King’s brother-in-law is jailed King Felipe VI’s brother-in-law Iñaki Urdangarín has been sentenced to six years and three months in prison for his multi-million public fund embezzlement and tax fraud scam through a so-called 'non-profit' entity he jointly ran. ■ MIREILLE TODDINGTON mireille@costablancapeople.com
owever, Urdangarín's wife – the King's younger sister Cristina – has been acquitted, but has been ordered to pay a €265,000 fine for tax evasion running into several million euros, which she has already refunded plus interest. Tax evasion, where the amount due is over €120,000, is a criminal offence which can carry a jail sentence as well as a fine – anything less is a civil offence which only attracts a fine. This meant Spain could have seen its first blood Royal in living history behind bars, but Urdangarín's sentence will see the first Royal by marriage in jail in modern times. The court is entitled to order him to go straight to prison without packing his cases, but legal sources say he may go to the jail in Badajoz, Extremadura, which is reputed to be a relatively calm, non-violent institution fairly lenient on its inmates. It could mean Urdangarín will spend his days sweeping the patio and mopping the corridors, with little or no hard labour. Urdangarín's co-director of the Nóos Institute, Diego Torres, has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison and a fine of over €1.72 million. The Infanta Cristina's husband will face a lesser fine, of just over half a
H
million, on top of the civil bail release he already had to deposit with the court and which forced the couple to sell
their mansion in Pedralbes, Barcelona province. Torres set up the Nóos Institute in Palma de Mallorca in 1999 and Urdangarín joined him in 2003 in running the non-profit group – which in fact had registered charity status – purportedly created to promote and organise arts, entertainment and sporting events. These included a
major cycle tournament in Valencia and, for their work in arranging these events, the Nóos bosses invoiced the regional governments of Madrid, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Their invoices were inflated and the difference pocketed by the two men. Numerous satellite companies with no business activities were created to launder the cash. One of these was Aizoon, owned 5050 by Urdangarín and the Infanta Cristina, which the former invoiced for his ‘management consultancy’ work to
Princess Crintina and her brother
account for the €6.1m in taxpayers' funds that he and Torres had kept for themselves.
Claimed ignorance The then Duke and Duchess of Palma – who have lost all their titles and Royal status – offset
personal, domestic expenses against Aizoon to benefit from income tax relief. Cristina claimed she was a mere sleeping partner in Aizoon and knew nothing about its finances or activities, but signed documents Urdangarín gave her because she ‘trusted her husband’. However, the judge considered it implausible that the key bank employee with 25 years' experience in a top financial management role should be ignorant of the affairs of a company she owned 50 per cent of, but any involvement she might have had in the money laundering scam cannot be proven, meaning criminal action has only been taken for the tax evasion aspect. Urdangarín and Torres were initially facing 19 years each in prison and multimillion fines, but the prosecutor, Pedro Horrach tried to do a deal with them which would reduce their sentences. The former Duke of Palma was only willing to agree a deal resulting in a maximum of two years in prison, since as a first offence, he would not have to serve it, but this was rejected by Horrach.

Bremain in Spain demands EU passports for Brits post-Brexit
E
xpat campaign group Bremain in Spain is battling for Brits living abroad to be given EU passports post-Brexit. The group has backed the ‘Choose Freedom’ campaign, which wants Brussels to protect expats’ rights once the UK exits the EU. Its European Citizens Initiative needs one million signatures from at least seven European countries for legislation to be put before the European parliament. Bremain in Spain spokesperson Sue Wilson said: “For those living in Europe, who have been denied the opportunity to vote because of the 15-year rule, this is fantastic news. “Whatever the result of the campaign, I hope – at the very least – that it will prove to all European

The group has up to a year to collect the votes, following which the European Commission will have three months to make a decision. Around 4,000 people have voted for the initiative already, although UK citizens in France, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Austria and Portugal are barred from taking part. BITE SIZE NEWS: Torrevieja’s snow white exhibition It was a historic day on the 18th January when it snowed for the first time in Torrevieja since 1926. Many people rushed outside with their cameras to capture the moment. Because of this, there will be a display of photos in the casino in Torrevieja that will be opened on March 23rd to coincide with World Meteorological Day. The exhibition will be opened by Jorge Olcina Cantos, a climatologist from the University of Alicante. There will also be the opportunity to attend a conference about extreme weather conditions and the changing climate of the Mediterranean. The exhibition and the day are being organised by Proyecto Mastral. If you took photos or videos of Torrevieja in the snow on 18th January then you can submit them to the website www.nieve.eltiempoentorrevieja.es or by email to nieve@eltiempoentorrevieja.es. If you do enter your photo you should include your name and who took the photo or video. The final date for submissions is Sunday 26th February.

Torrevieja’s human trafficking connection The National Police, in collaboration with security forces in Morocco, has managed to address what they consider to be the most active human trafficking network in the Strait of Gibraltar. They believe this particular gang has been operating since 2008 and is linked to the trafficking of Nigerian women for sexual exploitation. Seven people have been detained in Spain whilst the leaders of the gang have been apprehended in Morocco. The investigation began in August 2015 when the local police found a 16 year old girl of Nigerian origin in a children’s centre in Ceuta. The girl was evidently the victim of sexual exploitation and the police began their investigations into the origins of this crime. The investigation led to a criminal organisation of Nigerian origin which specialised in the sexual exploitation of Nigerian women and is strongly linked to Torrevieja. The detention of seven of those responsible in April 2016 led to another three Nigerians being investigated. These three are believed to be the ones supplying the women. Their identification led to requests for international arrests to be made of further gang members. Four of the seven who have been
arrested are now in prison without bail. They appear to be linked to two groups who have trafficked at least 39 women who have been sexually exploited. The women were kept in very poor circumstances with limited nutrition and access to basic supplies. One of the leaders is also linked to an organisation responsible for more than 40 boat trips from the north of Morocco to Spain over the last few years. Some of these did not reach their destination and have been shipwrecked with the resulting loss of lives. One particular leader of the gang is very well-known and influential in the Nigerian community in Morocco and was able to purchase the boats and materials needed to transport hundreds of people. The other two people detained in North Africa are implicated in the capture of the women using voodoo rituals and their reputation and influence amongst the sub-Saharan community. Whilst on route across the continent to the Moroccan coast women were hidden in vehicles and during their journey through Africa would be sexually assaulted and mistreated. Children accompanying them would often be sent out begging to increase the gang’s profits. Suzanne O’Connell

Pro refugee protest BITE SIZE In what is probably one of the biggest protests Barcelona has ever seen in recent history, more than 160,000 people gathered in Spain's second city calling for the government to ‘stop making excuses’ and take in refugees from the Syrian and Iraq wars. Every single political party in Catalunya’s regional government – except the right-wing PP, currently reigning in national Parliament – backed the mammoth protest, which took place on Saturday.
and Italy and on the shores of these countries rescuing desperate migrants risking their lives on the open water. Spain's government has promised to take a total of 18,000 refugees from Greek, Italian, Turkish, Jordanian and Lebanese camps before the end of 2017, but so far has taken in fewer than 2,000. This said, the Spanish government has shown itself to be among the most willing in the EU, with the low number being mainly due to red tape and multi-layered administrative procedures rather than

The Valencian Tourism Agency is promoting ornithological tourism in the region of Valencia considering it to have significant growth potential. Councillor Serrano explained that Torrevieja will be present at the International Fair of Ornithological Tourism which takes place from the 24th to 26th February. At this event people will be able to gain more information about the Lagunas of Torrevieja and La Mata and the rich plant and animal life that there is here.
Prizes for women
After marching the whole of the city centre, the demonstrators finished in the Plaza Urquinaona, which turned out to be way too small for everyone to fit into. They were joined by associations such as SOS Racism and Tanquem els CIE ('Let's shut the CIEs', or immigrant internment centres), Papeles para Todos ('Documents for everyone'), 'Stop Mare Mortum ('Stop the Sea of Death'), and charities such as Proactiva Open Arms, which works handson in the refugee camps in Greece, Turkey
reluctance. Spain is one of the EU's most passionately pro-refugee countries, despite over one in five of the working age being unemployed, whilst wealthier countries in Europe and worldwide continue to resist refugee resettlement out of unfounded terrorism-related fears. Politicians and union leaders in Barcelona and the wider region of Catalunya complained about the ‘serious injustice’ in European policies towards ‘people fleeing war and misery’.
Torrevieja’s record for robberies Torrevieja can once more go in the record books as having the highest number of property break-ins in the province of Alicante. Last year there were 978 breakins which accounts for 11.2% of the total in Alicante province. The total number for Alicante town, with triple the population, was only 839. Every day in Torrevieja there are, on average, three forced entries. However, there is some good news as the statistic for house burglaries only grew by 0.3% on previous years in comparison to an increase of 3.1% overall in the province. Not so good though when it comes to some other crimes. Robbery with violence increased by 12.9% with 184 cases; the number of thefts also increased by 8.8% and drug-related offences went up from 24 to 26. The statistics for Orihuela are also on the increase although the total number registered still tends to be less than in
Torrevieja. Last year the number of breakins in Orihuela was up by 12.4%, thefts with force and intimidation went up by 29.2% and drug trafficking was up by 20%. The only type of theft that does seem to be reducing is that of vehicle theft. Overall in the province the number of murders fell by half last year with 15 cases compared to 30 in 2015. Of these, four were in Torrevieja and two in Orihuela. Overall in the province drug trafficking is up with a total of 704 cases which represents an increase of 17.1%. The number of violent robberies has increased by 4% and break-ins are up by 3.7%. The number of minor offences has dropped by 1.4% and there have been fewer cases of damage with 9,933 cases in 2015 compared to 9,619 in 2016. Suzanne O’Connell
The mayor, José Manuel Dolón announced the ‘Woman of the year’ and ‘Business woman of the year’ awards. The prizes are awarded to recognise the very special contributions that women make to the town. Nominees are invited for ‘Mujer 2017’ and these should be women who have contributed to the life of the town and are recognised for their extraordinary character, personal determination and strength and their ability to overcome difficulties. Nominations for ‘Emprendedora 2017’ should be women who are recognised for their ability to overcome stereotypes and barriers and nominees should be leaders whose actions have had direct implications for others in the town, particularly the employment of women. Any suggestions should be given to the town hall for the attention of the department of welfare and equality at the email igualdad@torrevieja.eu and entries will be accept until Friday 24th February. More details can be found on the town council website. The awards will be presented on 8th March 2017.
Sign up for the water race This has to be one of the more unusual events to be launched in Torrevieja. This year there will be the first race of ‘floating artefacts’ to be held on July 16th. You can enter with any homemade construction that floats on the water. The competition has been announced by the Manager of the Real Club Nautico in Torrevieja and will be held at the Muelle Pesquero at 11am on July 16th. The early announcement of this event gives everyone time to start constructing their boats and floats now. There will be a number of different categories including for the most unusual float, for the best crew, for the youngest and the oldest participant. The route will be straightforward and will run parallel to the submarine in the port. To register for the event you should go to the Department of fiestas at the town hall between 9am and 2pm with the last date Continued on page 6

Highlight of the Carnival Sunday 19th and Saturday the 25th February will see the two main events associated with Carnival in Torrevieja. On Sunday 19th it was the daytime carnival with all the dance groups and comparsas gathered together as part of a flamboyant procession across the town. The processions start out from the Plaza María Asunción and travel along Calle Ramón Gallud to Calle Patricio Pérez. If you missed Sunday’s daytime procession, the same participants and route will be followed on the evening of Saturday 25th February starting late at 10pm. There has been some disagreement about the amount of money awarded in prizes to this event. It is claimed that there is still €11,760 of prize money owed to winners of the competitions during carnival 2016. It is claimed that only the drag queen prizes have currently been awarded from the previous year. However, for those watching the procession, any dispute over prize giving is quickly forgotten during one of Torrevieja’s most enjoyable annual events. Suzanne O’Connell
Planting programme continues The councillor for the environment, Fanny Serrano, and the councillor for parks and gardens, Domingo Soler, visited the park ‘Reina de la Sal’ on Friday 17th February in order to take the reintroduction of the endangered plant ´jarilla cabeza de gato’to its next stage.
Councillor Fanny Serrano and Councillor Domingo Soler planting the jarilla
The jarilla cabeza de gato is one of the species of plants being re-introduced into the area to help increase their presence in spots where they were once much more abundant. The plant is under threat of extinction in the Valencian community. Planting in this particular location is hoped to help the plant be more widely recognised and preserved. Giving its greater publicity it is hoped that everyone will take their part in looking after it. The need to raise awareness doesn’t just extend to this particular flower. Councillor Domingo Soler refers to the need to make everyone more aware of the town’s natural parks and areas that need preserving. During the months of February 2016 and November 2015 samples of the jarilla were introduced into different areas of the town including the Reina de la Sal, the natural parks and in the Cabo Cervera area. Areas where the planting has taken place have seen success with 40% of those planted taking root and flowering during February and March. Suzanne O’Connell
Spain’s murder count has fallen to under 300 in a year for the first time, according to figures released last week by the Spanish government. A total of 292 people were murdered in 2016, compared with 302 in 2015, representing a 3.3 per cent drop. The new figure confirms a downward trend observable for over a decade. In 2005, for instance, the homicide count was 518. “Despite this drop, behind every number there is a tragedy. That is why we must never be satisfied and why we must redouble our efforts,” said Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido at the presentation of the 2016 Criminality Balance Report. Spain ranks second in the European Union on the list of countries with the lowest homicide rates,” added Zoido. According to the data released last Tuesday, the 2016 rate was 0.63 homicides
per 100,000 inhabitants. Spain was only outdone by Austria, with a rate of 0.47, although Spain’s 2016 figures are compared with 2014 Eurostat data for other countries. Also, homicide attempts rose last year compared with 2015, “although this figure has shrunk over the last five years,” said the minister. The government’s report also highlights the 44 women whose murders are classified as domestic violence. This represents 15 percent of the total figure for 2016. A year earlier, 60 women had died at the hands of their partners or spouses. “It is satisfying to see a reduction in this gloomy figure, but it is also sad because of what lies behind the numbers,” said Zoido. So far this year, 10 women have been killed by their current or former partners.

Councillor resigns Following an urgent meeting with the local government in Torrevieja, councillor África Celdrán has decided to resign from the government team. The decision was taken as a result of proceedings being taken out against her in court. She has resigned in order for the local government not to be involved in any political backlash that might result.
Councillor Celdrán (above) is currently responsible for welfare, equality and senior citizens in Torrevieja. She says: ‘With my resignation I intend to avoid the Municipal Government being affected by political manipulation from those that have been behind this all along. I repeat what I have already said on other occasions and that whatever I did was only intended to benefit the interests of the citizens of Torrevieja and was not for personal benefit.’ The charges related to a contract awarded for the May fair programme and La Plurisima which was awarded to MIC. Prosecutors have asked for the councillor to be suspended from public duty for eleven years. The mayor and other council members maintain their support for Councillor Celdrán whilst reluctantly accepting her resignation. Suzanne O’Connell
San Miguel people call for replacement social worker The neighbourhood association “San Miguel Arcángel” has taken the local government team to task over the lack of a social worker for the borough. The association believes that not having a dedicated Social Worker affects the service provided to the local community and is detrimental to the well-being and social welfare of the people. It is demanding the position be filled immediately. The previous social worker was dismissed more than three-months-ago and since then there has been no welfare services provision. This is despite the fact that the association claims these services were used on a regular basis and are sorely missed. The situation was brought to the attention of San Miguel Arcangel by several members of the local community who have been directly affected by the lack of social services, leving the association no option but to approach the Councillor for Social Services to “denounce the fact and demand the immediate restoration of this service”. The association says that the lack of foresight is ‘unheard of’ and ‘incredible’, firstly to make the dismissal without a replacement in mind and then to take such a long time to remedy the situation. Especially in a service that is of vital importance for the quality of life to local people, particularly the elderly and their families.

Cold spell returns Most of Spain began to suffer yet another significant drop in temperature from Sunday with heavy rain forecast on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol. The northern mainland and Canary Islands are also due to suffer. Tidal surge warnings have been issued for the coast of Andalucía as a whole, parts for the Valencian coast, and thermometers
will plunge in the southern and eastern halves of the country, according to the State meteorological agency, AEMET. Light frosts in mountainous areas, especially in the north, are expected for the early hours of the morning at the start of the week, with snow at altitudes of 1,100 and above. Sharp cloudbursts are forecast in the south-east and south, and very strong north and north-east winds are likely to sweep across the east coast, the Strait of Gibraltar, Galicia, the Canary Islands and the Alborán Sea off the shores of Almería and Granada.

NEW BEGINNINGS IN SPAIN – EIGHT PEOPLE TELL THEIR STORY Leaving your home country to live abroad is no easy matter. However, many people reading this will have done just that. How was it for you? First having the idea, then talking about it with family and friends, finding your property and finally upping sticks and settling in your new home. Get together with a few expats and they each have their own story to tell and special experiences, some good and some not. ‘New beginnings in Spain’ retells the stories of four couples who moved from the UK to live in Torrevieja or Orihuela Costa. The couples were interviewed and their accounts faithfully recorded and made into the book for others to read. Many people will recognise the sentiments. For Nuala it was starting out in a new relationship, new home and in a new country: ‘I suppose for us it was more of an adventure,’ Nuala explains. ‘We were moving here together. Starting our lives together. When Tony moved to Northern Ireland he moved into my house. It was all new, a new chapter for us. Throughout the preparations I never at one point said, ‘are we doing the right thing?’ Whereas for Kath and Derek it was an escape from their stressful jobs as a nurse in A and E and a prison officer: ‘’A and E was liking a boxing ring on a Saturday night for the nurses. So we looked at the finances and we thought we’d take early retirement. Doing that was
going to be difficult for us in the UK, so we looked at doing it in Spain instead.’ Barbara and Anona took the decision together having recently lost their husbands:
‘Everyone was saying, ‘if you can do it, why not? They said we’d never come back but I did point out that you should never say never.’ Not everything went to plan. From Nuala and Tony who arrived in Spain to be greeted by snow and Kath and Derek who found it took a little while to settle in to a new life of being together: ‘We only had one bedroom. My dogs got more exercise than they’ve ever had. I used to get out, take the dogs out, sit on a bench somewhere. And they’d sit there looking at me like what are we doing out here again?’
‘We thought, we get on well together, let’s see if we can find something we can share and that’s what we did.’ Whilst Terry and Enza took the plunge a little sooner than everyone thought:
There are plenty of books to read about how to move to Spain but they don’t cover the emotional aspects of what it really feels like to pack your bags and do it. The advice the couples give comes from the heart. As Kath points out, when all the moving is over ‘You can’t expect to come out here and be on holiday. You’ve still got to have a life like you would in England.’ And Derek adds: ‘You might have the sun here but you’ve still got to do your washing.’ I wrote the book to record the actual experiences of some people who’ve taken this step to help those who might be thinking of doing the same. Since the interviews were completed Brexit does raise new issues but what the couples had to say is just as valid. Any of us who have taken that step will empathise with the struggles with paper work, the health care concerns and the ups and downs of making a new
life. It always feels good to know that you’re not on your own, particularly in these uncertain times. If you would like to download your own copy of the book you can from http://bit.ly/2kEO84W . Suzanne O’Connell

Work starts on Avenida Villamartin Local residents are rejoicing as work finally starts on Avenida Villamartin, the road that runs from Dial Prix in Los Dolses to the toll roundabout near Zenia Boulevard. The tree roots growing under the tarmac on the is road have caused misery for local drivers for many years, and resulted in many a near miss as people swerve to avoid them. The coordinator for Services in Orihuela Costa, Luisa Boné, has been to check the work in progress and reported that the initial phase is well underway. Over the last week the municipal team has focused mainly on the pruning or removal of trees along the road as many had low braches that were a hindrance to drivers and visibility. The Councillor Bone said: “This work is vital in this area and we are responding to
the requests and demands of the local community. This first clearing phase will be complemented by other improvements, such as repairing the road surface and making the road safe for users.” The Councillor Bone explained that the avenue has numerous specimens of pine trees that require pruning, as well as patching work to the road itself as a
temporary measure until the resurfacing works are carried out in order to minimise vehicle damage as they passes through this route. The initial phases will end this week and after their completion the road will open again to traffic, which has been diverted by the Local Police whilst the work was underway. Mireille Toddington
Cuts to Orihuela medical centre budgets The Councillor for Health, Noelia Grao, has slammed new cuts made by the Regional Health Authority to the budgets allocated to the various medical centres across the municipality of Orihuela. A new draft agreement received last week by the Department refers specifically to the medical offices across the municipality, specifically those in the districts, and which shows a cut of almost 31,000 euros compared to the previous agreement which ended on 31st December 2016. Until that date, the City Council and the Conselleria maintained an agreement for a contribution by the regional administration of 119,101 euros for the services and maintenance of the 18 doctors’ offices located across Orihuela. The Councillor said: “In view of the need
to renew the new agreement, we contacted the Ministry to transfer the expenses which the City has accrued and these are considerably higher than those now
An unhappy Noelia Grao
allocated in the new document as the expenses during the year 2016 exceeded 300,000 euros. “The new document proposes an itemisation of 88,123 euros,
compared to the 119,101 euros allocated in the previous agreement.” Faced with this situation, the Department of Health, along with municipal technicians, will evaluate the options to rerequest a‘fair contribution’from the Ministry of Health. The Councillor added that the information presented in this draft agreement is a decision that‘harms Orihuela and its residents’ and that the medical centres across the municipality, which serve 20,000 people, are ‘equally important and necessary than those of any other municipality in the Valencian Community and the Vega Baja’ so the allocated budget for the next four years ‘should be adjusted more to the current situation, and certainly not to reduce the amount’. WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Less than a fifth of a cent separated the euro from the week's joint losers, the US dollar and the pound. The single currency fell by an average of -0.5% against the other dozen most activelytraded currencies. There were two angles to the euro's problems. One was the Euroland economic data, which were more inclined to disappoint than to impress. Notably, fourth quarter growth for both the euro zone and Germany came in below forecast at a provisional 0.4%, lagging the United States' 0.5% and Britain's 0.6%. The other irritant was politics, with rightwing anti-EU candidates continuing to lead the polls in France and the Netherlands. The dollar's problems related principally to Donald Trump's
anarchic cabinet and to his "I'm not ranting and raving" press conference on Thursday. Sterling's were down to the UK ecostats: inflation was lower than expected at 1.8% and wage growth slowed from 2.8% to 2.6%. Ecostats from the States were mostly in line with or better than expectations and the Federal Reserve chairperson told Congress that interest rates would rise further this year. Such a combination would normally have taken the dollar ahead but investors refused to follow the script. Their misgivings appeared to relate to the disarray in which the new administration has found itself and to Donald Trump's "I'm not ranting and raving" press conference.
British pensioner kills wife in nursing home A British man has killed his wife by slitting her throat in a pensioner’s residence in El Campello. The 86 year old Briton was arrested after attempting to commit suicide with the same knife which had ended the life of his wife in their room in the Muchavista residential home. His wife, 79 year old Margaret, tragically became the first fatality from domestic violence so far this year in the Valencia Community. The incident happened on Sunday morning between 8.30am and 9am in the room shared by the married couple in the pensioner’s residence and day care centre Orpea, situated on the Muchavista beach in El Campello. This is a privileged location where Margaret had chosen to spend her later years, which her husband decided to end yesterday armed with a knife and despite his lack of mobility he slit her throat, but failed to commit suicide. It is not known whether the tragedy was a suicide pact. A Local Police patrol from El Campello arrived quickly at the scene, followed by the Guardia Civil, whose barracks are just 300m away, along with an emergency medical unit from Samu. The medics could do nothing for the victim as the cut was fatal. Guardia Civil officers arrested the husband, who was attended at the scene for his self-inflicted injuries. Initially the cut on his wrists seemed superficial and was bandaged. However, by noon he was taken to the San Joan Hospital where he underwent an emergency operation and is now reported to be out of danger and conscious, and is waiting to be placed before judicial disposition. The attacker has mobility difficulties and used a wheelchair to get to the ambulance and required four people to lift him onto the trolley and into the vehicle and it was clear he was in a state of shock.
The Guardia Civil Criminality Service examined the crime scene and collected evidence for investigation in a presumed case of domestic violence. El Campello Town Hall, said there had been no previous record of domestic violence or ill treatment
between the couple. Margaret becomes the 11th victim to die at the hands of her partner as a result of domestic violence in 2017. Meanwhile, at around the same time on Sunday on the other side of the country, a man aged 91 years old was arrested for stabbing his wife, of the same age, in the neck in Villanueva del Fresno in Badajoz, Extremadura. The victim was operated on at the Perpetuo Socorro Hospital in Badajoz and is in intensive care, whilst her husband, who allegedly tried to take an overdose of pharmaceutical drugs, has been taken into the psychiatric ward.

Arrests for forced begging in Orihuela Officers from the National Police have detained five Bulgarians who took advantage of the precarious economic situation of fellow countrymen to trick them into coming to Spain. nce here they would take-away their documents and then force them to beg on the streets. During the police operation a house search was carried out in which the arrested were made. Another adult was released and two minors, who are the children of those arrested, have been left under the protection of social services and the Centre of Minors. The operation is the result of an on-going police investigation. At the end of last year, agents from the Unit against Illegal Immigration and Documentary Falsehood Networks (UCRIF) of the Higher Police Headquarters of Murcia began investigating a group of people, all belonging to a family clan of Bulgarian nationals who they believed were engaged in the exploitation of people who they forced to beg on the streets for money. This family group lived in an abandoned house in a neighbourhood of Orihuela from where they travelled to Bulgaria in order to capture their victims. These were compatriots, children and adults, in difficult economic situations who were looking for a better life.Once in Murcia they were picked up by another member of the clan who moved them to Orihuela. The exploiters removed personal documents of their victims, which included adults and children aged between 12 to 16 years of age, and forced them to beg in the streets, then took all the money earned. If they tried to leave, the victims were physically assaulted.
After numerous investigations to identify those involved in this exploitation, officers of the National Police requested an order of entry for the Orihuela address. The police raid resulted in the arrest of five people - three men and two women - all of Bulgarian nationality aged between 40 and 55 years of age. They allowed the release of an adult Bulgarian citizen who had agreed to move to Spain under false
O
pretences, in the company of five other people, three of them minors. Also released were two children, the children of those arrested who were also being forced to beg. Also found was numerous documents, possibly of other people who have been forced to beg, which is still investigating. Also found was tools associated with burglary and items that showed evidence of having been stolen. Currently, the two minors are under custody and protection in a juvenile center and the adult is under the assistance of appropriate social services. The investigation and subsequent raid has been developed by the UCRIF of the Higher Police Headquarters of Murcia and the UCRIF of the Alicante Provincial Commission.

Lagerstroemia indica, commonly known as Crape myrtle or Crepe myrtle, is an outstanding ornamental that rewards with a long blooming season of showy flowers and a winter season of dramatic architectural beauty highlighted by distinctive exfoliating bark. It is a small tree/large shrub perfect for suburban gardens and a tree for all seasons: In summer it produces vibrant flowers, which have a texture like crepe fabric, and in autumn it provides great leaf colour in shades of yellow, orange and scarlet. These trees also get better with age, as the trunk develops a wonderful gnarled appearance (a bit like olive trees), and the bark sheds throughout the year to give a gorgeous mottled look with patches of pink, grey and brown.
DESCRIPTION Originally from Asia, Crape Myrtle was first introduced to England and the United States in the eighteenth century and is now widely cultivated throughout warmer climates around the world. In Europe Crape myrtle is common in the south of France, the Iberian Peninsula and all of Italy.
CULTURE Crape myrtles thrive in warm, dry climates with long summers and tolerate cold winters while they are dormant. It prefers a well-drained ground that remains moist in the growing season, but it is a fairly versatile tree, adapting to coastal situations and dry conditions once established. This colourful addition to a summer garden prefers acid soil so be sure to add organic mulch before you plant it. This also improves drainage.
Crape myrtle blooms on the current season’s growth so pruning is not strictly necessary except to remove overly dense branches and crossing limbs. No pruning will result in a mass display of smaller flowers, while cutting back the main branches in winter will encourage larger flowering heads. And cutting off old flower heads in summer (before they go to seed) can promote a second and third round of flowering. Crapes tend to produce many suckers that should be removed as they appear if you want to maintain them as trees with distinct trunks. They are also enthusiastic re-seeders so you may find yourself pulling up baby Crapes throughout the summer.
PROPAGATION By seed or by cuttings from medium wood in autumn or hard wood in winter. Easy to root.
USAGE Long used in "cityscaping" Crape myrtles have become increasingly popular as garden specimens, especially as new varieties have been developed for smaller size and disease resistance. Several hundred years of cultivation has resulted in a huge number of cultivars of widely varying characteristics. Today it is possible to find Crape myrtles to fill every landscape

need, from large ornamentals to tidy street trees to dense barrier hedges all the way down to fast-growing dwarf types of 2-4 feet (60-120 cm) which can go from seed to bloom in a season. The colourful dwarf "myrtlettes" are bushy plants and are quickly gaining popularity as a great way to add nonstop colour to small spaces and container gardens. Myrtlettes are an especially good choice for hot sunny balconies. Purchase
plants or grow from seed (if started indoors in late winter they will be blooming by midsummer - allowing gardeners in places where the plant is not winter hardy to still enjoy the intense colours of the frilly flowers). The 'Petit' group of cultivars is also available in a number of colours, but grows slightly larger to 8 feet (2.4 m) in height. Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO KUALA LUMPUR with Vivalia Travel Kuala Lumpur is a sprawling city and its residential suburbs seem to go on forever
Kuala Lumpur is a sprawling city and its residential suburbs seem to go on forever. The city proper, is a Federal Territory has an area of 243 km2 which consists of the city center and its surrounding urban areas, managed by the KL City Hall. The city can be divided into
the following areas, each of which offers a particular attraction or activity: Old City Centre/Old Town: This is the traditional core of Kuala Lumpur where you’ll find the former colonial administrative centre, with the Merdeka Square, Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Selangor Club. This district also includes Kuala Lumpur’s old Chinese commercial centre which everyone refers to now as Chinatown. Golden Triangle: This is where you will find many of the city’s shopping malls, five-star hotels and the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. Brickfields: This area, located south of the city centre, is Kuala Lumpur’s Little India filled with saree shops and banana leaf rice restaurants. THINGS TO SEE AND DO Kuala Lumpur is short on must-see attractions: beyond the Petronas Twin Towers, the real joy lies in wandering
randomly, seeing, shopping and eating your way through it. While some buildings in the high-rise Golden Triangle, such as the KL Tower, are uninspired copies of other famous structures, the Petronas Twin Towers are truly marvelous. Other interesting things to see: Masjid Jamek, a charming Moorish-style mosque set at a confluence on the Klang River or The National Monument in the pretty Lake Gardens, inspired by the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Other activities include usual urban sports such
as golfing, cycling, running, jogging and horse riding. If you’re into rock climbing, the Batu Caves in the Northern suburbs is popular. Several good theatres and performance halls have emerged as part of Malaysia's drive to encourage greater cultural expression. Pampering and spas can be
found in several five-star hotels and independent centres in the Golden Triangle. Shopping in Kuala Lumpur is one of travel's greatest pleasures. Kuala Lumpur alone has 66 shopping malls and it is the retail and fashion hub for Malaysia. EAT AND DRINK Delicious food can be very cheap too: just head to the ubiquitous roadside stalls or kedai kopi (literally coffee shop,
but these are all about the food). These shops operate like a food court with many stalls selling a variety of food. Some coffee shops have tables and chairs by the roadside. Chinatown in the city centre and Jalan Alor in the Golden Triangle have some of the greatest concentrations of coffeeshops and stalls. They mostly open only at night. Also, Kuala Lumpur has quite a vibrant night-life and the Golden Triangle is the epicentre of most of the partying which goes on in the city.

PROPERTY BLOG
Are you living comfortably? A nyone that reads my blog every week, knows how I’m always saying about de-cluttering the home, before you list your property for sale. But there are occasions when people can take this to the extreme, and remove every last piece of “life” inside the property. Just because your house is on the market for sale, doesn’t mean to say you can’t still live comfortably. I once saw a home that the owner had cleared away every sign of existence, and to say the lounge furniture looked like they were sitting on tea chests, is mild compared to how it really looked. It gave the impression of living in a warehouse, not a home. So, imagine what a buyer would think. You need to make sure the property remains homely. It’s ok to think that the buyer will want to put their own stamp on it later, but you’ve got to tempt them first, and presentation will do it. Buyers are willing to pay more if they feel emotionally connected to a house – on average staged homes sell for a 5-10% higher price. It’s always harder to sell a home that is empty, but I do understand that sometimes this just can’t be helped. So under these circumstances, you need to make sure that everything is up to scratch, like freshly painted walls and cleaned thoroughly. Buyers won’t have any furnishings to fix their eyes on, so they will automatically be looking for any defects in the home. Make sure the house is bright and if you’re leaving curtains, they must be clean. If at all possible, ask a few friends if they have any extra pieces of furniture, that you could borrow, just to help stage the home. Pictures, flowers in vases on tables, a clean rug on the floor, always makes a warm welcome. It’s not just about the inside of the home, you need to focus your attention on the outside too. Make sure the pathways are cleaned, maybe they need pressure washing. Sweep away any fallen leaves, and trim back any overgrown plants.

Buyers – if you’re looking at empty houses, you need to bring your imagination with you on the viewing appointment, as this could be your future home you’ll be looking at. It can be difficult to imagine where furniture could be placed, and if you can even fit all of your favourite furnishings in the room. All valid questions, but with a little planning, you can easily work everything out. Did you know that Ikea have a “design your room” programme online, that lets you place your furniture within a “virtual room?” All you need are the room sizes! So just be open minded when viewing an empty property, it may not just be a contender, it could be YOUR next home! Who Packs Your Parachute? In America, the home of many great things (and maybe some not so great right now!) and the leaders in the industry of inspirational seminars and motivating speaking, one of the most interesting guys on the circuit is a man with the unlikely name of ‘Plumb’ – Charlie Plumb; or to give him his full title; Captain J Charles Plumb. Captain Plumb is a decorated Vietnam Veteran. After graduating from Annapolis Naval Academy he became a U.S navy jet pilot. Handsome, confident and daring it wasn’t long before the young fighter pilot started making a name for himself over the Vietnamese jungles. He engaged in 74 successful combat missions, all the time reveling in his tally – keeping an account of his ‘scores’. Then, on his 75th engagement and only five days before he was to have returned home, Captain J Charles Plumb was shot down over Viet Cong territory. With great difficulty and with only with a second to spare, on account of flying so low, Plumb managed to eject from his plane. As the plane crashed into the jungle, he was parachuting into enemy hands. Captain Plumb would now spend the next six years in a Vietnamese prison camp. Tortured, abused and with the constant threat of death
hanging over him, it is little wonder that this period had a life-changing effect on the young fighter pilot. Soon his arrogance was replaced by humility, but in captivity, Charlie Plumb distinguished himself even more so than he had done on combat. His fellow prisoners relied on him for all sorts of reasons. He became a genius in the art of underground communications. Whatever the problem, in this stinking hell-hole, the men looked to Captain Plumb to pull them through from day to day. Through time he acquired a spiritual awakening and he acted as chaplain for two of the six years he was imprisoned. At the end of his military career – just wait till you see this list; he was awarded two Purple Hearts, The Legion of Merit, The Silver Star, The Bronze Star, The P.O.W medal and many civilian honours. What an array of decorations by any standards! Upon his return to civilian life, it will not surprise you to learn that the now simply Charlie Plumb applied himself to business ventures and carved out a very successful career for himself. Several years later, he was sitting with his wife in a Kansas City restaurant, when what looked like a total stranger, walked over to his table. The man
pointed his finger at him and said; “You are Captain Plumb.” Charlie wondered if he should know this man, as he replied; “Yes Sir, I’m Captain Plumb.” The man continued; “You flew jet-fighters in Vietnam: You were one of the best: You were on the aircraftcarrier Kitty Hawk: You were shot down; you parachuted into enemy territory and you spent the next six years as a prisoner of war”The next question, or more especially its answer is a solitary reminder of how interdependent we all are on each other. “You are correct, but how in the world do you know all that?” “Because, Sir, I packed your parachute!” The men embraced as this emotional meeting proved too much for Mrs Plumb, who could be heard sobbing throughout the restaurant. “I guess the chute worked OK?”“Indeed it did and I must tell you that I have said a lot of prayers of thanks for your nimble fingers and for the care you took, but I never thought I’d have the opportunity to thank you in person.” Charlie Plumb never slept that night. He kept thinking about that man and what he might have looked like in his sailor’s uniform. A mighty jet fight pilot would scarcely bestow a glance on a lowly sailor. He wondered how many times he might have passed him without as much as a “Good Morning” or even a nod. How many times had they been within touching distance without a hand-shake? Had he ever spoken to this man on The Kitty Hawk? He wondered how many hours did that sailor spend at the long wooden table, in the bowels of the ship,
with his tired fingers weaving and folding the silks of those parachutes, until the day came along and he packed one for Captain J Charles Plumb. Since that chance meeting, Charlie Plumb has told his story a great many times. Once again it made a change in his life and especially with regard to how he looked at those around him. He asks the question; “How’s your parachute pack coming along and who are the special people in your life who provide the encouragement you need to bail you out when the chips are down.” So, who is packing you parachute today? We all have people who provide what we need to make it through the day. Let us at least give back a “hello” a “please” or “thank you”. Don’t forget to wish them a speedy recovery when ill and a congratulations when they achieve any little bit of note. Pay a compliment and just do or say something nice for no reason. As you go through this day, this week, this month, this year, look around and recognize the people who pack your parachute. Perhaps it’s time right this minute to give someone a call and thank them for packing your chute!!
The open hand holds more friends than the closed fist.

Eastenders Denise is forced to deal with the consequences of her actions. Dot takes matters into her own hands.
Emmerdale Aaron’s day for sentencing arrives. Ross is shocked by Debbie’s request. Liv feels rejected. Debbie considers risking it. Gabby and Liv are up to no good. Aaron struggles with the situation.
Documentary uncovering the discrimination and persecution of people with albinism in Tanzania and Malawi in East Africa. NHS doctor Oscar Duke, who himself has albinism, embarks on a personal journey to discover what life is like for people who share his condition in these countries. In Tanzania, home to among the highest proportion of people living with albinism in the world, people with albinism are vulnerable not only to bigotry, but also mutilation and murder. Oscar himself struggled with the visual impairment albinism causes but feels he has never really suffered from serious discrimination. In contrast, the stigma that surrounds people with albinism has been greatly ingrained within some African societies for many generations. In the last ten years alone, there have been a staggering 170 attacks in Tanzania, 70 of which were fatal. This film explores why these terrible crimes are taking place and Oscar challenges the people responsible.

Relationships cause weight gain, say experts Experts warn that stable, loving relationship can cause us to gain an average of 4.5 kilos of weight Performing physical activity together, drinking in moderation and avoiding fast food are keys to avoiding weight gain for couples. According to the survey carried out by the Spanish Society of the Study of Obesity, the Spanish gained an average of 4.5kg when they have a partner. Findings show there are changes in eating habits as we spend more time with family and partners instead of practicing physical exercise, according to experts from the hospitals Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Valencia. As Dr. Caridad Gimeno, nutrition specialist at the Quirónsalud Hospital Obesity Unit points out, “when we have a partner, especially in the beginning, it is more common to eat out and go out for a
drink, which means we move away from the healthiest foods. This is why people with tendency to gain weight could notice a slight increase of weight”. “In addition”, adds Dr. Gimeno, “in the hospital obesity unit consultations we see that patients who are in content and loving relationshipsare the ones that tend to gain weight. In fact, a large percentage of this finding is based on the weight they were at the time of the wedding or formation of the stable relationship.” Another cause of possible weight gain is that some women, especially from the age of 30-35, relax in the physical aspect when they begin a family and upon the arrival of children in addition to the pregnancy, lack of time for exercise, cooking, etc. In the case for men, a similar situation occurs because when they take on more domestic and family duties they have less
free time and they often do not find time to practice the sports they did when they were single and end up also putting on a few extra pounds. The specialist recommends increasing physical activity by walking outdoors, going out to play with the children, cycling or taking dance classes, which in addition to staying active will help reinforce the bonds of the couple. Another option would be to sign up together for a cooking course, “where in addition to learning to cook, learn to eat healthier”, he says. Whether we eat at home or decide to eat out the nutritionist recommends choosing healthy alcoholic beverages such as wine, cava or beer and to consume them in a moderate amounts, forget about fast food and look for restaurants that offer us healthier options.

“The most important thing is not to look for excuses to eat unhealthily, drink in moderation and increase physical activity. This will keep you more at ease with yourself and make your partner happier”, he concludes. Emotional stress and consequences in cardiovascular health At the initial phase of falling in love, hormones, stress or emotion can lead to some loss of appetite and thus contribute to lower weight. In fact, with each emotion a bodily response is produced, they are not mere mental concepts, but we feel them in our body. According to Dr. Juan Luján, specialist in the cardiology unit of Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “depending on our condition, if we look, we can feel if our muscles are rigid, if our breathing is faster, if the heart beat is

stronger, if we are sweating, or on the contrary, if we feel more relaxed and calm.” In contrast, “negative emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety, all have well-known negative cardiovascular effects and are associated with problems such as hypertension, arrhythmias or myocardial infarction,” notes Dr. Luján. About Quirónsalud Quirónsalud is the largest hospital group in Spain and the third largest in Europe. It is present in 13 autonomous communities has the most advanced technology and has more than 6,200 beds in the 80 centres, like the Jimenez Diaz Foundation, Ruber, Hospital La Luz, University Hospital Quirónsalud Madrid, Teknon, Dexeus, Polyclinic Gipuzkoa, etc., as well as a large team of highly specialized professionals and international prestige.

Chemical plant inferno More than 3,000 workers from 150 companies were evacuated and schools shut down following a dramatic chemical plant explosion in Paterna, near Valencia last week. The blaze happened early last Wednesday morning at the Indukern factory on the Fuente del Jarro industrial estate whilst an employee was working with acetone, the main ingredient in nailpolish remover and extremely flammable. As well as all the companies on the industrial park, six other warehouses belonging to TMD Friction, Picken Gourmet, Productos Caselli and others have been evacuated. The worker in question, aged 27, was rushed to Valencia’s La Fe hospital with second-degree burns, but has since been discharged. Another two people aged 27 and 28 were taken to La Fe to be treated for smoke inhalation, but are also now out of hospital. They had been inside their car opposite the public swimming pool in neighbouring Burjassot when they called for help as they were ‘not feeling very well’. Luckily, all other employees on the Indukern premises at the time of the blast were safe and well. Despite flames of 40 to 50 metres high fanned by high winds, an acetone fire does not produce toxic smoke, so chemical poisoning is not an issue, but the huge quantity of smoke in general means a major
health risk for the population. Fire fighters managed to contain the fire by around 11.40am, but were still fighting to bring it under control and put it out hours later. Head of the fire brigade, José Miguel Basset said the magnitude of the inferno was so great that he had ‘rarely seen anything like it’. Numerous explosions were heard inside the warehouse, and fire fighters had a lucky escape when one of the chemical tanks was sent flying from the building and smashed into a fire engine, but did not ignite. Paterna residents were urged to stay indoors with their windows and doors shut, and a tunnel leading to the industrial estate had to be closed. The metro service between Paterna and Canyada was also suspended as a precaution, and all schools in the Canyada area as well as Paterna's Jaume I, Sanchís Guarner, Peset Alexandre, El Molí and Henri Matisse schools were all closed. Even the drainage network was blocked to prevent residue from the fire getting into the sewage plant, where water is treated and ‘recycled’. Electricity was switched off to prevent the grid becoming damaged by flames, and mains gas was stopped immediately due to the risk of another explosion.

5 ways to make your home cosier
Feeling the cold? Would you love to make your house warm and cosy in a way that will also have benefits in the summer? Covering those cold ceramic tiles or marble floor is one of the best ways to make your heating more effective and efficient. There’s 5 ways to achieve this. Rugs – Most of us will already have rugs in our lounges as a finishing touch but a rug can be so much more. If you can feel cold air under your sofa, then it makes sense to have a bigger rug that can go underneath and stop that draft. This also applies equally for bedrooms too. Carpets –You probably thought you would never want fitted carpet in Spain but after a winter or two, you realise how colds the nights are. Add top quality underlay to good quality carpet and you’ve got a room that is warm and cosy and provides support for your joints all year round. Carpet also traps dust and pet hair which can then be hoovered away, quickly and easily and is therefore highly recommended for allergy sufferers. Edged/Bound Carpet – If you want good quality floor covering, but don’t want it to be fully fitted, edged carpet could be the answer for you. You can
order carpet to fit any room, the edges are bound in a matching colour and you have a large area rug. You can turn it for equal wear or, take it up in the summer or take it with you if you move. For both the fitted and edged options, choose the ´stainfree for life´ option that is available to order in multiple widths so reducing any wastage. Carpet Tiles – Do you need a more practical and cheaper alternative to carpet to cover your floor. Consider carpet tiles as these can look amazing and will cover and cushion your floor, making them perfect for households with children, or if you dislike the tiles or marble floor. This is also an option if the floor is damaged or discoloured. Cushioned Vinyl – Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms or offices, cushioned vinyl is as it sounds - cushioned, comfortable, practical and easy to clean. Available in a wide range of designs and qualities to provide extra comfort, Vinyl is also perfect for covering ugly, cracked or broken tiles. For more advice and information on all aspects of flooring and free quotations, contact Carpet Heaven in Los Montesinos on 966 720 782 or visit their shop on the high street, Avenida del Mar 33B, to look at all their samples and collections.

Spanish lorry driver caught trafficking terrified migrants in fridge A lorry driver from Spain has been arrested in The Netherlands on suspicion of human trafficking after nine Asian migrants were found in a refrigeration unit in his container. Three Vietnamese men, three women of the same nationality and three Iraqi men were all hidden in the fridge. Scared for their lives, one of them called the police and said they were frightened of dying from hypothermia. Dutch police said the nine Asians were ‘absolutely frozen’ when they reached them. The spokesman for the national force in The Netherlands, Eric Passchier, said the driver ‘was aware of their presence’ and it is believed the migrants had paid him ‘huge sums of money’ to make the journey. The driver, a Spanish national in a Spanish-registered lorry, is said to have travelled up from
Belgium, but it is not known where he had originally collected the Iraqis and Vietnamese from. Although it is believed their final destination may have been the UK, but the lorry had not been authorised to pass through customs at the British border, Passchier says. A few months ago, a man from the Basque Country and a woman from Navarra were caught trying to drive home from Greece via Italy with Syrian and Iraqi migrants from refugee camps in their vehicle, intending to transport them to safety in Spain. Both the accused parties insisted their actions had been through compassion after seeing the desperate situation of the refugees in the Greek camps, and that they ‘would do it all again’ despite having been caught. The Basque regional government said it fully understood the aid
workers’ intentions and feelings, but did not agree with their method. In the case of the Spanish haulage worker in The Netherlands, however, he is believed to have been transporting the migrants purely for a hefty profit, not to rescue them from intolerable living conditions.
Pensioner who kept lost cash arrested A 69-year-old woman who found 900 euros in cash on the floor of a cash-point booth and kept it, has been arrested and charged with theft in Cantabria. The pensioner, who has never committed any previous offence, discovered the money in a bank branch in the Marqués de la Hermida district of the city of Santander. A man had lost it shortly beforehand, having
withdrawn it, placed it in a plastic bag and then dropped it without realising. The man was inside the bank at the counter when he realised he had dropped the cash, but it was not there when he went back. CCTV footage showed a woman, identified only by her initials of A.S.M.A., leaving the premises with it. She later told the police that she
had picked it up intending to give it back to the man who dropped it, or hand it in. The woman has been released, but with charges, after giving a full statement to the police.

Bremain in Spain demands EU passports for Brits post-Brexit Expat campaign group Bremain in Spain is battling for Brits living abroad to be given EU passports post-Brexit. The group has backed the ‘Choose Freedom’ campaign, which wants Brussels to protect expats’ rights once the UK exits the EU. Its European Citizens Initiative needs one million signatures from at least seven European countries for legislation to be put before the European parliament. Bremain in Spain spokesperson Sue
Wilson said: “For those living in Europe, who have been denied the opportunity to vote because of the 15-year rule, this is fantastic news. “Whatever the result of the campaign, I hope – at the very least – that it will prove to all European governments how strongly we value our EU citizenship.” If one million votes are collected, a delegation from the group will put their case to the European Parliament. The group has up to a year to collect the
votes, following which the European Commission will have three months to make a decision. Around 4,000 people have voted for the initiative already, although UK citizens in France, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Austria and Portugal are barred from taking part. The bid has been launched by Gly Hughes, a 57-year-old designer from Derbyshire. To vote, vist: www.bremaininspain.com/events/choos e-freedom/.
BA stops flights from London City to Madrid British Airways is ceasing flights between Madrid and London City airport as UK Parliament votes to start Brexit talks. The national air carrier was the only carrier which currently offers this route and customers with bookings from Madrid to the central London airport have been advised they will be taken to Heathrow or Gatwick instead. The decision of the airline, which is owned by IAG along with Spanish national carrier Iberia, has stunned Spaniards working in the City of London, as well as British employees who need to travel regularly to the Spanish capital on business. BA axing its CTY-MAD route comes just as the UK Parliament voted overwhelmingly for its government to begin Brexit negotiations with the remaining EU-27, and just as Madrid's regional president Cristina Cifuentes has launched a campaign for the Spanish
capital to become the new ‘City of London’ after Britain leaves the European Union. According to BA's website, City employees can only take direct flights to five Spanish airports – Granada, Málaga and the three Balearic Island terminals. London City airport remains, however, connected directly with other major European capitals and large metropolitan areas including Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Venice, Nice and even the Greek island of Mykonos. British Airways has announced its summer flight programme, starting in May which includes direct routes from Manchester to the Spanish cities of Alicante, Málaga, Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca, as well as to the island of Mykonos and the southern French city of Nice. It will also start to run flights from London Stansted, a terminal which forms
part of the Manchester Airport Group, to Florence, Geneva, Nice, and the Greek island of Skiathos, as well as increasing its existing routes to Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca. BA flights from Stansted to Málaga and the southern Portuguese city of Faro will start up again from May. Direct flights from Birmingham and Bristol to Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca and Málaga, in Spain and Florence in eastern Italy will also start in May.

Guardamar boosts interest at Brussels Tourism Fair Guardamar has, for the fifth consecutive year, attended the "Salon des Vacances", the most important tourism fair in the Benelux region, which took place in early February in Brussels. Guardamar had a counter and tourism presence in the pavilion of Turespaña, aimed at specifically promoting the Region of Valencia. In addition to Guardamar, Benidorm, Calpe, El Campello, Elx, the Provincial Tourist Board and beach municipalities of Valencia and Castellón all
attended as part of the regional offer. Belgian tourism has been confirmed as one of the fastest growing markets in recent years, and there is also an increase in queries from potential Belgian clients who want to buy second homes in the municipality. Many of these stay at tourist accommodation in Guardamar in order to look for properties of interest. The average Belgian tourist is upper-middle class and usually stays in hotels, apartments,
bungalows and caravans. The enquiries are mainly from Dutch language (flamingos) although there is an increasing number of French language (walloons) in comparison to previous years. Belgian tourism represents 4 percent of the total of visitors to Spain. In the case of Guardamar, the figures show that the city is currently above the national average, going from 3 percent in 2012 to the current 5 percent of foreign visitors handled in the Tourist Information office in Guardamar.
World Heritage bid The Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Ángel Fernández, has attended the presentation of the website, prepared by the school ‘Manuel Riquelme’ in Hurchillo aimed at having the Palm Grove of San Antón recognised as a World Heritage Site. As part f the draft application the website will collect signatures to support the bid which will then be made formally to Unesco. The web portal can be found at: www.elpalmeraldeorihuela.com The school, which is part of the Associated Schools of Unesco, has begun a collection of signatures with the objective of obtaining “a million supporters that will ensure this candidacy”, explained The Director of the School, Joaquín Marzá, while adding “the website
is translated in to three languages in which we include photographs, information of interest, as well as a short story about El Palmeral”. Likewise, the Councillor for the Environment stressed the importance of this initiative “to which we give our support
because we applaud its focus on environmental awareness”, he
added that the Government team “will intensify our efforts to achieve this goal, starting with the fight against the weevil which threatens the Palm groves.” Councillor Fernandez also commented that the Department of Environment, “will continue in this line of work linked to educational centres as vital activities to promote environmental education from an early age”. The Councillor said that the plan is recognised and wanted and that getting the Palm Grove declared a World Heritage Site is of prime importance to Orihuela.

Brit accused of beating another to death is jailed A British man has been imprisoned after beating another Brit to death in a fight at a hotel in Tenerife. The partner of the accused was released yesterday after testifying in court. The victim has been named 36 year old Daryl Bhandal, a father with two children who was on holiday from Woolwich in London. The accused, John R, was detained in the early hours of last Saturday for killing Mr Bhandal after a fight in a hotel in Puerto de Santiago. He was provisionally taken into custody as the single suspect for the crime of murder. His partner, Michelle A.P. was also arrested for her part in the tragedy. She has now been released, but with charges remaining. The pair were at the disposition of the Instruction Court 2 in Arona at 9.30am, more than 48 hours after they were detained by Local Police officers from Santiago del Teide and Guardia Civil agents from Playa San Juan. Before making the order for admission to provisional prison and without bail, the judge took into account the testimonies of two witnesses. They both spoke of
a ‘brutal’ attack and the high level of aggression suffered by the victim. Daryl Bhandal died in hospital around 3am last Saturday morning, the day after his 36th birthday, after suffering severe head injuries. The initial fight broke out earlier inside a hotel bar in Puerto de Santiago at midnight on the Friday. That same day, 10th February Bhandal had arrived on the island to celebrate his birthday. He was the father of two young children. According to accounts given, at the time of the fight both men were drunk. This was confirmed by the witnesses who gave statements to the Police Officers when they arrived. During the fight, Bhandal was also allegedly beaten by the detained woman with a plastic sign which marked a wet floor. The victim had fallen down during the attack and was semiconscious, and presumably, according to police sources, the aggressor returned to his hotel room. However, when he saw he had been injured from a bite or punch on his lip, he went back to Mr
Bhandal and was seen attacking him again, punching and kicking him. John R was also taken to the Sur health centre before being released back to his hotel. Having been told what had happened local police officers and Guardia Civil agents arrived and arrested the suspects. Given that the crime is a murder investigation, after conducting initial enquiries, the matter was placed into the hands of the Territorial Team of the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil in Playa de las Américas. The body of Mr Bhandal was taken to the Legal Medical Institute in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where an autopsy was performed. He was a fit man and loved the gym, as his healthy body showed, the 27 year-old attacker is also strong and muscular as indicated by the fatal injuries he inflicted. The Government Sub-Delegate for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Guillermo Díaz Guerra and the Mayor of Santiago del Teide, Emilio Navarro, congratulated the officers for their prompt action and handling of the incident.

Tips to stop your skin from aging It’s been said that beauty is only skin deep…which means we really need to look after our skin; especially at this time of year when harsh winds and false sources of heat can dry out your complexion, leaving it flaky and red. The excesses of Christmas, rich foods and alcohol can also play havoc causing blemishes and breakouts. The body’s largest organ is also its most visible, with around 20 square feet of it covering the average adult. Keeping our skin healthy, then, is essential to maintaining a youthful appearance. The bad news is that time waits for no one, and time takes its toll on our skin. You cannot stop the aging process. However, the good news is that everyone can take the following steps to reduce and minimise the effects. Get enough sleep It’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason: like the rest of your body, your skin recovers and repairs itself while you snooze. It produces new collagen, which prevents sagging and wrinkles, while extra blood flow yields a healthy, youthful complexion. Beware of pillow Pressing your face against the wrinkly fabric of a pillow can cause “sleep lines” that turn into wrinkles over time. The solution: Sleep on your back; or use satin, silk or high-thread-count pillowcases. Always wash your face Use a gentle face cleanser in the morning and before bed to remove dirt and oil that can cause breakouts and bacterial infections, which in turn can lead to wrinkles and acne scarring. Simple soap is best avoided, as it can dry out your skin. Micellar water is affordable, easy to use and suitable for all skin types. Moisturise (especially at night) Any emollient, even the cheap stuff, plumps up fine lines and slows the appearance of wrinkles. Lotions containing basic hydrators like glycerine or shea butter do the trick, while higherend options include ingredients designed to boost cell turnover and collagen growth, and eliminate free radicals. Moisturiser should be applied
soon after your face-cleansing routine, but especially before bed, when our skin best absorbs therapeutic ingredients. Drink plenty of water Quaffing at least eight glasses of water a day keeps you hydrated and prevents dry, flaky, dull skin. Adding fresh fruit slices to your water is a win-win: it makes it tastier, and adds skin-saving antioxidants including vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene. And on that note… Eat and drink the right stuff Milk does double duty when it comes to skin health: it hydrates like water, but is also packed with proteins, amino acids, minerals (like calcium) and vitamins such as Vitamin A and Vitamin E that nourish the skin. What should you eat with that tall glass of milk? It’s simple; lots of fruit and vegetables. Consume at least eight servings a day, and you’ll get all the antioxidants you need for optimal skin health. Take your vitamins and minerals When life gets in the way of the perfect diet, vitamin and mineral supplements can fill in the gaps. Topical calcium creams are particularly effective when it comes to skin rejuvenation, while vitamin E and C tablets are skin-friendly standbys. There are products that provide a complete skincare vitamin and mineral pack that you take every day to boost your skin from the inside out such as Perfectil and Skin Vitality 2. Cut down on coffee Coffee is nearly 99 per cent water, but there’s enough caffeine in a few cups to lead to dehydration. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it makes us urinate. Use the loo more often than usual without replacing the lost water, and bam: you’re dehydrated, which, as we know, is bad for your skin. Cut down on alcohol Alcohol is even worse than caffeine when it comes to dehydration. Its effects are two-fold: it decreases production of the hormone that allows the body to reabsorb water, and it depletes bodily fluids when it results in vomiting.
Cut down on sugar Never mind the effects on your waistline; too much sweet stuff in your diet contributes to the breakdown of collagen, which gives your skin its strength and structure. Level your gaze Repetitive movements cause wrinkles, which is why happy people have laugh lines and crow’s feet around the eyes. Laughing and blinking can’t be helped, but certain motions, such as looking down at a computer screen or smartphone, can be avoided simply by elevating the device or changing your position. Exercise How does a workout keep skin youthful? Let us count the ways: 1. That post-gym glow, caused by improved blood circulation, helps your skin in the long term, too. 2. Firm muscle tone stops skin from sagging. 3. Exercise reduces stress and we already know how the “Sword” hurts our skin as well as our general well-being. 4. Vigorous activity and hitting the showers afterwards helps shed dead skin cells. Speaking of stress… Keep stress at bay The “S-word” is one of the biggest health hurdles we face, and it is especially hard on our skin. Stress causes blemishes and rashes, and makes us frown and squint, movements that etch permanent lines into our faces over time. The good news is that stress can be staved off in any number of ways, from doing the things that we enjoy and getting a good night’s
sleep to deep-breathing exercises and meditation. This brings us to… Exfoliation Removing dead skin from our bodies, whether by scrubbing in the shower or visiting the spa, unclogs pores and makes skin more receptive to moisturisers. That said; exfoliating should be done on a weekly, not daily, basis, as it can defeat the purpose of moisturising by drying out the skin. Respect the sun There’s ageing, and then there’s photoageing. The latter refers to the wrinkling, spotting and loss of skin elasticity caused by exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. That is why sunscreen may well be the most important lotion you apply to your face – and something that your should do every single day after your moisturiser. Another tip: Make sure your sunscreen is broad-spectrum and at least at SPF 30 for your face as this will protect your skin from the UVA rays that windows won’t stop. Turn down the heat Sitting too close to a space heater or fireplace for extended periods of time can break down the collagen in our skin, causing it to sag and wrinkle. What’s a safe distance? At least 10 feet, experts say. So pull on an extra jumper, rather than curling up in front of the fire. Butt out Smoking cigarettes and exposure to second-hand smoke both break down the collagen and elastin in your skin,
leaving it dull and saggy. Your complexion will brighten noticeable once you stop smoking and you will avoid that puckered look around your lips. Hands off Leaning your face on your hand or picking at dry skin and blemishes carries bacteria onto your face, which in turn can trigger or worsen breakouts. So leave your face alone. Use your own makeup Sharing makeup with friends can spread infections ranging from cold sores to pink eye, all of which take their toll on your skin and your general appearance. Don’t overdo it with makeup Too much makeup can clog pores and cause acne. It’s often a good idea to go without every few days to give your skin a much-needed break. You can help by choosing make-up that is friendly to your specific skin type or conditions, such as rosacea or acne

info: 966 733 314 667 817 546 Bereavement…Part 2 We touched last week on the subject of bereavement. Always a difficult subject, and a time when very few of us can find the right words to say to the bereaved person. What we need at times of bereavement, primarily, is someone who can listen empathetically. Sometimes saying nothing and just letting a person cry is
as helpful as anything. Hugs can also be good right now. Grief is like a roller coaster and someone may be up one day and down the next, this is normal. Accept that this is how they feel and if they have a down day allow them to have this. Enforced cheerfulness isn’t always something the bereaved can manage. It is also helpful to find out if they have other support, in other words someone to
talk to. Don’t try to ignore the bereaved because you don’t know what to say, we often feel very isolated after losing someone, especially a partner, so it is really important to allow the bereaved to talk - just be a good listener. Some things are unhelpful and to be avoided. This includes words such as “face your grief and deal with it”, “the pain will go away faster if you ignore it”, “Be strong” - not a bit helpful and trying to tell someone to stop crying isn’t good as crying is a normal part of grieving. Things such as “well he/she didn’t suffer much” or “I know how you feel”, “well you are young enough to find somebody else” or “give it a year and then you will feel better” are all things we should try to avoid saying. Words of advice may not be asked for, but knowing what would be appropriate to say if you are asked can be helpful... “Try not to make major changes right away, allow a litte time before moving house, changing jobs etc.”“Professional help may be needed, there are bereavement counsellors here in Spain locally”, perhaps find out a contact number to pass on to your friend. Making a doctors appointment for them may be helpful as they may need help with not sleeping, eating etc. It is difficult to say much in a short article but hopefully here are a few helpful hints here to help you help a friend through a bereavement. In our next article on the subject, we are going to look at what the bereaved can do to help themselves a little. Lynda Gibson

Val from La Marina asks: Hi Aunty. I stupidly downloaded a free PDF file converter and now it seems my Google browser has been taken over by something called ‘My Web Search’. Is there an easy way to get rid of it and back to my Yahoo page? Aunty Says: Hi Val. You may be lucky and find that this annoying hijacker hasn’t already buried itself too deeply into Windows. In Chrome click on the 3 small dots in the top right corner and go to “settings” and under the “On start up” section click on the “Set Pages” link and make sure www.yahoo.com is the only entry. Also go down to the ‘Search’ section and click on the ‘Manage Search Engines’ button and add Yahoo and delete any other entries. I would strongly recommend a full scan with Malwarebytes and your favourite Antivirus program just to be sure. Gavin via email asks: Hi Aunty. I regularly use the number keys on the right hand side of my keyboard but they sometimes don't seem to

work. I can get by using the numbers on the top of the keyboard but as a semi retired accountant I am so used to using a calculator which has the same layout as my laptop keyboard. Aunty Says: Hello Gavin. This is known as the “number pad” and can usually be switched on or off by pressing the Num Lock key (Bloq Num on a Spanish keyboard). This key is normally near the number pad and there is often a light to indicate when it is active. Paul via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have recently noticed that my downloads and email attachments that I do from the internet have started saving in a different folder. My son had created a folder on my USB external disk called “Store” especially for storing all of my downloaded pictures, films, music etc. but Chrome now seems to save things into my downloads folder on my main C: drive which is now warning me that it is full. Aunty Says: This setting is easy to change Paul and you can get to it from the settings option in Chrome. Click on the 3
small dots in the top right corner and go to “settings” and at the bottom, click on the “Show advanced options” and look for the section called “Downloads” where you can specify where you want any downloaded stuff to go. Tim via email asks: Hello Aunty. I’ve have had google.co.uk as my main startup home page for years but now when I go on the Internet it has gone. I can get it by typing it into the space at the top but when I restart my laptop it has gone again. Aunty Says: Hello Tim. I have always used google.co.uk as my homepage as it is safe and probably the best place to start searching for stuff. As with the above answers, you can easily reset or change your homepage via the settings option in Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Well that’s all for another week. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeo ple.com and I will see if I can get you sorted.

December floods result in action Europe feels the The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascunana, along with the councilor for the Environment and the Councillor for Emergencies have met with the President of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, Miguel Angel Ródenas, the President of the Orihuela Water Court, Francisco Simón, along with other representatives of these entities to discuss the December floods. The purpose of the meeting was to review the incidents of the torrential weather in December Decisive meeting and to analyse the cause of localised issues and provide possible solutions to them. To this end, the Town Hall has addressed the most stressed points of the River Segura that were identified during
the past floods. Also assessed were the connection points of the river to its source and the old channel where the Norias Moquita and Pando are located. The team
also discussed the loss of flow due to the lack of dredging of the channels of both the river Segura and the Azarbe Reguerón. The three institutions have evaluated
possible solutions to these issues in order to avoid possible future incidents. Solutions range from simple measures to larger project works, and it is precisely at this point that the CHS has stated that it has already requested funding from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to address some of the improvement projects highlighted during the meeting. The CHS hopes that the response by the Ministry will be prompt and said that once they know the final budget they will jointly evaluate with the City Council and the Water Court the priority of projects to be undertaken. The Mayor also requested that the CHS and the Water Court take an active participation in the municipal emergency committee CECOPAL in order to tighten coordination in cases of emergencies.
Blue skies from now on? For those of us of a certain vintage, myself included, the EFL Cup Final between Manchester United and Southampton on Sunday (26th February) will stir memories of the 1976 FA Cup Final. Despite Second Division Southampton upsetting the odds and winning 1-0 it was not an era-defining final in the way 1953, 1965 or 1973 were, but the pitch was immaculate and the sun shone – a foretaste of the summer to follow. The summer of 1976 was the warmest of the century. Friday 3rd August 1990 was declared the hottest day of the 20th Century – a day I remember distinctly being the fifth birthday of my eldest son, his little friends not interested in the bouncy castle hired for the occasion in favour of being continually doused by the garden hose, but for the most prolonged spell without rain 1976 eclipsed previous records.
With the timing for which British weather is renowned, the last time it rained for over three months that summer was Monday 31st May – a Bank Holiday, naturally. That date has entered the annals of rock music history due to a skyscraper
performance, even by their unique standards, by The Who, headlining a one day festival at Charlton Athletic football ground. It was a grim day at The Valley, the atrocious weather more comparable with November than Whitsun, the huge crowd bad-tempered and drenched. But
such is mythology surrounding this monumental show, it is claimed that twenty minutes before they went on the Almighty, clearly a Who fan, intervened – as the rain stopped and a late-evening sun appeared in the south London sky. Which is pretty much where it stayed until September - such was the drought of 1976, Britain suffered its first hosepipe ban since World War Two, with standpipes appearing in towns and cities where the water shortage was at its worst. This sweltering summer also brought a tour by the West Indies cricket team, their demolition of England at The Oval in late-August taking place at a venue where the normally green outfield had been scorched away almost to dust. So Southampton to beat Manchester United on Sunday, West Indies to overcome England in the cricket and a long, hot summer for the UK? We shall soon find out. Neil Sambrooks
squeeze as Spain's veggie crops suffer Vegetable lovers across Europe have been making hard choices this winter after storms battered fields in southeast Spain, the continent's main fruit and vegetable patch. Courgette prices are soaring, but shoppers are also thinking twice before shelling out for pricier tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. Some British supermarkets have even resorted to rationing sales of broccoli and lettuce in light of plummeting harvests. The vast fields along Spain's Mediterranean coast usually stay warm enough to produce year-round, even in winter. But torrential rains hit the region late December, followed by shock snowfalls in January -- areas near Murcia, in the heart of the farming zones, had not seen a snowflake in 34 years. For most of the year, Spain supplies around 30 percent of the main fresh fruits and vegetables on European shelves. In winter, this proportion rises to half -- and to a whopping 80 percent when it comes to lettuce. After the bad weather hit, a Spanish federation of agricultural exporters reported a 30-percent drop in European shipments. The COAG farmers' union says output has halved in the worst-hit regions. Some farmers “have lost their entire crop”, said Andres Gongora, COAG'S Almeria director. The province of Murcia, which exports two-thirds of Spanish lettuce, a trade worth 423 million euros ($450 million), has been particularly hit. Young lettuces, growing in open fields after sprouting from seeds in greenhouses, were destroyed. After the foul weather receded, a thick coat of thawed mud held up replanting in many places. “We won't be able to plant here this year,” said Javier Soto, manager of spinach and melon growers Agrar Systems near the town of Murcian town of Torre Pacheo, pointing to a field gouged out by a muddy torrent. Adding to the veggie crunch has been
heavy snowfall in northern Italy, another major supplier to Europe. Thousands of growers there have lost their crops, with expected losses of to around 400 million euros, according to Italy's main farmers' union. The double whammy is now being felt in European stores.

Price hike Lettuce prices have doubled in Germany, and even tripled in Finland. In France, courgettes fetched four to five times their normal price in mid-January. Spanish supplies of iceberg, romaine and other types of lettuce had already been hit by a dry autumn, and artichoke harvests had fallen by a fourth. British supermarket chains had not immediately grasped how dire the situation was and had not reacted. In Germany and northern Europe, produce stalls are not as packed as usual, but stores have managed to avoid drastic measures. Spain's agriculture minister expects production to recover in a few weeks, with producers aiming to be back on track by early March. But for lettuce grown in open fields, the wait could extend into April. More generally, restaurant prices face price-hike risks, especially because spring/summer menus are due to be updated. So even though higher produce prices may prove short-lived diners may be paying the bill for months.

Spain slammed for fossil fuel subsidies Spain is among the European Union member states with the lowest levels of environmental taxes. The latest figures from Eurostat, from 2014, show that Spain collected €19.2 billion from taxes on pollution, transportation, energy and the use of natural resources, equivalent to just 1.85 percent of GDP, compared to the EU average of 2.5 percent. Half of these kinds of taxes were paid directly by consumers through their electricity bill or at the gas pump. In recent years, multilateral organisations such as the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have all called on the Popular Party (PP) administration of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to raise so-called green taxes and the government is putting the finishing touches to a new tax on hydrocarbons in response. No details are known, but the government has told Brussels that it plans to raise around €500 million more in environmental taxes in 2017. A comprehensive new European Commission report looking at how EU environmental policies and laws are applied on the ground across the 28country bloc reminds the Spanish government that in 2014 it tasked a committee of experts headed by economist Manuel Lagares to list tax reform proposals. That committee came up with several recommendations to “harmonise and improve the functioning of environmental taxes in Spain, increasing revenue in a logical and sustainable way.” But the
recommendations “do not form part of the tax reform approved in Spain at the end of 2014,” said the Commission in its European Implementation Review package. “Reducing subsidies that are damaging to the environment is another key challenge,” notes the European Commission. “Spain is still subsidizing fossil fuels, local coal, company cars and diesel,” it says, adding: “Spain has no overall strategy to eliminate environmentally harmful subsidies.” The European Commission illustrates this use of fossil fuel subsidies through the so-called diesel-gasoline differential, saying, “This is not justified from an environmental perspective,” pointing out that “diesel emits higher levels of several atmospheric pollutants and should be taxed higher.” But Spain’s taxes on diesel are lower than on gasoline. The result is more diesel cars. “Currently in the EU more than 55 percent of new registrations are diesel cars; while in Spain this goes up to 63 percent.” A recent study by three Spanish academics on green policies entitled Las Nuevas Reformas Verdes (New Green Reforms) concludes: “Environmental tax has still not managed to carry out a relevant role in international tax reform due to institutional restrictions.” It adds: “In the case of Spain, environmental taxes have so far not played a relevant role. The government has always been reticent about incorporating these instruments and has only done so tangentially to resolve short-term revenue or regulatory problems, which is why Spain is currently at the bottom of European rankings in the
use of these taxes.” The authors argue that “the academic evidence shows major possibilities for these taxes in Spain, with important improvements in collection (between €1.6 billion and €32.8 billion), reductions in CO2 emissions of up to 2.5% and with reduced impact on GDP and employment.” Blame They blame the Spanish government and problems related to competitiveness for the delay in imposing more green taxes, explaining that the difficulties the tax authorities face in creating a new levy are greater than reforming an existing one. The authors point out that Spain is still heavily dependent on imported energy and that more taxes would further increase costs and damage competitiveness in the short term. Other experts say that the energy industry is pressuring Spain’s central and regional governments to prevent them from raising taxes. The European Commission also highlights lack of coordination between Spain’s devolved regions, which was signaled in the report headed by Manuel Lagares. “Many environmental taxes, for example, concerning waste management, water abstraction, water pollution, wastewater, and air pollution are adopted and implemented at regional and even at local level, with a high normative dispersion and different approaches,” it says, adding: “This heterogeneous situation may lead to market fragmentation and economic inefficiencies.”

Tales from the Top Flight COSTA COBRAS RFC ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
You see, I like Sean Dyche. A lot. I don’t like Joey Barton. A lot. I like nonleague teams remaining in the FA Cup one hell of a lot. Therefore Lincoln’s history making victory over Burnley at Turf Moor was bittersweet for me, but more sweet than bitter. Joey had enough bitter going on for everyone. Both Liverpool and Chelsea have failed to leave Burnley’s relic of a ground with a win this season, so for (insert your own suitably patronising word related to size here) Lincoln to win and become the first ever non-League side to make it into the FA Cup Quarter Finals is staggering. The Cowley brothers, who sound like a butcher shop more than the tactical masterminds they are becoming, are now the talk of the land as they have achieved more than Klopp and Conte in Lancashire. As for Joey Barton, trying to obviously get a nonLeague striker, who looked like he was off down the pub after the match, sent off is the mark of the man. Especially when you have openly called out “cheats” on social media as many times as Barton has. Still, Lincoln were more than worthy of their win and fingers crossed they get themselves a dream draw in the next round.
Cowley Brothers
Leicester, you have failed me once more. Not only did I advise a good friend not to stick a tenner on them getting relegated this season despite his gut instincts to snap up the 50/1 odds, I have tipped them openly in this column recently to go on and win the FA Cup.
Claudio Ranieri
Claudio, you can do one now. You are making me look stupid here. Leicester lost 1-0 to Millwall, and barely looked bothered to have done so. You see, a beating over two legs against Sevilla is what the Leicester boys are saving themselves for, rather than a shot at Wembley. The Millwall manager, Neil Harris, called the post-match pitch invasion “inevitable” doing his best to pretend that this result was a shock to anyone at all. Wolves fans will have been briefly hopeful that there was some momentum building in the upset snowball. Sadly for them, Chelsea had other ideas. A thoroughly professional job was done at Molineux and the Premier League leaders still look good for the double. Even the gamble of playing JT at centre back paid off. Wolves had hit Liverpool with pace in the previous round, so there was every chance that John Terry might have been blowing a little after his first attempt at catching Helder Costa, but he was rarely troubled. What odds on Terry bowing out at the end of the season lifting the

Return to winning ways for the Apollos with a convincing 12-2 victory away to Greenlands Sycamores by 134 shots to 85.Top Rink was Irene Laverick with Pat and Brian Harman winning 25-8. The other winners were Dave Davies,Norman Adcroft and Vic Mahomet 29-17, Dawn and John Taylor with Harold Charleton 2313.Barbara Cooper with Bill and Sue Jordan 22-8, and Beryl Styring, Irene Mangan and Alex Morrice 23-19. The Pioneers travelled to the notoriously fast El Rancho and only picked up 2 points losing by 123 shots to 93.However, many of the rinks were close encounters going down to the final end to decide the result. The winning rink for La Siesta came from Hilary Clarke,Molly Russell and Rab Logan who won 19-14. An in house encounter in the Fed 4’s with the Hoopoes and the Parakeets meeting. As in the first meeting between the teams it was the Parakeets who gained the bragging rights winning 6-2 and by 57 shots to 42. The Hoopoes winning rink was provided by Jack Cooper, Norman Adcroft with Tony and Val Dalton by 21 shots to 14. The Winter League team made the

long trip to Javea Green with a depleted squad, due to a sickness bug and a car breakdown, and not surprisingly found the going tough. The single point in a 111 defeat was provided by Pat Harman,Mike Edwards with Trish andPat Reilly in a 12-12 draw. The Blues entertained La Marina Seagulls and had a good 10-4 win by 142 shots to 99. The biggest win was for Dawn Taylor with Bill and Sue Jordan who won 45-4 whilst Dave Davies,John Taylor and Harold Charleton had a comfortable 2411 victory. Closer wins for Jo Elkin,Pat Moore and Vic Mahomet 25-19 and Sue Mahomet,Trish and Pat Reilly who won 20-18. The Golds travelled to Emerald Isle to play the Roundheads and came away with a narrow victory by 99 shots to 92 taking 8 points to their opponents 6. Biggest winning rink for the Golds was gained by Ron Sheldon,Val Dalton and John Clarke 29-9, whilst Hilary Clarke,Tom Heaslewood and Tony Dalton won 16-9 and Ken Stringfellow,Rod Edgerton and Tony Campbell had the narrowest of wins 16-14. famous old trophy high and shouting something that you don’t want the Queen to hear? Oxford can feel slightly unfortunate to have played a Middlesbrough side in the mood to score an entire quota of monthly goals in one go. Equally, it is not that often Boro ship two either, so maybe Oxford should have made the most of it? It could have been three, except United had a goal wrongly disallowed and, in time honoured fashion, conceded their second moments after. Ah, football and it’s predictable little in-jokes. Oxford did battle back from 2-0 down only to concede very late on and have the dream whipped away from them as quickly as it had reappeared. There are bad 0-0 draws, obviously, and there are good 0-0 draws. Huddersfield and Manchester City put on equally high octane performances in their entertaining draw. Huddersfield’s manager, David Wagner, is a Klopp disciple which means his team run around more than most. This gave City problems for the entire game as, frankly, they have several players that would rather do anything other than run around for 90 minutes. Still, both sides are still in the hat for the quarter final and will settle their differences some time soon.
S. F. Costa Cobras RFC has over the last couple of weeks continued to recruit new players from the local area, which is great to see. Organiser Dutch said, “We are also in the process of organising a fun day for the club with the help of the town hall, by doing so we wish to recruit more players of all ages from around the area, watch this space for the date.” “One of our members has also set up a club website so everybody can find out who we are. www.sfcostacobrasrfc.wixsite.com/sfcost acobrasrfc.” He continued, “On Friday, 24 February, at 21.00 there is a fun quiz at the Power Pub, which we won last time out, so hoping to stay as champions this time. “We are now training at the football ground in San Fulgencio on Monday and Wednesday from 20.30-22.00 and then
meeting up at Power Pub in the town after training and using this is our club house. All the players are training at the same time, but once we get more juniors and seniors we will be doing two separate sessions.” Everybody is welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier. So come along and join in and have fun with the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca For more information about the club contac Dutch, on 692 767 242 (whatsapp). Also I am down at Zoco market on Sunday from 09.00-13.30, so come on down and find more out about the club and rugby in the area Dutch concluded, “A big thank you to our shirt sponsors the Power Pub in San Fulgencio, Legal and Tax in Spain and Autocenter Rojales, orders for the shirt have now been taken.”

Europe’s largest child cancer centre Soccer star Lionel Messi is lending his support to a campaign to raise €60 million to build Europe’s leading child cancer hospital at Barcelona’s Hospital Sant Joan de Déu. The #paralosvalientes – meaning ‘for the brave’ - campaign will see the Argentinean international and FC Barcelona striker work alongside the FC Barcelona Foundation and the IESE business school. “It will cost €30 million to build the hospital and another €30 million to buy the proton [therapy] machine, which reduces side effects in patients,” explained Manel del Castillo, the director of the Sant Joan de Déu hospital, at the launch of the campaign at FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou soccer stadium, an event during which €3 million was raised. Messi, who attended the hospital for a growth-hormone treatment after he moved to Barcelona at the age of 13 to play for his side’s youth team, also features in a promotional video to help raise funds around the world. “For every child cancer that is detected, there are 200 cases in adults. In Spain there are 1,200 cases a year, but it is hard to find funding and we have to rely on philanthropy. This project is the dream of a lot of people, above all, children. It is an unusual disease that affects randomly. That is why we must be ready when it comes,” says Andrés
Morales, the oncologist leading the project. The plan is to double the number of patients that receive treatment at Sant Joan de Déu, which at present is 216. Aside from the €30 million required to build the hospital, a further €35 million will be needed to run it each year. “This will be done through three financing sources,” says Del Castillo. “The first will be through the public health
service, the second through agreements with other countries, and finally, a donor fund will be set up to help children in countries that do not have arrangements with ours.” Elite facility He hopes the hospital, which will be the world’s third most important in treating child cancer, will be “a worldclass elite facility, but not for the elite,” highlighting the importance of establishing strong international ties.
“Sixty years ago we had virtually no solutions for child cancer cases: today, 80 percent of children are cured. This percentage could be increased, but we need a center where the talk is about cancer the whole time and all the resources are used to solve problems,” explains Morales, stressing the need to acquire proton machines for a form of cancer treatment which brings with it fewer side effects, especially important for children. The #paralosvalientes campaign aims to raise awareness in Spain and around the world about treating child cancer. Barcelona soccer stay Lionel Messi, along with fellow soccer player Xavi Hernández and Spanish basketball stars Pau and Marc Gasol, have thrown their weight behind the fundraising drive to build the new child cancer center. Thirty-eight members and 3 guests made it to Las Colinas for this year’s Colin Arkley trophy, played in honour of a much respected former Captain and President. Clear skies and a light breeze greeted players initially, with the wind getting up during the round. The course has been in better condition on previous visits, and the poor state of the greens and some fairways, along with the course being set up long, contributed to some pretty average scoring. Only 6 players broke 30 points, with the Steve Grundy with 33 points winning Colin’s trophy on countback. The day’s results, by category, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Chris Hamblett (26 on CB), 4th Pauline Hazell (26 on CB), 3rd Norman Padmore (29 on CB), 2nd Keith Stevenson (29 on CB) and 1st Marg Birtwistle with 30 points.
Silver Category: 5th Theo Boelhouwer (25 on CB), 4th Hugh Reilly (26), 3rd Mike Jordan (27), 2nd Steve Davis (28), and 1st Steven Grundy with 33 points. Gold Category: 5th John Aitchison (31 on CB), 4th Andy Shaw (31 on CB), 3rd Steve Higgins (32 on CB), 2nd Paul Guest (32 on CB) and 1st Jamie Rorison with 33 points. The Abacus was won by Paul Cobain. Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s were won by Eva Pettersson (5), Barry Roehrig (7), Pauline Hazell (10), Alan McDonald (14) and Darren Hancock (17). Wolfpack play away on St.Valentine’s day February 14th … Society Day …. Valentine’s Day. Love was in the air but all bets were off when we got to the first tee. Twenty members and guests descended on Villamartin for our first away day of the calendar year. The wind which had prevailed for many days before had abated and the sun shone as we approached the first tee. Ah, the first tee how the fairway seems to narrow when you stand there looking out. The course, although patchy in places but with great greens played very well. All thoughts of love and kisses soon evaporated as play got underway. The front nine flowed and there were some good scores as the round progressed. Bryan Hirst, having found his mojo again was scoring freely. Several players were hard on his heels at the halfway point - but Bryan took the front nine with a score of 19 points on a
count back The back nine, for some reason, proved troublesome for most. Not so, however for Geoff Smith, who scored better than all of us. Due to a “clerical error” there was only one nearest the pin prize - on the 9th. This went to Steve Lugger. The day became long as the play slowed and the sun went down. Back at The Royal Oak there was lots of totting up to do, so the prize giving had to wait until after dinner … with full stomachs the following were the lucky players : Overall, Bryan Hirst 32 points, second Steve Lugger 30 and third Nigel Cotton with 28. Sweep winner and the prize for best guest went to Abe Numeijer. The Wolfpack play on Tuesdays and Fridays at Campoamor - if you would like to join us, please contact either Steve on 604 11 27 29 or Dave on 677 147 848.
Overall Winner Bryan Hirst (centre) with Nigel Cotton and Steve Lugger.

Blarneystone SAMM Honours Member Golf Society ABBEY ANGLING This week’s 7th round of the Abbey Angling Cup was fished at the El Bosquet Complex on the 14th February. The way the water is now fishing it is unpredictable to know what peg the winning weight is coming from, although the long back channel does not seem to fish well when under pressure, perhaps when the warmer weather arrives and the vegetation grows up things will then improve. Neil McBirnie fishing the short back channel was back to his winning ways with over 17kgs 1st Neil McBirnie with 17.180kgs fishing the pole using bread and pellet 2nd Ian Brown with 15.880kgs fishing the pole using corn and bread 3rd Dave Hoare with 11.120kgs fishing the pole using bread There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new website abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368
