Huge sewage spill On Friday, 8 August in the middle of the day and in the middle of the peak holiday season, a huge sewage spill engulfed the streets of central La Zenia. Torrents of dirty, stinking sewage estimated at 56,000 litres - poured down the main street, Avenida Villamartin, for hours. Locals, tourists, pedestrians and motorists near the busy La Zenia Boulevard were horrified and nauseated by this shameful spectacle. Other people it passed on its downward path towards the flagship La Zenia Beach, retreated from pavements and terraces. Orihuela Town Hall congratulated themselves on prompt action to stop the spill reaching La Zenia beach where hundreds of holidaymakers were obliviously enjoying themselves. However, the local community wants to know why it happened at all and once again is questioning the Orihuela

government’’ investment in the coast. For many years, local poitical party C.L.A.R.O. has denounced the inadequate infrastructure installed for dealing with Orihuela Costa’s waste water while the Town Hall has continued, year after year, to grant building licences for thousands of new homes increasing the population and increasing the pressure on the infrastructure until it reaches breaking point, which is what happened on Friday. A C.L.A.R.O spokesman said: “Inadequate infrastructure, inadequate services, this is the story of Orihuela Costa whose residents contribute 50 percent of Town Hall income only to see it spent in Orihuela city and surrounding villages which once again provided the governing political parties, PP and Ciudadanos, with their supporting votes.

BITE SIZE HMA Simon Manley NEWS: bids farewell to UK The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has published a Municipal Ban dated 22nd July 2019, which will be placed across the commercial and hospitality establishments and buildings in the streets and avenues through which the first stage of La Vuelta will pass. The time trial stage of La Vuelta Spain takes place on 24th August and its itinerary runs through the street of Torrevieja. Therefore, from 1pm on 24th August until 10pm on the same day, the street must be free of any type of vehicles and the decree will cut traffic during the same period of time, with traffic and parking being totally prohibited. The Mayor said: “Given the importance that the event has for our city, I beg for maximum collaboration from all citizens.”

Charity minibus appeal A minibus appeal to be held in Catral Park, aims to raise money for a vehicle for use by the charity for Elche Children’s Home. The event will take place on Sunday 1st September from 10am to 6pm, with local entertainer Rebecca Holt singing between 1pm and 4pm. www.viajesrosatours.com info@viajesrosatours.com I leave my almost six years as HMA to Spain with a wealth of wonderful memories of this fantastic country. I understand why so many UK Nationals choose to live and visit here. One of the tremendous privileges of this job has been to meet many of you, the British Nationals involved in your communities in so many different ways. Those of you volunteering with organisations like Cruz Roja, Age Concern and so many more; helping fight forest fires in Javea or looking after British cemeteries; those raising funds to help those in need; young people volunteering with organisations like Street Angels in Mallorca, helping to look after British visitors to the island or British councillors serving their local communities.

The footprint of British education relies on UK Nationals living and working here, as teachers and assistants in the many British schools and language academies. UK Nationals are also working in businesses across Spain - from bars and restaurants on the costas to the Big Five accountancy firms. It has been an honour to represent Queen and country and to serve you, the UK nationals living here. If I have one final message as we leave the EU, it is to make sure you, your friends and family are properly registered as residents. And check on your neighbours - make sure they are registered too. I wish you all continued health and happiness in your lives here in Spain.

SPANISH JOB LOSSES FORECAST UNDER ‘NO DEAL’ BREXIT A no-deal Brexit on 31st October would cause the loss of 1.2 million jobs across Europe, including 70,410 in Spain, according to a newly-released study by Belgium’s Leuven University. The impact study, commissioned by the Belgian government, showed that the UK leaving the EU without an agreement would cause major job losses in every country in Europe. France would lose 141,320 jobs, while Germany would suffer a massive 291,930 redundancies, the study said. But the country expected to suffer the most is the UK, where more than 500,000 jobs would be lost. The study looked at both the total number and the percentage of jobs that would be lost in each country. Ireland would be one of the worst-hit countries percentage wise, standing to lose 50,330 jobs. Belgium too would lose a higher percentage of jobs, with 42,390 redundancies expected in a nodeal scenario. The study also looked at the potential impact if the UK left with an agreement. In that case, the number of jobs lost across Europe would be smaller but still significant. Spain was one of the EU nations least affected by Brexit but was still expected to face 15,840 job losses even if Britain leaves the EU with an agreement.

The study took into account how supply chains across the EU and globally would be disrupted, as well as the countries’ direct trade links with the UK. To calculate the impact, researchers defined ‘leaving with an agreement’ as a situation where the UK leaves the EU but remains part of the internal market or the European Customs Union. For the projected no-deal scenario, researchers assumed the UK would leave the single market and fall back on the rules of the World Trade Organisation. Meanwhile, a separate data set published in the Financial Times this week showed how personal finances would be hit across Europe under a nodeal scenario, with the UK again worst hit. It showed that southern Spain is expected to escape the effects, but those in the north and centre of the country can expect to be around 50 euros worse off annually on average.

BITE SIZE Ryanair to close three Spanish bases NEWS: Continued from page 3

presented a campaign that is being carried out to change and improve the image of the city with the complete renovation of several tourist elements that have been neglected and not maintained. Councillor Martínez has declared that Torrevieja, as a tourist city, "needs to have a clean, beautiful and attractive image, not only for tourists but also for all its residents and neighbours". For this reason, several tourist elements have been focussed upon, such as the kiosk located in the Plaza de Waldo Calero, which has been renovated with minimal investment and that was completely abandoned and gave a bad image in one of the most central points of Torrevieja. Also, the monolith in the Plaza de la Constitución has been cleaned, the entrance panels to the port area have been renovated and many advertising boards have been exchanged for typical images of the city related to nature, fishing, salt flats and the sea.

Glass recycling The recycled glass in the containers in Torreiveja will be used to create the sustainable trophy that will be awarded to the winner of the First Stage of La Vuelta on 24th August. Locals can find the containers in the Paseo Juan Aparicio, next to the monument to the Man of the Sea, and another one in the Vistalegre Walk in front of the Casino. The Councillor for the Environment and Urban Cleanliness of the City of Torrevieja, Carmen Gómez Candel, and the manager of Ecovidrio, Roberto Fuentes, have launched a recycling campaign to raise awareness about the need of the recycling of glass containers and bottles during the celebration of La Vuelta Ciclista España 2019. According to the latest statistical data prepared, the citizens of Torrevieja recycled a total of 2,521,160 kilograms of glass last year, which translates into an average of 30.5 kg per inhabitant, greater than the national average of 18 kg.

The 5th Astoria Regatta The 5th Astoria Regatta and the 55th Cabo Roig Trophy, organised by the Royal Yacht Club of Torrevieja, will be held on 15th August. These two cups are already a key part of the sporting calendar. Appealing to amateurs, the coastal regatta which culminates in the Cabo Roig Trophy, has been the emblematic regatta of the Yacht Club for more 50 years. Whereas the Astoria Cup in its fifth year, is aimed at those with more experience and technique, although there is room the less skilled too, as two windward-leeward tests are planned. International Habaneras The Councillor for Culture, Antonio Quesada, has released the statistical data from the communication and social networks related to the International Habaneras Competition held recently in Torrevieja in the historic Eras de la Sal. Antonio Quesada explained that the 65th edition of the Contest has reached more than 630,000 people during the month of July, Continued on page 6

Low Cost airline Ryanair is considering closing its bases in Tenerife South, Las Palmas and the Costa Brava, sparking industrial action among its staff. Due to Spanish labour legislation stipulating a minimum period of notice before downing tools, employees of the Irish-based carrier cannot go on strike until September – although they have not confirmed the dates when air travel will be affected. The company has announced the closures in the Canary Islands will be on January 8th, but the shutdown of the Girona base is not yet a certainty and forms part of the ‘probable’ redundancies the firm has spoken of in the last few weeks. Cabin crew union SITCPLA and the Labourers’ Union Alliance (USO) held a meeting with Ryanair representatives today (Wednesday) through the company’s Inter-Confederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA), which was initially planned to discuss and negotiate a new collective working conditions agreement – but after the session, Ryanair

asked the unions for a further meeting, without arbitrators present, in which it planned to announce massive cutbacks within the firm including the closure of three bases in Spain. This immediately led to a strike announcement, since according to USORyanair’s secretary-general, Gustavo Silva, the firm’s behaviour in this respect is ‘abusive’. Ryanair announced at the end of last month that it would be making nearly 1,000 staff, both cabin crew and pilots, redundant in order to cut costs. This is in spite of its having been the largest airline in terms of passenger numbers in Spain so far this year, transporting over 23.5 million travellers to and from the country before even peak summer season started. And Spain is one of Ryanair's largest markets, after Ireland. Some of the redundancies are said to be due to the likelihood of air connections between the UK and Republic of Ireland, the firm’s most heavily-frequented route, being affected if a no-deal Brexit prospers on 31st October.

No IBI tax rise for Orihuela in 2020

Welcome announcement

The Councillor for the Treasury, Rafael Almagro, and Councillor SabinaGoretti Galindo, previously responsible for the department, have announced that the City Council of Orihuela will waive a 3 percent increase in the Real Estate Tax (Impuesto de Bienes Inmuebles or IBI) for the year 2020. “Last June we received a letter from the Ministry of Finance in which we were informed that we could take advantage of a rise to bring the cadastral values closer to the environment of 50 percent of the market value. In the case of Orihuela, the updated amount that the General Directorate of Cadastre plans to propose is 1.03. However, the Mayor has decided not to sign this increase and we believe it is great news for everyone,” Councillor Almagro explained. This IBI rise refusal adds to the line already started in 2018 by the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, to maintain this tax without increases

while possible. The decline of this increase will mean that the municipal coffers will not receive the additional 800,000 euros net year but, as Almagro has pointed out, “the City Council of Orihuela will be able to meet its 2020 obligations with the reduced revenues”. The Councillor pointed out that in 2018 the then expected increase of 7 percent for 2019 was cancelled and both Councillors agreed that “the taxpayers made a great effort in previous years, although it is true that then the cadastral values were very outdated in our municipality”. The councillors also reported that, after the liquidation of the year 2018, the general account for the City Council of Orihuela has 12,528,224.85 euros of remaining cash. Finally, Councillor Almagro indicated "that the Average Payment Period to suppliers is in 27 days, something that should be noted, because it means that we are within the deadlines established by law."

LET TERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi, I'm three weeks here in la Zenia on holidays. I'm absolutely shocked at the level of local public transportation. But I think worse is the lack of information on the same . Trying to go to Cartagena and it looks as I have a three hour bus journey. Or 120/150 euro taxi ride . Not even info in local shops as to how I can travel to local restaurants pubs and beaches . I would suggest a half page on local and further travel in you very good free paper and I have enjoyed reading it every day. Regards, Shane .

Good morning, As a long term resident in the Orihuela Costa and a President of a local community, I fail to understand the attitude of the Council to the area, considering the amount of financial income they receive. On day three this week they did eventually manage to empty the two basuras in Calle Gibraltar Villa Martin. Unfortunately the overflow rubbish people have found the necessity to leave around the bins isstill there. Photos were sent to the Ayuntamiento. I cannot understand the owners of properties in the Orihuela Costa area not trying to show more anger in the way we are treated, especially when you see how our funds contribute to major projects in and around the Orihuela City. Perhaps some sort of petition with lots of publicity may be an answer? Having read your recent articles it does not seem that the new council will be putting a lot of financial support to the Orihuela Costa. It should also be taken into consideration the new buildings being built, without more funding for our basic requirements. Regards Sue Gell President Rioja IV

thanks to Facebook. The social network increased its reach by 11.5 percent compared to last year. The Facebook page had more than 4,700 visits and the interactions reached almost 40,000. Seventy publications were posted of which 26 were photographs, 20 videos and 24 links to the website. The greatest reach was achieved on July 23 with the performance of the UP Singing Ambassadors Choir of the Philippines, a video that was seen by more than 16,000 people, having more than 1,200 interactions and shared 144 times. The Twitter account of the Contest (@certhabaneras) experienced a slight increase in the number of users. During the month of July 47 tweets were published, registering 36,400 impressions. The profile received 1,178 visits and 71 times it was mentioned. Undoubtedly, the social network that makes the contest more visible is Instagram, which grew in July by more than 18 percent. The number of publications is 12, but the stories exceed 160. This social network specialising in photographs and videos is used to project the image of the contest, especially through its 'stories' to a younger audience. These forms of social media are mostly followed by women, between 25 and 44 years old, mainly from Torrevieja; whereas Facebook tends to be more male dominated.

Benidorm rape – three arrested Three of the five French men accused of gang raping a Norwegian woman and sexually harassing her friend in Spain's popular coastal city Benidorm, were remanded in custody without bail in the early hours of Friday morning, following an order from the instructing judge. The other two men accused were given provisional release. The judge overseeing the case issued the order after hearing testimony from the suspects, four tourists aged 19 and an 18-year-old who were on holiday in the popular tourist destination in Alicante province. The judge also heard from the two victims, aged 20, who were spending the summer vacation in the nearby town of Alfaz del Pi, and met the suspects on Wednesday via the social app Tinder. After arranging to meet in Benidorm, the group decided to go back to the apartment the French men had rented. One of the women left after being allegedly sexually abused, while her friend decided to stay. When the two women met up again hours later, the friend said she had been gang raped after

the other left. The victims then went to a health center at 1.45am in Alaz de Pi, where they explained what had happened and underwent a medical examination. A doctor informed the Civil Guard and officers arrested two of the men at 4am and the other three, half an

hour later. According to the women, the men were planning on returning to France the next day. The suspects were taken to a courtroom in Benidorm at 11.25am on Thursday and gave their testimony after 5:30 pm. They are being helped by a lawyer from the French consulate, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

I don't want the responsibility My younger brother was born with mental difficulties. He has been cared for by my parents who refused any social services help, not even day centres or respite for them. I am now in my 50s and married. My parents seem to have assumed that I will take my brother in, when they are no longer around. I feel very resentful about this. I love my brother - all their money and energy went on him understandably, but I felt sidelined and as though my needs did not count. I had to shelve my dreams of going to University.

Messy neighbours Our new neighbours are treating the front garden as a junk yard. It’s now so bad, that we have seen rats wandering about. Our children can’t play out, and are scared to walk passed their property. We have said something to them, but have been told that the husband has to keep these items for his building business. When we said we had seen rats, they got all defensive and said we were lying, and to mind our own business. We asked them if we could re-build the party wall, which we think is our responsibility, and they became quite hostile. We can’t even consider moving, because no one will want to buy our place.

I understand how you feel, you want to be his brother, not his carer. And you have your own family to consider. He of course would have benefited greatly from professional services all these years. Please talk to your parents about getting him some social help now, and let them know that you cannot provide him with a home. Don’t feel guilty about providing good social care and accommodation for your brother when the time comes. In the right environment the afflicted can flourish, and you can visit regularly.

The fact that you have seen rats, suggests a health hazard. I would go along to your local Town Hall to firstly confirm who is responsible for the party wall, and to see if there is anything that they can do to help with the problem of the junk.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP: Mixed data, cheaper houses It was a slow week for the pound. Economic data were few and far between and the Brexit rhetoric was muted by the Parliamentary recess, though still mostly unhelpful. Sterling made ground against the Commonwealth dollars and lost out to the euro, the safe-haven yen and Swiss franc. The purchasing managers' index readings for construction and services delivered the usual contradiction. At 45.3 in July, construction was closer to breakeven than the previous month's 43.1, but still uncomfortably far into the shrinkage zone. By contrast, services came in at 51.4, more than a point higher on the month and above forecast. The BRC's survey of like-forlike retail sales in July found them 0.1% above the same month last year, i.e. almost flat. The Halifax and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors reported falling prices for UK residential property. EUR: Italian election looms Some of the European economic data were quite good, even those from Germany. German factory orders jumped 2.5% in June, more than making up for the previous month's 2.0% decline and smashing analysts' forecast of a 0.5% increase. Industrial production was less impressive though, dropping 1.5%. The purchasing managers' index readings from Germany followed a familiar

pattern, with manufacturing at the bottom of the EU pile and services at the top on 54.5. The most encouraging pan-Euroland figure was retail sales, which jumped 1.1% in June. Investors were sufficiently unworried by the data to make the euro one of the top performers. It added more than one US cent and strengthened by seven eighths of a cent against sterling. The breaking news at the end of the week came from Italy. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has called for an early election because the coalition between his Liga party and the Five Star Movement is not working. USD: China trade war escalates again Between Monday and this Friday morning, the dollar hardly budged relative to sterling. It is a net quarter of a cent lower on the week and has given up a cent and a half to the Swiss franc. Where Britain has Brexit, the US has Trump's trade war against China, with all its attendant nuisance. The week began with the US Treasury accusing China of being a "currency manipulator". That status would normally result in economic sanctions but China is already sanctioned up to the hilt. Trump also went in to bat again about what he sees as the Federal Reserve dragging its feet in easing monetary policy. He wants it to "Cut rates bigger and faster".

Health insurance hike under ‘No Deal’ Brexit Health insurance for British families holidaying in Spain could skyrocket under no-deal Brexit. Millions of families could see holiday bills skyrocket if Britain leaves the EU without a deal due to the loss of European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC). It comes as holidaymakers are already seeing their holiday spending money shrink, with the pound plunging to record lows against other currencies. More than 4.5 million under-16s carry the

cards, which give travellers the right to access state-provided healthcare while travelling in Europe, either free or at a reduced charge. But the cards would become redundant in a no-deal scenario, leaving families on the hook for their own health insurance as they go on holiday. Labour’s Deputy Leader Tom Watson said: “The Brexit chaos caused by the Tory Party could mean that millions of families face extra charges to go

on holiday. “Over the school summer holidays, families across the country will have saved and planned for a holiday to spend special, quality time together, but this Prime Minister’s mishandling of Brexit could make holiday prices rocket. “Boris Johnson ’s reckless, senseless approach to Brexit will leave working families worse off. He must urgently rethink and take no deal off the table.”

Research carried out by Labour suggests travel insurance for a couple in their 70s to go to Spain would cost an extra £108. NHS guidance says access to healthcare in the EU is ‘likely to change’ if Britain leaves the EU without a deal. The guidance urges people planning to travel on or after 31st October, 2019 to buy travel insurance ‘as you would if visiting a non-EU country’. Spain has publicly committed to healthcare access for resident and visiting UK nationals.

Irish tourists use Monopoly money to pay bar bill

A pair of Irish holidaymakers were arrested and charged with minor fraud after attempting to pay for their drinks with Monopoly money. The unnamed lads, both 18, were said to be drunk at the time. They found some Monopoly bank notes on the floor in the bar they had entered in Magaluf’s Punta Ballena strip, famous for its nightclubs and pubs and also as a holiday hangout for young Brits. According to the bar, these notes had been props for a promotional game earlier in the night, but were clearly not legal tender. A waitress spotted the young men paying for their drinks with them, and called the police. Their pockets were said to be ‘stuffed full’ with the Monopoly money. They were arrested, charged and later released on bail.

Herbs you can grow indoors move the pot to your coolest indoor spot (like your basement) for a few days. Then place it in your brightest window. Oregano Your best bet is to start with a tip that has been cut from an outdoor oregano plant. Once you've then planted that tip in a pot, place it in a south-facing window. Parsley You can start parsley from seeds or dig up a clump from your garden at the end of the season. Parsley likes full sun, but will grow slowly in an east- or westfacing window. Add that just-picked taste to your meals – even in the depths of winter when its windy and wet - by growing herbs indoors all year long. You won't even need special any special equipment as long as you give them plenty of water and sunshine. Keep these plants on a kitchen windowsill to take your cooking to the next level. How to Grow Herbs As a general rule of (green) thumb, place your herbs in a spot that gets at least six hours of sun daily. To test the strength of sun turn off all lights on a sunny or partly sunny day, and periodically check to see how much natural sunlight there is. Here in Spain you also need to check that the herbs aren’t in direct hot sunlight all day long. In addition to sunlight, all herbs need to be planted in pots with good drainage. If you're concerned that the

drainage holes will ruin your tabletop or windowsill, use a saucer or liner to catch any excess water. For specifics on watering and sun exposure, follow this guide. Basil Start basil from seeds and place the pots in a south-facing window; it likes lots of sun and warmth. Bay It's a perennial that does best using the container gardening method. Place the pot in an east- or west-facing window, but be sure it does not get crowded. Bay needs air circulation to remain healthy. Chives At the end of growing season, dig up a clump of chives from your garden and replant it in a pot. Leave the pot outside until the leaves die back. In early winter,

Rosemary Start with a cutting of rosemary and keep it in a moist soilless mix until it roots. It grows best in a south-facing window. Expect your kitchen to smell fresh throughout the cooler seasons thanks to the pungent scent of this herb — it acts like a natural air freshener! Sage Take a tip that was cut from an outdoor plant to start an indoor sage plant. It tolerates dry, indoor air well, but it needs the strong sun from a south-facing window. Thyme You can start thyme indoors by either rooting a soft tip that was cut from an outdoor plant or digging up and repotting the entire thing. Thyme likes full sun but will grow in an east- or westfacing window.

New dates for summer wine tasting and brewery visits The well‐known and much loved ‘Wine Tasting with a Difference´ tours are taking the local community by storm and due to popular demand have now added more summer dates offering extra opportunities to see the vineyards in their summer glory. These dates are: 19th August and the 12th and 26th September. You will need to book quickly though as the chance to experience not only a new and exciting Bodega but a beer brewery as well is proving a huge hit with locals and holidaymakers alike and at just 25€ it’s no wonder. Begona has been hosting trips and tours for several years and has helped hundreds of people to enjoy a taste of the ‘real Spain’. To book you place and arrange pick up call

Begona on 622 188 772. This wine of this bodega has an excellent reputation and is very popular. Casa de la Ermita’s vineyards are farmed under the supervision experts to obtain the best grapes in the Jumilla region. While Monastrell is the most popular variety in the area, Casa de la Ermita has succeeded in adapting to other varieties from different parts of the world, such as Petit Verdot, Merlot, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon. The tour begins with your pick up from one of the local meeting points and travel to the Bodega, stopping for breakfast on the way, which is included in the price. Once in Jumilla the group will be given a guided tour of the old quarter of the city. The tour will be given in English by a local guide, who will point out the hidden gems, as well as all of the heritage and cultural landmarks. On arrival at Casa de la

Ermita you will visit the on‐ site wine museum which tells the story of wine making from a centuries old farming tradition and its evolution into a state‐of‐ the‐art science and from there the tour will continue into the brewery which makes artesian beers. Although not as old as the wine making, Casa de la Ermita takes its beer brewing just as seriously and as passionately, both of which can be tasted in the quality of it beers. The tours will be followed by a three‐course‐ lunch of traditional local and regional dishes and, of course, a chance to taste the wines of the Bodega before ending the day at the Casa de la Ermita shop, where you can purchase the delights on offer.

Farewell to Victor Spain has the highest proportion of firsttime mothers over 40

Victor Edward Dellar 10/12/1941 14/07/2019 A group of local ex pats gathered at Jilly's Bar in Lago Jardin 2 recently, to say farewell to one of their friends. Victor Dellar, who lived just a short walk from Jilly's Bar, passed away on 14 July in UK after an illness. Vic's son James and his partner Ben had returned to Lago Jardin after the Funeral Celebration in Woolensbrook Crematorium, to say thank you to Shirl Dixon and the friends who had helped Vic during his time in Torrevieja hospital. Shirl had organised a collection in memory of Vic and the collection tin was opened on the night as friends congregated for a final farewell. Vic had been a volunteer at Reach Out for some time and enthused about the work he carried out there. James confirmed that Vic had spoken to him quite often about his volunteering and enjoyed every minute he spent in Reach Out helping prepare food parcels for the needy families, and this was where he wished the collection to be donated. When the tin was opened and the collection counted there was more than 470 euros, and this gradually rose to an

amazing 540 euros with patrons and friends adding to the coffers as they arrived. David Young, Secretary of Reach Out accepted the collection on behalf of the Charity. David presented Certificates of Appreciation to both Jilly's Bar and El Capitan for their kindness and support, and thanked all those present for their generosity. The donation will be earmarked for the Families section where Victor had volunteered.

Spain has become the country with the highest proportion of first-time mothers over 40 in the European Union. According to figures from the EU’s statistic agency Eurostat, based on 2017 data, 8.8 percent of women in the country were over 40 when they gave birth to their first child. In the previous 2015 study, Italian women had the greatest tendency to come to motherhood late. The phenomenon in Spain has been building over the past decade, with births from mothers aged 40 and over rising 63 percent, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Spanish youth are among the latest to leave home in the EU (average age is 29), while the average age for first-time mothers is 31. Figures show an average of 1.25 children per woman in 2018. A number of experts point out that more than half the women who are not mothers would have liked to have had children but a prolonged wait due to the lack of secure employment, difficulty finding an affordable place to live and a lack of state subsidies, has worked against them. Other women simply prefer to be older mothers, a cultural shift based on the desire for greater economic and professional stability. Motherhood at 50 Italy and Spain also lead the EU when it

comes to giving birth at 50 and over – which contrasts sharply with the 92% of Europeans who have their first child between 20 and 39.

“Methods, such as assisted reproduction, allow for childbearing age to be extended but there are no miracles,” says Albert Esteve, director of the Demographic Studies Center at Barcelona’s Autonomous University. “The fertility statistics in Spain show that 25-30 percent of childless women at 40 are not mothers because they cannot get pregnant.” According to Esteve, there are economic reasons behind the statistics. “We are among the countries where independence happens later due to the lack of job security, low salaries and difficulty finding a place to live, factors which mean that people cannot leave home when they want to.” The European birth map highlights a clear divide between trends in the South, where there are less young mothers and more mature ones, and the

East, – Bulgaria and Romania – where one out of every eight babies has a mother under 20. Hungary and Slovakia come in behind Bulgaria and Romania which have the highest percentage of young mothers, and very few first-time mothers over 40. Together with a higher fertility rate and lower life expectancy, this means the East is getting younger while the South is getting older. In Spain, it is becoming increasingly rare to have children before the age of 30 – 60.2% of first-time mothers are between 30 and 39, the highest figure in the EU. In Greece, Ireland, Italy and Luxembourg, women are also more likely to give birth for the first time in their 30s than their 20s. “If couples leave it later and later to have children and women become mothers when they are more mature, many will end up not being able to have children and this is what is happening in Spain,” says Diego Ramiro, a demographic expert at the Spanish National Research Council. “More than 20% of women born in the 1970s will not have children. We have not yet caught up with Japan where the figure is almost 30 percent, but there could be long-term consequences. For example, when people get old, they won’t have a family network to look after them and other care systems will have to be put in place.”

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital and most populous city of Argentina. The city is located on the western shore of the estuary of the RĂo de la Plata, on the South American continent's southeastern coast. "Buenos aires" can be translated as "fair winds" or "good airs". Buenos Aires is a top tourist destination, and is known for its preserved Spanish/European-style architecture and rich cultural life. Buenos Aires is a multicultural city, being home to multiple ethnic and religious groups. Several languages are spoken in the city in addition to Spanish, contributing to its culture and the dialect spoken in the city and in some other parts of the country. Culture Strongly influenced by European culture, Buenos Aires is sometimes referred to as the "Paris of South America". The city has the busiest live theatre industry in Latin America, with scores of theaters and productions In fact, every weekend, there are about 300 active theatres with plays, a number that places the city as 1st worldwide, more than either London, New York or Paris, cultural Meccas in themselves Language In the early 20th century, Argentina absorbed millions of immigrants, many of them Italians, who spoke mostly in their local dialects (mainly Neapolitan, Sicilian and Genoese). Their adoption of Spanish was gradual, creating a pidgin of Italian dialects and Spanish that was called cocoliche. Its usage declined around the 1950s. Many Spanish immigrants were from Galicia, and Spaniards are still generically referred to in Argentina as gallegos (Galicians). Galician language, cuisine and culture had a major presence in the city for most of the 20th century. In recent years, descendants of Galician immigrants have led a mini-boom in Celtic music (which also highlighted the Welsh

traditions of Patagonia). Music According to the Harvard Dictionary of Music, "Argentina has one of the richest art music traditions and perhaps the most active contemporary musical life" in South America. Buenos Aires boasts of several professional orchestras, including the Argentine National Symphony Orchestra, the Ensamble Musical de Buenos Aires and the Camerata Bariloche; as well as various conservatories that offer professional music education, like the Conservatorio Nacional Superior de MĂşsica. As a result of the growth and commercial prosperity of the city in the late 18th century, the theatre became a vital force in Argentine musical life, offering Italian and French operas and Spanish zarzuelas. The RĂo de la Plata is known for being the birthplace of tango, which is considered an emblem of Buenos Aires.

BA Emergency landing in Valencia Many passengers on board the British Airways flight that was forced to make an emergency landing in Valencia recently have complained on social media and to the press about the lack of action and information from the airline. The plane encountered problems as it was trying to land when smoke filled the cabin due to an alleged fault in one of the plane’s engines. The passengers said they were surprised oxygen marks did not drop down given the amount of smoke, which even affected visibility in the cabin, as seen in various videos. Three people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, while others suffered minor scratches and bumps from the falls, as well as anxiety attacks. The Airbus A321 was carrying 175 passengers, including one baby. Passengers were filmed panicking in a smoke-filled cabin on a British Airways flight. Footage showed people being evacuated from the plane in Valencia earlier today after it was forced to make an emergency landing due to the fault. The video was shared by Miguel J.Galindo who said his daughter Balma was on British Airways flight BA422 from Heathrow to Valencia. He wrote: ‘I was not on the flight, it is my daughter Balma who was flying. ‘She is OK now but apparently they flew for 10 minutes with cabin full of smoke,

no info from crew and oxygen masks failed to release. Lucy Brown, who was flying with her children, said the experience was ‘terrifying’ and ‘felt like a horror film’ She added: ‘There was no communication – the air hostess was trying to use tannoy but nothing was working. ‘Thankfully it happened 10 mins before we landed and everyone clapped as not sure pilot could see.’ She said everyone was safe. A British Airways spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that British Airways flight BA422 from Heathrow to Valencia has been involved in an incident today. ‘The aircraft, an A321, has landed and all customers and crew have disembarked. ‘British Airways

teams are assisting customers who are in the airport terminal.’ After the incident, British Airways said in a statement: “Flight BA422 from Heathrow to Valencia experienced a technical issue on its landing approach into Valencia. All our customers were evacuated safely by our crew and met by the airport’s emergency services. “There were 175 customers on board the flight, with six cabin crew and two pilots. Three customers were taken to hospital as a precaution and have since been discharged. The safety of our customers and crew is always our highest priority. In addition to our team on site, other British Airways team members have arrived in Valencia to help our customers and our local airport partners with anything they need.”

Bingeworthy Box Sets The Killing Based in part on a popular Danish TV series, `The Killing' is a moody, character-driven detective procedural that weaves a murder mystery through a full season or more. The stories unfold through the eyes of Sarah Linden, a dedicated detective with the Seattle Police Department who at first is assigned to mentor Detective Stephen Holder, formerly of the narcotics division. While their varied, pockmarked backgrounds produce two distinct investigative styles that at times clash - she's by-the-book, he's freewheeling - the partners manage to pull together in the name of justice, even after Linden makes a decision that changes both of their lives.

In Treatment Middle-aged psychologist Paul Weston (Emmy nominee and Golden Globe Award winner Gabriel Byrne) confronts some uneasy truths about his own life while conducting therapy sessions with his patients. Based on an award-winning Israeli television series, each episode focuses on one specific patient -- either a patient of Paul's, or Paul himself, in therapy with his own psychotherapist (Dianne Wiest).

Weakness, exhaustion, vertigo and headaches, main consequences of this heatwave Specialists recommend not engaging in outdoor sports at high temperatures, as well as hydrating regularly, and paying special attention to children and older people.

A

s the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología [State Meteorology Agency] reported, a heatwave is expected this weekend in the Valencian Community and Murcia, during which daytime temperatures will peak above forty degrees, with tropical nights. Among the most common disorders we can face, if we don’t take the necessary precautions when dealing with high temperatures, according to the specialists at Quirónsalud, the most noteworthy are weakness, a state of confusion, vertigo, headache, exhaustion, and a feeling of nausea accompanied by anxiety and sweating. Doctor Fulgencio Molina, Head of the Accident & Emergency Service at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia warns about the dangers faced by people who perform any type of intense physical activity when the air temperature is

too high, even young and healthy people; especially if they practice any type of sport, high temperatures make them more susceptible to suffering any type of injury.

According to Doctor Molina, “feeling cramps when performing physical exertion is a sign that tells us that we could be about to suffer a heat-related injury. Intermittent muscle cramps may be experienced in the limbs when engaging in sports.” These cramps are often related to accelerated breathing during exercise, as well as the amount of salts that are lost through sweat. Another of the large risk groups are older people, especially if they suffer from high blood pressure. As José Luis Lasaga, Coordinator of the Accident & Emergency Service at Quirónsalud Alicante, explains, “one type of medication used to treat high blood pressure are diuretics, which, together with the high environmental temperatures, make a patient lose more liquids, due to which it is vitally important for these patients to drink more fluids than they usually do.” Doctor Mayte Resta, Head of the Accident & Emergency Service at Quirónsalud Valencia, recommends, “not engaging in sports exposed

to high temperatures, and hydrating well before, during and after physical exercise. In the case of older people, a group more vulnerable to dehydration, they must remain in a wellventilated environment away from sun exposure, and maintain adequate levels of hydration; even if you don’t feel thirsty, you must drink water and offer them fluids regularly, even if they don’t feel like drinking.” And finally, with children, we have to take extra precautions; a child can become dehydrated even if we think they’re protected by shade, for example, on a beach under an umbrella. We must also look out for changes in behaviour, from irritable crying to lethargy, and regularly offer them water, even if they do not feel thirsty.

Comedian Cannon to join Emmerdale The 81-year-old comedian - known for being one half of double act Cannon and Ball alongside Bobby Ball - has signed up to appear in the ITV soap for a "brief stint", and he can't wait to head to the Dales. He wrote on Twitter: "Excited to be able to announce that I'm doing a brief stint as 'Derek' in @emmerdale !! Spending some time in the dales (sic)" Tommy's long-term sidekick Bobby is

also excited about seeing his good pal on 'Emmerdale'. He tweeted: "Can't wait to see Tommy in Emmerdale.... I am so chuffed for him..... (sic)" Karen Blick - who plays Lydia Hart on the show - wrote: "Brilliant news x" Dean Andrews (Will Taylor) added: "Welcome Tommy" Paddy McGuinness - who made a

guest appearance in 'Coronation Street' in 2015 - tweeted: "Congrats pal." The comedy pair are well known for their popular variety programme 'The Cannon and Ball Show', which aired from July 1979 to December 1988. Tommy will play a new character on the soap, but he isn't the only big-name star to have joined the show for a brief period.

Legendary England cricketer Ian Botham headed to the Dales in 1995 to open the then-newly refurbished Woolpack pub. Rugby player Martin Offiah was a guest at a charity rugby match in 1996, and Wet Wet Wet singer Marti Pellow was a guest at Kathy Glover's (Malandra Burrows) leaving party in 2001. What's more, TV presenter Fern

Britton appeared in the show in 2005, and singers Tony Christie and Katherine Jenkins have also made cameos. Former footballer-turned-pundit Chris Kamara played himself in a brief Dales cameo in June.

Pre-made foods you should never buy Even the biggest fans of kitchen shortcuts must admit that there are some foods for which one ought not cut corners. Here’s a list of which presliced, pre-chopped, pre-made items to ignore at the store. Minced garlic The stone-cold truth is that pre-minced garlic tastes really different from the fresh stuff. Often it’s much more pungent, too: Garlic’s signature flavour comes from a compound called allicin, which forms when its cells are ruptured (i.e.: cut). That flavour tends to build right up until the moment you use your garlic. Consider, too, that the nature of garlic’s taste changes depending on whether it’s whole, sliced, crushed, minced, or microplaned. Each preparation entails a different use. Jarred garlic is a different animal than the fresh stuff, so buy your garlic in whole heads, and use a clove—or a bunch of cloves—at a time. If you’re making, say, a tomato sauce and need to roughly chop nine cloves of garlic, just hit them with the side of a knife to get the skins off more easily and throw them in a mini-prep. It’ll save time and frustration. Sliced mushrooms Any fan of mushrooms on a pizza can tell when her local pizzeria has switched to pre-sliced (or worse, started buying the jarred, watery kind). Presliced 'shrooms dry out, so on a pizza, you’ll notice papery little skins rather than plump, bodacious slices. Mushrooms also have a way of getting wonky over time in the refrigerator. Don’t add to the problem by buying them pre-sliced. Yes, it’s a timesaver, but those tend to go bad faster. Citrus juice Lemons, limes, and oranges are pernickety and want to be squeezed pretty much to order. (There’s

a reason you never see signs trumpeting “three-daysqueezed orange juice!”) Pre-squeezed juice just doesn’t tend to hold up very well, its flavour changes over time, and—if you’re buying it—it often comes with preservatives and sulfites. If you must go in that direction, check the label; otherwise, buy an inexpensive citrus reamer.

Granola Unlike yogurt, granola is a food that is absolutely worth making on your own. You can cook it on a baking sheet, control the amount of sugar and salt you add and make enough at one go to top your yogurt for a week or two. There’s a ton of great granola on the market, but it’s not cheap you can likely do better on your own by buying bulk oats on the cheap.

But the stuff you can make at home, usually haphazardly, adding a 2:1 ratio of olive oil and red wine vinegar to the tablespoon of mustard left at the bottom of the mustard bottle is much preferable. Add salt and pepper and maybe minced shallot, and shake the devil out of it. Or blitz up a green goddess dressing, and use that in marinades, too. If you’ve got five minutes, you can generally make your own dressing.

Bread returned because of too many seeds "The best thing since sliced bread" is a maxim that has been put to the test by one disgruntled Waitrose shopper in Gloucestershire. The customer was left so dissatisfied by a luxury loaf she wrote the shop a note stating it had "too many seeds" which had "ruined its character." The disgruntled woman, said to be in her 50s, bought the £1.49 Jackson's Seeded Bloomer from her local store in Cirencester. But hours later the vexed customer stormed back to the customer services till with the half-eaten loaf and a handwritten note. The note, attached to the bread, said: "Quantity of seeds has increased over the last 2 months. Character of bread has now changed. Not as good." She proceeded to complain to the customer service desk for 15 minutes before she was granted a refund on the Yorkshire-made loaf, other shoppers said. A female onlooker said: "I've never seen anyone take such a firm view on seeds. "The poor customer service worker had to hear the history of her bread buying. She had

apparently been buying that loaf for years. She really did seem quite upset. "I don't know how long she was there for but she was there when I walked in and was still there 15 minutes later. "If a company decides to change its recipe or get a bad batch, it's just one of those things. I'm quite bemused by the fact she ate half of it just to be sure. "She left after she had reassurance the complaint would be taken seriously and passed on. Jackson's marketing manager Deborah Dyson said: "The only change we’ve made to our bread recently is to remove palm oil and this has been at the request of our customers, but this hasn’t affected our bread in the slightest and there’s definitely no more seeds going into our seeded bloomer. The disgruntled woman - said to be in her 50s - bought the £1.49 Jackson's Seeded Bloomer from her local store in Cirencester. "Sorry to hear we’ve had an unhappy customer – we do have a white or a brown bloomer she might like to try instead," Jackson’s added.

Illegal firearms seized Travel back in time with ‘Google Maps’ of Ancient Rome in online clampdown Researchers at Stanford University have used modern technology to create a web mapping version of Ancient Rome. Their model, called ORBIS, consists of 632 sites spread across 10 million square kilometres of terrestrial and maritime space,

covering most of modern Western Europe and the Mediterranean coast in North Africa and the Middle East. The tool generates solutions for travel between any two sites depending on specific means and mode of transport and the months of the year, providing

different options based on time and expense. A journey that involved sailing across the sea or crossing a mountainous area, for example, would have been massively impacted by the weather. A trip from London to Arles — in Provence, France — undertaken in the summer would have taken 24 days using the fastest route, which entails sailing down the Channel, then down to the Bay of Biscay to reach Bordeaux and then travelling by land. The cheapest route would have required 35 days and involved sailing around the Iberian Peninsula. The shortest route in terms of kilometres, meanwhile, would also have been the lengthiest, involving 37 days to travel through France. This probably explains why soldiers and merchants were among the few people who travelled much during the Roman Empire.

One-hundred firearms have been seized and 27 people arrested in the second national operation targeting customers who bought illegal blank-firing weapons online. The suspects were arrested by the National Crime Agency (NCA) after buying the forward venting blank firing guns from sellers across Europe. While these weapons can be purchased with limited restrictions in many countries, they are illegal in the UK. As they can be readily converted to fire live ammunition, they represent a significant criminal risk. The operation, which focused around a week of action at the beginning of July, was co-ordinated by the NCA and involved police forces and Regional Organised Crime Units (ROCUs) throughout the UK, as well as the Spanish National Police (Comisaría General de Información). Simon Brough, Firearms Threat Lead at the NCA, said: “This is the second coordinated national operation we have run in partnership with forces and ROCUs which targets the online purchase of prohibited firearms. The number of guns seized highlights just how important it is for us to work with overseas partners to close down this vulnerability. “Collectively we have seized 100 illegal firearms – all of which are capable of inflicting harm. Some of those arrested were also involved with other serious criminality, including drug supply and fraud. These weapons represent a significant part of the European criminal market and these operations assist us in

reducing the numbers of guns circulating in the UK. “Some of those interviewed by officers stated they did not realise the weapons they had purchased were illegal. Whilst that is not an excuse, the NABIS surrender gives people the opportunity to hand in weapons anonymously and I would encourage anyone who has purchased one of these items without realising their legal status to make use of the surrender. “Gun crime in the UK continues to be relatively low compared to mainland Europe. However, we know that illegal firearms are used in acts of serious violence, as well as being used by crime groups to coerce and intimidate. “For this reason, suppressing their availability is a priority for the NCA and our law enforcement partners and we will continue to share intelligence and coordinate operational activity to reduce the numbers of illegal firearms in the UK”.

Fenty for dry skin Fenty Beauty is releasing a new foundation range specifically for those who suffer from dry skin. Fenty Beauty's Pro Filt'r Hydrating Foundation comes in 50 (!) shades—no surprise there—but it's formulated with grape seed oil and sodium hyaluronate to lock in moisture with the same sweat and humidity resistant formula of its predecessor. 'For the first time ever, medium to full coverage meets serious longwear in a hydrating foundation, with a perfectly smooth, natural finish that lets skin look like skin,' the brand explained. 'We’re talking natural—not dewy—like your skin just had a must-needed drink of water.' And it’s not just the formula that's different. The new hydrating foundation comes in a portable tube with a pump instead of a bottle. Trend Mood posted that in addition to the foundation, Fenty Beauty is also releasing an accompanying hydrating primer, and a long kabuki foundation brush for easy application. Launches in top stores across Europe on 15th August.

Best Strength Exercises You’re Not Doing E

very exercise in your strength program has a purpose — to help you build strength and muscle, burn fat and improve your fitness. While there’s a time and a place for nearly any exercise under the right circumstance, some movements are simply more effective than others. So how does a lifter ensure they’re making all the right moves? If you’ve plateaued or aren’t seeing the results

you’re banking on, it’s time to get back to basics with these moves.

Goblet Squat

Squats are an exercise many people struggle to perform safely and effectively. Luckily, the goblet squat is a great progression from a bodyweight squat before squatting with a bar. Because the load is held in front, the core works double-time to keep you tall,

while your legs work to control your movement down and stand back up. How to: Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell with both hands underneath the “bell” at chest level. Set your feet shoulder-width apart with your toes pointing slightly outwards. Push your butt back like you’re sitting in a chair and descend until your elbows reach the inside of your knees. Keeping your heels flat on the floor, pause at the bottom of the squat and return to a full standing position. If your heels, push your hips further back and work on partial ranges of motion until mobility and form improve. Repeat for four sets of 8-10 reps.

Pallof Press

The Pallof press is one of those movements that looks confusing, but it’s actually incredibly simple and beneficial. While you may not be hoisting heavy weight, the real challenge lies in resisting rotation. That makes this an ‘anti-rotation’ movement, forcing you to engage your entire core: obliques, abs, lower back, glutes and more. The Paloff press will build great usable strength while adding athletic definition through the mid-section. How to: Stand with your side parallel to the cable or band’s anchor with your feet hip-distance apart and knees slightly bent. Grab the handle with

both hands and pull it in towards your chest, maintaining tension on the cable or band. Keeping your chest high, squeeze through your stomach and press the handle away from the body, extending the arms straight. Be sure to resist any twisting or rotation. Continue to engage your core, and ensure you remain square to resist the rotational force. Bring arms back in to the chest and repeat for three sets of 10 reps per side.

Dumbbell Row

Most of us spend more time training the “mirror muscles” on the front of the body, and neglect what we can’t see, Developing a strong back is key to balance things out, improve posture and avoid injury. The dumbbell row can help achieve all that, in addition to

building a strong core and arms. The main muscles being used are the lats, traps and rhomboids, which

45

reinforce good posture by pulling your shoulders back. They also aid the core in stabilising your spine. How to: Grab a dumbbell and find a bench. Start with your left hand on the bench with left arm extended, while your right arm holds the dumbbell and right foot is on the ground. Retract your shoulders, brace your abs and pull the weight up until the elbow passes the side of the body. Lower the weight with control and repeat for three sets of 6-8 reps on each side.

Push-Up

The push-up might appear basic, but it’s one of the best exercises you can do. The functional movement is great for training the upper-body pushing muscles — the anterior deltoids, triceps and chest. It also requires you to engage your core and allows full range of motion in your shoulder blades. How to: Start on your knees facing the floor with your hands at shoulder-width and planted directly under the shoulders. Get into a plank by straightening your legs and supporting your weight with hands and feet. Squeeze your backside to keep your trunk engaged and lower your body slowly to the ground. The elbows should be slightly tucked — like arrows, rather than flared like the letter “T”. Descend until your chest is just above the ground and return to the starting position by fully extending your arms, and repeat.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

All those people complaining that the English Premier League starts earlier and earlier every year and most of the matches end up being played in weather conditions that would not look out of place in the middle of December. Yes, folks – the greatest show on Earth is back with some new multi-million pound signings (and that’s just in the Sky studio). The action got underway at Anfield where King Kloppo had spent the build-up talking down the fact that Liverpool had been pretty inactive in the transfer window. After all, he made the one signing that really counted on Friday night – bringing in West Ham reject Adrian to replace the finally-sold failed shot-stopper Simon Mignolet. I mean, nobody expected Adrian to actually play given that Alisson never gets injured, right? Yeah, about that. The Brazilian is out for between four and eight weeks after his calf gave away under the pressure of the new goal-kick ruling. Not that it really mattered – Liverpool were well on their way to sticking four past newly-promoted Norwich City in the first half-an-hour by this point and Alisson had managed to keep yet another clean sheet. Adrian comes on and Liverpool concede – coincidence? Most probably. Norwich did not embarrass themselves though, creating more than enough chances against the European Champions for the score to have ended up a little less flattering than the 4-1 posted – a win that saw Liverpool soar to the top of the table, something that was noted over and over and over and over again on social

media. Guys, it’s one match. Don’t go celebrating the title just yet. The transfer window was full of people who ended up in new jobs they didn’t really want and several that were stuck in ones they wanted to leave. Whether anyone was less impressed with his agent’s work than Jose Mourinho remains to be seen. Jose was snapped up on a free by Sky Sports and he made it very clear within ten seconds of Super Sunday that was only there until a proper job came up. That said, the prospect of Jose and Graeme Souness joining forces on their hatred for Paul Pogba was mouth-watering. Mourinho set his stall out nice and early, reminding his old employers that ‘City’s B team are closer to the title than United’ with a tone of voice that suggested he had absolutely nothing to do with the mess at Old Trafford. When asked how many teams could fight for the Premier League title this season, Jose responded with ‘four – Man City, Liverpool, Tottenham and City’s B team’. More importantly, it was the first time that Frank Lampard’s Chelsea had taken to the field under their new manager, Frank Lampard. And, to be fair to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, if football matches were judged off the first 15 minutes then they look like a very fine side. The problem is, they are not – and somehow Manchester United ended up winning 4-0. Yes, 4-0! The most expensive defender in the world led United to a clean sheet on his debut, though even Harry Maguire cannot take credit for the fact that both Tammy Abraham and Emerson smacked the ball against the same upright in the first-half.

Aaron Wan-Bissako looked like money well-spent in his first outing and Daniel James came off the bench to scuff the fourth but it was that 90second spell in the second 45 that killed off Frank Lampard’s Chelsea. United above Liverpool in the table? It doesn’t matter, it’s the first game of the season. There must be a weird glitch in the fixture computer that means Man City have to kick-off their title defence at West Ham’s Athletics Stadium each year – this season was no different and even with West Ham breaking their transfer record in signing their new defender Var, they got battered. Var was brilliant on his debut, once denying Raheem Sterling and oh so nearly helping Sergio Aguero miss two penalties. West Ham actually played quite well and if Issa Diop hadn’t sliced horribly into his own net they might have gone into the break level and playing the better football. The problem was, he did – and that was all the excuse City needed to step it up a notch or two. Pellegrini suggested City spent the first half ‘tactically fouling’. Don’t say that – it will upset Peppy G. Liverpool win 4-1 on Friday? No problem. City won 5-0, allowing all the pundits to get far-too-excited at the thought of another classic title race. Remember what I said earlier, folks – it’s only been one weekend. Tottenham were able to field something of a rarity against Aston Villa – a new signing made his debut. Better still, Tanguy Ndombele scored the equaliser meaning Spurs fans can now fall into the same trap as Arsenal fans all those years ago when they signed John Jensen. They think they’ve got themselves a goal-scoring midfielder. To be fair, they might have – I doubt there’s much mileage in the Ndombele-Jensen

Your week in sport England’s tactical ploys to dismiss the world’s greatest batsman have been so embarrassingly ineffective thus far that the thought of sandpaper must surely have crossed Joe Root’s mind. After desperately trying on numerous occasions to suggest the ball had gone out of shape and with Joe Denly as the most promising wicket-taking option, poor Joe must’ve thought to himself, ‘it’s only cheating if we get caught right? What would my crying look like on national television? They’d only ban me for a year wouldn’t they?’

Similarly despondent, the Barmy Army amongst other fans (not including those who say they only like T20) also pondered strategies. Brainwave after brainwave emerged and then, when all hope was seemingly lost, a statistical discovery surfaced: ’Smith is statistically worse against leftarmers.’ This was it, the chance to finally disrupt that irritating trigger movement, the chance to prove that Steven Peter Deveroux Smith is actually human – the chance to win the first Ashes test-match of the summer! Only problem being, they decided not to pick a left-armer… In all honesty, Smith’s average against left-arm seamers is still 65, compared to 67 with right-armers. Not bad for someone who looks as though they’re playing French cricket and fidgets more than Alex Hales in a WADA testing room. Looking at the figures in this way does not necessarily fill one with hope, but ultimately a left-arm option is something England have yet to try and therefore picking one represents no real risk. After all, Smith can’t bat any better can he? Surely? This is where Sam Curran comes in. England have named a 12-man squad for the Second Test at Lords on Wednesday,

with Jack Leach replacing Moeen Ali at long last and Jofra Archer in line for his test debut after Anderson was forced out through injury. Essentially it appears as though the final spot for next week will be between Curran and Joe Denly, yet the choice should really be a simple one.

Curran represents England’s best leftarm option by some distance. He naturally swings the ball inwards towards the right-hander, has previous experience of opening the bowling in Test match cricket and more crucially perhaps- he

comparison being honest. In the first half, I was as guilty as the next idiot muttering under my breath how Tottenham are better when Son plays and how they are better when Kane is injured. Naturally, Harry Kane popped up twice in the last ten minutes to net Spurs all three points. Villa were decent though and looked pretty good value for their half-time lead after John McGinn chased down a hopeful punt and slotted past Hugo Lloris. The Scot is the midfielder that Sir Alex Ferguson himself recommended that United went and bought this summer – that said, the last recommendation Fergie made to United didn’t go that well, did it Moyseh? When the final whistle went last season, did anyone really expect Steve Bruce to be the guy shaking hands with Unai Emery at St James’ Park on Sunday? As someone said expertly on Twitter, imagine waking up from a three-month coma and seeing a photo of Bruce shaking hands with Andy Carroll holding a Newcastle shirt. The game itself was pretty much what you would have expected from these two teams on a wet and windy day in Newcastle – minus Arsenal conceding a goal. Who knows, maybe the sight of David Luiz’s touseled locks on the sideline reminded Sokratis and Calum Chambers that their shirts were on the line? As ever it was down to YoPierre to apply the cutting edge and score the winning goal. Newcastle weren’t terrible, but there were some promising debuts from all those players Brucey persuaded Mike Ashley to splash out on. Graham Potter is already working his magic at Brighton. It’s worth remembering that Watford’s last two competitive matches have been an

absolute shellacking in the FA Cup Final against City and then a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Potter’s new charges on the opening day of the Premier League. Javi Gracia out, anyone? It wouldn’t be the first time Watford have changed a manager early in a season – maybe not quite yet though. Brighton were very good, and despite their fans moaning that none of their new signings started the match strolled to victory. I’ll tell you who were not very good – not very good at all; Southampton. This was, remember, the season where we would see ‘a new Southampton’ because they had a full pre-season with Ralph and had made a few new signings. Well, yes – it was a new Southampton of sorts. It was one that hit a low that not even Mark Hughes had managed to plunge to – a 3-0 hammering away at Burnley. Burnley had taken about three months to get off the mark this season, but found willing opposition in the Saints to make sure Turf Moor didn’t have to wait as long this time around. Beware the long punt on a windy day in Lancashire, that’s the only advice I can give to Southampton’s defence. Down on the South Coast, ‘a little fat lad from Sheffield’ completed his life by scoring Sheffield United’s first goal back in the Premier League. Club legend Billy Sharp scored a late leveller against Bournemouth to snatch a point for Chris Wilder’s men. Wolves were denied three points in the ‘7th place Derby’ by VAR. There was a lot of passing the ball around between them and Leicester but not a lot in the way of cutting edge. Finally, Crystal Palace’s 0-0 draw with Everton reminded both teams why they were so keen to have Wilfried Zaha in their starting XI. Entertaining, it was not.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com has dismissed Steve Smith before. Granted, this was only in an IPL encounter earlier this year, but nonetheless, it is something for England to hold on to. In comparison, Denly’s leg-spin was surprisingly not horrific in the first test, and at least he didn’t bowl beamers over the batsman’s head. Yet the realisation that he is no more than part-time eventually began to show and Smith pounced on anything that was remotely offlength. But Denly can bat some people may claim. Who will bat at number four otherwise? Both valid points to some extent, though ultimately it is evident that the series will be won or lost depending on whether England can dismiss Smith. In this way, England have to pick the strongest bowling line-up possible and this unquestionably includes Curran. From a batting perspective, Stokes is easily good enough both technically and mentally to succeed at number four. Added to this, people are quick to forget that Sam Curran is actually an exceptionally gifted batsman. In the T20 blast recently, Curran has been promoted to bat at three, and averages

over 70 in his last three games. Even if he does not succeed with the ball, he can contribute more than enough with the bat, and has done so at Test match level in the past. At just 21 years of age, Curran is only the second player ever to record three test-match half-centuries this young. He was England’s man of the series against India in 2018, saving the side multiple times after the inevitable batting collapses ensued. He performed well on the sub-continent last winter, has a better batting average than Woakes, Ali and Denly not to mention a better bowling average than Woakes and Stokes, England’s two main all-rounders. He may be young, but Curran has arguably been England’s best red-ball player in the last year and is more than ready for an Ashes challenge. He may not be regarded as a mainstay of England’s test team at the minute, but he is certainly playing like someone who should be. England still have every chance of winning at Lords next week, but if they don’t pick Curran, then they are setting themselves up to fail.

Watch your Speed! All this week, there will be intensified surveillance on the roads of Spain which will concentrate on trying to combat one of the most deadly contributing factors to road safety, inappropriate speed. The campaign runs this week and weekend, culminating on Sunday evening, when every available police and traffic officer will be patrolling the secondary road network, where most accidents occur. These officers will be supported by motorbike and helicopter teams. This campaign also coincides with one of the busiest periods on the road network, as many of the domestic tourists who have been enjoying an

early summer break return home. In addition, those already on holiday will be taking their usual short trips to the beach, shopping and leisure areas, and mixing with the traffic movements arriving and departing. Inappropriate speed is a contributing factor to many fatal and serious incidents, and is a factor that is entirely in the control of the driver. Remember, if you plan to drink or consume recreational drugs, these do not mix with safe driving ability, and so you should either avoid driving altogether, or choose a designated driver who will refrain from consuming these items. Prescription drugs can also cause problems when driving, so always check with your doctor or pharmacist. Mobile phones don´t mix well with driving either. Although we are permitted to use them for navigation when driving, we are not allowed to touch the device. This also includes when stopped in traffic or at traffic

Animal Dangers Although most drivers undergo at least the mandatory training before becoming qualified for the vehicle under their control, the same cannot be said for all road users, and one particular type are somewhat oblivious to the dangers that mixing with traffic can produce. Animals are capable of wandering freely onto the roads, and can be extremely hazardous if they come into contact with vehicles. For drivers, there are two road signs that warn of potential dangers, one which features a pictogram of a cowlike creature, this sign warns of the possible presence of domesticated or controlled animals, and the other sign, which features a deer-like animal in a state of prancing, warns

of the possibility of wild animals. Of course, it is possible that animals are present on any road and at any time. For the past year, parts of Spain have been testing a revolutionary barrier system that aims to reduce animal and traffic incidents, by creating an invisible line of protection between the vegetation and the roads. Invisible to the eye, the barrier is created by smell, and so the animals avoid the area, in theory. However, it is also worth remembering that animals may be around at any time and place and that the best drivers always drive in such a manner that will allow the vehicle to stop well within the distance they can see to be clear.

lights. You must pull over in a safe, convenient and legal place to either adjust your route guidance, or use any other element of your mobile phone. If you are not using it for navigation, the best option is to switch your mobile off whilst driving.

Las Ramblas Golf Society MATCH FISHING REPORT ABBEY ANGLING This week’s Open Match was held at the Embalsa De Pedrera on the 6th August. The heat wave continues with the temperatures still rising, but the wind had dropped and the weather was totally different to the conditions here last week, the banks remain very muddy as the water continues to drop. First on the day was Richard Smith with 12.500kgs fishing the feeder using pellet, in second place was Neil McBirnie with 12.040kgs fishing the feeder using pellet and coming in third was Danny Kerkoff with 7.380kgs fishing the pole and feeder using paste and pellet. We are fishing Open Matches during August; the first match of

the Winter Series is due on 3rd September. There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club. All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368.

RODS & REELS There are no matches being fished during August and the next match in the Summer Championship is on 4th September. There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423. Tight Lines TERRY SCREEN

Quesada Bowls Club Report by Dee Stephenson We may have had scorching temperatures but that didn’t stop the bowlers putting every effort into the Quesada-Greenlands Friendly Competition over the past 4 weeks! It proved to be a very successful and enjoyable series of matches against our near neighbours,

Greenlands. After the 4 evening matches Quesada was the overall winner with a cumulative shots difference of +64. There was a good turnout at the post match meal held at The Club, which was a nice way to round off the matches.

Mike Chapman

Results for w/c 5.8.19 Following on from last week, another fine performance from Mick Brentnall saw him in the winning team in Monday’s 6x6x6. Together with the fictional Albert, Dave Pulling and myself,a score of 84 points was enough to take the glory (well about 7 euros each!) In the sweltering heat Wednesday’s Stableford was a ‘Joker’ which meant that on two predetermined holes the scores were doubled. After a brief spell away Mike Chapman came back to annoy us and took 1st place with 42 points. In second spot was Nigel Price with 40, just edging out Richard Connock on countback. It was a rollover week for the ‘2’s and for the second week on the trot Joyce McClusky missed out as she doesn’t enter this little side competition. Those that did enjoy the

spoils were Graham Murray and Mike Chapman. The temperature had notched up a couple more degrees as we concluded the week with a high/low 2 ball better ball. Taking top slot, with an outstanding score of 46 points, were Richard Connock and Mike Mahony. In second place and just 2 points behind them, were Graham Murray and me again! Thanks this week go to Reg Akehurst for his thoughts on ‘How to properly line up your 4th putt.’ Another very enjoyable weekwith the course being in a fantastic condition at the moment. Welcome to some new members who I’m sure you’ll be reading about soon! Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell
