Speed cameras working overtime S

peed cameras in the Alicante province are working overtime to catch drivers breaking the limit with as many as 254 fines being issued per day to drivers in the area. The

number of penalties being issued to drivers has shot up by 12% in the first eight months of the year in comparison to 2018. Figures released this week have indicated that the daily average of drivers fined for speeding in the province is on the increase and now averages at 254 per day. According to

data gathered by the Provincial Headquarters of Traffic of Alicante, between January and August of this year 61,701 sanctions have been filed for speeding, two thirds of them in fixed speed cameras and the rest through mobile speed controls. Over the first eight months of the year, a speeding driver has been caught in the act every

five and a half minutes. Authorities have attributed the increase in large part to the number of fixed speed camera points in operation in the Alicante province. Mobile radar fines have also increased – when officers stop and fine a driver caught in the act there and then. Mobile speed camera fines have increased from 11,120 in the first eight Continued on page 6

Dolón met with Victor García in order to discuss the needs and demands of Torrevieja’s educational community such as the urgent need for the construction of the Amanecer infant school which still runs in prefabricated classrooms. In addition, the mayor was keen to address the need for repairs and improvements needed for many of the town’s schools. García has assured the mayor that the Valencian Government will study the needs of the town’s schools and plans, at the pair’s next meeting, to pay a visit to the schools in person.

Ramón López Cabrera, Councillor for the beaches said that “it has been chosen, as usual, the beach of La Caleta in Cabo Roig because it is the most suitable to the program and to carry out various activities, it is the one that supports more users in winter and also has the beach bar service open throughout the year .” Every Sunday from 9:30am visitors can practice paddle boarding, surfing, canoeing, aerobic activities (aerobics, yoga, body balance) and all without worrying about the youngsters in the house because children's workshops

have been prepared for them during the day to help keep them entertained and occupied. On Saturday, 19th and 26th October and the 2nd and 9th November the “diving baptism” has been scheduled to help people discover diving and the marine environment of the coast firsthand and help locals to contemplated the benefits of nature. Mar Ezcurra Councillor for Youth explained that “the activities are free and will be reported every week through the facebook page of the Department of Beaches and Youth. The posts will include a calendar and the corresponding activities for the relevant day. These activities take advantage of the good climate in our area, enhance leisure and family time on weekends on the Oriolan coast and also aim to educate in conservation, respect for and protection of the environment”.

Bigger and better Orihuela tapas route Orihuela’s Councillor for Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, has presented the tapas and gintonics of the establishments that are taking part in this years’ VII edition of the Tapa Route and the Gin-Tonic contest. The unveiling took place at the María Moliner Municipal Library ahead of the actual event, which will take place from Thursday, 31st October to Sunday 3rd November. Councillor Rocamora highlighted the increase in participation compared to last year, which sees at least 25 percent more bars and restaurants taking part. This year there are four categories: a traditional tapas,

gourmet tapas, sweet tapas and a gin and tonic, “this shows the consolidation of such an important event for our municipality, where we value the gastronomy and attract more people to our doors taking advantage of the fact that it is a holiday period.” During the presentation of the tapas the Councillor was accompanied by the sponsors, with the representatives of the entities of Onda Cero, Caja Rural, Central Hisumer, Conservas Victoria and Mateo Wines. All local companies that promote this initiative that help boost the tourism sector and the “promotion of all participating catering companies”, this time 40

percent of those taking part are newly opened establishments that have taken advantage of this route to make themselves known in the town. This year the price of tapas plus drinks for traditional and gourmet is 2.50 euros, in the case of sweet cover, the price will be one euro and in gin-tonics each establishment will continue to set the price. The Councillor of Tourism recalled that in addition to the awards in the four categories, the voters of the Rutappa application will also have a prize up for grabs, so it has encouraged residents and tourists to take part, making this route “focused for all tastes and palates”.

Monument to the Guardia Civil A monument to the Guardia Civil was dedicated on Sunday at Torreviejas Vista Alegre promenade. The inauguration of the monument was part of a series of celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of the creation of the Guardia Civil and was presided over by the Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón and Brigadier General Head of the Valencia Zone, José Hermida Blanco. The day began with an official ceremony, flag raising and playing of the national anthem. The mayor thanked the work carried out by the Guardia Civil in defence of all citizens and congratulated those present on the occasion of its 175th anniversary. A solemn pause was taken to pay homage to those Guardia Civil who lost their lives in the line of duty before the Anthem of the Guardia Civil was played.

A worker who suffered a bad fall in an industrial building in Orihuela was airlifted to hospital. The 59 year old man was rushed to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia after he fell from a height of several metres in an industrial building just off the N340 in Orihuela. The incident occurred on Friday morning just after 11.30am. A SAMU ambulance unit was dispatched and a medical helicopter was called for to transport the man to hospital.

70 year old swimmer rescued in Torrevieja Emergency services were called upon to rescue and revive a 70 year old swimmer who got into difficulty in Torrevieja on Friday. The woman had been swimming in the sea just off the shore at the town’s promenade on Friday afternoon and at around 1pm, emergency services were called to the scene. Much-needed upgrade

table will expand the purification capacity of the Orihuela Costa pumping station with the construction of a storage tank to absorb the overflow and rainwater so that the treatment plant is not saturated and also to improve the treatment processes and the renovation of five wastewater pumping stations and their discharge pipes. The EPSAR project also guarantees to the City Council of Orihuela that the annual balance of flows generated by the treatment plant will not be reduced, keeping capacity for users at the current level. The amount of the investment would be 5,506,703.33 euros without VAT.

Alicante mother betting shop

sues

An Alicante mother has brought a betting shop to court for allowing her 14 year old son to place bets. The woman is taking the betting shop to court for not fulfilling its responsibilities by allowing minors access to its facilities – a practice prohibited by law. The woman also claims that the betting shop is actively enticing teenagers in by offering cheap soft drinks, sometimes for just 50c each. Although the woman could not prove whether or not her son had been allowed to place a bet while on the premises, she does not want the bookmakers to go unpunished for allowing minors in. The woman first reported the incident to the police, who told her they didn’t govern such complaints and claims she was sent from pillar to post before finally, writing a letter of complaint to the Department of Treasury which legislates gambling and gaming machines. Not content with just writing a letter, the woman brought the issue to the Alicante court claiming that it is outrageous that betting shops are being allowed to turn a blind eye to the entry of minors when all data is showing that gambling is becoming a growing problem among our young people. She said, “These shops have everything designed to attract young people – cheap soft drinks and even the possibility to place a bet at one euro.”

Continued from page 1 months of 2018 to 12,006 fines this year between January and August. It might be said that in this increase in the overall number of speeding fines being issued has had something to do with the decrease of the maximum speed limit on conventional roads from 100 to 90 kilometers per hour, effective since last January. However, the Provincial Traffic Headquarters itself denies these claims, saying that the majority of fines generated by speed cameras correspond to fixed radars installed on highways. "There does not seem to be a correlation between one thing and another," said sources at the traffic authority. A similar set of figures, released this week by the Associated European Motorists (AEA), also indicate a marked increase in speeding fines for the first six months of the year. The AEA figures also indicate that the Alicante province is home to two of the country’s busiest speed cameras – one at the entrance of the Tunnel of Sant Joan in the A-70 motorway heading towards Valencia.

This camera alone gathered almost a quarter of all speeding fines in the area with an average of 57 drivers per day being caught at the entrance to the tunnel. The camera is set at a section of motorway where the speed limit decreases to 80 kilometres per hour. Furthermore, AEA figures indicate that fines issued by this camera alone have jumped 22% since last year. The other ‘notorious’ Alicante speed camera is also located on the A-70 motorway but htis time nearer the city itself, where the motorway links with the A-31 in the direction of the provincial capital. This camera catches 55 drivers per day but unlike its ‘Sant Joan’ counterpart, it is not located at a reduced speed section of road. Rather, the limit there is 120 kilometres per hour therefore it is clear that the drivers being fined are flagrantly disregarding the motorway speed limit and not, as could be claimed at the Sant Joan tunnel, unaware of a reduction in the limit.

Brexit uncertainty: Spaniards in the UK to apply for residency Uncertainty over the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union is pushing many foreigners in the country – in particular Spaniards – to register as UK residents. According to the British government, 115,700 Spaniards have applied for the UK’s so-called “Settlement Scheme,” which guarantees the bulk of the rights they currently enjoy as EU citizens. This means that nearly two-thirds - or 64 percent - of the 180,000 Spaniards living in the UK have applied to legalise their status. The high figure was recorded in September, the month before the official Brexit deadline of 31st October. “We want Spaniards who are living in my country to remain there,” said Hugh Elliott, the new British ambassador in Spain, in a statement. The Spanish embassy in London is also conducting an awareness campaign to ensure Spaniards living there understand the importance of registering. The Spanish government has informed London that it does not feel that Spaniards in the UK are being offered the same guarantees as Britons in Spain, which is home to the largest British community outside the UK. Madrid has drafted a decree that leaves nearly intact the rights of the approximately 370,000 British nationals living in Spain. But the application of this decree depends on reciprocity

from London, Spanish authorities have warned. Representatives from the foreign departments of both countries met last week to discuss the matter further. “The meeting was positive, but not conclusive: we have requested further explanations about the British system,” said sources familiar with the meeting. The British model, which grants “presettled” and “settled” status to EU residents depending on the number of years they have been living in the UK, lets them work, study and have access to public healthcare. But Spanish authorities are worried about the legal force of this British mechanism. In Spain, the government decree regulating Britons’ rights will have the force of law once it goes into effect. The British system is a general scheme for all EU residents. “Our offer and the Spanish offer are not symmetrical because they are different systems, but we feel that it reciprocates the generous Spanish offer,” said a spokesperson from the British embassy in Madrid. Despite all the preliminary work, several elements will inevitably be left for the last minute, if and when a nodeal Brexit is no longer avoidable. The main challenges will then be guaranteeing equal access to healthcare and maintaining pension rights.

Human tower at Tibi Fair

For the weekend of 25, 26 and 27 October, Tibi, a little village not far from San Vicente del Raspeig on the road to

Alcoy, is preparing a lot of activities to attract people and promote local tourism. Just one hour’s drive from Torrevieja, the whole village participates in this event, offering local specialities, folk dancing, traditional music and on Saturday they will build a "torre humana" - a "human tower" of people standing on each other's shoulders. And as an extra attraction the Town Hall has invited craft association Amata to organise an Arts and Crafts fair - a fair where real craftsmen and women show and sell their own work and demonstrate their crafts. In the fair you can watch how in the time of our (grand) parents baskets and mats were made from esparto grass. In another stall a craftsman uses a blow torch to make small animals and jewelry from murano glass and the same man makes arrow heads from silex, using the pre-historic technique of flint knapping. A potter brings her wheels to teach you how to make your own little bowl or cup and other artesans give workshops so

that children can learn the first steps on the road of craft work and take their creation home. Each stall offers something different, from ceramics and pottery to crocheted cuddly toys, from miniature dogs and frogs in glass to patchwork and pyrography, from leather bags and book

covers to design jewelry in different styles and marterials: silver, glass, wood, ceramic and bronze. So you can be sure to find some really original Christmas presents. You can even order something special when you don't find what you are looking for, because most participants bring their tools along and with a bit of luck, they can even make it on the spot! There is also an area where local commerce promote and sell their specialities: sausages and preserves, sweet and salty pastries, honey and "horchata", a refreshing drink made of chufa (Tiger nut). Here you will also find a tourist information stand, because the village and its surroundings have a lot to offer. You can walk around the narrow streets of the old village centre or make a little excursion to the ruins of the castle or to the reservoir, one of the oldest of Spain that are still in function. It dates from the 16th Century and in its time it was the most important reservoir of Europe. As said before: almost the whole village participates in the event and the programme they offer includes folk dancing, traditional music and on Saturday a special group of people builds a human tower of several "floors" by climbing on each other's shoulders. The fair opens on Friday evening, the 25th of October at 6 pm. On Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October opening times are from 11 am till 2 pm and in the afternoons from 6 pm till 11 pm (on Saturday possibly later, on Sunday they close earlier). You'll find the fair at the top of the village in front of the "ermita", a little chapel overlooking the village. More information about the fair (also in English) at 639 979 678. Photographs of similar Amata fairs you can find on their web site www.amata.es http://www.amata.es/Aspe-2019.html).

250 Marijuana plants and 5 arrests Arrests were made in Alicante this week when National Police uncovered a grow farm with 250 marijuana plants. The drugs were being cultivated at a property next to a children’s school in the city and were found to be in advanced state of growth – some measuring up to three metres in height. Five arrests were made during the sting which took place after a lengthy investigation by detectives. Not only were the police keen to apprehend the gang behind the illegal plantation, but also to make safe the area. Illegal plantations of this kind can be highly dangerous for adjacent homes not only because of the danger of the storage of fertilizers used in the cultivation process, but also due to the precarious nature of the electrical set up often used by gangs to create a warm atmosphere for the plants to grow. In addition, in the case of this raid, a number of weapons were also seized which, given the location next to a school, was of concern. During the sting, as well as the plants themselves officers also seized 7 kilogrammes of dried drugs, a large quantity of cash and a number of weapons including guns, machetes and knives. The alleged perpetrators of the plantation, three men and two women, all of them Spaniards between 27 and 54 years old, were arrested for an alleged crime of drug trafficking and belonging to a criminal group.

New pet regulations for owners Pet owners in Alicante will have to abide by a new set of regulations from November with penalties of up to 18,000 euro for breaking the new laws. The new municipal ordinance on ownership, welfare and protection of animals will regulate the rights and duties of pet owners in Alicante, and establishes the prohibition of circuses with animals, as well as fairground attractions with performing animals of all kinds. A plenary session to be held at the end of November will be the next step to begin adopting the new regulations which according to officials, is a response "to the growing public awareness in favour of greater protection over pets." Owners will also be obliged to collect and dispose of dog must and excrement

immediately clean up after their pets in public. Not only that but owners will now also be expected to rinse dog urine with water if the dog ‘pees’ in public: "Urines that affect street furniture, buildings, sidewalks or any other element will be cleaned by pouring clean water on them" . Likewise, the legislation specifies that "those who bring the animals will be obliged to carry a bottle, with sufficient capacity, filled with water for their need." The legislation also aims to regularise the situation of dogs on beaches – a situation which has caused much controversy and conflict in the last year or so. Authorities said, “except for those expressly authorized for dogs, access of all types of animals to the sand of the beaches throughout the year is

GBP / EUR UPDATE

T

here was a lot of Brexit activity this week and this had an impact on the pound, which struggled as the market reacted to the latest developments. Suggestions that EU approval of the UK government’s latest proposals were “overwhelmingly unlikely” pushed the pound lower; rumours of a possible agreement to a time-limited Irish Backstop pushed it higher but only for as long as it took for the reports to prove unfounded. Meanwhile, the ecostats were largely ignored; the Services PMI came in within the sub-contraction zone at 49.5, but this wasn’t enough to move sterling. Retail sales in September came in 1.7% lower than the same month last year, according to the British Retail Consortium, which noted that "the spectre of no-deal” weighs on consumer purchasing decisions. There may be an opportunity to remove that spectre as news emerged towards the end of the week that talks between Boris Johnson and Irish PM Leo Varadkar had been constructive. The UK’s Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay is headed to Brussels for further talks as the week draws to a close and the chance of an agreement may be enough to help the pound end the

week in a better position than it began. Brexit and the US-China Trade war have been having an influence on the euro because of their influence on other currencies and the knock-on effect on global trade. It may be that investors are simply looking elsewhere when data from the continent continues to disappoint. At the end of last week, Italy’s PMI was four fifths of a point higher on the month at 51.4; in Spain, the PMI missed forecast but came in higher than Italy at 53.3. The euro did make gains after German factor orders were announced, despite reporting a 0.6% monthly fall because the decline was less than the forecast 1.5%. Similarly, industrial output was down 4% on the year, but showed an unexpected 0.3% increase in August and investors appeared keen to focus on the silver lining. News from the European Central Bank also had an impact after reports of internal opposition to the planned Quantitative Easing programme. While this may not change the current plans to begin QE in November, it may put the actions in perspective and suggest that the programme will not be as extensive or last as long as previous fiscal stimulus measures.

The new Tom Faulkner Papillon range is showcased at Decorex Tom Faulkner’s new Papillon range has been making waves at Decorex, Europe’s leading event for interior design professionals. The new collection is exciting and typically Tom Faulkner – a richness of visual simplicity where geometry meets strong, clean and unfussy.

The new Papillon range – which includes several new pieces including dining tables, occasional tables, a screen and a drinks trolley – encapsulates the California aesthetic, and was inspired by Tom’s trip to the Joshua Tree National Park back in 2016. Tom says: ‘It was the shapes created by the lines between the enormous boulders at Joshua Tree that see them being replicated in furniture in some way. They were the basis for the Boulder console last year, and this year it is

transformed into the whole Papillon range – like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.’ The Papillon collection is available in several different colourways, each named, fittingly, after butterflies. Every piece is multicoloured, and the colours themselves are all exquisitely gradated – just like ombré – fading seamlessly in and out of each other. Papillon is made from water cut steel and/or aluminium and it is also available in both standard and specialist finishes with standard glass. ‘I spent time in Los Angeles earlier this year and was bowled over by the

light and the colours of the city,’ continues Tom. ‘From the exotic desert flora to the magical sunsets, the colours can fire the imagination and lift the spirits. Exposure to such moodenhancing environment may explain the colourful direction of this collection. Just for fun we have added dichroic glass into the tables, which is iridescent, and twinkles and changes colour with the light, just like LA.’ The Papillon screen is the centrepiece of the collection, where the butterfly theme plays strong; the organic lines appearing like the veined wings of a butterfly. All the pieces are stunning and would make a true style statement in any home, bringing the joy of topquality design to your interior for years to come. Annual Charity Poppy Calendar Due to popular demand, local artist Sheila Chinnock is once again compiling her charity Poppy Calendar. Now in its third year, orders are currently being taken for the 2020 and a donation from the sales will be made to three local charities: The Royal British Legion, the Alzheimer’s Association and Elche Children’s Home. The original idea was born on the back of the popularity of her poppy paintings with friends and neighbours and raised more than 1,200 euros. Following on from that success, Sheila has continued to compile a Charity Calendar each year which is sold locally and to friends and family in the UK. Sheila left the West Midlands more than 11 years’ ago to enjoy life as an expat on the Orihuela Costa. With more time on her hands, Sheila returned to her childhood passion for art and developed a love of painting. Liking her work, friends and neighbours soon asked Sheila to

paint canvases and decorative tiles for them and many a living room, hall way and terrace on the coast boasts her work. It can also be seen decorating the walls of the Captain’s Table at Punta Marina and Hi-Life at Via Park III. Despite creating beautiful seascapes and the contemporary ‘By moonlight’ range, it is Sheila’s imaginative and carefree poppy interpretations that have captured people’s hearts and inspired the annual calendars. This year’s calendar features some of Sheila’s most popular recent poppy paintings and images from her ‘By Moonlight’ collection. Sheila said: “If my paintings can make someone happy by raising a smile and help someone in need by raising a euro, then the calendars will have done everything I hoped.” If you would like a copy of Sheila’s Charity Calendar please call her on 608 795 095 to arrange collection and payment; the calendar’s are priced at just 5€.

In addition to private donations, visitors to the event can also buy a flower for 2e which will be added to the mural on display at the event. Breast cancer … it’s a scary thought and all too many women assume that it won’t happen to them. Fact is though, every ten minutes a woman is

diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. So, don’t be ignorant, during breast cancer awareness month 2018 go for a medical checkup, it might save your life.

Early signs of breast cancer can be a lump in a breast, a painful breast or armpit, or a discharge from the nipple. Even if none of these symptoms present themselves, a doctor should be

visited to be sure. A doctor will most likely perform a manual exam and send you for a mammogram. A mammogram examination is painless and only takes about ten minutes. If any of these symptoms do present themselves there’s no need to panic. Plenty of time, pain or a lump in a breast can be perfectly harmless. The pain can be a sign of a cyst or the lump can be benign. It’s always better to be sure though. The money donated by Maria and the Pink Ladies is used by the AECC to fund its Early Detection Programme which provides subsidised tests for breast, cervical, ovarian, prostate, skin and bowel cancer. Appointments can be booked on the day or at the AECC office on the ground floor of Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre.

Alcoy

History The first traces of human presence in the area date to c. 60,000 years ago, when Neandertal hunters settled here. A site with rock paintings, dating to c. 10,000/6,500 years ago, has been discovered near la Sarga. From around the mid-3rd millennium BC people started to move from the caves to the plain where cereals were grown, while mountain fortifications were erected After the Roman conquest of the Iberians, several rural villas were built in the area, as well as a necropolis. The town was established in 1256 by James I of Aragon, with the construction of a castle on a strategic position over the Serpis river, to secure the southern frontier of the Kingdom of Valencia during the Reconquista. In 1291 the town was donated by King James II of Aragon to the Sicilian admiral Roger of Lauria; it will not return a royal possession until 1430. During the War of Spanish Succession, Alcoi sided for the cause of archduke Charles, and was therefore besieged and stripped of numerous privileges, which started a period of decline In 1873 the workers of Alcoy revolted in the Petroleum Revolution. Main sights Many outdoor rock paintings exist in Alcoi, and there are some ruins of an Iberian settlement with fragments of Greco-Roman pottery. • Casa del Pavo (Turkey's house), Art Nouveau work of Vicente Pascual Pastor, (1909). • Circulo Industrial de Alcoy, Art Nouveau work of Timoteo Briet Montaud, (1909-1911). • Casa Briet, Art Nouveau work of Timoteo Briet Montaud, • Llonja de Sant Jordi, designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. Made during the

years 1992-1995. • San Jorge Bridge, of art déco style, is considered to be the most popular image of the city. • De Dins Square, a neoclassical square in the city center of Alcoy. • Iglesia arciprestal de Santa María (Alcoy), in Valencian Baroque style. • Hermitage of St. Anthony the Abbot • Torre de Na Valora, a watchtower from the 13th century. • Barchell Castle (13th century), of likely Muslim origin. It has a rectangular keep and a court with a rainwater tank. Museums Museu Alcoià de la Festa, museum dedicated to the Moors and Christians of Alcoy, where the visitors can experience all the details, aspects and feelings surrounding this internacional festival. • Archaeological Museum Camil Visedo, established in 1945. • Shelter of Cervantes, a air-raid bunker of the Spanish Civil War (1938). • Firefighters Museum of Alcoy Natural parks • Font Roja Natural Park • Serra Mariola Natural Park Economy Alcoi had an important industry related to textile, paper, food and metal. Furthermore, it had many factories which manufacture matches. Today, Alcoi is the financial, commercial and cultural center in the surrounding area. Celebrations Moors and Christians of Alcoy Alcoy hosts the oldest Cavalcade of Magi in the world. The Jesuset del Miracle is commemorated on the last day of January. The most important touristic celebration is Moros i Cristians, in April.

They set out to ruin our wedding Two members of my family have always enjoyed showing me up, and I feared this would no exception on my wedding day. I talked to my mother about it beforehand, and wondered if it would be a good idea to speak to them ahead of the big day. After a lot of deliberation we decided it was best left, because asking them not to do something was like a red rag to a bull. The day came and everything started out well, and I was keeping my fingers crossed, but as predicted, in the church they started heckling. Everyone glared at them, and even the Vicar asked for silence. Then, one of their mobile telephones went off (deliberately I suspected ) as the Vicar had expressly asked for phones to be switched off. I was very upset. It was just typical. Things didn’t get any better at the reception either – they both got drunk and made a show of themselves – one of them threw up on the dance floor. It’s sad that people do things like this, but says a lot about them. If you want to know the root cause, it’s the old feeling of jealousy borne from inadequacy. Do these family members behave this way towards you only, or is their bad behaviour directed at other members of the family also? Do they perform this way with outsiders? Friends? It would be interesting to know whether they have a particular problem with you, or just anyone. Your longer letter reveals that you have suffered a lifelong of unpleasant behaviour and apparently it has been allowed to continue without any intervention from your parents. If people are allowed to get away with bad behaviour they will continue to do it, even throughout adulthood. You can’t do anything about them, but you can take control here by staying away from them. I realise this may be difficult if they are family members, but try cutting down of appearances at family gatherings. If you do have to attend, make sure you are on the other side of the room, or just walk away from them. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

Sanchez wants Spain to have government by December

Foreign Secretary pens open letter to expats An open letter from the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has been penned to all UK nationals living in Spain: In less than a month, the will of the British people will be delivered and the United Kingdom will leave the European Union. This, of course, will be a time of transition. But for those living in Spain, I want to assure you that as Foreign Secretary, I am working to ensure that your rights and access to services remain as strong as ever. From Madrid to Malaga, and Barcelona to Benidorm, 300,000 Britons have made Spain their home. No matter the terms of our departure from the EU, you will continue to be able to live and work in Spain. But to make sure your daily needs are met, there are some steps you must take to get ready for Brexit on 31 October. You’ll need to register for residency, check your healthcare cover, verify your passport validity online and exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one. To check the specific actions you need to take, and stay up to date, go to the Living in Spain Guide at: gov.uk/livinginspain In Government, we are doing our bit to get ready for Brexit, too. We are making sure that on 1 November, every British national living in Spain

can go on living, working, studying and accessing healthcare. We are working with the Spanish authorities to make processes as smooth and straightforward as possible, whether you’re applying for residency or a new driving licence. And we are working with the Spanish National Health System, SNS, to ensure that tourists, students and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) holders will be able to access healthcare in the same way until at least 31 December 2020. We are working hard to reach a deal with the EU. But even if the UK leaves without a deal, the UK and Spain have each taken steps to ensure you will be able to continue accessing healthcare in Spain, exactly as you do now, until at least 31 December 2020 if you are an S1 form holder. Of course, every circumstance is unique. And we know that some British people might need some extra support during this transition. We want to support those who may find it harder to complete all the paperwork – like pensioners or disabled people, those living in remote areas, and those needing assistance with language translation or interpretation. The Foreign Office has allocated an extra £3 million for charities and other voluntary organisations to help these people

keep their rights and access to services in the EU. You should be checking in regularly with the Embassy in Madrid or local consulates in Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Las Palmas, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, for information on upcoming local ‘question and answer’ sessions, town hall meetings and information stands in supermarkets and on high streets. And by now, you should also be seeing one of the largest information campaigns in British history, which launched with advice in newspapers and on billboards, encouraging people across the UK and Europe to Get Ready for Brexit. This is an exciting time, but also one of unprecedented change. We’re getting ready for Brexit on 31st October, and I would urge you to do the same.

Spain’s caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said that he wants the country to have a new government with “full powers” by December. In an interview on the Ana Rosa show on the free-to-air television channel Telecinco, Sánchez said the results of the 10th November general election will “break the deadlock and allow Spain to move forward.” This statement echoes comments made by the leader of the Socialist Party (PSOE) recently, when he promised that, if he were re-elected, December and January would be “working months.” He said that a spending ceiling would be set by January in order to “approve a new budget plan by March.” Spain has been dogged by political deadlock since the inconclusive results of the 28th April general election, when the Socialists won the highest number of seats in Congress but fell short of an absolute majority. Despite months of negotiations, Sánchez was unable to secure enough support to be sworn back into office as prime minister at an investiture vote. The biggest stumbling block was with the antiausterity party Unidas Podemos, which said it would only vote for Sánchez if the PSOE agreed to form a coalition government with the party. The Socialist leader rejected this demand and a repeat general election was called for 10th November.

In the interview, Sánchez said that Portugal is the role model to follow. “There the Socialist Party has won. And given that there is no alternative, neither from the left or the right, the rest of the political forces are going to allow for there to be a government,” he said. Sánchez added that he wants Spain to have a “progressive” and “stable” government after November 10, one that does not depend on “proindependence forces,” in reference to Catalan separatist parties and Basque nationalist groups. Key priorities According to Sánchez, the three biggest challenges facing Spain are “the [Catalan] independence drive, Brexit and the economic slowdown.” In the interview with Telecinco, the caretaker Prime Minister added that Spain is facing multiple “challenges” including “guaranteeing decent work, the ecological transition, equality between men and women, the fight against social exclusion and creating strong social harmony thanks to the statues of regional powers.” On the future of a possible Socialist executive, Sánchez said he would like the same ministers to continue in their positions – Nadia Calviño as economy minister, María Jesús Montero as finance minister; Pedro Duque as science minister; Margarita Robles as defense minister; and Fernando Grande-Marlaska as interior minister.

Spain completes 33,400 Thomas Cook repatriation More than 33,400 British tourists in Spain stranded by the Thomas Cook collapse were flown home by last Sunday – the last day of 'Operation Matterhorn', the UK's biggest repatriation exercise since World War II – according to public works and transport minister José Luis Ábalos. Congratulating his own government for their 'rapid reaction' to the 178-year-old tour operator's going out of business overnight, Ábalos said Spanish authorities 'deserved praise' for its swift response, 'especially as we only have a caretaker government'. British holidaymakers stuck in Spain – mostly in Andalucía, Catalunya, the Comunidad Valenciana and the islands – were flown home between September 23 and October 6 on 177 planes chartered by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Ábalos says the new bill of law covering measures to protect Spanish tourism businesses in the wake of Thomas Cook's sudden closure will be brought to the table on Friday this week at the next Council of Ministers. A total of 13 steps include extending the 50 percent Social Security contribution discounts in the sector to run from October to March inclusive, providing incentives for firms to offer

permanent year-round jobs, and financial help for companies, such as hotels, who have suffered major losses due to not being paid by the British tour operator. Reductions in and exemptions from airport tax for certain routes and carriers are on the cards to encourage more flights to Spain to fill the gap left by Thomas Cook, and extra funding to shore up and promote the tourism industry. Tourism bosses are also heading for South Korea to try to stimulate a new national market for Spain's holiday industry and help reduce its dependence upon the UK and Germany. Whilst these remain healthy and Britain continues to be the largest output country for tourists travelling to Spain – despite numbers having dropped since the Brexit referendum – the ministry led by Reyes Maroto wants to diversify the country's portfolio. Meanwhile, Sunderland-based Hays Travel will buy all 555 Thomas Cook branches, in a buyout that could save up to 2,500 jobs across the UK. The country’s biggest independent travel agent announced they are buying the shops from the Official Receiver, which was appointed after Thomas Cook collapsed last month.

Owner, John Hays, said he planned to reopen and rename the shops as soon as possible. He had already offered jobs to 600 former Thomas Cook staff and announced that he plans to hire more as part of the company’s expansion plans. The company, which was setup by John and his wife in 1979, already has 190 travel shops across the UK. John Hays said: “It is a gamechanger for us, almost trebling the number of shops we have and doubling our workforce – and for the industry, which will get to keep some of its most talented people”. Hays already employs 1,900 staff and reported profits of £10m last year. The price of the Thomas Cook deal has yet to be announced. On social, the company asked former Thomas Cook staff to come forward and said they are aiming to reopen the stores ‘as soon as possible.’ Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom told the BBC that she hoped the deal “will provide significant re-employment opportunities for former Thomas Cook employees, alongside the advice and support we will continue to provide to help people find a new job as quickly as possible.”

COSTS FOR SELLING A HOME IN SPAIN Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

When it comes time to sell your property, there are expenses involved in the process. I’ve heard over the years, many different variations of costs, however they were exaggerated expenses or even worse, didn’t even exist! Providing all of your paperwork is in order, there are potentially 3 costs involved when selling as a resident of Spain, however there will be 4 costs involved if you are classed as a non-resident.

1

NON-RESIDENCY RETENTION: (i.e. You do not complete a Spanish tax return as a resident). You will be obligated to leave with the Spanish Inland Revenue 3% of the agreed sales price, on the day of completion. This is held on account, to cover any Capital Gains (Profit) that may be due. If no tax is due, then the Inland Revenue will refund this 3% to you at a later date. If some tax is due, then they will refund a portion, and if you must pay tax, then you should not expect a refund. On experience, refunds have been made from anywhere between 3 months after a sale has completed, to 18 months however in some unfortunate cases, it has taken longer. It is NOT held on account to pay any unpaid utility bills.

2

TOWN HALL CHARGE; Plusvalia. This is a fee payable to the local Town Hall on every property sale, of which is an increase in the land value from the time when you originally purchased your property, to the time when you sell.It is NOT paid by the purchaser.

3

REAL ESTATE AGENTS COMMISSION. In general they can range between 3% to 10%, and even more in some areas. When choosing a professional to help sell your property, find someone that brings value to you. Don’t be afraid to ask about their recent property sales in your area. Better than that, get them to show you! The buyers do NOT pay the agents commission.

4

CERTIFICATES. There are two certificates that you need when selling a property here: Habitation Certificate &Energy Efficiency Certificate (Equivalent of an E.P.C. in the U.K.) Your trusted Real Estate Agent can assist you with this. It’s not a pain to sell in Spain, just stay clear of the rumours you hear! Selling? Enjoy the journey!

Mediterranean is warming up faster than the rest of the planet The Mediterranean basin is one of the hot spots of climate change, and in some ways it is being “hit harder than other parts of the world,” according to Wolfgang Cramer, scientific director at the French-based Mediterranean Institute of Biodiversity and Ecology (IMBE). A new report shows that the temperature increase in the Mediterranean region has already reached 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels, which means that the warming effect in this area is 20 percent faster than the global average. It is predicted that by 2040 the temperature increase will be 2.2ºC, and possibly as much as 3.8ºC in some parts of the basin by 2100. In just two decades, 250 million people will suffer from water scarcity due to the droughts. Since 2015, a group of over 80 scientists working under Cramer’s guidance has been working on a study that is being touted as “the first-ever comprehensive scientific report on the impact of climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean region.” “Never before had there been such as complete synthesis as this,” says Cramer

about a document that is filled with alarming information. The project coordinator notes that many people are in a vulnerable situation because “they live very close to the sea and also because they are poor and have few options for protecting themselves or moving away.” The report warns that in future there will be longer and more intense heatwaves, as well as more frequent periods of drought. Despite the pessimistic outlook, Cramer underscores that the goal of the study is to “provide balanced information about the risks for the entire Mediterranean basin” to politicians and their advisors. The scientist also makes a call for action: “The North needs to help the South to adapt, to guarantee stability for the economies of southern countries. Every ton of CO2 that is reduced makes a difference.” Grammenos Mastrojeni, the deputy secretary general for Energy and Climate Action at the Union for the Mediterranean, believes that this report can be useful to government leaders when they need to make policy decisions. “We are not used to

incorporating climate and nature into our policies and our planning. But if we don’t, we will be the victims of a very strong dynamic that will change the foundations of the interests on which we have built the balance of the Mediterranean,” he says in a telephone conversation. “If we don’t plan for this, it could become a very important destabilization factor. But if we manage to incorporate it into our policies, it could transform into an opportunity to improve our cooperation and achieve progress that is fair, lasting and equitable in the entire region,” he adds. The expert believes that political leaders are aware of the challenge. “Governments are at a much more advanced stage than the public thinks, but the problem is that there are no magic solutions, yet everything is happening at a tremendous speed and we need to adapt everything. Science gives us an idea of what could happen, but the question is how to incorporate this data into political action and democratic decisionmaking.”

Bingeworthy Box Sets Succession Succession is an American satirical comedy-drama television series, created by Jesse Armstrong. The series centers on the fictional Roy family, the dysfunctional owners of a global media and hospitality empire who are fighting for control of the company amidst uncertainty about the health of the family's patriarch, Logan Roy. The series has gained critical acclaim and, among its accolades, Succession won the British Academy Television Award for Best International Programme and Culkin received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film. The series also received five Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, winning for writing in 2019 .

The Rook The world of Daniel O’Malley’s 2012 novel The Rook is a weird place. The Checquy - a secret wing of British intelligence comprised of elite bureaucrats, people with supernatural powers, and at least one vampire - protects the UK from harpy attacks, excavates buried dragon eggs, and deals with neighbors complaining about loud chanting happening next door. Most of the book is dedicated to the organization’s fight against a group of Belgian mad scientists who previously invaded England with an army of monsters made by manipulating flesh and bone.

“Friday 13th” our world turned upside down

By David and Angela Hudson

R

eaders of the Costa Blanca People will no doubt have seen the national disaster in the Vega Baja area. For us the day started off well with Angie chatting to her sister in Oxford saying that we had survived a huge thunder storm and though we had water all around us we expected it to soon disappear. Fast forward just one hour later and in the space of four minutes, water was coming in to the bedroom, front door and the bathroom. We were told to abandon the house only to get 200 metres up the road when very strong currents sweep us into deep water. As I pulled Angie out of the car, having to force the door open, the car filled up with water. Fighting against the current we hung on to the front of the car for about an hour. As I am 80 and Angie 76 our strength was giving up we agreed that as we were together it was the best way to die. Suddenly we saw a man in the middle of the road – we shouted for help. The man, Tomas, afterwards told me that he did not think he could get to us but risking his life, he reached us. Inch by inch we fought the strong current and got to safety and into his in-laws’ flooded house. The father-in-law told us that 500 of his sheep had died in the flooding. We were in the cold water for eight hours before the Military Emergency Unit rescued us at 9pm. Because the fire truck was so tall a fireman knelt in the water and told Angie to step onto his knee then she was able to get to the first step and with many hands pushing her behind, she managed to climb the remaining steps into the cab. They had already heard of our story and because of our age we were celebrities. Passing our flooded house we were taken to the Refugee Centre in the monastery halfway up the mountain behind

Orihuela, a few metres from the castle. When we arrived we only had the wet clothes we stood up in having lost everything. Soon, new clothes arrived with shoes, towels and toiletries distributed. They also gave me a backpack to keep things in. Then, a hot shower and a hot meal. There were shattered people all around us and, like us, with their own horror stories in many languages. We were still in utter shock, and for the next ten days we were the oldest people there. I have been in many a ‘Gota Fria’ but this was something that I have never experienced before. The speed, the destruction, the sheer amount of water at one time left me unable to cope. For me the mental and physical demand left me unable to cope or protect my wife - leaving me broken and exhausted. I have seen it many times on the television but being in it was something that we were not prepared for. I ran a shelter for the homeless in Oxford in the 60s but never expected to be on the receiving end. In the early hours when the emergency units were stretched to breaking point those of us who were saved from death had a special relationship that we all agreed no one can understand what we went through or what we are going through. Broken men everywhere, and Angie seeing that the men did not eat spoke to them like a mum, telling them to eat something because their blood sugar would climb and they would lose energy if they continued not to eat. Five days afterwards and people were still breaking down crying and very depressed while the rest of us would step in to give them a hug and listen to their story. The first thing to go is your dignity – joint men/women washrooms and bedrooms. The Cruz Roja people from Catalonia and Alicante that greeted us were angles. Their compassion and

up and took me back for a meal and to give me the car. It was our time to be overwhelmed by people showing such compassion to us. When we left the monastery, Muslim women and Spanish men and women hugged and kissed us and wished us good luck saying that we were good people – nice! The doctor treating Angie said that he often passes our house in Las Norias and would call in for a chat. He told us to show his letter to the Torrevieja Hospital to continue the treatment (...but when we did they refused to see Angie and the Centro Salud Torrevieja also refused. Not the standard that Orihuela have for old people). Angie and David in happier times

willingness to listen to our stories meant that we not alone. This feeling of being lost and alone was to come back many times and brought us into a dark place. A Belgian was talking to two English people in an Orihuela car park when water came gushing in. Climbing onto a high place he watched his new car float pass him. At 10am the two English people were helicoptered off leaving him alone. As time went on, he began to get very cold finally he was helicopter off at 7pm - some nine hours later. We finally got him to talk and when he suddenly got many texts from people he said that he did not know that he had so many friends. Being very depressed he suddenly perked up when a friend text that she would leave her house in Malaga to pick him up at midday and take him back to Malaga until his house is ready. When he left, I gave him a hug and he whispered that he needed that. Angie did not have any shoes and her feet were cut to ribbons so the next day she received medical attention. The doctors

told me that she could lose her toes. Angie’s toes were black with deep craters and yellow puss so she needed the dressing changed twice a day and was pumped full of pills. At the rescue centre, we had Spanish speaking Muslims from Morocco, French speaking Algerians, lots of Spanish, Belgians and of course, English. My only way to get help at this stage was to walk down the mountain on a pathway so dangerous that taxis would not even come up it. Not having a phone or money this was my first hurdle, and when the phone signal was finally repaired on the Wednesday I was able to get some action. Having lost our three year old car and could not get to our house the walking up and down the mountain was taking its toll. I was desperate because at the end of the week we were being thrown out onto the streets. Carmelo, who owns the Bar Columbus in Torrevieja, on hearing our story immediately offered his apartment for as long as we needed it and even arranged a car for me. Then he travelled to Orihuela to pick me

To date 7,000 vehicles and 9,000 homes have been effected, 8,000 tons of rubbish in streets. Weeks later, the effects of that day is still raw with our neighbours. Speaking to Antonio, who is half my age, a look of shock and dejection comes over his face as he talks about it. A young couple down the road with a little boy spent all summer doing up the place only for it to be destroyed - there was furniture and toys outside ruined. Our neighbour cannot live in his house because he has lost everything like us and cannot bear coming back. It is not the money, it is that your life's work has been destroyed in a blink of an eye. Throughout the horror though, Princess Di's motto has given us the strength to go on. Life is mostly froth and bubbles Two things stand alone Kindness in another's troubles Courage in your own As Angie says, it's all froth and bubbles. David & Angela Hudson

Moffatt explains I’m A Celeb exit Scarlett Moffatt has opened up about why she won't be presenting I'm A Celebrity spin-off Extra Camp this year. The 29-year-old - who won the ITV series in 2016 - revealed she would be stepping down from her role after three years because it disrupted her Christmas. "It was a conscious decision because I've been in Australia for the past three years and you only get back home a couple of days before Christmas," she shared.

"Also, because I've just been to Namibia for six weeks filming a new show with my family called The British Tribe Next Door, I just really wanted to be at home this year." Earlier this year, Scarlett announced she was quitting the show alongside co-host Joe Swash. Sharing a snap with Joe and their other co-host Joel Dommett, Scarlett told her followers: "After chatting to one of my besties @realjoeswashy and seeing his Insta post I thought I would do mine

too. For three years I have enjoyed a jungle life, being crowned queen of the jungle, and having the greatest time presenting Extra Camp with Swashy and Joel, who I now class as best friends. "The jungle absolutely changed my life and I am massively grateful to everybody who voted for me whilst in the jungle and for your constant support to date and everybody who tuned in to Extra Camp. Massive thank you to all the team including Richard, Angela, Toni, pecks and of course

@antanddec and @hollywilloughby @joeldommett and @realjoeswashy but I have got a project that I’ve been working on (alongside my family) that I am very very excited to announce soon." [sic] Although it's yet to be confirmed, it has been reported that Adam Thomas and Emily Atack have been signed as Scarlett and Joe's replacements. Adam made it to the finals with Scarlett and Joel back in 2016, while Emily was the runner-up in last year's series.

Summer surveillance spots returning terrorists Between mid-July and mid-September, Spanish police monitoring travel across the Strait of Gibraltar detected 46 individuals suspected of being returning jihadists, according to a European Commission report. Part of a border control effort dubbed Operation Minerva, the 46 anti-jihadist alerts did not result in any arrests as there were no existing warrants against the specific suspects. As part of Operation Minerva, officers from the National Police and Civil Guard were deployed at Spain’s busy seaports of Algeciras, Tarifa and Ceuta, a Spanish exclave city located on the northern coast of Africa. Law enforcement experts from 16 other EU states and observers from the United States were also present. The European Commission report shows that for the nearly two months that Operation Minerva was in place, and during which time 1.7 million people returned to Europe in 372,000 vehicles, authorities found 220 undocumented migrants, recovered 21 stolen vehicles, confiscated 1,629 kilograms of drugs as well as weapons, and made more than 480 arrests. The report underscores that the operation also served to open new lines of investigation into terrorist activities, after officers detected 46 individuals suspected of being returning jihadists, known by the police as foreign terrorist fighters.

Although no arrests were made, surveillance measures were introduced in some cases. “Often, databases alert us to the fact that another country is requesting information about the arrival of a suspect, or even ask us to have him discreetly followed. Sometimes we are

simply asked for all possible information on the individual, to either follow up or rule out any further action,” explains a high-ranking counter-terrorism official. This source said that the 46 alerts were made because of information fed into shared databases by neighbouring countries, not by Spain. According to the counter-terrorism official, Operation Minerva triggered 53 alerts in 2018. “Among other goals, these operations aim to detect the movements of terrorists returning from combat zones following the defeat of the Islamic State,” he notes.

Operation Neptune 2 Another European surveillance operation, Neptune 2, identified 12 other suspects, nine of whom were headed for Spain. This operation, which was coordinated by Interpol and supported by Spain, France, Italy, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, focused “on the threats posed by suspected foreign terrorist fighters potentially using maritime routes between North Africa and Southern Europe during the busy summer tourist season,” according to a release by Frontex, the European border and coast guard agency. During Operation Neptune 2, officers inspected passengers on ships, ferries and cruise liners departing or arriving at seven ports of the Western Mediterranean, including Alicante and Motril (Granada) in Spain. “Officials carried out more than 1.2 million searches across Interpol’s databases for stolen and lost travel documents, nominal data and stolen vehicles. These resulted in 31 active investigative leads, with more than 12 of these linked to the movement of terror suspects,” said Frontex in a press release. According to Spanish police sources, nine of these 12 individuals were headed for ports in Spain, but “they were not arrested because the countries that had sent in information about them had not issued arrest warrants.”

Timesaving meal prep ideas If you're trying to clean up your diet, preparing your own meals is key. But when you come home exhausted after a long day at work, the last thing you want to do is dice onions or wait around for a chicken to roast. The way to avoid giving in and calling Seamless is to do your food prep ahead of time, say on Sunday, so you have all your ingredients ready to hit the microwave - or even better, a stash of pre-made meals ready to put on your plate. Chop a bunch of veggies If you're prepping meals just for yourself or one other person, it shouldn't take more than an hour to wash, peel, and chop all the vegetables you'll need for the entire week ahead. Prep enough greens for four to five days, so you'll have them to toss into a stirfry, throw in a sheet pan, or even munch raw. Don't love the idea of all that chopping; buy pre-chopped veggies to make a quick meal. They are more expensive, but if it helps you eat healthier, it may be worth the extra cash. Cook one or two protein sources Pan-fry chicken breasts, grill salmon fillets, or hard-boil a halfdozen eggs at once, and you'll have versatile, high-quality protein that can last the entire

workweek. Vegans and vegetarians can can cook a big pot of lentils, chickpeas, or beans all at once, with an eye toward adding them to veggie-based dishes all week long.

Double up on servings When whipping up dinner for her family make extra servings of vegetables, grains, and chicken to use as ingredients for future meals. It's a no-brainer way to keep your prep time minimal yet always have ingredients ready for a quick, fresh dish the next night. Buy food in cans Canned foods have a reputation as not-so-healthy sodium bombs. But staples like canned tuna, crushed tomatoes, and beans provide healthy protein and can be stored safely for months, so they're worth keeping in your pantry on the ready. The trick is to scan the label of each canned product you're thinking of buying, to make sure it's not drowning in added salt, sugar, or other additives.

Pack food in storage containers Pick up food storage containers in varying sizes, so you have places to separate and stash pre-made veggies, sauces, protein, and other items. The containers will help them stay fresh too. For some foods, plastic bags work just as well. Store your prepared veggies in plastic baggies in the proper proportions for the meals you plan to eat.

Invest in time-saving appliances Love the idea that you can spend just 15 to 20 minutes in the morning and then have a delicious meal ready by 5 p.m. ...then use a slow cooker. They are simple to use and make eating healthy so much easier. Other time-saving tools include a microwave and an Instant Pot, the multi-tasking appliance that acts as a pressure cooker, rice cooker, and more.

How lager became the world’s local drink Heineken is the world’s second-largest brewing company. It sells beer in over 190 countries and makes it in over 125 breweries in 70 countries, employing over 80,000 people, and selling 300 local, regional, national or international brands. Heineken, the main brand, is the fifth best-selling beer in the world, available in more countries than any other beer. Without Heineken’s global vision of brewing, selling and exporting lager far away from its Dutch breweries, the beer world might not be quite the way it is. In 1864 Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought the Den Hoybergh (the Haystack Brewery) in Amsterdam. Heineken didn’t know much about brewing and his brewery was in decline, but he was confident he could do something great. Within a year he had brewed 5,000 barrels of ale. Within two years he’d bought a plot of land on the then-outskirts of Amsterdam to build a bigger brewery powered by steam. Within five years he’d hired a German brewmaster, Wilhelm Feltmann, and made a big decision: that Hollandsch bier, a range of mostly dark, low-alcohol, often sour ales that he and his compatriots were making, was not the future – a decision made after a sobering experience at an international exhibition in Amsterdam where the clear and sparkling newness of the Bavarian lagerbier a neighbouring Dutch brewer was offering presented an unwelcome contrast to Gerard’s flat, cloudy ales. In February 1870 Heineken released a new lager called Heineken’s Beiersch. Also in 1870, three wealthy families opened a competing brewery in

Amsterdam, naming it after the river that ran alongside: Amstel. Their beer sold well in cafes and bars and they used the growing railway network to sell it beyond the city. The stories of Amstel and Heineken will come to intertwine. Heineken were brewing several types of beer by 1880. Gerstebier was a quickly brewed and cheap bottom-fermented dark lager for the local market, and even into the twentieth century it accounted for half of the output from their Rotterdam brewery; Beiersch was the Dutch equivalent of a Bavarian dark lager; Münchener Bier was dark Munich lager sold domestically, whereas they had a Vienna beer for export (a sign, perhaps, of the renown of Vienna overseas), and a Pilsener Bier. With the latter, it’s a possibility that Heineken are responsible for this spelling of the style as the brewery say that brewmaster Feltmann didn’t want the name to be confused with Pilsen beer, so he spelt it Pilsener. Whether true or not, from around the late 1870s we see Pilsner, Pilsen and Pilsener as spellings for the palest style of lager, with the word Pils coming later (Heineken’s Pilsener would become their flagship beer and from the 1950s it’s been the beer we simply know as “Heineken”). Heineken were one of the early adopters of ice-making machinery and artificial refrigeration, and in 1886, following some bad fermentations, they opened a laboratory in the Rotterdam brewery and utilising Hansen’s pure culture method, was able to isolate two yeasts, which they called A-yeast and Dyeast. Heineken were one of the first

breweries after Carlsberg to isolate their own pure yeast, and the A-yeast is what they still use today. Gerard died suddenly in 1893, at the age of 51. By then Heineken were brewing some 200,000hl a year when the average Dutch brewery made 3,000hl. The brewery continued to grow under the stewardship of his wife and later, in 1914, Gerard’s only son, Henry. It would be the inter-war years, through a series of partnerships and takeovers, that would come to define Heineken for the rest of the century and, ultimately, its place in the beer world. Between 1919 and 1934 Heineken took over six Dutch breweries, mostly to use as depots; they bought Brasserie Léopold in Brussels (after failing to buy the Artois brewery); and they invested in Interbra, a company with large holdings in ten international breweries, which gave Heineken access to facilities in what’s now Kinshasa (capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Indonesia and Belgium. They also developed partnerships in the Far East, West Indies, England, West Africa and the United States. Pieter Feith was Export Manager at this time, and was largely responsible for Heineken’s global outlook. One of his early deals was with two Scotsmen in Singapore, John Fraser and David Chalmers Neave, who had started out as Bible salesmen and then moved into lemonade. Feith wondered if they’d like to expand into beer, and in 1932 their joint company, the Malayan Breweries Limited, started to produce Tiger Beer, which would go on to become south-east.

Asia’s best-selling lager. Around this time they took over a brewery in Surabaya, Indonesia, where they started to brew a brand called Bintang. Today that beer is so dominant in its market that Bintang is effectively the Indonesian word for beer. No other brewery was doing anything like this at that time. In the past breweries grew by exporting beer, but now advances in brewing equipment and technology meant it was possible to make lager fast and on a large scale anywhere in the world, which in turn made beer affordable for more people. Heineken introduced brewing into countries that had previously had no locally brewed beer, and the beer they made wherever they went was a light and refreshing pale lager, where they took a systematic approach by first creating or investing in a local brand to establish or grow a domestic market, and then later introducing Heineken as a new, premium lager, to be seen as a better beer choice over the weaker or simpler domestic brews. After growing in the East, Heineken then looked West, to a market that hadn’t drunk a (lawful) beer in a long time, and in March 1933 Feith, along with some beer as cargo, boarded the Statendam passenger ship from Amsterdam, arriving in Hoboken three days after America’s Prohibition had been was lifted. Heineken became the first legally imported beer into the US in thirteen years. ....the parts other beers cannot reach Then the foreign partnerships increased in the mid-1930s as the Dutch

beer market crashed and drinking declined. A post-war boom of expansion combined with anti-German sentiment (meaning the big German exporting breweries like Beck’s and Löwenbräu were no longer sending their beer overseas) and saw Heineken quickly become the world’s largest beer exporter. That growth actually began during the war, when in 1941 the Archipelago Brewing Company, founded by Beck’s Brewery in what’s now Jakarta, and with another brewery in Singapore (brewing Anker/Anchor and Diamant/Diamond respectively), was seized by the Brits as “enemy territory”. Heineken’s joint owned Malayan Breweries took the breweries over and used them to supply beer to Allied troops around Asia. After the war they used the company to brew beer for the recovering local markets, at a time when beer was becoming more and more accessible to growing numbers of people, giving the world a taste for fresh, cold lager. In the late 1940s Africa became a focus. The United Africa Company, an arm of Unilever, basically traded in everything it could. Heineken approached it about a partnership to build a brewery in Nigeria, and in 1949 Star lager was released. Within five years it was the most drunk lager in the region.51 In the early 1950s almost half Heineken’s export profits were coming from Africa, mostly from Nigeria and Ghana, and, having created the market for lager in Africa, they went on to build several other breweries later in the decade, and even more in the 1960s and onwards.

Listen to your food cravings

Food cravings can really pack a wallop. A desire for red meat may come on so strong that you veer off the highway in search of a burger joint. Or perhaps all you can think about is a homemade brownie. But it turns out these impulses are sometimes more than simple urges - they can also offer an insight into what your body really needs. We live in a culture that vilifies cravings. We think of them as forbidden desires that must be squashed. And that's unfortunate, because cravings aren't the

enemy, they are a communication from our body and should be listened to. Here’s how to interpret and heed those signals in a healthy, mindful way. And keep in mind, of course, that your hankerings are just one piece of a larger puzzle as, of course, not everything about our health is going to be communicated to us in a food craving. Note unusual and persistent cravings Examine whether your

yearning is a huge departure from the norm. If you continue to have a “strong, unusual, insistent” desire that doesn’t get resolved by meeting it - say, by eating a steak when the pining for red meat strikes - “it’s a great idea to check in with your doctor.” Something like unquenchable thirst, for example, would make an expert think, “Do we have something going on with blood sugar levels, and it might be diabetes?” (And if you suspect hydration is the issue, make sure you’re getting electrolytes in addition to water).

Spain joins biggest ever study into antidepressants A global study on anti-depressant use in which Spain took part has shown that these highly-prescribed drugs are, in fact, safe, even long-term. Published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, the investigation is 'without doubt the most conclusive' into the longterm safety of various types of anti-depressants, including tricyclic and SSRI medication, according to Dr Eduard Vieta, scientific director of Spain's Mental Health Research Centre (CIBERSAM). “It shows that, properly used, they provide much greater benefit than risk,” Dr Vieta reveals. A total of 4,471 case studies and 252 full-text articles with data from 1,012 individual effect-size estimates were used in 45 meta-analyses – or reviews of existing research reports – albeit some of the newer drugs available, such as the Danish-created Vortioxetine, retailed as Brintellix, did not have enough information to hand at present. But the other most popular types, such as Prozac, Seroxat and Sertraline are said to be 'very safe' with 'no convincing evidence' of major health risks. According to the JAMA Psychiatry report, typical adverse effects include an increased suicide risk in patients aged 18 and under, pre-term births or autism spectrum disorders in children whose mothers or fathers had taken SSRIs before or during conception or pregnancy, sexual dysfunction, bone fractures

caused by acquired osteoporosis, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. In most cases, a probability rating of 5 percent - considered the minimum for evidence to be 'significant' in medical and psychological, among other scientific, studies – was not reached, and many of the serious adverse effects were found to have been caused by the conditions the medications were prescribed for rather than the drugs themselves. For example, sexual dysfunction may be a result of depression itself and merely aggravated by the effects of antidepressants, and suicide risk may already be present, but the 'clarity of mind' created by taking these medications may enable those with suicidal thoughts to 'plan' their attempts properly. No evidence was found for anti-depressants actually preventing suicide, however. Children with autism spectrum disorders born to parents on antidepressants were found to be low enough in number that the risk can be considered insignificant, although in some cases, the patient taking antidepressant medication may already have an underlying, possibly undiagnosed, autism spectrum disorder which is simply inherited by their offspring. As many as one in 10 users of antidepressants report gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, diarrhoea, acid,

and cramps, as well as excessive yawning and tiredness, insomnia when doses are increased, restlessness and muscular contractions, but in the vast majority of cases these wear off after a few weeks and the digestion issues can often be prevented by not taking the drugs on an empty stomach. One of the worst-tolerated 'normal' side-effects of the newly-released Vortioxetine reported is generalised itching, either upon initial prescription or upon dosage increase, but again, this

usually ceases after the first one to three weeks. The vast majority of 'normal' or 'expected' anti-depressant side-effects can be successfully treated while they last if the patient finds them intolerable. Dr Evangelos Evangelou, epidemiologist at Greece's Ioannina University and at Imperial College London – the main author of the

research, which involved scientists from all over Europe, the USA, Canada and Asia – said: “Although we have shown that anti-depressants are safe, we need to bear in mind that adverse effects need to be clinically controlled and monitored during treatment.” Worldwide sufferers Earlier, but recent, research has shown that up to one in four people worldwide suffer from the type of psychiatric conditions for which anti-depressants would normally be prescribed – anxiety, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), major (circumstantial, temporary and very severe) depression, dysthymic (chronic, but milder and usually hereditary) depression, bipolar (formerly 'manic') depression, and bulimia and other eating disorders – and that its prevalence is similar in almost every country, albeit higher than average in third-world women. At present, it is thought that between 8 percent and 10 percent of US residents take at least one type of anti-depressant, although the actual clinical need for them could be higher given that, in the United States, income typically dictates access to healthcare. Overall, anti-depressants are the thirdmost prescribed type of medications on earth.

Instagram could soon let you send direct messages on desktop You may soon be able to use Instagram Direct to ping one or more people on desktop. Tipster Jane Manchun Wong tweeted about the rumored feature on Tuesday, along with screenshots of what Direct for desktop could look like. According to Wong, Direct for desktop web would resemble its Messenger counterpart by showing a list of users and messages on the left side and individual conversations on the other side of the page. Users will also be able to open up another tab on the right to see message information such as a list of members in a conversation, according to the screenshots. Currently, Instagram's web version allows users to scroll through their feeds and carry out other mobile app functions such as commenting and liking, but they can't yet send direct messages.

New EU rules make Total pavement ban appliances easier planned for scooters and bikes to repair New EU rules just announced, and due to come into force in April 2021, will ensure that household appliances will last longer and use less water and electricity. The legislation has been prompted by complaints from consumers across Europe frustrated by machines that break down when they are just out of warranty - the planned obsolescence controversy. Under the EU's new standards, manufacturers will have to make spare parts, such as door gaskets and thermostats, available for a period of up to ten years. But campaigners for the "right to repair" say they do not go far enough as only professionals not consumers - will be able carry out the repairs. Campaigners say individual consumers should also be allowed to buy spares and mend their own machines. But manufacturers said this would raise questions about risk and liability. Instead, manufacturers will have to ensure that key parts of

the product can be replaced by independent professionals for the period stipulated - ten years for washing machines and dishwashers; seven years for refrigerators. The new rules are aimed primarily at ensuring that appliances have a longer life, but also include provisions to make them more energy efficient, reducing the strain on the environment and saving the consumer up to 150€ per year. The environmental issue has been one of the main priorities in this new legislation, as the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen underlined. With this legislation we are striving to "reduce the environmental footprint" and "reduce energy bills" for all European Union citizens, she said. The new eco-design standards require washing machines and dishwashers to use less water. Star ratings for the energy efficiency of appliances will be increased. Current regulations are seen to be

outdated, with more than 55% of washing machines sold in the EU ranked A+++ on the label. The move could directly save €20bn on energy bills per year in Europe from 2030 onwards equivalent to 5 percent of EU electricity consumption. Chloe Fayole of environmental group Ecos said: “People are demanding their right to repair things they own because they’re tired of products that are designed to break prematurely.” The new measures will also be applicable to supermarket and restaurant refrigerators, as well as vending machines. The European Commission estimates energy savings of some 167 TWh by 2030, the equivalent of the total annual energy consumption of Denmark. They will also result in nearly 50 million tonnes of CO2 emissions savings.”

Electric scooter users and cyclists will soon be prohibited from both riding and parking on pavements under a new set of regulations being prepared by the Traffic Department. The new rules were outlined today by Pere Navarro, Director General of Traffic, in his official presentation of the latest campaign on behalf of wheelchair users - "I can't go here, I can't fit through there" (Por aquí no puedo, por aquí no paso) promoted by the Association of People with Spinal Injuries & Severe Physical Disabilities (ASPAYM). "Pavements are for pedestrians, wheelchair users and for people pushing prams and pushchairs," he said "and our intention is that vehicles such as scooters will not use them in any capacity." "Current regulations prevent scooters and bikes travelling

along the pavements, but we also want to prevent them parking there too," he added. With this in mind, he stressed the need to reduce the number of parking spaces for cars in order to allow spaces for scooters, bicycles

and motorcycles to park, away from the pavements. The Director General of Traffic praised ASPAYM for its recent campaign and highlighted the fact that in addition to wheelchair users "there are nine million people over 65 who need to walk for health reasons and who also want the pavements to be free of obstacles."

"It is true that obstacles are everywhere," he continued, "and sometimes we are not aware of the amount of space taken up by lamposts, traffic lights, road signs and bins, not to mention advertising hoardings or outside seating for bars and cafés". In his opinion "the challenge is to design a pole that can combine street lighting with traffic lights, road signs and rubbish collection" and that this requires "imagination and the kind of vision you get from a wheelchair rather than from the comfort of an office". The primary objectives of this latest campaign are to appeal to society as a whole to adopt safe and responsible behaviour in public spaces in order to promote a harmonious coexistence of different road and pavement users in an attempt to prevent traffic accidents.

What does it really mean to be happy? When you go to your “happy place,” you might picture yourself relaxing on a beach in Bali, fitting back into a pair of favourite old jeans, or landing that promotion you’ve been gunning for. But here’s the thing: Elation, achievement, and success aren’t the same as the warm and fuzzy feelings of happiness—and mixing them up is not going to help. That’s why we endeavoured to learn what happiness really means. Research and real-life experience has taught experts what helps people to achieve happiness. Here we look as their wisdom and advice to help us boost our own joy. “Happiness isn’t something you feel. It’s something you do.” Many people think that they have a clear idea of what happiness looks like and for many its based on achievements, passing exams, buying ‘that’ house, getting promoted etc. However, how many times have you made that achievement, been proud for a while but then the happiness bubble always pops. This leaves people feeling that they are aren’t doing enough to gain the privilege of feeling good. The constant striving can leave people hitting a wall, feeling burned out and like they can’t or simply don’t want to push anymore. For those who have experienced these feelings, experts suggest looking at and exploring ‘gratitude’. It’s easy to dismiss this school of thought as a load of old rubbish, can saying things you are grateful for out load really make you happy? After all if you are grateful for everything, would you still strive towards anything? Experts suggest trying a 30-day

experiment. Each day write down something you are grateful for and say “thank you” to someone at least once each day. People who try this say they noticed a difference pretty quickly. We are not saying that they became a happy-golucky person overnight, but people claim they start to find joy in small, everyday moments. Tiny things, like someone giving you a hug. Coming into my living room and noticing the light hitting your favourite picture or ornament. Even driving to work and discovering the pleasures of seeing the sea all over again. People who practice gratitude feel that they weren’t present for those moments before, they never gave them any consideration. Happiness isn’t always something you feel, but something you do, or create. You don’t have to earn it, or be “good enough.” You just have to practice it. “Winning the lottery won’t make you happy indefinitely” Even though money matters, it’s not the only thing that contributes to our happiness. If money means covering all of our basic needs, it can positively contribute to happiness. However, after basic needs are met, increasing your disposable income follows the law of diminishing returns. The impact on happiness from 100 more dollars when you’re already rich? Close to zero. In happiness research, there’s something

called “set-point theory.” It states that the increase in someone’s happiness in response to life events, such as winning the lottery or moving into a bigger house, will return to its baseline after time. This theory teaches us that we should enjoy the journey, not the destination, of life events. It’s important to remove the illusion that there is any one thing in this world that will make us permanently

happy because it’s simply not true. “Being happy is more than satisfying your impulses” Many neuroscientists would tell you that all happiness is a chemical and electrical process in the brain: motivation, followed by reward. As much as we love neuroscience, it’s good to stay curious about the possibilities beyond what science is ready to prove. The more experts learn about timeless happiness, the more they beleive that it correlates with three experiences—relationships, contribution, and mastery. By “relationships,” they mean a feeling of connection and belonging—being seen for who you really are. (Tribes in South

Possible cure for cervical cancer Australian scientists believe they have found a cure for cervical cancer thanks to a breakthrough in gene-editing technology. Researchers from Griffith University in Queensland have been able to use the geneediting technology to target and remove cervical cancer tumours in mice using "stealth" nanoparticles. The mice treated using the gene-editing technology had a 100 per cent survival rate, raising hopes for women with cervical cancer, ABC reported. According to scientists, the gene-editing technology, known as CRISPER-Cas9, is injected into

the patient's bloodstream. The nanoparticles then search for the cancer-causing gene and cut the gene in half. When the cell repairs the gene with extra DNA, the cell doesn't recognise the cancerous cells and regrows with healthy components. Professor Nigel McMillan compared the breakthrough to being like a spell-checker. "This is like adding a few extra letters into a word so the spell checker doesn't recognise it anymore. The cancer must have this gene to produce, once edited, the cancer dies. "We looked for lots of markers,

inflammation and damage, but they were perfectly fine, so this is very exciting." The study was published in Molecular Therapy. McMillan says while there are still many steps to go through, he has applied for a grant to begin human trials within five years. Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix — the lower part of the uterus. You can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer by having screening tests and receiving a vaccine that protects against HPV infection.

Africa traditionally greet each other with “Sawabona,” which translates to “I see you.” The response? “Sikhona,” or “I’m here.”) By “contribution,” they mean a sense that as a person we are offering something to the world that’s uniquely our own and makes a difference to others. And by “mastery,” they mean growing and working to be better versions of ourselves. The fourth thing that ties into happiness and often gets overlooked is reflection. Not vegging out in front of the TV, but actually making time to quiet the mind and take stock of where you are currently in life. The stuff we think gives us “immediate happiness” — such as scrolling through social media—it activates the brain’s ancient motivation-and-reward system, but only gives us momentary pleasure. The average person swipes there phone thousands of times a day. We don’t even know we’re doing it anymore. When we first “liked” that post on Instagram, it felt great. Now, it’s just a habit. To have happiness, we need to say yes to things that strengthen our relationships, help us contribute to the world, or allow us to master new skills—and learn to resist things that just satisfy our impulses. In other words, spend less time looking at screens and more time looking at nature, the people you care about, and yourself. Do that and you’ll feel a sense of satisfaction.

“Don’t chase happiness—look for meaning instead.” Happiness is typically defined as a positive emotional state—this smileyface ideal. People quote Aristotle as saying, “A good life is a happy life.” But really, the Greek word that Aristotle uses in his teachings, eudaimonia, better translates to “flourishing” than “happy.” And when you read him, he specifically makes a distinction between “flourishing” and “happy.” Flourishing is living a virtuous life where you pursue excellence in your work, relationships, and community. Doing those things might not make you feel happy all the time. They’re hard. They can be stressful. Being a parent or leader takes effort, right? But it leaves you with a deeper sense of meaning. I advocate for the pursuit of a meaningful life, rather than chasing happiness. Research backs this up. When people pursue eudaimonia, they end up with greater well-being. They’re actually healthier, and they live longer, too. People who believe their lives are meaningful have less of the brain plaque associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and they’re less likely to develop cardiovascular disease. So what does it take to create meaning? That’s the million-dollar question. One of the key aspects of a meaningful life is transcendence—those rare moments when you step outside yourself and feel connected to a higher reality. It might happen on a trip to the Grand Canyon, or while you’re meditating, or sitting in church. Transcendent experiences exist on a wide range, and they can change you.

CBD beauty CBD has become one of beauty's biggest commodities. When news first spread, beauty buffs were sceptical, assuming it would be another fad. But with a recent report finding that sales of CBD products have increased by a whopping 99 percent, and purchases near doubling in 2019, it looks like it is definitely here to stay. If you're a newbie, you might not be acquainted with any CBD, or know the benefits. Although on the rise, they're still relatively niche, so you need to know exactly what you're looking for before splashing the cash. CBD is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your smoking stance) it isn't THC so it won't get you high, it can however reduce pain and inflammation, including skin conditions like acne and eczema and is a known source of antioxidants. Our bodies have natural receptors for cannabis extracts, so they can get to work fast, which is why they're so

sought after in skincare. Delve into the wonderful world of CBD and you'll see some ingredient discrepancy - CBD oil and hemp oil are not actually the same thing, although many brands market them as such. Hemp oil contains trace amounts of CBD which, although considered to be insignificant, still work wonders on our skin. Herbivore Emerald Deep Moisture Glow Oil 30ml, £42 Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls; let me formally introduce you to this glow-booting elixir from supreme skincare brand Herbivore. Their first cannabis-infused offering, a blend of restorative oils: hemp seed, meadowfoam seed and borage seed, work alongside powerful antioxidants ashwagandha, turmeric and shiitake mushrooms to protect, revitalise and hydrate. They feel so strongly about the life-changing benefits of cannabis that in the US, every Emerald sale sees $1 donated to women-owned cannabis organisations.

Gmail goes to the dark side Google has begun rolling out dark mode for two of its most used apps, Gmail and Maps, for iOS and Android. But… not everyone will get a taste of it. In a tweet, a spokesperson confirmed the company is “rolling out dark mode for Gmail in the latest update.” The spokesperson added that users with Android 10 and iOS 11 (and newer versions) should see an option to enable it in settings “soon.” “Currently dark mode options are only available for Android 10+ and iOS 11+,” the spokesperson said in a follow-up tweet. “If these OS versions are available for your device we recommend updating in order to use dark mode.”

In other news, Google also teased dark mode for Maps via the official Android account on Instagram. The post suggests the feature should already be available on Android 10, but there’s no mention of iOS yet. Indeed, some Redditors have been spotting minor hints of dark mode in Maps in older devices already, like darkthemed buttons. While most iPhone users shouldn’t encounter any trouble updating to a version of iOS with support for dark mode, that might be an issue for Android users — especially owners of handsets running custom skins — who tend to receive such updates with a delay. I’m currently using a Huawei

P30 Pro, and have yet to receive the update for Android 10, for instance. My colleague Ivan Mehta was able to switch on dark mode for Gmail on his iPhone 11, though. To get the new theme in Gmail on your iPhone, you have to enable dark mode on iOS. Alternatively, head to Settings > Theme from the Gmail app (though that setting doesn’t seem to be available to all iOS 13 users yet). As is the case with rollouts like that, some users might get dark mode with a slight delay — even if your phone runs the newest version of Android or iOS. So don’t be too discouraged if you’re one of these people.

NASA to reveal heart of the Milky Way NASA is hoping to reveal what lies at the centre of the Milky Way in unprecedented detail by getting the highest ever quality images of the galactic centre using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy and our solar system sits in the Orion Arm, about 26,000 light years from the centre—one light year is approximately six trillion miles. At the center of the Milky Way there is a ‘supermassive’ black hole with a mass about four million times that of our sun. This is surrounded by millions of stars travelling extremely fast. But this whole region is enveloped in interstellar dust, meaning scientists cannot see exactly what is going on. So far, only the brightest stars have been detected. However, this will soon change, NASA has said. The JWST, which is currently scheduled for launch in 2021, will be able to peer through the dust and send back images of the heart of the Milky Way in "unprecedented detail," the space agency said in a statement. Often, the JWST is referred to as NASA's alien hunting telescope, as its

instruments on board will be able to detect biosignatures coming from planets beyond our solar system. This will allow scientists to focus in on planets that may support life—potentially answering one of the most fundamental questions in the universe: are we alone? However, the JWST will also be used to view the galactic centre in infrared, meaning it will be able to

see this kind of light coming from the core. "We're only seeing the tip of the iceberg from the ground, Torsten Böker of the European Space Agency and Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), said in a statement. "Webb will be able to study fainter stars and tell us more about the overall stellar population."

Böker is co-investigator on one of the studies planned on the Milky Way's centre. It is hoped this research will help scientists understand more about the supermassive black hole that lies there— known as Sagittarius A*. "Even one image from Webb will be the highest quality image ever obtained of the galactic centre," Roeland van der Marel, from the STScI and principal investigator on another JWST study. Sagittarius A* is a fairly quiet black hole, but when clumps of dust nearby get too close and fall in, it can produce flares of light. However, the glow from the black hole's disk has never been detected before. "Detecting the disk around Sagittarius A* with Webb would be a home run," Böker said. The researchers are also hoping to find out more fundamental questions about how galaxies and black holes form. "So many interesting, strange things happen at the centres of galaxies. We want to find out what's happening in our own," Marcia Rieke, principal investigator on the JWST's Near Infrared Camera, said in a statement.

Brexit advice latest Although it seems like a resolution comes near then goes away again, Europe is still preparing for Brexit, and as such the DVLA is issuing constant advice as to how British driving licence holders need to prepare for the change.

If you are a resident in Spain then you should have changed your licence to a Spanish one already, in which case the advice doesn´t affect you. It is important that your licence is changed straight away. The DVLA, who is the issuing authority, so that you are liable for a fine if you fail to do this, irrespective of the time permitted in Spain. If you are still driving with a licence issued in the United Kingdom, then Brexit changes affect you. As now, you will need your UK driving licence to drive in an EU or EEA country. In addition, you may need one or more

international driving permits (IDPs), depending on which country you’re going to or through. There are 3 types of IDP:1926 IDP, 1949 IDP and 1968 IDP. The type of IDP you need depends on the country you

will be driving in. For driving in Spain, you will not need an IDP when you are visiting the country until after the end of July 2020, or 9 months after the date the UK leaves the EU in the event of an extension. After July 2020 you will still not need an IDP if you are a tourist and are visiting for a period of up to 6 months. However, if you are staying in Spain for longer than 6 months then you will need a 1949 IDP. So, you will have to return to the UK to get that, another reason why residents must change their licence to a Spanish one as soon as

possible. If you drive between the United Kingdom and Spain, then you also need to be aware that you will need a different IDP for driving through France. You will need a 1968 IDP and your UK licence. You will need to carry a motor insurance green card when driving in the EU and EEA.Contact your vehicle insurance provider 1 month before you travel to get green cards for your vehicle, caravan or trailer. You’ll need multiple green cards if: you have fleet insurance - you’ll need a green card for each vehicle

your vehicle is towing a trailer or caravan - you’ll need one for the towing vehicle and one for the trailer / caravan (you need separate trailer insurance in some countries) you have 2 policies covering the duration of your trip, for example, if your policy renews during the journey The UK recently introduced trailer registration and you will need to register some commercial and noncommercial trailers before towing them to or through most EU and EEA countries. You should display a GB sticker on the rear of your vehicle, and trailer if you are towing one, even if you currently have a number

plate which includes the GB identifier. You will need a GB sticker even if you have a number plate with the Euro symbol and Great Britain national identifier. If you are travelling with pets you also need to be aware that the Pet Passport Scheme, which is a European initiative, will also cease to be valid, and so you must consult with the terms that each country demands before transporting animals, including their return to the UK. If you are involved in a road accident you might need to bring a claim against either the driver or the insurer of the vehicle in the EU or EEA country where the accident happened. This will vary by insurance company. You might have to make your claim in the local language. You might not get compensation if the accident is caused by an uninsured driver or if the driver cannot be traced. This will vary from country to country. The British government is constantly updating this information, and providing more, and so you should monitor the official website, gov.uk, for the latest updates.

Fighting Zombies! We may be in the month of Halloween, but ZOMBIES walk amongst us every day of the year. When we talk about zombies, we don’t mean the risen undead, but rather zombie pedestrians, transfixed by their mobile phones or music, oblivious to the dangers that the road presents. To try to fight the phenomenon, the IndustriasSaludesgroup, a company which specialises in road safety signally, unveiled their latest invention in Madrid this week, specifically aimed at alerting pedestrians to the presence of traffic and a safe crossing point. The device is called 'FuturaPulse’ and is manufactured in Spain and can contribute to improving safety at crossings with traffic lights. An illuminated bar spans the crossing, and provided tactile feedback, in other words it vibrates, which can also be useful to those with genuine vision problems, in addition to those simply distracted.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Before we start today’s column, I know that at least seven out of the eight of you that might read this will already know the result of England’s trip to Bulgaria where, no doubt, they’ve pulled their respective fingers out and have managed to qualify for Euro 2020 after all. But, folks, that is really not the point.

The question is, where on Earth do you start with that? The team selection didn’t look too bad if you overlooked the fact that Michael Keane still seems to be Southgate’s preferred partner to Harry Maguire in the absence of John Stones - yes, we live in a world where John Stones is probably one of the more reliable central defenders available to Gareth. Keane, as he proved several times, but none moreso than when he let the

is top of the Premier League, creating goals for fun from right-back and a seriously good player. Trippier is only just regaining credibility as a top-flight footballer having been dire for Spurs last season. Can we all take a moment to remember that Harry Maguire is the most expensive defender the world has ever seen. Naturally, that leads to the obvious assumption that he must also be the best. Let me assure you, that is a crazy assumption. Harry is slow, terrible at

England’s woeful outing in the Czech Republic has to be commented on and a few home truths need to be told.

Mason Mount fanboy as Frank Lampard clearly is, but I don’t feel you can judge the lad on this performance. He was allegedly at the tip of the midfield triangle in the first-half but his two partners were so deep that they might have been sitting in the crowd - meaning that the Czech midfield had just a little space to exploit and pull a few strings. Jadon Sancho will have better days and, to be fair, I cannot blame Southgate for picking him when the other option was a woefully out-of-form Marcus Rashford. Raheem Sterling was poor - we are allowed to say that once in a while, aren’t we? The penalty came from him ruining a good goalscoring opportunity with a bad touch and I am convinced that had he been wearing a light blue top he’d have scored one of the other chances that came his way. He did create a great chance for Harry Kane in the second half but, let’s be honest, we didn’t deserve to score it.

And you’ll be oh so delighted to know that as there is nothing else to talk about this week - no Premier League football, no transfer window and OK, we might come on to Rooney vs Vardy a bit later - I have time to go all in on Gareth Southgate and his team.

Speaking of Kane, a fine penalty indeed

guy peel off the back of him to draw the Czech’s level, is terrible. He makes Yerry Mina, a man only playing Premier League football because he scored a header against England from a setpiece in the World Cup (like that puts him in exclusive company), look like the competent player out of the two of them. Did you see Roy Keane’s smirk when the claimed “Keane had played well at the weekend”? He didn’t mean it. He just wanted to say it because they share the same surname and it’s probably the only way Roy gets to hear his name with some praise attached to it nowadays. I applaud Southgate for wanting certain characters in the team ahead of certain reputations but can we please still check whether they are actually any good? I mean, is there anyone out there other than Gareth and his coaching staff who believe for a single second that Michael Keane is a better defender in better form than Fikayo Tomori of Chelsea? The kid must have watched that much unfold and wondered if he could still represent Nigeria - an option that Tammy Abraham saw removed, probably much to his disappointment, when he was thrown to try and save the game late on. It wasn’t just Keane, either - Danny Rose had one of his more enigmatic evenings, and by enigmatic I actually been pretty damn terrible. Is there any reason that Ben Chilwell and him have to rotate? Was it a tactical ploy by Southgate? In Chilwell you have a guy on top form at the moment - Leicester are flying in the league and confidence is high. He’s also got quite a few caps now so should know what to do. Rose plays for Tottenham and was roasted against Southampton, destroyed against Bayern Munich and amply humiliated against Brighton - yet he’ll be OK for England, eh? You can apply similar logic to the right hand side of defence though, to give credit to Kieran Trippier, he has adapted to life at Atletico Madrid quite well - but is he a better pick than Trent Alexander-Arnold? Of course not - TAA

and a bit of dress sense will only get you so far. Managing the press as brilliantly as you do (and you really do) is great. But what I’d really like to see is some tactical nous now, please. You’ve had long enough. And on that note - set-pieces. Here’s an idea - do what even the most basic of football brains were saying after the match. Stick someone on that back post zone to stop them peeling off the back, will you? If I can spot it, if Wrighty can spot and if Lee Dixon can spot it then it is probably quite a simple fix. As I said, England have probably stuck three past Bulgaria and righted many of these wrongs by the time you read this, but still. There’s issues here. Almost as many issues as there appear to be in the World of Wags right now. How much fun was that in the middle of last week? For those of you that have been living under a rock for the past few days, Coleen Rooney once again endorsed the

covering his mate at centre-back (remember Croatia in 2018 if you will), and unless he has got a whirlpool of movement in front of him, cannot slot a pass into the midfield or front line to save his life. We move into midfield, which is something the Czech’s were allowed to do with absolute freedom on Friday night. Jordan Henderson is going to look back on his career and will, somehow, point to a Champions League winners medal as skipper and, even more worryingly, a Premier League winners medal at some point too. He has his good points and, on a good day, the almost counteract all the bad ones. One thing Jordan is not is a defensive midfielder you play when you are looking to keep it tight - you might just about get away with asking him to be creative from there, and what I mean by creative is asking him to try and ping crossfield passes once in a while. Do not stick him in a two and ask him to be

Ngolo Kante, please. And Declan Rice, do you want him back Ireland? I know he is young and I know he is playing OKish for West Ham, but really? Is that all we have now to play in that position? I’d love to see that stats on him for that game but I suspect Roy Keane probably won the ball back as often and he was in the studio. Keano probably had a better pass completion percentage as well, because Rice was possibly the Czech’s most creative player - other than Jordan Pickford. I’ll get accused of being as much of a

- but he did his best work playing as the 10 and threading through superintelligent passes to other people. The problem was, when he actually had the chances to do what we want Harry Kane to be doing, he fluffed them. It’s not just Southgate’s team selection that really needs to be looked at tactically, is this guy ever going to develop?

Once again, I applaud the fact that he wants the team to be more flexible in the way the line up and not be welded to one system for ever more. However, the risk with that is that you get blinded by choice and that seems to be what Southgate is suffering from here. Why did we go there and try to sit in and be tight? I am not suggesting we needed to go and be gung-ho, but it was clear after 20 minutes that the approach wasn’t working yet we didn’t change it to attempt to be more proactive until halftime. Why did it take so long? Why did we even set-up in that way in the first place? Southgate, my dear man, stylish beards

common theory that she is the brains in that relationship by turning all WAGatha Christie (I cannot and will not claim credit for that one, whoever did it first is a genius) and outing Rebekah Vardy’s account as being guilty of selling stories to the S*n behind her back. Please notice the account part of that, otherwise Rooney wasted a lot of lawyers fees. How could Col be so sure? Well, she’d smelt a rat for a while - and no, we are not talking about Wayne. She was convinced someone was doing the dirty on her and no, we are not talking about Wayne. She had an inkling it might have been Rebekah Vardy’s account taking private stories Col was putting on Insta (it’s a clever setting, ask your Nan) and selling them to the tabloids. In a stroke of Rooney genius not seen since Wayne pinged an overhead kick in against City in the derby, Coleen blocked everyone other than Rebekah Vardy’s account and started to place fake news on her account. Said fake news ended up in the papers and Col had her evidence and she proceeded to write the most brilliant crime-scene report which broke social media. Vardy has denied it, or at least tried to palm off the theory that her account was hacked and it wasn’t her - afterall, she is heavily pregnant in case she forgot to mention it. This will rumble on, but has also led me to wonder whether Wayne is actually joining Derby County afterall or whether that was one of the not-so-true stories…

The Celts Club de Golf Presidents’ Day 2019 We had a magnificent turnout of 96 players for the annual Presidents’ tournament at La Serena. As usual we have to congratulate all those who worked to make the day such a success. It is hard to believe that less than a month ago La Serena was under a metre of water. Bruno and his team excelled themselves in having the course and clubhouse almost back to normal. To Jean, Karolina and Paul thank you very much for all your fine endeavours. Wayne and his crew had the course in excellent condition in spite of the floods. To Gloria, Fina and the Vanessas, you always have a warm welcome for our members and this is much appreciated. With the golf completed we then celebrated our Presidents’ dinner and dance at El Prado restaurant in San Miguel. The restaurant have to be thanked for looking after more than one hundred diners at almost the same time providing us with a sumptuous meal. It is no easy task and we know that when we arrive in the restaurant we can leave our members in the capable hands of Juan and his staff. What can we say about our Jackie? She was her usual self, brilliant again. Alfredo, or should we call him Elvis, had members and guests enthralled with the Wonder of You. Camillus and his committee as usual had everything under control and members and guests alike simply turn up on the day and play their golf. Well done Cam, Philip and Terry. Denis our “tesero”, makes life so easy with his control of the accounts especially on such a hectic night, thank you. Thanks to our captain Jim and his lovely wife Enid for their attendance. We had a number of guests from the federation and we

Ruby’s Golf Society This month’s trophy game took us to Bonalba, one of the furthest journey's on our yearly calendar, but the weather was good and the traffic not too bad, as was the course, although we have seen the greens in better condition. We had 24 players and there was a lot of scores returned over 30 points so the day went well. The results were as follows;

best front nine Mike Thomas (20) best back Terry Brooker (19). The silver division winner was Jeff Evans (38), and the gold and overall winner was Walter Miller (38).

Nearest the pins on the par 3's were Michelle Evans who also took the two's pot with a lovely shot into the green which left a very short putt, Jim McCarthy (2) and Chris Waddington. Nearest in two shots was Mike Thomas,

Our next outing is Captains day which is being used to raise funds for the Poppy appeal and is fully booked with 32 players. If anyone wishes to play with us or needs any further information please email rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

Back at O'Briens where the presentation took place Terry Brooker won the football card.

Quesada Bowls Club Report Sponsors: Spanish Life properties, Abbey Wealth management, Ibex insurance, Avalon funerals, Simply Doors, Mosquito screen company After a hectic couple of weeks with the Valencian championships, we got back down to internal bowls and the new league season. Tuesday saw a very good day, as the weekly “bubble” competition held a fun bowls day followed with an evening of merriment in the clubhouse. I think it is fair to say that a good day was had by all. The San Luis Open 2 Ball Trips was played on Saturday/Sunday last. Jacqui Johnston, Harry Johnston and Kevin McKenna (a former Quesada player) won the event, beating Keith Jones, Sabrina Marks and June Jones in the final by 8 shots to 7. Well done to them. The winter league is in its second week and we travelled to San Miguel. Unfortunately it was not a great day for Quesada, who only managed 4 points,

winning on two rinks. We also lost in the Berleen trophy. Good luck next time. This week also saw the opening fixtures in the Southern league. Swans visited Vistabella, where they managed to win on all rinks, getting the maximum 14 points. Excellent result. Swallows hosted Mazarron miners. Quesada came out on top here also. They also got maximum points winning on all rinks. Another excellent result. All in all a good week for Quesada bowls. Long may it continue. Don’t forget we still have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive running throughout the summer. It’s open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk Jim Donnelly

Thompson 38, Bev Ellender 34 and Tony Edwards 33. 4, Tony Stafford 38, Tony Woodward 35 and Mark Knight 35. Gross was won by Camillus Fitzpatrick 34. Runner-up Ian Howie 39 and the winner of the Presidents’ Prize for 2019 also with 39 Catherine Bennett. Well done to the winners and to all those who participated on the day and attended the evening meal. Next week we celebrate the final match of the International League for 2019 at Font de Llop. The league continues to go from strength to strength and we are looking for teams to compete in the 2020 league. Courses on the list for next year include, Villaitana, Alicante, Font de Llop and El Saler. All for the sum of 230 euro per team of 8 players, great value indeed. If you want information on entering a team or joining The Celts send an email to johnobrienalicante@gmail.com.

Monte Mugged Bigastro Escape With The Points Team:- Carlos, Fernando, Santos, Diego, Perez, Gonzalo, Maccan, Adrian, Manuel, Alex, Manu.

chances to draw level, but on the whole, Monte lacked the application that they showed last week against Crevillente.

Sub’s:- Morante, German, Raul, Luis, Manuel Jose.

The half petered out with Bigastro grimly holding on to their slender lead without too much trouble.

A game that commenced with fireworks off the pitch and just as explosively, on the pitch, had more cards on display than Clinton's, also ended with a shock loss for leaders CD Montesinos at Saturday's evening kick off at the “Cauldron”. As early as the second minute, a deliberate hand ball in the Monte area gifted a pacey Bigastro side the lead. Keeper Carlos got a firm hand to the strike, but was unable to stop the squirming ball creeping over the line. Critically, that single goal was to remain an albatross around Monte's neck for the rest of the game. The half subsequently developed into an overly feisty affair, with Bigastro taking every opportunity, egged on by a boisterous bench, to niggle and nip at any Montesinos player who dared to have the ball, whilst loudly complaining if one of their own simply fell over. A card happy referee added to the dismal (from a footballing perspective) game, which Monte huffed and puffed to get back into, to little avail. There were several half

HT: CD Montesinos 0-1 CF Bigastro

I would have liked to have written that the game improved in the second period, but, Bigastro continued where they left off, applying the full range of football's “dark arts”: persistent fouling, timewasting; complaining about every decision (even the ones that went in their favour); harassing and haranguing the beleaguered referee (who had, by now, lost most of his remaining authority over the game); and other assorted misdemeanours, almost anything to prevent a football match from breaking out.

Monte for their part, tried doggedly to break down the opposition's stubborn resistance and flagrant rule-stretching and even when, later in the second half, Bigastro were inevitably reduced to 10 then 9 men via the shower of yellow and red cards headed their way, they couldn't overcome a team that had simply “parked the bus” and showed only vague attacking intent. When Bigastro did have the ball, they simply ran around waiting for a Montesinos player to get close enough so that they could theatrically fall over and claim the foul. All rather pathetic and certainly not my definition of football. A game that started with a bang pretty much ended with a whimper and Monte reluctantly gave up the early league top spot against a side who will do well to finish any game they play with their regulation starting XI still on the pitch. Monte will no doubt look forward next to opposition that play football as it should be played.
