Playa Flamenca home owners not insured for house collapse The home owners of the eight houses on Calle Limon which collapsed after the land under them gave way a month ago have been told that they are not covered by the community insurer.

T

he houses have been officially declared irreparable and must be demolished in order to protect the other houses on the urbanisation. Despite the fact that the cause of the damage has not been determined, the insurer has declared that the damage is not covered under the community policy and so the insurer will not pay for the demolition or pay any compensation to those affected. There is also no come back against the builder or promoters of the properties as they were erected 22 years ago and so are no longer covered by any guarantee. However, luckily there is help at hand

as according to the community administrator, Antonio Felices, the 134

owners will pay for the demolition from the community charges that are levied to cover the upkeep and maintenance of the urbanisation. It is thought that the total sum for the demolition project could reach as much as 60,000 euros but will not be carried out until the architect hired by the urbanisation and the municipal surveyor from the Town Hall issue their reports into the cause of the collapse. The priority is to clarify how the task is going to be carried out and to try to get the owners who are left with nothing, beyond an empty piece of land, some compensation.

An early Black Friday for Torrevieja It seems, just like Christmas, that the discount day ‘Black Friday’ comes a little sooner every year. In Torrevieja the shops are preparing to join in the scramble to get your money on Friday 16th November and Saturday 17th November. It’s a good opportunity to get some bargains in before the Christmas rush. You can see some of the discounts available by visiting blackfridaytorrevieja.com. On the website you can see which shops are currently involved and what their discounts will be on these days. For example, Astoria on calle Pedro Lorca, will have a 20% discount on all their collections. The furniture shop, Hermanos García, is advertising a number of discounts on liquidation items as well as 10% off on furniture.

Negotiations begin on productivity The first meeting to try and establish the future productivity payments for town hall employees took place on 31st October. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, announced in a press conference that the meeting was conducted in a respectful way and with the aim of reaching agreement about the controversial payments. The meetings are in a bid to prevent a reoccurrence of the problems following August’s payments this year. The council were not prepared to make a productivity payment that was not linked to any form Continued on page 5

There are currently 292 families in Torrevieja who require social housing but there is only one available. This is the shocking statistic that the regional government of Valencia is proposing to address. The council are looking for properties to buy in buildings that are suitable for families to which they would then rent out the property. Torrevieja falls behind the cities of Alicante and Elche for social housing demand. In Alicante1,977 homes are required but there are only 27 available and in Elche the demand is for 705 with five being available. Part of the problem in Torrevieja is that although urban plans have indicated since 1986 that 10% of housing stock should be given over to social housing, this has not happened. It is now being hoped that with the development of La Hoya there will be more social housing that can be allocated. La Hoya is a huge planned urbanisation of seven thousand properties which could help settle the problem if the sector stays true to its current commitment.

An opportunity to sell your home The regional government is offering to purchase properties that are less than 50 years old in a building that has a lift, if the

building is high rise, and does not have debts held against it. It must also be registered in the Land Registry under the current owner’s name. In the case of a number of properties being put forward then other criteria will apply such as the availability of local services. At the moment it is unclear as to how many homes this could extend to. The application period began on 10th October and will close on 22nd November over the internet. The maximum that can be offered for these properties is €1,600 a square meter. This means, for example, that a property of 40 square metres could be purchased for €64,000 and one of 50 m2 for €80,000 and one of 80 m2 for €128,000. Prices that the local government recognise as being close to their market value in the town. The councillor, Fanny Serrano, suggests that this is a great opportunity for those people with a property on the market as the sale would be guaranteed. So far, not a single property has been put forward as a possibility from Torrevieja. A situation that seems rather unusual given that it is one of the most active housing markets in the country. Now the campaign is going to be advertised amongst community of owner administrators. of measurement of productivity. This caused difficulties in determining exactly how this payment, anticipated by employees, could be made. The mayor has asked for suggestions from those taking part, as to ways in which a solution can be found. These will then be submitted to the technicians in order to check whether the suggestions are permissible or not. Whatever solution is found, it must be one that cannot be questioned by anyone. A request was made by the unions that at the next meeting the technicians are also asked to attend.

Councillor Carmen Morate has announced that the provincial government of Alicante has allocated Torrevieja €10,252 to help it tackle the problem of stray cat colonies in the town. Immediate action has been taken to extend the programme of CES (Captura, Esterilización, Suelta) which means that cats are caught, sterilised and then returned to their usual environment. The idea being that the best way of reducing the colonies is by preventing them from populating them.

Congratulations to Torrevieja’s hospitals Both Torrevieja hospital and Hospital Quirón Salud have been awarded the Top20 national award for Global Hospital Management. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, met with the managers of both hospitals to congratulate them on this achievement. The Top20 awards recognise the work of the best health centres in Spain both for management and work in different clinical areas. Hospital Quirón Salud won its award for management of a private hospital and Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja for management of a large public hospital. Torrevieja hospital was also congratulated for its work in relation to kidney and urinary tract illnesses and women’s health.

Week of the spoon ‘Semana de la Cuchara’ is the rather unusual name for a week during which various bars and restaurants will be offering traditional recipes to their customers. The dishes on offer are ones whose recipes have been passed down for generations – the ones that grandma used to make. The week runs from 5th November until 11th November and will be the 6th event of this kind. There will be 20 different restaurants taking part and the details of these can be found on the website www.torreviejagastronomica.com The restaurants are mostly concentrated around the centre of Torrevieja and the dishes come in at a variety of different prices from €15 to €30. You can see the range of food available at the different restaurants on the website.

The town hall has been working with eight local vets on the project and this is the third year in which this initiative has continued to be played out in the town. It’s

not to eradicate the cats altogether. They also have a role in keeping down the rodent population. However, allowing the colonies to get too big creates a number of environmental problems that councillor Morate and her team are anxious to avoid. Where the cats continue to breed unchecked, there is an increase in the number of illnesses and they go hungry and thirsty. In some cases people have taken it upon themselves to poison cats, an action that is illegal and can be sanctioned with up to a €10,000 fine. ‘The castration of street cats is the only ethical solution that gives long term results,’explained councillor Morate. The donation from Alicante province will allow another 150 cats to be castrated. Those that have already been done can be identified from a little cut on the ear. The females on the right ear and the males on the left. This total will be added to the 59 cats that were castrated at the beginning of the year. So it is expected that by the end of 2018 a total of 200 cats will have had intervention. In total, since the beginning of the campaign, almost 1,500 cats have been neutered. Suzanne O’Connell

Remembrance Sunday Remembrance Sunday is held in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth of Nations as a day "to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts". It is held on the second Sunday in November, the Sunday nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11am in 1918. Across The United Kingdom, Remembrance Sunday is marked by ceremonies at local war memorials in most cities, towns and villages, attended by civic dignitaries, ex-servicemen and women (many are members of the Royal British Legion and other veterans' organisations), members of local armed forces regular and reserve units (Royal Navy and Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marines and Royal Marines Reserves, Army,

Local Services Here on the Costa Blanca Remembrance Services are organised by the Royal British Legion Branches and this year services will be held on Sunday, 11th November and this year will be especially poignant as we commemorate 100 years since the end of WW1. Poems and readings will be included by a number of Branches. The key services in our area will be: Saturday, 10th November Torrevieja Branch - beginning at 10.45 in La Siesta Church Torrevieja, following a Parade beginning at 10.40, congregation to be seated by 10.30. After the service, wreaths and personal crosses may be laid on the Cenotaph located in the church garden. Her Majesty the Queen lays a wreath at the Cenotaph in London.

Halloween celebrations It has grown in momentum over the past ten years. Now Halloween draws out more crowds than some of the traditional Easter parades. This year there was a huge turnout in the town of children, young people and some older ones too who joined the informal and formal processions around the town’s central streets. Earlier in the week the town hall had announced the winners of the short horror film competition. Seven film makers took part with their scary contributions and the winner of the first prize and €300 was ‘Diente de leche’. This film was about a 70 year-old dentist who spent all his time investigating how to become young again. Why is this scary? Because he tries out his theories on his patients first. The public’s choice of film was ‘Mi mejor cumpleaños’. It’s about a man trying to celebrate his birthday but every time an evil force gets in the way. This film was Continued on page 8

Lifeguard statistics from the summer The figures have now come in concerning the number of rescues and the attention given to the public by Torrevieja’s lifeguards. The lifeguards were stationed on the beaches from 15th June until 15th September and altogether were involved in 3,173 interventions. Many of the cases that the lifeguards were involved with in June were to due to jelly fish. However, they also attended to four people who needed resuscitation and took part in nine rescues from the sea. In July they attended to a total of 1,044 people of which 10 were resuscitations and 25 had to be rescued from the sea. August was the busiest month of all with 1,627 people attended to,16 resuscitations

and 54 rescues from the sea. Some of the interventions that the lifeguards took part in were more social than physical or medical. For example, they helped find and return children and older people lost on the beach. They also provided assistance to disabled people to enable them to enjoy the water too. The figures are generally considered to be positive and the councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, thanked and congratulated the lifeguards who were responsible for making Torrevieja’s beaches a safer place to be this year. Problems with the swimming pool continue The indoor swimming pool in Torrevieja was heralded as one of the finest when it was first opened. The Olympic-size pool has now been open for 17 years but even following significant restoration work, problems with it continue. Leaks from the pool are now the source of political debate in the town hall. Beneath the water there are some underground windows which are believed to be where the water is coming from. Two of these windows have been filled in to try and check the steady flow of water that has been causing problems since the pool was filled again.

Leaks have been a continuous issue since the pool was first opened. In November 2017, repairs were carried out that included maintenance work and the replacing of air conditioning. However, any maintenance work completed has not prevented water from seeping out of the pool again. Questions are being asked about whether the real problems with the pool actually go back to deficiencies in the materials that were used when it was first built. It could be that it isn’t so much maintenance that’s needed as a complete renovation. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Time for a preNEWS: Christmas clear out Continued from page 5 awarded a prize of €100. The competition had been organised by the Youth Council of Torrevieja, the youth association La Comarca and the University of Alicante.

Local Police officers acquitted The Local Police officers accused of the torture of two people arrested for robbery have been acquitted by the courts. The unions to which they belonged have congratulated the officers and have added their concerns about the difficulties it placed the whole force under whilst the matter was being investigated over a period of many years.

Meeting called for casino Over the past few months there has been continuing controversy around the election of the board members who oversee the Casino in Torrevieja. This imposing building at the front of the town is governed by a board of directors and there has been dispute about whether the members of this board should be allowed to continue to govern over more than two terms. Now, it is hoped that the calling of this extra meeting can bring the matter to a close and also enable the board to agree the contract to the firm who continue to renovate the building. The Casino has a membership of around 500 people, a reduction over the past five years of around 200. Suzanne O’Connell

for Age Concern With Christmas on the horizon it might be a good time to consider opening up those cupboards and drawers and seeing what’s lying there that you don’t use and perhaps have never used. Age Concern are asking for donations of household items, clothing and small electrical goods to sell in their charity shops. If you’re thinking of having a bit of a clear out, then they are a very good charity to support. Not only will you make space in your property but you’ll be helping other people too. Items such as crockery, kitchenware, lamps, pictures, glassware, small electrical items and ornaments are always welcome. You perhaps have unused bedding, towels and other items that you bought and then didn’t need or that were unwanted gifts. They might not be to your taste but they can be put to good use by others. All donations are gratefully received at their charity shops in Avenida del Mar, Los Montesinos or Patricio Zammit, 41, Torrevieja. Alternatively you can bring them to Age Concern’s day centre at Calle Paganini, La Siesta, which is open on

weekdays between 10.00am and 1.30pm. If you wish to donate a lot of boxes, heavy bags or even small items of furniture, Age Concern can collect these directly from your home. If you would like to arrange a collection please call 966 786 887.

So, if you have been putting off that clear out, now is the time to take up the challenge, de-clutter your life and help someone else out too. Suzanne O’Connell

Ryanair planes “at risk of collision” over Spain Two planes from the Irish airline Ryanair were at risk of colliding during their respective flights close to Pamplona, northern Spain earlier this month. That’s the conclusion of a preliminary report from the Spanish Civil Aviation Accidents and Incidents Investigation Commission, an independent organization linked to the Public Works Ministry that is investigating the circumstances of the incident. According to the document, this “serious” incident took place on 2nd October, when a Boeing 737-800 plane travelling from Santiago to Palma de Mallorca, and another identical aircraft heading from Seville to Toulouse, came dangerously close to one another around 30 kilometres from Pamplona. The planes were “on the frequency of the Madrid control centre” when the anticollision alert systems on both planes sounded. According to the commission, the planes were around four kilometers apart horizontally, and just 122 meters apart vertically. Once the alarms had sounded, the flight crew corrected their courses and the flights continued without incident. On 14th July, a Ryanair plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Germany after losing pressure during the flight. The plane, which was travelling from Dublin to the Croatian city of Zadar, with 189 passengers on board, dropped from 12,000 meters of altitude to 3,000 meters.

Spanish celebs choose planet over plastic Shock reports in the global media about how plastic has been found in human faeces – and every one of us eats it – have turned the tides for those who thought pollution was just a 'fish problem': at every meal, we munch our way through 100 pieces of microplastic, and these take 1,000 years to break down. So, if we don't pass it, we'll have to wait until the year 3018 for the plastic we ate in our last meal to vanish. Yuk. Already, a million marine birds and 100,000 sea mammals die every year because of plastic pollution, with up to 700 species being on the verge of extinction and 90 percent of those still alive thought to have plastic inside them. Recent harrowing footage on the BBC showed a Shearwater feeding plastic to her chicks, mistaking it for food, leaving the babies so weighed down by the substance that they were unable to fly. Now, Spanish celebrities have enlisted for the war on plastic, and their Twitter campaign is going viral. National Geographic España has called upon big names in the sports and arts worlds to answer the question, “Planet or plastic?” and 'put themselves in the shoes of sea turtles', by tweeting a photograph of them eating plastic. They then have to 'nominate' their friends, ideally other celebs, to do likewise, citing the hashtag #YoElijoPlaneta ('I choose planet'). Spanish national team goalkeeper Iker Casillas – currently living in Portugal with his TV presenter wife Sara Carbonero following his 2015 transfer to Oporto – was nominated by ex-Valencia CF and current New York City FC centre-

forward David Villa, along with Barcelona-born Cesc Fàbregas, central midfielder for Chelsea FC, and ex-Barça and current Vissel Kobe FC midfielder Andrés Iniesta. Ex-Real Madrid goalie Casillas nominated friends from his old team's arch-rival Barça, Ivan Rakitić and Jordi Alba. Earlier this year, 'Almodóvar Girl' Penélope Cruz – best known to Englishspeaking fans for her roles in Vanilla Sky, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Blow, and All the pretty horses –published a video of the results of public-sector workers in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, spending three days clearing plastic from the sea: three tonnes of it heaped up, and barely a dent made on the sheer volume of waste floating around beneath the waves. Her husband, Skyfall 'Bond villain' Javier Bardem went out on a 'plastic patrol' boat in May off the coast of Blanes (Girona province) and returned with massive amounts of rubbish pulled up by fishing net: parts of pipes, bottles, golf balls and deflated footballs, as well as the usual bags and packets. Spanish celebrities supporting the anti-plastic pollution charity Oceana include veteran pop-rocker Miguel Bosè and model Almudena Fernández, who has been the face of Hermès, Givenchy, Carolina Herrera and Cartier. Non-Spanish celebs backing Oceana include Barbra Streisand, Pierce Brosnan, Sting and Harrison Ford. Beyond Spain, singer Moby, Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen, and British chimp expert and Prince of Asturias Prize winner Jane Goodall have joined the #BeatThePlastic campaign against the

use of disposable plastic bags and other material. Resident Evil's Sienna Guillory may have been spotted by fans in August whilst filming Martín Rosete's forthcoming production Remember Me in Madrid and Navarra – along with Almodóvar's Kika, Verónica Forqué – but certainly wouldn't have been seen with a Mercadona carrier bag in her hand. She has joined Greenpeace's campaign to urge retailers to shun disposable plastic. “Supermarkets make 800,000 tonnes of poisonous single-use plastic packaging a year. I've just told supermarket bosses I don't want any more; will you join me?” Sienna tweeted two months ago. And all this celebrity campaigning is working. Six in 10 consumers in Spain now take their own reusable bags to the supermarket, and seven in 10 separate plastic from the rest of their household rubbish for recycling – even when their nearest 'yellow bin' is over a 10-minute walk away, as is the case in some towns. More than half of Spanish shoppers would choose products with biodegradable packaging if they could – even if this meant paying more for them. And 43 percent complain of 'pointless packaging' in supermarkets which could have been avoided, particularly on the fruit and vegetable counters. Consumer organisation OCU says so far, only 11 percent would avoid buying products involving disposable plastic, and that an 'information deficit' among shoppers still exists about the consequences of plastic waste – despite 92 percent of respondents to its survey recognising that pollution is a massive issue for the environment.

RECYCLE The OCU urges consumers to buy products loose, by weight, where possible, and to avoid using plastic plates and cutlery, wet-wipes, cotton buds and drinking straws. And in practically the whole of Spain, tap water is drinkable – you can often avoid buying bottled water, even in bars: in many regions, including Madrid and Andalucía, cafés and restaurants are obliged to provide glasses of water rather than bottles on request. Hopefully, more regions will follow suit: bottles of water are among the biggest offenders in terms of plastic pollution, given that a million of them are bought every year worldwide. Where disposable plastic really cannot be avoided due to lack of alternatives, recycling is vital: milk and juice cartons, wrappers, carrier bags and even drinks cans and food tins – such as for tuna and sardines – can be deposited in the 'yellow bins'. Look out for the recycling sign, an arrowed 'yin-and-yang' symbol, on all items before you throw them out – you'll be amazed at how much potential rubbish carries this, and how genuine household waste shrinks to a fraction after removing plastics. Recycling banks specifically for clothing, glass, cooking oil and paper or cardboard are very well indicated, but the 'yellow bin' is often a mystery to householders. In a nutshell, any item of rubbish bearing the recycling symbol and which is not obviously glass, paper or cardboard goes in the 'yellow bin'.

Congress moves to decriminalise insulting the king Spanish Congress has agreed to discuss reforms to the Criminal Code that would soften or even eliminate crimes such as insulting the king, inciting terrorism and offending religious sentiments. The initiative, put forward by left-wing party Unidos Podemos, has the support of the governing Socialist Party (PSOE) and nationalist parties but has been rejected by centre-right groups Ciudadanos and the Popular Party (PP), who say it is a “free-for-all against symbols and institutions.” The opposition parties argue the PSOE is supporting the reform to repay nationalist parties for backing the no-confidence motion that ousted PP leader Mariano Rajoy from power and saw Pedro Sánchez of the PSOE become prime minister. On Tuesday, parliament voted 180 in favour and 160 against reforming the Criminal Code. If this majority holds and there are no further amendments or postponements, within a few months it will no longer be a crime to insult the king, national symbols and state institutions, or offend religious sentiment. The PSOE and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) have, however, warned they want to put “limits” on the reform. The aim of the initiative is to protect the right to freedom of expression that, according to Unidos Podemos politician Alberto Garzón, has suffered a “regression at a political and judicial level.” Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have criticized Spain for depriving citizens of their right to free speech, arguing cases such as that of Voltonyc, a Spanish rapper who was sentenced to three years in prison for insulting the king, show that it is “penalising” legitimate views. Spanish actor Willy Toledo was recently arrested for

offending religious sentiment in a Facebook post and last year, a 21-year-old college student was given a one-year jail sentence for joking on Twitter about an assassination in the 1970s by Basque terror group ETA. Garzón, as well as representatives of the Catalan separatist parties European Democratic Party of Catalonia (PdeCAT) and the Catalan Republican Left (ERC), put together a list of other cases where people had been arrested, incarcerated and fined for insulting the crown (Article 193 and 491 of the Penal Code), attacking state institutions (Article 504), and offending nationalist symbols and religious sentiment (Article 525). The initiative from Unidos Podemos also wants to limit the crime of inciting terrorism given that ETA, which killed more than 800 people in its violent campaign for the independence of the Basque Country, no longer exists. This aspect of the reform is likely to be modified by the PSOE when it passes through parliament. Garzón maintains that the proposed change will continue to protect the victims of terrorism, as an attack against a victim will be defined as an aggravating factor in crimes. In a discussion on freedom of expression, Gregorio Cámara, a professor of constitutional law from the PSOE, argued: “Freedom of expression has to be understood not only of inoffensive ideas but rather those that contradict, attack, upset the state, a group of the population or the democratic system.” PNV representative Mikel Legarda Legarda agreed: “There must not be criminal sanctions on political or

ideological protests even if they are shameful, unfair and offensive. Punishing hate speech, he said, leads to “violent and hurtful behaviour.” Cámara and Legarda say that the reform needs to be limited but these concessions have not appeased Ciudadanos or the PP. “It is a free-for-all against our symbols and institutions, for impunity of offenses against religious, social sentiments on social media and the incitement of terrorism,”said PP representative Leopoldo Barreda.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE GBP: The big expected news this week was the Chancellor’s budget statement. In the end, there was no change to sterling after the announcement of a number of measures aimed at stimulating growth. The Office of Budget Responsibility upgraded their growth forecasts, but not significantly enough to move the pound, perhaps because both the projections and the government’s budget statement both came with the caveat that everything might change after a Brexit deal had been agreed. There was a dip in sterling after a negative response to the budget in relation to the UK’s departure to the EU; the Institute for Fiscal Studies described Philip Hammond's pre-Brexit Budget as "a bit of a gamble". Lloyds Bank's survey of UK businesses found confidence falling across the board to its lowest level this year. Standard & Poor's predicted that a no-deal Brexit would lead to recession. However, in an impressive turnaround, Wednesday brought good news – or at least, positive rumour – and the pound gained an average of 1% overnight after a number of stories appeared in the press. A survey by HSBC came up with results at odds with the Lloyds Bank study a day earlier: a majority of UK businesses are ready for Brexit and optimistic about trade prospects. Brexit minister Dominic Raab has suggested that a deal with the EU will be done within three weeks. And The Times reports that an arrangement has been made to allow UK financial companies to continue doing business with the EU after Britain's departure. Ahead of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee announcement on interest rates, the pound was up 1.06% against the US dollar and 0.55% against the euro. Although there was no change on the interest

rate, an indication that interest rates could raise faster than expected once the Brexit picture becomes clear gave the pound another boost and it had the biggest rise in a single day since August. EUR: Local elections in the German state of Hessen saw chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU party lose more seats but this was expected and the euro didn’t move. However, there was a response to the announcement, however much it was anticipated, that Merkel will not seek re-election. There was no good news from the numbers, which showed weak growth and poor confidence data across euroland but there was little response from the euro. Gross domestic product in the euro zone expanded by a provisional 0.2% in the third quarter, half the growth forecast by analysts. Of the five confidence measures tracked by the European Commission, four were lower and one consumer confidence - was unchanged. Growth in Italy stagnated in Q3, pouring petrol on the incipient debt crisis there. In France it was steady at 2.5% in October and for the euro zone as a whole it is expected to accelerate slightly from 2.1% to 2.2%. Consumer prices in the euro zone increased by a provisional 2.2% in the year to October. The higher inflation rate was in line with analysts' forecasts. Having softened ahead of the announcement the euro recovered most of the lost ground but there was no carry-through. Even though the core inflation measure - excluding food and energy - ticked up to 1.1% investors were not persuaded that the numbers were fierce enough to affect European Central Bank policy. The euro was unchanged on the day against the US dollar and almost so against the yen and the Canadian dollar. The four of them competed for last place among the major currencies.

WELCOME TO CALABRIA

with Vivalia Travel

C

alabria is a region in Southern Italy. It's considered the Caribbean of Europe thanks to its pristine beaches, stunning landscape, and rustic charms. Hillside towns, ancient Greek temples and Byzantine churches dot the countryside of Italy's best kept secret. The region's climate is mild in the winter, with hot, dry summers. The region is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea: the Ionian Sea is to the east, the Tyhrrenean to the west and the Strait of Messina to the south. As such, the sea is a big part of the region's culture and cuisine. Calabria is subdivided into five provinces: Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia. Calabria has historically been one of the poorest regions in Italy, although it is improving now. The region is

quite undeveloped and undervisited by tourists but is, therefore, also unspoiled. When you visit Calabria, spending a couple of days in Praia a Mare (known as Praja) is a great time. The off coast Dino Island is popular for its Grotta Azzurra (Blue Cave), where you can swim surrounded by fish in crystal blue water. EAT AND DRINK If there is a fundamental ingredient to Calabrese cooking, it would be the peperoncino. Calabrese cooking tends toward the spicy thanks to the generous use of various varieties of hot peppers in regional cuisine. In fact, so popular is the peperoncino, that the village of Diamante honors the hot pepper with its own festival. In the first week of September the locals celebrate the Festival del Peperoncino, dedicated to the unofficial symbol of Calabria -the cayenne pepper. During

the festival, one can taste freshly harvested peppers or try locally-produced products that make use of the spicy condiment -- anything from pasta to (yes) gelato. Olio Santo, olive oil infused with hot pepper, is sometimes added to a plate of pasta to give it a little extra zip. Soppressata (Sopresatta) is a popular dried sausage typical of the region. Also, Alici ripieni, stuffed anchovies, is a popular seafood dish. Sardella is produced in some of the towns along the Ionian coast in the province of Cosenza. It is a spicy paste made with olive oil, mashed baby sardines and hot pepper. On the other hand, Calabria is an up-and-coming producer of wines, with a number of regional wines earning the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) label from the Italian government, such as: Bivongi, Melissa or Savuto.

Catalan independence leaders to be tried in the Supreme Court The former Deputy Premier of the Catalan regional government, Oriol Junqueras, and 17 other proindependence leaders, will be tried in the Supreme Court in coming months for having passed a unilateral declaration of independence through the regional parliament. The court has announced that it has completed the investigative stage of the case, in which the 18 politicians are facing charges of rebellion, misappropriation of public funds and disobedience for their actions in October 2017, which came weeks after an illegal referendum on independence was held in Catalonia. The trial is likely to begin in 2019. As well as Junqueras, who is the leader of the Catalan Republican Left (ERC), the former regional ministers Joaquim Forn, Jordi Turull and Raül Romeva will be sitting in the dock, as well as former Catalan parliament speaker Carme Forcadell. The trial will be the most important to be heard in the Supreme Court since the attempted coup on February 23rd, 1981. The prosecutions in the case – made up of the public prosecutor, Spanish political party Vox and the solicitor general’s office – will now have to file their petitions for sentences against the accused. Then it will be the turn of the defence teams for the accused, among them the nine people currently in pre-trial custody who are accused of rebellion. The Supreme Court has ruled that the accused – as well as the seven politicians

who fled Spain to avoid arrest, including former premier Carles Puigdemont – played an essential role in a plan that had been concocted in 2012 from within the regional government to declare independence at any cost. In the process, they trampled over the Constitution, state laws, and failed to comply with dozens of Constitutional Court rulings that annulled the initiatives approved by the regional government and passed through the Catalan parliament in order to move their plan for secession from Spain forward. The court expects the trial to extend at least three months. If so, the ruling is not likely to be ready before June, which means that the decision will not be known before the local and regional elections scheduled for May 26, 2019.

Radical changes Record for to child abuse law profits SEAT The Spanish government has announced that it is going to present a reform to the Criminal Code so that sexual abuse cases involving minors have no statute of limitations, thus putting paedophilia offences on the same level as terrorist attacks and genocide, which are the only other crimes with no time limit. The Deputy Prime Minister, Carmen Calvo, conveyed the news to the secretary of state at the Vatican, Pietro Parolin, during a two-hour meeting between the two in Rome. The Socialist Party (PSOE) politician also broached other delicate issues in terms of stateChurch relations, including tax benefits for bishops and land and properties claimed by the Catholic Church in Spain. The meeting came at a particularly uncomfortable moment for the ecclesiastical hierarchy, given recent news stories published by Spanish newspaper El Pais that prove that the institution silenced sexual offenses committed by the clergy for decades, despite having knowledge of them. “The Church has conveyed its concern, which is shared by the government, over the need to deliver justice to the victims of abuse, and prevent these incidents taking place in the future,” read a statement released by the Spanish government shortly after the meeting. “As such, the government has informed the Vatican of changes to the Criminal Code with a view to removing the statute of

limitations from these offenses.” The Spanish government is planning to go further than was thought with this reform to the Criminal Code, which was expected to include an extension of the time frames within the statute of limitations. Currently in Spain, the time period begins when the victim turns 18. According to the severity of the case, the courts have between five and 15 years to act – meaning that the oldest possible age of the victim when the statute of limitations runs out is 33. But many victims take years to digest the abuse they have suffered and to talk about them, meaning that in many cases the offenders cannot be prosecuted. Studies carried out by Save the Children put the average age at which victims decide to talk at 35.

Spanish car manufacturer SEAT has posted record operating profits of 237 million euros for the period between January and September 2018, a substantial 54.4 percent increase vis-à-vis the figure of 154 million for the same period in 2017. Seat announced today that the volume of business had grown 7.744 billion over the same period, 6.7 percent more than in the previous year (2017: 7.255 billion), the highest figures in the company's history for the first nine months of the year. "The financial results obtained between January and September 2018 reflect the positive phase Seat is going through", said a spokesperson for the company. The increase in sales between January and September, during which time Seat has reached the highest volume in the company's history with 415,600 vehicles delivered (up by 17.1 percent), has been the driving force behind the rise in operating results and billing. The launch of Arona also had a favourable effect on Seat's operating profits, as did the increased margin on models sold thanks to a greater mix. With regard to the predictions for the rest of 2018, results will depend in part on the effects of implementing the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Procedure, or WLTP, which comes into force across Europe in September. At the same time, Seat plans to increase investment in R & D of new models ara nuevos modelos and will be increasing their marketing activities with the launch of the Tarraco and the CUPRA Ateca.

Local school children help community project Children from the ESI Academy, international school in La Marina have been helping to create a Garden of Reflection in the urbanisation by working on a poppy waterfall. Head teacher Jane Fowkes had spotted on social media that a garden of reflection had been created in La Marina by local resident Debbie Alger whose father past away 10 years ago and wanted somewhere quiet and peaceful to go and lay flowers or sit and reflect. Although the garden has been open for a while, Debbie now wanted to add the unusual waterfall.Jane said: “I thought it would be lovely for the children to get involved in the community and offered their services. We had just celebrated Red, White and Blue Day as it's 100 years since end of WW1 and we raised €100 for ex service men, women and their families from the Navy, Army

and Air force. And this initiative would complement the project.” Debbie has worked tirelessly on the garden, initially approaching the Town Hall to get permission to establish a communal garden and then organised fundraising and volunteers to help realised her dream. There are now two walls of remembrance and benches for people to sit in quiet reflection. Once she announced her plans to add a poppy waterfall the whole community supported the idea. The ESI Academy took six children down to the garden, who made poppies and attached them to the mesh used to create the waterfall and everyone involved was very grateful for their help on a cold and blustery day. ESI Academy, La Marina has doubled its student numbers since opening in 2017 and

teaches children aged between 4 and 16 years old in small classes with excellent teacher to student ratios. The Academy teaches a full range of subjects adhering to the British curriculum to GCSE and A Level standard and B-Tech courses. The children also have four Spanish classes each week to ensure fluency in the national language. All of the staff are fully qualified, professional teachers with decades of experience behind them and in addition to formal lessons, the Academy also provides daily mixed gender football sessions with a professional football coach. If required, additional English and Spanish classes are available, as is Performing Arts tuition. Visitors always welcome and for further details see the schools Facebook page.

re you one of the many people that put your property on the market, knowing full well, that your asking price is unachievable? This occurs more often than you think, and a problem that has nothing to do with the property itself, but is a psychological dilemma for you, the homeowner. When you knowingly put your property on the market for a higher than market value price, then you’re not doing yourself any favours. You need to ask yourself why is it that you’re even on the market, and if you really do want to sell? If you’ve been on the market for more than a year, and there is nothing structurally wrong with your house, then I can guarantee the problem is your asking price. When your property has been up for sale for such a long time with offers you’ve been consistently refusing, this is the number one telltale sign that you need to change your way of thinking, and ask yourself what it is you really want to achieve. The property market has been busy this year, but buyers won’t be duped into paying over the odds, so you need to ask your trusted Real Estate Agent for an up-to-date price assessment on your home. But more importantly, you need to listen to them. By keeping your property above market value, will deter buyers from even putting an offer forward.

What do you think is going to be different now, compared to the last one to two years of being on the market? Think you’re going to attain a higher price? Wrong! The amount of time you’ve been on the market will ultimately affect your offer. I’ve heard every excuse in the book, when it comes to why people want the price they ask, and a reason like “taking the funds back to the U.K. will not buy exactly what I want,” does not change the true market value of a property here. No buyer will pay more for a home, just because they feel sorry for you. Maybe you always get cold feet when an offer is forthcoming? You’re quite happy to stay put, moaning and groaning on how long you’ve been up for sale, as you get scared when you think things are moving too fast, when you know you’re going to need time to sort through your effects for the impending move. But let’s face it, you’ve been on the market for so long, and you’re still putting the decluttering off! What does that tell you? The answer is maybe you’re not ready to actually let go, and if you have a reasonable asking price, you may just, dare I say it? SELL! With any home sale, it can feel stressful. But you’re not having to move out tomorrow, so don’t panic! Speak with your Real Estate Agent, and tell them you need a longer time between reservation to completion. They will work with you and help you along the way. Choose the correct price for your home, get it sold, and move on to your next chapter in life. Don’t you feel in limbo, waiting for a sale that you’re holding yourself back on? Act now and stop putting off the inevitable. You’ll be glad in the end you did, when you’re sitting relaxed in your new home! Selling your home? Enjoy the journey! STRIKING OUT FOR Elvis raises cash STROKE SUPPORT Once again, the charity night at El Paraiso de Guardamar Restaurant was a complete sell out. With WOODY providing the entertainment this was always going to be a great success. 1,142 euros was raised for the Stroke Association Spain, and this will be used towards a special 'vertical' bed for the rehabilitation unit. The bed helps stroke sufferers slowly regain strength and control in their legs. In addition to rehabilitation and physiotherapy there is a range of social activities arranged on Wednesday afternoons, including cardmaking; zumba; manicures etc. These activities are an important part of the

rehabilitation process for stroke victims, and proving very popular. The next charity night will be in aid of The Children's Care Home Elche, and is on Thursday 15th November with the fabulous Johnny Scott. Not only do Johnny and Woody look alike, but their repertoire is very similar, so for a rocking good night don't miss this one, especially as it will be the last charity night for some time. Tickets are available from El Paraiso, Post Room Benijofar, Card Place in Benimar and REDZ cafe/bar in Quesada . At just 10 euros, including a meal this represents tremendous value.

An Elvis Tribute on Tuesday October 30th at Frasquitin Restaurant on the Callosa Road, Catral raised 792 euros for HELP. Steve Arnold from HELP kindly helped orgsaniser Pat Milligan collect the lunch money and Lesley Mouncher and Sue Kitchen hels the raffle. Danny Elvis Fisher got everyone up dancing, a great afternoon.

Pat is hosting another event at Frasquitin Restaurant on Wednesday December 12th with Roberto The Voice. Tickets only 5 euros music starts at 3pm till 6pm. Menu Del Dai is 12 euros at 1pm. This is raising money for the AECC in Albatera. Tickets from Patricia Milligan on 693063293 or Linda Sutcliffe in Albatera.

Reach Out Christmas Fair

The next Reach Out charity event will be the popular Christmas Fair on Saturday November 17th. 2pm at the Marina Bar Calle de las Rosas Torrevieja. As usual there will be Christmas decorations, gifts, raffle tombola, name the bear, various other stalls and of course an early visit from Santa himself for the children and all the big children amongst us. It is sure to be a fun afternoon for all the family so please support this worthwhile charity for the poor and homeless in the area.

I’m a Mean Ole Lion Charity calendar for APANEE The charity for special needs children Apanee (Asociación de Padres de Alumnos con Necesidades Educativas Especiales) has released their 2019 calendar for sale. The calendar has been prepared in conjunction with the Guardia Civil and includes important pictures from around Torrevieja. The release of the calendar has been an annual event since 2010 with a different theme chosen each year. The Guardia Civil has been keen to get involved in the project as they recognise its value and the important place that this group of children hold in the town. The calendar will come on sale on 10th November with a gala dinner in the Castillo de San Miguel. The celebration will also include a dance performance from the ballet Meygas de Crevillente and from Nerea Almendros who was a semifinalist in Got Talent 2017. The price of the gala dinner is €53 some of which will contribute to the Apanee charity. The calendar itself will cost €5 and can be

purchased from the organisation’s base in Calle Rafal as well in different shops and other businesses in Torrevieja. Parents of the children attending the school will also be selling them. In the APANEE school building students can access physiotherapy, psychology, speech therapy and other health treatments that can help them address the complex disabilities that they have. Some of the pupils need four or even five different treatments every week. Because of the range of needs that they have, the centre is dependent on charity support. Suzanne O’Connell

We want to go home

I want to live my dream

My husband and I came to Spain 9 years ago when we were 75, and relatively active and well. Now, due to ill-health we are no longer able to drive, and have found there is little here in Spain for us. We are having to pay for help with shopping, meal preparation and cleaning etc. We would dearly like to return home to the UK, but find that we can no longer afford to buy a property there. Also, rental properties are too expensive, and we only have our state pensions. We feel we are stuck, and are so miserable.

I am 14 years old, and everyone says I have talent and that I should go in to show business. I particularly want to do stand-up comedy, singing and impressions. I wanted to go to a stage school but my parents said they couldn't afford it. I understand, but I have this great desire to perform, and no way of doing it.

I hear from a lot of retirees in Spain, who are faced with the same problem. My advice would be to contact Social Services in the UK, and look in to sheltered housing as a possibility. Also enquire about any social security benefits that you may be entitled to. If you are both suffering from failing health, you may be eligible for extra financial help in the form of Attendance Allowance or Pension Credit. I am sending you some information.

I assume you are taking every opportunity at school to join in on drama activities, plays etc. This is a great place to start. Secondly, look outside of school for things such as singing and dancing clubs for young people. If there is no money or help from your Mum and Dad, then think about getting yourself a part time job and financing things yourself. Alternatively, you could ask around at school if any other students would be interested in starting a theatre group, and put on small shows for the community. Finally you could consider busking as an outlet for your talents. Check with the local authority that you are not breaking any by-laws though.

Sharon drugged husband Ozzy with extra sleeping pills Sharon Obsbourne has admitted that she drugged her husband Ozzy so that he would admit to cheating on her. In a desperate bid to uncover his unfaithful ways, the former X Factor judge gave Ozzy extra sleeping pills to loosen his tongue. Sharon, 66, recalled feeling broken as she read an email Ozzy had sent her that had meant to be for one of his mistresses, said a UK press report. ‘He would have never told me the truth, ever. He was ashamed, afraid. I knew how long. I knew who it was. I knew what he was thinking and then, you know, you leave.’ At the time the couple, who had been married for 33 years, split up but recon-ciled just four months later and renewed their wedding vows. Sharon said that although she has decided to stand by her husband she doesn’t trust him as far as she can throw him.

Ariana Grande left viewers in tears as she delivered a series of passionate performances in a one-off BBC special, a year on from the Manchester terrorist attack. The singer, 25, was praised by presenter Davina McCall for returning to the UK for the One Love benefit concert in June last year, less than two weeks after the bombing which saw a death toll of 22. Thanking the star for her bravery following the tragic incident, the 51-yearold host said: ‘The outpouring of love, not just from people from Manchester, but the nation really – we’ve all taken you slightly under our wing because you came back. Following the devastating terror attack, Ariana took to the stage in Manchester at the Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground to host her star-studded One Love benefit concert. Ariana was joined by a slew of global superstars for the benefit gig.

Ant McPartlin is reportedly paying his ex wife Lisa Armstrong’s legal bills in a bid to get their split settlement finalised before Christmas. According to UK press, the TV presenter, 42, hopes he and the Strictly make-up guru, 42, will finalise their divorce in the next few weeks so everyone can move on. It was claimed the Saturday Night Takeaway star is paying Lisa’s legal bills and also funded her recent holiday to Los Angeles. The former couple were granted a decree nisi last month, after 12 years of marriage. The pair also share custody of their dog Hurley. A source told the website: ‘Ant is paying for all of Lisa’s legal fees. ‘He is still helping her financially with other expenses, like when she went on holiday to LA. The source added Ant hopes to settle in ‘weeks rather than months.’

Jeff Brazier’s wife Kate gushes about her stepsons’ heart-warming wedding speech. She tied the knot with her long-time love Jeff Brazier during a romantic ceremony in Portugal’s Algarve back in September. And Kate Brazier has opened up about the heart-warming speech delivered by her new stepsons Bobby, 15, and Freddy, 14, during which they assured her that she was getting it right in her role as their stepmother. Taking to her Instagram account, the PR executive shared a snapshot of the boys - whose mother Jade Goody died after a cancer battle in 2009 - sharing their speech at their cliff top wedding reception. Captioning the image, which showed Kate and Bobby looking on adoringly at Freddy as he spoke, the brunette beauty wrote: ‘There are good days and bad days and in all honesty I am still learning to be

better every single day of this #stepmum journey. ‘But, this was without a doubt the single most special moment of my life with these boys so far. ‘The only opinions that matters are theirs and to see them stand up and tell everyone that I am getting it right (most of the time) was nothing short of life affirming for me. What an absolute honour.’ The boys were Jeff’s two best men for the occasion, wearing matching white and black tuxedos for the clifftop ceremony. Speaking to Hello! Jeff, 39, said of the wedding: ‘I’m so happy to marry Kate, who has brought so much stability to my life. This isn’t just any wedding, this is a really special one. ‘It doesn’t just represent Kate and I putting rings on each other’s fingers. It represents the fact that we won at something really tricky. We won at becoming a family.’ The event took place at the lavish Tivoli Carvoeiro resort and came nine years after Jeff’s sons lost their mother, Jade, to cervical cancer. Son Freddy added: ‘(Dad) has found that girl who he’s going to live with for the rest of his life.‘

The Smile Charity group performed another rib splitting comedy supper show at the Casa Ventura to rave reviews on Thursday 25th October. The audience were laughing throughout the production and patrons commented on the originality of the script penned by John Wallace which was full of typical British humour of sauciness and innuendo. The Smile Company produced a well rehearsed, slick piece of comic theatre. All the musical numbers received rapturous applause. However the King’s of Leon number Your Sex is on Fire will never be the same again after the unique and hilarious comic interpretation of the number by Lena (Lynn Preston) and Lenny (Keith Longshaw) who quite brought the house down. This number had people totally convulsed with laughter. Like all Smile plays Escape from Butlitz had many unexpected twists and turns. These include the genial camp host Benny Hoffa, the visit of a Nerd for the planet Twitzalvania, to the unorthodox children’s entertainment programme provided by Ethel. All members of the cast gave memorable

performances and great interpretation of their respective characters. However special note should be given to Bev McEwn who stepped into the cast at a few days notice because of illness and gave a great performance as Gordon Blue, knowing all her lines and giving a faultless performance. One person summed up the play saying that the music was great, the play was fast moving, hilarious and totally original and that the joy of the company performing was infectious. Don’t miss the chance to see this great production. Smile will be doing further shows at the Club Quesada on the 14th and 16th November, Marjal Camp Site at Guardamar on November 15th and El Paraiso, Guardamar on Friday November 23rd. Tickets available from the venues, any member of the Smile Charity Group, The Postroom in Benijofar and Oasis Bar Bistro Benijofar. Eleanor Keithley

BARCELONA DRUG DENS RAIDED

Around 700 members of the Catalan regional police force and more than 100 municipal officers swept through Barcelona’s downtown neighbourhood of El Raval in a raid against so-called narcopisos – illegally occupied apartments used to sell and consume drugs. There were 55 arrests in one of the largest police operations ever seen in the Catalan capital, where the authorities are trying to crack down on rising crime. Recent police statistics show that the number of reported crimes so far this year has increased by 19 percent. Mayor Ada Colau, of the leftist Catalunya en Comú group, has been

facing criticism over a growing sense of insecurity in the city. The move against the drug dens comes a few months before local and regional elections are due to be held across Spain. Helicopters began hovering over the narrow streets of El Raval shortly after 7am, while a special unit of the Mossos d’Esquadra raided dozens of apartments and police vans fanned out across the area. The police dismantled operations in 26 drug dens, arresting 55 people who allegedly controlled the drug network. These individuals, most of whom are citizens of Dominican Republic, had illegally occupied empty premises and

were using them to deal a range of drugs but mostly heroin, which was available to users in very small doses. A few Spanish nationals were also detained, and accused of owning properties and using them for illegal profit as drug dens. The court that has been handling the investigation since April has issued 10 additional arrest warrants against as many individuals who remain at large. Police sources estimated that there could still be around a dozen drug dens operating in the district of Ciutat Vella, which includes the neighborhood of El Raval. The term narcopiso was coined shortly before the summer of 2017, when

residents of El Raval began warning about the constant presence of heroin addicts going in and out of these apartments, either to buy the drug and take it away, or to consume it right there. Around 60 such properties were counted at the time. There was a simultaneous rise in petty crime around these drug dens, as addicts resorted to theft to pay the €5-7 for a dose. Until now, local and regional police had been acting against these properties one at a time, securing individual court warrants to go in, seize the drug and arrest the sellers. But the problem became chronic when consumers began taking over from the arrested dealers, forcing the police to obtain a new warrant against the same property and start all over again. The recent raid was the climax of a more ambitious, months-long investigation involving phone taps. The judge in charge of the case has cordoned off the narcopisos, making it illegal to go inside. Of the 26 properties that were targeted on Monday, 13 have been returned to their rightful owners and five have been boarded up. The mayor and the regional chief of internal affairs, Miquel Buch, made a joint appearance after the raid to celebrate its success. The press conference was also a public

www.costablancapeople.com

show of cooperation between two political leaders who have often been at odds with each other. Mayor Colau has repeatedly asked the regional department chief for more Mossos in El Raval to deal with the rising crime statistics. At the most recent city security meeting, Buch promised more street patrols and greater cooperation between the regional and municipal police forces. Nonstop traffic “I have counted up to 50 consumers an hour going up and down the stairs for more than six months,” said one resident who lives in a building where the police raided a drug den. “The staircase is broken from the weight of so many people. It was impossible to keep my building in sanitary conditions.” Ángel Cordero, of the local association Acció Raval, criticised how late the raid has come. “So late that it has left a lot of side effects on the neighbourhood,” he notes. “Some residents have had to move out of the area. Others live with the anxiety of having a narcopiso directly above or below them, where consumers are constantly coming and going.” “I was renting out my apartment. The tenant went away on vacation, and when he came back he found that the place had been occupied and turned into a narcopiso,” explained Sairica Rose, owner of a property at 7 Sant Climent Street. “I filed a complaint in April but it was June by the time the Mossos threw out the squatters. When I was finally able to walk in, the place had been trashed, there were needles on the stairs, filth.”

Madagascar 6.25pm Channel 4

Animated comedy about four spoiled animals from New York Central Zoo whose botched escape attempt finds them stranded in the Madagascar jungle with no experience of the wild. One of Madagascar’s great strengths is its impressive cast including Ben Stiller, who is on top form as the neurotic Lion, and David Schwimmer who also impresses as a melodramatic giraffe. But it is Sacha Baron Cohen who steals the show as the riotous leader of a tribe of lemurs.

Spain still tops for Brits Brits choose Spain as number one ‘dream location’ when fantasising about living abroad, according to new research by leading home moving company AnyVan.com Statistics released by AnyVan.com show that Spain is the most popular destination for UK residents fantasising of a move overseas, with 13 percent of the respondents picking it as their number one choice. Those dreaming of living in the Spanish sun would join at least 300,000 British citizens already living in the country. Australia and New Zealand ranked joint second in the dream move table, with 12 percent each. Other popular moves on the wish list included USA (10 percent), Canada (9 percent), Italy (7 percent) and France (6 percent). The data shows age is a major factor in determining the popularity of a dream move abroad. Young adults prefer countries with more opportunities for lucrative career prospects and lavish lifestyles. The US came out top choice for under 34s, with 16 percent listing this as their favourite, followed by Australia and then Spain. Dubai was also more popular with younger adults, with 4 percent dreaming of a move to

the Middle East. For older adults over the age of 55, New Zealand (14 percent) came out top of their dream move. Brits living on the south coast of England seem more keen to keep their coastal lifestyle, with Italy being more popular with people living in Southampton (12 percent) and Brighton (15 percent) than the UK average of 7 percent. For Londoners, New Zealand was the top pick with 13 percent followed by US and Canada both at 11 percent and Australia at 10 percent. Angus Elphinstone, CEO of AnyVan.com commented “It’s nearly a national sport in the UK to dream about moving. From

47

flicking through property prices and listings on Rightmove to sitting down to watch one of the vast number of primetime TV shows offering advice to those looking to change homes for a place in the sun. “Our research highlighted where people dream to move to, but there were still 16 percent of residents that didn’t want to move anywhere. With such a vast number of different landscapes, coastal views and green spaces, it’s easy to see why so many are living their dream in the UK and don’t feel they need to move elsewhere.” Opinium polled 2,000 British citizens in the UK in September 2018.

Walking the Dog Every Wednesday volunteers meet up at Barkinside animal rescue and sanctuary to walk those dogs awaiting their forever homes. Some bring their own dogs too! The walk not only gives people the chance to see the dogs that are looking for homes but also to exercise the dogs and themselves. In addition it enables like minded, dog loving people to meet and chat. The dogs have so much fun and these walks leave everyone feeling uplifted. Last Wednesday there were 20 dogs on the walk with 14 people. In addition to the dog walking at Barkinside every week, guided walks are arranged at different times of the year in La Romana. Join us on the Winter Wonderland Walk on Sunday 09 December at

11am. We are meeting at The Old Bell in La Romana and the walk is an easy level and distance. As always there will be Roger's Random Raffle, cakes and goodies, refreshments and hot dogs for all the kids. Santa will be there to give presents to the children and if you bring your own dog dressed in a Christmas outfit you could win a prize! So put this in your diary, join in the fun, dress up Christmassy if you wish and let us know if you would like to be allocated one of

our dogs for the walk. Also if you are interested in having a stall, please contact Jacquie on 0034.697.122.883. We look forward to seeing you all there! If you would like to give a dog a home, or foster or sponsor an abandoned dog, please see www.Barkinside.es or if you feel you could host a fund raising event please call Jacquie on 697 122 883. All donations of money or items to sell at their boot fair, or towels and bowls for the dogs, would be gratefully received.

Stress By Chris Curran

Chris Curran holds a BSc(Hons) in Psychology from the University of Plymouth in the UK and is a trained Gestalt Therapist through IPETG Alicante, Spain.

I

n my last article, I wrote about how mental perception of potentially stressful life events (stressors) and having the wherewithal to be able to cope with them (resources) were key factors in the experience of what I call stress. I also touched on how the body reacts to stress and some of the effects of long term stress on the body. This week, I'm going explain some of the ways in which we can reduce stress levels practically. Some methods are very straightforward but it's not always easy and, as I highlighted in my last piece, for some people, may involve extremely tough decision making. I'll also touch on ways in which we can use our bodies to reduce stress levels. The first method I'd like to talk about is of particular interest to me as a Gestalt Therapist: emotional disclosure. As its name suggests, emotional disclosure is where emotions surrounding a particular life event are brought out in to the open. It's the opposite of emotional repression, where the associated emotions are “bottled up” or denied; this is also called repressive coping and is commonly found to be detrimental to health. Emotional disclosure can be done in a few ways. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a psychologist called Pennebaker developed a paradigm whereby writing for around fifteen minutes a day over a period of consecutive days about one's feelings regarding a problem or stressful

situation was shown to have long term benefits in reduced stress level and better immune functioning. I, however, favour a verbal approach. In my experience as a client, being able to say out loud how I genuinely feel about a given stressful situation is something I find immensely helpful. This can be done alone, literally “talking to oneself” or in the company of another person. I myself still attend a monthly session of therapy to keep myself in good shape for the work I do and I have complete faith that my therapist will never judge me and that she will allow me the space I need to disclose my feelings. Another reason I favour the verbal approach of emotional disclosure though, is because when I say the words I need to say out loud, I begin to take responsibility for the emotions I convey in them, which allows me to then accept that the responsibility for changing also lies with me. This is true for every one of us.

they consider a bodily position of fear and ask them to describe how it feels physically and emotionally in the moment, or, in what we Gestalt Therapists call “the here and now”. To some this may sound crazy! After all, why on earth would you want to deliberately come to see a therapist who asks you if you want to deliberately feel afraid? Well, the answer to that is

that the bodily expression of that fear (or whatever emotion they want to work with) in the here and now, not only provides an outlet for it in the present moment but invariably provides an insight in to underlying issues, some of which the person may not even be aware of. My personal experience both as patient and therapist has been that, from these insights, basic issues can be

addressed in our lives which in turn can allow us to reduce our overall stress levels long term. If you would like to find out more about how to address and change issues in your life, contact Chris Curran on 633 279 368 or email chris@talktochris.es

Another approach I encourage is what is known as expressed emotion, which is not to be confused with emotional disclosure. In expressed emotion, the client can use their body to act out the emotions they are feeling related to a stressor. Let's say that someone comes to me and says they are feeling fear (which is already a disclosure of emotion). I may ask them if they would like to express that fear and how they would like to do it. Sometimes, I ask clients to adopt what B U S I N E S S

Breakthrough treatment for acute atopic dermatitis The president of the Spanish Society of Clinical Allergology and Immunology (SEAIC), Dr JoaquĂn Sastre, has revealed that biological therapy to treat serious cases of acute atopic dermatitis, which have already received EU approval and will be available in Spanish hospitals in

two months' time, are going to "radically change the lives of patients". As Sastre explained, the prevalence of acute atopic dermatitis is "fortunately" very low, affecting only between 0.2 percent and 0.55 of the population, and yet it "destroys" the lives of those affected

because of the intense burning itchiness it causes on the skin. "Patients' quality of life is poor and distressing", said the doctor. What's more, it tends to appear on the face in young people during their twenties, causing psychological problems that can lead to insomnia, anxiety and depression, as well as a feeling of isolation. Two epidemiological studies carried out in Spain, however, have shown that these patients don't respond to normal topical treatments and need harsher medication like cortisone or even immunosuppressants. But now authorisation has been granted for the use of dupilumab, a biological treatment which is "radically changing the lives" of those affected. Dermatologists and allergists have already tried dupilumab with great success on a hundred or so patients and in a month or two it will be available in Spanish hospitals. Further treatments are under investigation but will be a while longer in reaching the market as they are not currently proving to be as effective as the biological therapies. Atopic dermatitis is on the increase and it is believed that living in an ever more aseptic world, where there are fewer infections to invade our bodies, means that our immune systems redirect their work from attacking now less common bacteria and microbes to producing autoimmune diseases and allergies. Antibacterial washing products, especially those used on children, are often blamed for this phenomenon and there is currently no means of preventing atopic dermatitis.

Huntington’s Disease Do you have Huntington's Disease or care for someone with this illness? If so, the Huntington's Disease Association Costa Blanca would like to hear from you. This is an independent, local charity offering friendship and support to people living in Spain suffering from, or caring for someone, with Huntington's Disease. It offers opportunities for friendship and support for all those affected in the Costa Blanca area. Although presently the association is based in Almoradi, it maintains contact with people living in the wider community. Currently it meets every Friday afternoon from 2pm until 4pm at O'Briens Bar in El Raso, Guardamar, for a drink and a chat. It provides information and access to advice about what is available to improve the quality of life for those affected, for example, equipment and aids to improve daily living. It has established links with other support groups, voluntary organisations and care agencies so that our Liaison Worker can share information about what is available and help you complete application forms. Through its successful monthly fundraising events it is able to award one off grants for equipment that may not be available through the Spanish care system - or financial support in an emergency situation for a limited period. For example it recently part funded an emergency six week support package for a couple, where the carer had suffered a debilitating injury. This ensured both could stay at home rather than the sufferer of Huntington's Disease going into a care home.

" The objective of the TOP 20 Program is to identify good practice patterns (benchmarks) and recognize the work of those centres that have obtained the best results in the evaluation process. Quirónsalud is the largest hospital group in Spain and the third in Europe. It

has more than 35,000 workers in more than 120 health centres, including 45 hospitals that offer 6,800 hospital beds. It has the most advanced technology and a large team of highly specialized professionals of international prestige. Among its centres are the Teknon Medical Center, Ruber Internacional, Quirónsalud University Hospital Madrid, Jiménez Díaz Foundation, Hospital Quirónsalud Barcelona, Dexeus University Hospital, Policlínica de Gipuzkoa, etc. The Group works in the promotion of teaching (eight of its hospitals are of the university) and medical-scientific research (it has the Health Research Institute of the

FJD, the only private research centre accredited by the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation). Likewise, its healthcare service is organized in transversal units and networks that allow optimizing the experience accumulated in the different centres and the clinical translation of their research. Currently, Quirónsalud is developing more than 1,600 research projects throughout Spain and many of its centres perform a leading role in this field, being pioneers in different specialties such as oncology, cardiology, endocrinology, gynaecology and neurology, among others.

Susan via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 10 and I am constantly getting messages that I am running out of disk space but I have had a good poke around File Explorer but I can’t see what it is that’s taking up so much space. Is there another way I can check to see what is taking up all the space on my hard disk? Aunty Says: Hello Susan. If you type STORAGE into the search box next to your Start icon and click on the top one in the list you should see a list of your drives, and from here you can investigate each drive. You can use this function to get an idea of what is taking up large amounts of space, and in most cases clearing up temporary files and moving large photos and video folder onto a USB external hard drive will free up loads of space. Peter from Cabo Roig asks: Hola Aunty, I’ve just realised that my laptop has Bluetooth already built into it and I’m told I can use this to transfer photos and also backup my phone onto my computer? I discovered I had Bluetooth accidently because I saw a small blue B icon in the bottom corner which I’d never

noticed but must have always been there so I clicked on it but how do I start the connection to my phone? I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 10 and a Samsung phone. Aunty Says: Hello Peter. If you click on the “Start” icon then the “settings” cog and then “devices” you will see “Bluetooth” listed in the left column. When you click on Bluetooth you will see some very self explanatory options where you can pair your laptop and phone ready to do a file transfer. Most modern laptops have a Bluetooth connection built in but if you don’t see the Bluetooth option it’s very easy to add a small USB dongle that will set you back less than €10.

Peter via email asks: Hello Aunty. A while back I remember you printing instructions on how to remove annoying adverts from the internet that keep popping up almost every day, some of them are quite rude. This has become almost unbearable in the last month as I have to completely close down Chrome and start again to get rid of them. I have had my laptop serviced by a shop in Villa Martin but if anything it was worse when I got it back and half of my apps had disappeared. The next place for it is the swimming pool so please can you help? I have a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7 Professional Aunty Says: Hi Peter. The two most important things you need to do is to first scan your computer with an updated version of the free Malwarebytes and then download and install a free plugin called Adblock Plus, both of which you can get from www.download.com. Maybe the shop simply restored your computer back to an earlier Windows restore point which probably wasn’t enough to fix an issue like this. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I’ll see what I can do.

Where to Stick the Stickers There are not many things allowed in the windscreen, but some are compulsory, so the question does sometimes come up as to where to stick them. You are not permitted to stick anything unauthorised in the windscreen, so things like For Sale signs are forbidden. Here is a list of things which are permitted. When we talk about the location of them, we are imagining ourselves sat in the vehicle, looking out. ITV Sticker (if required) To be placed in the upper right corner of the windscreen. Also, just one, the current sticker ONLY.

ECO Sticker To be placed in the bottom right corner. Shared Vehicle Sticker Used in some highly congested areas and allows vehicles, under certain conditions, to use special lanes for vehicles of high occupancy, VAO. Both the ECO and Shared Vehicle stickers have been incorporated into the latest changes to traffic law, of 2018. On the image, you can see on this vehicle (kindly loaned to us by Casas Espania) the location of the stickers, although in this case we are on the outside looking in.

How to Deal with Breakdowns The average age of vehicles on the roads of Spain is increasing, which is unfortunately going against the government’s hopes of reducing the age of the fleet, hence numerous subsidies to help older vehicle owners buy new. At the moment, the average age of vehicle is nearing 12 years, which not only means that many vehicles are not equipped with the latest safety features and technology, it also means they are more prone to breakdown. The good news is that most of the breakdowns are common faults, and in the worst case your insurance would cover recovery. However, it’s still not

pleasant when it happens, and so we can look at not only what to do if it does, but also how we can help to prevent such problems. If you do breakdown on the road, the first thing to remember is to stay calm. Then, you need to think about protecting yourself and your vehicle. Put on your high visibility vest and switch on your hazard lights. At night, you should also have your parking lights on, if possible. Remember next to place your emergency triangles. These have to be placed 50 metres from the rear of your vehicle if traffic is flowing in only one direction, and 50 metres from the front if

traffic flows in two directions. It is also important to ensure that your triangles are not only 50 metres away, but are visible from at least 100 metres, bearing in mind such obstructions as curves or the brow of a hill, for example. Now that you and your vehicle are protected, make a note of exactly where you are. Road signs and kilometre posts are important, or major landmarks. You will need to know your exact location because now you need to summon help from your insurance recovery company, or from the emergency services if needed. Remember, stay calm and protected at all times.

We said that most of the faults are common, and that we would look at prevention as well. Sadly, a lot of problems are caused by poor maintenance, such as with the brakes or suspension. Undiagnosed faults here can seriously reduce the stopping ability of a vehicle and can therefore be extremely dangerous. It is always best to get these systems checked by approved and qualified mechanics at authorised garages, such as Autos Direct in San Miguel de Salinas for example, who provide us with lots of information relating to maintenance, and will have a check of your car in their Bosch service centre. Lights are a common failure for older vehicles. These should be checked regularly, making sure that all lights are working, including brake lights and indicators. Some older cars do have bulbs which are easy to swap, which is one of their benefits, others may need a mechanic to assist. The electrical system can deteriorate with age and can be prone to failures. Although many faults may require a mechanic to repair, some can be repaired if they are simple, keep an eye on warning

lights on the dashboard and if there is any doubt, visit a qualified mechanic. The engine itself can also be prone to failures as it gets old. Sometimes the rubber seals become worn or damaged, so be aware of this, but you can and must check your oil levels on a regular basis and makes sure that there is nothing obviously wrong such as a leak. Tyres also deteriorate with age, and these must be changed if worn down. Damage can occur for many reasons and you can check the tyres yourself, looking for obvious signs of damage such as holes or knocks, and that the tread is even. By the way, Autos Direct have a little card which you can get for free to check the tread depth of your tyres, just call in and ask them for one (subject to availability of course), and search for “tyres” on n332.es for lots more information on how to check for problems. You must also keep tyres correctly inflated and check this on a regular basis. With a little bit of care and attention, increasing as the vehicle gets older, we can avoid a lot of problems, but if you do find yourself broken down remember to stay calm and always protect yourself first.

Great racing to a new format All week the weather forecast was showing high winds and rain for Sunday October 28th so it appeared that, yet again, the scheduled SAMM race day would have to be cancelled. But luckily this changed on Saturday to give a window of good conditions on Sunday so it was on! A new format “Average Lap Racing” was to be trialled. This requires all boats to sail as many laps as they can in a given time period, rather than completing a fixed number of laps. This offers many benefits for the great variety of boats that form the SAMM fleet. They all sail in the same conditions for the full race, the slower boats are not sailing around alone after the faster finish. All competitors get the same amount of race time on the water and are not waiting for slow boats to finish and the race day can be managed better. The Race Officer set a very short course and a 90 minute race duration for the morning race which started promptly at 11.30. It was a good start with four of the boats over the line together and the last within a minute. The W 12-15 knot wind made for some thrilling sailing and there were many close battles throughout the race, especially between the Arabel of Robert and Trefor and the Gamba of Vernon, John and Shanae, Vernon’s granddaughter on a visit from her home in Austria. Another battle royal was between the leading two boats, the Laser 2000 of Brian and Diane and the Topaz of Julian, with the lead changing between them on almost every lap. The course proved to be a bit too short in the conditions with the fastest boats

completing 11 laps and the slowest 8 laps. The winner on corrected time was Robert and Trefor in the Arabel. Towards the end of the race a there was a call from the beach asking that the SAMM support boat go to help a sailor in difficulty and, at the same time a small yacht, which had broken it’s very inadequate mooring, slowly drifted across the race course. In “people before boats mode” the support boat helped the sailor first and then took the yacht in tow back to the jetty at CTD. A bit of excitement for the helm Martin and his crew Sean and David and a chance for them to practice their skills. By the time the afternoon race started the wind had dropped a little and was NW 8-10 knots but with the occasional

stronger gust. The course was unchanged but the duration was reduced to 75 minutes. Again a good start, five of the fleet crossing in under 30 seconds but the Laser Radial and the Sailfish well behind and only started as the leaders were completing their first lap. Further close racing ensued but this time the Laser 2000 got the better of the Topaz and opened up a good lead. The shorter time and reduced wind strength meant that the lap count was between 4 and 9.The winner was the Gamba, much to the surprise of her crew. Everybody expressed their enjoyment of the new Average Lap format saying it added greatly to feeling that the battle for supremacy continued to the race finished.

Lo Crispin Golf Society Thirty two members and guests teed it up at Bonalba in the penultimate stableford competition of 2018. Given the amount of rain in thr preceeding 24 hours, we were probably fortunate to be playing at all. Buggies however were resticted to paths only and concessions were not afforded to those who would normally be entitled to a blue flag. This proved to annoy and frustrate may of our less mobile members, as they clearly found it tough going ! Apart from a few soggy areas the fairways were still quite firm, but balls were not running as far as usual. The consensus of many players on the day was that the the greens, and particularly the tee boxes were not in good condition. It was also somewhat surprising that the bunkers were not deemed unplayable by the course management, in view of the volume of water in many of them. For probably all the above mentioned reasons, the scores on the day were on the poor side. Those who were fortunate enough to receive a prize on the day, received them as usual at the Lo

Crispin Tavern, where we served tapas and looked after by the staff. The winners were as follows : Gold Division 1st. Place - Ron Perkins 30 pts. off 10 2nd. Place - Ron Stephenson 27 pts. off 12 3rd. Place - Martin Barker 26 pts. off 16 Silver Division Paul Flanaghan - 27 pts. off 23 Paddy Shea - 22 pts. off 24 Janet Candlin - 19 pts. off 33 N. T. All 32 members and 2 guests managed to find their way to Altorreal, north of Murcia, without mishap, a rare occurrence as usually at least one person ends up in Molina de Segura. So no frantic phone calls seeking directions for the day’s organisers, but just so they couldn’t rest on their laurels, tremendous confusion over buggy keys and how many had been given out related to the number needed. With this finally resolved, all players finally took to the course, a course which in fact buggies were not allowed on (with the obvious exception of the buggy paths) due to the heavy rains the day and night before. With a variety of clubs having to be carried across fairways, distance measurers then showing that the right club had not been included in those taken, a large number of members regretted buggying and wished they had walked. And for those that really did

require a buggy the constant need to walk left them tired, with some 90 degree fairway entrances taking place towards the end of a number of rounds. The very damp conditions were a main reason behind the generally poor scoring, with only 3 players breaking 30 points, but the course’s relatively long set up and recently hollow tined and sandied greens contributed. Chris Hamblett returned the day’s best score of 33 points, followed by Brian Mulligan on 32 and John Osbourne on 31, each winning their respective categories. Results, by Category and in reverse order were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd Mick Seymour (27), 2nd Charlie Harkin (28) and 1st Chris Hamblett with 33 points and the day’s best score. Worries from the weekend ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

There has to be some kind of relevant gag combining the time of year with how well both goalkeepers coped with crosses at the Emirates on Saturday night. You know, something that takes pumpkins and fireworks and cleverly works in how both Bernd Leno (and isn’t Bernd a great Bonfire Night name?) and Alisson were terrible at least once each when the ball was put in from wide. Unai Emery, a manager on his birthday who wouldn’t have had to have worked too hard to pull off a convincing Dracula, will have been delighted with how his Arsenal team managed to come away with a point, following an excellent goal from Alexandre Lacazette.

Alvaro Morata might be ‘mentally fragile’ according to his boss Maurizio Sarri, but he did score the double that helped Chelsea to a hard-fought 3-1 win over Crystal Palace. Mind you, he should have had a hat-trick if he hadn’t thought that another way to beat a 6ft 6 goalkeeper in Wayne Hennessy was to try and chip him. Are we allowed to say Tottenham are good, yet? Hang on, let me revise that. Are we allowed to say that Tottenham are good, providing they never, ever select Juan Foyth to play a proper match ever again? I’ve seen some dud debuts in my time, but this one smacked of a young man that followed Ray Winstone’s advice at half-time that 3-3 was a likely outcome at 50/1. We live in a world where Bournemouth leading and outplaying Manchester

League side to lose to Newcastle this season. Ayoze Perez got the goal after Watford missed more chances than I saw trick-or-treaters last week. Save of the weekend had to go, without doubt, to Cardiff City’s Sol Bamba. The only problem was, Sol was playing centre-half for Cardiff when he brilliantly kept out Jamie Vardy’s shot in a very emotional match being played in Wales.

City battered Southampton 6-1. Does anyone feel sorry for Mark Hughes? No? Didn’t think so. Talking about how Peppy G’s boys pulled another poor team to pieces is becoming a bit dull now but credit for Raheem Sterling for putting in a performance that even the Daily Mail must have scored at at least 9/10.

United at halftime is no longer a surprise. Equally, we live in a world where United are the masters of the comeback once again, where important goals get scored in injury-time and points get snatched. Anthony Martial continued his revival and then it was down to Marcus Rashford to end his birthday weekend with his first goal as a twenty-one-year-old. Joe Hart was letting goals in once more at the Athletics Stadium as Burnley were trounced 4-2 by West Ham United. There is every chance Sean Dyche could have the sexiest voice in the Championship next season at this rate. Javi Gracia’s self-proclaimed ‘best squad in the league’ didn’t really live up to that title, becoming the first Premier

Jurgen Klopp was correct in his assertation that anybody, including himself, who could head a ball would have taken all three of Virgil van Dijk’s chances; misses that meant Liverpool dropped two valuable points in the race to make the media at least pretend they think anyone other than Manchester City is winning the title this season. Quesada Bowls Club It has been another busy week, with many of our members playing in second round matches in our Club competition. Conditions have been challenging at times with a mixture of strong winds, some showers and rain but thankfully some sunshine as well. Meanwhile there have been some very good results for our squads in the leagues. In the Southern Alicante League Enterprise Division despite some tough battles, the Diamonds came up against a strong performance by the San Miguel Beagles, who won with 10-2 points and 123-52 shots. In the same division, the Pearls also had a battle on their hands against San Miguel Alsatians, but managed a victory of 8-4 points and 78-71 shots, maintaining their 2nd place in the league. And in the Discovery Division Quesada Rubies played Horadada falcons and despite very windy and chilly conditions, won the match 8-4 points and 89-83 shots. Our Winter league team put on a great

performance in a tough match this week to move them up into 1st place in the league. Playing away against La Marina they won the match 8-4 points and 82-81 shots. In the Southern League Division A, Quesada Swallows maintained their 2nd place in the league after a tight match against San Luis Lions, with 6 points each, Quesada just edging ahead with 78-75 shots. While in the Southern League Division B, Swifts hosted San Luis Leopards in an afternoon match. There were some close results on the rinks with one of our teams securing a draw on the last end! Overall the Swifts played extremely well to secure an 111 win and 105-63 shots. And in the same league, Quesada Swans hosted MonteMar Matadors, who won the match 8 points to 4 and 96-79 shots. Just a reminder about our popular Saturday morning

Lee Probert incredibly failed to see the Cardiff defender tip to ball on to the bar, brilliantly I might add, but it mattered not as Demarai Gray scored the goal that gave Leicester the win they craved following last weekend’s tragedy. Probert’s day got better when he booked the match winner for pulling off his shirt and revealing a tribute to his late boss. Once again, common sense seems to be missing at the most valuable of times. Finally today, that Richarlison lad at Everton looks like a total bargain. Las Ramblas Golf Society Our week kicked off with the best two scores from four players to count on each hole with all to contribute on the par 5’s. With 91 points, I was pleasantly surprised to be part of the winning team alongside Geoff Biggerstaff, John Drakesmith and his wife Ellen (Gin & Coke) Drakesmith. Wednesday’s windy conditions resulted in many low scores in our weekly Stableford. However, our latest recruit Trevor Pulleyblank, managed his first victory with a laudable 35 points. In second spot was Alan Douglas with 34 and John Collins took the bronze with 33 points. Only one ‘2’ today which also went to Trevor (so he’ll be eating steak tonight)! On Friday the second semi-final of our pairs match play took place with Bryan Neal and Liz Robertson making the line up in Monday’s final with a 2 & 1 win over Dave Pulling and Yvonne Phipps. An ‘interesting’ draw for our ‘Texas Scramble’ saw all our lowest handicappers grouped together, but they duly delivered with a gross score of 62! (Nett 59.7). With a total of 10 birdies, 8 of which were consecutive, congratulations go to Terry Field, Lindsay Forbes, Alan Douglas and Ron Phipps.

Mind you, it was on countback! Por ultimo, quote of the week goes to Jack Benny, ‘Give me the golf clubs, fresh air and a beautiful partner, and you can keep the clubs and the fresh air’. Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

The day raised 400 euros and thanks go to all members and guests who played and donated along the way. On to the results starting with nearest the pins sponsored by The Ale House

going to Graham Atchison, Russell Bailey, Phil Sully, Bob Price and Warren Harris. The 2's pot proved to be hard to win with only 3 successes Bob Price, Dave Shields and Tony Sims.....well done Guys. Our best lady of the day was Liz Thornton who collected her prize having scored 29pts. Trying to convince everyone he had a bad back was Colin Wilson’s excuse for being this events most challenged player with a measly 19pts but he received no sympathy and got a rousing reception collecting his reward!!!! Our Guest produced some of the best scores of the day with hard working Mick

On to Gold division the scoring appeared a little more challenging with Robert McDowell third with 31pts, Callam Hitcham second with 32pts just losing out to winner Andy Shaw with 33pts. Well done to everybody and once again thanks to all who donated to our chosen charity the British Legion...the biggest winner on the day. Next event is at La Torre in 2 weeks time and is already full but we do have a reserve list should anybody drop out so visit our website www.theplazagolfsociety.com to register for this and future events.

Well, there needs to be a first time for everything, doesn’t there?

If you find yourself with a spare 150 days or so, what do you do? I tell what I wouldn’t do; try and swim round the circumference of the UK. Ross Edgley did though and he encountered 33 jellyfish stings and a rotting tongue along the way. His biggest worry was not drowning though. No, it was not falling over in

Debate is still raging following England’s controversial victory over South Africa in the rugby. The controversy comes from Owen Farrell’s tackle in the final moments which some thought was bad but the referee thought was good, or something. Look, I’ll level with you. I get the bit where they score tries and kick the ball over the posts, but the finer details of rugby go over my head. But hey, when did you come here for actual analysis? England won and now have a delightfully sized bubble ready to be comprehensively burst by the All Blacks. I, for one, love anything that makes Australian cricket ripe for a bit of leg-pulling. And I’m with Shane Warne on this one. Warney has called all the buzz words and players pact (including some cracking phrases like ‘elite honesty’) a load of ‘verbal diarrhea’ and he is not wrong. You can have all the phrases and chat in the world, but to win a game of cricket you need eleven men, or women, capable of scoring more runs and taking more wickets than the other lot. And Australia, as they showed in a heavy defeat to South Africa, won’t have eleven players of that level until they next play the Ashes at home, I suspect.

front of all the cameras when he tried to walk for the first time in 1,791 miles. Priorities seem to be in place there. Edgley is clearly a bit odd, and fair play to him. The Loughborough University graduate has form when it comes to attempting the outlandish/stupid/genius. In recent years he’s climbed the height of Everest on a rope in one sitting, run a marathon while dragging a Mini behind him, and swum 100km (62 miles) in the Caribbean in just 32 hours while attached to a 100lb (45.4kg) log. Apparently he has a few other ideas still to do and I just hope he finishes them on a quiet week so I can report on them.
