devastated the Vega Baja The Mayor said: "We are very grateful for the consideration and affection that their Majesties have transferred to the neighbours of Orihuela and the entire Vega Baja with their visit." Don Felipe and Doña Letizia met with representatives of the Basic Intervention Units that participated in the security and emergency device during the DANA episode in the Vega Baja region. Following the meeting the King greeted several Mayors from across the region and visited a photographic exhibition highlighting the damage the storm wreaked across the different municipalities. Animals in need after disaster wipes out food The devastation following the gota fria, the worst storms in more than one hundred years on the Costa Blanca has affected so many in so many ways. Animal Rescue Centres and individuals across the region have been severely affected with the loss of life of many pets and animals. Currently the number of corpses recovered so far is nearly 1,500 and the destruction of premises and infrastructures is unheard of. Although some feel very lucky to have been saved from the floods, it is the future that is now causing concern. For the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, the shortage of forage is now its biggest concern. EHCRC was on high alert throughout the period with the Town Hall keeping them informed on the state of the river and impending disaster as they knew leaving 120 horses, ponies and donkeys was not an option for Rod and Sue Weeding. Miraculously the banks of the river Segura didn’t burst in the vicinity of the Rescue Centre although they did have to face the torrential rain with flooding of the fields and stable yard but as always hail, rain or shine, day or night Rod and Sue were there dealing with whatever was being thrown at them and initially the biggest job was to pump out the water all day and all night. The couple are so grateful to Costa Blanca People readers who kindly donated towards those pumps which they bought following local community donations following the last floods. However, the even greater challenge now is how everyone is going to feed

their equines this winter because quite simply there is going to be a real shortage of forage in Spain. Sue Weeding said: “We have lost about €3,000 worth of our forage in this flood and we have been told that currently 78 percent of alfalfa in Spain is being exported to the Middle East and China. There is no way we and the ordinary person can compete with the price the producers are getting from those countries.” So Sue, in her tenacious way, decided to take on the challenge of sharing their desperate situation and looking for solidarity from far and wide. Firstly, many people kindly donated to the rescue centre’s request for financial assistance and then came the offers of hands on help and then incredible people like Rune from Norway started his quest to find supplies of forage so the horses can be fed. He trekked to Austria and Germany where many wonderful farmers donated hay which is currently on its way to a central collection point in Germany awaiting pick up to be delivered to the door of Easy Horse Care. Incredibly Rune has secured two more loads for next month and the month after. It is estimated that each load will last about two and a half weeks. The next step was to secure transportation for the hay from Germany to Spain however the best price quoted has been €3,300. Thankfully the Deutscher Golfclub Costa Blanca has stepped in and with additional resources from other donators they have collected enough money to cover the first load of

hay, which is to be delivered this week. Continued help Sue Weeding said: “We are so grateful to all our supporters, volunteers, donators and particularly those who have really gone out of their way to help us at this incredibly difficult time. This is going to be a long hard winter for us and so many until the crops are ready for harvest again which won’t be until well into next year.” EHCRC still needs help to survive this particularly bad period and so are desperate for your ongoing support. They expect, because of this feed crisis, that many calls will start coming in from the authorities regarding even more abandoned equines than usual. So please check out their website for all the different ways you can help including donating financially or even your unwanted good quality furniture www.easyhorsecare.net.

Boulevard seeks better business hours The Councillor for Commerce, Víctor Bernabéu, has held a meeting with representatives of Zenia Boulevard and Carrefour recently, to discuss the new request that the Oriolano City Council will make again (the last one was last June) to the Conselleria and the Observatory of Commerce of the Valencian Community. The communication will ask the Ministry to review the agreement to restrict business hours. The Councillor said: "There is a comparative grievance in our city with respect to Murcia whos shops have total freedom of time, while our region and our province force us to close." Councillor Bernabéu went on

to explain that the enforced closure of shops and businesses on Sundays has huge detrimental effect on the local economy. He said that there are certain times of the year when Orihuela attracts a considerable number of visitors and often these are the times when the shops are forced to close. He said: “During Holy Week opening on Sundays and holidays takes place but once the holiday ends we have to close again. In the same way, this happens with the month of June in which we have to close the first two weekends and open the rest, when this is a month of great economic impact in our community thanks to the tourists

that visit us”. The Councillor for Commerce has explained that freedom of time benefits trade for several reasons: providing employment opportunities, increases income (micro and macroeconomic), increases GDP, creates a favourable image and encourages family time. He has already held a meeting with the regional deputy Felipe Carrasco to address this issue that "prevents our trade from competing on equal terms." The deputy Carrasco has shown his support for the City Council's request, to take this situation to the courts in order to revoke the ban on opening for commercial establishments located in the coastal area of the municipality.

Bar and restaurants that are interested need to register on-line by 15th October at www.rutadelatapatorrevieja.es or at the municipal office of Tourism of Paseo Vista Alegre. The registration fee is 50e. Those taking part will be expected to present their tapas dishes on 18th October at the Tourism Center (CdT) of Torrevieja, between 10am and 12noon. As a novelty this year, the establishments can offer two tapas: “La Tapa Km.0 Vega Baja”, which will be made with products from the sea or the fields of the Vega Baja. This tapa will be the one judged by the Professional Jury of the Tourism Centre. For fun there is also a freestyle tapa.

Biggest ever jet ski crossing On Saturday 12th October, the Santa Pola-Torrevieja crossing will be held, in what will be the largest ever concentration of jet skis in the country. This will be the second “great crossing” of jet skis in the province and will see 170 jet skis take part. These will travel from different places across Spain, not only from the province of Alicante, but also from Murcia, Valencia, Madrid, Balearic Islands, Cádiz, Ciudad Real, Almería and Badajoz. The crossing will begin in Santa Pola, docking on the Island of Tabarca and end at Acequión de Torrevieja beach, within the harbour. Antonio Vidal has highlighted the importance of this great concentration of jet skis with arrival in Torrevieja, adding that this sporting event aims to promote good nautical practices, coexistence and companionship in a unique event, as well as the responsible use of boats and respect for Nature and the environment. Finally, it should be noted that organisers have proposed that each of the 170 participants bring a kilogram of food with them such as rice, pasta, legumes, ... to be able to donate it to an NGO or social canteen, hoping to gather At least 170 kilos of non-perishable food.

Jobs for the unemployed The City of Torrevieja, through the Local Development Agency (ADL), has begun the process of hiring unemployed people, over the age of 30, registered with LABORA. These hiring will be carried out thanks to a grant of 143,861.94 euros, for the EMCORP 2019 program granted by the Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Commerce and Labour, and facilitates the of eight people for six months on a full-time basis. These people will be added to the City Council of Torrevieja during the month of November and will work in different departments and areas of the municipality of Torrevieja. There are seven administrative roles for which the candidates must have graduated school and also one job as companies adviser for which the candidate must have a degree in Advertising and Public Relations.

in the XV FOPA Awards

The new Playa Flamenca de Orihuela school, built by the Serrano Aznar / Eiffage Infraestrucuras UTE, and promoted by the Department of Education has won the award for the best public work in the XV edition organised by the Public Works Association, FOPA. The author of the project has been the architect Alfredo Payá. With a constructed area of 9,117m2 plus 14,786 m2 of outdoor spaces, it is a building that responds to an extensive and repetitive school program with the difficulties that are typical of this type of public work, and which, however, has created an extraordinarily rich space, an internal landscape that is abstracted from an unattractive environment. The judging panel said that the

project ‘emphasizes the clarity of its linear scheme that contrasts with the changing character of the spatial episodes that are happening when travelling it. The quality of interstitial, compressed and expanded spaces, resolved with a limited palette of materials, is accentuated by the expressiveness of structural solutions that release wide open areas in relation to the outer courtyard. It is a contemporary, innovative and surprising response in the field of school architecture, which is sometimes limited to conventional and closed solutions. The quality of this work has made it worthy of mention as a finalist of the FAD Architecture and Interior Design Awards’.

Cambodiathemed adventure park planned for Valencia The Mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, has approved plans to build a new 'adventure park' as part of the established Bioparc complex. Taking its inspiration from the tropical rainforests of Cambodia, the new park will offer canyoning, abseiling, climbing and a multitude of slides, alongside a park and an area to bathe and relax. The project - proposed by Rain Forest, the company that currently manages Bioparc - will aim to recreate the temples of Angkor on Spain's Mediterranean coast. The head of Rain Forest, José Maldonado, said the project would be aiming for a "very natural" look, with "semi-ruined" buildings like the famous temples in Cambodia. For his part, Ribó expressed his "satisfaction" with the initiative, believing it to be "an important step" towards "completing the range of attractions for families and young people in the city". He said it would be "a very novel experience" that would put the finishing touch to the Parque de Cabecera area of the city and to Bioparc in particular, and promised to let the project go "full steam ahead" and that he would request a "small land reclassification" in order to be able to present it "without delay" to the Generalitat". Rain Forest's Maldonado underlined the importance for him of developing a project that would be "interesting for the people of the city, both environmentally friendly and cultural" while at the same time being "viable", given that over €25 million of private investment is involved. He believes this adventure park will complete the "circle of emotional, intuitive and artistic vision of nature that is at the heart of Bioparc with a more

active and entertaining vision of nature." We will be bringing an "attractive, fun, unique and novel area" to Valencia, he added. The new adventure park will cover an area of four hectares and will be accessed via the catering and customer service area in the central square, as is currently the case with Bioparc. Rain Forest were granted a 50-year licence to use the land in question 12 years ago and they pay an annual fee. With regard to the farmland that borders the land to be used for the park, Ribó explained that it would "remain separate from the park" and that the farms would "be restored to full use". One of them contains an ancient system for farming silk, and the intention is to plant more Mulberry trees and create and educational area for children.

Torrevieja council hits facebook The official social profiles of the City Council of Torrevieja have now been launched, as well as the profiles of the different departments and through which the requests, suggestions, complaints and issues that citizens have can be addressed. These official social profiles have been launched on the social network Facebook as it has the largest audience and reaches all ages. Work is also being done on the creation of profiles on Twitter and Instagram networks. The social profiles of Facebook link to the official website of the City of Torrevieja, which includes the information of all the departments, as well as useful information for users from official bodies, such as the Generalitat Valenciana and the Government of Spain. The current government team continues to manage the already created profiles of Youth, Celebrations, Commerce, Culture, Tourism, Habaneras and Sports. The creation of the new social profiles was motivated by the problem that the new team faced when dealing with pages created in association with personal profiles, which have been denied access or have been denied the ability to continue with their management. There has also been cases of pages created by individuals using the emblems and the name of the City of Torrevieja, with were not official pages and these have been reported to Facebook and removal has been

requested. These new pages have been created are managed from an exclusive profile for this purpose, which guarantees the social network Facebook that it is an official government agency. In the words of the Councilor for Innovation, the decision that they have been created in this way, and that the verification is being managed, is so that “the people who govern can manage them and they can be the official means of communication of the local council”. The main objective was to create a city brand, as many local town halls at the national level already have, that is recognised anywhere, giving it the prestige and recognition that a city like Torrevieja - the fifth most important of the Valencian Community and third of the province of Alicante - deserves. For this reason all the departments that have social profiles, bear the name of Torrevieja, followed by the name of the Department. Spain will remove rights for Brit residents post Brexit if the UK does not reciprocate Spain is demanding reciprocity from the United Kingdom in one of the most sensitive aspects of Brexit: treatment of its migrants. The Spanish government has urgently passed legislation in order to protect the rights of the 365,967 Britons who are officially resident in the country, but is yet to see similar mechanisms put in place in the United Kingdom for the Spaniards who have made that country their home. The caretaker foreign minister, Josep Borrell, has already conveyed this British the to concern government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and has warned that, if there is no equivalent move from the UK as the country leaves the European Union, the Spanish framework for British residents will decline. The future of more than half a million people – the 365,967 Britons who officially live in Spain and the 180,000 Spaniards who reside in the United Kingdom – will depend on the way that the divorce between London and Brussels is consummated. Both the governments of caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Party (PSOE) and of Boris Johnson of the Conservative

Party have said that they want to preserve the rights of this collective, but the formulas used to do so differ. The United Kingdom has put in place a general scheme for all European Union citizens – Spaniards among them – that, with some nuances, freezes the range of rights that they currently enjoy under the rules of the European Union. The mechanism consists of two categories: “settled status,” with very generous conditions, and socalled “pre-settled status,” which carries with it fewer rights. The official figures from the UK show a fall in the proportion of citizens who fall into the former category. In April of this year, when the system officially began, 66 percent of applicants received settled status. Today the percentage has fallen to 57percent. Spain has opted for a different route. In March, the government approved a law by royal decree that went into great detail to cover a potential “hard Brexit” – i.e. the UK crashing out of the bloc without a deal. This legislation covers nearly all of the facets of daily life for citizens, including the recognition of university degrees

and driving licenses, as well as healthcare coverage and work permits. It also guarantees, with some limitations, the continuance of the activity of British companies that are operating in Spain. The UK’s current Brexit minister, Steve Barclay, met recently in Madrid with Spain’s caretaker Foreign Minister Josep Borrell. “We have told them that our royal decree will ensure that everything remains the same in the case of a no-deal Brexit,” said Luis Marco Aguiriano, Spain’s secretary of state for the EU, He added: “But for that, reciprocity is necessary. And reciprocity cannot be guaranteed in half-measures – it is either there, or it isn’t.” From the start, the royal decree includes that conditionality. Article two of the legislation stipulates that if, within two months, the British authorities do not grant “reciprocal treatment” to Spanish citizens and companies, “the measures covered [by the legal text] will be suspended.” Aguiriano pointed to this requirement and warned that the UK has not currently covered it in law.

Drug traffickers rescue police A group of suspected drug traffickers ended up coming to the rescue of three police officers chasing them after their boats collided at sea. The bizarre turn of events took place off the coast of the Costa del Sol, as the Spanish maritime patrol agents were trying to intercept a boat suspected to be carrying narcotics. As the patrol vessel approached the boat, it hit the side, causing the officers to fall into the sea. The patrol boat was

"out of control" and circling them, putting the officers' lives in danger, authorities said. A police helicopter hovering overhead called on the four people on board to help using a megaphone, and the suspected drug smugglers pulled the agents to safety. "The crew of the helicopter of the Malaga Air Unit, upon realising the imminent danger to the civil guards,

required the occupants of the other vessel to support them by public address, being rescued by them and being all unharmed," the police statement read. The suspected drug traffickers were not spared following the kind gesture though - and the four people on board were arrested after officers recovered more than 80 bundles of hashish, weighing more than three tonnes.

GBP / EUR UPDATE A speech at the end of last week from Monetary Policy Committee member Michael Saunders sent sterling lower after contradicting the longestablished position of the Bank of England that interest rates could go up after Brexit. Despite his hawkish reputation, Saunders suggested that “it might well be appropriate… to loosen policy at some stage.” Brexit speculation and developments put pressure on the pound, although the manufacturing PMI provided some assistance after coming in at 48.3. Despite remaining in the contraction zone, it meant that manufacturing hit a four-month high, beating forecast by a point and beaten only by France. This week the market seemed less certain about what would happen next for Brexit, having a generally neutral reaction to the PM’s latest proposals. While the market waits to see if an extension to Article 50 is the next logical step or whether the EU27 will accept the new proposals, ecostats came into sharp focus. The was little response to the construction PMI missing forecast and declining at the sharpest pace since April 2009 as the outcome was largely expected due to “heightened Brexit uncertainty.” However, the Services PMI did cause greater concern; the IHS Markit/CPS purchasing managers' index fell to a six-month low of 49.5 in September.

Across all sectors, UK PMIs fell to 48.8 from 49.7; this is the lowest level since the referendum in June 2016 and the revised figures for second quarter gross domestic product confirmed that Britain's economy shrank by 0.2% in Q2. This put pressure on struggling sterling as the market awaits progress in the Brexit process. The downbeat picture from Europe continues; economists at the European Central Bank see "a more protracted weakness, the persistence of prominent downside risks and muted inflationary pressures".Business and consumer confidence measures from the European Commission were mostly either lower or unchanged in September and this was reflected in the ecostats which mostly fell short of forecast. Aside from the positive 50.1 PMI reading for French manufacturing, most showed a loss of momentum. This was particularly the case in Germany, where manufacturing hit a ten-year low of 41.7 and services fell to 51.4 for September after reading 54.8 in August. Political uncertainty in the UK and US protected the euro from significant losses against the pound and the US dollar, but elsewhere the euro struggled to keep pace as the slowdown on the continent continues to cast a shadow over the central currency.

Spanish produce to be subject to new US tariffs Spanish cheese, wine, olive oil and pork products will be affected by the United States government’s decision to introduce new duties on certain European Union exports starting on 18th October. The move comes after the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that the US can impose annual tariffs on as much as $7.5 billion worth of European

exports in retaliation for illegal government subsidies to aircraft maker Airbus. The largest award in WTO history follows 15 years of litigation. A list provided by the US Office of the Trade Representative (USTR) shows that “the bulk of the tariffs are being applied to imports from France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom – the four countries responsible for the illegal

subsidies,” according to a USTR press release. The USTR said that the tariff increases will be limited to 10% on large civil aircraft and 25% on agricultural and other products, but warned that “the US has the authority to increase the tariffs at any time, or change the products affected.” Listed products include yogurt,

butter, cherries and peaches from many EU member states. Other items subject to new import duties are fresh cheese, virgin olive oil, wine and pork cuts, which particularly affect Spain. France was the first country to warn that it will take steps if the US makes the new duties effective. “Evidently, we are foreseeing retaliation measures,” said French government spokesperson

Sibeth Ndiaye. The dispute could potentially trigger a tariff war between the EU and the US, although the White House has left the door open to negotiations. The dispute stems from the fact that France, Germany, Spain and Britain offered Airbus subsidies for the development of some of its most recent and advanced models, such as the A350 and A380.

ITV forces popular Spanish quiz show off TV A popular Spanish game show has been axed as British broadcaster ITV has won its legal battle over claims its 90s quiz ‘alphabetical’ was copied. The longrunning case against its major Spanish rival has finally been settled in ITVs favour. Pasapalabra is a word quiz game which ran on Antena 3 from 2000, before moving to Telecinco in 2005. The latter is now liable to pay out €15 million in compensation, plus an extra 1 percent of future profits. But now the hit Spanish game show, which pulled in two million viewers a day, has been permanently axed from the airwaves. Episode 3,292, broadcast by Telecinco last Tuesday (1st October) ended at 9:10pm, with host Christian Galvez, signing off with: “See you at the next show.” However this turned out to be the series’ last ever episode after a Supreme Court judge ordered the broadcast of the programme to ‘cease immediately.’ It has since emerged that Pasapalabra producer Mediaset, Spain’s largest TV network.

Home & Garden

Doctors prescribe gardening for anxiety and depression Scientists have found that spending two hours a week in nature is linked to better health and wellbeing. It’s maybe not entirely surprising then that some being increasingly are patients prescribed time in nature and community gardening projects as part of “green prescriptions”. Social prescriptions – non-medical treatments which have health benefits – are already used across the health services to tackle anxiety, loneliness and depression. They often involve the referral of patients to a voluntary or community organisation, where they can carry out activities which help to meet their social and emotional needs, and increasingly doctors are opting for community gardening – as this also has the added benefit of involving time spent in nature – even in highly built-up areas. And the evidence base for such treatments is growing – with research indicating that social prescribing can help to improve patients’ anxiety levels and general health.

The benefits of gardening Research shows that gardening can directly improve people’s wellbeing. And that taking part in community gardening can also encourage people to adopt healthier behaviours. It may be, for example, that neighbourhood projects can be reached on foot or by bicycle –

prompting people to take up more active transport options in their daily lives. Eating the produce from a community garden may also help people to form the habit of eating fresh, locally grown food.

CostaBlancaPeople 8th - 14th October 2019

connection may develop, not just with other people, but with the living world as a whole. Gardens also play a significant role in conserving biodiversity, by developing wildlife pockets and corridors across towns and cities. The inclusion of even a small pond in a garden can provide a home for important species such as amphibians. Gardens can also help to mitigate climate change. Their vegetation captures carbon and can improve air quality. Tree and shrub roots in the soil absorb water, reducing flood risk. So because people’s relationship with the living world affects their behaviour towards it, taking part in community gardening could also make people old and young more environmentally conscious and responsible. By connecting people to nature, it may be that community gardens can also help to transform society – allowing towns and cities to move towards more sustainable futures.

Community connections

Growing food is often the driving force behind community gardening projects, whether purely for the consumption of the gardeners or for local distribution or sale. Unlike growing on individual allotments or private gardens, community gardening requires an element of cooperation and collective planning. Working together towards shared goals can create a real sense of community. And in a garden, a feeling of

This process of using plants and gardens to improve health is known as social and therapeutic horticulture. On top of promoting physical and mental health benefits, social and therapeutic horticulture has also been shown to help improve people’s communication and thinking skills. Community gardens can bring together diverse groups of people and it’s possible to make these spaces widely inclusive and accessible. Raised beds and paved pathways, for example, can improve access for wheelchair users, while a complex sensory experience can be created using scents and sounds as well as visual stimuli.

APAHA fundraiser

Animal rescue charity APAH’s recently held fun day and auction has raised 1,356.57e. There were an considerable 140 Lots; many of them brand new and still in the original packaging, and at 4pm when the auction was about to begin, there were just 4 people, but that soon changed and the bar soon began to fill up.

Bar owners Rob and Paul did the charity proud; Rob is a born auctioneer and the organisers claim Paul could sell ice cubes to Eskimos. Even their staff joined in the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as cats and dogs. Rob's little helpers were three of APAH’s hard working volunteers who

acted as runners; showing off all the items with enthusiasm and it all added up to a lively, fun and very lucrative afternoon. When the charity eventually called an end to the day, it had sold almost all of the Lots. As it was hot and humid day, unsurprisingly, the items that didn't sell included wall heaters, new blankets and quilts; much too 'winter' for people to be thinking about. The final total far exceeded the charities hopes for the day and because everyone had such a great time, Paul has kindly offered to host another auction towards the end of the year, when hopefully people will be keener to buy all the cold weather items, along with all the additional things that the charity will be putting aside between now and then. The organisers said: “It is amazing what people donate to charities and without the people who donate and the people who come to buy, charities such as APAH could not continue the work that goes on 365 days per year, looking after the dogs and cats in our care.”

Record breaking night for Debra Record-breaking night has raised an amazing €8,852.78 at The 10th Butterfly Charity Ball in aid of The Butterfly Children’s Charity, DEBRA, held recently at La Marina Camping Resort and organised by Mary Chambers and Sue Rogers. The glittering annual event hosted by Tommy Rogers was attended by 200 guests, who enjoyed a Poolside Cava reception whilst being entertained by Graeme Mykal of Absolute Magic entertaining our guests, followed by a three-course meal in the La Marina Restaurant and top entertainment courtesy of Jo Delgado. Host Tommy Rogers worked hard for the charity to keep the donations coming. There were three Lucky Squares winners who won €75 each: Debbie Carter, Graham Chambers and Mary Chambers. Debbie & Graham kindly donated their winnings back to the charity. Heads & Tails was won by Hazel Towers who also kindly donated the €125 back to the charity. The main prize of the evening was €200 Travel Vouchers won by Simon Rainbow who donated his prize back to be auctioned which raised €210. There were numerous other prizes donated by local businesses. The auction allowed guests to bid for green fees and buggies from Golf La Finca, Villamartin and La Ramblas. A 2 night stay at The Marina Hotel, Benidorm, was donated by Vivalia

Travel. Dave Bone successfully bid €850 for a minibreak at The Sunborn Yacht Hotel, Gibraltar & Paloma Blanca Boutique Hotel, Marbella. Tanaya Philips and Lorraine Peetoom paid €380 for an Electric Scooter which they are going to donate to the Flood Relief fund. Our sponsor Water Filters Spain kindly donated 9 water filters which were snapped up by our guests and added more funds to the pot. The very popular golden butterflies were available again this year and the winners were Susan and Colin Marchant receiving €500 for which they gave a €250 donation to the charity. DEBRA also received many individual donations from our guests, Sheena Stewart donated €95 on the night from her commission of selling Epic mascara and earlier this month Sheena sent a €105 donation directly to the charity from her birthday money. The Butterfly Children Charity, DEBRA, would like to thank Mary

Chambers and Sue Rogers and everyone who worked extremely hard behind the scene to make this event such a success, including Tommy Rogers for comparing the evening; local business from Urbanisation La Marina down to Gibraltar who continue to donate so generously with fabulous prizes and Cristina & Osvaldo and all their staff at La Marina Camping Resort for all their hard work and for looking after our guests. The organisers said: “We could not raise this amazing amount of money if it was not for our guests who continually support this event and who give so very generously to our Charity, we thank you all and we are truly grateful, we look forward to seeing you all again soon. Next year’s Butterfly Charity Ball will be held on Friday 25th September 2020, if you would like to attend this event next year please contact Mary Chambers on 616 076 072.”

Barbados

once inhabiting the island; or, more fancifully, to a visual impression of a beard formed by the sea foam that sprays over the outlying reefs. Geography and climate Barbados is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the other West Indies Islands. Barbados is the easternmost island in the Lesser Antilles. It is flat in comparison to its island neighbours to the west, the Windward Islands. The island rises gently to the central highland region, with the high point of the nation being Mount Hillaby in the geological Scotland District 340 m (1,120 ft) above sea level. The country generally experiences two seasons, one of which includes noticeably higher rainfall. Known as the "wet season", this period runs from June to November. By contrast, the "dry season" runs from December to May.

Barbados is a sovereign island country in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean region of North America. It is 34 kilometres (21 miles) in length and up to 23 km (14 mi) in width, covering an area of 432 km2 (167 sq mi). It is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic and 100 km (62 mi) east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea; Inhabited by Kalinago people since the 13th century, and prior to that by other Amerindians, Barbados was visited by Spanish navigators in the late 15th century and claimed for the Spanish Crown. It first appeared in a Spanish map in 1511 The Portuguese visited the island in 1536, but they left it unclaimed, with their only remnants being an introduction of wild hogs for a good supply of meat whenever the island was visited. An English ship, the Olive Blossom, arrived in Barbados in 1625; its men took possession of it in the name of King James I. In 1627, the first permanent settlers arrived from England, and it became an English and later British colony As a wealthy sugar colony, it became an English center of the African slave trade until slavery was outlawed in 1807. In 1966, Barbados became an independent state and Commonwealth realm with the British Monarch (presently Queen Elizabeth II) as hereditary head of state. Etymology The name Barbados is either the Portuguese word Barbados or the Spanish equivalent los Barbados, both meaning "the bearded ones". It is unclear whether "bearded" refers to the long, hanging roots of the bearded fig-tree (Ficus citrifolia), indigenous to the island; or to the allegedly bearded Caribs

Culture The culture of Barbados is a blend of West African, Creole, Indian and British cultures present in Barbados. Citizens are officially called Barbadians. The term "Bajan" (pronounced BAY-jun) may have come from a localised pronunciation of the word Barbadian, which at times can sound more like "Bar-bajan". The largest carnival-like cultural event that takes place on the island is the Crop Over festival. As in many other Caribbean and Latin American countries, Crop Over is an important event for many people on the island, as well as the thousands of tourists that flock to there to participate in the annual events. Cuisine Bajan cuisine is a mixture of African, Indian, Irish, Creole and British influences. A typical meal consists of a main dish of meat or fish, normally marinated with a mixture of herbs and spices, hot side dishes, and one or more salads. The meal is usually served with one or more sauces. The national dish of Barbados is Cou-Cou & fried Flying Fish with spicy gravy. Another traditional meal is "Pudding and Souse" a dish of pickled pork with spiced sweet potatoes. A wide variety of seafood and meats are also available. The Mount Gay Rum visitors centre in Barbados claims to be the world's oldest remaining rum company, with earliest confirmed deed from 1703. Cockspur Rum and Malibu are also from the island. Music In music, eight-time Grammy Award winner Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born in Saint Michael) is one of Barbados' best-known artists and one of the best selling music artists of all time, selling over 200 million records worldwide. In 2009 she was appointed as an Honorary Ambassador of Youth and Culture for Barbados by the late Prime Minister, David Thompson.

Drifting apart

She's a flirt

My husband and I are so busy with our jobs. We work different hours and hardly see each other. When we get time off, because the other is invariably working, we go out with our respective friends a lot. I feel we are almost leading separate lives and drifting apart. We talked about it and agreed something needs to be done.

My new wife has always been a flirt. I notice how she still desires the attention of other men even after we married. She says it is harmless and she is only having fun, but someone told me that she had been seen having several cosy conversations with a man where she works, and she is being secretive with her phone. I want loyalty from her and a future where we only want each other. I don’t look at anyone else, and I don’t understand why she doesn’t feel the same.

Relationships suffer when couples don’t mesh their lives through shared activities, recreational companionship or spending enough time together. Time needs to be set aside to enjoy conversation, common interests, holidays and fun. Time spent together should be anticipated with pleasure. Without this component over time couples drift apart and have little in common. You say you need your jobs and of course work is important. But, if your schedules don’t become more compatible your identity as husband and wife may be lost completely. Decide what is more important in your lives, and make changes. Finding a hobby you can both do together would be a good start.

Flirtatious behaviour in a marriage can be dangerous. Engaging in intimate conversations with members of the opposite sex leads to emotional experiences that cloud judgment, and can ultimately progress toward physical intimacies outside of marriage. You took vows to be faithful to each other, but your wife is pushing the boundaries. Your marriage could be in trouble. If you can get her along to couples counselling this may help.

Santander bank boss 'world's Woman gave neighbour a box most powerful woman' containing severed head Santander Bank boss Ana Botín has been named the 'world's most powerful woman' by Fortune magazine in its latest annual '50 Most Influential Women', where she shares the podium with GlaxoSmithKline CEO Emma Walmsley and Gree Electric Appliances chair Dong Mingzhu.

Ana Botín has returned to her number one spot after dropping to second a year ago, with Fortune commenting on the 'progress' she has made since taking over as chairwoman in 2014 in 'reinforcing the bank's capital', 'increasing customer loyalty' – with the client base having grown by 40 percent since 2015

– and 'digitalising platforms', with the number of online banking customers having risen to 32 million by the end of 2018. Fortune refers to the 'solid global effort' made by Santander bank in 2018, with a turnover of over €48.4 billion. “This growth has been achieved largely thanks to the bank's activity in Latin America – mainly Brazil and México – and has been supported by a reduction in costs in Europe,” the article states. Ana Botín's being named as 'world's most powerful woman' comes on the fifth anniversary, almost to the date, of her taking over running Banco Santander, which broke into the UK in 2004 by buying up Abbey National. According to Sra Botín herself in a presentation for shareholders this week in London, profits have risen by 87 percent in these five years, reaching €7.8bn, whilst its profitability on the RoTE scale has risen by 210 points, to 11.7 percent. Additionally, Santander group has reinforced its level of CET1 Fully Loaded capital to 11.3 percent, an increase of 350 points, also in the last five years. The '50 Most Influential Women' list has become a

barometer for female influence in business and major corporations – according to Fortune, only 14 women were at the head of the boardroom table in the largest 500 companies in the world, although this is a slight increase on the previous year, when there were just 12. A third of the women in the top 50 are new entries this year, having been placed at the head of large multi-national firms, and include Jessica Tan, CEO of China's Ping An Group; Ilham Kadri, CEO of the Belgian chemical company Solvay, and Emma Fitzgerald of Puma Energy, one of the biggest companies in Singapore. Women who have recently been promoted within their existing firms are also featured – Andrea Marques de Almeida, CEO of Brazilian fuel giant Petrobras; Anne Rigail of Air France; and Maki Akaida of the budget Japanese clothing chain Uniqlo. Some represent industries that have rarely, if ever, had a female presence at the top, such as the petroleum, metal manufacturing and chemical sectors. In total, the top 50 women listed in Fortune come from 19 different countries.

Back in February of this year, Carmen Merino, a 61-year-old Spanish woman who lives in the Cantabrian municipality of Castro Urdiales, called her regular cleaning lady. A long time had passed since she had last requested the woman’s services, and she gave her precise instructions on what she had to do. She told her to bring her car and park it in her building. When the domestic employee she found several “big, black and heavy” trash bags by the front door. According to the statement that the cleaning lady made to the Civil Guard, after she cleaned the entire house, Merino asked her to take the bags to her car and to dispose of them wherever she could. The authorities believe that those trash bags could have contained the body of Carmen’s partner Jesús Mari Baranda, 67, after the man’s severed head was found in a box that Merino had given to a neighbour for safekeeping. The horrifying discovery was made a week ago and has prompted all kinds of speculation. The police are now looking for the rest of the man’s remains in the Meruelo trash dump, one of the biggest in Cantabria. They are not,

however, hopeful of finding the body. Merino is being held in custody on suspicion of murder. It was in the early hours of Saturday, September 28 when Carmen’s friend, a woman from Utrera, Seville, decided to investigate exactly what was inside the box that Carmen had given her in March. Her friend had told her that it contained “sex toys,” and that she wanted it out of her property ahead of a possible search by the Civil Guard related to the disappearance of Baranda, which was reported by one of his cousins. The box, however, had started to give off a terrible smell, which is what prompted the neighbour to open it up. Tests have confirmed that the severed head belonged to Baranda, and according to sources close to the investigation, had signs of having been manipulated – “possibly burned.” Tests are ongoing in the Cantabrian capital of Santander in order to try to determine the date and cause of the man’s death. It was not until March of this year that one of the victim’s cousins reported the disappearance of Baranda, who used to work for a bank in Bilbao and was divorced with two children, with whom he

had lost contact. “Carmen told us that he had gone on a trip,” the relative explained last week. According to his version of events, Merino told Baranda’s family that he had changed his mobile phone, and gave them a new number. His relatives received messages from that new number, but as time passed and given the tone of the messages, their suspicions were raised. Despite the circumstances, however, the relatives never suspected that Merino could be involved in her partner’s disappearance.

Motive The motive of the crime continues to be an unknown, although investigators suspect that it is related to money. Merino did not work and had no income, and was completely dependent on her partner. According to police sources, the suspect “has no criminal record,” but did have problems with money in the past, albeit without having been reported to the police. During the time that Baranda was missing, his pension was still being paid into his bank account, to which Merino had access. Now that his death has come to light, however, that source of income will have disappeared.

S

pain’s labour market is feeling the economic slowdown. According to figures released by the Labuor Ministry recently, job creation in September was up by 3,224 people from August, as measured as the number of new contributors to the Social Security system. But this is the weakest figure for the ninth month of the year since 2013, a time when the country was still in the grip of recession. Registered unemployment rose by 13,907 new claims in September. This is a smaller increase than in previous years, and places the total number of people without a job at

3,079,711. A look at annual figures also confirms that the economy is slowing down. In the last 12 months, Social Security affiliation grew by 460,739 people, 2.44% more than the previous year. While this is a strong pace of growth, it mostly reflects the momentum of previous months, and it is still the lowest rate since 2014. The data also show that there were 19.32 million employed contributors to the Social Security system last month. Hiring was led by the education sector, which traditionally needs more workers in September and

October. At the other end of the spectrum, the hospitality industry registered the smallest job increase as the peak tourism season came to an end. Retail and the health sector also lost a significant number of jobs. In line with the nature of Spain’s labour market, a majority of the 16.7 million job contracts that were signed in the first nine months of the year were for temporary positions, while only 9.5% were for long-term employment. This means that although employment is growing in aggregate terms, there is a lot of instability in the job market.

Enjoy an excerpt from our book, “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” RULE NUMBER 12

FIRST IMPRESSION IS EVERYTHING.

This rule is right up there with bad breath on a first date. Nothing is harder to overcome than a bad first impression. How does your entrance look? What kind of art is on the walls, and will it appeal to 99% of buyers and not just you? Work to manage the first impression and emphasize the positives. If the front door is older or outdated and the paint is chipped, put on a fresh coat of paint and plant simple flowers to brighten it up. Stay away from ornate furniture, fake flowers, or tables in the entrance, and instead create a calm and peaceful space. The first impression lingers, and carries through to the next room. Don’t discount the impression your pets make. In fact, some people hate animals or the fact that the home was subject to animal odour or wear. Pets shouldn’t be around and neither should their beds, toys, or photos. What if your buyer is allergic to animals? Find a way to keep the animals out of the picture during a showing. You would be amazed at what showing agents encounter every year. There’s always that home seller who leaves the beds unmade,

leaves the dogs or cats out (even when a buyer could be allergic or have a very negative opinion of cats or dogs), or leaves some other unpleasant visible display. A dirty kitchen, unmade beds, animal smells, and bills and clutter are the worst offenses. If you leave bills out, it immediately triggers a memory about a bill that’s unpaid. Don’t make the buyer think of their own problems. Clean up your space and help the buyer see joy and peace instead of chaos and mess. It might seem silly, but the first impression really is hard to overcome. Buyers see a house in minutes, and often have too many to see to dwell on the first impression. They are seeking to get in and out fast, and create a short list. Make sure you end up on the short list. When a house starts out with a negative it usually cascades from there. Make sure there’s nothing that would cause buyers to say, “let’s not even get out of the car—let’s just go to the next home” like dead plants, rotted wood hanging, or an ugly front door. The knee-jerk reaction of the buyer is that, hey, this person really doesn’t care about the outside, so they must not care much about the inside or even the mechanical condition of this home. The impression, “what else is wrong here?” is a difficult thought process to overturn, and makes it nearly impossible for the agent to redirect their buyers into writing an offer that would reflect a fair market value. Even the smallest home makeover can do wonders for the first impression. Selling your home? Enjoy the journey!

Thomas Cook collapse hits Mallorca

Some Spanish beaches have been left deserted as thousands of Britons return to UK after the collapse of the world’s oldest travel agency. Beaches and holiday resorts across the Canaries and Balerics have been left looking like ghost towns after the collapse of Thomas Cook saw a mass exodus of British tourists leaving behind empty deckchairs and hotels which face imminent closure as the compulsory liquidation, resulted in the cancellation of all of the business's flights and holiday packages. It also brought about the biggest peacetime repatriation since the Second World War as hundreds of thousands of British tourists stranded abroad had to be rescued. One Brit, who owns a bar in

Majorca, said business had been catastrophic since the collapse of the travel firm. Another, owner of the Rose and Crown pub in Cala Millor, told UK national newspapers that trade had plummeted this week and was 'sometimes down to none' at all. There are also reports that at least 500 Spanish hotels are facing imminent closure due to the drop in British holidaymakers. One British couple were allegedly locked out of their hotel in Majorca's infamous party resort of Magaluf after the Thomas Cook collapse. The 23year-olds claimed they were asked to cough up £1,100, despite already paying £750 each for their 10-day holiday at the four-star HM Martinique Hotel.

The couple, who flew out on Thursday, 19th September, claim that when Thomas Cook collapsed four days into their holiday they returned to their rooms to find them locked with all their belongings inside. They claim staff threatened they would have to spend the night on the streets if they didn't repay the £1,100. The paid said: “It caused uproar. We don't have that kind of money; it took us two and a half years to pay for this holiday. "The management gave us until midnight or we'd have to leave. That would have literally left us on the street." After talks with the Civil Aviation Authority, the hotel agreed to allow the guests back into their rooms.

RuPaul’s Drag race brings LGBTQ to mainstream culture First broadcast in the early 2000s as a niche talent show on relatively unknown US cable

channel Logo TV, Drag Race is now big business and has moved to a far more visible new home on MTV’s VH1. A UK version is set to debut on BBC Three in October—and with Canadian and Australian editions in the works, Drag Race has become a cultural juggernaut that is influencing our everyday language and internet behaviour. Created by RuPaul Charles— the self-styled “Supermodel of the World”, Drag Race is a loud and proud LGBTQ+ show that subverts the usual trope of typically American talent shows

such as Project Runway or America’s Next Top Model, by choosing drag queens as its contestants. On the show, drag queens fight for the crown of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” by competing in singing, dancing, lipsyncing, and acting as well as various comedy challenges… and sewing. Winning—or even just participating in—Drag Race can be life-changing for drag queens. Aside from the crown, America’s Next Drag Superstar wins $100,000 and travels the world for a year representing the show. But in the past few years, it has become clear that Drag Race has done way more than entertaining its ever-growing army of fans. It has helped open the door of drag, LGBTQ+, and black queer culture for a mainstream audience— introducing the conventions, habits, rituals, and attitudes of these subcultures to the mainstream public. Through Drag Race, the language of drag is not just gaining recognition by a wider public—it is being turned into a new art form through memes, GIFs, and content that floods

millions of people’s social media feeds. Drag Race is manna from heaven for content creators and for niche fandoms—groups of die-hard fans that veer away from traditional, mainstream entertainment. In 2018, the show did a crossover episode with America’s Next Top Model. RuPaul’s appearance on Jeopardy, and season nine winner Sasha Velour’s obsession with Riverdale, have left fans begging for new crossovers. Fan blogs have called for Drag Race/American Horror Story or Disney/Drag Race mash-ups. One of the most famous Drag Race crossovers, however, is Fire WERK With Me, a Facebook group with more than 10,000 members and write-ups in PAPER Magazine. The group blends Drag Race and Twin Peaks by juxtaposing both shows’ characters and quotes through memes, gifs, and videos made and posted exclusively by fans, who need to be added and accepted onto the group by moderators. These tend to contain language and humour that only members of that subculture would be able to understand. The group has been acknowledged by RuPaul in interviews and, recently, by a variety of social media posts.

Countdown's Riley stifles laughter as contestant spells out rude word Countdown's Rachel Riley was unable to hide her giggles after a cheeky contestant spelled out the word 'orgies' on the board during a recent episode. The 33-year-old maths whizz, who has previously divulged her favourite explicit words to come up on the show, looked delighted with this latest addition. The word was picked by contestant Paul Nixon, who appeared very pleased with himself for finding the word out of the mix of letters available. As it read the word out to the show's host Hewer, the former public relations consultant managed to keep a straight face as he repeated the word back to him. Confirming that the word was definitely in the dictionary, Susie Dent agreed that the word was correct while Pam Ayres admitted the only other six-letter word was 'Rejigs'. Rachel has been presenting on the British game show for more than a decade and to commemorate the milestone in January, she shared a selection of the rudest words which have ever come up on the board during the programme. She treated her followers to some of the cheekier words which have been picked at random over

the years on Instagram. The words, which were usually accompanied by a less than impressed expression from Rachel, included orgasmed, bumh**e, erection and vibrator. Several other phrases which also made it into Rachel's countdown of the worst words were phallus and horniest. The Essex native left her fans in hysterics after sharing the

amusing snaps on her Twitter page, where followers praised the 'best post ever'. One said: 'My favourite ones are when the letters are picked and put up like that. Everyone's reactions are always so hilarious.' Rachel joined the show in 2008 after she took over from Countdown icon Carol Voderman and was an instant hit with viewers after filling Carol's very large shoes. She was a recent Oxford graduate when she joined the

show and the tenth anniversary episode of her joining aired on Friday. Rachel, who began dating Strictly professional Pasha Kovalev when they met on the show five years ago, revealed that she was about to celebrate ten years as the letters and numbers guru on Countdown. But added that she likes being a bit more naughty on its evening mash-up with 8 Out Of 10 Cats during an appearance on Lorraine. 'It was supposed to be a one-off and we've done over 100 now, it's brought it to a new audience,' she said. It comes as 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown will compete for the National Television Award for Best Quiz Show, but Rachel admitted she will not be attending the ceremony. She said: 'I could choose between the NTA's, a Manchester United event or going to government to speak about antisemitism about holocaust memorial day. 'I've been doing this 10 years, I hope I've banked enough credibility for people to know this is a serious thing that needs a bit of light shown on it. I've shown so much support, the attempts to discredit us are elaborate.'

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most common diseases among workers who perform tasks related to manual efforts and repetitive movements of the arm and affects 3percent of the population, mainly women in their 40s and 60s. “This Neuropathy”, says Dr. Vicente Carratalá. head of the Hand and Arm Unit of Quirónsalud Valencia Hospital, “occurs when the median nerve that extends from the forearm to the hand is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist. This disorder is very common in people who carry out activities that need flexion and repetitive extension of the wrist mainly in household chores, work on assembly lines, carpenters, painters or prolonged use of the computer mouse. According to Dr. Luís Sánchez Navas, head of the Hand and Arm Unit of Quirónsalud Alicante, the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include “the feeling of pain, tingling and numbness in the palm of the hand and in the thumb, index and middle fingers, which frequently worsens at night, and may

wake up the patient feeling the need to take the hand out from the sheets and shake it, seeking relief. With the worsening of the compression of the Median Nerve these symptoms become more intense and a feeling of clumsiness and lack of strength when performing pincer gestures begins to appear due to an atrophy of the muscles dependent on this nerve.” One of the peculiar features of this disease is the delay in its diagnosis, as Dr. Sánchez Navas explains, “patients tend to assume their symptoms, the electromyographic test usually takes a long time to be performed, and the results do not always match well with the intensity of clinical symptoms. As a result of this, patients go to the specialist when the condition is already severe, obtaining slower and less satisfactory surgical results, as the nerve must recover from severe and prolonged compression.” One of the most significant advances

in the treatment of this neuropathy has been the approach using minimally invasive techniques, including endoscopic techniques, being able to release the nerve throughout its path through the wrist by making just a one

centimetre incision with a minimum involvement of the soft tissues, which leads to least discomfort in the postoperative period, with minimal pain and almost immediate mobility. As Dr. Vicente Carratalá explains, “this new technique represents a great advance in the surgery of this type of disease as

opposed to traditional surgery, where the procedure required a longer incision in the palm of the hand with greater involvement of the soft tissues and longer recovery time due to the pain caused by this approach.” Benchmarks in the treatment of hand and arm injuries The Hand and Arm Units of Quirónsalud Alicante and Valencia, have experts in minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of joint injuries such as arthroscopy, both wrist and hand, including rhizarthrosis or arthrosis of the base of the thumb, elbow and shoulder, which allows an optimal and precise treatment of ligament and tendon injuries that may appear. They are also specialists in regenerative therapies such as the eco-guided infiltration of platelet growth factors in

tendon and muscle injuries. Arthroscopy is a technique for the treatment of joint injuries with the aid of a camera and minimal incisions. This offers the great advantage of being able to explore the joint in its entirety, without depending on the limited field obtained with conventional open surgery, working with magnification and having state-of-the-art materials and implants, through which the lesion can be treated very precisely without the need for aggressive surgery or large incisions. This is highly beneficial for the subsequent recovery of the patient. Also, the fact that working together in a coordinated manner with traumatologists, rehabilitators and physiotherapists, regardless of the injury requiring surgery or otherwise, provides a significant advantage in the early recovery of injuries.

EastEnders' Phil becomes unexpected 'gay icon' A punch up in the Queen Vic is standard fare for BBC’s EastEnders, especially when Phil Mitchell’s involved – but 1st October episode was especially satisfying for viewers. After a long struggle to accept his son’s sexuality, fans were thrilled to see Phil finally stick up for Ben when Callum’s Dad, Jonno, launched a torrent of homophobic abuse against him. The dramatic scene unfolded when Jonno demanded to know why Callum’s

marriage to Whitney didn’t go ahead. Callum bravely came out as gay to his father, sealing the deal by planting a kiss on Ben. Seeing this, Jonno immediately lashed out at Ben, shouting: “It’s him that’s turned you into one of them! A disgusting muck-loving f****t.” He got no further before Phil cut his rant short with a famous Mitchell right hook to the face. It was a refreshing change for the burly EastEnder as he had

previously refused to support Ben’s sexuality, even adopting Jay as a surrogate son in his place. But it seems he’s finally turned a corner as he wasn’t prepared to let Jonno’s homophobic insults stand – and fans took to Twitter share their delight. By the end of the night #PhilMitchell was trending on Twitter. Happy endings are notoriously rare on the BBC soap, but we’re hoping we’ll see more like this one in future!

Women and Autoimmune Diseases Nearly 80 percent of people who suffer from autoimmune diseases are women, and why that's the case has long been a medical mystery. But new research suggests the answer may have to do with differences between men's and women's genes - a discovery that could pave the way for better diagnostic methods and treatments in the future. Autoimmune disorders (such as psoriasis, Crohn's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis) occur when the body’s immune system attacks itself, becoming overactive and flooding the body with inflammatory proteins. Short-term, localised inflammation is useful for healing; too much or for too long, however, is harmful to cells and organ systems. To date, most of the research on why women are so disproportionately affected by these disorders has focused on sex hormones, like estrogen and testosterone. The latest study, published in the journal Nature Immunology, took a fresh approach, which paid off: "We found a completely new angle," said senior author Johann Gudjonsson, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Michigan, in a press release. Specifically, his team

identified hundreds of genderspecific differences in how certain genes expressed themselves. These differences, they found, were not influenced by changes in sex hormones. Yet, they appeared to make women more susceptible to developing an overactive immune system Dr. Gudjonsson’s lab focuses on autoimmune diseases of the skin, including psoriasis and lupus. (While lupus often affects the whole body, four of the 11 criteria for diagnosis relate to the skin.) For this study, however, they analysed genetic material from skin samples of 82 healthy men and women. None of the participants had autoimmune diseases. Nevertheless, they did have some “striking differences in gene expression,” said first author Yun Liang, PhD, a dermatology research investigator, in the statement. In total, the researchers discovered 661 genes that were expressed differently in women versus men. Many were already known to be involved in immune function, Liang added, and some have even been linked to autoimmune disease. “This finding suggested that these sex-biased genes contributed to not only increased disease susceptibility but possibly

also heightened disease activity,” the researchers wrote in their paper. “In this context, we note that being female is the strongest risk factor for the development of autoimmunity, and it dwarfs the identified autoimmune genetic risk variants.”

Insight The team was even was able to identify one protein, called VGLL3, as a “master regulator” of inflammation and autoimmunity. In their analysis of healthy skin samples, VGLL3 was only active in women. But when the researchers looked at biopsies from patients with autoimmune diseases, they saw it activated in men with lupus, as well. The findings provide new insight into how gender contributes to autoimmune disease, the authors wrote, and highlight the importance of studying men and women separately. They also suggest that these genes and proteins may one day be useful as biomarkers for assessing who’s most at risk, or as targets for new medications. "Learning more about these disease processes in each gender will provide opportunities for therapeutic interventions we did not imagine before,” said Dr. Gudjonsson, “including both prevention and treatment."

Health Benefits of Ginger In the kitchen, we’ve long used gingerin anything from ginger biscuits and ginger tea to Indian- and Asian-inspired dishes-as a flavour-agent. But in addition to being one of the most delicious and distinctive spices on the planet, ginger root has long been touted as a panacea for an array of health concerns. Today, the health benefits of ginger are becoming more recognised by both Western medicine practitioners and the wellness-minded among us with anecdotal evidence. Nutritionally, the spice is a star. In a whole cup of chopped fresh ginger root, you'll find just around 80 calories, less than 18 grams of carbohydrates, and about 2 grams of fibre and protein. Toss in a tablespoon to a recipe and you're adding less than 5 calories, which is why experts recommend it. Ginger is used in such small amounts and is so low in calories that it doesn't ever offer high quantities of calories, carbs, or sugar. Each zingy bite of ginger also contains vitamins and minerals like iron, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. While the root itself may look intimidating, don’t let yourself be turned off; ginger is actually available (and beneficial) in many different forms. Ginger can be used fresh, dried,

powdered, peeled, or as an oil, chips, or juice. If its flavour and nutrient profile aren’t enough to send you running to the farmers market or grocery store, perhaps the health benefits of ginger will. Read on to learn more about how ginger can boost your well-being.

Ginger can quell nausea Ever been told to pop a ginger

lozenge during an especially bumpy car ride? That’s because ginger can help calm an upset stomach. Research suggests ginger can remedy nausea from travel, pregnancy, or even chemotherapy. In fact, one Thai study found that ginger worked as well as dimenhydrinate (the active ingredient in over-the-counter motion-sickness meds) at preventing and

treating nausea in pregnant women. However, because ginger has so many bioactive compounds, if you have medical conditions or are pregnant, you should alert your health care professional that you are taking ginger and how much.

It may reduce bloat, gas, and constipation Ginger might also relieve other GI issues, thanks to its digestive enzyme called zingibain that helps the body break down protein. The compound potentially helps the food you eat pass through your system more easily–and, in turn, reduces the bloat, gas, or constipation you’re experiencing. But when you're already feeling like a pufferfish, the last thing you want to do is eat a full meal that happens to include the spice. Instead, enjoy a cup of homemade ginger tea-made by steeping a few slices of sliced ginger in a mug of hot water for five to 10 minutes-and sip it slowly. (Or try brands like Yogi Ginger Tea and Traditional Medicinals Organic Ginger Aid.)

Ginger may help fight infections When you feel a cold coming on, you might turn to OJ. But fresh ginger juice

(or a ginger smoothie) may make a better choice, thanks to the gingerol— an active compound—in ginger that may help you fight off viruses. In fact, one laboratory study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that fresh ginger may be effective against human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), a common cause of respiratory infections.

And fight inflammation Gingerol is an antioxidant in ginger that may help reduce inflammation. Research suggests ginger extract supplements and topical ginger ointment may lessen stiffness and pain in people with osteoarthritis (but work with your health care provider to devise a comprehensive treatment plan for any inflammatory condition).

And it can aid weight loss Herbs and spices in general are beneficial for dropping weight because the added flavours can help you feel more satisfied with lower-calorie foods. Ginger's no different: One small study published in the journal Metabolism found that men who drank a hot ginger beverage (made from ginger powder and hot water) after eating felt full for longer. “The results, showing enhanced thermogenesis and reduced feelings of hunger with ginger consumption, suggest a potential role of ginger in weight management,” the researchers wrote.

Why does spicy food feel hot? If you’ve ever had delicious Mexican street food, eaten a big platter of Buffalo wings or been to an Indian restaurant, you’re more than familiar with the experience of getting a runny nose, watery eyes, burning tongue and even sweating that comes with eating spicy food. But why does your body get so heated up and your tongue burn from spicy foods even when they’re at room temperature or cold? The answer is pretty simple: capsaicin. An active component in spicy foods, capsaicin is an irritant. When you eat spicy food, capsaicin binds to receptors in your mouth (known as VR1 receptors) that are actually meant to detect heat in order to prevent you from burning your mouth. Because capsaicin activates these receptors, your body

responds the way it would if you ate something hot, and as a result, you sweat in order to cool down, your heart rate rises to increase metabolism and your nose runs and your eyes tear up in response to the irritant. While those reactions don’t exactly sound enjoyable, your body also

releases endorphins, chemicals in your brain that relieve pain and increase happiness, when you eat spicy food. So if you’re ever feeling down, grab a glass of milk (a far better alternative to dissolving capsaicin than water) and eat the spiciest foods you can.

A whisky company has sparked confusion online after they announced "a first of its kind" alcoholic drink served in an edible capsule similar to a laundry pod. The Glenlivet, one of the biggest whisky companies in the world, has unveiled its "Capsule Collection" to coincide with London Cocktail Week in which you drink 23ml of whisky by swallowing a biodegradable capsule made from seaweed. "Enjoy them by simply popping them in your mouth for an instant burst of flavour—no need for a glass, ice or cocktail stirrer!," the company wrote on Instagram while sharing a video detailing the invention. Following the announcement, thousands of people on social media couldn't help but compare the capsules to Tide Pods and the online challenge which spread last year. "I saw Tide Pods trending and feared someone had poisoned themselves," wrote Twitter user @ImThatDoug. "Turns out it's because someone has invented alcoholic Tide Pods now... so it was worse than I thought." "An entire generation were told not to eat tide pods and you just set them all back," added @praxxxxis. The 'Tide Pod Challenge' was a social media campaign in which people filmed themselves biting

into the laundry product. The meme, which also had people posting fake recipes online using Tide Pods, became so widespread that YouTube announced it would be pulling all videos of the challenge from their site for violating their rules which prohibits videos that encourage "dangerous activities that have an inherent risk of physical harm." In January 2018, the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) issued a statement expressing "continued concern" over the improper use of laundry detergent packets by teenagers. "During the first two weeks of 2018, poison control centres handled 39 cases of teens intentionally exposed to a liquid laundry packet," the statement added. "In just the past week, we've seen another 47 cases, for a

total of 86 between January 1 and January 21, 2018. We cannot stress enough how dangerous this is to the health of individualsit can lead to seizure, pulmonary edema, respiratory arrest, coma, and even death." Announcing the new whisky product, Miriam Eceolaza, director of The Glenlivet, said: "As a brand that celebrates originality, we are always looking to break the conventions that have determined how single malt Scotch has historically been enjoyed," reports Food and Wine. "The Glenlivet Capsule Collection does exactly that, and we're excited to see how people react when they try our glassless cocktails. Our founder, George Smith, always went against the grain, bucking tradition and doing things differently."

Turn odds and ends into mouthwatering meal Avocado toast has a reputation of being basic, but Avocado toast is satisfying and delicious, and the beloved toast is not coming off menus anytime soon. And if that day does come, rest assured there are many other toasts to fall back on that involve ingredients already in your fridge and lying around in the veggie basket. A newer trend on restaurant menus involves whipping up seasonally-inspired toast creations that can easily be created back at home. From peaches and country ham to oddball matches like pears and beets, and even cheese spreads with eggs atop, these swoon-worthy bites will entertain the entire family when you don’t feel like making a trip to the grocery store before suppertime. Here are several insights into the best toasts, along with tips and tricks on turning any leftovers into magic when seeking inspiration at home. If you’re familiar with a tartine, the smørrebrød is a Danish take on this concept and quite frankly, a perfect way to do toast. It goes like this: Pick a thick Danish-style rye bread, a spreadable fat (like butter or mayonnaise that acts as a food glue and laminate, keeping the bread from becoming soggy) and pile various protein and/or vegetables atop. Smorrebrods can be as simply as ham,

Swiss and arugula, but typically, since it is Scandinavian, you might also see a lot of smoked fish. Really, anything goes so play around with flavour profiles that your family loves. Another restaurant favourite is beautiful, bright toast is slathered with lemon ricotta and topped with charred peaches, crispy Country Ham and basil. At home you can griddle or toast any bread you have in the pantry until it’s nice and golden on one side, and in place of the homemade ricotta, you could take some cream cheese and whip it until it’s nice and smooth with a little lemon juice and

salt, and then top it off with thinly sliced peaches or plums or pitted cherries. Crispy bacon or ham adds that finishing touch. Family time meals often involve heaps of leftovers. And clearly, we’ve learned the best trick ever: leftovers of all sorts make for unique toast inventions. Scan the fridge before buying specifics. Toast, tartine, or bruschetta makes for the perfect vehicle for leftovers. If you have a protein, an herb/green/vegetable and a sauce you are ready to go. Toast and butter a baguette, melt your cheese of choice on top, and warm up and slice

leftover steak. Toss the steak with herbs or greens and build on top of the toast. Finish with salt and pepper, a good olive oil, lemon juice and maybe a drizzle of a creamy dressing.

Remember, Opposites Attract Creative thinking led many chefs to the idea of turning restaurant leftovers and seasonal fruit into a delicious, edible creations. Think homemade sourdough bread perfectly buttered and grilled, a layer of fresh, spreadable cheese (like fromage frais), poached beets, pears, a drizzle of honey, and salt and pepper. It's simple, delicious, and eliminates waste. Don’t be afraid to play around with interesting combinations that may seem like an oddball all, After pairing. watermelon, tomatoes and feta cheese are quite the satisfying situation. It all boils down to the balancing act of sweet, salty and acidic. Tomato toast is always a good idea,

especially when craving a quick and easy snack. And with Pan con tomate being a Spanish staple you’re probably already a convert. Try adding ricotta to act as a bridge between the toast and tomato, but most importantly, when it comes to a great tomato toast, the tomato should be star, so seek heirloom slicing tomatoes if possible. Because “overripe is way, way better than under ripe,” according to those in the know. Toast is a great way to looking not-so-glamorous utilise tomatoes in the kitchen that are extra juicy. Top off with sea salt and an aged sherry vinegar and be prepared to be wowed. Spreads and dips are an easy solution to turn a basic piece of toast into a culinary delight. Plus, if any tubs in the fridge are almost empty, it’s a great way to use every last drop. A few chef toasty favourites include fresh ricotta cheese (or Concasse tomato with chopped/crushed tomatoes), extra virgin olive oil and sliced boiled egg; foie gras mousse and pimento cheese and a smoked pepper ham spread. Add whatever herbs and vegetables are lying around for extra crunch and vibrancy. These types of toasts are also a great idea for entertaining spreads and can be cut up into smaller, two-bite pieces.

Chia seeds Chia seeds have officially transitioned from trendy to mainstream. You’ll find these tiny oval seeds stocked in regular supermarkets and incorporated into numerous products—from fruit drinks and energy bars to cereals and even tortilla chips. That's likely because chia seeds are nutrient powerhouses, and they offer some key health benefits. In addition to providing healthful fat, plant protein, and fiber, a one ounce portion of chia seeds packs nearly 20 percent of the daily target for calcium. An essential nutrient for healthy bones, calcium is needed for the proper functioning of muscles, blood vessels, nerves, enzymes, and hormones. Calcium plays a role in blood clotting, blood pressure, and maintaining normal heart rhythm and brain function. That same portion of chia seeds also has about a third of the daily goal for the minerals magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus. Magnesium helps improve mood and sleep, while manganese plays a role in collagen production and promotes skin and bone health. Phosphorus helps form cell structures and works with calcium to keep bones healthy. Once ounce of chia seeds also contains smaller amounts of B vitamins, potassium, and zinc. B vitamins help support energy production. Potassium helps

maintain heart function, healthy blood pressure, and muscle contractions; prevents muscle cramps; and helps maintain muscle mass. Zinc is required for a number of immune functions, in addition to healing and maintaining appetite. Of the 12 grams of carbohydrate in a one ounce portion of chia seeds, an impressive 10 grams come from fibre. That’s 40 percent of the daily minimum goal for this important nutrient. On top of supporting digestive health, chia fibre helps feed the healthy gut bacteria linked to immunity and positive mood. That fibre also protects against heart disease by reducing cholesterol and triglycerides (blood fats), increasing “good” HDL cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, and inhibiting blood clots. Speaking of heart disease, chia seeds are rich in a type of plantbased omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, tied to anti-inflammation and improved circulation. One study found that consuming 37 grams of chia seeds daily reduced a blood marker for inflammation by 40 percent. The anti-inflammatory effect also supports skin health, and it plays a further role in protecting the heart. The health-protective antioxidants found in chia seeds are known to defend against

oxidative stress. This is essentially an imbalance between the production of cell-damaging free radicals and the body's ability to counter their harmful effects. This protection helps fend off aging and protects the brain, as oxidative stress is a causative factor in diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Chia seeds support weight loss in a number of ways, including their impact on blood sugar and satiety, as noted above, as well as their anti-inflammatory effect. One of my favorite chia properties is the gel-like texture they produce when added to liquids, due to their ability to soak up about twelve times their weight in fluid. The thickness this adds to smoothies or juices has been shown to suppress hunger more than thinner versions of beverages with the same calorie levels.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT at least 15. I’d even take Arsenal’s midfield over what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to pick from.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Granted, Mr Ed tried to do something about United’s midfield by going after Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff. But he didn’t even get that right as United were interested in the wrong Longstaff brother.

Tired legs, eh Danny? Tired legs? Hamza Choudhury had been on the pitch three minutes when he chopped Mohamed Salah down around the shins at Anfield. Not that I care about the foul, more Match of the Day’s Danny Murphy and his utter disregard for doing the very basic level of research. I mean, even we do more fact-checking for this daft prose and trust me - we don’t check the facts. One thing that is obviously a fact is that the Premier League title race is over before Halloween (again). Liverpool lead Man City by eight points, so shall we just cancel the rest of it now? Or are we potentially missing out on seven or so months of Liverpool fans getting squeaky bums as they get near the actual finishing line? Equally, cancelling the rest of the

Mo Sala injured Premier League would probably deny the rest of us neutrals pointing and laughing at Spurs. And Arsenal. And, yes, United. This was definitely a weekend that will be remembered as a turning point if Liverpool do find enough bottle to win their first title in thirty years. With Mo Salah limping off due to the tackle mentioned above from Choudhury, it was left to Sadio Mane to assume the duties normally associated with the Egyptian. No, no not weaving past three players and planting it top bins. No, I mean falling over in the area after the gentlest of breathing in his vicinity. Football is a contact sport and you are allowed to make contact in the penalty area - it doesn’t immediately mean that the player who has felt some legal contact means he needs to go down as if entering the pool in Benidorm. As Brentan said afterwards, once it has been given it’s very hard for VAR to overrule it - but you know for sure that had it not been given then there is no way VAR are then deciding to give it. Leicester can feel pretty hard done by. The best bit of the match for me was King Klopp giving it the ‘behind the ears’ celebration to the Liverpool fans that were getting a little bit vocal with the shock that Liverpool might not make it eight wins from eight and extend that Premier League winning run to the 18 matches it now stands at (someone should probably check that fact for me, it might not be 18). Don’t forget, Kloppo also won a Champions League in there, so he did well to only put his hands behind his ears as an answer to those fools. Also, those rival fans getting excited that Jamie Vardy was going to rinse Dejan Lovren, called up for the match to teach young Joe Gomez a lesson for a very poor second half against Salzburg. That didn’t really happen now, did it? Liverpool getting an eight-pointlead after a mere eight matches isn’t all their own doing, though. No, Man City have been very willing accomplices, and their 2-0 defeat at the Etihad to Wolves was one of Pep’s own making.

When you are typically allowed to go and buy any player you want, it still seems somewhat curious that City didn’t cook the books enough to allow Peppy G to go out and procure another central defender - you know, just in case there was an injury crisis and they’d end up playing Fernandinho and Otamendi at the back. That, coupled with the fact he didn’t rate Adama Traore enough at Barcelona to give him a game meaning that Traore had a few points to finally be able to prove here, are the real reasons why City have suddenly fallen way off the pace - it’s either that or they were finding it too easy and want to make this Premier League defence a little more challenging, a bit like a handicap in golf I suppose. Still, #PepOut was trending on Twitter, so it makes me wonder whether City fans even deserve another title. As for Tottenham, well. After seeing seven go in against Bayern, you could assume that they might have wanted to put on a show at Brighton. Well, they certainly put on a show and I’ll let you insert your own adjective ahead of the word ‘show’. What you really need 90 seconds into the first game back on the horse is for your captain and keeper to throw one into the back of the net - genuinely, if I’d had the last week that Lloris has had, I’d have probably dislocated my own elbow just to get the hell out of there too. It’s a curious time at Spurs - them getting to a Champions League final has done a fine job of covering up the fact that they have been terrible for most of 2019. Losing away from home in the Premier League is not an uncommon thing for the Poch’s men at all. If nothing else, Palace fans must be wondering how on earth they managed to lose 4-0 to this lot. Take Eric Dier, for example. He was once considered one of the best English finds in years - intelligent and capable of moving between defence and midfield at will. Now, he looks like an average guy who has woken up in the middle of a Premier League field and there are lots of things passing him by. There was another black eye for Jan Vertonghen which will, no doubt, kick start another round of social media speculation around his similarities to John Terry, but even that could not overshadow the Premier League debut of Brighton’s Aaron Connelly. Given that

Gareth Southgate managed to pinch the last decent young Irish prospect to break through, he might do well to see what’s going on in Connelly’s heritage. Chelsea really are everything Manchester United should be right now. A young manager who is a legend of the club leading a team packed full of Academy graduates playing attacking football, the Blues are worryingly close to becoming the darlings of English football - and that just feels wrong, very very wrong. Sure, they are going to let in a few more daft goals between now and the end of the season but they are a team that should only improve as the season goes on. Mason Mount was pulling the strings and scoring the kind of goal that will have made his boss wonder if he was ever like that, and leading the line was Tammy Abraham who, one week at a time, is convincing me that he is more than a Championship bully. Southampton, though - well they are in proper trouble. You probably need someone other than Shane Long up top if you want to do semi-well in this league. As for United, they were turgid once again away at Newcastle - but given the levels of the two sides did we really expect much entertainment at St James’ Park. Sure, it was lovely to see the two Longstaff’s get a start together for the home side but they weren’t exactly going up against Premier League legends in Scott McTominay and Fred. See how many better midfield duos you can name playing this season - go on. I bet you can get to

Andre Gray

Solskjaer has spent a lot of time giving backroom roles to ex-players - right now, he’d do well to get some of them back on the pitch. There is no way that Carrick would be worse in midfield than Fred and I’d still back Ole himself to pose more of a threat down the middle than Marcus Rashford right now. The defeat means United head into the international break two points off the relegation zone. The sat nav is well and truly knackered on that bus Ole’s apparently at the wheel of. Arsenal were also bang average at the Emirates against Bournemouth. David Luiz headed home the only goal of the game within ten minutes, but Bournemouth did have one key chance to get level. Callum Wilson rounded the keeper but chose not to shoot - but why? The answer is easy - he’s been linked to Manchester United in January so he’s making the sensible decision to dial down his form a little. United will soon look elsewhere. Now, I am no opposition analyst but if I was working for Everton I reckon I’d have noticed that Burnley are pretty dangerous from set-pieces and that Everton are pretty rubbish at defending them. There was no great shock when Jeff Hendrick scored Burnley’s winner yes, from a corner. VAR actually did some giving rather than taking this weekend, and it happened at the Athletics Stadium. West Ham were peak West Ham against Crystal Palace. They went into the game allegedly in form, confident of pushing on. They came out of the game having gifted Uncle Roy his first away Premier League win against West Ham. Remember who you are West Ham, remember who you are. There’s some way to go yet before you can break into that top six. The only thing worth noting from Sheffield United’s visit to Watford was Andre Gray’s miss from three yards Quique Sanchez Flores instantly aged another three years.

What a difference a year makes rampant Monte crush Crevillente It really is only just a year since CD Montesinos began a season that saw them slide into the lower league and this was only their second game back in a campaign that some have suggested they are favourites to easily make a quick return to the higher division. At the outset, it looked very much like “men v boys” as the youthful Crevillente team took to the field, to face an obviously more experienced and physical Monte squad. Early exchanges were one-sided with Monte bossing both the midfield and defence as their opponents struggled to cope. Despite missing a clutch of early chances and some acrobatic keeping by the Crevillente goalie, Monte took the deserved lead through Maccan, who finished off a fine through ball from Manu at the back. More profligacy in front of goal and chances came and went, until Gonzalo made it two after a delightfully dinked pass from goalscorer Maccan. HT: Atletic Crevillente 0 – 2 CD Montesinos The second period saw no immediate changes to personnel or to Crevillente's lack of shape and tactical nous. It was only a matter of time before Monte added to their tally and midfield magician

German made it 3-0 with an unstoppable strike catching the keeper off his line. A rare mistake from a player who had honestly kept the numbers down to a respectable figure. Gonzalo added another before being substituted after a nasty collision with the opposition keeper. His four goals in two outings so far, suggest that Monte may have, at last, discovered a natural finisher. Time will tell, no doubt. A fifth goal from Alfredo put the seal on what could have been a double figures romp for Monte, but the honest truth is that they put this one to bed, without having to really try too hard. Crevillente offered very little and showed

a naivete that played to Monte's strengths. Monte will have far more difficult days at the coal face than this one, but, as the cliché goes, you can only play what is in front of you. Naoki Yamamoto to make F1 debut in Japanese Grand Prix practice Japan's Naoki Yamamoto will make his Formula 1 debut when he drives a Toro Rosso in first practice at his home grand prix on Friday. The 31-year-old reigning champion in Japan's Super Formula and Super GT series will drive Pierre Gasly's car. Frenchman Gasly will return alongside Daniil Kvyat for the rest of the weekend at Suzuka. Yamamoto is backed by Honda, Toro Rosso's engine partner and the owner of the Japanese circuit. In Super GT, he team-mates with 2009 Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button. Last year, the Briton said he thought Yamamoto was talented enough to be in F1. Yamamoto said driving an F1 car had been "a dream of mine since I was a kid", adding that he first watched them in action at Suzuka 27 years ago. "To get this chance at Suzuka - a very important circuit for all Japanese racing drivers - in front of such a big crowd of Japanese fans, will make the experience even more special," he said. "I have prepared as well as possible for this, spending time as part of the Toro Rosso team at several grand prix weekends, and I have also worked in the Red Bull simulator. "I want to enjoy the experience of driving an F1 car as much as possible and I will be trying my very best to get the most out of it." Katsuhide Moriyama, head of brand and communications at Honda, said: "We hope Naoki makes the most of this opportunity, that he learns from it and

that it helps him as a racing driver. "We also hope that seeing Yamamoto on track will serve as an inspiration to young Japanese drivers, so that in the near future we can once again have Japanese drivers competing in Formula 1." The senior Red Bull team, who also use Honda engines, have yet to confirm who will partner Max Verstappen next year, but motorsport adviser Helmut Marko has been quoted saying the seat is between Alexander Albon, who was promoted in place of Gasly in the

summer, and the Frenchman. Marko has also said Russian Kvyat will stay at Toro Rosso in 2020. Honda have been planning their engine usage in recent races to ensure all four of their cars are in the best possible competitive shape for the home grand prix. The race weekend faces the possibility of being affected by typhoon Hagibis, which is in the western Pacific Ocean and tracking towards Japan. Heavy rain and strong winds are projected for qualifying day on Saturday.

TOMATO CHUTNEY

Ingredients • 1kg ripe tomato peeled and chopped • 750g cooking apple, peeled, cored and chopped • 375g light muscovado sugar • 250g onion , chopped • 250g raisins • 1 green pepper, deseeded and chopped • 2 tsp salt ½ tsp ground ginger • 350ml cider vinegar

www.costablancapeople.com

VEGETABLE SOUP WITH CHEESY TOAST Ingredients • 1 leek , chopped quite small • 2 carrots , chopped quite small • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1 potato , chopped quite small • 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary • ½ tsp sugar • 410g can chickpea, drained and rinsed • 3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley • 2 x 400g cans chopped Italian tomato • 425ml/¾ pint vegetable stock

Method Put all the ingredients into a large pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved. Boil the mixture, uncovered, for about 45-50 mins until the fruit is tender and thickened. Cool, then transfer the mixture to a sterilised jar and seal.

For the toasts • 8 slices of baguette, cut on the diagonal • 1 garlic clove, cut in half • 50g edam, finely grated

Method 1. Put the vegetables into a large saucepan with the garlic, rosemary, stock and sugar. Season well, stir, bring to a simmer and cover. Cook gently for 15 minutes or until the vegetables are just tender. 2. Preheat the grill to high. Whizz the tomatoes in a food processor or blender until smooth, then tip into the vegetables with the chickpeas and parsley. Gently heat through, stirring now and then. 3. For the toasts: rub both sides of the bread with the garlic. Grill on one side until golden, turn the bread over, cover with edam and grill until it’s bubbling. Serve at once with the piping hot soup

Is eating beef healthy? The new fight in nutrition science A group of 14 researchers just set off a firestorm with a new series of studies that upends years of nutrition advice on meat. Their five systematic reviews, published recently in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, suggest there’s no health reason to eat less red meat - not even the bacon and salami we’ve been told for years to cut back on. Led by Dalhousie University epidemiologist Bradley Johnston, the authors, who hail from seven different countries, focused on the impact of red meat consumption on cancer, cardiovascular disease, and mortality, among other effects, as well as people’s values and preferences regarding red meat. Based on these studies, their conclusions - summarised in a new Annals clinical guideline - challenge the guidelines from just about every major national and international health group. Just four years ago, the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced that people should cut back on processed meats if they wanted to avoid certain types of cancer. The American Heart Association and the US government’s dietary guidelines panel have also long suggested curbing our meat consumption for better health. But the authors of the new studies argue that people can “continue their current consumption of both unprocessed red meat and processed meat,” meaning whatever amount they’re

currently eating. That’s because the health impact of cutting back is either nonexistent or small, and the evidence of any harms is so weak, that it’d be

misleading to suggest people should avoid meat for health reasons. Importantly, the studies did not investigate non-health reasons for eschewing beef and bacon - including animal welfare and meat production’s harmful impact on the environment - and the science backing the environmental case remains stronger than ever. But what’s really interesting about this new series is the argument that previously published guidelines have been, well, bad science. “These papers provide a nice counterbalance to the current norm in

nutritional epidemiology where scientists with strong advocacy tend to overstate their findings and ask for major public health overhauls even though the evidence is weak,” said Stanford meta-researcher John Ioannidis, a long-time critic of nutrition science who was not involved in the research. So it comes as no surprise that already, the Annals series has prompted a fierce blowback from various groups who’ve long argued that red and processed meat consumption should be curbed. The American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and a slew of other researchers objected to the series. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine - a group that’s long endorsed a plant-based diet - filed a petition with the Federal Trade Commission in response to the studies, asking the agency to “correct false statements” contained in the report, which they deemed a “major disservice to public health.” So how did the authors of the new studies come to a wildly different conclusion? It’s less a story about whether or not one should eat meat and more about how nutrition recommendations are - or should be - made. Why the study authors determined eating red meat is fine for health In the past, many of the groups that

have set guidelines for whether or not humans should cut back on optimal health considered a very broad range of research, from randomized trials to animal evidence, as well as case-control studies, a relatively weak type of observational research. (Here’s more on different types of study designs.) As you may have guessed, there are all kinds of problems with these kinds of study designs. Models based on animal studies don’t always bear out in humans. Case-control studies are not the most reliable, either: Researchers start with an endpoint (for example, people who already have cancer). For each person with a disease (a case), they find a match (a control) - or someone who doesn’t have the disease. They then look backward in time and try to determine if any patterns of exposure (in this case, eating meat) differed in those with cancer compared to those who don’t have cancer.

Factors But since meat eaters differ so fundamentally from non-meat-eaters, the

reasons the two groups have varying health outcomes could have nothing to do with meat. Researchers try to control for these “confounding factors,” but they can’t capture all of them. Some past reports on meat eating have also factored in the environmental and social effects of gobbling up steaks and bacon. The five Annals papers did something different: They looked only at the health effects of processed and unprocessed red meat. Processed red meats — everything from hotdogs and bacon, to lunch meats - are transformed by salting, curing, or fermentation. Unprocessed meats include beef, veal, pork, lamb, and venison. The papers were also systematic reviews and meta analyses, or syntheses of the research evidence that bring together a bunch of studies with the goal of coming to more fully supported conclusions. And the researchers used a very strict definition of what constituted reliable evidence for inclusion in their reviews.

The 3 main types of ovarian cancer Ovarian cancer is an especially scary disease. Unlike many other cancers, the symptoms of ovarian cancer—among them pelvic pain, frequent urination, and bloating—tend to be vague. By the time a woman suspects something is wrong and visits her doctor, the cancer is often in a late, less curable stage. In fact, only 20 percent of ovarian cancers are discovered in the earliest stages. This year, the National Cancer Institute predicts that 22,530 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed. Yet only 47.6 percent of women with the disease are alive five years after diagnosis; 13,980 are expected to die of the disease by the end of 2019. No wonder ovarian cancer has been dubbed the "silent killer." Ovarian cancer isn't just one disease, however. There are more than 30 subtypes, and those subtypes are grouped under three main ovarian cancer types. Ovaries are composed of many different types of cells, each which can transform and become cancerous. Here's what all women need to know about the three main types of ovarian cancer—and what makes them different from one another. Epithelial ovarian cancer Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most common type of ovarian cancer, comprising up to 90 percent of all ovarian cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). It starts in the epithelial cells that line the outer surface of the ovaries. The cells here turn over and regenerate so frequently, and that can lead to a higher rate of error in the way they divide, which adds to the propensity for something to

go wrong and potentially form a cancer. Epithelial ovarian cancer also includes cancers that arise from the fallopian tubes and the lining of the abdomen and pelvis, known as the peritoneum. The most common subtype of this type of ovarian cancer is high-grade serious carcinoma, and is believed to start in one of the fallopian tubes. Germ cell ovarian cancer Germ cell ovarian cancer cases make up less than 2 percent of all ovarian cancer diagnoses, according to the ACS. In the simplest of terms, germ cells are the cells that form eggs. This type of ovarian cancer often affects just one ovary. It primarily strikes women under 30. More than 9 out of 10 women diagnosed with this form survive at least 5 years after being diagnosed. The most common subtype of germ cell ovarian cancer is a dysgerminoma, which tends to grow slowly. Another type is called a grade 1 immature teratoma, which is mostly benign with just a few spots of cancer. Stromal ovarian cancer Stromal cells are support cells; these cells form the connective tissue that hold each ovary together. Stromal cells also produce estrogen and progesterone. Like germ cell tumors, stromal tumors (also known as sex cord-stromal tumors) are rare. Just 1 percent of all ovarian cancer cases are stromal ovarian cancer, and more than half of all cases are discovered in women in age 50. Still, about 5 percent of cases are found in young girls. Some stromal cell tumors, such as fibromas, are usually benign.

Others, like a subtype called granulosa cell tumors, are more likely to be malignant. Because stromal tumors are hormonally active, abnormal vaginal bleeding is often a symptom. Symptoms of each type of ovarian cancer For the most part, the symptoms are the same for all three main types of ovarian cancer, and they can be frustratingly hard to detect early on. They can be so non-specific that women overlook them. According to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, the most common symptoms include bloating, belly or abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, an urgent need to pee, exhaustion, back pain, pain during sex, nausea, heartburn, constipation, and changes in your period. If you have any of these symptoms for more than 2 weeks, have them checked

out by your primary care doctor. If she suspects there's a possibility you might have ovarian cancer, you’ll be referred to a gynecological oncologist. How to lower your ovarian cancer risk Despite all this scary-sounding info, ovarian cancer is quite rare, effecting only about 1 percent of the population. Your genes are a risk factor, so take a look at your family’s medical history. Finding out if any first-degree relatives (like your mom and siblings) have a history of cancer is a good start, but don’t stop there. Your entire family history is

important. Sometimes there’s a scenario where a generation is skipped. If you do have a strong family history of breast and ovarian cancer, talk to your doctor. She may recommend that you see a genetic counsellor. Another thing you can do to stay healthy? Stop putting off your yearly check-up. While you may dread pelvic exams, it’s a good way for your doctor to check the health of your ovaries. In the meantime, lead a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise.

AntiAging Serums for Any Skin Type While no magic product exists to instantly make you look or feel younger, a good anti-aging serum is about as close as you’ll get to a fountain of youth for your skin. These highly-concentrated formulas call on a variety of key ingredients to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, even skin tone, repair environmental damage, brighten your complexion, and reduce inflammation. It’s no wonder dermatologists constantly recommend these multi-tasking skincare agents. Serums are more concentrated. That’s what basically makes them more effective than a regular cream or moisturiser. Finding the best anti-aging serums on the market comes down to knowing which ingredients to look for/so we tapped three dermatologists to learn more. They all agreed that retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid are the trifecta of effective anti-aging ingredients/but they also had a few lesser-known suggestions. While there are a myriad of ingredients out there that promise anti-aging benefits, experts recommend sticking to those that have the most scientific evidence behind them. Look for [options] such a bakuchiol or retinol that stimulate youthful

collagen and elastin, or those that protect against premature aging, such as vitamin C and E. In addition to these powerful components, experts also suggest hyaluronic acid for dryness, soothing botanicals for redness, and hydroxy acids (like glycolic acid) to address a loss of radiance. If you’re looking to tackle dehydration or puffiness experts point towards squalane and caffeine. Squalane is extremely moisturising and keeps skin hydrated because its molecular makeup is similar to the skin’s cell membrane, which allows the plant-based ingredient to quickly absorb into the skin. As for depuffing the skin, caffeine constricts blood vessels, which decreases puffiness. Armed with this vital information, you’re ready to choose your new favourite skincare product to combat wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging. Here, the 15 best anti-aging serums/made with powerful, dermatologist-trusted ingredients—for younger and brighter skin.

More celebs are using energy healing In the past few years, the field of energy healing has pretty much exploded—but there’s a ton of confusion around it, too. What is it, exactly? Are there credible studies on it? And isn’t it just a little bit...woo-woo? Energy medicine (or biofield therapies) is the act of channelling and manipulating the energy that courses through your body in order to heal it. This can be done with hands-on practices, such as acupuncture and Reiki, as well as sensory-based experiences, like the use of crystals, sound baths, and aromatherapy. Once derided as too mystical, energy medicine is becoming more common—trendy, even. Adele reportedly said that she performs better when she holds crystals. Kim Kardashian West visited a local energy healer while on vacation in Bali. And some elite athletes in the NFL and NBA now bring Reiki masters on the road. Increasingly, scientists are starting to take energy medicine seriously too. The medical theory Energy practitioners believe that your

body is instilled with a subtle energy, or animating life force, the flow of which must be balanced for good health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this force is called Qi or Chi(pronounced “chee”); in Ayurvedic medicine, which originated in India, it’s represented in the doshas, three energies (vata, pitta, and kapha) that provide every person’s makeup. The

basis of energy medicine is removing blocks in your body’s energetic field that can cause poor health. Energy medicine has been around for thousands of years—a description of the “laying on of hands” to relieve pain

was found in an ancient Egyptian papyrus document from 1550 BC. But even with its long history, people find it hard to wrap their heads around energy medicine, This is not helped by the fact that this field is open to ‘quackery’. Anyone can basically call him- or herself an energy healer. While practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine are licensed and do either a four-year masters or a five-year doctorate, there are no minimum standards for most other types of energy work. Energy is the foundation for everything we do with our bodies. The idea is that we have this bank of energy, and we have to restore it or replace it. In Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, if the energy isn’t flowing well, we get sick. Gathering evidence These days, it seems like everyone in the wellness world is heading into the mystic. But it’s not just trendy spirit warriors who have energy healers on speed dial—some of the worlds best hospitals are hiring them too. Some forms of energy medicine are backed by research. Acupuncture, for example, is supported by solid studies. And a 2010 review of research in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine found strong evidence that biofield therapies, such as Reiki and therapeutic touch, can alleviate pain, and moderate evidence that they could reduce anxiety in hospitalised patients. Yet for many energy therapies, scientific evidence is still lagging. But as demand grows, more studies are being commissioned. In its most recent strategic plan, the US National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health deemed “nonpharmacologic management of pain” a top scientific priority.

What are hot flushes Hot flushes are practically synonymous with menopause—but, despite most people being aware of their existence, many don't know what, exactly, hot flushes are. While not every women experiences hot flushes during menopause, those that have (and do) are well aware that the experience is pretty miserable. Sufferers describe being in situations where they need to excuse themselves because of the profuse sweating they are experiencing. So, the basic understanding here is that hot flushes make you feel...hot—but here’s what else you need to know about the common phenomenon, why it happens, and what you can do to cool off in the moment. What are hot flushes? Hot flashes are a disturbance in your body’s thermoregulatory system, i.e. the process that allows your body to maintain its core temperature. During menopause, the thermostat gets shifted so that women are increasingly sensitive to small changes in temperature. Their body overreacts to try to cool them off by dispersing heat and sweating. The process happens to everyone when their bodies are trying to get rid of heat, but it happens in a much more magnified sense in these hot flushes. What causes hot flushes? The exact reason why hot flushes happen during menopause isn’t clear. But it’s thought that the decrease in your body’s production of reproductive hormones, including estrogen, during

menopause can make you more sensitive to slight changes in body temperature. The estrogen hormones fluctuate and, although the total estrogen levels may not be low, there are moments where estrogen levels fall relative to where they were. This then triggers a change in your blood vessels, which can make you feel hot and sweaty. While you can just have a hot flush for seemingly no reason, hot flushes can be

exacerbated by things like sugar, stress, spicy foods, and alcohol. When you have a hot flash during the night, it’s often referred to as night sweats. But these are essentially the same. Night sweats tend to wake women up and can make it tough to sleep. What does a hot flash feel like? Hot flushes can feel different for everyone. Some women have “horrible” hot flushes, while others don’t have any and it’s unclear why it affects people so

differently. Some women experience a hot flush from the bottom, up and some women experience their hot flash from the top, down. Some women feel as if they were sitting in an oven and feel red and flushed for no apparent reason. The aftermath of a hot flash doesn’t feel great either. When women lose heat from the hot flash, they then can shiver—it’s not a very pleasant sensation. Are there any treatments for hot flushes? There are a slew of treatment options, from medication to lifestyle changes, that can help. Low doses of estrogen, especially when menopausal symptoms first start, can be a lifesaver for women experiencing hot flashes. Experts also recommend limiting sugar, spicy foods, and alcohol, since these can make hot flashes worse. If you have intense hot flushes, a supplement called Siberian Rhubarb can be effective (just talk to your doctor before trying any new kind of supplement). Dressing in layers that you can remove during a hot flush, carrying a portable fan, and maintaining a healthy body weight can also help, according to the National Institute on Aging (NIA). Overall, if you’re experiencing hot flashes and it bothers you, talk to your doctor. They should be able to help guide you on next steps.

An extra half glass of fruit juice a day 'could sharply increase diabetes risk' Drinking an extra half a glass of fruit juice a day could increase the risk of diabetes by 15 per cent, research by Harvard University suggests. The study of more than 190,000 men and women found all types of sugary soft drink were linked to a raised chance of developing type two diabetes. But fruit juice appeared to carry significantly higher risks than drinks with added sugar, which appeared to increase the chance of diabetes by 9 per cent. The research is the first to look at whether long-term changes in drinking soft drinks are linked with type 2 diabetes. Overall, a small increase in consumption of any type of sugary drink was linked to a 16 per cent higher diabetes risk over four years. The study found that swapping such drinks for diet sodas or artificially sweetened drinks did not appear to lessen the risk. However experts expressed caution about this finding, saying it was possible that those at high risk of diabetes might be likely to be turning to diet alternatives after years drinking sugary drinks. The study looked at more than 20 years' worth of data from more than 192,000 men and women participating in long-term studies. The study, published in the journal Diabetes Care, found increasing total sugary drink intake by just four ounces a day over a four-year period was associated with 16 per cent higher

diabetes risk in the following four years. If participants replaced one daily sugary drink with water, coffee or tea - and not a diet soda - was linked with two per cent to 10 per cent lower risk of diabetes. Study senior author Professor Frank Hu said: "The study results are in line with current recommendations to replace sugary beverages with noncaloric beverages free of artificial sweeteners. "Although fruit juices contain some nutrients, their consumption should be moderated." Study lead author Dr JeanPhilippe Drouin-Chartier, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, said: "The study provides further evidence

demonstrating the health benefits associated with decreasing sugary beverage consumption and replacing these drinks with healthier alternatives like water, coffee, or tea." Gavin Partington, director general of the British Soft Drinks Association said: “This study does not prove any relationship between contracting diabetes and the consumption of soft drinks. The fact is all age groups in the UK are falling short on their 5 A Day consumption of fruit and vegetables. Therefore, deterring people from consuming a small 150ml portion of pure fruit juice – which counts as one of your 5 A Day – risks people foregoing the vitamin and phytonutrient benefits of fruit juice.”

Technology

WhatsApp tests self destructing messages WhatsApp is developing a new feature that would allow you to set your messages to self-destruct after a set period of time. The new “disappearing messages” feature first appeared in version 2.19.275 of the Android app, but WABetaInfo, who first discovered the feature, notes that it might not be available to everyone on the beta just yet. Disappearing messages could be useful to anyone who needs to send a sensitive piece of information that they don’t want to be permanently available. We’ve previously seen the feature used by the messaging app Telegram, which lets you send self-destructing messages using the app’s Secret Chats feature. Gmail also added a similar feature in its redesign last year. Currently, WhatsApp’s implementation of the feature looks a lot more basic, although WABetaInfo notes that it’s currently early in development and is likely to be subject to change. In its current form, WhatsApp lets you set messages to delete after either 5 seconds or an hour (there’s no in-between), and the feature also only appears to be available in group chats, where you have to commit to having every message sent in the chat deleted after a set period of time. WABetaInfo doesn’t have any details on when the feature might be available for everyone, or what capabilities it will eventually have. But the promise of a little bit more security in the world’s most popular messaging app is no bad thing.

Alien 'lurkers' could be watching us They're called 'lurkers', and they may have been covertly surveilling us from space for millions of years – since before we even existed, perhaps. That's the bold proposal being made in a new scientific paper by American physicist James Benford. But even though Benford's ideas sound radical, they draw upon a long history of conjecture in the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) community. In 1960, Stanford radiophysicist Ronald Bracewell first suggested the idea that "superior galactic communities" could disperse autonomous interstellar probes as "hypothetical feelers" throughout space in order to observe, monitor, and maybe even communicate with other life-forms, including those on Earth. "A probe located nearby could bide its time while our civilisation developed technology that could find it, and, once contacted, could undertake a conversation in real time," Benford explains in his new paper. "Meanwhile, it could have been routinely reporting back on our biosphere and civilisation for long eras." But while this decades-old concept of Bracewell probes has been explored in subsequent research and embraced by science fiction – most notably as the eerie monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey – there's never been any evidence for the existence of such robotic sentinels. Now, Benford has proposed the ideal place where alien-made 'lurkers' could be present in our Solar System, stationed to

observe in ever-watchful silence. In his new paper, the physicist says such hidden, long-lived robotic lurkers would do well to set up their stakeout on a class of rocky near-Earth objects (NEO) called co-orbital objects. Like their name suggests, these quasisatellites of Earth perform orbital loops around the Sun that are similar to Earth's own orbital pattern, and they do it in close proximity to Earth, being

but never ventures very far away as we both go around the Sun," NASA NEO researcher Paul Chodas explained in 2016. "In effect, this small asteroid is caught in a little dance with Earth." But co-orbital objects could turn out to be much more than Earth's dancing partners, Benford suggests. Due to their constant orbital proximity, these nearby space rocks might offer an optimal

gravitationally bound to our own planet in addition to the Sun. Only a small number of such objects has ever been found by astronomers. The closest known one to Earth, called 2016 HO3, is a small asteroid described by NASA as "Earth's constant companion". "2016 HO3 loops around our planet,

vantage point for robotic probes seeking to keep tabs on us. "These near-Earth objects provide an ideal way to watch our world from a secure natural object," his paper explains. "That provides resources an ETI might need: materials, a firm anchor, and concealment."

Because of this possibility – and the fact that co-orbitals are indeed so close to Earth – the physicist argues investigating them should be a priority for SETI astronomers. "We should move forthrightly toward observing them, both by observing them in the electromagnetic spectrum and planetary radar, as well as visiting them with probes," Benford writes. Alien search Aside from the prospect of finding alien sentinels, it's a case that could make sense for other scientific reasons too – especially since we know so little about co-orbital objects, with less than 20 ever having been discovered. As it happens, Benford may actually get his wish sooner rather than later. China has already announced plans to launch an ambitious 10-year mission that would include visiting and collecting samples from 2016 HO3: a perfect opportunity to see up close if there's anything funny (or alien-y) about Earth's constant companion. Not that others in the SETI community necessarily expect we'll find evidence of a grand alien technosignature. "How likely is it that [an] alien probe would be on one of these coorbitals? Obviously, extremely unlikely," theoretical physicist and astrobiologist Paul Davies from Arizona State University, who wasn't involved with Benford's research, told Live Science. "But if it costs very little to go take a look, why not? Even if we don't find E.T., we might find something of interest."

Tyre checks we can all do

Why EU motoring bodies are lobbying against a nodeal Brexit

October is TYRE SAFETY MONTH, when we focus our attention on preparing one of the most safety-critical elements of the car prepared for the seasonal change. Tyres are worn through normal use, must withstand heat and cold and are

The European Union’s major motoring bodies have united in an “unprecedented condemnation” of a no-deal Brexit and the impact it would have on the automotive industry. A joint statement from the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) and 21 other automotive organisations warns that consumers may bear the brunt of extra yearly costs totalling £5bn if higher export tariffs are introduced post-Brexit, Auto Express reports. The industry said that it fears “catastrophic” and “irreversible” damage will be caused if Britain leaves the EU without a deal next month, the motoring magazine said. SMMT chief Mike Hawes said the European car sector is “deeply integrated”, where “free and frictionless trade” has helped the industry become one of the continent’s “most valuable assets”. The warning comes after repeated promises from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to bring the UK out of the EU on 31 October “with or without a trade deal with Brussels”, The Guardian reports. How will a ‘no-deal’ Brexit impact the industry? The paramount issue outlined by the motoring bodies centres around frictionless trade. Currently, car manufacturers are able to quickly and freely move parts between the UK and mainland Europe. The Daily Telegraph says that companies operating in the UK rely on “highly tuned supply chains” that import parts on a “‘just-in-time’ basis”. Some 1,100 trucks arrive from mainland Europe every day carrying “components to feed automotive

often bashed by potholes and kerbs, it is no real surprise that they can become easily damaged. It is for that reason that we must educate ourselves to pay more attention to our tyres, so that we can get the best out of them, and the safest driving experience possible. It is important that our tyres have enough tread to enable them to maintain contact with the road surface in any weather conditions. The grooves in the tyres are used to displace surface content to ensure the tyres grip the road, and so it is only if there is enough of a gap for that surface material, water for example, to go into that the tyres remain efficient. The minimum tread depth of a tyre is 1.6 millimetres across the central ¾ of

the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing at 3 millimetres. At 1.6 millimetres in wet weather it takes an extra two car lengths (8 metres) to stop at 50 mph than if your tread was 3 millimetres. Over or under inflated tyres will cause uneven wear and so the tread might also be uneven, possibly deeper on one side than the other. We can and should check the tyres on a regular basis to ensure that they are at their optimum inflation and with consistent tread. We need to get close to the tyre and look at each one of them separately. Firstly, we can feel around each tyre with our hands, including the sides, feeling for anything that doesn´t seem correct, such as bubbling or even items protruding from the tyre. It is possible for example for a tyre to contain a nail, but the nail is plugging the hole it has made

and so deflation can be very slow, despite this potentially dangerous situation. As we look around each tyre, we should also check the tread. If the tyre is under inflated, then there may be more wear towards he edges of the tyres. If a tyre is over inflated there could be more wear in the centre. As we work our way around the tyre, we should also look within the tread pattern for ridges between the tread. These are called the Principle Grooves and are indicators of tyre wear. We should check each tyre individually, including the spare, to make sure that the tread wear is consistent. We should also check the tyre pressure, although we may have to go to a local service station to do this with a calibrated machine. Most modern vehicles have a plate stuck to them, often on or near the door, which indicated the optimum pressure under normal driving conditions. If not, you might have to check your manual. You should always check tyre pressure when they are cold.

factories”, the newspaper says. Any disruption to the supply line could wreak havoc on a company’s operation. The joint statement from the 23 motoring organisations warns that a no-deal Brexit may lead to greater border checks, harming the just-in-time “operating model”, as well as the introduction of higher World Trade Organization (WTO) tariffs that could add £5bn per year to exports leaving the UK for the EU, Autocar reports. What do the motoring organisations say? Given that Britain’s motoring sector is “largely foreign-owned”, the Guardian says, the European motoring bodies fear that a hard Brexit will have a significant impact on both manufacturing and the consumer. “Barrier-free trade is crucial for the continued success of the deeply integrated European auto industry, which operates some 230 assembly and production plants right across the EU,” said ACEA secretary general Erik Jonnaert. “Brexit will have a significant negative impact on the automotive sector and a ‘no deal’ Brexit would greatly exacerbate those consequences, causing massive disruptions to an industry which is so vital to Europe’s economy,” he added. Meanwhile, Gianmarco Giorda, director at Italy’s Associazione Nazionale Filiera Industria Automobilistica (ANFIA), claims that higher tariffs will drive up vehicle costs, impacting both customers in the UK and in mainland Europe. A deal would, therefore, help “drive future innovation, benefitting consumers, societies and economies right across Europe”, she said. “With so much at stake, it is in the interest of all parties to avoid a ‘no deal’ Brexit and deliver a managed withdrawal of the UK from the EU.”

Wet Weather Tips Weather conditions pose the biggest risk to road users, partly due to the inexperience and lack of preparedness by drivers, and partly due to the changing dynamics of the road and driving environment. In our area of Spain, we are blessed with an abundance of sunshine throughout most of the year, so when it does rain it is a situation we are not used to.So, although we have had the usual September rains, in preparation for autumn showers and winter downpours, here are our top tips for dealing with rain. Slow down It might seem like the most obvious thing to say, but all too often it is advice that is ignored. It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security within our vehicles, but speed and adverse weather is a deadly combination. When the road is wet, your vehicle´s tyres cannot grip the road as much as in normal, dry conditions. Cornering and braking are all affected by water on the road, reducing grip and increasing stopping distances considerably, therefore, slowing down allows more time to adapt and deal with the situation. Ease off the accelerator a little and you will see the difference immediately. Avoid violent movements or sharp braking Sudden braking, acceleration or harsh movements of the steering wheel may result in loss of vehicle control. If the operations are carried out progressively, smoothly and slowly, it also gives other drivers more time to react. Remember that a smooth drive is a safer and more efficient ride under normal conditions and even more so when it rains.

Avoid driving on road markings Road markings including lane lines, crossings and markers provide less grip that the road surface and can therefore increase braking distances. Riders on two wheels should be particularly aware of this problem. Be seen During rain or reduced visibility make sure that you have your lights on. Daytime Running Lights may not be enough, especially during reduced visibility where headlights must be used. The timely use of indicators, including brake lights, is crucial to give other road users advanced warnings of your intentions. Keeping your vehicle under control and following all the advice for a smooth ride will also allow for an improvement in your visibility to other road users. Avoid aquaplaning risks Keep a sharp lookout for puddles and pools of water which may reduce the grip

of your tyres on the road even more, potentially creating a liquid barrier between the tyre and road surface, commonly referred to as aquaplaning. However, don´t carry out any sudden movements to avoid these puddles, simply slow down, hold the steering wheel firmly and try to keep your vehicle on a straight and level course. Whilst maintaining an adequate distance from the vehicle in front, it is often beneficial to follow vehicles through such areas as the displacement of water becomes easier. With these five basic tips your journey through the rain should be a much safer one but remember that it is not only about how you drive your vehicle, but about the vehicle itself. Proper maintenance is crucial, checking tyres and their pressure, lights, windows, brakes and other such features on a regular basis should also reduce the risk. If in doubt, your local garage can keep a check on these for you.

Car technology changes While the look and feel of our cars has changed in the past 100 years, the way we drive them hasn’t. But fundamental change is coming. In the next decade, not only will the way they’re powered and wired have shifted dramatically, but we won’t be the ones driving them anymore. Some cars already have basic automation features, but the automotive experiments being undertaken by the likes of Uber and Google make up a minuscule proportion of the vehicles on our roads. By 2030, the standard car will evolve from merely assisting the driver to taking full control of all aspects of driving in most driving conditions. This widespread automation, together with the electrification and increased connectivity of both the car and society, are set to shake up the car industry in a big way, affecting everything from the way cars look and feel, to how we spend our time inside them, and how they get us from A to B.

A very different driving

experience From the outside, the large air intakes and front grills that cool our combustion engines will no longer be needed, while wing mirrors will be replaced with cameras and sensors. Windows could be larger to allow liberated passengers to enjoy the view, or near non-existent to provide privacy. The Mercedes-Benz Vision Urbanetic demonstrates these radical new looks with a modular vehicle that can switch bodies to either move cargo or people. Car interiors will be much more flexible, some allowing customisation of colour, light, privacy, and layout at the touch of a button. Volvo’s recent 360c concept car envisages a multifunctional space that can transform into a lounge, an office and even a bedroom. Sun visors will become a thing of the past, with smart glass allowing us to control the amount of entering daylight. The Mercedes F015 doors even have extra screens that can function as windows or entertainment systems.

Many cars will be fitted with augmented-reality systems, which will superimpose computer-generated visualisations on to the windscreen or other suitable display areas, to ease the passenger’s nerves from relinquishing the wheel by showing what the car is about to do. Drivers will be able to communicate with their cars through speech or gesture commands. In high-end models, we may even see some early versions of brain-computer interfaces, which would associate patterns of brain activity with commands to control the car or entertain occupants. Similar technology has already been used to control prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs.
