British men seriously injured in stabbing Two British men were left seriously injured after an attack in Torrevieja.

T

he two men were stabbed during a fight which happened early Thursday morning. The fight took place in the San Luis/El Chaparral urbanisation when the English confronted some individuals of Romanian nationality. The injured were taken to Torrevieja hospital for surgery. It is believed that the origin of the dispute began at 1am in a bar on calle Rodrigo. For reasons unknown, a fight started and punches were thrown. Later the Romanians are believed to have

returned to the area this time with knives. During the attack two British men were stabbed, one of around 60 years old was stabbed in the back and in the thorax and the other of around 30 years old received a stab wound in the left armpit near his heart. The wounds led to the loss of a great amount of blood as could be seen in the street where the stabbing took place. The incident was attended by the Local Police and the Guardia Civil as well as two SAMU units and an ambulance. The men were treated at the spot and then transferred to the hospital. News from the hospital confirmed that the men were operated on after being admitted into A & E. It is believed that they are now out of danger and are stable but

will remain in hospital due to the severity of their injuries. It is believed that one of the attackers lost his mobile during the incident and this has now been retrieved by the police who have been able to identify him. The man is now being sought by the Guardia Civil who are leading the investigation. Suzanne O’Connell

Earthquake in Torrevieja A small earthquake took place in the Laguna de La Mata early on Monday morning 3rd September at 3.38 am. The earthquake registered at 2.1 degrees on the Richter scale and its epicentre was in the north of Torrevieja. An electrical storm accompanied the earthquake but there appears to have been no structural damage of Continued on page 5

This is the third time that the local police force in Torrevieja has been investigated for the possibility of bullying at work . This time the court number 1 in Elche has criticised the previous adminis-tration at the town hall for its involvement. The bullying and harassment of a Local Police officer is thought to have been going on for years. Now, the victim has been awarded €95,816 in damages for psychological difficulties resulting from the continued behaviour of his colleagues. The court accused the town hall of not intervening in the bullying at any time during its jurisdiction. It is claimed that councillors were aware of the situation due to the number of denuncias that had been made about it. The police officer began working in 2010 and recognised that there were irregularities in the control of cash that was being collected from fines. He also realised that there were frequent inspections of some

leisure facilities whilst others remained unchecked even though there were bad reports about them. The police officer, along with two colleagues, reported the incidents and following this his persecution began. It included changing shifts without warning, being denied holidays, having to carry out numerous shifts without a break and word being spread to the traffic division that he should no longer drive. The officer was denied extra pay, received humiliating correspondence and was subjected to degrading situations. He was insulted on almost a daily basis and in front of everyone but no one did anything. The investigating magistrate said that those complicit with the crime, including councillors and inspectors, tried to justify their approach but statements were contradictory to the evidence given by others. The two police chiefs accused of this crime have already been convicted for workplace harassment twice before. In these cases compensation had to paid out of €48,500 and €23,450. Suzanne O’ConnelL

Town hall seeks solution over pay dispute Seven hundred town hall workers in Torrevieja are currently in dispute with the local town hall over payment of salaries for August. Protests began following the announcement that salaries were unable to be paid due to el departamento de Intervención blocking their release. The disagreement over the payment being made is due to administrative legalities. For decades payment has included an amount for productivity too as well as the base salary. This has now been ruled as irregular and has stopped payment of August wages going through. The productivity payment is a salary supplement of around €200 that is not apparently linked to any definable objective and the amount increases according to the official’s rank. The payment to the workers should have been made on August 30th and failure to do so has caused outrage. Mass demonstrations have beentaking place outside the town hall. Now the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, has announced that the payments can be made by separating them into two different payment streams. One would be the payment of the base salary and the other a payment linked to productivity. In this way, it is claimed, payment of the majority of the money owed should be guaranteed even if attempts are made to block it.

To explain the process, the mayor called in representatives of those protesting. Even though a possible solution has been put forward it could still fail to be passed on technicalities. The mayor currently ‘has his fingers crossed’ that at least the majority of the payment owed can be paid. If it is blocked again then he will have to appeal to the regional government of Valencia for help in finding a solution. In the meantime plans by the PP (conservative) political party to lead on a vote of no confidence in the ruling party has been thwarted by the two locally elected members of Ciudadanos. A spokeswoman from the group rejected the possibility of joining with the PP and instead stood behind the mayor’s attempts to reach a method of payment as quickly as possible. Instead of removing the local government Ciudadanos councillors prefer the negotiating table. ‘We want dialogue,’ explained Pilar Gómez Magán, ‘If we all agree then payment can be made for August. We also want to find a solution to this that is long term. The problem was one for the previous government too.’ Suzanne O’Connell

La Mata market on the move The 169 traders of La Mata’s weekly market have finally moved after months of deliberation. Their first day of trading in the new location took place on 5th September as they set up their stalls on the area of avenida de Francia and avenida Holandeses. The move was necessary due to the risk of subsidence with cars parking and travelling over a canal. The Councillor for markets, Javier Manzanares, announced that the move took place calmly and that, in his view, was a good option for the market. Suggestions are now being received for how the market area can be improved in future weeks. ‘The decision about where to relocate was never going to please everyone,’ explained the councillor. ‘But we’re going to work at it to ensure that it can be seen from the results that it was the right move to make.’

More police awards More local police officers and members of the Guardia Civil have been given recognition for acts of bravery. The awards were made in the town hall building in Torrevieja and were given for the rescue of three young men from the sea in the cove del Torrejón. Las Calas de Torrejón is to the north of Torrevieja. Officer Jorge Albadalejo received the Medalla al Mérito de la Protección Civil in the gold category for his ‘exceptional heroic conduct, putting his own life at risk to help the three young people in las Calas del Torrejón’. The Medalla al Mérito de la Protección Civil in the silver category was given to officer Justo Ros and local police officers Adolfo Rodríguez and Jerónimo Manzanaro for their participation in the same rescue and ‘putting their lives at great risk in a stormy sea.’ The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, presented the awards along with officials from both local police and the Guardia Civil.

Rescue drill Lifeguards and rescue services once more put their procedures into action during a routine drill this week. This time they were put through their paces rescuing a woman who had fallen from a cliff about six metres high in Gambote de Torrevieja, popularly known as Calas del Torrejón. Participating in the practice were lifeguards, the Local Police and members of the health service. The ‘victim’ remained unconscious throughout the intervention and lifeguards had to keep her alive until the arrival of the medics who had to place a collar on her. She was then moved to a spinal board attached to a jet ski and taken to Los Locos beach on a local police boat. From there she was taken to Torrevieja hospital. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, explained that the exercise was a success and was completed in record time. Continued on page 8

A truck driver was lucky to escape unhurt on Friday night as he survived his vehicle crashing through a barrier, falling over a bridge and finally bursting into flames. The fire service were called to a vehicle blaze off the A-7 motorway, between Alicante and Elche, at around 02:45 in the early hours of Saturday morning. The truck, which was carrying vegetables, left the A-7 motorway at the point where a bridge carries the motorway above another main road. The vehicle crashed through the barrier and ended up on the EL-20 road below, after falling several metres and then burst into flames. Miraculously, the driver managed to escape the wreck uninjured, despite the severity of the incident. The road was closed until around 06:30 whilst the wreck was cleared and the road was cleaned of the debris.

Tornadoes on the Costa Blanca Tornadoes out at sea across the Comunidad Valenciana on Friday sparked alarm and curiosity among bathers on beaches from along the coast. The freak weather systems were spotted in Alboraia (Valencia province), Jávea, Guardamar del Segura and even Torrevieja. Normally a prelude to the so-called gota fría, when warm and cold air collide and produce torrential rain, flash floods and high winds for several days on the Mediterranean, tornadoes out to sea are surprisingly common and do not cause damage or injury as they are too far from the land. That said, the tornado in Guardamar del Segura did touch terra firma, striking farm fields inland from the coast, and causing minor damage to greenhouses. Some of these dramatic wind-funnels reached up to 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) high, according to witnesses, meaning the top of the 'tubes' would have been level with planes flying overhead. The southern half of the province of Valencia and the provinces of Alicante, Murcia and Almería are currently on 'orange alert' for freak storms due to the presence of what is known as a 'DANA', or Depresión Aislada a Niveles Altas ('Isolated Depression at High Altitudes') which was forecast to sweep the east and south-east over the weekend and into this week. In fact at the time of going to press localised rain showers and thunder storms were being forecast from Monday through to Friday, with Wednesday predicted to be the worst day with 80 percent chance of storms.

RELIGION TEACHER GETS JOB BACK,17 YEARS AFTER LOSING IT Seventeen years after losing her job , a Spanish religion teacher named Resurrección Galera is back at her desk. Snra Galera was dismissed in 2001 after the Catholic Church refused to renew her contract because she had married a divorced man. Galera took up her new post at a public school in Llanos de la Cañada, in Almería province, two years after the Supreme Court ruled that she had to be reinstated. In its decision, the court said that her dismissal “violated fundamental rights.” Judges found that her marriage bore no relation to her work as a religion teacher, and that she could not be fired for having failed to follow the precepts of the Roman Catholic Church, which has control over the hiring of religion teachers in state schools. At the time of her dismissal, Galera had been teaching Catholic religion for

seven years at Ferrer Guardia Elementary School, earning a monthly salary of around €1,400 from the Education Ministry. In 2001 the Diocese of Almería decided not to renew her contract after finding out that Galera had married a German divorcé, Johannes Romes, in a civil ceremony. Despite the legal rulings in her favour, it was not until July of this year that the ministry announced that Galera would be readmitted at her old school. In its 2016 decision, the Supreme Court ordered the Education Ministry, the Andalusian education department and the Diocese of Almería to reinstate the teacher and pay her back wages. The Diocese of Almería had appealed twice before the Constitutional Court in its bid to prevent Galera’s return, but on Monday it said in a release that it respects the courts’ decisions.

Torrevieja’s Comarcon announced On Saturday 15th and 16th September ComarCON18 will take place in the Palacio de los Deportes in Torrevieja. This is an alternative leisure exhibition that is organised by the department of youth in the town hall. The councillor for youth, Victor Ferrández, presented the event at a press conference and this will be the sixth event of this kind in the town. Entrance is free and there will be more than 150 different activities available, including more than 120 table top games. A new feature of the event this year is that you can camp overnight from Saturday to Sunday if you wish. Saturday’s opening hours are from 10am until 9pm and on Sunday from 10am until 8pm. The stalls and activities will be set up both inside the building and in the car park. Last year 6,000 people attended and it is expected that this figure could reach 8,000 at this year’s event. In

previous years it’s been an attraction for people all over the country as they come together to play games, share and exchange comics and indulge in their passion for alternative games and pastimes. During the two days there will be workshops and presentations linked to comic books and current and retro video games. Video games include Dragon Ball, Clash Royale and Mario Kart. You can listen to talks, take part in workshops, competitions and sports; participate in wargames and role play throughout the day. Bid to oust government continues Following Ciudadanos’ (Cs) original declaration that they would not get involved in the PP’s plans to remove the government, they are now suggesting that they are prepared to negotiate. With less than a year to go to the next local elections the right wing group, Ciudadanos, consisting of two councillors, could make all the difference to the PP’s attempt to grab back the power they had until the 2016 elections. The two Cs councillors have now agreed that they might be prepared to discuss supporting a vote of no confidence in the current administration. If they did decide to back them, the Cs would not follow this up by taking seats in a newly formed council. Instead Paqui Parra and Pilar Gómez Magán will continue in opposition. Currently the PP has 11 councillors and needs another two councillors on their side if they want to knock the four party council out of position.

This support could come either from Ciudadanos or the Sueña party which also has two councillors. The support of the Cs would come with conditions. They have prepared a long wish list that they would want put into practice if their support was to be counted on. This includes lowering council tax, opening the theatre, constructing offices for AGAMED, opening the disabled centre, finding a solution to the occupation of the indoor market upper floors and opening the Semana Santa Museum amongst others. However, the fact remains that over the period of its administration the local council has already been battling to address some of these issues and finding a solution may be outside the capability of any local party. Torrevieja to improve traffic lights The town hall of Torrevieja is to invest €600,000 in the modernisation and maintenance of its traffic light system. Councillor Fanny Serrano announced the programme which includes a four-year contract with the possibility of an additional year of more than €103,517 euros a year.

Six arrested for selling false goods Six people have been arrested with more than 1,300 false goods valued at €70,000. The goods seized include hundreds of clothes and accessories, CDs and DVDs. The undercover operation began in the weekly La Mata market and consisted of around thirty police officers. The officers in plain clothes mixed in with other customers and took note of where the illegal sellers were spreading out their goods. Once the officers had checked who was actually selling the items then they summoned uniformed police officers who were strategically positioned around the area and ready to swoop. The officers were then able to detain six of those identified by their under cover colleagues. Those arrested were all of Senegalese origin and aged between 31 and 52 years old. They were brought before the courts and have been let out on bail. Suzanne O’Connell

in Orihuela Costa The opposition party Compromís Orihuela recently held a meeting on the coast to address various neighbourhood complaints and requests regarding deficiencies in public roads and street furniture. During this meeting various issues were addressed such as the lack of urban cleanliness and the poor state or lack of ‘street furniture’ such as streetlighting, traffic signs, litter bins or recycling banks.

between urbanizations that pose a danger for the pedestrian and the urban furniture is nonexistent". For this reason Compromis believes it is necessary "to design a plan for the Orihuela coast with concrete measures for different areas that help create safe spaces and coexistence for the pedestrian and the road user and review the existing elements of street furniture."

Costal concerns

The pavements are also a concern with many being uneven, unsafe or have obstructions. "One of the complaints of the residents of Orihuela Costa is the lack of street furniture and the poor condition of the ones that already exists. These are elderly people who are looking for a bench to sit on when they get tired, but they cannot find one, "said Secretary of Compromís Orihuela and resident of the coast, Martin Borislavov. He continued, explaining that "on the Oriolan coast there are different areas of pedestrian traffic

“On the coast we do not have benches or seats in all the bus stops, and we believe necessary to act in a practical way at least in the zones of transit for usual pedestrian,” Borislavov added. With these issues in mind Compromis, the ecosocialists, are asking both the Popular Party and Citizens to take these concerns into account, adding finally that "to continue to allow building in Orihuela Costa without creating spaces of coexistence and without improving services is synonymous with mismanagement, and this is what the Orihuela government is allowing.”

Granada village teaches dogs not to fear fireworks A dog-training course to teach pets not to be scared of fireworks is being offered free of charge to all owners, says the local council in Granada organising these pioneering workshops. The town of Vegas del Genil, has teamed up with the DeSilva dog obedience school and the Animal and Plant Protection Society, a pet shelter in the Alhambra city, to offer a series of courses to any owners resident in the village who have trouble calming their four-legged friends during fiestas. Pets living in villages and small towns will inevitably suffer several times a year for days or weeks at a time whenever fiestas are held if the noise produced by fireworks upsets them, and many animal-lovers across Spain have urged town halls to let up on the bangers and rockets because it is distressing for dogs, cats and, especially,

smaller animals such as rabbits, ferrets and guinea pigs. But as a big part of festival culture, fireworks cannot be avoided together – except by living out of town – so Vegas del Genil's public safety councillor Alejandro Martín has announced a ground-breaking solution. He said the course is in response to popular demand – especially from residents who were delighted with the results of the free council-run course on teaching dogs not to bark indiscriminately – and, although places are limited, it is likely the local authority will fund future ones to cater for anyone who ends up on a waiting list. These workshops, when successful, improve life for dogs, and also for residents – owners or non-owners – since 'welltrained dogs always make for a better collective life for people, too', Martín argues.

Symphony orchestra programme 2018-2019

Come and join in with the Pistoleros

Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra (OST) presented their annual programme for the year 2018-19 to the press. This year will be the 10th anniversary of the orchestra and will include six concerts with European artists and four concerts of Chamber Music. A book has also been produced that summarises the history of the past decade for the orchestra and will be presented on the 24th October to the public. The classic performances will begin with the music of Tchaikovsky and Dvorak on 27th October. On 2nd December there will be a soloist flute performance by Jordi López who will play an interpretation of Mozart and Schubert. There will be two concerts to celebrate the new year and the Christmas Kings on 5th and 6th January. This will include waltzes, polkas and Spanish music. On 2nd March a concert will be held in honour of the Nordic audience with the music of Grieg. In the spring, the OST has prepared a concert of popular movie sound tracks such as Out of Africa, Jurassic Park, Gladiator and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The spring programme will conclude with Spanish music on 11th May. Director, José Francisco Sánchez, took time to thank the board of directors who have helped the orchestra to grow from a chamber group to the orchestra it is now. ‘I always had the goal of filling the International Auditorium,’ he explained.

On Saturday 29th September between 2pm and 6pm the Pistoleros will be reenacting scenes from thewild west in Carmen’s Bar and Restaurant in El Chaparral. You are invited to witness a shootout by this well-known westerner club who raise money for local charities whilst entertaining audiences. This won’t be the only attraction that you can enjoy on the day. There will also be country music and dancing and a hog roastthat you can sharefor as little as €3. A raffle has been organised with many of the prizes having been donated by an anonymous donor ‘Boris’. It’s all in aid of a good cause. The San José Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela is in desperate need of basic items for the children in their care. The orphanage is home to 70 children from the ages of seven to 18 and provides both a home and an education. The money raised will go towards equipping them with school essentials, clothing and other basics that most of us take for granted. The Pistoleros programme begins at 2pm with music and is followed by a shootout. The Pistoleros take their reenactments seriously and try to be as authentic as possible. After more music the programme continues with the reenactment ‘Shootout at the Tombstone Jail’ at 3pm and this is followed by more music. At 5pm the show continues with ‘The Trilogy’ and there’s a last opportunity to enjoy a dance at 5.30pm before the show closes at 6pm. Suzanne O’Connell

‘That dream has been fulfilled with more than 20 concerts being held this year.’ The OST’s performances at the International Auditorium have proved to be particularly popular with residents from many different countries

including Germany, Belgium, Norway and Sweden as well as amongst those resident torrevejenses who are now taking up the opportunity to make the most of the auditorium on the hill. Along with the OST programme there

will also be four concerts of Chamber Music that will be held in the Auditorium chamber room. This room has 420 seats altogether. The cost of this is reasonable at only eight euros entry for the general public and seven euros for those who are members. The violinist, Stanislav Tkach outlined the dates for the four Chamber Music concerts and said that throughout his travels to 22 different countries he had never met such a welcoming audience. The performances will begin on 15th September at 8pm and the first one will include a selection of Beethoven and Shostakovich. The second concert includes compositions by Mozart and will take place on 26th January. The third is scheduled for 20th April and will celebrate Holy Week with the music of Handel, Vivaldi and Bach. The last concert will be on 8th June and will include interpretations of Mozart and Haydn. The president also pointed out that this year there will be a bus service up to the auditorium with pick up from the Eras de la Sal, the Hotel Fontana and the BP petrol station in town. A service that’s believed to be particularly useful for pensioners and those who live further away.Anyone wishing to buy tickets for the concerts can do so between 10am and 1pm and from 5pm and 7pm at calle Vicente Blasco Ibáñez number 23. Visit the Age Concern charity shop Mention Age Concern and most people are likely to think of their centre in Calle Paganina (La Siesta). However, to enable the services that they offer to function, they need money. Their charity shops are an important source of finance and need your help. Their charity shop in Calle Patricio Zammit 41, Torrevieja has been operating for many years now. Wilma is the manager of the shop and has been for the last 20 years. Wilma’s reputation for customer care

and attention to detail has spread and the shop is a central point for visitors from many different countries across the world. As a result, there is often an interesting mixture of clothes that reflect their international origins. If you would like to visit the shop, either to bring in your own donations or to browse and buy, it’s open from Monday to Friday 10am until 2pm. On Thursday there is an additional opening time of 5pm until 7pm. As well as visiting as a customer, Age Concern is hoping to

attract some volunteers. They need people to staff the shop and a number of different days and times are available for anyone with time to spare. Volunteers of any age, male or female and any nationality are welcome. One preference, however, is that you do speak some English. If you would like to apply you can visit the shop and meet Wilma and the team or telephone the Age Concern Centre on 966 786 887. Suzanne O’Connell

Andalusia calls for deal to send back migrant minors The Andalusian government wants Madrid and Rabat to negotiate the return of underage migrants to Morocco. The move comes as the southern Spanish region struggles to cope with growing immigration flows that have led to overcrowded centres. At a meeting scheduled between regional and central government leaders, Andalusian representatives will insist on the need to redistribute the more than 2,500 migrant minors currently in their care by sending some of them to centres in other parts of Spain. But regional authorities also want the administration of Socialist Party (PSOE) Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to work on the diplomatic front, to open up the possibility of sending some of these underage migrants back to Morocco.

The last word on returns lies with the prosecutors in charge of each case, but one prosecutor who works with underage migrants on a daily basis said that “if Moroccan authorities can guarantee that the children will go back to a safe environment and conditions, the prosecution would not hinder their return.” Andalusian officials want to reactivate a 2007 bilateral agreement between Spain and Morocco, by virtue of which Rabat pledged to help identify migrant minors and their families. The agreement went into effect in October 2012 but it was never effectively implemented.

Echoes of the past In 2006, an influx of migrant boats dubbed “cayucos” resulted in 30,000 new

arrivals in the Canary Islands. Of these, 700 were unaccompanied minors. Unable to cope, the Canaries’ government pressured the central administration for a more equal distribution among Spain’s regions. Nearly 500 underage migrants were flown to the peninsula, and several regions took in the newcomers after receiving state funding for each one of them. Of the more than 7,000 minors currently in the care of Spain’s regional governments, nearly 70% are Moroccan nationals. Existing laws already include a protocol for their repatriation, but in practice it is not being implemented due to lack of cooperation from Morocco and other countries of origin.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Despite some major stats on the UK economic picture being released this week, it was once again Brexit that caused the most movement in the pound. The UK’s economic growth held steady at 0.4% and indicated the possibility of a faster pace of growth towards the end of the year. However, a breakdown of the stats showed that the picture isn’t rosy everywhere. Activity in the UK's services sector rose in August to 54.3 from 53.5 according to survey by HIS Markit and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply but this was the one spot of good news, albeit significant given the prominence of the service sector in the UK economy. Growth in the UK construction sector slowed to 52.9 in August while manufacturing eased to 52.8. None of this had little impact on the pound, which remains more vulnerable to the slings and arrows of Brexit negotiations. Michel Barnier proposed a backstop that would mean NI staying in the EU customs unions, large parts of the single market and the EU VAT system but this was rejected by the UK government. In news that was more positive for the pound, Germany are said to be ready to accept a less detailed

agreement on the UK’s future economic and trade ties with the EU in a bid to get a Brexit deal done. The only other element influencing the pound this week was the variety of news from the Bank of England, sending the pound both up and down as sentiment dictated. Inflation reports from the BoE shook GBP markets, but Mark Carney’s hints that he may extend his tenure to provide some continuity throughout Brexit were taken as a positive. It was mostly quiet on the euro front, but the currency was slightly weighed down by indications that Euro zone economic growth will be modest at best over the coming year, according to a Reuters poll of economists who unanimously said the trade war between the United States and China threatens the outlook. The forecast looks steady at 0.4% every quarter through to the end of 2019 according to the poll, but there are some suggestions that growth is losing momentum and could be further impacted if a trade war between the United States and China escalates further, hurting business and consumer sentiment and keeping financial markets on edge.

RETIREMENT REVIEW

How we can help you?

I

t really is vitally important to plan for your retirement to enable you to live the lifestyle you want. We help clients organise their financial affairs for the future and support them along the way.

What is a retirement review? A retirement review will involve a meeting to explore your financial planning, where we can assess your needs and objectives along with reviewing the policies you already have in place. If you have a UK private pension, you may choose to consider the benefits of transferring to a more suitable plan.

So, what are my options? Most people automatically think of QROPS when considering a pension transfer, but this might not be the best solution. Depending on your circumstances and retirement goals a SIPP may be more suitable.

What is a SIPP? A Self‐Invested Personal Pension is effectively a straightforward UK‐ based private pension plan that allows you, with the help of a financial adviser to invest in a wide range of products to build a pension that suits your attitude to risk and long term financial goals. A SIPP is simply a pension “wrapper”, your financial adviser acts as the SIPP administrator to ensure the pension structure you require is in place, and that your plan adheres to all of the UK’s rules and regulations. A SIPP is fully UK friendly, and will continue to function for you whether you are a UK resident or living overseas.

What do we mean by a pension wrapper? A wrapper is simply the name given to tax friendly investment products. Within your “pension wrapper” you can invest in a wide range of opportunities and design your plan to best suit you through your retirement.

The next step It is never too late to take stock of your pension and make sure you can live the lifestyle you want to live in the future. Call me, Chris Shaw on 965 704 338 or email: Chris.Shaw@Seagatewealth.es to arrange a free no‐obligation Retirement Review.

They are very beautiful to look at and have become a popular feature in private gardens as well as those of hotels and large estates around the world. Their fronds stretch out similar to those of a palm and unusually are dioecious meaning that there are male and female plants that produce separate cones and therefore need to be pollinated to reproduce, as with the majority of other plants. Some of them can remain small and compact whilst others can grow into huge palm like plants and look wonderful in all kinds of environments. The most common Cycad that is used in ornamental growth is the Cycads revoluta (sago palm) which originates from Japan and the Orient, producing either a single trunk or multi stems with dark green foliage. In Japan they have a plant that is over one thousand years old! The male plant is long and slender whilst the female plant is broader and wider and it is possible to see the seeds developing inside it. They can often be mistaken for either palms or tree ferns due to their appearance; therefore they can be a good substitute as they have a good crown without the height of the trunk. All cycads are hardy and can

www.costablancapeople.com

adapt to a range of different soil, but it is essential to have good drainage as being to wet in their roots will destroy them. Whilst they are in their growing season it is important to water them every day-

morning and eveningespecially if they are potted. Be careful though, as some species can have a dormant period, so will require less water, so the colder it is the less water they need. Cycads can suffer from chewing insects and scale, so make sure that the soil is well drained, as mentioned before and that they get regular long watering in their first 3-4 years. They also need to have a good, organic fertiliser. The use of white

oil which consists of a cup of cooking oil, half a cup of water plus a small amount of ordinary washing up liquid-diluting it with water so that it is 40 parts water to one part of the mixture then stir it up and spray it! You can propagate Cycads by either seeds or offsets. The best method is by their seeds as many species to not have offsets that occur regularly. If you do have offsets, however, you need to remove them from the main plant with a clean sharp knife or tool of the like leaving as little a wound as possible. Then you should treat the wound with a fungicide that has sulphur in it. As there are so many cycads to choose from they are ideal to include in new sustainable landscapes. As you can predict their size and appearance the garden can be planned accordingly. They can take their time to grow, but if you want to hasten the process the best means is by adding fertilizer and water on a regular basis. Cycads can also be transplanted easily, so for example if they are in pots and you are moving to a new home, they should survive the whole process without too much stress on them. Marc Vijverberg

Visit MARRAKESH with Vivalia Travel Marrakesh comprises an old fortified city packed with vendors and their stalls bordered by modern neighbourhoods

Marrakesh, also known by the French spelling Marrakech, is a major city of the Kingdom of Morocco. It is the fourth largest city in the country, after Casablanca, Fez and Tangier. It is located to the north of the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains Today it is one of the busiest cities in Africa and serves as a major economic centre and tourist destination. Tourism is strongly advocated by the reigning Moroccan monarch, Mohammed VI, with the goal of doubling the number of tourists visiting Morocco to 20 million by 2020. Climate A hot semi-arid climate predominates at Marrakesh. Average temperatures range from 12 °C in the winter to 26–30 °C in the summer. The relatively wet winter and dry summer precipitation pattern of Marrakesh mirrors precipitation patterns found in Mediterranean climates. However, the city receives less rain than is typically found in a Mediterranean climate, resulting in a semiarid climate classification Economy Marrakesh is a vital component to the economy and culture of Morocco. Improvements to the highways from Marrakesh to Casablanca, Agadir and the local airport have led to a dramatic increase in tourism in the city, which now attracts over two million tourists annually. Because of the importance of tourism to Morocco's economy, King Mohammed VI has vowed to attract 20 million tourists a year to Morocco by 2020, doubling the number of tourists from 2012. Trade and crafts are extremely important to the local tourism-fueled economy. Landmarks Jemaa el-Fnaa: The Jemaa el-Fnaa is one of the best-known squares in Africa and is the centre of city activity and trade. It has been described as a "world-famous square", "a metaphorical urban icon, a bridge between the past and the present, the place where Moroccan tradition encounters modernity." Today the square attracts people from a diversity of social and ethnic backgrounds and tourists from all around the world. Snake charmers, acrobats, magicians, mystics, musicians, monkey trainers, herb sellers, story-tellers, dentists, pickpockets, and entertainers in medieval garb still populate the square. Souks: Marrakesh has the largest traditional Berber market in Morocco and the image of the city is closely associated with its souks. Paul Sullivan cites the souks as the principal shopping attraction in the city: "A honeycomb of intricately connected alleyways, this fundamental section of the old city is a micro-medina in itself,

comprising a dizzying number of stalls and shops that range from itsy kiosks no bigger than an elf's wardrobe to scruffy storefronts that morph into glittering Aladdin's Caves once you're inside." Historically the souks of Marrakesh were divided into retail areas for particular goods such as leather, carpets, metalwork and pottery. These divisions still roughly exist but with significant overlap. Many of the souks sell items like carpets and rugs, traditional Muslim attire, leather bags, and lanterns. Haggling is still a very important part of trade in the souks. City walls and gates: The ramparts of Marrakesh, which stretch for some 19 kilometres around the medina of the city, were built by the Almoravids in the 12th century as protective fortifications. The walls are made of a distinct orange-red clay and chalk, giving the city its nickname as the "red city"; they stand up to 19 feet high and have 20 gates and 200 towers along them. Bab Agnaou was built in the 12th century during the Almohad dynasty. The Berber name Agnaou, like Gnaoua, refers to people of Sub-Saharan African origin .This ornamentation is framed by three panels marked with an inscription from the Quran in Maghrebi script using foliated Kufic letters, which were also used in Al-Andalus. Bab Agnaou was renovated and its opening reduced in size during the rule of sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah. Bab Aghmat is located east of the Jewish and Muslim cemeteries, and is near the tomb of Ali ibn Yusuf.

Palaces and Riads: The historic wealth of the city is manifested in palaces, mansions and other lavish residences. The main palaces are El Badi Palace, the Royal Palace and Bahia Palace. Riads (Moroccan mansions) are common in Marrakesh. Based on the design of the Roman villa, they are characterized by an open central garden courtyard surrounded by high walls. This construction provided the occupants with privacy and lowered the temperature within the building.

Make sure your tax affairs are in order by 30 September says HMRC

HMRC delivered two talks in the Alicante province this week. During their talks they reminded British Nationals, who live in Spain but have assets in the UK, or who are UK tax residents, that they should make sure they have declared all their overseas taxable income to HMRC. Those who don’t could face tougher penalties in the future. The two events, held in Rojales and Teulada/Moraira, were well attended by UK citizens keen to know the latest legislation which may affect them. Attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions. The representatives from HMRC gave an overview of what kind of assets may need to be declared, such as income from renting a property out in the UK or UK government pensions received abroad, and explained how to start the declaration

process. During the question and answer session at the end, HMRC also took the time to listen to UK nationals’ concerns around filling in tax returns whilst overseas and clarifying points around the Spain/UK double taxation agreement, which they committed to feeding back in the UK. British Consul, Sarah-Jane Morris, who attended both events said: “I’m really pleased that HMRC has come to this area, where so many British Nationals live. The talks were very informative and I hope those who attended will help spread the word that it is important to ensure your tax affairs are in order. More information can be found on the gov.uk website which I urge British nationals resident in Spain to check”. As part of the British Government’s “Requirement to Correct” legislation, UK taxpayers must make sure that all their foreign income and assets, where they might be tax to pay, have been declared to HMRC before 30

September 2018. From 1 October 2018, new, substantially higher penalties will apply for those who have failed to pay all the tax due on foreign income and assets. The vast majority of people and businesses pay the right amount of tax. The new legislation is aimed at those who fail to pay tax on their offshore income or assets. If you are concerned that you haven’t told HMRC about foreign income or assets, or that you have transferred income abroad without paying UK tax on it, you should notify HMRC before 30 September 2018. You could also consider taking independent professional advice before deciding what to do next. Anyone who would like more information on the new “requirement to correct” UK law, can look online on the gov uk at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/re quirement-to-correct-tax-dueon-offshore-assets To start the process of declaring overseas assets please visit: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/w orldwide-disclosure-facilitymake-a-disclosure

Why don’t they include me?

What does she look like?

I consider myself a congenial person. I am single, and I know lots of people. However, I read on peoples Facebook pages, that a lot of socialising goes on within these groups, and no one ever seems to think to invite me along. I am retired early and I don’t have a lot of money, and perhaps they don’t include me for that reason.

My once beautiful 18 year old daughter always said she wants to look like the girls with big lips, large boobs and a big bottom. She told me she was going on holiday, but was really having these procedures done without me knowing. She used her late grandmother's inheritance money. It doesn't matter to her that her grandmother wanted her to use the money for a deposit on a house. I am very upset, I think the look is hideous, I don't recognise her any more, and she is attracting the wrong kind of attention. Awful men who treat her like trash.

I wouldn’t take it personally. May be these people think you’ve got other friends, and are busy yourself. If I were you, I would take action and invite them round for a drink. Socialising needn’t cost a lot of money. Just an inexpensive bottle of wine and a few nibbles one afternoon, sitting in the sun. I am sure you will find that once the invitation has been extended, you will likely start to be invited out yourself. Friendship is a two way street.

I too hope this trend will soon run its course. Wanting to change your look to any large extent can possibly point towards feelings of inadequacy, and if there is a problem, I would suggest delving deeper in to why your daughter feels the need to look and dress this way. Unfortunately, modern society plays a big part in girls feeling the pressure to conform, so you might not be able to change things. Let's hope as she gets older, she changes her mind.

Spain to halt sale of bombs to Saudi Arabia Spain has announced that it has cancelled a 2015 deal to sell 400 laserguided bombs to Saudi Arabia, which is leading a coalition fighting rebels in Yemen. A defence ministry spokesman confirmed a Cadena Ser radio report that said Spain’s new Socialist government planned to return the 9.2 million euros already paid by the Saudis for the arms under a deal signed by the

previous conservative administration. The spokesman declined to elaborate but the announcement comes after an August air strike by the Saudi-led coalition battling rebels in Yemen that killed dozens of civilians, including 40 children. The incident sparked a wave of international anger and calls by the United Nations Security Council for a “credible and transparent”

investigation. The coalition had claimed to have targeted a bus carrying rebels. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other allies intervened in Yemen in March 2015 after Shiite Huthi rebels linked to Iran ousted President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi’s government from the capital Sanaa and seized swathes of the country. Nearly 10,000 people have been killed in the conflict since then, 2,200 of

them children, and sparked what the UN has described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Amnesty International says Spain is one of biggest arms exporters to Saudi Arabia. It and other rights groups, including Greenpeace and Oxfam, on Tuesday urged Spain to stop all arm sales to Saudi Arabia during a meeting with Spain’s secretary of state for trade, Xiana Mendez. The government did not make any commitment to limit other arms sales to

Saudi Arabia during the meeting, Oxfam spokeswoman Lara Contreras told Spanish news agency AFP. While the 400 bombs which Spain will no longer send to Riyadh represent just “one percent of total arms sales to Saudi Arabia, it sends a clear message that it is important” to the Spanish government, she added. Spain signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia in April to sell the Gulf Arab state five warships in a deal estimated to be worth around 1.8 billion euros.

Why do banks value homes low? Rebecca Serwotka

avigating your way around the local property market seems like a piece of cake, and that anyone could do it. What happens behind the scenes though? Sometimes things can be a little stressful, to say the least. I want to share a short story with you this week. This really does happen in local Real Estate, so we can call this a true story. Like any market around the world, there are property highs and lows and valuing the home is more than asking what the homeowner would like to achieve. Anyone in their right mind would want top Euro, right? But it is my job to make sure the property is priced exactly where it should be within the current market. You can ask whatever price you want for your own home, and if you are lucky enough to sell to a cash purchaser, then the real value of the property doesn’t really come into the equation. However, what happens when you sell to someone that needs a mortgage? The bank will send out their independent valuer to make sure the property values up to the figure the buyers have agreed, therefore allowing the bank to lend a percentage of that amount, using the property as collateral. Straightforward, right? Well, yes as long as the bank valuer knows the local property market.

So this is my story: There was a home we had sold and the buyers needed a mortgage. No problem, we had done this thousands of times before. The property was a great buy and I was extremely confident there would be no issues with the valuation. The bank sent out their independent valuer. All good? No! The bank had actually valued the property far lower than the average similar home on the market. How could this possibly happen? I had done my research. Used my experience and expertise to market the property for the correct price. This wasn’t the biggest problem though. The bigger problem was that the sale was completing in just two weeks time, and the mortgage was still not approved! After having many, many conversations with the bank proving their valuer was incorrect with his pricing, they finally agreed to send out another valuer. Days passed. Still no news. Eventually came that phone call. “Rebecca, you were right!” said the Bank Manager “The second valuation came in 40% above market value!” laughed the Bank Manager in amazement. Even he was shocked at the price difference. The moral of this story is, by using a reputable Real Estate Agent, providing they have priced the home correctly, will be able to prove to the bank when mistakes are made. know who her real mother was. Activists say around 2,000 similar cases dating back to General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship of 1939 to 1975 have failed to make it to court in Spain because of a lack of evidence or because the time limit to file charges has passed. In a dark and often overlooked chapter of the right-wing dictatorship, the newborns of some left-wing opponents of the regime, as well as of unmarried or poor couples, were removed from their mothers and adopted. New mothers were frequently told their babies had died suddenly within hours of birth and the hospital had taken care of their burials, but in fact they were given or sold to another family. Baby stealing began after Franco came to power following the 1936-39 civil war pitting left-wing Republicans against conservative Nationalists loyal to the general. It was part of an effort to purge Spain of Marxist influence. It was expanded to take newborns

from poor families as well as illegitimate babies, and went on as an illegal trafficking network during democracy until at least 1987 when a new law was introduced to better regulate adoption. Enrique Vila, a lawyer who has written extensively about the “stolen babies” scandal, said Vela’s trial could provide “moral” encouragement for other victims to bring forward lawsuits. “There are dozens of doctors and nuns across Spain who are guilty” and who are still alive, he told Spanish news agency AFP. During questioning in the opening session of the trial on 26th June, Vela said he could not remember details of how the clinic, which he ran for 20 years up to 1982 and is believed to have been a centre for baby trafficking, operated. He added that the signature on Madrigal’s birth certificate was not his.

Stolen babies case continues Spain’s first trial linked to thousands of suspected cases of babies stolen from their mothers during the Franco dictatorship wrapped up last week with prosecutors seeking 11 years jail for the elderly former gynaecologist in the dock. Eduardo Vela, 85, a former gynaecologist at the now-defunct San Ramon clinic in Madrid, is accused of having in 1969 taken Ines Madrigal, now aged 49, from her biological mother and given her to another woman who then raised her and was falsely certified as her birth mother. “In this country, a person who played God — changing people’s parentage, faking birth certificates like in my case and negating the right to know one’s origins — cannot remain unpunished,” Madrigal told reporters at the end of the hearing in Madrid. She said she hoped the trial, whose verdict could come within a month, would help open “thousands of cases that are closed” even if she would never

belonged” that consisted in taking babies from single mothers who were in shelters that were often run by religious orders.

Confession

Vela — the first person prosecuted over the “stolen babies” scandal which broke in the media in the 1980s — was due to return to the witness stand the following day but instead he went to hospital after falling ill. He is accused of falsifying official documents, illegal adoption, unlawful detention and certifying a nonexistent birth. The probe into the case was not without its difficulties, with a policeman declaring in court that Vela burnt his clinic’s archives. But the agent insisted that “there was a plot to which Mr. Vela probably

Emilie Helmbacher, a French journalist, also testified by videoconference. In an investigation in Madrid in December 2013, she used a hidden camera to record Vela as he appeared to confess to having given Madrigal away as a “gift” in June 1969. In the recording, he said “Ines Madrigal’s mother did not pay” for her. Vela’s lawyer Rafael Casas criticised the hidden camera recording and said his client had “nothing to do” with what he is accused of. Another witness, Paz Gordon, who stepped in as godmother for Madrigal’s baptism, told the court that the actual mediator in her case was a Jesuit priest. The cases echo events that took place during Argentina’s 1976-1983 military dictatorship. Courts there have since handed down lengthy jail terms for the systematic theft of babies from political prisoners.

Unemployment up in Spain as economy sheds 203,000 jobs in August August is traditionally a slow month for the Spanish labor market, as many summer jobs get axed in the hospitality and retail sectors. But this year has been worse than others, newly released figures show. Unemployment rose by 47,047 people from July, the biggest rise on record for a month of August since 2011. The official number of people without a job is now 3.18 million: 1.3 million men and 1.87 million women. Job creation also experienced its worst month of August since 2008, with average Social Security affiliations reaching 18,839,814 after 202,996 jobs were cut. In August, affiliations grew in health and hospitality, but fell in education, manufacturing and construction. Among the self-employed, there was a 0.55 percent drop in affiliations, down

to 3,249,275. Broken down by regions, Social Security affiliations grew in the Canary Islands, Asturias, Cantabria and in the North African cities of Ceuta and Melilla, located along the northern coast of Africa. The biggest drops were in Catalonia, Madrid, the Valencia region and Andalusia. There were 1.6 million new job contracts signed in August, a 4.3 percent rise from the same month last year. But of these, only 153,921 were permanent contracts, representing 9.61 percent of the total. Although this is less than one out of 10, it is still a 33.4 percent rise from the same period last year. Of the permanent contracts signed last month, 92,963 were for fulltime positions and 60,958 for part-time jobs. There were 1,448,574 fixed-term contracts signed.

They are said to be three men and two women. All passengers were aged between 40 and early 60s, according to ALSA’s ticket records. The coach had passed its most recent

High-ranking politicians have sent their condolences to the bereaved and the wounded, and the Asturias regional government set up a crisis room and freephone helpline at around 4pm.

FIVE KILLED IN DRAMATIC COACH CRASH At least five people have died and 15 left seriously injured after a coach crashed into a viaduct in what has been described as one of the worst road traffic accidents this century. The ALSA coach was covering the route from Cudillero to Gijón via Avilés, where the tragedy happened, across the northern region of Asturias. Given how the vehicle appeared to drift to one side and then another before veering straight into the bridge without braking, it is thought the driver may have fainted or become otherwise unwell at the wheel. ALSA said he had been with the company for over seven years in the same role and had passed his most recent medical test. He is currently in a critical condition in Asturias Central University Hospital (HUCA) in Oviedo and has reportedly lost a limb. The crash, at 1.40pm on the AI-81, happened in a speed-restricted zone due to roadworks, and the coach was reportedly travelling at between 80 and

A British MP has stepped into a drug case after an British businessman was imprisoned two months ago for 1.5 tonnes of hashish found in airbnb he was renting. Chichester MP Gillian Keegan has been in touch over the arrest of Robert Anthony Mansfield-Hewitt, who has yet to be charged since being arrested over drug-dealing claims in June. Mr Mansfield-Hewitt is seriously ill and has been locked up with terrorists for more than two months in Spain. The consultant engineer, who insists he is innocent, has yet to be charged over the 1.5 tonnes of hashish police found in the garage of the villa, he rented through Airbnb. He insists he has absolutely no connection to the drugs that were being stored at the lodging in Campamento, in San Roque. On the other hand, according to reports in local newspapers, the owner

of the villa was charged for importing cocaine into Gibraltar last year. Mr Mansfield-Hewitt’s local MP is said to be very concerned about the situation and was speaking to his sec-retary in Gibraltar, where his company has a base. In a case that also has strange parallels to the plight of Scottish student Robbie McMiller who was arrested in October last year after six marijuana plants were found in his rental property, Mansfield-Hewitt was woken up and dragged out of bed practically naked at gunpoint by police officers at 8.30pm on 27th June. Colleagues and friends believe that Mansfield-Hewitt, who has a PhD and no criminal record, is an innocent man and has been wrongfully imprisoned.

They added that the Chichester-based engineer is currently in a critical condition and is being held in the medical wing at Botafuegos prison in Algeciras – a dangerous jail, which notoriously houses a number of Basque ETA terrorists. Robert’s PA Pilar Ford told local newspapers that she had not had any contact with Robert since18th August. “We have not had any telephone calls – it’s very worrying,” she said, “Usually he calls two to three times a week.” Robert’s lawyer, Jose Maria Castro Escudero, said that a judge was due to visit the prisoner and make a decision on whether to grant bail or not but there has been no further developments. “He is desperate,” added Castro Escudero.

SPAIN’S PM IN FAVOUR OF A VOTE IN CATALONIA - BUT NOT ON INDEPENDENCE The solution to the problem of the ongoing independence drive in Catalonia lies with a vote. That’s an idea that a significant part of the north-eastern Spanish region’s inhabitants have long been calling for, and that the current Socialist Party (PSOE) Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has now accepted as a possibility - in stark contrast to the hardline position taken by his conservative Popular Party (PP) predecessor, Mariano Rajoy. But there is an important nuance to Sánchez’s stance: there will not be a vote on self-determination, something that would be impossible according to the Spanish Constitution in its present form. Rather, he would like to see a vote on a new regional statute - the legal framework covering the rights and obligations of the citizens of Catalonia, as well as the region’s financing, political institutions and competences. So he said this morning during an interview with the Spanish radio network Cadena SER. Since he came to power earlier this year, after winning a vote of no con-

fidence against Rajoy, Sánchez has sought to offer messages of dialogue to supporters of Catalan independence - the PSOE has formed a minority government, and is dependent on a wide range of parties to get things done in Congress, including Catalan pro-independence groups. “Catalonia has a statute that it didn’t vote for, and as such there is no political problem,” he said this morning, in reference to the changes made to the text by the Constitutional Court - as a result of an appeal filed by the PP - after it had been voted on by the Catalan people. But Sánchez also had a warning that Article 155 is there and ready to be used should the Catalan regional government opt to take unilateral action once more. “(Article) 155 is a perfectly legitimate instrument to return Catalonia to the Constitution,” he said. “We are not there right now, but if that happens, the government will take action.” The PP government of Mariano Rajoy made use of Article 155 last year after the regional government held an

illegal referendum on independence on 1st October, and then at the end of the month voted a unilateral declaration of independence through the Catalan parliament. Madrid used the article of the Constitution to suspend the region’s autonomous powers, and sack the entire government. After fresh elections were held and a new regional administration formed, led by pro-independence parties, Article 155 was lifted. Strategy The strategy that Sánchez is using - that of offering dialogue, but at the same time making clear that he will be firm if there are difficult decisions to take - marked the interviews he’s given on the subject. The prime minister is offering dialogue, but will not grant the secessionists what they want when it comes to the very delicate issue of the position of the public prosecutor in the ongoing judicial probe into the actions of the Catalan politicians who are either in pre-trail custody, or - like former premier Carles Puigdemont - fled Spain to avoid arrest.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais, Catalan deputy regional premier Pere Aragonés has called on Sánchez to use his influence with the public prosecutor to withdraw the most serious charge against the politicians: that of rebellion, which carries with it a maximum prison sentence of 30 years. A court in Germany has already refused to

extradite Puigdemont to Spain to face that charge, on the basis of insufficient evidence. Speaking to Cadena SER, Sánchez made clear that the public prosecutor is independent and that the central government will respect its autonomy. All eyes in Catalan politics are waiting to see whether there is a shift in this position.

Mallorca property scam victims unprotected Around 60 people who have been affected by an alleged scam in Mallorca, in which properties that didn’t exist were put on sale, say that they feel unprotected under current Spanish law, and are calling for new regulations so that episodes like this one cannot happen again. The real estate company Mallorca Investment was offering off-plan properties in a number of areas on the Balearic island, at below-market prices. Clients handed over 10 percent of the sale price as a deposit, and when the future owners had seen that the plans were filed with the local council, the alleged scammers would take advantage of the situation and ask or more money. However, time would then pass and construction would never began. When the clients demanded explanations, no information was forthcoming. The Civil Guard has so far arrested six people from developer Lujo Casa and the real estate agency Mallorca Investment, who are accused of keeping the deposits handed over by clients. The amount of money swindled from the victims

totals more than €4 million, according to sources from the investigation, which could make this the biggest scam ever perpetrated in the history of the Balearic Islands. The owner of Mallorca Investment, a businessman identified by his initials M. P., and who is of Italian origin, is currently being held in police custody before being brought before a judge. He is suspected of offences of fraud and money laundering. The Italian busi-nessman posted numerous photos of his luxury lifestyle on Facebook, including trips with his family all over the world, business-class flights to Thailand, holiday in Japan, hotel stays in Dubai and car trips in Cuba. The owner of the developer Lujo Casa, identified by his initials C. G. R., fled Spain more than four months ago, when the first complaints from fraud victims put him in the spotlight. Claims began to arrive in the month of March, and in May some of the affected families filed a lawsuit at a court in Palma de Mallorca, demanding all bank accounts be frozen and for an international

arrest warrant to be issued for the promoter, who, sources from the investigation report, is currently in a South American country. “We suspected that we were looking at a case of fraud,” a victims’ statement reads, “after determining that construction had not begun, that a number of the plots of land were not theirs, and that any changes we wanted to the plans were possible and free. We met with a lawyer who confirmed what we already suspected: that this had the look of a pyramid scheme.” More victims joined the initial dozen or so original claimants, with the total thought to number around 200, many of whom are from outside Spain. The victims report that the developer first moved to Barcelona, and then to Valencia, which is where they lost all trace of him. The victims also slammed the owner of the real estate firm, who claimed that he had also been conned. “From the first moment Mallorca Investment introduced itself as a partner,” the victims said in their statement.

The average amount that each person has lost is around €30,000, although there are more extreme cases, such as a foreign man who handed over more than €200,000 on the promise of a luxury apartment close to the sea. Among the victims are young couples who were seeking their first home, retirees, and families with young children. All of the victims say that they feel “unprotected” due to changes made to the law in 2006, ending the right for anyone who had lost money in the purchase of an off-plan property to reclaim the funds from their insurance

company or bank. “We all trusted that, by making a bank transfer to a real estate company account, our money was protected; we thought that this kind of account was controlled by the banks and that it wasn’t so easy to take money out,” the victims’ statement reads. “Although this man was moving it around as he pleased.” The victims have called on the authorities to take measures to ensure that episodes like this one are not repeated. They argue that “the only law that protected us” was abolished to the benefit of the banks.

ORIHUELA PATRON CELEBRATIONS The celebrations will finish with a spectacular fireworks display which marks the Virgin Monserrate’s transfer back to her sanctuary on Sunday 16th September at 8pm just after the final mass of the fiesta, which starts at 7pm which will be presided over by Jesús Murgui, Bishop of the Diocese of OrihuelaAlicante. All residents from across the municipality and beyond are invited to celebrate this fiesta of honour, as Orihuela’s patron is once more given the tribute she deserves, before resting for another year.

It’s fiesta time in Orihuela as the municipality prepares to honour its patron saint, the Virgin of Monserrate. The celebrations include a full schedule of entertainment featuring a variety of fun performances and musical concerts. The Councillor for Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, has detailed the entire programming lined up for the traditional festivities which will run from Thursday 6th to Sunday 16th September. Whilst announcing the programme of events, the Councillor was accompanied by Paco Serna, vice president of the Archconfraternity of the Virgin of Monserrate, who was in charge of ensuring the liturgical and religious events are at the centre of the celebrations. The event began on Thursday with a mass at 8pm, which has been celebrated by the residents of the Rabaloche for the last 10 years, this was followed by the transfer of the icon from its Sanctuary to the Cathedral of El Salvador and an evening serenade concert. The events continued over the weekend and this week, on Wednesday 12th, the programme resumes with the representation of the children’s musical concert “La bruja Eloise”, which will take place in the Ramón Sijé square starting at 9.30pm, with an evening of fun theatre and music for the whole family. On Thursday 13th September at 9.30pm, also in the Ramón Sijé square, a concert will be given by the Orihuela-based “Troupers Swing Band” combining their own songs with versions of swing and rockabilly. On Saturday, 15th September, there will be the traditional besamanto of the Virgin of Monserrate, taking place from 10am to 2pm and from 6pm, “where the Association of Agronomist Engineers of Orihuela will celebrate the Virgin from 12 noon.

History The Virgin of Montserrat, popularly known as La Moreneta, is also the patron saint of Catalonia. Our Lady of Montserrat or the Virgin of Montserrat is a Marian title associated with a venerated statue of the Madonna and Child venerated at the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery on the Montserrat Mountain in Catalonia, Spain. The famed image once bore the inscription “Negra Sum Sed Formosa” which translates from Latin as: “I am Black, but Beautiful”. Pope Leo XIII granted the image a Canonical coronation on 11 September 1881. The image is one of the Black Madonnas of Europe, hence its familiar Catalan name, La Moreneta (the little dark-skinned one or the little dark one). Believed by some to have been carved in Jerusalem in the early days of the Church. However, it is more likely a Romanesque sculpture in wood from the late 12th century. An 18th century polychromed statue of the same image is also displayed in Saint Peter’s basilica, previously stored in the Vatican Museums which was gifted by the President of Brazil, Joao Goulart on the Papal election of Pope Paul VI in 1963. The image has been on display for Papal masses since the Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI.

The festival will gather guitarists from five countries, aimed at making Orihuela the guitar capital of the Mediterranean. Among the guitarists that will participate in the festival are Chencho Arias, Victoria Ash and Juan Carlos López Segura, will perform a tribute in the Hernandian Corner to the figure of the Orihuela poet Miguel Hernandez on 10th September at 9pm. Guitarist José Luis Martínez will perform on Tuesday the 11th at 9pm at the Plaza Ramón Sijé and Serbian-Bosnian Duo Levante will perform on

Wednesday 12th in the Plaza de Togores. There will also be various classes opened to promising young people at the Pedro Terol Municipal Conservatory of Music, which the public are invited to attend. The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana,, extended the invitation to the residents of nearby towns to enjoy the festival.

Galicia fishing boat impounded in Ireland

A fishing boat from Galicia has been impounded in the Republic of Ireland after its crew were accused of cutting the fins off sharks. The Virxe da Blanca (Virgin in White) is being held off the port of Castletown in the south of the country after an inspection of its practices led authorities to believe the fishermen were guilty of finning. This is illegal in Europe, although common-place in east and south-east Asia, where sharks are caught, their fins removed and the remainder of the creature is thrown back in the sea. The fins - considered a delicacy, especially in China - are then typically made into soup. In the case of the Virxe da Blanca, which has passed every single inspection up to now, the fishermen say they were acting in accordance with EU norms: after catching Blue Sharks (Prionace Glauca) and whilst cleaning them for future sale, the crew cut off the anal fins, which are located exactly where the name suggests. The fishing industry does not consider these fins; rather, an attachment or appendix, because they are very fragile

and do not serve the same purpose as the main fins. Sergio López of the Fishing Producers' Organisation (OPP) in Lugo, which the boat - based in Burela - belongs to, says all previous inspections of the Virxe da Blanca’s Blue Shark-catching practices have been signed off as legal, and believes the vessel has been impounded due to a misunderstanding. According to López, the SecretaryGeneral for Fishing has already written to port and fishing authorities, and is hoping the issue will be satisfactorily cleared up very soon. And Spain’s industry for fishing says it is waiting to hear back from its counterpart in Ireland, but assures that the crew has not been formally accused of any offence against EU regulations. The 13-strong multi-national crew, of whom three are from Galicia, used to fish off Spain’s northern coast catching white tuna, known as Bonito in Spain and a popular dish in fish restaurants along the Cantabrian Sea regions, but were experiencing disappointing results from their trade and decided to branch out internationally two years ago.

INTERNATIONAL TOURIST ARRIVALS SLOWING DOWN IN SPAIN Fewer foreign tourists have come to Spain this summer season than in 2017, which was a record year for the sector. International arrivals numbered 9.98 million in the month of July, a 4.9 percent drop from the same period last year. Spain’s biggest markets have been sending fewer visitors: the number of British tourists fell by 5.6 percent in July, while there was a 11.4 percent drop in visitors from France and 6.2 percent from Germany. Barring natural events – such as the emissions from the Iceland volcano that paralyzed air traffic for several days in April 2010, slowing down visits to Spain by 13 percent – the figure for July 2018 represents the biggest decline in international tourist arrivals since 2009, when the economic crisis led to monthly drops of between 10 percent and 15 percent. However, the July figure of 9.98 million international visitors is only low compared to last year’s all-time high of 10.5 million. The 10-million threshold has been crossed three times in recent history, twice in the month of August and once in July. Industry leaders are also pointing to a recovery of alternative sun and sand destinations such as Tunisia and Turkey, whose tourism sector had suffered in recent years from terrorist attacks and regional instability. In the case of Turkey, the recent depreciation of the lira has made the country even more attractive to foreign tourists. Also, exceptionally warm weather in northern Europe has made it unnecessary to fly to Spain to enjoy the beach.

France, Britain and even Finland and Norway have experienced a hot summer, while in Russia, the temperature in June was eight degrees higher than usual. Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto has played down the year-on-year drop from July 2017, saying that the government wants “a strategy based on quality” and “diversification” in order to avoid overcrowding. “We are going to get behind a strategy based on quality, aware that there is going to be a slowdown in tourism flows. It is already happening,” said Maroto at a news conference in Santander recently. But the minister also underscored that the accumulated figure for the last seven months shows 47.1 million tourist arrivals, a 0.3 percent rise from the same period last year. She also said that tourist spending has grown 3 percent so far this year. Maroto added that her department wants to diversify the options for

tourists because there are currently very overcrowded destinations and this is creating problems with local residents. The minister did not directly allude to the anti-tourist sentiment that has cropped up in parts of Spain due to the mass tourism in some city centres. The Balearic Islands continued to top the list of favourite tourist destinations in July 2018, receiving 24.4 percent of all foreign tourists in Spain. Catalonia ranked second with 23.9 percent, followed by Andalusia with 13.3 percent. In spite of this, arrivals declined in all three regions. The Madrid region experienced the opposite trend, with a 6.7 percent rise in foreign tourists in July. The tourists who did come spent fewer days in Spain compared with other years. The average stay in July was four to seven nights.

Airline sickness bug A mystery sickness bug left a number of British passengers ‘falling ill’ on a Jet2 flight from Spain and triggered an emergency response. Ambulances, police and fire brigades were waiting to attend affected travellers when the flight arrived at Leeds Bradford Airport at 9.45pm last Saturday. The plane had flown from Reus, near holiday hotspot Salou in Catalunya.

Paramedics described how four passengers were ‘being violently sick to the point where one passed out’ and shut the plane doors to avoid the illness spreading. Police on the scene believe it to be ‘nothing more than a sickness bug’. A Jet2 spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that the crew on board flight LS298 from Reus to Leeds Bradford Airport arranged an ambulance for two passengers who were taken ill.

‘The crew were alerted to a further two, non-associated cases of passengers feeling unwell on board. ‘On arrival, as a precaution they were immediately checked over in the ambulance before heading home. ‘All other passengers disembarked as normal and continued their journeys. The safety and care of our customers is always our first priority.’

HEALTH FACTS Drinking coffee can prevent depression We hear a lot about the negative effects of caffeine on our health, but it turns out that caffeine has its good points too. Research from the Harvard School of Public Health found that women who drank a minimum of four cups of coffee per day could lower their risk of depression by 20 per cent. Earlier research also found that females who drank two or more cups per day were less likely to commit suicide. Chewing gum makes you more alert If your suffering from a mid-afternoon slump or can’t seem to concentrate in the morning, then try chewing some gum to make you feel awake. Coventry University researchers found that chewing mint flavoured gum dramatically reduced feelings of tiredness. Another study on the subject found that chewing gum can improve overall test scores and memory by 35 per cent, relieve stress and reduce anxiety levels.

SKIN BOOSTING REHYDRATION TREATMENT AT MEDCARE

Regardless of anything else we do to protect our skin, poor hydration may undermine our efforts, leaving the skin looking noticeably damaged. Over-the-counter creams only temporarily moisturise the skin at the surface rather than providing deep, long-lasting hydration. So, while some of us reach for ever richer moisturisers to apply, others are choosing to inject moisture into their skin! Most skin boosters in the market are made of hyaluronic acid, and help provide hydration, increase moisture levels, and increase subdermal collagen production. These rehydrating fillers help to deeply hydrate the skin from beneath, firming and plumping your complexion. Eradicating fine facial lines, this treatment is particularly effective around the lips. Skin appears smoother, more luminous, younger and fresher. No other treatment works within the skin structure to moisturize, plump and increase skin density and elasticity by directly replenishing is rehydrating function. The skin boosting treatment is, “administered through a series of tiny injections that works to plump and hydrate skin, smoothing out roughness and evening out depressions,” Medcare’s Dr Hussain explains. “But the results are subtle and it’s more about age-proofing the face instead of turning back the clock. In Dr Hussain’s opinion, “this rehydration treatment

is the perfect choice for those who want to improve their overall skin quality, as it visibly improves luminosity, elasticity and hydration, as well as the appearance of fine lines.” Dr Hussain uses an award-winning rejuvenation product, Teosyal Redensity 1. It is designed to restore luminosity, hydration and tone to the skin. In this regard, it serves a different purpose than most injectable fillers in the fact that it is a light filling innovation that specifically targets dull complexion, fine lines, and dehydrated skin on your face, neck, décolletage and hands. Redensity is an extremely PURE product consisting of 8 amino acids, 3 antioxidants, 2 minerals, hydrating hyaluronic acid, and 1 vitamin – all ingredients naturally present in the skin. It is a new concept, developed by Teoxane Laboratories in Geneva, which combines dermal filling techniques and mesotherapy to restore the skin’s ability to reflect light. At Medcare Dr Hussain can provide you with a skin condition consultation free of charge and you can find out if you could benefit from this innovative skin treatment. The doctor will also discuss any alternatives that she thinks you might benefit from. Also available at Medcare are cosmetic surgery, GP services, dentistry, osteopathy and psychotherapy. For an appointment call 966 860 258 or email doctors@medcarespain.com

Instagram launches 'wellbeing' guide for parents Instagram’s new guide is designed to help parents talk to their children about privacy, safety and time spent online. The social media giant launched a new parent-oriented guide that helps them tackle topics like safeguarding their privacy, controlling who can comment on their posts and managing their time spent in the app. The move comes as tech companies and consumers alike have started paying more attention to social media and device addiction. 'We know that as a parent it may be hard to understand the changing digital landscape and what your kids are doing online,' Instagram explains on the site. 'That's why we've created this resource. We're here to fill you in on what Instagram is all about, give you some conversation starters for you and your teen, and show you some of the tools that are in place to keep your teen safe.' The guide ranges from very basic things, like a glossary of commonly used terms on Instagram, such as 'block,' 'IGTV' or 'Stories,' to more complex topics, like how to filter out offensive comments on the app. It instructs parents to discuss with their children whether they should make their account public or private and what kinds of privacy controls they have on the app. These controls include things like filtering out certain offensive words from appearing in comments, blocking users and disabling people from commenting on posts entirely. Users can also choose specific groups

that can comment on posts and report comments they deem offensive or inappropriate. The site also breaks down the kinds of time management tools that are offered on Instagram. Instagram rolled out these features in recent months and they're aimed at helping users become more aware of just how much time they're spending in the app on a daily or weekly basis. Users can also set reminders that limit how much time they spend on the app each day, as well as mute notifications from Instagram for the remainder of the day. The firm is expected to roll out more time management features in future app updates. While none of these features are new, Instagram executives explained in a supplementary video that it's likely most parents aren't aware that such privacy and time management controls exist in the app.

They added that even simply knowing how the app works can help parents start a conversation with their children about how they use Instagram. Instagram also included a list of prompts to help steer that conversation between parents and kids. This ranges from questions about how their child would respond to bullying on Instagram to whether or not they've ever felt uncomfortable by content shared on the app. What's more, the firm noted that it consulted with a variety of outside organizations to develop the guide, including the National Alliance for Mental Illness, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center and the National Eating Disorder Association, among many others. The guide can be downloaded for a variety of countries at: https://help.instagram.com/2994841135 84685

Driving in Rain Changes in the weather provides significant risk to road users, and so our driving must be adapted at all times. Rain is one of the biggest contributors to weather related incidents. In Spain, long, dry periods are often followed by significant rainfall. In the first rainfall after a dry spell, the roads are particularly hazardous, as water falls onto the dust and surface coating on the road, creating extremely poor

adhesion in places. Plus, drainage systems are not always able to cope with the immediacy of the downpour, and so roads become flooded, particularly in dips which are designed to control the flow of water. When driving in wet weather, slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. This will mean that you should allow extra time for your journey, or be prepared to arrive late. It is

far better to arrive late, than not at all. Movements should be slow and steady, not harsh, to ensure your tyres are able to maintain as much grip as possible, and if you think you or your vehicle are not prepared to drive in wet conditions, then don´t. Windscreen wipers and headlights will allow for better visibility, not only for you, but other road users too. Take care, take it easy and take it slow.

RODS & REELS This week we were on the river Segura at Murcia to fish the 1st round of the Summer Championship on the 5th September.

The banks are now very overgrown and a lot of the fishermen had to clear their pegs before they could begin the match, but not all of them carry the appropriate tools to clear the overgrowth which they really should do. The water fished very patchy with the top weight going to Lennie Bolton with 21.520kgs in second place was Dave Hutchinson with 10.340kgs and coming in third was his wife Marlene Hutchinson with 10.120kgs

This week members were involved in an exciting two day Club Drawn Pairs competition. There were 32 entries in total and the competition was decided on shots. Members were drawn in 4 groups, and played all the group members in 8 ends or one hour matches. Then the pair with the highest shot score overall in each group played in the semi-finals, and the winners of the semi-finals battled it out in the final. The semi-finalists were Dee Stephenson and Martin Richardson, Hazel Frost and Steve Hibberd, Jacqui Johnston and George Carnell and Terry Morgan and Norma Lamberton After a hard fought final Terry and Norma eventually won with Jackie and George gallant runners up. After the presentation members were treated to a hot and cold buffet kindly provided free of charge, by Ian and Marie, our hosts from The Club, Quesada. A lovely gesture, that everyone appreciated and enjoyed. Next week it’s the semi finals and finals of the SABA competition which has been running thoughout the Summer. Quesada will be represented in the Ladies Singles semi-final by defending champion, Carol Broomfield and in the Mens Semifinal by Terry Morgan. Good luck to both players Just a reminder that, open to visitors, our popular Saturday morning Chicken Drive is continuing during the summer

SACKED IN THE MORNING ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

P

anic at Wembley as sound of huge bubble bursting deafens 80,000 people Well, you know what happens when you buck a trend. Gareth Southgate led England out for the first time without a waistcoat and look what happens. England get beaten by a much better team. No waistcoat equals no party, clearly. Wembley was full of people and full of hope and optimism and all that other fluff that happens after England put in a couple of good summer performances. It was almost as if they hadn’t noticed that when England played proper football teams in Russia they actually lost. And on Saturday night they played a proper football team in Spain. And lost. Gareth Southgate had said several times that England “must stick to their principles” after the World Cup 4th place finish and I think we can all agree that England very much stuck to the principle of being a little dodgy at the back, not that good in possession and pretty toothless in attack against a Spanish side just relieved to not have Fernando Hierro in the dugout. Yes, yes England should have had a very-deep-into-injury-time equaliser when David de Gea pole-vaulted over the top of Danny Welbeck and dropped the ball, allowing the Arsenal man to tap the ball home. Welbeck was, obviously, penalised for standing still as another player jumped into him – but that’s what happens if you are a goalkeeper, isn’t it? Harry Kane accused the referee of ‘bottling it’ which is kind of ironic to those of us that still remember how many shots Harry got on target when it really mattered in the knockout stages. Anyway, isn’t David de Gea meant to be rubbish nowadays? I am pretty sure that’s what I’ve been reading (and probably writing) since before the World Cup. He looked alright to me when he

tipped Rashford’s header away. Mind you, had Welbeck’s goal stood there would have been a few fingers pointing his way again. Randomly, it was a player who flopped at Bolton Wanderers who scored the winning goal. Rodrigo managed to completely flummox both Harry Kane and John Stones by not standing still in the penalty area as the free-kick came across. John Stones has England form of letting a man run off him and, yet again, it could be argued that Harry Maguire could have been doing a better job sweeping up round the back. But hey, we are not here to actually fix problems, are we Gareth? At some point, the rose-tinted glasses do need to come off about Gareth Southgate. Don’t get me wrong, he is a great guy in the media and I love how he communicates. I like how he is trying to get England to play football a bit better than we have done for a generation. But, let’s be honest here – against the bigger, better nations we are getting found out. Southgate hasn’t beaten any of the ‘bigger nations’ in competitive or friendly football and that does need to change at some point. I am not saying he needs to go or anything, I am just saying that we need to not fall into the trap of thinking he is

an English Peppy G and completely gloss over the fact that he needs to improve as a coach in certain match situations. Like, when we are playing a team that is clearly better on the ball than we are. And Gareth, don’t fall into that age-old trap of believing the captain isn’t droppable if he is playing rubbish like Harry is right now. Only the stone-hearted (Jose, for example) would not be feeling a little bit sorry for Luke Shaw right now. He was looking like a world-beater when he broke his leg against PSV a couple of seasons ago and has only now just started to find some reliable form. His pass to Rashford for the opening goal was the kind of pass left feet were made for. Yet, his evening ended laying poleaxed on the floor, out cold, after a challenge from Dani Carvajal. Hopefully, Shaw won’t be out for too long otherwise it might just give Mourinho another excuse not to pick him. One man Jose Mourinho would love to be picking is Harry Maguire, but it looks like Harry has been taking lessons of Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin. No, not on how to become a miserly centreback, sadly. Maguire watched Godin use Manchester United to wangle himself a better deal in Madrid and decided he could probably do the same. Not in

Madrid, though. Leicester. Yes, Harry has a signed a new five-year-contract with the Foxes that will tie him to the club until at least next summer when his price will, no doubt, be nearer £100m because of inflation and that new contract. There was even crazy talk of Mourinho being interested in taking free-agent John Terry to Old Trafford. I mean, that’s crazy, right? There’s more chance of JT ending up somewhere like Spartak Moscow than United. What? Wait a minute. Are you kidding me? Yes, John Terry has signed a two-year-contract with Russian Premier League club Spartak Moscow. It’s one of those moments where I don’t even need to try and deliver you a punchline. Zinedine Zidane won’t be that fussed that JT isn’t available when he takes over from Jose at Old Trafford because he already has a list of players he wants to join him in Manchester. Ex-Real Madrid manager Zidane would love Toni Kroos, James Rodriguez, Thiago Alcantara and Edinson Cavani to hot-foot it to the nearest airport as soon as his arrival has been announced. Beautifully, this list is almost the exact list of players

David Moyes gave to Ed Woodward four years ago. You see, Fergie was right. Moyes was the one. Even more bizarre than the fact that Moyes might have been on the right track at United is the news that he was in the States the other day watching the USA lose to Brazil. Moyseh on holiday, you might think? No, no and thrice no. David is being lined up as the next Head Coach of America. And they wonder why soccer is going backwards Stateside. Arsenal fans are getting quite excited by the bromance developing between Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. They are hoping that having two strikers who actually like each other might increase the chance of the team scoring goals. It’s a valid hope, of course, but it still doesn’t solve the fact that the backline is bobbins and Petr Cech looks like a clown when the ball is at his feet. Finally today, and boy haven’t we done well to mask the fact it is an international break and there is nothing going on, Anthony Rudiger is preferring Maurizio Sarri’s style to that of Antonio Conte. And that, we are sure, has nothing to do with the fact that Ruds is actually getting a game under Sarri.

Observations from the Outfield ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Alastair Cook retires as he has actually run out of partners It’s been a fantastic summer of Test cricket but, like all good Test series’, it has had it’s challenges as I realised last week. Naturally, hours before last week’s column hit the press, Alastair Cook announced his retirement from Test cricket after I had spent a lot of time pushing the case for Keaton Jennings to be bombed out and Rory Burns being called up as Cook’s (final) long-term partner. That’s cricket for you. England’s greatest ever (if you count the volume of runs) opening batsman said he had “nothing left in the tank” and, frankly, who can blame him considering some of the players he has been made to walk to the crease with in recent years. So, rather than have to make friends with yet another likely failure, Cook has decided to call it a day at the end of the

5th Test against India. Cook has scored an extraordinary amount of runs (12,254 at the close of play on Sunday when he was still in) in the twelve years since he made a ton on debut in India. In fact, and I am probably making this stat up, he has probably scored more runs than all of the other opening partners he has had combined. And now, there will be no more excessive leaving of the ball outside off. There will be no more carefully placed shots to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Looking at the potential replacements, I think we can all agree there won’t be another Alastair Cook for a very long time. Cook got his best score of the series in the 1st innings of the 5th Test at the Kia Oval, notching up 71 before playing on. This summer has been a story of poor starts by England saved by decent batting in the mid-to-lower-order but, until Joss Buttler put in another very mature shift, it was about Cook’s score as England toiled. But Buttler, surprisingly supported by Stuart Broad of all people, managed to move England north of 300 and set India a decent score to try and get past.

The 5th Test, at the time of writing, has only been worth watching in the evenings – which is standard at the Oval if you buy into the old adage of “Red Duke in the morning, bowler’s warning. Red Duke at night, bowler’s delight”. On each of the three days so far, the morning and afternoon sessions have been slow going. As soon as the tea bell has been rung, the bowlers have been chucking down bananas. England led by 45 at the turnaround and, most of the time, they go on to win from there. That said, India’s bowlers must have been played and missed at more times than Keaton Jennings has scored runs in this Test series. Time and time again the ball beat the bat of the left-handers without a nick in site. India have certainly done as much as they can in many ways this summer, but they must wonder how they have failed to score more runs than this utterly inconsistent England unit. I find myself coming back round to the subject of the opening bats as this series is done and dusted and England will probably have won this 5th Test by the time you read it. Can we not just chuck it to Jason Roy and Alex Hales? I mean, at least they can attack a bit if they get their

eye in. I’ve not seen enough of Rory Burns to have any kind of opinion – though, primarily due to his inability to stay in long enough I have also seen very little of Keaton Jennings – but I would still like to see England see if they can bring more of their ODI game to the Test arena. And, to any person who says to me that it is a different discipline I refer you to Joss Buttler – he is England’s best ODI bat and,

Alastair Cook

right now, he is England’s most consistent Test bat so don’t stand there telling me the ODI boys can’t play Test cricket. Matches are the shortest they have ever been yet the runs are heavier than they have ever been – surely we can take that to the next level? Alastair Cook retiring is the end of an era – is it time to define the next era of opening the batting in Test cricket?
