Maritime festival arrives in Torrevieja The Mayor of Torrevieja was joined by the president of the Nao Victorial Foundation earlier this week as they opened the III Maritime Festival in Torrevieja. The event is open to the public until November 10th and also marks the 5th centenary of the first round the world trip which was undertaken by Magellan in 1519 and finished by Elanco in 1522. The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, and the president of the Nao Victoria Foundation, José Fernández de Cabo, presided over the opening of the event which has already been held in Seville and Almeria, where it received more than 15,000 visits.

The mayor thanked the Nao Victoria Foundation for its presence in Torrevieja for the great tourist attraction of having two spectacular boats docked in the port as part of the festival - the Nao Victoria and the Galleon Andalucía. He also congratulated the Foundation for the great work it does in the restoration, conservation and maintenance of historic ships and that, thanks to the agreement that is being drafted between the City Council and the Foundation – which could be completed in December - The Pascual Flores ship will be transferred to dry dock to perform all the work needed to restore it to its former

glory. The intention of the City of Torrevieja is that Pascual Flores becomes a tourist and historical museum that, in addition to being docked here, can also travel the world as an ambassador of Torrevieja. The Nao Victoria (at the festival, visitors can see and board a replica of the original ship from the early 1500s) brought Magellan and Elanco on the first circumnavigation of the planet. It is a pine and oak ship, measuring 26 metres in length and boasts a number of impressive sails. The replica, which has been built under rigorous control of historians so as to fully represent the original ship, has travelled tens of thousands of nautical miles and has visited dozens of countries including the US, France, England, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Lithuania or Poland, arriving in more than 50 ports and receiving thousands of visitors. The Galleon Andalucía accompanies the Nao, and is a replica of the famous Spanish galleons that for centuries united Spain with America and the Pacific. An imposing vessel of 55 meters in length, iroko wood and pine, 930 m2 of surface area and seven sails. The

Andalucía is an authentic floating museum of Spain’s maritime culture. In 2010 it travelled from Seville to the Shanghai Expo in China and in 2013 he

crossed the Atlantic to spend more than four years in America, arriving in Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico, USA and Canada, and stopping in more than 70 cities such as New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Miami, San Juan de Puerto Rico, Toronto and Quebec. VISTOR INFORMATION Until November 10 Place: Fishing Pier - Puerto de Torrevieja Schedule: Open Monday to Friday from 9am - 7pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 7pm Tickets: adults € 8 // Children (5 to 10 years): € 4 // € 20 Families (2 adults + up to 3 children from 5 to 10 years) // Free for children under 5 years. The Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre in Torrevieja will host ‘Innovation Week’ from November 15th. The event is aimed at those interested in creativity, motivation and entrepreneurship and a variety of activities are planned. The Councilor for Development, Employment and Local Development, Vicente Chazarra, announced that the event is being held in collaboration with the University of Alicante and AGAMED. Activities include talks on the marketing of rock music, practical workshops for creating your own business projects and the annual Hackathon (the latter taking place on November 23rd and 24th). This year’s Hackathon focuses on smart tourism with participants being given a 32 hour window to develop new ideas, services or applications. “You will all have seen that the EU has agreed the UK’s request for a further extension. This means that the UK will not now be leaving the EU on the 31st of October. The extension sets a new deadline of the 31st of January 2020. I met with some of the citizens’ rights groups here in Madrid and we talked about recent developments, about the continuing feeling of uncertainty and about the concerns of British nationals living in Spain. The three month extension removes the immediate threat of no deal and provides an opportunity for the deal which protects citizens’ rights - to be ratified. For as long as we remain in the EU, UK nationals will retain their full EU citizenship rights. So if you are a UK national living in Spain now, nothing will change on the 31st of October. The current rules on registration, healthcare and travelling will remain exactly as they are now. However it is still important to be prepared for Brexit. The extension period is a good opportunity to make sure you, your friends and family are fully prepared. So I would encourage you all to use this time to ensure you are correctly registered as resident in Spain and registered for healthcare. And to ensure that you have exchanged your driving licence and checked your passport validity. Secondly, I’m sure you have seen in the

Mayor hears residents’ concerns Torrevieja Mayor Sr Eduardo Dolon and Councillor for Foreigners Gitte Lund Thomsen joined the recent meeting of the Torrevieja West Neighbourhood Watch & Residents Group to discuss local issues. The packed meeting sought responses on the very strong concerns of residents at the spate of burglaries that have occurred in the area over the last month. With 17 reported break-ins and thefts and several walk-in thefts from houses by intruders, many residents are very concerned for their safety and security. Some members stated that it was not always easy to make a police report of theft and some reports made to the police were sometimes not followed up. Members sought more information on the ability of the local police to patrol the area when they had no patrol car but little reassurance was provided until future budgets are approved. It had been hoped the Guardia Civil would attend the meeting to give an indication of their action in response to the recent burglaries. The meeting asked if the CCTV system could be used to help identify thieves and this will be reviewed in the next budget. There was an amount of

discussion on the build up of green waste and dumping in the streets that is blighting the area and which the waste contractor is allowing to build up into large piles of rubbish in the roads. The mayor advised that a new waste contract was imminent which will include new and improved waste bins and more frequent collections. The mayor also stated that there were plans to increase the fines for illegal waste dumping but that residents should notify the town hall where they have evidence of illegal dumping. Residents should also use the town hall reporting system for disposal of large waste items such as mattresses and furniture. There were complaints that all the street lighting in the area on the right side of San Luis

lakeside had not worked for a number of nights. There are a number of concerns about the large numbers of tourist coaches that park near the pink lake and allow their passengers to wander to the lake and the amount of rubbish they leave in the street . The mayor re-iterated that the completion of La Siesta park will be a future budget consideration. A number of members complained about the recent police orders stopping music being played outside in Plaza Tolosa in the evenings which seemed to have been unfairly enforced, restricting both the bars’ incomes and the residents’ evening enjoyment. The next meeting will be on the 25th November when there will be wine, a choir and a free raffle.

Also visiting recently was a handball team from Norway which played a friendly against Torrevieja youth team.

Illegal dumping in Torrevieja

News

CostaBlancaPeople 5th - 11th November 2019

The Local Police of Los Montesinos "has observed in recent weeks a massive poisoning" of cats in specific areas of the town centre. Among the poisoned animals were a number of felines that "had been part of the towns sterilisation campaign promoted by the City Council." The City Council, which has reported this problem to residents through its Facebook site, and has assured people that the Local Police is investigating “what happened and to identify those responsible” and warns that this practice “can be constitutive of a crime typified in the Article 337 of the current Criminal Code”. Anyone found guilty of animal abuse can face between three months and one year in jail. The City Council explained that "the law does not consider cats that are in the urban centre of the town as feral, it considers them to be domestic and gives them the same consideration as a

pet. In fact, some of the affected felines were not stray at all, they were domestic cats, whose owners have found their pets dead in the street. The municipality has provided the police with further details such as the number of poisoned cats and the areas in which the dead animals have been found in order to help the police try and find those responsible. Authorities have pointed out that the poisonings occur in the vicinity of the urban colonies of cats and is asking that residents do not leave their dogs to run loose because they could be poisoned as well.

Escaped prisoner arrested in Orihuela Costa

The Civil Guard has arrested two dangerous criminals accused of committing five robberies with violence armed with knives, among other crimes. The arrested was made in Orihuela Costa and one of those arrested was a prisoner who escaped from a Madrid jail. He has 45 records, five arrest warrants and imprisonment and three judicial requisitions. Officers of the Judicial Police of the

Civil Guard in Pilar de la Horadada arrested the suspects after the alarm was raised in Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, where the criminals had robbed a pharmacy, a real estate, a hairdresser and an office of an electric company over recent weeks. They are also accused of a fifth robbery and the theft of a car in Novelda. The assailants entered armed with knives and stole money and any valuables. They also demanded the victims give them the pin numbers to their cards and the keys of their cars. Investigators located the suspects' car near a shopping centre in Orihuela Costa and initially arrested the accomplice. A few hours later the officers located the escaped prisoner when he got out of his car to go to his home. The property stolen in the robberies have been recovered.

New buggy for Daniella A working group has been formed to control the recent spate of illegal dumping. Torrevieja hit the headlines this week when it was revealed that as many as 9000 mattresses were dumped in small separate amounts at local bins. Keen to demonstrate that the issue is being dealt with, the town hall has drafted a new ordinance which will increase maximum penalties for illegal dumping to 26,830 euro. Since the establishment of the waste working group, 69 fines have been issued for a total amount of 6,303 euro. The working group is made up of four local police officers. Councillor for urban cleansing, Carmen Gómez Candel revealed that very soon digital platforms will be available for citizens to make reports of illegal dumping via social media. ALreayd, citizens can report such incidents via email (with photos where possible) to: porunatorreviejalimpia@gmail.com Councillor Gómez Candel also requested citizen collaboration for the collection of oversized waste items (a free service) by calling 966 70 23 90.

Help to vote The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) and Proteccion Civil will, in a new town hall initiative, help people with reduced mobility exercise their right to vote in Torrevieja. The service will run during the forthcoming general elections on November 10th and will see the Cruz Roja ambulance being used to bring people to polling stations. The service will be provided for free to all citizens with the right to vote and is aimed specifically at the elderly, infirm or those with mobility problems. All of those who wish to avail of the service should make a request directly to the Cruz Roja by calling 965 711 818. The same service will be provided by the Civil Protection of Torrevieja, which can be requested up until Election Day itself. Requests to make use of this service can also be made by phone to 965 710 250 (extension 3752) or 607 823 408.

A 14-month toddler with a terminal illness has been given a new buggy after kindhearted locals raised more than 800e at a charity event held at the Sea View, Playa Flamenca. The special needs buggy arrived recently and has been given to Daniella’s Mum Nikki. After suffering a haemorrhage whilst still in the womb Daniella was born practically blind and due to the trauma part of her brain hadn’t developed properly. This left her with multiple disabilities and epilepsy. Later tests revealed that she has the rare Mitochondrial Disease PDHA, which is incurable. Daniella was given a lifespan of just 2 years, but having joined a global

support group with mums all over the world, Mum Nikki is hopeful Daniella could live up till the age of 10. If you would like If you would like to help this brave little girl you can check out ‘Team Daniella Sixx’ on FaceBook.

Continued from page 3 left-wing independents Podemos, running in coalition with United Left as Unidos Podemos, had burst onto the scene with the latter coming from nowhere to net five European Parliament seats in 2014. The far right in the shape of Vox appeared as a very real source of competition in the elections in April, which the PSOE's Pedro Sánchez had called to seek a mandate for governing after just 10 months in power following a no-confidence vote against the reigning PP due to widespread corruption charges against high-ranking members. Now, the five has grown to six, with Podemos breakaway group Más País! ('More Country'), led by former member Íñigo Errejón expected to win at least a handful of seats with his prosocial policies that include a 32-hour working week instead of the current 40 hours and a minimum wage and State pension of €1,200 a month. Whichever party gains the most seats will have to be prepared to work with at least one or even two or three others in order to form a government – and, as they only have two months from the date of an election to reach a deal before they are forced by law to take the country back to the polls, doing so is going to be the only way to prevent Spain from being months or even years without leadership. Non-Spaniards who are

resident in the country are not permitted a ballot, as is the case in every nation on earth, participation looks set to be at its lowest ever on 10th November. Registration for postal votes is only at 30 percent of those who are eligible, according to the latest electoral office figures. Meanwhile, in the UK election fever is also sweeping the country with Boris storming towards a 12th December election, the first Christmas election since 1923. This sees British voters heading to the polls for the fourth time in less than five years. The official campaign will begin tomorrow – Wednesday 6th November – after Parliament is shut down. However, the promises and pledges have already started with the Government announcing the benefits freeze will end in 2020 and Labour vowing a massive home improvement programme to cut energy bills and reduce carbon emissions if it wins power. Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage has confirmed that he will not be standing as a candidate and the Lib Dems have made a formal compliant after ITV says its head-to-head election debate would only include the Tories and Labour. Farage has been a harsh critic of Johnson's deal but has called for an election pact with the Conservatives, even as the prime minister ruled out such a deal. "I ruled out a pact with everybody because I don't think

that it's sensible," said Johnson. "What I can say respectfully to the leaders of all other parties is, alas, the only likely consequence of voting for them, rather than for us as Conservatives is that you're making it more likely that you will thereby get (Labour leader) Jeremy Corbyn". Brexit delay It may be full steam ahead for political party elections, but Brexit has moved further away following the latest ‘Brextension’ which has now been set for 31st January 2020. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has already apologised for not taking Britain out of the European Union by 31st October as promised, saying it was matter of ‘deep regret’. Johnson had vowed he would rather be "dead in a ditch" than tolerate another extension to the tortuous Brexit process, which began in 2016 after a knife-edge public referendum. He blamed Britain's failure to leave as scheduled on 31st Oct on parliament passing what he called the "Surrender Act". This demanded that the government ask for, and accept, a delay from the European Union rather than leave without the deal being ratified. MPs gave provisional support for his deal, but derailed Johnson's plans to get the bill through parliament before the deadline day, leading him to push for the 12th December election to break the impasse. For further details on Brexit delay see ‘Open Letter’ article on p3.

15th Solidarity Calendar Local historian Andy Ormiston has once again produced the Costa Blanca Solidarity Calendar. The calendar features beautiful photography by Phil Friar of the Costa Blanca region. Thanks to the support of corporate sponsors, the production of the calendar is entirely paid for which means that when Andy gifts the calendars to local groups and charities, they can then sell them on and keep 100% of the proceeds for their individual cause. For this reason, many charities were invited to the launch of the calendar, which once again took place at Aroca Sequier Abogados. Unfortunately due to illness, Andy couldn’t be there in person at the presentation of the calendar and had invited Costa Blanca People editor Aoife Leddy to preside over the event on his behalf.

Copies of the calendar are now available for sale and with an RRP of €6 per copy, it is estimated that this year’s calendar will raise €15,000 for local charities and that so far, the calendar has raised in excess of €100,000. The calendar wasn’t the only ‘good news’ on the day of the launch. Miguel Angel Aroca, a dedicated supporter of Andy’s solidarity calendar for many years took the opportunity to reveal a €24,000 donation to the Yayasan Sahaja Sawah Foundation – a nonprofit established by Torrevieja businessman Bernard Van Elmpt who has been involved in charity work in Bali since 2008. A short video was shown on the work done so far

by the foundation which includes thea purchase of an ambulance, many water purification systems and much more. More information on the work being done by the foundation can be found at: https://www.sahajasawah.org/ Also in receipt of donations on the day were six local charities

which received €4000 each – Nueva Fraternidad, AFA, APANEE, The Stroke Association, ECCH and Paul Cunningham Nurses. All of these substantial donations were made possible by an agreement between Aroca Sequier Abogados and Cambridge Global Payments – instead of earning commission on money transfers, Aroca Sequier gather the money to be used for donations. Andy’s solidarity calendar will be on sale from most local charity outlets – simply choose which cause you would like to support and if you buy the calendar directly, all of the proceeds are donated to that cause.

Latest opinion poll gives Socialists over 30% of the vote The Socialist Party (PSOE) would be the clear winner of the upcoming November 10 general election, with 32 percent of the vote and between 133 and 150 seats in the 350-seat Congress, Spain’s lower house of parliament. That’s according to the latest poll released today by the public CIS research institute. The latest CIS poll is the best result that the PSOE has seen in the recent surveys. The conservative Popular Party (PP), meanwhile, which saw its worst result ever at the 28th April general election, is predicted to take 18.1 percent of the vote, according to the survey released recently. This would be an improvement on the last election, and would give them between 74 and 81 deputies in Congress.

Pedro Sánchez

Unidas Podemos would come in third place with 14.6 percent of the vote, and between 37 and 45 seats in Congress, a similar result to the 42 seats it took in the April election. And Ciudadanos would come in fourth with 10.6 percent of the vote, and between 14 and 21 seats in Congress. In April it won 57 seats at the ballot boxes. Far-right Vox is predicted by the CIS poll to take 7.9 percent of the vote, which would give it between 14 and 21 seats – in April it took 24. The survey was based on 17,650 interviews, carried out in 1,091 municipalities in 50 provinces, as well as Spain’s North African cities Ceuta and Melilla. The margin of error is plus or minus 0.75 percent for the entire sample.

Prosecutors harden position on Spanish ISIS women Spain’s High Court, the Audencia Nacional, is hardening its position on what to do about the women who travelled to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), as the government delays its decision on whether to repatriate them to Spain. Speaking last Thursday at the Elcano Forum on Global Terrorism, Miguel Ángel Carballo, deputy chief public prosecutor at the High Court, said that “these women have a great ability to indoctrinate others, especially minors,” irrespective of whether they traveled to Syria as the wives of ISIS fighters or to join ISIS ranks. The four women – Spaniards Lubna Miludi, Yolanda Martínez Cobos, Luna Fernández Grande and Moroccan-born Loubna Fares – left Spain for Syria, and are now being held in the Al Hol and Al Roj camps in north-eastern Syria, along with a total of 17 biological and adopted children. All of the women claim they followed their husbands to the conflict zone without realising what they were getting into. A further 248 people – including 30 women – are estimated to have left Spain for Syria to fight for ISIS. Of this figure, 150 are Moroccan, 48 from Spain and 50 from other nationalities, according to data from Civil Guard Commander Cristina Andrey, from the Intelligence Center for CounterTerrorism and Organised Crime (CITCO). Andrey, a specialist in jihadist terrorism, said at the forum that 133 may still be in Syria, 68 have died, and 47 have

returned to Spain. Experts at the talks, titled Foreign fighters: The Phenomenon and The Responses, agreed that the repatriation of former ISIS fighters presents a big challenge for European countries. The lack of a legal framework for what is a relatively new situation is compounded by scant concrete results from the few existing de-radicalisation and reintegration programs. This has contributed to the reluctance of European Union members to repatriate their citizens from Syria – a position that is in conflict with international humanitarian law. Spain’s Secretary of State Ana Botella said on the forum that most EU countries had “no intention of repatriating [fighters] en masse,” and would instead evaluate each situation “on a case by case” basis. Botella said she would “prefer” that the fighters face court in Syria, but not be subject to the death sentence. Just weeks earlier, however, Spain’s caretaker foreign affairs minister, Josep Borrell, told the European Parliament: “If they have pending cases with the justice system, we will ask for them to come here,” in reference to the three Spanish ISIS women. The High Court has issued international arrest warrants for the three Spanish women in Syria for “participating in terrorist activities before moving to Syria,” according to Botella. In total, the High Court has issued

international arrest warrants for terrorism activity against 70 people, including 13 women, two of whom have returned to Spain, said Carballo at the forum. “The solution to the problem presented by these women lies in what facts can be proven, if there is no sign they were involved with jihadist activity before leaving [for Syria],” said Carballo. “Why did they go, what was their intention, what did they do there?” Criminal code Under the recent changes to Spain’s criminal code, just the intention to go to a conflict zone is considered a crime but Spain’s lack of jurisdiction in Syria is an issue. “We have won more cases for belonging [to a terrorist organization] than for the crime of moving [to a conflict zone],” said Carballo. Indeed many sentences for the latter have been absolved by the Spanish Supreme Court, he added. “There have been many sexist sentences that acquit a woman of being a drug trafficker, scam artist or jihadist, based on the protective and outdated idea that women are either instruments or victims of violence, and that is not always the case,” explained Carballo. “A trained indoctrinator is able to commit attacks,” and a “five-year-old boy could already be indoctrinated and be an indoctrinating factor in schools,” he added.

Town Hall technician saves hikers life Fell runner has raced up a mountain side for more than 20 minutes armed with a defibrillator in order to save an expat hiker, who was suffering a suspected heart attack. The experienced runner raced to the peak of Tossal del Moro in Gata de Gorgos, Northern Costa Blanca, followed by a Policía Local agent to administer the potentially life-saving electric pulse to the Belgian walker. The man was then airlifted to safety by

helicopter to Benidorm Hospital. A spokesperson for Policía Local praised the ‘selfless act’ of the fell runner, who turned out to be a technician in Gata de Gorgos Town Hall’s department of sport. The incident happened last Sunday after the Belgian men set out walking with a group of hikers up the 300m-high Tossal del Moro mountain between Gata de Gorgos and Benissa. The experienced walker felt fine when he set off but became ill suddenly.

TM contributes 50,000€ to the Red Cross TM Real Estate Group has shown its ‘solidarity and support’ with those affected by the September DANA in the Vega Baja contributing 50,000 euros to the Spanish Red Cross to mitigate the damage caused to the people affected across the 27 municipalities that have suffered the consequences of flooding. The company, which is closely linked to the Vega Baja from where it originated, is adding this monetary contribution to the temporary use of 50 homes for people who were left homeless as a result of the rains. The agreement was signed recently at the provincial headquarters of the Red Cross in Alicante in a meeting in which the president of TM Real Estate Group, Ángeles Serna, presented the donation to the provincial president of the Red Cross, Francisco Galvañ. Ángeles Serna said: “It is essential for us to contribute to well-being and provide value to

the society where we carry out our business, more so in catastrophic situations such as those caused by the floods. That is why we want this collaboration with the Red Cross to help restore the personal and housing situation of as many affected families as possible.” The president thanked the Red Cross for the work they are doing through their emergency plan. The provincial president of the charity organisation, Francisco Galvañ, thanked TM Real Estate Group for ‘trusting the Red Cross to be the vehicle and the means through which to convey it’s solidarity with the people and families affected by this natural catastrophe’. He also explained how the priority of the Red Cross is ‘focused on the detection and analysis of the most immediate needs of the affected families, as well as support for projects for improved employment and the general restoration of livelihoods’

and acknowledged that this solidarity contribution will help the Red Cross reach more people and more families. This initiative reaffirms the support and commitment of TM to the local area and endorses its contribution to the development of the areas where it has business interests. The donation forms part of its firm commitment to Corporate Responsibility in which the group has taken important steps in the last year with its Adherence to the Global Compact and commitment to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Within the emergency plan for the Vega Baja activated after the floods, the Red Cross is working in the post-emergency phase with the objective of supporting those affected, in coordination with the different municipalities in direct contact with the municipal social services and the local branches of the Red Cross in each of the localities.

Brit arrested after blaze at cannabis farm A fire at a cannabis farm installed in a Costa Blanca urbanisation has led to the arrest of a 48-year-old British man, alleged to be behind a string of illegal plantations. Fire-fighters rushed to the house in Altea back in July when a clandestine farm in the basement was wiped out following an electrical fire. Police were able to gather information from the property registry and locate the criminal gang at a new cannabis farm in Crevillente. A swoop on the isolated property saw the arrest of two Montenegrin men, one of whom tried to flee through the roof. The discovery of another cannabis farm in San Fulgencio led police eventually to the British man, whose role was in seeking out ideal locations to install the clandestine plantations. During the months-long operation police recovered 4.5kg of packaged marijuana buds, 1,369 marijuana plants, counterfeit documentation, mobile phones, a vehicle and an entire clandestine electrical installation consisting of: circuit breakers, lamps, turbines, coolers, filters, condensers, air conditioners and wiring. The seized plants have a street value of around €400,000, while the value of electrical installations is estimated at €60,000. The three men have been remanded in custody without bail.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

A

fter the drama of last week, which saw sterling lose an average of 0.4% against major rivals, confirmation of the 31st January extension to the Brexit deadline provided some relief. The fact that the extension paved the way for a General Election means that there is further volatility on the horizon, but the receding threat of no-deal provided some support to the pound. There was little in the ecostats to push the pound further; the CBI's Distributive Trades Survey improved ten percentage points on the month to -10%, despite record high stock levels coinciding with flagging sales, but the market’s focus was on political matters. House prices were up 0.2% on the month and 0.4% on the year, according to Nationwide's index in UK house prices. The Bank of England's Money and Credit report showed consumer credit running below average while mortgage borrowing was little changed. The focus was all on the announced date of the General Election of the 12th December. As the Hallowe’en deadline came and went, sterling was 12.6% lower against the US dollar and 11.3% down against the euro from its pre-referendum levels. Compared with the original date of 29 March those losses are 1.1% and 0.5%. However, perceived progress in negotiations and push back against the threat of no deal have meant that since the end of September the pound has strengthened by 5.1% and 3.1% against the dollar and euro, with an average gain of 4.2% and no losses. How the pound performs in coming weeks is

likely to be linked to the progress of political campaigns and indications of what the 12th December may bring in terms of Brexit and the domestic economy. As several EU leaders came to the end of their tenure this week, there was a muted picture across Europe. The French PMIs showed a "solid increase in activity at the start of the fourth quarter" while, to the east, the "downturn in [the] German economy continues as employment falls for first time in six years". French consumer confidence was unchanged at 104 in October, Spanish retail sales increased by an annual 3.4% in September but Italian producer prices were 1.7% lower on the year. The PMI for the euro zone as a whole was "mired close to stagnation” and the European Commission's confidence measures were little changed in October. The euro did manage to make gains against the US dollar, approaching a 10-day high following the third interest rate cut from the Fed. There were indications that further cuts were unlikely, and the US dollar was under pressure due to a worsening economic outlook due to the risks posed by the trade war, which contributed to declines by the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields. The gains were due more to a weakness in the greenback than any positive developments for the euro, but depending on how events play out in the UK and US, there may be more opportunities for gains despite the economic slowdown.

Arrested for recording five women Costa Sports Centre to reopen in the bathroom of his house under private management National Police have arrested a 22-yearold in Valencia for allegedly recording five women without their consent when using the toilet at his home. Investigations began after police learned that a woman had been recorded, without her authorization, in the bathroom of the suspect's home. Investigators made a search of the

suspect’s home and seized a mobile, a tablet, a laptop, a memory stick and two memory cards. After analysis of the items, police found that four other women had also been recorded without consent. The detainee, a Bolivian man without a police record, was detained while investigations continue.

The Municipal Sports Centre (CDM) in Orihuela Costa will be managed and maintained by a private management when it reopens after its closure more than six months ago. This was announced recently by the Councillor for Sports, Víctor Bernabéu, who said that the technicians from the Town Hall are working on the tender to award a new company the contract. This update was given at the last Plenary

meeting when the Councillor was questioned by a large group of residents of Orihuela Costa who demanded its reopening and who displayed banners damning its closure. On behalf of all of them, Josefa Herguezabal demanded the public management of the CDM and the opening of the pool and other facilities. She also asked to match rates to other sports venues in the city, to which the Councillor gave his promise.

Wallapop hacked The popular mobile sales application Wallapop unexpectedly crashed on Saturday after admitting that it suffered a hacking attack on its servers. Wallapop warned users in an email via the app itself that the next time they enter Wallapop they will find their account closed and will have to reset their password for security or choose to access their account through Facebook or Google. Wallapop stores information about its users’ purchases, sales, location and, if they are subscribed to the payment service, Paypal accounts. The company says it has "no evidence that any of the data has been compromised or there has been fraudulent use of information.” The app, founded in Barcelona in 2013, has between 10 and 15 million users each month who use it as a buy and sell service, mostly for second hand items.

Seagate Wealth Management

Are You An Orphan? I

f you are currently paying a financial adviser to manage your investments, but never sit down in front of your adviser to review your portfolio, then you are what we would call an orphan client. However good the funds looked when your money was invested, if the markets are not monitored and your funds assessed, then there is a danger that your money is not being managed to ensure the best possible returns. If your current adviser does not offer this service, then you might wonder why you are paying an annual management fee. Many people had endowment mortgages in the eighties and nineties and were told that at the end of their mortgage, there would be enough money left over for that dream car or holiday. Unfortunately, as the funds were not monitored, most people found they had a shortfall and needed to switch to a repayment mortgage. The above is simply an example of how important reviews of your investments are to ensure your goals can be realised. Seagate Wealth advisers all previously worked for Lloyds Bank and are used to providing their clients with the highest level of service. All our clients enjoy six monthly reviews where they can sit down with their adviser, review their investments and make adjustments where necessary if their goals have changed. This is also a good time to hear about new products and ask any financial questions. By getting to know each client individually, your Seagate adviser can fully understand your situation and this allows us to provide the best financial advice, not just for today, but forever.

Best air purifying plants for your home Houseplants not only liven up the interior of your home, but they can actually improve air quality and make your space healthier, too. Believe it or not, multiple scientific studies site some serious health benefits that come from decorating your home with live botanicals. They promote overall wellbeing by boosting your mood and making you feel calmer, and certain plants can even remove toxins from the air. Now that’s some serious home décor multi-tasking. In 1989, NASA studied how plants can purify air while looking into whether or not humans could live in space for long periods of time. The study found that many common varieties of houseplants are effective in eliminating toxins, like formaldehyde — a chemical used in some building materials and in the production of certain household products that has been linked to cancer — in controlled spaces. A more recent study, conducted in 2009 by the American Society for Horticultural Science, also found that some plant species can remove VOCs (volatile organic pollutants, like benzene and trichloroethylene) from the air. If creating a healthy indoor environment that’s free of toxins is your main goal, there are specific houseplants to invest in for serious air purification. B.C. Wolverton, Ph.D., one of the original scientists who worked on NASA’s study of air purifying plants in the 1980s, determined the best plants for removing toxins in the air based on four distinct criteria: Their ability to remove chemical vapors, how easy they are to grow and maintain, their

resistance to insect infestation, and their rates of transpiration (evaporation of water from plant leaves). Additionally, Vadoud Niri, Ph.D. lead a similar study in 2016 investigating if houseplants could remove VOCs from indoor air, and found that some plants were more effective than others at doing the job. Based on these conclusions here are some of the best indoor plants that are scientificallyproven to purify air. Keep scrolling to shop these healthy houseplants and introduce a bit of greenery (and cleaner air!) into your home. Areca Palm (Chrysalidocarpus Lutescens) This palm tree thrives in bright spaces and is perfect for sprucing up any room in your home. It’s an eye-catching, lush houseplant that’ll look good while absorbing air pollutants. Spider Plant Comosum) Effective at

(Chlorophytum removing

toxic

substances from the air, this small spider plant delivers major results. Plus, the wild, elongated leaves add a trendy boho-chic look to any space. Lady Palm (Rhapis Excelsa) Because this plant is slow-growing, it makes for a long-lasting houseplant that looks stylish to boot. It features multiple bamboo-like trunks and removes toxins like formaldehyde, ammonia, xylene, and toluene from the air. Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica) This tropical tree thrives in medium to bright indirect sunlight, and is sometimes referred to as the rubber plant since it produces a latex sap that was once used to make rubber. Although it looks a bit synthetic, rest assured that it is real, and it’ll help clean the air in your home. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum Wallisii) One of the most popular (and widelyused) indoor air purifying plants, the beautiful Peace Lily is part leafy plant and part delicate flower. Although it looks elegant and gentle, the plant means business when it comes to removing toxins—like benzene and formaldehyde—from your home. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis Exaltata) Another plant that would look lovely in a hanging planter or perched high up on a shelf where its thick leaves can grow on full display, the Boston Fern is easy to care for and actually thrives indoors (unlike many other plants). It simply requires regular watering and a light misting every now and then to decorate your home while it cleans the air and boosts your mood.

British woman seeks rare surgery in Spain A British woman with a rare condition that means a simple turn of her head could be fatal is hoping to travel to Barcelona for pioneering surgery. Rachel Pighills, 33, and her husband Guy, 39 have been trying to raise the €150,000 necessary for her rare condition to be operated on – only three surgeons in the world know how to do it, and one of them is in Spain. She explains that, in layman's terms, her neck cannot withstand the weight of her head, and if she turns her head to the left, she could partially dislocate the cervical column in her neck. If it dislocates completely, it would be 'like an internal decapitation', says Rachel, and she would 'die instantly'. Guy says he worries all the time when he is at work. Rachel wears a collar, but only for four hours a day, since any longer would mean losing muscle mass in her neck and head, which would exacerbate the problem. Her condition is known as Basilar Invagination, which means the upper part of her cervical column pushes against the base of her skull. She also has an atlantoaxial instability,

or compression of the spinal cord, making it difficult to move her neck, and platybasia, a developmental deformity of the base of the skull which flattens it and pushes the vertebrae into it, and cervical medullary syndrome, which is

Rachel Pighills caused by her craniocervical instability and brainstem compression. Rachel urgently needs a double operation – firstly, to remove the axial vertebra which is compressing her brainstem, and secondly, to fuse her skull and neck together. So far, she and Guy have saved up €14,000 towards her

operation, which cannot be carried out in the UK as no surgeon there is able to perform it. But the thought of the flight to Barcelona terrifies the couple – an abrupt movement by the aircraft could cause a dislocation. They say they are 'trying to stay strong' for their young son's sake. The supermarket manager says: “I'm thinking about the pressure in the cabin, the force of take-off and being trapped against the back of a chair – and I don't know how my body's going to react.” She was diagnosed in July, and says she 'just wants to live a normal life' with 'a bit of independence'. “I'll be at work and scared to death thinking, what am I going to find when I get home? Will she be okay?” Says Guy. Their trip to Barcelona will take four days, and it is not clear whether Rachel will be able to undergo the operation during this time or whether more cash will be needed. If she has surgery and all goes according to plan, her complex and life-threatening condition will be completely cured.

Welcome to Podgonica

Besides being the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica is also the country's largest city, having a population of some 200,000 people. The city is situated in central Montenegro, in the scarce Montenegrin lowlands between Dinaric Alps and Lake Scutari. The Podgorica area has been continuously inhabited since the Illyrian and Roman eras, with settlement on the site of today's Podgorica being firmly established during Ottoman Empire rule. Podgorica was reincorporated in Montenegro in 1878, when the city started to take a more European shape. Nazi and Allied bombings during World War II destroyed much of the historical Ottoman and Montenegro-era Podgorica architecture, and city was reborn as the capital of Montenegro in Socialist Yugoslavia (SFRY). The city was then rebuilt and expanded in a manner typical

of Eastern bloc countries, so it is mostly a modern planned city, and by no means a principal sightseeing destination. While not a typical European eye candy, the city is definitely worth visiting, owing to its interesting mix of old and new, its café culture and nightlife, and its laid back Mediterranean atmosphere. Both Montenegrin coastal cities and its mountain resorts are within one hour's drive from the city, so it is an excellent starting point for day trips to anywhere in Montenegro. WHAT TO SEE • Old Turkish town called "Stara Varoš" ("old town"), with its mosques and old clock tower. A typical old turkish "kasaba"(town), with narrow and curvy streets. Frankly, there are only few sights in this old town, in comparison with other cities in Montenegro. • Skaline (the stairs) on the outfall of the Ribnica river to Morača, with its old turkish bridge over the Ribnica, and the ruins of old Nemanja's town. • Monument to King Nikola in the park across the street from the Montenegro's parliament. • Hercegovačka pedestrian street in the city centre. • Trg Republike the central square of the city, next to Hercegovačka street, a lot of life at the end of the day, when people finish to work. Lot of cheap restaurants and

friendly people, a pleansant place to spend the first part of the evening. • St. George's church, built in 10th century, on the slopes of the Gorica hill (hill after which the city was named.) • Millennium bridge, the impressive new bridge over the Morača river. • King Nikola's castle, turned into a museum (closed on weekends), and the surrounding park. • Newly built Hristovog vaskrsenja orthodox temple. • Rimski Trg, the square in the new part of town. Located near the orthodox temple, the square and the surrounding area is the home for the trendiest of Podgorica cafes and restaurants, and favourite meeting point for Podgorica citizens. • War memorial in the park on Gorica Hill.

Burdened with a secret

Depressed Teen

Some information I learned several years ago from my Mother is now troubling me. I am 50 years old and have a sister and two brothers. My mother told me a secret concerning a family member and asked me not to share it with anyone. At the time I said I wouldn‘t, but my parents have since died and I find that it now upsets me, and I dwell on it constantly.

My teenage daughter has suddenly lost interest in what seems to be everything. At 11 she was a happy-go-lucky girl. Now she is nearly 13 and for the last three weeks she just sits in her bedroom. She doesn’t even look at her phone anymore, and isn’t eating well. She fell out with her friends recently, but won’t tell me what happened. Usually at this age youngsters go through a period of change and become moody, but this does seem more serious. If she has lost interest in everything, I would say it may have stemmed from falling out with her friends. Do you know the other girls mothers? Could you ask them if they know the details of the fall out? Your daughter sounds depressed, and could even be frightened of something. You should get her along to the doctors as soon as possible, and also have a serious talk with her. The doctor might recommend some counselling sessions, which would encourage her to open up if a talk with you doesn’t reveal anything.

I think you need to share this information with someone. Do you have a close friend, someone who is outside of the family in whom you could confide? The questions of whether you should share the information with the family should be:- a) could anyone be harmed by sharing this information? b) who would be most affected if you shared the information? c) would there be anything to gain by sharing this secret? d) is the reason for holding the secret still a good reason? If you don’t have anyone to talk to, a trained counsellor can help you work through these issues.

Eighty percent of Spain’s egg laying hens live in cages More than 30 million hens in Spain live in overcrowded cages, according to 2019 figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Each bird lives in a space the size of a sheet of paper and never sees the sun. Their beaks are trimmed and they endure constant stress as they lay around 470 eggs in a 100-week period. Spain, along with Portugal, is the European leader of the so-called “furnished-cage” system: 82% of hens are in cages, compared to the average of 52% in the European Union. Indeed, in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden, caged hens make up just over 10% of the total. Since 2016, these four countries have been backing alternative systems such as free-range eggs, where the chicken is allowed to live in larger spaces, and ecological production, where the birds live outside freely and are given organic feed. The consumer can identify the differences according to the number stamped on the egg – zero for organic, one for free-range eggs, two for indoor and three for furnished cages. Spain is also slowly moving toward more animal-friendly systems. Alternative egg production jumped from 7% in 2016 to 17.6% in 2018, according to the Spanish Egg Producer Society (Aseprhu). In other words, around five million hens have escaped furnished cages. María del Mar Fernández Poza, the head of Aseprhu, says the drop is thanks to the big distributors who have decided not to buy eggs from caged

hens. According to the animal-rights group, the Animal Equality Foundation, six of Spain’s seven national supermarket chains – with the exception of Dia – have publicly committed to protecting animal welfare. “If you are restricting the sale of [caged] eggs, you are conditioning the customer to buy what you put in the supermarket,” explains Poza. Ester Muñoz Gil, the head of external relations at Guillén Eggs, one of Spain’s largest farms, says that all egg production is set to be cage-free by 2025. “This trend is also rising due to the pressure animal organizations have placed on food-distribution companies,” says Poza. Since 2017, the Animal Equality Foundation has been protesting outside supermarkets to make customers aware of the terrible conditions of caged hens. Silvia Barquero, the president of the foundation, deplores the fact that Spain is the leader of “animal abuse” in Europe. “The egg industry is resisting this

change because it is economically more profitable to keep hens in cages,” she says. According to the 2012 EU directive on caged hens, each bird must be given a space of at least 750 square centimeters – the size of an A4 piece of paper – as well as nests and perches. But Deborah Temple, a researcher in animal behavior and welfare from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, says this system “falls short.”

The price of animal welfare According to a Eurobarometer survey on animal protection, 75% of Europeans believe animal welfare on farms needs to be improved. However, 90% of those surveyed are not willing to spend more for products that come from farms where animals have better living conditions. There is considerable difference in the market price of eggs. An egg from a caged hen costs around €0.15, while a free-range egg costs €0.25, and ecological eggs €0.50.

Former Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont has been denied entry into Canada for the second time. His lawyer, Stephane Handfield, said an immigration official has denied the separatist leader’s Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), something that European visitors need to enter Canadian territory. The lawyer said he would contest the decision in a federal court. Handfield said the refusal was tied to the “pending accusations” in Spain, where Puigdemont is wanted on allegations of sedition and misuse of public funds in the illegal secession attempt of 2017. Nine other separatist leaders, several of whom served in Puigdemont’s government, were recently found guilty of sedition and sentenced to prison in a Supreme Court decision that triggered week-long protests and rioting in Barcelona and other Catalan cities. Puigdemont fled to Belgium following

a unilateral independence declaration passed by the Catalan parliament in October 2017, and he is now awaiting a decision by the Belgian justice system whether to extradite him to Spain on a European arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities. The court announced last week that it will consider the case on December 16. Quebec Premier Francois Legault said he didn’t understand the federal government’s decision. “I am still perplexed,” Legault said in Quebec City, according to the Canadian daily La Presse. “I would like the Canadian government to explain why it refuses to give this visa.” The separatist leader had been invited to give a talk at a pro-independence association from Quebec, the Société Saint Jean Baptiste. An earlier invitation by this same group in the spring also fell through when Puigdemont’s eTA application was rejected.

Spanish party resorts blocking Brit workers until Brexit is sorted Bars and businesses in Spanish holiday resorts are set to recruit Irish and east European jobhunters to fill key seasonal roles if Brexit prevents British workers jetting to the sun. Traditionally thousands of young Brits have headed to holiday hotspots like Magaluf and Ibiza and fill seasonal jobs but now bosses are turning to alternatives because of Brexit uncertainty. A bar owner in the Majorca party town of Magaluf said he was planning to take on seasonal workers from Ireland to fill seasonal jobs traditionally filled by Brits. The bar owner said: "At the moment we are not too concerned about Summer 2020. "There is never any shortage of people wanting to work for the summer season, but many Brits aren't sure how Brexit will affect their plans. "More people are heading from Ireland and eastern Europe each year to work for the summer, so I don't think we will have any problems filling the jobs." Most experts claim that Brits should not face any new problems obtaining summer work in the EU after Brexit. A man from Birmingham who has worked in Magaluf said an increasing number of other EU nationalities are taking summer

"Employers are quite happy to have people from other countries - they can be cheaper and more hard-working than their British counterparts," he added. The Government has already stated that there will be no radical change to employment law and under agreed Article 50 negotiations, talks on future employment rules will only take place as part of a deal on the future relationship. These begin once the UK has left the EU. But a travel industry Brexit lobby group said roles vital to the holiday business, such as overseas reps, are at risk if the UK leaves the EU without a deal covering overseas workers, according to Travel Weekly. Besides, UK workers employed

Each year in Magaluf alone, thousands of young Brits work in bars, restaurants and other local attractions contributing piles of cash to the local economy and paying sky-high accommodation costs to property owners. Now potential employers are turning their attention away from young Britons to keep the summer seasonal economy afloat at least until Brexit is sorted. Many British entrepreneurs have also invested heavily in businesses abroad, piling their life-savings into the dream of owning a bar in the sun. But most are still waiting to discover if their investment is safe after Brexit.

A “CLEAN HOUSE” SHOWS AS A “HAPPY HOME” WHEN SELLING Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Is your home clean? Does it look its best? What will buyers think? Will they be impressed, or will they wipe their feet on the way out? These are just some of the questions you need to ask yourself, if your property is on the market for sale. Selling a property means people will be walking through your home, and as they’re trying to imagine themselves living there, they could be unnecessarily distracted, if your property isn’t clean. I was called out to visit a property this week that had been on the market for quite some time with another agent, that remained unsold. When I heard about this listing, on paper it seemed like a great deal. So why hadn’t it sold already? As soon as I unlocked the front door, I knew exactly why it hadn’t sold. It was filthy! Now I’m not saying that cleaning is the “be all and end all,” but it definitely has a big impact on potential buyers walking through.

So, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work! Moved a few items of furniture around. Tucked chairs neatly under the table. Hid unnecessary items in cupboards, and started cleaning. Even folding the towels in the bathroom, and putting all of the “buy in bulk” toilet rolls away, made a huge difference. You need to let buyer’s eyes focus on the size of the rooms, instead of cobwebs and grease. The last thing you want is for buyers to feel like they need to wipe their feet, on the way out! If you’re selling your home, you need to realize that you have a lot of competition out there. Buyers will be looking at other properties as well as yours. So before they pay you a visit, make sure your home stands out for all the right reasons. Show buyers that your “clean house” is a “happy home.” You don’t want them running down your street shouting, “I’m a buyer…. Get Me Out Of Here!” To request a complimentary copy of our book, send an email to sales@homes4u.es See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

The miniflat phenomenon in Spain One percent of all properties that are listed for rent on property portal idealista have a surface area of less than 30 m2. Only 0.1 percent of these have less than 20 m2, according to a study published by idealista. Twenty percent of the properties listed have between 30 m2 and 60 m2, while the majority of properties that can be rented in Spain (47.4%) have an area of between 60 m2 and 100 m2. 22.8 percent of the total available has a size ranging from 100 m2 to 150 m2, and 8.7 percent has a larger size. Fernando Encinar, head of studies at idealista states that, "in spite of the loud noise and mass media that comes from it, the phenomenon of the miniapartments is very residual, it is only a small amount in the total of rented properties in our country. The rental market in Spain is generally in good health. One of the few good things that the Autonomous Community

bubble left us is a large stock of quality new properties in urban environments that have a good chance of getting into the rental market. This has led to a large number of substandard properties that have disappeared from the market". Autonomous Communities without mini-flats Navarre is the only autonomous community in which there are no properties of less than 30 m2 on the market. Properties of fewer than 20 m2 are also not rented in Aragón, Asturias, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Murcia, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands or Castilla-La Mancha. The presence of these miniflats is evidential in the rest of the communities, as only 0.1 percent of the properties advertised for rent in Andalusia, Valencia, Castile and Leon, Cantabria and Euskadi is less than that size. In the

Community of Madrid, the figure reaches 0.2 percent. The small impact even in big cities Properties of less than 20 m2 don't represent a significant sample even in large cities. In Barcelona, only 0.1 percent are less than that size, while 0.8 percent have between 20 m2 and 30 m2. 22.8 percent have between 30 and m2 and 60 m2, and the majority (45.3 percent) between 60 m2 and 100 m2. 20.5 percent of properties in Barcelona have between 100 and 150 m2, and only 10.6 percent are larger. The situation is similar in Madrid, only 0.1 percent is less than 20 meters, while 2.4 percent have between 20 m2 and 30 m2. 28 percent have between 30 and m2 and 60 m2 and 35.4 percent between 60 m2 and 100 m2. 19.5 percent of dwellings in Madrid have between 100 and 150 m2, and only 14.5 percent are larger.

He kept talking in circles until he moved away and stopped answering his emails,” says one building resident. In 2004, the couple mediated in the sale of three lofts built on industrial land that once housed a baking factory on Villafranca street. The buyers, who paid half a million euros each, were eventually evicted by city authorities. They say Monasterio and Espinosa de los Heros had promised to use their contacts to get the paperwork in order, but the license applications were never even filed.

How to Lose Weight during Menopause When menstruation ends because to age, or due to the surgical extraction of the reproductive organs, women may face specific health and nutrition problems, many of them related to the loss of the healthy benefits of oestrogens. Menopause is a physiological stage, and normal in a woman’s life; it usually takes place between the ages of 45 and 55, when the ovaries stop producing ova. It may start with irregular menstrual cycles, and appear with other symptoms, such as hot flushes, night sweats, problems sleeping and vaginal dryness. It also affects bone, cardiac and encephalic health, particularly memory. The reduction of circulating oestrogens limits the body’s capacity to remodel bones, causing a reduction of bone mass, and affects the concentration in blood of lipids, increasing “bad” cholesterol (LDL), and reducing “good” cholesterol (HDL). Additionally, during menopause, there is a redistribution of body fat, with more being located in the central area of the body, and this abdominal fat is related to diseases such as diabetes, arterial

hypertension and infarction, and as if that were not enough, losing weight becomes more difficult. All these changes affect our health, which is understood, according to the WHO, as “a complete state of physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not just the absence of disease.” What can women do when we approach this new stage in life? Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes diet, the absence of toxic habits and regular practice of physical activities, will be more important than ever. That said, we can give you some tips.

Health Tips Increase your consumption of pulses. The isoflavones that can be found in these foods are the best-known and most studied phytoestrogens; even though clear conclusions about the effects of isoflavones have not yet been reached, some studies have shown them to have beneficial effects on the levels of cholesterol in plasma, breast cancer and other oestrogen-dependent cancers, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases,

osteoporosis, reduction of hot flushes and recovery of bone mass during menopause. Do not abuse alcohol. The regular ingestion of alcoholic beverages favours the accumulation of fat in the liver, increasing the abdominal perimeter, and it could irreversibly damage the liver cells. If it is, additionally, accompanied by sugary drinks, there is an additional weight-gain effect. Avoid quickly absorbed carbohydrates. These are mainly found in refined flours and cereals, sweets, juices, jams... and they are quickly digested and absorbed. The pancreas releases a dose of the hormone called insulin, proportional to the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream; its mission is to send this glucose to the cells of the body, to supply them with energy, but any leftover glucose will be stored as body fat, so that the more you ingest this type of food, the higher your probability of gaining weight. Reduce your ingestion of fats, and specifically select the most heart

healthy. Maintain a daily and rational consumption of foods such as olive oil, and plan weekly menus that contain more fish and nuts than meats. Increase your consumption of foods that are sources of calcium and vitamin D. The need for this mineral increases in women after menopause. These elements can be found in dairy, sesame, black molasses, nuts and pulses in general, and in lower amounts, in cauliflower, broccoli, spinach and oranges. Pay attention to and readjust your biological clocks. Many of our biological functions follow periodic rhythms; menstruation is just one example. Age, the circumstances of daily life, and the hormonal changes that accompany menopause all alter the function of the central internal clock (in the brain), and the secondary clocks that depend on it (these are in different organs and tissues). Avoid caffeine and other stimulants after sundown; this may help you sleep better. Caffeine is one of the factors due to which we currently sleep

up to two hours less than some fifty years ago. To deal with hot flushes, avoid hot beverages. Combine aerobic physical exercise with strength training. This combination helps you lose excess weight and prevent illnesses associated to excess abdominal fat, and helps reduce the loss of muscle mass that happens with age and with menopause, as well as maintaining the balance between lean mass and fatty mass. Consider hormone substitution therapy, always with medical prescription. With these oestrogen replacement treatments, the administration of calcium and vitamin D supplements may be indicated.

Anniversary donation helps animals

WOODY DOES IT AGAIN Restaurant El Paraiso de Guardamar hosted another very successful charity night recently. 1,360 euros was raised, and has been shared between The Children's Care Home Elche and Stroke Association Spain. Once again, the ever popular, Woody proved to be a big draw, with 143 people attending the

100 breakfasts for homeless at Expo

Pictured is Ann Thomas donating a generous 300 euros to the Albergue animal rescue centre in Torrevieja. She and her husband, Hugh, recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. They held a celebratory party at the Mi Sol bar/restaurant at the Mi Sol Park, Torrevieja run by the lovely Lisa, a lady committed to helping animals. In addition to having a great time Ann and Hugh had the great idea of asking for donations for the Shelter instead of presents. If you care to know more about the shelter and animals or indeed like to help in any way contact alberguecats@gmail.com

The President and Volunteers at Reach Out Extienda La Mano would like to thank all those who were involved with organising the EXPO TORREVIEJA last weekend, and everyone who visited our stand and got information, spoke to our Volunteers and took a chance in our TOMBOLA. The tombola raised 211 Euro which equates to nearly 100 breakfasts, and is greatly appreciated by Reach Out.

event. Sadly another 25 people were disappointed, as tickets sold very quickly. Money donated to the Children's Home will be spent on winter clothing, with a small amount contributing to their Halloween Party.

Stroke Association will be opening a charity shop in Benijofar very soon, and the donation will help with equipping the shop. Both charities are delighted and very grateful for the donations, and wish to thank everybody who attended the event and gave so generously.

SAMM Members Help Schools

Photos show the amplifier system with SAMM members and school staff and SAMM members with some of the children from Al Kazar school

The money raised by SAMM members through their line dance routine at the Caldero Day fiesta in Los Alcazares was always going to be used to help the children affected by the recent, terrible Gota Fria. To benefit as many children as possible it was decided to spread the

spending between four schools. SAMM arranged for books to be sent to Instituto De Educacion Secundaria Antonio Menarguez Costa, painting and drawing materials to be sent to CIEP Bienvenido Conejero Requiel , an amplifier system was delivered to CIEP

Petra Sanchez Rollan and sports equipment to CIEP Al Kazar. These donations cost 800 euros in total. The response from the schools was phenomenal, particularly, Al Kazar, as they had lost all of their sports equipment in the floods.

Strictly's Ballas has breast implants removed over cancer fears Shirley Ballas has had her breast implants removed following a cancer scare. The Strictly Come Dancing judge revealed that she would be having the operation to reduce her risks of developing the disease after discovering a history of cancer in her family. Taking to Instagram, the 59-year-old dancer confirmed that she would be going under the knife, meaning she had to make an early exit from the Pride Of Britain awards last week. Shirley looked sensational in a purple

one-shouldered gown that had a striking paisley pattern in a velvet material. She was joined by her fellow Strictly judges and several contestants at the glittering awards, which recognise and celebrate ordinary people up and down the country doing extraordinary things. Shirley has also vowed to return to the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel for Saturday's live show, leaving her just three days to recover. Shirley revealed last month that she suffered a cancer scare as well as learning

that there was a history of the disease in her family when she shot an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? last year. The two eventualities has led Shirley to consider taking all precautions she can to stop cancer ever affecting her life, including the removal of her implants. After learning that having implants can block signs of breast cancer from being detected, Shirley also revealed she was considering having the scar tissue around her implants removed as well, to be extra careful.

When she first explained her potential plans, she said: 'I've had a breast augmentation. It makes me step back and think when you go for these mammograms: "Can you see at the back? Is it clear what you can see?" 'It's making me sit back and think: "Shall I remove them? Would it be a good safety precaution for me?"' Shirley's niece Mary - who is a nurse and the daughter of Shirley's late brother David, who took his life in 2003 aged 44 has also weighed in on the matter, telling

her aunt that anything put into one's body that is not 'built from your own body' is a potential risk to health.

However, Coronation Street serial killer Richard Hill returned to the cobbles for one last time to give Corrie fans a spook for a one-off night of horror for Halloween.

The Brassic star, 32, took to Twitter to reach out to her 3.6 million followers for help as she felt 'helpless' in protecting her pet pooch from the loud noises. Michelle tweeted: 'Anyone else’s dog terrified of fireworks??? Feel so helpless... any advice??' followed by a kiss emoji.

And amid his return to the limelight, actor Brian Capron, 72, revealed that he still gets branded a 'murderer' everywhere he goes, 16 years after leaving the ITV soap.

While the majority of the former Coronation Street star's followers were quick to offer their advice one fan decided to leave a sarcastic response. They put: '90% of dogs are, what a silly question to ask Mich.'

During his two-tear stint on the street, evil Richard left his business partner Duggie Ferguson to die, before brutally killing his ex-wife Patricia with a shovel. Not content with two deaths on his conscience, Richard then attempted to kill other Weatherfield residents including Norris Cole, Audrey Roberts and Emily Bishop. Coppola Hills Coppola Hills restaurant is a family-run business and is making a statement in the Benimar and Rojales area with their home-made Italian cuisine. They have been open since April. The Coppola chain has received eight awards to date, three in Guardamar, three in Benimar and two in Ireland for the Best Italian Restaurant. Titles which they can add to their long list of success stories all the way down from Italy to Ireland then onto Spain. Coppola Hills is run by father and son, Tony and Cristian. Both have a vast extensive knowledge due to running a number of culinary businesses since 1995. It is plain to see why the Number 1 Italian Restaurant business on trip advisor over the last two years has received much acclaim. The recipes for the traditional Naples style cuisine that were passed down by Grandma Antoinette Coppola to her daughter-in-law Catherine Coppola and then to her sons and daughter over the years have been combined with the expertise of Sicilian chefs to bring together incredible flavours from Sicily to Napoli. Customers have referred to Coppola cuisine as “impeccable”, the service “first class” and the portions “generous”.

Orihuela emergency spending The ordinary plenary session of the City Council of Orihuela has approved a credit supplement of 4,486,000 euros to cover the expenses necessary to cover the emergency expenses in the municipality for the cold drop that hit the city in September. Of this money, 3.3 million was spent during the first five days of the DANA mainly in the rental of machinery and vehicles to remove reeds, bring food and clothing to those affected, to be used by the Local Police and for the removal of household goods and rubbish. The priority was to rescue the people who had been isolated in their homes, for which trucks and machinery were needed, and to work quickly to clean the reeds from the river and reinforce slopes to avoid overflow, which eventually occurred in several points. "These were times when you had to act and you could not wait for paperwork, it was an emergency situation," said Treasury head, Rafael Almagro who defended the spend at the

recent Plenary meeting. In addition to the rental of machinery the landfill has charged the City almost half a million euros to deposit the debris and the local council had to hire an external service provider to remove the rubble and debris

from where they were deposited by the flood waters. The repair of sanitation and drinking water networks were another of the biggest expenses, as well as fixing the electrical lighting panels that were damaged, at a cost of 2,500 euros each.

Request for aid Both the Ministry of Interior and the Generalitat will consider covering the payment of the expenses derived from an emergency such as that suffered by Orihuela, so the City Council will send most of the invoices that were generated to try to receive compensation payments, as well as collect the decrees approved by the state and regional administrations. However, the city Treasurer said at the meeting: “I do not have much hope of receiving such aid." In response to the emergency spending Carlos Bernabé de Cambiemos said that "the emergency procedure cannot be a disaster drawer or a blank check", demanding more transparency from the government team. The City Council will now have to bear the expenses of the emergency for the dozens of roads, highways, parks, vehicles and much more damaged by the September floods.

Tony, Catherine and their children, Roberto, Cristian and Deborah have brought Italy to the Costa Blanca. Their children are now distinguished chefs too thanks to their Mother, who will make sure that the Coppola style continues to reincarnate itself through the years. The menu offers a wide selection of home-made pizzas delicately forged in a stone oven and tagliatelle with lobster. There is a variety of meat and fish on offer that is cooked to perfection on the grill. The menu de la noche is a three-course meal that Tony highly recommends on the first visit to get an idea of the vibrant mix of flavours available. The restaurant is located at the top of the tranquil hill which is the perfect setting to enjoy some Italian delicacies. Higher up than the bustling restaurant

chains, the view from the top of the hill is quite enchanting. Inside the restaurant there is a cosy two-storey open plan set-up whilst recreating an authentic Italian atmosphere. Outside there is a wonderful chill-out area to enjoy a cocktail or two. The Coppola family have grand plans for the future. Find Coppola Hills on Facebook and Instagram with the handle @coppolahills to read more glimmering reviews or call them on 865524458 to book. They can be found at Calle Agata 2, Benimar II, Rojales

Parker 100 List Spanish wines: Topbudget tipples Spanish wine is cheap; that's universally acknowledged, as any expat from the UK who's just been on a return trip will bear witness. Low prices do not always indicate poor quality, either – even if you set your top budget at €2.50, you can find some very decent wines in the supermarket that will leave you with some change, and the house wine at most restaurants, from your family-run, scruffybut-cosy bars to your three-Michelin-starred eateries, is nearly always very drinkable. That's largely because Spain produces so much of its own wine that it does not have to import any – and, in fact, rarely does – unlike the UK where, apart from a few experimental vineyards in Suffolk and Kent that are more of a tourist attraction than a real mass production enterprise, pretty much all wine is bought in from

elsewhere. But if the thought of paying a couple of euros for a bottle is still a bit embarrassing and you want to push the boat out to impress your mates, there's plenty of potential for it among Spanish wines. Got a spare €1,650 you're just itching to part with? Well, the top-priced wine from Spain on the Parker List comes in at about what you'd pay for a week's full-board package trip to India departing from Madrid airport, all excursions included. worth it – even if only footballers and rock stars can afford them.

The Parker List – 41 years of tasting the best wines It's great work if you can get it, and Robert Parker has it. Based in Baltimore, USA, he's one of the world's most acclaimed winetasters and critics, and anything that meets with his approval automatically acquires a price

tag of three or four figures in dollars, euros or pound sterling. His bi-monthly magazine, The Wine Advocate, which he founded in 1978, classifies wines on a scale of 50 to 100 points based upon its appearance, colour, aroma and 'bouquet', flavour, finish and potential or actual global acclaim. As one man can only drink so much wine, Parker now has a team spread across five continents, some spanning more than one – and Luis Gutiérrez is the lucky chap who gets to try out 4,000 samples of wine every year from Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Spain. Very few win medals in the 'Wine Olympics', as the Parker List is known, but as Spain is such a huge producer, it was bound to see a few of its elixirs creep in. Here are some of the top-scoring ones approved by the world's most trusted oenologists. Epilepsy patients at risk over meds shortage People suffering from epilepsy in Spain have expressed serious concerns about the recent chronic lack of medications being currently suffered by the Spanish pharmaceutical sector. Spanish medicine agency AEMPS has added a vital epilepsy medication, Mysoline 250mg, to the long list of medicines currently suffering supply problems. Mysoline is managed by Serb Laboratories and although not very widespread in its use, it has no generic alternative available. It now joins four other antiepileptic drugs, missing from Spanish pharmacies over the last three months – a situation which is causing increased anxiety in Spanish epilepsy patients. Spanish officials received an alert from the laboratory in early

September about potential supply problems and, because it is unlikely the issue will be resolved before the end of the year, has been forced to authorise that Mysoline can be imported from abroad to allow patients currently using

the drug to continue with their treatment. Access to this unusual form of getting the medication, however, is not easy or quick and reports indicate that there are scores of patients, overcome

with anxiety about the situation, who are reaching out to their neurologists to try to get hold of the drug as soon as possible. The Ministry of Health is referring patients to the Neurology departments of hospitals as it is through the hospital pharmacies that the imported medicine is being supplied. The health ministry wants to avoid, at least in part, any additional stress for people with epilepsy. Vicente Villanueva, head of Valencia Hospital’s epilepsy unit, explained, “They are referring patients to hospitals. Here we do not need to ask abroad and, if so, it is easier to do it centrally.” Mysoline is now the fifth antiepileptic drug missing from Spanish pharmacies over the last three months.

How Much Coffee Is Too Much? How many afternoons have you sluggishly moseyed over to the office coffee machine or your kettle and wondered, is this really my fourth cup of the day? Or wait, is it my fifth? We've all been there, but a new study shows refilling your cup too often could be hurting your health. The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests that drinking six or more cups of coffee per day may increase your risk of heart disease by up to 22 percent. Researchers from the University of South Australia analysed the health records and self-reported dietary patterns of 347,077 participants between the ages of 37 and 73. They also looked to see which study participants possessed a specific gene variant, called CYP1A2, that enables people to metabolise caffeine faster than those without the variant. Overall, the researchers found that people who said drank six or more cups of coffee a day were 22% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease during the study period, compared to those who drank one to two cups daily. They also

concluded that this association was independent of genetic makeup; in other words, people with the caffeine-metabolising gene were not able to safely drink more than those who don't have it. The study authors believe that coffee (in large quantities) and heart problems may be linked because excess caffeine consumption can cause high blood pressure, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. According to the World Health Organisation, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, yet it's also one of the most preventable. Most people would agree that if you drink a lot of coffee, you might feel jittery, irritable or perhaps even nauseous. That's because caffeine helps your body work faster and

harder, but it is also likely to suggest that you may have reached your limit for the time being. That doesn’t mean that any and all coffee is bad for your heart, however. In fact, the researchers also found that participants who didn’t drink coffee at all—and those who drank decaf—also had higher rates of heart disease (11 percent and 7 percent higher, respectively) than those who drank one to two cups per day. Previous research has found coffee is rich in antioxidants and may reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. That is, if it’s consumed in moderation. A 2017 review published in Food and Chemical Toxicology found that intake levels of up to 400 mg a day, or about four 8-ounce cups of coffee, are not associated with health risks for adults. So no, there’s no reason to completely cut out coffee, but it is smart to pay attention to how much you’re really drinking. Knowing the limits of what's good for you and what's not is key; as with many things, it's all about moderation; overindulge and your health will pay for it.

American cheese wins People buying World cheese award more sugar, not less For the first time ever, an American cheese has taken the top prize at the World Cheese Awards. The winners of the 32nd annual competition, which are known as The Oscars of the cheese world, were recently announced in Bergamo, Italy. More than 3,800 cheeses from 42 countries on six continents were entered, and after three rounds of judging, the Rogue River Blue from Rogue Creamery in Central Point, Oregon was named the World Champion cheese. The Rogue River Blue narrowly edged the 24month aged Nazionale del Parmigiano Reggiano Latteria Sociale Santo Stefano, produced by an Italian cheesemaker. The third-place entry was Spain's Torta del Casar DOP Virgen del Prado, a raw sheep's milk cheese. "This year’s top prize was almost too close to call and I would like to congratulate both Rogue Creamery and Nazionale del Parmigiano Reggiano Latteria Sociale Santo Stefano for going the distance and providing us with one of the most dramatic finales in World Cheese history," John Farrand,

managing director of the Guild of Fine Food, which organises the World Cheese Awards, said in a statement. "Rogue Creamery has been at the forefront of the US artisan cheese revolution for some years, so it seems very fitting for them to be the first American winners of

our World Champion Cheese trophy." American cheeses performed well this year, as seven U.S. cheeses were included in the competition's list of the World's 84 Best Cheeses. But not everyone is

celebrating America's new dairy dominance; according to Sky News, France isn't taking the results well. One widely read newspaper in the country called it "sacrilege" that only one French cheese placed in the top 16 – and that cheese tied for eighth. "We try to celebrate cheeses from around the world, especially those made by smaller artisan cheesemakers. Good cheese is made around the world, not just by the French," Farrand told the network. "I know lots of French people who work in cheese who know that fine cheeses are made in many different countries." The winning Rogue River Blue is hand-wrapped in Syrah grape leaves that have been soaked in pear liqueur. It's then cave-aged for nine to 11 months. (One Brazilian judge describes it as a "taste party," although Rogue's website modestly describes it as having flavours of "fruit, spice, blackberry, vanilla, hazelnut, chocolate and bacon.") If you're interested in trying the World's Best Cheese, it helps to be in Oregon, but it can be ordered online as either a quarter wheel ($75) or a full wheel ($235).

Progress in reducing food sugar content is being “lost” due to people consuming more sugary items, Public Health England‘s chief executive has warned. Duncan Selbie faced questions from the Health and Social Care Committee about the progress of the government’s childhood obesity plan which was published in 2016. Despite the plan setting a voluntary target for the food industry to reduce 20 percent of sugar from key food categories by the end of 2020, Mr Selbie said the figure currently stood at a “disappointing” 2.9 percent. Despite some products now having less sugar in them, more were being sold due to promotional offers and advertising, he added. “The British people are buying on promotion almost 20 percent more food each week than they otherwise would if we didn’t have these promotions,” Mr Selbie said. ”If we don’t tackle the way in which we are selling food, and promoting and selling more food to people, however much sugar

we take out of the food, we won’t see the difference we need to see. “On advertising, it is a hundredfold difference between what the industry spends on advertising unhealthy food, than I’ve got available to counter it with public information.” Dr Alison Tedstone, Public Health England’s chief nutritionist, said 110 retailer own brands and manufacturer brands decreased

their sugar content by more than 2 percent. However, she said 62 had increased the sugar in their products, while 154 made no change. She said: “In chapter two of the childhood obesity plan, it said the government will consider restrictions on advertising and

restrictions on promotions of food. When you look at our data, you can see part of the problem is more of things being sold that are high sugar. “And therefore things that potentially affect the volume of sales are the most important.” England’s former chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies said she would support calls to ban the broadcasting of adverts for foods with high fat and sugar content. She told the committee: “Some (companies) are reducing (sugar content) but through marketing, more is being bought. Unless the industry knows we are going to take action at the fiscal level, they are not going to move.” Mr Selbie said the government’s position on future fiscal measures on the sugar reduction programme was that Public Health England would give its “final advice” in 2021. “It is a reasonable signal that if we are at 2.9 per cent at year two and we were hoping to be closer to 10 per cent at that time, we need to see further fast progress,” he said. ”It is a big wake-up message to industry.”

Gum health basics Everybody wants to have gleaming teeth, of course. But a healthy smile actually begins with your gums. They are like the foundation of a house: If you have any damage at the base, it starts to impact the entire structure. Sore, puffy gums can ultimately lead to tooth decay and bone loss—and possibly problems beyond your mouth, too. Studies have tied poor oral and gum health to conditions that involve the immune system, lungs, heart, and brain. Most gum troubles can be blamed on plaque, a sticky film that coats our teeth and contains millions of bacteria. If plaque isn’t removed daily, it begins to harden into a crusty layer called tartar. The bacteria in the tartar produce acids that erode tooth enamel and also irritate your gums, causing tenderness and inflammation known as gingivitis. Accordig to the Dental Association gingivitis is usually reversible by getting better about brushing and flossing, and seeing your dentist, who can remove the tartar. But if it’s left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis—a more serious infection in which “pockets” form along the gum-line and fill with bacterial toxins that break down the bones and tissue that hold teeth in place. Eventually, teeth can become so loose they fall out, or need to be removed. Gingivitis is usually reversible by getting better about brushing and flossing, and seeing your dentist, who can remove the tartar. As if that weren’t bad enough, doctors

suspect that inflammation in the gums may trigger inflammation throughout the body. That may explain why studies have shown an association between gum disease and a variety of health issues, including heart disease and stroke, Alzheimer’s, lung cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers have even found that pregnant women with gum problems may be more likely to have a premature or underweight baby. Luckily, keeping your gums happy isn’t hard. Ninety-nine percent of gum issues can be prevented with a few good habits. And if you’re already suffering from gum inflammation there are ways to stem the damage and possibly undo it. Signs of Trouble Have you noticed a little blood when you brush or floss? It may just be that you’re brushing too hard, but bleeding can also indicate a build-up of plaque. For the next week, brush more gently; if you’re still seeing blood seven days later, make an appointment with your dentist, who can remove any tartar with a professional cleaning. The colour of your gums can be another signal that something’s wrong. Healthy gums range from medium pink to light brown, depending on your skin tone. Dark red gums are a sign of periodontitis, so if you notice the shade is off, call your dentist.

Keep an eye out for gum recession, too. Look for tissue that’s pulling back, exposing the roots of a tooth, or several teeth. Recession can be brought on by genetics (thanks, Mom and Dad), vigorous brushing, or grinding your teeth at night. But in the vast majority of recession cases, plaque and tartar are the culprits. Unlike early stages of gum disease, gum recession is not reversible. Chances are you may develop a sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, since the exposed root of a tooth isn’t protected by a coating

of enamel like the rest of the tooth. Ask your dentist about trying a desensitising toothpaste; these formulas are made with compounds that stop up the tiny canals in the outer layer of the root, to shield the nerves inside. For a severe case of recession, you may need a gingival graft. In this simple procedure, a periodontist

takes tissue from the palate and uses it to repair the receding area of gum-line. The Hormone Factor It’s unfair but true: You can be a stickler for oral health and still develop gum issues. That’s because totally normal hormonal changes in your body can wreak havoc in your mouth. When a woman is pregnant, for example, rising progesterone can make her more susceptible to the growth of gingivitis causing bacteria. (You might even notice bright red, puffy gums when your progesterone spikes a day or two before your period—a phenomenon known as menstruation gingivitis.) Gum woes are common during perimenopause, too: Fluctuations in estrogen levels can create dryness in the mouth, and with less saliva present, microbes can thrive. During these times, it’s extra important to stay on top of your oral hygiene. And check in with your dentist about possibly coming in for care more frequently. Tweak Your Habits You learned the basics of oral care when you were a kid—but a few details can make a big difference. Dentists recommend using a brush with soft bristles. Soft bristles are not only easier on your gums but they are also more flexible and can reach underneath the gum-line to sweep away bits of food and plaque. A review of research found that

powered brushes removed 21 percent more plaque than the manual kind after three months of use. As for proper brushing, think of it more like gentle polishing: Make circular motions with your toothbrush on the surface of your teeth—and brush for at least two minutes. Most people only last 30 seconds, if that’s you, an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer may help. Another common mistake people make is not flossing before they brush. A few years ago, the Associated Press reported there was little scientific evidence that flossing was worthwhile— which led to a media frenzy and much confusion. But experts point out that the studies to date are too short in duration to show the long-term preventive benefits of the habit. They stand by flossing for the simple reason that it removes food and plaque in spots your toothbrush can’t reach. If you’re not a fan of string, floss picks (which look kind of like a mini archer’s bow with a handle) can get the job done. And soft picks— those wiry, cylindrical little tools—are great if you have wider spaces between your teeth, or dental work. Finally, don’t skip the recommended six-monthly visits to your dentist. Aside from giving your teeth a thorough cleaning, your doc can detect problems early on, before they get worse. Some patients don’t experience any obvious signs of gum disease, but a professional can spot trouble and nip it in the bud.

Potential Benefits of Fish Oil If you had to guess the most-used natural product in Europe and the US, you might say melatonin, or maybe probiotics. It turns out, though, the answer is fish oil, with nearly 8 percent of adults taking it. Whether you're among them, or you're thinking about buying a supplement, you may be curious about the exact benefits of fish oil and whether there any downsides to popping a pill. Fish oil may fight chronic inflammation Oils extracted from fatty fish like sardines, anchovies, and mackerel provide two types of omega-3 fatty acids—eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—that are known to help lower inflammation, and generally improve inflammatory conditions in the body. Because chronic, low-grade inflammation is associated with premature aging and a number of diseases, fish-derived omega-3s may offer a broad spectrum of health protection. It's thought to be heart protective

Fish oil has been shown to help increase “good” HDL cholesterol, lower triglycerides (or blood fats), reduce blood pressure, prevent plaques from forming in arteries, and stave off hardening of the arteries. Fish oil might help boost bone density It's common for most people to consume far more omega-6 fatty acids— which are found in plant oils, like corn and sunflower oils—than omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA. That imbalance has been implicated as a culprit of low bone density in both men and women. However, older adults with higher omega-3 intakes have been shown to maintain greater bone density, making fish oil a potential mediator of age-related bone loss. It may even keep your brain sharp In one study, fish oil improved cognitive performance in healthy adults between the ages of 51 and 72 in just five weeks. Research has also connected

higher blood levels of omega-3s with a lower risk of depression and anxiety. And help you stay physically fit Some research has linked omega-3s to fat loss. And supplemental fish oil can slow the normal decline in muscle mass and function in men and women between 60 and 85. The good fats if fish oil also help to stimulate muscle protein growth, and improve muscle mass, even in sedentary older adults, and bolster resistance training-induced increases in muscle strength. But don't go overboard on fish oil But you can get too much of a good thing. Fish oil has a blood thinning effect, so too much can increase bleeding risk, especially if it's combined with other blood thinners, like aspirin, or supplemental vitamin E, garlic, ginger, ginseng, ginkgo, and turmeric. You may not even need a supplement if you eat fatty fish (like salmon, mackerel, or sardines) a few times a week.

Oblique exercises for a toned core Let’s face it, to get a core as sculpted as Jillian Michaels or J.Lo, it’s going to take more than crunches and sit-ups—which only strengthen the ‘washboard’ muscles. You’re also going to have to strengthen your internal and external obliques. The oblique muscles are actually the largest of all your ab muscles and are the muscles responsible for those chiselled V lines. Strong internal and external obliques are also essential for injury prevention, especially as you get older. They protect your lower back, create stability around your midsection (which helps prevent falls), and allow you to move safely in multiple directions. Try these oblique exercises below... Standing side crunch Not only does this movement target the external obliques, but it also works on hip stability. And because you have to squeeze your bum to keep your lower body still while performing a rep, you’re also strengthening your glutes. How to do it: Stand with your feet hip-width apart and knees slightly bent. Lace your fingers behind your head so that your elbows are pointing to the sides. When you’re ready to begin, draw your belly button in toward your spine and make sure your ribs aren’t flaring out. Move your right elbow toward your right hip for a count of four, pause, then lift back up to starting position for a count of four. That’s one rep. Repeat 10 times before switching to the left side. Slow bicycle crunch

Bicycle crunch, but make it slo-mo. That’s the gist with this twist on a classic oblique ab exercise. The goal with this movement is form, not speed. How to do it: Begin by lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet planted on the ground. Minimize the space between your back and the mat by drawing your belly button toward your spine. Lace your fingers under your head,

elbows pointed out. Lift your head, shoulders, and upper back off the mat. Take four counts to rotate your left elbow to your right knee. Return to the mat on a count of two. That’s one rep. Switch sides, and continue alternating as if you’re very slowly

pedalling a bicycle. Aim for 20 total reps. Standard side plank This exercise really activates the internal obliques, and you will also work the rest of your core. While you’re performing it, don’t let your chest turn toward the ground. Stay open to whichever direction you're facing to reap the true benefits. How to do it: Start lying down on your side with one forearm flat on the ground directly under your shoulder and your feet stacked on top of each other. Engage your core to lift your hips off the ground until your body is in a straight line from head to toe. Keep the non-supporting arm up with your hand above or behind your head. Try to hold that straight body position for 30 seconds. Repeat on the opposite side. Spiderman push-up You already know that push-ups are seriously effective for strengthening your triceps, chest, core, and shoulders. Well, this variation lets you target your obliques at the same time. If you can’t comfortably complete five standard push-ups in a row, try this with your knees on the floor. How to do it: Start in push-up position with your hands directly under your shoulders. Bend your elbows as if you’re doing a push-up. As you lower your body toward the floor, lift your right leg off the floor, open up that right hip, and draw your right knee up to touch the outside of your right elbow. Return to push-up position. That’s one rep. Repeat on the left side. Aim to complete three sets of 10 reps.

Facebook emphasises women's safety on social media Facebook says it's working to make its social media platforms a safer and more welcoming community for women by partnering with domestic violence organizations. Facebook wants to reduce harassment that might be keeping women offline, it said in a blog post recenly, and is "developing cutting-edge technology to help prevent abuse from happening in the first place." "In the background, we have tools like AI and machine learning to prevent harassment," Antigone Davis, Facebook's global head of safety, says in a video accompanying the blog post. "We also are giving user controls -- that means things like blocking, being able to hide and delete comments you don't want

underneath your posts, it means being able to report to us." The social media giant says it's using digital fingerprinting and photo-matching technology when a non-consensual intimate image is shared, to prevent it

from being posted again after it's reported. "But we wanted to do even more," Facebook added. "We developed machine-learning and artificial-intelligence techniques to proactively detect

nude or near-nude images and videos shared without permission -- without anyone having to report them." According to Facebook, when it expanded its hate speech policy in July, it spoke with women's rights organisations, safety organisations and even anthropological and cognitive linguists to ensure the policy covered harassment of women across different cultural standards. For instance, showing a nude photo could be used to shame a woman in the US, while showing a photo of an ankle or a woman walking with a man who's not a family member could shame them in other nations. Facebook is able to take down photos in all of these situations.

Manage your Google data Google collects a ton of information about you -- maybe even more than you realize. Google remembers every search you perform and every YouTube video you watch. Whether you have an iPhone or Android phone, Google Maps logs everywhere you go, the route you take to get there, when you arrive and what time you leave -- even if you never open the app. When you really take a look at everything Google knows about you, the results are staggering -- maybe even a little frightening. Thankfully, there's now something you can do about it. As a spate of data leaks and privacy violations continues to weaken the public's trust in big tech companies, Google has responded by creating a privacy hub that lets you access, delete and limit the data Google collects on you. Navigating all the various settings can get confusing, however, and it's not always clear what you're giving Google permission to do. What's worse, whenever you make a change that would restrict how much or for how long Google tracks you, Google warns that its services won't work as well without unfettered access to your

data. How true that may be isn't very clear. Despite Google's best efforts to increase transparency, recent revelations that the search giant was secretly sharing users' private data with third-party advertisers have challenged the public's trust in the company, whose Google Home and Google Nest lines of smart speakers seek to put microphones and cameras in the most private of settings -- your home. We're going to cut through all the clutter and show you how to access the private data Google has on you, as well as how to delete some or all of it. Then we're going to help you find the right balance between your privacy and the Google services you rely on by choosing settings that limit Google's access to your information without impairing your experience. Find out what private information Google considers 'public' Chances are, Google has your name, a photo of your face, your birthday, gender, other email addresses you use, your password and phone number. Some of this is listed as public information (not your password, of course). Here's

how to see what Google shares with the world about you. 1. Open a browser window and navigate to your your Google Account page. 2. Type your Google username (with or without "@gmail.com"). 3. From the menu bar, choose Personal info and review the information. You can change or delete your photo, name, birthday, gender, password, other emails and phone number. 4. If you'd like to see what information of yours is available publicly, scroll to the bottom and select Go to About me. 5. You can then back out and make changes. There's currently no way to make your account private. Be forewarned, just because you set Google not to track your online or offline activity doesn't necessarily mean you've closed off your data to Google completely. Google has admitted it can track your physical location even if you turn off location services using information gathered from Wi-Fi and other wireless signals near your phone. Also, just like Facebook has been guilty of doing for years, Google doesn't even need you to be signed in to track you.

What coloured number N332 onthe Road plates mean You may already be aware that taxis now display blue number plates on the back of their vehicles. It is not only marked and branded taxis that display them, but also VTC vehicles(Vehículos de Turismo con Conductor), which are effectively private hire or chauffer driven cars, a taxi by another name but more restrictive as to

how it can operate. The objective of the blue number plate was to clearly identify legally licenced taxis and VTC vehicles, and, more importantly, highlight “pirate” taxis operating in certain areas. The clear definition of a taxi of VTC is to provide transport services in exchange for money, goods or services. Anyone doing this in a private vehicle is therefore, by definition, a taxi, and operating illegally, without insurance, in the event of carrying passengers without the correct registration. Companies such as Uber andCabifyare operating in certain areas of Spain, these

vehicles will also adopt the blue number plate, as they are classed under the same rules as VTC vehicles. The move also brought Spain in line with other countries in Europe, some of which already have a similar distinction in place. The ruling came into force in July of 2018, with a transition period of one year given to allow owners to acquire the new plates. Therefore, as of the end of July of this year, it is now mandatory for these vehicles to display blue number plates. The regulation now obliges all vehicles with a taxi or VTC licence, with up to 9 seats, to display a blur number plate on the rear only. On the front, the ordinary, black letters on a white background is required. As with all number plates, no alterations or modifications are permitted. In order to obtain one of these plates, the vehicle owner must provide proof of the legal status of the vehicle, so it also serves as a security for users that they are in a compliant and legal vehicle. Some other colours Whilst on the subject of coloured number plates, you may have noticed a few more colours driving around. If you see a red or green number plate, this is a temporary registration whilst the permanent process is being carried out, such as would be the case if you were to transfer a British registered vehicle to

Spain. There are also red and green number plates used by the Diplomatic and Consular bodies respectively and accompanied by the acronym CD and CC in each case. There are also acronyms used to identify many types of vehicles, especially those of the State Security Forces and Bodies: CNP for the National Police, PGC for the Civil Guard, CME for the Mossosd'Esquadra or ET for the Army, among others. For the rest of us, we too must follow strict rules when it comes to displaying our vehicle registration. In Spain, it is articles 25 and 49 of the General Vehicle Regulations that specify the format and content that the number plate of any vehicle must have. It is not enough to be black letters on a white background, but it must be reflective. Only certain flexibility in the dimensions is allowed, considering three different sizes according to the characteristics of the vehicle. Since 2000 it is also mandatory to include the blue strip of the European Union with the initial one of the country of registration.

Members of the N332 team have been busy travelling around the area since the summer, visiting local groups and businesses to explain about the new changes to traffic law. For the first time since the project began in 2015, the team ventured further south, thanks to a talk arranged by Ibex Insurance at Camposol, near Mazarrón. Ibex also arranged a similar talk in Quesada. What made these events different was that they were open to any individuals, rather than the usual groups we attend, and both were seemingly very popular. With “Brexit” questions being the inevitable hot topic, the team were also joined on the talks by Keith Littlewood, a financial advisor with Blacktower Financial Management, who was on hand to answer doubts about financial security. The team also visited the Chatters group at Los Alcazarés, the Royal British Legion (Orihuela Costa and District Branch) and are set to meet with ARPO (the Association of Retired Police Officers) in November. In the midst of all of that, volunteers from the project were also on hand at Expo Torrevieja, answering questions on a face-to-face basis, and handing out all

the necessary help, advice and documents you could possibly need. Although we still have one or two event pending confirmation dates, as we get closer to the winter period, we will commence our visits to some of the private schools in the area, passing on invaluable advice to the younger generation about road safety. If you are a member of a parent / teacher association and would like us to visit your school, or if you are a representative of group of 50 or more people, then feel free to email us and we will try to make arrangements to schedule a visit with you. Our talks to the younger groups are split into different age categories and include such topics as crash helmet use, with samples provided to us by Shiro, one of the most famous manufacturers in the world, as well as the importance of seat belts and being seen, amongst other topics. For the adults, the current talk aims to advise about the changes in the law over the last year, and what to expect as we go into 2020. If you are a representative and would like to discuss us visiting your association or school, you can send an email to news@n332.es

Road Safety Plan mapped out Despite the upcoming elections, which may well change the political and personnel overview of those involved, the current caretaker government is forging ahead with the next phase of their road safety plan, heading full speed on the route to the “Road to Zero”. For his first time, the acting Interior Minister. Fernando Grande-Marlaska. chaired the Plenary Session of the Higher Council for Traffic, Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility, which was held at the headquarters of the General Traffic Directorate (DGT) in Madrid. The Plenum of the Council is the consultation body that aims to boost and improve traffic, road safety and sustainable mobility, as well as promote the agreement between the different public administrations and entities that develop activities in these areas. The chairman was accompanied by the undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Isabel Goicoechea, the Director General of Traffic, Pere Navarro, and authorities of other ministries and public and private agencies linked to road safety. In his opening address, GrandeMarlaska stressed that the council “is an essential tool for consensus and promotion of public policies, such as road safety, in which the involvement of all social agents from their different fields of competence is essential to continue moving forward”. Grande-Marlaskaalso pointed out the crucialness of the timing of this meeting, as it is a crucial moment for Road Safety and Mobility, since 2020 sees the first decade in which the World HealthOrganisation´s Action for Road Safety ends, at which time achievements will be reviewed and lessons learned, as the ten years of information and data will be studied. In addition, he added that the strategic direction of future actions will be established by 2030, where road safety will have an important role as it is included as one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, with which Spain has aligned compliance. Vulnerable groups The minister has commissioned the General Directorate of Traffic to elaborate the Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030, within the Superior Council of Traffic, Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility, a strategy that was born with the objective of reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries for all countries of the European Union by 50%. "This future strategy will be one of the main means to achieve it," Grande-Marlaska said. Grande-Marlaska recalled that in 2018, 1,806 people died in a traffic incident and another 8,935 were injured. "The figures are still unacceptably high, but 24 fewer people died and the number of injuries were 611 less than the previous year, a decline that can point to a change in trend." The acting minister has added that the Department of Interior “is especially concerned about vulnerable road users, namely pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, since they account for 48% of the total number of deaths and the trend continues to increase; therefore, it is up to the Ministry of Interior to protect the weakest and the greatest efforts must

be concentrated on them”. Compliance with the 2011-2020 road safety strategy Regarding the indicators included in the Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020, the consolidated data for 2018 reveals: The most relevant indicator, death rate per million inhabitants, reached a value of 39 in 2018, compared to the objective of the strategy of 37 in 2020. It is necessary to maintain a high intensity of road safety policies to ensure compliance with this objective. Five of the indicators were already achieved. They are those referred to serious injuries, deceased children without Child Restraint Systems (SRI), 1824-year-old drivers killed and seriously injured at the weekend, those killed in conventional road exits, and the rate of cyclists killed per million population. The remaining six (older driver deaths, pedestrians killed, deceased occupants of cars on urban roads, motorcyclist killed and seriously injured, work related deaths, and positive controls for alcohol) require additional efforts for compliance. Developed activities Throughout the meeting, the report of relevant activities during the years 2018 and 2019 has been presented, among which the implementation of the DGT 3.0 Platform stands out; the reduction of the speed limit on conventional roads to 90 kilometres per hour;and forums bringing together towns, cities and even countries to align goals. Likewise, the plan of special measures for the road safety of motorcycles and mopeds 2019-2020 and the State Bicycle Strategy have been announced. The Plan of special measures for the road safety of motorcycles and mopeds 2019-2020 starts from a comprehensive approach and is structured in 6 areas, 11 programs and 17 measures. Among the measures, the implementation of compulsory theoretical training, the regulation of safe driving courses, the mandatory use of gloves on interurban roads and the promotion of the biker airbag are highlighted. The State Strategy for the bicycle has also been presented, which is a commission received from the same Plenary in 2017 and led by DGT. The objective of this strategy is to encourage the use of the bicycle in all its modalities, for which 27 instruments and more than 100 actions have been raised. In the elaboration of the strategy, there have been the participation of different public

administrations and the most representative sectors of the bicycle. Legislative Modifications In the course of the Plenary, the regulatory projects in which the General Directorate of Traffic has worked and the situation in which they are located have been described. Draft Law on the modification of the licence for points with the aim of updating a model considered a success by most experts. The main novelties affect some infractions such as the mobile phone and the courses of sensitisation and road re-education, which are the main channel to adapt the behaviours of the drivers. Modification of the General Regulations of Drivers, where it has been proposed to include the obligation to receive 8 hours of mandatory face-to-face training of theoretical classes of awareness and sensitisation in road safety, focusing on safe values, principles, attitudes and behaviours at the wheel, since attitudes develop during driving. Ministerial order of safe motorcycle driving courses, in which the content, requirements and minimum duration of these courses will be regulated and whose realisation will entail the bonus of points in the driving licence. The objective is to train those holders of a valid and in force motorcycle driving licence in the different techniques aimed at preventing accidents, adopting good practices in driving and equipment. Royal Decree of urban traffic measures, which includes the reduction of speed in cities to 30 kilometre per hour on onelane roads in the sense with the idea of protecting the vulnerable, and the regulation of personal mobility vehicles, where they are granted legal entity and general lines are defined as the speed at which they can travel, where they cannot travel, and technical characteristics of the different devices in circulation. Royal Decree on public highway assistance services, which will define what is the public highway assistance service, characteristics of vehicles and operators, as well as communication obligations during the performance of the service. The state registry of aid on public roads will also be created and thetechnical characteristics of the V16 (warning light) signal will be described, which will replace the triangle in January 2024. All these regulatory changes are already written and sent to the Ministry of the Interior for processing.

CIVITAVECCHIA/ROME Uncovering a thousand years of history The port of Civitavecchia is one of the largest in Italy and is, of course, a destination of MSC Cruises in the Mediterranean. Civitavecchia enjoys a millenary history due to its coves along the coast, which offered a perfect shelter for vessels, making it a natural port long before cruise ships sailed the seas, and in fact the port was known to the Romans as Centumcellae. CAGLIARI The characteristic hills of the ancient village From an MSC ship on the Mediterranean Sea, the view of Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital and main port, is striking. Crowned by its historic

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

As I watching the weekend’s Premier League action, I was caught thinking about two things in particular. Firstly, has whoever signed off the big order for VAR pitchside monitors for the Premier League kept the receipt? And secondly, how little do they pay everyone other than Gary Lineker on Match of the Day if Wrighty is going to have to go and eat kangaroo testicles to top up his earnings? A third thought also popped into my head, again VAR related rather than have fellow referees manning the video, why not have an impartial group of ex-pros or something? You know, like they do in those fancy spot-the-ball competitions and things like that? After all, surely it is the utter inadequacy of

the referees that have meant we need VAR in the first place - and clearly, judging by the penalty given at Vicarage Road, giving them a chance to review it 100 times on video isn’t improving the decision making. And as for the goings-on at Goodison Park, well we will come on to them.

I thought the whole point of VAR is for the referee to get some guidance, for the video assistant to go, ‘fella, I think you might just want to go and have a look at that one again’ so that the referee on the pitch does still get the final say on what is happening on his field of play? What if Anthony Taylor then looked back at the penalty given against Jorginho after the game and still felt his on-field call was correct? How much does he really trust Mike Dean to be able to give a correct decision even with numerous replays? I mean, it’s Mike Dean. Either way, Chelsea should have had Watford tucked up in bed well before they started trying to play keep-ball on their own goalline. The football following world have got themselves a little too excited with Jorginho’s through-ball to Tammy Abraham which saw the latter stick Frank Lampard’s boys 1-0 up early on. Yes, yes he took out five players with one ball forward. Please don’t forget he took out five Watford players with one ball

Up on Merseyside, we saw VAR at it’s inconsistent finest - and the beauty of this episode was that it was no Anthony Taylor behind the controls. The game itself was a shocker with some shocking decisions - not least Alex Iwobi’s decision to put Spurs through two-on-one which led to Dele Alli reminding us why he keeps getting picked. But the refereeing and VARring absolutely dire. There was as much contact in Yerry Mina’s challenge on Son as there was in the Jorginho incident the day before but this time, no penalty. Then, down the other end after he had scored, Dele Alli seemed to punch the ball clear from a corner with his hand right above his head - Taylor also deemed this one not to be a penalty. And then, finally, Martin Atkinson was advised to upgrade Son’s yellow to red, presumably due to the horror freak and accidental injury suffered by Everton’s Andre Gomes who went tumbling into Serge Aurier. The injury was clearly awful given the reaction of anyone near Gomes, but that didn’t mean Son’s challenge was any worse than at first glance. A terrible match played by terrible players officiated by terrible officials. Oh, and Spurs failed to win on the road once again - but that’s almost as standard as VAR shockery now. Having seen Southampton’s bench try to hang on to the ball for as long as possible each time it went their way at the Etihad, I have a lot of time for Peppy G looking to give it back to Southampton players as quickly as possible after City finally found themselves ahead with

Gareth Southgate doesn’t seem to have too many blind spots as England boss, but not finding a place for Walker in his squad is just bizarre. I’d wager he is a better central defender than Michael Keane even though he never plays there for Pep. Speaking of Pep again, although he had a pretty good day with that quick recycling of the ball stuff, he did let himself down with his post-match jab at Sadio Mane. It was hardly the stuff of Sir Alex Ferguson.

stylistic principles in the hope of getting a quick fix out of the Portuguese titlewinner.

Guardiola gave Mane, scorer of a very late-winner to spare Liverpool’s blushes against the Villa, a compliment so thinly veiled behind the diving claim that it was almost see-through. It was a random attack, given that Mane isn’t even the biggest diver on Liverpool’s books and Man City are hardly whiter than white when it comes to the dark arts of modern football.

If Mourinho does end up at Arsenal, he will leave the club in a far worse state than it is right now - and that is saying something.

Either way, Villa led Liverpool until that moment when it would really, really hurt if they threw it away. And throw it away they did - Andrew Robertson of all

people bundling home an equaliser before Mane did what Mane needs to do when Mo Salah is having one of those afternoons. It used to kill Liverpool fans when United used to stage this kind of comeback several times over the course of a season when marching to another title - could their ability to maintain that unbeaten run once more be a sign that they really are ‘mentality giants’ or whatever lame label is being thrown around on social media? Unai Emery was happy with Arsenal’s performance on Saturday. Yes, the manager of Arsenal was happy with a 11 draw at home to Wolves in which his side allowed the opposition to have twenty-five shots on goal. Twenty-five! Having let Liverpool’s youth team score five past them during the week, you’d have thought Emery might have set Arsenal up to be a little more thrifty at the back.

forward though - it’s a small but important detail.

minutes to go. It’s the kind subtle pettiness most of us can applaud quietly.

Christian Pulisic is firmly filed under ‘perfect man-management examples’ right now as the young American followed up his imperfect hat-trick at Burnley with a tap-in. If he keeps this up, Pedro might become a distant memory for Chelsea fans. It was important for Chelsea to get back to winning ways after their midweek defeat to United and 2-1 flattered a much-aged Quique Sanchez Flores more than anything.

I think Southampton told us a lot about who they are as a club in Manchester. The way they celebrated the fact they hadn’t got completely battered by City was sickening. Yes, they led for a large chunk of time and looked like they might complete the most miraculous sevenday comeback in the history of football but, by the end, the expected points went to the expected side - thanks, surprisingly, to a rather adept finish from England’s forgotten man, Kyle Walker.

Jose Mourinho is being linked with the Arsenal hot seat in a way that really does suggest Emery’s days are numbered. Talk is that when Arsenal lose to Leicester next week, he’ll be gone - which is probably more to do with the length of time needed to get Mourinho to agree to the terms on offer than anything to do with the actual results that might save Emery’s job. When Arsene Wenger finally left the Emirates, Arsenal will have probably looked up at the mess United were/are in and thought, ‘yeah, we might want to do it a bit different to that’ and yet, here they are - about to sacrifice all their

Can you really imagine Matteo Guendozi, Joe Willock, Ainsley MaitlandNiles, Bako Saka, Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith-Rowe or even Calum Chambers getting excited by that rumour? No, probably not - but hey, at least Nemanja Matic might get a chance to move back to London.

It must have been a bit wet for Manchester United on the south coast. It was hammering down at Bournemouth and it was clear to see what Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial might be an awesome partnership for Ole, providing the weather conditions are just that little bit better.

It was Josh King who won the game for Bournemouth - a man who now has as many winners against his former club than he does minutes on the pitch for them. Caglar Soyuncu channelled his inner Muzzy Izzet to find acres of space in the Crystal Palace area to give Leicester the lead at Selhurst Park. With minutes to go, Jamie Vardy won the race to the first player to ten Premier League goals this season - and you can do your own Vardy account jokes from here, I’m done with them. West Ham United are in fine West Ham United fettle right now. Following a little run that had the bubbles aimed at Europe, Saturday was the day when the target shifted towards scrambling 40 points as quickly as possible instead. I haven’t checked this stat, funnily enough, but I reckon Steve Bruce has won as many matches in London with Newcastle now as Rafa managed in his entire tenure. Credit to Sean Dyche. I was expecting him to go for VAR in a big way after his Burnley side got done 3-0 at Bramall Lane. But, even though they did have a semi-reasonable shout for two penalties, Dyche fully admitted that his lot were rubbish and Chris Wilder’s team thoroughly deserved yet another win. Wilder for Arsenal/United/England/Barcelona/Baye rn Munich - you can choose. Brighton versus Norwich can be summed up in this simple sentence: Norwich will be relegated in March.

The Plaza GS at El Valle El Plantio GS El Plantio’s medal competition played on the last Tuesday of the month was a triumph for Finnish member Ronnie Campbell, on the day before he returns to colder climes for the winter. Sooner him than me. Hopefully, Ronnie will be visiting us next year. Nearest the pins: Hole 2 – Brian Coupe, Hole 8 – Lyn Young. Third place – Handicap 10.4, Paddy O’Brien – 54.6 shots. Second place – Handicap 9.3, Ray Housley – 53.7 shots First place – Handicap 11.4 – Ronnie Campbell – 51.6 shots.

In glorious sunshine at El Valle the Plaza Golf Society finally got their cobwebs dusted off after a month without a game returning to the venue of our last event. 43 Players took part with 7 guests making the day. Not everyone enjoyed the conditions however and practice does not seem to have paid off for 1 gentleman who took the wooden spoon for a second time, step forward Mike Thornton with 15 points off 9. MATCH FISHING REPORT ABBEY ANGLING This week we fished the 8th round of the Winter Series which incorporated the Annual Memorial Trophy on the 29th October on the river Segura at Murcia. The ramp is now blocked off with concrete blocks, which are stopping everyone from taking their cars down to the pegs. We would recommend the use of a trolley; I have now bought one and used it this week, which enabled me to take two peoples tackle down to our pegs on it, and actually it worked out far easier than using a car to go up and down. The winner of the match and the Memorial Trophy was Mick hill for the second year running with a weight of 12.660kgs, Well Done Mick, in second spot was Marlene Hutchinson with 11.440kgs and following in third place was Richard King with 10.000kgs. 1st Mick Hill with 12.660kgs 2nd Marlene Hutchinson with 11.440kgs 3rd Richard King with 10.000kgs All fishing the feeder using Pellet All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368.

RODS & REELS The 8th round of the Summer Championship was fished on the Embalsa de Pedrera on the 30th October. The roads are now passable but still need more work on them. Our thanks go to Richard Wood for the work he has done here since the storms making access a lot easier, and if all the members chipped in with a little help it would soon be much improved for every anglers benefit. First on the day was Neil McBirnie with 16.900kgs, in second place was Richard Wood with 8.340kgs and coming in third was Dave Hutchinson with 8.250kgs. 1st Neil McBirnie with 16.900kgs 2nd Richard Wood with 8.340kgs 3rd Dave Hutchinson with 8.250kgs All fishing the feeder using pellet There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423. Please note all members of Abbey Angling and Rods and Reels. Federation fees and membership renewal for 2020 is due for payment by the middle of November. Tight Lines TERRY SCREEN
