Hundreds protest hospital reversal See Main Advert on page 30-31

Hundreds of residents of Torrevieja engaged in a seated protest rally to demand that the government stops the reversal of the Hospital from private to public management. Lo que funciona no se toca – what works, do not touch, or ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ was the main argument

chanted by over 400 attendees on Saturday. The event was a call to action meeting arranged by the group, Plataforma Sanidad Excelente (Excellent Health Platform) as a protest to the reversal of the management of Torrevieja hospital, currently publicly owned but privately managed by Ribera Salud. Torrevieja health department attends patients in ten towns along the coast and inland of the Vega Baja. It is estimated that there are 155,000 users from Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Pilar de la Horadada, Rojales and Guardamar. The Valencian Government announced

on Wednesday that it will end Ribera Salud’s 15 year contract to manage the hospital. Ribera Salud had, in recent months, expressed its desire to extend the contract for a further five years but Continued on page 3

Embassy clears Brexit transition confusion There are still many rumours around that green residency certificates must be exchanged for the TIE by 31st December. Please be assured that this is NOT the case. While the Spanish Government has highlighted that there may be some advantages to having the TIE – it is more durable, contains biometric data and may speed up administrative processes and border crossing – they also make it clear that the green certificate remains valid evidence of your residency status and rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, even after the end of the Transition Period.

Orihuela opposition says too little too late The PSOE socialist group of Orihuela they have lamented the situation of the city of Orihuela with respect to the increase of coronavirus cases. Despite the closure of parks and the delay in the return of school activities, the increase in cases in Orihuela has been remarkable in recent days, so much so that the city and districts have imposed more restrictive measures to reduce the spread of the virus in the city. A PSOE spokesman said: “We are concerned about exceeding the threshold of 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants set a few days ago by the Minister of Health. It is clear that the Orihuela government has lacked foresight, work and organisation to make the population aware of the importance of complying with security measures to avoid contagion.” The Socialists recalled that more than two months ago all the groups with representation in the City Council approved the PSOE's proposal to raise

awareness among citizens about the Pandemic. However, the opposition party believes that after several months, absolutely nothing has been done. The party also condemned what it referred to as ‘situations like last weekend in Orihuela Costa’ where hundreds of people flocked to see local entertainers at Villamartin Plaza, where it feels ‘there has been no reaction in the health or local authorities nor measures to ensure people act responsibly’. “In this situation of outbreaks and contagions, social, work and leisure that are taking place, the mayor should have appeared to clarify and reinforce the message of caution, the PSOE added. “From this Municipal Group we call on Citizens to act with care and knowledge, and know that at this time they are the main players to prevent outbreaks and spread of the pandemic. Together and being responsible we can get out of this pandemic.”

Ask the Mayor Do you live in Torrevieja? Do you have a question about the town? Perhaps you have a great idea, or are concerned about something, or you need to find out how you go about a certain administrative process? The Costa Blanca People has established a new link with the town hall in order to ensure that all citizens’ questions are passed directly to the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón. We have had a huge response and the Mayor’s office is working through all the questions received to date by email and Facebook. Below are some answers to reader questions with more to follow in next week’s edition. John Wardle asks the Mayor: “What is happening with the issuing of Padrón in the Town Hall? We have been trying since July 6th in order to get our residencia! No appointments... had to go to Rojales to get a digital signature ... applied on line and still waiting from early September... if you go to Orihuela Costa you can get the Padron same day! Frustrating!” The Mayor replies, “John, I understand your frustration and I share it, believe me that our wish is for the situation to improve and that we will be able to expedite the desired steps shortly. Electronic administration was necessary and vital for a city with a large population like ours. However, we put at your disposal and to all those who wish and urgently need such a process, the International Residents Office, located in Plaza Capdepont S / N to resolve and expedite any situation of this type. Thank you.” Peter Little asks the Mayor, “Firstly, What is going to happen to the beautiful ruined house opposite the Hotel Montse at Los Balcones. I understand it is now owned by Torrevieja council. Secondly, The Torrevieja hospital is now a university hospital. How about a University of Torrevieja? It would help to increase the prosperity of the city, and add to its culture.”

Eduardo Dolón

The Mayor replies, “Thanks for getting in touch Peter, Firstly, that property at this time is not municipal. We are going to put the means within our reach so that the building can be maintained, urging the owners to fulfil their duty of conservation and maintenance. To answer your second question, for months we have been working on the arrival of the first university degrees to the city, we hope to achieve it very soon since there is another mutual arrangement between the university and the city council.” Carol Howman asks the Mayor, “Hello, could you ask the mayor why it's so hard to get a padron appointment. Also why is Alicante the only place we can get our TIE.” The Mayor replies, “Hello Carol, As you know, we have launched the Electronic Administration, which means that we have to reorganize the entire work system to improve and adapt the procedures, which I am sure will be much more flexible in the near future, as I said in a previous question, we put at your disposal the International Residents Office (Plaza Capdepont S/N) to help you, explain and facilitate the procedures you need. Regarding appointments in Alicante about TIE, I know that they also suffer collapse due to the numerous lawsuits and being the most important immigration office in the province.” Duncan Bowen asks, “Dear Mr Mayor, Whilst I appreciate these are

unprecedented times for all, I wish to understand why we as parents of young children, mine personally are 9 & 12 years, are unable to provide moral, emotional and practical support to our children. We are told by the authorities we cannot enter to support our children whilst they compete in three federated in-line hockey league matches on the weekend because of the fear of contagion in an enclosed space, yet, we can take those same children and sit in a municipally run theatre and watch a concert. The difference, as I see it, is purely financial, and the fact that to enter the concert we pay yet entrance to the sports centre is free. Please look at the situation and enact a plan to enable parents to support their children, there will likely be no more than 30 parents in Pabellon Cecilio Gallego that has the capacity to seat 850, you cannot cite social distancing as an issue, masks are mandatory therefore this cannot be cited as a reason, and hand sanitizer is available in all locations so not a valid argument either. We as a family also own infrared non contact thermometer which we would be more than happy to make available for use if it helps enable access.” The Mayor replies, “Duncan, I fully understand your request, being myself the father of two children, I know the importance of support and the need at those ages to have parents. To tell you that the Sports Council is working to establish a safety plan at a general level and for all sports, you will understand that due to the size of our facilities it is necessary that this plan is adequate for the safety of both children and parents. However, I want to announce that in a few days entry to the public will be facilitated for all competitions with the restriction plan completed.” Send your questions or comments to the editor, aoife@costablancapeople.com

Continued from page 1 the regional administration refused. The Sanidad Excelente Platform says that under Ribera Salud, the quality of care at Torrevieja Hospital is well above the average compared with other regional health areas in terms of surgical waiting lists, appointments with specialists and overall user satisfaction. The association also states that its position is not in defence of the private management company itself, but rather the continuity of a model that the Generalitat has decided to "liquidate" "in the middle of a pandemic. It also

highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the conditions of 1,400 workers who, to date have been given scant information about what will happen to their jobs. The host of the event, Jorge Esteve, insisted that the sit down protest was not a political event - no public office or political party was represented on the stage although a number of parties were present in the audience. At the event, staged in the main square with socially distanced seating, a number of sports groups, clubs and charities spoke in support of Ribera Salud and its support of their work. Two GPs also spoke about their experience working in the health

department and the effectiveness of the current system. The protest ceremony was also attended by the manager of the University Hospital, Eva Baró, and the CEO of Ribera Salud, Alberto de Rosa. The measures against Covid-19 forced organisers to limit the capacity of chairs that could fit in Plaza de la Constitución. Access to the event was controlled with temperature measurement. Even so, the event was classified as largest protest gathering in the region since the state of alarm was lifted. A significant number of attendees waited outside the fenced area of the square, guarded by Civil Protection.

Studio32 back in action STUDIO32 Musical Theatre company is pleased to announce that they will soon be resuming rehearsals for South Pacific. As with other theatre groups the restrictions placed due to the coronavirus have hit hard. However, there is now light at the end of the tunnel and organisers are planning to put the show on in March 2021. The company was set up in 2013 with the aim of bringing high quality musical theatre to the area. STUDIO32 started with small beginnings but big hopes, and over the years have staged many large scale musicals - “Oklahoma!”, “Fiddler On The Roof”, “Mack and Mabel”, “Chicago” and “Anything Goes” are amongst their big shows. A spokesperson said, “We are very proud of the fact that, to date, we have raised over €35,000 which has gone to

help local Alzheimer support, homeless people, the local music school in San Fulgencio, and more recently the Red Cross for their tremendous work in helping people affected by the floods in Spain last year.” “All things being equal we should start full rehearsals in January 2021 and we would welcome new members to join our company. So if you have had a yearning to act, sing, dance or help out backstage, why not contact us at info@studiothirtytwo.org . We rehearse at Casa Ventura, San Luis - usually on Wednesdays and Sundays although currently our rehearsals are limited due to COVID restrictions. That said we are positive of a bright future, and look forward to more normality in the new year.” For more information visit the website www.studiothirtytwo.org

Owners damn nightlife closures

The nightlife employers' association for the province of Alicante estimates that, in just two months, businesses have lost at least seven million euros. This is a direct consequence of the forced closure of pubs, nightclubs, discos and karaoke bars ordered by the Generalitat on 17August and now renewed for the third time. Owners fear that this will continue well beyond the New Year, and speak of Easter, in the best of scenarios. However, tired of being heralded as the main causes of the spread of the coronavirus, the owners of the

establishments closed by the Consell are individually starting judicial action to claim damages from the Government for what they believe is ‘a totally random order that does not respond to any scientific study and that is not supported by objective and contrasted data’. Employers are obliged to scrupulously comply with the payment of municipal taxes, business licenses, a proportional part of the social security of their workers and, in many cases, the rental of premises. And all this despite the fact that they have been forced to close.

ERTEs hardly ease the tax burden, and ICO loans are just that, advance money that they will have to pay back – and all without having a way to generate income. The sector, which employs 10,000 professionals and is made up of nearly 1,800 companies that are responsible for almost 2 percent of the regional GDP, estimates that 25 percent of the establishments have already gone bankrupt and that a third of those that still survive barely with the savings it will not reopen its doors when the Generalitat's ban is lifted.

Six more difficult months ahead Spain’s Health Minister Salvador Illa has said that coronavirus confinements in the coming months will be “drastic but short,” as is already happening across Europe during this second wave of the health crisis. As for the Christmas season, the Socialist Party (PSOE) politician said that it “would not be normal, it will be different and with distance” compared to other years. Speaking during an interview with the RAC1 radio station, Illa also pledged that a coronavirus vaccine would be ready by the start of 2021, adding that it would still take some time until the population was vaccinated and the pandemic could be considered over. “There are between five and six complicated months left for us to go,” he said, during which time Spaniards will have to continue to live with a highly contagious virus that can cause a lot of complications, he warned. Illa also analysed the restrictions that were introduced today in Catalonia, with bars and restaurants being forced to close

for a two-week period in a bid to halt the spread of the virus. “It’s much better to act ahead of time and drastically than to wait until cases start to rise,” he said. “This won’t be solved in 15 days in Catalonia, in Spain or in Europe,” he warned. “The

situation is worrying, we must take precautions and we must take this seriously,” he insisted. The Minister also ruled out another full lockdown, one that would see Spaniards confined to their homes as they were between March and June of this year. “It is not necessary to go that

far,” he said. “We have already addressed other outbreaks,” he added, saying that “in the coming weeks and months surgical measures” will be needed in order to react to a changeable epidemiological situation. By next summer, Illa continued, the situation will be “much more normal than the current one,” adding that a vaccine could still come “as a Christmas gift.” One of the vaccine contracts, he explained, includes three million doses for Spain. Several months will be needed to distribute the vaccine, Illa explained, something that will be done in a “fair and proportional” manner among Spain’s regions. A group of experts is working to determine how a mass vaccination program will be carried out, he added. The minister also called for “a very belligerent approach to deniers and anti-vaxxers. Vaccinations save lives. They will have to be given to whoever the scientists say: those who are more at risk or those who are in contact with those who are at risk.”

Spain creates traffic light lockdown system The Spanish government has created a tiered red, yellow, green system to identify at what level regions are at risk from coronavirus. Based upon a 'traffic light' system, red or 'extreme' covers Aragón, the Greater Madrid region, La Rioja, Castilla y León, and the Spanish-owned enclave of Ceuta on the northern African coast, directly across the Strait of Gibraltar. Orange or 'high risk' includes the latter's neighbour Melilla – closer to the Algerian border – Navarra, the Basque Country, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalunya and, for the moment, the Murcia Region. Whilst only two regions are on green, or 'low risk' – Galicia and Cantabria – at least half the Canary Islands is expected to be moved onto this level in the next few days and will also form part of the European Union's 'green' countries on its 'safe travel' map. And yellow, meaning 'medium' risk – or third-lowest out of four categories – covers land-locked western Extremadura and also the rest of Spain's coastal regions: The Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Comunidad Valenciana (which includes the provinces of Alicante), southern Andalucía, and northern Asturias. No 'blanket' national lockdown is expected in the near future, it would

not make sense to confine areas with no or hardly any cases just because other zones are badly affected, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stressed that any form of movement restriction should be a 'last resort' due to the potential long-term harm it could cause to local and national economies and psychologically for residents. For this reason, Spain and other national governments are seeking very localised solutions.

demographic who would be in greater danger if they caught the virus. Other criteria used for safety measures will include the level of repeat contagion – those who have recovered from Covid-19 and caught it again – the number, trend and speed of change in cases diagnosed in the last week or fortnight, the proportion of cases associated with an 'outbreak', defined as where a cluster of people all become infected at once from the same source, and the existence of 'hotspots'. Nationwide, groups meeting in public or in private homes are limited to 10 and smoking in public places is not allowed unless a distance of at least two metres is maintained between the smoker and the nearest other person, even if that other person also has a cigarette or lives with the smoker.

On Spanish soil, the criteria are based not just upon the epidemiological situation, but also on the capacity of the health services to respond to, treat and test patients or their contacts, the level of vulnerability of the population, and the ability or otherwise of adopting prevention and control measures. This is one reason why some more rural parts of the country are placed on high-risk or extreme-risk levels, even where contagion rate is not excessive: They are typically home to a much older

Where the region in question is of a higher risk, restrictions are greater – limited to six people in 'red' and 'orange' zones. Whilst shops in high-risk regions are required to reduce their customer numbers on the premises to 25 percent of the total capacity and to close the insides of bars and restaurants, with outside terraces a maximum of 50 percent, 'extreme-risk' regions may be ordered into a temporary shutdown for a few days or weeks if the situation worsens.

Three illegal cigarette factories busted Three illegal cigarette factories were raided by police this week, one of them in Albatera, with the capacity to produce more than 18,000 cigarettes per minute. More than 43 tons of tobacco cut and leaf, 1,443,000 packs, as well as machinery to carry out the complete manufacturing and packaging process have been seized, with up to 14 different brands of counterfeit tobacco having been recorded. Guardia Civil, National Police and the Tax Office worked together to dismantle the three illegal factories located in the provinces of Madrid, Murcia and Alicante, which together had a production capacity of about 18,000 cigarettes per minute. 38 people were arrested during the operation, which saw the dismantling of a sophisticated criminal infrastructure. The gang ran a highly specialized organization with a large logistical capacity that, under the direction of Bulgarian nationals, supplied the national and international black market with up to 14 different brands of counterfeit tobacco. In the same way, 43,160 kilos of tobacco cuttings and 1,443,000 packs of cigarettes were seized, all with an estimated value of more than nine million euro. Police also seized six vehicles, a tractor unit, two truck-trailers and various machinery used to carry out the complete manufacturing and packaging process. Investigators were at work over a number of months and found a series of

clandestine facilities linked to a criminal organization made up mostly of Bulgarian and Ukrainian citizens, several of whom had criminal histories for similar activities. In addition to the three factories, several "security warehouses" were discovered, used for the storage of merchandise and machinery until they were transferred to the production lines. Given the high number of counterfeit brands seized, it is suspected that the organization manufactured to order for both the Spanish and overseas markets, producing brands such as ‘Fortuna’, ‘Wiston’, ‘L&M’ and ‘Chesterfield’, as well as other cigarette brands popular overseas. The police raid in Albatera took place when the organization was about to start production at its factory there. In the warehouse there were two cigarette production lines, fully loaded and ready for work to begin. Workers were inside the factory about to begin for the day when

police burst in. 11 people were arrested 5 Bulgarian, 5 Ukrainian and one Russian. Police confiscated a large quantity of tobacco as well as branded packaging and cardboard containers. The other two factories were fully operational when raided, both with double production lines, one located in the town of Blanca (Murcia), where 14 people were arrested (8 Bulgarians and 6 Ukrainians). Again here, various packs of cigarettes of different brands, chopped tobacco leaf, and various manufacturing and packaging materials were seized. The most significant raid - in terms of production capacity of the illegal factory - was carried out in Villanueva de Perales (Madrid), where another 12 people were arrested, also of Bulgarian and Ukrainian nationalities, and in which a total of 462,533 packs of already manufactured cigarettes were seized. Among these detainees were the alleged leaders of the gang.

Selling a home during a pandemic is new to everyone, but it doesn’t have to feel like you’re trying to sell in a Halloween nightmare! I get asked all the time, “what should we do first?” To start the process go to www.80ThingsReport.com for a list of the 80 things you can’t afford to neglect when selling your home! If your property is currently on the market, or you’re in the process of listing it for sale you can start by checking it’s not you that could be scaring the buyers away! Here are a 4 things to get you started: 1. Too many locks – An excessive amount of locks on the doors sends out the wrong signals. Buyers will think they’re in a high crime area, and will not want to hang around long enough to find out whether it’s true or not! 2. Uncomfortable art – What you think is classy, others may not, and displaying nude photography can be a turn off for some buyers. Yes it’s displayed in the privacy of your home, but remember, when buyers are looking around they are trying to envisage themselves living there.

3. Half done repairs – What you think looks good, someone that doesn’t know you, may not! So you’ve put hard work in making some much needed repairs around the home, but are you a skilled craftsman/woman? I have been in a few “houses of horror” in my time! By getting in a qualified handyman, would soon make these horror houses become “dream homes!” 4. Unfriendly pets – No matter how much you love your beloved fur babies, not everyone feels the same. Some may have had a frightening encounter before, whilst others may have allergies. Either way, you need to keep your pets under control when you have a viewing appointment. This would be a great time to take them for a walk. It’s not for long, but buyers will appreciate your gesture, while giving them time to have a good look around. Spain headed for record deficit Besides leaving one million dead in its wake and changing lifestyles on a global scale, the coronavirus pandemic has also laid waste to the economic projections made by all governments, including that of Spain. In pre-crisis days, the country had been expecting to see a 2020 public deficit of around 1.8 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). A week ago, Finance Minister María Jesús Montero was already discussing a revised deficit of 11.3 percent. However, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has taken that further and estimated Spain’s deficit for 2020 at a record 14.1 percent of GDP. This account imbalance represents around €140 billion, roughly what the government spends on pension payments for Spain’s nine million retirees. The soaring deficit is a result of the new financing needs created by the coronavirus pandemic, which has triggered a crisis on health, social and employment fronts. To this must be added lower tax revenues. Spain will also become the world’s 16th most highly indebted country, according to the IMF, which this week released its revised World Economic Outlook forecast. Compared with last year, when the public debt stood at 95 percent of GDP, in 2020 it is expected to reach 123 percent. This is still below

other countries, such as the United States (131 percent), Italy (161 percent), Greece (205 percent) and Japan (266 percent). The news comes on top of an expected economic contraction of 12.8 percent of GDP this year, the biggest of all advanced economies, according to the IMF. There is no precedent for such figures in modern Spanish history. Economy Minister Nadia Calviño has pledged to reduce the deficit as soon as the Spanish economy begins to grow again. According to the IMF, in 2021 the account imbalance will shrink to 7.5 percent, but this will require significant efforts. The Spanish government has placed fiscal rules on hold for 2020 and 2021, to give regional and local authorities greater leeway to

make spending decisions.

of the Popular Party (PP).

The IMF is not expecting Spain’s deficit to drop below 3.9 percent before 2025 at the earliest. This figure would still be in violation of the European

The EU’s fiscal policy rules have been temporarily placed on hold due to the exceptional situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic: nobody is thinking about cutting costs during a health crisis. But with a public debt expected to be in excess of 118 percent of GDP for the next five years, Spain could be a candidate for cuts when the winds of austerity start to blow again. It will not be alone, however: Portugal’s debt for 2020 is forecast at 137 percent, while France and Belgium both come in at 118 percent.

Union’s Growth and Stability Pact, which stipulates that government deficit should not be more than 3 percent of GDP, while total government debt should not exceed 60 percent of GDP. Ever since Spain experienced the 2008 crisis, the country has only met the 3 percent deficit target once: in 2017, under the government of Mariano Rajoy

Employment Things are not looking better in the job market, which has traditionally been one of the weak points of Spain’s economic structure. The IMF does not think that Spain will return to pre-crisis unemployment levels until 2026. This

year and the next, the jobless rate is expected to be in the range of 16.8 percent. There will be job creation in 2021, but only enough to make up for one out of every five jobs lost this year, according to the international organization. That is to say, fewer than 200,000 positions will be created next year, not enough to cover the estimated one million jobs that will be lost by the end of 2020. The year had started out well enough. After emerging from the previous crisis, which pushed the jobless rate to 26 percent in 2013, the Spanish economy had been reducing that percentage for six straight years to reach 14 percent, a number that would be catastrophic in other countries, but which does not appear quite as bad in Spain, where citizens are used to double-digit figures. The IMF predicts that the Spanish unemployment rate will remain above 14 percent at least until 2025. But the numbers could be even worse, considering that there are 728,000 workers currently on the government’s so-called ERTE furlough scheme who do not count as unemployed. Just like with the GDP contraction, it is difficult to find other developed economies with equally bad unemployment rates. In Europe, only Greece is expected to fare even worse with a rate of 19.9 percent.

Interactive airport guide We have all been in the situation where we are dashing frantically round an airport trying to find check-in, security, restaurants and toilets. However, this will be a thing of the past in Spanish terminals for anyone who has a SmartPhone, laptop or tablet – thanks to a new interactive map created to help you find your way about. National telecommunications giant Telefónica, along with Spain's State-owned airport management company AENA, have jointly devised a system which works along the same lines as Google Maps: Your current location is shown, and you can type in your required destination and be given a route to it, with the 'dot' displaying where you are as you walk along. Although Spanish airports are well signposted anyway – meaning even the biggest international ones, such as Barcelona's El Prat and Madrid's Adolfo Suárez-Barajas, are not too scary for first-time visitors – nobody wants to walk farther than absolutely necessary when dragging a suitcase, when they need to get in a last-minute coffee and sandwich before boarding, or

when nature calls and they have to get to the ladies' or gents' as soon as possible. It also helps to know how long you've

got before you start setting off for crucial points like security and boarding gates – there's nothing more stress-inducing than finding out

your gate number 20 minutes before the flight closes and realising you're a half-hour walk away. AENAmaps helps you calculate how long it will take you to get somewhere, and also shows up everything else along the route – that way, if you find out there's a shop you'd particularly like to pop into on the way to the gates, you can plan to set off earlier. The programme can be accessed via the AENA mobile phone App, compatible with Android and iOS and available for download through the Apple store or Google Playstore or, if your phone is not able to use either of these – as is the case with some older SmartPhone models – you can find it on AENA's website. Telefónica says it is continually developing AENAmaps to widen its user scope, including setting up alternative routes for passengers with mobility problems, or wheelchair-users. The application will shortly be launched for Adolfo SuárezBarajas airport in the capital, and gradually roll out to all other terminals in the country.

Investment Jitters? Investors could be forgiven for being a little on edge. Financial markets have been on a rollercoaster ride this year.

As banks are offering all time low returns, where else can you put your money to get a decent return?

The value of the UK's biggest 100 companies has plunged by a fifth – with sectors such as leisure, tourism and some retail businesses on their knees.

Part of the stress of investing can be watching financial markets swinging this way and that – and trying to work out how to react.

There are likely to be more stomach-lurching moments ahead as we hurtle towards a messy US presidential election, further disruption from Covid and a possible No Deal Brexit.

There are thousands of products on the market that can take advantage of the stock market whilst balancing returns against risk. The best way forward is to make sure you don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

There are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate?” I believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. We have a fully staffed local office in Benijofar with a back-up admin team, a Client Account Manager and a Relationship Manager. This means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance. Do not delay making a decision, call us today.

But for investors who can live with market volatility, the next few months could present some good opportunities.

If you are looking for help, then the team at Seagate Wealth are on hand to advise you every step of the way.

For a free no-obligation chat with a UK qualified adviser, call 965 704 338 or email: contact@seagatewealth.es

Change for self employed in Spain Self employed workers in Spain have long complained about the unfair system. We recently spotted an informative article written by Ian Comaskey for the Spanish Solutions Newsletter, so with his permission thought we would share it with you. Autonomous workers pay a high rate, often in excess of 250€ a month compared to 15 pounds per month in the UK. Worse still, and the real reason for the government's concern, is that self employed workers who earn 200,000 euro pay the same flat fee as workers earning 20,000 euro a year. It looks like a seven tier system will be introduced and this will help the country to get back on its feet after Covid. There are 3.2 million selfemployed people in Spain, around 16 percent of the country’s working population, including many foreigners. These include a range of professions such as: mechanics, hairdressers, entertainers, freelancers, estate agents, builders and tradesmen and many more. According to leaked reports this week, the Spanish government is ready to change the controversial way social security contributions are

News

CostaBlancaPeople 20th - 26th October 2020

paid. However, there is still no official word on when we can expect the changes, despite them being badly needed. The reforms mean the tax authorities will take into account actual earnings rather than charge a fixed monthly amount regardless of a person’s true income. Currently, the system of paying into social security involves a flat fee that stands at around €283 a month at the minimum rate. This fee gives selfemployed workers access to Spain’s public health system. They also benefit from contributions towards a state pension. The problem is that the fee has to be paid regardless of whether or not someone has any monthly earnings or not. This is not good at any time but far from ideal in a pandemic. Self-employed workers in Spain currently pay the highest monthly social security fees in the EU. The fees are far higher than the UK’s €14 per month, the Netherlands’s €50 a year or even Germany’s €140 for workers who earn more than €1,700 a month. Most people opt for the minimum contribution base, yet it is still expensive. Workers object because their

contribution is the same whether they earn €20,000 a year or €200,000. Unofficially, the new plans consist of establishing income brackets which set the level of contributions to reflect actual earnings. So, the more you earn, the more social security contribution you pay. Therefore, when self-employed workers see a reduced income, (like right now due to COVID) their social security contributions will drop and when their earnings increase again, they will pay more. The story was released by Cadena Ser this week who also said that the Spanish government was looking at a system that would set €12,000 as a minimum base. There would be dis-counts of up to 50 percent on contributions from those who do not reach that threshold. The next bracket for those earning between 12,000 and 25,000 a year is more or less as it is now for everyone and there will be a further five brackets above this amount. An overhaul in the system would be welcomed by the many ex-pats in the region and across the country who see it as deeply unfair.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling went through the ringer in a week devoid of significant economic activity, eventually rounding out the period back at pretty much where it started. Manoeuvres included a midweek hiccup, a resurgent response and a coming-backdown-to-Earth, all seemingly propelled by investor sentiment regarding the second wave of Covid and the never-ending Brexit negotiations. Each day it seemed to be either the best or worst performer against the major currencies, losing out to the euro on Tuesday, before climbing out of its trench on Wednesday. As the week came to an end, GBP/EUR slowly returned back to last Friday’s whereabouts. The limited UK data on offer weren’t enough to sway investors one way or the other. NIESR estimated that Q3 GDP rebounded by 15.2%, which offered an olive branch in a week where Covid cases continued to rise across the country. In addition, there was a 6.1% increase in retail sales reported by the BRC. However, the sentiment is that the data will get a lot worse in the coming months as the government announced a new Tier system to reintroduce some lockdown restrictions in areas where cases are on the rise. The real driving force for the pound this week was the Prime Minister and how his approach to Thursday’s passing of the self-imposed Brexit deadline affected investor sentiment. There is a relentlessly growing weight of negativity over the negotiations, as it’s feared that neither side will step back from their hard-line stances for fear of domestic backlash. All eyes are on a decision from the PM today over whether to continue the negotiations or not, however as with the other numerous deadlines that have passed, investors are still holding onto belief a deal will be struck as

neither party will wish to compound the economic damage caused by the pandemic. EUR On the other side of the coin, the euro enjoyed a week comprised of a mid-week boost, followed by a slump and an eventual climb back to normality. While Brexit negotiations didn’t play on European minds as much as it did forthe British, the resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic continued across the continent and captured the attention of most. Restrictions have been reintroduced in a number of countries, each attempting to tackle the surge in cases with varying measures. Economically, there were more data on offer for Europe than from the UK, however they still were not enough to encourage or dissuade investors. Increases in August industrial output figures for France and the Eurozone were less than expected, while a rebound in Italy surpassed forecasts. Inflation remained low in a number of countries, including Spain (-0.6%), Germany (-0.2%) and France (0%), while today’s pan-Eurozone figure is forecast at -0.3%. ZEW’s measures of economic sentiment in Germany and the Eurozone both deteriorated sharply in October, to 56.1 and 52.3, respectively. A speech from European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde was one of the week’s main headlines, as she revealed that the bank is looking “very seriously” at creating a digital euro to supplement cash. While Brexit was not so much a topic of discussion on the continent this week, all eyes will undoubtedly be drawn to Boris Johnson’s decision today regarding the future of the negotiations.

Shop Local

CostaBlancaPeople 20th - 26th October 2020

www.costablancapeople.com

SHOP LOCAL Last month, the Costa Blanca People launched our ‘Shop Local’ initiative, a campaign to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. So far, the campaign has been really well received among local business owners and it is encouraging to see so many businesses becoming advocates for the campaign by sharing the logo, supporting the initiative and voicing their support for fellow business owners in the area. Already, the campaign has had a positive impact with some of those displaying the logo already reporting that they have won new business this week as a direct result which is a wonderful result! We are seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic and believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. With local businesses still reeling from lockdown, this summer has been difficult for us all. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the winter months. Why have we launched this campaign? As the global pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to life on the Costa Blanca, we all need to do everything we possibly can to help our local economy

Benigest

bounce back stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve launched our Shop Local campaign. We want to engage in partnership with local business leaders to give our towns, commercial centres, retailers, small businesses and charitable organisations a boost. We want to help businesses, shops, restaurants and entrepreneurs the support they need to continue to make the southern Costa Blanca a great place to live, work and socialise. How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal in your social media posts. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open

JJ´s Cafe Bar

along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours. Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Making this campaign visible – on your social media (check our our ‘frame’ for your profile picture, search for ‘Shop Local Costa Blanca’ in frame options when you edit your profile picture to add a frame), in your window or place of business will help ensure it works and stays in the forefront of people’s minds. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Why shopping local works Shopping at local businesses puts money right back into the local economy, and by spending money in our local shops, restaurant, café or bar, we can all do our bit to help revive our local economy. Supporting our local businesses

creates jobs in local communities. Helping to grow the number of jobs in our local areas makes for a better place to live and work, which then creates a healthy economy for the community here on the Costa Blanca. Small businesses are often run by people who live in or near our local community. As the southern Costa Blanca continues to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people may have missed. Shop local, Costa Blanca It is our hope that Shopping Locally becomes a daily practice to grow a stronger community for us all. Across the southern Costa Blanca region, we value our local businesses and understand the impact that every one of our hard-earned euros can have on the vitality and survival of the places where we live. We all know that spending our money locally not only supports our friends and neighbours who run the businesses that make our communities unique, but also the critical public services that keep us safe and uphold our quality of life. Advocates We are still looking for advocates for our Shop Local campaign. To get

involved, all you need to do is display the campaign poster in your business and social media. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal and tag us in your posts so we can share your business with our followers – this applies to all local businesses, not just those who currently advertise with us. Together, we can ensure that our local economy not only survives, but thrives.

Eastenders Cafe goes meat free

EastEnders' cafe has gone meat-free replacing sausage and bacon baps with Quorn products. The BBC One soap have hired an "eco consultant" in a bid to go greener on the set, and one of the environmentally-friendly moves has seen Ian Beale's (Adam Woodyatt) greasy spoon - which is called Kathy's, after his mum Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) - ditch mouth-watering meaty fry ups for vegetarian alternatives. A source said: "When Ian Beale tucks into a full English at the caff, not a rind of bacon passes his lips. Instead, all food now shown on air is vegetarian. This means Quorn sausages and bacon, and some sort of kidney bean concoction for black pudding." As well as saving animals, the meat-free move is also a practical one for the soap's bosses, because vegetarian food can be re-heated if it goes cold on the set,

reducing waste. The source added: "Like everyone these days, EastEnders’ bosses want to do their bit for the environment and this is all part of a massive ongoing drive to reduce carbon emissions. "It means less food is wasted as veggie or vegan items can be re-heated - and obviously pigs, cows and sheep aren’t being slaughtered." The eco expert is also said to have been advising cast members about how they can go greener. This comes after former 'EastEnders' star Tamzin Outhwaite (Mel Owen) revealed last month she was trying to go alcohol, dairy and meat-free. She wrote on Twitter: "Back to no alcohol, no dairy , no meat. Last month I did 31 days... this time I want to beat it, then try not to drink, eat cheesecake and salt beef sandwiches all in one day! was a part of the show's original judging line-up alongside Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden when it started in 2007. According to The Sun, bosses are hoping Piers could shake things up on the show amid declining viewing figures for the most recent series. David, 49, has already signed a oneyear extension to his contract, keeping him on the talent show through 2021. However, Piers' Good Morning Britain contract is said to expire next year, meaning he would be free to film for the 2022 series. A BGT spokesperson said: 'Unsurprisingly, during these times, it won’t come as a shock to the public to hear that no such discussions have taken place regarding BGT 2022'.

Paddy’s scooter legacy Last week saw the two year anniversary of the passing of Paddy Weaver who was a well known and loved scooterist and Northern Soul fan here on the Costa Blanca. Paddy, aged 61, was an ex-off shore worker who retired to the Torrevieja area and fully embraced the Mediterranean lifestyle. Once a scooterist always a scooterist it would seem and soon Paddy had his classic Lambretta with him so that he could enjoy scootering in the sun. Paddy was the instrumental founder member of the East Coast Scooter Krew, a group of likeminded individuals who enjoy a good ride out in the sun on scooters. A mixture of classic Lambretta and Vespas are still out together with the latest Scomadi

and Royal Alloys that have recently come to the market to rejuvenate the scooter scene. Ride-outs are regular, meeting in

Los Montisinos twice a week, Wednesday and Sunday. The group has gone from strength to strength since Paddy’s passing which last week saw 22 scooters

out for the Sunday morning rideout. This was a record despite some of the diehard stalwarts being missing. In previous years the group has enjoyed holiday breaks on scooters to destinations such as Ibiza and Javea. This year’s trip to Ibiza planned for May was postponed due to COVID but will take place a soon as its safe and the restrictions are lifted. Sadly, this is not in the foreseeable future but until then members will continue with the local oneday excursions for ‘Menu del Día’ taking in places such as Mazarrón, Cartagena, Murcia, Alicante and Benidorm to name but a few. If you fancy joining in, simply search for the East Coast Scooter Krew Page on FaceBook for more information and pictures.

Labour inspectors deem 3000 Amazon workers as ‘false autonomo’ Labour inspectors have deemed 3000 Amazon Flex delivery workers to be working as ‘false autonomo’ or false self employed. The workers, mainly working for Amazon in Madrid and Barcelona, filed a complaint a year ago via the UGT workers’ union. The union said in a statement that it had denounced Amazon's use of autonomous (self

employed) delivery people who use their own vehicle to deliver packages through what the platform calls 'Amazon Flex'. According to UGT data, 2,116 people are working under these conditions in Madrid, and a further 805 in Barcelona which represents almost €4m in unmade contributions to the General Social Security Scheme. The union has specified that

there are still provinces in which the outcome of the Labor Inspection is being awaited. The UGT indicated that this latest complaint will be subject to new judicial processes, with the difference between this situation and previous complaints being that there is now a precedent set by the Supreme Court ruling on the Glovo case.

Healthy Halloween stuffed peppers

Healthy Halloween pizzas Ingredients 200g strong white flour 200g strong wholewheat flour 1 tsp or 7g sachet easy-blend dried yeast 250ml warm water For the topping 300g passata 1 garlic clove , crushed 1 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil 75g grated mozzarella 10 black olives Handful cherry tomatoes , halved Handful basil leaves , to serve Method STEP 1 Mix the flours and yeast with a pinch of salt in a food processor fitted with a dough blade, or combine in a bowl. Pour in the water and mix to a soft dough, then work for 1 min in a processor or 5 mins by hand. Remove the dough, divide into 4 pieces and roll out on a lightly floured surface to rounds about 15cm across. Lift onto heavily oiled baking sheets.

STEP 2 Mix the passata with the garlic, oil and a little seasoning. Spread over the dough to within 2cm of the edges. Scatter with the mozzarella. Halve the olives and tomatoes. Place an olive in the centre of each pizza to make the spider's body. Cut the rest into little legs and arrange them around the spider bodies. Dot the tomatoes here and there. Leave to rise for 20 mins. Heat oven to 240C/ fan 220C/gas 9 or the highest setting. STEP 3 Bake the pizza for 10-12 mins until crisp and golden around the edges. Scatter with the basil to serve.

Ingredients 4 small peppers (a mix of orange, red and yellow looks nice) 25g pine nuts 1 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil 1 red onion , chopped 2 fat garlic cloves , crushed 1 small aubergine , chopped into small pieces 200g pouch mixed grains (we used bulghur wheat and quinoa) 2 tbsp sundried tomato paste Zest of 1 lemon Bunch basil , chopped Method STEP 1 Cut the tops off the peppers (keeping the tops to one side) and remove the seeds and any white flesh from inside. Use a small sharp knife to carve spooky Halloween faces into the sides. Chop any offcuts into small pieces and set aside. STEP 2 Toast the pine nuts in a dry pan for a few mins until golden, and set aside. Heat the oil in the pan, and heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Cook the onion in the oil for 8-10 mins until softened. Stir in the garlic, pepper offcuts and aubergine and cook for another 10 mins, until the veggies are soft. Add a splash of water if the pan looks dry. Season.

STEP 3 Squeeze the pouch of grains to break them up, then tip into the pan with the tomato paste. Stir for a minute or two to warm through, then remove from the heat and add the lemon zest, basil and pine nuts. STEP 4 Fill each pepper with the grain mixture. Replace the lids, using cocktail sticks to secure them in place, and put the peppers in a deep roasting tin with the carved faces facing upwards. Cover with foil and bake for 35 mins, uncovered for the final 10. The peppers should be soft and the filling piping hot.

Ina Garten sparks debate over knives in dishwasher Ina Garten has sparked a debate on social media after sharing a photo of kitchenware and utensils in her half-empty dishwasher. The Barefoot Contessa star uploaded a photo of clean dishes in her dishwasher to Instagram, where she wrote: “If you’re not sick of unloading the dishwasher, could you please come unload mine??” While the message resonated with some of her more than 2.8m Ina Garten Instagram followers, it was what Garten had loaded into her dishwasher that captured the most attention, with many comments accusing the chef of breaking dishwasher etiquette by using the appliance to wash knives and a spatula with a wooden handle among plates and other dishes. “Oooo. Knives in the dishwasher! Doesn’t damage them?” one person commented, prompting the 72-year-old to respond: “I do it many times a day and some of them are 40 years old!” In response to another follower’s inquiry, the cookbook

author said she puts “everything” in the appliance. “EVERYTHING goes in the dishwasher!!” she said, adding: “My assistant used to put the bird cage in the dishwasher (she took the bird out first). However, Garten did acknowledge that there is one exception - cast iron pans, which should be washed by hand. The Food Network star’s advice was met with shock and gratitude from many of her followers, who said they too would be putting knives in the dishwasher. “If Ina Garten puts her knives and spatulas in the dishwasher, then I can put my knives and spatulas in the dishwasher!” one person commented. Garten’s guidance comes after Lucinda Ottusch, dishwasher expert at Whirlpool Corporation’s Institute of Home Sciences, said that there are numerous things one should not wash in the dishwasher, including sharp knives, nonstick pots and pans, antiques and other delicate items and aluminium cookware.

Wine flavoured gin...it’s a thing Most of us here at the Costa Blanca People enjoy a tipple or three and wine and gin seem to be our favourites. So, imagine our joy at hearing that a Pinot Grigio gin exists? That’s two of our favourite drinks of all time and in one drink. Ginato – an Italian gin brand – has created Pinot Grigio gin, which is made from Pinot Grigio grapes, Sicilian lemons and Tuscan juniper berries. All these flavours make for a super-drinkable, citrusy gin, that tastes just like the white wine. The gin is also described by Ginato as having notes of pear and grapefruit, and has a honeyed finish. It’s recommended that you drink the gin, which has an ABV of 43%, with tonic. Or it’s also delicious when used to make a spritz cocktail. Think Aperol Spritz but with gin....delish! If Pinot Grigio gin’s not your thing (although, how could it not be?), then Ginato also makes other flavoured gins. Ginato Clementino is flavoured with clementine and Nebbiolo grape, while Ginato Melograno tastes like pomegranate and Barbera grape. Then there’s Ginato Pompelmo, which is the most beautiful shade of pink, and tastes like pink grapefruit and Sangiovese grape. Ginato really is spoiling us with all these gin options. With the UK roll out undeeway, it won’t be long until a Spanish retailers start stocking this delightful drink. However, until then you can grab a bottle on line at Amazon for £30.95.

Signs you're not eating enough protein They don’t call protein one of the building blocks of life for nothing. This macronutrient makes up the major component of all our cells and provides the essential amino acids that keep our bodies up and running. Problem is, some of us aren't getting as much of it as we should be. A true protein deficiency is quite rare in meat-eaters — though it can be seen in people who have anorexia, cancer, or, in the case of severe malnutrition or undiagnosed Crohn’s disease. But sometimes, vegans or people who follow a raw food diet could find themselves running a little low. Vegetarians who eat dairy or even just eggs are unlikely to have a problem meeting their protein goals, she says. We have all these new plant-based

foods in the marketplace, but [in terms of protein], they’re not all created equal. Take milk, for example: One cup of 1 percent cow’s milk contains about 8.5 grams of protein, while a cup of almond milk only contains just 1 gram. Plus, most plant-based proteins aren't complete proteins—meaning they’re short on at least one of the nine essential amino acids that can be found in animal foods like meat, seafood, and eggs. Soy and quinoa are complete proteins, but beans, peas, grains, nuts, and seeds are not. It is recommended that both men and women eat about .8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight, but if you’re strength training or exercising regularly—or are trying to preserve muscle while cutting

calories—you may need a little more. One pound is equal to 2.2 kilograms; so, an adult who weighs 150 pounds would need 54 grams of protein. And there’s more to it than just meeting your macros. You should also be eating protein at the right time, too.The body is most happy when it’s getting some protein every four to five hours. Here are five signs that you may not be getting as much protein as you should be. You’re prone to stress fractures Your bones need more than just a healthy dose of calcium—they also need enough protein, too. That was the conclusion from a 2018 research review from some of the world’s leading osteoporosis foundations, which found that eating a protein-rich diet can help protect your bones. When we aren’t getting enough protein to fuel our organs and brain, our bodies borrow from other areas, including the storages in our skeletal muscle tissue. Without the support of strong skeletal muscle tissue, our bones are more susceptible to injures like fractures and breaks. Your hair and nails look brittle Because protein is an essential part of your hair and nails, your nails can feel softer and your hair can become more brittle over time. After a few months of not eating enough protein, you may also experience some hair loss, in part because the body shuts down hair

growth to preserve its protein stores. You’re losing weight - from your muscles The number on the scale may be ticking downward, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. Typically, if people aren’t getting enough protein, their bodies will break down muscle to get more of it. And if they’re losing muscle, they’re also holding on to fat stores, so their body composition could be changing in an adverse way. You feel weak You probably won’t feel fatigued right away, but over time, people who aren’t eating enough protein may feel

more tired or sluggish than usual. Sure, less muscle mass can play a part in this, but protein is a component of hemoglobin, which is present in our red blood cells and transports oxygen throughout the body. And too-low levels of oxygen could cause weakness or shortness of breath. You’re always catching a cold Protein is one of the building blocks of antibodies, which are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight off foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. If you don’t have enough protein, you could have a compromised immune system and perhaps be ill more often than other people.

Long Covid Do I really know him? I am engaged to my partner of seven years. He is reluctant to talk about anything that has gone on in his life between leaving his wife and children 10 years ago and meeting me. It seems as if that part of his life never existed. In the past I have discovered some big lies, which he continued to maintain even after I knew the truth. He also lies about current things and I catch him out all the time. Recently we were at a restaurant and a man came up to him and said his name to his face in a menacing way. My partner was extremely rattled by this, and he wanted to make a hasty exit from the restaurant. Since then I can’t stop thinking about the incident. I don’t want to make another mistake. I can’t live with deception. A friend of mine suggested he had been in prison or had mixed with bad people, and is keeping it from me. Seven years is a long time to be with someone who you don’t trust. You need to sit down together and be upfront with him about your concerns. Give some examples of past and present lies and tell him you can’t base your future relationship on deception. Is it because he thinks that this will get him out of trouble? Explain that it is a very short-term solution because when you do find out the truth it just makes it worse. The reason could be buried in the past. A marriage has to be based on trust or it won’t last. Counselling could enable him to open up and have the confidence to talk about the past. Unless he gets help, the bottom line is that you would be unwise to marry someone who lies.

At the start of the pandemic we were told that Covid-19 was a respiratory illness from which most people would recover within two or three weeks, but it’s increasingly clear that there may be tens of thousands of people, if not hundreds of thousands, who have been left experiencing symptoms months after becoming infected. Now, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has released a report which suggests that “long Covid” may not be a single syndrome, but up to four different ones, which some patients might be experiencing simultaneously. Subtypes of lasting Covid identified by the NIHR included patients experiencing the aftereffects of intensive care; those with post-viral fatigue; people with lasting organ damage; and those with fluctuating symptoms that move around the body. “We believe that the term long Covid is being used as a catch-all for more than one syndrome, possibly up to four, and that the lack of distinction between these syndromes may explain the challenges people are having in being believed and accessing services,” said Dr Elaine Maxwell, the lead author of the report, which drew upon the experiences of patients and the latest published research. However, Prof Danny Altmann, an immunologist at Imperial College London, cautioned that narrowing long Covid down to just four syndromes might be too simplistic. Hospital discharge is often only the start of a lengthy recovery process. Many Covid-19 patients who have survived a period in intensive care are too weak to sit unaided or lift their arms off the

bed, and some may even struggle to speak or swallow. They may also be affected by depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. Many Covid “long-haulers” report fatigue, aching muscles and difficulty concentrating. The extent to which this overlaps with chronic fatigue syndrome is being investigated. CFS has previously been linked to infection with Epstein-Barr virus and Q fever. Studies of people who were infected during the 2003 Sars outbreak have also indicated that around a third of them had a reduced tolerance of exercise for many months, despite their lungs appearing healthy. Ongoing breathlessness, coughs, or a racing pulse could be symptoms of lasting damage to the lungs or heart, although this isn’t necessarily permanent. Lung damage seems particularly prevalent among patients who required hospital treatment for Covid-19. A recent study found that six weeks after leaving hospital, around half of patients were still experiencing breathlessness, dropping to 39 percent at 12 weeks. Meanwhile, approximately a third of hospitalised patients sustain heart damage, but those with seemingly mild infections can also be affected. A separate study of 100 patients, many of whom had relatively mild symptoms when they were infected in March, revealed that 78 of them showed abnormal structural changes to their hearts on an MRI scan. These changes didn’t necessarily cause symptoms, and may dissipate with time, however. Ongoing problems with the liver and skin have also been reported. Perhaps the weirdest group of Covid long-haulers are those with

fluctuating symptoms. A common theme is that symptoms arise in one physiological system then abate, only for symptoms to arise in a different system, the NIHR report said. This fits with the results of a survey of long Covid support group members which found that 70 percent experienced fluctuations in the type of symptoms, and 89 percent in the intensity of their symptoms. Although the underlying mechanism remains unproven, such symptoms might fit with a disrupted immune system, Altmann said. All ages affected Estimates have suggested that 10 percent of Covid patients experience symptoms lasting longer than three weeks, and around one in 50 will still be ill at three months. The NIHR report said lasting symptoms had been observed in all age groups, including children, but unpublished results from the Covid Symptom Study suggest that women and older people may be at greater risk. “Above the age of 18, the risk of symptoms lasting for longer than a month seems to generally increase with age,” said Prof Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London who runs the study. A particularly under-studied group are elderly care home residents. “What we’ve been hearing from frontline staff is that there’s a group of patients who maybe looked like they were recovering, and then had a relapse,” said Prof Karen Spilsbury, chair in nursing research at the University of Leeds, who has been studying the impact of Covid-19 on care home residents. Their strength and stamina seemed to suffer, while Covid may have accelerated the rate of cognitive decline in those with dementia.

Glitter litter French police invade homes of Scientists have found evidence that glitter used in cosmetics and body paint may harm rivers and lakes. Experts say that biodegradable alternatives are no better for the environment than conventional types of glitter. Glitter contains tiny fragments known as microplastics, which can find their way into rivers and oceans, often taking many years to degrade. Last year, scientists called for a total ban on glitter over concerns the particles are polluting oceans and hurting marine life.

government and health officials French police have carried out raids on the homes of top government and health officials as part of an investigation into their handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. French courts launched an inquiry in July after members of the public, doctors and victims’ relatives accused the government of criminal negligence in terms of its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Health Minister Olivier Véran and the director of the national health agency, Jérôme Salomon, are among those

whose homes were searched. The French government has faced criticism over shortages of equipment and slow response times. Prime Minister Jean Castex is also under investigation, French media report, as is his predecessor Edouard Philippe and Mr Véran's predecessor Agnès Buzyn. The prime minister and Mr Véran have been at the forefront of France's new policy of imposing night-time curfews in nine cities, including Paris, which are being enforced by 12,000 police.

"This means at 21:00 everyone must be at home and, without exception, every place, business or public service open to the public will be shut," Mr Castex said. The special court conducting the current investigation hears cases of alleged wrongdoing by ministers and other government officials in the course of their duties. However, for claims to be substantiated, there would have to be evidence that officials knowingly failed to take obvious steps that would have saved lives.

New fast PCR tests at Quirón Quirónsalud introduces new technology in its labs to carry out up to 1000 PCRs daily and get results in less than 24 hours Quirónsalud Hospitals in Torrevieja, Alicante and Murcia have introduced a new technique in their labs to carry out up to 1000 PCR tests daily and get results in less than 24 hours, thus becoming the best facilities for this kind of test in Alicante province and Murcia region. These hospitals have also set up a separate service to carry out these tests to ensure a fast and safe service. This new technology features automated laboratory equipment that uses a magnetic system to extract and purify nucleic acids (DNA and RNA).To do so, samples obtained from patients are incubated with magnetic spheres that

have the ability to capture the DNA or RNA released by bacteria, viruses or cells. These spheres containing the nucleic acids are then attached to magnetic probes in the equipment to capture the released DNA or RNA. Finally, the nucleic acids are separated from the magnetic spheres using an elution process with water, obtaining the fully purified DNA or RNA product. As Dr. Juan José Mata, an immunology laboratory specialist at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Alicante Hospital, explains, “this new equipment allows us greater speed and efficiency during the RNA extraction and purification procedure in samples from patients with suspected Covid-19 infection. Therefore, these advantages result in a shorter

response time in obtaining PCR results. As it is an automated process, manual errors during the technique and potential cross-contamination between samples are also minimised.” This entire procedure is carried out in a Clean Room designed as per international GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) quality standards where the samples for conducting PCR tests are analysed and for the development of advanced therapy medicinal products, such as vaccines with dendritic cells. This lab has been conducting these kinds of tests for over 10 years with in-house immunologists and genetics specialists, and is one of the most renowned laboratories in the Valencian Community.

Gurtel convictions confirmed Origins of popular expressions The Spanish Supreme Court confirmed 29 convictions handed down in 2018 against leading members of Gürtel, a corrupt bribes-for-contracts network that operated across six Spanish regions between 1999 and 2005. Justices have also backed the national High Court (Audiencia Nacional) decision declaring the Popular Party (PP) civilly liable in connection with the case, and telling it to return €245,000 obtained through unlawful channels. The May 2018 ruling triggered a political earthquake in Spain and ended the political career of then-Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of the PP. Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Party (PSOE) led a successful no-confidence motion with support from Unidas Podemos and various small regional parties, and was sworn into office on 2nd June of that year. With nearly 200 official suspects, Gürtel became the largest pre-trial probe in modern Spanish history and was broken up into sections to facilitate the investigation. Rajoy himself was called in as a witness on 26th July, 2017. During questioning, he said the PP never accepted cash donations from businesses and insisted that he personally never dealt with the party’s financial affairs, only the political ones. In its 2018 ruling, the Audiencia Nacional questioned the “credibility” of Rajoy’s statements. Revised convictions The Supreme Court has slightly reduced the prison term for Luis Bárcenas, a former PP treasurer who has

been a key element of the Gürtel investigation. Instead of 33 years and four months, he will serve 29 years and one month. In July 2013, Bárcenas admitted to being the author of secret hand-written ledgers — first published by Spanish national newspaper El Pais in January of that year — that suggested the existence of illegal corporate donations to the PP and cash payments to top PP officials. He was also found to have a fortune hidden away in foreign bank accounts. The court has not altered the 51-year prison term against the mastermind of the corrupt business network, Francisco Correa (whose surname translates as belt, or Gürtel in German). Correa was a businessman who cultivated relationships with PP officials, offering them gifts in exchange for government contracts in public works and event organisation. At the height of his power,

Correa went by the nickname of Don Vito, after the character in The Godfather. The Supreme Court also confirmed the civil liability of former PP minister Ana Mato, who was found to have accepted gifts from the Gürtel network valued at €25,608. In its decision, the Supreme Court agrees with the Audiencia Nacional that companies controlled by Correa worked together with PP leaders and party members to create a “stable collaboration.” Under the system, Correa’s businesses received preferential treatment in tenders for public contracts, and government officials received cash and gifts in exchange. Correa companies organized trips, events and party conventions for the PP, in a system that used false invoicing and front companies to conceal the origin of the funds.

‘Cat Got Your Tongue’ Modern Definition: something you say to someone when you are annoyed because they will not speak Origin: The English Navy used to use a whip made with multiple rope endings called a ‘cat’o’nine-tails’. After whipping a victim, they would joke “cat got your tongue?” Others believe the expression comes from the Ancient Egyptian method of cutting out the tongues of blasphemers and serving them to cats for dinner. ‘Rule Of Thumb’ Modern Definition: a practical and approximate way of doing or measuring something. Origin: In the 1700s, UK man Sir Francis Buller ruled that a man could beat his

wife with a stick as long as it was no wider than his thumb. ‘Don’t Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth’ Modern Definition: Don’t question the value of a gift. Origin: People used to determine a horse’s age and condition by its teeth before deciding to buy it. ‘Give A Cold Shoulder’ Modern Definition: to intentionally ignore someone or treat someone in an unfriendly way. Origin: According to history, when a British dinner party host wanted his guests to leave, they would quite literally serve a cold cut of poor quality meat, usually mutton. ‘Raining Cats and Dogs’ Modern Definition: raining extremely hard. Origin: There are multiple theories associated with this expression. One comes from Norse mythology, in which cats would symbolise heavy rains and dogs were associated with Odin, the God of storms.

Passenger numbers down Sports School program postponed by 75 percent Spanish airports have recorded their worst summer season this year due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions placed on travel to Spain. The number of air passengers that passed through the national airport network between July and September – including both months – was 21.4 million, a 75 percent fall on the same period in 2019, according to figures from Spain’s Aena airport authority. To put the magnitude of the fall in context, there were more passengers recorded in each of the summer months last year than the entire quarter in 2020. In other words, nearly 30 million travellers arrived in July and August, while 27 million were registered in September. Another worrying factor is that air traffic is on a downward trend. While there were promising signs of recovery at the beginning of summer, this was cut short when several nations introduced quarantines and other restrictions on travellers who visited Spain due to the high incidence of the coronavirus in the country. The impact was considerable given that Germany and the United Kingdom, which provide the largest sources of tourists to Spain, were among the countries that applied restrictions. Air traffic fell 76.7 percent in July, with

respect to the same month in 2019, and recovered slightly in August, dropping 69.6 percent compared to the same period from last year. But this uptick was short-lived: in September, the figure plummeted 79.9 percent, with just 5.45 million passengers recorded. The drop coincided with a rise in coronavirus cases in Spain, which has already

entered a second wave of the pandemic. Amid fear of contagion, the number of international visitors to Spain fell nearly 90 percent in September, with just 1.95 million registered. And it’s not just passenger numbers that fell; occupancy on planes also dropped. The number of flights in September fell by only 50.9 percent, meaning that scheduled flights have been arriving emptier – an issue that is hurting airlines’ profits. Freight

transportation, meanwhile, dropped 23.1 percent upon last year’s figures, with 71,369 tons recorded. The Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez airport in the Spanish capital received the highest number of passengers in Spain, with 985,077 arriving in September. This represents a fall of 82.3 percent with respect to the same month in 2019. The airport with the next-highest number of arrivals was Barcelona-El Prat, with 844,414 (-83.5 percent); followed by Palma de Mallorca, with 513,086 (86.4 percent); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 377,312 (-81.9 percent); Gran Canaria, with 295,825 (-70 percent); North Tenerife-Ciudad de La Laguna, with 277,608 (-46.3 percent); and Ibiza, with 275,016 (-76 percent). The outlook for air traffic in October is not much more promising. The Spanish government recently decreed a state of alarm in the Madrid region in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Under the emergency measure, nine cities – including the Spanish capital – were placed under a perimetral lockdown, which has restricted the movement of more than five million people. This has led to an additional fall in national air passengers, compounding the drop in international visitors.

The Councillor for Sports, Víctor Bernabéu, has announced that the School Sports program, which is provided in different educational centres throughout the municipality of Orihuela will be postponed until January. The council has conducted a survey among the schools participating in this program "to assess the expected participation in this program for the 2020-2021 school year” and to determine if the program could be offered safely given the current epidemiological situation. The feedback was mixed, with six schools deciding not to participate in the Sports School program at all, nine centres said they would participate in team sports competitions as long as the evolution of the pandemic allowed it. Three other centres said they would participate in sports competitions. So, given these results, the Department of Sports said: "We have decided to postpone the School Sports program until the month of January. It will be resumed with all the guarantees and according to the demand of the schools." The mayor of Sports has also reported on the Municipal Sports Schools and the places occupied this year in the centre of Orihuela and districts. And it is that before the incidence of COVID-19, "the

registrations show 55 percent of the occupied places (522) of the total of offered (1,000), while in the previous year and after the DANA they were 80 percent". In Athletics the occupation is 46 percent, basketball 64 percent, handball 12 percent, football 98 percent, rhythmic gymnastics 64 percent, swimming 100 percent and tennis 33 percent. On the other hand, the World School of Sports on the coast began to provide its service on 5th October, as planned, offering disciplines such as skating, fighting sports, tennis, water sports, rhythmic gymnastics, musical accompaniment and multisport . Councillor Bernabéu has also announced that "as of 188th October the competition season begins, so access to the stands will be 75 percent with a maximum of 1,000 attendees, thus complying with the rules established by the Ministry of Health" . In addition, access to training is allowed for one parent per athlete, and access to changing rooms respecting the occupation limit.

Tyre Safety Checks We Can All Do Tyres are arguably one of the most important elements of a vehicle, however they are often so easily neglected, despite the abuse they can face on a regular basis. They are worn down through normal use, must withstand heat and cold and are often bashed by potholes and kerbs, it is no real surprise that they can become easily damaged. It is for that reason that we must educate ourselves to pay more attention to our tyres, so that we can get the best out of them, and the safest driving experience possible. It is important that our tyres have sufficient tread to enable them to maintain contact with the road surface in any weather conditions. The grooves in the tyres are used to displace surface content to ensure the tyres grip the road, and so it is only if there is enough of a gap for that surface material, water for example, to go into that the tyres remain efficient. The minimum tread depth of a tyre is 1.6 millimetres across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing at 3 millimetres. At 1.6 millimetres in wet weather it takes an extra two car lengths (8 metres) to stop at 50 mph than if your tread was 3 millimetres. Over or under inflated tyres will cause uneven wear and so the tread might also be uneven, possibly deeper on one side than the other.

We can and should check the tyres on a regular basis to ensure that they are at their optimum inflation and with consistent tread. We need to get close to the tyre and look at each one of them separately. Firstly, we can feel around each tyre with our hands, including the sides, feeling for anything that doesn´t seem correct, such as bubbling or even items protruding from the tyre. It is possible for example for a tyre to contain a nail, but the nail is plugging the hole it has made and so deflation can be terribly slow, despite this potentially dangerous situation. As we look around each tyre, we should also check the tread. If the tyre is under inflated, then there may be more wear towards he edges of the tyres. If a tyre is over inflated there could be more wear in the centre. As we work our way around the tyre, we should also look within the tread pattern for ridges between the tread. These are called the Principle Grooves and are indicators of tyre wear. We should check each tyre individually, including the spare, to make sure that the tread wear is consistent and sufficient. We should also check the tyre pressure, although we may have to go to a local service station to do this. Most modern vehicles have a plate stuck to them, often on or near the door, which indicated the optimum pressure under normal driving conditions. If not, you might have to check your manual. You should always check tyre pressure when

they are cold. The tyres themselves also contain a series of numbers and letters which reveals a wealth of technical information. The tyres your vehicle is fitted with are registered on your ITV card, although you can change them for another size with a tolerance up to 3% from the size you have on your ITV card. If you look at the side of the tyre you will see a sequence which looks something like this sample, “195 / 55 R 16 87V”. Here, “195” refers to 195 millimetres, the nominal section width of the tyre. “55” is 55%, the aspect ratio, representing the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the nominal section width, i.e., in our case, 55% of 195mm. “R” stands for radial construction. “16” is the diameter of the tyre´s inner rim, this time in inches. “87” is the load capacity of the tyre. “V” indicates the maximum permitted speed. Another code stamped onto the tyre reveals the month and year of manufacture. For example, a code “4108” indicates that the tyre was manufactured in week 41 of the year 2008. There are many cheap tyres on offer for sale which, when you look closely, might well be incredibly old tyres. This is something to be very conscious of, especially as the recommendations are that tyres should be replaced at least every 5 years, so you might not be aware that you are replacing your tyres with those already older than the recommendation. Because of the importance of tyres

and the functions they perform, it is always worthwhile spending that little extra effort, time and even money to ensure they are correct. Garages will be able to check your tyres for you, if you have any doubt, and can recommend any remedial action you might need to take. However, it is also crucial that we each perform the basic checks mentioned here on a regular basis, at least monthly and every time before a long journey to ensure our vehicles are safe and at optimum performance for fuel efficiency.

National Speed Limit On some 7,000 kilometres of the secondary road network in Spain, the maximum permitted speed limit is set at 90 kilometres per hour, on roads where no other restrictions are in force, in other words, where there are no signs indicating a stricter limit. This is in effect the same concept as the commonly referred to “National Speed Limit” which is in place on British roads, where a maximum is automatically set on roads outside of towns. The maximum permitted speed on the secondary road network is 90 kilometres per hour, for cars, motorbikes, small motor homes and pick-ups, as well as buses (except under certain

circumstances), derivatives of cars, and mixed adapted vehicles. In Spain, speed limits are dictated by three elements, the road, the vehicle, and the driver (in some cases). Therefore, some vehicles are still restricted further, such as trucks, vans, large motor homes, articulated vehicles, vehicles towing a trailer, and others not listed, which are restricted to a maximum permitted speed of 80 kilometres per hour on these roads. Bicycles and mopeds are restricted to a maximum permitted speed of 45 kilometres per hour. Remember, we are talking only about the secondary road network, where no

other restriction is in place, so if there is a sign saying that the maximum permitted speed is 80, or 50, for example, then that is the case. Similar vehicular restrictions are also in place on motorways, as we can see from the table. It is important to know what classification your vehicle is, if it´s not so easy to identify such as is the case of cars or motorbikes, and you can find that information on your documentation. Some drivers are also restricted such as may be the case those suffering certain medical conditions, for which the doctor has determined a restriction is necessary.

The Mathematics of the Stopping Distance Maintaining a safe distance is one of the fundamental factors of road safety, however it is not always easy to calculate how much space we need to leave between us and the vehicle in front, although there is a simple solution to a mathematical problem. We will start with the science bit. There are the two main factors that influence how we can bring our vehicle to a safe stop. The first one is the reaction time, defined as “the time between the stimulation of a sensory organ and the start of a response or a reaction.” Applied to an emergency while driving, it is the time between we perceive a danger and act on the controls of the vehicle to avoid a collision. The second factor is the braking distance, which, as its name indicates, is the distance it takes for our vehicle to stop completely from the moment we apply the brakes. We will add in two points of reference here. Firstly, we will define the word, “hazard”, which in motoring terms is, “anything, actual or potential, which causes a vehicle to deviate speed, course or direction.” The second point we will throw in here is that irrespective of maximum permitted speed limits on the road, we should always drive at such a speed which allows us to stop well within a distance we can see to be clear. Now that we have those basic elements in mind, we will analyse a hypothetical situation in which we are driving on the motorway and the vehicle that precedes us abruptly stops. Our natural reaction will be to step on the brake pedal as quickly and forcefully as possible to avoid the collision. The time that elapses between the perception of the danger, or hazard, and the moment we step on the brake pedal is the “reaction time”. During that time interval we will have travelled some distance before we actually started to reduce the speed of the vehicle. Once we depress the brake pedal, the vehicle will still continue to travel forward, and will do so for a variable number of metres depending on the state of our

brake equipment, the condition of the tyres, the suspension, and even the road condition, until we stop completely. This is the “braking distance”. Although there are many different factors which determine the actual reaction time and braking distance, we can establish equations based on common elements. For example, in the hypothetical situation that we have just described, it is likely that the reaction time would be 0.75 seconds, assuming the driver is alert and in good physical and mental health. If we are tired or distracted, the reaction time is significantly affected. However, maintaining our 0.75 second principal reaction time, if we are on a motorway and travelling at 120 kilometres per hour, our vehicle would have travelled 25 metres before we depress the brake pedal. The accurate braking distance is significantly more difficult to estimate, on account of the different parameters of each vehicle, road and environmental conditions, however we can generalise once again. A modern vehicle in good condition, on a good road in good weather will travel between 65 and 75 metres from a speed of 120 kilometres per hour. In total, during our hypothetical situation, we travelled 25 metres and 70 metres during our respective reaction time and braking distance, and so 95 metres were covered from the moment we perceived the hazard and our vehicle coming to a stop. Therefore, it is crucial that we had a minimum of 100 metres distance between us and the vehicle in front to allow us to stop in time. Again, we must stress the word, minimum. The more distance we have, the safer we will be. Remember these are optimum conditions we are talking about, but there are too many factors for it to be exact for every vehicle or situation. This, by the way, is the reason that distance marker chevrons are spaced at 100 metres apart on motorways. It is advisable to keep two chevrons apart from the vehicle in front, in other words, 200 metres, thus doubling our minimum safety distance.

We also mention the weather and environmental conditions. In wet weather the distance should always be at least doubled, although the roads are particularly hazardous during the first rain after a dry spell, so the more distance you can leave, the better. We have discussed motorways, but the same equations apply on all roads. If we are travelling on an area of the conventional road network where the maximum permitted speed is 90 kilometres per hour, and the conditions allow us to do that safely, then we will have travelled 18.75 metres during the reaction time and the braking distance for a modern car in top condition would be 40 metres, and so we will have travelled almost 60 metres from the moment we noticed the hazard. Our minimum distance on these roads therefore should be 75 metres, although again it is better to double it to 150 metres. On slower moving roads we should have at least 25 metres on roads where the maximum traffic flow is at 50 kilometres per hour, and 9 metres distance at 30 kilometres per hour. So, now we have done the technical bit, we promised a simpler solution. You might remember the “two second rule” from your days of learning to drive. Well, the good news is that you can still use a variation of that concept. Saying the phrase, “only a fool breaks the two second rule”, at a normal pace, even in your head, takes around 2 seconds. So, keeping an eye on the vehicle in front, watch as it passes a fixed point on the road, a sign, a shadow, a parked car, and say the phrase to yourself, or count if it´s easier. If you pass the same point before reaching the end of the sentence then you are too close, so back off. It is better if you can leave 3 or 4 seconds, repeating the phrase. In our motorway scenario above, the car would travel over 60 metres in 2 seconds, so you can see that it´s not enough. Remember, the more distance you can allow, the safer you will be, as you are then more likely to be able to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear.

What do I need to know about Spanish tyre law? Spanish law requires that your vehicle is fitted with the correct type and size of tyre for the vehicle type you are driving and for the purpose it is being used. This means fitting the right tyres and for safety ensuring that they are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressure. The legal limit for minimum depth of the tread on your tyres is 1.6 millimetres,

across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. What are principal grooves and tread depth indicators, and how do I find these? Principal grooves are the wide grooves in the tyre tread which have the treaddepth indicators located inside them. For safety reasons it is recommended that you replace your tyres before the

legal limit is reached. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing at 3 millimetres. At 1.6 millimetres in wet weather it takes an extra two car lengths (8 metres) to stop at 50 mph than if your tread was 3 millimetres. A regular check of your tyres can help you to avoid 200 euro / each wheel in fines for having tyres worn beyond the legal minimum limit on your vehicle.

Imanyo Golf Society Las Ramblas Golf Society José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup at Altorreal This is our seventh year of the forming of the society and we started the year off by playing for the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup in memory of Antonio’s (Imanyo’s owner) younger brother who sadly died in a car accident 23 years ago.

Day one and Graham Murray took an early lead with 38 points (just easing out Lindsay Forbes on countback). Three players, Friedel Knebel, Bryan Neal and Petina Murray shared the next three spots each scoring 37 points whilst yours truly got onto the leader board with 36. Collecting a tidy sum Friedel carded the only ‘2’ today.

Eighteen players travelled to one of our favourite courses, Altorreal, as we were travelling into the Murcia region we were only allowed three in a 5 seater car to comply with the Murcia Covid rules, the weather was absolutely perfect for golf. The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups. Winner of the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup was from group A, “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 36points, runner up in group A was HCP secretary Martin Gadney with 33 points, group B winner with another handicap cutting score was Alan Boyden with 34 points, group B runner up on count back from Graham Butterworth was Lozz Maslanka with 32 points. There were six nearest the pins which were won by, hole 1 “Sandy” Terry Burton, holes 7 and 10 “Mr

Hola! and welcome to Stableford week. Played over three rounds, it would be the player with the highest total at the end of Friday’s game who would win this year’s title.

Amstel” Peter Kelly, holes 9 and 14 “On Fire” Steve Burns, hole 16 no winner, best front nine on count back went to “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly beating “Sandy” Terry Burton with 20 points, best back nine went to “Cash Point” Alan Boyden with 20 points, the Two’s pot €15 was not won. The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where Antonio and his son José presented the prizes on behalf of his family. Afterwards

we finished with the usual good food and drink, thank you to Antonio, Norma and all the staff for looking after us. The football card was won by Alan Shields with Hibs raising €40 for our chosen charities of 2020. spot overall with 112. His round included a ‘2’ on the par 4 eighth, worth 5 points, but he won nothing as he doesn’t partake in this little side line wager! Marleen Billen took today’s runners up place with 42 points but it was not enough to get her onto the overall leader board. Following his 41 in round two Trevor Pullyblank posted 40 points to take third place on the day and the overall title with 114. There were two ‘2’s that did count today, one going to Bryan Neal and the other (wait for it)…

……me! Overall Graham Murray secured the bronze medal with a combined total score of 108. A very enjoyable week’s competition had by all (well most) and with the Pairs Matchplay just around the corner those that didn’t do quite as well as they would have hoped will have the chance to redeem themselves. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

After Wednesday’s game we saw no less than seven players with a total score of over 70 points. With 74, four players, Graham Murray, Lindsay Forbes, Friedel Knebel and Trevor Pullyblank were sharing the lead. Mark Western won on the day with 41 points on countbackfrom Trevor. Reg Akehurst and Nigel Price took the next two places both with 39. Well done to Marleen Billen, Terry Field and Liz Robertson on achieving a ‘2’. Friday and it was ‘Judgement Day’. With an outrageous 45 points Mike Mahony took the spoils on the day and, out of nowhere, into the runner’s up

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Well then. 25 minutes in and I am penning my ode to Jose Mourinho and how Tottenham can start dreaming of a proper run at the Premier League title. 3-0 up, cruising. Bring Gareth Bale on with 20 minutes to go and the Hammers go and steal a draw. There I am, crossing out all references to David Moyes being banished back to the sofa. Anything to do with Spurs looking like one of Mourinho’s finest Chelsea creations deleted probably never to see the light of day. As electric as Tottenham were in the first 20 minutes, they were insipid in the final 20. Was it the Bale circus? Did they see him come on for his second debut, see him nail his first free-kick on target and assume it was job done? Either way, Lanzini hasn’t hit a ball that well in a few years and Davinson Sanchez would not be able to score with such a deft header at the right end. A clean-sheet and Spurs would have had me writing about how they could win the league. Imagine that. Note to self - never, ever let my guard slip like that again. What actually happened? Who better than Jose himself to explain - “football”. That’s right, football happened. More likely to win the title are Everton, and they will have been pleased to escape the Merseyside derby with a point. Given their respective performances, I’d suggest to Carlo Ancelotti that he picks VAR to play in goal ahead of Jordan Pickford next week - far less likely to give away needless penalties and probably

equally likely to make a mistake or five each weekend so what’s the harm? Heading into this match, people were suggesting that it might be the first Merseyside clash to feature two rushkeepers given the current form of Everton’s custodian and his opposite number in Adrian. King Kloppo is, as he loves to remind us, a big advocate of VAR as long as the decisions are correct - unlike the bizarre offside call given to rule out Jordan Henderson’s late, late winner (or so we thought). As concerning as people sat in front of a video unable to see things behind a line to Klopp was the challenge that went in on big Virgil. Everyone knows Pickford fancies himself as a bit of an outfield player, and with tackles like that he’d certainly not look out of place in the National League. As for Richarlison, you know what you are going to get. It was far from surprising to see the Everton striker lying prone on the deck as the referee showed him the red card given that is where he spends at least 75% of each match. The real shock was that he stayed on his feet long enough to dive in two-footed on Liverpool’s Thiago. Had Yerry Mina attacked the ball with so much force, maybe Mo Salah wouldn’t have notched his 100th goal for the Premier League champions. Chelsea are lots of fun to watch at the moment, right? Unless you are an actual Chelsea fan, I suspect. It was good to see Kepa get an early chance to rebuild his confidence after Frank Lampard bombed him out for Mendy and given his knee-slide past Kurt Zouma’s back-pass most Chelsea fans still believe Benjamin Mendy would be a better shout in goal.

SMGS at La Serena A good turnout for the second golfing day of Mick Roscoe’s captaincy, with 35 members and 4 guests making their way to a course not played for some time. La Serena is a little like Las Ramblas, you either quite like it or hate it (unlike Ramblas where you either love it or say you will never go back but do!). The 16 holes with water were not enough to deter many from some excellent scoring, with two outstanding returns. Steve Hart’s 42 points just pipped Alan MacDonald’s 41, the latter’s recent stay in the UK clearly having given him time to forget golf and simultaneously improve his game. There are a few of us who maybe could do with adopting the same strategy! Unusually scoring across all three categories was very even, with none of the main prize winners doing worse than 36 points. However, we still had a much contested Abacus. Captain Mick Roscoe was sure he had landed the rather good bottle of Jumilla on offer, but was beaten on countback by first time Abacus winner Anne Reilly. The standout nearest the pin went to Neil Oliver who, on the stroke index one par three, missed a hole in one by no

more than a foot. The day’s winners were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd Mike Kaylor (36 on CB), 2nd Neil Oliver (36 on CB), and 1st Alan MacDonald with an excellent 41 points. Silver Category: 3rdKyrreSkarsmoen (36 on CB), 2nd Roddy Duncan (36 on CB), and first, with the day’s best score, Steve Hart with a superb42 points. Gold Category: 3rd Keith Little (37 on CB), 2nd Tony Smale (37 on CB) and 1st Michael Lausch with 38 points. Nearest the pins (sponsored by Mick Roscoe’s Property Shop): Hole 3 Neil Oliver, Hole 9 Yvonne Davies, Hole 15 Dave Rowe, Hole 17 Keith Little. Abacus: Anne Reilly Best Guest Winner: Mike Jeroen Our thanks go to all La Serena staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at El Valle.Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Mick Roscoe a call on 649226955.

Before the match, pundits galore were writing off Timo Werner and Kai Havertz as not being able to adapt to ‘the greatest league in the world’ so it was rather fitting that the German duo shared the three goals between them Werner scoring a couple of beauties before laying on the third for his international teammate. But their defending, wow. Champions League places aren’t won by shipping three at home to Southampton when you’ve led three times. And yes, you can remind me of that when Lampard is dancing to the tune of sneaking into fourth place in May. ‘Lads, go and play like Spurs played against us’ said Ole before United’s match against Newcastle. Ever the loyal disciples, the Manchester United players obeyed and found themselves 1-0 after a matter of minutes - Luke Shaw clearly doing whatever he can to be put out of his ‘playing professional football misery’ by toe-poking one past David de Gea after 90 seconds. And, just like Spurs, that woke United up sufficiently to put on quite a good performance - Solskjaer’s lot walking off 4-1 winners at the end. Fair play to Harry Maguire for not hiding behind that pulled hamstring picked up moments before he got himself sent off for England in the week - football’s most out-of-form defender picked himself up and even went as far as heading United’s equaliser. Marcus Rashford continued to drag his team forward, ably supported by Bruno Fernandes who looked like a player once more given he wasn’t having to carry Paul Pogba on his back for the game. Manchester City and Arsenal were supposed to put on a thriller - and failed, miserably. Sergio Aguero was so happy

to be back on a pitch he was putting his arm around anyone and everyone. Peppy G and Mikel did everything they could to out-tactic each other and in the end it was a damp-squib of a 1-0 City victory. That makes it 72 consecutive away matches to a top-six rival that Arsenal have failed to win - and yes, 72 might be wildly exaggerated. Given the utter lack of needle in many other ‘derby’ matches with no fans, it was truly refreshing to see Crystal Palace and Brighton show their utter contempt for each other throughout their clash on Sunday. Tariq Lamptey must be a damn-sight stronger than he looks on TV for Michy B’s knees to buckle in such fashion and Uncle Roy’s tactic of telling Wilf it was nearly January must have worked as Zaha tucked away the penalty. But, yet again, this was a performance from Brighton that was very, very good but, ultimately, equally over-rated as they failed to really hurt Palace in the box - well, if you don’t include Lewis Dunk’s attempt to two-foot the ball over the line following a late goalmouth scramble. Fulham versus Sheffield United was exactly the kind of game a £14.99 payper-view was designed for and the game was, as expected, dire fare only improved by a cracking goal from Ademola Lookman and the kind of performance from Mitrovic that immediately gets filed under ‘had better days’. Everyone’s favourite Sunday night drinking game was in full force when Aston Villa went to Leicester. Everytime Jack Grealish was fouled, you had to neck a shot. Trust me, lots of inebriated people by half time.

Fluffed Golden Opportunities for the Alaves, Elche's CF Opposition La Liga games resumed this weekend after the 2 week International break. This rest time was well spent by the Elche CF team at La Finca Golf Resort and Spa in Algorfa, consolidating their stragatgy and absorbing their final players into this seasons squad. These included the left footed centre back Diego Gonzalez from Malaga, Emiliano Rigoni from Zenit de San Petersburgo and Iván José Marcone on loan from Boca Juniors. However, behind the scenes it was a difficult time for the office staff as several of them tested positive for Covid 19. We wish them all a speedy recovery. On Saturday evening the team travelled the 750km to Alaves by plane. Despite scoring only 1 goal in 3 games they started in 15th place out of the 20 La Liga teams, and this is after playing 2 less matches than most of the other teams. They kicked off their 4th match since their return to La Liga in their new away kit; red and blue to reflect the colours of the Elche Flag with, what I like to call, warning chevrons (the Hummel logo) down both arms and one leg! Elche CF came out strong and created some great chances during the first half. They had their first goal after just 20 minutes, but sadly Fidel was ruled off side by VAR. On 22 minutes Edgar Badia executed another one of his magnificent saves to deny Alaves the lead. Just seconds later Alaves fluffed a golden opportunity. Rodrigo Ely, on loan from AC Milan, headed the ball wide infront of

an open goal. On 38 minutes, a shot from Elche's Pere Milla, the man who scored the promotion winning goal back in August, hit the back of the net. It was, after a short pause, ruled as onside by VAR. They went into their half time team talk 0-1 up. Alaves started the second half by missing another golden opportunity. The chance was squandered from close range and sailed high over the bar. 15 minutes later there was another golden opportunity for the home team from a well executed give and go move, only for the chance to be squandered, once again. On 75 minutes Elche's Pere Milla had a golden opportunity which rattled the post but fell just wide. This was quickly followed by another fluffed golden opportunity for Alaves as Joselu received the ball only yards in front of the goal but sent it centimetres over the bar. On 86 minutes #11 Tete Morente secured Elche's lead as he slid the ball across the goal face to the back of the net! Just 3 minutes of injury time, the ref's whistle went and Elche CF have another 3 points.

Elche CF finish the week in 12th position. Next match is against 13th placed Valencia at 21:00 on Friday 23rd October. This will be broadcast on the Spanish Terstitial Gol Channel. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF.
