of the Article 50 EU departure process and the government's promise of a white paper. Investors demonstrated

yet again their preference for transparency over opacity. In Westminster the government's reaction to the Supreme Court's ruling that parliament must approve the EU departure process was positive for sterling. Investors welcomed the promise of a white paper that should further clarify Downing Street's plans for Brexit and beyond. In the US, pronouncements and executive orders of the new president were unhelpful to the dollar. His obsession with the numbers attending his inauguration worried investors, as did his readiness to quote "alternative facts" when the real ones don't suit. The prospect of a trade war with Mexico was another concern. The dollar took a weekly loss of two cents to the pound. It was unchanged against the euro. Economic data played only a minor role. British retail sales for December were disappointing while growth in the fourth quarter of 2016 beat expectations. There were no important figures from the United States.

An update on the mortgage floor clause article by Spanish Solutions Matters changed last week, and an agreement has been made between the government and banks. Banks have to contact the client within a period of 3 months from 20th January in order to offer an amount of money to settle. So they will contact all clients directly who are eligible. Clients must decide if they want to accept the deal or not. If clients accept, they go to a small mediation and they recover the money. If clients donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t accept the sum offered, then they have to sue the Bank in order to take matters forward. Spanish Solutions can help clients checking if the offer is any good or not and advise options. We can also help in the mediation proceeding, and of course, if necessary, we can help clients in suing a Bank. Spanish Solutions will charge an administration fee for checking the offer from the Bank and providing advice, and helping with the mediation. However, this is money that could be saved if a client can go directly to

their bank and the company is not in the habit of trying to cheat people. Clients may also need to pay for a power of attorney at some stage if a lawyer or third party is involved. With regard to the legal expenses, also mentioned last week, this is a separate abusive clause included by some Banks in mortgages. The banks are not forced to negotiate with clients (yet) for this, so any negotiation needs to be individual and will not be easy as the European Courts have not ruled yet, only the Supreme Courts in Spain. If you have this clause, Spanish Solutions can perhaps claim the expenses back using a letter, negotiation with the bank and possibly legal action. This claim will be a separate similar cost and definitely require legal assistance. They will require the invoices for the expenses to do this, plus the clause must be in the mortgage saying the client has to pay the expenses for setting up the mortgage. Call for more taxis in San Miguel The neighbourhood association San Miguel Arcángel addressed the City Council last November to request more licensed taxis for the town, following numerous requests received from residents and taxi drivers. San Miguel has only two taxi licenses to serve a population of 6,776 inhabitants, according to the 2015 register. The average taxi supply in Spain, according to INE statistics, is 15.4 taxis per 10 thousand inhabitants. According to this rule of thumb to provide an adequate service the number of licenses required would be nine, which is far from what is currently in existence. In addition, claims the Neighbourhood Association, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the population and its distribution across the municipality according to the official urban model. At least half of the population of San Miguel is aged over 50 years old, which means that they need better and easier access to private transport services. The older community is also spread between 12 urbanisations and the traditional town centre, with many not having vehicles or being unable to drive. Added to this is the high number of family, friends and tourists that flock

to the area each year and need an adequate taxi service. The Association believes that locals and visitors need taxis to transport them nit only to local amenities but also to several attractions and facilities in the surrounding area including: six golf courses, twelve restaurants in the traditional town center and six in the urbanisations, ten mechanical workshops, two Airports, the health center and hospital, local administration offices, beaches and leisure centers and neighbouring towns such as Orihuela and Torrevieja. San Miguel Arcangel is damning what it describes as the ‘incomprehensible silence’ of the municipal administration following the request. A spokesman said: “The Town Hall have grand and eloquent words about the promotion of the economy and local commerce but will not address the problems that taxi drivers, local residents and business professionals put on the table regarding this issue. Day-to-day issues facing the community need to be addressed, not just the large-scale projects that bring glory.”

First phase of Rojales new school finished For many years parents and children in Rojales have wished for a new school for Christmas and it looks like, finally, this year their wishes have been granted. Pupils in the first to fourth years at the Colegio Poeta Miguel Hernández – previously called the Principe de España – returned after the Christmas break to be schooled in totally renovated classrooms, which marks the end of the first phase of building the new school. The development company is now concentrating on completing the new main building, the structure of which is now visible. This building will house another six classrooms for the fourth, fifth and sixth

years of primary school students, as well as the school canteen and offices. According to the construction plan, the new school will be completely ready for the start of the 2017-2018 school-year in September after the third phase is completed. This phase consists of demolishing the old main building and constructing new sports fields and pitches. The work in Rojales is the first in the Vega Baja under the Valencian Government’s education investment plan, which also plans to build or renovate schools in Guardamar, Orihuela Costa and San Fulgencio.

The international auditorium being put to use The number of concerts held in the international auditorium in Torrevieja are few and far between but over the carnival period it looks at least as though the town’s people will have opportunity to see inside this grand building. This is the first time that the international auditorium has been used for this purpose and the next three carnival events will be staged there. The use of the auditorium has been precipitated by the closure of the municipal theatre. Without this venue for the events, the town is left with fewer choices for bigger occasions. The auditorium is a much bigger venue than the municipal theatre with a capacity three times as big. On Saturday 28thJanuary it comfortably held all

those wanting to see the crowning of the junior and senior Queen’s for 2017. The evening began with an honest take on Torrevieja by the comedian Antonio Ballester followed by dance group Payas re-creating their own mini fantasy to the delight of the audience. podium called ‘Dakota’. It included 4,000 peacock feathers, 500 duck feathers and fifty pheasant feathers. Not to mention numerous crystals and other glittering decorations. She was accompanied by an excellent drum group, Batuka Kimera of Alicante and a flautist who was a little put out perhaps when the IT let her down and the event had to be paused. The crowd were encouraging throughout and when the drum group appeared again to bridge the gap, they joined in, stood up and clapped. It certainly wasn’t a hitch-free night but overall, the auditorium proved to be a good venue, and many will have appreciated the rather makeshift bar which allowed you to at least get a drink during the interval. Other theatre venues do not usually have this facility but are better located if you want to nip out to a local bar for refreshments. Impressive as it might have been on Saturday night, it’s the processions that most people associate with carnival. The first will be held on the Sunday 19th February from four in the afternoon starting out from la plaza de Maria Asunción. On Saturday 25th February

the final evening carnival procession will take place setting out from 10pm. The carnival is also a competition with prizes awarded in different categories. If you weren’t there on Saturday night you can still enjoy other scheduled events in the auditorium including the Drag Queen competition on Thursday the 3rd February at the same time of 9.30pm with an entry of six euros. The third event will be on the 12th February

with the murgas competition. These are musical theatre performances which and are a combination of song and dance. Entry will again be six euros. If you would like tickets to the remaining International Auditorium events you can obtain themby going to the municipal theatre box office between 11am and 1pm or between 5pm and 7pm. Orihuela Costa property boom

The political party Cambiemos has criticised approval of 2,500 more homes, given the red light despite admission of negative effects for municipality. The opposition party has warned that a second property bubble is being created on the coast with plans to construct about 4,000 new homes in the short term in Cala Mosca and PAU-7. Councillor Marta Guillén said a modification to the PAU-7 project for 2,570 homes was approved by the Valencian Government in November and it will now go on public display before obtaining final approval. In addition to the 1,500 new homes planned in Cala Mosca this means more than 4,000 on the coast in total. “This exceeds the capacity of the area and will overwhelm services and infrastructures that are already inadequate,” she criticised.

She revealed that the Valencian Government approved the modification to PAU-7 despite its own admission that “this plan will generate negative consequences for the municipality”. It also mentioned technical reports which showed it would affect populations of eagles and owls, that the flood risks in the building area need to be evaluated and that the water resources are not enough to supply such a population increase. However, for Guillén the most negative effect is that this number of properties would compromise the planned growth of the municipality for the next 20 years. The Valencian Government’s official planning strategy sets out criteria for reasonable and sustainable growth, which says that if this plan and another project that is slated for PAU-5 are approved then no further growth would be possible in the municipality’s country villages, “where an increase in the number of buildings would be justified”. Although the Valencian Government admitted all these factors it has left it up to Orihuela Town Hall to decide whether to approve or deny the project. “The Town Hall is going to approve this as if it were just a bit of paperwork,” assured Guillén, who criticised that “the administrations just pass the buck between each other and then wash their hands of it”.

2016 has been a mixed year for Age Concern. They were delighted to finally reach their target and be able to purchase their new bus to provide muchneeded transport in the area. However, there was sad news over the festive season when Juliette Burr, their publicity officer, died suddenly on the 27th December. She will be greatly missed by her friends and colleagues. She was an executive member as well as a valued volunteer. The role that Juliette had of promoting the group was a very important one. Age Concern is a respected organisation on the Costa Blanca and provides many services to the elderly who live here. Their social gatherings as well as practical help, advice and information are relied upon by many people and fund raising and publicity is a major part of what they must do to ensure that funds continue to support these.

Events in 2017 One of the ways in which money is raised for them is through events held on their behalf. One of the first of these in the new year is that of the Reef Band who will be playing on February 4th at Casa Ventura in San Luis, Torrevieja in aid of Age Concern.

The gig starts at 8pm and tickets cost €5 each and a raffle will be held in support of Age Concern. If you would like to buy a ticket you can purchase one from the centre in Calle Paganini or call 966 786 887. You can also purchase or reserve your tickets by contacting the Reef Band themselves on their Facebook page. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night.

The opportunity to socialise and meet new people and maintain existing friendships is an important one. Starting on Friday 3rd February, Age Concern Costa Blanca will be open to people at 2pm who would just like to socialise and play games of cribbage or dominoes whilst enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. Properties are coming to the market every day for different reasons, and sometimes when people are left with a home in Spain, they don’t know what to do with it, or how to go about getting the paperwork in order. Inheritance in Spain is relatively easy, and providing everything is straightforward, it shouldn’t take too long to wind the estate up of a loved one. If you’ve inherited a property here in Spain, the first thing to do is, go and speak to a local Spanish lawyer. They will be able to give you a time frame on having the property registered in your name. Usually you don’t have to pay anything up front, as if you are intending on selling the house you’ve just inherited, they will let you pay their fees and associated taxes upon the completion of the house sale*. Allow approximately 3 months, once your lawyer has received all relevant paperwork, for everything to be registered in your name. Did you know that, even though your lawyer is winding up the estate, you could still start the process of selling the property? Well, you can! As long as you let your real estate agent know the circumstances, they will be able to find you a buyer in the meantime, then complete the sale once the inheritance is ready. Once you have seen your lawyer, you can help the selling process by taking the time to go through the property you have just inherited. Although this can be a very emotional time, it is something that is unavoidable if you are going to sell the home. Packing away any unwanted items is a process. You don’t have to decide what you would like to keep, and what you would like to donate, straight away, but box the items up, so that you can make your mind up later. This will at least de-clutter the home and make it ready for selling. If you’re not going to be living in the property whilst it’s being sold, then leave some air fresheners out. Keep the scent the same throughout the house, as you can overpower the

home if you have different smells in every room. As long as your real estate agent is aware of your reasons for selling, they can help guide you through, what some people find, a difficult time. So take one step at a time and don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask the Lawyer if they are prepared to wait for their payment until the completion of your home sale. Branch closures and redundancy at C&A Budget clothing chain C&A has announced plans to close down 23 ‘lossmaking’ branches across the country, which will involve 16 percent of its staff being made redundant. The Dutch firm, which has been operating in Europe for 175 years and in Spain for 34, says it plans to open other stores in the country but in different locations. As part of what C&A Ibera's general manager Domingo Esteves calls a ‘transformation and simplification plan’,

one branch in each of the regions of Navarra, La Rioja, Asturias, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and the Canary Islands, plus another two each in Andalucía, the Basque Country and Catalunya will close. Galicia and Castilla y León will lose three stores, and five will shut down in Madrid, plus a further five in Portugal. This may mean that the local stores here in Alicante province, including Zenia Boulevard, are safe from closure, but the company has yet to confirm this. The stores due to close for good are

Show your love by donating food this Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s February is the month of love, but rather than just treating that special someone, optical chain Specsavers Opticas are asking people to show their love for the most disadvantaged in their community by making a small food donation in February. They are collecting nonperishable food for the Spanish Federation of Food Banks throughout the month and hope residents will get behind the campaign. The Spanish Federation of Food Banks is a non-profit organisation which is fighting against hunger and waste and brings together 56 food banks throughout Spain. Each day they give out 419,000 kilos of food to the very needy members of society and have seen a massive increase in demand in recent years. In order to meet that need, they require donations from individuals, organisations and companies and Specsavers Opticas has taken up the challenge to make a difference this February. From the 1st to the 28th of February, anyone can drop off their food at their local store during opening hours. The Alicante Food Bank would particularly appreciate donations of oil, sugar, drinking chocolate and milk, although any donation is of course welcome. There are Specsavers Opticas stores in Torrevieja and Guardamar on the Costa Blanca.

info: 966 733 314 667 817 546 Skin Pigmentation Most mature adults will have some degree of skin pigmentation, usually sun damage, simply from playing outdoors in the summer sun as children. If you were a 40’s, 50’s or 60’s child sunblock wasn’t even invented and the damage that the sun can cause was little know about then. The medical term is photo ageing and in some cases this can lead to skin cancer and premature skin ageing. However all is not lost, as we can help to improve the pigmentation by using modern technology. This will cause the skin to shed some of the damage and certainly lighten or eradicate the pigmentation which is sometimes unsightly and can be embarrassing. It is true that if the skin is really damaged there is little to be done but age spots are relatively common and can be improved. We can use a variety of treatments to improve this aspect of the skin and these would include Skin Peels, Intense Pulsed Light and Radio Frequency.

However I am writing about this condition now as effective treatments must be carried out in the winter months when the skin is not exposed to strong sunlight. Normally a course of treatment is necessary, but don’t be put off by the sound of machines with unusual names and think it will cost an arm and a leg. This isn’t the case as most therapists would prefer clients to have proper treatments with well qualified and experienced therapists and so price accordingly. Good therapists will always offer you a free appointment to assess your skin, advise you on treatments and cost and then you make an informed decision. We probably get more enquiries about skin pigmentation than many other things simply because it affects so many of us. You can normally change the languages of most apps via a tools or option page which can normally be found from a menu along the top, or quite often a cog shaped icon. I have been a regular reader for ages and have learned a great deal from your column but I wonder if you can help me with this problem? A short while ago Windows 10 took it upon itself to do some updates and since then several apps fail to start, e.g. Firefox, Google Chrome, Skype etc. Each time I run one of these apps I get a message "Side by Side Configuration error" and in my wisdom I have tried to uninstall the apps but each

time it fails because the error message as above comes up. An obvious answer is to restore to an earlier date but unfortunately during the Windows 10 update all the previous restore points were erased. Thank you for any advice you can give me. This problem has been around for a good while and normally uninstalling and reinstalling any malfunctioning apps fixes this problem, but as you have multiple apps reporting this same error, then I think this may be a deeper Windows problem and a bit more serious. It would have been very easy for one of these geeky nerds to get your Wi-Fi password when they were fixing your computer so maybe get into the habit of changing your Wi-Fi password via your routers control panel (instructions sent via an email) To monitor your Wi-Fi maybe try the a free program called “Wireless Net Watcher” from www.nirsoft.net which will show you a map of any devices connected to your Olé router. I wanted to see who was connected to my internet and I soon discovered one of my East European neighbors had managed to crack my WiFi password and had been helping themselves to my precious bandwidth (and likely nosing around my computer) so I returned the favor and left them a little virus on their hard disk. Chinese New Year 2017: Year of the Red Chicken 2017 Chinese New Year begins on 28th January, 2017, the first new moon day of the first Chinese lunar month and this year is the year of the Fire Chicken or Red Chicken. Some web sites say 2017 is the year of the Rooster, but the Chinese Stem-Branch calendar says it’s a female, so definitely a chicken and not a rooster. Shiatsu for horses The first equine Shiatsu course held in Spain will help raise money for abused and neglected horses. Qualified instructors will fly in from Finland this March to lead a two-day introductory equine Shiatsu course – the first of its kind in Spain – at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, near Rojales. Instructor Susanna Tuisku, assisted by Rita Uotila and Anne Hakala, will guide participants through how to relax a horse and maintain its health using the centuries-old wisdom of Shiatsu. The pair kindly offered to donate net proceeds from the course to the non-profit sanctuary, giving local horse owners the chance to train and work directly with rescued equines while helping raise funds for the animal’s ongoing feeding and care. Rita has previously supported the rescue centre’s work from her home in Finland by donating tack and equipment, but said she wanted to do more. After seeing the benefits of practicing Shiatsu on her own rescued horse, Elli, Rita got in touch with Easy Horse Care co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding. “I am truly amazed at what Sue and Rod have accomplished at Easy Horse Care and how they have given a second chance to so many mistreated equines,” Rita said. “I hope giving Shiatsu treatments to the residents might improve their condition even further.” Sue said she was thrilled to see people from other countries joining the quest to improve

animal welfare in Spain. “It’s very inspirational that people believe in us enough to commit to coming over and helping with our horses, ponies and donkeys, while also showing local horse owners ways forward to help their horses,” Sue said. Conducted in English, the course will teach basic equine Shiatsu concepts, including how energy flows through defined channels of a horse’s body, how to treat the bladder and kidney meridians and how Shiatsu can be used daily with horses. A participation certificate will be issued upon course completion, allowing graduates to go on to further equine Shiatsu study if they choose. The course will be held on 11th and 12th March from 10am to 6pm. Just 15 tickets are available at €100 each, which includes hands-on practice with horses, printed materials to take home, a light lunch on both days and

Spain's car production recovers pre-crisis levels Spain’s production of cars climbed to 5.6 percent in 2016 to 2.89 million vehicles, returning to levels only seen just before the devastating economic crisis, the Anfac carmaker association has announced recently.

However, it warned that “the devaluation of certain currencies and the emergence of protectionist phenomena in various countries that Spain exports to” had impacted production in the second half of the

year, pointing for instance to Britain post-Brexit. Domestic sales also slowed during this period after state subsidies to buy new, less-polluting cars ended in July. Exports account for more than 84 percent of Spanish production, and did well in 2016, rising seven percent to 2.43 million units -- more than in 2007 before the crisis erupted, according to Anfac. But the association said that some countries had shown signs of weariness; such as Britain, one of the biggest markets for Spanish-made vehicles, as the pound has dropped in value since it voted to leave the European Union. Anfac said exports to Britain had been dropping around 16 percent monthly since September. “It's also the case in Algeria, where protectionist measures have contributed to exports from Spain dropping 72 percent, with nearly 20,000 less units sent to the country,” the association said. All big European carmakers have factories in Spain, where the auto industry accounts for more than 10 percent of economic output. The sector suffered its worst moment in 2008 to 2009 as the global credit crunch hurt demand for new cars across Europe. But production has since picked up and it is now one of the motors of the nation's economic recovery along with tourism and agriculture and food.

Disabled protest against Ryanair discrimination

The latest story to make news was that of Javier García Pajares, a deaf and blind Spanish student who was studying abroad in London. According to his testimony, Ryanair did not allow him to travel last Christmas, citing security reasons. “The case of our friend Javier García Pajares is proof of something devastating that it wants us to accept as natural. It is the moment to tell them that low-cost cannot be translated into fewer human rights,” said Cayo Pérez. CERMI also said that the European Commission should urgently change a rule related to passengers with reduced mobility that has been in effect throughout Europe since 2006. “This rule allows companies

that don’t have any social conscience to apply it in its worst version,” said Cayo Pérez. Ryanair denial Ryanair denied practicing any type of discrimination. “Thousands of passengers who need special assistance choose to fly with us every week, a service that usually takes place with normality,” a Ryanair spokesperson told the Servimedia news agency. The company also refuted the story of García Pajares. The spokesperson said that a customer-service representative asked the disabled passenger for documentation to make sure he complied with the security requirements and pre-requisites that allowed him to travel without a companion. “Once those documents were received, more than a week later, we confirmed that he could travel alone, although in the end he decided not to,” said the spokesperson. “We are proud of the service we offer to all of our clients and we will continue to make an effort to improve our service every day,” he added.

More than 250 disabled people have protested against Irish low-cost airline Ryanair at Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas Airport recently. The group accused the airline of “systematically and permanently” discriminating against disabled travelers by adding unnecessary obstacles to their flight process. The Spanish Committee of Representatives of Disabled People (CERMI) organised the protest after receiving numerous complaints against the airline for what it described as “multiple cases of discrimination”. “The airline conjures up harebrained security reasons and, without any kind of social commitment, excludes disabled passengers directly, either by not allowing them to board, or by obliging them to bring a travel companion at their own expense,” said Luis Cayo Pérez Bueno, President of CERMI. “It uses an abusive and discriminatory European rule to tell us, as passengers, that we aren’t welcome.”

The FA Cup was back in action over the weekend, giving us a break from seeing Liverpool spontaneously self-combust their Premier League title challenge. What we got instead, having seen Liverpool struggle in high winds at Anfield during the week was Liverpool being undone by a Wolves team that had a couple of lads that could run fast. Yes, that was the cunning plan devised by failed Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert. Defend well and get it to the quick boys. Credit to him though, it worked. Apparently some, but probably not the ones that know anything about football, Liverpool fans have started calling for Kloppo’s head. Many managers, not just Klopp, spent the weekend resting first choice players shunting the Cup down their priority list. Some got away with it, some didn’t.

Still, it wasn’t all bad for Liverpool. They may have proven they are a one Mane team, but their main Mane will soon be back in a red shirt having missed the decisive Senegal penalty in the AFCON Quarter Final defeat. You could almost hear Jurgen willing him to miss it on the commentary. Pochettino seemed to be on a one man mission to give the FA Cup the fairytale result that the competition desperately needs. Spurs found themselves 2-0 down against Wycombe and then, having got themselves level, 3-2 down once more. The League Two outfit had their collective hearts broken, jumped up and down on and then kicked over the touchline as Tottenham grabbed a late winner in the seventh minute of injury time. This week we fished the 4th round of the Abbey Angling Cup at the El Bosquet Complex on the 24th January. The mornings are now starting to get lighter and the evenings beginning to pull out, so hopefully with the longer days the water temperature will begin to rise and the fish will start to feed. This cold weather has put the Mullet off the feed and the weights are well down. El Raso Golf Society COSTA COBRAS RFC On Friday 27 January, 28 members of the El Raso GS met up for an early start at our home course la Marquesa, to play the monthly Stableford. It was a cold but sunny morning that improved as the day went on! Most had an average game but the winner by far was one of our longer established members, John Holland with an excellent 37 points. Only 2 of the 4 nearest the pins were managed on the par threes, Robin Richards on the 11th and Stan Low on the 17th. Bob Shorley won the best

front nine with 19 pts and best back nine went to David Valentine also with 19 pts. In third place Jan Shorley with 34 pts on c/b, second Linda Lynch 34 pts and first John Holland 37 points. After the game we went back to the Olde 9th in Quesada for welcome refreshments and presentations. Captain Marilyn welcomed new our members Carin van der Kruijs and David Horne and thanked Grant for providing our tasty hot snack. Our next scheduled game is on 24 February at Roda.

This week S. F. Costa Cobras RFC had a meeting to form a new committee and have people in the club and training that can take the club forward. With a range of new people and also members with a vast range of experience in the sport and committee work means the club can start to progress more. We also have a junior section to it as we feel the younger members are equally as important as the older ones as they are the future of the club. Shortly we will be nominating a local charity in San Fulgencio to support as we feel it is important to do this as by supporting the local community for them to support us as a club, which to date they have done so fantastically. We are looking to put a fun day on in April sometime to help attract more players and have also been ask to go over to the UK and have a training day with one of the top premiership clubs as a team etc, this will be for club members only, so definitely need more members. Soon we will be getting are training tops designed by Gecko Sportswear

Also have teams asking to come over on tour to play the Cobras, now to get the players in to carry this forward due to all the contacts that the committee have. We already have Old Brods vets coming over in March and have arranges a tournament for them thanks to Wondervra and Elche vets, played in Elche and then in April Cannock ladies and vets in Elche. But would be great to have the players so we could hold these games as a club. We are now training at the football ground in San Fulgencio on Monday and Wednesday from 20.30-22.00 and then meeting up at Power Pub in the town after training and using this is our club house. All the players are training at the same time, but once we get more juniors and seniors we will be doing two separate sessions. Everybody welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier, as we are based on the true

traditional ethics of the sport. “Vicky Heynes Memorial Cup” This was the second time we played for the “Vicky Heynes Memorial cup” sadly the sponsor, Tony Heynes, was unable to make it back to Spain in time for the competition. The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Imanyo’s where we did the draw, fifteen players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups A and B. The venue was Altorreal and as usual everything was ready and waiting for our arrival and the course was in very good condition. Winner of group A and overall winner was “I Want My Handicap Cut” Martin Gadney with 31 points, runner up of group A was Andy Godfrey 30 points. Group B winner was Dave Moore with 27 points, runner up of group B on count back was Chris Baillie 25 points. Out of the four nearest the pins it looks like we might have a new wine collector for 2017 as Graeme Forrest won three out of the four on holes 8, 10 and 17, he was only just beaten on hole 5 which was won by Martin Gadney.

JANUARY AWAY DAY We travelled down to Roda Golf for our January away day. The course was in very good condition considering the weather we have endured, with lightening fast greens. When we teed off we were greeted with sunshine, but also a cold wind, which made things unpleasant. Scoring not too good with 33 points being the highest score of the day. In the Gold Category Malcolm Anderson came in with 31 points, in 2nd place was Rodney Smith with 28 points and Arfer Williams in third place with25 pts. In the Silver Category Ken Hopkins had the top score of the day 33 points to win his Category. In Second Place was Andy Billings with26 pts followed in third place with23 points Rocket Ron.

Nearest the Pins were taken by M Anderson with hole 7 and 13 with Rod Smith taking hole 11. Longest Drive was won by Pete Wilkinson. Andy Stenning was best Guest We returned to Charlies Bar in Torretta 2 for refreshments and were greeted by a large bowl of Stew with bread which was
