ALICANTE AND TORREVIEJA LEAD THE BUILDING BOOM It might not be on the same level as the pre-2008 construction industry growth, but for the last six years there has been a recovery in the number of houses built and the demand for them. In the Alicante Province it is the city of Alicante itself and Torrevieja that are at the top of the charts when it comes to new homes. Altogether in 2018 7,532 new homes were built in the province which was 17% more than in the

previous year. Of these seven and a half thousand, 1,105 were built in the capital of the province, Alicante city. In second place comes Torrevieja with 873 new homes constructed. This just beats its close rival of Orihuela which came in with 779. Torrevieja’s total is almost 40% above the number of properties built in the town during 2017. A positive increase for those in the construction industry. These figures are similar to those of

2008. Not as great as those of the bubble years but still an improvement on the years that immediately followed the crisis. The figures come from the Colegio Oficial de Aparejadores and Arquitectos Técnicos in Alicante. So who is buying? Most interest continues to come from tourists and most of these are foreigners. The coast is

still a favourite place to buy and although we are seeing some increases in prices, overall they still compare favourably with other countries. The available building land in Torrevieja may be almost exhausted but for now, at least, it is still attracting the second home market. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE The differences NEWS: start to show The May Fair will be celebrated this year in Torrevieja from 8th to 12th of May. The councillor for fiestas, Domingo Pérez, has announced that the registration period for those wishing to have their own marquee there will be from 25th February. The Feria de Sevillanas, or May Fair, is one of the most colourful and vibrant occasions in the festival calendar. The number of marquees is limited, with only 23 being allowed in total. They are used by different associations and during the week’s events the public can eat there and watch flamenco. There are also different shows and displays of flamenco on the main stage. Friday and Saturday night, in particular, are busy and you can watch a variety of performances by local dance schools. The week opens on the evening of 7th May with the traditional ‘Noche del Pascaito’. Now the local government is encouraging the town’s restaurants and other establishments to get involved and reserve their places for this spectacular fiesta.

Rodríguez and Carmen Morate are from Los Verdes (The Green Party). Councillors Fanny Serrano, Domingo Pérez, Fabiana Lidón, Javier Manzanares belong to the PSOE. Councillor Domingo Soler represents APTCe and Councillor Víctor Ferrández, IU. It was never going to be easy, bringing together five different parties in local government. However, since the last local elections in May 2015, in spite of the loss of the two councillors from Sueña, the four-party coalition government has managed to stay together. In most cases it has been able to present a relatively unified picture. However, the differences are starting

Ciudadanos, who are officially in opposition. This could cause difficulties in the remaining months to come. Some of these are already being reported in the Spanish press and for the town, as well as individual councillors, could have negative side effects. Usually in the run up to an election, the ruling party is keen to put its best face forward and ensure that they are perceived positively. This will be difficult for the four party coalition to achieve given that they are campaigning against each other whilst also still in office as a coalition. Suzanne O’Connell

Torrevieja Technology In conjunction with the University of Alicante, the councillor for youth, Victor Ferrández, has announced a day of innovation to be held in the Palacio de los Deportes de Torrevieja on Friday 1st March between 10am and 8pm. There will be a total of 30 stands at the event run by different organisations and universities demonstrating a variety of types of technology. There will be lots to see including robotic demonstrations and virtual reality displays, an exhibition of drones and a demonstration surrounding the development of video games. Different associations will be involved in demonstrating the technology they use. One aim of the exhibition is to promote the option of a career in technology to the young women and girls at school in Torrevieja. There will be a stand dedicated to ‘I want to be an engineer’, encouraging more women to take up science, engineering and technology. It is free to enter and there will be transport available for those attending from the different schools. It is expected that around 1,000 people will attend the event in total.

It had been a spectacular weekend’s weather and Sunday’s carnival in Torrevieja was watched by thousands of people enjoying the last of the warm winter sunlight. The carnival began at 5pm, setting off from Plaza María Asunción along its long route down calle Ramon Gallud. Altogether 30 comparsas (dance groups) took part, each with their distinctive theme and the costumes and headware were outstanding. This was the first of two important processions through the town, the second to follow on Saturday 2nd March will begin at 7.30 pm. It’s a long stretch of road and those taking a ring-side seat could expect to be watching the procession for around two hours. There were plenty of traditional comparsas to watch with feathered headdresses, body stockings and high heels. But there were also eight children’s comparsas of pandas, toy story characters, majorettes and little soldiers. Some comparsas had rather unusual titles such as carne de cañón (cannon fodder) from Payas. The costumes and themes showed the great creativity there is out there. Looking closely you could see the detail that had gone into each of the outfits with plenty of sequins, feathers and glitter. There was an enormous range of subjects taken and each one carried out to the smallest detail.

Alicante food fair From 22nd to 25th February Torrevieja participated with its own stand in the Alicante Food fair. Councillor Fanny Serrano and other representatives of the food industry in Torrevieja promoted the town with cooking demonstrations, competitions, sales of branded products and, of course, promotion of the salt industry of Las Salinas. A number of different restaurants in the town were also represented including Huertano, Nautilus, Luz de Mar, Las Columnas and Las Lagunas restaurants. Meals were offered during the event with the aim being to promote local cuisine. This is the second time that this particular fair has taken place and although figures aren’t in yet, it was hoped to build on the 20,000 people who attended last year.

Prizes for Habaneras In a press release the vice president of the Habaneras association, Domingo Soler, challenged those who have distributed information claiming that prizes for the 64th Habaneras competition have not yet been paid. In an announcement he explained that there can be difficulties when choirs are based in other countries in sorting out the transfer arrangements. In some cases, this can lead to delays as the initial information, including bank account details, that was provided when the choirs signed up may not match those provided later. This can take some time then to rectify. This is not the first time that a delay in payment has been the result of these kinds of circumstances. Domingo Soler expressed disappointment that reports have been circulated of the council failing to pay.

Paya’s kids have an oriental theme

It is an amazing feat to keep on dancing for over two hours in these incredible costumes and in what became a chilly February evening. However, most of those taking part managed to do just that, and with a smile. The carnival in Torrevieja has grown over the years both in size and presentation. It has now become a major event in Torrevieja’s calendar and has been declared of Provincial Tourist interest. Suzanne O’Connell

Avenida de Tenerife tidy up Tons of debris and equipment were removed from the Avenida de Tenerife in Torrevieja on the instruction of José Manuel Dolón. The area is next to the Secondary School Number 4 and the rubbish that has accumulated over the last two years has become both an eye sore and cause of concern. People have been fly tipping in the area and the absence of houses on this stretch of road has meant that individuals and businesses have used it as their own private rubbish dump. The area should have been landscaped by the construction company responsible for urbanisations in the area, but the work was never completed. However, the presence of the school has pushed the government into taking responsibility for it and overseeing the clear up.

Suzanne O’Connell

Approximately €1,200 of goods were stolen from the GAEX charity base in calle Diego Ramírez in Torrevieja on 18th February. GAEX stands for Grupo de Amigos Exadictos and they provide voluntary support for those who are recovering from or suffer from an addiction. The robbery was discovered in the morning when volunteers arrived at the office to begin their work. The person responsible for opening up could see that the door had been forced and immediately contacted the president of the association, Damián García. When the president arrived and they entered the premises they discovered that it had been turned over and the office door had been forced open too. They had taken the computer, the printer, office

material and a quantity of money that was to be used to provide workshops to help people stop smoking. The estimated value of the goods stolen is €1,200. The association has now made a denuncia to the Guardia Civil who are now investigating. There has been outrage from the members of the association that anyone can stoop so low as to rob a charity which over a period of ten years has helped more than 200 families counter the addiction of one of their members. They currently continue to provide intense support to 20 or more families in addition to providing recreational and sporting programmes as well as leading a campaign to help people stop smoking. Businesses at risk of theft Statistics released by the insurers Unespa suggest that businesses in Torrevieja are more vulnerable to theft than in other parts of Alicante province. Unespa has analysed almost 16,000 of the 52,000 claims they received from companies across Spain. They compared them with the total number of companies that have an insurance policy. Their analysis found that businesses in Torrevieja were 18% more likely to suffer a robbery than the Spanish national average. This compared to 2% for businesses located in Alicante City with Elche coming in at 45% below the average. Elche is in fact the third safest town in the country for businesses to locate to. Concerns from the business community were expressed at the end of last year when there were two attacks on shop workers in November.

Bye gum! Rojales town hall is saying ‘bye gum’ – goodbye to chewing gum, that is. Last week saw the installation of a series of special chewing gum bins around the town. The Gumy bins, eye-catching in bubblegum pink, aim to discourage residents from discarding chewing gum being on the ground which causes unsightly marks.

One of these included a shop assistant being stabbed and subsequently taken to hospital. Apymeco, the association for small and mediumsized shops and businesses, has added its voice to appeals for greater security in the town centre. It is thought that many of the robberies are opportunist and are more likely to happen in a tourist area. Incidents of breaking and entering of businesses at night are not as frequent and where they do occur there is usually little taken. The exception perhaps being where a jewellery store is broken into or, more recently, phone shops. Unespa found that the average amount claimed by those suffering a burglary across Spain was €1,314. This is a relatively low figure which reflects that insurance companies will only pay out for what can be proved to have been stolen. Again, there are

differences here across the province. In Orihuela that average cost per claim for the insurers was €1,754 whereas in Torrevieja it was €1,222. Overall, Alicante Province’s record for this kind of crime is below the Spanish average. Unespa found that the area most likely to suffer from a robbery was Seville where companies are 62.5% more likely to experience some type of theft. This was followed by Guadalajara (48.3%), Madrid (35.9%), Toledo (34.9%) and Cadiz (29%). Although the above average rate of claims for Torrevieja might be a consideration, theft and robbery is not what worries businesses the most. The presence of street sellers and competition in the form of irregular and illegal trade remains high on their list of concerns. Suzanne O’Connell

Is there any hope for El Tintero? The restaurant El Tintero, perched off the end of el paseo maritimo, is at risk. The Coastal Department has ordered that the premises be closed down and the platform that the restaurant stands on be demolished. However, there is strong opposition to this from the town council and the public. Particularly unusual is the fact that councillors from all the local political parties are for once united in agreeing that the popular local landmark must stay. The seven parties have rarely agreed on anything since the last local elections saw a coalition government and the PP forced into opposition. However, their united stand may not be enough to save El Tintero. The concession allowing the continuation of the restaurant ended in 2011 and since then the owners have fought to have it renewed. They have already been arguing for over eight years with the government that the restaurant should remain trading. They have taken it to the National Court, the Superior Court and the Supreme Court only to be told that an extension of the permission cannot be granted and that they must close. The only remaining legal alternative is to appeal against the demolition order. The town council has already committed to supporting the request of the owners to remain open. The restaurant separates the Playa del Cura and the Paseo de Las Rocas and has been there for 80 years. It is considered to be of historical significance and part of the heritage of the town. As such, Councillor Fanny Serrano is attempting to have the landmark added to the list of premises that should be protected. This followed a report that identified the building as an important part of Torrevieja’s tourism appeal. It is hoped that El Tintero can be included in the

Locally Relevant Property list and possibly save it from being destroyed. However, following a request from the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, the legal situation was clarified and it does not look good. The restaurant had been granted a concession to open in 1969 and this expired in 2011. Subsequently a succession of appeals to the decision against the restaurant continued in 2013, 2014, 2016 and finally in 2017 at the Supreme Court. The fight is not over yet. The mayor continues to hope that the modification of the town council plan (PGOU) and its listings could help to protect the building. However, at the moment, it is not looking too hopeful and Torrevieja could soon see this familiar extension of the promenade lost for good. Suzanne O’Connell

Terrace bars and restaurants have no licences It is estimated that around eight hundred catering businesses do not currently hold a licence for their terraces. This number was given by a police officer belonging to the Public Highway Department of Torrevieja (area de VíaPública) during a court case. Bars and restaurants should not automatically spread out onto streets and pavements. They must request permission, pay a fee and be granted a licence to do so. However, this requirement has apparently not stopped hundreds of catering establishments in Torrevieja from deciding to spread their premises outside without possessing the necessary paperwork. It is now being claimed that none of the approximately 800 premises which have outdoor terraces actually have the licence. This statistic emerged during the court case in which the town hall stands accused of failing to sanction a bar without a licence. The owners had allegedly removed a bench, palm tree and bollards in order to put chairs and tables on the sea front. Something that is clearly not allowed without permission. The police officer who made the claim is stated as saying that there are insufficient people assigned to this type of work in his department. A written order was issued to this particular bar owner but it was not this department’s responsibility to follow up any breach or apply a sanction. For this local police officer, the job of monitoring the hundreds of terraces, particularly during the summer

Bars and restaurants should not automatically spread out onto streets and pavements

months is an impossible one. The current procedure for bars and restaurants that do want to spread out into a terrace includes that the proprietor must first ask if they can set up on the street or pavement. The town hall then asks for information about the surface area being requested and those requesting permission must send this as part of a project. They need to demonstrate that the business has an opening licence and a fee must be paid. However, the issuing of a licence is not routinely done. Neither is the additional space occupied checked except in cases where there are traffic problems or other difficulties within the neighbourhood.

There appears to be some confusion as to how much of this kind of work can be delegated and the relationship between the town council and the área de VíaPública is indistinct. The departamento de VíaPública collects around two million euros in fees each year. However, it does not generally process licences or carry out sanctions. Although in the past few years they have on occasions confiscated chairs and tables where a fee has not been paid. The bar against which the complaint was made is apparently still trading with its terrace intact. Photo: Mathew Schwartz Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE Despite political upheaval in the UK causing headlines, the pound had a much better week than it has known in recent times. At the end of last week, UK retail sales were shown to have increased by a monthly 0.2% and an annual 3.4% and this gave the pound some assistance; after the news was released sterling strengthened by an average of 0.5%, adding three quarters of a euro cent and one US cent. The resignation of eight Labour MPs added a new layer of uncertainty to the Brexit situation and this was compounded when three Conservative MPs quit their party to join the newly formed Independent Group. Brexit, and opposition to a nodeal scenario, appears to be a major factor in the split and the guiding principle that unites them. However, despite this new wrinkle in the political fabric of the UK, positive rumours around progress in Brexit negotiations assisted the pound this week. Despite European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker trying to manage expectations, saying he doesn’t expect the promised breakthrough, the pound continued to rise at the hope of one. Investors did not care. There was a rumour to trade and, true or not, it was taking the pound higher. Sterling added two yen, one and a half US cents, one Swiss cent and one euro cent. Its smallest gains were of 0.5% each against the Australian dollar and South African

rand and there were no losses. The pound is an average of 2.3% above its levels at the beginning of the year. Later in the week there was some scepticism over the promised breakthrough over the backstop and that put paid to the pound’s rise, but it held steady. Comments from Chancellor Phillip Hammond that the breakthrough was on the horizon was seized upon by the market and proved positive for sterling. The slowing economy was the focus of the European Central Bank this week. Italian industrial orders and sales showed monthly declines of 1.8% and 3.5%. ZEW's surveys showed economic sentiment improving in Germany and Euroland but both readings were still negative. There are signs that the slowdown may justify further stimulus, in the form of cash injections by the ECB or an extension to the period of ultra-low interest rates. Speaking in New York the European Central Bank's Benoît Coeuré said the bank is considering another round of targeted longerterm refinancing operations (TeLTROs). He linked the idea to reduced upward pressure on inflation and an economic slowdown that will be "stronger and broader" than expected. This may provide some assistance to the euro, which has been struggling to gain a foothold in recent months.

Punta Margalla improvements cause controversy A subcontractor working on the restoration of the paseo Punta Margalla has come in for criticism by a local property owner. The contractor is said to be dumping and stockpiling materials used in the building work on private land nearby, apparently without permission. The owners of the private property on Cala del Palangre have now made the denuncia to the Guardia Civil. They have also raised the issue of the street being closed in order to enable trucks and lorries to put the building material there. It is claimed that over half the area of private land, 1,500 square meters in total, is covered by materials linked to the work on the paseo. Many people will be pleased to see that the paseo or promenade is now being improved. The work began on February 1st but it is only now that heavy machinery has been brought in to remove the large quantity of debris caused by the removal of the balustrades and pavement. The renovation of the area is being paid for through a mixture of provincial and local government funds. It has been anticipated since 2012 but has suffered from delays due to

disagreements over funding. Altogether the project is believed to be costing one million euros, some of which is set aside for the removal and management of the waste that is generated. Using land close to where the work is being carried out reduces the amount spent on this aspect of the building work. Concern about the use of the private land during the remodelling project has also been fuelled because it contains a protected building named on the town’s PGOU plan from 1987. It is claimed that some of the rubble being deposited on this area of land is resting up against this building which is a relic from the early twentieth century tourist trade. It is believed that the subcontractor may have thought that the land they have used belongs to the town hall. The town hall has held employment workshopshere in the past. There have also been plans to make this plot part of the town hall premises, developing its setting as a large park overlooking the sea. This plan was put forward in 2011 by the mayor at the time, Pedro Hernández Mateo. Soon after he was no longer in office and was given a prison sentence for corruption. Suzanne O’Connell

Seagate Wealth Management

Keeping it local M

any people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of supervision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but on‐going support and monitoring of the investments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental principles: the strength of the relationship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meetings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up to date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are performing. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control.

If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transfer ring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

Spanish military craft orders British ships out of Gibraltar

A fresh incident in the bilateral tug-of-war over Gibraltar sparked fury among the Rock’s government recently, when Spanish Naval officers ordered British trade ships to leave the port. Although Spain recognises – reluctantly – that the Rock of Gibraltar is under British rule, it continues to consider the waters off its coast to be Spanish, even though the United Nations dictates that the seas three miles from the shore belong to the same government as the land itself. Spanish crafts have made incursions into British waters off Gibraltar in the past, making international headlines, and disputes over marine rights of way are

relatively common. This time, a military ship’s radio conversation with UK commercial boats reveals the former told the latter to ‘leave Spanish territorial waters’. The British crew member is recorded as responding that the trade ships were ‘not adrift’, but anchored in the port, and asking the Spanish craft to ‘verify you are referring to our vessel’. In reply, the Spanish crew repeated its order for the British vessels to leave, but the Gibraltarian port authority instructed them to stay put. Gibraltar’s government rarely minces its words when disputes of this nature arise, and this was no exception.

It called the Spanish crew’s actions ‘foolish games’ with ‘only nuisance value’, and were the work of ‘those who don’t accept unimpeachable British sovereignty’ over the Rock’s waters ‘as recognised by the whole world in the United Nations Convention on the law of the sea’. The British Royal Navy base in Gibraltar sent out two crafts to the scene, and the force reported that the Spanish warship, after being ‘challenged’ by the UK military crew, ‘sailed slowly along the… coast with its weapons uncovered and unmanned’. Gibraltar’s government has announced it will be taking further action.

WELCOME TO SAMARKAND with Vivalia Travel Samarkand is a cultural treasury of the peoples of the East, with medieval architectural monuments unique in beauty and architectural forms, extant up to date

Samarkand is a cultural treasury of the peoples of the East, with medieval architectural monuments unique in beauty and architectural forms, extant up to date. Modern Samarkand differs much from its medieval image: the city has changed but the domes, towers, and magnificent building arches decorated with mosaic patterns are still sparkling in the sun and drawing the eyes. The Samarkand sights and monuments, rightly included into the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, like pages of an old book, narrate the history of establishment and development of Samarkand – the city-crossroad of cultures. The Samarkand symbol, the image of which can be met more often in post cards and booklets, is Registan Square with three madrasahs of Ulugbek, Sherdor and TillyaKori situated on it. This historical place embodies the highest achievement of the architects of the ХV-XVII centuries, which is inseparably connected with the names of outstanding figures of the East. Several centuries before the time, when Shah Jahan built famous Tadj Mahal in Agra in honor of his beloved, Samarkand had already the Bibi-Khanum mosque built – monumental building, devoted by Amir Timur to his beloved wife. The Bibi-Khanym mosque was built on a large scale, its sizes and specific architecture cannot but catch the imagination. Its dome was compared with the vault of heaven, while the portal arch -

with the Milky Way. Not far from Bibi-Khanym mosque there is Shahi-Zinda complex, sprang up next to a densely populated residential quarter, in course of time it snowballed, squeezing up the adjoining community. Another important Samarkand sight is Gur-Emir Mausoleum, the luxurious Timurid shrine, where Amir Timur, the dynasty founder himself, rests too. Visit also the mysterious Prophet Daniel Mausoleum, the place being the subject of numerous hypotheses and legends over many years.

Popular Monuments and Landmarks of Samarkand

Registan Square ranks among the world’s most beautiful squares, it is called the pearl of Central Asia. The square won this fame owing to unique monuments of medieval architecture, surrounding it from three sides, as a part of beautiful architectural ensemble: the Ulugbek madrasah (1417-1420), Sherdor Madrasah (1619-1636) and Tillya-Kari Madrasah (16461647). The Gur-Emir Mausoleum, the family vault of Amir Timur and his heirs, was built in 1404 in the south-western part of the city. This mausoleum was a prototype for two well-known monuments of world architecture: the Humayun Mausoleum in Delhi and the Tadj Mahal in Agra. Rukhabad Mausoleum, built over the tomb of Muslim mystic sheikh Burkhaneddin Sagaradji, who died in the XIV century and was deeply esteemed by Timur’s contemporaries, is found to the

north from the Gur-Emir shrine. Bibi-Khanym Mosque is a cathedral mosque which according to a legend was named after Amir Timur’s beloved wife. Majestic blue domes of the Bibi-Khanym Mosque are a striking sight. The Shakhi-Zinda Complex, one of Samarkand most mysterious and inimitable architectural monuments, is located not far from the BibiKhanym Mosque. The complex is a unique ensemble consisting of eleven shrines. Ancient site of Afrasiab (VII-II centuries BC) is located on high hills at the entrance to Samarkand from the north. Interestingly enough, but Afrasiab town, as such, did not exist at that place at all. The locals named this place according to a legend that once there existed a huge city founded by mythical Turan tsar Afrasiab. In fact, this ancient site belongs to Samarkand of the pre-Mongolian period. The Prophet Daniel Mausoleum is located in Afrasiab suburbs. The mausoleum long 5-domed building stretches along a high steep hill, with the Siab River flowing at its foot. The Ulugbek Observatory was built on Kukhak hill in Samarkand suburb in 1424— 1428, it went down in history as one of the most important observatories of the Middle Ages. “Hudjum” is a silk carpet factory where it is possible to watch Samarkand carpet weaving process on site, to enjoy unique examples of carpet products.

Ex-PM Rajoy to testify today in Catalan separatists’ trial S

pain’s former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was in power when Catalonia’s executive tried to secede in 2017, will testify in the highprofile trial of separatist leaders on 26th February. In a statement, the court said other witnesses who will testify next week include Catalonia’s former president Artur Mas and Spain’s former deputy prime minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria. Inigo Urkullu, the president of the Basque Country who acted as a mediator during the crisis in October 2017, will also appear in court next week. The 12 defendants continue to be questioned at Madrid’s Supreme Court in a trial for rebellion and other offences that takes place under intense domestic and

foreign scrutiny. They are being tried for pushing an independence referendum in October 2017 in defiance of a court ban, and for a subsequent short-lived declaration of independence on 27th October. That prompted Rajoy’s government to sack the Catalan executive, dissolve the regional parliament, impose direct rule on the semiautonomous region and call snap local elections. Several days later, Catalonia’s then leader Carles Puigdemont fled Spain for Belgium along with several other colleagues. As such, the main defendant in the trial is Oriol Junqueras, Puigdemont’s then deputy, as Spain does not judge people in absentia for major offences. Accused of rebellion and misuse of public funds, Junqueras faces up to 25 years in jail. Former regional government spokesman Jordi Turull took the stand last week, defending his acts and that of his colleagues. “It’s totally normally to try and do what you promised to citizens of Catalonia in a peaceful and democratic manner,” he told the seven judges at the Supreme Court. The independence bid sparked Spain’s deepest political crisis since the transition to democracy in the 1970s after the death of dictator Francisco Franco. Independence supporters and the defendants’ lawyers maintain they are on trial for their ideas and for political dissidence. Prosecutors, though, insist the separatist leaders and activists are being tried for their actions and not for what they think.

Owner of Julen Roselló well is named suspect The judge investigating the death of two-year-old Julen Roselló, who fell to his death down a 110-meter borehole in Totalán, in the southern Spanish province of Málaga, has formally named the owner of the rural property where the toddler fell as a suspect. This comes shortly after prosecutors in Málaga asked for David Serrano to be investigated for involuntary manslaughter. Serrano’s defence lawyer Antonio Flores confirmed his client had been formally named as a suspect. This development means that the public prosecution has ruled out, for now, the possibility that other people were criminally responsible for Julen’s death. Julen fell down the borehole on Sunday, 13th January, during a family lunch, and his body was recovered 13 days later thanks to an unprecedented rescue operation involving more than 300 people. A Málaga courtroom opened an investigation into the incident to determine whether negligence was involved. According to judicial sources, 12 witnesses will testify in the case, including Antonio Sánchez, the head of Perforaciones Triben, the company that made the borehole; Julen’s parents, José Roselló and Victoria García; four Civil Guard officers; and the hikers who arrived on the scene just after the accident happened and called emergency services. Serrano has denied any wrongdoing and his lawyers have shifted the blame to Sánchez, who drilled the 110-meter

borehole. “The person who ordered the work was named as a suspect but not the person who did it,” said Flores. “We don’t understand.” At a press conference in early

with Julen and it could have been her. I will never forgive myself,” he said, sobbing as he read out his statement. Serrano’s version of events contradicts the one provided by

whether there was any underground water that could be used for the fruit trees. The property owner recognized that he did not have the necessary permits

Sánchez. The head of Triben Perforations told the Civil Guard that he covered the borehole once it was completed “like I always do.” He clarified that he had placed a huge rock over the hole to prevent any accidents but said this was later moved. Serrano explained that he had flattened a section of land on his property in order to grow avocados and had ordered the borehole to see

to complete this work but trusted that Sánchez had permission to dig the borehole. Serrano paid €12 for every meter of the borehole, which would have been raised to €27 per meter had water been found. “I paid him the money. He didn’t give me a receipt or anything and he left with the machine, leaving the borehole open and a mountain of sand next to it like a volcano at the foot of an uneven slope,” said Serrano.

David Serrano

February, Serrano said that he had covered the hole with two concrete blocks at 1pm on January 13 – just minutes before the toddler fell down the shaft. Serrano also maintained that he had warned people in the area about the hole. “I thought someone’s foot could slip in and break, but I never thought a child would fit,” he said. According to Serrano, Julen “slipped” through the blocks and fell. “I have a two-year-old girl who played

Legal defence At the press conference, Juan Martínez, who is representing Serrano together with Antonio Flores, said that their defence would centre on the fact that the borehole lacked the necessary permits and documentation, meaning it was illegal. The lawyers said that it is impossible to predict or prevent an accident like Julen’s “because it is without precedent in the world,” and disagreed that Serrano is responsible for involuntary manslaughter. “David could never have been aware of the risk, no one could have seen it as a real possibility. Even the Civil Guard thought the child wasn’t there because he couldn’t have fit,” the lawyers said. Civil Guard spokespersons explained on numerous occasions that whatever doubts there may have been at the beginning were ruled out once they spoke with Julen’s parents, who explained how they saw the two-yearold fall. Serrano’s lawyers added that 800 children die from domestic accidents each year and that in these cases there is no accusation of “involuntary manslaughter, even though they are foreseeable things that could have been prevented.” The lawyers said they want the case to be shelved, arguing they don’t agree with the idea that “someone has to be guilty.” But, they added, if the investigation finds any “criminal responsibility” it should be placed on Sánchez for drilling the illegal borehole

Spanish citizenship tests for reading and writing Taking Spanish nationality normally involves a language exam and a multiple-choice test on Constitution, culture and society to show ‘integration’, and both are relatively simple: only 15 correct answers out of a total of 25 are needed to pass the

latter, and the former is set at level A2 – a good elementary or lower preintermediate standard, about the equivalent of GCSE-level Spanish. But what about foreign nationals in Spain who cannot read or write? The ministry of justice has announced a rethink of requirements for applicants who, through no fault of their own, would be incapable of taking the exams. These may include residents who have only had minimal, or no schooling, and are illiterate, but who

otherwise speak and understand Spanish; it also covers those who are very severely dyslexic and would not be able to cope with the written or reading comprehension elements. Additionally, people with learning disabilities or other cognitive

limitations, such as Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, would be fazed by written exams – as would the blind, whilst the deaf would struggle with the oral and listening elements of the language test. Mindful of its legal and moral obligations to avoid discrimination against applicants on the grounds of disabilities, Spain has launched a public consultation to debate how those who are unable to take written tests would be able to show their level of the language and of their

integration in Spanish society. One proposal already made is that any foreign national seeking to ‘become Spanish’ and who has been through Spain’s school system would automatically be exempt from the language and culture tests as long as they had passed their compulsory secondary school education in the country – the ESO, which is the equivalent of GCSEs. Anyone born in Spain, married to a Spaniard or with a Spanish parent or grandparent only has to show a year’s residence in the country to be able to apply for nationality, and anyone from a former Spanish colony – the Hispanic countries in the Americas, the Philippines or Equatorial Guinea in west Africa – or from the neighbouring nations of Portugal or Andorra have to be resident for two years. Those who can prove they are directly descended from one of the Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in the 14th century automatically qualifies, resident or not. Asylum-seekers granted refugee status will be eligible to apply for nationality after five years’ residence, and everyone else must have lived in Spain continuously for a minimum of 10 years. The most recent period for which statistics are available is the year 2017, when around 26,000 Spanish nationality certificates were issued based upon residence – much lower than in previous years, such as the 94,000 in 2016 and 78,000 in 2015, most of which were granted to expats of Latin American origin.

But Brexit could see an upsurge in the number of British expats in Spain applying for citizenship.

Costly The process is not cheap, and is paperintensive – the applicant needs to present his or her passport, birth certificate and copy of police records from his or her country of origin showing a clean record, complete with sworn translations into Spanish, and paperwork proving that he or she meets one or more of the requirements for citizenship, such as residence or marriage. Also, the applicant must present a receipt showing the fee for starting the process – currently €102 – has been duly paid at a bank branch or cashpoint.

The language test, which takes the best part of a day or sometimes two days, costs €124 and, if the applicant fails, this has to be paid again, although the culture, Constitution and society test, which costs €85, can be retaken without charge. Forms have to be filled in, but can be filed online to save time. Guidelines dictate that applications should be handled and a response given within 12 months, but much longer waits are not unheard-of. After a year, if no reply has been given, the applicant can apply to the National Court, but this involves a lawyer and case fees. In total, taking Spanish citizenship could cost around €300 to €400, or up to around €1,000 if a late response leads to a court case.

Arrests in Spain for animal abuse rose in 2018 In 2018, Spain’s Civil Guard’s nature protection service Seprona investigated or arrested 590 people for animal abuse against both wild and domestic animals. According to Seprona, 854 criminal offences were recorded. During last year, Seprona investigated 10,920 offenses related to injuries against domestic animals. This does not include the 1,731 reports concerning potentially dangerous dog breeds. The agency also addressed 3,974 complaints regarding owners keeping wild animals as pets. Seprona investigated dog kennels and animal exploitation at farms and zoos on more than 200 occasions. The agency recorded 11,277 reports of animal abuse in 2017 – more than the figure for 2018. Last year, however, the number of people investigated rose by 1 percent while the number of people arrested or charged jumped by 20 percent on figures from 2017. In the last three years, Seprona has taken action in 50,000 situations involving all types of attacks against wild and domestic animals. In 2018, 10 percent of the Civil Guard’s activities in defence of the environment were related to animal injuries or deaths. In Galicia, Seprona is currently investigating the brutal killing of four wild horses, which were corralled into a de-worming corridor and beaten to death.

Eleven hidden villages most beautiful in Spain

Travellers who’ve already made their way through Spanish cities such as Barcelona, Seville and Madrid can now consider a trip to some of the most beautiful villages around the country. Eleven new villages have been added to the list of the most beautiful in Spain. The list, created by the Asociación Los Pueblos Más Bonitos De España (Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain), officially accredits towns around the country.

With 79 towns in total, the accreditation is designed to celebrate villages and bring awareness to some of the more beautiful but under-visited spots. The new towns that have been added for 2019 are: Bonilla de la Sierra in Ávila; Níjar in Almería; Roda de Isábena in Huesca; Bagergue in Lleida; Potes in Cantabria; Tazones in Asturias; Carmona in Cantabria; San Martín de Trevejo in Cáceres; Viniegra de Arriba in La Rioja; Viniegra de Abajo in La Rioja; and Setenil de las Bodegas in Cádiz. Spread throughout the diverse country, the villages are picturesque spots with plenty to offer visitors. Setenil de las Bodegas is a white town burrowed into the caves under the cliffs of the Río Trejo; many of the original cave-houses still remain, and have even been turned into bars and restaurants. Bagergue has a population of less than 120 people, but has a main church of Roman origin and buildings from the 13th century. Part of the project is designed to support rural Spain and helping regions recover their populations. While beaches and major cities tend to be the backbone of Spanish tourism, the project also helps to show travellers attractions beyond the shoreline, helping create sustainable tourism around the country.

Understanding the paperwork required to sell your home Rebecca Serwotka

I

s it easy to sell a home in Spain? Is it complicated? How will I understand the paperwork? Not to worry my home-selling friends, I’ve got you covered! First of all,if you don’t speak Spanish, don’t panic! All you need to understand is, what paperwork will be required. And I’ve prepared a brief overview of what you’ll need. 1. The Escritura – These are the Title Deeds. The wording you’re actually looking for is “Escritura De Compraventa.” Translation: Title Deeds of purchase/sale. You may come across other documents amongst your paperwork that look very similar to the Escritura, but may have the wording “Poder” or “Testamento.” The “Poder” is a Power Of Attorney (you may have given someone authorization to sign for the property on your behalf ), and “Testamento” will be your Will (Testament). If you can’t find your “Escritura” don’t panic! You can always go back to the Notary where you signed and request a duplicate. On some occasions, you can even sell with just a Land Registry Search.

2. N.I.E. Certificate/Residencia. (Numero Identificacion Extranjeros) Translation: Foreign Identification number. This is your Spanish Tax Number. 3. Cedula De Habitabilidad. Translation: Habitation Certificate. This is obtained from your local Town Hall, through an Architect. 4. Certificado Energetico. Translation: Energy Certificate. This is the equivalent of an E.P.C. in the U.K. This too is obtained from an Architect. 5. Latest Utility Receipts: Water, Electric, Gas, Community Fees. 6. Latest Suma receipt. This is the equivalent of the Council Tax. 7. Original Passport, (not a photocopy) as proof of identity. As long as you can find your paperwork, the process is not difficult. The beauty about being in Spain is, if you can’t find your relevant papers, you can always request a duplicate! Selling? Enjoy the journey! Buying a property? Bingeworthy Box Sets Homecoming

Homecoming is not a show to watch with any other distractions. Put your phone away. Leave your chores for later. It demands complete attention. Not because the plot is hard to follow, but because so much of its storytelling is in the visuals. It doles out its story at a slow pace, yet

the peculiar mood it creates is riveting. Based on a podcast of the same name, Homecoming is split across two timelines. In the first, we venture into the definitely-notwhat-it-seems Homecoming facility, which helps soldiers prepare for a return to civilian life after completing their service. Heidi Bachman (Julia Roberts) is a caseworker who interviews the soldiers to discuss their issues and monitor their progress. The facility is dingy and odd. One worker hosts a weirdly intense class on how to interview for a job in a shoe shop. Nobody ever goes outside. It doesn’t seem right. In the second timeline, four years in the future, Heidi is working in a diner. She is clearly long gone from Homecoming, but a government agent (Shea Whigham) brings her past back to her when he begins investigating why she left the company under strange circumstances and what was really going on inside those walls.

While the fact this is Roberts’ first lead in a TV show is the obvious big news here, this isn’t just a showcase for an A-lister. Hers is one of the quieter roles. Heidi is a dowdy,

uncertain woman who gradually grows in forcefulness over the ten episodes. Roberts keeps her star wattage dimmed — there are no bursts of that famous laugh — and takes her place in a superb ensemble, which includes Bobby Cannavale as Homecoming’s obnoxious boss, Stephan James as a soldier Heidi becomes close to and

Marianne Jean-Baptiste as that soldier’s mother.

Homecoming is a slowburner that is worth the time. Sam Esmail, who created Mr. Robot, has clearly carefully considered every single frame of the show. It is

wildly stylish, but not precious about it. Most of the show is constructed of two-way conversations, which Esmail frames in skewed, disorientating ways, making the actors look small and vulnerable in big Kubrickian wideshots or completely exposed in extreme close-up. There’s no softness or comfort to any of it. Paired with a Hitchcock-esque score, every minute makes you feel unsettled, as if at least one person is lying to you at all times, which they usually are.

Can’t stop worrying

At my wit’s end

I am 84, and I lie awake at night worrying over my grown up children, who don‘t get along. I want so much to switch off and get some sleep. I speak to my daughter and son weekly on the telephone, but also dread the phone call because they lay their problems at my door and expect me to sort them out.

My teenage son is threatening to denounce me to the Police for confiscating his mobile phone, and his Ipad. He threatens me and also says that ‘kids can go and hang themselves if they want to!’. I feel I am out of control, being held to ransom and am no longer able to parent my child effectively.

Firstly, let me point out to you that these aren’t your problems, they are your children’s problems, however I realise you will always be their Mum even though they are grown. But at your age, you should now be having some peace, and they should not burden you with their

squabbles. Perhaps if they knew you lie awake at night worrying? And lying there in dark, wide awake makes your problems seem ten times worse. Try and distract yourself when you can’t sleep. Put a bedside lamp on, and read, or put the television on if you won’t disturb anyone else. Finally, I know someone who gets up and does the ironing until she’s suitably tired.

I would check with the local Police to see if children reporting this type of thing is even possible. If it is, this does not actually help a parent discipline their child. Parenting is a difficult enough task at any time. I wonder if a different tack might not be better employed. I assume you are paying for the phone contract and internet? You could try telling your son, that if he wants to continue using his phone, etc he has to pay for it himself. This will at least teach him responsibility, and encourage a part time job. Finally if you can, try a digital detox for the whole family. We have a lovely outdoor life here in Spain, and this would benefit everyone, and get your son away from social media for a while.

SPANISH GOVERMENT SET TO APPROVE FRANCO EXHUMATION

The Spanish government is planning on approving an agreement that would give the final green light for the exhumation of the body of dictator Francisco Franco from the controversial Valley of the Fallen monument, located northwest of Madrid. The agreement outlines that the government has the “legal mandate” to remove the dictator’s tomb from a place of worship. Once approved, the Franco family will have 15 days to choose an alternative resting place for the dictator. Spain’s National Heritage Trust, the state agency that administers properties belonging to Spain and the Spanish royal family, has a plan to complete the exhumation in a few hours, with “minor”

work costing less than €3,800. The Cabinet’s decision will bring to a head a lengthy process that has caused a number of headaches for the Socialist Party (PSOE) government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Although Spain’s Congress approved a decree to allow the exhumation on 24 August, the process has been delayed by several months due to opposition by Franco’s family, foundations associated with the dictator and the Valley of the Fallen, which filed multiple complaints and appeals against the decree, members and officials of the ministries involved, as well as the National Heritage Trust, which administers the monument. According to the agreement, if the

Franco family – which is fiercely opposed to their grandfather being removed from the Valley of the Fallen – does not specify a new resting place, the government will decide on the site. The most probable option is the Mingorrubio cemetery, near El Pardo on the northern outskirts of Madrid, where the dictator’s wife is buried. The agreement states that “the decision (on the new burial site) will fall to the government, which will do it with the highest respect for the dignity of the family and the appropriate decorum.” It adds that the government’s decision has “all the necessary legal guarantees to ensure its legality.” The Justice Ministry has a report from the National Heritage Trust on what structural work needs to be done to the Santa Cruz Basilica – which houses Franco’s tomb – for the dictator’s body to be removed. This document was sent to San Lorenzo de El Escorial City Hall, where the basilica is located, in order to obtain the necessary permissions to remove the thick granite tombstone. According to the plan from the National Heritage Trust, once Franco’s body is exhumed, workers will have to move his tomb and cover the space with six black marble tiles identical to the existing ones. The state agency assures this is a simple, “minor” job that could be done by any funeral home in a matter of hours, but has not indicated which company will be responsible for the task. It adds that the work “should not affect the architectural considerations of the property.”The budget for the exhumation is just €3,738. The move to remove Franco’s remains

from the Valley of the Fallen was one of Sánchez’s star policies when he came to power in June through a no-confidence motion against Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party (PP), but he had been unprepared by the backlash from the Franco family. When the Franco family realized that they could not avoid the exhumation, they instead demanded the body be reburied next to the grave of his daughter, Carmen Polo, in La Almudena cathedral, a landmark building in central Madrid that attracts thousands of visitors. The government decided that it could not let this happen under any circumstances – no European dictator currently rests in a cathedral. To stop the Franco family from reburying the dictator’s remain in La Almudena, the central government’s delegate in Madrid published a report at the end of December concluding that the body must not be interred in the cathedral on reasons of public order, the risk of terrorist threats, and the possibility of confrontations between supporters and detractors in the crypt itself, a holy site where the police would not be able to enter. The 13.6-square kilometre Valley of the Fallen site remains hotly contested in a country still struggling to come to terms with the legacy of the dictatorship of Franco, who was the Spanish head of state from the end of the Civil War in 1939 to his death in 1975. The site was ostensibly built to commemorate all of the victims on both sides of Spain’s bitter and bloody Civil War, and the remains of more than 33,000 victims

of the conflict lie there. But critics point out that the Valley of the Fallen, which features a basilica and a 150-metre-high cross that dominates the surrounding countryside, contains just two marked graves: those of Franco himself and José Antonio Primo de Rivera, the founder of the Falange, Spain’s fascist-inspired political party. At the same time, thousands of prisoners of war who fought against Franco in the civil conflict were among the workforce used in its construction. More delays? The lawyer for the Franco family, Luis Felipe Utrera-Molina, says he will review the agreement and immediately contact the Spanish government “in writing” to communicate the family’s intention to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court and file measures to stop the exhumation. The family has up to two months to take action and is likely to wait to see how the political situation in Spain plays out, given general elections have been called for 28th April. Spain’s National Heritage Trust has delivered a report on the work required for the exhumation to San Lorenzo de El Escorial City Hall in order to obtain the necessary permits. The local authorities have been swamped with 13 legal appeals and another three against the City Hall itself. Most of the complaints target the competency of the local authorities and argue that the exhumation does not fall under a license for minor work.

Gordon Ramsay is unrecognisable as he goes undercover as a bearded old man for new TV show

Gordon Ramsay showcased a very unique new look for his new show 24 Hours To Hell And Back when he dressed up as an elderly woman. Taking on another disguise, the TV chef, 52, has ditched the Mrs Doubtfire look, this time in favour of a portly, bearded old man. In new stills from the show, he visits another restaurant undercover to try out their menu, judging them on the sly. The American series’ latest instalment sees the British cook having a meal at the Los Toros Mexican Restaurant in Los Angeles. In the show, however, the chef is swiftly recognised by the waiters - with this disguise clearly not having the same effect as his previous drag costume. The show then gives restaurant staff just 24 hours to turn around their service, menu and anything else wrong with it.

Iberia gets six months to adapt to EU ownership rules in hard Brexit

Airline Iberia will have six months to reorganise its shareholding structure to ensure it complies with EU regulations on European ownership should the United Kingdom leave the European Union in March without a deal. In the case of a hard Brexit, as the potential crashing out of the UK from the 28-member bloc is known, airlines that are not over 50 percent controlled by EU shareholders will lose their flying rights. This would affect former Spanish flag carrier Iberia, which, along with British Airways, is owned by the UK holding company IAG. The Council of the European Union and the European Parliament, which work together to negotiate and adopt EU laws, have reached a provisional agreement “to mitigate the severe disruption to air connectivity for passengers and

freight between the European Union and the United Kingdom in the event that the UK leaves the EU without a deal.” Under the plan, affected airlines will have six months to adapt their shareholder structure to make sure they comply with EU ownership requirements. The countdown will begin once an EU regulation on airline contingency measures goes into effect. “If, as a result of Brexit, an air carrier holding an operating licence issued by an EU member state ceases to comply with EU ownership and control requirements, it will have six months after the date of application of the Regulation to fully meet all those requirements,” said a statement issued on Tuesday by the Council of the EU, the body where national ministers from each EU country meet to adopt laws and coordinate policies. The Council had originally proposed a seven-month period, while the EU Parliament favoured 12 months, something that the European Commission considered incompatible with the legal framework for a hard Brexit, according to sources familiar with the talks. The tougher conditions are also Brussels’ way of making it clear that a no-deal Brexit will be much more traumatic for British interests than

a negotiated exit. Stricter Although the final time frame is stricter than expected, sources at the Parliament said that it is still better than an earlier plan to set 26th October as a fixed date for compliance. The six-month countdown will begin once the EU regulation goes into effect, and this could be delayed if Brexit is pushed beyond 29th March, as appears increasingly likely. Air carriers such as Iberia and Vueling, which is also owned by IAG, will have two weeks from the entry into force of the regulation “to submit a precise and complete plan presenting the measures intended to achieve full compliance with the ownership and control requirements.” The government of Theresa May and the EU negotiated an exit agreement on 25th November, but the text was overwhelmingly voted down by the British parliament. On Wednesday, May will be in Brussels to try to make changes to the agreement that British members of parliament will accept. Faced with the risk of a new rejection, Brussels is currently drafting contingency plans for a hard Brexit.

TWO OR MORE DIET DRINKS A DAY LINKED TO STROKE RISK that artificially sweetened drinks may not be harmless and that high consumption is associated with having a higher risk of both stroke and heart disease. The results were obtained after adjusting for stroke risk factors, such as age, high blood pressure, and smoking. Switching to low-calorie and lowsugar sodas may seem like a healthy choice, but a new study finds that may not be the case. According to a study in Stroke published this month, postmenopausal women who consumed multiple diet drinks each day were more likely to have a stroke or other cardiovascular event. The study comes as the public is increasingly turning away from fizzy drinks altogether. In recent years the popular beverages have been linked to a higher risk of obesity, even in diet form. Researchers found that compared to women who had diet drinks less than once a week or not at all, women who had two or more diet drinks per day were significantly more at risk for vascular issues. They were 23 percent more likely to have a stroke, 31 percent more likely to have a clot-caused stroke, 29 percent more likely to develop heart disease, and 16

percent more likely to die overall. The self-reported data came from more than 81,000 women who were between 50 and 79 years old at the start of the study, which went from 1993 to 1998. The authors caution that the results don’t prove that the diet drinks definitively cause stroke. Instead the study found there was a correlation between drinking more diet soft drinks and cardiovascular events. Certain women are more at risk than others, the study noted. Those who had diet drinks more than twice daily had a doubled risk for stroke, especially if they previously had heart disease or diabetes. Similarly, women who were obese without previous heart disease or diabetes were also at risk. African-American women without previous heart disease or diabetes were 3.93 times as likely to have a clot-caused stroke. Along with other observational research, the current study shows

Results questioned Dr. Michael Miller, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, has concerns with how the study was done and said more research is needed. He said the better way to get more definitive results is to have a group of women matched for risk factors such as weight and cholesterol and then to randomise them to groups consuming varying amounts of diet drinks daily and measure the response. “In my opinion, this diet soda study falls flat,” he said. Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller, PhD, a co-author of the study from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said that the team would like to do more research on types of sweeteners and genetic factors that could predispose some people to respond negatively to artificial sweeteners. They’d also like to understand why the effect is so strong in AfricanAmerican women.

Things you need to know about Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine appreciation can be a snobbish hobby, but it doesn’t have to be. We can love wine without being obsessed by it, and we can be knowledgeable about it without lording our superiority over others. A basic knowledge of wine can keep us conversant in snobbish company and help us sort through the multitude of selections on the retail shelf, while still having a life. Most importantly, it can enhance our experience at the dinner table, where it matters most. Cabernet sauvignon is the progeny of cabernet franc and sauvignon blanc, two grapes still prominent today. It originated, probably spontaneously, in Bordeaux in France, in the mid-1700s. For wine romanticists, that means the Bordeaux that Thomas Jefferson enjoyed on his visits to the region in the 1780s were probably not primarily cabernet. It grows almost everywhere wine grapes are planted, because it is so popular. But that doesn’t mean it performs well everywhere. It favours a temperate Goldilocks climate: Not too hot,

not too cold. In its homeland of Bordeaux, cabernet dominates the red wine blends in the Médoc and Graves, two areas on the Left Bank of the Gironde Estuary, closer to the maritime influence of the Atlantic. Wines labelled St. Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien, Margaux, Graves, Médoc or HautMédoc are likely to be at least 50 percent cabernet sauvignon. On the warmer, inland Right Bank, merlot and cabernet franc dominate the blends. Cab sauv is known for dark fruit flavours: black cherry, blackberry, black currant (cassis). There may also be baking spice - anise, clove, nutmeg. Graphite is a common descriptor, especially in Bordeaux; think of those No. 2 pencils you used to sharpen as a kid. When underripe or overcropped (too much fruit on the vine, diluting flavour), cab can taste green and vegetal. Herbal flavours, such as mint or sage, can be good, and a hint of bell pepper is fine. Same with black tea or olive. Any flavour that just says “vegetables,” not so much. If it tastes like dried fruit - prunes, raisins the grapes were overripe, and the alcohol is probably higher (15 percent or up). This is usually a stylistic choice by the winemaker; it’s up to you to decide whether you like it. Cabernet sauvignon is high in tannins, which make your teeth itch after you swallow the wine. Tannins are a status symbol for red wine, because they give it longevity in the cellar for long aging. For food pairing, just remember three words: fat cuts tannin. That’s why cab sauv is your ideal partner for grilled steaks, hamburgers, braised short ribs or any Flintstonian slabs of beef.

BEST FOOD AND DRINK APPS

The restaurant-app industry is booming, with stats showing that during 2018, 20 per cent of all adults who own a smartphone have visited one of the top 14 restaurant apps. Though most of us have heard of and possibly installed apps such as Costa Delivery and Tripadvisor, there are plenty of apps that go further than simply helping you to reserve a table and leave a review. Here are a few apps that every foodie, be they a fervent oenophile or eco-warrior, should have on their smartphone. Happy Cow (worldwide) A trusted online guide to vegan and vegetarian establishments since the late Nineties, Happy Cow also has a simple, reliable app for finding both vegan-friendly restaurants and B&Bs around the world.

Browse recommendations from the apps creators and fellow diners alike and add listings if you stumble across a restaurant that hasn’t yet been listed. happycow.net Local Wine Events (worldwide) Set out much like London app Dojo (another very good app for those looking for things to do and food to eat around London), Local Wine Events is a comprehensive What’s On page for all things winerelated. A quick scroll through the listings in my area shows sake tasting, mystery wine evenings and talks on just about every major wine-producing country, all within a five mile radius and taking place in the next month. Where Chefs Eat (worldwide) Keen foodies may already know

the hefty guidebook of the same name – now the makers of Where Chefs Eat have compressed the 7,000 recommendations into app form. It may seem steep to charge £10.99, but for those who would rather rely on the recommendations of Yotam Ottolenghi, Jason Atherton and Stephen Harris over an anonymous TripAdvisor post with multiple spelling mistakes, it’s a worthy investment. Organised into useful categories such as breakfast, late night, regular neighbourhood, bargain, high end and worth the travel, the app gives professional chef recommendations spanning all price ranges and cuisines for over 70 different countries. Ginventory (worldwide) Ginventory is an aesthetically pleasing and very easy to use app from Belgium that provides ratings and descriptions of over 5,000 gins, pairing them with over 400 tonics and 200 potential garnishes. That bottle of Bloom Gin that has been sitting on your desk since Christmas, you should be drinking it with Fentimans tonic water or rose lemonade, and garnished with a strawberry or violet. Not sure your local corner bar will be able to keep up, but it’s a fun app and useful for the serious G&T drinker.

The perfect steak revealed It's the hotly-contested method of cooking a steak. Heston Blumenthal flips his meat every 15 to 20 seconds while Gordon Ramsay prefers to turn his steak once every minute. However, Australian MasterChef 2010 winner Adam Liaw said the secret to the perfect steak actually has nothing to do with the number of times you flip it in the pan. Adam Liaw's step-by-step guide to cooking the perfect steak: • Season the steak with salt • Heat frying pan to a high heat • Once heated, add oil • Allow the steak to sizzle to form a crust on the outside • Turning the steak is a matter of preference. If you flip your meat more often, it will cook faster, while a steak turned less will spend more time in the pan, and have a flavoursome crust • Remove from pan once cooked to your liking • Allow to rest for half the amount of cooking time • If your meat is cold after resting, you can put it back on the pan at high heat for 20 seconds on each side before serving 'The quality of the beef will make the biggest difference to how it turns out. Has it been aged? Which cut is it?' the celebrity chef explained. He said the secret to a succulent steak bursting with flavours is the 'browning crust' on the outside.

'What you want is to actually fry the steak on high heat - the browning you get on the outside of the steak is where you get all the flavours,' he said. 'The heat is going to penetrate the steak from both sides, so the hotter the top of the steak is, the faster the steak is going to cook. The faster the steak cooks, well that means the less time it spends in the pan. So the less time it spends in the pan, the less of that brown crust you get on the outside.' Liaw explained the juices try to escape through the top of the steak when you're cooking it, so to keep your meat stays succulent, ensure you're searing off both sides evenly. Liaw said one of the biggest

mistakes most home cooks make was adding oil too early to the pan. ‘You heat up a pan first, then you put oil in the pan, then you put something in it,' he said. 'If you heat up oil in the pan, you're never going to get the pan hot enough because the oil is going to start smoking before the pan is hot enough to actually cook.' He also said needs to rest for 'half the amount of time you cooked it for.’ 'A lot of people don't rest their steak because they don't want it to go cold. You can actually take a rested steak and throw it back in the frying pan, and fry it again for 20 seconds on each side,' he added.

Cor Blimey! George Bernard Shaw’s famous play, Pygmalion, was written in early 1912 and first staged for the public in 1913. He based it on Greek mythology where Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, a beautiful woman, which unexpectedly came to life. Victorians were well aware of this myth which didn’t seem far-fetched to them. Shaw based Professor Henry Higgins on a couple of professors of phonetics, but especially the cantankerous Henry Sweet. The famous actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell was enamoured with it and was delighted to be included in the cast. It quickly became hot property, being performed in Vienna in 1913, New York in 1914, France in 1923 and Russian in the 1930s. It has, of course, been adapted countless times especially as a musical – My Fair Lady – and also as a film in 1938. Some poetic licence was taken in the latter because the pronunciation exercises “the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plan” and “in

Hertford, Hereford, and Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen” were never actually in Shaw’s original play. Each country had its own take on class distinctions and translators must have scratched their heads to find a suitable equivalent of “Not bloody likely!”. Pygmalion was undoubtedly one of Shaw’s greatest successes, being in contrast to his usual dry style, but fickle audiences wanted a happy ending which some of the actors/directors provided, much to Shaw’s annoyance. He apparently also did not want it turned into a musical: little did he realise what a money-spinner that was to become after his death! Jávea Players’ production of My Fair Lady will be performed at the Capitol Theatre, Rojales, for one night on 13 April at 19.00. Tickets cost 12€. It’s easy to book and choose your seat on line. Box office opens 20 February: for more information see www.javeaplayers.com.

Health & Beauty

It’s that time of year when we’re bombarded with quick-fixes and miracle diets promising easy weight loss. They may be enticing, with promises of hope and happiness, but fad diets are impossible to maintain. Even if you lose weight initially, their long-term impact on your physical and mental health is often detrimental. Studies show that calorie restriction can lower your metabolic rate and elevate your appetite for up to a year, leading to a cycle of restriction and overeating. It’s time to break that loop by switching your focus. Instead of counting calories and thinking about what to cut out, think about what to include, and see eating as an opportunity to nourish your mind and body. Here's how to eat yourself healthier... Eat to please your gut Adopting a diet that is gut friendly will positively benefit almost every aspect of your body and brain. Our gut is home to trillions of microbes (our ‘microbiome’) that protect us from infections, make vitamins and neurotransmitters, and influence our appetite, mood and weight. The best way to nurture your gut microbes is to eat a diverse diet rich in fibre, fruit, vegetables, polyphenols and probiotics. These provide ‘food’ for them, enabling them to thrive and multiply. The more diverse your diet, the more diverse (which is good) your microbiome. Fibre is our microbes’ favourite nutrient so aiming for 30g each day is a great way to keep them well fed. But not all fibre is the same, so consuming a wide variety of plants is key. Experts recommend eating at least 30 different plant foods (beans, lentils, fruit, veg, whole grains, nuts and seeds) each week to increase the diversity of your gut microbiome. Simple tips are to count a minimum of three different types in each meal, don’t eat the same lunch every day and include mixed seeds or nuts with breakfast. Include more plant protein Protein-rich plant foods such as beans, peas, nuts, seeds, soy and lentils, are nutritious and packed with phytochemicals (plant nutrients) and fibre. But this pattern of eating doesn’t Eating colourful vegetables and fruits sync with our body clock, or circadian every day can have a significant impact rhythms, which some believe may put us on cutting your risk of illness. Each colour at greater risk of obesity. Researchers has a unique set of disease-fighting believe that aligning your eating to your phytochemicals that confer big health body clock – shortening the window of benefits. For example, the deep red time in which you consume your day’s colour in tomatoes and watermelon is food – could boost your overall health from lycopene, shown to lower the risk of and potentially help you lose some fat. certain cancers; the purple colour in People have reported improved energy

levels, better sleep and weight loss. The theory is that our bodies are designed to digest and absorb food most efficiently during a relatively short period of each day; then repair itself and burn stored fat when we fast. It’s not known at the moment whether there is an optimum window or how critical timing is. However, having less opportunity to eat does seem to lead to less food intake, even in those not consciously trying to lose weight. A pilot study in 2018 found that people who delayed their usual breakfast time by 90 minutes, and brought their usual dinner time forward

by 90 minutes for 10 weeks lost more body fat than those who ate to whatever schedule they liked. If you are new to time-restricted eating, start off eating within a 12-hour window – e.g. from 8am to 8pm. If you want to take it a step further, increase the fasting time to 14 or 16 hours, so you eat within a 10 or eight-hour window (e.g. 8am to 6pm, or 10am to 6pm). Stop fearing fats For so long it’s been ingrained in us to cut down on fat. Research has now shown that, while high in calories, not all fats are the enemy. The unsaturated fats, which include monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are vital for our body’s physical and mental health. Researchers advise eating more of these

and less saturated fats. Monounsaturated fats, found in avocados, olive oil, nuts and seeds, help reduce the amount of LDL (bad) cholesterol and our overall risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Omega-3-rich foods – oily fish, walnuts and flax, chia, hemp and pumpkin seeds – support brain performance and memory, and also influence behaviour and mood. Some people perceive coconut oil to be healthy but the British Heart Foundation says it is more likely to raise levels of LDL cholesterol than lower them. A review of 55 studies on the effects of different oils on blood cholesterol found vegetable oils such as rapeseed, flaxseed and olive oil to be the best choice for lowering cholesterol. Coconut oil fared better than butter but seed oils, for example sunflower oil, won the day as the best ones for cooking your food in. Manage your alcohol Alcohol adds extra calories, makes you hungry, affects your sleep and can give you a sore head in the morning if you overdo it. There’s no denying that alcohol should be limited as part of a healthy diet. Annie Grace, author of The Alcohol Experiment, offers the following tips on how to manage your intake. Be mindful: Pay attention to why you’re drinking. Are you filling an emotional or physical need? Hunger, stress? Being mindful of why leads to healthier choices. Stay hydrated: You’re less likely to overdrink if you’re hydrated. Alcohol is a diuretic so you need to replace the fluid you’re losing. Replace it with water – not wine! Make decisions beforehand: Establish boundaries before drinking. Alcohol leads to poor decisions. Knowing your terms before helps you maintain resolve. Plan something for the next day: Avoid overdoing it by making morning plans. To honour your commitment, you’ll turn down just one more drink to turn in early instead. Question your beliefs: Examine if your reasons for drinking are based in reality. Is that drink really relaxing? Are you having fun? Are you happy? Answer those and decide if alcohol is going to benefit you that night.

Drastic changes in temperature cause half of all visits to A & E Both high and low temperatures have an effect on our health, and are determining factors for the body’s thermal regulation centre, having an adverse effect on some of our physiological functions, and even modifying the power of our defences in the face of pathogenic microorganisms, say experts at Quirónsalud Hospitals. “Thus, while high temperatures will favour gastrointestinal pathologies, low temperatures are often more favourable for respiratory pathologies, the cause of five out of every ten visits to Accident and Emergency,” states Doctor Fulgencio Molina, Head of theAccident & Emergency Service at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia. One of the most significant effects of cold temperature is vasoconstriction, which causes changes at the cardiovascular level, increasing blood pressure and heart rate, as well as in the nasal area, where it causes mucus to become denser. “Vasoconstriction caused by low temperatures,” warns Doctor Gemma Ramón, Family Physician at Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “increases the likelihood of myocardial infarction in patients with cardiovascular risk. For its

part, nasal vasoconstriction reduces our capabilities to eliminate the viruses we inhale which, together with the fact that we spend more time in places with no ventilation, such as offices, schools, etc., increases the risk of contagion of viral respiratory diseases such as catarrh, flu or pneumonia.” Viral respiratory diseases can include low-grade fever, bone and muscle pain, general malaise, cough and mucus, and can even become complicated in patients with chronic illnesses such as cardiac diseases, COPD and diabetes, presenting, in these cases, more severe symptoms, such as high fever, chest pain and dyspnoea or difficulty breathing. This is also the case for obese patients, smokers, and people older than 65 or younger than 5, points out Doctor Ramón. In order to avoid all these illnesses, the specialists at Quirónsalud recommend getting vaccinated, especially for the highrisk population, avoiding exposure to drastic changes in temperature, increase the ingestion of fruits, in particular citruses, and medical supervision for the most vulnerable population.

CBD beauty revolution

Now that the wellness and beauty industries are completely obsessed with CBD, it was only a matter of time before the trendy cannabis compound, said to have a myriad of benefits, got the Tom Ford treatment — which is to say, you can now find everything from CBD chocolates, capsules, gummies and balms, to tinctures, salves, lotions and oils in Net-a-Porter-worthy packaging. CBD lattes sold at beauty meccas like Chillhouse and post-yoga flow balms (just launched at Y7 Studio) are now a thing too. Many of these brands don't focus so much on the nitty-gritty medicinal talk, but rather let their glossy packaging do the CBD advocating for them.

New beauty trends There’s never been a better time for beauty. Buoyed by the sheer number of millennial consumers, with their desire to be Instagram-worthy and their constant craving for the new, the beauty industry is thriving. Custom combinations: Personalisation is the biggest overarching trend in the industry for 2019. Whether it’s the shade of their foundation or the “slip” of their moisturiser, consumers expect to mix and match different products/brands to get exactly what they want. Striking oil: Oils continue to be a huge skin care trend. According to Pinterest, which recently released its top 100 trend predictions for 2018, repins of “cleansing oil” are up 555 percent.

masks” are trickling down to the mass market. Shelter from the sun: Skin protection is a growing concern worldwide with special attention to products that promise to shield consumers from sun and pollution. UV-filtering antioxidant products are popular as the ozone shrinks. Lashing out: Now that consumers have done everything possible to their brows, 2018 features a renewed focus on eyes. Pinterest says searches for “lashes” are up 152 percent and with new mascaras launching seemingly every day, there’s no shortage of product to fulfil customers’ needs. Bright eyeliner and eye shadow are popular as well; Pinterest searches for “bright eye shadow” have increased by 63 percent. Shine on: Speaking of eye-catching

looks, glitter is also prominent this year. Whether it’s crystals, jewels or actual glitter on the eyelids, golden highlighter or shimmery lip glosses, consumers want stuff that sparkles. Nailed it: ‘Nail art’ shows no signs of fading (although nail art designs are becoming more minimalist). Mintel Market Research says the nail treatment category is especially hot, as consumers seek to care for their nail health the same way they care for their skin. Cleaning up: Last but far from least, natural cosmetics and skin care continue their climb. The latest trend, according to Future Marketing Insights, is “clean colour cosmetics.” Offering natural formulations without the “natural look,” these products offer full coverage, serious pigmentation and plenty of staying power.

Beauty gadgets: Derma rollers/facial rollers designed to help make skin care more effective will benefit from consumers’ desire to get the most from their products. Ranging from ice or needle rollers to jade and quartz, these tools also help consumers recreate the spa experience at home. Hurry up: At the other extreme from the time-consuming K-beauty rituals that captured consumers’ attention in 2018, convenience is hot this year. Miniature or travel-sized products will be popular, along with “just-add-water” options such as skin care in powder or film form. Mask madness: The mask craze is far from over. Charcoal masks and unique clays are popular. Masks with silt from remote lakes and volcanic ash, and “dry

US ban on hair discrimination The New York City Commission on Human Rights announced a new standard primarily targeted at people of colour. The guidelines protect New Yorkers' right to wear 'natural hair, treated or untreated hairstyles such as locs, cornrows, twists, braids, Bantu knots, fades, Afros, and/or the right to keep hair in an uncut or untrimmed state.' The new change grants those who have experienced harassment or discrimination because of their natural

hair the opportunity to take legal action against individuals in violation of the new guidelines for up to $250,000, and the commission can step in and change internal policies and re-hirings if necessary. The new policy will protect individuals in public accommodations, including restaurants and other businesses, as well as in workplaces and at private and public schools, where discrimination is frequent.

Tech Fact

92 per cent of the world's currency is digital Edward via email asks: I am currently having to deal with UK and Spanish solicitors but they are asking for documents to be signed and faxed but I live in Hondon and the nearest place that has a fax machine is 25km away and is often closed. Surely there must be a way I can turn an email into a fax and send it over my ADSL internet? Aunty Says: Hello Edward. Unfortunately you can’t simply send an email as a fax but I used to use www.myfax.com to get around this. If I remember correctly they let me use it for 30 days for free and after which I simply signed up with a different email address and got another free 30 days! It amazes me how many businesses still insist on communicating via fax when they know that no one has fax machines anymore. Johnny via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have bought a new HP laptop with windows 10 on it and the shop transferred all my info from my old laptop to my new one. On my previous laptop I had windows defender, Malwarebytes & Superantispyware but the shop put Avast free antivirus & C Cleaner on my new one and they told me they are as good as what were on before & won`t slow the laptop as much, just wondered what your opinion is as usually you recommend windows defender etc. Aunty Says:

Hello Johnny. I’m still a big fan of Windows Defender and I don’t agree that Avast will run any faster than Defender or give you any more security. As Defender is also a Microsoft product it sits really well with Windows and the updates are smooth and trouble free. I would strongly recommend also having

either Malwarebytes or Superantispyware and run a scan once a week. Ccleaner isn’t really a security program, more for clearing out old unwanted junk. Joan via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have a Samsung tablet and I’m continually getting an error message “there is insufficient storage to install this app” but as far as I know I haven’t asked to install anything. I only have a few photos and I don’t use the tablet for much other than Facebook, a bit of

chatting with Skype and browsing the web. Aunty says: This app could be anything Joan and quite likely an update for one of your existing apps or an Android system update. A bit of housekeeping to remove any unused apps plus clearing out some cache will fix this but it can be very fiddly. There are a couple of free apps that you can download that will save you hours of time, but as you have no space you will need to free up a small amount of storage to allow the cleanup app download. Go to “settings” and “App Manager” and look down the list for any apps that you no longer use and click on “Clear Data” and “Clear Cache”. Do this for a couple of apps and hopefully you will clear enough space to install the free Clean Master app from the Play Store. If you don’t already have an SD memory card then invest €15 in a 32GB card and use the Clean Master app to help move photos and apps from your tablet’s internal memory onto the SD card. Well that’ll do for another week, email your problems to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

This means that most of the money you earn, transact with, use to buy goods/services and so on exists only on computers and hard drives. Only an estimated 8 per cent of currency globally is physical money. All the black money piles come from within this 8 per cent. This is a fair estimate that economists seem to agree on though, not an exact figure. This low percentage seems absurd but when you stop to think, it makes sense considering that most large transactions are done electronically anyway. Banks store electronically too and the 92 per cent includes all kinds of transactions done using credit/debit cards and wire transfers. Might be a good idea to revisit all those hacker movies where a nerdy computer hacker manages to siphon billions off in just a few minutes.

Proper seat belt use is vital Seat belts save lives, it is a simple message, but their design is slightly flawed in that if we choose not to wear them correctly, they can be as useless as not wearing one at all. The wearing of seat belts can reduce the risk of injury during a car crash. When used properly, they provide drivers and passengers with increased protection. However, when used improperly, their ability to provide this safety is compromised. Proper seat belt adjustments are necessary to allow the restraints to work effectively. Wear a diagonal belt across the upper chest. Drivers often complain that this strap is uncomfortable, and they sometimes slip this behind their backs or under the arm. However, when you do this, the belt's ability to protect you from injury is decreased. Seat belts are designed to distribute force upon two areas of the body. Without this diagonal strap in place, this is impossible.

When you put your seat belt on you should make sure that it fits snugly to the body at the front, diagonally across the chest, and the waist, gently pulling the straps to make the necessary adjustments. Although padded seat belt covers can make the wearing of the belt feel more comfortable, they can also reduce the effectiveness, which is also the case for padded clothing such as coats, and so these should be avoided. The seat belt needs to make as close a contact with your body at the key protection areas as possible. In a vehicle, every occupant must wear a seat belt. If a car only has two seat belts fitted at the back seats, then it can only carry two people. Rear seats where three seat belts are fitted are the only acceptable way in which three passengers can be carried. Children under 135cm in height are not allowed in the front seats, and even when in the back must wear an approved restraint suitable to them.

Driving on a motorway in a prohibited vehicle It does come as a surprise to many, but there are occasions when vehicles which we would not normally expect to see on a motorway are permitted. In most cases, driving on a motorway in a prohibited vehicle, such as a horse or hand drawn vehicle, a cycle or moped for example, will result in a fine, as will carrying an insecure load which can fall or that compromises the stability of the vehicle. There are some motorways where cyclists are permitted, but it is up to you to check this before you ride on them, and you must stay on the hard shoulder. These do exist, but are not the norm. If you do find yourself on a motorway with a prohibited vehicle you risk a 200 euro fine. The reason is that motorways are designed for fast and safe traffic. Although speed can be a contributing factor to incidents on the roads, motorways are designed in such a manner that they are generally safer at higher speeds than normal roads, with long sweeping curves and flat, straight sections, free from more vulnerable road

users such as pedestrians and cycles, and largely free of distractions as they are sterile areas. Vehicles which are unable to reach a minimum threshold of speed are

banned because as traffic is moving faster, reaction and stopping times are increased and if a slower vehicle is in the path of one moving at high speed there is less time to deal with that hazard.

Carrying gas canisters We often have to repeat articles to serve as a reminder, and to advice those who may not know of course, and when the temperature dips, the importance of correctly carrying gas canisters in the car is vital knowledge. Trough their contracts, the gas supply companies will deliver the bottles to your home, but many people find it more convenient to pick up their own supply at many of the outlets across the

country, exchanging the empty bottles for full ones, but in order to do this, we have to think about the safety and security implications of carrying a potentially lethal canister. Depending on their size and weight, the canisters can be very heavy as they are filled with pressurised gas. At home, care

should be taken as to where they are stored, in well ventilated places, away from heat and ignition sources, far away from toxic materials and always in an upright position. In the car, it is equally crucial to take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and the safety of other road users. Spanish law states that you can carry 2 gas bottles in the car, and they must be carried in an upright, vertical position. You must also take necessary measure to ensure that the canisters are secured in the vehicle and cannot move during the journey. The law also states that when you are carrying gas canisters, it is forbidden to park the vehicle in an underground car park. You should also check with your local supply company for their recommendations for storage and carriage, as gas canisters can pose a major threat if not handled correctly, but are perfectly safe if the advice is followed. We sometimes see gas canisters carried on mopeds or motorbikes, this is not a good idea as the stability of the vehicle will be seriously affected, and therefore, under the terms dictated by the law, they will not be considered safe.

Lo Crispin GS The Celts Club de Golf The Society held an individual stableford competition at Vistabella on 20th February. Conditions for playing golf were good, with the sun shining almost throughout, and with very little wind. As usual the greens were fast and the flags on numerous greens, were not placed kindly for us amateur golfers. Despite this most members were just glad to be out in the fresh air. After the game, as usual we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern were Tapas and a friendly welcome awaited us. The day’s winners were acknowledged and prizes given. Gold Division 1st. RECORD TURNOUT FOR WALKING FOOTBALL CLUB 17thFebruary saw attendance records smashed when 21 players turned up to join in with our Thursday session of the GRAN ALACANT OLDIES WALKING FOOTBALL CLUB session. With this in mind, we are now looking at extending our playing time to 1 ½ hours, when necessary, still starting at 12 noon, so that everyone gets plenty of playing time. We now contribute over 650 euro to the sports centre and Town Hall with our sessions here on GA and

competitive games held in Santa Pola. To date, two of these home matches have been held at the Pereira Stadium in Santa Pola. Both have been won by a 2 nil scoreline. The Hondon game goals were scored by Gary Beeney and Tim Litherland and in the game against San Miquel the goalscorers were Gary Beeney and David Lamb. 14 of the Thursday regulars made themselves available for the second game giving us 9 players on the pitch plus 7 substitutes cheering on from the sidelines. After both games we met at the smashing Tango Bar in Santa Pola, where we all congregate after the games for a buffet and drinks.

T

his month the course was only a short distance from Quesada. On arrival the greens looked in excellent condition but as we were to find out later sometimes too fast for the members. The day started off chilly but the sun came out for an excellent days golf. With the new set up at Vistabella we did expect some high scores and some low scores from the members that hadn’t played the course in its new format. Nevertheless when the match was finished and the scores recorded excellent scores were seen from most. It also appeared that this was the Chris Byrne day, congratulations to him and as you will see from the results below. Many thanks to the greenkeeping staff at Vistabella for giving us a good days golf and to James and his staff at Bar 10 in Quesada where an excellent buffet was provided. All the cards having been scrutinized the results are below:

Overall winner: James Crisp 37 points Gold Winner: Andy Trefry 35 points on c/b Gold Runner Up: Brent Hollings 35 points Silver Winner: Chris Byrne 35 points Silver Runner Up: Ron Kerry 33 points Best Guest: Derek Williams 30 points Nearest the Pin: 2nd Chris Byrne 7th Chris Byrne 11th Dave Nicholls 15th Chris Byrne Twos: Chris Byrne/Ron Kerry Football Card: Gwen Byrne The next match will be at La Serena on 15th March. We celebrated our championship match last Saturday at La Serenawith a fantastic 97 players. This does not happen by chance and our thanks are due to Camillus Fitzpatrick, Philip Mountford and Terry Fitzgerald for organising the competition on the day. Tothe staff in the pro-shop, Paul, Karolina and Jose, thank you foryour attention to detail and for preparing the cards and collating the results. Gloria and all the kitchen staff well done as always. To Wayne and his teamit has become customary to have the course presented to such a high standard, To James Hayes our captain well done and I do hope your hand is sorted soon. Luckily Ray Brennan was not among the prize winners this time. Please be careful with his poor hand. To all who stayed back for the presentation many thanks it all added to the atmosphere. Imanyo Golf Society “Captains Cup”

Our first visit of the year to BonAlba resulted in a glorious day weather wise ,but the same could not be said of the scoring which, for the second competition running ,produced well below average returns. However, some members did perform well ,and top score in the Gold section went to Captain Bill Stobo with 32 points. In the Silver section the award went to octogenarian Bill England with a magnificent return of 35 points. Like a good wine he seems to improve with age!! Nearest the pins went to Geoff Ettridge, Jeff Boardman ,Danny Divers and guest Paul Hayward. The TWO'S pot was shared by Danny Divers and Alex Leach. Many thanks to Helena at the La Marina Sports Centre for providing us wth Paolo's tasty homemade pizza and fries after the game. Our next meeting is at Font Del Llop on March 7th, first tee 10.00 a.m at a cost of 50 Euros when we will be playing for the Helena and Paola Trophy. List is on the notice board as usual or contact Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk. A reminder of our first Quiz Night of the year is on 12th March. Please contact Iain Lyall on 966393203 or 634326451 to reserve your places.

Imanyo golf society Captains Cup was sponsored by The Vegetable Garden and Mick the Grip, they both made sure we had a great days golf with an excellent presentation back at Imanyo’s. It was our first visit to El Plantio for over seven months and it was as if we hadn’t been away with the usual organised set up, the course was in good condition but some of the greens looked a bit tired on the front nine this let the course down especially when playing in high season? The weather was perfect for golf especially when the sun got to work. The format was full handicap Stableford; we split into two groups, A and B, with a winner from each group and one being the overall winner. The winner of the Captains Cup was Tom Goulden from group B with a fantastic handicap cutting score of 44 points, runner up in group B was “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 37 points.

issues that we might address in order to improve the experience for all in a tournament, firstly the issue of slow play. Can players please keep up with the group in front of them. Do not wait until it is your turn to play to start your routine, putting on or taking off your glove, marking and cleaning your ball, selecting your club, measuring your distance for your shot etc. all of these can be done in advance and this will help the smooth flow of the game. We had two more players disqualified on the day, one for not presenting their card and one for no signature. It is your responsibility to have your card signed and return it to the tournament director. We have a waiting list in operation at the moment for membership at La Serena, however membership of The Celts is always available. If you would like information on joining our club or entering a team in any of the federation events why not send an email to johnobrienalicante@gmail.com or call 615466398?

Winner from group A, also on a fantastic handicap cutting score, was another regular name John Mcmillan with 43 points, runner up in group A was Chris Houghton with 39 points. All six nearest the pins were won, hole 3 Chris Darling, hole 7 Andy Godfrey, hole 9 Chris Houghton, holes 14 and 16 Steven Ayre and hole 18 “The Joker” Mick Billins. The football card was won by “Sandy” Terry Burton with Wolverhampton Wonderers winning €40, Terry kindly donated €20 back making €60 for this year’s charities. We would like to thank The Vegetable Garden and Mick the Grip for sponsoring the day, also Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s Bar for the good food and great hospitality. RODS & REELS

We fished the 7th round of the Abbey Angling Cup on the River Segura at Murcia on the 19th February The water levels are down with hardly any flow, and the cold easterly wind is still with us keeping the water temperatures down and the fish still hard to come by. Only six fish was required to win the match, which I managed to do with 8.360kgs, in second place was Richard Wood with 5.940kgs and coming in third spot was Dave Hutchinson with 2.460kgs

Our 8th round of the Winter Championship was fished on the El Bosquet Complex Section B on the 20th February. What a difference a day makes from yesterday, today was a warm sunny day and the weights were reasonable. With the winning weight coming off the back channel with 17.660kgs was Neil McBirnie, and in second place was Mick Hill with 13.820kgs and closely following him to take third spot was Ian Brown with 13.440kgs

D

ear reader, I think there is only one person who has been busier than me this weekend and that is the Manchester United physio dealing with all those injuries in the Premier League game against Liverpool. Had this been late 2018, the obvious funny football news would have been how he’d had more of an influence on proceedings than Paul Pogba etc etc, but not on Sunday. But the funniest bit of this weekend ended up being at Wembley where Chelsea goalkeeper refused to be substituted by his manager Maurizio Sarri in what turned out to be another embarrassing defeat for the Chelsea manager. Kepa was clearly struggling with an injury and Big Willy Caballero was stripped and ready to come on the for penalty shoot-out but Kepa literally stood his ground and refused to leave the pitch. At one point, it looked like Sarri had jacked it all in as he was heading down the Wembley tunnel only to come back and be restrained by Antonio Rudiger as it looked like the coach might do some damage to the world record fee inducing shot-stopper. But hey, we’ll come on to the result a little bit later. Of the League Cup Final, I mean. Not the argument between those two.

Tight Lines. TERRY SCREEN.

START ‘EM YOUNG

Pictured here is Daniela, the two year old daughter of the professional coach at Greenlands Golf. Star of the future Daniela is practicing her swing with a friend on the new Adventure Golf Course that has just opened at the complex.

At Old Trafford, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata had to be replaced early in the match with Marcus Rashford hopefully looking over to the bench to see whether they’d noticed how he was hobbling around. Jesse Lingard came on us as the second substitute and had to go off again before half time meaning we finally saw Alexis Sanchez. I

mean, how out of favour is the Chilean right now? Andreas Pereira got on the pitch before him. Jesse Lingard, clearly not fit, got on the pitch before him. That said, what does all this say about the £50m Brazilian Fred? Scott McTominay and Pereria were trusted more than the Brazilian in the absence of Nemanja Matic and Herrera and, frankly, Pereria isn’t living up to his potential. The weird juxtaposition was the perennially injured Daniel Sturridge coming on for Robert Firmino in the first half and finishing the match unscathed. If I’d told you four players had gone off, you’d have put money on him being one of them. The game at Old Trafford had a fair amount of huff and puff but not many shots on goal. Liverpool fans might start getting a little jittery, thinking that they really should have been beating a weakened United side if they are to go on and win the title. Actually, they’re probably right. Jurgen Klopp was caught immediately after the final whistle giving his assessment to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he didn’t say, ‘wow what a great game!’ that is for sure. Still, at least we got to see Graeme Souness in all his glory on Sky. Unsurprisingly, Chelsea made a slightly better fist of it against Man City at Wembley. They managed to keep them out for a whole X this time, even if it did look like a defence versus attack training session to begin with. Credit to Chelsea though, they clearly fancied a cup final more than a meaningless Premier League match as they showed some of that ‘character and desire’ Maurizio Sarri has been banging on about. Suddenly Sarriball doesn’t look like a complete waste of time when the players decide to put in a shift. It’s almost as if they don’t respect him. In the end, City retained the League Cup by winning the penalty shoot-out. Raheem Sterling annoyed the Daily Mail once again by netting the decisive spot-kick and Kepa probably should have saved all five if he wanted to save face. It’s nice to see tht Chelsea brought in Gonzalo Higuain for the big moments, though. The Argentine was behind Jorginho, Ederson and David Luiz on the shoot-out list/ All in all, it wasn’t the most Super of Sundays. Barely a shot was mustered from four of the top sides in the country and I am including Jorginho’s penalty in that. So, Tottenham’s title bid, which was already over really, was supposed to have been really over

when Harry Kane did his ankle in several weeks ago. Tottenham’s results since that injury? A 100% record, putting them on the outskirts of Titleshire once again. Kane returns against Burnley and guess what? They lose! It doesn’t matter though, right? Because Harry scored and that’s the most important thing. I jokingly suggested a couple of weeks back that Spurs are actually better without their number nine. I’m not even sure I am joking now. Unai Emery will be feeling slightly happier having survived the Europa League banana skin against BATE and now beaten Southampton. Mesut Ozil was out, again, despite being quite good on Thursday night. It didn’t matter though, as Arsenal won 2-0 to keep the pressure on those above. The Claude Puel sackometer finally swung so far towards ‘Puel out’ that the Leicester City had no other option but to sack the Frenchman after his side lost 4-1 at home to Crystal Palace. Michy and Wilf did the business on Uncle Roy’s 101st birthday, meaning he is now the oldest manager to ever win a game of Premier League football. Leicester, amusingly, hope to persuade Brendan Rodgers to give up his cushy little number at Celtic to come and manage a team who will never, ever be able to live up to their past. Newcastle United’s record signing, Miguel Almiron, had clearly been taking smiling lessons from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer given that he spent his entire first start for Rafa Benitez running around the pitch doing good things whilst grinning. Newcastle beat guaranteed to be doomed Huddersfield 2-0 and already Almiron seems to have struck up an understanding with Salomon Rondon. Friday night feels like a very long time ago now but there was a Premier League doubleheader. Fulham look certain to be joining Huddersfield in the Championship next season losing 3-1 to West Ham despite Ryan Babbel opening the scoring with his first Premier League goal in 3000 days. Yes, that’s 3000. Down in Cardiff, Gerard Deulofeu scored a hattrick to stuff Neil Warnock’s men 5-1. Watford are decent under Javi Gracia and are looking good to get relegated next season by qualifying for the Europa League. In Bournemouth’s 1-1 draw with Wolves, Josh King’s penalty miss was so bad that the groundsman tried to drown him on the spot.

Your week in sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

I’ve decided that I’m happy for England to throw the rest of the ODI series against the Windies if we get to see more of that wonderful celebration from Sheldron Cottrell each time he takes a wicket. Cottrell, a private in the Jamaican army bowled his skiddy left-arm pace in such a way that he picked up 5-46 in the second ODI of the series, meaning we got to see his military salute celebration five times. It’s almost worth the Sky subscription in itself. The Windies had set England 290 to go 2-0 up in the series following a very stylish ton from Shimron Hetmyer who finished on 104 not out. The boy can bat. Cottrell then pounded in removing Johnny Bairstow and

Wednesday’s man-of-the-match Jason Roy early, before returning to sort it all out again just as England looked like they were going to chase it down again.

Jason Roy After all, 290 was nothing compared to the 360 that England knocked off at a canter in the first match. It’s safe to say Roy made up for

dropping Chris Gayle when he was in single figures (the big-hitting opener eventually got going to smack a glorious ton) by plundering the ball over the ropes several times himself in his own magnificent century. Joe Root, who always looks so fresh when not weighed down by the Test captaincy, got to three figures as well as England, momentarily, looked unbeatable. Any thoughts of this series being one-way traffic need to be shelved now and by the time you read this, there is every chance you’ll know the outcome of the third instalment. With the World Cup starting in just under 100 days now, England seem to be in a position where all bar one position in the squad is nailed down. With Jofra Archer being available once this Windies series is over, will England gamble on bringing in another man who can whiz it down at 90+ mph or bring him in after the tournament?

Archer hasn’t actually played much 50 over stuff, he is very much a T20 travelling nomad but he is very, very rapid and would be a very interesting option in Eoin Morgan’s squad. If England do consider him as viable, then that has to put the likes of David Willey, Tom Curran and maybe even fellow paceman Mark Wood under threat. Joe Denly is out there on this tour, but he can’t really be part of the World Cup squad, can he? As Mark Butcher, a TV analyst that is growing on me, said, maybe you wouldn’t put Archer in the XI immediately, but having that kind of option in the squad could be the extra sauce England need. Batting wise, England fire more often than not and there shouldn’t be too much concern about Friday’s failure to chase. Mind you, if it happens again on Monday… Speaking of England teams with

an eye on the World Cup losing, let us switch codes to the game of rugby. At half time, England were well on track for the Grand Slam in Cardiff. By the final whistle, they’d become another notch on the Welsh bedpost as they came back to win 21-13. Now it is Wales who are odds on to do the Grand Slam and will head to the World Cup above England in the world rankings; not that world rankings really mean anything. Scotland, well Scotland still hate playing in Paris. Chris Eubank Jr managed to prove his father wrong in beating James De Gale on points in their big showdown on Saturday night. It was last chance for both boxers with both claiming that defeat would see them retire and Eubank Sr was far from convinced his son had the desire or heart to come through. Dad’s, eh? What do they know?
