Nine month deadline for driving after Brexit fter this deadline, British driving licences cannot be exchanged for the Spanish equivalent unless a bilateral agreement is reached between both governments. A range of measures were agreed as part of a Royal Decree issued on Friday in order to protect British citizens in the event of a no-deal Brexit. The decree gives British residents of Spain access to healthcare until at least the end of 2020. Spain has also agreed it will provide residency for an estimated 400,000 Britons and maintain freedom of movement at the Gibraltarian border. Spain’s Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell

is becoming increasingly likely. The Spanish government has made it clear that the concessions they are offering to British citizens here are subject to Spanish people in the UK receiving equivalent treatment. Over 9,000 Spaniards cross the border with Gibraltar every day to work, while an estimated 150,000 Spaniards live in the UK.

BITE SIZE No sunbeds this Easter NEWS: A sponsored walk will be held on Saturday 6th April to raise money for the San José Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela. The Easter themed 5km walk will start from 222 Bar Playa Los Locos at 10am and fancy dress is optional for the occasion. The walk is being organised by Vivienne Paterson and her husband Alan from The Irish Rover on calle Dr. Wacklman, La Rosealada. They have worked hard raising money for the orphanage for some time now and are keen to make sure that the children there have what they need. The orphanage caters for around 70 children between the ages of 6 and 18 years old. Some of the children are at the home because their parents died and others because they were removed from their families due to abuse. The orphanage struggles to fund the care it provides and relies on donations such as this to equip the children with some basic items. If you would like to take part you can obtain sponsor forms from Vivienne at The Irish Rover. It should be a fun day and all for a good cause.

There is concern that it is not only the Easter season that could be affected but also that of the summer. One of the difficulties is the length of the normal contracting process. It is now too late to have something in place for the Easter

departments including the national coastline department, which makes contracting even more problematic. Because it is not an essential service it cannot operate without a contract. It is hoped that the lack of sunbed hire provision does not put injeopardy the blue flag status of Torrevieja’s beaches.

BITE SIZE Renewed concern NEWS: over burning waste Continued from page 3 include on Thursday 21st March the local historian Rafael Torres Montesinos, presenting a talk which will take a historical perspective and places the earthquake in its context. On Friday March 22nd the geologist Nahum Méndez and Rubén Torregrosa from Proyecto Mastral will present their paper ‘Science and the folklore of earthquakes’ which aims to offer a scientific version of popular myths. The presentations will take place at the Palacio de la Música at 8pm. Admission is free. On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March there will be some theatre in the streets. Using role play, characters will place themselves around the town to familiarise people with the Torrevieja before, during and after the earthquake. The route will be 2km long and begins at 11am. It will take those participating around two hours to complete. If you are interested in taking part in this you should register on https://www.eventbrite.es/e/entradasruta-teatralizada-1829-torrevieja-tiembl a-54129786649.

tip in Campoamor The illegal waste tip in Campoamor, which was burning for close to 15 years and was a danger to the health of those living nearby, was sealed in 2016, after a neighbourhood campaign led by CLARO. Thereafter, an action plan was imposed on the owner of the site by the Valencian authorities. This included covering the area of exposed waste with topsoil, planting of vegetation and landscaping the entire surface of the landfill. The plan was based on a report indicating that the area was of special

vegetation has not been started, and there is also serious neighbourhood concern that the support of the cone of more than 15 meters high was deteriorating due to erosion, rainfall and lack of maintenance and that the thousands of tons of buried waste of all kinds were beginning to emerge again in many points. The concern is that toxic pockets of combustion will reappear which would again affect the health of those living in nearby urbanisations, in particular Las

environmental interest since it is located within the Site of Community Interest (LIC) and the Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) of the Sierra Escalona and the Dehesa de Campoamor. CLARO made a visit this week to the landfill with presidents and representatives of the nearby affected urbanizations confirming that although the burning had stopped, the regeneration plan was not being executed. The second phase of re-

Ramblas, as well as the two golf courses that are about 500 metres away. In agreement with the presidents and representatives of Las Ramblas and nearby urbanisations, CLARO will inform the relevant Valencian authorities of what is happening and demand that the company which owns the site ensures adequate maintenance and resumption of the plan for the re-vegetation and restoration of the environment of the landfill.

Disagreement over family centre There is disagreement in the town hall about the use of a building in avenida Delfina Viudes. It is proposed that it is designated for use as a family meeting point, as a centre for looked-after children and a place that can cater for people with mental and physical health needs. The building was completed in 2012 at a cost of 4.6 million. However, the PP party, currently in opposition, have questioned the use of the building for looked after children and young people. They have suggested that this facility would be better provided in another part of the town. There is concern that the building would become a centre for young offenders rather than just for those young people with serious family problems.

Budget adjustments in Torrevieja Seven budget modification have been made to the town council’s current budget plan. José Hurtado, councillor for the budget, explained that a budget will constantly need updating as town hall business is not static and needs will continue to change. Some requirements cannot be foreseen but must still be accommodated in the town’s financial plan. One of these is the need for new niches in the town’s cemetery. In Spain, the cemetery does not have graves as such and now €256,662 is needed to extend the current facilities. An additional budget allocation has been made for two new emergency vehicles at a cost of €80,000 and payment of fines at a cost of €901,057. The other modifications relate to projects that were included in the budget initially but are proving to be more expensive than originally planned. The purchase of 23 electric vehicles to renew the town’s fleet, overtime pay and new software have placed additional demands on the town’s budget.

Arroces de Torrevieja From 4th to the 10th March it will be rice week in Torrevieja. A number of different establishments are taking part and are offering a selection of menus that include some traditional rice dishes. This is not the same as the tapas route, as the restaurants are offering full menus with starters and sweets but with rice dishes as the main course. The prices being charged vary from €18 to € 30 with the majority being around €20 to €25. Many offer a choice of sweet and starter but only one rice main course. However, different rice dishes are available on different days with different menus being available at the weekend. The weekend menu is sometimes more expensive than that offered during the week. Altogether 22 different establishments are taking part in what is the 7th event of this type. Forest fire prevention plan The councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, has presented the Local Plan for the Prevention of Forest Fires (PLPIF) in Orihuela. This fulfils the obligation for all municipalities in the Valencian Community with forest lands to have this type of plans. "Within this Local Plan we analyse the possible risks that exist in our areas of forest land to see how best to minimise the impact in the event of a fire," Valverde reported. The councillor was accompanied by Sergio Martinez, technician in charge of drafting the project. "This plan is part of the initiatives that from Emergency and from the area of Civil Protection are being carried out in terms of prevention to prevent the population may be affected by an emergency," said the Councillor. The Department of Emergencies has previously launched flood emergency plans, the fire plan and is working on the seismic risk plan.

Orihuela has an area of 36,547 hectares (ha). 9,774 ha (27 percent) are forest lands. The PLPIF complements the existing Forest Fire Prevention Plan for the Crevillente Forest Demarcation, where it is located. A total of 84 actions have been

programmed, some aimed at preventing the causes and others at preventing the spread. The budget of the plan for its 15 years of validity is € 504,800.64. The zones in greater danger, according to the analysis of danger of forest fires, correspond with the areas that are in

contact with large forestry, such as "the Urbanisation of Montepinar, Urbanisation of Pinar de Bonanza, the urban centre of Arneva and several urbanisations on the coast as Las Colinas, Las Ramblas Golf Course Urbanisation, Castillo de Don Juan or Campoamor Urbanisation", explained Martínez. For the elaboration of the PLPIF of Orihuela, advanced territorial analysis tools have been used, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). With the help of these computer programs it has been possible to divide the municipal area into sectors for the planning of the necessary actions to minimise the risk of fire and the possible damage produced if it occurred. The plan pays special attention to the protection of the population and urban centres. An exhaustive inventory and cataloguing of the urban centres that are in contact with forest stands has been carried out.

TOWNS GET TOGETHER TO PROTECT THE FUTURE Forty different towns met on 1st March in Torrevieja in order to discuss ways of establishing sustainable development in their policies. The day was opened by the mayor for Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, and focussed on Valencia’s intention that all the towns carry out a 17 point plan. Torrevieja is already someway towards fulfilling many of the objectives expressed by the regional government. It already has a policy of re-vegetation, regeneration of native flora and sustainable tourism. One of the town’s

flagship policies is that of marketing Torrevieja not only as a venue for tourists seeking the sun and sea but also for those interested in the salt industry, fishing and wildlife. The 17 point programme was first launched at the summit for Sustainable development which took place in September 2015. At this event, Spain, along with other member states, approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 goals to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice and

address climate change. During the morning the different towns looked at ways in which they might work together sharing policies and practice in order to achieve the goals. The round table discussion was attended by the president of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, Rubén Alfaro. At the end of the morning, Councillor Fanny Serrano presented each of the participating town representatives with a salt ship to mark the occasion. Suzanne O’Connell

Continued from page 1 The Costa Blanca People spoke to Francisco Morales, the Guardia Civil officer behind the N332 ‘Driving in Spain’ Facebook page which currently has over 127,000 followers. Francisco said, “This is really important news for British drivers in Spain. After Brexit, UK licences will be categorised differently - they will be non EU licences. Unless both governments sign a bilateral agreement, only UK drivers who carry the required international driving licence will be able to drive here. If British residents here don’t change their licence during this nine month grace period, it could be problematic.” Francisco went on to explain that if a Briton resident in Spain does not exchange his or her licence before the nine month deadline, according to the Royal Decree 81 (Article 21 – Valid licences for driving in Spain) their only option is to apply for an International Driving Permit in the UK which could be a complicated process if you are a Spanish resident.

Motorhomes are back Neighbours complain They are a familiar sight along some of Torrevieja’s coastline. The motorhomes that are parked up, sometimes for weeks on end, are back ready for the spring and summer season. Three years ago it was recommended in a report that signs might be placed in their favourite spots to warn them they could not park in these areas. However, this has not taken place. The motorhomes do not come cheap. They can be valued at anything up to €200,000 and are often extended out with awnings and gazebos. Favourite spots to park include the area between Los Locos

beach and Torre del Moro. Another favourite is la cala de Los Trabajos next to Los Locos beach and along the avenida de Soria, next to the Molino del Agua. The car park in front of La Mata cemetery and by the Albentosapark is another spot that the campervans and motorhomes are drawn to. Their presence can cause bad feeling as there are concerns about environmental damage, local residents can find their views blocked and they can be using local services but without paying any taxes. Local residents argue that little is done to move the motorhome owners on. There is only

World’s best Whisky at Lidl If you’re a whisky drinker, budget supermarket Lidl might not be your first port of call when you’re shopping for the finest bottle. But that could be about to change. Lidl’s Queen Margot Whisky has been crowned the best Scotch whisky. The bottle was crowned at the World Whiskies Awards, which is judged by more than 40 industry

experts. The 8 year blended Scotch whisky is infused with aromas of dried apricot and plum. Lidl says this gives a “rich sweetness and depth of flavour”. It’s been a good week for the alcohol aisle in Lidl, not only scooping up this award, but also taking home the title of Best Own Brand Gin at Gin Magazine’s Icons of Gin awards.

one inspector in charge of a wide area of coastline in the Vega Baja. The tourists using this type of accommodation are largely from Central Europe and, to their credit, are usually environmentally aware. They do tend to leave the area tidy and use it responsibly. They like these areas because there is some lighting, they are relatively close to amenities and residential areas and they feel safe. Their owners can be very responsible in the way they look after the environment and are legitimately staying for short periods of time in each location. Those who are a fan of this kind of lifestyle point out that Spain has few authorised places where they can carry out their types of tourism and this is the only option if they do not want to pay out the significant amounts demanded by some private sites. Some aspects of their stay are legal. They can park but should not camp and they should not set out tables, chairs and other furniture. However, as things stand they will remain a presence on Torrevieja’s coastline. Suzanne O’Connell

about sports bar The sports bar on calle Pedro Lorca is annoying local residents due to what they claim, is a number of infringements of local laws. They say they have been asking the town hall for the past two years to do something about the bar where gambling and the use of slot machines takes place. They are angry about the doors being kept open at all hours and horse racing and greyhound racing being evident in the entrance to the establishment. They say that the visibility of the gambling contravenes legislation approved in 2015. According to those living nearby, there is constant noise coming from the bar both from the machines that are there and the customers that use them. A television is often placed outside and they claim that the notice

restricting the entrance of minors is not positioned correctly. In spite of their complaints, the sports bar is registered to provide this kind of entertainment and is licensed to open from 6am until 3am. The bar complies with legislation as far as soundproofing, safety and accessibility is concerned. Other checks had not indicated a problem with the use of the television externally or the doors remaining open. The number of these sports and gaming bars has increased significantly in recent years and there are four main operators. There are a number of restrictions surrounding them, but none of these have been successfully used by the local residents to get the bar managers to modify behaviour. Suzanne O’Connell

MAKING YOU VISIBLE Once again, members of the N332 team will be on hand to answer your driving law questions at the Expo Torrevieja. The event is taking place on the 9th and 10th of March at the International Auditorium in Torrevieja, bringing together local businesses and associations under one roof. As well as being on hand to answer your questions, N332 will also be highlighting the need to be seen on the roads, with the campaign, “MAKING YOU VISIBLE”. Last year, one in five people who lost their lives on the high capacity roads of Spain did so outside their vehicle. In total, some 60 people were killed whilst involved in some kind of emergency which they were dealing with, whether that involved placing warning triangles on the road, or just because they hadn´t been seen. We have also seen an increase in the number of pedestrians and cyclists involved in serious or fatal incidents, again, some of these road users were not seen in time. As part of the MAKING YOU VISIBLE campaign, N332, along with mobility scooter specialists, mabeq.com, will be giving away high visibility vests throughout the weekend, provided thanks to the support of the sponsors of the N332 project. However, there´s a catch! At 08:00 on both Saturday and Sunday morning we will post a question on the N332.es website, and then you have to visit us

at the expo to give us the answer. We will also ask you to have your photograph taken with us, as the campaign is all about being seen. Don´t worry, the questions won’t be too difficult, but you will have to be quick as it is as we only have 50 to give away each day. But that´s not all, for the first 50 people who bring along this page from the Costa Blanca People each

day, you can pick up another very special gift, as we also have 50 calendars to give away each day which feature images of the Guardia Civil, supporting the APANEE charity. Finally, because we hope that nobody will leave empty handed from the expo, we also have the new and exclusive N332 car stickers to give away, so you too can show your support for the project by displaying the sticker on your car, bike, or anywhere you choose.

The International Cofradia needs you The processions in Torrevieja during Semana Santa (Holy Week) attract thousands of residents and visitors to the town to witness these spectacular events chronicling the Passion of Christ. This year, 2019, will be the 14thyear that the Paso of Jesus in the Garden of Olives (Cofradia de Nuestro Padre Jesús en la Oración del Huerto de los Olivos) has been taken through the streets of Torrevieja during Semana Santa by the International Cofradia. The International Cofradia is a group made up mostly but not entirely of British ex pats. This is a fantastic opportunity to participate in one of the most important events in the local Spanish cultural and religious calendar. Those of us who have taken the paso through the streets of Torrevieja in the processions during Holy Week will testify to the fact that it is a unique experience and one which all of us will remember for the rest of our lives. You do not have to be super fit to take part; most of our members are retired and certainly not in the ‘first flush of youth’. For many years we carried the paso on our shoulders, a task which needed around 100 costaleros but falling numbers have meant that for the last two years a smaller group has pushed the paso and we expect to be doing the same this year. However it is still a fantastic occasion to be part of and each year we welcome new members to take part. If you are interested in taking part please contact David McLachan on 865 661 937 or Paul Mutter on 671 218 285 who can give you a further details and come along to our first meeting which is detailed below. The first official meeting of the International Cofradia will be on Thursday,

March 14th. This is principally for registration of existing and new members. We will then be meeting on Thursday March 28th, Thursday April 4th and again on April 11th when the paso will be taken down to be parked behind the

If you are an existing member please make sure you come and attend the first meeting or at least please let either David McLachan or Paul Mutter know whether you will be able to participate this year or not. Why not bring a friend along to

GBP / EUR UPDATE Once again, Brexit was the dominant influence on sterling but this week it rose on what was considered good news by investors. The planned vote on the Brexit deal was delayed to the 12th March but the market reacted more to the detail of those votes. If the deal doesn’t pass, parliament will vote the following day on whether to rule out a no-deal scenario. If that isn’t acceptable to MPs, the default option will be to leave the EU without a deal, but investors were more caught up in the following vote, which allows MPs to vote on whether Article 50 should be extended by three months to avoid a ‘no deal’ happening. This proved very positive for the pound. Early in the week, sterling has climbed to the highest point against the Euro since May 2017 over the increasing likelihood of a Brexit delay. After Theresa May’s address to parliament, the pound touched a 21-month high against the euro. As the week progressed, the pound was a top performer over the week, month and year to date, and strengthened 3.6% from its levels on New Year’s Eve. The ongoing

strength was attributed to a report in the Evening Standard that the EU would prefer a much longer, 21month delay. The postponement story was worth an average of 0.6% to the pound. It took half a cent each off the euro and the US dollar. By the end of the week the optimism had settled a little and there may be more volatility as the date of the vote approaches but for now the pound has benefited from the rare good news on the Brexit front. The euro had nothing to respond to the flow of optimism from the UK. Data relating to the slowdown continued; euro zone manufacturing activity went into reverse for the first time in over five years last month as trade war worries, slowing global growth and Britain’s imminent departure from the European Union hit demand, a survey found. While the euro had little response to the pound, it gather some bullish momentum against the US dollar. At the end of the month, EUR/USD was trading above 1.14 and investors appear to believe it may have further to go.

How to trace your lost pension funds EXPATS

COULD BE MISSING OUT ON FUNDS FOR THEIR RETIREMENT IF THEY HAVE LOST THE DETAILS OF OLD PENSION PLANS.

M

any people come to us asking about lost pensions. Fortunately, there are several ways we can find them. It’s not always easy to keep track of a pension, especially if you’ve been in more than one scheme or have changed employer throughout your career. But, it’s important that you do claim your pension, so the sooner you trace a lost pension, the better. Many expats who have worked in the UK before emigrating lose details of what company pensions they have built up because they haven’t told their former employers their overseas address. Others simply forget about retirement plans they paid into during previous jobs. It is a major issue. Millions of us have paid into a personal pension, often only for a few years. Although pension trustees have a duty to keep in touch with members, with an ever mobile workforce it is easy to lose details, or for people to decide it is not worth worrying about.” Experts say Britain is heading for a “lost pensions” crisis with a predicted £750bn of dormant pensions by 2050 that could deprive people of thousands of pounds in retirement, based on government estimates. If you think you may have a “Forgotten” pension pot, or indeed a Frozen or Deferred pension, then we may be the people to help you trace this money. We would be happy to sit down with you and look at your options. Please give us a call on 965 704 338 or email us at:

Saint Patrick’s day on the Costa Blanca

Summer is on its way, but in Cabo Roig, the first sign of summer is not the swallows returning from their winter migration but the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. In addition to the parade this year there will be a craft market both Saturday and Sunday in the car park beside the Medical Centre. Those who arrive early will probably get parking around La Regia park opposite El Gato, on the side streets of La Regia and in old Cabo Roig near the beaches. The festivities will begin at 1pm with a big shoot out at the Depot although some will forgo the wild west show to get themselves seated by 2pm on the terraces of the bars and restaurants around the two-kilometre parade route. The best spots are usually found on the medical centre end of the “strip”. As Saint Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday this year there will be free face painting for children aged between 0 to 100. You can have shamrocks or tricolours painted on your face or forehead but don’t leave it too late, all the best face painting will start at 1pm in three different locations between Milo’s and Peter Pan’s, near Banco Sabadell and over the road at the Depot. It is reported that Anna and Elsa from Frozen will be doing some of the face painting in person. This Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is the ninth to be held in Cabo Roig and it has become world famous, so famous in fact that it is the best in Spain and mainland Europe and the ninth best in the world according to Google. The 2019 parade will be bigger and more spectacular than ever before. Some think that the parade “just happens,” but it doesn’t. Local businesses contribute their time, talents, efforts and €15,000 to make this fun event happen each year. They run fundraising events all year around to build up the kitty so as this happy day is a reality. Each year, Sofia Alvarez (councillor for Tourism and foreign residents in the Orihuela town hall) organizes the necessary permissions, police assistance, barriers, stage and more. Her help and support of the event is vital to its success. This year’s Grand Marshall is world-famous Irish Boxer and film star, Big Joe Egan, originally from Ringsend in Dublin.

Welcome to Mallorca Mallorca (or Majorca) is a Mediterranean island of stunning natural beauty. Its early reputation for cheap mass tourism emerged from the large scale developments on the island’s south west coast. Early resorts which remain popular today include Magaluf and Palma Nova to the west of Palma and Can Pastilla to the east. In more recent times Mallorca has reinvented itself with an emphasis on more upmarket tourism with visitors encouraged to explore the island’s beautiful coastline and interior. The east coast of Mallorca consists of more than fifty secluded coves of enormous beauty. Cala Millor or Cala Bona are ideal bases from which to discover this region. Best Time to Visit The weather in Mallorca is pretty much what you would expect from one of the Mediterranean’s premier beach holiday destinations. Every summer millions of tourists from all over Europe fly into Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport in anticipation of long, hot days and lovely, warm nights. They won’t be disappointed. The peak summer months see temperatures rising above the 30ºC in the afternoons with rainfall highly unlikely other than the odd summer storm which is usually most welcome after enduring such heat. From the rainfall and temperature figures presented below you’ll see that July and August are both the driest and the hottest months. They are also the most expensive for holidays and the busiest time for all the resorts. If you are flexible on travel dates and don’t need to be on holiday during these peak months then I’d strongly recommend that you consider visiting Mallorca on either side of them. Personally I love

being on the island at anytime in May or June as well as during the month of September. It’s still busy with plenty going on all over the island but without the scorching summer temperatures and the masses of people tied to school holidays from all over the continent. Daytime remains really nice and warm with pleasant evenings for dining outdoors. Things to do Palma de Mallorca: In their haste to get to their holiday accommodation and to stay there so many visitors never find time to visit the capital of Mallorca which is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities. Some of the highlights of the city include the La Seu Cathedral which took almost 400 years to build, the Royal Palace of La Almudaina and the circular Bellver Castle which overlooks the Bay of Palma. Time permitting it’s well worth taking a full-day vintage train journey from Palma to Soller. Serra de Tramuntana: This the mountain range runs parallel with Mallorca’s north-west coast. Its landscape has been recognised by UNESCO which named it a World Heritage Site. The rugged terrain and mountain peaks present quite a contrast with the gentle east coast. It’s well worth renting a car driving the stunning northwest coast from Alcudia in the north to Andratx in the south. Highlights of the journey include the Monastery at Lluc, Soller, Deia and Valldemossa. Caves of Drac: Located near Porto Cristo on the east coast, the Caves of Drach are one of the island’s top tourist attractions. There’s a large lake inside the caves where a short classical music performance takes place during visits.

More Beautiful Blossom Due to popular demand more trips to the beautiful blossom fields in Murcia have been arranged. Spain is an incredibly beautiful country and much of this scenic countryside isn’t as far away as you might think. This trip will head once again to the area of Cieza in the Murcia region which is famed for its farming of peaches and olives and at the time of this trip, the peach trees will be in full bloom, which is a sight to behold.

peach orchards there will be the opportunity to sample some of the local olives and savoury treats synonymous with the locality in a tasty light lunch. The return journey includes the chance to explore the town of Cieza, taking in its heritage and culture as well as checking out the local shops or bars...and all for just 25e per person! Book now with Begona, the trip will take place on 18th March. Places are being booked quickly, so please call Begona on 622 188 772 to book your places and arrange a pick up location.

New wine tasting tour and brewery visit

The first trip to the blossom orchards took place recently and everyone had a wonderful time exploring the countryside and enjoying the wonderful rustic lunch provided by the farm. Organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo, the this tour is the perfect way to discover the wider region and a hidden gem. Begona has been hosting trips and tours for several years and has helped hundreds of people to enjoy a taste of the ‘real Spain’. The journey will take you from your chosen local pick up point along a scenic route offering scenes from some of the most gorgeous countryside in this part of Spain. This will culminate in the arrival at the Peach orchards, which will be in full bloom offering the most spectacular sight. Following a tour of the

Places are also still available for the new and exciting Bodega but a beer brewery tour to the bodega Casa de la Ermita, in Jumilla which will take place on 25th March and 14th April. The tour begins with your pick up from one of the local meeting points and travel to the Bodega, stopping for breakfast on the way, which is included in the price. Once in Jumilla the group will be given a guided tour of the old quarter of the city in English by a local guide. On arrival at Casa de la Ermita you will visit the onsite wine museum and then continue into the brewery which makes artesian beers. The tours will be followed by a three-courselunch of traditional local and regional dishes and, of course, a chance to taste the wines of the Bodega before ending the day at the Casa de la Ermita shop, where you can purchase the delights on offer. Due to the interest generated by her trips, Begona has created an email group to keep everyone informed on new dates, tour information such as pick-up locations, travel times and also on longer trips organised as part of her ‘Discover the Real Spain’ programme. Bookings for tours can also be made on-line through this group. If you would like to be added, please send your email address to: viajesrealspain@gmail.com

Should we tell her?

Chivalry is dead

We are worried our friend is dating an unscrupulous man. It came to light when a mutual friend told us that this guy is well-known for conning his conquests out of money. He quickly manipulates the situation to move in to his victims’ homes, eventually helping himself to their bank accounts, and then disappearing. He’s been in prison many times in his life apparently. My friend is 65, and this man is about 50 and is charm itself. I am not sure she’d believe us but should we tell her?

I met a guy online who I dated for a few months. I thought things were good and heading in the right direction, but suddenly he stopped answering my messages and telephone calls. Unfortunately I never knew where he lived, so I couldn’t go to his house. Initially I was worried he’d met with an accident or something, but a friend says she saw him go in to the shop where she works.

You can say the information came from someone you don’t know, so you don’t know how valid it is, however you feel you have a duty as her friend, to tell her. This should hopefully at least put her on her guard. The rest is then down to her. Too many women fall victims of these types of men and live to regret it, however if they’d received just one whisper in their ear, it may have been enough. It would be worse if she finds out you knew and didn’t tell her.

There is such a modern phrase now, as ‘being ghosted’. Apparently it means to drop someone and disappear from their lives. Doing this of course is actually very rude, disrespectful and cowardly, but it seems this is quite the norm in the modern online dating world. If your friend has seen him, you can assume he has not met with a terrible accident, and has unfortunately dropped you without wanting to have the awkward conversation. Pity the other women he dates and forget about him. You’ve had a lucky escape.

Spain is the world’s healthiest country Spain has surpassed Italy as the world's healthiest nation. That's according to this year's edition of the Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, which ranks 169 countries based on factors that contribute to overall health. Six of the top 10 countries were in Europe, with Italy ranking second, Iceland (third), Switzerland (fifth), Sweden (sixth) and Norway (ninth). In contrast, the United States didn't even break into the top 30, ranking at number 35, one notch worse than last year.

The top 10 healthiest nations, according to the report, were: 1- Spain 2- Italy 3- Iceland 4- Japan 5- Switzerland

6- Sweden 7- Australia 8- Singapore 9- Norway 10- Israel

To come up with the rankings, Bloomberg researchers graded nations based on several factors including life expectancy, while giving penalties for health risks such as obesity and tobacco use. Environmental factors like access to clean water and sanitation were also taken into account. Spain has the highest life expectancy at birth among European Union nations and is expected to overtake Japan by 2040 to become the country with highest lifespan in the world. The Mediterranean diet is partly responsible for Spain’s high ranking on the list. Researchers say eating habits may provide clues to health levels enjoyed by Spain and Italy, as a “Mediterranean diet, supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts,

had a lower rate of major cardiovascular events than those assigned to a reduced-fat diet,” according to a study led by the University of Navarra Medical School. But Spain’s excellent National Health Service was also credited with putting Spain in the top spot. "Primary care is essentially provided by public providers, specialised family doctors and staff nurses, who provide preventive services to children, women and elderly patients, and acute and chronic care," according to the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies 2018 review of Spain, noting a decline the past decade in cardiovascular diseases and deaths from cancer, noted Bloomberg in the report. The results mirror other research that came out last fall looking at future life expectancies in 195 countries and territories around the world. In that study, published in the international medical journal The Lancet, Spain also ranked first, with a projected life expectancy of 85.8 years by 2040. The United States ranked 64th. A number of studies have shown the Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease and may have numerous other health benefits, including reduction of LDL, or "bad," cholesterol, as well as a decreased risk of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and cancer. One study published in British Journal of Nutrition found that following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a 25 percent lower chance of death from any cause. People in Spain also benefit from a national health system focused on preventative care, according to a review by The European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, which praised its "principles of universality, free access, equity and financial fairness." Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 27 of the 30 unhealthiest nations in the Bloomberg rankings. Haiti, Afghanistan and Yemen were also in the bottom 30.

How different generations choose a home

irst time buyers, relocating to a new area, looking for a home to enjoy retirement in, are all great reasons why people buy homes. How they approach this task does vary between the generations. Each generation has its own priorities. First time buyers focus more on price, obviously. They care more about the diversity of the area, local transport, and accessibility. This type of buyer is 68% more likely to purchase an apartment, linked or semidetached property. Relocating to a new area is usually the middleaged buyer. They are on the hunt for not just a lovely home, but a better way of life. Price can be a little more flexible at this stage, however they tend to know more about what’s important to them in their next home. They usually know what they’re looking for, and have put together a list of priorities. 21% of these buyers said, it was very important that they earn a rental income from their property. This type of buyer is more open-minded withthe style of the

home, and usually go for a semi-detached, duplex (townhouse) or detached property. Senior buyers make up a huge percentage of property sales. They tend to want to downsize, however are always looking where they can squeeze their family in when visiting. 64% Say location was important. Proximity to amenities, together with the desire to be within a specific hospital district or wellness centre, was their number one reason for moving. 88% Say something low maintenance, was high on their wish list. These types of buyers usually choose a single storey home, or something that’s a little easier to access, with an easily maintained garden, if any garden at all. On the whole, most buyers think they’re settling in for the long haul, however on average they’re in for about 7-8 years, then they’re looking to upsize, downsize or relocate and start the whole process all over again, somewhere else! Bingeworthy Box Sets The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting is an American supernatural horror anthology web television series created and directed by Mike Flanagan for Netflix, produced by Amblin Television and Paramount Television. The series is a re-imagining of classic horror literature, including The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. The first season, titled The

Haunting of Hill House, featured an ensemble cast consisting of Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Victoria Pedretti as the adult counterparts of the Crain siblings. Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas portray parents Olivia and Hugh Crain, with Timothy Hutton appearing as an older version of Hugh.

The first season was released on October 12, 2018, on Netflix. It received positive reviews, with many calling it an "effective ghost story" and praising the acting and directing. In February 2019, Netflix renewed the series for a second season. The second season is titled The Haunting of Bly Manor and is based on James' novel, and is set to be released in 2020. In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their children – Steven, Shirley, Theodora, Luke, and Nell – move into Hill House to

renovate the mansion in order to sell it and build their own house, designed by Olivia. However, due to unexpected repairs, they have to stay longer, and they begin to experience increasing paranormal phenomena that results in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house. Twenty-six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after tragedy strikes again, and they are forced to confront how their time in Hill House had affected each of them.

NEW THRILLER ... ITV’S NEW TENSE THRILLER CHEAT This is the new ITV thriller that’s going to have the nation completely gripped ... Spring is around the corner and so is a brand new season of addictive TV, including ITV’s tense new thriller Cheat. Starring former Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly and Three Girls’ Molly Windsor, the chilling four-part drama follows the story of a university professor and student who go head-tohead over a case of academic deception.

Here’s everything we know about the series so far ...

WHAT’S IT ABOUT? At the heart of the drama is a dangerous relationship between Leah (played by Katherine Kelly), university lecturer and mentor to Rose (played by Molly Windsor), which spirals out of control when a seemingly straightforward case of academic deception takes a dark turn. According to an ITV synopsis, the

ensuing investigation triggers a devastating sequence of events that threaten to engulf them both. “With two fiercely intelligent minds unwilling to back down, Cheat will keep audiences guessing from the start,” it reads. “Cheat will] explore just how far we’re prepared to stand up for what we believe, and at what cost,” the teaser continues. Head of Drama at ITV, Polly Hill, commented: “It’s a tense and taut thriller

packed with an intriguing plot that promises to have audiences on the edge of their seat.”

WHO STARS IN CHEAT? Corrie fans will definitely recognise Katherine Kelly, who played feisty Becky McDonald until 2012. Recently, she’s starred in Doctor Who spin-off Class and TV series Strike Back. Meanwhile Molly Windsor previously starred in 2009’s The Unloved, and played the lead role in BBC One’s acclaimed drama Three Girls. The cast also includes Humans

Tom Goodman-Hill, Unforgotten’s Lorraine Ashbourne and comedian Adrian Edmondson.

WHEN DOES IT AIR? According to ITV, Cheat will start on Monday 11th March-Thursday 14th March, every evening at 9pm.

Spain launches new counter-terrorism strategy

Interior Minister Fernándo Grande-Marlaska in Congress

The Spanish Interior Ministry has released a new counter-terrorism strategy thlat targets jihadist terrorism, focusing specifically on former members of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda who are returning from conflict zones, prisons where petty criminals become radicalised, and home-grown terrorist cells such as the one that perpetrated the 2017 Barcelona attack. The document, which was published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), also argues that “the rise of identity-based extremism with exclusionary positions” is “one of the most worrying issues today” because it is “leading to

violent dynamics and support for terrorism among minority sectors of our society.” It adds that the problem could “increase in the context of financial crisis.” But the primary focus is on the fight against jihadist terrorism, particularly addressing the return of former ISIS and Al Qaeda fighters. Most of these jihadists left their homes principally in Madrid, Catalonia and Spain’s North African exclave cities Ceuta and Melilla to fight in conflict zones like Syria and Iraq. Given the United States’ decision to end its military mission in Syria, it is expected that many of them will now return to Spain. To manage this threat, the Interior Ministry proposes trying to send the former fighters to prison upon their return. But counter-terrorism sources recognize this will be difficult, given that currently they can only be prosecuted for joining a terrorist organisation. To overcome this, the counterterrorism strategy proposes incorporating evidence provided by the troops of other countries, be it DNA samples or documents, into court proceedings in Spain. This would allow Spanish prosecutors to charge the former fighters with participating in specific acts of terrorism, something which up to now has not been

possible because of a lack of evidence. Germany has taken a similar approach, recently jailing a woman who let a child slave die while she was in an area controlled by ISIS. According to the document, more than 230 Spanish citizens or residents left the country to fight in conflict zones with terrorist groups. Of those, approximately one fourth have died in combat and 20 percent have returned to Spain. The counter-terrorism strategy also takes aim at prisons in Spain, which have proven to be centres for radicalisation. In addition to the 140 inmates who have been imprisoned for their involvement in jihadist activities, another 120 prisoners jailed for common crimes like robbery and drug trafficking have shown signs of radicalisation or completely assumed radical ideology, according to the Interior Ministry. To address this threat, the plan aims to provide “special attention to penitentiary centres” and open the door to increasing the number of guards. It also suggests changes to deradicalization programs which have had only modest success, with fewer than 15 inmates signed up.

PANCAKE TUESDAY

Pancake Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras (which is French for Fat Tuesday), is the last day of feasting before Lent begins on the following day, Ash Wednesday. It’s so called due to the custom of eating pancakes on this day, a tradition that comes from a time when any remaining rich foods were eaten on the day before Lent to use them up and fasting begins. Here are two recipes for pancakes for you to enjoy today - one traditional, and one dieting friendly. TRADITIONAL PANCAKES 125g/4oz Plain Flour Pinch of Salt 1 Egg 300ml/½pt Milk Oil for frying Sieve flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well in the centre of the flour, break in the egg and add about a third of the milk. Beat well, gradually pouring in the rest of the milk and drawing in the flour to make a smooth batter. Pour batter into a jug and allow to stand

for about 30 minutes. Brush frying pan with oil. When the pan is hot, give the batter a stir before pouring a thin layer onto the pan. Fry until golden brown. Turn and fry the other side until brown also. Stack pancakes on a large plate, as they are cooked. Fill with fresh fruit and drizzle with maple syrup, or spread with butter, lemon juice and a sprinkle of sugar. Enjoy! SLIMMING PANCAKES 80g Ready Brek 100ml Milk 3 Eggs 2 tsp Vanilla Extract 2 tbsp Granulated Sweetener Low Calorie Cooking Spray Mix all ingredients together. Spray your frying pan with Low Calorie Cooking Spray and heat gently. Drop in small dollops to make mini pancakes. Allow to cook through before gently turning. Delicious with sweetened quark (queso fresco batido) and fruit.

MILESTONE FOR BENIDORM PALACE

Benidorm Palace will greet its 16 millionth customer this year after 42 years and over 3,500 shows, announced its owner Vicente Climent. The huge cabaret venue and restaurant burst onto the tourism scene on 12th July, 1977 with a show by a Brazilian ballet company. Climent - who was 30 when the venue opened - took over after 13 years and his first commissioned show was a landmark performance with Soviet dancer Rudolf Nureyef - a night Finestratborn musician Climent describes as incredible. “Tickets sold out months

before the show, and the keenest fans went along in the early morning to watch this world-class performer rehearsing,” Climent reveals. With seating for 1,600 spectators per performance and practically every single show being a sell-out, the current owner estimates that this summer, on the 42nd anniversary of Benidorm Palace, customer numbers will break the 16 million barrier. The venue has hosted the Spanish Song Festival and the Miss Spain finals, as well as major international conferences. Benidorm Palace’s complete renovation in 2005 saw it hosting all

types of music and dance events, magic shows, comedy nights and acrobat displays in an eclectic programme that is constantly expanding. “There are no cabaret halls like this left in Europe, and we need them,” Climent said in a recorded interview destined for Benidorm’s Tourism Museum. “What else is there left to see on the stage at Benidorm Palace? Everything we can possibly put on, that’s what and for as long as we can, because my daughter will take over running it when I stop, then my grandchildren will, so it’s always going to stay in the family,” Climent concludes.

Food & drink expiry That bacon you opened last weekend won't stay fresh in your fridge forever. In fact, there are set guidelines for how long you should keep food and drinks before they go bad. First, make sure your refrigerator is set at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, which is the temperature recommended by the USDA. If the label has a “sell by” date, consume the food item accordingly. It's worth noting, though, that a label's “sell by” date only indicates when the product will be of “optimal quality,” according to the Natural Resources Defence Council. You can probably still safely eat something that's just past its expiration date. Here's how long your favourite foods can survive in your fridge after you open them. Alcohol Beer: 1 day if kept tightly covered Wine, red and white: 3-5 days (Take red wines out of the fridge an hour before serving to bring it back to room temperature.) Condiments Barbecue sauce: 4 months Hummus: 1 week Ketchup: 6 months Mayonnaise: 2-3 months after the “sell by” date Mustard: 1 year

Dairy Brie cheese, sold in wrapped wedge: 1 week Cheddar cheese, shredded or sliced, commercially packaged: 57 days Dip, dairy-based: 1 week Eggs: 3-5 weeks

Milk: 1 week after the “sell by” date Mozzarella cheese, fresh, high moisture: 2 weeks Parmesan cheese, commercially grated and packaged: 3 months after the “sell by” date Yoghurt: 7-10 days after the “sell by” date Fruits and Vegetables Apples: 3-4 weeks

Avocados, cut: 2-3 days (To avoid browning, squeeze a few drops of lemon or lime into the flesh and tightly wrap in cling-film or tin foil.) Blueberries: 1-2 weeks Broccoli: 3-5 days Carrots: 2-3 weeks Celery: 1-2 weeks Grapes: 5-7 days (To avoid added moisture, don't wash the grapes until you're ready to consume them.) Lettuce, pre-washed salad mix in bag: 3-5 days Orange juice: 7-10 days Peaches: 3-5 days once ripe Raspberries and strawberries: 2-3 days Meat and Poultry Bacon: 1 week Beef, lamb, pork, and veal: 35 days Ground beef and ground turkey, fresh, cooked: 3-4 days Ground beef and ground turkey, fresh, raw: 1-2 days Lunch meat and ham: 3-5 days Poultry, cooked: 3-4 days Poultry, raw: 1-2 days Seafood Salmon, shrimp and Tuna (including yellow fin), fresh, cooked: 3-4 days Salmon, shrimp and Tuna (including yellow fin), fresh, raw: 1-2 days Sushi: 1 day

HELP VEGA BAJA SUPPORTING FAMILIES & FRIENDS OF PEOPLE WITH DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTIONS Someone’s drug or alcohol addiction can impact on the health and well-being of family and friends, as well as their own. People close to a drug or alcohol user often find themselves caught up in the trauma of addiction; helplessness, isolation and feelings of desperation are very common. Addiction is sometimes referred to as a “family disease” as a family member’s addiction often affects the entire family unit. Family and friends can get so caught up in trying to help and care for the addict that they forget to care for themselves. It can be difficult for loved ones to reach out for support, but it is one of the most important things families can do not only for themselves but also for their addicted loved one. HELP Vega Baja’s new support group – D.A.F.F.S (Drug and Alcohol Friends and Family Support) aims to support family and friends. The group offers a safe place

for support and encouragement for those who are on the same journey. It is an opportunity to meet others to share experiences, learn and grow in understanding of how to support each other including the people who are addicted whilst at the same time remembering to look after everyone’s wellbeing. The meeting is informal and everyone attending understands that everything discussed remains totally confidential. No-one is judged. In addition to the group, a member of the CONNECTIONS Team is also available for one to one emotional support, if needed. Anyone who feels they may benefit from becoming part of the group, can find out more information by calling 693 594 798. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 2pm in the HELP Vega Baja San Miguel Centre.

Darkness Into Light to host second annual walk in Costa Blanca Darkness into Light, the global campaign to promote awareness of suicide and self harm prevention has announced that they have formed a charity partnership with Spanish Charity AFESOL Salud Mental, an organisation that looks after all aspects of mental health. The Darkness Into Light charity walk was formed 11 years ago in Ireland with the charity Pieta House. From its first walk with 400 participants, this has now escalated into a global movement. In 2019, over 200 venues around the globe, with an estimated 200,000 walkers will be taking part in the global walk. Following a good attendance in 2018, the Costa Blanca Darkness into Light team will be hosting the second annual walk, which takes place on Saturday 11the May. The walk will depart from Gogarty's Bar at La Zenia at 5:30am and the 5km silent walk will commence towards Cabo Roig, with a beautiful reflective pause at La Zenia beach, where walkers see the darkness turn into light as

the sun rises. To register for the walk and for more detail: https://www.darknessintolight.ie/event/c

Cancer can be spotted in a single drop of blood A new ultrasensitive diagnostic device could allow doctors to detect cancer quickly from just a droplet of blood or plasma, report researchers. The device could lead to timelier interventions and therefore better outcomes for patients. The “lab-on-a-chip” for liquid biopsy analysis detects exosomes—tiny parcels of biological information tumour cells produce to stimulate tumour growth or metastasize. “Historically, people thought exosomes were like ‘trash bags’ that cells could use to dump unwanted cellular contents,” says lead author Yong Zeng, an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Kansas. “But in the past decade, scientists realised they were quite useful for sending messages to recipient cells and communicating molecular information important in many biological functions. Basically, tumours send out exosomes packaging active molecules that mirror the biological features of the parental cells. While all cells produce exosomes, tumour cells are really active compared to normal cells.” As reported in Nature Biomedical Engineering, the new device’s key innovation is a 3D nano-engineering method that mixes and senses biological elements based on a herringbone pattern commonly found in nature, pushing exosomes into contact with the chip’s sensing surface much more efficiently in a process called “mass transfer.” “People have developed smart ideas to improve mass transfer in microscale channels, but when particles are moving closer to the sensor surface, they’re separated by a small gap of liquid that creates increasing hydrodynamic resistance,” Zeng says. “Here, we developed a 3D nanoporous herringbone structure that

can drain the liquid in that gap to bring the particles in hard contact with the surface where probes can recognize and capture them.” Zeng compares the chip’s nanopores to a million little kitchen sinks: “If you have a sink filled with water and many balls floating on the surface, how do you get all the balls in contact with the bottom of the sink where sensors could analyze them? The easiest way is to drain the water.” When scientists tested the chip’s design using clinical samples from ovarian cancer patients, they discovered

the chip could detect the presence of cancer in a minuscule amount of plasma. Easy and inexpensive The microfluidic chips would also be cheaper and easier to make than comparable designs, allowing for wider and less-costly testing for patients. “What we created here is a 3D nanopatterning method without the need for any fancy nanofabrication equipment— an undergraduate or even a high school student can do it in my lab,” Zeng says. “This is so simple and low-cost it has great potential to translate into clinical settings.”

Researchers could use the chip’s design to detect a host of other disease, Zeng says. “Now, we’re looking at cell-culture models, animal models, and also clinical patient samples, so we are truly doing some translational research to move the device from the lab setting to more clinical applications. “Almost all mammalian cells release exosomes, so the application is not just

limited to ovarian cancer or any one type of cancer. We’re working with people to look at neurodegenerative diseases, breast, and colorectal cancers, for example.” The National Institutes of Health and the University of Kansas Cancer Centre’s Biospecimen Repository Core Facility, funded in part by a National Cancer Institute Cancer Centre Support Grant, funded the work.

Useful keyboard shortcuts George from San Luis asks: Hi Aunty. I recently signed up for a fibre internet connection but I am now being told by the company that they won’t be installing the cables into our urbanisation until September. I simply cannot wait that long as my current ADSL is driving me mad because it is so slow. I was told by a friend that I should get a 4G router from Vodafone for about the same price as my current Movistar internet which is €30 a month and apparently this will be better. What is 4G and how is it different from fibre and ADSL. Aunty Says: Hi George. In a nutshell, 4G internet works exactly the same as the SIM card in your phone except the SIM card plugs into a special router with no wires. ADSL and fibre both need a cable running to your house. ADSL uses the slow and old fashion copper phone wire, whereas fibre is fast and uses a special type of rare glass only found in outer space. I have Vodafone 4G internet and it is fast, reliable and reasonably priced, but you will need a mobile phone contract to sign up. If you are already with Movistar then maybe speak with them as they offer a similar package. Ken via email asks: Good evening Aunty, I hope that you can help me. I am using Apache home office and a Canon Pixma printer. As you can see from the attached, whenever I print this sort of table, it spreads the lines into double spacing. Do you know how I can solve this? Aunty Says: Hello Ken. The example you sent

I am not sure how to modify this in OpenOffice but you’ll find a wonderful support community via a Google search. A quick fix might be changing font and see if this resets it. ALERTCOPS App gets an update Hopefully, if you have a mobile phone, you will have already at least heard of the ALERTCOPS app, an official application launched by the Spanish government, even better you will have downloaded it and registered already. If not, then it´s about time you did, but if you have, it is due an update. With this updated version, one of the developments allows you to share your location information with your own private list of recipients, not only the emergency services. As before, you can also send pictures and videos with the report, but this time to your private list if you choose. Another improvement is the option to receive security alerts based on your own location, which can be updated on a frequency of your choosing, and you can have a chat conversation with the

operators in your own language. However, if you are already a registered user of the app, whether you have had to use it before or not, you will need to uninstall your current version before installing the update. The app can be downloaded for both Apple and Android phones and, once registered with your personal details such as your NIE, then left on your mobile, hopefully never having to be used.

Since its launch, the app has been praised for helping to locate numerous vulnerable and missing people, and allowing reports of both domestic violence and bullying to be made in confidence. If you are a victim or witness of a crime, the app puts you in touch with the emergency services immediately, where you can chat to the operators, send photos and videos and you will get an immediate response.

The Plaza Golf Society February sunshine provided ideal conditions for The Plaza Golf Society visit to Vistabella. 30 players competed but one in particular fell a little short and heads off to practice ahead of our next event so good luck with that Bob Rankin scoring a lowly 17pts! The 2's pot saw some familiar faces picking up 15 euros each, well done to Liz Sully, Colin Wilson, Dodgy Declan Crowley and Callum Hitcham. Nearest the pins sponsored by The Plaza Society again featured some usual suspects namely Callam x 2, Colin Wilson, Phil De Lacy and a new name with Margaret Woodhall not only hitting one but achieving the best Ladies score of the day with 36 pts off 30 handicap. We had two guest prizes today and in 2nd place was Daniel Spino scoring 31 pts

off 7 losing out comfortably to Mike Willetts scoring a great 38pts off 14 and who becomes a full playing member from now on. Silver division was a close run thing with Phil 'Russell' Sulky 3rd with 34 pts off 13 losing out on countback to Ian Woodhall off 15 behind best Lady Margaret's 36 pts off 30. Gold saw 3rd place for Big Tony Smale with 34 pts off 7, Callum 2nd with 34 off 1 well behind best score of the day posted by John Morrison with a brilliant 39 pts off 10. A couple of players have caught the attention of the handicap secretary so watch out at our next event at Hacienda Riquelme 08.03.19 where there are still some places available - log onto our website www.theplazagolfsociety.com to register for this and future events.

San Miguel Golf Society The 2nd round of this season’s Eclectic competition took place at Vistabella, with 40 members and four guests taking part. A shotgun start meant an early rise for all and plenty of work prior to teeing off for the organising committee members. Fine weather and a course in good condition, with pretty slick greens, led to some excellent scoring, not overly affected by some tough pin positions. Roger Brierley (24 handicap) managed the day’s best round, putting together 42 points, closely followed by guest Graham Jordan who, playing off of 7 and never having previously visited the course, returned 41 points. Gerald Turner took the much sought after Abacus prize, receiving a voucher for a free golf lesson from course professional Adrian Rudge for his efforts. Tony Smale (39) and Phil de Lacy (37) took the Gold and Silver category prizes respectively, with them winning having

absolutely nothing to do with their filling the current Captain and Vice-Captain roles. Mick Roscoe goes to the top of the Eclectic leaderboard, beating Bob Eyland on countback, with both having a combined score of 46 points after 2 rounds. Five players are hot on their heels with 45 points. The next round will be played towards the end of April. The day’s winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Chris Hamblett (37), 4th Norman Padmore (38 on CB), 3rd Bob Eyland (38 on CB), 2nd Mick Roscoe (38 on CB) and 1st, with the day’s best score of 42 points, Roger Brierley. Silver Category: 5th Pete Cunniff (33 on CB), 4th Adrian Roberts (33 on CB), 3rd Paddy Diskin (34 on CB), 2nd Kyrre Skarsmoen (34 on CB) and 1st Phil de Lacy with 37 points.

Gold Category: 5th Norman Cahill (36 on CB), 4th Barry Lane (36 on CB), 3rd Graeme Forbes (36 on CB), 2nd Mark Preston (37) and 1st Tony Smale with 39 points. Nearest the pins (sponsored by MoneyCorp): Hole 2 Norman Padmore, Hole 7 Phil de Lacy, Hole 11 Barry Roehrig, Hole 15 John Trehy. Abacus (sponsored by Vistabella golf professional Adrian Rudge): Gerald Turner Best Guests: Graham Jordan (41) beating Paul Dulson (31) in to 2nd place. Our thanks go to all Vistabella staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at La Torre, and on following weeks at El Plantio and Alenda. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Tony Smale a call on 628227687.

ALFIE’S GOLF SOCIETY There were originally 24 members from Alfie’s GS due to play at Vistabella, but due to illness and injuries we had a few late cancellations. The course was in excellent condition, we also found the staff very understanding and helpful with our updated order of play and buggy allocation, so thank you all at Vistabella. With some of the tee boxes moved forward and perfect golfing weather, this was always going to be an enjoyable high scoring day of golf. Our winner of the day in the gold division was Nick Lee with a great score of 42 stableford points. Second place went to Ian Connell with a score of 36 points. The winner of the silver division was Rachel Lee with a score of 40 stableford points. Second place went to Wayne Stevenson with 34 points. Nearest the pin on the 7th – Sponsored by ‘The Street Restaurant’ went to Harry

Gold Division Winner – Nick Lee

Conrad. Nearest the pin on the 15th – sponsored by ‘The Celtic Drop‘ went to Ian Ingledew. Nearest the pin in 2 shots on the 12th sponsored by ’Alfie’s Bar’ went to Harry Conrad. The Blind pairs were won by Jamie Stevenson and Ove Collin. A prize donated by Gary Armstrong for the longest walk went to Magnus Fridgeirson Many thanks to our sponsors, Mike Probert (Costa Blanca Green Fee), also a big thank you to Cat and Liz at Alfie’s Bar for their continued support throughout the year and post-match food. And finally thanks to all the members and guests for supporting Alfie’s Golf Society. Our next outing is Alhama Signature on the 28th March 2019 so get your names down early. Wayne Stevenson Captain

What a difference a week can make! Our bowlers were on better form this week with some good wins despite some very competitive matches. In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls held off San Luis Klingons for a 6-6 draw narrowly winning the shots 93-90. This performance means the Pearls have maintained 4th place in the league. Meanwhile the Diamonds put up a great fight in a very close match against San Luis Trekkers. Some of the rinks won or lost by only 2 or 3 points for a final result of Trekkers 7 points, Diamonds 5 points and the shots were 90-85 to the Trekkers. Unfortunately the Rubies had a bad day against Greenlands Sycamore who won the match 12-0 and 94-71 shots. Results in the Southern League this week included a reversal of fortunes for Quesada Swallows against San Luis Leopards and they lost their match 8-4 points and 94-70 shots in favour of the Leopards. And a reversal of fortunes for the Swifts as well but in the Swifts favour! They were hosted by Montemar Toreadors and in a game of two halves initially in favour of the Toreadors, Swifts proved their tenacity and staying power coming back in the second half of the match to win it 12-0 points and 88-81

shots. In the Winter league, Quesada played away at La Siesta and enjoyed an 8-4 win with the shots 89-79, thus maintaining their 4th place in the league. Meantime, in the Federated 4’s, Quesada Panthers hosted San Miguel Mohawks and in a hard fought match, with several rinks decided on the last one or two ends, managed a draw, 4 points each. A good result for the Panthers and with only 2 games remaining, they’ve moved into 4th place in the league and will be working hard to maintain this - although the Mohawks and Condors are still hot on

their heels. Just a reminder that we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk Report by Dee Stephenson

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY OK! As this week’s ‘senior moment’ award goes to me let’s get it out of the way at the outset. Whilst enjoying a beer on the terrace after Monday’s round it was pointed out that the two young guys at an adjoining table were both golf professionals and that one of them was Jose-Maria’s son! (Olazabel, I immediately thought). Armed with camera, notebook (and one eye on the Costa Blanca Press Awards) I sat down with them for a chat. It turns out that Dutchman, Jim De Hey and Alfonso are both based at Las Ramblas. I went on to tell Alfonso how much I admired his father’s career and also that my wife was currently drawing him together with Seve. A look of bewilderment came over his face but he gave me his email address anyway to send him a copy when it was finished. After studying the address it became apparent that his father is actually Jose-Maria Bueudia, our resident professional at Ramblas! Back to business. Monday’s format was the good old 1-2-3 Waltzer. Taking the limelight, with an impressive 90 points, (the record is 98) were Olga Douglas,

Peter Wickham, Mike Mahony and the fictional Albert. Highlights included Peter getting a 4 for 5 points on the 4th, Mike 4 for 4 on the 16th and Olga 4 for 4 on the last. Pat Cassidy took first place in Wednesday’s stableford with 39 points. In second spot, with 36, was Mike Chapman. Welcome back Mike. Nora Betts took

Pat Cassidy

bronze, on countback from Liz Robertson, with 35 points. Por ultimo, Friday’s ‘counter game’ saw our winners equal the record (set in 2017) score of 106 points. The team consisted of Geoff Biggerstaff, Ron Percival, Peter Radcliffe and Andy McDonald. Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Getting Sacked in the Morning ABBEY ANGLING

RODS & REELS

We fished the 8th round of the Abbey Angling Cup at the El Bosquet Complex Section A on the 26th February. This is the first time we have fished this water for a while and we were not sure how it would fish, with only two pegs producing a decent weight. Coming in first place with 24.560kgs was Dave Hutchinson and in second spot with 18.900kgs was Neil McBirnie and following up in third with a big drop in weight was Richard King with 10.920kgs

Our 9th round of the Winter Championship was also fished on the El Bosquet Complex but on Section B on the 27th February. It was another glorious day especially for the time of year, with temperatures reaching a high of 26 degrees, but the water still remains cold. Neil McBirnie moving up a position from yesterdays match to take the top spot with a very good winter weight of 29.480kgs, then dropping down to 8.560kgs for second place was Alan Smith and coming in third was Bob Rafferty with 8.060kgs 1st Neil McBirnie with 29.480kgs fishing the pole using pellet and bread 2nd Alan Smith with 8.560kgs fishing the pole using pellet and bread 3rd Bob Rafferty with 8.060kgs fishing the pole using corn Due to work in progress at Murcia the water is closed, and until the work is completed all matches booked on there will be fished at the El Bosquet Complex

Guardamar Del Segura Fishing Competition Anglers were pleased to be back fishing at El Paraiso after their 5 week holiday, nice job if you can get it and the latest competition took place on Wednesday 13th February. Twelve anglers took part and after discussion with the owners it was agreed that 12 would be the maximium for all future comps. The draw for pegs took place at 9.00and fishing commenced 10.00 the format here is 2 x 3hour sessions with a 30 minute break for lunch. Seven out of the 12 anglers caught however the fish still seem to be on their holidays, hopefully with the warmer weather approaching the March competition will prove more profitable with bigger catches all round. We introduced a 2 euro entry pairs competition, to give a little more interest which seemed to please everyone, to run in conjuncion with the singles. The result was as follows 1. Russell Davidson Peg 14 13.74kgs ( Meal for 2 + wine in the reataurant) 2. Tony Peg 3 9.88kgs ( 3 days free fishing with snacks ) 3. Martin Jones Peg 13 8.98kgs ( 3 Bottles of wine ) 4. Keko Peg 18 5.26kgs ( Bottle of Cava ) As luck would have it the top 2 were also drawn as pairs partners and ran away with

the spoils. 1. Russell and Tony 23.62kgs 2. Jackie and Martin 13.60kgs The March competition is on Wednesday 13th, and April is Wednesday 10th. The venue is open 10.00 to 17.00 for fishing at a cost of 5 euros but is closed on Mondays until May. Jackie Breslin

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, that’s another Premier League weekend chalked off and what have we actually learned? Not a great deal, really. I mean, we knew Man City like a lot of the ball. We knew Liverpool are at great, great risk of blowing it. We knew Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has restored everything at Man United included coming from behind to win. We knew Chelsea would recall Kepa and, of course, we knew that Tottenham were never really in a title race. Does any of that add up to any kind of funny football news? Probably not. Peppy G called it ‘one of our best ever performances’ which was, frankly, rather odd. No disrespect to Bournemouth whose plan of keeping all eleven players in their own area for 90 minutes nearly got them the point they hoped for, but surely a great City performance would be dominating like that against a team trying to beat them on the front foot? Had City played liked that and beaten, I don’t know, Liverpool or Real Madrid, then yeah, I’ll buy into it being a great performance – a word that gets thrown around like confetti in the modern football world. I’m just surprised that Pep didn’t call it a ‘top, top, top performance’. Riyad Mahrez came off the bench and scored City’s winner. That’s not a bad substitute to be able to call on now, is it? So in two Merseyside derbies this season, Liverpool have managed to fluke a single goal. Sadly for Liverpool, but probably not for the rest of the world who’ve been preparing for the day when Liverpool fans are able to bleat on about winning the league again, a 0-0 draw against their city rivals firmly put the ball back in City’s court. Which is a little ironic, given that if you’d asked Mo Salah to put the ball in City’s court yesterday he’d have

probably hit it straight at Jordan Pickford. All that wind clearly affected King Kloppo’s tactical thinking as he felt James Milner and Adam Lallana were the substitutes to unlock a stubborn Everton defence, leaving Shaqiri and Naby Keita on the bench. It’s no wonder that ballboy gave him a round of applause. It does show us how far United have come under Solskjaer when Paul Pogba can miss a penalty and it hardly gets a mention. Even Graeme Souness failed to bring it up (I think, I admit I stopped listening to him after half an hour and switched over to an American channel). United didn’t even need Pogba’s goal to beat Southampton, they just needed Ole to turn the wheel slightly to the left, make a little tactical tweak and watch Romelu Lukaku have one of those days where he looks more professional footballer than professional boxer. I am not entirely sure Mauricio Pochettino was at Wembley watching the north London derby. What gives him away? His claim that Spurs were better than Arsenal in ‘every area’of their 1-1 draw. There’s no way anyone actually at the match could say that with a straight face. Harry Kane scored again but Spurs failed to win, again. That’s no wins since Kane returned from injury. And, of course, had Yo-Pierre not tapped the weakest spot-kick of the season in the general direction of Hugo Lloris then Arsenal would have walked away with all three points. Arsenal do sit above Chelsea, we should not forget – even though Maurizio Sarri’s men have a game in hand and victory in that would see them back in the Champions League places. They ruined Scott Parker’s big day in the west London derby by winning. Chelsea were a bit meh but then they usually are at the moment and you don’t have to be that good to beat Fulham. Scott Parker, replacing

the sacked Claudio Ranieri, is going to have to learn fast if he is going to perform a miracle at Craven Cottage. It does look like there’s only one relegation spot up for grabs. Sarri spoke in the post-match conference of how he is talking to the club about plans for next season. Oh, Maurizio. You’re not the first and you certainly won’t be the last. There can’t be many that think Crystal Palace will be involved in the latter stages of the relegation dogfight this season. Uncle Roy will have been delighted with the impact Michy-B has made since arriving at Selhurst and his partnership with Wilfried Zaha was particularly fruitful at Turf Moor. Sean Dyche, naturally, was amazed that his team didn’t win – choosing to ignore that fact that Palace scored three and his team didn’t. Brendan Rodgers is back in the Premier League to remind us all what a bit of positivity can bring to the world. I reckon he’s already done the envelope trick to Kasper Schmeichel and all of them had the keeper’s name in them. Jamie Vardy scored the first goal of the reign of the new Leicester manager for the fourth gaffer in a row but it wasn’t enough to stop Watford winning 2-1. Andre Gray got the last minute winner. I didn’t watch Rodgers’ post-match presser but I am guessing ‘delighted’, ‘character’, ‘confidence’ and ‘great opportunity’ came up once or twice. West Ham beat Newcastle. Of course they did. The match was in London and Rafa’s teams don’t do London. I listened to this one on the good old radio. I tell you what, do it once in a while. It’s a treat. Especially if you are a fan of listening to people who know what they are talking about rather than that lot on TV. Brighton really, really needed their win against Huddersfield who would be just as well to concede defeat in their remaining matches now and go on a long holiday.

Your week in sport from 50 to 150 in something like 10 balls.

Having scored a shed full of runs to go 2-1 up in the 4th ODI in the Windies there was talk of handing England the World Cup without the need to play the tournament.

will have been looking down at his boots (and they are a long way down) having given England the chance to have a bat. Eoin Morgan’s team slapped it high over the boundary a world record 24 times. The Windies had set the old record of 23 a matter of days before. Morgan got a ton of his own before Chris Gayle decided that the fourth ODI would be a good one to win and set about chasing down 419 on his own.

Eoin Morgan, a very shrewd captain, can only have concluded that the best way to play down expectations as favourites as to turn in a stinker of a show on Saturday. With the series drawn 2-2, maybe they will play the World Cup after all and maybe, just maybe, some of the spotlight will be moved off the hosts.

Gayle is one of the reasons the Windies could wn the World Cup themselves. On his day, and this was another one of them, he is still the best. He chipped in with 162 from 97 and had Ben Stokes not bowled him it would have been the finest ODI run chase ever seen.

Last Wednesday, they knocked up their 4th score of over 400 with Jos Buttler in imperious form. Buttler smashed 150 from just 77 balls, gliding

England’s stock, as mentioned, was incredibly high on Wednesday night.

Will we still throw willow in general direction of leather in the hope of hitting our way out of trouble?

Yet by the end of Saturday, it had fallen dramatically.

England’s style is thrilling to watch

Maybe, just maybe, it is a cunning ploy by the England ODI side.

For every high of scoring 400 there needs to be a low of getting skittled for 113 otherwise the world will not turn on its correct axis.

when it comes off. There’s just that chance that it might not come off on the right day. Especially if we don’t bat first.

Oshane Thomas did the damage with some fierce short-pitched stuff that had England checking the calendar to see if it was the mid ‘80s.

Will England win the World Cup? Of course we won’t. I’m saying it now to stop it hurting so much when we find a way of being brilliant right up until the moment we utterly collapse at the most unexpected moment.

Chris Gayle didn’t see the point in hanging around and battered 77 from just 27 deliveries meaning the match was over before the actual interval time. Not that the crowd minded, it meant more time for a party. Now, far be it from me to criticise a tactic that has seen England become the most feared ODI team in the world. But, and it is a but, what if we find ourselves 50/6 in a knockout round of the World Cup?

When you list the, er, ‘sports’ that you’d imagine are clean from drugs I would imagine that if you believe bridge to be a sport then you’d expect it to be clean as the proverbial whistle. I am sorry to shatter this illusion, but it’s not. It’s as full of cheats as the rest of them. Norwegian Geir Helgemo was found with synthetic testosterone in his blood stream after a recent highprofile tournament. And there was me still getting over the cocaine cheats of the petanque world. It’s true. Google it.
