Brexit: The final countdown? B

ritons in Spain, and across the EU, watched closely on Saturday as Boris Johnson took his EU ‘deal’ to the House of Commons for approval. It was supposed to be Johnson’s big

moment, a chance to get a Brexit deal agreed and to succeed where Theresa May had failed three times. The deal was approved by the EU on Friday and dominated the day’s headlines in

advance of Saturday’s vote by MPs. However, what was dubbed ‘Super Saturday’ – the first Saturday sitting of parliament in almost four decades, turned out to be yet another delay. MPs

voted to postpone the so called ‘crunch vote’ on Johnson’s Brexit deal (by 322 to 306) which forced the PM to seek another extension from the EU. An amendment, tabled by Sir Oliver Letwin, was put forward to prevent an "accidental" no-deal exit. Sir Letwin said his move was an "insurance mechanism" to ensure that the UK did "not crash out with no-deal". Continued on page 4

4 year old falls down sewer A four year old boy fell through a manhole and into a sewer in Alicante this weekend. Little Áxel was with his family on Saturday when the near tragedy struck – his father David said that for a moment, they feared that Áxel would meet the same fate as Julen who perished after falling down a borehole in Málaga – a story that gripped the nation as rescue teams worked around the clock to try and save the life of the child, but to no avail. This latest incident occurred at around 1pm on Saturday when four year old Áxel stepped on a manhole cover while walking. The manhole cover gave way and the boy fell through, managing to

hang on with his arms before his father pulled him free. Luckily, he managed to escape with just scrapes. The family had been at the beach where Áxel was enjoying the playground. David said his son was walking about six metres in front of him when he stepped on the cover, which appeared to be displaced by a few centimetres and badly damaged by rust. The cover skewed to the side and Áxel fell down the hole. He managed to hang on with his arms while his body dangled over the water filled pipe below. His father lunged forward and managed to pull him free. After notifying the Local Police,

the area surrounding the sewer was cordoned off and remained as such throughout Sunday. The boy's father took him to the nearest health centre, where they found that he had luckily only suffered scrapes to his sides and armpits. Dad David explained that “it has been a tremendous scare. It was just seconds before I was able to pull him out of the hole, but I can assure you that I would not wish it on anyone. For a moment I thought about the case of the boy from Malaga who died when he fell through a hole.” David criticised the poor state of the manhole cover, which is located right in the pedestrian access to the beach.

Casting call Hit Channel 4 show Sun, Sea And Selling Houses is looking for British expats on Spain’s Costa Blanca for new series. The popular show is returning to Spain and needs a new cast of home buyers. The programme follows British estate agents hoping to find British expats their dream home in the sun. So, if you are currently house hunting in Alicante or

Almeria then organisers of the show’s fourth season, Ricochet, would love to hear from you. “We’re especially looking for people who are house hunting in October, November and December,” a spokesperson announced. “Whether their budget is €50,000 or €5 million, or the house is a holiday home or a permanent one, we would love to

hear from them. “It’s a really lighthearted, fun show. “Each episode focuses on buyers in Almeria and Alicante and participants get to view three houses and hopefully find their dream home.” Those interested should email spain@ricochet.co.uk or call 01273032190.

Orihuela opens office for those claiming state flood aid The Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde and the Councillor for Citizen Participation, Mayte Sánchez have given details on the procedure for processing state aid for people affected by the September floods. Orihuela has opened an information office in the Prop building, to allow those affected by the DANA to educate themselves on the types of aid available and follow the correct protocol. After receiving the information on the Royal Decree last Monday, the local government will provide all the information to those affected and explain how the state aid covers different needs and which is most appropriate and relevant. • Aid for death and disability: with a maximum of 18,000 euros. • Aid for damage to homes and appliances: these grants are divided into four types: • Total destruction of the house: maximum 15,120 euros. • Structural damage of the house: 50 percent maximum up to 10,320 euros. • Non-structural housing damage: € 50 maximum up to € 5,160. • Household damage: maximum 2,180 euros. • Aid for industrial and commercial establishments: 7 percent subsidy not covered by the Insurance Consortium, for a maximum of 9,224 euros. • Aid to local corporations: they cover 100 percent of the

expenses during the emergency (evacuation, accommodation, food, sludge removal, cleaning of roads and public environments). As for repair works, infrastructure, equipment, facilities and services, these grants cover 50 percent. The Councillor for Emergencies also explained that the order related to aid for agricultural and livestock production and those aimed at agricultural and livestock farms, as well as information on tax benefits will be published shortly. Those submitting applications need to do so by 22nd November as this is the maximum period for submitting applications for state aid.

Help at hand

Municipal offices The Councillor for Citizen Participation said: “In addition to setting up an office for the victims in the Prop building, we have also reinforced the opening hours and the staff numbers in the municipal offices already active in the affected districts . The hours of the new office will be from 3.30pm to 8.30pm and it is necessary to make an appointment by phone on: 672 22 13 90. Councillor Sanchez concluded: "We have made a great effort to launch this service of attention and information to provide people with the necessary means and in order to help people who have suffered so much damage during the floods."

degrees and still pleasant for bathing, but far from the 27 degrees of early September. From today and until Friday a cold air pocket will travel across the Mediterranean coast and could lead to days of heavy rains across the eastern peninsula. Today and tomorrow (Wednesday 23rd) are forecast to be the worst in terms of rainfall. Although experts are confident that the area will not experience a storm like the one in September, they are mindful that we are still in the high season and at risk from torrential rains. "As soon as we were able, we have been tracking the location and levels of rainfall. It is important to monitor the situation and respond to alerts that both AEMET and Emergencies of the Generalitat Valenciana can make public," says Jorge Olcina , director of the Laboratory of Climatology of the UA.

Mayor to meet Torrevieja West residents

The formation of a new gota fria (cold drop) or DANA across the Mediterranean from today (Tuesday 22nd) will cause the first three days of the week to be especially rainy throughout the province, although not with the intensity of the storm that wreaked chaos and destruction across the Vega Baja in the middle of September. The prediction models from the State Meteorological Agency and from the Climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante both anticipate heavy downpours but also hedge their bets slightly, explaining that these situations cannot be predicted accurately too far advance. It will rain, but hopefully with less intensity due to the fact that the sea conditions are different. The temperature of the water has dropped and as it moves towards November the risk of storms being as strong as September or early October decreases. The sea is at 24

Continued from page 1 Now, the Letwin amendment means that the "meaningful vote" needed to approve Johnson's Brexit deal can only happen once the legislation required to leave the EU - the Withdrawal Agreement Bill - has passed through parliament. The delay is no doubt

damage the interests of the UK and the EU,” he wrote. “We must bring this process to a conclusion so that we can move to the next phase.” What does this mean now? From a legal perspective, Boris Johnson has now complied with the Benn Act, his government

humiliating for the PM, but it appears that trust is so low that voting MPs felt the need to delay approval of Johnson’s deal until first the legislation underpinning the deal itself can be passed. After the delay was inevitable, Boris Johnson wrote a letter to the EU asking for an extension – something he repeatedly said that he would not do – along with another letter to EU leaders making it clear that he himself did not want any further delay. “A further extension would

has triggered an extension request and the EU is now considering that request. Halloween deadline For now though, Brexit is once again out of the prime minister's control. Getting his deal approved by the Halloween deadline is now more complicated than ever. Meanwhile, a no-deal option is off the table unless the EU itself decides to move to a no-deal scenario. Getting Johnson’s deal passed

is now more complicated than ever because MPs can now attempt to amend the Withdrawal Agreement Bill in order to tweak the deal by, for example, attaching a customs union amendment. If Johnson can persuade more MPs to support his deal, he might be able to get it over the line but the price of new support could be amendments to the deal that neither Johnson nor his supporters may want. In terms of a no-deal exit, the EU have indicated they will give the prime minister time to pass this latest deal, with an official saying on Saturday night that it would take a “few days” for the EU to react. It might be that the EU will wait to see if Johnson can pass his Brexit deal in the days remaining before the 31 October deadline and perhaps, call an emergency summit. Saturday’s events do not mean that Johnson’s deal is dead in the water. MPs reconvened yesterday (Monday) and a meaningful vote could be held today (Tuesday).

Repairs at La Mata Beach Torrevieja’s the Councillor for Beaches, has announced that the Provincial Coastal Service will soon begin repair work on areas of La Mata beach damaged by recent flooding which occurred a month ago across the Vega Baja.

Compromís criticise works delay Opposition party Los VerdesCompromís has demanded that works to improve the N332 as it passes through Torrevieja be accelerated in order to alleviate traffic problems suffered by local motorists. It also called on the lifting of the toll on the AP-7 in order to free up the busy dual carriageway as it passes from Torrevieja to Orihuela Costa. Spokesperson for Los VerdesCompromís Carmen Morate was joined by Senator Carles Mulet who said that the project deadlines have already been breached and that the situation is the fault of “those who...have become pawns of their respective parties, forgetting the people they represent.” The senator has also criticised the institutional paralysis, claiming that many of the region’s problems “remain unresolved” such as the lack of rail service in Torrevieja.

Night of the Dead Orihuela The Councilor for Culture, Mar Ezcurra, has presented the third edition of La Noche de las Ánimas to be held in the Historic District of Orihuela on Halloween. “Before Halloween became fashionable, in our country the Night of the Dead was already celebrated with important cultural activities. It was the tradition that night to tell family stories about the dead, spirits and strange apparitions. Therefore, from the Department of Culture we want to resume the cultural activity related to that night and bring to the street the best of literature, theatre and music and unite that with our heritage and our customs,” explained the Councillor. So on this night, 31st October, in the historic centre of Orihuela, there will be an unreal atmosphere, created by special lighting that will illuminate the heritage of the city and to add to the supernatural feel there will be a night of theatrical performances of works by top authors of National and international literature such as Emilia Pardo Bazán, Edgar Allan Poe or José Zorrilla, highlighting the literary richness related to that night and presented by Lunatando Teatro. The Band of the Professional Conservatory of Orihuela, with more than ninety musicians, will take a musical tour through the most relevant and representative compositions that are associated with the Night of the Dead with a concert entitles "Wandering souls", which will take place in the Via Manuel square. The activities will begin at 11pm and carry on until 1am and the performances will take place in several locations. Each

performance will be repeated throughout the night so that each person can experience and enjoy the the tour. In the Ramón Sijé square, the performance of “La Resucitada” by Emilia Pardo Bazán will take place; In the Cloister of the Cathedral we can see the final scene of “D. Juan Tenorio ”, from Zorrilla; In the Plaza del Salvador, “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe will be represented and at the door of the City Council of Orihuela there will be the representation of “The Heart Betrayer”, by Edgar Allan Poe.

Spooky goings-on

In addition to these performances, during this spooky tour all visitors will meet the typical characters of the Night of the Dead, spirits, ghouls, witches, burials, funeral processions and endless surprises that will celebrate this special eve . "It's about combining our rich heritage with literature and music, taking advantage of a secular tradition such as the celebration of the night of the dead and All Saints' Day," concluded Mar Ezcurra.

Halloween parade The Department of Youth, with the collaboration of the association of neighbours of La Florida and the Ampas of the schools Playas de Orihuela, Romualdo Ballester, Los Dolses and Amanecer, will make their traditional Halloween Parade. This will begin at 6.30pm in the urbanisation of La Florida and will feature music, children's entertainment, workshops, face painting and a terrifying performance!

Minister demands honesty over Mar Menor Spain’s Minister for Ecological Transition has demanded answers from the Regional Government of Murcia over the ‘environmental emergency’ at the region’s unique inland sea, the Mar Menor. Teresa Ribera has called for a formal investigation into the ‘origin’ of the catastrophe, which killed thousands of fish. She stated that agricultural ‘bad practices’ must end, as she met with the environmental organisation, ANSE (Asociacion de Naturalistas del Sureste). Minister Ribera stated that the death of so many fish is, “an obvious example of what happens when we look elsewhere.” In contrast the Murcian Government attributed the fish deaths to September’s gota fria and the discharge of 60 cubic hectometres of salt water into the lagoon following the floods. Fernando Lopez Miras, president of Murcia, warned, ‘there are no magic solutions.’ He added: “I have come to listen to all parties, mayors, fishermen, farmers,

ecologists, neighbors and scientists.” Minister Ribera stated that in order to reverse the situation, ‘you have to be responsible and honest, and look at long term improvements.’ The Spanish Government’s Zero Discharge plan, published just before the gota fria, highlighted the issue of poisons and contaminants in the Mar Menor. Local campaigners immediately questioned the priorities in the plan, and who should control and monitor spending. Jorge Luis Enriquez is a ‘Responsible Technician in the Autonomous Community of Murcia’, and works with Briton Bill Hulse on raising issues about flood protection and the poisoning of the Mar Menor. He insisted, “The control of spending and the control of politicians must be considered, there are many actions proposed and a huge quantity of money for the implementation – it has to be monitored.”

New sports equipment The Councilor for Sports, Víctor Bernabéu, has presented the new sports equipment that he received from the Department of Clequali SL, winner of the sports services contract of the City Council of Orihuela, corresponding to the 2019/2020 season, and therefore complying with the terms of the contract with this donation for the second consecutive year. Bernabéu stressed that this equipment "serves to alleviate the numerous losses of equipment that have been recorded at the municipal sports facilities after the

Much-needed donation

damage caused by DANA, so it is good news for the Department to have this new sports equipment donated as these are items thay would have had to be replaced out of the departmental budget”. With this latest donation, the company has provided new material resources for the various municipal sports programs; influenced this season by the most relevant needs that include training and competition equipment for school sports and teams for basketball, football, tennis, athletics and rhythmic gymnastics;

as well as material for mobility skills for multisport and flotation aids for aquatic activities. Bernabéu also recalled that “the improvements provided by Clequali, not only consist of sports equipment, but, over the first three years of the contract, they also include tools, machinery, cleaning products and pool maintenance, ICT ´s and computer systems, as well as time for collaboration in events, programs and activities organised by the Department of Sports. ”

Irregular immigration reduced The Spanish executive has reached its goal of reducing irregular immigration by half, a decision that was taken in January after arrivals in 2018 reached a record 64,298 people. The latest official data shows 24,159 undocumented arrivals, marking the first time since 2010 that there has been such a steep drop in immigration by land and sea. This decrease is largely owed to renewed efforts by Morocco to stop migrants from departing from its coastline. “The preventive efforts by Moroccan authorities continue to be effective, and they are key to understanding the strong reduction in arrivals in Spain during 2019,” said the European Commission in an internal report to which EL PAÍS has had access. Those efforts include, among other things, preventing thousands of departures by land and the rescue of 10,700 migrants who were returned to Moroccan territory, adds the report. Thanks to this assistance, in just a few months Spain has gone from being the main Mediterranean route for irregular immigration to showcasing itself as a role model in Europe. Spain and its

European partners want to reinforce cooperation with Morocco, which has been rewarded diplomatically and financially with aid worth €180 million. Immigrant deaths at sea have not dropped by as much. So far this year, 317 people have drowned or disappeared in the Strait of Gibraltar and the westernmost portion of the Mediterranean as they attempted to reach Spain, a 42% drop from 2018. One out of every 100 migrants continues to die at sea. In 2018, record arrivals put irregular immigration at the top of the political agenda. Migratory pressure had been increasing since 2017, but the opposition claimed there was a push effect because of the Socialist (PSOE) administration’s decision to take in humanitarian

vessels that had been rejected by Malta and Italy, such as the Aquarius NGO vessel. Since then, the caretaker government of Socialist Party (PSOE) Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has adopted tougher measures, including pushback policies at the border between Morocco and the Spanish exclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and preventing NGOrun humanitarian ships from sailing to the central Mediterranean. While sea arrivals are more visible, a majority of immigrants arrive by air. Although it is impossible to know how many people on tourist visas extend their stay, asylum requests have ballooned to 82,000 so far this year, a figure that is largely due to Venezuelans and Colombians who make up 32% and 23% of asylum seekers, respectively.

Electric scooter pavement fines Police in Alicante will have powers to fine electric scooter riders up to €500 for riding without a helmet or using city pavements, according to measures approved this week. Alicante’s Town Hall agreed on Tuesday to restrict scooter speed limits to 30 km/h, enforce use of brakes, lights, bells and reflectors, while riders must be over 16 and take out insurance. Measures ratified during the council meeting include restricting the machines

to bike lanes, cycle-track roads and 30km/h speed-restricted roads in the capital city of Alicante province. Use of a mobile phone is also banned. The above measures will incur fines up to €100 for mild indiscretions, with serious offences sanctioned up to €500. Alicante’s mayor of Mobility and Traffic, José Ramón González, said the new municipal regulations will ‘promote road safety’. The proposals, which may adapt to

nationwide regulations expected soon from Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), are expected to become law in 2020.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

A

t the end of last week, optimism over a possible new Brexit deal saw the pound make gains. This week, sterling mostly continued to push higher, though the trajectory was a little less dramatic. The pound had its best two days percentage-wise since before the EU referendum in the latter half of last week. Revived Brexit deal hopes pushed sterling to $1.25 on Friday following a 1.9% on Thursday. This week, the pound gathered momentum following the Queen’s Speech and the presentation of a new deal, including an alternative to the controversial Irish backstop that had proved such a sticking point. At the beginning of the week, the pound made gains of a quarter of a cent from both the euro and the US dollar. Investors appeared to be pricing in another delay and pricing out a no-deal Brexit as the deal was presented to the EU. While there has been much greater optimism this week that has benefited the pound, there have been a few challenges along the way. On Tuesday, sterling led the field, adding an average of 1.3% but a Bloomberg report suggesting that a deal was impossible halted those gains midweek. As the crucial EU Summit began, the pound soared against the euro and dollar following statements from both UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker that a Brexit deal has been agreed. Optimism has not been unbridled, however. The DUP’s refusal to back the deal means that the PM may have similar challenges regarding parliamentary mathematics as his

predecessor, and while it has been taking fewer headlines, the deal must also pass through the EU parliament before it can be agreed. While Brexit undoubtedly dominated investors’ thoughts, progress in the US-China trade war and a possible easing of tensions also proved positive for sterling. In addition, GDP expanded by 0.3% in the three months to August. The NIESR estimated that the economy grew by 0.5% in the third quarter and that it will expand another 0.3% in Q4 and the CPI put inflation at 1.7%. much may depend on the outcome of the coming weekend; Bank of England Governor Mark Carney warned of the consequences of a no-deal Brexit for the UK economy, and while it had little impact on the pound this week, those words may come back to haunt sterling if the deal is not approved by parliament over the weekend. Brexit progress also assisted the euro this week as the EUR/USD rate rose. Investors saw an easing of Brexit-related risks and the break above 1.11 meant that the euro had entered more bullish territory. The announcement of the deal solidified gains made earlier in the week and led to the exchange rate rising to 1.1117. As enthusiasm for the Brexit deal swept the markets, ZEW's surveys of economic sentiment in Germany and Euroland "recorded a very slight decrease" which did not affect the euro. The results had been largely expected, and there was similar apathy over the consumer price index data which put inflation at 0.3% in Italy and 0.8% in the euro zone.

Guardamar Town Hall takes responsibility for parks New .to a new private supplier. Instead most of the service will be carried out by the municipal company that already handles garbage collection and beach cleaning, Gesnet. The decision has the unanimous approval of the plenary meeting with the votes of the majority government of the PSOE, and the opposition of PP, Cs and Esquerra. Mayor José Luis Sáez (PSOE) explained that the conservation

of parks and gardens was also included among the duties of the municipal company. Until now, the municipal brigades had been responsible for these jobs. These labourers will continue to perform maintenance but the municipal government has decided that much of the new green areas, which have increased in recent years be assumed by Gesnet (Gestió Municipal Neteja). It is an option of direct management,

which is not popular in the municipalities of the Vega Baja, and even less so for one of more than ten thousand people. Sáez defended the decision by pointing out that direct management allows more control of public spending and day-to-day service. In addition, the municipality will save 6 percent of the payment for the industrial benefit that entails delivering the public benefit to a supplier, and

other inconveniences, such as bidding procedures, which can be eternalised between preparation of specifications, offers, assessments, resources of companies or their cost overruns and extension of contracts. The cost for the municipal coffers of this commission to Gesnet has been quantified at 89,500 euros -70,000 in personnel costs- for the second half of this year, that is, between 1st July and 31st December.

composters for Albatera school The Councillor for Public Services, Juanjo Fuentes and the Councillor for Education, José Antonio Berná have delivered three composters to the IES Antonio Serna, in order to promote interest in recycling and environmental care among young people in the town of Albatera . They met with the schools director, Pedro Alcaraz , as well as with the students of 2nd Baccalaureate responsible for the implementation of this initiative. José Antonio Berná explained that "this facility is within the recycling and environmental care project of the City of Albatera ". With these three composters "you can recycle all the organic matter and contribute to the education of the students and also improve the environment." He said that this initiative will be developed in all schools in the town and in the coming weeks all schools will receive composters. The students will be given recycling lessons to promote this habit from an educational perspective. The Councillor for Public Services, Juanjo Fuentes pointed out that the composters have several benefits but the main one is that “between 40 and 50 percent of what is deposited in the waste container is organic waste, and we are going towards a circular economy, reuse and recycle and the best we can do with organic waste is compost, which can then be used in the urban garden of the school.”

Crime warning Despite the relatively low crime rate in this region, the Costa Blanca People is often made aware of crime trends, especially in terms of crimes targeting the expat community. Two such warnings were submitted by readers this week which we felt

escaped. The police have been informed of all these incidents. The President of the Torrevieja West Neighbourhood Watch has asked the for extra police patrols as a matter of urgency and the Mayor and police have been invited to attend the next

important to share as a warning. One reader told us, “I thought you might be interested to know there has been a spate of breakins in the La Siesta area recently with at least seven properties burgled during the night. At one property the three thieves were interrupted when the owners arrived back home. The masked thieves brandished pistols and

neighbourhood watch meeting on the 28th October at Casa Ventura.” Another warning centred on distraction crime which was a major problem on the southern Costa Blanca many years ago but appears to resurface from time to time. A local man was shopping at a supermarket in Torrevieja when he returned to the car park

to find his driver’s side tyre flat. When he was changing the tyre, thieves stole his wife’s bag (and in fact, had probably inflicted the damage in the first place in order to do so). The advice, as always, is to remain vigilant and be aware that someone might be distracting your attention in order to steal from you. At home, always keep windows closed at night and if you are out (even if you have security grilles, thieves have been known to use fishing rods to steal keys and other valuables). If you have an alarm, always make use of it and above all, if you are a victim of crime, always report it to police. It might seem that there is no point in going through the motions of a ‘denuncia’ or report, especially if what has been taken is of little value, but reporting crime allows the police to discover potential links in incidents or cases and apprehend those responsible. A number of small crimes or break ins reported from a specific area allow the police to identify potential gang activity and in some cases, send extra patrols to survey the problem area.

Do you know how your pension is invested? How to understand your retirement savings and pull them together to work harder • Consolidating your old pensions into one easyto manage pension can cut costs • A Sipp is a good option for those looking to broaden their investment choices

D

o you have an old workplace pension but haven't a clue about how your money is invested or have old pensions that you've lost track of? If so, you're not alone. The responsibility to save for retirement is increasingly falling to individuals, but many people struggle to connect with how their workplace pension is performing, or what happened to old pots. Most people worked for a number of different employers over the course of their careers and, as a result, end up with several different pension pots. However, left in an old employer's pension scheme, your money is at risk from high charges and poor performance. An obvious remedy to this is to consolidate your old pensions into one easy‐to‐manage pension. Many people therefore choose to open a self‐invested personal pension ‐ a Sipp ‐ that offers them a much wider choice of funds and other investment options. Put simply, Sipps are a type of do‐it‐yourself private pension that allow savers to cherry pick from thousands of investments to create a portfolio tailored to their individual appetite for risk and investment objectives. This can include funds, investment trusts and shares. Bear in mind that you'll be responsible for making your own investment decisions and managing your portfolio which is by no means an easy feat. If you’re not comfortable tackling big decisions on your own, then this is where Seagate can help you.

Crazy patio ideas... Crochet your own sun awning… There is a street in Alhama, Andalucia, which creates shade by hanging crocheted mats between the houses. Essentially, they use the granny square technique, so it wouldn’t be difficult. If you google ‘crocheting with plastic’ you’ll discovered a whole world of crocheting with recycled strips of plastic bags. It’s known as ‘plarn’ and is easy to make yourself.

pretty pastels. This could be good in a growing garden as well as a patio as it also gives the plants lots of support. Improve pot drainage with a pretty stand… Pot stands improve drainage. Sometimes they are too effective, and the pots dry out. But if you have plants like pelargoniums or succulents, then a pretty pot stand will be prevent their roots from sitting in water. And so much more attractive than pot feet. Paint a ‘skirting board’ outside your house as well as inside… This is the sort of idea that works really well and you can see the use of colour outside many Spanish houses. It’s both exuberant and controlled – colour is part of the architecture. Spray paint your solar lights… If you don’t like the tinge to the solar lights you’ve bought then spray-paint the lights yellow, blue or white to suit your tastes.

Or hang brightly coloured parasols… In some Spanish streets they use brightly coloured umbrellas/parasols in netting to create shade. Not the most resilient of treatments. There are quite a few pictures on Pinterest showing streets in Spain and Portugal with this easy to copy idea.

Pots on walls – don’t forget safety and drainage If you have a pot on a high wall, it may be blown off (onto someone’s head). One solution is to cement the pot onto the wall, but that will prevent it from draining. A solution to this it to drill a hole in the side of the pot, and add a small drain.

Edge your border with car tyres… Recycle car tyres as border edging and if you want to jazz it up than paint them in

Pots on walls instead of pictures… We love the Spanish use of pots on walls, especially as the pots themselves

are often so beautiful. This is something that could work elsewhere, especially as ‘indoor gardens’ and houseplants are now gaining such popularity. Hang a curtain over your front door… This is a great ‘hot countries’ idea. Many a front door gets baked by the morning sun, and the paint cracks within months of re-painting. Many traditional Spanish houses have fittings for a curtain rail just above the front door on the outside of the house and are easy to add if yours doesn’t. Effective garden ideas: a screen with large holes in it… To divide areas or even terraces shared with neighbours. In Spain many garden screens are thick walls with large window holes cut in it. Once again, this seems quite counter-intuitive as garden ideas go – isn’t the point of a screen to prevent you from seeing anything? But holes mean that wind is broken up, and it also lets light in. Somehow these terraces feel completely private – it must be something about the thickness of the wall and the lavish planting. Paint fencing and gates in contrasting colours… The Spanish are much bolder about exterior paint colours. Expats would be much more likely to paint gates and fencing all one colour, often either black or white. However, having fun with colours can really bring your patio or garden to life and give it a real Spanish feel.

It is renowned for it thermal complex of spas and has a prestigious reputation in health tourism at national and international level, both for its

hot springs and extensive hydrothermal facilities located on the site of a 2,500 year old medicinal mineral water spring. The day will begin with a morning enjoying the delights of the spa itself, followed by lunch at the complex. In afternoon will see the group be treated to an exclusive tour of

Bari

The capital of the Puglia region and the Province of Bari, after Naples, Bari, with a population of just over 326,000 people is the second largest city on the southern part of the talian mainland. Another 275,000 people live in the metropolitan area, but the area is more contained than other large cities and therefore, does not present as much disconcerting sprawl. Situated on the Adriatic Coast, the city is a major industrial city in Southern Italy, and has been a major commercial, fishing and ferry port for centuries. First settled by the Peuceti an ancient Italic tribe, the area has been successively dominated by Greek colonists, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, the Aragons, the Angevins, the Holy Roman Empire, then the Bourbons under Napoleon. It was incorporated into the modern country of Italy in 1861. Bari has three distinct parts: "old town" on a peninsula to the north , the Murattianno to the south, and the central area, which is a major shopping and office zone, in the middle area. The old town north of the city has a collection of ancient buildings including the substantial Basilica of San Nicola (built in 1087 AD), done in the Palatine style, the Cathedral of San Sabino (built between 1035-1171 AD) and the Swabian - or Norman Castle, actually built by Frederik II, the Holy Roman Emperor, on the ruins of a Norman castle. Notwithstanding the tone set by the dominant religious architecture, a number of trendy restaurants and nightclubs have sprung-up to foster a very vibrant nightlife. The most dominating building in old town is the the Cattedrale di Baria (San Sabino) around which are clustered four major piazzi - Piazza Odegitria, Piazza San Sabino, Piazza Bisanzio and Piazza Rainaldo. Emanating from these piazzi is a network of narrow streets and alleys, on which one finds more churches and other sacred buildings interspersed amongst the many shops, cafes and restaurants. Proceeding along the Street of the Crusades (Strada delle Crociate) toward the "new" city's busy heart, one encounters the charming Chiesa di San Marco, which was the gravitational center for a colony of Venetian merchants who settled there in Middle Ages. The city's busy modern heart, originally laid out

on a grid plan in the 1700s experienced rapid growth in the the 1960s and 1970s features commercial offices, but also some of Bari's finest shops, mostly along the Via Argiro and Via Sparano. The most important piazza in the area is the Piazza Maggiore, on the edge of which sits a major government building, the Palazzo di Citta. A number of Baroque churches with impressive interiors, such as the Chiesa di Santa Chiara and Chiesa di San Gaetano were also built. Ever newer areas, with the usual glass clad office towers spread further inland from this area. The Corso Vitorio Emanuel follows the waterfront to the Murattianno area (named after Joachim Murat, King of Naples from 1808-1815) further south. The harbor here is fronted by a long promenade where one can while-away the hours with a good stroll, or even a jog. A number of yacht harbors snuggle the wall, to provide the merely rich and the immensely wealth with places to tie-up for a bit of onshore fun, shopping or business. Running parallel and sometimes on the promenade is a part of the ancient medieval wall, the Muraglia, that at one time surrounded the City. Another imposing building, 20th Century building can be found here, the Teatro Margherita, done in the Art Nouveau style. Also of interest, the Palazzo dell' Acquedotto and the Palazzo Ateneo, home to the University. During its long history, Bari's fortunes have waxed and waned, going through periods of immense prosperity followed by periods of crushing poverty and despair. During the mid-20th century, it enjoyed growth and prosperity, but today, as Italians adjust to membership in the European Union and global competition, there is a certain feeling of declining spirits. Like Pescara in Abruzzo and Ancona in The Marches, Bari is a city with a chaotic modern tempo, and an often scruffy industrial appearance, especially at various points along the waterfront and on the spreading outskirts of the city. At first it is tough for travelers and tourists to like. But, not too far below it's rough surfaces is a Bari, surprisingly sophisticated, and well worth taking the time to discover over the course of a few days.

My friend bailed on me After being diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, I am undergoing chemo and radiation. My family has been very supportive, along with friends, however my closest friend has hardly contacted me after I told her of my condition. I was totally there for her when she lost her husband several years ago, but she has barely sent two texts to me, or has come to visit. I was in hospital on a couple of occasions because I reacted badly to the treatment, and everyone I knew came to visit, except her, even though she literally lives a stone’s throw from the hospital. Another of my friend's sees her around, and says she seems fine. When asked why she hadn’t visited me, she said ‘she’d been busy’. I can’t understand it, and am very hurt. I’ve stopped texting her because I don’t get a response. My family and other friends have told me not to bother with her again, and it’s good advice I know, but I am still feeling very let down. I can understand how you must feel, and I don’t want to make excuses, however some people can’t cope in situations like this. It’s the fight or flight reaction. I wonder how her husband died? Was it cancer too? Perhaps it was reopening old wounds for her and she simply stuck her head in the ground. Either way, it’s bad form I agree. None of us knows what to do for the best at times like these, because we are not sure what the patient wants, but communicating and staying in touch is vital. Concentrate on the people who care about you. You have too much on your plate to worry. Cancer makes you look at your priorities and maybe this friend should not be a priority. Once you are through the treatment and feeling stronger, you may want to tackle her about it, but for now, put yourself first. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. Growing street violence in Catalonia Following unrest in several Catalan cities over the sentencing of nine secessionist leaders, the Spanish government issued a statement pointing at “coordinated groups that are using street violence to break the social harmony in Catalonia.” Caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, of the Socialist Party (PSOE), asked the three main opposition leaders to meet with him to discuss a coordinated response to the escalating events. Pablo Casado of the Popular Party (PP) Albert Rivera of Ciudadanos (Citizens) and Pablo Iglesias of Unidas Podemos will meet with Sánchez individually. The country is facing a repeat general election on 10th November. The Catalan premier, Quim Torra, is also meeting with some of his top aides this morning to discuss the events, which resulted in 51 arrests and left 125 people injured, 72 of them police officers, according to Catalan health services. Arrests were made in Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Sabadell after protesters lit fires and erected makeshift barricades on the streets of major Catalan cities to protest the Supreme Court ruling that handed down prison terms to

21

CostaBlancaPeople 22nd - 28th October 2019

leaders of the illegal breakaway bid of 2017. These nine leaders have condemned the recent violence in a Twitter message. While a grassroots proindependence organisation called Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) had called for sit-ins outside the Spanish government’s delegations across Catalonia, several hundred demonstrators turned the peaceful protests into street battles, setting fire to trash containers, erecting barricades and hurling objects at riot officers from the national and Catalan law enforcement agencies, who responded with baton and rubber bullet charges. The disturbances were particularly serious in Barcelona, where around 40,000 people had congregated according to local police estimates. They followed an earlier day of protesting last week, when thousands of independence supporters blocked access routes to Josep Tarradelles-El Prat airport, causing over 100 flight cancellations. The Committees to Defend the Republic (CDR), a grassroots network that advocates direct action, has already described these events as “Rosa de foc”, or “rose of fire,” the name given to the city of Barcelona during the so-called Tragic Week of late

July 1909, where violent confrontations between the Spanish army and working classes, who were against the calling-up of reserve troops to fight in Morocco, resulted in around 80 deaths in street clashes. Law activation Pablo Casado, the leaders of the main opposition Popular Party (PP) asked Sánchez to activate the National Security Law in Catalonia, a piece of legislation that lets “the relevant authorities contribute the necessary human and material resources” to maintain public order. “In light of the violent disturbances increasing the tension in Catalonia, Sánchez must activate the National Security Law so that no police agency is subject to instructions from separatists and to protect its integrity. It is urgent that we guarantee security and public order,” wrote Casado on Twitter. The executive has already said that it will only take measures if the Catalan police is not doing its job, which it feels is not the case right now. The Mossos’ actions have been questioned in the past in connection with October 1, 2017 when the unauthorised independence referendum took place.

Help for businesses affected by Thomas Cook collapse

Credit schemes of up to €700 million have been approved to help soften the blow to Spain's tourism industry following the Thomas Cook collapse in September. The government is offering finance of up to €200m through the Official Credit Institute (ICO) to attend to immediate economic emergencies in the sector, such as hotels which have not yet been paid for travellers' trips. A further half a billion has been set aside for firms in the industry to borrow from in order to expand, adapt and improve their businesses to make the holiday sector in Spain more competitive, attractive and better equipped, including taking on more staff, modernisation, new ideas and lines of trade, and 'going digital'. The latter €500m will be available through the State Finance Fund for Competitiveness in Tourism (FOCIT), administered by the ICO,

and linked to the Secretary of State for Tourism. Among the steps included with this release of funds for the industry are direct financial benefits of €15m and €8m respectively for the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands, which have been the hardest hit by the Thomas Cook collapse as these are among the most popular package holiday destinations in Spain for tourists from the UK. “We're focusing on everyone affected, and especially, very much so, on the workers who lost their jobs after the chain went down,” said acting deputy president of Spain, Carmen Calvo. Ever since the government found out Thomas Cook was about to go out of business and the UK authorities did not intend to bail it out, ministers have been analysing 'justice measures', says Sra Calvo, and has not ruled out

launching legal action on behalf of those in Spain who have suffered the most damage. The Spanish Commission of Business Organisations (CEOE) has been brought on board as part of a 'combined response' to the 'legitimate defence of interests' of traders and workers, and the ministries of justice and of tourism are working on setting up information and advice for companies owed money. Some of the extra support and finance for the industry is aimed at making it more sustainable as an economy and a job market, focusing heavily on removing the seasonal aspect of it, which is responsible for employment being largely temporary or, if permanent, with long lay-off periods, on the islands and coasts. It is hoped this will be achieved by diversification and digitalisation, says Sra Calvo.

IT’S ALMOST HALLOWEEN! IS YOUR HOME SCARING BUYERS AWAY?

Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

You may have a home that you think you’ll have no problem selling, but are you overlooking some items that could scare your buyers away? And I’m not talking Halloween decorations! Reality is, it doesn’t take much to scare buyers away. So double check you’ve removed anything that could give a buyer the heebie-jeebies!

stuffed animals, and someone taking instant offence. If you’re unsure whether to take down your hobby whilst your home is on the market, then the simple answer to that is, YES! You can box it up, ready to display in your next home, as only a fellow taxidermist will appreciate such décor.

4

Half done repairs – What you think looks good, someone that doesn’t know you, may not! So you’ve put hard work in making some much needed repairs around the home, but are you a skilled craftsman/woman? I have been in a few “houses of horrors” and by easily getting in a qualified handyman, would soon make these horror houses become “dream homes!” It shouldn’t cost too much to get the simple things fixed, like changing light bulbs, fixing kitchen doors and stopping that dripping tap, to make it look like your house isn’t actually falling apart!

Here are a few things we’ve come across during house hunting:

1

Too many locks – An excessive amount of locks on the doors sends out the wrong signals.Even if you’re the “better safe than sorry” type, this does put people off. Buyers will think they’re in a high crime area, and will not want to hang around long enough to find out whether it’s true or not!

2

Uncomfortable art – What you think is classy, others may not, and displaying nude photography can be a turn off for some buyers. Yes it’s displayed in the privacy of your home, but remember, when buyers are looking around, they are trying to envisage themselves living there. And how can they do that, if their eyes are too fixated on the art, and not the room? Many buyers will be offended. You don’t want the buyer to feel uncomfortable, you want to encourage them to stay!

3

Taxidermy – Everyone has different likes and dislikes, that’s what makes this world so interesting! But, when it comes to animals, there is a fine line between someone liking to display

5

Unfriendly pets – No matter how much you love you beloved pets, not everyone feels the same. Some may have had a frightening encounter before, whilst others may have allergies. Either way, you need to keep your pets under control when you have a viewing appointment. This would be a great time to take them for a walk, or keep them in a pet carrier. It’s not for long, but buyers will appreciate your gesture, while giving them time to have a good look around. You want to make sure your home-selling efforts are not being overlooked, by something you can easily remove! Bingeworthy Box Sets Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Rescued after 15 years in a cult, Kimmy Schmidt decides to reclaim her life by venturing to New York, where she experiences everyday life with wide-eyed enthusiasm. On a whim, she rents a room from Titus, a gay wannabe Broadway actor, who makes ends meet as a street performer in Times Square. The unlikely pair find they're well-suited to help each other out, with Titus reintroducing Kimmy to modern life, and her providing him with the inspiration that you should never give up. Together they'll make it through whatever life throws at them.

Gilmore Girls Set in a storybook Connecticut town populated by an eclectic mix of dreamers, artists and everyday folk, this multigenerational drama about family and friendship centres around Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory. Lorelai owns the town's bed-andbreakfast, the Dragonfly Inn, with best friend/chef Sookie, and contends with weekly dinners with eccentric, well-off parents Richard and Emily Gilmore (who always have something to say about their daughter's life). After high school, Rory attends Yale University but frequently returns to Stars Hollow to visit her mom.

017 National online security helpline launched A free national cyber-safety helpline number has been launched, which anyone who suffers a threat to their online security can ring. The threedigit number is also for reporting internet fraud, phishing, hack attacks or dodgy websites of any description. It can even be used just to ask questions and advice about security for computers, phones, tablets or any other internetbased device, says the ministry for business and the economy. The number, 017, is based upon the format used for the domestic and gender violence helpline, 016 – which does not show up on an itemised bill – and the emergency services number 112, which is the same as in most other countries across the European continent.

27

CostaBlancaPeople 22nd - 28th October 2019

In practice, the 017 line merely replaces the nine-digit number formerly used to contact the National Cyber Safety Institute, INCIBE, in order to make it easier to remember. The main purposes of the helpline, according to the announcement in the government's daily bulletin, are for seeking methods and tools for protecting data, inquiring about safety of WiFi connections and networks, configuration of privacy in internet services and devices and digital identity protection, identifying different types of online fraud, advising users who have been affected, virus, malware and spyware infections, and to clarify concerns or doubts about content which may or may not

be dangerous or inappropriate for children. Parents, teachers and children themselves can call the number to report online bullying and, in the case of the first two groups, request information about parental controls on devices and check whether their kids' screen use is excessive – for example, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends children aged two and under do not use screens. The free nine-digit INCIBE number, 900 116 117, remains operative and the same call centre is reached by dialling this as by dialling 017. In use 365 days a year, the line is open from 09.00 to 21.00 mainland Spain time (08.00 to 20.00 in the Canary Islands).

Mirko Properties the home of the ‘quick sell’ Based in Playa Flamenca, Mirko Properties has a considerable knowledge of the local property market and since opening its doors two years ago has helped hundreds of people make their property move. Specialising resale, new build and luxury homes, Mirko Properties covers the Costa Blanca South under the guidance of owner Mirko De Filippo who has more than 17 years experience in the local real estate market. The business has gone from strength-to-strength and regularly sells properties in less than three months and has therefore built a reputation for being masters of the quick sell. Mirko said: “When we list properties we work in a totally different way to any other real estate agent; we work with a network of more than 1,500 offices across Europe with a

total of 5,832 sales people and our network continues to grow each day. As soon as we have an exclusive property we list it with each one of those 5,832 contacts which means that the properties are shown and published in many countries and on many portals, giving our customers the highest chance of selling their property quickly.” Mirko Properties is multilingual and has clients from across Europe. Languages spoken include: Italian, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, English, Russian, Swedish and Norwegian. This means clients can be confident of understanding each step of the buying or selling process and be sure of being spoken to in their native language. Mirko Properties put their customers’ needs at the heart of the business and nothing is too

much trouble to ensure a hassle free experience. From start to finish of any transaction, it’s the customer that is the focus of this small family businesses attention. In fact, the relationships that are forged and the experience that the clients have often see the team keeping in touch long after the property has been bought or sold and many remain friends.

Mirko Properties can be found at Calle Santa Alodia, 445, Playa Flamenca, near to Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre. The office is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and out of hours the team can be contacted on 665 746 006. For further information visit: www.mirkoproperties.com or call 966 399 353.

LET TERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor I read a while ago that Torrevieja Town Hall announced that there was now a relief road to reduces congestion on the CV95 and, true enough, there is..... except that there is nothing to advise the motorists of same. The signs at the roundabout on the CV95 still say only "Urbanizacion" whilst at the Via Park 3 end, there is nothing to indicate where the road goes to. The sign for Orihuela is still indicating the road by the Via Park 3 centre. To make matters worse, if anyone does find and take the road from the Aldi end they will soon see a "No Through Road" sign confronting them! No chance of the congestion being relieved whilst these signs remain as they are. Barry Weston The Editor Sir, I thought you may be interested in a recent unpleasant experience I had on returning to my villa after a stay in the UK. On our second night home we retired at about 2300hrs and around 0200hrs to the sound of splashing water, I immediately jumped up as I thought we had a leak, however after checking the ceilings taps etc I could find no trace. I then realised the noise was coming from the bathroom which on initial check seemed ok. However, when lifting the toilet lid I was faced by a Hugh RAT which was attempting to escape from the bowl but could not get a grip on the

porcelain and kept falling back into the water. I finally decided that I would attempt to grab it, after having several attempts to flush it away with water but it was just to BIG. I then wrapped my arms and hands in heavy towelling and made a grab for the rat, I was able to hold it initially but was amazed by the strength of the animal and I could not hold it and it escaped. To the horror of my wife it disappeared into the bedroom, after searching I found its tail sticking out from under a set of drawers. There then started another tussle between me and the rat who again displayed amazing strength determined to escape, it then suddenly turned on me and BIT me through the towelling I had wrapped round me hands. It managed to sink its teeth into my finger drawing blood and a howl from me, enough was enough my got a knife from the kitchen and I was able to kill the rat! There then followed a 4am journey to the Medical Centre in SAN MIGUEL where I received instant medical attention from a very attentive staff and have since received follow up treatment. The next day I reported the matter to the WATER COMPANY in SAN MIGUEL who attended the same day and cleaned the sewers/drainage and laid rat poison as necessary. The Medical Centre and the Water Company are to be congratulated on their prompt and professional manner in which they dealt with the matter. M Ashton

Quirónsalud will perform free mammography tests for the early detection of breast cancer Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja hospitals will perform tests between 21 to 25 October. Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja Hospitals have launched a breast cancer prevention campaign by conducting free mammography tests to mark the world breast cancer day which took place on 19 October. Early diagnosis of the disease through mammography screening reduces the mortality rate by 15% to 20%. Mammography screening at Quirón will be offered for free from 21 to 25 October for women aged 40 and over who have not had a mammogram in 2019. In addition, Quirónsalud Torrevieja particpated in International Day against Breast Cancer with an information stand offering advice on preventing this illness and the importance of early diagnosis. The forum included the participation of members of the Asociación de Familiares y Enfermos de Cáncer de

Torrevieja (AFECÁNCER, Spanish acronym for the Torrevieja Association of Cancer Patients and Family Members). In addition, in order to promote self-examination, Quirónsalud created a written guide, which was printed and handed out at the stand. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in Spain, making up 29% of all cancers; it is estimated that one out of every eight women will suffer breast cancer. The increase in cases is due to the aging of the population, since its highest incidence is in women over fifty, although the incidence in women under forty has risen by 10% in the last few years. The reason for this increase in cases may be due to lifestyle changes, a tendency to have less children, the increased age women have their first pregnancy, and a history of the disease in direct family members. How to access the tests in each hospital center:

The mammogram period will be October 21-25 Quirónsalud Alicante Women interested to undergo the screening may request information at Quirónsalud Alicante Hospital from Monday to Friday. To book your appointment via phone, call 650 828 163 from 10 am to 2 pm, or send an email to info.alicante@quironsalud.es or visit the website http://www.quironsalud.es/alicante/es. Appointments are allocated until all slots assigned by the department are full through a medical prescription. Quirónsalud Torrevieja Women who are interested to undergo the screening at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital may request information from the hospital via phone, call 966 90 95 06 from 10 am to 2 pm, or send an email to prevencion.trv@quironsalud.es or visit the website http://www.quironsalud.es/torrevieja/e s. Appointments are allocated until all

slots assigned by the department are full through a medical prescription. About Quirónsalud Quirónsalud is the most important hospital group in Spain, and the third largest in Europe. Why Rylan turned down Celebrity and AllStar X Factor Rylan Clark-Neal has admitted he turned down the chance to appear in both the Celebrity and All Star X Factor spin-offs. Clark-Neal, 30, reached the quarter final of the ITV singing contest in 2012 but has since found success as a TV and radio host. He currently presents ITV2's Supermarket Sweep reboot, co-hosts Strictly Come Dancing spin-off It Takes Two with Zoe Ball and has previously stepped in as a guest presenter on This

Morning. He also has a Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio 2. “I was asked to do All Stars, but I’m alright,” he said. “I’ve got work. “It was weird because they asked and I was like, ‘No!’ and then they were like, ‘Do you want to do X Factor Celebrity?’ No.” X Factor: Celebrity debuted on ITV recently, with contestants including Glee actor Kevin McHale, journalist Martin Bashir, The Chase star Jenny

Ryan and a group of former Love Island contestants all performing. An air date for the All-Star series, which is slated to feature winners and popular contestants from previous seasons, is yet to be confirmed, though judge Louis Walsh has previously claimed that Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke are set to star. Former contestant Stacey Solomon, who has also since swapped singing for presenting roles, recently revealed that

she and Simon Cowell had discussed the possibility of her returning to the show - but she doesn’t fancy her chances against Lewis. “Simon definitely wants me to be a part of it and so do I, but I don’t want to compete against Leona Lewis - my anxiety would go through the roof,” she added. “It’s been 10 years since I did the show and I was nervous then, so I can’t imagine what I’d be like now.

“I’ve said to Simon I don’t feel I could do it all over again but both of us should have a role in some way. I love X Factor. I wouldn’t be where I am now without it.”

Health Benefits of Cucumbers Some people believe cucumbers are devoid of nutrients, because they’re pale in colour and high in water. But the truth is their fluid content is one of their many perks. Cukes (which contain about 20 calories and 4 grams of carb) can help protect and improve your health. Snack on slices, and add them to salads and jugs of H2O, use cucumbers to scoop up guacamole, hummus, tahini, pesto, or olive tapenade; or marinate them with other veggies for a chilled side dish... but make sure you are eating them and lots of them! Cucumbers promote bone health The top nutrient in cucumbers is vitamin K, which is key for bone health. One cup of cucumber with the peel still on supplies over 20 percent of the recommended daily target for vitamin K. This nutrient is required for bone formation, and several studies have linked low K levels to osteoporosis and increased fracture risk. Cukes may boost cardiovascular health too Cucumbers contain dozens of antioxidants, including flavonoids, which are known to

protect against heart disease. The seeds may also be beneficial: In a study published last year, a small group of people with mildly elevated blood fats consumed dried cucumber seed extracts daily. After six weeks they experienced a number of favorable changes, including decreased total cholesterol, decreased “bad” LDL cholesterol, increased “good” HDL, and decreased triglycerides. They're hydrating According to the USDA, one medium cucumber contains 194 grams of fluid. That translates to nearly seven ounces, just an ounce shy of a cup! Adding sliced cukes to water also adds flavour, which can help boost your water intake even more. And great for weight management Cucumbers offer a trio of characteristics that promote weight loss. They’re low in calories, but contain filling fibre and fluid. One medium cuke provides a quarter of the calories in a medium-sized apple. And of the 4 grams of total carb in the cucumber, one and a half are from fibre. Scooping up hummus with a medium peeled cucumber

rather than 10 pita chips saves 100 calories and 15 grams of carbohydrate, and takes up far more space in your stomach. Cucumbers may help reduce cancer risk Along with flax and sesame seeds, kale, broccoli, cabbage, strawberries, apricots, and other plant foods, cucumbers contain a natural substance called lignans. Bacteria in the digestive tract convert lignans into compounds that bind onto estrogen receptors. Some preliminary studies suggest they may protect against estrogen-related cancers, including those of the breast, ovary, uterus, and prostate. Cucumbers can soothe skin Popping a few cuke slices on puffy eyes actually makes a lot of sense. The pulp of cucumbers is primarily composed of water, vitamin C, and caffeic acid, a natural chemical that possesses anti-inflammatory properties. The combo triggers a soothing effect on skin, and reduces skin irritations and swelling. For these reasons cucumbers have long been applied topically as a home remedy for both acne and sunburn.

Madeira wines have a moment The fortified wine – named for the island where it’s made, just west of Morocco – was given a shoutout at last week’s Michelin awards, when the 2020 Sommelier Award winner, Jurica Gojevic, declared it his favourite style. The history is one of a happy accident. Up until the late 19th century, Madeira was a stop-off for ships travelling the Atlantic shipping routes to the East Indies. Sailors loaded their boats with wine, adding brandy to preserve it; as the ships sweated around the African coast, the heat seemed to help and the earliest version of Madeira was born. Later, winemakers replicated the process on land, only this time fortifying the wine with grain spirit, which sits at about 95 per cent strength (more than double a typical bottle of whisky). It worked and, because the process repeatedly heats and cools the wine and lets the air in, and forgoes cellars for five-story houses – all things are winemakers usually at pains to avoid – the wine that comes out is all but imperishable. “We say Madeira lasts forever,” says

CVS’s general manager Roman Jaën. “It’s the only wine which can be regularly bought and drunk with decades or centuries of bottle age. While not many wines can still be lively and vibrant after 100 years, Madeira can,” “It’s one of the few wines that has not changed since becoming popular 300 years ago,” says says Michelin man Gojevic, who looks after wine for Limerick’s newly-starred Adare Manor. Being ancient isn’t everything: at the moment, in the supermarkets, a bottle of young, blended Madeira starts at around £10 for a bottle of threeyear-old from Henriques & Henriques, who are one of only eight producers to make the wine. It’s delicious with fudge cake. Being accessible and idiot proof isn’t

the only attraction, though knowing that a bottle will keep in the cupboard indefinitely, even if you forget the cork, is a plus for those of us who clumsily clean up a party a little worse for wear. Better is that Madeira suits practically any food: there are dry and sweet styles, from four white grapes (Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, Malmsey, in order of ascending sweetness), and almost all, owing to their high acidity, have a dry-ish finish that pairs easily with different dishes. “Pairing it is very fun” says Gojevic, “There are a lot more options than people would think. Madeira wines go almost perfectly with everything from fish to cheese, meat to dark chocolate desserts.” As autumn cools to winter, find a fireplace, says 67’s Giammmattei, but don’t forget the bottle when the sun comes back. “The dry and young Madeiras can be surprisingly refreshing. Mix it with a slim tonic water, add an orange peel and you’ve a delicious drink to have on a terrace in the summertime.” Never a bad time, in other words – bag a bottle before everyone’s in on it.

Eat to live longer Everyone wants to live a longer life. But the goal of longevity is also to live a better life, with improved mental and physical wellness, and the ability to be active and independent. While genetics do play a role, lifestyle is a much more significant factor, and nutrition is a big piece of the puzzle. Here are five eating habits to adopt to up your chances of extending your life... Eat your veggies and fruit Eating more produce is truly one of the most important and impactful habits you can adopt. In addition to upping your nutrient intake, reaching those minimums may add years to your life. A meta-analysis published in the British Medical Journal found that a higher consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with a lower risk of mortality from all causes, especially heart disease. Aim for at least

five servings a day. More is fine, but in some research the risk of death did not reduce further beyond this amount. Go nuts for nuts (and nut butters) Nuts are nutrition powerhouses. They provide healthful fat, plant protein, fibre, antioxidants, vitamins, and key minerals, like potassium and magnesium. It’s no wonder they’re linked to life extension. An ounce of nuts is about a quarter cup, but two tablespoons of nut butter also counts as a serving. Eat more meat-free meals Researchers have discovered five areas in the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives. Deemed Blue Zones, these regions are found in very diverse areas, from Okinawa, Japan to Ikaria, Greece. One commonality they share is the consumption of primarily plant-based diets. Beans and lentils are cornerstones, and meat is eaten on average about five times per month in three- to fourounce portions -

about the size of a deck of cards. Eat like a Mediterranean When it comes to longevity, it’s the overall eating pattern, rather than one food or food group, that’s key - and a Mediterranean diet remains the gold standard for living longer and more healthfully. This pattern is characterized by a high intake of fruits and vegetables; whole grains; pulses; healthful fats from nuts, olive oil, and avocado; and herbs and spices, along with seafood a few times a week; a moderate consumption of dairy, eggs, and wine; and a limited intake of meat and sweets. Sip green tea Green tea is preventative medicine in a mug. Numerous studies have linked it to a lower risk of heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and obesity. It can also help you live longer. In addition to sipping, you can use green tea as the liquid in smoothies, oatmeal, or overnight oats, or to steam veggies or whole grain rice. It can also be incorporated into soups, stews, sauces, and marinades. Matcha, a powdered form of green tea, can also be used in beverages and recipes. Just be sure to cut off all caffeine at least six hours before bedtime so you won’t disrupt your sleep length or quality.

Instagram’s latest security feature Instagram has added a new feature for users to control the data they’re sharing with third-party apps. In the tab of its ever-growing hamburger icon, you can navigate to Settings –> Security –> Apps and Websites to see which third-party services have access to your data. From there, users can look at active and expired authorized apps, which may have had access to data like profile information, your username, account type, captions, and photos. With a growing number of companies, like photo-printing services and websitebuilding platforms, that ask to import photos from Instagram, it can be hard to

keep track of which apps have access to your Instagram account. To make the process clearer, Instagram is introducing a new authorisation screen that lists what information apps are requesting and lets users cancel or give access. Weirdly enough, Instagram says the rollout for the feature will take up to six months, which is an unusually long time. At most, Instagram usually takes a couple of weeks to roll out Instagram Story features to all users, so it’s curious why the company is taking its time to introduce an important security feature.

Sony goes 360 Sony has announced that its new 360 Reality Audio technology will launch in late fall with several partners. The format involves object-based spatial audio that places various elements of a music track around the listener in a virtual spherical environment. The experience is designed to replicate live music, with instruments and vocals coming from different directions. At launch, there will be around 1,000 songs available in 360 Reality Audio, including tracks from artists like Pharrell Williams, Bob Dylan, and Billy Joel. Sony has also captured live performances from artists such as Charlie XCX and Kodaline and converted them to the new format. Sony will of course be able to leverage music from its own record label, but the company says it’s also working with Universal, Warner, and Live Nation to add more content. Sony has partnered with Amazon Music HD, Deezer, and Tidal “360 Reality Audio is a proof point that innovation never stops,” Sony Electronics (North America) president and COO Mike Fasulo said in a press release. “The confluence of deep technical roots, tireless artists and forward-thinking hardware and semiconductor partners illustrates the tremendous draw of this radical new way to make music even more moving. Together with valued industry partners, Sony has architected

the most powerful, realistic music experience for listeners and a new medium for artists to create.” As for how you’ll actually get to listen to 360 Reality Audio, Sony has partnered with Amazon Music HD, Deezer, Tidal, and nugs.net. That’s bad news for Spotify or Apple Music users, then, but Sony does call out Amazon’s promising new Echo Studio as a way to play back this music natively. Other speakers will require Sony’s 360 Reality Audio decoder along with “multiple speaker units and signal processing technology,” so it’s unlikely that this’ll work for many existing setups. However, at launch the only mobile app support will come through “headphones from most manufacturers” when used with the Tidal, Deezer, and nugs.net iOS and Android apps. Certain recent Sony headphones will also be able to produce a “custom immersive musical field” through the Headphones Connect app, although it’s not clear how exactly that’ll work with external content. This will clearly be something that needs to be experienced in person to judge. Sony does appear to be making its best effort to make this a thing, but the same could have been said of various Sony-backed formats in recent decades. The news that it’ll work on Amazon’s new high-end Echo gives it a pretty good use case right out of the gates, though, and we’re looking forward to hearing more.

Twitter takes on cheating politicians

In June, Twitter said it would start placing a notice over tweets from certain elected and government officials who break the company's rules. But it turns out Twitter is doing more than just slapping a warning label over offending tweets the company leaves up in the name of public interest. On Tuesday, Twitter said users won't be able to like, reply, share or retweet these tweets. Users will still be able to share the tweet with a comment. "These actions are meant to limit the tweet's reach while maintaining the public's ability to view and discuss it," Twitter said in a blog post. The company also outlines when they're more likely to make an exception for public interest. Twitter hasn't applied the notice yet, but the company has faced numerous complaints in the past from people who say President Donald Trump has used the social media site to spread hate speech, misinformation and threats. The new notice applies only to elected and government officials along with candidates or nominees for political

office with more than 100,000 followers on Twitter, which would include Trump. Users will see a notice that states "The Twitter rules about abusive behavior apply to this tweet. However, Twitter has determined it may be in the public's interest for the tweet to remain available." Twitter said that the public interest exception doesn't mean politicians can say whatever they want on the platform. The company said it would remove a tweet if it "includes a declarative call to action that could harm a specific individual or group" or interferes with someone's rights. The company is less likely to make exceptions if the content promotes terrorism or threatens violence against a certain group of people. "We will err toward removal where there is evidence the content may be leading to actual or likely offline harm," Twitter said in the blog post. The company said it used the public interest exception fewer than five times in 2018.

Steroid injections for Orihuela goes pink for World Breast Cancer Day osteoarthritis may not The Councillor for Social Welfare, Mayte Sánchez, and the Councillor for Health, José Galiano, have attended activities scheduled to commemorate World Breast Cancer Day, which was celebrated on 19th October, along with the president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, Irene Celdrán.

The programming started Saturday with the reading of the manifesto at 8pm in the Plaza de San Sebastián, while at the same time the facade of the City Hall and the Auditorium of La Lonja were illuminated for the first time in pink, in tribute “to all the people who suffer from this disease and who struggle every day to overcome it,” said Sánchez. Likewise, the president of the AECC of Orihuela, thanked the Councillors for their collaboration and support and those attending any of the events were given pink ribbons to show solidarity with this very important issue that effects our society. The latest data shows that one in eight women will suffer from cancer. On Sunday 20th October 20 third annual anti-cancer run and walk took place in Orihuela to raise funds for the AECC and the Councillor for Health highlighted the work of the charity.

be safe

Steroid injections that relieve painful osteoarthritis (OA) may not be as safe as previously thought, research suggests. Cortisone is often injected into the hip and knees of OA sufferers to ease aching joints. However, studies have thrown up mixed results as to its safety. Scientists from Boston University looked at 459 OA patients up to 15 months after they had the injection in their hips or knees. The team found 10 percent of those who had cortisone put into their hips saw their symptoms, namely joint pain and stiffness, worsen. The jab also left them more at risk of fractures and joint degeneration. Of those who had the injection in their knees, 4 percent suffered side effects. “We've been telling patients even if these injections don't relieve your pain, they're not going to hurt you,” lead author Dr Ali

Guermazi said. “But now we suspect this is not necessarily the case. Nearly nine million people in the UK suffer from OA, NHS statistics show. In the US, more than 30 million people have the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To learn more, the scientists looked at OA patients who had between one and three corticosteroid injections last year. The patients came back two-to15 months later for a check-up. Scans showed 6 percent of the patients had worse OA than before the injection, some 0.6 percent were suffering a subchondral insufficiency fracture, which occurs when the bone is not strong enough to withstand day-today forces. And 0.7 percent had joint destruction, including bone loss, with the same number of patients enduring ‘complications of osteonecrosis’, when bone tissue dies due to a lack of blood supply.

Children being put at risk In the latest campaign focussing on the wearing of seat belts, child restraints and crash helmets, 232 children were found not properly secured in vehicles. Children, it can be argued, do not know any better, but the adults responsible for them certainly do, and it is those adults that the children will look up to for guidance, and to keep them safe. Of the 232 children found in a highrisk situation, 63 of them were in the front seats, where they are not permitted by law, and not wearing a seat belt. Children under 135cm must sit in the rear seats of a vehicle, with only a couple of exceptions. The data is particularly worrying for the DGT as on the so-called “road to zero”, the safety of children is paramount in the road safety strategy set in place in 2011 and running until 2020. In the campaign, which lasted a week as usual, some 402,981 vehicles were inspected, in which there were 4,000 people found not wearing a seat belt, which is mandatory for all vehicle occupants. However, if that figure isn´t bad enough, it doesn´t include the checks carried out by the local police across the country who joined the DGT and Guardia Civil in the campaign. Of those people identified as not wearing a seat belt, over 73% were on conventional roads, the location where 8 out of 10 deaths occur. The seat belt is a basic and fundamental element of road safety, life insurance. For this reason, its use is mandatory for all occupants of the vehicle and on all types of roads. In addition, the correct use of it is essential to fulfil the task

for which it was created. Children under 135 cm traveling within the vehicle, in addition to traveling with the child restraint system appropriate to their size and weight as the standard requires, must be seated in the rear seats of vehicles, except: 1. When the vehicle does not have rear seats

2.When all the rear seats are already occupied by other minors of the same characteristics 3.When it is not possible to install all child restraint systems in said rear seats. Only in these cases can children occupy the front seat of the vehicle, but always using the restraint system approved to their size and weight. Carrying the misplaced child or without the corresponding retention system is the responsibility of the adult. Seat belt use is not only monitored by officers on the ground but also from the air, with Pegasus-equipped helicopters and now drones constantly watching the network, as well as the new range of smart cameras that have been installed in many of the areas where the worst incidents occur.

What the DGT Says about Brexit We saw last week what the UK licence issuing authority, the DVLA, has to say about BREXIT changes, this week it is the turn of the DGT, Spain´s traffic authority, to tell us their side of the story. In the latest information published by the DGT, they are clear that if BREXIT takes place, your UK driving licence will not be valid for driving in Spain. Although they will honour a period of transition for tourists, they have launched a special protocol to ensure you can exchange, replace or renew your licence under the same conditions prior to BREXIT, if you submit your application before November 1, 2019. They explain further that if BREXIT takes place, the United Kingdom will cease to belong to the European Union, so all traffic agreements within the EU will no longer be valid for citizens of the UK. Among other things, this means that driving licences from the United Kingdom will only be valid for driving in Spain during the first 9 months after BREXIT, provided they are valid.

If you want to continue driving in Spain, it will be necessary to make an exchange, renewal or replacement of your permit for an equivalent Spanish one, surrendering the original. Spain has already set in motion the protocol to achieve this, and will guarantee an exchange, so long as you make the application before the deadline, and you are the holder of a full licence, and have habitual residence in Spain. If you qualify, and apply before

November 1, 2019, whatever happens on October 31, 2019, you will be guaranteed an appointment to exchange your licence for a period of 9 months from the date of BREXIT. At the time of the procedure, the original permit will be withdrawn, and you will be given a temporary licence and in approximately one month and a half you will receive your Spanish licence through the post. For the latest information from the DGT, you can check their website, dgt.es.

Top Tips for buying a used car The biggest problem with buying a used car is that you will never truly know the history of the vehicle, what is has been through, who has driven it, or how technically sound it is. But there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk, and hopefully get a lot of future use from your new purchase. Although we all may dream of buying a fleet of new cars, maybe adding a Ferrari, a Lamborghini or a Rolls Royce to our collection, the reality is that we often have to settle for something within a much smaller budget, and that is where a second-hand car is often the only option. The sad reality is that new cars depreciate the moment we buy them, and the quality standard of the car also reduces with every single trip. The first top tip for buying a used car is to have realistic expectations. While cheaper cars can be cheaper to buy, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are cheap to run. So, it’s key that before you investigate buying a car or making any decisions that you set out your budget for the car and any additional costs. Find out how much does servicing cost, how expensive are spare parts, how freely available are those parts? Do a thorough check assuming things might go wrong, not because you should be pessimistic, but rather because faults do happen so if you plan for them within your budget then they won´t be so much of a surprise. By the way, some industry experts estimate that on average a person would spend 1,800 euro per year on their car and keeping it roadworthy, increasing

over time, so keep this in mind, perhaps spreading a budget over that year. The figure includes fuel, as well as insurance and tax, but also servicing and maintenance. Love at First Sight? Don´t trust your first impression. Make sure you look at the car with a critical eye. Having a reliable and sturdy car is not about the colour, so don´t fall into the trap of choosing a vehicle by that means, but rather take a long and detailed look at it. You can research the model online, checking to see what the most common problems and faults are, and then check your new potential purchase for signs of those problems. Look out for obvious modifications. Some vehicle modifications can render the ITV as invalid, whereas other can

simply be masking a deeper problem. Modifications can also increase the cost of insurance. Check the car in daylight too, so you can see clearly if there are any problems. History? What History? All cars have two histories. One, we will never know about, as we have not been with it for the duration of its life, and neither has the current owner. Even the most careful of drivers cannot avoid leaving their car in the street or a car park, and so nobody really knows what has happened during that time. However, there is one history we can check, that is

the administrative register. We have covered this in some detail before, so scroll down our wall if you want to find that, but it is important that you check the car and see if there are any debts, fines or other issues recorded, as if you buy it, they become your problem. Check the Documents Does the car come with the original documents such as the logbook and ITV card? If not, you may need to ask the seller to obtain these before you buy the car. Don´t but a car without the original documents as you cannot be sure it is even for sale. Testing… Testing… It is important to test drive any car you are thinking of buying, new or second hand, but it is arguably more important for the latter. Whilst a car might look pristine on the outside, we don´t usually buy cars for their aesthetics but rather as a mobility tool, so how it will feel getting us from a to b is crucial.

Check everything during the test drive. See if the car pulls to either side, if it stops safely, accelerates well, and if it turns without struggling. Check all the features of the car too, such as the electrics, including the lights, and the safety features such as seat belts. Check the windscreen wipers, washers, everything you might use on a regular, or occasional basis. You don´t have to settle for one test drive of course, go back and do it again if you feel it appropriate, maybe even at night, whatever makes you feel more confident in the vehicle you are buying. Buying a car can be a stressful time, it is a big investment, and it will not be without problems (sorry), but if you check these things before buying a car, and more importantly make sure you are 100% happy before handing over any money, then hopefully you will have a long and happy life still with your new, albeit second-hand, motor.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT me, it is V-A-R all the way.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Pep’s not a revolutionary Emery’s been doing that all season I’ve said it before and I will say it again - do not expect VAR to be consistent until everyone is calling it the same thing. It is as simple as that. If half the world are saying VAR as in car and the other half are saying V-A-R then how can we reasonably expect the process to work?

And the longer it fails, the more material people like my not-so-good self get - so long may it continue. Someone has to profit from this shambles. Considering I had already written 95% of this column before United vs Liverpool kicked off, you can understand why I was doing my VAR drama dance beforehand - and boy, was I rewarded.

kick-off. All jokes aside, Watford bottom of the table and utterly woeful - should have been a great way for Spurs to get back in the saddle following their preinternational break form. Things looked marginally better when Danny Welbeck kept the Daniel Sturridge flame alight by hobbling off injured (again) after 90 seconds - but Spurs seem determined to inflict actual pain on anyone watching them currently.

It comes from the very top. If Sky and the BBC cannot be bothered to get round a table with BT Sport and come up with a deal that works for everyone, then what is happening to the world? I mean, this has not snuck up on us we’ve been knowing this day has been coming since about 2016, haven’t we? Why are we not better prepared? For

playing at home and (b) playing City, it actually made sense to find a way to get another two ballers on the pitch. And, it kinda worked, didn’t it? I did feel for Palace though, especially Christian Benteke - you wait nearly three seasons for a goal and you are less than ten seconds on the pitch when Ederson tips your bullet header on to the bar. Even a one-year extension doesn’t make that pain go away.

We can all agree that United’s recruitment has been poor over the last few years but it’s great to see they’ve finally found a longterm replacement for Howard Webb in Martin Atkinson. If Atkinson didn’t pick up the MOM award at Old Trafford, VAR certainly did - would be the point of view of those of a Liverpool persuasion, like Jurgey-lad for example.

Doucoure briefly remembered the kind of stuff that made him one of the hotter prospects in English football to give Watford an early lead, a lead that should have been given the opportunity to blossom further had VAR been reminded that they are actually allowed to overturn an onfield penalty decision after Gerard Deulofeu was hockey-stick-hooked to the ground.

United’s opener was scored after Origi took a tumble after Lindelof snuck up behind him - to be fair to Origi, if he is going to be Salah’s main understudy he’s got to nail down winning those fouls better. Moments later, Sadio Mane hoped to get away with a little bit of basketball and that people would completely forget the new laws of the game and turn a blind eye.

You’d have been forgiven for thinking that would have been the worst VAR call of the Premier League day when, in fact, it wasn’t even the worst one in this match. Dele Alli’s shoulders must start quite far down his arm for that equaliser to stand. Still, Spurs fan can probably call a home 1-1 draw with a side bottom of the table as progress which says something about their topfour credentials.

Ederson is clearly fully integrated into the English game now, given the language lip-readers will have picked up on following his second brilliant save to keep City’s sheet spotless. City themselves could have pointed to VAR and wondered what was going on - unless a new law has come in where a player can get an instant piggy-back in the penalty area, I am going to suggest that Wilf Zaha did foul Kevin de Bruyne. And, given the quality of Gary Cahill’s performance again, did Manchester United miss out quite massively by not taking a gamble on him? Over at Stamford Bridge, has the Mason Mount bubble finally burst? Will Frank Lampard be putting his star pupil in detention after the Chelsea magic happened after Mount had been hooked? Christian Pulisic came off the bench to replace Mount and have a

The VAR drama certainly masked how poor Liverpool were for so much of the game and if they had to turn to the Ox, Naby Keita and Adam Lallana to turn the game then maybe they don’t have the squad depth they need - even if Lallana did nick the equaliser in the last ten minutes. Just think, had United held on then someone might have had to give Ole Gunnar some credit for being tactically half-decent - VAR saved him from that fate, right? Then take the farce at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as example number two. No, not the 7-2 defeat to Bayern, they’ve moved on since then. I’ve been reliably informed that the two big screens at Spurs are larger than the rest of the Premier League screens combined - so if you are going to flash up the wrong VAR decision then this is certainly the place to do it, right? Before the game, there were clear murmurings of “imaging losing to this rabble”, which tells me the Watford fans were feeling confident ahead of

I am not calling Peppy G a fraud but all this talk of him being a revolutionary for playing without two proper central defenders against Palace is crazy and disrespectful for Unai Emery who has been doing it all season with Mustafi and David Luiz. Given that Palace weren’t likely to see too much of the ball as they were (a)

hand in the move that saw HudsonOdoi lay on the winner for Alonso. This young Chelsea side can now add ‘character’ to their growing list of accolades. Funny how the Longstaff lads found it trickier against a proper midfield though, eh? We haven’t mentioned VAR for at least

a paragraph which tells me we need to go to Leicester next. Now, I am a fan of anything that winds Sean Dyche up, frankly - so seeing Burnley’s ‘equaliser’ chalked off due to some wonderfully experienced defending by Jonny Evans warmed my heart. Should it have been a goal? Of course, but who cares? That Vardy account was busy again as it added another goal to it - something that was nailed on to happen as soon as the Burnley fans started their songs. Tielemens netted the obligatory screamer from a Leicester midfielder to keep Brentan’s revival on track. VAR might have been involved at Villa Park as well because, you know, Aston Villa were playing. I think Dean Smith is perfectly entitled to wonder what Villa have done to VAR in a previous life as they had yet another perfectly good goal chalked off for something that couldn’t really be classed as a clear and obvious error - yeah, remember that phrase? However, the Villa are getting used to needing to score at least one more goal than needed to get a result and Matt Targett was on, er, target in injury-time to give them all three points against a very easy-on-the-eye Brighton side. You could have also expected Raul Jiminez to have ended goalless on Saturday given VARs applaudable determination to continue his goal drought. Jiminez had two disallowed before Wolves were given a spot-kick and, given he is the designated penalty taker, there was every chance VAR would have overruled that too. They didn’t. Jiminez scored, and although Danny Ings has now scored in four consecutive games the Saints haven’t won any of them. If you were watching the action up at Goodison Park, were you one of the majority who wondered what the hell Bernardo was doing cutting back inside? Well, he made idiots of all of us (including the West Ham defence) when he went back the other way again to score the opening goal. Half of Marco Silva’s battle to keep his job is based around getting the best out of Gylfi Sigurdsson. Gylfi had started every game before this one and contributed zero goals and zero assists. Silva dropped him and gave him nine minutes at the end and Gylfi stuck one top bins - problem solved, job saved. Considering the propensity of both Bournemouth and Norwich to concede goals by the bucketload, this one ending 0-0 might have been the biggest surprise of the weekend.

SMGS at Font de Llop A beautiful day and a course in excellent condition greeted the 38 members and 8 accompanying guests making the trip to Font de Llop. Some complications over green fee arrangements led to a few Committee Members, and pro-shop staff, getting some unnecessary stress before play commenced. In the end, though, all was resolved amicably. Set up pretty short, with some work still going on to recover areas affected by recent heavy rains as well as general maintenance, some high scores were expected. However, prize-winning scoring across all categories was pretty even (and average) with only Dave Alderdice amongst the members taking full advantage, beating his nearest rival for maximum Order of

Merit points by a mere cinco puntos. Well played Dave!! Peter Devlin, a regular visitor, also beat his handicap. Another visitor, Ray Waite, almost had a hole-in-one on the across-the-water par-three 12th , missing by a mere 6 inches. The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Mick Seymour (33), 3rd Mike Jordan (34 on CB), 2nd Keith Wickham (34 on CB) and 1st Ken Flaherty with 35 points. Silver Category: 4th Ivan Hanak (31), 3rd Keith Little (35 on CB), 2nd Noel Bannon (35 on CB) and 1st Brian Mulligan with 36 points. Gold Category: 4th Theo Boelhouwer (33 on CB), 3rd Andy Shaw (33 on CB), 2nd Colin Rust (36) and 1st Dave
