Major drugs bust on the coast There were dramatic scenes this week as armed Guardia Civil raided villas on the coast in a major, coordinated drugs bust.

See Main Advert on page 31

Officers arrested twelve alleged members of a drug trafficking gang that had five marijuana plantations hidden in the underbuilds of rented luxury villas. The officers carried out eight simultaneous raids in San Miguel de Salinas, Rojales and Orihuela Costa, where they seized 2,953 mature marijuana plants, 1.6 kilos of buds already packed for distribution and various doses of cocaine, MDMA and

hashish oil, some believed to be for the personal consumption of the members of the gang. The Guardia Civil estimate that the value of the seized drugs on the black market would be in excess of €60,000. The investigators also seized €45,000 and 4,000 pounds sterling in cash, five highend cars, a gun, two electric pistols and numerous luxury watches, among other effects. Police sources say that the leaders of the gang lived the high-life, spending €2,000 a night on expensive champagne and installing luxury gyms in the rental villas for gang members to enjoy. The Judicial Police Team of the Guardia Civil in Pilar de la Horadada began initial investigations after a complaint was filed at the end of January by a member of the public regarding the occupation of a house in San Miguel de Salinas. The house had already been vacated but officers realised that it had been used to grow marijuana and thus began an arduous investigation to uncover the network. Investigators discovered that the gang searched for large unoccupied houses

with gardens and then used falsified rental contracts in the name of foreign people to register for utility services such as water and electricity. Once installed in the house, they then prepared the properties for the indoor cultivation of marijuana. For this they relied on one of the gang members who had studied agronomy. The two gang leaders are aged 23 and 28 years old and in their personal homes the Guardia Civil located hundreds of bottles of top-quality champagne, as well as designer clothing and jewellery. According to investigators, the group was also obsessed with security. They hired alarm and video surveillance services and also kept all kinds of weapons close at hand to deal with any surprises. As if that were not enough, in each house had dangerous breeds as guard dogs. During the raids, police wore body cams and dramatic footage of the officers swarming the homes, and of the arrests can be seen at: https://youtu.be/s98j7gq9No

Funding for cat sterilisation programme Torrevieja Town Hall has received a subsidy from the provincial government in order to control the stray cat population. The subsidy amounts to €12,094.10, with which 185 cats will be sterilized. The awarding of the grant was announced by Councillor of Animal Protection, Concha Sala, who explained that around 185 cats – half male, and half female – can be sterilised with the funding. Once all the necessary services are coordinated, sterilization treatments will be carried out in collaboration with local veterinary clinics.

Councillor Sala said that this sterilisation programme will alleviate the massive increase in the birth of stray cats that she claims is a direct consequence of the unsuccessful management of the previous municipal government, which was unsuccessful in acquiring this same grant from the Diputación de Alicante. Concha Sala argues that "castration and sterilisation is the only way to reduce the number of cats in the colonies on the streets of the town." She is also convinced that "with the help of animal welfare associations involved in this same goal we will be able to control these colonies so that all citizens can live together in harmony."

Participatory budget proposals open Any person registered on the padrón in Torrevieja, over the age of 16, and any association or business is invited to participate in submitting a budget proposal for 2021. Councillor for Innovation, Ricardo Recuero, and the Treasury Councillor, Domingo Paredes, announced until Sunday, October 4, any person, business or association registered in Torrevieja, may submit relevant proposals of

general interest, as long as the content is not illegal, defamatory or discriminatory, to be included in the Participatory Budgets 2021. Proposals can be submitted through a form on the website www.torrevieja.es. Subsequently, all the proposals will be made public and municipal technicians will study, assess and decide which are viable and which are not.

50,000 litres of red wine spilled as tank bursts A video, showing the moment a huge tank of red wine exploded, has gone viral this week. The video, recorded at Bodegas Vitivinos in Albacete, shows the very moment a vat of wine explodes, spilling 50,000 litres of red wine out onto the floor. The torrent of wine floods the entire factory floor and spills outside around tractors and cars, and into a nearby field. According to local reports, the spillage was caused by a break in one of the tanks. Bodegas Vitivinos was founded in 1969 and produces up to 6 million kilos of grapes a year. The winery uses grape varieties including bobal and tempranillo to create an “intense dark cherry colour”, according to their website. A video of the spill went viral on Twitter and has been viewed more than 8.2 million times. Numerous commenters compared the video to the haunting scene in Stanley Kubrick’s thriller The Shining, where blood flows from the elevator doors. Others simply remarked on the tragic waste of so much red wine: “I see it and it hurts,” said one Twitter user. “What else do you want from us 2020,” another asked. “And how does anyone go with a bucket, glass, whatever.”

Interactive nautical map goes live The port of Alicante has launched an interactive map on its website to track and report incidents involving nautical signals along the entire stretch of Alicante coastline. Despite technological advances for navigation, such as GPS and

telecommunications, traditional maritime signals remain essential to ensure safety at sea and to facilitate the movement of ships safely into and out of ports. These visual, acoustic or radioelectric devices are essential to warn of hidden dangers, especially when GPS devices are not available. The Alicante Port Authority has control of maritime signals across the entire province, being directly responsible for most of them, such as lighthouses. The rest of the signals, publicly owned, such as those of Generalitat Valenciana managed ports, or private, such as those corresponding to fish farms, must be kept in perfect condition by their owners. The signal technicians of the port of Alicante are in charge of ensuring the correct maintenance of all signals, and

may even issue fines when deficiencies are detected that are not corrected. On the Alicante coast there are currently 158 signals, counting lighthouses, buoys and beacons, and for the first time ever these have been gathered on an interactive map on the website of the Port Authority. Through this map, users can consult the technical data of each signal, its positioning coordinates, or its visual or acoustic characteristics. In addition, the map is connected to the monitored control system, thanks to which navigators and signal holders will be able to see incidents that occur in real time. The website, for those interested in having a look is https://www.puertoalicante.com/

Three arrested for alleged money laundering Three businessmen, including an insurance broker from Elche whose initials are A.G.H., were arrested and brought to Elche Police Station on Thursday. The arrests are part of an investigation into alleged money laundering. The other arrested parties are identified only by their initials V. B. and J.C. Several other people are also being investigated and have given statements, but are not yet under arrest. The police operation began as an investigation by the Tax Office. Officers attached to the Specialized and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) travelled to Elche to make the arrests. Local sources indicate that the investigative process began a year and a half ago but no further data has been provided as it is believed that the investigation is still underway. At least six business premises and homes have been searched, with the presence of the court clerk and the defendants themselves. One of the searches was carried on the ground floor of the Manuel Martínez Valero stadium. The objective appeared to be to collect data, seize computers and documents.

Rubalcava Palace to be restored The Mayor also explained that the Department of Historical Heritage is also making progress ‘in important projects to recover a large part of Orihuela's heritage, such as the buildings of Los Antiguos Couzgados, Caja de Monserrate, the Sala de los Hombres of the San Juan Museum of God and the House of Miners’ and promised that further details will be advanced given in the coming weeks.

The Ministry of Culture has given its approval to the project for the rehabilitation, conservation and restoration of the turn of the 20th century Rubalcava Palace in Orihuela. The agreement was made after Orihuela Town Hall accepted the ministry’s wishes that the revamped building become a museum, on the condition that training rooms are also included in the plans. The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, announced that after a further 12 months since the last project plan was submitted and denied, the restoration can now start. Mayor Bascuñana said: “We are happy because we have taken an important step to continue with this project that we are so excited about and on which we have been working since the previous legislature. We hope to be able to conclude the project soon so that we can tender the works as soon as possible.” "The tireless work of the Historical Heritage area, headed by the councillor

Rafael Almagro, as well as the entire team, means we are npw able to advance in the renovation of this important asset that needs urgent action." The work planned by the Department of Heritage to restore and renovate the palace is estimated reach three million euros, of which 50 percent will be subsidised with European funds. Councillor Almagro pointed out that by the end of this year the tender for the project to award the work in early 2021 could be issued and work could begin in the middle of next year. The programme of works will last for one year "so that by mid-2022 the palace may be renovated and restored". The City Council will restore the furniture and paintings that were located in the old Palace of Rubalcava and reinstate its noble rooms, which are recorded in several photos and documents. All of this will add to the Palaces attraction once it opens as a museum.

HOW TO BUY A PROPERTY IN SPAIN WITHOUT BEING HERE (PART I) Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Whether you’re in Spain and ready to view in person, or outside of Spain and want to view “virtually,” buying a property is pretty much the same as it was pre-pandemic. Keep seeing properties come up for sale that seem exactly what you’re looking for, then… they sell because you can’t make it over to Spain to view in person? You shouldn’t feel like you’ll never snap up a bargain again! There is another option for you! If you’re here, of course everything can be done in person, face to face. But if you’re not in Spain, thanks to technology and the wonderful world of the internet, you can still reserve a property with face to face interaction. The only difference is you’ll be talking and viewing the property via video call instead. Sounds complicated? Not at all! All you need is an internet connection, a computer, an iPad (Tablet), or a smart phone. Stop missing out on grabbing yourself a deal just because you’re not currently in Spain, and start your virtual viewings now. Here are 3 easy steps on how to get started with your virtual online property buying experience.

1. Choose your device. How would you prefer to see a property, virtually? On a computer screen? On an iPad (Tablet)? Or on a mobile “smart” phone? Consider the screen size. Obviously a computer will offer you a bigger screen. 2. Internet connection. You’ll need a good internet connection – strong and reliable. Meaning you should be able to see and hear everything without the signal breaking. 3. There are many options for video calls available. FaceTime if you’re using an Apple device. WhatsApp is also extremely popular. There are others out there too, many are free to use. Since being in lockdown you’ll probably have heard of Zoom. This is my personal favourite. Whatever mode of video call you choose to use, try it out on a family member or friend first. Technology is there to help us all, so why not make good use of it? We have 100% success rate with buyers reserving online. They have all been delighted with their purchase once they made it out to Spain, and saw it in person! More Madrid restrictions The Madrid regional government announced on Friday that it would extend the coronavirus mobility restrictions that currently affect 37 basic health areas in the region to eight new zones. Speaking at a press conference Madrid’s deputy health chief Antonio Zapatero said the move was aimed at “stopping the spread of the coronavirus” in the region, which has the highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in Spain, with 746.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The restrictions will be applied to eight basic health areas that have an incidence rate of more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. From yesterday, Monday 28th September, residents in these areas will only be able to leave the restricted zones for essential business, such as going to school or work, or to care for dependents. Capacity at stores and other commercial establishments will be set at 50 percent and closing time at 10pm with the exception of pharmacies, gas stations and health centres. Bar service will be prohibited and public parks in the affected zones will also be closed. The measures will last for at least two weeks. A total of 45 health areas, which are home to more than one million residents, have now been confined. Residents who break the restrictions on mobility could face fines of between €600 and

€600,000, according to the current health protocols. Zapatero also recommended that all residents in the Madrid region stay at home: “Our main concern is slowing the virus. We are recommending that all non-essential travel be avoided.” In an unusual turn of events, Health Minister Salvador Illa held an unexpected press conference at the same time that Zapatero was speaking, announcing that he had expected more ambitious measures from the Madrid government, such as reducing the capacity at sidewalk cafes across the region. Illa also called on the Madrid government to confine all areas with an incidence rate above 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The Madrid regional government has not ruled out introducing further measures in the coming weeks, such as ordering all commercial

establishments in the region to close by 10pm – not just in the 45 health areas under selective confinement. Doctors from 62 of the region’s hospitals claim 95% of intensive care units (ICUs) are occupied by Covid-19 patients, the region’s primary healthcare system is stretched to the limit, and there are still not enough contact tracers to manage the crisis. With more than 100,000 new infections since 1st August in the Madrid region, and 3,215 coronavirus patients in its hospitals, the regional administration is once again staring into the abyss of a combined health, economic and social crisis. According to experts, measures introduced so far by the Madrid region have arrived too late, and many believe that the lockdown of the entire city will be inevitable in just a few days.

Rubbish and recycling provider claims €255,000 from Orihuela The Sustainable Vega Baja Waste Consortium, which is made up of the 27 municipalities of the region, claims it is owed 255,786.40 euros from the Orihuela Municipal Council in unpaid contributions since 2018. The Consortium has sent a letter to the Oriolano consistory in which it urges it to pay the outstanding debts. These debts had been previously requested in documents sent in December 2018 and again in March 2020, but without response from the local government team. The consortium body is in charge of managing the waste of the 27 municipalities of the Vega Baja and for the separate collection of special household waste through its network of ecoparks and ecomobiles. It is financed by contributions from the town councils of the region which make twice yearly payments, the amount of which depends on the size of the municipality and the amount of waste generated. Orihuela, therefore, is the municipality that pays the highest fee of more than 51,000e every six months.

The economic situation of the Consortium is not the most buoyant, largely due to the defaults of some municipalities, as is the case with Orihuela. It is ironic to learn of the debt considering that the Oriolano mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, is the current Vice President of the consortium, after the PP assumed control of the consortium at the end of last year and appointed the Mayor of

Bigastro, Teresa Belmonte, as president. The Oriolano city council owes five full contributions and part of another. Therefore, for the first semester of 2018, there is €10,004 to pay and for the second €40,034. In 2019 neither of the two annual instalments were met at a rate of €51,696 each and this year 2020 the city has continued on the same path with no payments made.

In total this is €255,786 that the Consortium is demanding urgent payment of. "We want to express the urgent need for your deposit of the amount indicated as soon as possible, since the debts are overdue and the last contribution is close to maturity," said the treasurer of the consortium in the letter sent to the Orihuela City Council last August, before the last of the contributions expired. Justification Orihuela Councillor Víctor Valverde justified the nonpayment saying that "there are things that do not fit”. “There are figures that leap out of more than 20,000 euros in 2018 that do not fit our accounting assessment, and we need to try to clarify this”, he explained. The Councillor pointed out that the Town Hall is waiting to see "how these amounts that they ask us for that year have been accrued." However, the Councillor did say:"Our intention is to pay the consortium and we are aware that we owe money, so I hope to be able to resolve those doubts that we have in the coming days and release the payment."

How to Be Greedy When Others Are Fearful "We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful." This quote from the Oracle of Omaha (Warren Buffett) is repeated often, or at least part of it is. But saying something is a lot easier than doing it.

are. Yes, the markets are dropping, but for investors with cash, this is the time to make your move. You may be tempted to hoard cash, but that is the fearful way.

As stock markets crash around the world, fear is widespread and contagious. However, there are three steps you can take to make the most of the opportunity to make your money work harder for you.

2. Review your current investments Many people think, my investments have worked in the past and now is not the time to change anything. Nothing could be further from the truth. What looked good last year, may well have taken a bigger hit and now is the time to look at different funds.

1. See the market crash for what it is – an opportunity Now is the time to see things for what they really

3. Think long term Whatever else you do, think long term. Buffett was exactly right when he said, "If you aren't

willing to own a stock for 10 years, don't even think about owning it for 10 minutes." By the way, thinking long term can even mean looking at stocks that have benefited from the COVID-19 scare in a different way. Shark stranded on Guardamar beach Beach-goers visitng in Las Roquetas de Guardamar made a surprise discovery on Saturday when what looked like a shark was found stranded on the sand. Local Police and Civil Guard cordoned off the area along the shore and proceed to remove the specimen, which was still alive when the alarm was raised. The unusal

visitor was found to be a blue shark (Prionace glauca) of about two meters in length. "A harmless and increasingly rare shark", said biologist Juan Antonio Pujol , who shared the finding on his Natural Chronicles page . Walkers and bathers gathered at the area, located at the centre of

the urbanisation Benimar, in order to see the spectacular jaws of the animal with its serrated teeth. This species has an average length of 2.5 m and a weight of 80 kilos. The stranding of dolphins and other species on the beaches of the Vega Baja is relatively frequent, but sharks in the water or out are a rarity.

Mobile phone use still top driving distraction The DGT has released the latest data for fines issued during the latest campaign. The latest surveillance campaign, carried out between September 14th and 20th, shows that the use of mobile phones while driving is on the increase. The campaign figures give an overview of ‘distraction’ offences by drivers with mobile phone use still top of the list. In total, the DGT carried out checks on 355,763 vehicles with over 5,000 drivers issued fines or cautions for actions deemed to be a distraction while driving. The most common were these: • Manual use of a mobile phone (2873). The DGT were keen to remind motorists that use of a

mobile phone while driving can be comparable to driving under the influence of alcohol.

• Vehicle occupants buckling up while driving, when they realize they are being watched from the air. 484 were caught for this offence. • Use of headphones connected to sound reproducing devices, other than mobile phones, 392

drivers caught. • Use

or manipulation of browsers, internet access screens, video or DVD players while driving - 65 motorists caught.

• In addition to these specific distractions, traffic officers filed 1,395 miscellaneous distraction complaints for other offenses: putting on makeup, putting paperwork in order, etc. In addition, 546 drivers who were caught distracted while driving were also caught for driving with alcohol levels higher than allowed or for testing positive for drugs.

WHO warns two million virus deaths possible The World Health Organisation warned on Friday that coronavirus deaths could more than double to two million if infection-fighting measures are not kept up, as Europe tightened the screws faced with mounting cases and the US crossed another bleak milestone. Global deaths had reached 985,707 according to a tally around 6pm GMT Friday, from more than 32.3 million cases. The hardest-hit United States crossed seven million cases — more than a fifth of the global total despite accounting for only four percent of the world population. “One million is a terrible number and we need to reflect on that before we start considering a second million,” the WHO’s emergencies director Michael Ryan told reporters when asked how much higher deaths could mount. But he added: “Are we prepared collectively to do what it takes to avoid that number? “If we don’t take those actions… yes, we will be looking at that number and sadly much higher.” The WHO warning came as Spanish officials expanded a

lockdown in and around Madrid on Friday to cover one million people. Madrid’s health authority said new rules largely banning tens of thousands from leaving their districts — in addition to the 850,000 already living under similar restrictions — would be enforced from Monday. Across Europe, new spikes were springing up, with Poland and France the latest to register record figures. France’s daily cases soared past 16,000 for the first time in a stark indicator of the virus’s resurgence, and the French government faced protests from the hospitality industry as it prepares tough new restrictions. Across the Channel, British authorities announced restrictions now extending to one-quarter of the country’s population, while two supermarket chains said they were rationing purchases of certain goods to clamp down on panic buying. Moscow ordered vulnerable residents to avoid infection by staying at home, while Israel ratcheted up its lockdown by stopping people from taking flights out of the country. And in Brazil, the coronavirus fallout for Rio de Janeiro’s worldfamous carnival grew as

organisers postponed street parties indefinitely, a day after the official parades were scrapped. Brazil now has the world’s second highest death toll — nearly 140,000 fatalities against more than 200,000 in the US — and is still battling to bring the virus under control. Aside from carnival, major events disrupted by the pandemic on Friday alone included planned Australian cricket matches against Afghanistan and New Zealand, while the French Open tennis tournament said it would allow only 1,000 spectators each day. Eastern Europe emerged as another hotspot this week with EU officials warning of an alarming rise in deaths and hospitalisations of more vulnerable patients in countries including Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Romania. Poland, which was not included on the EU’s list, saw infections double from just over 700. But there was a glimmer of hope from a paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which suggested masks could help spread immunity to the virus by limiting people’s exposure to only very small amounts of it.

No deal Brexit would be devastating for Spanish economy Spain has finally admitted the huge damage a no deal Brexit would do to the economy, amid fears its crucial relationship with Gibraltar could be at risk if there is no trade agreement between the UK and EU.

Social Security in Campo de Gibraltar”.

Comisiones Obreras, the largest trade union in Spain, has warned it would be “devastating” for the Spanish economy if there is no post-Brexit trade deal. The Westminster Government is currently negotiating its future trading relationship with the EU on behalf of the whole of the UK – including its oversees territory Gibraltar. Firms in Spain are heavily reliant on business with The Rock with around 15,000 Spaniards travelling to work in Gibraltar every day. It is feared the lack of a deal will mean workers are unable to travel freely without the need for paperwork across the 0.75-mile (1.2km) land border with Spain.

He ordered the Spanish Government to press the EU into finding a way to break the current impasse in talks with the UK.

In a statement, Comisiones Obreras, said: "A Brexit without an agreement on Gibraltar would be devastating for the economy of the area and could put at risk the employment of Spanish workers in the Rock."

Gibraltar has been in British hands since the Treaty of Urecht in 1713 – but Spain maintains its sovereignty claim. The territory is self-governing in all matters, including taxes, however the UK is responsible for foreign policy and defence.

Manuel Triano, regional secretary of the union, said cross-border workers "account for 15.1 percent of the contributors to the

As the deadline of December 31 gets closer, Mr Triano urged negotiators to put the “interests of citizens above everything”.

The union chief said: “Campo de Gibraltar, throughout its history, has paid a high price for the policies that have been made without respecting its interests and sacrificing the living and working conditions of its citizens. A government that defines itself as progressive cannot go back down that path and must arbitrate an agreement in which the interests of the men and women of this region are taken into account.”

Gibraltar's Chief Minister Fabian Picardo held talks with the Prime Minister

last Friday. Mr Picardo insisted Boris Johnson was “clear and unequivocal in his support” for Gibraltar in negotiations with Brussels. The Spanish Government has previously lobbied for Gibraltar to join the passport-free Schengen zone after the transition period, but this complex move would contradict with an end to freedom of movement. Mr Picardo added Gibraltar wanted to see an agreement which “maximises frontier fluidity for persons and goods”. Following a discussion with Boris Johnson, he said: "The Prime Minister was clear and unequivocal in his support for Gibraltar, in particular in the context of the ongoing negotiations for the future relationship with the EU. "Gibraltar wants a good deal to be done which maximises frontier fluidity for persons and goods and which secures

greater prosperity for all.

Minister's support for our position."

"We believe that with good will, good faith and a good negotiation, a deal can be done that can deliver real benefits without any of the negotiating parties having to cross any of their red lines.

Speaking on Gibraltar Day on September 10, Mr Johnson insisted he will stand by The Rock in Brexit negotiations.

"What we will not do is recommend a deal to Gibraltar's Parliament if it does cross our well known, historic and irrenunciable red lines. "I know Gibraltar has the Prime

He said: “We absolutely will be doing this together.” He added: “Unless and until you decide otherwise, no sliver or rock, no fragment of national sovereignty will be given away.”

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Waiting and wondering was the story for sterling this week. And although it took a distant fourth place behind the US dollar and Japanese yen, the pound was only narrowly beaten by the Canadian dollar and strengthened by an average of 0.7% overall. The UK government spent Monday softening up the population for tighter anti-Covid restrictions, before the PM addressed the nation on Tuesday. As the virus is threatening to flare up again, restrictions on hospitality opening times and working from home has once again been advised. After waiting for Boris Johnson’s announcement, sterling was on standby for Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s statement on Thursday, where he revealed his plans to help the two and half million people on furlough and the unknown number whose jobs are at risk as a result of renewed Covid containment measures. The pound climbed against the euro and US dollar after the fresh job retention measures to replace the furlough scheme were announced. The Job Support Scheme will last six months and will encourage businesses to retain staff on reduced hours, with government support for the lost wages. This economic support from the government was widely anticipated, having already been priced in ahead of the speech. While investors may worry about the long term economic impact, the pound did enjoy some relief in a week where increased restrictions and growing concerns over the slowing of the UK’s economic recovery had created fears over a sharp spike in the unemployment rate. Official economic data for the UK extended no further than retail sales this week, which increased by an on-forecast 0.8% in August after three months of strong gains. House prices remained strong, with Rightmove reporting a

0.2% rise in asking prices in September and a 5% annual increase.Input from the Bank of England and the Treasury was also positive on balance, with Governor Andrew Bailey playing down the idea of negative interest rates. With less than 100 days to until Brexit, eyes are starting to dart between Covid economic recovery and the ‘will they won’t they?’ potential trade deal between the UK and EU. EUR It wasn’t just the UK bringing in renewed Covid restrictions. France announced new measures during the week, as did Italy and Spain, but the euro is of course less sensitive than sterling to such national restrictions, because I is less susceptible to individual national stimulus measures. It did not flinch at the news, and is unchanged on the week against sterling. There was not much help for the euro from the economic data, and the provisional purchasing managers’ index readings did not improve the mood. Of the 14 from Europe, only three – for French, German, and Eurozone came in ahead of forecast and higher on the month. Small improvements in German and Eurozone consumer confidence left both of them below zero, and the services sector measures for France, Germany and Euroland were below 50, indicating shrinkage. Still, despite the UK on course to leave the EU at the end of the year, Bulgaria and Croatia are very much on track to join the single currency crew, with the European Central Bank’s Economic Bulletin confirming the two countries had taken the penultimate step towards participation in the euro by joining the exchange rate mechanism “ERM II”. Other than that there wasn’t anything new from the ECB, beyond a less-than-helpful observation by the bank’s president that, “the strength of the recovery remains very uncertain”.

1€ rail deal sells out in 30 minutes A high-speed rail deal where the first 10,000 people to register would get a voucher for €1 that they could swap for a ticket sold out within half an hour – and crashed the server. From March next year, French national rail board SNCF will be operating in Spain through its low-cost brand OuiGo, with express train seats set to come in at around 50 percent of those of RENFE – currently the only firm, and State-run, which provides this form of transport nationally, but which will cease to hold a monopoly from the end of 2020. To celebrate the launch of its first connection – the MadridBarcelona express, which also stops in Zaragoza and Tarragona – OuiGo was offering 10,000 travel vouchers for €1 for the route, and its website was open to registration from 6pm last Thursday evening (24th September). Would-be passengers attempting to cash in on the deal took to social media to complain about how the site was constantly down, with a 'bad gateway' message appearing every time they tried to use it. Others were concerned that

they had registered, but not received the confirmation email. It turned out all 10,000 tickets at €1 had been snapped up before 6.30pm, but OuiGo has announced online that further, similar offers will be launched at a later date. The company told potential users to keep an eye on social media for news of future deals. One customer, however, posted a letter on his Twitter page – Brasthforth65 – welcoming him to OuiGo and confirming he would receive an email within 72 hours containing

a voucher to buy his €1 ticket 'once sales are open', to travel on the Madrid-Barcelona line from March 2021. Brasthforth65 reassured other Twitter users that they 'need not panic' as yet. After starting its services on Spain's busiest commuter line on 15th March, OuiGo then intends to expand to provide links to other cities in Spain to and from Madrid – so far, Valencia, Alicante, Málaga, Sevilla and Córdoba. Trains are double-decker Alstom Euroduplex, with 509 seats each, a bar carriage, and stewards on hand to attend to passengers.

Patagonia Restaurants – A steak lover’s dream Ask any discerning chef and they will tell you that Argentinean steak is amongst the best in the world. It's renowned for being incomparably tender and richly flavoured, even though it's rarely seasoned with anything but salt. Its superior flavour comes from cattle that are raised on the grassy ‘las Pampas’ plains, the way the beef is butchered and its slow cooking method using only wood or charcoal. It was the love of this particular type of steak that led owner Joe, alongside his wife Maria, to buy the Patagonia Steakhouse 8 years ago. The original restaurant, based in La Marina, had opened 4 years before and Joe was a huge fan. He couldn’t get enough of the restaurant’s meat feast, then he tried the Argentinean Steak and there was no stopping him. So when the restaurant came up for sale the deal wasn’t ruled by

Joe’s heart or his head – but by his stomach. Luckily, Joe’s taste buds knew it was a viable business opportunity and they were absolutely right. Patagonia Steak House prides itself on its home made, traditional dishes and sauces, made with the freshest ingredients. And as you would expect, all of the steaks are cut from the highestquality Argentinean beef – and individually cooked to your liking. The chorizo and black puddings are made to an original Argentinean recipe, as are the traditional empanadas, which are customary small pasties. Patagonia Steak House has three sister restaurants in La Marina, Quesada and El Raso, all have the same menu, and prepare dishes in exactly the same way. This ensures that steak lovers get the same fantastic food whichever

restaurant they dine in. The menu at Patagonia Steak House is full of culinary delights to satisfy ever customer. This includes rump, sirloin, rib-eye and fillet steaks to the chef’s choices such as the mixed grill, Patagonia burger or crown of lamb. There are also pork, chicken and vegetarian dishes as well as a children’s menu. The restaurant has recently added two set menus of three-courses. The first priced at 13.90€ and the luxury menu at 19,90€. Sunday is the all you can eat ‘Mixed Meat Feast’ for just 11.90€. For those looking for a bargain, there is a daily meal deal board, priced at just 9.90€, which considering the quality of the food you get, is excellent value for money. If you have room there is a choice of desserts or you could try the house speciality the Don Patagonia vanilla ice cream with whiskey or Bailey’s. All Patagonia Steak House’s comply with Covid-19 regulations, with socially distanced tables in the stylish dining room, conservatory or terrace, hand sanitiser and a separate smokers’ area. The restaurants are open every day from 5.00pm until 11.30pm. Summer officially ends in Orihuela Costa The Councillor for Beaches and Citizen Security for Orihuela, Ramón López, alongside Rubén Selma, Local Police officer and Julio Gil, head of Ambumar, have taken stock of the 2020 beach season in Orihuela. Despite an uncertain start to the season due to the COVID19 health crisis, the summer season has closed on a positive note thanks to the professionalism and collaboration of the different departments of the Orihuela Council, which have had to adapt to the circumstances to ensure that the beaches of Orihuela are a safe destination. To adapt to the current circumstances, the Orihuela City Council has incorporated cameras to control capacity on the beaches this year, the cleaning of the elements around the beaches has been increased, it has used beach aides employed by the Generalitat Valenciana. The local government also installed a health station with the main objective of preventing skin cancer, as well as contributing to the safety of visitors to Oriolan beaches. Ramón López, said: “Local Police, Rescue and Lifeguard Service and Civil Protection have been ensuring the safety of residents and tourists who have visited us this summer. Most tourists have shown their collaboration in the use and enjoyment of the beaches at all times in the face of the circumstances caused by the pandemic and we end the season with no notable incidents.” Maritime Police This summer the Maritime Police unit has been reinstated with 4 officers and 2

jet skis providing the service from 15th June to 15th September, to cover the high summer season from 11am to 7pm every day. The service stretched the entire length of the Oriolano coastline, and ran in direct contact with the Local Police and the Ambumar lifeguard service to coordinate actions, both at sea and on the sand. Rubén Selma, Orihuela Local Police officer explained that “one of the main objectives of the unit during this season has been prevention, through information and warning to users of the Orihuela coastline. This included skippers and crew members of boats, bathers, fishermen, practitioners of water sports, etc. It has been possible to maintain a continuous control of the bathing area, avoiding serious accidents and controlling compliance with the law”. Within the surveillance and control of the bathing area, it is worth highlighting the large number of boats that have been spotted within the bathing area, jetskis left on the beach itself and 207 boats that were either sailing or anchored in the bathing area, which were warned and escorted from the area. One of the more frequent interventions this summer has been warning groups of young people who head to the cliffs at Cabo Roig to jump into the water with a considerable risk of injury. Police Beach Patrol Bicycles The officers assigned to the bicycle service have increased their work during the summer of 2020 in the coastal areas from Punta Prima to Mil Palmeras,

patrolling the beaches, the promenades and adjacent traffic areas with patrols carried out both by bicycle and on foot. The services carried out by this group have been, predominantly, control and surveillance of the principles included in the municipal laws, especially beach rules. This includes how people use and enjoy the beach, COVID-19 regulation, control of street vending and collaboration with rescue and first aid services. “This unit has also been developing its work in the commercial area of Aguamarina, where every summer, due to the number of hospitality establishments, street vending is carried out illegally. This is the cause of constant complaints from business owners and tourists, so with this unit surveillance has been reinforced in peak hours, almost eradicating this illegal activity ”, explained Rubén Selma, who also said that “work has also been done to control and monitor establishments and their terraces, especially to comply with anti-covid health regulations.” Lifeguard service For his part, Julio Gil, head of Ambumar, said: “Despite the initial feelings of uncertainty that we had due to the COVID19 crisis, the assessment of the season must be a positive one. Although a smaller number of people was expected on the beaches, the truth is that, on the central dates, from 15th July to 15th August, beach use has been in line with other years.” “Regarding the incidents experienced, users have responded positively to the new measures that the City Council, the Local Police and the rescue and first aid

service have taken to avoid and contain possible infections on the beaches. There has been a greater collaboration from beach-goers when following the advice that the lifeguard service gave them, which means that incidents in the water have decreased considerably.”

Finally, Gil wanted to highlight "the collective effort and coordination of all municipal services, Local Police, Emergencies and Cleaning Services, which, faced with a difficult situation like this season, have joined forces and guaranteed a successful summer.

Immigrant boat lands in Orihuela Costa A dinghy with nine people on board arrived last Tuesday afternoon on the coast of Orihuela. As reported by the Red Cross, the boat has arrived at the Punta Prima beach in the capital of Vega Baja with nine people.

Two of them have been located and transferred to the port of Alicante. It is the second boat that arrives on the coast of Alicante this Tuesday, after a dinghy that has arrived at Poble Nou de Benitatxell in the morning with seven people.

British ambassador sends Brexit message to expats With 100 days until the end of the Transition Period on 31st December, HMA Hugh Elliott has recorded a video message for UK Nationals living in Spain. Speaking about the continuing negotiations on the future relationship between the UK and the EU, the Ambassador said: “I want to reassure you that your rights as UK nationals living in Spain are already protected under the Withdrawal Agreement between the UK and the EU. And that both the UK and Spanish Governments are fully committed to implementing the citizens’ rights provisions in the Agreement.” The Ambassador reminds UK Nationals of the need to register as a resident as soon as possible, but acknowledges that there are difficulties with getting appointments in some places. UK Nationals will still be protected by the Agreement, as long as you can prove you were legally living in Spain before the end of 2020, so the Embassy’s advice is to make sure you have documentation (eg. padron certificate, rental agreement, utility bills) to demonstrate you were living here before the end of the year.

If you have difficulties completing your residency application, the UK Government has provided funding to three organisations – Age in Spain, Babelia and IOM – to answer questions and provide practical support. For details of the help they can provide and how to contact them visit: gov.uk/livinginspain. The Embassy and Consulates are also running a series of Facebook Live Q&As on different topics related to living in Spain and the actions UK Nationals may need to take. All sessions take place on www.facebook.com/britsinspain and are available to watch afterwards. The current schedule is as follows, although please

Each of the 20 or so eggs is around 20 centimetres (eight inches) in diameter, and are thought to have been laid by titanosaurus sauropods – fourlegged herbivores with long necks and long tails. The species is known to have been 20 metres long when fully grown. The site was initially found at the end of last year by palaeontologist and off-road athlete José Manuel Gasca when he was out training with the Club Alpino Universitario, a collegebased trail-running association, through the mountains just outside Loarre in the province of Huesca, the northern part of which borders onto the Pyrénées. At first, it was thought the dig might contain dinosaur fossils – some of the best-preserved of these have been found throughout Aragón and the

province of Teruel has capitalised on the fact with its much-loved Dinópolis theme park – or perhaps, if archaeologists were really lucky, fossilised remains of eggs. But what they found were piles of intact eggs in what they suspect is just one of four nests in the area, and which could even still contain unborn dinosaurs. It is probably unlikely they would be able to hatch them after 68 million years, so there is virtually no chance of

the dinosaurs being brought back from extinction and Aragón becoming a 21st-century Jurassic Park, but if the eggs do, indeed, contain titanosaurus embryos, palaeontologists will be able to make giant leaps forward in their research into dinosaur reproduction. And a pre-foetal dinosaur might be the closest the modern human race ever gets to

seeing a real-live one. Dr Miguel Moreno Azanza, a palaeontologist originally from Huesca but now living in Portugal, is leading the research and says he was 'shocked' by the discovery, given that his team had been working on dinosaur eggs in Aragón for the past 14 years and 'never expected to find a nest of this magnitude' in its northernmost province. Very little is known about dinosaur embryos, he says, so the studies could be ground-breaking. It is believed dinosaurs would seek out 'sanctuaries', or remote, sheltered areas such as caves, to lay their eggs, and that they stayed there with their hatched offspring, protecting them – unlike some species of reptile which lay eggs and then disappear, not needing to guard them while they hatch and never actually meeting their 'children'. The photograph, taken by Zaragoza University, shows Dr Miguel Moreno Azanza and trailrunner José Manuel Gasca with one of the dinosaur eggs found in Loarre.

Dinosaur eggs found in Aragón 'may contain embryos' One of the world's largest-known dinosaur 'nests' has been found in northern Aragón, containing unhatched eggs thought to be around 68 million years old. And they may even still have embryos inside them, say historians.

Shop Local

CostaBlancaPeople 29th September - 5th October 2020

www.costablancapeople.com

SHOP LOCAL Earlier this month, the Costa Blanca People launched our ‘Shop Local’ initiative, a campaign to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. So far, the campaign has been really well received among local business owners and it is encouraging to see so many businesses becoming advocates for the campaign by sharing the logo, supporting the initiative and voicing their support for fellow business owners in the area. Already, the campaign has had a positive impact with some of those displaying the logo already reporting that they have won new business this week as a direct result which is a wonderful result! We are seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic and believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. With local businesses still reeling from lockdown, this summer has been difficult for us all. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the winter months. Why have we launched this campaign? As the global pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to life on the Costa Blanca, we all need to do everything we possibly can to help our local economy

bounce back stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve launched our Shop Local campaign. We want to engage in partnership with local business leaders to give our towns, commercial centres, retailers, small businesses and charitable organisations a boost. We want to help businesses, shops, restaurants and entrepreneurs the support they need to continue to make the southern Costa Blanca a great place to live, work and socialise. How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal in your social media posts. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open

along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours. Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Making this campaign visible – on your social media (check our our ‘frame’ for your profile picture, search for ‘Shop Local Costa Blanca’ in frame options when you edit your profile picture to add a frame), in your window or place of business will help ensure it works and stays in the forefront of people’s minds. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Why shopping local works Shopping at local businesses puts money right back into the local economy, and by spending money in our local shops, restaurant, café or bar, we can all do our bit to help revive our local economy. Supporting our local businesses

Local business is very important for Kitchens Emilio. As the southern Costa Blanca continues to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people may have missed. Shop local, Costa Blanca It is our hope that Shopping Locally becomes a daily practice to grow a stronger community for us all. Across the southern Costa Blanca region, we value our local businesses and understand the impact that every one of our hard-earned euros can have on the vitality and survival of the places where we live. We all know that spending our money locally not only supports our friends and neighbours who run the businesses that make our communities unique, but also the critical public services that keep us safe and uphold our quality of life. Based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the preCivil War United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty personified by a malevolent slave owner, as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist will forever alter his life.

Hercule Poirot, the best detective in the world, decides to travel on the Orient Express. The train accidentally gets stopped because of a small avalanche. Little did he know that a murder was planned and that a person on this train was capable of committing such crime.

Coronavirus quarantine to be lowered to 10 days The Spanish Health Ministry is finalising a deal with regional governments to reduce quarantine times from 14 days to 10 for close contacts of people who tested positive for Covid-19. Health Minister Salvador Illa has confirmed that central and regional authorities are discussing the measure and said that “there is a broad consensus, though not a unanimous agreement.” The proposal could be adopted shortly, the minister added. Last Tuesday, the Catalan government announced a reduced quarantine period for close contacts beginning this week. According to the Health Ministry’s existing protocol, a person who tests positive for Covid19 may reduce his or her isolation period to 10 days if more than 72 hours have elapsed without any fever or symptoms. Meanwhile, close contacts must quarantine for 14 days, although a shorter period is also contemplated if a PCR test is done on the 10th day and it comes back negative. Under the new plan, close

contacts of a positive case would be able to end their quarantine period after 10 days without the need for a PCR test. The scientific community came up with the 14-day isolation period at the beginning of the pandemic because that is the maximum incubation period for the coronavirus. But new evidence has emerged in recent

months suggesting that after the 10th day, the chances of contagion are substantially reduced. To this must be added the social and economic difficulties of quarantining contacts, all of which has led government officials to consider shorter

periods that would be easier to comply with. On September 7, the head of Spain’s Coordination Center for Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, explained that Spain was considering the option of reducing quarantine times to 10 days. Spain is not the first country to consider reducing quarantine times to make them easier to observe. A couple of weeks ago, France announced it would halve quarantine periods from 14 to seven days for people with symptoms of Covid19, those whose PCR tests come back negative, and those in close contact with positive cases. A committee of experts advising the French government said that in some parts of the country the quarantines were being unevenly observed, and that available scientific evidence shows that the likelihood of contagion beyond the eighth day is very low. The Netherlands have also reduced quarantine times to 10 days.

Joe Wicks says he's struggling with his mental health Joe Wicks has opened up on how his mental health has been affected after Boris Johnson’s announcement detailing new lockdown restrictions. Last Tuesday night, the Prime Minister addressed the nation with the new measures, which include a 10pm closing time for pubs and restaurants and fines for not wearing masks or following rules increasing to £200. In a video to his Instagram followers, Wicks, 35, opened up on his struggles by telling fans they "are not alone". "This is such a tough time emotionally, spiritually and mentally and I think it's important to talk about it,” he said. "I've just finished watching the press conference with Boris Johnson about the new UK COVID restrictions and I can really feel for the first time this is really starting to take affect on my mental health now, it's really starting to bring me down. "I'm finding it hard to be optimistic, I'm finding it confusing. I feel like I don't understand and can't even comprehend where the end is." Johnson has said the rules could stay in place for the next six

months following an increase in coronavirus cases in the UK. The fitness coach went on to explain how the measures were "distancing" him from loved ones and that being apart from them was having a negative impact on him. He added that it was important to talk about struggling in the new circumstances and to keep physically active. "If you go the opposite way and you wallow in it and sit on your sofa, watch TV and you eat junk

food or you turn to drugs or alcohol and you neglect your physical health, your mental health is just going to deteriorate even quicker," he said. The father-of-two stressed the importance of exercise throughout lockdown with his daily PE lessons for children. After he brought the sessions to a close after 18 weeks he said he was feeling "confused and lost" without the daily streamed workouts and has since brought ‘PE with Joe’ back for a special one-off.

Managing chronic illness Exercising regularly and not smoking or drinking can help people live longer, even if they're suffering from chronic medical conditions, according to a new study. A healthy lifestyle has long been associated with a longer lifespan, however, there has been very little research which looks into how lifestyle

factors affect those with multimorbidity - living with two or more long-term mental or physical health conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), asthma, cancer, depression, migraine, diabetes, and angina. Researchers from the University of Leicester investigated this relationship by analysing data from 93,736 middleaged adults who had two or more of 36

chronic conditions and were part of the UK Biobank study which collected participants' data for up to 10 years. They found that a very healthy lifestyle is associated with up to 6.3 years longer life for men and 7.6 years for women, despite their chronic illnesses, compared with those given the lowest lifestyle score. Not smoking had the biggest

influence on lifespan, as the team found smokers at age 45 lived five to six years less than non-smokers, while regular physical exercise was linked with 2.5 years longer life expectancy in men and 1.9 longer years in women. The benefits of a healthy diet and lower alcohol intake were less significant. "More individuals are living with

multiple chronic conditions, impacting their health and daily lives," said lead author Yogini Chudasama. "We found a healthy lifestyle, in particular abstinence from smoking, increased life expectancy by as much as seven years. Our study has important implications for the public's health, as we hope our findings have shown that it's never too late to make vital lifestyle changes."

Vegan Cupcakes If you’re vegan, cooking for vegan friends or perhaps just looking to try new plant based alternatives, why not try these Vegan Cupcakes with cream ‘sheese’ frosting. Regular cream cheese frosting uses Philadelphia style cream cheese, but we found a pretty good alternative (available in Carrefour and other supermarkets here in Spain) made by Sheese. Look out for a blue carton, priced at around €3. For the frosting... 500g icing sugar, sieved 125g vegan butter or spread (flora buttery works well, available from Overseas Supermarkets) at room temperature 125g cream ‘sheese’ Method Sieve the icing sugar, and beat together with the butter and ‘sheese’ – you can add some vanilla essence if you wish, or food colouring For the cupcakes... Ingredients 375ml unsweetened soy milk

1tsp apple cider vinegar 350g cake flour (look for ‘Harina de Bizcocho’) 300g sugar 1tsp baking powder 1.5tsp salt 125ml mild tasting oil (such as canola) 1tbsp vanilla extract Method Preheat the oven to 180C and line a 12cup muffin pan with paper liners. If you like, you can also spray the liners with a little oil or cooking spray as well to prevent sticking. Combine the soy milk and vinegar in a bowl or jug, stir to combine and set aside to curdle. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt until combined. Add the milk/vinegar mixture, canola oil and vanilla to the bowl. Mix until well combined with no large lumps. Fill the liners 3/4 of the way full and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cupcakes cool completely before topping with the frosting.

Breakfast tea with a twist Yorkshire Tea has launched a "mighty morning" brew which tastes like jam on toast. The new product, a black tea with a taste of toast crumbs and jam, will be available to buy across Europe from October. Writing on Twitter, Yorkshire Tea said: "This is not a drill! Repeat: this is not a drill! "It's a real tea that tastes like real tea, but also toast and also jam." Yorkshire Tea describes the new product as "a mighty morning brew with a lipsmacking smattering of toasty, jammy loveliness, ready to send you into the day with a spring in your step, a smile in your soul and absolutely no jam on your chin". It is best served with a splash of milk, the company said. The inventor of the tea, Kate

Halloran, said: "This new brew has been a long time in the making and I absolutely can’t wait for everyone to try it. We hope you love it as much as we do." But the launch of the new brew prompted strong reactions from tea lovers. "Why not just make a cup of tea and make some toast and jam to go with it? Toast and jam isn’t difficult to make," one Twitter user asked. Another wrote: "Seriously though... after being a fussy Yorkshire tea drinker all my life... the blend is not as strong or rich these days. "Don’t lose the quality of the classics for a little frivolity with a novelty." A third said: "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. I wish you an

appropriate amount of luck with this abomination." A fourth wrote: "Kinda horrified can't lie." But some customers agreed to give the new brew a try. "I'll give it a go, doubt it will replace the almighty malt biscuit tea for me though," one said. Another eager customer wrote: "Where can I find this in Liverpool?" Yorkshire Tea previously launched a Biscuit Brew, which "creates a wave of happiness big enough to power an entire human being" The company also sells a Bedtime Brew and Breakfast Brew in its collection of products The Toast & Jam Brew, which comes in a bright pink box, will be available to buy in other supermarkets later in the year.

I just don't love him anymore I don’t think I ever loved my second husband, but he looked after me and my children when my first husband left me. I think I was so desperate that I grabbed the first man who was willing to take me on. We are now both very unhappy. We have slept in separate rooms for a very long time and we almost have separate lives, but most people still see us as a couple and I think they would be shocked if they knew the truth. I feel desperately unfulfilled and think it would be so sad to spend the rest of my life in this lonely situation. I have been wondering whether to try to find someone else to provide the companionship I miss. I know he has not sought the company of other women, as all he does is watch TV and eat and drink all day. I just don’t fancy him at all, and there is little feeling – not even as friends, and I think he would admit to that also. I agree it would be too sad to spend the rest of your life in this situation, but having an affair behind your husband’s back isn’t the answer. Ask him one day, what he thinks about the state of your relationship. It is not normal for a married couple to just co-exist in the same house and live separate lives. You might find he is just as miserable. Your longer letter tells me that your children are now grown and have left home, so there is nothing holding you back. Marriage guidance counselling will help if you both want to give it another try, but as you say you don’t think you ever loved your husband, then perhaps it’s time to move on. Don’t worry about what other people think – true friends will understand, and relationships break down all the time.

Using Headlights During Daylight It is not uncommon to see vehicles on the road displaying bright white lights on the front, but these are usually different to the ones referred to as “headlights”. Since 2011, all new cars and trucks sold in EU were required to have Daytime Running Lights (DRL) installed, which turn on automatically with the engine, in accordance with a new European directive designed to improve road safety. The rule also became mandatory for trucks and buses from August 2012. The DRL is a new method of illumination, with low energy consumption, but is not designed to provide additional lighting for the driver, but rather to improve “significantly” the vehicle’s visibility to other road users. Studies on the use of this lighting show, according to the EU executive, road users including pedestrians and cyclists, more clearly detect vehicles equipped with daytime running lights than those who do not have this device. DRL are not a replacement for headlights. They do not illuminate the road ahead and on most vehicles, they only illuminate the front, not the rear of the vehicle. However, we are talking today about the circumstances in which headlights must be turned on during the day. There are certain times and locations when you must turn your lights on during the day, these locations are

indicated by a white pictogram of headlights on a blue circle sign. You will see these as you approach tunnels for example, as we spoke about last week. In addition, during the winter months when the sun is lower and visibility can become problematic as a result, the DGT recommend having headlights on during the day to achieve the same increase of visibility as is achieved through the DRL. Under normal circumstances however, there is no mandatory requirement to have your headlights on during the day, and that also applies when driving through road works. Article 104 of the Reglamento General Circulacion, refers to the use of headlights during the day, and explains how you do not have to turn on your lights when there are road repairs on the road, but details the situations when it is compulsory. All vehicles travelling on a reversible lane, sometimes called a bi-directional lane, which can at times be used by traffic in either direction. These sorts of lanes are common near to city centres, where the flow of traffic can alter to give more space for vehicles in one direction, such as towards the centre of the city at the start of a working day, and then away from the city at the end of the day. Although the accessibility of the lanes will be clearly marked, there is a risk to other road users and so increased illumination is of benefit. A circumstantial additional lane, such

as when a lane is created with a series of cones to avoid an obstruction or to improve the traffic flow in one direction. These “circumstantial” lanes are often created at busy holiday times,

allowing the road management to create extra lanes to ease congestion at certain times, such as when many people are expected to leave a city to go on holiday at the coast, for example. They are also often used to bypass an obstruction that may pose a problem for the normal flow of traffic, such as a brokendown truck that is disabled and cannot move. A lane normally used by traffic in the opposite direction, known as a contraflow. These lanes are frequently used on

motorways when traffic is diverted onto a lane on the opposite carriageway for example.

Check Your Lights

TOYOTA MR2 check all the lights on a regular basis, even those not used too often, such as fog lights. It is better to have an assistant to help you do this so that one of you can be in the car operating the switches, the other on the outside monitoring the results. Remember, check every light, headlights (including full beam), indicators and hazard lights (front and back), rear lights and brake lights, reversing and fog lights, and the lights that illuminate the number plate at the rear. If your vehicle is a modern one you might also have Daytime Running Lights installed. Although these lights are often more reliable than traditional

lights, on account of them being LED´s, they should also be checked on a regular basis. If you don´t have anybody to help you can still carry out the checks by using reflective surfaces such as shop windows or other parked vehicles. Make sure you do this in an isolated location though as you don´t want to confuse other motorists. If any of the lights have failed, make sure you get them replaced immediately as it is an offence to drive with defective lights. It is also recommended that light bulbs are replaced in pairs, as they do tend to dim in time, so if one headlight isn´t working, for example, replace both bulbs.

You have probably already noticed the nights getting longer, as daylight starts to fade earlier than during summer, and although we are a just a few weeks away from the clocks going back, it´s a good time to check that all of the lights on our vehicles are fully working. Until quite recently, all vehicles had to carry a spare set of bulbs, this is no longer the case. The Spanish government recognised that changing a bulb is no longer a simple task, and in many cases can only be done by qualified mechanics, and so carrying a spare set was pointless, if the ability to change the bulbs had been removed. However, it is still important to

Tips to avoid the garage Simple car repairs and maintenance can cost a fortune at the mechanic’s garage. But if you’re willing to put in the time and energy, you can save money and do many of these tasks yourself. Here are tips for performing common car repairs and maintenance yourself so you can avoid going to the garage.

Checking fluids You should check your fluid levels at least once a month. This is easily the most preventative maintenance task you can do yourself. So, once a month, check the levels for the engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Also, check the engine coolant levels every six months. And if any of these fluid levels are low, you can quickly fill them up on your own. How to change your oil Check the type and amount of oil you’ll need in your owner’s manual, says Dan Edmunds, in his article for Edmunds.com. Make sure the engine and oil are warm, but not hot. Raise your car and remove the undercover if needed. While wearing gloves, remove the oil filler cap. And remove the drain plug with a wrench to drain the oil into a drain pan. Clean and inspect the drain plug, and replace the washer if needed before tightening the drain plug back in place with a wrench. Remove the oil filter with the drain pan underneath. Clean away oil from the oil filter area with rags, dab oil on the new filter’s O-ring, and screw in the new oil filter. Add new oil to the oil filler—about one quart less than the recommended amount. Replace the oil cap and start your engine. Run for 30 seconds, shut it off, and check the area underneath for leaks. Once your car is level on the ground, check the oil levels and add more if needed.

sand the entire dent, while roughing and feathering paint around the edges. Use a clean rag to clean the area with wax remover and wipe with a tack cloth. Mix the body filler with hardener (according to instructions) using a spread-and-fold motion on a clean mixing board or old cookie sheet. Press some filler onto the rough metal dent, spreading to form a

tight coat to burp out air and wet the metal. Next, apply a fill coat. Sand the filler to match the contours of the body using 80- and 180-grit paper. Also, feather the edges. Apply a finishing glaze to the patch, and sand with 180- and 320grit paper. Spray with primer and paint. How to fix rust According to experts you can rust remove before painting using several methods. Sand off surface rust 150-grit with sandpaper. Use to 600-grit feather the painted edges. And gently use a spot-sanding tool to remove rust from larger areas. Wipe dust with a clean rag. Apply several thin coats of rust converter with a foam brush, allowing to dry and switching brushes between coats. Or, use a paint syringe to apply the converter on scratches.

How to replace headlights If a headlight burns out, pop the hood and remove the power connector from behind the headlight. Next, remove the dust cover and clips that hold the bulb in place (if applicable). Grasp the bulb housing and gently pull and wiggle until it comes loose. Replace the old bulb with a new one, reinstall the dust cover, and reconnect the power. Test the lights from inside your car. For replacing taillights, follow these steps but through the trunk or rear hatch of the car instead.

How to fix chipped and scratched paint When fixing paint, order touch-up paint and a clear coat from your car dealer using your VIN. Clean your car, let it dry, and apply wax and grease remover with a clean rag to the areas you’re fixing. Pick away loose paint with a screwdriver or putty knife. Shake or stir the paint. Apply several thin coats of paint using an artist’s brush, allowing to dry, cleaning the brush with solvent, and lightly sanding with 600-grit between each coat. Use a micro-applicator slightly smaller than the chip to apply paint in several thin layers. For scratches, use a paint syringe to apply a small amount of paint to a brush head and guide the brush along the scratch while applying light pressure.

How to fix dents According to an article published in Reader’s Digest, you can fix dents with the following steps. First, remove paint in and around the dent using 24-grit sandpaper. Switch to 80-grit and hand-

How to check your brake system Before checking your brake system, make sure your car is on a level surface. Check the brake fluid levels and colour. If the fluid is black, you need to replace it. When you’re using your brakes, check for

abnormal noises, pulling to one side, or a brake pedal that feels light but with sudden moments of heaviness. All of these are signs that your brake system needs attention. Worn brake pads can damage other parts of your system and compromise your ability to brake properly. When replacing brake pads, complete one side at a time, and turn the steering wheel so the wheel you’re working on is angled out for better access to the brakes. Next, remove the wheel and slider bolt. Pivot the caliper up and slide out the old brake pads. Replace the retaining clips and slide in the new brake pads. Retract the pistons, monitor the brake fluid level, reposition the caliper, reinstall the slider bolt, and repeat on the other side. Lastly, test-drive your car in safe conditions. How to change spark plugs Spark plugs keep your engine running well. And if a spark plug stops working properly, you will have problems with the performance of your car. Your owner’s manual will say how many spark plugs you need along with the required type. Once the engine is cool, you can change one spark plug at a time by gently removing the wire from the spark plug. Next, use a spark plug socket and torque wrench to remove the old spark plug. Measure the gap [using a gapping tool] and install the new spark plug. Once you reconnect the boot, you can repeat these

steps with the next spark plug. How to repair a chipped windshield While cracks will require windshield replacement, you can fix chips easily and prevent them from getting worse. Simply use a windshield crack repair kit that uses adhesive patches, advises Popular Mechanics. Follow the directions on the kit you end up buying. Just make sure the windshield is clean, dry, and near room temperature before starting the repair. You can use a bit of lighter fluid or acetone to clean and dry the surface quickly before starting. How to fix a slow-moving power window You can fix sticky, slow-moving power windows by lubricating the window channels. Use an aerosol can of dry Teflon spray, which sprays on as a liquid and dries as a slippery Teflon powder. Shake the can vigorously, insert the straw into the nozzle, aim it into the window channels, and press the trigger to soak the front and rear channels until the spray runs down into the door. Wait a few minutes before operating the window up and down to spread the Teflon spray throughout the channels. Having said all that, we would always recommend using a professional mechanic for your vehicle. Check out the adverts on our motors pages for details.

Elche CF, La Liga Wake Up Call Elche CF return to La Liga after a 5 year absence following their miraculous promotion only weeks ago. Along with Barcelona and Sevilla, they were given a reprieve of 2 weeks, so played their first game of the season on Saturday. The 3 week long pre season has been a whirlwind. The manager Pacheta, who had guided the team through 2 promotions during the last 3 seasons was asked to leave, as were a number of the players. The clubs major shareholder Christian Brafarnik, a very influential Argentinian football agent, was ready to bring in his preferred men, both on and off the pitch. First to join was Jorge Almiron a South American manager, an exciting addition until it was announced that his qualifications are not recognised in Spain, so he will have to sit in the stands until he has his Spanish equivalent. Cifu returned to the club in defence, and the club transfer record was smashed when the young 23 year old Guti who was signed for 4.5 million from Real Zaragoza. Elche's first match kicked off at home in the Martinez Valero against Real Sociedad, last years

Copa del Rey finalists (the winner is not yet known as the match is still to be played). Elche had a small squad of 17 players to choose from. Cifu, Guti and Morente made their debuts up front. The opposition were bound to be tough, they have spent the last 10 years in La Liga and they had their new signing, ex Man City David Silva. From the whistle, Real Sociedad were in control which was reflected in the 35% to 65% possession ratio. The opposition peppered the goal of Edgar Badia, and his team mates did not help themselves as they passed the ball around the back line, often giving it away and immediately putting themselves under pressure. On 20 minutes Elche had a golden chance to snatch a shock lead, unfortunately Josan angled the shoot directly at the Sociedad goalie. The half time score was 0-0, a

good achievement. The pep talk was given to the team by Assistant Coach Jesus Munoz, as Jorge Almiron was confined to the stands. The second half was a baptism of fire which highlighted Elche CF's lack of fitness, experience and time to bond as a team. At 55 minutes Portugues scored from an acute angle. At 77 minutes the referrer awarded a soft penalty, which was converted by Januzaj, an ex Man Utd player from 2011 to 2013. Then 4 minutes into extra time Lopez Alcaide flew down the right and smash the ball into the top corner past an exhausted Edgar. Final Score 0-3 Elche will travel to Eibar on Wednesday 30th, a must win game and the first opportunity for Elche to face the team which profited from their La Liga relegated in 2014 after they were found guilty of financial wrong doing. Las Ramblas Golf Society It was ‘Fiesta’ time this week (although for many it would become ‘Siesta’ time) as we played out the first knockout round of this year’s Individual Singles Match play. There were quite a few surprises in round one which included Reg Akehurst seeing off hot favourite Graham Murray 4&2 and Nigel Price coming out tops over Liz Robertson 6&5. To be fair to Liz though she did have to concede some eleven shots! Reg came up against Paul Brown in round two and it didn’t

go his way this time as Paul won 5&4. Lindsay Forbes sailed through with a 7&5 win over Hendrick Oldenziel whilst I just about managed to scrape through, winning by one hole against new member Dave Connolly. Nigel once again triumphed over one of our lady members. This time it was Benedicte Kruse who lost out 4&3. Conceding 24 shots Terry Field still managed to ease his way through with a 4&3 win over Dave Pulling. The other players through to fight another day were Ken Robertson, Pete Dunn

and Mark Western. Friday and it was quarter finals day. Having got through to this stage by just the one hole in the last round I lost to Mark Western by the exact same margin. Nigel Price managed to take Terry Field (playing off scratch) to the 19th hole before losing out. Lindsay Forbes kept his good run of form going with a 4&3 win over Pete Dunn whilst Paul Brown overcame Ken Robertson also with a 4&3 win. The semi-finals will take place next Friday so watch this space! Por ultimo, in the words of Peter Dobereiner, ‘Half of golf is fun, the other half is putting.’ Pues hasta la semane que viene Peter Reffell

The Summer is over The summer of 2020 is now officially over, with all its trials and tribulations, the tourists have gone, the children are back at school. So, what are you going to do now? The Playa Flamenca “walking Football Club” are still here and playing. The club plays on

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT PART I If he can clear some space, Roman has promised he can try and get Declan Rice from West Ham - in the classic case of eight out, one in.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Is this the penultimate ramble of this somewhat weird transfer window? You can bet your bottom dollar it is - this time next week Jim White will be donning the tie and we’ll all be reminiscing back to the days when ‘Deadline Day’ was exciting and things happened. Sensible clubs, not that there are that many kicking around, will, of course, have all their business done well in advance of the slamming-shut sound only a transfer window can make - but until that moment the rumour mill is still grinding. Chelsea still need to commence Operation Clearout under the loose assumption that they cannot be due to sign anyone else. Edouard Mendy is the latest to come through the entrance but there is quite the queue forming at the exit. Frank Lampard is still hoping there is someone out there who hasn’t seen Kepa play in 2020 and might take the beleaguered shot-stopper far, far away from London. Antonio Rudiger seems to have been the last man standing when Chelsea played an impromptu game of musical chairs to see which central defender would be leaving the club and Lamps is very keen to field offers for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley - and that’s not even mentioning the 10 players he has probably forgotten are still registered to Stamford Bridge.

Also in dire need to get a few players off their books are Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he wants shot of Alexandre Lacazette if only so we never have to see that celebration with Yo-Pierre happen again. The smell of Torreira is going to be used as bait to get Thomas Partey from Atletico, finally - offering Simeone a Uruguayan who loves a bit of a dust-up is currently en vogue. If Arteta can get rid of Mustafi, Guendozi and Ozil by this time next week he’ll be a very happy man, especially if he is then able to get his hands on Jorginho who is, by all accounts, available from Chelsea even though he really doesn’t take up that much room. Liverpool are very keen not to make Fabinho at the back a thing so would happily be the club to finally sign Koulibaly from Napoli - a player who was probably quite good when all the transfer chatter around him started four seasons ago. Manchester City are prioritising a central defender over the fact that they have no fit central strikers aged more than 17 and are on the verge of snaffling Ruben Diaz from Benfica for fifty-odd big ones. The added bonus for Peppy G here is that Nico Otamendi is going the other way. Jose Mourinho would still like to spend

money on a number 9 that will only play one month in the season and his current target is Wout Weghorst - all that tells us is that if his target list is in alphabetical order then he is running out of options. Naturally, we all thought it was Ndombele that Jose had daggers for but it turns out we were wrong - the early bromance between Mou and Dele Alli was nothing more than for the cameras and Alli is being touted out with almost as much urgency as Kepa from Chelsea. PSG are not ruling it out, meaning Dele will be available on loan come January and we all know how much Spurs love bringing back ex-players on loan. Manchester United are still hanging around Borussia Dortmund in the hope that they do a complete U-turn on everything they have consistently said since news of United’s first Sancho enquiry broke. But, if they cannot get Sancho, then they’d love a bit of Dominic Calvert-Lewin - a move that makes perfect sense given he’s been quite good for five minutes and isn’t very similar to Romelu Lukaku in terms of style of play at all. Whilst flicking through his list of players called Dembele, imagine Ed Woodward’s delight when he realised there was another one on the market. With Ousmane Dembele as unlikely as Sancho, United are now believed to have the hots for Moussa Dembele, a different player in almost every imaginable way. For a team that got relegated, Norwich City have done superbly well in getting

high-level interest for their defenders right-back Max Aarons is wanted by Barcelona. Everton now having a decent midfield means that homegrown, distinctive only because of his hair, Tom Davies is now looking to move on - and Southampton are interested in making him the follicle opposite to Oriel Romelu. West Ham and Leicester are both competing for Burnley’s James Tarkowski and have the regularly mentioned in this column Wesley Fofana as their respective Plan Bs. Surely they can just get together over a smoothie and sort it out like gentlemen? Well, maybe a video call in David Moyes’ case, eh? Sean Dyche made Dale Stephens feel 20-foot-tall when announcing he ‘was the kind of signing that shows where we are financially’ or words to that effect. A more realistic summary would have been that he is exactly the sort of midfielder that Sean Dyche gets excited by - British and hard-working. WBA fans will be hoping that scoring three against Chelsea will have put Slaven Bilic off the sack-inducing plans to sign Emmanuel Adebayor. And finally, it was all very well Joe Hart noticing the goals were a bit too small in Spurs’ Europa League tie in the week, but given his recent track record wouldn’t he have been better off keeping shtum?

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT PART II come away empty-handed - mind you, had they been completely emptyhanded then maybe Maupay wouldn’t have given away that VAR-checked penalty. United were pedestrian - Nemanja Matic started, so I will let you do the maths. Brighton were bright, creative and attracted to hitting the woodwork whenever and wherever possible. They rattled De Gea’s frame five times - an unwanted Premier League record beating the previous three. As poor as United were, Marcus Rashford’s goal was as delightful as it was damaging to Ben White’s growing reputation as the English Van Dijk. A weekend of contentious penalty decisions then - well, apart from at the Etihad where all three were completely nailed on. Jamie Vardy must have been delighted that Brendan chose to give him ten minutes rest at the end of Leicester’s win over Man City as Mendy dragged down James Maddison in the area. Vardy had already scored two from the spot giving him another hat-trick against Peppy G’s side. There’s only one other player who has scored a treble against a Guardiola team - none other than Messi. Riyad Mahrez had given City the lead with a goal which makes you wonder why he only ever uses his left foot before the Jamie Vardy show really got

underway. And given the way Kyle Walker defended for the first spot kick, it is worth pointing out to Gareth Southgate that we do have one or two options at right-back nowadays. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has consistently reminded us what Manchester United are about as a club, the legacy of Sir Alex Ferguson and the history started by Sir Matt Busby. Yet, even Fergie didn’t manage to get penalties given for the club after the final whistle - a final whistle sounding after nine minutes of injury time. Even the most blinkered of Red Devil would have to admit that Brighton were a tad unfortunate to

Regular readers will know that I usually have nothing against decisions that make Jose Mourinho go mad but even I couldn’t find words to describe the daftness in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle. Handball decisions are clearly this season’s marginal offsides for the moaning masses - of which I am a fully signed up member. There is no way on this planet that was a penalty against Eric Dier. Never in a million years. And, in fairness, Steve Bruce agreed. Dele Alli should probably keep out of the manager’s way for the next few days. Did anyone notice if Gareth Bale was watching the game? They didn’t

mention it on TV. Don’t forget folks, every week of the Premier League season is a week nearer Frank Lampard’s Chelsea looking for a new manager. At 3-0 down after just half an hour at the Hawthorns, you wondered whether Roman was going to sack Lamps via Zoom at half-time.

nonsense’. And if a mild-mannered gent like Hodgson is getting irate then we have a problem.

You could almost feel for Lampard - he will have gone into the game thinking, ‘no drama, Big Willy and Thiago Silva will sort it out for us’. Yeah, about that. I think Brazil’s captain just got an introduction to the Premier League. It started off with Marcos Alonso, surely just waiting for Ben Chilwell to be fit so he can have an extended holiday, weakly assisting Callum Robinson’s first and then Thiago Silva realising you need a longer stud away to West Brom. Luckily for Chelsea, they were able to demonstrate why they have invested so much in their attack as the academy boys dragged them back into it Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi sorting it out. If you were not convinced that 2020 is just a little bit weird, but ahead of Leicester pulling City’s pants down Everton were top of the table. What was even more bizarre was the fact that this was a disciplined, digging in, backs to the wall win against Palace away from home. Sure, there was another one of those crazy little handball decisions - in fairness, Uncle Roy found the word I was looking for earlier in calling them ‘a

Sheffield United seem to have an early dose of the second season syndrome and it turns out that there is a Premier League striker hiding in Patrick Bamford’s body after all. Up at Turf Moor, Burnley huffed and puffed and Danny Ings scored for Southampton. Standard. West Ham. Terrible when David Moyes is on the touchline. Decent when Moyseh is running things via video link. What does that tell you? Alan Irvine is now two for two if you include the midweek hammering of Hull in the cup. Sure, Irvine protests that the gaffer is running things from a distance but surely it cannot just be a coincidence that the Hammers are playing with flair and freedom? Wolves were blown away by J Bowen hitting the bullseye.
