11Blue Flags for Orihuela Costa The Municipal Department for Beaches, headed by Orihuela Councillor Luisa Boné, announced that Orihuela Costa will receive 11 Blue Flags, that is all

its beaches in 2019 for the second year in a row. The Blue Flags are considered to be the high tourist standard for meeting criteria such as water quality standards, cleanliness of the beaches, adequate public information system and a good lifeguard rescue service. Likewise, this year the efforts of the Municipal Department of Beaches were especially recognised in improving accessibility for people with disabilities. Luisa Boné rated these awards very positively as great efforts had to be made in 2018 to maintain this highest level of quality. The Councillor for Beaches recalled that "it was a complicated year because we had to renew the contract for the seasonal beach bar services because the former city government was involved in scandals in regard to this contract. We had to take care of some services, the provision of which was normally the responsibility of the winner of the tender, but since the contract was not renewed, we had to take care of it." At that time, seasonal services were initially delayed, leading to criticism that Boné considers "unjustified and which we now consider excessive, since the contract with the beach bars, which is in place, will bring much more benefits to locals and holiday makers alike. The new contract provides

Luisa Bone

clear advantages for the supplier, as well as for the municipal cash register, which is confirmed by the independent agency Adeac. The management of the beaches was successfully carried out by the Municipal Department of Beaches despite all the circumstances and this is reflected with the retention of the quality mark Blue Flags." The renewal of the eleven blue flags on all eleven beaches, as well as that of the marina in Dehesa de Campoamor, means for the second time in the history of the municipality of Orihuela, to have got all possible flags, Luisa Boné emphasised. She continued "this shows the seriousness and willingness to fulfil our obligations since we took over the Municipal Department of Beaches in 2017." The City Councillor concluded: "It is necessary to thank the work of the whole team, which has enabled Orihuela to be a point of reference both at

national and international level. Orihuela ranks second in the ranking of cities with the most Blue Flags in Spain, and our city is an international reference point for outstanding quality and performance standards, both in terms of environmental conditions and services provided. Luisa Boné thanked in particular the staff of the Municipal Department of Beaches, Infrastructure, Tourism, the Environment and Municipal Garbage Collection, whose great efforts were made to promote the beaches of Orihuela internationally."

Financial plans update Each Friday the town council meets to put forward, agree and debate their proposals. It has been a difficult process over the last four years due to the lack of a clear majority for any one party. As a result, each decision made has been a case of one step forward and often one step back again. At the plenary meeting of 10th May Torrevieja’s Local Government moved towards finalising its Sustainable Urban Mobility in the town. The amount that has been allocated in €103,510 and the plan aims to improve transport within the town whilst also taking into consideration the relative impact that each form has on the environment. This plenary saw some minor contracts agreed and a move forward for contracting services for the

Feria de Sevillanas. The date for this popular event had already been put back due to contracting difficulties. Payment was also agreed for a number of invoices including the cleaning of beaches, the street cleaning service and the removal of waste. The lack of a strong consensus on the town council has meant that many valuable projects could not be carried out during this mandate. The people of Torrevieja will hope that whatever the outcome of the next local election, a sufficient number of candidates are able to work together proactively to take the town forward rather than blocking moves towards progress. Neberekutins Alexander Exhibition From 4th to 17th May there will be an exhibition of paintings in the Casino in Torrevieja of the painter Alexander Neberekutins who was born in Russia in 1962. Alexander was trained by wellknown Russian art teachers and is currently one of the leading water colour artists in Latvia. Since 2015 he has been the President of the International Association of Painters of Latvia (IWS Latvia) and he actively participates in the organisation of several international exhibitions. Since 2016 he has been the leader of his country in Fabriano in water colour. His works are recognised for their lightness, self-control and realism. His personal style is quite distinctive and easily recognisable. Entry to the exhibition is free.

There are 265 women living in Torrevieja who are currently known victims of domestic violence. These are the ones that officials are aware of and are registered in ‘Sistema VioGén’. One of these women is considered to be at high risk, 35 are at medium risk and 151 are low risk according to this police system that was first launched in 2007. These figures are based only on those cases that have been reported. It isn’t just

these measures was discussed at a meeting of the town’s security board. ‘There are many more cases,’ acknowledged personnel on the board, ‘but we can only act on those which are reported to us.’ There are some successes however. The board noted how last February they were able to intervene during an attack on an elderly woman, so avoiding what could have resulted in a death.

Torrevieja hospital understaffed Unions are claiming that Torrevieja hospital’s urology department is currently understaffed. The department is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical conditions of the urinary tract in both sexes. With an aging population in the town, it is a department that is much in demand. However now it is claimed that the department is running seriously low on specialists and only has a single urologist dedicated to it when it is recommended that there should be six

Coalition candidates presented in Orihuela Costa Eight of the candidates of the coalition formed by the three parties Cambiemos Orihuela, C.L.A.R.O. and Unidas Podemos, appeared before a large and enthusiastic audience at Restaurant Nacional in Orihuela Costa on 9th May. All candidates affirmed their commitment to a change of government in Orihuela and a new, more

integrated but de-centralised Orihuela after the municipal elections on 26th May. The head of the coalition list, Carlos Bernabeu, remarked that the presentation occurred appropriately on Europe Day and in Orihuela Costa where a truly European population of Spanish and citizens from many European countries live side-by-side.

New animal shelter proposed The councillor for the protection of animals, Carmen Morate, together with the architect, Carlos Pascual, presented on 6th May the outline of the project to construct a new animal shelter in the town. ‘This shelter will be exactly what’s needed,’ explained the councillor. ‘Until now all that we have been able to do is patch things up.’ By the councillor’s own admissions, the project is ‘ambitious’ but it is also very necessary for the comfort of the animals and those who work and volunteer with them. The new premises will be built on 3,149 square metres of land and will have the capacity for more than a hundred animals. The design has been put together in consultation with those who work there and the volunteers. Councillor Morate has asked those involved in delivering the services what is needed and what ideas they have for improving conditions. She has also visited other animal shelters around the region in order to get more ideas about effective practices and accommodation. Carlos Pascual has been placed in charge of drawing up the details of the project. The design and draft plans will cost €14,800 which will come from the total budget of €350,000. It is planned that the project will be completed before the summer and following this the building work will need to go out to tender. The new shelter will have an entrance in Avenida Rosa Mazón and this will lead directly into the main building. There will be a reception, offices, a room for veterinary attention, a room for surgical operations, wash room and locker room for staff.

There will be different rooms for the animals with a space where they can be placed in quarantine when they first arrive. There will also be an area where the animals can be observed. There will be some medium-sized huts where the animals can be together in order to assist with socialisation. The individual accommodation will have a covered part for the bedding and food and an open part for fresh air.

The new shelter will also include an area for cats. This will be divided into three with one part for those healthy cats that are ready to be adopted, one for cats with chronic diseases and a quarantine area for cats receiving treatment. An area will also be set aside for larger animals such as horses and donkeys and another for birds. There will be gardens where the animals can be walked too. Suzanne O’Connel

BITE SIZE Local election campaigning in full swing NEWS: Continued from page 3 specialists working there. The union CSIF has made the allegation claiming that as specialists have left, they have not been replaced. A spokesperson for the union explained; ‘It is totally insufficient when this department is responsible for 159,000 people with health cards as well as catering for tourists and part-time residents, to have only one urologist on call.’ Although the hospital is privately managed by Ribera Salud, it is still accountable as a public service and as such the union has denounced the situation.

Students brighten up the town Around 46 students from the school of architecture at the University of Alicante have been busy leaving their mark in different buildings around the town. Fifteen shops around the city are to be decorated with their designs which have been inspired by the salt lakes. The creations are the culmination of four months of work on the project which began with the students identifying opportunities and proposing their projects. Now the students have been organised into 15 groups and will transfer their ideas to the fifteen shops that have volunteered to take part. The projects will compete for three prizes awarded by the Department of Commerce and that will be decided by a jury. Those wishing to take a look at the students’ideas can do so at the casino in Torrevieja where the official opening ceremony took place on May 9th.

Amanecer school heats up The parents of students who attend the Amanecer Primary School in Torrevieja have asked the councillor for education, José Hurtado for action to improve the working conditions at their school. Currently the students are using prefabricated buildings and have been doing so since 2004. Their current major concern is the heat of the corridors connecting classrooms. The corridor is covered in plastic and Continued on page 8

With two weeks to go to the local elections, the town of Torrevieja is now gearing up in preparation. The different political parties have been out preparing their billboards and placing their allocated quota of posters on the boards in the centre of Torrevieja. Each party is allowed a set amount of space depending on how many councillors were elected at the last elections. The campaign process is tightly controlled but there will still be debates about who has pushed the boundaries in the run up to the election. A new feature of this election campaign are the ‘chats’ that are being advertised with different representative councillors. The use of technology means that there are more opportunities for people to directly pose their questions – if you have the language, of course. Although during the next two weeks there will be some frenetic activity whilst

Following the national picture, it is likely that the far right party Vox will also attract some votes this time round.

each party makes its case, the last day before the local elections should remain quiet. Further campaigning on this day is prohibited. Each party formally presents their list of candidates and provides agreed opportunities to meet with the electorate. The recent general elections have once more shown how Spain is increasingly becoming a multi-party parliament rather than the two-party carve up of the PP and PSOE. The two big representatives of the right and left respectively no longer have a monopoly and were joined at the last local elections by Los Verdes, Sueños and Ciudadanos.

Whichever one you choose, you select their voting slip from the piles provided on a table in the polling station, place it in an envelope and post it in the ballot box. Some parties circulate their voting slips prior to the day of the election and you can take these with you if you prefer. If you do not receive a slip from the party you wish to vote for then you can pick one up in the polling station itself. Voting at the municipal elections is one of the few opportunities there are for foreign residents living permanently in Spain to have their say.

How to vote If you are on the electoral roll and eligible to vote then you should be receiving your tarjeta censal now. Check your postbox as these are only small, unassuming folded papers which could easily be taken for junk mail. This is your ticket to vote and should be taken along with your ID, a passport in the case of a foreign resident, to your polling station which will be named on your voting paper. The elections are taking place on Sunday 26th May and you can turn up at any time between 9am and 8pm to caste your vote. Each party has their ‘voting slip’ which includes the names of the 25 possible councillors that they are putting forward. You do not vote for individual councillors but for the party itself.

The organisation Asociación Salvemos Lo Ferris reported the destruction of important palm tree during the Easter storms in Torrevieja. During the weekend of the 23rd and 24th April a 13 metre high palm tree, estimated to be around 130 years old, was one of the casualties of the high winds and storm-like conditions. The association are also placing blame on the owners of the land and the ‘Costa’ government who are responsible for those areas and whom the organisation accuse of neglect and lack of care. There also seems to be some confusion about whose responsibility the fallen palm tree actually is. The owners saying it is out of their jurisdiction and Costas the same. The wall built around the area by the owners has also come in for criticism. They have blamed it for increasing the damage caused by the weather. During the deluge it is estimated that around 200 litres per square metre of water fell and that the natural system of drainage was interrupted due to the presence of the wall. This unnatural barrier acted as a dam, according

to the pressure group, who continue to champion this area of natural beauty. It acted as a collection point for the water that was on its way down to the sea and caused a build up around the fence. The gate collapsed and subsequently more water accumulated around this narrow opening. The pressure of the water took part of the dunes and plant life with it. The palm trees in the area are of important local interest. A record detailing those of particular importance was published in March and included 90 trees and 15 bushes considered to be especially significant. Some of the palm trees are more than 100 years old and over 12 metres high. These include examples in Lo Ferrís. Now the catalogue will need modification. The association are keen to point out the value and importance of these trees which are symbolic and of cultural value. In 2018 the regional government placed the beach and the palm grove in the Coastal Plan as protected land. However, the dispute surrounding the wall continues. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Talks about addiction Improvements to NEWS: and adolescence Torrevieja’s tourist Continued from page 5 there is no air conditioning in this area. Although the classrooms can be cooled, the corridors cannot. The parent association claims that this failure is subjecting their children to intolerable heat as they move around the building. Now parents want to see some actions to address the problem.

Woman found dead on beach On 9th May early risers enjoying Los Náufragos beach made a tragic discovery. A woman’s body was found on the beach at around 9.30 in the morning. The middle-aged woman was lying face down next to the Poniente pier and was partly covered by seaweed. The local police and Guardia Civil were called and her body was removed from the scene. Although the lower part of her body was clothed the top part was naked. No more details have been released about the cause of death although it is believed that she could have died earlier that morning. On first inspection, no documentation was found although some personal effects were discovered on the beach close by. The investigation into the reason for her death continues.

Saving wildlife Councillors Fanny Serrano and Carmen Morate have revealed that a total of 43 different wild animals have been rescued during 2018. This includes two loggerhead turtles, a snake, three dormice, a hedgehog and 32 birds. The birds have included five Audoiun gulls, two common swifts, two kestrels, two eagles, a curlew and a blackbird. ‘Each of these animals that has been rescued has a story behind it,’ explained councillor Serrano. If you do find an animal that is in trouble then you can call the local police on 092 or the town animal centre on 670027853 or the recovery centre for wildlife in Alicante on 965938085. Councillor Carmen Morate pointed out that on the beaches in the summer the lifeguard service is also equipped with cardboard boxes for the collection of animals that are in need of help on the coast.

Torrevieja’s symphonic orchestra The orchestra will next be performing at the International Auditorium in Torrevieja on Saturday June 8th at 9pm. Tickets are available for €8 from the ticket office in the auditorium itself from two hours before the performance. You can also buy them on Wednesdays from the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre between 11am and 2pm. More details can be found on www.orquestasinfonicadetorrevieja.com Suzanne O’Connell

A series of talks have been arranged for young people on the subject of addiction. The talks are organised by the University of Alicante and will take place in Torrevieja. On 24th May they will be given in different secondary schools across the town and will focus on new technology and its link with gambling as well as on addictive substances including alcohol and cannabis. The talks have come at the request of the headteachers of the schools who have passed on their concerns to the councillor for education and they will be aimed at both young people and their families. ‘New technology is something to take into account now when we are talking about addiction,’ explained the councillor for education, José Hurtado. ‘They have joined the traditional subjects of tobacco and alcohol. We now also have video games, social media and online gambling that can become problems.’ The councillor added that it is very important to involve the families and that

there would also be campaigns against truancy in secondary schools too. The talks will first be targeted at young people themselves and will then lead into a series of presentations for parents. These will take place in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. On Thursday 16th May at 6pm the researcher, Patricia Juan, will present her discussion about the prevention of addiction to social media.’ On Saturday 18th May at 11am it will be José José, the creator of the web site adiccionesadolescentes.com, who will give a talk about addiction to technology in adolescence. On 31st May at 6pm, Patricia Juan will again speak to people but this time about the dangers of cyberbullying in adolescents. The final talk will be on June 1st at 11am. This time José José will talk about adolescents who consume addictive substances. Suzanne O’Connell

map Councillor Fanny Serrano has presented a new map that can be used by tourists visiting Torrevieja to help them find their way around. It may also be of use to residents and people who are more familiar with the town. The maps have been put together following the councillor’s attendance at a range of national and international tourist fairs. During these times she has had opportunity to collect views, questions and to assess the general level of interest there is in Torrevieja. Street plans are much in demand. The new map is an enlarged one which includes the latest information updated from the census and statistics department which hopefully reflects the correct layout of the streets in the town. In spite of its increased size it can

still be folded into a comfortable collapsible format for carrying. The map includes streets, main tourist areas, a directory of public services and centres, official town hall offices and useful telephone numbers. A total of 10,000 copies have been printed. A map has also been produced for La Mata which is an A3 size and also shows the main tourist attractions and features. A total of 25,000 of these have been printed. The plans have been in circulation for a week and can be obtained for free from the Tourist Office and at places of interest such as hotels and restaurants. Suzanne O’Connell

No blue flag for La Mata La Mata Sur beach is not to receive the blue flag recommendation that it has had in previous years. La Asociación de EducaciónAmbiental y del Consumidor (ADEAC) hands out the distinctive accolade that recognises the facilities and cleanliness of beaches in Spain. Since 2014, la Mata Sur has boasted of being one of Torrevieja’s beaches to earn the badge. Unfortunately, in 2019 it is not to be. The loss of the flag has come as something of a surprise to the town hall. Having challenged its withdrawal, they have been told that it was the state of the paseo maritimo that has led to the flag’s removal. However, this area was in fact repaired following damage caused by the storms of 2016 and 2017 with money provided by the national government. The council are ready to challenge the association on their decision. Councillor Fanny Serrano has expressed her surprise as the area has also been one of particular environmental focus over the past year. The dunes have been the centre of a number of activities to preserve and replace the natural fauna of the area. ‘It seems incredible,’ explained councillor Serrano.

‘’This beach borders the area of the Water Mill where we have been carrying out revegetation activities in the dunes. We are very surprised that this area has lost its status.’ A possible explanation is that the inspectors might have taken into account the state of the walkway to the north of this beach. Near the centre of La Mata there are problems with the wooden promenade. However, this stretch of beach has never received a blue flag. The good news is that several of the town’s other beaches continue to hold blue flag status. CaboCervera, Los Locos, El Cura, Los Náufragos and CalaPiteras will all continue to fly the blue flag in 2019. The down grading of La Mata Sur should also be kept in context – none of the town’s beaches were awarded a blue flag between 2007 and 2009. The ADEAC is a non-profit organisation which finances its inspections through various subsidies it receives from the autonomous communities in which the travel expenses of its inspectors are paid. It is a respected organisation, but confusion still holds over why La Mata Sur has slipped from favour. Suzanne O’Connell

HORSE RESCUE CENTRE STILL ON HIGH ALERT For most of us the recent gota fria is a distant memory and we’ve turned our thoughts to the start of summer. However, this hasn’t been the case for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC), where the effects of the weather are still wreaking havoc. The sheer amount of rain once again highlighted the desperate need for a pump, but with ongoing basic expenses which amount to €5,000 it’s impossible. In fact, what they really need is two pumps as they have three areas at the Centre which are particularly susceptible to flooding and co-founder Rod Weeding has to trudge through the torrential rain and unforgiving mud night and day to rotate the pump from one place to another. They did have another pump but sadly it was stolen last year before they installed the security system. The cost of a new pump is approximately €550 or a donation of one or two of the quality and function they need would be, of course, absolutely fantastic. They are always eternally grateful to all their supporters, donors and volunteers for everything they do for the horses. There is such a need and demand for this type of sanctuary, which receives no official funding, but of course comes at a cost to the charity for care and upkeep of the horses. EHCRC is working fervently with local and state authorities to try and obtain regular and ongoing funding because the reality is that there is nowhere else for these neglected, abused and abandoned horses, ponies

and donkeys to go. They would love to have better facilities but at least here each and every animal gets the best food, health care and of course love, kindness and understanding of their special needs. Despite the lack of funding, EHCRC continues to work with the most severe cases with the local and national Police, the Guardia Civil, Seprona and the Councils. When they are called out to assist and collect an animal they are given official documentation with a case number. This legal notification enables them to transport the equine to the

Pump desperately needed

Centre and there they must remain until the case is closed. To date there has only been three closed cases. This type of rescue is in the early stages of development in Spain and there is a clear need for new legislation to help the authorities ensure these animals get the care they deserve and that there is robust funding for the Centre. If you would like to contribute towards the new pumps or towards the Centre’s ongoing costs or you would like to donate good quality furniture to their Charity Shops or volunteer then visit: easyhorsecare.net for details.

Spain is tops for solo travel Spain has been voted the world's number one destination for lone travellers, according to the US News & World Report – in fact, it earns a 10 out of 10 for its 'friendliness'. Ahead of Italy, in second place and New Zealand in third, Spain tops an annual list which has the United Arab Emirates at 64 – and reasons to travel there are abundant, the survey shows. Although Spanish beaches are the country's bestknown tourism magnet, these are not even mentioned on the list, which shows just how much else Spain has to offer holidaymakers in order to earn the top spot. For example, its cultural attractions win a 9.8 out of 10 and its rich history 9.6 out of 10, whilst the cuisine – arguably among the select few countries on earth where traditional dishes are better at home than abroad – gets a 9.7 out of 10; 'bland' or 'unimaginative' are two adjectives which could never be used to describe food anywhere in Spain, even taking into

make up a great trip – are Greece, Australia, Portugal, Brazil, the Republic of Ireland, Thailand, and The Netherlands. Canada comes 12th, France 17th, and the UK 24th. The USA is 28th, Turkey 32nd and Germany 37th, just ahead of Malaysia at 38. According to the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies (CEAV), a total of eight million people living in Spain go on holiday alone, either regularly, or have done so at least once in recent years.

account the vastly-diverse varieties from region to region. Anecdotal evidence shows Spain is also a very safe country for lone female travellers; it is common for women to walk home across towns late at night on their own without qualms, and also for homosexual travellers, either alone or in couples, since Spain is among the most accepting of and open to diversity and was only the fourth country on earth to legalise same-sex marriage and adoption, in 2005, having just been pipped at the post by Canada and a few years behind The Netherlands and Belgium. From fourth to 10th, in order, the best countries for lone holidaymakers – in terms of safety, attractions, friendliness, food, history and all other ingredients that

traveller gets to see most of the highlights of a country within one to two-and-a-half weeks under a guide in each area. Where this happens, groups with a language in common will normally spend most of the day together on guided visits, meaning travelling alone does not have to be 'lonely': tourists could be with each other almost daily for a fortnight, meaning they become friends and often stay in touch after their trip. Destinations offered by Spanish travel agencies are very diverse, with practically the whole planet – other than countries which are known to be unsafe – available on 'circuit tour' or single-destination 'freetime' package holidays, for prices that do not vary hugely.

Lone travel And these days, holidaying solo is no longer the prerogative of the single or friendless: of those eight million, nearly 20 percent of the population, a total of 30 percent of lone travellers are in a relationship. In most cases, however, Spanish travel agencies offer holidays that do not just stick to one destination in a given country: 'circuit tours' are the norm, where a

GBP / EUR UPDATE The possibility of an end to Brexit uncertainty and a possible deal on the horizon meant that last week, Bank of England governor Mark Carney stated that he believed inflation would require interest rate hikes by the bank "more frequent than financial markets currently expect". Sterling strengthened by an average of 0.5% at the end of last week and with few data available, optimism over Brexit appeared to be the cause. After the bank holiday, the service sector PMI was just short of forecast at 50.4 but higher on the month and back in the growth zone. However, this couldn’t help the pound when the cracks had begun to show in the cross-party Brexit agreement after Labour MPs stated that their support of the government's withdrawal bill was conditional on the inclusion of customs union membership and a confirmatory public vote on the final deal. Even good news on house prices couldn’t help the pound towards the end of the week; a rise of 1.1% was reported by Halifax, meaning a 5.0% annual increase, despite not offsetting the previous month’s 1.3% decline. However, with Brexit back on shaky ground, the pound struggled to make any upward

moves towards the end of the week as investors feared returning back to square one with the negotiations and the whole Brexit process. The euro made slight gains over the course of the week. The European Commission's Economic Forecast for spring 2019 highlighted "weakness in manufacturing" as an area for concern. There were some positive highlights – robust manufacturing growing in Ireland was noted in the report and this week it was announced German factory orders were up 0.6% in March, and exports rose 1.5% in March compared with the same month in 2018. The good news was balanced by the measured approach of the report, which noted that while some countries, such as Bulgaria, may see steady growth, Sweden’s performance is expected to be lower in terms of both manufacturing orders and industrial production. The euro did make small gains against a struggling pound, but remained largely unchanged against the US dollar and investors will be looking for more than a glimmer of good news in the coming weeks.

Do you know how your pension is invested? How to understand your retirement savings and pull them together to work harder • Consolidating your old pensions into one easyto manage pension can cut costs • A Sipp is a good option for those looking to broaden their investment choices

D

o you have an old workplace pension but haven't a clue about how your money is invested or have old pensions that you've lost track of? If so, you're not alone. The responsibility to save for retirement is increasingly falling to individuals, but many people struggle to connect with how their workplace pension is performing, or what happened to old pots. Most people worked for a number of different employers over the course of their careers and, as a result, end up with several different pension pots. However, left in an old employer's pension scheme, your money is at risk from high charges and poor performance. An obvious remedy to this is to consolidate your old pensions into one easy‐to‐manage pension. Many people therefore choose to open a self‐invested personal pension ‐ a Sipp ‐ that offers them a much wider choice of funds and other investment options. Put simply, Sipps are a type of do‐ it‐yourself private pension that allow savers to cherry pick from thousands of investments to create a portfolio tailored to their individual appetite for risk and investment objectives. This can include funds, investment trusts and shares. Bear in mind that you'll be responsible for making your own investment decisions and managing your portfolio which is by no means an easy feat. If you’re not comfortable tackling big decisions on your own, then this is where Seagate can help you. Homes in bloom 2. Blooming lovely If you break any stems while preparing a bunch for a vase, don’t discard them. Instead, put them to good use as a tabletop display. Simply trim off any excess stem or remaining leaves and float the flowerhead in a shallow bowl of water. They’ll only last a day or so, but in that time, they’ll make a striking centrepiece.

Celebrate spring and beyond by filling your home with colourful flowers and delicate scents. Whether it's a gorgeous bouquet or single stems, get some decorating inspiration with these ideas. 1. Think pink Introduce a fresh feel with flowers in pretty pastel hues. And to make a mixed bunch work harder, split it between two or three complementary containers – just ensure the flowers work together by balancing their shapes, sizes, hues and heights. However, remember that Spring flowers continue to grow in water, so think a little more carefully when using them in a mixed arrangement, as they’ll need room to stretch and spread.

3. Tulip fever Thanks to their punchy colours and architectural shape, tulips look spectacular displayed en masse. Because they’re affordable, you can justify splashing out on two to three bunches – or more – and generously filling an interesting container, such as this decorative enamel bucket. When selecting tulips, mixed colours are fun, but a single shade creates a more sophisticated look. 4. Decorative art Why not decorate your mantelpiece? Line up a selection of vessels and fill with an array of seasonal flowers such as the nigella, lisianthus, mimosa, Clematis ‘River Dance’, anemone and ranunculus. Add in some faux greenery like the daffodil garland shown to

fill in the gaps between vessels. 5. Wild bunch A hand-tied bouquet really showcases spring flowers in tones of the same colour. Add structure to the arrangement with greenery – eucalyptus looks nice – and tougherstemmed flowers such as these Sweet Avalanche roses. Again, don’t fasten too tightly, as your flowers will need some space to fully open out. 6. Making arrangements One of the easiest tricks in an interior stylist’s book is to display single stems in a line-up of vases. This is particularly simple if you use one type of flower, but give it more interest by mixing varieties such as with the Clematis ‘River Dance’, scabious, asclepias or nigella. Astrantia gives a garden look to flower arrangements. Anemones and nigella are very short-lived, so enjoy their beauty while they last.

Asteroid 'will threaten earth in 2082' Canarian Astrophysics Institute researchers believe that a massive asteroid will pass between the moon and the earth in the year 2082 – near enough to the planet to cause a 'significant risk' to life.

The Solar System group has been using the huge telescope based in the Canary Islands to track the movement of asteroid number 2019 DS1, and expect io to pass within 165,000 kilometres of the earth on February 26 in 63 years' time. This means any child born this year will be just short of current pension age when it happens, or anybody aged 37 now will be 100 then – an age which is likely to be quite a normal life expectancy by that time. Even though anyone aged 40 or over today is unlikely to see it, the risk to the planet will be very real for many of today's children and very young adults. As yet, the Canary Island researchers have not been able to determine where the asteroid will fall, but say that wherever it does, it could cause a catastrophe similar to that of 1908 when

space matter landed in Tunguska in the central Siberian plains of Russia. Back then, at 7.17am local time on 30th June, the 37-metre (120-foot) diameter object created an explosion similar to that of a nuclear bomb and was even detected by earthquake radars as far away as the UK. It set fire to 2,150 square kilometres of trees, shattered windows and led to people 400 kilometres away falling to the ground. For several days, the nights over Russia and even the rest of Europe were so bright that residents could read without the need for candles or lamps. According to experts who have studied the asteroid landing since, horses 600 kilometres away fell suddenly to the ground and sailors were hurled into the sea whilst houses at this distance trembled and parts of their structure fell. The light was described as being 'as bright as the sun', and even the train driver on the Trans-Siberian railway stopped dead, fearing the convoy would be thrown off the track or overturn. If it had landed in an inhabited area, the asteroid would have caused a massacre and wiped out a population equivalent to that of a small country. The object was never found and did not leave a crater – its size was calculated by the strength of the impact, described as the equivalent of 185 times that of the bomb which struck Hiroshima – and the most

common theory since was that it was made of ice and shattered upon contact with the earth, blending in with the snow or melting. But today's toddlers should reconsider if they decide, when they are old enough, that there is no point investing in a pension fund: at the time of Tunguska, 111 years ago, scientists did not have access to the same sophisticated equipment as nowadays.

No location

The 2019 DS1 is currently 50 million kilometres away, and Canarian Astrophysics Institute (IAC) area coordinator Javier Licandro says they will be able to tell, well before 26th February, 2082, roughly where it will land. It was first spotted on the last day of February this year, when it was a million kilometres away, and it has been gradually drifting farther and farther away from the earth, but asteroids are not unipolar and it is likely to get closer over the next six decades. Long before then, scientists will be able to warn global government officials so that anyone living in the risk area has time to move out. “The early determination of a possible impact allows us to take the necessary steps to avoid it or, least, minimise its effects,” says Julia de León, head researcher of the Solar System group at the IAC. “Our observations via telescope, and space missions such as Hera - organised by the European Space Agency and in which IAC investigators are taking part are essential in order to protect our planet from an asteroid landing on it.”

Welcome to Alghero

ALGHERO gets its name from the abundance of seaweed (alghe) in its surrounding waters. It was known as Algarium in the Middle Ages and Al Alguer and Barcelloneta under Spanish rule. Alghero 's origins date back to the X Century when the Genoese, with the help of Pisans, turned the Arabs away and obtained land grants from the Judges of Logudoro, one of the groups of judges that governed Sardinia during the Middle Ages. In 1713, when Alghero came under Austrian rule with the Treaty of Utrecht, Spain tried once again to take the city over but was obligated by the Treaty of London to yield Sardinia to the House of Savoy. Alghero was not again greatly disturbed by foreign influences until it suffered bombings during World War II. Fearing an invasion by the Allied forces, the Sardinians built bunkers in strategic locations around the city that still stand today as grim reminders of Alghero 's more troubled times. The old city is closed behind thick fortress walls, interrupted only by solemn towers. The old city's stone streets, narrow and bordered by shops, are dotted with randomly spaced and seemingly unplanned tiny piazzas (squares). The polychrome dome of the church of San Michele and the church of St. Francis' pointed Aragonese tower dominate the city. The monuments represent the gothic-Catalan style. Sightseeing begins at Porta a Terra Square, on the eastern margin of the old town that extends into the vast green area

of the public gardens where Giuseppe Manno's statue, a historian from Alghero, can be seen. The monument was made in 1894 by Pietra Canonica. San Francesco street includes the town's principal meeting place Sulis square where the view of the sea is interrupted by the impressive Espero Reial and Sulis towers. Along the seaside and at the end of Colombo Way is the recently restored San Giacomo Tower (San Jaume) next to the church of Our Lady of Carmelo from the XVI Century. The promenade Marco Polo extends past the bastion of San Giacomo, characteristic for its narrow openings from which canons were once fired. The seaside opens onto the beautiful panorama of the Algherese roads and the promontory that separates the city from the Porto Conte inlet. The small tower of Polveriera (or St. Barbara) is past the bastion, where the coast reaches the north-west end of the promontory and the old city is situated. Continuing along Magellano Way and the seaside, you will find the narrow wall passage with a series of arches that seem to close in around the city's antique dock. Continuing on, between the coastline and curved walls, you'll reach the summit in front of the doors that once opened to the sea. This is one of the historic accesses to the fortified city. Nearby there are the impressive ruins of the Maddalena Fort where Giuseppe Garibaldi disembarked the 14th of August 1855 as captain of the cargo ship "Il Lombardo".

Entering the old city, the visit starts in Piazza Civica (historically "placa de la Dressana"). Here medieval arches lean against the walls of Count Serra di Sant'Elia's Palace, the House of Savoy's Master of Ceremonies and the deconsecrated church of Rosario from the XVII Century. We cross the Duomo's small square, where we can see the front of the cathedral, dedicated to St. Mary, with a richly decorated apse and octagonal bell-tower inspired by the best examples of the late CatalanGothic period and constructed between 1562 and 1579. At Principe Umberto street n.11, you will find the interesting "casa Doria" from the XVI Century with its renaissance-styled facade and gothic windows. Just beyond it is Curia Palace, the headquarters of the Episcopal archives unified with the capitulary ones of the St. Mary church. At the end of the street is the Mercy Church. Another important church is dedicated to St. Michael and is near Ginnasio Square. Past the Carlo Alberto street intersection, you will come across one of the most interesting buildings of Catalan culture in Sardinia. The church complex, convent and St. Francis' cloister, was constructed in the first part of the 1300's and partially reconstructed at the end of the 1500's following its collapse in 1593, and finally restored in the XVIII Century. It was founded by the St. Francis convent monks who settled in Alghero prior to 1330 and who are still present today.

Spain to open its first-ever rape crisis centre Spain’s first-ever rape crisis centre is set to open in September and will include a free 24-hour helpline with multi-lingual operators. Counselling, emergency medical treatment, support and accompanying victims to police stations and hospitals are among the services provided round the clock, 365 days a year. A multi-disciplinary approach will help victims from the moment they suffer the attack onwards, including medium-term monitoring. The support person allocated will encourage the victim to describe the assault and accompany him or her if required, so he or she does not have to keep repeating the same story over and again, reliving the trauma. Although the centre is based in Madrid and run by the city council, rape or sexual assault victims from anywhere in Spain can call them and seek help by phone. A 'cultural mediation' service will be involved to ensure sensitive treatment for women of other races or religions where ethnic characteristics may make the experience in Spain more traumatic. Examples of this could be, perhaps, where a victim's culture means she feels ashamed at being raped and may be treated as a 'loose woman' by her family or community or as 'unfaithful' by her husband. The service, due to open after summer, is closely based upon the UK's and the Republic of Ireland's Rape Crisis Centre and responds to the European Union recommendation of at least one assistance network of this type being available for every 200,000 women.

Head of gender, diversity and equality at Madrid city council, Celia Mayer, says she hopes the centre's creation will inspire other towns and cities in Spain to follow suit. “Sexual violence is one of the types of gender violence that has the greatest impact on women's lives and is one that is the least developed, institutionally,” Councillor ayer says. “This means it is also one of the types that is less likely to be reported.” Research carried out in 2015 by the central government's ministry of social services into sexual harassment and assault produced figures that it believes could be very easily be applied to practically the whole of the western world, and are not just Spainspecific. They found that 14 percent of women have suffered some form of sexual violence at some point in their lives, either by acquaintances, total strangers, partners, ex-partners or family members. A total of 97 percent of women suffer, or have suffered, some form of sexual harassment when they have been out at night, a study by the Health and Community Foundation (FSC), presented in Barcelona this week, found. Their investigation revealed that 81 percent of women have put up with groping or other unwanted physical contact that was clearly not of a platonic or 'merely friendly' nature, 86% have suffered constant verbal pressure and hassle despite persistently refusing, 97 percent have been the target of 'uncomfortable' comments of a sexual nature from men, 44 percent have been 'cornered' or felt 'unable to get away',

and 22.5 percent raped, although only 5 percent have been physically overcome in order to be attacked, with the others being cases of 'date rape', or men taking advantage of them when they were asleep, unconscious or drunk, or who were afraid to fight back in case it cost them their lives and opted to freeze or 'play dead', literally or metaphorically. The stratified sample covered surveys by 1,500 women aged 16 and over across Spain, and show that over half of women who go out at night modify their behaviour – the way they dress, where they go, and how much they drink – as a precaution, or either go out in groups for 'safety in numbers' or opt not to go out at all.

Harassment

Half of respondents say they have suffered sexual harassment, from 'awkward' comments and persistence through to full-blown rape, on public transport, making this the third-most likely place where it would happen – parties, fiestas, clubs or anywhere

involving alcohol are where 78 percent of women say they have put up with unwanted male attention, and 62 percent say they have suffered it when walking or sitting alone outside in public. According to the FSC, who also surveyed men, a total of seven in 10 who go out partying have two main aims: to get drunk and to have sex. Among them, it is likely that a significant number are only interested in consenting sex, but the survey results were, by definition, unable to clarify this, since the research was based upon self-report. It did show, however, that 18 percent of men on nights out have offered alcohol or drugs to women to try to get them into bed. Spain is, statistically, one of the safest countries in Europe, if not the world, and has one of the planet's lowest violent crime rates, so the survey authors believe the figures could apply in any first-world nation and could well be even higher in many of these.

Spain in new bid to separate Gibraltar from UK Spain has again labelled Gibraltar a ‘colony’ in a renewed bid to separate it from Britain. Foreign Ministry officials attended a meeting organised by the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to the Countries and Colonial Peoples. Also known as the UN’s Committee of 24, the meeting, in Saint Georges, in the Caribbean saw Spain double down on its commitment to Gibraltar’s ‘decolonisation’. Madrid also called on the UK to fulfil the UN mandate on Gibraltar in the spirit of the Brussels Declaration of 27th November, 1984. It comes despite 99 percent of Gibraltarians rejecting shared sovereignty with Spain in the 2002 referendum. The Spanish have however consistently pushed a conversation on the Rock’s sovereignty, including during the Brexit process, as well as pressure from the far-right Vox party. Spain also highlighted the fact that it sees the Rock as being within its territory, unlike other so-called ‘colonies’. “This circumstance, recognised by the United Nations since 1965, makes the case of Gibraltar clearly different from that of other territories subject to decolonisation,” A Spanish Foreign Affairs spokesperson said. Madrid has also frequently targeted Gibraltar in controversial war-games off the Rock, which have been responded to by the UK’s Royal Navy.

Spain is Brits number one holiday choice despite Brexit concerns Spain continues to be the top holiday destination for Brits in 2019, despite Brexit, according to tour operator Thomas Cook. Although the number of UK residents who have booked their annual trips in European Union countries has gone down this year, following a continuing trend since the referendum on leaving the bloc in June 2016, Spain is still the most-chosen country for British holidaymakers. Thomas Cook says nearly half of all trips across the industry, not just through their own agencies, booked for this year are in countries outside Europe – 48 percent overall, or 10 percent higher than in 2018. But Spain accounts for the most bookings, followed by Turkey, Greece, the USA and Cyprus, in that order. Holidays in Tunisia are now experiencing an upsurge as the British foreign office lifted its recommendation against all but necessary travel to

the north African Mediterranean country just over a year ago. The advice against travel to Tunisia was put in place in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attack on a hotel beach in Sousse in June 2015, which ISIS claimed to have perpetrated and in which over 30 people – nearly all tourists and mostly Brits – were killed. The EU has already announced that no visa would be required for anyone from the UK travelling to one of the remaining 27 member States for periods of 90 days or fewer within a 180day period, in a bid to avoid barriers to tourism – however, with the pound sterling having depleted from around €1.40 to approximately €1.15 since the referendum, trips to European countries are now more expensive for British residents.

Spanish courts say Puigdemont can run in EU elections Former Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont is able to run in European elections on 26th May. Three Madrid courts said that he and two other ex-government officials who fled Spain after the unilateral secession bid – Toni Comín and Clara Ponsatí – may participate as candidates in the European Parliament election with the Lliures per Europa coalition. The decisions contradict the Central Electoral Commission, which had banned all three from running on the basis that, having fled Spain, they were technically living abroad yet not properly registered as Spaniards residing in another country. The Madrid courts have now confirmed an earlier opinion issued by the Supreme Court, which said that this situation did not make the three Catalan leaders ineligible. The higher court, however, had left the final

decision up to three administrative courts in Madrid. Supporters of Catalan independence hailed the decision by the Madrid courts. Spain’s conservative forces disagree with the decision, and the conservative Popular Party (PP), which is fiercely opposed to the Catalan independence drive, has said it will appeal the decision with the Constitutional Court. “We consider it fraud that a person who has fled the country may run in European elections without even living in Spain. We feel that Spanish democracy does not deserve this kind of insult,” said PP leader Pablo Casado. Inés Arrimadas, leader of the Catalan branch of Ciudadanos, said it was “shameful” that Spanish legislation, allows “a fugitive” like Puigdemont to run in elections.

READY TO SELL YOUR HOME? SHOULD YOU ASK YOUR FAMILY’S OPINION FIRST? Rebecca Serwotka

S

o you’ve thought about selling your home in Spain for quite some time, and you’ve come to the decision that now may be the right time to put your property on the market for sale. But you have one nagging feeling. What will your family think? Should you really check with your family first? I actually come across this situation quite a few times, but the straight and honest answer to that bugging question, is no! You shouldn’t need to ask their opinion.

Unless your family member/s are co-owners of the property with you, then there is no valid reason why you should be checking with them first. You know what their answer will be anyway. They’ll

want you to keep the house of course. Heck, they’re the ones getting free holidays, so why on Earth would they want you to sell? When I’m asked that question, my reply is always, “you’ve considered your family for long enough, but now you must think about yourself.” I know this can be difficult for some people, but if you have valid reasons why you want or need to sell your home, then the only people you should be checking with, is you. Your family are not the ones paying the bills, so don’t let them influence you against your decision. They really should be supportive to your needs, and not make you feel guilty about selling the place in which they spend their free holidays. It’s always a difficult decision to make when the time comes to put your property on the market, especially if you’ve had some wonderful memories in the home. And family may well have played a big part in creating those wonderful times. Even still, they should not influence you either way, whether to sell or keep your home. It should always be, your decision and no one else’s. At certain stages in your life, you need to think with your head and not with your heart. Guilt of not wanting to hurt your family’s feelings can ultimately sway you to make the wrong decision that’s best for you. As long as you’re the one that’s ready to let the house go, then I’m sure your family will respect your decision. Selling? Enjoy the journey! For tips and advice on selling, you can download our book “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying and Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy!” from our website: www.homes4u.es See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper.

Bingeworthy Box Sets The Staircase In 2001 novelist Michael Peterson's wife died, and he claimed she perished after falling down stairs at their home. The medical examiner, however, determined that she had been beaten with a weapon, which led to Peterson becoming a suspect in what would become a murder investigation. This series, which began with eight episodes in 2005 before being updated in 2013 and 2018, follows the investigation as it proceeds from Peterson's arrest to a verdict being reached in the ensuing trial. The real-life courtroom thriller offers a rare and revealing inside look at a high-profile murder trial and an examination of contemporary American justice.

The Queer Eye More than a decade after the original series went off the air, Netflix reboots the "Queer Eye" franchise with a new Fab Five and a new setting, trading in the concrete jungle of New York City for communities in and around Atlanta. The style experts forge relationships with men and women who often have different beliefs from them, leading to moments of social commentary interspersed with style advice. Advising people in need of lifestyle makeovers are food and wine specialist Antoni Porowski, interior designer Bobby Berk, grooming consultant Jonathan Van Ness, fashion designer Tan France and culture expert Karamo Brown, who reality TV fans may recognize as one of the housemates on "The Real World: Philadelphia." David Collins, who created the original show, is on board as an executive producer.

Having previously saved the lives of his daughter Kim and his now ex-spouse Leonore in Paris and Istanbul, former CIA agent Bryan Mills has returned to Los Angeles to celebrate Kim’s birthday. Being back on home turf doesn’t mean his troubles are over. Finding himself framed for homicide, Bryan has to flee from the LAPD, led by Inspector Frank Dotzler. However, it’s not just the police that are after him: Bryan must also dodge persistent assassination attempts as he seeks conclusive proof that he’s innocent of the murder.

AGAMED ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR THE SUMMER The water board, Agamed, has announced their plans to ensure the effective management of the water supply during the busy summer season. The meeting took place on 9th May in Torrevieja town hall. One of their priorities is the cleaning up of the sewage system in the town. There has been cleaning taking place

in the Avenida Habaneras-Palangre zone, Acequión and the Mediterráneo urbanisations. Action has also been taken to improve the drains around La Mata town centre, Avenida Europeas, the area of Punta la Vibora and the area near to Avenida Doctor Waksman. Actions have been taken during the night time in order not to cause traffic

delays. More attempts are being made to address issues to do with flooding. This follows on from the recent downpours that the area experienced between April 18th and 21st. At this time the rainfall rose to more than 200 litres per square metre which, as we know, caused severe flooding in some parts of the town.

Over this period Agamed were out to try and address some of the major difficulties. These included the break up of pipes, the blocking of canals and outlets and the replacement of drain covers where the flood water had forced them out. The water board were involved in the clean up campaign after the deluge. During its presentation Agamed also

reiterated their personnel policy, including the importance of the safety and welfare of their staff and consideration of the environment in which they operate. They have committed to the continued investment of money in ensuring good quality drinking water, the removal of waste and further works to combat flooding. Suzanne O’Connell

EMMERDALE SPOILER

Victoria Barton set to fall pregnant and keep the baby after brutal rape ordeal ... as disturbing scenes receive 39 Ofcom complaints. Emmerdale viewers were recently left stunned as Victoria Barton was brutally raped in horrifying scenes, with the episode attracting 39 Ofcom complaints. The character, portrayed by Isabel Hodgins, 25, was attacked by newcomer Lee, played by Kris Mochrie, during the final moments of Wednesday’s episode after a night out with her pals.

However, Victoria’s ordeal is set to continue as she soon discovers she is pregnant, with the character deciding to keep the baby. But amid the darkness of the storyline, there may be some light as it’s reported Victoria decides to give the tot to her brother Robert Sugden and his husband Aaron Dingle, with the couple currently desperate to have a baby of their own. A source revealed to The Sun: ‘Victoria makes the tough call to keep the baby and she hopes that Robert and Aaron will take it’.

Meghan and Harry named their son Archie after her beloved pet cat who ended up fat after she fed him frozen grapes, friends say. Meghan is believed to have taken inspiration for her son’s name from her pet cat. The moniker appears to be a reference to her beloved cat named Archie. The cat is believed to have died while Megan was away at college in Chicago.

Freddy Star

“I’m OK, getting tired more now but otherwise I’m doing good”: Freddie Starr’s final poignant message before I’m A Celebrity star’s body was found on floor of his Spanish home after his death aged 76. He was discovered dead on the floor of his £180,000 townhouse in Mijas, southern Spain. Police sources in the region said there was nothing to suggest the death of the comic was suspicious. Starr bought a flat in Mijas, Costa Del Sol after fleeing Britain to escape a millionpound legal bill. He was disgraced after losing a court case against Karin Ward, 57, who said he put his hand up her skirt.

Katie Price declares she loves ex Peter Andre and apologises for hurting him in shock tweet ... days before the 10th anniversary of their split. They went their separate ways in May 2009, following a turbulent four year marriage. The former glamour model, 40, tweeted: “I had a tough year last year! A person stirred trouble with me and Pete, which he reacted to protect our children!” with Pete thanking her for the apology soon after. She said: “Yes I said things but I was upset and didn’t mean harm! Me and Pete love each other really lol! I’m sorry @MrPeterAndre if I hurt you!’ Peter soon responded on Twitter, writing: “Do you know what, I really appreciate you saying that. Thank you”.

RESTAURANT RULES TO IGNORE There are a host of rules around how to behave in a restaurant. While some are good manners, others are just downright silly and antiquated. From outdated ideas about who should pay the check and sharing food to how to really order wine, these are the etiquette rules you should probably ignore and get on with enjoying yourself. Wait for everyone to be served before you eat There’s no hard and fast rule on whether to wait for others. In some fast, casual or modern fusion restaurants, servers bring out dishes as soon as they’re cooked. In this situation it's fair to enjoy them while they’re still fresh and hot rather than waiting for the whole group. Equally at restaurants that serve small plates such as tapas, tuck in as soon as the dishes start arriving. You don't want the food to go cold. Ordering the same number of courses Perhaps in a formal setting or if you don’t know the group this may apply. For example, it would be jarring at a business meeting or your partner’s mother’s birthday if you order cocktails, a starter and dessert, while the rest of the group sticks to main dishes and water. Not to mention it would be rude to do this if someone else is paying. That said, between a group of friends who are most likely splitting the check or paying individually, we think it’s fair to order what you fancy. Leave as soon as you’ve finished This rule is a tricky one. A restaurant will want to turn tables so they can seat more people, especially at busy times, and if people are lining up, it’s good manners to leave fairly promptly. If you want to continue the conversation, order another round of coffees or head to the bar. If the restaurant is not busy, stay as long as you want.

Always say you like the wine It’s fine to say you don’t like the wine and definitely speak up if it’s corked and tastes off. When trying a glass, give it a sniff and take a sip. If it's not for you or something doesn’t taste right, it’s OK to say. Wine is the most expensive part of the meal and you want to enjoy it. Take a look at our ultimate guide to choosing the right wine every time. Don’t reach across to sample your companion’s food Obviously leaning across someone and taking food from their plate without asking is rude but it’s nice to sample different dishes. Offer up some of your own first and then politely ask if you could try some of their meal. Delivering a sample on a side plate is preferable to passing a precariously balanced fork over the dinner table. However, you’re the best judge of what’s acceptable within your company. You must use the right cutlery The golden rule about working from the outside in still stands (so you’d use the furthest away from your plate for appetizers), but don’t get too stressed out about it. Really, what’s one soup-shaped spoon among friends? Don’t use your phone Not making loud calls during a meal is a pretty reasonable rule to follow. If you’re waiting for a friend to arrive and they’re running late, don't worry about sending a message or catching up on an email or two. We think taking a quick photo of a beautiful plate of food is acceptable too.

CELEBRITY CHEESE

A group of celebrities including Professor Green and Heston Blumenthal have shown they are full of the milk of human kindness by allowing researchers to produce a selection of “unique” cheeses made with bacteria taken from their own skin (really!) The strong-stomached research team also enlisted the help of Blur bassist Alex James, former Great British Bake Off contestant and food writer Ruby Tandoh and Madness frontman Suggs to participate in its “human cheese” endeavour. Named “Selfmade”, the project began with biodesigner Helene Steiner and her team taking samples of skin from areas including the armpits, toes, belly button and nostrils of their high-profile subjects. The team grew starter cultures that were then combined with fresh, pasteurized milk to create five human cheeses. They have been maturing for months, and the result is five “unique microbial portraits” in the form of a semi-hard Comté cheese courtesy of Blumenthal, a hard crumbly Cheshire cheese (James), a creamy mozzarella (Professor Green), a Stilton (Tandoh) and a Cheddar (Suggs). The cheeses will be showcased in a refrigerated display at a forthcoming exhibition, Food: Bigger than the Plate, at the V&A in London, alongside dozens of other projects exploring the future of food. “Making ‘human cheese’ is a fascinating journey into the world of microbes, from their culinary importance to the vital role they play in how our bodies work,” said exhibition co-curator Catherine Flood. “Many of the microbes involved in cheesemaking bear a close relationship to those found on human skin,” she noted. “The similarities between cheese aromas and body odours are no coincidence. Whether we find these odours disgusting or delicious has a great deal to do with context and psychology.” Ms Flood said she hoped the cheeses, which will

be available to view when the exhibition opens on 18th May, would help to challenge the negative views many hold about the microbial world. Adventurous gourmands keen to tuck into a hunk of Suggs Cheddar will have to wait until the team has determined that its human cheeses are safe to eat, though. “The cheeses are being sequenced in the lab to find out exactly what species of bacteria they contain and whether they are edible in terms of food safety,” Ms Flood said. One person who won’t be raising a stink if the cheeses do prove inedible is Professor Green. The musician admitted he “can’t stand the smell of cheese” and insisted that his samples be used to produce mozzarella as it is the only cheese he eats.

Surprising habits that age you... Humans have always been obsessed with looking and feeling younger. We obsess over every new worry line, stress over every grey hair, and revamp our wardrobes to create the impression that we're not as old as we actually are. But in many cases, it's not the finer points of our appearance that contribute to aging, but the habits we maintain on a regular basis. For example, little things like slouching over our phones and sleeping on sub-par pillowcases can make us appear older and contribute to long-term health issues that age us beyond our years. And while some bad habits are obvious (for example, smoking and sunbathing are not on this list), others are far more surprising. Read on to learn which habits you'll want to look out for. You bounce from one fad diet to the next. Those worried about living healthier often start by eating healthier. But jumping on the latest fad diet can have the exact opposite result, especially since a diet that involves serious changes to your eating habits usually doesn’t stick— and often just leads to the next fad diet.Yo-yo dieting can contribute to a loss of fat-free mass (muscle and bone) longterm. Loss of fat-free mass can lead to poor mobility, increased fall-risk, and lower overall strength. In studies of those whose weight-cycled, a higher ratio of fat—compared to fat-free mass—was found when participants regained some or all their original weight. You drink from water bottles No, this doesn’t have anything to do

with the chemicals that can leach off of plastic bottles (though that’s something to consider, too). According to beauty specialists drinking regularly from water bottles can cause wrinkles. How, you ask? Drinking from water bottles causes us to purse our lips repeatedly, and even though the water hydrates our skin, some doctors believe that the repeated lip pursing causes our lips to wrinkle more. The solution is to drink from widemouthed bottles, or, if you need to use a small-mouthed bottle, then squirt the water into your open mouth. You sit for more than four hours a day. You’ve probably heard that sitting is the new smoking—but you might not realise just how much it can affect the aging process. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Aging Research found that those who were sedentary for more than four hours a day were associated with lower odds of “aging successfully,” due to a combination of physical, psychological, and social health. Those who were sedentary for fewer than two hours a day were 43 percent more likely to age successfully. That’s because sitting for extended periods can decrease oxygen intake and atrophy your muscles. These factors contribute to weight gain and inhibit your body’s production of feel-good endorphins, such as dopamine.

You have a soft spot for heavy earrings. It may sound strange, but your earlobes could be a dead giveaway that you’re getting up there in age. And if you’re in the habit of wearing big, heavy

down an ear and cause it to stretch over the years. Ear piercings also weaken the earlobe and can stretch and tear. A simple solution is: Lobe Wonder support patches, which attach to the back of the earlobe to support it and counteract the weight of the jewelry. You drink too much dairy. Sure, calcium is good for you. But a glass of milk every day may not be all that healthy. Dairy is proinflammatory to the gut which means that if you are consuming dairy on a daily basis, you are increasing your risk of gut inflammation. With our gut as our major organ of not only digestion but also detoxification, a lack of proper detoxification can lead to skin that appears older. Proper gut health is what provides us with young, fresh, glowing skin.

earrings, that could be even more accurate. As we get older, our earlobes droop (like everything else in our body) and we get stretched and elongated earlobes. For women, it’s even worse than for men, since heavy earrings can weigh

You exercise too much. While exercise is key to a long and healthy life, there can certainly be too much of a good thing. Miano says that when you exercise too hard or too frequently, it can make it so your muscles never have time to fully recover. This can lead to inflammation, poor sleep, and a compromised immune system. Especially for women as they age, the stress caused by excessive exercise

can raise cortisol levels and lead to hormone imbalances. Depending on your age, you’ll want space your workouts anywhere from 24 to 36 hours apart. You don’t have a functional sleep routine. Sleep plays a huge role in our health and our aging. Getting regular, deep sleep can make the difference between looking bright and chipper in the morning and appearing 10 years older than you actually are. It ages you faster to be chronically underslept. People tend to snack mindlessly when they are tired. You won’t be on top of your game at work if you are exhausted. We make more mistakes when we are tired. You don’t pay attention to the ingredients on your skin care products. The skin care products you use every day could be hiding some seriously scary ingredients. On average, women use beauty products that contain more than 120 chemicals per day. Many of those chemicals have been linked to or are suspected to cause hormonal imbalance and disruption, which can lead to premature aging. Our skin is our largest organ and what you put on it is absorbed into your body. Many beauty and skin care items contain hormone-disrupting chemicals such as phthalates, parabens, pesticides, and plastics. These chemicals can mimic hormones, destroy others and cause internal signaling issues, leading to premature cell death. Your dermatologist will be able to help you decode these labels and recommend the safest products.

Fuel for fitness Whether or not you consider yourself a morning person, there are some undeniable benefits of working out in the morning. An a.m. workout can help you shake out stress, boost your mood, and make it easier to manage anxiety levels throughout the rest of the day. Squeezing physical activity into your morning gives you one less thing to worry about at the end of the day, and it can help you fall asleep faster at night. These are all great things, but if you're waking up earlier than usual, scheduling a workout first thing in the morning can screw up your breakfast routine. Most of us have a hard time locating our workout leggings first thing in the morning, let alone making a full meal, but eating the right thing before a morning workout could make

the experience more pleasant for a few reasons. For starters, when you wake up earlier than usual, you might experience mild nausea due to low blood sugar and an out-of-whack circadian rhythm. And that's probably not how you want to feel going into an indoor cycling class or hot yoga class. The best way to remedy this kind of queasiness is to eat a snack or small meal, just to get something in your stomach. Now, if you're looking to really optimise your workout, you'd want to eat something high in carbohydrates before your workout. This increases your energy levels during exercise, which you might need if you're feeling groggy, and allows you to exercise at higher intensity levels. To

reduce any nausea or other unwanted gastrointestinal symptoms, you'd ideally eat something low in fat and fibre, that can digest quickly. For example, you might want to eat a breakfast of peanut butter and jam on whole wheat bread, oatmeal with fruit and walnuts, a banana and toast, Greek yogurt, or an egg on an English muffin. All of these food combinations would provide that carb-y energy kick that you need for your regular morning workout, without making you want to be sick mid-burpee. However, if your workout is on the intense side (like, if you're training for a marathon and completing a long training run), then your body would need slightly more fuel before, during, and after.

Gucci’s lipstick has landed...with 58 shades Brace yourselves for more Gucci brights as the Italian brand has makes its official return to the makeup world. The new lipstick collection has just dropped featuring a whopping 58 shades. There's the same abundance of vibrant colours we've come to expect from creative director Alessandro Michele, from bold reds to head-turning pinks and dramatic black, chosen with diversity and inclusion in mind. There's three different formulas to choose from: 36 Rouge à Lèvres Satin (satin finish), 18 Rouge à Lèvres Voile

(sheer finish), and four Baume à Lèvres (translucent balmy finish). 'Make-up is something poetic and fleeting that you can add to your face, changing or highlighting something about yourself,' Michele said. 'I find it an almost magical language, strongly linked to the other details I use for the expression of the self, such as jewellery and a hairstyle. Of all these aspects needed to emphasise or underline an aspect of ourselves, make-up is the most immediate and the oldest way, making it the most fascinating. 'Lipstick is the most beautiful object you can find inside a handbag,' he continued. 'It is the most fascinating because it has always had a beautiful scent — we made Gucci lipsticks perfumed with violet. Lipstick is a playful object because it recalls crayons that children colour with. Lipstick also symbolises the world of cinema, and all the famous lips from Hollywood.' Given Michele's love affair with art, the new lipstick bullets come in to-diefor gold tones featuring Art Deco motifs as well as turquoise and ivory colours adorned with a floral design that calls to mind Gucci's signature fragrance, Gucci Bloom. The one

consistency for every lipstick is a golden base and violet scent. Michele, who launched Gucci's new fragrances to much acclaim, says he was inspired by the vintage glamour of the Fifties, specifically 'Hollywood divas and the mythology of cinema, which first put lips in the spotlight.' This is reflected in the names of the lipstick shades, from Jean Harlow to Bette Davis. As for the campaign imagery, teasers have appeared on the brand's Instagram page, shot by Martin Parr. They don't strive for perfection because that's not who the Gucci Beauty girl is. The Gucci Beauty girl is Dani Miller, lead singer of punk band Surfbort, whose gapped-tooth wide grin celebrates quirks. The campaign also features a diverse cast of models like Mae Lapres, Achok Majak and Ellia Sophia Coggins. The rebirth of Gucci Beauty will see a series of subsequent product launches that gives each makeup category its moment in the spotlight and allows the makeup offering to steadily grow in keeping with the brand's aesthetic. The lipstick collection is available now on gucci.com

John from Los Balcones asks: Hi aunty love your page in the Costa Blanca People and I have

found it very helpful, especially for Virus Protection. I have 2 problems that I hope you can help with. I have just got the new windows 10 updates no problem, but when I try to access some files I keep getting a message “UNAUTHARISED CHANGES BLOCKED” and it says “Controlled Folder Access Blocked C:\program file. I have to cancel this message before I can carry on which is a bind. The other problem is on my phone. I have downloaded Google Chrome as my browser but since then I have this app called CHROMES which seems to mess up my phone and makes it slow etc. What is Chromes and how do I get rid of it? Many thanks and keep up the good work. Aunty Says: Hi John. This could be Windows Defender getting a bit confused and

Ray via email asks: Hi Aunty. I read your comments about uninstalling anything to do with Advance System Care & IObit apps. I use them all the time but now you have spooked me! I also use AVG antivirus, what do you recommend? many thanks for your time and information. Aunty Says: Hello Ray. I would definitely recommend uninstalling anything to do with IObit od Advanced System Care as I have seen numerous problems caused by these apps, including downloading and installing spyware onto your computer. AVG has gotten a little bit bloated and slow lately so I still champion the Microsoft Windows Defender that come bundled with Windows 10. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week

Can my British registered car have an ITV? A common question which often causes confusion is whether a foreign registered vehicle, such as an English registered car for example, whose MOT is due, can have an ITV in Spain. The simple answer is no, a foreign registered vehicle cannot have an ITV inspection. The mandatory vehicle inspection must be done in the country where the vehicle is registered, so in our example, it can only be an MOT inspection conducted in the UK. It is however true that a foreign vehicle can undergo an ITV test. If you take any vehicle to an ITV test centre and pay the appropriate fee they will conduct an inspection, but this inspection is considered voluntary, and does not satisfy the mandatory legal requirements for the vehicle. In fact, the report issued by the ITV centre will state that it is a voluntary ITV at the top of the document, which is why there are cases of foreign

cars being issued with the report, the problem being that it is not legal. It is perfectly legal to drive a foreign registered vehicle in a country where it does not normally reside, such as if you are on holiday for example, but if the new country is to become a permanent location for the vehicle, then it must be reregistered in that country. By the way, in case you are wondering, the same situation in reverse applies in the UK. Every day the British traffic police are dealing with foreign registered vehicles driving on the UK´s roads which should have been reregistered. Whatever country you are driving in, you must return to the vehicle´s registered country to satisfy the mandatory requirements such as the vehicle testing relevant to that country. If however you have lost the MOT certificate for your British registered vehicle, a new service has been launched

to allow you to obtain a replacement, for free, from an official UK Government website, https://www.gov.uk/replacinglost-damaged-mot-certificate. You can get a replacement MOT certificate online if you’ve lost or damaged the original by visiting the website and submitting the vehicle registration (number plate) and the 11-digit number from the vehicle log book (V5C).

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, we probably saw it coming. Even after the preceding week in football where shock comeback followed shock comeback, it was always likely to end like this. Yes, Manchester United lost at home to already relegated Cardiff City meaning they finish 6th in the Premier League. 6th! I jest, of course. Nobody, not even the United fans, really care about all that. It was all about a nail-biting end to the Premier League season. The only thing was, it was only nail-biting for about 83 seconds. But we will come on to all that, I promise. We need to talk about Europe. Who would have thought that Big Vinny‘s pile-driver against Leicester City would have been so quickly forgotten? I’ll admit it, I wasn’t that surprised to see Liverpool turn it around against Barcelona at Anfield. After all, they’d

played well in Spain and they were able to pick an attack that didn’t feel obliged to give it to Mohamed Salah and watch him try and do it all on his own. Incredibly, the lack of Salah meant Liverpool played a little bit differently but let’s not pretend that at least 85% of their comeback was down to the fact that Barcelona have the mental strength of a wet paper towel. Were Liverpool lucky that Andrew Robertson had to go off and their very own Gini-in-a-bottle came off the bench to score a brace? Maybe, maybe. One thing that wasn’t luck was Liverpool’s fourth. Apparently, the Liverpool scouts had said that Barcelona like to spend at least a minute having a moan about any decision that goes against them and they were proven to be right with that late corner. Divock Origi’s not had a bad few days, either. Winners against Everton and Newcastle and then scoring two of the most important goals he will ever score in the Champions League semi-final. Will that be enough to make him an Anfield regular? Er, no. Have you actually watched him play? Liverpool’s “greatest European comeback in the history of the world” lasted even less time than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s honeymoon period. What about that night in Amsterdam? No, not that one. We don’t talk about that one. I’m talking about Wednesday night. I think Jose Mourinho summed it up quite nicely. “Ajax and their philosophy can watch the Champions League Final on their sofa at home.” He’s still the most brutal man in football. But didn’t Spurs do well? Even after Kieran Trippier seemed to be on a oneman mission to save Tottenham fans from extortionate travel expenses to Madrid in June, eh? I know clubs put a lot of time and effort into watching opposition setpieces and all that, but who on Earth felt it would be a good idea for Tripper to pick up that 18-year-old man-child, the Ajax captain De Ligt? The English game has certainly progressed into something far more technical over the years, but it was nice to see the Poch take us back to the 1980s by sticking on the big lad up top and smashing long ball after long ball into him until Ajax folded. Unsurprisingly, Fernando Llorente didn’t trouble the scorers but the havoc he created seemed to create enough space for Lucas Moura to net a secondhalf hat-trick that was barely believable. Spurs, having been pretty much out of

the competition after three group games, will face Liverpool in Madrid. And the best moment of all this crazy European football? Easyjet shamelessly advertising flights from the UK into Europe for just £49.99. Not on the weekend of June 1st, that’s for sure. Arsenal and Chelsea completed the set on Thursday night, the Gunners easing past Valencia in Spain thanks to a treble

to make sure. 97 points and no league title to show for it? If you really, really try you could feel sorry for Liverpool. If you really try. As well as a Champions League Final they now have the challenge of not becoming the modern-day version of that Kevin Keegan Newcastle United side; pretty to watch, incredibly entertaining but, ultimately, trophyless.

by Yo-Pierre. Chelsea needed spot-kicks to knock out German opposition in Eintracht Frankfurt. The reason the Germans lost? “I don’t think enough English players took the penalties,” said Frankfurt General Manager Fredi Bobic, still finding time to remind English football fans of something that still really hurts. The two London clubs and their fans would love to be spending thousands of pounds to get to Madrid for their final. They have to find a way through a warzone to get to Baku in Azerbaijan. That should be a synch. Anyway, the Premier League came to an end on Sunday with one of those rare occasions where every single match kicked off at the same time. And, for 83 seconds, it looked like Liverpool might complete their second smash-and-grab of the week as Brighton’s Glenn Murray scored the opening goal at the Amex. With Liverpool already leading against Wolves, it couldn’t happen, could it? Er, no. 83 seconds later and Sergio Aguero (who else?) equalised and you just knew the game was up. Brighton scoring once? OK, could happen. Twice? Not a chance. And City put four away just

Apparently, Wolves fans were celebrating imaginary Brighton goals just to mess with the heads of their opposing supporters at Anfield. That’s the kind of tomfoolery we can all get behind, I am sure. You have to doff your cap momentarily for Peppy G’s Man City side who defended their 100 point tally last season with 98 this time around. 198 points in two seasons kinda deserves two titles, really. City have become the first time to defend the Premier League title since Manchester United used to be good. And, as we know, that was a very long time ago. I wasn’t joking when I said they lost at home to already relegated Cardiff City. 20. 2-0! Is it utterly outlandish to wonder whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might not be in charge at the start of next season? Ole might well be at the wheel but how many more times will the old banger he is driving break down? The chassis is clearly full of rust and some idiot of a boyracer has spent the last couple of years adding random bits of modification that really were not needed. United will finish 6th which means Europa League football next season. But here’s the kicker. If Watford beat City in

Quesada Bowls Club Report A scorching week in the sun for our bowls players this week as temperatures soared towards 30 degrees! In the South Alicante Summer League Spitfire Division, there was a reversal of fortunes for Quesada Lancasters and Blenheims. Lancasters played San Miguel Cristians and unfortunately lost the match 11-0 points and 117-52 shots. While the Blenheims played San Miguel Moors and won the match 10-2 points and 93-66 shots. Well done Blenheims. Meanwhile in the VCL league Quesada Lions first match of the week was against Horadada resulting in a very creditable draw 6 points each with the Lions winning the shots 92-80. In the second match of the week they played Greenlands and again had a very creditable draw 6 points each, this time winning the shots by just one 89-88. This puts them in second place in the league - keep up the good work Lions!! Members finished the week on a high with our presentation

evening on Friday night at The Club, Quesada, with entertainment, a hot and cold buffet and lots of dancing. Congratulations to all of the winners of the Quesada Bowling Club Championships: Ladies Singles - Mel Highland Men’s Singles - Terry Morgan Ladies Pairs - Violet Campbell and Sandra Heath Mens Pairs - George Carnell and GrahamPhillips Mixed Trips - Mel Highland, Peter Morgan, Jason Prokopowycz

Mixed Rinks - Terry Morgan, Claire Dye, Colin Highland, Peter Farrell. There are no league matches for the next two weeks because of the Nationals competition 11-25th May which will be played at Emerald Isle and Greenlands. Its promising to be an exciting competition so please go along and support the players if you can. Anyone interested in joining Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard. newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk by Dee Stephenson

the FA Cup Final, United will have to play in the second qualifying round of Europe’s second-tier competition. And that kicks off on the same day that United are pencilled in to play in some glorified money-spinning preseason International Champions Cup farce match in the USA. Awkward. Oh, and their final points tally was as close to Neil Warnock’s relegated team as it was to the Champions, City. Chelsea ended up finishing third and might win some silverware to boot. Has that been that bad a season under Maurizio Sarri? I think we’ll be seeing him again next time. Even if they can’t sign anyone. Sarri must be delighted at the thought of whacking Michy B up top alongside Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic next season. But hey, Ibrahima Bakayoko is just his cup of midfield tea. Spurs were mentally still in the Netherlands as they allowed Theo Walcott to score at their new home. It finished 2-2, but nobody cares or will remember. It meant that Spurs did avoid the humiliation of an 8-goal swing in favour of Arsenal which would have seen their friends down the road steal into the prestigious 4th place. Arsenal did Burnley 3-1, Yo-Pierre getting another couple and finishing the season as the joint-top-scorer in the Premier League alongside Sadio Mane and Salah. Crystal Palace and Bournemouth put on the kind of exhibition that you’d see on a Sunday morning in Croydon where most of the players are still inebriated from the night before. To suggest the game had an end-of-season feel would be like suggesting that Tottenham’s last minute winner against Ajax was a bit of a shock. It ended 5-3 to Palace, young Mark Travers quickly learning what it’s really like to play in goal for the Cherries. Fulham appointed Scotty Parker as the permanent manager in midweek following a great run of form. And, guess what? You got it. Fulham got spanked 40 at home to Newcastle United. I know, Newcastle scored four in London! It must have been the last game of the season or something. Watford warmed up for Saturday’s FA Cup Final by losing 4-1 at home to West Ham and seeing a key man get himself suspended for Wembley. They will probably beat City now because football has a habit of being like that at the moment. Football, eh?

CostaBlancaPeople 14th-20th May 2019

We Fished the 8th round of the Spring series at the El Bosquet complex on Tuesday the 7th of May. The Temperature was around 17 degrees on arrival with clear blue skies. Unfortunately this caused a massive hatch of Mosquitos that plagued the anglers throughout the match. Seventeen anglers took part and due to this we had to use numers 1 to 19. Winner on the day drawn on the old back channel and fishing pellet and bread was Lenny Bolton with 23.46kg, second was Richard King who drawn on peg 12 fished the feeder catching several carp and large mullet for 18.02kg and third was the ever reliable Neil McBernie with 15.90kg. There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club. All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.es or from Terrry on 965328368

RODS & REELS

The following day we made the sometimes tricky journey to The Embalse De Pedrera. The club would like to Thank Richard´´TrIcky Dickie¨ Wood who went down a few days earlier and made repairs to the entrance road and access was a little easier. 10 Anglers took part on what was a glorious day with temperatures reaching 31 degrees but saw some gruesome sites with one angler inparticular sitting in his underwear for most of the match. The match was pegged around either side of the old match point and the weights were very encouraging. Doug Horblow ran out a very close winner with a fantastic weight of 29.60kg caught on the feeder using pellet. Bill reade was second with 28.68kg fishing paste on the pole over hemp and third was a scantilly clad Ian Brown with 12.78kg who fished corn on the feeder. There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423

Imanyo Golf Society “Parkinson’s Vase” This is our fifth year for raising money for this popular competition the “Parkinson Vase” a special thanks goes to Geoff Ham, the sponsor of the day, who is a Parkinson’s sufferer and specially travelled from the UK for the competition. Nearest the pins were won by , hole 3 Martin Gadney, hole 8 “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 12 Chris Houghton, hole 16 “Keep it in the Family” Wendy Ralph. We raised a grand total on the day of €310, this was all in aid of Parkinson’s, the fund raising was made up of 1 football card with

Las Ramblas Golf Society On Monday six teams of four players competed in a 6x6x6. For anyone unfamiliar with this format, it’s the best single score to count over the 1st six holes, the best two scores combined over the next six and finally the best

WALKING FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT Friday 10th May saw four teams compete for the 2019 Algorfa Trophy ; Esquina Park Rangers, Portobello, Lo Crispin and Tees Valley from England. Esquina Park Rangers, sponsored by Bar Esquina in

Ciudad Quesada, came out on top, winning 2-0 against Tees Valley, 10 against Portobello and a 2-1 win against Lo Crispin. Runners-up were Portobello, Tees Valley then Lo Crispin. Man of the Tournament went to

Esquina Park Ranger's Stuart Beddows. A big thank you to the Mayor of Algorfa, Manuel Ros Rodes, for donating and presenting the trophies to the winning teams.

three combined scores over the last six. In theory ‘par’ would be 72 points so for our winning team of John & Ellen Drakesmith, Mike Chapman and Maria Oldenziel to come in with 83 points was a great effort. Mind you, the runners

up consisting of Nigel Price, Terry Field, Ron Phipps and Marleen Billen were only one point behind them! Wednesday and it was the ‘big one’, The President’s Day Trophy. The winner of this year’s covetedprize was our newest member Paul Brown. He took the title with a score of 43 points and forced Mike Chapman into second spot with a very admirable 40 points. Third place went to Annemarie Weisheit who recorded 37 points. There were plenty of prizes for nearest the pins and ‘2’sand our thanks go to Dave Pulling for providing the beers and snacks at the half way stage. On Friday we played a ‘bowmaker’ which is the best three scores out of four to count on each hole (see this is educational as well!) There’s an old saying ‘beware of the injured golfer’ which was certainly the case today as Lindsay Forbes, who hasn’t been around for a couple of weeks, managed 5 birdies in his round! His team, which included Nick Campbell, Reg Akehurst and Maria Oldenziel took first place with an impressive 120 points. Finally, in the words of Steve Sax, ‘You can’t call golf a sport. You don’t run, jump, pass or shoot. All you have to do is buy some clothes that don’t match.’ Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell
