Spanish election results in hung parliament The Socialists of acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who had gambled that a repeat parliamentary election would strengthen his hand, finished first in Sunday’s Spanish General Election, but with fewer seats than in the previous ballot in April and further away from a

majority. Spain’s far-right Vox party more than doubled its number of lawmakers in the country’s fourth national election in four years, which delivered a deeply fragmented parliament, setting the stage for very difficult government negotiations. “One way or another we’ll form a

progressive government and unblock the political stalemate ... We call upon all the political parties, except for those that work against coexistence and foster hatred,” Sanchez said. The election outcome has left a legislative stalemate with neither the left nor right having a majority. The outcome will require party leaders to be creative,

negotiate seriously this time and, for some, swallow their pride, after higher abstention rates on Sunday showed that voters are tired of repeatedly being called to the ballot box – and certainly don’t want a third election. The conservative People’s Party (PP) was second and Vox third, mostly at the expense of the centre-right Ciudadanos, which slumped from 57 seats to just 10. Vox won 52 seats, up from the 24 seats Continued on page 3

Mobile Colombian Consulate

A converted bus housing the mobile consulate of Colombia visited Torrevieja at the weekend. The office on wheels was officially welcomed by the mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón where he was received by the Consul General of Colombia Araminta Beltrán Urrego. The mayor was accompanied by the Deputy Mayor, Rosario Martínez and Councillor for International Relations, Gitte Lund, as well as the Councillor of Citizen Participation, Inmaculada Montesinos. The mobile consulate parked in the Plaza de la Constitución, in front of the town hall where it was visited by many of the town’s Colombian residents. Consular staff were able to assist visitors with administrative tasks such as passports, notary procedures, citizenship cards, delivery of identity card, passports and more.

clear breaking the stalemate would be even more difficult than before, but said he would wait for the Socialists’ next move. “Sanchez has lost, now it’s much more difficult for him to form a government,” he said. “Spain cannot wait any longer, but it cannot be hostage to his partisan interests.” Another option would gather the majority that toppled the conservatives in a corruption scandal last year and first allowed Sanchez to become prime minister. But that would require Catalan separatist lawmakers to back Sanchez, which would be hard to imagine at a time of such tensions with Catalonia. The third option would be that Ciudadanos would support the Socialists, alongside several regionalist parties. In another setback on Sunday, Sanchez saw his Socialist party lose its majority in the Senate.

Continued from front page with which it debuted in parliament in April. Its increase in the number of votes across Spain was smaller, however, rising by a third. Vox leader Santiago Abascal said he would now work to build what he called “a patriotic alternative” for Spain. Spain has struggled to put stable governments together since new parties emerged from the financial crisis. The new parliament, which will hold its inaugural session in early December, will include 16 parties, including several more regional ones and the anti-capitalist, pro-Catalan independence CUP party. There seems to be three main possibilities to reach the 176-seat majority in parliament, all of them fraught with difficulties. One would see PP abstain and allow Sanchez to lead a minority government. PP leader Pablo Casado, who had in the past repeatedly ruled out supporting Sanchez in any way, made

Far right rises in the Alicante province The rise of the far right was notable in Sunday’s elections with results from the Alicante region showing Vox won 50,000 more votes here than in the last elections in April. Vox is the most voted party in 13 towns such as Crevillente, Catral, Castell de Guadalest, Dolores, Jacarilla, Callosa de Segura, Albatera, Beniferri, San Fulgencio, Pilar de la Horadada, Monforte del Cid, Daya Nueva and Daya Vieja, and the second in five others like l'Alfàs del Pi, Cox, Almoradí, Bigastro, El Pinós and Sant Vicent del Raspeig. Who are Vox? Vox was founded in 2013 as a split from the PP party. Until December 2018, they were virtually unheard of. Some support has come to them because of their direct opposition to regional autonomy and their belief in a united Spain. However, they bring with them many strong right-wing ideological viewpoints that are reminiscent of other ultranationalistic groups. Vox do not agree with a woman’s right to choose an abortion. They have made it clear that they do not support outspoken women’s groups.

They are derogatory of domestic abuse laws which they consider are unfair to men. They want to repeal the gender violence law. They do not agree with samesex marriage and candidates have spoken out about the need for therapy to cure homosexuality. They criticise multi-culturalism, want to stop immigration and believe that all immigrants should have to integrate more. They are strong believers in Spanish sovereignty above all else. They also want to loosen Spain’s gun laws. In the televised pre election

Santiago Abascal

debate last week, Vox leader Santiago Abascal falsely suggested that 70% of gang rapes in Spain were committed by foreigners. Iván Espinosa de los Monteros, a Vox spokesman, joined in the following day, claiming that foreigners were three times more likely to commit rape than Spaniards. Vox has a blacklist of media outlets it views as critical and bans them from its offices and events. They include the newspaper El País, radio network Cadena Ser and the online newspaper Eldiario.es.

(on the third floor of the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre) until Thursday, November 14th. Courses will run from November 18th until June 10th and will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. They are intended for people over 50 and persons interested, provided there are vacancies, they can continue to register after the deadline. The subjects, which are subsidized, have a cost of €30. At the time of registration, prospective students will receive a receipt to pay the corresponding fees.

New look for urban seating Torrevieja’s Urban Councillor Carmen Gómez Candel, announced that work to repair and recondition street seating in the town centre is underway. The 31 stone benches haven’t been repaired in four years and are now being cleaned, waterproofed and repainted by a maintenance crew.

Torrevieja represented at London tourism fair Torrevieja City Council attended the World Travel Market Tourism Fair in London. The event, which turns 40 this year, continues to be one of the most important tourism fairs in the industry together with the ITB in Berlin and the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid. Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, attended the event and said that “Torrevieja must continue to attend these professional meetings to promote our tourism offering and hold meetings with business associations and agents of tourism sectors and, in short, continue working on the promotion of our offer optimizing our resources.” Martínez continued, “there is a growing interest in the Nordic market, especially Icelandic and Finnish, thanks to the improvement of the aerial connections of Alicante-Elche Airport with these emerging destinations on the Costa Blanca.”

Still time to register for Paella contest The Councilor for Fiestas of the City of Torrevieja, Concha Sala, revealed that the registration period is still open to participate in the XXIX Paella Contest, which will be held on December 6, in the market area of Antonio Soria Park, as part of the 2019 Patronal Fiestas. The competition is set to be as popular ever - in just one day the PROP office processed a total of 113 registrations, of which 51 are applications to participate in the contest and the remaining 62 applications are to participate in the general paella making event but outside of the paella contest. Concha Sala explained that there are still a number of slots available for the contest. She also wished to clarify that although there is a limit of 80 paella groups that can participate in the contest itself, according to the rules, the number of groups that can participate outside of the competition and simply come along to cook a paella and join in the fun, is unlimited, so she urges all those groups, clubs and societies who wish to enroll in this popular event do to so at the PROP office before November 15th.

EF Education First released the ninth annual edition of its EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), analyzing data from 2.3 million non-native English speakers in 100 countries and regions. This year, the Netherlands replaces Sweden to become the top scorer while Spain continues to have one of the worst levels of English in Europe coming in at 25th place out of a total of 33 EU countries. Unlike other countries, the number of Spanish people who can speak English has not changed much over the last decade. Spaniards in the 2534 age bracket level have been left far behind their European counterparts in Greece, Portugal and Italy, which had similarly low rates of English speakers 10 years ago."English remains the undisputed global language of business. Our ninth edition of the EF EPI is more comprehensive than ever, providing valuable insights for governments to evaluate their language learning policies and the return on their investments in

language training," said Dr. Minh Tran, EF Executive Director of Academic Affairs. The EF EPI is based on test scores from the EF Standard English Test (EF SET), the world's first free standardized English test. The EF SET has been used worldwide by thousands of schools, companies, and governments for large-scale testing. This year’s ranking uses data from the more than 2,300,000 adults who took EF English tests in 2018, hailing from over 100 countries and 400 cities and regions worldwide. The countries are all sorted into one of five categories - very high, high, moderate, low and very low. The top countries were as follows: 1. Netherlands 2. Sweden 3. Norway 4. Denmark 5. Singapore 6. South Africa 7. Finland 8. Austria 9. Luxembourg & 10. Germany

Vega Baja gets 4 million to hire unemployed to fix DANA damage Labora, the new name for the Valencian Employment and Training Service (Servef ) of the Generalitat, has just announced through its website the details of aid to the value of about four million euros to be awarded to the south of the province of Alicante (plus half a million in the Baix Vinalopó) to deal with the damage caused by the DANA storms. The aid will come in the form of the hiring of unemployed people who will be paid to help fix the damage wrought by the high winds and flood waters that battered the area in September. Thirteen municipalities of the Vega Baja , plus two of the Baix Vinalopó, have been considered as "very affected" and will be supported. Torrevieja and Orihuela take the largest amounts granted, 250,000 euros each, although Torrevieja had requested triple that amount. The distribution of aid is as follows: Almoradí, with 201,000 euros; Benferri, with 153,000; Bigastro, with 164,000; Callosa de Segura , with 190,000; Catral, with 150,000; Cox, with 162,000; Dolores, with 167,000; Rafal, with 160,000; Redován, with 159,000; Pilar de la Horadada , with 177,000; and San Isidro, with 149,000 euros. Santa Pola will receive 243,000 euros. In the province of Valencia, Ontinyent will have 223,000 euros for hiring unemployed. The other 14 municipalities of the Vega Baja are considered "affected" and will receive amounts of up to 100,000 euros which are the following: Albatera

, 86,000; Benejúzar, 95,000; Algorfa 72,000; Benijófar, 72,000; New Daya, 70,000; Daya Vieja, 62,000; Formentera del Segura, 81,000; Rocamora Farm, 73,000; Guardamar del Segura, 100,000; Jacarilla, 71,000; Rojales, 100,000; San Fulgencio, 60,000; San Miguel de Salinas, 83,000; and Los Montesinos , 60,000. In Baix Vinalopó. In addition 100,000 euros is also granted to Elche and in the rest of the province Villena will also receive 100,000 euros. From now on, municipalities can start the selection process for the 400 unemployed people who will be hired for a maximum period of six months. These grants are part of the package of measures approved by the Consell to mitigate the effects of the torrential rains. In total, Labora will allocate around 5.8 million euros for this extraordinary employment plan that will help the municipalities that were affected by torrential rains not only in the province of Alicante but in the wider community of Valencia. All the municipalities that have applied for the subsidies have received aid in an amount less than that requested, which has been justified on the grounds of ‘taking specific circumstances into account’. All can start the selection process immediately and people will be hired before the end of the year. The Valencian Employment and Training Service estimates that this endowment will create around 400 jobs and in order to be considered for the roles

unemployed people must be officially registered with Labora. The people participating in this program will be selected by survey among those registered as job seekers in the Espai Labora of the corresponding municipalities. It will be the responsibility of each City Council to requests to its specific Labora the professions it deems appropriate to perform tasks of general interest in its locality to try to alleviate, as far as possible, the serious situation in which regions such as the Vega Baja have found themselves. The President of the Generalitat said in relation to this aids that "the Generalitat has acted from the outset with total diligence to overcome the very serious problem that has been generated by the Dana. The first thing was to solve the lack of work in the agricultural sector as its demise has destroyed a lot of employment. The emergency plan will help many people without work. The total budget is almost six million euros and now it is the municipalities of the Vega Baja that have to go to the Labora to answer this fundamental need and help people who have lost their jobs.” The head of the Consell added: "We have acted diligently, not like other autonomous communities that speak a lot and do little, for us it has been something fundamental. We have invested a hundred million almost immediately and will continue to support our people."

Eye check can help detect Diabetes

Specsavers Ópticas is backing a global campaign to highlight the risk of diabetes and its links to vision loss and other conditions. Ahead of World Diabetes Day on 14 November, the Specsavers Ópticas stores are encouraging customers to learn if they are at risk of type two

diabetesthrough a free online assessment by the International Diabetes Federation. They are also highlighting the importance of eye tests in helping to detect the condition. According to the federation, out of the 425 million adults suffering from diabetes worldwide, one in three have diabetic retinopathy and one in 10 will develop a vision threatening form of the disease. As there are 3.5 million people with diabetes in Spain , 350,000 people could be at risk of losing their vision due to diabetes. However, by catching it early and managing it well, you can largely prevent vision loss from diabetes. Throughout November, the Specsavers Ópticas stores will be answering questions about diabetes and offering expert advice. Lisa James from Specsavers Ópticas in Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia explains, “Diabetic retinopathy is a condition which affects some diabetics

after a number of years, depending on how well their blood sugar levels are controlled. There are two types, 'non-proliferative', which usually causes no symptoms and isn’t sight threatening, and 'proliferative' retinopathy. With 'proliferative' retinopathy, new blood vessels form in the eye. These vessels are extremely weak and also in the wrong place; as a result, the vessels can break and leak blood. This causes both scar tissue to develop and the fluid in the eye to become cloudy. Occasionally, retinal detachment can occur too. It is important for diabetics to have their eyes tested every one to two years, because the early stages of retinopathy might not result in any symptoms, but an optometrist can detect any changes so that treatment can be given as soon as the problem arises. Occasionally symptoms may occur before the problem has been detected, such as blurred vision and vision loss, usually in both eyes but sometimes affecting one eye more than the other. If you spot any of these signs, please visit an optometrist for a complete eye examination as soon as possible.” Specsavers Ópticas are offering free eye tests and eye health information for diabetes sufferers and those at risk of developing it in store throughout November. Visitwww.specsavers.esto find your nearest store and book an eye test. For more information about diabetes and eye health visitwww.idf.org/eyehealth Visit www.worlddiabetesday.org to do the assessment.

Guardamar port dredging will last for three months The City Council of Guardamar has just begun the dredging works required for the new channel of the mouth of the Segura River. This is much needed after the lack of depth has paralysed fishing and sports activities for weeks. In the first phase the earthworks are being carried out for the creation of a sediment deposit where the sands extracted from Segura will deposited, according to a press release from the government team. The site of the relocation is a municipal plot that is located a few meters from the port. This is the first step to make the channel navigable again and recover its dimensions so that fishing and tourist vessels can once again use the port. In a week’s time, the dredging itself will begin with the arrival of a floating pontoon and a backhoe that “will be placed in the river, and will remove the sediment that has been deposited. This will be loaded into trucks and relocated to the nearby warehouse which is under construction. Although the time frame for the execution of the works has been contracted at three months "we will do everything possible so that the deadlines are shorter and that the economic

businesses that operate in the area of the river mouth return to normal at the earliest opportunity," said the government team. The dredging works will extract some 30,000 cubic meters of sediment which have accumulated through sandy contributions from the waves, the sea tides and the Segura itself. At this point in time the depth is just over a meter when it is usually between three and three-and-ahalf. The cost of the operation is 300,000 euros and will be borne by the City Council, which believes that it is necessary to carry out dredging as a matter of

urgency and to get a sufficient depth for the required navigation. The official press release does not indicate which company has been awarded the contract – information which also does not appear either in the formal State Contracting guide, given the urgent nature of the tender award. Neither is there any information given on the procedures for environmental authorisation by the Generalitat. The mouth of the Segura is part of a protected area and the sludge removed requires special treatment, since these sediments are not always in the best environmental condition.

Help make music on the Coast Formed around one year ago, the Royal British Legion Concert Band has already built an excellent reputation playing both at both RBL and non-military engagements. The band currently has 11 members and is looking to expand, particular with string instruments so that the band has a full concert offering. It now has an official band singer in Valerie Lynch, and is looking for around five or six new members of any age or nationalities that play any instrument, particularly trumpet, clarinet or violin - although there are always vacancies for brass, woodwind and percussion musicians. The band has local roots evolving from the Alpengold Oompah band, the Vega Baja Big Band, Just Brass and most recently the Phoenix Concert Band and now wants to add to the type of instruments in the band to offer a more ‘concert’ sound. Under the guidance of musical director David Last, the band rehearses every Tuesday at 4pm in the basement of the Sophia

Wellness Centre at La Regia and plays a wide variety of music from songs from the musicals, marches, ballads, sing-a-long, novelty pieces as well as carols and hymns for special services and occasions. Anyone interested in joining the band is welcome to call in and have a chat. Music readers are preferable, but lessons can be given and being a friendly bunch, Royal British Legion Band members are happy to help ‘rusty’ players find their feet again and rediscover their musical passion. The band has most recently played at the Royal British Legion Poppy Launch in Benidorm and The Remembrance services at Mil

Palmeras and La Siesta Church. Its next public engagement will be Carols in the Square on 13th December in Torrevieja, where the band will be joined by musicians from the Spanish Wind and Youth Band, the Crescendo and Studio 32 Choir and any other choirs that wish to join in the fun. This event is also in memory of Bill Singleton, founder band member who died recently. GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Brexit worries are on the backburner for now, with general election buzz taking over as the main risk for the pound. Although Brexit fears and frustrations are likely to resurface, the election on 12 December will need to be addressed first. Uncertainty surrounding the election has created volatility for the pound, seeing it lost ground to every currency this past week and falling by an average of 0.7% against the other major players. The only positive for the pound was that it at least shared last place, as a drop in safe haven purchases sent the Japanese yen down to the same level. Significant data from the UK included the purchasing managers' index readings for manufacturing (49.6) and services (50.0), both of which were better than expected. However, the Bank of England’s downgrade of its economic outlook and its non-unanimous vote (7 votes to 2) to maintain bank rates worked to counter the good news.

EUR While it was a bad week for the pound and the yen, it was only marginally better for the euro. It added a seventh of a cent against the pound but lost an eight of a US cent. Against the other major currencies, the euro fell by an average of 0.6%. Data across Europe included PMIs, investor confidence and retail sales. While all were better than expected, none did enough to convince investors that the euro zone economy isn’t struggling. German data was also more positive than analysts had forecast, although manufacturing PMIs of 42.1 are still dangerously close to a ten-year low. On Thursday, the European Central Bank confirmed "protracted weakness in euro area growth dynamics”, reiterating the bank's readiness "to adjust all of its instruments, as appropriate, to ensure that inflation moves towards its aim". ECB President Christine Lagarde spoke for the first time in her new role, steering the focus away from monetary policy and instead calling for “strength, resolve and courage" in European capitals.

Elche father locks daughters in office A father left his two daughters locked in an office in Elche for three days, it was revealed this week. The man’s ex wife alerted the National Police after the two children were seen asking for help through a window. Officers arrested the father of the children, aged 12 and 15, for leaving his daughters locked up with no means of communication for three days. The man denied the accusations, claiming that he only took the girls to the office because his current partner has three young children and they do not have enough space to fit two adults and five children at their current address. The man had been sharing custody of the two girls with his ex-wife and last Thursday,

his fifteen-day period of custody began. It was from that Thursday until Sunday that the girls claim to have been held incommunicado in their father's office. Elche Police were alerted on Sunday by a woman who called and reported that her ex-husband had their two daughters locked in an office located on Calle Lope de Vega. A patrol car was immediately dispatched and the mother explained that a friend of hers had been in touch after seeing the two girls asking for help from an office window, located on the first floor or mezzanine. National Police tried unsuccessfully to locate the father and, as he not materialise, they chose to force open the door to the office and

free the girls. The office building was inspected by the police and did not meet habitability standards – it lacked a shower, beds and kitchen. The girls assured the police officers that they had been locked there since the Thursday and that their father only came at noon to bring them a snack and at night to sleep there with them. Their mobile phones had run out of battery so they could not communicate with the outside world to ask for help. Once freed, the mother took custody of both girls and the National Police mobilized to find the father who, once located was arrested for a crime of abandonment of minors.

Woman seriously injured in Torrevieja crash A woman was seriously injured after her vehicle overturned in Torrevieja at the weekend. Police and firefighters had to cut the woman free from the wreckage after the woman, believed to be in her 30s, became trapped in

the overturned car. The accident took place on Calle Penedés, just south of the centre of town next to the N-332, at around 5.30pm on Sunday. It is not thought that any other vehicles were involved in the

incident which saw the woman’s car overturn and collide with a signpost. The woman was still conscious when fire crews cut her from the wreckage before she was rushed to Torrevieja hospital.

Don’t touch my Whatsapp The ‘No me toques el Whatsapp!” exhibition is on display in Rojales until November 17th. The expo showcases a series of videos and photos highlighting violence against and control of women and with this initiative, aims to raise awareness among young people between the ages of 14 and 30. One of the principal objectives of the expo is to

highlight the importance of detecting the first signs of control. Studies conducted by specialized institutions and agencies in Spain have alerted to the increase in gender violence in adolescent couples. In the government commissioned study Perception of gender violence in adolescence and youth, a sample set of 2,457 people of both sexes aged

15 to 29 years were surveyed. One in three young people considers it inevitable or acceptable in some circumstances to ‘control a partner’s schedule’, to ‘prevent a partner from seeing their relatives or friends’, to ‘not allow the partner to work or study’ or to ‘tell them things they can or cannot do’. The latest studies and research

warn that young people are more tolerant than the general population when it comes to what is called ‘control violence’. Another study, conducted by the Andalusian Women's Institute showed that 65% of the adolescent population (14-16 years old) presents sexist attitudes or ways of thinking. According to the study, 60% of

adolescents agree with the legitimacy of male authority in the couple, and 61.2% of boys and 41.7% of girls believe that jealousy is a test of love. Experts agree that these figures are especially worrisome since there is a close link between jealousy, control and gender violence. The exhibition in Rojales, at the Museo Arqueológico de Rojales, aims to bring the topic out into the open and encourages dialogue with teenagers about the issues of privacy, control, jealousy and violence. The expo runs until November 17th and entry is free.

Seagate Wealth Management

Keeping it Local M

any people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of supervision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but on‐going support and monitoring of the investments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental principles: the strength of the relationship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meetings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up to date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are performing. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control.

If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transferring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

Traditional Spanish Christmas experience Organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo the range of ‘Discover the Real Spain’ trips and tour aims to expose hidden gems to expats and holiday makers alike. Begona has recently been organising trips to marvellous Madrid, the country’s iconic capital city and is now offering a real festive treat. The trip takes place on 9th and 10th December and includes a panoramic tour of the city by coach and a guided walking tour. There will be plenty of time to explore the cultural heritage of this architectural hotspot such as the San Miguel Food Market, The Prado Museum, the beautiful old town or the Bernabeu stadium.

Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the centre of the country. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government, and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. Madrid has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Royal Theatre with its restored 1850 Opera House, the Buen Retiro Park, the 19th-century National Library building; many national museums, and the Golden Triangle of Art. Cibeles Palace and Fountain have become one of the monument symbols of the

city. However, the real heart of this trip is to see the stunning Christmas Lights of the Spanish capital and experience the shops in all the festive glory. As twinkling lights, Christmas decorations and sparkling window displays transform the city, magic fills the air and Madrileños prepare to celebrate their favourite holiday of the year. From the end of November the city’s streets, buildings and squares twinkle with colourful lights created by renowned Spanish designers, architects and graphic designers. Last year there were new designs adorning the whole city, from the outskirts to its most popular areas. Sky-scraping Christmas trees are placed around the city in places like Puerta del Sol, Plaza San Juan de la Cruz, Plaza España and Plaza de Colón (Calle Génova). This city comes alive at Christmas, and you can discover it all with this fully organised trip. Accommodation will be at a quality hotel on the Gran Via and is on a bed and breakfast basis and is priced at just 135e. To book you place on the above trip and arrange pick up call Begona on 622 188 772.

Welcome to La

Just arrived and you can already feel the magic of the place as it envelops you. Keep looking and you learn that this energy is real. Travel from landscape to landscape, through palm-filled valleys, deep ravines, black sand beaches with crystal-clear waters, luxuriant ancient forests refreshed with babbling streams … A natural paradise, home to species that have disappeared everywhere else. La Gomera is so valuable that it is a Biosphere Reserve. From a distance La Gomera appears as an impenetrable fortress ringed with soaring rock walls. Noodle-thin roads wiggle their way alongside cliff faces and up ravines, and the tiny white specks that represent houses seem impossibly placed on inaccessible crags. Viewed from up-close, however, that rough landscape translates into lush valleys, awe-inspiring cliffs and stoic rock formations sculpted by ancient volcanic activity and erosion. La Gomera does not offer the standard tourist resort trappings of golden beaches and an animated nightlife. It is also relatively laborious to reach; the ferry from Los Cristianos is a filter of sorts, visitors here tend to be walkers heading for the

Gomera

myriad hiking trails that weave across this lush and spectacular island. La Gomera also has a tangible bohemian air; and you will spy plenty of grey ponytails from foreign residents who arrived here in the 1960s flower power days – and stayed. Peaceful and beautiful. This is La Gomera, known as "Isla Mágica" (the magical island). It is the second smallest of the Canary Islands, measuring barely 20 kilometres from north to south. It is an ecological treasure, and its coast is dotted with small beaches set between cliffs. It has a rugged coastline with small blacksand beaches and is a paradise for nature lovers. Its wild, mountainous landscape is packed with contrasts: in just a few kilometres you go from palm-covered valleys to huge canyons; from arid coastal areas with waters ideal for scuba diving, to fascinating forests, crammed with vegetation. The Garajonay National Park is particularly outstanding. It is a prehistoric forest with the UNESCO World Heritage designation. Exploring its tracks and trails is a unique experience. You can enjoy the peace of La

Gomera on the many routes that cross the island from one end to another. The island is perfect for walking, with surprising outings possible through impressive countryside. One of its most surprising traditions is the "silbo": this is a system of communication, unique to the island, whereby syllables are spelled out by whistling. The islanders used this form of communication for centuries on account of the rugged relief here. It allowed simple messages to be sent across gorges, overcoming distances and the complications of the local terrain. It is well worthwhile going to one of the exhibitions and competitions that take place nowadays. It was awarded the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity designation in 2009. La Gomera's airport is in the south and offers good communications, with flights to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. There are also daily boat and ferry services to and from Tenerife. The best way to get around inland is by renting a car. Be sure not to miss the simple but delicious local cuisine, with stews, soft cheeses and honey extracted from palm trees.

Our friend has changed We are a group of five middle aged ladies living in Spain, who have always knocked around together – going out for a weekly coffee or shopping. Lately we’ve all noticed our one friend has become very judgemental and frankly, unkind. She is also bossy and likes us to do as she says. Recently we joined a social group which involved performing. We all loved it, and went back the second week. Our friend stated she didn’t like it and announced that ‘we’ would not be going again. We are not sure how this happened but she’s kind of insinuated that if we went alone, this would be the end of our friendship with her. The other ladies in our group really enjoyed the experience and wanted to keep going. She also thinks because she is the one with the car, we’d have no choice but to go along with it. We thought about making our own way and sharing a taxi which wouldn’t be expensive split four ways, but our friend is making us feel very guilty. Doesn’t this sound like playground behaviour? You’d expect it from children, but not adults. Either way it’s wrong. Just as you should stand up to a bully at school, I would recommend standing up to this lady. You say she has changed recently. You must all be wondering why her personality is different. Has she gone through some disruption in her personal life recently? Something possibly that has triggered this change in behaviour? You say you are ladies of a certain age – is she perhaps menopausal? You could sit her down and tell her that you are intending to continue with the group, and you’d love her to give it another go. Also, one person in your circle should gently try and talk to her about her attitude. It’s possible she hasn’t realised her behaviour is as bad as you say.

Spanish Supermarkets highs and lows It's easy to believe each and every supermarket in Spain is similar in terms of choice, range, quality and price – although national consumer organisation OCU has revealed this is not always the case. We all know we have to visit several stores to get everything you need, or want, meaning customers tend less to have a particular favourite; otherwise, most will admit they merely go to their nearest one. But the OCU's detailed study has revealed we can save hundreds, if not thousands, of euros by shopping around – and that sometimes, how much we shell out on our groceries is a postcode lottery. The average Spanish household spends €5,113 per year in the supermarket – not just on food, but other household items such as cleaning products and basic toiletries – a rise of 2.6 percent on figures from this time last year, although still a lot less than before the start of the financial crisis in 2008. One thing is clear, according to the OCU: prices have not come down since before the recession, meaning if people were spending more prior to 2008, it was because they were buying more. Even then, the average Spanish household could save up to €1,063 per year on their shopping if they paid more attention to prices and were willing to seek out the supermarkets with the best deals. The annual saving achieved is 12.3 percent higher than it was a year ago for exactly the same effort, which shows

how prices are continuing to climb, reveals the organisation.

Which are the cheapest supermarkets nationally? Not all supermarkets on the OCU's list are nationwide, so you may not have heard of some of the less-pricey – for example, the most economical of the lot, according to the study, is Andalucíabased Dani, where the average Spanish household would spend €4,345.05 per year, or €83.56 a week. Those where you'll spend less than €4,700 a year are, in descending order, Gadis Híper (€4,670.76), Cash Fresh, Supeco, Vidal, Familia, Alcampo (€4,500.59) and Castilla y León-based Tífer (€4,448.92). Out of 89 supermarkets, with Dani being number 89 and the most expensive, Sánchez Romero (€7,748.22 per year, or €149 a week) at number one, Alcampo comes in at number 87, Vidal at 85, Supeco at 84, Híperdino at 80, Mercadona at 78, Superdino at 77, and El Jamón at 76. Día Maxi is at 67, Consum at 65, and Mas y Mas at 64. The latter, founded in Pedreguer (northern Alicante province) is Mercadona's largest competitor in the Valencia region, and its prices are nearidentical in most branches at first glance – although the OCU's research found the

average household would spend €4,746.98 per year (€91.29 per week) in Mercadona and €4,870.03 annually (€93.65 per week) in Mas y Mas, or a weekly difference of €2.37. Alteza is 63rd on the list and Carrefour is 61st, although Carrefour Market stands at number 41, only just below the Spar (at 40) and two above Eroski (at 43), and Carrefour Express at number 22, just a

few stores cheaper than Hípercor (at number 18). El Corte Inglés and Supercor are 13th and 14th respectively, whilst Bip Bip is 11th from top and Aprop 12th.

And the cheapest by province? According to the organisation, the cheapest supermarket in the south of the country tends to be the French chain Alcampo – this is the case in Sevilla, Murcia, Granada, Jerez de la Frontera in Cádiz province, Almería and Marbella, although Día Maxi is not far behind in the

latter, and Mercadona comes out the most economical in Málaga and in Huelva, with Día Maxi and El Jamón close runners-up. Surprisingly, Carrefour is among the second-cheapest in Huelva, despite typically being among the highest-priced, largely due to its wider variety (with a growing international section) and convenience (as a hypermarket, you can also pick up anything from books, DVDs and clothes to household paint and gardening items at the same time as your bread and milk). For Cartagena (Murcia), the largest town near the Mar Menor area, Mercadona is cheapest, followed by Día Maxi and, again, Carrefour, then Eurospar fourth. Heading up the coast in a north-easterly direction, Alcampo is the cheapest in Alicante city – a long way behind Mercadona, the second-cheapest, and as is the case with all towns and cities which possess one so far on the list, El Corte Inglés department store food hall is the most expensive by a wide margin. This said, as well as the convenience of being able to buy all your clothes, accessories, jewellery, cosmetics, electronics and, basically, all your Christmas gifts there, using your store card and paying it off with a chosen set figure every month, the quality and variety is also superior. El

Corte Inglés is where you would tend to shop if you were throwing on a dinner party and were keen to impress, but didn't have time to go mooching around all the individual delicatessens and wine merchants'. Still in the province of Alicante, Supeco is the cheapest in Elche, followed by Mercadona, and Dialprix and Hípercor – part of the Corte Inglés chain – are the most expensive. Valencia city's cheapest supermarket is Alcampo, followed closely by Vidal on the Avenida Burjassot (the branch on the C/ Escultor Ricart Boix is, for some reason, more expensive), followed by Kuups and then Mercadona. Consum is the most expensive, except the branch on the C/ Sueca, according to the OCU's study. Overall, Alcampo is the cheapest supermarket in 31 of the 65 towns and cities studied, whilst Mercadona is the most economical in 16 out of 65, making it the third-most affordable on the high street. This year's most expensive city for supermarket shopping is Palma de Mallorca, which has risen from second place last year, a slot now occupied by Barcelona. Towns and cities where it costs the least to go grocery shopping are Almería, Ciudad Real, Jerez de la Frontera, Puertollano, Vigo, and the cheapest of all, Zamora in Castilla y León, close to the Portuguese border. By regions, Galicia, followed by Murcia, are the most economical for grocery shopping, whilst the Balearics and Catalunya cost the most.

Inditex workers to get Friday afternoons off to boost productivity Inditex has opted to cut working hours for its office staff on a Friday and offer flexible start and finish times Monday to Thursday in a bid to see whether productivity and staff wellbeing increases. The move by Spain's largest highstreet clothing empire comes after Microsoft in Japan opted to give its staff three-day weekends and found productivity increased by over 40 percent. But Inditex store staff will not be able to pack up work at 3pm on a Friday, since these need to be open to the public all day from Monday to Saturday inclusive. In a recent announcement by the management of the firm founded by Spain's richest man Amancio Ortega, 83, and his late ex-wife Rosalía Mera, office employees can now choose whether to work from 9.30am to 7pm or 9am to 6.30pm. It is not clear how long their lunch hours will be, but these are likely to be around an hour and a half to two hours, since the standard working day in Spain is eight hours net of lunchtime but including the morning 'breakfast break' which is typically about half an hour to 40 minutes. On Fridays, they will work straight through from 9pm to 3pm, albeit with the usual 'breakfast break'. This means their 40-hour working

week is, in practice, only reduced slightly, to around 37 or 38 hours, but the aim is to give them more free time to relax or spend on hobbies, domestic chores or with friends or family during what are statistically the least productive hours of the week, a Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Podemos breakaway political party Más País!, led by its outgoing key member Íñigo Errejón,

wants to reduce the standard working week to 32 hours if it gains power, either by reducing hours per day or cutting the week to four days. The majority of Spanish businesses, especially customer-facing ones such as offices and shops, still start between 8am and 10am in the morning and close between 8pm and 9pm at night with lunch breaks of between three and fourand-a-half hours, although the debate

as to whether a more 'conventional' day with a shorter lunch break and a maximum 6pm finish should be adopted has been on the table for some years, given the inconvenience to customers of shops being shut for a large part of the day and workers not seeing their families until around 9.30 at night. Primary school hours have conventionally been from 9am to 5pm with lunch from noon until 2pm, meaning children and parents pass like ships in the night, but several regions have been adopting more northern European hours for schools. In the Comunidad Valenciana, the vast majority of primary schools now run from 9am to 2pm with only a couple of short breaks, although free after-school clubs offering sports, arts, playtime, and remedial academic activities are normally in place until 6pm with paidfor sessions until 7pm or 8pm so that parents who work in the afternoons do not have to find childcare when school finishes. Fire near Alicante airport Passengers at Alicante-Elche airport were hoping not to endure delayed flights after a fire ignited at a nearby garbage dump. The fire was at the rubbish tip located in the municipality of Elche, next to the airport. The first fire truck came from the airport itself, followed by two more from the local fire stations.

Luckily the airfield was not affected and planes were able to take off and land. It is unsure how the fire started, but a bundle of clothes in a landfill is thought to the main source of the inferno. The fire was located near one of the airport’s car park, according to the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters of the Diputacion de Alicante.

Ryanair is greenest airline in Europe Budget-airline Ryanair is the greenest in Europe, with each passenger producing almost half the Co2 of its upmarket competitors. A traveller embarking on one of the Irish airline giant’s planes creates 67g of Co2 emissions for every kilometre travelled, compared to an average of 120g per kilometre for those who fly with other European airlines. Europe’s largest airline is aiming to reduce the level of Co2 per passenger per kilometre to below 60g by 2030, having brought it down from 82g in the last decade.

Ryanair’s chief marketing officer, Kenny Jacobs, said: “Ryanair is the greenest and cleanest airline in Europe that operates with the youngest fleet and the highest occupancy rates in the industry.” The low-cost travel company transported 13.8 million passengers throughout October, emitting 1,200kt of Co2. Last month a study by the International Council on Clean Transportation found that Co2 emissions from flights are rising 70% faster than predicted by the UN.

Thousands of Brit expats in Spain to be denied vote in UK general election Thousands of Britons living in Spain will be denied a vote in the upcoming General Election despite Brexit being a key campaign issue. The 15-year-old rule means that UK nationals living abroad for that duration are denied a vote in their homeland. The win for the Conservative party will no doubt see a push towards an EU

exit, while if the left-leaning parties won a majority, the possibility of a People’s Vote will be much higher. many British expats living in the Costa del Sol, who said they felt the law was unfair and they should have been able to vote in the 2016 referendum. It is estimated around 60 percent of the 4.9 million British people living abroad can’t vote.

Catalan separatists who fled Spain prepare for arrest warrants Three former members of the Catalan regional government who fled Spain after the independence unilateral declaration of October 2017 have said they will hand themselves over to local authorities as soon the latter receive European arrest warrants issued by Spain’s Supreme Court. Toni Comín and Lluís Puig fled Carles with Belgium to Puigdemont, the ex-premier who led the failed breakaway bid from Spain, while Clara Ponsatí went to Scotland. Their lawyer, Gonzalo Boye, said on Tuesday that his clients will voluntarily walk into a police station “as soon as we receive the summons.” Court Supreme Spain’s reactivated European arrest warrants against the three after handing down a decision last month in the trial of 12 other leaders of the 2017 secession bid. Nine of the defendants received prison sentences for sedition and misuse of public funds. Now the court is hoping that the separatist leaders who fled the country will be transferred to Spain so they can face the same legal proceedings as the ones who stayed behind. The international warrants have also been sent to Interpol in case any of the three attempts to move to a non-European Union country. Carles Puigdemont went through a similar process in

HAVE YOU PAID OFF YOUR MORTGAGE EARLY? Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Did you know that in the Valencian Community alone, around 35,000 mortgages were granted this year, so far? Well it’s true! Whether they were for primary residences or holiday homes, that’s a lot of people in a position to qualify for a Spanish mortgage. Now, most people pay their mortgage on time every month, until they decide to sell the property and upsize, downsize or relocate somewhere else, at which time the outstanding balance of the mortgage, would be paid back to the bank. Usually, there is a penalty to pay the mortgage off early. This is something that you and the bank would have agreed upon, at the signing of the application. In my experience, this penalty can vary, however is more often than not, around 1%* of the outstanding balance. For example, if you owe €100,000, then a 1% penalty to pay the mortgage back early, would be €1,000. When paying off a mortgage, due to the home being sold, the bank will send out a representative to appear at the Notary on the day of completion. They will collect the cheque for the

outstanding amount of the loan, and sign the mortgage off as, paid in full. This will then get sent to be registered in the Land Registry, confirming that you have paid the loan back. So what happens if you pay the mortgage off and you’re not ready to sell your property? Most people think that they just pay it back, and that’s the end of that. Well, until it has been cleared in the Land Registry, it will still show that the property has a registered debt against it. It is very common that the banks do nothing about clearing the mortgage in the Land Registry, until you instruct them to do so. So if you are in the position of having paid your mortgage off early, you need to make sure this is cleared in the Land Registry too. Speak to your bank and tell them you would like this debt cleared in the Land Registry. You can easily ask your Lawyer or Fiscal Representative to obtain a Land Registry search, to make sure your home is legally registered as, debt free. My advice - whether you’re paying off your mortgage due to the property being sold, or paying it back before you’re ready to sell, check with the bank first, regarding fees and paperwork. *As with any legal costs regarding mortgages, you should always check direct with the bank. For more tips and advice on selling your home in Spain, head to www.80ThingsReport.com for a complimentary copy of my 80 Things Not To Neglect When Selling Your Home, report.

The House of the seven chimneys, Madrid

The House of the seven chimneys, Madrid The “Casa de las siete chimeneas” is located at number 1 of Plaza del Rey and used to be the love nest of Captain Zapata and his wife Elena. But the happiness of their marriage was short-lived: the soldier died in the war in Flanders. His wife was found dead in his bedroom, but the cause of her death was never clarified. The fact that the body disappeared without a trace did not help either. Since then, the ghost of a woman is said to walk among the seven chimneys that crown the roof of the palace. Thorax Hospital, Terrassa This former hospital in Terrassa, which specialised in patients with very serious respiratory illnesses, was for

Jungle”. The slow and painful death of the sick provoked a general psychosis that in many cases ended in suicide. Cortijo Jurado, Málaga Terrifying stories are told about this mansion in the neighbourhood of Campanillas in Málaga. The Heredia family, from the high bourgeoisie, was the owner of the farm-house, and suspected of the disappearance of girls on whom satanic rites were allegedly practiced. Many people claim to have heard strange noises, and others claim to have seen human figures in the window. Some versions claim that there are instruments of torture in the basement and that the victims are buried under the house.

Sanatorium of Santo Ángel de la Guarda, Madrid This sanatorium was built in 1941 to treat some of the serious diseases that were plaguing the civilian population back then, such as tuberculosis, leprosy, polio, fibrosis and lung cancer. It was eventually converted into a psychiatric hospital until 1995, when it closed its doors once and for all. Until not long ago it was possible to go inside and find the records and personal objects of former patients. Those who have been there speak of mysterious presences in the corridors, electrical devices that stop working for no reason and doors that close violently. Many people also claim to have seen lights in the immensity of plants like lanterns walking around. The mystery of Ochate, Burgos In this enigma, it is not only a house but the entire village of Ochate where paranormal mysteries take place. This village, abandoned and uninhabited since the middle of the 19th century, suffered different epidemics that decimated the population. In 1981 even the presence of a UFO was detected.

Iberia to buy out Air Europa Iberia’s holding company has reportedly struck a deal to buy Air Europa for the sum of €1 billion, which it will hand over in full on the date of the official contract completion. International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns Spain's main national carrier and also British Airways, is expected to be the new owner of the Globalia airline by the second half of next year. The deal now has to be approved by the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMV) to ensure the takeover will not lead to a monopoly or near-monopoly situation, but details of the acquisition seem to suggest it will be considered above board and duly signed off. Air Europa's brand will be maintained initially, and the company will remain as a separate entity within the Iberia umbrella and will continue to be run by its current CEO, Luis Gallego. Founded in 1984 under the trading name of Air España, S.A., before changing its brand to Air Europa two years later, the Spanish carrier has a fleet of 42 aircraft and is owned by Globalia Corporación Empresarial, S.A. It operates flights from most Spanish airports to destinations on every continent. The takeover will mean IAG's Madrid airport hub will become a fierce rival for the four largest

hubs in Europe – London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schipol, Frankfurt, and Paris Charles de Gaulle, all of which serve longhaul destinations directly and are the most common connection points for flights from elsewhere on the continent. In addition, the transaction will place Iberia as the market leader for European connections to Latin America and the Caribbean, and offer 'significant potential synergies' in terms of cost-saving and investment, according to a press release from IAG. The firm forecasts a share price rise for the first complete year and an investment return for the fourth consecutive year by the end of 2020. IAG justifies its strategy by stating that the Air Europa acquisition will add a 'new, competitive and profitable' airline to the firm's base, turning Madrid into a leading European hub ad

allowing the corporation to become a market leader in the southern Atlantic, generating 'added value' for shareholders, according to CEO Willie Walsh. Globalia CEO Javier Hidalgo says the move will strengthen Air Europa's present and future and it will 'continue in its current line' for the foreseeable time to come. Luis Gallego says Madrid, as a hub, has 'been left behind' by other major European international airports, and the purchase will allow it to compete on a level playing field as well as 'possibly becoming a connecting point between Latin America and Asia'. IAG points out that Air Europa is one of the main privately-run airlines in Spain, with regular national and global flights to 69 destinations, a turnover as at the close of 2018 of €2.1bn, net profits of €100 million, and 11.8 million passengers in one year.

‘X’ marks the spot on Treasure Island The Rojales Pantomime Group are busily rehearsing their next swashbuckling and very funny pantomime to be performed January 30, 31st and February 1st – TREASURE ISLAND – an hilarious script by Ben Crocker.

On 19th October Cheers Bar, San Miguel de Salinas held a fund raising Dog Show on APAH's behalf. It was the brainchild of APAH's Kennel Manager Debbie, who worked hard with the owner of Cheers Bar to make the day a success. The total amount raised was 660 euros, and everyone who went along agreed it was a great day.

A staggering 650 euros was raised for the Torrevieja animal shelter. A Halloween party was held at the Mi Sol bar / restaurant at the Mi Sol Park, Torrevieja organised by Lisa (left) and Lesley, along with their gang, with volunteer Laura serving a witches brew. As well as such a large donation for the shelter everyone had a great time eating, dancing and, of course, drinking. If you care to know more about the shelter and animals or indeed like to help in any way contact – alberguecats@gmail.com

The weather was glorious, the buffet put on by Cheers was delicious and APAH's usual Dog Show judge Paul, along with his marshall Maurice generously agreed to go along and judge the six classes that were held; with a lot of dogs in attendance. All in all a great day!

They are ably assisted by their loyal and trusted friends, husband and wife team Hans and Gretel who run the local Inn. Come along and enjoy a sizzling score and a hilarious script and we encourage you to join in the fun and come to the show dressed in Halloween costume, the

King explains why Doctor Sleep 'redeems' The Shining movie Doctor Sleep's first reviews proved the film to be a worthy sequel to The Shining – but Stephen King has now explained in what way Doctor Sleep has 'redeemed' the original film. Doctor Sleep is based on King's novel of the same name and acts as a sequel to both the late '70s movie by director Stanley Kubrick as well as King's book. The Haunting of Hill House's Mike Flanagan took over to adapt Doctor Sleep for the big screen and King has said that his adaptation 'redeems' what he didn't

like about Kubrick's The Shining. "I read the script to this one very, very carefully. Because obviously I wanted to do a good job with the sequel, because people knew the book The Shining, and I thought, 'I don't want to screw this up'," King explained. "Mike Flanagan, I've enjoyed all his movies, and I've worked with him before on Gerald’s Game. So, I read the script very, very carefully and I said to myself, 'Everything that I ever disliked about the Kubrick version of The Shining is

redeemed for me here'." Flanagan, meanwhile, has revealed that King didn't interfere in developing the sequel once he'd approved the script. "After he's exercised his approvals, he backs off, and he does it very intentionally," Flanagan explained. "[King] says, 'The book is the book and I want the movie to be yours. I don't want to interfere'. "But you know that, as soon as it's done, he's going to see it, and you know, because of what happened with The

Shining, if he doesn't like what you do, he's not going to be shy." "So, there's this huge fear," Flanagan

added. "Even though he's not over your shoulder, there's this sense every day that, yeah, he's going to see the movie."

Harrods to launch new H Beauty stores outside London Harrods has announced plans to a new beauty store which will be its first standalone store outside of London. The historic retailer’s new H Beauty brand will launch in spring 2020 at the Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex, closely followed by a second store in Milton Keynes. The store at Intu Lakeside will stock a range of premium and luxury beauty brands including Chanel, Dior and Huda

As well as stocking beauty products, the site will also house a “coffee-to-cocktail” bar for customers to enjoy as part of the shopping experience. This follows the opening of the retailer’s new beauty retail space and skincare emporium in its Knightsbridge store in June and October respectively.

Eating alone is bad for mental health Eating alone, once considered an oddity, has become commonplace for many across the Western world. Fast food chains are promoting eating on the go or “al desko.” Why waste time in your busy day sitting down at a table with others? Surveys indicate that a third of Britons regularly eat on their own. OpenTable, an online restaurant booking app, found that solo dining in New York increased by 80 percent between 2014 and 2018. And in Japan, the world capital of solo dining, a trend for “low interaction dining” has taken off. Restaurants are opening which facilitate the ultimate solo dining experience: passing bowls of noodles through black curtains into individual booths. Is this a worrying trend? Experts think so. Research is revealing the negative impacts of eating alone, which has

been found to be linked to a variety of mental and physical health conditions, from depression and diabetes to high blood pressure. So it’s cheering that hundreds of food sharing initiatives have sprung up around the world which aim to improve food security and sustainability while combating loneliness. There’s London’s Casserole Club, for example, whose volunteers share extra portions of home-cooked food with people in their area who aren’t always able to cook for themselves. Or South Africa’s Food Jams, social gatherings in which participants are paired up, preferably with strangers, and given a portion of the meal to prepare. Such initiatives offer lessons of all kinds to those thinking about how our food systems need to change. This is why we have been researching them, in our several ways, for the last few years. So why has eating together declined? There are a variety of reasons.

Authors such as Michael Pollan argue that it is due to the general undervaluing of home-based labour, including cooking. The widening of the workforce, which brought many women out of the kitchen and into the workplace during the 20th century, also contributed. Meanwhile, the growth in insecure and inconsistent working patterns among a growing proportion of the population also discourage meals eaten communally. And an increasing number of people live alone, which certainly does not help. Reports of increasing feelings of loneliness are widespread. The variety of people’s social circles is also decreasing. Declines in volunteering, political participation (beyond voting), fewer people giving to charity, and less time spent informally socialising are all symptoms of this. All this is capitalised upon by the food industry. Solo dining suits commercial interests across the food system, with the rising giants of the food industry keen to communicate a convenience culture around food—eat when you want, wherever you are. As new research shows, power and control over food globally has become so highly concentrated that large, profitoriented multinationals are influential in shaping critical decisions about how our food is produced, traded, and marketed. However, many others point out that this production-focused approach has led to negative effects on people’s livelihoods, cultures, and environments.

Going green the vegetarian teen Serving healthy meals for your family can be a challenge if a family member, particularly a teen, decides to become a vegetarian. To support your teen's food choice, you may need to find new ways to prepare some family meals. Involving your teen in making his or her own meals can help them learn how to cook and prepare a nutritionally balanced meal. Teens need to know there's more to being a vegetarian than simply eliminating meat! And yes – they do need to eat their vegetables! All vegetarians, especially individuals who don't eat any animal products, need to be sure they get enough iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and zinc. Protein needs can easily be satisfied by eating a variety of beans, peas, lentils, soy products, nuts, seeds, as well as milk products and eggs.

tofu made with calcium, broccoli, kale, Bok Choy, almonds or almond butter, and cooked beans (soy, white, navy, black, kidney) and calcium- fortified juice. Vegetarians who don't consume any milk and alternatives including fortified soy beverages can benefit from a calcium and vitamin D supplement. Vitamin B12 - is found in animal foods such as milk and eggs. If animal foods are not consumed, look for foods that are fortified with vitamin B12 vitamin, such as fortified cereals, fortified soy milk, and fortified veggie 'meats', or take a vitamin B12 supplement. Zinc - choose beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Milk, cheese, yogurt, and eggs all provide zinc.

WHAT TO COOK? Nutrients Iron - choose whole grain breads and cereal, dark green leafy vegetables, dried fruit, eggs, beans, lentils, and nuts. To increase absorption of iron from plant foods eat vitamin C rich foods at the same time. For example: have cereal and orange juice for breakfast; add strawberries, kiwi fruit, sweet peppers, or tomatoes to dark leafy greens; make a vegetarian chili with tomatoes and beans. Calcium and vitamin D - consume at least 2 cups of milk or fortified soy beverages each day. Some non-dairy foods also provide calcium including

Meal suggestions for vegetarian teens. Many of the suggestions below, your teen should be able to prepare for themselves. Spanish supermarkets, such as Mercadona, have recently introduced a number of vegetarian alternatives such as textured soy protein which can be used as a meat substitute in many meals. Mercadona and Lidl also stock vegan sausages, vegan ‘luncheon meat’ and a variety of vegetarian and vegan burgers and escalopes. Aldi also sells tofu burgers in a variety of flavours, all of which are handy for meals on the go but if you have more time it is not difficult to

make vegetarian meals from scratch. • Omelettes or frittatas made with vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, mushroom, sweet peppers, and onions - serve with whole grain bread or toast and a glass of milk or fortified soy milk • Burritos or tacos made with kidney or black beans or refried beans • Stir fries made with tofu, vegetables, and nuts – enjoy with whole wheat couscous or brown rice • Salads made with leafy greens, chick

peas, white or red kidney beans, nuts, vegetables, pasta, rice, couscous or barley • Falafels and hummus made with chick peas served with whole grain pita bread and salad, sweet peppers or carrots • Peanut or almond butter on whole wheat or multigrain bagels with banana or apple slices- with a glass of calcium fortified orange juice • Soups made with lentils, beans, and vegetables – serve with whole grain

bread or crackers • Canned baked beans in tomato sauce with molasses served with toast, vegetables and dip • Casseroles made with beans or lentils, rice, corn, and tomatoes • Pizza topped with vegetables • Vegetarian chilli served with cornbread or couscous • Vegetarian lasagne • Soy milk smoothies with a banana, frozen berries and a splash of orange juice

Traditional Christmas drinks Christmas is the time of year when family and friends gather together to eat, drink, and celebrate. The holiday is marked by traditional meals and beverages that vary around the world. The drinks may be served cold or hot, depending on the hemisphere of the country, but all of them have one thing in common: tradition. Sangria This drink is a popular Christmas beverage all around the world, but especially in Spain. The typical recipe is a mixture of red wine and various fruits that add colour and flavour. Bloody Mary (England) This classic contains vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, salt, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, and pepper. In certain regions of Europe, it is the chosen Christmas drink. Eggnog (United States) This is a traditional American drink that is served throughout the holidays. It is also popular in Canada and the UK. It's a combination of milk, egg, and sugar, served with a pinch of nutmeg. Brandy or rum can also be added. Mulled wine (Germany) This drink is traditional to Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Austria, the Czech

Republic, and Hungary. It is typically consumed during November and December. Various mulling spices are added to the wine and it is served warm. Gløgg (Denmark, Sweden, and Norway) Another hot wine, Gløgg, is consumed in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, and is the strongest of all the mulled wines. It is added to vodka, brandy, or rum, and is often consumed as an after dinner drink to aid in digestion. Hot Toddy (Ireland) Also known as hot whiskey in Ireland, this drink is typically a mixture of liquor, honey, lemon, and hot water. Some recipes include sugar, tea, and spices. Tequila (Mexico) This distilled, alcoholic beverage is made with blue agave. The drink is popular in certain Mexican cities during the festivities. Sujeonggwa (Korea) This traditional Korean punch contains gotgam (dried persimmon), cinnamon, ginger, and pine nuts. It is made as an infusion and consumed cold at Christmas. Limoncello (Italy) This lemon liquor has a base of lemon, alcohol, water, and

sugar. It was created in Italy, but also served in Argentina as an after-dinner drink to aid in digestion. Sparkling wine (France) In several European countries, the tradition is to drink sparkling wine with Christmas dinner. France, Spain, and Italy are some of the countries that honor this tradition. Coquito (Puerto Rico) This is a liquor made with coconut cream, condensed milk, white rum, cinnamon, and vanilla. It is generally served cold with dessert. Caipirinha (Brazil) Caipirinha is a refreshing drink from Brazil. The alcoholic beverage is a muddled combination of cachaça, lime, sugar, and ice.

Spain takes ham to China Shoulders and legs of Spanish ham were finally allowed into China this October. According to María Naranjo, the director of the Food, Wine and Gastronomy department at the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX), it took years of

lobbying by Spain’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Ministry to convince Chinese authorities to give the green light, though ready-sliced ham has been imported since 2007. The process to request permission to export the product began last year during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Spain. By September of this year, the remaining paperwork was completed and the first whole hams, on the bone, were sent to China at the beginning of October. As the minimum

curing period of 313 days has also been reduced, there is the possibility that other products such as pork loin, spicy chorizo sausage and other cold cuts could also be exported, says Naranjo. Spain’s ham shoulders and legs will

debut at the China International Import Export in Shanghai, which was inaugurated recently by Xi himself¬¬ – a big deal for a product being hailed as the “Spanish caviar.” Ham companies Embutidos Fermín and Cinco Jotas are among the first Spanish firms to get a foot in the door of the Chinese market, but there are many waiting to join them, sparking hopes that Spanish gastronomy is about to take off in China. “This is an extraordinary chance to

promote our best products,” says Carlos Tórtola, economic advisor and head of trade at the Spanish embassy in Beijing. “It’s a product that is exclusive to our gastronomy with characteristics that make it gourmet. What’s more, the term ibérico is starting to be associated with quality goods in China, the biggest global market of luxury products.” Indeed, sales of Spanish ham and other pork-based cold cuts in general are on the rise in China. In 2014, €2 million worth of ham was sold, according to the Chinese Customs Department. This year, that figure is expected to rise to €7 million. And with the new legislation, the figure could jump even higher. Embutidos Fermín and Cinco Jotas are among the almost 30 companies now authorised to sell in China. Another 20 are still waiting for the go-ahead. “There is a lot of expectation because

how to store, carve and present the ham. “My distributors tell me that the Chinese like the ham culture they see in Spain; with the ham carved from the bone, and that is what they want,” says Martín. demand might be overwhelming,” says Santiago Martín, the owner of Embutidos Fermín. Although ham in China is still a luxury product, the market has the potential to grow. Miguel González, the joint owner of family company Castro y González, says China is already their main export market. With the new regulation, they expect to double the 1,500 bone-in hams they sell now within the space of two to three years. Meanwhile, Santiago Martín expects to increase his €12 million turnover by 20% next year thanks to exports to China. “I have just sent a container filled with hams,” he says. “In the 12 years I have been exporting to China, I have never been able to fill one.” In fact, such are the expectations that together with his distributor in China, González is already starting to develop projects to train Chinese catering staff

A luxury product Until now, most of the demand in China has come from restaurants, hotels, luxury supermarkets and online platforms specialising in delicacies, says Tórtola, while González describes the typical consumer as someone from either Beijing or Shanghai, “from the middle to upper classes, open-minded and well-informed.” Because of this target market, Tórtola dismisses the possibility of imitation brands. Not only is the Chinese consumer increasingly well-informed, he says, but the Chinese authorities are committed to protecting intellectual property rights and are aware of the health risks of imitation food products. As far as the price is concerned, many think Spanish ham is expensive and although a lot of people have tasted it is not an item that will be added to the weekly shopping list.

What happens if you cut food groups Dieticians have revealed what happens when you give up important food groups including seafood and red meat to follow a trendy 'elimination diet' like Paleo or gluten-free. If you give up dairy, red meat, seafood or poultry, you can expect there to be serious health effects for your body - and these vary from acne to brittle bones and weakened immunity. If you cut something from your diet, you need to replace the banned food with something else to ensure you're not missing out on something the body really needs to keep it healthy long term. Dairy More people than ever have ditched traditional cow's milk and dairy in favour of soy, oat, almond and other alternative varieties. But experts warn that giving up milk and other dairy foods doesn't only mean you're denying your body vital calcium content, but other important nutrients such as magnesium, vitamin B12, phosphorous, protein, vitamin D and vitamin A too. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to liver and kidney failure and heart disease, while a lack of magnesium can lead to osteoporosis. As dairy is such a rich natural source of calcium, it is very difficult for adults to get the 800-1000mg of calcium they need each day for healthy bones without any dairy in the die. Nut milks and soy products can be fortified with calcium, but it's rarely enough for the required daily amount. A lack of calcium can mean you get brittle bones in later years, by which time Susie said there is little you can do about it.

If you do want to ditch dairy altogether, dieticians explain you must make sure you are choosing 'nut or grain-based milks that are fortified with calcium'. Alternatively, take a calcium supplement to make sure you get the 800-1000mg of calcium you need each day. Ditching dairy can lead to: Brittle bones and osteoporosis. Alternative sources: Nut or grain-based milks that are fortified with calcium or a calcium supplement. Red Meat There could be any number of reasons why you choose not to include red meat in your diet, but doing so means you are eliminating one of the 'richest natural sources of iron'. While white meat, eggs, wholegrains

and leafy greens do contain some iron, the reality is that this iron is relatively poorly absorbed compared to that found in red meat. Low iron levels are relatively common for women with up to 25 per cent of us battling it. She said low iron can lead to feelings of fatigue, breathlessness and low immunity.

While vegetarians adapt over time and become more efficient at absorbing their iron from plant foods, it tends to be those who consume red meat occasionally who are at higher risk of developing iron deficiency, as their body is used to absorbing iron from animal sources. If you do ditch red meat, dietician say you need to look for iron-rich foods in every meal and snack, so you get the required daily amount of 18mg each day. Good examples of iron-rich foods that aren't meat include tofu, tempeh, lentils, Brazil nuts, cashews, spinach, potatoes and mushrooms. Ditching red meat can lead to: Fatigue, breathlessness and low immunity. Alternative sources: Tofu, tempeh, lentils, Brazil nuts, cashews, spinach, potatoes and mushrooms. Fish and seafood Seafood, including all fish and shellfish, is 'extremely good' for us. High in protein, nutrient-rich and relatively low in calories, she said the two key nutrients you stand to miss out on if you ditch fish are omega 3 fats and zinc. Oily fish including salmon, sardines and fresh tuna are one of the very few natural foods where you can find omega 3, while oysters, mussels and shellfish are packed full of zinc. Zinc is crucial for hormone production, immune function and good skin. If you are lacking in zinc, you might get acne or a weakened immune system. The other less frequently mentioned nutrient we get from our seafood is iodine. This is notoriously low in Australian soil, and low iodine is linked to impaired thyroid functioning long term.

If fish or shellfish aren't your thing, a zinc or omega 3 supplement may be needed. Ditching fish and seafood can lead to: Bad skin, poor hormone production and weakened immune function. Alternative sources: Zinc and omega 3 supplements. White meat and poultry White meat including chicken and turkey is not as nutrient-dense as red meat, but it does contain vital sources of protein, vitamin B6, selenium and vitamin B12 which we all need to function. Selenium is an important mineral and depleted levels can lead to infertility, muscle weakness, hair loss and mental fog.

If your body is very low on vitamin B6, you can get anaemia, which is too few red blood cells - meaning you're tired and weak. If you are still including eggs and/or dairy you will be getting enough of these vitamins and minerals. But it's worth keeping in mind that lean chicken and turkey meat are rich in protein, which if depleted can mean weight loss, muscle weakness, and lethargy. Ditching poultry can lead to: Weight

loss, muscle weakness, and lethargy. Alternative sources: Eggs and/or dairy. Eggs While eggs fall under the dairy category, Susie revealed that eliminating them from your diet has such an effect that they are worthy of their own section. Eggs are an extremely nutritious food containing more than 20 essential vitamins and minerals including good quality protein, good fats and vitamins A and E. You can get many of these vitamins and minerals from other foods, but the one exception is selenium, a 'powerful antioxidant that plays a key role in cell health and is found in very few foods including eggs and Brazil nuts'. A single egg, for example, provides a quarter of your daily selenium requirement. As well as infertility, muscle weakness, hair loss and mental fog, depleted selenium can lead to a weakened immune system. If you are cutting eggs, Susie recommends you still eat poultry and plenty of good fats. Cutting eggs can lead to: A weakened immune system. Alternative sources: Poultry and/or vitamin D supplements.

Your walking speed can tell you how fast you're aging

If your stride has slowed down in your forties, you may be aging faster than you realise. That's the result of a new study, which found that your walking speed at age 45 can be an indicator of your physical and neurological aging. While previous research has already found a link between an older person's gait and their health, the new study specifically looked at hundreds of 45year-olds to get a much deeper sense of what walking speed reveals about aging. How fast people are walking in midlife tells experts a lot about how much their bodies and brains have aged over time. Gait speed seems to be not only an indicator of aging, but also an

indicator of lifelong brain health. In the study, researchers examined more than 40 years of data collected from over 1,000 New Zealanders born between 1972 and 1973. Starting at the age of three, each study participant was assessed by a pediatric neurologist, who measured everything from intelligence and language/motor skills to emotional and behavioural regulation. After that, each had their health regularly assessed and examined and underwent interviews every few years. At the age of 45, researchers measure the gait speed of 904 participants using a simple test. The researchers also looked at how quickly they were aging, based on 19 health markers including

body mass index, blood pressure, and cholesterol level. Additionally, they conducted the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV test, did a brain MRI, and rated facial aging. After analysing the data, they compared those participants with the slowest average gait— around 3.9 feet per second—to people with the highest, averaging at about 5.7 feet per second. The results led researchers to three important conclusions. First, slow gait was associated with “poor physical function at midlife,” according to the study. Despite the fact that most of the midlife subjects walked faster than older adults who were part of the earlier study, researchers made the same associations between walking speed and physical performance that were previously found. Second, researchers determined that slow walking was associated with accelerated aging—which was not only represented through rapid deterioration of organ systems but by facial aging and structural brain changes as well.

Basically, those who walked slower physically aged faster than their speedier peers, and it showed. Third, the research team made a connection between slow gait and worsened neurocognitive functioning. Those who walked faster, had a higher IQ, and a reduced risk of dementia. The link between intelligence and gait proved even stronger: Participants whose neurocognitive functioning was lower at the age of three subsequently had slower gait in their forties. Researchers were able to determine how fast a person would walk at 45 by their intelligence at the age of three. “Gait speed at midlife may be a summary index of lifelong aging with possible origins in childhood central nervous system deficits,” the study pointed out. How to measure your own gait

You don’t need an expert to calculate how many feet per second you can walk. There's a simple equation to figure it out: Choose how many feet you are going to walk. This study opted for six meters, equivalent to about 20 feet. Get a measuring tape and mark the distance with tape or a piece of chalk. Using a stopwatch, determine how many seconds it takes you to walk the distance without exerting yourself. Make sure to walk with your regular pace. Divide the total distance walked by the amount of time (in seconds) on your stopwatch. For example, if it took you five seconds to walk 20 feet your equation would be: 20 feet divided by 5 seconds equals 4 feet per second. To get a totally accurate read, you might want to try repeating the process a few times.

The yesterday and today of varicose veins

T

he era of the big discoveries in medicine passed by without bringing us a cure for many illnesses that affect our everyday life, such as varicose veins. We haven’t achieved a way to cure them or stop them from appearing with a simple pill. But doctors haven’t given up or wasted their time, we have developed a lot and we carry on looking for the best way to cure this illness. At the beginning, we could only count on surgery as an efficient treatment. The varicose veins normally appear on top of accessory surface veins that can be extirpated without creating any problems or aftermath for the circulation. This seemed an effective treatment for the larger veins, but the pass through surgery was aggressive and left various unsightly scars. Also it was impossible to take care of the smaller veins and the capillaries that are inside the skin, for this reason the results were mediocre. To solve these inconveniences, during many years we have practiced many methods to cancel out these ill veins or try to recuperate their original form. All these techniques are grouped under the common name “SCLEROSIS” and treatment can by physical and/or pharmacological. The physical sclerosis treatment consists in injuring mechanically or

heat on the veins which we want to disappear. So that the burns do not affect the tissue around the veins and create scars, technology such as laser and radiofrequency has been used. Its efficiency is very limited due to the difficulty in achieving direct contact with all of the segments of affected veins. Its other inconvenience is the high cost of technological appliances that need to be used, which increases costs in the treatments. In spite of its low efficacy and its high price, its futuristic image still achieves some commercial impact. The pharmacological sclerosis treatment consists in introducing medicine into the ill veins to either recuperate them or to make them disappear. The injected product easily distributes throughout all of the affected routes, however deep or twisted they are, achieving a complete affect. Over the years, the best drugs and methods of application have been selected until achieving the perfect result with minimal complications. Nowadays, the medical science considers this the best treatment for varicose veins, however there are still big methodological differences between different medical teams that vary the perfection and the durability of the results. At QUPA, the treatment is well-

balanced and complete which permits the team to offer patients a guarantee on the ideal result. Why do these Varicose Veins have to happen to me? Normally, dilated veins in the leg are what we call varicose veins. This problem is due to two things: genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Although both are necessary,

the importance of each one changes the type of varicose vein you may have. The big Varicose Veins that take place under the skin, which in medical terms we call “Tronculares”, the genetic factor is the most important. This is the reason why they can appear with the same frequency in men and women. Once they have appeared, their

growth is faster if “treated badly”. One of the main reasons for damage is the heat, because the veins in the venous system are designed to expand when the blood in our body cools down, making them closer to the surface of the skin. Another reason is lack of movement, especially when we are stood up or with our legs straight down, because what impulses our blood up is the contraction of nearby muscles. Anything that makes it difficult for the blood to flow from the legs to the heart will also make them grow, this can happen with many things, like wearing tight trousers, having swollen knees, arthritis, lung illnesses, heart illnesses or abdomen illnesses, however above all, obesity, as it increases the pressure on the abdomen and slows down the blood flow from the legs. However in the smaller varicose veins, especially in the spider veins, the female hormones are fundamental as a cause of the illness. In that aspect this illness is the equivalent to male baldness, (androgenic alopecia, for women) as genetic predisposition and sexual hormones are also needed for this to happen. If we want to prevent this illness, there is little we can do to correct our genetics. With regard to our hormones, we can avoid taking

contraceptives or other hormone treatments for menopause, but we can’t avoid our ovaries from producing naturally hormones. We can also fight against obesity and sedentary lifestyle, although not all physical exercises count, because those which include “jumps” (like running) “fitness” (bodybuilding, spinning, etc.) or “tightening the stomach” (Pilates) are all harmful for varicose veins. Without a doubt, the best for them is swimming. Finally, it is convenient to remember that varicose veins are contagious to nearby veins. This is produced due to a Hydrodynamic principle, known as “Laplace Law”, which says that the more the vein dilates, more is the tension that supports its wall and this makes it easier for it to grow. When widened, the nearby veins are stretched and are dilated as well. For that reason, the best way to prevent them multiplying is to eliminate them. It is important to select a specialised medical team who guarantee a complete and permanent result on all suffering veins. In our clinic we offer that guarantee and also revisions for a year, with closed budgets, which will avoid later surprises in the final price. See QUPA’s advertisement for details on how to get in touch for more information.

Running for just 10 minutes a week is linked to lower risk of earlier death Going for just a 10 minute jog is linked to a significantly lower risk of earlier death, according to new research. Running - no matter how fast, far or often - brings "substantial" health benefits, an international team of researchers found, after analysing 14 studies involving more than 233,000 people. The group's health was tracked for between 5.5 and 35 years during which time 25,951 people died. When the study data was pooled, any amount of running was associated with a 27 per cent lower risk of death from all causes over the period of study for both sexes, compared to non-runners. And it was linked to a 30 per cent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, as well as a 23 per cent lower risk of death from cancer.

The researchers concluded: "Increased rates of participation in running, regardless of its dose would probably lead to substantial improvements in population health and longevity. Any amount of running, even just once a week, is better than no running, but higher doses of running may not necessarily be associated with greater mortality benefits." Once a week Even running just once a week or less frequently, for less than 50 minutes each time, and at a pace lower than six miles (eight km) an hour was linked to significant health benefits. "We found no evidence that mortality benefits increase with greater amounts of running," the research team concluded.

They said that, while vigorous exertion has been linked to sudden cardiac death, the mortality benefit of running outweighs the risk. Doctors should decide on a case-by-case basis whether to prescribe the activity, as it may not be suitable for all populations and is linked to a higher injury risk, the researchers added. The authors cautioned that the study cannot establish cause and that the number of studies was small, with methods varying considerably. Future research should utilise the data held by activity trackers, such as Strava and MapMyRun, to assess running habits and the health benefits, they said. The paper is published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

NASA cracks open a moon rock sample Back in 1972, NASA astronauts Gene Cernan and Jack Schmitt worked a tube into the moon, gathered up rock and soil samples, and brought them back to Earth as part of the Apollo 17 mission. The space agency had the foresight to sock away samples from Apollo missions for later study once technology had advanced. Now's the time for some of these samples to step into the science limelight. NASA researchers opened up sample 73002 as part of the Apollo NextGeneration Sample Analysis (ANGSA) initiative. It will be divided up for study. This is the first of two Apollo 17 samples ANGSA will examine. "Studying these unopened samples may allow scientists to gain insight into the origin of the lunar polar ice deposits, as well as other potential resources for future exploration," said NASA in a release on Wednesday.

NASA shared an image showing an Xray computed microtomography scan of sample 73002 in 2019 compared with an X-ray scan from 1974. The clarity of the 2019 version shows how far imaging technology has come. "The analysis of these samples will maximize the science return from Apollo, as well as enable a new generation of scientists and curators to refine their techniques and help prepare future explorers for lunar missions anticipated in the 2020s and beyond," said ANGSA program scientist Sarah Noble. NASA hopes Earth's stash of moon samples will soon be expanded with the help of its Artemis program. The agency plans to send humans back to the lunar surface by 2024. That's a tight timeline, but scientists would love to have more of the moon to examine sooner rather than later.

Robots are already outperforming humans at entrylevel tasks With each passing year, parents are getting more worried about how their children will fare once it’s time to take that step from school to the workforce. They have good reason to fret. The cost of college is being hotly debated. But it’s only one aspect of an even bigger issue: The automation of many entrylevel roles will make it even harder for young people to gain traction in the working world. The road from education to employment is full of more disconnects than ever. Research from the McKinsey Global Institute finds that workers from ages 18 to 34 hold almost 40 percent—or 14.7 million— of the US jobs that could disappear due to automation in the next decade. This creates a challenge for young people, both for those trying to make a living in the service sector and for college graduates aiming to get onto the professional track. Workers aged 18 to 34 hold almost 40 percent—or 14.7 million—of the US jobs that could disappear due to automation in the next decade. Twothirds of the job losses for young people could occur in food, hospitality, or retail. These industries provide a crucial opportunity for more than 30 million Americans overall to bring

home a paycheck—and workers under 34 years old make up half or more of the nation’s wait staff, hotel receptionists, and fast food workers. These types of roles build valuable soft skills like communication, punctuality, and customer service, and they also provide that all-important first line on a resume that can propel people onward and upward. The gig economy has created some alternative options such as driving and delivery, but those types of on-demand services are scarce outside of urban areas. One-third of the automation-related job losses for young people could occur in white-collar jobs, including entry-level roles in accounting, finance, human resources, and administration. In the legal profession, for example, AI can handle document review and case law search—not a favourite task for junior lawyers, perhaps, but one that provides valuable immersion and learning. Actuaries have traditionally spent their early years crunching numbers to assess risk. Now AI is outperforming humans at these tasks. This means aspiring young professionals will need to enter the labour force in higher-level roles. But employers have been saying for years

that too many new hires, even those with college degrees, are not workready. The jobs of the future will demand even more in the way of digital skills, people skills, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. Companies can help to address this issue by offering more paid internships and apprenticeships to prepare students to hit the ground running after graduation. The apprenticeship model, traditionally associated with skilled trades, is now being adopted by a wider range of companies. As technology changes, we need to change apace. The education system has not evolved as quickly as the new world of work. It is not equipping students enough of the technical skills nor the soft skills they will need in the workforce. And there are few road maps available for the majority of young people who are not headed to college. Back to high school A systematic solution could be to expand student access to a wider range of post-secondary education and training programs, or blended schools that combine high school diplomas with associates degrees.

Advancing Speed Best Before… Detection

The DGT has already invested heavily in the latest technology to capture those motorists who risk their own and the safety of others, with the likes of Pegasus on helicopters, drones, and smart cameras by the roadside which can monitor traffic in both directions, but the technology is continuing to advance, and with it comes a greater commitment from the traffic department to make the roads as safe as possible on the “road to zero” fatalities. When Madrid played host to the International Exhibition of Safe and Sustainable Mobility, one piece of newly developed equipment prompted great interest.TruCam II, which was presented by the company Tradesegur, is the most advanced handheld speed detection device on the market so far. The device can detect the speed of a vehicle at a distance of 1,200 metres, which is slightly further than Pegasus, but it can be adapted to detect a speeding vehicle 1.5 kilometres away from the user.

The powerful laser sampling system of the new radar allows the user to record up to three speed measurements per second, approximately one photograph every 0.33 seconds, and can detect a vehicle travelling at up to 320 kilometres per hour, with a margin of error of just 2kilometres per hour. Much like the new cameras which have appeared along the N-332, and many other locations beside, the handheld units can be used to monitor traffic across multiple lanes and in both directions, whilst the enforcement officer using it is at a distance that the driver would not even realise they were there, and with no need to stop a vehicle, as sanctions can be delivered through the post, it is only the most risky of offenders who would be stopped at the roadside. We can see how versatile the device is, operational both day and night and in some of the most high risk areas, it seems to be the ultimate tool for speed enforcement, although as yet they are not in use in Spain, it looks like only a matter of time before this latest detector is added to the arsenal of weapons against speeding motorists. We are used to seeing “sell by” and “best before by” dates on our groceries, but did you know that there are parts of the car that also have an expiration, or best before date? The difference with car parts is that they wear over time and usage, and so there isn´t always a specific timeframe to work to, but we do know that some of the elements will need replacing sooner than others. You are probably used to the idea of an oil change, but there are other elements too. Our cars need regular servicing, which usually means liquids and filters, changing the engine oil and oil filter every 15,000 km; air filter every 20,000 - 30,000 km; fuel filter every 30,000 - 50,000 km; cabin filter every 15,000 km; brake fluid every 20,000 km or 2 years; and antifreeze every 2 years. Okay, your head might be spinning already, but most of these changes will be dealt with, or at least should be, by qualified mechanics at your local

workshop, so they are really more of an awareness of what to expect and when, then there are the major parts you should monitor. Air conditioning If you notice an unpleasant odour or if your car doesn´t cool down, or heat up at this time of year, then it may be time to get the air conditioning checked. A tuning every two years is essential (especially if your vehicle is already a little older), changing the gas and checking the system for leaks, and replacing the cabin filter, as we mentioned, annually. Wiper blades One you know what you are doing replacing the wiper blades is a relatively simple task, and it is essential that they clean the main part of the windscreen without leaving streaks, and without grinding on the glass. Battery Although the car´s battery receives a charge once the engine is running, over time they do start to fail. The

recommendation is to change your battery every 4 or 5 years in order to avoid the car failing to start on the most important morning of your life, which is what usually seems to happen. Catalyst The catalyst change is a specialist job, but it is required approximately every 40,000 kilometres. Airbag The airbag is designed to last for the life of the vehicle, so long as it isn´t used of course, but they must be checked, especially if your vehicle is 10 to 15 years old. Seat belts Again, they are designed to last the life of the vehicle but they can become worn in time and the mechanism can fail, so it is important to have these checked frequently on older models. Lights We have spoken many times before about the importance of checking all the lights on a regular basis. However, the lights tend to last 2 to 3 years, on average, so you can plan ahead whilst still checking on a regular basis. Tyres Again, we have spoken at length about tyres and the importance of checking them, ensuring equal wear and that there is a minimum tread of 1.6 mm. If you plan ahead for when your vehicle might need a little extra care, then it helps to avoid nasty shocks when you take it for a service. These elements do fail, and they are important to replace, so don´t complain to your mechanic or garage if the quote is a little higher than expected if you haven´t factored these replacements into your running costs, otherwise you will be ready for anything, as will your car be.

Look Out for Pedestrians Pedestrians are obliged by law to use the pavement or pedestrianised walkways, but when there is no pavement, then there are times they are forced onto the road. There are a few exceptions to the rule regarding the use of the pavement, such as in the case of a person carrying a bulky object or pushing a small vehicle that does not have an engine. If their movement may hinder other pedestrians then they may use the hard shoulder, or the road if there isn´t a hard shoulder. As a pedestrian you should also travel on the right-hand side of the pavement, in relation to your movement, and should not stop in such a way that it may hinder

other pedestrians, unless it is inevitable in order to cross a pedestrian crossing or board a vehicle. If there is no pavement available, such as on country roads for example, you should walk on the left-hand side (where possible), as far left as you can, so as you are facing oncoming traffic. You should also wear something that provides greater visibility to oncoming vehicles. This is mandatory during the time from dusk to dawn and in poor visibility but is always advisable. A pedestrian group led by a person or forming a procession and a wheelchair user, with or without a motor, may also use the hard shoulder or road, but at

walking pace. As a large group of pedestrians, you should walk on the righthand side, as if you are a vehicle, and should carry a white light at the front and a red light at the rear of your group during times of poor visibility. When vehicles come across pedestrians on the road it is crucial to give them enough lateral distance when overtaking. This should be at least 1.5 metres, the same as if you were overtaking a cyclist. The draft from a passing vehicle could pull a pedestrian into the road and cause significant risk to their safety, so always pass giving as much space as possible, and as slowly as the traffic movement will allow.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

For those that are wondering, it’ll be the 23rd February I reckon. Yeah, Feb 23rd. The date I stop moaning about the current inconsistent use of VAR or V-AR or whatever we supposed to call this farce that is blighting football more readily than the tactical foul.

decisions?” I’ll tell you what they will discuss in the pub - all the decisions they still manage to get wrong even though they get to watch it back 46 times on video. Of course, we are starting at Anfield where, seconds before City failed to clear the ball properly and Fabinho larrupped the plastic off the ball, Pep was apoplectic that handball hadn’t been given against Trent AlexanderArnold. Don’t worry, Peppy G. This is the exact situation where VAR can come into its own. I’d go as far as saying getting this one right, disallowing the goal and giving Aguero a chance to score his first at the home of Liverpool

doo again had the man with the screen not finally deduced that John Lundstrom’s toe-nail was offside in London. Don’t worry about the fact that Spurs had failed to clear the ball properly from the cross, a touch was taken, the ball came back in then the goal was scored - oh, no. Let’s wind the tape back and find a reason to disallow it. And better still, let’s take nearly five minutes to do it. They tried to find a way of chalking off United’s equaliser too, but they were (reluctantly) allowed to claim that one. Spurs should probably consider just playing in Europe this season. They were very good in Belgrade and they were terrible back in the Premier League. VAR

Do you remember those heady days when anti-VAR campaigners said, “but what will people discuss in the pub after the game if we let video make all the

would be the turning point in the history of video technology in the English game. What’s that? The video ref was getting a coffee? It’s a goal? The thing is, I am not saying it is a clear and obvious error. I am not saying Trent meant it. I am not even saying that I would have given it. My point is, some of them get given and some of them do not get given - even in this alleged age of VAR will solve all refereeing errors that are ever made. Will they balls. You’ve got refs either too keen to overturn the decisions made by their mate on the pitch or too scared to overturn the decisions made by their mate on the pitch. But it’s OK though - they are getting pretty damn good at picking up those big toes that are offside, right?

were when they won the title. Jamie Vardy and James Maddison are doing for them what Dele Alli and Harry Kane used to do for Spurs (and England), so maybe Gareth Southgate might want to consider sending Rebekah a DM on Insta? There was, of course, the obligatory VAR boo-boo but seeing that Leicester won and it didn’t affect the result I’ll let that one slide. There’s something brewing at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard’s Chelsea march on, remaining patient and finally working out how to break down Crystal Palace’s stubborn rear-guard. Naturally, it was Tammy Abraham who scored again. And he was joined on the scoresheet by Christian Pulisic, again. Pulisic joined illustrious names like Roy Wegerle, Joe-Max Moore and Clint Dempsey for scoring in three consecutive Premier League matches. I know, who on earth was Joe-Max

Talking of Arsenal, who said Unai Emery isn’t a tactical genius? It takes a brave man to experiment with Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at wing-backs when you go to the King Power. And, credit to the boys, eh Unai? They showed a good attitude and stuck to your gameplan, didn’t they?

Moore? On this form, you can book Chelsea in for one of the top-four spots. One team that, hilariously, dreamed of challenging for the Premier League top six this season was West Ham United. The thing is, they didn’t expect Fabianski to

Back to VAR. If Chris Wilder thinks it is rubbish, who am I to disagree? Spurs would have been right back in the doo-

OK - they needed a huge deflection and a scrambled own-goal to get a foot in the game and Marcus Rashford really should have had four, but it’s progress. Rashford managed to score the most difficult chance he had, before inexplicably missing from two-yards in a way Raheem Sterling was in danger of becoming famous for. But, it was three goals in a game for United at Old Trafford

for the first time since they battered Chelsea and it was a welcome three points for anyone who doesn’t want to see Ole cry on TV. Weirdly, beating Southampton might have helped Everton in the short-term but has certainly not helped them in the long-term. Three points at St Mary’s guarantees Marco Silva will be in charge come the New Year whereas defeat would have probably seen them get shot. Now it looks like the wrong manager is going to get sacked as Ralph Hasenhuttl looks like he’d be better off yodelling back in the Alps to get his mojo back. Richarlison managed to stay on his feet long enough to score the winner. I’ll admit, I didn’t see Wolves beat Aston Villa but I did hear that the Villa left Ruben Neves unmarked from distance and he fired one home - well, if you’re going to let that happen you don’t deserve to win. It’s not as if he tries to do it every single week (and achieves it once in a while, too).

12 minutes in Liverpool? Two shots. Two goals. Would Ederson have saved both? You know what, he might have done. That third one from Mane? Even Kyle Walker would have kept that out.

It’s November though folks, this title isn’t over yet. Liverpool have thrown it away far nearer the line than this.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can head into the international break with a little twinkle back in those very jaded eyes. Manchester United find themselves back where they belong - in the top half of the Premier League. They were better than Brighton in all departments and there was no guarantee that was going to be the case.

had more of a defensive impact on the match than Eric Dier and probably costs less to run each week. People are talking about how Arsenal and Manchester United are way off the Champions League places this season, but if Tottenham don’t get the heads out of places where the sun doesn’t shine then they could find themselves playing Thursday night football next season.

City had to call on Claudio Bravo who just about got the nod over Kyle Walker to replace the injured Ederson. The problem is, about 18 months ago when Bravo was getting a game the narrative was that although he was OK with his feet, he was bobbins at saving shots with his hands and quite a lot got past him.

When Pep was screaming ‘TWO HANDS, TWO HANDS!!’ at anyone that would listen you had to wonder if he was talking about his goalkeeper and not the fact he believed City had deserved two penalties.

deserve to be and probably where they will ever be given how badly the club has been run over the years - 18 months of Pellegrini isn’t to blame. Mind you, Unai Emery might be available soon.

Emery is a deadman walking, Jose is hovering - just when you thought Arsenal couldn’t become any more of a mess. Unai has, understandably, called for calm - which sounded to me like he wants someone to make a rational decision and put him out of his misery. As for Leicester, they are currently one point better off at this point than they

get injured and have to pick that lump Roberto in goal - why didn’t they just retain Adrian? The ‘keeper’ summed up West Ham’s current form far better than Declan Rice did, by punching a corner into his own net. There are obvious calls for Manuel Pellegrini to be sacked now, but why? West Ham are probably where they

Is it about time Steve Bruce started getting some credit? Newcastle won again and it was the most entertaining match at St James’ Park since the days of Kevin Keegan (the first time, definitely not the second time). If they keep this up, someone might have to admit that Mike Ashley got it right (again). Norwich City update: definitely going to get relegated, possibly by Valentine’s Day.

Bogey’s Shield Round 1 The first medal round of the SMGS 2019/20 season, played as part of the year’s Bogey’s Shield competition, saw an excellent turnout of 40 members and 8 guests. The last time we were here in September DANA was approaching, with the following 2 days having some terrible consequences for a number of members, especially those with their homes in the Vega Baja area. Nearly two months later some still have repairs to their housing ongoing. So a day of golf should have come as a nice form of relief for many. And it

probably was. But for most the windy conditions, well set back tees and, unfortunately again, slow play, meant that it became something of a hardship. Of course sixteen holes with water doesn’t help, but the up to 30km/hr wind which switched directions during the round was the main cause of grief. Bronze category players in particular suffered. Only 13 players beat a nett 80, the star return of the day being posted by Theo Boelhouwer with a nett 69, the only person to beat their handicap. And a special mention for Kev Allbright. And what a dreadful day it was with a howling gale and the water was hitting Neil and my foot plates sending it swilerkin down our wellies making it very wet and uncomfortable. The weights came from the opposite side from the week before with Bill Reade taking the top spot with 19.380kgs in second place was Ian Brown with 12.080kgs and coming in third was Dave Hutchinson with 11.360kgs. 1st Bill Reade with 19.380kgs 2nd Ian Brown with 12.080kgs 3rd Dave Hutchinson with 11.360kgs All fishing the feeder using pellet On Monday Ron Salisbury and myself spent a couple of hours at Pedrera, cutting back the shrub growth on the road, to help stop the cars getting scratched and damaged travelling down to the water.

Imanyo Golf Society “Remembrance Day Cup” Font Del Llop Imanyo’s golf society have been supporting the Royal British Legion for the past four years, this is the first time we played for the Remembrance Day Cup sponsored by Mick the Grip and the Royal British Legion. We were a bit short on players this year due to illness etc. but we still managed 16 which met at Imanyo’s for the traditional English breakfast. The format was singles full handicap Stableford, for those in the UK the weather was sunshine and a pleasant 70 degrees with a light breeze in the morning but most players were still in shorts.

Winner of the Remembrance Day Cup from group A was Tom Goulden with 39 points, runner up was “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 32 points, winner of group B was “The Joker” Mick Billins with 35 points, runner up on count back from “Nine Iron” Mo Chaplin was Graham Rumsey with 33 point. Nearest the pins winners were hole 3 “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 7 in two shots Alec Aspden, hole 8 Simon Dakers, hole 12 no winner, hole 16 “Nine Iron” Mo Chaplin and hole 17 Tom Goulden. The presentation was held back at Imanyo’s bar, thank you to

Monday’s ‘counter game’ was the version where the number of scores to count was known before each hole was played. Making her debut appearance as a guest, Lauraine Walker found herself in the winning team alongside John Shervell, Paul Brown and the fictional Albert. Of their total 94 points Paul contributed 36 of them! Second spot went to Pat Cassidy, John Dobsson, Mike Chapman and Annemarie Weisheit with a total of 92 points. Thanks to ‘Mick the Grip’ who was on hand to say a few words on behalf of The Royal British

was Liz Robertson who was closest in two. Friday’s ‘Bowmaker’ (which is the best 3 scores out of 4 to count) was won by Paul Brown, Olga Douglas, Nigel Price and Graham Murray. With 111 points they beat Bryan Neal, Nora Betts, John Dobson and ‘Albert’ on countback! A certain Henry Beard is responsible for this week’s quote; ‘Play it as it lies’ is one of the fundamental dictates of golf. The other is ‘Wear it if it clashes’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Antonio, Norma and all the staff for looking after us, all money raised on the day was in aid of the Poppy Appeal for the Royal British Legion, the football card was won by Ian Newton with Bolton raising €40, players were fined for lost balls which raised €45, our table top raffle raised €205 and our Knit and Natter group raised approximately €60 by crocheting poppy brooches which we sold, so a fantastic total of €350 and the charity tin for the poppy’s sold in the bar still has to be counted. www.imanyogolfsociety.com imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com
