Suspect arrested following fatal stabbing See Main Advert on page 30-31

A manhunt got underway at the weekend after a young British man was stabbed to death in Quesada late

on Thursday night. A young man, named in British media as Ben Nesbitt from Southport, was stabbed to death following a fight at an address on an urbanisation in Ciudad Quesada. The victim, thought to be 22 years old was found in the street at around 3am with fatal stab wounds to the neck. It is thought he ran outside to try and find help, but collapsed as a result of his wounds and died at the scene. Sources believe that the victim and his attacker had both been invited to a party at the house with their partners. An argument broke out which resulted in a fight, leading to

the fatal stabbing. The suspect is alleged to have fled the scene, prompting the Guardia Civil to launch a manhunt. Over the weekend, locals were asked to be on the lookout for a black BMW 520D Sport with a British registration number in connection with the crime. Members of the public were advised not to approach the car but to report its whereabouts to police. News emerged on Monday that the car and driver had been apprehended at the weekend in Girona where it is believed he was caught en route out of Spain, in an apparent attempt to escape the country.

What your eyes can reveal about your health MILLIONS of people have missed out on vital eye tests during lockdown, potentially putting their eyesight and wider health at risk, warn Specsavers Ópticas in the lead up to World Sight Day on October 8th.

However, it is also important to keep up your regular eye checks – even if you don’t think there is anything wrong with your vision – because something could be happening which you are completely unaware of.’

Lisa James, store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar, says: ‘Fifty percent of sight loss is avoidable with early detection, however, during the pandemic many people may not have had access to these diagnostic tests. Not only does this mean their eyesight is at risk but potentially other aspects of their health too. ‘That’s because while there are severalchanges we may notice in our vision which could be a sign of a wider health condition, there are also some things that can only be detected during an eye test. ‘It is important to make an appointment with your optometrist if you are seeing certain things, such as red spots on the front of your eyes, persistent floaters, or notice changes with your eyes such as blurred vision, or yellowing of the eyes. These things can denote health issues from high blood pressure and cholesterol, to liver issues or diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy - In its early stages diabetic retinopathy usually doesn’t pose any noticeable symptoms, so an eye test can pick it up before you do. As the condition affects small blood vessels in the eye, damaging the retina, your optometrist can look for early characteristic changes, such as tiny leaks from these damaged vessels. High blood pressure - During an eye test, your optometrist might spot signs of high blood pressure, through observing the eye’s blood vessels to see if they have narrowed, changed shape or started leaking.

For World Sight Day, Specsavers Ópticas has shared four conditions that can be detected during an eye test to support the IAPB’s mission to ask people to ‘pledge to take an eye exam – and encourage others to do the same’ this October: Glaucoma - Glaucoma is often symptomless as it develops so gradually. That’s why it is often referred to as the silent thief of sight. It is one of the leading causes of blindness, however, if it is identified in its early stages it can be successfully managed. Regular eye examinations are key to detecting it.

Tumours - While an eye test can look for any cancers of the eye such as melanomas, it will sometimes reveal signs of possible brain tumours. Swelling in the optic nerves can be visible during an eye test and can sometimes indicate that a brain tumour is present. Specsavers Ópticas stores can be found in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca. Fake gas man arrested National Police this week arrested a 35 year old Spanish man in Torrevieja, accused of the crimes of fraud and theft. The man is accused committing a string of robberies in the homes of elderly people. The man led the victims to believe that he was a technician calling to look at the electrical or gas system of the home. When allowed entry to the houses, the man is alleged to have stolen valuables and money. The detainee is part of a criminal gang, known to police, that had specialized in this type of crime. Police say the gang chose its victims carefully, specifically targeting elderly people who live alone. For many years, the Costa Blanca People has made our readers aware of the ‘gas man’ scam – where an alleged installer or technician will call to the house and carry out a quick repair or check of a gas installation, and charge an exorbitant fee. This scam, though similar, is slightly more sinister because after identifying their victim, the gang would phone the house in advance and make an appointment, intimating that there was an urgent issue with the home’s gas or electrical system. Once the appointment was made, the criminals would arrive at the house at the agreed time and so, the elderly homeowners would unwittingly think that the caller was a legitimate technician. Once inside the house, they would ask the owner go out to the balcony or even outside to the garden, alleging a possible danger due to the handling of electrical elements or gas. They would then take the opportunity to search the house looking for money

and valuables. They even stole credit cards and bank cards, in some cases managing to con the victim into revealing their PIN number. With regard to the recent arrest, the Costa Blanca People spoke to Torrevieja West Neighbourhood Crime Watch. The president, Doug Allen said “We are very concerned at the continuing threats by these scammers who prey on the elderly and ex-pats, who may not be aware of the scam and can easily be fooled by these official and plausible sounding robbers. By gaining entry into a home, they can both thieve immediately or case the home for valuable objects and security and then return later to break in. Torrevieja West NHCW would like to see more pro-active information made available when such scammers are known to be in the area, warning posters and shop notices would be helpful.” Doug continued, “The message we give to our members is simple and clear never allow anyone who does not have an appointment to enter your home. If they are genuine, be it the need to have a gas check, to lay telephone cables over

your roof or any of the other many reasons they seem to find to gain access to your home, ask to see their ID and contact their company to confirm they are genuine and have good reason to enter your home. When anyone does enter your home, never allow them to just wander around, stay with them to ensure they only go where needed. Aside from these fake gas men scammers, there are others that try to gain entry by knocking on your door - asking for a drink of water, fake charity scammers asking you to sign a form to support them, asking directions etc. Sadly, in the current climate, thieving has increased and we all need to be more aware of the risks around us.” As this gang had been making appointments to prey on their elderly victims, our best advice to elderly readers living alone is to be cautious. It would be unusual, but not unheard of, for a gas or electricity company to proactively contact a client for a system check (usually, the onus is on the homeowner to ask for this revision). If you are unsure, it might help to ask a friend or neighbour to sit with you during the appointment.

Learn Spanish, for free! Torrevieja Town Hall has announced that it has been awarded a grant by the Diputación de Alicante in order to be able to provide a free Spanish language course for foreigners. Those on the padron in Torrevieja can apply for a free place on the course, limited to 60 people with all social distancing protocols in place. Classes will be divided by current level of Spanish. Organisers hope to begin classes in October and as places are

limited, those interested are urged to register as soon as possible as this is expected to be a popular course (especially as it is being offered completely for free). To find out more or to register for your place, contact Jean Paul Mulero of the International Residents Office by email at torreviejaoari@gmail.com or call in to the Concejalía de Residentes Internacionales, Plaza de Capdepont s/n, 03181 Torrevieja.

Guardia catch ‘most wanted’ criminal in Orihuela Costa The Guardia Civil has arrested one of the UK's most wanted fugitives in Orihuela Costa. The man is wanted by British authorities for crimes of kidnapping, blackmail, illegal possession of weapons and causing serious injuries. In Spain he has been arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health, a crime against road safety for reckless driving and a crime of causing damage. The Guardia Civil, following an operation related to drug trafficking in Torrevieja captured the fugitive who is described as "extremely dangerous and violent”. The investigation began last summer, when a drug deal was detected in a leisure area of

the coastal town. The agents went to stop the occupants of a vehicle, who were related to the investigation, but they fled, causing a police chase that lasted for several kilometres. Along the way, in addition to trying to ram the police vehicle, they endangered the lives of more than one person, walking through the streets of Torrevieja. The chase ended when the man crashed his car into a tree after driving inside a playground. Despite the blow, the driver managed to escape, while the passenger was immediately arrested. From that moment, the Guardia Civil’s work has focused on fully identifying the missing driver. To this end they consulted

with the UK authorities and British reports revealed that the person they were looking for was extremely dangerous and violent and one of the most wanted fugitives in his home country. With all the information obtained, they focused on surveillance and monitoring of people who may have some relationship with him, until they found his current hiding place in an Orihuela Costa urbanisation. Before he changed address again, police made their move. The 36year-old resisted arrest and tried to escape in his vehicle. Seeing that he was unable to get away from the officers, he reached for a can of pepper spray to attack the officers, but finally he was overpowered and arrested.

Man arrested for rental scam Police have arrested a 39-yearold Spanish man in Torrevieja in relation to a string of crimes, including robbery from a construction site, two aggravated robberies inside victims’ homes, two crimes of usurpation of housing and three of fraud. Three of the charges are related to crimes in which he stole household appliances and construction materials.

The man is believed to have run a bogus rental scam. He accessed houses by forcing the lock, changing locks to his own and then allegedly rented the

houses to third parties. In one brazen incident, he arrived to show a prospective renter the house, and opened the door using tools, claiming that he had left the keys inside. Days later, the tenant, who had paid €200 deposit, suspected that the house was not his and, after trying to contact him and not getting it, decided to file a complaint.

Madrid goes into partial lockdown The weekend saw police control travel in and out of the Spanish capital, as those living in Madrid had additional restrictions put in place after becoming Europe’s biggest second coronavirus wave hot spot. The two-week ban imposed by Spain’s national government on reluctant regional officials started on Friday night at 10pm. The measures prohibit all non-essential trips in and out of the capital and nine of its suburbs / affecting around 4.8 million people. Restaurants must close at 11pm and shops at 10pm, and reduce occupancy to 50 percent of capacity. Spain’s Socialist prime minister Pedro Sanchez said the steps are “critical” to stop a surging caseload and prevent a repeat of the scenes of March and April that saw hospitals overrun with dying patients. Even though the measures are light compared with the home confinement mandated across Spain during the first wave of the virus, they have sparked a ferocious political battle between Mr Sanchez’s left-wing coalition government and the Madrid administration, run by a right-wing rival. The Madrid government, led by

Isabel Diaz Ayuso of the conservative Popular Party, said it would enforce the orders but it has filed an appeal at the National Court in hopes of annulling them. She is fiercely opposed to a widespread lockdown of the region on the basis it would damage the economy. But with 35 percent of new cases registered in Madrid, despite having just 14 percent of Spain’s population, the central government has said it has been forced to act, passing the obligatory measures in the Official State Gazette (BOE). Health experts have been urging Madrid to take stronger action for weeks, but the city’s health chief Enrique Ruiz Escudero argues the measures are not necessary. The health ministry ordered compliance after Madrid refused to accept a set of health metrics to dictate when cities with

populations of 100,000 of more need to adopt heavier restrictions to curb the virus. The measures were approved by a majority of regional health authorities from Spain’s 19 regions and autonomous cities, with Madrid in the minority against them. The government orders only allow people to cross municipal borders to commute for work, for a medical appointment, legal errands or appointments with a governmental administration. The region had already applied similar measures to certain areas, and limited social gatherings to a maximum of six people, but infections kept rising. The restrictions, in principle, will last two weeks, but once they have been in place for seven days they will be evaluated at a bilateral meeting of the central and Madrid regional governments.

WH resident services We all know that things have been hard for business since the Covid-19 Pandemic unfolded in March this year, but few have been hit as hard as those within the leisure and tourism industries. With an almost immediate ban on flights, closures of hotels and images of cruises stuck in ports round the world, these are by far some of the worst industries to be affected. Whether a business is reliant on tourists coming to Spain and spending their money on local facilities, or, like a travel agency, reliant on borders being opened and customers travelling the globe, each and every one of these business has been crippled by closing frontiers, draconian hospitality measures, cancellations and closures of facilities – most of it out of the control of the companies most affected! Whilst some tourism categories have flourished (think private Villas, and luxury Boutique Hotels), many have struggled to compete with implementing the new safety measures, coupled with extreme flight cancellations and new opening hours and restrictions. Any business that wants to succeed, needs to be flexible in today´s market! Worldwide Horizons is one of these businesses – used to

sending their clients all around the world, it has been a real shock to not be able to even cross regional borders inside of Spain at one point during the lockdown. Whilst the team continue on the Spanish system of furlough (ERTE), owner Yvonne has been looking at ways in which to bring in other elements of business, knowing that tourism will be a long slow road to recovery. Whilst working non-stop to issue clients with flight refunds, vouchers and arrange the many other changes to customers reservations, she recognises that the office needs a new focus for business, in both the short and long term. For this reason, Yvonne has decided to launch WH Resident Services. Via the offices in La Zenia and Benijofar, the team will organise a range of services most frequently needed by ex-pat residents residing in Spain – such as new arrivals that need NIE numbers to complete their house purchase, TIE Cards for those who are eligible, to arranging a Spanish Will, and Notary services such as preparing the paperwork for buying and selling property. They will also arrange Habitation certificates for those selling homes, Tourist Licences for those who want to rent, and, a little

more in keeping with the original travel business, Weddings and Honeymoons both here on the Costa and also abroad. Yvonne has a history in this line of work, having previously set up and expanded a well known Gestoria in La Zenia, running it for years prior to taking over the travel agency, since travel was always her first love. Even whilst running the travel agency, she and the team have years of helping clients to get their documents in order, helping parents organise their children into school, sorting out TIE appointments and of course, registering clients on the Imserso (Subsidised Holiday) Scheme. So taking this a step further and offering their services professionally is simply formalising what they have already been doing. The other great thing is that over the years, the team have built up a great list of reliable service providers – Air Con supplies, Builders and Architects, Scuba Diving Schools, official translators, etc – they know where to source the best priced service no matter what you need! So whatever are looking for here in Spain, new arrival or long term resident, contact Yvonne and the team at travel@whtravel.es for the best priced advice and assistance.

Simple, symbolic act marks Polics day The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, accompanied by the Councillor for Security and Emergencies, Federico Alarcón, and the Commissioner of the Local Police, Vicente Gutiérrez, presided over the simple act that was held on the Day of the Holy Guardian Angels, in honour of the police service. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the act simply consisted of placing a laurel wreath at the feet of the statue of the Holy Guardian Angel at Local Police Station, in memory and tribute to all the

police officers no longer with us. The mayor also sent a letter to the commissioner of the Policia Local acknowledging the excellent work that officers have been doing during the pandemic, and thanking all of the officers for their invaluable service and exemplary work ethic during this complicated time.

Pantomime Group “teed off!” To ensure the members of Rojales Pantomime Group keep in touch during these very hard times when no rehearsals for the next panto are possible, another great social event was enjoyed in September. A round of mini golf was the arranged at Greenlands Golf Club. Dee, the group’s Social Secretary allocated members teams and arranged various prizes for the end of the game. Members duly teed off with sterilized golf putters through 18 lots of different obstacles, including a crocodile (where players had to knock the ball into its mouth! If you were lucky, it came out of its tail!) Lots of ohs and ahs and laughter were heard around the course and the game was followed by a welcome drink, or two, and a very enjoyable lunch. Prize giving was surprising as one lady member seemed to have achieved something that perhaps no one has ever done before - she won a prize for a Hole in One!...a prize for being last in the individual scores…and a prize for being

in the winning team! The Group cannot wait to get back to being able to rehearse together and sincerely hope that they can come through this crisis and be able to, hopefully, in the not too distant future, entertain lots of lovely audiences with pantomimes and also raise money for local charities. In the meantime lots of social events Library image will just have to be enjoyed…Oh yes they will! Other telltale signs include the word 'philosopher' having the wrong spelling on the back cover and the author's name appearing as Joanne Rowling on the inside page. Plastic straws and cotton buds now banned in UK Single-use plastic straws, plastic based cotton buds and plastic stirrers are now banned from sale and distribution in the UK. The government's Department for Food, the Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed this new rule back in May 2019, and originally the deadline for banning the items was April 2020. Delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic meant that the ban finally came into place on October 1st. Businesses are asked to switch to paperbased alternatives, or just remove the items altogether. Hospitals, bars, restaurants and cafes will still make plastic straws available for those who need to use a straw because of medical needs, but they will need to ask for a straw – it will not be automatically provided. Defra has estimated that in the UK alone, five billion straws and 300 million stirrers are thrown in the bin every year. In addition, the UK population currently uses and discards around 2 billion cotton buds every year.

Ask the Mayor Do you live in Torrevieja? Do you have a question about the town? Perhaps you have a great idea, or are concerned about something, or you need to find out how you go about a certain administrative process? The Costa Blanca People has established a new link with the town hall in order to ensure that all citizens’ questions are passed directly to the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón. We have had a huge response and the Mayor’s office is working through all the questions received to date by email and Facebook. Below are the first answers to reader questions with more to follow in next week’s edition. Kjell Isaksson asks the Mayor: “Why are they don’t clean Parks!? When do they clean streets in Aguas Nuevas!? Havent been cleaned at all! Why aren’t the Policia Local in Aguas Nuevas!?” The Mayor replies: Hello Kjell. As you know, we are waiting to finalise the Urban Cleaning contract that will allow us to increase the service, in all areas of Torrevieja, both in terms of quality and quantity, this new contract is about to be resolved very soon. At the moment we continue to maintain the service with the previous company and try to cover all possible areas. In any case, if there are areas that you consider are not clean, you

can inform us directly by email sending photos and the address to torreviejaoari@gmail.com and they will communicate it to the corresponding Council. As for the Police, the presence in Aguas Nuevas is the same as in the rest of the urbanizations of Torrevieja - less than we would like, as is the situation in the rest of the municipal area. We want to increase this, and we are increasing this. In the most recent budget (signed off just last week) we have approved more police officers for Torrevieja. The police numbers in Torrevieja have not been increased for many years so for us this is a priority. In order to address the situation, we have approval for 30 new officers – 10 will start this year, 10 next year, and 10 the following year.´ Roy Phillips asks the Mayor: “What has happened, or NOT happened at La Siesta open land park. Money spent two - three years ago to upgrade the area but now left to deteriorate although promises made by Eduardo Dolón on several occasions to upgrade the area again. When Mr Dolón?” The Mayor replies: Hello Roy, The Siesta Park is planned as I promised in our electoral campaign, we have incorporated a 2.5 million Euros item in the budget that we have voted for.

Finally, last week, the Councilor for Parks and Gardens is already working to set a start date for the works. We will inform all the neighbors through a meeting in La Siesta soon. Un saludo Becky Latham asks the Mayor: “When are you opening the kids parks!?” The Mayor replies: Hello Becky. All the playgrounds are open from June 5, and they are disinfected every alternate day (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Regards Roger Jinks asks the Mayor: “Get rid of illegal vendors, Eduardo Dolón particularly on the paseo maritimo. Police do not appear to deter this activity.” The Mayor replies: Hello Roger. Illegal sellers are a scourge throughout the country; the necessary tools to end this problem would be the development of stricter and more specific regulations. Regarding the actions that we can carry out from the city council here in Torrevieja, constant police presence is the most effective. Unfortunately, as I mentioned in my above answer to Kjell’s question, we do not have enough police

officers to maintain a constant presence. At the moment, those who are on duty are allocated to call outs in order of priority and unfortunately something often comes up with higher priority than patrolling the paseo. This year we have approval for ten new officers, as well as ten next year and ten the following year. With these 30 new officers we hope to provide a better more secure police service to all of Torrevieja. Regards Sarah Steel asks the Mayor: “What is the process for paying non resident tax this year due to covid-19 as we will not be able to come over to Spain to obtain our suma and complete the paperwork

based on this bill and pay the Necessary non Resident tax bill. Is there an extension?” The Mayor replies: “Hello Sarah. The jurisdiction of the non-resident tax is not the City Council but the Central Government, in Torrevieja what we have done is to delay the payment of the IBI (Property and Property Tax) until November 6 when the payment usually ends at the beginning of October. The non-resident tax is based on the previous year, that is to say that this year you will have to present the documentation for 2019 where you will already have the IBI paid last year. Thank you for your question. Regards.” Send your questions or comments to the editor, aoife@costablancapeople.com

Local supermarkets looking to hire Superstores across Spain are seeking nearly 800 new staff members for an immediate start with entry-level salaries of €1,300 a month. Supermarkets Mercadona and Lidl need 177 and 45 each, and DIY hypermarket Leroy Merlín is seeking 551 new employees. Mercadona is offering both permanent and temporary contracts – although 90 percent of its staff, at any one time, is on a permanent contract, so those taken on temporarily may become fixed members of the payroll in the foreseeable future. It is also offering weekend jobs, which would suit students or those who already have another job during the week but need to top up their income. The vast majority are based instore, where the starting salary is €1,300 a month before tax (typically about €1,105 net), but Mercadona increases its staff's wages annually until, by the third or fourth year, they are earning in region of €1,400 a month after tax. Lidl's offers mostly do not need the candidate to have any postschool qualifications, although its job website allows would-be applicants to filter those available by education level. The majority are for shelf-stacking and other shop-floor duties. Its salaries, along with Mercadona's, are some of the best on the market – the German chain's minimum for any position is €15,580.60 a year, which works out at about €1,104 a

month after tax, with increases annually similar to those of Mercadona. Leroy Merlín is offering 551 jobs, some full-time and some parttime, mostly starting off on temporary contracts but with the likelihood of becoming permanent over time. They include restocking, till staff, customer service staff, among others, and the chain also has a graduate training scheme open to applicants nationwide. The lowest salaries start at about

€1,200 a month before tax, or approximately €1,048 a month net, with annual increases as employees gain experience with the firm. Jobs can be found on Empleo.leroymerlin.es, Empleo.lidl.es, and Mercadona.avanture.net/es_ES/C areers/SearchJobs. Otherwise, a simple google search with the name of the firm and 'empleo' ('employment') should take applicants to the right page.

Free flu Vaccine for those over 64 Yesterday the Ministry of Health started its annual flu vaccination campaign with the aim of increasing the number of elderly people vaccinated to avoid the traffic jam that occurs every January in hospitals, in a year especially complicated by the coronavirus pandemic. The health department has set a target to try to vaccinate three out of every four people over the age of 64 year - the population group that suffers the most health problems associated with flu and covid-19. It also aims to reach 60 percent of other vulnerable groups such as pregnant women. Those responsible for the campaign recognise that it will not be easy because the annual call for those eligible to get vaccinated has failed to reach its target for several years. The last available set of figures show that only 52.07 percent of those over 64 were vaccinated against the flu, so the Valencian Community has to improve its records by 23 percentage points if it wants achieve the goal of immunising 75 percent of those over 64 years of age.

"It will be difficult because we start from the lower-middle part of the table in comparison with other communities," acknowledges JosĂŠ Antonio Lluch, head of the Health Promotion service of the General Directorate of Public Health of the department. Almost 1.3 million flu vaccines have been purchased, 465,000 more than last year and the Ministry has been identifying the 989,000 people who, according to

the National Institute of Statistics, are over 64 years old and looking at who among them has conditions that can be complicated by a flu infection. Once identified these people will be contacted by phone from their local health centre and advised to get vaccinated. "We have already started talking to those over 64 with

health problems, then we will move on to the rest of the elderly and then those with chronic health conditions even though they are younger," explains Lluch. The first appointments have already been made and vaccines started today. Those who have not made an appointment will be reminded via SMS. In a previous campaign targeting the elderly, in those who received an SMS, vaccination coverage improved by 1 percent. Doctors hope that this year the campaign will work better, taking into account that there is still no vaccine available for the coronavirus and awareness of the problems that can result from a bad flu is greater. The campaign also seeks to reach 75 percent of health personnel and 60 percent of pregnant women, among other groups. The campaign aims to protect people against the flu and avoid that overload that occurs in hospitals with the increase in flu and respiratory diseases ever winter. Ministers and doctors are also concerned that a combination of flu and coronavirus patients might overwhelm the health system.

Donald Trump has coronavirus Donald Trump and his wife Melania have tested positive for coronavirus. The President of the United States was diagnosed with Covid-19 early on Friday morning, and had been suffering "mild symptoms", including cold-like symptoms, fatigue and a mild fever, according to officials. The US president confirmed on Twitter that he and the first lady have contracted COVID-19, saying: "We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!" The president is 74 years old and his health records earlier this year showed he is categorised as obese, putting him at higher risk of serious complications from the virus. Mr Trump was expected to selfisolate for two weeks while facing treatment for the disease, with his diagnosis coming just one month before the US election on 3rd November. However, according to reports, the US president's condition seemed to worsen and he was transferred to a military hospital. CNN reported an official saying there is "reason for concern" about his health and that the situation was "serious". But the aide also reassured the public that they should not be alarmed and has said Trump is taking the situation "very seriously". While White House doctor Sean P. Conley said that the president "was doing very well", did not need supplemental oxygen, and

had received a first dose of Remdesivir, an intravenous antiviral drug sold by Gilead Sciences Inc that has been shown to shorten hospital stays. Just hours earlier, the White House sought to project an air of business as usual despite Trump's diagnosis, but aides privately expressed concern about the presidential election and showed signs of rising worry about coronavirus. Trump flew by helicopter to Walter Reed Medical Centre for treatment on Friday evening but staff members said he would continue working from a special suite there and that he had remained engaged in governing throughout the day. Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said: "Out of an

abundance of caution, and at the recommendation of his physician and medical experts, the President will be working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed for the next few days.” President's physician, Navy Commander Sean P Conley, added: "Following PCRconfirmation of the President's diagnosis, as a precautionary measure he received a single 8 gram dose of Regeneron's polyclonal antibody cocktail. He completed the infusion without incident. "In addition to the polyclonal antibodies, the President has been taking zinc, vitamin D, famotidine and a daily aspirin." Trump has not transferred power to Vice President Mike Pence.

RBL Band tunes up At the time of lockdown the Royal British Legion Concert Band was rehearsing for the Bill Singleton Memorial Concert. This was to be a concert with singers, choirs, dancers and of course the Royal British Legion Concert Band of which Bill was a founder member. However, literally everything changed overnight mid-March and like many events, the concert was cancelled. As one of the leading concert bands in the area, at the time of lockdown there were numerous bookings in the diary including the V.E. Day Celebrations, St. Georges Day at Villa Martin Plaza and La Zenia Boulevard. Now rehearsals have started again with strict covid protection

measures in place, including social distancing of the band members. Looking to the future in these uncertain times, the Band hopes to be performing for the Poppy Appeal Launch on Saturday 17th October at Zenia Boulevard, the Remembrance Day service at Mil Palmeras Church on Sunday 8th November and on Monday 9th

November in Torrevieja. Of course, all events need to be confirmed and may change with little notice. The Royal British Legion Concert Band is currently looking for more musicians in the string (violin and cello), woodwind and brass (principal trumpet) sections. If you would like to join please email Graham Robinson at: robinsongraham256@googlemail. com or phone him on 00447724064251, alternatively come along to one of the bands rehearsals. It rehearses in the basement of the Sophia Wellness Centre, Cabo Roig every Thursday afternoon between 4pm and 6pm, you will be made very welcome.

British expats flock to residencia presentation Last Monday, the Councillor for International Residents, Mariola Rocamora, and the Councillor for Statistics, José Galiano, hosted an informative talk on the process and benefits of having Spanish Residencia. The talk took place at the salon at Playa Flamenca Town Hall and the socially distanced capacity was soon met by eager British expats, who have been told in no uncertain terms that having this document is key to life in Spain post-Brexit transition. The session was run in conjunction with the Babelia Association, a non-profit

organisation whose objective is the promotion and strengthening of intercultural coexistence and equal opportunities within Spanish society. Babelia is the official association, appointed by the British Embassy, to help expats prepare for the 31st December when the Brexit transition period ends. The talk was so well attended that there were more people than places and organisers had to very quickly devise a solution. “We had to do two information sessions to accommodate the more than 60 British residents,

interested in being able to claim their residence permit," explained Councillor Rocamora. Councillor Galiano added that: "Due to the restrictions put in place to minimise the spread of COVID-19, the capacity for this presentation was limited to guarantee social distancing, while the use of masks was mandatory at all times". To facilitate the considerable number of enquires a dedicated email has been opened to give an appointment to those expats who want to obtain residency. Appointments can be requested at: residents@orihuela.es

Is your UK bank’s passport about to expire? As a no-deal Brexit is looking more and more likely, there are many changes looming in the financial world. Currently UK financial institutions, like your high street bank, are able to operate throughout the European Union under a passport scheme. This enables citizens within the EU to hold bank accounts in countries other than where they currently have resident status. If no agreement can be reached between the EU and the UK, then financial institutions will no longer be able to offer their services to Spanish residents.

Lloyds and Barclays banks have started writing to their customers here in Spain telling them that they will have their bank accounts closed by December 31st. It seems almost certain that all other banks will follow suit. It’s not just high street banks that will no longer be able to deal with Spanish residents. If you still have your UK financial adviser, they will also no longer be able to advise you as their licence will no longer cover EU countries. Many people will not want to bring their savings from their UK bank to their Spanish bank. Worries about currency exchange and possible language difficulties are just two reasons for

people to feel unhappy about this prospect. If you have savings in UK banks or indeed a UK financial adviser and are looking for solutions, then help is at hand, but why should you choose Seagate to advise you? All our advisers were trained at Lloyds Bank in the UK. We pride ourselves on putting our clients first. We have a fully staffed office in Benijofar. More than 1.5m jobless or ERTE in Spain Six months after Spain first introduced restrictive measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, including a 99-day lockdown from mid-March to mid-June, more than 1.5 million people are either still out of work or still furloughed due to the crisis, according to a report by the association of temporary employment agencies Asempleo. The figure was reached by taking the 753,000 individuals who were no longer making social security contributions on the last day of August compared with the figure on 11th March (when the lockdown was announced), and adding to it the 810,000 workers who were still on furlough at that time. In total, 1,560,000 people were out of work this September, a figure which in percentage terms equals 8.1 percent of those who were employed in pre-crisis days. The report also flags up that only three quarters of those affected have registered as unemployed, while the rest have dropped out of the labour force. The majority of workers bearing the brunt of the economic fallout from the pandemic are in the hospitality, transportation and retail sectors. Lockdown measures, border closures and the subsequent loss of tourists have been disastrous for people working in these areas, particularly those in the hotel

industry, with 78 percent of them losing their jobs or being furloughed between 11th March and 30th April, when the economy was in hibernation. This figure is 65 percent for employees in the food and drink sector, 65% in the recreational sector, and 64 percent in the aviation industry. Tourism experienced a degree of respite as restrictions on mobility were eased beginning in May, leading to the creation of 330,000 jobs. Similarly, when the economy reopened following the hibernation, 2.5 million workers on furlough returned to work between 30th April and 31st August. However, the rate of reengagement has slowed in September coinciding with the end of the summer season. Despite a degree of economic revival in August, the hotel industry and the transportation and retail sectors are still far from reaching their pre-crisis employment figures. In the

aviation industry, for example, 44 percent of employees are out of work compared to February, right before Spain began taking measures against the Covid-19 pandemic. This figure rises to 49 percent for travel agency staff. Meanwhile, in the hotel industry, the numbers of people in employment in August were far lower than in 2019, when 289,000 new jobs were created between February and August compared to just 3,000 during the same period in 2020. The figures are no better in the retail sector, which has lost 56.000 jobs between February and August of this year, in stark contrast to 2019 when 115,000 jobs were created during the same period. Valencia has lost 25.1 percent of its GVA and Castellón, which shed 26.8 percent, compared to the country’s average GVA loss of 21 percent. Employment contracted below the national average of 7% in Valencia at -8.6%.

Rural holidays beat beach breaks for first time Rural tourism is the only real form of leisure travel that has not taken a dramatic hit from the pandemic – quite the opposite, in fact, if figures quoted by countryside hotels are anything to go by. Keen to avoid crowds, more and more residents in Spain have stayed away from airports and beaches this year, meaning international travel plummeted drastically and, on the staycation front, the coast was less of a holiday magnet in July and August. So, a casa rural, or a guesthouse in the country, was a popular way of sociallydistancing, and in the middle of a year that has involved being confined at home, families and friends kept apart, fear of job loss and of loved ones getting seriously ill, or worse, the psychological need to 'get away from it all' has, collectively, been greater. Again, psychologically, the burning urge to escape one's real life for a few days and de-stress tends to conjure up images of nature, greenery, fresh air,

picturesque views, a slower pace of life, home cooking, animals, and a much lesser emphasis on technology, feeling busy, living the high life, and 'being modern'. Given that rural villages or being

right out in the sticks can give the sensation of stepping off the express train of 21st-century existence and popping back to a time when life seemed so much less complicated (even if it wasn't), destinations deep in the country have proven to be the ideal 'Covid break' in 2020. According to at least one booking site, over the two main summer tourism months, rural holidays accounted for 54 percent of the total – a whole 14

percentage points higher than over the same period in 2019. Coincidentally, almost as if they suspected ahead of time, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) chose the theme of 'Tourism and Rural Development' for the 2020 edition of World Tourism Day. Based upon the premise that the holiday industry needs to be more climate-friendly, preparations for World Tourism Day adapted fast as the pandemic reshaped the sector – with 90 percent of UNESCO World Heritage Sites shut and safety suddenly becoming key, the countryside proved to be the perfect focus. According to the UN: “Young people in rural communities are three times more likely to be unemployed – tourism is a lifeline, offering [them] a chance to earn a living without having to migrate.” Additionally, one in 10 people worldwide are employed in the holiday industry, meaning fast action has to be taken this and next year to rebuild it without compromising on public safety.

Spain seizes sailing boats smuggling 30 tonnes of hash

Spanish police have announced that they had seized more than 30 tonnes of hashish stashed onboard four sailing boats in its biggest-ever bust of such drugs at sea. The four boats were intercepted in the Atlantic in the framework of a four-day operation which ended last week with the arrest of nine people of Bulgarian and Russian origin, a police statement said. Two of them, both "luxury vessels", were stopped off the coast of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, while a third was seized near the Strait of Gibraltar and the fourth off the coast of Mauritania, south of Morocco. Sailing under British, German and Dutch flags, the vessels belonged to what police said was "the biggest criminal organisation dedicated to trafficking hashish by sea". Since the beginning of the year,

Spanish police have seized nearly 35 tonnes of hashish belonging to this organisation, which is run by Bulgarian nationals, along with six of their sailing boats, valued at some 5.0 million euros. Spanish security forces staged the operation after coordination with police in Britain, the Netherlands, Greece and Italy, and the help of Europol, the European policing agency. Spain is one of the main gateways for drugs coming into Europe and criminal gangs from eastern Europe are well established within the country. Earlier this month, Spanish police seized a Croatia-flagged sailing boat off the Canary Islands carrying nearly a tonne of cocaine destined for eastern Europe with a street value of more than 40 million euros, prompting officials in Spain and Croatia to speak of a "new African route" for drugs.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Brexit and the Bank of England were behind the brimming optimism surrounding sterling this week. Despite an overflow of relatively good news, sterling changed direction half a dozen times, eventually ending up neutral on average unchanged on the week. The Bank of England’s Quarterly Bulletin concluded that the risks are “skewed to the downside”, with Chief Economist Andy Haldane telling the audience that the media are too pessimistic about the outlook. A long proponent of a V-shaped recovery, Haldane still remaining optimistic pushed the pound higher, among other good news for the UK. Earlier in the week Deputy Governor Dave Ramsden echoed that the BoE has a collective lack of enthusiasm for negative interest rates, saying that the Old Lady is “not about to use negative interest rates imminently”, so the bank was a big backer for sterling. Even though the good news was over spilling, sterling dropped a cent but made it back after the news that the EU had begun legal proceedings against the UK for disregarding the Withdrawal Agreement. Fears that such actions would scupper a Brexit deal were soon alleviated though after a story in the press that there is now a 70% chance of a deal. Rightly or wrongly, investors still seem to be assuming that some sort of post-Brexit arrangement will be agreed between Britain and Europe, and that the recent argument about the Internal Market bill is just posturing. House prices are rising at the fastest pace since 2015, almost two thirds of employers are not expecting to make staff redundant in the next three months, and while ecostats showed business investment falling 26.5% in Q2, it was actually less than forecast. Coupled with potential Brexit progress, sterling is comfortable, for now.

EUR While the news that the EU had begun legal proceedings against the UK was a dominant headline, the major player in the euro’s week was actually inflation, or more to the point, the lack of it. Spain reported that consumer prices fell by a provisional 0.6% in the year to September. In Germany the preliminary inflation reading was 0.2% and today’s pan-Eurozone figure is forecast to be -0.2% as well. Persistently low inflation is not unique to the Eurozone and the European Central Bank is not the only one agonising about what to do. On Wednesday, President Christine Lagarde said in a wide-ranging speech that she is considering a shift from targeting 2% on a sixweekly basis to looking instead at average inflation over time. The collective EU stimulus package was agreed more than two months ago and has yet to get off the blocks because EU leaders are divided on how to link the disbursement of funds to the observance of democratic values. Hungary and Poland will set up a joint body to monitor “the rule of law” across the EU even as Germany proposes a “scheme that links access to EU money, including the 750 billion euro recovery fund, to respecting the rule of law”. The ECB, like many other central banks, is uncomfortable with its 2% inflation target. A main argument against it is that public perceptions of inflation do not match reality. The stalled stimulus package didn’t have an immediate impact on the euro though, but it is on average 0.3% lower against USD and GBP. The various EC indices of Eurozone confidence – individual and corporate – had a positive tilt. Consumer confidence was a point higher at -13.9 and industrial confidence improved by more than that to -11.1.

Small Spanish coins could be phased out Brown coins landing in charity piggy-banks on bar and shop counters may be history by some time in 2022, depending upon the outcome of a Eurozone-wide opinion poll. By the end of 2021, the European Commission will decide on whether or not to phase out one- and two-cent coins if it considers they are not used enough to justify continuing to mint them. Firstly, the Commission will need to carry out full research to work out the impact on household and commercial finances, since eliminating the two coins of the smallest denomination of the euro would inevitably mean prices rounded to the nearest five or 10 cents. Already, Finland, Italy, Belgium, Ireland and The Netherlands have approved legislation covering rounding up or down, but the remaining Eurozone countries do not have any specific laws. This is likely to cause widespread debate, as the lowest incomes could be the hardest-hit: The most common non-rounded price seen anywhere ends in 99 cents, an age-old marketing trick designed to make a consumer think goods are cheaper than they are by paying attention to the first

figure only. Prices of, for example, €5.99, are viewed almost by reflex as being €5-and-something, rather than, effectively, €6. Rounding up if oneand two-cent coins are scrapped means an extra cent added onto anything with a price ending in 99 cents; also, other random prices could rise by more. In Spain, for example, the typical cost of a supermarket own-brand litre of milk is 57 or 58 cents, sometimes with the lower of the two applied if buying them in a box of six litres – this could mean an extra two to three cents a day per person added to the shopping bill for milk alone. Therefore, for a four-person household, just the milk bill could increase by €10.95 a year, without totting up all the extra rounded-up prices.

Whilst most middle-income households would not notice the difference, those at the lower end of the income scale would see an impact. Even though paying by credit or debit card means, in theory, prices containing odd cents are not affected, only a very small number of European countries – most of them outside the Eurozone – are almost cash-free, and as yet, no country on earth has axed cash altogether, so the move would affect those without bank accounts or who feel more comfortable with cash, such as the poorer members of society, and the elderly. Although some Eurozone countries have a higher cost of living than others, with wages and pensions that reflect these – meaning the odd cent here or there would not cause undue pain for even very low-income families – the European Commission does not want each and every different country in the common currency area to follow separate criteria. Nothing will be decided without the full agreement of the member States involved, after a complete assessment of the environmental, social and economic impacts of changing the rules, the Commission assures.

Spain extends ERTE until 31st January The Spanish Cabinet has approved an extension to the ERTE furloughing scheme for companies affected by the coronavirus crisis. The deal, which extends the furlough conditions until 31st January, was finalised after 10 hours of last-minute negotiations on Monday between representatives of the Labour and Social Security ministries, unions and employer associations. Under the system, companies suffering losses from the Covid19 pandemic and the confinement measures can temporarily send home workers or reduce their working hours. Thousands of businesses have filed for ERTEs since the Spanish government introduced a lockdown in mid-March. This is the third time that the scheme, which was due to end on 30th September, has been extended. After a marathon meeting, the Labour Ministry and Social Security Ministry reached an agreement with Spain’s two largest unions, the UGT and CCOO, to extend the furlough scheme. There were doubts about how the Spanish Business

Confederation (CEOE) would receive the plan, but the CEOE’s executive committee unanimously approved the deal. Spain’s other main business association, Cepyme, also supported the agreement. The pact maintains unemployment aid at 70 percent and does not reduce a worker’s right to ask for support in the future. The government has also created an extraordinary benefit for people who have lost their job but don’t have access to unemployment aid, like temporary workers. The deal also makes it possible to combine ERTE support with part-time work in some instances. As for businesses, their employee social security contributions will be subsidised anywhere between 70 percent and 100 percent depending on the size of the company and the time of the year: state aid will decrease gradually between October and January. The agreement follows nearly one month of negotiations. Like the previous two agreements to extend the scheme, the approval of the CEOE posed the biggest stumbling block. But unlike in

the previous negotiations, the CEOE had not expressed an opinion on the government’s proposal or the final details. Self-employed support The new ERTE agreement also includes extra support for selfemployed workers who cannot access the aid available for loss of income. Under the current plan, aid is available to freelancers who can prove that their business activity fell at least 75 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020, with respect to the same period in 2019. The new deal, however, will provide aid to self-employed workers who do not meet this criteria because they have a flat rate or have not made social security payments for at least 12 months. In order to be eligible, individuals need to prove that their income for the last quarter of 2020 was less than the minimum inter-professional salary, which is €950. Those who are eligible will receive 50 percent of the minimum contribution to social security, will not have to pay monthly social security fees and will remain listed as contributors.

But he added: “The decision I took...to deliver my presentation via an interpreter was with the sole intention of the message being transmitted as clearly as possible – although, in hindsight, I can see that it was not the most appropriate decision after all.” “As head of department, my maximum priority has always been that of promoting Valencia as a landmark city in Europe in terms of innovation and entrepreneurial policies. “For this reason, we've been working hard for months on presenting a serious and thorough project to the European Commission.” Even though the title of iCapital 2020 finally went to Lovaina, in Belgium, Valencia's reaching the final phase meant it earned an innovation award to the tune of €100,000. And Galiana has announced his determination to 'continue working to attract investments' to the city and 'developing innovating initiatives and policies', which he 'fully believes in'. “These, and only these, are what should be the focus of everyone's attention,” he argues.

Shop Local

CostaBlancaPeople 6th - 12th October 2020

SHOP LOCAL Last month, the Costa Blanca People launched our ‘Shop Local’ initiative, a campaign to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. So far, the campaign has been really well received among local business owners and it is encouraging to see so many businesses becoming advocates for the campaign by sharing the logo, supporting the initiative and voicing their support for fellow business owners in the area. Already, the campaign has had a positive impact with some of those displaying the logo already reporting that they have won new business this week as a direct result which is a wonderful result! We are seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic and believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. With local businesses still reeling from lockdown, this summer has been difficult for us all. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the winter months. Why have we launched this campaign? As the global pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to life on the Costa Blanca, we all need to do everything we possibly can to help our local economy

bounce back stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve launched our Shop Local campaign. We want to engage in partnership with local business leaders to give our towns, commercial centres, retailers, small businesses and charitable organisations a boost. We want to help businesses, shops, restaurants and entrepreneurs the support they need to continue to make the southern Costa Blanca a great place to live, work and socialise. How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal in your social media posts. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open

along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours. Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Making this campaign visible – on your social media (check our our ‘frame’ for your profile picture, search for ‘Shop Local Costa Blanca’ in frame options when you edit your profile picture to add a frame), in your window or place of business will help ensure it works and stays in the forefront of people’s minds. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Why shopping local works Shopping at local businesses puts money right back into the local economy, and by spending money in our local shops, restaurant, café or bar, we can all do our bit to help revive our local economy. Supporting our local businesses

creates jobs in local communities. Helping to grow the number of jobs in our local areas makes for a better place to live and work, which then creates a healthy economy for the community here on the Costa Blanca. Small businesses are often run by people who live in or near our local community. As the southern Costa Blanca continues to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people may have missed. Shop local, Costa Blanca It is our hope that Shopping Locally becomes a daily practice to grow a stronger community for us all. Across the southern Costa Blanca region, we value our local businesses and understand the impact that every one of our hard-earned euros can have on the vitality and survival of the places where we live. We all know that spending our money locally not only supports our friends and neighbours who run the businesses that make our communities unique, but also the critical public services that keep us safe and uphold our quality of life. Advocates We are still looking for advocates for our Shop Local campaign. To get

involved, all you need to do is display the campaign poster in your business and social media. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal and tag us in your posts so we can share your business with our followers – this applies to all local businesses, not just those who currently advertise with us. Together, we can ensure that our local economy not only survives, but thrives.

Maverick film-maker Carl Denham and his cast and crew board a ship bound for a mysterious island - but when they arrive, a giant gorilla carries off their leading lady, Ann Darrow. As the crew makes its way through the teeming jungle to find her, the director concocts a dangerous scheme to capture the great ape and take it back to New York. Peter Jackson's remake of the fantasy adventure, starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black, Adrien Brody and Andy Serkis, in a dual role as the ship's cook and motion-captured creature.

Phil, Stu and Alan reunite in Bangkok for another stag weekend, but having learned the lessons of their previous misadventures, resolve to keep this one quiet and alcohol-free. Things inevitably do not go according to plan, and they must once again piece together the events of a wild night they cannot remember. Comedy sequel, starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis.

Britain's Got Talent becomes 'the most complained about series of 2020' with 27,006 viewers objecting over Alesha Dixon's BLM necklace, THAT Diversity dance and 'tasteless' death jokes Britain's Got Talent has 'become the most complained about series of 2020' after 27,006 people contacted Ofcom. Several moments throughout this year's show have seen viewers log complaints, including 1,900 over judge Alesha Dixon's choice of a necklace with the letters BLM. I've tested positive for Covid': HRVY confirms Strictly's 'worst case scenario' has happened after mixing with his costars and will remain in isolation until October 8' YouTuber HRVY, 21, tested positive for coronavirus despite being asymptomatic He will have to remain at home in isolation until October 8 He'll be allowed out just four days before the celebrities are partnered with pros 'This is the last thing Strictly wanted,' a source said. 'With just ten days until the celebrities are introduced to their partners, this is the worst-case scenario' If he is not well by October 8, he will be axed from the competition

However the biggest number, a whopping 24,500, came in response to Diversity's performance of a Black Lives Matter routine on September 5.

Katie Price has been told that she'll be in her wheelchair for another six months as she continues to recover from her foot surgery. The former glamour model, 42, broke both of her feet and ankles in a freak accident while on holiday in Turkey with her family and beau Carl Woods, 31, in July. However the update comes as good news for the star as she had thought it would be closer to a year before she could walk again - with Katie crediting her boyfriend with her speedy recovery. The new six-month timeframe means Katie will still be relying on her wheelchair well into the start of 2021 but she is determined to stay positive. 'As dangerous as the Abdication': Prince Harry and William's breach is WORSE than anyone thinks (and started EARLIER), claims biographer behind new book laying bare devastating inside story - as he says Meghan was handled 'appallingly' On historian and royal biographer Robert Lacey’s desk is a large envelope, still sealed. It contains draft chapters from his latest book, which - as is his custom he sent to Buckingham Palace pre-

publication. It’s quite unusual for a royal writer to do this, but Lacey has always worked this way. In 1977, when he was more famous for being an investigative journalist, he wrote what is still regarded as the definitive biography of the Queen. Palace officials co-operated, and he was invited to have tea with senior courtiers. He has never allowed his subjects to veto his work, but he says allowing them to see ‘parts, not all of a book’ in advance is courteous and allows those involved to challenge key points, if necessary. ‘It allows debate,’ he says. ‘If they don’t agree with something, we can argue it out.’ So he packed up the key chapters from his latest book and sent them off, fully aware that the Palace may not like some aspects of his forensic account of what is happening in the House of Windsor. He was a little surprised, though, when the package was returned to him, unopened, with a terse covering letter. In short, the Palace did not want to know. Lisa Armstrong calls the police after love letters from ex-husband Ant McPartlin were stolen from a skip outside their former marital home

Lisa Armstrong has reportedly contacted the police after items from her and ex-husband Ant McPartlin's marriage were stolen from outside her former marital home. The make-up artist, 43, is said to have discovered a Valentine's Card from Ant was taken from a skip that was placed outside. According to a report from The Mirror on Thursday, Lisa contacted officers after she realised the notes were taken, as well as a document of the seating arrangements at their wedding in 2006, and one of Ant's personalised dressing gowns.

Special sticker proposed for drivers over 70

Authorities in Salamanca have proposed a distinctive M sticker for drivers over the age of 70. The Salamanca Prosecutor’s Office, through the attorney general Juan José Pereña have proposed the scheme to “avoid accidents" and "protect the elderly" and so that other drivers "have patience" on the road with older drivers. The proposal would see drivers over 70 having to display a mandatory, M sticker, similar to the L sticker used by learner drivers. The scheme was outlined this week by Pereña, in an interview with the Onda Cero tv programme 'Más de Uno Salamanca', in which he said that the main objective of the proposal is to "protect the elderly" who he claims drive

habitually "slower than other drivers". Pereña was keen to clarify that his proposal does not seek to stigmatize drivers over 70 years of age, suggesting a number of options such as "making it voluntary instead of mandatory" or "increasing the age" for drivers displaying the M sticker. Pereña said that he raised the proposal with the State Attorney General's Office due to his own "experience as a driver" but also that his ideas are supported by "statistics such as those of the General Traffic Directorate", which points out that "the second group with the most deaths from traffic accidents in 2019 is that of people over 65 years of age." Pereña said, "as the years go by, people lose reflexes and another

series of capacities." Something that "does not prevent driving" but that does make it necessary "to adapt the driving mode to the age that one has", so he hopes that the proposal invites “calm debate” on the matter. In addition to the proposal of the 'M' sticker for drivers over 70, Pereña also proposes another initiative in which he suggests that older drivers should have to renew their driving licences after a shorter time than the current five year schedule, citing "Several serious cases of elderly people who have gotten on the opposite side of the highway or who did not know where they were.” "If we let five years pass these things can happen and it would be better to avoid them," concluded Pereña.

Chunky Bolognese soup with penne Ingredients 2 tsp rapeseed oil 3 onions, finely chopped 3 large carrots, finely diced 2 celery sticks, finely diced 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 50g pack 5% fat steak mince 500g carton passata 1 tbsp vegetable bouillon powder 1 tsp smoked paprika 4 sprigs fresh thyme 100g wholemeal penne 45g finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve Method STEP 1 Heat the oil in a large non-stick pan and fry the onions for a few mins. Add the carrots, celery and garlic, then fry for 5

mins, stirring until the vegetables start to soften. STEP 2 Add the meat and stir well so it breaks down as it cooks. Once it’s turned brown, add the passata and bouillon along with 1.3 litres of boiling water. Add the paprika, thyme and some black pepper. Cover the pan and simmer for 15 mins. STEP 3 Tip in the penne and cook for 12-15 mins until tender. Stir through the cheese, then ladle into bowls. Sprinkle over extra cheese, if you like. STEP 4 Cool the remaining soup, remove the thyme and chill. Will keep for up to seven days. Reheat in a pan, adding some water if it’s thickened.

Spiced carrot & lentil soup Ingredients 2 tsp cumin seeds Pinch chilli flakes 2 tbsp olive oil 600g carrots, washed and coarsely grated (no need to peel) 140g split red lentils 1l hot vegetable stock (from a cube is fine) 125ml milk (to make it dairy-free, see 'try' below) Plain yogurt and naan bread, to serve

STEP 3 Simmer for 15 mins until the lentils have swollen and softened. STEP 4 Whizz the soup with a stick blender or in a food processor until smooth (or leave it chunky if you prefer). STEP 5 Season to taste and finish with a dollop of plain yogurt and a sprinkling of the reserved toasted spices. Serve with warmed naan breads.

Method STEP 1 Heat a large saucepan and dry-fry 2 tsp cumin seeds and a pinch of chilli flakes for 1 min, or until they start to jump around the pan and release their aromas. STEP 2 Scoop out about half with a spoon and set aside. Add 2 tbsp olive oil, 600g coarsely grated carrots, 140g split red lentils, 1l hot vegetable stock and 125ml milk to the pan and bring to the boil.

Ingredients 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 large onions , halved and thinly sliced 20g dried porcini mushrooms 3 tsp vegetable bouillon powder 300g chestnut mushrooms , chopped 3 garlic cloves , finely grated 300g potato , finely diced 2 tsp fresh thyme 4 carrots , finely diced 2 tbsp chopped parsley 8 tbsp bio yogurt 55g walnut pieces Method STEP 1 Heat the oil in a large pan. Tip in the

Oxtail soup Ingredients 1 ½kg oxtail , cut into about 4 pieces Small handful thyme sprigs 2 bay leaves Small bunch fresh parsley , leaves and stalks separated ½ tsp black peppercorns , roughly crushed Small piece star anise ½ bottle red wine 4 tbsp sunflower oil 1 onion , roughly chopped 2 carrots , roughly chopped 2 sticks celery , roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves , bashed once and peeled 1 tbsp plain flour

Mushroom & potato soup

1 tbsp ketchup 2l beef stock Method STEP 1 Up to two days ahead, tip the oxtail into a bowl and season with a little salt. Tie the thyme sprigs, bay leaves and parsley stalks together and put in the bowl with the peppercorns and star anise. Pour over the wine, then cover and chill for up to 48 hrs. STEP 2 Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 4. Lift the oxtail out of the marinade, reserving the

mixture. Heat a drizzle of the oil in a large casserole pan and, in batches if needed, brown the oxtail. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Add another drizzle of oil and cook the carrots, onion, celery and garlic until just starting to brown. Stir in the flour and ketchup and cook until you have a thick paste. Pour over the reserved marinade and simmer for 1 min. Nestle the oxtail back in the pan and pour over as much stock as you can, chilling any extra to use later. Bring everything to a gentle boil, scoop off any froth then cover and place in the oven for 3 hrs 30 mins, stirring once or twice until the meat is very tender.

onions and fry for 10 mins until golden. Meanwhile, pour 1.2 litres boiling water over the dried mushrooms and stir in the bouillon. STEP 2 Add the fresh mushrooms and garlic to the pan with the potatoes, thyme and carrots, and continue to fry until the mushrooms soften and start to brown. STEP 3 Pour in the dried mushrooms and stock, cover the pan and leave to simmer for 20 mins. Stir in the parsley and plenty of pepper. Ladle into bowls and serve each portion topped with 2 tbsp yogurt and a quarter of the walnuts. The rest can be chilled and reheated the next day. STEP 3 Remove the soup from the oven and leave to cool slightly, then lift the oxtail from the broth and shred the meat using two forks. Discard the bones and transfer the meat to a bowl. Sieve the liquid into another bowl, then cover and chill overnight. STEP 4 Remove and discard any fat that has solidified on top of the soup. Tip the broth into a saucepan and simmer until silky, adding more stock if the broth is too thick. Stir through the shredded meat until warmed through. Season to taste, then ladle into bowls and scatter over some parsley leaves, if you like.

Veganism is ‘single biggest way’ to reduce environmental impact Eating a vegan diet could be the “single biggest way” to reduce your environmental impact on earth, a new study suggests. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce an individual's carbon footprint from food by up to 73 percent. If everyone stopped eating these foods, they found that global farmland use could be reduced by 75 percent, an area equivalent to the size of the US, China, Australia and the EU combined. Not only would this result in a significant drop in greenhouse gas emissions, it would also free up wild land lost to agriculture, one of the primary causes for mass wildlife extinction. The new study, published in the journal Science, is one of the most comprehensive analyses to date, looking into the detrimental effects farming can have on the environment and included data on nearly 40,000 farms in 119 countries. The findings reveal that meat and dairy production is responsible for 60 per cent of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions, while the products themselves providing just 18 percent of calories and 37 percent of protein levels around the world. Lead author Joseph Poore said: “A vegan diet is probably the

single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use." “It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he explained, which would only reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Avoiding consumption of animal products delivers far better environmental benefits than trying to purchase sustainable meat and dairy,” he added. The research also looked into the different techniques used to produce the same foods and found vast distinctions in terms of environmental impacts. For example, beef cattle reared on natural pastures used 50 times less land than those raised on deforested land. The latter can leads to up to 12 times more greenhouse gas emissions by comparison. This starkly contrasts with emissions of greenhouse gases released as a result of plant-based protein production for items such as tofu and peas. Poore also explained that even production methods which are

thought of as sustainable, such as freshwater fish farming and grassfed beef, can pose environmental problems. Poore’s research is the result of a five-year-long project, which initially began as an investigation into sustainable meat and dairy production. He stopped eating animal products altogether himself after the first year. The next step, Poore said, is to find ways to test his proposed approach in practice. "The problem is, you can’t just put environmental labels on a handful of foods and look to see if there is some effect on purchasing," he said. "Consumers take time to become aware of things, and then even more to act on them. Furthermore, the labels probably need to be in combination with taxes and subsidies. My view is that communicating information to consumers could tip the entire food system towards

AA Real Members’ Stories Throughout 2020, each month, the Costa Blanca People features a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcoholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. An AA Member’s Story... AA saved my life After 10 years working in the entertainment business I ran away from the UK and found myself living in Torrevieja. Within 5 years of my move to Spain I found myself in AA. I had always had an alcohol problem

but I blamed life, my upbringing , other people, work, stress and anyone and anything rather than admit I drank too much. It was always one excuse after another. I thought a change of life style and a move to Spain would solve my problem. AND IT DID FOR THE WORST . Over my first 5 years in Spain my life went down and down , I found with little structure in my life I drank more and more. Work got less and less and drink became a daily routine as much as waking up and sleeping. Drink became my only pastime and work became an obstacle that had to go. Along with the family the partner the car and many other things. I turned my back on most things in life and walked away from everyone. By winter 2000 I found myself reaching out for help to AA and I went to a meeting in Torrevieja. There was one meeting a week then in the main church in town and i hated the fact that my life had come to this. I was 34 years old and a complete and utter mess. I managed to stop drinking and with help and support of AA members I managed to stay sober for 18 months. That was all nothing else changed in my life I just went to meetings and carried on my life as normal just not drinking. I was living on a knife edge. There came a time and a place where if nothing changes then nothing changes. I was told that if I did not look at my life and sort out the wreckage of the past I

would pick up a drink (and I did). One day I had just 1 drink and I was back where I started within 2 weeks I was drinking night and day again. I was, am and always will be an alcoholic. The next 7 years of my life were a complete and utter mess. I lost almost everything. Driving license, friends, family, work and I was hanging onto my home and struggling to stay afloat. I moved ran away came back again got into crazy relationships, Messed up everything and closed everything and everyone out of my life . I lied, cheated, stole and carried on drinking . I just stoped caring about myself and everyone around me. After 7 years of madness living only for the next drink I crawled back into AA a beaten man. By this time the addiction had took over and I struggled for 3 months in and out of meetings there was 10 meeting a week in the Costa Blanca south around the Torrevieja area by this time, I started to go to meetings every day. I so, so wanted and needed to stop drinking. I listened to people that wanted to help me. I did what was suggested and in Feb 2009 I took my last drink and have remained sober ever since. In AA we have a 12 step programme of recovery that has been used by many other addiction recovery groups

worldwide and following this 12 step program, getting a sponsor (someone in the fellowship to guide and support me) I've stayed sober. My life today is so, so different to how it was. I have my life back and it’s not controlled by alcohol. I have my family back I have dear friend that I love and adore. I have my pride self respect and trust back. I trust myself and people trust me. Life has thrown its problems at me over the sober years but I've dealt with life on life's terms without reaching for a drink. I've had deaths of friends and family, financial issues health problems and I had to walk away from my work to stay sober as sobriety means everything to me. Without sobriety I have nothing. I still have a home in Torrevieja and spend a lot of time there but I have all my family back now so enjoy splitting my time between Spain and the UK. I try to give back now to AA and help others like I was helped. I still go to meetings 11 year on and I will always go. I need to be around people that understand my addiction. I will always be an alcoholic I just don't drink today. The Fellowship of AA saved my life. When I look back I ran away from the UK and ended up in Spain lost alone and drunk, the best thing I ever did was walk into an AA room. I never managed to stay sober first time around as I always wanted another drink but I got there in the end after a long and painful down hill road I gave in and accepted I am an alcoholic and for me to drink is not an

option. I would say to anyone who feels that drink is taking over there life please get the help and support you need. Phone the helpline like I did so many years ago. There is an English speaking person waiting to support you on the other end of the phone. You have nothing to loose. I made that call in 2000 and then again in Oct 2008. Help and support is out there and I am today so grateful I made those calls. You may feel alone lost and at the point of no return. I know those feelings I lived them all. There is an answer to this addiction. Your life can be lived again and you can have a wonderful future. I do and so many others on the Costa Blanca do. There is an answer to your problem. Call and start living today. Thank you for reading my story remember you're not alone. A happy and proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous on the Costa Blanca Do you have a problem with Alcohol? Eating habit changes In normal times, food trends often started in restaurants, with top chefs. Maybe they got written up in food magazines or blogs. After some time, you could find the trending ingredients on grocery store shelves. These days, the pandemic is determining how and what we eat, from quick shortcuts to slow cookers. There's lots more home cooking, and many more family meals. Even when people do eat restaurant food, they’re often looking for familiar dishes, experts say. In general, “the trend is looking backwards rather than forwards," says Esmee Williams, who looks at where home cooking is heading for Allrecipes.com. Recipes from the 1960s and ’70s like chicken Kiev, chicken a la king, cheese fondue and salmon patties have become more popular, she says. It’s part of a nostalgia wave sweeping many industries, including decor, fashion and beauty. Back to basics A year ago many foodies were aspirational in their diets. Less so now, as consumers aren't looking to explore the new and fancy. Most "are just trying to get by.” Under all sorts of pressure, people are juggling a desire for comfort food with the need to find a healthy diet and avoid “stress eating. “If you are a food and beverage manufacturer, you need to be thinking about convenience and comfort right now,” industry experts say.

That leads to some contradictory trends. Home cooks are doing more with vegetables, particularly seasonal produce, while also hunkering down with indulgent sweets and treats. According to official figures there were higher sales of both vegetables and ice cream in May 2020, compared to the previous May across Europe and the US. Taking it easy The experts also see a trend towards shortcut products, like refrigerated dough, frozen pizza crusts and pancake mixes. We’ve all been baking more on lockdown but according to the trands, we don’t want to make everything from scratch! Here in this area of Spain we are lucky to have an abundance of fruit and veg and people are used to cooking with what’s available locally. Stretching those cooking skills Another trend cited by Williams is that there are more recipe searches than before for authentic ethnic foods, such as Asian, Mexican and Soul Food. “People are travelling with their taste buds, recreating dishes they ate out but now have to cook instead,″ she says. “Also, these dishes connect us with relatives we can’t be with right now.” And don't forget today's fascination with what Williams calls “self-reliance” cooking - things like homemade bread, homemade pasta, homemade yogurt and an interest in preserving. These more labour-intensive foods provide a way to

keep busy, learn something new, save money and eat well, she says. Family meals The family meal is back – and it’s happening across all three meals. Home is the epicentre of all activity, and meals are a big part of that. Searches for familyfriendly recipes on Allrecipes are up 34 percent from last year. Searches for breakfast recipes are up 35 percent, and lunch up 45 percent in page views. “We are making many more meals for `us' rather than `me,'” Williams says. Other trends include simpler recipes, recipes with fewer ingredients, one-pot meals, sheet-pan meals, finger food and store cupboard-ingredient recipes. Vegan and vegetarian cooking is also on the rise, she says. Tofu and tempeh searches, which have declined in recent years, are now increasing again; grilled tofu was a popular search on Allrecipes this summer. Homemade pizza “is going crazy family pleasing, creative and fun, a good alternative to takeout,'' says Williams.

“People have become more comfortable with yeast, and people are also buying pizza ovens.” So, which appliances are riding these new waves? Multi-cooker sales are up, as are recipe searches for Instant Pot recipes (68 percent higher than this time last year on Allrecipes.com). Air fryers and slow cookers are also popular. And sales of bread makers were up 800 percent online in April compared with the previous April.

ORDERING IN As for restaurant dining, although more of us are eating out across the Vega Baja, take outs and food delivery is more popular than is has ever been. Another trend, of course, is QR code menus that you pull up on your phone, as opposed to paper menus. Using a QR code and a phone for payment eliminates the need for handling credit cards and cash, making the experience safer and therefore less stressful.

Small changes to banish weight gain for good The end of summer has arrived and when you put on your autumn clothes you are surprised by a few extra kilos that, if you stop to think, are the result of some summer excesses such as aperitifs before meals, a beer in the afternoon with some salty snacks, ice cream ... You want to get rid of these 2 or 3 extra kilos but without prohibited foods, without having to count calories or go hungry because you have already tried that before and it has not worked for you. So here are a few changes to help drop a pound or two...and keep it off! CHANGE # 1: EAT ONLY WHAT YOU NEED We eat more food than we need because we eat too fast or because the portions are huge. Also because we snack between meals or after dinner and many times not from hunger but from boredom. CHANGE # 2: TREAT YOURSELF But let it be only one meal week. Count the treats you allow yourself and reduce them to just one or two a week. But this one the treats that you allow yourself, enjoy and not because of the quantity but because you love the taste.

CHANGE # 3: MAKE UP, BUT DON'T SKIP MEALS A slight excess has no consequences if it is compensated later with some exercise or by eating a little less, but do not skip meal s to compensate. Doing so will not cause you to lose a ounce but it might lead you actually gain weight as you’ll be ravenous by the time you do eat. CHANGE # 4: EAT MINDFULLY When you eat "automatically" you don't even know what you eat. It is the typical unconscious snacking that we do in front of the TV, in the afternoon or late at night. When you eat, be aware of what you put in your mouth, chew it slowly and savor it . CHANGE NO. 5: INCREASE THE CONSUMPTION OF VEGETABLES Vegetables are very satiating and provide few calories. Therefore, the recommendation is that you increase the amount you eat daily. Eat salad as a starter; if you have a sandwich, add lettuce, onion slices, tomato, cucumber. In the afternoons have a green

We’re at different stages

smoothie as a snack instead of a sandwich (or those more unspeakable things that sometimes tempt us ). CHANGE NO. 6: GET TO 3 PIECES OF FRUIT A DAY Slim people have been found to eat more servings of fruit a day than those with weight problems. CHANGE # 7: WHEN COOKING, TRY THE DISH ONLY ONCE AT THE LAST MINUTE Many people are unaware that while cooking they eat almost an extra serving, which repeated day after day can add up to a considerable amount of calories. And if while you are preparing lunch or dinner you feel hungry and you cannot wait, chew a few pieces of apple or some carrot sticks.

My boyfriend of four months does not share the same values, after saying that he did when we first met. We are both the same age, and have talked about wanting to settle down in life, head for a permanent relationship and have children. I thought I’d met someone who shared the same goals, but my boyfriend insists he goes out with his mates on Friday and Saturday nights. It was my birthday recently, which fell on a Saturday, and I at least thought he would spend the whole day with me. He bought me nice presents but clearly did not spend a lot, and spent hours with my family celebrating my special day, but when the afternoon came he said he was going out with his friends as usual. He told me he blows all of his money on boozing at the weekend, and there's nothing left after that. My family think this is irresponsible and thoughtless, and said they wondered if this was the right man for me. My mother and father had doubts as it was, as he is always on his phone texting his mates and giggling. I’ve noticed while we are together, he only takes real interest in me when he wants something, then once he’s got it, he’s distracted again with his ‘other life’.

SALE

I would say you have a very immature boyfriend here. You don’t tell me his age, but whatever age he is he is acting like a teenager, and not a very nice one at that. I think you are being used. I think he is telling you what you want to hear in order to be intimate with you. You’ve said it yourself that he then bolts to his ‘other life’ afterwards. Your family don’t like him, which is a good indication, and he didn’t spend the whole of your birthday with you. What kind of future is that going to be for you, if you stay with him? Sex important to aging women A new study goes against the commonly held belief that women become less interested in sex with age. Doctors from the University of Pittsburgh looked at more than 3,200 women aged 40 to 55, and found more than a quarter (27 percent) rated sexual intimacy as “highly important throughout midlife”. “In contrast to prior literature reporting the importance of sex decreases as women move through midlife, we found that, for a quarter of women, sex remains highly important to them throughout midlife,” said lead author Dr Holly Thomas. The Pittsburgh doctors set out to uncover how a woman’s lust changes over a trajectory by analysing participants of the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation. Results – presented at the virtual North American Menopause Society (NAMS) conference – revealed that for almost half of the women (45%), sex was important during early middle age, but became less so over time. “Studies like these provide valuable insights to healthcare providers who may otherwise dismiss a woman’s waning sexual desire as a natural part of ageing,” said Dr Faubion. “Often there are other treatable reasons, such as vaginal dryness or depression, as to why a woman’s interest in sex may have decreased.”

Nails reflect overall health Your fingernails could indicate underlying health problems. From white spots to ridges you nails can be a window to your overall health. Changes in our nails can hint at problems our body is experiencing internally, which could take weeks or months to show up otherwise. People have actually had their life saved by manicure appointments because nail technicians have noticed a change in the client’s nails and urged her to get them checked out. There are a few simple signs to be aware of that could hint at issues including nutrient deficiencies and sinister illnesses. However, people should always consider if external factors have affected a nail first, such as fake nails, accidental physical damage or using products like hand sanitiser before seeing a doctor. White spots or lines One of the more common changes to fingernails, the appearance of white spots usually points to lack of zinc and calcium. To reverse the deficiency, focus of foods contains the two vitamins, with experts suggesting dairy products and leafy green vegetables for calcium, and pumpkin seeds, oysters, poultry and red meat for zinc. Pale or blue colouring Healthy nails will usually show a natural pinky colour in the nail bed, but if this changes to become pale or blue it could suggest low blood circulation around the body which can be solved by increasing levels of exercise.

A change in colour can also hint at a lack of iron in the body, which can be determined through a blood test or looking at your diet. Correcting the deficiency would result in the deformity in the nail to change or grow out. Ridges and vertical lines Nails forming ridges and vertical lines can be indicative of further deficiencies or issues associated with the gut when it is not absorbing or receiving enough nutrients. Ridges in the nails could be a sign of numerous nutrient deficiencies, such as protein, iron, zinc or minerals. Look at your diet and what you eat daily to determine what your body might be lacking in a bid to reverse it. Clubbed nails Nails curving downwards are more common in older people and can indicate severe issues with lung conditions or disease. When the nails are clubbed or if they curve downwards, this can relate to breathing difficulties, lung conditions or even cardiovascular issues. The nails often look enlarged at the ends of the fingers. Pitted nails Pitted nails are a less common condition, with tiny dots or pricks on the nail usually occurring when there's a kind of autoimmune condition taking place within the body. It's common among people who have psoriasis or alopecia, some factors can be genetic but it's worth getting them checked out by a specialist.

October is Tyre Safety Month Five Wet Weather Tips Once again, as the winter is fast approaching, we are supporting what was a U.K. based campaign focusing on one of the most crucial elements of a car, one which is so easy to check, and yet one which is so often neglected, as we join in with recognising that October is TYRE SAFETY MONTH. The need for the annual tyre safety campaign in October has once again been underlined by the research carried out by the TyreSafe team and the evidence collated. TyreSafe and tyre safety awareness depend on support to drive the change in attitudes needed to help reduce the number of tyrerelated incidents on our roads. Checking your own tyres is not as difficult as you might think, and throughout this month we will bring you our guides on how to check your tyres yourself, as well as the important information about how to read the information they provide. You should perform these checks at least one per month, maintaining the tyre pressure when you do, and with just a few minutes of dedicated time, you could be saving a lifetime of worry, or worse. We will start with the importance of tyre pressure. Proper tyre pressure is of vital importance for the safety of a vehicle, as well as to increase its

efficiency and save on fuel (and, therefore, reduce its CO2 emissions). Keeping a close eye on tyre pressure brings lost of benefits, such as a decrease in the possibility of a blowout, greater precision in the direction of

movement and a quicker correction against any unforeseen situations, better cross-sectional grip when taking a curve, and reducing fuel consumption and engine effort. It is recommended that tyres are checked at least monthly. More often is better, but monthly is better than not at all, and it’s easy to remember if you make a note, for example, that on the first or last day of the month you will check your tyres. We have detailed ways of checking tyres many times before, just search “tyres” in the search box at the top of the n332.es website, but this time we want to detail tyre pressure. First, keep in mind that the

proper pressure will depend on the type of vehicle. The manufacturer has the obligation to indicate this, depending on the tyre and the transported load. All modern vehicles have a sticker or plate on the driver’s door frame that indicates this. For older vehicles you may have to consult the owner's manual. Tyre checks should always be carried out “cold”, in other words, before the vehicle has moves anywhere on the day, or if it has been standing for a while on the day, because as the temperature increases when the tyre is being used, when the wheel is moving, it can give a false indication of pressure. Most garages have tyre top up machines, sometimes for a small fee, which also have pressure gauges built in. These gauges are calibrated frequently and offer the most precise reading, compared to say a pocket, household reader that you can purchase on the internet. Workshops will also be able to check your tyre pressure for you. If you prefer, you can get the professionals to check your tyres for you, but in the meantime, you can maintain the check yourself, and remember to add that regular date to your calendar, checking every month, to make sure your tyres offers the best results in both performance and, more importantly, safety.

Weather conditions pose the biggest risk to road users, partly due to the inexperience and lack of preparedness by drivers, and partly due to the changing dynamics of the road and driving environment. However, in preparation, here are our top tips for dealing with rain. Slow down It might seem like the most obvious thing to say, but all too often it is advice that is ignored. It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security within our vehicles but speed and adverse weather is a deadly combination. When the road is wet, your vehicle´s tyres cannot grip the road as much as in normal, dry conditions. Cornering and braking are all affected by water on the road, reducing grip and increasing stopping distances considerably, therefore, slowing down allows more time to adapt and deal with the situation. Ease off the accelerator a little and you will see the difference immediately. Avoid violent movements or sharp braking Sudden braking, acceleration or harsh movements of the steering wheel may result in loss of vehicle control. If the operations are carried out progressively, smoothly and slowly, it also gives other drivers more time to react. Remember that a smooth drive is a safer and

more efficient ride under normal conditions and even more so when it rains. Avoid driving on road markings Road markings including lane lines, crossings and markers provide less grip that the road surface and can therefore increase braking distances. Riders on two wheels should be particularly aware of this problem. Be seen During rain or reduced visibility make sure that you have your lights on. Daytime Running Lights may not be sufficient, especially during reduced visibility where headlights must be used. The timely use of indicators, including brake lights, is crucial to give other road users advanced warnings of your intentions. Keeping your vehicle under control and following all the advice for a smooth ride will also allow for an improvement in your visibility to other road users. Avoid aquaplaning risks Keep a sharp lookout for puddles and pools of water which may reduce the grip of your tyres on the road even more,

potentially creating a liquid barrier between the tyre and road surface, commonly referred to as aquaplaning. However, don´t carry out any sudden movements to avoid these puddles, simply slow down, hold the steering wheel firmly and try to keep your vehicle on a straight and level course. Whilst maintaining an adequate distance from the vehicle in front, it is often beneficial to follow vehicles through such areas as the displacement of water becomes easier. With these five basic tips your journey through the rain should be a much safer one, but remember that it is not only about how you drive your vehicle, but about the vehicle itself. Proper maintenance is crucial, checking tyres and their pressure, lights, windows, brakes and other such features on a regular basis should also reduce the risk. If in doubt, your local garage can keep a check on these for you.

Major carmakers to seek compensation from UK in nodeal Brexit

Japanese carmakers Toyota and Nissan have demand that the British government cover additional tariff costs if the UK and EU cannot agree on a freetrade agreement. The car giants have demanded that the British government reimburses them for tariff costs if the UK cannot agree on a Brexit deal with the European Union. As first reported by business publication Nikkei Asia, the two car makers are bracing themselves for a 10 percent tariff on cars exported from the UK to the EU which could come into place from Jan 1st 2021. If such market conditions do arise, they want the government to bear the brunt of the tariff costs. Both companies make cars in Britain, with Toyota producing the Corolla and the heavily related joint venture project, the Suzuki Swace, at its Motor Manufacturing plant in Burnaston,

Derbyshire. It has an annual production capacity of 180,000 cars. Nissan’s Sunderland plant is larger, with the capacity to produce 500,000 cars a year there. It currently builds the Qashqai, Juke and Leaf for supply in the UK and Europe, primarily, and is Britain’s biggest car factory. Employees remain at work within Honda’s Swindon factory, despite the fact that the facility will be closed next year. Last month bodies that represent the car industry both in the UK and Europe calling or both sides to urgently agree a free trade agreement. It warns that if this isn’t done it could cost the sector €110bn in lost trade over a five-year period. The World Trade organisation tariffs, which would be imposed in the event of a no deal Brexit, would see 10% added to the cost of a car and up to 22% for larger trucks and vans.

Worst September for UK car sales Reports from the motoring industry have revealed that new UK car registrations fell 4.4% in September, making it the worst September this century – September is usually the industry's second most important month. There were just 328,041 new registrations during September 2020, said the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The car sector has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, which closed factories and showrooms. September is normally second to March as the industry's most important sales month, because licence plate changes typically prompt a spike in demand. However, the SMMT said that September saw lowest new car registrations since the current licence plate system began in 1999. These figures are unlikely to generate much optimism in an industry which, in the SMMT's own words, has just gone through one of the bleakest periods in its history. There had been some hopes among the industry that delayed reaction demand from buyers unable to head out during lockdown would produce a boost to sales later in the year. However, this did not happen. Even worse, it seems as though the economic uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is making buyers wary of buying or leasing big-ticket items - such as cars. There is some good news for the industry, though. Sales of electric cars are rising fast, even as the market for diesels continues to collapse.

Jorge Almiron, the Elche manager, had a challenge on his hands following his teams 0-3 defeat during their first game in La Liga. Every game in Spain's top division for the newly promoted side is going to be tough, but fans were hoping for 2 wins last week as we faced two of the weaker sides. On Wednesday evening Elche played away at the small 8,146 seater Ipurua stadium, the home of Eibar in Bilbao. Eibar were responsible for Elche's CF demotion from La Liga at the end of the 2014/15 season. They denounced the Franjiverdes for financial failure, after we accumulated debts of 6.7 million euros with the Tax Office and 5.5 million euros with the Football Association, all of which have now been paid off!. This was our first opportunity to play Eibar and we were all wishing for a win (aka revenge) Elche CF rose to the challenge and even the commentators were saying that they were well organised, had great shape, passed accurately and were looking like a polished seasoned team. On 37 minutes our chance came and Lucas Boye took it! He pounced on the deflection from his team mate, Morentes, shot and drove the ball through the legs of Eibar defender Rodruguez and past

Dimitrovic the goalie, into the far corner of the net. A brilliant goal and a fantastic achievement for the newly promoted side. Both sides lacked opportunities during the second half, although Eibar missed a golden chance on 52 minutes. After a VAR consultation, they were awarded a penalty. Up stepped Exposito, an experienced and seasoned taker, but he fired it high over Edgar's goal. The game finished 0-1 and Elche had a massive moral boosting 3 points. With not much rest Elche's next opponent was Huesca at home on Saturday. The statistics give a true reflection of the match. Elche had 51% possession with 2 shots on goal, whilst the visitors to the Martinez Valero had 18 shots on goal with 49% possession. It was the Elche defence which literally saved the night, with Edgar making save after save. Our great goalie even punched the ball off the head of a Huesca striker, executing a miraculous save. Elche could have taken the lead on 78

minutes. In an almost identical replay of the Wednesday night goal, the ball landed at the feet of Lucas Boye. Disappointingly he kicked it just wide of the goal. Final score 0-0. Elche achieved 4 points from a possible 6, and after just 3 matches are out of the relegation zone and in 16th place, with all of the teams below having played more games than us. The Franjiverdes take on 17th placed Alaves on the weekend of the 18th October, following a two week break for International Matches. This gives Jorge Almiron time to work on his team and maybe acquire a few much needed strikers or midfielders before the domestic transfer and loan window closes on the 16th October. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. Jessica Hayes

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Yeah, I don’t think Edinson Cavani is the answer. Unless, of course, he is actually a world-class central defender or leftback. The match at Old Trafford showed the world everything that is still wrong with Manchester United - and Tottenham were generous enough to give them a one-goal head start. Hugo Lloris obviously knew what was coming when he made zero effort to stop Bruno Fernandes’ penalty after 90 seconds, because 45 minutes later Spurs were sitting in their dressing room 4-1 to the good and Erik Lamela was off his lifesupport machine. A clear 9.9 on the playacting-ometer from the Argentine, almost giving Graeme Souness another heart attack as he reminded the world that ‘we don’t do that over here’. Er, yes Graeme. Yes we do. Considering Hueng-Min Son was supposed to be injured, he did OK I am sure we’d all agree. In this new world season we find ourselves in, Harry Kane is playing the new role of provider and Sonny the jet-heeled assassin. Had he been fit, there’s every chance Nemanja Matic would have called it a day at half time given how Son burned him (before his one terrible touch of the half). Ole clearly agreed, hooking the Serb. Eric Bailly had not started a Premier League match since February and it’s probably not unreasonable to suggest he won’t start one again until next February after his performance. Even Robbie Savage would have to admit that Bailly’s defending was a little

questionable. Not that Savage was the only pundit having a bad weekend people were claiming Ben Davies coming on for Sonny wasn’t a like for like swap. Pogba must have thought it was, the way he thought laying on the floor was a new way to tackle. Suddenly it feels like the mid-1980s once again as United are desperately trying to get back to the glory days and Everton top the table. For all the naysayers that claimed James Rodriguez wouldn’t fancy it when the weather got a bit colder and the Liverpudlian rain started to pour down - what say you now? James helped himself to a couple against a Brighton side who are getting way more plaudits than their actual results deserve. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored once again, continuing his double-edged effort of helping Everton be good once again but also driving Harry Kane to be good enough to help England win the Euros next summer. There was one plus for Jordan Pickford. He didn’t make the biggest clanger by a Liverpool-based goalkeeper this weekend. Adrian, in for Alisson, gifted Villa their opening goal ‘playing out from the back’ - a phrase that is really starting to grate on me. Given the King Kloppo didn’t sound like Alisson was likely to be back anytime soon, what odds a late ring round all the agents representing toplevel shot-stoppers? Not that Adrian could be blamed for the rest. People (including myself, obviously) scoffed at talk of Ollie Watkins being Golden Boot material but a first half hat-trick against the champions makes you sit up and take

a little bit of notice. Virgil cleaning out loan signing Ross Barkley at 3-1, just before the 4th, makes you realise that it’s been a weird weekend. If I was to choose a word to describe Liverpool’s performance it would be sloppy. Very sloppy. And to think there were quite a few Liverpool fans mocking United fans for their score just hours before. Mind you, at least Liverpool scored two, eh? Judging his performance at Stamford Bridge, you get the feeling someone’s told Wilf Zaha he’s not going anywhere once again. Zaha and Palace were pretty much non-existent as Chelsea strolled to a 4-0 win in such a way that means we know nothing about their new goalie, Mendy. Equally, we were able to see what Ben Chilwell brings to Lampard’s attack but having a left-back good at going forward wasn’t Chelsea’s issue - it was the fact that Marcos Alonso couldn’t be bothered with the defensive part and we didn’t really see Chilwell put through his paces in that regard. I’m actually with Tammy Abraham too - I find Jorginho’s penalty technique that annoying too, so annoying I’d be looking to nab the ball off him the next time one came around. So Peppy G and Bielsa have met before have they? Someone should have mentioned it. And was it a 10 hour conversation or an 11 hour conversation? There was conflicting information on this one as it was repeated over and over again before, during and after Leeds’ entertaining 1-1 draw with top-four hopefuls Manchester City. Yes, yes it is early in the season - of course it is. But the last time City won the title it took them slightly longer than four matches to drop five points. In yet

another dose of 80s nostalgia, City currently sit in the bottom half with West Ham and Aston Villa higher than them. I know, West Ham. Crazy. Leicester City, understandably having battered City last weekend, probably dismissed West Ham as an easy three points but Skypemaster David Moyes navigated the Hammers to a stunning 3-0 win from his sofa. Football management can actually be that easy. Sheffield United have a severe dose of the second seasons, especially given how they’ve spanked £20m+ on a striker who hardly set the world alight for Swansea in the Championship last season. On top of that, they’ve forgotten how to win football matches and lost 21 to Arsenal who just about stopped laughing at David Luiz’s bum fluff long enough to compose themselves in time to take three points. Already relegated Fulham were marginally less hilarious in defence in losing 1-0 to Wolves. Soon to be relegated West Bromwich Albion were turned over 2-0 by Southampton, raising the obvious question of when on Earth did Oriel Romeou last score a goal? Personally, I think the world should be a little bit nicer to Steve Bruce. He’s doing a good job at Newcastle and there’s absolutely no chance they are going down this season. A 3-1 win against Burnley sees them sitting very pretty right now, even if Burnley were so bad that manager Sean Dyche claimed he could have played against his lot. Don’t say that too loud, Dychey, Ed Woodward is looking for a new centre back or three. As far as we know, Phil Bardsley is still trying to catch Alain Saint-Maxim.

Memorable climax as Ladies bring Valencian Championships to a close With the summer competitive bowls season completely destroyed by the COVID 19 Pandemic and, despite many criticisms of the decision to hold the Linea Directa Lawn Bowls Championships, the competition reached it’s concluding stages with the six finals played at Greenlands Bowls Club last Monday and Tuesday. Although not all doubters were convinced of the merits of holding the 2020 tournament there is no doubt that the competition has been a major success, attracting many hundreds of competitive bowlers back onto the rinks when they might otherwise have continued to put off their return to the sport. Both La Marina and Greenlands Bowls Clubs must be congratulated for making their greens available to the organisers and in so doing, putting into place the strict guidelines that ensured a safe environment in which bowlers were able to demonstrate their many skills Rinks and equipment were sanitised by teams of volunteers on a daily basis in addition to keeping the greens and surrounding areas in pristine condition. But this year the competition has been rather more than simply producing competitive bowling. It has restored the pre pandemic confidence that many bowlers had in their ability to play the sport in a safe situation, that can only bode well for the upcoming winter tournaments and competitions that now lie ahead. After two weeks of first class bowling that produced many memorable highlights the first of the finals was held on Monday morning with the trio from Country Bowls, Brenda Jiggens, John Jukes and Graham Richardson taking on the Emerald Isle threesome of John Pooley,

Andy Miles and Sue Bosworth. After 13 ends the match was tied at 1010 but 5 points in consecutive ends put the Country Bowls trio into a healthy lead which they held to take the win by 17-13, despite John Pooley putting off eventual defeat by initially killing the final end. The Monday afternoon session saw Andy Miles and Peta Rhodes of the Emerald Isle quickly out of the blocks in the Mixed Pairs as they built up an 8-1 lead against Tom Spencer and Margaret McLaughlin of La Marina. Seven points in the next two ends, however, saw the start of La Marina’s fightback, after which they claimed a further seven in the following four ends as they never looked back to claim the final victory against their favoured opponents by 20-16 Tuesday morning at the Greenlands venue saw the finals of the Men’s and Ladies Pairs. In the Men’s event Ernie Bennett and Gary Ponsford from Emerald Isle were matched with Gary Thorpe and Charlie Watkins of Vistabella. After an even early exchange the Vistabella pair surged into a 13-6 lead with a four on the 9th end, from which they never looked back. Three points on the 12th and a further couple on the 13th end reinforced their position as they held on the take the match 19-15. Tuesday morning’s second final was the Ladies Pairs event where, once again, we saw a contest that swayed in both directions with, first, San Miguel’s Val Hignett and Anita Brown building up a sizeable 11-3 lead against Maggie Furness and Sandra Burrows after the 7th end, but then came the fightback with the trailing pair picking up nine shots without reply in the next 7 ends, before an inspired 5 point return on the 15th

end put the San Miguel twosome back in control. Vistabella were unable to respond with Hignett and Brown tidying up the match by 22-12. The two blue ribbon events, the Men’s and Ladies Singles were played alongside each other on Tuesday afternoon. Defending champion Peter Morgan of Quesada met the Emerald Isle’s Andy Miles in the Men’s competition quickly building up a 6-1 advantage as he picked up points on 5 of the first 6 ends. A mini comeback then saw Miles take 4 shots on ends 7 and 8 before steady play allowed the Quesada blue to edge in front by 15-12 after 18 ends. However disaster struck for Miles of the Isle’s on end 19 when exceptional bowling from the champion saw Morgan pick up a maximum 4 points before going on to close out the match by 21-12. As Morgan became the first player in the history of the tournament to retain his crown a battle royale was being played out in the Ladies Singles final between the 2018 champion, Ann Marie Robertson of the Emerald Isle, and Maggie Furness from Vistabella, two rinks down. The opening 5 ends saw the two ladies match each other point for point before Maggi Furness, despite having played in the Ladies Pairs Final earlier in the day,

ground out a 19-10 lead to put the title within her reach. Mini rocket Stephenson, however, had other ideas as, from a seemingly helpless position, she had her supporters on their feet, battling back to a 20-19 lead, scoring on 8 consecutive ends without reply. But with victory in her grasp and holding shot, with the final bowl of the 29th end, Furness delivered the perfect wood, moving the jack to give her the 2 points she needed to claim her first Valencian title. The spectators agreed that they had just witnessed one of the finest Ladies finals in the history of the competition, a fitting climax to two successful weeks of socially distanced lawn bowling After the games all presentations were made, again they were socially distanced, and thanks given by Valencian Delegate

Bob Donnelly to sponsors Linea Directa, the owners of La Marina and Greenland’s complexes, this year’s Competition Secretary John O’Brien, as well as the coordinators, umpires & markers at both venues.
