Huge success for Costa Blanca People Defibrillator Campaign purred by many stories of lives that may have been saved if ambulances were earlier, road names clearer, equipment more comprehensive or emergency services locally based; in the summer the Costa Blanca People launched its Defibrillator Campaign. Our aim was to raise enough money to buy a defibrillator for each of the Local Police cars that patrol Orihuela Costa. The thinking behind our reasoning is simple; the local police are always called to the scene of any incident in the local community. As they know the area very well and are based locally, they are often the first to respond and arrive. For this reason, if officers arrive and there is a medical problem that involves someone’s heart, carrying a defib would allow the officers to save lives without having to wait for an ambulance to arrive. However, we soon realised it wasn’t

S

going to be quite as straight forward as we first thought. In the Valencian community only medical personal or members of the public who have been specially trained by a certified trainer can use defibrillators. Therefore, despite the fact all police officers are first aid trained, they would need further specialised training to carry the defibs on shift. Added to that, in order to cover shift patterns, holidays and sick leave a high number of officers would need training. Another hurdle was the defibs themselves. Each defib has to have a second battery, which are not included in the price. It is also necessary to have both adult and child pads and each machine has to be professionally maintained each year – all of course at additional cost. We spoke to a number of key figures and charities within the local community and soon had a great support for our campaign. Help Vega Baja donated €1500

which brought one of the defibs, a spare battery and extra pads and paid for part of the training for the police officers. We raised money at the 2018 Culinary Awards through a charity donation competition and Moneycorp rounded the figure up to allow us to buy another defib. The rest of the money to buy the remaining life-saving equipment, batteries, pads and training was raised by Help at Home Costa Blanca, in fact at a staggering €11,000 raised and collected by the charity an extra defib (so six in total) will be given to the Cruz Roja for its new ambulance that will operate across the Vega Baja. This is an amazing result and a fantastic end to our defib campaign and we are extremely grateful for the help and support shown to us by the community and in particular by these wonderful charities. The defibrillators are now on order and a meeting is being arranged to discuss the final details with the relevant Councillor and the Chief of the Local Police.

Tapas route El Gordo offers more Christmas prize money winners IT'S nearly that time of year again, no not Christmas but the El Gordo (the fat one) draw, Spain's most famous, most popular lottery and the one you have the greatest chance of winning! And fat is exactly what we’d all like our wallets and purses to look like after the annual draw on 22nd December. A full ticket costs €200, which is why most people, and syndicates, buy tenths of a ticket, known as a décimo, at €20 each. For a full ticket, the top prize is typically around four million, but as most jackpot winners will only have a décimo, they will take home around €400,000...which is still not to be sneezed at. Prizes given to fifth place, of which there are several, mean the chances of taking home a few hundred or even a few thousand are very high, compared with the usual weekly lotteries – such as the EuroMillions, where your chances of drawing the top ticket are in region of one in 114 million, or to put that into perspective much slimmer than being on board a passenger aircraft which crashes. This is why El Gordo is so popular – winnings are about enough to change a life short-term, even if it's just paying for a decent holiday, and winners themselves are numerous. Tradition dictates that the El Gordo numbers that will earn prizes are 'sung' by the choir of children at Madrid's San Ildefonso primary school on live TV as the number are out of the pool. Notaries

are always open on 23rd December even if it's a Sunday, so the lucky ticketholders can sign for their earnings. If you miss the El Gordo, even bigger prizes – but slimmer chances – are on the table for the El Niño draw on 6th January. This coincides with the national holiday for the Three Kings when Spanish children receive the bulk of their festive presents. Niño means 'child' so the name of this second-chance lottery is self-explanatory.

Tax man wins less in lotteries Six years ago, at the end of the first full calendar year of the former right-wing PP-led government, lottery winners had to pay tax on their prizes for the first time ever. Anyone who netted a million would, in practice, only pocket €800,000, although by December 2017, the first €2,500 were exempt from the 20 percent tax – admittedly, small fry if your winnings reach seven figures. However, under pressure from the opposition once in a minority, the PP government agreed to up the stakes: the first €10,000 is now tax-exempt, so if you hit the jackpot with the El Gordo, you'll only have to pay the State on the €390,000 out of your €400,000. In total, your winning décimo will be worth €322,000 after tax....still not to be sneezed at! Next year it get even better as from 1st January, 2019, the tax-exempt threshold goes up to €20,000, meaning

for the El Niño draw, only any winnings over this amount will attract a 20 percent retention. And from 1st January, 2020, the allowance doubles again, to €40,000 – so, by Christmas, the 2020 El Gordo means net third-prize winnings of €48,000 out of the gross €50,000 per décimo, whilst second-prize winners who scoop up €125,000 will take home €108,000 and jackpot décimo-holders will, out of their €400,000, be left with €328,000. The more generous lottery tax régime in 2020 does not make a huge difference, on paper, to those bagging the biggest prizes, but anyone who comes fourth or fifth in the El Gordo will be able to enjoy their winnings in full. In fact, the State lottery board says nearly 60 percent of prizes in all the draws carried out in Spain year-round will be tax-exempt from this coming 1st January – a figure that is likely to grow in another 12 months. The philosophy behind the higher tax thresholds is that, if someone wins the lottery – be it €6,000 or four million – they will surely spend it, meaning retailers, the property market and service providers will benefit and the State earns more in tax from them, or they will invest it, meaning the government will earn tax on the interest.

The results of the competition for the best tapas are now in and the councillor for tourism, Fanny Serrano, presented the prizes for this 16th tapas route in Torrevieja. Once again it had proved to be a very popular event with 10,000 passports being handed out altogether. Councillor Serrano congratulated all the participating restaurants for the high

come prizes for the people who take part with their passports. The first prize winner received a dinner tasting menu for four people at Luz de Mar as well as a night in a hotel in Granada with breakfast included for two people and two entrance tickets to the Alhambra. This prize was donated by The Valise travel agency. The second prize winner won a tasting

standard of tapas that was available. At the same time, she is keen to ensure that the event goes from strength to strength and asked for ideas for how it could be improved. Two winning dishes were chosen by the public and both came from Luz de Mar restaurant. In addition one dish was chosen by a jury. They chose the house tapas from La Gaviota and the gourmet tapas from Las Columnas. Along with prizes for the winning tapas

menu, 30 minutes on a jet ski, the opportunity to go parasailing and a trip to the Salinas on the tourist train for four people. The third prize winner won a meal and a mobile telephone from torrevieja.com. The fourthprize winner won a meal and a voucher for a spa sessionfor two people at the Hotel La Laguna and a tour of the traditional fishing industry in the town. The final winners won a €200 voucher to spend in Habaneras shopping centre. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Guardamar expat NEWS: pensioners arrested for A middle-aged woman was moved to Torrevieja hospital on 10th September suffering from serious injuries after an accident on la avenida Diego Ramírez Pastor in Torrevieja. The accident happened at 4.35 in the afternoon when the woman, who was driving one of the two vehicles involved, was trapped beneath one of them. She was conscious but had an injury to the head. The Local Police are now investigating. It’s believed that one of the cars involved was parked at the time.

Associations deck the streets When it comes to Christmas decorations it’s good to have all the help you can get, even if you are a town hall. This year, the streets of Torrevieja are looking particularly cheerful thanks to the contributions of a number of different organisations. The students of ALPE school are just one of those groups who have been decorating the main streets of the town with their own ideas. In this case the students have made their own contributions under the title ‘Cuento de Navidad’ or ‘Christmas Tale’. Their display can be seen at the intersection between Concepción Street and Canónigo Torres. The tourism employment workshop has created the project ‘Reci- Christmas’ with the theme of recycling using plastic bottle to represent snowflakes. Their ideas can be seen on calle Concepción. AFA, the Alzheimer’s association have decorated the side of the town’s indoor market with ‘Tejiendo nuestro mundo’ or ‘Weaving our world’. Other contributors include La Asociación Bolillos, ASIMEPP and ‘Madrileños en Torrevieja’. Each group has created their own contribution to help decorate the streets at this important time of year.

Night race in Torrevieja On Saturday 15th December the sixth ‘Night Run’ around the streets in the centre of Torrevieja took place. It involved more than 500 runners taking part in a festive mood. ‘La Carrera Nocturna de La Purísima’ included two circuits with a total of 8.3 kilometres around the Paseo Vista Alegre and de la Libertad. Many of the runners were dressed in festive gear including Father Christmas hats and costumes and some brought their dogs along too. Continued on page 5

More trouble with the pool Torrevieja’s indoor swimming pool is once more in the spotlight as the council continues to have to carry out repairs. Now work is being carried out to repair the main circulation pipe. It is a complex process that requires the pool to be closed as the pipe is the one which connects the boilers with the pool and the sanitation system. This means that again that the town’s swimmers are without their municipal pool during a holiday period. It is hoped that the pool will be open again to the public on December 27th.

Lucia. The pair were arrested in a targeted raid by Portuguese police on 4th December 4, who boarded the cruise liner as it docked in Lisbon. Vitor Ananais, who led the operation for the Policia Judiciaria, said: “We knew who were looking for and boarded the cruise ship with a search warrant.” He described how nine kilograms of cocaine, with a reported street value of £2 million were found inside the couple’s cabin, hidden in false bottoms of their suitcases. According to reports Roger bragged about buying cheap luggage to fellow guests on board the Marco Polo, saying he’d paid just $200 for four suitcases that would have cost £1,500 in Harrods. Susan, 70, was understood to have stayed on the boat while her husband went onshore. The cocaine was intercepted at the ship’s penultimate stop, rather than at its final docking point of Tilbury, Essex. Portuguese police chief Vitor Ananais said: “We acted when we did rather than wait for a possible handover because we wanted to protect the investigation and

found with a hidden quantity of drugs. The expat pensioners were able to leave the country when they were released on bail but were later extradited back to Norway where they were put on trial and given substantial prison sentences. Roger was jailed for five years while his wife Sue, was given a four-year sentence. Sue - who was rushed to a Portuguese hospital on Thursday for high blood pressure - served three years in a Norwegian jail before being transferred back to the UK where the remainder of her time was behind bars at Holloway prison in North London. Sue was transferred back to prison on Friday after spending the night in hospital. Susan has lived as an ex-pat in Spain with Roger, her second husband, for the past 15 years. The couple have a three bedroom villa in El Raso after it is alleged she 'abandoned' her family to begin a new life with Roger. While living in Spain the pensioners made no secret of their love of cruising – particularly to the Caribbean. Their latest cruise, which cost £6,000, was due to end in Tilbury.

Increased Police checks this week Police across Spain will intensify their roadside spot-checks from now in the run up to the festive holiday’s as people plan pre-Christmas party’s and celebrations, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has announced. The ramping up of the blood alcohol and drug tests come as driving under the influence is expected to surge in the run up to Christmas. Some additional 20,000 tests will be carried out every DAY this week, on all types of road. Pere Navarro, general director of the DGT, said: “The objective of this type of campaign is to make citizens aware that not only is alcohol incompatible with driving, but other drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines and opiates are psychoactive substances which are lethal behind the wheel “. Some 26 per cent of drivers killed in collisions last year tested positive for

illegal alcohol blood levels.

Punishments for driving under the influence: • The Road Safety law states those driving while over the legal alcohol limit will be fined €500 and lose four points from their licence. • If it is the second time within a year or the driver tests positive for double the limit allowed, they will be fined €1,000. • Drivers who test positive for drugs will be fined €1,000 and lose six points from their licence. • The punishment does not include medications which have been prescribed by a doctor • Police can impose higher fines or take away your licence if the alcohol or drug rate is particularly high (above 0.6 milligrams per litre).

BITE SIZE SUMA to collect NEWS: plusvalía in Torrevieja Continued from page 3 The run was organised by the Club Atletismo de Torrevieja and was a circuit with the start and finish line being in the Plaza de la Constitución. There were both young and senior runners and almost 200 volunteers helped to make the run a success. The winner for the second year running was the Moroccan, Hassane Ahouchar, second was Jarkko Jarvenpaa from Finland and in third position was the British man, Stuart Spencer.

Traffic calming removed Some of the raised ‘sleeping policemen’ that were installed to slow down traffic are being removed. This is following complaints about the damage they do to cars and other vehicles and the fact that they hold up emergency services too. There are nine places where the presence of these raised surfaces are considered to be dangerous rather than beneficial. These include, Avenida del Agua, calle Sauce, avenida Desiderio Rodríguez and next to the ramp by Playa de los Naúfragos. These are all considered to be routes used frequently by emergency services. The raised surfaces also cause problems for lorries and two-wheeled vehicles. At these particular points, the raised area is higher than that recommended and is insufficiently marked out to warn drivers that it’s there.

For the past year the collection of the plusvalía tax has been frozen in Torrevieja. Now it looks as though SUMA are about to begin collecting it again. Plusvalía is the tax collected by the town hall in the municipality where a property is located and is paid by the seller when a property is sold. The amount of this tax to pay depends onthe land’s cadastral (rateable) value and an estimated increase in the land’s worth since it was first purchased. However, it has caused controversy recently as many people selling property have not made a profit on the sale but still the plusvalía has been applied. In Torrevieja the collection of the tax was suspended whilst legal proceedings aimed to clarify what the position was in collecting this tax. Now the legal uncertainties appear to have been dealt with and SUMA will continue to require the tax payments. It is estimated that the amount that they will seek to draw in could be as much as seven million

euros in the past three months. The plusvalía tax is one of the most important sources of income for town halls. During the embargo on its collection they have struggled to find the missing money in their budgets. In Torrevieja it’s believed that the plusvalía represents 19% of the budget income in 2015 and 2016, a total of around 18 million euros. With its collection frozen in 2017, it’s estimated that around 8.7 million euros was no longer available. The only tax to make more money for the town hall is that of IBI or council tax. The friezing of the tax has particularly affected those municipalities that rely heavily on the buying and selling of second hand property. The tax stopped being collected in the middle of 2017 when there was uncertainty about its legality, given that many sellers had not made any profit on their property. Now it looks, at least in the short term, that sellers can expect to start paying it again. Suzanne O’Connell

A successful night of carols in the square

How safe are our stores? Following the attacks on shop workers in Torrevieja those trading in the town centre have questioned the level of security there is. The attacks, which happened on 12th and 30th November, came as a shock to those working in different outlets. One of the attacks resulted in a shop assistant in a supermarket being taken to hospital with a serious injury. He had been stabbed after he challenged a thief. Fortunately, the supermarket worker has now recovered but the incident has caused much disquiet amongst those carrying out similar jobs in the city centre. Apymeco is the association for small and medium-sized shops and businesses. They are concerned that their members are more and more vulnerable to criminals, drug sellers and those begging for money. Since the two attacks they feel that insufficient measures have been taken to prevent such incidents from happening again. They are asking for more police officers to be routinely visible in the town centre. Whether this should be the Local Police or Guardia Civil is not clarified.

Hospital’s efficiency debate continues We’ve had contrasting reports about just how cost effective Torrevieja’s state hospital really is. On the one hand, auditors have suggested that it is performing very well in comparison with other hospitals, whilst some other groups suggest that the statistics are not telling the truth. Now the political group Ciudadanos (Cs) has joined the Continued on page 8

Once again the Torrevieja Christmas Carol concert in the square was a lovely evening and just right for bringing on the Christmas spirit. This was the eighteenth year running that the event has been organised by the town hall and at 5.30pm on 14th December, people were congregating in the square to sing along to the Phoenix International Concert Band. Many choirs turned up to lead the singing and local politicians, including the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, were there to join in. Councillor Carmen Morate, and Gloria Grimshaw were involved in putting the evening together and the Costa Blanca People made sure that the lyrics were available for those who wanted to sing along too. It’s thought that more than a thousand people attended this international event with the British and Scandinavian population of Torrevieja being particularly well represented. The church la Inmaculada Concepción provided the perfect Christmas backdrop and people also had chance to stop by and take a look at the Belén Christmas scene which is currently on display in the plaza. Gloria Grimshaw from the Phoenix Concert Band was delighted by the

evening and the number of compliments that the band and choirs received. It was a team effort with Councillor Carmen Morate organising the bubble and snow machine and the market stalls and making sure that the event was publicised. Carlos Gonzales also deserves a mention from the town hall for organising the lighting, sound and chairs. ‘I would like to thank all the musicians and singers who came,’ says Gloria, ‘and, of course, the public who turned out to join in the singing and donated so generously to the charity APANEE.’ APANEE is the charity for children with special needs. They also took this opportunity to display their 2019 calendar which has been prepared in conjunction with the Guardia Civil. The musicians and singers included the Phoenix International Concert Band, U3A, Velvetones, Crescendo, Andante, Cantabile, TAABS, De Costa Shanty’s as well as some others who preferred to mingle with the crowd. Over for another year, it just remains to count the money taken in the collection and hope that the weather is as kind to the organisers next year too. Suzanne O’Connell

Hondón Valley RBL The AGM of the Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion was a well attended evening, with both a new President and Chairman being elected. The President is Lt Col Peter Lodge MBE and he gave a very interesting and poignant speech on his time in the Army and commended the Legion for its work with those leaving the Armed Forces and suffering from PTSD; just one thread of the Legion’s support for its beneficiaries. The Chairman, Neil Pavitt remarked on an amazing year, commencing with a District Award for Recruiting new members. In August he and Roger Kingham, as Branch Standard Bearer, attended the GP90 Commemoration Ceremony in Belgium; and he then talked of all the social activities and fund raising events of the year. Neil paid tribute to the Committee and all the members who had helped support the Branch during the year in so many differing ways. The Branch members showed their pride by loudly applauding our Standard which now displays the Ypres Scroll – being one of only two Branches in the whole of Spain who attended the event, the other Branch being Mojacar.

The Christmas meeting will be held at The Fogon Restaurant in Hondón de los Frailes and for information regarding this or other Branch activities, please either visit the website: www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/hondon-valley or contact the secretary on hondonvalley.secretary@rbl.community. PROBLEMS WITH THE THREE KINGS CONTRACTS La Cabalgata de Reyes is the procession that accompanies the Three Kings when they arrive in Torrevieja on their boat and walk around the streets. It’s a very popular event and one that’s attended by many families with young children on 5th December. This year it will go ahead as normal but without the proper contracts that should accompany it. The lack of contracts is being put down to an error within the technical team responsible and is now being investigated. Councillor Fanny Serrano explained that the process had been started nine months ago in April and there had been plenty of time to make sure that

proper procedures had been followed. The contract for the procession is worth €92,898 with VAT included and now a file has been opened to discover why the contracting process was never completed. The Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos de Torrevieja is carried out, with or without contract, by the same company that has been organising events in Torrevieja for many years. The money pays for the rental of four floats, the contracting of six street show, the purchase of two thousand kilos of sweets, the rental of costumes and the installation and dismantling of barriers. The players were entertained during the lunch by ukulele players who practice at the Las Filipinas Social Centre and provided a great atmosphere for the occasion.

The winner of the competition was Linda Ashworth who was presented with her prize by Councillors Noelia Torres and Sole Soto from the Ayuntamiento de San Miguel. The cheque for 654 euros was presented to Stevie Spit by Ray Sanderson, Chairman of the Las Filipinas Petanca Club who thanked Stevie for attending. He gave a brief outline of the need for donations. Stevie said: “The money will be used to buy much needed mattresses for the Orphanage. Some of which will be delivered the tomorrow morning (11th December).” Stevie has been raising money for the mattress campaign for several months and

hosts the Wednesday charity market at the Emerald Isle to raise money for the San Jose Obrero Orphanage and Elche children’s home. Ray Sanderson wished to thank the Ayuntamiento de San Miguel, Enrique, manager of the Filipinas Centro Social, the centre's ukulele players, the local businesses who had given raffle prizes and donations, the Las Filipinas Petanca club committee for all of their hard work and the members who had given so generously to make it such a successful day.

BITE SIZE Crowdfunding NEWS: campaign for Continued from page 5 discussion in support of this private/ public model of healthcare which is claimed to have saved more than 45 million euros. The hospital is managed by Ribera Salud and it was them who invited the councillors to an information day. Now both Cs and the PP continue to defend the hospital management mix of private and public. Disagreeing with their evaluation of its effectiveness are the unions and the health department itself. They suggest that the audit’s analysis does

not compare like with like and that some of the costs of the hospital are hidden as patients are attending private hospitals for their treatment.

Lo Ferrís The protest group Salvemos Lo Ferrís has started a crowdfunding campaign to pay court costs. They are fighting to protect one of the last pieces of undeveloped coastal areas in Torrevieja. They need to raise €6,666 and if they are successful in their bid and the money is returned then it will be used to fund further campaigns to protect this area. Salvemos Lo Ferrís are now calling on

If you would like to make a donation to the campaign you can from this website on the page www.goteo.org/project/salvemos-loferris. They have only 40 days in which to collect a minimum amount of €3,000. Donations can also be used against Spanish tax. Any donation is discounted automatically in the annual rental tax to

all those interested in preserving the heritage of the town to contribute. ‘Help us to meet the expenses of legal defence following a criminal complaint lodged against one of us whilst fighting to protect Lo Ferrís natural park.’ They had denounced those responsible for fencing off a road that they claim is a public road and can be used for the movement of livestock. The project they are engaging in is described on the website www.goteo.org which is an environmental website

an amount between 30 and 75%. There are also incentives that include occasional ‘rewards’ such as membership, t-shirts, stickers and photographs of the area. The organisation states: ‘we have worked hard in order to protect this unique natural park. Now, one of us is facing a complaint from the company that has fenced off the area about a denuncia that was made. This was a legitimate way of exercising our rights and ensuring freedom of speech.’ Suzanne O’Connell

More trouble for Torrevieja’s Local Police A jury may be asked to investigate the allegations that some police officers from Torrevieja, including an exinspector, were tampering with fines and guilty of using their influence in an illegal way. Magistrates made the decision following evidence of possible embezzlement of public funds. The case goes back to 2012 when three police officers patrolling la avenida de Rosa Mazón and la calle María Humildad Jiménez, witnessed a car ignoring a traffic signal. The car was stopped and a fine issued but the driver was uncooperative. She indicated that she would sign the denuncia but would not be paying the fine but would be calling someone she

knew about it. SUMA, the tax agency who also collect fines issued by the police, never received the fine which apparently had ‘disappeared’. At this time there was a poor level of security around the processing of sanctions and rumours were circulating that some fines were disappearing off the system. Further evidence that fines were being improperly processed has been retrieved from the computer system. An expert has reported that there was a manipulation of the system with fines being removed in some cases. Now this case could come before a jury six years after the complaint was first made. Spain’s Prime Minister warns he ‘will Blitz on not renegotiate’ May’s Brexit deal flyposting Spain’s president Pedro Sánchez has warned the UK government he will 'not renegotiate' the Brexit deal presented by Theresa May. Using his speech to refer obliquely to Catalunya, Sánchez said the Brexit vote has 'taught us valuable lessons we need to learn from', including 'strengthening democracy in the face of lies'. For the Spanish president, both Brexit and the Catalunya independence bid are 'phenomena which are following parallel paths based upon fallacies', and his spokeswoman Adriana Lastra says Brexit and Catalunya are 'the consequence of irresponsible policies being pushed forwards'. Sánchez already stated a few months back that he felt Theresa May should call a 'second' referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union – although in practice, this would be a third referendum, since the first was in 1974 when Britain voted to join. He does not support Brexit, although he feels it may provide opportunities for Spain and the rest of the EU – as has been seen with the shifting of European medicines, banking and space associations to the continent – and says if Brexit really is on the cards, Mrs May's deal is 'the only one possible' as it 'safeguards citizens' rights'. But Sánchez warns the UK to 'be prepared' for a nodeal scenario; although he promised Spain would 'help out where it could' if this were to be the case. “As you all know, the British Parliament has postponed the vote on the deal, but Spain's position is not going to change,” Sánchez said in Congress. He blamed Theresa May's predecessor, exConservative leader David Cameron, for calling the referendum on 23rd June, 2016: “His decision has plunged the UK into a disconcerting situation.” Both Sánchez's party, the PSOE and their political allies, Podemos, say Brexit is the result of 'a rise in the far right' in Europe, and Podemos' leader Pablo Iglesias said it has come in response to 'a lack of alternatives to anti-social policies'.

Although Iglesias supports Sánchez's stance – particularly concerning Gibraltar, whereby Spain is required to have a say on any issues affecting its policies, trade or economy – he says Theresa May's deal is 'not a good one'. It 'puts the interests of big fortunes before those of the ordinary people',

Iglesias says. Alberto Garzón, leader of United Left, also considers Brexit to be a symptom of the 'rise in the far right' in Europe, and fears the UK's departure may also be a clear sign of 'the EU's process of falling apart'. By 'falling apart', he means the increase in the presence of alt-right political parties – something Spain has escaped since the end of Franco's dictatorship until now. The alt-right independent party Vox has just gained 12 seats in Andalucía's regional government out of a total of 110, although this is the only one of 17 regions where it currently has a foothold, meaning the threat does not seem to be as great as in other parts of Europe. Right-wing PP leader Pablo Casado and centreright Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera have both accused Sánchez of 'missing an opportunity' to get Spain's claws deeper into Gibraltar – despite the Gibraltarians having always expressed their wish to remain British – but neither alluded to the consequences of Brexit or any other aspects of Theresa May's deal.

Flyposting is the process of advertising in places where you do not have official permission. You see many walls and billboards that are taken over by posters whose businesses have not paid for the privilege. Now the town hall in Torrevieja is clamping down on the practice. Torrevieja has handed out 111 fines for breaches of local laws when it comes to advertising. These include to companies

who have used walls, fences and other places to post their advertisements without permission. SUMA is the tax collection agency who is pursuing the breaches that amount up to €46,862. In eight of the cases the fines have had to be reduced because the business agreed to comply with the law once tracked down. Billboard advertising is only allowed in specific areas. Another 52 of the files opened against companies have had to be archived because of the length of time it has taken to pursue the case. Chasing up the people responsible is not an easy matter and requires human resources. Suzanne O’Connell

Tricks used by airlines to avoid compensation payments According to a leading passenger compensation company, Airhelp, some airlines are increasing scheduled flight times in order to avoid paying compensation to passengers who are delayed. The company is basing the claims on a study by the British consumer organisation WHICH, who report that despite the development of technology, some air routes are currently 35 minutes slower than before. Specifically, some of the companies that appear to be slowing down are British Airways, EasyJet and Ryanair, and by doing so, the flights appear to be within the scheduled arrival, or even early at times, when the reality is the flights could have been delayed if the actual route flying time was measured. AirHelp, the leading online platform that helps travellers obtain compensation for delays, cancellations or denied boarding, has studied the routes on which the airlines have extended flight times. With this practice, airlines are avoiding paying millions to affected passengers, which they are entitled to. In fact, so far in 2018, airlines have saved more than 4 million euro by using these techniques, or, to put it another way, delayed passengers have been denied 4 million euro in compensation. Paloma Salmeron, director of global communications AirHelp, explains that “many airlines try to make it increasingly more difficult to enforce a claim, and tactics to extend the flight time is another way to reduce the chances that

passengers can submit a claim and receive financial compensation for the inconvenience they have suffered.” The airlines that carry out this practice save more money each year; in 2015, 1.5 million euro was saved; in 2016, 2 million euro and last year the number rose to 4 million euro. So far in 2018, the amount has already exceeded 4 million, for a total of more than 11 million euro that airlines are avoiding paying compensation for delayed flights. “There are many more flights, which often means more congestion and flight delays. But it is also true that modern aircraft can travel slower to consume less fuel. For this reason, it makes sense that airlines operating more modern aircraft extend flights, and with this tactic avoid paying the additional costs of compensation for flight delays,” says Salmeron. As indicated in European legislation, if airlines are responsible for delays of more than three hours, or cancellations or denied boarding, they will have to pay

compensation of up to 600 euro per person. The requirement for this is that the airport of departure or arrival must be within the European Union. In addition, the airline must be responsible for this delay. In these cases, the passenger is entitled to make a claim within a maximum period of three years from the date of the incident. In extraordinary circumstances such as storms or medical emergencies, the airline is exempt from the obligation to compensate passengers. In the event that the delay exceeds two hours, airlines are also obliged to provide passengers with meals, free drinks, and access to communication and even accommodation, if necessary. To request the corresponding claim, passengers can use the free AirHelp application available from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. For more information or check the air right to compensation, you can visit: www.airhelp.com

New charity shop opens its doors in Los Alcazares

Asociación Únicos has opened its new fundraising shop on the Oasis Bulevar in Los Alcázares. Headed up by Luisa Garcia Ramos, the Asociación Unicos volunteers were out in full force for the inauguration, greeting customers, new and old. “Our shop is vital in our fundraising efforts to keep up our work with the abandoned dogs in our care” commented Luisa. “Without the generosity of the public with donations and purchases, we would struggle to feed and care for our dogs, so we are very grateful for the support of our customers”. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00am until 2.00pm and has a wide range of clothes, accessories, jewellery, household goods, furniture, bric-a-brac and more. Why not pay it a visit or donate your unwanted clothes, furniture and items to show your support, call 608 239 333 for more information. WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Two major factors helped shape the euro's week: politics and the European Central Bank. In the end they cancelled each other out and the euro was unchanged against its most important benchmark, the US dollar. It took more than a cent off the wobbling British pound. The Brexit story and the tribulations of Britain's prime minister more than once dragged down the euro in sterling's wake. On the upside, Italy's government caved in to EC demands that it aim for a smaller budget deficit in 2019. The target is now 2.04% instead of 2.40%. At Thursday’s press conference ECB president Mario Draghi was expected to confirm the end of the bank's asset purchase "quantitative easing" programme. The announcement could have sent the euro higher, given that it means a tightening of policy. Yet Sig. Draghi's language was carefully dovish, such that the euro actually lost ground during his presentation. USD weekly currency update The dollar got off to a difficult start last Friday, held back by some disappointing US employment data. Nonfarm payrolls went up by only 155k in November, significantly fewer than the 200k forecast by analysts. Together with revisions to earlier months the overall shortfall was 57k jobs and investors were forced to wonder if the US economy might be running out of steam. The only other important data were for inflation, which was in line with expectations and uncontroversial at 2.2%. In Washington there were positive words from the president. The economy is "doing really well", the Federal Reserve chairman is "great" and trade talks are going on with China and the EU. As if to confirm the latter, China placed an order for up to 1.5m tons of US soybeans. There is a sense that, at least for now, Trump is holding his fire in the trade war. The dollar was unchanged against the euro and one and a third cents firmer against sterling. CAD weekly currency update The Loonie was top dog among the major currencies, strengthening by an average of 0.6%. It was only a dozen ticks ahead of the USD but added two cents against sterling. See-sawing oil prices complicated the picture for Canada. The OPEC meeting could not agree on a cut in production; then it could; then some members dissented. WTI crude rose and fell repeatedly across a range of up to 8%, eventually adding a net 2% on the week.

Swan Lake Tchaikovsky’s magical ballet tells the story of the doomed love of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette. Prince Siegfried goes out hunting one night and chases a group of swans – one of them transforms into a young woman, Odette, who explains that she and her companions were turned into swans by the evil Baron Von Rothbart. The spell can only be broken if someone who has never loved before swears an oath of undying love and promises to marry her. The Prince declares his love to Odette and promises to be loyal forever. At a grand reception at the palace, the Prince must choose a bride – but he can think only of Odette. Suddenly a fanfare announces the arrival of two guests – it is Odette! The prince dances with her and asks for her hand in marriage. But it’s not Odette – the mystery woman is the daughter of the evil von Rothbart, Odile. Odette has witnessed the whole scene. Too late, Siegfried realises his mistake. Siegfried follows Odette to the lake and begs her forgiveness. She says she forgives him but nothing can change the fact he broke his vow. They decide to die together. The lovers throw themselves into the lake. This Friday, 21st December, a crew of 40 elite dancers will perform Swan Lake in Torrevieja’s Auditorium, offering local audiences the chance to see this wonderful ballet performed at a fantastic venue. LAST CHANCE TO WIN TICKETS With thanks to the Auditorio de Torrevieja, the Costa Blanca People has three pairs of tickets to give away! To be in with your chance to win, simply answer the following question before the closing date (Wednesday, 19th December, 4pm): What is the name of the princess? Email your answer to office@costablancapeople.com (please mark the subject – Swan Lake Competition) and ensure to include your name and contact number. T&Cs apply.

The main advantages for the Canadian dollar were a great set of employment data last Friday and a more emollient tone on trade from the White House. Canadian unemployment fell to a record low of 5.6% as a record 91.4k jobs were created in November. The effect of the numbers was enhanced by the woolly employment figures from the States, which emerged at the same time. AUD weekly currency update External factors played a far greater part in the Aussie's fortunes than did any domestic data or news. Australian mortgage lending was up by a useful 2.2% in October even as it was reported that house prices had fallen by 1.5% in the third quarter. Business and consumer confidence were both softer than expected. The data were far from sparkling yet the Aussie held its own in the middle of the major currency field. It lost a third of a US cent and strengthened by a cent against sterling. The mood music on trade from Washington was much less harsh than usual, tempting investors to believe that the trade war truce might develop into something more permanent. That was positive for the Aussie but the currency took a big step backwards this Friday morning when China released the figures for retail sales and industrial production. Both were considerably softer than expected. GBP weekly currency update Sterling did not have quite as bad a week as the South Africa rand but with an average loss of 0.6% that was of scant consolation for the pound's supporters. It lost more than a cent each to the Swiss franc and euro and a cent and a third to the US dollar. Although the UK economic data told a mixed message - weak production and trade, strong employment and earnings - they were not the main factor in the pound's decline. It was of course Brexit-related issues that did the damage. First, the prime minister withdrew her withdrawal bill from the Commons in anticipation that the house would vote it down. Second, the parliamentary Conservative party chose to bring a motion of no confidence, which Theresa May won with a 63%-37% majority. Third, Mrs May came away from a European Council meeting with no improvement on the terms of the Brexit bill which parliament will almost certainly reject.

Seagate Wealth Management

Keeping it local M

any people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of supervision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but on‐going support and monitoring of the investments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental principles: the strength of the relationship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meetings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up to date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are performing. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control.

If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transfer ring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

Welcome to ANCONA with Vivalia Travel Ancona is the capital of the Italian region called Marche. It is an important port city on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Most of its medieval centre was bombed during World War II.

I

ts cathedral, however, is set on the mountain overlooking Ancona and still worth a look. There is also a monument built by Mussolini on the waterfront. It offers glorious vistas on the coastline with mainly flat sandy beaches. The popular resorts of Portonovo, Sirolo, and Santa Maria di Badia are at the Mount’s base. Many ferries link Ancona, and therefore Italy, to Croatia, Greece and Turkey. Moving around the city The few tourist attractions located in Ancona’s historic town center are easily navigated on foot. The city also boasts several cobblestoned pedestrian streets, which are not only closed to traffic, but are also very picturesque and the perfect place for a stroll. Rental bicycles are also readily available and the town’s buses, normally used by locals commuting to and from work, are another easy way to get around the city. Ancona Cathedral. Attractive Ancona Cathedral stands on the Guasco hill overlooking the city’s port and offers amazing views of

Ancona and the Adriatic coast. The wooden roof of the 11th century Cathedral is actually in the shape of an upside-down boat and its most obvious feature is the 12-sided cupola. The Cathedral is actually built on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Venus and you can still see some of the ruins underneath the church. Arch of Traiano. The marble Arch of Trajan, 18m high, erected in 114/115 as an entrance to the causeway atop the harbour wall in honour of the emperor who had made the harbour, is one of the finest Roman monuments in the Marche. Most of its original bronze enrichments have disappeared. It stands on a high podium approached by a wide flight of steps. Lazzaretto. The Lazzaretto (Laemocomium or “Mole Vanvitelliana”), planned by architect Luigi Vanvitelli in 1732 is a pentagonal building covering more than 20,000m², built to protect the military defensive authorities from the risk of contagious diseases eventually reaching the town with the ships.

Also, Corso Garibaldi is the main street in the city centre with several luxury shops. Outside the city there are numerous commercial centres. There are a few good places in Ancona where visitors can shop for local products. In Ancona the food markets are very colorful and lively and have a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and sea food for purchase. One thing Ancona does well is food products. There are good quality olive oils, cheeses, breads, pastries and cakes available in food stores throughout the city. Visitors can also purchase red and white wines from the region in the wine shops of Ancona. Eat and drink The majority of restaurants in Ancona serve local cuisine and dishes that are unique to the region. Being a port town means that good seafood is readily available and definitely worth trying. There are also many good cafes and bakeries in the city where visitors can sample local desserts and traditional breads and pastries.

Sharing time between our parents Thrown together at Christmas My parents got divorced earlier this year after dad had an affair. With Christmas looming we don’t know what to do about sharing our time with both parents. Dad has moved in with the woman he cheated with, and mum has not taken any of it well. My brother, sister and I all still live at home. Dad wants us to come for one day. We want to see dad, but mum will go ballistic. What do we do?

Another Christmas is approaching and yet again I am dreading sitting around the table having to endure my nasty sister-in-law and her husband. My husband and I have always felt like sitting targets in their company. My husband admitted recently that his stomach is in knots at the thought of having to confront them again. We’ve had an invitation to spend Christmas day with my brother who has recently moved back home from Canada. We’ve talked to my husband’s parents about it, and they say they don’t mind if we don’t go this year.

As the injured party, and if your mother is still feeling delicate, I would suggest you spend as much time as you can with her on the important days over the holidays. Your Dad should understand. However you can choose a day after Christmas to be with your father. The first year is always going to be the hardest, and in time your mum should come to terms with the fact that you need to also see your dad, but for now the transition needs to be done slowly and mindfully.

You may not be able to choose your family or extended family but you can definitely choose how much time you spend together. Getting together with loved ones at Christmas time should be a happy and relaxed experience. If you’ve had the go ahead from your husband’s parents to be excused, then go. Leave the nasty people to have a deflated Christmas this year. And as for forthcoming years, book a week away on holiday and avoid it altogether.

Humanitarian visas proposed for refugees Europe should produce 'humanitarian visas' for potential refugees to keep them out of the hands of the mafia, says a Spanish MEP. Juan Fernando López Aguilar, from the PSOE (socialists) – the same party currently in government in Spain – says migrants who would normally put their lives and life's savings at risk to travel to Europe on dangerous, unseaworthy crafts or succumb to the false promises of human traffickers ought to be able to request an emergency entry card from embassies or Consulates representing EU member States. These 'humanitarian visas' would allow them entry to European territory so they could apply for asylum. Historically, would-be asylum seekers have had little choice but to enter countries illegally since there is no legitimate way of their doing so, and national authorities recognise this in accordance with the terms of the 1955 Geneva Convention on refugees, meaning 'unlawful' entry to a third State is not normally considered a criminal offence where a person's intention is to apply for asylum. Entering a country 'illegally' is often only possible with the help of criminal organisations, including traffickers, whose practices are responsible for thousands of lives lost in transit. “The number of deaths in the Mediterranean is unacceptable,” López Aguilar says. Europe's budget for handling the migrant crisis has doubled this year, and the fact that MEPs voted in favour is 'a major political sign', López Aguilar considers, since it 'helps provide a more human response' to the issue. “Around 90 percent of people granted asylum in Europe have entered the continent illegally,” the Spanish MEP quotes.

“Since the year 2000, over 30,000 have died trying to reach our shores. We need to establish legal and safe methods to allow them to get here, and it's clear we have lots to do in order to help them.” 'Humanitarian visas' would not automatically allow migrants to arrive in Europe and stay put, but would let them get there safely so they apply for refugee status, which may be granted or denied as immigration authorities see fit. The idea is that, as the migrants intend to travel to Europe anyway and will do whatever it takes to reach the continent in a bid for a better quality of life – or simply to survive, if they are escaping war or persecution – it is crucial to give them a safe way of getting there rather than allowing them to risk drowning, or being forced into sexual slavery. López Aguilar's proposal won 429 votes in favour to 194 against, with 41 MEPs abstaining. The photograph shows a rescue mission by the Spanish refugee charity ProemAid, carrying migrants in the Mediterranean to safety on the Greek island of Lesbos.

s 2018 is drawing to a close, the local property market has proven to be highly successful. Buyers have still been fulfilling their lifelong dreams to own a property here, with their priorities being somewhere safe, in the sun and only a short flight away! Although the market slowed down towards the end of this year, it was still the British buyers that led the way. Even with Brexit, the attitude remains the same as “Que sera, sera!” Cash or credit? Throughout 2018 property sales have been mainly cash deals, with only a mere 5% wanting to go down the mortgage route. Holiday or relocation? In general, most buyers have been purchasing holiday homes, with 40% joining us here permanently. In summary, the housing market remains strong, with the hopes it will carry on into the New Year.

Selling your home? Enjoy the journey! Thank you for reading my blog throughout the year! Wishing you all, a very Merry Christmas & New Year! Much love to you all. Susanna Reid insists she 'feels more energetic than ever' since shedding two stone by going teetotal... but admits she 'might fancy vodka shots on NYE' She's been flaunting her incredible weight loss since ditching alcohol for over two months. And Susanna Reid has insisted she feels more sharper and energetic than ever as she continues to embrace her new lifestyle. While the Good Morning Britain star, 48, recently celebrated 100 days sober, she admitted she 'might fancy some vodka shots' as the festive New Year celebrations draw closer. 'It is more than 100 days since I last

touched alcohol and I feel clearer, sharper, and more energetic than ever', The news anchor, who recently embarked on a new romance with Crystal Palace boss Steve Parish, also credited her weight loss to putting a stop to snacking. She added: 'It's certainly helped me not least because I have get up so early and it doesn't help when you feel as if you are in a constant state of jet lag.' Despite previously admitting she's 'having fun' without booze, Susanna admitted she could potentially break her alcohol-free run during the festive season. The brunette elaborated: 'I might fancy some vodka shots [on New Year's Eve] but then again I might feel like I can keep going. The truth is I don't know, but at the moment it's working for me.' On Good Morning Britain earlier this month, Susanna, whose doctor warned she was at the 'top end of the BMI', credited boxer Tyson Fury with helping her to shed the last few pounds after embarking on a new health regime. While it's fantastic that Susanna has embraced a healthier lifestyle, it's fair to say that she has never appeared to be overweight.

Sir Paul McCartney joins Noel Gallagher and Chris Martin at Mick Jagger's party... just days after Beatles star's ÂŁ10million home is burgled His ÂŁ10million home was recently broken into just days before his homecoming gig in Liverpool. Yet Sir Paul McCartney put the drama behind him as he joined the likes of Noel Gallagher and Chris Martin at Mick Jagger's party on Thursday night in London. The Beatles star, 76, cut a stylish figure for the evening celebrations as he represented his daughter Stella McCartney's fashion label. Paul wore a blue and white grandad collar shirt with a black shirt and an oversized dark parka jacket over the top with his child's brand logo on it. The singer appeared in good spirits as he smiled to photographers and made an 'ok' sign with his hands. Also attending the bash was Noel Gallagher who looked equally stylish in a pair of black skinny trousers, a mustard yellow corduroy jacket and white shirt. Meanwhile, Chris Martin wore a more casual ensemble of dark trousers, a knitted jumper, an oversized grey scarf and a black beanie hat.

Has Clint Eastwood made his best film yet at the age of 88? Critics heap praise on the director's newest flick, The Mule, saying it shows he is STILL the hardest working man in Hollywood. The Mule is the 88-year-old's second movie release this year following The 15:17 to Paris Eastwood acts and directs himself in this, his 37th feature, of a 63 year career. He plays Earl Stone who becomes a unlikely drug's mule for The Cartel after falling on hard times financially. The majority of critics have

applauded the movie - one calling it 'Clint Eastwood's Best Movie in More than 25 Years' Eastwood's latest film, out in theaters on Friday, is an adaptation of a New York Times article by Sam Dolnick that tells the improbable tale of Leo Sharp, an 87-year-old World War II veteran who became one of the most prolific cocaine traffickers for the Sinaloa drug cartel. While Eastwood, who plays the leading role of the drug mule whose name in the film is Earl Stone, is not playing a version of himself, the Associated Press writes that 'it's hard not to appreciate, and be moved by, the film's many echoes for the filmmaker.' The review, which awards the Warner Bros.-produced flick 3 out of 4 stars, points to some 'curious parallels' between the character of Stone, a Korean War veteran, and Eastwood, like his troubled relationship with his ex-wife and grown daughter, his attitude towards modern technology and his struggle to find a place for himself in an America that is rapidly changing. Stone is a divorced horticulturist from Illinois. Stone's specialty is the daylily, a fragile flower that blooms for 24 hours a year.

AGE CONCERN BRINGS CHRISTMAS CHEER

The Rascals and Age Concern at Rojales’ Residential Home Every Friday, Irene Harrison and the Residential Home Volunteer Team take some of the residents of a local residential home out for a stroll. The Residencia 3a Edad Mediterraneo in Rojales is home to many international residents who value Age Concern volunteers taking them out for a walk or in their wheel chairs into the town. They might stop for a coffee and have opportunity to chat and see what’s going on in the world outside the home. At the beginning of December, Age Concern also has a tradition of bringing some extra Christmas cheer into the home itself. This year it was Friday 7th that saw the vocal group The Rascals entertaining the residents in the huge courtyard with

Christmas carols. People of all nationalities sang along to the mixture of English and Spanish songs. They were particularly delighted to here Rosario, one of the volunteers, singing along to her acoustic guitar. The residents were treated to a nonalcoholic drink and a selection of cakes and biscuits whilst waiting for the arrival of Papa Noel who gave everyone a Christmas card and gift, kindly donated by The Rascals. The Master of Ceremonies for the occasion was Megan who had dressed as a pantomime dame adding to the Christmas spirit. It was an afternoon that everyone will remember. Suzanne O’Connell

IMF TELLS SPAIN TO KEEP AN EYE ON RISING HOUSING PRICES

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is calling on Spain to monitor the price of real estate following a rebound of the property market after years of crisis. After analysing late 2017 statistics, the global agency has detected early signs of “a slight overvaluation,” although it stressed that there is still nothing like a new housing bubble in Spain. “Even though there is no clear evidence so far of a generalized house price overvaluation, it is critical that the Bank of Spain has a comprehensive toolkit at its disposal so that it can act promptly should misalignments emerge,” says the IMF in its annual report on Spain. “House prices have increased in recent years, although from a low level and without signs of a construction boom. While there is no clear evidence of a significant price misalignment yet, the authorities need to be vigilant. The set of macro-prudential tools should be expanded to deal with potential financial stability risks,” write the analysts in a side box to the report titled “Developments in the Housing Market: Already a Cause of Concern?” The IMF finds that house prices increased by around 15 percent between 2014 and 2017, but that sales are being driven by existing housing stock rather than new housing. Another change from pre-crisis days is that the home ownership rate has dropped from 80 percent to 77 percent as people increasingly turn to the rental market.

The Spanish economy is showing nothing like the kind of effervescence that drove the speculative debt bubble prior to 2008. Rising home prices are not being matched by a rise in credit flows. Private debt levels are not growing and the exterior balance is positive. Gone are the days when Spain was borrowing around €100 billion a year, fundamentally to fund the purchase of overvalued homes. But analysts are nevertheless concerned about the new upward trend of housing prices, which could lead to excessive trust and a relaxation of loanapplication requirements and building criteria. Additionally, household savings levels are at historic lows as homeowners believe themselves to be wealthier. “One should never underestimate the

speed at which these processes gain traction,” said a high-ranking government official. The IMF report notes that “banks are highly exposed to real estate sector developments, and therefore the macroprudential toolkit should be expanded to deal with risks associated with that exposure.” This means that Spanish supervisors should be granted new powers to limit mortgage approvals based on the value of the home, the borrower’s income or the payment deadlines. The Socialist Party (PSOE) administration of Pedro Sánchez is currently working on a decree to give the Bank of Spain these powers. The IMF has been telling Spain for years to create an agency to monitor systemic risks, or in other words, to assess financial hazards in order to prevent imbalances and bubbles. Now that the property market is picking up speed again, there is an added sense of urgency. The previous Popular Party (PP) administration delayed the creation of this oversight body, but current Economy Minister Nadia Calviño has a blueprint on her desk for an agency that would bring together the Bank of Spain, the CNMV national securities watchdog and the Economy Ministry. Under the proposed terms, the Bank of Spain would gain the power to rein in the concession of loans and tighten conditions for mortgage approvals.

Spain is least culturally arrogant country in Europe Only one in five Spaniards regard their traditions and cultural exports as superior to others. Carried out by the Pew Research Centre between 2015 and 2017, the study found that only 20 percent of Spaniards believed their culture was superior’ to others. This compared to a shocking 89 percent in Greece, and 47 percent among their neighbours in Portugal and 46 percent in the UK. However, whether they chose to do so or not, the Spanish have many reasons to blow their own trumpet ... Food As any global gourmet will tell you, Spanish cuisine is up there with the best. And that’s not just the famous Mediterranean diet that is helping to maintain the Spanish as the second longest living race in the world. Globally famous chefs including David Munoz, Eneko Atxa and Martin Berasategui not only hold three Michelin stars here in Spain, but have their own restaurants in the global food capital of London. In addition, the country that made tapas go viral is also home to some of the best wines in the world in Ribera del Duero, Rioja and, of course, in Jerez, where according to the world’s most famous wine critic Robert Parker, there are half a dozen 100 out of 100 wines. And let’s not forget jamon Iberico, bluefin tuna and Sanlucar prawns.

Art, literature and fashion Ask anyone in the world to name a great artist off the top of their head and Picasso’s name is likely to come up first. And what about Goya and Velazquez and 20th century artists like Dali and Miro? The history books are bulging with Spanish artists and writers, such as Cervantes, the so-called Spanish Shakespeare who is considered one of the greatest writers of all time, with Don Quixote being his best know work. Then there’s impressionist painter Joaquin Sorolla, composer Manuel de Falla and hip designers like Alejandro Palomo and Balenciaga. Architecture The Romans started it and the Moors continued the tradition creating wonderful architectural masterpieces in Spain. Granada’s Alhambra Palace, Cordoba’s mosque and Sevilla’s cathedral, the third largest in the world, are among the heritage treasures on offer. Whilst the country’s 20th century creativity has left Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum, the Metropol in Sevilla and the Oscar Niemeyer Cultural Centre in Avilés. History The Iberian Peninsula has an incredible heritage from the Tartars to the Greeks and the Romans to the Arabs ... every one of these civilisations has left its mark on Spain. From culture to entirely new towns,

visitors have made Spain diversity personified and all Spanish people have a little bit of their DNA. That may be why Spain is the only place in the world where the three monotheistic cultures cohabited peacefully: Christians, Muslims and Jews back in the days of Al Andalus. Spanish culture went on to found the amazing cities of Los Angeles, Miami, Mexico City and Buenos Aires and Spain was once known as the ‘Empire where the sun never sets’ for its vast colonies stretching east to west.

eminent studies into what keeps us so healthy. The long list includes the Med Diet, the low suicide rate and the excellent health service, with hospitals making major breakthroughs in genetics and transplants. Spain invests around €1,000 million annually on cancer research. The great weather also has an influence, creating outgoing citizens who enjoy busier social lives. While the streets of northern Europe are dead past 22.00, Spain’s are full of life.

Tolerance The Inquisition aside, Spain’s diverse history has made it one of the most tolerant countries not just in Europe but the world. It was the fourth country to legalise gay marriage, with 77 percent of Spanish in favour of it. Unlike Germany or Hungary it is also one of the most tolerant towards Muslims. One of the biggest Jewish communities in Europe is on Costa del Sol and the extreme right has almost no political representation, despite an alarming worldwide growth trend. Spaniards even make jokes about their own national flag!

Social Achievements The Spanish have always been well aware of their rights and have fought bravely to achieve them. The Second Republic in the 1930s, for example, was one of the first governments to give women the right to vote, thanks to activists like Clara Campoamor. Students and workers struggled against Franco’s dictatorship but even after democracy, people gave their lives to achieve the status of Autonomous Communities for their regions. The birth of the 15M movement which caused a political earthquake, questioning the bipartisan model, shows what Spaniards can achieve.

Health Spaniards have one of the longest average life expectancies in the world, at 83 years. And there have been many

Nature A road trip throughout Spain shows us a land with thousand faces: the dense forests of the Basque Country and Galicia,

the majestic mountains of Asturias and Catalunya, the bright blue Costa del Sol sea, the vast plateau of Castilla La Mancha, the lunar landscapes of Almeria ... the list goes on and on. The country also has the world’s rarest wildcat the lynx, while boasting flamingos, wolves and Griffon vultures. It also has the largest area of protected parkland in Europe. Technology Many Spanish inventions have become household names, including the famous candy ‘chupa chups’ and the mop. But did you know the wheelchair also has Spanish DNA, and the disposable syringe. The first submarine was also conceived here in 1888. And the list goes on in the 21st century with the country helping to build the desert AVE, a train that travels across Saudi Arabia from Medina to Mecca. At almost 500 km long and running through inhospitable desert terrain, it was a major challenge. Folklore Flamenco may well be the best-known genre of Spanish folklore and while it deserves the spotlight, there are others that should take a bow. Every region has its own identity, manifested in its diverse folklore: these include the Castells or human castles from Catalonia, the Jotas in Aragon, and the celebrated Carnaval in Cadiz.

BREXIT PUSHES MORE BRITS TO APPLY FOR SPANISH CITIZENSHIP

An increasing number of British people have applied for Spanish nationality since the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a process known as Brexit. According to data from Spain’s General Department for Registries and Notaries, 166 Britons requested Spanish citizenship in the first 10 months of 2018. While the number is low compared to the 10,067 requests from Moroccans and 2,001 from Venezuelans, it is more than triple the 50 requests made by British nationals in 2015, the year before the Brexit referendum. This puts Britons in fourth place on the list of EU members who want Spanish citizenship, coming in after Romanians, Italians and Bulgarians. The General Department for Registries and Notaries warns that the data is not comprehensive, as it does not include

applications filed in person. But while the figures may be partial, experts believe they show a clear trend. In 2015, the UK ranked seventh in number of applications, tied with Germany. This year it is in fourth position and it is the only EU country to show a rise in requests for Spanish citizenship in the past three years. More British people live in Spain than in any other country in the EU. This community of 250,000 has dropped significantly since its peak of almost 400,000 due to the fall of the pound against the euro, which affected the purchasing power of British pensioners living in Spain. Statistics have also been updated. Uncertainty continues to weigh over the future of British people living in Spain, with the Draft Withdrawal Agreement

drawn up by British Prime Minister Theresa May and the European Union hanging in doubt and the option of a soft Brexit on 30 March looking more unlikely. When the UK leaves the EU, British citizens will no longer be able to vote in or run for municipal or European elections on 26th May, 2019. This will affect 37 British councillors who are currently in office (19 in the Valencia region, eight in Andalusia and the rest in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia). British politicians represent 43.5 percent of all foreigners elected in the 2015 municipal elections, according to data put together by centre-right party Ciudadanos. Even more of an issue for British migrants is conserving the right to

residency, work and healthcare. Although these will be protected under the Withdrawal Agreement (if it is approved), the only way of completely guaranteeing the benefits associated with belonging to the EU is to acquire nationality or residency from an EU country. Spain allows dual nationality for people from Latin America and other countries with a historic link to Spain such as Equatorial Guinea or the Philippines, as well as Portugal and Andorra. But this does not apply to the UK. In theory, British people who want to become Spanish must renounce their citizenship, but in practice there is little control over those who keep both their passports. The Justice Ministry admits there is a huge backlog of citizenship applications (more than 400,000 are still pending) and

has put together an action plan to tackle the problem. Fewer Britons buying houses in Spain British people continue to purchase more homes in Spain than any other foreign buyers. According to data from the Association of Registrars, 15 percent of properties bought by foreigners were purchased by British people between the last quarter of 2017 and the first three quarters of 2018. This, however, is almost six percentage points below 2015 figures when Britons accounted for 21.34 percent of home purchases by non-Spaniards.

Charity music lunch for AECC Spain loses €90 billion due to corruption Pride of Spain finalist Pat Milligan hosted a music event for the Albatera AECC at Frasquitin Restaurant with Roberto The Voice singing. Altogether €1645 was presented to the AECC cancer charity - €780 was from the afternoon itself and in addition, Albatera residents hosted a charity walk which raised €680 as well as donation of €185 from the Catral Ladies. The Catral Ladies had also previously donated €115 which brought their total contribution to €300. Pat told the Costa Blanca People, “Everyone enjoyed the afternoon and presented the sponsored walkers and myself with framed certificates.

We had many prizes for the raffle, with the Albatera ladies making lovely Christmassy hampers.”

Pat’s next event is Woody for ECCH on Feb 20th tickets €5 (with lunch €12) call 693 063 293.

Spain loses a staggering €90 billion a year because of political corruption, new figures have revealed. It is the fourth most corrupt country in the EU losing some 8 percent of its gross domestic profit, a study by Verdes en la Eurocamara shows. According to the study, the UK loses 2.3 percent of its GDP on corruption - the second lowest figure in the EU, along with Denmark and Luxembourg, while the Netherlands is officially the least corrupt using 0.76 percent. Spain follows Italy (€237 billion), France (more than €120 billion) and Germany (€104 billion), while corruption costs the EU €904 billion annually. The €90 billion euros Spain has to pay for corruption is four times the budget allocated for unemployed benefits, more than 90 percent of annual health funds and 88 percent of pension payouts. The news will infuriate the likes of Andalucia, where residents have been demanding much needed investment

into its lacklustre infrastructure and travel networks. Spain has seen dozens of high case corruption cases since it became a democracy in the 1978. The ERE scandal in Andalucia saw almost €1 billion stolen by leaders of the Junta. The decade-long scandal saw politicians from the socialist-run government divert public money from an €855 million fund meant for unemployed and retired workers. Other scandals like the Gurtel saw dozens of Partido Popular leaders accused of taking more than €450 million in backhanders in return for rewarding construction contracts and other favours. It was the first time a sitting prime minister was forced to sit in the dock as Mariano Rajoy was questioned over his knowledge of the slush fund.

HELP Vega Baja sing its way to success

Help always on hand

Christmas sing along “You know Christmas was near when it’s the HELP Vega Baja Christmas” - this was what one of the visitors to the fayre told the President of HELP Vega Baja at their annual fayre which was held recently. In addition to the usual fantastic array of quality clothing and other items on sale including: raffles, tombola and of course the very popular home bake stall, this year people were entertained by the “Enthusiasticals” singing group. Everyone was taken down memory lane with songs of years gone by with many people joining in. Modern technology also gave the opportunity for the fayre and the singing to go “live” on Facebook! The new addition to the charity, the Connections Team, which offers 24 hour emotional support to all members of the community had representatives at the fayre and were kept busy on the day in a separate area away from the hustle and bustle of the fayre. President Michele Masson said: “The 2018 fayre has been a great success. With more than 2,600 euros

raised before costs, this is a magnificent amount to achieve and we are very grateful to everyone who came along to support us. Our volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went well on the day. We would also like to thank all the wonderful sponsors that contributed to the grand raffle. The money that has been raised will now go towards supporting people in the community who are struggling and need support. We are delighted to say that so far this year we have donated in the region of 42,000 euros to good causes, including individuals and other charities which is a remarkable achievement. On behalf of the HELP Vega Baja committee I would like to thank everyone for the support we have received throughout the year and to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year.” To find out more about the work that HELP Vega Baja does to support people in the community visit their website at www.helpvegabaja.com or their Facebook page. The Connections Team 24 hour confidential emotional support helpline can be contacted on 965 021 552.

FANTASTIC YEAR FOR TOP COSTA BLANCA GOLFER

2018 represented an impressive return to form for former European Tour member and Challenge Tour golfer Jordan Gibb. The Englishman finished 2nd in the Order of Merit of the PGA Spain Seve Ballesteros Tour courtesy of 3 runners up finishes, a 4th place in the Spanish National Championship and a 5th place in the Grand Final in just 8 events. The year began on a high with a 2nd place finish in Ciudad Real with a 3 round total of 15 under par including a 9 under par final round. Rounds of 68-72-66 were enough for 4th place in Burgos while rounds of 73-67-67 (-9) earned Gibb a 2nd place finish in Bom Successo, Portugal. The Vistabella Golf Professional also came close in Pozoblanco, a matchplay event with the 64 top ranked golfers in Spain, where he fought through a tough group and won 4 matches before losing 1 down in the final. Jordan was also the model of consistency in the

Valencian Circuit, again finishing 2nd in the end of year rankings with one victory at Villaitana, Benidorm with a score of 68 and 3 second place finishes including the 2 day final where he missed out by one shot with scores of 70 and 68. Other notable results included a 3 shot win on the Almeria Pro Tour with a 66 at Playa Serena and a top 10 finish in the star studded field at the Invitational Pro Am in Quinta do Lago. Jordan shot 68-70-72 to finish in a tie for 7th with Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley and a couple of strokes behind 3 time European Tour winner Bradley Dredge. While Jordan admits to feeling a slight irritation at narrowly missing out on a couple more wins, he is delighted with the year’s performance as a whole, in particular his scoring average of 69.8. “It is probably my best season to date, even including the year I achieved my European/Challenge Tour card. It is the first year in some time that I have been able to play a fairly full schedule without too many work commitments and it showed. Hopefully through the winter, I can sharpen up a few little details and push on even more and get back to playing on the European Tour”. Jordan has just launched his new website www.jordangibbgolf.com where you can follow his progress, see his latest coaching offers at Vistabella, find sponsor opportunities and keep up to date with special JG Club offers including regular member days and tournament golf breaks. We want to wish Jordan all the best for 2019. Keep up the good work.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ... With Christmas just around the corner, we thought we would write a festive feature to put you in the mood to celebrate, as well as shed a little light on the history and traditions of the festive season. With a look at the big day, advent, epiphany, carols and cards we’ve got Christmas wrapped up! Christmas Day Although December 25th is the date when most people celebrate Christmas, there are some other dates as well. Some Orthodox churches use a different calendar for their religious celebrations. Orthodox Churches in Russia, Serbia, Jerusalem, Ukraine, Ethiopia and other countries use the old Julian calendar and people in those churches celebrate Christmas on 7th January. Advent Before Christmas, many Christians use the time of Advent to prepare themselves and get ready to celebrate Christmas, when Christians celebrate of the birth of Jesus, who they believe is the Son of God. Advent is normally a period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. During Advent many people fast, not eating certain foods. The types of food people give up depends on their church tradition and where in the world they live. The 12 Days of Christmas & Epiphany Traditionally, Christmas celebrations and often a feast started on Christmas Day and lasted for 12 Days - so they were known as The 12 Days of Christmas. The celebrations finished on the evening of 5th January, which is better known as Twelfth Night. Throughout history, the 12

Days of Christmas were a time of feasting and fun. Following Twelfth Night, on 6th January, is Epiphany, when people remember the Wise Men, also sometimes called the Three Kings, who visited Jesus when he was a baby and the Baptism of Jesus when he was an adult. Epiphany/Twelfth Night is also the time when it was traditional to take your Christmas decorations down. Christmas or Xmas? Christmas is also sometimes known as Xmas, which has always been a bone of contention with some people believing that to call Christmas Xmas takes the Christ or Jesus out of Christmas. Particularly because Christmas comes from Christ-Mass, the Church service that celebrated the birth of Jesus. However, in the Greek language and alphabet, the letter that looks like an X is the Greek letter chi/Χ (pronounced kye rhyming with eye) which is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Christos. The early church used the first two letters of Christos in the Greek alphabet chi and rho to create a monogram (symbol) to represent the name of Jesus. This looks like an X with a small p on the top: ☧ The symbol of a fish is sometimes used by Christians (you might see a fish sticker on a car or someone wearing a little fish badge). This comes from the time when the first Christians had to meet in secret or risk death at the, as the Romans wanted to kill them (before Emperor Constantine became hands of the Romans. Jesus had said that he wanted to make his followers Fishers of Men so people started to use that symbol.

When two Christians met, one person drew half a basic fish shape (often using their foot in the dust on the ground) and the other person drew the other half of the fish. The Greek word for fish is Ikthusor Ichthys. There are five Greek letters in the word. It can also make up a sentence of Christian beliefs Ie-sous Christos Theou Huios So-te-r which in English means Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour. The second letter of these five letter is X or Christos. Therefore, Xmas can also mean Christmas; but it should also be pronounced Christmas rather than exmas. Christmas carols Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were not Christmas Carols. They were pagan songs, sung at the Winter Solstice celebrations as people danced round stone circles. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, usually taking place around 22nd December. The word Carol actually means dance or a song of praise and joy. Carols used to be written and sung during all four seasons, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has really survived. Early Christians took over the pagan solstice celebrations for Christmas and gave people Christian songs to sing instead of pagan ones. In 129, a Roman Bishop said that a song called Angel’s Hymn should be sung at a Christmas service in Rome. Another famous early Christmas Hymn was written in 760, by Comas of Jerusalem, for the Greek Orthodox Church. Soon after this many composers all over Europe started to write Christmas carols. However, not many

people liked them as they were all written and sung in Latin, a language that the normal people couldn't understand. This was changed by St. Francis of Assisi when, in 1223, he started his Nativity Plays in Italy. The people in the plays sang songs or canticles that told the story during the plays. Sometimes, the choruses of these new carols were in Latin, but normally they were all in a language that the people watching the play could understand and join in. The new carols spread to France, Spain, Germany and other European countries. Most Carols from this time and the Elizabethan period are untrue stories, very loosely based on the Christmas story, about the holy family and were seen as entertaining rather than religious songs. They were usually sung in homes rather than in churches. Travelling singers or Minstrels started singing these carols and the words were changed for the local people wherever they were travelling. One carols that changed like this is I Saw Three Ships. When Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans came to power in England in 1647, the celebration of Christmas and singing carols was stopped. However, the carols survived as people still sang them in secret. Carols remained mainly unsung until Victorian times, when two men called William Sandys and Davis Gilbert collected lots of old Christmas music from villages in England. Christmas cards The custom of sending Christmas cards was started in the UK in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. He was a senior civil servant who had helped set-up the new Public Record

Office - now called the Post Office - and wondered how it could be used more by ordinary people. Sir Henry had the idea of Christmas Cards with his friend John Horsley, who was an artist. They designed the first card and sold them for 1 shilling each. The card had three panels. The outer two panels showed people caring for the poor and in the centre panel was a family having a large Christmas dinner. About 1000 were printed and sold. The original cards were advertised with the slogan: Just published, a Christmas Congratulations Card; or picture emblematical of old English festivity to perpetuate kind recollections between dear friends. The first postal service that ordinary people could use was started in 1840 when the first Penny Post public postal deliveries began. The new Post Office was able to offer a Penny stamp because new railways were being built. These could carry much more post than the horse and carriage that had been used before. Cards became even more popular in the UK when they could be posted in an unsealed envelope for one halfpenny half the price of an ordinary letter. As printing methods improved, Christmas cards became much more popular and were produced in large numbers from about 1860. In 1870 the cost of sending a post card, and also Christmas cards, dropped to half a penny. This meant even more people were able to send cards. By the early 1900s, the custom had spread over Europe and had become especially popular in Germany.

The regeneration of Molino del Agua park The Paraje Natural Municipal del Molino del Agua is in need of some restoration. In order to ensure the improvement of the area, ANSE (la Asociación de Naturalistas del Sureste), Agamed and Torrevieja town hall have agreed to continue to join forces to replenish the vegetation and restore plant life there. The park consists of 20 hectares some of which includes dunes and this is one area that the collaborators are looking to repair. Pine trees were destroyed by fire and the project includes reforestation in the area. The continued collaboration was announced by Councillor Fanny Serrano along with the managing director of Agamed, José Manuel Nadal. ANSE is an environmental organisation who provide specialist advice on what should be done to preserve the area. ‘The planting we are doing now,’ explained biologist Jorge Sánchez, ‘is a continuation of what we’d started in previous years.’ In particular the associations are focussing on the recuperation of some plant species that had

disappeared such as sea carrots (zanahoriamaritima) andjuniper. The regeneration is taking place in the area affected by the fires a few years ago whichdestroyed around 10,000 square metres. The replanting has been made possible because now the burnt wood that had littered the area has been removed. The intention is to help restore the dunes to

how they were originally. Work will also take place to remove invasive species such as the common reed. The dunes have a purpose beyond being an area of natural interest. They are also used to help replace sand on the beaches following storms. Local school children have been taking part in the restoration work. For example secondary school Mare Nostrum involved some of their students

who would like to work in careers such as gardening and environmental restoration. Pedro García is a spokesperson for ANSE and has congratulated the town hall on taking the issue of the local environment seriously. ‘We have to restore this natural park and help it become a public space,’ he explained. ‘This requires money, but often it’s less than people imagine. What’s needed is the resolve for people to do things.’ Councillor Fanny Serrano referred in the press conference to the collaboration there has been between the town hall and Agamed since the localgovernment elections. Now two biologists are helping them ensure that the correct balance is found and that any proposed work is appropriate and beneficial. ‘These actions are part of a whole strategy,’ explained councillor Serrano, ‘aimed at converting our town into a reference points for environmental and sustainable tourism.’ One of the more recent activities has beenthe erection of barriers in order to prevent people from walking over protected areas in the park. Number of smokers in Spain reaches pre-smoking ban levels The number of smokers in Spain has crept up to the levels recorded before the antitobacco law was introduced in 2005. According to the drug-consumption survey EDADES, carried out by the Health Ministry, 34 percent of Spaniards between the ages of 15 and 64 smoke on a daily basis. In 2005, before the law came into effect, the rate was 32.8 percent. The 2005 law banned smoking in the workplace but allowed it in smaller bars and restaurants; it was then toughened in 2010 to ban smoking from all closed public spaces. The most notable drop happened in the first year of the law’s introduction, when the percentage of daily smokers fell from 30.8 percent to 29.6 percent. Health Minister María Luisa Carcedo and Azucena Martí, the government delegate for the National Plan on Drugs, presented the results of the survey but they were unable to explain the rise in smokers. Carcedo said that more work needed to be done to ensure the current laws are being enforced. She did not rule out or confirm whether the Socialist Party (PSOE) government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was planning to ban smoking in cars or homes where there are minors, saying the issue would be complicated given that these are private spaces. The health minister did, however, announce that the government would launch a special campaign to stop young people from taking up smoking. According to the biannual survey, the number of young smokers has risen five

percentage points in the past two years. Francisco Rodríguez Lozano, the president of the European Network for Smoking Protection (ENSP), believes the rise in smokers could be related to the increasing number of women who are taking up the habit. The ENSP head says Spain should adopt measures that have had success in other countries, such as banning smoking at the beach and in vehicles. Regina Dalmau, the president of the National Committee for Tobacco Prevention (CNPT), agrees that the government must do more to tackle the problem. “Part of the explanation is the lack of policies to control tobacco, the self-complacency and passivity, which, given it is our main public health problem, indicates the lack of a sense of responsibility from the governments involved,” she said. “We will have to analyze in detail what sections of the population have seen an increase in smoking, but in any of them, the data is alarming,” she added. “I’m indignant.” Rodrigo Córdoba, the former president of the CNPT and an anti-tobacco activist, has no doubt that a lack of government action is to blame: “Nothing has been done in recent years,” he said. “In the fight against tobacco you have to continue to introduce measures. It’s like riding a bike. If you stop pedalling, you fall over.” Córdoba is proposing financial measures (increasing the cost of tobacco is the most effective strategy) and raising taxes on cigarettes. He also warns that

devices that supply nicotine, such as electronic cigarettes, will maintain the number of smokers by providing two forms of consumption. While the percentage of people who smoke has risen, the number of cigarette packs sold has dropped from 4.6 billion in 2005 to 2.2 billion in 2017. While one interpretation could be that Spaniards are smoking less, it is also possible more people are choosing to roll their own cigarettes. Other drug consumption Alcohol remains the most popular drug in Spain with consumption at 75.2 percent. It is followed by tobacco (40.9 percent), sedatives (11.1 percent) and cannabis (11 percent). At the end of the list are cocaine (2.2 percent), As well as tobacco, cannabis consumption ecstasy (0.6 percent), hallucinogens (0.4 percent), amphetamines (0.5 percent) and heroin (0.15 percent).has also increased in the past two years. The EDADES survey found that while daily use has remained the same (2.1 percent of those surveyed), the number of Spaniards who said they had used the drug in the past month jumped from 7.3 percent to 9.3 percent, and in the last year from 9.5 percent to 11 percent. The Health Ministry highlighted the close relationship between cannabis and tobacco given that 92.2 percent of people who smoke marijuana or hashish mix it with tobacco. Sedatives and painkillers are the only drugs that women take more of than men but in 95 percent of cases they had been prescribed.

The immune system fights more than infection Most people believe that the sole purpose of the body's immunity is to fight infections. As such, they expect the signs of a weak immune system to be frequent coughs and colds. If they do not suffer from these types of ailments, then they believe their immune system to be working well. This, however, is a stunted view of the immune system. The signs of weakness are actually more far-reaching than a mere cough or cold. Generalised body pain, joint aches and pain, high blood pressure, extreme fatigue and even food and chemical allergies all symptoms of an immune system in distress. The reason for this is that, in addition to its well-known role as a fighter of infections, the immune system is the key system that regulates the rate of inflammation and it also prevents allergies and food sensitivities. It is responsible for producing immune cells - leukocytes, lymphocytes and eosinophils, as well as immune chemicals such as leukotrienes. These cells and chemicals are released when the body is injured; a process called inflammation. Inflammation is the medical term that describes the body's response to injury. Chronic Inflammation is now recognised as the origin of many diseases including diabetes, Alzheimer's, heart diseases, etc. Although chronic inflammation may not be as a direct result of a dysfunctional immune system, it is worsened by it. As well as this, those who suffer from a

weakened immune system will have more severe symptoms of related illnesses. They will experience greater pain from joint diseases, more fatigue, a higher risk from heart problems, etc. This is why substances that are known to improve the immune system tend to have many health benefits. Another function of the immune system is the prevention of allergies. Allergies are not only related to the lungs, such as asthma and hay fever, but may

also cause abdominal and skin disorders. The immune system is important for regulating the presence of foreign substances entering the body. Those with allergic tendencies have a hypersensitivity of the immune system. This causes the immune system to overreact when exposed to substances that many other people tolerate without problem. One of the simplest and most efficient ways to boost the immune system is with

vitamin D, and the best sources of vitamin D is the sun. Over-exposure to sunlight can be harmful, but luckily our bodies are very good at obtaining vitamin D in a short amount of time. Just 15 minutes of exposure is sufficient to get your daily vitamin D needs. You could easily get this by walking to work or by sitting in the garden while you drink a cup of tea. It is also important to be mindful of factors that will harm your immune system. Unsurprising, excessive amounts

of alcohol and smoking are bad for it, but stress is also a major destroyer of the immune system. This is why so many people report experiencing severe health problems after a stressful period; these problems can be traced to a weak immune system. Furthermore, those with a stronger immune system will be able to cope with stressful situations better. Stress can be unavoidable in modern life, but try to counterbalance stressful factors, such as work pressures, by taking time to focus on yourself. Going for walks, reading a book, even taking a bath can all be good ways to calm yourself. Dr Machi Mannu is a medical doctor at MedB Clinic Torrevieja. New study sheds light on mental illness Researchers say a massive genetic analysis of the human brain has yielded new insights into the underpinnings of psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorderand autism. Scientists at 15 institutions analyzed nearly 2,000 brains, and their findings are detailed in 11 studies published Dec. 14 in a special edition of Science and two other journals. The researchers looked at specific genes and their regulatory networks to learn more about changes in the brain as it develops, how that varies between individuals, and the causes of certain mental disorders. This approach made it possible to evaluate the genetic risk of diseases such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder up to six times more accurately than with traditional analysis of known genetic risk variants, according to studies led by Mark Gerstein. Gerstein is a professor of biomedical informatics, molecular biophysics and biochemistry, computer science, and of statistics and data science at Yale University. Gerstein and his colleagues also found these genetic risk variants can influence the

function of genes very early in development and throughout life, but they have a greater chance of causing symptoms during different stages of brain development. Another Yale team said it uncovered why the risk of developing many neuropsychiatric illnesses such as autism and schizophrenia can vary over time. Differences in cell types between 16 regions of the brain during development may play a major role in determining whether people with genetic risk

actually develop a neuropsychiatric disorder, according to researchers in the lab of Dr. Nenad Sestan, a

professor of neuroscience, comparative medicine, genetics and psychiatry at Yale. Sestan and his team also found that the greatest differences in cell types and gene expression activity occur early in the womb, decrease late in pregnancy and in early childhood, and begin to increase again in early adolescence. These periods of significant changes in brain development are when genes associated with the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders tend to form distinct networks in certain brain areas, according to the investigators. Modules associated with autism tend to form early in development and those associated with schizophrenia -as well as IQ and neuroticism -tend to form later in life. This may explain why autism appears in early childhood and schizophrenia appears early in adulthood, the researchers said. Another finding was that changes in the brain that cause neuropsychiatric disorders can occur months or even years before symptoms appear, according to the study authors. "Risk factors for disease are always present, but they are not equally manifested across time and space," Sestan explained in a Yale news release.

Children celebrate Day of the Mountain The Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Ángel Fernández, used the Mirador de Orihuela to outline the activities that have been developed to mark the International Day of the Mountain. "This activity is intended to raise awareness for about 150 children who will enjoy the natural heritage that we have here on the mountain of San Miguel," said the Councillor. This is the first time that the Department of the Environment has celebrated this day with a series of activities which are focussed on learning and orientation in the mountains in a very dynamic way "so that the students become aware of the environment and for the care of nature and enjoy our natural surroundings" Councillor Fernandez explained. The project was carried out in three shifts of 1 hour and 15 minutes each. As reported by the Councillor, the children were given a tour of Mount San Miguel and then with a map of the area and a control sheet per group carried out

orientation activity in small groups so they could explore and experience nature first hand. In addition, they were given basic lessons on guidance, landmarks and management of the compass. The Councillor of the Environment was accompanied by a representative of the company Tramuntana, who explained that during this tour "each small group with its map and control sheet had to find different beacons and mark then with a clamp, in the order given to them on the control sheet provided to them". Finally, Miguel Angel Fernandez, wanted to emphasise that the Department of Environment wanted to perform a different type of activity to mark and celebrate World Mountain Day, "with the aim that schoolchildren learn while enjoying nature and the natural environment." To which he added: "We hope that the day has been a huge success and meets with a good reception so that we can repeat this type of activity to enrich the experiences of school children across the municipality". Restaurant meals ‘excessive’ says study The calorie content of meals in UK restaurants is "excessive" and sit-down restaurants are unhealthier than fast-food chains, BMJ research suggests. Health experts say meals should not exceed 600 calories, but in this study they averaged 1,033 in restaurants and 751 in fast-food chains. University of Liverpool researchers analysed thousands of meals from places like Hungry Horse and McDonald's. They said their findings were a cause for concern. The research team looked at more than 13,500 meals on the menus of 21 sit-down restaurants and six fast-food chains. By using online company information on calorie content, only one in 10 meals was classed as healthy or fewer than 600kcal, as recommended by Public Health England. And nearly half of the meals contained 1,000kcal or more. Sit-down restaurants were five times more likely to offer high-calorie meals of 1,000kcal or more than fast-food restaurants, the research found. Dr Eric Robinson, lead researcher from Liverpool's department of psychological science, said the results were "shocking" but probably underestimated the calories consumed in restaurants. KFC topped the fast-food list with an average of 987 calories per meal offered. Burger King, McDonald's and Subway were around 700kcal. Even when the study compared similar meals, the energy content in restaurant meals was greater. Burger meals in restaurants contained an average of 414kcal more than burger meals in fast-food chains, while salad meals in restaurants were slightly higher in calories on average than fast food salads. Dr Robinson said portion size, the ingredients used and cooking methods could explain the difference, but he said the food industry had to make changes. P R O F I L E

Do Something Campaign! Give the gift of health and happiness this month with Medcare

A

s well as the GP services and dental care synonymous with Medcare, the ethos of the clinic is to provide all encompassing solutions for complete health and wellbeing. One of the most popular and important promotions that Medcare releases each year is the Health Check. This year, however, Medcare is making it more convenient with more options available in the new Do Something campaign. The campaign is designed to encourage everyone to Do Something, rather than sit back and do nothing. So even if the full health check may seem a little bit too comprehensive or too expensive for you, now there are two other checks that can still benefit your health and set you on the right track. Whereas the Full Health Check includes everything from well man and well woman cancer checks, blood tests for anaemia and infection, diabetes, thyroid, kidney and liver disease, an ECG and cholesterol tests, the alternative checks still check for potentially lifealtering diabetes and heart disease. From just 25 euros you can have a diabetes test and your blood pressure taken. The next level of check includes the diabetes check, BP and a cholesterol check. All of the information for the Do Something campaign is on the website. One Medcare patient came for his yearly Health Check, and on arrival of his test results Doctor Hussain was so concerned about his

heart that she referred him immediately to hospital, where he was fitted with two stents that same day. This goes to prove how the body can change even within 12 months. Cancer cells can develop within a year, and diseases can manifest themselves in just a few months. After the age of 50 it becomes more important that men and women get regular health checks. So, Medcare impresses upon all patients to Do Something, especially now you can choose a health check suitable for you. To cater for the aesthetic wellbeing, Medcare has many packages of products and treatments. There is currently 15% off Exilis noninvasive treatments to blitz stubborn fat and tighten skin on the face and neck, stomach or thighs. There are winter skincare kits from GLO and Medcare’s exclusive Rapid Results package (botox, lip fillers and skin peels) and the new Ultimate Non-Surgical Lift package, the pinnacle of anti-ageing treatments to banish lines, rejuvenate the skin and promote a younger visage! Also, gift vouchers can be purchased to give your loved one the gift they really want this Christmas! Barbara via email asks: Hi Aunty my problem is my printer which is an Epson XP425 and it has worked perfectly before but now the print is not all coming out. I have ink in all of the cartridges, and have taken all out and replaced and recharged ink and cleaned print heads but still the same problem! Do you have any suggestions please? Aunty Says: Without seeing the pattern of the ink on the printed pages Barbara I can’t tell you exactly where the problem is, but it seems you have tried pretty much everything. How old is the printer? Anything over a few years old is probably not worth spending any money on as new ones are sub €50. Roy via email asks: Hi Aunty, love your column. I have a folder of your anwsers for future references! My problem is with Picasa, for well over a decade I have been using the site for sending photographs to my friends. I select the pictures, click into the envelope at the bottom of the page and a box appears stating the amount of pictures that I wish to send. I type in the recipients email address and then send. It then shows a bar to

state when the pictures have been sent, but now whether I send one or twenty a message appears saying “ERROR there is a problem” I am on a Windows 7 laptop. Has Picasa finished or is there an alternative? Aunty Says: Hi Roy. Google’s Picasa App & site has been replaced/upgraded by their Google Photos product. It is very similar (but better) and works on Windows and phones. Once setup you’ll never have to worry about backing up or organizing your photos. Try it and see if you still get the same email send error. Keep me posted. Paula from Cabo Roig asks: Hello Aunty. I‘m treating myself to a new laptop for Christmas and I will need to transfer my stuff from my old one. How do I do this so that my old computer is ok to dump and no one can get my personal

www.costablancapeople.com

documents and photos etc? I hear stories of people getting hacked when they’ve left all of their internet and email information on their old computer. Aunty Says: Hi Paula. Transferring your photos & docs from one computer to the other is pretty easy but it will depend on how well organised your files and folders are, and how much stuff you have. You can buy a 32GB USB flash memory stick for under €10 and use this to copy/paste everything from one machine to the other. On your old computer, right click on a folder and from the menu that pops up choose ‘copy’ and then right click on the USB stick and choose ‘paste’. The USB stick should appear after plugging it in as a new drive in My Computer or File Manager. Once you have double checked that you have everything from your old computer you should really physically destroy the internal hard disk in the old one as it isn’t difficult to retrieve data even after the computer has been wiped. Drop me a line if you need some advice with this. Any questions email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week.

Alcohol and Drugs - The Christmas Increase

psychoactive substances that have effects, in many cases lethal, when driving”. In addition, he added that “the realisation of these preventive controls on the road is along with road safety education, one of the most effective instruments to dissuade the driver from getting behind the wheel if they have consumed any psychoactive substance.” Drug use is taken very seriously by the DGT, which is why the penalties are so severe, in line with the penalties for habitual drinkers, or those with dangerously excessive levels of alcohol. The presence of drugs that can affect driving is punished by a 1,000 euro fine and 6 points, however, it soon becomes a criminal matter rather than an administrative one when, “Driving under the influence of toxic drugs, narcotics or psychotropic substances”, can be punished by, “Prison of three to six months or a fine of six to twelve months or work for the benefit of the community from 30 to 90 days, and deprivation of the right to drive from one to four years.” We have to expand the drug problem further however, because we often imagine drug users and can picture them in our minds, but the reality is that any one of us could have consumed drugs which affect driving. There are many people who fail a roadside drugs test having believed themselves innocent, and had to face the consequences, as many prescription drugs can also result in a failed test and a deterioration in your driving ability, perhaps without you even realising. That is why it is vital that you check your medication, looking for warnings on the packaging or instructions, and asking your doctor or pharmacist as to the effects they might have.

All last week, the DGT ran a special awareness campaign aimed at alerting drivers to the dangers of having consumed alcohol or drugs before driving. As part of the campaign, the Guardia Civil Trafico conducted 20,000 daily tests on drivers, to ensure that they are safe behind the wheel. Although last week saw intensified efforts which coincided with a Europe-wide campaign run by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Organisation, as it was the week which is most popular with office and workplace parties, the surveillance will continue right through the holiday season. In Spain, the campaign was also be supported by the local and regional police, many of whom were also carrying out enforcement checks with equipment provided by the DGT. The percentage of drivers who tested positive for alcohol on urban roads is greater than the percentage of interurban drivers. According to data from the DGT, in 2017 26% of deceased drivers gave positive results in the tests of alcohol, and of these, 74% presented a rate higher than three times the maximum rate allowed, that is according to the post-mortem data from the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences, as well as by the Institutes of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Murcia and Galicia. At any given time, more than 10% of all drivers have consumed more than the maximum permitted amounts of alcohol or some form of illegal drug. However, alcohol is not the only problem, it is one of a growing trend of ignorance that leads to fatal injuries, many of whom are innocent. According to the Director General of Traffic, Pere Navarro, “the objective of this type of campaign is to make citizens aware that it’s not only alcohol that is incompatible with driving, but other drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, are

Add your bike to a National Database for free In the past few weeks we have seen the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja arrest a gang of people suspected to have stolen around 100 bikes in the Torrevieja area, and the Local Police in Pilar de la Horadada also arresting suspects for similar offences. In Torrevieja, a catalogue of the recovered bikes has been created which anybody who has suffered the loss of a bicycle can check and, hopefully, be reunited with their vehicle. In Pilar de la Horadada, the rightful owners have already had their bikes returned, thanks to an initiative which began in the town and

is now spreading nationally. In order to prevent thefts like this, Pilar de la Horadada council set up a registration system in 2017, where bike owners can register their vehicle and thus reduce the risk of theft, and, if it is stolen, allow for a quicker return if recovered. This has proven successful in the cases this week. Since 2017, the system has grown and the website now accepts registrations from all across Spain, and so you too can add your details at www.biciregistro.es, and hopefully, although we hope it doesn’t become necessary, have

your bike returned promptly in the event of theft. You can register your bike for free, even adding photos, as well as a description, but for a small administration fee of just 7 euro you can also get an identification kit for your bike, which can be done at the validating centre, which in the Municipal Tourism Office, located in Plaza de Campoamor, 2 of Pilar de la Horadada. In addition, the Orihuela Costa town hall is also a registered point, according to the website, and so you can ask at the information office there if you want more information.

Get Sacked in the morning ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

A question to my older readers. Was that the least inspiring United selection you have seen in your lifetime? When was the last time you compared your XI to Liverpool’s and thought, ‘they are a lot better than we are’? Seeing Matteo Darmian line up as a centre-back hardly gave the United fans confidence especially when they remembered both Scott McTominay and Ander Herrera being given a run out there previously this season. Kloppo won the pre-match chat with his throwaway line about hearing all week that United had ‘no defenders’ yet seemed to have them ‘all over the pitch’. But the match was not played in the pre-match chat, oh no. It was played on the pitch at Anfield, a stadium that allegedly plays house to the most passionate fans in England.

Ashley Young The Liverpool supporters were very, very noisy as Liverpool bossed the opening exchanges. They were raucous as Sadio Mane opened the scoring after Ashley Young forgot, once again, that as a makeshift left back he does have to track the runner. But, we can only assume that the Anfield faithful were still in shock at halftime having witnessed another Alisson mistake leading to United getting level because after that goal it all went a little quiet. What a difference the space of a few days makes when you are a goalkeeper. After the Napoli game Jurgey lad was saying how he’d have paid double for the Brazilian after his ‘world-class save’ in the dying moments kept Liverpool in Europe. In reality, that shot was hit straight at him; a bit like Rashford’s cross was straight at him before he kneed it out of his own hands into the path of Jesse Lingard.

It’s worth pointing out that with that second mistake leading to a goal, Alisson has now made the same amount of goalinducing errors in the Premier League as both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius

Shaqiri combined last season. Just saying. Before the match, Lingard was getting a bit of criticism from Gary Neville and Roy Keane for launching his clothing brand in the last week. Neville didn’t have a problem with Lingard starting a business, just the timing. Keano, well you know how he takes offence to anything that isn’t pure football commitment 24/7. But Lingard did what Lingard does, scoring yet another (at the time) important goal. But the really important goal was scored by the Liverpool sub, Shaqiri. How many deflections do you need off a United player before you are allowed to call it a goal? Five, I think and the final one coming off Ashley Young who must have taken a Carl Lewis length long jump towards retirement in that 90 minutes. Shaqiri’s shot also meant that every Liverpool player other than Alisson managed to take a shot at David de Gea.

bench in the pouring rain. It has to be said, that level of pettiness is Mourinho at his absolute best. The Anfield crowd suddenly found their voice, claiming the ‘You Only Sing When You’re Winning Award 2018’. Shaqiri’s second had people scrambling to find out whether any player had scored a hat-trick of deflected goals in the Premier League. With the first being deflected off his right foot and the second deflected off his left, he ended the game a deflected header away from the perfect deflected treble. At 1-1, Kloppo had sent on Shaqiri to win the game.

Charlie Austin At the same scoreline, Mourinho had sent on Fellaini to kill it. I think it’s fair to say it didn’t work. Fellaini did get into the Liverpool area once and hit the security guy by the corner flag. Jose had started the day suggesting he was ‘in the dark’ over potential January signings. After that, you can kind of see why. The game ended with ‘don’t sack Mourinho’ being sung all around the stadium. Who knows if they will get their wish? I have a question. Why on earth do teams (yes, I am looking at you Everton) try and play out from the goalkeeper against Manchester City? Call me a little bit old fashioned, but as far as I know even City cannot score if the ball is in their

Raheem Sterling 2-1 down, 15 minutes to go and both Paul Pogba and Juan Mata sitting on the

Claudio Ranieri half. Knocking it short to Yerry Mina and forcing him to suddenly transform himself into Bobby Moore and ping a 40-yardpass to Richarlison doesn’t feel like the safest tactic in the world. And, as a result, Mina gave it straight to a City midfielder

Joe Hart

and the ball was in Everton’s net seconds later. Things might have been a little different if Richarlison hadn’t served notice that it is now December and it about time his form started to decline, missing a golden chance to put Everton ahead. On the flip side, Jesus is having a great December already. There has to be a nativity based gag in there somewhere. Pep is full of admiration for Raheem Sterling given how the England international has conducted himself in the last week or so. Sterling managed to score with his first

Eden Hazard

touch having come on as a sub, a goal that alerted Peppy G to the fact that Raheem is a much better finisher when he doesn’t have time to think about it. There’s the answer to his international goalscoring record Gareth, right there for you. Tottenham are being quietly efficient on the pitch. In fact, they are being so efficient that their builders would do well to give them a call for some tips. Joe Hart was peak Joe Hart once more for Burnley. He made some great saves and yet still managed to oversee another defeat. Sean Dyche lamented the fact that Burnley were beaten by a ‘lump down the pitch’. How frustrating must it be to get beaten by the tactics you preach to your own team all week, eh? I mentioned in my gettingsacked inthemorning.com on Thursday that we might be about to find out how good Laurent Koscielny really is. For years it has been assumed that Koscielny is a world-class defender let down by the idiots around him. Well, he returned to Premier League action for Arsenal against Southampton with his team unbeaten in far too many matches for me to still be counting. Arsenal, keeping on trend with their ‘not winning at halftime’ thing trailed 2-1 to Southampton at the break which wasn’t that much of a shock given that they drew Granit Xhaka out of the ‘who shall we play at centre back this week, lads?’ hat. I guess getting a deflection of that big lump of a Southampton defender Vestergaard is actually quite easy given the size of him. Mhki-T got a double but so did Danny

Ings. And then, in a turn up for the books not many were expecting, Parklife’s Charlie Austin netted a winner. Southampton fans, you have a good manager there now. Be nice to this one. Chelsea edged past Brighton 2-1 at the Amex but not without their now bi-weekly hilarious defending. Maybe the back four was just trying to distract the world from everything that has been happening off the pitch? Eden Hazard gives the impression of not having a brilliant season so far but, and statistics do have an annoying habit of popping up and making your gut feeling look a mile off, Hazard is one of only two players with eight plus goals and eight plus assists this season. The other? That lad who wears 10 for Barcelona. Claudio Ranieri’s ‘bounce’ really hasn’t been that bouncy. Fulham played well against West Ham but that really doesn’t matter considering they lost (again) and let in three goals (again). West Ham United have won four league matches in a row since they were managed by Sam Allardyce and I think it is fair to suggest that they have achieved this with a touch more swagger than under Big Sham. Felipe Anderson is starting to look like another astute West Ham signing, something not many of us expected to be saying. Rafa Benitez won November’s Manager of the Month award and the usual trajectory of such an honour was reversed as Newcastle went to Huddersfield and won. This Geordie revival is very ill-timed given that the transfer window is about to open and Mike Ashley is going to be able to point to the current run and say that any new signings could disrupt things and that Rafa is doing well enough as it is thank you very much. Crystal Palace have finally won a match where Wilf Zaha is not playing. Surely this means the time is now ripe to cash in on him in Janauary? Roy Hodgson could then spend the £50m on finding more players like Luka Milivojecic (another player that slightly better Premier League sides must surely be looking at). It was a vital win for Palace against Leicester. Is it possible that people might have got just a little bit too excited about Bournemouth this season? Eddie Howe’s men have now lost six of their last seven having been tossed aside 2-0 at Molineux. Maybe it is time for us to get too excited about their victors, Wolves, instead? Hands up if you had Watford vs Cardiff down as a five-goal thriller? No? Nobody? Junior Hoilett went to great lengths to prove his goal the other week was not a fluke by doing exactly the same thing again. But hey, it worked. Just call him the inverted Andros Townsend as I would imagine that the next ten times Junior tries that move it hits row Z.
