The Prime Minister is expected to pledge to MPs that she will return to the Commons later this month and give them another vote on what should happen next. The move is intended to buy time to continue negotiating with EU leaders after her deal was overwhelmingly voted down

Mrs May is engaged in a "cynical" attempt to run down the clock before the 29th March Brexit date in order to leave MPs with a stark choice of accepting her deal or crashing out of the European Union without any agreement. But Downing Street is set to reassure MPs by promising another vote where they can put forward alternative options by 27th February. If no deal on the changes to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement has been reached with Brussels by tomorrow (Wednesday), as seems overwhelmingly likely, Mrs May will address MPs on progress made, say more time is needed for negotiations, and table a "neutral motion" for debate the following day. Sir Keir's new deadline is expected to be one of a range of amendments tabled for votes on Valentine's Day.

BITE SIZE Processionary NEWS: caterpillars spotted Town hall cars have no ITV

Three cars belonging to Torrevieja town hall are currently out of use because their ITV has run out. The cars are 20 years old and should have had their ITV (MOT) renewed in December but instead are parked up and out of service. When asked about this the town hall has pointed out that each department has its own budget which includes money for them to maintain any vehicles they control. Before going for the ITV it is customary for the vehicles to have a check up in a garage. The problem of the vehicle stock held by the town hall isn’t one restricted to ITVs. Recent concerns have been raised about who is responsible for paying fines incurred whilst on town hall business. The age of the vehicles is also a problem. Overall, the current fleet are old. Only the vehicles used by the Local Police are more recent as they are leased out rather than purchased.

Environmental water campaign for schools Torrevieja town hall, in conjunction with AGAMED, has launched the environmental campaign ‘Aqualogía’ aimed at schools in the area. The campaign focuses on primary schools pupils and two hundred pupils will take part from Salvador Ruso (60 students), Virgen del Carmen (90 students) and Cuba (90 students). The schools will receive a 45 minute Continued on page 5

Processionary caterpillars have been spotted in Torrevieja’s natural park, Molino del Agua. They have left their nests in the trees and can be seen now making their way along the ground. Soon they will have buried into the earth and by the end of summer will have turned into moths. In the meantime they remain a real danger to pets and young children.

Dogs are at particular risk from the caterpillars. By touching the hairs on the caterpillars you release thousands of irritants which, if they touch the skin, can trigger an allergic reaction. They can cause respiratory problems and swelling of the tongue and throat, particularly when dogs have come into contact with them. The caterpillars are usually seen towards the end of winter and the beginning of spring. However, each year they seem to be making an earlier appearance. Now, the councillor for parks, Domingo Soler has assured people that the town’s parks were treated for the pest in December. However, the areas that appear to be affected are where the

recreational and play equipment is located rather than in the grounds themselves. The processionary caterpillar is usually found in pine forests, preferring pine trees to build its nest where the moth can lay up to 300 eggs. They then hatch into the caterpillars which have five growing stages. During the third of these they build white cotton-wool like nests. The caterpillars continue to feed on the pine leaves until they reach the last stage when they leave the tree and make their way to the ground. They form a long chain whilst they search for somewhere to burrow below the ground. It is at this point that they are at their most dangerous as dogs and other pets will approach them. The caterpillars are orange-brown in colour with blue bands and this processionary line sometimes crosses paths and other routes walked by dogs and their owners. The caterpillars can also eject the hairs when threatened and these can be picked up by dogs on their paws. They can then be transferred onto the tongue through licking and can make the tongue swell so that the dog finds it difficult to breath. Anyone who takes their pets into the area should be extra alert for the caterpillars and it might be best avoided for walking dogs at this time of year. If your pet should come into contact with them, you should take it to the vets immediately where it might be given a cortisone injection. Suzanne O’Connell

Man who attacked wife with an axe kept in jail

Continued from page 3 lesson taken by tutors supplied by AGAMED. They will visit the schools to talk to the students and demonstrate information about the natural and urban water cycle. Part of the purpose of this initiative is to emphasise responsibility when it comes to saving water and the need to take care of the environment. The lessons will be taught in an interactive way and will support the existing curriculum of the schools. The manager of Agamed, José Manuel Nadal explained; ‘It is essential to introduce the water cycle in the education of even the youngest children. We need to make them aware that water is a natural and finite resource that must be respected and preserved.’

Bullet-proof vests for the police A contract for the purchase of 140 bulletproof vests for the police in Torrevieja has gone out to tender. At a bid price of €109,694 it is hoped to have the vests ready for use in three months time. The police currently have around 20 vests available and the intention to increase the number was first announced in 2016. The threat of terrorist attacks is one of the reasons behind the request for additional protective gear.

Fishing tourism open day Torrevieja is busy promoting its fishing industry. Now an open day has been announced aimed at raising awareness of the initiative in order to develop attractive and comprehensive tourism packages. The open day brought together different businesses and organisations who are involved in promoting Torrevieja as a tourist centre. Travel agencies, tour operators, hotels and even estate agents were involved and found out more about fishing tourism and how their businesses might benefit from it. The day began at 8.30am and participants attended a fish auction and then took part in a fishing trip. The day ended with a meal at the Isla restaurant where participants were able to sample the best sardines. In 2018, 150 tourists took part in the organised activities to celebrate the fishing industry in the town. It is hoped to increase this number in 2019 and add to what’s available with new features such as fish tasting and cooking tips.

Rice cooking competition Torrevieja is one of five towns hosting a rice cooking competition. Open to amateurs, the first stage of the competition took place in Carrefour on Friday 8th February. Altogether 40 adult amateurs and eight young chefs took part in the hour long race to cook the best rice. The winner in the adult category was Javier Villaverde and the top junior chef was Alejandro Pérez. Alejandro cooked a rice with red prawns and the adult winner cooked a meat and vegetable rice dish. On Saturday 16th February it will be the turn of Elche and Sant Joan to host the competition and Finestrat and Petrer have already completed theirs. In total more than 250 people, children and adults, have registered for the competition which is being held across the region. The winners are chosen by professional judges and include sponsors, food journalists and hoteliers. There will be a grand final for the adults held on Continued on page 6

The 83 year old man had allegedly attacked his 76 year old wife with an axe and a hammer in a vicious assault at their home in Torrevieja. The woman, who was seriously injured and taken to Torrevieja hospital, is now recovering from her injuries. The man was arrested by the Guardia Civil and placed in prison

temporarily by court number 1. He was also prohibited from communicating in any form with his wife or coming within 500 metres of her. The court recognised that there were no previous records of domestic violence between the couple who are both Spanish. The man had spent the last 72

Phoenix Band plays for Burns night It was a successful night for the Phoenix International Concert Band as they carried out their first engagement of 2019 at La Marina Sports complex. The band played to support the Burns night celebration and they received a lot of positive feedback from the audience. This was in spite of being down on numbers. Many of the players went home to the UK, Germany, Norway, and Holland for the Christmas break so trying to get as many of them back together for the night was difficult. However, had the whole band been in the room that night it would have been a very tight squeeze. On the 12th of Feb the band will return to play for the British Market in the Plaza of the Marjal International Camping, Catral and they are looking forward to seeing some old friends and followers there. On May the 5th they will be joining with the Dutch de Costa Shanty’s Choir from Rojales to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Holland after WWII. A big event is also being planned in San Miguel De Salinas, so keep an eye out for more information about this. The Phoenix International Concert Band are a not-for-profit band, so any donations received go towards purchasing new music to entertain their

audience, repair broken equipment and support local charities. Even though the band is constantly growing they are still looking for new players to come and join them. Some players are here in Spain only for a few months of the year or have times when they cannot attend. If you’d like the challenge of playing with a growing concert band now is the time to contact them. Ability is not a prerequisite, however being able to read music is necessary. They have players of all abilities and welcome all instruments including brass, woodwind, strings (including guitars) and percussion. The band is an International band so nationality is not an issue and everyone is welcome. If you would like to contact the band for more information on joining or to book them for your venue or event, you can contact the band secretary Stuart Smith via email stuarts494@gmail.com or phone 965998919. Alternatively you can just visit them during their rehearsals every Tuesday from 13.30 to 16.30 below the public library at Biblioteca Publica de San Miguel de Salinas C/ Vicente Blasco Ibanez. You will receive a warm welcome and tea and coffee is available in the break. You can also look them up on FaceBook under “Friends of Phoenix International Concert Band”.

hours since the attack in cells at the Guardia Civil barracks whilst a decision was made by the courts. The attack took place on 1st February at 10am when the woman was hit with several blunt objects and thrown down the stairs of the property where they lived. She has now been released from

intensive care and is recovering in Torrevieja hospital. The couple live in the residential area of Pueblo Centro near the Casa Grande industrial estate. The most severe injury the woman received was the result of a blow to the head with a hammer. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE CHARITY RUN ORGANISED NEWS: Continued from page 5 Saturday 23rd February and for the children on Sunday 24th February.

Town hall fences off hazard A deep pit of ten metres deep is being fenced off for safety reasons by the town hall. The pit was dug to lay the foundations of a new leisure and shopping complex that was planned during the property boom. Since then the plot of land, adjacent to the courts and bus station, has remained abandoned and fenced off by an insubstantial fence. During the recent high winds, the flimsy fence was finally blown down leaving the area exposed and dangerous. After repeated requests to the plot owners, the town hall has taken on the responsibility of fencing off the area itself. However, the situation is far from satisfactory as the fencing of this open plot continues to make it difficult for pedestrians and vehicles to pass by and it remains a hazard. The town council has approached the owners of the site on a number of occasions. They paid 14 million euros for this prime spot but then had to abandon work on it during the economic crisis. It already has a history of accidents with two fatalities linked to it. One of a bricklayer who was working on the foundations and another of a vehicle which fell into hole. Suzanne O’Connell

The councillor for charities, Carmen Morate and the councillor for sports, Victor Ferrández have announced a charity run on Sunday 3rd March in aid of ASIMEPP (Asociación de Salud Integral de Mejoras Psicofisica). This will be the second run that’s has been organised on their behalf. The run will begin from the Casino in Torrevieja at 10 in the morning and you have the choice of taking part by

walking or running. If you choose to walk then it is a distance of four kilometres but the run is eight kilometres. There is also a mini event for children that is even shorter. Councillor Morate has explained that the council are keen to support this type of event that is not only enjoyable for those taking part but raises money for a good cause. Councillor Fernández added his support for this event as one

which brings people together. The president of ASIMEPP, Maite Miralles, hopes that this run will be as successful as that last year. In 2018, a total of 325 people took part and they are hoping to increase this amount to 400 for this year. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease whose sufferers are supported by ASIMEPP. It affects the skeletal muscles and leads to pain and tiredness. Its

GOOD NEWS FOR ALPE The school for children with disabilities, ALPE, has had some good news recently. The councillor for education, José Hurtado, and the councillor for employment, Víctor Ferrández, presented at a press conference their plans to provide practical work opportunities for some of the students who attend the school. The idea is that some of the older students have opportunity to take up

internships in some town hall departments. The school director, Ana Lopez, explained that the idea is to provide work opportunities for those of 17 years and more to assist them in the transition to adult life. ‘What we want,’ said Ana Lopez, ‘is that our students have job opportunities and that the people of Torrevieja trust them.’ These young people have been practising as food

handlers in the canteens of the public schools, Virgen del Carmen and Salvador Ruso, as well as in some private companies where they have been cleaning cars and assembling furniture. ‘We have always wanted our students to have opportunities in the town hall,’ added Ms Lopez, ‘and we thank Victor for giving them this chance. They will not disappoint anyone because they are eager to work and to

cause is unknown and it is important that awareness about it is raised. There will be gifts for those taking part and raffle tickets for a ham will be issued to the first 100 people signing up. be independent.’ The trainees will be accompanied by a tutor who will stay with them as they carry out their tasks and they will also be supported by a coordinator from the town council. Irene Iniesta, works at the schools as head of studies and reiterated the points made by the headteacher. ‘The students are capable of everything,’ she added. Suzanne O’Connell

Moves to repair and maintain sports pitches The councillor for sport, Victor Ferrández, has recently announced that the contract to repair the seven sports pitches in the town, will include their maintenance and the contract has now gone out to tender. The sports pitches are in very poor condition and currently are unsafe for use. In spite of this many children and young people still use them to play their football matches and to hang out with their friends. Although the areas represented a large

financial outlay when they were first constructed, maintenance was not built into the contracts. Consequently over the years they have become more and more dilapidated and even dangerous. The proposed contract now includes their repair and maintenance for at least the next four years. It is hoped that this work will be done before the council elections in May. The contract is reported to be €102,000. The pitches are located in la Plaza de Europa in

Calas Blancas; urbanisation Los Altos; in Torreta III next to secondary school number 5; in Torrelamata and in La Siesta, between calles Strauss and Elgar. Most of the pitches have lost the basketball nets and the goals that were installed in 2010. The sports areas were generally placed in urbanisations with few existing facilities and continue to be important recreational sites in some zones. They have been controversial over the years as they have not been regularly maintained

by the local councils since they were first erected. The work to repair them is expected to take around three months. It will include the replacement of concrete block walls, the repair of perimeter walls, repainting of the tracks, replacing safety nets and supply of new sports equipment. Maintenance will include repair of any breakages or defects with monthly reports to the town council. Suzanne O’Connell

Demolition of town centre building begins The demolition of the building on the corner of calle María Parodi and Ramón Gallud began on 5th February and will continue over the weekend. The demolition is necessary because there were found to be cracks in the concrete beams that could have resulted in the building collapsing. The building has been a ruin for more than a decade and rubble had been falling from it onto the pavement and into the road. The owner had been

asked to either completely renovate the property or demolish it. However, to renovate it would cost more than three times the cost of demolition. The current owners took over the property about a year ago. The four storey building has been an eyesore for some time and is located in a central and important part of Torrevieja. The area will shortly be in the spotlight during the Semana Santa

parades and processions. It is unclear what will happen to this plot of land once the demolition has taken place. This is not the only isolated building that has had to be demolished leaving a vacant plot. Some plots of land have remained unoccupied since before the 2008 crisis. Although the construction industry did begin to return in 2014, it has been a patchy rejuvenation. Suzanne O’Connell

Guardia Civil provide more details about Carl’s death The murder of Carl Aidan Carr is now believed to have taken place in the La Siesta Urbanisation. Carl’s body had been found buried in the wooded area of Hoya Serrano in Rojales after he had disappeared last September after partying in Orihuela Costa. The house where Carl lived with the alleged murderer has been identified as the most likely place where he died following the brutal beating with a knuckle duster. The police also located a 9mm gun during a search but this is not believed to have been linked to Carl’s death. The body was found as a result of new information and was covered by a plastic sheet and buried the day after the crime took place. Buried with him were two empty bottles of bleach that had been used to try and remove all traces of the murder from the car in which he was transported and the house where the murder took place. Although Carl had a drug trafficking background the murder is thought to be linked to a relationship he was having with the previous girlfriend of the murderer and the

mother of his son. Those charged with the murder and its concealment are said to have tried to put the police off the scent by referring to his previous record and describing him as a dangerous person who often got into fights and difficulties. When Carl was reported missing, the Guardia Civil were suspicious that his disappearance wasn’t voluntary. The police’s suspicions were increased when a girlfriend of Carl’s reported that his housemate would not allow her in the house. She claims to have looked in the window and seen that Carl’s room looked too tidy and that there was a strong smell of bleach. In spite of the attempts to clean both the house and the car, incriminating samples have been found. The police focused their investigations around his life, including his housemate and the women who had been with him on the night he disappeared. There were inconsistencies in the reports that the police received from those last seeing him. The only area they agreed on was that they were having drinks, first in Orihuela

Costa and then in Torrevieja. But there was a lack of consistency when it came to explaining the details of their return home. Following further investigations the murder enquiry led to the arrest of four people from two houses and a hotel room. It is believed one of those arrested is the suspected murderer and the other three have been involved in attempting to conceal the murder. They include a Spanish man who helped to bury the body, Carl’s ex-partner and his current partner. In addition to the four people imprisoned since Saturday, an English woman was arrested for giving a false alibi. She has since been released. The guilty parties in the case have been uncovered, according to the Guardia Civil, due to the inconsistencies in their stories and through international police cooperation. The case was first handed to a court in Orihuela but as it transpired that the murder was committed in La Siesta, the case was transferred to Torrevieja’s courts. Suzanne O’Connell

Have we got our own microclimate? It has long been talked about and now it is being investigated. Exactly what is the impact of the two salt lakes on local weather? A climate study is about to take place and was announced by Councillor Fanny Serrano in conjunction with the manager of Agamed. ‘It will be a detailed and scientific study which will provide information about the climate surrounding the natural parks,’ explained Councillor Serrano. It is a popular belief that the two lakes create a kind of microclimate in the area. However, there have been no official studies around this until now. The study will include the collection of data in different parts of the park and Torrevieja to observe the differences and see just what impact these two huge lakes do have. Don’t expect the results any time soon. This is a long term study that

will take between five to ten years to collect data and longer than this, even up to 30 years, to arrive at conclusions. However, we are reassured that there will be some preliminary findings that might be shared in the meantime. Already, there are some observations being made about differences in data. There are six meteorological stations where data is being collected from.On November 19th, it was noted that Torrevieja registered more than 100 litres per square metre of rainfall in a few hours whilst the area of the park only registered 25 litres per square metre. The project also includes the instillation of a webcam that shows images of the La Mata lake environment through the internet. Suzanne O’Connell

BENICONNECT

SPECIALISTS IN PROVIDING AIRPORT AND TRAIN STATION TRANSFERS

Beniconnect is the leading provider of airport transfers on the Costa Blanca. This young innovative company were the first to offer exclusive and distinctive shuttle services from Alicante Airport to all areas of the Marina Baixa, Marina Alta and Vega Baja.

They were the first company to launch the Express Connect Shuttle, offering their customers a fast, efficient shuttle transfer service, with minimum waiting time at the airport and a guarantee of no more than four stops at very affordable prices. This was first offered for the resorts of La Cala de Finestrat, Benidorm, El Albir and Villajoyosa. Leading on from its success they then launched the Express Connect 6 which included the resorts of Alfaz del Pi, Altea, La Nucia and Polop. Following lots of market research their next success was the launch of the Costa Connect Shuttle. This shuttle service connects with the resorts of Denia, La Xara, Javea, Moraira, Benissa Costa and Calpe. Never ones to rest on their laurels and always looking to provide transport solutions to meet demand, in 2016 they

recognized the need for launching a new shuttle service. For years Alicante train station has not had any direct connection to the popular resorts of the Costa Blanca, hence the introduction of our Alitren Connect Shuttle an exclusive service that is only offered by Beniconnect. Their aim is to provide a reliable connection from Alicante train station to the popular destinations of Benidorm, Albir, Altea and Calpe. It is a shared service whose schedules vary according to the needs of our customers. In May 2018 Beniconnect improved its transfer portfolio by launching a new shuttle service to and from Alicante airport to the South of the Costa thereby allowing easy airport connections for both residents and tourists in the south. It is the only company that offers a daily service, seven days a week, all year

round to the Vega Baja. This new shuttle service calls in at San Pedro Del Pinatar, Pilar de la Horadada, Dehesa de Campoamor, Cabo Roig, Villamartin, La Zenia, Playa Flamenca, Torrevieja and Ciudad Quesada. They have recently just added two new stops to this service, GUARDAMAR DEL SEGURA and LA MARINA URBANISATION. By using customer feedback this service is being constantly reviewed and improved by increasing the number of stops and resorts that are on offer and thereby ensuring that as many customers as possible have the opportunity to use this new daily shuttle service. Beniconnect continues to be the leaders in airport and train station transfers on the Costa Blanca, and promise to deliver new and exciting new services in the near future.

World Cancer Day ach year on 4th February, World Cancer Day gives people across the world to show support, raise a collective voice, take personal action and press governments to do more. World Cancer Day is the only day on the global health calendar where people can all unite and rally under the one banner of cancer in a positive and inspiring way. Each year 9.6 million people die from cancer, that’s more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. By

E

more progress we can make in reducing risk factors, increasing prevention and improving cancer diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and care. To mark World Cancer Day locally, Maria and the Pink Ladies joined forces with Zenia Boulevard to raise awareness and to raise funds for Spanish anticancer charity AECC by hosting a special event at the landmark shopping centre. Centre management provided tulips to give to each member of the public who made a donation and Maria and the

2030, experts project cancer deaths will rise to 13 million. However, more than one third of cancer cases can be prevented. Another third can be cured if detected early and treated properly. By implementing resource-appropriate strategies on prevention, early detection and treatment, up to 3.7 million lives can be saved every yea Today, we know more about cancer than ever before. Through investing in research and innovation, we have witnessed extraordinary breakthroughs in medicine, diagnostics, and scientific knowledge. The more we know, the

Pink ladies and Panthers were at Zenia Boulevard manning a stall with a range of branded goods for people to buy – with all the money going directly to the charity. There was a full days entertainment with some of the best performers on the coast, once again performing free of charge in aid of a very good cause. These included: Grace Coughlin, Cindy Fitzpatrick, No Limits duo, David John Williams as Rod Stewart, Tony Jones, Zacuzzi duo, Nigel Burchill as Elvis, Diane Diaz, Alan Scott as Neil Diamond. The artists were supported by Sunshine FM and the

event was compered Stevie Spit. The Pink Ladies were also promoting the AECC’s Early Detection Program and booking cancer screening appointments for members of the public. Early detection is vital to cancer survival and the subsidised programme

is a key part of the service provided by the AECC and is open to men and women to test for a range of cancers such as skin, prostate, bowel, breast, ovarian and cervical. Maria and the Pink Ladies together with members of the public present, held a minutes silence for those who have survived cancer, are still fighting cancer and of course those who have sadly lost their lives to cancer. There was a total of €1,033,69 raised on the day, every penny of which will be donated to the AECC to help fund the early detection program and anti-cancer research.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

A

s PM Theresa May visited leaders in Ireland and Brussels in a bid to find a solution to the tricky question of the Irish backstop and get the Brexit deal over the line, investors had their focus on the ecostats. Unfortunately for sterling, many of the numbers fell short of expectations and the reprieve from Brexit and shift of focus wasn’t that positive. Manufacturing PMI came in at 52.8, lower than forecast and a point and a half lower on the month. The construction PMI was 50.6, the softest reading in ten months but there was some good news in that retail sales were up 1.8% from the same month last year and total sales increased by 2.2%. Given the importance of the sector on the UK economy, the service industry PMI came in for particular scrutiny and it came in at 50.1, only a tick above the breakeven level. The report had no redeeming features, with new orders and staffing levels declining. It did not come as a total shock to learn that "survey

respondents overwhelmingly linked the slowdown in business activity growth to heightened political uncertainty". The quarterly inflation report from the Bank of England was as expected; growth forecasts were downgraded and the market expects no action on interest rates until the Brexit deal is resolved one way or the other. There was little good news in Europe either. Euro zone investor confidence slipped two points to -3.7 and Italian inflation slowed from 1.1% to a provisional 0.9%. The Eurozone does appear to be holding steady, however and this week there was another reassurance from the European Central Bank that Europe is not heading for recession, this one from Austria's Ewald Nowotny. The European Commission released their updated growth forecast and the number had been downgraded to 1.5%. The euro mostly managed to keep its head above water but it’s clear that the global slowdown is adding pressure across Europe.

Carnival reminder Carnival events are now well underway. The launch of Torrevieja’s 2019 carnival began on 2nd February with the coronation of the junior and senior carnival queens. The final event in this year’s festivities will be held on 3rd March when the evening procession takes place. It is one of the main events in Torrevieja’s calendar and has grown in size and popularity each year. The junior queen this year is Ángela Ferrández Gómez and the senior queen is Paola Fernández Saura. Both are from the dance group or ‘comparsa’ Puerto Rico. On the evening of the 2nd February a special presentation was made to Julio Melchor Ruiz Vidal for his 20 years of dedication to Torrevieja’s carnival association. The 9th Gala Drag Queen event took place on 9th February. This was also held in the International Auditorium in Torrevieja and is to be followed on 16th February by the National Chirigotas

competition. The chirigotas are satirical groups of singers and actors who produce and perform satirical songs during

carnival time. On February 17th those taking part in the carnival will have opportunity to enjoy themselves in La Plaza del Sagrado Corazón with a giant paella and raffle. The run up to carnival provides some interesting spectacles but what most people associate it with is the carnival procession. There are two main parades, one during the daytime and one at night. On Sunday 24th February

around thirty local groups will display their finest on the traditional route along calle Ramón Gallud until the Plaza de la Constitución. This procession will set off at 5pm. On Saturday 2nd March the procession will be repeated but this time in the evening. For the first time this year there will also be a ‘Concurso de Comparsas Foráneas’ leading the parade which will set off at 7.30pm. After the procession is over there is a big party in the Plaza de la Constitución where the awards will be made. Another new event this year is the ‘Carnaval de los coles’ this will include a parade of school children representing their primary schools. There will be plenty of music and fancy dress on display. This will take place on 1st March, setting off from the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre at around 5pm. The parade will finish in the Plaza de la Constitución where there will be chocolate treats and entertainment for the children. Suzanne O’Connell

Spanish Tax Agency warns businesses about no-deal Brexit The Spanish Tax Agency has launched an information campaign ahead of a possible nodeal Brexit. Thousands of export companies have been sent letters with recommendations on how to adapt to the situation should the United Kingdom exit the European Union on 29th March without an agreement on future relations. The two-page letter reminds companies that in such a scenario, once the UK leaves the EU trade flows between Spain and Britain will cease to be considered internal European transactions, and will be subject to customs formalities. “Brexit could have a significant effect on your organisation and its logistics flows,” warns the letter. “On 29th March, the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU will become effective. If there is no exit agreement that includes a transitional period, this will mean that on March 30 the UK will leave the single market and the customs union,” explains the agency in its message. If there is a no-deal Brexit, it will entail new customs and tax obligations for companies that do business with the UK, such as providing added information

about value-added tax (VAT) and special duties. The agency notes that imports from the UK will be subject to VAT, but not so exports. A report by the Spanish export and investment agency ICEX shows that the number of Spanish companies selling goods to the UK grew by 8 percent between 2012 and 2017, for a total of 11,695 businesses. This upward trend experienced a reversal in 2017, when the number of Spanish exporters to the UK fell by 0.8 percent. Britain was the fifth top destination for Spanish exports in 2017, after France, Germany, Italy and Portugal, and down from fourth place in 2016. Total exports represented €18.9 billion, according to ICEX’s data. Customs control “From the point of view of customs, the new formalities would include filing an import/export form or similar document for every shipment, as well as dealing with customs checks, payment of tariffs and other duties, and the need to obtain health and quality certificates, or other similar kinds of documents, in order to sell your goods,” explains the letter.

The director of Spain’s Tax Agency, Jesús Gascón, said last week in Congress that his department is preparing a contingency plan for Brexit that includes more staff at places such

as airports in Alicante and the Balearic Islands, where there will be added passenger and item checks. Nerea Rodríguez, the deputy director general for customs management at the Tax Agency, said that they are working with Aena, the Spanish airports operator, to set up more comprehensive controls at airports with large numbers of visitors from the UK and non-EU countries. Rodríguez said that there will also be more offices set up to help visitors from third countries claim back VAT on their purchases.

WELCOME TO NAUPLIA with Vivalia Travel Nauplia or Nafplio is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf

Geography Nauplia is situated on the Argolic Gulf in the northeast Peloponnese. Most of the old town is on a peninsula jutting into the gulf; this peninsula forms a naturally protected bay that is enhanced by the addition of man-made moles. Originally almost isolated by marshes, deliberate landfill projects, primarily since the 1970s, have nearly doubled the land area of the city. History Tourism emerged slowly in the 1960s, but not to the same degree as some other Greek areas. Nevertheless, it tends to attract a number of tourists from Germany and the Scandinavian countries in particular. Nafplio enjoys a very sunny and mild climate, even by Greek standards, and as a consequence has become a popular day or weekend road-

trip destination for Athenians in wintertime. Nafplio is a port, with fishing and transport ongoing, although the primary source of local employment currently is tourism, with two beaches on the other side of the peninsula from the main body of the town and a large amount of local accommodation. The building of the National Bank of Greece is probably the only one in the world to have been built in the Mycenaean Revival architectural style. Architecture and urban sculpture Acronauplia is the oldest part of the city though a modern hotel has been built on it. Until the thirteenth century, it was a town on its own. The arrival of the Venetians and the Franks transformed it into part of the town fortifications. Other fortifications of the city include the Palamidi and Bourtzi, which is located in the middle of the harbour. Nafplio maintains a traditional architectural style with many traditional-style colourful buildings and houses, partly influenced by the Venetians, because of the domination of 1338-1540. Also, modern-era neoclassical buildings are also preserved, while the building of the National Bank of Greece is an example of Mycenaean Revival architecture. Around the city can be found several sculptures and statues. They are related mostly with the modern history of Nafplio, such as the statues of Ioannis Kapodistrias, Otto of Greece and Theodoros Kolokotronis.

Santander shuts UK branches as online banking surges Santander is to shut almost one fifth of its British branches following a surge in online banking, the Spanish group reported. Santander said it would close 140 branches, affecting 1,270 staff, of which about one third would be offered alternative roles in the company. It meanwhile plans to retain 614 branches across the UK. “The way our customers are choosing to bank with us has changed dramatically in recent years, with more and more customers using online and mobile channels,” said Susan Allen, head of retail and business banking at Santander. “As a result, we have had to take some very difficult decisions over our less visited branches, and those where we have other branches in close proximity,” she added in the recent statement. Santander said that the number of transactions carried out via Santander branches had dropped by almost one quarter in the last three years. Transactions via digital channels had doubled over the same period. “We continue to believe that branches have a vital role to play and we will be refurbishing 100 of our branches over the next two years,” Allen added.

Madrid taxi drivers call off strike Terror attacks in Spain ‘very likely’ The UK foreign office has updated website to report it believes terrorists ‘very likely to carry out attacks in Spain’. The warning is addressed to all British travellers to the country and is an escalation in the status of terror attacks in Spain. The government department updated its website recently to say ‘terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Spain’. There was no reason given for the update, but the FCO say Brits ‘should be vigilant and follow the instructions of the local authorities’. The most recent terrorist incidents cited by the FCO in its advice are the Barcelona attacks of 2017 in Las Ramblas and Cambrils, which killed scores of people. It also comes as police on the Costa del Sol in Manilva arrested a suspected ISIS terrorist last week. Authorities busted the apartment of the 27-year-old from Morocco and foiled his planned attack on the local feria. Meanwhile, a local Muslim leader condemned the planned attack as ‘crazy’ and said the suspect was not a real Muslim.

Madrid’s taxi drivers have voted by a narrow margin to end the strike action that lasted 16 days and was called to demand regulations for private hire vehicles known in Spain as VTC, which are used by ride-hailing applications such as Cabify and Uber. A total of 20,961 drivers from the sector were called upon to vote, of whom 7,843 cast their ballot. Around 54 percent of the valid votes supported an end to the work stoppage (4,223 drivers), compared to 45 percent who voted to continue (3,522). The heads of the five collectives that called the stoppage admitted that the margin of votes against was very low. “The fact that we have been inactive for so many days and that many people have taken out loans to buy their licenses has had a large effect,” sources from the Professional Union of Taxis (6,000 licenses). “They couldn’t take much more of this.” “There are people who have had to make use of micro-loans or help from their families to be able to survive these recent days,” added sources from the Professional Taxi Federation (6,000 licenses). “That’s really tough.” Despite not having reached a deal with the regional government, unlike their colleagues in Barcelona, the organisers of the Madrid stoppage did not consider the industrial action to be a failure. “We have managed to unite all of the professionals and associations in just one name: the taxi,” said the president of the Professional Taxi Federation, Julio Sanz. “It wasn’t a failure,” added Felipe Rodríguez Baeza, the president of the Madrid Taxi Association (1,300 licenses).

“The stoppage has been exemplary and we have reduced our demands with the Madrid regional government, which has refused to listen to us.” In Barcelona, cab drivers also staged stoppages, and managed to achieve concessions from the Catalan regional government, which promised regulations forcing passengers to book their journeys with services such as Uber and Cabify 15 minutes in advance. This prompted both the companies to announce that they were pulling out of the city, costing around 3,000 people their jobs. The Madrid regional government, run by the conservative Popular Party (PP) with support from centre-right group Ciudadanos (Citizens), offered the taxi drivers a new decree that would regulate the sector, without specifically legislating on VTC vehicles for fear of negatively affecting their business or prompting job losses in the sector. “They insulted us,” said the president of the FPT. “They belittled us in the most vile and cowardly way, as well as going back on everything that they had said in the previous days,” he continued. “The collective has learned which party it can count on, and which it can’t. We have suffered the total contempt of the PP and

its partner Ciudadanos. We hope that they suffer the consequences at the ballot boxes.” Sanz added that he considered the PP to be “the most corrupt party in Spain.” Inconvenience The organisers of the strike apologised to their customers and to Madrileños in general for the inconvenience the stoppage has caused. “We hope to be able to pay them back soon for everything that has happened,” leaders in the sector said. More demonstrations are planned, however, with a protest scheduled for Saturday near Atocha train station to call for an end to the “uberisation” of transportation in the region. The Madrid strikes began on Monday 21st January at 6am. The main protests saw the cab drivers block off IFEMA, the capital’s main exhibition centre, during the FITUR tourism fair. They also parked on the central Castellana boulevard over the weekend, and held demonstrations in the central Puerta del Sol square, and outside the headquarters of the PP in Génova street. One cab driver was seriously injured when he was hit by a VTC vehicle during a protest on one of Madrid’s freeways.

Playing the victim

Why do I miss home?

My friend told me that she can’t help me any more because I won’t help myself, and this the reason why I lose so many friends and family members. She said all I do is complain about my own bad luck, and even when things are going right I find something to moan about. She even said that I enjoy feeling sorry for myself! Finally she said that I am never genuinely interested in her or anyone else, and that I fake it - my mind is always on me, and that I quickly want to bring the conversation around to myself. She said that all I want is a ‘there there, never mind’ kind of a friend and that’s not her, and she’s had enough of being used and feeling drained.

Spain is great and we are very happy here, but lately I am thinking about England a lot. A miserable life before meeting my partner, meant there was nothing to keep me there, and so we moved. Now, after a few years here in Spain I am beginning to long for all the lovely seasons in England, the shops, family etc.

There is such a thing as victim’s mentality disorder. Take a long, hard look at your behaviour and see if your friend has a point. Most people want to pursue happiness, and if a person wants to change and feel better, they would benefit from specialised therapy, otherwise they risk ending up very lonely people.

It’s not unusual to have the feeling of the grass being better on the other side of the fence, indeed that may be why you moved to Spain in the first place. You may be viewing dear old England through rose colour spectacles as the weather is seldom good, but there are times when even I miss Marks & Spencer, and Sainsbury’s! Trips back to the UK don’t always feel like holidays, but if you miss home go back and visit when you feel the need. Also, if you haven‘t had a proper holiday in a while, organise one. Everyone needs a holiday from their present life no matter how good it is, so go somewhere you haven’t been before and shake things up a bit.

Tourism boost

Spain has raked in €90 billion from tourism in 2018 after sixth record-breaking year in a row, and mostly thanks to the British. A huge 82.8 million foreign tourists visited Spain in 2018, new figures have revealed. Beating 2017’s figure by 1.1 percent, it was the sixth record-breaking year in a row for Spain, despite renewed competition from the likes of Turkey, Tunisia and Greece. The huge number of visitors also spent €89.9 billion in the country, a 3.3 percent increase

on the year before, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). The figures are a positive sign for the industry, showing that visitor numbers are not expanding massively and risking over-saturation. Meanwhile, the amount of money tourists are spending is increasing healthily with the average daily spend by individual tourists growing 7.4 percent to €146. And despite the number of British visitors declining by 1.6 percent, they were by far the

biggest foreign group with 18.5 million visiting Spain in 2018. The number of Germans dropped by 4.1 percent to 11.4 million while Scandinavian visitor numbers also dropped by 0.7 percent to 5.7 million. Spain was able to pick up the slack thanks to a spike in other markets. Visitors from the US grew by 11.8 percent to reach just under three million while Russian tourists jumped by 6.3 percent to 1.2 million.

Do home improvements add real value?

henever you’re deciding on an upgrade, you need to think of the bigger picture, not the immediate solution to your family’s lifestyle and needs. Some upgrades will add value to your home, whereas others are not worthy contenders. This time of year, if you only have an open balcony, you’re probably struggling to find somewhere warm to sit during the day, especially if you don’t want to turn on any heaters inside the home. Let’s face it, these homes are built to keep the heat out, not in! A great addition to your property, would be to add on a “Sun Room.” This is usually created by installing windows to an existing balcony. As this is what is categorized as a “removable” type of construction, full planning permission shouldn’t be required*. This is a worthy upgrade, so it gets a thumbs up from me! You need another bedroom, but the only access would be through one of the existing bedrooms. This may seem like no big deal for your family dynamics, but for any future buyer, this could be the deal breaker. If you are going for an upgrade by building on an additional bedroom, having to pass through one bedroom to get to the other is not practical. If this room doesn’t have a window, it can’t even be classed as a bedroom when the time comes to sell. This is not a worthy upgrade, and gets a thumbs down from me! Bathrooms and kitchens. These are the most popular upgrades any

W

homeowner can make. But be careful not to get “carried away” with going for the most elaborate style. If your upgrade is a large investment, it could take quite some time to recuperate that money. I once saw an extravagant kitchen that cost more than the whole house put together, making it practically impossible to ever recuperate the money invested! Be careful not to overspend. Buyers love updated kitchens and bathrooms, so as long as they are a sensible upgrade, they get a thumbs up from me! Tiles. International buyers love the tiles Spain has to offer. Spain is well known for its ceramics, so if you’re going to upgrade your kitchen and bathroom, make sure you get rid of the out-dated wall and floor tiles as well. Upgrading sanitary ware in the bathroom and new cabinets in the kitchens are great, but if the original tiles stand out like a sore thumb and do not match your new room it will not give you the full value you’re looking for in your investment. Updating tiles as part of an upgrade, gets a thumbs up from me! Some upgrades do add value, but not guaranteed! Sometimes the best upgrades are to sell and buy a home with an extra bedroom already built, or at least with enough room to build a bedroom with its own access! So when you’re planning on any upgrades, take a minute to answer my question to you. “Is your project not only going to make your home more comfortable, but will it add value to your investment too?” *Always check with the relevant Town Hall, Architect or President of your community, on any possible planning restrictions in your area. Danny Dyer admits to smoking crack Danny Dyer has admitted that at a young age he smoked an extreme amount of crack. Back in 2001 when the EastEnders star was 24, he bagged a role in Harold Pinter’s Celebration in New York no less. Opening up to the i newspaper, the 41-year-old explained how his drug use affected his performance. Looking back he told all about how his mind went blank on stage: “I was

abusing myself so much my brain wasn’t ready and I didn’t have a clue what to say. “The blood rushed from my feet to my head and I was petrified. I felt so vulnerable.” Seeing the mess he was in, the show’s director spoke frankly to the Human Traffic actor, saying he did approve of the company Danny was keeping.

Being young, rather than taking his boss' advice, Mr Dyer’s reaction was to hit out, saying: “You’re not telling me who I can hang out with.” Learning from his mistakes through the years, the London-born lad said that he now works to two rules, making sure he curbs his ego and nourishes his soul. Talking about the dark place he was in back then, Danny explained how he

had nobody to stop him: “I was slowly committing suicide. I had no hope, I hated myself. It got to the point where I thought I was going to die – I didn’t think I was going to wake up.” This comes shortly after his daughter’s boyfriend Jack Fincham admitted to binging on cocaine and had expressed his dread about facing Danny once it had all come out. The former Love Islander said he had been

tempted by the high-end drug since rising to fame. Fincham told how his girlfriend Dani had warned him off the drug and asked him never to do it again. The reality TV star revealed he gave in after he was offered it for free while drunk from booze. Not long after snorting the powder, the former pen salesman expressed that it was a “terrible, terrible error.”

Katie Price considering putting son Harvey into care Katie Price has said that she may be forced to place 16-year-old Harvey Price into residential care because he has become a "danger to himself". The Loose Women star said: "He's a danger to himself. For the first time ever, I’m thinking he might have to go [into] residential [care] Monday to Friday. "He knows if he kicks off in the

morning, the driver won’t take him to school. So he’s sussed that and he’s missing out on his education." She continued: "It's so hard. I’ve never had respite, I haven’t got a carer with him, I do it all myself. But I’m really having to think about it. "I hate it, because he’s my life. Do you know what I mean? But I’ve got to do what’s best for him but it won’t be

forever." Katie added: "When he’s smashing things, and the kids are scared of him because he’s big, he’ll chase them and stuff. I’ve just got to do it for him. "If there’s anyone out there who could give me some advice on what it’s like and how to cope when they go in residential… We’ll find it really hard." Katie revealed Harvey has

smashed up windows, TVs and eight iPads in the house as a way of acting because he wants to spend more time with her. Harvey is partially blind, autistic and has Prader-Willi syndrome. The mum-of-five went on This Morning last month to reveal she is planning to adopt an orphan from Nigeria.

She told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that she got the idea from a woman in a nail bar who works for a Nigerian orphanage. Katie admitted that she was supposed to fly to Nigeria the weekend before to make arrangements, but couldn't because she was due to look after her children.

Liam Neeson film’s red carpet event cancelled amid racism row

The New York red carpet opening of Liam Neeson’s latest film has been cancelled amid a row over his comments that he once wanted to kill a random black man after someone close to him was raped. Reporters were told the red carpet part of the Cold Pursuit premiere was being pulled with just two hours’ notice. Neeson has denied he is racist but the remarks sparked an outcry. He said he had wanted to start a wider conversation about racism. The Hollywood star was speaking to The Independent to promote Cold Pursuit, a revenge thriller. In the interview, he said the alleged rape took place a long time ago and went on to use racially offensive language about the attacker. He said: “She handled the situation of the rape in the most

extraordinary way. But my immediate reaction was ... I asked, did she know who it was? No. What colour were they? She said it was a black person. “I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be approached by somebody - I’m ashamed to say that - and I did it for maybe a week, hoping some (uses air quotes with fingers)’black b*****d’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could kill him.” He didn’t go through with any violence, and added: “It was horrible, horrible, when I think back, that I did that ... it’s awful. But I did learn a lesson from it.” However, after widespread criticism, he told ABC’s Good Morning America: “I’m not racist.” Asked what he wanted people to take from his experience, he told the host: “To talk. To open up. We all pretend we’re all politically correct in this country ... in mine, too. You sometimes just scratch the surface and you discover this racism and bigotry and it’s there.” He said learning of his friend’s rape about 40 years ago - she has since died - gave him a “primal

urge to lash out”. The actor said he “went out deliberately into black areas in the city looking to be set upon so that I could unleash physical violence”. He said he would have acted the same had his friend’s assailant been white, but admitted he had been “shocked” by his own response. Response In response Kehinde Andrews, a professor of black studies at Birmingham City University, told the BBC Neeson’s comments were “completely inappropriate and offensive” and to make them as he promoted a film was “distasteful”. Playwright and author Bonnie Greer said Neeson had “probably put paid to his career”. But former England footballer and anti-racism campaigner, John Barnes, defended Neeson during an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live. “He was ashamed a week into it. He understood that he was wrong for thinking what he did. And we have to have this conversation.”

Quality dining in Los Dolses The Ole Bull was once the flagship of the Los Dolses Commercial Centre and now former Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards Chef of the Year Robert Johansen has not only reopened the restaurant but is dedicated and determined to take it to new heights. Chef Robert may well have four well-known and much loved restaurants in the area, but Ole Bull has always held a special place in his heart. In 2002 it was this restaurant that he built and opened on behalf of its then owners. The restaurant went from strength-tostrength, always busy and very successful. Robert eventually moved on, returning to Norway to open its first Hard Rock Cafe. Unfortunately, the restaurant closed its doors in 2008 and has remained closed ever since. Robert said: “This is such a fine restaurant and breathing life back in to it has been a great pleasure for me and I can’t wait to share it with our customers. Everything here is about affordable quality, linen table cloths, wooden tables, excellent ingredients, mouth-watering menus, good wines, an enjoyable ambience - and an overall experience that will keep people coming back time after time.” Ole Bull is what Robert describes as a ‘proper’ restaurant and when the restaurant opened its doors last Friday there were more than 100 people booked to sample and enjoy the culinary delights cooked up by Robert and his team. The restaurant is open for lunchtime and evening dining and has an extensive al a carte menu and a set four-course Menu del Dia for just 15e. The menu includes soups, starters from the land and starters from the sea, fish courses, main course meat, fish or poultry dishes, pastas and desserts.

The cuisine is reflective of Robert’s Scandinavian heritage and European influences and the menu includes gems such as: classic Norwegian fish soup, Icelandic cod loin, Spanish lamb shank, Duck confit, home-made lasagne and a French and Spanish cheese board. Having said that, firm favourites such as: steaks, fish and chips and Hunters Chicken are also featured. To accompany the delicious food, there is a comprehensive wine list and a fully stocked bar. To showcase the dishes on offer Robert will also soon be offering a six-course Chef’s menu which will pair beautiful wines with each course for those true food and wine lovers among us. The restaurant also celebrates history in a different way, not just its connection to Robert, but through its namesake Ole Bornemann Bull. Ole Bull was a renowned Norwegian virtuoso violinist and composer aligned with the great Paganini for the speed and clarity of his playing. In tribute to the restaurants inspiration Ole Bull will have regular entertainment from a contemporary electric violinist. Robert has a wealth of international experience, and has been Head Chef and Patron Chef of some of the most renowned restaurants on the Costa Blanca. He currently owns and runs four amazing local eateries; all offering very different culinary and overall dining experiences for all occasions from a Friday night catch up with friends, to a leisurely lunch, a special celebration meal or traditional Italian fayre. Ole Bull is open 7 days a week from 12noon and the kitchen closes at 11pm. To book your table call 966 764 429.

Unilever stockpiles Magnums for no-deal Brexit

Unilever is stockpiling Magnum ice-cream in the UK to ensure supplies do not run low if there is a no-deal Brexit. Alan Jope, Unilever’s chief executive, said the company had taken the decision to import extra supplies of the ice-cream, which is produced in mainland Europe, in case the ports grind to a halt. Jope also gave the example of its deodorant brands, which are made in Leeds and include Sure, Lynx and Dove, for which extra stock is being held on the other side of the Channel. The consumer goods giant owns more than 400 brands, including Persil, Cif and Cornetto, and other products are likely to be affected by the emergency measures, depending on where they are made. Brands produced in the UK include Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream and Marmite but Magnums, for example, are made in factories in Italy and Germany. Jope said the overall cost involved in storing the additional stock, along with changing the

artwork on products to ensure they still complied with relevant regulations, was not material to the company, which has annual sales of €51bn (£44.6bn). Unilever has also been building up stocks of the materials used to make and package products in the UK, including aluminium, plastics and propellants. The company is hiring a team of customs experts as part of its Brexit planning. In his first press conference since succeeding Paul Polman as chief executive, Jope said the company was preparing for a multitude of scenarios of which a hard Brexit was the most difficult to manage. He said the impact on the company’s prices would depend on the tariff regime: “We desperately hope that we don’t end up in a tariff-laden environment.”Unilever is the latest company to reveal it is stockpiling products before the Brexit deadline. All major retailers, including Tesco and Marks & Spencer, are stockpiling packet and tinned foods, although they have warned it is not possible to

build up supplies of fresh produce. Drugmakers were told by the UK government last summer to stockpile six weeks’ worth of extra medicines, prompting AstraZeneca to boost its supplies in UK warehouses to four and a half months. Major carmakers are stock-piling parts but Jaguar Land Rover has warned that it can only amass enough parts to cope with days of disruption, rather than weeks. Other manufacturers including BMW have echoed those concerns. Jürgen Maier, the UK chief executive of Siemens, said it had increased its holdings of the “critical” components used, for example, to keep the railways and food production lines running. “We have parts that are very frequent in terms of when our customers might need them ... food manufacturing or it might be parts that are required to service and keep our railways going,” he explained. “We have looked at that profile and increased our stocks of some of those critical parts as part of our risk mitigation activities.”

Burger King trolls McDonald's After McDonald’s lost its Big Mac trademark in the EU earlier this month, competitor Burger King wasted no time taking a big, juicy bite out of the world’s biggest burger chain. Burger King’s Swedish operation recently revamped menus to poke fun at McDonald’s loss. Under the header Not Big Mac’s (sic), the sign listed meal options like “Burger Big Mac Wished It Was”, “Like a Big Mac, But Actually Big” and “Big Mac-ish But Flame-Grilled of Course”. The chain released a video showing customers tentatively ordering from among the unusual

choices, while a staff member appears unfazed as he calls out for Anything But a Big Mac. The stunt comes after McDonald’s lost the rights to its Big Mac trademark as part of its own lawsuit against a smaller burger company, the Irish chain Supermac’s. However, EU regulators found that McDonald’s had not proven genuine use of the name in the five years leading up to the case, Reuters explained. “McDonald’s just lost its trademark for the Big Mac for suing a much smaller player … it’s too much fun for us to stay away,” said Iwo Zakowski, CEO of Burger

King’s Swedish operation, in a news release. Burger King has a history of trolling McDonald’s in a sort of David and Goliath struggle, if both David and Goliath were corporate behemoths. Last month, in a complex piece of digital manoeuvring, it offered people in the vicinity of McDonald’s one-cent Whoppers, CNN reported. To promote its app, it allowed users to unlock the deal if they were standing near a McDonald’s location. They were then directed to the nearest Burger King, where they could obtain something Big Mac-ish, but flame grilled, of course.

HAH donates defibrillator Smile’s donation to AECC Torrevieja to Emerald Isle Visitors and staff at the Emerald Isle restaurant can have greater peace of mind in future thanks to the donation of a defibrillator provided by the charity Help at Home Costa Blanca. The 1,200 euro machine was handed to the Emerald Isle Complex general manager Gerald Moran by charity

president Carmen Perez at a volunteers’ meeting on 5th February. The money has been raised by Sylvia Sakir, volunteers, and groups of kind supporters, including the Red Hat ladies. The restaurant complex plays host to bowls clubs and numerous charity and social events and many hundreds of people go there every week. Help at Home Costa Blanca have a weekly market on a Tuesday morning, where it sells clothes, books, and a variety of knick knacks. Other market stalls sell jewellery and other often hand-made items. Simon Morton from Sunshine Radio plays music and sings to entertain the crowds and is often assisted by other musicians. Three members of the bowls club and five bar staff members have been trained to use the life-saving machine so that vital first hand help can be given within seconds to anyone suffering a heart problem. More than 10,000 euros has been raised to provide a total of 7 defibrillators, one in

each of the five Orihuela Costa police cars and one for the new Red Cross ambulance. The police car defibs were donated in conjunction with Costa Blanca People and Help Vega Baja who donated €2,300. Help at home Costa Blanca has in addition donated more than 30,000 euros towards an ambulance which will be operated by the Red Cross and provide vital medical support across the Vega Baja. At the volunteers’ meeting members were asked for ideas for future projects to support to provide facilities for local residents. If any reader has an idea for a worthwhile project, please contact the charity’s shops either at Cabo Roig or Playa Flamenca.

Smile Charity group met up outside sponsors Oasis Bar bistro in Benijófar with Manoli and Maria from AECC Torrevieja to present a donation of €500 towards the fight against cancer in this area. Smile has been raising money for AECC for a number of years now and members were delighted to receive a plaque from the charity. Smile also values the AECC for the recognition they have given the group as, not only do they come to the shows, they also help ‘Smile’ when needed. A Smile spokesperson also told the

Costa Blanca People, “Local radio station BIG FM ran a fundraiser in Benimar for a young girl called Millie, and as a result of this we are pleased also to announce we were able to donate €100 to the cause. Therefore from our 2018 shows we have in total been able to donate over €2000 to our charities.” Watch this space as Smile are preparing a new show for April, and welcome any new members either on stage or background; particularly, a sound engineer is needed. Seven out of every ten injuries that happen while skiing can be avoided through proper technique • Specialists recommend that you do specific exercises for toning and flexibility weeks before hitting the slopes. Study of the correct technique before skiing prevents seven out of every ten injuries," says Quirónsalud Hospital of Torrevieja’s Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Knee Unit specialist, Doctor Fernando Jordá. The majority of these injuries are related with sprains in the joints and will depend on the type of skiing we participate in, as the doctor notes that “in skiing injuries tend to focus on the knees, due to sudden turns, while in snowboarding the most common injuries are to the wrists and forearms.” Among the most common problems are injuries to the meniscus, ligament injuries, and fractures. A less frequent problem is dislocation of the knee, which is a very serious injury and requires urgent treatment. Knee injuries should be diagnosed as soon as possible after skiing and, if possible, immediately after the injury. “This is because an accumulation of liquid in the affected area in the hours after a fall, blow, or dislocation of the knee can hinder correct diagnosis by clinicians,” notes Doctor Vicente Carratalá, specialist at the Traumatology Unit at Quirónsalud Hospital of Valencia. When faced with any type of accident, Doctor Jordá recommends “performing an immediate self-examination of the areas that are painful, because a contusion may not present many symptoms at the time of the accident but limitations may begin to appear shortly thereafter. If, after the selfexamination you are ok and can move on your own, it is recommendable to go to the medical centers available on the slopes.” If the situation appears to be more serious, you must not move and the emergency rescue services on the slopes must be called so that they can be the ones who transfer you. Tips to Avoid Injuries Skiing is a sport that requires excellent physical shape and a refined technique;

therefore, it is necessary to prepare beforehand. “In general, it is advisable to start exercises a few weeks before you go to ski, trying to combine flexibility training and muscle toning – especially of the lower back muscles, abdomen, pelvic girdle, and lower limbs,” says Doctor Jordá. Another of the main factors to avoid injury is fatigue. “Most injuries occur at the end of the day when tiredness makes our attention wane and we are experiencing a greater degree of muscle fatigue,” notes Doctor Carratalá. The specialist recommends that you relax your muscles and joints in regular intervals. Lastly,Doctor Carratalá reminds us, you should always wear a helmet to avoid head injuries. Conservative Surgery on the Meniscus Injuries to the meniscus and meniscal tears are related with stain and sudden rotation while the knee joint is in a semi-flexed position, as can be experienced while skiing. “The menisci can be injured extremely easily and, interestingly, are much harder to repair. A third of all meniscal injuries are related with sporting activity in patients who are usually young,” notes Doctor Pedro Luis Ripoll, an Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Specialist at the Quirónsalud Hospital of Murcia. Not many years ago, the meniscus was considered to be an embryonic remnant without any purpose in joint function; therefore, it was often removed. "Our knowledge of the structure of the meniscus and joint function has brought us to consider the meniscus as something that is vital for the preservation of articular cartilage and, consequently, the knee's functioning. Its destruction can bring about –especially in young people– the onset of knee osteoarthritis, which we must try to prevent if the injury's characteristics allow us to do so,” explained Doctor Ripoll.

Collagen is the new health drink Collagen is the most abundant protein in skin, making up an impressive 75-80 percent of the organ. Along with elastic tissue, collagen is found in the dermis, or middle layer, of skin that gives it its fullness and plumpness. Consuming collagen is nothing new: humans have been doing it for centuries. Gelatin is the cooked form of collagen, and is obtained by boiling the skin, cartilage, and bones of animals in water. Collagen keeps our skin full and youthful-looking. Unfortunately, there's also an enzyme in skin called collagenase that breaks down bonds in collagen; although our bodies make new collagen every day, after age 25 we lose more collagen than we produce. That's when you start to see fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and weakened joints. Collagen consumption can increase skin elasticity and help your body’s skin repair process, thus encouraging your body to form new collagen. Collagen drinks and powders have been shown to have antioxidant properties, and antioxidants protect skin by limiting the production of free radicals, which can damage skin cells. As a result, these powdery drinks could help repair damaged skin, since antioxidants promise environmental protection and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as the texture of the skin. While more research is needed some early studies do point to possible benefits, such as improved skin elasticity and reduced joint pain. One small recent study linked oral collagen peptide

supplements to improved nail growth and texture; and a meta-analysis on different types of supplements taken for osteoarthritis found that collagen had medium-term pain reduction effects. And in a study from 2016, oral collagen peptide supplements increased skin hydration after eight weeks and increased collagen density in the dermis after four weeks.

ghd's new heated hairbrush has the internet in a frenzy Wish you could have some extra time in bed and still head to work/the school run looking incredible? Well, in exciting hair news, ghd has taken on Dyson and launched a new heated hair brush called glide, and it's a total game changer. The glide looks like a hairbrush but heats up in seconds. It’s fairly lightweight and glides through dry hair effortlessly. And because the brush reaches the

optimum 185C styling temperature, you'll get healthier looking hair. The ceramic anti-static ioniser restores balance back in the hair to eliminate frizz so that hair is left smooth and glossy. If your hair is long, the glide has a combination of high density shorter and longer bristles which allow large sections to be styled with ease, and detangles hair before shaping.

Did you know? Ray from Campoamor asks: Hi Aunty. What is the easy way to translate a webpage from Spanish to English? I seem to remember, once having an option of language near top of screen. I don't understand the screen options of Chrome and and Firefox. I use Windows 10. Aunty Says: Hello Ray. In Google Chrome you can easily add the little translate button that used to appear in the top right corner. Search for webstore in google and click on the Chrome Web Store link, if it comes up in Spanish then you can change the language using the cog icon top right. Type translate into the search box and choose the Google Translate extension and you should now see the small blue icon in the top right corner of Chrome. You can sometimes see a translate option of you right click on a blank area of the webpage you want to translate. John via email asks: I have an HP 1410 laser printer which has worked brilliantly with our tower but we now have a new laptop with Windows 10 but I cannot get the printer working. Previously I had no problems installing it with the CD that came with the printer but now

with the new laptop I’m unable to get it to work. I followed your advice from a previous article and simply plugged the USB cable in and let Windows automatically search and install the necessary software but

this didn’t do anything. Please help! Aunty Says: Hello John. I´ve had a quick look on the HP website and HP don’t seem to have released an updated driver for Window 10 so if there are no pre installed drivers which will automatically install when you plug the printer in then I think you may have to get a new printer. You can get a wifi enabled printer for just over €50 which is great value and as it is wireless you can also use it to print from your phone and tablets.

Paul via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have recently noticed that my downloads and email attachments that I do from the internet have started saving in a different folder. My son had created a folder on my USB external disk called “Store” especially for storing all of my downloaded pictures, films, music etc. but Chrome now seems to save things into my downloads folder on my main C: drive which is now warning me that it is full. Aunty Says: This setting is easy to change Paul and you can get to it from the settings option in Chrome. Click on the 3 small dots in the top right corner and go to “settings” and at the bottom, click on the “Show advanced options” and look for the section called “Downloads” where you can specify where you want any downloaded stuff to go That’s all for this week, any questions you can email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I’ll see you all next week.

was expensive too: prices typically started at $100 per two years of registration.

Nobody really knew what the internet was capable of back then and this was a huge opportunity for people to own all kinds of do domain names. It was in 1995 that a company called Network Solutions was granted the rights to charge people for domain names. And it

As much as 30 per cent of this was a fee that went to the National Science Foundation to create an 'Internet Intellectual Infrastructure Fund'. This fee was later reversed in 1997, bringing the charge down to $70 for two years.

When is it not 90? There has been a little confusion over some of the speed limit reductions implemented recently, and so we thought we would explain what is causing the doubt and therefore clear up the mystery. The maximum permitted speed limit on secondary roads is now 90 kilometres per hour. If signs were in place that permitted a faster speed prior to the change at the end of January, then these changes are now complete. In fact, in the Alicante province, there were no signs that needed changing. Across the Valencia region, the total that did need changing was just 37. The reason why there were no signs to change is that this new limit is on roads on which there were most likely no signs in place already. We explain that these roads are the equivalent to those in the UK that we know of where, “National Speed Limit Applies” signs would be displayed. If there are no restrictions in place, then it is up to us as the driver to know these limits, which were, prior to this change, based largely on the width and existence of a hard shoulder. Now, it is a uniform maximum. But, it is also true that this restriction has not been placed on all secondary roads. On the N-332 as it passes through Benidorm there are still sections which are signposted with a maximum permitted speed of 100 kilometres per hour. These signs are still valid, despite the fact that this road is classed as a secondary road. The reason is simple, thought not widely published. During the implementation of the change there is also a clause which allows the road operator to maintain a maximum permitted speed of up to 100 kilometres per hour on roads where there is a physical separation between the different flows of traffic, a dual carriageway in other

words. On that particular section of the N332, that is the case. The road was only recently renovated and follows all of the latest designs and requirements for a faster flowing road, including that central separation. In the case of the N-332, a nationally operated road, hence the “N” prefix, then the national road operator was free to decide if this section should be maintained as a maximum of 100, or reduced to 90 kilometres per hour. So, there are in fact still some secondary roads where the maximum permitted speed limit is 100 kilometres

Drunk in charge of a scooter? An 18-year-old man was charged with drunk driving recently, but he wasn´t driving a car, he was simply riding along on an electric scooter, so how could he be fined? The simple answer to the question is this. There are only two basic types of road users, pedestrians, and vehicle users. A pedestrian is quite simple to imagine or understand, it is a person walking. But a vehicle user is also simple to understand too. A vehicle, in its most simple form, is anything that it s propelled on wheels. With that statement we will not get into an argument about tracked vehicles, we are just being simplistic for the purpose of explaining a concept. We could easily say that a vehicle is anything that is not solely propelled by the manual movement of human extensions making contact with the road surface, or feet on the ground, but let us just keep it simple. So, with that idea in mind we can understand why the boy was charged and fined for drunk driving, because the scooter was a vehicle. Whether it is a scooter, moped, or a bicycle, trike, quad, car, truck, bus, tank (there you go, we

will include a tracked vehicle), to name but a few, if you are using them on the road, assuming they are permitted, then they are classified as being a vehicle. You are therefore subject to all the same laws as a vehicle user, including alcohol and drugs, stopping at stop signs, only riding in the correct direction on a one-way street, whatever it might be, if a rule is in place for which a vehicle must comply, then scooter users, cyclists, whoever and whatever vehicle they are moving in, must also abide by the rules of the road. On the occasion of the scooter rider being stopped and fined, he was seen to be swerving along the road, and so was presenting a danger to himself as much as others, which is what these laws are set to protect, all road users. A the moment, mandatory insurance is not required, nor is a driving licence for many of these smaller vehicles, although we are still expecting stricter usage guidelines and legislation to be implemented in the first half of this year which will see stricter use for these personal mobility vehicles, but until them, they are still classified as vehicles when used on the public road.

per hour, and these will be signposted, as it the case near Benidorm. So, we must look out for and heed those signs, as they are what dictate the maximum permitted speed of the road, subject to external influences such as the weather or traffic for example, and it is only on roads where no signs or restrictions exist that we now know are limited to a maximum of 90, remembering at all times that any speed limit is a maximum, not a target, and it does not mean that it is safe or appropriate to travel at that speed, as many other factors have to be taken into consideration.

Tales from the Top ■ CHRIS DARWEN

only the third time Chelsea had EVER let in FIVE (in the Premier League). I think even they stopped caring by six.

time in his career. Imagine being the man that was trying to sell the two Frenchmen. Really.

Worse still, Kepa had conceded from eight consecutive shots on his goal away from home. That is slightly more worrying.

The talking point at Wembley was Jamie Vardy being on Leicester City’s bench for the game against Tottenham. No matter, when Leicester were awarded a slightly dubious chance to equalise from the spot who was given the ball? That’s right, Jamie Vardy who had just come on to the pitch as sub.

chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, I need to make something very clear. Liverpool are not too nervous to win this Premier League title, OK? Bottling it is not on their mind. It is the media trying to create something that doesn’t exist. After all, two draws do not make a crisis; not even at Anfield. If you were to believe many football outlets, probably including this one, Liverpool’s squeeky bum time had started far earlier than Sir Alex Ferguson ever suggested. So much so, in fact, that Gini Wijnaldum spent most of Friday night in the bathroom being, er, nervous. It turned out that Wijnaldum was actually ill, not worried about the fact that Liverpool had seen their sevenpoint lead over Man City disappear in a puff of smoke. He wasn’t that ill though, as the Dutchman was crucial to Jurgen Klopp’s team seeing off Bournemouth 4-0. Once again, Bournemouth proved themselves to be the perfect team to play when you need to get things back on track. Eddie Howe pointed out, rightly, that Sadio Mane was offside for Liverpool’s opener and that would not have been allowed to stand next season when VAR is finally introduced. True, but what about the other three goals, Eddie? They say you need a bit of good fortune to win silverware and Liverpool have certainly benefited from a couple of dodgy decisions by assistant referees in the last seven days. Talking of dodgy decisions involving Liverpool. Have you seen Mohamed Salah’s new look? Salah has taken the brave decision to shave off his beard. Being of a somewhat superstitious persuasion myself, there is no way I’d have changed my socks let alone my face in the middle of a title race. If Liverpool do fail to win the title and Salah’s goals dry up, I think we know the reason. Incredibly though, Liverpool actually ended the weekend worse off than they started. How so? Sarriball. Or, well, the lack of it. I’ll openly admit I stepped away for the first 25 minutes of City versus Chelsea to walk one of the dogs. Did I expect to see a 4-0 scoreline when I returned? What do you think? To be fair to Chelsea, upon my return they played pretty well for a team what was already four goals down. Maybe it was the taunts from the City fans of ‘you need Mourinho’ that woke them up? Chelsea had conceded four league goals away from home in consecutive matches since 1990, which is a shocking stat in itself. It’s shocking because Sky couldn’t tell us that, could they? You know. Because football didn’t exist before the Premier League. Sky were delighted when the fifth went in as they could tell us all that this was

The half time highlights showed me that it probably should have been five, what with Sergio Aguero missing an open goal too. The half time highlights also made me laugh out loud at Marcos Alonso and how he had absolutely no interest in defending for City’s opener. As for Ross Barkley’s assist, well I guess he was brought into the Chelsea midfield to add a bit of a creative spark. We’ve been here before with Chelsea, though. It’s what they do. I would not be surprised to see Bobby Di Matteo return with John Terry as the official assistant this time and Chelsea lift the Europa League title. It won’t be Bobby though. Or Guus. Or Rafa. Mind you, Guus is coaching China’s U18 side right now so you could say he’d be tempted. It was Mike Dean I felt sorry for. He ended the day stuck on 100 red cards dished out in the Premier League. How unkind of City and Chelsea to steal his limelight. Mind you, he did his best to claw it back when awarding City’s penalty. Hold the pose, Mike. Hold the pose. Sergio Aguero now has 11 Premier League hattricks, bringing him level with Alan Shearer. He’s done it in just over half the games it took Shearer. Is there anything Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot do? If a manager wins the Manager of the Month award it normally guarantees a dip in form and the sack not too long after. Not for Solskjaer, though. Oh, no. Solskjaer continues to put Manchester United’s powers that be in a tricky situation by continuing to win football matches. If he keeps winning them how can they let him return to Molde at the end of the season? According to Rio Ferdinand, Solskjaer has given him his ‘United back’. When he turned up to replace Jose Mourinho, United were a massive 11 points off the Champions League places. And now look where they are. Look! Actually, don’t look. I’ll tell you. They are in 4th place. They are ahead of Chelsea who started the season unbeaten for as long as it took Mourinho to start self-combusting. But, have we overlooked Jose’s role in United’s revival? I mean, does he deserve some credit for leaving Solskjaer at least some decent foundations to build upon? Sure, his way of doing it was slightly unconventional but maybe Jose was working to some kind of masterplan. If he was, and even if he wasn’t, I am sure he will be on some TV station soon telling us all about it. United beat Fulham whilst protecting themselves for the visit of PSG on Tuesday night. Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial were the star men once more, Pogba moving into double figures for goals this season for the first

Vardy’s first touch in the match was to smash the ball to Hugo Lloris’ right and then watch, aghast, as the goalkeeper saved it. I’d have given Claude Puel double points had he immediately subbed Vardy back off again. Of course, Spurs went up the other end and doubled their lead two minutes later. Had Whispering Claude removed Vardy instantly he’d have denied him getting on the end of one of the best team moves in Premier League history. Had Manchester City scored Leicester’s goal at Wembley it would have been further proof that Peppy G is a genius etc etc etc and so on. But, because it was Leicester, it will be forgotten oh so quickly as we all choose to remember the day Vardy came on and missed a pen with his first touch of the ball. How many Tottenham fans were thinking, “not a short one, we never

score from short ones” as the ball was rolled back to Christian Eriksen at Wembley? The Danish international swung in a pinpoint cross which was headed home by Davinson Sanchez against Leicester showing yet again that football fans don’t know everything about football. Heung-min Son picked up a yellow card for diving in the first half. To me, it looked like a clear foul by England defender Harry Maguire but credit to Maguire for doing what every central defender known to man would also do in Sunday football; he immediately suggested he won the ball and his opponent and dived. And they say the Premier League is like a different game in this day and age. Hugo Lloris was talking prematch about how ‘Tottenham need more time’. Whether he meant to finish the new stadium or to actually win something remains unclear, but with this win over Leicester, Spurs remain in third place for now. You could say that it was very, very Arsenal to deny themselves a clean sheet for the first time away from home this season by scoring an own goal in injury time. Huddersfield had failed to score in all competitions for eight hours and 57 minutes heading into their match against Unai Emery’s men, so it was kind of expected. In fact, Huddersfield outpassed Arsenal for the match but it’s not

possession statistics that win points. Emery insisted that the ‘character was good’ for Arsenal and that the top-four is still on for them. Anyone else who actually watched the match would beg to differ. Burnley have not lost in the Premier League since they sent Jonah Hart packing to the substitute’s bench and recalled Tom Heaton to the side. They beat Brighton 3-1 to move further away from a relegation battle and were indebted to some fantastic keeping from Heaton and some incompetent officiating from the referee and his assistant. Moments after having the clearest penalty of the day turned down, Brighton found themselves giving one away at the other end and going 3-0 down. After the match, Sean Dyche said he ‘smells’ the mental strength returning in his team. Personally, I smell something else as Dyche is talking rubbish again. It’s fair to say Watford skipper Troy Deeney isn’t a closet Everton fan, eh? And that probably includes Marco Silva. But then, who is? Certainly not the Watford fans who helped local sellers of fake snakes have their best week’s takings for many a year. And certainly not the Everton fans who are somewhat bemused at how utterly rubbish their team has become under his stewardship.

Everybody rejoice! England’s Test cricketers enjoyed their best opening session of the Windies tour to date, reaching lunch on Day One of the 3rd Test only one wicket down! Yeah, it rained quite a bit in the first session. But still, progress, no? In the selection meeting game of “spin-the-bottle-to-find-thescapegoat” Ben Foakes was the unlucky party chosen to be dropped to make way for the return of Keaton Jennings. Exactly what Jennings had shown in the nets between the match he was sitting out and now is unclear, but he must have done something mightily impressive to get his name pencilled back in at the top of the order; a move which saw Joe Denly move to three (obviously, as he is the only batsman in the squad we haven’t tried there) and Jonny Bairstow back behind the stumps and batting at seven. Yes, whatever Jennings must have shown, right? He certainly cannot have shown any extra ability against pace and seam outside off stump as that was his downfall once more. You know, just like 90% of all his other dismissals in Test cricket. I saw somewhere on Twitter that Joe Denly got praise for doing better in the first innings than on his

debut. Denly scored 20. 20! If we are handing out accolades for getting 20 at number three then we really should get Nasser Hussain back in the team. Jennings, Rory Burns, Denly and Joe Root all failed once more but, rather than completely collapse and start the process of going home early, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler dug in a bit and got England to over 200 by the end of the first day. Digging in is clearly overrated though, especially when you then lose the next six wickets for 30-odd and find yourself all out for 277. The last five wickets went down in 45 minutes. Personally, I just hope it rains a lot between now and the end of the match so that (a) this report isn’t completely out of date and irrelevant by the time you read it and (b) so nobody else who will actually be useful against Australia in the Ashes ends up with a big fat question mark over his head. That said, we can’t really go into the Ashes with Jennings, Burns and Denly fighting it out over the opening slots and there really doesn’t seem to be anyone else in the frame. Why not go total maverick and bring in Jason Roy and Alex Hales? At least if Joe Root is coming in in the 20th over, those above him might have smashed some quick runs. The chat is, however, that England need some plodders up there. Two out of the top three should be

nurdlers, apparently. I don’t buy into this theory. I’d rather have bats capable of putting their foot down but intelligent enough to reign it in when needed every day of the week. The problem we have is that every opener that gets in that position ends up being a bit of both and doing neither well. Johanna Konta and Katie Boulter showed that Great Britain do have some half decent tennis players in the AAM era (after Andy Murray). They won their Fed Cup tie against Serbia meaning GB get to play in a World Playoff in April or something. I don’t know, I wasn’t paying that much attention. I was more focused on pretending I know what’s going on the Six Nations. Le Crunch ended up seeing France being the ones eaten alive. England battered them and look well on course to lift the title. Ireland beat Scotland and I ended up hearing something I thought I’d never hear in the fine, gentlemanly sport of rugger. The Scottish captain openly criticised the referee after the match. According to Greg Laidlaw, the match official didn’t seem to like the Scottish much. Wales scraped past the Italians. It was closer than the Welsh would have expected or liked. They will have to be better to beat England, I am told (by people who know more about rugby than I).

Tight Lines. TERRY SCREEN.

Last year was an excellent year for us with 50 or so assorted fun and trophy games, and culminating with our Christmas dinner held at Stan and Ollies which was attended by 54 members and their partners. Presentation of the player of the year awards were given out during the evening with Theresa Wright being the runner up and "keeping it in the family", husband Nigel taking the top spot. And although our next Player of the year trophy games do not commence until March we are continuing to play competitive games every Friday. The year started at Vistabella on the 3rd of January with Alex Bolten coming out on top with an excellent 40 points and an immediate handicap cut. Our next game was at the always good Alenda which was won by Martin Collins. The weather continued to be kind to us and our next game at Altorreal was won by Vice

revised handicap of 12 still achieved a creditable 30 pts. Our Guest category contained 2 professional golfers who didn't disappoint, both willingly shared their experience and talent with our members which is great to see. Pearse McMurrey from Vistabella playing off scratch came 3rd scoring 31 pts, 2nd was Kevin Lance handicap 7 with 33 pts but 1st was our visiting Pro from Retford GC James Freeman, who shot a gross 65 playing off plus 4 resulting in an fantastic 39 pts, and the top score of the day. Onto our own categories and Silver saw Brian Fenty 3rd with 30pts off 24, the

With a variety of winners and some excellent scores so far, this year’s trophy games are looking to be very competitive. We travel to Bonalba for our next fixture on the 15th of February, anyone wishing to play this, or any other game with us should contact at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk.

San Miguel Golf Society Forty-seven members accompanied by 5 guests turned out for the 3rd round of this year’s President’s Trophy, sponsored by Moneycorp, for which the society is very grateful. By round’s end there were a lot that wished they hadn’t bothered. Only 2 players, Norman Cahill and Order of Merit leader Russell Bailey played to their handicaps, included in a mere 7 players making 30 points or more, with 9 making 20 or less and 6 not bothering to return at all. A truly difficult day with Bronze

The Players Golf Society The Plaza Golf Society convened at our home course Villamartin in ideal conditions with 43 players. One in particular didn't take advantage of the conditions and heading off to practice was Colin Fearnley having scored a lowly 15pts.....better luck next time Colin! The 2's pot threw up multiple successes so in no particular order the 8 winners were, Russell Bailey, Chris Baker, Christian Attwood, James Freeman, Ian Bishop, Kevin Lance, Russell Bond and Brian Fenty. Best lady on the day was the very consistent Liz Sully who off her newly

Captain Dave Johnson. A fun game of Texas scramble followed at Roda with the winning team of Captain George Marshall Dean, Dave Johnson, Helen Bailey and Theresa Wright taking the honours in this one. Altorreal followed, and with a very good score of 38 points Ray Batey won this fixture.

irrepressible Tony Food 2nd with 31 pts off 17 and leading the way was Russell Bond with an excellent 36 pts off 19. Gold saw some regular podium winners with 3 players all recording 34 pts so it all went to countback. Gareth Davies 3rd off 10, Russell Bailey 2nd off 11 but pipping both of these was course specialist Paul Thelwell off 13.....well done to them. Next event is at Vistabella on Friday 22nd Feb with a full sheet at the moment but still register on our website www.theplazagolfsociety.com as a reserve and for future events during 2019.

category players suffering the most, principally due to the setting back of tee positions, so making some long carries necessary. The guests fared little better with Peter Dulson probably quite surprised that his score meant him receiving the guest runner-up prize of a sleeve of balls. Carol Wolstenholme was present from Moneycorp to present the prizes to most of the day’s winners, including a golf shirt to the day’s best scorer on countback, Russell Bailey. Russell stretches his Order of Merit lead and is well placed in the President’s Trophy after recording 2 rounds. Leading the competition, having competed in all 3 to date (best 3 of 5 to count) is Captain Tony Smale, closely followed by Vice-Captain Phil de Lacy. Winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Neil Sheldon (23

on CB), 4th Paul Kavanagh (23 on CB), 3rd Mike Kaylor (24 on CB), 2nd Ian Parkinson (24 on CB) and 1st Peter Cuniff with 25. Silver Category: 5th Russ Bond (26), 4th Per Arne Skarnes (28), 3rd Bjorn Pettersson (29 on CB), 2nd Steve Hart (29 on CB) and 1st Norman Cahill with 36. Gold Category: 5th Keven Mitchell (32), 4th Tony Smale (33 on CB), 3rd Eva Pettersson (33 on CB), 2nd John Humphreys (35) and 1st Russell Bailey with 36 points. Nearest the pins (sponsored by Moneycorp): Hole 6 Paul Kavanagh, Hole 10 Steve Higgins, Hole 12 Russell Bailey, Hole 14 Norman Cahill. Abacus (sponsored by Mike Kaylor): Chris Hamblett Best Guest Winner and Runner-up: Andreas Kummer (26) and Peter Dulson (18) respectively.

Imanyo Golf Society This was the first time we have played for the Lesley’s Myeloma Shield with the day sponsored by Geoff Ham; unfortunately Geoff couldn’t make it over from the UK this year due to commitments. We had a good turnout for the trip to our favourite course Altorreal; the weather was cold to start but as soon as the sun got to work the day it was perfect for golf warming to a pleasant 70o, the format was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups. Winner of the Myeloma Shield came from group B and it was the flying Scotsman Andy Ramage with a very good handicap cutting 44 points, runner up from group B was Tom Goulden with 36

points. Winner of group A was “The Happy Hacker “Alan Martin with 39 points, runner up was John Macmillan with 36 points. Nearest the pins were won, hole 2 Steve Ayre, holes 5 and 17 Tom Goulden, hole 8 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph, hole 10 “Happy Hacker” Alan Martin and hole 14 Andy Godfrey. The football card was won by “Minty” Phil Ward with Everton winning €40, Phil kindly donated €20 back making £60 for this year’s charities. We would like to thank Antonio and staff at Imanyo’s for the great hospitality and of course great food.

Ted Adams, presenting the shied to Andy Ramage on Geoff Ham’s behalf.
