Ten cannabis clubs closed in Torrevieja Nicknamed, operation Mortalek, the final steps have now been taken to put pay to the cannabis industry in the town. The investigation first began on1st June in 2018 and since then the numerous associations that had sprung up have been investigated. The investigation has totalled up 12 raids and the detention of 38 people from nine different nationalities of whom five are now in prison. At the end of February 2019, the investigating police officers from the Guardia Civil put into practice the first two phases of closures and arrests that included seven outlets and the detention of 21 people, two of whom were sent to prison. At this point a total of €40,000 in cash was seized and drugs taken valued at more than €216,000. The documents obtained during these first phases were then analysed and led to more leads being established. The purge continued into phase three, four and even

five. In this stage of the operation five more establishments were raided, more than €5,000 of cash was seized along with 2,557 grams of marihuana, 855 grams of hashish and 90 cigars. Along with this, detectives uncovered a number of different pieces of equipment used in the preparation process. In the last phases of the operation, 17 people, 13 men and four women were arrested. The 17 detainees have been charged with the crimes of drug trafficking and belonging to a criminal group. Three have been placed in provisional detention and the remaining 14 are provisionally at liberty awaiting trial. Those arrested are aged between 25 and 57 years old. The courts have ordered that nine of the ten closed establishments must remain so for the next five years. The remaining establishment has already declared its permanent closure. Suzanne O’Connell

Torrevieja dances Sunday 5th May was a busy day for different events and competitions in Torrevieja. One of those with perhaps the highest attendance was the 7th National Dance Competition (Certamen nacional de danza Orbe 19) held at the International Auditorium. The venue was sold out as hundreds of dancers and their families descended on Torrevieja. The urban dance section took place from 11am and concluded at

around 3.30pm. There was no break as one category followed on from another until all the contestants crammed onto the stage to hear the announcement of the winners. Around 60 dance groups took part altogether from all over the country and considering the number of participants the organisation was good with very few technical hitches or stops to the publicised programme.

The range of different prizes was a little bewildering. The presentations began with recognition for individual dancers and then groups could win prizes for their dress, their presence on the stage as well there being bronze, silver and gold awards. Confusing though it might have been, it meant that nearly everyone came away with something to remember the event by. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Record catches NEWS: of little tunny Stand Up Paddle surfing (SUP) is becoming a popular world-wide sport and on Sunday, 5th May a stage of the Circuito Mediterráneo de Sup Race 2019 took place in Torrevieja. There are fourteen stages of the competition in total and Torrevieja played host to the seventh this weekend. Surfing is due to be an Olympic sport in Tokyo in 2020 and it is expected that paddle surfing will soon follow. The hosting of the competition is also seen as a bonus for Torrevieja because it is just out of the main tourist season. This enables the town to move towards its target of all-year round seasonal attractiveness. The actual distances involved vary according to the different categories and ages of the participants. The shortest distances are around 80 metres with 3.5 kilometres for the amateur category and 10.5 kilometres for the most experienced participants. The competition ran from 9am until 2pm when prizes were awarded.

The little tunny fish is a type of tuna with a strong flavour and a dark meat. Although the traditional fishing of sardines and anchovies is holding its own in 2019, they have been overshadowed by a sudden glut of tunny. The fishing fleets of Torrevieja have recently captured 29 ‘tuns’ of the stuff. The fish is being auctioned for between €2 and €2.80 at market, meaning

Charity fair On Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th May local charities were able to publicise their work by the sea front in Torrevieja. Around 20 different associations set up their stalls by the Hombre del Mar on the paseo maritime. This was an opportunity for them to show the public what they do as well as selling some of their merchandise to raise money. Entertaining those browsing through the stalls was the British choir, ‘Pop Goes Continued on page 5

that fishermen have collected around €70,000 for the catch altogether. Although they are called ‘little’ tunny it is hard to see why. Each fish weighs around 15 kilos and they can be eaten fresh or salted. They are from the same fish family as mackerel, tuna and anchovies. Catching tunny isn’t the main intention of the fishing fleets. They are really on the lookout for sardines and anchovies which are the most popular fish. However, in their efforts to catch

these most prized shoals, the fishermen often catch the fish that feed off them too, in this case the tunny. This is more usually the case towards the end of the spring months and into the summer when the tunny fish become hungry and come into the coast to search out their favourite prey. However, it looks like they are in the area a little earlier this year and are already filling the nets. The first wave of catches took place with 14 tons being landed on Friday last. This continued on Monday with another six and another nine on Tuesday 30th April. As quickly as the fish have flooded the market, they can disappear again. The little tunny is not a catch that the fishermen can rely on. Torrevieja’s fish market or ‘la lonja’ is a very busy one that is attractive to fishing fleets outside of the town itself. In 2018 a total of 2,739 tons of fish was auctioned with a value of more than five million euros. This was an improvement on 2017 which had seen a drop to around 3.9 million euros. The usual figure being around five or even six million euros. Other popular fish to catch include octopus and swordfish but the fishing boats are limited to how much of these they can bring in because of quotas. It is estimated that around 20 fish merchants go each day to the fish market to make their purchases at the auction, Most of them are acting on behalf of wholesalers serving large food chains and retail fish shops. BITE SIZE Go ahead given for two towers with proviso NEWS: Continued from page 3 the Choir’. This is the third year that they have come to Torrevieja to sing and this time there were some chairs available for those who wanted to sit and watch. These events are important to publicise the crucial work that the charities do and hopefully to recruit a few more volunteers to help as well.

Fibromyalgia day Fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome has its international day on May 12th. In recognition of this, Torrevieja will have a programme of activities taking place between May 6th and May 12th. The association that represents Fibromyalgia sufferers is ASIMEPP and they have presented their programme along with Councillor Carmen Morate. There will be a number of open days and all the activities will be free. Two conferences will take place along with yoga and tai chi workshops. On May12th the programme will conclude with an exhibition of tai chi at 11am by the Hombre del Mar on the paseo maritimo.

Amanecer school demands change The mothers and fathers of Amanecer primary school in Torrevieja went out onto the street on Friday 4th May to make their claims once more for a new school building. Currently the children and their teachers are located in temporary accommodation in the Mar Azul part of the town, a situation they’ve occupied since 2004. The protest took place at 6.30pm with families marching from the Plaza de la Constitución. The parents feel aggrieved that they have been promised a new building many times and still their children are waiting.

Life saving competition On the 4th and 5th May Torrevieja played host to the 7th Spanish rescue and lifesaving competition. The contest took place in the town’s municipal swimming pool. More than 200 sportsmen and Continued on page 8

The city council has approved a planning application for two blocks of apartments in Punta Prima provided an old anti-aircraft shelter is part of the package. The land to be used is designated as urban and so can be built on. However, the limiting factor is the height of the building. Now, the developer Gomendio has been asking for a higher building licence and the town council has agreed provided the builders also protect and provide public access to some local ruins of historical interest. The archaeological remains include barracks of the 19th century and an anti-aircraft shelter from the civil war. It is estimated that protecting these buildings will cost around €400,000 and councillor Fanny Serrano has placed the proviso on any concession to the construction company building higher. The land has been designated as building land since the mid-sixties and in 2017 the building licence was applied for. There is some confusion over the exact status of the site. Although it is recognised as protected by law as part of Valencian cultural heritage, it is not in fact listed as a Site of Local Relevance. Now, the project proposal made by the builder has been accepted and it looks as if both the towers and the museum can go ahead. The plans include that the building development and the museum complement each other. The foundations of the apartment blocks will include an underground gallery used as an anti-aircraft shelter by a Republican detachment

during the Civil War. The apartments will be built above it with public access from the outside. ‘The plan now is for the works licence to go ahead,’ explained councillor Serrano, ‘The refuge will be preserved and different relics will be able to be restored.’ The development of this project has been a little unusual as it has involved the commissioning of five archaeologists who were required to study the ruins, remove debris and seal access to prevent any further deterioration. This was carried out in June 2018. This important heritage site has been sadly neglected over the years. Parts of it are in ruins and were at one time incorporated into a chiringuito with use as an outside terrace. The remains that still exist were built in the 19th century and were first part of a defence initiative to stop smuggling on this part of the coast. Torrevieja was renowned as an area where this type of activity took place. Later the facilities were used during the Civil War as an anti-aircraft shelter by the republicans. Since then they have remained abandoned and largely overlooked by many passers by who wouldn’t know what it was. Local historians were aware of its existence but it has remained unmarked and unrecognised by the general public. It is hard to imagine that at one time artillery guns were located there to defend the coast from possible landings of Francoist troops. Suzanne O’Connell

Practice sport looking at the sea at Playa Flamenca The Department for Beaches has installed a fitness park on the promenade at Playa Flamenca, which will allow locals and holiday-makers to exercise whilst overlooking the seaviews. The Councillor for Beaches Luisa Boné,

explained that: "The concrete slab that was in the middle of the promenade, where the lifeguard stand was located, has now been used for the installation of this specialist equipment so that people can exercise in an scenic environment. Not only does this provide a positive and useful space for people, but has aesthetically improved the look of the area.” The work undertaken has seen the concrete slab improved and made safer by adding green rubber flooring to integrate the space into the grass of the seafront and the addition of four different fitness machines that use body weight to work different parts of the body. These have been placed facing the sea purposely so that people can enjoy the beautiful views while doing physical exercise.

La casa de Los Balcones – ruin or renovate? The manor house of Los Balcones may finally have a decision taken about its future. The house, which currently stands in a dilapidated and abandoned state, is in fact a protected property on the Plan General de Ordenación Urbana (PGOU). It has been protected since 1987 but is gradually being reduced to rubble as the courts debate its future. Now the Superior Court of Justice has agreed that a report can be made on whether the property could be judged to be in a state of ruin. If it is agreed that this is its current condition then it will allow authorities to demolish it. The building is in private ownership and the owners officially had a duty of

The councillor for urban development, Fanny Serrano, attributes the situation to previous governments. She claims that four years ago the town council tried to subsidise the repair of the building. However, actions were frozen by the court. It is a prime plot of land extending to 4,256 square metres and commands panoramic views of the natural lake. The building is one of the few examples of a type associated with the agricultural development of the land around Torrevieja’s natural lakes. Its gradual deterioration has been evident from the 80s onwards. Between 2011 and 2015 it lost part of its roof and in spite of fines being imposed on the owners the

obligation towards its maintenance. The fact that they have not honoured this is something that is also being chased through the courts. It does seem a shame that what was a relatively prodigious property should end up simply being demolished for lack of care. It is situated in a prominent part of the town, Los Balcones, and opposite the only four star hotel there is in Torrevieja. Some people feel that it might have been a show case for the town instead of gradually deteriorating over the years.

building continued to crumble. It is now estimated that it would take around €600,000 to restore it. A cost that is higher than that of rebuilding it completely. The owners have fenced off the area and propped up the front walls. However, it is claimed that they have been reluctant to take any restorative measures and have also avoided paying fines by claiming to have completed some modifications to it. Suzanne O’Connell

The rise of the far right – implications for Torrevieja The Spanish general election is over again, at least for the time being. The results have surprised many people. Votes for the right wing parties were split and the ultraright Vox stormed into the picture for the first time in Spanish politics since the days of Franco. The left wing PSOE party picked up from the PP’s losses and is now hoping to form an alliance with other left-leaning parties. As we look towards the local elections in May, the results of the general election contain some stark warnings for voters. If the results of the general election were replicated in Torrevieja then we could see a right wing alliance leading the town hall including a significant percentage of ultra-right councillors. Councillors who want to repeal the gender violence laws, see Gibraltar returned to Spain and gun laws relaxed.

form a far right allegiance that would dictate practice in Torrevieja for the next four years. Who are Vox? Vox was founded in 2013 as a split from the PP party. Until December 2018, they were virtually unheard of. Some support has come to them because of their direct opposition to regional autonomy and their belief in a united Spain. However, they bring with them many strong right-wing ideological view points that are reminiscent of other ultranationalistic groups. Vox do not agree with a woman’s right to choose an abortion. They have made it clear that they do not support outspoken women’s groups. They are derogatory of domestic abuse laws which they consider are unfair to men. They want to repeal the gender violence law.

The rise of Vox in Andalucia The rise of Vox was already evident in Andalucia’s elections in December 2018. Although this right wing, reactionary party would never obtain the right to form a government on their own, in league with other right wing parties they could. The three right wing parties of the PP (People’s Party), Ciudadanos (Cs) and Vox agreed to come together to form a right wing government in Andalucia. What had scared many voters in Spain and brought about such a high turnout at this general election was the fear that what happened in Andalucia could happen on a national scale.

They do not agree with same-sex marriage and candidates have spoken out about the need for therapy to cure homosexuality. They criticise multi-culturalism, want to stop immigration and believe that all immigrants should have to integrate more. They believe Gibraltar should belong to Spain and are strong believers in Spanish sovereignty above all else. They also want to loosen Spain’s gun laws. One piece of good news, however. They were forced to drop a homophobic Holocaust denier from their electoral list after a public outcry. Unfortunately two retired Spanish generals still stood as candidates in spite of their continued loyalty to the spectre of Franco.

What it means for Torrevieja If the voting pattern seen in the general election is repeated in the local elections in May we could see a reduction of PP councillors from the current 11 to six. However, Ciudadonas, according to the trend at the general election could have four or five councillors and Vox, could have another four. This would bring a combined total of at least 14 which would allow them to

A word of warning If the same pattern emerged as happened in Andalucia we could see the same three parties again grouping together. As a collaboration they stand for an intolerant Spain. As immigrants living in Spain and still unclear about the outcome of Brexit, this would be the worst case scenario. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE It was a rare good week for the pound; positive developments on Brexit appeared to give sterling a boost as news of a possible breakthrough in cross-party talks emerged. The Labour Party has agreed to push for a second referendum if the deal isn’t agreed in parliament, unless a general election is called. This approach may be tempered after the results of the local elections came in and saw huge losses for both Conservative and Labour and a swing towards pro-Remain parties and independent candidates, which suggests that a general election may not be the best approach for either party. This slowed the pound’s momentum towards the end of the week, but it wasn’t only Brexit causing movements in the market. Nationwide's house price index 0.4% higher in April, up by 0.9% from a year ago. The Bank of England kept the interest rate unchanged at 0.75. This was expected by the market, which forecast the approach given the caution of the Monetary Policy Committee given the uncertainty of Brexit. However, it wasn’t just the same old rates and announcements; the growth forecast was revised up to 1.5% this year, from 1.2% in February. The week of surprises seemed largely positive for the

pound, although news of more substance and positive action on Brexit maybe needed to maintain the momentum. After a widely-reported slowdown across the board, there was also some welcome good news from Europe this week. Italy has moved away from the recession zone after the economy expanded by 0.2%. In addition, Spain’s economy beat forecast to show growth of 0.7% in the same three months. Overall, the Eurozone showed 0.4%, beating forecast. The euro made gains against the US dollar after the surprise news; it strengthened 0.3% against the greenback after the data were released. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the euro. European markets finished lower after the Bank of England held interest rates, and earlier in the week, the weakerthan-expected numbers from China had a knock-on effect. Much of Europe enjoyed a break with May Day, or Labour Day, celebrations mid-week but next week, it’s likely that the market will return to business as usual and all eyes will turn to the European Central Bank, which is likely to look at the global picture and seek more evidence of a turnaround before making any sudden changes.

Quirónsalud leads patient care for international tourists and residents The healthcare industry is one of the sectors with the most promising economic future in the Valencian Community. The rapid growth in recent decades in Spain has been in terms of both the training of human talent and infrastructure investments. According to the Quirónsalud healthcare group, this is demonstrated by the ever increasing influx of Spanish and international patients seeking healthcare at its hospitals. A spokesperson for Quirónsalud told the Costa Blanca People, “Quirónsalud hospitals are international hospitals of excellence, equipped with a team of highly qualified professionals and cutting-edge technology. We provide you a wide range of medical specialities, hence making us an internationally recognised multidisciplinary centre both in the field of oncology surgery as well as in the other medical and surgical specialities. Having cutting-edge technology, at present, we are the best equiped private hospitals in the Valencian Community. With over 25 years of experience, around 800 people have worked and are working every day to provide care to its patients. Given their location; Valencia located in the city centre and Torrevieja in the tourist town par excellence, they have become a benchmark for health tourism and foreign citizens who seek to settle in these places.”

Total international guidance, a key feature for internationalisation Hyperspecialisation, be it terms of treatments or in specific countries, as well as "Total guidance"

of the entire hospital for the international patient, are the keys to the success to attract citizens from other nationalities who wish to undergo any kind of medical treatment outside their home country. Francisco Fiestras, the managing director of Quirónsalud Levante Region, said “Any hospital that wants to be an international facility must be oriented and set this way right from the beginning, what necessarily happens at an international admissions department that respects the culture of those patients, as “it does not make sense to treat a Russian or a French patient exactly in the same fashion.” Care, says Fiestras, needs to be absolutely oriented towards the patient, “all diagnostic tests are done based on a protocol so that everything is done on time, undergo clinical session with professionals to determine the treatment to be applied, and start it.” He concluded, “At Quirónsalud, we can proudly emphasise that we have an international department open 24 hours a day to cater to patients in any language at any time of the day, our hospitals also have specific wards for international patients and offer a translation service with eight interpreters at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and five interpreters at Quirónsalud Valencia besides many other languages.”

Sustainable decor environment. It is about choosing products that take minimal resources and can be reused to make sure we leave the world in a healthy state and create less waste.

Key concepts of sustainable decor:

More and more of us are considering how to live a more sustainable life, whether that is by cutting down on plastic, improving the air quality in our houses, or decorating with responsiblymade furniture, fabrics, and paints. There is no one style to sustainable decorating. The idea is not to create a particular look, but to create one that suits your style, in a way that ensures a lighter footprint on the planet and a healthier home. There are many ways you can make choices that are better for you, your family and the world - healthy planet, healthy people, healthy home. Reuse and rearrange the things you already have at home, and build on this with sustainable, locally designed objects and furniture. This includes using vintage, second hand and up-cycled pieces in your home. It also includes sustainably designed and sourced new

products, which use renewable resources, reduce your carbon footprint, and which are undertaken in an environmentally conscious way. Sustainable Decorating is about making choices which ensure there are fair trade and ethical processes in place around products you use in your home design and decoration. Choosing a new piece of furniture that has been produced in a sustainable way, or from recycled materials, alongside upcycled and vintage pieces, is a perfect way to go, and even adding one statement piece that may be up-cycled such as a gorgeous workbench as a feature kitchen island for example, in a modern home, can add so much character. The many aspects of decorating in this way are all slightly different in their meanings, but at the end of the day it is about design that is kind to both the people who live in the home and to the

• Sustainable design - the philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability. • Eco-Friendly - Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. This usually means products that contribute to green living or practices that help conserve resources like water and energy. Eco-friendly products also lessen contributions to air, water and land pollution. • Renewable Resources - any natural resource (such as wood or solar energy) that can be replenished naturally with the passage of time. • Carbon Footprint - Your carbon footprint relates to how much ‘energy’ is needed to produce something you use. One way to reduce this is by buying locally where you can or at least buying products which are sourced locally where possible. • Vintage – By choosing pieces from Op Shops, Second Hand stores and other places where you can select items that already exist and can be given new life in your home, you are reducing your impact on the world and often saving some cash. • Upcycled - Upcycling is taking an item that is no longer needed or wanted and giving it new life as something that is either useful or creative.

New lifeguard huts on Orihuela Costa beaches

The Department for Beaches has begun the installation of the eight new lifeguard and rescue huts, following the recently-awarded contract. The councillor of Beaches, Luisa Boné, has reported that "until now the rescue and lifeguard huts that were installed on the beaches were prefabricated modules that were rented every year. They were quite small with room for first aid treatment only." ADEAC, the body that awards the blue flag accreditations, urged the Town Hall to improve that provision and service offered and for that reason the Department of Beaches has designed the new life and rescue huts to have room for a range of functions and therefore improve the services

provided to beachgoers as well as to enhance the working conditions of rescue and lifeguard personnel and also improve the aesthetic look of the beaches. The huts are self-supporting buildings that contain both the outer shell and the inside facilities required to carry out the necessary services. Being a natural environment, all the huts have been designed in harmony with the environment, for example natural materials such as wood and prefabricated building systems are used that do not impact the environment where they are placed. Councillor Boné noted that "the hut is divided into two areas, one public, intended for the attention of beach users by professionals and another

private consisting of a dressing area, as well as a private toilets for staff ". Two huts were installed before Easter, one on the beach of La Glea at Campoamor and another in Cala Bosque, La Zenia and in two weeks time the programme is scheduled to finish with assembly on all of the beaches in Orihuela Costa. The eight huts have been designed in line with and to compliment the beach bar project that has been carried out in tandem by the council to unify the image of the facilities of the beaches of Orihuela and to give them a more modern and Mediterranean touch. The tender was carried out through a simplified open procedure and awarded for an amount of 172,969.50 euros.

Brit Father and son ‘may have come to harm’

The missing British father and son who vanished from Spain’s Costa del Sol ‘may have come to harm’, police have warned. Daniel and Liam Poole, aged 46 and 22, have not been seen or heard from since vanishing from Estepona on 1st April. The Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team are now working with Policia Nacional to help find the pair, from Burgess Hill, West Sussex. Detective Chief Inspector Emma Heater of Sussex Police said: “We are working closely with the Spanish Police. “One possibility that must be considered, as they have not contacted family or friends, is that they have come to harm. Their family are very concerned about them as they last heard from them on 1st April, the lack of contact is out of character for the pair. “The family are being supported by family liaison officers and are being kept informed. “We know that Daniel and Liam hired a grey Peugeot 308 car when they got to Spain but this has not been returned to the car hire firm. “We would like to hear from anyone who has seen them, the car or has any information about their whereabouts in Spain or any other location since 31st March.” The father and son flew to Spain on 31st March and checked into a hotel, believed to have been the Valle

Romano hotel. It comes after the brother of Daniel detailed the family’s ongoing heartache back in Sussex. Laurence Poole, 43, also from Sussex, said he is fearing the worst while Daniel’s other two children, aged 19 and 17, are ‘absolutely terrified’. “I’m beginning to fear the worst,” he said, “it’s been too long for them to be missing something’s not right. It’s so difficult because you want to be as positive as you can but you need to be realistic about the situation.” He added that it was still a complete mystery as to what could have happened to his brother and nephew. “I’ve got no clue as to what actually happened. There’s been so much speculation, people have told me he was there to buy a car and others said he was looking at a property along the Costa del Sol but we just don’t know. “The police seem to have no answers yet or if they do they are remaining tight lipped.” Laurence added that he knows something is wrong because every time he goes away Daniel makes sure to call his kids. “When he’s been away snowboarding or on a lads trip he makes sure to call his kids every day so we know something is up.” Anyone with information report online or ring 101 quoting Operation Pheasant.

Welcome to Coimbra

Coimbra is the third largest Portuguese city with 150.000 inhabitants and it is the biggest city in the central area of Portugal. Long ago, this site was occupied by the Celts, but the process of Romanisation brought a great cultural transformation to this region. The presence of the Romans is still visible in the various archaeological remains housed at the Museu Nacional Machado de Castro, built over the cryptoporticus of the Civita Aeminium, the forum of the Roman city. After them, between 586 and 640, came the Visigoths, who altered the name of the town to Emínio. In 711, it became a Moorish and Mozarab city. In 1064, the city was conquered by the Christian Fernando I of Castile and governed by the Mozarab Sesnando. The most important city to the south of the River Douro, it was for some time the residence of the Count Dom Henrique and Dona Teresa, the parents of the first King of Portugal, Dom Afonso Henriques, who was born here. It was the latter king who integrated the city into the Portuguese territory in 1131. Dating from this time are some of the city´s most important monuments: the Sé Velha (Old Cathedral) and the churches of São Tiago, São Salvador and Santa Cruz; representing the religious authority and the various orders that became established here. Coimbra was the setting for the forbidden love of Dom Pedro I (1357-67) and Dona Inês, a lady at court. Inês was executed at the orders of the king Dom Afonso IV, who saw in this romance the danger of Portugal being submitted to the rule of Castile. An inspiration to poets and writers, their story still

forms a major part of the city's rich heritage. Coimbra was the capital of Portugal during the Middle Ages, but it was the Renaissance that transformed the city into a place of knowledge, when Dom João III (1521-57) decided to move the University to the city on a definitive basis, whilst at the same time numerous colleges were created to provide an alternative to the official form of teaching. In the 17th century, the Jesuits arrived in the city, immediately announcing their presence with the building of the Sé Nova (New Cathedral). In the following century, the royal work instituted by Dom João V (1706-50) was to enrich some of Coimbra´s monuments, including the University. Dom José I (1750-77) also introduced some alterations into the city through the influence of his minister Marquês de Pombal, particularly in the field of education. At the beginning of the 19th century, the French invasions and the Portuguese liberal wars were to mark the beginning of a period of great agitation that brought no great developments to the city. Since then, it has been the students who have brought most changes to Portugal's quintessential university town. There are several routes that you can follow to discover more about the heritage to be found in Coimbra. Following the layout of the city until the 19th century, we suggest that you begin with two walking tours, one through the Upper Town and the other through the Lower Town. Coimbra, is home of Coimbra University, one of the oldest in Europe, founded in Lisbon in 1290 by king Dinis and then transferred to Coimbra in 1537

by King João III. The old University buildings are situated on the top of a hill, which overlooks the city and the river. It is well worth a visit. You enter the old part of the University through an Iron Gate with stone works from the XVII century in manierist style. Inside the gate is the enormous University Patio, with a large statute of João III. Beside the gate, to the left when entering, you will see the long low palace wing with several rooms that worth a visit. The University Library from the beginning of the XVIII century is in the far-left corner and is well worth taking the tours that are provided. If you're here in the end of April or beginning of May make it a point to see the students party Queima das Fitas, with all the students singing Fado and burning their ribbons at the end of the school year. It is the biggest student party in Europe with the participation of all the 30,000 students of the University The University's Eighteencentury clock stands in the right hand corner of the courtyard domineering the skyline. Next to it is a double staircase leading to other parts of the University. Some of the students still wear their black suits and capes, pinned with a colourful ribbon indicating the student's course of study. There are also tears on their capes, which indicate the student's romantic conquests. Another highlight in Coimbra is the Baixa, on the way there you will visit the old cathedral from the XII century, in typical Portuguese romanesque style. The Baixa is the part of the city down by the river with most traditional shopping. It is full of narrow streets and crowded shops, banks, churches, cafés, hotels and walks to stroll along the Mondego Rivers' banks.

Where did we go wrong?

The other man

Our two daughters have turned out to be a bitter disappointment. They've had every opportunity imaginable. We bought them cars, paid for their mobile telephones, gave them deposits for houses which they frittered away on clothes, partying and holidays. Our eldest has ended up living on benefits with her deadbeat boyfriend, and our youngest is refusing to find a job as she says she will also do better on the dole. We are heartbroken. We didn't raise them this way.

I have been 'the other man' in a relationship with a married woman for seven years. I want her to leave her husband, but she feels she has everything to lose. We have talked about marriage and having our own family and she says she dearly wants a life with me, but it's not possible. I don't know what to do but I am at the end of my patience and something needs to change.

Children need to be taught how to prepare to live independently right from the start. You gave them every material thing they needed, rather than teaching them how to be responsible. They are taking the easy option choosing to live on benefits. It might be too late to help them now, but in the meantime you must stop the handouts, and help them to realise the value of money.

You are obviously not happy with the situation. You have two choices here. You can leave this unfulfilled relationship and look for someone who wants what you want, or, you can decide to settle for the disappointing relationship you already have with this woman. If you don't know what to do, you could have a few weeks separation (with no contact), and see how you both feel at the end of it. In the meantime, I think you would benefit from talking to someone. A trained counsellor will help you to work through your feelings.

Downpours boost summer water supply Recent torrential rain, reaching up to 17.3 centimetres (6.8 inches) on the East Coast, has helped replenish ailing reservoirs which have been struggling to remain topped up after several years of either drought or wellbelow average rainfall. Water sources, including rivers, wells and manmade lake-sized deposits, increased by 0.7 percent. The average household in Spain uses around 41 cubic metres, or 41,000 litres, of water per month, meaning this extra volume has proven very welcome - enough to supply just over 79 homes for the next year. At present, the country's reservoirs hold 32,779 cubic hectometres - nearly 32.8 billion litres - and are up to 58.4 percent of their capacity. This is still considerably lower than a year ago, however, when reservoirs stood at 70.78 percent, or 39,690 cubic hectometres, and even less than a decade ago when the nation's water reserves held 41,025 cubic hectometres, or were 73.1 percent full. Reservoirs among those that rose the most over the weekend were in the Comunidad Valenciana, which went up by 2.45 percent, or 60 cubic hectometres - a much-needed increment, given that even now they are only 37.68 percent full, as it is one of the parts of the country most troubled by drought over the past six years or so. Murcia, a region which has always suffered from water shortages, was hit by over seven centimetres (nearly three inches) of rain, which bolstered the Segura river basin considerably and means a full supply is guaranteed for farmers and residential homes over spring and summer. Regional farming association ASAJA-Murcia says the deluge constituted 'a true relief' for members' parched fields.

A leading consumer association has warned members of the public not to answer calls with one of five country prefixes, since they could end up with a huge telephone bill as a result. Those who know someone in any of the countries listed and normally speak to them by phone should check the number on their screen before picking up, and ignore it if they do not recognise it. FACUA-Consumers in Action has had numerous reports of calls from numbers with the country codes 225 (Côte d'Ivoire, formerly the Ivory Coast), 233 (Ghana), 234 (Nigeria), 355 (Albania), and 387 (Bosnia), who end up getting charged just for answering. Where a mobile or landline customer does fall victim to one of these additional-tariff number scams, FACUA says, they should notify their operator in writing to advise them and request an itemised bill which breaks down the cost of the rogue call. The customer can then opt not to pay this part of the bill and, if the phone company sends reminders and the customer still does not pay, the operator is not permitted to cut their line off. This is harder where bills are paid by direct debit, but through online banking, the customer can normally 'bounce' the payment in full and restore it to their account, then request an amended bill from their provider.

According to Order number PRE/361/2002 of February 14, Article number 8 states that a telecommunications company is not allowed to cut off a customer who has contacted them to dispute a bill or who does not pay a charge relating to additional-tariff numbers. Some private-sector companies run their businesses using additional-tariff numbers, where the customer is charged if they answer, and, although not ethical, is not illegal. FACUA says if a phone customer refuses to pay for a call they have been scammed by, but does not want their operator to block access to other additional-tariff lines, they should put this in writing to the Consumer Arbitrators' Board or the Secretary of State for Telecommunications.

F

inally found the home you’ve been searching for? Great! But what do you do now? How do you reserve it? What are you required to do next? All great questions, and here are the simple answers: Make an offer! Take guidance from your Real Estate Agent, regarding how much your offer needs to be. If your future home is in a sought after area, and other properties are selling fast, then your offer should be pretty close to the asking price. Sometimes, paying the full price maybe the only way to go, especially if it’s been priced correctly for sale in the first place. Reserve it! Once your offer has been accepted, you’ll have to pay a deposit. You’ll either be required to pay by a credit card or bank transfer. If you’re being asked to

pay your deposit in cash, make sure you have this written into your reservation contract. Credit card payments tend to offer good exchange rates. And, if you are given the choice, it’s always better to pay in the currency of the country you are in, i.e. Euros in Spain. For bank transfers, you can use a currency company, i.e. Moneycorp, however if you haven’t already set up your account with them, you may need to just make the transfer from your bank direct. Most times, your deposit will need to be paid before you’ve had time to activate your account with a currency company. If you’re not in a position to pay a deposit, don’t make an offer! This can be very upsetting for a home seller, especially if you’ve made a low offer, and they’ve taken their time to accept it. If you’re only interested in knowing if the homeowner would be open to discussing an offer, then take advice from your Real Estate Agent instead. It’s unfair allowing the homeowner to think they’ve sold because they accepted your offer when, in reality, you had no intention to move forward with the purchase. When you’ve set your heart on a property, the only way you’ll be able to secure it, is by paying a deposit. If your deposit money is not available, you’re not ready to make an offer just yet. Once your deposit has been paid, the property will be reserved for you and only you, as this will stop anyone else from buying your future home in Spain! Buying? Enjoy the journey! Tax deductions on rent-to-buy

Good news for anyone with a rent-to-own property in Spain – the Spanish Supreme Court has declared in a recent ruling that money paid for a rent-to-buy home scheme is tax deductible in the IRPF tax declaration for investment in property. This means that the High Court takes this type of lease to be a type of construction of the taxpayer’s permanent residence, i.e. the payment of money to the developer. It considers it as the purchase of a main residence is being in both cases, so that you, as the taxpayer, can benefit from the deduction for the purchase. Just be sure you check the right box when filing your tax returns in Spain. Although the state-wide deduction for investment in a

main home was abolished as of 1st January 2013, there are still deductions in some Autonomous Communities of Spain that taxpayers can apply to the amounts they pay in each year for the purchase of a house. The Supreme Court clarifies that the renter’s intention to eventually buy the house must be clear, since only then is it possible to consider that when each monthly rental fee was paid, they were actually paying towards ownership of the home. In the case resolved in the ruling of the High Court, the taxpayer in question had signed a contract with a cooperative, by which he assumed the commitment to exercise the right to purchase after 10 years of renting the house. During this period, each

"partner" in the cooperative was jointly responsible for the part of the mortgage corresponding to the property finally transferred. The payment of this mortgage was made through the rent. For its part, the cooperative was contractually obliged not to transfer the property to any person other than the co-operator, provided that the latter complied with the payment of the rent. This is in accordance with a Decree approved by the Community of Madrid that articulated various legal instruments for the purchase of real estate in Spain. All this leads the Supreme Court to conclude that the attribution of the rented home was made with the intention of acquiring it as property, so that the amounts paid as rent were payment for the purchase of the property. In my opinion, this ruling opens the door for us to consider that, in the case of rentals, when the intention to acquire the property is undoubted, the amounts paid should be considered under the tax option "acquisition of housing" (“adquisición de vivienda”). This holds true even before the renter has exercised their right to buy.

Spanish elections and housing The formation of a new government in Spain is going to depend on a long arm-wrestle between the Socialist Party (PSOE), the winner of the recent general election, and the leftist Unidas Podemos, which came in fourth place. There is a lot at stake for both of its leaders. Pedro Sánchez is ecstatic about a victory that puts the PSOE back in the lead after losing the last three elections. The win will probably allow him to remain in office, where he arrived in June of last year after leading a successful no-confidence vote against Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party (PP). Sánchez wants to try to lead a minority government all by himself on the strength of his 123 seats in Congress. But this is not enough to get himself reinstated – it takes 176 deputies for an overall majority – and Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias has clearly stated that this time he is not ready to provide free support for Sánchez as he did after the noconfidence motion. This time, Iglesias wants to be part of government, although he knows it’s going to be a long battle to get there. The Socialists are in no hurry, and everything seems to indicate that little progress will be made on this front until after the local, regional and European elections

of 26th May. Unquestionably, Spain is going through a period of political instability with three general elections in the last four years, followed by a censure motion some months ago that brought the current Socialist Government into power on the back of a fragile coalition that has since fallen apart and forced the Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to call another General Election, which took place on Sunday 28th May. What do the main parties propose in terms of housing policies at a time when rising housing costs in Spanish cities and some coastal areas are a political hot potato? Here are the main points from each manifesto: PSOE – Socialists centre left • Establish a basic emancipation income for young people on low salaries to help

them afford housing • Make public land available to build more social housing for rent PODEMOS – Far left • Impose rent controls and indefinite rental contracts • Limit mortgage debts to the value of the property for borrowers in distress • Make banks pay past and present mortgage related taxes • Prohibit evictions with no alternative housing • Confiscate empty homes for social housing So, as things stand, the policies most likely to be on the agenda of the next Government of Spain will come from the above. Property pundits believe that this would be bad news for funds investing in Spain, and probably not good for the housing market in general, but only time will tell.

Bingeworthy Box Sets

Luther

Luther is a British crime drama television series starring Idris Elba as the title character DCI John Luther, written by Neil Cross. Elba has received critical acclaim for his role as John

Luther and has been awarded a Critics' Choice Television Award, Golden Globe Award, NAACP Image Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance. The series has also received 11 Primetime Emmy Award nominations in various categories, including four nominations of Elba for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. John Luther is a Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) working for the Serious Crime Unit in series one, and the new "Serious and Serial" unit from series two. A dedicated police officer, Luther is obsessive, possessed, and sometimes violent. However, Luther has paid a heavy price for his dedication; he has never been able to prevent himself from being consumed by the darkness of the crimes with which he deals. For Luther, the job always comes first. His dedication is a curse and a blessing, both for him and those close to him. In the very first episode of the series he investigates brilliant psychopath and murderer Alice Morgan. Ultimately he is unable to arrest her due to lack of evidence, but as the programme progresses, she becomes both his nemesis and unlikely companion.

After Life

Tony (Ricky Gervais) had a perfect life. But after his wife Lisa suddenly dies, Tony changes. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it's like a Super Power -- not caring

about himself or anyone else -- but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know. After news that Netflix is set to renew the show for a second series, Gervais said, “I have never had a reaction like this before. It’s been insane. And heartwarming. But now I have to make sure the second season is even better so I’ll probably have to work much harder than usual. Annoying really.” “At the end of the day, it’s all those little mundane interactions that actually save your life — they’re the variety of life, they stop you from feeling too sorry for yourself. He’s got to take the dog for a walk, he’s got to go to work to make money to get drunk, and after all that, time heals,” Gervais explained. “After Life” is a Netflix original series from Derek Productions, and the series is created, written and directed by Ricky Gervais. “After Life has moved audiences from laughter to tears around the world and we are thrilled to announce that Ricky Gervais will be back with a second season on Netflix. We are so proud to play host to Ricky’s brilliant stand up comedy, specials, original films and series and join in the joy of the fans with his latest hit,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer, in a statement.

Did Spaniards build Stonehenge? A candidate in the 21-strong shortlist for the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, Stonehenge represents one of the UK's greatest mysteries. Like the only surviving member of the original seven wonders - the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo, Egypt - how this huge circle of standing stones was built has always been part of the great unknown of Europe's most ancient history. However, little is known about the actual builders: London's Natural History Museum has revealed that they could well have been Spanish or Portuguese. Experts in prehistoric genetics compared DNA from the remains of late Neolithic and early Bronze Age humans from what is now known as Europe, and found that that of the vast majority of those living in the modern-day UK were almost identical to that of humans living on the Iberian Peninsula. Stonehenge is believed to have been built in what is now the county of Wiltshire back then, and humans from the Iberian Peninsula are thought to have been responsible for introducing the tradition of constructing monuments with megaliths, or gigantic stones, into the north-western part of the continent. In fact, the UK probably had more Spanish and Portuguese expats 5,018 years ago than it does today: Tom Booth, co-author of the research, says no 'detectable evidence' of native British hunter-gatherers' DNA was found in the remains of Neolithic farmers after the arrival of the Iberians. So, in effect, the Spanish and Portuguese migrants ended up replacing born-and-bred Brits.

Turkey, Iberia, France, Wales‌ According to the research, the largest migratory movement across Europe was in around 6,000 BC - or three millennia before work started on Stonehenge. Farming communities set off en masse from Anatolia, now Turkey, and split into two branches: one group followed the river Danube and ended up in central Europe, whilst a second band of exiles crossed the Mediterranean in 4,000 BC to Iberia. These nomads, generations later, began to spread out through France and then Wales, their point of entry into the UK, and dispersed across the south-west of England. Thousands of years of migration led to Iberians, distantly descended from the Anatolians, becoming the dominant population in Britain, at least in the southern and western areas. Although the climate and conditions for farming would have been very different in England and Wales to in Spain and Portugal, the long journey north and west across Europe would have given them plenty of time to adapt their practices to enable them to survive by the time they reached Britain, according to another co-author of the research, Mark Thomas, of University College London. The small groups of native British hunter-gatherers, who would have lived largely on plants and molluscs, were replaced over time by Neolithic migrants, most of whom were farmers - not because the two groups never mixed, says Tom Booth, but because it was likely that the British population was too small to have left any real genetic legacy, and

perhaps the vast majority of the ethnicity had fizzled out long before the Stonehenge workers were born.

Early native Brits were black and Mediterraneans were pale Research has already shown the physical differences in typical Turkish-Iberian migrants and native British huntergatherers: last year, in February, Tom Booth's team at the Natural History Museum stunned the world by revealing that the earliest Brits were very darkskinned with black, curly hair and blue eyes. This was discovered after examining the fossilised skull of whom the team dubbed The Cheddar Man - because his remains were found 100 years earlier in Cheddar Gorge, Somerset - and extracting a few milligrams of bone powder, which enabled them to build up an entire genome profile which made it possible to create an accurate reconstruction of the head (shown in the third picture). Thought to have been living in Britain between 10,000 and 11,700 years ago before which the UK populations were periodically wiped out in their entirety during different ice ages, meaning they left no DNA in the pool - The Cheddar Man's DNA is shared with at least one in 10 members of the country's population with white British ancestry alive today. The Natural History Museum team believes white skin came along later in Europe - an evolutionary adaptation created by the emergence and diffusion of farming practices which would have changed humans' diets, providing them with less vitamin D. Earlier diets would

have included molluscs and oily fish, sources of vitamin D, which is necessary for calcium absorption and healthy bones. Without dietary vitamin D, humans' only source would have been sunlight, and paler skin absorbs more of this than darker skin. But the black-skinned British natives were still around, in very reduced numbers, by the time the TurkishIberians arrived - even though, by then, these Mediterranean tribes were paleskinned with light-coloured hair and brown eyes.

When Spanish people were blue-eyed blondes Spaniards were, in fact, mostly blonde with blue eyes and very pale skin until about 1,200 years ago, tending to resemble present-day Europeans of Scandinavian and Germanic descent, meaning their current tendency towards dark hair and eyes is very modern, in evolutionary terms. Whilst it is difficult to define the appearance of a 'typical' native Spaniard, they are, on average, darker in hair and eye colour than today's humans of northern European descent and, although white-skinned, are marginally less pale and tend to tan very quickly and be less prone to sunburn.

This change from a Nordic profile, as depicted in the fourth picture of Spanish Visigoths, to what is now looked upon as a Mediterranean typology began to appear with the migration and settlement of the Moors from north Africa in the eighth century: rather than colonising the peninsula, they moved in and expanded, mixed marriages and mixed-race children were common, eventually giving Mediaeval Spaniards an appearance closer to that of the Arab community they lived with. Also, a mix of early gypsy origin is present in some modern-day Spaniards: this ethnic, known in Spain as gitanos, are thought to have made their way from the Punjab region of India across eastern Europe centuries ago, and their communities, also, mixed with born-and-bred Spaniards. From as early as the year 7,100 BC, when the bulk of human evolution is believed to have been completed and 'modern man' first established, up to the beginning of the Mediaeval era, skin colour had less to do with geographical origin than it does today, Tom Booth said a year ago when unveiling the mock-up of The Cheddar Man.

Sheridan Smith

BAD COOKING HABITS YOU NEED TO STOP You might not be a Michelin-starred chef, but you probably think you at least somewhat know what you’re doing in the kitchen. Simple dishes like scrambled eggs and stir-fry might be easy for you to whip up without even using a recipe. And you know some common food preparation slip-ups could make you sick. But there are some bad habits you probably don’t even notice. Lots of home cooks have bad habits that they don’t think are doing any damage, but that have been changing the quality and taste of their food. Here are the bad cooking habits you need to stop right now ...

Opening the oven Every time you open the oven, you’re letting out the precious hot air your food needs to cook. When you close the oven again, it can take some time before the temperature evens out where you want it. Yes, it’s tempting to open the oven to see how your food is cooking, but do what you can to resist the urge. Use your oven light instead and peek through the window. Allowing the temperature to fluctuate can mess with your cook times and give you an undercooked or unevenly cooked meal. Overfilling pans To save time, you might be tempted to throw all your ingredients in the pan at once. But if you fill your pan to the brim, you could actually end up with a less than satisfactory result. Overfilling a pan causes less of the

surface area to be available to the food as it cooks. This can increase cook time and leave you with a mushy result, rather than a crispy edge or a nice sear. Too many cold ingredients added simultaneously can also lower the temperature of the pan. Exercise your patience and cook food in batches if your pan is too small.

a sharp knife cuts right through whatever is in front of you. A nicely sharpened knife also cuts down on prep time. That being said, different knife cuts should be used for different tasks. Knowing how to properly use these basic knife cuts will make you look like a master chef.

Old and expired spices There’s a reason spices come with an expiration date. Expired spices likely won’t give you food poisoning, but they do lose their flavour. Using spices that are past their prime can result in a recipe with less of the taste you expected. Toss your expired spices and organize the remaining ones to best serve your use. Cutting boards Always chop your vegetables on a separate cutting board from raw meat. The cross-contamination can result in you or your family members ending up with food poisoning from foodborne bacteria. In addition to using a separate cutting board, make sure you wash the cutting board that held the raw meat effectively. Those nooks and crannies can hide some nasty germs. Sharpen knives Contrary to what you might have guessed, using a dull knife is actually far more dangerous than using a sharp one. While a dull knife can slip and slide,

Non-stick everything Many home cooks turn to their non-stick pan to cook anything and everything: eggs, salmon, bacon, you name it. But sometimes, a cast-iron skillet is a better choice. When you repeatedly expose a non-stick pan to high heat you risk the pan deteriorating as a result, which could end up releasing toxic particles into your kitchen and your food. Foods such as crêpes, omelettes and fried eggs can (and should) be cooked over a lower heat in your non-stick pan. But meats and other high-heat recipes are much better made on a cast-iron skillet.

Wrong oil Most types of oil are a healthy choice for cooking, as they are rich with healthy fats and nutrients. However, not all oils behave the same when you cook with them. Certain oils (coconut oil, for example) are better for use at lower temperatures because they have a low smoke point. After exceeding the temperature of their smoke point, these oils will begin to smoke and give a different taste. Additionally, it’s important to keep in mind that some types of olive oil are better to use for certain cooking tasks than others. While a high-quality olive oil will make a big difference in terms of taste if you’re using it to finish off a dish or make a salad dressing, you’re wasting money by using a high-quality olive oil to sauté over high heat. When cooking over high heat in a pan, the compounds in higher-quality olive oils that give them their unique taste may begin to break down.

Seasoning Fresh herbs are well worth the investment. But if you don’t cook with them

correctly, you could be missing out on a lot of the flavour they add to a dish. Timing is everything when it comes to herbs. Woodier herbs like rosemary and thyme can be added early since they are strong enough to withstand cooking. Softer herbs such as coriander and parsley, however, should be added at the end. Don’t be afraid to use spices, salt and other seasonings liberally. This is one of the many mistakes people make when cooking grilled chicken or other meats they’re afraid to use salt. Salt and spices are essential for adding flavour to your food. If you’re wondering why that restaurant burger is so much better than the one you grilled at home, this could be partially why. Use more seasoning than you think you need, because chances are you’re underestimating. Stirring and poking Cooking can be a test of patience. Try not to poke, stir and prod your food too often as it cooks. While something like a creamy batch of scrambled eggs may require constant attention and movement, most dishes do not. By moving the food around too often, you’re missing out on the texture changes that happen when you allow a food to cook for longer in one place.

Starbucks summer line-up Starbucks is signalling the start of warmer weather by rolling out its summer menu, and investors can expect sales to heat up as customers clamour for its chilled drinks. Even in the chilly winter months, cold beverages have helped Starbucks’ sales grow. So the company’s strategy has focused its innovation on cold options, like cold foam. Another chilled beverage innovation, Nitro Cold Brew, is available in about half of its U.S. stores as Starbucks targets nationwide availability by the end of year before being rolled out across Europe. In its second quarter, the company reported that sales at stores open at least 12 months rose 3 percent, beating Wall Street’s estimates of 2.9 percent. Starbucks attributed the growth to a 3 percent increase in average customer ticket. Nearly half of the ticket growth came from customers trading up to pricier drinks like the Cloud Macchiato. Additionally, cold drinks are helping attract customers into stores during all parts of the day, way past the busy morning rush. Afternoon performance during the latest quarter was the best it’s been in three years.

“We have seen when we introduce more of our cold beverage innovation, it’s improving afternoons and our non-members [of Starbucks Rewards] tend to shop with us in the afternoons,” COO Roz Brewer said on the quarterly conference call with analysts recently. But, one cold option has been getting less love. Starbucks has been moving away from limited-time Frappuccinos. The last one to make a noticeable impact on sales was the Unicorn Frappuccino, which was introduced in April 2017. Since then the Seattlebased company has largely failed to replicate its success with another version of the blended drink. This year, its summer menu is bringing back three popular versions of the blended drink without introducing any new Frappuccino options. “We’re learning that it’s an ‘and’ and not an ’or,” Brewer said in an interview, adding that Frappuccinos will always stay on its menu. The local branches of Starbuck here in Spain, which includes Zenia Boulevard, will be adding the new range of chilled drinks to its menu across the summer months including fruit-based beverages, chilled coffees and crushed ice coolers.

TOP COOKBOOKS OF 2019 SO FAR Of all the books you own, we’d bet our bottom dollar it’s your cookbooks that are among the most well-thumbed and loved. And probably the most stained. After all, everyone knows that the more treasured a recipe book is, the more likely it is to be filled with blotches and marks. No self-respecting cook is without shelves bulging with their favourite recipe books - some of which may have even helped spark their passion for cooking in the first place. Besides, who wants to leave their pristine laptop within range of oil spills, flour explosions, and sticky catastrophes? Cookbooks are designed to sit in the thick of it, weathering the worst messes your culinary inexperience can throw at them. These are the cookbooks that will have you reaching straight for your pots and pans and seeking out the very freshest ingredients to whip up some culinary delights. Some are timeless classic, whilst others are hot off the press ...

Mary Berry’s Quick Cooking: BEST NEW COOKBOOK FOR 2019 No roundup of best cookbooks would be complete without an offering from the nation’s favourite baker, Mary Berry. This is her latest cookbook, with over 120 recipes from a mouth-watering 30-minute beef ragu to a delectable passionfruit and orange cheesecake. Accompanying her new BBC series, it’s a godsend for those of you strapped for time, with 20- and 30-minute meals galore – many of which taste and look as though they took longer. There’s no skimping on the photography, making this a proud addition to any coffee table, as well as being a bible for any working kitchen. It’s packed with invaluable practical advice too. Top tip - don’t miss the Moroccan summer salad, it’s delish.

Plenty by Yotam Ottolenghi: BEST VEGETARIAN COOKBOOK If you love food, then you’ll love this award-winning, stylish and innovative book from the mastermind that is Ottolenghi. Even if you don’t cook, you’ll enjoy

pouring over the dazzling food photography. Although Ottolenghi isn’t vegetarian himself, you’d never known from his outstanding vegetable dishes, all of them inspired by his Mediterranean roots. Most come from his column ‘The New Vegetarian’ from the Guardian Weekend magazine, with some added extras thrown in. We like the sensibly organised sections on the likes of pasta and couscous, aubergines, cooking greens, squashes or fruit. Don’t be tempted to rule it out just because you’re a meat eater - this book should be a staple in any food-loving household. Among our favourites are the artichoke gratin and burnt aubergine with tahini.

Pinch of Nom by Kay Featherstone and Catherine Allinson: BEST SLIMMING COOKBOOK For anyone looking to drop a few waist

sizes, this newbie cookbook is a must. Not only is it beautifully designed - a real pleasure to flick through - but the recipes are as tasty and hearty as they are healthy and non-fattening. They’re also genuinely practical to make, even on a work night when the last thing you feel like doing is filling your work surface with kitchen scales, pans and cooking utensils. No wonder Pinch of Nom has become the UK’s fastest selling non-fiction book (it sold over 200,000 copies in the first three days). It all started with the authors’ blog of the same name, which has helped thousands of people lose weight while still eating appetizing food. We can vouch for the fact that fans of the blog will not be disappointed, as well as the fact that - joy of joys - no recipes will send you on a hunt for bizarre ingredients that can only be found in the likes of posh Notting Hill delis.

Delia’s How to Cook by Delia Smith: BEST COOKBOOK FOR BEGINNERS Delia’s How to Cook TV series was one of the most talked about shows of 2009. It was even famously credited with raising sales of cranberries by 200 per cent after appearing in one of the programme’s recipes. This is the book that came out of it and we think it stands out for two main reasons. First, it’s a step-by-step guide, making it a winner for amateurs right through to those with more experience in the kitchen who could do with a bit of refinement in their cooking. In other words, not only does it teach the basics, but it helps you realise you don’t have to give up on recipes that don’t go to plan. Second, it’s Delia and what’s not to love about this traditional, no-nonsense chef whose recipes seem to be foolproof time after time?

Use your loaf Perhaps more than any other staple food, bread routinely gets a hammering. For such a wholesome product – in theory – you're never far from headlines claiming bread is the devil incarnate. It's true that modern, industrialised bread has strayed far from its humble origins to something almost unrecognisable in flavour, texture and health benefits. But to tarnish all bread with the same brush is far from helpful. The latest drama involves propionate, a preservative used to prevent mould in commercial bread baking. According to a study from Harvard University, propionate could trigger a "cascade of metabolic events" potentially leading to insulin resistance and weight gain. Though the study in humans was limited, the implication is that the acid, which is widely used across the food industry, could increase risk of Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Chris Young, coordinator of the Real Bread Campaign, isn't surprised by the findings. Propionate is commonly found in bread, often listed as E280, E281, E282 or E283 depending on its form. "Over years several questions have been raised over this and other additives used. Calcium propionate [E282], for example, has been linked to hyperactivity in children and skin irritations in bakery workers, and propionates have been found to lead to a risk of migraine or eczema," says Young. All food additives pass testing, but Young says these are often on small groups and then presumed safe. Over the years, "one by one they get knocked off that list, so we're not sure if they're safe at all. We find anecdotally people say they can't eat industrial loaves and don't know why. Is it one or a cocktail of additives that's causing these problems?" Young points to nitrogen trichloride, a flour bleaching agent banned in 1949 after giving dogs epilepsy; or potassium promate, a "flour improver" which in 1990 was prohibited in the UK as a possible carcinogen. The Real Bread Campaign is calling for better labelling. When you buy a staple like butter or milk, you're pretty sure what't it's going to be made of: milk,

perhaps with some salt thrown in. Bread, however, can contain up to 26 ingredients and additives. "Real bread is an ancient food with three ingredients, something most of us can eat perfectly safely, unless we have an allergy or intolerance. It can be made without additives, which, while they have a purpose, are not necessary." Mould isn't an issue with real bread, Young explains, because it just goes stale. But when bread is wrapped in plastic, it creates a warm, sweaty environment perfect for mould to grow. Aside from anti-mould, additives are used to soften or relax dough, make it rise quickly, to create fluffy loaves, for uniformity or for colour. "Rather than using the skills of bakers who know how dough behaves, it's just banging in a load of additives to standardise the process," says Young. With so many options on offer – wholemeal, wholegrain, multigrain, sliced white, rye, sourdough, high fibre, low FODMAP – choosing the best option can be tricky. Myriad claims of 'healthier' breads, like gluten-free or fortified, it's easy to be sucked into thinking proper bread is bad.

Mediumship charity evening ACTs donate to Paradise Rescue

If you’re looking for something a little different to do then you might be interested in taking part in an evening of mediumship to be held on Wednesday 15th May at 7pm. Four mediums will be present including Belinda Bradley, Sammy Fitzsimmons, Morag Bullock and Debbie Blevins. The evening is being held to raise money for the San José Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela. It will take place at Sacko´s Bar in ‘El Limonar’ Torrevieja and costs €5 to enter. There will be a raffle with prizes sponsored by the Guiding Light Spiritual Sanctuary, Avenida Jaca 31, San Luis, Torrevieja. All the proceeds raised will go to the orphanage. The San José Obrero Orphanage is run by the church and is home to around 70 children who both live and are educated there. The children are at the orphanage for a number of different reasons including that their parents are unable to take care of them. Donations have been used to buy some quite basic items for the children who range from six to 18 years old.

However, more items are always needed, particularly with changes in seasons and the need for summer clothing. It is hoped that as many people as possible will come along to support the event. Suzanne O’Connell

Members of ACTS theatre group, based in Benijófar were delighted to visit Paradise Rescue Kennels, Benferri to present the owner Colleen Jay with a donation of €500. Colleen has spent twenty years in Spain, rescuing,

rehabilitating and rehoming dogs and this amount will be a massive help in the costs of caring for as many as a hundred dogs. Following its successful production of “The Play That Goes Wrong”, ACTS is

now planning for its Autumn production. In the meantime why not solve its murder mystery “A Shot in the Shadow of the Sphinx” at Casa Contenta (698 645 383) on May 21st. Only 10€ including meal.

Specsavers advice for Allergy Awareness Week Most of us welcome the arrival of spring but the warmer weather often heralds the start of symptoms such as sneezing, headaches and itchy, red or watery eyes for hay fever sufferers. That is why Specsavers has been giving advice on how to handle hay fever, in conjunction with Allergy Awareness Week. Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen and is usually worse in the summer months. As well as sneezing and a blocked or runny nose, hay fever can also cause red, itchy or watery eyes, which can be particularly problematic for contact lens wearers.

Specsavers clinical spokesperson, Dr Nigel Best says: “Hay fever sufferers who wear contact lenses may notice the vision through their lenses can appear smeary and eyes can generally feel uncomfortable. “However, there are some things contact lens wearers can try to help reduce the irritation. Contact lensfriendly eye drops can help to calm down any itchiness and wearing prescription glasses (particularly wraparound sunglasses) can prevent pollen from getting into your eyes. “Those suffering with hay fever could

also try daily disposable lenses during the summer months.” Dr Best also recommends: “While it’s not always possible, staying inside when pollen count is high will help to avoid irritation or showering and changing your clothes when you get home will also help to remove pollen from skin and hair!” Your eyes can reveal a lot about your general health and so it’s important to have regular eye tests – once every two years, or more often if recommended by your optometrist.

Humans can smell with their tongue claim scientists Humans can smell with their tongue as well as their nose, scientists have discovered. Dr Mehmet Ozdener, a cell biologist at the Monell Chemical Sense Centre in Philadelphia, tested human taste cells after his 12-year-old son pointed out that snakes will extend their tongues to smell the air around them. Although snakes use their tongue to direct smell molecules to a special organ in the roof of their mouth, rather than sensing them directly, Dr Ozdener found that humans carry odour receptors in taste cells on the tongue. The findings suggest that the two senses of smell and taste first meet in the mouth rather than the brain as previously thought. And it may explain why flavours which cause the greatest sensations, such as chilli and menthol, cause similar tinglings in the mouth and nose. Previous research has shown that much of the ‘flavour’ of food and drink comes from the smell, and people with a blocked up nose usually report a lack of taste when they eat. The team say the finding may help

them create sprays which made unhealthy food taste bad, to avoid people becoming obese. “Our research may help explain how odour molecules modulate taste perception,” said Dr Ozdener. “The presence of olfactory receptors and taste receptors in the same cell will provide us with exciting opportunities to study interactions between odor and taste stimuli on the tongue. "This may lead to the development of

odour-based taste modifiers that can help combat the excess salt, sugar, and fat intake associated with diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes." The team say the finding may help them create sprays which made unhealthy food taste bad, to avoid people becoming obese. “Our research may help explain how

odour molecules modulate taste perception,” said Dr Ozdener. “The presence of olfactory receptors and taste receptors in the same cell will provide us with exciting opportunities to study interactions between odour and taste stimuli on the tongue. "This may lead to the development of odour-based taste modifiers that can help combat the excess salt, sugar, and fat intake associated with diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes." For the research the team used a method known as calcium imaging to show that human taste cells respond to smell molecules in a manner similar to receptor cells in the nose. When taste cells are triggered by molecules calcium ions produce signals which can be detected. A second experiment demonstrated that a single taste cell can contain both taste and smell receptors at the same time. Commenting on the findings, Charles Spence, Professor of Experimental Psychiatry at Oxford University said: “The results are definitely very intriguing and new.

DID YOU KNOW? of "Network adapters" to expand the category. Double-click your network card and then the "Advanced" tab. Look for anything with “Wake On” or "Sleep Mode" and click on it and change the value to “disable”. If all this seems a bit daunting Ray then, as it’s doing no harm (other than to your sanity) you could maybe just live with it? Or give Phil a call on 687362844 as he can maybe talk you through it.

Robin via email asks: Hi Aunty, I have a Lenovo laptop with Google Chrome as my browser. If I want to use a website regularly, can you please explain how to get its address on the desktop as a shortcut? I thought it was just a matter of right clicking on the address line when the website was open, but I don’t get the option I’m looking for. Aunty Says: Hello Robin. The way I have always done this (which may not be the best way) is to right click on an empty space somewhere on my desktop and choose “New” and “Shortcut”. Here you will be able to copy and paste the https://www bit from the address bar in Chrome and also give the new shortcut icon a name.

Ray via email asks: Helllo Aunty, I have a Dell Inspiron computer which is 18months old and served me well until recently. When I first open up it shows "no internet connection". Then if I close the PC down or use restart it opens as normal. Advice from Dell was to uninstall something called Megawarebytes but doing this made no difference. Your help would be appreciated. Aunty Says: Hi Ray. There is an option in Windows to allow your network device to put the computer into & out of sleep which may be the cause of this. It is a fairly simple but longish procedure so take your time and follow these steps. Right click on the Start icon (bottom left corner) and click on “Device Manager” Click on the "+" to the left

David from Albir asks: Dear Aunty, when I enter the 4th letter of my log in it types gk/md which won't delete on my account, and also if I try to log into my administrator account (which gives me the option of resetting my password but I have not done this in case my PC has a virus). I did get in once with Windows plus R, but now I can't. Please help! Aunty says: Hello David. I’m not 100% sure what could be causing this to be honest. Does the same 4th letter also type that odd character if you were typing and email or maybe writing a letter? The Windows key plus the R key starts the Windows Command Prompt and again I’m not too sure why you would need this procedure to access your computer. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week

Asia has the most Internet users of all continents — accounting for 49 percent of all Internet users (down from about 50 percent in 2017 and up from about 48 percent mid 2018). Europe is a runner up with 16.8 percent of all Internet users. China has the most Internet users of all country. At over 802 million Internet users at the time of writing, China

currently accounts for almost 20 percent of Internet users worldwide. It is trailed by India, with over 500 million Internet users. The number of people using the Internet in China is more than double the population of the U.S. and more than the combined population of the U.S., Japan, Russia, and Mexico. 98 percent of Internet users in China are mobile.

Drugs and Driving – Prescription medications can cause problems Drinking alcohol before driving is still one of the biggest contributors to road traffic incidents, despite the warnings and knowledge of the effects and consequences, however consuming drugs before driving is also continually increasing. In order to be aware of the problems associated with drug use, we have to steer our mind away from what we might consider a typical “drug user” to look or act like, because the reality is there is an increasing number of people whose driving is affected

by drug use, without them realising it might have posed an issue, as prescription and over the counter medication can also have an effect on our driving ability. Medications that can decrease the ability to drive include those that are used to treat sleep disorders, anxiety, psychosis, depression, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, pain, migraines, dementia, allergies, and even a common cold or flu cure can reduce our ability. Before taking any medication you should advise your doctor or the pharmacist that you are a

driver, and ask if the medication will play any part in reducing your driving ability. Medications known to cause problems often feature a symbol on the box, a pictogram of a car in a warning triangle. Whereas the symbol does not necessarily mean you cannot drive using the medication, it is used as an aid in advising of potential risk, but as each of us are different, and the combination of medication may differ, it is still important to read the leaflet and check with the medical professionals before you drive.

Europe approves speed limiters The European Parliament has approved a proposal that will see speed limiters mandatory for vehicles. As of May 2022, vehicles manufactured in the European Union, or sold within the territory, must have a speed limiter installed, a measure that will be extended to the rest of the automotive sector in 2024. For many years road safety specialists have argued that having vehicles which are capable of travelling at speeds for greater than the roads permit are extremely dangerous, and, whereas speed limits are not an unusual concept, leaving the driver responsible for ensuring compliance is still failing. For their part, safety conscious Swedish car manufacturer Volvo had already announced their decision to install speed limiters in new cars as part of their commitment to ensure that nobody is killed on the roads as a result of an incident involving one of their vehicles. In Spain, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) had already proposed the mandatory application of the measure last year, arguing that the reduction in speeds that the devices would

apply would reduce the number of speed-related incidents. In addition to speed limiters, the installation of other systems related to the safety of drivers and other members of the public road, such as cyclists or motorcyclists, has also been approved. These include such devices as intelligent braking mechanisms, a series of advanced distraction warning, lane maintenance and reversing detection systems, and even an interface which will prevent the vehicle from starting if the driver has consumed alcohol, all elements within the power of the driver to deliver on a regular basis, and yet still all part of the increase in the number of incidents that lead to serious and fatal consequences. As with many of the enforced road safety elements, the move is not without criticism, with some saying that it takes away the freedom and liberation of the driver. Well, for the time being, the use of the limiter will not be mandatory, according to the text of the approved ruling, but it will remain up to the driver as to whether or not to activate the system. That seemingly satisfies the need for freedom but does

somewhat limit the effectiveness of the device as nothing more than a token gesture, that is of course until the first cases start to come to light when inappropriate speed had been a factor and the driver had decided not to use the limiter, as the liability is then clearly with the driver and not the manufacturer. The so-called “Road to Zero” is a long one. In fact, despite these new measures, the European Union has already ruled out achieving the proposed objectives in the reduction of mortality to 15,750 accidents, in 2020, due to the death last year of more than 25,000 people in traffic accidents. However, it does not rule out the final goal of zero road deaths in 2050. The new laws also see safety improvements for larger vehicles, in particular when it comes to ensuring safer passage of more vulnerable road users. From 2025, trucks and vans will have to have direc

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, before we really get into the nitty-gritty of the weekend action which sees the Premier League titlerace go into the final weekend, let us just take a moment to laugh at the fact that Jose Mourinho is ‘believed’ to be considering an offer to take over as manager of Celtic. Yes, Celtic. Now, of course Jose isn’t actually going to manage Celtic. There is more chance of him being invited back to Manchester United as club ambassador. What seems to be happening is that his agent, the lovely Jorge Mendes, has noticed that PSG have hardly finished the season on a high; losing to United, falling over the Ligue 1 finishing line half-drunk and losing to Rennes in some cup final in France has meant people (namely Mendes and his gang) have started questioning whether Thomas Tuchel wouldn’t be better off standing down and letting Mou bring

his own version of anti-football to Paris. You can imagine Kylian Mbappe and Neymar getting on board with that, can’t you? But it is the offer from Celtic that is currently on the table. Dropping Jose into one of the most emotionally charged rivalries in world football sounds sensible, right? Back to proper football. Liverpool have taken the title-chase to the final weekend meaning ‘destiny’ will decide the destination of the Premier League, according to King Kloppo. Personally, I’m backing a late winner from Sergio Aguero to be the more likely deciding factor unless Jurgen is planning to give a debut to their U16 central midfielder, Delroy Destiny. (He doesn’t actually exist before all you Liverpool fans start getting on my back, again). If Rafa Benitez was supposed to be asking his Newcastle side to step aside because, you know, he still has a house in Liverpool and everything nobody bothered telling Salomon Rondon. Rondon got a brace and up until the 86th minute it looked City might be able to wrap it all up against Leicester on Monday night. But Kloppo threw on Divock Origi and the Belgian scored a late winner again. Liverpool refuse to give in and City are going to have to earn every single ounce of the Premier League crown if they are to win it again. More worryingly for the Scousers was Mohamed Salah’s head nestling itself into the Newcastle ‘keeper’s hip meaning he is now a doubt for Tuesday night’s Champions League dead rubber against Barcelona. And some people were still calling it a dive! Tottenham Hotspur like to be innovative but even I struggled to buy into their novel way of resting players for

the trip to Amsterdam this coming week. Spurs felt it wise to get two players sent off against Bournemouth so that Heungmin Son and Juan Foyth could be fresh as daisies against Ajax. However, they didn’t think about the knock-on effect of having nine players left running around trying to do the work of 11. It was all clearly too much for Eric Dier who seemed convinced that he was meant to be one of the two pre-agreed to get a red card and was doing his damnest to make it happen. Credit to the young Cherries shotstopper Mark Travers who became the youngest Premier League goalkeeper since Joe Hart. If the young Irishman can follow in Hart’s footsteps he too could be warming the bench at Burnley in a decade’s time. Spurs have now lost seven of their last 11 Premier League matches. Luckily for them, they’ve turned out to be one of the two least rubbish contenders for a Champions League spot. A goalkeeper registering an assist, a striker who has never scored for his club who have been relegated for a month and a broken corner flag pretty much sums up United’s end-of-season form. Simply put, if Scott McTominay is your most progressive attacking threat something has gone wrong. On the plus side, David de Gea wasn’t at fault for Huddersfield’s equaliser. Everyone else was. It feels like the players got Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the job and then forgot they still had to play football. The sad thing is the players who showed they could turn it on for long enough to get Ole in charge won’t get the chance to play for him for much longer. Jose looked up from the Celtic contract he is studying long enough to smirk. And don’t forget, this new United

regime gave Phil Jones a new contract. Phil Jones was once described as the modern-day Duncan Edwards. As someone suggested on Twitter, he’s not even as good as Eddie The Eagle Edwards. Mind you, when Ashley Young switched to centre-back for the final ten minutes at least Jonesy wasn’t the most comical defensive selection of the day. It’s not all bad though, United fans. That point pretty much made sure 6th is yours. Let’s just hope Ole gets the ‘realistic time’ he needs to sort this mess out, eh? Incredibly, that Chelsea team who have been rubbish all year (if you forget the fact they went unbeaten for the first couple of months) sit in third place today. They needed Ruben Loftus-Cheek to arrive late from the bench to inspire them but they did enough to see of FA Cup finalists Watford 3-0. Sarriball will be passing sideways in the Champions League next season and they head off to their Europa League semi-final second leg against Frankfurt in fine fettle. A win for Arsenal at home to Brighton would have put them in a confident position with regard to a top-four finish. But that would have been too simple for the Gunners. Brighton approached the game with the care-free mentality that befitted a side safe from relegation and, despite being 1-0 down to a Yo-Pierre penalty, left the Emirates with a point. Glenn Murray, still hanging around the opposition area, netted their very own spot-kick after Granit Xhaka did what Granit Xhaka tends to do. Unless there is an eight-goal swing on the final kickabout of the season, Arsenal will not finish in the top four. I don’t think even Spurs can contrive to mess that one up. It was a brave move by Uncle Roy not to pick Patrick van Aarnholt against Cardiff City considering a Palace victory would send Cardiff down. PVA has scored

the deciding goal that has seen a team relegated for the last three seasons, or so they tell me. It’s safe to say that Neil Warnock was already planning for life after football, doing a live audition as a frontman of a retro 90s covers band as the cameras followed him to the dugout prematch. Unfortunately for Neil, the Cardiff fans, as well as the club itself, seem keen for him to stick around for at least another season after relegation was confirmed. Martin Kelly did his best to take the relegation fight to the final day but Palace’s front three of Zaha, Michy B and Andros scored the goals to send Warnock’s team down. It was the best relegation he has suffered, apparently. West Ham United beat Southampton 3-0 at the Athletics Stadium where Marko Arnautovic finally showed up and Ryan Fredericks got the ‘perfect 10’ rating from a popular data company. Now, call me a cynic (I know, I know) but Arnie scoring a brace against a Southampton side so mentally spent managing to stay in the top flight following a big dose of Mark Hughes does not mean he is ‘back’ as an elite striker. By the very same token, West Ham’s right back did manage 100% in a few key metrics but if his opponent is literally on the beach thinking about next season it is little wonder that Ryan didn’t get dribbled past at any point, no? Get the perfect ten in a game that means something Ryan, then I’m listening. Fulham gave a debut to the now youngest footballer to play Premier League football. Harvey Elliott was 16 years and 30 days old when he stepped on to the field. He was born in 2003. 2003! And on that note, I’m off for a Horlicks.

Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

After a bit of a sporting drought, we are back in full swing this week. We have some cricket, some tennis, some Formula One and the return of a former favourite of this column, Sir Mo Farah! If I was an England international cricketer heading into the biggest summer in English cricketing history knowing there was a chance I might play a significant part do you know what I wouldn’t do? Get caught taking recreational drugs (for a second time). Alex Hales is without doubt one of the finest ODI batsmen in the world. On his day, he is a match winner with the class and ability to take matches away from the opposition at will with his range of hitting. His 170 odd a few years ago was the dawn of a new ODI era for England but he has found himself on the fringe of the side again in the last year. Is that just down to the fact that others got into the side and are refusing to be removed? Or is it down to the fact that Hales keeps finding himself in a bit of bother? After all, he was in and around the whole Ben Stokes palava last year and now this. The big question is how England should react. Should they can him from the World Cup squad and make an example of him? Or do they put their arm around him, accept that he is clearly a complex guy that might need some special treatment if they are to keep him in the right frame of mind to step in to the side at any point in a high pressure tournament? I don’t know what side of the fence

Ashley Giles sat on the whole Kevin Pieterson thing, but England’s new Director of Whatever it is has a big decision to make. And would you look at that? Sir Mo of Farah is back in the news and it almost smells of something brought to our attention to get people to watch the London Marathon. Or so I thought, initially in a standard moment of sheer cynicism. There’s been a bit of public beef in the last week between Farah and a true athletics great Haile Gebrselassie. Farah has been staying in a hotel owned by Gebrselassie whilst training and decided to announce to the world last week that he was robbed whilst he was there - and Gebrselassie had done little to investigate. Farah announced all this in a press conference and then shared a text message he had sent to Gebrselassie which I will share with you now; “I want to inform you that I’m disappointed you have not made any effort to find my stolen money, and especially my watch. I have tried to contact you by telephone several times. Know that I am not responsible for what I say during the press conference in London and what influence it will have on your personality and your business. Greetings, Sir Mo.” Now, what I love about this is the way Farah immediately excuses himself from anything he might say to the world media and the fact that he signs the text message “Sir Mo”. I have always wondered whether knights of the realm referred to themselves as “sir” and settled on the fact that nice, humble ones would not and arrogant, egotisical idiots probably would. It is always nice to be proven right. Gebrselassie struck back, claiming

that Farah had not paid his $3000 bill, had been investigated by police for assaulting a fellow guest and that his hotel had offered to reimburse him for any amount claimed to have been stolen. For me, it feels a little bit like Farah might have been striking the first blow to deflect us from other news that might be about to come out. Oh look, there’s the cynical side of me again. Oh, Farah didn’t win the marathon. Just in case you cared. Sir Andy Murray (and you just know he doesn’t sign text messages as Sir Andy) is ‘pain free’ and ready to play tennis again. Murray announced this whilst firing the starting pistol in the London Marathon and managed to get through that ordeal without

qualify for the Crucible, none the less. Now, before you imagine Fat Gaz from the Dog and Duck just rocking up in Sheffield and beating the World Number One over the best of nineteen, let’s add the true context. Yes, what James Cahill achieved was amazing. But, he isn’t a proper amateur as such. OK, he isn’t currently a snooker player with a pro card but he has been a professional player before and he has beaten two current World Number Ones in the past. So, you know, he can play a bit. But, it was pretty impressive all the same (until he crashed out in the next round in the deciding frame). Three time champions Mark Selby has also crashed out alongside current champion Mark Williams

Valtteri Bottas

breaking down injured, so you never know. He might actually play at Wimbledon. It’s also the World Snooker Championships at the moment and it has been a week of shocks. Firstly, favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan was knocked out by a rank amateur. No, an actual amateur - the first to

meaning the draw is wide open. Masters winner Judd Trump is now the people’s favourite but he might even be out by the time you read this. Valtteri Bottas drove his car faster than Lewis Hamilton drove his so ended up winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. I love F1, I do.
