Breast Cancer Awareness Day October is World Breast Cancer Month and local charity Maria and The Pink Ladies marked the event with an awareness campaign on Sunday 27th October at Zenia Bouevard. The event

began around 12.30pm with a host of local performers taking to the stage to entertain the crowds: this included Keiley Page, Shannon Campbell, Lorna Michelle, ABBA Girls, No Limit, Chloe Leigh’s Cher tribute, David John Williams’ Rod Stewart tribute, Totally Dance Studio, Raquel Pena Flamenco

Dance School, La Sal de Torrevieja. The event was hosted by Stevie Spit and supported by Sunshine FM. Over the years this event has become well-known locally for its impressive balloon release. However, it was decided that due to the impact on the environment there would be no

balloons released this year. Instead, in addition to private donations, visitors to the event were given the option to buy a rose for €2 which was then added to a mural wall on display at the event. The mural of roses formed the pink bow that is the global symbol of breast cancer awareness. The proceeds from the event will be donated directly to Spanish anti-cancer charity the AECC and although Continued on page 3

HELP VEGA BAJA FLOOD VICTIM ADDITIONAL SUPPORT For many, the recent Gota Fria floods are becoming a distant memory as life returns to normal. For others, the devastation that they experienced will continue for many months to come. HELP Vega Baja (registered charity) have been working with various businesses to raise funds for those people affected and to date, 26,541 euros has been raised. The Elective Committee of the charity have today (Monday) agreed to increase this by a further 30,000 euros. President, Michele Masson, stated “The support from people

in the community, both individuals and businesses, has been phenomenal. Our volunteers are now in the process of working with local people in the affected areas and town halls to identify where the greatest needs are. We have started visiting homes ourselves to see where our support is most needed. Many homes need a great deal of repair and we therefore envisage that this work will be ongoing for several months. It is important to us that we do what we can to ensure that people are safe and living in

homes that are habitable, but we can of course only do this if we are aware where these homes and families are. “We would like to issue an appeal to anyone who is struggling as a result of the floods to please contact us on 966 723 733 or alternatively, email to president@helpvegabaja.com We will continue to provide updates on progress via the local press and social media. Please remember to check our website at www.helpvegabaja.com and the HELP Vega Baja Facebook page.”

17 invasive species in Santa Pola: Almost a quarter are poisonous

Poachers spotted in the natural park

Santa Pola has recorded a total of 17 invasive species in its coastal waters. The Fishermen’s Association announced the news this week, indicating that with every passing year, the probability of more invasive species arriving increases due to climate change and other factors. Studies have shown that of the new species inhabiting Santa Pola waters, 24% are venomous including the rabbit fish

Residents and visitors have reported a number of alleged incidents of illegal hunting in La Mata natural park – a protected area where hunting is strictly prohibited. Witnesses claim that hunting has been going on for months almost every weekend and on Sunday last, as many as a dozen people with shotguns and dogs were seen entering the park around early morning and are believed to have been hunting birds and rabbits despite the close proximity of visitors to the park as well as cyclists and nearby farm workers. Over 150,000 people visit the protected space every year to enjoy the unique flora and fauna. Within the park boundaries, hunting activity is strictly prohibited. Sometimes, the park management authorises a special permit for the hunting (without weapons) of rabbits for the purposes of population control – the rabbits in the natural park, if left unchecked, often cause serious damage to the 40 hectares of grape cultivation in La Mata Park, and as such, their numbers are closely monitored and managed by park rangers. It is not yet known what measures are being taken to stop the recent practice of hunting within the park, but it is recommended that anyone who witnesses poaching or the possession of hunting firearms within the park should immediately alert the Guardia Civil.

Woman rescued Cabo Roig fall

after

A woman was taken to Torrevieja hospital with minor injuries after suffering fall from the top of Cabo Roig promenade at the weekend. The woman was walking along the busy path at La Caleta beach when it is believed she fell through a hole. Witnesses said the woman fell from a great height, but her injuries were mostly minor thanks to the amount of shrubbery on the embankment which broke her fall. The incident was attended by Local Police officers from the Orihuela Costa substation, a SAMU ambulance crew and firefighters who were called upon due to the difficulty of accessing the area in order to reach the woman. The woman was taken by stretcher as curious beachgoers looked on.

Man dies in Albatera car accident A man has died in a car crash in Albatera. His, an English plated car, was the only vehicle involved in the incident which occurred on Saturday afternoon. A woman, who was also in the car at the time of the crash, was taken to Vega Baja Hospital for treatment. The crash happened on the CV-873 between Albatera and Hondón de los Frailes. Fire crews had to cut the victims free from the wreckage after the car left the road and hit a tree.

The silver cheeked toadfish

(Siganus Luridus) and the silver cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus). The toadfish, similar to the puffer fish, is extremely poisonous if eaten and has been known to induce heart failure. The arrival of these animals on the coast is due not only to natural ecological factors but also human influence such as the opening of the Suez Canal which has allowed access of species from the Red

Sea and Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean. Invasive species can also arrive in the ballast waters of cargo ships. The Marine Research Centre of Santa Pola (Cimar) which is linked to the University of Alicante revealed that recreational

vehicles also inadvertently transport invasive species and because the Mediterranean is becoming warmer due to climate change, the waters can facilitate tropical species.

Number of Brits moving to EU at highest in decade A study reported by British newspaper The Guardian has revealed the increasing number of Britons making use of their freedom to live and work in other EU countries. The number has increased markedly and the rate of departure accelerated since the 2016 Brexit referendum, according to the report. Up to 84,000 people are expected to leave the United Kingdom and move to EU countries this year, according to the analysis, which was conducted by the Oxford in Berlin group and the Berlin Social Science Centre. The figure demonstrates a drastic increase when compared with the 59,000 who made the same move in 2008. The study also looked specifically at relocations from the UK to Germany. A similar trend was observed here, with 11,500 people making that move in 2018, compared to 8,500 in 2008. Citizenship and nationalisation figures also

follow the same trend. While 622 Britons received German citizenship in 2015, 7,493 were naturalised in 2017, the report states. For the EU as a whole, naturalisations rose from 2,106 in 2015 to 14,678 in 2017. Daniel Tetlow, one of the researchers behind the study, said that researchers also

conducted interviews with people who had moved from the UK to the EU, in an effort to understand the trend. Changes to the way people see their British identity are part of the explanation, Tetlow told The Guardian. “One of the things I find most striking is this new BritishEuropean identity that many refer to,” he said.

“And no, it’s not just the privileged metro middle classes; I’ve met proud British mechanics, ex-British forces, British ambulance drivers, British teachers and unemployed Brits, and because of Brexit almost all of them feel a new motivation in being active Europeans, and no less British as a result,” the researcher added. The analysis is based on figures from the OECD and national statistics offices in the relevant countries. Quantitative parts of the study looked at British nationals who left the country between 2008 and 2019. As many as 30 percent of this group said that Brexit had affected their mental health, and half said that they would consider giving up their British nationality if necessary to be able to keep their EU nationality. The deadline for Brexit is currently October 31st, with an EU decision outstanding on the length of an extension to be offered to the UK.

CELEBRATIONS & JUBILATIONS On 19th October 2009 the doors were opened for the first time on the Age Concern Charity Shop in Av. del Mar, Los Montesinos, so it was fitting that a celebration was held for this 10th anniversary of the grand opening. Shop manager Paula, who has worked in the shop since day one, organised a party for volunteers and customers alike. They were all treated to cava, juices, wine, canapes and nibbles and we had a couple of renditions of ‘Happy birthday’ sung by everyone. The highlight of the day was the cutting of the birthday cake made especially by stalwart volunteer Kath Brocklebank. A toast was given by Paula thanking all her

volunteers for their support over the years and to look forward to another10 years of service to the community and the vulnerable in the area. Customers of all nationalities frequent this shop not only for the bargains of clothing and bric-a-brac but often call in just for a chat with the happy band of volunteers when dropping off donations for sale. Being a household name, Age Concern values the efforts made from their charity shops by informing people of all the services available, selling tickets for all the social events and just being there when needed. OH HOW WE DANCED Age Concern celebrated on

Saturday 26th October with their End of Summer event held at The Club in Quesada. This hugely successful event saw a lively crowd tuck into a delicious carvery meal followed by music from the Campoverde Reef Band who played songs from the 50’s up to modern day. Their musical expertise thrilled all the dancers and the dance floor was packed. A grand raffle was held and lucky ticket holders chose their prizes which ranged from perfume, a beauty basket, alcohol (of course) basket of fruit and the list goes on! Age Concern raised 342 euro on the night which will go straight towards maintaining all the services to help vulnerable people in our area. To find out how Age Concern could help you please visit the website www.ageconcerncostablancasur. org. Why not follow us on Facebook AGE CONCERN COSTA BLANCA SUR for regular updates on all our social activities at our Day Centre and around town. Franco remains Why did thousands of dead fish moved from Valley wash up on the Mar Menor? of the Fallen The remains of Francisco Franco were moved from the elaborate mausoleum to a more low key grave, 44 years after the dictator’s lavish funeral. The move, which took place on Thursday last, fulfils a pledge made by Spain’s socialist government which said that Spain should not continue to glorify a fascist. Franco’s family had unsuccessfully challenged the reburial in court. After his remains were exhumed in a private ceremony, family members carried Franco’s coffin out of the basilica at the valley of the Fallen – a national monument carved into a mountain near Madrid. The coffin was then taken by helicopter to a private family plot at a cemetery in Madrid where he was reburied next to his late wife. Speaking in a live television address on the day of the reburial, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the exhumation was a step towards reconciliation, adding: “Modern Spain is the product of forgiveness, but it can't be the product of forgetfulness.” Only a few people were allowed to attend the event, which took place under tight security. They included the justice minister, an expert in forensics, a priest and 22 descendants of Francisco Franco. Media were not allowed but more than 200 journalists were reporting from near the site. The family were not allowed to drape the national flag on his coffin but took along the same flag that covered Franco's

coffin at his 1975 funeral. In total, the exhumation and re-burial will cost about €63,000. The Valley of the Fallen houses more than 30,000 dead from both sides of the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War, in which Franco's Nationalist forces defeated the Republican government. The site was partly built by political prisoners, whom Franco's regime subjected to forced labour. Thousands of those killed by his forces were interred there without their families' consent. The site has been a focal point for Franco supporters and a shrine for the far right. Visitors were able to lay flowers and say prayers at the late dictator's tomb. Prime Minister Sanchez said on Thursday the site would symbolise something different when it reopens, and that only victims of the civil war now lie interred there. The burial place of Franco has been the subject of heated debate for decades and the country remains divided over whether his remains should have been moved, newspaper polls suggest. One such poll by newspaper El Mundo said 43% supported the move, with 32.5% against and the rest undecided. Many descendants of Franco's victims are happy that action is finally being taken but Franco supporters and his family have accused the government of using his reburial as pre election propaganda.

On Saturday 12th October hundreds of crabs, eels, shrimps and fish were seen writhing in the shallows of the Mar Menor, to such an extent that concerned members of the public said it looked as if the water was boiling. The distressing and disturbing sight of these fish suffocating due to a lack of oxygen has come to symbolise the environmental collapse of Mar Menor, the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe. Experts put the disaster down to the management of the land surrounding the lagoon, which itself covers 17,000 hectares. More specifically, they blame intensive farming for contaminating the soil and the groundwater with nitrates from fertilisers, which end up in the Mar Menor, causing eutrophication. This happens when there is an excessive amount of nutrients the water, provoking the growth of phytoplankton which reduces the amount of oxygen in the water. The lack of urban planning together with poorly designed sanitation networks exacerbate the problem, which is growing at such a rate that new “acute fatal episodes can be triggered at any time,” according to Juan Manuel Ruiz, a scientist from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO). Floods are proving to be ever more deadly due to the decline of dry-land agriculture, which uses terraced fields that retain water. Now the solution is

more complex because, even if no more nitrates are leaked directly into the lake, the release of those already present in the groundwater will continue to be discharged into the Mar Menor for some time to come. The first indication that the Mar Menor was in crisis came in 2016, when the phytoplankton became so dense that it turned the water green. With sunlight unable to reach the bottom, 85 percent of its vegetation was wiped out. Subsequently, the water became clear again, giving rise to an optimism that

turned out to be unwarranted. This time, the problem was compacted by fresh water entering the lagoon along with contaminated sediment dragged in by the flood waters. Preliminary estimates from the IEO indicate that 35 to 60 tons of nitrates, 25 to 45 tons of ammonium and more than 100 tons of phosphates, found their way into the Mar Menor, along with the fresh water and mud during the

September floods. The change to the agricultural model in Campo de Cartagena, which drains into the Mar Menor, was adopted in 1979. Under this model, water from the Tagus River is channelled into the Talave Reservoir, which feeds into the Segura River. The dry land was irrigated, and this irrigated land increased to cover an area ten times its previous size: 49,488 hectares of irrigated land have been detected, 12,165 (25%) of which has been watered without irrigation permits, according to a report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Conservationists argue that the increase in irrigated land was encouraged by authorities, pointing out that even protected areas were used for irrigation farming despite the legal restrictions. To make matters worse, large desalination plants such as Valdelentisco and Torrevieja were used for new illegal irrigation rather than to cover the Tagus-Segura Water Transfer areas when water is scarce. In 2017 legal action was taken by prosecutors against 34 politicians, government workers, growers and entrepreneurs accused of turning a blind eye to agricultural activity that was hurting the lagoon. In April, the Civil Guard closed 50 illegal desalination plants. The CHS, meanwhile, conducts its own investigations into illegal wells, irrigation and dumping sites.

Orihuela museums reopen doors after the devastating gota fria The Department of Culture has announced that is has reopened the doors of La Muralla, the Archaeological Museum and the Miguel Hernández exhibition hall as well as the patio and garden of the poet's house after extensive repairs have been carried out after the devastating effects of the September storm. After just over a month of being closed, the Museum La Muralla will open its doors at its usual opening times know that the flood waters have receded and the damage repaired, luckily the water did not affect the archaeological remains. "After repairing the kift, the electrical panel and reducing the humidity and damp in the museum, La Muralla is once again prepared and ready to receive visitors," Mar Ezcurra, Councillor for Culture announced. As for the Regional Archaeological Museum, only the main hall, where La Diablesa by Nicolás de Bussy can be opened, since repairs and cleaning is still taking place in the San Juan de Dios exhibition hall. "Another place that opened its doors recently was the Miguel Hernández Exhibition Hall and it will do so with a pictorial exhibition of

various authors dedicated to the Oriolan poet," said the Councillor. She explained that the exhibition showcases 26 works by 19 authors, among which are: José Aledo, José Antonio Muñoz Grau, Amalia Navarro, Alfonso Ortuño, Eva Ruiz and the contemporaries of Miguel Hernández including Rosario Sánchez Mora "Dinamitera" and Miguel Abad Miró. Works by Francisco Álvarez, Rafael Armengol, Rafael Canogar, Joan Castejón, Alberto Corazón, Francisco Farreras, Iluminada García Torres, Joaquina Illán, Eduardo Lastres, Pau Lau, Carmen Pagés and Vicente Toti will also be exhibited. “Thanks to the director of the

Miguel Hernández Cultural Foundation, Aitor Larrabide, we can inaugurate this wonderful exhibition on the Oriolan poet that also includes nothing more and nothing less than four original drawings made by Miguel Hernández himself: ‘Gallo’, ‘Granada’, ‘Pomegranates’ and ‘Snake’. These drawings are provided by Francisco de Díe Rogel and owned by the Foundation”, explained Mar Ezcurra. The Department of Culture continues to work tirelessly in the museums and cultural centres that were affected by the gota fria so that they can open their doors as soon as possible and in the best conditions for the public.

White foam in River Segura investigated The Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) has opened an investigation to locate the origin of the foam that appeared floating on the surface of the Segura river as it passed through the Vega Baja recently. The foam was first spotted in Murcia and then moved along the body of water until it reached the Vega Baja region. The water quality department of the Confederation will analyse the samples in case there may be contaminating substances such as detergents, organic matter or nutrients or any other product which could prove to be a risk to public health, although the results will not be known for at least ten days. The foam appeared after the heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday in the Region of Murcia and in the province of Alicante, which reached somewhere near 40 litres per square metre. In most cases the foam is coming from the exit of sewage treatment plants or rainwater drains that discharge into the river and for which the municipalities are directly responsible. Therefore, it is the town councils that the sanctions are directed towards, although the final results of these analysis are rarely conclusive. Spokesman Moisés Cruz, from the Anti-pollution Platform in Defence of the Garden said that the appearance of foam occurs frequently every time the river carries more water and demanded explanations from the administrations.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

D

espite the Withdrawal Agreement Bill failing to pass through Parliament last Saturday, the market viewed the pound with optimism at the beginning of the week; it failed to touch the highs seen at the end of last week but still made 0.4% gains on the day. Investors appear to believe the threat of no deal is receding. The ambitious three-day timetable for reviewing the Bill failed to pass and put the pound’s rise in check, but there were indications of support for the Bill in Parliament. The pound spent most of the rest of the week treading water as the market awaited the decision of the EU on whether an extension to the 31st October deadline will be granted and how long that extension will be. In the meantime, the Prime Minister has proposed a date of 12th December for a General Election if the EU grants a long enough extension and has promised MPs more time to review the Bill if they agree to that date. With such dramatic political news, the ecostats faded into the background and there was little in them to help or hinder sterling. UK retail sales were flat in September, in line with forecast and Rightmove’s index saw residential property prices falling0.2% in October and 0.6% higher on the year. The CBI's Industrial Trends Survey was nine

points lower at -37 "amid [a] gloomy outlook" with "downbeat" prospects. The biggest news was that UK public sector borrowing was less than expected in September but £600 million more than the same month last year, "the first September year-on-year borrowing increase for five years.” All the numbers had little impact and next week is set for more Brexit focus as the market considers the likelihood of a General Election before Christmas. In Europe, Mario Draghi ended his term at the ECB on a downbeat note as rates were held at historic lows. Numbers released this week demonstrate the nature of the challenge his replacement Christine Lagarde has on her hands. European consumer confidence fell a point to -7.6 and there were indications that the Eurozone economy may only grow 0.1% this month. The HIS Market flash PMI inched up from 50.1 to 50.2 but Germany’s numbers were a cause for particular concern – employment fell for the first time in six years and the manufacturing PMI was well below the 50 threshold at 41.9. After pledging seven years ago to do “whatever it takes” to save the euro, the end of Draghi’s tenure and his successes were overshadowed by the slowing of global growth.

Feral cat sterilisation The Councillor for Health, José Galiano, gave details of a new campaign that the Department has been carrying out in the coming weeks for the “Sterilisation of Feral Cat Colonies”. This programme will be carried out following a grant given by the Diputación de Alicante for a total of 10,454 euros. This procedure consists of capturing,

sterilising and releasing the cats, “which is believed to be the most effective method in the medium and long term, to control the growth of the feral cat population,” said the Councillor. This action has been carried out throughout the month of October and is expected to be completed by the 31st October.

The campaign is being carried out in conjunction with several Veterinary Clinics across the Municipality, assigned by the College of Veterinarians of the Province of Alicante. The method of capture is varied, depending on the location and numbers of each feral car colony. However, a trap cage is the most common and successful method.

Dead body found after 15 years The body of a woman, believed to have died around 15 years ago, has been found in Madrid. The National Police discovered the woman’s now mummified remains at her home. It is believed the 78 year old died of natural causes and foul play is not suspected. Officers entered the woman’s home last week after a family member reported her missing. According to Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the mummified remains were found in the bathroom of the house and are estimated to have been there for between 14 and 16 years. Local reports indicate that neighbours had been asking police to search the house for years and claim that the last time they saw the woman alive was in September 2004. Last week when officers showed up at the property, a second floor apartment, with the woman’s relatives they could not open the door because it had been locked with a key from the inside. The fire brigade were called upon to intervene and eventually, with the help of a ladder, the property was accessed through a window that was semi open. After the woman died, her body did not decompose due to the humidity of the room and because there was a ventilation slit – the combined process brought about mummification.

Three chances to discover marvellous Madrid Organised by local Spanish lady Begoña Josa del Portillo the range of ‘Discover the Real Spain’ trips and tour aims to expose hidden gems to expats and holiday makers alike. Begoña has recently announced not one, not two, but three new festive trips to Spain’s iconic capital city, Madrid. The first trip will take place on 28th, 29th and 30th November and includes a panoramic tour of the city by coach and a guided walking tour. There will be plenty of time to explore the cultural heritage of this architectural hotspot, experience the Christmas lights or just shop till you drop. Accommodation will be at a quality hotel on the Gran Via and is on a bed and breakfast basis and the complete trip is priced at just 235e. The second option is exactly the same trip as above, including the tours, but this time for just two days on the 9th and 10 December and priced at 135e. The third option will take place on the 16th, 17th and 18th

December and once again will feature all the elements outlined above but also include a visit to the beautiful Imperial City of Toledo - which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site - on the 18th December where the group will be given a guided tour by a city native.

Meanwhile, the well-known and much loved ‘Wine Tasting with a Difference´ tours are taking the local community by storm and due to popular demand have now added more dates offering extra opportunities to see the vineyards in all their glory. These dates are: 7th and 22nd November. This tour is the perfect way to discover the wider region as well as sampling the delights of one of the most prestigious bodegas

and breweries in the area - Casa de la Ermita. This wine of this bodega has an excellent reputation and is very popular. Casa de la Ermita’s vineyards are farmed under the supervision experts to obtain the best grapes in the Jumilla region. On the way to the Bodega the group will stop for breakfast, which is included in the 25e per person price. On arrival at Casa de la Ermita you will visit the on-site wine museum which tells the story of wine making from a centuries old farming tradition and its evolution into a state-of-the-art science and from there the tour will continue into the brewery which makes artesian beers. The tours will be followed by a threecourse-lunch of traditional local and regional dishes and, of course, a chance to taste the wines of the Bodega before ending the day at the Casa de la Ermita shop, where you can purchase the delights on offer. To book you place on any of the above trips and arrange pick up call Begoña on 622 188 772.

Seagate Wealth Management

Are You An Orphan? I

f you are currently paying a financial adviser to manage your investments, but never sit down in front of your adviser to review your portfolio, then you are what we would call an orphan client. However good the funds looked when your money was invested, if the markets are not monitored and your funds assessed, then there is a danger that your money is not being managed to ensure the best possible returns. If your current adviser does not offer this service, then you might wonder why you are paying an annual management fee. Many people had endowment mortgages in the eighties and nineties and were told that at the end of their mortgage, there would be enough money left over for that dream car or holiday. Unfortunately, as the funds were not monitored, most people found they had a shortfall and needed to switch to a repayment mortgage. The above is simply an example of how important reviews of your investments are to ensure your goals can be realised. Seagate Wealth advisers all previously worked for Lloyds Bank and are used to providing their clients with the highest level of service. All our clients enjoy six monthly reviews where they can sit down with their adviser, review their investments and make adjustments where necessary if their goals have changed. This is also a good time to hear about new products and ask any financial questions. By getting to know each client individually, your Seagate adviser can fully understand your situation and this allows us to provide the best financial advice, not just for today, but forever.

Leaving your pet home alone For many owners, it would probably be a dream come true if they could spend their entire time at home with their dog, but unfortunately life gets in the way and leaving them on their own is sometimes inevitable. Even if you are retired there are times when you have to leave the house without your beloved pooch. A study of 2,000 owners, commissioned by dog supplement company, Lintbells, found that the average dog spends two hours and 47 minutes at home alone every day. As proof of owners' guilt, thousands of people admit to leaving their TV and radio on to keep their dog company when they are out, the research reveals – although we hope these owners will consider the energy and environmental implications of this decision! Many also leave extra bits of food out to treat their four-legged pal, while some get a neighbour to check in on them and others buy them a new toy as compensation. Top 10 things dog owners do when they leave their dog at home alone: 1. Leave the radio on for them 2. Buy them a new treat/bone/chew 3. Leave the TV on for them 4. Ask a neighbour or relative to pop in and see them during the day 5. Come home with a special treat to make up for being out 6. Leave them more food than usual

7. Leave them better quality food than usual 8. Install a dog flap 9. Buy a webcam to check on them 10. Use a doggy monitor The survey also revealed that owners feel a burden of guilt and sadness about leaving their pooch alone. Many try and make it up to their pet with an extra long walk or a play session as soon as they get home. However, according to the experts, leaving your dog alone isn’t a terrible thing to do and most pets do not feel stressed when this happens. I fact many simply take it in their stride. "Leaving dogs alone should be a normal experience for both the owner and their pet and shouldn't be something dog owners worry about," dog behavioural expert Dr. Emily

Blackwell PhD, CCAB said. "It is vital to introduce this time alone for your dog from a very young age, so that this becomes a normal part of life and their routine. This way its not unusal behaviour and not at all stressful for the pet. "Giving dogs a special treat when they are left alone can be a great way of making time alone fun." Always make sure your pet has food and water and that there is somewhere comfy they can sleep. If you are leaving them in the garden in summer they will need a shady spot or a kennel to escape the heat. And conversely somewhere to shelter if the weather turns bad. Some pets are nervous of thunder and fireworks, so try to think ahead if you know you have to leave your pet alone in these conditions.

One dead, four missing in torrential rains The recent heavy rains in Catalonia have claimed a victim after a man in his seventies was swept away by floodwaters when he tried to move his vehicle in Arenys de Munt, in Barcelona province. The body was discovered early last Wednesday at the beach in Caldes d’Estrac, in Barcelona province. The emergency services are currently searching for four more people reported missing: a mother and her son in Vilaverd (Conca de Barberà), whose prefabricated bungalow was swept away by floodwaters, and two more people in l’Espluga de Francolí (Tarragona). In the latter municipality, two bridges were swept away after the River Francolí burst its banks, as well as the Rendé Masdeu winery and a restaurant, both of which were located on the banks of the waterway. A young girl

sustained minor injuries in the Barcelona municipality of Gualba as a result of the extreme weather conditions. There have been travel disruptions as a result of the bad weather in northeastern Spain, with train services suspended between the

Barcelona municipality of L’Hospitalet and Salou in Tarragona, affecting the R16 line and long-distance services, among others. Wednesday also saw disruption to the Barcelona Metro system, with the green line not making stops at the Paral•lel station on its way to Zona Universitaria. The red line (L1) was suspended between

Espanya and Glòries and the L9 between La Sagrera and Can Peixauet. Flooding also caused a series of roads to be closed, with 43 separate incidents across the Catalonia region. Around 20,000 people were left without electricity today in Catalonia, 5,000 of them in Cambrils, Tarragona, according to the Civil Protection service, which received around 2,700 emergency calls this morning. Regional premier Quim Torra has announced that he will visit the affected areas on Wednesday. Tarragona province was one of the worst affected by the heavy rains, with a red weather alert raised by the AEMET national meteorology agency. The rainfall reached an intensity of up to 200 mm during the night, causing flooding and damage.

Hanoi

Its population in 2009 was estimated at 2.6 million for urban districts and 6.5 million for the metropolitan jurisdiction. From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political centre of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế, the imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyễn Dynasty (1802–1945), but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam, and it became the capital of a reunified Vietnam in 1976, after the North's victory in the Vietnam War. The city lies on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is 1,760 km (1,090 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City and 120 km (75 mi) west of Hai Phong city. October 2010 officially marked 1000 years since the establishment of the city. The Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural is a 4 km ceramic mosaic mural created to mark the occasion. Modern Hanoi On May 29, 2008, it was decided that Hà Tây Province, Vĩnh Phúc Province's Mê Linh District and 4 communes of Lương Sơn District, Hòa Bình Province be merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1, 2008. Hanoi's total area then increased to 334,470 hectares in 29 subdivisions with the new population being 6,232,940, effectively tripling its size. The Hanoi Capital Region (Vùng Thủ đô Hà Nội), a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under its administration, will have an area of 13,436 square kilometres (5,188 sq mi) with 15 million people by 2020 Hanoi has experienced a rapid construction boom recently. Skyscrapers, popping up in new urban areas, have dramatically changed the cityscape and have formed a modern skyline outside the old city. In 2015, Hanoi is ranked # 39 by Emporis in the list of world cities with most skyscrapers over 100 m; its two tallest buildings are Hanoi Landmark 72 Tower (336m, tallest in Vietnam and second tallest in Southeast Asia after Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers) and Hanoi Lotte Center (272m, also second tallest in Vietnam) Location Hanoi is located in northern region of Vietnam, situated in the Vietnam’s Red River delta, nearly 90 km (56 mi) away from the coastal area. Hanoi contains three basic kind of terrain, which are the delta area, the midland area and mountainous zone. In general, the terrain is gradually lower from the north to the south and from the west to the east, with the average height ranging from 5 to 20 meters above the sea level. The hills and mountainous zones are located in the northern and western part of the city. The highest peak is at Ba Vi with 1281 m, located in the western part of the region. Climate Hanoi features a warm humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa) with plentiful precipitation. The city experiences the typical climate of northern Vietnam, with 4 distinct seasons. Summer, from May until August, is characterized by hot and humid weather with abundant rainfall. September

to October is fall, characterized by a decrease in temperature and precipitation. Winter, from November to January, is dry and cool by national standards. The city is usually cloudy and foggy in winter, averaging only 1.5 hours of sunshine per day in February. Hanoi averages 1,680 millimetres (66.1 in) of rainfall per year, the majority falling from May to September. There are an average of 114 days with rain. Old Quarter Hoàn Kiếm Lake by night The Old Quarter, near Hoàn Kiếm Lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specializing in a particular trade, such as silk or jewelry. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân Market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing, souvenirs and food. Some other prominent places are: The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), site of the oldest university in Vietnam 1010; One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột); Flag Tower of Hanoi (Cột cờ Hà Nội). In 2004, a massive part of the 900-year-old Hanoi Citadel was discovered in central Hanoi, near the site of Ba Đình Square. Lakes A city between rivers built from low land, Hanoi has many scenic lakes and is sometimes called "city of lakes." Among its lakes, the most famous are Hoàn Kiếm Lake, West Lake, and Bay Mau Lake (inside Thongnhat Park). Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake, is the historical and cultural center of Hanoi, and is linked to the legend of the magic sword. West Lake (Hồ Tây) is a popular place for people to spend time. It is the largest lake in Hanoi and there are many temples in the area. The lakeside road in the Nghi Tam - Quang Ba area is perfect for bicycling, jogging and viewing the cityscape or enjoying lotus ponds in the summer. The best way to see the majestic beauty of a Westlake sunset is to view it from one of the many bars around the lake, especially the Sofitel Plaza rooftop bar. Tourism Hanoi is a very picturesque city, the leafy metropolis sometimes dubbed the "Paris of Asia." With its tree-fringed boulevards, more than two dozen lakes and thousands of French colonial-era buildings, Hanoi is a popular tourist attraction and one of only a few Asian capitals to retain its historic charm amid rapid modernization and population growth.

I want grandchildren My son got married 8 months ago, and quite rightly I expected to become a grandmother one day, so I asked him what their intentions were. He paused and sighed, and I knew something was wrong. He said they’d decided not to have children, as their careers were so important to them. I am furious because I know deep down this is not his decision. This is all his wife, although he says it is something that they both agreed on. He said if he’d wanted children, his wife said they would have kids, but he apparently said he doesn’t. They got a dog instead! I totally blame her. When he hesitated he said it was because he knew I would be upset by it. He said I’d have to be happy with the five grandchildren I already have by his brothers and sister. Things got heated and he said that it wasn’t the law that people had to have kids! I don’t know what else to do and have considered having it out with my controlling daughter in law. I wouldn’t advise any more interference. As disappointed as you are about the prospect of your son not giving you grandchildren, you may need to do as he suggests and be content with the grandchildren you already have. Not everyone is cut out to raise a family. It’s their choice and you must try and accept their decision. Remember this is their life, not yours. Take some time to really consider this development, and then put it to bed, otherwise you run the risk of never being at peace with it. And, is your daughter in law controlling? Are you unfairly blaming her for this? WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. Simply Pools was established in Spain in 2016 by Julian and Zoe. Julian has worked in the construction sector since finishing school and during the last ten years, he has worked specifically inthe construction of swimming pools. Zoe has many years of experience in business administration, customer service and translation, so provides a link between English speaking clients and the building team. Alongside Julian works his younger brother Ruben, who he has trained, and also David, another skilled builder. Simply Pools is based in Torrevieja

and share an office and showroom with Simply Doors. Zoe told us, “When we started the business, our main aim was to offer a good honest service with customer satisfaction in mind at all times. We only use top quality long lasting materials specifically for the construction of swimming pools. By viewing our customer reviews on Facebook and our website you can easily see how satisfied our customers are.” She continued, “Non Spanish speaking clients can easily communicate with us (with someone who speaks perfect Native English) without the worry of anything getting lost in translation. Clients deal directly with Julian and

"I would highly recommend Simply Pools to anyone. Juli, Zoe and the team were professional, efficient and incredibly helpful with the planning, design and build of our pool. We added on jobs and changed our minds and they could not have been more obliging. The pool looks fantastic and exactly how we had imagined it, I can't wait to get the whole family there to enjoy it." Carla Gregory

Zoe, there is no middle man or salesperson to complicate things.” Simply Pools deals with clients who want new pools built from scratch, but also those who already have a pool in need of repair. Zoe explained, “We are able to perform pressure tests on leaking pools and repair broken pipes. We also undertake various remodels including, new tiling, new one piece stone surrounds, LED remote control coloured lights, new pumps and filters as well as various design remodels. For example we have constructed a swim‐up bar with stools for one client. Jacuzzi benches and tables with seats is another popular option.” In terms of design, Simply Pools

offers a range of beautiful pearlescent tiles in various colours, large marble effect tiles and glow in the dark tiles, which really give any pool a stunning modern look. You can also customise the design of your pool tiles by adding custom mosaic pictures for the floor of the pool and border designs. On the technical side Simply Pools supply and install automated chlorine, salt and ph machines, swim up jets and a range of waterfall features. Heat pumps are another popular installation providing year round swimming. Made to measure pool covers help to keep dirt out of the pool and Simply Pools offer both the summer and winter type of cover.

"We can't speak highly enough of the service and quality of the end product provided by Juli and his team from Simply Pools. Our derelict pool needed complete restoration from metal work and concrete to electrics and tiling. All aspects of the work involved went like clockwork due to Juli’s organisational skills and the pool was completed exactly to schedule provided. The team were always on time, always left the site clean and tidy and always worked incredibly hard. The attention to detail was impressive. The pool and new surround exceeded our expectations and we would welcome anyone considering using Simply Pools to come and see this example of Juli’s expertise and craftsmanship. Our pool is truly beautiful. Thanks again Juli and all at Simply Pools." Brian and Carolyn Whittle

Grandma fears for family missing in Spain The grandmother of a 22-yearold British man who went missing in Malaga six months ago has travelled to Spain too look for answers. Liam Poole, of Burgess Hill in West Sussex, disappeared with his 46-year-old father Daniel on 1st April after leaving their luggage and passport in their hotel. Liam's grandmother, Kathy Catney, went to Spain with the BBC's Inside Out programme and visited the golf resort where the two men stayed. She told the programme that her grandson did not play golf and his numerous visits to the region made her suspicious.

CostaBlancaPeople 29th October - 4th November 2019

The Pooles went "to Spain to meet up with somebody, to do some sort of deal, whether that would be property, drugs, I really didn't know," she said. After the pair disappeared, Ms Catney said the family were contacted via a phone message from Morocco asking for a ransom of £100,000. The money was raised in hours, but there was no followup phone call or demand. While in Estepona, Ms Catney visited bars and asked them to display posters featuring photos of the missing men. She was rebuffed by one business.

"The barman, when I showed him the poster, he said he'd seen them and that they were both 'wrong 'uns', and that just upset me," she said. Ms Catney said she wants to know the fate of her eldest grandson and asked anyone with information to contact the authorities. "I do think Liam's died - I think he's been killed. "Where? I hope he's not at the bottom of the sea ... because I want the chance of someone giving me him back." British and Spanish police continue to investigate the disappearance of the two men.

3 COMMON MISTAKES BUYERS MAKE Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

When searching for your dream home, there are a few common mistakes that you the buyer make, which can ultimately jeopardize losing out on the purchase of your future home in Spain. Here are 3 of the most common mistakes buyers make, that are easily avoidable:

1

“We don’t have to decide right now. If it’s meant to be, it’ll still be waiting for us.” Thinking this is a big mistake, and whilst there are a good selection of homes to choose from, there are also a lot of serious buyers and investors out there, that are also looking at the same properties as you. So by the time you’ve made your decision, it could be too late! Disappointment, my house hunting amigos, is a feeling that could be completely avoided. If it feels right, why wait?

2

Aesthetics – Do you care too much for curb appeal? Everyone would like a home that screams “look at me,” but not everyone has the funds or

imagination to be able to transform a bland entrance into Buckingham Palace! Don’t drive past with your foot to the floor! This could be the “hidden gem” you’ve been waiting for. There are a lot of properties that are very deceiving from the outside, and need to be viewed from the inside, to appreciate everything it has to offer. Every house has a heart, you just have to look a little harder to find it sometimes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

3

It’s not all about the cash!Yes cash talks, but even if you need a loan, you could still negotiate a good deal. As long as you’re a good candidate for a mortgage, or have even been pre-approved, you can make an offer and complete in a few months. It may suit a seller better anyway, as they may need extra time to arrange the move while the bank is sorting out your funds. So don’t let it stop you putting your offer forward. You need to remember, the only person stopping you from making your dream a reality, is you! Job reviewing the world’s most luxurious homes Fancy earning £2,000 a week for reviewing luxury home across the globe? Then form an orderly queue as were guessing this job will attract a fair few applicants. An exclusive online marketplace, HushHush.com is recruiting a luxury home tester. The job application says the marketplace is on the market to recruit somebody to review properties before they are listed for sale. The properties will hit the market and be offered to some of the world’s wealthiest consumers. The successful applicant will be expected to submit a detailed report of each property, covering location, accessibility, style, comfort, and will be paid £2,000 per review. Some of the properties already listed on HushHush.com include a luxury Chateau on the French Riviera, a 25-bedroom Spanish villa, an oceanfront home in Florida’s exclusive Ocean Reef Club and a 14,000 sq. ft mansion in the Pacific Heights neighbourhood of San Francisco. Properties range in price, from £462,250 to £81,046,350. The site says that the role is needed to ensure all properties meet the requirements of its

affluent customers. The successful candidate will be required to travel to each of the chosen properties and put together a detailed report covering the property’s location, accessibility, style, comfort and suitability for the website. The job advert states that potential luxury home testers must have no previous criminal convictions, have an up to date passport and be willing to conduct reviews at short notice.

Applicants must also demonstrate reliability, a keen eye for detail and have demonstratable writing skills. After each week-long-stay, the reviewer will be expected to submit an 800-word account of the property, within five days of returning home. Offering one of the most exclusive marketplaces for high net worth individuals and VIP concierge services,

HushHush.com connects a growing list of the world’s most wealthy consumers with luxury brands and products. HushHush.com collates some of the best unique luxury products available, from superyachts and hypercars to luxury villas and private islands, and partners with sellers to reach their audience. Aaron Harpin, HushHush.com founder, said: "HushHush.com is one of the most premium luxury marketplaces in the world, and we’re passionate about keeping it that way. The volume and high price of the products we list onsite means the job of our reviewers and testers is absolutely essential – we want our customers to know that every item we offer is of the highest quality. “Due to an influx of properties for listing on the website, we need a luxury home tester to get on top of the growing stack of approval requests. The ideal candidate will have experience visiting or staying in luxury properties and will be able to demonstrate their ability to write compelling reviews. For many people this may seem like the job of a lifetime, so we’re expecting quite a few applications.”

Government agrees for Madrid to take in refugees A total of 635 refugees will be arriving in Spain thanks to an agreement between president Pedro Sánchez and the city council, with 200 of them due to be sent over imminently. The Secretary of State for Migration (SEM) visited the seven centres proposed by Madrid's local government on Sunday, and has approved four of them. Red Cross workers will join the team in helping the arrivals with their initial basic needs and setting up a programme to aid them in their quest for a new life in Spain. The Nuestra Señora de la Paloma residence in the Madrid satellite town of Cercedilla is ready

to move into, the SEM said, meaning the first 200 can be taken in straight away. Madrid is currently working on making the Red Cross III Pavilion on the Avenida de Portugal suitable for living in, so it can house another 85 refugees. Two disused primary schools have been signed off – the Antonio Gil Alberdi in the suburb of Moratalaz, and the Manuel Bartolomé Cossío in the central Latina neighbourhood - but the government says they will need a series of renovations first. These will be funded by the ministry for work, migration and social security. Another three proposed

centres were not approved as they were in 'a deteriorated state' and could not be adapted to make them habitable. The four agreed sites will be signed over to the SEM and the asylum seekers' settlement will be handled entirely by the department. Head of family, equality and social welfare for Madrid, Pepe Aniorte, says the SEM's agreement is 'excellent news', since it means 635 of the original 1,350 refugees the city had planned to take in can move in within weeks. But Aniorte says he hopes to see the government 'taking more steps' to allow for additional arrivals without too much delay.

Andre defends decision to play Jackson in stage musical Peter Andre has defended his decision to play Michael Jackson in the West End musical, Thriller - Live. The singer and reality star confirmed he will take the lead in the show for two weeks, but insisted it is “all about the music”. Earlier this year, Jackson, who died in 2009, was accused of sexually abusing Wade Robson and James Safechuck when they were young boys in the 90s. After the allegations

were made in the documentary Leaving Neverland, some radio stations issued blanket bans on Jackson’s songs. But on a recent episode of Good Morning Britain, Peter says people should focus on the music and put the allegations to one side. “I have always said that we’ve got to keep the music separate,” he said. “The reason I say that, one is because if you’re going to go there and say you

can’t listen to the music because there’s allegations, do you listen to the music pre any supposed allegations, where do you go with it? “Someone was listening to Rihanna the other day and there was a sample of a Michael Jackson song, and she was telling me she was unsure about listening to Michael Jackson. So where do you draw that line?” “This is still based on allegations. It doesn’t mean there’s no truth in it or

you can in any way ignore it. But we’re not at that point where we know what happened. “I love the music, this is all about the music.” The Jackson estate has vehemently denied Robson and Safechuck’s claims, describing Leaving Neverland as a “public lynching”. Jackson’s legions of fans - and some of his famous friends - have continued to speak out in support of the late

singer. Earlier this year, Madonna insisted “people are innocent until proven guilty” when she was asked about the allegations. She told British Vogue: “I don’t have a lynch-mob mentality, so in my mind, people are innocent until proven guilty. “I’ve had a thousand accusations hurled at me that are not true. So my attitude when people tell me things about people is, ‘Can you prove it?’

Strictly DEATH THREATS Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas has revealed she received death threats online after she and her fellow judges opted to eliminate DJ Dev Patel earlier this month. The dancing legend, who also said this year's series is the 'most unpredictable of all time', made the comments Jonathan Ross Show. Shirley, who was appearing alongside fellow judges Craig Revel Horwood, 54, and Motsi Mabuse, 38, on the ITV show, claimed a picture was posted online of her digging her own grave with a caption which read 'Die B****'. The abuse came after the judges unanimously opted to send home Dev, 34, and his professional partner Dianne Buswell, 30, following an unexpected dance-off against Viscountess Emma Weymouth and Aljaž Škorjanec on October 13.

Samhain, the Irish-Celtic festival of remembrance for the dead, is set to take place this week. The festival does seem to have been overshadowed by Halloween, but an Irish Samhain is still very much in evidence in many traditions. Samhain, pronounced sau-win and marks the end of summer, the end of the Celtic year and the start of winter. Samhain was considered a time for reflection. Traditionally, seasonal food played a large part in Samhain as the harvest was in and food plentiful. However, when Samhain eventually became known as All Hallows or All Saints Day, then eating meat was not allowed, so the food so became anything vegetarian. One of the most popular foods served with this festival is Barm Brack or Barnbrack as it is also known. Colcannon is still widely made in Irish homes around Samhain and Halloween – often with money wrapped in foil and hidden inside a as a ‘prize’ for older children. It’s always better to avoid this for the younger ones because of the obvious danger of choking. The word colcannon is from the Irish "cal ceannann," which literally means "white-headed cabbage."

Traditional Irish Barmbrack Barmbrack (or Bairín Breac) is an Irish Halloween tradition. The Halloween Brack traditionally contained various objects baked into the bread and was used as a sort of fortune-telling game. In the barmbrack were: a pea, a stick, a piece of cloth, a small coin (originally a silver sixpence) and a ring. Each item, when received in the slice, was supposed to carry a meaning to the person concerned: the pea, the person would not marry that year; the stick, would have an unhappy marriage or continually be in disputes; the cloth or rag, would have bad luck or be poor; the coin, would enjoy good fortune or be rich; and the ring, would be wed within the year. Nowadays barmbracks baked for Halloween still include a toy ring which is said to bring good luck to whoever receives it. Ingredients Makes one 900g loaf 225g plain flour 2 tsps of baking powder 375g packet of dried fruit mix 250ml cold tea 50ml of whiskey 125g light brown sugar 1 large egg 1/2 tsp of mixed spice A ring to place inside

Method Place the fruit mix in a bowl and pour over the whiskey and cold tea. Allow to soak up the liquid overnight. Preheat the oven to 170C/340°/Gas Mark 3, and grease and line a 900g loaf tin. Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar and mixed spice in a mixing bowl. Make a well and break in the egg, and using a wooden spoon mix the egg with the dry ingredients. Add a little bit of the liquid the fruit mix is sitting in and mix it through. You may not need all the liquid – you are looking for a wet dough. Then stir through the fruit mix until everything is thoroughly combined. Add in the ring and stir through. Spoon the wet dough into the lined loaf tin and place in the oven on the middle shelf and bake for one hour. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before removing from the loaf tin and placing on wire rack. Cover in cling wrap and tin foil and allow to sit for one to two days before cutting into it. Serve in slices spread with a little butter and nice cup of tea!

Colcannon 1kg potatoes, peeled, roosters work well 250g curly kale, well washed and finely sliced, discard any thick stalks 100mls milk 100g Butter (preferably Kerrygold Irish Butter) Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method: 1. Cook the potatoes in a covered pan of boiling salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. 2. Meanwhile, cook the kale. Heat a knob of butter and two tablespoons of water in a heavy-based pan with a lid. 3. When the butter has melted and formed an emulsion, add the kale with a pinch of salt. 4. Cover, shake well and cook over a high heat for 1 minute. Shake the pan again and cook for another minute. 5. Drain off any liquid and then season the kale with pepper. 6. Drain the potatoes, add in the milk and mash until smooth, then beat in the kale and the remaining butter. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Note: If curly kale is not available you can use finely chopped scallions which you add into the potatoes with the milk. Savoy cabbage also works well – use the same method as for the kale.

When you eat really does make a difference Sure, there is some truth to that old adage “you are what you eat.” But the latest research shows that when you eat can be just as crucial. Eating in tune with your circadian rhythms - a.k.a. your body’s inner clock that guides you to wake and sleep - automatically helps your health. You are getting fuel when you can actually use it and allowing your body to rest when it needs to. In fact, according to a 2015 study, ignoring these rhythms and eating at the wrong times - say, late at night - can raise blood sugar, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Want to understand meal timing a bit more? Here are the four key guidelines to follow. Eat during daylight hours. “Our bodies evolved to be primed for food during the day so that we’d have plenty of energy for survival,” says Dr. Roizen. This means your body is most sensitive to insulin - a hormone that moves glucose from your blood into the majority of cells, including your muscle cells, to be used as fuel - during the day. Your resistance to insulin is highest at night, when you’re less active and your body thinks it should be slumbering. As a result, you wind up storing most of the calories you consume in the evening as fat, Dr. Roizen says. But between after-work Spin classes and evening cocktail hours, you can’t always expect to pack in all your nourishment before the sun sets, especially during the winter months when it gets dark as early as 4:30 p.m. A

more realistic option: “Try to eat during a 12-hour window each day - for example, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and then go on kitchen lockdown after that,” says Pamela Peeke, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland and author of The Hunger Fix. Don’t skip breakfast. Research has found that morning eaters tend to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and less chance of having a heart attack or stroke. There are also weight-loss benefits: Women who took the time for a sizable breakfast (think eggs, toast, and fruit rather than a quickie bar) lost more weight after 12 weeks than those whose largest meal was at dinner, according to one study published in the medical journal Obesity. They also had lower levels of blood sugar, insulin, triglycerides, and hunger hormones such as ghrelin. In addition, nearly 80 percent of people who have successfully lost and kept off at least 30 pounds report eating this meal every single day, according to the National Weight Control Registry. All this said, if you can’t stomach a fullfledged meal before noon, don’t stress about it. The most important thing is to have something - even if it’s small - in your stomach within two hours of waking up. Just make sure your breakfast includes a mix of high-fibre carbs as well as protein to help curb hunger. Two of her favourite choices: a

slice of sprouted bread topped with egg and avocado, or Greek yogurt and berries. Have a hearty lunch. If a big breakfast isn’t your thing, then lunch should absolutely be the main meal of your day. Treat it how you’d normally treat dinner. Fill half of your plate with non-starchy veggies, and then divide the second half into lean protein and high-fibre carbs like sweet potatoes or quinoa. Even if you had a hefty morning meal, don’t skimp on lunch. Ideally, you’ll consume about 75 percent of your calories by 4pm. If you normally eat a salad, pair it with a fibre and protein-rich lentil soup, or add some nut butter and apple slices to your usual deli sandwich. People who ate their main meal at lunch lost more weight than folks who ate later, according to a 2016 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Eat a light dinner, and then close the kitchen. Since your

body is most insulin-resistant at night, you want to avoid carb-laden fare such as pasta or potatoes. Focus on a serving of lean protein paired with fibre-packed fruits and veggies. While earlier is better, if you end up occasionally eating at 8:30 or 9pm., that’s fine. Just have a snack a couple of hours before, so you don’t become so famished you wind up eating a huge meal right before bed. Whether you eat dinner earlier or later, try to avoid eating

anything after that. Late-night noshing has been linked to a bunch of bad health effects, including increased risk of both type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Healthy adults who were allowed to eat right up until bedtime had higher fasting blood sugar and cholesterol levels than those who had a hard stop at 7pm, according to a small 2017 University of Pennsylvania study. So by all means, watch what you eat. But don’t forget to keep an eye on the clock, too. It will be time wellspent.

World's secondmost expensive honey comes from Spain Europe’s most expensive honey – and the second-priciest in the world – comes from a village in the land-locked centre-northern province of León and will be presented at the International Organic Fair in Sweden next month. It is created via the cooperative in the village of Camponaraya, in the district of El Bierzo, and even has a waiting list – given that it is certified as Halal, meaning it is suitable for retail in Muslim communities, it has buyers throughout the Arab world and demand has far outstripped supply. Orders taken now cannot be met until at least the beginning of 2020. Its price tag of €150 per kilo means a standard supermarketsized jar could come in at between €30 and €37.50, or around 10 times the cost of massproduced honey found on the shelves. But when considering how much work is involved in honey production, even at €150 a kilo, bees should be demanding a pay rise. To create a kilo, nectar from over a million flowers is needed, so each standard jar bought from supermarket shelves contains the fluid from about 200,000 to 250,000 flowers, and to collect enough, bees need to travel around

7,000 kilometres (4,350 miles) – the equivalent of from Valencia to Miami or from the Costa del Sol to India. Another Spanish honey was granted the title of World's Best Lavender Honey in summer at the prestigious Great Taste Awards ceremony in London, widely considered to be the Oscars of the food world. Known as Nectarius de Origen Lavanda, the three-starred honey is hand-made, organic, and comes from the village of Cifuentes in the La Alcarria district of the province of Guadalajara, famous for its lavender festival and the bluishpurple tinge of its countryside, reminiscent of Provence. The great advantage to honey

is that it never goes off – even though jars carry a use-by date, this is only to comply with food legislation – and, if it crystallises, this is easily reversible by simply placing it in a saucepan of boiled, simmering water until it melts again and turns to liquid. In fact, honey which never crystallises is normally poorerquality: it means it has been pasteurised, which affects its flavour and properties; a process typically found in the cheaper versions. Honey is a highly-effective antibacterial agent, and specialists recommend it to help fight bacterial infections – in fact, vets even advise using it on animals' cuts to prevent infection and assist healing. It is said to aid in stimulating the immune system, help digestion and is ideal for a weight-loss diet as a substitute for refined sugar; although it does contain sugar, so should not be abused, and may not be recommended for diabetics. Honey is even said to assist in relieving some of the symptoms of the common cold – although, clearly, it does not cure it, since no cure has ever been found – hence the ancient remedy of hot toddies or hot lemon juice and honey during the winter sniffles.

“SAMM Stompers” Raise Funds for Kids Saturday October 12th, Caldero Day show ground Los Alcazares, every hour on the hour “Achy Breaky Heart” blasts out from the speakers. This is the signal for the “SAMM Stompers” to perform their fantastic line dance routine to the gathered audience. Twenty people in superb harmony, most dressed to impress in Stetsons and check shirts.

At the same time the “Bucket Brigade” circulates encouraging people to lighten the load in their pockets by dropping their loose change into the bucket. The

Donation to AECC Caroline Richardson and the ladies of the "Weigh-in Slimming Class" based at Restaurante Casa Mia in El Chaparral, Torrevieja donated more muchappreciated funds to AECC again in October. A coffee morning with raffle and cakes brought in an amazing €1739 to make the total raised to over €10,000 in the 8 years since they started. Another member on her own, Jackie McGee,

raised an additional €580 by walking a minimum of 10,000 steps daily for a whole month. Hospital volunteer Ann Bissett accepted the money from Caroline and the ladies of the group on behalf of AECC, thanked all the ladies present for their generosity and hard work and reminded them that AECC is always available to help and support cancer sufferers if needed.

numbers gradually grow until to between 100 and 120 people are dancing, so much so that Murcia Channel 7 TV filmed and interviewed the fundraisers Throughout the day many SAMM members and guests visit the SAMM pitch to partake of the fabulous fare on offer, basically hot dogs with lashings of onions and mustard and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. More members would have attended but many thought the day had been cancelled. At the close of play 650€ was collected especially for the children affected by the Gota Fria that hit Los Alcazares in September, with the priority spending being for replacement school books. Flu season is heading our way... You likely don't need anyone to tell you that having the flu is not fun. The fever, the muscle aches, the cough—they're all pretty miserable symptoms that can knock you out for days. However, life doesn't stop just because you're feeling under the weather. So how long exactly should you expect to be flu-like if you're hit with the virus? What can you expect if you're bedridden and when will you be able to get back to the daily grind? How long does the flu last? The short answer: three to seven days. Flu symptoms— muscle aches, high fever, a cough—usually appear one to four days after a person is infected. But even though you might be doing much better a week after becoming ill, it could take longer than that for all of your flu symptoms, such as a cough, to disappear. You might take longer to heal if you develop a complication because of the flu. Moderate flu complications include sinus and ear infections. More serious complications include pneumonia, brain or heart inflammation, sepsis, and multi-organ failure. So how long are you contagious? While you are most contagious during the first few days after symptoms appear, you can start spreading flu as early as the day

before your symptoms appear. Most adults who are otherwise healthy will no longer be contagious after about a week of having the flu. However, adults with chronic illnesses or problems with their immune system and young children who get the flu may be contagious for longer. How long should you rest after having the flu? While your body is battling the flu, you’ll likely be sleeping—a lot. But you shouldn’t necessarily jump right back into your normal routine if you go without coughing for a few hours. You should wait at least 24 hours after your fever goes away before exercising or going back to work. (This means without the help of fever-reducing medications like ibuprofen.) And

even if your fever goes away for at least 24 hours, you shouldn’t necessarily get right back to the gym, if your symptoms aren’t manageable yet. When you do get back into your fitness routine, try to take it easy at first. Flu can cause muscle aches and fatigue that can last for a variable amount of time so it’s best to start with light workouts when you resume exercising and gradually increase back to your normal exercise routine based on your energy level. A good way to avoid the annoying side effects of the flu, the best you can? Get a flu shot. Getting a flu shot can reduce your risk of getting the flu and although it’s not a guarantee you won’t get sick with flu, it reduces the chance of you getting a severe case.

Permanent fat loss Following hot on the heels of unrivalled success in the UK, Shaped my Meleah is now offering its ground breaking instant fat loss treatment here in the Southern Costa Blanca. Run by expert beautician Meleah, the ‘CoolSculpting’ treatment is based on Cryolipolisis or fat freezing as it is also known. This is a new procedure taking Hollywood by storm and involves the non‐ invasive cooling of body fat to break down fat cells, resulting in a reduction of body fat without damage to other tissues. The effect takes several weeks to be seen but the results are permanent and can result in up to 40 percent fat loss in one session. The procedure is non‐invasive, there are no long‐ term or significant side effects and anaesthesia and pain medication are not needed. During the procedure: • A vacuum applicator is placed on the skin to bring it into contact with cooling panels. • Patients feel a cold sensation for a few minutes, as it produces an anaesthetic effect. • The fat is cooled for up to 45 minutes. This treatment is specially designed to reduce areas of stubborn fat; it can target the chin, upper arms, ‘bra fat’, back fat, abdomen, flanks, underneath, buttock and inner and outer thighs. The treatment is scientifically proven to use cooling technology to safely and effectively eliminate fat cells. The method of freezing triggers fat cells to die and the body then naturally eliminates these fat cells. Four areas can be treated at the same time and

one session takes around 45 minutes to an hour. The most crucial part of this treatment is the aftercare, this requires the client to drink 2‐3 litres of water per day to flush out the dead fat cells. Results can be seen two weeks post treatment although the client will continue to gradually eliminate fat for up to 12 weeks, as long as the aftercare advice is followed. All clients must complete a consultation form as well as read and sign a declaration before any treatment can be undertaken. Shaped by Meleah is the only local specialist to offer this unique treatment; until now it was the preserve of leading clinics in Marbella and Madrid. Those wishing to discuss the treatment further or book a consultation can contact Meleah directly to discuss which clinic they would like to attend and the times she has available. Shaped by Meleah is open from10am until 6pm Monday to Friday and there is some flexibility for evening and weekend appointments but, these are limited and restricted to one clinic. To contact Meleah call 603 157 404, email: shapedbymeleah@gmail.com or find her on facebook or Instagram at shaped_by_meleah. Additionally, if you are a professional beauty salon, fitness or wellness centre and wish to discuss with Meleah the opportunity of her offering this treatment from you premises, then contact her on the above details. Her current clinics are located in San Miguel and La Fuente Centre but, she is looking to widen her reach across the region.

Japanese technique could help beat insomnia When it comes to getting a good night's sleep everyone’s ears prick up. Any new tips and tricks for nabbing those eight hours and keeping the dreaded insomnia at bay are always welcome. First there was model Elle Macpherson's dreamy three-step routine that promises the best beauty sleep ever and then the more practical military approach to drifting off in just two minutes and now the new technique on everyone’s pillow is 'Moon Breathing'. The genius Japanese breathing technique that promises to improve all areas of your life, including sleep, and instructs you how to break lifelong bad habits...scrolling through Facebook before bed anyone? Described in the new book, Kaizen: The Japanese Method for Transforming Habits, One Small Step at a Time, 'Moon Breathing' is all about calming your mind quickly, so you can stop those

thoughts of emails/work meetings/what you're getting the in-laws for Christmas in their tracks and fall asleep in record time. For the times when you can’t sleep, the system shares a short breathing exercise that the author finds helps her when it is 3am and my mind is racing with nonsense thoughts. The idea? To breathe using the Yoga

technique of 'Moon Breath' that consists of inhaling through only your left nostril. Sounds weird, but the left side of your body is thought to be associated with the nervous system, so this technique of breathing has long been used to calm and promote sleep. Simply lie down, close your eyes and use your right thumb to gently close your right nostril. Breathe in through your left nostril, then close it using your finger, and breathe out through your right nostril. Repeat for a few minutes until your mind has cleared and you're feeling distinctly more chilled. Still not feeling sleepy? Try the above, switching between alternate nostrils. This is called Nadi Shodhana or alternate nostril breathing and is a really simple way to quickly quieten the mind and settle your emotions, so is a useful exercise to have up your sleeve during moments of anxiety or stress. It really helps to focus the mind and press the reset button on your nervous system. Go on give it a go....

Hair issues solved... Faded colour, parched strands and split ends are just a handful of consequences of basking in the summer sun, but when the colder weather hits and the central heating is switched on, you’re likely to experience a host of new issues. What’s the best way to air dry your hair when it’s cooler? Microfibre towels ‘pre-dry’ your hair much better than ordinary towels, but to speed things up if you don’t want to sit around all cold, invest in a diffuser for your hairdryer. Simply place the diffuser above your head without touching your hair, bounce it around a bit, and the water will evaporate much faster. That way, you can air dry the rest easily.

What’s the best way to restyle your hair after being caught in a downpour? You can easily restyle rainedon hair with a leave-in conditioner. Spray it right on the hair and smooth it out with your hands and it’ll be transformed. You can also create a really nice sleek up-do with it. If that fails, go for the wet look. Grab some mousse, slick it back, and when it’s dry, just brush it out. How can you stop your hair from becoming dry and brittle after the summer? Split ends shrink like a prune and then literally crack, so using oil treatments is one of the best ways to revive hair. Hair oil lubricates the cuticle and allows it to open and close so that you

can seal it shut. Using products which contain amino acids and peptides (what keratin is made of ) will also glue them back together, but only temporarily, so go for regular trims. What’s the best way to prevent a flaky scalp? Hot oil treatments are amazing for your hair and scalp because they even out the hair’s porosity and help lift and dissolve dead skin. Your ends are always thirsty for lipids, too, so it’s a bit like a reboot for your head. How can you make your hair wash last longer? Dry shampoo. It’s not bad for your hair or scalp. Your scalp is so coated with sebum, which is one of the waxiest, heaviest substances. If you brush the dry shampoo through, it will absorb the natural oils and move them away. Always brush it through. Don’t spritz and go. Is there a way to shake hat hair off quickly? Any type of leave-in conditioner is going to resilken the hair and take out any kinks. Just spritz it in and run your hands through. Curls need more of a cream to hold it down, so if your hair is curly, scrunch upwards instead.

Heatcam exhibit alerts tourist to breast cancer A tourist discovered she had breast cancer after an interactive heat-cam exhibit revealed a tumour during a family trip to a museum in Edinburgh. Bal Gill, 41, caught the disease in its early stages following her visit to the Camera Obscura attraction in May, which prompted her to consult a doctor. When the British woman stepped in front of a thermal-camera display that shows which parts of the body are hot and cold, she saw one of her breasts was glowing yellow, the museum said. "I noticed a heat patch coming from my left breast. We thought it was odd and having looked at everyone else they didn't have the same," she said in a statement, describing the experience as "life-changing". Gill took a picture of the thermal scan

on her phone and sought medical advice after she returned home to Slough, west of London, which led to her diagnosis. She has since had a mastectomy and has been told she will not need chemotherapy or radiotherapy after another operation next month. Camera Obscura's general manager, Andrew Johnson, said the museum "did not realise" its exhibit could detect signs of cancer in this way. The tourist attraction houses a Victorian observatory as well as various other exhibits including a hall of mirrors. Thermal cameras are sometimes used by doctors to screen patients for breast cancer. However, the non-invasive method is not as effective in spotting tumours as mammograms, a type of XRay, according to the charity Breast Cancer Now.

Humans can land on Mars by 2035, NASA chief says NASA chief Jim Bridenstine has doubled down on his claim that the space agency will be able to land humans on Mars in the 2030s, going so far as to say it could even be done by the middle of that decade. "If we are accelerating the moon landing, we are accelerating the Mars landing," Bridenstine, NASA's Administrator, said during a panel discussion at the International Astronautical Congress, according to Space.com. "I suggest we can do it by 2035," he added. In April, Bridenstine said before lawmakers that NASA astronauts could be on the Red Planet by 2033, pushing up the timeframe, Fox 2 previously reported.

“We can move up the Mars landing by moving up the moon landing (to 2024),” Bridenstine told the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. “We need to learn how to live and work in another world. The moon is the best place to prove those capabilities and technologies. The sooner we can achieve that objective, the sooner we can move on to Mars.” Vice President Mike Pence also spoke at the IAC and said that NASA's Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon by 2024, is a stepping stone for an eventual mission to Mars. "With Apollo in the history books, the Artemis mission has begun, and we are well on our way to making NASA's

moon-to-Mars mission a reality," Pence said, according to Space.com. Pence added that America is leading the world when it comes to space, but does want to partner with other countries that have like-minded values. "To be clear, our vision is to be a leader amongst freedom-loving nations on the adventure into the great unknown," the vice president said at the conference. "The United States of America will always be willing to work closely with like-minded, freedomloving nations as we lead mankind into the final frontier." Indeed, Mars looms ever larger in America’s space future. In November 2018, NASA announced that it had selected the location where its Mars 2020 Rover will land on the Red Planet. The rover is expected to reach the Martian surface on Feb. 18, 2021. Although Bridenstine and NASA’s long-term goal are to send a manned mission to Mars in the 2030s, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin thinks that a slightly later target date of 2040 is more realistic. In an interview in 2016, Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, told Fox News that by 2040, astronauts could visit Mars’ moon Phobos, which could serve as a sort of stepping stone to the Red Planet. Aldrin said in July that he was "disappointed" with the progress America's space program has made over the past 50 years while at the White House in July to celebrate the 50thanniversary of Apollo 11.

Free Windscreen Wiper Blades Document Check If you have a chip or crack in your windscreen you really need to get it fixed as soon as possible, as it could lead to potentially dangerous situations. The good news is though that now has never been a better time to have it repaired or replaced as Carglass® Spain has launched a campaign whereas they are offering free Bosch wiper blades with every repair or replacement windscreen between now and November 24. This campaign is to promote road safety on two levels. On the one hand, to ensure that all vehicles on the road have windscreens in perfect condition. The windshield is a key element in the safety of a vehicle: for visibility, for its contribution to the structural resistance to the car and because it is the support on which the passenger airbag is deployed in case of impact. A windshield in poor condition could break and not support the roof in case of overturning, or smash when receiving the force of the airbag when it is deployed. In addition, most modern cars carry ADAS security system cameras on the windshield, which must be recalibrated at each replacement. On the other hand, wipers in poor condition affect visibility in case of rain, can ruin a trip and even cause an accident. According to various studies, the risk of an accident when it rains is 70% higher. It is the reduction of visibility, and not wet asphalt, which is the main culprit of the accident rate in the rain. According to the sociological study of the Foundation for Road Safety, FESVIAL, 75% of drivers admit to driving or having driven with windscreen wipers in poor condition or with a dirty windscreen. In addition, 6 out of 10 drivers do not check when getting in the car that their windscreen is clean and allows good visibility. And more than 70% do not change wipers with the recommended frequency.

Carglass® recommends frequently checking the condition of the windshield and wipers, which should be replaced at least once a year; or even more frequently if you are a high-mileage driver. They also recommend applying rain treatment on the windshield. It has been demonstrated by various studies that hydrophobic treatments improve visual acuity and are particularly beneficial at night. Here are the 10 Carglass® rain visibility tips 1. Keep the windscreen in good condition, without damage and clean. 2. Keep the wiper blades in perfect condition. 3. Apply a rain repellent treatment on the windshield, such as the one offered by Carglass®. Hydrophobic treatments have been shown to improve visual acuity and

that they are particularly beneficial at night. 4. When it rains, the windows tend to fog faster. Dirty inside glass makes it fog more easily and makes it more difficult to defog. This is also important in the side windows, which allow us to see through the exterior mirrors. The most effective thing is to put the ventilation in its specific function (the one that directs the air towards the windshield), with the air conditioning and the recirculation, in addition to the heating.

5. Turn on the lights to see and be seen. In extreme conditions, activate the rear fog lights and do not forget to turn them off when the weather improves, so as not to disturb others or receive a fine. 6. "Read" the asphalt to look for puddles or streams that can cause wateracne, and to detect its grip: a light asphalt that reflects light has less grip than a dark one that does not reflect light. 7. Increase the safety distance. This will give you more reaction time in case of unforeseen events and will reduce the suspended water that lifts the vehicle that we carry ahead. 8. Look at the lights of the cars that precede us, because they help us know where the road is going and if there are unforeseen events that force them to stop. 9. If visibility is reduced so driving is impossible, stop in a safe place. Until you find that place, move forward alternating the front view with closer glances to the left and right looking for the road lines. 10. Be attentive to the vehicles around us, especially trucks and buses, as they can lift large amounts of water when passing over puddles. Look well ahead before advancing or crossing hem, so you know what will happen during those seconds in which vision is lost. If we receive one of these large splashes by surprise (especially when they come from the opposite direction), stay calm, avoid sudden braking, and maintain your position. Carglass® is the leading company in Spain in the repair and replacement of vehicle windows of any brand, model or age. Having operated in Spain for 20 years, it has more than 220 centres and 90 Mobile Workshops with integrated systems to cover the entire national territory with its more than 1,300 People. In 2018, the company performed 650,000 moons repair or replacement services.

We have been out and about visiting various locations giving road safety talks, and one question which still pops up is, “what documents do I have to carry in the car?” When you drive a vehicle on Spain´s roads, it is compulsory for you to carry certain documents with you in the vehicle. These documents must be the originals, not photocopies, although a notarised copy is accepted (a version which has been copied by a notary and contains their official stamp).

You must carry: Permiso de Circulacion The Permiso de Circulacion is similar to what we might refer to as the log book for a vehicle, which contains information such as the number plate, the vehicle owner and other details. The ITV Card An official document which relates to the technical inspection of the vehicle, the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV. Some very new cars may not have this card as it is gradually being replaced by a centralised computer system, but if your car has one, it must be carried. ITV Report Once your vehicle is 4 years old it will have to undergo the mandatory ITV test. The ITV report details what happened during that inspection. There are also some documents which are not compulsory, but it is advisable that you carry them with you too. Insurance Policy Carrying the insurance policy is NOT compulsory as the information is contained on a

central computer, however, if you are involved in an incident you will need to know your policy details for the Accident Agreement, to exchange details with others involved. European Accident Agreement Again, it is not compulsory to carry the European Accident form, but it is advisable as it will help you ensure data is recorded correctly in the event of an incident. The forms are available in multiple languages and a laid out the same, so it also makes it easier for bridging language gaps. It is also not compulsory to carry the information relating to the annual tax paid to municipal town halls. You, as the driver, must also carry your driving licence. It is a criminal offence in Spain to drive without a licence and the burden of proof is on you. If you are caught without your licence you may well find yourself arrested. Remember, it is mandatory that the documents you carry are the originals, not photocopies. The only copy that is allowed is one that has been stamped and certified by a Notary. Notarised copies of documents are allowed, but that is the only exception.

Lighting Up Time As the clocks went back at the weekend it is a timely reminder that we must use our headlights during the hours from dusk until dawn, and during poor visibility. It is also worth remembering that Daytime Running Lights are not classed as headlights and are inadequate for driving at night. There are two main reasons for this, the first being that these lights are designed to give the vehicle a higher visibility to others, such as pedestrians or other road users, illuminating the vehicle as it approaches, not for lighting the way ahead. The second reason is that generally Daytime Running Lights only illuminate at the front of the vehicle, for reasons we explained in in the first point. Daytime Running Lights are a vital addition to road safety as studies on the use of this lighting show, according to the EU executive, road users including pedestrians and cyclists, more clearly detect vehicles equipped with daytime running lights than those who do not have this device. There are certain times and locations

when you must turn your lights on during the day, these locations are indicated by a white pictogram of headlights on a blue circle sign. You will see these as you approach tunnels for example. In addition, during the winter months when the sun is lower and visibility can become problematic as a result, the DGT recommend having headlights on during the day to achieve the same increase of visibility as is achieved through the DRL. Under normal circumstances however, there is no mandatory requirement to have your headlights on during the day, and that also applies when driving through road works. Article 104 of the Reglamento General Circulacion, refers to the use of headlights during the day, and explains how you do not have to turn on your lights when there are road repairs on the road, but details the situations when it is compulsory. All vehicles travelling on a reversible lane, sometimes called a bi-directional lane, which can at times be used by traffic in either direction. These sorts of lanes are common near to city centres, where the

flow of traffic can alter to give more space for vehicles in one direction, such as towards the centre of the city at the start of a working day, and then away from the city at the end of the day. Although the accessibility of the lanes will be clearly marked, there is a risk to other road users and so increased illumination is of benefit. A circumstantial additional lane, such as when a lane is created with a series of cones to avoid an obstruction or to improve the traffic flow in one direction. These “circumstantial” lanes are often created at busy holiday times, allowing the road management to create extra lanes to ease congestion at certain times, such as when many people are expected to leave a city to go on holiday at the coast, for example. They are also often used to bypass an obstruction that may pose a problem for the normal flow of traffic, such as a broken-down truck that is disabled and cannot move. A lane normally used by traffic in the opposite direction, known as a contraflow. These lanes are frequently used on motorways.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Was it the best Friday night top flight performance since Arsenal in 1989? By Leicester, I mean - obviously not by Southampton.

many of the Southampton fans to be honest - 3-0 down in the torrential rain, ten men on the pitch and you’ve touched the ball about five times. I’d have been tempted to call it a night and see if I could get home in time for

keeper Gazzaniga was in inspired form to keep Spurs ahead for so long. But only for so long because, do not forget, Poch’s lot don’t do winning away from home in the Premier League anymore. Captain Hendo levelled it up before Serge Aurier

seen it balance out when they were already 4-0 down, so it was a bit of a waste, really. The same goes for Jay Rodriguez’s thunderstrike - 4-0 down, mate. What’s the point? Manchester City leapt above Leicester into second-place once more, following a second-half only win over Aston Villa. Are you seriously telling me that Dave Bassett hasn’t had an influence on the English game when you watch back City’s first? Graham Taylor would have also had a small smile on his face from above having seen the directness in that one.

Leicester’s resounding 9-0 hammering of the Saints has led to some Southampton fans musing that Ralph Hasenhuttl ‘is the worst Austrian ever’ now, I am not sure I can get on board with that, but the Alpine Klopp is certainly having a tough old time at St Mary’s.

Villa need to find out who needs their palms greased with silver to get a VAR decision go in their favour. Once again they were on the wrong side of a clearand-obvious error as Raheem Sterling was offside for City’s second. Of course, Villa wouldn’t have won but they would have felt good about something finally going their way.

Has a situation ever gone from badto-worse quicker than how things escalated in this one? In the 12 minutes between the score being 0-0 and 0-3, Southampton completely fell apart with Bertrand being sent off and their players feeling the need to assist Leicester City scorers. I mean, credit to EastEnders. Those that did nick off early should have hung around as they’d have seen more than their money’s worth of goals. Hasenhuttl fronted up to the cameras and took ‘full responsibility’ for the ‘atrocity seen on the pitch - but how can he, really? Yes, he picks the team and the shape but is it his fault that Ryan Bertrand took leave of his senses and Yan Valery seemed to think Southampton were playing in Blue? After he has said, ‘and lads, don’t forget to defend’ and they clearly forget, what else can he actually do? Having suggested on Friday that all James Ward-Prowse does is hang around waiting for a free-kick in a dangerous area, it was quite nice to see James Maddison put in a shift and curl in a beauty. Top four for the Foxes? Probably not. Top six? You can put your house on it. Southampton to go down? It’s hard to think otherwise right now.

Up until a minute before kick-off at Anfield, you had to wonder whether Mauricio Pochettino actually wanted Spurs to lose given the team he’d picked to start the game. 90 seconds later, all that kind of talk was banished as Harry Kane found it easier to score before Virgil put him in his pocket than after. There probably hasn’t been such a fine Gazza performance in a Spurs shirt since Gascoigne in the 1991 FA Cup Semi Final, but Tottenham’s back-up

went peak Serge Aurier into the back of Sadio Mane’s heel, giving Mo Salah the chance to win it from the spot. If you are a fan of stats telling us some of the story, you cannot deny Liverpool deserved all three.

So, were Man United a little bit better or are Norwich absolutely woeful? United should have been 4-0 up by halftime but even without Paul Pogba on the

Portuguese manager to call it a day? Bournemouth seem to have stopped scoring goals and it probably wouldn’t have been a major worry if they’d been playing anyone other than Watford. Up on Tyneside, people far more sensible than I were questioning the decision to give goalkeeper Martin Dubravka a six-year contract last week. With Newcastle by no means certain to be in the same division next season, let alone with the same manager (or even the next one) it seemed a bit of an oddity to start looking that far into the future. Especially now, after he cost Steve Bruce three points against Wolves, going all flappity-flap deep into the second half and allowing Jonny to equalise. Sean Longstaff is starting to feel the pressure of his brother being more popular than he is, getting a red card to make the last ten minutes more defensive than usual for Newcastle. To be fair to Arsenal’s centre-backs, they may not be the finest at defending but when it comes to putting the Gunners 2-0 up against Palace within ten minutes they are world class. The

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea had been warned by Frank Lampard that it would not be acceptable to relax after their win in Amsterdam on Wednesday night. Whether Frank was talking more generally or actually warning his players against the perils of a relaxing night in Amsterdam is not clear, but they certainly did the business in Burnley on Saturday night. Many thought that a trip to Turf Moor would tell us even more about Lamps’ yoof and it certainly did - they need to be taken very seriously indeed this season. Pope was trumped by a Christian as Pulisic grabbed his long-awaited chance with both hands scoring what some

people are claiming to be the perfect hat-trick. Now, I do not want to overwater Pulisic’s front garden, but can it really be a ‘perfect’ hat-trick if one of them deflected in? Surely the point of perfection is exactly that - it has to be perfect. Burnley’s VAR decisions have now balanced themselves out after Callum Hudson-Odoi’s terrible attempt at conning a penalty was overturned by the video officials - sadly for Burnley, they’ve

pitch they love to miss a Premier League penalty, Tim Krul denying both Rashford and Martial from the spot. The two strikers got over it sufficiently to find other ways on to the scoresheet and United have leapt up to the David Moyes-esque dizzy heights of 7th in the table. Spurs are in the bottom half, but it’s much more cool to talk of United in crisis still, isn’t it? Hey, Jordan Pickford - if you line up a defensive wall with a gap so you can see what is going on, I think the idea is you stop the ball if they wallop it through that gap, no? I know Pickford can, allegedly, pass the ball out from the back quite nicely but is he the most overrated English goalkeeper since, well, Joe Hart? Talking of vastly overrated and also paid by Everton, Michael Keane has had better months. We can argue all day whether VAR were right to overrule and give that ankle tread as a penalty - but Keane is probably wise to look three times before crossing the road right now, such is his luck. What about Lucas Digne, who some Evertonians like to suggest is the best left-back on Merseyside? He’s certainly clinical from five yards, that’s for sure. The clock said 90+4 when Everton managed to self-combust and throw away another lead under Marco Silva at Brighton who, in the main, thoroughly deserved another win under Graham Potter. How much longer will the Everton board put up with Silva, and could Bill Kenwright put that £1m he has prepared to give Bury to better use, like paying the

problem is, Arsenal only really seem to be good for ten minutes at a time this season (or anytime in the last four or five) and Palace found themselves back in it courtesy of VAR deciding (rightly) that Wilf Zaha isn’t a naughty little diver and was in fact fouled by Calum Chambers. Yellow cards reversed and everything. Not being so fair to Arsenal’s centrebacks, we always suspected Palace would find a way of getting level because of Arsenal's centre-backs. We also suspect that Granit Xhaka hasn’t increased his popularity at the Emirates, given his reaction to the sound of booing as he was subbed. Emery’s two biggest decisions as manager of the Arsenal are to back Granit Xhaka with the armband and to refuse to believe that Mesut Ozil even exists - neither are making him look like a genius right now. Manuel Pellegrini might have been misquoted when he claimed that Sheffield United ‘just played direct’ but he certainly wasn’t misquoted when he claimed West Ham should have won the match against Chris Wilder’s team - and he was wrong on both counts. Put it this way, if even Paul Merson knows that Wilder’s side pass the ball then Pellegrini might want to have a word with his scouts. The game finished 1-1, United remaining unbeaten away from home and Lys Mousset looking like he may well be one of the shrewder signings this season. Still, at least all that Carlos Tevez stuff is in the past.

Las Ramblas The Ancient Golf Society Marinas Walking Mike Mahony and Olga Douglas had a great start to their week. Having been paired together in our ‘2 ball better ball’ competition on Monday they took the spoils with a tremendous 47 points. Close behind them with a score of 44 points (which would normally be enough to win) were Bryan Neal and the ‘evergreen’ Reg Akehurst. On Wednesday it was the third and final round of our ‘Championship’ Medal. Winner on the day, with a nett score of 70 was Olga Douglas who was followed home by Trevor Pullyblank with a nett 72. Mike Chapman was in the frame with 73. There were three ‘2’s today going to Dave Pulling, Ron Phipps and Liz Robertson. Mike Mahony’s and Olga Douglas’s run of form continued. With the best two cards out of the three to count Mike took the overall men’s title with nett 146 whilst Olga came out top in the ladies section, also with 146. Mike only just triumphed over Mike Chapman on countback! Rachel Lee was the ladies runner up with a nett 148. Our week ended with a 6x6x6. Winners with 87 points were Jan Svendsen, Nick Lee, Yvonne Phipps and Nigel Price. Just one point behind them were Marleen Billen, Graham Murray, Richard Connock (another plug) and the fictional Albert.

Football Team

The Ancient Marinas Walking Football Team started playing in February 2016 on the Football pitch in La Marina Urbanisation, but in September of that year they moved into San Fulgencio and play at the Football Stadium every Friday between 4pm and 5pm. The players must be aged over 50 and the cost is one Euro per person. The emphasis is on fun and friendship and is not to be taken too seriously. Around 20 players participate each week, but the numbers can vary depending on people's availability. The team always welcome new players to join us. The team play friendlies against local teams and also participate in tournaments. After each game the players meet at our sponsors bar, The Lounge bar on La Marina Urbanisation for well earned refreshments. The Lounge bar also provides a superb buffet when visiting teams come to play us. For further information regarding the Ancient Marinas Walking Football Team please contact Ron Nowland on ronchris@live.co.uk

further damage following their littering with rivulets during September’s DANA. DANA 2 was substantially more respectful than its predecessor. The damp conditions did, though, mean that buggies were not allowed on fairways, which meant a few members had to drop out. This seems a shame as we all look forward to our Wednesday’s with SMGS, and one wonders why, especially on the 11 old holes, it was not possible to enter fairways at right angles from the cart paths. The course had drained really well and quickly, and this could, one

SMGS at Vistabella A shotgun start at 9 a.m. (without the shotgun it seemed, at least from the distant hole 17 tee box) saw 37 members and 5 guests take on a course that has become a permanent SMGS monthly fixture. The Monday night and Tuesday day rains had done little damage. Only bunkers remained sodden, and waste areas appeared to have suffered even

Concerning the actual golf, as always at this course some great scores were posted. Mike Greatorex led the way with a superb 41 points, closely followed by guest Lee Parsons with 40, and Keith Wickham with 39. This author paused alongside the par 3 11 th to watch a spectacular offgreen holing by the latter. Having been beaten by him in the relevant category, perhaps the buggy should have been revved up at the moment just before contact. It would have made little difference. Keith clearly likes Vistabella, having won his category there on more than one occasion. Finally, a mention for those in Gold. It is amazing, going back through past results, how close this category always is when playing Vistabella. On one occasion all four prize winners were only decided on countback. This time three tied runners-up, with Danny Toft just capping the rest as winner by a point, ahead of Norman Cahill, Mark Prestonand Andy Shaw. Congrats to the

The day’s prize winners were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Mike Jordan (33), 3rd Norman Padmore (34), 2nd Brian Butler (35) and 1st Keith Wickham with 39 points Silver Category: 4th Ken Flaherty (34), 3rd Mike Kaylor (37), 2nd Charlie Harkin (38) and 1st , with the day’s best score of 41 points, Mike Greatorex Gold Category: 4th Andy Shaw (36 on CB), 3rd Mark Preston (36 on CB), 2nd Norman Cahill (36 on CB) and 1st Danny Toft with 37 points Nearest the pins on par 3’s (Sponsored by Property Shop): Hole 2 Noel Bannon, Hole 7 Lee Parsons, Hole 11 Roger Brierly, Hole 15 Russ Bailey Abacus (Sponsored by Mike IPTV Kaylor): Roger Brierly Best Guests: Lee Parsons (40) beat Alistair Gordon (35) in to second place Our thanks go to all Vistabella staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at Altorreal, the following week at La Serena for the first round of this season’s Bogey’s Shield. HOCKEY: HALCONES TOP THE LEAGUE

The senior team from Torrevieja Halcones won 7-8 in Villarreal and ascend to the top of the Autonomous League. Torrevieja is now at the top of of the Autonomous League in the senior category after its hurried 78 victory against opponents Villarreal on the fourth day of the championship. The Alicante team played hard to win the match at Melilla Pavilion, after reaching 4-3 at half time. Two triple goal scorers of Nacho del Rey and Christian Mader plus goals scored by Benjamin Pfeifer and Álex Ruiz to achieve a new triumph, the third in four games, allowing Halcones to look at their rivals from above at this stage of the competition. The three points gained at the weekend give Torrevieja nine

points, both HC Castellón and CP Villarreal, stand in the table with 6 points each, although these teams have played two and three games, respectively. On this fourth date of the championship, which took place between Villarreal and Nules for Halcones it also saw games played by juniors, juveniles and the infantiles of the blue and white Torrevieja based club. The juniors, with three goals from Ander Herranz, beat Villarreal 0-3, while the juvenile lost 5-3 despite two more goals from Ander and a third by Matus Badura. Meanwhile, in the Infantil category Halcones were victorious 2-4 against the Taurons de Nules with two goals from Pedro Tallón and two from Axel

Bratshaug. This day also included two matches between CP Villarreal and Thunders of San Vicente del Raspeig, a club in which several Halcones also play. Thunders Alevin with Etienne Iglesias in their ranks, lost 16-0 and the females lost 8-1 in a match played by Paula Celdrán and the sisters Sofia and Camila Roselli. Sofia was the scorer of the Thunders goal. The day before, it was the Torrevieja's Benjamin’s who took to the pitch to play against CP Hockey Session Mislata unfortunately despite it being a tight game they lost 3-2 with Daniel Bowen and Nehuen Solla scoring the goals of the "Halconcitos".
