Brexit: Get the answers on deal or no deal Conservative MPs have been warned not to rebel against the government over Brexit, as opposition MPs plan legislation to stop no deal. A senior source from the whips office - which ensures MPs vote in

line with the party - said MPs who voted to block no deal would "destroy" the government's Brexit negotiating position. Rebels will have the whip withdrawn and be deselected, the source said. This comes hot on the heels of the Queen’s agreement to suspend Parliament as requested by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Parliament will be suspended just days after MPs return to work in September - and only a few weeks before the Brexit deadline. Boris Johnson said a Queen's Speech would take place after the suspension, on 14th October, to outline his "very exciting agenda". But it means the time MPs have to pass laws to stop a no-deal Brexit on

31st October would be cut. In light of the new developments the British Consulate in Alicante is running a series of pop-up events outside Overseas Aupermarkets (Iceland) in towns across the Alicante and Murcia provinces. Members of consular staff will be outside the stores to answer questions about Brexit, living in Spain and access to healthcare. British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris said: “As we approach the date when we will leave the EU, we recognise that British nationals may want to speak to us individually about their concerns and to check if there is anything else they need to do. By going to areas where there are a lot of British nationals, we hope to make this as easy as possible. There is no need to book an appointment. Anyone who wants to speak to someone from the Consulate can come along at any point between 9.30am and 2.30pm.” You can also stay up to date with the

latest news by signing up for email alerts to the Living in Spain guide on gov.uk and following Brits in Spain on Facebook.” Speak to an expert – local events: • 16th September - Cabo Roig - 9.30am to 2.30pm - Overseas Supermarket, Calle Cantábrico. • 17th September - Campoverde 9.30am to 2.30pm - Overseas Supermarket, Avenida de las Especias.

without licence City Council has levied a fine of 2,000 euros against the firm that began in April to build 170 homes on a part of the La Coronelita without a license. According to the resolution the local police detected that the works were being carried out without a municipal license on 4th April. The following day a decree by the then Mayor José Manuel Dolón, ordered the suspension of the works, which was notified to the developer on 2nd May. However, on 28th May, two days after the elections, the Local Police reported a breach of the order. A month later the Plenary meeting on 26th July decided to impose a coercive fine against the company of 2,000 euros and transfer the facts to the Prosecutor's Office. The company has continued with the activity - to a greater or lesser extent until recently despite the City Council's

warning that it would levy up to ten of these coercive fines until this order is fulfilled. The City Council has not sealed the worksite despite the breach. CVMm440A

The necessary urban planning instrument to grant the licenses, the detailed study, was approved in the ordinary plenary session in August with the absolute majority of the PP in the plenary. The councillor, Fanny Serrano ( PSOE ), ex-head of Urban Planning, who has questioned why the works continued after the suspension, was absent at the vote (due to a medical appointmet) and so her vote was recorded as abstention. The other councillor of the PSOE and Vox voted in favour. Cs, Los Verdes and Sueña Torrevieja abstained.

Lone under18 travellers now need parents’ permission Anyone aged under 18 who is travelling abroad without their parents will need signed permission from them and have to present this at the airport – even if they are accompanied by another adult, according to a law which will came into effect across Spain on Sunday (1st September). It even affects 16and 17-year-olds going on holiday alone or with a group of friends, and children travelling with grandparents, aunts or uncles. As is always the case at any age when travelling abroad, even within the Schengen zone, children leaving the country without their parents need to have their documentation in order – DNI, or national identity card for Spanish citizens, or passport, and passport only for nationals of countries which do not issue ID cards. The travel authority document must be acquired in person by one or more parents or legal guardians from the National

Police or Guardia Civil station, town hall, court or notary. Although only one parent is required to attend, he or she must have legal authority over the underage traveller – either custody of, or an access arrangement – unless both are present, the other needs to give

his or her permission. It is not known how far this may cause difficulties for mothers who do not have contact with the father, where the father is a donor through a private arrangement, or for fathers, where the mother is a surrogate and not an active parent. Some confusion is expected

around foreign children living in Spain, given that initial details of the requirements state their parents need to seek their travel permit from their Consular authority rather than from the police, courts, notary or town hall. Neither is it clear whether there will be a cost involved, and if so, how much. The new law could also affect under-18s travelling to Spain from elsewhere either on their own, with groups of their peers, or with other adults, even relatives. Airport governing body AENA, airlines, the Guardia Civil, interior ministry and other public bodies involved in any way in foreign travel and children's affairs will be releasing further information on social media in the next few days. Non-Spaniards living in Spain should seek further information from their Consulate or foreign office, via phone or email, or online.

This will a great opportunity for existing and potential new members to meet the leaders of the various sections to find out what is on offer and for new members to sign up to the U3A. Socially there is a Fun Quiz Night, hosted by Ricky Neil at Hi-Life bar Via Park 1 on 19th October open toU3A members, family and friends. Sports tourism kicks off The Councillor for Sports for Torrevieja, Diana Box Alonso has announced that two women’s football teams are about to visit the city. The Swedish clubs Vivala and Eker are visiting on an integration project, carried out across the Orebro area of Sweden, and they have come to enjoy Torrevieja and its sports and tourism offer. The teams will spend four nights in a local hotels and take part in several training sessions as well as enjoying all Torrevieja jas to offer including tourist visits, shops, restaurants and the beaches. The tour is sponsored by TM SportsTravel who are also involved in the Swedish Summer Soccer School that has taken place in Torrevieja for the past six years.

APAH Fundraising Animal rescue charity APAH has two up-coming fundraising events for the local community in September. The first is an End of Summer Sale at the charities shop in San Miguel de Salinas. The store has lots of lovely Summer clothes and with Autumn looming now is the best time to snap up those bargain buys. Of course, with the mild Spanish climate there will still be plenty of time to wear them before the seasons change. From now and for a limited period, all the clothing in our shop will be on sale for just 1 euro. The APAH store has limited storage space and so volunteers are hoping that the sale will prove popular partly to raise extra funds for the animals, and also so that they won’t have to find storage space for the clothes until next summer. The second event is a Fundraising Auction at the Sangria Wine & Tapas Bar in Pinar de Campoverde on Sunday 22nd September. A list of lots will be posted on the APAH Facebook page the week before the auction: ApahRescueSanPedro.

The opposition parties of PSOE and Sueña Torrevieja have asked in the last plenary session that the municipal government implements a municipal ordinance that regulates the use of urban mobility vehicles, especially electric scooters. As is happening in many other cities, electric scooters and all kinds of hybrid vehicles are taking to the streets of the city as a better alternative to the car. Although in the case of Torrevieja there is the added difficulty of the total lack of a bicycle lane network, which other cities have shared with scooter riders. The popularity of the electric scooter has already caused accidents. Especially with drivers who choose to use the road something also used by vehicles with

people with reduced mobility. Faced with the questions asked on this issue by the socialist spokesman Andrés Navarro, the Councillor for Traffic, Antonio Vidal, admitted that all legal claims for which the City Council is required for accidents in which these vehicles appear as the main parties involved are being filed because Torrevieja lacks local regulations and the state regulation is still very generic. Other municipalities, as in the case of Alicante, have implemented their own ordinance in which traffic is restricted along the road - depending on the type of vehicle and its power - users are obliged to protect themselves with a helmet, register the vehicle and have insurance.

Spanish mortgages plummet Eurozone interest has hit a new low and is expected to break all records at the close of August, having dropped to -0.354 percent. Although the official month-end figure will not be announced by the Bank of Spain until after the weekend, the plunge in the interest rate for the countries using the common currency is significant, having ended July on -0.283 percent. The lowest Euribor rate in 20 years was recorded just over a week ago on August 21, at -0.399 percent, although rose by half a percentage point since then – but the final full month of summer 2019 will almost certainly see it break the -0.3 percent barrier for the first time in history. For most of the last three-anda-half years, after the Euribor fell into negative figures for the first time in February 2016, homeowners and homebuyers were consistently warned by economists not to rely too much on their 'mortgage honeymoon' continuing, with forecasts of an interest rate rise always just around the corner. But it has never gone back up to 0% in all this time and plans by the European Central Bank (BCE) to increase it have constantly been shelved. The Euribor has been in freefall for many years in an attempt to

stimulate growth in the Eurozone by reducing prices, making credit cheaper, and homebuying more affordable, and to help households recover financially and enable them to spend more. Latest forecasts once again show that the BCE does not intend to increase rates until at least 2020 and, if it does so, this will be the first rise since 2011. Even this, though, appears less probable, with the Eurozone's economy having contracted in the past few months – including in its most financially-buoyant nation, Germany, whose GDP shrunk by 0.1 percent in the second quarter of 2019 – due to trade wars fuelled by Donald Trump's USA and by the continuing threat of an imminent no-deal Brexit. Spanish mortgages use the Euribor to set their interest rates, which are typically between 1 percent and 3 percent above the Eurozone figure. Unlike in other EU member States, such as the UK, where interest increases or falls are reflected immediately in variablerate mortgages, home loans in Spain are updated annually. This means payments remain the same for a full 12 months even on a variable rate, so if forecasts predict an increase, homeowners have plenty of time to plan and to

consider swapping to a fixed rate to prevent uncertainty. With the Euribor being so low and continuing to drop, fixed-rate mortgages in Spain are in a minority. In light of the latest Euribor fall, a typical mortgage in Spain – of €100,000 over a 25-year term – would, if due for review at the end of August, become €98 a year cheaper, or €8.21 a month. The lowest interest rate at present seen on a Spanish mortgage is 0.17 percent above the Euribor and many of those signed up in the pre-recession years – between 2005 and 2007 – have rates below 0.4 percent, meaning the Eurozone rate would have to plummet even further before homeowners would, in theory, actually be paid by the bank for having a mortgage. But this scenario is unlikely, as it is probable that the banks would simply stop charging interest in these cases instead. For those contracted during or after the recession, the 'Euribor + X%' figure has generally been higher to prevent this from occurring. Even if the Eurozone interest rate does rise, increases have always been very gradual, and the late 2007 historic high of 5.6% was an exception that does not look likely to be seen again.

Flog it! comes to Visitors ruin Costa Blanca protected

cove

Raid your jewellery boxes and plunder the garage because Flog It! is coming to the Costa Blanca! Mark Stacey, renowned British auctioneer, will be in Javea on September 14 (Saturday) to value your trinkets and even give you a juicy offer. The TV personality has appeared on Bargain Hunt, Flog it!, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and the Antiques Road Trip – but this trip will be raising funds for charity Guardian Angels. “Six years ago Mark came over and we had over 400 people through the door,” Sue Nutbrown, president of Guardian Angels, told the Olive Press. “If your items are worth something, Mark will make you an offer and then livestream you its auctioning back in the UK.” The charity afternoon will take place at the Palacio de la Paz, 20 Calle de la Salvia, and floggers will be charged €5 for a valuation.

Visitor restrictions to an ecologically-sensitive cave on the Costa Blanca have not stopped un-authorised tourists from entering and even defecating in its interior. The Cova Tallada, between Javea and Denia in the marine reserve of cabo de Sant Antoni, was the first beach in the Valencian Community to restrict access due to tourism pressure. But local reports suggest rule-breakers are sneaking past guards by arriving before 9am – when security officials start work – and then staying throughout the day. Visitors are supposed to pre-register 10 days before their trip to make trip sure numbers do not exceed 482 in any one day. However, not only have studies detailed the ecological fragility of the cave towards human pressure above this number, but the unauthorised entrants have been spotted leaving rubbish in the cave. In one picture a water collection tank, designed to gather filtered H20 filtering from the ceiling, was even soiled with human faeces.

Ryanair cancels 14 Spanish flights on first two days of September strikes

A series of planned strikes in the Spanish transportation system has prompted hundreds of cancellations by airlines Vueling and Ryanair, as well as the Renfe train network. The country’s Public Works Ministry has established minimum services aimed at alleviating the disruption, which will coincide with the return of many travellers from their August vacation. Despite its cabin crew planning 10 days of strikes for September, with pilots also staging stoppages on five of the same days, Ryanair only cancelled 14 flights of the 1,900 scheduled to and from Spain for the first two days of the industrial action. It has pulled six flights on st September and eight on 2nd September. The airline explained that this low number – just 0.7 percent of the total flights for the two days – is possible “thanks to the great work of the majority of our Spanish pilots and cabin crew who have already confirmed that they will continue to operate according to their planned timetables, or are offering to work on their days off, with the aim of not altering the travel plans of our customers and their families in September.”

The Irish carrier added that all those passengers affected by the cancellations have been sent notifications via email or text message of the options available to them, which include a free flight change or a complete refund. Passengers who have not received these notifications will be able to fly. Ryanair has called on the USO and Sitcpla unions, which represent cabin crew, and the SEPLA union, which represents pilots, to call off the planned stoppages, which have been called over the airline’s plans to close a number of its bases across Spain and Portugal. Spain’s Public Works Ministry has already set minimum service levels for the first cabin crew strike days, protecting all of the flights to the Canary and Balearic Islands, 60 percent of the flights within the peninsula and to international destinations where the flight time is five hours or above, and 35% of flights within the peninsula with a flight time below five hours

Iberia and Vueling Following the last failed meeting between Iberia management and union leaders, ground staff will walk off the job on August 30 and 31 at Madrid-Barajas

and Barcelona-El Prat. The company has cancelled 102 flights – six departing from Barcelona and the rest from Madrid. For its part, Vueling has canceled 92 flights this weekend at the Barcelona-El Prat airport, due to the strike called by Iberia ground staff. Both airlines are part of the IAG group, which also owns British Airways. A total of 54 flights have been cancelled on Friday and 38 on Saturday, The cancellations have affected around 14,000 Vueling passengers, who have been offered an alternative flight or a refund.

Renfe State-owned railway operator Renfe will cancel 360 train journeys this weekend, given the partial strikes that have been called by the CGT labor union for this Friday and Sunday. These stoppages are the last in a series by Renfe this summer, and involve two four-hour strikes a day. The Public Works Ministry has set minimum service that guarantee 78% of AVE high-speed trains and 65 percent of regional trains. Of the cancellations, 118 are AVE services and 242 regional journeys.

Work to reopen Torrevieja Theatre It has been two and a half months since the new local government led by Eduardo Dolón ( PP) assumed the management of the City Council and the Municipal Theatre is still closed. The electoral campaign of the PP was based, in part, on the immediate reopening of the cultural site. However, it seems things maybe about to change as the government board has recently approved the start of two contracts related to maintenance and reforms to adapt the space needed for the reopening. The council secretary of the board, Federico Alarcón announced the approval of the start of the contract and appointment of an instructor to review of the operation of the theatre's systems. This review involves the scenic bars, acoustic shell, fire curtain, control panel and control of the engines. The contract to replace the air conditioning system has also been progressed. There is still huge speculation as to whether the theatre will be granted an opening licence even when the work is completed. The Theatre ran between 2006 and 2015 and closed after several

complaints by Los Verdes to the Generalitat for lack of an open license. Many feel this is unnecessary, and should be signed by the architect Project director, Antonio Marquerie, hired by Acciona. The Mayor of Torrevieja still has not revealed what the legal formula to reopen is – can the sign off actually go through the technician although the Administrative Certification Body (OCA) hired by the PP in 2014 clearly stated the opening license process is not valid without the end of the work certificate. The theatre is also at the centre of a legal case between the city and the architect. With the municipality wanting compensation for the lack of safety measures. Municipal legal services recommended in midAugust that the municipality should not to take legal action against the architect. They have suggested that it be claimed within the lawsuit that the architect has filed against the City Council for the nonpayment of fees - which are the responsibility of Acciona, not the municipality - that contributes that end of work.

Worried about our friend A friend of ours has formed a friendship on Facebook with a younger man from the middle east. Although they have met up many times, with her making the trip to see him in his home country, an engagement was very quick to come about, and her friends are concerned. Our friend owns her own home and is now selling up to marry this man. Ideally he wanted to move to the UK but passport problems made that difficult albeit impossible. Her outspoken friends have warned her that it could be a con, whilst I have advised caution but have also not wanted to be a naysayer, because our friend complains that everyone is warning her off. Above all else we don’t want her to fall foul of a bad situation. What do we do? Any advice? There’s been such a lot in the press recently about women being deliberately defrauded out of their savings, we can’t help but feel we need to warn people we care about of the dangers. I guess you’ve all said your piece without coming across as wanting to spoil someone’s happiness. I knew of a woman who went through something similar – she married the man, and the very day her husband was able to walk away freely with his UK passport and her money, he left his wedding ring on the kitchen table and disappeared for good. She wished she’d listened to her friends. Possibly the only thing would be to suggest your friend withhold any transfer of monies, saying her nest egg is for her children, and see what transpires. As difficult as it is to keep quiet, you may have to let this lady make her own mistakes and just tell her you will always be there for her, come what may. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. Tomatina attracts global visitors Once again and for the 74th time, the streets of Buñol are gushing with ketchup – the world-famous Tomatina festival took place last week and gave a new definition to the term 'painting the town red'. Each year Buñol, which lies about 20 kilometres west of Valencia, becomes the scene of an inter-continental battle on the last Wednesday in August, where locals and visitors from as far away as Japan, South Korea and Australia actually pay for the privilege of spending an hour being pelted with the over-ripe fruit. The planet's biggest tomato fight and one of Spain's largest August fiestas kicked off as usual at 10.50 when a firework was let off as the starting signal – before which nobody is allowed near the fruit – and then six lorries full to bursting with ripe tomatoes poured their loads into the main square. This year, 145 tonnes of tomatoes were hurled among the 22,000 – of whom 9,000 were Buñol residents, a town with just over 10,000 inhabitants – most of whom were wearing their oldest T-shirts, since after the Tomatina,

they will never be able to put them on again. The majority wore goggles to protect their eyes from flying fruit, and many even wore helmets made from hollowed-out halves of watermelons. At noon, a siren sounds to tell everyone to stop throwing, and the festival continues for the rest the day and the next with al fresco lunches and dinners, live music and other outdoor entertainment. This year's poster for the Tomatina borrowed a slogan from cult historical drama series Game of Thrones – 'Winter is Coming' –

an invitation for everyone to let their hair down as the summer draws to a close. Buñol council says it is delighted with the number of people who joined in this year – although foreign tourists are always numerous, an additional 4,000 local people bought tickets. A far greater number of Russians was reported, and plenty of Australians, but the town hall said it was a 'shame' that the number of Brits who visited had dropped – possibly because of the fall in the pound sterling as a result of the imminent Brexit deadline.

Over-40s urged to get measles jab Spanish Epidemic Society professionals have called for anyone born before the year 1970 to get a vaccination against measles unless they know they have had both doses as a child, or have had the illness. Its chairman, Pere Godoy, says the Society is preparing a national campaign aimed at anyone aged 50 or over. Spain's ministry of health, however, has asked for this to be extended to

anyone aged between 40 and 50 who has not had measles, not been vaccinated at all or not had both doses. Some confusion has since arisen, as the health ministry has now backtracked and said it should have announced that anyone born after, rather than before, 1970 – meaning anyone under 50 – should be immunised. In light of this, the safest option is for

anyone of any age who cannot be sure whether they have been innoculated to go to their nearest health centre and book in a jab. Although measles has been eradicated in Spain, cases reported elsewhere in Europe mean national health authorities want to ensure that if the virus does enter the country, everyone is immunised.

GBP / EUR UPDATE It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride for sterling. Driven primarily by Brexit highs and lows, right now it’s all about deal or no deal. The PM proposed suspension of Parliament for several weeks ahead of the Queen's speech on 14th October. A cross party group of politicians had called for Scotland’s Court of Session to rule whether the prorogation is legitimate, with Lord Doherty just this morning refusing the order to halt the suspension. His final ruling will come next week after legal arguments have been heard from both sides. There are doubts that opposition leaders can also put party political differences aside to legislate against a no deal when Parliament reconvenes. Investors are none the wiser from the start of the week to now, with the pound slightly ahead of majors, but only by a whisker. It lost half a US cent and added a sixth of a euro cent this week. The Jackson Hole Symposium, named after the location in Wyoming where the meeting is hosted, was attended this past weekend by the executive board members of the European Central Bank (ECB) and the central bank heads of several countries. Outgoing Bank of England Governor Mark Carney spoke at the event, posing the idea of a private/state-run digital currency that could replace the USD as the global reserve currency. While deemed radical to some, this line of thinking is in keeping with Carney’s recent dialogue and is by his own admission still years away from delivery. Meanwhile in Biarritz, the 45th G7 Summit took place and saw Prime Minister Boris Johnson meet many world leaders for the first time as PM, including US President

Trump. Johnson spoke briefly on Brexit at the event, expressing his satisfaction that the other European leaders appear willing to hear an alternative solution to the Irish backstop. This potential bypass of a ‘no deal’ Brexit was good news for the pound, continuing last week’s short term recovery. Both Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron apparently gave him 30 days to propose a workable alternative to the Irish Backstop. With meaningful UK economic data pretty non-existent, it’s all eyes on Brexit and Boris for now. Central to Europe’s news this week was the breakdown in Italy of Luigi Di Maio’s Five Star Movement and Matteo Salvini’s Lega, following the resignation of PM Giuseppe Conte. This had threatened to provoke a general election, but that problem seems to have been avoided. An interesting coalition has been created between Five Star and centre-left Democratic Party. Investors responded with approval to this hopefully coherent approach to fiscal policy and potentially less friction with the EU. While Italy’s political sphere brightened up Europe, Germany’s data releases did not. A country once known as Europe's industrial locomotive and latterly as its anchor, German business confidence has plunged amid recession fears according to the IFO survey. Companies are increasingly pessimistic and the sentiment index fell for an 11th time in 12 months. Germany's revision to second quarter GDP also did not move the dial away from a 0.1% contraction and French consumer confidence was unchanged at 102.

Live in Spain more than four weeks a year?

- Here's why it's worth pre-planning your funeral as an expat - When the time comes, will your loved ones know how to arrange a funeral in Spain? Traditional Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24-48 hours after someone dies, and delays could cost loved ones hundreds of Euros in mortuary expenses. In addition, it’s common practice for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. That means your next of kin might have to pay hundreds or thousands of Euros before the funeral can take place. This can make it much harder to shop around. Language barriers, unfamiliar funeral systems and different customs mean that your loved ones might find it difficult to compare funeral services and make a choice. Whether you live in Spain all year round, or have a summer home here, a prepaid funeral plan from Avalon lets you pay

for your funeral in advance. And if you split your time between the UK and Spain, an Avalon plan is valid in both countries, so you can have a funeral in Spain or back in the UK. Avalon are the fastest growing provider of funeral plans in Europe, helping more than 70,000 customers across Europe and the UK for over 25 years. They work with a network of local and independent Funeral Directors to help your loved ones cope with the unfamiliar Spanish funeral system, and give you the send-off you want.

“This year the issue has relaxed substantially,” a leading travel agency said,

The false legal actions skyrocketed by 500 percent in the summer of 2016, when they were estimated to have cost the Spanish hotel industry over €50 million.

In 2018, four members of a family from Liverpool were each condemned to an €800 fine and three months in prison for filing a false claim against Jet2Holidays. A second successful case saw a ?15,000 fine imposed upon two British tourists for making a fake food poisoning claim

In both cases, the Brits claimed suffering nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting for days, and even falsified medical reports. But the publication of photos on social media in the latter case, showing the perpetrators enjoying themselves, led to the retaliatory sentence.

Spanish hotel association Hosbec initially flagged up the claims to the British government after tourists began claiming up to €50,000 for food poisoning. The legal crackdown, however, has come after a change in laws regulating the claims.

The Department of Youth is hosting a which will feature a DJ and band. The concert will be held in the Plaza de Togores de Orihuela from 10pm and will feature Elefantes, an iconic Spanish pop rock that has dominated the music scene for more than 20 years and DJ Solar. The band is playing in Orihuela as part of its promotion of its new release ‘The First Light of the Day’. Admission is free and the site will have a bar service and raise money for the benefit of the ADIS Vega Baja association. The Councillor for Culture and Youth, Mar Ezcurra explained that the concert is part of the broad program of activities organised by these departments across the summer. "Taking advantage of the festival of the Virgin of Monserrate we have scheduled this concert to say goodbye in the best way the summer," she said. After the performance by Elefantes local DJ Solar will take to the stage to put the finishing touch to this great musical night. DJ Solar will perform in his home city after a summer triumphing in the music festivals.

Plant these flowers for good luck In addition to beautifying your space, adding instant curb appeal to your yard, and enhancing your health, did you also know that some flowers are said to bring you good luck? "Some flowering plants can be considered lucky for many reasons, from mentions in myths to medicinal uses or just sheer beauty.

Marigolds Often associated with Mother Mary, some religions consider marigolds as protection from evil spirits. And for others, they represent the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and are symbolic for good fortune. Marigolds need full sun, as well as well-drained soil, and they'll bloom from spring until the first fall frost.

Chrysanthemum In Chinese culture the chrysanthemum is offered to elders as a symbol of longevity and good luck. Gold chrysanthemums may be especially lucky, as they are said to represent wealth and prosperity. For optimal growth, plant chrysanthemums in welldraining soil, in a spot that receives full sun. Then, keep the soil around

chrysanthemums moist, watering whenever the top one-inch of soil is dry.

root system.

Peonies These huge blooms represent love, fertility, luck, and success. The Itoh peony is especially sought after for its yellow blooms that are uniquely flushed with lavender and pink. In time, the yellow and pink fade to pale white [leaving] a large dark burgundy flare in the centre. To grow peonies, plant them in enriched, slightly acidic, well-drained soil, with their crowns just below soil level. Make sure to water them regularly.

Victorians associated amaryllis with strength because of their height and sturdy stems This plant "also stands for success, and are sometimes given as gifts for achievements. While amaryllis is often spotted at Christmas, this redand sometimes pink or white-bloom starts hitting stores in the form of bulbs in mid fall. To plant amaryllis, pot it in a six- to eight-inch container filled with a high-quality mix. Then, place the container in a spot with bright-butindirect light, and water it sparingly.

Sunset Pink Azalea

Mystery Gardenia

Azaleas are associated with abundance, especially pertaining to beauty or intelligence. But the sunset pink azalea is an especially hardy variety, making this flowering plant a different kind of lucky for gardeners who may have a back thumb. This type of azalea thrives in humus-rich, acidic, well-drained soils. It should be "sheltered it from harsh sun exposure in hot summer areas" and watered both deeply and regularly in first few growing seasons to establish

Like azaleas, all gardenias represent good luck, but you'll need no luck at all when growing this gardenia. This superior grafted selection outperforms others, and its large white flowers and glossy evergreen foliage enhance any landscape or container. Plant it near an entry or outdoor seating to best enjoy the sweet fragrance. (Just make sure it's in rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil.)

Marigolds

Azalea

Amaryllis

Cecile Brunner Climbing Rose This rose is a favourite for cutting, especially for miniature bouquets, which may have led to the flower's association with finding luck in love. Its small, pointed buds open to fragrant, light pink, double blooms in large sprays," she describes. As a climber, it's perfect for a garden trellis or arbour and should be planted in full sun and layered with compost. Water it weekly, or more often in the extreme Spanish heat.

Spaniard causes 130 flight cancellations at Munich airport

Some mistakes may seem innocent yet they can carry a high price. A young man from Spain involuntarily triggered a high security alert at Munich airport after walking through the wrong door on his way to catch a Madrid flight, said federal police in Germany. As a result 130 flights were cancelled, causing numerous delays at one of the country’s busiest airports, which was partially shut down for four hours. The Spaniard could face criminal proceedings over the incident. The man, who is reported to be aged between 20 and 25 years old, was on his way home after spending his vacation in Thailand and has stated that he was “horrified” at the outcome of his mistake during a stopover in Munich. The Spaniard was arrested and interrogated by German security forces soon after the incident, which took place one morning last week. He said that he had gone to the bathroom after stepping

off a flight from Bangkok, and by the time he left the men’s room all the other passengers had gone. Disoriented, he began walking in the wrong direction as he tried to find his connecting flight to Madrid. He eventually pressed a button opening emergency doors to the restricted area reserved for passengers who have gone through a security check, according to the Bavarian public station BR24 and the local newspaper Merkur. This immediately triggered an alert, as it meant that a passenger from outside the border-free Schengen Area had bypassed passport controls. Parts of Terminal 1 and 2 were evacuated, and passengers who had already gone through security checks had to repeat the process. There were around 1,200 departures scheduled at Munich airport on the day, representing a flow of around 120,000 passengers.

Muscat

Muscat is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Oman. It is also the seat of government and largest city in the Governorate of Muscat. Muscat is also considered as a Global City. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the total population of Muscat Governorate reached 1.56 million as of September 2015. The metropolitan area spans approximately 3,500 km2 (1,400 sq mi) and includes six provinces called wilayats. Known since the early 1st century CE as an important trading port between the west and the east, Muscat was ruled by various indigenous tribes as well as foreign powers such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire at various points in its history. A regional military power in the 18th century, Muscat's influence extended as far as East Africa and

Zanzibar. As an important port-town in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat attracted foreign tradesmen and settlers such as the Persians and the Balochis. Since the ascension of Qaboos bin Said as Sultan of Oman in 1970, Muscat has experienced rapid infrastructural development that has led to the growth of a vibrant economy and a multi-ethnic society.

development of Muscat, which provided new opportunities for trade and tourism in the 1980s – 1990s, attracting migrants from around the region. On June 6, 2007, Cyclone Gonu hit Muscat causing extensive damage to property, infrastructure and commercial activity. Muscat might hold the 2016 Arab League Summit. Early photographs of the city and harbor, taken in the early 20th century by German explorer and photographer, Hermann Burchardt, are now held at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin.

Geography The Tropic of Cancer passes south of the area. It is bordered to its west by the plains of the Al Batinah Region and to its east by Ash Sharqiyah Region. The interior plains of the Ad Dakhiliyah Region border Muscat to the south, while the Gulf of Oman forms the northern and western periphery of the city. The water along to coast of Muscat runs deep, forming two natural harbours, in Muttrah and Muscat. The Western Al Hajar Mountains run through the northern coastline of the city. Volcanic rocks are apparent in the Muscat area, and are composed of serpentine and diorite, extending along the Gulf of Oman coast for ten or twelve 16 kilometres from the district of Darsait to Yiti. Plutonic rocks constitute the hills and mountains of Muscat and span approximately 30 miles (48 km) from Darsait to Ras Jissah. These igneous rocks consists of serpentine, greenstone and basalt, typical of rocks in southeastern regions of the Arabian Peninsula.

History Evidence of communal activity in the area around Muscat dates back to the 6th millennium BCE in Ras al-Hamra, where burial sites of fishermen have been found. The graves appear to be well formed and indicate the existence of burial rituals. South of Muscat, remnants of Harappan pottery indicate some level of contact with the Indus Valley Civilisation. Muscat's notability as a port was acknowledged as early as the 1st century CE by the Greek geographer Ptolemy, who referred to it as Cryptus Portus (the Hidden Port), and by Pliny the Elder, who called it Amithoscuta. The port fell to a Sassanid invasion in the 3rd century CE, under the rule of Shapur I, while conversion to Islam occurred during the 7th century. Muscat's importance as a trading port continued to grow in the centuries that followed, under the influence of the Azd dynasty, a local tribe. With the assistance of the British, Qaboos bin Said put an end to the Dhofar uprising and consolidated disparate tribal territories. He renamed the country the Sultanate of Oman (called Muscat and Oman hitherto), in an attempt to end to the interior's isolation from Muscat. Qaboos enlisted the services of capable Omanis to fill positions in his new government, drawing from such corporations as Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). New ministries for social services such as health and education were established. The construction of Mina Qaboos, a new port conceived initially by Sa`id bin Taimur, was developed during the early days of Qaboos' rule. Similarly, a new international airport was developed in Muscat's Seeb district. A complex of offices, warehouses, shops and homes transformed the old village of Ruwi in Muttrah into a commercial district. The first five-year development plan in 1976 emphasised infrastructural

Climate Muscat features a hot, arid climate with long and very hot summers and warm "winters". In general precipitation is scarce in Muscat, with several months on average seeing only a trace of rainfall. However, in recent years, heavy precipitation events from tropical systems originating in the Arabian Sea have affected the city.

Economy Muscat's economy, like that of Oman, is dominated by trade. The more traditional exports of the city included dates, mother of pearl, and fish. Many of the souks of Muttrah sell these items and traditional Omani artefacts. Petroleum Development Oman has been central to Muscat's economy since at least 1962 and is the country's second largest employer, after the government. The Muscat Securities Market is the principal stock exchange of Oman. It is located in Central Business District of Muscat and it was established in 1988, and has since distinguished itself as a pioneer among its regional peers in terms of transparency and disclosure regulations and requirements. Mina'a Sultan Qaboos, Muscat's main trading port, is a trading hub between the Persian Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East with an annual volume of about 1.6 million tons.

British tourist may be first listeriosis case outside Spain The Health Ministry has confirmed the first possible case of listeriosis outside of Spain as part of the current outbreak, which has so far affected 200 people throughout the country. The potential victim is a Briton who may have become infected with the bacteria while in the focal point of the ongoing outbreak, Andalusia, before travelling to France, where he was diagnosed with listeriosis and spent several days in hospital, then returning to his home country. It has been reported that the oven cart used at the Seville-based company at the centre of the outbreak, a firm called Magrudis, has tested positive for the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Tests carried out on larding needles used by Magrudis to make a pork loin product called carne mechada also returned positive results for the presence of the bacteria. It was this product, thought to be at the centre of the outbreak, that the British tourist consumed while in Spain. The oven cart is a key element in the food plant, and is used at various stages of the production chain, both before and after the products are cooked. The samples that tested positive for the bacteria were taken after the roasting process. Carne mechada is made by cooking pork loin in its own fat. The lard is introduced into the meat using larding needles before it is cooked. It is then usually served cold and in thin slices. Magrudis sells carne mechada, along with other similar products – such as lomo, preserved pork loin, and chicharrones, pork belly – under the brand name La Mechá. Seville City Hall

confirmed on Friday that two other La Mechá products were found to be contaminated: pork loin with sherry, and pork loin with paprika. Samples taken on 21st August from four other products – Andalusian chicharrón, mantecá colorá(orange-colored pig fat cooked with pork and spices), zurrapa de lomo (fried pork loin in butter and salt) and zurrapa de hígado (pork liver spread) – have tested negative for listeria, More than 10 days after the alarm was first raised by the health authorities about the outbreak, Magrudis released its first press release, claiming it was “in a state of shock” and “couldn’t explain what had happened.” According to the food company, they complied with all sanitary obligations and have a lab report from days before the product was packaged that showed it tested negative for the bacteria. The press release came a day after the first tests on carne mechada produced by Magrudis and sold on to a firm called Comercial Martínez León for resale also revealed the presence of listeria.

What is listeriosis? Listeriosis is a bacterial infection that can cause severe illnesses such as sepsis, meningitis and encephalitis, and can even be fatal. Those most at risk are pregnant women, the elderly, unborn babies and newborns, or people whose immune systems are compromised. The infection can also cause gastroenteritis and fever. It is primarily transmitted, as in this current outbreak in Spain, by the ingestion of contaminated foods.

THREE THINGS TO DO FIRST IN YOUR NEW HOME

Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

You’ve been given the keys to your new home, and now you’re eager to move in! Even though you’ll want to unpack everything immediately, there are 3 important things to do before actually unpacking.

3. SET LARGER FURNITURE IN PLACE FIRST

– By doing this, it will be easier to place your smaller items straight into their respective cupboards. When moving home with young children, it is always advisable to have their favourite toys to hand. The same goes for your “fur babies.” Have their beds, water and food easily accessible. If your babies are busy, it will give you more time to concentrate on your own jobs, and finish faster!

1. CLEAN

– It’s much easier to give the home a thorough clean when your belongings are still in boxes. Clean the kitchen first, then the bathroom, as these are the rooms you’ll be using before anywhere else, then work your way to the lounge/dining room, then the bedrooms. Lastly, clean the windows and mop the floors. If you have young children, it’s advisable to clean their room first, as they’ll need to feel clean, safe and secure in their new home, to help them settle quicker.

Buying? Enjoy the journey! If you’re on the hunt to buy a home, go to www.QuesadaDeals.com for a list of the best area deals!

2. ORGANIZE YOUR BELONGINGS

– As long as you’ve labelled your boxes, this should be easy to set the boxes down, in the correct rooms. As you unpack, tick the items off your checklist. Make a note and take a photo, if any of your items are damaged. It will be easier to make a claim through your removal company, if you have proof.

Rosalía, first Spanish woman to win MTV Award

Pop newcomer Rosalía has become the first Spanish female in history to win an MTV Music Award after taking the top prize for Best Latin Videoclip. The artist from San Esteban de Sasroviras, Barcelona province, who will turn 26 in a month's time, has enjoyed a meteoric rise to international fame in the past year or two, when her appearances in international arts festivals and her flamenco compilation album gave way to a firm presence at the top of the mainstream music charts, wide acclaim across Europe and the USA, and even a bespoke clothing range at high-street urban-wear store Pull&Bear. In fact, Rosalía's second album, El Mal Querer - the November 2018 release that launched her into the music stratosphere – was her final-year degree project, part of the syllabus for her qualification in Flamenco Studies at the Catalunya High School of Music. Six months earlier, however, she had already soared to number one in the Spanish music charts, Los 40 Principales, with the first release from

the album, Malamente, which netted five Latin Grammy nominations. Her unique flamenco-hip hop fusion style has shown no signs of falling out of favour, and her single Con Altura – released this March and featuring J. Balvín and El Guincho, was what won her Best Latin Videoclip at the weekend's MTV Awards. Rosalía was up against big names on the Latin hip-hop and Reggaeton scene, including Bad Bunny, Karol G and Maluma. During the ceremony, Rosalía performed three of her singles – A Ningún Hombre, Aute Cuture and her latest release, Yo x Ti, Tú x Mi, featuring Ozuna. Best Videoclip overall went to US artist Taylor Swift for You Need To Calm Down, which she performed along with Lover – and she also took the Video for Good Prize in recognition of clips made with a humanitarian or charitable message. Italian-American singer Ariana Grande – who admitted recently she is still dealing with the psychological hangover of the Manchester Arena bombing during her concert – won Artist of the Year and Song of Summer Awards with Boyfriend, featuring Social House. Best New Artist went to Irish-American Billie Eilish who, at 17, is the secondyoungest ever to win an MTV Award, after Canadian Justin Bieber. Best Song of the Year went to Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus for Old Town Road (Remix), whilst Best Hip-Hop Videoclip went to Cardi B for Money, and best duet prize to Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello for Señorita.

Medical error leaves 17 babies with ‘Werewolf Syndrome’ An internal error at the pharmaceutical company Farma-Química Sur is the cause of a hypertrichosis outbreak that has so far affected 17 babies in Spain, sources from the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) have reported. The company accidentally sold a strong vasodilator, which is most commonly used to treat alopecia, or hair loss, as omeprazole, a drug used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. Hypertrichosis is also known as “werewolf syndrome” because it is characterized by an abnormal amount of hair growth over the body. The AEMPS, which works under the Health Ministry, was notified of a new case last week, which was diagnosed in the province of Granada in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. In total, 10 babies have been affected in Cantabria, four in Andalusia and three in Valencia. “My son’s forehead, cheeks, arms and legs, hands became covered in hair … He had the eyebrows of an adult. It was very scary because we didn’t know what was happening to him,” said Ángela Selles, a mother from Granada, whose son Uriel was six months old when his body started to change. When doctors notified the Spanish System of Pharmacovigilance of Medicine for Human Use (SEFV-H) of the first cases of hypertrichosis in babies, AEMPS opened an investigation. The agency focused on syrups for acid reflux, which are prepared as compound pharmaceuticals – individualised

medications or treatments prepared by a pharmacist for a specific person – that some pharmacies had sold to the parents. This led AEMPS to a factory called Farma-Química Sur in Málaga, in the south of Spain, where they then sent inspectors.

factory was closed last week for failing to meet “control standards on drug production,” according to AEMPS sources. The case against Farm-Química Sur “remains open,” and the company has six months to present AEMPS with a plan to rectify the problems identified by the agency in its “deficiency report.” This deadline can be pushed back or brought forward, if the company decides to present its plan earlier. If the AEMPS inspectors are convinced by the plan, Farma-Química Sur can resume operations. If they are not, the company will have its authorisation to produce pharmaceutical products revoked.

Indignant

“The original shipment of bulk omeprazole from India was analysed and the results showed that it was in perfect condition. The problem was when it was divided into small batches that were later also sold in bulk. There was a serious confusion in the process. It’s not that omeprazole was mixed with minoxidil [a medication to treat male-pattern hair loss], but rather that the package leaflet said one thing and the pharmacy another,” sources said. The agency issued its first warning on 11th July, which was directed at just one of the batches of omeprazole that FarmaQuímica Sur had put on the market. The

The families affected by the outbreak said they are indignant about what has happened to them. “My son had drunk two and half bottles [of the syrup], before the doctor warned me,” said Selles. “They have done several tests and for now the liver is the only thing that is not great, but they have told us that it is not serious and that it will regenerate,” she added. “My son drank two vials of medicine, all the tests have come back fine, although we still have to go to the cardiologist in September,” said the second mother from Granada. The public prosecutor of Cantabria also opened a case against FarmaQuímica Sur in August after four families launched criminal proceedings against the company.

Fenix Dental Since April, there is a new dental practice in Torrevieja, in El Chaparral, La Siesta .You can access quite easily from the cv905 and the building has its own parking. When you enter, you can already feel a relaxing and friendly atmosphere with a nice welcoming waiting‐room with refreshments and an enchanting view to an inner garden. Waiting to greet me were Dr. Janire Uriarte and her dental team Jade and Mandy. Question: I see you have a lot of modern machines here. Can you explain me a bit about them? Dr. Uriarte : Yes. Here, we have the 3D printer and also the miller. They help us to create crowns, veneers and onlays in the same day. We also have the Dental Laser that makes our procedures more effective and less painful. Q: Veneers in a day... Sounds almost science fiction... Dr. U: True, but medicine ,and dentistry in particular, is evolving at high speed, so we wanted to invest in this technology (Planmeca’s Emerald scan and the PlanMill miller). I also have been assisting to the best courses about it and , actually, in October I have the pleasure to be the speaker in a very important course about this aspect of digital dentistry. Q: That sounds great. And with all this technology I imagine you also have digital x rays, right? Dr. U: Of course, and also the CT SCAN( 3D xray machine) so we can plan the implant treatments at perfection and also have better diagnose and treatments in all the

areas of dentistry. Q: So you also do implants here? Dr. U:Yes, we count with one of the best surgeons in Spain. Ignacio Esteban does the implants as well as bone‐grafts or any other oral surgery required. Q: What other services do you offer? Dr. U: Well, we do offer aesthetic & general dentistry. Also microfillers so we can complete the dental treatment with rejuvenated perioral area in order to get the real perfect smile. We also offer orthodontic treatments, our specialist is Carlos Marhuenda, who is a great professional at the peak of his career, using the latest techniques. Q: I can see you put a lot of thought and heart into this project. What would you say you main goal was? Dr. U: I am aware that coming to the dentist isn't the best plan for the day and it can be very hard, especially for people who have suffered a lot in the past and that may have dental traumas. So my main objective was to create a place with calming environment where people could feel more relaxed and at ease, making the dental experience as pleasant as it could be. Dental health is very important to keep our good general health, self‐esteem and general well‐being, so we offer the highest standards and quality on products and service to our patients. Sheeran to take 18month break Ed Sheeran has announced that he will take an “18 month” break from performing live after concluding his two-year Divide world tour, according to new reports. Speaking at his fourth and final homecoming show at Chantry Park in Ipswich recently, Sheeran, 28, told the audience that he was feeling “emotional” about the upcoming hiatus. “As you may or may not know, I’ve been on the Divide tour for over two years now and this is the last day of the whole thing,” he is reported to have said. “There is something very bittersweet about it. I love that you guys are here and we are ending it in Ipswich. This is my last gig for probably 18 months.” “I was told before I came on that now at the end of this tour I’ve played to nine million people around the world. It is the biggest tour ever. “It’s been an emotional day for a lot of people backstage. It kind of feels like, in a weird way, that you’re breaking up with a girlfriend you’ve been with for years. It sounds off but it has been a long tour.” The singer then thanked “everyone on this tour” and “everyone who has given [him] a

chance”, before telling fans: “See you in a few years’ time.” The musician confirmed in July that he had married long-term girlfriend Cherry Seaborn, after lyrics in Remember the Name, a track from his latest album No 6 Collaborations Project, made reference to his “wife". Reports in February suggested that the couple had tied the knot in December in a low-key ceremony at their home in Suffolk, after announcing their engagement in January 2018. Sheeran shot to fame in 2011 when he independently released the extended play, No. 5 Collaborations Project. After signing with Asylum Records, his debut album, + (pronounced "plus"), was released in September 2011. It topped the UK and Australian charts, reached

number five in the US, and has since been certified eight-times platinum in the UK. Since then he has experienced unqualified success. Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling music artists. Two of his albums are in the list of the best-selling albums in UK chart history: x at number 20, and ÷ at number 34. Beginning in March 2017, his ÷ Tour became the highestgrossing of all time in August 2019. An alumnus of the National Youth Theatre in London, as an actor Sheeran has portrayed a recurring role on The Bastard Executioner, and in 2019, he appeared in the Richard Curtis/Danny Boyle film Yesterday.

On a recent episode of Diva Forever, her new ITVBe series, Gemma Collins visited Los Angeles and met up with her friend Jonathan Cheban, after meeting on Celebrity Big Brother in 2016. However, it wasn't long until the former TOWIE star, 38, paid a visit to famous cosmetic dermatologist, Simon Ourian, and demanded that he 'suck the fat out of her face'. At the start of her appointment, the reality star told Dr Ourian, who has treated the likes of the Kardashian and Jenner clan: 'I need this fat sucked out of my face, pronto! I've just lost 2.5 stone but the face don't get any thinner...' With Gemma's pal Jonathan, also known as FoodGod, hitting back with: 'You did not lose 28lbs!' To which the former TOWIE star decided to prove a point as she whipped off her floral dress to reveal a pair of highwaisted nude knickers and a matching bra, as she insisted: 'Look at my body!' However, Jonathan, wasn't convinced and went on to accuse Gemma of 'lying' as he added: 'You're lying now, why are you always lying? You added 20 to that, you did

not lose 28lbs!' Paul Hollywood raked in a whopping £9.1 million last year... over nine times more than all of his Great British Bake Off co-stars. The 53-year-old TV personality, whose tumultuous love life has attracted headlines recently, pulled in £7.3million through his company HJP Media LLP, while Paul Gollywood Limited, another of his entities, earned £1.8million. Paul, whose 19-month marriage to Alexandra was officially dissolved in a divorce last month, pockets £400,000 per year from his TV hosting duties, after signing a three-year deal with Channel 4. He moved to the network in 2016, after controversially quitting the BBC in 2016 amid revelations he was being paid less than £100,000 for his efforts on the same show. According to Companies House documents his pay packet stands him considerably ahead of his co-stars, with comedian Noel Fielding, 46, being the next biggest earner with a haul of £813,000 from his two companies.

Inbetweeners star claims This Morning 'exploits' mental illness Inbetweeners star James Buckley has accused This Morning of exploiting celebrities with mental health issues. Speaking out, the actor revealed he turned down the opportunity to go on the ITV morning show and talk about his struggles with anxiety, because he thinks they have ‘baited’ people with mental health problems to make entertainment. “I was asked to go on This Morning and daytime TV shows and chat shows

to talk about it,” he said. “I’m like, ‘I did talk about it. You didn’t report it properly and it made me even more anxious and depressed’.” He continued: “The reason why I wasn’t comfortable talking about my anxiety on certain shows is that I thought the whole thing was sort of hypocritical. “I think they’ve baited people that have probably had mental health problems and used that to make

entertainment.” Buckley admitted to usually enjoying the morning show, but was put off going on it by Kerry Katona’s ‘gurning’ appearance. “Whatever you’ve got to say about Kerry Katona, for example, she’s obviously got some demons, and they roll that clip out at every opportunity,” he said. “I didn’t even see that live but I’ve seen it repeated on TV numerous times

and that’s not fair. “I don’t want to see anyone taken advantage of like that. How she got to the point where they were like, ‘Yeah you can go on. You’re fine’. It’s really, really unfair and it does not help the problem at all. To be used like that would be horrific and would make you go even more insane.” Speaking on his Complete Load of Podcast, Buckley said he hopes things will change.

“I think things are changing and sometime in the near future there would be someone responsible there going, ‘For your own health we can’t have you on live television right now,” he said. “We want to make you feel better because I’m another human being and I don’t want to see someone else suffer in this way’. Instead of just doing the complete opposite and going, ‘Right, this will be some ratings’.”

MEDITERRANEAN TOMATO & FETA DIP Ingredients • 2 pints (4 cups) cherry tomatoes, quartered (I love a mix of red and yellow) • 1/2 cup pitted Kalamata olives, thinly sliced • 3 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 2 tablespoons oilpacked sun-dried tomatoes, rinsed and chopped • 2 cloves garlic, pressed or minced • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar • 10 twists of freshly ground black pepper • 6 ounces feta cheese, crumbled (don’t buy pre-crumbled; buy a block of feta!) • 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil • Accompaniments: Toasted crostini or pita wedges, crusty bread, pita chips or sturdy crackers…

Instructrions 1. Combine the quartered tomatoes and sliced olives on a large serving platter or in a medium-sized serving bowl. Set aside. 2. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, lemon juice, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, vinegar and pepper. Whisk until blended. Drizzle all of the mixture over the tomatoes and olives, and toss to combine. 3. Sprinkle the crumbled feta and chopped basil over the tomatoes. Gently toss a few times to combine. Serve immediately, with accompaniments of your choice. This dip is best when fresh, since the tomatoes continue to release their juices over time, but leftovers (covered and chilled) are still good for a day or two.

SWEET CORN & BLACK BEAN TACOS

Ingredients Corn and feta salad • 2 ears of corn, shucked (about 2 cups fresh corn kernels) • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro • 3 medium red radishes, thinly sliced into small strips • 1 medium lime, zested and juiced (to yield about 1 teaspoon zest and 2 tablespoons lime juice) • 1 medium jalapeño

pepper, seeded and minced • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt • 1/2 to 2/3 cup crumbled feta, to taste (optional) Black beans • 2 cans black black beans, rinsed and drained (or 3 cups cooked black beans) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 small yellow or white onion, chopped • 1 tablespoon ground cumin • 1/3 cup water • Salt and black pepper, to taste Everything else • 10 small round corn tortillas (gluten free for gluten-free tacos) • 1 large avocado, sliced into thin strips • Optional garnishes: pickled jalapeños, salsa verde and/or hot sauce Instructions 1. To prepare the corn salad:

Use a sharp chef’s knife to slice the kernels off all four sides of the corn cobs. Transfer the kernels to a medium-sized mixing bowl and add the chopped cilantro, radishes, lime zest and juice, jalapeño, olive oil and sea salt. Mix well. Stir in ½ cup crumbled feta, taste, and add a little more if you’d like. Set the bowl aside to marinate while your prepare the beans. 2. To prepare the black beans: Warm the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions and a sprinkle of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions have softened and are turning translucent, about 5 to 8 minutes. Add the cumin and cook for about 30 seconds while stirring. Pour in the beans and 1/3 cup water. Stir, cover and reduce heat to simmer. Cook for 5

minutes, then remove the lid and use the back of a fork to mash up at least half of the beans. Remove from heat, season generously with salt and pepper, to taste, and cover until you’re ready to serve. 3. To warm the tortillas: Heat a cast iron or non-stick skillet over medium heat and warm each tortilla individually, flipping occasionally. Alternatively, you can warm them directly over a low flame on a gas range. Fold a tea towel over the warmed tortillas to keep them warm. 4. Put it all together: Spread black beans down the middle of each tortilla. Top the beans with corn salad. Place a slice of avocado to the side of the beans and serve with optional pickled jalapeños, salsa or hot sauce on the side

UK’s favourite ‘final meal’ revealed It's not a pleasant thought, particularly in the middle of a gorgeous Spanish summer, but what would be your 'final meal'? This is the subject of a new survey by healthcare charity Sue Ryder. In a poll of 2,000 Brits, a roast was revealed to be the top pick for a ‘last meal’ and cheesecake was the preferred dessert. While 13 percent of respondents picked the roast as their last meal, this was followed closely by fish and chips at 11 percent, steak and chips at 10 percent, Chinese at nine percent and a full English breakfast at eight percent. Cheesecake – the dessert preferred by 11 percent of respondents – also had close contenders with nine percent of respondents choosing ice cream and five percent choosing sticky toffee pudding, black forest

gateau and brownies respectively. Newcastle residents proved to be the biggest fans of the roast dinner with 21 percent opting for a roast, which also proved popular in Cardiff (16 percent) and London (13 percent).

In the north, Edinburgh residents voted for fish and chips as their last meal while Glaswegians opted for Chinese and Mancunians preferred a full English breakfast. The survey also revealed that a roast was favourable among women while fish and chips was the pick for male respondents,

also those under 35 were more likely to opt for pizza while those over 55 would rather steak and chips. The poll was conducted by the charity in a bid to get people talking to their loved ones more about death, as 47 percent of respondents said they hadn’t considered speaking to friends and family about what they want when they die. Heidi Travis, Chief Executive at Sue Ryder, said in a statement: “Many of us are willing to discuss what we would have as our last meal on earth, yet we still shy away from planning for our death. “We want to encourage everybody to talk about their plans with those close to them. Knowing what our wishes are and being able to support us in fulfilling them can bring great comfort to family and friends.”

Keep your cava and prosecco out of the fridge There's nothing quite like the taste of a crisp, cold glass of fizz on a warm summer's day. And we all like to keep our sparkling wine in the fridge to keep it ready for that moment, especially when you live here in Spain. But, apparently, a wine expert has said you shouldn't be storing your Cava, Champagne or Prosecco for days on end in the fridge. Why? It can alter the taste. Speaking recently, winemaker Marie-Christine Osselin has said that we really shouldn't be storing our bubbly in the fridge for more than four days before we drink it. She explained: “If you’re planning to enjoy your bottle of Champagne (or sparkling wine) within 3 to 4 days of the purchase, it is fine to store the bottle in the refrigerator. But only keep it in the fridge for a few days, or else the bubbly will begin to change." She added: “If it sits in the fridge for weeks, the cork can dry out due to no humidity. As corks dry out, the seal between the bottle and the cork loosen up and the Champagne will oxidize faster, changing its aromas.” Instead, she suggests, that it's best to store your Champagne, cremant, cava or prosecco in a cool, dry place that's out of direct light and maintains a consistent temperature. Another top tip? Hold the Champagne glass by the stem when you're drinking fizz, otherwise it warms up faster. Now we know... Cheers to that!

Healthier fast food Fast food in modern times feels like a culinary arms race. While that creates some delightfully decadent overloaded burgers adorned with all manner of cheeses, sauces, and bacon, the results aren’t exactly low in calories, or particularly high in nutrients most of the time. Well, a deep-dive analysis published by Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health suggests there is a way to cut back on the massive calories found in your average fast food combo— as long as you strip away almost everything we like about them in the first place. For the study recently published in the Journal of Preventive Medicine, lead author Kelsey A. Vercammen and her team pored over nutritional data from 34 fast food and fast casual restaurants, looking at the “default,”

minimum, and maximum combo options (entrée, side, and drink) to assess their calories, saturated fat, and sugar content. The average calorie count for default combo meals was 1,193, accompanied by 14 grams of saturated fat and 68 grams of sugar. That’s uh, quite a bit more than the Healthier Restaurant Meal Guidelines baseline of 700 calories. If those numbers made you choke on your Baconator, fear not! It turns out that some modifications to your order can rein things in. For starters, Vercammen told Reuters that

swapping out soda for water is the easiest way to cut out calories and most of the sugar. From there, things get a little more painful: you’ll have to “remove toppings and dipping sauces from entrées” and presumably sides. If there’s one flaw with the study (from what this uneducated writer can see), it’s the fact that the lowercalorie options aren’t described in terms of content or sales data. It’s entirely possible that what registers as a “healthy” combo is little more than a beef patty between two buns and dry, unsalted fries. It just goes to show that while you certainly can eat healthier by changing how you approach your fast food order, you might want to just go somewhere else that you can order a salad instead.

Canon launches two new cameras Canon has announced two new enthusiast-grade cameras that are similar in capability but very different in form. Whether you’d get along better with the EOS 90D or the EOS M6 Mark II will entirely depend on your feelings about the never-ending DSLRversus-mirrorless debate. Both cameras have a new 32.5megapixel APS-C image sensor, a DIGIC 8 image processor, an electronic shutter capable of speeds up to 1/16000, uncropped 4K/30 video recording, dual-pixel autofocus in live view with 5,481 selectable points, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. But the 90D looks like every other mid-range Canon DSLR, while the M6 Mark II’s compact form is essentially unchanged from the original M6 from 2017. There are a few differences in performance. The M6 Mark II is capable of

shooting 14 frames per second with AF and AE tracking, for example, while the 90D goes up to 10 fps. That’s an increase from 7 fps on 2016’s 80D, however, and a lot of

sports photographers would prefer the traditional DSLR-style optical viewfinder and 45-cross-type-point AF system over the extra frames. Otherwise, the biggest difference is price. Both cameras will be available next month, but the 90D will cost 1,082e body-

only versus 767e for the M6 Mark II. There are lens kits available for each, and while most 90D buyers will probably have a bunch of Canon lenses already, the M6 Mark II bundles are particularly worth looking at: 992e gets you the 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom lens along with the useful EVF-DC2 electronic viewfinder accessory, while the 1,219e kit swaps out that lens for an 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3. Canon is also announcing two Lclass lenses today for its new EOS R full-frame mirrorless system. The RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM is a fast ultrawide-to-wide zoom, while the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM is a standard zoom with a classic speed and focal length. Both lenses will ship next month for 2,075e, and Canon pledges to complete its pro zoom “trinity” with a 70-200mm f/2.8 by the end of the year.

New notebook from Lenovo Intel a few days ago unveiled the new Comet Lake 10th-gen chips that will power all sorts of notebooks later this year. Siblings of the Ice Lake processors that Intel unveiled earlier this year, Comet Lake chips will bring support for more cores, more RAM of the faster and more efficient variety, as well as faster Wi-Fi 6 support. These chips will power a special set of laptops that Intel certifies under the “Project Athena” program that was announced back at CES 2019. Project Athena machines are supposed to be ultraslim, light devices that feature all-day battery life, always-on internet, and AI support. They also have to deliver increased performance and responsiveness, and that includes the ability to turn on instantly. All this brings us to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop that Lenovo unveiled recently, its first Project Athena laptop. The 7th-gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon is one of the first Athena-ready devices to hit the market. The laptop features

a familiar design, but it incorporates hardware that’s supposed to make it faster and more dependable than previous models. We’re looking at processors going all the way up to Intel’s new 10th-generation 6-core Core processors, complete with Wi-Fi 6 and Thunderbolt 3 support. There’s also support for LTE-A built into the notebook, which means it’ll deliver the always-on internet that Project Athena laptops advertise — a separate 4G SIM card will be needed to enable it, of course. Being an Athena-ready device also means the new X1 Carbon will deliver “optimized battery life.” Lenovo quotes 18.5 hours of life in productivity tests, which should be great news to businesses looking to purchase new ThinkPads this fall. The battery also comes with support for Rapid Charge, Lenovo’s laptop fast-charging battery tech that needs just an hour to reach 80 pecent capacity. Other specs include a choice of 14-

inch touchscreen displays (500 nit 10bit 4K Dolby Vision panel or a 400 nit Full HD display), a Dolby Atmos Speaker System, four far-field microphones, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 2TB of storage, the signature ThinkPad keyboard, ThinkShutter privacy-enhanced IR webcam, fingerprint sensor, and a bunch of ports. The laptop is just 15.5mm thick and weighs 2.99 pounds. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7th-gen will be released in September with prices starting at around 1,340e but it won’t be the only new Lenovo notebook to check out this autumn. The company also unveiled five other new ThinkPad models that aren’t certified under Project Athena, but are still worthy upgrades nonetheless. Three of them will ship with 10th-gen Intel chips inside this fall (ThinkPad X1 Yoga 4, ThinkPad T490, and ThinkPad X390), and there will also be two more affordable ThinkPad models from the L series (L13 and L13 Yoga).

MACs tarot inspired collection Infamous for its surprise limited edition collections, epic celebrity collaborations with everyone from Rihanna to Ru Paul, and endless Disney-themed drops (did someone say Aladdin?), there's nothing more loved than a hit of MAC Cosmetics newness. There's no two ways about it, we’re a sucker for the special packaging and oh-so collectible lipsticks and the brand's latest range is no exception. This time, the cosmetics giant is teaming up with PONY (Park Hye-Min), a celebrity make-up artist from Seoul, South Korea. If you aren't familiar with PONY, she has a casual 6.6 million followers on Instagram and over 5 million on YouTube – and so is definitely worth checking out! Insiders claim that one of the best parts of the product is actually the packaging. The collection features a limited edition version of MAC’s iconic Fix + setting spray with a pearly finish, a pink toned eyeshadow palette, a clear lip plumping gloss, two highlighters, make-up brushes, a set of false lashes and a brand spanking new product called Matte lip Mousse which sounds right up our street...and all with a tarot card-inspired theme.

Some Dangers are not so Obvious During the La Vuelta cycle race in Torrevieja, spectators were witness to two dramatic road traffic incidents. The first involved one of the support cars, a Skoda from the Murias Euskadi team, crashed into the wall of a house as it was negotiating a corner. Inappropriate speed and possibly distraction are the most likely contributing factor to that incident. Although there were luckily no injuries in the crash, thanks partly no doubt to the airbags being deployed in the collision, the two factors mentioned are elements of what are referred to as the Fatal 4, the four factors which occur more often in road traffic incidents. The Fatal 4 are inappropriate speed, distractions (such as using a mobile phone), not wearing a seat belt, and alcohol and drug use. There is no doubt that each one of those factors mentioned are simple to understand, and none of them will be a surprise. However, when we come to the second incident of the race, the most likely contributing factor is one which may not be so obvious, but can serve to explain the reasoning behind an occasionally contentious law. A group of cyclists from the Emirates and el Jumbo Visma teams crashed to the ground as they were negotiating a bend in the town. Five cyclists from the Dutch team crashed, along with seven or eight others, leaving just one cyclist still upright. “A dangerous curve was flooded and turned fatal. Once we were on the floor, we got up immediately and did what we could to the end," explained Fabio Aru, one of the cyclists who crashed in the stage. The investigation revealed that water was on the road and that the most likely source was a nearby plot which had been watered, some of the water then leaking onto the road.

This incident serves to explain the reasoning behind the law which states that, for example, washing your car in the street is not permitted. Aside from environmental laws, when it comes to traffic, the water can make the surface of the road treacherous, as was the case in La Vuelta, and can contribute to a very serious and even fatal incident. You are not allowed to wash your car in the street, nor are you permitted to carry out repairs, as residue from water, oil, or other fluids may leak onto the road and

pose a hazard to other vehicles.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Graeme Souness on Christian Eriksen: "I don't know him at all, I'm assuming he's not been a problem around the place. I’d play him.” Souness on Moise Kean: insinuating that Moise Keane’s got an “attitude problem” like Emmanuel Adebayor and, well, Paul Pogba. Nothing to see here, move along folks. Let's do what Graeme is paid to do and talk about the Premier League football, probably in a slightly less judgemental way considering we've met Moise Kean as many times as he has. It's good to see David Luiz has sorted out all those problems in Arsenal's defence whilst not losing his desire to sprint back into position. And if it's not Luiz with his finger teasing us over the self-destruct button, it's

skipper Granit Xhaka and his welltimed tackles in the area. But, maybe this is a new Arsenal. How many recent Arsenal sides would have fought from 2-0 down and got themselves level? Gary Neville has the answer. With Guendozi driving them forward and being the player that Xhaka wishes he could be, Yo-Pierre levelled the scores And if Spurs fans felt frustrated, they were nowhere near the Jamie Redknapp levels - imagine if Tottenham hadn't put someone on the edge of the area for the next corner kick, eh? Considering how little else there was to come out of Liverpool's routine 3-0 win at Burnley, I feel compelled to blow the whole Sadio Mane tantrum out of proportion. Surely this has to be some kind of lover's tiff between him and Mo Salah? Yes, Mo should have passed but Mo is Mo. He is the selfish one in the relationship. He is the one who decides what is on TV. He says what they have for breakfast. He is the one who gets told he is wonderful all the time. But Sadio knows he brings as much to this relationship as Mo does. He just wants a bit of recognition from his partner. He wants to feel like they are in it together. He wants to feel the love. And he doesn't understand why he is the one who has to go bed early as it wasn't him being bad. Sean Dyche had it bang on after the game. If you are Burnley and you are playing a Liverpool team looking

to break their record of Premier League matches won in a row then you probably don't want to deflect a cross into the top corner and then give the ball away so they can score again. And it looks like Ashley Barnes' hot streak is over, already. Frank Lampard's Chelsea U23 team did very well against the senior side of Sheffield United. Credit to Frank, this is the first time a youth team has played in the Premier League and they are doing rather well. Give them five years to pass their exams, get their driving licenses and have their first legal pint and these boys will be challenging for the title (providing that transfer ban stays in place). Tammy Abraham scored another brace once again proving how good he is against Championship defenders but Chelsea threw away their 2-0 lead in the second half. That's right, Chelsea dropped off in the second period again - maybe they need better milk and biscuits and half time? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is one of life's optimists, that is for sure. Even though United dropped more points at St Mary's, Ole was smiling, telling the world how well United had played and how good his young men were. Bearing in mind United normally beat Southampton, regardless of their form at the time, it was a clear indication that United really are not that good yet despite another cracker from Daniel James. With all the 'disruptive influences' bar one remaining at the club it can only go one of two ways for United from here. Either Solskjaer fixes this and United rise again or it's all Paul Pogba's fault.

Ruby’s Golf Society After the heavy rain earlier in the week it made our trip to Altorreal a bit fresher, in fact it was great weather for golfing. The course was in good condition although a little wet in places but that was to be expected, the day was set for a great outing but the scoring was a little disappointing. The results were as follows, nearest the pin on the par three's was Jim McCarthy, Nigel Wright and Michelle Evans, nearest the pin in 2 was Jim McCarthy and despite

not getting a nearest the pin Mark Foden managed to win the two's pot.Best front nine Barry Taylor and best back was Bill Peters. Silver division winner was Theresa Wright and gold and overall winner was Steve Marsh. Back at O'Briens where we did the presentation the football card was won by Barry Hopkinson. Our next Trophy game is at Alenda and is fully booked but if anyone would like to play with us please email rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

Man City swatted Brighton aside in the manner we all expected. Graham Potter will have worked all week on making Brighton difficult to break down and all that work went out of the proverbial after 70 seconds at the Etihad. Americ Laporte, who Peppy G had cleverly called the best 'left-sided

Tammy Abraham defender in Europe' on Friday (before pretending he meant left-footed) celebrated his long-awaited call-up to the French national side by knackering

his knee in a clumsy challenge for which he got booked. Now, I am no coaching mastermind believe it or not - but if I was taking a team to play Leicester City away from home I probably wouldn't leave a lorryload of space for Jamie Vardy to run into. It was a great finish and Leicester remain unbeaten even if they should have been down to ten men. Equally peeved about VAR are Aston Villa who scored a perfectly good late equaliser that was ruled out because the ref wrongly blew the whistle for something that didn't happen. Yes, a clear and obvious error from the official - something that VAR is there to sort out, right? Er, no. Apparently, because the ref blew his whistle VAR can't get involved so Villa lost what could be a valuable point. Oh, and Palace actually managed to score at home. VAR got it equally wrong in the West Ham match where it chose not to send the Hammers player off for crippling the Norwich player - the same Norwich player then unable to run two minutes later as West Ham strolled past him to open the scoring. Despite that, Norwich look in big trouble already. Given some of the players that Gareth Southgate calls up to his England squad, Wolves' captain Connor Coady could be forgiven for wondering what else he has to do. Probably not gifting Everton their opening goal in the first game after the squad has been announced, Connor - that would help. I had the game at Goodison Park down as a scrappy 1-0 win to Wolves. I was wrong.

Rafa Nadal rescues Minute's silence for trapped and crying child Luis Enrique's daughter Spanish tennis star Rafa Nadal has shown his human side in public once again – during the US Open, he heard a child crying and went to his rescue. The world number two was leaving court after training and found a sizeable group of fans seeking his autograph and photos. Within the crowd, he heard a child crying and, on investigation, saw a little boy trapped among the tightlypacked mass of people. Nadal ran forward, asking everyone to move aside, and scooped up the child, carrying him above his head. The little boy was gasping and sobbing, but Rafa stayed

with him for a few moments, hugging him and stroking his hair and talking to him until he had calmed down. Next, the Mallorca-born player signed the boy's baseball cap and asked the organisers to seek out his parents who had become separated from him. They immediately came forward to collect him. Rafa's gesture was filmed by the US Open management, who uploaded a screen shot of the moment on Twitter (above, on @usopen). This is not the first time Rafael Nadal has dropped everything to help the public – during the

serious flash floods near his native town of Manacor last October, he was photographed bailing out buildings and streets and mopping up, and opened up his eponymous sports academy so beds could be set up for evacuated residents. Nadal, 33, is due to marry his girlfriend of 14 years on 19th October in their birth town of Manacor, in a venue that will be hermetically-sealed against the paparazzi. Meri Perelló, 30, is the only girlfriend Rafa has ever had, and they have been going out with each other since they were teenagers.

All teams in the first and second divisions of La Liga will held a minute's silence at the start of the weekend matches in tribute to recently-retired national team manager Luis Enrique's nineyear-old daughter, who passed away on Thursday. Tributes to the former Barça manager's little girl have poured in from the world of professional football and beyond after it was announced that Xana Martínez had lost her five-month battle against bone cancer. Scheduled press conferences with Under-21 national team manager Luis de la Fuente and national team manager Robert Moreno will be postponed as a sign of mourning. Luis Enrique Martínez was chosen as Spain manager after last year's World Cup when Fernando Hierro resigned after a month, having been drafted in at the eleventh hour when Julén Lopetegui was fired just two days before the opening match with the team already in Russia. But the Asturias-born coach gave a short announcement in late June this year to say he had opted to stand down from the role due to 'family problems' which he described as being 'of force majeur', and which led to his aide Robert Moreno's being given the job. He had already had to leave Malta abruptly when Spain was about to play an away match in the stadium in Ta'Qali after being called home – a situation which

recurred during matches against the Faeroe Islands and Sweden. It was not known why at the time – nor when he resigned – but it is now clear that these 'family problems' were the fact that his daughter Xana was in treatment for osteosarcoma, a type of aggressive bone cancer which mainly affects children and teenagers. Although statistically very rare, it is the sixth-most common type of childhood cancer, accounting for 3% of cases of the disease in the under-18s, and around four children per million are diagnosed with it every year. The average age at diagnosis is 15, although many patients are much younger and it has been seen in sufferers aged over 60. It usually starts in large bones, such as the femur, and spreads rapidly – despite which the majority of children who receive

the correct treatment survive and are completely cured, as is the case with nearly 90% of childhood cancer cases. This said, if an osteosarcoma is very large, it may even involve amputation of the limb. It is normally diagnosed after patients report pain and swelling in the affected area, especially where the pain increases at night or after physical exertion. Treatment is normally through chemotherapy to shrink the tumour enough to operate, then after surgery to 'clean up' any cancerous cells that remain in the body. Xana had been treated by the Sant Joan de Déu and Sant Pau hospitals in Barcelona, whom Luis Enrique thanked for their care and dedication in his tweet confirming his daughter's death. The nine-year-old leaves behind two sisters, Luis Enrique's other daughters Sira and Pacho.

Almoradi scrabble club MATCH FISHING REPORT

There have been no open matches over the last two weeks due to the extremely bad weather conditions with heavy thunderstorms etc; hopefully we will begin the Winter League matches next week on the 3rd September weather permitting. On the 10th July we held a club match on the Embalsa de Argos, there was three Spanish fishermen on the first pegs on the cold side and two English pleasure fishermen on the point, and the match was being fished on the warm side. The Soprona arrived and did not bother with the three Spaniards, but checked the paperwork of the two English guys and gave them a ticket but did not explain what it was for. About four weeks later the Police went to their homes and issued them with a fine for 60 euro, they asked their local bank to translate and were told the fine was for returning Carp to the water. I have been advised that they had not returned any fish to the water on that day. The Soprona on the day proceeded to check our paperwork and licences and all was in order they also checked the authorization pinned on the

tree and waved goodbye to us and left. Yesterday four of our anglers fished the river Segura in Murcia town centre; after they had finished fishing they took their cars down the bank to collect their tackle and on returning to the car park were approached by the Police Local who advised them that cars are not allowed down to the water at all. I have not received any notification of this from the Murcia Federation, but will be in contact with them over the next week or so when their office is re opened after the August holiday to check on this. There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our

website www.abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368

Almoradi Scrabble Club congratulates Costa Blanca People on their 803rd edition of their paper. The Scrabble club has now been operating for just over three years and to celebrate its 40th gathering, Christine presented certificates to members who had reached a milestone score - for one game of Scrabble. Karen received one for 500 points, Mike for 400 and Eileen plus Phyllis 350. Amazing achievements!!

As the players were about to commence on their second game of scrabble, there was a sudden downpour outside. The sky turned black and hail descended rapidly. Lots of "OOhs and AAhs". Thus the word for the challenge round changed to words associated with "rain". Words played, included : "rain"; "gauge" (as in rain gauge); "moan" (this is something people always do when it rains. Don't They?); "gale"

and "drab". Maria chose "gale" which delighted Christine, as she won the bottle of wine. She was further surprised to find that she had the highest score of the afternoon (for one game) of 423, narrowly beating Sam with 413. The next meeting will be on 1st October at Cafe Almoradi, starting at 3p.m. as usual. For further information, please contact Christine on 694437698.
