Big name to lead Cabo Roig Parade The organisers of the Cabo Roig St Patrick’s Day Parade have secured the services of former Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen as Grand Marshall at this year’s parade. OWEN served as head of the Irish Government from 2008 to 2011, taking the reins after Bertie Ahern’s resignation. The Costa Blanca People spoke exclusively to local businessman Brian Kiernan, who has been involved in the Cabo Roig St Patrick’s Day Parade since its inception. Brian told us, “This is a major coup for Cabo Roig, and for the Costa Blanca – we are delighted that the former leader of the Irish government is coming here to our little corner of the world to meet the huge Irish community here, and to lead the way for the now famous St
Patrick’s Day Parade in Cabo Roig.” The parade this year falls on a Saturday and is sure to be the biggest and best yet. The timings of the parade itself are to be confirmed soon by the organising committee in order to ensure that the parade and the Six Nations rugby don’t clash and that
everyone gets to enjoy the day. Italy is set to take on Scotland in Rome, followed by England versus Ireland at Twickenham and finally, Wales and France will do battle in Cardiff. Alongside Brian Cowen will be Galway TD Frank Fahey who was instrumental in securing the

participation of the former Taoiseach as Grand Marshall, explained Kiernan. He continued, “This is absolutely major for the area, it should secure some excellent publicity in Ireland – all of which will be good promotion for this area of the Costa Blanca and all we have to offer.” Also in attendance will be former Galway Mayor, Martin Quinn and other Irish community leaders. In the run up to the parade, the organising committee will be hosting a number of fundraising events to help towards the running costs. Already, some money was raised with the raffle of a holiday for two people to come to Spain to see the parade. Today (Tuesday 23rd January), Smiling Jacks is hosting a bowling event at the ozone and still to come are race nights, quiz nights and golf events. Local businesses, clubs, charities, groups and organisations are warmly invited to participate in the parade and
organisers are keen to remind participants that there are prizes up for grabs for the top three floats. Anyone interested in participating in this year’s parade which, of course, takes place on March 17th should call Jimmy on 603 11 48 96 or Richie on 637 49 09 37 or drop into the Trinity Bar on Cabo Roig strip.
