BITE SIZE The ongoing story of NEWS: rubbish collection Continued from page 3 10km and half marathon options. Four ambulances will need to be made available along with a doctor and a first aid point.

Off-duty policeman prevents attack An off-duty policeman intervened as a British man was attacking his sister in the calle Caballero de Rodas in the centre of Torrevieja at 10pm on 12th May. The victim and the aggressor were around 30 to 31 years old and there were many onlookers who were not intervening but instead were taking photos and videos on their mobiles. The local police officer, who was driving in the area, intervened, preventing the assailant from continuing to punch the victim as she was lying on the ground. The man at first put up a struggle and other local police officers and the Guardia Civil then arrived and received slight injuries as the man continued to resist arrest. The two people appeared to have been drinking and were arrested and sentenced in a quick trial.

Public consultation on dog beach requested Torrevieja town council wishes to request permission to hold a vote on the location of a beach for dogs. The Home Office has to allow the vote to go ahead and the issue will be discussed at a special meeting of the town hall council. The location of the dog beach has always been contentious and the council has promised that its current placement is only a temporary one until the decision can be finalised. The plan was always to hold the vote at the same time as the town local elections. People can choose between Punta Margalló, Cala Carabineros, Cala de los Trabajos and Cala del Moro. The last three locations can not be used between March 1st and June 30th. The two other possibilities of Ferrís and La Mata have been ruled out. Although all the local political parties are in agreement with the Continued on page 8

Once more the rubbish collection contract is in the news. For the past four years the local government in Torrevieja has struggled to find a solution that’s both good value and contracted correctly. The subject is always in and out of the papers in Torrevieja and in Orihuela Costa. The reason, is that collecting and disposing of refuse commands big money, around 16 million euros a year. As the four party council is in its last weeks of government it is making one last attempt to put this issue to sleep. Torrevieja Town Council is planning to tender the waste collection contract, street cleaning and beach cleaning before the hand over to the next government on May 26th. The specifications for putting the contract to tender have more or less been in place since the beginning of 2017. However, the minority position of the four-

party councillors has meant that they have been unable to pursue their wish to have a correctly contracted cleaning service. Now, however, we are told that they no longer need the agreement of the majority of the councillors including those in opposition, and that they can go ahead with the agreement of governing councillors only. If this is passed then the publication of the details of the contract can take place and the process can begin. The current cleaning service is carried out by Acciona. They have done so without a contract since June 2016. Their contract was originally first awarded in 2004 and was guaranteed for ten years. After the 10 years expired it was extended for another two years. However, the four-party government team has always had in mind to put the contract out to tender again and take over control of its management. Without having a clear majority, this has proved impossible to do. Many people are unhappy with the current cleaning service. People complain both in the urbanisations and the town centre itself. There are concerns about insufficient containers, lack of litter bins and the use of old and outdated machinery. Certainly the need to look afresh at how the contract is carried out and the stock of trucks involved is evident. The new contract will require environmental quality certificates and the electric operation of auxiliary vehicles. The government wants the collection to be done through a lateral loading system and street washing to be extended beyond a few areas in the very centre of the town. The former mayor of Torrevieja and PP councillor Pedro Hernández Mateo.was imprisoned for three years for falsifying documents and had another 11 years of disqualification from public office imposed. The fraudulent awarding of the 2004 contract to Acciona was at the centre of his conviction. With such big money involved it is surely time to have a clear, transparent tendering and contracting process in place. Suzanne O’Connell

financial strain and affected people’s health, making them physically ill with worry. There was a lot of concern at the time, but no-one seems to care now.” The quote for the demolition came in at around 40,000 euros a figure that the owners of the collapsed houses just couldn’t meet. And with questions still unanswered about the reason and therefore the liability of the collapse, the owners are questioning why they should have to pay at all. At the most recent urbanisation AGM the committee voted to cover half of the cost of the demolition and then a group of ‘interested parties’ agreed to fund the remaining half. So with the money in an account people are bemused as to why the demolition still hasn’t happened.

Whilst visiting the Town Hall for an update, one resident was told that there was not even an application in place for the demolition. They were also told that the Town Hall has to verify that none of the properties have been sold since the collapse. The constant delays have resulted in the ‘interested parties’ now threatening to withdraw their half of the funding and those affected are getting nowhere trying to get a date for the demolition. The Costa Blanca People spoke to a Town Hall representative yesterday for an update and were told that ‘we are currently getting the owners to sign the permission form for the demolition and there are 2 or 3 signatures outstanding. As soon as everyone has signed the demolition will go ahead’.

BITE SIZE Winners of the ‘ephemeral’ Dirty Alicante architecture award NEWS: Continued from page 5 principal of a beach where owners can take their dogs, the exact location has always been in dispute.

Earthquake training The volunteers belonging to Protección Civil de Torrevieja took part in a training course in search and rescue. The objective of the course is to train them in the case of how to take action following an earthquake including the evacuation and extraction of people from confined spaces. The course was in two parts with one including theory and the rest focussing on practice. It was delivered by USAR13 which stands for Urban Search And Rescue and who are an independent and non-profit making association. USAR13 not only carry out search and rescue but are also involved in social programmes and canine education activities. Dogs are an important part of any search and rescue attempt. This is not the only course that Civil Protection will engage in over the course of the year. There are ten more training opportunities planned which include first aid, the use of a defibrillator, putting out forest fires and searching for missing people. ‘We can say that with the number of courses that the group attends that Torrevieja’s Civil Protection are one of the most well-trained groups in the Valencian Community,’ said Councillor Javier Manzanares.

Another culinary event Torrevieja’s hospitality association has announced another event in celebration of food in the town. On Saturday 29th June the ‘Smells and taste of rice in the Vega Baja’ will be held in the Marina Salinas. The event will take place from 11am until 6pm and you will be able to sample the different dishes from 12pm until 5pm. Taking part will be different bars and restaurants and although some professionals are the intended audience too, the event is open to the public. Along with there being plenty of rice dishes there will also be music and some performances. It is expected that around 20 restaurants specialising in paella and rice will take part. There will be opportunity to try many different types of rice and you can buy the tickets to sample the dishes on offer on the day of the event. Currently the organisers are advertising amongst members of the hostelry industry in and around Torrevieja. More information will be available to the general public closer to the event. The councillor for commerce, Manuela Osuna, has announced the winners of the project ‘Ephemeral Architecture’ which saw students from Alicante University decorating 15 shops around the town centre. This is the second year that the competition has taken place and their designs have brightened up many shop windows and interiors.

The first prize was awarded to ‘Holo’ which was installed in Óptica Chantal, this group of students, led by María Antón Ripoll, picked up the €500 prize money. Their work included a tapestry showing aspects of the salt industry. The second prize, worth €350, was picked up by a team led by Pascuel Abel Escorza who decorated the front of Nichi Seijo as well as areas inside. Their work was entitled ‘Shine’ and played on reflection and light. The third prize went to the team led by Laura Lizcano and entitled ‘Reality’. This was placed in an Óptica Mar outlet and is an image linked to the Eras de la Sal. This team has won €250. Around 46 students were involved altogether in creating designs inspired by the salt lakes. The students were organised into 15 groups and had four months to put the designs together with the final work being judged by a jury. Suzanne O’Connell

Striking binmen and dirty dogs have left Alicante at the bottom of the list of Spain’s filthiest cities. It is a small deterioration, as Alicante, rated as the second-dirtiest in Spain after Jaen, was rated as third bottom the previous year. The study asked more than 5,620 residents of 60 Spanish cities to rate waste management in seven different factors.

Alicante came out worst in Spain for ‘rubbish left around containers’ and second-worst for ‘animal excrement’. Elche was rated in the top 20 cleanest Spanish cities. Residents there pay €20 more for waste services, at €67 per person per year. Meanwhile Alicante has been hit by strikes over low-pay and deterioration of equipment.

La Mata paseo closed It has been in decline for years and now a 280 metre stretch of walk way on La Mata sea front has finally been cordoned off for safety reasons. The area stretches from avenidas Los Europeos to Holanda and the blame for the state of wooden planks has been placed on the government responsible for the coast. Barriers have been placed at either end of the paseo preventing walkers and cyclists from using the stretch. The town hall is hopeful that the closing of this section of popular promenade will only be temporary and that it will be open again for the busy summer season. The move was triggered by the collapse last Wednesday of a section of the iron railing that acts as a boundary. Now, to prevent further damage or even injury, the whole of this wooden walkway is closed. It was only announced last week that there would be no blue flag this year for La Mata-Sur beach due to the state of the walk way and its railings.

The technicians who have inspected the damaged area have come to the conclusion that it is no longer a matter of patching it up. The wooden surface has reached the end of its life and must be replaced. However, this will require a significant financial investment. The pathway was first installed in 1999 to run parallel to the beach and since then it has been a popular walk along the sea front between Torrevieja and La Mata. It was built by the Ministry of the Environment and remains the responsibility of the ‘Costas del Estado’ which presides over all the coastal regions of the country. Although parts of the walkway have been replaced following the storms in 2016 and 2017, the work has not continued into this section. Now some urgent action is needed if tourists and residents alike are to enjoy the sea views over the summer. Suzanne O’Connell

PRIZES FOR TAPAS ROUTE The tapas route events are some of the most popular activities that form part of Torrevieja’s annual calendar of gastronomic occasions. The most recent, NosVamos de Tapas, was the fourth of its kind and on Monday 13th May the winners were announced. Each route includes an opportunity for the people sampling tapas to vote on their favourite ones. Not only does this mean that restaurants are rewarded for coming up with unusual and tasty ideas but the people who are voting

have chance to be selected as part of a raffle. The prizes are also usually worth winning. The title of best traditional tapas was awarded to La Encina restaurant for their tapas of Carrillera caramelizada sobre muselina and ratatouille. The prize for the best signature tapas went to El Pescador restaurant for their Alcachofas rellenas de langostinos and verduras. There was also a raffle for the participating restaurants for a prize of €100 in cash to be spent at Dialsur that was won

by La Casona Restaurant. Robert Clitheroe was the first prize winner for the public and he won an evening’s dinner menu for two at the winning restaurant. The second prize winner was Ann-Krintín Bton Strand, again winning a meal for two in a restaurant. The third prize winner was Hans Michael Schlosser who won a meal to the value of €50 along with some wine. The fourth raffle prize was won by MerjaEerola who won a dinner menu again to the value of €50. Suzanne O’Connell

Man arrested for murder in TorrePacheco Man arrested on suspicion murder on Costa Blanca after his wife found ‘suffocated’ as he fled to Alicante airport. The suspect is thought to have killed the 42-year-old woman who was found in her bed, naked and with a rose on her chest. The events happened last Thursday night, before the man bought a plane ticket to his and his wife’s native Ecuador. Guardia Civil officers who attended the house in Torre-Pacheco believed the woman had been suffocated, but an autopsy has not yet been carried out. The woman’s friends notified police after she did not come into work, but there were no indications prior to her death that she was at risk from gender violence. She had, however, denounced her husband in 2009 for an assault, and subsequently received a restraining order that expired in October 2010. The suspected killer is now in custody, while residents in Murcia have now held a minute’s silence for his wife. If confirmed as a case of gender violence, it would be the first in Murcia this year, and the 20th across Spain.

What Vox has to say... The online news website ‘Información’ has been providing opportunity for the different political party candidates to ‘chat’. They are now publishing the responses they have given to questions posed to them by members of the public. One of the most recent ‘chats’ was with Carolina Vigara, the Vox candidate for Torrevieja. This far right party represents a number of political views that might have implications for foreigners living in the town if they were to be elected. It is also the case that although they have clearly stated that they will on no account form a coalition with any party considered to be on the left, they would do so with other parties on the right. This might include Ciudadanos and the PP. On 14th May Carolina responded to a total of 45 questions. As with most candidates, she was only able to give vague replies to questions concerning the cleanliness of the town, closed facilities, the local police force and what Vox as a party might do. However, in a couple of responses there were clear indications of what might be expected if Vox were to have political power. Question: Mrs Vigara will we continue to bow down to foreigners who ‘only’ live 5 months and 29 days here although they receive hospital attention and don’t even know how to say ‘thank you’? Can we force them to learn

the language and to integrate, financially as well? If they are European Union Citizens then they are protected by the law, just as nationals are. If they are not European Union Citizens then they must go to private health centres. As for speaking the language, I understand what you mean and any foreign citizen should be required to learn it and integrate if they are residents. Question: Will you eliminate the local law that circuses with animals aren’t allowed? Will Vox encourage bullfighting shows to be held again in the town? This local law would need to be discussed in the council meetings and then it would depend on a majority vote. As for bullfighting, I say again, Vox will always support the traditional Spanish festivities. Carolina Vigara is currently an estate agent, and a question that was raised several times was the fact that the second on the list of Vox candidates is actually Carolina’s husband. A listing that has attracted accusations of nepotism. It was also pointed out that although Vox has come out strongly against corruption, they have indicated that they are prepared to form alliances with a party that has been closely linked with such practices. Seagate Wealth Management

Decade of rate misery S

avers who stashed their money with major banks have lost as much as a fifth of it in real terms over the past decade, and they have been hit extra hard because big banks pay much less interest than other providers. Money Mail research shows low interest rates and the rise in the cost of living since the 2008 financial crash have reduced the value of each £10,000 to £8,000. It is nearly a decade since rates plummeted to their then‐historic 0.5 per cent low, as the Bank of England grappled with the immediate fall‐out of the financial crisis. Savers see the spending power of their money fall if the interest they earn is less than the inflation rate. HSBC has paid 0.05 pc on its Flexible Saver over most of the past ten years, giving £60 interest on £10,000, assuming you added the interest to your account each year ‐ a total of £10,060. But once inflation has taken its toll, the figure drops to £7,980 in today’s money ‐ a drop of just over 20 per cent. If this story sounds familiar, then help is at hand. Here at Seagate, we have a range of flexible, cost effective savings schemes from some of the worlds’ leading product providers, such as Prudential and Old Mutual. The products offered by these companies allow you to achieve the growth you want, but just as importantly are fully tax compliant here in Spain. More and more people are looking for alternative ways to save, especially with banks offering such low interest rates. Seagate can tailor make the savings solution that works best for you and the lifestyle you deserve.

Home & Garden

Embracing nature in your garden Want to support wildlife in your Garden? Here’s some top wildlife-friendly tips to help give nature a home in your garden.

1. Plant pollen and nectar rich plants with a long flowering season like Salvia nemorosa Caradonna. Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ and Echinacea purpurea. 2. Replace some of your lawn with wildflower seed or turf. This is a great way to reduce your mowing maintenance and will create a different habitat in your garden that will attract a range of insects. 3. Introducing water in the garden, like a sunken water bowl or a small pond, will open up a whole new environment for wildlife. Adding a range of marginal plants in and around the pond will not only attract insects but will provide cover for birds, mammals and amphibians. 4. Log piles are a really simple way to attract a whole host of insects and other invertebrates as well as moss and fungi. 5. A mix of hedging along garden

boundaries would offer a wonderful habitat for birds, offering them cover, roosting sites and places to nest. Mixed wildlife hedging has become popular featuring hawthorn, blackthorn, dog rose and bird cherry but equally useful are our traditional hedging plants like yew, beech and hornbeam. For something more unusual try the evergreen escallonias; their nectar-rich flowers will attract a range of pollinators including hoverflies, solitary bees, bumblebees, butterflies and moths. 6. Another option for your lawn is to leave areas to grow long. Long grass will offer shelter and a place for insects to thrive that in turn will provide food for birds and other wildlife. 7. If you have space for a tree and want to attract more birds into your garden then go for one that will provide food and attract insects. Birch, holly, rowan, hawthorn and crab apple will all support a diverse range of insects and fruits/berries in the autumn. 8. Adding bird feeders, nesting boxes, bee houses and insect hotels is another easy way to attract a range of wildlife to your garden. For bird nesting boxes, face between north and east to avoid strong sunlight and the wettest winds. For bee houses, position facing south in a sunny position to keep bees warm in the winter months and place near your bee-friendly flowers and shrubs. For insect hotels bear in mind that you will attract different residents depending on where you place your hotel. Some will prefer cool, damp conditions and others like solitary bees will prefer the sunny spots.

9. If you don’t already have a garden compost it is a must have in the wildlife garden. Not only are you doing your own little bit of recycling you will be creating a unique habitat for a whole range of invertebrates (including slugs, snails, earthworms, millipedes, springtails, some beetles) that play a vital role in breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil. These decomposers in turn will provide a food source for hedgehogs and other wildlife when your compost is ready to spread on your borders. 10. Leave the big garden tidy up till early spring to safeguard overwintering beneficial insects that will be hibernating on dried leaves and stems.

Election debates on TV

Información TV broadcasted a debate to allow the candidates in local elections in Torrevieja to share their manifestos whilst also questioning and challenging one another. Each of the candidates for mayor had one minute in which to introduce themselves and their party and make a brief case before passing on. Following this, different topical subjects were raised and candidates asked for their opinions. Taking part were José Manuel Dolón (Los Verdes-Compromiso Municipal), Eduardo Dolón (PP), Pablo Samper (SueñaTorrevieja), Pilar Gómez Magán (Ciudadanos), Susana Fernández (IzquierdaUnida-Unidas en Confluencia) and Carolina Vigara (Vox). The topics of conversation are familiar to those reading this paper. The town’s general plan, the theatre closure, the town’s waste collection service, health service and bus service. During the

debate the current mayor, José Manuel Dolón defended the decisions and actions taken by the coalition government that has presided over the town hall for the past four years. The general plan for the town is completely out of date and has been patched up for many years. Candidates were in general agreement that a new plan is needed. Debate continued around the subject of the lack of hotels in the town and the town’s approach to tourism. There was criticism of the plans to build houses rather than hotels in areas such as La Hoya. However, it was pointed out that some of these plans were laid during the jurisdiction of previous governments and could not be overturned. All the parties agreed that they want the theatre to open but how to go about this was the subject of debate. The signature of the architect responsible for

the theatre is needed for it to re-open. Although this was disputed by the PP who claim that it can open with existing licences. Other parties variously indicated that either there should be negotiation with the architect or he should be denounced. There was even an argument to say that the PP shouldn’t have built it in the first place. The management of Torrevieja hospital is currently a public/ private model and the concession ends in 2021. Los Verdes, Sueña and Izquierda Unida would like to see the hospital brought back under public control. A move that is discounted by the right wing parties. However, they did agree that Ribera Salud should pay the staff over the summer. One area that the parties all agreed on was that of the bus service. It was accepted that this could no longer

continue as a free service to registered residents although there should still be concessions for pensioners and young people. The town’s cleaning service was discussed with the PP accusing the current government of wasting two years trying to bring it back under town hall control. However, José Manuel Dolón pointed out that it was the constant voting block operated by the PP and Ciudadanos that prevented any progress being made with the reallocation of this service. The parties were in agreement that elections are no longer a two-party affair. The dominance of the PP and PSOE is in the past. So who did the parties say they would sign up with? Carolina Vigara (Vox) rules out any allegiance with the left. Susana Fernandez (Izquierda) has discarded the

idea of supporting the three right-wing parties (Cs, Vox and PP) and PSOE indicated that they would be open to the parties of the left and possiblyCiudadanos too. Ciudadanos for their part indicated that they would not form a pact with Vox but neither with a party who wants to impose valenciano. All those debating were quick to see the town’s problems but what is less clear is how they will work together to implement any solutions. What the town really needs are candidates prepared to put aside political ambition to ensure that decisions can be made and acted upon in the best interests of the town’s people. The debate, Debate electoral Torrevieja, can be watched on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3 VSZ8ae0D Suzanne O’Connell

Welcome to Palma

With Ryanair offering return flights from the new Murcia International Airport to Palma de Mallorca for as little as €40 return*, now is a great time to explore this beautiful Mediterranean island. Mallorca has recently reinvented itself with an emphasis on more upmarket tourism with visitors encouraged to explore the island’s beautiful coastline and interior. The east coast of Mallorca consists of more than fifty secluded coves of enormous beauty. Cala Millor or Cala Bona are ideal bases from which to discover this region. Palma de Mallorca: In their haste to get to their holiday

accommodation and to stay there so many visitors never find time to visit the capital of Mallorca which is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities. Some of the highlights of the city include the La Seu Cathedral which took almost 400 years to build, the Royal Palace of La Almudaina and the circular Bellver Castle which overlooks the Bay of Palma. Time permitting it’s well worth taking a full-day vintage train journey from Palma to Soller. Serra de Tramuntana: This the mountain range runs parallel with Mallorca’s north-west coast. You will need to book quickly though as the chance to experience not only a new and exciting Bodega but a beer brewery as well is proving a huge hit with locals and holidaymakers alike and at just 25e it’s no wonder. To book you place and arrange pick up call Begona on 622 188 772. Organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo, the this tour is the perfect way to discover the wider region as well as sampling the delights of one of the most prestigious bodegas and breweries in the area. Begona has been hosting trips and tours for several years and has helped hundreds of people to enjoy a taste of the ‘real Spain’. Begona said: “Our trips to bodega Casa de la Ermita in Jumilla, offer something for everyone, whether they like wine or beer...or both. This is a great ‘date day’ for couples or groups of friends alike and an opportunity to explore Spanish traditions and culture.” This wine of this bodega has an excellent reputation and is very popular. Casa de la Ermita’s vineyards are farmed under the supervision experts to obtain the best grapes in the Jumilla region. While Monastrell is the most popular variety in the area, Casa de la Ermita has succeeded in adapting to other varieties from different parts of the world, such as Petit Verdot, Merlot, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon.

The tour begins with your pick up from one of the local meeting points and travel to the Bodega, stopping for breakfast on the way, which is included in the price. Once in Jumilla the group will be given a guided tour of the old quarter of the city. The tour will be given in English by a local guide, who will point out the hidden gems, as well as all of the heritage and cultural landmarks. On arrival at Casa de la Ermita you will visit the on-site wine museum which tells the story of wine making from a centuries old farming tradition and its evolution into a state-of-the-art science and from there the tour will continue into the brewery which makes artesian beers. Although not as old as the wine making, Casa de la Ermita takes its beer brewing just as seriously and as passionately, both of which can be tasted in the quality of it beers. The tours will be followed by a three-course-lunch of traditional local and regional dishes and, of course, a chance to taste the wines of the Bodega before ending the day at the Casa de la Ermita shop, where you can purchase the delights on offer. Due to the interest generated by her trips, Begona has created an email group to keep everyone informed on new dates, tour information such as pick-up locations, travel times and also on longer trips organised as part of her ‘Discover the Real Spain’ programme. Bookings for tours can also be made online through this group. If you would like to be added, please send your email address to: viajesrealspain@gmail.com

Spanish police find Irish Your voting options on 26th May woman missing in Madrid Spanish police have located a young Irish woman who went missing along with her twin sister on 9th May in the Madrid neighbourhood of La Latina. Martha Osaro, 26, was found in good health, according to a Twitter message posted by the missing persons support group SOS Desaparecidos. Martha’s twin sister Mary was found a day earlier, also unharmed, but according to a video posted on Facebook by their older sister Jennifer, she was “very traumatised.” The family has declined to share more details about where or how Mary was located. The twins were last seen together on Thursday, 9th May, when they went out at night to celebrate their birthday in La Latina. Their older sister Jennifer decided to report them as missing on Saturday at 1pm at a police station in the Madrid neighbourhood of Tetuán. Police officers opened an investigation to locate the women.

Mary later appeared unharmed, according to sources from the Spanish police. She was located in a hospital, but no further details are known. In a video shared on Facebook, Jennifer explains, “I cannot disclose the information of how I found her or where I found her, I can tell you now from the feedback I got from where I found her, she was very traumatised.” In the video, which briefly shows an image of Mary, Jennifer adds, “I can’t trust anyone [...] It seems that some people are holding information about where Martha Joan Osaro is and they don’t want to communicate that information to me.” Spanish police worked with the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) on the investigation to find the twin sisters. Police shared photos of the women on the website of the missing persons association SOS Desaparecidos and on social media.

SPAIN TO RE-OPEN MANCHESTER CONSULATE OVER BREXIT Spain will re-open a consulate in Manchester it had closed during the financial crisis, its third in Britain, to help Spaniards deal with Brexit, the government said recently. “Faced with an imminent Brexit, we consider it necessary to reinforce our consular presence in Great Britain to provide legal security to Spaniards and assist them in any procedures or information they may need,”spokeswoman

Isabel Celaa told reporters. She said that entailed re-opening the consulate in Manchester, which Madrid had closed in 2011 due to the financial crisis, leaving just two, one in London and the other in Edinburgh. Some 150,000 Spaniards live in Britain, many of whom emigrated during the crisis that erupted in 2008. Celaa did not detail when the consulate would open.

As the date for the local elections is drawing closer, the eight parties contesting power in Torrevieja’s town hall have presented their lists of candidates.

T

he parties include: PP (right wing), PSOE (left wing), Los Verdes (The Green Party), Sueña Torrevieja, Ciudadanos (right wing), Izquierda Unida-Unidas Podemos (far left), Vox (far right) and Contigo Somos Democracia. It is well known and understood that none of these parties will have a clear majority that enables them to take control of local government on their own. The only way that a government can be formed is through coalition. The elections of 2015 came as a great shake up of voting history in the town. The PP prior to this, had had a clear majority in the town hall for almost 30 years. With only eleven councillors they were edged out of government by the remaining parties agreeing to work together. Looking at the results of the general election recently, the PP would be happy to get 11 councillors on 26th May. Whereas they were once the only right wing party available to vote for, they have since been joined by Ciudadanos and, more recently, the far right party of Vox. Now they are hoping that their candidate for mayor, Eduardo Dolón, will be able to fight off the competition as well as the opposition. Andrés Navarro is the candidate for mayor put forward by the PSOE party. The

PSOE did well in the general elections and if the results of that were mirrored in the local elections they could find themselves with seven councillors instead of their current total of four. However, this does not represent a majority – 13 councillors would be needed to take outright control. José Manuel Dolón continues to head the list for Los Verdes along with the councillors who have been part of the

Hurtado. If Ciudadanos were to mirror the general election voting trend in the town elections, they would come in with four councillors. Izquierda Unida presents Susana Fernández as their candidate for mayor and Antonio Padilla for Somos Somos Democracia. The great unknown in this election is that of Vox. Carolina Vigara is first in their list followed by Juan Carlos Ramos. This far

ANDRES NABARRO

current team: José Hurtado, Carmen Morate and Manuela Osuna. José Manuel Dolón has managed to continue as mayor in the town for the past four years, heading the coalition government against the odds. Sueña Torrevieja were a break away group from PSOE and their two top candidates are Pablo Samper and Alejandro Blanco. Both of them were originally contained within the coalition government of 2015 but then broke away to continue in opposition. The Ciudadanos party is lead by Pilar Gómez Magán and is followed by Carlos

right group has been working the streets and social media in the run up to this election and did well in the general election. If the results of this were to be repeated they could be influential in bringing in a coalition government but this time on the right. There is still time for each party to make their case. Voters should familiarise themselves with the intentions of the different parties. They should also be aware of who the party they select may opt for in coalition, as this will be a vote for them too. Suzanne O’Connell

'Clocking in' now compulsory to curb unpaid overtime Companies across Spain – without exception – are now required to have all their workers check in and out daily so as to keep a record of the exact hours they put in, and they could be fined up to €6,250 if they fail to do so. A move brought in by minister for work and pensions Magdalena Valerio in conjunction with Spain's two largest unions, the Labourers' Commissions (CCOO) and General Workers' Union (UGT), the idea is not to 'police' staff who arrive a few minutes late, but to end the longrunning culture of unpaid extra hours. It is estimated that in Spain, staff work 5.6 million hours in overtime every week, but that 2.9 million of these hours are unpaid. These non-remunerated extra working hours mean employers save themselves salaries worth 100,000 jobs – so, even though paid overtime is often welcome, especially if it is voluntary, 'free' additional hours are contributing to unemployment levels in Spain. The law came in on Sunday, 12th May but, except for restaurant, bar and hotel workers, would have had little impact in the first 24 hours – the real changes would not make themselves felt until yesterday, the first week after the legislation entered into force. This new legislation is said to be 'without prejudice to' Article 34 of the Workers' Statute, which allows for flexibility – a factor that is to be encouraged in Spanish firms, given unions' and the government's ongoing campaigns to improve work-life balance and to ensure adequate rest and time available for family duties. A daily working hours register is to be set up and organised 'via collective negotiation' – between companies and

staff, their unions or staff committee representatives – or, in the absence of this, by the company 'subject to prior consultation' with workers legal representatives or workers themselves. The aim of this is for the exercise and its operation to be agreed upon by all sides, not merely imposed. Whilst secretary of union policy for the UGT, Gonzalo Pino, believes the move 'falls short' of what is needed and could be 'very difficult to apply', he considers it 'necessary' in order to 'restore common sense to labour relations in Spain, a European Union country'. The UGT says the effects on employees themselves will only be positive, since they will be aware, and able to prove, the number of hours they work, which will 'avoid overtime fraud' as well as companies taking staff on full-time but only giving them part-time contracts, with the rest of their wages made up in cash in hand, in a bid to save themselves Social Security contributions and income tax paid on staff's behalf. It will also help in dispute resolution, the

UGT says. Records must be kept for a minimum of four years, which is standard for data protection in Spain and is the typical period for which debts accrued can be reclaimed before they expire under the statute of limitations. All legal representatives of workers, the workers themselves, work inspections and the Social Security office will have the right to inspect the registers.

Fines Fines are set by the Law of Social Order Offences and Penalties (LISOS), and range from €626 for minor faults up to €6,250 for major or repeat incidences. Each fine applies per company, not per staff member, but the scale of fines levied means they can be adapted according to how many employees are involved in a company's failure to comply with the law. Whilst the requirements are already in place and, in theory, fines could have been levied from opening yesterday, in practice there will be an undefined

period of grace to allow companies to set up the register – even though Sra Valerio says firms were formally advised via the State Official Bulletin (BOE) on March 12, meaning they have 'already had two months to set up their systems' and work inspectors have already been given instructions to make impromptu visits and examine registers. This said, work inspectors have been requested to act 'reasonably and logically' and to 'use their common sense' and to 'advise, consult, assist and resolve' before issuing fines. How registers are compiled is open to conjecture: whilst the UGT fears lessthan-scrupulous employers may well doctor records, or have staff sign incorrect or blank ones under coercion, especially if these are handwritten rather than digital, Sra Valerio says the work inspectors will be responsible for deciding whether the registers are a faithful reflection of actual hours worked. Experts in employment law believe some hurdles could crop up for companies who operate 'with certain flexibility of hours' rather than 'rigidly adhering to a policy of presenteeism', and that small and medium-sized businesses could be the ones who struggle most to comply. Gonzalo Pino dismissed these concerns, saying 'firms will just have to adapt to modern times'. Other doubts have cropped up about those companies whose workers start or finish their day at home or who work entirely from home, or for jobs where some days may end or begin in other premises such as hotels or restaurants – like working breakfasts or business

dinners – or where staff members' commute is also considered 'work', such as travelling salespersons or account managers who may be a long way from home when their official duties are complete.

A typical hours These employment law experts also question whether the legislation is helpful for firms who pay their staff according to what they do, rather than how long they spend doing it – in these cases, the working day may often involve atypical hours, ranging from one or two a day at the most through to 12 or more, depending upon deadlines and projects, and these hours and their structure may be self-imposed according to the individual employee's personal choice based upon knowledge of their own productivity. For non-presential work, where staff may not necessarily be on the business premises the whole time they are attending to their jobs, tools such as GPS tagging and biometric data – fingerprints, facial or even eyeball recognition – have been proposed, but companies and unions alike consider these may be intrusive to the employee and may be in breach of the Data Protection Law. It remains to be seen which methods are agreed between firms and their staff and whether employees who do not need to be on the premises or stick to a given timetable are able to record their hours worked as easily as more straightforward cases, such as those employed in shops, bars or 100% deskbased office work.

Not achieved my potential

Looking at my own marriage

I wanted to get my A Levels and have a proper career but my parents insisted I go out to work. Now that I am 40 I find that I resent them for not allowing me to better myself. They knew I had dreams. It was the same for my brother too. It’s too late for me now at aged 40 to do anything like re-training, I have a wife and family to support.

A close friend spit from her husband about a year ago. I knew she hadn’t been happy in a long while and her experience has made me examine my own life with my husband. I know my husband won’t be inclined to talk about our problems, he is so closed, and I don’t think he will want to make the effort for us to improve our relationship either.

A lot of people do retrain at 40, but it can be difficult if you have financial responsibilities as most of us do. You may feel a lack of achievement in your life generally, and one solution would be to pursue hobbies now rather than a career. Think of all the things you would have like to have done, and see if you can take lessons, volunteer, or join a group. For instance, if you’d always had a hankering for joining the Police, you could maybe join the Specials. If you’d always wanted to play an instrument, buy one and learn. There is a lot of fulfilment to be gained from hobbies.

Relationships can get stuck in a rut, especially after couples have been together for a long time. It’s likely your husband has noticed this too. You may need to be the one who brings it up if you want anything to change and if your husband is reluctant to talk. Broaching any difficult subject is always the hardest hurdle. You may find that tempers will flare at first, but at least you’ve got it out in the air. Saying nothing will achieve nothing, so have that talk. You can use your friends experience as an example and say you don’t want to end up the same way.

FIVE THINGS EVERY FIRST TIME BUYER MUST KNOW.

Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

Buying your first home in Spain can be an overwhelming experience. It will feel like there’s so much to understand, from the process to the paperwork, getting a mortgage andapplying for your N.I.E. number. To make it a little clearer, here are 5 things every first time home buyer in Spain, needs to know: 1. Know what your budget is. Everyone has a limit on how much they can and want to spend on their home in the sun. So, figuring out your budget before you start your search, will not only save you time, but will help you narrow down which properties to look at.Tip: You’ll love homes you can’t afford, so only look at the ones you can! 2. Do you need a mortgage? Mortgages are a lot easier to obtain than they used to be, especially during the last few years. So if you need to apply for a loan, there are a few different options out there right now. Speaking to the bank in Spain is very easy to do, they do speak English so don’t worry about communicating with them. You don’t need to hablaEspañol! They have great deals at the moment, like paying towards the legal fees. If a mortgage is not what you need, but a top up loan would be enough, then the Spanish banks are offering “quick approval” loans up to €60,000. My advice is always to speak directly with the bank and let them offer you their best rate and advice. Amount you can borrow for “Non-Residents” (not residing in Spain,) is usually up to 70% of the purchase price. For “Residents” they lend up to 80%. Tip: These percentages do and can fluctuate from bank to bank, so it is

always best to take advice directly from your chosen entity at the start of your property search. 3. N.I.E. number. This is your Spanish tax number. Every person that is purchasing a property, must have this designated number. This means, if two people are buying a home together, both individuals must have a number each. You will need to have this number to open a Spanish bank account and/or applying for a mortgage. N.I.E. numbers are applied for, through the “Comisaría de Policia” (National Police station) within the provinceof your new home address or through the Spanish Embassy or Consulate. You do not need this N.I.E. number to reserve a property to buy.Tip: Sometimes it’s easier to pay for someone to apply for this number for you, instead of trying to do it yourself. 4. Use a Lawyer. In Spain you can buy a property and complete the paperwork by yourself, however, I think you’ll agree with me when I say, it is definitely not worth the risk! Using a legal Spanish Lawyer may cost you around €1,000 to do the relevant checks on paperwork, legality of the home, debts, etc. (conveyancing). And, they too will speak English! Tip: Make sure they are a Lawyer and not just an accountant or administrator. The Spanish word for Lawyer is “Abogado/a.” “Asesoria” is an accountant. “Gestoria” is an administrator. 5. The Notary. In Spain when signing on the dotted line to complete your purchase, you have to go to a Notary’s office to sign your new Title Deeds. The Notary is aGovernment official and is completely independent. They don’t work for the vendor, and neither do they work for the buyer. They are the ones that make your purchase legally binding and official.Tip: The Notary is a highly educated person. They don’t expect you to turn up to their office in beachwear. Formal casual will be expected and appreciated. From reservation to completion, purchasing a property can be very quick. The fastest completion I’ve ever experienced, was in two days! They don’t say speedy Gonzalez for nothing! ¡Que viva España! Property sales break half- Renting in Spain? million barrier for first time Five clauses you should since financial crisis be mindful of For the first time since before the financial crisis, annual house sales in Spain have broken the halfa-million barrier, say the latest figures, with a 10.1% hike in residential property changing hands in 2018. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), a total of 515,051 homes were sold in 2018 – a factor attributed to a combination of economic growth, financial strength, improvements in the job market, and residential property being much cheaper now than just before the ‘bubble’ burst in 2008. INE data show that last year saw the market beginning to plateau, with the most moderate rise in purchase growth since 2014 – a year when the number of transactions only rose by 2 percent, compared with 11.5 percent the following year, 14% in 2016, and 15.4 percent in 2017. But sales numbers at the end of last year were their highest in a decade, and both new builds and second-hand homes were behind the annual growth, according to the INE. This fifth year of increases in home sales numbers is in stark contrast to the worst years of the financial crisis – 2008 and 2009, when property purchases plunged by 25.1% and 28.8 percent respectively. In 2011 and 2012, sales were still falling in double-figure percentages, at 18.1 percent and 11.5 percent, and an end to tax breaks on buying main residences saw a reduction of 1.9 percent in 2013. But from then on, growth has been consistent – in 2018, a total of 422,531 second-hand homes and 92,520 new builds were sold, the first being

the highest number since 2007 and the second being the highest since 2014. The greatest number of property sales in 2018 per 100,000 inhabitants was in the eastern region of the Comunidad Valenciana – the three provinces of Valencia, Alicante and Castellón on the Mediterranean coast – with 2,010 homes per 100,000 residents shifted.

This means one of Spain’s most populous and popular regions was streets ahead of the rest of the country, given that the second-highest number of transactions per 100,000 residents, in the Balearic Islands, was 1,641. Andalucía was third with 1,537 sales per 100,000. In terms of overall numbers, Andalucía accounted for the most properties sold – 101,330 – followed by Catalunya, with 81,020, the Comunidad Valenciana with 78,800 and Madrid with 75,845.

Spain is such a great place to live and work in. You are young, carefree, and have yielded to the temptation to move to this beautiful country for a while to test the waters. You are now on the brink of signing a lease agreement with your landlord (worded only in Spanish!) and you begin to feel a familiar knot at the pit of your stomach. You'd better do yourself a favour and read carefully through the points below to avoid those pesky clauses in long term lets that will bring you (the tenant) so much aggravation. 1. Clause stating all household appliances are in perfect working order. Really? Have you actually bothered to turn on the kitchen appliances, open the faucets, switch on the lights and verify they all work? No? Well you’re heading for trouble. Because when you sign on the dotted line you actually acknowledge that everything is in good working order, meaning a legal presumption is created that in the event something breaks down you – the tenant – are at fault and are liable to pay for its repair or replacement. 2. In the event of a sale, the tenant must leave with one-months’ notice. Well, I’m afraid not after the new change in rental laws in 2019. Any buyer of the property you are renting must respect the whole duration of the lease agreement until it ends. You cannot be legally compelled to leave ahead of the termination of your contract. 3. The landlord reserves the right to enter the rented property at will, giving a one-day notice for ‘inspection purposes.’ Unless a tenant expressly agrees to this in writing, a landlord cannot enter a leased property at any time. On letting a property, a landlord loses possession of the property. Should the landlord attempt to enter a rented property without

a tenant’s permission, they can be criminally prosecuted for illegal trespassing. 4. The duration of the lease agreement is 11 months. If the property serves as your main abode in Spain, and it is not a holiday letting, this clause is null and void. Long term lets in Spain are for a minimum

duration of 5 years (7 years, if the landlord is a legal entity). They are 12-month renewable contracts. And don’t get us started on ‘silent renewals’ which pile another three years onto the overall duration of long term contracts. 5. The security deposit is equivalent to three months rental. We don’t think so. In Spain, a landlord may only request, by law, a one-month deposit on long-term lets (this rule applies all over Spain, no exceptions). In addition to this, a landlord may request additional guarantees (i.e. more money) but they not legally labelled as a security deposit (fianza, in Spanish). Watch out, because some landlords are notorious for pocketing tenant’s deposits when the contract ends. They will never refund them, giving all sorts of lame excuses.

Bingeworthy Box Sets Lucifer Lucifer is the story of the original fallen

Sex Education Socially awkward high school student Otis may not have much experience in the lovemaking

angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar has resigned his throne and retired to the City of Angels, where he owns an upscale piano bar called Lux. Lucifer is enjoying his retirement and indulging in a few of his favorite things -- wine, women, song -when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux. For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him. He's not sure whether it's his suppressed desire to punish the wicked or something deeper and more confusing -- is he actually capable of feelings for a human being? The very thought disturbs him -- as well as his best friend and confidante, Mazikeen (aka Maze), a fierce demon in the form of beautiful young woman. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Dancer, who finds herself both repulsed and fascinated by Lucifer. As they work together to solve the pop star's murder, Lucifer is struck by Chloe's inherent goodness. Used to dealing with the absolute worst of humanity, he begins to wonder if there's hope yet. At the same time, God's emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to Hell. But with the City of Angels at his feet and a newfound purpose, Lucifer's having too much fun to go back now. Sexy, dark and irreverent, this one-hour drama from Jerry Bruckheimer Television, based on the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment's Vertigo imprint, offers up the concept that everyone might have a chance at redemption ... even the Devil.

department, but he gets good guidance on the topic in his personal sex ed course -- living with mom Jean, who is a sex therapist. Being surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis has become a reluctant expert on the subject. When his classmates learn about his home life, Otis decides to use his insider knowledge to improve his status at school, so he teams with whip-smart bad girl Maeve to set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their classmates' problems. But through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realizes that he may need some therapy of his own. Sex Education is a British comedy-drama web television series, created by Laurie Nunn, that premiered in January 2019, on Netflix. The series stars Gillian Anderson, Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, and Kedar Williams-Stirling. In February 2019, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season.

DRINKING COFFEE LINKED TO LIVING LONGER STUDY FINDS For those of you whose morning isn’t complete without a cup of coffee (or two or three), I have some good news from you: There’s another study in your corner showing the habit could be good for your health. Association of Coffee Drinking With Mortality by Genetic Variation in Caffeine Metabolism, published last year in the Journal of the American Medical

Association (JAMA), “provides further evidence that coffee drinking can be part of a healthy diet and offers reassurance to coffee drinkers” - especially in regards to mortality. Researchers looked at more than 500,000 people between the ages of 38 and 73 in the U.K., 380,000 of whom were coffee drinkers. Their objective was to study the links

between drinking coffee and mortality based on how well your body can absorb caffeine. The results will surprise even the heaviest of coffee drinkers: They found that coffee was inversely related to mortality among people who drank 1 to 8 or more cups of coffee a day, even for those whose bodies were slower to absorb caffeine. This includes ground,

instant, and decaf. coffee, interestingly enough. In other good-for-Starbucks-lovers news, coffee might be good for your skin. Another study published in JAMA last December found that participants who drank 4 cups of coffee per day were less likely to develop rosacea compared with participants who did not drink coffee.

Megan Barton Hanson

Megan Barton Hanson reveals she battled suicidal thoughts before her Love Island stint and didn’t wanna be here anymore. She has always been candid about her mental health struggles. Now, Megan Barton Hanson has admitted that she was suicidal at her lowest point two years ago, before finding fame on the hit ITV2 show. Megan further opened up about how she has managed her mental health issues since being in the spotlight as she pledged her support for the Where’s Your Head At? Workplace Manifesto. She told heatworld of her low point

two years ago: ‘I just felt like I wanted to give up, like there wasn’t any positive times, there wasn’t any sad times, I just felt a whole cloud over me of just like numbness and nothingness ... I remember crying to my mum and saying basically “I really am not happy, I don’t wanna be here anymore”. She said: ‘I thought there was no way I could get better - but there always is, and I did get better ... for me, therapy, meditation and yoga really help.’ Discussing how she adjusted to life in the limelight after finding fame overnight on Love Island, Megan admitted that reading comments about her online made things difficult. She told the publication: ‘When I first came out the villa it was so difficult. I was on such a high but then I read some comments on a news article about me they were absolutely awful.’ The former stripper admitted that initially she found it difficult to speak out about her mental health, but reiterated the importance of those with a platform to use theirs to raise awareness.

We’ve got your back Millie To ‘have someone’s back’ means to have their best interests at heart, but in the case of Millie Anya Grundy, the recent campaign to help raise funds for a vital spine operation also took on a literal meaning when the community as a whole got together to support the teen. Millie’s diagnosis took place in early summer 2015. Her mother Emma recalled, “Millie had a tooth infection and the paediatrician had to weigh her to prescribe the correct amount of antibiotics. It was then that she noticed Millie’s shoulder blades were uneven - at the time we couldn’t even see it but were happy for Millie to be sent for tests to be sure. The diagnosis itself was a shock.” Over time, Millie’s condition worsened and her spine became severely curved – a condition called scoliosis. When it became apparent that the only option for Millie to live a normal life was with surgical intervention, her parents were faced with a difficult decision. The required procedure, the Harrington Fusion, would have been available on the public health system but the manner in which the surgery would be carried out would be much more invasive and Millie would be left with restricted movement. Furthermore, under the public system, the procedure wouldn’t be carried out until she was fully grown which would

have meant more years of intense pain ahead of her. Emma explained, “I looked into every possible avenue and researched the VBT operation. With this option, Millie would still be able to dance and live a normal life. Already her condition had progressed further and she was suffering quite badly which meant that she would need more detailed internal surgery.” So, her parents were faced with a tough choice – go the public health route and let Millie suffer pain for years until fully grown, after which an operation could be performed but her movement would always be severely restricted and her life never the same. Or, choose the private health route with the huge costs involved, allowing Millie to have a better operation immediately and return to live a normal life, pain free. Emma told us, “Once we knew Millie needed an operation regardless, I looked into every option available. With the public health option, she would have to be braced 23 hours a day for a number of years, and have the operation when she stopped growing at around 18 years old. This brought Millie to tears on many occasions and it wasn’t something we wanted for her. So, I began researching and discovered an operation that a girl from Britain’s Got Talent had in America

and found a similar procedure could be carried out in Spain privately. I began researching and speaking to people who had the same operation in order to find out more.” Emma and her husband Steve decided that the only real option was to try to fund the private operation for Millie. Emma said, “At first I didn’t want to fundraise. I was willing to sell the house and rent somewhere, or remortgage, even apply for a loan depending on how much we managed to save. It wasn’t until close friends of ours really convinced us to ask for help – basically, they said if we didn’t set up a campaign they would, as people wanted to help Millie.” Nevertheless, the decision to fundraise was a difficult one. Emma said, “It was very hard emotionally. Both Steve and I work very hard to provide for our family and we are proud people. To ask for help was difficult, but our friends convinced us to go for it for Millie’s sake.” Once the decision was made, the hard work began. Emma said, “I have helped people raise money before but never to this scale. It was quite overwhelming. Organising the events just took over our lives but it was worth every minute.” The level of support from the local community was also a big shock for Emma and Steve. Emma said, “It was unbelievable. Almost overnight the word spread, we were overwhelmed – not only by the donations but also the support

from family, friends, local businesses and people in the community wanting to organise events and help our Millie.” Amazingly over €42,000 was raised in a very short space of time – the clock was ticking as Millie needed to have the operation before a certain date because of her rate of growth. The remainder of what was needed was saved by Emma and Steve – Emma explained, “We cut back, saved everything we could and Steve worked seven days per week so we could continue to live and still make payments to the hospital.” Being the centre of a high profile campaign would be difficult for any young teenager to cope with and Millie was no different. Emma explained, “Millie has a few anxiety problems, she is quite a nervous girl. She said she felt shy, especially when people came up to her in supermarkets as they had recognized her. At events she would try and stay out of the way but a few times people called her on stage and she handled it all very well – we were very proud of her, knowing how difficult she would find being in the spotlight.” The operation was carried out in Hospital Corachan , Barcelona in Barcelona in February and the results speak for themselves. Just six weeks after her operation, Millie was back at her dance class and living a normal life. Emma said, “It wasn’t easy – the first two weeks post op were the hardest we have

ever been through. The emotions, the pain management. It was tough on Millie – she didn’t expect to feel as bad as she did, but that is all behind her now and she can look to the future. Given how far her condition had progressed, we never thought her spine could be corrected to such a degree but we are so happy, it is the best result we could have dreamed of.” Of course, with a campaign like this, there are many people to thank – Emma and Steve wanted to thank everyone who donated, held events and supported the campaign. They also wanted to thank: The Coffee shop, Studz, Dean Alexanda, Big FM, Jrs – Yvonne, The Olive Bar, Casa España, Carmen’s, San Miguel Golf Society, Vistabella Golf Club and Bar, Costa Blanca People, EWN, The Club, Just Brass Brass Band, The Welcome Inn – Pete, The Walking Football Club, Venture Fleet, Laurels, Dance extreme reunion, Jake Roscoe Santa Run, Harry’s Bar, Family and friends in the UK, The Property Shop, The Archers, Attitude Band, Essence Dance School, Lucy Spinks, The Christmas Shop, Enchanted Florists, Ds Colors paint shop (and Eddie for a re spray) and La Serena Golf Society. Emma also added, “I really hope I haven’t forgotten anyone – but to everyone involved, from the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU. Our beautiful daughter is now able to live a normal pain free life thanks to the kindness and generosity of the local community and friends in the UK. I’ll never be able to express what this means to our family – thank you.”

raised by the charity pays for. They were also able to view the drawings the children have produced for this year's Christmas Card competition. Three winners will be chosen by the charity volunteers to appear on this year's ECCH charity Christmas cards which will be on sale from September. Recently a donation was given by Torre Golf Society to buy new curtains and fittings for the bedrooms, Dave from Torre Golf

was there on the day to receive a certificate of thanks from the children. Thank your certificates were also presented to Val and Richard Weekes from Eat to Slim, Eileen Gleave and Stevie Spit, Pam from Zest Bar, Pam Edwards (Hondon volunteer group), Margaret and Linda (Pinoso volunteer group), Carolyn Richardson from the Weigh In Ladies, Alicante Studios and Jan Savage.

On the day, Stevie Spit delivered a huge bucket of brown coins which he has been collecting from different venues throughout the year. This money goes towards the children's excursions over the long summer holidays. Bouquets were presented to the committee members, Bobbi, Pat, Michelle, Maggi and Annette. Over 500 euros was raised on the day through a raffle and collections.

ECCH Open Day On Sunday, 12 May the Elche Children's Care Home celebrated their annual Open Day at the Home which everybody always looks forward to as it is not only an opportunity to say thank you to the many supporters, but for them to meet the children and carers in their own environment. The children kicked off the day by entertaining the audience with music and dance. Entertainment was provided

by Simon Morton of Sunshine FM, Stevie Spit and Eileen Gleave who gave a hilarious rendition of The Laughing Policeman. A hog roast was provided by Sean and family from Hogs in the Costa and Bell & Son Family Butcher in La Marina, who generously donated 100 euros of their fee to the charity. Guests were given a tour of the home to see the facilities and what the money

Benefits of going green Vegetarianism has become ever more popular in recent years as more and more people start to cut meat from their diets. Whether it's because they have gone fullon vegan or just make the effort to do meat-free Mondays, people everywhere are beginning to embrace a plant-based diet. Not only has a diet high in vegetables proven to have a myriad of health benefits, but it's also better for the environment and our wallets too. Mood Research has revealed that vegetarians may be happier than their meat-eating counterparts. According to experts vegetarians had lower scores on depression tests and mood profiles when compared to fish and meateaters. There is an element of freshness to most vegetarian dishes, especially when it comes to organic produce – so this is bound to purify our minds and keep our thoughts positive. Fighting Disease When done right, vegetarian diets are naturally low in saturated fats and cholesterol. They can reduce the risk of heart disease and data suggests vegetarians suffer less disease caused by a modern Western diet (e.g., coronary heart disease, hypertension, obesity type 2 diabetes, diet-related cancers, diverticulitis, constipation, and gall stones, among several others). Why? This can be attributed to a higher intake of fibre, phytonutrients, antioxidants, flavonoids, and carotenoids.

Lean Figure A bonus to sticking to a vegetarian diet is the positive effect it has on our figure. Vegetarians typically weigh less as a result of a diet comprised of fewer calories in the form of grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. Vegetarians are also generally more aware of healthy food and tend to eat better. Less Toxicity The vegetarian diet is purer organically and so is lower in toxicity. Food-born illnesses, bacteria, parasites, and chemical toxins are more common in commercial meat, poultry, and seafood when compared with plant foods (particularly organic fruits and vegetables). As a rule, vegetarians also tend to eat less processed food. Sight & Skin As well as keeping the figure desirable, vegetarians tend to have better vision and less

macular degeneration and all that extra collagen leads to better skin – what more could you want? Stay fuller, longer A vegetarian diet is more filling than a typical Western one, as it has a lot more fibre and is very nutrient less. So you eat less and stay full for longer. Better Athletic Performance While most active individuals focus on protein intake, they should instead follow a highcarbohydrate, good-fat, and vitamin and mineral-rich vegetarian diet for optimum sports performance. Conflicting studies exist, but the number of world-class vegetarian sportsmen continues to rise. Lewis Hamilton, for example, has gone vegan while boxer David Haye has embraced the diet recently as well. Longevity Vegetarians have been found to enjoy longer and healthier lives when compared to meat-eaters.

Daily glass of red wine is not good for the heart, actually Family doctors in Spain have debunked the popular myth about how a glass of red wine a day is good for the heart. In fact, there is no minimum safe alcohol level, and any amount of alcohol at all increases the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, GPs stress. The national cancer research and care charity AECC has already stated in the past that every sip of alcohol is an increase in the risk of developing the disease, and now, the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (SemFYC) has reaffirmed this at its recent congress in Málaga. For a long time now, unsubstantiated claims have been doing the rounds about how 30 grams of red wine a day is good for the heart, even helping to reverse the effects in anyone already diagnosed with a heart condition, but the SemFYC says: “There are no reasons for recommending the consumption of any type of alcohol to the population as beneficial for health.” On the contrary, the 'healthy' glass-aday cited by certain media and social

media sources 'demonstrably' ups the risk of high blood pressure, haemorrhagic stroke and auricular fibrillation, Professor Basulto says. He referred to a study published in the medical journal BMC Public Health which found that if a non-smoking woman drinks a bottle of wine a week – six very small or three large glasses in seven days – her risk of developing breast cancer rises by the equivalent of smoking two cigarettes a day. In fact, one in every five types of breast cancer are caused directly by alcohol, the BMC Public Health report claims. “This idea about alcohol being good for heart health is not only questionable and full of confusion, bias and absence of biological mechanisms to support it, but does not consider the carcinogenic potential of alcohol.” Also at the SemFYC, an article by the American Institute for Cancer Research was quoted, stating that 'even small amounts of alcoholic drinks can increase the risk for several types of cancer', and,

'there is no minimum consumption threshold below which the risk of cancer does not increase, at least for certain types of the disease'. Despite this, nine in 10 people questioned were unaware of the increased risk of cancer through drinking red wine in particular, but nine in 10 believed that doing so was good for heart health. And the healthy-heart properties in red wine cited – but not proven – only represent one-tenth of the properties which are harmful to the heart and conducive to cancer risk increase, the American Institute of Cancer Research says. Conerns The SemFYC Congress members also raised concerns about alcohol consumption in minors, pointing out that the 'reality' is that teenagers do drink and always have done, but as their brains are not fully developed, they were causing permanent damage by doing so. Education about alcohol should focus on abstaining altogether, and laws banning sale and¡d consumption to under-18s should be reinforced, doctors stated at the Congress. They said there is no safe level of drinking for anyone under this age. For those who drink a glass of red wine a day to 'benefit' from the flavonoids and antioxidants in it which may increase heart health, the damaging effects of this glass-a-day are ten times that of the 'helpful' ingredients, the SemFYC says. They recommend that to obtain the benefits of the same types of flavonoids and antioxidants, people should eat grapes and wholegrain cereals instead.

Beauty secrets you've never heard but need to know Drink more water, take your make-up off before bed, use SPF—this is all sound advice, but hardly breaking news for beauty junkies. But what if we told you we'd quizzed the pros for some beauty tips you haven't heard before? Seriously, there's still some out there. From how to stop your nails from going yellow to avoiding chapped lips in even the wildest winter conditions, cast your eyes upon these nuggets of valuable advice, according to experts. Redo your nails every three days According to the pedicurist every Alister has on speed dial, base coats stop working after three days. This means that your nails will become vulnerable due to the chemicals in your polish. The results yield weak, at-risk of breakage nails that have a yellowy tinge. Yes, it takes effort but redoing your mani every few days will make your nails

appear healthy, pink and strong. Fake tans love hot air Tanning supremos claim that if you are in a rush, use your hair dryer to speed up your tan's developing process. Since you're activating the DHA faster, you're literally baking yourself bronze. You'll still need to rinse it off, but it means there's none of that overnight stinky-sheets nonsense to deal with, plus you'll achieve the same golden glow in under an hour. Omegas are always the answer If your skin is prone to dryness and feels taught and itchy, the water content of your Stratum Corneum is likely to be pretty low. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and shea butter are big hitters when it comes to skincare. But facialists believe that nothing works better than upping your internal fatty acids. Supplements full of omega oils

are your best bet, and will act like Lucozade on a hangover day to replenish and rehydrate flagging faces. Hand sanitiser stops spots We bet this one got your attention. But first off, let's be clear—this doesn't mean applying the sanitiser on your face. Absolutely not. However, if you find yourself touching your face during the day, especially your chin and cheeks when you're in front of the computer, make sure you regularly apply some to your hands. It will null the bacteria between keyboard and face and prevent it spreading and fermenting on your face. So hopefully, less spots. Wrinkles can be pressed away Massaging your face to boost your circulation hasn't been kept under wraps by the experts, but there’s a high probability you're not doing it right. Leading facialists explain that it has to

be firm so you're that moving the muscles under the skin and not just pushing it around (which can cause damage). They also recommend pressing in the opposite direction of any fine lines or wrinkles. You would never iron a sheet along the crease to remove it, and the same principle applies to your skin. Apply pressure across frown lines and use a zig zag motion under the eye. Potatoes hold the power to bright

eyes Do not take this as your lead to indulge in a whole bag of crisps in the search for smooth eyes. Instead, visit the fruit and veggie aisle and pick up a King Edward potato. Cut it into thin slices and in half so you get a half moon shape, then place them under your lower lashes. (We're not pulling your leg.) Apparently the enzymes released from raw potatoes naturally tighten the skin.

DID YOU KNOW? forwards me, via WhatsApp, quotations, jokes and chain letters, urging me to forward on to my address book! I never do but I am curious as to what is the point of these? Does this make money for someone and does it use up data. Apologies if this is common knowledge as I am not very techno wise. Aunty Says: Hi Lynda. WhatsApp now have upwards of 900 million users which is an immense marketplace for advertisers, and this is where/how we pay. These quotations and jokes that do the rounds are mostly harmless but unfortunately they will use up a small amount of your internet. Anyone knowingly forwarding this kind of junk should be banned from using the Internet for 6 months and made to sit a rehabilitation exam. Mary from Benijofar asks: I’m worried that I don’t have a backup of my computer, and should anything happen I would be lost. I followed your advice in one of your previous articles and I have copied my Pictures and Documents folders onto a USB stick (which I add to every few weeks) but do I also need to have some kind of recovery disk to include my Windows and apps? I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 10. Thanks in advance for your help. Aunty Says: By keeping a separate copy of your personal stuff on a separate device Mary you are doing the most important thing, but you absolutely must remember to unplug the USB stick once you have copied your files.

If you also want to backup your Windows system you can quite easily create a “recovery drive” onto another USB stick by using the built in Recovery app. Click on the Start icon and type RECOVERY and double click on the “Create a Recovery Drive” option. A new window will popup, click on “next” and it will tell you how big a USB stick you will need. Personally I would buy a good brand 32GB USB3, such as Kingston or Sandisk, and use it just for this task.

Keith via email asks: Hi Aunty. When I receive an email or message in Spanish is there any way to convert that message into English on my iPad or iPhone? Aunty Says: Hi Keith. I’m not an Apple user but I use the Google Translate app on my Android phone which works great with Google Gmail and Chrome. I believe there is a similar app called iTranslate in Apple’s App Store which will do a similar job with Apple’s email app and Safari.

While some argue that the most expensive domain name is Cars.com which was valued at $872 million, that claim is a bit deceptive as the sale didn’t just involve the cars.com domain name but an existing business. The LasVegas.com sale involves just the domain name. • As at December 2018, there are approximately 1.94 billion websites in the world.

ITV Questions Answered Two of the most common questions about the ITV test are when it´s needed and where it can be carried out, in particular as there is a belief, for example, that vehicles which reside in the Alicante province can´t have their inspection carried out in Murcia. Today we answer those doubts, and others, but this is not just us saying it, this is the official information provided by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism of the Spanish Government, any they should know best. You can find this information on the FAQ page of their website for confirmation, industria.gob.es. Which vehicles are required to undergo periodic technical inspections? According to article 4.1 of Royal Decree 920/2017, of October 23, which regulates the technical inspection of vehicles: "vehicles registered or that are going to

be registered in Spain, which will be able to circulate on public roads, must submit to a technical inspection in an ITV station in the cases and with the periodicity, requirements and exceptions established in this royal decree". What frequency of periodic inspection corresponds to my vehicle? The frequency of periodic technical inspection is established, in general, depending on the type of vehicle homologation, in accordance with article 6 of Royal Decree 920/2017, of October 23, which regulates the technical inspection of vehicles. Variations are established for certain vehicles such as ambulances, taxis, private hire vehicles, school transport vehicles, hire cars, and certain historical vehicles. Where do I have to take my vehicle for the periodic technical inspection? According to article 17 of Royal Decree 920/2017, of October 23, which regulates

the technical inspection of vehicles, there is freedom to choose the ITV station in the national territory wherever you desire to have the technical inspection of vehicles performed whatever the type of inspection. So you see, this is the most common question, the law clearly states that the inspection can be carried out anywhere in the country, and so if you live in the Alicante province, you are free to travel the short distance to Murcia for your test. It´s the law that states this, and for your convenience, to confirm and dismiss any doubts you have, here is the actual paragraph, so you can either practice your Spanish or quote it to any doubters you come across.

My vehicle has deficiencies detected in the periodic technical inspection, once corrected do I have to return to the same ITV station where the original inspection took place? As is the case of the initial inspection, the tests which the vehicle must undergo to verify the rectification of the deficiencies found can be made at any ITV station in the national territory, as established in article 11 of Royal Decree 920 / 2017, of October 23, by which the technical inspection of vehicles is regulated. Do I have to wait for the exact expiry date before I submit my vehicle to a

new inspection? No, vehicles subject to inspection up to 30 days before the date on which the deadline for re-inspection is met keep the original date and have an extension added to the new term. What are the general periods for the periodic inspection of private cars? The first inspection - 4 years after registration. Up to 10 years old - every 2 years. Over 10 years old - every year. EXCEPTIONS Even if the vehicle has not turned 4 years old, if it has undergone a modification or replacement of elements before or after registration, that varies the characteristics that appear on the ITV card or the defined safety conditions, an inspection of these reforms must be carried out, as well as if a vehicle has suffered noticeable damage in an accident. You can find out the period of inspection for other vehicles on the website, itvsanjavier.com, where you can also book your appointment for your inspecti

Audi A4 facelift

In line with the launch of the latest BMW 3 Series, Audi has given its A4 Saloon, Avant and Allroad models a mid-life update. As well as blink-and-you’ll-missthem styling changes, the A4 has been treated to a range of new mild hybrid enabled engines, a larger MMI touchscreen display and a revamped turbo-diesel S4 performance version. Despite diesel performance cars seemingly having had their day, Audi has swapped the existing S4’s 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol V6 for a turbo-diesel equivalent. Assisted by a 48v subsystem incorporating mild hybrid (MHEV) technology, the S4 TDI is set to produce 342bhp and 516lb ft of torque, giving a 062mph time of 4.8 seconds and an

electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Aside from the colossal increase in torque (up 147lb ft – that’s the same amount as an Up GTI makes on its own), the figures are almost identical to the petrol predecessor. Audi also makes the bold promise of zero turbo lag thanks to an electrical compressor that works off the mild hybrid system. Essentially, it kicks in at low revs (where a large turbo would usually struggle to make an impact) and gets things going almost instantaneously, giving greater engine responses. As ever on Audi performance models, Quattro all-wheel drive is fitted as standard along with an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox.

The S4 isn’t the only A4 model to get mild hybrid technology, either, with 35 TFSI (148bhp), 40 TFSI (187bhp) and 45 TFSI (242bhp) units all getting the upgrade from launch, with 30 and 35 TDI (134bhp and 161bhp) engines coming along a little later. Using a 12v electrical system, each engine will be able to coast at high speeds and switch off entirely at low speeds (below 13.7mph, if you’re interested), saving fuel and CO2. Audi also reckons that the engine can even shut down entirely during low speed manoeuvres such as parking, or reversing out of a garage. We’re not ones to sniff at a larger infotainment display, but in switching the A4 to Audi’s new MMI software the rotary dial controller has been canned. And what a shame that is. Audi and BMW were one of the last beacons of hope for those who found touch-screens inherently fiddly to use while on the move and, with the A4, ditching the intuitive dial controller provides

BMW an advantage BMW in terms of sheer ease of use. Aside from this, clever new features such as traffic light information and myAudi app (allows users to lock/unlock and start the car from their Android phone) are included, while the Virtual Cockpit software has been given a once over to include new graphics and layouts. Evolution not revolution for the A4’s styling Looks are subjective, but there wasn’t much wrong with the looks of the prefacelift A4. Yes, it was a little bland for some tastes, but then what premium

German exec saloon isn’t? With that (maybe) in mind, Audi has made the front end fall more in line with its current design philosophy. The grille is wider and the bonnet features the same louvres as the A1 and R8, while LED headlights now come as standard. The wheel arches are also a little more muscular, while the shoulder line has been moved down a touch. Finally, the rear of the car now sees a consistent horizontal line designed to increase the feeling of width. Prices of the face-lifted A4 are set to stay largely the same, with the European launch taking place in Autumn 2019.

Car drivers should get more options from July From 1 July, 2019, category B (private car) licence holders will be able to drive more vehicles than before, thanks to a change in the law. The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has been working on a number of modifications and improvements to the driving licence system in Spain, including new rates, changes in the system of road training and examinations, and allowing car drivers the opportunity to extend the catalogue of vehicles their licence covers. Although the final drafts are still yet to be released, they were put on hold for the elections; many of these changes are expected to come into force in July when the process restarts shortly. The latest draft included changes to the class B driving licence, which will authorise holders with two-years driving experience to drive vehicles intended for

the transport of goods with a mass between 3,500 and 4,250 kilos . This is an increase from the current designation which ensures the maximum authorised mass (MMA) does not exceed 3,500 kg, which are designed and constructed for the transport of no more than eight passengers, in addition to the driver (nine people in total, at most). It is not the first time that modifications have been introduced to driving laws which extend vehicle options for class B licence holders. Since October 2004, every driver with the B permit can ride a 125cc motorcycle if it does not have a sidecar and if it does not exceed a power of 11 kW. For this, and without further paperwork, the driver must have qualified experience of three years. In addition, the age limits are being reduced for some licences. Depending on

the type of vehicle and its use, the age limit to obtain category C, D, D1, C + E, D + E and D1 + E will be reduced, once the licensee obtains a Certificate of Aptitude Professional (CAP). In addition, those who want to obtain the permits C, C1, D, D1 (trucks and buses) or combined B + E, C + E, C1 + E, D + E or D1 + E (articulated), should be able to benefit from a reduction in the minimum training schedule on the risk factors associated with the type of vehicle that will be examined, so long as they then satisfy the test requirements.

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, I hope you have risen to read this. We should all be standing and applauding, you see. Yes, for Pep Guardiola and his Man City band of not-at-all-expensively-assembled-yetstill-very-merry-men have become to first team in English football history to do the domestic quadruple by winning the FA Cup Final against Watford. Yes, I did say quadruple. The Community Shield does count (when you are scrabbling around for even more reasons to deflect from the fact you failed once again in the Champions League and that FFP investigation going on in the background). Taking Watford apart limb by limb was enough for Vincent Kompany to realise that he had reached his

footballing peak and it was time to call it a day. Manchester City’s most successful captain in modern-day history turned down the offer of a oneyear extension to his contract to announce, brilliantly as it happens, that he is going home to Belgium to become player-manager of his hometown club, Anderlecht. As for Watford, I think we can call 60 a rout. They were only one goal shy of having the word ‘SEVEN’ come up on the Grandstand vidiprinter for crying out loud. Elton John certainly made the right call by honouring his concert commitments. Javi Gracia’s side might have momentarily got their hopes up when they saw the starting lineups with Peppy G omitting Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne and Fernandinho for various reasons. By the end, Aguero will have felt completely robbed of a nailed on hattrick. That said, Watford’s Ben Foster, overlooked so that Heurelho Gomes could get a fine old send-off, will have realised he dodged a bullet as effectively as his replacement dodged the ball for 90 minutes. That might be a little harsh on the Brazilian supposed-to-be-shot-stopper, but having become the first goalkeeper in over 100 years to let in six in an FA Cup Final I think it is safe to say he won’t be overturning his decision to retire. Jose Holebas also had reason to feel particularly hard done by. Afterall, the FA had incredibly admitted a refereeing error and overturned Holebas’ red card gained last weekend

meaning he was available for the final. I bet he wishes they hadn’t bothered. But it could have been oh-sodifferent. Roberto Pereyra missed a great chance to put Watford ahead before Kompany appeared to get away with another handball in the area. City appear to have VAR under their spell in the FA Cup. It wasn’t available in the Swansea match meaning they got away with a couple and here, well let’s just say if the FFP panel are working in a similar way then the fans can still start planning their European away days next season. Kevin de Bruyne casually popped in for half-an-hour at the end which was enough for BT Sport to award him the man-of-the-match award, pipping Raheem Sterling and Gabby Jesus to the honour despite them both scoring twice and almost doing a full shift each. Sterling spent most of the game believing he’d scored a hat-trick having tried to pinch Jesus’ first of the day. It was a dangerous game as a younger Sterling has form on missing from there. The real winners were not Manchester City though. No, the real winners were their local rivals Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s lot can now fulfil that tricky International Champions Cup engagement that they still get invited to without the worry of being double booked with a pesky Europa League qualifying round. City’s win means they get to enter the second-tier competition in the group stages. Wolves were probably the losers in a weird kind of way. Despite their ‘delight’ to qualify for Europe, they will get

underway somewhere very random in the middle of July and, possibly, find themselves in a relegation scrap come the middle of March. Hey, I’m just going off what normally happens to first-time Europa League qualifiers from the Premier League. Granted, none of their predecessors have been run by Jorge Mendes so it might be a bit different for Nuno et al. Oasis are doing alright from this whole period of City dominance too, eh? I’m hearing them more often these days than I did in the late ’90s. Peppy G’s day didn’t end perfectly, sadly. Whilst the City players were collecting the medals he still had time to critique Sterling’s performance in what, cynically of course, looked like a cracking bit of ‘coaching for the cameras’. Then, in the post-match presser, he was asked whether he’d ever received payments from his bosses that weren’t strictly related to coaching Manchester City; just like one of his City forefathers, Roberto Mancini was alleged to have received. Rather than shrug it off and get back to the champagne, Guardiola bit and bit hard. It’s almost like there’s a bit of smoke and fire at the Etihad. Away from Wembley, Premier League managers with a question mark over their head are a little worried as Juventus have sacked Max Allegri. He’s up for a new challenge and, let’s be honest, the money’s alright in the Premier League, isn’t it? Graham Potter might not have got Swansea City promoted to the Premier League last season but he’s managed

to do it for himself. Brighton have admired his work from afar, particularly how the Swans nearly derailed Man City’s domestic quadruple before it really got going. They’ve admired it so much they are prepared to give Swansea £2m if they can let Potter go. Wilf Zaha has said, again, he’d really love to play Champions League football and isn’t convinced Crystal Palace can offer him that. Palace have said they completely understand where he’s coming from and they’ll happily let fulfil his dreams if someone is willing to pay them £100m. Look forward to another year in Croydon, Wilf. If you are young and English there is every chance you are currently on Man United’s radar so alert your agents. Solskjaer is thought to be keen on Jadon Sancho, who isn’t so keen apparently. Undeterred, Ole wants Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff who is currently recovering from a bad knee injury. Alongside Longstaff, United want Aaron Wan-Bissaka who is currently taking advice from Zaha for the places to have fun in Manchester. Declan Rice? They’ve made ‘enquiries’. And yet United are getting pelters from all angles for this transfer approach. Which is rather bizarre given how well their more recent ‘pay daft money for superstars’ approach has gone. Having watched Real Madrid on Sunday, I think we can all agree that Paul Pogba would fit in perfectly there.

I need to introduce a new cricketing phrase to your vocab, folks. “To Vince” – to look beautiful for the short time you are at the crease but, ultimately, get out, as ever, in the mid30s Fair play to Vincey, though. At least on Sunday, it wasn’t for wafting at one outside off stump. Oh, no. He’s improved that. Instead, he carted a long-hop, albeit a quickish long-hop, to deep midwicket to give away his chance of batting his way into England’s World Cup squad. I mean, it’s not as if there’s a bit of stiff competition for spots or anything. Could James Vince have not just held back a fraction? Pretty much throughout this ODI ‘series’, which has been little more than a glorified training session for England, there’s been a ton there for anyone who wants one. I’ll forgive Jason Roy taking three bites of the cherry to get there. The same goes for Joe Root and Eoin Morgan. You know these boys will (hopefully) stand up and be counted when it really matters. Ben Stokes won’t be overly worried and even Moeen Ali will be fairly confident that even despite his two ball dismissal on Sunday that he’s safe as houses. But Vince? I’m not convinced he could take his chance if he was allowed to bat all day every day for the next year in England colours. By the end of that little experiment, we’d have learned at least 354 different ways of getting out in the 30s. But what beautiful 30s they would be.

Ali, everyone contributed with the bat to So let’s recap this ODI battle. some degree and Pakistan were set 352 England won it. England won it doing whatever they to win. Being 6/3 off three overs made decided they wanted their challenge to another successful chase in the series a be that day, I should say. In the first (second because the actual little unlikely. So, what have England learned from first one got rained off ) match, Jos Buttler scared the life out of every this farcical practice series? Roy, Bairstow, Root, Morgan, Buttler bowling attack in the World Cup with a brutal 110 not out off about 10 balls. and Stokes make the top six no Alright, it was 50. England successfully questions asked. But who will be the defended their 373, just, winning by 12 replacement bat? It’s between Joe runs. In the second match, they mixed up the middle order to give Stokes and Moeen a go. End result? Roy and Jonny Bairstow set off like steam trains and England chased down 358 with 5 and a bit overs remaining. That’s their second ever highest run chase ticked off whilst mucking about with the batting order so that someone else gets a go. That’s one of the highest ever ODI run chases whilst treating it like a Sunday match so that everyone gets a proper bat and a bowl. James Vince In the third match, they were without Morgan who was, hilariously, Denly, who has been unremarkable but suspended because of a slow over-rate can bowl a bit of spin, and James Vince in the previous match. Well, if the ball who, well you know, could get some does keep getting hit out of the ground glorious to watch runs. It’s not the batting that should be any and all that. Roy got his ton after missing out twice and Vince, well Vincey got 43. concern whatsoever. The bowling hasn’t It was a lovely 43. England then mocked been amazing but then some up a batting collapse to give the lower- concession should be made for the fact order bats some practice in chasing. that each track so far has been designed They chased and Tom Curran saw them purely with an absolute run-fest in mind. home with three balls to spare. Just the It’s not that Pakistan cannot bat; far from it. They are as capable as anyone when 340 knocked off this time. And so to Sunday’s game at it comes to smacking 300+ on a road. It’s Headingley. Morgan decided this time just that they cannot field well enough that it would be good for England to or, at times, bowl well enough to defend pretend that they’ve lost the toss and it against a team like England. But it is a bowler who is going to have bat first. So they did. As I have alluded to, Vince didn’t take his chance. Other than their heart broken when the final squad

is announced. Why? Jofra Archer. He’s an X-factor player. He has to be in the squad. And that means someone else won’t be. I’m presuming Chris Woakes and Tom Curran are sleeping OK at the moment. Adil Rashid knows he’s guaranteed a spot (especially after that caught and bowled). But Mark Wood, David Willey, Liam Plunkett and Chris Jordan must all be ranking themselves in order or most likely to make way for Archer. Jordan’s never really been in the running for a spot and, personally, I can’t see the point of having Joe Denly there; so what if he can bowl spin? We have Rashid, Ali and, if needed, Joe Root to do that. For me, and what do I know, it makes more sense to keep the variation with the bowlers – Wood and Archer for sheer scare-the-life-out-of-them pace. Curran for variation and cunning (as well as his mad batting). Plunkett and Woakes for just knowing how to bowl in ODIs in England. And Willey, well having a left arm swing option is never a bad a thing with a 1030am start and some cloud cover, right? And, our batting tail is that strong that even if we did lose two bats for whatever reason we could call in Vincey, you lucky boy, and move everyone up one. There’s not many sides that can have a Tom Curran batting at ten, after all. And Adil Rashid has to be the best number 11 in the ODI game, no? So, my squad would be; Roy, Bairstow, Root, Morgan, Buttler, Stokes, Ali, Woakes, Curran, Rashid, Archer, Wood, Plunkett, Willey, Vince. Just watch Pakistan go and win the thing now; they’re very, very good value for a bet.

With 20 competitors sailing 11 boats this was the best turnout of 2019 for the SAMM Race Day on May 12th and this was matched by good weather at last. The morning race started in East 4.5 to 6 knot winds and the boats straggled crossing the start line with Ginetta 8 minutes late because of a jammed furling line so she soon retired. The race progressed without incident but often with close battles rounding marks. It was great to see some boats employing tactics within the rules to gain the advantage. The corrected times showed Shoestring Cuatro the winner just 2.35 seconds in front of the Shoestring Omega. The wind had veered to ESE 5 to 7

knots for the second race start which was fiercely contest by the whole fleet. With the wind gradually increasing to 11 knots, this highly competitive spirit continued throughout the whole 75 minutes of the race. At one point 8 boats rounded a mark within 6 seconds of each other. Although the Balaton Mistral was a clear winner by 16.15 seconds, only 32.27 seconds separated the first five boats and only 0.24 seconds separated the third and forth places. Excellent, tight and competitive racing by all boats to confirm this as “The Best Day This Season”. For full information and contact details for SAMM go to www.sailingmarmenor.com

Following the success of last years event Willie, who now lives in Orihuela Costa full time, has been inundated with requests from celebs to join in this years’ event and the line-up is pretty impressive. Triathlon

On Monday 24th June at Orihuela Costa Resort, La Zenia and on Tuesday 25th June at La Marina Hotel, Benidorm Willie Thorne will be hosting ‘An Evening with Gazza’, in which the man himself will re-lives his career highs and well publicised lows. This is a show that has been well received in the UK and provides a very interesting insight into the life of one of England’s greatest ever footballers. This year the proceeds will be divided between the AECC, to help fund its early detection cancer screening programme and 20/20 Voice Cancer Appeal, of which Willie Thorne is a patron. If you are interested in either or both of the events please call us on 0034 666 166 296 or visit: www.wtevents.es/shop

Sunday saw the seventh annual Playas de Orihuela Triathlon take place on Campoamor’s La Glea beach. The event was announced last week by the Councillor for Sport, Víctor Valverde and Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez. The Councillor for sport explained that the competition was ‘part of the Autonomous Triathlon Championship of the Valencian Community, and the event was fully subscribed well in advance’ reflecting the continued success of this sporting event." The competition began at 9.30am with around 250 people completing the 26 kilometre route. The first event was a 750 meter sea swim followed by a 20 kilometre bicycle route and finally the contestants completed a road race on foot of 5 kilometres. Víctor Valverde and Sofía Álvarez were accompanied by Paco Belmonte and José Caselles, president and vice-president of the Athletics Club Tragamillas, organiser of the event. In addition to the collaboration of the Department of Sports, Tourism and Beaches the event was also sponsored by Caja Rural Central. The Department of Tourism supplied fruit

and shirts for the contestants and provided a bus to travel to the coast to the event. The Concillor for Tourism explained that "municipal crews have worked hard to ensure that the beach at La Glea was transformed into a sporting venue and to showcase what Orihuela offers in terms of tourism." The athletes were the best tri-athletes from across the Valencian Community. The line up included the team from the University of Alicante, which was recently heralded the champion in Águilas, and there were also outstanding athletes at a national level as well as clubs from across the Community, all of which left organisers ‘very satisfied with the participation rates,’ said Jose Caselles. Paco Belmonte said: “For7 years the Triathlon Federation of the Valencian Community has relied on us to organise this Autonomic Championship, which means that we are on the right track and that this event is consolidated. Orihuela has everything necessary to be an attractive host from the tourist and sporting point of view and, therefore, this type of events can be developed successfully."
