ELCHE WOMAN KILLED BY PARTNER A 47-year-old woman was stabbed to death on Saturday morning in the garage of her own home. The murder

took place in Elche when the woman is believed to have been stabbed by her 51 year old partner – from whom she had separated ten days previously. The pair had two children, aged 21 and 17. It is believed that the victim was preparing to go to work at around 7.30am on Saturday when she was set upon with a knife by her partner, who was waiting for her in the garage of the family home. Witnesses claim that the man immediately admitted that he had killed his wife, and that it was he who called emergency services although conflicting reports claim that it was a neighbour who called the police. Paramedics attempted to save the woman but she died at the scene. Officials said that there had been no previous reports of domestic violence and that the couple’s children are now receiving psychological support from the town hall. The Mayor of Elche, Carlos González called for three minutes silence to condemn this latest gender violence murder.

The sub-delegate of the Government in Alicante, Araceli Poblador, revealed that the victim is the fifth woman to be murdered at the hands of her partner or ex partner in the Valencian Community so far this year, and the third in the Alicante province. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted, “Unbearable. Our society cannot tolerate this #ViolenciaMachista that murders women, destroys families and marks for life to some sons and daughters. DO NOT. We will not stop. #Not one less. My love for the family and

friends of the murdered woman Elche by her partner.” Since official figures began, 1,005 women have been killed by gender violence, 30 so far this year, not counting this weekend’s case, which has not yet been accounted for by the Ministry of Equality. The victim assistance telephone number, 016, is available 24 hours a day in 51 languages. It does not appear on the phone bill, although it must be manually deleted from the phone’s call history.

Cash injection to modernise industrial estates A total of 13 industrial estates across the Vega Baja will be able to be modernised thanks to the grant they will receive from the Generalitat. The Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (Ivace), dependent on the Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Labour, has granted 1.3 million euros for the improvement of these business areas. The municipalities that will benefit are: Albatera (Mos del Bou Industrial Estate), Almoradí (Las Maromas), Benijófar (Los Valeros), Bigastro (Apatel), Dolores (Los Azarbes), Formentera del Segura (The Nazarios), Guardamar del Segura (Santa Ana ), Jacarilla (Jacarilla Industrial Estate), Los Montesinos, (Levante II), Orihuela, (High Bridge), Rafal (Rafal Industrial Estate) San Isidro (La Granadina) and San Miguel de Salinas (Lo Quiles). modernisation and provision of infrastructure and services in industrial estates, industrial areas and technology Parks charged to the year 2019 and has a total budget of 13.6 million euros. The Minister of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Labour, Rafa Climent, stressed that with these grants "we aim to consolidate the commitment of the Ministry and the Ivace for the reindustrialisation of the region, the productive sectors and the implementation of companies that generate stable and quality employment and reactivate our

economy”. Among the improvements planned for the industrial Estates across the Vega Baja is the installation of a cycle path and eco-park, the implementation of closed circuit television (CCTV) that will allow better road and citizen safety, the adaptation of green areas and improvements in the drinking water supply network. Likewise, the replacement of existing street lighting with LED lights and road improvements such as pedestrian access to industrial estates will all be subsidised.

Glass recycling campaign to target fiesta

Youth summer programme announced Torrevieja’s new Councillor for Youth, Diana Box Alonso, presented the CIAJ (youth centre) summer programme earlier this week. The programme runs throughout July, August and September and is made up of a variety of activities, aimed at the town’s younger population, most of them completely free of charge. For teens between 12 and 17, there are three summer camps including a sports camp and technology camp. As well as a number of excursions and outings, there is a ‘School of Rap’ including workshops on poetry and prose. In August, International Youth Day will be celebrated with the 2019 Torrejoven Festival which takes place on August 10th at the natural swimming pools on Paseo Juan Aparicio and will feature bands, dancing, graffiti artists and many other creative youth collectives. Other activities include a 3D printing workshop, a talk about LGBTI and a trip to Ibiza. For more information, visit the CIAJ from 9 am to 2 pm, Monday through Friday, call 965714072 or visit torrevieja.es.

Orihuela is joining "La Reconquista del Vidrio" with the aim of raising awareness about the recycling of glass during the Moors and Christians Festivities. The Department of Street Cleaning and Urban Waste of the City of Orihuela has announced a communication campaign and environmental awareness initiative launched by Ecovidrio and the Valencian Regional Government, which aims to educate the citizens of Orihuela on the importance of selectively separating waste from glass containers during the course of the Moors and Christians festivities. To this end, twenty-six additional glass containers will be installed in the vicinity of the dancers, musicians and bars and containers will be distributed to facilitate the recycling of glass waste. Containers labelled with the campaign image will also be placed around the municipality. This year around 30 municipalities will

take part in "La Reconquista del Vidrio" across the Valencian Community. Each will compete to be the area that recycles the most kilos of glass per festival once the containers assigned to the campaign are emptied. The winners will receive economic aid of 1,500 euros towards the organisation of the festivities in 2020. In 2018, Orihuela participated and a total of 6,500 kg was collected, which meant 1.9 kg per attendee, and an increase of 19, 03 percent compared to the same period of 2017. Ten online promotions will be carried out on the website with questions about recycling glass containers and the Moors and Christians Festivities. Participants who respond correctly to the questions can win an exclusive miniglú with the campaign image. Further information can be found at: www.lareconquistadelvidrio.es. Mireille Toddington

San Fulgencio government increases salaries The socialist government in San Fulgencio has come under fire from opponents for increasing salaries by 18 percent as soon as it came into power. Alfredo Contreras, councillor for the Independent Party for Nationalities (PIPN), said: “Do you know of any job, where your salary rises at the beginning of the hiring?” His criticism came following the decision of the Mayor José Sempere Ballester - who governs with the support of Cs - to raise the salaries of the councillors of the government team. The Mayor recently presented the full

delegation of powers of the municipal government team, the appointment of deputy mayors and government representatives in collegiate bodies, as well as the proposal of the creation of four informative commissions. During the same plenary session, the remunerations were also presented. Councillor Contreras added: "This is where we have been given the biggest surprise and disappointment. The government team, newly elected, is granted an increase of up to 500 euros per month, to be received in fourteen monthly payments, for full-time

positions.” This represents an increase of "at least 18 percent" in respect to 2015. According to "our calculations, the increase is equivalent to an extra cost of around 40,000 euros per year for the municipal coffers”. The PIPN contrasts this decision with the fact that the municipality - of about 8,000 residents - carries "a public debt of more than 3 million euros and owes more than 140,000 euros to the staff of the local police” but during the weeks of municipal government has only recognised the new administration.

Mochican brings money for abandoned animals Following on from our article last week, on Saturday Beccie Strickleton went ahead with her charity event, shaving her long brown locks into a short purple Mochican in order to raise money for Finca la Castellana. At time of going to press, the event had raised around €1,100 and this puts the total Beccie has raised for the animal shelter over the past three years at an amazing €25,000. The event, held at Evolution Bar, La Fuente, attracted a crowd of around 80 people with Sunshine FM hosting a road show. Local performers gave their time for free to keep those watching

entertained. These included: Just Ollie, Carla Stone, Niki G and Texas Ted. The hairdresser was Tracey Taylor from The Hair Studio, Via Park 2 who gave her time and all of the products needed for free. A big thanks you also goes to Terry and her helpers for doing a great job on the tombolas and raffle and to all those who donated prizes. Finca la Castellana current houses around 240 animals, which cost around €3,000 a month just to feed. In addition to every day costs they are also costs associated with the medical care

and general healthy of the animals, such as treatments and veterinary costs. The Finca receives no official support or funding and donations or fundraising events are always much appreciated. Mireille Toddington

Accessible buses Torrevieja fleet

join

Torrevieja’s urban transporation fleet has been upgraded with two new buses; an investment of €500,000. The two new vehicles were presented by Mayor Eduardo Dolón and the director of Avanza in Levante, Luis González. González explained that the vehicles are of the latest generation with a capacity for 50 seated passengers each, and up to three places for passengers with reduced mobility. The low floor allows improved accessibility for all passengers and there has been a significant reduction in noise both inside and outside the vehicle (more than 50% reduction compared with older buses). C02 emmissions are also much less than older buses. There is free WIFI on board and both buses have a real time GPS tracker with ‘next stop’ information displayed in real time within the bus. At the launch, the mayor pledged to continue to improve the town’s public transport system, especially this summer when Torrevieja hosts part of the Vuelta de España. To this end, several additional bus services will be added in expectation of a large influx of visitors during the cycling event.

Valencian officer praised in New York An off duty police officer from Valencia was commended by both the New York Police Department and the Spanish police service for his bravery in aiding an NYPD officer. The Spanish police officer was on holidays in the ‘Big Apple’ with his girlfriend and witnessed the assault of a New York cop on Times Square. Realising that his American counterpart was about to have his gun taken by the assailant, the 36 year old Spanish officer came to his assistance. The Spaniard, who has been a serving police officer for 11 years, received an official letter from the New York Police Department to thank him for his bravery in helping a fellow American police officer. He also received commendation from the Spanish Consulate.

Private security guards to patrol salt lake The company that controls the salt production at Torrevieja’s ‘pink lake’ has contracted private security to prevent swimming. A guard will be posted in the areas usually frequented by swimmers and will be ready to inform visitors about the prohibition with brochures in four languages. The Autonomous Police will support the surveillance of the lake and are set to issue fines of between 60 and 600 euros to those flouting the rules. Many people who enjoy a dip in Torrevieja’s salt lake do not realise that they are actually prohibited from doing so. The reason is safety as the area is designated to the salt works which mines salt from the lake. The reason given for clamping down on bathers is that the machinery for collecting the salt does in fact operate close to this point and it is not a safe area for bathing. Continued on page 6

Three Costa Blanca beaches have been closed after a mystery fish bit two young children. A seven-year-old was taken to hospital after suffering three nasty bite wounds to his foot around 5.30pm on Friday at El Pinet beach in Elche. Half an hour later a 10-year-old child was hurt by a creature, which is believed to be the same fish on the same beach, which is in Elche half an hour’s drive south of Alicante. Local police and lifeguards decided to close the beach and two more nearby - La Marina and El Rebollo from about 6.30pm onwards – as a precaution. Elche Town Hall was due to decide early the following morning whether to remove the red flag and allow tourists and locals back into the water after tests to see if the bites contained poison. El Pinet is a beach in the south of the municipality of Elche on an impressive strip of dunes. It is just over a mile long and part of the beach is occupied with villas and restaurants.

In June three beaches were closed temporarily in the holiday resort of Benidorm after seven people were stung by Portuguese Men O’War and two of the jellyfish-like creatures were spotted. The first was found at Mal Pas beach, a little cove between the town’s main beaches, and the second was found at the popular Levante beach. The stings the bathers suffered were said to have been “minor”, although five of the seven people were taken to hospital. It is not known if any were British or Irish. Earlier that month a woman was left with excruciating marks all over her body after being stung by one of the creatures. Naomi Mateos, 22, was swimming at Puntas de Calnegre beach in Lorca, when she became ‘paralysed’ by a sharp sting. She said after a two-day stay in hospital: “I felt as if fire or acid was being injected into my body.”

BITE SIZE NEWS: Continued from page 5 At the end of last summer, the salt works requested the intervention of the police in dissuading people from entering the lake and surrounding area. However, the police do not have the capacity to include this area as part of their regular patrol and as such, the company has engaged a private security firm to keep an eye on things.

Two arrests in false note scam National Police in Alicante arrested two young people for allegedly cheating in a casino, using over €7000 in counterfeit bills to place bets. The arrests were the culmination of an investigation which has been ongoing for almost three months. Officers initially received a complaint from a security guard at an Alicante casino alerting them to a possible scam being carried out by two people using counterfeit bills. Investigators began following up the allegations and discovered that the pair would ask casino staff to change 500 euro notes for gambling chips. After placing a small bet, the pair would later change the remainder of the chips back for legal tender. They carried out this ‘transaction’ on various occasions and were able to change a total of 15 counterfeit 500 euro notes. Such was the quality of the counterfeit notes, police engaged the services of the Bank of Spain to study the bills. Technicians at the National Counterfeiting Analysis Centre of the Bank of Spain indicated that the bills presented many of the technical characteristics of genuine bank notes and even passed some ‘machine’ detectors.

Off duty police douse house fire in Almoradí

The Forever Tree The Forever Tree is a children’s book penned by local author Margaret Booth, published under her penname, Trinity Starlite. It is a story of growth, survival and the beauty of nature, told in simple terms. Margaret has written all her life – mostly journaling her own experiences – but has never before published a book until now. She explained, “I love writing and adore books. I have always been surrounded by reading and books. I saw that a publisher was inviting submissions, so having spoken to my daughter about an idea we had for a children’s story, I decided to go for it.” Margaret didn’t hear anything from the publisher for almost a full year, and suddenly (around the time of the change to data protection legislation) the publisher got in touch to say that she had not responded to their offer of a contributory publishing contract and were wondering if they should keep her manuscript on file. Margaret said, “I obviously missed the first communication from them and it was only thanks to the data protection law change that they reached out to me again!” The book was published by Austin MacAuley, a publishing house which offers authors both traditional and contributory publishing deals. In

www.costablancapeople.com

Margaret’s case, she was offered a contributory contract which means she paid towards the cost of having her book published. She said that her friend referred to this as ‘Vanity Publishing’. However, in this case the term vanity publishing is a misnomer. Margaret’s aim is simply to leave something of herself behind – a legacy of sorts. Throughout the process, the writing, the instruction of illustrators, Margaret’s grandchildren were always at the forefront of her mind. Such is the importance of books and reading in her own life, this is something she wanted to pass on to her three grandchildren here on earth, and to honour her angel grandchild in heaven. The story itself is a simply told tale of a seed which grows into a cherry blossom tree. The tree has many roles – shelter for animals, a playground for children, shade for a weary worker and then in Spring, it bursts into radiant pink life and sprinkles the air and ground with the confetti of its leaves. Margaret has always been enchanted by cherry blossom and was inspired by

the Japanese tradition of Hanami. Hanami is the ancient tradition of going to enjoy the blooming of cherry blossoms (sakura) in parks and throughout the countryside in Japan. Hanami literally means "viewing flowers," but it generally indicates cherry blossom viewing. It's said that the origin of hanami dates back more than a 1,000 years to when aristocrats enjoyed looking at beautiful cherry blossoms and wrote poems inspired by them. Such is the beauty of the cherry blossom, it is small wonder that after a thousand years of tradition in Japan, it has inspired a Manchester Grandmother, living on the Spanish Costa Blanca to publish a children’s book about the story of the tree. If you would like to order a limited edition copy of The Forever Tree, you can do so online at www.austinmacauley.com/book/forevertree or, drop in to Kosta Kitchens in Torrevieja where Margaret works and she will happily arrange the order for you. The book is priced at €10.99.

Two Guardia Civil officers had to be treated for smoke inhalation but did not need hospitalisation after the two off duty cops extinguished a fire in a house in Almoradí. The incident happened about 10:15pm and the officers were first alerted by cries for help and the shouts of "fire!" coming from the second floor of a block of flats in the town. Without hesitation, they went to the property and could the smoke billowing out. After checking that no one was inside, they began to douse the flames with the help of two fire extinguishers that they found on the stairs. When the fire fighters arrived, the fire was already extinguished, although it was necessary to use several ventilation devices to check the building. Apparently, the fire had started by chance in the extractor hood of the kitchen cooker. The two Civil Guards, who serve at the main Headquarters in Dolores, had to be treated for inhaling large amounts of smoke and showing signs of breathing difficulties. Fortunately, they did not need hospitalisation. Mireille Toddington

Political gridlock Long after Spaniards cast their votes in national, regional and local polls, political parties remain unable to reach governing deals, raising the chances of repeat elections. Most political actors describe the current atmosphere as devoid of loyalty, sincerity or trust, while politicians blame one another for a deadlock that could force an exhausted electorate to return to the ballot boxes ahead of time. At the national level, a recent meeting between acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Pablo Iglesias of the leftist Unidas Podemos evidenced the divide between two politicians, who have been trying to reach a governing agreement since the elections on 28th April. With two weeks to go before parliament holds a vote to officially appoint the new PM, the Socialists – who won the election but fell well short of an overall majority – are still refusing to consider a coalition government with Unidas Podemos. The most that Sánchez’s party will consider is the possibility of placing independent candidates “of renown” in a few ministerial positions. As an alternative, Podemos members could be offered mid-level government posts. But Iglesias – whose Unidas Podemos came in fourth at the election with 42 seats, compared with the PSOE’s 123 lawmakers – views this as insufficient. “What Spain needs is a leftist coalition government, and we hope to convince the PSOE to be more flexible,” said the Podemos leader following the meeting. “[Sánchez’s] position defending a single-

party government goes against what citizens voted for. And I think that sooner or later they will rectify.” The Socialists quickly issued a reply. “The recent meeting did not bear fruit; it seems that Iglesias is more concerned about Cabinet appointments than about policymaking,” said Adriana Lastra, the party vice-secretary and congressional spokesperson for the PSOE. The investiture debate and vote are scheduled for 22nd and 23rd July 22. On 23rd July, an absolute majority will be required in Congress for Sánchez to be successful. Failing that, a second vote will be held two days later, with only a simple majority of more yes than no votes required. According to sources at Podemos, Sánchez has said “that he will take the country to new elections if he does not have enough support at the investiture vote in July.” Lastra has denied the claim, saying that Iglesias is simply not serious about negotiating. But Unidas Podemos apparently feels the same way about the PSOE. “Pedro Sánchez does not want to negotiate, he is trying to unilaterally impose a single-party government. It is not sensible for the PSOE to act as though it had an absolute majority when it doesn’t,” said a party source. Unidas Podemos has said it will ask grassroots party members to vote on whether the party should support Sánchez’s investiture bid, whether or not there is a deal. Although the party has more than half a million registered members, only the 190,000 affiliates

who are considered active – they have voted before or entered their profile on the party’s website – will be allowed to vote. The poll, which is expected to take place next week or close to the date of the investiture session, is binding under Unidas Podemos’ rules. Spanish politics are not just blocked at the national level. A similar scenario is on display in key regions such as Madrid, where a government is yet to be formed following the May 26 election. The Madrid regional assembly is about to hold an investiture session without any actual candidate to invest with power, and a repeat election will be held if no cross-party agreement emerges before early September. Last week, the far-right Vox party informed the regional assembly leader that its 12 lawmakers will not support Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the PP’s nominee to head the Madrid region, at a scheduled vote. “We are not going to support the [governing] agreement between the PP and Ciudadanos because it is dead,” said Vox’s own candidate to lead the region, Rocío Monasterio. Ever since it burst onto the political scene at the Andalusian elections of December 2018, Vox has been propping up right-wing governments in several parts of Spain without officially joining the executives. Without Vox’s support, Ayuso has 56 votes (from her own PP and from the center-right Ciudadanos) compared with 64 for the socialist candidate Ángel Gabilondo, who is backed by the PSOE, Unidas Podemos and the leftist Más Madrid group. Neither figure is enough

for a majority. The Madrid assembly speaker, Juan Trinidad, said that the investiture session will be held as planned anyway, in order to officially start the two-month period after which a new regional election must be held if no agreement is reached before that. A similar story is playing out in the Murcia region, where the PP and Ciudadanos want to head a joint government but need support from Vox, which refuses to play along unless it gets a say in the drafting of governing programs. Deja Vu Spain already experienced a repeat election in June 2016, six months after a

ballot that yielded a fragmented parliament and no candidate with enough parliamentary support to form a government. The country has gone through three national elections in under four years, reflecting a new political fragmentation after decades of two-party dominance by the PSOE and the conservative Popular Party (PP). And if no government is formed soon, there will be a fresh national vote in November. On 26th May of this year, Spaniards also went to the polls in local, regional and European elections. A recent survey showed that citizen concern over the state of Spanish politics is at its highest since 1985.

Delayed passengers bussed to Torrevieja 90 passengers were left stranded for ten hours when the delay of a flight from Alicante to Bilbao meant they had to be bussed to a hotel in Torrevieja. As required by law for long delays, the airline was obliged to provide accommodation for the passengers as well as transport to and from the airport to catch the new flight. Delays in the summer months are expected, but delays of this length are unusual. Last summer was a nightmare for European air travel with an increase in delays by as much as 105% in some Spanish airports. According to Eurocontrol, the European organization for the safety of air navigation, currently the gap between the capacity of the airspace and the progressive growth of flights in summer

is considered insurmountable. In other words, said Eurocontrol, many summer passengers will suffer a degradation of the service and a violation of their travel rights. This situation has led to a strong response from Spanish travellers. In the last decade, claims for cancellations and delays have soared 297% and 285% respectively. The European Union, through Regulation EC 261, establishes rules on compensation and assistance to air transport users. There is no doubt, as the statistics show, that passengers are becoming more aware of their rights and are exercising them. In 2018 in Spain, more than 450 flights per day suffered delays of more than 15 minutes or were cancelled.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has announced that the National Commission of UNESCO has supported the candidacy of Orihuela to join the Network of Creative Cities and is the only one in the country to be shortlisted in the literature category. Three other Spanish cities have been shortlisted but none in literature. The Mayor said: "Having overcome the first cut and being one of the four cities in Spain that are vying for this international award is already a reason for satisfaction and pride. This demonstrates the enormous heritage that our city has and places us in cultural focus at a national and global level.” Emilio Bascuñana was

accompanied by Sabina-Goretti Galindo, councillor for the government team and who will be responsible for this initiative from now on; Miguel Ángel Fernández, who was the councillor for Industrial Promotion in the previous term; and Juan José Sánchez, independent consultant to the Department and Co-Director of Ibero-American and Alejandro Roemmers chairman of Cultural and Creative Industries. The City of Orihuela has based its bid on its multicultural potential and linguistic richness, the invigoration of its rich natural and cultural heritage, its important archives and printing tradition, its active community of writers and creators and the figure

of the Oriolan poet Miguel Hernández. The Orihuela candidacy has submitted a Strategic Plan of Urban Transformation through Literature (2020-2024), "with an Action Plan that is articulated in six Programs that are developed, in turn, in twelve Projects, all aimed at the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Agenda 2030 and the UNESCO Creative Cities Network ", explained councillor Sánchez. Orihuela will contribute to improving coexistence and social integration, access to culture, specifically to reading and literary creation. Mireille Toddington

N332 honoured with party invite Founder of the N332 Facebook page, Francisco Morales, was honoured guest at a party in the British Embassy in Madrid. Guardia Civil traffic officer Morales was among guests invited to the Embassy to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. Francisco told the Costa Blanca People, “We were invited in recognition of the service we provide to the British Community.” The N332 Facebook page and related website, N332.es, provides information on driving in Spain to help foreigners stay safe on the roads. With many rules and

regulations different to those of our home nations, the information provided by the N332 group has proved useful to many road users here – including the 128,000 people that follow the page on Facebook. At the party, both the British Ambassador, Simon Manley and the Congressional spokesperson for Ciudadanos, Inés Arrimadas, commended the N332 project and the recognition that it has now achieved by the DGT, Spain’s transport authority.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The pound is struggling in Brexit limbo; since April, sterling has fallen an average of 4%, losing four and a half euro cents. There was no assistance from the statistics this week; the British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) report highlighted “the worst June on record,” and suggested there was no improvement on the horizon and that the outlook was “bleak.” The UK output data for May were all weaker than forecast. Economic growth in the three months to May was in line with analysts' predictions. May's trade deficit was smaller than expected. The slight reprieve was sterling was a narrowly approved motion in parliament to prevent any incoming Prime Minister to close parliament in order to force through a no-deal Brexit. The issue is a growing concern; this week the Bank of England (BoE) governor Mark Carney stated that, “The perceived likelihood of no-deal Brexit has increased since last year. Although the degree of preparedness for such a scenario has improved, material risks still remain.” The BoE report suggested that the City was prepared for such a scenario but there would still be significant disruption for companies and their customers in the EU, warning of “material economic disruption” from a no-deal departure.

EUR The election of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and New Democracy, a conventional centre-right party, in Greece has lessened the risk to the euro but economic statistics overshadowed the more positive news. In Germany, exports had increased and imports decreased in May, but the output was down by an annual 3.7%. German inflation was in line with forecast at 1.6%. The weakness of the pound has meant that the euro has held relatively steady, but there are signs of challenging times ahead. The change of leadership in the EU commission and the challenging statistics across Europe, together with global trade tensions may mean that the euro may face challenging times, particularly once the Brexit shadow starts to dissipate as the new UK Prime Minister’s approach becomes clear.

Special reception for top student Torrevieja town hall hosted an official reception for student Carlos Rodríguez González, the student with the highest university entrance grades in the entire country. Carlos, who is set to begin his studies at the Royal School of Dramatic Arts in Madrid, attended Torrevieja’s IES Las Lagunas. Accompanying Carlos to the reception was the director of the school Horacio Moralejo and the Councillor for Education, as well as the Mayor Eduardo

Dolón. Dolón said that Torrevieja is proud of Carlos’ success, which shows that the young people of Torrevieja and its schools have the capacity for greatness. Horacio Moralejo, director of the school, thanked Carlos for the six years he has spent in the IES and everything that teachers have learned from him. He also took the opportunity to present Carlos with a plaque in memory of his time at

Las Lagunas and to recognise his high score on the university entrance examination. Eduardo Dolón presented Carlos with a diploma from the City of Torrevieja, in recognition of his successes. The mayor also made reference to the work of musical theatre written and directed by Carlos which was staged in Torrevieja’s Virgen del Carmen theatre last April. The mayor invited Carlos to re-enact the play.

Goodbye San Miguel accident black spot The works to address the dangerous accident black spot on the CV-95 in San Miguel is on the verge of being finished. The roundabout is already operational at the junction and there are just a few more improvements to be made. The Government has invested 1.4 million euros in the project, which began last November and also includes a new filter lane giving access to an urbanisation next to the road. In the absence of the dual carriage way that was supposed to be constructed between Orihuela with Torrevieja, this project has also removed a junction from the CV-95 in Bigastro and the final phase will be the construction of another roundabout at the Los Montesinos junction. Seagate Wealth Management

Keeping it local M

any people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of supervision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but ongoing support and monitoring of the investments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental principles: the strength of the relationship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meetings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up to date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are performing. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control.

If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transferring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

Grow with success

T

he summer months don't mean that your garden has to resemble desert-like conditions, there are plants that will thrive on very little water, and they're perfect for gardening with satisfaction in Spain. Just a ramble through the countryside will show you that plants can survive anywhere. So, whether you have a patch of land to call your own, a few acres or even hectares of terra firma, or just a balcony or terrace, explore the horticultual world and discover what are the best planting options. Succulents and Cacti. Have a look at places that are hot all year round and you'll encounter species of Cacti and Succulent thriving under the practically sun. They're midday impossible to kill off, and can be ignored completely for lengthy periods. Cycas These are mostly stunning trees, can be grown in pots, and make great architectural features, they're the wow factor plants. They take a long time to grow, but you can pick them up in mature states very reasonably here in Spain. Hibiscus It's just such a pretty plant, the tropical trumpeting flower in all shades, from palest pink to vibrant sunny yellow. Used in hedges, along motorways, to decorate pedestrian shopping streets and balconies and courtyards all over Spain, it's easy to look after and gives instant flowering results. It needs less regular watering if it's planted straight into the ground, rather than a pot.

Hypericum bushy and Squat ornamental plants with showy flowers that just keep on flowering. They handle the heat well, as of protective they're themselves, owing to the squat and dense shape and structure. Kalanchoe Another type of succulent, with fat rubbery leaves and tiny clusters of showy flowers, plant them small in pots for your balcony, into a rockery or together in clumps for colour and low structure. The leaves will soak up and water and dole it out accordingly to the plant's needs. Lavender The ultimate favourite for scent and colour, think of the Spanish sun on an evening courtyard with the heady scent of Lavender as you brush past the pretty flowering heads. Plant in dry, and well drained sandy soil, in full sun, and take advantage of this natural and wonderful scented plant. As will the busy bees, using the nectar to flavour their delicious Spanish honey. Passiflora The Passion Flower will grow like a weed, ideally propped up against a wall that is sheltered from winds and any harsher weather. They're essentially vines - and we all know how well vines do in Spain! You might even get some of your own passion fruit for a Spanish 'desayuno' or breakfast.

Osteopermum A member of the Daisy family, this is a very pretty flower that is also quite clever. It closes up at night and stretches back out to greet the morning sun, protecting itself from night colds and chills. The purple varieties are a firm favourite, and the sheer perfection of this circular flower makes it a popular one for pots and borders, although as before, more watering is needed for the potted varieties. Yucca A collection of 50 tree shaped shrubs, spiky and tough, elongated sword shaped leaves, and rewarding you in Spain with clumps of white flowers. A good sharp anti burglar plant too, place them below windows for added protection. Great form and design, they'll suit an architecturally pleasing garden but may not be so child friendly. They grow brilliantly well anywhere in the warmer regions of Spain.

Spain in top five of countries for expats Spain ranks fourth as the best place to work and live, according to people who participated in the latest HSBC Expat Explorer Survey, published on Thursday. This is the best position since the survey began 12 years ago. Last year, Spain ranked 13th. This year Switzerland, Singapore and Canada were ahead of Spain, which was followed by New Zealand in the Top 5 category. The study focuses on people over 18 who live and work outside their home country. The British company used feedback from 18,059 individuals who answered 27 online questions between February and March of this year. Indicators are divided into three broad groups covering living standards, professional and financial goals, and opportunities for children. According to this classification, there are three

main reasons that make Spain a top destination: personal safety, the weather, and quality of life. As for safety, 61 percent of respondents said they felt more protected in Spain than in their home country. The good weather was described as a major determining factor by 39 percent of respondents, while 56 percent underscored quality of life as the main reason they chose Spain. The report also highlights that 83 percent of foreign residents felt their overall wellbeing had improved in Spain, and that 62 percent had decided to extend their stay. The weak points are on the professional and financial fronts. Respondents said that Spain is not the best place for career advancement or to make a good salary. The average annual salary of respondents living in Spain is €36,000, around half of the global average of €67,300.

Aldi gin named best in the world! Take your G&T to a whole new level by making it with a gin that has just been crowned the best in the world. Aldi’s own-label Greyson's Seville Orange & Persian Lime Gin has been picked up a Masters award, the top accolade, at the Spirits Business Gin Masters. Not only is it delicious but, at £14.99, it's 40 percent of the price of Tanqueray Flor De Sevilla Gin, offering shoppers a huge £10 saving on the trendy citrus-based drink. The nation’s love of flavoured gins shows no sign of slowing down, with a whopping 66 million bottles sold in 2018 alone. So it’s no wonder that Greyson’s Seville Orange &

Persian Lime Gin scored the nod of approval from the judges – achieving one of the highest ever awards received for the supermarket’s spirits range. Aldi's Harrison’s Gin (£15.99) and Passionfruit Gin Liqueur (£9.99) also took home coveted gold and silver medals respectively. Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “It’s an incredible achievement to be recognised for our gin range at such a prestigious competition, not only once, but three times! "We’ve seen the trend for flavoured gins become increasingly popular over the last few years and we’re thrilled to see that the quality of our products makes them stand out from the crowd with both our loyal customers and gin connoisseurs alike.”

Welcome to Nice Located in the French Riviera, on the south east coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of the Alps, Nice is the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast and the second-largest city in the ProvenceAlpes-Côte d’Azur region after Marseille. Nice is about 13 kilometres (8 miles) from the principality of Monaco, and its airport is a gateway to the principality as well. The natural beauty of the Nice area and its mild Mediter-ranean climate came to the attention of the English upper classes in the second half of the 18th century, when an increasing number of aristocratic families took to spending their winters there. The city’s main seaside promenade, the Promenade des Anglais (Walkway of the English) owes its name to visitors to the resort. For decades now, the picturesque Nicean surroundings have attracted not only those in search of relaxation, but also those seeking inspiration. The clear air and soft light have particularly appealed to some of Western culture’s most outstanding painters, such as Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Niki de Saint Phalle and Arman. Their work is commemorated in many of the city’s museums, including Musée Marc Chagall, Musée Matisse and Musée des Beaux-Arts. Nice has the second largest hotel capacity

in the country and it is one of its most visited cities, receiving 4 million tourists every year. It also has the third busiest airport in France, after the two main Parisian ones. Cuisine The cuisine of Nice is especially close to those of Provence but also Liguria and Piedmont and uses local ingredients (olive oil, anchovies, fruit and vegetables) but also those from more remote regions, in particular from Northern Europe, because ships which came to pick up olive oil arrived full of food products, such as dried haddock. Nice has a few local dishes. There is a local tart made with onions and anchovies (or anchovy paste), named Pissaladière. Socca is a type of pancake made from chickpea flour. Farcis niçois is a dish made from vegetables stuffed with a mixture of breadcrumbs, meat (generally sausage

and ground beef) and herbs and salade niçoise is a tomato salad with green peppers of the Corne variety, baked eggs, tuna or anchovies, and olives.

In sickness and in health

It's hard making friends

My husband and I don't have a good marriage. We were both talking about divorce, and I was about to leave him when he got ill. He is now partially disabled, although he does get about with a stick and sometimes uses a wheelchair. He has an adapted car, and still works. I stayed to help him to begin with, but our relationship is far worse now and he constantly abuses me mentally. I am so down and unhappy, I wish I'd have left sooner but I felt obligated. He has family who could help. Do you have any advice?

I am 12. We recently moved house and I changed schools. I am different from other boys and I find it difficult to make friends. I have hobbies like having reptiles for pets, I like to dress differently, and my family are Churchgoers. Friends don't seem to want to be with me because of these things.

When any marriage is as miserable as yours, something needs to be done. If you were thinking about leaving before your husband became disabled, then you are to be commended for staying initially to look after him, but if he is independent and is also working, you really have no need to stay. Wouldn't you both be happier apart? See your solicitor, and talk to his family about them stepping in to help.

Are you sure your friends don't want to be with you because of what you do in your spare time? Lads in particular would be interested in seeing your reptiles, so why not invite them round? It's fine if you want to dress differently and express yourself at your age - a lot of people do it. Have you thought about joining a club for keepers of reptiles? And is there a group at Church for the younger people? If you can find friends who share the same interests, then you have a good start. Also, see what's going on at school, and go along to any after school activities. This is a good way to make friends.

Booze free beaches

Lifeguards on Spanish beaches want to see alcohol banned to keep bathers safe, pointing out the dangers of drinking and then going into the sea. Although children are the most vulnerable to drowning in pools and the sea, statistically, most victims are adults, the RFESS says. Exactly a third of those who drown are pensioners, according to safety and prevention commission coordinator Jéssica Pino. “Age-related physical problems, such as reduction in mobility, heart conditions and the greater risk of heart attacks that come with age are among the main risks,” Sra Pino says. “The middle-aged and the elderly are not conscious that their abilities, response times and mobility are gradually reducing – add to this the lack of a culture of first aid knowledge in Spain, and the risk is higher.” CPR, mouth-to-mouth and other basic first aid skills are not

habitually taught in schools in Spain, and the RFESS wants to see this changing. But the main cause of drowning in the 30-45 age group is alcohol, she reveals. “Chiringuitos [temporary beach kiosks set up for summer] are normally very close by when someone gets into trouble in the sea,” says Sra Pino. “We need to start setting up '0,0' or '0 percent' beaches. Many accidents in the sea could have been prevented if the person were accompanied. Where people have no option but to go to the beach alone, they should opt to go for a paddle as close as possible to the lifeguard's station. Watch out for rip-tides, be careful with lilos and bodyboards, do not jumping off rocks or cliffs unless you know exactly what is on the sea bed and always obey lifeguards' instructions and warning flags. A green flag means bathing is safe, a yellow one means precaution is necessary and only strong swimmers should go beyond the very shallowest waters, and a red flag means entering the sea is banned – at risk of a fine of up to €1,500. Lifeguards are not obliged to enter the sea if someone gets into trouble after ignoring a red flag, but in practice, their human instinct takes over and they usually do, meaning they are

putting their own lives in danger. If hazardous waves and the threat of hefty fines are not enough to deter people from bathing when the red flag is flying, beach-goers should be aware that these are also hoisted when there are large quantities of jellyfish or even raw sewage in the water. Jéssica Pino says nobody but extra-strong professionalstandard swimmers should enter the sea unless lifeguards are on duty – 90 percent of people who get into trouble in the water do so off beaches with no first aider on duty, or before or after their shifts. Even though beaches are busiest at these times, it is not recommended to enter the sea until at least 10.30am or 11.30am in the morning, when lifeguards set up their posts, and to stay out of the sea after around 7pm or 8pm when they go off duty. The Red Cross has started an awareness campaign along all Spain's coasts this summer, which will include free first aid workshops that cover CPR, mouth-to-mouth, the recovery position, airway-breathingcirculation drills, and all other techniques that could save a life. Also during the campaigns, advice on avoiding accidents will be given, and a rescue simulation carried out with instructions for those who attend on what to do if they witness an emergency.

Benidorm buffet clampdown Benidorm begins crackdown on buffets as ‘1 tonne’ of food waste thrown away per restaurant each year. Brits could soon be forced to go without big buffet meals at Spanish resorts as Benidorm has become the first destination to address food waste. Hotel association HOSBEC has recognised it could prove an unpopular move among holidaymakers – who are used to a massive range of choices at breakfast, lunch and evening meals. But the group insists something has to be done to tackle the ‘overabundance’ of food. Plans range from fewer choices at buffet counters, to bringing in pre-packed starters or

desserts. Signs will also be put up asking hotel clients to ‘think twice’ before they pile so much food on their plates – and those who participate may even

get ‘rewards’ from hotels. “We understand that the challenge is complex, especially in the holiday hotel sector where the gastronomic offer is based on the free buffet,” HOSBEC said in a statement. “However, this translates into a tendency to offer a great variety of dishes which in many occasions leads to an over-abundance of food.” The driving force, the organisation insists, is the sheer waste of food in a tourist trade that is becoming more committed to sustainability and care of the environment. The group estimates that in Spain, each restaurant throws away more than a tonne of food each year as a result of over-packed buffets.

Low factor children’s sun cream

Children’s SPF 50+ sun cream revealed as only factor 15, but Spain’s Ministry of Health says it’s ‘not a risk’. Spain has ruled that sun creams labelled as

dangerous by a consumer group are ‘not a risk’. The Ministry of Health responded to the Organisation of Consumers and Users’ (OCU) damning assessment of the Isdin and Babaria brands. Despite being labelled SPF 50+, the children’s creams were found to be just SPF 15 and 30, respectively. But now, the scientific studies presented by both firms have been deemed valid, as well as those of the OCU. “A certain variability has been

observed in the methodology used among the laboratories,” said a spokesperson from the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS). The OCU and AEMPS have both now called for testing to be ‘standardised’ so discrepancies are less likely to occur. It comes after the OCU conducted a comparative study of 17 different SPF 50+ children’s sun creams in May. Isdin and Babaria’s products were the only two to have ‘failed’ the testing.

that are on corner plots incur higher fees. Not only are there costs involved, but there are also rules that must be followed. These rules are normally related to a shared swimming pool. For example, some communities have set times when the pool can be used.

What does being on a “community” mean? If you’re buying an apartment, duplex or a detached property with a shared communal area like a swimming pool, entrance, driveway, garages, etc. it is highly likely that the property is within a community, of which you will have yearly charges to pay. These community fees cover any maintenance costs that arise from any amenities that are shared between the homeowners, like making sure the swimming pool is cleaned, the communal pathways/hallways are cleaned and lit, lifts are serviced, gardens are maintained and watered, and depending on the individual community, exterior painting and building insurance could be included too. The fees are usually broken down and paid quarterly, however they can vary in actual cost, depending on how many properties belong to the community. Even though houses within a community could be the same size, the fee also depends on the size of the land the property sits on. You’ll usually find homes

In general, the benefits of being on a community, makes sure all of the shared amenities run smoothly and look their best! Buying? Enjoy the journey! Emmerdale actor dies at 91 Emmerdale star Freddie Jones has died at the age of 91. The actor, who played Sandy Thomas in the ITV soap, passed away, his agent has confirmed. Freddie was the father of British acting legend Toby Jones and two other sons in the industry - the director Rupert Jones and actor Casper Jones. His wife - their mother - is the actress Jennifer Heslewood. He was part of the show for 13 years, joining in 2005 and filing his last

scene in 2018. Freddie had an interesting background, having worked as a lab assistant for ten years before signing up to acting on a fulltime basis. He joined the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Company and found fame as a stage actor, before dabbling in film and television work. As well as his role on Emmerdale, Freddie was known for his stage work,

impressing critics with his portrayal of Standley in the Pinter-directed revival of The Birthday Party. He was also in films The

Elephant Man, Dune and Wild At Heart, as well as the TV series On The Air in 1992. Freddie made his first appearance in Emmerdale as Ashley's dad in 2005, on his son's wedding day. The pair were estranged after he helped Ashley's mother die from a terminal illness but they became close again after spending time together. However he was left devastated when it was revealed that Ashley was suffering from early onset dementia and later died. Speaking about his decision to leave the soap, Freddie told the Radio Times last year: "The company generously offered

me another 12 months. But I just thought, 'I have no idea what I’m going to do in another bloody year!' The drama that Ashley’s death [Jones’s screen son, played by John Middleton] gave me last year was monumental. "But that’s gone now. I travel three hours by car, book into a hotel and then get up the next day to say maybe three sentences. And then do a three-hour journey back. I can’t justify staying, even though Emmerdale was very generous in asking me to." Freddie leaves behind his wife Jennifer and their three sons.

Ice cream or Gelato

So what exactly is the difference between these two frozen treats? One of the key differences between the two is butterfat. While ice cream's main ingredients include milk, cream, sugar, and egg yolks, the secret to making gelato is to use much less cream and sometimes little to no egg yolk. This leads to a much smaller percentage of butterfat in gelato. The FDA rules say that ice cream cannot contain less than 10 percent milkfat (though it can go as high as 25 percent) while gelato, much like soft serve, stays in the 4- to 9percent range. The churning method for both also differs, which affects the

treat's density. Ice cream is churned at a much faster pace, leading to more air being whipped into the mixture. Ice cream's higher butterfat content comes into play here—due to all of that milkfat, the mix absorbs the air more readily. Gelato, on the other hand, is churned at a slower pace and absorbs far less air, creating a much denser dessert. You also might have noticed that the serving style for the two treats aren't the same, either. In order to get those perfectly stacked ice cream scoops on a cone, buckets of ice cream must be stored at around 0°F to maintain its consistency, while

the softer gelato is stored at a warmer 10°F to 22°F. Ice cream is then scooped into fairly uniform balls with the round ice cream scooper, whereas a spade or paddle is best for molding gelato into mound in a cup or a cone. You can't really go wrong with either gelato or ice cream on a sweltering summer day, but there is one more difference to keep in mind while you debate which to get: taste. If you want a bolder flavor, you'll want to go with gelato. Because of the density of the cream and because there's less butterfat to coat your taste buds, gelato can seem to have more intensity to its flavours.

Life too short to boil potatoes This week Bake Off’s Nadiya Hussain has put her head above the food parapet, with reports of a recipe from her new TV series, Time To Eat, that uses tinned potatoes to create “the quickest roast potatoes you will ever make”. It has drawn comparisons with the time Delia Smith used frozen mash, causing the nation to collectively clutch its pearls and/or stomach. “Think how long [potatoes] are going to take to peel, then boil – I have saved 30 minutes. Sometimes when I’m making a potato salad I don’t boil my own potatoes, I take them straight out of a can,” Hussain says, before whacking some spuds into the oven with sundried tomatoes, balsamic vinegar and salt (thereby upping the foodieapproval ratings somewhat). Speaking to Radio Times, Hussain is brooking no argument. “What has happened to society is that we have become really pretentious. But there was a time in my life where I really had to choose between boiling potatoes and paying my gas bill, so I would buy a can of potatoes. “We live in a world where we often get told what we should and shouldn’t do. I don’t think we should worry so much. Think about how much time you save by not boiling those potatoes, and they

taste so good – they taste even better when you think about how you haven’t slaved over a hot stove to make them.” She is not alone in championing tinned potatoes. Jack Monroe wrote in her recent book, Tin Can Cook, about the shade she received when recommending them. “In my Guardian recipe column, readers would tut below the lines in the comments section every time I chopped a tin of potatoes into a saag aloo or casserole, so I responded by including an entire chapter of the blessed bleached things in Cooking on a Bootstrap by way of retort.” Having served a three-course meal for a group of diners at a five-star restaurant made entirely from cut-price supermarket tins, one man “was memorably apoplectic”, Monroe writes, when the tin-can plan was revealed. “Oh, I laughed at his furious

notion that somehow tinned potatoes were going to kill him, when moments before he had declared it the best meal he had ever eaten.” Nadia recommends keeping a tin or jar of them in the cupboard. They’re just the thing for an after-work curry as they are already cooked and don’t need peeling. While their texture is a bit odd – they are weirdly smooth and look like fake pebbles – they are a total winner for speed, and they don’t go manky or turn into triffids if you forget that you’ve bought them. They are also a source of vitamins B1, C and fibre. And they contain some copper, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, vitamins B3 and B5. Monroe’s recipe for Spanish patatas bravas (oil, chilli flakes, paprika, halved tinned potatoes and salt and pepper, put into a pan and cooked or 15 minutes) would be an easy, cheap and comforting evening meal at the end of any day.

Make it don’t buy it.... There's no denying that supermarkets offer convenience when it comes to grocery shopping. However, there are also lots of pre-prepared foods that are much better, cheaper and healthier when made at home. Next time you're writing your shopping list, take a look at this handy make it, don't buy it list and skip past these products at the store.

Salsa Supermarket salsas are often bland as well as loaded with salt and preservatives. Like guacamole, you only need a few ingredients to make at home. Finely chop tomatoes, onion, cilantro and jalapeños, and season with lime juice and salt.

Tomato sauce You'll find that shop-bought pasta sauces, especially tomato sauce, contain a lot of sugar and salt to control the acidity. Happily, making your own is really simple. The secret to the perfect sauce lies in a long and slow simmer that allows any herbs and aromatics to infuse and for the tomatoes' natural acidity to mellow (you may need to add a small pinch of sugar). Once ready, it can act as a great base for tomato soup or a Bolognese. It also freezes well so you can always have fresh tomato sauce to hand.

Hummus Making hummus at home couldn't be any easier and it's also cheaper than buying it pre-made. All you need is canned chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, tahini, water and olive oil. Combine all these ingredients in a food processor and mix until smooth. For an optional final flourish, serve it topped with a few whole chickpeas and a light dusting of paprika.

Baked beans Baked beans are much loved across the world but the tinned stuff, although convenient, is loaded with salt and sugar. When making your own, you'll get a much tastier dish with more complex flavours – the pucker of vinegar, the rich sweetness of brown sugar and the heat of mustard.

Chlli Oil Wonderful drizzled over pizza, pasta and salad, chili oil should be in everyone's kitchen cupboard. Although the offering of infused oils at the supermarket is vast, there's nothing like making your own to match how strong a flavor you like or to give as a gift.

Peanut Butter Incredibly easy to make, peanut butter takes no longer than five minutes in the food processor and can be stored in the fridge for several weeks or at room temperature if you know you'll go through it fast enough. To make a jar, blitz 400g/14oz of dry roasted peanuts for around five minutes until they reach a smooth, creamy texture. Add in a couple of teaspoons of groundnut or peanut oil, whizz again, then stir in a sprinkling of salt to balance the flavour.

Pesto There's nothing like stirring homemade pesto into pasta, mixing it in with fluffy gnocchi or topping a fresh tomato salad. Homemade pesto is much more fragrant and flavoursome than ready-made jars and also contains a lot less preservatives. You can make your own pesto in less than 15 minutes by combining pine nuts, Parmesan, basil, olive oil and garlic.

in bigger batches and use as a base for nourishing homemade broth.

Granola Vegetable stock A great way to cut your food waste and avoid buying overly salty stock cubes is using vegetables scraps for stock. Use an ice cube tray to freeze the stock, ready to be added to sauces and risotto or freeze

Shop-bought granola can be incredibly sugary even though it's branded as a healthy breakfast option. It's a lot easier making your own granola at home and you can control what goes into the mix. Roast oats, nuts, seeds and

coconut flakes with coconut oil, a drizzle of honey or maple syrup and cinnamon, and combine with your favourite dried fruit. It'll keep for a month if stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

Energy bars Similarly to granola, ready-made energy bars are usually laced with sugar so you're much better off baking a batch. This recipe can easily be adapted to include your favourite dried fruit, nuts and seeds, and you could also add a drizzle of melted dark chocolate or yogurt over the top.

Croutons There's no need to get rid of stale bread – make homemade salad croutons which are much nicer and tastier than ready-made alternatives anyway. Control the flavourings and salt content by seasoning the chopped bread pieces yourself, give them a light toast in a dry pan and add to salad immediately. Homemade croutons are much softer than shop-bought ones and will be great at absorbing the flavours of the salad dressing.

Garlic bread It's hard to resist warm, buttery garlic bread and it's best with a little homemade magic. Make sure you add enough garlic and a generous sprinkling of salt to your butter, and be liberal with it when slathering on the baguette. Once ready, bake for 15 minutes at 400ºF/200ºC/gas mark 6 until the crust is crispy, and the butter has melted and

seeped into the bread.

Salad dressing Generally, making your own salad dressing doesn't take more than a couple of minutes and will taste much better than the ready-made alternatives filled with additives and stabilizers. Best of all, most will keep in the fridge to have on standby.

Nut spread Nutella and other jarred nut spreads are not only extremely loaded with sugar, many are also made with palm oil which is bad for the environment. A homemade version is much healthier and tastier. You'll find most of the ingredients in your store cupboard already, like mild vegetable oil, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract and salt. Combine these with lightly roasted hazelnuts and milk chocolate, and you've got yourself a tasty spread.

Lemonade Absolutely nothing compares to homemade old-fashioned lemonade. With a lot less sugar than shop-bought bottles and no preservatives, the homemade version is also healthier.

Iced Tea Iced tea is one of the most refreshing drinks on a hot summer's day. Next time you fancy a refreshing glass, combine a tea bag per every cup of boiling water and brew for five minutes with a few strips of lemon peel. Remove the bags and chill the tea until ready to serve over ice with slices of lemon.

How to pick the best water melon Brussels sprouts are no longer the 'most disliked' food For years Brussels sprouts have been hidden under mash potatoes and shoved to the sides of plates. Fussy eaters have done everything they can to avoid eating the spherical green vegetables. But according to new research, sprouts are no longer the UK's most disliked food - and they aren't even in the top three anymore. Meal kit provider HelloFresh has revealed that a new food has taken the crown as the number one most hated by Brits - and that's olives. This is followed closely by gherkins and seafood such as prawns. Brussels sprouts came in the fourth spot, while tuna was fifth and mushrooms were sixth. Also in the top 10 most disliked were raisins, fish, chicken on the bone and red meat. Surprisingly, coriander, which many people believe

has a soap-like flavour, did not make it into the top 10, but instead came in at number 11. HelloFresh's research also found that the average child refuses to eat two meals per week, but they might not be the fussiest people in the house. This is because of the 2,000 adults polled, only one in 10 said they were happy to eat whatever was put in front of them. As many as half also admitted they'd write off certain foods before they'd even tried them. Moreover nearly half of those polled said food was going to waste because their partner wouldn't eat what they'd cooked for them. And despite four in 10 Brits saying they feel embarrassed about their eating habits, three in

five confessed to asking for something on the menu at a friend's house or restaurant to be changed/removed. As a result of the study, HelloFresh wants to encourage people to discover new foods and give ingredients they dislike another go. Andre Dupin, Head Chef at HelloFresh UK, said: "Dinner time should be an opportunity to expand food horizons, however our study shows half of adults completely disregard foods they don't like and won't give them a second chance. "Often, people dislike the way something is cooked and will enjoy the same ingredient served in a different way. For example people might enjoy roasted vegetables but dislike boiled vegetables."

There’s nothing like digging face first (or with knife and fork if you’re feeling fancy) into a giant slice of watermelon on a hot summer day. A good ol’ wedge of watermelon — straight from the fridge, all juicy, sweet and crisp — can be a serious thirst quencher when the sun is high in the sky and eating anything that’s not ice-cold is out of the question. Unfortunately, it is possible to end up with a less-than-perfect watermelon. If you do, there are great ways to use it up — watermelon sorbet or watermelon frosé, for example, will certainly make it disappear in a flash. But the best thing to do is go to your favourite grocery store armed with the knowledge that will ensure you buy a perfectly ripe melon in the first place. So here’s what you need to know:

Go for uniformity. Avoid any watermelons that look lumpy, dented or generally irregular. You want to choose one that is firm with no bruises, soft spots or damaged areas. Pick it up. A ripe watermelon will feel heavier than one that is less ripe. This extra weight is a great indicator that it is full of water (not dry and flavorless). Compare different watermelons that are roughly the same size and select the heaviest one — it will also be the ripest! Find the field spot. This is the yellow spot that you will see on one side of the watermelon. It indicates where the melon sat on the ground as it was growing and ripening. The yellower the spot is, the riper the watermelon is going to be. Definitely avoid a watermelon whose field spot is very pale,

white or not there at all — this means that is was picked far too early and is not at all ripe. Give it a knock. This is a pretty well-known technique than many watermelon lovers swear by. Simply knock on your selected melon with your knuckles and take note of how it sounds. A deep, dull sound indicates that the fruit is not quite ripe; a deep, hollow sound, however, is just what you are listening for. These tips will help you source a perfect watermelon to enjoy whenever a craving strikes. Never succumb to a subpar piece of watermelon again; instead, browse the fruit section with savvy, and always buy whole fruit rather than cut — that’s just one of the secrets supermarkets don’t want you to know.

Coco Pops used to make beer How to avoid heatstroke when Spain starts to sizzle As temperatures continue to soar, it’s important to protect yourself from heatstroke, a condition which is entirely predictable and preventable. Here are some top tips for staying safe during hot weather.

Protect against sunburn

For the past seven months Seven Bros craft brewery in Manchester. has been using breakfast cereal to make beer. The aim of the venture is nobler than the inevitable beer for breakfast jokes might suggest: namely, to address even in a small way, the global issue of food waste and its effect on climate change. Last year, Seven Bros. became partners with the U.S. cereal manufacturer Kellogg's to create Throw Away IPA, a smooth, mellow beer made from Corn Flakes that had fallen short of quality-control standards at the company's production facility in Manchester. In June, the brewery released two more beers made with Kellogg's cereals: a pale ale from Rice Krispies and a dark stout that owes its chocolate flavour to Coco Pops.

In the past, the Kellogg's factory sent more than 5,000 tons of wasted flakes a year to local farms, where the cereal would be fed to livestock, according to Kate Prince, the company's United Kingdom social responsibility manager. Now, a small portion of that cereal goes to Seven Bros. Kellogg's has begun talks with a local bakery about sending food waste there, as well. How can we find a home for these perfectly edible flakes that are just slightly overcooked or a bit too big or a bit too small? Prince said. You can use Corn Flakes for all sorts of different things, whether it s the coating on chicken or cheesecake bases. Around the world, a third of the food produced for human consumption each year is lost or wasted, according to the United

Nations. Much of it ends up in landfills, where it releases methane into the atmosphere as it decomposes; in total, food waste accounts for 8 percent of the world's greenhouse-gas emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency has urged food producers to repurpose what would become waste so that humans can consume it. If the food is still safe, it should go to people, said Emily Broad Leib, who runs the Food Law and Policy Clinic at Harvard University. At Seven Bros., the process of converting cereal into beer ultimately boils down to ratios, or how much cereal to add to the grain mix that is combined with hot water in the early stages of the brewing process. From there the process is pretty much the same as making any beer.

Not only is a brighter shade of lobster deeply unattractive and likely to increase your chance of skin cancer but sunburn can greatly contribute to heatstroke. Stay in the shade, protect yourself with a wide-brimmed hat and apply high factor sun cream.

Never sit in a parked car It’s amazing how quickly a parked car can turn into an oven in the Spanish sun, even in just a few minutes. Never leave anyone, and that includes dogs, in a parked car, even if the windows are open a crack and the car is in the shade.

Relax

Get used to it

There is a reason why Spain traditionally comes to a standstill on summer afternoons. Avoid strenuous activity and find a cool spot to rest during the hottest hours of the day. If you can, we recommend a siesta.

Don’t overdo it in the heat until you become acclimatized. Locals may deal with the summer temperatures better than visitors so allow yourself some weeks to adjust and accept that some people from colder climes never do.

Wear loosefitting and lightweight clothing

Drink plenty of fluids

To allow air to circulate around your skin and let your body cool properly avoid tight clothes and synthetic fibres.

Keep cool Whether it’s taking a dip in the nearest swimming pool, sheltering in an air-conditioned shopping mall or lying low in a darkened apartment, there are always sanctuaries at hand to escape the heat.

Unfortunately that doesn't mean sangria or cerveza. Staying hydrated will help your body sweat to maintain a normal body temperature, so always have a bottle of water at hand.

Be careful Age, medical conditions and fitness levels can all have an impact on how you deal with the heat. And remember that certain medications or medical conditions can increase the risk of heat-related problems. If you feel really ill, seek medical advice.

Processionary Caterpillars invade Europe

Pet owners in Spain are by now well aware of the dangers of the pine processionary caterpillar. Its cousin, the oak processionary caterpillar, is becoming a major problem across Europe with authorities in Germany and the Netherlands battling infestations of the creature which, like its Spanish counterpart, can trigger allergic reactions and skin irritation with its tiny toxic hairs. The spread of the species throughout Europe is being blamed on a mild winter and warm Spring. Recently in Louvain, Belgium, firefighters had to destroy nests of the invasive species before a rock concert. Germany's western Ruhr region is densely populated and among the worst affected by the caterpillars. Some schools and parks have been closed to allow specialists to attack the nests in oak trees. The caterpillars - measuring 23cm in length - march in long processions to the treetops at

night. One mature caterpillar has up to 700,000 hairs, which can be spread by the wind. Recently, the Fredenbaumpark in Dortmund was closed for three weeks, as nearly 500 trees were found to be infested there, broadcaster Deutschlandfunk reported. "The oak processionary infestation this year is very intensive - much more than last year," said the park's manager Frank Dartsch. Special teams there and elsewhere have donned protective gear and used firefighters' lifts to reach the treetops, where they have attacked nests with blowtorches or big vacuum cleaners. In the Netherlands, infestations have also increased compared with 2018, with the oak-rich provinces of NoordBrabant, Drenthe and Overijssel especially affected. A video of an elderly woman attacking the caterpillars with a

heat gun in the city of Enschede went viral. Vasthi Alonso-Chavez, a specialist at Rothamsted Research in the UK, told the media that two factors were probably responsible for the northward infestation: the trade in oak plants and a warming climate. Broadcaster RTL says the caterpillars have spread all over Luxembourg, a heavily forested country. The Luxembourg City authorities have issued a health warning, as the caterpillars are in the city too. The caterpillars are also infesting the densely wooded French island of Corsica. They were a problem in parts of England last year. Alonso-Chavez says there are established populations mainly in London and surrounding areas. The pest was first identified in London in 2006, she says, and probably arrived as eggs on imported oak plants.

Alcohol and brain health A new study found that people, especially women, who give up alcohol improve their mental health and reach a level of wellbeing similar to those who do not consume intoxicating drinks. The recent study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, claimed that adults who abstain or give up alcohol attain better mental health and wellbeing than those who occasionally and frequently drink. According to co-author Dr. Michael Ni, their findings serve as evidence that proves moderate drinking as a part of a healthy diet is not advisable. A previous study published in the Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research journal recommended that older adults who occasionally drink alcoholic beverages may live longer than non-drinkers. Another study published in The Lancet argued that moderate drinking increases a person’s risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, the findings of these studies could not clearly establish that people who drink moderately are healthier than those who abstain from drinking. Thus, Ni and his team addressed the uncertainty showcased in the previous studies to shed light on the effects of drinking alcohol on a person’s health. The recent study analyzed 10,386 participants via the FAMILY

Cohort study at Hong Kong University. All of the subjects were either moderate drinkers, frequent drinkers and nondrinkers. Some of them were categorized as persistent, formerly persistent and newbie drinkers. Those who were labelled as moderate drinkers minimized their drinking to 14 drinks of pure alcohol per week for men and seven drinks less for women. The research team then examined the correlation between alcohol drinking patterns to the participants’ mental well-being from 2009 to 2013. They also compared the results of their observations with those of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. The latter had a different set of participants but provided similar standards that related to the study’s objectives.

The researchers found that people who never drank alcoholic beverages had the greatest level of mental well-being at baseline. Those who quit drinking, especially the female participants, experienced a significant improvement in their mental health, as well. Ni and his team then suggested that quitting drinking could help improve health-related quality of life such as improving mental well-being. He added that global alcohol consumption continues to rise and that necessary and effective strategies must be employed to cut the trend as a way to promote the mental health and well-being of drinkers. Ni also claimed that their findings defeat prior studies’ claims that recommending moderate drinking of alcohol as part of a healthy diet promotes better health.

Newcastle United close to appointing "one of their own" Sunderland raise an eyebrow Mike Ashley thought to be tempting Steve Bruce with a staff discount of 50% off at Sports Direct

DEAR

READER,

Unless, of course, we take a look at the latest from Newcastle United. They seem to have managed to

that's another

week of the close season we can tick off and we are officially in what we like to call pre-season. Exciting stuff, no? Far more exciting than what has actually happened in the last seven footballing days, I can assure you. As I scan through the news from the last week, I am scrabbling around to come up with anything that is (a) remotely amusing and (b) interesting enough to talk about to keep you here just that little bit longer. But, I have

dodge the Joey Barton bullet and Mike Ashley has decided to push the boat to it's fullest capacity with his choice of next manager - step forward ex-Sunderland manager (even though he is a true Geordie) Steve Bruce! Better still, Bruce isn't even Ashley's first-choice given that he spent 24 hours begging Big Sham to forgive him for sacking him all those years ago and return to St James' Park. Needless to say, Allafarce wasn't too keen on the idea. One of the reasons Ashley is hot for Brucey is not because of his actual managerial acumen, his new svelt-ish figure or the fact that he could loosely

claim he is 'one of their own'. Oh no. It's because Michael believed he could get him out of Hillsborough for £1m leading to an official approach to Wednesday. And you know where this is going - Wednesday aren't keen on letting Bruce go for such a measly sum. After all, they are not Army and Navy, or HMV. Peter Crouch has officially announced his retirement from football as opposed to unofficially announcing it back in January when he signed for Burnley. No, honestly - he was at Burnley at the end of last season. Crouch has an England record that Danny Welbeck can only dream of. He is hated in Trinidad and Tobago yet loved at most of the English grounds he has, er, graced over the last 19 years or so. 100 Premier League goals, pulling Abby Clancy and having an award-winning podcast are hardly likely to have been believable to Crouchy when Spurs loaned him out to Dulwich Hamlet as they didn't think he was much good. Manchester United don't have to sell anyone, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - but boy would they like to. Top of that list right now, and there is some competition, is Romelu Lukaku who is wanted by Antonio Conte at

Inter. The only issue is that of the price. United value him at X. Inter value him at X minus £13.5m. To be fair, whatever X is, I reckon Inter are right - even if X is £13.5m. Tottenham Hotspur have really got the taste for signing actual footballers now and there's every chance they are going to follow up the signing of N'Dombele by gazumping their neighbours for defender William Saliba. Arsenal wanted the Frenchman for £30m with a view to then loaning him back to his club - now, considering that Arsenal are believed to only have a transfer kitty of £40m this summer and need some serious signings to be made to have any hope of being in the top six (let alone top four) this doesn't sound like the wisest move. That said, Ed Woodward is nodding his head in approval. Arsenal really do need defenders, especially given the fact that their skipper Laurent Koscielny has gone on strike and refused to travel to the USA for Arsenal's pre-season tour. I can't say I blame him, I'm sick of those moneyorientated pre-season tours too. Kos wants to move back to France with Lyon believed to be favourites to sign him providing Arsenal rip the last year on his contract and let him go for nothing. And, knowing Arsenal at moment, it'll probably happen.

the

Don't panic though, Gooners - you've still got Carl Jenkinson and Rob Holding.

Your week in sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com Folks, shall we talk about the cricket? Or the tennis? Or the cricket? Or shall we talk about the tennis? Spoiler - if you are here to read about Lewis Hamilton winning the British Grand Prix for a record sixth time, you’ve chosen the wrong day. Apologies. It would be disrespectful to Ben Stokes not to head over to Lords, really. And, you don’t want to disrespect Ben, allegedly. The Kiwi-born all-rounder produced one of the great knocks to navigate England through very troubled waters chasing 242 to win in the Cricket World Cup Final. In a crazy final over (and no, we are not talking about the super over here) Stokes smashed an incredible six before accidentally deflecting a shy at his stumps over the boundary for what added up to another six runs. At the end of that over, Stokes had got the scores level - somehow. And that meant someone at Sky was furiously typing away. The world needed a “Super Over Explainer” and they needed it now. Put simply, both England and New Zealand got one final over to slog their little hearts out with the bat and the team with the most runs at the end of their six balls each got to call themselves World Cup winners. Stokes got pushed down the Lord's stairs one final time and managed to put on 15 with Jos Buttler - meaning New Zealand had to find a way to smash Jofra Archer around the park, something they’d struggled to do in their 50 overs. Archer looked a wonderful mix of calm, then worried, then scared, then calm, then

confident, then more confident then absolutely damn well jubilant as he sunk to his knees (alone, as the rest of the side legged it towards Buttler who had removed the bails for the run out making England champions). Somehow, in one of the craziest finishes at any level of cricket - let alone the biggest stage in the ODI game - England had done it. There was a certain irony that after four years of looking to play absolutely noholds barred care-free attacking cricket that England won the final having to grind out a calculated run chase before a last over dash. Archer, who wasn’t even guaranteed a place in the squad just weeks before the tournament began, leaves a hero who has to play in the Ashes. Actually, can we pick them all in the Ashes? That would be a lot of fun. And Eoin Morgan, best captain England have ever had. Ben Stokes - that 84 not out in those circumstances considering the 18 months he has had (plus that catch) has to be his Botham moment. New Zealand played their part (especially by beating India and sending the ICC finance department into a tailspin) but it just felt that England had to win it in such dramatic circumstances. And, they can’t even claim it was the most dramatic sporting event of the day. Over in SW19 two of the greatest tennis

players to have ever graced the courts went toe-to-toe in a Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles Final that made history. For the first time ever, a Wimbledon final was decided by a fifth set tie-break a new rule brought in to stop matches taking three days as we’ve seen in the last decade or so. 53-year-old great Roger Federer was clearly thankful for the fact that the match only had to last five hours because it looked like it could still be going on come Monday lunchtime so closely matched were here and the number one seed Novak Djovokic. The Serb actually only won his three sets on tie-breaks with R-Fed taking his one and three, so I’m not sure that should really count - but it was one of the truly great Wimbledon finals, it’s length providing the perfect antidote to the quickfire match won the previous day by Simone Halep, seeing off Serena Williams in just over an hour. Oh, and Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix - but as it wasn’t in the final lap, peddling very hard in the pouring rain with a shopping bag in his windscreen it cannot even come close to the two main events of Sunday.

Quesada Bowls Club Report This week Quesada Blenheims put up a very strong fight in their match against the current league leaders San Miguel Moors. Unfortunately, although the shots were very close - San Miguel 88 to Blenheims 80 shots - the Blenheims only won on one rink so the points were 10-2 in favour of San Miguel Moors. This means the points difference between the Blenheims in 3rd place in the league and San Luis Wellingtons in second place has been extended with the Blenheims 11 points behind with just one match left to play next week. In contrast Quesada Lancasters played a very feisty match against San Miguel Christians winning on 3 of the rinks. Unfortunately San Miguel won the shots 97-90 so the overall result was a draw - 6 points each. Meanwhile in the South Alicante Summer knock out competition Quesada's hopes are pinned on Peter Morgan who has made it through to the third round of the Mens Singles, which will be played by 21st July. Good luck Peter! Dee Stephenson

Las Ramblas Golf Society Our week started with the ever popular 3-2-1 Dusty Bin. In second spot with 87 points were myself, Geoff Biggerstaff, Bryan Neal and Petina Murray. Taking the honours, with 90 points were Dave Pulling, Mick Brentnall, Nigel Price and Marleen Billen. Both Dave and Mick were in the record scoring team for this competition (with 96 points) back in 2014. Wednesday’s Stableford competitionhad the twist of being a ‘Joker’. Each player nominated two holes before starting where the points scored were doubled. Reg Akehurst was obviously still enjoying a sugar high from all that 90th birthday cake he ate last week as he romped home with a very impressive 45 points. (This weeks ‘photo of a very dapper looking man, is the world renowned horse trainer, Reg, taken when he was in his sixties). With 42 points (which I thought would be enough!) I managed 2nd place and Olga Douglas took bronze with 41, on countback from Richard Connock. Four 2’s today with Harry Howard making two of them! The others went to Dave Pulling and Pete Dunn. Friday and it was a 2 ball better ball, with every player being restricted to just 5 clubs and a putter. Having just missed out a couple of days ago I was very pleased to being in the winning team, alongside Liz Robertson, with 46 points. A very close second, with 45, were Richard Connock and Marleen Billen. So, all in all good week for me and a few beer tokens in the bank! Finally, golfer says to caddy, ‘You’ve got to be the worst caddy in the world.’ Caddy replies, ‘I don’t think so. That would be too much of a coincidence.’ Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

RODS & REELS This is our 13th and penultimate round of the Spring Championship fished on the 10th July at the Embalsa de Argos. The weather today was just as hot as yesterday, but there was a strong brisk wind blowing and the water level has dropped about 6 inches and the colour has gone out of it. In top spot was Richard King with 42.800kgs, in second place with 33.360kgs was Terry Screen and in third was Bryan Elliott with 22.380kgs.

During the match we had a visit from the Soprona who checked our licences and Federation cards and all was well and they then left us to continue the match 1st Richard King with 42.800kgs fishing the feeder using pellet 2nd Terry Screen with 33.360kgs fishing the pole using paste 3rd Bryan Elliott with 22.380kgs fishing the feeder up in the water using paste There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423

What a difference a week makes. Last time out a La Manga we had a full field plus guests but only 29 members signed up to play Alicante this week and of those, two were posted as MIA (Missing In Alicante) after failing to make the start line. We assume Gerald and Noel are in the holding pattern at El Plantio awaiting our arrival there next week. Which is a shame, as they missed the chance to play a track in pleasingly good shape for the time of year and in temperatures which have yet to reach their blistering summer peak. Those who did find the course - with or without the aid of Google Maps or a satnav - generally took good advantage of the layout and a couple absolutely revelled in it. In Bronze, Neil Oliver took third with 32 points, followed in second place by Alan Macdonald with 34 points. The division winner for the second week in a row, and with an excellent tally of 41 points was Ralph Tilbrook. Well played, sir. Silver division was a closer run affair with Norman Cahill nipping in to third on countback with 33 points. Kyrre Skarsmoen scored one better to secure second, leaving Chris Wren to shine in the top spot with a very tidy 36 points. One 3-ball in Gold succeeded in snaffling an award each, which was pretty good going. John Osborne and Phil de Lacy finished third and second respectively with 33 and 34 points. At the other end

of the scoreboard, Mike Greatorex propped up the field with a few less but after a 12-week layoff from the game was oddly happy to leave with the Abacus winner’s wine. However, at the top of the pile and richly deserving a paragraph all to himself, Dave Allardice was our other consecutive week winner with an outstanding score of 42 points. Not only did he trounce the division and leave Ralph wondering how his 41 points still wasn’t enough to snag the overall bragging rights, Dave also took three of the five Nearest the Pin prizes awarded and capped that by making the birdie putt on all three greens. It’s probably fair to assume he won’t be playing off 13 next time out! The other nearies went to John Osborne and Kyrre Skarsmoen and we thank our sponsors for the NTPs and the Abacus, Mick from the Property Shop and Mike from Mike’s IPTV for providing the prizes. Next week we’re at El Plantio and there are still places on the start sheet. Noel and Gerald might still be there - we hope - but if you’re unsure how to find it, try this link, fellas: https://goo.gl/maps/brZv5awhAdXXLda86 To find out more visit our website www.smgs.org or give our Captain, Tony Smal, a call on 639129223. Following El Plantio, we’re at Vistabella and Hacienda Riquelme and we would welcome guests at each event.
