18 arrested for Catral kidnap and torture See Main Advert on page 31

Guardia Civil have made a total of 18 arrests across the Vega Baja in relation to an alleged kidnapping and torture which took place in Catral. The 18 are purported to belong to a gang of known drug traffickers. The victim is

believed to have acted as an intermediary for a drug deal that went wrong – bales of hashish which turned out to be clay. The gang is alleged to have paid out almost a quarter of a million euro for what they believed to be 90 kilos of drugs. When gang members opened the packages, they discovered that they had been duped and it is alleged they proceeded to kidnap the victim as revenge. Police sources say that the man was held for a whole night at a house in Catral. There, he was tied to a chair and was subjected to torture until he was able to make his escape when his captors left him alone for a few minutes. The injuries sustained by the man during his ordeal were so severe that he had to be hospitalised for several days.

Guardia Civil had been investigating this particular gang of drug traffickers since April. The kidnapping forced the investigation into the drug trafficking to be temporarily set aside in order to focus on protecting the victim and locating and detaining the alleged perpetrators. For several days, the Guardia Civil mounted an intensive surveillance operation which culminated in the gradual detention of the alleged participants in the kidnapping. Each of them had very specific functions for the confinement of the victim: locating and watching the victim’s house, the actual execution of the kidnapping, the transfer of the victim to Catral and the physical attacks on the victim while he was being held. Health workers speak out Workers in Torrevieja hospital have staged a protest in order to prompt the health department to break its silence. Workers are demanding that authorities from the department of health meet with workers’ representatives in order to discuss the future plans for the Torrevieja Health Department. Workers have requested to meet Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, at least four times so far and been met with silence. Staff at the hospital are desperate to discuss their future employment terms before the publicly owned, privately managed hospital reverts to an entirely publicly run entity later this year. Workers will now stage a protest at the front doors of the hospital every Thursday until they get a response from the Ministry of Health. They said, “We are going to mobilize every Thursday, stopping for 5 minutes at the door of the hospital to demand Continued from page 1 Once the gang members who were directly involved in the kidnapping were identified and detained, officers returned their efforts to identifying the remaining gang members and made a number further arrests. Over the course of the last five months, eight separate raids were carried out in Catral and Almoradí. During the

communication with the Ministry of Health. We just want to be informed and to be part of the negotiation for the peace of mind of workers in this period of change.” During the first gathering which took place on Thursday, a statement was read in which it was indicated that “The Department must decide on the

termination or the concession contract of the Torrevieja University Hospital and the working conditions of the staff in the event that the department is assumed by the Ministry of Health.” Health workers union, CSIF has also joined the protest and has stated that it will support the majority position of the workers.

Police raid Charity HELP brings illegal rave night raises comfort to €700 for Los Arcos homeless patients Police in the north of the Alicante province broke up an illegal rave where over 100 people were found to have gathered to party without masks. The suspected organiser of the event is the son of the owner of the ‘venue’ – a barn on a farm in the area – with the farmer himself claiming no knowledge of the event. The rave was called to a halt by police in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to officers, people had come from far and wide to attend the event, none of whom wore a mask as is required currently in Spain both outdoors and indoors. The organiser is thought to have invited participants to attend through social media. The party stopped when four Guardia Civil squad cars alongside several units of the local police arrived to break up the event. When officers entered the barn, around 40 people were still inside but it is thought that many had already dispersed into nearby fields when it was clear the police were on the way. Reports afterwards suggest that the DJ was from Albacete and attendees came from as far away as Valencia, Almería, Madrid and Zamora. After police stopped the party, officers stayed with some of the revellers for several hours as many had ingested alcohol and were in no condition to drive.

Organisers of the recent charity night in aid of Reach Out at St James’s Gate wanted to thank all of those who attended and supported the event which raised a wonderful €700 for the Torrevieja based charity. Reach Out, which supports homeless people and families living in poverty, will make good use of the donation which, now more than ever, is desperately needed. Organisers wanted to specifically thank DJ Gary Teleng, Si Conway and Richie C for providing entertainment free of charge, as well as Restaurant Taranta and other contributors for donations to the raffle. Maliki, Kelly and Amanda also wanted to thank those customers who attended to support the evening.

After months of lockdown, HELP Murcia Mar Manor’s President Christine Baillie was at long last able to present Pedro Escudero, Maintenance Manager and Maria Dolores, Nursing Director of Los Arcos Hospital with five specialist wheel chairs which enable patents to be taken directly from a bed into a shower. These chairs which are specially designed to be easy to get into and can be pushed into a shower enable patents to maintain their cleanliness with dignity when unable to shower normally. The cost of over €2000 was met from funds that the volunteers of HELP had amassed during 2019 in both the HELP Outlet in Los Alcazares and the weekly car boot sale at the Auto Cine. Like every charity in Spain, HELP has been unable to operate normally during the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic but as restrictions have been lifted so the charity has been able to return to some sort of normality opening up their office and charity shop. If you think you could spare a couple of hours a week and would like to give something to help the people of the Murcia region please contact 968 570 059 or 633 344 129.

Limited space left at Spice Hut Charity night There are a small number of tickets (less than 10, at the time of going to press) left for the forthcoming Spice Hut ‘Curry and Quiz’ charity night. The aim of the evening is to raise funds for two animal charities – Kittens in Distress and Cats n Dogs Aid – in order to help pay vital veterinary bills. Tickets are priced at €12 and the evening takes place on Wednesday September

23rd at 7pm with a delicious meal, as always at the Spice Hut, as well as raffles, a quiz and demonstration. All Covid-19 related safety measures will be in place, including a strict limitation on places available for the event. As this event has almost sold out already, more such events are planned for the future. To secure your place, contact the Spice Hut on 966731063

Orihuela not mobility friendly PIOC, the local political party for Orihuela Costa is calling for the local government to make the coast more mobility friendly for young families, the elderly, frail and disabled. President Peter Houghton said: “If anyone has tried to get around on foot whilst pushing a young child in a pushchair, using a wheelchair, mobility scooter, walking stick or crutches on the footpaths on Orihuela Costa, they will be in no doubt that their needs are neglected. “A parent who tries to walk their child to school with a younger sibling in a pushchair is forced to take chances that risk their lives as most pavements are not wide enough for a parent to hold the hand of a young child never mind hold a child’s hand whilst pushing a buggy or pram.” PIOC is concerned that parents are forced to walk in the road with their children, which is dangerous for them and frustrating for motorists who have to weave around them. There is also concern over, not just the width of the pavements, but the quality of them, many are

broken, have patterns and grooves that can catch people shoes making them trip. Even where pavements are wider, little thought has been given to where access ramps are placed. Many pavements have obstructions such as junction boxes and missing manhole covers which make them difficult for pedestrians to negotiate, let alone a wheelchair or pushchair users. This means that people very often step into the road to get round the obstruction or just because to easier to walk on than the actual pavement. Peter continued: “There seems to be no monitoring of hazards to pedestrians. Shrubs and

bougainvillea overhanging garden walls can makes the pavement totally impassable at that point. Yet even worse, are the hazards that the Council or public bodies purposely insert into the pavements. How many pretty tree lined streets have had their width so reduced that it is impossible to get past them without walking in the road? Then there are wooden or concrete utility poles which are erected in the middle of the pavement causing havoc for the unsuspecting pedestrian. We need councillors to be more inclusive of everyone-s needs and to put the needs of the coast alongside those of the city.”

Discover Orihuela with guided tours Mar Ezcurra, Councillor for Culture, has presented the new Cultural Routes program that will explore Orihuela in the coming months. Under the title "Discover Orihuela" the cultural guides of the city will inform and explain in detail the unique and special places in the municipality. Every Saturday at 11am a new, free cultural tour will begin. 6 POINTS TO A SUCCESSFUL PROPERTY SEARCH

So many houses…. So much to choose from…. Which one would you choose? Do you like traditional? Maybe you prefer modern? There’s so much to think about when buying a property in Spain! Considering these 6 points will help you make a successful start: 1. Whatever it is you’re looking for, it is best to start your property search knowing your budget. Discovering your price range will determine the size of the home and general location. Like anywhere in the world, land does have a value. The closer you are to major attractions, the more valuable the property, and of course vice versa. 2. Does it have to look welcoming? Are you more focused on the aesthetics than what’s on the inside? Spanish properties can be very deceiving from the outside. So don’t write a property off based on whether it has curb appeal or not. Who knows, you may be missing out on a hidden gem! 3. How many bedrooms do you need? For this answer, you need to focus on your own needs. Don’t start thinking about your potential visiting family and friends. You really should be selfish if your budget is not stretching to an extra bedroom that will only be occupied for two weeks a year! Visiting relatives will make do. Even if that means they’ll be sleeping

on a sofa bed for a few days whilst they enjoy their free accommodation with you! 4. How many bathrooms will you need? Usually with a 1 or 2 bedroomed property, you’ll have 1 bathroom. With a 3 or 4 bedroomed home, there’ll be at least 2 bathrooms. 5. Will you want your property to generate an income for you? Homes with guest apartments can be rented out to two families. Or live in one part and rent out the other! These properties can be very versatile especially if you have growing teenagers that want a little more independence! 6. Figure out early on in your property search what is going to be your compromise. Is it size? Amount of bedrooms? A swimming pool? Or maybe the location is going to be where you’d be required to be a little flexible on your wishlist. Remember this…. Anything inside the property can be altered. Updating is easy to do. Putting in a swimming pool… as long as you have the room, is easy to install. One item you cannot change though, is the location! When buying a home you’ll never find a property that meets every single requirement on your wishlist. But you can get close to it if you’re willing to compromise a little. What you’d look for in a home will be different to someone else. It’s a personal choice. However, everyone is generally looking for the same basics... A wonderful home and in a great location! To get a head start with what you’d be looking for in a home, go to www.QuesadaDeals.com for a list of the best area deals!

Guardia Civil locate ‘foot driver’ in prison Guardia Civil had been searching for a man who had been seen in videos shared on social media driving with his feet. The recordings were supposedly made in the month of March in the north of Spain and have since been widely shared on Whatsapp and on various social media platforms. The 31 year old Spanish man was tracked down to a prison in Cantabria. In four separate videos, viewers can see a male driving a vehicle along the pavement in a town, at times driving in the opposite direction of the traffic flow and forcing other motorists to get out of his way to avoid collision. While

A still taken from the video

driving, the man has his feet on the wheel rather than his hands and can also be seen lying down across the passenger seat with no seatbelt on. The videos came to the attention of the Guardia Civil recently and so officers began to make efforts to locate the man. Investigations confirmed that traffic police had stopped a vehicle in mid March in the same area where the videos in question seem to have been recorded. A man, driving erratically, was stopped and refused to take a drug or alcohol test. He resisted arrest and injured an officer in the process. He has been in prison since his arrest.

When arrested, the detainee was wearing the same clothes and distinctive footwear that can be seen in the videos. At the time of his arrest, he was accompanied by another male, so it is now being investigated if the second man made the recordings and whether charges should be brought against him too. Officers analysed the videos and deduced by the radio playing in the car that the recordings were made in March, in the evening time and on a weekend. The man was arrested on Friday March 13th so officers have not ruled out that the videos were made on the same day, prior to his arrest.

Covid shuts San Drunk truck driver calls police Fulgencio sports to ask for arrest centre The Mayor of San Fulgencio and Councillor for Sports, José Sampere, have announced the closure of the municipal sports centre and Nuevo Cañaveral stadium, due to the detection of a positive case among the players of the first regional local football club, Sporting Saint Fulgencio. The local government team has already closed the facilities to carry out an immediate treatment for the total cleaning and disinfection of the facility, as well as the suspension of classes for the Municipal Sports Schools, since they share this training space with the footballers. As reported by the Mayor, "the risk of contagion is not very high, since the player was only present in the friendly match that took place on Saturday, 5th September, although they have stopped practicing sport since and until this week as a preventive measure ”. The player had mild symptoms and is already under treatment. Likewise, the Ministry of Health has activated the relevant action protocol and has notified all the people in his environment who have or could have

come in to contact with him in recent days, so that they take health measures and start the quarantine. "We will be very aware of the evolution of this case and we will wait for any update of the situation," said Councillor Sampere. “The City Council of San Fulgencio wants to convey a message of tranquillity and normality because the health authorities assure us that possible cases of contagion are fully controlled and delimited," the Mayor added. San Fulgencio is one of the municipalities in the Vega Baja with the lowest incidence of Covid-19, counting so far just 10 total cases and two deaths throughout the pandemic, and three active cases in the last fourteen days. The Mayor also thanked people for "the exemplary compliance with the sanitary security measures that the local population is carrying out" but also insisting on the need to continue with the national recommendations "such as frequent hand washing, mandatory mask wearing and respecting the social distance” as measures to prevent contagion.

A truck driver called the Guardia Civil to let them know that he was drunk at a motorway rest stop in La Rioja and that if they did not come to arrest him, he would get back into his truck and probably cause an accident. Guardia Civil reports indicate that the phonecall came at 8.30am on a weekday earlier this month. The driver claimed he had consumed a lot of alcohol and was headed for Bilbao in his truck if the police did not come to arrest him. A squad car was immediately dispatched to the rest stop where officers found a 56 year old Spanish man, with an address in Barcelona, in an obvious state of intoxication, waiting inside his truck. When the officers asked the driver what was wrong with him, he told them that he had drunk a lot of alcohol and that he had to be stopped before he caused an accident.

Once he had calmed down, the man told the officers he had decided to get drunk while driving the truck in order to get arrested and then sacked from the company he was working for. "I want a break, to collect unemployment pay and then retire." He threatened to assault the officers if they did not arrest him. After he spoke to the police, they administered a breathalyzer test and found him to be almost five times the maximum rate allowed for professional drivers. A Guardia Civil spokesperson said, “He

was drinking in the truck, but at least after calling us he had the sense to go to wait with his fellow drivers in the service area because he could have caused a serious accident.” The two breathalyzer tests came in at 0.84 and 0.72 milligrams per litre in exhaled air. The crime of driving under the influence of alcohol with rates higher than 0.60 milligrams per litre is covered under article 379 of the Penal Code and can be punished with either a prison term of between three and six months, a hefty fine or community service of between 31 and 90 days as well as a driving ban in all cases.

Are You An Orphan? If you are currently paying a financial adviser to manage your investments, but never sit down in front of your adviser to review your portfolio, then you are what we would call an orphan client. However good the funds looked when your money was invested, if the markets are not monitored and your funds assessed, then there is a danger that your money is not being managed to ensure the best possible returns. If your current adviser does not offer this service, then you might wonder why you are paying an annual management fee. Many people had endowment mortgages in the eighties and nineties and were told that at the end of

their mortgage, there would be enough money left over for that dream car or holiday. Unfortunately, as the funds were not monitored, most people found they had a shortfall and needed to switch to a repayment mortgage. The above is simply an example of how important reviews of your investments are to ensure your goals can be realised. Seagate Wealth advisers all previously worked for Lloyds Bank and are used to providing their clients with the highest level of service. There are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate? I believe that we offer a unique service to our clients.

We have a fully staffed local office in Benijofar with a back-up admin team, a Client Account Manager and a Relationship Manager. This means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance. By getting to know each client individually, your Seagate adviser can fully understand your situation and this allows us to provide the best financial advice, not just for today, but forever. Do not delay making a decision, call us today. For a free no-obligation review of your investments with a Qualified adviser, call 965 704 338 or email: Contact@Seagatewealth.es

Loggerhead turtle washed up on La Mata beach A dead loggerhead turtle was discovered washed up on La Mata beach in Torrevieja. Reports by environmental watch group ‘Crónicas Naturales de Torrevieja’ said that the turtle’s body was found on September 8th in the early hours of the morning. Experts believe the turtle was a young specimen and its body has now been removed for inspection in order to determine how it died. The loggerhead turtle is classed as a vulnerable protected species. The largest

Albatera truck driver arrested A truck driver from Albatera has been arrested after driving a heavy goods vehicle in zig zags along the AP7 motorway at Tarragona. The driver was taking up both lanes of the motorway and was arrested on Sunday evening at 7.30pm charged with a crime of reckless driving and driving under the influence of drugs. Several drivers alerted the emergency number 112 that a large truck was swerving along the AP-7 motorway. A squad car was able to get behind the truck on the A7 near Cambrils and brought the driver safely to a stop. He underwent roadside drug and alcohol tests and tested positive for opiate, cocaine and cannabis use. The driver spent the morning in court and was released with charges, with the obligation to appear before the judge when called to do so.

hard shelled turtle, the loggerhead comes ashore during the summer months to lay its eggs. The protocol on the southern Costa Blanca asks that members of the public do not approach or attempt to touch any beached turtles – simply call 112 and report the sighting.

After just a few days of the new school year, 15 of the 683 public and concerted centres throughout the province of Alicante have been forced to activate the covid-response protocol due to the suspicion of the first symptoms of the virus in students or teachers. Education officials have confirmed that a total of fifteen centres, 2 percent of the total, have so far reported a situation related to the coronavirus in their classrooms. The vast majority refer to suspected cases. However, some are already confirmed positive cases, after the corresponding diagnostic PCR test, which entails the tracing of close contacts and consequent quarantine or home confinement. Across the country, the Minister of

Education figures incidences due to the covid in 53 of the 28,600 centres and admits that cases will continue to occur, as educational officials in the Community have also declared these days. Prevention Teachers' union delegates emphasise, for their part, the need for Education to insist before the directors of the centres in avoiding any type of meeting between the teachers in the educational centres themselves. The same health protocol contemplates the prevention and priority of telematically carrying out all possible tasks outside of teaching, and the unions urge Education to place as much emphasis on this issue as on not meeting outside the centres.

Spain to test international Radar Covid capability By mid-October, the Spanish government plans to start testing the inter-operability of their Radar Covid tracking app with similar apps currently being used in other countries. The minister for Economic Affairs & Digital Conversion, Nadia Calviño, announced that she hoped the app would soon be live across Spain and that it would help control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Once it goes live in every region of Spain, which should be by the second half of October, the idea is to test its interoperability with existing apps in other countries. Spain, she said, has wanted to be "at the forefront of this kind of experiment and testing", bearing in mind the country plays host to many tourists and it is therefore important to make sure that people from any other European Union country can use the app in their home country too. The minister also mentioned the possibility of "lengthening" the control period of the tracking application, which is currently set at seven days. The app alerts you if you have been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for Covid-19 during the past seven days, but their is talk of extending this tracking period.

How does the Radar Covid app work? The app sends alerts to its users anonymously concerning the risk of exposure and any possible contact with anyone who subsequently tests positive for coronavirus. The app uses the mobile 'phone's Bluetooth technology to detect the risk of possible infection and gives advice as to how to proceed. The tracking system has been developed jointly by Apple and Google and has two main functions: to inform people anonymously of your positive diagnosis and to communicate potential exposure, also anonymously, to anyone you have been in contact with.

Orihuela exhibition marks anniversary of the DANA The Orihuela City Council has opened a photographic exhibition to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the DANA which wreaked devastation across the Vega Baja last year. The exhibition opened its doors on Thursday, 10th September and will run until 8th October in the CAM Building's exhibition hall.

Covid hits fifteen schools across the province

The app keeps a register of all the people you have been in contact with over the past 14 days, if you have been less than two metres apart or have been together for more than 15 minutes. On the basis of this information, the app evaluates the level of exposure risk. If a user receives a positive diagnosis for Covid-19 after being tested, they can then decide if they want to share that information so that "an anonymous notification can be sent" by the app to other users. The app is currently being used succesfully in eleven autonomous regions of Spain: Madrid, Navarra, Andalucía, Cantabria, Aragón, Canarias, Castilla y León, Baleares, Murcia and La Rioja.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, the Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, and the president of the Alicante Provincial Council, Carlos Mazón, opened the exhibition "DANA and the river of solidarity", which will also tour civic centres and social services facilities on Orihuela Costa and districts of Molins, San Bartolomé, Hurchillo, La Murada, La Aparecida and Desamparados. The Mayor has expressed his intention to continue this initiative "in the future with more images from photographers and neighbours so that we can continue to remember this historical event and share it with everyone. This exhibition was framed within a series of events that we had planned to carry out in commemoration of DANA and it has been the only one that has come to fruition”. This exhibition takes a tour of images taken during the days of the meteorological tragedy captured by Rate Bas, Alberto Aragón, Maru Sarabia and the INFORMATION photographer Tony Sevilla, four professional photographers from Orihuela who have selflessly donated their material from those difficult

days. “We are mainly dedicated to storytelling and this one was tough. All stories have a beginning, a centre and an end, The end was more disastrous than we thought and we wanted to reflect it in our photographs,” explained photographer Rate Bas. The photographic exhibition has images, not only of the DANA, but also of the visit of the King on 4th October, the impact produced by this phenomenon in the different print media, images of the wave of solidarity generated by the floods and audiovisual material with a video summary of the effect that DANA produced in Orihuela. The photographer Maru Sarabia said: "I took the camera to capture the happiest moments of DANA and that is what I think we have to stay with, with the good things of every moment." The exhibition hall has been prepared following all the safety and hygiene measures decreed by the health authorities, where a hydroalcoholic gel dispenser has been installed, a disinfectant mat, several signs to keep distances and a QR code to download the virtual brochure. The Councillor for Emergencies has invited "all Oriolanos and visitors to come and see this exhibition and that all those who did not experience this catastrophe live and direct can see an audiovisual selection of those days."

Primark to open four new stores in Spain Cut price clothing chain Primark is set to open another 14 stores worldwide next year, of which four will be in Spain. Associated British Foods, which owns the budget label, says its company financial year ends on 12th September and it expects its profits for the period to be in region of £300 to £350 million (about €334 to €390m) – a considerable drop on that of the previous year, when declared annual profits came to £913m (around €1.02 billion). This is largely because Primark stores were closed due to lockdown and did not reopen in most countries until June. But the shrinking turnover caused by the pandemic has not put the holding company off the decision to open another four branches in Spain, which will bring its national total up to 40. As yet, the location of these new stores has not been revealed. To date, the firm – which was originally founded in Ireland – has stores in the capital cities of the provinces of Alicante (where it also has Elche and Zenia Boulevard), Albacete, Almería, Badajoz, Barcelona, A Coruña, Cádiz, Castellón, Córdoba, Huelva, Murcia, Málaga, Sevilla, Tarragona, Valencia (where it has two – one in

the city and one in Bonaire shopping centre), Valladolid, Zaragoza, Vizcaya province (Bilbao city), Guipúzcoa province (VitoriaGasteiz being the capital), Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (which also has two) It also has stores in the regional capitals of Asturias, La Rioja and Navarra – Oviedo, Logroño and Pamplona - plus Algeciras (Cádiz province), Armilla (Granada province), Camargo (Cantabria, near Santander), Churra (Murcia), Majadahonda (Madrid),, Roquetas de Mar (Almería), Palma de Mallorca, and Santiago de Compostela (Galicia). Associated British Foods says

Primark has made up for lost time over the summer, with the sales leading to a flood of customers – albeit with the correct Covid-proof measures in place, this 'flood' was staggered at the door and numbers inside limited. Since Primark stores reopened, the average purchase per customer has been considerably higher in volume than before lockdown – evidence of 'a certain level of repressed demand', according to the company. By the end of the year, Primark's sales figures are expected to come to around £2bn (€2.23bn) when the firm announces its annual results on 3rd November.

Med leaders back EU sanctions on Turkey Leaders of seven European countries on the Mediterranean have said they are ready to back EU sanctions against Turkey if Ankara shunned dialogue on escalating tensions in the sea.

responded to the repeated calls by the European Union to end its unilateral and illegal activities in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea,” the communique said.

French President Emmanuel Macron hosted the leaders of six other EU states, including Turkey’s regional rival Greece, for a summit in Corsica in the hope of finding common ground ahead of the next EU summit this month.

“We maintain that in absence of progress in engaging Turkey into a dialogue and unless it ends its unilateral activities, the EU is ready to develop a list of further restrictive measures,” the leaders said, adding these could be discussed at the European Council on 2425 September.

Showing again his anger against Turkey under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Macron said before the summit that the NATO ally was no longer a partner in the eastern Mediterranean, and that its people “deserved something” different to the way the government currently behaved. France has strongly backed Greece and Cyprus in a growing standoff with Turkey over hydrocarbon resources and naval influence in the eastern Mediterranean, which has sparked fears of more severe conflict. After talks with the leaders of Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Greece and Cyprus in the resort of Porticcio outside the local capital Ajaccio, Macron adopted a slightly milder tone, saying the leaders wanted to reengage in a dialogue with Turkey “in good faith”. But the final statement of the leaders made clear that sanctions were on the table if Turkey failed to end its “confrontational actions”. “We regret that Turkey has not

The crisis has added to a growing list of tensions between Turkey and Europe, notably over Ankara’s military intervention in Libya, its policy in Syria and a crackdown on opponents of Erdogan at home. “We Europeans need to be clear and firm with the government of president Erdogan, which today is behaving in an unacceptable manner,” Macron told reporters before the summit began.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

He said that at the moment Turkey was “no longer a partner in the region” of the eastern Mediterranean due to its behaviour.

Erdogan’s top press aide, Fahrettin Altun, took a swipe at Macron in a tweet, describing him as a “wannabe Napoleon” on a Mediterranean campaign.

Macron added that Turkey had “intensified provocations in a way that is not worthy of a great state. The Turkish people are a great people and deserve something else”.

The EuroMed 7 is an informal group of EU Mediterranean states, sometimes dubbed “Club Med”, that held its first summit in 2016. Turkey is not a member.

But in a strongly worded reply, the Turkish foreign ministry described Macron’s comments as “arrogant” and a sign “of his own weakness and despair”.

Turkey has sought to join the EU for over half a century, though analysts say the growing rift between Erdogan and the bloc’s leaders has made the prospect increasingly unlikely.

Catastrophic conflict Macron said that the Mediterranean had become the scene of “a hegemonic game between historical powers seeking to destabilise the region”, pointing towards both Turkey and Russia. There are “real risks of destabilisation in the Mediterranean because of threats from Turkey”, said Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, calling on the EU to “use all the means” at its disposal to “avoid a catastrophic conflict for the whole region”. “If Turkey refuses to listen to reason… I don’t see any choice for my European colleagues except significant sanctions,”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who also held bilateral talks with Macron before the summit, wrote in French daily Le Monde. Greek media said the possible sale by France of Rafale fighter jets could be on the table, in a sign of the increasingly strong alliance between Paris and Athens. Adopting a slightly milder tone, Spanish premier Pedro Sanchez said the seven had sent a “clear message” for real dialogue. “We believe this genuine dialogue is possible, we believe it is possible to follow the path of de-escalation,” he said,

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP A wobbly week for sterling, with much of its success, or therein lack of, heavily pinned to progress in Brexit negotiations. The markets took the view that the risk of no deal on these trade talks has increased, which in turn has raised the spectre of additional interest rate cuts or quantitative easing from the Bank of England. However, it won't matter whether the BoE cut interest rates below zero, as the markets are prepared to accept record low returns irrespective of official interest rates. The pound slid sharply against the US dollar and the euro, and hit a one year low against the Aussie too, after reports that the UK government was preparing to reverse parts of the Withdrawal Agreement protocols on Northern Ireland in the event of a no deal. While in reality this may be another bargaining chip, talks have seriously escalated as the EU has threatened the UK government with legal action if it doesn’t ditch its Internal Market Bill. It still looks as if the markets expect a basic free trade agreement to be reached, but they are less certain than they were. While it was a doomy and gloomy week for the pound there were a few bright spots, hitting a six week low midweek and then seeing a brief bounce back Thursday. The RICS house price August survey index rose to a balance of +44 of surveyors that saw prices rising, up from +13 in July. The sustainability of the rebound in the housing market remains in question, as to whether demand can hold up with unemployment on the rise and when the stamp duty holiday comes to an end. The big news was July’s economic recovery. Still miles away from pre-coronavirus output levels, the UK economy grew by 6.6%, the third month in a row it expanded. Hairdressers, pubs and restaurants contributed to growth after they were allowed to reopen at the start of July, but the economy is still 11.7% smaller than it was in February. The BRC retail sales monitor for August also showed sales values grew by 3.9% YOY, up from July’s reading. While the pound didn’t react to the news, it shows retail spending is up, and the Chancellors ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme didn’t divert spending into hospitality and away from the high street.

EUR It was a quiet week on the economic releases for Europe, instead the European Central Bank took centre stage. Ahead of the Governing Council meeting, the Chief Economist Philip Lane, indicated that the value of the euro, specifically against the US dollar, would be a factor in policy setting decisions. There had also been a surprise return to deflation in the August Euroland consumer price inflation figures. So the markets thought that the ECB’s inflation forecast would be revised down, if only a little, given the concerns expressed and the data surprise. The ECB pulled a surprise though. Despite the statement, which highlighted risks to growth and prices from the recent upsurge in new COVID infections across Europe, the ECB’s forecasts revised up the inflation reading for 2021, whilst at the same time suggesting GDP would fall less in 2020, but grow more slowly in 2021 and 2022. The euro has made little sustained progress in either direction against the US dollar, testing lower during the first half of the week, through the Wednesday morning, and then rebounding. The data and surveys released weren’t much help, recording a slightly better Q2 GDP outturn for Euroland than initially reported, whilst August industrial production figures from Germany were far less promising. The euro seems to be testing both boundaries in terms of support and resistance against the US dollar, and it is unclear which will give way first, especially thanks to the mixed signals from the ECB. Mixed signals from Germany was also the only other major point to note in the Eurozone. A week ago Germany was talking about using funds from the EU’s recovery fund to pay for existing spending plans in what was seen as a clear signal to the financial markets that the German government wanted to keep a lid on overall spending. However this week the German Finance Ministry struck a different tone. Deputy Finance Minister, Werner Gatzer, suggested that whilst German fiscal policy should return to “normality”, as his boss Olaf Scholz said last week, normality wasn’t necessarily ‘black zero’, a term coined to describe Germany’s policy of a balanced government budget with no new borrowing.

Alcoi mask invention A mask which changes colour when the wearer has a fever has been created by a textile company in the inland Alicante-province town of Alcoi. Colorprint Fashion, which specialises in printing, dyeing and finishing of fabrics used in clothing and accessories, has been working tirelessly since the pandemic reached Spain to find everyday solutions. “With over 45 years' experience, and with the knowledge and technology needed to develop innovative, practical textile products, we knew we couldn't just sit back when this situation happened – it was time to come up with answers,” said founder and manager Rafael Torregrosa. “All our products are proving very popular, and we hope they will make healthcare professionals' jobs easier, help detect possible

cases of the virus, and contribute to halting its spread.” The reusable masks come in several colours and can be washed and disinfected without their properties being affected, and boast a bacterial filtering efficiency of 98 percent. And they turn white if the person wearing them has a body temperature of 37.5ºC or more. Hygiene masks – not surgical masks – produced by Colorprint Fashion are AITEX-approved, or certified as effective in Covid-19 prevention, and as suitable for reuse after washing, by the Technological Textile Institute. Using the same fabric, Colorprint Fashion has also created wristbands. “It's a comfortable system that allows you to monitor your body

temperature, constantly and in real time, and can be highly practical with, for example, children returning to school,” says Torregrosa. Another temperature-detecting accessory Colorprint Fashion has managed to create is a sticker, or adhesive patch worn on the skin, which allows everyone around the wearer to see instantly whether he or she has a temperature. In public places with a high crowd density, or in hospitals and GP surgeries, for example, they can alert other people to a potential risk – so they know to keep their distance – or, in theory, save a lot of time for nurses: Instead of going round each and every patient with a contactless thermometer, they only need to look at a person to see what their temperature is.

Air Europa flight deal Balearic-based carrier Air Europa has slashed its prices for the next 10 days for flights scheduled between now and June 17 next year. National routes – between mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands – are up for grabs for €19 each way, whilst seats on European flights start at €25 each way. Connections between Spanish airports and north African destinations cost €29 for a single ticket in either direction, and trips to the Canary Islands from the Balearics or mainland Spain cost €35 each way. One-way tickets from Spain to the US cities of Miami and New York start from €99, and for destinations Air Europa serves in Latin America, from €219 each way. Inter-island flights – from Palma de Mallorca or Ibiza to Menorca, for example – start at just €7 for each trip.

The costcut is a bid to get passengers back after the pandemic put paid to most international and some national travel this summer. Deals are available until Sunday, 2oth September and are valid for flights up to and including 17th June, or in the case of longhaul routes, for dates between now and 30th September, 2021. Tickets include a 'flexibility' clause for changing dates, times, departure point or destination between purchase and take-off – these can be altered with no amendment fee payable, a 'hook' used to attract customers who may be afraid of committing

Shop Local

CostaBlancaPeople 15th - 21st September 2020

www.costablancapeople.com

SHOP LOCAL Last week, the Costa Blanca People launched our ‘Shop Local’ initiative, a campaign to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. So far, the campaign has been really well received among local business owners and it is encouraging to see so many businesses becoming advocates for the campaign by sharing the logo, supporting the initiative and voicing their support for fellow business owners in the area. Already, the campaign has had a positive impact with some of those displaying the logo already reporting that they have won new business this week as a direct result which is a wonderful result! We are seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic and believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. With local businesses still reeling from lockdown, this summer has been difficult for us all. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the winter months. Why have we launched this campaign? As the global pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to life on the Costa Blanca, we all need to do everything we possibly can to help our local economy

bounce back stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve launched our Shop Local campaign. We want to engage in partnership with local business leaders to give our towns, commercial centres, retailers, small businesses and charitable organisations a boost. We want to help businesses, shops, restaurants and entrepreneurs the support they need to continue to make the southern Costa Blanca a great place to live, work and socialise. How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal in your social media posts. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open

along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours. Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Making this campaign visible – on your social media (check our our ‘frame’ for your profile picture, search for ‘Shop Local Costa Blanca’ in frame options when you edit your profile picture to add a frame), in your window or place of business will help ensure it works and stays in the forefront of people’s minds. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Why shopping local works Shopping at local businesses puts money right back into the local economy, and by spending money in our local shops, restaurant, café or bar, we can all do our bit to help revive our local economy. Supporting our local businesses

"We have worked safely throughout the pandemic to ensure our customers weren’t without the comfort of TV. Our business was open behind closed doors throughout lockdown to offer technical support to our customers, old and new. We fully support this Shop Local campaign – it’s vital that we all support small business owners at this time, for the benefit of everyone in the community.”

“At La Ponderosa we opened our doors again in May with all the safety measures in place. We didn’t know what to expect, luckily enough the positive feedback was overwhelming from customers appreciating a little bit of normality and friendly, familiar faces in these different, challenging times. We very much support and 100% agree with the shop local campaign, it is the small commercial businesses, offices, bars and restaurants that create a community.”

Shop local, Costa Blanca It is our hope that Shopping Locally becomes a daily practice to grow a stronger community for us all. Across the southern Costa Blanca region, we value our local businesses and understand the impact that every one of our hard-earned euros can have on the vitality and survival of the places where we live. We all know that spending our money locally not only supports our friends and neighbours who run the businesses that make our communities unique, but also the critical public services that keep us safe and uphold our quality of life. Advocates We are still looking for advocates for our Shop Local campaign. To get

involved, all you need to do is display the campaign poster in your business and social media. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal and tag us in your posts so we can share your business with our followers – this applies to all local businesses, not just those who currently advertise with us. Together, we can ensure that our local economy not only survives, but thrives.

WIN €20

“We need to remember that local businesses depend on local trade. This is an important part of the comprehensive services we offer both to our regular clients together with our essential tourist trade.”

“We are simply a friendly honest family business, and in these uncertain times, changing something in our homes can make a huge difference to our state of mind. We are here to help. We fully support local businesses for that personal touch”

creates jobs in local communities. Helping to grow the number of jobs in our local areas makes for a better place to live and work, which then creates a healthy economy for the community here on the Costa Blanca. Small businesses are often run by people who live in or near our local community. As the southern Costa Blanca continues to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people may have missed.

“Shape4Life has been helping our valued clients return to good health and get back into shape after lockdown. Alison Ashton (pictured) is now the personal trainer at Shape4Life. This adds extra value for our members at no extra cost. We fully support this Shop Local Campaign. We welcome new locals to pop in for a free mini trial.” Shirley, Slim4Life • Shape4Life, San Luis

This Week´s Movie Picks Pacific Rim Uprising

Mamma Mia! Here we go Again

Saturday 19th September – Channel 4, 10.00 pm

Sunday 20th September – Channel 5, 7.45 pm

It is 2035, ten years after the Battle of the Breach, in which the inter-dimensional portal created by the Precursors (through which they sent marauding Kaiju) was closed. Former Jaeger pilot Jake Pentecost - son of Battle of the Breach hero Stacker Pentecost - makes a living by stealing and selling Jaeger parts on the black market in the Los Angeles area. After he tracks part of a disabled Jaeger's power core to the secret workshop of fifteen year-old Jaeger enthusiast Amara Namani, both are arrested by the PanPacific Defense Corps (PPDC) after an altercation between Amara's small, single-pilot Jaeger Scrapper and the Police Jaeger November Ajax. A holographic transmission of Jake's adoptive sister and PPDC Secretary General Mako Mori persuades him to return to PPDC as an instructor, with Amara as his recruit.

After 10 years we all should know the Mama Mia! plot and characters. It was refreshing to watch the "fore-story" with new actors, interspersed with the original cast. The constant transitions/fades between 20 years before and present required attention, but was fascinating, eye-riveting and ABBA's music and cameo never fail. Everyone I have talked to, who has seen, it want to go back one more time. (Hint: Don't leave until ALL of the final credits have rolled).

Valencian Bowls Championships gets underway on Wednesday Linea Directa will be sponsoring the tournament for the fifth occasion The 12th Valencian Lawn Bowls Championships, sponsored once again by Linea Directa, gets underway at both Greenlands and La Marina Bowls Clubs on Wednesday. For many competitors this will be the first meaningful bowls they have played since lockdown was introduced across Spain in March. At that time all bowling was brought to a halt and it is only very recently that it has resumed with club internal events and competitions. According to National Director, Bob Donnelly, entries are slightly down on previous years, with many bowlers still reluctant to take part in the competition whilst there is so much uncertainty, but every precaution to ensure the safety of the competitors is being taken and with everybody acting sensibly it should be an enjoyable competition. Tournament Director John O’Brien said that it is sure to be a learning curve for all competitors, with the need to ‘socially distance’ whilst sharing a rink with others, but if everyone abides by the COVID-19 Protocol, which has

been issued to all clubs and bowlers, and which has the approval of local town halls, it will surely be just as successful and enjoyable as always. The tournament get underway at 10am on Wednesday morning with the Mixed Triples competition at both venues and rather appropriately it will the

holders John and Caroline Smyth and Peta Rhodes of the Emerald Isle who get the tournament underway with their preliminary round match in which the National Director, Bob Donnelly, is in the opposing team. Together with Eddie Cowan and Iris Cutting of San Miguel, the threesome should provide stiff opposition for the holders. A mouth-watering quarter final awaits between the holders and perhaps the champions in waiting, Ann-Marie Stevenson, Drew Gerrard and Colin Lindgren, should both triples progress to that stage. On Friday both venues will host

the Mixed Pairs competition before switching to the Ladies and Gents Pairs competitions on Tuesday 22nd. The two blue ribbon events, the Gents and the Ladies Singles, currently held by Peter Morgan and Jacqui Johnston, both of Quesada, will get underway two days later. While Jacqui chose not to defend her title Peter will have a bye in the preliminary, before meeting the winner of the Taffe/Donnelly match in round one. Tie of the preliminary round, two former champions, Martin Foulcer of Vistabella and Colin Lindgren of the Emerald Isle, will meet at Greenlands on 22nd starting at 10am. Matches throughout the tournament are played on a daily basis at both venues with morning sessions getting underway at 10am and afternoon matches at 2pm. However the semi final and final stages will be played at Greenlands only from Saturday 26th through to Tuesday 29th with the presentation ceremony taking place on that final afternoon. Entry to both venues is absolutely free throughout the entire fortnight.

Spain to ban hightariff 901 and 902 numbers Consumer affairs minister Alberto Garzón intends to ban 901 and 902 phone numbers, as well as any others which carry a higher tariff than for a call to a regional landline. Despite public pressure, many companies still use higher-rate or even premium-rate numbers for their customer service departments, which can give consumers quite a shock when they see their phone bills.

This is especially the case with 901 and 902 numbers, given that, at first glance, the caller may not register that they involve a charge at all – free-phone numbers start with 900, which looks a little too similar, and also means those who do not realise the former combinations are higher-rate lines may assume they are cheaper than a regional call or even free of charge. Making a national call from a landline

phone – to anywhere in the country – is normally free of charge, depending upon the telecommunications company involved, but ringing a 901 or 902 number from a landline is typically about 56 cents for a five-minute call plus IVA (value-added tax) at 21 percent. Calling a 901 or 902 number from a mobile phone varies according to the network operator, but is on average about €2.82 plus IVA at 21 percent for a

five-minute call. But as most customers know, they will normally spend longer than five minutes on a call – even though 'hold queues' for Spanish companies in general are not very long, at busy times it can take up to five minutes to get through and then, if the call is a complaint, can take at least another 10 or 15 to resolve. And yet calling a regional number from a mobile phone can cost just a few

cents, or even be free of charge. The situation has become worse since the pandemic hit Spain, given that firms whose customers would normally visit them in person to complain or ask questions were unable to do so during lockdown and are discouraged from doing so even now if they can avoid it, meaning calls to higher-rate or premiumrate numbers have risen sharply since March.

Pay for parents whose kids catch Covid Parents whose children test positive for Covid-19 will be allowed to take time off work with pay to care for them on the same basis as if the employees themselves were off sick – but as yet it is not clear whether this will apply to kids forced to quarantine or who have symptoms but no confirmed diagnosis. Government spokeswoman and Minister for the Treasury María Jesús Montero has said that parents would only be able to take paid 'sick leave' to care for their children when these have actually been diagnosed, although companies would be required to allow them unpaid leave if the kids were ordered to self-isolate due to having been in contact with a 'positive' or where they present signs compatible with the virus, such as a fever. Unions and parents are piling on the pressure for this paid leave to cover quarantine and as-yet undiagnosed symptoms, saying they have no other way of caring for their children but cannot afford to take at least a fortnight off work without being paid. Deputy president Pablo Iglesias – leader of coalition partner Podemos and husband of equality minister Irene Montero – has contradicted the treasury minister and said parents will be given paid leave if they have to stay at home to look after their children for anything in connection with Covid-19, whether or not the child has actually been tested and shown to be a positive case. He points out that parents may be

tempted, or even forced, to continue to send their children to school even in the event of a diagnosis within their close circle or even if they have a fever, unless they have some way of being able to stay at home with them without losing about half their monthly salary. Naturally, where a child is a possible Covid-19 case, nobody else can be brought in to care for them due to the risk this entails – even if somebody else were, in fact, available to do so. And that 'somebody' is likely to be a grandparent, who could well be aged over 65 and therefore a high-risk case themselves. María Jesús Montero points out, however, that if a child has to quarantine or has symptoms, the parent would also automatically have to self-isolate due to having been in close contact with the child – and where employees are, themselves, required to stay at home and away from other people, they are considered to be 'off sick' anyway, so will be paid. She also adds that the decision as to whether or not a person is actively signed off sick – as opposed to calling in sick for a short period due to a brief incident of ill health - is always made by a doctor. Parents being able to take unpaid leave, either being completely off work or reducing their hours, to care for sick children or kids who may or may not be infected with Covid-19 was enshrined in law months ago when the pandemic first hit Spain.

Also, parents automatically have the right to request a reduction in their working hours of up to 100 percent or to take a career break with their job protected – their salary being reduced in line with their shorter working hours – for childcare duties, whether or not their children are unwell. As yet, the outcome of the debate is not clear.

For the moment, paid sick leave for parents is guaranteed where their child tests positive, at least – this may soon be extended to include child quarantine or undiagnosed symptoms in the near future, although as a child's own selfisolation requirement will automatically need to extend to the parent or parents they live with, it may be that the family GP will also sign the parents off sick on this basis anyway.

Full back-to-school procedures have been drawn up by education minister Isabel Celaá, jointly with all regional governments and agreed upon almost unanimously, and Sra Celaá assures parents their kids could well be much safer in the classroom than outside it – stringent protection measures are in place on the premises, which may well be much stricter than those followed in other situations where children mix with social groups and family members.

School reopenings coincide Spain to talk travel with highest spike corridors with UK and Germany

The beginning of the school year in Spain has coincided with the worst coronavirus figures of the second wave of the pandemic. According to data released recently by the Spanish Health Ministry, the total number of Covid-19 cases rose again, meaning that infections spiked again last week, with nearly 9,000 new daily cases. The 14-day cumulative incidence of the virus, which is the parameter most commonly used to compare the epidemiological situation in each country, has risen at the same speed and is now at 230 cases per 100,000 people. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Spain has the highest incidence in Western Europe and almost double that of France, which is second on the list. “We have a situation that is very similar to what we have been observing in previous weeks,” said Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts, at a government press conference last week. Simón argued that the spike in cases is partly due to the fact that more infections are being tracked and detected. “PCR tests are being done where there is the greatest possibility of transmission,” he explained. The health official did, however, recognise that the positivity rate – the percentage of tests that come back positive – “is higher than we would like.” According to the Health Ministry, this rate has reached 11

percent in Spain. “The trend is rising on a national level, but with significant differences between the regions,” said Simón. A few weeks ago, Aragón and Catalonia had among the worst coronavirus figures in the country, but now these regions have some of the best numbers in data points such as hospital admissions. But in other regions, such as Murcia, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, the incidence of the virus has continued to rise, even though these areas started from a better epidemiological situation. Joan Ramon Villalbí, from the Spanish Association of Public Health and Health Administration (SESPAS), highlights other differences between Spain’s 17 regions. “If we compare the number of positive cases with the number of hospitalisations, we see that the number of admissions is especially low in the Basque Country, and in contrast, especially high in regions like Galicia, Castilla y León and Murcia. This appears to indicate that the former is managing to detect almost all cases, even asymptomatic ones, while in the others the chains of contagion are escaping them,” the expert explains.

Madrid, coronavirus hotspot The Madrid region continues to be the main concern, not only because it is reporting figures that are worse than the average in Spain, but also because these numbers continue to rise. According to last week’s report, more

than 20,000 new cases had been recorded in the previous seven days, and in the last two weeks, the cumulative incidence of the virus has risen to 520 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In the second wave of the pandemic, only Aragón has reported a similar incidence rate. Simón said that confining the Madrid region continues to be under consideration as a way to curb transmission, and “celebrated” the fact that this option had been recognised by Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida. On the issue of schools reopening, Simón said that it was a “challenge for all,” and admitted that some of the 28,000 education centres in the country may have to close due to coronavirus outbreaks. On the question of vaccination, Simón said that Spain will follow a system similar to other countries in the European Union when it comes to deciding who is vaccinated first. The health official said that “seniors with prior health issues,” and groups like health workers will be at the head of the list. Simón warned that when a coronavirus vaccine becomes available, which will be in December “at the earliest,” there will only be enough doses for a “small part of the population.” He added that regional authorities and the Health Ministry will begin to discuss how to extend the vaccine “in the most homogeneous way possible” to the rest of the population.

Spain, whose tourism industry has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, is insisting on the creation of safe travel corridors even as the list of global restrictions affecting the country continues to grow. Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya announced that Spain will negotiate with Britain, Germany and Scandinavian countries to open up travel corridors to the Spanish islands (the Balearics and the Canaries) exempting visitors from the need to selfisolate upon their return. Although summer travel has ended in much of Spain, the Canary Islands, located off the western coast of Africa, are now entering their own high season. “Our wish is to restore the tourist flows as soon as possible. It is an extremely important issue for the Canary Islands which, unlike other Spanish territories, have a winter tourism season,” said the minister in Milan, where she met with her Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio. “Opening travel corridors such as the ones we will negotiate with Britain could help them relaunch tourist activity,” added González Laya. According to the Spanish official, talks will get underway with major source countries for winter tourism to the islands, including Germany and Scandinavian nations.

The notion of travel corridors had been floated even before borders reopened following the coronavirus lockdown. Conceived as an essential strategy to shore up international travel to Spain, it was loudly demanded by the tourism industry, which hoped it would help salvage the summer season. But the only travel corridor that was ever created was between Germany and the Balearic Islands. Now, González Laya is taking up the idea again. The minister’s remarks come shortly after London announced a new mobility strategy for some island destinations, including those in Greece, although nothing has been said about the Spanish archipelagos. González Laya said she approved of the UK’s decision to look at territories rather than entire countries when designing Covid-19 measures. The Canaries, while having a lower coronavirus incidence than other parts of Spain, have suffered from countrywide restrictions on travel to Spain issued by foreign governments. In late July, Britain removed Spain from its list of safe countries, delivering a tremendous blow to the Spanish tourism sector by imposing a quarantine on people returning from the country. Other countries gradually began adopting similar measures.

Jamie Oliver’s tip for cooking seasonal greens

With the weather cooling and autumn on the doorstep thoughts turn to more hearty meals packed with nutritious vegetables. But making cabbage, chard and spinach interesting can be tricky. Luckily it's Jamie Oliver to the rescue, as the celebrity chef has shared a very helpful cooking hack on his Instagram page – and everyone is trying it. The father-of-five posted a vibrant photo of his green veg, writing: "Who's making the most of their seasonal greens [heart emoji]. Cavolo nero, cabbage, Swiss chard and spinach are great wilted and dressed with a

touch of lemon juice. What's everyone cooking up tonight?" So all we need to do is wilt the vegetables down in a pan and add some lemon juice! Jamie's followers also shared some of their own tips for using seasonal greens. One fan asked how to make kale less chewy in salads and another follower replied: "For salads, you have to massage it before use to tenderise. Or I sauté it with garlic and use it in my grilled cheese or frittatas." There was more advice, with a second follower adding: "You need to remove the leaves from the stalk. Hold the top and pull

the leaves down toward the bottom. They come off easily. You may have tried to eat all of it!" A third shared their recipe too, posting: "In fact, you should eat all of it! Just cut and chop the stalks and let them steam in a little butter with salt, maybe some turmeric and almond slices; keep stirring and, when they're nearly ready, add the leaves - wilting occurs of its own accord. Never, never through those stalks away!" And one fan revealed: "In Poland, we have amazing soup made of chard. It's delicious and I'm making it tonight."

World’s longest Wotsit... The world's biggest Wotsit has been created, becoming the longest puffed corn snack on the planet. The whopping treat measures 10.66 metres (35ft) and took a team of eight two hours and 29 minutes to create. It was baked at the Walkers factory in Leicester which, two months ago, saw 28 of its workers test positive for coronavirus. The achievement proves, with record-breaking flare, that the site is back in business. Announcing the news, Walkers spokesman Wayne Rowland said: “When the team called me up and suggested this I couldn’t believe it … it’s not often you get briefed to make the world’s biggest Wotsit.

“We’re going to get it mounted and display it on the wall at the factory!” To land the world record title, the snack had to be at least 10 metres long, yet stay the same width as a normal Wotsit Giant. Weighing in at 250 grams, it is equivalent in length to 164 regular Wotsits Giants. The jumbo crisp had to be baked by hand as it was too large to fit into the factory’s ovens. Paulina Sapinska, an adjudicator for Guinness World Records, said: “We’ve seen a lot of size-inspired food entries and attempts before but never have we seen anything quite like this. “It’s not every day you see six people having to hold up a single snack.”

New cookery We've been eating show for Nigella McDonald's fries the wrong way for years

Nigella Lawson has a new cooking show coming out on BBC Two. The new show, Nigella'sCook, Eat, Repeat, will see the TV chef and cookbook author sharing the "rhythms and rituals of her kitchen through a multitude of delicious new recipes that make the most of her favourite ingredients." There will be six 30-minute episodes, plus an hour-long Christmas special. Dishes that Nigella will whip up include an indulgent Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake, a luxurious Crab Mac 'n' Cheese, and a life-affirming Fear Free Fish Stew. As well as teaching us how to make her delicious food at home, during the series,

Nigella will also spend time explaining where she finds inspiration for her recipes. “More than just a mantra, cook, eat, repeat is the story of my life”, says Nigella. Back in February, Nigella also announced that she was releasing a brand-new cookbook, also entitled Cook, Eat, Repeat. It's due for release in October, and is more than just a collection of delicious recipes. It will also include essays from Nigella. Alongside a sneak peek at the book’s cover, Nigella explained what this book is all about, and even teased some recipes that can be found in Cook, Eat, Repeat. Erm, Cherry and Almond Crumble anyone?

McDonald's is one of the most popular fast food chains across the globe - and even here in the Southern Costa Blanca its restaurants and Drive-Thru’s are prominent. And on your next trip to the fast food chain, you are being warned not to eat your fries wrong. Yes, you see, apparently we have been eating our fries with ketchup wrong for years and now we have learned the correct way. Fries are a staple order for many Maccies fans, capable of filling out a meal to ensure you're full. Alongside Big Macs and McFlurries and cheeseburgers, fries are the most commonly ordered food at branches of the fast food chain. So you would be forgiven for thinking we have been consuming them correctly. But not so fast.

You see, apparently, the flap on your McDonald's fries carton - you know, the iconic red carton with the yellow 'M' on it - can be used to store your sauces. If you're a ketchup fan, or maybe a BBQ sauce aficionado, this is an utter gamechanger. The takeaway hack has been retweeted nearly 200 times and liked by 485 people. "Did y’all know the flap on your fries box actually has a purpose?" he wrote on Twitter. This is where you can squirt you sauce for handy dipping. “Order your chips without any salt because then we have to make a fresh batch of fries," a fast food employee recently revealed, to give you the chance of the freshest fries. “We also have to clean out the tray that the fries are stored in to make sure no salt gets on them.”

Noom craze hits expats A new weight loss app launched in the US is now making waves across the Atlantic in the UK and is now catching on with expats here in Spain. Noom, is based on behavioural insights into weight loss and nutrition, and says it is rapidly growing in the UK with over 50,000 people signing up per month. The surge in sign ups is, according to NOOM, because it promises to help people lost weight and keep it off for good. The app has had over 50 million downloads in total as people ditch traditional diets and calorie counting to shift some pounds. Of course, once the craze hit the UK it wasn’t long before expats in Spain heard about it from friends and family and wanted to find out for themselves. Noom is designed by doctors and psychologists to help you change the way you think and feel about what you eat, and how you exercise, so you can develop healthier habits. It is said to be like having your very own personal trainer, nutritionist and health coach all in one with access to everything all available on the app. It also encourages eating real, whole foods and recommends more nutrient-dense meals and snacks as often as possible.

Noom aims to eliminate the stress and worry of believing that losing weight and staying fit and healthy is a struggle. The Noom plan says it takes just three steps to get started: First, take a quiz and receive a customised plan, then log what you eat. The biggest mistake we have all made while in on lockdown is having access to food in our fridge and cupboards 24/7least this will give members some

stability back to their eating patterns. Secondly, get a personalised calorie allocation and learn to balance foods. Sometimes we can be unsure of what food groups work best for our bodies. The structure of the plans in place from Noom means members can hear from other users too their findings and which nutritional foods work best for different

people. Thirdly, daily personal coaching and real-time support. Support can go a long way and Noom has promised that they offer support and coaching with their members throughout the journey, making every step that little easier to get to your preferred weight/ fitness. Noom helps you identify and change the habits that have been holding you back. Noom is a 16-week healthy foundational course focused on behaviuor change that will help you learn, practice and master healthy habits. Think of the Noom app as your virtual, interactive classroom. You’ll receive daily lessons with tips, challenges and strategies to help you start taking action right away. After completing the 16 weeks, you’ll have the option to continue on to part 2 of the program, which is designed to enhance your healthy habits and make these behaviours your new normal. If your goal is to lose weight and keep it off, losing a lot of weight in a short amount of time is not realistic or healthy. Noom believes in making small changes each day to help you lose weight and develop healthier habits that you can take with you throughout the rest of your life.

Cerave hits Spanish drugstores Why are they so unkind? My husband and I retired to Spain. We joined an Amateur Dramatics group a year ago, and loved it immediately. The people there are lovely, and we got the chance to sing in the chorus. However, there is one couple who at first seemed very nice, but are now displaying jealous behaviour. They were ok with us until my husband was picked for a main acting role. I was also chosen as one of the lesser characters. The roles involved solos. All our friends at Am Dram were equally happy for us, except for the aforementioned couple. Since then, we have endured digs and sly comments at weekly rehearsals often voiced in loud comments to the whole company. We tried to ignore the behaviour at first, but the third week at rehearsals, one of them tried to muscle in with a part for themselves – making a solo song, a threesome! The director was having non of it, but the bitchyness is continuing, and my husband was even asked to bow out with feigned illness from one of these people! It does seem as though this couple have had their noses put out of joint a little. Have you asked other members of the group whether this is typical behaviour? As your director brushed aside their attempts to sabotage your performances, it could be this couple are well known for it, but I do agree with you that it is unacceptable behaviour, the likes of which belong in a children’s playground. If the snide remarks continue – I would say you have a perfect right to respond to such comments and ask these people what the reason behind these comments are. Do it in front of the group, as they have done. You could say something like, ‘do you have a problem with us doing these roles (and use their names). Up until now, you haven’t fought back, so I would suggest a short sharp retort – that should sort it out. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. When you think of the most enviable skincare items on the market, you probably think of luxury brands with high-end price tags, like Jennifer Lopez’s favourite $300 La Mer Cream. But what if we told you that the most wished for night cream on Amazon isn’t from a fancy department store, but rather, your local pharmacy? Allow us to introduce you to Cerave’s Skin Renewing Night Cream now available at Spanish drugstores as well as on Amazon. Developed with the help of dermatologists, the budgetfriendly cream sparked the interest of shoppers thanks to its powerful overnight formula and quickly earned the number one spot on Amazon’s ‘Most Wished For Night Creams’. The list, which

updates every 24 hours, tracks the products most often added to both wish-lists and registries. This cream is developed for overnight application when your skin's natural barrier is most receptive. Like all of Cerave’s products, it contains 3 essential ceramides that help protect the skin’s natural barrier so it can lock in moisture. Of course, the hydration doesn’t stop there: It’s also packed with hyaluronic acid, a gentle humectant that attracts water to the skin without making it oily. Not only does this ensure your skin remains adequately moisturized, but it can also delay skin thinning, itching, and the overall aging process. To round out the fragrance-free formula, the night cream contains

niacinamide. Also known as vitamin B3, this star anti-aging ingredient reduces the appearance of enlarged pores, lightens dark spots, smooths wrinkles, firms the texture, and brightens skin. Plus, the quickabsorbing cream uses patented controlled ingredient release technology for 24-hours of continued hydration. Beyond giving your skin a daily dose of anti-aging action, it’s also non-comedogenic - meaning it won’t clog pores - and works with all skin types, including oily, combination, and sensitive. Reviewers say the formula doesn’t leave behind oily residue, so you won’t have to worry about it staining your pillowcases or bed sheets as you sleep. Not to mention, it actually leaves your skin feeling unbelievably smooth. What are you waiting for...

Eye scans to use AI to diagnose brain diseases Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s could be diagnosed from simple eye scans performed by high street opticians thanks to a new NHS artificial intelligence (AI) project. Newcastle University is working on the project with medics at North East hospitals as part of a national £50 million boost to use AI in a range of health schemes. Early diagnosis in progressive neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, which affect more than one million people in the UK, is important, so speeding up the process could be crucial. Anya Hurlbert, professor of visual neuroscience at Newcastle University, is leading the Octahedron project. She said: “The retina at the back of the eye is basically an outpost of the brain and the only part of the central nervous system we can see directly from the outside. “We know that in Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease the retina is affected.” Very detailed images of the retina can be captured by optical coherence tomography, or OCT scanning, which is

quick and cheap and increasingly available at high street opticians. Further analysis of these scans will now be developed with the use of AI, to recognise signs of neurological disease. Prof Hurlbert said: “The aim of the project is to use NHS data to teach computers how to detect early signs of neurological disease via retinal imaging. “Ultimately, the project will help to catch those at risk earlier, before other symptoms develop.” Charlotte Allen, from Durham, who lives with Parkinson’s as a patient and carer, said: “I think this study to me is extremely important being able to spot Parkinson’s earlier – that is an amazing thing to think about.” Speaking about the £50 million AI boost for the NHS, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “AI has huge potential for transforming healthcare and freeing up medical professionals’ time – these awards are just the start of an exciting pipeline of new technology that will identify new ways to diagnose, screen and treat illnesses ranging from dementia and sepsis to antibiotic resistant infections and problems in pregnancy.”

New supercharged exercise bike A few days ago, rumours began to circulate that Peloton had some new launches up its sleeve, and it appears that those murmurings were correct – the company has just revealed a pair of new devices for interactive home workouts: a high-end exercise bike called the Peloton Bike+, and a more affordable new version of the Peloton Tread treadmill. These new additions mean there are now four machines in Peloton's lineup, at different price points to make interactive workouts available to more people. The original Peloton Bike went on sale at the reduced price of $1,895 / $2,495 CAD /£1,750 / €2,145 in the in the US, Canada, North America, and Europe from 9th September. That's a hefty discount from the current price, and puts it in line with a regular premium spin bike. The new Peloton Bike+ will go on sale for $2,495 / £2,295 / $3,295 CAD / €2,690 at the same time, and includes several hardware and software features requested by users. There's a new 23.8-inch rotating HD touchscreen,

which means you don't have to load the Peloton app on your TV when you want to switch from cycling to floor exercises, plus a four-speaker sound system to make classes more immersive. The new Gymkit feature lets you pair an Apple Watch with the Bike+ with a tap, and Auto Follow automatically scales the bike's resistance for you. Run together The new Peloton Tread will be available to buy in Europe from 26th December (just in time for New Year's resolutions) priced at £2,295. Runners in the US and Canada will be able to pick one up early in 2021 for $2,495 / $3,295 CAD, and it will be available those in Europe a little later. The new Tread is essentially a streamlined version of Peloton's current treadmill, with a smaller 23.8-inch HD touchscreen, integrated speakers rather than

a soundbar, and a smaller footprint. The existing Peloton Tread will be re-branded the Peloton Tread+, and will be available in the US only for $4,295. "Our goal is to be the go-to at-home fitness solution for as many people as possible," said Peloton’s CEO and co-founder John Foley, "and with these new product launches, we’ll be able to offer access to Peloton’s best-in-class fitness content at various price points, depending on what consumers are looking for, especially in a world where people are increasingly working out at home.”

Summer Figures Released During the months of July and August, 202 people have died on Spanish roads, 13 fewer fatalities than in the same period last year, which represents a decrease of 6%. The reduction has also occurred in the number of fatal accidents (-7%) and in hospitalised injuries (-8%). However, there have been 82.8 million long-distance trips on our roads, with an average of 1.3 million trips a day, which represents a decrease of 9% compared to the trips that took place on the road. last summer (91.2 million). The decrease in traffic has been greater on weekends than on weekdays and trips have been shorter, many of them one day or weekend. In July there were 40.2 million longhaul movements, down -7% compared to July last year. In August there was also a reduction of -11% in movements compared to the same month of the previous year. Specifically, in August, 42.6 million trips were registered. Regarding cross-border traffic, there has also been a reduction of 25.1%. The data was presented by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who has been accompanied by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Isabel Goicoechea and the Director General of Traffic, Pere Navarro. Grande Marlaska has pointed out that the data on deaths from traffic accidents are never good, because behind each victim there is a drama that changes the lives of the person and their relatives, but it is a reality that this summer there have been fewer deaths than the previous summer, thus reaching the lowest death toll in the entire historical series.

During the month of July there were 105 fatal accidents in which 114 people died, 3 deaths less than the 117 registered in July of last year. In August, there were 80 fatal accidents in which 88 people died, which means 10 fewer deaths than in the same month of 2019. It is the August with the lowest number of deaths in the historical series. During this month there have been two days with 0 deaths. “ We had some concern that the pandemic, the state of alarm and the confinement had a reflection on impulsive driving and consequently an increase in accidents, but the data for this summer seem to indicate that driving has normalised, although we cannot lower our guard,”said the Minister of the Interior. According to Grande Marlaska, “the behaviour of traffic in the summer of 2020 has been conditioned by the health situation, the coronavirus and its effects on tourist and economic activity have led to a reduction in long-distance trips of -9%. This reduction has facilitated traffic management without there having been significant retentions in the summer departure and return operations”. Multiple accidents: During this summer there have been 15 fatal accidents with more than 1 deaths, so that 8% of the accidents have caused 16% of the deaths. By type of road: 76% of the deaths occurred on conventional roads, specifically 153 people (+3), which represents an increase of 2% compared to last summer. There have been 49 deaths on motorways, 16 fewer than in the summer of 2019.

By means of travel: Compared to the previous summer, the number of deaths has been reduced in all means of transport except for pedestrians and mopeds, which have increased. The number of deaths in passenger cars this summer was 92, the lowest figure in the historical series. Faced with this upward trend in the number of vulnerable road users losing their lives, the Minister of the Interior asked the DGT to draft a reform of the Traffic Regulations to improve the protection of this group and whose consultation process is scheduled to open in October. By type of user: Of the 202 deaths, 145 were drivers (72%), 35 passengers (17%) and 20 pedestrians (10%). By type of accident: The road departure continues to be the accident that has generated the most fatalities (47%), with 95 deaths, followed by the frontal collision (19%) with 38 deaths. By age: The deaths this summer compared to 2019 have decreased in all age groups except in the group between 15 and 24 years old, which have gone from 23 to 38 deaths (+15) Safety systems: 27% of those who died in passenger cars and vans did not use their seat belts (28), the highest percentage in the last 10 years (20% in 2019). With respect to the 9 cyclists who died, 2 did not weara helmet. Nor did 1 of the 6 deceased users of a moped or 1 of the 49 deceased motorcyclists. By Autonomous Communities: Compared to last summer, the Autonomous Communities that have registered the greatest decreases have been Catalonia (-16) and Community of Madrid (-4)

Children on Motorbikes We are already aware of the importance of ensuring children are carried in cars in the correct manner, but what about when it comes to carrying children on motorbikes? If you ride a motorbike, so long as you are old enough, have a full licence and the vehicle is correctly fitted with the appropriate equipment, you are permitted to carry a passenger. You are also permitted to carry children as passengers, but there are some restrictions to ensure their safety. Firstly, you, the rider, must be over 18. The child passenger must be over 12, although there is an exception to the rule of age, as a child of 7 or above can rise as a passenger being driven by their parent, guardian or person authorised by their parent or guardian, provided all other requirements are met. Height is also important, as if the passenger´s feet don´t reach the footrests correctly, they cannot be carried. The passenger must sit on the rearmost seat, which must be designed

to carry passengers. In no case is it permitted for a passenger to sit between the driver and the handlebars of the motorcycle or moped, which also applies to bicycles incidentally. Depending on your own insurance policy, you may also need additional cover in order to carry passengers, so check our policy before you do. The passenger, like the rider, must wear an approved motorbike helmet and gloves are advised.

Opportunities for Professional Drivers

at the same time, this creates job opportunities for some young people, which is why the age of access to these permits has been lowered, also taking into account the possession or not of the CAP, in its different modalities, to lower the age of access to professional permits more or less. Finally, also relating to professional drivers, Annex IV has been modified to allow, although studied individually and on a case-by-case basis, the possibility of driving with adaptations in the case of the locomotor system previously strictly prohibited. The introduction of new technologies - for example, the automatic transmission in almost all heavy vehicles - and the improvement of prostheses and adaptations have made it possible to allow, after an individualised study, driving with this type of adaptations.

Other changes In addition, the reform has introduced other modifications. For example: The exam time in the theoretical test has been extended, since when introducing videos in the questions it was necessary to extend the time depending on the length of the video. The percentage of error allowed in the applicants' responses has also been clarified, stating that it will not exceed 10% of errors. In the practical motorcycle exam, it has been specified what garments are considered "the appropriate equipment" with which the applicant must appear, to avoid doubts about which are the mandatory garments in the exam.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) plans to approve a modification of the General Drivers Regulation that will mean the transposition of Directive 2006/16 of the European Union into legislation, with several interesting novelties, especially for professional drivers. The first change will mean that vehicles weighing between 3,500 kilos - the current limit - and 4,250 kilos can be driven by holders of a category B permit, a normal car licence, with the increase in weight due to its conversion to alternative energies, due to the higher weight of the batteries. Thus, it allows vehicles that are transformed to adapt to cleaner and more sustainable mobility to continue to be driven, through the national territory, with the B permit that is more than two years old, although always without a trailer. Likewise, the minimum age required to access permits from C, the so-called professional permit, is lowered. This responds to a need for harmonisation with Europe and to respond to the needs of the population and companies. On the one hand, the employer and professional associations had requested this reduction in age, in order to cover their driver needs;

Big car technology changes for the next decade While the look and feel of our cars has changed in the past 100 years, the way we drive them hasn’t. But fundamental change is coming. In the next decade, not only will the way they’re powered and wired have shifted dramatically, but we won’t be the ones driving them anymore! Some cars already have basic automation features, but the automotive experiments being undertaken by the likes of Uber and Google make up a minuscule proportion of the vehicles on our roads. By 2030, the standard car will evolve from merely assisting the driver to taking full control of all aspects of driving in most driving conditions. This widespread automation, together with the electrification and increased connectivity of both the car and society, are set to shake up the car industry in a big way, affecting everything from the way cars look and feel, to how we spend our time inside them, and how they get us from A to B. The first major difference we might notice between today’s cars and those of 2030 are their names. Just as Apple and Samsung have taken over a mobile phone market that Nokia and Blackberry once dominated, Tesla, Apple, Dyson, and Google could become the most recognised automotive brands of the future. They’ll likely look a lot different too. From the outside, the large air intakes and front grills that cool our combustion engines will no longer be needed, while wing mirrors will be replaced with cameras and sensors. Windows could be larger to allow liberated passengers to enjoy the view, or near non-existent to provide privacy. The Mercedes-Benz Vision Urbanetic demonstrates these radical new looks with a modular vehicle that can switch bodies to either move cargo or people. Car interiors will be much more flexible, some allowing customisation of colour, light, privacy, and layout at the touch of a button. Volvo’s recent 360c concept car envisages a multi-functional space that can transform into a lounge, an office and even a bedroom. Sun visors will become a thing of the past, with smart glass allowing us to control the amount of entering daylight. The Mercedes F015 doors even have extra screens that can function as windows or entertainment systems. Many cars will be fitted with augmented-reality systems, which will superimpose computer-generated visualisations on to the windscreen or other suitable display areas, to ease the passenger’s nerves from relinquishing the wheel by showing what the car is about to do. Drivers will be able to communicate

with their cars through speech or gesture commands. In high-end models, we may even see some early versions of braincomputer interfaces, which would associate patterns of brain activity with commands to control the car or entertain occupants. Similar technology has already been used to control prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs. The ever-growing internet of things will become central to how our integrated cars move us around and communicate with the outside world. Sensors designed to recognise and communicate with upgraded road signs, markings, networks of cameras, pedestrians, and other vehicles will allow cars to synchronise their movement, minimising fuel consumption and improving traffic flow. Cars will also be able to help authorities maintain road infrastructure, for example with tyre sensors that notify them of deteriorating road conditions. When humans choose to take the wheel, technology will warn drivers about impending collisions with other road users, and attempt to avoid them. Improvements in thermal sensor technology are likely to enable cars to see far beyond the illumination range of car headlights. If sufficiently standardised and legislated for, these technologies should substantially reduce the number of road accidents – albeit probably after an initial spike. While rural drivers will probably still own their cars, cities may move away from car ownership to the use of ondemand vehicles that take the Uber model to the next level. In Moscow, 9m of these journeys are already made daily, more than 30 times higher than at the start of 2018. Fuels of the future Multiple countries and cities have

announced upcoming bans on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, many by 2030. Older vehicles will still be on the road, so petrol stations are unlikely to disappear by this date. However, carmakers are already focusing more and more on vehicles that will support the fuels of the future. Precisely what that future will look like is unclear. Uncertainty over whether currently popular hybrid cars will be included in vehicle bans may discourage businesses and consumers from investing too much in this path. Fully electric vehicles only make up 2 percent of the global market right now, but as their price drops below that of petrol cars by the mid 2020s, their market share will surely balloon. By how much depends on to what degree their as yet limited range and charging time can be improved, and how much governments invest in currently patchy electric charging networks. We expect fully electric vehicles to at least be a viable choice for a wide range of drivers by 2030 – but unforeseen groundbreaking technological developments could easily change the future of vehicle fuel. For example, scientists are working hard to solve the production and storage difficulties that limit the potential of clean, fast-fuelling and long-range hydrogen-powered vehicles. The year 2030 might not seem too far away, but a decade is a long time for technology to change. In 2008, the first iPhone had only just been released, and climate change was a background issue for governments and media. Now, technology and environmental discourse are changing at an unprecedented rate. So don’t be surprised if you look back at the cars of today in a decade’s time and wonder how we ever got by.

TRANSFER CHAT BY CHRIS DARWEN ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

For those of you foolish enough to believe that the return of the Premier League football a mere 40-odd days after the end of the Premier League season slowing down the transfer rumour mill, think again - trust me when I say there is something for everyone in this lot. Manchester United are slowly getting the impression that Borussia Dortmund are not that keen to sell them Jadon Sancho so are currently working their way back through old text messages to see who else they once fancied. Whilst doing this, they remembered that they once gave a much younger, less damaged by Barcelona, Antonie Griezmann a smile and a wink in the hope the French international might be interested in trading Madrid sun for Manchester rain. He didn’t then but now, three whole years later, Griezmann might be tempted given that Lionel Messi isn’t going anywhere for another year and, if anything, Messi would much rather play upfront with Inter’s Lautaro Martinez instead of Griezmann. United, with £120m they are desperate to spend on someone, are keen to make it happen. And, if they cannot get Griezmann then they might have a quick look

around who else is keen to depart La Liga and end up signing Gareth Bale instead. Yep, high-class scouting going on at Old Trafford once again. Liverpool are equally not averse to doing business with the Camp Nou. They have set their asking price for Gini Wijnaldum at a mere £15m, which feels bizarrely low but what do we know? Missing that penalty at Wembley seems to have completely done for Rhian Brewster who is being touted out at £20m, a price that has got Dean Smith at Villa hot under the collar. Jose Mourinho does not want strikers who are scared of Harry Kane joining the club - which seems like strange comment unless there is an episode of ‘All or Nothing’ coming up that unmasks the Spurs number nine as the Mafia don of White Hart Lane. We can only presume that Danny Rose didn’t get the answers he wanted from Jose as he is being linked to a random move to Genoa of Serie A. Chelsea still want rid of Kepa but no other teams seems that keen to waste £50m+ on a keeper utterly bereft of self-belief. Frank Lampard will tie up a £20m deal for Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy either way and then switch his focus to flogging Bakayoko, Drinkwater, Loftus-Cheek and anyone else that will help fund a move for West Ham’s Declan Rice.

Arsenal have spent most of the summer pining after Atletico’s Thomas Partey and not much has changed. Mikel Arteta is all too aware that they might be improving but there is only so far a midfield of Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny is going to get you. Speaking of which, he’d be very keen to pass off problem child Guendozi to PSG and take perenially-linked-to-theGunners Julian Draxler in return. Emiliano ‘it took ten seasons to become an overnight success’ Martinez hasn’t been given the guarantee of being Arteta’s number one after a couple of decent matches at the end of last season so is keen to hop it, probably to Aston Villa. Arteta is already lining up Brentford’s David Raya as his replacement - all in all a good week for Arsenal’s new ‘manager’ which was being passed off as a ‘promotion’. Chris Wilder spent the last week walking around in a dodgy sheepskin, kicking tyres and channelling his inner Arfur Daly if you believe what he was saying - even so, Sheffield United had a decent week signing two young wingbacks from Derby and snapping up Oli Burke from West Bromwich Albion. John Stones really isn’t taking the hint at Man City and plans to stick around fighting for his shirt - they very same shirt Peppy G is still keen to give to Napoli’s Koulibaly. Wilf Zaha’s winner at the weekend are unlikely to put him off moving from

Palace, meaning the very random list of PSG, Monaco and Borussia Dortmund could still do a deal at the right price. Uncle Roy is lining up Sassuolo’s Jeremie Boga as his replacement for when the inevitable happens. Hodgson was also reunited with Michy Batshuayi who will challenge Christian Benteke for the moniker of ‘worst striker at Palace’ this season. Leicester City would like to continue the asset-stripping at Bournemouth and take David Brooks off their hands. They aren’t so keen on Josh King, however - who could well be off to Villa who will beat last season’s record if they pull off all these deals. Brendan is also in dire need of defenders and St Etienne’s Wesley Fofana is in pole-position. Moise Kean is keen to go home and Carlo Ancelotti is in no mind to stop him. Juventus are keen and Aaron Ramsey wouldn’t be against heading to Goodison in return, no doubt getting in J-Rod’s spaces in the long-term. If Zidane can pull off the great con of getting Bale to United he’d like to take Riyad Mahrez away from City. Newcastle United have pulled off some wonderfully simple signings in Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick. It probably won’t stop the fans having a moan, however. Finally, Jack Wilshere is expected to be given a free by West Ham. Skipper Mark Noble is not expected to tweet his frustration at this decision by the board.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

And it’s back - I mean, did we even really notice it had been away? When you’ve had 100 days of no Premier League football already this year, a mere 40 or so feels like an evening off when all said and done. But, it’s back and it’s business as usual for most of this year’s protagonists - those that didn’t get given an extra week off after their Champions League/Europa League failures, that is. The last time they graced the Premier League, Fulham overspent and defended like idiots. Well, so far they have sorted out the spending this time around. There’s something just starting to smell very nice in Mikel Arteta’s kitchen. If there were any Arsenal fans foolish enough (of course there will have been) to question the signing of Willian from Chelsea, they will have understood the error of their ways by the final whistle at Craven Cottage. Willian conducted the Gunners’ orchestra to a brand new beat as they eased past Scott Parker’s men with zero issues - was it a coincidence that there was no David Luiz? Potentially, but his Brazilian replacement Gabriel looked decent on debut and topped it off with the second goal. There was, of course, the obligatory strike from Yo-Pierre - a player that

Arteta is convinced will put pen to paper in the coming week. And, based on Arsenal since Peppy G’s former assistant rocked up, why wouldn’t he? As expected, Liverpool versus Leeds United was over-hyped, disappointing and a total damp squib of a match. When will TV channels realise that they should not push a game as being a classic when they normally fizzle out in the way this one did? Of course, I am narrating back to you what I had scribbled down on Friday as I was convinced that Liverpool’s title defence would end up in a dull 0-0 or 1-1 outcome. You can thank me now I double bluffed myself on purpose, given my track record of seeing the complete opposite to what I predict happening on the pitch. So, thanks to me, we witnessed a 4-3 classic - the much-shortened preseason clearly meaning that neither team had any time to spend practicing the basics of defending. Mo Salah became the second quickest man to 50 Premier League goals in his own stadium in becoming the first player since John Aldridge to score an opening day hat-trick for Liverpool. Bielsa, the man every neutral has been looking forward to seeing in the top flight, made his standards clear by getting his disappointment across very clearly well, via his translator anyway.

Wilf Zaha took thirteen matches to get off the mark for Crystal Palace - this season, just 13 minutes. You can understand it, if he took thirteen matches this time around he’d probably be condemned to yet another season at Selhurst Park and Wilf ain’t up for that. Would a winner against Southampton be enough for PSG to splash the cash? Stranger things have happened, that’s for sure. Palace, many people’s tip for a relegation battle this season, will need more wins like this one over Southampton and a decent replacement for Zaha if he does, finally, fly the nest. West Ham fans were at least spared the indignity of having to watch that rubbish in the stadium. Yet another Premier League season, yet more hopes and dreams dashed by the end of the first match. Newcastle managed to put the ups-and-downs of the last few months behind them, make some sensible signings and integrate them into a winning team in the blink of an eye. In Callum Wilson, they have a man that could finally score the goals that Joelinton was meant to score last season. And, if Andy Carroll can learn a new way of jumping for the ball without smashing defenders with his left elbow, they could form a curious partnership. Similarly to the Hammers fans, Tottenham fans hoped their opening clash at home to Everton might finally be the game where it becomes clear

what Jose Mourinho is trying to build. Nope, I’m none the wiser either. Yes, yes the ball was moved about five feet before the free-kick was whipped in, but really? You expect that to be enough to mask the fact that Spurs were absolutely dire and were outplayed and out-thought by an Everton side that will do well not to get too carried away by this win. The two midfields told the tale of the transfer window for each club - Spurs had Hojbjerg, slow and ineffective. The Toffees had Allan, Doucoure and James - all energy, all prompting and costing a cool £60m. For once, for the clueless Everton moneymen, it looks like money well spent. Fair play to Dominic Calvert-Lewin as well, scoring the most classical of classic opening day centre forward goals. I said it last season and I will say it again now - if you are looking for someone to play second fiddle to Harry Kane, this guy is your man. Not for Spurs though, I mean he’d be foolish to move there. Leicester City fell off an absolute cliff at the end of last season but they got off to a top start away to relegationfavourites West Bromwich Albion. Jamie Vardy, who just loves playing WBA, scored twice from the spot after Ben Chilwell replacement Timothy Castagne headed the Foxes ahead. Don’t get too excited though, City fans. It’s the backend of a season where Brendan struggles.

Las Ramblas Rubys golf Golf Society Results for w/c 7.9.20 Monday’s ‘Counter Game’ was the version where the number of player’s scores to be recorded was known in advance. With 104 points it was Paul Brown, Ian Moir, JoyceMcClusky and … ………me! taking the honours. Just 4 points behind us were Nick and Donna Campbell, Petina Murray and RegAkehurst. Wednesday and it was serious business as we played round 3 (best 4 rounds out of 6 to count) of the Club Championship individual Stableford. In the men’s section Bryan Neal served his cause well by winning on the day with 38 points. He was closely followed by Ken Robertson and Graham Murray who both managed 36 points. The lady’s section was won on the day by Joyce McClusky who also scored 36 points. Three players supplemented their incomes today by scoring a ‘2’ namely Mark Western, Bryan Neal and HendrickOldenziel. We ended the week with a ‘Change Partners’. Winning with a respectable score of 85 points (the record is 94) were

Ken & Liz Robertson, John Shervell and Mike Mahony (with no ‘e’). Behind them with 80 points were Nigel Price, Paul Brown, Albert and ‘new boy’ Richard McGarvey. This week’s quote comes from a certain Henry Beard who commented, ‘When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.’ How very true.

The lockdown we experienced was a nightmare for most of us, however it gave the golf courses a chance to rejuvenate and recover, unfortunately this was not the case with Alenda where we played our latest Trophy game on Friday. We found the course in poor condition for our third trophy game of the season and the scores were indicative of the state of the course with only three scores breaking 30 points out of 28 players. The gold division and overall winner on the day was Euan Harvey, but the happiest and most

Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

excited player was our treasurer George Marshall Deane who won the silver division, well done George. Our Player of the year standing remained unchanged however with captain David Johnston still in the lead after winning at Roda a couple of weeks ago, and in second place is Terry Brooker, Walter Millar won our other trophy game at Altorreal. There has been nearest the pin winners and a number of other prize winners over the three games so well done to all those players far too numerous to mention, and well

done the organisers for making it all happen. One good thing to come out of this situation is the social side, which with restrictions of course, which has allowed us to meet up, play golf and socialise afterwards which has been a lifesaver with the situation we find ourselves in. Our next trophy game is at Vistabella which is fully booked. To contact the society email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk
