Police stop show at Villamartin Plaza See Main Advert on page 30-31

Thursday saw Villamartin Plaza host its end of summer finale, with a number of local acts set to entertain the audience, culminating with local favourites The Cages. However, the proceedings were brought to a swift close after police received a complaint that Covid restrictions were being breeched and

therefore people’s health put at risk. The police arrived, armed with tape measures and soon found that some bars and restaurants were not complying with the national law, which stipulates reduced capacity and a distance of 1.5m from chair-back to chair-back. There were also concerns that people were moving between tables without mask, which is also illegal in Spain. The police posted a comment on their social media pages saying that the ‘concert, which had attracted more than 250 people, had been closed for contravening the regulations’. Unfortunately, the actions of the few spoilt it for the many. Casey Shaddock, President of Villamartin Plaza, had worked hard to gain all the relevant permissions from the Generalitat de Valencian to ensure that the event was a success. Casey said: “The terraces are rented by each individual establishment and they of course manage the space as an extension of their business. It was

heartbreaking as most were sticking to the rules, but the police found some irregularities. There were no denuncias issued on the night but the police did stop the music as they said it fuelled the party atmosphere and encouraged a disregard for the rules. They said they would return periodically to make sure the restrictions were being followed.” Obviously, people were disappointed and there followed a considerable discussion on social media. However, the authorities in Spain have made the rules quite clear and all businesses, bars and restaurants know exactly what they are and how the affected their particular business. These restrictions are not new and have been in place since August. Of course the concern is that if bars and restaurants continue to flout the rules, then these measure could be increased. Orihuela Costa is very lucky to continue to have an entertainment allowance at all. In neighbouring areas such as Quesada and San Miguel there is a no music policy.

Benidorm launches all inclusive offer to entice tourists

Benidorm has launched a new allinclusive deal to tempt tourists back to the popular resort after the Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on bookings there. A new initiative has been launched by representatives of the tourism and hostelry industry offering all inclusive stays with accommodation and meals included for as little as â‚Ź209 per person for a week. Visitors can choose to stay at any of 250 apartments in the city and have breakfast, lunch and dinner at a number of participating restaurants. Packages can be booked through the Benidorm Resort website - which is currently available only in Spanish, though bookings written in English are being accepted. The deals include food and drinks, though alcohol is not included in the price.

Bookings began being accepted on October 1, and the offer currently runs through until the end of March 2021. Organiser of the scheme Nathalie Rosemberg told the Costa Blanca People that there are now more than 40 restaurants participating in the scheme, a list of which can be found on the website. Nathalie has also provided us with a PDF detailing a full list of price options from accommodation only, breakfast included, breakfast and lunch included and all meals included. There are also group discounts which are detailed in the PDF if you would like a copy, simply send us an email to office@costablancapeople.com and we will send you the English language version. As Benidorm is a popular destination with expats from the southern Costa Blanca, the scheme is sure to be popular among residents here.

U3A Groups Fair returns

The long awaited Groups Fair of Torrevieja U3A. It was the first major event to be held by the group since the 'troubles' began back in March and there was great concern about how many people would turn up. As a result of the ongoing problems, the size of the fair had to be scaled back and was restricted to only 19 out of the 48 potential activities that we have on offer. The displays had to be also kept to a minimum. However, the fair was well attended and attracted a steady throughflow of visitors, mostly existing members but a reasonable number of new people also, who were most welcome. About 20 of the new visitors signed up for membership of the group. It is hoped that in the near future the U3A may be able to add at least one more new group to complement the existing activities. Details will hopefully soon appear on the website torreviejau3a.org so keep checking in.

Drug gang and violent addicts arrested in Torrevieja Guardia Civil arrested 14 people in Torrevieja as alleged perpetrators of 12 charges of theft, two robberies with violence, three robberies with force, a crime against public health and a crime of belonging to a criminal group and for allegedly stealing bags in order to buy drugs. The arrests focused on two groups – the drug dealers who used violence and intimidation to ensure addicts’ debts were paid, and the addicts themselves who resorted to petty theft to pay for their supply. The investigation began almost a year ago when investigators focused their inquiries on a family group believed to be involved in the ‘retail’ sale of drugs in Torrevievja. Throughout the surveillance period, officers verified that the family of dealers, and their accomplices were “extremely” violent with those who built up any debts with them for drugs. More than one "client" was injured as a result of the a beating or was threatened with a

large knife if the debt was not cleared within the stipulated time. During a series of raids related to the investigation, officers seized 181 grams of marijuana, 200 grams of hashish, 1.5 grams of cocaine, three vehicles and 540 euro in cash. In addition, 22 mobile phones, two laptops, three tablets, a music system, two video game consoles, a simulated BB gun, two televisions and a bicycle valued at more than 5,000 euros were found. All the detainees, four of them members of the same family, were arrested and remanded in custody, except for one which was a minor. Due to the large number of items seized during the raids, officers suspected that they were dealing with stolen goods, so a second phase of the operation was initiated to locate the rightful owners of the seized items. It was then that officers realized that they were dealing with a second group of suspects,

a group of drug addicts, who did not hesitate to use violence to steal things in order to pay for the drugs they bought from the first criminal group. According to police reports, the drug addicts did not hesitate to steal bags and belongings either by snatching them, or simply creating an absurd distraction to confuse their victims and rob them. In the event that they were confronted or challenged by the victim, they did not hesitate to use knives to frighten them, even going so far as to stab one of the victims in the abdominal area on one occasion. As the second phase of the investigation drew to a close at the end of September, nearly all of the stolen objects had been returned to their owners.

Ask the Mayor Do you live in Torrevieja? Do you have a question about the town? Perhaps you have a great idea, or are concerned about something, or you need to find out how you go about a certain administrative process? The Costa Blanca People has established a new link with the town hall in order to ensure that all citizens’ questions are passed directly to the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón. We have had a huge response and the Mayor’s office is working through all the questions received to date by email and Facebook. Below are some answers to reader questions with more to follow in next week’s edition. Debbie Joslin asks the Mayor: “I understand that the Spanish Government will recognise that I live in Spain if I can obtain an NIE and Padron before the end of this year and will then extend my getting residency until June 2021? The earliest I can get an appointment before 12th January 2021. How will this affect my status? Many thanks.” The Mayor replies, “For the British, the Brexit agreements give until December 31 to regularize their situation, those who already have the EU certificate (green paper and green card) remain valid until further notice, for those who want to apply for residence for the first time, I advise you to request it now. However, we can at your disposal the Department of International Residents (Plaza Capdepont S / N) so they can help you. Thank you, Regards.”

Janie Street asks the Mayor: “I was wondering if you could enlighten me as to why some areas of Torrevieja is allowed to have live music and others aren't? A reply would be much appreciated. I have messaged Gitte Lund Thomsen the councillor for expats and have had no acknowledgement! I understand the problem with Covid, but it seems totally unfair that some people are doing it and others aren't? If we are all in the Valencian Generalitat. Regards.”

Eduardo Dolón

The Mayor replies, “Janie, we are working on a new ordinance that allows live music, the one we currently have does not allow anywhere in town. Thank you. Regards.” Simon asks the Mayor, “I would like to know why the padron process has become so complicated that even solicitors are having trouble getting it right. Surely it is in the interest of Torrevieja to have as many people on padron as possible to receive funds from the central government. There are no appointments available and at the padron office we were told they only do 5 padrons a day. What are they doing with the rest of their time considering a padron takes maximun 10-15 minutes to process. Would it not be better to get a number instead in the morning like the old days or increase the amount of appointments available to book online? Doing it electronically is a struggle, especially for foreigners considering language barriers etcetera.” The Mayor replies, “The implementation of Electronic Administration was necessary because it is a city with a large population, we are aware of the problems that arise and the difficulties that appear when carrying out procedures, but I am convinced that in the near future, all these changes will improve services and facilitate procedures. However, at the moment appointments

are being provided for urgent cases that absolutely need registration or certificates. For any emergency, do not hesitate to contact the Department of International Residents located in Plaza Capdepont S / N and we will assist you. Thank you. Regards.” Paul Hewitt asks the Mayor, “As President of an Urbanisation on Altos del Limonar, please would you ask the Mayor: When are the Policia/Guardia going to stop the botellon held nightly at the petanque courts at c. Effren Gutierrez Mateo. Cars are being parked in the urb. to avoid main street parking/notice. Noise regularly until 4am and later ! Gatherings of up to 20+ all without masks/social distancing. The pictures are mild compared to other nights, with smashed vodka bottles etc.” The Mayor replies, “Local Police and Guardia Civil work together to eradicate the botellones from the city, an invaluable help would be, when you witness it, that you call the telephones enabled for this purpose, both the police and the civil guard, in order that the patrol could go there precise moment to be able to denounce the referred facts. The best telephone numbers to contact are Local Police: 092 or 965705326 Guardia Civil: 062 or 965710113/965710190.” Send your questions or comments to the editor, aoife@costablancapeople.com

Medical certs required for children who miss a day of school Some schools in the Alicante province are requiring families of schoolchildren who miss one day of class due to a simple illness to provide a medical certificate to confirm that they do not have Covid-19 in order to allow them to rejoin their classmates. Parents of the children in question have reported these claims to local newspapers, complaining of a lack of information from schools about the exact protocol to follow, and claiming that in some instances, health authorities have refused to issue these documents, resulting in the children having to stay at home for two weeks, quarantined as if they were infected. One mother of a four year old girl decided not to send her daughter to school after the child had a sleepless night. The next day, the covid coordinator of the school contacted her to inform her that if she did not present proof that her daughter did not have the virus, she would not be able to return to class on Monday. The mother then went to her local health centre and the paediatrician was able to give her daughter a diagnosis that she had no symptoms of Covid-19, but refused to provide her with a medical certificate out of "precaution". The child is now unable to go to school until she has completed a period of self isolation. Another mother of a five year old girl from Elche, claims that the school sent a letter to parents indicating that children who had a runny nose should not attend class unless they had a medical certificate ruling out Covid-19. The mother contacted the family

paediatrician and was informed that having a runny nose is not linked to the virus, and telling her that she should not go to the health centre so as not to overload the system. She was also told that health workers are trying to give care to those who really need it and they are not there to issue certificates because the system would collapse. Doctors and Paediatricians in the Alicante province already issued a warning before schools returned that their job was to care for the sick, not to certify healthy patients. Parents across the region have claimed that in this ‘new normal’ it is impossible for them to reconcile their work with their children's school, since from one

day to the next the class could end up quarantined. Meanwhile, the school principals have assured that they are only following the strict protocols established by the Health Ministry. Parents have also explained that young schoolchildren often have runny noses, colds and stomach bugs, and in many cases are absent from school several times during the year. This is something that has become a new worry for parents, since now it can cost them time away from work, between the time it takes to go to the health centre for a certificate "that they will not give you", and a two week quarantine with the child.

Is your UK bank’s passport about to expire? As a no-deal Brexit is looking more and more likely, there are many changes looming in the financial world. Currently UK financial institutions, like your high street bank, are able to operate throughout the European Union under a passport scheme. This enables citizens within the EU to hold bank accounts in countries other than where they currently have resident status. If no agreement can be reached between the EU and the UK, then financial institutions will no longer be able to offer their services to Spanish residents.

Lloyds and Barclays banks have started writing to their customers here in Spain telling them that they will have their bank accounts closed by December 31st. It seems almost certain that all other banks will follow suit. It’s not just high street banks that will no longer be able to deal with Spanish residents. If you still have your UK financial adviser, they will also no longer be able to advise you as their licence will no longer cover EU countries. Many people will not want to bring their savings from their UK bank to their Spanish bank. Worries about currency exchange and possible language difficulties are just two reasons for

people to feel unhappy about this prospect. If you have savings in UK banks or indeed a UK financial adviser and are looking for solutions, then help is at hand, but why should you choose Seagate to advise you? All our advisers were trained at Lloyds Bank in the UK. We pride ourselves on putting our clients first. We have a fully staffed office in Benijofar. GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Dominating sterling’s week of ups and downs was Brexit once more, bogging down the pound at some points, but providing some bright spots nevertheless. Boris Johnson delivered his keynote speech at the Conservatives’ annual conference, albeit online, and focused heavily on antipandemic measures, wind power and a broken housing market. Pointedly ignored, Brexit was not mentioned and investors leaned on the pound. The Bank of England occasionally had something to say this week, but even it did not venture far beyond the potential effects of Brexit and Covid-19. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas’s comment that a no-deal Brexit would be “irresponsible” found support among investors but the UK PM was tightlipped about such an outcome. The argument all week has been between commentators who expect the EU to call the UK PM’s bluff with a take-it-or-leave-it ultimatum of its own, and those that believe an agreement is close. Two conflicting stories pulled sterling in opposite directions. One had it that the PM would abandon negotiations with the EU if the outline of a deal is not clear by 15 October. The other characterised the UK and EU as “lurching towards a deal”. European Council President Charles Michel said it was “time for the UK to put its cards on the table… The EU prefers a deal, but not at any cost”.Both UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen agreed to another month of negotiations in order to “close significant gaps”. Aside from Brexit, the RICS House Price Balance provided light relief for the pound, showing UK residential property is still very much in demand, rising to a long-term high of +61% in September, mirroring the story from Halifax about house prices rising by an annual 7.3%. Britain’s construction sector purchasing managers’ index rose two points

to 56.8, indicating a sharp expansion in September. However, gross domestic product recovered by only 2.1% during August, less than half of what was expected. So it is fair to say sterling got lucky, strengthening by an average of 0.3% and adding more than one US cent. EUR With the clock running down as we head to the end of the year, investors welcomed the improved spirit around securing a trade deal and avoiding a no deal Brexit, but where the pound got lucky, the euro got nothing. On average it was unchanged against the other major currencies and a third of a cent lower against sterling. It did pick up two thirds of a US cent but it did it the hard way, covering a one cent range and changing direction half a dozen times. Economic data from the euro zone varied between mediocre and uninspiring. Inflation fell to -0.3%, a five-and-a-half-year low, and factory orders in Germany were down by 2.2% in the year to August. The services sector PMI fell back into the shrinkage zone at 48.0, dragged down by weakness in Spain, Italy and France, most notably Spain’s 42.2 – a four-month low.Euroland’s composite PMI only barely made the cut at 50.4. The brightest note came from euro zone retail sales which scored monthly and annual gains of 4.4% and 3.7%. The EUR was almost flat against the GBP from the news. The European Central Bank was mostly quiet. The summary of September’s monetary policy meeting showed that not all members of the Governing Council agreed with the bank’s low-forever forward guidance. However, President Christine Lagarde said separately that monetary stimulus will continue until the Covid-19 crisis is over: “We should guard against the premature withdrawal of these support measures.”

One in 10 worldwide may Spain plans ambitious reform have had virus, WHO says of crushed economy One in 10 people around the world may have contracted Covid-19, the World Health Organisation said, at a special meeting of WHO leaders. A top official said the estimate meant "the vast majority of the world remains at risk". Just over 35m people have been confirmed as being infected with coronavirus - the WHO's estimate puts the true figure at closer to 800m. Experts have long said the real number of cases would exceed those confirmed. The WHO is meeting at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the global response to the pandemic. Ten months on, the crisis shows no sign of ending. Several countries are seeing second waves after easing restrictions and in some cases numbers are even higher. The estimate that 10% of the world's population has contracted the virus came from Mike Ryan, the executive director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme. "This varies depending on country, it varies from urban to rural, it varies between different groups," he said. "But what it does mean is that

the vast majority of the world remains at risk. We know the pandemic will continue to evolve but we also know we have the tools that work to suppress transmission and save lives right now and they are at our disposal." Calling for solidarity and firm leadership from countries, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there had been marked differences in the number of cases around the world.

"Although all countries have been affected by this virus, we must remember that this is an uneven pandemic. Ten countries account for 70% of all reported cases and deaths and just three countries account for half," he said. More than one million people have died from the virus, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. After the US, India and Brazil have seen the most infections.

Spain will use emergency European Union coronavirus funds for an ambitious overhaul of its economy that will ramp up public investment next year and should create hundreds of thousands of new jobs by 2023, the prime minister has said. Reeling from Western Europe’s worst COVID-19 caseload and the deepest recession since its civil war, Spain’s tourismdependent economy is set to dive 11.2 percent this year. But against slogans saying “Resistance” and “Advance”, Socialist premier Pedro Sanchez sought to change the mood, saying the government would spend 72 billion euros ($85 billion) of EU funds between 2021 and 2023. Investment spending would rise by 27 billion euros in 2021, thanks to the EU money, he said, predicting 800,000 new jobs would be created over the next three years. The pandemic has decimated employment, with 450,000 fewer jobs in September compared to the same period last year. “It’s not just about recovering the GDP that the pandemic took from us, it’s about growing in a

different way, with a more robust, fairer and more sustainable way of growing,” Sanchez said in a televised address on the government’s economic plans. “This is a historic reform, long called for and needed now more than ever,” added the prime minister, who leads a coalition government without a majority in parliament. Spain is to receive 140 billion euros until 2026 - 77 billion in grants and the rest in loans from the vast EU pot designed mainly to help the bloc’s worsthit southern nations.

Sanchez outlined ten areas of investment - from transforming cities to boosting gender equality - and said 37 percent of the funds would go to the “green economy” and 33 percent to digital transition.

Another at least 12 percent will go to specific environmental projects. “We are the Costa Rica of Europe, one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world”, he said. Elvira Rodriguez, a lawmaker with the conservative People’s Party and former head of Spain’s market regulator, dismissed Sanchez’ plan as vague and his presentation as “pharaonic. Incomplete, without sufficient guarantees and mortgaging Spain’s future for years,” she tweeted. Addressing concerns Spain may struggle to channel the funds, Sanchez also announced a law to remove bureaucratic bottlenecks and administrative obstacles. Despite this year’s dire panorama, Spain is also forecasting a GDP rebound of more than 7 percent next year, possibly up to nearly 10 percent if the 2021 allocation of EU funds is fully disbursed. But Sanchez needs to gather a majority in parliament to pass the new budget - a challenge in a fragmented assembly unable to approve a new full-year budget since 2016.

Shop Local

SHOP LOCAL Last month, the Costa Blanca People launched our ‘Shop Local’ initiative, a campaign to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. So far, the campaign has been really well received among local business owners and it is encouraging to see so many businesses becoming advocates for the campaign by sharing the logo, supporting the initiative and voicing their support for fellow business owners in the area. Already, the campaign has had a positive impact with some of those displaying the logo already reporting that they have won new business this week as a direct result which is a wonderful result! We are seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic and believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. With local businesses still reeling from lockdown, this summer has been difficult for us all. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the winter months. Why have we launched this campaign? As the global pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to life on the Costa Blanca, we all need to do everything we possibly can to help our local economy

bounce back stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve launched our Shop Local campaign. We want to engage in partnership with local business leaders to give our towns, commercial centres, retailers, small businesses and charitable organisations a boost. We want to help businesses, shops, restaurants and entrepreneurs the support they need to continue to make the southern Costa Blanca a great place to live, work and socialise. How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal in your social media posts. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open

We are trying to bring a little bit of England to Spain during these hard times offering people the fruit and vegetables they miss from home. Help small businesses and shop local

along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours. Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Making this campaign visible – on your social media (check our our ‘frame’ for your profile picture, search for ‘Shop Local Costa Blanca’ in frame options when you edit your profile picture to add a frame), in your window or place of business will help ensure it works and stays in the forefront of people’s minds. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Why shopping local works Shopping at local businesses puts money right back into the local economy, and by spending money in our local shops, restaurant, café or bar, we can all do our bit to help revive our local economy. Supporting our local businesses

Taking over a business is challenging at the best of times, but during a global pandemic is interesting to say the least. Luckily we have the most amazing customers and the new menu is going down really well. The shop local campaign is genius in its simplicity - encouraging everyone to support their local bars, shops and restaurants. We fully support it.

creates jobs in local communities. Helping to grow the number of jobs in our local areas makes for a better place to live and work, which then creates a healthy economy for the community here on the Costa Blanca. Small businesses are often run by people who live in or near our local community. As the southern Costa Blanca continues to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people may have missed. Shop local, Costa Blanca It is our hope that Shopping Locally becomes a daily practice to grow a stronger community for us all. Across the southern Costa Blanca region, we value our local businesses and understand the impact that every one of our hard-earned euros can have on the vitality and survival of the places where we live. We all know that spending our money locally not only supports our friends and neighbours who run the businesses that make our communities unique, but also the critical public services that keep us safe and uphold our quality of life. Advocates We are still looking for advocates for our Shop Local campaign. To get

Orphaned, penniless but ambitious and with a mind crammed with imagination and fresh ideas, the American Phineas Taylor Barnum will always be remembered as the man with the gift to effortlessly blur the line between reality and fiction. Thirsty for innovation and hungry for success, the son of a tailor will manage to open a wax museum but will soon shift focus to the unique and peculiar, introducing extraordinary, never-seen-before live acts on the circus stage. Some will call Barnum's wide collection of oddities, a freak show; however, when the obsessed showman gambles everything on the opera singer Jenny Lind to appeal to a high-brow audience, he will somehow lose sight of the most important aspect of his life: his family. Will Barnum risk it all to be accepted?

Goldie Hawn reveals real reason she hasn't married Kurt Russell Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are one of Hollywood's favourite couples, and are often pictured looking loved-up on the red carpet. Yet something they are always asked is why they haven't got married. The Overboard actress explained the reason for this during a recent interview – and it sounds like they have a great attitude towards their relationship. Goldie explained: "I would have been long divorced if I’d been married. Marriage is an interesting psychological thing. If you need to feel bound to someone, then it's important to be married. "If you have independence, if you have enough money and sense of independence and you like your independence, there’s something psychological about not being married because it gives

you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. Goldie and Kurt have been together since Valentine's Day 1983, and celebrated 37 years together in February. They share son Wyatt Russell, 34, and both have children from previous relationships. Goldie is mum to Oliver and Kate Hudson, who she shares with ex-husband Bill Hudson, while Kurt shares Boston Russell with ex-wife Season Hubley. The celebrity couple are also doting grandparents to six grandchildren, who keep them on their toes. Goldie previously told Australian Women's Weekly: "A good family is the answer to happiness. "I look at our kids and grandchildren and there's nothing in the world that could make me as

proud as I am of all of them." During lockdown, Kurt and Goldie have been isolating in the mountains, and have been making the most of their downtime. Now that the restrictions have been lifted, they have also been enjoying spending time with the rest of their family. Back in August, Goldie shared a fun video on Instagram of herself, Kurt and Boston dancing in the kitchen while washing the dishes. Meanwhile, to mark Independence Day, Goldie and Kurt went on a road trip out of the city, and the First Wives Club star shared a sweet picture of them relaxing by a creek. "Nature enlivens the heart. Kurt and I took to the road. Look what we found: nature’s perfection! We are all as perfect as we desire. My love abound," she captioned the image.

Strictly's Ranvir Singh responds to stark warnings Ranvir Singh has responded to the advice she's received from her Good Morning Britain costars ahead of her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing. The 43-year-old presenter revealed that former Strictly contestants Susanna Reid and Kate Garraway had plenty of wisdom to share with her, as each of the presenter had their own stints on the hit BBC One show. Susanna, who appeared on the dance show in 2013, made sure to tell Ranvir to "avoid" the the Cha Cha and the Samba. Meanwhile Kate, who took to the dance floor in 2007, shared her sound advice with the telly presenter. Ranvir revealed: "I think Susanna Reid's immediate advice

was at all costs to try and avoid the Cha Cha and the Samba. But I don't know if I can avoid them! "Kate Garraway said, 'You realise a few weeks in how serious the training is, so don't miss the opportunity to really hit the ground running and take it seriously right at the beginning'." Meanwhile Piers Morgan 's advice was a little less sound than his co-stars', as Piers told Ranvir that she’s looking "slinkier" these days before advising her to "show more flesh" to win the series. Earlier this week, Susanna complimented Ranvir by saying: "Can we just say Ranvir, you’re looking absolutely fabulous." Piers then chimed in, saying: "Can we not objectify Ranvir in

the workplace please?" Outspoken Piers then gave Ranvir some questionable advice ahead of her stint on the show, telling her: "Am I allowed to say you look a bit slinkier? That's the most covered up you're going to be all series. It's going to get shorter and lower." Elsewhere, Ranvir admitted that her family's reaction has been nothing short of supportive, as she said: "The reaction has been really lovely." She added: "My family have been super excited and my friends are literally beside themselves. It's the one show that everyone goes, 'I would love to do that, wouldn't it be a joy?' and then you are the one that gets the chance to do it!"

Small Business Advice – How to survive and thrive in difficult times We know times are tough for small businesses at the moment, so we asked marketing expert Georgina Shaw to share her tips with you on how to get through it and be profitable. She started her marketing agency Shaw Marketing Services during the 2008 financial crisis, enduring five years of poor market conditions, but was able to weather the storm and is still going strong 12 years on. Here are some ways she was able to keep her business afloat and practical advice for all small businesses to follow in her footsteps. “The COVID crisis has businesses fighting for survival and it made me recall our first few years starting out during the terrible recession in 2008. Thinking back to those times makes me feel confident that even though times are hard, it is possible to survive and even thrive now, as it was back then. We thought it would be useful for other companies if we identify the key reasons why we did make it through, so you can do the same with your business right now. 1. We reduced risk Before we started the business we did our research, identified a gap in the market and asked for help from professionals and fellow business people to make sure we were creating a business that was in demand. Then we looked at how we could do things in the most low-

cost way possible, so we chose networking ahead of conventional advertising, swapped skills with other professionals and tried to do what we could ourselves. We didn’t move into a flashy office or spend loads of money in the first instance, we relied on building a network, helping others, doing free jobs for charities and slowly building a name for ourselves. This lean approach kept our head above water when clients were thin on the ground and is serving us well now too.

throughout the pandemic. 4. We kept reviewing and analysing what was working and what wasn’t It’s important to keep on top of what’s happening in the market and also what’s happening in your business, to make sure you are being profitable and maximising on opportunities. There were a few times when we were busy but not making enough money. When that

2. We made a plan We created a plan with clear objectives and the steps we needed to take to achieve those objectives. We aimed for growth and planned on how we would deal with that growth. Key to this, was making contacts and partners that we could turn to when work came in, without paying salaries year-round. 3. We built a good website We knew that having an online presence was vital for attracting the few new businesses opening up in 2008 and 2009, so we invested in a website and social media channels and online advertising to ensure we could be found when people searched for our key terms. This has always been one of the biggest sources of new business for us and continues to generate leads even

happened, we had to review how we were working so we had more potential for profit. Work smart so you can optimise your hourly rate, crucial for solopreneurs or small teams. 5. We always offered marketing in English and Spanish Although it isn’t easy, we have always committed to be a bilingual agency, providing marketing in English and

Spanish for companies all along the Costas. Being a bilingual agency increases our potential client base and what we can offer our clients too. 6. We were open to new opportunities Right from the beginning we were looking for new opportunities. When a client couldn’t afford marketing with us, but was looking for English classes, Georgina stepped in and taught the class. When people didn’t have the budget for marketing, we started offering training to help people do it for themselves, while still generating income. They key is not to be afraid of change – it is inevitable and can be great. Tough times call for innovation, flexibility and grabbing scarce opportunities with both hands. 7. We stayed motivated Motivation is tough when you have your own business and let’s be honest, some days you just can’t be bothered. However, we have always had established working hours which we always follow, plus a dedicated work space to do the tasks in. We are planners and love lists, so every day we have clear tasks to achieve and tick them off the list for a sense of satisfaction. Even when it was quiet, we’d set deadlines for ourselves to keep us on track and also

reward ourselves when we’ve achieved a lot. There needs to be a payoff after all the challenges of working for yourself!! If we can do it, so can you! Believe in yourself, be positive, set realistic objectives and work to them in a planned and practical way and you can achieve a great deal even in difficult times like these.”

Georgina Shaw is the Founder and Director of Shaw Marketing Services, a full-service Marketing and PR agency supporting companies to communicate better, be more visible and attract more customers. She also offers marketing training sessions online to help entrepreneurs obtain the skills they need to market themselves and be more successful. Find out more at www.shawmarketingservices.com

Woman wants €10k from gay ex A woman is demanding a sum of 10,000 euro from her ex-husband, claiming he hid his homosexuality from her. A court in Valencia is currently looking into the lawsuit filed by a woman against her exhusband in which she demands the annulment of her marriage and financial compensation, considering that the man "deliberately" hid from her that he was homosexual. The man in question considers himself bisexual and expressed his regret that these

situations that "penalize and criminalize sexual orientations" still exist in Spain. He has demanded a change in civil legislation to ensure that this does not happen again. The case began when the plaintiff decided to initiate a civil case to obtain the annulment of her marriage and compensation of 10,000 euros from her ex-husband, from whom she has been divorced for ten years. According to the lawsuit cited by El País, the woman

made the decision after two mutual friends assured her that they had known about the man’s alleged homosexuality since childhood and that he had already had a relationship with a man in his youth. The plaintiff added that had she known the man was gay, she would not have consented to marry him and believes that he concealed his sexual orientation from her "deliberately". The man however claims he married "totally for love”, that he has had a "full"

heterosexual life and that, despite belonging to a generation "that has had no references", he has since been able to develop a “fluid sexuality”. He hopes that by making his case visible, he will encourage political groups to promote a legislative initiative that modifies article 73 of the Civil Code, regarding sexuality. According to the man’s lawyer Javier Molpeceres, the change must begin with an in-depth study of the current

law, since where the Civil Code establishes the reasons to annul a marriage, homosexuality appears in a list next to pathologies. The man at the centre of the case says, "People do not have to be judged for their sexual orientation,” adding that if someone has had to pretend in this country (which has not been the case for him he claims) it is because there is "social and religious pressure and discriminatory legislation."

Bake off cook book The Great British Bake Off sees a group of amateur bakers compete against each other in a series of rounds, attempting to impress a group of judges with their baking skills. One contestant is eliminated in each round, and the winner is selected from the contestants who reach the finals. The first episode was aired on 17 August 2010, with its first four series broadcast on BBC Two, until its growing popularity led the BBC to move it to BBC One for the next three series. Since its launch the series has become a ´must watch’ for millions of people round the world and is currently in full swing. So now is the perfect time to get baking in your own kitchen too! Luckily for you, the team behind Channel 4's hit reality competition have released a collection of the best recipes from the show, with cakes to fit all levels of bakers. The Big Book of Amazing Cakes features everything from "simple sponges to spectacular

celebration cakes", so you can enjoy each Bake Off Tuesday with a treat of your own. And right now, The Big Book of Amazing Cakes is on sale for 24 percent off the list price via Amazon UK, available for just £15.19. The current season of Bake Off has already kicked off in controversial fashion, with the infamous #CakeGate disaster in

Week 1 and a divisive elimination the following week. And during Bread Week, there was as much innuendo about sausages as there was bread-making chatter. This series was produced with unprecedented social distancing conditions, as the production team, presenters, judges and bakers made the "mammoth sacrifice" to isolate for the entire length of the series. "It was a massive operation, we even [built] 12 practice kitchens for the bakers to use on their days off," producer Kieran Smith told Broadcast, with Letty Kavanagh adding, "It felt like the safest place in Britain." Even with extreme precautions, Smith confirmed that a COVID-19 scare on set nearly shut down production until the person tested negative for the virus. The Great British Bake Off airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4. In the US, it's known as The Great British Baking Show, with new episodes debuting every Friday on Netflix.

Don’t drink coffee New gins for end of before breakfast summer delight Drinking your first coffee of the day before breakfast could be bad for you, researchers have warned. A new study found a strong black coffee after a bad night of sleep could impair control of blood sugar levels. Experts say the best way to avoid the problem is to eat first and then drink coffee if you feel you still need it. Researchers from the University of Bath examined the effect of broken sleep and morning coffee across a range of metabolic markets. Their work, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, shows that one night of poor sleep had a limited impact on metabolism, but drinking coffee could have a negative effect on blood glucose control. Professor James Betts, codirector of the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism at the University of Bath, said: "We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee - intuitively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee. "This study is important and has far-reaching health

implications as up until now we have had limited knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in particular for our metabolic and blood sugar control. "Put simply, our blood sugar control is impaired when the first thing our bodies come into contact with is coffee, especially

after a night of disrupted sleep. "We might improve this by eating first and then drinking coffee later if we feel we still need it. Knowing this can have important health benefits for us all." Harry Smith, who led the study, added: “Individuals should try to balance the potential stimulating benefits of caffeinated coffee in the morning with the potential for higher blood glucose levels and it may be better to consume coffee following breakfast rather than before."

In the study, 29 healthy men and women underwent three different overnight experiments in a random order. For one, participants had a normal night of sleep and were asked to consume a sugary drink on waking. On another occasion, they experienced a disrupted night of sleep - being woken up for five minutes each hour and were given a sugar drink in the morning. The third test involved participants experiencing the same sleep disruption but being given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink. Blood samples from participants were taken following the glucose drink, which mirrored the calories of a typical breakfast, in each experiment. Results showed that one night of disrupted sleep did not worsen the participants' blood glucose responses at breakfast when compared to a normal night of sleep. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast increased the blood glucose response to the drink by around 50 percent.

If you love discovering new and unusual gin flavours then look no further. Here are some of the best flavoured gin drinks available to buy... Martin Miller’s have created a Winterful gin, which, you guessed it(!), is inspired by the festive period. Paying homage to mulled wine, the recipe includes cinnamon, mandarin orange peel and cardamom, and can be enjoyed hot or cold. Kopparberg is launching a limited-edition Pear Gin, bursting with crispy pear notes and inspired by similar ingredients as their iconic pear cider. Enjoy over ice with tonic or lemonade. Chase Rhubarb and Bramley Apple gin is perfect for anyone who doesn't want to leave summer behind just yet. Silent Pool's new creation, Rare Citrus Gin, is made "using some of the rarest fruits known to man". It promises to be an exceptional high-quality, clear spirit, free of artificial flavourings and unprocessed ingredients, that lends itself perfectly to negronis. Salcombe Gin has teamed up with two-Michelin starred chef Niall Keating to create ‘Restless’, the world’s first gin using kombucha as a liquid botanical.

Sounds interesting! 58Gin's Apple and Hibiscus promises a deliciously smooth and fresh tasting pink gin, made using surplus and wonky Cox’s apples. Malfy Con Arancia is full of Sicilian blood oranges and promises the taste of Italy in a glass. Mix with Mediterranean tonic and an orange wheel for a take on the classic G&T, or with peach puree and Prosecco for something more decadent. Created as part of their Sipping Series, Sipsmith's new Chilli and Lime gin promises to be the perfect zingy spirit with a little added heat. And we can vouch for it being very delicious in a spicy margarita. Gordon's have launched a brand new Mediterranean Orange flavour, which sounds like the gin version of Aperol. Count us in! The gin is packed with notes of fresh orange, complimented by juniper and the refreshing, signature taste of Gordon's original dry gin. Bombay Bramble is a new gin from Bombay Sapphire inspired by a bramble cocktail - a blackberry and raspberry infusion, best served with tonic and a squeeze of lemon. Promises to be bold and punchy in flavour.

You can always rely on Aldi to bring out a flavoured gin we want to get our hands on. This one, named Mystical Unicorn, is a pink and shimmery gin liqueur, which tastes of candy floss and marshmallow. While Hendrick's is known for its cucumber and rose flavoured gin, the brand is mixing it up this spring with its new flavour: Midsummer Solstice. The limited edition gin combines classic flavours with secret floral essences, inspired by summer blooms. Lidl's award-winning Hortus gin now comes in pomegranate and rose flavour. The best way to drink it? "Serve the gin nice and cold in a Champagne flute, topped with Lidl's Italian Asti Spumante, and garnished with a strip of lemon", Lidl's spirit expert said.

He's not interested When I asked my husband if he thought I was looking old, and what did he think about me getting a bit of a facelift, I didn’t get the reaction I was seeking. To be honest I wanted him to say that I didn’t need it, and that I was fine, but instead he asked me to send him more information on it. I never thought I’d want to get any help with my features, but if I have noticed a decline in my looks as I am getting older, then my husband’s response definitely tells me that he has also seen deterioration. I suppose I shouldn’t have gone fishing for compliments, but I just wanted him to find me attractive again. Our love life in middle age is pretty much non-existent. He hasn’t wanted me like that for years, and I can’t help but take it personally. I have kept myself slim, and attractive so I can’t understand why he is not interested anymore. They can’t get enough of us when we are young can they, but then it could be due to a decline in testosterone of course, which is an actual physical change. However, a complete withdrawal of interest in their wife and partner is sad, and a little selfish. We must all make an effort. Your longer letter says that you don’t even get any comments from your husband when you have made an effort to look nice. It could be he doesn’t want to say you look nice, in case you expect anything more from it. Also, your letter told me that another man was showing interest in you, and your husband was not jealous at all, nor stood up and intervened. This is a little worrying. It’s not healthy for a marriage to lack intimacy, so show him my article and see what he has to say.

Aston Martin designs first Lucid Air still not quicker than Telsa residential project US studio S3 Architecture worked with luxury carmaker Aston Martin's architectural design service to create Sylvan Rock, an angular black-cedar home in Hudson Valley, New York. With building works set to start in early 2021, Sylvan Rock by S3 Architecture will be the first property to be fully realised under Aston Martin's Automotive Galleries and Lairs service, which launched last year. The service sees the carmaker team up with architecture practices across the world to design bespoke spaces where its clients can show off their most cherished motors. Sylvan Rock will be situated two hours away from Manhattan, hidden amongst a 55-acre plot of forested land in Hudson Valley that will allow inhabitants to "reconnect with nature". A sweeping driveway that spans 2,000 feet (609 metres) will lead up to the front door of the house. The facade will be composed of expansive panels of glazing and blackened cedar. Its dark metal roof will be faceted to emulate the jagged shape of surrounding rock formations, at one point dramatically dipping down towards to form a covered entryway. "When designing, we always let the land speak first and respond to it," said Christopher Dierig, partner at S3 Architecture. "It's as if the home is born of and launching from the landscape. The

resulting design blends our modernist aesthetic with the privacy and context of the rural location to create a unique luxury experience." Cars will be displayed in a subterranean gallery-style room that's completely enclosed by panels of glass. It will look through to a wine lounge where bottles are kept in floor-to-ceiling latticed shelves that subtly nod to the intersecting lines seen in Aston Martin's logo. At this level there will also be an office where the inhabitants can escape to do work without interruption. It will feature a huge window that offers an up-close glimpse of the craggy rocks outdoors. From here guests can head upstairs to the ground floor where there will be a kitchen, cosy den, dining room, formal sitting area and an array of other shared living spaces that look out across the home's decked pool area and verdant landscape. Aston Martin – which will be responsible for the home's interiors – imagines each room to be finished with parquet flooring and rich chocolatebrown storage cabinetry. Marble-topped tables and plush, leather-trimmed soft furnishings will further enhance the opulent feel of the home. Elevated views across the treetops and towards the nearby Catskill Mountains will be available up in the first-floor master bedroom, which will

cantilever over the house's ground floor. "Our architecture and design team was immediately in sync with the Aston Martin design team, both emphasizing clean lines and the luxury of natural materials and textures," the studio's partner, Doug Maxwell, told Dezeen. "Working with them we evolved our creative process to view the residence in a similar way as designing an Aston Martin car – by designing in 360 degrees, where no specific angle or facade took precedence or dominates. The grounds of Sylvan Rock will additionally accommodate three gabled guest pods that will stagger down a grassy embankment towards a pond. They will enable visiting friends and family to have a sense of privacy when they come to stay but, when not in use, can alternatively serve as a health and fitness space or a quiet area for homeschooling. There will also be a small produce garden where fruit and vegetables can be grown, as well as a pitched-roof treehouse where inhabitants or guests can choose to spend a night under the stars, closer to the site's wildlife. Aston Martin's Automotive Galleries and Lairs service is not the brand’s first venture outside of carmaking. Last year it unveiled its inaugural motorcycle model, AMB 001, which features a 180horsepower turbocharged engine and a carbon-fibre body.

Lucid Motors just announced that one of its Tri-Motor Lucid Air prototype, has set a new “personal best” time at the Laguna Seca Raceway, during chassis tuning and powertrain testing. The new time of 1:31.3 lap time was set right "out-of-the-box", which means that the Air is pretty close to Tesla Model S Plaid's 1:30.3. The video is dated 17th September, 2020. Previous Lucid Air times were 1:33 earlier this year, and 1:41, set at the track in 2018 (by the dual-motor version we guess). "So today in a video the team at Lucid Motors is once again showing its work in the ongoing development of the Lucid Air luxury EV, in this case equipped with a development version of the company’s tri-motor configuration. Right out of the box, the team achieved a lap time of 1:31.3 at California’s iconic Laguna Seca

Raceway." A cool thing is also that the car was driven by John Culliton, a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Lucid Motors, which means that a professional driver potentially could go even faster. The company notes that the Speed Team is exploring the extraordinary potential of Lucid's EV technology and to stay tuned for even better results. "We will continue to “show our work” as the company does the important work of tuning the platform and vehicle systems heading into production for the Lucid Air, which starts in spring of 2021. Meanwhile, work on the tri-motor car will continue in parallel as a development project, and we look forward to sharing more of its achievements in the future." For comparison, Elon Musk said that the Plaid Model S in its final version should be also a few seconds quicker.

Future Roads A team of researchers from the UniversitatPolitècnica de València (UPV), the Centro Universitario de la Defensa de la Universidad de Zaragoza (UNIZAR), and the Tsing-Hua National University (Taiwan) has published a complete study on the latest advances and technological projects that are being carried out around the world. Of all of them would revolutionise the way we get around and the idea we currently have of roads. The roads of the future will be able to create sounds to warn drivers of a danger on the road or if they are speeding; they will turn vehicles into sources of energy to light the street lamps; and they will be able to tell us the weight of a truck or automatically recharge electric vehicles. their signals will have nothing to do with the current ones; There will be smart crossings and they will incorporate advanced sensors and different communication devices that will reduce rescue times in the event of an accident. They will also talk to drivers, who will be notified automatically of their driving violations. Juan Carlos Cano, researcher at the UPV's Computer Networks Group (GRCDISCA) and one of the authors of the study, affirms that roads “are getting smarter. The infrastructures of 30 years ago have nothing to do with the current ones, and they will change a lot over the next few decades. They will be much safer roads thanks to the great advances in telecommunications, 5G and cloud computing, among other technologies.

And, in addition, they will contribute to reducing the environmental impact of vehicles. Some of the roads we present in the study look like science fiction, but they aren't at all. In all of them they are already working somewhere in the world and all of them are technologically viable in our environment”. In their study, the team analysed projects that are being carried out in countries such as China, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Japan, and Spain. In all of them, there is a common denominator: roads are no longer a simple physical infrastructure to transport people or goods, but become a superhighway "with communications and intelligence capabilities unimaginable decades ago", says Professor Chai K. Toh, from the National Tsing Hua University and a member of the Royal British Academy of Sciences. For Toh, considered the father of wireless networks without infrastructure (Mobile Ad Hoc Networks), in 20 years, roads as we know them today will no longer exist, they will cease to be completely passive

elements to become active. "They will begin to transform into smart roads", highlights Toh,"with smart streetlights, smart intersections, wireless traffic signals that will provide information to drivers and will have automatic accident detection systems, as well as rapid emergency assistance, among other novelties". In the case, for example, of musical roads, in Japan there are already more than 30, spread over cities such as Hiroshima, Shizuoka, Oita, Gunman or Hokkaido. In the latter, engineers from the city's Industrial Research Institute designed a project in which vehicles are turned into tuning forks. “They do it using resonance devices spread over the road surface. As the vehicles roll over them,

they generate high or low notes and, in turn, music,”explains Toh. “Also”, he adds, “they exist in South Korea, where these musical highways warn drivers, generating chords of a popular song. Likewise, in Taiwan, on the Dinglin Road in Kinmen, cars traveling at 50 km / h generate a melody of El Olivo. And in New Mexico, on historic Route 66 between Albuquerque and Tijeras, drivers can hear the song America the Beautiful when they hit 45 miles per hour (72.4 km / h).” They are not the only advances already visible. Freight roads, capable of supplying energy to vehicles, are also a reality in countries such as South Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Along with all this, there are more and

more devices that allow motorways to be connected to vehicles thanks to technologies such as V2X, V2V or VANET, which warn of road hazards, accidents, traffic congestion, and even detect potentially dangerous drivers. In the field of health and safety, technology can help reduce response times in the event of an emergency, as well as increase reliability in manoeuvres such as overtaking. Indeed, one of the latest developments by the UPV team is a new application that offers the driver greater safety when overtaking a truck – or another vehicle larger than their own. “Installed on mobile phones”, Cano indicates, “with the rear camera oriented towards the windshield and the screen towards the driver, a video is automatically transmitted, captured by the vehicle in front, to the vehicle behind, where the most traffic is shown. ahead so that, in this way, the driver can decide if it is safe to overtake”. The UPV researcher also points out that the combination of information and communications, together with the development of autonomous vehicles both cars and drones-, already allow, and will do so even more in the future, to dynamically and efficiently manage the traffic, which will also result in greater security. "In addition", concludes Cano, "the drones will be able to warn of incidents such as accidents, collapses or speed bumps, to the approaching vehicles, thus also improving the safety of the driver and passengers.

Car of the Year named The electric Porsche Taycan, Vauxhall Corsa-e and Volkswagen Golf have scooped top honours at the a UK motor industry awards Judged by the readers and motoring experts of publications like The Sunday Times and The Sun, the awards are now in their third year and aim to give awards to models from across the motoring spectrum. Motoring guru Jeremy Clarkson also picked winners, too.

And in 2020, it was the new Volkswagen Golf hatchback and Porsche Taycan that scooped The Sunday Times’ Car of the Year awards, meanwhile The Sun awarded the new Vauxhall Corsa-e EV its Car of the Year gong. Rob Gill, Motors Editor at The Sun, said: “We love the Corsa in Britain but you’ll love the electric Corsa-e even more. It is a gem of a car. Fun, easy, smart and guilt-free with a real-world

range to suit most people. “It looks no different to a normal Corsa but it won’t stain your conscience or the lungs of little ones. This is the right car at the right time and a worthy winner of The Sun Car of the Year 2020.” Elsewhere in the awards, Jeremy Clarkson awarded the Jaguar E-Typebased Eagle Lightweight GT his Supercar of the Year, while the new Mini John Cooper Works GP hot hatch was his ‘People’s Car of the Year’.

Mercedes to go electric Mercedes has announced that six new EVs will join its range in the next few years as the firm gears up its electric offensive. The models, which will all wear the ‘EQ’ nameplate that Mercedes reserves for its EVs and plug-in hybrids, will join the EQC SUV and EQV, which are both already available. Heading up the new Mercedes electric range will be the EQS, which will be available as both a saloon and SUV. Set to offer a similar footprint and levels of luxury to the brand’s flagship S-Class, the EQS will be the first Mercedes EV to sit on a dedicated electric platform, rather than an existing one. It’s set to offer bold styling and impressive levels of spaciousness thanks to the bespoke platform, and will offer a range of up 435 miles, which is longer than any other electric car on sale today. The EQS will arrive in 2021 and is currently undergoing final testing across the world.

Christoph Starzynski, vice president of electric vehicles at MercedesBenz, said: “The EQS has already piled up far more than two million test kilometres from the heat of South Africa to the cold of Northern Sweden. “The EQS will be the S-Class of electric vehicles. That is why it is undergoing the same demanding development program as any other vehicle that has the privilege of proudly bearing the three-pointed star. In addition, there were quite a few tests specifically for electric cars that cover important development priorities such as range, charging and efficiency”.

As part of its announcement, Mercedes has also confirmed the new EQE, which will be available as a saloon and SUV, and will use the same underpinnings as the EQS. Due to be unveiled later this year is the EQA, which will become the most affordable electric Mercedes. It’s based on the brand’s GLA crossover and will likely offer sub-£40,000 pricing. It will be followed by the EQB, an electric version of the new GLB crossover.

Shopping habits changing in Spain Typical diets in Spain are becoming more healthy – at least, if supermarket shopping trends are anything to go by. Kantar Worldpanel's research, carried out for German chain Aldi, found that consumers in Spain are tending to buy more fruit and vegetables, less meat, and although they do not go grocery shopping so often, are spending and buying more on their less-frequent trips. The gradual leaning towards vegetables and fruit and away from meat, and larger shops more spaced apart, was seen over the first six months of this year compared with consumer habits in the last few years, but is unlikely to be entirely due to lockdown, since a follow-up study has seen a similar tendency over July, August and September. According to Aldi's research and analytics director Ignacio Cid, purchases of fresh produce rose by 9 percent between January and June inclusive. Compared with the same period in 2019, the fresh produce which shifted the fastest was eggs, with sales of these shooting up by 23 percent, followed by vegetables, with 18 percent more sold, and

fruit, increasing by 12 percent. Overall, in the last five years, fruit and vegetable consumption has risen by 7 percent and 13 percent respectively, according to the study. Protein from animal sources – fresh meat, sausages, cheese, fresh fish and seafood – went down in that time by 2.5 percent. Whilst these trends were already gaining ground slowly since 2015, lockdown was what accelerated the change in habits – and also the amount spent per shop. A combination of fresh produce, fruit and vegetables costing more than processed foodstuffs, together with eating at home rather than in restaurants, means the average household now spends €2,069 a year on fresh goods, compared with €1,921 a year in 2019. The study also found consumption of fresh produce increased with age: Two-thirds of these goods are bought by shoppers aged 50 and over. For the over-65s, just over half – 51 percent - of their food shopping bill involved fresh produce, compared with 38 percent of the amount spent in the case of the

under-35s. The latter group spent more on fresh meat than shoppers aged 35 and over. Meat continues to account for the highest expenditure in terms of fresh goods – 26 percent of the total – followed by fruit, at 18 percent, and vegetables, at 16 percent. Aldi was also keen to see when the most fresh produce was consumed – lunchtimes and evening dinners, naturally, accounted for the largest amounts eaten, and made up three in four of these meals, although a small but significant increase was seen in consumption of fresh foodstuffs for breakfast, from 14 percent in 2018 to 17 percent in 2019. Ignacio Cid says this seems to be in line with the trend, seen across Europe, in eating more fruit in general. In the last decade, fresh produce bought in supermarkets and hypermarkets in Spain has gone up by 11 percentage points, from 50 percent in 2010 to 61 percent in 2019, but fewer shopping trips are now made – as at the third quarter of 2020, the average consumer went grocery shopping 30 times a year fewer than in 2010.

More than 5.2 million Spaniards now restricted The rising number of coronavirus cases in Spain is accelerating the introduction of new confinements across the country. For now, the restrictions being introduced are not as severe as they were during the first wave, when the central government implemented a state of alarm that saw Spaniards confined to their homes for several months. But partial lockdowns are being established where the transmission rate of the virus is on the rise. Currently, more than 5.2 million Spaniards – 4.7 million of them in the Madrid region – are not allowed to leave their municipalities, apart from going to work, to school or to university, among other reasons. The latest areas to implement such measures are the municipalities of León, Palencia and San Andrés de Rabanedo, in Castilla y León, and La Almunia de Doña Godina in Aragón. Experts warn that while ‘perimetral’ confinements are necessary when transmission is rising, they are insufficient if not accompanied by social limitations within the zone that

has been locked down. Ahead of the upcoming annual Fiestas del Pilar in Zaragoza, celebrating the patron saint, the regional government of Aragón has taken the city back to Phase 2 of the country’s de-escalation plan, which sees limits on capacity and assembly. It has done so with a cumulative incidence of 300 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last two weeks. It has done the same in Huesca, a city where the cumulative incidence is at 700, as well as in the municipality of La Almunia de Doña Godina, which has a very high rate of 1,000 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. Experts warn, however, that if an extreme lockdown similar to that of March is not introduced in a bid to flatten the curve, these perimetral confinements will become a regular occurrence. “We are facing a constant cycle of shutting down, opening, closing, and opening,” explains Joaquín LópezContreras, the head of Infectious Diseases at the Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona. “Coping with a lockdown like the one in March

is very difficult. Let’s see if lesser measures will see the epidemic squeeze us but not smother us.” But, the experts add, a perimetral closure will not be enough. “Confining residents to a perimeter is done so that cases are not exported, but you also have to limit where contagion can happen to stop the spread,” says Joan Ramon Villalbi, a member of the Spanish Public Health and Health Administration Society. “Perhaps we have been relatively lax with social meetings.” There is, however, no single approach to combat the virus. And even less so while efforts are being made to protect the country’s economy as much as possible. Whatever happens, LópezContreras adds, the figures from June, when infections were at an all-time low and the state of alarm came to an end, will not be repeated unless there is another radical lockdown or the population of Spain completely changes its behavior. “We’ll be like we are now,” he says. “With figures that are threatening, but we will be resisting.”

Las Ramblas Golf Society Monday’s ‘Counter Game’ was the version where it was only after the hole had been played did you find out how many scores out of the four were to count. In first place, coming in with 96 points, were Reg Akehurst, Ian Moir, Terry Field and Pete Dunn. The Silver, with 94, was claimed by Petina Murray, AnneMarie Weisheit, Friedel Kneble and Mike Mahony. On Wednesday It was round 4 (of 6) to decide this year’s individual Stableford champion. Giving heroverall score a big boost in the Lady’s section Liz Robertson took the day with 40 points. In the men’s competition it was Trevor Pullyblank, with 39 points, who just edged out Pete Dunn on countback. Two ‘2’s today going to Lindsay Forbes and Mark Western. Friday’s ‘Change Partners’ saw our favourites duly oblige as Terry Field, Mark Western, John Dobson and Petina Murray took the day with 86 points. In contention for most of the game but just falling short, with 83, it was Benedicte Kruse, Nigel Price and Ken & Liz Robertson.

Busters Golf Society Alto Real Trophy and Captains day This month saw us at Alto Real golf course when we played for our Alto Real trophy alongside our first ever Captains day, a group of seventeen members were made welcome at the course by Antonio and his staff, our buggies had been left ready and waiting outside the reception holding the usual complimentary water, after having a coffee, a catch-up, and a pre game photoshoot we were ready to go. The course and greens were in very good condition, just waiting for us to tee off, the weather remained good encouraging us all to enjoy the course and hopefully play well. Following the game, we headed back to Bar El Toro in Calle Vigo, Quesada for the presentation. Our annual Alto Real Trophy is a copy of the Claret Jug as played for in the British Open, and there is always plenty of enthusiasm in this competition, the Trophy has always been played for in April but had to be delayed this year due to the dreaded Covid19 causing all courses to be closed. This October gave us a double whammy

Torrevieja sailors new champions of Spain Alejandro Pareja and Inés Alcañiz have brought the championship sailing title back to Club Náutico de Torrevieja with a triumphant win this weekend. Pareja has added to his incredible record in the European class. The Torrevieja youngster managed to win the title Champion of Spain, at a regatta held at Ibiza Yacht Club from Thursday to Monday with 35 sailors competing for the title. As well as Pareja’s success, the club was also delighted to reveal a new title, women’s under 18 Champion of Spain which was awarded to Inés Alcañiz, achieving fourth place in the overall category. The participation of young Alberto Antón Escudero, who came third in SUB18, also stood out. Four intense competition days were marked by high winds but the club was delighted with the success of its young sailors and once again, thrilled that such important sporting titles are awarded to Torrevieja, putting Club Náutico de Torrevieja on the map once more.

with our Captain's day prizes being played for in conjunction with the Trophy. Onto our results, our NTP s being won by on the first and the seventeenth by Peter List, the eighth hole was taken by Ian Allison, nobody hit hole ten in one all NTP s received a sleeve of Srixon golf balls, the BF9 with nineteen points was won by Ian Allison, with Rob Ashman taking the BB9 scoring fifteen points both received bottles of red wine, we had three members scoring thirty-six points, which was our top score, so a count-back was necessary, in third place and taking home a bottle of red wine was Allan Collis, Terry Sharley took second place receiving red and white

wines but our winner on the day, taking home the Claret Jug, a Captain's Trophy, and winning bottles of Vodka and Bacardi was John Rush, our soccer card being won by Mick Cave who selected Leeds, I have to say well done to all our winners and a big thank you to our members for making this day special. On the day a draw had been made for several prizes which were given by Martin Collins our Captain to members not winning prizes on the day. SMGS at El Valle A very good turnout for Micky Roscoe’s first SMGS golf day as Captain. The Society’s new season got underway with 34 members and 6 guests making their way to one of the more liked Nicklaus courses in the area. Liked, that is, by the lower handicappers. High handicappers once again had a bit of a mare on a course where pampas grass dominates the scenery, golf, searching time and frustration. The mere appearance of it in front of tees is enough to make legs wobble, swings shorten and speed up, and a sense of points being lost to immediately enter the psyche. It also causes play to slow down, although saying that, most groups were round in four and a half hours. Not bad for SMGS. As we are again playing the course in two weeks´ time it was determined by the Committee to celebrate Mick’s captaincy start with a two game eclectic, whilst retaining prizes on each individual day for the first three in each of 3 categories. There will be a lot of players who can vastly improve on their scoring on October 21st! Only 10 members made 30 points or more, and in Bronze Category (higher handicappers) 25 points was (somewhat embarrassingly felt the prize winner, and others) enough to take 3rd spot whilst finishing 20th overall. As well as the pampas grass, some difficult

pin positions, a fairly strong wind, the propensity of bunkers, generally raised greens, and scouring of greens meaning perceived breaks didn’t occur, led to the scoring havoc. We´ll see how many of the day’s players return to the course for round two of the eclectic in a couple of weeks! However, there is always somebody who shines, and all the adversities mentioned did not stop Kev Albright from burning the course up and being the one person to beat their handicap. An excellent 40 points was well ahead of the rest, Carmel McCann coming in second overall with 35 points. Kev has form at El Valle, having also won his division there back in October the previous year. Special mentions too for Carmel’s husband Richard and Ivan Hanak, both of whom clearly wished to impress their playing partner wives in the same fourball by taking the nearest the pins on holes 6 and 9.
