DEVASTATING NEWS FOR CALA MOSCACAMPAIGN The Valencian regional government has approved the environmental impact study, prepared by property developer Gomendio, which paves the way for the construction of 1,500 new housing units on Cala Mosca and what local political party CLARO describes as the “destruction of Orihuela Costa’s last piece of virgin coast.” Speaking to the Costa Blanca People, a CLARO spokesperson insisted that this is not the end of the fight for Cala Mosca. The European Parliament has been a supporter of preserving CalaMosca since CLARO presented a petition with over 7,000 signatures in 2010. After the last meeting of the Parliament’s Petitions Committee in 2017 the President expressed “deep concern” about the building project proposed for Cala Mosca and stressed the importance of “an independent impact assessment” of the project. CLARO claims that officials in Valencia have not heeded this concern and have not carried out an independent environmental impact study. CLARO told the Costa Blanca People,

“We will continue the fight to save Cala Mosca. We will seek to maintain the support ofthe European Parliament. We will continue to work with the Cambiemos Orihuela political party, the only Orihuela based party to have shown an interest in the problem, to find solutions which prevent the massive urbanization of this last piece of natural coastland. There are still unanswered questions concerning the supply of domestic water, connection to the sewage system, the consequences for traffic on the already congested N332 road, as well as irregularities in the planning procedure. And of course there is the consequence, as a result of building 1,500 new housing units, of adding up to 5,000 new inhabitants to Orihuela Costa, an almost 20% increase, making the present inadequate municipal services and infrastructure much worse for the population. It is regrettable that governing Popular Party and Ciudadanos coalition has not lifted a finger to safeguard Orihuela Costa’s environment or to protect the interests of its citizens.”

BITE SIZE The Prop office NEWS: is moving Next neighbourhood watch meeting

The next meeting of the San Luis/ La Siesta neighbourhood watch meeting will be held at Casa Ventura at 4.30pm on 25th February. Attending the meeting will be the N332 team from the Guardia Civil’s Trafico branch. They will be available to discuss the recent changes to speed limits and traffic law as well as promoting the English version of the Spanish Highway Code. To lighten things a little, there will also be entertainment by the local choir Dawn Chorus. Other items on the agenda to be raised with local councillors include the proposals to repair the football courts and the treatment of processionary caterpillars. Other questions include progress on the refuse service and street light contracts. This is an important opportunity for local residents to hear first hand what is happening in the town and to have their questions answered.

Watch out for the road works A number of road works are to be carried out in Torrevieja, including laying asphalt and you might want to check if any of these will affect your travel arrangements. Work will take place on calles Diego Ramirez, Villa Madrid and part of calle Beniel next to the Social Security centre. This work is being funded by Alicante Province and will amount to €160,000. The local government Prop department was threatened with eviction following non-payment of rent for their offices near the Plaza de la Constitución. The Prop office is the town hall building where people can present papers and documents of different kinds including those required for building and opening licences. Now, in the nick of time, they’re moving out and will be established in the building they were set to occupy months ago.

The new building, also by the Plaza de la Constitución, is owned by the town hall and so there will be no need to pay rent saving as much as €65,000 a year in total. The building will also house the census or ‘padrón’ office which currently is crammed into a small building on Calle Unión Musical Torrevejense 22. On 11th February the operation to transfer the equipment, tables and chairs from the Prop building in Bazán Street began. It is not known exactly when the departments will be operational in their new location.

Alongside the physical moving of furniture there is the setting up of technical aspects of the building, such as the internet and the computer management systems. The estimated savings in rental of €65,000 is a combined total. The rent for the Prop office being €29,000 a year and the padrón office €34,000. The town centre location of the buildings making the rent particularly costly rather than the quality of the environment they provide. Although the move has now begun, the Prop workers have still passed the deadline when they were to move from their current location. The 28th January was set for the start of the eviction proceedings. However, they have been given a little additional time in which to transfer to their new setting. What the town’s people will really want to know is not how much the saving will be but whether the move will improve the quality of the service and lead to a reduction in waiting time. Both the prop office and padrón office are notorious for having very long queues and causing a great deal of frustration. However, the first indications are that the offices will continue to be paper based rather than electronic. A facility to book your appointment on line will not yet replace collecting a ticket and having a very long wait. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Hoax Henry NEWS: ransom demand ends in arrests Continued from page 3 government is being used to fund other work including in the areas of Rosa Mazón, Jacinto Noarbe and around the Habaneras shopping centre. There will also be repairs taking place in calle Minerva and Clemente Gozálvez. These works will cost €241,000 in total. It is planned to begin immediately with the intention that there is minimal disruption during Easter. Some recent road works have now been completed including those around the Plaza de Oriente which means that this area is now ready for the Semana Santa processions to take place.

Street art week From April 23rd to April 28th there will be a competition in Torrevieja to establish the best street artist. A maximum of 20 artists will be chosen to paint on specified walls and then have their creations judged by a jury and prizes awarded. The initiative is being organise by the councillor for youth, VíctorFerrández and the University of Alicante and aims to put Torrevieja on the street art map. Councillor Ferrández is now asking for businesses, individuals and tenants to offer walls to be used during the week. Anyone interested in having an old garage wall brightened up or the side of their shop painted can volunteer between February 18th and March 1st. From March 4th to 15th the locations to be painted will be published and the artists will be encouraged to choose from them. Also, during this time the artists will present their projects with the hope of winning their share of the €4,080 prize money. There will be four workshops provided by the university that aim to illustrate the four aspects of urban culture: break dance, graffiti, DJ and hip-hop.

Environmental projects The local government is reinforcing its commitment to the environment with a number of local projects. One of these is the replanting of nativeplants in the area of the dunes. The ‘Molino del Agua’ is the focus of environmental protection and some of the species being planted are to be collected from special nurseries in Valencia where they are currently being grown. A meeting took place between councillor for the environment, Fanny Serrano and representatives of Agamed, in order to finalise their collaboration over the next few months. This includes preparation for World Water Day, tidying up of the area of ditches by El Limonar and the monitoring of planting activities that took place in the natural park last year.

Architecture competition The University of Alicante, in conjunction with Torrevieja town hall, has presented ‘Project Zero’. One hundred and twenty students in the department of architecture at the university will come to Torrevieja on alternate Fridays to take part in 12 workshops in the town. These include a visit to Las Salinas, conferences and workshops involving some practical tasks. Torrevieja has been chosen as the location due to its diversity, unusual and distinct industries and a landscape that is considered to be full of possibilities. The first visit took place on February 15th and will conclude on May 17th. The workshops will be led by architects and it is hoped that the students will be able Continued on page 6

A Guardia Civil unit from Pilar de la Horadada has arrested a woman and a man for trying to defraud the mother of Henry Alejandro Jiménez Marín, the young man who disappeared on New Year's Eve from Orihuela Costa. The pair, from Torrevieja had demanded 2,000 euros in exchange for Henry’s safe return. The police were alerted by the mother after she was contacted several times by a woman who claimed Henry would be released unharmed if the money was paid. Guided by the police, the mother made two appointments to meet with the woman in Torrevieja but the woman did not show up. Meanwhile the Guardia Civil had already begun investigating the claim. From the beginning officers considered that the claim Henry was

being held against his will was a lie, a scam to take advantage of the desperate situation of the family, who still have no idea where Henry is. The police identified the phone from which the calls were made and arrested the owner, who was male and a woman who allegedly was the one who contacted Henry’s mother and made the claims. Henry disappeared on the morning of 1st January from the house where he lives in Orihuela Costa after arguing with his housemate. He was then seen on CCTV on Cabo Roig strip later that evening, and that is the last sighting of him. Friends, family and members of the local community joined in police searches but despite scouring the local area Henry remains missing.

Russian workshops and culture Councillor for culture, Domingo Pérez, presented in a press release new workshops to introduce people to the Russian language and culture. The workshops will take place during March and April and will include culture, education and cuisine. The workshops are being organised jointly by the town hall and Alicante University and take place on March 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 20th, 25th and 27th and 1st and 3rd April. The workshops are not only intended for Spanish and other nationalities finding out more about the Russian culture but also for Russian nationals to learn more about Spain. Torrevieja is a very cosmopolitan town with more than 150 different nationalities. The Russian community is one of the largest now in the area. There will be four sessions of two hours in the Russian language. These will include the Russian

alphabet, pronunciation rules, conjugation of verbs and common phrases. Films will also be shown with subtitles in Spanish and the workshops will close with a day dedicated to Russian cuisine. This will take place in the CdT building and will include sharing and teaching about Russia’s most famous recipes. These workshops are completely free and you can sign up on the web page http://torreviejaua.eventbrite.es/. Initially it is expected that 20 places will be available. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Change of mind over court NEWS: Continued from page 5 to bring their own suggestions and influence to the streets and buildings of the town.

Streets closed for carnival As the time approaches for the carnival processions the local police are warning about some disruption to traffic. On 24th February, when the daytime carnival will take place, the roads that will be closed from 5pm include calle Ramón Galludfrom the Plaza María Asunción as far as Clemente Gosálvez. On these streets parking will be prohibited up to 48 hours before the procession. Additional security will be in place 16 hours before the procession begins. Roads will also be closed on 1st March for the children’s carnival procession. This will take place from 5pm on calle Ramón Gallud, from the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre until the Plaza de la Constitución. Again, vehicles will be prohibited from parking on these streets for the 48 hours before the procession takes place. The final closure is on Saturday 2nd March from 7.30pm for the evening carnival and the same roads will be closed as on 24th February. No parking will be allowed prior to the event and additional security will be in place from 6.30pm onwards. If you do park in these allocated areas you can expect to have your vehicle towed away. The processions take hours to pass by so anyone using these roads should plan alternative routes. Suzanne O’Connell

evidence location The plans for the court evidence to be stored in the Semana Santa Museum could be on hold. An advert has gone out published by the Ministry of Justice to rent a space to relocate the materials. These items, used as evidence in court cases, are currently taking up space in the court building itself. A ground floor space of no less than 300 square metres and near the court on calle Patricio Zammit Street has been requested. A window of twenty days has been advertised to receive offers of accommodation to rent. The announcement has come as a surprise as it was only recently published that the boxes of evidence would sit side by side with the religious artefacts. These must be stored all year round in readiness for the Holy Week processions to take place. The idea was that the items of evidence could be moved from the justice building in order to allow additional court facilities to be built and free up space in the court itself. The relocation of the evidence was always going to be controversial

given that it includes a wide range of items retrieved from crime scenes over the years. An undeveloped area in the court building itself has acted as storage since 2009 and the situation needs addressing. The court building was never completely finished but work could now take place to refurbish this additional area and apply it to court business, except for the fact that it’s full of court materials. There is some confusion as to why the new Semana Santa Museum building, isn’t yet ready for occupation. Only recently it was published that there were problems with the electricity supply and that this was holding up transfer. The move couldn’t happen without an electricity supply partly because a security system needs to be in place. The new museum cost six million euros and is five stories high with three basements. It represents a significant reorganisation of council departments as well as holy thrones and images. A move that, understandably, is causing a few councillors some headaches. Suzanne O’Connell

Police overtime must be paid The courts have ruled that the additional time that some police officers worked in Torrevieja during the Tour of Spain cycle race must be honoured and paid for. The ruling was made on 11th February in connection with the 9thstage of the Vuelta Ciclista a España in 2015. It was the town hall itself that initially ordered payment of the additional salary for the police officers who covered on that day. It was agreed to pay €170 each to the 40 local policemen and women who took part. However, the payment was apparently blocked by the Chief of Police. In May 2018 the court agreed

with the town council and at the same time, six police officers took the town to court for non-payment of wages. However, as far as the town council is concerned, the payment of this overtime was never in question. ‘The omission has been due to the stubbornness of a local police chief and not down to me or the members of the council,’ said the mayor. ‘From the beginning we have done everything we could to ensure that this money was paid. They did the job with the utmost professionalism and deserved to be rewarded for it.’ Following the court’s

agreement, the mayor has now issued the order that the €170 be paid and in addition to this that the officers receive interest for late payment and the cost of the court proceedings which is estimated to be about €300. ‘With this final act we can lay to rest the events that have proceeded it,’ said the mayor, ‘including the non-collaboration of some officials.’ The mayor apologised ‘heartily’ for the delay in the payment and the fact that the police officers have had to go through such a prolonged process to receive what they had earned. Successful quiz nights for Huntington’s More than 70 people attended a fun quiz in aid of Huntington's Disease sufferers held recently at The Pines Restaurant in Benijofar. The event was the largest fundraising evening so far and raised an incredible 510 euros, which will go towards helping sufferers and their families on the Costa Blanca. Quizzers were treated to a delicious supper expertly cooked by Steve, Head Chef at The Pines and his staff, followed by rounds of general knowledge questions and a unique music round, compiled and presented by Christine and Martin Watkins. It was a close fought contest but congratulations go to the eventual joint winners ‘The Magnificent 7’ and ‘The 4 Candles’ teams. By coincidence, the previous night, The Pines hosted a quiz known as The Fincas Fun Quiz and each month a different charity is chosen to benefit from the proceeds. It was decided that January's and December's (which was carried over) should also go

to Huntington's Disease Association. And so a total of 388 euros was gratefully received by Marion Smith, the President of the Association. Thanks go to everyone involved in both these events and to helping this worthwhile local charity. The next fundraising event for Huntington’s Disease will be a Charity Lunch at Restaurante Giovanni, in Almoradi, which is already sold out. However, this will be closely followed by A Murder Mystery Evening on 23rd March in Quesada fro which tickets are available. For more information on this event, please contact: stuwart.181@btinternet.com. The group is currently looking for a Vice president to join its friendly team, so if you would like to learn more about Huntington's Disease, or would like to help the organisation, please contact Marion Smith by email: marion.smith@hda.org.es or telephone 634905249. Age Concern welcomes San Miguel Golf Society Golf Captain, Tony Smale from the San Miguel Golf Society recently visited Age Concern’s Day Centre in La Siesta. He presented the charity’s President, Maureen Payne, with a cash donation of €200. Tony was accompanied by his wife Wendy and together they enjoyed a cup of tea and chatting with some of the regular visitors to the centre in calle Paganini. The Day Centre is a popular venue for many people who live alone and enjoy the opportunity to chat and make friends in a welcoming environment. The San Miguel Golf Society is one of the longest running and most established golf clubs in the area. It has 160 members who are regularly involved in raising funds including by dropping money into their ‘Blob tin’. When the tin is full the members decide which charity should receive the donation. On this occasion the choice was Age Concern. The donation will now go towards the upkeep of the vehicles run by the charity and the services provided by Age Concern to the over 50s in the Costa Blanca. If you would like to find out more about what is available you can call 966 786 887 or come into their centre at calle Paganini La Siesta from Monday to Friday between 10am and 1.30pm. Historic ‘Tintero’ could be demolished The ‘Tintero’ restaurant juts out into the sea from the paseo maritime. It is a popular landmark and an unusual construction. Now, it’s under threat from the coastal department which legislates to ensure the protection of front line beaches and the coast. The town hall in Torrevieja are not so keen to see it demolished. They are contesting the request by seeking protection for the building as being one of local importance. The town hall began a process in 2017 of

including the building in its inventory of those properties worthy of a special mention. Its place in the list of Locally Relevant Property, hopefully protecting it from closure. The Tintero is over 80 years old and recently received the order from the Department of the Coast to stop trading. It first opened in 1940 as a place where

fishing nets were treated. It separates the Cura beach from the paseomaritimode Las Rocas and is a popular haunt for those wanting to sample seafood whilst feeling they are at sea themselves. It’s recognised by the town hall as being of historical value as well as being a local landmark that is enjoyed by tourists. Torrevieja is not over burdened with unusual buildings and this, with its key place on Torrevieja’s sea front, would be missed.

The order to close from the department of the coast is linked to the clamp down on restaurants whose outside area spreads onto the beaches. However, there is popular support for keeping it running and it is still hoped that the town can prove its heritage value and save it from being demolished. Suzanne O’Connell

Investigation against illegal registration shelved The allegation that three high-ranking town hall officials were involved in illegal immigration in 2017 has been shelved by the courts. The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, explained that the town hall employees had been accused of registering some people fraudulently in 2017 through falsifying rental contracts as part of the municipal census. At the time, the National Police were involved in investigating the allegations which included estate agents as well as town hall employees and as a result 130 arrests took place. It was alleged that false rental contracts were issued to foreigners so that they could register in Torrevieja. However, later investigations have indicated that a crime has not been committed and that the employees had acted correctly. Since 2011 the number of people registered in Torrevieja on the padrón has fallen from 102,000 to 82,000. This

has been explained by the fact that there have been attempts to ensure that those registered are still living here. From 2014 to 2016, there was a drop of 18,000 people registered. This, explains the mayor, is largely the result of a campaign during these years to remove those from the register who shouldn’t be there. There have been times where being on the padrón did not necessarily mean that you were a resident. People were encouraged to register to swell the town’s population and receive extra money from the national government. A practice that was evident in many Spanish towns. During 2014 and 2016 the residential status of those registered on the padrón was checked to ensure that these people were still living in the town and correctly categorised. Suzanne O’Connell

Police attacked in suspected case of domestic violence The emergency call to the police was made by a neighbour at around 7.30am on Friday 15th February. Following the alert the investigating local police officer and member of the Guardia Civil found themselves victims of an attack by a 25 year old Spanish man. Having heard shouts coming from the apartment since 5am the concerned neighbour contacted the police to report a suspected case of domestic violence. On turning up at the property in calle Argonautas, the door was answered by a young woman who was sobbing but claimed that there was no problem, only that she was stressed and nervous. The police officer could see that inside the flat there was a young man in his underpants with blood on his fists. They asked him to leave but he refused, swearing at them profusely and then slamming the door. A Guardia Civil officer joined the local police officer in demanding that the couple open the door. Again the young woman insisted that there was nothing wrong and that nothing was happening. The young man then

slammed the door again with such force that one of the police officers, who was attempting to keep the door open, was injured. The young man then punched the same police officer, injuring his cheekbone and teeth and causing a whiplash injury.

treated for their injuries at the Quirón Salud Hospital in Torrevieja. Further investigations are taking place to determine whether the woman had also been verbally or physically assaulted before they arrived and if the man had behaved in this

The officers were treated at Quirón Salud Hospital in Torrevieja

The Guardia Civil officer was also punched and suffered a broken nose. Throughout the attack the young man continued to swear and insult the officers who did eventually manage to detain him following a great deal of resistance. The man now faces two possible charges of assault against the officers and that of domestic violence. The two police officers were

way on previous occasions too. Following this assault, the police unions have reaffirmed their concerns about insufficient numbers of police being available to deal with incidents such as this. They are also concerned that the police do not have enough equipment to protect themselves in cases where they are threatened with violence. Suzanne O’Connell

Campaign against illegal goods applauded La Asociación para la Defensa de la Marca (ANDEMA), society for the defence of brands, has thanked the town hall in Torrevieja for its concerted efforts in dealing with illegal goods and fakes on the streets. ANDEMA campaign for brands and genuine goods and has been pleased with the actions taken by the town’s local police during the last summer season. The police have been increasingly vigilant in the area of the paseos in the centre of town where illegal streets traders often try to sell their fake and counterfeit items. This represents a challenge to local trade and unfair competition at a time when town

centre traders are facing an uphill struggle. ANDEMA is the main Spanish association that acts as a spokesperson for companies and in defence of trademark rights. They point out that it is not only the actual sale of these goods that causes concern. The hawking of fake goods is often linked to other criminal activity including money laundering and trafficking of goods and people. ANDEMA believe that the actions taken during the summer season of 2018 will help to avert the practices on the street and other crimes too. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE The pound had another difficult week. GDP expanded by just 0.2% in the fourth quarter, just a third of what it achieved in Q3. The trade deficit widened in December and business investment fell 1.4% in the quarter and was down by 3.7% for the year as a whole. Parliament's Treasury Committee published its "unanimously-agreed" report on Budget 2018 and noted their concern over the veracity of chancellor's promise of a Brexit "deal dividend". Bank of England Governor Mark Carney also reiterated the possibly disastrous consequences for the UK economy if the UK leaves the EU without a deal. Despite challenging numbers, the pound held relatively steady, but once again political debate over Brexit weighed heavy on the pound, which dropped in anticipation of Theresa May’s address to parliament and fluctuated more as it became clear that there was no new detail. The PM repeatedly urged MPs to vote for a deal as the only way to avoid a no-deal scenario and there are concerns that May is running down the clock to force parliament to accept the deal. Later in the week, inflation figures were released; headline CPI inflation in Britain was 1.9% in the year to January, down from 2.1% a month earlier. The pound spiked briefly but soon fell victim to more Brexit acrimony after the government was once again defeated in a motion to approve their current negotiation strategy. The pro-Brexit European Research Group

(ERG) of Conservative MPs abstained over fears that, despite the PM consistently rejecting calls to rule out a no-deal scenario, the motion would have amounted to an endorsement of efforts to rule out a no-deal Brexit. This latest defeat added another layer of uncertainty and puts the UK in a very difficult negotiating position. Tension and acrimony were the order of the day in Europe, too. Italy's deputy prime minister gave his tacit support to the gilets jaunes anti-Macron movement. President Macron recalled his ambassador from Rome. A general strike in Belgium over workers’ rights also caused concern. In economic terms Belgium is a relative minnow, generating 2.8% of the EU's gross domestic product, but this eruption of populism cannot improve attitudes towards the euro. This backdrop contributes to the growing expectation is that there will be a change in policy from the European Central Bank and an adjustment to forward guidance as soon as next month. The reason can be seen in the numbers as much as the rise in populism. Industrial production across Europe showed monthly and annual declines of 0.9% and 4.2%, both of them much bigger than forecast. Germany's GDP was flat in Q4, narrowly avoiding recession, contributing to the euro’s troubles. While these issues rumble on, the euro appears to have lost its status as a safe haven currency and lost out against the yen and the swiss franc.

Following budget defeat, Spanish PM will announce election date Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez (below) is to announce a date for a new general election, said sources in the executive. It is believed that the announcement will take place after the Cabinet meeting. Government sources have suggested 28th April as the date, although this will not be confirmed before the official announcement. The decision to call a national election comes after Congress rejected the Socialist Party (PSOE) government’s spending plan for 2019. The next general election was due to be held in 2020. During two days of debate in Spain’s lower house, the government made a last-bid attempt to convince other parties to back the plan, but the opposition of pro-Catalan independence groups – as well as that of the conservative Popular Party (PP) and centre-right Ciudadanos (Citizens) – was the nail in the coffin of the government’s proposals. Sánchez came to power in June 2018 after filing a successful motion of no confidence against former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, of the conservative Popular Party (PP). However, since then he has been in a weak position in Congress, with just 84 seats in the 350-seat house, with 176 votes needed for a majority. As such, he needs the support of parties such as left-wing Podemos, the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and the Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT) to pass legislation, including his 2019 budget plan.

But the ERC and PDeCAT had been threatening for over a week to withhold their support for the 2019 budget, if the government did not make more concessions over the issue of Catalan independence and the trial of the proindependence leaders involved in the 2017 illegal referendum in the region and subsequent declaration of independence. The court case began in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. In the end they made good on their threats, with their deputies in Congress rejecting the budget in conjunction with Asturias Forum, Canarian Coalition, the PP and Ciudadanos. This is despite the fact that the latter two parties have been long calling for the renewed suspension of Catalonia’s regional powers under Article 155 of the Constitution, which was used by the PP in the wake of the 2017 unilateral declaration of independence in the Catalan parliament. In the second session of the debate this morning, deputies from left-wing Unidos Podemos and En Comù Podem, as well as the spokesperson from the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), joined the calls from the PSOE for the proindependence parties to back the budget. But their efforts were in vain. The budget has been rejected and sent back to the government, and the clock is now ticking for a general election. The majority that saw the motion of no confidence against Rajoy prosper has now been shattered.

Do you know how your pension is invested? How to understand your retirement savings and pull them together to work harder • Consolidating your old pensions into one easyto manage pension can cut costs • A Sipp is a good option for those looking to broaden their investment choices

D

o you have an old workplace pension but haven't a clue about how your money is invested or have old pensions that you've lost track of? If so, you're not alone. The responsibility to save for retirement is increasingly falling to individuals, but many people struggle to connect with how their workplace pension is performing, or what happened to old pots. Most people worked for a number of different employers over the course of their careers and, as a result, end up with several different pension pots. However, left in an old employer's pension scheme, your money is at risk from high charges and poor performance. An obvious remedy to this is to consolidate your old pensions into one easy‐to‐manage pension. Many people therefore choose to open a self‐invested personal pension ‐ a Sipp ‐ that offers them a much wider choice of funds and other investment options. Put simply, Sipps are a type of do‐it‐yourself private pension that allow savers to cherry pick from thousands of investments to create a portfolio tailored to their individual appetite for risk and investment objectives. This can include funds, investment trusts and shares. Bear in mind that you'll be responsible for making your own investment decisions and managing your portfolio which is by no means an easy feat. If you’re not comfortable tackling big decisions on your own, then this is where Seagate can help you.

Spain is one of the top countries to retire to International Living magazine’s 2019 ‘Best Places to Retire’ Index has compiled data based upon the experiences of expats on all five continents with everything from the weather and food through to living costs, healthcare and level of bureaucracy, and has come to the conclusion that Spain is the second-best country in Europe to move to when you give up work, after Portugal. And if you can’t decide between the two, you could always move to the provinces of Zamora or Salamanca (Castilla y León), the region of Extremadura or, if you prefer to be near a coast, the province of Huelva (Andalucía) or Pontevedra (Galicia), where you’ll be in Spain but right on the Portuguese border, so you can hop between countries. That said, Spain is top choice if you want to avoid Atlantic winds, since more than half its coast is on the Mediterranean, which escapes the worst of the weather during travelling cold fronts due to its being enclosed. International Living is a USbased magazine, so the winning countries in this year’s Index tend to be non-European as distance from home is a factor: Panamá comes out top, followed by Costa

Rica, México and Ecuador, which may well be too far from the family for northern Europeans seeking a sunny retirement hotspot. Malaysia, Colombia, Portugal, Perú and Thailand also come before Spain, but if it’s Europe you’re looking to move to, the Iberian peninsula countries are the best choices on the International Living list. One of the reasons Spain comes second in Europe come as no surprise to most of our readers – such as the fact it is one of the continent’s top beach destinations for holidaymakers – and points out that in many coastal parts, especially on the tourist trail, communities of English-speaking expatriates can be found, meaning those who have not yet started learning Spanish will still be able to make

friends before they are confident enough with the language to mix with locals. Outside of the mainstream holiday areas, the Index report warns that newcomers will need to learn Spanish before they make the move in order to cope. Perhaps unexpectedly, the established expat destinations are not the ones International Living most focuses on – its authors rave about the northern part of the country, where the landscape is very different, winters are colder, although efficient heating systems in homes are more commonly found, and summers are milder, although still very warm. “Navarra, Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia and the Basque Country offer forests, mountains, friendly people and food to die for,” the report says.

Visit to VILNIUS with Vivalia Travel Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers and has 527,930 inhabitants. Along with Linz, Austria, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture in 2009.

Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers and has 527,930 inhabitants. Along with Linz, Austria, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture in 2009. The word Vilnius is a masculine form of a Vilnia river's name (which is feminine) and refers to the river surge. As a capital Vilnius has always been a multinational city populated by Lithuanians, Germans, Slavs and Jews from time immemorial. It may be useful to know that the original city location is lost due to erosion, the present days Old Town appeared in the Middle Ages when the inhabitants were forced to settle there from the heights of a Vilnia river bank which became impossible to live. THINGS TO SEE AND DO Old Town. It is a city area which began to develop extensively since the Middle Ages and eventually has been surrounded by a defensive wall. The wall determined a firm area and its shape for a long period of time, this area now is called Old Town and has a separate status in Vilnius administrative division. You can visit in this area important places such as Royal Palace, Vilnius Cathedral, Crooked Castle, Presidential Palace or the Town hall. Also, throughout the year, there are a variety of cultural, music, cinema, theatre, art, and fashion festivals taking place. Cinema Springtime: Annually from the middle of March to beginning of April. International Film Festival (Vilnius IFF) “Kino pavasaris” is the largest cinematic event in the country, known and loved for its high quality independent film programme and rich accompanying package of cinema-related events,

workshops, and special initiatives. Vilnius Festival: Annually from the end of May to the beginning of July. International festival of classical music, one of the most prestigious, solid and versatile events in Lithuania. On the other hand, Vilnius is famous for its amber, wool socks and hats and flaxware. EAT AND DRINK An important place in Lithuanian cuisine is occupied by small dumplings (called koldūnai or virtiniai) made from dough and with a filling of meat, mushrooms, berries or cottage cheese. An interesting variety of koldūnai is “tinginiai” (“lazy bones”) – half-moon shaped dumplings with a filling of freshly crushed blueberries. In most Lithuanian restaurants you can order kibinai and čeburėkai, which are imports from Karaim cuisine. Also popular are various types of pancakes made from flour (instead of grated raw potato), some with fillings of fruit or berries, others ‘plain’, made from yeast-raised dough, and served dipped in sour cream or berry jam. For a snack you can try marinated or salted herring with boiled potatoes, various kinds of cottage cheese or fermented cheeses, and hotsmoked or cold-smoked hams and sausages. Lithuanians also know many recipes for mushroom dishes. Mushrooms are used in sauces, as fillings, or served as an accompaniment to meat dishes. You can find different cuisines as Ukrainian or Thai restaurants. Lithuanian vodka (Lithuanian degtinė) is of excellent quality. The brand 'Lithuanian Vodka' is quite popular. The gold is the premium version. Cranberry is also nice.

Only one in four asylum requests are being accepted in Spain S

pain received a record-breaking 54,000 requests for asylum in 2018, making it one of the five countries in Europe with the highest number of applications. But it accepted a far lower rate of requests than other European countries facing the same demands. In 2018, just 12,000 requests were resolved in Spain, and just one in four asylum seekers was granted protection. The acceptance rate has fallen from 35 percent to 24 percent – the lowest rate of the seven European countries that have the highest number of requests for asylum (Germany, Greece, Sweden, Italy, France and Spain), according to the Spanish Refugee Support Commission (CEAR). Germany tops the list, granting protection to 50 percent of 185,853 applications last year. “These numbers give us a negative image of our willingness to accept refugees,” said CEAR managing director, Estrella Galán. The figures from 2018 also reveal the backlog at the Asylum Office, which reports to the Interior Ministry. Asylum requests are dealt with slowly. There are currently 78,710 applications yet to be processed, and each can take up to two years to be resolved. In December, the Spanish

Socialist Party (PSOE) government announced an action plan with more staff and resources in an effort to speed up the process and resolve three times the number of requests this year. The Asylum Office has been staffed by just 60 people since it was founded in 1992, when Spain received hardly any asylum applications. Of the 11,875 applications that were approved, only 575 – less than 5 percent – were granted refugee status, which provides the greatest level of protection and is indefinite. The rest were offered subsidiary protection, a temporary measure that is granted largely to people from Syria, Ukraine and Palestine. “We continue to see that our generosity and application of international protection are very limited. What’s more, asylum is not allowing thousands of people to slip in, as the alarmists claim,” said Galán. More than a third of asylum applications to Spain have come from Venezuelans, who have been struggling with a deepening humanitarian and political crisis since 2016. But while there is high demand, only 30 Venezuelans were granted recognition. After Venezuelans, the highest number of requests came from Colombians (8,650), Syrians

CONSUELO RUMÍ, SPAIN’S SECRETARY OF STATE OF MIGRATION (2,775) and Hondurans (2,410). For the second year in a row, applications from Moroccans received one of the highest approval rates. Most of these asylum seekers had been granted protection for their sexual orientation or gender identity, but others were victims of the Moroccan government’s repression of the Rif protest movement, which advocates for the rights of the Berberspeaking Rif region of northern Morocco. While Spain rejected 595

asylum requests, 55 others were recognized. This statistic undermines a statement by Consuelo Rumí, Spain’s secretary of state of migration, who claimed people from Morocco were not “granted asylum or refuge.”

Obstacles

According to the head of CEAR’s legal department, Paloma Favieres, “2018 has been the year that has placed the most obstacles in the way of people trying to request asylum.” The lawyer

explains that dozens of people have had trouble arranging the meeting that begins the administrative process to request asylum. In Madrid, entire families are forced to sleep on the street outside the immigration office due to limits on daily applications, says Favieres. There are other, lessvisible obstacles, she adds, pointing out that potential refugees have trouble getting to Spain because they are not given transit visas. Favieres says one of the “challenges” is encouraging asylum applications in embassies and consulates, where just 370 requests were processed last year by relatives who had already been given protection.

Tens of thousands protest Most romantic regions against Spanish PM in Spain The leaders of three of Spain’s right-wing parties managed to bring out tens of thousands of people to Madrid’s central Colón square, to protest against Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and demand that the Socialist Party (PSOE) politician call elections as soon as possible. The conservative Popular Party (PP), centre-right group Ciudadanos (Citizens) and farright newcomer Vox attracted flag-waving crowds of 45,000 people, according to the central government delegate in the Spanish capital, although the organisers put the figure as high as 200,000. The manifesto that had been agreed between the three

of the more controversial policies of Vox, which recently won a surprise victory in the Andalusian regional elections. The call for the demonstrations was prompted last week by a political storm in Spain over the government’s decision to accept having an observer at the planned crossparty talks on Catalonia. It was unclear what this figure – who had been described as a cross between a rapporteur, a mediator and a notary – would have been tasked with doing at the talks, but the opposition said it was a concession to the Catalan separatists, who have repeatedly asked for international mediation.

groups accused the prime minister of having “betrayed” Spain by accepting 21 demands of pro-independence groups in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia. That is despite the fact that the central government last week broke off negotiations with the pro-secessionist groups due to their demands ahead of planned cross-party talks to address the issue of the ongoing independence drive. The march came before the beginning of a controversial and highly anticipated trial against the Catalan secessionist leaders who spearheaded the failed independence bid of 2017. The trial opened at Spain’s Supreme Court, which has called around 500 witnesses to the stand. The hearings are expected to stretch around three months, and leading witnesses will include former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, and Catalan parliament speaker Roger Torrent. And that is not the only key date this week. On Wednesday, Spain’s Congress will hold a key vote on the 2019 budget blueprint, and failure to secure enough support could bring down Sánchez’s government and lead to early elections. The protest in Madrid gave rise to a previously unseen image: the PP leader, Pablo Casado, the Ciudadanos chief, Albert Rivera, and the head of Vox, Santiago Abascal, posing together for a photo. That was an image that, until the weekend, Rivera had been trying to avoid, given some

Recently, the PP, Ciudadanos and Vox announced their plans for a street demonstration in Madrid to protest the move and “throw out” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who came to power in late May after leading a successful no-confidence vote against Mariano Rajoy of the PP. The demonstration went ahead despite Spain’s deputy prime minister, Carmen Calvo, announcing that talks with Catalan separatist parties were off, and that there will be no more proposals from Madrid. “This government made a firm decision to build as many bridges as possible, but right now the framework we have created is not being accepted by the pro-independence parties,” said Calvo following the weekly Cabinet meeting. Demonstrators marched under the slogan “For a United Spain. Elections Now!” Protesters criticized the fact that Sánchez has refused to call elections in the eight months he has been in power. “We need to kick out the squatter in La Moncloa,” said Vox leader Abascal, alluding to the seat of government in Madrid. Given that Sánchez came to power via a no-confidence motion, and that the PSOE commands just 84 seats in Congress, where 176 votes are needed for a majority in the 350seat house, “squatter” is a term regularly used against him by the opposition. Vox, a party that currently has no representatives in Congress, managed on Sunday to literally position itself on a level with the

PP, a party that has governed Spain for nearly 15 years, and with another, Ciudadanos, that counts on 32 seats in Congress. For Casado, there were calls from many of the attendees at Sunday’s protest to file his own motion of no confidence against Sánchez. But the PP does not currently count on the support in Congress for such a move, and what was clear from yesterday’s demonstration is that the conservative party now has to share a stage with Vox and Ciudadanos if it wants to oust Sánchez from power. The PP needed the support of both these parties in order to form a government in Andalusia after the December regional elections, which saw the PSOE win most votes but fall short of the majority. Andalusian voters gave 12 seats to Vox on the strength of it anti-immigration rhetoric, and the PP was forced to accept some of its demands on education and family issues. With local and regional elections coming up in late May, Vox could make new inroads in councils and assemblies across Spain. The PP and Ciudadanos agreed that there would be no political speeches made by the party leaders on Sunday, in a bid to keep Vox out of the spotlight. Instead, a trio of journalists read out the manifesto that had been agreed on by the three parties. The text was resonant of the tough rhetoric that has been employed recently by Casado and Abascal, and was in contrast to the discourse of Ciudadanos.

Public address

The three leaders did address the crowds ahead of the protest, however, with the Ciudadanos chief speaking about a “wave of dignity.” The manifesto denounced the alleged “suicidal drift” of Sánchez, accusing him of having “betrayed” Spain with a “stab in the back” by having “accepted the 21 demands of the pro-secessionists,” in allusion to a list of requests put together by regional chief Quim Torra ahead of planned cross-party talks. But the central government has not recognized, among other points on that list, “the right to selfdetermination in Catalonia,” nor has it allowed for an “international mediator.” And, of course, it broke off negotiations on Friday with the proindependence parties. The PP also utilized the same language as Vox, speaking about a “reconquista,” or reconquest. “Sánchez’s time is over,” Casado said on arrival in Colón. “There is no more room for Socialist surrender nor more proindependence blackmail. Today sees the start of the reconquest.” Abascal, who was received to cries of “Prime minister, prime minister!”, stated that the “coup d’etat” in Catalonia should be “suffocated to the very end.”

Spaniards in Cantabria were having the most sex this Valentine’s Day, according to new research. A study of 7,000 people by start-up Geeksme has revealed that Cantabrians had more sex than anyone else in Spain in 2018. The mountainous northern autonomous community had an average of 122.72 sexual encounters last year, according to the report. The Balearic Islands and Murcia complete the trio of horny regions, after seeing 106.08 and 101.92 sexual relations on average, respectively. Andalucia meanwhile came a lowly 12th in the sex rankings, while those keeping it in their pants the most on 14th February were the La Riojans with an average of 58.24. Other data gleaned from the research includes the average length of sex for Spaniards, which stands at just 32 minutes, including foreplay. Spain’s favourite day to get between the sheets is a Tuesday, when 15.04 percent of all sex happens, the findings reveal.

THE FULL LIST OF RANDY RANKINGS IS BELOW: • Cantabria (122.72) • Balearic Islands (106.08) • Murcia (101.92) • Catalunya (97.14) • Galicia (95.68) • Navarre (91.52) • Castile and Leon (88.19) • Madrid (87.36) • Extremadura (87.36) • Asturias (85.28) • Aragon (83.82) • Andalucia (81.54) • Valencia (81.12) • Basque Country (78.21) • Canary Islands (72.8) • Castilla la Mancha (62.82) • La Rioja (58.24)

The three Spanish B’s in Real Estate

n Spain, there’s a common phrase that you may have heard of… The 3 B’s! Bueno, Bonito y Barato! (Translation: Good, Pretty & Cheap!) When looking for your dream home, I’m sure you’d like to think you’d find the perfect property with the three B’s! You’re not on your own, we all would! But remember, perfection and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You may just have to compromise, to get what you ultimately really want. Is it Bueno? Ask yourself, “Does my future home have to be ready to move into?” If you are D.I.Y’ers and can handle a “fixer upper,” then be open minded to something that may need a little T.L.C. You may be able to negotiate on the asking price if repairs are needed to be made. Is it Bonito? Ask yourself,“Is the overall exterior look of the home important to me?”

Just because the outside may not have curb appeal, doesn’t mean to say that inside isn’t a hidden gem! Take the time and look inside, it may be exactly the floor plan your family needs. Be open minded. Is it Barato? Ask yourself, “Can my budget stretch for the perfect home?” So you’ve found the ideal home. It’s perfect for you and your family. Everything about it screams “mi casa es su casa.” But there’s one minor detail not in your favour. The price! Look at the bigger picture. If this ideal home is stretching your budget to the max, but it is ready to go, no repairs necessary, then just because it’s not as barato as you’d have hoped for, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bite the bullet and go for it! Stretching to your limit might mean you’re getting the home that is absolutely perfecto for you! Buying a property? We have a beautiful selection of quality homes. You

You is Notting Hill directed by David Fincher. A nice guy bookstore manager (Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley) meets a smart, beautiful girl (Elizabeth Lail) in his store, yet rather than lead her to Rhys Ifans in his underpants, decides to stalk her online, inveigle his way into her life and knock off anyone

that might threaten their togetherness. Adapted from Caroline Kepnes’ 2014 book by Greg Berlanti (Riverdale, Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural), it mixes psychological thrills and black comedy to mostly entertaining ends. The meet cute happens in one of those TV bookstores marked by shafts of light catching moats of dust. Joe Goldberg (Badgley) watches wannabe poet Guinevere Beck (Lail) — who goes by Beck — and the pair bond over people who have to buy a J.D. Salinger book alongside a Dan Brown novel ("like when guys buy cereal and condoms" she offers). Once he has her name from her credit card, Joe begins a deep dive into her social media (it pops up like Fight Club Ikea prices), uses Google Maps to find her house, then tracks the contours of her life — her lecherous lit professor, her socialite friends, a bad on-off boyfriend — until he finds the right moment to step in and make her the pancakes he thinks she is craving. One of the pivots You turns on is the notion we are all the heroes in our

own stories. So while Joe can call in a fake gas leak to gain access to her apartment or get handy with a mallet, in his own head he is the nice guy, saving the dream girl from herself.

Played by Badgley like young Tom Hanks channelling Dexter, Joe is the kind of guy who thinks he is more authentic because he is not on Facebook. While a sub-plot about him helping a neighbourhood kid with a bad homelife adds dimensions, in reality he is just a blank page with a

literary fetish. As an object of Joe’s affection, Beck starts as an idealised goddess but it becomes part of the show’s arc to reveal (to Joe as well as us) that she is a mess, Lail’s performance slowly revealing her true colours. She embodies the show’s main theme: the way we curate own

lives to mask truths behind fictions. As such, it’s a show with a lot – perhaps too much – on its mind, most of it revealed in Joe’s over-egged stream-of-consciousness voiceover. It skewers millennial hipsters (Beck’s trust-fund boyf has an artisanal soda start-up), pretentious poetry groups and romcom tropes but doesn’t skimp on tense set-pieces, knowing laughs and, in the third episode, one of the most embarrassing sex scenes in modern TV. As the old saying goes, the course of darkly obsessional, social media-fuelled love never runs true.

Simon Cowell plans X Factor revamp Simon Cowell has announced X Factor to be 'over as we know it' and is said to be plotting a huge celebrity revamp to recreate Strictly Come Dancing, but with singers. The music mogul, 59, is said to be determined to 'freshen up' the competition, by casting a range of stars.' The X Factor will reportedly implement the changes for the

upcoming series of the show, with soap actors, newsreaders and comedians being brought on board in the hope of improving viewing figures. The new format - which is still being discussed - has reportedly been described as 'Strictly Come Dancing with singers'. A source said: 'Bradley Walsh was the biggest selling artist of 2016. They could

find a similar type of celebrity not known for their musical skills – and make them even more of a star.' In November 2016, Coronation Street actor Bradley released his debut album, consisting of covers of well-known jazz hits. It became the biggest-selling debut album by a British artist in 2016, selling 111,650 copies. It is also claimed that within the next

series, there will be a separate X Factor champions segment – featuring stars from X Factor shows around the world. The show's reported major revamp comes after 2018's viewing figures dropped to lowest since the show's launch in 2004 The X Factor returned in 2018 with a total of 5.7 million viewers - down 500,000 on 2017's initial auditions show.

feared becoming a victim of the show's curse when he was paired with attractive partners. The pair met on the 2013 series of the show before sparking up a romance one year later. It was also claimed that Countdown star Rachel, 33, felt Pasha, 39, was underpaid for his role on Strictly. A source said: 'Rachel is adamant Pasha is being paid far less than his hours

deserve. Strictly has a particularly gruelling schedule and when you weigh that up against his pay packet, she feels it's not worth it. 'Pasha isn't one of the more unionist dancers who push back at producers when they're working 18 hour days. He just sees it as part of the job.' Blonde beauty Rachel ended her 15month marriage to James Gilbert

Strictly dancer quits over show curse Strictly Come Dancing's Pasha Kovalev quit 'because girlfriend Rachel Riley feared show's curse and claimed ballroom pro was underpaid'. three months into the series. In November 2018, she admitted that she found it hard watching Pasha compete on the show with other women. Discussing the curse, she said: 'It's left its mark. It just makes me feel nervous — so I make myself busy when it's on. I leave Pasha to it.' The Russian ballroom pro walked away with the glitterball back in 2014,

Pasha tweeted on Wednesday: 'After scoring 93 perfect tens, reaching 4 finals and lifting 1 glitter ball, it's time for me to find a new challenge and so I've decided to make last year, my final season on Strictly. 'I've had eight fantastic years, full of wonderful memories, thanks to the incredible partners, professionals and a myriad of behind the scenes teams who all work to make Strictly the amazing production that it is.'

VALENCIA GOVERNMENT BUYS LANDMARK PEAK

On a clear day, from an altitude of 1,813 metres at the top of Penyagolosa, the second-highest mountain in Spain’s Valencia region, it is possible to see the Ebro river mouth, the Cape of San Antonio in Alicante, and even the Balearic Islands. Although it is a well-known natural landmark, few people know that the top of this mountain, located in Castellón province, is in private hands. After declaring the mountain and the space around it a natural park, the Valencia regional government has bought a third of the summit for €1.14 million. From now on, 150 hectares of this peak, which is known as the Stone

Giant (Gegant de Pedra in the Valencian language), are now part of public heritage. It’s been more than two years since the Valencia executive first showed an interest in acquiring the second-tallest mountain in the region after Cerro Calderón, which has an elevation of 1,838 meters. Regional premier Ximo Puig revealed the purchase a few months ago, but the move did not get approval until this past December and it was made official three weeks ago by a notary in Castellón. A symbolic act was held recently at the summit and attended by the regional leader. “It is much more than an incredible natural space, it also holds great emotional value for us,” said Puig.

At the top of Penyagolosa, there are at least two private estates: the Mas de Sanahuja, with 150 hectares and La Cambreta, covering 400 hectares. The Valencia government has bought the first, where the primary access trail to the summit is located. While the purchase had been under consideration for a long time, the government was persuaded to start negotiations when the owners of La Cambreta applied for a license to exploit a large game preserve. “We got in touch with the third generation of owners of Mas de Sanahuja, which includes 11 heirs, and with the owners of La Cambreta. We encountered willingness with

the first estate, but not so much with the second,” says Adolf Sanmartín, a Valencia government official. Valuations and appraisals were made, and there was even the insinuation of expropriation, but in the end the deal was closed. Similar efforts with the owners of the larger estate did not prosper. There is no doubt about Penyagolosa’s value. It belongs to Red Natura 2000, a network of nature protection areas in the European Union. It has areas of special protection for birds; it is a reference point for hikers and now hosts a mountain racing competition, which draws competitors from around the world. It is also home to the sanctuary of Saint Joan of Penyagolosa, a local pilgrimage site that has great tourism potential. For the heirs of Mas de Sanahuja, the property has more sentimental than economic value. “As it is a natural park, activity is limited. You need a lot of money to restore the farmhouse and buy out the rest of the shares. This is why, in the end, a decision was made to sell,” says Charo, whose grandmother bought the farmhouse in 1945. The farmhouse is full of stories and anecdotes, and not all of them are good. Charo remembers the hardships that her ancestors endured after the Spanish Civil War, the Maquis guerrilla fighters who raided the place looking for food, and the Civil Guard’s reprisals. When her grandmother died in 1974, the estate’s heirs distanced themselves from the property. Although they received purchase offers, it was hard to settle upon one due to the fragmented nature of the

estate. Since the 1980s, visitor numbers have multiplied. “We would like for everything to be restored so that it will have a good future. Somehow it is still ours because it is public,” says Charo. Revitalisation For Vistabella, one of the three municipalities that Penyagolosa towers over, the natural park is of vital importance. Belén Bachero, the mayor of this village of 350 inhabitants, hopes that efficient management will accompany the purchase. “I suppose that Puig will meet with the mayors of the area to see what use we can give it. We hope that the mountain will be revitalised because we live off of it,” says Bachero, who once officiated a marriage on Penyagolosa’s summit. Carmen, a local resident who preferred not to give her surname, has lived in the area for the past 25 years and knows the farmhouses and its shepherds. Gregorio, the only one of them who still frequents the mountain pastures, will retire in a year or two. It will be the first time since the Middle Ages that there will be no grazing in that part of the summit, even though it is believed that grazing has helped prevent wildfires on the mountain. Pressure on the Stone Giant grows with every passing year. “There are months when visitor numbers to the top soar above 3,000 (when the weather is nice),” explains Carmen. “We have to take care of the mountain and preserve the landscape, because we humans devour everything in our path.”

COLEEN ROONEY REMOVES WEDDING RING

Coleen Rooney has been spotted without her wedding ring, amid claims she’s ordered Wayne to go into rehab to quit boozing to save their marriage. Mum-of-four Coleen is said to have read Wayne the riot act after he was seen partying into the small hours with a blonde bar-maid over Superbowl weekend. In the run-up to Valentine’s Day, Coleen was spotted clutching four red balloons, thought to be for each of her sons, but was noticeably without her wedding band. Wayne was said to have remained in the car during her supermarket jaunt. According to a source, Coleen has asked Wayne to go to

rehab for a second time and seek treatment for his drinking after being humiliated by his behaviour. The insider told the media: “Wayne has been here before. In 2016 after England’s humiliating Euros exit to Iceland, he sought help from a professional counsellor for regular sessions to help him overcome his problems. “He boozes because of ongoing issues he’s been dealing with his whole adult life and Coleen feels Wayne needs to receive more treatment to prevent the threat of complete selfdestruction - and salvage their marriage.” UK papers also report that Coleen’s mum has jetted out to Washington to support her

following the latest scandal. Shortly before Christmas Wayne was arrested for public intoxication at a Washington airport. Then in 2017 Wayne nearly broke his marriage up for good when he was caught drink-driving the car of a woman he picked up in a club. He and Laura Simpson had spent the evening together drinking and chatting before leaving in her Beetle. But Wayne was caught behind the wheel of her car almost three times over the limit and was handed a twoyear driving ban, 120 hours of community work and £300,000 in fines from Everton FC. Coleen, who at the time was pregnant with their son Cass, eventually forgave her errant husband, but admitted in an emotional public statement that they’d spent time apart. “I know I would be fine on my own, with just me and my children, but I don’t want to live like that, I want to try and continue our marriage and live as a family, because that’s what I want to do,” she wrote on Facebook . “I’m not saying everything is fine and forgotten about, but we are as good as can be at this point, I’m not the type of person to put a show on and say we’re all loved-up ... I’m just real.”

Healthy foods, that aren’t

The next time you take a stroll down your grocery’s health food aisle, take note: Most of what you’re looking at probably doesn’t belong there ... Fruit smoothies - Just because they pack lots of fruit, bottled smoothies are not necessarily healthy. But most are also incredibly high in sugar and calories. A 15-ounce bottle of Mighty Mango-flavoured Naked Juice has 290 calories, 68 grams of carbs, and a whopping 57 grams of sugar - a 16-ounce bottle of Coke has 44 grams of sugar. Sports drinks - We’ve been wrongly convinced that we need sugar water to prepare and refuel after a hot date with the gym. In reality, exercise scientists recommend drinking water and eating or drinking 20 grams of protein, since studies suggest that it helps recondition and build muscles.

However, soft drink companies make the majority of sports drinks that you see on grocery-store shelves. Orange juice - Orange juice has become a required aspect of the American breakfast. In reality, juicing fruits removes all of their fiber, the key ingredient that keeps you feeling full and satisfied until your next meal. The result: mostly just sugar and water. And a high-sugar, low-protein diet can increase hunger pangs and mood swings and leave you with low energy. Low fat everything! - We’ve been led to believe that low-fat products will lead to increased overall health and weight loss. An eight-year trial involving almost 50,000 women suggested that that’s highly unlikely. When roughly half of them went on a low-fat diet, they didn’t lower their risk of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, or heart disease.

Plus, they didn’t lose much weight, if any. Gluten free - A lot of people think that gluten - a protein composite found in wheat, barley, and other grains that gives breads their chewiness - is bad for them, and that anything with a “gluten-free” label is, well, not. In reality, unless you’re one of the few who actually suffer from celiac disease, eating gluten probably won’t have any negative effects on you. Multivits - Close to half of adults take vitamins every day. Yet decades’ worth of research hasn’t found any justification for our pill-popping habit. That isn’t to say we don’t need small amounts of vitamins to survive - without vitamins like A, C, and E, for example, we have a hard time turning food into energy and can develop conditions like rickets or scurvy. Here’s the thing: Research shows that we get more than enough of these substances from what we eat, so no need for a pill. Egg substitutes - For decades, we’ve been led to believe that eggs are bad for us because they’re packed with cholesterol. Flavourless egg substitutes ranging from Egg Beaters to preblended cartons of egg whites packed grocery store shelves in the 1990s and early 2000s. As it turns out, the cholesterol in eggs doesn’t significantly raise blood cholesterol for the vast majority of us.

FOOD INTOLERANCES AND ALLERGIES Physical reactions to certain foods are common, but most are caused by a food intolerance rather than a food allergy. A food intolerance can cause some of the same signs and symptoms as a food allergy, so people often confuse the two. A true food allergy causes an immune system reaction that affects numerous organs in the body. In some cases, an allergic food reaction can be severe or lifethreatening. In con-trast, food intolerance symptoms are generally less serious and often limited to digestive problems. If you have a food intolerance, you may be able to eat small amounts of the offending food without trouble. You may also be able to prevent a reaction. For example, if you have lactose intolerance, you may be able to drink lactose-free milk or take lactase enzyme pills (Lactaid) to aid digestion. Causes of food intolerance include: n Absence of an enzyme needed to fully digest a food. Lactose intolerance is a common example. n Irritable bowel syndrome. This chronic condition can cause cramping, constipation and diarrhoea. n Sensitivity to food additives. For example, sulfites used to preserve dried fruit, canned goods and wine can trigger asthma attacks in sensitive people. n Recurring stress or psychological factors. Sometimes the mere thought of a food may make you sick. The reason is not fully understood. n Celiac disease. Celiac disease has some features of a true food allergy because it involves the immune system. However, symptoms are mostly gastro-

intestinal, and people with celiac disease are not at risk of anaphylaxis. This chronic digestive condition is triggered by eating gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains. If you have a reaction after eating a particular food, see your doctor to determine whether you have a food intolerance or a food allergy. If you have a food allergy, you may be at risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) - even if past reactions have been mild. Learn how to recognize a severe allergic reaction and know what to do if one occurs. You may need to carry an emergency epinephrine shot (Adrenaclick, Auvi-Q, EpiPen) for emergency self-treatment. If you have a food intolerance, your doctor may recommend steps to aid digestion of certain foods or to treat the underlying condition causing your reaction. The term “food hypersensitivity” refers to both food allergies and food intolerances. The two most common causes are:

Dairy Lactose is a sugar found in milk and dairy products. It is broken down in the body by an enzyme called lactase, which is necessary in order for lactose to be properly digested and absorbed. Lactose intolerance is caused by a shortage of lactase enzymes, which causes an inability to digest lactose and results in digestive symptoms such as: abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, gas and/or nausea Lactose intolerance is extremely common. In fact, it is estimated that 65percent of the world’s population has trouble

digesting lactose. Intolerance can be diagnosed several ways, including a lactose-tolerance test, lactose breath test or stool PH test. If you think you may have an intolerance to lactose, avoid dairy products that contain lactose, such as milk and ice cream. Aged cheeses and fermented products like kefir may be easier for those with lactose intolerance to tolerate, as they contain less lactose than other dairy products. Gluten Gluten is the general name given to proteins found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale. Several conditions relate to gluten, including celiac disease, nonceliac gluten sensitivity and wheat allergy. Celiac disease involves an immune response, which is why it is classified as an autoimmune disease. When people with celiac disease are exposed to gluten, the immune system attacks the small intestine and can cause serious harm to the digestive system. Wheat allergies are often confused with celiac disease due to their similar symptoms. They differ in that wheat allergies generate an allergy-producing antibody to proteins in wheat, while celiac disease is caused by an abnormal immune reaction to gluten in particular. However, many people experience unpleasant symptoms even when they test negative for celiac disease or a wheat allergy. This is known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity, a milder form of gluten intolerance that has been estimated to impact anywhere from 0.5 to 13 percent of the population. Symptoms of non-celiac gluten

sensitivity are similar to those of celiac disease and include: bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation, headaches, fatigue, joint pain, skin rash, depression or anxiety and anaemia. Both celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity are managed with a gluten-free diet. It involves adhering to a diet free from foods and products that contain gluten, including: n Bread n Pasta n Cereals n Beer n Baked goods n Crackers n Sauces, dressing and gravies, especially soy sauce Other Common Food Intolerances There are many other foods and ingredients to which people may be intolerant, including: n Aspartame: Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is commonly used as a sugar substitute. Although research is conflicting, some studies have reported

side effects like depression and irritability in people with a sensitivity. n Eggs: Some people have difficulty digesting egg whites but are not allergic to eggs. Egg intolerance is associated with symptoms like diarrhoea and abdominal pain. n MSG: Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, is used as a flavour-enhancing additive in foods. More research is needed, but some studies have shown that large amounts can cause headache, hives and chest pain. n Food colourings like Red 40 and Yellow 5 have been shown to cause hypersensitivity reactions in some people. Symptoms include hives, skin swelling and stuffy nose. n Yeast: People with a yeast intolerance generally experience less severe symptoms than those with a yeast allergy. Symptoms are typically limited to the digestive system. n Sugar alcohols: Sugar alcohols are often used as zero calorie alternatives to sugar. They can cause major digestive issues in some people, including bloating and diarrhoea.

Double Standard

He wants a sibling

I was not allowed to bring my boyfriend to my sister’s wedding because ‘I’d only just met him’, so I attended the wedding alone. My boyfriend is now my fiance, and we are planning our wedding. I am very tempted not to invite my sister’s new ‘on-off’ boyfriend to our wedding, to show her how hurtful it is. My parents’ viewpoint is that my sister should be allowed to bring the boyfriend. I have pointed out the difference in how I was treated, but they say that this is all in the past.

My 8 year old son has been pestering me and my husband to have another child, so that he is not alone. To begin with I ignored it, but it’s been going on for over 12 months and he won’t let up. My husband and I hadn’t planned to have any more children and eventually when my son would not take no for an answer, his father told him to drop the subject in no uncertain terms. Now, he is working on me alone and it’s getting to me.

OK, everyone is older and wiser now it seems, although I can well understand your feelings. If I were you, I would have the conversation with your sister about what happened at her own wedding, and point out the discrepancy so that she realises how hurt you were. Then, I would take the bigger stance and tell her that you are not going to make the same mistake, and that her boyfriend is welcome to attend your wedding. This should make everyone think about the rights and wrongs, at least. You don’t want to spoil your wedding with family fall-outs.

This is not a problem I have heard of before. Get him a dog or a cat. It’s not his decision whether you and your husband have another child. Sit him down, say he can have a pet and then be firm and tell him the matter is not to be raised again.

THREE SURPRISING FOODS THE QUEEN REFUSES TO EAT!

Proving that royalty really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, it’s emerged that the Queen doesn’t eat pasta, potatoes or garlic. Royal chef Darren McGrady, who has cooked for the monarch for 15 years, has revealed that the Queen doesn’t eat starchy foods unless they are served as part of a state dinner. Instead, her daily diet centres around the very specific dishes of grilled fish or chicken with two types of vegetables. She also enjoys big bowls of salad and fresh fruit. Speaking of fruit, she has a very particular way of maximising the potential of bananas. “With a banana, she’ll cut off the bottoms and cut the banana length-wise, and then cut the banana into tiny slices to eat with a fork,” McGrady said. The Queen is also not a fan of garlic and her chefs are told to keep it from her food. “We can never serve anything with

garlic or too much onion,” McGrady said. “We also couldn’t serve meat that was rare, as she likes her meat more well done.” In terms of her guilty foodie pleasures, the Queen likes chocolate biscuit cake so much that it travels with her all over the country. If Her Majesty was travelling to Windsor Castle and there was uneaten chocolate cake left over, a senior chef will travel on a train with the dessert in tow. “Now the Chocolate Biscuit Cake is the only cake that goes back again and again and again every day until it’s all gone,” McGrady said. “'She’ll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake.” Seems like the Queen is just like the rest of us then, who can resist the last slice of chocolate cake?

THE NEW G&T ADDITIONS FOR 2019

No gin and tonic is complete without a good garnish. While many of us have been opting for a slice of lemon, lime or grapefruit, there’s something entirely different we should be trying in 2019: coffee and orange. According to Raj Nagra, Global Brand Ambassador of Bombay Sapphire, a caffeine hit is the perfect addition to a classic gin and tonic. “The addition of cold brew coffee to a classic Bombay gin

and tonic is a surprising combination, but the two go really well together!” Raj claims. Pairing cold brew coffee with Fever Tree tonic water and gin, he also suggests adding an orange slice for the perfect tipple. But why orange? Well, the bright citrus notes of the fruit help to counteract any bitterness of coffee. Simply make up a classic G&T (50ml gin is preferable) and then once topped with tonic water, pour 20ml of cold brew coffee over the top. But if that’s not your thing and you’re after something a little fresher, you need to try melon. Sam Carter, Senior Global Ambassador at Bombay loves cutting a long slice of melon (he prefers honeydew or cantaloupe) and adding it to a copa-style glass with ice, a melon liqueur, pink grapefruit juice and then topped with cucumber tonic. “I love melon because it’s so fresh and melons have got such a vibrant colour to them. They’re fun and unusual,” he said.

“I like to put something in a G&T people wouldn’t expect; I like to break with convention. You can get quite a bitter, earthy, dry flavour to gin, so naturally the sweetness of the melon can just balance it out.” So what other unusual garnishes does he reckon we should be trying instead? For something a little more savoury, how about olive oil? ... Yes, really. Sam recommends adding a dash, or a spritz, of really goodquality olive oil (or even truffle oil) for a different style of G&T. “It’s not always about taste, it’s about aroma too, as well as texture and the mouthfeel of gin,” he said. “Gin tends to give a creamy, buttery, smooth texture and olive oil can add real texture to a G&T, especially highlighting the grassy notes of juniper.” He then recommends serving it with something like Fever Tree’s Mediterranean tonic with some basil, or even cherry tomatoes. If that sounds a step too far another great garnish combo that most of us can get on board with is ginger and fresh mint and using ginger ale instead of tonic water. If trying new garnishes isn’t the perfect excuse to get friends over for drinks asap, we don’t know what is.

Organic food healthier than farmed products Having organic farmed meat and milk is better for your health than non-organic produce, because it contains around 50 per cent more omega-3 fatty acids, according to a major study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. An international team of researchers, from universities and scientific institutes in nine countries, examined the nutritional merits of organic versus nonorganic milk and meat. Some 196 studies on milk and 67 on meat were reviewed in the largest study of its kind, which found that the benefits also extend to organic milk products such as butter, cheese, and yoghurt. Organic milk contains 40 per cent more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) - which is linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and obesity. And although it has lower levels of the essential mineral iodine, it has higher

concentrations of iron and Vitamin E. Researchers also found that organic meat had slightly lower concentrations of two saturated fats linked to heart disease. The greater use of grazing, with animals eating a more natural grassbased diet, is a key reason for the differences, according to lead researcher Professor Carlo Leifert, from Newcastle University’s school of agriculture, food and rural development. “Several of these differences stem from organic livestock production and are brought about by differences in production intensity, with outdoorreared, grass-fed animals producing milk and meat that is consistently higher in desirable fatty acids such as the omega3s, and lower in fatty acids that can promote heart disease and other chronic diseases,” he said. One of the researchers, Chris Seal,

Professor of food and human nutrition at Newcastle University, commented: “Omega-3s are linked to reductions in cardiovascular disease, improved neurological development and function, and better immune function.” He added: “But getting enough in our diet is difficult. Our study suggests that switching to organic would go some way towards improving intakes of these important nutrients.” This builds on a study published by the same research team in 2014, which revealed that organic fruit and vegetables contained up to 60 per cent more antioxidants than non-organic crops. Commenting on the latest findings on the benefits of organic produce, Helen Browning, chief executive of the Soil Association, said: “This research confirms what many people have always thought was true -what you feed farm animals and how you treat them affects the quality of the food - whether it’s milk, cheese or a cut of meat.” She added: “Following research in 2014 confirming nutritional differences between organic and non-organic crops like fruit and vegetables – we can now say for certain that organic farming makes organic food different.” But Ian Givens, professor of food chain nutrition at the University of Reading, urged caution: “The differences between organic and conventionally farmed produce should be evaluated as part of the whole human diet. When they are, most differences are very small indeed.” And meat and milk remain “poor sources of polyunsaturated fatty acid and contain large amounts of potentially harmful saturated and trans fats,” commented Tom Sanders, professor emeritus of nutrition and dietetics at King's College London.

Recent cold front increases visits to paediatric A&E due to bronchiolitis The recent cold front made bronchiolitis the most common motive for consultation in children under two and infants arriving at Accident and Emergency. “The symptoms of this infection may vary

greatly,” explains Doctor Adalgisa de Caro,Paediatrician at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia, “and usually start with a cold, nasal mucus, coughing and, sometimes, fever. After one or two days, the cough worsens and the

child’s breathing becomes more agitated. Some of them may also experience difficulty breathing and have sounds in their chest, such as whistling or wheezing.” This type of virus has a seasonal pattern,

Stricter monitoring is required in infants under six months

presenting during the cold months of the year, in particular during cold fronts, such as the one we experienced last year. Infants under six months, and those that were born prematurely, are at greater risk of coming down with severe bronchiolitis, or requiring hospital treatment, “as are babies with severe heart or lung conditions, such as cystic fibrosis or bronchiopulmonary dysplasia, and those with immune system deficiencies,” states Doctor De Caro. Its transmission mechanism is from person to person, due to which the child should not be in contact with family members who have a respiratory infection or a cold. “If this is not possible, avoid coughing close to the child, and wash your hands with soap and water before picking him or her up. You should also avoid crowds, like those at shopping centres or day care centres,” suggests Doctor Maria Ángeles Martín, Paediatrician at del Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia. Another factor that favours infection, and that can worsen its evolution, is tobacco smoke, due to which we advise not smoking close to minors said Dr Martín. The natural course of bronchiolitis can last between 7 and 10 days. “But it is between the second and third day when things can take a turn for the worse,” indicates Doctor Martín, “which is why it is very important for parents and caretakers to know how

to recognize the signs and symptoms of breathing difficulties that should alert them to go to a healthcare centre.” Treatment Advice As this pathology has a viral origin, there is no specific or curative treatment. “The objective of the treatment is to control the symptoms through measures such as nasal flushing with saline solution, sleeping in a semi-seated position, and avoiding contact with tobacco smoke,” advises Doctor De Caro. This infection usually includes a fever, due to which anti-febrile medications, such as paracetamol, can be given to alleviate it. “Sometimes bronchodilators are indicated, though their use for bronchiolitis is very controversial, since their efficacy has not been proven in most cases. Depending on the clinical characteristics and the age of the child, the paediatrician may try salbutamol and, in case of a positive response, prescribe it for treatment; otherwise, he or she will recommend all the aforementioned measures, and periodic follow-ups to monitor the child’s evolution,” specifies the specialist from Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia, Maria Ángeles Martín. This respiratory infection requires stricter monitoring in infants under six months and, in particular, in those under three months, since they are at greater risk of developing complications.

Keith Richards opts for clean living Rolling Stones' hellraiser Keith Richards has revealed that he's cut down on hard liquor and cigarettes in a bid to live a cleaner life...after December turned into 'one long party' for his 75th birthday. The Rolling Stones rocker announced he has started 2019 on a health kick, after December turned into 'one long party' for his 75th birthday and 35th wedding anniversary with wife Patti Hansen at his lavish Turks & Caicos house on Parrot Cay. The Gimme Shelter hitmaker said: “I've knocked the hard stuff on the head. I have a little wine with meals, and a Guinness or a beer or two, but otherwise… no.” “Mind you, if I meet you in a bar and you say, 'Do you want a drink?' – heheheh – I wouldn't turn it down! I'm not a puritan in these matters. It's just that it's not on the daily menu anymore.” When asked if he had ever tried to give up cigarettes, the guitarist said: “I have tried. So far, unsuccessfully! Lou Reed claimed nicotine was harder to quit than heroin.” “I just pick 'em up and light 'em up without thinking about it. But lately, in fact – spread the news! – I've managed to cut it down by a substantial amount every day, and I'm still working on it. Because I realised I don't need it. I realised it's just a useless habit. But hey, when you're 75, habits are pretty ingrained.” Asked how he stays in shape, the star revealed he relies on an extremely basic regime to maintain his honed frame. He said: “I get up. Ummm. And then, uh, you know, I sit down. I don't do none of this trotting around, I think it's bad for you. It's bad on the joints, especially on concrete. I don't go with that. It's just not

for me. It works for some guys, but y'know, it's just… Mmm. Oh, and when I go to the islands, I do quite a bit of swimming.'” Despite his hectic lifestyle, jetting all over the world for gigs with the Stones, the star said he still doesn't own a mobile phone and says he's 'pretty technically illiterate'.

He said: “I rely upon my kids or the wife to… just look it up! Google it or something! I don't touch those things. I've never liked phones, you see.” 2019 will see Keith embark on the U.S leg of the Stones No Filter tour with bandmates Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts, calling at 13 US stadiums during a two-month period this summer. Keith said: “Everybody wants to work as long as they can and feel good about

it. Our [2018] tour in Britain and Europe was fantastic, the band was rocking. Until we got to Warsaw and somebody said, That's the last show…' Oh no man, it was just getting going! “So when the proposition came up to play America in 2019, everybody jumped at it. It's what you do. If you give me 80,000 people, I feel right at home. There's

something also about the harmless joy in turning loads of other people on. I wouldn't want to disappoint those people, doing the 'Ohh, I don't feel like it. “If I didn't feel like it, I wouldn't do it. Nor would any of us. The roar of the grease paint, the smell of the crowd – it gets ya! You can't stay away.” The Stones are also about to start recording their new album. Keith said: 'We're in the studio in a couple of weeks,

the whole kit and caboodle. The Stones with Don Was producing, in LA. We'll have it done this year, at some point. We'll put down as much as we can for a week or so, and then we're on the road. So we'll see what happens after that.” The Rolling Stones, of which Richards is a founding member, are so famed for their hedonism and debauchery that their actions in the bands heyday have set the bar for what it meant to be a decadent rock star ever since. Keith, known as Keef by die-hard fans. instantly set himself apart from the other band members for his raucous antics. He was arrested and charged five times for drugs offences: in 1967, twice in 1973, in 1977, and in 1978. At his first trial he was sentenced to a year in prison for allowing cannabis to be smoked on his property, though this was later overturned. However the band were subsequently relentlessly pursued by police throughout their 1972 North America tour - dubbed the 'Cocaine and Tequila Sunrise tour' - which was when they first started book up entire floors of hotels. On the way a show in Nebraska, the Stones were pulled over by the police, who uncovered an enormous stash of illegal drugs. Nothing came of it - apart from a $165.50 fine for reckless driving - but Richards says of the tour in his biography: “The State Department had noted riots (true), civil disobedience (also true), illicit sex (whatever that is), and violence across the United States.” Facing a minimum sentence of seven years, Richards evaded jail time by

striking a plea bargain that including holding a show to raise money for the blind. He finally quit cocaine after he fell from a tree in Fiji and suffered a severe head trauma that required live-saving surgery in 2006. While he still allows himself the 'occasional' glass of wine or beer, Keith told Rolling Stone in December 2018, that curbing his drinking has been an 'adjustment'. He said: “You can call it that, yeah. But I don't notice any difference really – except for I don't drink. I wasn't feeling [right]. I've done it. I didn't want that anymore.” More mellow Ronnie Wood, himself sober for eight years - told Rolling Stone that Richards has become 'a pleasure to work with,' since he cut back on the substances and alcohol. 'Much more mellow. He's open to more ideas, whereas before I'd kind of grit my teeth and go, "He's gonna give me some shit for saying this." Now, he'll say, "That's cool, man",' Wood said. Wood said that the old Richards used to go over the top and could get nasty if he drank too much, but he realised this and started to cut down slowly. Richards said there was an 'interesting' difference playing onstage sober than his previous alcohol-fuelled performances, and Wood agreed that now the two guitarists work 'more conscientiously' when it comes to their guitar riffs, weaving them together more carefully. The latest leg of the Rolling Stones tour kicks off on April 20 at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.

Private insurance soars in Spain following cuts to public healthcare Growing numbers of people are taking out private health insurance in Spain. The figure has grown by over one million since 2013, after the government made cuts to public healthcare at the height of the economic crisis. One in every five households has private health insurance, at an annual average cost of €1,186, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). The sector experienced a growth rate of 5.6 percent in 2018. Some of these new customers turned to private health coverage after having bad experiences in the public healthcare system. However, there are several

Rubén Sánchez, spokesman for the consumer association FACUA. “The degradation of the public system, which is a PP strategy, leads people into dual coverage, to a private specialist that will let them skip the waiting list,” adds Marciano Sánchez Bayle, spokesman for the Federation of Associations for Public Health (FADSP). “Yet all surveys show that when people have a big health problem, they turn to the public system. And what nobody mentions is that companies deduct the insurance they take out for their workers, which means that in the end we are all funding private insurance.” “We run the risk of creating two speed

reasons for taking the step such as not being eligible for fertility treatments in the public healthcare system, or just because your company will pay for it. In 2012, the Spanish government, then run by the Popular Party (PP), announced drastic cuts to public healthcare. With the economic crisis in full swing, the goal was to save close to €7.3 billion. When investment in public healthcare began to falter, patient satisfaction with the system started to plunge as well, particularly as people were put on longer and longer waiting lists for all kinds of conditions. Soon after that, private insurers began seeing a spike in new customers. By 2017, there were 11.5 million people on a private health plan, a 10 percent rise from 2013. A spokesman for the insurer industry association Unespa says that the rise in clients is due to the fact that “companies and SMEs are offering them as a social benefit that is highly appreciated by employees. It is a tool to hold on to talent.” “The main drivers of [private health cover] are deterioration, saturation, waiting lists and cuts to services,” says

lanes in our access to health,” says Juan Oliva, a former president of the Association of the Health Economy who teaches at the University of Castilla-La Mancha. “A fast lane for those who have private insurance, and a slow lane for those who don’t. Public healthcare is a very solid institution, but if part of the population quits it, it will break and deteriorate.” One of the most highly appreciated benefits of private insurance is quick access to appointments with soughtafter specialists such as gynaecologists and ophthalmologists. If they had a choice, 37 percent of Spaniards would go see a private specialist, according to Health Ministry figures. Surveys show that 74 percent of people with private coverage have gone to see a specialist in the last year, and half of them have undergone some kind of medical test. This percentage goes down significantly when it comes to seeing the family doctor or going to the emergency room. Waiting times Alberto, an engineer

who

felt

abdominal pain, has already seen three specialists and undergone four tests since November. “Imagine how long that would have taken in the public system,” he notes. There is no need to imagine. If he were a resident of the Canary Islands, he would wait 105 days on average, while in the Basque Country he would wait 22 days, according to the latest official data. Other regions are somewhere in between. Amanda, a graphic designer, took out the private insurance offered by her

company when she developed similar symptoms to her father, who died of a cancer with a genetic component. She went to see a specialist. “As I was explaining the situation, he filled out forms to get me a gastroscopy and an intolerance test. He saw me twice until the treatment worked,” she recalls. Whether necessary or not, those tests made her feel better. She, like the others, was once a proud user of public healthcare. Until they weren’t anymore.

Private healthcare is also on the rise among expat residents, particularly Brits, who are unsure of where Brexit will leave them in terms of Healthcare. Many Brits are taking out private policies pre-Brexit to give them peace of mind, knowing whatever happens within the agreement or no deal they will be covered for comprehensive medical care. Private doctors and clinics and also seeing an increase in foreign patients who want to be able to see a GP as required.

Victoria Beckham branches into the beauty industry Victoria Beckham has delighted her 24.4 million Instagram fans with the exciting news that she is launching her very first beauty brand! The wife of David Beckham shared a video of her standing in front of a mirror with 'Beauty' written over it in pink lipstick - how very chic. Wearing a monochrome stripe top, she told her followers: "I am very excited to announce that I am about to launch Victoria Beckham Beauty!" she added: "Cannot wait to be able to share it with you!!" Although makeup and beauty is different to bags and shoes, this move comes as no major surprise to big fans of VB. During a Facebook Live back in March last year, the 44-year-old announced: "I am currently in the process of creating my own colour, my own line of skincare creams, and a perfume. As a woman, I want to make the things I need in my life, the things that are missing." And of course, back in 2016, the former Spice Girl collaborated with makeup giant Estée Lauder where she launched a 14piece product collection. Her bronzing powders, lipsticks and eye shadows sold out immediately. The fashion mogul often shares her favourite beauty buys with fans on social media - name checking products she regularly uses. Recently, the brunette beauty revealed she loves a variety of

purse-busting buys including The Organic Pharmacy's self tan, as well as face cream by Dr. Barbara Sturm. Not everything she enjoys is mega pricey though - VB also swears by the Caudalie Beauty Elixir which you can pick up for £10, the Laura Mercier Translucent powder which costs £29 and of course the Weleda Skin Food moisturiser which incredibly costs just £9.

Tech Fact Penny via email asks: Hello Aunty. I print a lot of emails every day but most of what I print is just simple text so could happily be black and white but most of the time a load of colour adverts are included and we seem to be using as much expensive colour ink as we are black. Is there a way to remove or disable the colour cartridge? We tried this but we get an error message “insert cartridge” and I can only print the document after I have put the colour one back in. Aunty Says: Hi Penny. No you won’t be able to remove the colour cartridge without an error messages from the printer but you can set up your printer to print only in black and white or draft/economy mode. The easiest way to do this is by holding down the ‘Ctrl’ key and pressing ‘P’ just before you are ready to print. Click the ‘properties’ button and this should display various printing options. All printers and programs are a little different, but the principles are the same. William via email asks: The email @ key on my keyboard seems to have disappeared since I had a big Windows Update install. Well it does work but it is in a different place. I have an Asus laptop with Windows 10,

Aunty Says: Hi William. It’s possible that the Windows update has changed what it thinks is your keyboard to USA. For some mad reason the DMK (Department for Mice and keyboards) decided that the (@) should be in a different place on UK, US and Spanish keyboards and the most common problem over here is when the US

keyboard setting is set instead of Spanish. So click on the start button and then the cog icon. Select “Time & Language” and then “region and language” At the bottom you should see which languages you have installed and from here if you click on the “option” button you can add and remove keyboard layouts so you only have one. Brian via email asks: Hi Aunty. I would like to back up everything on

my computer in case of a crash but I’m not sure how to go about it. I have a lot of important documents and photos which I do not want to lose and would like to store them elsewhere for safety sake. I have a few books on computers but they are not particularly helpful & you can't ask a book questions. I will be glad of any help you can give me relating to this. Also I would like to back up separately i.e. documents and photos etc. Aunty Says: Hello Brian. Probably the easiest way these days is to copy it all onto a USB memory stick and stash it away in a drawer somewhere safe. You can pick up a 32GB USB stick for under €15 and that will hold thousands of photos and documents. When you plug the USB stick in, it will appear as a drive letter in Windows and I simply use the mouse right click to copy and paste documents and photos from one folder to another. Well that’ll do for another week, email your problems to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

Towing a trailer The Basics

Trailers fall into two distinctive categories when it comes to classifying them for normal use on the roads of Spain, those below 750kg and those above 750kg maximum weight. A small trailer, or “Remolque Ligero”, which has a maximum weight less than 750kg does not have to be registered. You must however clearly display the number plate of the vehicle towing the trailer on the rear, which must also be a certified style of number plate, and must have lights fitted which repeat the actions displayed by the towing vehicle. A larger trailer, which also includes caravans, with a maximum weight over 750kg kilograms, the “Remolque Pesado”, is a different altogether. Firstly, it has to be registered as a separate vehicle and must have its own “Permiso de Circulación”, or log book. It must also have its own registration plate, which is red in colour, and this must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. This

type of trailer is also subject to mandatory testing at an ITV station, and the ITV documents must also be carried with the vehicle. It must also display the number plate of the towing vehicle and have lights on the rear that repeat what the towing vehicle is doing. There are a couple of points to remember when towing a trailer. Your view of the road must not be obscured, which includes the view in your mirrors. All number plates must be of an officially recognised and certified form, handwritten numbers on cardboard for example are not permitted. If you are towing any form of trailer, you must also carry a fire extinguisher with you in the vehicle. We will deal with the matter in more detail another time, not just as a quick note it is worth mentioning that towing another car is not permitted in Spain, and that includes by a so-called A-frame. The only way to tow another vehicle like a car is for it to be on the back of an approved trailer.

Monte smash sorry San Miguel Golf Society Fulgencio for five TEAM:- CARLOS, FERNANDO, MANUAL, MORANTE, ANGEL ALEXIS, CARLOS LORENTE, DAVID FEBAS, ROBERTO, GERMAN, VAZ, DANIEL. SUBS:- STEVEN, DIMITRY, MARIO, ADRIAN, DIEGO. In the latest round of “Battle of the Basement-Dwellers” CD Montesinos took on Sporting San Fulgencio at their temporary home ground of cross-valley rivals Racing San Miguel on Saturday. Monte's pitch is currently being upgraded, so a change of venue for this fixture was necessary. In the corresponding fixture earlier in the season, Fulgencio edged a poor game by a single goal, but this time out, the story was very different. Monte named an unchanged line-up from last week’s loss to AC Torrellano, with the bench consisting of 'keeper Steven, Mario Pastor, ever-improving youth player Adrian and returnees Diego and Dimitry. Still no sign of long injury Maccan returning to the fold though. The game kicked off in bright sunshine in front of a crowd of about a 100, mainly Monte faithful. The first twenty five minutes or so were largely uneventful, with Fulgencio playing pretty triangles in their own third of the field, only the occasional hopeful or wayward punt upfield, easily dealt with by Monte's back pairing of Manual and Morante. Monte, for their part, looked somewhat nervous (to be expected, given their precarious league position), but at least showed some bite in midfield, with the tenacious German and David snapping at the opposition's heels at every opportunity. Carlos Lorente also looked a handful on the left flank. The deadlock was finally broken on the 27th minute when, following a scramble in the Fulgencio area (and a good handball shout being turned down), Daniel sent a fizzing drive through a crowd of players, into the corner of the net. Just three minutes later, following an appalling defensive mix-up, Vaz's commitment to chasing the lost cause paid off when he found himself all alone and contemptuously walked the ball into an empty net. Fulgencio were on the ropes and needed to pick themselves up or they were in real danger of being swamped, having no answer to Monte's quick attacking thrusts both through the middle and down the flanks. They almost pulled one back when a cross from wide left bobbled across the Monte box, only for Fernando to tidy up before the lurking Fulgencio forward could pounce. Fulgencio continued to huff and puff to no avail and Monte ended the half comfortably on top. Half Time: CD Montesinos 2 – 0 Sporting San Fulgencio. If Fulgencio thought they might stage a comeback in the second period, they were rudely awakened when, in the very first minute, Roberto warmed the keepers palms with a stinging shot. Just five minutes later their task got harder when, following excellent work again by Roberto, Morante found time and space in the box, to pivot and shoot high into the Fulgencio net. A clinical finish from the big lad. The Montesinos supporters could hardly believe what they were seeing, their side was almost totally dominating a Fulgencio side that simply had no answer to their play. On the 57th minute, Coach Ruben decided to take off Carlos Lorente, replacing him with Mario and eight

minutes later swapping German for Diego. Both substituted players receiving a warm response from the gathered supporters. Clearly Ruben was looking to freshen things up expecting an onslaught from Fulgencio. That never materialised, in fact, Fulgencio continued to look punch drunk and on the 67th minute the game as a contest was over when following a mazy run into the opposition area, in which he lost the ball twice, the tireless Alex managed to bundle the ball home for Monte's fourth. A just reward for his tenacity and persistence all afternoon. Further substitutions saw David replaced by Adrian and Roberto by Dimitry as Monte took the chance to wind the clock down. The final coup-de-grace was applied when the exceptional Daniel added his second on 86 minutes, coolly slotting home after persistent work from Vaz. Fulgencio had nowhere to go, demoralised and thoroughly outplayed in nearly all areas of the pitch, they had hardly troubled 'keeper Carlos all afternoon. So it was somewhat of a disappointment that, following a momentary lapse of concentration at the back, Fulgencio were allowed a consolation goal, right at the death as it turned out. The Monte Mentals in attendance didn't care though, they had seen their team play well and put an opponent to the sword with ruthless finishing that surely must give some hope for the battles to come. Final Score: CD Montesinos 5 – 1 Sporting San Fulgencio Man of the match was Daniel. Match report by Steve Robinson.

Another good SMGS turnout saw 42 members and 2 guests taking on the typical ex-Polaris course of Hacienda de Riquelme, with its multitude of bunkers, many surrounding greens, and ball devouring clumps of impenetrable grass.

Mulligan on the over-the-water 7th, leaving a putt of a mere one foot. Paul Kavanagh showed how up-and-down the game of golf can be, taking the Abacus’s bottle of Mike Kaylor sponsored excellent red vino, after having been amongst the winning scores last week in Las Ramblas, a very different course to Riquelme Winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Mick Roscoe (31 on CB), 4th Mike Jordan (31 on CB), 3rd Neil Sheldon (34), 2nd Chris Hamblett (35) and 1st, with the day’s best score of 36 points, Carmel McCann. Silver Category: 5th Mike Kaylor (26), 4th Phil de Lacy (27), 3rd Dave Blackburn (28), 2nd Steve Hart (30 on CB) and 1st Pete Cunniff, also with 30 points.

Gold Category: 5th Richard McCann (28), 4th Tony Smale (29 on CB), 3rd Norman Cahill (29 on CB), 2nd Steve Higgins (30) and 1st Jim Imrie with 32 points. Nearest the pins (sponsored by Property Shop): Hole 5 Scotty Phillips, Hole 7 Brian Mulligan, Hole 13 Pete Cunniff, Hole 17 Ramona Baumann. Abacus (sponsored by Mike Kaylor): Paul Kavanagh Best Guest: Andreas Luderman (26). Next week we will be at Altorreal, then on following weeks at Vistabella and La Torre . Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Tony Smale a call on 628227687.

Anything not on a line approaching perfection was in trouble. Throw in some narrow fairways, water alongside three of those, unreadable recently fertilised greens with their every which way undulations, and some horrible pin positions and, voila, the explanation for some very poor scoring. A course set up relatively short and some fine weather did not appear to help most players. However, the difficulties led to what is pretty much unheard of in the society, Bronze category winners outscoring most of those in Gold and Silver. Carmel McCann posted the best score of the day with 36 points, Chris Hamblett running her a close second with 35. The outstanding Property Shop sponsored nearest the pin effort came from Brian

The week started with a 2 ball better ball. Given the original draw, it should have been a ‘high playing with a low handicap’ but some last minute changes left a couple of teams a bit unbalanced. Our winners with 45 points were Marleen Billen and Hendrick Oldenziel, just edging out Dave Pulling and myself who scored 44. Whilst being a very commendable score it didn’t come close to the record set by John Conway and Donna Campbell last year of 53 points. Wednesday saw round one (4 out of 6 cards to count) in our Club Championship Stableford. Opening her account, with a terrific 40 points, was Benedicte Kruse. She was followed by Dave Pulling with 34 and Ron Percival who scored 33 points. Olga Douglas carded 32 to take 4th place, just edging out Peter Radcliffe and Lyndsay Forbes on countback. Four ‘2’s

today with Hendrick Oldenziel getting two of them (one of which was on the par four 11th)! For some of our players today I was reminded of a famous old quote; ‘Golf is a game in which you claim the privileges of age and retain the playthings of childhood’. On Friday we competed a ‘1-2-3 Waltzer’. Taking the honours with a modest 79 points (but great compared to any other team) were Dave Pulling, Tom Hardie, Nora Betts and Peter Wickham. As it was St Valentine’s day on Thursday, another quote sprang to mind; ‘When I die, bury me on the golf course so my husband will visit’. Unfortunately Benedicte has been a little camera shy lately so you’ve got to look at ‘El Presidente’ instead! Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

After being postponed last week due to high winds, the mixed pairs final match in the Quesada Bowls Club Championships resumed on Saturday morning. The winners were Jacqui Highland and Graham Phillips. Congratulations to them and well done to the runners up Violet Campbell and Fred Roberts. In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls hosted Emerald Isle Titans in a very tight match which was reflected in the scores - 6 points each. The shots were 78 Pearls and 62 Titans. The Pearls retain their 3rd place in the league. However, in very windy conditions it was not a good day for Quesada Diamonds away to La Siesta Apollos. The Diamonds lost on 4 rinks and won on 1 rink so the Apollos enjoyed a win of 10-2 points and 126-58 shots. Meanwhile the Rubies also had a tough game away to Emerald Isle Neptunes, who won the match 8-4 points and 105-65 shots. In the Southern League it was an excellent week for the teams. Quesada Swifts enjoyed not only a good match against the El Rancho Broncos but also a win - unusual on the testing El Rancho

green! The result was Quesada won 8-4 points and 100-76 shots, keeping the Swifts in 2nd place in the league. The Swans also enjoyed an excellent win when they hosted La Manga Crusaders, finishing with all 12 points and 116-48 shots. Finally in this league, Quesada Swallows had a very good win against El Rancho Mustangs with 10-2 points and 111-63 shots. Well done to all 3 teams! In the Winter league, Quesada hosted La Marina and won the match 10-2 points and 98-68 shots, while the Quesada Panthers had a bye this week in the Federated 4’s. Just a reminder that we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk Report by Dee Stephenson

Dear reader, I can only apologise in advance for what you are going to have to read today. I am here, most days, to provide you with a lighter look at the game we love. And I am going to fail you today. I'm getting it out there now. This is one of the worst football weekends of all time for anything vaguely amusing. And I blame the FA Cup and people taking it all too seriously. Funny football news? You'll be lucky. Take Friday night, for example. Now, Friday night football still feels a bit weird to me but with the FA determined to string every single round of this year's tournament over four days, we headed to Loftus Road for the opening tie of the 5th round; QPR against Watford. Not exactly one to get the heartbeat racing, is it? And neither was the game. Javi Gracia is actually doing a half-decent job at Watford, now the owners have decided to trial having a manager in place for more than half-aseason. As nice as it would have been to see Steve McLaren back at Wembley to get through a final 90 Javi Gracia minutes there without a brolly, it wasn't to be. Watford march on until they meet one of the few big sides left in the tournament. All eyes were on Newport on Saturday night. Would the pitch be too much for Man City to take? Could this be the greatest FA Cup shock since the last one? Would we actually get to see the myth that is Phil Foden?

It turned out the answers were no, no and yes.

Fair play to Newport, they made a much better effort than Chelsea. 25 minutes in and the score was still 0-0 and, if anything, Michael Flynn's men could have been ahead if Ederson hadn't performed his own tribute to the late Gordon Banks. Dean Saunders had said before the game that Newport would be better than City at set-pieces and boy, did we laugh? It turns out he was right. But, there was a bit of football to be played in between all the long throws, corners and free-kicks and that is what City are just a little bit better at than their League Two counterparts. Foden scored twice, but Newport kept the score very, very respectable by pulling it back to 2-1 before knocking off early and letting City get two more right at the end. After the game, Pep

Wimbledon and Millwall can both have been a little disappointed not to have been on TV, but having watched the highlights the producers inadvertently managed to get that one spot on. It was a terrible game won by Millwall. It was almost as if dying your beard the club colours wasn't crazy enough for Wimbledon to win the match. Sunday promised little more. Bristol City versus Wolves? Do me a favour. As soon as it was clear that Wolves wanted to win the match by putting out a strong side the game became as dull as everything else that weekend. I spent the hour between the final whistle at Ashton Gate and the simultaneous kickoffs at Doncaster versus Palace and Swansea versus Brentford wondering if I could get away with not writing this column. Sadly not.

Guardiola said that Foden is 'ready to play'. Great! Then do us and English football a favour, eh Pep? Pick the lad once in a while, will you? Ashley Cole has done a lot in life and won a lot in football. However, despite his record seven FA Cup winners medals, he had never scored in the competition. He put that right as a second-half substitute for Derby against Brighton but ended up a 2-1 loser to the Premier League side.

I opted for the game at Doncaster as it is unlikely I'd watch Swansea play Brentford in the Championship so I was not going to fall into the 'well, it's the FA Cup so it might be good' trap. Doncaster didn't look at all likely to cause an upset and it has dawned on me that I'd quite like to see Roy Hodgson win the FA Cup. After all, he is the one Englishman who seems to have Peppy G's number. Oh, Swansea beat Brentford which is at least some good news for the latest club in crisis. This weekend won't be one I remember. Still, at least all this will make the Chelsea match against United feel like a Champions League final, right?

Well, 2-1 is a lot better than 3-0. So they say, anyway. England managed to turn up for long enough to win the Third Test against the Windies in St Lucia. The Test series defeat has certainly raised more questions and if England feel that they’ve now stumbled across a ‘winning formula’ because they managed to stick it to their captainless opponents in a dead rubber, then they need to have an even longer look at themselves. Joe Root and the selectors put all the names in the hat once again and this time all three openers were lucky enough to get drawn out, meaning Keaton Jennings returned and Joe Denly dropped down to

three. Denly got a few runs. Jennings didn’t. And neither did Rory Burns who, until Joe Root got a ton in this match, had the top English score with his 80-odd earlier in the series. The problem is, Burns averages about the same as everyone else we have tried over the last goodness knows how many series. In his six or so Test matches, Burns averages 25. That’s not enough and how long should he get for that number to go up or, more likely, down? Yet, he is still to be considered the best of a bad bunch in terms of proper opening batsman options. Unless we are to go completely maverick in the Ashes and throw in Alex Hales and Jason Roy, Burns will play against Australia. The worrying thing is, Keaton Jennings still might as well. And I am not convinced about Joe Denly,

even if he did get a few this time out. Roy, interestingly, rocked up and smacked a ton in an ODI warmup match on Sunday. An England opener hitting 100. What a novelty.

definitely don’t make him another opening option. If we have to pick him, just give him the gloves and the slot at seven and worry about the rest of the line-up, please. Yes, it is harsh on Ben Foakes who is the better keeper but that’s Test cricket. At least England know they have a class option if Bairstow fails to score.

Bowling wise, Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson did what they do when Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson the conditions are favourable and everyone can now What else did we learn about the get very excited, again, by Mark England bats? Oh, look. Jonny Wood and his extreme pace. Bairstow is best at number seven. Wood wanged down balls in and Not three. Not five. Not six. And

around 95mph and his first innings spell could be what changes the course of his career. If, and it is a big if, he can stay fit and some tracks are favourable in the summer, he could have a major impact on where the Ashes end up. Just in case England felt they were having a great Test match, the subject of their catching came up once again. Jos Buttler, an immensely talented cricketer, clearly needs the gloves on to be able to hold anything. Buttler dropped a couple in quick succession before being sent down to third man as punishment. He seemed almost grateful. The ODIs get underway this week and hopefully, by the end of them, we will still all believe that England can win the World Cup.
