Body of missing Irishman found A body, believed to be that of missing Irishman Carl Carr, has been recovered from an area near the motorway between Algorfa and Benijófar.

this is what led to his demise. However, a motive for the alleged murder has not been formally confirmed. Five people were arrested – identities have not been released but they are Continued on page 5

Sources claim that preliminary checks indicate that the body is likely that of missing 38-year-old Carr, given information about his tattoos and metal bars in his legs from a car accident. DNA samples have been taken from the remains to confirm his identity. Five arrests were made and four people have been remanded in custody without bail – one for alleged murder and three for concealment. Carr was reported missing by his girlfriend in September last year after he had been at a dance event in Cabo Roig and had not returned. The body was discovered by police buried in a shallow

grave near the motorway. It appears that he may have been beaten to death. Despite Carr’s previous criminal record for drugs charges – he served an eight year jail sentence in Ireland after heroin and cocaine worth €1.43 million was seized – police believe that the alleged murder is not drug related. Speaking to the press in Ireland, Carr’s mother claims that her son was involved in a ‘love triangle’ and that

Old lorries cause worries The bin lorries that collect rubbish from Torrevieja’s streets are 17 years old and some vehicles are even older, dating back to 1998. The rubbish collection service continues to be a focus for criticism and conflict as they clean up the streets but without having had a contract since 2016. The firm that currently has the responsibility for collecting Torrevieja’s rubbish is Acciona. You can see their name and logo on many of the lorries and vans in the area. It is not an easy job for those employed by the firm. The official waste bins are used as an excuse to dump everything on the streets and they are responsible for clearing it up. Now, the unions and their representatives are complaining that not only do they have to carry out this unpleasant job but they are having to do so in antiquated vehicles. They claim that the vehicles have become unhygienic and are full of infestations and have even had to be fumigated. The firm supplemented the stock during the summer by renting four lorries but these were not new either. Since 2011, when the town hall closed down Acciona’s illegal transfer plant in La Marquesa, this fleet of lorries has had to cover eight collection routes through Torrevieja’s urban jungle and then has transport waste to landfills in Xixona, Alicante and Elche. The extra distance travelled means that the wear and tear on the lorries has increased. This has reduced the working lives of the lorries but has not led to them being replaced. Those using them complain of leaking oil and constant

breakdowns. There are also concerns about safety. Conditions are not much better back at base. The changing rooms and toilets that the 210 workers must use are temporary ones and have been since 2004. The town hall pays out 14 million euros annually for the service and yet, it is claimed, they haven’t managed to mend a toilet in two decades. A spokesperson for the UGT, the union representing the refuse workers, has claimed that they have been waiting for a meeting with the town hall since last

July. It has been well-documented that the town hall would like to take the refuse collection service into public ownership. For almost two years they have tried to bring it under town hall control but the moves to do this have been voted against by opposition parties. For those driving and manning the lorries, the failure to deal with their conditions of service is a hardship they face on a daily basis. Suzanne O’Connell

Boxes and bags of evidence

Woman seriously injured by husband A 78 year old woman was admitted to Torrevieja hospital’s Intensive Care Unit with serious injuries following a brutal beating by her 80 year old husband. The woman had multiple injuries all over her body and had experienced a severe blow to the head. Her husband has since been arrested by the Guardia Civil. The man had used several blunt objects in order to cause the greatest damage possible. These included an axe, an iron bar and a hammer. It was the blow to the head with the hammer that caused the greatest injury. After hitting her on a number of occasions the man dragged the woman and threw her down the stairs of the property in which they lived. The Guardia Civil were made aware of the brutal attack at 10.50am on 1st February. They attended the address in the area of Pueblo Centro between avenida Ricardo Lafuente and the industrial estate, as quickly as possible and were joined by the Local Police. They found the woman and she was quickly taken to hospital where she remains in a serious condition. Representatives from Torrevieja town hall showed their horror at this latest attack with a congregation in the Plaza de la Constitución on Saturday.

The judicial buildings in avenida de Las Habaneras are five storeys tall and now they struggle to handle all the cases that come their way. In 2007 the courts were extended with another similar building constructed by a construction company in exchange, it is claimed, for receiving the area of Torreblanca from the City Council. However, the construction company never completed the fifth floor which currently houses this medley of evidence. Suzanne O’Connell

This will apply to all educational establishments that are not designated as universities. The announcement has been made following the request of parents a couple of months ago. The explosion took place on 27th January in an apartment on calle Ciudad Real and is believed to have been caused by an accumulation of butane gas from a bottle in the kitchen. The married couple of 70 years old had to be transferred to Torrevieja hospital. The couple suffered burns in the explosion which took place at 2.30pm in urbanisation Lomas Playa, Fase 1 near avenida de Alfred Nobel. The fire brigade, local police and Guardia Civil were called out to the incident and the injured couple were conscious when removed from the building. Initially they were treated by the SAMU ambulance for burns and were then taken to Torrevieja hospital. Shortly afterwards they were taken to the burns unit at Alicante General Hospital. Along

with the couple, the firemen also rescued their dog which had also suffered serious burns as a result of the explosion. The dog was taken to a vet by the local police. The explosion caused extensive damage throughout the property and also part of the communal area, including the swimming pool. There was concern that there may have been further explosions as another three gas bottles were located near by and the property had to be ventilated to ensure that these did not explode too. The noise from the explosion was heard by many residents living in the area between Torrevieja and La Mata. The emergency services concluded their work at around 3.30pm. Suzanne O’Connell

Spain ends 2018 with biggest surge in jobs for 12 years The year 2018 was a positive one for jobs in Spain. That is five good years in a row, and the best on record since 2006, before the economic crisis hit. The Spanish economy created 566,200 positions last year, a figure unmatched in the last 12 years. This brings the total number of people in employment to 19.56 million, according to the workforce survey released on Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Job creation in the last quarter of 2018 fell exclusively to the public sector, which offered 43,400 new positions while the private sector shed 6,900 jobs. But both sectors improved on their late 2017 figures. On the unemployment front, 2018 has also brought good news. The

number of job seekers dropped by 21,700 in the last quarter and by 462,400 for the year as a whole. As a result, the number of people without a job stands at 3.3 million, leaving the unemployment rate at 14.45 per cent. This is two points lower than in late 2017 and the lowest figure since late 2008. Employment grew at a rate of 2.98 per cent in the last three months of 2018, the fastest pace since the first quarter of 2016. The news comes amid warnings of an upcoming slowdown in the global economy that will also affect Spain. The workforce has grown as well, and there are now 22.87 million people either in employment or looking for a job.

Body of missing Irishman found believed to be of Irish, British and Spanish nationality. One individual was released but remains under investigation. The other four, including the one accused of the alleged murder, appeared in court at the weekend and have been remanded in custody. The court appearance is believed to have taken place after the body was located but no formal charges have yet been brought against the four – two men

and two women - as is the norm here in Spain where charges are formalised closer to trial. The investigation into Carr’s disappearance was initially led by authorities in Orihuela but was moved when investigators suspected that the alleged murder took place within the jurisdiction of Torrevieja. The main suspect is also believed to be under investigation for extortion as part of a separate case.

A kind of magic We caught up with Pasku Frutos, guitarist of Unrisen Queen, for a chat in advance of the band’s forthcoming concert in Cartagena. As Europe’s top Queen tribute band, we were keen to find out about the ‘kind of magic’ behind the scenes at Unrisen Queen. Unrisen Queen was formed back in 2001 by Rubén Sabater (lead singer) and Pasku. He explained, “We actually began as a glam rock band, but before long, we all realised that Ruben’s voice sounded incredibly similar to Freddie Mercury. We decided to perform some queen songs, just for fun at rehearsals, and it wasn’t until 2009 that we actually performed Queen material live on stage.” Pasku went on to say, “Over the last almost 20 years, we have had some changes in our lineup as some members have had their own solo projects. From the original group, just myself and Rubén remain, but these changes have helped the band become even better. We wanted good musicians, but also people who fit into our ‘family’. It’s like when you meet the one you know you want to marry, you just

know it will be a good fit. And so, we now also have Emanuel Menta on piano, Frankchesco di Napoli on bass and Chimi on drums. And of course, Maguez, the best Stage Manager ever and probably the most popular guy when we play live.” The band mainly tours Europe but have yet to perform in the UK or Ireland. Pasku explained, “It’s a pity actually, because we love these islands, the people, but we haven’t had the opportunity yet. And it is a ‘double pity’ because although we are a band from Murcia, we formed our company in London, so... legally... we are a British Band (with not so good English speakers!)” We asked Pasku about some of the band’s encounters with the original crew surrounding Queen and Freddie Mercury. He said, “Two of our most important performances were the times we played at the International Freddie Mercury Memorial Shows in Switzerland, people from all over the world attend. The first time we played here it was Peter Freestone (Freddie’s PA) who got in touch and the second time it was Jim Beach, Queen manager. That

The band with Peter Freestone

meant a lot.” As a tribute band, we asked Pasku if the band ever becomes ‘bored’ of playing Queen songs. He said, “It would be possible, but we are the only band around

The tickets

Pasku with Jim Beach

the world that have performed more than 90 different songs by Queen. It’s weird, but we never repeat a set list anywhere. There are certain songs we can never leave out of a show, but we are always

preparing new ones for live gigs... you could attend two consecutive days at the same venue ... and you’ll never hear exactly the same songs in the same order.” In terms of the band’s fanbase, it seems to be universal. According to Pasku, “There is no one in this part of the multiverse who hasn’t got a favourite Queen song ... no kid, no teenager, no adult, no grandparent... the age group is UNIVERSAL.” The band puts an incredible amount of work into what they do. They are their own producers, managers and promoters so they don’t just work on the music end of things. There is also a huge team of other people behind the scenes, Vicente and Richard: Sound Engineers, Raúl, Miriam and Eva: control and coordination, Rafa Buendia: Luthier and Instrument Technician, Maguez: stage manager. And, as Pasku says, “All of them extremely important at their own job.” The band is gearing up for its performance on February 8th in Cartagena and don’t forget that the Costa Blanca People has three pairs of tickets to give away. See page 20 of this week’s paper for details on how to enter the draw.

The refuse collection contract – a never ending story The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, is hoping that this ongoing story of when, how and with who, the refuse collection service should continue, may be nearing an end. In a press conference on 30th January he described the stages that have occurred in this saga as four phases. He criticised the first phase which he defined as when the original contract was established. This was in 2004 and continued until 2014, with an additional extension for another two years. The second phase coincided with the change of government following the local elections. At this point the new council wanted

to take over the management of the service but the proposal was overturnedin a council vote. Something which the mayor feels has been extremely detrimental to the town. ‘Torrevieja could have had a service running at full capacity with new trucks and machinery, but this was turned down by the opposition,’ said the mayor. The third phase he described as ‘indirect management of the contract’. A situation that was reluctantly entered into as a result of the proposal being squashed at the plenary meeting.Torrevieja needs its rubbish collecting and the arrangements continued even though the contract had expired.

Now, in the fourth phase, the local administration is pursuing a new contract under the new Contracting Law which came into force on March 9th 2018. It is hoped that workers’ conditions and other aspects of the arrangement with Acciona can be improved with the new contract. Refuse collection contracts continue to be one of the most hotly debated areas of council hall spending in Spain. This is because they are worth a lot of money and there has been a tendency for councils to award the contracts according to political preferences rather than to those bidding with the best deals. Crowdfunding continues The appeal launched by the protest group ‘Salvemos Lo Ferrís’ or Save Lo Ferrís continues to raise money. The association has been donated €3,000 in the last 40 days and is almost halfway to raising the €6,666 needed by some of its members who have been prosecuted for their actions as part of the association. The amount raised is the minimum amount needed to proceed to the next stage of crowdfunding. Had it not been reached then the association would have had to return the money. Salvemos Lo Ferrís want to express their appreciation to the 75 people who are supporting the project and hope that more people will join in. They now have 31 days left in which to reach their goal. The money is needed to pay court expenses accrued during the campaign. The organisers want to continue to defend what they consider to be the environmental and historical heritage of the locality. A member of the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja has been accused of beating up a young thief who he had arrested for stealing a bicycle. The alleged attack took place in 2008 and has now just come to court in Elche. The 17 year old was caught with the bicycle and the police officer then proceeded to arrest him. Once he had handcuffed him, according to the prosecutor, the police officer hit him several times on the head, in the face and the upper part of his body. It is claimed that this caused some severe injuries including the loss of two teeth, damage to the jaw and other teeth. The prosecutor initially asked for three years in prison for torture, another five for criminal injury and another five for the falsification of a public document. The police report of the incident gave other explanations for the 17 year-old’s injuries. However, since then the punishment requested has

been reduced to a total of four years given the delay there has been in the case coming to court. It is now eleven years since the actual incident took place. In his defence, the police officer claims that the youth tried to assault him when he was putting on the handcuffs and tried to head butt him. The police officer says that he dodged the head butt and instead the teenager hit his own head against the wall, falling to the floor where he sustained further injuries. This is the third case recently that has involved allegations against police officers concerning torture and assault. At the end of last year, five local police officers were acquitted after allegations that they had been involved in torturing some thieves. A trial was also held in December when five Guardia Civil officers were accused of torturing a detainee. Suzanne O’Connell

Telefónica to share Let there be light 5G network in UK in the Semana with Vodafone Santa Museum

Questions answered at Neighbourhood Watch meeting

Spanish telecommunications giant Telefónica is reported to have struck a 'preliminary' deal with British operator Vodafone to share 5G networks in the UK. This 'non-binding' agreement will allow for the new mobile technology to roll out 'much more quickly', says Telefónica.

On Monday, 28th January, it was a packed hall in Casa Ventura, full of local residents. President of the San Luis/La Siesta neighbourhood watch group, Doug Allen, was delighted by the turn out and the opportunity it provided to hear directly what is happening and receive advice. Altogether over 80 residents of different nationalities turned up to find out what the local council is up to and to have their questions answered by the Guardia Civil. Top of the list of priorities was the status of British residents following Brexit and the issue of local security. People wanted to know more about their own requirements and how to stay legal in Spain. There to answer their questions were Councillor Carmen Morate, Director of the Foreigners’ Office Carlos Gonzalez and two Guardia Civil officers. Whatever the outcome of Brexit, the audience were told, it is important that residents have residency, are on the padrón and have changed their UK driving licences to Spanish ones. It was noted that the padrón needs renewing every five years and that you will not necessarily be notified when this is necessary. Questions were asked about the Prop and Padrón offices. Both of these are busy places and the council representatives were able to explain more about the forthcoming move which should, hopefully, enable a better service. Those attending the meeting were also reminded that they can use the La Mata offices for these purposes too. There was some discussion about the fact that Spain and the UK have agreed that those with British nationality will be able to continue to vote in the local elections in Spain. These will take place in May this year and residents must be registered on the padrón to take part. Councillor Morate also updated the audience on the current budget situation. Security was an important topic. Questions were asked about squatters, beggars and how to protect homes from thieves. Concerns were raised about street lighting and abandoned vehicles. A number of different companies were represented at Casa Ventura and provided demonstrations of home security and safety products. The next meeting will be held on Monday, 25th February at 4.30pm in Casa Ventura and anyone who has property in this area including La Siesta, San Luis and El Limonar is welcome to attend. The N332 team from Trafico will be there to answer your questions and to talk about the new English version of the Spanish Highway Code and changes to the speed limits. There will also be entertainment by the choir, Dawn Chorus.

It will be the first time Telefónica has entered into a network-sharing partnership of this type – if it goes ahead. The contract was awarded in April last year for the sum of £317.7 million (about €362m), at 40MHz on a 3.4GHz band. Telefónica and Vodafone are said to be analysing options for offering a shared fibreoptic network and exploring ways of optimising the passive transmission tower grid they each own 50 percent of. Whether or not the deal goes ahead depends upon the two companies' agreeing over the small print, finalising

the legal aspects and gaining all the necessary authorisations. It is likely Spain's National Competition and Values Markets Commission (CNMV) will approve the joint venture, as Telefónica appears to have already received the unofficial nod after writing to the regulatory board. Telefónica stressed to the CNV that this alliance would allow its UK-based brand, O2, and Vodafone jointly to offer 5G services to more customers within a wider geographical area and at a lower cost. As well as increasing connection speed and capacity, 5G technology reduces website response times by around a millisecond – enough to allow for 'driverless driving' and even remote surgical operations to become a reality. Other than O2 via Telefónica and Vodafone, the UK's other main operators are EE Limited, which is owned by the BT group, and Hutchinson, which each hold 40MHz and 20MHz of the 3.4GHz band respectively, meaning the VodafoneTelefónica fusion would instantly put them in control of a larger market and network share. The deal, if it comes off, is expected to allow the network-sharing operation to start later this year.

Plans for the new Semana Santa Museum are currently on hold whilst the town council waits for Iberdrola to connect the electricity. The museum has been reorganised and is due to host the Museo del Mar y de la Sal (Sea and Salt Museum) too.

was handed over to Torrevieja town last September by the Valencian regional government. It has five floors above and three floors below ground level and cost more than six million euros to build. It is planned that other local council departments will also be based here,

It has been a controversial reorganisation as it means moving around the effigies that are a feature of the traditional Easter time processions. It has also raised debate with the announcement that these effigies will share floor space with evidence moved from the courts. This is currently stored in boxes on the fifth floor of the court building. The Semana Santa Museum building

reducing the monthly fees that the local government has to pay out for renting premises. It is claimed that it could already be in use but for the fact that Iberdrola has not yet connected the electricity. Only when this final act has been completed can the building be given its licencia de actividad and open its doors. Suzanne O’Connell

First motorway to scrap toll sees 58 per cent traffic increase Traffic on the AP-1 motorway has rocketed by 58 per cent since the government scrapped the tolls on 1st December, giving an idea of what is yet to come when the next batch of pay-per-use highway franchises come up for renewal. Public works minister José Luis Ábalos opted to continue with the previous government's plans not to renew any of the toll contracts on Spain's motorways once they expired, and a sub-commission in Parliament has been set up to work out how they will fund their maintenance in future. The AP-1 was the first, and another nine followed a fortnight ago – the AP-7 between Cartagena (Murcia) and Vera (Almería) and the Alicante ring road on the same motorway; the AP36 between Ocaña (Toledo province) and La Roda (Albacete province); the AP-41 from Madrid to Toledo; the M12 Madrid airport link road, and three Madrid outer-suburban 'radial' highways, the R-2, R-3, R-4 and R-5. These nine, however, are only tollfree overnight from midnight to 6am but fees for their use during the day have been slashed by 30 percent to encourage users. Toll motorways in general have been losing traffic – and money – since the start of the financial crisis as drivers sought to save cash, and the firms' response of putting up prices to claw back more backfired, with vehicle numbers plummeting as a result. This has become patent in year-end

with 68.6 percent extra being recorded, or 6,400 a day, compared with 3,800 as at November 2018. Assuming the current government stays in power until the next general elections are due in November 2020 – or a new government decides to continue with the motorway 'buy-back' plan – another handful will be toll-free by then.

Franchise ends

traffic figures for the AP-1 between Burgos (Castilla y León) and Armiñón (Álava province, in the Basque Country), with a 58 percent rise in a month, skewing the total for 2018 to show an annual increase of 5.26 percent. Since 1st December, the AP-1 has witnessed the passage of 26,516 vehicles

a day on average, compared with 16,703 a day over the rest of 2018. This translates to a year-on-year rise of 40 percent - in December 2017, an average of 18,900 cars, vans and lorries used the AP-1 every day. Lorries are using the motorway far more now the tolls have been scrapped –

On New Year's Eve this year, the toll franchises for the AP-7 from Tarragona (Catalunya) to Castellón and from Silla (Valencia province) to San Juan (Alicante province), plus the AP-4 in the provinces of Sevilla and Cádiz will also end and not be renewed, meaning these roads will become free of charge from 1st January, 2020. So far, of the 10 toll roads now back in State hands, only two have seen a reduction in traffic rather than an increase – the R-3 Madrid-Arganda del Rey 'radial' highway, and the R-5 between Madrid and Navalcarnero (Toledo province) – the first of these by 24 percent, down to 8,214 vehicles a day, and the second by just 0.85 percent, to 10,868 per day. Traffic volume hikes on the other seven – excluding the AP-1, R-3 and R-5 – range from 1.8 percent on the AP-7 Alicante ring-road up to 15.7 percent on the AP-41 Madrid-Toledo motorway. However, the latter has long been the motorway with the lowest volume of traffic in the country, at just 1,193 vehicles a day.

New speed limits now in force in Spain BY MARK NOLAN

As of Tuesday 29 January, 2019, new maximum permitted speed limits came into force on certain roads in Spain. This is the first of a wave of reforms intended on reducing the number of injuries and fatal incidents on the roads, and is effective on 7,000 kilometres of the secondary road network. This reform reduces the maximum permitted speed on some of the main carriageways of the road network, and fixes a maximum permitted speed of 90 kilometres per hour, on roads where no other restrictions are in force. This is in effect the same concept as the commonly referred to “National Speed Limit which is in place on British roads, where a maximum is automatically set on roads outside of towns. The maximum permitted speed on the secondary road network is now 90 kilometres per hour, for cars, motorbikes, small motor homes and pick-ups, as well as buses (except under certain circumstances), derivatives of cars, and mixed adapted vehicles. In Spain, speed limits are dictated by three elements, the road, the vehicle and the driver (in some cases). Therefore, some vehicles are still restricted further, such as trucks, vans, large motor homes, articulated vehicles, vehicles towing a trailer, and others not listed, which are restricted to a

maximum permitted speed of 80 kilometres per hour on these roads. Bicycles and mopeds are restricted to a maximum permitted speed of 45

kilometres per hour. The change applies only to the secondary road network, where no other restriction is in place, so if there is a sign saying that the maximum permitted speed is 80, or 50, for example, then that is the case.

Similar vehicular restrictions are also in place on motorways, as we can see from the table. It is important to know what classification your vehicle is. Some drivers are also restricted such as may be the case those suffering certain medical conditions, for which the doctor has determined a restriction is necessary. Prior to this change in the speed limit there was some confusion as some roads had different limits depending on their physical characteristics. This change aims to simplify the concept as there is now a uniform maximum permitted speed outside of towns, again, in places where no other restriction exists. Reducing the speed limits on these roads has not been without controversy, with a number of people voicing their complaints about the reduction, this being the first of many reforms we will see this year. Before the end of January this year, more than 100,000 people have been killed on the roads around the world. This is the reality of road safety, the fact that too many people are losing their lives or being injured, every single day, and so long as we, the drivers, collectively fail to make the roads safer, then we can and should expect more legislation which is ultimately aimed at keeping us all safer on the roads.

GBP / EUR UPDATE This week, the pound’s focus was once again on Brexit as parliament voted on amendments to the previously rejected deal with the hope of finding a consensus. Sterling was volatile in the run-up to the vote, falling by an average of 0.2% against the euro, the US dollar and the Swiss franc, and fell after the results were in. The issue was a lack of clarity – all but two of the seven amendments were voted down and the two that passed did little to offer a clearer picture of the way ahead. Those approved were an agreement to prevent a ‘no-deal’ scenario – but with no detail to give that motion any teeth – and a need to find an alternative to the currently proposed backstop at the Irish border, again with no detail as to what that alternative might be. After the vote, the pound was down by an average of 0.6% against a basket of currencies and lost two-thirds of a cent to the euro and the US dollar. The PM clearly has a challenge ahead – the EU remains adamant that no further changes can be made to the deal and yet she must renegotiate in an attempt to find a solution acceptable to parliament. Several European leaders reiterated the EU position that there was no alternative to the current proposal but Theresa May must persevere and in the meantime, the

pound is left in limbo. Any data releases appear to be ignored by the markets; better than expected UK lending and mortgage data and an unchanged reading for consumer confidence had no effect this week. All eyes remain on the Brexit process and the hope that an alternative solution can be found to avoid the government being right back to square one in less than two weeks when the Bill returns to parliament for a vote. A break in the House of Commons in February has been cancelled to allow more time for debate on the matter, but at the moment, there appears little for them to debate unless the EU and the UK – and the warring factions in parliament – can find some common ground. While not in the same precarious position as the pound, the euro also struggled this week. European Central Bank president Mario Draghi announced that the bank had left its benchmark rates unchanged. There was a downbeat tone to the statement; economic data have "continued to be weaker than expected" and risks to growth which have "moved to the downside on account of the persistence of uncertainties related to geopolitical factors and the threat of protectionism".

Seagate Wealth Management

Decade of rate misery S

avers who stashed their money with major banks have lost as much as a fifth of it in real terms over the past decade, and they have been hit extra hard because big banks pay much less interest than other providers. Money Mail research shows low interest rates and the rise in the cost of living since the 2008 financial crash have reduced the value of each £10,000 to £8,000. It is nearly a decade since rates plummeted to their then‐historic 0.5 per cent low, as the Bank of England grappled with the immediate fall‐out of the financial crisis. Savers see the spending power of their money fall if the interest they earn is less than the inflation rate. HSBC has paid 0.05 pc on its Flexible Saver over most of the past ten years, giving £60 interest on £10,000, assuming you added the interest to your account each year — a total of £10,060. But once inflation has taken its toll, the figure drops to £7,980 in today’s money — a drop of just over 20 per cent. If this story sounds familiar, then help is at hand. Here at Seagate, we have a range of flexible, cost effective savings schemes from some of the worlds’ leading product providers, such as Prudential and Old Mutual. The products offered by these companies allow you to achieve the growth you want, but just as importantly are fully tax compliant here in Spain. More and more people are looking for alternative ways to save, especially with banks offering such low interest rates. Seagate can tailor make the savings solution that works best for you and the lifestyle you deserve.

Water features

Running water has a calming effect and the sound is tranquil and relaxing, maybe this is why practically the entire world population feels the soothing effects and a water feature has become so popular in gardens and patios. Whether you opt for buying an affordable pre-made fountain or decide to build your own, you’re bound to get some great inspiration from these gorgeous features that highlight nature’s most important element.

Water wall This outdoor water wall is without a doubt a striking and visually stunning garden project. And the fact that you can make it with your own two hands just makes it so much more attractive. This will cost you around half the price to make this yourself compared to the price if you were to buy it already made.

CostaBlancaPeople 5th-11th February 2019

Recycled water wall If you have one of those round glass-top tables that you’re not sure what to do with, you should really consider using that glass piece to create this beautiful water wall – of course, a square shape would work, too. Repurposing materials will make this an affordable build.

www.costablancapeople.com

Artesian Fountain Small artesian fountains will only take a few days to build. Keep them lower than the example above so it’s not too big a project and doesn’t feel intimating. This design makes use of a gravelfilled reservoir as opposed to a collection pond, so the maintenance on the whole thing will be low.

Stone Pond and Fountain All you really need is one open weekend to create this lovely pond and fountain feature. Internet tutorials lay out the steps very clearly, so the project itself really isn’t that difficult to get done. If you have to buy the stone the whole project will probably cost around 200 euros, but try to get the stone for free so that you can significantly lower your costs. If you really love working with stone, you could also make yourself a fantastic stone fire pit to match. Tiered Pot Fountain This fun project is a nice quick and easy one since you don’t really need all that many materials and tools. Take the time to trawl the gardening stores to find the perfect pots. And if you don’t have too much space and want to downsize, you can always use just two pots (alternatively, you can add another pot if you want it even bigger).

Simple Urn The simplicity of an urn fountain is key, it is a beautiful and eye-catching feature in a garden which isn’t too fancy or overbearing. Just make sure that your pot or urn is specifically designed to remain outdoors so that this will last and make it through all weather conditions.

Slate Fountain You don’t always have to make absolutely everything with your bare hands, you can buy yourself something really beautiful like this fountain that can be kept indoors or out. It’s a solid product that’s really easy to set up, built to last, and emits a very soft and soothing sound of flowing water that isn’t disrupted by the sound of the pump.

Wine Bottle Fountain This is such a creative and fun way to reuse an old wine bottle – and we all have many of these lying around! If you have a big collection of empties you can even make yourself a chandelier. Let your personality shine through with your own selection of decorations.

Madrid introduces free kiddie day care Madrid City Hall has approved free enrolment at public day care centres for children between zero and three years of age. A total of 8,768 children at 69 centres are set to benefit from the measure, which will take effect in the 20192020 school year. The program

a teacher or a profession with vocational training. Currently, the day care rates are calculated based on a family’s income. Families who earn a yearly income of €5,644 or less, pay €14 a month, which is the lowest fee available. In the 2016-

will cost the local government around €1 million a year. Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena hopes the plan will improve early education and help families achieve better work-life balance. Another goal of the Madrid City Hall is to improve working conditions for people who work in early childhood education. Unlike private day care centres, public centres must have two adults present in the classroom –

2017 school year, fees were reduced by 78 percent for families in the lowest income bracket. Since Carmena was elected mayor, Madrid City Hall has invested more than €27 million in building 13 new day care centres in the capital, adding to the 56 pre-existing centres. According to international organizations like the Organisation for Economic Co-

operation and Development (OECD), early education for children between the ages of zero and three has a positive effect on future school performance, especially in children from disadvantaged families. In Spain, 37.9 percent of children between zero and three are in school, above the OECD average of 33 percent. But there are significant differences between Spanish regions. Basque Country tops the country in early education with 52.4 percent of children enrolled in day care. In other regions like the Canary Islands that figure is 16.8 percent. In Madrid, 48.8 percent of children in the zero-three age group attend an early learning centre. Early education between the ages of zero and three is not compulsory. It is the families who decide. The current education law guarantees places to cover the demand for children between three and six years of age. Since 2002, children in this age group have been able to attend early learning centres for free. But this is not the case for children under three. The result is that 1.2 million children between three and six are enrolled in school in Spain (97 percent), compared to 468,652 (37.9 percent) of children in the first age bracket.

WELCOME TO PODGORICA with Vivalia Travel The city is definitely worth visiting, owing to its interesting mix of old and new, its café culture and nightlife, and its laid back Mediterranean atmosphere. Both Montenegrin coastal cities and its mountain resorts are within one hour's drive from the city, so it is an excellent starting point for day trips to anywhere in Montenegro.

Besides being the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica is also the country's largest city, having a population of some 200,000 people. The city is situated in central Montenegro, in the scarce Montenegrin lowlands between Dinaric Alps and Lake Scutari. The Podgorica area has been continuously inhabited since the Illyrian and Roman eras, with settlement on the site of today's Podgorica being firmly established during Ottoman Empire rule. Podgorica was reincorporated in Montenegro in 1878, when the city started to take a more European shape. Nazi and Allied bombings during World War II destroyed much of the historical Ottoman and Montenegro-era Podgorica architecture, and city was reborn as the capital of Montenegro in Socialist Yugoslavia (SFRY). The city was then rebuilt and expanded in a manner typical of Eastern bloc countries, so it is mostly a modern planned city, and by no means a principal sightseeing destination. While not a typical European eye candy, the city is definitely worth visiting, owing to its interesting mix of old and new, its café culture and nightlife, and its laid back Mediterranean atmosphere. Both Montenegrin coastal cities and its mountain resorts are within one hour's drive from the city, so it is an excellent starting point for day trips to anywhere in Montenegro. Frankly, there are only few sights in this old town, in comparison with other cities in Montenegro. • Skaline (the stairs) on the outfall of the Ribnica river to Morača, with its old turkish bridge over the Ribnica, and the ruins of old Nemanja's town. • Monument to King Nikola in the park across the street from the Montenegro's parliament. • Hercegovačka pedestrian street in the city centre. • Trg Republike the central square of the city, next to Hercegovačka street, a lot of life at the end of the day, when people finish to work. have proved really popular, but the new tour of bodega Casa de la Ermita, in Jumilla, offers something for everyone, whether they like wine or beer...or both. This is a great ‘date day’ for couple or groups of friends alike and an opportunity to explore Spanish traditions and culture.” This wine of this bodega has an excellent reputation and is very popular. Casa de la Ermita’s vineyards are farmed under the supervision experts to obtain the best grapes in the Jumilla region. While Monastrell is the most popular variety in the area, Casa de la Ermita has succeeded in adapting to other varieties from different parts of the world, such as Petit Verdot, Merlot, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon. The tour begins with your pick up from one of the local meeting points and travel to the Bodega, stopping for breakfast on the way, which is included in the price. Once in Jumilla the group will be given a guided tour of the old quarter of the city. The tour will be given in English by a local guide, who will point out the hidden gems, as well as all of the heritage and cultural landmarks. On arrival at Casa de la Ermita you will visit the on-site wine museum which tells the story of wine making from a centuries old farming tradition and its evolution into a stateof-the-art science and from there the tour will continue into the brewery which makes artesian beers. Although not as old as the wine making, Casa de la Ermita takes its beer brewing just as seriously and as passionately, both of which can be tasted in the quality of it beers. The tours will be followed by a three-course-lunch of traditional local and regional dishes and, of course, a chance to taste the wines of the Bodega before ending the day at the Casa de la Ermita shop, where you can purchase the delights on offer. The first trip to Casa de la Ermita will take place on 1st March followed by another on 22nd March. Places are expected to book quickly, so please call Begona on 622 188 772 to book your places and arrange a pick up location. The vineyard and wine tasting tours are daytrips like no other – and at just 25 euros per person, are also excellent value for money.

The voice of Freddie Mercury

Unrisen Queen is a Spanish Glam Rock Band founded by Rubén Sabater & Pasku Frutos. Known widely as the best Queen Tribute Band in Europe, Unrisen Queen are kicking off their 2019 tour in Cartagena. The band has been personally congratulated by Peter Freestone (Personal Assistant and friend of Freddie Mercury). Peter said that Unrisen Queen

stands out among the many Queen tribute acts. He also said that lead singer Rubén Sabater’s voice is the closest to Freddie’s he has ever heard. In fact, more than once in the course of the world tours of Unrisen Queen, Rubén’s voice has been described as “The resurrection” of Freddie Mercury. Jim Beach, Queen’s former manager, is quoted as saying “I closed my eyed and could be listening to Freddie. I couldn’t hold back my tears!” The band has been invited to participate in official Queen events across the globe, including a fundraiser in the US

which saw over $56,000 raised for the Mercury Phoenix Trust for the fight against AIDS. Unrisen Queen has performed for audiences of 20,000 spectators across the world in countless venues and after recently finishing a tour of Switzerland, the band is back in Spain and set to perform in Cartagena in February. With thanks to the band, the Costa Blanca People has 3 pairs of tickets to give away to the show, which takes place on Friday, February 8th in Discoteca Tántalo, Cartagena. All you need to do to enter is send your name and phone number to office@costablancapeople.com Winners will be contacted by telephone on Wednesday 6th February. T&Cs apply.

Impossible situation

Seeing a married man

My friend had a one night stand with someone she met on her hen weekend, and she wants me to say she is staying with me while really she sees this other guy. She told her husband I have cancer and she needs to come and look after me! The other day she called me and then passed the phone over to her husband, and he was asking how I was and sympathising with me over my ’supposed’ illness. I felt so awkward that I found myself going along with it just to spare his feelings. How do I get out of this?

I started an affair with an older, married man at work. It’s been going on for 10 months and I’ve fallen for him hard. Whilst he says he feels the same, our affair is conducted in secret, and he insists he can’t leave his wife yet because it will affect too many lives. He doesn’t have children, so I can’t see why we can’t be together, and he says he no longer loves his wife. The deceit worries me, and I do feel for his wife - she's a lovely person and very pretty. There are also times when I know he’s lied to me about being at family get-togethers with his wife. I have always valued honesty, and don’t know what to do.

How appalling! I think if you go along with this lie you will get yourself into a real mess. Don’t allow this woman to manipulate you. She is using you and has no regard for your feelings, and no compunction on cheating on her new husband. I would ring the husband and tell him that you are much better so there’s no need for your friend to come and stay. Then, I suggest you cut ties with your socalled ‘friend‘.

You are basically having an affair with a liar and a cheat. Is this the kind of man you want to settle down with? We all understand relationships don’t always work out, but it’s up the individual to leave for all sakes if a marriage isn’t working. I am sorry to tell you but it looks like this man isn’t interested in committing to you.

id you think about purchasing a property without seeing it in person first? Well, there are many people that actually take the leap of faith and do! And guess what, it was a great decision for them! Thanks to today’s technology, buying a home without physically seeing it first, is more common than you think. If you are thinking of buying a house “sight unseen,” make sure you follow these guidelines: 1. Find a Real Estate Agent you trust. If you don’t trust your agent to give you a truly honest opinion, then this option is not for you. You need them to be your eyes and ears, and not only tell you the good things, but you need to hear the bad things too. 2. Watch the virtual tour. This is a great option, as you can have a better look throughout the home, going through room by room. You can easily see things like flooring to air conditioning units mounted

on the walls. Also, if the home is being sold furnished, you can have the inventory next to you as you scan each room. 3. If possible, have a friend take a look for you. If you have a friend you can trust, then let them give you their honest opinion. They know what you like and can tell you first hand, what condition the property is in. Will it need updating, or is it ready to move into? 4. Most important of all: You need to accept the home will not be 100% perfect. There maybe small things that you won’t like, or need fixing. As long as you are prepared, it will be fine. As it turned out, in every property that I have sold over the phone “sight unseen,” the buyers were delighted! When the property market is busy, and the purchaser doesn’t have the possibility to travel to Spain to take a look at a home for themselves, then the only way to move forward is buying it without seeing it!

Binge worthy Box Sets anthology series like The Twilight Zone, which were able to deal with controversial, contemporary topics without fear of censorship. Brooker developed Black Mirror to highlight topics related to humanity's relationship to technology, creating stories that feature "the way we live now – and the way we might be living in 10 minutes' time if we're clumsy." The series premiered for two series on the British television channel Channel 4 in 2011 and Netflix purchased the show

If you are looking for your latest binge watch worthy box set, then look no further. Black Mirror began as a Channel 4 shot in the dark, but Charlie Brooker’s drama quickly became one of the most bleakly gripping series on TV. Then Netflix jumped in – because clearly a dystopian vision of the future where technology has taken over our lives is just the thing to show on a service specifically designed to keep you watching your screen for

in 2015. A standalone interactive film titled Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was released in late 2018. Bandersnatch allows viewers, using the remote control, to choose the outcome and make choices for the main character. The series has garnered positive reception from critics, received many awards and nominations, and seen an increase in interest

hours on end… Black Mirror is a British anthology science fiction television series created by Charlie Brooke. It examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. Episodes are standalone, usually set in an alternative present or the near future, often with a dark and satirical tone, though some are more experimental and lighter. Black Mirror was inspired by older

internationally, particularly in the United States after its addition to Netflix. Two episodes, "San Junipero" (from the third series) and "USS Callister" (fourth series), won a total of six Emmy Awards, with both episodes winning Outstanding Television Movie. Black Mirror is an excellent sci-fi anthology series, exploring a twisted, high-tech, near-future where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide. Seasons 1 to 4 are currently available in English on Netflix in Spain.

The Incredible Human Journey Kate Humble: Living with Nomads Close

Ben Affleck won't wear Batsuit in new Batman film Ben Affleck is removing his cape for the upcoming rendition in the Batman series. Despite his roles in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and JusticeLeague, the 2021 film The Batman will have a new leading man. According to Deadline, The Batman is scheduled to hit screens on 25th June, 2021 and will reportedly centre around a younger Bruce Wayne. Affleck initially signed on to direct,

co-write and star in the film, but in 2017, he stepped down as director and was replaced by Matt Reeves. "I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply," Reeves said in a statement at the time. "I am incredibly honoured and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the

Caped Crusader to the big screen." The Gone Girl star seemingly recently confirmed on Twitter his forthcoming absence from The Batman. According to IMDb, some fellow cast members include Joe Manganiello, J.K. Simmons and Jeremy Irons. There's no word yet as to who will replace Affleck in the next movie. Jon Hamm, however, might have

some interest. He fits the look, too, with his well-coiffed and slicked back hair. The Mad Men star said in September that he would "probably fit the [Batman] suit." But there's one caveat for Hamm in terms of joining the franchise. He added, "I am a huge comic book fan, always have been...it depends on the story. It all comes down to the story." Around the same time that Hamm

made the pitch about Batman, fellow superhero Henry Cavill stepped down as Superman and hung up his cape. Reeves recently hinted at what The Batman will be about. He told Hollywood Reporter in an interview, "It's very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional."

International adoptions plunge in Spain while surrogacy grows In a little over a decade, the number of foreign children adopted by Spanish parents has plunged from 5,541 to 531, representing a drop of more than 90 percent. The effects of the economic crisis, the refusal by some countries to let same-sex couples

United States. “The surrogacy trend has increased in the last few years, and this rise coincides in time with a drop in international adoptions, which is relevant because surrogacy is also international,” wrote Federico de

adopt, and the long waiting times have been cited as causes for this sharp decline. But new voices are starting to add another reason, which is hard to measure because Spain keeps no official records of it: surrogacy. While the practice is not legal in Spain, hundreds of couples are going abroad to seek the service elsewhere, in countries such as Ukraine and the

Montalvo, president of Spain’s Bioethics Committee, in a recent column published in this newspaper. “The drop cannot be solely attributed to surrogacy, but neither are there any arguments to defend there being no correlation between both trends,” added Montalvo, noting that international adoptions are down everywhere except for countries such as Italy, where the conditions to access

assisted reproductive technology and surrogacy are “especially restrictive.” Adoption statistics are public and compiled annually. The latest Health Ministry report, which uses 2017 data, shows the drop in international adoptions, which in the last two years under analysis have fallen below national adoptions for the first time. There are 6,298 families on an adoption waiting list, and the wait can be upwards of six years. There are very few official numbers to go on when it comes to surrogacy, but people familiar with the situation say that there has been a sharp rise. In reply to a query by the Socialist Party (PSOE) deputy Ángeles Álvarez, the Foreign Ministry said that between 2010 and 2016 there were 979 baby registrations at Spanish consulates and diplomatic missions in 12 countries. Associations raise this figure to more than a thousand a year. The ministry recently admitted to this newspaper that there are around 300 registrations a year in Ukraine, a favorite destination for surrogacy because of its low cost: €40,000 on average compared with over €100,000 in the US. “Our position is that this is not an alternative for those who cannot adopt, but it is true that we have families who have come here after spending time on waiting lists or failing to pass eligibility tests,” explains

Marcos Jornet, president of a support group called Son Nuestros Hijos (They Are Our Children). “We want to collect more information about families, such as the steps that finally lead them to seek out surrogate mothers.” China and Russia were the biggest sources of adopted children in Spain in the early 21st century. But both countries have since established quotas and restrictions that have slashed adoptions dramatically. According to Spanish Health Ministry figures, adoptions in China fell from 2,753 in 2005 to 85 in 2017. And in Russia they dropped from 1,618 in 2004 to 54 in 2017. The Russian government is now encouraging local adoptions by offering money and resources to Russian families who adopt a child. And since December 2014, China only allows adoptions of children with special needs – those with an illness or a disability – or those who are older. Both countries were also among the first to place limits on adoptions by same-sex couples after Spain legalized gay marriage in 2005. “All countries have reduced their quotas considerably, especially for healthy children,” explains Carmen Cano, president of Kune, an umbrella group for four adoption associations from Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia. According to this group, an international adoption can take

anywhere between two and six years. More than half of the minors who are adopted outside Spain are over the age of four. Pushed to suggest These groups also estimate the cost of such adoptions at anywhere between €5,000 and €30,000 in paperwork. The long waiting times and the prospect of adopting “increasingly old children” are pushing families who want a baby to turn to surrogacy, “in the belief that they will have the baby in under a year,” says Cano. “We need to reach those families and make them understand that adopting means keeping a child that is already in this world, that already exists, rather than going after that dream baby.” The PSOE drafted an internal document in November discussing formulas to stop the proliferation of surrogacy in Spain through fines for intermediary agencies and greater hurdles for parents attempting to register babies at consulates. The Spanish government opposes surrogacy, but there are no immediate plans for regulation. The document proposed making “generous and altruistic” adoption easier by “simplifying the conditions, speeding up procedures and encouraging bilateral agreements with other states.”

Can you roar? If you can sing, you might be interested in joining up with the Costa Blanca’s one and only ROAR rock choir. The choir was formed about five years ago as there were so many people who just wanted to sing but without the complications of reading music and having to get their heads around the technical side of it.

Some of ROAR’s members had been in a rock choir in the UK and were missing it whilst living here in Spain, hence ROAR was born. What does it stand for? Relatively Older Adults Rocking (of course). Members are aged between 14 and 82 and the system is quite simple. You listen to your harmony, which is sent to you with just the music by email and learn whilst doing the ironing or in the car. Director Carla Stone said, “We also deal with any vocal

problems that people may have and make sure they are singing correctly and comfortably in their range, it's a great way to gain confidence in your talent no matter what level you are at. The group are very supportive of each other and always help each other out; it’s a great gathering of people with the same passion for singing.” How do the group decide what songs to sing? Carla said, “I usually decide on the choice of songs unless, like right now we are doing inspirational movie songs and each person in the choir had chosen their favourite and are having a go at singing the lead on them whilst the choir do all their harmonies. Again all supervised and with all the help they need. They are all being very brave and I’m really proud of them all.” Carla went on to say, “We have flash mobbed before a few times

for charity and we do a concert at least once a year usually at the Madhouse in Tiro de Pichon. We also sang with the Icelandic choir who came over to perform with us a few years ago and are hoping to pay them a visit soon to do the same.” “We charge 6 euro per session and we understand that people often go back to their homeland for sometimes months but with our email system they can still keep up with their practice wherever they are and no one pays unless they come to the actual choir practice,” she said.

ROAR’s next concert will be in the autumn and they are aiming to be the Choir that gets everyone on their feet to dance! They meet on a Monday evening 6.30 till 8pm at the Madhouse in Tiro de Pichon near La Fuente commercial centre. For more information call Carla on 666551816 or just turn up and say hello.

Jiménez, 2, was pulled out of a 107m-deep well in Totalan last Saturday morning, following almost two weeks of searching for the toddler. Now, as Spain and the world are still mourning the tot’s death, the Guardia Civil are investigating this latest well death in Villanueva del Trabuco. Juan Antonio’s neighbours said that the dog walker took regular trips to the

was an accident or a suicide. “He was a pretty normal person,” a neighbour of Juan Antonio told El Espanol. “I believe that it is unlikely that it was a suicide.” Following the two tragic deaths, experts say that the overexploitation of water has resulted in thousands of illegal wells across Spain, which are often dug to steal water for irrigation.

It is believed that water could have been stolen from the well Julen was trapped in, after the builder who drilled it, Antonio Sánchez Gámez, revealed he had covered the hole. Meanwhile, environmental group Ecologistas en Acción, estimate that 60 percent of wells are dug illegally. Rafael Yus, the group’s president suggested that the ‘mango bubble’ could be to blame for the proliferation of illegal wells. He said: “People search the farms, they make wells and they irrigate in very high places.” The environmental chief claimed that there is a list of the illegal and legal wells in some regions including Malaga. “Only the most visible, which are close to the rivers, are legal, the rest are just holes in the rock,” he added. The Ecologistas en Acción coordinator in the area, Antonio Amarillo also said: “Unsurprisingly, in the last few days we have registered an increase of people who have contacted us to report and denounce the existence of illegal wells.”

Food manufacturers and supermarkets battle obesity

National health authorities have announced a radical crackdown on sugar, salt and saturated fat in supermarket goods, and have managed to get nearly 398 companies on board in its efforts. Around 4,000 packaged products, including ready meals, will be affected by the new scheme, designed mainly to fight obesity. By the year 2020, food producers who have signed up have pledged to slash levels of refined sugar, saturated fats and salt by 10 percent, although the ministry of health says its drive to improve nutritional quality on the high street 'is here to stay' and will 'extend far beyond the year 2020'. Already, the food industry, including manufacturers, the catering trade, distributors and

vending machine franchises have been working on improving nutritional quality for several years, and have been calling for Spain's government to complement their efforts with more campaigns encouraging physical activity. Packaged and processed food is particularly crucial to target, since the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has proven that households on the lowest incomes are the most likely to eat a poor diet and to exercise, both factors leading to a greater obesity problem in the poor than in the wealthy. Figures show that in Spain, 54 percent of the adult population and 40 percent of children are clinically overweight, whilst actual obesity – defined as being above set weight-height ratios

and BMI measurements – affects 17 percent of adults and 18 percent of children. Health minister María Luisa Carcedo says the scheme has been a 'hit' and has praised the 'enormous efforts' of the food industry, especially the 398 firms which have taken the 10 percent pledge. The sugar, fat and salt reductions will affect 13 main food and drink groups including snack items, soft drinks, cakes and pastries, breakfast cereal designed with children in mind, dessert pots such as custard, mousse and similar, meat products, biscuits, ice-cream, juice-based drinks that are not pure or 100 percent from concentrate, packaged rather than fresh bread, ready meals, dairy products, and sauces.

Spain Europe’s top interceptor of cocaine For three decades, Spain has been controlling the importation of cocaine, which has multiplied at an unstoppable rate since Europe’s first drug transportation and distribution cartels emerged in Galicia in north-

western Spain. Police files and statistics reveal telling details on the history of the drug which officially appeared in the country in 1987, when the Interior Ministry began documenting the number of seizures. Since then, and up until 2018, seizures have increased by 5,000 percent, a figure which represents the largest volume of seized drugs from surrounding European countries.

The fight against drugs has taken a tremendous toll on the country, both economically and in terms of public health. For the past 10 years, Spain (alongside the United Kingdom), has ranked first in the European Union for

cocaine consumption. In 1990, it ranked last. Authorities have not yet managed to curb the upwards trend in the past decade, both in terms of trafficking and consumption. In 1987, three years before Operation Nécora, a major police operation against drug traffickers in Galicia, just one ton of cocaine was destroyed. In 2017, police officers destroyed 50 tons, and the figures continue to rise. The

effects of the overproduction of cocaine in Colombia was particularly evident in 2018, when the largest shipment of cocaine on a container ship in Europe was intercepted in Algeciras, and then in Málaga. The two

shipments, which amounted to almost 15 tons of cocaine, came from South America and were hidden among bananas. “The 1980s were a taste of what the future could be like, when Europe was only just beginning to use drugs, and is now a reference point of where we find ourselves today – facing overproduction of cocaine in Colombia which is already considered a crisis,”

explains Antonio Duarte, commissioner of the Central Narcotics Brigade. “We remain cursed by drugs because we are the country that intercepts the most drugs in Europe (almost half of all drugs in Europe) and are one of the world’s leaders in police strategy, and so we cannot lower our guard,” says the commissioner. “There is more cocaine than ever, but we have also managed to deal major blows to the traffickers.” Although the entry of cocaine into Spain via the coast of Galicia was first registered by police in 1987, there is evidence the drug was introduced at least two years before. The profitable tobacco networks stopped smuggling cigarette packets from the fear created by the largest police raid against smuggling. The tobacco business was severely punished, much more than hashish trafficking because cocaine was still considered a silent crime. While the first air transport networks of cocaine were operating in Mexico, dispatching small planes full of drugs produced by the Medellin cartel under Pablo Escobar to the United States, the Galician smuggling bosses were just beginning their maritime operations. Mexico and Spain thus became fertile ground for drug trafficking, causing then unthinkable economic and health consequences, and changing police strategy in Europe and the United States forever. Unlike the first cartels that emerged in Spain to transport and distribute cocaine to Europe, the Mexican drug cartels plunged their country into a

long and bloody struggle for control – not just over the markets and Colombian territories but also over production, which has spread to heroin and marijuana. Despite the setbacks the Galician organisations have endured in the past 30 years, they have managed to maintain a solid and profitable market with the average price per kilogram remaining almost unchanged (€32,000). There are barely four groups left with the ability to ship large quantities of drugs as police pressure has forced traffickers to explore territories and partners in countries new to cocaine trafficking. Turkey, for example, is one of the preferred destinations to buy or rent ships. Battle The next battle against drugs will be led from Spain. It has already been planned In meetings held in midDecember in Bogotá and Medellín (Colombia), attended by Spanish police, the National Police AntiNarcotics Directorate of Colombia (Diran) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Interpol (Dijin). It will be a joint offensive in a bid to control the origin and the destination of the shipments. One of their tactics will be based on international cooperation, trying to find allies in European countries, and, for the first time, in African ones. Spain’s priority is to involve the governments of Morocco, Mauritania and Guinea, who form the main strategic points to hide and ship cocaine to Europe.

New restaurants honoured in local awards IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Virginia Woolf once said: “One cannot think well, love well or sleep well, if one has not dined well.” It is exactly this love of good food that we aim to celebrate at the Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards. The awards celebrate our shared passion – the love of fabulous food. The Culinary Awards aim to highlight and honour all that is good about food and eating out on the Costa Blanca and are a well‐known and well established measure of excellence for local food lovers. The wide range of restaurants and culinary delights available to local diners continues to expand and as more people are eating out more often than in the last ten years, diners are even more spoiled for choice. One of the categories at the forthcoming awards, Best Newcomer 2019,

recognises restaurants open 12 months or less – arguably the most difficult period in any restaurant’s lifespan. Nominations are invited for new restaurants regardless of style – fine dining, cafés and everything in between. In previous years, this award has been won by restaurants such as the Hebridean in El Galan, Off the Square in Los Montesinos and The Chippy in La Marina – all of which showed our judges that in their field, they were an excellent eatery.

Being vegan All through the month of January people were trying out the vegan diet and lifestyle but what exactly is a vegan and what do they eat? There are more vegans than ever before, and throughout the month of January many non vegans have been trying out the diet and lifestyle. But what is veganism and why is it becoming more popular? A vegan is someone who does not eat or use animal products. Unlike a vegetarian diet - where people don't eat meat or fish - a vegan diet avoids all animal products like dairy, eggs and even honey as well as meat and fish. Some people prefer to call this way of eating 'a plant-based diet'. Following a vegan lifestyle also means only using or buying cosmetics and clothes free from animal products. Research by the Vegan Society found the number of vegans in Great Britain increased from 150,000 in 2006 to 540,000 in 2016. Many believe the number of people who call themselves vegans could now be in the millions. Why has veganism become more popular? Many celebrities, including Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and tennis ace Venus Williams are vegans, and they've talked publicly about it raising awareness. There's also been a big rise in vegan cafes and restaurants meaning there's much more choice. The 2018 series of The Great British Bake Off had a 'vegan week' to add to the regular challenges such as 'bread week'. Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood explained: "Veganism seems to be growing and we wanted to represent that." What are the main reasons people go vegan? There are many reasons people decide to go vegan. They include: 1. Animal Cruelty Some people become vegan because they love animals and they think harming any animal is cruel. For vegans, it's not just about animals which are

killed for food, but also concerns about the way that cows and chickens used for dairy and eggs are treated, especially in big factory farms. 2. Environment The United Nations says that farmed livestock accounts for 14.5 percent of all manmade greenhouse gas emissions. This is roughly equivalent to the exhaust emissions of every car, train, ship and aircraft on the planet. Just one cow gives off enough harmful methane gas in a single day to fill around 400 litre bottles, which is really bad for the environment. Another argument used for veganism is that meat and dairy production uses too much land. 3. Health Some vegans say they stopped eating meat for health reasons, but some people worry about getting the right vitamins and minerals from a vegan diet. The British Dietetic Association, which represents experts in nutrition, says that a "balanced vegan diet can be enjoyed by children and adults". However, it also says it is important to plan meals to make sure that it includes enough nutrients.

Best world wines It used to be simple: red wine from France, white wine from Germany. Then the New World started bustling in and before you knew it California, Australia and New Zealand were producing great wines with Chile and South Africa not far behind. Nowadays, it may be difficult to find a country that doesn't make wine. So we've scoured lists to find wines from unlikely sources that are Photo: available to expat consumers through a quick internet search and the click of a delivery button. Now all you need is a glass. Chateau Ksara Merwah 2017 75cl, 12.5%: £13.92, Winebuyers We know that Lebanon produces great red wine but here’s a new and exciting white with a pedigree that stretches back to the Phoenicians. The indigenous merwah grape has been cultivated in Lebanon for thousands of years but has only been used in blends before. Now Ksara has produced an unoaked white made purely from merwah grapes. Dry, vibrant and fresh, it’s a superb aperitif or a wonderful accompaniment to a plate of mezze.

Serge Esteve

Stratus Cabernet Franc 2015 75cl, 13.5%: £22.80, Vinvm From Canada’s Niagra-on-theLake wine area comes a rich red helmed by French winemaker Jean-Laurent Groux who learnt his craft in the vineyards of Burgundy and Bordeaux. They claim it’s a wine made with “minimal handling but maximum patience” and the result is a distinctive cabernet franc with ripe and soft black fruit flavours and striking tannins. If you have the patience, it might be best to open this in the new year or even wait a few more years to experience the full depth of flavour. Chateau Musar 2003 75cl, 14%: £27.99, Ocado An absolute classic from Lebanon.

They’ve been producing wine in the Bekaa Valley since Old Testament times, but its Gaston ochar and his son Serge who put modern Lebanese wine on the map producing red wines 0that blended consault, carignan and caberernet sauvignon grapes and sent wine connoisseurs into raptures. With this 2003 vintage expect layer upon layer of exotic fruits and spices and a whole mouthful of rich, warm and comforting flavours. Soul Tree Nasik Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2017 75cl, 13%: £9.30, Tanners Wines What goes well with a curry? Well, why not try some Indian wine. Launched in 2011 when a group of wine-loving enthusiasts got together with wine growers from India’s Nasik Valley, Soul Tree has quickly developed into an awardwinning winery. Situated on India’s west coast some 100 miles north-east of Mumbai the area enjoys warm days and cool winter nights, resulting in wines such as this sauvignon blanc with its crisp, green fruit flavours and hints of herbs and spice.

F.A.B. news The group F.A.B. (Fighting Against Breast Cancer) has been busy raising funds for the cancer charity AECC (La Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer). January’s charity event was a Cruise wear sale at the Broadway Uptown Quesada. Over 60 women enjoyed afternoon tea followed by a fashion show before browsing through the dresses, shoes and accessories on sale. The event raised over €800 for charity which brings the total so far to €2,000. The money was presented to Maria of the Pink Ladies during the afternoon. F.A.B’s next fund raising event will be a Valentine’s Celebration to be held at the Pines bar and restaurant in Benijofar on 14th February. Tickets are €18.95 and include a three course meal with half a bottle of wine followed by entertainment from Rob Roberts. There will also be a Mr. and Mrs. Competition for those couples who want to test their knowledge of their partner. Tickets are available from the Pines Bar. You can go to F.A.B.’s Facebook page if you would like more information about

future events or to register an event of your own to help raise more funds. Their page is called ‘Life’s Too Short – raising funds for cancer.’ AECC Torrevieja collect money for cancer research and contribute to research projects across 46 centres in

Spain. They also provide advice, information, social activities and practical materials for those affected by cancer. Their offices have recently moved and they can now be found in Calle Apolo, no.55 or by calling 9657 16670 or 686666520.

Pop-in for a tea or coffee at Age Concern Age Concern invite you to their tea and coffee mornings at their centre at Calle Paganini, La Siesta between 10am and 1.30pm from Monday to Friday. The drop in opportunity is part of their campaign to ensure that no one is left feeling lonely and without someone to talk to. Age Concern is known for the vast range of welfare services they provide. However, many people are unaware that it is also open for people to drop in, have a chat and a cup of tea or coffee every morning during the week. The volunteers are there and you can have a one-to-one chat about whatever you choose. The centre also has newspapers available, stocks greetings cards and has a huge selection of books, jigsaws and games that are available to purchase at exceptionally low prices. What most people appreciate, however, is the opportunity to meet and chat with other people.

Loneliness can be a problem as one part of a partnership may die leaving the other feel lonely and isolated. Family might be in another country and friends may have passed on too. Age Concern helps fill the gap between having little to no human contact and feeling part of a community who you can meet with regularly. Age Concern run a number of other sessions that people are welcome to join in with. These include weekly bingo, rummikub and knitting club sessions in the afternoon as well as classes to help you learn the Spanish language. Throughout the year there are day trips and evening events and they can even come and pick you up if transport or mobility are a problem. If you would like more information about the Day Centre and what it offers you can call 966 786 887 in office hours. Or just come along and find out for yourself.

Israeli Scientists on the path to a cure for cancer It doesn't seem possible, but they say it's true. A small team of Israeli scientists is telling the world they will have the first “complete cure” for cancer within a year, The Jerusalem Post has reported. And not only that, but they claim it will be brief, cheap and effective and will have no or minimal side-effects. Accelerated Evolution Biotechnologies Ltd. (AEBi), is a company founded in 2000 in the ITEKincubator in the Kiryat Weizmann Science Park in Ness Ziona, Israel, just north of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. A development-stage biopharmaceutical company engaged in discovery and development of therapeutic peptides, AEBi developed the SoAP platform, a combinatorial biology screening platform technology, which provides functional leads—agonist, antagonist, inhibitor, etc.—to very difficult targets. Still skepticism was high among those in the know. Weighing in on behalf of the American Cancer Society (ACS) on his blog, “A Cure For Cancer? Not So Fast,” Len Lichtenfeld, MD, ACS chief medical officer cautioned: “…it goes without saying, we all share the aspirational hope that they are correct. Unfortunately, we must be aware that this is far from proven as an effective treatment for people with cancer, let alone a cure." “Our hopes are always on the side of new breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. We are living in an era where many exciting advances are impacting the care of patients with cancer,” Lichtenfeld went on. “We hope that this approach also bears fruit and is

successful. At the same time, we must always offer a note of caution that the process to get this treatment from mouse to man is not always a simple and uncomplicated journey.”

Chocolate Lilac Hair Is the Perfect Trend for Brunettes Chocolate lilac hair is here, and it's slowly but surely taking over the world. OK, maybe that's a little dramatic, but this trend is everywhere, and for good reason. Letting whimsical strands of light purple float through a rich brunette mane is the perfect combination of playful and puttogether. It's unique, but not over the

top. Classy, but not boring. There are countless different ways to do this look. You can dial up the purple, giving your strands more of an electric feel, or opt for a lighter shade, giving you the fairy crown you deserve. There's no right or wrong when it comes to a chocolate lilac mane.

DID YOU KNOW? Peter from Cabo Roig asks: Hola Aunty, I’ve just realised that my laptop has Bluetooth already built into it and I’m told I can use this to transfer photos and also backup my phone onto my computer? I discovered I had Bluetooth accidently because I saw a small blue B icon in the bottom corner which I’d never noticed but must have always been there so I clicked on it but how do I start the connection to my phone? I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 10 and a Samsung phone. Aunty Says: Hello Peter. If you click on the “Start” icon then the “settings” cog and then “devices” you will see “Bluetooth” listed in the left column. When you click on Bluetooth you will see some very self explanatory options where you can pair your laptop and phone ready to do a file transfer. Most modern laptops have a Bluetooth connection built in but if you don’t see the Bluetooth option it’s very easy to add a small USB dongle that will set you back less than €10. Ray from Quesada asks: Hello Aunty. Since upgrading my Asus laptop to Windows 10 I am frequently getting more & more messages that I am running out of

disk space but I just can’t see what it is that’s taking up so much space. Is there an easy way I can see what is using up my hard disk drive so I can begin to do some long overdue housekeeping? Aunty Says: Hi Ray. If you type STORAGE into the

search box next to your Start icon and click on the top one in the list you should see a list of your drives, and from here you can investigate each drive. You can use this function to get an idea of what is taking up large amounts of space, and in most cases clearing up temporary files and moving large photos and video folder onto a USB external hard drive will free up loads of space. Peter via email asks: Hello Aunty. A while back I

remember you printing instructions on how to remove annoying adverts from the internet that keep popping up almost every day, some of them are quite rude. This has become almost unbearable in the last month as I have to completely close down Chrome and start again to get rid of them. I have had my laptop serviced by a shop in Villa Martin but if anything it was worse when I got it back and half of my apps had disappeared. The next place for it is the swimming pool so please can you help? I have a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7 Professional Aunty Says: Hi Peter. The two most important things you need to do is to first scan your computer with an updated version of the free Malwarebytes and then download and install a free plugin called Adblock Plus, both of which you can get from www.download.com. Maybe the shop simply restored your computer back to an earlier Windows restore point which probably wasn’t enough to fix an issue like this. That’s all for this week, any questions you can email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I’ll see you all next week.

Changing fonts can save printer ink

Not all fonts are created equal. People create different kinds of fonts for all kinds of reasons: to convey a message, for decoration, embellishment or as iconography. The theory is, if you use a 'lighter' font (with a lighter stroke), you'll use slightly less ink per page. Based on the

assumption that you're only printing with inkjet printers that use the old style cartridges (not ink tanks, and not tonerbased laser printers), you'll likely save about 10 per cent ink by switching to one of the lighter fonts. Of course, the flipside to this argument is that as a home consumer, you'll never print enough volumes to actually see a benefit

What Documents are Needed for the ITV In order for an inspection centre to carry out the mandatory Technical Inspection of Vehicles (ITV), the equivalent to the MOT, you must present certain documents at the test centre. These documents are in order to confirm the ownership of the vehicle, its registration, and the details on any previous inspections carried out. Over time, some of these documents are being replaced by digital versions, and so if your new vehicle doesn´t have the ITV card for example, check with the dealer because it may well be in digital form. In order to have the inspection carried out on your vehicle, you must present the following: The original vehicle technical inspection card, the Tarjeta Inspección Técnica de Vehículos. The original log book, called the Permiso de Circulación. Accreditation of the obligatory insurance of the vehicle (the last receipt to the current of payment will suffice). The ITV must be valid when you drive

on the public roads. Unlike the UK, you cannot book an appointment with a vehicle that does not have the ITV and drive it to the centre. The ITV must be valid in order for you to drive there. If you don’t have a current ITV, then the vehicle must be taken to the test centre on a tow truck, not driven there. Recent change in the law also means that you are able to take your vehicle for the inspection up to a month before it is due, without it affecting the expiration date.

Get Sacked in the morning ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

After the midweek semi-shock of

leaving it late to beat Newcastle. Heung-min Son was back from the Asian Cup and claimed to be very, very tired. He wasn’t that tired though, as he scored the winning goal; a goal that saw Spurs, momentarily, occupy

first ever Chelsea goal certainly suggests he is nearer Iniesta than Jordan Henderson in terms of midfield creation now. Everton were so bad against Wolves that even a black cat invaded the pitch

Man City losing to Newcastle and Liverpool drawing with Leicester, this weekend’s Premier League action was pretty dull. And pretty dull makes finding the funny football news a little more difficult than I would like, truth be known. With leaders Liverpool surely beating West Ham United on Monday night, Manchester City had a chance on Sunday to get themselves back above Tottenham and put a little bit of pressure on King Kloppo’s men once more. And, just like against Newcastle, City led Arsenal within a minute of kick-off when the Arsenal side chose not to take any of the opportunities just to clear the ball as far away as possible, instead opting to allow City a chance to set up Sergio Aguero for yet another strike. But, just like at Newcastle, City failed to keep a clean sheet. Laurent Koscielny’s equaliser was a throwback to the George Graham days with a near-post corner flicked on and then bundled in by the Frenchman.

second place in the Premier League. It was a disappointing end to a good week for Rafa Benitez; beating Peppy G and finally breaking the club transfer record in signing Miguel Almiron. It’s just a shame he didn’t stick Almiron in goal as even he would have saved Son’s shot. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to work miracles at Manchester United. Not only does he remain unbeaten thanks to Marcus Rashford’s early winner at Leicester City, but he managed to find a club daft enough to give them some money for Maurone Fellaini. Yet another reason to give the baby-faced assassin the job full time. Maurizio Sarri insisted that he wanted to ‘see his football’ as Chelsea looked to bounce back from their 4-0 shellacking at Bournemouth. Sarri had admitted that Gonzalo Higuain wasn’t quite in optimum shape yet, but he didn’t seem to be too much of a lumbering carthorse against Huddersfield, scoring twice. Eden Hazard, incredibly, looked like

in protest. In fairness to the cat, he showed such a turn of pace and energy that Marco Silva must have been tempted to throw it a shirt and play it at left back instead of Leighton Baines.

Heung-Min Son

a world-class player once again when allowed to go back and play the role in which he is world-class. Funny that. But, credit where credit is due. Sarri is certain that N’Golo Kante can become the next Andres Iniesta in that midfield position and Kante’s assist for Higuain’s

played in theory. Burnley rolled the years back to 2008 with a few minutes left against Southampton and started hitting it long to Peter Crouch. Yes, Peter Crouch! The big man is back in the Premier League following his transfer from Stoke and it was he that won the penalty that earned Burnley a point. Peter Crouch! Bournemouth eased out of the way to let Cardiff City win on what was

bench to set up the second. If Roy Hodgson can find his crowbar and get Benteke, Batshuayi, Wilf Zaha and Andros Townsend in the starting lineup, there aren’t going to be many teams down there with a better front line. Oh, in theory. And football isn’t

clearly an emotional day in Wales. Brighton against Watford was all about Ben Foster which tells you that Brighton were disappointed to get a 00 draw and Watford were somewhat relieved.

Maurizio Sarri

The cat was on the pitch for minutes and made more intelligent runs than most of the Everton side managed in 90. Wolves won 3-1 and Silva’s tenure at Goodison Park must be hanging by a thread. What’s the betting he has gone

There was no need for City to panic though. I mean, they were playing Arsenal and Arsenal had Mustafi in their backline. There was no way on earth that man was going to stop Aguero scoring again and so it was. The weekend had got underway with Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham

by the time you actually read this? Time is running out for Claudio Ranieri to save Fulham from relegation. They lost, again. This time Crystal Palace were the victors and it was certainly a day for their Belgian contingent. Nobody expects Christian Benteke to actually score, but he nearly did. And it was Benteke who forced the crazy decision that led to Palace’s penalty. Late in the game, new loan signing Michy Batshuayi came off the

RODS & REELS

The 4th round of the Abbey Angling Cup was fished on the river Segura at Murcia on the 29th January. It was a reasonable mild day with the air temperature up to fourteen degrees, although the water temperature is still low, possible due to still carrying snow water, hence the very poor weights. Only three anglers weighed in and only five fish were caught between them. Dave Hutchinson was in first spot with 3.980kgs, second place was Terry Brindley with 3.120kgs and coming in third was Mick Hill with 1.480kgs

We fished the El Bosquet Section A for our 5th round of the Winter Championship on the 30th January. It was a very cold and windy day, making pole fishing presentation difficult, at least the fish were showing today giving the anglers a chance of a better days fishing. Bill Reade showing his prowess and making the most of a good draw, to take top spot with 18.240kgs second place was Neil McBirnie with 12.940kgs and following up in third was Terry Brindley with 7.620kgs

The Scottish Cup (Quaich) is sponsored by our Scottish friends Chris Baillie, Graeme Forrest, Alex Porteous, Donald Main and Andy Ramage, for the first time in five years Alex, Donald, and Andy could not make the competition. Bonalba was our destination for the 22 players, on arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff, the course was in good condition although there was still ongoing work being carried for improvements and the weather was chilly with very strong winds so trousers and sweaters were the order of the day. The format was pairs playing individual Stableford with both players points scored added together. Winners of “The Scottish Cup” (Quaich) was one of the sponsors who scored a magnificent 44 points therefore handicap cutting, Chris Baillie with partner Andy Godfrey with a total of 73 points, runners up were Steve Day and John Mcmillan with 69 points and third place was “The joker” Mick Billins and the

Well, that was a bit of a shock. No, no. Not the fact we lost the Test series. No, that can happen at any time to an England side; especially away from Blighty. But even for an England Test cricket XI, losing a Test series in six days and just under 12 sessions is something of a low. There will be inquests, naturally. And there's about to be one here, too. Just for you. So, shall we begin? I kind of feel like we've been here before, but are you still telling me there are no better opening bat options than Keaton Jennings, Joe Denly and Rory Burns? None at all? Well, I guess there actually can't be as Alastair Cook has batted with pretty much every English qualified opening batsman playing professional cricket and none have stuck. And anyway, I thought Cook had retired to take a break from the game? Yet, Sir Alastair was there commentating on England's shambles. Did anyone ask him if he fancied a game? That would have been proper forward thinking selection by Ed Smith. And selection really has let us down in this series. Where Smith et al were full of maverick brilliance in the summer, they were full of something else in the Windies.

Keaton Jennings came and went and was replaced by Joe Denly who, as the previous paragraph probably suggested, didn't exactly take his chance. It was quite obvious after about twenty overs of the 1st Test that Sam Curran was not a bowler for these Carribean conditions, yet there he was full of youthful exuberance in the 2nd Test. And, shock, he didn't get much of a bowl because he was there to be hit. Mind you, he's not the only English bowler to have got a bit of tap this series. That said, England beat the bat 103 times on day two. 103 times! The problem is, beating the bat doesn't equal wickets. The Windies bowlers opted to hit the bat (and various body parts) quite hard and tore through the England batting lineup four times quite nicely thank you. Stop trying to beat the bat, that would be my advice. Try bowling wicket to wicket. It turns out that Ben Foakes isn't the greatest cricketer that ever lived. Jonny Bairstow has managed to find some doubt again over the number three slot. If Moeen Ali had batted like Moeen Ali typically bats then he wouldn't be in the Ashes squad this coming summer. Our catching, boy was our catching terrible. You get the feeling that once Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad finally hang up their bowling boots they are going to

Harry Goldsmith with Everton winning €40, Harry kindly donated €20 back making £60 for this year’s charities. We would like to thank Antonio, Norma and staff for the great food and hospitality.

Imanyo Golf Society Raises €1200 Imanyo Golf Society started in October 2014 and has now reached the membership of 100 members. We have raised money for various charities each year and in 2018 we decided to support three charities which our members voted for. They were Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T. Animal Rescue and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care. The money was raised with various events, raffles, football cards and extremely kind donations and we managed to raise a fantastic €1,200

“Happy Hacker” Alan Martin with 64 points. Only three of the nearest the pins were won, hole 2 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph, hole 8 Steve Day, and hole 14 “The Joker” Mick Billins. The winner of the football card was

have a fine old time recalling every single dropped catch off their bowling. And, shockingly, there's probably been more drops than wickets and we all know how many wickets these two have. You don't? Trust me, it's a lot. England went to the Windies expecting to rock up and win. Actually, we all expected England to rock up and win. Hats off to Jason Holder's men, they played much better than Joe Root's rabble. Now, can they go on and do it again and again? We shall see. As for England, they have a dead Test to get some pride back and for at least ten of them to do enough not to get dropped for Australia. Back on European soil, the England rugby team headed over to Ireland full of chat about how they were going to topple the greatest team in the Northern Hemisphere and get their World Cup year off to a flying start. Believe it or not, they actually did. Ireland hadn’t lost at home for donkey's years and this England team put in a fine performance to end that run. Naturally, this now means England are the greatest team in the world and will lose to France and, maybe, Wales before this tournament is out. Speaking of the Welsh, they won. And so did the Scots. There was also a big game of that other football in the USA on Sunday night. Someone won, eventually.

therefore each charity received €400. The picture shows the donations being presented to Daya Nueva’s priest Juan Parroco for Caritas Daya Nueva, Jackie for S.A.T.S and the president of A.E.C.C. the donations were presented by Steve Day, Martin Gadney, and Mick Billins, committee members. The golf society would also like to thank Dons Ralph, our main fund raiser.

Quesada Bowls Club In the South Alicante Winter League Quesada Pearls travelled to San Miguel to play the Alsations this week. After a very competitive and close match, the Pearls won on 3 rinks, lost one and drew one. So they won overall 9 - 3 points with the shots 91-88. This means they’ve held on to their 4th place in the league just 2 points behind San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile, Quesada Diamonds entertained San Miguel Beagles at home. Good mornings bowling with some really close scores, 3 rinks were won on the last end, against a very strong San Miguel side. Despite some close games, the Diamonds only won on one rink so the result was a win for San Miguel 10-2. Reflecting the tight match, the overall shots were close at 101-96. The Rubies had a very successful morning when they played Horadada Falcons winning the match 10-2 and the shots 83-55. On Friday, in the Southern League, Quesada Swans were up against Montemar Torreadors, who were on form and held the Swans at bay winning the match 8-4 and the shots 90-84. Whilst Quesada Swifts hosted Country Bowls in an afternoon match. Both teams were on

good form and there were some really tight heads and close finishes. Three rinks were decided by one shot two in Country bowls favour, one won by the Swifts. Overall the points were 8-4 to the Swifts with the shots 97-73. In the Winter league, Quesada played away at Greenlands and won the match 10-2 points, with 91-67 shots. Quesada are currently 5th place in the Winter League and with only 3 points separating 3rd, 4th and 5th places there’s everything to play for in the coming weeks. In the Federated 4’s, Quesada Panthers hosted another of the San Luis teams, the Ospreys. This time San Luis were the victors with 8-0 points and 86-36 shots. At Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk By Dee Stephenson
