We know that the widening of the N332 around Torrevieja will now go ahead. The question is when. The project, which is desperately needed as soon as possible, has a very long introductory schedule. The drafting of the project itself could take up to 18 months. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, is keen to see if there is a way of speeding up the process. Such a long lead in time would mean that actual work on the project could not start until the end of 2020. The tender is expected to open on January 22nd and be awarded at the end of February. It continues to be plagued by differences between provincial and regional government. Disagreements that have haunted the proposal from the start

and have continued to lead to delays. Following on from the award of the contract for drafting the project will be the contract for completing the work. It is not expected that this will start until late 2021. In the meantime, the people of Torrevieja and surrounding districts continue to face delays on this stretch of road. Now, it is in the early morning and at noon when the road is at its busiest. With the volume of traffic there continues to be regular accidents particularly between vehicles travelling towards Alicante from Orihuela Costa. The number of vehicles using the road is estimated to be around 40,000 a day. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE The carnival is coming NEWS: The councillor for security and emergencies has organised a day to raise awareness of what should be done in the event of an earthquake taking place in Torrevieja. On Friday 19th January ‘What to do before, during and after an earthquake’will be held in the Palacio de la Música at 7pm. The programme includes a number of experts who will speak on the subject. Associations and local organisations have been invited to attend who will be expected to disseminate the information in their own groups. Councillor Manzanares has explained that it is important for the local population to be aware. It is likely to be followed up by talks and workshops delivered in local schools and other associations. The intention is to ensure that as many people as possible are aware of what they should do if an earthquake did occur. The programme includes: - the risk in the Vega Baja, yesterday and today - an evacuation plan – what to do before the earthquake - during the earthquake - the town’s plan for evacuation in the case of an earthquake – including what should be done after the earthquake and security for the population The Vega Baja is one of the parts of Spain that is most at risk of experiencing an earthquake. Small tremors are not unusual in the area and being prepared for the possibility is important. Continued on page 5

February, one of the coldest months in the Torreviejan calendar, still seems a strange month in which to hold a carnival. This tradition is believed to represent the last opportunity to throw a party before lent. It continues to attract many participants and onlookers during what can be a drab part of the year. Although the carnival is perhaps best known for the lively and colourful parades, these are in fact the final events in what includes a number of other lively gatherings. This year, activities begin on Saturday 27th January with the presentation and coronation of the carnival queens. This takes place in the international auditorium at 8.30pm. It’s a glamorous event with past queens and their new replacements making a grand appearance. Friday 2nd February sees the 10th drag queen competition in Torrevieja. Again

Salt sales are up The cold weather this year in much of Spain and across Europe has triggered an increase in demand for salt. Good news for Torrevieja’s salt works. Altogether, those responsible for clearing the snow from the roads have asked fro 10,000 tonnes of salt. Many communities are asking for more following the collapse of the service in parts of the country during the last few weeks The business in charges of Torrevieja’s salt works has doubled its sales over the last week and has sent another 60,000 tonnes to the north of Europe. In this week alone, 5,000 tonnes of salt has left the depot in order to help on the country’s roads. It’s expected next week that a similar amount will be needed. Huge lorries, double the usual capacity, have been brought in to help with the transfer of the salt to different parts of Spain, specifically to keep roads open and safe. The salt conveyor belt has been working over time to take the salt out to waiting ships who distribute it all over Europe. This method of distribution is able to react to fluctuations in demand and provides a very responsive service. Salt is being shipped out in particular to the north of Europe and the British Isles. Usually salt leaves the plant at a pretty regular rate throughout the year at around three thousand tonnes
a week. It’s only at times like this that sales vary significantly. There was some concern about the plants ability to meet demand following the heavy rainfalls at the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017. These had severely reduced the salt producing capacity of the lake. However, the salt company assures us that it is has recovered and expects to finish the year with a production of 450,000 tonnes of salt. In Spain, much of the country has been covered in snow over the past few days and there has been concern about the way in which the emergency on the roads was handled. With drivers stuck in their cars, sometimes over night, there have been calls for the sacking of the person responsible for traffic management during periods of snowfall. As a result of the sudden emergency, many communities have chosen to increase their reserves just in case they should also have heavier snowfall than normal. Salt was desperately needed across the country including Ávila and Segovia, a large part of Guadalajara, Soria and the north of Madrid. Area of Cuenca and Teruel and in all mountainous areas the demand for salt was high. With temperatures unlikely to increase in the near future the demand is expected to continue. Suzanne O’Connell

Oslo tourism fair The town council are keen to spread the word about Torrevieja and attending tourism fairs is one of the ways that they have been doing this. Over the weekend of the 13th December council representatives attended the fair in Oslo, Norway for the second time. According to councillor Fanny Serrano, 40,000 people passed through the exhibition over the course of the three days and interest in Torrevieja was spectacular. People particularly appreciated having material written in their own language as the material that they took was translated into Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish and English. Interest in travelling to Torrevieja has been increasing in Norway and the town has been promoting the attractions of Torrevieja including its appeal to ornithologists. Although it is primarily the climate that is of interest to Scandinavians, they are also keen to know more about what there is in the area generally.
in the salt lake Bathing in the salt lake is officially prohibited although many people practise it. Now there are moves to seal off the area where the salt extraction machinery is located. However, the company is aware that covering yourself in mud and bathing in the salt water is a common practice in the lake and is establishing an area that can be used for this purpose. The area being prepared for the public is only 40 metres long and five metres wide. In this area of 200 square metres the public will be allowed to bathe. The rest of the lake is officially out of bounds and people bathing there could be subject to fines if they are caught. The area is separated off by some wooden posts secured in concrete. Many people enjoy bathing in the salt water not only for the supposedly therapeutic affect of the mud but also for the sensation of floating on the water which is warm for much of the year. The lake is also famous for its pink hue which makes it distinctive for miles around.
anyone is in its way. The decision to restrict access was made by the salt works and those responsible for the natural park. Both groups have responsibility for the area that is in fact both an industrial site as well as an area of natural beauty. The police will try to monitor compliance with the new restrictions and notices have been placed around thelake advising people of them. In some respects it is a shame that the huge demand that there is for this facility cannot be used in some way to improve the experience for bathers whilst also protecting the environment. Currently, there is a large amount of rubbish that is left in the area. Plastic bottles, in particular, are often left by the lakeside. These tend to have been used as containers of fresh water for bathers to clean off the mud. Bins are being erected in the area to try and reduce the amount of rubbish. At one point, plans were in place to make use of the popularity of the lake for bathing. The Japanese architect Toyo Ito designed a structure to be used as a spa
The measures to restrict the area for bathing are being taken following a close call when two bathers were too close for comfort to the salt extraction machinery. The ‘volvedora’ is responsible for scraping the bottom of the lake and removing the salt from there. It moves very slowly but it is controlled from further away so it is not possible for the operator to see clearly if
for this purpose. The construction was partly carried out but stopped abruptly when it was discovered that it could not be licensed as the shores of the lake come under Costas law. Since then the structure has remained as an eyesore and has also been the source of vandalism and fires over the years. Suzanne O’Connell
Owl collides with power cable An eagle owl was found electrocuted after colliding with a high-voltage power line. This kind of accident is becoming increasingly regular and is being linked to the increase in the number of high-voltage cables used to supply power to the Torrevieja desalination plant. This eagle was found next to La Pedrera reservoir and is one of an increasing number who have been electrocuted around the area. The birds of prey inhabit a natural area of the Sierra Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor which is waiting to be declared a natural park. There is a high mortality rate amongst the birds here due to collision with the lines and electrocution. Providing power to the Torrevieja desalination plant is being blamed as one of the reasons for the increased death rate. Concerns have been raised about the cables, partly due to the threat to the birds but also due to their appearance on the skyline in an area of natural beauty.

Local police unhappy BITE SIZE NEWS: The Local Police in Torrevieja are threatening to stage a protest over the organisation of shifts in the town.
Their union is asking for the town hall to take action when it comes to the way in which the shifts are organised and decisions are made about those left in charge during the afternoon and evening shifts. Their concern is that there are no higher-ranked police officers on duty during some of these times; leaving responsibility delegated to the longest serving police officer. The allegation is that those in charge select the better shifts for themselves leaving the less attractive afternoon and evening shifts to those of a lower rank. The union wants to see more town hall intervention to ensure that the
current situation is addressed.
Policing of the three kings parade
Thirteen volunteers were brought in to help police the Cabalgata de Reyes or three kings procession on 5th January. This year it was difficult to secure the number of ordinary officers necessary to police the parade, which takes around six hours. Threats of terrorism during the last two years have increased the requirements for heightened security. The Local Police are stationed around the town where the roads intersect to stop traffic and oversee the safety of participants and onlookers. Difficulties policing the cabalgata were alleged to be the result of a failure to secure payment for the overtime that police officers have worked previously. For example, it is claimed that they are still owed money for policing La Vuelta 2015 cycle race. Suzanne O’Connell

own, one-woman campaign to clean up Torrevieja. Susanne (49) has been concentrating on collecting rubbish around the roads in the area during her stay with her mother-in-law. Equipped with litter pickers and a plastic bag, her presence has been noted by a number of drivers on the road that leads from Torrevieja hospital to Los Balcones. Susanne has already collected hundreds of kilos of rubbish in the last 15 days. When asked why she has started this personal crusade she explains that she cannot understand why this beautiful landscape with its sun and lagunas is so full of‘crap’and no one cares. ‘I feel like I have to do something for a place that I love so much’. Spending her holidays with her mother-inlaw she went to the Chinese shop and bought the litter pickers. Since then she has collected every type of rubbish imaginable but particularly paper, plastic and bottles. She has been dismayed by the number of cigarette butts she’s collected. Susanne is horrified that so many drivers seem to use the area as a large ashtray. Since Christmas she has spent several hours a day collecting the rubbish. In an attempt to extend her one-woman crusade, Susanne asked her husband to approach the town hall and find out if something could be done officially to tidy up the sides of the road. However, her husband has recognised perhaps the futility of this. Not to be dissuaded, Susanne will continue and has set herself quite a challenge for the foreseeable future. Suzanne O’Connell

LOTS OF CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR SPANGLES CHORUS Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus love to get into the festive spirit and revealed that the Christmas period of 2017 was another exceptional season for the ladies, who have been raising charity funds in several venues. “This has been our busiest year yet for requests to sing at people’s Christmas celebrations” said Wendy Grant, Chorus Musical Director. The holiday season started with three events – the first at the Spanglish Bar in Balsicas, with the ladies helping turn on the Christmas lights. This was swiftly followed by a Christmas Fair at the Iceland in San Javier, raising money for APAH animal rescue charity and a Singout the following day at La Zenia Boulevard, supporting the Pink Ladies’ Santa Walk, raising money for the AECC. Four days later, they were singing at the Nosmo King function at the Restaurante Paraiso, Torrevieja. Spangles held their traditional Christmas Concert at Las Claras in Los Alcázares on 8 December. “Our favourite Christmas singout was yet to come” commented Lyn Baines, Co-Chorus Manager. “We were delighted to sing for the residents and staff of the Residencia Lozar in Pozo Aledo. They always give us a warm welcome and it’s a pleasure to sing for them each year.” They had their traditional Christmas lunch on 14 December, but it wasn’t over! They had been invited back to the C Breeze Cocktail Bar in Playa Flamenca to help raise funds for charity. They raised €200 and nominated Los Hermanitos Children’s Home in Altea and Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters to receive €100each. The children wanted a new TV and it was plain that €100 would not be enough, so the chorus members rallied round and chipped in. Wendy and Lyn went to Altea on 6 January to present them with their new TV, much to the delight of everyone. 2018 looks like being another busy year for Spangles who will be straight back into rehearsals at Las Claras, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares in January, as
they get ready to compete in the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers’ (SABS) national chorus contest in April. Are you looking for a New Year resolution? Want to meet new people? Sing a bit? Fancy joining this champion chorus? Spangles always welcomes new members and it’s a great way to make new friends, so why not visit when they rehearse at Las Claras from January onwards? The group meets every Thursday from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm.

Construction licences are up According to official statistics, the construction industry is busy in Torrevieja. The town hall has authorised the building of 730 new houses in the town which already has 160,000 properties. In 2016 the number of new houses was 502. The town also registered a total of 4,700 conveyancing transactions – either buying or selling of property. The numbers might not reach those recorded in the boom years of 2007 but they do represent a significant upturn, particularly in comparison to the low numbers of 2010, 2011 and 2013 which fell to 200 new builds a year. Councillor Fanny Serrano has revealed the figures explaining that most of the new building is taking place in the area known as La Coronelita, AguasNuevas and along the Avenida de los Escorpiones as well as building which is to take place in Punta Prima, on the edge of the border with Orihuela Costa. The conveyancing figures are established from counting up the number of first and second occupation licences that have been issued. In 2015 only 3,524 were requested, in 2016 there were 4,231 and in 2017 it rose to 4,700. An indication of there being more activity in the estate agents with people buying and selling their homes. The occupation licence is needed to demonstrate that the building complies with health and safety regulations. The majority of those provided in 2017 (4,000) are occupation licences for resale properties. This number is similar to what you would find in large cities across Spain with around 300,000 inhabitants, such as Malaga or Zaragoza. In spite of the lack of land now available for developmental purposes, Councillor Serrano is keen to emphasise that there is plenty of opportunity for the construction industry in relation to the lively resale market. ‘Some properties are changing hands as often as twice a year,’ explains the councillor. The only remaining urban land is now around the area of La Hoya where there is capacity for 7,000 properties A new development that many people will have their eyes on is that of the tower block planned for the area by Acequion beach. The construction company, Baraka, is due to build a hotel along with apartments next to the beach. The licence for work to take place has still to be
officially authorised, but it does look as though the building will go ahead. In addition, many people have been

SCHOOL REPAIRS – NOT VALUE FOR MONEY The firm which currently repairs and maintains the school building stock in Torrevieja is currently being challenged to show that it is providing value for money. So far this school year, it has cost the town €134,000. However, there are allegations that the firm did not comply with all the requirements in the contract during April, May, June and July 2017. One example of this is in May when incident reports were requested from the management that outlines what has been reported and what and how it has been dealt with. The councillor for education, José Hurtado, has announced that some of the people in charge in different schools have made registered complaints that some of the planned maintenance work and repairs had not been carried out. In some cases they reported that the work done had not been sufficient or was inadequate. Altogether 265 tasks have been sent to the company to do in different schools. As reports came back that the work was unsatisfactory or missing completely, the paperwork to support or challenge this has been asked for. However, the company has not been able to provide the evidence needed. As a result of this, there will be greater monitoring on a dayto-day basis and, if necessary, another company can be asked to do the work. Suzanne O’Connell

Repair works on MABS to open Respite La Glea beach complete Care Centre The Town Hall of Orihuela announced that it has completed the restoration works on the fence at La Glea beach. The city councillor for the environment, Miguel Ángel Fernández, and the city councillor for beaches and coordinated services on the coast, Luisa Boné, this week went to inspect repair work to the wooden fence on Playa La Glea. Councillor Fernández said "This repair was necessary, because the previous fence was in a very bad condition and worsened by the course of time and the recent storms, which of course also causes the sand dune to decay and thus the loss of sand." In this sense, the Councillor remarked that the new fence fulfils "its function in that pedestrians cannot enter the protected area and thus contribute to the preservation of the dune".
Councillor Boné for her part said that "the dunes are the best defence against storms that erode the coast, and so it is important that we keep them in the best possible condition. If we allow further decay, we could risk a progressive process of loss of sand which also provokes environmental damage caused by the reduction of the flora and fauna of this area." The work consisted of the renovation and installation of a fence covering the entire circumference of the dunes (2010 linear metres), with a wooden fence made of round timber, a material that respects the environment. This project cost €12,075 including VAT.
In late 2017 MABS Cancer Support Group was granted Foundation status by the Spanish Authorities, this is a great achievement and its members are all exceptionally proud of this. The groups is now known as MABS Cancer Support Fundacíon CIF G54982681. A spokesperson for MABS told the Costa Blanca People, “Becoming a Foundation means we are able to grow and further expand our regular services; undertake new ventures and explore new opportunities. So we can now proudly announce that MABS Cancer Support Fundacíon (Costa Calida) have been able to purchase a property which will soon be converted into our first Respite Care Centre.” Situated on Camposol, the Centre is being funded jointly by MABS groups in San Javier; Calasparra and Mazarron. Donations and support from members of the public have made this possible and MABS asked the Costa Blanca People to extend its thanks to each and every one of our readers who has donated to or purchased from the group’s Charity Shops and Markets. The Centre will support cancer patients from all corners of the Costa Calida area – La Manga, San Javier, Los Alcazares, Totana, Alhama de Murcia, Puerto de Mazarron, Mazarron, Calasparra, Pinoso and anywhere in
between irrespective of their nationality or age. MABS have made great progress so far but there is a lot of work to do before the centre open and the Foundation still needs some help in various areas: MABS told us... • We need help to make the Gardens pleasant including a patio area so our residents can enjoy the fresh air • We need help to Paint and Decorate the inside and outside of the property when the builders have finished. • We need A/C units for each room – four would be ideal • We need showers, tiles, WCs and basins for our soon to be created en-suites • We need bed linens and towels • We need curtains and blinds • We need Internet connection and IPTV so our residents can enjoy their favourite TV programmes
Can you help MABS with any of these things? If so please get in touch via the Facebook pages or email MABS at finance@mabscancersupportfoundation. com / mabsmmcoordinator@outlook.com or call the Helplines on 620 422 410 or 693 275 779

New Year Swimmers take a dip for AECC How can youth Well done to the thirteen swimmers who took the plunge on New Year’s day at Playa Flamenca beach, raising money for Maria and the Pink Ladies/Panthers, AECC. For the fourth year running Eamon Reilly, the proprietor of The Blarneystone, Zeniamar, gathered together his staff and patrons to take part and help get the fundraising year off to a flying start. So far €1,133 has been raised, and with an ongoing raffle, all involved hope to reach €2,000 by the presentation night on the 27th January.
facilities be improved? The councillor for youth in Torrevieja, Víctor Ferrández is asking for suggestions for how the youth centre facilities can be improved in the future. Once the 2018 budget is finally approved, money has ben set aside to develop facilities for the town’s young people. The council are hoping to create a new youth facility; ‘La casa de la Juventud’.
New facilities that have already been requested in the youth centre include a rehearsal room for learning and practising music for both groups and soloists; a room for art and an area where youth groups and associations can meet. There are also plans for a leisure room including the necessary equipment. ‘Wewant the opinion of as many
A group is being formed to lead the discussion and will consist of young people between the ages of 18 and 35 who would like to participate. The group’s first meeting will be on 18th January at 6pm in the Centro de Información y Animación Juvenil (CIAJ). The councillor will take part in the meeting along with the University of Alicante representatives. There have already been some new events for young people in 2017 including ‘Alternative Fest’ and ‘Hackathon Torrevieja’ but there is still a long way to go to make the town a place that young people feel part of. Suggestions can also be made by email to juventud@torrevieja.eu or on whatsapp 606055291.
young people in the area as possible,’ says councillor Ferrández. ‘We want them to help us design the new youth facilities and indicate what resources they would like to see. We want the project to reflect what young people need and even the location is open to proposals.’ If you would like more information about this project you can also ask at the CIAJ building itself on paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio 5 or call 965714072. The construction of this new facility is still in the early stages and has yet to obtain the necessary licences and contracts. However, there is no doubt that Torrevieja’s young people would benefit from an injection of money and interest. Suzanne O’Connell
Age Concern celebrates three kings On Saturday 6th January Age Concern held their very own three kings party at their centre in Calle Paganini in La Siesta. The party was held in honour of 45 of the charity’s valued beneficiaries. A very special buffet tea was prepared by the staff of The Vestry in Algorfa and everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get together and be treated. The entertainment was provided by Jerry who got people singing and dancing to songs from the 1960s and 1970s. A raffle of a huge hamper of Christmas goods was supplied by the Age Concern Charity shop in Torrevieja. This was won by Margaret Dumbleton. Suzanne O’Connell

S.A.T. Rescuing animals for 25 years Twenty-five years ago there was little help for abandoned, sick or traumatised animals in this part of Spain, and many were left to run wild or die of starvation with no-one to defend them. Then in 1991 a group of ex-pats from a variety of European countries, some of whom were vets, set up the charitable organisation now known as S.A.T. Their first animal refuge in Los Balcones soon ran out of space, with more than 40 dogs very quickly arriving at their door in desperate need of help. Many had been working dogs, thrown out when no longer needed, as well as those who had become sick and in need of help that the owners couldn’t afford. Things have improved, but in those days S.A.T. was the main charity for animal rescue and they still continue their essential and wonderful work rescuing, spaying, healing and re-homing dozens of (mainly) dogs every year. In 1997, with the support of many charity events and fundraisers, a finca, owned by an elderly German lady, was found, and purchased in Dolores. The lady was doing her best to rescue animals, and already she was caring for 48 dogs and 60 cats. With a great deal of help from volunteers and money raised by supporters, the existing finca was refurbished and kennels built, and at that time it was decided that S.A.T. would major in taking in dogs, although many feral cats are still rescued and sterilised with funds from S.A.T. These days there are many other animal charities, but S.A.T. is still full to capacity and in desperate need of even more fund raising to keep going. Volunteers work very hard six days a week in the seven charity shops as well as
events including with the Fun Dog Show, and these provide the main source of income for the charity. It was decided at the inception of S.A.T. that they would adopt a policy of noneuthanasia unless animals were too sick to survive, and this policy still applies. All the dogs are loved and cared for by a small team of devoted staff and volunteers who do an amazing job of cleaning, walking and caring for them until they find their ‘forever home’. There is also a dedicated vet who with his compassion, energy and enthusiasm provides an exceptional service. If you wish to visit the kennels, with a view to adopting one or more of the dogs, S.A.T. is open daily (except Wednesday, when the vet is in-house) from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm, or if you would like to volunteer to help walk the dogs, please telephone 966 710 047 and leave a message. WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Theresa May’s Cabinet reshuffle could have had a big impact on the pound this week but in the end the results, which showed no major changes in key posts or in the Brexit department, meant that there was little impact. Having spent the morning of the announcement on the defensive in anticipation of change, sterling tended higher during the afternoon. Perhaps significantly, the pound held its position against the US dollar just above $1.35 even though the euro retreated from resistance at $1.20-21. Later in the week, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Secretary for Exiting the European Union visited Berlin for the DieWelt Economic Summit. Their arrival coincided with a welter of press comment about the obstacles to a quick and easy all-embracing trade deal. Germany's Chancellor Merkel was said to be among those opposed to giving Britain something for nothing. Broadly negative Brexit news coverage rather spoiled the effect of some good manufacturing and industrial production data: both increased by a monthly 0.4% The beginning of the week saw investors mark down the euro despite above-forecast €Z ecostats. The euro was down by an average of 0.4% against the other dozen most actively traded currencies by close of business on Monday. The only slight negative was a 0.4% monthly decline in factory orders from Germany, but this is against a backdrop of an 8.7% annual increase. The rest of the figures were positive; retail sales were up by 1.5% and 2.8% on the month and the year. Every one of the half dozen confidence measures from
Sentix and the EC either beat or matched expectations. It’s been a slightly tricky week for the US dollar. There was a drop following a report that China might cut back or end its purchase of US treasury bonds. It dropped a swift half-cent on the "news" before, eventually, regaining the lost ground when it transpired that the report from news agency Bloomberg might have stemmed from an unreliable source. Looking to much firmer ground, the US retail sales and inflation figures released today will help shape expectations for Federal Reserve monetary policy in coming months. Reports that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is increasingly convinced President Donald Trump wants to abandon the North American Free Trade Agreement meant that the Loonie dropped midweek and has yet to fully recover. Much relies on the Bank of Canada announcement next week. If there is no change, or there is a dovish tone to the announcement, it could prove a negative for the Canadian dollar as the next round of NAFTA negotiations gets underway. Australia had a better week; retail sales went up by 1.2% in November, three times the expected increase. Investors had no option but to mark up the Australian dollar following the midweek results. It was generally all positive news down under; The New Zealand dollar was heading for a 1.2% weekly gain today as it pushed higher against the US dollar. It is thought that the kiwi has benefited from the weaker dollar and from the more upbeat sentiment around global growth.

Bush beans, also called snap beans because they “snap” when ripe, are by far the most popular home grown beans. Tender, with a delicate taste and no strings, they are easy to grow and cook - and delicious to eat!
T
here are many varieties of bush beans to choose from. They can be green, yellow, or purple and come in all kinds of shapes and sizes so you can add a variety of textures and colour to your dinner plate. Bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are easy to plant and they do not need any time consuming staking, trellising, or poling because they grow on compact, sturdy plants. They grow well even in poor soil, and have readyto-eat pods in only seven or eight weeks. And by staggering planting times by a few weeks you can have a continuous bean production all summer/ autumn long. Below you will find 10 tips that are guaranteed to bring you the best, tastiest, and most productive bush bean crop ever:
It is a good insurance to give your seeds to ensure they grow the best they can. Even if your soil already has plenty of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria, adding some inoculant is never going to hurt anything. 3. Water properly Bush beans like a regular supply of water. That said however, beans do not like wet, or poorly drained soil. In order to make sure the soil drains well, and your beans do not rot, add plenty of organic matter such as compost before planting. Give the beans regular water, and allow the plants
1. Wait for warm weather Beans like warm soil, so for best germi-nation when sowing your seeds, wait until the soil temperatures are warmer than 16°C (60°F). If you plant the seeds in cold soil, the beans will germinate very slowly leaving them vulnerable to rot and soil-borne diseases. 2. Prepare bean seeds for planting Soak them: For extra fast germination, soak the seeds in water for 30 minutes before planting, or put the seeds between two damp paper towels the night before planting. By the next day, the seeds will be swollen and ready to germinate. Inoculate them: Beans are like peas and other “nitrogen-fixing” legumes in that beans can pull nitrogen right out of the air because soil-dwelling bacteria forms nodules on their roots. But this can happen only if the soil naturally has this helpful bacteria. If the soil has no such bacteria, your beans will not do as well. So take a few minutes before you plant your seeds and inoculate them by coating them with a powdered form of rhizobium bacteria.
to dry out a bit in between waterings. The only time you want the soil to be constantly damp is right after you have sown the seeds. Watering the seeds: When sowing in the spring, sow the seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep; in the hot weather of summer, sow the seeds 2 inches (5 cm) deep. Then soak the seed bed thoroughly with water, and try not to water again until the beans sprout so that the soil does not become soggy or waterlogged. If your soil tends to dry out quickly, or
to form a crust, cover the seed bed with a very thin layer of mulch or compost after you plant to keep the soil surface moist and soft. This helps the bean’s growing tip from breaking off as it pushes though the soil. If your soil dries out even with the mulch, do water again. Always keep sown seed beds damp. If they dry out, the seeds will die. 4. Plant bush beans very close together Bush beans do not mind being crowded and will still produce a good crop. The best reason for planting them fairly close together is you want the leaves of the plants to grow into a shade canopy that will cool the soil and stop weeds from growing. Plant bean seeds in “blocks” or rows 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) apart and do not thin when they come up. 5. Make sure to rotate Try not to grow beans in the same garden bed two years in a row because they are susceptible to several soil-borne dis-eases. Rotating your crops will help prevent a build up of these diseases at each location. 6. Keep bush beans weeded Snap beans have very shallow roots that cannot compete with weeds for water and nutrients, so try and keep your beans well weeded. Remember however, that bean roots grow very close to the soil surface, so be careful when weeding that you do not pull the bean plants out along with the weeds if you have allowed the weeds to get too large.
7. Bush beans like mulch Especially here where summers are hot and dry, mulch your beans to help keep the moisture in the soil. 8. Bush beans do not like super high heat Beans will stop produc-ing about a week after any hot spell that is over 32°C (90°F). To avoid this, either cover your bush beans with shade cloth struc-tures to help them weather through or plant early in the spring, or towards the end of summer to miss most of the high heat days. 9. Stagger your planting Because bush beans tend to produce their beans all at once, harvest will only last about 2 weeks. By staggering your planting, it will help keep a steady supply of beans throughout the summer. 10. Keep bush beans picked Regular harvesting is the number one way to guarantee a prolonged bean harvest. You should pick your beans at least every other day, and you should pick your beans before their pods swell and fill up with seeds. When the seeds finish forming inside the pods, it sends a signal to the plant to stop growing, which is something you do not want, so keep those beans picked. Also, when beans pods get too big, they are not as tender and tasty as when they are young. Whether you call them string beans, snap beans, green beans, or bush beans, they are one of the most favoured vegetables for gardeners to grow during the summer months. They have high quality flavour, and last a long time once harvested, making them easy to handle and cook with. By following the above tips you will have even more success with your beans and that simply means more for you to eat and enjoy! Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO PUNTA CANA
with Vivalia Travel
Punta Cana is a resort town within the Punta Cana-BávaroVeron-Macao municipal district, in the municipality of Higüey, in La Altagracia Province, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic. The area has beaches and balnearios which face both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and it has been a popular tourist destination. The Punta Cana area has an estimated population of 50,000, with an annual growth rate of 6%. To the north, it borders the
village and beach of Cabeza de Toro, and the Bávaro and El Cortecito beaches. The nearest city, the 500-year-old Higüey, is 45 kilometres away, which takes about an hour to reach by car. European entrepreneurs, particularly Spanish hotel chains, own all but two of the over 50 megaresorts at the Punta Cana tourism destination. The province’s 100-kilometre coastline tends to be mildly windy. The ocean waters are
mainly shallows, with several natural marine pools in which visitors can bathe without danger. From north to south, the main beaches are Uvero Alto, Macao, Arena Gorda, Bávaro, El Cortecito, Las Corales and Cabeza de Toro, all north of the cape; and Cabo Engaño, Punta Cana and Juanillo south of the cape. Bávaro is the area starting from Cabeza de Toro until Macao Beach. As the hotels started to rise along the East coast, Bavaro itself became a center of services with shopping malls, fast-food stores, drug stores, fine restaurants, banks, clinics, workshops, supermarkets, and schools. The major town in the district is Veron, now bigger than Higüey in territory, a spontaneous – and poor – urban development running along the original road from the west. Verón, last name of the French proprietor of a timberline business in the early 1930s, is now the base-city for hotel workers and related. It has, besides Bávaro, one of the only four gas stations in Punta Cana. The very next is located 48 kilometres west in Higüey Punta Cana features a tropical wet and dry climate under the Köppen climate classification. The weather is fairly consistent all year, with an average temperature of 26 °C (79 °F). The hot and humid season
lasts from May to October, and during the day temperatures might reach 35 °C (95 °F). From November to March, temperatures during the evening are around 20 °C (68 °F). Very little rain falls around the area, primarily because of the mostly flat landscape, a combination of savanna and mountains. Punta Cana is a popular tourist destination. The area is a key contributor to the tourism industry in the Dominican Republic. As a beach destination, many of the popular excursions in Punta Cana are near the water. These activities include snorkeling, windsurfing, banana boat rides, speedboats, scuba diving, catamaran cruises, party boats, deep sea fishing, as well as swimming with dolphins and sharks and stingrays snorkeling. Visitors that prefer to see more of the Dominican country side, there are land based excursions such as safari tours, horse back ridding and dune buggy. Visiting the Dominican Republic's smaller Caribbean Island of Saona and Catalina, is a day trip from Punta Cana. The capital city Santo Domingo, and Los Haitises National Park, Samaná, are within a couple of hours. The Basilica Catholic Monument, built in 1962 and designed by two French architects, is in nearby Higüey, the 500-year-old capital of the Province.

Change of heart
Is it wrong to feel relief? My husband had a heart attack recently and died. Very few people knew that he was a very cruel, tyrant of a man, and I never told his family. I have to be honest and tell someone that I am not sad or grieving at all. Far from it; privately I am relieved that I am not suffering daily physical and mental abuse. We’ve had the funeral and I couldn’t cry. His family have got on to me about not showing grief at his passing. I would feel like a hypocrite if I said I was sorry he’d gone. I feel I am now free and have a new lease on life.
Recently I inherited a very large sum of money from my Uncle. The money is life-changing. It’s given me choices; I can retire early, and also I think I want to give some thought to my relationship with my husband. Our marriage has been limping along for a few years. The children have left home. I am lonely and want another chance at love. My husband has designs on the money and has plans of how we would spend it - some of it on him personally and his own pursuits. I am feeling quite resentful as this is my money, and I don‘t see why I should let him have some if things aren’t going to change.
If you can see a better, happier life for yourself separated from your husband then you must firstly go and see your Solicitor. However, having inherited this large sum, it may mean having to settle with him financially. Couples counselling would help you work through the issues in your marriage. You need to talk to each other. If you can patch up your marriage then you can both enjoy the money together.
I think it is understandable that you feel the way you do. I would keep your feelings to yourself with regard to his family though. Tell them that you grieve privately, and in your own way. Everyone is different. It won’t be a lie, in fact I consider that you ARE grieving - for lost years sticking by your husband when perhaps you should have left? Time to think about yourself now, and getting well. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. Women should sleep on side to prevent stillbirth The parents of a stillborn baby have released a picture of their son to help highlight new research that shows pregnant women can halve the risk of stillbirth simply by going to sleep in the correct position. Hayley and Adam Powsney, from Bury, Greater Manchester, hope that the image of baby Joshua will help draw attention to the
Stillbirth is 15 times more common than cot death and Britain has one of the worst records in the developed world. Researchers say the results of the latest study could potentially save 100,000 babies a year if the risk was eliminated internationally. The work was carried out by Tommy's
findings and underline the heartache that stillbirth brings. "He died in the delivery process," Mrs Powsney told Sky News. "That changes you completely as a person." She added: "From the moment they told me there was nothing more they could do my world just collapsed. I had my baby in my arms and he didn't cry. There's nothing that can prepare you for that." In the largest study to examine maternal sleep and stillbirth, scientists assessed more than 1,000 pregnant women.
Stillbirth Research Centre in Manchester. The centre's clinical director, Professor Alex Heazell, said: "Around 11 babies are stillborn every day in the UK. "Stillbirth is devastating with long-lasting effects on bereaved parents. Parents want to know why their baby has died, whether it might happen again if they try for another baby and what they can do to avoid further stillbirth." A public health campaign has been launched to accompany the publication of the results.
The "Sleep on Side" campaign aims to educate women about the risk of going to sleep on their back in late pregnancy. It includes a video showing how a mother-tobe should lie when nodding off. The advice applies to sleep in the third trimester (after 28 weeks) including: • Going to sleep at night • Returning to sleep after night awakenings • Daytime naps As the going-to-sleep position is the one held longest during the night, women shouldn't be worried if they wake up on their back but should simply roll over onto their side. Although researchers can't say for certain why the risk is increased, there are several theories. In the third trimester, when the woman is lying on her back, the combined weight of baby and uterus (womb) puts pressure on the main blood vessels that supply the uterus, and this can restrict blood flow/oxygen to the baby. Other possible explanations include disturbed breathing during sleep, which is worse when a woman sleeps on her back and in overweight or obese women, who also have an increased risk of stillbirth. The advice is being supported by the Powsneys, who went on to have two healthy babies. "We want Joshua's life to mean something," said Mr Powsney. "Our oldest child is now two-and-a-half. We're going to explain to her that she had an older brother. If we can help Tommy's Research Centre his life will mean something."

When is the best time to buy a home? Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!
Are you thinking of buying your dream home here in sunny Spain, but unsure when is the best time to invest? Stop thinking about it, and do it now! To be honest, no-one knows when the best time to buy is, until it’s passed, but the way the housing market finished in 2017, means property prices will start to increase this year. The data for the final quarter of 2017, showed an average price increase in Spain of 4.2%, reaching €1,264 per square metre, according to the provisional statistics of Tinsa IMIE. Navarra and Madrid experienced the biggest increases of 15.3% and 15.1%, respectively. The Autonomous Communities, registered the highest increases of average house prices that completed in the fourth quarter of 2017. They were ahead of Catalonia, with an 8.9% increase. The Balearic Islands, showed an increase of 7.5%. The Community of Madrid remained the region with the highest average value of housing at €2,082 per square metre, ahead of the Balearic Islands, at €2,023. The Basque Country, at €1,992 and Catalonia, at €1,770. The greatest drops in prices in the last quarter of 2017 were registered in Castilla La Mancha, with a decrease of 54.7%. In La Rioja 53.5%, and in Aragón, a drop of 50.1%.
Provincial capitals like Barcelona, experienced a 1.7% price drop between the third and fourth quarters of 2017, to 14.8%. While in Madrid, prices increased in this period by 17.1%, compared to the last quarter of the 2016. The price of housing here in the Valencian Community grew by 6% in the fourth quarter of 2017, compared to the same time in 2016. The average price per square metre in the Community, is
€1,020. The number of sales transactions during the previous quarter was 16% more than in the same period of 2016, according to the Gesvalt Housing Report of the fourth quarter of the year. So you see, with a 16% increase in property sales, just in the last quarter of 2017 alone, will encourage prices to increase. If you’re out looking for an investment in this beautiful part of Spain, there’s no better time than the present to make your dream a reality! Nine terror attacks prevented in UK in past year, MI5 reveals A total of nine terrorist attacks have been prevented in the UK in the past year, MI5 has said. The department had previously said that 13 terror attacks had been prevented in the past four years. The director general of the UK's domestic security service, Andrew Parker, told the Cabinet of the number of prevented attacks this morning, according to Downing Street. Mr Parker told Theresa May that the defeat of Islamic State in Syria did not mean that the terrorist threat was over. He warned that social media was being used to incite terrorist attacks from afar. The numbers have been released ahead of the publication of an investigation into the internal reviews by the security services and police into a
wave of terror attacks in Britain this year. Attacks at Westminster Bridge, Manchester, London Bridge and Finsbury Park have prompted internal reviews by police and MI5.
September's attack at Parsons Green was not covered by the report. The reviews were to establish what intelligence the security services and police held on the attackers ahead of
time and identify whether improvements could be made in the way potential terrorists were managed. David Anderson QC, formerly the independent reviewer of terror legislation, was appointed by the government to provide "independent assurance" of these internal reviews. Mr Anderson submitted his classified report to the Home Secretary in October, and a version of his findings is to be published by the Government recently. Counter-terror investigators in the UK are estimated to be running 500 live investigations involving 3,000 individuals at any one time. However, there is considered to be a much wider pool of 20,000 "subjects of interest" who are continually being kept under review.

hold a debit card and make transfers. All accounts must make their holders aware of any commissions charged, and provide a comparison across banks via the Bank of Spain website. Although talks are under way about making basic accounts free of charge, 'reasonable' commissions will still be charged for the moment, according to the ministry for the economy. The legislation is a move to implement a European Directive into Spanish law within the timescale required by the EU. Also, the Council of Ministers has passed another law that requires large companies to provide public information about their corporate social responsibility, diversity among members of senior management and board of directors, environmental management, respect for human rights and the fight against corruption. Diversity policies must be revealed for all public limited companies, known as a Sociedad Anónima or S.A. in Spain, and all firms with more than 500 employees are required to reveal social, environmental, human rights and corporate social responsibility policies, plus details of their annual accounts audits. These corporations will be required to publish details of working conditions, equality, social dialogue, respect for union affiliation rights, health and safety at work, and local community protection.

Spain amongst worst performers in Europe on income equality First the good news: the Spanish economy is on the mend, unemployment is falling and the number of people at risk of poverty is coming down too. That’s according to the European Commission’s new Draft Joint Employment Report 2018. But despite the positives, the Commission’s report has also given Spain a failing grade when it comes to income equality, describing the situation as “critical” – that is, “much worse than average, and either not improving sufficiently fast or deteriorating further.” This places the country in a bottom group of poor performers that also includes Bulgaria, Lithuania and Greece. Across the whole 28-member bloc, the richest 20 per cent of the population had a disposable income that was around five times higher than that of the poorest 20 per cent in 2016, according to the Commission report. In Spain, however, this figure was slightly above six-and-ahalf times. And despite Spain’s economic recov-
ery – the national economy outperformed expectations to grow 3.2 per cent in 2016 – the Commission highlighted the fact that the country has yet to recover the equality levels seen before the crisis In total, a third of the countries in the EU have not recovered this pre-crisis equality level, according to the report, which analyzes 14 social indicators – from youth unemployment levels and the gender employment gap, to school dropout rates. “Recent gains in employment have not been evenly distributed among different population groups,” the report says of the EU as a whole. “The gap in employment rates between low-skilled and high-skilled workers is large (31 percentage points), underlining the need to invest in skills to better respond to changing labourmarket needs,” the report adds. “The persistence of relatively large income inequalities, often linked to unequal opportunities in access to
education, training and social protection, and reflecting poor labor market outcomes, raises concerns in terms of fairness, social inclusion and sustainable growth,” the report’s authors go on to say. In terms of the risk of poverty, Spain has improved its record in recent years but remains on the watch list. For employment, the country’s performance has been noted as “weak but improving, while the report notes that the number of “quasi-jobless” households remains a high 14.9 per cent. The Commission also criticises Madrid for the failure of the Spanish government’s poverty-reduction policies. Social transfers (“social assistance provided by public and civic bodies to those living in poverty or in danger of falling into poverty”) reduced monetary poverty by just 25 per cent in Spain, before taking pensions into account. That figure is too close to Bulgaria and Greece and a long way from
the 50 per cent seen in Nordic countries. The report calls on countries including Spain to introduce a raft of measures including improving the design of tax and benefit systems, ensuring access to quality healthcare and promoting gender equality. Spain’s school drop-out rate also comes in for criticism. At 19 per cent, this is a long way from the 10.7 per cent EU average, while the number of young people who are neither working nor studying is at 15 per cent, four percentage points above the EU average. On the plus side of the ledger, Spain appears to have improved in terms of digital competencies and for compensation for hours worked. Spain also ranks well in terms of the number of children aged under three in formal childcare and in self-reported access to healthcare. Pension Struggle The European Commission report warns
that an ageing population “implies more pressure on younger generations – those same generations who experience also a more difficult access to stable, quality jobs – in order to guarantee sufficient revenues to the pension systems and ensure their sustainability.” Ageing societies will mean longer working lives and this will put pressure on the pensions system in future because of the longer periods worked. This has led Brussels to issue a warning on a possible lack of trust between generations and possible risks to the social contract, which states that pensions paid in today will be received in future. To reduce the threat, the European Commission says employment and productivity rates must be increased, while stressing the benefits of private pension funds. The report also notes that women are more likely to be affected on the pensions front as they interrupt their careers for childcare reasons.

Lost Spanish masterpiece found hanging in Welsh castle The 17th-century portrait of an austerelooking Spanish writer had hung in Penrhyn Castle for nearly 150 years, unvisited by art experts and assumed by the National Trust, which owns the castle, to be of no great value. That was until a recent visit by Benito Navarrete Prieto, a distinguished art scholar who made the journey from Seville to north Wales on a hunch that a painting assumed to be a copy might just be the real thing Now Prieto has established that the artwork was indeed a lost masterpiece by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, one of Spain’s great painters. The art world recently marvelled as Leonardo da Vinci’s 500-year-old depiction of Christ sold at auction for a record £341m. The restored Salvator Mundi had long been considered a copy but was reclassified as authentic. The discovery of a Murillo in Penrhyn Castle, near Bangor in north Wales, is not quite on the same scale. But it is a major event for European art: there are barely a dozen known portraits by the artist and those few that do exist are worth millions. “It is an absolute masterpiece,” Prieto said. “Magnetic.” Transported from Penrhyn, the portrait is the centrepiece of a major exhibition on the artist at the Frick Collection in New York, before transferring to the National Gallery in London in February. One of the US exhibition’s curators, Xavier F Salomon, said the discovery was hugely exciting, and that he regretted relying on previous judgments by other art historians. “Most scholars have written that there are two versions (of the portrait), both copies after a lost original.
One copy was in Seville, which I’ve seen and is clearly a copy,” he said. Painted around 1751, the copy is thought to have been commissioned by the sitter’s family when the original Murillo was sold. Now attributed to the 18th-century Sevillian painter Domingo Martínez, it hangs in Seville town hall. When it came to the Welsh example, Salomon said the literature featured “terrible old black and white photos”. He requested a colour image for his exhibition catalogue and featured it as a “copy”, even though he recalled his first impression was that “this looks really good”. “I thought ‘people have always said it’s a copy, it’s got to be a copy’; which is, of course, a mistake art historians should never make. Go with your gut feeling and you should follow up. I didn’t. “Benito went to Wales and realised how great the painting was and that everyone had been wrong in calling it a copy. The mistake made – by myself included – is just that no one bothered to go there, and everyone kept repeating that it was a copy. It was hidden in plain sight. It’s not coming out of a location that’s unknown. The house was open to the public.” The painting was among old masters collected in the mid- to late-19th century by Baron Penrhyn for his neo-gothic pile. Today, the castle’s collection includes paintings, furniture and books. The Murillo was attributed to the artist when it was acquired in the 1870s, but by 1901 it had been downgraded. Frantic Describing it as exceptional, Salomon said: “It’s difficult to add a painting to an
exhibition that’s already opened but I literally found out about this painting on a Friday and the exhibition was opening on that Monday. There was an insane weekend – I started calling everyone in Wales and Spain to find out more. I hadn’t seen it and I wanted to be sure it was absolutely right ... The picture arrived here and we hung it. It’s absolutely fantastic.” Murillo worked primarily in Seville until his death in 1682, aged 64. Among his masterpieces are paintings for the city’s convent of San Francisco and for the church of the Caridad, including Christ Healing the Paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda, now in the National Gallery. Such was Murillo’s prestige that, at one point, the King of Spain refused to allow them to be exported. In July, Sotheby’s in London sold his Ecce Homo – a painting of Christ wearing the crown of thorns – for £2.75m. James Macdonald, the senior director of old master paintings at the auction house, said he had sold works by the artist privately for substantially more. He described the rediscovered painting as striking and added: “The emergence of this fine portrait of one of the most important cultural figures in Seville represents an important addition to the artist’s oeuvre.” Murillo is admired for his ability to bring out the character of his sitters. The rediscovered portrait depicts Don Diego Ortiz de Zúñiga, who wrote a history of Seville. Dressed in black with the insignia of the Order of Santiago, he is set within a stone cartouche supported by two cherubs. The oil on canvas measures 113cm
by 94cm. Its qualities were concealed beneath a layer of discoloured varnish that has been removed.
The exhibition at the Frick runs until 4 February 2018 and will then transfer to the National Gallery in London.

New cat species discovered
Jail time sought for moped driver
A species of cat living wild in Madrid over 10,000 years ago has been discovered in an archaeological dig in Madrid. The Leptofelis Vallesiensis, as the excavation team have baptised it, would have lived fairly close to humans at around the time cats as we know them today are thought to have domesticated themselves to make sure they always had a source of food. They largely resembled the mountain cat which still lives wild in parts of Spain today. The National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN), in conjunction with the High Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) and Madrid’s Alcalá University (UAH) made the discovery at the Cerro de los Batallones archaeological site in Torrejón de Velasco, near the capital, where it was recently reported that fossils from the earliest and short-necked species of giraffe had been found. According to the historians, the 10,000-year-old cat would have been slim and lithe, but weighing between seven and nine kilos – compared with a typical, normal-weight domestic cat’s 4.5 to five kilos – meaning they are likely to have been longer and taller than the fourlegged friends who occupy an estimated 30% of human homes in the western
The public prosecutor has asked for four years in jail for the boyfriend of a young woman who lost her life in a crash near Alicante’s Plaza del Mar. The incident, which occurred in January 2013, is being examined in court this month and the driver appeared in Alicante Criminal Court for sentencing this week. The man is being accused of homicide due to imprudence as he tested positive for alcohol and cannabis at the scene. The man had also had his licence revoked after losing all his penalty points, it has emerged. The incident occurred at around 6am on January 20th 2013 when a tow truck was about to remove a crashed vehicle from blocking the tram tracks next to Plaza del Mar. A pedestrian was, at that moment, crossing the pedestrian crossing although the pedestrian light was red. According to officers investigating the incident, the motorcycle was coming from the direction of the Meliá hotel. The pedestrian, on seeing the motorcycle approach and realising it was not
world. The Leptofelis was able to jump to staggering heights to enable it to hunt, and had numerous features in common with today’s family pets, although also primitive aspects which have now been bred out. Their front paws were much the same as modern felines, but their back legs – on their femurs, ankles and hips – had bony outcrops supporting the quadratus plantae, a muscle in the base of the paw. This muscle was also much larger, showing how the cats’ impulsion was vastly superior, giving it far greater jumping and climbing skills, enabling it to catch birds in flight and make great bounds when escaping, literally taking off from the ground like African lynx still do today. They were also able to move much faster due to their muscular structure and extra-flexible elbow joints, a skill essential for escaping predators. And according to the Cerro de los Batallones team, these latest findings are only the tip of the iceberg: they are now studying skeletons of an even larger wild cat similar to the Leptofelis, details of which they promise to reveal very soon.
slowing down, stood frozen to the spot. The accused decided to pass between the pedestrian and the grua truck. The victim (20), who was riding pillion on the moped hit the pedestrian, who fell to the ground. The girl was flung under the tow truck just as the driver was reversing and died at the scene, despite attempts by ambulance workers to revive her. The driver of the moped was also seriously injured in the accident and was taken to Alicante General Hospital. In court this week, the defendant denied being drunk at the time of the accident. According to his version of events, he had a beer a number of hours before and did not smoke cannabis. He also said that as a consequence of the blow to the head, he had ‘gaps’ in his memory and he did not remember anything about how the accident came about. He also refused to acknowledge that his drivers licence points had been withdrawn. His defence lawyer has challenged the results of the drug and alcohol analysis, alleging a ‘lack of guarantee’ in the chain

of custody of the report. The lawyer claims that conclusive data is not available. An officer from the National Police also made a statement before the court this week, explaining that he had come to the port area in the early houses of the morning on the date of the incident. The officer claimed he was called to the area because of reports of a fight between a couple. “When we arrived we saw them arguing and when we went to identify them, they left quickly on the motorcycle,” he said. He added that when he heard a collision moments later, he knew instinctively that it was the couple in question. He also said that some witnesses had told him that the suspect had been causing a nuisance during the night with the way he was driving his moped. Local police reports show that the moped skipped two traffic lights and travelled with excess speed. However, at the point of the accident, his speed was adequate to that of the road and the traffic light was green in his favour. The defense argued that the facts would constitute an offense of driving without a license, for which the payment of a fine is demanded.

€240K for cliff repairs The City Council for Beaches is investing €240,000 to repair the cliffs of the Orihuela coast. The councillor for beaches, Luisa Boné, offered an update this week on the maintenance and strengthening works which were carried out on the during 2017 on the coast of Orihuela. The first measure, which has already been completed, was the work on the cliff in Cabo Roig, for an investment of € 187,000. A project that began in 2017 and ended the more than three-year closure of the beach promenade of Cala Capitán. The second phase started earlier this month on the cliffs of the beach at Aguamarina. Boné said, “When the technical services were informed about the existence of new rockfalls, in this case on the coast of Aguamarina, the City Council for Beaches drew up
a new contract to repair a section of the cliff that has been eroded mainly due to rainwater. We removed a part of the promenade, which represented a clear risk, both for those who walked along the promenade and for those who did it on the beach.” The city councillor noted that in December the obligatory approval of the Coastal Ministry was obtained in order to carry out the work. Boné also said that “the work will consist of cleaning the slope, building a brick wall to avoid continuous erosion by rainwater, and installing a protective net on both sides of the wall to prevent any possible rock fall to the beach.” This second project has a budget of €52,713.82 and the City Council for Beaches expects that this work will be completed in a few weeks.
Most Spaniards refuse to reform the Constitution to allow a referendum Six out of ten Spaniards (61.6 per cent) consider it necessary to reform the Constitution, but most of those who think this way (63.8 per cent) oppose that this change includes the possibility of holding a referendum on independence, according to a survey by Sigma Dos. The national survey that carried out 900 interviews also indicates that 68.5 per cent of respondents believe that the political parties will not be able to reach an agreement when it comes to modifying the Magna Carta, an opinion shared mostly by the voters of Unidos Podemos (81.2 per cent) and voters under 29 (84.1 per cent). Only 19 per cent of respondents trust that the political parties will reach a consensus that allows the Constitution to be reformed, according to the Sigma Dos survey. Those who voted for Podemos in the last elections are those who most support the constitutional reform
(89 per cent) and also those who opted for the PSOE (75.8 per cent), compared to the voters of the PP, among which less than half (48.9 per cent) consider it necessary to take that step. The voters of the PP, PSOE and Ciudadanos are the ones who most oppose that this ‘modification’ includes the authorisation to call an independence referendum (up to 85.4 per cent are against in the case of the PP), while the 60.8 per cent of the electorate of Unidos Podemos would be in favour that this reform is included in a new Constitution. In addition, the survey indicates that 32.7 per cent of those interviewed are in favour of the State regaining competencies that are now managed by the autonomous communities; 27.4 per cent want more self-government for the autonomies and 20.8 per cent prefer to leave things as they are.

hen is a Bank not a Bank? I had reason to visit Sol Bank in La Marina bank this week to pay money into account. Found out again that services have changed again without any notification. New rule from beginning of 2018 is they will not take coins to put into personal accounts. Only way you can pay in coins is by having a business account. Told by very sympathetic staff that could take it to Supermarkets or bars etc to get it changed. Went to one first to try it wouldn’t do it as they had enough coins. Not everyone goes out with a pocket full of coins, I just put mine in a drawer and take it to bank twice a year to change or deposit. Banco Sabadell was good until it took over Cam bank - seems they have now inherited Cam bank bad habits. Kind regards Graham Senior

Staying healthy in Winter Every winter, we are greeted with headlines about how the health service is inundated over the festive period. No one really wants to spend the holidays in their doctor’s surgery when they could be tucking into mince pies and watching The Sound of Music for the hundredth time. Luckily, there are a few health steps and precautions you can take to stay illness-free this winter: Sunshine in a bottle Vitamin D is important to keep our bones and muscles healthy and is primarily made by a reaction in our skin to sunlight. However during the winter
months (October-March) in the UK, sunlight doesn't contain enough UVB radiation to make vitamin D and we must rely on getting it from food and supplements. Foods that contain vitamin D include oily fish, red meat and eggs, but as only a small amount of vitamin D is found in these products, it is recommended that everyone consider supplements over winter, with the aim for an intake of 10mcg a day. Lighten up It is estimated that two million people in the UK suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as 'winter depression'. The symptoms which include low mood, irritability and fatigue tend to reach their peak
between December and February. In order to improve the symptoms of the winter blues, I suggest walking for one hour a day, especially at midday and on brighter days, and sitting near windows when possible, or in front of a light box for two hours a day. It is also worth considering painting your home in pale, reflective colours which may help brighten up your environment. Furthermore, studies have shown that staying warm can reduce your SAD symptoms, so wear plenty of layers, gloves and scarves, drink hot drinks, and aim to keep your home at a temperature between 18-21C. If you are
still struggling with your mood despite these efforts then do see your doctor as you may need to consider psychological therapies - or, in some cases, medication. Scrub up If you are sick of catching every virus incubating in your commuter train carriage, the best way to avoid getting ill is to wash your hands regularly, as 80 percent of infectious diseases are spread by touch. Whilst most of us will gladly dip our hands under the taps, to have an effective wash, you must spend 45 seconds at the sink with soap, ensuring to interlock your fingers, rub the backs and palms of your hands and even your thumbs. Act fast If you feel like you're about to come down with the lurgy, be proactive and take zinc supplements. Studies show that zinc can speed up your recovery from a cold and reduce the severity of your symptoms if taken within 24 hours of them starting. You may also consider giving yourself a health boost by upping your vitamin C intake, ensuring you're eating as many fruit and vegetables as possible – tis the season for Brussel sprouts! Moderating your drinking Winter tends to be a time for excess, but we Brits often take it a bit too far when it comes to Christmas office parties - or that extra glass of warming whiskey in front of the TV on the cold and dreary evenings. We are well aware that alcohol can have damaging effects on many of our organs, leading to liver disease and increase the risks of heart disease as well as a number of cancers, but alcohol misuse can also weaken your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections over these winter months. If Continued on pg 49

you are not drinking within the recommended limits of 14 units a week, perhaps consider choosing a drink with less alcohol content or even trying to cut back altogether in order to protect yourself this winter. Get jabbed On average 8,000 people die of flu in the UK each year. Despite this shocking statistic, most people ignore their invite to get the flu jab as they are worried it will make them sick. This however is a myth. As there is no active virus in the jab, it can't give you the flu - and you are most likely just to end up with a slightly sore arm! So if you have been offered a flu jab by your GP, jump at the opportunity to help protect yourself and your loved ones. Take supplements Usually found in yoghurt drinks, probiotics will introduce good bacteria to help fight off the bad bacteria that can lead to winter illnesses. Vitamin C and Echinacea are also winter must haves.
How does Echinacea help with colds? Published in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, the University of Connecticut performed a meta-analysis study that evaluated 14 studies and determined that: • Echinacea cuts the chances of catching a common cold by 58 percent. • Echinacea reduces the duration of the common cold by almost one-and-ahalf days. The take home message from our study is that echinacea does indeed have powerful cold prevention and cold treatment benefits. If you have a sore throat then, gargling salt water is the good oldfashioned way to reduce inflammation and flush out bacteria and studies have shown that Zinc supplements can shorten the duration of colds and chills. Vitamin C can help to boost your immune system. If your first thought is ‘better pick up some orange juice’ you might be surprised to hear that yellow bell peppers actually have a much higher concentration of Vitamin C. Broccoli, green leafy veg and strawberries are also good sources.
Eat yourself healthy A healthy balanced diet can really help to boost your immunity and your spirits. Juices and salads aren’t particularly tempting in the colder months. But you might want to look at making wholesome soups, stews and curries. You could whiz up a batch at the weekend, then freeze a few portions to whip out when you can’t be bothered to cook from scratch. Eat spicy food as spices are a natural decongestant. An extra hot vindaloo will help to release the mucus blocking your sinuses. Ginger, cinnamon and turmeric are all great for fighting inflammation. Bone Broth – Contains amino acids and minerals that naturally support immunity. Consume soup made of real bone broth and vegetables. Water – Adequate hydration is the key to flushing out the virus from your system. Try to drink at least 8 ounces every 2 hours. Hot water with lemon, honey, and cinnamon – Helps prevent mucus buildup and keeps you hydrated. Ginger – Make a ginger tea and add raw honey. Garlic and onions – Both of these vegetable help boost immune function and have antibacterial and antiviral properties from a compound they contain allicin. Festive stress While Christmas can be a great time for relaxing, eating, drinking and being merry, the run up can prove a little stressful at times. If the very thought of packed shops, family arguments and endless washing up is enough to bring you out in a cold sweat, you might want to check out our Bach Rescue Remedy range. Just four drops in a drink or on your tongue might help to ease emotional demands.

No scientific evidence for therapeutic cannabis says OMC The Collegiate Medical Organisation (OMC) has considered today that "in the light of current scientific knowledge", for the time being, no evidence exists for the therapeutic use of cannabis to be assessed.
The General Assembly has unanimously endorsed a report requesting that the therapeutic use of cannabis have a solid scientific backing, be subject to strict control of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) and follow the procedures normally established for any other drug. The WTO says so after the Health and Social Services Commission of Congress this week gave the green light to the creation of a subcommittee to analyze the possible regulation in Spain of the therapeutic use of this drug and its derivatives, fruit of a proposal by Ciudadanos Law (Cs).

Doctors warn that the use of cannabis is subject to the possibility of adverse effects to the central nervous system that can cause psychic alterations, in addition to its repercussions on the respiratory system. According to the WTO, the World Medical Association itself has recognised and described "serious harmful effects" to health caused by this substance: psychiatric comorbidities, demotivation, polydrug use, even as a trigger for traffic accidents. Other recent studies, says the report, has shown that the composition of marijuana smoke is similar to that of tobacco smoke, "which should alert for its possible effect on lung health." Cs initiative shows that cannabis has shown important effects in the prevention of nausea and vomiting of chemotherapy, in the improvement of neuropathic pain and spasticity characteristic of multiple sclerosis and as a remedy to combat seizures in epilepsy. The medical organization points out that there are other medicines to prevent nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and that no international guide recommends cannabis derivatives for neuropathic pain, nor is there any scientific evidence in the case of the treatment of epilepsies.

Mobile phone calling costs to come down
One year in prison for disco sex assault
Mobile phone use costs could come down by up to 40 percent within the next two years, if the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) goes ahead with its current recommendations. Calls would cost as little as 0.64 cents per minute by the year 2020 in accordance with the European Commission's requests. The CNMC has been analysing call costs among all operators after receiving a letter from the European Commission giving it two months to do so. The aim is to reduce end call costs by 40 percent - the tariff charged by network operators to virtual mobile operators, those which do not have their own network, which will reduce the final cost to the customer. According to the CNMC, virtual operators will cut their own costs by call tariffs being reduced, because they have to pay main operators for use of the network. The current network price for mobile calls is 1.09 cents per minute, and the CNMC wants to see it reduced to 0.7 cents in 2018 and 0.66 in 2019, then finally to 0.64 cents by 2020. Although customers are likely to be charged slightly more than this, because of the network and virtual operators needing to make a profit margin, they will still see a reduction in the price of making calls with their mobiles.
A ruling was issued this week which will see a man accused of sexual assault spend a year in prison. The man was found guilty of hiding in the toilets of a disco in Novelda where he proceeded to inappropriately touch a young female victim and used threats of violence and intimidation. The hearing in Alicante heard that at around 6am on May 5 2013, the accused hid in the ladies toilet at a nightclub in Novelda. When the victim went into one of the cubicles, he forced himself inside and locked the cubicle door. Once inside, the man sexually assaulted the girl and held her tightly by the arm to prevent her from leaving the toilet. He also lowered his trousers and demanded that the victim perform a sex act on him. The girl refused. Two other people entered the ladies bathroom and heard the girl crying. The accused dressed himself and fled the scene. The ruling prevents the man from approaching the victim for a year and will also see him paying compensation of €3200 for moral damages. The defendant said at the trial that it was a consensual relationship and that it was the victim who invited him to go to the bathroom. The court, hearing the statement of the victim, highlighted that the girl's statements have remained the same throughout the judicial process, "without fissures or contradictions." The judge added, "it is beyond doubt that the complainant did not consent at
any time to have sexual relations with the accused.” The judge also considered the other elements of the victim’s statement which were confirmed by other sources and by the injuries sustained by the victim on the night. A friend of the victim came to the bathroom to look for her when she sent a whatsapp message asking for help, but the accused covered the victim’s mouth to prevent her asking for help. Two other girls saw the accused rush out of the bathroom and the victim left crying in his wake. The ruling says that "to block the escape of the victim, the accused stood at the door and held the victim's arm strongly, he covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming when a friend came to look for her." These facts prove to the court that there was physical violence and intimidation on the part of the accused.

Volvo to trial self drive electric buses Volvo Buses and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore have signed a cooperation agreement on a research and development program for autonomous electric buses. The program is part of the Land Transport Authority of Singapore's drive to create new solutions for tomorrow's sustainable public transport. For Volvo, this will be its first autonomous application in public transportation and it has chosen NTU as its partner in this endeavour. Volvo has already demonstrated the autonomous technology in mining, quarry and refuse collection operations. The 12-metre Volvo 7900 electric bus is already operating around the world, but the buses to be deployed in Singapore will be equipped with autonomous driving technologies. This include GPS and LIDAR laser technology systems for charting, positioning and detecting obstacles around the vehicle. "We are seeing fast-growing interest in both autonomous and electric vehicles in cities all over
the world. Together with NTU, one of the world's leading universities of technology, we now have the possibility of testing various solutions under realistic conditions in a major city that has high ambitions for its public transport," says Håkan Agnevall, President Volvo Buses. NTU President Professor Subra Suresh, said, "Industry-academic connections are key in nurturing an environment which promotes innovation, research excellence,
and technological change for a better tomorrow. NTU takes pride in its strong industry connections, and this partnership with Volvo will pave the way for future mobility solutions by developing and testing autonomous buses right here on campus. These solutions will further strengthen Singapore's vision of embracing autonomous vehicle technologies and enhance public
transportation." One of the autonomous electric buses will be used on Singapore's advanced new test facility for autonomous vehicles, CETRAN*. Here, NTU's researchers will in a fenced-off area be able to test new functionality and study how the bus interacts with other road-users in various conditions. The second bus will be used for tests in the bus depot in partnership with the operator SMRT. The aim is that tomorrow's autonomous buses should be able to charge their batteries, drive through the depots to the vehicle wash and park - entirely autonomously. The cooperative program between Volvo Buses and NTU is underway and will initially last for two years. The jointly developed autonomous electric buses will arrive into Singapore in the beginning of 2019. Fast-charging stations based on the common OppCharge interface will be supplied by ABB. *Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research of Autonomous Vehicles

The robots of SEAT SEAT shares the daily routine of its Robots: More Than 1,600 km and 23,800 Parts * 125 automated guided vehicles (AGV) share the workspace every day with 7,000 employees at the SEAT factory in Martorell, Barcelona * These intelligent robots transport 23,800 parts daily and cover a distance of 436,000 km every year, equivalent to the distance between Earth and the Moon * Robot-based transport eases and optimises factory workers' jobs and reduces production time by 25% A blue light goes on at 5 o'clock in the morning in the engines warehouse. It belongs to one of the 125 robots that begins its route in one of the workshops at the SEAT factory in Martorell, where it makes up to 2,800 rounds every day. This is how these mobile robots work: - 125 robots and 7,000 factory workers: They scan a barcode to make sure they transport the right part, and a sensor then opens the warehouse door so they can follow their circuit. This is how some of the 125 AGVs begin their day, routinely crossing paths with each other and with the 7,000 factory workers in what appears to be a fully synchronised dance performance. The automatic robots transport engines, gearboxes, shock absorbers or door windows, and their individual payload is up to 1,500 kg in weight. - A trip to the Moon with traffic lights and pedestrians: Every year, the AGVs travel over 436,000 km, which is more than the distance between Earth and the Moon. When following their pre-set paths they know when to stop at a red light or when a worker crosses their path thanks to their 360° perimeter vision. - Navigating within the 'Robot Galaxy': The AGVs at the Martorell factory follow 40 guide paths set out with magnetic tracks embedded in the floor. Each route lasts between 1 and 7 minutes. During this time, the robots follow the steering circuits and automatically reduce their speed in curves so they do not lose stability when carrying heavy loads and are able to maintain a safety distance. - Remote control: Five employees configure, and if necessary, remotely modify the path settings of all the AGVs from a control room. A centralised server gathers information from the software installed in each robot, and their exact
position is displayed with a numerical symbol on the screens in the room. - Intelligence sharing in Industry 4.0: The 4th industrial revolution enables
workers to control processes to optimise decision-making and let these collaborative robots perform the most physical and repetitive tasks.

Types of Traffic Monitoring Devices Spain operates a network of traffic monitoring devices, not only looking for drivers who are speeding and those who skip trough red lights, but the new range monitors for such bad practices as using a mobile phone and the use of seatbelts. Here are the five types of monitoring devices currently in use. 1. Fixed Cameras: These devices are nicknamed “speed traps without operators” as they are located along the road network, usually at the side of the road, or sometimes on poles or across the carriageway, and monitor vehicles as they pass, recording those who exceed the maximum permitted limit. The latest devices, known as Traffic Eye (which we featured last week) are capable of monitoring far more than the traditional cameras. 2. Mobile Radars: These operate with an operator, or usually a small team, and are often in unmarked Guardia Civil vehicles, as well as those in marked cars belonging to traffic law enforcement groups, including the DGT themselves. Depending on the type of equipment, the recording vehicle can either be static or moving. Smaller, compact devices are now available which are small enough to be carried on motorbikes, although they are not actually fitted to the bikes, they are placed on the roadside to monitor traffic. 3. Fixed-Section Radars: These devices operate over a fixed distance of road and monitor the average speed between two points on that section. These devices are often considered to give a more realistic impression of recorded speed as the driver doesn´t usually react instantly
when they see one, and so the average reading is a more likely speed recorded. The camera at point “A” records the number plate as the vehicle passes, including the date and time. Using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, the car is then recorded as it passes point “B”, and the time it has taken to cover that distance recorded. If the journey has registered an average speed above the permitted limit then the details are sent to a central processing point where the fine is
automatically processed and sent to the driver. 4. Red-Light Cameras: This type of equipment does not measure the speed of a vehicle but takes a photograph if the vehicle has failed to stop at a red light. In Madrid alone this year there have been an addition five of these cameras installed already this year with another four due before they become active in June. Incidentally, in France, a similar scheme has been on trial where a Stop sign has a camera attached, catching hundreds of drivers on a daily basis. 5. Pegasus Equipped Helicopters: Pegasus is the name of a recording device
fitted to most of the DGT´s traffic helicopters. Distinctive by their yellow and light blue colouring, these “eyes in the sky” can catch offending motorists from a kilometre away and at a height of 300 metres, recording the average speed and vehicle characteristics, as well as monitoring for other traffic violations. Once the infraction is recorded the data is sent immediately to a central processing point, the Centro de Tratamiento de DenunciasAutomatizadas, or ESTRADA, where a fine is automatically issued. In the event of a serious offence, the helicopter crew will summon ground crews to intercept the vehicle. There is also another monitoring device which is sometimes confusing to motorists, as these metal boxes live alongside the road network but have no visible means of taking a picture. They are identifiable by a square marking in the lane nearby, which is a monitoring sensor, sending information to the roadside box. These devices are used to monitor traffic flow statistics and are not used in enforcement, which is why they have no means of recording individual vehicle details. They are able to record the vehicle type and the number of vehicles using an area, providing essential data to road planners. In total, across Spain, there are currently around 1,000 fixed cameras, 16 Fixed-Section Radars and 6 helicopters equipped with Pegasus, as well as countless patrols from both the Guardia Civil and the police.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Crossings There are many different looking crossings on the roads in Spain, often in urban areas where there may be more pedestrians needing to cross the roads. Some of these crossings are raised, some are flat, some are coloured black and white, some red, some blue, and there are a lot of myths surrounding the different colours and their meaning. There is also often confusion about bicycles and their means of crossing the road. Here we will look at some of the most common questions, and give the answers. Most people are aware of what we might call a “zebra”, with black and white alternating stripes across the road, but what about the red ones, or blue ones or any other colours? There are two ways of answering the question, and so we will start with the simple and legal one. Article 168 of the Tráfico, Circulación y Seguridad Vial, says... “c) Marca de paso para peatones. Una serie de líneas de gran anchura, dispuestas sobre el pavimento de la calzada en bandas paralelas al eje de ésta y que forman un conjunto transversal a la calzada, indica un paso para peatones, donde los conductores de vehículos o animales deben dejarles paso. NO podrán utilizarse líneas de otros colores que alternen con las blancas.” To explain what that means in as literal way we can, it states that pedestrian crossings are formed of a series of wide lines arranged from the pavement and parallel to the axis thereof, forming a set across the road where drivers of vehicles or animals must let pedestrians pass. However, in answer to the question about different colours used on crossings, the last phrase, “NO podránutilizarselíneas de otroscoloresquealternen con
lasblancas”, states that you must not use other colours that alternate with the white ones. Therefore, by the legal definition set out in this document, the only colours which should exist on pedestrian crossings are white, and the colour of the road. However, the more complex answer comes about when we look at different methods of traffic calming, means to slow down road traffic to create a safer environment for all. There have been many different studies relating to traffic calming, and highlighting pedestrian crossings better has been the outcome of some of that research. A study in 2014 concluded that the best way to make crossings safer for pedestrians was to “transform these pedestrian passages into eye-grabbing spectacles: a school of colorful fish, a skein of yarn, a skeleton, a row of largecaliber bullets.” That said, that study was done by an artist rather than a road safety professional, although the impact was successful. By creating a surface which drivers looked out for could improve the awareness of the crossing, but other experts also suggest that these could do more damage than good, as distracting a driver from the vulnerable road users is a recipe for disaster, as drivers look at the crossing and not the people on it or waiting to cross. You will see that many of the coloured crossings are on raised humps, again traffic calming measures, but a lot of these humps also don´t fall in with the legal requirements set down by law, and so quite a lot have been removed in recent years. More recently, some countries, including the U.K. are now starting to remove these humps altogether, as modern studies condemn them as being bad for the environment, as they cause more pollution through
the actions of the drivers braking and accelerating in between them, rather than maintaining a steady, slow speed. That said, irrespective of the actual colour, if a pedestrian is waiting to cross, vehicles on the main carriageway must stop and allow them to, so long as it is safe to do so. It is a common myth that the some colours mean you must stop and others mean you don´t have to, but this is not the case. The rules are the same as a pedestrian crossing means traffic must give way to pedestrians if it is safe to do so. Next, we look at bicycles and crossings. When you are on the bicycle you are considered a vehicle and so you are not permitted to ride over the crossing, in the same way a car, truck, or bus would not be allowed to use it. If you are on a bike and with to cross the road via a pedestrian crossing then you must get off the bike and walk across, thus making you a pedestrian pushing a wheeled object, rather than a vehicle. There are however specific cycle crossings. The appearance of these differs from pedestrian crossings as they are formed of a pathway marked out by thick broken lines, which look more like boxes, which guide cycle riders in the direction they should ride. Vehicles on the main road approaching these crossings have priority through them, as on the cycle lane path there will be a STOP sign, which tells the cyclists to stop and give way. There are a number of these crossings around the Torrevieja area, particularly on the CV-905 which runs towards Quesada. As you drive along the main road you will be able to see the signs which tell the cyclists to stop. Occasionally, particularly in towns and cities, there are pedestrian crossings which run parallel to cycle crossings. In this case, cyclists are allowed to ride across the road, but only on the designated lane.
P.A.S.
The P.A.S. system based on the first response to a situation, in which the primary concern should always be protection, then advising others, and then assisting those in need. In Spanish, PAS is derived from ProtegerAvisarSocorrer, which we could translate to Protect, Advise, Assist. Let us look at the three elements. You can see how these come together on the pictogram, remembering that the first and most important stage is safety. Protect What to Do. Knowing what to do if you witness a traffic collision can not only save the lives of the injured, but also your own. Never forget the three steps: Protect, Advise and Assist. Self-protection. Park your own vehicle in a safe spot and wear your reflective vest before leaving it. Keep away from a burning vehicle or if you notice that it is transporting dangerous goods. Protect the accident site. Signal the area as soon as possible by placing warning triangles and switching on your hazard warning lights. Advise Call the emergency services on 112 (they speak multiple languages, including English). Information to provide: 1. Location of the place of accident (street, number, kilometre point, if it is a
two-way street, the address, and report any other detailthat can assist in identifying your location quickly: chapel, restaurant ... 2. The number of injured people and all the information you can provide (if unconscious, bleeding etc). 3. Special circumstances (the existence of trapped persons, danger of falling vehicle, if they are transporting dangerous goods, if fallen into water etc). 4. Characteristics and number of vehicles. 5. Wait from the controllers to confirm the details before hanging up. Assist Be extremely careful in order to not add or aggravate injuries. You should not do. 1. As a general rule, do not move the injured, nor remove them from the vehicle. 2. If they are a biker, do not remove the helmet. 3. Do not give drink, food or medication. 4. Do not allow them to move on their own. 5. Do not leave until emergency services say it is okay. You should do 1. Stay close to the injured, if possible, at their side. Try to keep them calm. 2. If necessary, and always if you know how to, perform first aid.

Your Week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Oh, hello Jason Roy. 180 against the Australians in less than a day? Strewth, that is more than most of the Test squad managed in the entire series. Yes, yes I know it is a different format but still. Roy scored plenty of runs in county cricket last summer and should have been in the Ashes squad for me, batting middle order where he could have been proactive and maybe even destructive. So what if he only has one way of playing? Even if it only came off once or twice in a series it probably wins a match and imagine if we’d had Alex Hales in there as well. England chased down a notch over 300 to take a 1-0 lead in the ODI series and Joe Root, free from the burden of captaincy (please take note England selectors) scored 90 not out to lead the side home. Roy’s 180 was the record ever ODI knock by an Englishman, beating Hales’ 171 last summer.
Jason Roy
Trevor Bayliss, the England cricket coach, has said that he will stand down once his contract expires in 2019. Bayliss was brought in to improve our white ball game and he has certainly done that. However what was not expected was that he’d pretty much destroy our Test game in the process. Surely it could work to have a different coaching set-up for different formats? Or is that just too common sense for English sport? Joe Root has also said that the English players must “commit 100% to the new ideas” or they will risk the axe. I am hoping that “new idea number one” is stop going out, getting drunk and acting like students when on England duty. “New idea number two” might well stop being toilet when playing the Ashes in Australia. In the tennis, the Australian Open gets underway this week and your guess is as good as mine as to who is actually turning up. Last week I suggested that Andy Murray, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Jo Konta might all be missing. Now it looks like it is only Sir Andrew who is taking another fortnight off. Even that might be wrong. Now now, you don’t read this for actual sports news do you? Just so you can avoid putting actual money on either of these two, I am tipping Roger Federer’s Indian summer to continue in the men’s draw and Venus Williams to make up for the fact that I have no clue as to her younger sister’s whereabouts. “Anthony Joshua is in for a huge shock,” said boxer Joseph Parker “A couple of months ago I heard him say: ‘Why should I be worried about this little kid from New Zealand?’ Well, now he’s about to find out. And the world is about to find out whether AJ can really take a punch. My entire existence is now devoted to proving what the boxing world already knows.” That’s proper fighting talk from Parker who is fighting Joshua in the ring on March 31. The bout is to unify the IBF, WBA Super and IBO belts. Parker is as far out as 10-1 with the bookmakers which really, really should be worth sticking a tenner on, just in case.
