New apartment block causes misery for neighbours

R

esidents of Pueblo Principe have been left devastated by a developer’s decision to build a four storey apartment block at the bottom of some of their gardens. The Villacosta Club development is well underway with no plans being available for residents to view and no consultation period. However, despite this residents are not being unreasonable and neither are they demanding that the work stops. However, they are asking that the builder stick to his original plan of a two storey development. Residents are disputing that a 13.5

metre wall just 5 metres from their homes should have been given planning permission when all of the 154 properties on the urbanisation are 1 and 2 storey only. This back wall to the apartments will instantly block their view, sunlight, privacy when sitting in the garden and according to many residents, renders their properties un-saleable. There is also the possibility of houses losing their phone, internet and TV services as satellite signals will be affected or blocked completely. In addition, once built, many residents will have to put up with the noise from cars entering Villa Costa Club and the opening

and closing of electric gates to the underground car park. The residents are also annoyed at the practices used by the builder during the excavation works. Machinery has been on site from 8am on 15th January when the work began resulting in deafening noise, vibration that has cracked walls and dust. There has been no proper protective

‘building fence’ and during the high winds the rubble and earth was not damped down as promised and the dust then caused problems for some residents already suffering from asthma and breathing difficulties. The lack of consideration by builder is evident on the site, where several trees have been fully or partially by the excavated earth and building materials and also dumped on a municipally owned area that is supposed to be a designated green area or park.

Resident David said: “There has been planning permission on that site for several years, however we were always Continued on page 3

The Torrevieja tapas route is back for its biannual appearance in the town. From 19th to 29th April on the days Thursday to Sunday you will be able to try out a range of tapas from 12pm until 4.30pm and from 7.30pm until 11pm. The gourmet tapa is priced at €2.50 with a drink and there is also a tapa of the house at the same prices. The event is organised by the Asociación de empresarios de Hosteleria de Torrevieja y Comarca and has come to be a very popular event. The participating restaurants are mostly situated around the town centre, however, there are an increasing number located a little further out of town too. You can vote for your favourite tapa and serious tapas routers collect official stamps from the restaurants they visit on their Tapas Route Card. Once they have 10 stamps then it can be entered into a prize draw for a number of different prizes. The event has been so successful over the years that other town are copying it too. There are currently 31 local bars and restaurants that are taking part in this tapas route and you can create your own little circuit around the town trying new dishes and new places.

Orihuela the residents, led by urbanisation president Teresa Dobinson discovered the new plans (presumably with the changed height) had not been filed and were ‘not available’ for them to see at the Town Hall. Based on this reason the administrators for Pueblo Principe requested that the building work stopped until the work and plans have proper authorisation and the police closed the site. Of course this is only a temporary reprieve and the residents are now approaching local political party CLARO to seek its help in finding out if the builder has indeed got legal and approved planning permission and to try and make him adhere to the initial proposal of two storeys. that looks at salt production and its place in local gastronomy. One of the unique aspects of salt production in Torrevieja is the way in which it is extracted. The means of gathering the salt is done through a semi submerged machine rather than relying on a land-based one which removes the salt once the water around it evaporates. There are different types of salt. Some salt includes an additional element and is collected from the surface of the lagoon. Participants had opportunity to do some salt testing too, including Mexican tequila which has salt as an accompaniment. The next talk will be held on April 18th and is called ‘The modernisation of salting’ and include information about making traditional salted fish and how tradition and modern approaches are being fused together.

The volunteers who help maintain La Mata and Torrevieja’s natural parks are busy again renovating the signs that remind people of the rules surrounding how the park is used. They need restoration every year as they become weather beaten and the paint fades badly. The signs are also an attraction for the local woodpeckers who seem to think that they are trees and consequently peck large holes in them which need to be filled.

Now the members of The Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal are varnishing the signs and filling in the holes every Saturday morning. If you think you might be able to help them with A renovated sign this job or with the other volunteer activities they are involved with every year then you can email them on lamatavols@gmail.com Suzanne O’Connell

Prison for head of a home for the elderly A three-year prison sentence has been awarded to the director of a home for the elderly in Torrevieja who illegally sold three plots of land belonging to an old person in her care. With the money collected, a sum of €54,000, she bought a Jaguar car. The court has found that the woman took advantage of her position to keep the resident’s money and agreed with the original court judgment that sentenced her to three years in prison. The opportunity to keep the money was the result of the director having a power of attorney. This enabled her access to the money acquired from the sale of the land. The use of power of attorney was justified on the basis that the resident did not want his children to have control and did not want them to inherit his assets. However, the court found that the director took advantage of her position to exert influence and that there was no proof that the man’s mental capacity was diminished. The incident happened in 2003 which meant that it took 13 years for it to come to court in Alicante. A factor that has also been taken into consideration by the courts. Torrevieja and surrounding regions are struggling to keep up with criminal proceedings leading to an extensive backlog of cases such as this.

Celebration of the Republic April 14th was the 87th anniversary of the second Spanish Republic which was proclaimed in 1931. A commemorative event was held in the Plaza de la Constitución with a rally and the reading of a manifesto. This year the manifesto reminded people of the fight against fascism and a reminder that Miguel Hernández, the poet, died in jail as a political prisoner on March 28th 1942. The parade went as far as the Hombre del Mar and drew attention to the fact that there are still social, economic and political problems in Spain.

Champion police officer A Local Police officer from Torrevieja, Carlos Sala Hernández, won the first place in the national shooting tournament that was played last week in Elda. Sala was awarded a score of 373 points in the individual category in which he was up against 23 other local police officers, national police officers and guardias civiles. The tournament was held in a shooting range of the Campo Alto de Elda industrial park and the maximum score was 400. There were competitions for individuals and for teams. Suzanne O’Connell

Celebrating food in Torrevieja Torrevieja is hosting a series of gastronomy conferences from April 13th. The idea is to celebrate and promote Torrevieja’s place in the world as a major salt producer and how this links with the use of salt in cooking. There will be four presentations to take place in Real Club Náutico and those attending will be able to take part in tasting sessions too. The title of the series of presentations are ‘Gastronomy – Torrevieja: History of Sea and Salt’ and will include culinary customs, the products used, the food industry and the Mediterranean diet. The series of presentations was announced by Councillor Fanny Serrano who is the councillor for tourism. ‘Salt is very important to our town,’ explained the councillor. ‘The history of salt is part of its identity.’ The first presentation took place on April 13th with the title ‘’La sal: única

piedra comestible’ ‘Salt: the only edible stone’ and included tasting of various types of salt. The second will be held on Wednesday April 18th and is entitled ‘La modernización de los salazones’ or ‘The modernisation of salting’. During this talk there will be information about the fusion between tradition and modern practices in the preparation of salted fish. On May 24th there will be a talk on ‘La sal y uso en la gastronomía’ or ‘Salt and its use in gastronomy’. The final talk will be on June 13th ‘Salinas y sal en tierras valencianas durante la Edad Moderna’ or ‘Salinas and sal in Valencian lands during the Modern Age’. The conferences take place at 8pm and include free admission although spaces are limited. Tax dodgers beware! Inspections of tourist rentals to begin in May Door-to-door inspections of unlicensed tourist rentals are set to kick off next month. Popular tourist spots will become the target of agents from the Agencia Tributaria, the Tax Agency. The agents are looking for owners who are offering undeclared short-term rentals that are not registered and do not pay tax. Meanwhile, all internet platforms such as Airbnb and Tripadvisor, as well as real estate agencies, will need to include the license numbers for any properties advertised from July. Companies will also be responsible for sending past information, from all tourist rentals since 1st January . Last year an expat was fined €60,000 after he was caught renting out his property without the correct paperwork last August. The businessman had been stung when he was visited by an inspector after expecting to rent his €3,000-a-week property to a family-of-four from Madrid. “He turned up and the first thing he asked for was my licence number,” the restaurant owner revealed. “He had booked through Airbnb so there was nothing I could do – I lost a whole week’s money.” Luckily for him he was able to get away with paying half the fine within an agreed two week period.

Not fit to live in You can’t choose your neighbours and for some families in Torrevieja this is becoming a problem that they are struggling to live with. A building on Avenida Diego Ramírez Pastor is becoming a health hazard according to two of its occupants, Carolina and José Antonio. The couple, of 22 and 29 years old, live five meters from the neighbour who is currently making their lives very difficult, according to Diario Informacion. Unfortunately the neighbour is believed to have Diogenes syndrome which is also sometimes known as senile

The situation has become even more difficult since Carolina is now expecting twins and her flat is within five metres of the decaying apartment. Now the couple are talking about having to move out and rent somewhere in another building without the threat of contamination. It’s not only the pests that are moving happily between the two properties that is concerning them. It is alleged that their neighbour has also made bonfires in the patio of the property and a fire engine had to be called. The couple say that he has also threatened to burn down the

It is usually an older adult who displays this type of behaviour and there can appear to be no mental or cognitive reason why. In this case the man responsible lives on the ground floor of the block and neighbours have complained that his apartment is full of rubbish, cockroaches and other pests. building and puts his music on at high volume whilst he leaves the premises himself. The couple have involved the local police and there have been frequent call outs. However, they are limited in their powers to intervene without a court order. Although the young couple are those most affected directly by the infestation of the apartment, others in the block are supporting their concerns. However, currently there seems to be no direct solution or practical action they can take. Suzanne O’Connell

MAKING PREPARATIONS FOR HABANERAS The habaneras competition is an international choral competition that is held annually in Torrevieja. Choirs come from other countries to take part in this very traditional celebration of the link between Torrevieja and Cuba. During the early days of trading, boats sailed out from Torrevieja to Cuba exchanging a range of goods. One of the more unusual exchanges was the habaneras tradition. The habanera is a particular type of rhythm that has been used in jazz and Latin pieces. If you visit the Eras de la Sal you can still see the flag for Cuba next to the Spanish flag in the harbour. This is the setting for the competition which has been held annually in Torrevieja since 1955. The choirs usually perform without musical accompaniment, and the songs are often on themes to do with the sea and sailing life. Every year choirs must sing one song in common. The main competition takes place in July. However, there is also a youth habaneras competition that this year takes place on

20th and 21st Aprilin the International Auditorium. Participating choirs include two from Madrid, one from Barcelona and the Youth Choir from Colombia. During the interval the Children’s and Youth Choirs of the Municipal Choir School will perform. The song in common that they must all perform this year is ‘Con un beso’ or ‘With a kiss’ which was written by José A. Quesada Hurtado and Aurelio MartínezLópez. There are generous prizes for the competition which this year includes €3,000 for first prize along with a trophy. Second prize is €2,000 and a trophy and third prize €1,000 and a trophy. If you would like to attend, tickets for the concert can be purchased from April 20th for €2 at the Habaneras offices in Patricio Pérez Street no.1 1C between the times of 9am and 11am and from 12pm until 2pm. You can also obtain more information by calling 965715579 or by emailing.francisco@habaneras.org. Suzanne O’Connell

Three arrested for stealing lorries The Guardia Civil seized two heavy goods vehicles and their cargo after they had been stolen by a gang of criminals. The lorries were first taken by the gangs and the materials werethen removed from them and stored in a warehouse in Los Montesinos. The Guardia Civil detained one of those responsible in Torrevieja and his accomplices were arrested in the suburbs of Madrid. The criminal group had been detected stealing the lorries which were themselves valued at €120,000. The criminal gang consisted of two Spanish people between the ages of 33 and 38 and one of 42 years old. The bounty was unusual as it consisted of dried baby milk and children’s toys valued at €200,000. However, this cargo was chosen because of being nonperishable and therefore of greater value to the thieves. The group operated by stealing the recently loaded lorries, hiding their merchandise and thenpassing it on, on the black market. The two from Madrid are brothers and it was their job to lay in wait, watching until the lorries were loaded. Then when they were parked up over night they would drive them away. The lorries would then be taken to Alicante province where the merchandise was placed in a warehouse

Pilar watchtower owners refuse access to inspectors The family that owns the watchtower of Pilar de la Horadada, built in 1591, denied access to Valencian Government Culture inspectors on Monday, when they had come to check on the preservation of the building. The Town Hall, which wants to allow visitors to explore the historic monument, said that this was not the first time this had happened as the owners “have refused to let technicians do their work before”. Both the inspectors and the council technician agreed the exterior of the watchtower had deteriorated and it was likely the interior was the same. The Town Hall assured it will keep working to get it restored and in the best condition for everyone to visit. Mireille Toddington

in Montesinos. This is where the third member of the gang would come into action as an intermediary. It was his responsibility to take care of the goods and arrange for their distribution. He would also sometimes help out with thefts in Alicante. At the moment the charges include stealing a lorry from Alcalá de Henares in Madrid with 60 crates of powdered milk and another in Agost which was full of boxes of dolls and toys. The theft of the lorry full of toys took place in November 2017 during the Christmas shopping campaign. Detectives were also able to seize both lorries as well as the stolen goods. One was found in Loeches and the police found another lorry in Formentera del Segura. The three arrested have been released until the case comes to court. Suzanne O’Connell

Whale killed by rubbish found off Spanish coast Man-made rubbish and pollution, including a drum, has caused the death of a whale found off a Spanish coast. The young sperm whale, discovered near Cabo de Palos in Murcia, died from its inability to digest the rubbish causing Peritonitis, an inflammation of its internal organs. An autopsy, conducted by the El Valle Wildlife Rescue Centre, found 29 kilos of waste including plastic bags, ropes, fishing nets and even a drum inside the animal. Murcia’s Environment Minister Consuelo Rosauro said: “The presence of plastics in seas and oceans is one of the biggest threats to the conservation of wildlife in the world.” Every year some 19 billion pounds of plastic waste ends up in the world’s oceans.

City bike scheme for Torrevieja If you’ve been to Barcelona and seen the bikes for hire on the streets, this could soon be a feature of Torrevieja’s street transport system. The idea was shared at the latest tourist conference meeting in the Casino in Torrevieja. The case for a town centre cycling scheme was put forward by professor Arie Romein who shared the story of Holland’s success in establishing bicycles as a main form of transport. In Holland there are more bicycles than there are inhabitants. The professor talked about the importance of ensuring that if such a scheme is introduced there are sufficient points from which to borrow and return the bikes. Some schemes do not require bikes to be returned to specific places but have ‘free points’ and others make use of an app for collection. Schemes to enable visitors to hire bikes can also be accompanied by the use of apps to

place 3,000 bikes in the town. A starting point for a bike scheme considered perfectly plausible by Arie Romein for a town the size of Torrevieja. One problem for Torrevieja in considering the scheme, is that the town is really designed for cars and not for pedestrians or for bicycles. There are currently a number of bike paths that peter out rather than having clear continuity or conclusion. There are other routes that have then had street lights or other obstacles built into them. If Torrevieja is to promote the use of bikes then there are many considerations to apply including closing off areas to cars and a door-to-door system that allows the public to use a combination of bicycle and car conveniently. The theory is a good one, however, its practical implication could be much more difficult to oversee. Suzanne O’Connell

Stray cats in the natural park Concerns are being registered that a colony of wild cats has been spotted in the natural park. The cats would originally have been domestic cats probably with their origins in the urbanisations of El Chaparral, La Siesta and San Luis. Abandoned, overtime, it is believed that they have made their way down into the lagunas de Torrevieja and La Mata which they are now making their home. They would seem to prefer the more tranquil habitat of the lakes and the pine trees to that of the urbanisations. These cats can travel up to 20 kilometres a day and some would seem to alternate between the residential areas and the park. At this stage it is unclear how many there might be and what exactly the extent of the threat is, if at all. The park’s management are not too concerned at the moment. However, some people are worried that these animals could affect the parks’ natural balance as they will live off insects, reptiles, rabbits and small birds. The animals most at risk from the cat colony are those birds that nest on the ground and the bats’ nests. It is proposed that the animals could be caught, sterilised and then released into other, less vulnerable, places. However, there is disagreement about whether this is a real possibility as the animals are very territorial. The only animal naturally to be a threat to the cats are foxes who are also present in the area around the lake. Suzanne O’Connell

Beach bar contract for the coast The Councillor of the Beach area of Orihuela, Luisa Boné has given an update on the situation for the provision of ‘chiringuitos’ (beach bars) for the summer of 2018. The service provided over the last few years for catering, sun loungers, parasols and leisure services has been suspended. This decision has been taken

service. The Councillor for Beaches hopes to finish the process of approval of the specifications for the new tender of the service in the next few in order to be able to carry out the activities duly protected by law in the summer of 2018. Questions have been raised recently as to the validity of the company providing

following an investigation into irregularities in the tendering and awarding of the original contract and payments by the service provider. The contract between the City Council and the successful applicant began in June 2014, for a period of four years, extendable for three successive years. Last November Luisa Boné, announced her wish not to proceed with the extension of the service in the face of the allegations made by several other businesses involved in the tender process. The matter was raised with the Prosecutor's Office and the Examining Magistrate's Court, which have investigated the facts and initially established a supposed fraud, in the tender and adjudication condition that only a business that held the "Q for tourist quality" could be awarded the contract. Due to the above, the Department of Beaches issued a new tender for the

the services over the Easter period. However, as it started in the summer of 2014 the four year award would naturally end after Easter 2018 to complete the contract in its entirety. No extensions will be made to the contract period. In the interim period between the courts finding an the end of the contract period, both the company awarded the service and the objectors have addressed the City Council stating their case, objections and allegations about an extension of the service. From the perspective of the municipal technicians there was never any question that the contract would cover the Easter season of 2018, having actually started in the summer of 2014. In this sense, the winning company would have paid the Costas fees, which are required to be awarded in full for the years 2014 to 2017, despite having started to operate the activity only in June 2014.

Mayor Bascuñana holds Boozy Brits meeting on the coast could face The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has met with neighbours and representatives of associations on the coast at the Alameda del Mar Civic Center. He was accompanied by the deputy mayor, Rafael Almagro, and the councillors for Emergencies, Beaches and Social Welfare , Víctor Valverde, Luisa Boné and Sabina Galindo, respectively. The purpose of the meeting was to meet face-toface and discuss in detail several issues that are relevant to the coast in particular. Among the topics discussed was the Emergency Services Centre for the Coast, the AP-7 toll road and the improvement in services and projects that the Government Team plans to carry out in 2018 and that will be included in the municipal budget. The Mayor said that: “It had been a very productive meeting because we have collected the demands and needs of our residents, which we take note of because we remain 100 percent committed to meeting those needs.” All of the councillors present answered the questions raised by the audience at the end of the meeting. Among the investments planned for the Orihuela Costa for this year and whose investment will come from the PMS include: the creation of a football field and a skate park; the establishement of a multicultural centre, the improvement of parks, the improvement of the promenade in Cabo Roig to Cala Capitán, better facilities on beaches; tarmac and paving; as well as the reform at the Alameda del Mar Civic

Center, among other projects. The Mayor also recapped the investments already made in the last three years and announced that in the next Local Government Board will give approval to start paving and resurfacing roads at an investment of 570,091 euros in Campoamor, Los Dolses, Villamartín, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Citrus Centre and La Florida, as well as to start the refurbishment of parks and gardens for 300,000 euros in Villapiedra, Lomas de Cabo Roig, Montezenia, La Florida, Sector F2 and La Zenia. The Mayor said: “The Government Team and I are committed to prioritising the necessary requirements for the coast and continuing, without delay, investing in and providing services to meet the needs of the coast that have been neglected for many years. The total investments in 2016 and 2017 in the Orihuela coast amount to about 3,000,000 euros.” In response to issues highlighted by the recent death of Kai Fawcett-Bradshaw, the Mayor explained that in issues that are not the direct responsibility of the City Council the local government team’s concerns mirror those of the residents and the community such as the Emergency Services Centre, the provision of a second Health Centre, safety on the N332 and a SAMU ambulance dedicated to the coast, among others. Finally, Mayor Bascuñana invited the attendees to an upcoming meeting to continue this direct contact with the local community and its associations. Mireille Toddington

hefty fines at UK airports Drunk travellers at UK airports could face on-the-spot fines for bad behaviour. In a bid to crackdown on boozy inflight incidents, passengers could soon be slapped with new penalties costing a few hundred pounds. It comes as ministers are investigating the possibility of giving airport police officers the power to hand out immediate fines, without having to go through the courts, reported The Times. Reportedly, officials are also considering introducing a law for alcohol bought in airport shops. Passengers may soon need to place bottles of booze in a sealed plastic bag before boarding the flight. The new discussions are part of a strategy by the Department of Transport to clamp down on drunken mid-flight violent incidents. This year, the International Air Transport Association reported a 50% increase in passengers who had to be forcibly contained for bad behaviour, which ranged from verbal attacks to lifethreatening incidents.

Torrevieja’s two towers set to go ahead It looks like the two tower blocks planned to be built next to the park Doña Sinforosa are still on track to be constructed. The plans for the two buildings have passed through the environmental and territorial assessment stage of the planning application. The proposal is controversial as the building will have a significant impact on the skyline due to the tower blocks’ estimated 82 metres of height. The two blocks will have 26 storeys in contrast to the majority of structures in the area which reach no

higher than six floors. A limit that was placed on buildings due to the risk of earthquakes. Now, however, with changes to construction, and amendments to local laws, this requirement has been relaxed. This latest stage of planning approval means that officially the premises can be now be advertised, although the apartments and commercial areas have

already been promoted for some time. The application is not completely approved yet however. The planning proposals must now be presented to the public in the official publications of the Valencian Government. Amendments to the original application have had to be made, including a requirements that the building work does not impact on the Acequión channel and the bay itself. Originally entitled ‘Torres Sinforosa’ after the neighbouring park, it has been renamed ‘Torres Baraka’ and will occupy 32,000 m2 of some of the most lucrative land in the city. A further hurdle to the building’s development is the passage of the detailed study through the town council and to be agreed at the plenary meeting. It is likely that the coalition government will not entirely support its development. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, represents the Green Party and originally opposed the development when in opposition. However, the four-party government do not have an outright majority. The plans for modifications of the law to allow the building greater height were approved by the PP government under the now discredited mayor Pedro Hernández Mateo. The rights already given to the developers will now be difficult to avoid legally and it would seem unusual for the PP to reject them given their original support for the building. There are some obstacles for the builders themselves to overcome. One of the conditions for the building to go ahead is that half will be allocated for hotel use. This requirement was not a popular amendment to the original planning proposals. Although there is little hotel accommodation in Torrevieja there is not big demand for it either. Most of the tourist trade here takes place through rentals and there are already 70,000 homes available for rent. Some of the reluctance of the promoters for this aspect of the project can be seen in their advertising. This speaks of hotel apartments rather than a hotel as such. The next stage for the developers might have been reached but the fight to protect Torrevieja’s skyline is not over yet. Suzanne O’Connell

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The pound had a relatively good week, a reflection in part of the confidence shown in a survey of chief financial officers carried out on behalf of Deloitte. The survey revealed that for the first time in two years they do not see Brexit as the biggest risk to their business. The main concern now is weak domestic demand for their products and services, which may be related to Brexit but the establishment of the transition period. The pound was also assisted by a 1.5% monthly increase in the Halifax house price index early in the week. There was more good news; the British Retail Consortium reported that UK consumers demonstrated their confidence by spending 1.4% more in March than they did in the same month last year. Monetary Policy Committee member Ian McCafferty told Reuters in an interview that "We shouldn't dally when it comes to tightening policy modestly". As a notorious hawk, and having voted for an increase at the last MPC meeting, his sentiment did not come out of the blue but was nevertheless helpful to the pound. However, it wasn’t all rosy - UK manufacturing output unexpectedly fell 0.2% in February - the first decline in almost a year and down from revised growth of zero for January.

Economists had forecast a 0.2% rise in industrial and manufacturing output in February. Output from manufacturing rose by 2.5% year-onyear. Overall industrial output, which also includes energy production, went up 0.1% in February, after a 1.3% rise the previous month. Construction output dropped by 1.6% in February, on top of January's 3.1% decline. In addition, a lack of activity in the UK housing market could make it more difficult for Bank of England policymakers to raise interest rates, surveyors have said. However, on Thursday Pound Sterling has broken above the key 1.15 barrier against the Euro leaving the Poundto-Euro rate at its strongest level for ten months; it seems that many more believe in a May rate rise than fear its delay. In Germany exports fell more quickly than imports in February, narrowing the trade surplus to a seasonally-adjusted €19bn. Bank of Austria Governor Ewald Nowotny spoke of ending quantitative easing and raising the ECB's deposit rate from -0.4% to -0.2%. The statement had little impact on the euro, perhaps because Mario Draghi’s team central bank were quick to distance the comments from the official policy of the Governing Council.

Seagate Wealth Management

KEEPING IT LOCAL M

any people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of super‐ vision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but on‐going support and monitoring of the invest‐ ments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental princi‐ ples: the strength of the relation‐ ship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meet‐ ings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up‐to‐date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are per‐ forming. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control. If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transferring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

New direction for the Palm Farm

The Palm Farm is a Costa Blanca institution, having supplied palm trees, olive trees and tree felling services to expats for a number of years. Many readers will have noticed a prominent ‘sale’ of nursery stock advertised in the Palm Farm’s advertisement in the Costa Blanca People. We caught up with Paddy from the Palm Farm this week to find out what is happening with the business. Paddy explained, “It is quite simple really. Over the last year, the services part of the business – building work and ground

work – has grown enormously. Keeping up with how busy this has become, as well as our very successful garden clearances and makeovers, as well as tree felling, there just isn’t the time to dedicate to the nursery and production side of the Palm Farm. So, coupled with the fact that I am turning 70 in July, I have decided to scale that side of the business down in order to let the other aspects grow.” We asked Paddy what our readers should do if they are in search of a particular species of tree. He explained, “During my

time over here, I have got to know all the local growers and I can source anything that trade buyers require, so although I do not have to keep or grow stock anymore, I can still source it if required.” Paddy finished by saying, “The stock that we do have left is selling fast and selling cheap, so if anyone is interested I would recommend they come to see me in the next couple of weeks.” Call Paddy on 600 810 844 for directions to the Palm Farm nursery.

WELCOME TO MUMBAI with Vivalia Travel Mumbai's culture is a blend of traditional festivals, food, music, and theatres. The city offers a cosmopolitan and diverse lifestyle with a variety of food, entertainment, and night life, available in a form and abundance comparable to that in other world capitals.

Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India with an estimated city proper population of 12.4 million as of 2011. Along with the neighbouring regions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it is the second most populous metropolitan area in India, with a population of 21.3 million as of 2016. Mumbai lies on the Konkan coast on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies of the Koli people. For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the

Portuguese Empire and subsequently to the East India Company when in 1661 Charles II of England married Catherine of Braganza and as part of her dowry Charles received the ports of Tangier and Seven Islands of Bombay. Mumbai is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India. It is also one of the world's top ten centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow Economy Mumbai is India's largest city and is the financial and commercial capital of the country as it generates 6.16% of the total GDP. It serves as an economic hub of India, contributing 10% of factory employment, 25% of industrial output, 33% of income tax collections, 60% of customs duty collections, 20% of central excise tax collections, 40% of India's foreign trade and

â‚š4,000 crore in corporate taxes. Along with the rest of India, Mumbai has witnessed an economic boom since the liberalisation of 1991, the finance boom in the mid-nineties and the IT, export, services and outsourcing boom in the 2000s. Although Mumbai had prominently figured as the hub of economic activity of India in the 1990s, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is presently witnessing a reduction in its contribution to India's GDP. Architecture The architecture of the city is a blend of Gothic Revival, Indo-Saracenic, Art Deco, and other contemporary styles. Most of the buildings during the British period, such as the Victoria Terminus and Bombay University, were built in Gothic Revival style. Their architectural features include a variety of European influences such as German gables, Dutch roofs, Swiss timbering, Romance arches, Tudor casements, and traditional Indian features. Language Mumbai has a large polyglot population like any other metropolitan city of India. Sixteen major languages of India are also spoken in Mumbai, with the most common being Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English. English is extensively spoken and is the principal language of the city's white collar workforce. Culture Mumbai's culture is a blend of traditional festivals, food, music, and theatres. The city offers a cosmopolitan and diverse lifestyle with a variety of food, entertainment, and night life, available in a form and abundance comparable to that in other world capitals. Mumbai's history as a major trading centre has led to a diverse range of cultures, religions, and cuisines coexisting in the city. This unique blend of cultures is due to the migration of people from all over India since the British period.

Unconditional love

He is a fraud

I believed in unconditional love and thought I loved my husband unconditionally, until he broke my heart. I discovered he’d been having a secret affair with one of his co-workers. He lied to me for years about staying late at work, and going on business trips which I have since discovered were romantic trysts with this woman. Is there any such thing as unconditional love?

I was engaged to a man who lavished money on me. He said he was a successful businessman, drove a fancy car, and had his own place. However, I discovered that he was not wealthy, as he had said. The money was from his divorce settlement which he threw up the wall within 12 months, and as a result, soon had none. I found out his house was rented, and his car leased. He has nothing to his name. When I challenged him about it, he said he’d had to bail out his parents and it was their fault. I’ve since talked to his estranged family and learned this is not true, and he owes money to people all over town. I’ve been fooled and I feel like an idiot.

A parent’s love for their children? Perhaps. But even children can do things to break your heart. Should all love come with conditions? ’I will love you if you don’t cheat on me’. ‘I will love you if you give me all your money’. But the pain we feel when someone hurts us, isn’t that still love? Otherwise why would we let it affect us. My advice is to now exercise the only love that you can rely on; loving yourself first.

Don’t blame yourself. It’s easy to look wealthy, and actually own nothing. This guy lied to you and led you to believe he was something he is not. When you challenged him he told you a pack of lies. Where there’s no trust; there’s no future and you are well rid of him.

Spanish woman faces €28,000 parking fees other vehicles have also been abandoned for months. In 2013, a judge ordered the decamped motorist to pay the €28,000, but unsurprisingly she failed to materialise. The car lot owners demanded

Inmaculada M. drove her Volvo into the private parking lot under the Plaza Bisbe Berenguer Palou in Palma de Mallorca in March 2009. She selected the first parking space inside the barrier just a stone’s throw from the pay machines. As though determined to hog this prime location, she pulled on the hand brake and left it there for the next nine years - clocking up a huge 28,000 euros worth of parking fees. Finally, last week, a tow truck came to remove the car, bringing to an end a nearly decade-long legal fight. For nine years, the car park owners fought to get rid of the vehicle and collect the fee from the shadowy Inmaculada M. Four

the enforcement of the claim and Inmaculada M. was declared to be in default. But this made no difference. Months turned to years as Inmaculada M. Continually failed to respond. The process dragged and dragged on until 2017 when the courts awarded the parking lot owners the Volvo, though its

value obviously fails to cover even a fraction of the parking fee. With nothing to lose, they decided to wait a little longer to see if Inmaculada M. might surface, but eventually gave up the fight and called the tow truck to take the Volvo to the junk yard. Inmaculada M’s case is not unique in this parking lot. While wrestling with her case, the car lot owners reported that four other vehicles had also been abandoned for months. One such vehicle belonged to a recently divorced couple who had become confused over who owned the car. Another motorist had died, having parked his car there to go to a nearby hospital. In all four cases, the car park owners were able to extract at least some of the parking fee. However, with €28,000 on the meter, Inmaculada M. naturally decided to steer well clear.

Selling? The market is always right! Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!

The condition of your property starts with clear pictures on the Internet, professional photography that captures all the positives, diminishes any negatives, and relays visually-stimulating scenes in every area of your home. By continuing this same mindset with the first faceto-face visit with the home, you create confidence with the prospective buyer and build upon that initial image of credibility. This is a home they liked online, and when they visit this becomes a home they like when they’re standing inside of it. Real estate agents call it curb appeal. There’s that 10-second rule when meeting people, where you sum up who they really are immediately . . . that first impression. Houses are the same. Make sure your home is inviting, and have it cleaned from the curb to the front door. Once the buyer enters, let nothing be offensive or disorganized. Pay attention to the details! How does it smell? Make sure there’s no odour, clutter, picture, sound, or furnishing that is overpowering. Make every detail positive and memorable. For more information and guidance on buying and selling, please contact us and we will send you our FREE e-book or log on to: www.homes4u.es/new-kindle-e-book to request the link. Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper.www.homes4u.es 732

Enjoy an excerpt from our book - continued from last week Sharpen your axe and make sure you’re prepared for last-minute showings. Don’t be so strict in your boundaries that it becomes a pain to show the house. Have a plan to execute quickly. And just as important—get everyone in the family on the same page. When a buyer walks in, how will they see your home? The condition of your property will be inviting, repellent, or neutral. Neutral means nothing special. We want the buyer to KNOW your home is something special when they first set foot inside. Remove, fix, paint, or patch anything that makes the house look as if it isn’t ready to be sold. In Sales and Marketing 101, product positioning (the placement of your home, in this case) will make or break the sales experience and profitability. Present your home in its best condition, competitively priced with the best terms available, and the sale will be much more fluid. Home buyers seek a fresh, clutter-free environment with which to fall in love, one that appears to be well cared for and in good repair. As in fine dining—presentation is everything. In today’s world, preparation applies to the virtual environment, too. The average home buyer has already spent hours on the Internet searching for homes. They’ve watched the virtual tour and have seen inside your living room. Online, the photos may make your house look like a showroom or a model home. Will the on-site tour live up to the online images? Both impressions are equally important.

Ten sentenced to jail for planned Barcelona attacks Ten members of a jihadist cell linked to the Islamic State group (IS) who planned attacks in Barcelona and to film a decapitation have been sentenced to 8-12 years in jail. The defendants included five Moroccans, four Spaniards and a

another jihadist group killed 16 people in attacks there and on the nearby popular seaside city of Cambrils. The 10, whose cell was called "Islamic Fraternity, Group for preaching jihad," were sentenced for "belonging to a terrorist

Brazilian, the National Court, which handles terror cases, said in a ruling. They were "ready to wage an attack against institutions such as the police, banks or Jewish institutions in Spain at any time, or to join the ranks of Daesh," it added, using the Arabic acronym for IS. The cell was based in Terrassa, not far from Barcelona, the Catalonian capital. Last year,

organisation'" the court said. The three leaders of the group were given 12 years in jail while the seven others got eight years. In March 2015, the main leader of the cell, a Spaniard who had converted to Islam, proposed to kidnap and decapitate an "infidel" whom he had already identified, film the killing and then broadcast the video online before fleeing to Syria. He had previously proposed

that the group "commit an attack against the Catalan parliament, which no one had objected to," according to the court ruling. "He also justified decapitations and talked about making handmade bombs to commit attacks." Police found documents calling for jihad at his home and books on European organisations such as the Basque separatist group ETA or Germany's far-left Red Army Faction, the ruling said. Members of the cell had also gone on a recce in Barcelona, the Catalonian capital, where they took photos of the train station, a luxury seaside hotel, a shopping mall and a police station. One member went to Syria in April 2014 and died in Fallujah in Iraq the following year. Three others tried to follow in his footsteps at the end of 2014 but were detained at the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. According to the interior ministry, close to a third of all arrests for "jihadist terrorism" in Spain were made in Catalonia last year.

With limited funding from local government the parents of the clients have to support the charity financially. The young people spend up to eight hours a day at the centre learning various skills painting, cooking pottery and bicycle maintenance to name just a few. There is also professional help from a psychiatrist on site. Shortly to be moving to a new centre in San Pedro Sr. Jose Luis Martinez said that the €3000 donated from HELP will go towards decorating and fitting out the new centre. Los Amigos, locally known as Sam’s Bar, has been a supporter of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal since Sam took over the bar. Sam selected the Royal British Legion as her favoured charity and vowed to raise €5000 in five years. Originally a favourite haunt of the La Marina Branch, Sam’s Bar hosted many of their functions and collected for the Poppy Appeal in the process. After La Marina Branch joined with the Gran Alacant Branch, Sam continued to collect in the Poppy Boxes and by her fifth anniversary in February, she had collected the magnificent sum of €5611, including more than €1500 in the last year alone. To mark this superb achievement, The Gran Alacant and La Marina Branch Chairman, Robin Hargrave, obtained a Certificate from the Royal British Legion to present to Sam’s Bar/Los Amigos. During a Branch Lunch outing at Sam’s on the thirteenth of April, Robin duly

presented the Certificate to Sam in the company of the Branch Members. The Gran Alacant and La Marina Branch of the Royal British Legion meet on the first Monday of the Month at 18:00 in La Taberna, next to Monte Y Mar Restaurant & Bowls Club, Plaza Mayor, (Masa Square) Gran Alacant. Volunteers urgently required for Cats 'n' Dogs charity shop in Almoradí We are urgently seeking volunteers for the Cats 'N' Dogs charity shop in Almoradí (C/San Francisco 3, 03160) Days required Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 10am - 1.30pm. If you can offer some support for one day that would be much appreciated, currently the charity is being forced to close the shop often as the current team has been unable to find help. The Association cares for abandoned & neglected cats and dogs and needs to constantly raise funds to continue its important work. For further details about the charity and information on the volunteer opportunities please contact Irene: info@catsndogsaid.com

Samaritans in Spain (SiS) – A special message from the Listening Team Many of you will have heard and know of the work that the Samaritans UK do in the United Kingdom, perhaps less of you reading this article will know that we have a similar organisation running in Spain –SAMARITANS IN SPAIN is a registered national charity operating under licence from Samaritans UK offering a confidential, non-judgmental emotional support service in English for those in distress. The Spanish organisation is financed entirely by fundraising by the good people of the area, kind donations from individuals / organisations and monies generated by the charity shop at the Centro Commercial Punta Marina, Punta Prima. (Just off the Punta Prima roundabout on the N332). The charity shop is always grateful to receive good quality second hand clothing and bric-a-brac. If you have such items that you no longer need then please drop them off at the shop or the drop in centre next door. Regretfully we cannot take large items of furniture. We also always need shop volunteers. The SiS is undergoing a rapid period of change from a small local charity (formerly Costa Blanca Samaritans) to a larger nationwide organisation which supports the whole of the English-speaking community in Spain of any nationality. The call rate has increased four-fold in the last few years and expansion is constant. As such we are currently looking to

increase our pool of volunteers who manage the charity, listen on the phones, answer emails, volunteer in the shop, help with our awareness campaign etc. We always need people from the top to the bottom of the organisation, and if you have professional experience working in field such as financial management, HR, service delivery, income generation, we would be glad to hear from you as a potential Trustee Board Member. If you would be able to offer a few hours of your time manning the phones in our drop- in centre that would also be greatly received. Those volunteers who answer the phones are the key to our organisation, without these there would be no services to the English community in Spain. Volunteers normally live within one hours travel of Punta Prima and have a caring, able to listen, empathic personality, nearly everybody who thinks they may be able to do it, can! A short course of training must be undertaken to ensure that you are able to offer the service that our callers need, and show the integrity and confidentiality

Calls are FREE Freephone 900 525 100 SAMARITANS IN SPAIN

personalities required. This normally takes about five working days and then you are assigned to a mentor for a further few weeks to ensure that you have gained the required confidence to take calls without direct supervision. Calls taken at the centre and on the mobile duties (carried out during nonoffice opening hours) cover the whole range of people with problems that range from the small practical problem to those with more serious problems. All problems are treated with the same degree of importance, the range can cover marital/relationship problems, financial difficulties, anxiety, depression, anger, loneliness, homesickness, problems with employment or lack of it, bereavement, and yes occasionally suicidal of course and many many more. We at SAMARITANS IN SPAIN believe that everyone has the right to make fundamental decisions about their own life, including the decision to die by suicide. Your training will teach you to deal with all calls including the possible suicidal caller with the same empathic ear, to listen and to avoid giving advice. It will leave you with the confidence and skills to deal with all types of calls that come into the call centre. All volunteers have full ongoing support after the training and mentoring periods are finish by

our in house volunteer support team. At any time during the training you feel like you wish to reconsider, then this is fine, a pause or to finish completely is Ok if that is your wish. If you feel that you can give a few hours each week to help others in need either on the phones or in our Punta Marina centre, then perhaps the SAMARITANS IN SPAIN is just what you have been waiting for. Please contact us by email spainsamsrecruits@outlook.com or call our office number 966798230 to obtain an application form. We very much look forward to hearing from

you. THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF THE SAMARITANS IN SPAIN. For those people who have an urgent need of our services you can call our Helpline 24/7 365 days a year or email us if you prefer (we try to reply within 24 hours) If you prefer a more face to face conversation call in our drop in centre for a chat and a brew! At Centro Commercial PUNTA MARINA, PUNTA PRIMA, TORREVIEJA, ALICANTE. Hours of 10.00Am to 2.00PM Email pat@samaritans.com. More info at www.samaritansinspain.com

El Corte Inglés head calls for European online retail platform Department store chain El Corte Inglés is calling for a Europe-wide online shopping platform to be set up in order to compete with US giant Amazon and China's Alibaba, which would involve several major retailers working together. Chairman Dimas Gimeno also reiterated the need for legislation to be amended so that the same rules apply to all shopping sites operating on the continent. Building up alliances between conventional and online distributors would allow them all to 'build and grow together', even though they are competitors, Gimeno said at a recent conference organised by the Spanish Directors' and Executives' Confederation (CECE). A European-style Amazon site encompassing retailers from all over Europe would 'allow local trade to go global' and present 'new business opportunities beyond our immediate borders'. Companies which sell branded goods – and 70 percent of El Corte Inglés' wares are branded – would 'have a lot to gain', Gimeno believes, especially when negotiating online sales contracts. “Instead of companies spending extortionate amounts of money to set up their own online marketplaces, why don't

they all band together and set up a blanket one?” Gimeno questioned, although he admitted it would be 'a challenge with a capital C' requiring 'a great deal of energy'. El Corte Inglés is reportedly already starting talks with the aim of setting up an Amazon-style retail platform in the future. Gimeno stressed he was not criticising Amazon. “It's a spectacular company with an absolutely unbeatable model which forces all other distributors to pull their fingers out and from which the rest of us can only learn,” he argues , but says the 'problem' is that 'the digital transformation' is moving at such speed that laws governing this type of trade cannot keep up. “Online operators are not, at

present, subject to opening hours or location restrictions and, even more aggravatingly, enjoy an extremely advantageous tax situation,” Gimeno explains. “We need laws that allow all such distributors to compete on an equal playing field; at the very least, we need a European directive that makes us all equal in taxation terms. “I'm not calling for any type of out-of-date protectionism; just the same rules for everyone so that free competition conditions are not breached.” Gimeno admits, however, that El Corte Inglés has a great competitive advantage over purely online retailers, since it has a network of over 90 huge stores in 'excellent locations' which offer 'immediate access' for customers.

The Daniel v Lyons feud broke out in 2001, after a stash of cocaine was stolen, sparking years of gang warfare. Members Kevin “gerbil” Carroll, 29, and Michael Lyons, 21, were killed in a triple shooting in Lambhill, Scotland in 2006, while Steven Lyons, 37, was shot but survived. He then went on the run in the costa del sol and joined forces with an Irish drugs gang. Another gang affiliate, Billy Paterson, joined Lyons in the Costa del Sol some time later and was eventually jailed in 2015 for the murder of Carroll. However, according to the Daily Record, the drug lord’s attempts have been in vain as neither one of the gangs are willing to back down.

UK security forces ask expat for help The security agency in the UK has approached a Costa del Sol drug lord to make peace between two of Scotland’s most notorious and violent gangs. The British security services recruited the Spanish-based former criminal as a peacemaker in the hopes of ending a bloody Scottish gang war. In a bid to end the infamous Daniel v Lyons drug feud, which has held Scottish authorities to ransom for almost two decades, the expat was approached to encourage the rivals to agree to a truce. The wealthy criminal, in his 60s, was on business in London when he was contacted by representatives from mi5 or the national crime agency, reported the Scottish paper the Daily Record. It is not clear which secret intelligence agency approached the expat, who was once jailed after a huge heroin drug seize in Glasgow some years ago.

signed,” read the Spanish government’s agenda, without giving more details. Spain’s loss-making shipyards are placing a lot of hope on the planned sale of five corvettes, which has reportedly been under negotiation for two years. But rights groups have denounced it, saying the warships could be used in Saudi Arabia’s military campaign in Yemen. The NGOs coalition asked the royal palace and Spanish government aahead of the scheduled meeting “not to promote the signature of Spanish company Navantia’s contract to build five corvettes... for the Saudi army and to end arms exports to Saudi Arabia”. It also called on Spain “to join a growing number of countries like Germany, Sweden, Norway or Belgium that have stopped exporting arms to the Saudi coalition” fighting in Yemen, which also includes countries like the United Arab Emirates. The Saudi prince’s trip to Spain comes hot on the heels of a three-day official visit to France and after a tour lasting several weeks of the United States, Britain and Egypt, where the self-styled moderniser signed multimillion-dollar deals. Spain and Saudi Arabia’s royal families are very close as King Felipe VI’s father Juan Carlos was a close friend of the kingdom’s late King Fahd, who reigned from 1982 to 2005, and is close to his brother King Salman.

Master’s degree scandal deepens An investigation into alleged irregularities in the way a master’s degree was awarded to Madrid regional premier Cristina Cifuentes has now engulfed another member of her Popular Party (PP). King Juan Carlos University (URJC) is now investigating a similar degree awarded to Pablo Casado, a congressman and deputy secretary of communication for the PP. In 2009, Casado obtained the same academic qualification as Cifuentes, a master’s degree in public regional law from the URJC Public Law Institute (IDP). The growing scandal is casting a shadow over a public university with strong ties to the conservative group, and is eroding the PP’s hold on power in the Madrid region one year ahead of crucial local and regional elections. Speaking recently one morning on radio station Onda Cero, Casado detailed the requirements he was given at URJC in order to complete the course. “I was not required to attend class nor to take any exams. That was what I was told at the beginning of the program, and that was what happened in my case,” he explained. Casado later used a press conference to further elaborate on the situation, in response to the original story published last week by national Spanish newspaper El Pais. He again stated that he didn’t attend class, take exams or produce a final thesis to later defend it before a panel. He did so, he explained, because he was following the instructions of the head of the master’s program, Enrique Álvarez Conde. The latter is the director of the IDP, where Cifuentes obtained her own degree in 2012. By that time, however, the program had been adapted

to the European Union’s Bologna Process, which brought academic qualifications in line across Europe. Casado also explained that the university automatically waived 18 of the 22 courses from the degree – that’s to say, more than 80 percent of the coursework – given that he already had a degree in law from Madrid’s Complutense University. As such, he only had to produce four projects to pass the master’s program, totalling 92 pages of text. He added that he had also followed postgraduate programs at Harvard, Georgetown, Instituto de Empresa and IESE. “I did what I was asked to do,” Casado continued. “It didn’t seem strange to me. If there was something that wasn’t right, I was not aware of it.” Casado added that he was unaware if other students had received the same treatment. Casado is considered a likely Cristina Cifuentes replacement for Cifuentes with a view to the 2019 elections. So far, Cifuentes has openly rejected the idea of resigning over the scandal. Casado says he cannot recall whether he ever went to a class or not Cifuentes’ political career has been seriously compromised by revelations that she never completed the coursework for the degree, and that she may not have

defended her final thesis at all. When an online newspaper broke the story on 21st, Cifuentes produced a university document certifying that a threemember panel heard her dissertation on 2nd July, 2012. Crime But two of those individuals have since denied being there, or signing any documents. They and the Institute director have denounced pressure from top university officials to produce paperwork that would back up Cifuentes’ claim about completing her degree. Prosecutors have taken up the case, as forgery of public documents is a crime in Spain entailing prison terms of three to six years. University sources have said that an internal investigation headed by Professor Pilar Trinidad has now been widened to three other graduating classes at the URJC Public Law Institute, encompassing the time when Pablo Casado was a student there. Other well-

known alumni whose degrees are being scrutinized include former banker Mario Conde and political figures whose names have not yet been revealed. Last week, Casado told the Cadena SER radio station that as a student he reported to Institute director Enrique Álvarez Conde. “When it was time to hand in our research work, we did it through him,” said Casado. “I did what was asked of me.” Álvarez Conde told the Onda Cero radio station that the document sent to Cifuentes was a “reconstruction,” not an original document. The original record of Cifuentes’ thesis defence is nowhere in the university’s files, university president Javier Ramos has confirmed, also denying that he pressured Álvarez Conde into producing paperwork for Cifuentes. Professors who taught the program at the time said that attending class was mandatory Monday through Friday, as was taking the exams and defending a final thesis before an examining committee. One professor who taught the program told Spanish media that Casado was not on his student list for that year. Casado insisted that his degree is different to Cifuentes’, because in 2008 the university was not yet adhering to the Bologna Process, which harmonized higher-education studies across the European Union. As such, he said, his qualification was not properly a master’s degree, but an intermediary step towards a doctorate, which he never completed for lack of time. In 2008-2009, Pablo Casado was a regional deputy in the Madrid assembly and sat on two committees. He was also president of the PP’s youth group Nuevas Generaciones.

Tenerife inferno threatens Teide National Park A violent blaze in southern Tenerife close to Teide National Park has already wiped out 544 acres. As yet, nobody has been evacuated as the nearest towns, Vilaflor and Granadilla de Abona, are five kilometres away. However, high winds sweeping the Canary Islands, and the rest of Spain, are fanning the flames and if the inferno is not contained soon, this situation may change and evacuations may be necessary. Hydroplanes and helicopters have been brought in to try and tackle the blaze due to the altitude and the fact that the flames are gradually gaining height. Emergency services had to tackle the blaze from the ground at first, since airborne methods cannot be used in the dark. A hiker discovered the fire and immediately called emergency services. The island council, or Cabildo, in Tenerife has said that it suspects that the inferno is the work of arsonists – or at least caused by human negligence.

‘La Ballena’ bites Europeans in Britain 'at risk' after Brexit the dust It’s been a monstrosity for some time now. The building, known locally as ‘La Ballena’ or the whale, has finally been demolished. It has been a long process to bring down this abandoned and dilapidated block with its town centre location. The need for caution in the demolition process has been part of the problem. It has taken four months of work from a specialist company to make sure that this five storey building was finally laid to rest. It has been abandoned since 2006 when those living in it had an eviction order placed on them due to the precarious condition of the building. From then until 2011, efforts have been made to ensure that the 29 different owners either put forward a renovation project or had the building demolished. However, as this was never achieved the local government began the process on its own and accepted that it would also have to pay the bill along with it. The building may now be down but the job isn’t quite complete. Anyone passing by the site will notice the tonnes of rubble that are still there and will need to be removed. Dividing walls will also need to be secured and a new fence erected. All this work is already included in the price of

the contract. It has been a difficult operation for the demolition company who had to complete the work by hand to avoid the structure collapsing. There was also a hold up when Iberdrola had to come and disconnect the electricity. The fact that this has also taken place during the holiday season has not helped matters. However, for those neighbours who have lived with vandalism,

infestations of mice and a colony of cats over the years, the removal of this eyesore will be very welcome. The town hall has had to foot the cost of the demolition ata cost of €230,000. They will attempt to pass on some of this to the owners, whoinclude some banksas well also second-home owners. However, it is unlikely that they will have much luck with this and are likely to remain out of pocket. Suzanne O’Connell

Thousands of Europeans who live in the UK, including a high number of Spanish nationals, could lose their basic rights following Brexit – and children, the elderly and victims of domestic violence are the most at risk, says the Migration Observatory at Oxford University. Even if they meet all the requirements for remaining permanently in Britain once the country leaves the European Union, problems in presenting the required paperwork to obtain 'settled status' could leave them in a situation similar to that of an 'illegal' immigrant and losing their right to stay. The Observatory's report warns that thousands of Europeans in the UK may not understand that they need to go through this paper trail, meaning they would lose their residence rights without even realising and discover their situation when it is too late. “The Interior Ministry is attempting to create a system whi9ch is easy and direct, and the majority of European citizens should be able to get through this simplified process with few problems,” the Migration Observatory's director Madeleine Sumption says. “But for a minority of people, the process will be much harder.” She cites those who are

'socially isolated', victims of 'exploitation', and 'personal barriers' such as poverty or mental illness. Also, parents of the tens of thousands of children born in the UK mistakenly believe, in most cases, that their kids are automatically considered as having 'settled status' and enjoying the same rights as a British child. This means the parents may not apply for residence on behalf of their children, who could, in theory, be 'deported'. Another group at serious risk are the 140,000 or so Europeans who have lived in the UK for over 30 years, and the 56,000 EU nationals there aged over 75. They include numerous Spaniards, principally from the Basque Country, in their 80s or 90s who were evacuated to Britain during the Civil War and stayed there, as well as dissenters who fled to the UK during Franco's régime or who moved there to find work during times of extreme poverty in Spain. Those who have been in Britain for most or all of their adult lives may already hold documents which accredit their 'permanent right to remain', and believe that as a result, they do not have to apply for 'settled status' – whereas, in fact, they do, or they will be considered

'illegal immigrants'. Europeans in 'particularly vulnerable' situations, Madeleine Sumption says, could also fall foul of Brexit – victims of domestic violence, including psychological abuse and excessive control, may be in a situation where they rely on their partners to deal with their paperwork, or may be prevented from leaving the house or using the internet to do so themselves. Settled status Britain's Interior Ministry plans to open the 'settled status' process this year so that the more than three million EU citizens living in the country can register, allowing them to keep their residence rights and work permits. Only those who have lived in the UK for five years or more by the end of the year 2020, when the Brexit 'transition period' expires, can apply for 'settled status'. Anyone who has not lived there long enough by this date can remain in the UK until they have acquired five years of continuous residence, then they will be required to apply for 'settled status'. Brexit will formally take place on March 29, 2019, but during the transition period, the UK will remain subject to EU rules and to the benefits of the single market, albeit without any decisionmaking power.

Professional first aid training in English The Cruz Roja is pleased to announce that it has organised a series of professional first aid courses, to be given in English to benefit the local community. Each course, which is subsidised to make them affordable, will run over two day with five hours training on each day. The first course has 15 places and will take place on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th April from 9am to 2pm at the Casa Cultura in Benijofar. The courses will continue as long as there is demand from local people who wish to learn life saving and first aid training. The places are open to anyone, from any local area and a second one is already being planned as places are taken on the first. New flower fans at U3A Earlier this month saw the opening of the Torrevieja U3A new Group for Flower Arranging. It is being run by Marjorie who worked as a full time florist for many years in the UK before deciding her future lay in sunny Spain were she has been made more than welcome by the U3A as a whole and it is hoped that the group will grow and flourish! The group meets in San Miguel sports centre i n the afternoons of the first Wednesday of each

month. For fuller details of this, and all of the other groups, visit the website torreviejau3a.org. The photo shows four of the ladies who attended the inauguration and are proudly showing off their first attempts in this art.

Dallas Meyers Music lovers from all over the Torrevieja area met at La Siesta Church on Monday April 9th to say a fond ‘farewell’ to Dallas Meyers who passed away suddenly on March 31st. Dallas was a much loved member of several choirs and musical societies in the area… ..Crescendo, Velvetones, Vivace, Andante, Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Studio 32, and La Siesta Church choir. The service was taken by Pastor Keith Brown and included eulogies from her family who had come from England.

Crescendo choir sang Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and the Blessing of Aaron, and everyone joined in singing her favourite hymns. Donations made are to be given to Age Concern and the British Heart Foundation. At the wake following the service, Velvetones Ladies Barbershop sang two songs and Sue Woodward-Prior read a specially written ode all about Dallas. She will be sadly missed by many people, not only for her beautiful soprano voice, but for her friendliness to everyone she

Ode to Dallas It’s time I think for an ode to Dallas As her sudden demise really seems quite callous She was a goodly mum and a loving wife Who enjoyed leading a really full life.

met. Goodbye Dallas, God be with you.

Her voice was often heard ringing As in Crescendo and Vivace she was singing. She loved her time with Studio 32 And most recently sang with Andante too.

She loved to act and play her part And so it was from the very start She used her lovely soprano voice And sang in choirs of her choice.

Singing, you see, so enriched her life. Despite the health problems that caused her strife She greeted everyone with a beaming smile That all will remember for many a while.

In Velvetones and G&S There her talents she could express And as one of the fat fairies three With Barbara and Sue opened Iolanthe.

She was always there a hand to lend To so many she was a true friend. And so it is she will be greatly missed As she’s played her last part in life’s cast list.

When G&S folded and came to an end GASPS was formed those friendships to extend. With holidays in the Canaries and cruising the Med We had a great time it must be said.

Let’s raise a glass to Dallas Myers Who sang with friends in different choirs And whose life was always spent With love and every good intent. Sue Woodward-Prior 2018.

Improved view for Punta Prima The Municipal Department of Beaches, which is headed by Councillor Luisa Boné, has carried out the refurbishment of the viewpoint on the promenade of Punta Prima. The viewpoint on the seafront was in a very bad condition. The sidewalk was damaged with numerous loose stone slabs and the pergola had only half of the prefabricated beams, as they deteriorated steadily due to years of wear and tear. The balustrade had numerous broken sections. The city councillor said: “We from the Municipal Department of Beaches felt it necessary to renovate this viewpoint, because it was possible to turn it into one

of the most beautiful enclaves of our coast, where we can sit down and enjoy the wonderful view." "The work consisted of the demolition of the old structure, the preparation of the soil and the construction of a 24-metrelong and 4-metre-wide pergola made of white wood, the cover of which consists of planks which are separated from each other and so allow for a shadowed effects.” She added that the beams and planks along the pergola were placed in such a way as to create the optical effect of a wave, ideal for the enclave in which the pergola is located. And a railing was installed with the same planks from

which the pergola was built to add symmetry and better aesthetics. The stone floor was replaced by a wooden grey floor that matches the colour of the pillars. Four grey wooden benches in a modern style complete the viewpoint and give it the pleasing look that the government team wanted to achieve. The city councillor for beaches pointed out that the cost of renewing the viewpoint at Punta Prima is equivalent to an investment of €37,458 including VAT and added that the Municipal Department of Beaches will continue to slowly improve all the facilities that are located on the beach or in the immediate vicinity. Councillor Bone shows off the new look

New tourist and cultural routes for spring Councillor Sofía Álvarez presented the new guided tours organised by the Town Hall for this spring, which will be held every weekend until 17th June. The details are being announced well in advance so that tourists can more easily plan their holidays. The tours can be taken in Spanish and English, and focus on local heritage and monuments, the poet Miguel Hernández and exploring Orihuela Costa. A guided tour of the Murals of San Isidro will take place on Saturday 21st April and one of the most important places in the life of Miguel Hernández on Saturday 28th April. In May there will be a Cultural Tour of the city’s national monuments on Saturday 5th and one along the seaside promenades of the coast, leaving from Cabo Roig, on Sunday the 7th. On 16th June there will be another Miguel Hernández tour and a Cultural Tour at night, and on the 17th June there will be activities at the ports and marinas in Orihuela Costa. For more information and to book places, visit or call the Tourist Info offices either in Orihuela city: 96 530 4645 or 96 530 2747 or Playa Flamenca Town Hall office in Orihuela Costa: 96 676 0000 ext 32 or email orihuelaplaya@touristinfo.net Holy Week The councillor took the opportunity to summarise the tourist visits to the municipality during Holy Week, which this year increased its figures "not only in the occupancy of hotels and tourist apartments, which has reached 95 percent", but also in the increase in visits to the Information Centres and Tourism

Offices of both Orihuela city and the coast. There was also an increase in the number of nationalities that visited the tourist offices to enquire about planned activities, monuments and customs of the area. More than 80 different nationalities visited Orihuela, explained the Councillor which is double the amount from last year. Likewise, Álvarez indicated that there has also been a significant growth in the number of people interacting with the website and social networks of the Department of Tourism on www.orihuelaturistica.es demonstrating, she said, how the municipality ‘has managed to position itself as one of the key destinations for which tourists head for the Easter celebrations’. Local cocaine traffickers caught Guardia Civil and the Customs Agency have arrested 20 men and a woman in Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja, and El Campello for being members of an important international drug trafficking organisation. The suspects are of Spanish, Colombian, British, Moroccan, Serbian and Bulgarian nationalities. Operation “Alicafé” started almost a year ago when officers detected a shipment of cocaine at ‘Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas’ airport destined for Torrevieja. It was very pure and mixed with coffee to make it harder for sniffer dogs to detect. The Organised Crime and Antidrug Team (EDOA) found the shipments were being prepared and sent from Colombia, sent by post then taken to laboratories in Orihuela Costa, or Torrevieja , where the cocaine was cut down to make more doses then distributed around the Vega Baja. The group communicated using encrypted applications rather than telephones, so the investigation required specialist officers. It had connections with criminal networks in the UK so the Guardia Civil collaborated with the British police as well as the Colombian authorities. Another organisation member came from the UK to Alicante to buy large quantities of drugs and take it back. To pay for this he had robbed an armoured car of about €200,000, which led to his arrest by the Guardia Civil. The arrests were made in three phases. There were 11 properties searched in Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja and 21

arrests: 5 Spaniards (ages 24-55), 12 Colombians (ages 27-52), one from the UK (age 44), a Moroccan (38), a Serbian (27) and a Bulgarian woman (24). The Guardia Civil accuse them of drug trafficking, possession of weapons, robbery with violence and intimidation, and belonging to a criminal organisation. After appearing at a Torrevieja court they have all been sent to prison apart from one who has to present himself to the court on the 1st and 15th of every month. The Guardia Civil dismantled two drug laboratories and a distribution centre for 10 points of sale in Alicante province. They seized over 12 kilos of cocaine, 320 grams of amphetamine, 3.4 kilos of cutting substances and small quantities of marijuana and hashish. the organisation had €30,000 and £51,960 in cash, a pen pistol ready to be fired, a top of the range car and various laboratory equipment. It is estimated they could have made over a million euros from the ten points of sale.

Workshops in the craft fair of Jávea Port are get very popular Every Sunday morning between 10 and 15 craft people from the area come together on the sea side boulevard in the Port of Jávea to set up their stalls. Some weeks ago they decided to include a workshop for children in their little fair. These workshops have proved to be very popular: every Sunday at midday the children crowd around the table where one of the craft people teaches them to make a bracelet, a little sculpture or some juggling balls. As the participants take turns, the children can learn something different every Sunday. The craft market in Jávea Port is quite special, in that everything sold is made by the people on the stalls. Thus you can be sure that you can find something original for a reasonable price, as you buy directly from the artist or artisan. The fair is advertised with the label "Artesanía de Autor®". The stalls open at 11 am and stay till 3 pm or later. The workshop is at 12 noon and is free. For more information (also in English) you can ring the organizers, craft association Amata, at 639 979 678. At http://www.amata.es/JavSunSpr_18.ht ml you can see some photographs of previous Sundays.

Daytime Running Lights on Motorbikes The installation of Daytime Running Lights has become the norm for more modern vehicles, where additional illumination would allow other road users to have a heightened awareness of approaching vehicles. However, this development has not been without its own problems, sometimes caused by the lack of knowledge by the driver, but also on occasion caused by the slowness in having laws adapted to satisfy the technology. Firstly, we must be aware that Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are not a replacement for headlights. In fact, they are completely different. Many versions of Daytime Running Lights also switch off intermittently when the turning indicators are used so as not to distract from the purpose of those lights. Again, to stress their purpose of DRL, they are to make the vehicle more visible to other road users. Unlike headlights, they are not designed to illuminate the path for the driver. That is what headlights are for. There have been numerous instances of drivers being seen and stopped whilst

their vehicle only has Daytime Running Lights illuminated when headlights are required, such as at night or whilst driving through tunnels. In these circumstances, headlights must be switched on. More recently, motorcycles have also seen Daytime Running Lights fitted to the front. However, for bikers there was another problem, in that the law dictates that headlights must be illuminated on motorbikes during the day. The legislation did not allow for any variation on this, and so there have been numerous riders fined for riding whilst only having their Daytime Running Lights illuminated and not their headlights. However, as of a change in the law, Daytime Running Lights have been incorporated into the legislation and are legally accepted as being adequate illumination for motorbikes during the normal daylight hours and suitable conditions. Instruction number 15/S-140 /V-112 clarifies that under European Legislation, category “L vehicles (mopeds of two or

three wheels, motorcycles with or without sidecar, tricycles, light quadricycles and quadricycles) are incorporated into the laws regarding the use of Daytime Running Lights. The legislation makes a clear distinction between Daytime Running Lights and low-beam headlights. Low-beam lights are used to illuminate the road ahead of the vehicle without causing undue dazzle or discomfort to drivers coming in the opposite direction, or to other road users. Daytime Running Lights face forward and are used to make the vehicle more visible in daylight. The directive also clarifies the required colour of the Daytime Running Lights, stating that the only permitted colours are white or amber. Motorcycles must be visible to other road users on the grounds of road safety, but as Daytime Running Lights have been developed for this purpose, manufactured specifically to meet this objective, they are acceptable under normal daytime conditions of visibility.

Hay fever season and driving Transferring a vehicle It´s that time of year once again when we must remind ourselves how suffering from allergies and being a driver are a combination of factors that poses a potential risk on the roads. In a recent campaign by the DGT, it is revealed how a sneezing fit of just 5 seconds, means that a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour covers a distance of 125 metres, the distance greater than a football field, when the driver´s attention is distracted as a result. The sneezing fit can often last longer than 5 seconds though, perhaps 8, 10 or more, with the vehicle continuing to travel without the driver´s full attention. On a normal, dry road, the overall stopping distance for a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour is calculated at 65.7 metres, just half of the distance covered during our 5 second sneezing fit. During the reaction time alone, the vehicle would have travelled 25 metres. In other words, in the event of an incident ahead, there would not be enough time to react and stop. Sneezing is only one symptom of an allergic reaction, most commonly Hay Fever at this time of year, severe itching of the eyes, irritation, congestion or a runny nose, light sensitivity and many more combinations of symptoms, all make driving particularly problematic for sufferers. Drugs to combat the physical symptoms can help ease the dreaded onset of Hay Fever, but some of these drugs also cause problems with driving, sometimes causing drowsiness, or other problems, and can interact with prescribed medication. Sufferers of Hay Fever might have already realised that the pollen season

has started early once again in Spain, but it can vary depending on the geographical location. Within the car, keeping the vehicle clean, inside and out, can remove much of the residual pollen, as can the installation of filters in the air distribution system. Keeping windows closed, wearing sunglasses and avoiding key problematic times such as dawn and dusk can all ease the symptoms. All antihistamines sold in Spain should carry a pictogram on their packaging, depicting a car within a danger warning signal, which is designed to alert drivers of the possible

effects on the ability to drive safely. However, it may not be present on imported medication. But, if you see this sign you need to be aware that your driving ability is likely to be affected. If you are taking any medication, make sure you read the instruction leaflet, or check with your doctor or pharmacist about interactions with other medication and driving. The website from the Sociedad Española de Aerobiología, www.polenes.com, can offer information within Spain, and allows you to select the different regions to see the current status of pollen and help you plan your driving activities.

following death

We have been asked many times about this topic, one which is both sensitive and necessary to answer. In the event of a vehicle owner passing away, is there a standard procedure for having the vehicle ownership transferred to a living beneficiary? Article 609 of the Civil Code dictates the modes of acquiring ownership of property succession, and the administrative procedure set out in Article 32.6 of the Reglamento de Vehículos details the process. PROVISIONAL TRANSFER OF A VEHICLE Immediately after a death, the vehicle can be transferred to a new named owner who may not be the long-term benefactor, but may seek ownership on a temporary basis. In this event, the temporary custodian of the vehicle has 90 days in which they must notify the traffic department of this temporary custody and their legal address. The person registering the vehicle must produce the following to the traffic department: A formal request: The payment for transfer (the prices in 2015 are 52.80€ for most vehicles, 26.40€ for mopeds) Identity documents : Death certificate of the original owner or marriage certificate stating the death Document proving the possession of the vehicle, Driving license ITV card or technical status document of the vehicle An appointment at the traffic office The new provisional holder is deemed as the subject of any obligations corresponding to the holder of the vehicle. FINAL TRANSFER OF THE VEHICLE The intended permanent vehicle owner must apply for the final transfer of the vehicle within a 90 day period. The intended permanent owner must submit the same documentation as above, but with two additions: Certificate of liquidation or exemption from inheritance tax. Declaration of heirs, or will, accompanied by

a certificate of wills, or document stating the award of the vehicle. You must also request a printed official form that will facilitate the transfer of the vehicle by the traffic department on behalf of the state. If the applicant is a minor or incapacitated, the documentation must also include the additional data and signature of the legal guardian or representative. You will also have to pay the fees for the transfer. If the applicant is an individual and a Spanish national, the National Identity Document (DNI) can be used in place of the driving license. If the applicant is a person of foreign nationality, there are other processes to consider. If a Green Card is in force, that must also be presented, or, failing that, the official Identity of the country of origin (for citizens of other Member States of the European Union, the other States party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation) or Passport or Certificate of Citizenship if you are a citizen of a third country with the Foreigner Identification Number (NIE). You may also have to produce the original document attesting to your home in Spain if you are not registered with foreign identity documents (e.g. certificate of ownership, lease, or police census card or certificate). If the new owner is a legal entity or company, rather than an individual, you will also be required to produce the following: Original Tax identification card (CIF). Original ID, passport, identity card and NIE Original document attesting to power to act on behalf of the company (available from the www.dgt.es website). The process seems a very complicated one, especially given the time frame in which it must be completed, but the process is also a standard administrative procedure and so your advisor or lawyer will be able to advise you further. Always obtain advice from registered, legal representatives in Spain if there is any doubt.

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

What’s that? Manchester City led a game at halftime and went on to win? Are you sure? I thought they had soft mentalities and all that? Surely, you cannot mean that they are actually worthy winners of the Premier League? But they had lost their last three big matches! Finished, they were. Finished I tell you! Yes, the unthinkable happened at Wembley. No, not Tottenham Hotspur losing at the ground we all once thought was a curse to them. Manchester City dominated a first half of football and didn’t balls it up in the second half. And, as a result, they threw the baton over to West Bromwich Albion who only had to beat Manchester United to allow City to be crowned Premier League Champions. Are we still thinking Hugo Lloris is in the same class as David de Gea? God, I hope not. He had another poor game as City shook off the disappointment of the previous ten days. Yeah OK, they’re still very disappointed. Especially after Liverpool drew Roma. Speaking of King Kloppo’s men, they eased past Bournemouth 3-0 with Mohamed Salah scoring his 40th of the season. Yes, 40. It doesn’t matter how

many goals Harry Kane claims he touched last, Salah is going to win the golden boot and has, potentially, seven more games to catch Ian Rush’s all-time Liverpool record of 47 in a season. But, enough about Salah. We all know he is good. What about Trent AlexanderArnold? 19 years old, a local lad and he is making that right back position his own. And, being English, everyone wants him on the plane to Russia this summer. Let’s not ruin him just yet, please? With five games to go, who would you back to finish 6th? Arsenal or Burnley? Yeah, me too. It’s all about Sean Dyche’s men. The Ginger Mourinho has said he is happy to take on the ‘hassle’ of a Europa League campaign next season and 6th will definitely secure that honour. Or, if Arsenal do suddenly fancy playing like they can play, 7th might still be enough for Burnley providing Southampton don’t win the FA Cup. I know, right? Like that’s going to happen. Burnley started like a steam train as Leicester City seemed to be bringing their grievances against Claude Puel on to the pitch. That’s unlike Leicester, right? Putting in a poor shift because ‘they’ve lost faith in the manager’. The only issue with that is that Jamie Vardy loves scoring goals too much, so he almost made a game of it by making it 2-1. Unfortunately for him, the rest of the side are already looking forward to

seeing what the new man in charge looks like next season. As for Arsenal, they might well win the Europa League and find a backdoor entry into next season’s Champions League. But, that doesn’t mean they didn’t lose 2-1 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday. It’s almost as if they like messing with their fans, but I’ve been saying that for years. As for Arsene Wenger, if you do win the Europa League, leave a happy man rather than a broken one. Please. Having watched Manchester United, Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba cut loose at the Etihad last weekend you’d have been right to assume that they would pick up where they left off when West Bromwich Albion came to play at Old Trafford. WBA would be relegated if they lost and City would be crowned champions if they won. But surely, United with their new found ability to score three goals in a half, would obliterate WBA with a mouthwatering display? You nearly bought into that, didn’t you! Silly reader. Of course that is not what happened. You see, the second half at the Etihad was the exception, not the rule United simply regressed to their mean - they became once again what they already are. Dull. Ponderous. Very unlikely to break down a team quite happy to stick 11 men behind the ball, even if those 11 men are wearing the strip of WBA. And

CD Montesinos 3 – 1 CD Dolores Team:- Dani, Fernando, Manu, Manu Sanchez, Luis, Vaz, Dani Saez, Pastor, Dario, Joao and Maccan. Sub’s:- Aitor, Patri, Alfredo, Manu Saez, German. Scorers:- Vazquinho (2) and Joao CD Montesinos continued their remarkable run in this league, exceeding all predictions that a newly promoted side could be so high in the league. However, the early exchanges with CD Dolores showed them to be up for a good game and Monte’s defence were put to test right from the start. Three successive corners were competently dealt with by two saves from Monte keeper Dani and his defenders whilst another Dolores chance went begging as the ball was cleared for a corner. However, from the resulting corner, Dolores took the lead. From that moment onwards, normal service was resumed as Monte took control of the game. Monte pushed forward with numerous attacks on the Dolores goal although their keeper was agile for his small size as he kept the home side at bay as a shot from Vaz was saved on the line, and another shot from Vaz went over the bar. But a pass from Dani on his left wing, was headed by a Dolores defender towards his own goal, the keeper could only punch the ball, and Vaz was there for this, heading the ball into the goal. 1 – 1 at half-time. The second half started at the same frenetic pace, with Monte continuing to have control in the centre of the field, constantly pushing forward. The ball went to Manu Sanchez on the left wing and he dribbled his way through the Dolores

defence and he then sent the ball inward, where Vaz, the division´s top scorer, scored a fabulous goal from behind the Dolores defence. In his excitement Vaz took off his shirt and ran to the Monte faithful, receiving a booking for doing so. 2 – 1 to Monte. A few minutes later a corner from Monte’s left side saw the ball float into the packed defence to be met by centre half Joao who soared into the air and scored a wonderful goal which capped an impressive display on his return from injury. 3 – 1 to Monte.

Man of the Match was goalkeeper Dani, who pulled off some remarkable saves with his athleticism. Even the referee appeared to shake his hand at the end of the game, and then he was mobbed by his team-mates. The award could have gone to several players including Luis, Maccan and of course Vaz. A difficult job for the sponsor The Full Monte. An enjoyable game, which put Monte into 3rd place behind Intercity and Horadada who will almost certainly be the two promoted sides in this group.

then West Brom only went and scored. Jay-Rod, rightly cleared of being a racist during the week, scored from a setpiece that Tony Pulis would have been proud of. And so, in the pouring rain of Manchester, the bottom side bought themselves an unlikely stay of execution and clinched the title for the side the other side of town. It almost makes you wonder if it was worth United coming back from 2-0 down last week. When Southampton found themselves 2-0 up at home to Chelsea, two things were going through my mind. Firstly, I was prepared to accept I might be wrong on my claim that Mark Hughes would fail to win a Premier League match as Southampton manager. Secondly, the image of Antonio Conte slumped in his chair out 5 minutes before his team for the second half showed me a man who really, really could not care less anymore. And then, in the blink of an eye, Chelsea were winning 3-2. How? Alvaro Morata, mate. No, not that he did anything on the pitch that instigated a comeback, oh no. Being subbed for being totally ineffective was the best thing Alvaro offered on Saturday. And his replacement did alright when he came on. Olivier Giroud came on, scored twice and nabbed man-of-the-match all in 30 minutes. It’s easy work if you can get it.

It wasn’t a bad half of football in the first 45 minutes at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace and Brighton hate each other, but that did not stop them putting on a goalfest in the first period before realising they were all getting a bit carried away and providing no further goals in the second half. Amazingly, Palace scored three in a game and none of them were penalties. Wilf Zaha showed us all what he is truly capable of if he stays on his feet, scoring his first ever top-flight brace. As Roy Hodgson said, he “died a few deaths” watching that one. To put it simply, Watford are a disgrace. We know that though, eh? Do enough to stay up, call it a job done for the season. Tom Ince scored a late, late goal for Huddersfield to give them hope of staying up. Finally today, how dull are Everton? I mean, really. How dull? They did absolutely nothing against Swansea City, yet found themselves in the lead. Then, they let Swansea back in it. What summed it all up though, remembering Everton are playing a team threatened by relegation, was Sham Allarfarce sending on Funes Mori for Yannick Bolasie to help them close out the 1-0. Yeah, you know what happened next.

The Plaza Golf Society Golfer named adoptive son of In this penultimate game of the season The Plaza Golf Society commenced battle at a parched Saurines, regarded by many as the most tricky of the IRM courses. There was only 1 player claiming the 2’s pot with a wonderful shot into the difficult par 3 18th, well done Alan Carter. NTP'S where kindly sponsored by The Ale House, a warm and friendly bar in the Villamartin Plaza, Ronnie Temple, Joost Boelhouwer, Dean Tracy, Alan Carter and Declan Crowley all receiving €10 vouchers. Rojales in emotional ceremony Professional golfer Miguel Ángel Jiménez, born in Málaga in 1964, who has won countless national and international titles, had never been made an Adopted Son of a municipality until now, and given his links with La Marquesa Golf course in Quesada, Rojales has now bestowed the title upon him. He was presented by the Mayor Antonio Pérez and Councillor Pedro Llopis with a diploma and medal in a formal and emotional ceremony that also had some more light hearted moments. One of these was when the Mayor quipped that it was his first time as an adoptive father saying “this one is all grown up and we like him like this” and again when Jiménez said “I will always be there for you, and above all because I have new parents and I don’t know if I should call the Mayor papa”. Pérez said they had given him the title because the personal and professional

trajectory of Jiménez would bring more glory and fame to the municipality, and golf “is a sport that trains people to be part of society and promotes health and the virtues of coexistence and social recognition”. Also because the golfer has been coming to Rojales for almost 26 years to relax, practise or play in events at

its golf course “always in an unselfish and enthusiastic manner”. Miguel Ángel Jiménez said with emotion to the councillors and numerous public who had filled the room at the Town Hall that that it was an honour which made him proud and happy. Mireille Toddington

Your Week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Ah, sport. What a wonderful thing. Are there many other industries that are so utterly dependant on the weather? Tourism, maybe. But then there is always tomorrow for tourism. There’s rarely a tomorrow if it is Day Four of the cricket County Championship. And with that thought, last Friday 13th, with snow, rain and high winds all over the UK, the new cricket season got underway in England. I know, madness, right? It’s barely cricket weather in Spain currently, let alone Durham. As I write this column on Sunday afternoon, the BBC tell me that there is currently no play in Warwickshire, Hampshire, Lancashire or Yorkshire. The reason? Bad light or rain, take your pick.

There’s also no play at Middlesex but only because they beat Northants by 160 runs, mainly due to skittling them for 76 in their first innings. Tea is being had in Kent, where the home county will be praying for rain or bad light as Gloucestershire only need 79 to win. You thought the Northants first innings score was poor? Kent rolled over for 64. Mind you, Gloucestershire only managed 110. As ever, the ECB have their fingers on the pulse of Test cricket packing all the 4 day stuff into the first couple of months of the season and the last month of the season where the wickets will do nothing other than favour the dibbly-dobbler of the English cricket circuit - hardly conducive to finding someone of scaring the bejesus out of the Australians with sheer, frightening pace.

medals, but not in the women’s netball where England won gold on the siren. England came second in the gold medal haul, beating India into third place. Wales and Scotland finished 7th and 8th, just ahead of Nigeria. It’s important not to underplay the importance of England’s netball win Australia have dominated it forever and every previous final had been between Australia and New Zealand. The Chinese Grand Prix was quite exciting, if you could raise yourself from your bed in time to watch it live. Daniel

The Commonwealth Games are finally over. You’d like some highlights, I suppose. Australia won the most gold

Ricciardo won it as Max Verstappen clipped Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton came fourth, with Vettel ending up in eighth place as a result of the coming together.

ABBEY ANGLING We fished the 5th round of the Spring Series on the river Segura at Murcia on the 10th April. When is this wind ever going to stop, and it was a really cold day as well, this is probably the reason the weights are being kept down, although quite a few big fish were hooked and lost. Fishing does seem to be better on the higher numbers above the bridge, and today Richard Wood was on top form to take first spot with over 14kgs, coming in second place was Bob Larby probably the oldest member in the Club with 10.660kgs, which just goes to show a good fisherman is never too old!!, and following up in third place was Ron Salsbury with 9.600kgs. Everyone caught and there were no D.N.W.’s 1st Richard Wood with 14.240kgs 2nd B Larbey with 10.660kgs 3rd Ron Salsbury with 9.600kgs All fishing the feeder using pellet and 6mm ringers chocolate wafters or corn and pellet There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club

RODS & REELS It was our annual Charity Match this week at the El Bosquet Complex B Section on the 11th April. The wind was horrendous making it virtually impossible to hold the pole, but thank goodness there were only a couple of breakages this week. Ron Salsbury taking top spot today after his third place win yesterday ,he weighed in with 7.920kgs, in second place was Neil McBirnie with 6.720kgs and following up in third spot was Dave Hoare with 4.600kgs 1st Ron Salsbury with 7.920kgs fishing the pole using bread and pellet 2nd Neil McBirnie with 6.720kgs fishing the pole using bread 3rd Dave Hoare with 4.600kgs fishing the pole using bread There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423 TIGHT LINES Terry Screen

SIZE MATTERS:

Don’t pay MORE for LESS!

The Grand National was quite exciting, honest. Tiger Roll won by a nose in a photo finish. According to the Guardian, the winning horse is "is a horse with whom the watching millions could identify. Like most of us, Tiger Roll has always had his good days and bad days – and when it mattered most he had the best day of all". That's nice, isn't it.

San Miguel Golf Society Just eleven days into April saw 40 members and 3 guests trundle a short distance south down the AP7 to visit the “local Lake District” or La Serena, to give this tricky track its correct name. Many golfers across a wide range of handicaps approach this course with the vast majority fully expecting the 16 holes containing water hazards to swallow up their fair share of balls! A chilly morning, but drenched in tranquil sunshine, greeted the early arrivals as the outlook for the day's weather prospects looked quite optimistic until the sun disappeared and the area was once again gripped by the recent spell of cool, cloudy conditions with a stiff breeze adding to the difficulty. Serena itself means calm, peaceful and settled but by mid morning it was far

from any of those – “windy and wild” was a more fitting description. “Keep left” is the local rule for avoiding most of the trouble but even the 15th, an unassuming par 3 of some 140 mts, became a hole which demanded some respect – out of the 45 tee shots, not one stayed on the green !! Our thanks go to the team at La Serena for an enjoyable day and if they could just turn up the heat a touch for our next visit, we'd be obliged. Next week sees us visiting Vistabella and you can keep up to date with all our news and fixtures by logging onto www.smgs.org Results for the Stableford competition were as follows:

Best guest - Richard Morgan with 28 points. Abacus prize – Hayden Williams. Nearest the Pins – Micky Roscoe (Hole 3), Chris Hamblett (Hole 9) John Aitchison (Hole 17). Bronze division - 4th Norman McBride (28c/b). 3rd Marit Ronsen (28c/b). 2nd Ralph Tilbrook (31) & 1st Charlie Harkin (38). Silver division - 4th Phil Birtwistle (28). 3rd Mike Greatorex (30) 2nd Mike Inns (31) & 1st Theo Boelhouwer (34). Gold division - 4th John Aitchison (34c/b). 3rd John Osborne (35). 2nd Eva Pettersson (36) & 1st Barry Roehrig (38) which was also a good enough round in the singles knock-out to beat Willy Fenn 7 & 5 – well played, Barry.

RAJAN NAYER SUSPENDED FROM ALL CRICKET ACTIVITY FOR 20 YEARS The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that it has suspended Rajan Nayer from all cricket activity for 20 years after he accepted a charge of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. Mr Nayer, the Treasurer and Marketing Director of the Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association was charged with the following three offences under the Code for approaching Zimbabwe Captain Graeme Cremer: 1. Article 2.1.1 - being party to an effort to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspects of an International match or matches; 2. Article 2.1.3 - offering Mr. Cremer US $30,000 to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspects of an International match or matches; and 3. Article 2.1.4 - directly soliciting, inducing, enticing or encouraging Mr. Cremer to breach Article 2.1.1. Mr Nayer accepted the charge of 2.1.4 and, on this basis, the ICC has agreed not to pursue any of the alternative charges based on the same facts. The range of permissible sanctions for a breach of Article 2.1.4 is a period of ineligibility of a minimum of five years and a maximum of a lifetime. The suspension shall be backdated to the start of his provisional suspension on 16 January 2018 and as such he will be eligible to participate in cricket from 16 January 2038. Alex Marshall, General Manager – ICC ACU said: “I welcome the result of the

investigation and the substantial sanction imposed upon Mr. Nayer. It is important that the seriousness of his offences were reflected in the length of ban. “I would like to place on record my thanks to Graeme Cremer, who has acted with the utmost professionalism throughout this process. Immediately after he received the approach from Mr. Nayer he reported it to the ICC and we were able to get an investigation underway swiftly. Graeme has been involved and updated throughout the investigation and has played a critical role in ensuring that corruption has no place in our sport. “I would also like to extend my thanks to Zimbabwe Cricket with whom we have worked closely throughout the investigation.” Graeme Cremer said: “I was appalled to be approached by someone so closely connected to the game and there was no doubt in my mind that I had to report it as soon as I could. We receive education around this which you never expect to have to use, but it certainly helped when it came to knowing what to do. “I think it is important that corrupters receive strong sanctions as it sends out a message to others who might consider getting involved. For any cricketer who might find themselves in my position, my message is really simple – report it. The ICC will take any report seriously and will deal with you professionally and with respect. If we are to kick corruption out of the game, we must all play our part.”
