Another week, another rescue What sort of person leaves their horse tied up to a palm tree on the side of the road and simply walks away? e’ll never know because this latest rescued horse has no microchip or any other forms of identification. The Policia Local in Albatera got in contact with Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC) on the advice of Seprona from a neighbouring town. This in itself is very reassuring as it demonstrates that there is a growing

New contracts for outstanding projects The company, Acuamed, wants to redraft the projects it was expected to fulfil following their involvement in the construction of the desalination plant in Torrevieja. The redevelopment projects include the Avenida de Diego Ramírez, the construction of the promenade between Los Náufragos and Mar Azul beaches and the path between Ferrís and Rocío del Mar. The works were supposed to have been completed before now and were part of the agreement between the company and the town for the building of the desalination plant. Only one of the projects that were agreed as compensation for Torrevieja for the building of the plant has been completed. The redevelopment of San Roque for five million euros was finished in 2014. Still uncompleted and with no proposals on the table are the Poniente promenade redevelopment and the Acequión channel.

Continued from page 3 caused concern. The earthquake took place in the sea just off the coast of Torrevieja. The two tremors are particularly timely as Torrevieja has just commemorated the historic earthquake which took place on 21st March, 190 years ago. Unlike the two recent earthquakes, this one did cause damage and loss of life. However, experts have pointed out that it can be a good sign if an area experiences a number of smaller tremors. These release some of the pressure that can build up in an area that is susceptible to seismic activity. Torrevieja is situated in one of the most seismically active areas in Spain.

Charity fundraising for AFA On Sunday 7th April at 10am there will be a charity walk or run on behalf of the Alzheimer’s charity AFA. The event will begin from outside the Casino on Torrevieja’s sea front and the cost of entering is €10. If you have not already signed up you can by visiting the association’s headquarters in la Avenida de la Estación, 1 or by registering on the web page http://www.asuspuestos.com/evento/ vi-carreramarcha-solidaria-afatorrevieja. Each participant will receive a bag of goodies including a shirt, hat, dried fruit and a voucher for refreshments after the event is over. You have a choice of completing a run of either 4k or 8k or a walk of 4k. More information is available from the association’s own website on www.afatorrevieja.es

Hackathón for children On Saturday 13th April the first Hackathon event will be held for children in Torrevieja. The event will be targeted at primary-age children and will take place in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre between the hours of 10am and 1pm. Three workshops will be taken by specialist teachers with students arranged into groups according to their level. The teachers are professors of computer engineering at the University of Alicante. The idea is to introduce the youngest to new technologies whilst also encouraging family involvement. The workshops will include programming and robotics. The number of places for each group is limited to 16 and registration can be completed through the web portal http://torreviejaua.eventbrite.es/ The day is also intended to help the young people learn and promote computational thinking that is used daily by IT professionals and can be generally beneficial when it comes to solving problems. It is also being used as a platform to promote the involvement of girls in robotics and engineering. The University is hoping that schools will become involved in participating and the deadline for their cooperation is still open.

interest amongst the authorities regarding animal welfare and the Rescue Centre is seeing more and more cases of law enforcement being willing to act to save an animal knowing there is somewhere safe for them to be. Two young Police Officers met Rod Weeding, Co-Founder of EHCRC, at the Albatera police station to complete the necessary paperwork for her to be transported legally to the safety of the Rescue Centre. Then they took him to the location and with their assistance and that of several other helpful bystanders they eventually loaded her into the horse box. Rod said: “It was quite a struggle trying to coax and encourage her with bits of grass and treats to get into the trailer. There were two elderly guys and two young girls who helped and there were several others bystanders who were interested in what was happening. But it still took over an hour to finally get her into the trailer. The Police were fantastic.” This stunning mare now called Megan is about three years old. She has been seen by the vet Dorothea and at least she is not in foal as that was a worry. Foals are absolutely adorable - but with nearly 120 horses, ponies and donkeys already at EHCRC they really didn’t need any more. Megan is settling into her new surroundings but it is becoming increasingly clear that she has suffered some traumatic experience or most likely been locked away as she appears to be agoraphobic. Megan seems quite settled and at home in her stable, with her little neighbours, the recently rescued pony mum and baby mule but as soon as she gets out into the open she just appears to totally panic. She is generally terrified of the horses but seems to cope better with the donkeys and miniatures. She just cannot

cope with being let off to run free. On her first day out she just bolted and galloped blindly around the fields sending fences flying everywhere. On the next couple of outings it became clear that she did not know how to behave when in the open air. So with regular short walks throughout the day out into the fields, building her confidence with time and patience, is the best way forward. This is not a problem for the Centre as Co-Founder Sue Weeding said: “Time is not an issue, whatever Megan needs Megan will get. Right now we are most concerned with her psychological wellbeing and helping her adapt to a new confident way of living, slowly and patiently is our goal.” EHCRC are Megan’s custodians now and they will do whatever it takes to build this beautiful girl’s confidence and help her to have a happy healthy life. EHCRC is a non-profit organisation with no governmental funding. It is thanks to Sue and Rod Weeding and the generosity of all the donators and volunteers that this invaluable service continues. If you would like to become a supporter then check out the website: www.easyhorsecare.net for all information about donating financially or donating articles such as good quality furniture for the Charity Shops and you’ll find information too on their Open Days on the first Sunday of the month and more.

On Tuesday 26th March representatives of the Royal Naval Association (RNA) visited Age Concern on the Costa Blanca Sur, La Siesta. The reason was to make a donation of €372 to Age Concern’s President, Maureen Payne. The money will go towards helping Age Concern maintain their high level of services, mobility aids and vehicles for the over 50s on the Southern Costa Blanca. The RNA raises funds by the way of raffles and book sales during their monthly visits to Restaurant Danmark in Torrevieja where they enjoy meeting for a menu del dia. The RNA was formed in 1990 and has a solid membership base of 85. However, they are always looking out for new members and anyone interested in joining need not necessarily be ex-navy. What’s most important is that they maintain the ethos of the association.

The RNA selects three worthy charities on a yearly basis to donate to. Age Concern were

Three people are up in court this week for the abduction and murder of a man following a dispute over parking spaces. The crime took place in 2016 when the victim went to the defendant’s house to talk about the car parking spaces they both owned. According to the prosecution, a disagreement then followed and the defendant hit the victim with a blunt instrument and tied his

hands and feet together. It wasn’t however, until two days later that the victim was killed having been kept captive during that time. The body was then dismembered and deposited in different bins around the town. The woman charged with the offence worked for the man as his housekeeper, a job which included taking care of the defendant’s mother. The accused

then went on to take money out of the victim’s bank account and went to his holiday home from where they stole a number of objects. The two are now charged with the crime of murder, illegal detention, fraud and breaking and entering. The case is being tried in Elche and is expected to last for five days. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Comarcón success in NEWS: spite of the weather Continued from page 5 fishing, Fanny Serrano has met with the director general of fishing to take a closer look at Alicante University’s report on the viability of implementing a marine reserve in Torrevieja. Overall, it is believed that the proposal is viable and the local government is keen to get it underway. Next week steps will be taken to organise the designation of an area off the coast as protected and the administrative procedures will be put in place. Reassurance has been given that establishing a reserve will not mean restrictions on recreational use.

Bullet proof vests on order A total of 140 bullet proof vests are expected to be put on order in the next few weeks. The announcement was made by the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, during a press release on March 25th. A company has now presented samples of the vests for both men and women and there are just a few remaining hurdles before the vests can finally be secured. The need for such a purchase has been an issue for the local police for some time and the actual purchase of the vests will be considered to be something of a break through. The contract for the vests comes to €109,694.97.

It wasn’t the best weather for Comarcón 2019 but it didn’t dissuade thousands of young, and some older, people from turning up to find out what was available this year. It is believed that around 4,000 people passed through the doors of the town’s sports centre and browsed along the rows of stall and activities. It is the seventh time that the event has taken place and it provides opportunity for lovers of alternative leisure activities to share their interests. It was free to enter and is now considered to be one of the most prestigious of these types of events across Spain. Altogether 150 different activities were on offer and it was opened by some familiar figures including a magician, a soldier and a hobbit. Following on from this, there was plenty to entertain the crowds including some new attractions. This year the event included an area for retro games and the Wifi access had been

improved. There was the usual selection of table top games, role play activities, soft combat and video game tournaments. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, visited the event in the morning and was received by the president of the youth association, Sergio Ros. The Sports palace had been divided up into different sections including areas for video games, table top games, stages, workshops, role play and soft combat. It was an excellent opportunity for people who are fans of these kinds of leisure activities to catch up on the news, get advice from the experts and try out new things. Comarcón opened on the Saturday and those attending could then pitch tents and stay overnight to enjoy more activities on the Sunday. An ambulance was located on the site thanks to Hospital Quirónsalud. Suzanne O’Connell

Consumer agency slams website charging for EU healthcards One of Spain’s main consumer protection organisations has warned about a website which charges €59 to renew a European health card used to cover emergency medical treatment when travelling within the EU, and which gives the impression of being the official platform for doing so. Although the company’s activity is not, technically, illegal, it is highly misleading, because there is no charge for applying for or replacing an EU health card – the €59 fee is merely that which the firm charges for doing so on applicants’ behalf. And there is no need to pay someone else to do so, since the process via the official channel – the Social Security office – is just as simple. FACUA-Consumers in Action says the website uses different addresses, and in the small print of each, explains that they are the property of a company named Servione Servicios Generales, S.L. This has since changed its name to Momentum Euroconsulting, S.L. The site uses the same colours and font as the web page for the European Commission, and includes the European flag symbol, meaning it is easy for internet users to assume they are using an official channel and to pay for a service which is, in fact, free of charge. Although the site does in fact confirm the ‘service’ is run by a private company, it is in a much smaller font and in a position that does not guarantee the user will see it prior to completing and filing the application, which is considered to be a case of ‘unfair competition’ and ‘misleading practice’, in accordance with Spanish legislation known as the Disloyal Competition Law, in force since 1991. Anyone living in Spain of any nationality whose healthcare entitlement comes from their Social Security contributions – via employment,

self-employment or a situation reflecting this, such as being on the dole, in receipt of maternity, paternity or sickness pay or, shortly, anyone registered as a non-professional carer – is permitted to hold a European health card. The Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea is the same as the one known to British nationals as an EHIC, only that it is issued from Spain rather than the UK, meaning cross-border payment for medical treatment is made by the Spanish authorities rather than the British government. Issued by every European Union member State, the European health card entitles the holder to medical care in a member State other than the one they habitually reside in for emergencies – normally defined as any necessary treatment which cannot wait until the end of the traveller’s planned stay. Non-EU nationals living in EU countries, where their healthcare is provided by their country of residence, are also entitled to hold these, meaning British nationals who are in possession of a Spanish-issued European health card may still use it when they visit other member States, even after Brexit. They are obtained by filing an application online via the Social Security (Seguridad Social) website, and are delivered by ordinary post. Once they expire, they can then be renewed via the same process. EHIC holders, in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, have also reported similar misleading practices of private firms charging to renew or replace health cards via websites which give the impression of being an official channel, but none of the 28 member States charges for issue or replacement of these cards, meaning if a fee is requested from any website, it is being operated by a company, not by the health authority in question.

Semana Santa in Torrevieja It is nearly time for Holy Week and the cofradías, or brotherhoods, are preparing for their annual processions in what is the event of the year for them. Many of the processions set out from the main church in Torrevieja, the Inmaculada Concepción. Others set out from the Sagrado Corazon de Jesus church in the Plaza de Oriente. The different floats, or pasos, are carried by the costaleros on behalf of the cofradías. It is a very important occasion for all those who are religious and one that is planned for during a large part of the year. The pasos

travels in a circle, setting off from the Plaza de la Constitución. On Holy Tuesday, 16th April the procession sets off at 10pm from the Plaza de la Constitución, again travelling in a circle to return there later. On the Wednesday there are two separate processions which later meet up. One sets off from the Inmaculada Concepción church and one from the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús church. Both processions begin at 10pm and then meet up at the junction between calle María Parodi and Ramón Gallud.

Burial procession. The procession sets off from the Inmaculada Concepción church. This is the biggest of the processions with 18 floats and the involvement of 15 cofradías. It is the great drum procession on Saturday 20th April. Called the ‘Tamborada’ it sets off from the Plaza de Oriente at 5.30pm. This noisy parade is a celebration of the resurrection and the bands associated with each of the cofradías take part. Those who participate are given a chocolate at the end. On Sunday 21st April at 8pm the

can weigh around 1,500 kilos and so it is not surprising that their movement is slow and requires the costaleros to have prepared in advance and practised the rhythm that they must adopt. This year the Domingo de Ramos procession will take place on 14th April at 8.30pm. It is a solemn occasion with palms and sets off from the Plaza de Oriente until the Plaza de la Constitución. On Holy Monday 15th April at 10pm the procession

On Holy Thursday 18th April the silent procession will take place at 11pm from the Plaza de la Constitución. This procession represents Jesus entering with the cross and establishments on the route are asked to turn off their lights and maintain the silence. The only musical accompaniment is the sound of the drum. At 12.30am there is another procession from Plaza del Calvario. On Good Friday 19th April it is the Holy

procession sets off from the church of la Inmaculada Concepción. Be aware if you are a regular commuter into Torrevieja that some streets during the week have limited access at certain times. You will notice temporary circular signs on some of the routes which indicate when you shouldn’t park there. A towing service removes vehicles parked on the route of the procession at least 12 hours before it starts. Suzanne O’Connell

Choirs for Habaneras competition Twelve choirs taking part in Torrevieja’s annual Habaneras choral competition have been announced. The groups come from Colombia, China, the Philippines, South Korea, Italy, United States, Russia and the Ukraine. This is the 65th competition of its kind and every year it brings international interest as being a unique occasion. The competition take place this year between the 24th and 27th July and the 12 choirs have been selected from an application of 40 altogether. Over the course of the four days it is expected that Torrevieja will host around 600 singers from all over Europe, America and Asia. Ten of those taking part are from other countries with only two Spanish contestants. There are five from Europe in total, three from America and Asia is sending four choirs, with one from Beijing in China. The two Spanish choirs are both from Madrid. This truly international event includes the singing in the traditional habaneras and polyphony styles, types of choral singing that come from Cuba. It dates back to the time when Torrevieja had close trading

arrangements with Cuba through its boats and ships. The choirs will each interpret five songs, one of which is compulsory for all of them: ‘Rosita de un verde palmar’. The publicity for the event begins now, not only in Spain but across the world. The advertising campaign in itself will cost €80,000 but the revenue it brings in is considered to far outweigh any cost to the town. This money will be used to promote the event through advertising in airports, not only in Spain but also in the participating countries. It will also be the first time that the competition takes place linked to the electricity network. Usually the power is provided by a generator which can cause additional unwanted noise. This year the Eras de la Sal, where the competition takes place, will hopefully be equipped with an electricity supply. This addition to the facilities on offer at the Eras de la Sal could also mean that the venue is eligible for an opening licence. Something that would prevent previous difficulties that have occurred with authorising concerts and other events there. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE Last week, the pound was particularly volatile as Brexit dominated the headlines and the market. The UK inflation data showed an increase to 1.9%; despite this good news the Bank of England are expected to keep the interest rate unchanged amidst Brexit uncertainty. Earlier this week, there were similar fluctuations after Commons speaker ruled out a third vote on “substantially the same” bill on the Brexit deal. The pound fell briefly before the market considered the implications and the increased likelihood of the PM asking for an extension on the Brexit deadline and a request for postponement followed shortly. The PM had to wait while the 27 EU leaders discussed the idea and eventually agreed to an

extension until 12th April, and a further extension to 22nd May if a clear plan of action could be found by this date. The pound made rapid gains on Friday morning after the news but all the same challenges remain for the government in getting the deal through. The euro was largely overshadowed by the Brexit drama, but there was some significant news this week. In January, the balance of trade in the euro zone widened to a seasonally-adjusted €17 billion. Of itself that was not remarkable but the zone's surplus with the United States and its deficit with China grew bigger, potentially increasing tension in both directions: Europe has already announced its wish to balance trade with China and the US.

Guaranteeing quality in Torrevieja The quality mark of SICTED (Compromiso de CalidadTurística en Destino) has now been awarded to 40 businesses in the town. The awards were presented by Councillor Fanny Serrano at the Centro de Turismo on 26th March. The SICTED award represents a commitment to tourist quality and requires that certain criteria are met. Of the forty meriting the distinction, 15 companies have not received the award before. These include eight beach kiosks including 333, Gloria, Blondy, Juanito, The Barhan Beach, Tuchiringuito, Estefi and Pura Vida. There are twenty five companies that

have gained the quality recognition again. These include Masa Hotel, Club Náutico Marina Internacional, Centro de Lavado Torrevieja, Rubio Mar, Aquopolis, Odisea Diving, Restaurante Nautilus, RCN Torrevieja, Policía Local, Apartamentos Fresno, Marina Salinas, Mar Holidays, Hotel Spa/Golf Doña Monse, Hotel Playas de Torrevieja, La Nonna Home & Babies, La bocana Water Sport, Tourist Info Torrevieja, Pizzería no.1, Hipershoes and Wash & More. In order to gain the awards, the companies have had to pass training and meet evaluation requirements. Suzanne O’Connell

Do you know how your pension is invested? How to understand your retirement savings and pull them together to work harder • Consolidating your old pensions into one easy tomanage pension can cut costs • A Sipp is a good option for those looking to broaden their investment choices

D

o you have an old workplace pension but haven't a clue about how your money is invested or have old pensions that you've lost track of? If so, you're not alone. The responsibility to save for retirement is increasingly falling to individuals, but many people struggle to connect with how their workplace pension is performing, or what happened to old pots. Most people worked for a number of different employers over the course of their careers and, as a result, end up with several different pension pots. However, left in an old employer's pension scheme, your money is at risk from high charges and poor performance. An obvious remedy to this is to consolidate your old pensions into one easy‐to‐manage pension. Many people therefore choose to open a self‐invested personal pension ‐ a Sipp ‐ that offers them a much wider choice of funds and other investment options. Put simply, Sipps are a type of do‐it‐yourself private pension that allow savers to cherry pick from thousands of investments to create a portfolio tailored to their individual appetite for risk and investment objectives. This can include funds, investment trusts and shares. Bear in mind that you'll be responsible for making your own investment decisions and managing your portfolio which is by no means an easy feat. If you’re not comfortable tackling big decisions on your own, then this is where Seagate can help you.

Muscat

Muscat is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Oman. It is also the seat of government and largest city in the Governorate of Muscat. Muscat is also considered as a Global City. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the total population of Muscat Governorate reached 1.56 million as of September 2015. The metropolitan area spans approximately 3,500 km2 (1,400 sq mi) and includes six provinces called wilayats. Known since the early 1st century CE as an important trading port between the west and the east, Muscat was ruled by various indigenous tribes as well as foreign powers such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire at various points in its history. A regional military power in the 18th century, Muscat's influence extended as far as East Africa and

Zanzibar. As an important port-town in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat attracted foreign tradesmen and settlers such as the Persians and the Balochis. Since the ascension of Qaboos bin Said as Sultan of Oman in 1970, Muscat has experienced rapid infrastructural development that has led to the growth of a vibrant economy and a multi-ethnic society.

development of Muscat, which provided new opportunities for trade and tourism in the 1980s – 1990s, attracting migrants from around the region. On June 6, 2007, Cyclone Gonu hit Muscat causing extensive damage to property, infrastructure and commercial activity. Muscat might hold the 2016 Arab League Summit. Early photographs of the city and harbor, taken in the early 20th century by German explorer and photographer, Hermann Burchardt, are now held at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin.

Geography The Tropic of Cancer passes south of the area. It is bordered to its west by the plains of the Al Batinah Region and to its east by Ash Sharqiyah Region. The interior plains of the Ad Dakhiliyah Region border Muscat to the south, while the Gulf of Oman forms the northern and western periphery of the city. The water along to coast of Muscat runs deep, forming two natural harbours, in Muttrah and Muscat. The Western Al Hajar Mountains run through the northern coastline of the city. Volcanic rocks are apparent in the Muscat area, and are composed of serpentine and diorite, extending along the Gulf of Oman coast for ten or twelve 16 kilometres from the district of Darsait to Yiti. Plutonic rocks constitute the hills and mountains of Muscat and span approximately 30 miles (48 km) from Darsait to Ras Jissah. These igneous rocks consists of serpentine, greenstone and basalt, typical of rocks in southeastern regions of the Arabian Peninsula.

History Evidence of communal activity in the area around Muscat dates back to the 6th millennium BCE in Ras al-Hamra, where burial sites of fishermen have been found. The graves appear to be well formed and indicate the existence of burial rituals. South of Muscat, remnants of Harappan pottery indicate some level of contact with the Indus Valley Civilisation. Muscat's notability as a port was acknowledged as early as the 1st century CE by the Greek geographer Ptolemy, who referred to it as Cryptus Portus (the Hidden Port), and by Pliny the Elder, who called it Amithoscuta. The port fell to a Sassanid invasion in the 3rd century CE, under the rule of Shapur I, while conversion to Islam occurred during the 7th century. Muscat's importance as a trading port continued to grow in the centuries that followed, under the influence of the Azd dynasty, a local tribe. With the assistance of the British, Qaboos bin Said put an end to the Dhofar uprising and consolidated disparate tribal territories. He renamed the country the Sultanate of Oman (called Muscat and Oman hitherto), in an attempt to end to the interior's isolation from Muscat. Qaboos enlisted the services of capable Omanis to fill positions in his new government, drawing from such corporations as Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). New ministries for social services such as health and education were established. The construction of Mina Qaboos, a new port conceived initially by Sa`id bin Taimur, was developed during the early days of Qaboos' rule. Similarly, a new international airport was developed in Muscat's Seeb district. A complex of offices, warehouses, shops and homes transformed the old village of Ruwi in Muttrah into a commercial district. The first five-year development plan in 1976 emphasised infrastructural

Climate Muscat features a hot, arid climate with long and very hot summers and warm "winters". In general precipitation is scarce in Muscat, with several months on average seeing only a trace of rainfall. However, in recent years, heavy precipitation events from tropical systems originating in the Arabian Sea have affected the city.

Economy Muscat's economy, like that of Oman, is dominated by trade. The more traditional exports of the city included dates, mother of pearl, and fish. Many of the souks of Muttrah sell these items and traditional Omani artefacts. Petroleum Development Oman has been central to Muscat's economy since at least 1962 and is the country's second largest employer, after the government. The Muscat Securities Market is the principal stock exchange of Oman. It is located in Central Business District of Muscat and it was established in 1988, and has since distinguished itself as a pioneer among its regional peers in terms of transparency and disclosure regulations and requirements. Mina'a Sultan Qaboos, Muscat's main trading port, is a trading hub between the Persian Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East with an annual volume of about 1.6 million tons.

I want grandchildren

I feel torn

My son and his wife have announced that they aren’t going to have children. It wasn’t a casual remark just dropped in to the conversation, but an actual announcement. I admit that I have kept on about having grandchildren since they married, however he is an only child so it’s my only chance. When my son left home, I felt the ‘empty nest thing’ quite badly. When I confided in a friend, she said that it was their choice what they did with their lives. I can’t understand why my son isn’t thinking of me. I blame his wife. They also don’t come around so much now.

My friend married another of my close friends and I couldn’t have been happier. However, after 10 years of marriage she is having an affair and her husband doesn’t know about it. She’s confided in me and wants to leave her husband. They have twin boys, and I feel she’s had her head turned by this chancer she's seeing, who hasn’t got a job. She’s been a stay at home mother, and has just got bored I think. Her husband is one of the nicest people I know, and I can’t carry this burden as I feel I am betraying him.

I gather from your email that you live alone as you don’t mention your son’s father. I agree with your friend - this is your son and daughter-in-laws' decision and if they don’t want to have children, then you should not try and change their minds. It’s interesting that they made a specific announcement. Is it possible that your remarks have driven them to do this? Take care not to push them away.

Once he finds out that you knew, that’s exactly how he’ll see it. You must tell his wife that you can no longer be there for her, as knowing puts you in a very difficult situation. You may lose her as a friend, but she is possibly not thinking clearly right now. Unfortunately it’s not your place to make demands that she finish with this man, but you’ll need to distance yourself otherwise you could be dragged into things and blamed.

Barcelona to get Hollywoodstyle ‘Walk of Fame’

Montserrat Caballé

Barcelona could soon have its own Hollywoodstyle Walk of Fame with the names of huge stars in the Cataluña arts world engraved into its surface. Among these would be the late Montserrat Caballé, a world-renowned opera diva who became a household name through her duet with ex-Queen front man Freddie Mercury, Barcelona, a global hit which became the theme tune for the 1992 Olympics in the city. Late actor, comedian and theatre director Pepe Rubianes, pianist and playwright Carles Santos, who died 15 months ago, actress and radio presenter María Matilde Almendros, and musician Monty are also likely to have their own Walk of Fame star – even though at least two of them were not born in the region. Those featured will be performing artists who have ‘left their mark on Catalunya’ in some way or another, says the Cataluña Association of Theatre Companies (ADETCA). The Walk of Fame will be on the lively central

boulevard known as La Rambla de Santa Mònica and will be designed by US artist Philip Stanton, who will be commissioned to ‘update’ it every March 27 with new names. This date coincides with World Theatre Day and, for its 2019 edition, ADETCA will be organising guided tours of Barcelona’s main performance halls such as the Catalunya National Theatre (TNC), the Barts Hall and the Victòria Theatre, as well as staging oneact plays and play readings in the El TriangleFNAC auditorium, acted out and directed by members of the Cataluña Professional Actors’ and Directors’ Association (AADPC) and the Performance Artists’ Management Society (AISGE). ADETCA’s chairwoman Isabel Vidal says theatre audiences have increased by around 9 percent in Spain the past year.

home against its competitors in the marketplace, so you need to put a price on that reflects its condition. If you are reluctant to make any repairs, the price will have to reflect that. And, if you have no funds available to make any repairs, then lowering the asking price will entice someone solely on value. If a house is overpriced, the market will respond with a lack of interest, fewer viewings and no offers. Price fixes everything. Selling? Enjoy the journey.

W

hat if I were to tell you, that YOU could increase your chances of selling your home faster, by doing just one thing?

Well this is true! Most people nowadays are very familiar with knowing that they need to de-clutter, clean and make the home presentable, to welcome any buyer coming in. But what they need to pay the most attention to, is the price! No matter what any home seller may think their property is worth, it is always the market that decides a home’s value. A busy market can mean a higher value. A slow market means a lower value. I have yet to find a home to which this rule does not apply, whether it’s a dilapidated shack or a glamorous mansion. Regardless of a property’s condition, there are “investors” out there that offer a low price and usually say, “take it or leave it.” They also say, their price is the right one. It’s the market that will decide when the price of the house, matches the product. Is your home priced accordingly? Is it updated and in proper repair? If not, the market will prove that your price has to take any renovation or repair work into account, for it to sell. Buyers will be comparing your

Girls Lena Dunham’s crass public behaviour makes it more miraculous that she is the master of the modern halfhour dramedy. So many young TV auteurs have failed to emulate Dunham’s knack for elliptical, off-kilter scripts that tell you everything you need about characters who don’t fit any stereotype. With the stories artfully leaving gaps for online debate to fill, the reaction to Girls at times made it feel like a modish provocation, but beneath the observations about the alien world of pampered millennial Brooklyn is a rare emotional intelligence and humour.

Raif Moyle (Hound) has been chosen to be the best man to his brother Tim (Webb) and Saskia (Punch) at their wedding. Raif decides to give Tim and Saskia an unforgettable present in the form of a wedding video. He discovers that Tim has left his bohemian life behind and is marrying into a family aspirant of a higher-class lifestyle - especially Saskia’s hideous grandmother (Miriam Margolyes). With the bride’s mother interfering with wedding plans (such as arranging horses dressed as unicorns and butterflies to release by the bridesmaids), Raif finds out that Saskia is the rebellious Saskia he knew at school. Spending an increasing amount of time with her during the wedding arrangements, Raif and Saskia kiss after the stress of the planning takes its toll on her. Eventually revealing this to Tim en route to the wedding, they decide to intercept Saskia on her way to the church. Tim asks Saskia whether she really wants the marriage to go ahead; she tearfully says “no”. Arriving late to the church, the three make their way up the aisle to the altar, where Tim announces that his and Saskia’s wedding will not proceed. However, Raif steps forward and the vicar conducts a brief, but non-legal, ceremony for Raif and Saskia. At the wedding reception, being held at a grand stately home, Saskia’s mother realises that all she wants is for Saskia to be happy.

STACEY DOOLEY SPLITS FROM LONG TERM LOVE Stacey Dooley has reportedly split from her long-time boyfriend Sam Tucknott after a three-year relationship. The investigative journalist, 32, struggled to maintain her romance with the personal trainer, 30, as insiders claim their lives have gone in different directions after she won 2018’s edition of Strictly Come Dancing in December. A source told a national tabloid: ‘Stacey confided in her friends that she

was struggling to hold down her romance with Sam because her life has been a whirlwind after Strictly. The insider continued: ‘She barely saw him during the month-long tour and has gone straight back into filming documentaries and has been travelling all over the world.’ The BBC star recently hinted her relationship with the fitness enthusiast was under strain as she labelled him

‘useless, annoying and messy around the house’ while reflecting on the ups and downs of their home-life in a candid interview. She echoed her comments in an interview with You Magazine, admitting she does most of the housework as Sam is ‘not very whizzy’. Despite her remarks, Stacey praised his chilled and supportive nature: ‘He understands when you’re on top of a hill

in the Democratic Republic of the Congo you can’t panic because someone’s waiting for you to call home.’ Stacey denied rumours that she was growing close to former dance partner Kevin back in February and said Sam

wasn’t in the least bit jealous. She told The Times: ‘The truth is Kevin and I are brilliant friends and he’ll be my pal for life and Sam was probably the most supportive he has ever been. ‘When I first got the gig he was just so made up. He was dancing round our living room. And every week he’d say, “Listen to Kevin. Kevin knows best”. He was a dream.’ She also said: ‘Of course it’s weird. King Kev was my knight in shining armour, he sort of dragged me through the whole experience, it was such a dream’.

156 year-old port sets world record at auction While the stock market may have turned from bull to bear, investment in booze has been on an incredible boom. The recent Wealth Report 2019 pegged rare whiskey as offering, by far, its best returns over the past year, with the spirit buoyed by repeated recordbreaking sales at auction. Fine wine also saw a nine-percent bump in value over the same period, thanks in part to some recordsetting auction sales of its own. Meanwhile, Port wine - a tipple that knows a thing or two about aging - shouldn’t be forgotten either: On Friday, Sotheby’s announced the auction house had seen a new world record bid for the Portuguese fortified wine. A decanter of Niepoort in Lalique 1863 Port wine sold at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong for HK$1,054,000 or £102,000. The specially-designed bottle from crystal giant Lalique is the second of five decanters created for this partnership and it broke the previous record of about £95,000 set in November at the auction of the first decanter. Making the new record that much more rewarding, all the net proceeds of the sale are being donated to The Nature Conservancy. The newly-crafted decanter “is based on the original 11-litre demijohn from 1905,” according to Sotheby’s, “engraved with a name from one of the five van der Niepoort generations” - in this case Eduard Karel Jacob van der Niepoort - “and presented in a bespoke Macassar ebony wood cabinet with Lalique grape pattern crystal inlays created by Lalique Maison.” As for the wine inside, it’s “the exceptionally rare 156-year-old vintage Port created in 1863 by the first Niepoort generation, Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort.” The auction house later notes that critics James Suckling and Jancis Robinson have both given this

Port a perfect score. “We are thrilled to achieve another landmark price for what is the oldest Port we have ever bottled, commemorating our remarkable journey over five generations,” Dirk van der Niepoort stated. “We only have one demijohn from 1905, which contains one of our first wines, 1863. It is an incredibly rare Port, the result of years of dedication and craftsmanship.” Of course, the argument could be made that it was the new crystal decanter, not the wonderful Port inside that truly catapulted this auction into record territory. Bids boosted by the bottle are actually quite common. For instance, though The Macallan 1926 has been getting all the credit for repeatedly smashing the record for most expensive whisky ever sold at auction, the artwork on these bottles which is courtesy of either Sir Peter Blake or Valerio Adami depending on which one sold - is part of what has driven up the price.

Britain’s favourite crisps revealed viewers were left outraged, hurt and frustrated last night by a show dedicated to finding the country’s favourite

TV

crisps. Britain’s Favourite Crisps aired on Channel 5 recently and sparked fury online as watchers branded the results absolutely sickening. Dubbed a national disgrace, the programme ranked Walkers, Doritos and Pringles as the top three, leaving Monster Munch fans threatening to call Ofcom. @AndyGilder said: ‘Channel 5 devoting two hours to Britain’s Favourite Crisps. Because if we’re politically and morally bankrupt, we may as well be culturally bankrupt too.’ The very integrity of the show was called into question, as one viewer concluded that the only way that Monster Munch couldn’t have made the top three was if the programme was making it up. Airing the day after about a million people marched in London to demand a People’s Vote, snacklovers were left demanding a second referendum on crisps as they vented their anger online. Jack Stirling wrote: ‘Skips not even in the top 20. What’s the actual point? Shows how messed democracy is in this country.’ The show’s makers split the crisps that made the list into four tiers, with Walkers Pringles and Doritos landing in the prestigious God Tier. The second rung, confusingly called the Top Tier featured McCoy’s, Kettle, Tyrells and Sensations. A Mid Tier featured Hula Hoops, Monster Munch, Quavers, Wotsits and Chipsticks. The lowest rung, named Don’t Come Anywhere Near Me With These, comprised Squares, Nik Naks and Salt ‘n’ Shake. Also included in that tier was Mini Cheddars which led some to brand the show inaccurate, because it is a baked snack.

Do you have the skills to help the Stroke Association? Stroke Association Spain has grown from strength to strength, especially since moving into their fully equipped centre at The Cultural Centre in Benijófar. Now they are in need of additional volunteers to maintain the level of service. They are able to offer rehabilitation, physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy to stroke sufferers once help from the Health Service ceases. They also provide support to the carers and help them to help their loved ones. Social activities form an essential part of rehabilitation, and these take place on Wednesday afternoons. All these services are provided on a voluntary basis, and they rely on donations from the local community to cover varying costs. They are also in need of additional volunteers. They are looking for someone with basic computer and administrative skills to join the committee as Secretary. Work will involve petty cash accounting; record keeping; attending and minuting meetings and communicating information to members. A second volunteer with nursing skills is also very desirable. This person would be carrying out assessments of new clients, using prescribed form and with the aim of agreeing an individual recovery programme; helping with rehabilitation/speech/occupational therapy, and chairing carers' monthly meetings. The Centre is open Monday,

Wednesday and Friday from 13.30 to 17.00. Both positions are voluntary, but expenses can be paid. If you have some time to spare and would like to help the Stroke Association help stroke victims and their families, please contact Paul on 653 588 475.

Health benefits of seaweed Seaweed absorbs nutrients from the seabed, making the marine vegetable packed with even more nutrients and vitamins than mainland-grown fruits and veggies. The unlikely superfood is popping up everywhere: in our drinks, meals and even our skincare. The salty snack is popular in plant-based diets, as it is a unique vegan source of essential amino acids. Meanwhile, seaweed is an abundant, carbon-negative food source, so it's ideal for eco-conscious consumers. If you’re still not convinced about adding seaweed to

Tech Fact William via email asks: I have a windows 7 tower and up to now it has been ultra reliable but I tried to update Windows security and box came up saying “Windows update not running” but on my Windows 7 laptop I have no problem with downloading updates...Help please! Aunty Says: Hello William. It’s difficult to know what could be causing this (and how to fix it) so maybe try going to “Control Panel” and “System and Security” “Windows Update” and click on “Check for Updates”. This may throw up some error messages that could give you a clue as to where the problem is. Windows 7 will still be around until 2020, so as long as the tower PC has some life left in it, it’s worth spending a bit of time on. See how you get on with the manual updating and let me know. Peter via email asks: I read in an article a while ago about keyboard short cuts when printing. I think to press the Ctrl key and a number before it prints. On my translator app when I print it shows black and white but the Spanish text comes out of the printer blue and white! I do not want to use all my blue ink on my Epson xp342. Aunty Says: Hello Peter. The keyboard shortcut that you are talking about is the Ctrl

key plus the P key at the same time. This will bring up the Windows print

settings and from there you should be able to find a setting for black & white or greyscale. Gail from Benijofar asks: Hello Aunty. When I am using my Hotmail email loads of adverts keep appearing and when this happens it stops me from typing and sometimes the letters I am typing take ages to appear. Is there any way that I can stop these adverts popping up as they are very annoying and some of them are a little bit unsavory. I am using Windows 10. Aunty Says: Hi Gail. I still swear by Adblock which you can get from

www.getadblock.com It is a “pay what you like” app which is basically free if you don’t feel like paying for it. You should also give your machine a full scan with Malwarebytes and your favourite antivirus program. Paul via email asks: Dear Aunty, I was given a second hand Lenovo laptop which runs fine and I only really use it for downloading and playing music for my bar. The only problem that I am having is that the hard disk is full and I am getting a warning message that the C: is full. Is there an easy and cheap way I can upgrade the hard drive? I don’t want to spend too much money as the laptop is a bit tatty. Aunty Says: Hello Paul. You can replace the laptop’s hard disk drive but it will be a huge amount of work reinstalling Windows + all of your data/programs. You will be far better off buying a 1TB USB external hard disk for around €65 which you simply plug into a spare USB port and it will appear on your computer as a new drive letter. Well that’ll do for another week, email your problems to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

message is clear. #DistractedDrivingKills In an initiative first created in the UK by Neil Dewson-Smyth, a serving police officer in Cheshire Constabulary, but now, in its fourth year, gaining global support, #DontStreamAndDrive Day 2019 is set for April 16th. Whilst the day is the main event, it is the culmination of several weeks of pushing the message across social media across the UK and internationally. In the most recent data published by the World Health Organisation, every 24 seconds someone dies on the road. Road traffic injuries are the number 1 cause of death amongst children aged 5 to 14 and young adults aged 15 to 29. Smartphones have become the most popular internetconnected device (78% of UK adults use one) and websites around the world have seen mobile devices overtake desktop computers. There is a substantial documented research proving that hand held and hands free mobile phone use is a significant distraction and substantially increases the risk of being involved in a crash. A National Safety Council white paper concludes drivers using mobile phones have a tendency to look but not see (sometimes referred to as ‘Inattentional blindness’). A lorry driver involved in a crash that killed 8 people on the M1 in 2017

cited ‘Inattentional blindness’ in his defence, as he was using a hands free mobile device at the time his vehicle hit a minibus and shunted it into another lorry. Social media has become the new place to find breaking news and often before the major news outlets. Members of the public have the opportunity, when presented with a situation, to break that news to the internet. The concept of ‘Citizen Journalism’ became increasingly apparent when news sources like the New York Times decided that there was little need for their own photographer pool as social media users are now always first on the scene. The draw of this is high and is evident by the number of those who record crash scenes as they drive past ( #eRubberNecking ) or how many people record unfolding incidents instead of helping. #DontStreamAndDrive Day is in its 4th year. It is run entirely on social media and in the last 3 years has attained a social reach of over 100m. Its aim has always been to raise the awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and especially those engendered by recording or broadcasting video. It is the only campaign of its type in the world and has enjoyed the support of most UK police forces, many other emergency services, road safety organisations, the public and many police officers across the country on Twitter.

Distracted driving is not something new. It has always been there from rubber necking to messing with the stereo, lighting cigarettes, drinking/eating and even children. The mobile phone has simply added an additional distraction to already overloaded drivers. Whereas up until recent years the phone was a device for simply talking to somebody, itself distracting enough, the development of the smartphone has brought about a new range of features, and a new range of distractions. Mobile phones have become an extension of our hands and so normalised to us that many drivers are oblivious to the dangers. Our lives are becoming increasingly digitally orientated. The plethora of social media platforms, chat services and other applications are all calling for the users attention and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) has become a very real issue for many. Then we have those who actively engage with such platforms whilst driving. A short glance to read a notification can lead to tragedy but live and recorded video has become very popular and is increasingly leading drivers to record footage whilst at the wheel. A brief search across social media platforms will quickly reveal drivers engaged in this dangerous behaviour in your area and across the globe. The

Seat Belts – Live & Learn In the most recent intensified campaign focussing on the wearing of seat belts and child restraints, 4,446 people were found to be not wearing a seat belt, adults who actively made that choice, whereas 262 children were also travelling without any form of restraint, 62 of them in the front seat. It might be a well known fact that children learn by example, but that doesn´t seem to be realised by the adults responsible for those children found to be put at risk. That said, those

2017, when the defendant was driving his car, an Opel Corsa, at speeds between 120 and 130 kilometres per hour on a section of the MA-20 motorway at the exit of the Carlos Haya tunnel, in the Almería direction, where the maximum permitted limit is 80 kilometres per hour. The reports state that the vehicle was travelling in the left hand lane and whilst the driver was distracted moved, “inadvertently,” to the centre lane. The driver then noticed another vehicle

children are the lucky ones, as hopefully the lesson will be learnt and the responsible adults will take appropriate action from now on. To be found responsible for the death of any child is a burden that is almost impossible to conceive, let alone one´s own. That burden will not be eased by the courts, as has been witnessed in a sentence handed down in Madrid, in which the driver of a car

and realised a collision was imminent, thus making a sharp turn to the left to avoid the crash, losing control of his car and colliding with the central reservation, before rolling six times. Travelling in the vehicle was the man´s son, a four-year-old boy, who was travelling in a child seat which was located on the back seat of the vehicle. However, the seat had not been secured to the vehicle and the child

ran between the 11th and 17th of March, 4,446 people have been detected not using the seat belt, or the child restraint system in the case of minors, by Guardia Civil traffic patrols. The campaign, which is included in the annual calendar of special actions planned by the International Traffic Police Organization (TISPOL), meant that many countries increased surveillance during the week. In Spain, a total of 377,602 vehicles have been checked and it has been verified that 4,446 people did not use the mandatory security device. The data reveals that 75.6% of people who did not use this safety device were on conventional roads, the place where 8 out of 10 deaths occur. During the seven days, the officers also detected 262 children, of equal or less than 135 cm tall, travelling without any type of security device. Specifically, 62 of them were in the front seat and another 200 in the rear seats. Spanish legislation requires that children equal or less than 135 cm in height who travel by vehicle, in addition to travelling with the child restraint system appropriate to their size and weight as required, must be seated in the rear seats of vehicles, except: 1. When the vehicle does not have rear seats 2. When all the rear seats are already occupied by other minors of the same characteristics. 3. When it is not possible to install all the child restraint systems in said rear seats. It is only in these cases that children can occupy the front seat of the vehicle, but always using the restraint system approved to their size and weight. Child restraint systems must be installed in the vehicle in accordance

has been sentence to two years in prison following a crash in which his son was killed. The incident occurred in February,

was thrown from the vehicle and died instantly due to a head trauma. The sentence states that the defendant had not anchored the child seat to the vehicle, nor had he fastened the safety harness. As a result, the man omitted “the most elementary duties of care that, as father and responsible for the vehicle, were incumbent upon him”. As a result, whilst living with the knowledge of what he was responsible for, the man was sentenced to two years in prison for a crime of homicide for serious imprudence. He was also banned from driving for three years. The man will also have to financially compensate the mother and siblings of the child for a total of 113,307 euro, of which only a portion, 20,451 to each of the children, will be covered by the insurance company. with the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Life Insurance The seat belt is a basic and fundamental element of road safety, a life insurance. For this reason, its use is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle and on all types of roads. In addition, the correct use of it is essential to fulfil the purpose for which it was created. In the monitoring that is done from the air it is appreciated how many occupants of the vehicle either don´t use a seat belt or use it incorrectly, thus reducing the effectiveness of the device. In Spain, seat belt use is not only monitored by ground patrols on a daily basis, but also by the helicopters and drones operated by the DGT, and hundreds of smart cameras around the network.

Imanyo Golf Society “Diabetes Cup”

Quesada Bowls Club

This is the first time we played for the Diabetes Cup in memory of Joyce Allison who sadly passed away last year, Joyce was the wife of our in house photographer Dave Allison, mother Wendy Ralph and mother in law to Alan Ralph who are both regular players in our society and they were both hoping to be this first to get their names on the cup...well the wish came true with Alan winning group A and Wendy winning group B and was the overall winner. Twenty one players took part; the format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner. The venue was Bonalba where we were greeted by Richard Davis and his staff, as usual everything was ready and waiting for us, the course was in excellent condition and the weather was sunny but very breezy which affected some of the scores. Winner of the “Diabetes Cup” was group B winner, “Keep it in the Family” Wendy Ralph with 38 points, runner up of group B was Steve Ayre with 37 points, and third place was “Sandy” Terry Burton with 35 points. Group A winner was “Keep it in The Family” Alan Ralph with 34 points, runner up was Andy Godfrey with 33 points and third place was Chris Baillie

This week the winter season drew to a close for the Southern Alicante Winter League. All three squads fought hard to consolidate their positions. In the Enterprise Division, Pearls finished with a flourish, winning their away match against Vistabella Albatrosses 8-4 points and 75-68 shots. This means they’ve ended the season in 3rd place in the league - well done Pearls!! Meantime, the Diamonds were fighting hard to avoid relegation from the Enterprise Division and in their away match against Vistabella Drivers secured the 2 points needed to finish the season with a 3 point lead against them in the league. A win for Vistabella Drivers 10-2 points and 100-77 shots, gave QBC Diamonds the result they needed to secure their place in the Enterprise Division next year. Job done Diamonds - well done!

with 30 points. Nearest the pins winners were hole 4 Alec Aspden, hole 6 and 16 Andy Godfrey, hole 8 “Happy Hacker” Alan Martin, hole 11 Mo Chaplin and hole14 “The Joker” Mick Billins. The football card was won by Lozz Maslanka with Newcastle United winning

€40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities of 2019. We would like to thank Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s for the good food and great hospitality. www.imanyogolfsociety.com imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com

The newly promoted Rubies have had a very tough season and despite a very valiant 6-6 draw against Mazarron Miners, they finished in the bottom 2 of the Discovery Division, so are at risk of relegation. But all credit and thanks to the Rubies for their hard work and dedication throughout the season. Quesada’s Winter league squad pulled off another great win against Bonalba 93 points and 92-71 shots, maintaining their 4th place in the league. While we’re talking winners, congratulations to Quesadas Terry Morgan and colleagues in the Spanish National Squad, who won both the mens section and the overall Team medals in the 5 nations competition in Cyprus. Fantastic result - congratulations to the whole team. report by Dee Stephenson

San Miguel Golf Society A shotgun start at 9 a.m. (do we love them or hate them?) saw 38 members and 4 guests, as well as 12 Eurogolf team members, arrive at a course that has become a permanent SMGS monthly fixture. Bathed in sunshine and with still conditions, it was hoped that all would be done and dusted by the time the expected 35Km winds turned up some time around early afternoon. Eurogolf members were present to take on a San Miguel team in a fixture that has been held annually in recent years between the two societies and which, until now, had been played at La Marquesa, standing at one win each. Today San Miguel dominated in a matchplay pairs competition 5-1, so going one up in the ongoing series. The next challenge is eagerly awaited. In the SMGS members’ competition, in which all SMGS members participated even if playing in the match against Eurogolf, scoring was pretty even across the board for all categories. Keith Wickham in Bronze recorded the day’s best return with 35 points. David Bishop and Bjorn Pettersson won the Silver and Gold categories respectively, both recording 34 points and beating their nearest adversaries on countback. A Scottish run of taking the Abacus is evolving. Last week Alan MacDonald’s great friend Scotty Phillips took the prize. In his absence this week Alan thought he had better win it, and so did. A final word on the course. Whilst the opening of the 7 new holes has been welcomed by many, and the experience improved recently by allowing buggies on to those holes’ fairways if they enter at right angles, the scalping of those same fairways by mowers set at minimum height appears difficult to explain. Wood users coped, but trying to get an iron

under the ball verged on the impossible. Having seen the pros playing short irons and taking enormous divots at the recent Players and Valspar tournaments in the US of A, it made one wonder how they would cope on solid dry clay surfaces with no grass. Perhaps course professional Adrian Rudge, one of SMGS’s sponsors, could explain to society members unable to find the answer how it is done. It seems we need a workshop! SMGS winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Brian Butler (31), 3rd Mike Inns (32), 2nd Haydn Williams (33) and 1st, with the day’s best score, Keith Wickham with 35 points Silver Category: 4th Steve Hart (30), 3rd Johan Lager (31), 2nd Kyrre Skarsmoen (34 on CB) and 1st David Bishop (34 on CB) Gold Category: 4th Mike Greatorex (33 on CB), 3rd Phil de Lacy (33 on CB), 2nd Colin Rust (34 on CB) and 1st Bjorn Pettersson, also with 34 points Nearest the pins on par 3’s (Sponsored by Property Shop): Hole 2 Robin Eastman, Hole 7 Roger Carter, Hole 11 Johan Lager, Hole 15 Matt Newman Nearest the pin in 2 on hole 17: Paddy Diskin Longest Drive on hole 12: Mike Greatorex Abacus (Sponsored by Mike IPTV Kaylor): Alan MacDonald Best Guests: Ray Waite (32) beat Bertil Lingren (28) in to second place Our thanks go to all Vistabella staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at Hacienda de Riquelme, the following week at La Serena. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Tony Smale a call on 628227687.

RODS & REELS

The 3rd round of the Spring Series was fished on the 26th March on the Embalsa de Argos the venue was changed from Murcia due to work in progress and will be closed to fishing until the end of June. The water at Argos is now way down by at least 14 ft to what it should be at this time of year, rain is needed badly, the clarity of the water is as clear as tap water and we were able to see the bottom at 14 foot. Dave Hutchinson fishing the feeder using pellet took top honours with 22.500kgs, Ian Brown was second with 19.400kgs and coming in third was Tricky Richard Wood with 8.220kgs

Our 13th round of the Winter Championship was fished at El Bosquet A Section on the 27th March. When we arrived the water was calm and it was a reasonably mild morning, but towards the middle of the match the wind became very blustery and was blowing from all directions making presentation very difficult. Taking the top spot and with a nice Birthday win was Neil McBirnie with 22.000kgs, in second spot was Terry Brindley with 18.980kgs and coming in third was Bill Reade with 7.400kgs 1st Neil McBirnie with 22.000kgs fishing the pole using bread and pellet 2nd Terry Brindley with 18.980kgs fishing the pole using paste 3rd Bill Reade with 7.400kgs fishing the pole using bread There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423 P.S. Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, can you believe there are still people in the world that think VAR is a bad thing? I know, right? They obviously don’t include Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock. We’ll come on to how exactly some more refereeing idiocy cost Cardiff at least a point against Chelsea in a bit after we’ve mocked the life out of all the other Premier League news. Fair play to Manchester City, they didn’t need any help from the officials to see off certain-to-be-relegated Fulham at Craven Cottage. None at all. They got enough from the Fulham players who delightfully assisted both City goals in their 2-0 win. All that creativity in Peppy G’s side and it was two Fulham defenders who started both moves which ended with the ball in the home side’s net. Do you remember when everyone was getting very, very excited by a young English talent called Jack Wilshere? Well, as of today, Andy Robertson – a Scottish left-back – has as many assists as Jack. Let that sink in for a moment. A left-back has created as many goals as ‘the best English midfielder of his generation’. I think it is fair to say Wilshere’s career didn’t go as we all hoped. Spurs might have a very nice looking stadium to play in as of Wednesday, but they are still bobbins against the proper teams. No matter how lovely the shopping experience is at the new White Hart Lane, it doesn’t change the fact that Tottenham are struggling for the top four now, let alone pushing for a title.

Having done the hard work to get so far back into the match against Liverpool that it might have been the moment that changed the race for the title completely, the way they conceded the late winner

caretaker business and it was enough to convince Mr Ed that they’d miss Ole’s smiles if they let him go. United were actually pretty rubbish against Watford and hit Javi Gracia’s men

Mo Salah

could not have been more Spurs-like if they’d actually intended to do the most Spursy thing they could think of. Mo Salah’s ‘header at goal’ was as tame as anything else he’d managed all day but Tottenham’s captain Hugo Lloris contrived to let the ball fall from his fingers, on to the shins of Toby Alderweireld and over the line to give Liverpool three points. Still, the coffee will be lovely at the new gaff. This is a title-race that seems to be going the distance and if we can have more hilarity like that along the way, I’ll be happy. Ole Solskjaer has clearly passed his driving test for the Old Trafford bus as he has officially been announced at the wheel for the next three seasons. Credit to Solskjaer, he has had quite the record since being at Manchester United on a

on the break twice for their goals. What’s that? United played on the counter and defended pretty badly? I know, and Solskjaer is showing you can get away with it if you manage the PR side of things properly. Watford put far more effort in ahead of their FA Cup semi-final against Wolves than their Wembley opponents managed against Burnley. Was there a more nailed on home win than Sean Dyche’s side picking up three points this weekend? I mean, Wolves would have struggled to have got themselves up for an away match against a team in a relegation scrap at the best of times, but when there is an FA Cup semi on the horizon? Rest those legs, chaps. Sean Dyche has now managed Burnley 300 times and he started life at Turf Moor with a 2-0 win against Wolves. On Saturday, they beat Wolves 2-0. Football,

eh? Full of this utterly pointless bookends. And so to Wales, where Cesar Azpilicueta was so far offside he was almost back on English soil. But hey, don’t expect the officials to notice that with seven minutes on the clock and a valuable three points in the hands of Cardiff, right? You could say that that goal wasn’t the goal that meant Cardiff lost, but I disagree. Having been quite visibly robbed by a bunch of crooks (and no, I don’t mean Chelsea for once), Cardiff understandably switched off and Ruben Loftus-Cheek punished them with a winning goal. And, Chelsea didn’t exactly deserve anything from the game having put in a performance that could be classed as the epitome of Sarriball – and by definition that is lots of the ball whilst doing nothing with it and Callum Hudson-Odoi on the bench. It’s not just people like me noticing it, the Chelsea fans made it pretty clear how they felt during the match, politely requesting that their manager considers handing in his resignation ASAP. It all led Neil Warnock to ponder whether it was ‘payback’ for him for everything that has happened over the years. Actually, Neil. Now you mention it, it could well be. He does have a point though; as good as the Premier League is, the officials are at least twice as bad. Some people are suggesting that West Ham’s Declan Rice might be the new Bobby Moore. And by that, I can only presume they mean pretty talented playing in a club side that is destined to continuously under-achieve. In the ‘wannabe 7th place’ derby, Everton beat their hosts 2-0 and new Ireland captain Seamus Coleman started what has to become a new tradition every single time

an Irish player plays against Rice from hereonin. Coleman nutmegged Rice to the joy of everyone who voted the midfielder Ireland’s young player of the year just days before he made his England debut. Crystal Palace have now won the match that has relegated teams from the Premier League three seasons in a row and, better still, left-back Patrick van Aarnholt has scored the decisive goal in each of those matches. PVA was at it again against Huddersfield who were finally put out of their misery like the terminally ill household pet. The Terriers have managed to get themselves out of the top-flight in joint-record quick time with six whole matches remaining. They share that dubious honour with Derby County. Oh, and by top-flight I mean in the sport that Sky invented – not before 1992. Ralph Hasenhuttl has banned Wifi from the team hotels whenever his Southampton team are on the road. He wants to stop the players from gaming which, and he is right on this one, is thought to be the next big addiction to hit professional footballers. And, it worked as the Saints marched past Brighton and moved further clear of the relegation zone whilst making their hosts think back to 1983, the season they got to an FA Cup semi-final (which they won) and got relegated. At least Brighton won’t be winning their FA Cup semi this season which is against City. Brendan Rodgers is doing alright at Leicester. Everyone expected him to get more goals out of Jamie Vardy than ‘Whispering Claude’ managed but Brentan has even turned Wes Morgan into a goal machine. Now that is management. Leicester beat Bournemouth 2-0.
