It was a sea of green, white and gold on Friday as the annual St Patrick’s Day parade got underway in Cabo Roig. With an estimated 8000 spectators, and more entertainment this year than ever, the parade was a huge success.

P

opular acts included the Pirates of the Caribbean and the Transformers as well as many local bands, Torrevieja classic cars, The Costa Blanca Rawhiders motorbikes and various dancing groups. The weather was fine and the atmosphere was jovial as the parade wound its way around the traditional

route at Cabo Roig strip. Flanked fore and aft by a police escort and helped along the way by a crew of parade marshals, the cavalcade delighted crowds of spectators lining the route. The organising committee work tirelessly for months in advance to ensure the day runs well and this year was no exception. For the first time, a memorial trophy was awarded to the winning float along with the traditional cash prize. The family of Donal Raftery donated â‚Ź100 towards prize money as well as a memorial trophy which will be awarded Continued on page 10

High speed car chase on the N332 Five police units from Torrevieja, Pilar and Orihuela were involved in a high speed car chase on Wednesday 15th March. The driver was eventually apprehended at midnight after a chase worthy of an action movie along the N332 from Pilar de la Horadada until Torrevieja. The driver was eventually stopped and arrested in Torrevieja. The pursuit began in Mil Palmeras when a local police patrol saw a vehicle doing strange manoeuvres at excessive speed on a side road. The police tried to stop the driver but when he realised he was being followed he increased his speed even more. In his attempt to escape he jumped several traffic lights and ignored road signs. The driver then set off on the N332 in the direction of Torrevieja

and continued to be pursued by the police. In his effort to shake off the patrol cars he hit the curbs of several roundaboutsbut still refused to stop. During the chase, other local police forces were informed as well as the Guardia Civil. Police patrols were set up along the route and there was a collision with a police car that was trying to intercept it in Orihuela. The driver showed total recklessness and lack of concern for the safety of other road users. Eventually the car stopped and the driver was arrested in Torrevieja by the Park of Nationsand camera footage of the 15 km chase was available as evidence. The driver is to be charged with a number of road safety offences. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Benijofar Orihuela NEWS: vet jailed road race for murder Carnival may be well and truly over and the Easter processions to look forward to, but there’s another date to put in your diary. The popular May Fair will be held this year in Torrevieja from the 10th to the 14th May. This festival is characterised by its flamboyant sevillanas costumes and the variety of traditional paella available in its marquees. For five days the fishing port area of Torrevieja is taken over by marquees from which different associations sell their food and drink and their members provide free entertainment as they dance flamenco and celebrate the Andalucian traditions. The event begins on Wednesday 10th May with the usual inauguration of the switching on of the fair lights. Throughout the next few days there are scheduled events in the evening including displays of flamenco and musicians and singers. However, one of the most popular parts of the festival is the horse parade at the weekend when people arrive from locally and further afield to show off their horses, and sometimes carts too. If you are in or around Torrevieja during these dates it is definitely one to make a note of.

Torrevieja’s symphonic orchestra Saturday March 18th saw the most recent performance of Torrevieja’s symphonic orchestra at the International Auditorium. If you missed this you might like to know Continued on page 5

A Benijofar vet has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he confessed to killing his wife and admitted disposing of the body, which has never been found. Section Seven of the Provincial Court for Alicante, which is based in Elche, handed down the prison term to Marcelo Gurruchaga, a veterinarian who killed his wife at the clinic he owned in Benijófar after a jury came to a guilty verdict. The court ruled that he had committed murder but the sentenced was mitigated by the delays in the case coming to trial. During the trial, the defendant confessed to having given an anaesthetic to his wife and killing her, and then later disposing of the body, which was never found. After the reading of the verdict, the Prosecution Service asked for a sentence of 10 years for the crime of murder, which the prosecution and the defence agreed to. The crime happened in 2013 in Benijófar, when the man and his wife, who was aged 46 and worked with him, stayed overnight at the clinic. During the night he drugged her and used unknown surgical tools on her as a result of which she died. Afterwards he loaded the body into the boot of his car and later hid it in an unknown place.

Councilor for Sports, Dámaso Aparicio, has presented details of the second annual Urban Cross, organised by the ‘Diocesan College Oratory Festivo’ and which will be celebrated next Sunday, 26th March starting at 10.30am. The Councillor for sport said: “After the success of the first edition, this year the urban cross returns with a new route that combines the city with nature with the route going through the river mota. There will be two version this year, a race and a march.” As well as health and sport the event will also have a link to charity as the money collected from the entry fees will be donated to the Diocesan Mission and Promotion Foundation with the aim of building a school in the Congo, in Lubumbashi, explained the Director of Centre, Ramón Cano. The Cross of the Oratorio Festivo will again be staged in collaboration with the of Club Atlético Oriol. Club representative Hassan Ouharrouch explained that the categories will consist of a race of 7 kilometres or 3.5 kilometres, as well as a march or walk of 3.5 kilometres. The event is also open to children through the children's race in which they can compete. Those interested in participating in any of the categories can register through www.asuspuestos.com until Thursday, 23rd March. Councillor Aparicio congratulated the centre for “continuing with this great event which is open to the public of all ages” and he encouraged all residents to participate and join in the support for a good cause. Campaign to keep BITE SIZE kittens with their mums NEWS: Councillor Carmen Morate from Torrevieja town hall, is campaigning to ensure that stray kittens do not get separated needlessly from their mums. Sometimes people come across the strays, who may look abandoned, with the best of intentions of rescuing them. However, things are not always as they seem. The mother might have left the litter to seek food or have been frightened off by the presence of humans. This can then lead to the litter appearing to be abandoned and their resulting removal when the mother is quite close by. The

kittens, you should only remove them if they seem to be in immediate and serious danger and if they are on their own and separated from the others. The unnecessary removal of the kittens may not only lead to ill health for them but will also fill up the new cat shelter where they have been desperately trying to reduce the number of inmates. The removal of the kittens can also have serious health implications for the mother, possibly leading to mastitis as well distress for the cat as they seek their kittens for hours on end. Councillor

Continued from page 3 that there are two more performances planned. One on April 22nd and one on May 13th. The performance on April 22nd will be conducted by José Francisco Sánchez and will feature the romantic works of Brahms and Schubert. Soloists will include Laura Rodriguez and Ryo Mee-Hae. You can keep up to date with the orchestra and its plans by visiting the website www.orquestasinfonicadetorrevieja.com Tickets are available at a price of €6 to €16 from the municipal ticket office in front of Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre. The ticket office is open from 10am to 1pm and from 5pm until 7pm.

Work on the indoor pool begins Work to rectify the problems with the Sports Palace swimming pool has now begun. The covered pool of the Palacio de los Deportes, has been closed due to leaks. Now, councillor Victor Ferrández has reported that work has begun on the pool which is expected to cost in the region of €7,200. The announcement will give hope to those who are missing the option of an indoor swim. However, no re-opening date has yet been announced.

Next meeting of Neighbourhood Watch The next meeting of the San Luis/ Las Siesta/ El Chaperral Neighbourhood Watch will be on Monday the 27th March at 4.30pm in Casa Ventura. The meeting will be attended by Councillor Carmen Morate, Carlos Gonzales from the foreigners’ office and the Mayor, José Manuel Dolón. The group are very active in keeping local people informed and supporting the local area. They hold meetings on the last Monday of every month and are currently looking for a new president to take over. removal of the kittens from the mother at this stage in their life can often prove to be fatal. If they are taken to the shelter they will need feeding every few hours and are at risk of infections. The advice is that if you do come across what appear to be abandoned

Morate is keen to emphasise that the best method of controlling the cat population is through the continuation of the sterilisation programme. A programme that has, to date, seen over 500 stray cats sterilised. Suzanne O’Connell

Just between ourselves Just between ourselves is the title of Bernie Comaskey’s new book – a collection of 20 original short stories from middle Ireland. An imaginative and enjoyable read – each story is thought

provoking, entertaining, some ‘laugh out loud’ funny and others, at times, tinged with sadness. Not only is the book an enjoyable read, it has a social conscience. Profits from the sales of the book are being donated by the author to the Patients Comfort Fund at St Camillus Nursing Centre. Arroces de Torrevieja The fifth ‘rices of Torrevieja’ event will take place from the 20th to the 26th March and involves 26 local restaurants. This event has become a staple feature of Torrevieja’s calendar due to its popularity. Not surprisingly the main dish on offer is rice served in different ways including de caldero, de pulpo and el marinero. The restaurants taking part each offer a menu comprising a starter, a rice dish and sweet and drink at a price of between €18 and €30. o see which restaurants are participating you can go to the website www.torreviejagastronomica.com

Starbucks in trouble The new Starbucks that has opened in Torrevieja’s Habaneras shopping centre came in for a swift closure much to their surprise. Councillor Fanny Serrano announced that the café had not provided any of the necessary paperwork. The councillor had been invited to its opening through social media which came as something or a surprise as she hadn’t sanctioned its opening in the first place. Councillor Serrano had received requests for opening licences for other premises in the centre but not from Starbucks. In spite of this lack of permission the café opened on the 2nd March and was informed on the 3rd March that they hadn’t complied with local planning requirements. They were then given ten days in which to submit the necessary paperwork. However, the papers provided did not meet requirements and last Tuesday on the 14th March the police returned to the premises with a communication that the café must be closed for the rest of the week. On the Wednesday the necessary documentation was submitted correctly and the licence was issued. However, the café will still have to pay a fine for opening without permission. Starbucks have expressed surprise at the actions of the town hall. Suzanne O’Connell

Tao, The Samurai of the Drum It was a fantastic performance on 15th March asthe company, Drum Tao, appeared at Torrevieja’s International Auditorium. They performed The Samurai of the Drum which included traditional Japanese percussion and dance as part of a heart stopping performance. However, it was a shame that although the show took place in the International Auditorium, the largest venue in Torrevieja, there were only 600 people there to watch this internationally famous dance and music act. Drum Tao have performed all over the world to an estimated seven million people and it was an exciting opportunity for the people of Torrevieja to enjoy it too. It has been suggested that the fact that it was a Wednesday and the difficulties of accessing tickets reduced the number of those attending. Tickets had to be obtained from the municipal theatre box office at specified times during the day making it almost impossible for those working to obtain them or those living outside the immediate area. However, for those who did manage to

access the tickets their efforts were well rewarded. Praise was given for the energy and the precision of the performance and these Japanese artists gave every inch as much to those who turned up as if the venue was full. Of course, the main feature of the performance was the drums and the amazing choreography that surrounded them. The Japanese company know how to make culture and ritual into entertainment and this, along with the fitness and agility of those playing made it an evening to remember for those who did turn up. Snake in the house Officers from Rojales Local Police have captured a large horseshoe whip snake that was inside a house in the area of Heredades. After being alerted by the home-owners, the officers went to the property and took the necessary precautions to capture the animal with the greatest care not to harm it. The reptile turned out to be a horseshoe whip snake (Hemorrhois hippocrepis), a non-poisonous protected species and the one in question measured more than a metre and a half in length. After catching it, environmental officers of the Valencian Government collected the snake, which was taken to the Centre for the Recuperation of Wildlife in Alicante. The Local Police thanked the homeowners for having reported the snake and so enabled them to recover it, since it is an animal that is strictly protected.

26 YEAR OLD DIES IN BIKE CRASH The young man was driving along avenida Rosa Mazón at high speed when he lost control of his motorcycle. There was nothing that the emergency services could do for him after his bike hit a lamppost on this stretch of road. The marks from the impact can still be seen on the lamppost and on the tarmac. Local police have begun an investigation into the accident which is believed may be linked to excessive speed

on the road between the Cortes Valencianas roundabout and the roundabout with access to the Avenida Delfina Viudes. Speed limits here are 50km, a maximum which is not always respected by drivers. The accident took place before 7am Sunday morning when, for reasons unknown, the driver lost control of the motorcycle which left the road and collided with the lamppost. The roads

were quiet at the time of the accident and no other vehicle was involved. The young man was well known in the area and was a volunteer for the Protección Civil de Torrevieja. His colleagues are devastated at the news and condolences were also sent by the councillor for security and emergencies, Javier Manzanares. Suzanne O’Connell

to the winning float each year. This year’s winner for best float was Leddy Contractors with a spectacular replica of a thatched cottage. Director Paul Leddy was delighted to donate the €500 cash prize to the Elche Children’s Care Home. Accepting the Donal Raftery Memorial Cup, Paul said, “It is an honour to be awarded first prize and accept the memorial cup. I'd like to thank my team for all their support. Huge thanks to the organisers of the parade - it gets bigger and better

every year and it is a testament to the organisers that it is so well attended, runs smoothly and for the work that goes into the fundraising beforehand. Speaking of fundraising, we at Leddy Contractors are huge supporters of the Elche Children's Care Home and are thrilled to donate the 500 euro cash prize to this wonderful charity.” In second place was the Trinity Bar with a cottage float complete with a garden and even some adorable grazing sheep, and in third place

was Sun Sea Adventures with mermaids in spectacular handmade costumes, bubbles and a leprechaun on a SUP board! Incidentally, Sun Sea Adventures captured some wonderful live video footage of the parade on their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/sunseaadventures) which is well worth a look. With a special mention were Los Pistoleros whose western re-enactment costumes were very much admired on the day. Organisers wanted to reiterate their thanks to

all of the officials in attendance on the day, Mayor of Orihuela Emilio Bascuñana and Sofia Alvarez, Councillor for Tourism as well as both Paudge Connolly local councillor and Eamon Scanlon TD, who travelled especially from Ireland to participate in the festivities. Parents angry at multilingual plans On Tuesday 14th March parents of children at school in Torrevieja came out in protest at the decree passed by the Valencian regional government to change the balance of languages used in schools. Parents collected outside Habaneras shopping centre to march to the town hall,

BASIC 1 BASIC 2 I N T E R M E D I AT E 1 I N T E R M E D I AT E 2 A DVA N C E D 1 A DVA N C E D 2 As you can see, with the greater percentage of subjects taught in valenciano comes permission to teach more English. However, this is all at the expense of castellano, the traditional Spanish language. Those schools who opt for the basic levels will also receive less funding. Two factors designed to encourage schools to opt for the advanced levels. Now, the primary schools in Torrevieja have cast their votes and have decided to opt for the minimum amount of valenciano – Basic 1. This means that they continue to teach most subjects in castellano. Nine out of the 11 public infant and primary schools in Torreviejahave chosen the basic level with the other two deciding not to vote and to allow the administration to determine the levels. The vote may be over but many parents in Torreviejawant the Valencian regional government to know that they are not happy with the situation. They are angry at the ultimatum given toschools which could mean an increase in the amount of subjects taught in valenciano (the regional language) instead of castellano (the traditional VALENCIANO 30% 37% 47% 47% 60% 53%

nationalities and considers itself to be a very international school. Karin is very concerned about the detrimental effect that the decree might have: ‘They are forcing Valencian upon the population of Spanish speaking areas where Valencian has never been spoken, without any consensus. A language should not be imposed but chosen. The idea of trilingual schools is ridiculous. The teachers are not prepared to teach main subjects in Valencian or English and children are not prepared to learn through these languages. Children will not learn any of the languages properly and will not learn the contents of the subjects either.’ The response of the schools in Torrevieja is reflected in Alicante province but not across the region as a whole. In Alicante provinceonly 40% of schools opted to teach higher levels of valenciano and English. This is in comparison to 83% in Castellón and 55% in Valencia itself. The difference in the results from different provinces can partly be put down to the very international flavour of many of Alicante’s schools. In Torrevieja, in particular,

CASTELLANO 57% 50% 40% 37% 23% 23%

valenciano is not commonly spoken and with so many speakers of other foreign languages adding another minority language to the repertoire is not a popular option. If the decree goes ahead as planned there will be big differences in education within the regional community. Those schools opting for advanced can teach three or four subjects in English as well as the English lesson itself. They can only teach one subject in castellano in addition to the subject’s own language class and the rest of the curriculum will be taught in valenciano. This is in contrast to those schools who have chosen the basic option and will offer all subjects in castellano except for one subject taught in valenciano and one subject (either Art or PE) taught in English, in addition to the actual English lessons. Conflict surrounding the use of regional languages was particularly high during and after the Spanish civil war. Parents locally feel that the politics of the past should not impose upon children’s education and their futures now. Suzanne O’Connell

Ombudsman warning over domestic violence helpline Domestic violence 016 helpline does not show on itemised bills, but does leave a record on a mobile phone, warns ombudsman. Telephone companies have been urged to improve their operations after the national ombudsman found the free-phone domestic violence helpline does, in fact, show up as a call having been made. The 016 line is not supposed to show on a bill, since victims who call it for help could face serious violent and possibly fatal reprisals from their abusers if it is found they had called it. Thanks to the cooperation of mobile and landline telephone operators, a call to 016 does not show up on itemised bills, but ombudsman Sonsoles Becerril warns that it shows on a mobile phone handset as an outgoing call. It is not technically possible for the number to delete itself automatically, so callers have been warned to do so manually on their mobiles if they can. Sra Becerril warns the most at-risk callers are older women, since they are not so familiar with new technology. Helpline staff always warn callers to delete the number from their phones once they hang up. It has not been confirmed whether landline phones hold a record of the number having been called – although it does not show on an itemised bill on these, either – nor whether hitting an automatic

'redial' button on a main ‘house telephone’ would result in 016 being called again. A controlling partner may check a victim’s phone use by pressing redial on a landline, so victims who are in any doubt should simply call a random number after speaking to 016, and then hang up. In the meantime, health minister Dolors Montserrat and Sonsoles Becerril will meet with phone company representatives this week to find out how the problem can be solved. For technical reasons, operators say they have no way of ensuring the number does not show up on individual mobile handsets. Calling 016 is free of charge from any mobile or landline phone, and operators are trained to set the wheels in motion to provide practical and legal assistance to ensure victims’ safety. With over 85,300 callers a year in 2015 and 2016, the helpline has broken records and last year saw the most victims ever attended to as a result of ringing 016. Run by the ministry of health, the line is called almost exclusively by women, although a certain stigma and shame still exists for male victims of domestic violence which can lead to many not reporting their ordeal, so the true number of men suffering relationship abuse is not known.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE It was almost a single-issue week for the euro, that issue being the possibility that Geert Wilders' anti-everything nationalist party could do well in Wednesday's Dutch general election. Were he to do so it would, supposedly, pave the way for an even bigger anti-EU upset in next month's French presidential election. It didn't, and the status quo was preserved. The euro enjoyed a relief rally as soon as the exit polls were revealed. Sterling had a topsy-turvy week swinging back and forth across a one-and-a-half-cent range, often for no clear reason. It was hurt by weak UK production data and by a further slowdown in the pace of wage increases and helped by one of the Monetary Policy Committee members unexpectedly voting to

increase the Bank Rate. The two big events in the dollar's week were last Friday's US employment report and Wednesday's interest rate announcement by the Federal Reserve. Both had been eagerly awaited and both were, ultimately, costly to the dollar. The strong rise in nonfarm payrolls, which beat forecast by a net 54k, was not impressive enough. The Fed's quarter-percentage-point rate increase had been so widely discounted that it came as an anticlimax when it was at last announced. The net result was a euro that was unchanged on the week against sterling. It added a cent and three quarters against the US dollar, which was the weakest among the major currencies.

Equine Shiatsu raises funds for rescued horses The first equine Shiatsu course to be held in Spain has successfully raised €695 to help ensure the safety and protection of neglected and abused horses. The course, held onsite at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre near Rojales in March was led by Finnish equine Shiatsu instructor Susanna Tuisku, assisted by Rita Uotila and Anne Hakala, who all generously donated their time and flew in from Finland especially for the event. Over the two-day course, participants were introduced to the concepts of equine Shiatsu and practiced their new skills on the centre’s rescued horses and donkeys. Participant Nicole Weinand said: “It was amazing to see the reactions when you actually did find the right place to touch – everybody was waiting for a yawn or a lick and chew to prove we’d hit the right spot.” Easy Horse Care co-founder Sue Weeding was delighted with the course and thanked Susanna, Rita and Anne for donating their time and expertise. Sue said: “Rod and I welcome any course or event that increases people's knowledge and teaches not just riding, but how to properly care for horses. It's very positive and encourages owners down the path of considering the animal’s physical and mental welfare, beyond a horse as simply something to ride.” Rita had previously donated tack and equipment to Easy Horse Care from her home in Finland, but wanted to do more and approached Sue and Rod with the idea for the course. They immediately agreed. As an assistant instructor, Rita also had the opportunity to visit the sanctuary in person. “It was wonderful to get to meet all the great characters at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre and sense the contentment among them,” she said, adding the “residents seemingly enjoyed being the centre of attention!” The money raised will go towards building a new

boundary fence at the centre to keep the rescued equines secure and better protected from extreme weather. While building has commenced, the centre recently called for further donations to increase the height of the border, a move that will provide longterm protection for the horses. You can make a secure online donation via the rescue centre’s website by visiting: www.easyhorsecare.net/donate/support-our-fencefundraiser. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. Free horse tours run throughout the afternoon and refreshments are available in the café. For more details and directions, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net. Mireille Toddington

Zingiber officinale, the common edible ginger, is one of the oldest known and most widely consumed spices and has been used for centuries as flavouring and as a treatment for all sorts of ailments from motion sickness to athlete's foot.

DESCRIPTION

Ginger is an herbaceous perennial with upright stems and narrow leaves arranged in two ranks on each stem. The edible part of the ginger plant is called “ginger root,” yet this is an error. The part of the plant that we eat is actually a rhizome, similar to those that irises grow from. The roots grow from the bottom of the rhizome. Gingers are rarely found in garden centres as potted plants because they do not have much ornamental value. The inflorescence is a small cone-like, dense spike arising from the rhizome in summer. It grows on a separate stem from the foliage stem, and the entire spike is about 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall. The bracts are green with translucent margins and the small flowers are yellow-green with purple lips and cream coloured blotches. They are very inconspicuous and not showy at all. Most gingers in cultivation are sterile cultivars grown for the edible rhizome and very rarely produce flowers.

CULTURE

Ginger is easy to culture - in fact it has been said that in warm tropical climates you can plant it at the beginning of the growing season (early spring) and not look at it again until the day you harvest it. What ginger likes is a fertile, moist soil, partial shade and warm temperatures.

What it hates is frost, direct sunlight, strong winds, and soggy, waterlogged soil. During the growing season the plants should be kept moist, but not overly wet, and fertilized on a monthly basis with a balanced fertilizer (ginger is a heavy feeder). During the winter months the plants rest. In colder climates ginger is often grown in a container and brought indoors in winter, or the rhizomes are lifted out of the soil in autumn, stored for the winter, and replanted in the early spring. The best way to start ginger is to purchase a fresh (not dried or frozen) “root” in early spring. Cut the rhizome into 1- or 2" sections - make sure each piece of the rhizome has two or more growth nodes, like the "eyes" of a potato. Let the cut ends dry out a day or so, then plant just below the soil surface in fertile, well-drained soil. Water sparingly until top growth develops, otherwise the rhizome could rot. Once established, water daily, fertilize monthly, and keep in a partially shaded location. Provided with adequate space, ginger can reach a height of 4 feet with a 2- to 3 foot spread.

HARVESTING

When you have several weeks of growing good strong stems, you can check below

the surface for plump, new rhizomes. New rhizomes will be just below the ground where you see the young, green shoots breaking through. You can slice off one of these new rhizomes for your first taste of fresh ginger. Use a sharp knife and make a clean cut. This first fruit will not be as strong as the more mature rhizomes that you will harvest later in the growing season. The typical growing season for ginger is about ten months, and then the leaves start to turn yellow and die off. This is the time to stop watering daily, cutting back to a light watering about once a month to keep the rhizomes from drying out. Each year, if you do not over-harvest your ginger, the mat of rhizomes will get thicker.

USAGE

Ginger root is widely used around the world as a spice or food additive: In India ginger is fried and eaten plain or used in curry pastes and other sauces, in Chinese cookery it is grilled and used to flavour fish and meats or for making ginger tea, in Indonesia it is boiled or fried, in Japan eaten as pickled ginger (beni shoga) and served with sushi, and in Jamaica it is used to make Jamaican jerk paste. A ginger extract with carbonated water makes the popular drink we call ginger ale, and ginger was used in the Middle Ages in Europe to flavour beer.

WELCOME TO GIJÓN with Vivalia Travel Gijón is the largest city and municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain and it is located on the Bay of Biscay, approximately 20 km north of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias.

Gijón is the largest city and municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain. Early medieval texts mention it as "Gigia". It is located on the Bay of Biscay, approximately 20 km (12 mi) north of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias.

Contemporary history In the 20th century, with the Spanish Civil War, the city supported the Republican faction. The army was located in El Coto. The resistance was eliminated in August 1936. Later, the village was the capital of the Sovereign Council of Asturias and León until 20 October 1937, when the troops of General Francisco Franco occupied the city. Ferrous metallurgy was the main industry of Gijón from the last years of the 19th century until the last decades of the 20th. Uninsa was created in 1971, and it merged with Ensidesa. In the last years of the century was converted in Aceralia, and integrated in Arcelor. The city is situated on the coast of central Asturias, from sea level to an altitude of 513 metres at Picu Samartín and 672 metres at Peña de los Cuatro Jueces, bordered on the West by Carreño, the East by Villaviciosa, and to the South by Siero and Llanera The city is situated along the Asturian coast and is distinguished by the peninsula of Cimavilla (the original settlement) which separates the beach of San Lorenzo and adjacent neighbourhoods to the east from the beaches of Poniente and Arbeyal, the shipyards, and the recreational port and the Port of El Musel to the west.

Economy For much of the 20th century the town was heavily dependent on mature heavy industries, but at the end of the Franco era, tertiary sector employment began to expand rapidly along with the city's population which by 2007 stood

officially at 277,897 for Gijón proper, and approximately 380,000 for the total Gijón agglomeration. The port is at the centre of many of the local businesses. Apart from directly port related activities, the economy is based on tourism, steel (Arcelor), other metallurgy, livestock rearing and fisheries.

Climate Gijón has a temperate oceanic climate typical of the Atlantic coast of Spain, with cool summers and wet and mostly mild winters. The onshore flow from the Atlantic Ocean creates a cool summer and mild winter climate where severe heat and very cold temperatures are rare. The narrow temperature range is demonstrated by the record August temperature being only 6.4 °C warmer than the all-time record January temperature. Summer temperatures are very consistent as proven by the fact that the all-time warmest month of August 1997 had an average temperature of 20.9 °C and no month has ever been recorded at an average high above 24.7 °C in comparison to the 23.2 °C August normal high. Another clear underlining of the marine influence is that the coolest ever August has been as near the average as 17.9 °C.

People Poorer for Passing of Pub

T

his week I see yet another prime Mullingar pub calling time for the last time. A few years back, closures like these would be a source of immense satisfaction for the remaining bars in the town, but with pubs in Ireland now closing at the rate of one a day, publicans are now asking, “who is next?” The Irish pub is the best in the world and it is sad to see so many closing down – especially in rural areas. Ok, the pub has been blamed for men losing their farms, wives and health, but this was never the fault of the pub: No hand ever lifted a glass up to my mouth other than my own. Indeed, in this regard attitudes have improved to the extent that nobody today will raise an eye-brow with a customer ordering a coffee or even a water across the counter; whereas as I wrote in my book, in my young drinking days “anyone ordering a soft drink was either (a) off it for Lent; (b) off it for November; (c) a bollox.” It is I who was the latter! The ‘Local’ used to be the centre of the community: Wakes were held there to give departed friends a “decent send off” as was the “wetting of the baby’s head” to welcome a new

arrival. Football and hurling teams were picked, deals were done and problems solved. Everyone knew or learned what was going on around them and a strong sense of “my place” was cultivated. There was banter and nostalgia;

sport and politics were dissected and any pub worth its salt carried a couple of bar room philosophers. Conversation ebbed and flowed as all waited patiently for an opening to slide in with the quick retort, quip, put-down or “good one.” Your typical publican was a highly respected pillar of the community and the facilitator through which things got done. He seemed to know people in all the right places

and he chanced more loans than the neighbourhood bank manager. A well run pub was not really a pusher of the alcohol drug, but a pleasant conjuncture of social intercourse in a homely atmosphere. The pub used to be the heartbeat of the parish and the engine room of local activity. The consistently longest lasting GAA club teams came from where there was a pub in the vicinity. This may sound like a contradiction; you could have the best pitch, a covered stand and modern changing rooms – but it was in the pub that club spirit was fuelled. When emigrants returned from England, Canada or America it was into the bosom of their school pals down at the pub, often realising for the first time that there was a special heavenly smell from a turf fire. The Irish pub became famous all over the world due to our ability to enjoy the real art of conversation without any agenda. The cut and trust of differing opinions - and the Americans in particular love the Irish flair for talking around the subject rather than getting to the point! Without the pub would we ever have had a Patrick Kavanagh or a Brenden Behan? A

James Joyce or even a Ronnie Drew? Some damage was done to the traditional pub from the 1960’s when many owners decided to “modernise” with formica topped counters and juke boxes in the lounge. Drink-driving – or more accurately soberdriving has contributed to the demise of the pub but this has to be. The real problem is deeper and more subtle. Outsiders moving into an area and commuting to work have not the same interest in becoming part of the community. Off-licence sales soar as more people choose to drink at home with their chosen friends. The old style pub, as it was, is fast disappearing into the archive of social history. On the radio we now hear nice soft advertisements promoting ‘the Local’ sponsored by the Vintners Association – a welcome bit of humility from a once powerful aggressive and selfish organisations which should have kept its eye on their own ball instead of looking for causes to fight. It wasn’t the sports club which put them out of business after all. Pubs have caused this writer both grief and gain on both sides of the counter since I started “serving my time” at the age of fifteen; but my love-hate relationship is

much more love than hate. Yes, the pub will continue, but in a changed format and there will be fewer of them. Most will have to serve food to survive and the often-too-loud background music discourages inclusive pub conversation. Pubs are suffering similarly in the UK and of course it is worth mentioning that Ireland does not have exclusivity to “The Local.” You can see how much of Coronation Street is centred in “The Rovers Return”. “The Pig ‘n Whistle” was a famous television pub in Canada and many readers will have been fans of Dianne and Sam in the American bar comedy, “Cheers” – which incidentally I visited in Boston. Could my soft spot for pubs have anything to do with the fact that in December 1968 I rambled into Bartleys Bar in Drumcree –“ just for one”, but finished up marrying the daughter? I tell you – anything is possible in the pub!!

Some people’s weakness is the strongest thing about them.

PROPERTY BLOG

FURNISHED OR UNFURNISHED? That is the question

Buying or selling property in Spain, is very different to that of the UK, and sometimes what a seller may think is standard procedure there, is not so, here. When selling a resale home, it is customary to leave all white goods, i.e. fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. together with all light fittings and ceiling fans, even if you are selling as “unfurnished.” When your home comes to the market for sale, you should always have an inventory list filled out ready to hand over to the buyer. It is much easier on everyone if the items you are including in your sale are clearly written down. You will be grateful you did this later, as there is a fine line between, what are classed as personal effects, to the regular items. Even if you have taken a dislike to your buyer, you can’t replace the fixtures with something else, “No likey, no lighty” will not work here! If you have the intention of removing any fixtures, you should change them BEFORE you list your property for sale. That way the buyer won’t have any unpleasant surprises, on the day of completion. And instead of it being a stressful day, it will go through quite pleasantly. Selling furnished? What you describe as personal effects, and what your buyer classes as personal items, can be two different things entirely. I’ve been to houses where the homeowners have stated that they will leave the property fully furnished, with the exception of personal effects. This sounds straightforward, but it can be messy if not written down and explained exactly which items they are categorizing as “personal.” When it came down to the crunch, they said the “dining table and chairs were gifts, meaning they are personal!” Well that may be so, but no buyer will automatically assume that a dining table would be something “personal” to the homeowner, unless it has been agreed in writing first.

Rebecca Serwotka – Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.”Request your FREE copy today! If you have sold your property fully furnished, unless specifically agreed that the buyer would prefer the house to be empty at the time of reservation, you have no obligation to remove the furnishings that were to be included in the sale. If your buyer changes their mind between reservation and completion, and no longer wish to have the furniture, then your Real Estate Agent will make the buyer aware that they must be the ones to remove any unwanted items, AFTER they take possession. Statistics show that selling a property furnished will always achieve a quicker sale than one that is unfurnished. Even if the buyer doesn’t have the same taste in home furnishings, they will be grateful they have something to sit on and somewhere to sleep, when they move in. So, as long as you have your inventory list ready, there will be no hard feelings when your completion day arrives. Everyone will be much happier knowing what will be included in their purchase. And remind them, if it’s not on the list, it won’t be staying! Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

The price of parenthood Spain’s government has rejected proposals for maternity and paternity leave to be equal in length because it would cost the State too much – a move that has sparked criticism from the opposition. Podemos and the PSOE, the reigning PP’s main left-wing rivals, accused president Mariano Rajoy's cabinet of being ‘twofaced’ when they say women’s rights matter, but that when it came to putting actions into words, it was a different story. Maternity leave in Spain is four months, or 16 weeks, whilst paternity leave has recently doubled from two weeks to four, but campaigners say this is not enough as it prevents fathers from helping out more with childcare and household tasks, since they have to go back to work. It is also unfortunate for the fathers, since they are denied the opportunity to spend time with their newborn after the first four weeks – and for all-male couples, neither father is able to care for the child without giving up his job and suffering the consequent loss of income. Dissenters, however, say maternity leave should be longer than paternity leave, because mothers have the tiring ordeal of pregnancy and childbirth to recover from and, if they are able

'Camino de Santiago' murder suspect in the dock The only suspect in the murder of American-Chinese tourist Denise Pikka Thiem, who was killed whilst walking the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, is now on trial but has so far refused to testify. Miguel Ángel Muñoz Blas, 41, insists he is innocent, despite creating and uploading a video of a reconstruction of the crime and allegedly bragging about how he helped police find the body. Whilst the prosecution considers his declining to testify as a tactic, Muñoz Blas’ lawyer says his client felt ‘overwhelmed’ by the situation and ‘was unable to think straight’. “What the prosecution has presented as irrefutable proof

is in fact only indications of my client's guilt,” says the solicitor. These ‘indications’ include Denise's blood on a hacksaw found in his isolated rural home near where the US national went missing. No other DNA from the victim was found in the house, but Muñoz Blas knew exactly where her body was when the police came to search the area. She was naked and both her hands had been sawn off, although it is not known whether this was before or after she was killed. Denise, 41, had last been seen in the Hotel Suero de Quiñones in the León province village of Hospital de Órbigo on 4th April, 2015, and her body was found five months later near Astorga. A man then described as a ‘local hermit’ was arrested in nearby Grandas de Salime, just over the

northern border in Asturias. He led officers to a piece of land he owned close to Astorga, where Denise's decomposed body was found in a shallow grave made from tree branches. Muñoz Blas lives in a log cabin in the outskirts of Astorga, having moved there just three years before the murder. Locals claimed they were ‘not surprised’ when he was arrested, and described him as ‘very bad-tempered’, saying the police had ‘had him on record for years’ and that he would ‘chase female pilgrims, insulting them’. The prosecution believes the area where the body was found was ‘so remote’ that nobody bar the killer would have found it. It is also suspected he cut Denise's hands off to hide evidence of a struggle between them when he killed her.

to do so, many will want to breastfeed their babies. The opposition says with paternity leave being just 25 percent of maternity leave, it automatically means parents are forced into the traditional role of male breadwinner and female homemaker. In addition, as 80 percent of pregnancies in Spain are unplanned, they typically occur in the 30s, when women are just beginning to gain a foothold on the career ladder – by the time they have settled into a professional routine with some stability, they are less fertile due to their age and accidental pregnancies are less likely. Six in 10 women (58.1 percent) in Spain postpone or give up their careers to become the main caregiver when they become mothers, whilst only 6.2 percent barely one in 16 – new dads put their professional lives on hold, according to a study. The figures show that men continue to be very much in the minority as primary caregivers and very few parents share childcare equally.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that more men would like to become ‘house husbands’, part- or full-time, and spend more time with their children, but the social assumption of childcare being a mother's role works both ways: some mums put up great resistance to dads’ desires to dedicate his life to the kids, considering it 'her patch' and leaving him feeling ‘left out’. Yet in many cases, it is probably a case of the four-month maternity leave and even longer spent breastfeeding simply continuing unchecked and unquestioned. Spain is, however, no different to the rest of the western world, although society is clearly changing. Statistics show that whilst 75 percent of families in the 1950s had one breadwinner, who was practically always the father, nowadays 60 percent of couples with children are twoincome families. For those who can afford for one parent to work part-time or not at all, the main factor considered tends to be who has the highest income or the job that can most easily be put on hold and resumed months or years later. But in the UK, for example, fathers are the primary caregiver in only one in 10 heterosexual non-separated couples with children.

Pricey broadband Spain is the second-most expensive country in the European Union for broadband internet, beaten only by Croatia, according to a study by the EU Commission. The cheapest monthly offer for a connection with a speed of between 12 and 30MBps (megabytes per second) comes in at 2.7 percent of a person's gross income – way above the EU average of 1.18 percent, according to the report. The cheapest connections in the EU are found in Sweden, Germany, Finland and Austria, in that order. An annual study known as the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) measures advances in digital technology in the EU-28 and examines five areas – connectivity, human capital, internet use, integration of technology, and online public services. When taking all five into account, Spain is fourteenth out of the 28, up from number 15 last year,

and joins nine other countries which fall somewhere around the middle – Austria, Germany, Malta, Lithuania, Portugal, France, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Latvia. Despite being the secondmost expensive, Spain scores points for being among the most ‘online’ countries in the EU: use of modern technology by companies, and the provision of public services by internet, is above the European average. And Spain has improved in all areas since last year, with the exception of human capital. Across the board, taking all five aspects into account, Denmark is a clear winner, followed closely by Finland, Sweden, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium. It perhaps comes as no surprise that Scandinavia – with the exception of Norway and Iceland, which are not EU members – and the Benelux countries score highly, although outside of these regions, the UK has the best results, being seventh from top, slightly above Ireland. Portugal is still

above the EU average, but below Spain. In descending order, belowaverage countries are France, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Slovakia, Hungary, Cyprus, Poland, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania at the bottom. Luckily, concerning the cost of broadband in Spain, the last five or 10 years have seen an upsurge in competition – once, one or at most two network providers held almost 100 percent of the market share, but this near-monopoly is now a thing of the past with companies constantly vying to be the best and an ever-increasing number to choose from. Complete packages, where a customer has broadband, landline, mobile phone and other features such as TV channels or portable wireless internet, can bring the cost of each individual service down considerably and include other perks – for example, free calls or text messages to national numbers or on the same network. Services are also improving: download limits are now likely to be double those of five years ago or even more, and a conscious effort is being made by many regional governments to roll out fibre-optic internet to as many towns as possible.

Mexican firm bidding to Mixed report for help build Trump’s wall Spain by OECD Puebla-based businessman says his country needs an outsider to combat corruption in politics and that his actions are not a betrayal. Theodore Atalla, the owner of a small industrial lighting company in the central Mexican city of Puebla, not only backs Donald Trump’s controversial plans to build a wall along the USMexican border, but has also asked to take part in its construction. Ecovelocity is the only company registered in Mexico among the more than 600 that have joined the bidding process for what has become a symbol of the US president’s election promises, and a humiliation for Mexico. Born in Egypt, Atalla previously lived in the United States and has been a resident in Mexico for the last 22 years. He has Egyptian and US nationality, and is applying for Mexican citizenship. He believes he will spend the rest of his life in Mexico, and sees nothing wrong in wanting to help build the wall, describing it is a way to “improve” Mexico. “I’m not betraying anybody. What’s more, we need to support each other here in Mexico,” he says. Atalla, who refused to be photographed, says he wants to provide the lighting for the wall on its southern side. “We are a Mexican

company, I doubt they will give us work on the other side,” he explains, adding that either way, he doesn’t believe his company stands much of a chance of winning the contract. “To tell the truth, I doubt it. I just signed up for the bidding process to see what would happen. The reality is that I don’t believe they will hire a Mexican company that imports lighting made in China and other countries,” he says. He founded Ecovelocity in 2013, a company specialising in industrial LED lighting, but says he stopped bidding for contracts issued by the Mexican government because he refused to become involved in corruption. Atalla believes Trump’s wall is a win-win for Mexico and the United States, and insists that Mexico will not pay for it, despite the US president’s insistence. But he does

think it likely that Trump will try to take advantage of trade. “It isn’t going to affect us at all. It will benefit both countries, it has to be built, there are a lot of problems here,” he says, adding that Mexico should build its own wall along its southern border, a project he would like to take part in: “We should build a wall there because we are seeing a lot of immigrants in Puebla who come here and commit robberies, they are criminals,” he says about undocumented Central Americans crossing into Mexico from Guatemala. The businessman says he is not offended by Trump’s incendiary comments, notably the president’s claims while on the campaign trail accusing Mexico of sending its rapists and criminals to the United States. He says he has seen prisoners being released from prisons along the border so that the United States can deal with them. What Mexico needs, says Atalla, is its own version of Trump, a political outsider who would take on the establishment: “I’m not attacking him, he is doing things for his country – I would like to have somebody like him to defend us from the rats that are in politics.”

A new report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development praises Spanish recovery but issues alert over rising poverty. The Spanish economy is growing at a good rate, yet poverty is on the rise due to a lack of quality jobs, according to the report by the OECD. “The Spanish economy is enjoying a robust recovery from a deep recession,” reads the opening line of the report, released recently. The latest OECD Economic Survey of Spain raises the growth forecast for this year from 2.3 percent to 2.5 percent. Yet the study also “recognises that the economic crisis has resulted in rising levels of poverty and income inequality.” The OECD advocates government policies that will make growth more inclusive, including better-quality jobs, higher productivity, improved vocational education, investment in innovative businesses, expanded social relief programs, and hikes to environmental and consumption tax. OECD Secretary-General Ángel Gurría and Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos presented the report in Madrid on Tuesday.

“Despite a challenging international environment, Spain offers living proof that reforms work,” said Gurría in his opening remarks. “The economy has grown at an average rate of 2.6 percent over the last three years, and in the last two years it grew by 3.2 percent.” Meanwhile, the public deficit dropped to 4.6 percent in 2016 according to OECD estimates, and will fall to 3.4 percent this year. Gurría quoted labour reforms, the European Central Bank’s monetary policy, low oil prices and fiscal consolidation measures for the improved outlook. For his part, De Guindos noted that Spanish output grew over 3 percent in 2015 and 2016, although he admitted that the economy “is still vulnerable.” Besides lavishing praise, the OECD report also sets Spain new targets: “Reforms. Reforms. Reforms.” “It is critical that the reform momentum be sustained, to surmount the many remaining challenges and ensure a gradual transition to a truly knowledge-based economy,” said Gurría. “The recovery also needs to be inclusive, addressing inequalities and providing opportunities and

improved well-being for all.” The OECD identifies priority areas for making growth more inclusive, including “further reductions in unemployment, better poverty reduction policies and improving the quality of jobs through better skills, training and job matching.” The report also provides recommendations to “make the tax mix more progressive and conducive to job creation, as well as to strengthen the role of the tax transfer system to better address inequalities.” The international organization makes a note of Spain’s notoriously high unemployment levels, especially among the young. “The unemployment rate is gradually falling thanks to stronger growth, but it remains very high, particularly among the young and long-term unemployed. About 40% of youths are unemployed, and many of them have low skills. The high share of long-term unemployed risks loss of skills, disaffection and alienation,” says the report. Additionally, “poverty and child poverty remain high and small and poorly targeted cash transfers do little to reduce poverty.”

Pride of Spain Awards 2017 Call for nominations He has no ambition

He is blackmailing her

My partner and I met at college, and quickly moved in together. My boyfriend however, has quit saying it was too much hard work, and amazingly he has taken a low paid job at a petrol station. I love him, but things aren’t the same as they used to be. When I talk to him about going back to college, he says he is happy at the petrol station, also recently taking the opportunity to cut his hours. He now sits at home most days playing computer games.

My sister had a relationship with a guy for 4 months. She was seeing him behind her husband’s back. She saw sense in the end and finished it, but now the guy is threatening her. Apparently he has incriminating photos, and he is asking for money. She is a Police Officer, and it could affect her career if it got out. She only confided in me recently and although I am very disappointed in her (she has children), I am the only one who knows, and is there for her. She is beside herself. She is an Officer of the Law, and there will be no end to the extortion if she pays this man money. When faced with a situation like this, it is better to bite the bullet and inform her superiors. This guy will not expect her to take this approach, and hopefully it may not go further. It may not be the only time this man has done such a thing, and she will be doing the right thing for all concerned.

It seems like your lives are moving in different directions. I think you now realise that the time has come for you both to have a serious conversation about your future together. You had dreams of you both being in successful, well paid careers and now he does not want that for himself. You are already starting to resent the situation, and it won’t get any better unless you talk. If he doesn’t want the same from life as you, it could be that your future together needs thinking about. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

Now in its eleventh year, the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards celebrates ordinary people who do extraordinary things, with nominees reflecting the core value of giving for the good of other people, and the community at large here on the Costa Blanca. Once you decide what category your nominee fits into

you can nominate someone - a family member, a colleague, a community member or even someone you respect and admire from afar - who you feel deserves recognition for what they do or have achieved. At the heart of the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards is Costa Blanca People boss, Claire Richards, who started the original concept and continues to drive the initiative with her hard work and commitment. Claire told us, “When we launched the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards in 2007, our aim was simple – to unearth and celebrate our unsung heroes the people who make this community great. It’s hard to believe that it’s eleven years later, and The Pride of Spain Awards have exceeded our wildest expectations. Each year, we continue to be overwhelmed by the stories of selfless

actions, courage, compassion and heroism. This is our chance to celebrate the fact that every day countless expat residents go out of their way to help their neighbours, often receiving little recognition for the extraordinary contributions they make to their communities. All of us know someone who deserves such recognition for their selfless actions. It might be your mum, your sibling, your cousin, your best friend, neighbour or school teacher. I urge you to take a few minutes and nominate them for a Pride of Spain Award in 2017. On behalf of everyone at the Costa Blanca People, I would like to thank our readers, sponsors, political and community leaders who lend their ongoing support to the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards.”

CLOSING DATE FOR NOMINATIONS IS JULY 28th 2017 Main sponsor

movie pick Terminator 2 Judgment Day 10.00pm ITV4 Linda Hamilton returns as Sarah Connor, now a single mother to rebellious teen John Connor (Edward Furlong), during the late nineties. Having been informed by a timetraveling soldier in the first film that John will one day grow up to become humanity’s savior from a computer-controlled Armageddon, Sarah has responded by becoming a muscle-bound she-warrior bent on educating John in survival tactics and battle strategies. Her ranting about humankind’s future has landed Sarah in an insane asylum and John in the foster care system. The rebellious John has responded to his situation by getting into scrapes with the law. When a new and improved Terminator android called the T-1000 (Robert Patrick) arrives from the future to eliminate John, an older model T-800 (Schwarzenegger) is sent to protect the boy. The T-1000, however, has the ability to morph itself into any shape it desires, allowing it chameleon-like powers and near indestructibility. The T-800 saves John’s life and helps break Sarah out of the institution.

movie PICK For centuries, an ancient truce has kept the naïve citizens of the human race safe from the horrors of the invisible realm but that’s all about to change, and fast. A ruthless leader has emerged in the invisible realm, a tyrant just as comfortable walking the surface realm as he is living in the land of fantasy. When this power-mad ruler defies his bloodline to assemble an unstoppable army of fantastical creatures that he will use to wage a supernatural war on humanity, it begins to appear that humankind’s days are numbered.

MOVIE picks The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel -A group Channel 4 - 9.00 pm of ageing Brits seduced by the prospect of spending their retirement in low-cost luxury at a plush Indian hotel they’ve seen in a brochure. Evelyn is a widow who’s been forced to downsize; Graham’s an old India hand who’s long yearned to return to the subcontinent. Douglas and his domineering wife Jean seem to be edging towards divorce; Muriel is a sour cockney who’s made the trip for medical reasons and hates being away from England and singletons Madge and Norman are looking for romance. But, arriving at The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in Jaipur, they discover that it is, in fact, a dump. However, as the characters acclimatise to their new surroundings and situation, they embark on adventures, aided by Sonny, the hotel’s upbeat young owner, which will reveal new sides to themselves.

‘Most wanted’ Brit arrested in Benidorm Benidorm Local Police have detained one of the ten ‘most wanted’ in the UK. The arrest of 25 year old Brian Gareth Edwards in the early hours of last Friday morning and he now faces three life sentences for violence, burglaries with intimidation and drug trafficking. He was spotted in Calle Mallorca, an area frequented by British tourists, according to police sources. The two policemen approached and asked for his papers as they remembered his face as one of the Crimestoppers most wanted and given his suspicious behaviour. Edwards anded over a passport, which apparently belonged to someone else, but the officers weren’t fooled. According to the same sources, the local policemen started questioning their suspect and his mumbling and evasiveness led to his detention and

he was taken to the Benidorm Police Station when he struggled and escaped, only to be caught close to a nearby swimming pool in the Trébol building. He was searched and found to be carrying three doses of cocaine, and a notebook showing a list of clients and also a piece of paper with a phone number and writting. The National Police established his identity the drug runner as 25 year old Brian Gareth Edwards, subject of a European arrest and deport warrant issued by the British judiciary ‘with a maximum term of three life sentences’. Edwards is considered to be very dangerous and was listed as ‘possibly armed’, he now faces the judicial procedure from the National Court for his extradition back to the UK to face charges.

PAY INEQUALITY

Spain’s female executives earn 16 percent less than their male counterparts. In Latvia, there are more women than men at the helm of companies. In Romania women executives earn practically the same amount as men. But these two countries are the exception: only one European manager out of three is female, and these women earn almost 25 percent less on average than men, according to data released recently by Eurostat, the European Union statistics agency, on the eve of International Women’s Day. Spain ranks relatively well in the survey, which is based on the reference year 2014. The percentage of women in managerial positions is 37 percent, two points above the EU average, for a total of slightly more than 76,000 female managers in a pool of around 208,000 executive positions in Spain. Spanish male managers earn 16.2 percent more than their female counterparts, against an EU average salary gap of 23.4 percent. In Romania, that earnings divide is just 5 percent while at the other end of the scale, male managers earn 33 percent more in Hungary and Italy. While there are more women than ever in the job market, both in Spain and in Europe as a whole, “there are still barriers

to gender equality,” notes the White Book on the future of the EU. In Spain, there are a few women in very prominent positions. Ana Patricia Botín presides over Spain’s largest bank, Santander, where she earned €9.9 million last year including salary and pension payments. But this is far from the norm: a study released in November 2015 by the Spanish Finance Ministry showed that the over-whelming majority of Spain’s highest earners are male. Although men only represent 54 percent of all salary earners, they take up 82 percent of positions where salaries are more than 10 times the minimum wage.

Facebook closes pirate streamed soccer matches Facebook has begun cracking down on user pages that illegally stream footage of major soccer championship matches to millions of viewers globally – a move that comes after the Verne section of Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that dozens of Spanish and Latin American Facebook pages are illegally broadcasting top-flight games free of charge using the social network’s Facebook Live video-sharing facility. The Capitanes del Fútbol page, which had more than a million followers, was

shut down recently, as were related profiles including Tío Capi, Capitanes TV, Capitanes TV 2 and El Capitano. Planeta Fútbol, with more than 700,000 followers, is also no longer available. As part of its crackdown, Facebook also blocked the pages of these sites administrators, many of whom managed various accounts with false names to get around the social media platform’s rules. “We can’t comment on specific cases of infraction of author’s rights but as our policy indicates, users are prohibited from

publishing content that infringes [on these rights] and we also deactivate accounts of repeat offenders as appropriate,” Facebook told El Pais. Facebook also noted that it had, in recent months, rolled out tools designed to prevent the illegal use of its Facebook Live service. Making use of Rights Manager, content owners can request that pirate streams be blocked. Spain’s La Liga soccer division has not confirmed whether it was behind the request to block the Capitanes del Fútbol

and Planeta Fútbol sites. Sites such as Capitanes del Fútbol, Planeta Fútbol – now both closed – and Fútbol Directo Honduras, among many others, get around Facebook’s rules by advertising pages that transmit games illegally and then provide links to them. These sites – mostly aimed at a Spanishspeaking public – create a network of intermediary profiles that redirect to other sites that have tapped into the broadcast and are illegally transmitting it. Once the game is over, the network of

Work underway at the municipal theatre At last it looks as though there could be an end in sight to the vacuum left by the closure of Torrevieja’s Teatro Municipal. Work has now begun to correct the problems that had been identified and ensure that the building finally has its opening licence. The work on the theatre began on 6th March and rectifying problems on the staircase was the first matter to be tackled. However, completion of the work should not take long with the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, estimating that only another couple of weeks will be needed to set other matters straight too. When this has been done the theatre can receive its certificate to show that building work is complete and it can receive its opening licence. It’s not just a case of building work needing attention. The theatre also has a few closets to clear as stage productions over the years have led to an accumulation of abandoned props

backstage. The mayor has pointed out that this is creating another potential fire hazard as well as preventing a room being used due to the clutter that’s there. Once this is cleared up and the building work is complete it looks as though at last the curtains will be raised again in this town centre theatre. Suzanne O’Connell

pages closes down; sometimes it is created for a single match. The sites then return to being seemingly innocuous pages dedicated to soccer news and gossip. Facebook launched its videostreaming service in late 2015. Over the course of 2016 it has boosted its live content, giving it priority over articles in the algorithm that decides what to show users. Technically, any smart phone connected to the internet can broadcast a video live.

WHAT ARE ORBS?

Most of you who are reading this article will have heard of Orbs. Some of you may have even caught a few on camera. However, very often, what looks like an orb on a camera (especially a mobile phone camera) are in fact, dust particles. Having a decent camera is the key to catching an orb on film as there is less likelihood of distortion of the picture once it has been developed. Very often, it's only when you download your film onto your PC that you will see Orbs which are very difficult, but not impossible, to see with the naked eye. One of the most incredible things I have seen is when I have taken photographs of people, and there is an Orb beside them or overhead with an unmistakable face in the middle of it! I have also seen video footage of someone who had a lot of spirit activity in their home. I was intrigued to visibly see 'flying' Orbs shooting upwards, and all around them. They are certainly a fascinating phenomenon and are something I have been interested in for years. But what defines an Orb? They are a solid or transparent ‘ball’ of energy or light caught on video, film, or more recently, by digital camera. Orbs are easy to see when photographs are developed by digital cameras and have been scientifically proven to often be caused by dust particles, and malfunctioning

camera diodes. However, Orbs are believed by many people to be life forms of those that once inhabited a physical body here on earth. Ghostly orbs are the most photographed

anomalies caught on film, especially by ghost hunters. They can be completely transparent or display themselves in colour. It is said that a culmination of orbs that appear on photographs taken outside on a wet night are most certainly going to be caused by moisture in the air from rain drops. But what about those that appear over the same people’s heads at differing times of their life, and in different venues? It also leaves a question mark over why orbs often appear in photographs of mediums when they

are ‘open’ to the spirit world and are also around the hands of healers when they are carrying out Reiki Treatments or Angel Healing. An example of reoccurring orbs around the same person is when I take photographs of one of my small granddaughters. As soon as she could sit up and we started taking photographs of her propped up in bed for example, there was always an orb over her head. I remember a few years ago when John and I took her to the Police children’s Christmas party. There were lots of children there having fun and running around. When Father Christmas came in they waited patiently for him to call their name. When he called Olivia’s name, she went up to him to collect her present so I saw an opportunity, and took a photograph of her. Although there were lots of other children around her, there it was again, just the one orb, over her head. It's definitely someone protecting her and I feel, her Spirit Guide. Everywhere she goes, the orb goes and the fact that we have confirmation of this in the photographs, it has been no surprise to me since that time when she now talks about family members who are now in Spirit. She talks about them in such a matter of fact way that I just love to listen and nod in recognition! ‐ I wonder who she takes after?! There are other theories concerning Orbs. On looking through differing sites whilst doing my research, some people believe that

orbs could be nature spirits or airborne protoplasm which you would find under a microscope, only far, far, more advanced. When I was Co‐Host on the TV show Rescue Mediums, there were more photograph's than I could count which were taken of us in the homes of the people who had rung the show to ask for help from our Producer. These people were at their whit's end with the unexplained activity that was going on in their home so it was no surprise that the majority of the ‘orb’ photographs appeared in what were deemed to be the most haunted rooms in the house. After we carried out our investigation and sent the Spirit(s) to the light, our Head of Research would take another photograph of us but this time there were no orbs to be seen. Do you believe in Orbs?

Quality of life good in Barcelona Barcelona has snuck into the top 50 ‘most liveable cities’ according to this year’s global quality of life survey, but Madrid has failed to make it for another year – although only just. The Spanish capital has moved up a notch from 52 to 51, and although Barcelona has dropped from its 39th position of last year, it is still comfortably within the list at number 42. Created every year by the HR consultancy company Mercer, the ‘quality of life’ study introduction says that ‘despite political and financial turbulence in Europe’, the highest number of ‘liveable’ cities in the world, are found on this continent. Vienna, Austria is where quality of life is best in the world, for the eighth year running and ahead of Zürich, Switzerland; Auckland, New Zealand; and Munich, Germany in fourth place. Along with Vancouver in Canada, Auckland is only the second non-European city to make it into the top 10 ‘most liveable’ list. Germany and Switzerland have the most cities where quality of life is among the 50 best in the world, with Düsseldorf and Frankfurt (Germany) and Geneva and Basel (Switzerland) also appearing in the top 10. The Danish capital, Copenhagen, completes the 10 ‘most liveable’. However, unlike Barcelona, none of the other cities in Europe has a beach. London is just two places ahead of Barcelona and Milan, Italy also pips the Catalunya capital at the post, but Barcelona just beats Lisbon, Portugal and is two places ahead of New York, USA. The Japanese city of Kobe completes the top 50. Outside of Europe, the top city in Asia Continued on page 57

Cancer breakthrough A groundbreaking gene therapy treatment which boosts a patient's own immune cells has been shown to clear disease from one third of terminal patients with blood cancer. US pharmaceutical company Kite Pharma released results from the first six months of its trial of the new treatment, called CAR-T cell therapy. Some 36 percent of the 101 patients on the trial were still in complete remission at six months, and eight in 10 saw their cancer shrink by at least half during the study. “The numbers are fantastic,” said Dr Fred Locke, a blood cancer expert at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa who co-led the study. “These are heavily treated patients who have no other options.” The treatment, which has been dubbed ‘a living drug’ by doctors, works by filtering a patient’s blood to remove key immune system cells called T-cells, which are then genetically engineered in the lab to recognise cancer cells. Cancer cells are very good a evading the immune system, but the new therapy essentially cuts the brakes, allowing immune cells to do their job properly. Martin Ledwick, Cancer Research UK’ s head cancer information nurse, said: “These results are promising and suggest that one day CAR-T cells could become a treatment option for some patients with

certain types of lymphoma. “But, we need to know more about the side effects of the treatment and long term benefits.” Patients in the study had one of three types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a blood cancer which affects 13,600 patients in Britain, and had failed all other treatments. Most patients with such an advanced condition only live for six

months but half of the trial group are still alive nine months since the trial began, and a third may be cured. Dimas Padilla, 43, of Orlando, who was warned his case was worsening after chemotherapy had stopped working, is now in complete remission after undergoing the therapy last August. After learning his cancer was probably terminal he said: “I was thinking how am I going to tell this to my mother, my wife, my children,” he said. After CAR-T therapy he saw his tumours ‘shrink like ice cubes’ and is now in complete remission. “They were able to

save my life,” Mr Padilla added. However there are still concerns that the treatment has significant side effects, and can even kill some patients, as it puts the immune system into a state of overdrive. During the trial two people died from the therapy, rather than their cancer. Of the study participants, 13 per cent developed a dangerous condition where the immune system overreacts in fighting the cancer, and roughly a third of patients developed anaemia or other blood-count-related problems. Nearly one third also reported neurological problems such as sleepiness, confusion, tremor or difficulty speaking, but these typically lasted just a few days. The scans show how cancer has disappeared after just three months, and the remission has continued. Full results will be presented at the American Association for Cancer Research conference in April and the company plans to seek approval from European regulators later this year. “It's a safe treatment, certainly a lot safer than having progressive lymphoma,” said the cancer institute's Dr Steven Rosenberg, Other companies, such as Juno Therapeutics, have had to halt trials into CAR-T treatments following patient deaths.

is Singapore, at number 25, and in Latin America, the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo is the highest-placed at 79. The study covered 231 cities on every continent, measuring factors such as infrastructure, electricity, on-tap drinking water, transport facilities such as trains, roads and airports, among other, social and environmental aspects. Barcelona and Madrid both made it into the top 50 for infrastructure – jointly at number 34 – thanks to their excellent road and rail system and the ease of reaching their international airports, which are the only two hubs in Spain for practically any long-haul destination. Singapore was best for infrastructure, ahead of Munich and Frankfurt, even though reaching the latter from the airport involves a half-hour train journey making it difficult to explore during a connecting flight overlay.

William from Algorfa asks; Hi Aunty. I somehow installed an app called TurboYourPC as it reported I had 300 errors and it would fix them. At the time my laptop was running painfully slowly so I thought what the hell. Since I installed it I cannot open any of my apps and when I can get on the internet it is so slow and I get adverts popping up every minute, I want to throw the thing in the bin. Any advice on how to get rid of it? Aunty Says; Hello William. This is one of many apps that offer to sort out computer problems but invariably make things worse by loading loads of junk and advertising malware onto your computer. TurboYourPC is particularly sneaky and it seems to have a pretty nasty payload that will cause exactly these kind of problems. You may be lucky and successfully remove it via “programs and features” and then do a full scan with an updated Malwarebytes and your chosen antivirus program. Peter via email asks: Hello Aunty, I have a HP DV7 laptop that I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 which has worked fine except that when I connect to my TV using the HDMI lead, the laptop screen shrinks to half the normal size and the TV picture is missing a large part on the left side. Also the sound only comes from the laptop speakers and not through my TV. I know it’s not the laptop as everything was working before I upgraded from Windows 7. It is an official Windows 10 which I bought from Amazon UK. Aunty Says: Hi Peter. This is most likely to do

with the driver software for your graphics card. Go to the hp.co.uk website and the “support” and “Software and Drivers” section where you can enter the model of your laptop and download the latest Windows 10 drivers for your graphics card. Once installed connect everything up and run the “wizard” that should auto detect everything and help set things up. Sometimes it helps to switch everything off, connect all the cables and just switch the TV on and set it to the HDMI channel. When you start your laptop it should auto detect that you have your TV connected and configure everything for you. June via email asks: Hi Aunty, I have an all-in-one desktop with a touch screen but the screen is constantly covered in fingerprints and I was told they are delicate and there are some “must nots” when it comes to keeping them clean. What is the best thing for doing this? Aunty Says; Hello June. Touch screens are not particularly delicate as they have been designed and tested to handle all sorts of poking with sticky and greasy fingers. I use the cheap microfiber cloths from Mercadona which I slightly dampen with a mix of bottled water and a couple of drops of white vinegar. You can also add a few drops surgical alcohol onto the cloth to help sterilize the screen as you can never be sure where those fingers have been. That’s all for another week, email questions to you auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.
