More help than ever needed From the first day HELP Vega Baja has been working to support people affected by the floods and that support is not only continuing, but the people affected and those helping them need the help of the

local community more than ever. Initially, volunteers from Help Vega Baja filled 11 trolleys with food and cleaning materials to be distributed via Alimentos Solidarios, the organisation that was chosen to support all areas of Vega Baja. This donation was quickly followed by more than 30 mattresses

purchased for people staying in community venues such as church halls and schools etc. Soon after this the charity received requests to support various fundraising events in aid of those affected by the floods. This began the Costa Blanca People’s Villamartin fundraising

extravaganza which raised in excess of €20,000, many bars, businesses and restaurants followed suit holding events with their customers raising around a further €6000. The Elective committee of Help Vega Baja took the decision to more than double this fund and increased total fund by a further €30,000. And this was just the start of the hard work. Continued from front page Requests for help poured into the charity’s head office in San Miguel de Salinas from people facing the worst of situations and not knowing where to turn for help. Various items were purchased by the charity to enable people to return to their homes, advice was provided regarding grants available and items needed collected and offered out as the charity became aware of people’s individual needs. Help Vega Baja is fully aware and conscious at all times that it is vital for funds to reach the people in most need. The charity’s team of selfless volunteers have visited areas of Orihuela where they met families whose homes were completely devastated and support was then provided allowing several families to return to their homes. Still in need Two months on and many people now talk about the terrible floods that affected the Vega Baja area. Sadly, many people do not realise that many families are still in a terrible situation not only living in homes that need a tremendous amount of work but also facing health issues with many people suffering continuous infections. At a recent expo event in Torrevieja, the president of the charity, Michele Masson, met with Costa Blanca People’s Jenny Grogan who was keen to highlight the situation in a village near Almoradí called El Saladar. Following this conversation, volunteers from Help Vega Baja arranged to meet with local resident, Sammy, who together with a team of volunteers had for the past nine weeks been working day and night to bring the homes of neighbours and friends back to some semblance of “normality”. The charity’s volunteers saw the destruction to homes and how people were doing

everything they could with the resources they had and knew they desperately needed help. Help Vega Baja decided that it would focus its efforts not only on those individuals who continue to contact the charity for help but to also pull together a team to try to enable the people in El Saladar to have a safe and warm home with the essentials they need. A warehouse has been rented and Help Vega Baja has issued a plea for items of furniture, such as beds, wardrobes, working domestic appliances and anything that is in good condition that will help to replace what has been lost. Michele Masson, said: “The situation in El Saladar is devastating. To see how people are trying to get through each day is humbling and heart-breaking. They are helping each other but they can’t do it all on their own. Although they have done incredible work, they now are reaching the point where, particularly with the winter months upon us, they need to ensure that their homes are dried out, warm and safe. Many kitchens have been totally destroyed and we would particularly like to hear from any kitchen fitters who perhaps have kitchens that are being removed from homes that are still of a reasonable quality that could be refitted into these homes. Bathroom furniture, sofas, beds, washing machines, cookers – all the things that we take for granted have been destroyed and there are families who are living in one room where they are cooking, washing and sleeping. “Now we have the warehouse, we have nominated one of our volunteers, Sue, to co-ordinate the deliveries and distribution of items stored there. We have the charity van but this is not big. We have received support from MUNA in

La Marina who have offered a van and we would be pleased to hear from anyone who would be able to spare some time to help us in any capacity at all. And...an additional van would of course always be most welcome. Anyone with carpentry skills or simply DIY enthusiasts would also be extremely appreciated.” The neighbours of El Saladar have set up a ‘Go Fund Me’ page for donations and HELP Vega Baja has a pay pal account and other methods where people can donate funds. Full details can be found on the charity’s web site at www.helpvegabaja.com For more information of how you can help the flood victims or any other aspect of the support offered to the community by HELP Vega Baja, please contact the charity’s San Miguel Centre on 966 723 733 email: office@helpvegabaja.com or see the facebook page. Christmas Jumper Day With help still desperately needed in the run up to Christmas, the Costa Blanca People is encouraging local businesses, clubs and groups to take part in a festive fundraiser – Christmas Jumper Day. Friday 13th December is set to be more Christmassy than Christmas itself as businesses and groups of friends across the southern Costa Blanca don their best Christmas Jumper in the name of charity. The Costa Blanca People and Kosta Kitchens are encouraging everyone to join in the fun – and all you need to do is get your Christmas Jumper on! Work is so much more fun when you’re wearing a Christmas Jumper – or even a pair of silly reindeer antlers, so get your colleagues (and your boss!) on board. The campaign is not only for people in the workplace – if you have a group of friends, a club or a charity, you are also most welcome to

take part! If you don’t have a Christmas Jumper already, don’t worry! You can decorate an ordinary jumper, or borrow one from a friend. What’s important is that together, we have the chance to raise money for families in need this Christmas! We suggest a minimum donation of €2 per person but obviously, the more you can give the more it will help. Decide how much you want to ask colleagues and clients to donate. Ask family and friends for sponsorship. If you like, you can turn it into an event or party for clients and provide mince pies and a glass of mulled wine. How much you do is up to you but the idea is to raise as much money on the day as you can.

Many families are still getting back on their feet, having lost everything in the floods. With this fundraiser, we want to be able to give these families a boost. The donations will be shared among families most in need and will be used towards Christmas – whether that is help towards covering the cost of Christmas dinner or gifts for the children. We have enlisted the help of the charity Help Vega Baja who will distribute donations among the families most in need this Christmas. Let us know that you are committed to taking part. Funds raised on the day can be brought to the Costa Blanca People, Kosta Kitchens or other selected outlets (to be confirmed) on Monday 16th December

BITE SIZE Police shoot at stolen NEWS: car in Torrevieja

As the next meeting of Torrevieja West Neighbourhood Watch & Residents group at 4.30 on the 25th November at Casa Ventura is the final meeting for this year there will be mince pies, a free raffle and music from the Enthusiastical Community Choir.

Food bank collection The annual collection of food to replenish the food banks is set to take place on the 22nd and 23rd November. Most local supermarkets including the likes of Mercadona participate in the event. Volunteers greet customers at the door, offering collection bags as well as a list of the food items most needed.

Police officers were forced to shoot out the wheels of a car in Torrevieja as it attempted to escape a routine checkpoint. The dramatic incident took place on Monday last when Policia Local resorted to shooting the car’s tyres after the driver tried to run over an officer while escaping a checkpoint. The woman behind the wheel was eventually arrested for an attack on a police officer - although she could be accused of attempted homicide, driving without a license, without insurance and in an allegedly stolen vehicle. The Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil is investigating the events that occurred at the checkpoint on Avenida Desiderio Rodríguez. The checkpoint was manned by the GRO (Operational Reinforcement Group) of the local police. GRO officers are authorised by the General Directorate of Traffic to carry out routine checks of ITV validity and vehicle insurance details. A car driven by a middle-aged woman, and in which another woman was travelling in the front seat, stopped about a hundred

meters from the control, which aroused suspicion. Two armed officers of the Local Police approached her and asked him why she had stopped. Without a word, she turned the car and tried to run over one of the officers who then shot at the wheel of the car in an apparent attempt to avoid being run over. The attempt to stop the car was unsuccessful. The vehicle continued and a chase ensued with Local Police and Guardia Civil in pursuit. Two GRO vehicles intercepted the car just as the driver was about to join the N-332. An officer once again approached the car but the driver, again tried to run him over and drive away. Another officer took aim and this time successfully shot out the car’s tyre and forced the vehicle to stop so that the driver could be arrested. The use of firearms by law enforcement officials is very restricted by Spanish legislation and first investigations indicate that the officers in question were correct in the manner in which they discharged their weapons.

Prosecutor demands 58 years for Black Widow pair The Prosecutor's Office has asked for 58 years in jail for the two accused of the "black widow" murder last year. The pair are accused of the murder of José Luis Sánchez in 2018. The victim’s wife, María Concepción M.V. has been dubbed the Black Widow of Alicante after it is alleged she and her boyfriend, Francisco P.O. married in Sax in summer 2018 and two weeks later, committed the murder. Prosecutors have also demanded that the defendants pay €50,000 each to the victim’s three children. The murder took place in late August in a hotel car park the town of Albufereta. Prosecutors claim that the murder was premeditated, saying that the two defendants made an appointment with the victim with “the ultimate intention of ending his life that night.” The Black Widow, Conchi as she is known, had been using a wheelchair for a number of months in a move which the prosecution claims was “feigning immobility she didn’t really suffer”. To successfully commit the crime and prevent them from seeing them, the defendants wore "dark clothes and caps on their heads and also rubber

gloves worn by electricians." The excuse that the defendants gave to justify their clothing was that they were going to put some flowers where the ashes of a deceased daughter of Conchi were scattered. They claimed they would have to jump a fence and didn’t want to be seen. According to the prosecutor, the victim arrived at the car park at around 10.05 pm. The defendants pounced on José Luis with the intention of killing him. It was a surprise attack in which they took advantage of the "obvious confidence" that José Luis had in his wife and her friend. This prevented "any possibility of defence" and the surprise was increased by the

fact that Conchi was not in her wheelchair. They pushed the victim between two cars and both simultaneously attacked him with screwdrivers and a knife until he was dead. The forensic report includes more than 20 puncture wounds, but the knife wound to his jugular proved to be the injury that caused his death. The Public Prosecutor's Office has submitted its provisional brief to the court and will soon meet with the children of the victim who will make a formal request for conviction. The defence will hold a hearing later and eventually, the trial will begin before a jury.

Ceuta border A van with 52 people on board rammed a fence at full speed at the Ceuta border on Monday morning. The vehicle broke through the border crossing with 34 men, 16 women and two children aged six years and five months on board. Four of the people on board had to be brought to hospital to be treated for their injures, said the Red Cross. The border crossing took place in the early hours of Monday morning and was marked by adverse weather conditions – strong winds and heavy rain. The white van approached the metal gates which mark the border at full speed and managed to break through. After the impact, many of the passengers made a run for it hoping to get to the coastal town of Almadraba to

Two injured in Torrevieja crash A pedestrian and a motorcyclist had to be taken to hospital on Sunday evening following a crash on the CV905. The incident took place at around 8.15pm when the motorcycle collided with two pedestrians. A 25 year old and a 77 year old were rushed to Torrevieja hospital for treatment.

Gas bottle price increase The price of a bottle of butane gas breaks the downward trend and from today (Tuesday) rises to €12.74. As published by the Official State Bulletin on Monday, the butane bottle will increase in price by almost 50 cents, the first price increase so far this year. This increase is due to the rise in the international price of raw materials (+ 35.3%), as well as freight rates (+ 5.3%), and the depreciation of the euro against the dollar (0.6%) with respect to the previous two months.

take refuge there. Others stayed at the border, their injuries after the crash making escape impossible. Several patrols of the Guardia Civil were engaged and managed to arrest the driver of the vehicle, a Moroccan resident in France, who will be charged with a crime against the rights of foreign citizens. The remainder of the passengers were taken to police headquarters to be identified before being brought to CETI, the Temporary Immigrant Stay Centre. A spokesperson for the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) told the press that the people had been treated by Cruz Roja staff, who determined that they were in good health, except for four who had to be evacuated to the University Hospital.

National Police in Alicante made six arrests this week as part of an operation to break up a criminal gang involved in the falsification of euro notes – especially five euro notes, which were not only circulated in Spain but in other EU countries. Gang members are believed to part of what is considered one of the oldest counterfeit networks in Spain and had circulated false bills in their thousands in Madrid, the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Andalusia and Portugal. This week’s sting operation is the latest in a series with arrests already carried out in Granada and in Huelva where a printing

press was dismantled. Investigations began in 2015 with the detection of a significant increase in counterfeit euro notes, mainly in the province of Alicante. The Police stressed that the investigation process was complex, because five-euro bills are not usually checked because of their relatively low value. As such, there are usually no reports of false five euro notes being detected. During this week’s raid, which was carried out simultaneously at two addresses in Alicante, 526 false five euro notes were seized.

Marina Bar Christmas Fayre It is that time of year again – the very popular Marina Bar Christmas Fayre is almost here. On Saturday 23rd at 2pm, there will be Christmas gifts, decorations, various stalls plus raffle, name the cuddly and for hungry patrons a Christmas lunch at €5.50 as well as other snacks and drinks. This year the event is raising funds for the AFA Alzheimer’s Charity in Torrevieja. Bar owners Rita and Dave Monaghan together with fundraisers David and Lorraine Whitney together with a team of willing volunteers and bar staff are hoping that the Fayre will be as popular as previous years.

Oh! Not forgetting a welcome visit from Santa who will be sparing time to see the kids (and Big Kids too) plus The Phoenix Band playing some well known songs. This family event is sure to be a hit so come along at 2pm and help support this worthwhile charity event. Organisers of the Christmas Fayre are fresh from their Fright Night success. Fright Night took place at the Marina Bar on November 14th and was a truly unique charity event organized by David and Lorraine Whitney in aid of the AFA Alzheimer’s Charity. With swirling smoke,

Thriller dance routine, raffle, and comic entertainment together with a scrumptious two course meal the event went down well with the enthusiastic diners, most of whom had come dressed in horror guises. Prizes awarded to the scariest man and women and a prize quiz and raffle ensured that the evening was 'frighteningly' good. The event raised €200. Thanks must go to Rita and Dave who, together with their brilliant staff, served the hungry crowd with Dave stepping in as a 'werewolf' in a Dracula sketch to supplement actors from The Actors Studio.

New rubbish and recycling bins The Councillor for Street Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, announced on Friday that the City Council of Orihuela has acquired around 1,000 containers for the collection of solid waste and selective collection of paper and cardboard, which are destined for the coast, the city and the districts of Orihuela. The councillor explained that "after the awarding of the two contracts, we need to ensure that there are enough rubbish containers. We especially need new containers after the numerous losses we had during the recent floods when many were damages or lost." Councillor Aparicio added that these new purchases mean the

renewal of almost one third of the stock of containers that the council has. Since 2008, this is the first time that a contract which includes the provision of new rubbish bins has been awarded. Over the coming weeks the department will place 112 ´lateral load’ containers on the streets of the coast. These have a capacity of 3,200 litres and also have improved accessibility. A further 576 containers with rearload design are destined for the city, districts and coast. Thirty-two containers for the selective collection of paper and cardboard will also be placed in the city and districts and 20 containers for the collection for paper and cardboard are

destined for the coast. This contract is divided into four different lots, so that the award for the first 112 containers has been made for 99,074 euros, the second (20 containers) for 16,353 euros, the third (32 containers) for 17,351 euros and the fourth (576 containers ) for 67,256 euros. In total, the Department of Road Cleaning will have 740 new containers "with which we will significantly improve the daily collection service we provide to our resident". The Councillor also gave details about the contract that has already been awarded for the supply of 189 new 50 litre bins for an amount of 15,996 euros.

Orihuela to go bike friendly Two arrests at The Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio and the Councillor for Urban Transportation, José Galiano, has presented the Action Plan for “Orihuela the 100% cyclable City”. The project is part of the Urban Development Strategy Sustainable Integrated (EDUSI), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth, 2014-2020. This strategy is based on promoting a low carbon economy in the area, so its objectives are mainly to promote sustainable urban mobility – such as cycling - and make parts of the city a CO2 free space, so that it becomes a reference for the rest of the municipality” said the Councillor Environment.

The Councillor was joined by the technical editor of the strategy, Carlos Martín, who explained that the lines of action regarding the cycling infrastructure will consist of “expanding and consolidating the segregated and continuous bike lane network; ensure good maintenance and cleaning of the local cycling network; continue to increase the parking offer and promote the creation of a network of services aimed at facilitating bicycle maintenance”. The Councillor of Environment also said that the department intended to present in the coming days a more concrete project on the use of the bicycle in the urban area." As pointed out by the technical editor of this strategy, Carlos Martín, the

bicycle is “a tool for the transformation of urban space and also for social transformation that has repercussions in other areas of the city”. Consequently, he stressed the importance of continuing to promote citizen mobility campaigns that encourage the use of this means of transport and more specifically, in Orihuela, known for its tourist attractions and favourable climate. From the Department of Urban Transportation, Councillor Galiano has stressed the intention of “creating a transport plan that is more sustainable and in which you can provide alternative transport in the city. Making Orihuela 100 percent cycle friendly will improve the environment and ensure that people have more transport alternatives”.

archaeological site Guardia Civil have arrested two people caught scavenging an important archaeological site at Guardamar Castle. Both people have been issued with €6000 fines due to their obvious intention to find and steal objects from the site of the Castle of Guardamar del Segura. Important archaeological research work is being carried out at the site so the complaint was sent to the Ministry of Culture, the agency which handles disciplinary proceedings. The Councillor for Historical Heritage, Pilar Gay, revealed that the event actually occurred a few months ago and that the two people were apprehended with several pieces of pottery, “although

it is unknown if they were from Guardamar or another site.” It was a resident who alerted police to the presence of both individuals inside the archaeological site of the castle “on a Saturday afternoon, even though there were signs prohibiting entry.” Councillor Gay stressed that the action of these “poachers of historical pieces cause serious damage to the sites.” For this reason, the council has requested citizen collaboration to prevent the future plunder of archaeological areas – visitors and residents are asked to inform the police if they notice suspicious activity in or around the archaeological site.

A group spokesperson told the Costa Blanca People, “We are looking for people to join our group, so if you are

Bigastro car park still flooded two months after gota fría La Paz underground car park in Bigastro is still under water, two months after the gota fría caused devastation in the Vega Baja. The issue was brought to light by the town’s PSOE party which criticised the ruling PP party for lack of action. This central, multi-storey car park remains unusable as the lower level is still completely under water. The PSOE claims that “there are numerous complaints from residents” about the situation with the car park as well as “the lack of road cleaning, maintenance and an obvious abandonment in certain areas of the town.” Town Planning Councilor, Antonio Meseguer, responded to complaints, saying that measures have already been taken and that on several occasions water has been pumped out of the car park, but that the high water table does not favour the success of these efforts.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

L

ast week, the pound made slight gains after the Bank of England held interest rates, but the 7-2 voting split which saw two members of the Monetary Policy Committee and downgraded growth forecast weighed on sterling. The numbers offered little solace for the pound this week. Gross domestic product expanded by 0.3% in the third quarter and by 1% over the 12 months to September. Manufacturing production fell 0.4% in September and the broader industrial output was down by 0.3%. The trade deficit for the month was wider than expected. The only number to beat forecast was the 0.6% annual decline in business investment. The rate of unemployment fell to 3.8%, but the number of people in work fell by 58k, the biggest quarterly decline in four years. Vacancies were fewer by 53k in the October quarter than in the same three months last year; a ten-year record fall. And annual wages growth slowed to 3.6%. The 1.5% headline rate of inflation for October had no impact. It appeared that the market was braced for all the numbers and the focus was on the political developments. Nigel Farage’s announcement that the Brexit Party would not contest seats held by the Conservatives gave sterling a boost and the pound added half a euro cent and two thirds of a US cent after polls showed an increased lead for the

Conservative Party over Labour. It may be that as the campaign develops, the political focus will continue to dominate the pound in the currency market. Meanwhile in Europe, the euro was unmoved by Spain’s election – the third in four years and the second in this year alone despite delivering inconclusive results. Of greater concern was the "Update on economic and monetary developments" from the European Central Bank which confirmed "protracted weakness in euro area growth dynamics" and reiterated the bank's readiness "to adjust all of its instruments, as appropriate, to ensure that inflation moves towards its aim". There was some good news; ZEW's indicator of economic sentiment in Germany increased "substantially" to -2.1 in November, a 20.7-point rise. ZEW attributed the improvement to "growing hope that the international economic policy environment will improve in the near future". Germany reported that inflation was unchanged at 1.1% in October, in line with forecast and GDP grew 0.1% in Q3, avoiding a technical recession. Growing optimism in the UK that an end to uncertainty is in sight after the General Election meant that the euro had little to counter any slight gains by the euro and mostly held steady over the week.

Farewell David & Lorraine Thursday 8th November was a sad day for David and Lorraine Whitney when they left Reach Out Shop 2, in Calle Dona Sinforosa, Torrevieja, for the last time, as voluntary managers. The couple have been volunteers for nine years, three spent managing Shop 1 in Calle Bella Antonia and a further six years managing Shop 2. The success of Shop 2 can be attributed to their hard work and dedication and the support of their team of volunteers. David´s artistic talent was not lost on the carefully designed window displays and the many floral arrangements within the shop. He would even put on an

impromptu puppet show for the children. The clothes, all displayed in colour coordination, prompted Spanish customers to call the shop, “La Pequeña Boutique” Apart from managing the Reach Out shop, they have raised large sums of money for the charity with some unique events as well as Christmas Fairs and regular Fashion Shows, always getting great support from Rita and Dave Monaghan of the Marina Bar at Calle de las Rosas, Torreta 2 and their staff. David and Lorraine wish to give thanks to their loyal supporters for their generosity in donating monies and various items for all their

events. David was asked about their plans for the future, he replied, “Our charity work will not stop as we will still be fund raising for the AFA Alzheimers Torrevieja, a cause close to our hearts. So, as one door closes, another opens. We fear the poor and homeless will always be a problem worldwide but we just hope that we have gone some way in helping the problems here in the Torrevieja area” They have indeed gone a long way and I´m sure will continue to do so for their chosen charity. Thank you David and Lorraine – you are inspirational!

Orihuela commemorates World No Alcohol Day The Councillor for Health, José Galiano, has outlined a campaign in collaboration with the Community Prevention Unit in Addictive Behaviors (UPCCA), with the objective of raising awareness about the physical and psychological risks of alcohol consumption. The campaign coincides with World No Alcohol Day, which was marked on 15th November. Last week information points were placed in the Ramón Campoamor Civic

Centre in Orihuela Costa and in the lobby of the María Moliner Municipal Library, bringing the information provided by UPCCA to locals and wider population in general. The Community Prevention Unit for Addictive Behaviours (UPCCA) of Orihuela warned that the consumption of alcoholic beverages is ‘very normalised’ despite posing a huge health risk. Alcohol is responsible for the death of 3-and-a-half million people a

year worldwide, often due to traffic accidents. This is because it is a central nervous system suppressant drug that decreases reflexes and the visual field. This means that people who have been drinking underestimate risk and it increases their reaction times. ” The Councillor for Health concluded that "alcohol can cause numerous health problems such as vomiting, gastritis, digestive tumours, liver cirrhosis, impotence and pancreatitis.”

U3A face the weather for fancy dress fun A very cold and extremely windy Thursday greeted the coach load of hardy travellers from Torrevieja U3A when they travelled up to Benidorm to watch the English Fancy Dress parade. Despite the weather, a good time seemed to be had by all. Although the route and timings of the parade itself were very confusing it is thought that everyone managed to see the majority of the colourful and imaginative displays. There were several quite clever floats provided by local theatres and hotels but the main parade consisted of the thousand or so people strutting their stuff around the roads. The photo shows some of the U3A members who took part - and not a goosbump in sight!

Another traditional Spanish Christmas experience Due to popular demand new dates have been added to the ‘Discover the Real Spain’ festive trip to Madrid. Organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo the range of trips and tour aims to offer expats and holiday-makers the opportunity to explore hidden gems. Begoña has recently been organising trips to Madrid, the country’s iconic capital city and due to their popularity is now offering more dates. This latest trip will take place on 16th, 17th and 18th December and includes a panoramic tour of the city by coach and a guided walking tour. There will also be plenty of time to explore the cultural heritage of this architectural hotspot such as the San Miguel Food Market, The Prado Museum, the beautiful old town or the Bernabeu stadium. However, the real heart of this trip is to see the stunning Christmas Lights of the Spanish capital and experience the shops in all the festive glory. As twinkling lights, Christmas decorations and sparkling window displays transform the city, magic fills the air and Madrileños prepare to celebrate their favourite holiday of the year. From the end of November the city’s streets, buildings and squares twinkle with colourful lights

created by renowned Spanish designers, architects and graphic designers. Last year there were new designs adorning the whole city, from the outskirts to its most popular areas. Skyscraping Christmas trees are placed around the city in places like Puerta del Sol, Plaza San Juan de la Cruz, Plaza España and Plaza de Colón (Calle Génova). Second city In addition, the trip will also visit the beautiful Imperial City of Toledo - which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site - on the 18th December where the group will be given a guided tour by a city native. The city is well known for its mixture of Christian, Arab and Jewish monuments, located within the fascinating walled historic centre. Toledo is also the birthplace and former home of the Spanish painter El Greco. These Spanish cities come alive at Christmas, and you can discover it all with this fully organised trip. Accommodation will be at a quality hotel on the Gran Via and is on a bed and breakfast basis and is priced at just 235. To book you place on the above trip and arrange pick up call Begoña on 622 188 772.

Seagate Wealth Management

¿Pension Pot Too Small? H

ave you previously been told that your pension pot is too small and you just have to accept the terms on the pension company? Many financial advisers are unable to deal with a pension of less than £100,000. However, at Seagate we can deal with pensions from £30,000 upwards to give you control over your pension. We offer a range of pension solutions that give our clients flexibility and control to ensure the best outcome for their pension fund. As your pension is likely to be your second largest asset after your home, this is vitally important. There are many reasons people choose to transfer their pensions, but one of the main reasons is pension provision for a spouse. With a final salary scheme, the loss of a spouse also results in a loss of income, ordinarily 50%. With a pension transfer it is possible to pass on 100% of the fund to provide a spouse pension. Bringing all your historic pensions under one roof makes the administration and investment management much more straightforward. This enables us to monitor and make strategic alterations to your pension fund in order to benefit from opportunities and respond to any potential market downturn. This is when the six monthly review process comes into its own. If your pension pot is between £15,000 and £30,000 we can help you to access the cash and provide alternative investment solutions. At Seagate Wealth Management, we all come to work every day to help Expats make the most of their finances. All of our advisers learnt their trade working for Lloyds bank. This gives them a real understanding of customer service. We deliver UK best practice in Spain and always put our clients’ needs and priorities first. Let there be light Even in Spain, the summer is finally coming to an end. The temperatures are dropping and with the change to winter time, the days are getting shorter and you will have less natural light in your home. That’s just the way it is, but is there anything you can do about it? Well, there is little you can do about the time change and the loss of sunlight, but you can choose the interior layout of your house or apartment in a smart way and change the lighting of your home in order to make it brighter. Change the lighting in every room In adult bedrooms not very high levels are recommended for general lighting, between 50 and 150 lx. However, in the headboards of the beds spotlights with up to 500 lx are recommended, in order to be able to read. In children’s rooms the general lighting should be brighter, about 150 lx, and about 300 lx if there is an area for activities and games. What lighting should you install in the living room? The general lighting can vary between 100 and 300 lx, although if you want to watch television you should reduce it to 50 lx and if you would like to

read, just as in the bedroom, you should use a focal light of 500 lx. Not too much lighting is needed in the bathroom, about 100 lx is enough, except in the mirror area, to shave, make up or comb your hair. We recommend 500 lx. In staircases, corridors and other passageways or areas of little use the ideal is a general lighting of 100 lx. The most advisable thing, before buying light bulbs, is to measure the rooms with a luxmeter and you can buy a luxmeter for as little as 25 euros. If we know the lux necessary to have it well illuminated, you can calculate the required lumens for each room and its surface. General recommendations for a welllit home during winter time Buy a luxmeter and measure your rooms to see if you need more light. Try to paint your walls and ceilings white, it is the only way that light can reflect part of its luminance. If they have dark colours, they will absorb the light and it will be lost. You can also opt for wallpaper with a white background and the motifs you like the most; the objective is to have the

walls reflect the light. If you do renovation work and the regulations allow it, install windows with hidden hinges and a single leaf. If you have a 1 metre wide window, do not install a window with two leaves because the surface of the frame would take away part of the natural light. Install a forged door with glass so that the light flows through your house. If you have a door in your entrance that leads to the kitchen or another dark room, consider installing a large iron door with glass that allows light to pass through. Aside from the fact that it will look beautiful, it will continue to serve as a separation of spaces. Install a translucent sliding door made of glass in the bathrooms. If your bathrooms receive natural light, try to take advantage of it. Floor to ceiling doors are also recommended for letting in the light. Don't stop at 2 meters if your ceiling is 2.40m, let the door go all the way to the top. When you open them, the light that enters through them will be spectacular. In addition, you can install glasses that allow light to enter.

Political agreement Full details of the agreement between the PSOE and Unidas Podemos will not be released for possibly weeks as it is fine-tuned by the parties, however, it will be based upon 10 key points the Unidas Podemos and the PSOE want to use as the foundation for a 'progressive government'. They include strengthening growth and job creation – eliminating the 'temporary contract culture' from the job market and guaranteeing meaningful, quality, stable and well-paid employment; working for regeneration and fighting against corruption, by protecting public services, especially education, with free nursery places guaranteed for all children from birth to age three, plus public healthcare and elderly care, guaranteeing pensions for life and indexlinking them to reflect real living costs, investing in science as a 'vehicle for economic intervention' and improving working conditions in the industry, encouraging talented Spanish emigrants to return, treating residential property as 'a right, not mere merchandise', and controlling the 'expansion of gambling centres'. These cover the first two; number three deals with fighting climate change, protecting biodiversity, and guaranteeing animals are properly treated,

whilst number four focuses on strengthening small and medium-sized businesses and on the self-employed, boosting 'reindustrialisation' and 'the primary sector', increasing digitalisation, and providing the tools for 'creation of wealth, wellbeing and employment'. Five is concerned with 'approving new rights' which

'increase the recognition of human dignity', such as the right to 'die with dignity', euthanasia, protecting diversity, and protecting historic memory. Six 'guarantees culture as a right' and seeks to 'combat the precarious nature of the industry', promote sports as a tool for health and wellbeing, quality of life, and integration, and seven deals with feminist policies: keeping women safe, independent and free, especially in the face of gender violence, closing the gender pay gap, drawing up a labour equality law, ending human trafficking and sexual exploitation, and equal

maternity and paternity leave periods which cannot be transferred between parents. The southern Aragón party Teruel Existe is likely to approve of number eight, which deals with reversing the increasing population decline in rural areas by providing proper modern services; and number 10 covers 'fiscal justice' and 'budget balance', or evaluating and monitoring public spending to 'ensure a solid and lasting welfare State'. Number nine is among the most thorny – guaranteeing 'harmonious coexistence in Catalunya' and 'normalising political life' in the north-eastern region. They will seek to open dialogue with Catalunya's government, seek formulae for 'understanding and meeting of minds', but 'always within the framework of the Spanish Constitution', which does not allow any action which could 'threaten the unity of Spain', such as an independence referendum. Within this, Unidas Podemos and the PSOE have agreed to 'strengthen the autonomouslygoverned regional system' to 'ensure adequate provision of rights and services within their jurisdiction' and 'equality between all Spaniards', a term which is likely to be flexible and include all residents in Spain.

The UK is holding a General Election on 12 December. British citizens who have been abroad for 15 years or less can register as an overseas voter (further information can be found at https://www.gov.uk/votingwhen-abroad). Once registered, you have to renew your registration every year. You will get a reminder when it is time to renew. If you do not renew your registration, you will be removed from the register and must make a fresh application in order to vote again. Government officials have taken steps to help speed up the delivery of postal votes overseas and advise that they are sent back in good time, especially during a period as busy for post in the UK as December is. You can vote from Spain in two ways – by post or by proxy. Overseas voters who are reregistering to vote or newly applying to use a postal vote in the days running up to the deadlines should seriously consider the option of a proxy, as at that stage there will be reduced time needed to send out, complete, and return a postal vote from overseas.

If you want to vote by post in Great Britain, your local Electoral Registration Office must receive your postal vote application by 5pm on 26 November. If you want to vote by proxy in Great Britain, your local Electoral Registration Office must receive your proxy vote application by 5pm on 4 December. You cannot vote by post from abroad if your registered address is in Northern Ireland. If you are registered in Northern Ireland, applications to vote by proxy must be received by 5pm on 21 November by the Electoral Office

for Northern Ireland. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I would encourage all British citizens to register to vote if you are able to and you should consider voting by proxy to ensure your vote is counted.” UK Nationals can vote and stand in local elections in Spain as long as you are registered on the padrón where you live. For the latest information on issues affecting UK nationals in Spain, sign up for email alerts at gov.uk/livinginspain and follow us on social media at facebook.com/britsinspain.

Welcome to Nauplia Geography Nauplia is situated on the Argolic Gulf in the northeast Peloponnese. Most of the old town is on a peninsula jutting into the gulf; this peninsula forms a naturally protected bay that is enhanced by the addition of manmade moles. Originally almost isolated by marshes, deliberate landfill projects, primarily since the 1970s, have nearly doubled the land area of the city. History Tourism emerged slowly in the 1960s, but not to the same degree as some other Greek areas. Nevertheless, it tends to attract a number of tourists from Germany and the Scandinavian countries in particular. Nafplio enjoys a very sunny and mild climate, even by Greek standards, and as a consequence

has become a popular day or weekend road-trip destination for Athenians in wintertime. Nafplio is a port, with fishing and transport ongoing, although the primary source of local employment currently is tourism, with two beaches on the other side of the peninsula from the main body of the town and a large amount of local accommodation. The building of the National Bank of Greece is probably the only one in the world to have been built in the Mycenaean Revival architectural style. Architecture and urban sculpture Acronauplia is the oldest part of the city though a modern hotel has been built on it. Until the thirteenth century, it was a town on its own. The arrival of the Venetians and the Franks

transformed it into part of the town fortifications. Other fortifications of the city include the Palamidi and Bourtzi, which is located in the middle of the harbour. Nafplio maintains a traditional architectural style with many traditional-style colourful buildings and houses, partly influenced by the Venetians, because of the domination of 1338-1540. Also, modern-era neoclassical buildings are also preserved, while the building of the National Bank of Greece is an example of Mycenaean Revival architecture. Around the city can be found several sculptures and statues. They are related mostly with the modern history of Nafplio, such as the statues of Ioannis Kapodistrias, Otto of Greece and Theodoros Kolokotronis.

He can't forget her My partner and I are both widowed. I am very happy and every day with him is wonderful, except for one day of the year when my partner insists on spending the anniversary of his wife’s death on his own. This upsets me greatly, and I find myself feeling very jealous of his late wife. He just leaves the house and comes back without telling me where he’s been. My marriage wasn’t great - I loved my husband in my own way, but I don’t feel I need to commemorate his passing every year.

www.costablancapeople.com

He's let himself go Before we got married my fiance had always kept himself trim. We’ve been married for 8 months now and he is carrying a few extra pounds. I was initially drawn to him for his good looks and physique, but now he regularly brings home takeaways and is drinking more beer. How can I tell him about it without upsetting him? Contentment after getting married is a common occurrence. You might need to be more direct and tell him he is losing his good looks. Everyone knows takeaways are high in calories. A treat every now and again is fine, but it’s a slippery slope once you start eating these types of foods regularly. One or two pounds are easy to lose, but one or two stones are not - that’s when it becomes really difficult to shed the excess weight. You could always say that you want to lose a few pounds yourself (even if you don’t), and suggest you both go on a bit of a diet, and take up some fun exercise together.

You’ve both lost your spouse and everyone grieves differently. Your marriage wasn’t so great but his was different. You’ve both been lucky enough to find love again. You could try telling him how you feel, and at least then your feelings will be out in the open, but I think you should be very gracious here and grant him this time alone. It’s only one day of the year, and perhaps you could do something enjoyable on that day, so that you are not sitting at home dwelling. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. Brit tourists targeted by Costa Blanca

Authorities in Catalonia clear protests on AP7 freeway near Girona

A major drive to attract and keep British tourists is at the heart of a €650,000 investment by the Comunidad Valenciana regional government, which started off with its stand at London's World Travel Market (WTM) trade fair a week ago and is set to continue in the UK capital next month. A new campaign and slogan has been devised, one showing a smiling couple on a sunny balcony and others with tourists on beaches, with the wording, in English: “Time goes by, but some things always stay the same, like home,” and the catch-phrase, “Always Brit Friendly.” Regional tourism secretary Francesc Colomer says their aim is to convince Brits that they will always be welcome, 'whatever happens with Brexit', and that they can 'feel safe, well and worry-free in the Comunidad Valenciana'. Now the WTM has finished, Colomer's team is planning a 'huge publicity event' in London on 3rd December, as well as 'other actions' – as yet undefined – to 'attempt to diversify the offer' within the British market and 'seek out new segments'. Indeed, as well as enjoying some of the best year-round climate in Spain and at least four months of beach weather per year, the Comunidad Valenciana offers breathtakingly-beautiful scenery and a host of other attractions suitable for families and for culture vultures alike. Whilst the campaign is aimed at the three provinces of Castellón, Valencia and Alicante as a whole, it is focusing

The Catalan police have cleared the AP-7 highway in Girona after proindependence protesters blocked it for around 16 hours. Riot officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra, the regional police force, began arriving on the scene at 10am and were greeted with flying objects hurled at them by around 200 demonstrators. The roadblock organiser, a movement called Democratic Tsunami that has no visible leaders, had called off the action at 8am, but a group of supporters decided to stay behind. At noon the highway remained closed to traffic as cleanup crews worked to remove the barricades. There were severe traffic disruptions on Wednesday morning, with vehicles backed up for as much as 13 kilometers between Fornells de la Selva and Girona going both ways. Around 500 vehicles were trapped by the roadblock, according to the Mossos d’Esquadra. Emergency services showed up to hand out food and blankets to trapped drivers and to assist elderly people and individuals with health problems. The roadblock was set up near the town of Salt, at Kilometre 64 of the busy AP7 highway that connects Spain and France. The action began at 6pm last

more on the latter of these – which is arguably the most touristy – and especially its coastline, known as the Costa Blanca, and its long-standing 'Brit-magnet' Benidorm, which was one of Spain's first-ever towns that opened up to international tourism in the 20th century and was initially the first or even only parts of the country British travellers would have seen in the 1960s and 1970s. Valencia is concerned that the effects of Brexit may shrink the British tourism market still further, it having seen a reduction nationwide since the referendum in 2016 – although it's not all bad news: overnight stays in Benidorm apartments, hotels and holiday parks rose by 5 percent just in the last two weeks of October, says the Costa Blanca hoteliers' association HOSBEC. Its secretary-general Nuria Montes says British holidaymakers 'have become fed up with the whole Brexit scenario' and with the 'alarm' generated that their future trips may become more expensive and difficult, and are 'making bookings as normal'. But she believes the increase in 'DIY' holidays to Benidorm may have more to do with the Thomas Cook collapse and UK nationals seeking 'safe and stable destinations'.

Although the fact that figures for the highlytouristy seaside town have improved based upon the same fortnight last year could be the unusually-warm weather forecast – although a chilly snap has set in on the region's coast, October was almost summerlike in the area and far warmer and sunnier than the UK at the time. Forecast bookings for Alicante-Elche airport are at about the same levels as last year's, although could see an improvement and the general feel is optimistic, Montes reveals. “Even the odd airline which had planned to make small reductions in its operations has now called these off, given that the outlook is so hopeful,” she says.

Tuesday, after French, Spanish and Catalan police officers had cleared the border crossing near La Jonquera, where protesters had set up barricades for 30 hours. Nineteen people were arrested there on Tuesday. Democratic Tsunami, which encourages direct action in support of Catalan independence, had announced three days of roadblocks. In a social media statement, the movement said on Wednesday that “we consider that the goal has been reached” and called off the roadblocks. This goal was described as creating “a Spanish state isolated from Europe through the strength of the people.” The statement also warned that “Tsunami’s international network” is planning new action, and demanded that the Spanish state sit down for talks in order to negotiate a way out of the conflict.

UK apologises over arrest warrant comments The British police have apologised to Spain for stating that the European arrest warrant (EAW) for Catalan separatist Clara Ponsatí was “disproportionate under UK law,” but will still not execute the order until more information is provided. Ponsatí, a former education minister in the Catalan regional government, fled to Scotland after the failed unilateral declaration of independence Clara Ponsatí in October 2017, and is facing charges of sedition for her involvement in the breakaway bid. Spain’s Supreme Court reactivated European arrest warrants for Ponsatí and two other former members of the Catalan government – Toni Comín and Lluís Puig – last week, a month after handing down a decision in the trial of 12 other leaders of the 2017 secession bid. Nine of the defendants received prison sentences for sedition and

misuse of public funds. British authorities consider that the crime of sedition under UK law can also be considered a crime against public order, which

carries a less serious sentence. In its first communication, Britain’s SIRENE (Supplementary Information Request at the National Entries) office, which aims to ensure police cooperation between EU member states, said that the EAW had been reviewed by a specialist UK lawyer on behalf of the National Crime Agency and they had determined that it was “disproportionate under UK law.” But Reuters reported that in a

message on Twitter on Wednesday night, Spain’s caretaker Foreign Minister Josep Borrell explained that British police had “corrected their use of the term disproportionate” to refer to Ponsatí's extradition request. In his message, Borrell shared a copy of the new communication from SIRENE which stated: “In our previous message our reply incorrectly stated that the warrant was disproportionate – it is not disproportionate, it is just currently lacking in essential information. We apologize for this miscommunication.” In the document, British police request more information regarding the nature of the offense, the time and place at which it was committed, and the connection between the offense and Ponsatí. The EAW will remain on hold until this “essential information" is provided.

Spanish royals visit Cuba

25

EXPAT BRIEFINGS www.expatbriefings.com “Expert Financial Advice for Expats”

For the first time since Havana was founded 500 years ago, a Spanish monarch is on a state visit to Cuba. Such a trip had been attempted several times in the past, but was always canceled at the last minute for a variety of reasons. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia landed in Havana recently to seal the full normalisation of historically complex relations between both countries. Cuba was the only Latin American country that the Spanish royals had never visited officially. In 1999 the reigning monarch at the time, Juan Carlos, spent some time in Havana but only as part of a regional summit of state and government leaders. During their two-day visit to the Cuban capital, the royals will meet with representatives of Spanish businesses on the island. The Spanish government has insisted that the visit, while

highly symbolic, does not constitute official support for the government of Cuba. The visit will take place against a complicated backdrop: the US is strengthening its embargo on Cuba, and a newly enforced provision of the Helms-Burton Act opens the door to US lawsuits against businesses that may be “trafficking” with property that was confiscated after the Cuban revolution. This could potentially affect several Spanish companies, including the hotel chain Meliá and the airline Air Europa. In a clear show of support for Spanish interests in Cuba, the royals will stay at the the Iberostar Grand Packard, a major resort in Havana that is on Washington’s blacklist. The official agenda begins on Tuesday with a meeting between Felipe VI and the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, at the Palace of the Revolution.

Both leaders are expected to sign Agreement Framework a between Cuba and Spain aimed at guiding bilateral cooperation and cultural exchanges over the coming years. In the meantime, Queen Letizia will visit the building restoration workshop Escuela Taller de Restauración Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, which was founded with Spanish support. Later the royals are scheduled to go on a tour of Old Havana, where they will have lunch at a paladar – a private, family-run restaurant – just as Barack and Michelle Obama did in 2016. Other activities include a dance performance at the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso, a dinner offered by the president, and meetings with members of the Spanish community in Havana and with Cuban civil society leaders.

Whether you’re thinking of selling or are in the process of completing your sale, there’s one thing that most people dread…. Moving out! It’s not too bad if you’re selling your holiday home, as most times they’ll be sold fully furnished. But, if it’s your permanent residence, you’ll have accumulated not only additional furnishings, but lots of memories along the way that need to be boxed up and moved with you, on to your new home. It’s always advisable to start early and having a sort through what you’ll be wanting to keep, and what you’ll be wanting to sell or donate, when your house comes to the market for sale. But I know that this isn’t everyone’s favourite job, and putting it off until you’ve found a buyer seems like a good idea. If you start early enough and do a little at a time, this will definitely help ease any potential stress of the impending move. But, if time is not on your side and you need to “get moving” literally and physically, then start by putting post-it notes on your items. Use green ones for “go,” red ones for “no” and yellow ones for “maybe.”

Jewellery can slide everywhere, even in jewellery boxes. By threading necklaces through a straw then closing the clasp will keep them from tangling together. Most importantly with any move, is to be prepared for your first night in your new home. Keep one box to the side with all of your immediate necessities within easy reach. Put in the box: paper plates, plastic cutlery, paper cups, kitchen towel, toilet paper, soap and dishwashing liquid. At least now you won’t be rummaging around going through every box looking for soap! But, more importantly is to keep all your medications to hand. You do know the easier alternative is to pay someone to do all this for you - whilst you sit back and look forward to the first night in your new home! Selling your home? Enjoy the journey!

The Spanish home building industry is facing a familiar problem in the lack of financing for small and mid-sized developers, claimed industry insiders at a recent conference organised by the IE Real Estate Club. At the conference industry insiders from the building and investment world discussed the financing options open to Spanish developers in the current market. Carolina Roca, General Manager of the developer Grupo Roca, and VP of the Asprima builders’ association in Madrid, warned that banks are turning off the taps to small and mid-sized developers, many of whom need 100 percent financing above land acquisition costs. Banks are reportedly tightening up their lending conditions, meaning that only the biggest developers backed by international funds who can afford to finance 30 percent to 40 percent of development costs from equity can now get financing from banks with

interest rates of around 2 percent. If small and mid-sized developers turn to alternative sources of funding other than banks, interest rates go up to 8 percent or more, making the business riskier. In large percentage of cases the numbers don’t add up with such high financing costs in today’s pricesensitive market for new homes. Unlike highly consolidated markets such as the UK and France, where big developers dominate the market, small and mid-sized players are the backbone of the home building industry in Spain. If financing dries up for small and midsized developers it is unlikely that Spain will be able to deliver the 150,000 new homes each year that developers claim the market needs. A supply shortage implies higher costs for new homes in a market where housing costs are already a political hot potato, with activists calling for legislation to control rents and clamp down on developers.

Changes in flight compensation Making a claim for a delayed flight no longer requires the affected passenger to show his or her boarding pass as proof, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled. Where a flight is three hours or more late in departing – even if it reaches its destination less than three hours later than planned – passengers are automatically entitled to €250 compensation for short-haul or €600 for long-haul flights, and the airline is obliged by international law to provide refreshments or vouchers for the same, although the sum is not overnight and stipulated, accommodation if the plane time slots make this necessary. Generally, as these compensation sums are standard, reclaiming them is a painless, administrative exercise handled by mainstream customer service departments, but travellers due to fly between Paris and Venice on an easyJet flight on 24th October were denied payment after their return to the French capital was delayed by three hours and seven minutes. They were told they had to provide their original boarding passes to be able to claim their standard €250. The airline did not deny the flight had been over three hours late in taking off, but would not pay up without sight of the boarding passes, so the affected passengers applied to a court in Paris. French judges sought clarification from the ECJ, which confirmed that Article 7 of European regulation 261/2004 found easyJet to be in breach of its legal duties.

The ruling states that an airline cannot refuse payment solely on the basis of the passengers' not having produced proof of checking in, unless it is able to provide clear evidence that the traveller never boarded the aircraft at all. If the airline has indeed transported passengers with a confirmed booking, it is understood, by default, that said passengers have complied with the requirement to present themselves for check-in, so proof of this already exists without extra evidence – in the form of a boarding pass – having to be requested. The Spanish-based association Reclamador de Vuelos ('Flight Reclaimer') says the ECJ verdict is binding in all European courts. Its communications manager Javier López says: “This is a great change for passengers who, on many occasions,

throw their boarding passes in the bin as soon as they get off the plane, or these passes, where not in paper format, 'disappear' from the airline's App on the passenger's phone once the date of the flight has passed. “This is a very common situation – airlines trying to 'pull a fast one' when a passenger claims compensation for a delay, attempting to wriggle out of it where there is no boarding pass to show. “But this doesn't mean you shouldn't keep your boarding pass, or a copy of it – despite the ECJ verdict, a boarding pass can still provide very valuable information in proving your case in the event of any dispute. “We always advise affected passengers to keep theirs, and take a copy of it if they send the original by post.”

Acts of Remembrance across Spain Orihuela Costa A Remembrance Day Parade and Service on the 10th November 2019 was held at the church in Mil Palmeras by the Orihuela Costa & District Branch of The Royal British Legion, at which many UK service association attended with their individual Standard (Flag) and included the Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch. The service was conducted by Pastor Keith Brown and joined by dignitaries and officials of Pilar de la Horadada town hall and the Royal British Legion.

collectors went to The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. It was a time for all to reflect and join in the act of Remembrance through the prayer and affirmation: They shall grow not old, As we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun And in the morning, We will remember them. “Long may the tradition and sign of respect & gratitude be maintained” It is no surprise that the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal Naval Association attend many formal events along the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida as they are located between the two coastlines and their members are formed from people who live along the region between Alicante to Cartagena. Subsequent to the Armistice Day parade and service the Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch members gathered at the Che Loco Restaurant at El Chaparal for a superb buffet meal and lots of convivial conversation.

The hundreds of people in attendance exceeded the church capacity and spilled into the grounds around the church, hardy enough to brave the chilly northerly wind to listen, view and immerse themselves in the ceremony via a huge temporary screen and audio system whilst seated. All of which was graciously made possible by the Pilar del la Horadada town hall and was tremendously appreciated by all that were there. This 75th anniversary of 1944 WWII was musically supported in the church by The Royal British Legion Phoenix Band and resoundingly assisted outside the church by the Torrevieja Pipes & Drums created awesome pride and pageantry while leading the parade of all the Standards to the church for the service and from the church after the service. The ‘Lone Piper’ played some spectacular traditional laments during the laying of the poppies and wreaths, which reaffirmed the nostalgic tradition of ‘Remembering The Fallen’ and being ever grateful for their sacrifice by all affirming “We Will Remember Them”.

These events are just some of the many formal and informal events that take place during the year with the Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch, who also meet on the first Wednesday of each month as a membership and support forum. With over 20,000 members across 300+ branches in the UK and overseas, it is a family of current and former Naval Service personnel, relatives and supporters of the Royal Navy. An RNA spokesperson said, “Whether we are catching up with friends at our regular social events; fund-raising; advising on welfare and employment matters, or just providing an arm around the

All the Standard bearers performed their role with tremendous fortitude by maintaining dignified control of their respective standard in what can only be described as a ‘howling wind’. As like other associations, the Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch is committed to demonstrating their dedication in upholding traditions and showing their sign of respect by parading their Standard and members attending not only UK but also Spanish official ceremonies. Offertory proceeds from the amicable band of collectors went to The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Torrevieja Mondays Armistice Day Parade and Service on the 11th November 2019 was held by The Royal British Legion Torrevieja Branch at the La Siesta Church, Torrevieja. Many UK service associations attended with their Standards (Flag) and included the Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch. Father Richard conducted the service which was attended by dignitaries and officials of Torrevieja town hall and the Royal British Legion. This 100th Anniversary of the first ceremony that was inaugurated by King George V was musically supported during the service in the church by the Torrevieja Royal British Legion Concert Band and once again the Torrevieja Pipes & Drums provided outstanding music during the marching parade of Standards and the ‘Lone Piper’, who performed terrific renditions of laments during the formal laying of the poppies. Offertory proceeds via the enthusiastic band of

shoulder, our natural willingness to help others stems from the tradition and camaraderie that only Naval Service life can instil. Everything we do is inextricably linked to our core values.” Go to the website www.rnatorrevieja.com to join or get more information about this friendly and engaging group of people, even if you are Nonmilitary or serving/veteran Merchant Navy or other nations Naval personnel who are all welcome to join and attend functions as an Associate Member, then contact either the Chairman Paul Edwards on 618644934, Membership Secretary, Danny Kay on Tel 966716274 or email rosendanes@yahoo.co.uk or the Secretary Margaret Forshaw on Tel 966921996.

Countrywide Around Spain, the British Embassy in Madrid and Consulates across the country marked the Armistice by taking part in solemn acts of remembrance. This year is particularly significant as it marks not only 80 years since the start of the Second World War, but also 70 years since the founding of NATO – an organisation committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes and of which both the UK and Spain are members. Every year, many UK Nationals attend Remembrance events across Spain. These services and other events are a way for communities to come together to honour those who served and ensure that their sacrifices are

never forgotten. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I am proud to wear the poppy – as a symbol not only of remembrance, but of hope for a peaceful future. In every act of remembrance, we honour the memory of the fallen and pledge to care for the living. I am grateful that so many Embassy and Consulate staff have taken part in events right across Spain and that the British communities here hold services of remembrance each year. It is incredibly important that we continue to commemorate the fallen and reflect on the importance of peace.” Staff representing the Embassy and Consulates took part in many Remembrance Sunday services across Spain, including HMA

Hugh Elliott reading at the Remembrance service at St George’s Church, Madrid, alongside Consul Sarah-Jane Morris, the Defence Attaché Captain Ian Clarke and members of the British armed forces. Elsewhere, Consul General Lloyd Milen gave a reading at a service in Ibiza; Consul Charmaine Arbouin laid a wreath at the English cemetery in Malaga and Tenerife Vice Consul Helen Keating read the Act of Commitment and laid a wreath in the sea at Westhaven Bay, Tenerife, alongside representatives of the Royal British Legion; Alicante Vice Consul Sara Munsterhjelm gave a reading in Orihuela Costa and Barcelona Vice Consul laid a wreath at the service in Madremanya.

Increase in Injuries caused by the Abuse of New Technologies • Tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and neck pain, among the most common complaints. • Reducing time of use, holding the gadget at eye level, and using both hands when typing may help avoid these injuries. An increase in the use of electronic devices such as mobile phones and tablets has increased the number of traumatology consultations due to neuro-muscular-skeletal injuries, according to Doctor Alfonso Cort, Traumatologist at Quirónsalud Hospitals in Alicante and Torrevieja. According to recent studies, each of us spends an average of five-and-a-half hours connected to our mobile phones and computers, which explains the appearance of so-called technological injuries, increasingly evident in patients of younger ages. Among the most common injuries, we can include tendonitis of the thumb, carpal tunnel syndrome, and epicondylitis or tennis

elbow, due to the use of the mouse in an inadequate position or repetitive movements. “These pathologies have their origin in the repetition of the same movements with our hands and fingers for long periods of time, which causes inflammation of the tendons and nerves,” states Doctor Cort.

tension and overload in the region of the neck and shoulders, caused by muscle overload from continued use of mobile devices, because we bend our head for continuous periods of time.”

“These injuries,” indicates the traumatologist, “start to manifest as a constant tingling on the hands, especially at night, accompanied by muscle pain in the upper limb.” The neck and back are two other areas that are significantly affected by the use of mobiles and tablets, due to the posture we adopt, both standing and seated, when using these electronic devices. “The most common injury,” says Doctor Felipe Garibo, Specialist in the Spine Unit of the Traumatology Service at Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia, “is cervicalgia, which manifests initially with pain,

To avoid these injuries, Doctor Garibo recommends reducing the amount of time we use these devices, holding them at eye level to avoid bending our heads, using both thumbs and both hands when writing texts, and performing exercises to improve the cervical muscles.

Main Injuries Technology Abuse

Derived

from

1. Tension, overload and feeling of weight in the area of the shoulders or neck, due to overloading of the cervicoscapular muscles. 2. Headaches and/or dizziness due to the sustained contraction of the suboccipital muscles, and the possible effects of maintaining the gaze fixed on a screen for a prolonged period of time. 3. Different alterations of the cervical spine, due to asymmetric tensions derived from rigid or unstable positions, or the blocking of certain segments of the vertebral spine. 4. Pain and rigidity in the hands and fingers, and even tingling. With the excessive use of the thumb that is tied to the use of smartphones, the

appearance of tendonitis is common due to the movement of this digit. For this reason, we recommend the use of digital pens. 5. Referred pain in the frontal and cervical regions, and even a feeling pro pressure in the ear canal and/or the eyeball, due to the excessive use of mobile phones, which actives a myofascial trigger pints (MTP), described as hyperirritable nodes. 6. Weakness and inhibition of the muscles that stabilise the trunk and vertebral spine, as well as the loss of motor control, which leads to the loss of the normal physiological pattern of movement. 7. Epicondylitis or tennis elbow, due to the use of the mouse in an inadequate position or repetitive movements.

Donation keeps cats warm this winter

Charity Page

Orphanage presentation It was with great pleasure that Eric Raddings presented Vicente Martinez Agullo, director of the San Jose Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela, with Primark vouchers to help toward providing clothing for the children the orphanage. Vicente and his team care for 80 plus orphans of all nationalities from all parts of the Alicante community, while also providing and maintaining four apartments in Orihuela and Alicante, each housing four young people, making the transition from the orphanage to becoming self sufficient in the outside world.

Another great donation to the Albergue, Torrevieja. Two very generous Rojales ladies, Sofie and Kelly, El Cubo Cleaning Services, donated a variety of light and heavy blankets, beds and igloos for our cats. These igloos are fantastic. Not only do they help keep the cats warm during

a cold winter evening but also provides a hidey hole for those cats that are shy or just want a bit of peace time. Thank you very much ladies. If you care to know more about the shelter and animals or indeed like to help in any way contact alberguecats@gmail.com

Eric is the President of Torrevieja Maritime Association, which is a group of people who meet the second Wednesday of the month at midday at Che Loco in El Chaparral, whose aim is to ‘stimulate and maintain interest in maritime activities for those in the area’. Anyone interested in joining the group please contact the secretary at torreviejama@outlook.com for more information.

He didn’t know it but this was a very lucky day for Rusty as many of the charity’s volunteers collaborated over the next six

Now to the best news. Rusty has been adopted. This group photo shows Pets In Spain charity volunteers all of whom collaborated over the past 6 months to ensure that Rusty recovered under the best possible circumstances. The charity does not receive any grants or funds from local or regional authorities and donations are much needed to pay for veterinary fees and can be by PayPal to info@petsinspain.com or at the charity shop, or via bank transfer from the donations page on our web site: www.petsinspain.com A video of Rusty taken on the day of his rescue can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/user/PetsinSp ain

Friends reunion special 'in the works' As mega-hit Friends continues to celebrate its 25th anniversary, sources claim that the six core stars and creators of the NBC comedy from Warner Bros. TV are in talks to reunite on HBO Max. Talks are currently underway for an unscripted reunion special that would feature Jennifer Aniston (Rachel), Courteney Cox (Monica), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Matt LeBlanc (Joey), Matthew Perry (Chandler) and David Schwimmer (Ross) as well as series creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman.

Sources caution that a deal is far from done and agreements with cast and creatives still need to be hammered out. When and if deals are completed, the challenge then becomes sorting out everyone's schedules. Of course, the talks could fizzle and the whole concept could fall apart. Sources note that WarnerMedia Entertainment and direct-to-consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt has been the driving force pushing for the Friends reunion, which would pair well with HBO

Max's debut and the comedy's new streaming home. Sources say that the cast is willing to do it is an accomplishment in and of itself. The cast and creators, for their part, have remained steadfast over the years since the comedy wrapped its 10-season run that they would not do any sort of scripted revival. NBC staged a miniFriends reunion in 2016 as part of a special honouring legendary director and producer James Burrows. Five of the six stars — save for Perry — participated in the look back that also featured the casts of Will and Grace, Cheers and The Big

Bang Theory. For her part, Aniston recently shot down word of a Friends reboot (with a flat-out "no") but did tell the daytime host that "We would love for there to be something, but we don't know what that something is. So we're just trying. We're working on something." A Friends reunion would immediately provide the kind of must-see TV that an upstart streaming service like HBO Max would want. Disney, for example, launched its streaming service Tuesday with its highly anticipated Star Wars scripted drama The Mandalorian.

Cocktails made simple There’s no better way to get a party started or kick off a feast than with cocktails. But you don't need to buy in specialist ingredients and fancy kit to make impressive drinks. These simple cocktails are easy to make at home. Each requires just three ingredients and is ready in minutes. With many sharing the same components and only a small group of core spirits needed, mix up a storm with minimum mess and fuss. The Negroni This Italian concoction is not for the faint-hearted. Combining three different spirits with a healthy dose of bitters to kickstart your appetite, negronis make a great apéritif before a meal. With three ingredients combined in equal proportion, negronis are a doddle to make. Mix one part gin, one part red vermouth and one part Campari (a bitter-tasting liqueur) over ice cubes in a tumbler glass. Garnish with orange peel and you’re done. The Martini One of the most famous cocktails worldwide, the perfect martini is something everyone should master. Once you've got the basics down, endless riffs on the original are possible. Pour one part dry vermouth and six parts gin over ice cubes in a cocktail shaker, and stir or shake. Strain into a v-shaped martini cocktail glass. A dry martini will have more

spirit (closer to 100 percent gin) while a wet cocktail will have more vermouth. For a dirty martini, add olive brine and an olive or for a martini with a twist, add lemon peel. Twist the peel before you add it to the glass to release the fruit's natural oils. The Moscow mule Originating in 1940s Manhattan rather than Moscow, legend has it the cocktail was created after two traders wanted to sell more of their wares: one sold vodka, the other ginger beer. They combined them in a drink and the Moscow mule was born. A Moscow mule is typically made and served in a copper mug. Squeeze around one tablespoon of lime juice over ice cubes then add a lime wedge. Pour in one part vodka, top with three parts ginger beer, stir and serve. The Kir Royale French priest Felix Kir is said to have popularised this cocktail in Burgundy after the Second World

War to promote two key local ingredients: wine and crème de cassis. The original is traditionally made with the white wine Bourgogne Aligot but the 'royale' indicates it's made with Champagne. Add one part crème de cassis, a blackcurrant-based liqueur, to a Champagne flute. Slowly top with Champagne for a bubbly royale or any other white wine for a straight kir. Garnish with fresh blackcurrants or raspberries and serve chilled. Cuba Libre This celebratory cocktail was invented after the SpanishAmerican war when Cuba won its freedom. It’s a simple mix of three widely available ingredients that balance sweetness and bitterness for a refreshing long drink. Fill a highball glass with ice cubes, squeeze in the juice of half a lime and drop in the spent lime. Add a generous measure of white or medium rum and top with cola. Stir well and serve with an optional mint garnish.

Healthiest Foods to Eat for Breakfast The next time you rush out the door in the morning without something to eat, consider this: Skipping breakfast can set you up for overeating later in the day. A healthy morning meal, on the other hand, provides energy, satisfies your appetite, and sets the stage for smart decisions all day long. You want to aim for a breakfast that combines good carbs and fibre with protein.

Oatmeal Old-school breakfast option oatmeal isn't just low in calories and high in complex carbs. Oats contain beta-glucan, a type of fiber that's been shown to help lower cholesterol when eaten regularly. Need another reason to dig in? Oats are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, folate, and potassium. Steel-cut oats, which take about 15 minutes to cook, contain more fibre than rolled oats or instant varieties, but any

type of oatmeal is a healthy choice. Just avoid the flavoured kinds, which can be packed with sugar. Instead, sweeten your bowl with milk and a bit of honey, and top with fruit and nuts.

Greek yougurt This tangy, creamy type of yogurt is loaded with calcium and boasts plenty of protein—nearly twice as much as regular yogurt—to keep you feeling full throughout the morning. Choose a plain, nonfat variety, and add some fruit to give it some flavour and nutrition. Wheat germ A little wheat germ goes a long way. Just two tablespoons provides about 15 percent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin E and 10 percent of your daily folate. Vitamin E is often a little low in people's diets, so this is a good way to add in some extra - especially if you don't eat a lot of nuts or seeds, two other big sources.

Bananas There's nothing like a banana at breakfast to keep those mid-morning cravings at bay. The yellow fruit— especially when they're still a touch green—are one of the best sources of resistant starch, a healthy carbohydrate that keeps you feeling fuller longer. Thanks to a healthy dose of potassium, an electrolyte that helps lower blood pressure naturally, bananas are a particularly good choice for people with hypertension. Eggs Once shunned for being high in dietary cholesterol (one yolk contains about 60 percent of your daily allotment), eggs are now embraced as a healthy source of protein and nutrients like vitamin D. Research has shown that the cholesterol in our food has less of an impact on blood cholesterol than previously thought. Blueberries Fresh or frozen, these tiny superfruits pack a big antioxidant punch. Studies suggest that eating blueberries regularly can help improve everything from memory and motor skills to blood pressure and metabolism. (Wild blueberries, in particular, have one of the highest concentrations of the powerful antioxidants known as anthocyanins.) Blueberries are also lower in calories than

a lot of other fruits (they contain just 80 per cup). Coffee Espresso doesn't just wake you up. Drinking coffee has been linked to a lower risk of several diseases (such as diabetes and prostate cancer), and it may even help you live longer. Researchers suspect the combination of caffeine and antioxidants are responsible for many of the observed health benefits. Of course, loading coffee up with cream and sugar may erase any potential benefits. So skip the fancy flavored drinks, and stick with skim milk Tea Tea has a pretty impressive résumé of health benefits, too. Because it has less caffeine, it hydrates you more effectively than coffee, and it's also a rich source of the immunity-boosting antioxidants known as catechins. All tea (black, green, and white) provides antioxidants, but green tea may be healthiest of all. Research suggests that drinking five cups a day can increase your body's metabolism and help you lose more weight around the middle. Cantaloupe Any fruit is a good addition to your breakfast and cantaloupe is no exception. A six-ounce serving (roughly a quarter of a melon) contains just 50 calories and a full 100 percent of your recommended daily intake of both vitamin C and vitamin A, an important nutrient for smooth, younger-looking skin. Like most melons, cantaloupe has a high water concentration, which means it will help you stay hydrated and keep you feeling full until lunchtime.

CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN With only a little over five weeks to go until Christmas day it is time for those of us that like to make our own Christmas puddings and cake to get serious and start to plan this year’s creations. There still is plenty of time to make both but both Christmas cakes and particularly puddings benefit from being stored for a while and of course in the case of the cake there is the option to keep feeding it with a little more alcohol to improve the flavour! It is not difficult to make with perhaps the most time-consuming stage making sure you have all the ingredients to hand.

Guinness Christmas Pudding INGREDIENTS 140g raisins 140g sultanas 140g currants 140g dates , chopped 50g mixed peel 1 large Bramley apple (about 125g), peeled and finely chopped 250ml Guinness Extra stout zest 1 orange zest 1 lemon 100g cold butter, plus extra for the basin 100g dark muscovado sugar, plus 2 tbsp 100g fresh white breadcrumb 50g self-raising flour ½ tsp ground cloves ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp nutmeg 2 eggs, beaten

METHOD 1. Mix the dried fruit and apple, then add the Guinness, orange and lemon zests and stir. Cover and leave overnight to soak. Butter a 1.25 litre/2 pint pudding basin, then spoon in 2 tbsp dark muscovado sugar. Turn the bowl at an angle, jiggling the sugar around as you go to coat the inside of the bowl. 2. Mix the remaining dry ingredients in a large bowl. Grate the butter, then add to the bowl along with the eggs and fruit, and stir well. Spoon into the basin and level the top. 3. Take a sheet of foil about 30cm long, cover with a same-size sheet of greaseproof paper and butter the paper. Fold a 3cm pleat in the centre. 4. Sit the pudding on a heatproof saucer in a saucepan, then pour in just-boiled water to come halfway up basin. Cover and steam for 6 hrs, topping up water occasionally. Re-cover with fresh paper and foil and store in a cool place. To reheat, steam for 1 hr or microwave, without foil, for 10 mins on Medium.

Traditional Christmas Cake INGREDIENTS 150g raisins 125g stoned dates 125g sultanas 100g glace cherries 100ml Irish whiskey (all of the above are soaked together overnight before making the cake) 225g real butter extra butter for greasing 200g soft brown sugar 4 eggs grated rind of 1 lemon & 1 orange 2tbls black treacle (light molasses) 225g plain (all purpose) flour ½ tsp salt 1 rounded tsp baking powder 1 tsp mixed spice ¼ tsp ground ginger ¼ tsp grated nutmeg ¼ tsp ground clove 50g ground almonds 50ml extra whiskey

METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 150°C (300°F), Gas mark 2. Grease a

20cm (8") cake tin and line it with greaseproof paper. Wrap some Newspaper around the outside and tie it with string. This will help the outside of the cake from browning too much during the cooking and prevent it from drying out. 2. Beat together, in a bowl, the sugar & butter until creamy. Gradually add the eggs, dusting a little of the flour in with each egg added. Add the treacle & grated fruit rinds and mix well. 3. Sift the flour and baking powder into the bowl of soaked fruit and add the salt, spices and almonds. Stir all of this together, mixing well. 4. Fold the fruit mix into the egg mix, stirring evenly. Spoon the completed mix into the cake tin. Pull a little dip back in the middle of the cake so that when it rises, it will level itself off better. 5. Bake in the centre of the oven for 3 hours. If it is browning a little too much cover it loosely with tinfoil. Cook for another ½ hour. The cake is cooked when a

fine skewer, inserted into the centre, comes out clean and dry. Make small holes all over the warm cake with a skewer and spoon the extra 50ml whiskey over the holes until it has all soaked in. Leave the cake to cool in the tin. When the cake is cold, remove it from the tin, peel off the lining paper, then wrap it first in clean greaseproof paper and then in foil. A small amount of brandy, sherry or whiskey (depending on your own favourite drink) should be spooned over the cake every week until Christmas. This process is called “feeding the cake”. You also should turn the cake over, each week, before you pour another little bit of your favourite drink over it. This ensures that all that lovely alcohol penetrates to the very middle of the Christmas cake and definitely creates that "Yum!" factor on Christmas Day. Enjoy!

Alcohol awareness Knowing how many units an alcoholic drink contains provides you with information regarding the strength of your beverage. This can allow you to make healthier choices when it comes to your drinking habits, in addition to a greater understanding of drink driving limits. How many units, for example, are in one small glass of wine? And how many are in a beer? Here is everything you need to know about alcohol units: An alcohol unit is defined as 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol. As alcoholic drinks come in various strengths and sizes, units are the only accurate way to measure how relatively strong a drink is and how it affects buyers. According to the Drinkaware website, “it takes an average adult around an hour to process one unit of alcohol so that there’s none left in their bloodstream, although it varies from person to person”. A 284ml half pint of beer containing 3.8 per cent alcohol by volume (ABV) lager equals 1.1 units – so a full pint is a little over two. For wine drinkers, a “small” 125ml glass will work out as about 1.4 units, while a 25ml shot of spirits – since it will normally contain 40 percent alcohol – is

exactly one unit. To keep alcohol-related health problems at bay, men and women are advised by the UK Government not to drink more than 14 units a week. If the police pull someone over who they think may be over the limit, they will carry out a breathalyser test at the roadside. When you drink alcohol, some of it will be passed from your blood to your breath, which is what the machine is designed to detect. Motorists will be asked to blow into the machine for three or more seconds, which will allow the machine to measure your blood alcohol content. If the reading shows that you’re over the limit, you will be penalised for drink driving. Anyone who is caught drink driving will face a ban from driving for at least 12 months and will be fined.

Recommended units In the late 70s, the UK Government advised men to drink no more than 56 units of alcohol a week. Later, this was reduced to 36, then to 28. In January 2016, the Chief Medical Officer reduced it to 14 units, explaining that there is no safe level of drinking and any health benefits of drinking were “an old wives tale”. Regular drinking at any level is now known to put people at risk and can rise with the amount that we drink. Women used to be advised to drink no more than two to three units a day, with men having a higher limit of three to four. However, current rules state that both men and women should stick to 14 units over a week, advising it is best to spread alcohol consumption over the week and not to “save up units” for one day.

Mental health: fuelling your anxious thoughts It's very helpful to be mindful of the various ways of thinking so that you can step back and realise when you’ve fallen into a “mind trap,” often referred to as “cognitive distortions.” Catastrophising Catastrophising is a distorted type of thinking that really amplifies anxiety. It’s when we jump to the worst possible conclusion, expecting disaster, or we see something as being far worse than it actually is. Sound familiar? We look at situations or challenges that face us, automatically imagining the worst possible thing that could happen. Our minds continue this with the what-ifs game. This is when our minds go on and on: What if this worst-case scenario happens? Catastrophising can generally take two forms. In the first, it takes a current situation and gives it a truly negative “spin.”The second occurs when we look to the future and anticipate all the things that are going to go wrong. Breaking the cycle can be hard, but as it is the case with anxiety overall there are some simple steps to acknowledge what’s happening and stop it before it gets out of control: • Recognize when you’re doing it! • Start recording your negative thoughts to yourself. Write down what happened and what you thought about the situation as objectively as you can, and then write down what your reaction or behaviours were. • Change your self-talk to be more forgiving and “hopeful.” • Instead of trying to stop yourself from catastrophising from here on out (it’s a hard one to avoid), realise that the worst thing that “could” happen isn’t always that terrible.

• Acknowledge your own growth by comparing how you have improved or done things better than a month/year/five years ago.

Polarised thinking Polarised thinking happens when you believe that there are only right or wrong outcomes or views. When you view things in terms of pure good or pure bad, it leads to unachievable standards and high stress levels. Polarised thinking crops up when you find yourself basing your hopes and expectations on a single event or outcome, such as getting the job you’ve dreamed about, wanting everyone to be impressed by you, a specific level of income, or even a certain level of

satisfaction. • Realise that there are a lot of levels between triumph and tragedy, and that most things fall somewhere in between. • Understand that no single accomplishment or failure is going to determine your future happiness. • Don’t expect that your values will never change or that other people will value the same things as you. • Try to figure out what the actual consequences of failure are, and have a plan for dealing with those consequences.

Filtering Filtering is taking the negative details and magnifying them while filtering out all positive aspects of a situation. For example, a person may pick out a single, unpleasant detail and dwell on it exclusively, so that their vision of reality becomes darkened or distorted. • Learn to evaluate things clearly and objectively, even if you still feel more aware of the bad stuff. • Look for positives. • Resist “minimalising” your efforts or achievements.

Simple steps to challenge cognitive distortions Be aware of what you are saying to yourself. Ask yourself: “What is going through my mind?” or “What is it about this situation that is upsetting me?” Challenge your thoughts. Remember, just because you think something doesn’t mean it’s true. Ask yourself: “Is this thought helpful?”; “Am I being realistic?”; “Would other people in this situation think these thoughts?”; “Is this an example of one of the common mind traps?” Consider the following strategies and ask yourself some of these questions: • Look for evidence: What’s the evidence for and against my thoughts? Am I focusing on the negatives and ignoring other information? Am I jumping to conclusions without looking at all the facts? • Search for alternative explanations: Are there any other possible explanations? Is there another way of looking at this? Am I being too inflexible in my thinking? • Put thoughts into perspective: Is it as bad as I am making out? What is the worst that could happen? How likely is it that the worst will happen? Even if it did happen, would it really be that bad? What could I do to get through it? • What is a more helpful thought? What can I say to myself that will help me remain calmer and help me achieve what I want to achieve in this situation?

Types of Haemorrhoids and anal fissures Many patients come to the QUPA clinic with questions about anal pathology and do not know the difference between a haemorrhoid problem and a painful anal fissure. Because of this we are going to help you understand which type of pathology each one is. Haemorrhoids Haemorrhoids are swollen veins en the anus area, specifically called “hemorroidal plexus”. The main symptoms we should be aware of are itching and pain and occasional bleeding. At QUPA we reassure you that although it may be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, we are talking about a benign disorder. Haemorrhoids tend to be more common in patients with a family history and in pregnant women. In any case, the most common reason is the strain caused by constipation or from having diarrhoea for a prolonged period of time. As a specialised clinic in eliminating haemorrhoids without surgery we recommend other methods such as the “elastic band” and “electro fulguration”. These can

also be used in more advanced cases. Despite medical advances in terms of treatment, we can always do our part to prevent haemorrhoids. For example, drink plenty of liquid and increase the ingestion of fibre to prevent constipation. We must also avoid abusing coffee, salt, spices and acidy food. Of course it is fundamental that we must maintain correct hygiene in the anus area. It is always best to use a neutral soap and to wear cotton undergarments rather than synthetic fabrics. Anal fissure Anal fissures can be classified depending on their form of appearance. In the first case, if the fissure appeared less than 6 weeks ago and the patient had never suffered from this problem, this would be an acute pathology. However, if the patient regularly suffers from anal fissures always in the same place or if it lasts for longer than 6 weeks, we could be talking about a chronic anal fissure. As specialists, in QUPA we remind you that anal fissures are classified also by their cause. If this is to do with

mechanical factors or unknown causes, this type is known as as primary anal fissures or idiopathic. If the patient has any systemic disease that could cause the appearance of anal fissures, this would be a secondary type. Normally primary anal fissures are produced in healthy people without any significant systemic pathology. It is normally a small trauma or the sum of many traumas that end up damaging the anal mucous and produce a tear. In patients with constipation, a repetitive strain could end in an anal fissure. On the other hand, a lot of frequent diarrhoea can also provoke a chemical burn and results in weakening the anus, causing a fissure. If you suffer from either haemorrhoids or anal fissures, you can come to QUPA - we analyse your case to determine which is the best form to treatment, we will give you as closed price, with guarantee of results and above all without surgery or time off work. See QUPAs advert on this page for details on how to get in touch.

Following hot on the heels of unrivalled success in the UK, Shaped my Meleah is now offering its ground breaking instant fat loss treatment here in the Southern Costa Blanca. Run by expert beautician Meleah, the ‘CoolSculpting’ treatment is based on Cryolipolisis or fat freezing as it is also known. This is a new procedure taking Hollywood by storm and involves the non‐ invasive cooling of body fat to break down fat cells, resulting in a reduction of body fat without damage to other tissues. The effect takes several weeks to be seen but the results are permanent and can result in up to 40 percent fat loss in one session. The procedure is non‐invasive, there are no long‐ term or significant side effects and anaesthesia and pain medication are not needed. During the procedure: • A vacuum applicator is placed on the skin to bring it into contact with cooling panels. • Patients feel a cold sensation for a few minutes, as it produces an anaesthetic effect. • The fat is cooled for up to 45 minutes. This treatment is specially designed to reduce areas of stubborn fat; it can target the chin, upper arms, ‘bra fat’, back fat, abdomen, flanks, underneath, buttock and inner and outer thighs. The treatment is scientifically proven to use cooling technology to safely and effectively eliminate fat cells. The method of freezing triggers fat cells to die and the body then naturally eliminates these fat cells. Four areas can be treated at the same time and

one session takes around 45 minutes to an hour. The most crucial part of this treatment is the aftercare, this requires the client to drink 2‐3 litres of water per day to flush out the dead fat cells. Results can be seen two weeks post treatment although the client will continue to gradually eliminate fat for up to 12 weeks, as long as the aftercare advice is followed. All clients must complete a consultation form as well as read and sign a declaration before any treatment can be undertaken. Shaped by Meleah is the only local specialist to offer this unique treatment; until now it was the preserve of leading clinics in Marbella and Madrid. Those wishing to discuss the treatment further or book a consultation can contact Meleah directly to discuss which clinic they would like to attend and the times she has available. Shaped by Meleah is open from10am until 6pm Monday to Friday and there is some flexibility for evening and weekend appointments but, these are limited and restricted to one clinic. To contact Meleah call 603 157 404, email: shapedbymeleah@gmail.com or find her on facebook or Instagram at shaped_by_meleah. Additionally, if you are a professional beauty salon, fitness or wellness centre and wish to discuss with Meleah the opportunity of her offering this treatment from you premises, then contact her on the above details. Her current clinics are located in San Miguel and La Fuente Centre but, she is looking to widen her reach across the region.

The blunt bob is back Ready for a hair change? The blunt bob is sweeping Instagram feeds everywhere. Forget bowl cuts or visions of page boy hair – Kaia Gerber, Lily James, Saoirse Ronan and Kim Kardashian have all thrown caution to the wind and lopped their hair from long to short this year. The result is jaw-skimming styles that feel modern, refreshing and a little bit sexy. As it goes, peekaboo necks are a sophisticated and sultry way to show a little more skin. If you’ve been toying with the idea of chopping off your hair for a while, now is officially the time to bite the bullet. It’s all about being brave with length, this year. The style du jour is a blunt, squared-off bob that finishes above the jaw. It feels so fresh and has a French, youthful vibe. It makes the faithful lob seem safe and suburban. And while J-Lo, Lily and Dua Lipa's blunt cuts are no doubt giving us serious hair envy, a new crop is a serious commitment that can't be easily reversed if it isn't quite right. That’s why, if you’re considering going in for the chop, it’s important to know exactly what you want before you plonk yourself down in the salon chair. Anyone can pull off a bob. However, there are definitely styling tricks that suit different face shapes and textures, so it’s important to take all of that into consideration before going for the chop.

Determine your face shape When you’re opting for a face-framing cut like a bob, it’s absolutely crucial to

consider how your new 'do is going to work with your face shape. If you have a round face, you should opt for a bob that finishes closer to the collarbone to elongate your face. For those with a heartshaped face, make your bob super short to accentuate the jaw line and cheekbones, and if you have a square face, go for a length that sits below the jaw and break it up with a grown-out fringe. And if you have an oval-shape face

– you can take your pick. Consider your hair type Whether or not your hair is thick, thin, curly or straight also plays a part in what style of bob will be most flattering for you. If your hair is thick, you need to keep it longer in order to weigh the hair down. Ask your stylist to slice into it, but refrain from cutting in layers. If your hair is on the thinner side of things and poker straight, you are blessed enough to pull-off the coveted 2019 jaw-length blunt cut with ease. Blessed with curly lengths? Make sure you sit down with your hair stylist before you go in for the chop. Curls are better with layers. Ask your hairdresser to cut your bob wet to dry. This means they get the length while it’s wet, but cut in the layers and shape as the curls start to develop as it dries. Decide if you can hack the aftercare If you haven’t already guessed, a bob is serious business. If you’re the kind of girl that hates the idea of having to style your hair daily but are certain you want a bob, you’ll need to reconsider your hair styling regime. Bobs require a lot more blow drying and heat styling than longer hairstyles do, so swap a conditioner for a nourishing mask to prevent strands from drying out. On top of heat styling, you should also be prepared to start investing in dry styling products such as powders and texturising sprays in order to keep your bob looking fresh and current.

Scientists narrow down Google amassing medical data of millions number of exoplanets A whistleblower who works in Project Nightingale, the secret transfer of the personal medical data of up to 50 million Americans from one of the largest healthcare providers in the US to Google, has expressed anger to national UK newspapers the that patients are being kept in the dark about the massive deal. The anonymous whistleblower has posted a video on the social media platform Daily Motion that contains a document dump of hundreds of images of confidential files relating to Project Nightingale. The secret scheme, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, involves the transfer to Google of healthcare data held by Ascension, the second largest healthcare provider in the US. The data is being transferred with full personal details including name and medical history and can be accessed by Google staff. Unlike other similar efforts it has not been made anonymous though a process of removing personal information known as de-identification. The whistleblower introduces the video with the words: “I must speak out about the things that are going on behind the scenes.” The disclosed documents include highly confidential

outlines of Project Nightingale, laying out the four stages or “pillars” of the secret project. By the time the transfer is completed next March, it will have passed the personal data of 50 million or more patients in 21 states to Google, with 10 million or so files already having moved across – with no warning having

been given to patients or doctors. Among the documents are the notes of a private meeting held by Ascension operatives involved in Project Nightingale. In it they raise serious concerns about the way that patients’ personal health information will be used by Google to build new artificial intelligence and other tools. The notes say that one employee “expressed concerns of individuals downloading patient data – need to make sure

everyone is trained to not be able to do that”. According to the whistleblower, the security fears raised at that meeting, including concerns that the transfer may be in breach of federal HIPAA rules on data privacy, have so far gone unanswered by Google. Project Nightingale is understood to be by far the largest data transfer of its kind so far in the healthcare field. It will cover the entire spread of Ascension, a Catholic network of some 2,600 hospitals, clinics and other medical outlets. The whistleblower also expressed concern that so much sensitive and potentially valuable data was being amassed by one big tech company. Google could go on to use its AI analytics to predict outcomes for individual patients, he posited. This is not the first time that Google has ended up in hot water over its efforts to become the dominant player in healthcare data and analytics. In 2017 the transfer of 1.6m patient records at the Royal Free hospital in London to the company’s artificial intelligence arm DeepMind Health was found to have an “inappropriate legal basis” by the UK’s watchdog on data.

which could host alien life Scientists have redefined the conditions which could make an exoplanet potentially habitable, narrowing down the number of worlds that could become targets in the search for life beyond Earth. For a study published in The Astrophysical Journal, a team of researchers used 3D climate models incorporating atmospheric chemistry to examine the habitability of planets around so-called M dwarf (or red dwarf stars)— which make up around 70 percent of all the stars in the universe. The researchers say this is the first study to examine "3D chemistry" in order to understand how the radiation being emitted by a star heats or cools the atmospheres of rocky planets. For a planet to be able to host life as we know it, scientists think the presence of liquid water is key. This can only occur in what experts call the "habitable zone"—the region around a host star within which the conditions are right for liquid water to exist on the surface. This generally means being far away enough from the star that the water doesn't vapourise from the heat, and close enough that it doesn't

freeze from the cold. In the study, the team decided to focus on planets orbiting M dwarfs—a class of relatively cool and dim stars. These planets are considered some of the best places to look for life outside the solar system.

The difference in this study is that unlike previous research looking at the habitability of rocky exoplanets, the scientists combined climate modelling with atmospheric chemistry and photochemistry—the branch of chemistry concerned with the chemical effects of light— providing intriguing new results. According to the team's analysis, the amount of radiation that these stars give off is crucial to whether or not the planets orbiting it may be habitable. For

example, they found that planets which orbit stars emitting lots of ultraviolet radiation are likely to lose significant amounts of water due to vapourisation. Furthermore, they discovered that many planets which lie in the habitable zones of their stars may actually not be able to sustain life due to the fact that they have thin ozone layers. This means that some planets which were previously thought to be habitable may actually be receiving too much UV radiation to sustain complex life on the surface. The researchers say that the findings could have significant implications in the search for life beyond the Earth, helping scientists to narrow down targets which could be explored further by upcoming technologies such as the James Webb Telescope—scheduled for launch in 2021. This telescope will have the power to reveal intricate details about the properties of exoplanets. "'Are we alone?' is one of the biggest unanswered questions," Howard Chen, study author, said. "If we can predict which planets are most likely to host life, then we might get that much closer to answering it within our lifetimes."

Vehicle checks are crucial Vehicle Checks are Crucial Last week, the DGT ran a special campaign to raise awareness of vehicle standards and how we must all check our vehicles on a regular basis. Automotive technology is advancing at an ever increasing rate, making cars more economical and, more importantly,

decisive contact with the road. They are responsible for ensuring adherence in thrust, braking and lateral sliding. They also ensure that the direction of vehicle travel is as desired by the user and the damping of road imperfections. It is recommended that the groove depth be at least 3 millimetres, despite the legal

safer, However, the average age of the vehicles in 2018 of vehicles involved in fatal incidents was 13 years for cars, 9.7 years by motorcycles and 14.6 years in the case of small trucks up to 3,500 kg. This situation is of great concern to the General Directorate of Traffic, which is why the annual calendar of campaigns includes last week´s campaign dedicated exclusively to the monitoring of the conditions of vehicles on roads. During the campaign, the Guardia Civil traffic department, supported by colleagues from the local, regional and national police, were paying close attention to not only the ITV status of the vehicles, but also the safety elements such as tyres, brakes, lights, and windows. According to the latest study conducted by the DGT, the risk of death or serious injury is multiplied by two when comparing incidents with vehicles 10 to 15 years old, in relation to vehicles less than 5 years old. Considering this relationship between risk and the age of the vehicle, the proper maintenance of all safety elements become an essential activity to combat incidents. The vehicle Tyres - The tyres constitute the only and

minimum being 1.6 millimetres. It is believed that more than a million vehicles, 5% of the total on the roads, are driving with serious defects in the wheels, mainly because they have a tread depth below the legal minimum of 1.6 mm; have irregular wear due to bad suspension or incorrect alignment or have incorrect pressure for the load being carried. In addition, vehicles related to professional use, such as vans, have higher rates of tyre defects. It is necessary to regularly check the cold tyre pressure and the spare wheel, as well as checking for possible air leaks from the valves. The cap constitutes an element of sealing, so its use is essential. Lights - The purpose of vehicle lights is not only to see, but also to be seen, since each vehicle on the road presents an obstacle for others, so the definition of its presence is also significant. So that driving is carried out safely, it is advisable to pay special attention to the use, maintenance and regulation of the headlights, to achieve, on the one hand, enoughillumination and, on the other, not to dazzle other road users. Keep in mind some basic tips: The bulbs reduce their intensity with

use, so they must be changed every 40,000 km. or 2 years. The bulbs should be changed in pairs, because their use is symmetrical in most cases. It is necessary to always keep the lights clean and clear of obstructions. The mandatory use of lighting is described in article 43 of the Traffic and Road Safety Law: 1.- Vehicles that drive between sunset and sunrise, or at any time of day in the tunnels, underpasses and road sections affected by the "tunnel" signal, must use the corresponding lighting. 2.- They must also use lights during the day: a) Motorcycles that drive in any way that is the object of this law. b) All vehicles that drive in a reversible lane or in the opposite direction to that normally used on the road where it is located, either a lane that is exclusively reserved for it or exceptionally open in that direction. 3.- It is also mandatory to use lights when there are meteorological or environmental conditions that significantly reduce visibility, such as in case of fog, heavy rain, snowfall, clouds of smoke or dust or any other similar circumstance. 4.- Bicycles, in addition, will be equipped with the reflective elements that, duly approved, are determined in the General Vehicle Regulations. When the use of lighting is obligatory, the bicycle rider must also wear a reflective garment if they are traveling interurban. Number plate - The number plate must not be obscured or hidden and must be readable from a distance. It may not be tampered with or altered, and the rear plate must be illuminated in times of low visibility. Windscreen - The driver must ensure that the windscreen does not present any damage, since it is a fundamental part in the structural resistance of the vehicle, in the efficiency of the airbag and in the support of cameras and sensors of driving assistance devices. Documentation – You must also carry the vehicle logbook and the technical inspection (ITV) card, as well as the last report from the inspection. The ITV sticker

Last chance extended If you missed out on booking an appointment to exchange your British licence for a Spanish one last month, then the good news is that along with another Brexit delay comes another extension of the deadline. You may remember that in a recent article we gave the official information from the Spanish traffic authority, the DGT, warning that “If BREXIT takes place, the United Kingdom will cease to belong to the European Union, so all traffic agreements within the EU will no longer be valid for citizens of the United Kingdom. Among other things, this means that the licences from the United Kingdom will only be valid for driving in Spain during the first 9 months after BREXIT, provided they are in force.” The DGT continued to explain that if you want to continue driving in Spain, it will be necessary to make an exchange (homologation), renewal or replacement of your permit for an equivalent Spanish

one, and you must surrender the original. The DGT implemented a protocol guaranteeing an appointment for the exchange, if you are eligible, so long as you made the appointment before 1 November. In view of the Brexit extension, that deadline has now also been extended,

giving you another final chance to make the appointment and exchange your licence. To do this you must be a UK driving licence, have habitual residence in Spain

and submit the application before January 31, 2020. In this way, whatever happens, you will be guaranteed an appointment to exchange your licence during the period of 9 months from the BREXIT date. Remember, aside from the fact it is a requirement to exchange your licence, it also makes things easier if you are living in Spain. For example, your Spanish driving licence will contain your NIE, and is therefore considered a national identity document, so you don´t have to carry your passport. In addition, unlike holiday makers, in the event of you being stopped and issued with a traffic fine, you will not have to pay on the spot if you have a Spanish licence, as it links to the national system. So long as the offence is not a serious one you will be sent on your way with a ticket to pay, and you can get a discount for paying promptly. Those driving on a foreign licence risk having to pay on the spot or having their vehicle immobilised

must also be clearly displayed in the upper right of the windscreen (looking out of the vehicle). The driver must also carry their licence. Technical Inspection The correct maintenance of a vehicle contributes decisively to ensure adequate safety conditions throughout its useful life. These safety conditions are periodically verified in the technical inspections. In 2018, the percentage of vehicles involved in incidents with victims, on interurban roads, with the inspection expired at the time of the incident, ranges from 3% of buses, 5% ofcars, 7% of motorcycles, 9% of vans and 10% of trucks up to 3,500kg. The Vehicle Inspection (ITV) stations carried out the review of 25.3 million

vehicles during 2018. Of the total number of vehicles inspected, more than 4 million failed the first mandatory inspection (16,13 % of the total), which means that almost one in six vehicles was rejected for not meeting the minimum safety conditions or for emitting pollutant and harmful emissions into the atmosphere higher than allowed by law. This rejection rate is because during the inspections 33.4 million defects were detected, of which 7.9 were serious (those that automatically prevent a vehicle from passing the technical inspection). The most common serious defects were lighting and signalling (24.1%); axles, tyres and suspensions (21.7%); those related to brakes (14.7%) and excess pollutant emissions (13.3%).

Carrying gas canisters It´s getting cold out, so it might be time to get your gas replaced. Did you know though that there are rules for carrying gas canisters in your car? Firstly, the safest option is to have the canisters delivered to your door. You most likely already have a supply contract with one of the major suppliers, if not a visit to one of their offices can fix that. You should also remember to only allow authorised gas inspectors into your home. If you do want to collect the canisters yourself, you can get them from a lot of fuel stations but remember that they are potentially explosive. Depending on their size and weight, the canisters can be very heavy as they are filled with pressurised gas. At home, care should be taken as to where they are stored, in well ventilated places, away from heat and ignition sources, far away from toxic materials and always in an upright position. In the car, it is equally crucial to take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and

the safety of other road users. Spanish law states that you can carry 2 gas bottles in the car, and they must be carried in an upright, vertical position. You must also take necessary measure to ensure that the canisters are secured in the vehicle and cannot move during the journey. The law also states that when you are carrying gas canisters, it is forbidden to park the vehicle in an underground car park. You should also check with your local supply company for their recommendations for storage and carriage, as gas canisters can pose a major threat if not handled correctly but are perfectly safe if the advice is followed. We sometimes see gas canisters carried on mopeds or motorbikes, this is not permitted as the stability of the vehicle will be seriously affected, and therefore, under the terms dictated by the law, they will not be considered safe.

The difference between Autopistas & Autovías

It is not always clear to many drivers who move through the motorway network, but there are two very different types of high-speed roads in Spain. The two types of roads share a lot of characteristics, but also have subtle differences. Both are motorways, but autopistas (AP-7 for example) and autovías (A-7) have their own definitions. Both have two lanes (at least) for each direction separated by a median, in both the maximum speed is 120 kilometres per hour (apart from the exceptions we will mention), and a minimum permitted flow speed of 60 kilometres per hour, and so if your vehicle is not capable of that speed, you are not allowed on. Both autopistas and autovías do not have junctions which cross other roads, they have fast flowing entrances and exits which join and leave the flow of

traffic and hard shoulders. In addition, autovías and autopistas have service areas, normally no more than two hours apart, at most, to allow you to stop for a break, and, in general their use is restricted to cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles that are capable of reaching at least 60 kilometres per hour on the flat . Neither the autopistas nor the autovías go through urban centres, but border them and go around them as bypasses. The maximum permitted speed of a motorway passing an urban centre is normally reduced. However, the question is not of their similarities, but rather of their differences. The difference, generally, is technical, by which both are denominated differently, as well as a slightly more interesting reason that is historical: the autovías usually have their origin in old roads that underwent a transformation and conversion in the

1970s and 1980s. This is not always the case, but it is usual for an autovía to follow, at least partially and for some of the two directions, the route of an old national road. This means that the autovías can have certain limitations. For example, they may have curves with steeper turning radii and greater climbs on slopes. Also the width of the hard shoulder can be affected and be narrower on the autovía than they are on the autopistas. The lengths of the exit and incorporation lanes can be shorter, and even none existent on the autovías compared to the minimum length required for autopistas. In some cases the autovías can have bus stops on the road itself and not the service road as happens with the autopistas, since on the autopistas it is not mandatory that there is a service route. However, the newer autopistas do not usually have these limitations for the most part, so in practice and increasingly the difference between an autovía and a newly constructed autopista is more in its original design than in its effective function. Another important difference is that, in general, the autovías are not toll roads while many autopistas are. Primarily, to sum up, autopistas are a newer version of a motorway, specifically designed, from scratch, and feature fast-flowing pathways with long curves, and a sterile environment for drivers in order to reduce distractions, thus permitting the speeds to flow more constantly than on an autovía.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Apparently, and I do often subscribe to this theory, international breaks are rubbish and there is never anything interesting to report. Granted, that might be the case if you are an England fan and have become somewhat used to the team easing their way through any qualification campaign that doesn’t involve Wembley, rain and a wally with a brolly. I’d imagine it’s quite dull being a Scot in the international breaks as well as, frankly, unless they expand the Euros to every single European nation you won’t be taking part in this lifetime.

handicapped by having Ryan Giggs in the hot-seat. Despite all that, those countries will probably only get a cursory token glance in this column today because, even though we are scrabbling around a bit for anything vaguely comical, we’re not that desperate - after all, you don’t turn up here each week to read my thoughts on League Two, do you? I’d imagine most of us have had better weeks than Joe Gomez. Gomez will have finished last week on a high, having played the last few minutes of Liverpool’s win over Manchester City

minutes at Wembley in England’s historic 1000th match, maybe even getting a start in Kosovo before heading back fully fit to Anfield to find a way of dislodging Dejan Lovren. For Joe, it didn’t really go that way. One joke that didn’t go down too well with Raheem Sterling saw Gomez with a scratch under his eye, Sterling banished from the team for one game only and Gomez bizarrely cast as the bad guy in the eyes of some England fans. Gomez did indeed come on as a late sub at Wembley, with the game already in the bag for England - but he arrived to

But if you are Welsh or either one of the Irish nations then it’s been quite an exciting time as you’ve very much been in the running, despite the Welsh being

last Sunday. He’d have looked forward to getting himself to St George’s Park, hopeful of having a bit of bantz with the City lads and then helping England qualify for Euro 2020. He would have been hopeful of sneaking in a few

El Plantio 2 Golf Society Seven members competed in El Plantio 2 Golf Society's Medalford held on 12th November. It was nearly an all O'Brien family affair for the prizes, with Mike Williams playing well to claim two of them on offer. Nearest the pins – Hole 2, Janice O'Brien, Hole 5, Mike Williams. Second place, Handicap 11.8, Mike Williams – 13.1 shots. First place, Handicap 10.9, Paddy O'Brien – 12.5 shots.

If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 9 hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact David Swann on 865 779 983 or 648 476 752.

boos. Exactly how the intelligentsia that are the England fanbase quite surmised that Gomez deserved to be booed on to the pitch is not quite clear. After all, you’d probably struggle to hold a coherent conversation with anyone who did boo

him for long enough to understand their reasoning. Either way, it left a bit of a blot on the landscape of England’s excellent performance against Montenegro - so much of a blot that Sterling, who’d already taken complete ownership of the situation by holding his hands up on social media (where else do public apologies take place in 2019?), felt the need to defend Gomez on Instagram himself. The Liverpool youngster then went home injured, missing the trip to Kosovo. As I said, not the finest week off work. England were very good in their 100th match, putting Montenegro to bed by just the seven goals. It was a result Gareth Southgate will have been delighted with, if only as it helped the press move on from the events earlier in the week. Harry Kane, who some people had been suggesting was ‘finished’ and should be replaced by Tammy Abraham was ruthless and helped himself to the classic Kane hat-trick - a tap-in, a poach and a lovely cultured finish from distance. He’s now got more England goals than Alan Shearer, Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney with 31 (32 after Kosovo, I know - spoiler alert), putting him in 6th place in the alltime list which is great, seeing that is where Spurs will probably finish the Premier League season. It was also England’s youngest side since 1959, which is a delightful stat in it’s utter irrelevance to anything at all. Kosovo went all weirdly experimental with Southgate giving Nick Pope a game in goal, Callum Hudson-Odoi taking the obligatory ‘Chelsea youngster’ spot and

Declan Rice being recalled to the starting XI. What did we learn from that? Declan Rice really is overrated, Hudson-Odoi isn’t as good as Marcus Rashford or Jadon Sancho yet and Nick Pope is decent enough. The Poch will have been delighted to see the two Harry’s link-up so nicely for England’s opener, Winksy giving the keeper the eyes before rolling the ball home. Pochettino, no doubt, would be a damn sight happier if they could do something like that in a Tottenham shirt sometime soon. 4-0 probably flattered England a little in the end with the skipper bagging another goal meaning he scored in every single qualification match - let’s see if he can do it in the knockouts this time, eh? Wales have bought themselves a ticket by beating Azerbaijan 2-0 on Saturday with Gareth Bale seen on a football pitch. Always one to endear himself to the Real Madrid fans, Bale said he gets far more enjoyment from playing for his country than his club. Forgive me Gareth, I didn’t realise you still played for Madrid? That’s not a ticket to the tournament, by the way. Merely a ticket to the last game of qualifying - if Wales win that, they are there and not before. Before Northern Ireland’s doubleheader with the Netherlands and Germany, there was talk that Michael O’Neill had killed their campaign by taking the Stoke City job. That’ll explain Steven Davis missing the penalty that would have seen NI beat the Dutch 1-0 and get one foot on the plane then.

Las Ramblas Golf Society There couldn’t have been a closer result in Monday’s ‘best 2 scores from 4 with all counting on the par 3s’. With 100 points and winning on countback were Ron Luffman, Graham Murray, Mike Chapman and Nora Betts. In second place and just losing out on the back 9 it was Nick Campbell, Reg Akehurst, Yvonne Phipps and Hendrick Oldenziel.

correspondentwith a better back nine (and I missed a very short putt on the 18th!) Sorry no ‘photo of Dean available at time of going to print so I’ve included Dick instead. Trevor Pullyblank picked up the bronze medal with 35 points. Just one ‘2’ today which was carded by Pat Cassidy (who went home with more money than the winner!)

It went to countback again in Wednesday’s Stableford. Dean Tracey took first place with 36 points beating a very handsome local golf

Well, with so many of the games this week being close, our winners in Friday’s 6x6x6 won by a country mile! With 87 points it was Alan Douglas,

Richard Connock, Jan Svendsen and Albert who beat runners up Olga Douglas, John Drakesmith, John Dobson and Allen McClusky by a clear 10 points. Por ultimo, for anyone thinking of changing their sport, Don Carter once commented, ‘One of the advantages bowls has over golf is that you seldom lose a bowling ball’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

We fished the 10th and final round of the Winter Series at the El Bosquet Complex B Section on the 12th November. RODS & REELS The 10th round of our Summer Championship was fished on the river Segura at Murcia on the 13th November. It was a good turn out considering the ramp is blocked to cars, and we all need the use of a trolley to get our tackle up and down to the water, and Tony Macmillan has gone one better by building his own trolley to fit on the back of his mobility scooter which worked very well. First on the day was Dave Hutchinson with 16.460kgs, in second place was Mick Hill with 8.020kgs and in third spot was Marlene Hutchinson with 5.040kgs. 1st Dave Hutchinson with 16.460kgs 2nd Mick Hill with 8.020kgs 3rd Marlene Hutchinson with 5.040kgs All fishing the feeder and pellet There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423. Bairstow reprimanded for audible obscenity England’s Jonny Bairstow has been reprimanded and has also received one demerit point after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during the 5th T20I match against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on Sunday. The England batsman was found to have violated Article 2.3 of the code, which relates to “use of an audible obscenity during an international match”.

We drove down the AP7 to our destination for the day which was the sometimes dreaded La Serena golf course, I have to say the course was in very good condition and it goes without saying that the water played a big part in the game the dreaded agua claimed sixty-three balls from our society over the eighteen holes, we had all thrown a Euro each into the pot to try to guess the number of lost balls before we teed off and the winner was John Rush who picked sixty four lost balls. We all returned to the Mini Golf bar close to Quesada’s Arches for our presentation. Onto our winners for the day, our NTPs were on hole three Ineke Stevenson hole nine was taken by Martin Collins, George Holmes took the fifteenth with Kjell Svenson claiming the seventeenth all received a sleeve of golf balls, our runner up in the game by countback was Rob Ashman beating Peter List with a better back nine, both scoring thirty-three points, Rob receiving a bottle of Rioja however our winner today with an excellent score of thirty-seven points and taking home a bottle of brandy was Ineke Stevenson, our soccer card winner Bo Edmund, who selected Liverpool. Martin Collins was unanimously chosen as Captain for next year Martin will take over in January when we will have the Captains drive-in, he will be partnered by his Vice-Captain Peter List along with our President Barrie Hopkinson and his Vice President Ian Allison providing Ian is back up and running after recent surgery. Busters Golf Society is a small friendly group of like-minded people who play on the first Friday of the month , depending on the time of the year we generally have between sixteen and twenty four players

, over the six years since we first formed the society some of our original members have moved on , either returned to their country of origin or have ventured to pastures new, so we are looking for a few more members to swell our ranks, if you are interested in joining our society (it is

free) then please email me Barry Grinsell at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com quoting your phone number and current handicap and I will get back to you within a couple of days. Barry Grinsell, Secretary Buster's Golf Society

Balaton Group celebrate another year

The Balaton Group held their AGM, their eighth, attended by 15 of the current 24 members. Many items were discussed including a proposal to sell of one of their boats which was rejected. A maintenance program agreed for 2020 and the finances were reported to be healthy. A membership drive is planned including an open day during the Easter period. Balaton is a boat share group within SAMM, the Sailing Association Mar Menor, and has four day sail boats on the Mar Menor, three on swinging moorings

at Los Narejos and one in the marina Isla Menores. After the meeting the group plus some wives enjoyed a menu del dia at restaurant Ramon in Los Alcazares where George Noden was presented with “The Parrot”, an annual award for the person who makes the most memorable foul-up of the year.
