Budget moving forward at last Approval of the 2018 budget in Torrevieja looks to be just a little closer to happening at last. The budget has been on hold due to the failure of the opposition and current council to agree on what it should contain. Without a clear majority, the current ruling government initially failed to attract the support of the two additional parties, Sueña and Ciudadanos. They needed this support to pass any of the projects. The PP, who hold 11 of the 25 councillors would not be in agreement on principle. The failure to reach agreement and the constant blocking of the budget by the opposition has meant that a number of proposed projects have been unable to go ahead. Now, at last the Sueña and Ciudadanos parties have come out in support. The budget could be implemented from February and was agreed by the four parties who currently govern: Los Verdes, PSOE, APTCe and IU and the opposition parties of Sueña Torrevieja and Ciudadanos. The proposals were rejected by the PP. This means that in total 13 councillors

voted for the budget and 11 against which just gives the majority needed to take the budget forward to another vote next month. If it is passed then, the plans for the future funding of the town can go ahead. Pablo Samper for Sueña Torrevieja, points out, however, that their support is to enable actions to go ahead and is not a blank cheque for continued and uncritical approval. There have been a number of hold ups to the budget including the disagreements over the refuse contract. The current budget statement has been put together by the councillor, José Hurtado and comes to 90.6 million altogether. The council has lost five million due to the reduction in the council tax, IBI. Part of the budget is being set aside to try and reduce the amount that the town owes to the banks. A million euros has been set aside for repair and improvements to the sports city and other works such as lighting improvements and park conservation. However, the PP are still vocal in opposing the budget. They claim that it is

not the budget that Torrevieja needs and that, in fact, they have not amended the budget to include the changes requested by the Sueña and Ciudadanos parties. However, these parties claim that their support is being provided in order to enable the town council to manage the town and to unlock the paralysis that there has been. Suzanne O’Connell

Winners of Torrevieja’s window dressing competition

Diana Quer’s body found

After careful consideration by the judges, three winners were chosen of the competition to set up the most creative shop window for Christmas. First prize of €650 went to Lío y Lía, children’s clothes shop. The second prize of €400 went to the display created by Lilibit Todo para el Bebe. The third prize of €250 went to Optica Chantal. This is the 14th time the competition has taken place and this year there were 15 entrants. The councillor for business,

If you have been following the Spanish news then you will know that in August 2016 a young 18 year-old woman called Diana Quer (below) disappeared and no sign of her had been seen since. This disappearance has caused lots of controversy due to the unusual and strained relationships between members of the family. Now a 41 year old man, José Enrique Abuín or ‘El Chicle’ or ‘Chewing gum’ has confessed to the murder of Diana and dumping her body in the well of a factory in Rianxo. He claims that he did this on his own after he had run over the young woman whose family live in a suburb of Madrid. The Guardia Civil found the body of Diana after the confession by El Chicle on New Year’s Eve. His wife, who was also arrested, has now been freed having retracted the alibi that she gave him for the night of Diana’s disappearance. José accompanied the police to where he claimed to have left the body and now located, the mystery surrounding her unusual disappearance would appear to be tragically solved. DNA tests confirm that El Chicle acted alone in kidnapping Diana, tying her up and then throwing her into the well. The factory itself has been abandoned for five years but was previously a soft drinks

Manuela Osuna, explained that the judges visited each of the shops and that it wasn’t an easy to decision to make. Creating an eye-catching display, however, both brings in business and adds to the general atmosphere in the town. The department of commerce would like to thank those taking part and congratulates all participants for the effort they made this year. Suzanne O’Connell Lío y Lía’s display

factory and was then used for selling furniture. It’s also a popular area used by drug traffickers and young people with little to do. A problem that neighbours had reported frequently. The confession from El Chicle came after he was arrested for the attempted kidnap and intimidation of another woman. He has always been one of the suspects due to his record of sexual violence and his location had also been established as close to Diana on the night of her disappearance. The body was found to be in an advanced state of decomposition after having been in the well for 500

days. It has been taken away and there will be an autopsy to establish exactly how Diana died. It is currently believed that she was handcuffed and strangled on 22nd August. The accused has claimed that he knocked her down in his car. However, the autopsy will determine whether this was the case and whether she was sexually assaulted or raped. The suspect’s Alfa Romeo car has also been seized from his home. This is believed to be the car he would have used at the time of the abduction. The industrial unit is some five kilometres from the Taragoña river where her mobile, iphone 6 was found on 27th October and three kilometres from where El Chicle lived. Diana originally went missing after the fiestas of A Pobra do Caramiñal in A Coruña, where the well-off family had a holiday home. Diana is known to have made friends with local people who lived there. One of whom was El Chicle and was one of those questioned following her disappearance. The case attracted even more interest due to the fact that Diana had run away previously and there was a history of arguments in the household. There were some who believed that Diana had left of her own free will after arguing with her mother and sister. The mother eventually lost custody also of the younger daughter, Valeria. BITE SIZE The three kings are coming NEWS: A thousand square metres of reeds and salt marsh was affected adjacent to the salt lake and close to nearby houses and a local bar. The flames were spotted at around 8pm next to Águilas street. It isn’t the first time that this area has been set on fire and with homes in close proximity, neighbours were once more alerted to the risk. The urbanisation Lagosol in Torreta III is at the edge of the lake and residents of the homes closest to it were forced to evacuate due to the thick smoke created and proximity of the flames. Four fire fighting vehicles were brought to the scene to extinguish the fire. A special fire fighting team, experienced in fighting forest fires, were also sent out to check that the fire would not reignite. Medical assistance was brought to the area but wasn’t needed in the end. This is the third time in five years that fire has broken out in this area. The cause of the fire is not yet confirmed but arson is suspected.

This year the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos (The kings’ procession) will leave from the port at 5.30pm. The usual route is then by the Dique de Levante up to the Hombre del Mar monument. From there they go up calle Ramón y Cajal, calle Zoa and calle Ramón Gallud. The procession ends in front of the Inmaculada Concepción church in the main square of the town. Fire in Torrevieja’s laguna

If you are new to Spain at Christmas you might be surprised by the length of time that the Christmas celebrations appear to continue. This is because the festive season is not yet over until the three kings have visited on 5th January. The arrival of the kings is a very important part of the celebrations, particularly for children, who have traditionally received their presents at this time. Over the years, more and more Spanish people have adopted Father Christmas too. In some cases, meaning that there are two opportunities for Spanish children to receive their presents. However, there is something logical about

Foreigners buying more homes in Spain than ever before Foreigners are buying more homes in Spain than ever before, but the trend is not on the up amongst all nationalities. Although the British are still the foreign nationals that buy most houses in Spain's cities and along its coastline, they are buying less than before.... Brexit is beginning to be felt. According to data from the notaries the sale of property to foreigners increased by 13.4 percent in the first half of the year, compared with the same period last year. Between January and July, foreigners bought 50,087 homes and according to the General Notary Council, and their purchases accounted for 19.4 percent of the total of all real estate transactions over this period, compared with 20.3 percent in the first six months of 2016, although it had been increasing steadily since 2007, the start of the recession. Britons are still the foreigners who buy most property in Spain (13.9 percent of all the purchases in the first half of the year), but they bought 16.4 percent fewer houses compared with last year's figures, suggesting that Brexit is beginning to bite. The next most populous group of buyers are the French (8.8 percent), followed by the Germans (8.2 percent), Italians (7.7 percent), Rumanians (6.9 percent) and Belgians (6.2 percent). Other noticeable nations getting on the housing ladder in Spain are Morrocans (5.7 percent), Chinese (4.7 percent) or Russians (3.0 percent). House purchased made by citizens from outside the European Union accounted for 10.6 percent between January and July this year. All the autonomous communities recorded increases in the number of house purchases being made by foreigners and only five of them showed increases below the national average (+13.4 percent): Balearic

Islands (+5.3 percent), Andalucía (+5.4 percent), Murcia (+5.7 percent), Canary Islands (+10.1 percent) and the Valencian Community (+12 percent). All the remaining regions recorded increases above the national average, with intermediate rises in Extremadura, Catalonia, Aragón, Madrid and the areas along the Cantabrian coast. The greatest rises in house purchases by foreigners were seen in Castilla-La Mancha (+33.2 percent), Castilla y León (+39 percent), Navarra (+43.8 percent) and La Rioja (+74.8 percent). During the first six months of the year, house purchases by foreigners were concentrated primarily along the Mediterranean coast and on the islands, with the greatest number of purchases being recorded in Andalusia (19.4 percent), Murcia (26.9 percent), the Valencian Community (35.5 percent), Balearic Islands (37.7 percent) and Canary Islands 42.3 percent). In contrast, fewer than 10 percent of house purchases in Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon and along the Cantabrian coast were made by foreigners.

BITE SIZE NEWS: San Luis neighbourhood Continued from page 3

The work was begun by the Ministry of Development last June and was completed a few weeks ago. It is hoped that the new measures will prevent this level of flooding in the future. Some other areas have also received additional funding to prevent road closures including San Pedro del Pinatar and Orihuela Costa.

Watch out for jellyfish Towards the end of December a number of fluorescent jellyfish were spotted on the beaches of Torrevieja. The jellyfish is Pelagia noctiluca which has a violet colour and is more commonly known as the luminous jellyfish. It is very common in the Mediterranean sea and people should be careful to avoid standing on them if they are washed up on the beach. Contact with their tentacles and mouth can lead to nasty stings. They are usually found in deep water but come closer to shore when they are ready to breed. Their unusual appearance on the local beaches has been put down to storms and the strong marine currents which they are unable to escape. The fluorescent appearance of the jellyfish is used as a deterrent when it is in danger and for visibility in the depth of the sea where it is totally dark.

Swimming pool to get warmer Councillor Victor Ferrández made an announcement on 21st December that the heating at the indoor swimming pool in the town’s sports centre was due to go up a notch. The announcement was made at a meeting with the local swimming clubs. The pool has been operating at the required temperature of between 24 and 28 degrees during November and December. The heat was not initially increased in order to ensure that everything was working together correctly first. Now that all seems to be functioning well the heating will be turned up to 28 degrees to ensure the comfort of those using it. It is likely that this temperature will be maintained during January and February as these are the coldest months of the year in Torervieja. In some circumstances the heat of the water can be increased to 30 when it is used by old people and children. It may come as a surprise to know that it is a Valencian law that dictates specifically what the temperature must be.

Four injured in accident A traffic accident involving two cars left four injured at 7.30am on 30th December. The accident took place on the N332 and the cause of the accident was not clear. watch puts its plans into place Now into 2018, the San Luis/ La Siesta neighbourhood watch is looking forward to a fruitful new year. Its new president, Doug Allen has already made changes to the way in which the group operates and is keen to keep the momentum going. The group is an active opportunity to keep in touch with the local town hall through its representative, Carlos, and the police officer Paulino who has also been attending meetings. Following the latest meeting it was agreed that there should be a more active role by local people and officials in tackling the problem of the illegal dumping of waste. The council will take a more active role in monitoring waste dumping and leaflets in different languages will be given to drivers who are caught. The leaflets will warn them of the illegal nature of what they are doing and the possible police action that can be taken. The council budget in Torrevieja is currently still being debated. Once it is agreed then money can be released to install warning signs in green skip areas to deter illegal dumping. It is also intended to place large stickers on all waste bins to draw the public’s attention to the free

collection services that exist. Some guilty businesses, including food and packaging, have already been identified and they will be visited by the police at their premises and warned of the potential penalties if they continue to dump their waste illegally. There will be greater opportunity for vigilance locally as the old police office adjacent to Age Concern is to be opened again. Although it will not be permanently manned, it will enable better contact with the local police on the urbanisation. The neighbourhood watch group are creating their own report format to enable people to record their concerns more easily. The next meeting of the group is on January 29that Casa Ventura at 4.30pm. For each meeting Doug intends that there is a particular theme and that the responsible councillor or officer is asked to attend. Anyone who lives in the area is welcome to the meeting and can join the group. They have an active Facebook page and those interested are encouraged to like it and keep up-to-date with the latest information. Suzanne O’Connell

Beach satisfaction up The city councillor for beaches, Luisa Boné, and the city councillor for tourism, Sofía Álvarez, have released results of the latest Beach Satisfaction Survey, which was carried out in the summer season from June to September 2017 and which shows an increase of up to nine points in the level of satisfaction of the surveyed users compared to the previous year's data. Boné was keen to point out that "the Spanish tourists have been evaluating our

Regarding tourism, Alvarez pointed out that 73% of the beach visitors have chosen Orihuela Costa for their sun and beach conditions, 55% for shopping, 42% for its gastronomy, 38% for golf and 30% for the hotel accommodations. Among recommendations for improvements proposed by both tourists and residents who participated in the beach surveys, the following points are

beaches satisfactorily for the first time since the implementation of these studies, as the tendency so far has been that more foreign tourists have rated this". According to this study, the beaches Punta Prima and Mil Palmeras received the best ratings. The best rated services were the information service provided on the notice boards, the service of signal flags, the rescue service and the police surveillance on the beaches. In these areas, all beaches have

being noted by officials: the improvement of general cleanliness, in particular the beach walkways and the sand; a larger number of playgrounds; water and leisure activities, such as Zumba classes; improving accessibility and support for disabled persons on the beaches. These proposals are already being processed by the two city councillors in order to implement them where possible next year.

Clamping down on BITE SIZE NEWS: drink and drugs whilst driving Continued from page 5

During the week the 11th December to 17th December the local police in Torrevieja conducted a campaign to catch people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A number of control points were established across the town which slowed down the flow of traffic but remained an important attempt to catch those who risk their lives and those of others. Altogether 48 tests for alcohol were done and 45 for drugs. The drug testing equipment has only recently been acquired by the Guardia Civil. It presents a good opportunity to ensure that the use of drugs whilst driving can be effectively identified. Five drivers were found to be under the influence of an illegal substance and four were driving having been drinking. Most of the tests were done on the afternoon of the 15th December and included 10 police officers, four of whom were from the GRO. There were three

Police stop drivers on the roundabout

check points, the first at the roundabout by the local police station, and the second in the avenue Gregorio Marañon opposite the Cepsa petrol station. The third control point was at the exit from the Dique de Levante near the Hombre del Mar. On the 15th December of the 23 drivers who were tested, none proved positive for alcohol but the presence of drugs was detected in five of them. Cocaine, amphetamines and cannabis were amongst the drugsidentified. All the drivers were reported and one car was also fined for not having an up-to-date ITV (MOT) certificate. The alcohol tests consist of measuring the level of alcohol in the breath and the drug test uses saliva to indicate whether drugs have been taken or not. The presence of alcohol or drugs is the main reason why accidents take place and this campaign to spot drivers who break the law will continue. Suzanne O’Connell

treated a woman of 38 for chest pain, a 38 year old man with bruises, a 25 year old man with cuts to one leg and a young man of 23 with multiple injuries to his face, neck and chest. The four were transferred to Torrevieja hospital.

Torrevieja sales down According to recent figures that have been released the number of properties exchanging hands in Torrevieja has fallen by 10.5% since 2016. From January to September 2017 the sale of houses was recorded at 3,601, which placed the town second in the area’s league table of house sales. In first place was Alicante which has seen an increase of 26.2% to 4,243 properties. Third is Orihuela whose share of the market has increased by 12.9% and where 3,625 properties were transferred. This is the first time that Alicante has risen above Torrevieja to take first place according to the Ministry of Development. Although showing a downturn for Torrevieja, the rise of Alicante is being put down to local demand for first residencies and the popularity of Playa de San Juan. Much of the housing sold is resale as areas such as Torrevieja, have few new areas of land on which to build, a situation which has seen a fall in construction. Promoters looking for new areas to build are moving towards Alicante and towns in the north of the province. Suzanne O’Connell

Flu epidemic in Alicante Hospitals in the province of Alicante are struggling to cope with the flu epidemic that has currently gripped the area. The problem is being made worse by the bug spreading during the festive season when emergency services and health centres have less staff available. The statistics suggest that there are currently 327 cases of the flu for every 100,000 inhabitants. This has risen dramatically from the usual 29 cases of flu per 100,000. The problem is so acute that contingency plans are being put into action to deal with it. There has also been a change in trend of the way in which the illness has spread across the province. Usually it is the north that suffers first, but this year parts of south Alicante were the first to be struck down. Alicante General hospital, on Wednesday alone, attended to more than 400 people in emergency. Of these a significant number were of people suffering from respiratory problems and the flu. The concern is mounting that emergency services will simply not be able to cope if this situation continues during the rest of the festive period. Most of the people who are coming in for treatment are elderly who already have other illnesses or health difficulties. However, the hospitals are quick

to add that in spite of the situation they are coping at present and beds are available. However, if you do consider attending the emergency section of your hospital with a case of flu be aware that you will be required to wait when there are other, more serious emergencies. However, with health centres only partially open in the afternoons people turn increasingly to the hospitals to deal with their health problems. In some places you will need to wait six days in order to see your family doctor at this time of year. The weekends and Mondays are the worst days for seeking attention and all services, including operations, are experiencing reduced personnel. Where operations are not essential these are placed back into the new year. The health services remind people that they should only use the emergency part of the hospital when it is urgent. The health centres are open as normal in the morning and will accept emergencies in the afternoon too. Only as a last resort should the emergency wing of the hospital be used. However, with lengthening queues and difficulties getting attention it is understandable why people rush to their local hospital to get the attention they need. Suzanne O’Connell

Who will Mobile App for bullying pay the and violence victims fine? On the 24th October, a traffic warden in Alicante handed out a ticket to the town hall of Torrevieja’s official car. The fine of €80 will be reduced by half if it is paid within the required time. However, the fact remains that the car driver should have obtained a ticket prior to parking in this designated blue zone. The car was parked on calle Tucumán and the driver wasn’t present at the time when the car was spotted. The fine, applied by the town hall in Alicante, has been sent to Torrevieja where there are now two options. They can pay the fine outright or seek out the person who had been driving at the time. The coalition government in Torrevieja has chosen to use as their official car an old Audi 6 which has already got 350,000 kilometres on the clock. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, has insisted that a record be kept of it use and so information will be available about the actual driver at the time. On the day when the fine was applied, a document was delivered by hand to the Alicante government. Something which is usually done by two civil servants (funcionarios) at the town hall. It is usual in these cases for the driver of the car to remain in it whilst the document is delivered to avoid being fined. However, this was not the case and now it looks as though one of the two civil servants will be required to pay up. Suzanne O’Connell

An end to the warm winter? We have been enjoying unseasonably warm temperatures over the Christmas period with temperatures reaching as high as 22 degrees. While winter tourists are delighted with the opportunity to enjoy the beach, the mild weather is due to come to an abrupt stop as the Three Kings arrive later this week. Reports indicate that temperatures will change dramatically on Friday when a very cold polar air mass is due to arrive. What’s

more, the fold front will bring about rain throughout the province which is

expected to continue until Sunday. Director of the Institute of Climatology at the University of Alicante, Jorge Olcina confirmed that temperatures will begin to drop on January 5th and rain will begin that night, although in moderate amounts. Olcina commented that since last Friday, the Alicante province has registered above normal temperatures for this time of year due to a mass of subtropical maritime air. Despite the unusual springtime feeling, Olcina pointed out that there are records of these sorts of temperatures on the first days of the New Year in recent years. For example, in 2016 and 2015, highs of 23.4 degrees were recorded.

Children and teenagers suffering bullying or violence can get help via a free, anonymous mobile phone App funded by La Caixa bank's charitable foundation and health authorities. They can talk online with counsellors and, if they are in a situation of immediate risk, send out an alert. Psychologists who detect a risk for the child can also notify authorities to get help for the victim. The App is created by the Help for Children and Teenagers at Risk Foundation (ANAR) and carries the same name. At present, it is only available for use between 4.00pm and midnight – although seven days a week all year round – until enough counsellors and other resources can be employed to run it 24 hours a day.

With immediate effect, young people being abused, suffering violence or going through bullying at home, school or anywhere else, either physical or psychological, can chat online via the website anar.org, and the App will be available in the next few weeks for iOS and Android phones. It includes an online game and guides covering the most common problems consulted on the ANAR telephone helpline. Currently, the App icon is just the ANAR logo with no other text or features, to protect children in risky situations if those attacking them are likely to check their mobiles. The chat box is set up to wipe out the conversation after the third line, for the same reason.

The bells rang out in Campoverde On the evening of December 20th over 200 people gathered on the terrace of the Rusty Nail to sing carols and celebrate Christmas. The event was organised by the Campoverde Church along with the Rusty Nail for the whole of the village. This year it turned out to be the biggest and best year ever with local children acting out the nativity scene and Father Richard blessing the Campoverde Memory Tree. Particularly memorable during the evening was the singing of the Twelve Days of Christmas with everyone joining in with the actions. The Twelve Days of Christmas is actually a coded song from the 16th century to help persecuted Christians learn and practise their faith. Following the carol singing everyone enjoyed the mince pies and mulled wine supplied by the Rusty Nail. ‘It’s so easy to get caught up in the commerciality of Christmas,’ explained Maggie Dew from Campoverde Church. ‘You can forget what it is that we are actually celebrating. We are celebrating the

greatest gift of all time, when God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world as a human to provide us with a way back to him. As Christians we want to share in the good news of this most amazing gift. This year we put up a sign in the church garden to remind everyone passing that Mary wrapped the first Christmas present to us and laid him in a manger.’ To find out more about Campoverde Church and their activities and services you can visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/campoverdechurch or you can email maggieruthdew@hotmail.com. No banks or cashpoints in half of Spanish towns Around 50 percent of Spain's towns and villages do not have a single bank branch or cashpoint, according to a report by the Independent Force Employment Federation (FINE), the largest financial services union in Spain. In its report Post-crisis employment in Spanish banks, FINE debunks claims that an increasing number of customers

using online banking justifies the number of job cuts in the sector since 2008. The paper shows data from public registries between that year and 2016 inclusive, as well as figures from the European Central Bank (BCE). It explains that in 2008, Spain's financial and banking industry was 'the

second least-competitive' among the main European Union countries, and by 2016 was the least competitive. “The worsening seen in the last eight years, by 89 percent according to our competition index, is double that of other EU countries – some of which, like France, have not only got no worse, but have actually improved,” the report says. “This is a sound argument to refute claims by those who believe centralising and concentrating bank branches in Spain is something that should continue.” In 2008, the report explains, the banking industry was focusing mainly on sustainability, especially in savings banks or Cajas de Ahorro, and that they aimed to be as accessible as possible to customers. Savings banks ploughed over €2 billion back into society through their corporate social responsibility schemes, but in the run-up to the financial crisis they 'went back 35 years' to focus mainly on earning a profit and 'society and employees became a secondary concern'. The paper claims working hours increased, but pay did not, leading to rising absenteeism, strained working relations and mass redundancies, with over 84,000 banking staff losing their jobs in eight

years. The 'legal terms and lawyers relationship' between employees and the banks they worked for then began to reach the customers, according to the study, which analyses the role of the construction industry collapse in the financial crisis, since mass building created 30,000, but its decline destroyed 85,000, because of the knock-on effect. This included 8,000 jobs being created in banking and 17,500 being lost. Recovery has come about through increased productivity, but this has come at the cost of 'longer working days with lower wages', 'business pressure', 'fear of being fired', and ultimately, absenteeism because 'people break down as a result'. At present, according to the research, a total of 4.35 per 1,000 inhabitants were working in the financial services sector as at the end of 2015 in Spain, compared

with 5.88 per 1,000 in Europe. The reduction in banking employees and branch closure 'cannot be justified or explained' by the rise in internet banking, since it is not widespread enough to account for so many shutdowns and redundancies, the report claims. As a result of these branch closures, 50 percent of municipalities in Spain, especially small villages and in rural areas, have no banking services whatsoever, not even a cashpoint machine. Card payments are still not widely enough accepted for customers to live cash-free – although Spain's fourth political party Ciudadanos wants to make it compulsory for all businesses to accept card payments for goods and services of €10 or more. Many banks still require customers to visit in person to carry out certain transactions, rather than allowing them to do so online. And in some of the more remote parts of Spain, internet access is not even available as it is not economically viable for telecoms companies. Aragón is a region with this problem, as 80 percent of its population lives in villages of fewer than 100 inhabitants, but has addressed the matter with a planned internet roll-out that will get everyone online by 2020.

Islands and enclaves seek bigger mainland flight discounts Air passengers and governments in Spain's non-mainland outposts are calling for a 75 per cent reduction on flights and 100 per cent cuts in airport taxes, which they say are 'perfectly affordable' for the government. At present, residents in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands and the two Spanish-owned city-provinces of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern Moroccan coast are entitled to a 50 per cent discount on flights to and from the mainland, since generally, they have to reach continental Spain for onward international travel and, in some cases, have to fly there for business or personal reasons. But regional governments in these four areas are calling for the flight reductions to increase to 75 per cent. This would cost the government around €130 million per year in total, compared with around €87m at present. They also want all airport taxes on flights linking the mainland and islands or African continental enclaves to be axed, which would involve a further €71m price tag. However, the Canary Island regional minister for transport and public works, Pablo Rodríguez, said much of it could be offset by small increases on flight tickets across the board, both for mainland residents travelling to other parts of continental Spain and for those who have to cross a sea to get there. Along with the Balearic Island regional minister for land, energy and mobility, Marc Pons, plus the regional minister and vice-minister for public

works in Ceuta and Melilla respectively, Néstor García and Javier Mateu, have called for a meeting with their national government counterpart Íñigo de la Serna to put forward their proposals. All four represent different parties –

the ministers from Ceuta and Melilla are on the right-wing PP, which is in national government, whilst Pons and Rodríguez are members of the Socialists (PSOE) and Canarian Coalition respectively. They intend to set up an 'extracontinental regions committee' to work together on the specific needs of nonmainland areas of Spain, and their first formal meeting will be in Melilla in the first or second quarter of 2018. According to Pons, who will host the first summit – which he calls 'unprecedented' – Spaniards and residents in non-mainland regions 'share transport problems' which their governments want to tackle collectively 'putting aside political values'. “Our requests are not any kind of privilege – they're about fairness,” he stresses. Rodríguez says he gets the impression that the central government is likely to view their ideas 'positively'. According to research by the Canary Island government, the 75 per cent islands-and-enclaves resident flight discount and the axing of airport taxes for flights to and from the mainland would account for between 25 per cent and 66 per cent of the cost of a ticket, but would discourage airlines from increasing their own prices in an attempt to gain State subsidies, meaning that in the long run the actual costs to the government would be marginal.

THEFT OF DANGEROUS DOGS FROM ANIMAL SHELTER On 20th December the animal shelter in Torrevieja was broken into and four dogs were taken. One of those stolen was an American Staffordshire Terrier and so should be registered on the dangerous dogs list. Two of the stolen dogs were picked up again shortly afterwards in the streets but the other two have not been located. The theft took place on Wednesday night at a time when the shelter isn’t staffed. According to councillor Carmen Morate, the thieves broke into the shelter and

done on them as well as being certified fit to own such a dog. CCTV is being examined to see if it can be established exactly what happened. It isn’t the first time that something like this has occurred. On occasions owners have also tried to retrieve their dogs by breaking in to avoid payingfor them to bemicrochipped. The animal shelter is suffering from a lack of personnel which means that the councillor or Local Police are called on during the weekend to pick up

forced open some of the cages. In one of these cages there was a dog classed as dangerous which had been picked up on Sunday afternoon in the Acequión area. The dog had actually been taken in by the councillor herself as there are no staff in the animal shelter over the weekend. Owners of dangerous dogs must fulfil certain requirements and such a dog will not be allowed out of the shelter unless staff are sure that these requirements have been met. It is believed that the owner of the dog, which was microchipped but not registered on the dangerous dogs list, had come to take possession of it knowing that the dog would not be released by officials. Dangerous dog owners must have a police check

animals that are reported. The town has a policy that means that no animal will be put down unless it is irretrievably ill. This means that it is a costly business to maintain the shelter, particularly as they provide possible adopters with some certification and services for free. The microchip, however, is one of the expenses that the town hall charges people along with the €26 where an animal has been caught on a public road. Owners are also charged €6.50 for every night that the animal is kept in the shelter. The cost of any vaccinations that the animal needs and veterinary attention is also required from owners claiming their animals. Suzanne O’Connell

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE A relatively good year for the euro can also be attributed to factors outside of Europe It has been an interesting but largely positive year for the euro. Despite the potential for upset, with big question marks around the future of the European Union (EU) following the vote for Brexit in 2016, the common European currency fared relatively well. A week short of the end of 2017 and it is up over the year against its key peers, the pound and the dollar, having hit a high against both currencies towards the end of the summer. In late August the euro rose to a value of almost €0.93 to £1, leading to much speculation about the possibility of it reaching what is known as ‘parity’ (where €1 is equal to £1). In early September it peaked at US$1.20, and while this is some way off its 5-year high against the US dollar back in April 2014 (when it almost touched $1.40), the euro’s upwards trajectory was far more consistent than it was against the pound - reflecting a broadly positive trend. Policy – both fiscal and political - played a key role in the movements between the euro and the dollar. In the US, the long-awaited interest rate rise eventually happened, although in reflection this did little to appease the markets which spent the year watching on as the new Trump administration struggled to push through major reforms. In comparison, the prospect of a far-right election victory in some key EU member states never materialised. Even before the German election in the summer, political risk was largely assumed to have subsided in Europe; concerns about a far-right victory in both Holland and France earlier in the year resulted in the election of more centralist candidates, and where the euro was concerned markets breathed a sigh of relief and the common-currency enjoyed a decent run. Indeed, a political mandate for a far-right, antiEuropean, anti-immigration party would have been very negative for the EU, and as a result a real shock for the common currency – especially following the UK electorate’s vote to leave the union.

This isn’t to say it has been plain sailing for the euro, however. Interestingly, the German election proved a bit of a wake up call as Chancellor Merkel’s victory – with 33% of the vote – marked the weakest for her Christian Democrat-led alliance since 1949. This weaker mandate was inversely correlated with the rise of the nationalist Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, the first openly nationalist party following the Second World War to enter the Bundestag, as it gained 13%. This made the market jittery and the euro fell compounding what had already been a poor month in September as it had already lost approximately 5% against sterling since its 29 August high prior to the election. Despite the ongoing uncertainty around Brexit negotiations, the euro never really recovered against the pound and its dip in the late summer tempered its overall gains for the year. The pound was certainly aided by more positive economic data releases over the period – especially figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which showed that capital expenditure in the UK was actually stronger than expected, up 2.5% from the second quarter of 2016. Nonetheless, the gains that the euro made in the beginning of the year due to improved European economic data, the passing of political anxieties on the Continent, and the uncertainty of Brexit weighing heavy on the pound, were enough to make the euro a favoured currency for 2017. It is clearly difficult to predict what is in store for the euro in 2018. If you are due to make an international transfer, then the last year serves to remind us about the ups and downs that are an inherent part of the currency markets. English conversation classes are five years old OnThursday 14th December Torrevieja councillors marked the fifth anniversary of the English conversation classes with a special meal and presentation. The councillor for youth, Victor Ferrández, presented each volunteer with a certificate and was accompanied by centre managers Rosa Lázaro Alfaro and Gustavo García Silva too. ‘It was a superb evening,’ says Crystal East who is responsible for initiating the classes and continues to organise, co-ordinate and provide the inspiration for them. Crystal was also presented with a plaque to thank both her and the volunteers for the work they The volunteers enjoy a meal at the Bahia restaurant

The classes have proved to be very popular over the years as they provide those who need to learn English with a free opportunity to practise speaking. Over the five years that the classes have taken place, it is estimated that more than three hundred students have benefitted from the opportunity to chat in English with native speakers. During the evening, Crystal East also took time to thank the Concejalía de Juventud and those who work in the CIAJ building for the support that they provide. The classes are now a well-established part of the CIAJ’s calendar and Crystal points out that there are The plaque presented to Crystal East and the volunteers

It is here that the volunteers meet with their students on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon and Tuesday and Thursday morning. Altogether 16 regular volunteers attended the event and felt that their efforts were very much appreciated. With cooler weather coming over the next few months, don't let that deter you from enjoying your garden and outdoor living areas! Some basic outdoor fire pit and chiminea tips:

An outdoor fire pit or chimenea (a pot-bellied, freestanding fireplace) can truly transform a patio or deck area into an open-air room - and one that is cozy and warm in all but the most wintery of weather conditions. What is nice about most fire pits and chimineas is that they are portable, something an outdoor fireplace is not. They are also easier to set up because they require no building permits or expensive, time-consuming building of chimney stacks. Fire pits and chimineas can be put anywhere you already have your patio or deck area set up, or in a sheltered courtyard - basically anywhere you want to create a gathering spot. Another big plus is that they can fit into almost any landscape design seamlessly because they come in a variety of natural materials such as stone, tile, metal, and coloured concrete so they look very relaxed, and part of your existing landscape. They also come in a variety of shapes and designs, ranging from fire pit tables, to the more traditional rock fire pits on the ground. In addition, you can use whatever fuel is best for you to enjoy your fire because fire pits can be fueled with natural gas, gel and bio ethanol, wood, or wood substitutes. In fact, here are some basic tips to help you get the most out of your chiminea or fire pit, including picking out the best fuel to burn:

• Make sure your fire pit is completely level and on stable ground. • Always place fire pits away from combustable materials in the landscape. • Burn dry, well-seasoned firewoood. • Usually hardwoods such as oak, madrone, maple, hickory and ash burn cleaner than softwoods such as fir, pine or cedar. • For smoke-free burning, they can be fueled with natural gas. • To reduce pollution and reduce the chance of sparks, choose wood substitutes such as wax-based logs or compressed logs made of sawdust. • Compressed logs can also be made from recycled coffee grounds, mixed with molasses and some wax, to burn cleaner, give off a taller and more natural flame, and have a slightly sweet scent rather than a chemical smell. • Gel fueled fire pits are great for anywhere log fires are restricted such as apartment balconies. But they are also good to use for your deck, patio, porch, balcony, or gazebo because they are a no mess, no hassle way to have a fire. • Always observe fire ordinances and do not use your fire pit on no-burn or windy days. • Keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby. • Never leave a fire unattended. • Never overfill a fire pit or chiminea. So do not let the fact that the weather is cooling off keep you from enjoying your outdoor areas. Have a cook-out, roast marshmallows, sit around and tell “campfire stories”, or have a romantic evening - basically extend your summer a bit more throughout the year. Fire pits and chimineas are great for doing just that - so snuggle up and enjoy! Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO PORTOFINO with Vivalia Travel

“A small village, Portofino, stretches crescent-shaped along the edge of this calm bay.” Thus wrote Guy de Maupassant when describing Portofino, tiny sea village on the Italian Riviera circumscribed by the green of the Natural Regional Park and Marine Reserve. This splendid sea resort with its lux, Mediterranean personality, also boasts an ancient marine culture, and of course is another one of those spots beloved by artists, famous personages and writers that have long sung its praises. The “Piazzetta,” meeting-up point for the international jetset, is the symbol of Portofino, while the port, with its characteristic, brightly-colored houses, is the icon of this borgo’s maritime traditions, whose inhabitants were called delfini (“dolphins”) by the Greeks and Romans, so apt were they at sea navigation.“ The charm of these places, the fine cuisine of the Ligurian Region, and the innumerable cultural and nature itineraries make this corner of the Gulf of Tigullio an ideal destination any time of year. Nonetheless, tourists most appreciate Portofino during the summer months, when the flora is at its most lush, and the warm seawater transports visitors beyond paradise.

See

Travelers will not be able to see everything here, so many are the historic, cultural and

natural attractions. Still, make a little room in your schedule to see the Church of Portofino’s Patron Saint, San Giorgio, a construction from the 12th Century; inside are relics brought back by sailors after the Crusades, as well as a breathtaking panorama from the parvis (churchyard). Nearby, the Brown Castle (Castello Brown) is a fortress smack-dab in the middle of a hanging-garden, and characterized by partitions with lovely bas-reliefs, and architectonic embellishments in marble and slate. The lighthouse is accessible from here, and is situated on Punta del Capo (aka Punta Portofino), imposing itself over the entire bay. Equally-interesting is the Gothic Oratory of the Brotherhood of Mary Assumed (Oratorio della Confraternita dell’Assunta), preserving various artworks inside, including a 12th-Century wooden statue of the Assumption of the Virgin.

Do

Those curious about the local traditions can stroll the streets of Portofino’s borgo, visiting the artisan workshops where the town’s women sophisticatedly work elegant patterns of bobbin lace. Prefer a little adventure out in the open? Take an excursion up to Monte di Portofino for a slight adrenaline rush, or navigate the Gulf of Tigullio in a boat, for close contact with the

beautiful Mediterranean Sea. Special events also take place rather frequently during Portofino’s summer season – everything from international regattas to glitzy evening engagements and religious celebrations - for instance the Feast Day for San Giorgio (April 23rd), with a procession and final bonfire illuminating the Piazzetta. Finally, if fine wining-anddining is your thing (and it usually is), get ready for some prime sea-based dishes, served in restaurants throughout Portofino. Here the typical recipe is “Lasagna di Portofino,” delectable primo based on, what else, pesto. But before dinner, make sure you do as the locals do: head back to the Piazzetta for 7 o’ clock aperitivo, where you can snack on Genoese foccaccia and sip some Giancu de Purtufin, a wine that combines several of the territory’s grapes and that is only produced locally. You will have the opportunity to visit this amazing place as this is one of the ports of call of our 8 day cruise leaving Barcelona October 13th 2018. You will be also visiting Ajaccio in Corsica, Piombino and Portovenere in Italy. Also Port Mahon in Menorca. Enjoy this cruise for only 679€ port tax, all inclusive drink package and transport included!! For more information on this cruise or any other trips. It’s all about her

www.costablancapeople.com

My child says he is gay The other day my 11 year old blurted out that he is gay. It was while I was moaning at him for being untidy. I just said ‘ok’ and left it at that, but he wouldn’t leave it there. He often drops a bombshell about all sorts of things to see what my reaction is. I am not homophobic, and it wouldn’t be a problem if he was gay, but since then he won’t let it lie and keeps on about it.

My attention seeking sister-in-law went ‘vegan’ a year ago and we’ve not stopped hearing about how us meateaters are responsible for animals being murdered. Last year’s New Year’s meal, my Mum very thoughtfully made her a nut roast, and she said it was tasteless. Then to all our amazement she pours gravy all over it! I couldn’t help myself and (nicely) pointed out that the gravy was made from blood from the meat. Then she started crying. My brother reared up in her defence, and they marched out. They are not coming this year. My brother says it was my fault, and I was insensitive! Why do we have to walk on eggshells around them?

If he’s goading you it looks like he was waiting for a reaction that he never got. He might be saying it to see what you’d say. However, if these comments were genuine, he’s only 11 years old and whilst a lot of people are sure about their sexuality at that age, we have to consider that he might be feeling confused, or have even made it up. The next time he mentions it, you could say that him being gay is fine by you, and that once he is an adult he is free to live his life as he wishes.

It’s very difficult to stay quiet in situations like that. There’s nothing as far as I can see that you should reproach yourself for, and you should be able to say what you want. You can try dropping your brother a line to say they’d be welcome another time when the family gets together, and you won’t point out which foods have meat in them this year. The Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards Costa Blanca restaurants are once more in line to receive a prized accolade which celebrates all that is good about the dining scene in Spain. The 2018 Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards recognize excellence in the local dining industry, offering restaurateurs a standard to strive for, and diners a gauge by which to choose their eatery. Fresh ingredients, imaginative recipes and mouth watering menus from around the world are available to diners in the Costa Blanca region. We are spoiled for choice when it comes to lunch menus, evening meals and even a quick and tasty snack. With so much on offer, it can be a minefield choosing a restaurant or café that suits your needs. The Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards are a mark of excellence which diners can rely upon to guide them to a quality restaurant. Managing Director of the Costa Blanca People, Claire Richards, said “Last year’s Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards were a runaway success with hundreds of nominations received for restaurants and chefs up and down the Costa Blanca. The atmosphere the awards ceremony created was electric – people were cheering and clapping and up on their feet for our winners, the attitude was positive and uplifting and everyone had a good night. Now in their ninth year, the Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards are a hot topic within the industry and 2018’s Awards will serve as a great platform for bar and restaurant suppliers

and servicers to promote themselves directly to restaurant owners in a friendly and upbeat environment.” Claire continued, “We feel that having such a benchmark will really help consumers in choosing excellent restaurants. For restaurateurs, the winning of a Culinary Award will boost morale for staff and owners, and will offer restaurants a tangible ‘seal of approval’ which they can strive to win again and again as the years go on.” The 2018 Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards are broken into a number of categories:

Best Newcomer (open less than 12 months) Best Indian Restaurant Best European/International Restaurant Best Cafe/Bar/Pub Food Best Sunday Roast Best Fast Food Outlet Best Menu del Dia/Noche Best Fine Dining Best Chef Front of House Award for Outstanding Service Once nominations have been processed and the finalists chosen, a panel of judges will begin reviewing each restaurant in secret before a grand gala dinner where the winners will be announced. If you think your favourite restaurant should be in the running too, then get nominating!

Male Chefs more authoritarian and earn more than females Gender stereotypes are also present in haute cuisine, where male chefs tend to dominate the workspace more, are more authoritarian and sometimes condition the career of women, who charge up to 28.3 percent less than they do. This is confirmed by a study prepared by researchers from the Universitat Politècnica de València, belonging to the Cuina group and the Business Organisation Department, which reveals, in relation to leadership, female chefs are more "participatory and collaborative" and rely on the team that works with them. Some illustrations offered as proof were, for example, the last edition of the James Beard Gastronomic Awards to the best international chefs where of the 211 finalists only 30 were women, and that in 2014, of the 110 restaurants awarded with three Michelin stars, only six were run by women. In salaries there are also important

differences between both sexes, since the basic salary of women in the world of haute cuisine is 28.3% lower than that of men, according to the UPV. "Traditionally, in the domestic sphere, cooking has been associated with women, while restaurants and haute cuisine are still essentially a world of men, in which some masculine roles and stereotypes still persist," says José Albors, of the Department of Business Organization of the UPV. From this reality emerged the study, which is part of Majd Haddaji's doctoral thesis and has been published in the Journal of Culinary Science & Technology with the supervision of José Albors and Purificación García Segovia. To carry it out, researchers at the UPV gathered the opinion of eight leading chefs and co-owners of some of the most reputable restaurants in the

Region of Valencia. "The objective was to know their experience and personal experiences and if they had encountered any difficulties throughout their career as a woman, and what differences they would warn about their male colleagues," explains García. Among the most important conclusions, the study ensures that chefs tend to dominate more the workspace and sometimes condition the career of women. "This tendency is changing a bit now, but only for one particular reason:

it's because the kitchens are now open so that the diner can see what's happening inside and hence stops undesirable behaviour,” the researcher points out. On the other hand, Majd Haddaji also warns that the study reflects "a reality that, unfortunately, occurs in many sectors, which is that women, in this world of haute cuisine, need to demonstrate their skills much more than their male colleagues to get to the top. " In addition, the empathy with other women in the kitchen is much greater if the head of the kitchen falls on a woman rather than a male chef. During the work sessions, one of the chefs surveyed pointed out that, during the learning process, women have fewer opportunities to make decisions in a kitchen. Another one of the interviewees pointed out that during the processes

of creation -proposals of new ideas and concepts of dishes- the man is more important than the woman.

Leadership The study also analyses the leadership style of each other. In the case of female chefs, they stand out in most cases for being more participative and collaborative, relying on the team that works with them, while in the case of male chefs, the most predominant role is that of an authoritarian. Regarding creativity in women, it is a much more a reflective process than in the case of their male partners. The results of this research with Valencian chefs served as the starting point for a new study whose objective was to evaluate the expectations that cooking students have regarding their professional future. Post-Brexit Britain needs to learn Spanish to trade If Britain wants to make a success of trading with the world post-Brexit, it needs to work on its language skills – starting with Spanish, a recent study argues. The British Council, which works with foreign exchange students in the UK and British students abroad, as well as culture and education in general, says if the world is going to be the country’s future oyster, it will need more and more professionals fluent in a language other than English. Spanish, Chinese, French, Arabic and German are recommended in that order. The UK will also have to work hard on reinforcing its bilateral relationships with individual EU member States, since they are closer geographically and will still be important for trade, the British Council says. “A global Britain means being multilingual is going to become essential, although the current linguistic reality in

the UK is very different,” says the report. “We have to get out of the mantra that 'English is the international language for business' and start to understand the importance of learning other languages, and of the various circumstances in which they are being used either concurrently with, or at the cost of, English. “This is a critical moment, and the country will need citizens capable of reinforcing economic, political and cultural relations with our European neighbours.” The British Council's Teresa Tinsley, the main author of the study, spoke to international news medium ABC in London in perfect Spanish when she explained that the research had taken nto account ‘10 factors with contrasting figures’, including ‘economic, cultural, diplomatic, educational, business, government, leisure and cultural interests’. As for why Spanish is the first language the UK needs to be fluent in, Ms Tinsley says: “Firstly, for tourism; Spain is the

number one destination for British holidaymakers, which is why it’s the top language learnt by adults and now the second language taught in schools after French. “Secondly, because of the sheer number of countries who speak Spanish, which means learning it offers a clear diplomatic and commercial advantage. “We have to understand that although English is the lingua franca in many multi-national fora, in bilateral and trade relations, both languages are of equal importance. “Also, Spanish is one of the main languages of the United Nations.” Ms Tinsley says language teaching in UK schools has historically been very poor and relegated to a subject of lesser importance, despite being part of the core curriculum. French is still the first language taught at school, although Spanish is largely overtaking German as the second. “We urgently need to recruit more

language teachers,” Ms Tinsley says. “Only 34% of young people learn a language up to a basic level by the age of 16, and the rest do not even get that far. “This could be why the UK has such a low number of Erasmus scholarship students compared with other countries, because our own students don’t feel safeenough living somewhere that does not speak English. Barely 15,000 British students studied abroad via Erasmus in 2013, compared with 40,000 Spaniards who did so, and our report calls for the Erasmus format to be retained intact post-Brexit or, at least, bilateral foreign exchange programmes created. “But we need to be conscious of the fact that unless we improve our language skills, Britain is not going to go anywhere in terms of world trade.” Opportunities Spain already represented a market of 15 billion pounds (€16.8bn) for the UK

in 2015, and Latin America’s largest and fastest-growing economies, including México, Chile and Colombia are major opportunities for post-Brexit world trade. These three countries alone are home to 185 million Spanish-speakers who, in general, have a poor or non-existent level of English. México is expected to become the seventh-largest economy in the world before 2050 and the UK – currently its fifth-largest investor – wants to climb higher in the country’s rankings. Historian Manuel Lucena from Spain’s High Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) said the report was a positive result. “The UK has now realised that Spanish is a global language, but that as Britain’s former empire means millions of people worldwide speak English or are actively learning it to give themselves a competitive edge, the UK has not put in as much effort as it should have done and is likely to be left behind”.

Orihuela tourism up 20 per cent Visitors by tourists to Orihuela rose by 20% in 2017. Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez indicated that the impressive figures are due in part to the 75th Anniversary celebrations marking the death of Orihuela poet Miguel Hernández. Figures presented by Álvarez this week show tourism across Orihuela up by 20% on 2016. Speaking about the Hernández anniversary, Álvarez said, “The poet Miguel Hernández has had a special relevance within the town hall activities this year when we commemorated the 75th anniversary of his death, making his life and work known throughout Spain, and attending the International Fair of Tourism of Madrid (FITUR) with a bookmark of the poet, a fold-out and the representation of his works.” The Moors and Christians Festivities also contributed to the growth of tourism in the area, despite the last minute cancellation of the coastal festivities. Other successful initiatives having a positive impact on tourism figures were Holy Week

celebrations, Tapas Routes and a number of gastronomy events promoting local cuisine and showcooking.

Switzerland, Singapore and Finland top three in Global Knowledge Index The Global Knowledge Index identifies knowledge as an integral part of human life, affecting its social, economic and cultural aspects, as well as an engine for comprehensive and sustainable human development. The Index's first edition saw Switzerland take first place with 71.8 points out of 100, closely followed by Singapore (69.5), Finland (68.5), Sweden (68.3), Netherlands (68), the United States (67.2), Luxembourg (66.2), the United Kingdom (65.6), Denmark (65.2) and Norway (64.3). The Global Knowledge Index is based on a combination of six sectoral indices: preuniversity education; technical vocational education and training; higher education; information and communications technology;

research, development and innovation; and, finally, economy, in addition to a general sub-index on the general enabling environment. The index is calculated through 133 variables covering various vital sectors in the country, such as enrolment, graduation and drop-out rates in schools; literacy; unemployment; life expectancy at birth; egovernment; political stability; regulatory and legal frameworks; patents; private-sector indicators; quality and availability of human resources (students, teachers, professionals and researchers), among other criteria. Also among the Index's notable results were the Philippines and Azerbaijan ranking fourth and 11th, respectively, in technical vocational education and training, while the UAE ranked second in economy.

The Government sets the roadmap for 5G networks The Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda have this week set the roadmap for the deployment in Spain of the 5G network, with measures such as a public tender for the first frequency bands for this mobile technology and aid to encourage the implementation of pilot projects. The implementation of this technology, considered the cornerstone of digital transformation, will facilitate the provision of services that require high bandwidth in mobility and will give a boost to the applications for the Internet of Things (IoT), such as the connected car or digitalization of rural areas. The measures are included in the National 5G Plan, which the Ministry has published on Friday and with which Spain joins Germany and the United Kingdom as the third country of the European Union (EU) in having a plan of this type. At the beginning of 2018, the first frequency bands for 5G, 3.6 GHz and 1.5 GHz will be auctioned, with the aim of allowing operators to start carrying out the first innovative projects with 5G In the band between 3.6 to 3.8 GHz, 200 megahertz will be tendered and the spectrum blocks that already have several operators (such as Telefonica or Orange) will be reordered between 3.4 and 3.6 GHz. At auctions, the government will set limits on the amount of spectrum that each operator can have to avoid "hoarding" frequencies. The other two bands reserved for 5G, 700 MHz and 26 GHz, have not yet been scheduled for bidding, although sources from the Ministry have pointed out

that operators do not consider them a priority and have stressed that 5G can start "even commercially "without them. The band of 700 Mhz, which allows very large geographical coverage is currently used by digital terrestrial television so that its provision for mobile services will force a new retuning of DTT (TDT). It is expected that the first networks will be

deployed after next summer and that operators and manufacturers will start to introduce pilot services. The roadmap also foresees support for R & D & I projects in 5G and a follow-up office for the National Plan. It is estimated that the introduction of 5G in the sectors of the automotive, health, transport and public services in Spain will have an economic impact of up to 14,600 million euros before 2025, according to the sources. With this Plan, the Government wants Spain, with the 5G, to maintain the leadership it holds in telecommunications, by having the most extensive fibre network in Europe and a coverage of 4G that exceeds 95 percent of the population.

Ryanair to recognise unions Budget airline Ryanair has said it will recognise cabin crew unions. The Irish airline, Europe’s largest by passenger numbers, announced before Christmas that it would recognise pilots’ unions in a bid to head off strikes planned in the run-up to Christmas. The move marked a dramatic shift after decades of refusing to negotiate with unions and came after groups of pilots around Europe called strikes. Ryanair’s announcement that it will also recognise cabin crew unions comes after renewed

focus on its treatment of lower-paid staff. Crew have been warned of disciplinary proceedings for missing sales targets on scratchcards, while staff on Italian bases were threatened with collective sanctions if any member joined a strike called last week. The Impact union, whose members include cabin crew, said it would be delighted to start talks in due course. The airline was due to meet German and Portuguese pilot unions this week, as well as representatives of Ialpa, a branch of the Impact union in Ireland. Pilots had complained of a toxic atmosphere at Ryanair, where many had long been indirectly employed through third parties, an arrangement that had seen some pursued by tax authorities. There had also been problems about rostering and anger over disparaging comments made by the airline’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary. According to a recording of a meeting obtained by the Irish Independent newspaper, Ryanair executives told pilots at Stansted last week that the airline had “grown too fast” and lost their trust, but was working hard to restore it. Peter Bellew, chief operations officer of Ryanair, told the pilots he knew their problems had not been addressed. “Everywhere I turned, I could see that people were asking for small things to be done and they just weren’t getting done,” he was quoted as saying. “Or, not only were they not getting done, they were getting told: ‘P**s off; I don’t want to know about this’.” The airline cancelled 20,000 flights this winter due to a shortage of pilots and a rostering error. O’Leary went as far as producing a power point presentation highlighting perceived financial problems at rival operators to prevent an exodus of pilots, to Norwegian in particular. Ryanair has offered substantial pay increases to retain staff. With a large fleet of planes on order, it plans to grow passenger numbers rapidly in the coming years.

Falling out of love with exercise If you're sweating it out in the gym on the regular for the sole purpose of being able to fit in one more mince pie this December and New Year, you might want to rethink your tactics now. Believe it or not, too much exercise could actually make you put on weight, and although that's not the worst news we could hear today, it’s not great. It's all down to 'burning out', apparently: too much exercise, and you'll stop being able to train properly, which in turn will affect your body's ability to burn fat. One Personal trainer and injuryprevention specialist said: “Exercising at a high intensity for an extended period of time, especially in addition to the stress of work, life, relationships, and body image, can throw you into adrenal fatigue. 'Your body essentially has exhausted its capacity to fight, but you continue to put it in 'fight or flight' mode by exercising - especially high-intensity, long-duration exercise. This throws your hormones out of balance, causing fatigue, poor performance, fogginess, and weight gain - especially around your middle.” If this revelation has left you wondering if you're affected, some signs of adrenal fatigue include constant tiredness, trouble focusing, and slow recovery time – however, it's always best to seek a doctor's advice if you're struggling with these symptoms or are worried about exercise. Bear in mind that 'more is not necessarily better' when it comes to your workout – and instead, sometimes its advisable for those who are training to lose weight to 'choose a routine that supports your goals...Stick to longduration/low-intensity, or short-duration/high-intensity'. And the ultimate gym sin? ...Exercising twice a day (yes like we all do that don´t we…). Remember that rest days are important to give your body a chance to recover; without them, you could throw your hormones out of whack. That's not to say exercise shouldn't still be incorporated into your routine – even if it's just a gentle walk. As with everything, balance is key. So if the scales aren´t rolling backwards, how can you stay motivated to carry on with those workouts? Just when you feel like you've finally gotten into a solid workout groove, something horrible happens: You lose every ounce of motivation, succumb to exhaustion, and want to throw your just-broken-in tennis shoes out the window. We've all been there. Workout burnout is real, but it is possible to become friends with fitness without ending up hating it down the road. Here are a few tips to stay happy, healthy, and motivated for the longterm. 1. Switch up your workouts Hitting up a high-intensity class every day before work? The weight-loss results might be there, but they're not sustainable if you're constantly pushing your body beyond its limits without giving yourself a break. Go back to doing things that are more restorative in nature - like walking, meditation, and yoga - and not just doing the push-push-push. Workouts like HIIT are so addictive - they get our adrenaline so high. But they can do damage to your joints and muscles, as well as your adrenal

glands. Instead, try cross-training, meaning training in many different activities to achieve full-body results and keep you out of a rut. You can work out seven days a week. What you shouldn't do is high-intensity workouts or weighttraining seven days a week. Three of those seven days should be more gentle workouts, like Tai Chi, Pilates, or yoga. Then three days a week doing something high-intensity. Then the seventh day, have a fun workout day. 2. Find a change of scenery Instead of spending every day of the week at the gym or in a class, take at least one day to spice things up. Your mind will thank you for the change in routine. Go to the beach, play volleyball, go on a hike; do something outside. Sometimes people who are workout people- think that if they don't go to the gym or a workout class, they're not getting a workout in. A hike counts! 3. Catch some zzzs Sometimes it’s OK to cancel your fitness session and get some sleep - that's the number one thing. Number two is nutrition. And number three is doing more therapeutic movements. That's going to get you both the calming effects, and also the workout effects. In hard workouts, you're putting your nervous system into more shock. It's more important to make sure you get in the calming workouts and the high-intensity workouts. 4. Take time for yourself Sometimes you just have to get away from it all - no sweat included. Take a walk by the beach, along the coast, with your dog and just relax. 5. Find your balance If you want to meet up with your girls for a night on the town (or just sitting around sipping wine in your pyjamas), go for it. Taking the time to go have a drink with your girlfriends is of the upmost importance, that's a level of enjoyment and happiness. But there's a difference between meeting your girlfriends for a drink or two and having an entire bottle of wine by yourself at home. There's also a big difference between having a occasional drink and drinking every single night at 5:30 after work. If you know you have something fun coming up, plan for it and factor it in to your eating and exercise routines. If after all that, you’re still not falling back in love with your workouts, then switch to something more sedate so that you are still exercising and reaping those health benefits, but don´t find it such a chore. Walking

can be a wonderful way to help whittle away your waistline... Practise interval-walking It's not just walking faster that burns more calories – changing pace will hike (excuse the pun) calorie-burn too, one study found. Researchers from Ohio State University found that changing pace can increase metabolic rate up to 20% more than maintaining one fixed pace. The study also found we tend to walk faster when we cover longer distances, contrary to what you might think. Once a week, plan a longer interval-based walk of 40-plus minutes to really notice a difference. Part-walk or walk your commute Incidental exercise, the stuff you can squeeze into your daily routine, is the exercise that will really make a difference simply because you're more likely to stick to it. Walking burns around four calories a minute, give or take a calorie or two depending on your build, so if you manage to walk at least 15-20 minutes as part of your existing Mondayto-Friday routine, you could lose a Continued on page 44

Continued from page 43 pound over eight weeks. And the data to support this is hefty – a study published in the BMJ found those who actively commuted had both lower BMI and body fat than their non-active commuting counterparts. And the benefits don't end there. Researchers from UEA and the University of York found 'active travel' offered a boost to mental wellbeing too, in particular for stress management, decision making and mood-boosting. Top tip: Jogging and running pretty much doubles your calorie burn so try breaking out into a gentle jog for a minute or two at a time. Nothing tough enough to leave you entering the office pouring with sweat but enough to get you a bit out of breath. Change the gradient Expect to burn around 30 percent more calories by adding even a small gradient to your walk. It's a no brainer that you'll expend more energy walking uphill but a third is a worthwhile hike. You'll work hamstrings (backs of thighs) and glutes (bum muscles) more by walking uphill too. Top Tips: • Taking smaller steps can lessen the impact on joints as you climb uphill, well as helping you to keep your balance. • You may find yourself naturally leaning in as you tackle the hill – a small tilt's okay but always try to keep torso positioned over hips. • No hills? Try the treadmill. Aim for a 3-5% incline while keeping your speed fairly brisk. Take the stairs Including as many flights of stairs into your daily routine is a must if whittling

waistline is one of your goals. Just over 10 minutes a day of climbing the stairs will burn off that mid-afternoon chocolate bar! And when it comes to your heart health, pace doesn't matter – new research has found that sprinting up the stairs will do the same as opting for a slower pace. So you can mix and match your pace, depending on how you feel. And there's more; you'll be giving your brain a boost every time you ditch the lift, too. Researchers at Concordia University found the brain age can decreases by 0.58 years from daily stair-climbing!. Top tips: • Taking stairs two-at-a-time will help to work the butt and thigh muscles. • Keep good posture while climbing. If you feel your form is flagging, don't hesitate to use the handrail. Add in body weight exercises Incorporating simple body weight exercises into your walk will help you achieve weight goals in two ways: firstly, you'll be burning a higher number of calories while on your walk but you'll also be helping to boost metabolic rate, so you're burning more calories at rest. Top tip: • Stick to compound moves (those that work multiple muscle groups) to get the most calorie-burning bang for your effort buck. Walking lunges will work the entire lower body and can be seamlessly integrated into the shortest of walks. Ditto wall and bench push ups, while the park bench plank is a relatively straightforward add-on that acts as a total body toner. Combine all three and you're looking at top-to-toe conditioning without even breaking a sweat!

Ditch the tracker Contrary to what you may have been led to believe, your fitness tracker may not be helping you to drop a dress size as much as you think. A study published in JAMA found participants who didn't use a tracker lost five pounds more than those who did. The authors concluded that "the gap between recording information and changing behavior is substantial." Top tips: • If you're looking to lose weight, avoid viewing your walking data as 'extra calories'. See your steps as an added bonus that will enhance your weight loss efforts. • Avoid getting discouraged by your device data. If you're too tired to take one more step but you're a significant way off your step goal, do what you can and move on. And avoid the urge to compensate by comfort eating! Instead, buddy-up If you're ditching the digital motivation, try replacing with a gym-buddy. It's the social encouragement and positive feedback that comes from using a tracker that helps to create long lasting behaviour change, rather than the data alone. University of Aberdeen researchers also found enlisting the help of a gym buddy increased the amount of exercise participants took. Top tip: • Start a walking WhatsApp group to spur one another on to increase the number of steps you take. Set step goals, exchange walking pics (scenic as well as selfies)… • Creating your own supportive and motivational exercise community will be rewarding on many levels.

I have upgraded to Windows 10 and installed the new Windows Defender and Malwarebytes and I am told this is enough security. Aunty Says: Those should be enough Victor. You can remove AVG from ‘Control Panel’ ‘programs and features’ (type control panel into the search box) but if you´ve tried this and it still pops up then maybe try AVG’s very own removal tool which you will find by typing AVG REMOVER into Google. Michael via email asks: Hi aunty. I have gone over to windows 10 and my Google translator has stopped working! The translation in progress just keeps spinning and nothing happens, any help would be greatly appreciated. Aunty Says: Hello Michael. I will need to know what browser you are using to be 100% sure (Chrome or Firefox etc) but I have always accessed the Google Translator via the

Google website www.translate.google.co.uk which seems to work OK regardless of which browser you are using. Marco via email asks: Hi Aunty, I am having a seriously annoying problem with my laptop. It shuts down for no apparent reason and I have to restart it again with the on/off button and it will often launch a repair which can take forever to finish.. Can you advise me as although it is a 6 year old Dell I am very attached to it? Aunty Says: Normally Marco when a laptop consistently switches off this is a sure sign it is overheating and will likely get worse as the summer comes. Blowing any dust & fluff from the air vents underneath and around the sides will help, and also propping the laptop up slightly so cool air can flow underneath will often improve things. If your problem happens randomly then maybe also check you don’t have a loose connection where the power charger is plugged in. Keep me posted. Graham from Newcastle asks: Hello Aunty, I have a Dell laptop with Windows 8 for years and

Excessive use of technology can affect children’s mental health Paediatric specialists at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia and Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja stress that presents should be fun and encourage child development Christmas and Three Kings is a time of year that children love and on Christmas day and January 6th, toys are often the main focus. However for parents it means having to decide what the best present is for their children. The first thing to take into consideration, notes Doctor María Mínguez a paediatric specialist at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, is that “toys should be fun, and play a positive role in the development of the child’s physical and mental health”. An excessive use of technology can affect children’s mental health. Nowadays videogames are one of the most popular gifts. They are a big part of some children’s lives and therefore help to develop important skills such as psychomotor abilities and reflexes. Nevertheless, the specialist adds “an uncontrolled use of these games can create addictions and some children can lose a sense of what is real, intensifying the risk of social exclusion”. Playing is a great way for all ages to have fun; it encourages connection and communication between adults, children and teenagers. Games and toys help to educate and build creativity as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle which leads to a reduction in child obesity. Devoting too much time to videogames or watching too much television produces sedentary habits that end in obesity and related illnesses (diabetes, high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol, etc.). That’s why, according to Doctor Mínguez, “the best toy should become a source of good health and not an obstacle for the current and future well-being of the child”. Always read the labels Doctor Marta Granados, a specialist at Hospital

Quirónsalud Murcia, points out that when choosing the right toy it’s necessary to pay attention to its functionality. A parent’s decision should take into account the age of the child, so that they know how to use the toy and so that it’s not a danger to them. “It’s convenient to avoid plastic because of its colour and sound, which limits a child’s imagination and stops them from creating their own games”, the specialist adds. This is why it’s so important to read the labels which give information on the materials and resistance of the toys. The amount of presents or buying the latest trend, are also two worries for mums and dads at Christmastime and for Three Kings. Parents should use the present giving to educate their children and teach them to accept surprises. Doctor Granados adds, “Children will not be disappointed because they don’t have the latest toy or because they receive 5 presents instead of 10; they just need to realise that they have been given something special. It’s their parents who need to put a limit on the number of presents, including from other family members”. Books should always be given, since they are just as fun as toys with their pictures, bright colours and textures; and they also promote the habit of reading from an early age. A child’s play is determined by their parent’s dedication. However there is no use in buying the best present or the largest amount of gifts for a child if they are not going to be able to play with them with their parents. “Mums, dads, and teachers spend time with kids on a daily basis and they are responsible for reinforcing their learning and independence”, explains Doctor Granados.

10 tips for buying toys: 1. Look for toys that are age appropriate for your child. 2. Stay away from toys that could be dangerous: always read the labels. 3. Videogames are not advisable for children under 9 years old. 4. Mobile phones are not advisable for children under 12 years old. 5. Television and computers should not be allowed in bedrooms; these devices should be used with other family members and computers should always be controlled by parents. 6. Don’t give any toys, games or videogames if they are violent. 7. Don’t buy very expensive toys that you are going to be worried about the child breaking. 8. Don’t buy sophisticated toys that adults like but that are not as enjoyable for children, because this limits their imagination and encourages them to play passively. 9. Don’t give toys that encourage sexist roles in girls or boys: all children should be able to enjoy any type of toy, independent of their gender. 10.

Always include a book as a present.

just use it for emails, skype and flights etc. but I am recently getting a message that my trial version of my McAfee security program has expired. I don’t ever recall signing up for a free (or any) trial and I don’t think I should have to pay for something I didn’t ask for but I will if I have to. Should I trust this and pay over the internet or keep ignoring it? And what is the best simple alternative? Aunty Says: I wouldn’t bother Graham. The free trial from MacAfee was likely either pre-installed on your laptop or installed when you did an Adobe Reader or Flash Player update/install. The question of what is the best antivirus/security program is constantly changing but Windows 8 and 10 both come with Windows Defender built in, which coupled with the free Malwarebytes, should give you adequate protection. No amount of security programs will guarantee you 100% protection but as long as you use a bit of common sense and you’re careful as to what websites & links you are accessing you should be fine. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week.

Christmas with friends What better way to spend Christmas than with a group of friends all intent on having a good time together. 14 people mainly from the U3A that have become good friends through a couple of the group activities, petanca and Spanish mainly, spent their festive break at Mojacar and had a great time. The weather was marvellous, hotel good and apart from several people having the annual coughs and sneezes, a good time was managed to be had by all. Christmas morning after breakfast saw a game of beach petanca being tried out. Not very successful; nothing like the real thing but a table of christmas goodies on the beach soon helped to put that matter right. Roll on next year.

Uber strikes self drive deal Uber has struck a deal to buy up to 24,000 self-driving cars from Volvo. The agreement envisages that the passenger pick-up service will purchase the cars over the course of three years starting in 2019. Uber began testing prototypes made by Volvo last year in the US. One expert said the announcement "makes a good headline" but had doubts that fully autonomous, driverless Uber rides would be ready to begin until some years later. Uber and Volvo have not disclosed financial terms, but have confirmed that the deal is "non-exclusive" meaning both are free to form similar partnerships with others. "Our aim is to be the supplier of choice for autonomous driving ride-sharing service providers globally," said Volvo in a statement. "(The) agreement with Uber is a primary example of that strategic direction." Chinese company Geely bought Volvo from Ford in 2010. Assuming Uber buys all 24,000

XC90 sports utility vehicles (SUVs) outlined in the agreement, the deal could be worth $1.4bn (ÂŁ1.1bn), according to an estimate by the Financial Times. Under their pre-existing agreement, Uber already uses various customised Volvo vehicles - which include some of the carmaker's own self-drive

hardware - and then adds on its own proprietary artificial intelligence technologies. The new agreement seeks to radically expand the scale of the operation. "The issue is that we don't have any legislation in any city of the world that would remotely allow this sort of thing to happen at the moment," said Paul Newton, director at the consultancy IHS

Automotive, about the idea of a totally driverless taxi service. "We're expecting Japan to be one of the first to allow 'level four' automation - where you have the vehicle doing most of the work but still need a human with steering controls in the driving seat. "But 'level five' - where it's a completely autonomous vehicle in every sense of the word - is less likely to be around in this timeframe." He added that even if the technology were ready in the next five years, new laws and infrastructure would probably take longer to put in place. Uber's self-drive ambitions may also be delayed by a legal dispute with Waymo - a self-drive business owned by Google-parent Alphabet. Waymo claims Uber benefited from the theft of some of its trade secrets and is seeking about $1.9bn (ÂŁ1.4bn) in damages. The case is due to go to court in San Francisco in early December.

Tyre Load Capacity Following on from our introduction to checking tyres, we are going to look at some of the elements and details of vehicle tyres and the importance of what they mean. Knowing how to read a tyre forms part of the driving test in Spain, which is testament to how important the DGT feel the subject is. We have already said that they are arguably amongst the most important elements of a vehicle, and often the most abused, but sadly, they are often the most neglected. It is important that the vehicle´s tyres are of a high quality, not least because of the wear and tear they suffer, investing that little bit more in a tyre could make the difference between life and death. We have already detailed what the figures around the tyre mean but we will go over them briefly again as a reminder. If you look at the side of the tyre you will see a sequence which looks something like this sample, “195 / 55 R 16 87V”. Here,

“195” refers to 195 millimetres, the nominal section width of the tyre. “55” is 55%, the aspect ratio, representing the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the nominal section width, i.e., in our case, 55% of 195mm. “R” stands for radial construction. “16” is the diameter of the tyre´s inner rim, this time in inches. “87” is the load capacity of the tyre. “V” indicates the maximum permitted speed. There is also the stamp indicating the week number and the year of manufacture. We want to look specifically at the load capacity of the tyre this time. As the summer holiday season starts, it is quite common for the family car to be loaded up for a long journey cross country, perhaps even across the continent, and the amount of cargo, as well as passengers, often increases compared to our normal daily commute. That is why we have to ensure that the load capacity of the tyre can handle the

extra weight we place in the vehicle. Overloaded vehicles quite literally weigh down on the tyres which can increase the risk of uneven wear and the dangers that poses, but also hugely increases the risk of a “blow out”, which in turn could have fatal consequences. Sadly, for the average driver, they don´t make it too simple for us to immediately see what the load capacity is, as the number in the code needs to be converted to a weight. In our example, 87V, the tyres can carry a maximum load of 545 kilograms. Keep in mind though, this is the total maximum weight of the vehicle. It also shows why it is important that all the tyres on the vehicle match, as if they are different, the load capacity may be lower. In our example, the letter “V” refers to a maximum speed of 240 kilometres per hour, but speed limits must be maintained by the road and conditions, rather than the maximum that the tyres can endure. Volkswagen bounces back Disgraced carmaker Volkswagen is on course to set a new production record in 2017, as more than six million cars have rolled out of its factories worldwide with several days of the year to go. This will be the first time VW has exceeded the 6m threshold. Wolfsburg, which builds cars at more than 50 factories in 14 countries, says its most popular models in 2017 globally were:

1. Jetta 2. Golf 3. Santana 4. Passat 5. Polo VW has built more than 150m vehicles in the past 72 years and its product portfolio now stretches to more than 60 models. The production milestone indicates that Volkswagen has rebounded well

from 2015's diesel emissions scandal. But despite rising production and sales, the crisis still rumbles on more than two years later. In related news, it emerged that VW's management is petitioning Germany's constitutional court in a bid to block the appointment of an independent auditor to probe its behaviour during 2015's Dieselgate scandal.

How to Lose Points

Child Seats Recent changes to the laws in Spain state that children measuring 135 cm in height or less must ride in the rear seats of a vehicle, irrespective of their age, and must sit in the correct and approved seat appropriate to their size and weight. The Child Restraint Systems provide the best protection for a child when on board a vehicle. That is why the law dictates their use, in an attempt to enforce the maximum protection for children. The use of child restraint systems reduces injuries by up to 75% in the event of a collision. According to data from the DGT, road traffic incidents are the leading cause of death amongst children under 14 years of age, and, tragically, 40% of those children who lose their lives wore no protection system, and, according to the statistics, could well be alive today. The law also requires seats to be of an approved standard. Those which meet the minimum required standards carry an orange label, usually located at the rear, which guarantees that the seat has undergone a series of tests to prove safety and reliability. The approval system is based on a European standard and EU regulation ECE-R44.03, which also ensures certain information is listed on the label. Classification of Child Restraint Seats There are a number of classifications for

car seats which are based on the physical characteristics of the child, the most important being weight and age. Group 0 This category includes the baby from birth through 1 year. It can be used for children up to 10 kilos of weight. There are two elements that are typically used either a bassinet with harnesses to locate in the rear seats and which engages the seat belt or a child safety seat slightly tilted that may be placed in the front seat in the opposite direction of travel, or at the rear, in which case it is preferable to place it in the centre so as to minimize possible damage in the event of a side collision. If placed in the front, we must ensure that the airbag device for the passenger seat is disconnected. It is safest to place it in the back seat in the opposite direction of travel. Group 0+ It is a new category that extends the weight up to 13 kg and for children up to 18 months. It is a chair that normally sits on the back seats and in the opposite direction of travel so as to better protect against any collision. Placing the chair in this way further protects the neck and spine. Group I Children weighing between 9 and 18 kilos, and approximately 1 to 4 years. The chairs are hooked in the seat belt of the vehicle. They are always located facing

the direction of travel, using the fitted vehicle seat belt or an extension on the chair itself. The latter incorporate a harness of 4 or 5 points of anchorage. Group II For children 3 to 6 years, which with a weight between 15 and 25 kilos. It consists of or booster cushion with backrest provided with lateral protection for the head and is fitted at the rear in the direction of travel and, if possible, in the centre. You should include lateral guides to position the belt tight at the hips, avoiding injuries in the abdominal cavity or column. Group III For children between 5 and 12 years, weighing between 22 and 36 kilos. It is a booster cushion, possibly backed with side and head protection and height adjustment, so as to allow it to be vehicle seat belt to fit firmly over the child's collarbone. Tips for buying a seat Before purchasing a child seat, check your vehicle manual for instructions on how to secure the seat and to ensure it is compatible. Take your vehicle to the location where you are purchasing the chair and ask them to demonstration assembly. Do it yourself in the presence of the seller. Take your child and try the chair in order to verify that the child can sit comfortably and safely. Mark Nolan

Use Your Indicators One of the biggest annoyances of drivers in Spain is when other drivers fail to use their indicators. In Spain, failing to indicate is punishable by a 200 euro fine. It is important to remember that indicators are there in order to “indicate” our intentions, and therefore must be used before any manoeuvre takes place, remember your driving school days, Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre. Indicating after you have started to slow down of change direction does not give sufficient warning. Equally, it must be remembered that they don´t give us priority over other road users. We must indicate whenever we intend to deviate from our course or direction. In other words, if we are going to turn or change lanes for example. On a roundabout we must signal our intention to leave the roundabout immediately after passing the exit before ours. Pulling out from a parking spot or changing lanes can allow other drivers to assess if they are able to safely alter their course, although caution must still be exercised.

Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres we can do, especially when the move involves invading the opposing lane. It is important to indicate our intentions to warn other road users who might be considering doing the same thing, especially more vulnerable road users such as motorbikes. Turning into or out of a minor road

must always be indicated, whether left or right, in order to also advise other road users, including those we may not have seen, such as pedestrians and cyclists. Remember though, always indicate first and always remember that indicating does not give us a right to move, or change our priority on the road, it simply indicates our intentions to other road users.

Unlike the UK, where penalty points are added to the licence, in Spain, drivers who have been qualified for more than 3 years begin with a credit of 12 points. New and novice drivers with less than 3 years of experience start with 8 points. If no infractions are committed during the next 3 then 2 points are automatically added to that credit, resulting in safer drivers obtaining 15 points. Drivers who have lost points can recover their entire initial credit of 12 points after a period of 2 years without being punished for offences involving the loss of points (unless the loss of points was due to a very serious infringement, in which case the deadline to recover all points will be 3 years). If you want to check the balance of your driving licence points, you can do so via the internet. Visit the DGT website, www.dgt.es, and click the section entitled, “¿Cuantospuntostengo?”, followed by “ConsultaTusPuntos”. You will be given a variety of links which will lead you to be able to access the information securely via your digital signature. How to Lose Points The DGT has issued a list of some the top reasons why drivers in Spain lose points from their licence, categorised by their severity. LOSE SIX POINTS 1. Driving with a rate of alcohol greater than 0.50 mg per litre of exhaled air. If professional and novice drivers (qualified less than two years), the limit is reduced to 0.30 mg / l. 2. Driving under the influence of drugs, psychotropics, stimulants and other substances with similar effects. 3. Refusing to submit to a breathalyser test or drug screening. 4. Driving in a reckless manner (endangering other drivers), driving in the opposite direction or engaging in unauthorised races. 5. Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50% the maximum authorised limit and by at least 30 kilometres per hour. 6. Using mechanisms or instruments that inhibit traffic monitoring or radar detection systems. 7. Exceeding driving time by more than 50% or reducing rest times by

more than 50% of those laid down in legislation on land transport. LOSE FOUR POINTS 8. Driving with a blood alcohol level between 0.25 and 0.50 mg per litre of exhaled air. For professional and novice drivers, the limit is between 0.15 and 0.30 mg / l. 9. Throwing objects on or nearby the road that could cause fires, accidents or impede other road users. 10. Driving on motorways or dual carriageways with vehicles that are expressly prohibited. 11. Driving a vehicle with an occupation that increases by 50% or more the number of authorised seats. 12. Driving a vehicle without a licence for that vehicle. 13. Driving with a suspended licence or having been banned for driving that vehicle. 14. Driving negligently and putting other road users at risk. 15. Failure to comply with the legal provisions on the priorities and the obligation to stop at the stop sign and traffic lights. 16. Failure to comply with the legal provisions on overtaking, endangering or hindering those moving in the opposite direction and overtaking in places or circumstances of reduced visibility. 17. Overtaking, endangering or hindering cyclists. 18. Perform a reversing manoeuvre on motorways. 19. Increasing speed or performingmanoeuvres that prevent or hinder overtaking by the driver of another vehicle. 20. Failure to observe the signs and signals of agents that regulate movement. 21. Failure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. LOSE THREE POINTS 22. Making the change of direction in breach of the provisions in road safety laws. 23. Driving using a mobile phone, programming the browser, using headphones or other devices that reduce the attention. 24. Not using seat belts, child restraints, helmets and other protective equipment. It was hard not to feel sorry for Pep Guardiola as Manchester City fell one game short of the worldwide record of 19 matches won in a row. That record, incidentally, is held by one Pep Guardiola so let’s not worry about him too much, eh? Forget Pep for a moment. What about Roy bloody Hodgson? Give him the England job for crying out loud. If he can organise a Crystal Palace team to do so well against a much better side, imagine what he could for England in the World Cup? Oh. Iceland, you say? Palace should have only gone and won the game too, missing another last-minute penalty after Wilf Zaha, of course, went over in the area. That’s two spot-kicks missed with 90 minutes on the clock for Palace, costing them a total of 4 points. As for Jason Puncheon, wow. Already up in court for alleged assault and carrying a weapon then he goes and does that to Kevin de Bruyne. I like him. Not as much as I like Roy Hodgson though – one of the sights of the season was watching him and Pep having a bit of a chat in the dugout after the game. I know the modern game is moving on fast, but since when did we hear of player transfers being announced by global clothing brands? Nike, naturally, briefly had something on their website announcing that Philippe Coutinho was off to the Camp Nou for a mere €125m and were offering a special deal on shirts with his name on if you paid for them before next weekend (or something). It was removed quicker than Mo Salah turned the game against Leicester City back in Liverpool’s favour. It would not have been Liverpool without some kind of defensive howler and Joel Matip could well be

expecting Virgil van Dijk to take his shirt next weekend after selling Emre Can up the river early in the game. Every Liverpool fan looked at the £75m Dutchman and said with their eyes, “that’s what you’re coming here to sort out, Virgil la”. Jurgen Klopp “hates” the price he has had to pay Southampton, presumably having done the maths and realising he could have bought the whole club by now for the total transfer fees Liverpool have sent down to the South Coast. Last week it was because Manchester United had not spent enough. This week it was the fault of Craig Pawson for not giving a penalty. Yes, that’s right – Manchester United, the most successful club in Premier League history, need penalty decisions to go their way to beat one of the worst Southampton sides for years. At home. How bad has it got for Jose? It is starting to feel like the public meltdown is one more dodgy decision or silly draw away. Will he even last the season? United will be without Romelu Lukaku, for real rather than him just being rubbish, as he has concussion and it turns out that the Lion’s knee is not as well healed as everyone thought. You didn’t rush back, did you Zlatan? Real Madrid and Barcelona want to buy Daley Blind. All that says is neither club actually bothers watching players they decide to sign. Apparently, Mark Hughes fielded a “weakened side” against Chelsea. Could anyone actually tell the difference? Chelsea battered Stoke City 5-0 and even Danny Drinkwater (a) played and (b) scored which tells you just how bad Stoke were. Sparky reckons it will be worth it though if they beat Newcastle later today. You just know what is going to happen. Arsene Wenger has now managed 811 times in the Premier League and at least one of his squad for the (result) with West Bromwich Albion were not even born

when he took charge against Blackburn Rovers all those years ago. Wenger has 811 and Pardew has about 200 too many as the team he was brought into bounce up the table seems to have developed a puncture. WBA seem somewhat adverse to winning under Pardew and scoring isn’t something they are that fond of either. As a Premier League way to sign off 2017, it wasn’t that good really – and can you name a worse free-kick goal than Sanchez’s? It was hardly Bobby Carlos and it’s no wonder it was given as an OG. Mind you, tell me how Calum Chambers gets done for handball and Yoshida doesn’t? Petr Cech has to wait just that little bit longer for his 200th clean sheet. Carlos Carvalhal apparently gave his new Swansea City team a proper goingover at half-time as they trailed 1-0 to Watford. Bizarrely, it worked as Swansea scored twice in the last five minutes to give the new gaffer a win on his debut. Carlos Carvalhal was sacked last week by Sheffield Wednesday as Swansea City continue to give jobs to managers that have failed in the Championship. Still, getting a win so early into the new regime is way more than West Bromwich Albion have achieved under Pardew. In a rare moment of managers agreeing and players allegedly being honest, Huddersfield Town’s David Wagner agreed that Jeff Hendrick had been fouled by Jonas Lossl and it should have been a penalty to Burnley. How had he drawn that conclusion? Lossl had told him so. Unsurprisingly, this did not make Sean Dyche feel any better but it was another clean sheet for the Turf Moor lot. Jeff Hendrick. Huddersfield want to bring in Monaco’s Terence Kongolo, which tells you everything you need to know about how stupidly rich even the smallest Premier League clubs have now become. Here's a thought to get us going. Is Jesse

Lingard better than Marcus Rashford? Or is this about as good as it's ever going to get for Jesse and the rest of his career is destined to be like Tom Cleverley? Either way, he scored a cracker against Everton at Goodison Park last night sealing a solid, unspectacular and at times, downright dull win for Manchester United. Poor Jose had to make do with picking a £60m striker in Anthony Martial given that Romelu and Zlatan were unavailable and it was Martial who opened the scoring. Jose! Jose! A centre-forward with a decent first touch and can hit the target more often than not. Don't fancy using him, do you? Back to Jesse for a moment. Good teams often have players with that bit of chemistry between them, something just clicks. Together they make each other even better - think Alan Shearer and Teddy. Lineker and Beardsley. Mahrez and Vardy. Drinkwater and Kante. They may not be the best players in the side like Gerrard and Lampard were supposed to be, but how they work together immediately makes their team better. That's what Lingard and Pogba have going on so surely Jose has to play them as often as possible? They have a better, more honest relationship than the majority of celebrity marriages, so cash in on it Jose! Still, it was good to see Wayne Rooney setting United off on a swift counter-attack just like the good old days. Post-match Jose took aim at Paul Scholes - Scholes would have probably preferred it if Romelu had because he would have missed - claiming that the exUnited ginger maestro "does nothing but criticise my players". Jose has a point. It's over Scholesy and, to be fair, you've done nothing other than be a whinging pundit since quitting. Jose went to say that he'd love Scholes to try management and "wishes that he could be at least 25% successful as I have been as he will have had a good career then".

So how did that work out for you Sparky? Stoke City pretty much threw the game at Chelsea in order to get all three points against Newcastle United yesterday. The only problem was neither the Stoke or Newcastle players bothered reading the script. In his prematch chat, Shaqiri oddly said: "we play for Stoke City, yes the manager is a small part of that but we play for Stoke City". It doesn't sound like the players give two whatevers about Hughes anymore, but Shaq's claim that "they play for Stoke City" was bizarre as his performance against Newcastle suggested that it is the last thing he is doing. Charlie Adam was back to his creative best, his pin-point pass sending Rafa's men on the attack that led to the winning goal. After the game, before he stormed out in a bit of a huff, Hughes said "it was clear we deserved to get something out of the game". But Mark, that's not how the league table works, is it? You lost. Again. Do the decent thing now. At the end of the day, who could have possibly seen Stoke City ending up with a load of overpaid prima donnas who don't really care that much about the club? QPR fans are smirking their little faces off right now. It was good to see Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan come up with a cunning plan to keep Virgin on the bench after his signing as announced. Combine to score a last minute winner! Genius, but I can't see it being enough to keep the world's most expensive defender out of the side no matter how much Jurgen Klopp "hates" how much he cost. That's two late wins in a row for Liverpool now, which is great considering the knives were out pretty quickly on social media after Burnley got a late equaliser. Liverpool are still 4th, but it feels like they are on the move.
