Waste plant could destroy lake O

pposition is growing to plans to build a waste treatment plant between San Miguel de Salinas and Torrevieja. The plant, is planned on the La Finca Lo Timur which is to the North West of the salt lake and between San Miguel de Salinas and Torrevieja. This location is only 900 metres from the wetland surrounding the salt lake which is considered to be an area of natural beauty. The Grupo Salins who run the salt works linked to the lake are one of the organisations coming out most strongly against the plans. They are concerned that building this plant so close to the lake could contaminate the water in there. Both a deluge of rain or gradual seepage could mean that the lake carries impurities that would impede the creation of salt and harm the wildlife and fauna that live in the area.

The plant is not a landfill site but is for treatment of waste only and it would mean a large number of refuse lorries would be entering and leaving the site. The quantity of traffic would be increased because the proposed site is more of a sorting centre with lorries taking rubbish away for either landfill or recycling elsewhere. The finca, which is the proposed location for the site, is only 900 metres from the shore of the Torrevieja lake and 600 from the edge of the natural park. This is an area that not only plays host to the successful salt mining industry but is also a recognised bird sanctuary. The only barrier between the finca and the reserve is the CV-943 road. The business responsible for the treatment plant, OHL, is applying to the town hall of San Miguel but they must also

have agreement from environmental departments located in Valencia. However, access for lorries will be on land in Torrevieja and Los Montesinos. The value of the plant is estimated to be more than 40 million euros and it would be responsible for treating around 120,000 tons of solid urban waste a year. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Please, taste the water NEWS: A court has ruled that the town council of Torrevieja must provide back dated pay to eleven police officers. The Local Police officers are owed a total of €50,000 that dates back to payment for wages since 2007. The 11 officers were part of the traffic and district police department and they were paid less than officers of the same rank working in the neighbourhood departments. This was in spite of the fact that the officers were carrying out the same tasks. The reason for this anomaly was that those on a higher salary were working on a split day whilst their colleagues worked on a continuous day basis. The difference in monthly salary being around €50. The officers can claim money back from four years prior to the time when they first registered their complaint, to the present day. The local government has pointed out that no police officers now perform a split day, and as such, the lower salary should really be the one that is received by all.

centre of Spain were perhaps most cynical of this attempt to promote Torrevieja’s water and questioned whether it really can be drunk. The tasting involved trying samples from different sources including bottled water and water from the desalination plant. The samples were numbered and those trying them had no idea which was which. Many of those who tried, indicated that the tap water sample was the one they preferred. Currently Agamed has around 120,000 customers locally and is keen for them to recognise the quality of what they pay for every month. They want to boost the

The campaign is also being supported by councillor Fanny Serrano. She explained that they are particularly targeting foreign residents and tourists who are perhaps particularly suspicious about the water’s quality. ‘Tap water is perfectly safe to drink,’ says the councillor. ‘It’s also cheaper than buying bottled water and avoids the purchase of plastic bottles too.’ However, many of those taking part in the water tasting event were still unconvinced. Tourists from the north and

consumption of tap water and reduce the amount of bottle water that finds its way off the shelves. Shoppers were not only tasting the water but were also asking about its cost. Drinking water in this part of the country comes from several sources, including Trasvase Tajo-Segura, the Segura basin and the desalination plant. It requires high investment to ensure that this product arrives in your home ready to drink. Suzanne O’Connell

The tourist information office in Torrevieja are often asked ‘Can we drink the water here?’. Now, the company responsible for water provision in the town, Agamed, has increased their campaign to make people aware of the quality of the water that they have on tap. Shoppers entering the indoor market in Torrevieja might have been rather taken back when asked to take part in a water tasting event. They were asked to check the colour, smell and taste the samples of water offered to them. Was this any different to the water they might be buying in bottles from their local supermarket? Could it even taste better?

Turtle rescued in Playa Flamenca A turtle had a luck escape on Thursday when a swimmer rescued it from certain death. At about 4:45pm the swimmer found a small loggerhead turtle entangled in a plastic bag, part of which, maybe in an attempt to free itself, it had eaten. The Local Police for Orihuela and the Lifeguard Service from

Playa Flamenca Beach immediately started the correct protocol by calling 112. This call alerted the experts at the Conselleria Medio Ambiente and Oceanogràfic, who then travelled from Valencia to take charge of and care for the little chap, who as well as generally needing help, belongs to a protected species.

BITE SIZE Cats poisoned on the NEWS: Orihuela Costa Continued from page 3 anniversary of the Real Madrid Supporters Club in Torrevieja. It is one of the oldest in the country and was first launched in 1958. The result did not go in Torrevieja’s favour, however. The score was 7 to 2 to the Real Madrid players. Players on the field included Amavisca, Velasco, Congo, Iván Campo, Contreras and Morales. The players had arrived the day before, stayed over night in a hotel and were treated to a dinner by the supporters’ club. The whole event was sponsored by Cox Energy. The day began with fans enjoying a giant paella to the accompaniment of music. There was a photo call and activities for children. Those who attended could also have their photo taken with a replica of the European Cup which Real Madrid has won on 13 occasions.

ComarCON success It might have been pouring with rain but there was no shortage of turnout to the first day of ComarCON on Saturday. This alternative games and ‘geek’ event is becoming increasingly popular every year and this year is reported to have attracted more than 6,000 young people. It’s appeal is for those who enjoy videogames, table top games and roleplay. Stalls include comics, many of which are linked to Japanese culture. Taking place in the Sports Palace were 150 prepared activities and 120 table top games which continued throughout the 23 hours the event was open. There was plenty of merchandise on sale too with everything from mugs and stuffed animals to purses, shirts, hats and masks. Fortnite, the popular video game of the moment, was there in force. Not only could you play games but you could dress as your favourite character and even eat their food. Some stalls were selling ‘ramen’ which is a typical Japanese dish and there was also a butter beer on sale in honour of Harry Potter. The event was free to enter and has become a landmark celebration of alternative leisure in Spain.

Tourism Congress closes The fourth international congress of residential tourism closed in Torrevieja on 15th September. The congress had provided opportunity for the local government to assess Torrevieja’s tourism strategy plan. It is recognised that development escalated almost out of control between the 1960s and the 1980s. However, Councillor Fanny Serrano pointed out that 53% of Torrevieja is in fact a protected area and cannot be built on. A fact that contradicts the perception of Torrevieja being nothing more than a concrete jungle. Influential factors in the way that Torrevieja has developed include the earthquake which destroyed the majority of buildings in 1829. Following this the emphasis was on the construction of low level buildings rather than the skyscrapers that feature in Benidorm. Now, an emphasis is placed on ensuring that all activities are planned with consideration for the environment. One area that needs to be addressed is the high density of Continued on page 8

At least four stray cats have died recently in Dehesa de Campoamor, with symptoms pointing to poisoning. It will now be down to Seprona to investigate the cause. The four felines were found very close to each other and in the vicinity, food remains were found next to containers that could have been tampered with to poison the animals. The Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC), which calls for control of the colonies of feral cats, has condemned these events through social networks providing photographs and asking neighbours to "not take justice into their own hands" with regard to the colonies of feral cats. In addition, he stressed the danger other animals or even children, by leaving poisoned food out on the street. There are localised colonies of

more than 30 cats each in Aguamarina, the Philippines, Campoamor and PAU 8. The City of Orihuela is attached to the CES program (Capture, Sterilisation and Drops), but the results are not as good as expected. Many cats are not castrated and litters are still being born that form new colonies, and always based around a source of food. Feeding cats is not forbidden, but leaving traces of food and containers on public roads can lead to fines. In fact, there are volunteers attached to the CES program who have a feeder card to feed these cats in an orderly and regulated manner, with dry food. The problem is that there are many who carry food, mostly leftovers, and uncontrollably feed these animals with the false belief that they are not self-sufficient.

Tax man catches up with unlicensed swimming pools A total of 825 swimming pools have been identified in Torrevieja as not having had the correct planning permission. During 2016 the department of finance in Torrevieja conducted an investigation into the number and siting of households which have swimming pools but do not have them on their deeds. Without the correct licences, not only have the owners saved the cost of obtaining them but also paying taxes subsequently on the increased value of their property through council tax IBI. However, now SUMA has amended its records to include the possession of a swimming pool and tax bills have been adjusted accordingly. Tax can be backdated retrospectively for the last three years. Of the 825 new constructions, 297 of these are swimming pools alone and 528 also comprise additional buildings such as porches or extensions. The purge on illegal builds began in 2015 when the Catastro office, who are responsible for the recording of rateable value, announced to the town halls that

they would be checking that their records matched the actual premises on the ground. The project took two years and involved extensive field work that included the use of drones to access areas that were difficult to reach. Most of the illegal construction work has taken place between 2006 and 2018. For those who have received additional tax demands there could be other sanctions round the corner. The town council will also now open files on property where there isn’t a licence and property owners will need to either regularise their situation or risk further fines and sanctions. These could even lead to the demolition of any additional buildings depending on the designation of the land their built on. Where the additional pools and buildings are located on urban land then it should be possible to legalise them. However, there may be situations where this is not the case. Suzanne O’Connell

Plea for storage space to help Elche Children’s Home Elche Children´s Home has been given an extremely generous donation of items that it can sell or distribute to help the children, but they desperately need somewhere to store the goods and are looking for some help. The Home has launched an urgent appeal to try to find storage space, after a local wholesaler donated 10,000 pieces of children’s clothing to be sold or distributed for the benefit of children in need. Maybe you have a garage, lock up or an out building that is watertight and isn’t used. According to Michelle Diggle, fundraiser for the Home: “There is so much that we are going to sell some to raise funds for the ECCH. We will donate the remaining items to other children’s charities. However, before we can do that

we need to find a large storage facility in which we can store and sort the items which has easy access. We will probably need the facility for at least six months as there are summer and winter clothes and we will need time to sell them over the coming months.” If you have such a storage area available, which you would like to offer, free of charge, for the use of the charity please e-mail them directly on info@ecch.es or call 63 43 61 887. If you don´t have a facility, you can still do your bit by passing this request on, asking around, talking to your friends, asking local businesses and just spreading the word. The more people know about the need for storage, hopefully, the quicker the need will be met.

It can’t be done in eight months! The PP cannot fulfil the demands that Ciudadanos (C) has made for providing their support. This was the announcement made by shadow mayor, Eduardo Dolón. ‘We must be honest, we cannot execute all of the 30 demands that we’ve been given in the remaining months of this mandate.’ Torrevieja is edging towards the next local elections in May 2019 and it is unsurprising that there is jostling for position by the local political parties. The current local government, consisting of four parties, has almost managed its full term. A situation that many would have thought impossible when they first agreed to work together. Over the last few weeks, however, the PP opposition party has recognised an opportunity to step up and take back the reins in the closing months of this mandate. The controversy over the payment of August wages to council workers has provided a lever for opponents of José Manuel Dolón of the Green Party. However, the PP need support from another opposition political party to be able to remove the current government team. Ciudadanos (C) has two

elected members who currently sit in opposition. They have been targeted by the PP as possible collaborators. Initially the Cs seemed reluctant to join forces with the PP, although both have right wing leanings and some policies in common. Now, the Cs are looking more favourably towards cooperation and have suggested that they might be prepared to support the leadership bid if the PP agree to their terms and conditions. These include a lengthy ‘to do’ list that the PP is now suggesting is not possible within the eight month time frame they’ve been given. However, the PP still want to meet with Ciudadanos around the negotiating table to see what might be done and have asked for the Cs to reconsider their list and identify their priorities.Projects that could be discussed include finding solutions to the problems of the indoor market, the opening of the disabled centre and the Holy Week Museum. However, there is no solution in sight to the conundrum of the Municipal Theatre. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Casino controversy Spanish women live NEWS: the longest continues Continued from page 5 cars in the town centre and the difficulties this creates for movement and use of the facilities there. It was also recognised during the discussions that there is a need to rethink residential tourism and to promote activities for the elderly due to the increase in life expectancy. Professor Armando Ortuño, from the University of Alicante, pointed out the need to take into consideration those who have retired from other countries and do not integrate with Spanish people in the town. The recent waves of feeling against tourism should not be seen as antitourism but more as a rejection of the models of tourism management that have grown and created a conflict of interests.

The casino in Torrevieja is currently at the centre of an argument between its members. The disagreement is over when there will be elections to select its board of directors. The lack of consensus has now erupted into accusations by a member of the casino association during a presentation by its vice president. The vice president, Rosario Soler, was

the target of the verbal attack whilst presenting the programme of cultural activities for the coming year on 10th September. A member of the audience got to his feet and accused her of lying. The presentation had followed the normal course of such an event until the end when Rosario asked if anyone had any questions. At this point, a member of the audience, got to his feet and asked ‘When will there be a general meeting to choose a new president?’. The vice president then explained that an election had been suspended due to a leak of data which could leave them vulnerable to crimes under the protection of personal data legislation. Until this was addressed, no election could take place.

The aggrieved member, Alfonso Esteve, then accused Soler of lying, following which the press conference was suspended and Esteve asked to leave the building. The subject of the press conference, the casino diary for the coming year, was overshadowed by the outburst. It has been suggested that some of the

disagreement about the election comes from deep-rooted sexism and the wish to prevent a women taking the presidency for the first time. The casino is over a 100 years old and an iconic landmark that is closely guarded by those who are members there. It also hosts a number of cultural events and talks, which the press release had been intended to promote. Although the building is open to the public and many tourists it is also considered to be a haven for its members who have privileged seats and other benefits. Presiding over the building is now being hotly contested and there doesn’t seem to be any agreement in sight. Suzanne O’Connell

Spanish women have the highest life expectancy in Europe at birth. According to an analysis by Public Health England, the women in Spain come out top at 86.3 years followed by France and Italy. The UK is ranked in 17th place out of the 28 EU countries that are featured in the table. At the bottom are Bulgaria, Romania and Latvia. The results are based on informationpublicised by Public Health England as part of its Health Profile. This brings together a variety of reports, data and research to provide a picture of the health of people in England in 2018. One of the reports it draws on is that of Eurostat data from 2016. Obesity is one of the reasons being given for the difference between the two countries. The Mediterranean diet has long been referred to as a major reason for longevity, both for the nutrients it provides and also as a combatant to obesity. Men in Spain do not do quite as well. Their life expectancy at birth is down to 80.1

years. However, this is still relatively high in comparison to many other countries and again beats the UK whose men have a life expectancy of 79.4. Top of the charts are the men in Italy who can expect to live until they are 81 years old. Life expectancy at birth is an indicator of the number of years a baby could expect to live if mortality patterns when it is born stay the same throughout its life. Suzanne O’Connell

HELP Vega Baja makes dreams come true Many families are unable to take their children on a day out to places such as Terra Mitica and to build memories together that will last a lifetime. For this reason, HELP Vega Baja decided that it would step in and on a recent Wednesday volunteers from the charity were up early and ready to take 50 children and parents for a day to remember at Terra Mitica. The families, all referred from the Town Halls in San Miguel, Benijofar and Almoradi were in for a treat. The charity greeted their guests for the day with goody bags and they were waved off by representatives from all three Town Halls, including the Concejal de Bienestar social Basilia Valero and Laura Educadora from San

to take off into orbit and breathing a sigh of relief when they saw them sitting enjoying an ice-cream in the sunshine, safely back on terra firma! Michele said: “When we first thought of the idea it all seemed quite easy to organise but I have to say there was a lot involved to ensure that the day was a success. I have to thank everyone involved including the Town Halls, HELP volunteers, Jessica and David at Euro Tours and of course a great friend of the charity Beatriz Lara from the Casaverde Fundación who was our link with social workers and made sure everything was in order and even came along on the morning to all the pick-up points to wave everyone off.

Miguel, Alcalde Luis Rodríguez and Marisol Trabajadora social from Benijofar and Alfonso Garcia Concejal de Bienestar social and Maria Fernanda jefa de servicios sociales. A very excited coach of people arrived in Terra Mitica with entrance tickets, lunch tickets and money for an ice-cream all in hand and all wearing brand new baseball caps. President of the charity, Michele Masson and Welfare officer Wendy Burton went along and armed with everything from clip boards to wet wipes walked around the park for the next 6 hours watching as the children ran from ride to ride, not daring to look as some went on rides that looked like they were going

“The day was a complete success and the smiles on the faces of the now sleepy children when we arrived home and they collected their last bag of goodies said it all. We will remember the day for a very long time and I hope it provided the families a memory that will stay with them too.” For more information on the work that HELP Vega Baja does in the community call 966 723 733 or visit the HELP Vega Baja website at www.helpvegabaja.com The charity also recently launched a confidential & emotional support helpline called Connections which is available 24 hours a day on 965 021 552

Campaign to prevent Torrevieja family sold Ryanair drugs to school children addictions in young people strike A family of drug dealers has been detained following the discovery that they have been selling drugs to local school children. The family are comprised of three generations including the grandmother, mother and grandson. It was the 16 year old grandson who sold marijuana, hashish and cocaine to his fellow students at secondary school as well as other young people in the city whilst his grandmother and mother managed the operation. The Guardia Civil has now arrested the three people, the two women being 61 and 37 years old of Colombian and Spanish nationality. They have been charged with the crime of drug trafficking as well as the use of minors in a criminal activity. The alarm was raised last April when the police became aware that someone was selling drugs to students in the city. An investigation was opened, focussing initially on the young man who was 15 at the time. Whilst the investigation was underway, the youth was expelled from school because of his behaviour and not for reasons linked to drug trafficking. As a result, sales to his peers in school reduced but he increased his reach to a wider circle of young people in Torrevieja.

During the investigation it was revealed that it was the mother who was using her son to sell the drugs. The mother obtained the drugs and managed the operation, including the storing and hiding of drugs in their home and also fixed the sale price. Following telephone contact, the young man would deliver the drugs at an agreed location. The grandmother was aware of what was going on and even collaborated on some occasions in the sales. The sale of the drugs also took place from the family home which had been converted into a drugselling business equipped with all that was necessary for a thriving trade. The investigation into the family continued for four months and once the investigators had enough evidence they detained the three people and searched the family home. Inside they found more than 160 grams of marijuana already arranged in doses for sale. They also discovered several grams of cocaine, money and five mobile telephones that were used to contact clients. The grandmother and mother are now in custody awaiting trial whilst the young man, is currently the ward of the youth department of Alicante. Suzanne O’Connell

The Councillor for Health, Noelia Grao, has presented a new project entitled "Cafés Preventivos", which will run from now until Friday 28th September across the municipality of Orihuela, including the city centre, the Coast and Districts. The initiative is being rolled out in collaboration with hospitality establishments such as pubs, bars, cafeterias and restaurants and aims to tackle consumption in places where addictive behaviours are learned and substances supplied. Councillor Grao was accompanied by Abraham Fernández, coordinator of the project, who explained that “Cafés Preventivos offers informal debate with specialists in emotional intelligence and education for health or prevention of addictive behaviours". The first debate took place last week at "Alameda del Mar Civic Centre Cafeteria" it continued on Saturday 15th at "Oasis" in San Bartolomé at 6:30pm and the first meeting of this week will take place on 18th September at Cafeteria Concierto in Playa Flamenca where the meeting will be bilingual – in Englissh – from 6:30pm. On Wednesday 19th September the meeting will be held at Cafeteria CDM Orihuela Costa and "Valentina Café" at 6:30pm . The programme continues on 20th September at "Capri Cafeteria" in La Murada at 5:30pm and at "La Pepa Café" at 6:30pm. The programme returns to the Coast on 25th September at "The Abbey

Tavern" at 6:30pm and heads to the city on Thursday 27th to be held on the Terrace of "Hotel Tudemir" and finally, on 28th September the campaign concludes on the Terrace of "Las Nanas de la Cebolla" from 6:30pm. Among the experts who will participate in the talks are David Bisetto (Doctor in Psychology and Health Psychologist), María del Carmen Díez (Professor at the CEU Cardenal Herrera University), Abraham Fernández (Social Educator and Pedagogue) and Cristina Andújar (Social Educator). One of the main objectives of the campaign is "to emphasise the importance of the emotional factor in the use or abuse of addictions in young people and the general population." So from the Department of Health, Noelia Grao has expressed her intention to "apply a pilot program, from an informal methodology, to raise awareness, advise and inform on emotional intelligence as a strategy of prevention in addictive behaviours and especially the new forms of addiction". For his part, Abraham Fernandez wanted to thank the City Council and the establishment owners for their collaboration and highlighted that the idea of the project is also "to see how it works to bring news to the City Council, since Orihuela is a benchmark at the regional and even provincial levels for prevention in youngsters".

Ryanair cabin crew in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium and The Netherlands will be on strike on Friday 28th September – and other countries may be joining in too, according to Spanish airline employees' unions USO and SITCPLA. Early last week, a strike by Germanbased Ryanair staff, including pilots, led to 44 flights to and from Spain being cancelled. USO and SITCPLA say they are prepared to organise strikes as often as once a month if necessary unless and until the company agrees to negotiate. Poor working conditions and pay, a refusal to recognise unions and disciplinary threats against staff involved in these, and a refusal to comply with employment law in each country it is based in are some of the accusations against Ryanair made by its workers and unions across Europe. The low-cost carrier says it is 'confident' that the 'vast majority' of its cabin crew will continue to work as normal on 28th September, 'as has been the case during earlier industrial action', and to this end, 'disruption is expected to be minimal'. The industrial action has led to staff threatened with being fired and warnings that bases in affected airports will be closed if they continue, USO and SITCPLA claim. Both unions say this is effectively breaching employees' right to strike, which is enshrined in law.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The pound has found perhaps an unlikely ally in EU negotiator Michel Barnier. His optimism about the possibility of reaching a deal and positive outlook on plans coming from the UK helped to give sterling a boost at the beginning of the week. In contrast, the pound had little response to the slew of ecostats released this week. GDP beat forecast with a provisional 0.3% expansion in that single month and growth of 0.6% in the three months to July. Manufacturing output was down by 0.2% in July with the broader industrial production increasing by just 0.1%. The annual changes were 1.1% and 0.9% respectively. Jobseeker numbers increased by fewer than forecast and the rate of unemployment was unchanged and on target at 4.0%. Earnings both with and without bonuses increased by more than analysts had predicted: including bonuses they were up by an annual 2.6% while basic pay rose by 2.9%. Yet sterling was a net loser on the

day, falling by an average of 0.3% against the other ten most actively-traded currencies. There was a better news coming from the Bank of England, including Mark Carney’s confirmation that he would stay on until January 2020 to provide stability during the Brexit process. The BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee voted to hold firm with interest rates on at 0.75% but raised its growth forecast to 0.5% for the third-quarter, up from 0.4%. This gave the pound a slight boost, although as with the BoE forecast, it was tempered by the shadow cast by the uncertainty of Brexit. The ECB also announced their interest rates this week and kept the main rate at 0% as expected. However, the accompanying speech suggests that the euro will not be content waiting in the wings. Jean-Claude Juncker has called on the European Union to champion the euro as a global currency to rival the dollar and demanded more powers for Brussels to flex its muscles on the world stage.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) plays an important role in the food culture of many European nations, especially in France and Italy. Its esteemed reputation dates back to the earliest times and is reflected in its mythological traditions. Greek myths state that fennel was not only closely associated with Dionysus, the Greek god of food and wine, but that a fennel stalk carried the coal that passed down knowledge from the gods to men.

Planting Fennel is a sunshine lover, so pick a sunny

Description Fennel is composed of a white or pale green bulb from which closely superimposed stalks are arranged. The stalks are topped with feathery green leaves near which flowers grow and produce fennel seeds. The bulb, stalk, leaves and seeds are all edible. The fennel bulb is used like a vegetable and adds nuanced flavouring to all kinds of foods. Fennel belongs to the Umbellifereae family and is therefore closely related to parsley, carrots, dill and coriander. Fennel’s aromatic taste is unique, strikingly reminiscent of liquorice and anise, so much so that fennel is often mistakenly referred to as anise. Fennel’s texture is similar to that of celery, having a crunchy and striated texture.

Climate & Growing Conditions Fennel is an easy herb to grow for any beginner gardener and is generally problem-free. It thrives in hot, dry climates, but will grow in nearly all garden climates. Once the bulb has started growing, a few days of hot temperatures can cause it to bolt, or start producing seed instead of bulbs and stems, so good timing is the key. For growing fennel in warm climates, plant in autumn. For growing fennel in colder climates, plant in the spring. This herb is very forgiving when it comes to

soil pH, but grows best when the pH is between 6.0 and 7.0. Prepare the garden bed before planting by digging in compost and well-rotted manure. For success in growing this vegetable, make sure that its garden bed is well-drained. Fennel grows up to 5 feet (1.5 m) tall so consider the best location for them when planning to add fennel to your garden (you may wish to plant it at the back). Also, since it is a perennial, you will want to plant it in an area that is convenient for allowing it to stay in that gardening location. Fennel has a reputation for hindering other plants’ growth, so place your fennel patch in an isolated location. It typically does not do well with other vegetables and should never be planted close to dill as fennel and dill will cross-pollinate and in this case neither herb will be fit to eat. However, fennel does not have to be planted by itself. To add a splash of colour and add to culinary delights of fennel, consider planting mint, nasturtiums, and marigolds alongside the fennel.

location. Plant the seeds 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) deep and lightly cover with soil. It will take the seeds 10 to 14 days to geminate. Be sure to keep them moist until they germinate and watch that soil doesn’t dry out completely during hot spells. Once germination has occurred, start thinning the plants out so that there are about 12-20 inches (30-50 cm) separating each seedling. Check soil moisture often and water accordingly. Fennel does not like it soggy, but it also does not like it dry. Fennel can also be planted in a container. When planting in a container choose a large one and do not plant too many seeds.

How to Harvest Fennel is ready to harvest in stages. It needs about 70 days to produce a good size bulb, while young greens/fresh leaves can be picked anytime during the growing process. The seeds need to be harvested just before the seed heads turn completely brown. Simply place them in a paper bag and hang upside down in a cool, shady place. As the seeds dry, they will fall into the bag for collection. Fennel not only tastes good, but it is also a good way of attracting beneficial insects to the garden. These include, among many others, bees, ladybirds and butterflies. Fennel is a host plant for swallowtail butterflies, so do not kill the larvae you are sure to find munching on the leafy fronds. The leaves will grow back. Fennel is also known to repel fleas in the yard and can be found planted around many kennels due to this fact. There is no such thing as too much fennel in the garden…

Mainland Africa’s westernmost country occupies a colossal cut out of the Sahel. It ranges from the fringes of the Guinean woods to the bottom of the Sahara, and throws up fascinating destinations aplenty. Take the capital, Dakar: a town of pandemonius markets and endless energy. Or, look to the ports of Saint-Louis, which bustle with ships and Parisian-style arcades. Out in the wildernesses and Senegal has more treats for the traveler, ranging from the winding channels of the Gambia River to the shimmering beaches of the coast. Animals like hippos and hyenas all mingle here, while rustic communities continue to tick over. And the cherry on the top? Despite a dangerous Ebola outbreak, Senegal has been one of Africa’s most stable places for decades. Fair elections and peaceful power transfers all add up to make this one accessible and fun place for the worldly explorer. Dakar has seriously outgrown its perch on the Cap-Vert Peninsula. It now sprawls eastwards into the arid dust plains to the east, and bursts out over the dockside jetties in a medley of lively trader ships and fishscented marketplaces.

The port is what has driven the boom in both population and size, not to mention imbued the city with an enticing multiculturalism and energy. So, be sure to drop by the curious Soviet-esque rises of the African Renaissance Monument, the acclaimed Museum of African Arts, and the old Dutch slave trade ruins on Goree Island, before delving into the curious medley of Lebanese eateries African embroidery bazaars, roasted peanut stalls and raucous beer bars around wild Sandaga Market. ÎÎle de N'Gor: For a quick escape from the frenetic streets of Dakar, head to peaceful Île de N'Gor, a tiny island just off Dakar's north shore. It has a few calm beaches on the bay side, and some legendary surf on the northern coastline. Most visitors just come for the day, to relax on the beaches, stroll the sandy lanes of the village and have lunch in one of the waterside eateries, but there are several appealing guesthouses here as well. Musée Théodore Monod: The is one of Senegal's best museums. Exhibitions delve into African art and culture with over 9000 objects on display. Lively displays of masks and traditional dress from across the region (including Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Benin and Nigeria) give an excellent overview of styles without bombarding you with more than you can take in. Le Lagon: Perched on stilts over the bay, Le Lagon is one of Dakar's top seafood spots, with a spread of culinary treasures – oysters, sea urchins, chargrilled fish, pastas with mixed seafood. You can dine outside on the breezy waterside deck, or in the classy dining room, amid hanging swordfish, brass sailing instruments and a vintage diving suit.

Christmas “do” with a difference

E

ach year local businesses, social groups, charities and clubs wrack their brains as to what to do for the annual Christmas get together. Should it be a lunch or evening meal, a big party night or just a few drinks and should you join others in an organised ‘do’ or just arrange your own. Well this year why not try something completely different and book a wine tour. The ‘Wine Tasting with a Difference´ tours are running throughout the winter and the lead up to the Christmas holidays. The tour is enjoyable and entertaining, the food and wine is gorgeous and of the highest quality and the dedicated coach means that no-one has to drive so everyone can relax and enjoy the day out. Organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo, the wine tours are the perfect way to discover the wider region as well as sampling the delights of one of the most prestigious bodegas in the area. Begona has been hosting trips and tours for several years, including the ever-popular wine tasting tour of Bodega Florentino Perez in La Mancha where hundreds of people have enjoyed a taste of ‘real Spain’. Places for these Christmas Party

trips are expected to get booked quickly so please call Begona on 622 188 772 to book your group or friends or colleagues and arrange a pick up location. The vineyard and wine tasting tours take place at Bodega Florentino Perez in La Mancha and they are day-trips like no other – and at just 25 euros per person are excellent value for money. The Winery Located in La Finca ‘El Cercao’ and nestled among its 18 hectares of vineyards and surrounded by a totally natural environment, the Bodega Don Florentino is located between vineyards, with a large garden and outdoor patio in front of the impressive main facade. The tour will begin with a typical Spanish breakfast en route and before the afternoon winery tour the group will head to Chinchilla for a morning tour of this picturesque village courtesy of an official local guide. You will discover the hidden gems nestled in this beautiful location before heading to the bodega. The group will then begin its extensive guided tour of the vineyard and wine producing facilities. The tour will cover all aspects of wine

production from the type of grape, how it is grown, nurtured and harvested to the wine making process and storage. The group will then experience an eat-all-you-can traditional fivecourse lunch of typical Spanish fayre, accompanied by wines of the bodega. There is then the opportunity to visit the official bodega store and buy any of the wines produced. Due to the interest generated by these trips, Begona has created an email group to keep everyone informed on new dates, tour information such as pick-up locations, travel times and also on longer trips organised as part of her ‘Discover the Real Spain’ programme. Bookings for tours can also be made on-line through this group. If you would like to be added, please send your email address to: viajesrealspain@gmail.com

Children from the Ukraine enjoy Torrevieja Children from families caught up in conflict in the Ukraine have been enjoying a two week holiday in Torrevieja. The thirteen children come from the region of Donbas which is in the East of the Ukraine and are between 3 and 11 years old. They spent the first two weeks of August away from the conflict thanks to the organisations Global Christian Support and the Rotary Club of Torrevieja and have been staying in a camp in Moratalla during their two week break. During their time here they have had opportunity to enjoy themselves and have had different activities arranged for

them. These have included visiting Elche Safari park and eating meals at different

restaurants and cafes. They have also been provided with a number of items donated by different businesses in the town. Gifts include spectacles, clothes, footwear and toys which were requested as part of a campaign and were collected in the Madrid Hotel. The children were also given Costa Blanca t-shirts, hats and towels. It is hoped that the opportunity to spend a couple of weeks away, as well as the gifts they’ve been given, will provide some good memories and help ease the traumas they have experienced in their home country. Spanish health minister quits over ‘degree-gate’

Spanish Health Minister Carmen Montón was forced to quit recently after mounting irregularities emerged regarding a master’s degree she had studied for at Madrid’s King Juan Carlos University (URJC) in 2011. The institution has been at the centre of a series of scandals, which have involved current Popular Party (PP) leader Pablo Casado, and former Madrid regional premier Cristina Cifuentes, also of the PP. The latter was also forced to step down over her master’s degree, among other matters. A story published earlier last week by Spanish online newspaper eldiario.es revealed that Montón’s grades had been altered in the university’s online system. Montón did not pass all parts of the masters’ course in June 2011, which is when she should have finished her studies. According to her student records, at least one part of the coursework was marked as “not submitted.” On 25th November, 2011, “someone entered the IT system” of the URJC and changed “not submitted” to a “pass,” despite the fact that the administrative procedures for the course had been closed, according to eldiario.es. This alleged modification of the grades outside of the deadline would explain why Montón’s official certificate states that she completed the course in 2012. The minister had stated that she handed over her final thesis on gender studies in June 2011, something that would have been irregular since at the time she had not completed all of the coursework – an essential requisite. As the story broke Montón insisted that she had not done anything wrong, voicing the same arguments used by Cifuentes and Casado over their suspect master’s degrees – i.e. that they had done everything they had been told to by the university. PSOE Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had, until last night, backed the minister. But the revelation that her final thesis contained sections that had been plagiarized was the final straw.

The work is entitled “Assisted reproduction. A liberation or a setback in equality,” and is 55 pages long. And it is alleged that whole pages and paragraphs are copied from other theses and articles that are freely available on the internet – even containing texts lifted from Wikipedia. For example, practically the entire first chapter is the same as an article entitled “New identity,” written by Mexican Mónica Pérez, in an article dated 26th July, 2004. The episode is an embarrassing one for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who came to power earlier this year after ousting PP Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in a vote of no confidence, precisely due to the corruption scandals that were plaguing the party. “I have been transparent and honest,” Montón told the press last night after announcing her resignation. “I have not committed any irregularity.” She went on to praise Sánchez, and stated that she was quitting so as not to cause him damage. She also highlighted the work that she had done as health minister in the first 100 days of the Sánchez government. “We have brought back universal healthcare. We have laid the foundation for the approval of a law for protection against childhood violence. This is a good result for the first 100 days,” she stated. Montón will be replaced by María Luisa Carcedo, who was until now the high commissioner against child poverty. Montón is the second minister to have to quit in the first 100 days of the Sánchez administration. Culture and Sports Minister Màxim Huerta resigned in June after just a week on the job, after the media reported that he withheld taxes in the early 2000s and was recently forced to pay €365,000 in back taxes, late fees and fines.

More degree-gate In late April, Cristina Cifuentes of the Popular Party (PP) was forced to step down due to irregularities in connection with a master's degree that she obtained in 2012 from King Juan Carlos University. That case has led to a criminal investigation into forgery of public documents by officials at the public university. And the current leader of the PP, Pablo Casado, is under fire for a similar degree obtained from the same institution in 2009. So far he has refused to hand over his final dissertation, and has stated that he will not resign even if the Supreme Court, which is investigating the case, decides to charge him.

British man arrested for murder in Gibraltar A Brit has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a young man fell to his death from a balcony in Gibraltar. The unnamed 43 year old, who is a resident of the Rock, was cuffed after Aaron Michael Buckley, 25, fell to his death at around 3am. Buckley died upon impact after falling ‘from an upper balcony’ at Eurotowers, a Royal Gibraltar Police statement said. In an appeal for more witnesses, it said: “This investigation is now a murder enquiry, and detectives have arrested a 43yr old British man

resident in Gibraltar on suspicion of murder. “No other persons are being sought in connection with this investigation.” It added: “Our witness appeal issued this morning continues, and police are keen to speak to anyone: “Who may have witnessed the incident. Residing in the area of Eurotowers who may have seen or heard anything at the time of the incident or just prior to or after the incident. Who may have been passing by the area of Eurotowers, either at the time of the incident or just prior of after the incident.”

Take an objectivity tour of your home, or ask your agent’s honest advice. I can’t tell you how many times personal flair sidetracks the flow of seeing a home and the flair – not your home – becomes the topic of discussion as we drive away. Consider carefully: Is this something you would see in a new construction model home? Always refer to this question when in doubt. Would that model home have a strong scent or odour? Would the kids’ room have crazy posters? Graffiti on the walls? Day-glow paint? If this is a model home, would there be boudoir photos in the bedroom? Weapons on display?

N

o one wants to be reminded of messy life situations like a divorce, and it certainly won’t help your selling position if you’re the seller of a home. Make sure you keep all emotional garbage out of sight. Keep papers, boxes, arguments, distress, medications, your divorced-but-looking dating site application (just kidding), and anything else that says “I’m desperate to sell” well hidden. Clues like scarce furnishings, and not making simple, obvious repairs all “say” something about motivation. Try to keep your personal life personal. Minimize you and maximize the home. De-personalize the home and shoot for it looking like a model home – modern, bright and light without over embellished personal mementos or lingering cooking odours. Keep the environment in your home neutral. Think romance – lighting that’s inviting, ambience that’s soothing, music that will usher them calmly from room to room, and fragrances that are fresh and not overpowering. You want them to stay and enjoy your environment. Think it doesn’t matter? It does! I can’t tell you the countless times while touring property that the buyer brings to my attention the fact that there’s only women’s clothing in the wardrobe or that the house looks abandoned from the street, or that there’s no food in the fridge. Always know that when you are selling your home and buyers are looking around to see if this house suits them, they will stumble across giveaway clues unless you stage your home correctly. Minimize you and maximize the home. Begin de-personalizing right after listing your property for sale. Immediately begin to remove extra photographs or anything that may be politically incorrect or offensive.

Be aware of your daily environment. Keep things locked up, in the safe, jewelry box, or stored while your home is on the market. Clearly understand that buyers do not want to know you and be your friend and, usually, are looking to knock some off the price. It isn’t important for them to know how the people who lived there live. Seeing many portraits and personal items could very well cause emotions of envy, jealousy, or entitlement, which could lead them away from choosing your home and cause them to believe you don’t deserve top Euro. Selling your home? Enjoy the journey! For more information and guidance on buying and selling, please contact us and we will send you our FREE e-book or log on to: www.homes4u.esto request the link. 'Stolen baby' meets Mum for the first time A woman aged 45 who was 'stolen' as a newborn has met her real mother for the first time – and discovered they were only living a province apart since her alleged 'death' at a few hours' old. Ana Belén Pintada was one of the suspected tens of thousands of infants traded in illegal adoption scandals that started in around the 1960s, during General Franco's dictatorship, and may have been ongoing until as recently as the 1990s. Typically, victims were mothers who gave birth in what used to be called 'nursing homes' and were nearly all run by the Catholic Church and staffed by nuns, and tended to be either povertystricken, unmarried, or else dissenters of Franco's régime. A few, especially those giving birth out of wedlock, were told to their faces that they were 'whores' and their children had been given to 'decent' families, but the vast majority were told their babies had died shortly after coming into the world –

and some were even given coffins filled with stones or sand. Many – although not all – of the adopting families had no idea of the truth about their new babies, as they were often told the mothers had died in childbirth or had given away the babies because they were the result of an affair or practising prostitution. Ana Belén grew up in Campo de Criptana, Ciudad Real province, believing herself to be an only child – but just months ago, discovered she was adopted and then realised she was one of the 'stolen babies'. She became suspicious when dealing with her father's affairs after his death in 2010, but the fact she was adopted was not confirmed until after her mother died in 2014. According to Ana Belén, she found a birth certificate in 2016 when selling her late mother's house, with parts of it cut out, and another medical certificate showing her mother was infertile.

Asked by the Campo de Criptana Info tourism and information site how she now felt about her deceased adoptive parents, Ana Belén says she does not bear a grudge, but has lots of unanswered questions she wishes she could have asked them in life to help her understand why they accepted a baby 'wrenched from her mother's arms' and 'how they could do that to another parent'. “My adoptive parents knew what they were doing,” she reveals. “I'd like to be able to ask them to explain themselves: how they could be so in need of 'stealing' a baby when there were legal ways of acquiring one. How they could have lived with this in silence. They gave me everything I needed and more, but this...in my head and heart, I can't figure out how the people I knew as my parents could have been capable of tearing a newborn baby from her mother's arms,” Ana Belén wonders. It was only in early 2018 that she found

out she was a 'stolen baby' and launched a media appeal. Pilar V.G., 69, originally from Lanzahíta (Ávila province, Castilla y León) but living in the Greater Madrid region, said that when she gave birth on July 10, 1973 at the Santa Cristina Clinic in the capital, the baby was placed in her arms and then taken away for washing but, hours later, she awoke from being sedated to be told by her husband that their infant had died. It was Pilar's husband who had been told the 'tragic' news and left to break it to his wife.

Out of the blue Until a few weeks ago, Pilar had never questioned her loss – then she received a call out of the blue from a woman claiming to be her daughter. Ana Belén said an anonymous person had rung her, saying she knew her real mother and giving her telephone number. A nervous Ana Belén called Pilar, who was so flustered she hung up on her. But shortly

Anabel Pintada

afterwards, Pilar rang back and asked Ana Belén to get all the evidence she could that might show they were related. The younger woman contacted the national Children's Institute and, armed with proof, arranged to meet Pilar in Aranjuez, Greater Madrid, halfway between their two homes. Pilar immediately noticed the 'striking' physical resemblance both with herself and with her other two children and her husband, all of whom are still alive. Ana Belén has not yet met her biological father or her siblings, but is looking forward to doing so and to making up for lost time with her family of birth. She says she is very grateful to her lawyer and all other parties involved who helped her to trace them.

Brit dies from cocaine overdose on flight to Spain A British passenger's death from a cocaine overdose forced a Jet2 flight from Manchester to Ibiza make an emergency landing in Toulouse, southwestern France, according to the airline. Reports released in the Spanish media reveal that the deceased, said to be in his early 30s, was seen trembling violently in his seat, then began 'acting strangely' and visiting the toilet several times. During the flight from Manchester last weekend, the traveller was spotted pouring a white powdery substance into a vodka and coca-cola. Neighbouring passengers said afterwards: “He was definitely taking drugs. “When the cabin crew shut the toilets to stop him, he poured all he had left into his drink.” Flight attendants apparently ran to his seat to put his oxygen mask on and had a defibrillator at the ready.

At one point, he was laid out on the floor in the aisle and two 'amazingly brave' female passengers performed CPR on him for 20 minutes, 'reacting so quickly' that other travellers believed they may have been off-duty medical professionals. Even after the aircraft had started its descent into Toulouse, one of the women was still giving the man cardiac massage and mouth-tomouth, despite cabin crew telling her to return to her seat and put her belt on for landing. A spokeswoman from the British foreign office said her department was 'in contact' with French authorities 'following the death of a British national in Toulouse' as well as providing support for his family 'at this difficult time'. It is not known how long the flight was delayed before taking off again for Ibiza.

Spain third worst in Europe for cancer-causing oil refineries Spain has been revealed to be one of Europe’s main contributors to the toxic’ crude oil refining industry. According to a new study by Global Data, Spain, Germany and Italy account for more than 35 percent of the active refineries across the continent. Spain is the third highest user of such refineries, with a capacity of 1,542,000 BPD (barrels per day) from 10 refineries in 2017. Gibraltar-San Roque, operated by Compania Espanola de Petroleos SAU, has the highest active capacity of 241,000 BPD. Cartagena and Bilbao refineries follow with 220,000 BPD each. Years of research have linked living close to refineries with higher cancer rates. It is believed toxic pollutants emitted in the refinery process - like benzene contribute to various types of cancer. In the Cadiz region, the prevalence of cancers and rate of mortality were recently revealed to be among the worst in Spain. The allergic asthma rate amongst children is the highest in the country while the overall mortality rate is 20 percent above the national average. According to a CEPSA report, a string

Softer sentences for online hate crimes Spain’s attorney general is proposing a change to the country’s criminal code so that hate crimes committed via social networks are no longer only punishable by jail sentences. In recent years there have been a number of high-profile court cases where people have been handed prison terms for having posted racist, homophobic or anti-Semitic messages on social networks such as Twitter, prompting a widespread debate about the limits of freedom of speech under Spanish law. The proposal from attorney general María José Segarra would see prison sentences for such cases reduced, as well as the inclusion of alternative measures imposed by a judge in situations where, “due to the context, lack of repetition or personal characteristics or circumstances of the author,” such harsh punishment is not appropriate. The article in question of the criminal code lays out jail terms of up to four years for anyone who publicly incites hatred for reasons of gender, race, religion or other circumstances. In cases where the offence

has been committed via social media or on the internet, the minimum sentence is 30 months. Sentences of two years and under are almost always suspended in Spain in the case of first-time offenders. The attorney general believes that the current legislation is too severe and disproportionate. “Experience shows that many of these cases are committed by people who do not belong to criminal groups or organisations, but rather post messages on social networks that are deeply offensive or humiliating for certain collectives of people for xenophobic, religious, homophobic or other reasons, and may have acted impulsively or recklessly,” the proposal reads. The attorney general adds that many of the authors of such offenses are prepared to admit the facts once they have been identified by the police, but that given the current seriousness of the sentencing guidelines, it is not possible for prosecutors and defendants to negotiate an admission of guilt and avoid trial. Alternatives proposed by the attorney general include fines, a loss of political

rights, or community work related to the offense committed, and that would allow for “social reinsertion via getting to know and accepting their victims.” The attorney general cited examples like making authors of anti-semitic remarks visit a Holocaust memorial or work in organisations or collectives that represent victims. Freedom of speech A number of cases related to freedom of speech - although not all involving hate crimes - have hit the Spanish headlines in recent years. In a high-profile case in 2015, a short-lived Madrid city councilor, Guillermo Zapata, was taken to court over offensive jokes he had published on Twitter four years previously. Zapata was forced to quit his job and the case was eventually shelved by a judge. Spanish rapper Josep Miquel Arenas, known by his artistic name Valtonyc, recently fled Spain to avoid a three-anda-half-year prison term for glorifying terrorism and insulting the Crown in a series of song lyrics.

SPAIN WORKING ON SUICIDE PREVENTION PLAN Spain’s Health Ministry is launching a suicide-prevention strategy based on early detection and communication, in a bid to address a taboo problem that causes twice as many deaths as car accidents. Health Minister Carmen Montón held a meeting with health professionals and associations to collect information aimed at launching a prevention plan against suicide, which is behind the deaths of between 3,500 and 4,000 people a year in Spain, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). A further 8,000 people require hospital treatment after failed attempts to take their own lives. The ministry uses comparisons to illustrate the scope of the problem: there are 65 suicides for every death from gender violence, 11 for every homicide, and two for every road fatality. Yet there is no specific prevention policy in place, nor does the issue attract much media attention. The suicide rate in Spain is 8.7 for every 100,000 inhabitants, while the global estimate is around 12 per 100,000, even

though cases are believed to be underreported. In Europe, the latest figure talks about 11.4 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) asked governments to work to bring this rate down to 10 per 100,000 by the year 2020. In 2014 the WHO demanded specific plans, but only around 30 countries have so far produced them, said the international agency. In Spain, the suicide rate has remained stable for years, representing around 0.1 percent of annual deaths. By comparison, death rates from causes such as cancer, drugs and road accidents have been significantly reduced. Specialists and support groups say that prevention is possible. In Finland, the suicide rate has dropped from 13 per 100,000 to 10 per 100,000 in a decade, said Andoni Aseán, president of the Spanish Suicidology Association. The meeting will help the Spanish Health Ministry draft a plan that has a precedent in a regional suicide prevention program set up by Minister Montón

in Valencia in 2017 when she was the regional health chief there. The ministry will propose that other regions adopt a similar strategy. The Valencia region has been running ads on buses, and health professionals have been instructed to ask questions that could help detect people with suicidal thoughts. The next step involves getting those cases to a specialist as soon as possible – the protocol talks about 72 hours, although this is not always the case. According to Juan José Carballo, a psychiatrist at Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid, 50% of young people who attempted suicide had never been to see a mental health specialist. Suicide, which is closely linked to depression, psychosis, addictions, personality disorders and bullying at school, has been under-reported, partly out of fear of a contagion effect. The WHO has warned about this possibility. But experts gathered at a Madrid congress of the Spanish Suicidology Association said that it’s not about avoiding suicide stories, it’s about reporting on them well. And this

means not going into personal details, and above all not disclosing the method used by the victim. “It’s tough to go through and it’s tough to talk about it, but we need to talk about this problem so it will get included in the political agenda and attract resources,” said one victim’s mother. Age range Although most people who take their own lives in Spain are older (917 who were 70 and over in 2016, according to INE), there were also 12 deaths among children under 15 years of age that same year, and 247 who were under 30. There has been a surge in support groups in recent years: Después del Suicidio, Alaia, Besarkada, Apsas, Justa

Alegría, Biziraun. They are all run by relatives of people who killed themselves and who want to prevent the same thing from happening to others. All of them say that there are signs that make prevention possible, although “our son only gave signs for one day,” notes Agustín Ezquizia. “It feels good to get together with others. At first we were very much alone,” adds his wife. José Manuel Gómez Soriano, a researcher from Alicante University, has developed a program named Life! that analyses people’s written texts to detect signs of sadness, concern and other markers. If the program finds enough signs, a professional is alerted who then gets in touch with the potential suicide victim with the hope of prevention.

BARCELONA RALLY Around one million people rallied in Barcelona recently, banging drums and blowing whistles in a show of support for Catalan independence nearly a year after a failed attempt to break away from Spain. Wearing coral-red T-shirts and waving the red, yellow and blue Catalan separatist flag, a sea of protesters gathered for the rally on Catalonia’s “national day” which commemorates Barcelona’s fall to troops loyal to Spain’s King Philip V in 1714. The annual “Diada” holiday has since 2012 been used to stage a massive rally calling for secession for the wealthy northeastern region that has its own distinct language. But this year’s event had particular significance as a test of strength after a referendum last October 1 deemed illegal by the courts, and the Catalan parliament’s unilateral declaration of independence on October 27, all came to naught. Demonstrators climbed on each other’s shoulders to form human towers, a Catalan tradition, while others carried yellow and black signs that read “Free Catalan political prisoners now”, a refer-

ence to Catalan separatist leaders in jail awaiting trial over last year’s independence bid. “We are demanding our right to be a nation, in a democratic and peaceful way,” Roger Pujol, a 37-year-old olive oil producer, told Spanish news agency AFP. At the start of the rally demonstrators knocked down a symbolic wall decorated with separatist symbols, a metaphor for the power of the people to overcome obstacles and achieve independence. City police said on Twitter that around one million people took part, a similar amount to last year’s protest. Organisers said they had sold more than 200,000 coral-red T-shirts - the colour used in the ties used to secure the ballot boxes during last year’s contested referendum. “We are starting an endless march,” Catalan president Quim Torra told reporters at the end of the rally. Further protests are planned for an anniversary of last year’s banned referendum, which was marred by police violence, and on the anniversary of the

failed declaration of independence. In a televised address before the rally, Torra said his government was committed to implementing the republic Catalans voted for in the referendum. But Oriol Bartomeus, politics professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, said that “listening to the speeches of the separatist leaders, it seems like there is no plan.” Opposition parties complain that separatists have transformed the “Diada” into a holiday which excludes the half of the Catalan population that does not favour independence. “We Catalans should celebrate our national day and not just a call for independence that is shared by less than half of the population,” Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrel, who is Catalan, said in Strasbourg. A closely-watched Catalan government poll in July showed 46.7 percent of Catalans want an independent state, just ahead of 44.9 percent who were opposed. Separatist parties won a slim majority of seats in the Catalan parliament in a

December election, even though they captured just 47.5 percent of the popular vote. But there are growing divisions in separatist ranks between those who want to provoke a clash with Madrid and those seeking a more conciliatory approach. “If a separatist is so naive or stupid to believe he can impose independence on the 50 percent of Catalans who are not (separatists), it’s clear that they are mistaken,” Joan Tarda, a lawmaker for separatist party ERC in the Spanish parliament, said last week. Softly, softly The ERC has a taken softer approach than its ally in the regional government - former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont’s Together for Catalonia. Puigdemont was sacked by Madrid after last year’s independence declaration and fled to

Belgium. Spain’s conservative prime minister Mariano Rajoy then imposed direct rule on Catalonia and called early elections. Rajoy’s successor, socialist Pedro Sanchez, was catapulted to power in June with the support of separatist parties. He has offered the region a referendum on greater autonomy, but this was rejected by Torra, who insists Madrid must allow a legally binding independence referendum for Catalonia’s 7.5 million people. “One of Catalonia’s main problems is coexistence, not independence. We must encourage dialogue amongst Catalans,” Sanchez wrote on Twitter on the day of the rally. But Catalan parliament speaker Roger Torrent said “no credible dialogue is possible if those who must negotiate are in prison.”

Young boy saves mum’s life by calling 112 A four-year-old boy saved his mother’s life - and impressed paramedics at the same time – by calling the 112 emergency services hotline and giving enough detail to allow the ambulance crew to arrive swiftly and prepared for the situation. The little boy made the call and told operators his mum was not very well and was able to give his full address when asked. The fully trained operator asked him if he was able to reach the door handle to let them in when they got there, and he said yes. He even put the phone to his mother’s ear so they could hear her and get an idea of what was wrong with her. She had collapsed on the floor, unable to move and was in a confused and delirious state. It turns out the mother has a chronic medical condition, the nature of which has not been revealed. Meanwhile, her son picked up his four-week-old

baby sister and comforted her as she was crying. In the post-call suggestions, the mother said staff ought to have kept her son on the phone for longer to distract him, given that he rang them back up to 10 times to ask if the ambulance was coming. The 112 staff said they would take note, and praised the family for teaching their child how to deal with an emergency at such a young age. Paramedics reached the house - in an undisclosed village of 7,000 inhabitants in Castilla y León - without incident, thanks to the little boy’s accurately giving the call centre staff his address, and he let them in himself. His mother was taken to hospital, but discharged shortly afterwards. Emergency staff say they were extremely impressed with the child’s actions and said he remained completely calm throughout.

World’s top-three restaurant ‘pops up’ in Madrid The world’s third-best restaurant is set to open a popup version at a Madrid hotel this autumn, offering an identical menu to that of its main base. Mirazur, run by celebrity chef Mauro Colagreco and based on France’s chic Côte d'Azure, will be whipping up its most famous dishes at the NH Collection Eurobuilding hotel from 12th November to 2nd December inclusive. Given its top-three global rating, Mirazur’s prices are beyond those of mere daily sustenance - at €210 for the chef’s taster menu, rising to €300 with specially-selected wines for each course - but are not necessarily excessive for one-off special occasions when taking into account the quality of the dishes and ingredients. Describing its wares as French and border cuisine and using fresh, locally-produced ingredients, Mirazur is likely to be a magnet for foodies during its month in the Spanish capital. Its decision to open a pop-up outside its national

territory is one that is growing fast at the top end of the gourmet dining industry and has been fully embraced by the Spanish NH Hotels chain. The company’s #InResidence scheme aims to bring some of the best eateries on the planet to Spain’s capital, and has already done so with Grant Achatz’s Alinea restaurant and a series of Spanish celebrity chefs. These, in recent months, have included Nacho Manzano, owner and founder of the two-Michelin-starred Restaurante Casa Marcial. Chef patron Mauro Colagreco headed to France in 2001 as a newly qualified chef, working with Bernard Loiseau until his death in 2003. He then worked with 50 Best regulars Alain Passard at Arpège and Alain Ducasse at Hotel Plaza Athénée before spending a year at Le Grand Véfour. In 2006, he established Mirazur, earning his first Michelin star within a year and a second in 2012.

British man shot dead by police in Estepona

Officers from Spain’s National Police force shot a British man dead in Estepona, Málaga, last Monday evening. The man, who had a criminal record for drug trafficking and weapons possession, reportedly fired shots at the authorities as he was being detained. The incident began on Monday morning, when a number of witnesses called the emergency services to report that an individual had been in a traffic accident near Puerto Banús, in Marbella. According to witnesses, the man involved was carrying a firearm when he emerged from the crashed vehicle. Rather than waiting for help, he fled the scene of the accident. The local police managed to determine the identity of the suspect, leading them to a hotel in Estepona. When officers tried to detain the individual,

he fired his weapon at them, prompting them to respond in kind. Emergency crews were called to the scene, but were unable to save the life of the British man. The man was subsequently found to be in possession of two firearms and four magazines of bullets. Police sources did not confirm whether any officers had been injured in the shooting. This incident marks the second shooting death in Estepona in less than a month. On 20th August, a 34-year-old Spanish man was killed by a hooded assailant, who later fled the scene on a bicycle. The shooting happened in the early hours of the morning, in a residential estate in the east of the municipality. The victim was about to enter his home when he was killed.

Summer tourism stats I gave up everything for him

I want to retire

My boyfriend has been working in the Middle East for 10 years. We don't live together, but he is away for a month each time, and then for one month he returns home. I discovered he had a second mobile. He hid it well, but I went hunting because I suspected something. He tried to deny it at first but then admitted that he has another woman, and a 9 year old child! Now he says he will move permanently abroad. I gave up a lot for him when a lot of my family and friends warned me against him; I guess they were right.

My wife and I married late in life and have two young adult children. I should have retired from work two years ago. However the kids were younger and are even now still dependent on us. Now my employers have suggested I leave this year at 67 years of age, and I really do want to go. However, if I do this, the lifestyle the kids are used to will no longer be available to them. I am so tired though.

Presumably this other woman did not know about you either? You are hurt now, and it will take a long time to get over the betrayal, but you know in your heart that you are better off without this man. It will be easier for you that he is in another country, so that you won’t have to see him again. Nurse your wounds for a while, and then look for some strength inside you to carry on with your life and find happiness again with someone more deserving.

I assume you will be worse off financially when you retire. If your children don’t understand why life cannot be the same as before, you must sit them down, get your accounts out, and show them exactly how much money goes out of the house in terms of costs, and how much will now be coming in, in terms of your reduced income. Sacrifices will have to be made, and they should help towards running the household by working themselves and paying for their keep. If they want the luxuries they have been used to, they will have to pay for them themselves - it‘s as simple as that.

The Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez, has being taking stock of the summer visitors across Orihuela. The Councillor stressed that visits and inquiries to the Tourist Offices of Orihuela by foreign tourists "have grown by 35 percent during this summer period." "It is important to get people who come to our beaches, which represent 101 different nationalities, to also come to Orihuela so they can get to know our history, to be interested in knowing where and who we are through our monuments and lifestyle," said Sofia Álvarez. The majority of tourists come from the United Kingdom, France and Belgium, with the Belgian tourist market seeing the most growth. There has also been a ‘great influx of Russian and Scandinavian people over the last few years, which has been maintained." The data showing the number of visits by national residents is also positive and the council has calculated an increase of 6.56 percent, with the Valencian Community and Madrid as the leading places of origin. Hotel occupancy in downtown Orihuela has grown by 5 percent, according to the survey conducted by the Department of Tourism among the hotel owners themselves. On the coast, hotel figures maintain the same level as last year, although, as reported by the

Councillor, has reached the "95 percent occupancy rate in tourist apartments, both those of individuals associated with holiday rentals and in the aparthotels ". Guided Routes and Theatrical Walks Tourism has offered during the months of July and August a series of guided walks and dramatised tours, mostly in the historic centre of the city, "in order to de-seasonalise tourism and bring tourists from the beaches to the city to discover our rich heritage and monuments, " said, Sophia Álvarez. The councillor confirmed the success and popularity of these activities and commented that "more than a thousand people have taken part in them". This has proven to be an excellent way to communicate the value

of our traditions, our heritage and our history". Councillor Álvarez thanked the Provincial Council of Alicante, which has subsidised 50 percent of the expenses generated by the theatrical tours, for its support. These tours will continue during September, taking place every Saturday of the month and anyone who want to take part can make a reservation at the Tourist Office of Orihuela (based in the city centre) or by calling 96 530 46 45. With regard to tourism and new technologies, the Councillor was keen to point out that the Department of Tourism's commitment to social networks and the web has paid off. She said: "Orihuela Turística's website has experienced an increase of 6 percent in visits, with more than 10,000 new visitors to the site."

Sofia Alvarez, Councillor for Tourism.

Coffin housing A company in Spain has been blasted for offering ‘coffin’ housing for lowincome workers to live in from €200 per month. The move has been met with uproar after the company revealed plans to rent out tiny pods to low-income workers. The company, based in Barcelona, says its Haibu (beehive in Japanese) project is a solution to the soaring rent

prices in the Catalan capital. But it will not see the light of day after Barcelona town hall refused to issue a building licence, saying the miniature accommodation is ‘unfit for humans’. “Fortunately piling up people is prohibited. The law does not allow this type of dwelling,” Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, a former housing and antieviction activist, said.

But Haibu 4.0 has already started building the first eight pods despite not having permission, and it expects they will be finished by the end of September at an empty business premises. Each 2.4 square metre pod comes complete with a bed, TV, storage space and power plugs. The tight accommodation is a popular option for tourists in Japan. The project will include a communal area with a kitchen, lounge and bathrooms, and the monthly rent would include utility bills and wifi. Haibu housing is restricted to those aged between 25 and 45 years of age and who have a minimum salary of €450 a month. The company claims five hundred people have already shown interest in renting a pod. “We are based on the idea that a group of people who can’t have access to housing can band together and move ahead,” Victoria Cerdan, one of the entrepreneurs behind Haibu 4.0, told Spanish news agency AFP. “Obviously it is not adequate housing. No one would want it for themselves. But no one wants a monthly salary of €500 and unfortunately they exist. Instead of living on the street, we offer this.” Inigo Errejon, a prominent lawmaker with Podemos blasted the idea, tweeting: “There are similar houses in cemeteries. They are called coffins.” Barcelona has seen the average rent for a flat soar 28.7 percent between 2014 and 2017 to €903.4.

Smell an apple to prevent claustrophobia An apple a day can do more than just keep the doctor away, it can also help with claustrophobia. Apparently smelling a green apple will relieve the stress associated with confined spaces, according to research from the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation. Margaret from Rojales asks: Hi Aunty. My friends are complaining as when they receive my emails it is in the text font style "Lucida Handwriting" which they find almost impossible to read, yet I have sent it out in "Comic Sans MS". This has only happened since I changed to Windows 10. I have deliberately not altered the text on this email, so that you can see my dilemma. Can you help please? Aunty Says: How odd Margaret. Your email shows up fine on my Windows laptop so I can only think that the devices that your friends are using to read your emails don’t know the font “Comic Sans MS” and therefore the device goes off and uses something similar. The MS at the end of “Comic Sans MS” stands for Microsoft, so if your friends are using a non Windows device (an Apple or Android phone or tablet for example) there’s a distinct possibility the font it replaces it with is "Lucida Handwriting". Maybe try a few other non MS fonts and see what happens. Vince via email asks: Can you help me with a “long running script” message on my laptop? I’m not 100% sure about this but probably the easiest thing would be to download Google’s Chrome browser. I think support & development for Internet Explorer has long been discontinued, so maybe there is some script running on the Yahoo page that cannot work with IE as it is too old.

Windows 10 I can no longer burn discs. It looks like everything is burning OK then when I look at the disc it is still empty. I have tried various options but always the same. I also downloaded Express Burn and again the same thing happened, it looked like it was burning but the disc remains blank. I never had any problems with Windows 7 and I Just want to burn some music tracks but it is becoming a life's work! Aunty Says: Hello David. Have you tried the built in Windows Media Player app? Type MEDIA PLAYER into the search box (by the Start button) and there is a “burn” button top right. Maybe try some different discs and also give the DVD drive lens a quick blow when the door is open. Apart from this, uninstalling and reinstalling the DVD drive drivers via device manager is the only thing I can think of. Let me know how you get on.

A DAY WITHOUT FATALITIES ON EUROPE’S ROADS? That’s the aim of Project EDWARD each year. Launched in 2016, the project is supported by drivers across the continent, plus very generous public and private sector partners. Project EDWARD, European Day Without A Road Death. In preparation for 2018’s day of action next week, Wednesday 19 September, we thought a little reintroduction of the idea was in order. The long-term aim of Project EDWARD is to spearhead significant and sustained reduction in death and serious injury on roads across the world. This is where you can join us in pledging to reduce risk and improve safety on your road journeys, not just on 19 September but every day! We have spent time reflecting on recent results which paint a very mixed picture of progress in reducing deaths and serious injuries on Europe’s roads. For the first few years of this decade, countries across the EU have been highly successful in pursuing the 2020 50% reduction target. But the arrival of a second successive year of disappointing news shows that this downward trend has stagnated. We need to speed up our efforts, and one initiative we believe can make a big impact is the European Day Without A Road Death – Project EDWARD for short. EDWARD will encourage all road users to

reflect on their behaviour and attitude. After all, driver behaviour remains the most important barrier to progress as we approach 2020 and its reduction targets. Drivers are unwittingly or sometimes knowingly putting other road users at risk in so many ways, perhaps by speeding, drink-driving, not wearing a seat belt, using the phone while driving, using vehicles they have not kept roadworthy, parking their cars on bicycle lanes, blocking pedestrian crossings, not turning on their lights or engaging in risky manoeuvres. But it’s not just drivers who are at fault. Many cyclists and pedestrians increase their risk levels by choosing to ignore the rules or look for risky short cuts. In the days leading up to the Project EDWARD day, we want all road users to think – even for a few short minutes – about the risks they face, the risks they may pose to others and how they can go about reducing those risks. TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, hope that no one should die on the roads of Europe on Wednesday 19 September. And as we pause to reflect on how we use the roads, we believe that Project EDWARD can make a significant contribution towards further sizeable and sustained reductions in road death and serious injury. So whether you represent a national government, a private organisation, a

public agency, a charity, a school, college or university, or whether you simply care as an individual, please join us and make the pledge to support Project EDWARD, and do your bit to reduce risk and improve safety for the people who use our roads. Project EDWARD is supported by all 30 TISPOL member countries, and a growing number of well-known brands and road safety organisations have pledged to work with TISPOL to promote the messages of EDWARD as far and wide as possible. We hope that, with support from colleagues and partners across Europe, Project EDWARD will be a highprofile way of reminding everyone that there is a great deal of hard work going on across Europe towards 2020 casualty reduction goals – and beyond that, too. We want everyone to feel part of this and to know that small actions lead to big improvements. Right now, you can visit the official site and make the pledge, projectedward.eu/pledge/, and if you represent any kind of group, from schools to pensioners, and everyone in between, perhaps you can also share the aim through your members and collectively get behind the project. Share your actions using #ProjectEDWARD on social media and get involved today as we are all responsible and can all do our bit to reduce the risk.

YOUR WEEK IN SPORT Uzbekistan which you would kind of hope they would, really. Mind you, they went into it without Sir Andy or Kyle Edmund so anything could have happened. The victory means they might be seeded or something in a new look Davis Cup that starts soon. No, I don’t know either.

of his last opening partner, Keaton Jennings. ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

It wasn’t just Cook breaking records in the final Test (he also moved into

Eliud Kipchoge smashed the world record for running a marathon on Sunday morning in Berlin. He knocked a whopping 78 seconds off which is pretty big. That said, of all the world records I’d love to hold, the marathon is way down the list primarily as it would involve actually running a marathon.

And, with a ton from Alastair Cook and a world record breaking wicket from Jimmy Anderson, England won the Test series against the side ranked Number One in the World 4-1. I mean, seriously. What a way for Alastair Cook to leave Test cricket. If he got to actually write the script himself, I doubt it would have been that good. 70 odd in the first innings and then 149 in the second knock made many England fans wish he would just change his mind about calling it a day. Cook has no intention of doing so and neither should he because the next retirement could not be as perfect as this. Cook scored a ton on debut for England what feels like an eternity ago, away in India having spent three days flying to the ground as an emergency replacement. Now it is England who need, in my opinion, at least two emergency opening replacements to fill the huge shoes of ‘Chef’ and the somewhat smaller ones

the 5th most Test runs of all time slot, which made him the highest run scorer of left-handers and opening bats in the same shot). James Anderson, who shared 111 Tests with Cook, became the world’s leading fast bowling wicket taker, moving ahead of Australia’s Glenn McGrath. This has led to talk of who the greatest English bowler ever might be, which for me is futile chat - just enjoy Anderson whilst we can and accept that it is nigh-on-impossible to compare eras. This Test series win over India has been amazing for both it’s drama and its ability to paper over the huge cracks in this current England Test XI. But, let’s just enjoy the moment before we worry about a tour to Sri Lanka. Joe Root, still for me a better option for vice than actually leading the side, is on a roll and his captaincy figures look a darn site better now than they did after Pakistan gave us a shock all that time ago at the start of the season.

Saturday was Vitality Blast Finals Day and despite the inherent risk of planning a day of cricket fiesta in the middle of September in England, the crowd were treated to a carnival of aggressive T20 cricket. Moeen Ali, who has had a fine backend to his summer, led Worcestershire to victory chasing down a Sussex total of 157 with nine balls to spare. Ben Cox hit the winning runs after Ali had got the side off to a good start Cox ending on 46 not out. Moeen is possibly the best English cricketer right now, so he had better be on the plane this winter.

umpire for a complete lack of consistency on penalty points, calling him a ‘thief’ and making it clear she would not have had the same penalty had she been a man. The accusation went viral, meaning that Naomi Osaka hardly got a look-in despite her phenomenal achievement in winning the tournament.

Finally, in the Singapore F1 Grand Prix, having smashed the lap record to take pole position Lewis Hamilton cantered to victory to extend his lead over Sebastian Vettel in the Driver’s Championship. Boy, have I missed giving you these thrilling F1 updates, I can assure you. Until next week.

In the Davis Cup, GB beat

Whilst all that cricket has been happening, there have been many other sports in action over the summer and I shall return to ‘reporting’ on some of them for you. I guess we should mention the tennis where Serena Williams left the US Open with all the headlines if not the title, which went to a 20-yearold from Japan who has barely had a mention since. You see, Williams (rightly) called out the

Valencian Rally Championship New Commodore

September will see the 4th Rally Xixona as part of the Valencian Rally Championship. It starts on the 21st with an evening stage which begins with the ceremonial start in Xixona and covers 6.6kms ending in Berlubia. A short stage, but combine the winding roads with the element of darkness and it becomes quite a challenge. The second and most gruelling day will have competitors driving for almost 12 hours in total, and covering nearly 393kms including the challenging section “Monnegre”, which has hair-pin bends, climbs and descents. Entrants range from National level R5, F2000 & group N to Historic Legend Speed and Regularity Speed Control rally. This year, alongside the famous Spanish Goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares, and time served veterans such as Pepe Santamaria and Gareth Turgoose, Andrew and Amanda Stephenson of Car Broker Spain, Benijofar, will be making their debut in a 1995 Subaru Impreza 555 group A replica. It has taken Car Broker Spain and their team 18 months to prepare the car themselves, and whilst being under no illusion of making any great impact on the Spanish

national rally scene, they are very excited to be making a dream come true. Andy and Mandy would like to thank all of their sponsors and friends for their valuable support and enthusiasm. If you would like to

spectate at the rally, all details are available on the Federacion de Automovilismo Comunidad Valencenciana FaceBook page or website.

Presents Trophies Following the unexpected resignation of the incumbent SAMM Commodore for health reasons, an EGM was called for September 12th to elect a new member to the post. George Noden, a long time member of SAMM and an experienced sailor and competitor, was duly elected un-apposed. The EGM was followed by the normal SAMM monthly meeting during which the results (based on the low score system) of the Spring race program were announced. 17 races comprised the main series and, when the worst 6 scores were dropped, the results were completely dominated by boats from the Shoestring boat share group. First the Gamba ‘Shoestring Uno’ with 28 points. Second the Laser 2000 ‘Shoestring Dos’ with 32.75 points. Third the other Laser 2000 ‘Shoestring Tres’ with 45.5 points. Shoestring members who

had sailed on the boats during the series collected the trophies. The photograph shows (from left to right) new Commodore George, Dianne Hardwick for Uno, Brian Murray for Dos and John Down for Tres. For the first time a Mini Series, comprising only the races between April 15 to may 27, was run in the hope that some of the non-Spanish resident SAMM members could also share in the glory. This did not prove the case as the winner was permanent resident John Down in his RS Quba ‘Lola’. Details of the Autumn Series racing were also confirmed. Racing is every Sunday; weather permitting, at the CTD centre in Los Narejos on the Mar Menor. The day starts at 10am and all are welcome. For more details see the SAMM web site at http://sailingmarmenor.com/groups/sam m-racing/
