New State of Alarm and night curfew underway See Main Advert on page 30-31

Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sรกnchez approved a new state of alarm with the intention of extending it for as long as 6 months, until May 9th 2021. This new state of alarm will have an initial validity of 15 days and establishes, among other measures, a nightly

curfew. The majority of Spain's autonomous communities requested that a State of Alarm be decreed by Government in order to allow them to impose the curfew and a raft of other new restrictions.

The curfew is obligatory nationwide, but autonomous communities will have the option to begin the night time restriction of movement forward or back by an hour. The curfew begins at Continued on page 3

Local rescue centre goes international

Unions criticise use of interim police in Rojales

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has gone international. After months of hard work and support the Rescue Centre is officially registered and recognised as a charity in Switzerland - and the Easy Horse Care Rescue Switzerland is now operational. This means fundraising can be carried out for the charity in Switzerland with horses being re-homed there. As awareness and support grows the aim is to form a dedicated stables in the country. The news comes at a time when the Rescue Centre needs more support and funds than ever, with over 120 horses, ponies and donkeys housed at the Rojales Rescue Centre. Co-founder Sue Weeding cannot contain her excitement at what the future could now hold for the animals she, and her husband Rod, care for so passionately. Sue said: “Now, because we have a branch of Easy Horse Care in Switzerland it will enable us to re-home many horses from Spain to a good place. Switzerland is financially secure, they have grass, clean air, very good animal welfare laws and we feel incredibly lucky and honoured to be given this opportunity to create an association in Switzerland. e are very excited about it because we know we will now be able to help many more horses in the future.”

‘Acting’ officers of the Rojales Local Police are going out on patrol along with regular police officers who are licensed to carry weapons – a move that has been slammed by union representatives. Usually, active police patrols and surveillance is restricted to officers who carry a weapon, while trainees carry out administrative tasks or regulate traffic. However, due to a lack of officers in the municipality of Rojales, acting officers are out on duty unarmed which is not legal. The Professional Union of Local Police and Firefighters (SPPLB), has sent a letter to the socialist Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez, denouncing this serious situation. The union has evidence that on several occasions trainee officers are patrolling together with fully licensed Local Police officers. As the acting officers do not carry a weapon, the Valencian Community Police Coordination Law does not allow them to carry out citizen security tasks. The SPPLB, say this is therefore a "violation" of the law which "seriously endangers

Jasmin and Sue with Lawrence

One such horse who is already on his way to a new life in Switzerland is Lawrence. Rescued by Sue and Rod, his story inspired Jasmin Imfeld. She went to the centre for a working holiday, an initiative which was extremely successful before the pandemic attracting people from all over the world. Jasmin fell in love with what she was doing and with Lawrence and has been at the forefront of helping set up the association in her home country of Switzerland. Jasmin will now act as President of Easy Horse Care Rescue Switzerland. Sue said: “When you rescue you have to ensure that the animal is safe and secure for the rest of its life and that is

why we are so excited about this project.” Home checks will be carried out in Switzerland and the association reserves the right to take the animal back if they feel it is not being cared for correctly. The signing of the paperwork could not have come at a more apt time as Sue and Rod celebrated the 12th anniversary of the Rescue Centre, which was formed on 23rd October, after they rescued a horse called Luceiro. Since then, they have never looked back and have dedicated their lives, home and personal finances to helping horses. Now, with the Rescue Centre going international, the next 12 years are looking very positive.

both the security of the career officer and that of the acting agent”. In addition, they lack of experience in matters of citizen security such as robberies, assaults on homes or premises, fights, attacks or gender violence. According to the union, many of the interim officers are assigned to night shifts "where 100 percent of the situations are citizen security". The lack of police officers in the municipality is another of the police union's complaints. In Rojales, a municipality with more than 18,000 inhabitants, there are only 14 career officers who can carry out citizen security tasks and the team is completed with 9 interim agents. There is also one officer on secondment, four on long-term sick leave, one in a secondary activity, an inspector and a chief. In addition, the SPPLB highlights that the town has 8 more career police officers but that they are on commission in other municipalities. The result is that there are only 14 officers available to cover six shifts highlighting a severe lack of experienced officers in the town.

Young homeless man found dead

U3A Meeting Cancelled

The body of a 28 year old homeless man was discovered on the Paseo de Punta Margallo in Torrevieja. A pedestrian raised the alarm early on Thursday morning when he saw the body lying motionless on a mattress next to one of the access points to the rocky beach.

The U3A contacted the Costa Blanca People this week with a cancellation notice, following the new state of alarm decree. A spokesperson for the group said, “We regret to advise that following the new changes to Covid regulations the Torrevieja U3A have had to CANCEL the meeting programmed for 30th OCTOBER at LOS ANGELES. This is greatly regretted but is outside of our control. Please check our website or FB page for updates.”

Age Concern Volunteer Appeal Age Concern needs 2 volunteer drivers to cover Monday mornings. Must have a Spanish Licence. Please contact 966786887 for an appointment.

The health services, Guardia Civil and Local Police arrived to the scene, but the young man had already passed away and all they could do was verify the death. In that area, there are several mattresses and blankets that serve as an impromptu housing settlement for homeless people who spend the night there or sleep on the beach itself.

Continued from page 1 11pm, but in the Valencian Community, authorities have decided it will begin at midnight. Citizens are asked to remain in their homes until 6am. The only exception is the Canary Islands, which has the lowest Covid-19 figures in all of Spain. The Canaries will be exempt from the curfew in a bid to help the tourism sector there. The curfew in the rest of Spain is in place until November 9th, but Valencian Community President Ximo Puig will be extending the measure here until December 9th. Under the state of alarm, the regions will also be allowed to restrict movement in and out of their own territories (unless for essential reasons such as work or healthcare appointments). In the past, regions bordering Madrid had been looking for ways to implement this, in order to close their borders to a neighbouring area with high numbers. Up until now, this was impossible to bring about but under the new state of alarm, the regions are allowed to close their borders. Spain’s national border will not close, as was the case during the first state of alarm back in March. Other measures now in place limit groups of people to six, in public and in private. Eating or drinking at a bar is not allowed, patrons must be seated at a table for service. The government has assured citizens that it does not intend to

return to a total lockdown, the kind we saw in March, but it is hoped that the night time curfew will bring infection rates down. It is estimated that nearly a third of all transmissions are occurring at social events in people’s homes. The closure of nightclubs and late drinking establishments, and the requirement of pubs to close early, has not worked as many people were continuing to party in their own homes after last orders. Parks and outdoor spaces will be closed at 10pm at night. In addition, the Generalitat Valenciana recommends postponing family events that are not urgent and limiting social activity as much as possible. Curfew rules The curfew rules mean that citizens are not allowed out between midnight and 6am, except: if you have to go to work, or are returning to your

residence after work during the hours of curfew; if you are caring for an elderly or underage dependant, or a person with a disability; or for another justifiable cause. Cars, taxis and other public service vehicles are allowed on the roads for the transfer of persons under the aforementioned exceptional circumstances, or to refuel. Night time waste collection and urban cleaning vehicles are also allowed on the roads during curfew. Authorities are already issuing fines for those breaking curfew. For example, Elche police issued 104 denuncias during the first night of curfew. 49 people were fined for not wearing masks, 55 people were booked for civil disobedience (mostly, consuming alcohol in public which is not allowed under current rules). 24 people were fined for being in groups numbering more than six.

Orihuela City Council sells the Palace of Justice to the Generalitat The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana and the Councillor for Heritage and Finance, Rafael Almagro, have agreed the sale of the Orihuela Palace of Justice building, together with the Minister of Justice, Gabriela Bravo and the Minister of Finance. The agreement reached between the City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana has concluded with the deed of sale by both parties, which includes the sale of said building for a total of 4,766,532 euros. From this amount, the amount of 150,000 euros that the Department of Justice has paid

during the last two years has been deducted, after the agreement reached in November 2017. The Generalitat Valenciana will make the payment for the sale of the Palace of Justice in four annual payments in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, explained the mayor of Orihuela. Bascuñana has highlighted "the good disposition and institutional harmony on the part of the two ministries to resolve this issue that has been entrenched for so many years, which we already managed to resolve in 2017 and which we

now culminate with this sale." The mayor of Orihuela recalled the importance of "maintaining this collaboration with the Generalitat to solve other needs that we have in Orihuela and in the Vega Baja that have dragged on since the DANA." For her part, the Minister of Justice, Gabriela Bravo, said: “From now on we are going to work with the City Council to obtain the transfer of the land necessary for the expansion of the Orihuela judicial headquarters and to provide it with the necessary spaces and services.”

Orihuela to spend 27,000€ on two sculptures The Orihuela government team plans to approve in the plenary session this week a purchase credit of 27,011 euros for the acquisition of two sculptural pieces in homage to the victims of the September 2019 DANA, and the other to those of the coronavirus. In addition, the budget includes three reproductions of Romanesque sculptures. The local government, a coalition between the PP and Cs, plans to approve this extraordinary credit, which was not

included in the budgets which have been extended since 2018. The mayor, Emilio Bascuñana (PP), will take the proposal to the information commission prior to the plenary session, where PP and Cs have a majority. The initiatives come from the Department of Heritage, led by the PP Councillor Rafael Almagro. Mayor Bascuñana justifies the approval of the extra-ordinary loan in which these initiatives "cannot be delayed until the next fiscal year", which are "priority" and of "great social interest".

With the award of 27,011 euros, the Department of Heritage plans to acquire the two sculptural pieces, made by a renowned sculptor, commemorating the victims of two biggest events to affect the municipality in recent history. The local government also plans to approve another extraordinary credit due to the court ruling that obliges the City Council to pay 98,134 euros to the owners of a plot in Arneva for its expropriation, plus 2,420 euros for procedural costs.

Anticancer drug is breakthrough Covid treatment A medication normally used to treat cancer is proving so successful among Covid-19 patients that more than eight in 10 of them are able to be discharged from hospital within two weeks. Still in the final phase of clinical trials, Aplidin has been used to treat 24 participating patients in Spain so far, and researchers say the viral load 'dropped drastically' after the first week in practically all of them. Patients who had been admitted to 13 hospitals because of the severity of the virus were, in '80 percent to 90 percent of cases', able to go home within 14 days, and a third of the total – 37 percent - were discharged after just one week. “The evolution [of the virus, treated with Aplidin] has been magnificent,” says Dr José Barberán, specialist in infectious and contagious diseases at HM Hospital Montepríncipe. “None of the patients treated has died, and practically all of them have been able to go home.” Aplidin is an anti-tumour medication based on the molecule known as plitidepsine which, scientists have found, reduces the C-Reactive Protein (PCR) in adult patients with Covid-19 where their symptoms are bad enough that they need to be hospitalised. It was originally designed to halt tumour growth and spread, but is proving to be capable of doing the same with the virus. Patients were split into three groups of eight, and each group given a different dose – of 1.5mg, 2mg and 2.5mg – per day for the first three days, the initial phase of the condition, which is when the virus multiplies the most within the system. Their viral load was then tested, firstly

upon starting the treatment, then on days four, seven, 15 and 30. It had fallen considerably between days four and seven – by up to 50% in most cases – and by 70% at day 15 in those who still had any at all. Over 90% of patients included in the trials started out with 'medium to high' viral loads. Nobody was discharged in less than a week, since Covid procedures dictate that any patient admitted has to stay in

drug Dexametasone, which has proven to be effective in the second week of the disease when inflammation starts to occur, caused by the patient's own immune system responding in an outof-control fashion to the virus. The trials are sponsored by the Spanish bio-pharmaceutical firm PharmaMar, whose clinical director José Jimeno says he is in talks with the relevant authorities about extending them to a wider group of patients.

hospital for a minimum of seven days. Falling viral loads were also associated with a general improvement, clinically, and with the pneumonia that had resulted in some of the patients disappearing, as well as a reduction in inflammation. By day 30, none of the patients treated with Aplidin had developed any Covid symptoms. The doses given are 'very safe', say researchers – cancer patients who take Aplidin receive 'vastly higher amounts', and about 1,300 of these have been studied in past Aplidin trials. If the results of the final phase of the trials are as hoped for, it could be that the use of Aplidin will complement existing treatment, such as the corticoid

Quick roll out If all goes to plan, Aplidin is hoped to be authorised very quickly for general use in Covid patients by the Spanish Medications and Healthcare Products Agency (AEMPS), which is responsible for signing off drugs for specific purposes before they are able to hit the market or be employed in hospitals. PharmaMar is also in parallel talks with the USA's Food and Drugs Agency (FDA), the North American country's equivalent to the AEMPS, to enable the trials to extend across the pond. At present, the trials are taking place in 13 hospitals across the Greater Madrid region, Castilla-La Mancha and Catalunya – three of the regions which have been among the worst affected by Covid-19. Unfortunately, some side effects are inevitable, but although unpleasant, they are not dangerous – most of the patients who experienced adverse reactions suffered nausea, vomiting or both. But researchers are expecting that the drug may even prevent some of the longer-term effects of Covid-19 typically suffered some weeks or even months after the patient is cured.

Irish crime boss arrested in Costa Blanca drug raid Notorious Irish crime boss John Gilligan has been arrested in Spain after an international drug trafficking investigation. The 68 year old was arrested on Friday after a joint operation between Spanish, Irish and UK police in which a total of six people, including Gilligan, were arrested. During the raid which apparently took place at Gilligan’s own residence, officers from the National Police seized four kilograms of cannabis, 15,000 pills, a large quantity of cash, documents and mobile phones, which police believe are linked to drug trafficking. A gun was also found, buried in the garden, and the National Police made specific reference in a statement that it will be investigated whether this gun, a Colt Python revolver, is the same weapon used to murder Irish journalist Veronica Guerin in Dublin in the late 90s. Dramatic footage of the raid was posted to the National Police Twitter account (the video can also be viewed on the Costa Blanca People Facebook page) showing Gilligan lying face down on the kitchen floor while offers place him in handcuffs and lead him away. Officers are also seen searching the garden with a metal detector to find the gun, buried under rubble. In its statement, the National Police said that the gang, led by ‘a well-known Irish criminal’ sent marijuana and hypnotic drugs to the UK and Ireland by post. Police described those arrested as “part of a violent group of drug and arms traffickers.” In a series of simultaneous raids, which took place at the same time as

Gilligan’s arrest, a further four kilos of marijuana buds and 11,000 more pills were found. Police confirmed the investigation has been underway since last year when they discovered the gang activity in Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa. Once it was discovered who was at the helm of the organisation, Spanish officers contacted police forces in Ireland and the UK and thanks to international police cooperation, the rest of the gang members were also identified and placed under surveillance. John Gilligan was sentenced in 2001 to 28 years in prison - of which he served 17 after appealing the sentence - for

importing large quantities of hash to Ireland. Years later he was shot four times when he was at his brother's house, although he managed to recover from his injuries. Irish police had linked Gilligan’s organization to the 1996 murder of the well known journalist Guerin. However, he was acquitted of the murder after a 43-day trial at the Special Criminal Court. He was released from prison in 2013. Judge Diarmuid O'Donovan said at the time of the trial that there were "grave suspicions" about Gilligan's involvement in Ms Guerin's death, but said there was not enough evidence produced to bring about a conviction.

DOUBLE YOUR CHANCES OF SELLING BY CHANGING 1 THING

What type of vendor are you? During my many years of experience speaking with thousands of local property owners, I’ve come to notice there are different types of home sellers amongst us. Each vendor can be identified into 4 types of categories. 1. The emotional seller - “I must like my buyer, as I only want to sell to someone that will appreciate the blood, sweat and tears I’ve put into this home.” 2. The price setter - “I don’t care who buys, as long as they pay my price!” 3. The waiter - “I’m not in any hurry to sell, and if no one wants to meet my price, then I’m quite happy to wait!” 4. The realist - “I want my property sold for the best price, but also understand I have to be sensible when it comes time to negotiate.” Here’s why categories 1, 2 and 3 will decrease your chances of a sale in the current market: Emotional sellers are unable to negotiate a deal based on whether the price of the sale would work for them. They’re more of a heart ruling their head type of decision maker. Their feelings will make them

think it’s better to wait for a buyer they like before agreeing on a selling price. The price setter can become too focused on a number instead of looking at the bigger picture. They say things like, “if I sell at a certain price, I won’t be able to buy my next home.” Ultimately it’s the market that will determine the homes value. A property is only worth what someone is willing to pay. The waiter is a type of seller that has convinced themselves, if no buyer will pay their “above market value” asking price, they will wait for someone that will. They think for sure there’s someone out there that’ll love their home and pay their price. Bad news if you recognize yourself as being in categories 1, 2 or 3. These types of vendors are ruining their chances of selling. The market isn’t strong enough to be an emotional seller, a price setter or even a waiter. Selling a home as a “realist” means they appreciate the current market conditions. They understand that attaining the best price will happen as long as they are sensible when it comes to their asking price and negotiating an offer. Holding out for a buyer they like, a price that’s too high or someone that doesn’t even exist will decrease their chances of a sale dramatically. The good news is, if you see yourself within categories 1, 2 or 3 there’s only one thing to change to easily double your chances of selling!

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling was handed a huge boost this week by the resumption of talks between the UK and EU over a post-Brexit trade agreement. While last week’s deadline had come and gone with little fanfare in the FX market, the hardline stance of both parties, refusing to make concessions, was weighing heavily on the pound. It was a welcome relief for investors then when the EU’s Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier claimed on Wednesday that a deal was close, sending the pound out in front of the other major currencies. Talks subsequently resumed, dampening the fears of many who believed they’d been staring down the barrel of a no deal Brexit. While the euphoria was slightly short-lived, sending the pound to the back of the pack on Thursday, sterling still enjoyed an average gain of 0.5% for the week with no losses. Wednesday’s good news was compounded by the Bank of England’s Deputy Governor Ramsden quashing fears that the Bank would introduce negative interest rates. While August had seen BoE Governor Bailey raise the prospect of negative rates, this week Ramsden declared that although they may be used in future, “the time is not right now”. Economic data from the UK did not get in the way of the Brexit breakthrough this week, either. It was another strong month for residential property, with Rightmove reporting monthly and annual rises of 1.1% and 5.5%, respectively, for the house price

index. Inflation climbed back up to 0.5% in September, following the conclusion of the Eat Out to Help Out subsidy. While public sector borrowing was worse than expected, it wasn’t enough to knock the pound off course. Meanwhile retail figures for September had a neutral effect, ahead of forecast MoM and behind YoY. EURO There wasn’t much data on offer to help the euro out this week, as economic figures and appearances by president Christine Lagarde took a backseat to the Brexit developments that had helped out the pound. The limited economic releases on show saw German consumer confidence “fading noticeably”, while panEurozone inflation figures slowed to -0.3%. Lagarde did briefly expand upon the discord within the EU 27 over how to distribute the agreed-upon €750 billion recovery fund. None of this conspired to offer much to investors, however they were interested in the EU’s first collective issue of debt. Tied to the Covid recovery plan, €17 billion of “Coronabonds” went on sale with maturities of 10 and 20 years. The demand outweighed the supply 14-fold, with total bids reaching €233 billion and seeming to assure demand at future auctions. However, even this wasn’t enough to lift the euro out of an unremarkable week, leaving it on average unchanged.

Spanish pupils 'one of world's most accepting' of foreigners and different cultures Spanish teenagers are among the most 'respectful and accepting' of other cultures and nationalities in the world, scoring well above the average for developed countries as a whole, according to the latest PISA study. Criticisms of the annual Global Competence 'health check' on compulsory education about how it only evaluated academic achievement – in maths, literacy and sciences – and overlooked other 'hugely important' and more qualitative, social issues have borne fruit, and now, the PISA study takes into account attitudes towards migration, including culture, religion, languages, countries of origin, and their views on rights and integration. Spain scored 512 points – 13 more than the average for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which covers all developed and some emerging nations on earth. It was only beaten by Canada (554) and the UK (534), although several regions in Spain scored higher than the national average: Castilla y León came out top with 534 points, Asturias with 527 and Cantabria with 526. In the latest PISA study, researchers asked: “Are students ready to prosper in an interconnected world?” Responses, as every year, are

those of 15-year-olds, but the data can be easily extrapolated to other age groups and does not just mean only pupils aged 15 are respectful and accepting of other cultures: The PISA presupposes that showing these attitudes a year before their compulsory schooling ends means they must have developed over their childhood and early teens, and are likely to prevail from 16 onwards. Spanish pupils showed 'a significantly greater interest than the OECD average in learning about other cultures and respecting people with a different cultural background', although their attitudes were 'less positive' about other 'global issues' – undefined, but which could range from anything from world politics to capitalist systems, for example. They scored a +0.38 for 'respect towards people from other cultures' – one of the highest and

beating Canada's +0.3 and Scotland's +0.25. At the other extreme, Hungary was the least tolerant at -0.54, followed by Bulgaria at -0.51. Also, Spain achieved one of the highest scores in 'cognitive adaptability' – how able they are to 'remould' their thinking and behaviour to their cultural environment and to new ways and approaches – with +0.28. The lowest-scoring countries in this area were Slovakia (-0.26), Greece (-0.29) and Italy (-0.33). In general, girls scored higher than boys on 'attitudes towards immigration' – in all countries and regions, Spain included, with the exception of Hong Kong, Macao (China) and Vietnam. Spanish pupils' views were consistent with those of other countries and regions which had a long history of migration, the PISA study says.

Shop Local

CostaBlancaPeople 27th October - 1st November 2020

www.costablancapeople.com

SHOP LOCAL Last month, the Costa Blanca People launched our ‘Shop Local’ initiative, a campaign to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. So far, the campaign has been really well received among local business owners and it is encouraging to see so many businesses becoming advocates for the campaign by sharing the logo, supporting the initiative and voicing their support for fellow business owners in the area. Already, the campaign has had a positive impact with some of those displaying the logo already reporting that they have won new business this week as a direct result which is a wonderful result! We are seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic and believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. With local businesses still reeling from lockdown, this summer has been difficult for us all. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the winter months. Why have we launched this campaign? As the global pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to life on the Costa Blanca, we all need to do everything we possibly can to help our local economy bounce back stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve launched our Shop Local campaign. We want to engage in partnership with local

business leaders to give our towns, commercial centres, retailers, small businesses and charitable organisations a boost. We want to help businesses, shops, restaurants and entrepreneurs the support they need to continue to make the southern Costa Blanca a great place to live, work and socialise. How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal in your social media posts. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours. Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates - ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our

local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Making this campaign visible – on your social media (check our our ‘frame’ for your profile picture, search for ‘Shop Local Costa Blanca’ in frame options when you edit your profile picture to add a frame), in your window or place of business will help ensure it works and stays in the forefront of people’s minds. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Why shopping local works Shopping at local businesses puts money right back into the local economy, and by spending money in our local shops, restaurant, café or bar, we can all do our bit to help revive our local economy. Supporting our local businesses creates jobs in local communities. Helping to grow the number of jobs in our local areas makes for a better place to live and work, which then creates a healthy economy for the community here on the Costa Blanca. Small businesses are often run by people who live in or near our local community. As the southern Costa Blanca continues to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people may have missed.

It is so important, now more than ever, that we all help and support our local businesses in any way we can. Bars and restaurants are the heart of our community so please call in and see us. We have all the safety measures in place.

Charlies Sports Bar, Los Montesinos In these bad times with COVID 19 and not knowing what restrictions may come next it’s important to shop local , your local cafe bar or restaurant, local shops need your custom , if we can help our local businesses just a little then maybe it will help them to survive through these hard times. Keep safe and well and good luck to everyone. Graham and Janet, House Plus Homes Businesses are looking for all your help and support at this difficult times. Use us or lose us, it will be a shame for all us small businesses to have to close now after we have been here for so many years. - Second best boutique ladies and gents clothing agency

This Week´s Movie Picks The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Saturday 31st October – Channel 4, 7.45 pm The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel), and it's making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy, posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy Chambers (Richard Gere) and Lavinia Beech (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn Greenslade (Dame Judi Dench) and Douglas Ainslie (Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman Cousins (Ronald Pickup) and Carol Parr (Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge Hardcastle (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors.

Tomb Raider Sunday 1st November – ITV2, 7.40 pm Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) is the fiercely independent daughter of eccentric adventurer Lord Richard Croft (Dominic West), who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of twenty-one without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father's global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he's truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can't understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death. Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad's last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one.

Vega Baja Hospital provides a second floor for covid as patients skyrocket The situation at the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela has been described as "very complicated", according to sources from the Department of Health. Patients admitted with the virus have skyrocketed in recent days which has forced the hospital to activate its contingency plan and set up a second floor to accommodate coronavirus patients. There were 47 people admitted with Covid-19 to the regional hospital over just a few days last week, 12 of who are in

Intensive Care. The hospital wants to avoid a system collapse, so it has made the decision to refer patients with other pathologies, not covid, to other hospitals to allow more space for those infected by coronavirus. In addition, the hospital has decided to suspend operations that are non-urgent. Therefore, patients who had scheduled elective surgery - those non-urgent scheduled operations - will be contacted to inform them that they will have to wait

to be operated on. If the covid situation continues as it has been up to now, the hospital has the option to dedicate a third floor if necessary, as its contingency plan provides for all situations. In the case of the ICU the hospital can accommodate up to 21 beds, each with a respirator, necessary for patients with coronavirus. The concern regarding complete saturation at the Vega Baja Hospital has been discussed by the manager of the

Department of Health with the mayors of the 18 local municipalities that this hospital serves. The health authorities are very concerned about the latest outbreaks in the Vega Baja. Towns such as Algorfa, BenejĂşzar, Cox, Rafal, Jacarilla, Torrevieja and Orihuela, where since last Friday new restrictions from the Ministry of Health have limited the number of people in meetings and premises, have suffered more outbreaks in recent days. Most are

of social origin, but many of work and educational origin are also being detected. The average age of those infected has dropped alarmingly. For example, in Orihuela, 40 percent of the outbreaks detected are in people between the ages of 15 and 44, while in people over 65 it is 17 percent, according to the data that sparked the imposition of a series of restrictive measures in the locality for 14 days.

Sausage mummy dippers Ingredients Oil , for greasing 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp ketchup 2 tsp French's yellow mustard , plus a little extra to decorate 12 chipolatas Tube of 6 ready-to-roll croissant (look in the chiller cabinets near the pastry in the supermarkets Method STEP 1 Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and brush 2 baking trays with a little oil. Mix the honey, ketchup and mustard together in a bowl, then brush over the chipolata sausages. STEP 2 Unroll the croissant dough and divide into 3 rectangles. Pinch together the diagonal perforated seams, then cut into long thin strips – you should get about 16 per rectangle. STEP 3 Wind the little croissant strips around the chipolatas, leaving a little gap at one end to make a slit for the eyes. Place on baking trays and bake for 20 mins. Cool a little, then, using the

mustard, dot a pair of little yellow eyes on to each mummy. Serve warm with glow-inthe-dark goo (see goes well with, below) and/or your favourite dip.

Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil, plus 1 tsp 2 onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped Approx 800g chopped pumpkin flesh, plus the seeds 100g split red lentil ½ small pack thyme, leaves picked, plus extra to serve 1l hot vegetable stock pinch of salt and sugar 50g crème fraîche, plus extra to serve Method STEP 1 Heat the oil in a large pan. Fry the onions until softened and starting to

turn golden. Stir in the garlic, pumpkin flesh, lentils and thyme, then pour in the hot stock. Season, cover and simmer for 20-25 mins until the lentils and vegetables are tender. STEP 2 Meanwhile, wash the pumpkin seeds. Remove any flesh still clinging to them, then dry them with kitchen paper. Heat the 1 tsp oil in a non-stick pan and fry the seeds until they start to jump and pop. Stir frequently, but cover the pan in between to keep them in it. When the seeds look nutty and toasted, add a sprinkling of salt and a pinch of sugar, and stir well. STEP 3 Whizz the cooked pumpkin mixture with a hand blender or in a food processor until smooth, then add the crème fraîche and whizz again. Taste for seasoning. STEP 4 Serve with a spoonful of crème fraîche, a few thyme leaves and the toasted seeds scattered on top.

Spangles’ food bank donation Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus, the Rondalla Son del Mar Menor group and the Agrupación Coral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Los Alcázares held a joint concert back in March this year to raise much-needed funds for those affected by the Los Alcázares floods of September 2019. Having raised an amazing 1100€, the whole of Spain then went into Covid 19 lockdown and any presentation had to be put on hold. Although confined to their homes, Spangles found ways to keep active by making masks for local hospitals, having Zoom rehearsals, virtual happy hours, quizzes and making virtual videos. It was a joy to be given freedom of movement once more in June and Spangles was able to resume outdoor rehearsals at the wonderful Kinita Restaurant and Beach Club in San Javier, with stringent safety measures in place. Now that winter is creeping in, they have moved their rehearsals to the Olympia Pool & Garden Bar in Mil Palmeras, which has adequate indoor space, with good ventilation. Now, with the help of Aldi Supermarket in Los Alcázares, Lyn

Mawana club Orihuela Costa Just amazing is all I can say about my eating experience at Mawana Club Restaurant on the Orihuela Costa. I was lucky enough to watch JAY MARKWICK & NIKKI G presenting their new show at MAWANA called ECLISPE. A fantastic night of music and dance by four exceptional talented performers. Nikki G our power house singer had everyone enjoying her disco tunes like Carwash, while Jay Markwick and his beautiful dancers Jazmine Markwick and Chloe Sawyer showed us traditional Spanish Flememco , bachata and some beautiful heartfelt contemporary dance - a true delight to watch. Talk about the great energy in the room. During the fantastic show we were served with a choice of two menus. If you are coming to see a show then the menu choice is given to you at the time of booking. The food was spectacular, my complements to the chef! There is an open kitchen where you can see the team working together for our delicious food, my steak just melted in my mouth, the chocolate brownie was divine. I would highly recommend you to come to Mawana for a fantastic food experience. American whiskies that are not bourbon When it comes to American whiskey, the style you’re most likely to encounter is Bourbon – perhaps dressed up with bitters and a slice of orange in an Old Fashioned cocktail; sweetened and garnished with mint in a Julep; or simply served on the rocks. The spirit, distilled primarily from corn, is going through a post-lockdown boom among drinkers and bartenders looking to widen the choice of whisk(e)y on their shelves. But there are many more types of whiskey available across the pond and they’re all looking to follow in Bourbon’s success and gain a foothold in the UK. Each whiskey style has its own rules and regulations that determine what it can be called, with the volume of the main grain used being a key criteria. Straight Rye Whiskey (with at least 51 per cent rye in the mash bill) is the most commonly available outside of the Bourbon market, with the

rye’s spicy character making it a punchier choice for cocktails. But with a little more exploration you’ll also find whiskey made from malted barley – along the lines of our more familiar single malt whiskies – besides some that use less celebrated grains such as wheat, oats and millet. Westland garryana American single malt 2019 edition, 50% Seattle’s Westland distillery takes Scottish single malt traditions and reimagines them with local ingredients, including more than 20 varieties of barley. Garryana is a single malt, aged in sherry casks, then finished in casks made of the underexplored Garry oak, a tree native to American’s pacific north west. Creamy vanilla and honey flavours and textures, and a rich, dense fruitiness, have been spiked with spices and an almost smoky dry oak taste. In this whiskey, tradition meets modern American invention and the result is one to

savour. Available on Amzon. Whistlepig 10 year old cask straight rye, 58.5% This is a special edition straight rye, matured in Vermont, that has developed a richness of spicy and fruity flavours from its 10 years maturing in casks. Imagine big, juicy oranges bursting with flavour; cinnamon and dark chocolate sprinkled on a caramelcoated dessert; and deeper botanical notes of roots, bark and herbs and you’ll be somewhere close. But for the full myriad of flavours, we insist that you try this treat for yourself. Available online at The Whiskey Exchange. Jack Daniel’s old no. 7 Tennessee whiskey, 40% The world’s most popular American whiskey isn’t a bourbon, mainly because the makers of Jack Daniel’s would much rather it be called a Tennessee whiskey, arguing that its slow charcoal filtered, smooth sipping spirit has a unique taste all of its own. Although the brand has ventured into new flavour territories, including honey and apple editions, for maximum rock star credit it has to be the original no.7 and its mellow brown sugar, chocolate orange and charred spice flavours. Available for local retailers.

Chef shares curry making mistake A curry is the dinner of kings. Chicken curry, veggie curry, fish curry – they’re all incredible. And whilst, of course, we do love a takeaway, making a curry yourself at home is much more satisfying. However, it’s easy to make mistakes and end up with a pan of overly spicy tomato slop. And no one wants that.

mistake people make when whipping up a homemade curry - and more importantly, how to fix it.

Fear not though, because chef Monica Sawhney Haldar has shared the biggest

The chef says: “A tin of chopped tomatoes can make a curry for 12 to 15

Birds Eye fans have taken to social media to rejoice about the release of the brands first vegan versions of its famous chicken range. The frozen foods specialist has delighted shoppers with the announcement of its new chicken-free dippers, available from a selection of supermarkets in the UK from Novemebr and due for a Europe-wide roll out before Christmas.

Monica, who runs the Spice Club in Manchester, explained that adding too many tomatoes can take a curry from delicious to disastrous in one fell swoop.

people. A lot of people add it because it makes it look like a curry, but it just ends up diluting the flavour and you end up with something that just tastes spicy and very tomatoey.” Instead, Monica goes for four or five tablespoons of passata if she’s making a curry for four people. Monica also says that treating the onions incorrectly has a lot to do with a curry going to pot. “A lot of people don't spend time browning onions. So, they'll chuck the onions in the pan, sauté them for a couple of minutes, and then they'll start adding the other ingredients. “But really you should be spending 1015 minutes just on the onions, allowing the sugars to caramelise naturally, because that's what's going to add so much flavour to your curry.”

Posting on Twitter, social media users have revealed they're eager to try the new dippers, with many admitting they've already filled their freezer with the dippers, which are made from pea protein. The new range of veganfriendly foods from Birds Eye also includes Chicken-free Nuggets and Chicken-free Southern Fried Strips, made from a meat substitute that is rich in pea protein. Birds Eye which is famous for its Crispy Chicken Dippers, claim there hasn't been a suitable replacement for chicken before now, but insist they've managed to recreate the taste and texture of the dinnertime staple. Posting a photograph on social media of the dippers paired with vegetables and chips, the brand declared they're ideal for vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians.

Excited, one person wrote: 'Birds Eye making vegan chicken dippers is the best thing that's happened to me this year, I currently have three boxes in my freezer.' Another said: 'I will pay an obscene amount of money for someone in Leeds to drop me off a pack of the Birds Eye vegan chicken dippers because we didn't add any to our online shop' A third added: 'Can't explain how excited I am to try Birds Eye vegan chicken dippers' A fourth wrote: 'The dippers are so real it's scary! That's a good thing!' Anne-Marie Gayer who is the Senior Brand Manager at Birds Eye, said: 'We know families have enjoyed our great tasting chicken product range for generations, and our Chicken Dippers in particular are a firm favourite at dinner tables across the nation. 'But with more families than ever now cutting down on meat, we don't want anyone to miss out on the great taste. 'We have spent a long time perfecting a vegan recipe that offers the same delicious taste and texture of our iconic chicken pieces, and are confident that our new Green Cuisine Chicken-free range does just that – all powered by plants!'.

Harvest collection by local schoolchildren Children at Willow International Academy in Quesada collected a large quantity of non perishable food as part of the school’s Harvest Festival. The food will be donated to the local food bank which assists families in need in the area. Principal Amanda Riding said, “We had a great Halloween and Harvest themed day before we

broke up for half term. Primary students made slime and potions, whilst secondary drama students staged a Halloween themed room for primary students to play. I’d like to thank all of our parents and staff for your generous donations, we have collected a brilliant amount of food for people in need and I’ll be so proud to donate it on behalf of all of our students.”

At Willow, as well as the British curriculum, the school is also keen to develop the ‘whole child’ with a series of extracurricular activities such as this to ensure the children not only leave Willow with an international qualification, but also a social conscience and an awareness of the importance of being a good citizen.

Serial scammer arrested in Torrevieja National Police in Torrevieja arrested a serial fraudster who used the internet and social networks to commit crimes and who a few months ago broke through a police checkpoint in Alicante forcing officers to jump out of the way to avoid being run over. The fraudster, with 40 previous charges for similar crimes, was wanted by six courts in different provinces around Spain. The 31-year-old is accused of carrying out all kinds of scams through social networks and websites for the sale of secondhand items. The crimes allegedly committed by the man range

from everything from fictitious apartment rentals to the sale of products that never reached buyers. He not only deceived buyers, but is then alleged to have used their identities to create online bank accounts in order to request loans, receive money from other victims or to register telephone lines. On another occasion, according to the Police, he had been squatting in a property and tried to rent it to an unsuspecting couple. He collected a deposit and two months of rent in advance and when the tenants arrived, they realised had been conned.

They could not take the matter further because the fraudster had already disappeared. The Police also detected that he had offered high-end secondhand computer products for sale. The victims sent money but did not receive the computers. After he fled from police in Alicante, the man’s 22-year-old girlfriend continued running the scams and was arrested and released after giving a statement. The link with the girlfriend was what led officers to locate the scammer in Torrevieja, where officers found mobile phones and cards in the names of several victims as well as several laptops.

Deadly lung cancer curable Scientists in Spain have developed a form of treatment for a 'lethal' type of lung cancer which has made it curable in many cases, and doubled survival rates. According to the report in The Lancet Oncology, research by the Spanish Lung Cancer Group (GECP) has found that a 'different approach' to treatment is producing positive results. Survival rates for the strain of lung cancer in question have historically been very low indeed, and treatment has typically involved surgery followed by chemotherapy. But over two years, researchers treated patients with an immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy before operating, and found that during this period, 89.9 percent survived, and in 77 percent, the cancer did not progress. In fact, nearly two-thirds – 63.4 percent - were cancer-free after the drug treatment and surgery. With the usual method – operation followed by chemotherapy – only around 30 percent of patients were still alive after three years, with rarely more than 20 percent surviving for longer, says the GECP. Its scientists stress that the drug combination they have used is 'completely safe'. Only three in 10 patients experienced side-effects, and in all cases, these did not interfere with the surgical process.

Will I ever meet anyone? Giving drug treatment before surgery allows oncologists to target the specific makeup of the tumour and start building up the body's 'immune memory' at an earlier stage, which increases defences long-term. They targeted patients whose cancer was at a 'medium stage' – operable, but having already spread to the nearby lymph nodes, albeit not to any other organs. The CEGP says lung cancer is usually diagnosed when it is 'locally advanced', meaning it is generally considered 'terminal', in broad terms, since 'likely longterm survival is very limited'. Until now, it says, research has focused on very advanced stages of lung cancer, meaning 'there has been no progress in the last 20 years'. “The NADIM study is the first worldwide research project that has analysed the benefits (viability, safety, efficiency and survival rates) of administering

immunotherapy and chemotherapy to patients with lung cancer at early or locallyadvanced stages before surgery,” the Lancet report reads. Some of the problems scientists have found over the last decades – and which holds back research into lung cancer – is its public stigma, meaning funding rarely comes via donations. Spain's main cancer research and care organisation, the AECC, says the general attitude among those who perhaps would otherwise donate to research is that in the case of lung cancer, it is 'the patient's own fault for smoking'. But the AECC and CEGP have stressed that not all lung-cancer sufferers’ smoke or have even ever smoked, even though the habit dramatically increases the risk. And research into lung cancer does not just benefit the patient, smoker or non-smoker: Family and friends of those diagnosed also want to see a cure found.

I decided to try dating sites on the internet. I have met up with one or two men I had deemed suitable, but very quickly it became clear that they only wanted a quick liaison, and I also suspected they were not single but were just looking for something on the side. When I said this was not what I was looking for they disappeared in a puff of smoke. I am in my 60s and divorced, and am beginning to give up hope of ever meeting a single man. A friend of mine told me I was coming across as too desperate, which upset me. I still look on the dating sites and recently got a message from a man who I recognised as someone who had contacted me before on another site, and was using the exact same text he has used before. I am feeling quite despondent and wretched, but I find I am becoming a bit obsessed with dating sites; at first it’s a thrill that someone is interested, and then it becomes all too apparent that they are conmen. I am sorry you are having a difficult time finding someone nice to date. It is difficult in our later years to find someone, and while dating sites have their place, they can be full of fraudsters so ladies, and gents too need to be careful. Have you thought of joining a club specifically for singletons? It is much better to meet real people. Even if you don’t gel with someone right away, you will make new friends, and this should be the intention you go with rather than appearing too desperate. Try new hobbies like amateur dramatics, or a choir. It is important not to focus too much on finding a mate but to have fun.

European Tyre Safety Ratings In 2012, the European Union made moves to implement new rules on the labelling of tyres for sale. Much like washing machines or fridges, and even properties for sale, an easy indication of the tyre´s characteristics would be displayed on the label, enabling the buyer to choose their product based on such elements as efficiency, safety rating and noise. The information on the tyre label included roll resistance, graded from “A” which is the best performance, to a “G” rating, the lower end of the scale in tests. Tyres with a higher resistance increase the workload of the engine, in turn leading to higher fuel costs. Adherence to wet surfaces was also a graded factor on the label, once again graded “A” to “G”, with “A” showing the best performance. Across the spectrum of the rating scale, the braking distance between a grade “A” and a grade “G” tyre may be as much as 18 metres, significantly reducing the chance of avoiding a collision in the event of having to brake in wet weather. Of course, driving skills and ability can also allow for more compensation by increasing the distance between you and the vehicle in front, for example. Noise level is also included in the tyre rating, again, this can be determined by other factors such as the road itself. In many places, so called “quiet tarmac” has

been installed to reduce noise, but the tyre noise rating is based on an average. In a bid to further reduce the environmental impact of vehicles on the roads, the sale of poorly performing tyres has been outlawed. The sale of tyres which are in the “F” category for roll resistance, and which are intended for use on passenger cars and vans, have been prohibited. Roll resistance directly influences fuel consumption of the vehicle, and therefore, its pollutant emissions, especially that of greenhouse gases. The lower the resistance, the lower the consumption and, according to the Tyre Manufacturers Commission, "up to 20% of fuel consumption is related to this factor."

According to Jose Luis Rodriguez, president of the Commission, "the prohibition to sell these less efficient tyres in the European market highlights again the informative work and the protection of the consumer interests of the tyre Label". The sale of "G" rated tyres, in other words the least efficient, was already outlawed in 2014. The Professional Organization of Tire Specialists (OPEN) insists that tyres are the vehicle's only contact with the road. They ensure that the adherence and direction that the vehicle travels in is the one desired by the user and also cushions imperfections of the road. At the same time, they insist on the need for adequate maintenance of the tyre, including pressure and depth.

According to a study by the University of Edinburgh on vehicle gases, it was stated that 2/3 of the particles emitted by a vehicle are due to tyres, vehicle maintenance and roads. OPEN underlines that "the use of efficient tyres could represent a decrease of 50 litres per 10,000 kilometres in the use of fuel. There is a transitional period for garages which have stock of these Class “F” tyres, in that those manufactured before November 1, 2018, may still be sold for a period of 30 months, i.e. up until May 1, 2021.

When buying new tyres, always check the labelling system to ensure you know the quality of the tyres to be installed on your vehicle. Poor quality may increase risk and with tyre safety, compromise if not an ideal agenda.

How do men and women move around the city? other hand, prefer the private vehicle. During the day, 54% of women walk. At night, that percentage drops to 26%. Regarding night trips, the number of women using the car or motorcycle increased: they went from 41% during the day to 47% at night. Men and women do agree in resorting to the taxi at night, although more women than men: 44%, women; 31%, men. By the way, 60% of women

state that they change their mobility habits for safety reasons. In men, that percentage is 30%. Furthermore, 57% of women admit that personal safety is an influencing factor in deciding which means of transport to use. Only 32% of men take it into account. They coincide in pointing to the car, the bus, and the taxi as the safest means during the day. As for the most insecure, they mainly point to the bicycle and, later, the motorcycle and the subway. Instead, they target personal

mobility vehicles, bicycles, and motorcycles. Mobility Survey in Madrid The RACC and Zurich study has focused on Madrid, on two interchanges (Plaza de Castilla and Moncloa).1,517 people (754 women and 763 men) were asked by telephone in February 2020. In addition, during the months of January and February, 17,584 personal safety behaviours were observed in public transport, distributed as follows: 3,097 people who used the day bus; 2,825 went by night bus, and 11,662, by metro (on three Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and from 12:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.). The study also highlights some conclusions from the Mobility Survey carried out in Madrid in 2018.44% of men use a private vehicle in their daily trips, while women mainly go on foot (36%). 85% of bikers are men. 60% of people who use taxi and VTC are women Regarding bicycle users, 79% are men compared to 21% women. Women move mostly during off-peak hours (for personal reasons). Men are more mobile at peak times (for work reasons).

According to a study promoted by the RACC automobile club and the Zurich insurance company, "mobility is a right of the entire population" , since "it is closely linked to the development of economic and social activities such as working, studying, going see the doctor, make arrangements and enjoy leisure time." Therefore, it is added, "it must be ensured that mobility is neutral". Different needs, different routes The study shows that the mobility of men and women is different, both for the reason for their trips and for the means of transport they use. In general, men travel less, but at a greater distance, they invest more time, use a private vehicle more and their trips are due to work and leisure reasons. For their part, women travel a shorter distance, although they make a greater number of trips, they take less time, mainly they go on foot or by public transport and their trips are due to the care of third parties, medical assistance, shopping, etc. Safety on the move According to the RACC and Zurich study, women use public transport more, both during the day and at night. Goodwood goes online with classic and supercar races Motorsport fans have been deprived of the opportunity to watch classic racers go wheel-to-wheel or rocket up the famous Goodwood hillclimb this year, but they can still get their fix of action from home. A musical tribute to the late racing legend Sir Stirling Moss by his rock star friend Mark Knopfler, a 50th anniversary cavalcade of 50 Range Rovers, and more motor racing and supercar action than you can wave a grand prix chequered flag at are among the highlights of the first ever virtual Goodwood SpeedWeek. It has opened its doors to the lockdown public, with a host of motor racing stars, celebrities - and most importantly classic and exotic cars driven as intended, all of which can be watched online. Fashion icon Twiggy, Grand Designs TV host Kevin McCloud, Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves, Radio 2 DJ Dermot O'Leary, US TV talk-show host and car collector Jay Leno, and drivers from the world of F1 and motor sport, are taking part in three full days of live action streamed from the Goodwood Motor Circuit, on the Duke of Richmond's estate near Chichester, in West Sussex. Among those down to part in the racing are three times F1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill, comedy actor Rowan Atkinson, TV presenter and racer Tiff Needell, nine times Le Mans winner

Tom Kristensen, three times Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti, and Emerson Fittipaldi. Goodwood SpeedWeek has been created as an imaginative online response to the coronavirus pandemic which forced the cancellation of both the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival.

The car shows will instead go on behind closed doors and without spectators or guests, but be broadcast to millions around the world, via the internet, social media channels and television, with interactive features which allow fans to participate. Hosted at the Goodwood Racing Circuit and sponsored by Mastercard, organisers say the extravaganza will be 'the most interactive, exciting, adrenaline-fuelled motoring event anywhere in the world'. It aims to use the latest technology to bring together 'the best elements of the

Tips that will make you a better driver Drive tactically When driving in urban areas and traffic, it's tempting to pull right up to the back bumper of the car ahead when it comes to a stop, but there are several good reasons to leave around half a carlength of space. Should the car ahead stop for a prolonged period, you'll be easily able to pull around and continue, instead of being trapped or forced to reverse - which may not be possible if drivers behind you are also too close. While such incidents are rare in Spain, you'll also have a better chance of making an escape should anyone try and hijack the car while you’re stationary. Don't be a lane hog Surveys of the biggest motoring pet peeves often expose 'lane hogging' as one of the most infuriating habits on Britain's roads. You should always drive in the right-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the right-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Look further ahead If you’re staring at the car in front, you have no idea what’s happening further up the road. Scanning the road up to 12 seconds ahead will give you an enormous amount of extra time to

anticipate and react to dangers, and goes a long way to eliminating nose-to-tail accidents where you run into the back of the vehicle in front of you. Looking further ahead also saves you fuel and reduces wear and tear on your brakes because you can begin to adjust your speed much earlier. Use appropriate speed You might not be breaking the speed limit, but you might still be going too fast. If you learn the road signs then you can read the road much further ahead and you’ll be able to choose the most appropriate speed. Of course, if you exceed the speed limit that’s called excessive speed and you can be fined for it. In fact, for most trips, the time you gain by speeding is negligible because of other traffic, traffic lights and intersection – you’ll maybe gain a minute or two. What does happen, though, is that you use a lot more fuel and you run the risk of a fine.

Festival of Speed and Revival.' Visitors who would normally pay handsomely for a ticket to attend either event in person, will this year be able to register for free for the SpeedWeek on a specially created online Hub at www.goodwood.com giving them access to all the action over three days. That includes racing, driving and drifting demonstrations, car launches, interviews and technology workshops, as well as virtual paddock tours, chatrooms, interactive competitions, polls, and quizzes designed to get people involved from the comfort of their sofas. Most – but not all - of the events will also be viewable via social media channels. Rock star and Dire Straits front-man Mark Knopfler is to play a touching live musical tribute to his late friend, racing legend Sir Stirling Moss, on Saturday afternoon in the presence of Lady Moss and the Duke of Richmond. Knopfler played a rendition of Local Hero at an 80th birthday celebration for Moss, and in 2009 was driven by him around the Goodwood circuit in a classic Aston Martin DBR1 race car of the type he excelled in during the late 1950s. For the first time the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy will be contested at Goodwood in honour of the driver dubbed Mr Goodwood because of his prowess there.

Best Buy Car of Europe 2021 award The AUTOBEST 2021 award for Europe’s best mainstream motor will be fought out between seven different brands as contenders for Best Buy Car of Europe 2021 are revealed. A jury of 31 members from 31 countries will now make their final assessments before the winner is announced in December. The seven cars in the running for Best Buy Car of Europe 2021 are: Citroen C4, Dacia Sandero, Honda Jazz, Peugeot 2008, Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia, Toyota Yaris. Organisers of the awards have been eager to continue with the 2021 presentation despite the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. “The record number of seven is a direct result of the great news coming from the industry – brilliant new models deserving a presence in the final,” said AUTOBEST chairman Dan Vardie. The seven cars will be judged by 13 criteria including price, service network, spare parts distribution and versatility. The objective is to honour the best offer for everyday European retail customers, which is why a price cap is included within the criteria: vehicles must be affordable and accessible. The AUTOBEST jury represents 31 countries across Europe, making it the largest independent motoring awards jury in the world. The reigning AUTOBEST Best Buy Car of Europe is the Vauxhall Corsa. An awards ceremony is planned for 2021 where a full set of awards will be presented, including honours for best car company, best design, best technology and best eco tech.

Las Ramblas Golf Society It was a gentle start to the week with a ‘2 ball better ball’. Our President, Dave Pulling, together with Bryan Neal, managed 45 points, which was just enough to see off Alan Douglas and Rachael Leckey, who scored 44, and take the top spot. Wednesday saw the final round to determine this year’s Medal Champion. With the best two scores from three to count it was always going to be an uphill struggle for anyone to catch Nigel Price after his stunning nett 60 in round two. On the day it was Ian Moir with a nett 64 who bagged a few Euros followed by Pete Dunn on 67 and (welcome back!) Mike Brentnall who carded a nett 68. Ian accumulated a few more Euros as along with Ron Luffman and Friedel Knebel he scored a ‘2’ in his round. So, overall Nigel won with 136 followed by Ian with 138 and Pete on 140. Our congratulations go out to Nigel for becomingour 2020 ‘Medal Champion’. Friday and it was a brand new format which meant the winners would become the new record holders. Two from four to count

but all to score on the 4 hardest holes (3&4 and 16 & 17). With 99 points Bryan Neal, John Shervell, myself and a lack lustre ‘Albert’ thought we’d done enough, however, with 104, Graham Murray, Mike Chapman, Friedel Knebel and AnnMarie Weisheit entered the ‘Hall Of Fame’ for this new event.

Quote of the week has to go to Terry Field who commented on his playing partners Mike Mahony and John Dobson sharing a buggy, ‘It was like watching Laurel and Hardy attempting to play golf’! Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Elche CF Dream Derby Friday night was derby night for Elche CF as they took on Valencia in the Martinez Valero. The atmosphere would have been electric and the stadium almost full, but covid intervened. The last time Elche beat Valencia was in November 2013 with a 2:1 scoreline, since then we have lost 3 times, scoring just 2 goals to their 9! Valencia started the game with 7 points from their 6 matches, while Elche also started on 7 points but from 4 matches. The game began slowly with Jorge Almiron's 5,3,2 formation quite evident. The first excitement of the game happened on 19 minutes. Josan #17 for Elche shot a screamer from just inside the box which sailed past the Valencian defenders, clipped the finger tips of the goalie and ended up in the back of the net. Josan was making his 100th appearance for the club having played for them since 2018 when they were in the Segunda B, the 3rd tier of Spanish football. This rocketed Elche CF

up the table to an amazing 5th position in La Liga!!! The second excitement happened at 37 minutes. After some fancy showboating footwork from Josan, he flicked the ball to Fidel who was unmarked just yards from the goal. Gooooollllllll and a 2-0

scoreline. Danger presented itself just moments later as Valencia had a free kick in front of goal, which went high over the bar. Valencia came out after their half time talking too, looking more like a La Liga team. They had a great header opportunity after 10 minutes which was saved as it was directed directly at the sure feet of goalie Badia #13. This attack by Valencia was followed by many more pressured attacks, all of which lead to nothing. Edgar Badia made his 2nd impressive save of the evening at 70 minutes,

which was quickly followed by his 3rd! With 15 minutes to go, #3 Toni Lato split the Elche defence, bringing Badia off his line and scored in an open goal. The next Valencia attack made it past Badia only to be miraculously cleared just centimetres from the line by Elche Capitain Verdu. After a nervous second half and 5 minutes of injury time, Elche CF finished victorious with the 3 points leaving then in 5th place for the one night, before the rest of the games were played. Elche CF's next challenge will be against Real Betis away at the Benito Villamarin in Sevilla on Sunday the 1st November at 14:00. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

So I think we can all agree that neither Aston Villa or Everton will be winning the Premier League title this season, then. Pack away your nostalgic 'it's just like the 1980s' chat. Stop making comparisons between Villa and Leicester - nearly relegated one season, winning the Premier League the next if you've been living under a rock - and worry about how much of a difference Richarlison clearly makes to Carlo Ancelotti's side. Yes, the Premier League table still looks particularly odd - there is no denying that - but it won't look like that for much longer, even if the team who was top after six matches has finished in the top four every time since 1998 Toffees' fans. A weekend utterly shorn of matches for the broadcasters to give the biggest of big buildups to presented the neutrals amongst us only Manchester United vs Chelsea to really look forward to. It even felt like minimal effort went into bigging up the pay-per-view clashes which might have something to do with both Sky and BT hoping to quietly shelve this format given the backlash and the fact that fans are donating money to food banks rather than paying to watch the match legally. What would be a very classy move from either company would be donating the projected revenue from these PPV matches to food banks across the UK but I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. So United vs Chelsea, that was worth the wait. In fact, if they were still playing now Luke Shaw wouldn't have gone on an overlap much to Bruno's disappointment and it would still be 00. According to the current United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they needed 'the fans at the stadium to give them an extra spark'. As far as excuses go, that one is pushing it further than Mendy tipping away a Marcus Rashford piledriver. United need the fans to provide the spark to push them to victory? What about trying the £35m Dutchman who is pretty much doubling up as the crowd at Old Trafford since moving from Ajax? One of the finest moments of the match, and trust me there were not many, was Paul Pogba translating Ole's instructions for Edinson Cavani before the Uruguayan came on as a second-

half substitute. At least, that is what we all assume he was doing. For all we know, Pogba might well have been saying 'just run around a bit, make it look like you care a little bit if you can be really bothered, and then pick up your wages at the end of the week'. Cavani nearly scored with his first touch which was, to be fair, his only touch of the match. According to Frank Lampard, Chelsea's issues were in the 'final third' which must have been a refreshing change if not massively alarming given the amount of money they've spent to have better options in the 'final third'. Lampard did have an additional valid point to the one claimed on the pitch Chelsea would have had a nailed-on penalty if there had been a three-yearold child who had never, ever seen a game of football before in their toddler-based life running VAR on Saturday night rather than a fullyqualified referee staying dry in a studio somewhere. There's been quite a few pundits suggesting that Harry Maguire needs to get a bit of a grip at the moment given (a) his off the field affairs and (b) his horrendous form but he did appear to take their advice a little too literally by capturing his opposing captain Azpilicueta in what can only be described as a WWE headlock as Chelsea took a corner. We've been here before, of course, and we'll probably be here again before today's column is finished, but if that is not being given as a penalty where some others are - well. Actually, credit to Lamps for going here first, suggesting that with any luck, VAR decisions will 'balance themselves out over the season' - that being exactly why VAR was brought in the first place so that these things didn't need to balance themselves out because the refereeing brains trust would get at least one extra chance to get the decision right. It wasn't all bad news for either manager, though. I mean, Mendy might have actually passed the ball into his own net rather than out for a corner. And for Ole, he can take relief from the fact that Paul Ince thinks Pogba should leave United for Real Madrid at the earliest opportunity Ince clearly under some kind of illusion that Madrid base their transfer policy of his opinions and Pogba even knows who is to listen to said advice. A nod of the head also has to go to United's PR department who cleverly let slip that the club could have signed their £60m+ central defensive target, Dayot Upemecano of Leipzig, for a

mere £700K in 2015 if they hadn't spent so much time quibbling over £200K that the deal got called off. There's nothing like getting the United fans in a tizz over the Glaziers and Woodwood once more to distract from the fact that United were pretty poor for 90 minutes. Peppy G did the unthinkable against West Ham - and no, I don't mean concede three goals in the last eight minutes to throw away three points. I mean, who actually does that? No, Guardiola named an unchanged XI for the first time in his City reign (I think, or maybe it was the first time in three years - meh, details). Not that Pep's decision was right, you'll understand - City were 1-0 down to West Ham at half-time meaning they needed to call upon Phil Foden to save the day (if getting a point against David Moyes' Hammers is indeed a saved day). Is it the elephant in the room to suggest that City might not be that good anymore? Have they completely lost their way, a team that can no longer see the wood for the trees due to their previous levels of brilliance? Even Sergio Aguero, once the most consistent of consistent performers seems to have forgotten the script - he was ineffective again, before limping off injured, again. And as for the defending for Antonio's lovely little scissor-kick strike - what's Spanish, French and Portuguese for 'play to the damn whistle?' Post-match, it broke that Eric Garcia will resist 'all attempts to make him stay at City' - based on that performance, I would suggest that 'attempts' should very much be 'minimal' and 'offers to drive him to Barcelona myself' very much to the maximum. Whilst City are apparently imploding in Pep's scientific football laboratory of crazy ideas, Liverpool are slowly picking up pace and becoming the side that blitzed their way to the title last season. And when I say blitzed, what I really mean is spawny wins by the odd goal where the opposition walk away wondering how they've lost it. It does look, however, like King Kloppo will have to defend their crown without Virgil van Dijk for the entire season whilst also having to play against VAR on every single decision for the remainder of the campaign - a champions handicap, if you will. Funnily enough, Chris Wilder felt it was a penalty for Sheffield United where Jurgey-lad wasn't even convinced Fabinho fouled Oli McBurnie regardless of the location. It didn't really matter though, as Liverpool took it 2-1 and Diogo Jota getting many a plaudit. Unsurprisingly, Klopp is 'not surprised' at how good Jota

is - which is a bonus seeing that he signed off £40m+ to sign the lad. Sheffield United plan to lick their wounds by signing United's Marcos Rojo at the earliest opportunity. As mentioned at the top of all this malarky, Aston Villa won't be winning the Premier League. They saw their unbeaten start come to a somewhat shuddering halt as the left-foot of Patrick Bamford saw Leeds win 3-0 at Villa Park. Before the season started, Bamford responded to a tweet from exmanager and current nobody David O'Leary suggesting that Bielsa needed a world-class striker to stay up this season. Bamford commented 'and so it begins' so you would suspect one of the best hat-tricks scored in a Leeds shirt would make him feel pretty good right now. In the weekend where the clocks went back, it was clear Roy Hodgson has set Wilf Zaha's forward as he still manages to convince the Palace star that it is midDecember and the transfer window is almost open once more. Zaha was fantastic in Palace's 2-1 over Fulham - actually, reading that sentence again tells me not to get too carried away with Zaha's performance. It was Fulham, a fixture that could easily brighten up the Championship next season. Palace fans did get an even rarer treat, however - 10 shots on goal from their team in the Hodgson era. This only the second time this has happened, apparently. Wayne Rooney wrote (I know, right) in his Times column on Sunday that Jordan Pickford 'needed to be harder to beat' which is stunning advice to give a goalkeeper struggling to catch a virus right now. Pickford actually could not be blamed for Everton's 2-0 defeat to Southampton, a result that will worry Everton fans given that the only real difference was the lack of a suspended Richarlison. There hasn't been a 0-0 draw between Wolves and Newcastle since '98 - 1898. Judging on the two goals conceded by Karl Darlow and Rui Patricio, they didn't feel like changing that fact. Finally, ahead of Arsenal's late Sunday clash with Leicester David Luiz moaned about VAR giving too much help to some players - a complaint that is on a level with a bank robber calling out the use of CCTV in banks. Just stop fouling people, David. To be fair to Luiz, he did manage to get through 50 minutes without VAR catching him out. before he went off injured. VAR did rear it's head, naturally, disallowing an early Arsenal goal through Lacazette for reasons that

3-0 to Esquina final score. Second up was Calahonda. A tougher first half for Esquina who struggled to convert their chances. Into the second half, Calahonda were tiring with Esquina pressing hard. Big Tony and Colin “Which house will I buy this week” Skinner both scored making it a 2-0 victory for Esquina. After more refreshments, Esquina's captain Bish “chase me chase me” received the 'Sarah' trophy. Saturday saw Esquina coming up against Malaga 'A', which was always going to be the toughest game. The first fifteen minutes saw no goals, but plenty of physical football, with both teams looking for the opener. Into the second

fifteen it was Malaga 'A' who broke the deadlock, with Esquina's keeper too busy picking his nose to see the ball trickling past him. Into the third fifteen, Big Tony saved the keeper's blushes with a cracking goal, 1-1. Four minutes later, Esquina's very own stunt man Ray Wales made it 2-1. The lead was short-lived with Malaga 'A' levelling two minutes later, this time the goalie had no chance. Into the fourth and final quarter, both teams were desperate for the winner. Malaga 'A' saw two players sin-binned for a couple of reckless tackles, one which saw Bish rolling around on the ground as if he'd been hit by a bus! Esquina were awarded a penalty for encroaching the

seemed to be completely different to the ones everyone watching assumed. Standard, and it was foolish of us to think that by the last game of Sunday that they might know their backsides from their elbow. Leicester legend Emile Heskey suggested that Islam Slimani still has a future at the club. Brendan Rodgers clearly disagreed, preferring to not pick a striker instead of naming the Algerian in the starting XI. That's right - £30m signing Slimani is considered that bad that the team would rather not play with a striker than play with him. That's going to be good for the confidence, eh? Oh, and Jamie Vardy scored the winner. Because, you know. He was playing Arsenal.

Walking football Due to the COVID epidemic this year, Esquina Park Rangers Walking Football Teams Tournaments have so far all been cancelled. Not to be outdone, Esquina decided to go on a tour in Southern Spain. First stop was in Almeira against a team called Lubrin F.C. After a two hour drive and a few tired legs, Esquina had to be on their toes from the start. With a squad of twelve players and eight in the line-up, Esquina were raring to go. Ten seconds in, they were 1-0 up with Big Tony starting things off. Playing eighty minutes, Esquina came out comfortable winners, 13-6. A solid performance from all players. After a well deserved drink and food at

the local bar, the team headed off on a three and a half hour journey to Malaga. Friday saw Esquina playing two games. This was a charity tournament for a young girl called 'Sarah' who unfortunately after complications had to have her arms and legs amputated. Esquina Park Rangers donated around 500 euros to this great cause. “Well done lads”. First up was Benahavis, a great start from Esquina who were two goals up within two minutes, with goals from Big Tony and Andrew “I'm not paying my bill” Webster. Benahavis held their own for a while but were no match for Esquina with Big G. Cockburn slotting one home, even though he had his wife's boots on.

area. Was this to be the winner? Big G. Cockburn stepped up to score for victory, but unfortunately his wife's boots let him down. With both teams going for the win, it was Esquina who found the net. For some reason, Bish was hanging about Malaga 'A's goal area like a bad smell. The ball came to him, he whipped the ball across the goalkeeper's area to Big G. Cockburn who poked the ball past the sprawling keeper. 3-2 the final score to Esquina. A great game from both teams. Another trophy for Captain Bish to receive. A great few days football, meeting other teams. Well done to Esquina Park Rangers.
