Orihuela government formed at last The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the spokesperson for Ciudadanos (the Citizens Party) José Aix, have finally reached an agreement to form an absolute majority government for the next four years in the municipality of

Orihuela . The Mayor said: “After many conversations a meeting point has been reached, which was always our only objective and that will allow us another four years of progress and development for our municipality.” The Mayor highlighted the commitment to complete the Citizen

Participation Regulation that was not fully developed in the last legislature, complete the list of municipal jobs, as well as work on solving the problems that exist in respect to of municipal planning with the advance in the General Urban Planning Scheme. Another issue that will be addressed is the carrying out of actions that facilitate

the revitalisation and regeneration of the historic centre of Orihuela, as well as promoting the municipality internationally and as a tourist destination. "We must continue to pay special attention to the Urban Solid Waste Collection Service optimising resources in order to achieve a clean Orihuela with good services in something which is so basic and so essential," said Bascuñana. La Mata drowning A 75-year-old man has drowned on La Mata beach this week. A Red Cross maritime rescue vessel found the body floating after the alarm was raised by family member. The man’s family said he had gone missing but, finding his belongings on the beach, guessed he must be in the water. The body was found shortly after 8.30pm on Wednesday. The man’s wife, having searched for him for an hour and a half, alerted Local Police. Three hours after his disappearance, the Emergency Coordination Center (CICU) alerted the patrol of the Guardia Civil and Maritime Rescue, who have found the swimmer shortly after arriving in the area – just off the coast at Avenida de los Europeos. The man is a native of Bilbao who has been staying in Torrevieja for years. Meanwhile, a 70 year old man died in Santa Pola. According to sources at the Emergency Coordination Center (CICU) the man was pulled, unconscious, from the water on Thursday evening shortly after 8pm. A SAMU ambulance unit was sent to the beach, but the medical team could only confirm the man’s death.

The Mayor also raised the issue of connection and infrastructure, saying these had special relevance in order to ensure the government is able to address the Emergency Services Centre for the Coast, ‘which the Generalitat did not want to face’. He continued: “This government will continue to give absolute priority to active social policies and emphasising those sectors with the highest risk of exclusion, promoting employment. Mobility will be an area with special attention, as well as the pedestrianising of different areas such as the historic centre, along with systems such as bike lanes and greenways. There will also be a series of major projects to address largescale projects.” The Mayor explained that a ‘committee will be created through which all areas will be monitored with the objective that the Orihuela government is managed in a coordinated manner’. Within the agreements already detailed, the Mayor’s office will be maintained by the Popular Party, the Local Government Board will consist of nine members, five for the PP (Emilio

Bascuñana, Rafael Almagro, SabinaGoretti Galindo, Víctor Valverde and Mariola Rocamora ), and four for Ciudadanos (José Aix, Luisa Boné, Mar Ezcurra and Ángel Noguera), and the role of Spokesperson of the Governing Board will be undertaken by the spokesperson for Ciudadanos. Ciudadanos will maintain the areas it held during the last legislature such as: Infrastructure and Services, Culture and Youth and Beaches. This includes: Education and Citizen Security, Human Resources and Internal Regime, and Urban Planning and Territory. The Mayor clarified: “The rest of the areas are maintained by the Popular Party and soon I will proceed to delegate the powers and reorganise them based on this new distribution.” José Aix concluded that this agreement comes at the right time, "we have detected what worked and also those aspects that we can improve upon” and added that Ciudadanos “wants to offer people a stable government for the next four years, developing large projects and operating in a coordinated manner."

Family of Brit who broke neck blame Benidorm waterpark The family of a British tourist who broke his neck on a Benidorm waterslide have blasted Aqualandia’s denial of responsibility. Commenting on a social media, Amy Llambias said the water park company’s attempts to shirk responsibility were ‘not true’. She refuted the company’s claims that David’s family and friends had confirmed he had ‘ignored’ the lifeguard. Llambias – understood to be a cousin of injured 23-year-old David Briffaut – said the family are now expecting a ‘full investigation into the incident’. It comes after an Aqualandia spokesperson told media that the

water park is ‘not responsible for the accident’ that occurred on 8th July. “We have video footage which plainly shows how the 23-yearold man did not follow the guidelines for Splash,” the spokesperson said. “Our lifeguard team informed him of the rules of the ride and he didn’t obey them. Even the family and friends confirmed this fact. “You can see in the photos of other press articles, David is in the wrong position whereas the girl who is next to him is in the right one.” David fractured two vertebrae in his neck and suffered a severe spinal cord injury after riding the

Splash waterslide. He was placed on life support in an Alicante hospital and was heavily sedated before his parents, Lorraine and Stephan, flew from Benfleet, Essex, to be by his side. David is understood to have undergone a tracheotomy last week and is coming off sedation. He is now ‘breathing independently’ and will soon be ‘strong and stable enough’ to come home. The family are now asking witnesses to come forwards to corroborate their version of events. They thanked the ‘love’ and ‘support’ of the public as their 75,000 pound fundraiser is just 1,000 pounds shy of reaching its target.

Ecstacy warning British party goers have been warned of ecstasy pills ‘laced with rat poison’ being sold in Mallorca after a teenage girl, 19, was killed. Milagros Alanis Moyana had taken ill at a music festival in Son Fusteret, Palma and died at a Barcelona hospital. Her heartbroken family have claimed she died from a pill laced with rat poison,.

Paulo said: “I would love to know who sold my little girl this poison so I could put a bullet in his head. She sent us a video of her dancing on Instagram before she was rushed to hospital and that is the last footage I have of her alive. “It’s really hard to say this but when I was with her I had to look at one of one her tattoos to recognise her because she didn’t

look like the same girl.” British revellers have been warned by an anti-drugs group in Ibiza to watch out for the distinctive pill. The warning said: “Some pills are doing the rounds in Palma that have rat’s poison in them. “A girl aged 19 has died from taking one after agonising for two days. It was a small, yellow pill with a skull on the front.”

BITE SIZE Torrevieja cracks NEWS: down on ‘blanket men’ Continued from page 3 "the conciliatory spirit" of the head of the group , Enrique Pizana, and the deputy, Estela Prieto. Alarcón expressed his satisfaction for the “reconsideration” of the volunteers to continue working for people of Torrevieja, and hopes that they can once again be essential in the security and control of the numerous events which are organized in Torrevieja.

RENFE launches 4 x 100 euro offer Rail company RENFE has launched its 4 x 100 euro offer, giving passengers the chance to travel from Alicante to Madrid on the high speed AVE train for just €25 during the month of August. Tickets on offer have a travel date from August 1st to 31st and the four must be purchased together to avail of the special price. Passengers can buy tickets through the Renfe website www.renfe.com, train station ticket booths, face-toface travel agencies, by phone and at self service ticket machines at train stations. Renfe offers 18 daily AVE services, nine each way, between Alicante and the capital. Since its launch, the number of travellers has been increasing progressively.

Don’t invest, says opposition The opposition has asked the PP not to invest another 80,000 euros in the Municipal Theatre if there is no opening license. The issue was raised at July’s plenary session of the town hall when representatives of opposition parties, PSOE, Los Verdes and Sueña Torrevieja asked the mayor why he wants to invest 80,000 euros in the renovation of the Municipal Theatre if he is not sure that the opening license is going to be granted. Currently the stumbling block is the architect's refusal to sign the final ‘end of work’ documents. Mayor Eduardo Dolón reiterated that the opening of this municipal facility is his priority. The plenary session was also used to question the effectiveness and legality of the much publicised ‘shock cleaning plan’ undertaken in recent weeks by the government team. Councillor Carmen Gómez defended the plan, saying Torrevieja "is now cleaner." Councillor for Los Verdes, Israel Muñoz, said that he could not find information relating to a contract for the plan, which came in at a cost of €117,000.

Donation in memory of Victor On Wednesday 31 July at 6.00pm a special event will take place in GILLY's Bar & El Capitan in Lago Jardin 2. The Community who live in the area have arranged a collection in two bars, Gilly's Bar and El Capitan, in memory of one of their friends Victor Dellar. Victor had lived in the area for some time, and had been a Volunteer at Reach Out Extienda La Mano for a number of years where he was an integral part of the Families Team.

Torrevieja’s Councillor for Economic Development Rosario Martínez, alongside Councillor for Local Police Federico Alarcón presented a new initiative by the town hall which is being launched as part of an existing campaign to combat the trade in counterfeit goods. The campaign, entitled ‘Reject the fakes, they are not what they seem”, has actually been in place for a number of months and aims to combat unauthorised street sellers – known in the town as ‘looky looky men’ or more recently ‘blanket men’ given their wares are laid out on blankets in order to facilitate a quick exit should the police arrive. Councillor Martínez said at this week’s press conference that we are all – young and old – aware to some degree of the damage that the purchase of counterfeit products does to local commerce. Federico Alarcón explained that the new operation that has been launched is a joint plan involving the Local Police, the GRO and the Guardia Civil. By working together these three security force will divide and patrol the

areas in which illegal sellers are distributed throughout the coast of Torrevieja and La Mata. Meanwhile, in a similar clampdown operation, local police in Orihuela Costa swooped on illegal traders peddling their wares on Cabo Roig strip on Thursday evening. Officers from the Guardia Civil Rapid Reaction Force hit the area in the early evening. In a show of strength, police units on the ground were supported by a police helicopter ready to spot and round up any fast-footed sellers. The police moved the traders into an area near to the foot bridge whilst they inspected their goods and presumably checked identification. A small number of arrests were made and counterfeit goods confiscated. Officers maintained a police presence until around 10pm but, as soon as they retreated the sellers moved back in. After months of protesting about the situation, local business owners have been encouraged by the police action and hope they maintain a presence until the traders give up and move away.

domestic squalor and social withdrawal. The contract is now being put out to tender to companies specialising in the deep cleaning of these problem properties. Sufferers of Diogenes syndrome can accumulate tons of waste and often put their own health, and that of their neighbours, at risk. The town hall has to step in and clean several such properties every year and as such a new four year contract was approved this week. Bidding companies must be specially prepared to address ‘extreme cleaning’ in these properties.

Bulletproof vests, at last After more than three years of bureaucratic delays, Torrevieja’s local police will at last take possession of 140 bullet proof vests. The contract for the supply of this vital equipment was awarded this week to a Zaragoza based company, Fedur, at a cost of €109,000 including tax. Under a separate contract, officers will now also be able to request new uniforms, having been unable to update their current lot for the last four years. A contract was awarded to Manufacturados Redován and works out at 40% cheaper than the usual annual cost. Other contracts also being tied up are the repainting of urban signage in the town, a new fire system for the sports palace and a new walkway for swimmers at San Roque.

Calls for reduced toll for residents The leaders of Orihuela and Torrevieja have called for a reduced toll to be available to residents on the AP-7 motorway in order to ease congestion on the N-332. The mayors of Torrevieja and Orihuela, Eduardo Dolón and Emilio Bascuñana, have called on the Ministry of Development and the management company of the A-7 motorway to bring in a ‘soft toll’ which they believe would reduce heavy traffic on the N-332, which runs parallel to the motorway between Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada. The request was revealed at the official opening of Avenida Dénia, a new section of road which links the CV-95 with the interior urbanisations of Orihuela Costa and, it is hoped, will also ease congestion along the usual route from Torrevieja to the south. Both mayors were present for the opening of the new road and used the opportunity to call for a reduction in toll fees to residents of the area. Bascuñana said that from a technological point of view it is a completely feasible proposal. The AP-7 motorway, which connects Cartagena with Crevillente (where it connects with the A-7), has a unique toll system, which requires drivers to pass through two tolls of 3.95 euros (in high season) located only about ten kilometers from each other: one in Los Montesinos and another in La Zenia. The argument for arranging the tolls in this manner is that drivers pay for the use of the motorway from Crevillente to Los Montesinos or from Cartagena to La Zenia – which does nothing to solve issues for motorists who wish to travel from Crevillente to Orihuela Costa. The consequence of this is that the ‘free’ sections are used by around 20,000 vehicles per day and drivers in the know

then reroute to avoid the tolls. The toll section is used by under 7000 cars per day. It is used almost exclusively by vehicles on long journeys - those from Madrid - and residential tourists with housing on the coast. Although the number of motorists using the toll section of motorway has increased since the financial crisis, the parallel N-332 in Torrevieja serves more than 50,000 vehicles daily and almost 30,000 in Orihuela Costa. The company Ausur was awarded the motorway management contract in November 1998 for fifty years and so, it will continue to manage these tolls until

2048. Local opinion is that Ausur does not want this section of the N-332 to be widened. In 2015, the company lost a Supreme Court appeal against the Ministry of Development in which it claimed that the widening of the N-332 between Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja and between Torrevieja and Guardamar would cost the company €311 million in losses between 2009 and 2048. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón announced at the new road opening this week that, “Once the summer has passed I intend to gather all the mayors of the municipalities of the

Vega Baja region to address all the priority needs and demands we have”. The mayor of Torrevieja highlighted, among many isses, the serious traffic and communication problems of the N332, not only as it passes through Torrevieja but throughout the coastal area of the region, and in the nearby municipalities such as Los Montesinos, Benijófar, Rojales and San Miguel de Salinas. Dolón hopes that all the municipalities of the Vega Baja can come together in an effort to “once and for all", ensure that the needs of the region become a reality in the coming years.

Sanchez fails to form government

Acting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has failed to earn the trust of parliament at a second investiture vote which was held on Thursday. This means that he will not, for now, be able to form a new government. The candidate for the Socialist Party (PSOE) received 124 affirmative votes, 155 against and 67 abstentions. Pedro Sánchez was backed by his own 123 lawmakers and by one representative from a small regional party in Cantabria, the PRC. The Popular Party (PP), Ciudadanos (Citizens), the far-right Vox, Junts per Catalunya, Navarra Suma and Canaries Coalition all voted no. There were abstentions from Unidas Podemos, Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), Compromís, Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and Bildu.

Negotiations between the PSOE and left-wing Unidas Podemos continued right down to the wire, but the two groups were unable to come up with a governing deal. The clock will now start ticking for another potential investiture vote in September, but if that also comes to nothing, Spain will head toward fresh elections in November. It would be the fourth time that Spaniards have been called to the polls to choose a government in four years, and the fifth election held this year alone. Unidas Podemos – a coalition of Podemos and the United Left (IU) – made a last-ditch offer to the PSOE, demanding a deputy prime minister role for social rights and equality, as well as the Health, Labour and Science and Universities ministries. The PSOE was offering the

deputy prime minister spot, as well as Health, Housing and Equality ministries. The main sticking point, according to sources familiar with the negotiation, was the Labour Ministry, which Pablo Iglesias wanted control of. The PSOE rejected this on the basis that the left-wing party is unpopular in some economic sectors. Podemos said that they were told they could not have this ministry because of misgivings by Spain’s biggest employers association, the CEOE. Speaking in Congress on Thursday ahead of the vote, Pedro Sánchez claimed that the “problem was not one of policy, but rather one of the ministries. Iglesias wanted to control the government, 100 percent of government spending, despite being the fourth [most-voted] party [in Congress].” In response, during his five-minute speech, Iglesias asked Pedro Sánchez whether he believed “that you have alluded to us with the respect that a possible partner in government deserves.” He then went on to bemoan the fact that the details of the negotiations between the two parties had been leaked during the talks, before setting out what the party’s demands had been. “Today we made a proposal in which all we wanted were powers, not seats. Powers to raise the minimum wage, to stop health privatizations, for a euthanasia law once and for all, to lower university fees... We haven’t asked for anything else.” Iglesias also made a final offer to Pedro Sánchez during his speech to Congress.

“We will give up on the Labour Ministry if you give us active employment policies.” These policies cover training and career advice for the unemployed, and they are shared between the central and regional governments. At a first vote last Tuesday, Pedro Sánchez received 124 affirmative votes: 123 from his own lawmakers and one from the single representative for a small party from the northern region of Cantabria. This was far short of the 176 he required for an absolute majority. The outcome fuelled expectations that the PSOE and Unidas Podemos would reach a last-minute deal ahead of Thursday’s second round. As late as Thursday morning, however, talks were at

a standstill due to differences over what Cabinet positions should go to the antiausterity party. A precedent in 2016 For Pedro Sánchez, this is the second time that he has submitted to an investiture vote that failed: in March 2016, after Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party (PP) refused to do so because of insufficient parliamentary support, the Socialist leader asked Congress to let him form a government instead. He was voted down in both rounds, with a final result of 131 affirmative votes from his own PSOE, Ciudadanos and the Canaries Coalition. There were 219 negative votes and no abstentions.

Shiro Donate Helmet to Injured Biker When an N332 facebook follower had a crash on his motorbike, he found that his crash helmet was not adequate because it was not certified for use in Spain. A lot of safety critical equipment must be standardised, and carry the appropriate credentials on a label. This standard is much like the British Kite Mark, and is a European scheme to ensure that items such as crash helmets are suitable for the purpose they are intended. When the man had a crash on his motorbike he sustained serious injuries to his head, which may well have been avoided if the helmet he had been wearing at the time had been an approved type. Because of the situation, the N332 group informed international crash

helmet and glove manufacturer Shiro about the situation, and given their commitment to improving road safety, they donated a new crash helmet to the injured rider. Members of N332 went to the rider’s house, along with representatives from Shiro, to present the rider with his new crash helmet, which carries the standard safety code "05". Always check that your equipment, whether it is a crash helmet, gloves, warning triangles, child seat, or anything else that is safety critical, is suitable for use in Spain and carries a homologation code. For more information on driving in Spain, follow the N332 group on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/DrivingSpain/ Mark Nolan

Police move swimmers from ‘salt pier’ Local Police in Torrevieja have taken steps to clear swimmers away from the Poniente lighthouse at the end of the ‘salt pier’ to stop young people jumping into the sea. On Friday last, officers cleared the area of around 30 youngsters who were at the dock at the end of the pier, enjoying the high jump into the sea. This area is supposed to be closed to the public and swimming here is not allowed due to the dangerous conditions. However, it is often used by thrillseekers who use the high platforms to jump into the sea below. Members of the public have managed illicit access to the jumping point since 2015 when works on the promenade began but were never finished. Officials are concerned for the safety of swimmers, given that the people jumping into the sea from a great height and that they do so very near the entrance to the port – an area used by both commercial and recreational vessels. The pier itself forms part of an industrial are used for the transport of salt and water to and from Torrevieja’s desalination plant. The promenade was supposed to have been constructed by Acuamed as ‘compensation’ to the town of Torrevieja for having to host the desalination plant. Works began in 2014 but were since stopped after arguments between the construction company and Acuamed. Only the

final touches such as lighting, furniture and some other elements are needed to finish works, but the area has been fenced off since 2015. The fences were erected at the start of the paseo between Playa Acequión and Los Náufragos. It is very common to see the lightweight fences lying on the ground as they are moved, not only by youngsters who want to jump into the water to swim, but also by residents and dog walkers who want to use the 700m pier as a promenade – despite the lack of safety railings and lack of separation between what would be the new pier and the potentially dangerous salt conveyor belt. Torrevieja police officers have warned in a report to headquarters that access to the

pier is open and uncontrolled. Torrevieja’s Councilor for Security, Federico Alarcón confirmed that the officers restored the fence and secured it with ties. Councillor Alarcón also confirmed that the town hall will contact the company in question to insist it adopts the necessary security measures to ensure that pedestrians and swimmers do not re-access the area. In previous years during summer, Local Police have carried out patrols as part of their maritime surveillance in order to prevent people jumping off the so called ‘salt pier’. According to provincial newspaper Información, Acuamed has ignored the requests by the town hall to ensure safety measures (beyond flimsy provisional fencing) until works are resumed.

There’s no place like home “There’s no place like home” is the title being given to a fundraiser which aims to raise €14,000. The money is needed to bring Anne home to the UK for care after a stroke suffered while visiting Spain. Friends and family are hoping to pay for medical transport for Anne and on researching the cost of an emergency air ambulance, discovered

that the cost can be as much as €14,000. A fundraiser is set to take place on Friday August 9th, from midday until 8pm, at Broadway – Uptown Quesada. The event will feature live music all day from a variety of the area’s top local artists giving their time for free.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Once again Brexit dominated the headlines and the pound; the announcement of Boris Johnson as the new Prime Minister saw a brief rise in sterling. It appears that the market had anticipated the result and were reacting to the elimination of one measure of uncertainty – during the course of the two-month selection process sterling has lost an average of 2.7% to the other major currencies, including two and a quarter US cents and one and two thirds of a euro cent. However, the Brexit question remains and looms large. The National Institute of Economic and Social Research has joined other bodies in warning that a no-deal Brexit would cause a recession but the new PM has refused to take this option off the table. The pound may be heading for more volatility as the reopened Brexit negotiations begin with the EU and the possibility of a no-deal departure looks ever more likely. The CBI's Industrial Trends Survey came in at -34, 19 points below forecast. The report stated that, "optimism fell at the fastest pace since July 2016 – just after the referendum – and investment spending plans weakened again." The market will be watching closely as Boris Johnson begins his first full week in office with a new Cabinet and some major issues to address. EUR It’s been a difficult week for the euro;

Germany's manufacturing sector delivered a 43.1 in the provisional PMIs, the lowest in seven years. Later in the week, the ECB acknowledged the slowing growth and outgoing president Mario Draghi highlighted that the situation is worsening. He confirmed that the ECB will move to boost growth as fears of low inflation grow. This increases the likelihood of a rate cut in September, together with a revival of the ECB’s quantitative easing programme. This is a change of tone from the ECB, that has previously suggested that interest rates would remain on hold and the news meant that the euro lost ground to the US dollar. Incoming president Christine Lagarde will take over from Mario Draghi at the end of October. This clear stance on “the need for a highly accommodative stance of monetary policy for a prolonged period of time,” due to inflation coming in well below the 2% target at 1.3% from the ECB suggests she will be continuing with a similar approach.

Cow found in swimming pool Local Police in a Greater Madrid region town had to rescue a cow who had fallen into a swimming pool and been there for over 24 hours, unbeknown to the property owners. Irene Larroque says she and her mother had left the house in Camorritos – which they use as a weekend retreat – on Saturday night, and got a call from the police on Monday morning.

“They said, 'there's a cow in your swimming pool',” reports Irene, who at first believed the call to be a hoax. We immediately alerted someone we knew who lives nearby, and then sent us a photograph confirming it was true,” she says. The cow's owner had reported her missing two days earlier, after she broke out of her field. It appears she had gone

searching for water and fallen in the pool whilst drinking from it. She had been in the water since Sunday morning. Naturally, she had made a mess of the pool, since she had been unable to avoid answering the call of nature in both its formats in those 24 hours. But the animal herself was in good health and apparently unscathed by her ordeal.

A crane specially designed for rescuing large animals was brought in, and the cow – after being checked over – was released back into the mountain pasture she lives in to join the rest of her herd. The farmer's public liability insurance company has been notified so it can pay the costs of draining, cleaning and refilling the swimming pool and of hiring the crane. We presume they are not amoosed!

Make your rented house a home

When you think about this, it's not surprising to hear that the number of renters has doubled over the last 20 years. Yet this does make decorating a much harder task. You need permission to make decor and furniture changes but most landlords are happy for you to improve their property for free! 1. Wall design Does the thought of magnolia walls leave you feeling cold? Well, there's some good news – stick-on wallpaper and command strips could provide you with a solution you need to try. When you're renting a property, stick-on wallpaper presents you with a great option. Stick-on wallpaper is not only great for jazzing up the decor, but also easy to remove without damaging your walls. As it's also reusable, there's the added benefit of being able to transport it to your new home too. If it's personality you're looking to achieve, command strips could be the order of the day - they don't damage the walls but are strong enough to hold up objects including mirror and picture frames. If the opportunity arises, you should try to position your mirror in such a way

that the light bounces around the room, in the process, making it feel larger. 2. Style it up The easiest and cheapest way to transform a space is by using soft furnishings. When you rent a furnished home, a rug quickly becomes one of your best friends, thanks to its multiple functions. Advantages include covering up an unappealing floor, along with giving your deposit some protection from any accidental spillages that could occur. It can also be moved around to switch up your interior's look too. If you have multiple rugs, you can take this a step further, and try swapping them around, to create a fresh appearance every few months. 3. Furnished fun Your furniture makes a big difference to your interiors, regardless of the type of home you have. If it comes readyfurnished, something as simple as repositioning can still make a big impact, giving your space a new lease of life. By grouping certain furniture with particular accessories, you create 'nooks', before coming up with the final

finishing touches by using something like candles or a floor lantern. On the flip side, if the rental comes unfurnished, it presents you with a great opportunity to get creative. Measure out the different spaces, looking at where your current pieces go, and then indulge in a shopping spree to get exactly what you need. If you find you're on a tight budget, there are still options – this includes flat-pack furniture, re-selling sites and thrift markets. These present you with a great chance to find things that suit a tight budget and time frame. 4. Outdoors in Use Pinterest to inspire you and let the wonders of the great outdoors in. Incorporate some large plants in the corners, and then take them to the next level by adding smaller cacti and succulents on the shelves and mantelpieces. Your houseplants will not only bring a space to life, but the ones that have broad leaves, like, for instance, the peace lily and rubber plant, help to remove toxic compounds from the air, boosting the mood and positivity levels to create a more relaxed zone. 5. Light show Lighting has a huge impact when you're looking to transform your rental. Adding a bold ceiling fixture really does make a big difference as it presents you with the perfect finishing touch for achieving some extra style. When you’re picking one, consider the natural light that you have in your home. Then, make sure you take all of the different options into account – there are so many to pick from.

Millions gear up for global Baby Essence European climate strikes in September SubChampions! Organisers say that it is on course to be the largest global mobilization against climate breakdown. Millions will take part in global climate strikes on the 20th and 27th September, and the “Week for Future” in between. Organisers say that it is on course to be the largest global mobilization against climate breakdown, with over 6000 people in 150 countries pledging to organise events to date. The weeklong movement will surround the UN Climate Summit being held on the 23rd of September in New York, which aims to meet the climate challenge by accelerating actions to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. A video recorded by Greta Thunberg, Bill McKibben and

others calling on people to join the climate strikes was released this week. “It is time for world leaders to wake up to the truth of the climate crisis. By demonstrating people’s power we will make this week a turning point in history. The climate crisis is an emergency. We have to act like it so we will stop our business as usual and show governments what people want: climate justice. This September, millions of us will walk out of homes and workplaces onto the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels.” say school strikers. The range of actions is huge: from people downing tools and walking out of work to join strikes, rallies, music concerts and marches. “This shouldn’t be just the children’s responsibility. Now,

Greta Thunberg: If not us, then who? If not now, then when?

the adults also need to help us. We are calling for them to strike from their work, we need everyone. There is nothing we can’t do, if not you, then who else, if not now, then when?” Greta Thunberg Support for the strikes has been growing with parents, academics, bakers, trade unions, doctors, farmers, caretakers, celebrities, and teachers among those organising for September. Unions across the globe are building solidarity with the school strikers and are now gearing up with inspiring action plans to support the climate strikes. More than 100 Spanish companies and organisations have already backed the strike set to take place on September 27th. They will join climate protesters across the globe in demanding that governments and companies listen to citizens and organizations that demand a new socio-ecological model that does not compromise the survival of life on earth. On the Costa Blanca, many groups will join the climate strike including Plataforma Orihuela Costa which revealed this week that it has sought authority for a gathering and march in Cala Mosca.

10 dancers and their teacher Paris Brumitt from Essence Dance & Fitness travelled, along with their families, to Rome earlier this month. The Torrevieja based group competed in the Great European Finals of Vive Tu Sueño alongside many other talented dancers from countries across Europe. After some sightseeing on the arrival it was time for Baby Essence to take the stage at Auditorium Del Massimo. These young dancers had qualified back in March in Madrid at the national finals, meaning they represented Spain in the European Finals where they placed with an amazing 2nd place and went from being intermediate to advanced level meaning they are now European SubChampions. Paris said, “Words can’t describe how extremely proud I am of them all and the feeling of wining the European title for HipHop, with all the dancers being such a young age, our youngest being now 5 and the oldest 8 - it’s a great achievement to say they qualified and danced in the European finals but to say they are now champions is unbelievable!” Paris continued, “The whole team work extremely hard and all I can say is hard work sure pays off, there’s nothing better than seeing all their little faces light up on that stage

when they dance and to see them all having the time of their lives doing something they all love, but when they get announced winners it’s incredible!” “It has been a great season with levels and competitions getting higher and harder but everyone keeps working hard and upping their game and it’s safe to say this has been one of our best years and as I always say onwards and upwards - the hard work continues ready for next season! We shall be holding auditions the first week of September for everyone and anyone wanting to join and compete in our teams this coming season 2019/20.” For more information please contact principle Paris on 638591139 essencedanceandfitness@gmail. com or find the group on Facebook

EssenceDanceAndFitness Paris finished by saying, “I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us throughout our journey and season, specially all the parents, family and friends and our sponsors: CJBuilders, Quesada Fish & Chips, Comaskey Rentals, EcoCity Torrevieja, Avanza Mobility, CEIP Las Culturas & their AMPA team, Go Home to Spain. From the bottom of my heart thank you everyone and a big big big well done to all my amazing little super stars!”

Welcome to Mallorca Mallorca (or Majorca) is a Mediterranean island of stunning natural beauty. Its early reputation for cheap mass tourism emerged from the large scale developments on the island’s south west coast. Early resorts which remain popular today include Magaluf and Palma Nova to the west of Palma and Can Pastilla to the east. In more recent times Mallorca has reinvented itself with an emphasis on more upmarket tourism with visitors encouraged to explore the island’s beautiful coastline and interior. The east coast of Mallorca consists of more than fifty secluded coves of enormous beauty. Cala Millor or Cala Bona are ideal bases from which to discover this region. Best Time to Visit The weather in Mallorca is pretty much what you would expect from one of the Mediterranean’s premier beach holiday destinations. Every summer millions of tourists from all over Europe fly into Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport in anticipation of long, hot days and lovely, warm nights. They won’t be disappointed. The peak summer months see temperatures rising above the 30ºC in the afternoons with rainfall highly unlikely other than the odd summer storm which is usually most welcome after

enduring such heat. From the rainfall and temperature figures presented below you’ll see that July and August are both the driest and the hottest months. They are also the most expensive for holidays and the busiest time for all the resorts. If you are flexible on travel dates and don’t need to be on holiday during these peak months then I’d strongly recommend

that you consider visiting Mallorca on either side of them. Personally I love being on the island at anytime in May or June as well as during the month of September. It’s still busy with plenty going on all over the island but without the scorching summer temperatures and the masses of people tied to school holidays from all over the continent. Daytime remains really nice and warm with pleasant evenings for dining outdoors.

Things to do Palma de Mallorca: In their haste to get to their holiday accommodation and to stay there so many visitors never find time to visit the capital of Mallorca which is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities. Some of the highlights of the city include the La Seu Cathedral which took almost 400 years to build, the Royal Palace of La Almudaina and the circular Bellver Castle which overlooks the Bay of Palma. Time permitting it’s well worth taking a full-day vintage train journey from Palma to Soller. Serra de Tramuntana: This the mountain range runs parallel with Mallorca’s north-west coast. Its landscape has been recognised by UNESCO which named it a World Heritage Site. The rugged terrain and mountain peaks present quite a contrast with the gentle east coast. It’s well worth renting a car driving the stunning north-west coast from Alcudia in the north to Andratx in the south. Highlights of the journey include the Monastery at Lluc, Soller, Deia and Valldemossa. Caves of Drac: Located near Porto Cristo on the east coast, the Caves of Drach are one of the island’s top tourist attractions. There’s a large lake inside the caves where a short classical music performance takes place during visits.

We miss his girlfriend

Our son lived with his long term girlfriend for many years. To our shock and disappointment, he has left her for another woman. We have grown very fond of this girl - she was our daughter-in-law to all intents and purposes. He says we should no longer see her. We are extremely sad and unhappy about the situation, and we don’t think our son has the right to say who we should see, and who we should not.

When relationships break down, families are often left in turmoil. On one hand you would like to respect your son’s wishes, but on the other you have grown to care for this girl. It’s a tough one, and there are no easy answers, except that you can only try and explain matters to your son and hope he accepts the situation. You could always arrange to meet up away from the house, and see how it goes. You might find though in time that if she meets someone else, she may want to distance herself.

www.costablancapeople.com

Should I give her another chance? I was glad to leave school last year as I hated every minute of it. I was particularly happy to leave behind all my ‘socalled’ friends, but one of these girls contacted me and asked to hook up. My Mum said I should go out with her because I have been staying in a lot, and it would be good for me. It turns out she has ditched the other friends, so latched on to me. However, I never really liked her and she was a bit nasty to me.

As you go through life you will find you meet many lovely people, young and old, who you will consider your friend. If this girl continues to be nasty to you, then you have the right to ditch her if you want to, but give it a try first because people can change, and she might have been behaving that way because of peer pressure. We all do a lot of growing up once we have left school, and she may want to make amends.

Brit arrested for fake robbery in Benidorm A British man has been arrested after lying and pretending to police officers that he was robbed in Benidorm of a substantial amount of money. The man, 45, made a falsified denuncia claiming two thugs had assaulted him from behind and

knocked him unconscious. In the imaginary tussle, the thieves robbed a watch worth €8,900, a phone and bank cards. The man then also claimed €2,170 had been taken from his account with the stolen cards. However, CCTV records taken

from the surveillance system above the Benidorm cashpoint showed the very same man extracting the money on five different occasions over a space of two days. Caught out in his lie, the man will reportedly soon appear before a judge.

Portugal thanks Spain for 'swift response' to fire Portuguese authorities have confirmed the massive wildfire in the centre of the country is now under control and has thanked Spain for its prompt help in sending equipment. Five fires broke out within an hour, three of them huge, in the Vila de Rei district, mostly in and around Castelo Branco and Mação, leaving 41 people needing medical assistance. Of these, 17 were injured, one of them seriously. After a 70-hour battle with the flames, over 8,500 hectares

(21,000 acres) of countryside, woodland and mountain landscape has been wiped out. Minister of internal

administration Eduardo Cabrita said he had thanked Spain's interior ministry for their swift response after calling on the neighbouring country for help on Monday afternoon. “Two hours after [asking for assistance], there was a pair of fire-fighting planes already on site working,” Cabrita revealed. Spain also sent planes in June 2017 to help battle the worst inferno in Portuguese history, which killed 61 people in the centre of the country, of whom 30 had become trapped in their cars by a wall of flames when attempting to escape.

Safety and style from Zenia Services Summer is finally here and along with the sunshine and sangria come more unwelcome seasonal additions such as mosquitoes. With new warnings being issued regarding the Southeast Asian Tiger mosquito as well as the more common and garden varieties, Mosquito blinds are pretty much a necessity if you live or have a holiday home in Spain. Zenia Services has built its excellent reputation over several years as the company that does ‘everyhing to do with windows, except the windows’ across the southern Costa Blanca and is now leading the way by offering evacuation safety grills, grill refurbishment and, of course, those all

way to prevent break‐ins and opportunistic thefts. However, should doorways be blocked by fire then these safety grills can affectively become prison bars. Zenia Services can transform your security grill into a secure fire escape which allows the grill to be opened from the inside and as an added security feature the mechanism cannot be seen from the outside, giving the evacuation grill the same appearance as any other grill. The safety grills lock from the inside and can be quickly and easily unlocked by key. Zenia Services can also give your tired grills a new lease of life, sprucing up the kerb appeal of you property ideal for a summer

important mosquito blinds. Zenia Blinds makes and manufactures all of its blinds in house – it offers full range of roller blinds, in addition to mosquito blinds ‐ cutting out the middle‐man. 3 REASONS TO LIVE IN YOUR NEW HOME BEFORE RENOVATING

When purchasing any property, there will always be certain things that will not be exactly what you’re looking for in a home. For example, you may not like the bathroom, or feel the kitchen needs updating. No matter which home you choose, there will always be “tweaks” required here and there. You may however, be buying a property with the intention to make renovations. But,before you get the sledgehammer out, you need to be sure what changes you wish to tackle, otherwise it could cost you thousands.

2

Living in the home for a while, can change your opinion on exactly what it is,that you’d like to alter. Once you’ve lived in it, you’ll be able to figure out exactly what needs seeing to first, and, you may even change your mind on whether you really do need to remove an entire wall!

3

As long as you can live in at least part of the house, don’t feel like you have to rush things. Like any home improvement, things take time. You need to overestimate your time frame… especially in Spain! Builders may give you a guideline of how long the renovation project may take, but don’t bank on it being finished on time. Have your “go with the flow” mindset hat on, and don’t get stressed out if you can’t get it all done at once. Remember, it will be worth the wait! Contrary to popular belief, buyers that say they don’t want to purchase a home that needs any work at all, do end up with a home that needs at least, a little!

Here are 3 reasons to live in your new home, before renovating:

Buying? Enjoy the journey!

1

If you’re on the hunt to buy a property in Spain, head to www.QuesadaDeals.com for a list of the best area deals.

Buying a home is a big deal, and you deserve a break! So before you’re ready to start removing tiles off the walls, and pulling shower fitments out, take a well deserved rest. It probably took you a while to get into homeownership in Spain in the first place, so go easy on yourself, and don’t try to tackle everything as soon as you get the keys.

Bingeworthy Box Sets Game of Thrones George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" is brought to the screen as HBO sinks its considerable storytelling teeth into the medieval fantasy epic. It's the depiction of two powerful families -- kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men -playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and to sit atop the Iron Throne. Martin is credited as a co-executive producer and one of the writers for the series, whose shooting locations include Northern Ireland, Malta, Croatia and Spain.

Dexter Dexter Morgan is a Miami-based blood splatter expert who doesn't just solve murders; he commits them too. In fact, he's a serial killer -- but he only murders the guilty, so he feels justified with his lifestyle choices. His policewoman sister and his cop co-workers have no idea Dexter lives a double life; however, adoptive father Harry knows his secret, and does, in fact, help Dexter hone his "skills." It's a unique brand of justice for which charming Dexter feels a psychological hunger.

Spanish singer nominated for three MTV Awards Artist of the moment Rosalía has been nominated for three MTV Awards – less than a year after appearing on the mainstream music scene. The flamenco-hip hop singer, 25, was completely unknown in 2016, but she has since built up an international following: USbased R&B artist Alicia Keys recently phoned her for help with her Spanish pronunciation recently phoned her to ask for help with her Spanish pronunciation for an upcoming new single, and British comedian James Corden announced on social media that he wanted her on his Late Late Show. Rosalía has already designed and released a collection for budget street-wear fashion chain Pull&Bear – part of the Inditex empire – has duetted with Colombian Reggaeton singer J. Balvin, US rapper Pharrell Williams, of Happy fame, and British electro, soul and R&B artist James Blake, has been on tour across Europe and performed in major music festivals including Mad Cool and Primavera Sound, and is the first Spaniard to have been nominated for a BBC Sound of 2019 Award.

She has a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Fusion/Performance, another for Best Alternative Song – both for her first chart hit, Malamente – and was nominated for a third, for Best Short Form Music Video. Rosalía made her acting début this year in cult director Pedro Almódovar's Dolor y Gloria ('Pain and Glory') and has announced a forthcoming duet with alternative-folk artist Billie Eilish, a US singer, songwriter and model of Irish descent. Although Rosalía has only really become famous in Spain and beyond in the past year – since the release of Malamente at the end of May 2018 – she has in fact been performing live since 2013 and created her first studio album, Los Ángeles ('The Angels') in 2017, jointly with Raúl Refree and focusing on reworks of flamenco classics. For the MTV Awards, she is up for Best New Artist, the only non-English-language singer in the running, and Best Choreography and Best Latin Video for her Con Altura with J. Balvin. She joins global names such as Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, who have 10 nominations each, plus Cardi B,

The Jonas Brothers, Shawn Mendes, Halsey, and Billie Eilish. Rosalía will be competing for awards with other Latin music stars such as Bad Bunny and Drake for their single MÍA, Anuel AA and Karol G for Secreto, Justin Bieber's ex-girlfriend Selena Gómez with Benny Blanco, Tainy and J. Balvin for I Can't Get Enough, controversial Reggaeton singer Maluma – famous internationally for his live performance with Madonna – for his Mala Mía, and Daddy Yankee and Canadian rapper Snow. The latter pair have recently released Con Calma, a Spanishlanguage remix of Snow's catchy 1992 hit, Informer. This year's MTV Awards include new categories for KPop, the new South Korean style which has taken the world by storm and whose nominees include the groups BTS and BlackPink, and for 'Video for the Greater Good' for the best music videos with a social or humanitarian theme. Fans can vote for their favourites via the MTV website, although the main decision will be made by a panel of expert judges.

Unemployment falls in Spain

Unemployment figures fell in Spain in the second quarter of the year, with 123,600 fewer people registered as out of a job between April and June, leaving the overall jobless rate at 14.02 percent. The drop in the unemployment rate is the smallest in recent years, but it is chiefly due to a growing workforce, rather than a sluggish job market. The number of people willing and able to work grew by 210,100 in the second quarter of the year, pushing the workforce in Spain above 23 million people. On the employment side, 333,800 new jobs were added to the economy, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). This is the lowest number since 2016, confirming a slowdown that had been anticipated by recent Social

Security affiliation figures. April, May and June are traditionally the best months for job creation in Spain. The Easter holidays, the beginning of summer season and temporary hirings all fuel employment, particularly in the tourism sector. In the second quarter of the year, most jobs were added in services and industry, while they fell in the agricultural and construction sectors. Broken down by regions, the greatest increase in jobs was in the Balearic Islands (62,600 more), Madrid (61,100) and Catalonia (40,200). But many of those positions were temporary. In the second quarter, the ratio of temporary workers to salaried employees was 26.36 percent.

Summer means Mozzies Summer is here, and so are the mosquitoes. Nothing has the power to ruin a perfect evening like the buzzing sound that means its owner is in search of a warm meal of fresh blood. There are more than 3,000 species of this insect spread across the globe, enough to ruin the evening no matter where we happen to be. It’s no joke, either. These tiny creatures are considered the deadliest animals in the world, contributing to more than 725,000 deaths a year. Not even humans cause this many fatalities: people kill around 475,000 other people a year. Snakes are behind some 50,000 human deaths, while dogs are responsible for 25,000 (mostly from rabies). Some of the world’s most feared animals, such as sharks or wolves, kill fewer than 10 people a year. For those who wonder why mosquitoes make that buzzing sound, and for those desperate to know why they are always singled out by mosquitoes, even in a large group of people, here are a few facts to keep in mind. Why do they buzz? Mosquitoes do not buzz as a warning to their victims, but to alert other mosquitoes who are willing to breed. The sound is simply louder when the insects are flying around your head in search of a place to land. Dr Louis M. Roth, who spent his younger years studying mosquito-borne yellow fever for the US Army, published a report in 1948 about the species Aedes aegypti, in which he found that males

ignored females when these were resting quietly. But when the latter buzzed away, the males would go after them frantically upon hearing the distinct female flight sound. Why do they always choose me? Although both sexes make a buzzing sound, males do not bite: they feed on nectar. Now let’s see how the females select their victims. The key lies in the chemical “landscape” in the air that surrounds us. Mosquitoes use specialised behaviour and sensory organs to read the subtle chemical traces that our bodies emit. They depend on the CO2 that we exhale to find their hosts. When we breathe out, the CO2 does not immediately mix with the air, but creates temporary plumes that the mosquitoes follow. Like bloodhounds, they follow those tracks to locate targets as far as 50 meters away. At this point, the mosquito has located the group of people in which you, the primary victim, are to be found. Things start getting personal at a distance of around one meter. At short range, these insects factor in several elements, such as your skin temperature, the presence of steam, and the colour of your clothes. But scientists believe that the most relevant variable is the

combination of chemical compounds produced by the colonies of microbes that reside in our skin. Bacteria turn the secretions from our sweat glands into volatile compounds that mosquitoes detect through olfactory sensors located in their antennae. There are over 300 different chemical compounds that are combined variously from person to person, depending on their genes and surrounding environment. According to an article published in the science journal PLOS ONE, people with a greater diversity of microbes on their skin tend to get fewer bites than those with lower microbial diversity. These subtle differences can explain the great difference in the amount of times a person gets bitten by mosquitoes. And since there is nothing we can do about this microbial mix on our skin, there is not much we can do to avoid the bites, except maybe avoid wearing black, which mosquitoes seem to love!

Downton Abbey movie sequel When it comes to Downton Abbey, fans could watch 1,000 Christmasspecial episodes and still crave more Edwardian era pomp and circumstance. Luckily, series creator Julian Fellowes saved the day when he announced a Downton Abbey movie last year, due out 20th September, which will pick up where the beloved Masterpiece TV show left off. The movie, which takes place in

1927 (one year after the PBS show), focuses on a visit from King George V and Queen Mary (aka Queen Elizabeth’s grandparents) to Downton Abbey— but this might not be the last we hear from the Crawley clan. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Fellowes and movie director Michael a about asked were Engler sequel...because we all know the movie, starring familiar faces like Maggie Smith as

the Dowager Countess, Hugh Bonneville as Earl of Grantham, Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary, Matthew Goode as Henry Talbot and many more, will leave audiences wanting more Downton. “I think there always is potential,” Engler said, though he was clear that the movie doesn't end with a cliff hanger. “For me now to say, ‘Absolutely, definitely this is it, there will never be another film,’ I would just be foolish.

Because you end up eating your words, you know?" Fellowes said. "I mean, I wouldn’t mind making another film. We were very happy making this one. So let’s see what happens.” “How many movies were there of Star Wars? This could run and run," joked Bonneville, who stars as Robert Crawley, patriarch of the Grantham estate. And fans would be delighted if the film franchise went on and on...and on.

Spain has lowest annual mortality rate in the EU Spain has the lowest annual mortality rate in the European Union. In 2016 there were 829 deaths for every 100,000 inhabitants, below the European average of 1,002, according to figures released recently by Eurostat, the EU’s statistics office. Besides Spain, the three other countries with the lowest annual mortality rate that year were France (838 for every 100,000), Italy (843) and Malta (882). At the other end of the spectrum, the highest rates were found in Bulgaria (1,600), Latvia and Romania (tied at 1,476). The causes of death did not change from previous studies: of the 5.1 million deaths that occurred across the EU in 2016, 36 percent were caused by cardiovascular disease, mostly heart attacks and strokes. The second largest group, representing 26 percent of the total, was cancer. The only countries where cancer was the leading cause of death were Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In Spain, the low mortality rate is combined with a high life expectancy: 83 years, compared with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and

Development (OECD) average of 80.6 years, which puts Spain second behind Japan. “Despite Spain’s privileged situation, the pending challenge is to reduce arteriosclerosis, which is the ageing of arteries and build-up of fat and bad cholesterol on artery walls,” says Manuel Anguita, president of the Spanish Cardiology Society. This physician notes that 50 percent of the population has excessive levels of bad cholesterol due to poor diets, lack of exercise, and in some cases due to genetic factors. Spain’s traditional diet and a lifestyle that favours outdoor exchanges with friends and family have also been mentioned as factors that help reduce mortality. “Although Scandinavian countries have a higher per capita GDP – Sweden ranks 17th and Spain 34th, according to the International Monetary Fund – Mediterranean countries have a lifestyle that favours longevity,” says Anguita. Public healthcare Practically the entire Spanish population (99.8%) has access to free public healthcare, two points above the OECD average. However, investment during the

economic crisis, between 2009 and 2013, grew only 0.6 percentage points, compared with earlier rates of 3.4 points. Public spending on healthcare in 2016 was around €2,800 per inhabitant, well below the OECD average of €3,400.

“We shouldn’t be complacent when we compare ourselves with other European countries; we should analyse where we are failing and predict how this could impact future mortality,” says Ildefonso Hernández, a professor of preventive medicine and public health at Miguel Hernández University.

One of the issues to take into account, says this expert, is child poverty, where Spain has one of the highest rates in the EU (28.3 percent), ranking third after Romania (32.2 percent) and Bulgaria (29.2 percent).

“That segment of the population is being exposed to cheap food that is poor in nutrition. This intake increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and even though its impact is not visible yet, it will be.” Experts also point to a new spike in smoking, which could increase cancer rates and cardiovascular diseases.

Hottest new trend for tequila drinkers Tequila has come to connote summer, fiestas, and the rich culture of Mexico. It’s also incredibly versatile: you can sip it, down it in one, mix it with soda, have it in a margarita, use it to replace the key ingredient in pretty much any traditional cocktail. For those wanting to explore options beyond shots and margs, there’s never been a better time. Interest in tequila shows no sign of slowing, so more and more products are making their way onto the British market. In addition to the increasing availability of artisanal tequilas and other mezcals (the former being the best known variety of the latter), demand is driving innovation and the development of ultra-premium agave-based spirits. One of the hot new trends is cristalino tequila, which in just a decade has become the bestselling super-premium expression in Mexico. A cristalino is made when aged tequila is treated to remove the colour it picks up from resting in wooden barrels. Sometimes this is achieved through further distillation, but more often by filtering it with activated charcoal. These processes also remove some the

harsher flavours that some drinkers find off-putting, leaving a clear liquid with more body and complexity than an un-aged tequila, and in which bold agave gives way to more rounded citrus notes. Cristalinos’ toned-down profile has been controversial among fans of agave-forward tequilas, but they appear to be drawing in consumers who might otherwise have been deterred, and they open up new possibilities for cocktails. Marketed as the world’s first añejo claro tequila, Don Julio 70 is made with 100 per cent blue agave, triple distilled, and aged for 18 months in white oak barrels before being charcoal filtered. This process retains much of the deep vanilla and toasted oak that

comes from the barrel, while reintroducing tempered notes of the raw agave you would expect in a much younger spirit. It’s smooth, stable, and crystal clear. Don Julio’s UK brand ambassador Deano Moncrieffe recommends serving Don Julio 70 in place of gin in a white negroni: a fiendishly clever drink, the unassuming appearance of which belies its satisfyingly bracing bitterness. For those seeking even greater extravagance, Juan Domingo Beckmann Legorreta – the 11th generation leader of the Jose Cuervo tequila empire – has crafted the first in a new line of ultra-premium tequilas, Maestro DOBEL 50 1•9•6•7. The tang of agave is married with hints of sweet figs, walnuts and spices, easing into a rich butterscotch finish that’s almost chewable. It’s intended to be the start of a new tradition, with a new version produced each year, drawing inspiration from the events of half a century earlier. So you can soon look forward to the lingering sour taste of a 1•9•6•8 edition, with flavours influenced by the Students and Workers General Strike in France, the assassination of Bobby Kennedy, and the birth of Celine Dion.

Eating fish three times a week 'cuts bowel cancer risk' Eating at least three portions of fish per week cuts the risk of bowel cancer, according to a study involving almost half a million people. Those who enjoy fish on such a regular basis have a 12 percent lower risk of bowel cancer than those who eat less than one portion per week. The finding related to all types of fish, though people who opt only for smaller portions of oily fish can also cut their risk of bowel cancer by 10 percent. Researchers examined the dietary habits of 476,160 people who had filled in food frequency questionnaires, which included detail on their fish intake including white, fatty, oily and lean fish. Over the next 15 years, 6,291 people developed bowel cancer. The results showed that eating 359.1g of any fish per week led to a 12 percent decreased risk of bowel cancer compared with eating less than 63.49g a week. Meanwhile, people eating just 123.9g a week of oily fish, such as salmon and sardines, enjoyed a 10 percent lower risk of bowel cancer. A typical portion of fish is around 100g. The researchers concluded: "Consumption of fish appears to reduce the risk of colorectal (bowel) cancer and should be encouraged as part of a healthy

diet." Eating shellfish appeared to have no effect on the risk of bowel cancer - the second highest death rate of all cancers. In 2015, 43,178 cases of bowel cancer were diagnosed. Experts think around 40 per cent of all cancers are down to unhealthy lifestyles. The research team said fatty and oily fish is an extremely rich source of certain fatty acids, which are believed to have a protective effect in the body and prevent inflammation. Non-fatty fish also contains these particular fatty acid compounds. The study, which included experts from the University of Oxford and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), was published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. It was funded by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) in order to help strengthen its advice to the public. Dr Marc Gunter, the lead researcher from the IARC, said: "Our research shows that eating fish appears to reduce the risk of bowel cancer and should be

encouraged as part of a healthy diet. Dr Anna Diaz Font, head of research funding at the WCRF, said: "This large study adds to the scientific evidence suggesting that consuming fish could reduce the risk of bowel cancer. The biological reasons by which fish consumption potentially lowers risk are not fully understood but one of the theories include specific fatty acids such as omega3, found almost exclusively in fish, being responsible for this protective effect via their antiinflammatory properties." Lisa Wilde, director of research and external affairs at Bowel Cancer UK, welcomed the study but called for further research. She said: "Making simple changes to your lifestyle can help stack the odds against bowel cancer. Including wholegrains, fibre and fish in your diet, being of a healthy body weight, having regular physical activity, avoiding processed meats and limiting red meat, can all make a real difference."

Discover Spanish Paradors W

alk into a parador anywhere in Spain and you are immediately immersed in the history of the country. To get the full impact, pick one region – Extremadura, Galicia, CastillaLeón or Aragón perhaps – and spend a week staying in restored monasteries, castles and palaces, but also in modern buildings with design that suits the particular rural or urban setting. At many paradors, 21st-century culture blends effortlessly into the historical settings, with tapestries and suits of armour set alongside contemporary artworks and designer furniture. All you have to do is sink into a sumptuous velvet armchair and soak it up. With Paradors scattered all over the country, there are far too many to showcase, but here are a few to tempt you... Parador de Granada - Granada, Andalucia You’ll want to book well in advance for a stay at Granada’s luxurious parador, lodged in a 14th-century Moorish palace turned Reconquista convent. It offers elegantly contemporary rooms, and with the Alhambra on your doorstep, it’s one of Spain’s most coveted and history-rich hotels. There’s a tangible historical presence no matter which corridor you wander down: the Sala Nazarí retains its 14th-century tile-work, the terrace shows off Moorish baths, and, in the chapel courtyard, you can see the original graves of the Catholic Monarchs. Being allowed to stroll around the Alhambra’s freeaccess areas once the crowds leave is a dream.

Parador de Cangas de Onís - Cangas de Onís, Asturias This medieval monastery on the banks of the Sella river in Asturias is now a fourstar Parador that is a comfortable retreat after a day walking or cycling in the Picos de Europa mountains. The Parador occupies the former monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva, which has National Monument status. Parts date back to the 12th century, although vestiges of an even earlier structure have been discovered. Free yoga classes take place in the library several mornings a week. Bikes are available for rental and lots of other outdoor activities can be arranged, including fishing, kayaking, hiking and riding. Parador de El Hierro- El Hierro Romantic, private colonial charm and contemporary comfort combine in this elegant parador set between mountains and sea, on the island that was once considered the end of the world. It's set directly on a beach at the foot of cliffs on the sunny east coast of the Unesco Biosphere Canary Island of El Hierro. Lowrise, whitewashed walls with traditional wooden balconies and extensive, volcanic stone terraces are all set within sub-tropical gardens. The hotel's pièce de résistance is its magnificent swimming pool set on the edge of the ocean, in full sun, surrounded by terraces and backed by a small gym, sauna, steam room and whirlpool bath. Parador de León - Castilla y Léon The 16th-century Hostal de San Marcos is now a sumptuous five-star hotel, one of the grandest in the Parador

group. It is all about the monumental setting, so don’t expect loads of facilities. The magnificent building was originally a monastery and hospice for pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compestela and is a key point on the route. Its rich history is discernible throughout the property, which is full of artworks and antiques. Go for room 559 – Torreón – which is in one of the turrets giving onto the Plaza de San Marcos and overlooking the river. You might be pleasantly surprised by the rates as pretty good offers are available. Parador de Tortosa - Tortosa, Catalonia A Moorish fortress with modern comforts in Catalonia, on a hill nearly 200ft above sea level, looking down on the 2,000-year-old town of Tortosa and the valley of the River Ebro. The Zuda Castle is a grand building — a place of mellow stone, lofty halls with stainedglass windows and beamed ceilings, long corridors lined with images of Spanish nobles. Facilities include a lovely outdoor pool with views over the town. Rooms are not so much palatial as monkish with mod cons: plain walls, dark-wood furniture, terracotta tiled floor and a comfortable bed. Balconies offer views towards the river and the town. Parador de Cáceres - Cáceres, Extremadura Housed in a palace in the heart of Cáceres, which has World Heritage status, the parador combines aristocratic grandeur with contemporary design. Staying here means you are totally immersed in the magical atmosphere of the town and can walk everywhere in

Pride of Spain Awards 2019 Now in its thirteenth year, the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards celebrates ordinary people who do extraordinary things, with nominees reflecting the core value of giving for the good of other people, and the community at large here on the Costa Blanca. Once you decide what category your nominee fits into you can nominate someone - a family member, a colleague, a community member or even someone you respect and admire from afar - who you feel deserves recognition for what they do or have achieved. At the heart of the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards is Costa Blanca People boss, Claire Richards, who started the original concept and continues to drive the initiative with her hard work and commitment. Claire told us, “When we launched the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards in 2007, our aim was simple – to unearth and celebrate our unsung heroes - the people who make this community great. It’s hard to believe that it is thirteen years later, and The Pride of Spain Awards have exceeded our wildest expectations. Each

year, we continue to be overwhelmed by the stories of selfless actions, courage, compassion and heroism. This is our chance to celebrate the fact that every day countless expat residents go out of their way to help their neighbours, often receiving little recognition for the extraordinary contributions they make to their communities. All of us know someone who deserves such recognition for their selfless actions. It might be your mum, your sibling, your cousin, your best friend, neighbour or school teacher.

I urge you to take a few minutes and nominate them for a Pride of Spain Award in 2019. On behalf of everyone at the Costa Blanca People, I would like to thank our readers, sponsors, political and community leaders who lend their ongoing support to the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards.” To nominate your local hero, simply go to http://www.costablancapeople.c om/pride-of-spain-awards/ and fill in the online form. was originally the place where pilgrims could rest after walking across Spain to pay homage to St James in the Cathedral. It is one of the oldest lodgings in the world and still welcomes pilgrims, although it is very luxurious these days. The large granite complex is set around four courtyards with information panels explaining the building’s long history – you can do guided tours too. There are some spectacular – and massive – rooms with four-poster beds and antique furniture, some overlooking the square.

Low down on sun cream Wearing sunscreen during the day – and all year round, including in the winter – is a must, especially here in Spain. When the sun is shining (and even when it's not), the UV rays emitted have the ability to cause irreversible damage to skin. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and skin cancer, while UVA rays cause things like fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation. As well as covering up or avoiding the sun, sunscreen provides a shield against both forms of harmful rays. How often you reapply sunscreen all depends on what you are doing. If you are out and about and in direct sunlight, you should be reapplying sunscreen every 2-3 hours. On the beach, once an hour. It is generally advised about a teaspoon amount for the face and the neck. If you are sitting in an office all day, just once per day should be adequate. 15, 25, 30, 50... Wherever you shop sunscreen, there will always be a number following 'SPF' on each label, but what exactly is this an indication of? SPF or 'sun protection factor' tells us how much longer we can stay out in the sun without burning, compared to our natural protection. However, the SPF is calculated in laboratory conditions, so it relies on the fact that we put on about 30ml per application and that we reapply regularly. You should also see the phrase

'broad spectrum' on the label of any good bottle of sunscreen and it's just as important as the SPF number, if not more so. A broad spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVB and UVA. Rays that come from the sun fall into a number of different wavelengths. The SPF on the bottle mainly gives us information about UVB, which is the wavelength of light which causes burning and is responsible for skin cancers. We know that other wavelengths of light, particularly UVA, are detrimental to the skin, causing ageing and wrinkling. Should you apply sunscreen before or after moisturiser? We've established that applying SPF in the morning is a must, regardless of how lengthy your morning routine currently is, but where it features in that routine is especially important. You should always apply sunscreen after moisturiser. It

should be the last step in your skincare routine, just before you put your makeup on if you wear it. This instantly maximises your protection against the sun. If you have very oily or acne-prone skin, some experts suggest ditching moisturiser and just applying sunscreen, as most formulas are already suspended in a moisturising base. Moisturiser and makeup containing SPF may sound smart, but is no replacement for sunscreen. We know that you need to apply about 5ml of product to get the required SPF on the bottle and this is much more than most people would use as foundation or moisturiser. In addition, the sunscreens added to makeup may not be the best broad spectrum cover. Experts recommend a well-formulated tinted sunscreen which can be a great base as well as having dedicated SPF technology.

Sweat proof makeup to get you through August Primer For All Skin Types And Tones... All good heat-proof make-up starts with a proper primer. Shiseido refining make up primer is an amazing all rounder for getting your make-up through the sweatiest tube ride/most rigorous cycle to work/fastest dash round the un-air conditioned sales. Plus SPF20 for a bit of extra help. Powder For All Skin Types And Tones... This super finely milled powder – RMS ‘UN’ Powder - absorbs excess oil and minimises the appearance of pores with genius tiny Silica granules. The best bit? It's totally translucent so it won't leave a chalky residue on even the deepest skin tones. Foundation For 'Normal' Skin... The key thing to note about this foundation is that it goes on sheer, so your skin genuinely looks au natural. Build up the layers if you want more coverage, either way it's pretty much impossible to smudge which means white necklines are A-ok. A top chice here would be Estee Lauder Double Wear Light Stay-in-Place make up. Waterproof mascara... Conveniently located at the local pharmacy, this grab-able mascara is accessible anywhere. Smudgeproof and ready for yoga or boxing, swipe this on and you’ve got yourself some affordable faux-lashes. Feel free to doe eye your trainer or hit the local fro-yo after you exercise. No one will be the wiser.

Belly busting Belly fat can creep up on any of us at any time. One minute you can be feeling pretty pleased with your figure, and the next despairing at how to keep that persistent pouch looking trim. Whether you've always carried weight around your stomach or it's crept on with age, it's well-known that middle-aged spread can be detrimental to your health. But, unsurprisingly, fad diets won't be the answer you've been looking for – at least not in the long term. What causes belly fat? One of the most common causes is simply eating too much. But this can be done without realising – since it's also about how many calories we burn. In order to maintain a healthy weight, we need to burn as many calories as we eat. However, if you're mostly sedentary, burning those calories can be a struggle. A slowing metabolism may also be contributing – particularly if the weight has crept on with age. However, if it's always been a problem, weight around your tummy may be hereditary. When trying to lose weight around your stomach, it's important to keep in mind that you can't choose where you lose weight. That being said, there are some great tips you can put into place to help you lose overall body fat which in turn should help you develop a flatter stomach if that is your goal. Look at your diet It's important to eliminate overeating

on junk foods, takeaways and high sugary foods. These are often high in calorie and don't always leave you feeling full. This means you are then more likely to eat again quite quickly, leading to overall increase in calories per day. Replace these foods with healthier options. We all know we need to eat more greens and less cake, but actually putting it into practise can be easier said than done. The best way to make sure you stick to a diet? Make it a lifestyle change, instead. Swap your sugary treats for

healthy alternatives, eat plenty of fibre and – of course – drink more water. Focus on exercise No matter how much you might try to avoid it, exercise is necessary to keep you healthy. Developing strength and muscle can help you with your weight loss. The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn at rest over time. However, it's not all about doing situps. Focusing on core exercises alone won't help you lose weight so it’s

important to do workouts that involve all muscles. It is recommended that adults aged between 19-64 get 150 minutes of weekly physical activity - you can start slowly, by going on long walks, and build up to cardio exercises by swimming and jogging. Strength exercises that work all the major muscles (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms) are particularly effective at generating results. Eat more vegetables We underestimate the effect of vegetables in our diet. Many, like broccoli, are low in calorie but high in fibre. Fibre helps you to feel fuller for longer, making you less likely to pick and snack on junk food between meals. Fibre can also be found in oats, lentils and legumes, almonds and chia seeds. An easy way to introduce more fibre into your diet is to ensure that your plate always contains some form of vegetable. Switch to brown bread and pasta and snack on nuts and seeds. Protein also gives you a feeling of satiety. The digestion and breakdown of protein from your meals require a higher number of calories than other food groups. This means not only will you reduce the likelihood of overeating on snacks throughout the day, you are also 'burning' more calories simply through the process of digesting the protein you have eaten. Good protein sources include: fish, chicken, eggs, lentils and legumes.

Tech News Facebook ‘rocked to its very foundations’ Facebook has admitted that it was "rocked to its very foundations" by the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Facebook's head of global affairs, Sir Nick Clegg, claimed that it was fair to say the company "hadn't done enough" in the past. "But I don't think it's fair to say that the company did nothing," he said. "Quite a lot of new measures have been introduced in recent years to keep data safe and to try and protect people's privacy, but clearly not enough." The social network is paying a record $5bn (£4bn) fine to settle privacy concerns with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). It follows allegations that Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy, improperly obtained the data of up to 87 million Facebook users in 2018. Facebook has also agreed to pay the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) $100m to settle charges of making misleading disclosures regarding its handling of user data.

Eric via email asks: Dear aunty, I am running Kingsoft Office Premium 2019. I would like to be able to print my own sticky labels, but can not find out how to do this. I have looked in their help pages online, but can only find that you can download labels to print on, but I already have lots of my own labels of various size that I would like to use. I have also sent a email to them through "contact us button" but got no answer (very helpful) can you help? Many thanks. Aunty Says: Hi Eric. I haven’t used Kingsoft programs before but I imagne it is similar to some of the other free Apps that are out there. In the free Open Office Writer that I use I select “labels” when I ceate a new document. I then choose the brand and size of the label paper I am using and I can then enter the details. In older apps the label printing is done through the “Mail Merge” option. It may be neccesary to go onto the label paper manafacturers website and download what is known as a “Printing Template”. David via email asks: Hello Aunry, I wonder if you can help please. I use Firefox (latest version) on Windows 10 (latest updates) and until recently, if I made a spelling mistake in either Hotmail or Gmail, the error was marked either in red or underscored (I can't remember which). About three weeks ago this just stopped and I am sure that I didn't make any changes that might have caused it. I looked in Firefox options and the checkbox to highlight errors is ticked and the language is set to English. I've tried Firefox help which wasn't any help! Spellcheck in Office Word works as normal. I don't know where to turn now as my fingers are

slightly bigger than the keys on the keyboard and I do make the occasional mistake. Do you have any suggestions please? Aunty Says: Hello David. This could be a problem with the built in Firefox dictionary installation so go to addons.mozilla.org/firefox/languagetools and Install the English dictionary. If this doesn’t sort things out then maybe install another spellchecker add-on. Go to addons.mozilla.org and type SPELL into the search box and you should get the option to download and install one. Geoff via email asks: Dear Aunty, In your last article you

mention "free Malwarebytes". I was advised to install the same and had a free period. When this expired I had to pay €39.99 to continue. Have I paid for something which is free? Aunty Says: Hi Geoff. You can have Malwarebytes for free but it is a slightly cut-down version and you will need to manually check your system rather than having the paid version do this automatically. I don’t think €39 is too much for such a great app and I would certainly pay for it if I wasn’t such a penny pincher. Any questions then do email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com. See you all next week.

Almost half of road traffic fatalities had consumed alcohol or drugs In the latest data released relating to road traffic fatalities on the roads of Spain, it has been revealed that almost half of the drivers who lost their lives had consumed alcohol, drugs, or both prior to the incident which cost them their lives. In total, 535 drivers were killed on the roads in 2018, resulting in their bodies being subjected to post mortem alcohol and drugs testing. Of those, 43.4% tested positive for the presence of alcohol, drugs, or both. The National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences, or El Instituto Nacional de ToxicologĂa y Ciencias Forenses (INTCF), collected the result from 751 fatalities (535 drivers, 143 pedestrians and 73 passengers) who had been involved in road traffic incidents. The statistics also reveal that of those who lost their lives and tested positive, 94.4% are men. The data also shows that the most common age range is from 25 to 54, and that 56.1% of driver deaths were in a car, 31.4% were on a motorcycle.

The report also reveals that alcohol is the most common substance detected in deceased drivers, with 61.2% testing positive (71.1% with a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 1.2 g / l). In addition, 44% had ingested drugs and 25% psychotropic drugs. The most detected drug was cannabis (59.8%), followed by cocaine (51%). As for the combinations of substances, the most prevalent were alcohol and cocaine (39.1%) and alcohol and cannabis (28.3%). The comparative study from 2008 to 2018 of the number of drivers killed in incidents with positive results for alcohol has registered a progressive downward trend in this decade: it goes from 30.9% in 2008 to 26.5% in 2018. However, the trend is reversed if we address drug consumption: it increases almost 9 percentage points from 2008 (10.7%) to 2018 (19.1%). More specifically, since 2016 there has been an upward trend in the consumption of cannabis and cocaine.

Regarding pedestrians killed in road traffic incidents and subjected to an autopsy, of the total of 143 cases analysed by the INTCF, 55 were positive for alcohol, drugs or both. In 67.3% of the cases it was men and 34.5% were aged over 50. Of these 143 cases studied, 45.4% had consumed alcohol, 21.8% drugs and 52.7%, psychotropic drugs. In 80% of pedestrians who died with positive results in alcohol, a blood alcohol level equal to or higher than 1.20 g / L was recorded. The data included in the report comes from the cases studied by the INTCF at the request of the judicial bodies for the analysis of the samples sent by the forensic doctors and the different Institutes of Legal Medicine. Although not all traffic incidents with fatalities are analysed in the institute, there is a sufficiently large and representative sample that allows offering statistically significant results that reflect the national reality.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT Arsenal were gently linked to Bale right at the start of the summer until someone leaked the fact they only had £45m to spend and that wouldn’t really cover Bale’s ponytail. But, in a cunning twist, it looks like the Gooners have been having us all on when it comes to the state of their finances.

Those days keep ticking away and the summer transfer window is now less than two weeks from shutting. In the old days, of course, we used to call it the start of the new football season – in 2019, we refer to the Premier League transfer window slamming shut and Gareth Bale being stuck in Madrid for another six months at least. The thing is, Real Madrid vetoing Bale’s proposed move to China has many knock-on effects. As well as shattering Gareth’s dream to head to the Far East and help the Chinese government finally make progress towards being a global player (not to mention the extra £1m a week he was going to get, allegedly), the Madrid board have caused a reverse domino effect in the Premier League.

If Bale stays under the perma-scowl of Zizou then there is no chance that Paul Pogba is going to get his wish and vanish from the Manchester United midfield like, well, he has been doing most of his United career. And if Pogba is staying at United, what does that mean for Lazio giant Sergej Milinković-Savić? He won’t be heading to Old Trafford – that’s what. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may even become reluctant to pursue Sean Longstaff any further if Pogba is to be sulking his way through 90 minutes every week next season. And there being no Spanish Baleout means that Christian Eriksen is also looking more and more likely to remain a Tottenham Hotspur player where he can continue to whack his corner kicks on to the forehead of the first man. He might well be joined by Real Betis schemer Giovanni Lo Celso but, as you know, we have been saying that all summer.

Not only have they chucked Real £15m for a year of Dani Ceballos, they’ve shelled out £27m for William Saliba – a player they don’t even want this season as they’ve sent him back to France to continue his footballing education. Talk about flashing the cash. And they are not done yet – reports suggest that flying winger Nicolas Pepe is the subject of a £72m bid and the deal could be done even before you read this. Crazy. And they are still in for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney. They really are! When you throw in the fact that Unai Emery has had a sensible haircut and Mezut Ozil has employed Sead Kolasanic as his personal bodyguard, things are looking A-OK at the Emirates. They’ve even picked the kids in preseason, apparently. And they’ve been good – which won’t matter a jot when they all end up being back in the U23s because Emery’s bought all these new players. Back up at Old Trafford, there’s still talk of United finding someone daft enough to take Romelu Lukaku off their hands. Inter are still believed to be keen

Chelsea are hoping he is so down in the dumps that he’ll not notice that Chelsea cannot technically take him to Stamford Bridge until next summer but are prepared to agree a deal now just because the transfer department are a bit bored and want to keep their hand in.

but are not as keen to spend £75m on him. Juventus have a cunning plan though, and it involves Pablo Dybala heading in the opposite direction with a bit of cash in an envelope addressed to Mr Ed. That should do it. Ronaldo must be delighted at the prospect of trying to find the space that Lukaku might vacate at some point. The Harry Maguire saga rumbles on with no obvious conclusion in sight. United have now lost Eric Bailly to another injury but even that hasn’t persuaded Woodward to make the move happen. Axel Tuanzebe though, Axel Tuanzebe. Chelsea and Everton are both taking Arsenal’s pursuit of Pepe as a sign that they are no longer keen on Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha having sufficiently messed with the player’s head over the summer. Everton are hoping that Zaha is that confused that he might just sign on the dotted line completely forgetting that Everton haven’t played Champions League football since 2005.

Your week in sport Well, that was a worthwhile exercise – wasn’t it?

Oh, and the Ashes starts this week so what actual good could have come of it?

Irish cricket got the double whammy of being allowed to play at the ‘Home of Cricket’ and, albeit briefly, being able to dream of a historic victory against England in the first-ever Test match between the two sides.

I guess the theory was that Jason Roy and Rory Burns would have got a ton each to show the world that England are capable of getting off to a good start against a red ball.

Before we poke the cricket finger-offun at the not-quite-four-day affair, it has to be questioned who on earth thought this match was a good idea? After all, it’s not as if we are short of cricket this summer. The small matter of the World Cup has only just sobered up and Joe Root, Jason Roy, Moeen Ali (hey, he did some fine work as 12th man in the latter stages of the tournament) et al were asked to don the whites and have a gentle friendly against those plucky little Irish cricketers from another side of the sea.

eleven managed to get 92, finally answering the question of “who can actually open the batting for England against Australia?”

Well, that went well, didn’t it? Tim Murtagh knows a thing or two about bowling at Lords and he seemed to let some of the other Irish bowlers in on the secret – England were bowled out for 85 before lunch on the first day. It was, frankly, hilarious viewing. The Irish led, understandably, going into the second innings before England set them 181 to win. How did they set them 181? Because Jack Leach, the nightwatchman-number-

the first ball of the third day. Sadly for them, England’s bowlers (plus a little help from quite a strange Lords track) were in no mood to join the batters in hanging their heads in shame – Woakes and Broad rattled through easily enough. Ollie Stone was a winner from the match, getting himself in the squad with some decent pace – and Jack Leach probably didn’t really expect to find himself in the Ashes squad and therefore wasn’t surprised. Jofra Archer, thankfully, has got over his side strain and will be unleashed at Edgbaston.

Joe Denly would have come in at three and controlled the game from there meaning there was minimal work for Joe Root to have to do. Then Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes would have skittled the Irish twice and England could start to think about their Ashes squad injury-free – especially to pride and ego.

Newcastle fans were treated to a rare treat the other day – an interview with Mike Ashley. Suddenly, local reporters who have never asked a decent question in their life were strutting around as if they were Jeremy Paxman. It wasn’t a good look. Or a good interview for that matter…

Jason Roy also looked more comfortable the second time round, slowly slipping into his ODI groove and giving it a bit of tap – Roy did enough, as expected, to get an Ashes call. But, again, other than that nobody else did anything other than damage their reputation with the bat. Jonny Bairstow heads into the 1st Ashes Test with a pair in the book and Moeen Ali must have been expecting to be dropped for the second time in a month considering his batting at Lords. Joe Denly will bat at three against Australia unless someone can blackmail Joe Root into doing what is surely best for the team – surely someone has some dirt on him somewhere? Ireland gave themselves the chance of winning their lottery, cleaning up the last wicket of England’s second innings with

And so we head into the Ashes understanding why Australia decided to play an inhouse match rather than risk the kind out outing England had. My guess at the XI to play at Edgbaston goes something like this; Burns, Roy, Root (yes, I think someone will scare him into doing it), Stokes, Bairstow, Buttler, Ali, Woakes, Archer, Broad, Anderson/Stone. Oh, and England to win the Ashes – of course.

The Celts Golf Society MATCH FISHING REPORT The final match of the Summer Series was fished on the river Segura at Murcia on 23rd July. When we arrived there we believed all the work had been completed, but there was a dumper truck and a gang of workmen planting trees, and the foreman had told us we could not fish. I showed him the authorisation we had received from the Murcia Federation and he advised his concern about the fishing poles and pole rollers blocking the road, I explained I would make it a feeder rod only match and all the tackle would be tight against the wall or at the pegs to keep the road clear, which he was happy with and allowed us to go ahead and fish the match. It was a good days fishing but very hot and Ian Brown fishing the feeder had 22 fish for 22.740kgs taking the top spot, I was second with 14.920kgs and coming in third was Richard Wood with13.360kgs. 1st Ian Brown with 22.740kgs 2nd Terry Screen with 14.920kgs 3rd Richard Wood with 13.360kgs

Last Sunday we celebrated our May Championship game. The tournament was agin well supported with over 80 players. The competitions committee on the day were marshalled by Philip Mountford who had drafted in Kenny McGeehan and Jane Knight to assist with the absence of Camillus and Terry who are back in Ireland for communions. Well done to all. The course is presented in immaculate condition although the greens are just a tad slow. To the staff in the pro-shop, jean and Jose, thank you for your attention to detail and for preparing the cards and collating the results. Gloria, Maria and the Vanessas and all the kitchen staff well done as always, we were treated to some lovely tapas, thank you. Our club captain James Hayes was on hand to present the prizes, James is feeling a little under the weather and we wish him a speedy recover. James again made the point of thanking all the organisers and all those who

Do not wait until it is your turn to play to start your routine, putting on or taking off your glove, marking and cleaning your ball, selecting your club, measuring your distance for your shot etc. all of these can be done in advance and this will help the smooth flow of the game. We have a waiting list in operation at the moment for membership at La Serena, however membership of The Celts is always available. If you would like information on joining our club or entering a team in any of the federation events why not send an e-mail to johnobrienalicante@gmail.com or call 615466398.
