Torrevieja ‘bomber’ arrested A 50 year old man was arrested in La Mata on Saturday morning, suspected of setting an explosion which all but destroyed an apartment block in Torrevieja early on Thursday morning. The blast caused significant damage to 14 homes, completely destroying the man’s own apartment and the apartment next door. The man was arrested at a pharmacy in La Mata on Saturday when staff recognised him from photos posted on social media and alerted Guardia Civil. Officers sped to the scene, arrested the man and brought him to Torrevieja barracks for questioning. The Torrevieja man already has a criminal record, and is reported to have mental health issues. He had been in hiding since the explosion was triggered just after 6am on Thursday morning. According to reports by neighbours, the man had threatened in the past to blow up the building and made several threats against neighbours over the years with several police reports filed against him. The most recent threat was the day before the explosion; his immediate neighbour revealed having sent his wife and children to stay elsewhere for the night while he himself slept in the living room – a decision that potentially saved lives given the side of his apartment adjacent to that of the alleged bomber’s home was completely destroyed. Investigations are still underway, but security forces believe that the explosion was more than likely deliberate and found an accumulation of butane and campingaz canisters, as well as accelerants, in the suspect’s apartment.

Segura river caused a real catastrophe. Its Mayor, María Gómez, was delighted by the resolution and said that half of the grant money, about 3 million, will go to the repair of the municipal sewage system, which collapsed due to the force of the water and numerous sinkholes appeared due to the breakage of the network. In Orihuela, the City Council will pay a total of 1,242,595 euros in two lines of aid, one of 742,898 euros for paving roads and 499,697 to solve the problems that DANA caused in the Palace del Marqués de Arneva, seat of the City Council. "The Town Hall received damage to the foundations and roofs and with this money we will fix it, in addition to repairing the roads that were damaged," explained the Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde.

Orihuela Councillor questions referral of patients to Villajoyosa The Councillor for Health, José Galiano, has responded to reports that patients from the Vega Baja Hospital have been referred to Villajoyosa. The Councillor said the news, reported in local media, that patients from the local hospital are being redirected further afield than necessary, had led to him making enquiries into the issue. Councillor Galiano said: “Given the impact that it is having on the citizens of our municipality and the complaints from people, I have contacted the management of two of the Health Departments that serve our municipality: the health department of Vega Baja and of Torrevieja. It is not acceptable that our citizens experiencing health problems, have to

travel 100 km away to La Vila, in order to be treated or to visit their ill relatives." Faced with this situation, Councillor Galiano explained that he had “insisted to the Manager of the Orihuela Hospital to prioritise referrals to the closest hospitals in Torrevieja and Elche, especially after the Torrevieja Management has confirmed to me that he has had, and currently has, availability of sufficient beds both in the wards and in the ICU”. The Councillor for Health explained that "the decisions of the Ministry, management and the efficiency of the service to patients and families must prevail, not the measures that are taken due to convenience and harm them or further complicate their situation."

Orihuela Costa sports Cherry picker centre reopens blaze at Cala Mosca

The Councillor for Sports, Víctor Bernabéu, has announced that the Municipal Sports Centre for Orihuela Costa will be re-opened this week. The much-missed facility will once again open its doors to the public after resolving the procedure for awarding the contract for this service to Vectoris SL. The total amount of the contract amounts to 877,337 euros (VAT included) and will last a period of two years and is extendable for a further 12 months. The Councillor for Sports explained that "we have complied with our commitment to offer the best service with all relevant guarantees to the residents of the coast and users of these facilities with their imminent opening”. Councillor Bernabéu pointed out hat the purpose of this service is to provide sports programs, facilities, activities and clubs to the local community. In addition the provider is

responsible for ‘rescue and first aid services in the municipal swimming pool, to complete auxiliary maintenance, cleaning and access control services in the sports facilities and spaces of Orihuela Costa’. In April 2019, the company that managed this service stopped providing management services for the Municipal Sports Centre and according to the government they had to take the reins in order to keep some basic facilities open. Since then, different clubs in the area and users have been able to enjoy the sports activities. The Councillor also highlighted that the ‘Department of Sports has restored the different tracks and spaces that were deteriorated’. Councillor Bernabéu added that this new contract will provide 22 jobs, from maintenance and cleaning services to lifeguards and a technical director.

Fire-fighters from Torrevieja were called to extinguish a blaze that sprang up in the engine of a cherry-picker in Orihuela Costa. The accident occurred midafternoon near to the La Mosca shopping centre, next to the N332. The engine of the mechanical lifting device, which was being used for the updating of an advertising hoarding, caught fire whilst two operators were on stood on the platform. Luckily, they were able to get out of the vehicle before the flames and smoke took hold and neither were injured. The thick column of smoke alerted drivers who were travelling on the N-332 at that time and local residents also called the emergency services after seeing the thick black smoke. The entire team of the Torrevieja-Vega Baja Sur Fire Station attended the incident, which took place last Thursday, leaving other areas without sufficient fire cover. The second closest crew being in Almoradi.

Low key Patronal fiestas for Torrevieja

very substantial part of the population may be vaccinated with all the guarantees in the first half of the year." The campaign will be launched in January and will have 13,000 vaccination points across Spain. At the press conference, Sánchez remarked that in Spain every year, 10 million people are vaccinated against the flu and as such, the country’s “National Health System is prepared to achieve this objective.” In fact, this year, in just eight weeks, 14 million people have had had the flu vaccine. Spain’s so called ‘single vaccination strategy’ has been designed with a group of multidisciplinary experts including "experts from the autonomous communities, the Interterritorial Council and bioethics". The EU has signed five contracts for 1,200 million doses of the Covid vaccine. "Our country will be, together with Germany, the first EU country to have a complete vaccination plan against Covid-19," Sánchez announced. While speaking to the press, the head of government also indicated that since the new state of alarm was approved at the end of October, there has been a "lower number of outbreaks in public spaces." Specifically, he praised the fact that schools are not becoming sources of contagion, which he qualifies as one of the "great successes" of the government.

Torrevieja´s Patronal Fiesta 2019

One of Torrevieja’s biggest events of the year, its Patronal Fiestas celebrating the town’s patron saint, will take place as usual in December but with a very much reduced programme of events. The patronal fiestas are a staple of the winter calendar and honour the patron saint of Torrevieja, La Purísima Concepción. The programme of events was revealed by Councilor for Fiestas, Concha Sala, alongside parish priest Manuel Martínez. Most of the traditional, larger events will not take place this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic – the customary procession, the floral offering at the door of the church nor the incredibly popular paella contest. The concerts which usually take place on stage at Plaza de la Constitución and the children’s entertainment cannot go ahead either. Councillor Sala announced that most of Torrevieja’s primary schools will host, with all health security measures in place, the visit of La Charamita, with Lily, the

Wolf and the Ogre and her troupe of big heads. The inauguration of the Municipal Nativity Scene on Plaza de la Constitución takes place on November 28 and, on November 29, the opening of the Christmas booths of local NGOs will also take place in the square. On the 29th, the Christmas tree donated annually by the Nordic Community will be lit in Plaza de la Constitución. As the traditional children’s events will not take place, two shows will be staged at the Municipal Theatre instead - Frozen, on December 4th, and a circus show on December 5th. The actual feast day of the patron saint is December 8th and on this day, the main church in town will be open for 12 hours with six masses spread throughout the day to avoid overcrowding. Mass times are: 9, 10, 11, 12, 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. After the last mass the vocal group Sette Voci will offer a "Serenade to La Purísima".

Permanent signage against sexist violence for Los Montesinos To mark ‘International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women’ new signage will be permanently installed in the town of Los Montesinos. This will be visible at the three entrances to the town and appear next to the town name. "Our goal is for Los Montesinos to be a municipality free of sexist violence," said the local Councillor for Equality, Ana Belén Juárez. She added, we have joined our name to the legend 'municipality free of sexist violence' as a sign of the commitment that exists in this government to end in our term with an end to physical and psychological violence against women and also to target chauvinisms that lead to abusive behaviours.” In addition to the signs at the entrances to the town, posters will be installed encouraging people to 'Stop sexist violence' incorporating the phone number 016, which is there to assist victims. Triangular symbols, denoting of danger with the phone number and the strap-line 'Take courage' and prohibited signs with the shape of a broken heart will also feature in the campaign. The campaign aims to show the town’s no tolerance approach to gender violence. The UN has reported that since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from

those on the front lines have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified. The UN is calling for a global collective effort to stop it. As COVID-19 cases continue to strain health services, essential services, such as domestic violence shelters and helplines have reached capacity. More needs to be done to prioritise addressing violence against women. The Councillor explained: "We have not wanted the pandemic to distract us from our commitment against sexist violence and even if it is an atypical year in which we have had to redirect the events that take place on the occasion of this international anti-gender violence day where we demonstrate tacitly our rejection of sexist violence, we cannot forget that women continue to die

at the hands of their partners or ex-partners and that violence continues to be exercised against women for the mere fact of being female. Hence, we have decided that this year the slogan is 'Give it courage' and it is aimed at all citizens, in the first place at women who are experiencing this situation of violence in the first person so that they know that we are with them and they should not to allow it and also so that the people who witnesses a situation of abuse so they do not shut up and denounce what they see.” The campaign will also see the distribution of masks in and around municipal establishments so that the slogan 'Give it courage' will appear widely in the town. The local government will also paper the Town Hall with the names of this year's victims (women and their children) so they are not forgotten.

Crime in Orihuela Costa Local political party P.I.O.C. recently attended a meeting at Playa Flamenca Town Hall regarding the crime rate in Orihuela Costa and was left thoroughly unimpressed by the outcome. Present was the Councillor for Security, Ramón López Cabrera, Fermin Rodriguez, representatives of P.I.O.C. and officers from the Guardia Civil and Police Local, plus three residents of La Florida. P.I.O.C President Peter Houghton said: “Quite simply it was a waste of time, the official representatives were not interested in hearing about incidents around La Florida, Via Park III or other ‘trouble spots’ in Orihuela Costa.” Out of 128 available Police for Orihuela and surrounding districts, the coast has 20-25 Police Officers to police at least 60,000 permanent Residents, plus 150,000 tourists in the summer season, approximately only 20 percent of the whole force employed by Orihuela

Government. Peter continued: “At the meeting we requested that CCTV cameras to be installed in areas where petty crime is an issue or residents are having constant battled with fly tippers dumping

rubbish illegally. However, we were told that this is not allowed. However, a CCTV system has been installed in Los Montesinos, so if it can be made legal there, why not in Orihuela Costa?” P.I.O.C. has forwarded its request to the relevant for the Coast to ask for an explanation as the why a CCTV system cannot be installed to protect residents. Peter explained that the party had taken along 30 letters from local people describing crimes

that have been committed, but they were not allowed to hand these over at the meeting, nor were they given an acceptable reason as to why. The Police did make it clear though, that all crimes should be reported to either the Police or an official Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator. Once the new Emergency Centre is completed it will be open 24 hours a day and therefore it will be easier for all residents and visitors to report crimes. P.I.O.C. hopes that in turn, this increased reporting, will entitle the coast to be allocated more police officers to ensure the local community is safer and better protected from opportunistic criminals and organised gangs. P.I.O.C will continue to work with local businesses, associations and organisations to encourage the local government team to provide adequate security and safety services for every resident living in Orihuela Costa.

Drug dealer arrested Officers of the National Police in Elche have arrested a 47-year-old man, of Spanish nationality, as an alleged drug trafficker and for allegedly selling and distributing various types of drugs in Elche and numerous other towns across the province, including the Vega Baja region. The investigation began several months ago when it became known through anonymous tip offs that, a certain individual was engaged in the distribution of narcotic substances, more specifically amphetamine sulphate, known colloquially by the name ‘Speed’, in quantities that would oscillate between 3 and 4 kilograms per month sold across different towns in the province of Alicante. The suspect distributed his drugs by contacting customers mainly by phone and would then travel the same route distributing the drugs quickly, sometimes passing them to other dealers who would redistribute to those

buying on a small scale. The Narcotics Group of the Elche Police Station established several discreet surveillance techniques for weeks on the properties in question, one in the town of Elche and the other in the town of Torrevieja and on the main suspect. In a short time, the information received as a tip off was confirmed and it was established that the man travelled to homes and even to public establishments or businesses in various towns such as Torrevieja, Santa Pola, Los Montesinos, Callosa del Segura, Redovan and Alicante among others to distribute his drugs to clients, sometimes with deals even taking place in the street. During the surveillance operation, police officers began to note the suspects way of working. He would complete a drug deal and then leave the place at high speed, but not before taking different security measures in order to avoid being spotted by the

police, or so he thought. Once the officers had all the necessary information, they located and detained the suspect and at the same time several house searches were carried out. The searches uncovered 1,200 ecstasy tablets, with a gross weight of 550 grams, over 400 grams of substance amphetamine sulphate (speed), 2 magic mushrooms, 5 grams of Ketamine, 5 sets of precision scales, 16 grams of marijuana buds, cutting substances, 2,130 euros in cash and the vehicle used to carry out the distribution crimes. The arrested person was placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction by the Guardia de Elche. The crime will be tried as a serious offence as the drugs found are considered and classified as hard drugs. Some are synthetic drugs with high manipulation and toxicity that cause serious disorders to the central nervous system and the law and legal system is keen to stamp out those pushing them.

Madrid will close its borders for 10 days in early December The Madrid region is going to close its borders during the December holiday week, as it did for the recent All Saints and Almudena fiestas. Tuesday 8th December is a national holiday in Spain, while 7th December is a holiday in all regions except Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Valencia, Galicia and the Basque Country. Under normal circumstances, this would be a time when many Spaniards take a holiday and travel, for example, to second residences in other parts of the country. During the second wave of the coronavirus, the Madrid regional government – headed by the conservative Popular Party (PP) and centre-right Ciudadanos (Citizens), and propped up by far-right Vox – has avoided such perimetral lockdowns for longer than is “strictly necessary,” in the words of the premier, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. Unlike other regions that closed for longer, Madrid only shut down on the

weekend days and the actual holiday themselves in October and November. But this time around, the period in question will be longer, and no one will be able to enter or leave the region between 4th to 13th December. In the meantime, the regional government will be leaving the nighttime curfew of midnight to 6am in place, ahead of the Christmas season. “We want to get to Christmas in the best conditions possible,” said the region’s deputy healthcare chief, Antonio Zapatero. “Madrid is going to continue to be strict and will continue to adopt measures of prudence and will try to

implement measures so that the virus does not develop,” he added in an interview with Antena 3. According to Health Ministry data, the 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants has been falling for weeks, and at the end of last week came in at 297. This is the first time it fell below 300. The current average across Spain is 436.

Forbes' annual guide to best Spanish doctors The latest edition of Forbes España's book Best Doctors Spain is now out, splitting those named into a total of 27 specialist areas and including them based upon merits such as scientific achievements, awards or distinctions earned, their presence in the communications media, the opinions of their patients, their positive impact on the hospitals they work for, their positions of relevance in their field, and their contributions to care, research and training or education. Editor of Forbes España Andrés Rodríguez says: “With this manual, we're seeking to recognise the excellence in Spanish health care in all areas.” Spain has long been among the top countries in the world for quality of service and care and levels of training and techniques in medicine – although the actual care received, waiting times and doctors' knowledge is, like in all countries, a postcode lottery, the standard across the board is generally high. Just like every health service in the world, its actual quality will always be affected by whether it receives just enough, insufficient, or more than ample funding, but in general, if a patient goes to his or her GP with a concern, symptom or issue, the correct referral to the nearest specialist or for whatever tests are necessary will be made immediately, any medication needed and which is covered by the public health system will be prescribed irrespective of the cost to the

service, and nobody is made to 'feel silly' or 'feel guilty' for raising what is, to them personally, a legitimate concern. Spanish doctors usually say they would rather 'waste time' on what turns out to be

'nothing' than not be consulted for what turns out to be 'something', and which could have been successfully treated if the patient had arranged a consultation at the first signs of its appearance.

Prevention is also key in the Spanish health service: Mammograms are given to all women from age 45 to 69 inclusive, although if they are older or younger and request one, will be referred anyway; colon cancer screening is carried out for the entire population from age 50, and even smear tests will involve a full gynaecological examination with ultrasounds, whether or not there is any cause. Although the capital city and its wider region, and Spain's secondlargest metropolitan area, Barcelona, make up the bulk of entries, Forbes doctors can be found nationwide. For Valencia, the Hospital Clínico gains an entry via preventive medicine specialist Dr Rafael Manuel Ortí Lucas, as does the private Quirónsalud centre, via dermatologist Dr José María Ricart Vayà. Two famous doctors not on the Forbes list – a factor that will surprise many readers familiar with Spanish medical news - are Ana Lluch Hernández, head of Valencia University's faculty of medicine and of the city's Hospital Clínico's haematology and oncology team, long held to be one of the country's top specialists in and researchers into breast cancer, and traumatologist, orthopaedic and plastic surgeon Pedro Cavadas, based in Manises, near Valencia airport, who is world-famous for his limb transplants and re-implants, including legs above the knee, arms above the elbow, and even faces.

Whether you’re thinking of selling or are in the process of completing your sale, there’s one thing that most people dread…. Moving! It’s not too bad if you’re selling your holiday home as most times they’ll be sold fully furnished. But if it’s your permanent residence, you’ll have accumulated not only additional furnishings, but lots of memories along the way that need to be boxed up and moved with you to your new home. It’s always advisable to start early and having a sort through what you’ll be wanting to keep and what you’ll be wanting to sell or donate, when your house comes to the market for sale. But I know this isn’t everyone’s favourite job, and putting it off until you’ve found a buyer seems like a good idea. Get an early start and do a little at a time. This will definitely help ease any potential stress of the impending move. But if time is not on your side and you need to “get moving” literally and physically, then start by putting coloured post-it notes on your items. Go through each room and decide which items you definitely want to keep, which furnishings you may take with you and choose what belongings you will be donating or throwing away. Use green ones for “go,” red ones for “no” and yellow ones for “maybe.”

If you need boxes, instead of buying them, go to your local supermarket and ask for some. They’re always throwing boxes out and will be glad to let you have them for free. Failing that, Leroy Merlin at La Zenia Boulevard sell packing boxes, bubble wrap and general moving supplies. When it comes to boxing up fragile items, wrap them in towels and clothing. This will save you money on bubble wrap and paper. Jewellery can slide everywhere, even in jewellery boxes. By threading necklaces through a straw then closing the clasp will keep them from tangling together. Most importantly with any move, is to be prepared for your first night in your new home. Keep one box to the side with all of your immediate necessities within easy reach. Put in the box: paper plates, plastic cutlery, paper cups, kitchen towel, toilet paper and your medications. Most importantly you need soap, hand sanitizer, disinfectant and dishwashing liquid. At least as soon as you open your new front door, you’ll have everything to hand instead of rummaging around going through every box looking for sanitizer! You do know the easier alternative is to pay someone to do all this for you, whilst you sit back and look forward to the first night in your new home! During the past 30 plus years of selling local resale properties, we have the tools and resources in place to help with your home sale. Ready to sell your home? Two animal trafficking gangs busted Guardia Civil dismantled two animal trafficking gangs in Spain this week. More than 300 species of endangered reptiles have been seized, as well as weapons from the Second World War, with a valuation of more than €800,000. The traffickers used “mules” to carry reptile eggs in suitcases in order to transport animals across borders illegally. The investigation led to the arrest of 21 people who regularly engaged in the illegal breeding, possession, trade and trafficking of protected reptiles, including turtles valued at around €30,000. The animals came from countries in America, Asia, Africa and Oceania and were imported illegally and introduced into Europe for breeding or sale. To bypass international conventions for the protection of these endangered species, the detainees made use of falsified documentation or doctored documents of other similar animals from authorized breeders. The investigation revealed that many of the animals were taken from their natural environment, from places as diverse as Mexico, the Amazon Rainforest, North Africa, Australia, South Africa and the Middle East, and were later illegally introduced into Europe

for their subsequent sale or for breeding in captivity. Guardia Civil also uncovered a network of "mules", whose main role was to travel to the animals' countries of origin, and once there, export the species by concealing them – for example, hiding reptile eggs in luggage. In addition, a network of lawbreaking veterinarians has been found that provided the gangs with false documentation, thereby facilitating the

"laundering" of animals obtained through illegal trafficking. Environmental crimes such as exotic animal trafficking has become an incredibly lucrative activity in recent years, involving billions of euro every year. According to a Guardia Civil spokesperson, in terms of organized crime, animal trafficking constitutes, along with human trafficking and drug trafficking, one of the biggest criminal threats at a global level.

Over 400 fined issued to nonmask wearers The Councillor for Citizen Security for Orihuela, Ramón López, has reported that in the last fifteen days the Orihuela Local Police has imposed 400 fines to people for failing to comply with the regulations established to fight COVID19. The fines specifically relate to the mandatory use of masks and the prohibition smoking on public roads without complying with the established distances. "As a result of the resolution of the Ministry of Health that established restrictive measures

for the municipality of Orihuela due to the increase in positives for coronavirus, the Local Police has increased controls to ensure compliance with them," said Councilor López, who stressed that "our hand will not shake in intensifying controls to help flatten the contagion curve, which we are achieving, according to health sources, thanks to everyone's involvement." The Citizen Security Department reported that it will continue working to guarantee compliance with preventive

measures, avoid complancency from residents and stop the increase in coronavirus infections. ‘Because the best prevention that we have so far is, above all, the use of a mask and social distancing’ the Coucillor explained. Finally, Ramón López, has added that "unfortunately, at times there is no other way of ensuring people understand and adhere to the regulations than to issue sanctions. Those people fined for non-compliance with these regulations face fines of 100€".

UK bank account closure warning More information has come to light regarding forced UK account closures for expats living in the EEA. Barclays has now stated that it will be closing all bank accounts (including current accounts, deposit accounts and savings accounts), wealth management accounts and some international banking accounts for expats living in the EEA, if the client can’t provide a UK residential address. According to a communication issued by the bank, Barclays is working through countries in EEA in alphabetical order and writing

to all the expats with a non UK address, advising them their accounts will be closed by the end of 2020. Barclays have provided the following link https://www.barclays.co.uk/ brexit

/eea-changes/ where you will find all the relevant details. In addition to this, NatWest Wealth Management has also started advising clients that unless they can supply a UK residential,

their investment portfolios will be liquidated and closed by the end of 2020. HSBC and Lloyds have said that they are looking at this issue but to date, no decision has been made to close accounts, however, this view could change in the future. To date, only one bank has stated that it won’t be closing accounts and that is Santander. Expats are being advised to check with their UK bank and to take swift action to ensure they are not caught out by the changes.

Canaries migrant surge Spain’s leftist government has come under fire over its handling of a surge in migrant arrivals on the Canary Islands which has overwhelmed local authorities’ capacity to house them. Conservative opposition parties called for Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to resign after police allowed some 200 migrants to leave a camp set up in Arguineguin port on the island of Gran Canaria. The migrants were later bussed to the capital but left there with nowhere to go, prompting heavy criticism from local officials and campaigners who accused the government of improvisation. Rights groups say some 2,000 people have been sleeping at the port for days if not weeks, many in

the rough. During a debate in parliament, Grande-Marlaska said he had ordered an investigation into what happened and vowed to take the “necessary steps” if his ministry was found to have acted in a “uncoordinated” way. The government said the roughly 200 migrants would be moved from Arguineguin to the new camp set up by the military in an old weapons dump near Las Palmas, the island’s capital. The camp is made up of 23 tents which can house 200 people, the Spanish army said, posting images on Twitter of bunk-beds inside military-style canvas tents. Over 16,700 migrants have reached the Canary Islands located off the west coast of

Morocco so far this year, 11 times the number that arrived in the whole of 2019, according to interior ministry figures. At least 500 people died in attempted crossings, according to the regional government of the archipelago which is better known as a European holiday destination. With reception centres filled to capacity, migrants are being housed in hotels left empty this year due to the pandemic, as well as in the Arguineguin port camp, which was only set up to process arrivals and carry out virus tests. “A port is not an ideal place to attend to people with the dignity that they deserve,” Jose Javier Sanchez of the Spanish branch of the Red Cross said.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The pound put in a proper emerging-market performance, alternating daily between first and last position (sometimes jointly) among the major currencies. Over the week it strengthened by an average of 0.2%, adding half a euro cent and one and a half US cents. To nobody’s great surprise, the government missed its last possible deadline for agreement with the EU on a post-Brexit trade deal. The intention had been to present the European Council with a draft agreement on 19 November. Now, in a triumph of brinkmanship for negotiations that began more than four years ago, the target is 28th December, with officials working through Christmas to prepare the treaty, should there be one. Businesses would be less than delighted at the prospect of altering cross-border operating procedures on the fly, with only three days’ notice though. To add to this, Britain’s Prime Minister is isolated as a result of the test and trace process, while a senior EU negotiator has caught the infection. Investors expect a deal to materialise, especially since President-elect Biden drew his red line around the Belfast peace agreement, but they are not unreservedly optimistic, which explains the pound’s positioning. In other news, the UK’s 0.7% headline rate came with a health earning that it is artificially depressed by the temporary reduction of VAT for the hospitality sector. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey was more positive, delivering a speech which included the reassurance that, “It’s not all dismal news though.”

EURO Asides from the political wrangling’s of Brexit, Europe has also been dealing with the stimulus fiasco that is still not sorted. Ten days ago, the European Parliament and the European Council agreed a €2 trillion package. Within days, Hungary and Poland vetoed itbecause they insist they are being unjustly treated for political reasons, and are refusing to back down. The assumption is that they will, because to block the stimulus would be an act of economic self-harm, but it looks unlikely that they will do so in time for disbursements that had been planned for early January. Still, the dispute gave EC leaders something to talk about at their virtual summit on Thursday, which had been intended to focus on the Brexit deal. The euro lost an average of 0.3% over the week and added three quarters of a US cent, with EU economic data not featuring highly in the fortune of the currency. The Eurozone reported that gross domestic product had rebounded by 12.6% in the third quarter after shrinking 11.8% in Q2, with Eurozone inflation steady at 0.3%. National variations included Greece at -2.0% and Slovakia on 1.6%. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said in an interview that Covid vaccines are not necessarily “a major game-changer” for the bank’s economic forecasts. She gave the impression that when it “recalibrates” its stimulus next month the ECB will pump up its monetary support. As always, she would like politicians to provide more fiscal stimulus.

Minister ‘open’ to Covid testing in chemists Spain’s health minister has relented in his refusal to consider testing for Covid-19 in high-street pharmacies, and is now open to considering doing to – especially after the European Union recommended mass antigen testing and training staff to be able to perform them. Although a PCR test is the 'gold star', according to Brussels, an antigen test is much quicker and can detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the organism within 10 to 15 minutes, is highly effective and could be extremely useful in the event of outbreaks in 'cluster' organisations such as hospitals, schools, workplaces and care homes where a handful of people are known positives and all others have to be checked to ensure they are clear before they can come out of quarantine. A petition on Change.org started by a pharmaceutical worker says Spain has around 22,000 high-street chemists', typically several in every town and with opening hours that cover a 12-hour period at least, whilst not every town even has a GP surgery and the larger municipalities, which do, may only have one or two in total, sometimes only open until lunchtime. This means pharmacies have the time and resources to carry out mass tests without encroaching on valuable health service hours, which are stretched at present due to dealing with the Covid crisis on top of the public's usual medical issues – and the pending 'flu season. Pharmacists in the Greater Madrid region, one of the most denselypopulated in Spain, have said if one's local

chemist's is allowed to carry out tests, 'the whole of the region could have one within 10 days'. One of the downsides to an antigen test, as opposed to a PCR, is that its reliability reduces a week after Covid symptoms start to appear, and does not give enough information to allow for a correct clinical monitoring and intervention if a positive result is given. But it has a sensitivity rating of 93 percent-plus and is over 99 percent specific – the highest possible – meaning it is very unlikely anyone will get a false positive or, worse, a false negative. Antigen tests could be useful for those who want to 'prove they are negative' – who have no symptoms and do not believe they have caught the virus, but want to reassure friends and family members before meeting up. They can also detect the virus in asymptomatic people who believe they may have been in contact with an infected person. And their greatest asset is their price: Unlike a PCR, which is only free of charge via the public health service for those with symptoms or known contacts, and costs in region of €100 at a private clinic, an antigen test costs around €4.50 – a price which most of the population would be able and willing to pay in

exchange for peace of mind.

Healthcare.

diagnosis backlogs are likely.

This, of course, only means they are not infected at the moment of the test, but in theory, a person could pay for a test whenever they wanted, even every day if enough were available, enabling them to more or less get on with their lives as long as they took the usual social distancing and mask-wearing precautions.

Health minister for Spain, Salvador Illa, is said to be working on 'detailed planning' with regional governments to ensure pharmacy staff are trained in antigen test use and given full guidelines as to when they should be employed.

Although PCR results typically come through within 24 to 36 hours, where test needs are widespread and carried out by the public health service, they can take longer, meaning more working hours lost and general inconvenience and worry for those forced to maintain quarantine until they get the all-clear.

Madrid had already arranged, at the end of last month, to buy antigen tests for a total sum of €22.5 million from the laboratory Abbott Rapid Diagnostics

Brussels, which recommends mass antigen testing of the general population, with or without symptoms, has said antigen tests – which take a matter of seconds and follow the same procedure as a PCR test – should be used where

A straw poll in Spanish media site 20minutos has revealed that 75 percent of readers are in favour of antigen tests being conducted in high-street chemists'.

Still Using Your UK Adviser? If you take financial advice from the UK but live in Spain, what do you need to think about as full Brexit approaches? 1. The end of passporting If you have a good relationship with your UKbased financial adviser, you may understandably wish to continue using them, despite now living in a different country. 2. The limits of UK advice If you still retain UK investments, a UK-based adviser may be able to continue supporting you there. But if you hold savings and investments with an EU-based institution, from 2021 they may not accept instructions, such as top-ups, from a UK adviser.

3. The advantages of local knowledge As well as the legal and practical implications, you should also review whether an adviser based in a different country is best placed to help you take advantage of opportunities available to you here in Spain. For example: • Will they fully understand the intricacies of the tax regime and how it interacts with UK taxation? • Will they have in-depth knowledge of the local residence, domicile, tax, succession law and reporting rules? • Do they know about – and have access to – taxefficient solutions that offer significant benefits to EU residents?

4. The suitability of UK planning Remember: financial planning that is tailored for a UK resident is unlikely to remain suitable once you become resident elsewhere. At Seagate we pride ourselves on putting our clients first. If you are still using your UK adviser, but would like to know what we can offer, then give us a call. As a firm of advisers that all previously worked for Lloyds Bank in the UK we believe that a good relationship with our client is at the heart of our business. Guardia Civil seize 3300 covid tests Guardia Civil are investigating three people after the seizure of 3300 rapid Covid-19 tests that were set to be put on sale illegally throughout the Valencian community. The investigation began after learning from a Pharmaceutical company that rapid COVID-19 tests were being carried out without authorization at a hardware store in one town and a Chinese Bazaar in another. Following the tipoff, Guardia Civil carried out an inspection at one of the locations, verifying that in the back room there was a bag

with a COVID-19 test box along with different utensils for its use. Some used testing equipment was also found by officers. Officers seized both the used and unused tests, and opened an investigation into the owner of the

establishment for an alleged crime against public health. Further investigation into the owner’s contacts led to a series of inspections throughout the area with over 3300 rapid test kits of various brands seized by officers.

Small towns ‘invaded’ on Sundays People looking for fresh air, open space and a change of scenery at the weekends are invading small towns such as Guadalest, according to government figures. The new powers awarded to government due to the pandemic has given greater surveillance power of population movement thanks to the monitoring of mobile phone positions. The study being carried out by the National Statistics Institute (INE) has been looking at specific population movements on a daily basis since June. The study shows that city

dwellers are moving to small towns and the countryside at weekends, especially areas around Sierra Aitana and the popular Guadalest valley, with some areas showing over 60% more ‘inhabitants’ than the registered population at peak times such as Sundays. Those behind the study say that the figures make sense given that people are in search of Guadalest areas that are aesthetically countryside with figures for pleasing, far from overcrowding November 15th revealing no less and with low Covid-19 infection than 23,169 visitors, mainly from rates. the city of Elche itself and from The phenomenon is also being other parts of the southern experienced in the Elche regions of the province.

Merger talks could create Spain authorises Phase 3 trial of coronavirus vaccine Spanish megabank

A merger between Banco Sabadell and the BBVA would create the largest financial entity on the high street, with over €950 billion in share capital – although no firm decision has been taken as yet. Sabadell was originally founded in the province of Barcelona and which bought out the ailing Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo, or CAM building society, and the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, or BBVA, which started out life in the Basque Country, are two of the biggest banks in Spain at present. The other largest two – CaixaBank, originally from Catalunya, and the partially Stateowned Bankia, the result of the absorption of Bancaja, Caja Madrid and other entities which were on the brink of collapse during the worst years of the financial crisis – are also in merger

talks, although their fusion is definite and imminent. A combination of Sabadell and the BBVA would be slightly larger, and would put the two banking giants in direct competition. Talks are being overseen by the National Values Market Commission (CNMV) which is required to monitor large mergers to ensure no monopoly arises. The CNMV reports that the BBVA and Sabadell have already begun the due diligence process and have appointed independent advisors – JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs respectively, along with law firms Garrigues and Uría Menéndez, in that order. BBVA stresses that, at present, no decision about the potential operation has been made and that there is 'no certainly whatsoever that it will be adopted', nor the 'terms and conditions' that might apply if it

does, in fact, come to fruition. BBVA has already announced the sale of its USA-based holding to PNC for a price of approximately US$11.6bn (€9.7bn), which will generate net capital gains of around €580 million and increase the bank's fixed assets by €1.4bn. Its chairman Carlos Torres and CEO Onur Genç confirmed a 'relevant' share buy-back with the capital surplus derived from the sale of the US holding, and the possibility of ploughing part of the funds into a 'consolidation operation'. Market analysts are not expecting Sabadell to take part in this hypothetical strengthening operation. Nevertheless, Sabadell's shares rocketed by 24.59% on the stock market today, reaching €0.419. BBVA's share price rise was more moderate but still significant at 15.25%, increasing to €3.658.

The Spanish Health Ministry has announced that the drug approval agency AEMPS has authorised a Phase 3 clinical trial of the Covid19 vaccine developed by Janssen, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. This is the first late-stage trial that has been authorised in Spain. In a press release, the ministry said that the testing will follow a “double-blind” design in which two doses of the real vaccine and placebos will be administered to 30,000 volunteers to be recruited in Spain, Belgium, Colombia, France, Germany, the Philippines, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States. Nine Spanish hospitals will participate and start searching for volunteers “as soon as possible,” said the release. The Janssen vaccine is based on a common cold virus called adenovirus, which has been

modified with genetic information from the coronavirus in a bid to get the body to create specific defences without posing any health risk. Only volunteers without preexisting medical conditions associated with a risk of developing serious Covid-19 symptoms will be admitted in the initial stage of testing. An independent committee will assess the safety of this stage, which will be followed by a second stage of testing on individuals with comorbidities that could pose a risk of developing Covid-19. All experimental vaccines must go through three phases of human trials: one with a few dozen healthy individuals to rule out serious side effects, another one with hundreds of people to confirm the results and adjust the

dosage, and a third with tens of thousands of participants to prove the drug’s safety and effectiveness. The European Commission has signed a preliminary agreement to buy 200 million doses of the Janssen vaccine, as well as deals with other pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer. There are at least 234 vaccine projects in development across the world. In the space of just one week, three competitors have reported high efficacy in their coronavirus vaccines: Pfizer-BioNTech (90%), Russia with its Sputnik V vaccine (92 percent) and Moderna (over 94 percent). But this information has been provided by the sources themselves, not through any independent channels, which would require the publication of the clinical trials in a wellrespected medical journal.

Shop Local

CostaBlancaPeople 24th - 30th November 2020

SHOP LOCAL the door for more local hiring opportunities.

In early September the Costa Blanca People launched our ‘Shop Local’ campaign, in an effort to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. We are all seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic but we firmly believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. This is never more important than at Christmas time when many small retailers rely on festive revenue to establish themselves for the year to come. According to studies, when you shop local, approximately 48% of the cost of your purchase is recirculated back into the local economy. When you shop at a chain store, that number drops to only 14%. Instead of taking your hard-earned cash to a multi million euro chain store, think about how beneficial it would be to invest your Christmas spending money in your local economy and help support a small business owner's family. There’s no denying that summer has been difficult for small business owners – while many were still reeling from lockdown, further restrictions made doing business harder than ever. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the Christmas season. If you’re not already convinced, here are a few of our favourite reasons to shop local this Christmas.... • When you shop local, you create job stability for current working citizens in your community, as well as opening

• Good customer service can be hard to find (especially at large chain stores where often employees are more interested in talking to each other or on the phone than ringing up your purchases or helping you find what you need). Some of the biggest perks of shopping local are the personalized customer service and the unique, hand-crafted items you come across. Small business owners don't build their own business from scratch just for kicks - they do it because they are passionate about keeping their products and services in their community. • When you order from a small local business, somebody somewhere does a little happy dance (...ok so we saw that one on Facebook, but you get the idea – you’re directly impacting someone’s happiness). • You’re more likely to find unique, personalised Christmas gifts from local independent shops. • Almost half of small business owners say that if everyone in their local community just spent €6 (£5) extra per week with small businesses it would help to keep them open in the long term, according to The Independent. We know that with social distancing restrictions still in place, online shopping will continue to be a major trend in the retail sector throughout the Christmas season, but consumers themselves are starting to indicate a desire to shop locally both online and in-store. In fact, 21% of UK shoppers think it is unlikely they will venture onto the high street for gift shopping this year and 32% prefer to shop in local stores to avoid large crowds. Marketplaces like Amazon and eBay continue to be very relevant for consumers, particularly in the run up to Christmas as they search for gift ideas. According to advertising agency Rakuten, 48% of UK shoppers are now using online marketplaces as the primary source of inspiration during peak shopping, while 46% take into account referrals from friends and family.

this Christmas

Tips for successful Local Christmas Shopping ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS: The majority of towns and villages have community pages set up on Facebook. Asking about small businesses, gift recommendations or where to shop on your local Facebook page means you’ll have a ton of hot tips on where to shop in your local area. VISIT A VIRUTAL CHRISTMAS FAIR: Many of the traditional Christmas Fairs in the UK and Ireland have moved online this year. Give your area a google and see if there are any virtual fairs set up. And, if there aren’t any, why not consider setting one up yourself? It’s a great way to support local businesses and small local shops – as well as a great way to rally some community spirit, too. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUTCHER: Support your local butcher or delicatessen. When it comes to sourcing your traditional roast dinner, it’s all too easy to head to one of the big supermarkets. Don’t forget about local independent butchers and delis: from fresh fruit and vegetables, to delicious cakes and pastries, to the roast turkey or ham itself, many allow you to place orders well in advance – and there are usually plenty of bargains to be found, too. A quick look around our local Facebook groups here on the Southern Costa Blanca has revealed that many small butchers are putting together Christmas Packs so you’ll get a great bargain too! ASK FOR A VOUCHER: If you can’t find the perfect gift, why not consider asking your small local business to make a voucher for you to give as a gift. This way, you can give the gift of a

beautiful blowdry, a manicure or massage, clothing, a facial treatment...the possibilities are endless. If it’s somewhere you usually shop, why not ask if they offer gift vouchers. It’s a one-size-fits-all gift! How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local Christmas poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours.

Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates - ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Advocates We are looking for advocates for our Shop Local campaign. To get involved, all you need to do is display the campaign poster in your business and social media. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal and tag us in your posts so we can share your business with our followers – this applies to all local businesses, not just those who currently advertise with us. Together, we can ensure that our local economy not only survives this Christmas, but thrives.

Pesetas deadline extended as up to €1.6bn remain in circulation If you have any of the €1.6 billion in pesetas that remain in circulation, then you now have another six months to change them into legal tender and spend them, the Spanish government has announced. The final deadline was originally the last day of 2020, but because of problems with getting out and about due to the pandemic, this has been extended to 30th June, 2021. Deputy president and minister for the treasury Nadia Calviño says the remaining pesetas – which went out of use when the euro became Spain's currency in 2002 – are 'a major issue affecting individuals and tertiary sector companies', such as shops, bars and anywhere else that accepts cash from members of the public. The €1.6bn in old money still 'out there' is equivalent to 266 billion pesetas, based upon a million pesetas being €6,000. Several years would pass between the phasing out of the peseta and the public mindset switching to euros – many expats who moved to Spain up to five years after the new currency was adopted may remember viewing potential new homes with a price in

pesetas, and having to take a calculator whenever they spoke to a vendor. This meant practically everyone could boast that their new house had cost them several million. Any coins that were still in circulation as at 1st January, 2002 can still be changed until the end of June next year, since those which were no longer legal tender on that date had already been

given a cut-off of the beginning of 1997. Peseta notes minted after 1939 can be changed, but those issued between 1936 and 1939 – the Civil War years – need to be examined by experts first. Changing pesetas to euros involves contacting the Bank of Spain in Madrid or any one of its branches, and there is no upper limit on the amount that can be exchanged. In theory, there is no lower limit either, except where the value of peseta coins are less than the smallest

denomination in euros. Sra Calviño calculates that around 45 pecent of pesetas still in circulation will never be changed, because they are either in too poor condition to be recognised as such, or they have been kept by Spaniards or gone home with tourists as souvenirs. It is likely that those who have only a couple of euros' worth of pesetas in a drawer somewhere will not bother to change them, given that their value as a keepsake is more to them than the small change they would receive from them. Likewise, if people's pesetas barely cover the cost of travel to Madrid to change them, they will probably not bother, meaning it is almost certain that several million euros' worth of old money will still be 'missing' forever. Anyone thinking of changing pesetas is advised to check with a specialist dealer or collector first, since many of the rarer or more sought-after coins and notes can be worth far more than their face value – up to €1,000 in some cases. This is not even necessarily the case just with antique coins – some of those fetching up to €100 date back from as recently as 1995.

Irish firm develops spray that provides 99.99% protection from Covid19 An Irish medical firm has developed a spray for reusable facemasks that provides nearly complete protection against Covid-19. The technology, created by Aquila Bioscience and the Defence Forces, removes 99.99 percent of the virus, and is safe to use on sensitive areas like the eyes, nose and mouth. Researchers now hope it will become a game-changer in the fight against the spread of the Covid-19. Aquila Bioscience, a spinout medical technology company based out of NUI Galway, says it's the first time a natural, non-toxic solution has been proven to work so well against the virus. Lokesh Joshi, Aquila Bioscence founder says he hopes the spray “pave the way for safer methods of decontamination that do not cause harm to humans or the natural world.” Development of the technology was funded by the European Defence Agency

and was conducted in collaboration with the Irish Defence Forces. The technology was originally developed to protect first responder s and defence forces personnel from potential biological attack from agents such as anthrax and ricin, Aquila Bioscience has redirected it to make it available to government and corporate organisations seeking further weapons in the fight against Covid-19. Studies on its effectiveness were carried out by an independent laboratory in France which used donor human skin from cosmetic surgeries. It was found to successfully remove pathogens from the skin by binding them with microscopic ‘molecular hooks’. The company already has a protective wipe on the market, and Professor Joshi says his company are now focused on supplying the spray to markets here and abroad.

STEP 2 To make the pastry, mix flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well in the centre, add the oil and 100ml water to make a firm dough. New McDonald’s burger helps Spanish farmers Fast food company McDonald's has launched a burger made entirely with Spanish produce from local farmers in a bid to help them get through the economic turndown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The 'Big Good', as the burger is named, will use goods supplied by 2,000 producers from all over the country – Andalucía, Murcia, Catalunya, Extremadura, Madrid, Navarra, Galicia, Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha. According to the chain, the ingredients chose were those whose producers had most seen a drop in demand in the first few months of the health crisis. These have not been detailed in full, but as well as wheat for bread and beef for the burger, appear to include cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and eggs. Managing director of McDonald's España, Luis Quintiliano, says the move is 'an action in accordance with' the food chain's 'purpose as a company'. “It's to benefit the Spanish primary sector at a very delicate moment,” Quintiliano says, “and, beyond this, it's our duty to society as a company. I believe the current climate is demanding companies to put plans like 'Big Good' in action – to help

reactivate the micro-economy in our country.” Quintiliano urges other firms in Spain to 'join the movement to support the primary sector and small businesses as far as they are able to do so'. It comes at the same time as the chain, worldwide, launches its new 'McPlant' burger, a vegetarian version which is expected to expand to cover a full range of non-meat substitutes for

chicken and the famous 'breakfast burgers' with bacon and sausage. The 'McPlant' will include all the 'classic ingredients', but not meat or fish, in a move to capture the growing vegetarian market and to lean towards 'quality plantbased ingredients obtained responsibly to protect the planet and fight climate change'. It is not yet known whether any of the McPlant range will be suitable for vegans.

Selection boxes with a difference... Cadbury chocolate selection boxes are as much a part of Christmas as falling asleep in front of the Queen’s speech and trying and failing to crack nuts. However, Cadbury has just announced that it’s making a change to all of its selection boxes this year. Before you panic, fear not, because the change it not going to alter that most sacred of Chrstmas traditions or alter the taste of that delicious choccy. In fact, it’s all to do with the packaging and we think it’s a fantastic move. Cadbury is removing every plastic tray from its range of selection boxes, which is great news for the environment. This means that around 33 tonnes of plastic will be saved over the course of December. The removal of

plastic from its products is part of Cadbury’s ‘Pack Light Pack Right’ initiative, which will see cardboard trays being used instead of plastic ones. Louise Stigant, UK Managing Director, Mondelēz International (which now owns Cadbury), said: “Reducing the amount of packaging we put into the world, and making it easier for consumers to recycle our products, is vitally important to us.

“The steps we are taking on our adult selection boxes, which follow the recent packaging reduction on our Cadbury large share bags, is an example of the varied approaches we are taking to tackle the shared problem of packaging waste.” Let’s hope other food and drink brands will follow Cadbury’s lead and help eliminate even more plastic

Most Spaniards support a second home lockdown, according to new poll The majority of Spaniards (six in 10) would support a second home lockdown if it was needed to contain the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. That’s according to a survey by pollster 40dB commissioned by Spanish newspaper EL PAÍS. During the first wave of the pandemic, the Spanish government introduced one of the world’s strictest lockdowns, with residents confined to their homes and only allowed out for essential business. In the past few weeks, with infections rising in some territories, several regional authorities called on the central government to authorize home lockdowns in areas with dangerously high incidence rates of the virus. But the Health Ministry has ruled out such a move, arguing that the measures allowed under the current state of alarm, such as the curfew and restrictions on movement, are enough to lower contagions. The new poll, however, shows that 61.2 percent of Spaniards would agree with a second home confinement if it was needed to contain the pandemic. The survey, based on interviews with 2,000 people, also found that 72 percent of respondents believe that measures aimed at controlling the pandemic should be prioritized, even if they hurt the economy. The poll results reflect a country that is weary of the pandemic – respondents

follow less news about the coronavirus and are more pessimistic about the postpandemic future – but willing to make sacrifices. Most respondents said they had changed their habits to help flatten the curve: they go out less often and do not socialise as much. The survey was conducted between 30th October and 6th November when coronavirus cases were rising in almost every part of the country. The curve had not yet started to stabilise – it was not until after 9th November, when the 14day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants reached 529, that cases began to fall. The poll was carried out after the central government declared another national state of alarm on 26th October – which was later extended for six months – giving the regions the legal framework they need to restrict mobility. When respondents were asked whether they would support a home lockdown, the option was being considered by several regions. Although it appears less likely now, given the improved data, it cannot be ruled out. Only recently, Castilla y León asked the central government to authorise a home lockdown in the city of Burgos due to the spike in cases in the area. But, as with other similar requests, it was rejected by the Health Ministry. The survey also asked respondents about how the coronavirus pandemic

had affected their lives and habits. On the scale of 0 to 10 – with 0 signifying “you have to live, with the necessary precautions, I try to change my habits and behaviour as little as possible” and 10 signifying “I have stopped doing many things, I leave the house and socialize as little as possible” – 25 percent marked 10. The average was 6.7, and more than 80 percent of respondents marked above five. According to the survey, the activities that Spaniards were most unwilling to give up were social gatherings with friends and family (40.8 percent), being able to go outside (36.2 percent), celebrations (24.3 percent) and travelling for pleasure (17.9 percent). When asked about how closely they followed coronavirus restrictions, respondents ranked their compliance 8.9 out of 10 but put others’ respect for measures at 5.4 on average. In general, the respondents indicated that the most useful measures for preventing the coronavirus (the use of face masks, hand-washing and proper ventilation) were the most important. But 75 percent also believed that airport controls were “very necessary” – a measure whose effectiveness is still being debated by epidemiologists. Despite this, airport controls were seen as more necessary than wearing a mask in indoor spaces (73 percent). From 23d

November, Spain will require all travellers from high coronavirus risk areas to present a negative PCR test. The changes in daily life are taking a toll on people’s mental health. Some 18.4 percent of respondents said there have been more conflicts in their home, while 48.5 percent said they had experienced or suffered more of stress, insomnia, anxiety or nervousness. According to the survey, 38.5 percent of respondents had postponed or cancelled a medical test or visit out of fear of contracting the coronavirus, and 54 percent due to the stretched services of primary healthcare centres and hospitals. In total, 30.6 percent said that this had had a negative impact on their health. The poll also found that 3.9 percent of the Spanish population over 18 years of age had tested positive for the coronavirus in the last few months, a figure that matches the total number of infections reported by the Health Ministry. Of the respondents who had not tested positive, 42 percent said they were very worried about catching the disease, and 32 percent said they were quite worried. Growing pessimism The morale of Spaniards is dampening with every month the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread. According to the poll, 61.4 percent feel

more pessimistic and disheartened by the situation. This feeling appears to have grown since the beginning of the health crisis in March, when the large majority of people believed that Spain would come out of the pandemic as a stronger, more community-minded and less fearful country. Now in November, the percentages are practically inverse. The impact of the pandemic on the Spanish economy will be negative and long-lasting, according to 79.7 percent of respondents. Another 15.7 percent believe that the health crisis will have a negative effect but believe this will be passing. The perception of how the pandemic will affect the Spanish economy is much more pessimistic than when respondents are asked about the impact on their own household finances. In this case, only 33.6 percent believe the impact will be negative and long-lasting, while 27.9 percent believe that the effect will be negative by temporary. In other words, Spaniards are becoming more optimistic about their own financial situation and more pessimistic about the national economy. In April, 69.9 percent believed the impact would be negative and long-lasting. In contrast, the percentage of Spaniards who said the pandemic had hardly impacted their finances has risen from 16 percent in March, to 21.1 percent in April and 29.2 percent in November.

Failed launch of Spanish satellite due to ‘human error’ The first Earth observation satellite developed by Spain was lost due to “human error.” That’s according to the officials responsible for the failed Vega mission VV17 to launch SeoSatIngenio, a satellite in which Spain had invested 10 years of work and €200 million. The rocket carrying SeoSatIngenio was launched from the Guiana Space Station in Kourou in French Guiana last week, but malfunctioned eight minutes after liftoff, following the first ignition of Avum – the upper stage engine meant to deliver the Spanish satellite, as well as the French weather research satellite Taranis, into orbit. Eight minutes after liftoff, engineers noticed that the rocket had deviated from its established trajectory, entailing the loss of the mission. It began to “shake” and “lost control,” meaning it was unable to send the satellites into orbit, said Roland Lagier, the chief technical officer at Arianespace, the satellite launch company responsible for the mission, at the post/launch press conference. After malfunctioning, the rocket fell to Earth and landed in a “completely uninhabited” area of the Arctic, according to the European Space Agency. The Vega rocket was developed by the Italian Space Agency and the European Space Agency (ESA),

and commercialised by the Italian company Avio. Following the loss of the satellites, engineers began to analyse the telemetric data and manufacturing specifications of the rocket. They concluded that the cabling on the thrust vector control system must have been inverted when the upper-stage

engine was assembled. This meant that the engines that control the rocket’s course were not working properly. Lagier said the problem was due to “human error” during the assembly process, not with the design of the rocket. Arianespace and the ESA have formed an investigative commission to detail the causes of the failure and recommend changes. “I want to offer my deepest apologies to our clients,” said Stéphane Israël, the chief executive of Arianespace. “Unfortunately, this is part of life in space launches.” The SeoSat-Ingenio was not insured, according to Joseph Aschbacher, the head of the ESA’s

Earth Observation program. The €200-million project was created by the Spanish Science Ministry and counted on the involvement of several Spanish companies, led by Airbus. In a message on Twitter, Science Minister and former astronaut Pedro Duque said: “Disappointed by the failure of the VVI7 mission to deliver SeoSat-Ingenio into its orbit. Nevertheless, this project has allowed the Spanish industry to show its ability to develop complete space systems and win new contracts like the one recently signed for the LSTM mission.” The LSTM contract means that Spain will lead a €380 million project to develop a European satellite to observe the temperature of the Earth. The failed mission is a hard blow to the Spanish aerospace industry and means that Spain will need to continue to rely on satellites from other countries to see the nation from space. SeoSatIngenio was set to orbit at a height of 670 kilometers, passing for the poles, and would have been able to cover the entire territory of Spain eight times a year. The highresolution images captured by the satellite were going to be used for cartography, agriculture, management of natural resources (to check dam levels), emergencies and security.

I don't know what their problem is I was accused of treating my family badly in the past to the point where my siblings no longer speak to me. I have three sisters and they all now say they are no longer interested in having a relationship with me. I still see my parents. My family accuse me of taking money from my parents throughout their lives. They said I wasn’t there when my father was sick and needed daily help, but there were enough people going into him with my three sisters, so they didn’t need me as well. However, I would go in after I’d come home from the pub and try to make my parents laugh, so I feel I’ve done my bit in keeping up their spirits. This is something that my sisters are not aware of. My father and mother have always put me first before the others, and I think this is why my siblings don’t talk to me. I am not sure why you have written to me? Do you want me to suggest ways you can mend your relationship with your sisters? If you were able to come up with plausible excuses to your sisters for constantly taking money from your parents, and then doing very little to help when your father was ill while you were in the pub, I would suggest you could at least attempt to do this and see how far it gets you. However, it may seem your sisters have your card marked, and so there may not be many avenues for you to take which would lead you back into the family fold, but anything is worth a try.

Food companies attack plan to ban junk food ads Some of the UK’s biggest convenience food producers, such as Kellogg’s and Britvic, have attacked a plan to ban online junk food ads.

The plan to ditch online junk food advertising is part of an overall plan to tackle childhood obesity, but food companies such as Mars are against he

move. In a letter to the prime minister, bosses of firms including Britvic, Kellogg's and Mars said they support government efforts to tackle obesity but label the advertising ban as "disproportionate" and lacking in evidence. The government has said it is determined to help children and families make "healthier choices", a move which has been strengthened since Boris Johnson’s hospitalisation for Covid-19 – a diagnosis the UK’s Prime Minister links to his being overweight. The British government initially planned a ban on online and TV advertising for unhealthy foods appearing before 9pm, but upped the stakes in November and could potentially see all online junk food ads disappear. The latest proposal, which is still under consultation, could see the introduction of some of the toughest digital marketing restrictions in the world by the end of 2022. Food producing companies would not be able to promote foods high in fat, salt or sugar in Facebook ads, paid search results on Google, text promotions and posts on platforms such as Twitter and Instagram. The letter to the PM, which has been

signed by 800 food and drink manufacturers and 3,000 UK brands, says food companies have not been given enough time to submit detailed objections. "The UK government is quite correctly committed to evidencebased policy making. However, the evidence base underpinning these proposals is lacking in both detail and efficacy," it says. "Additionally, there is still no agreed definition of which foods the government is including in these proposals. "They are so broad they even capture family favourites from chocolate to peanut butter to sausage rolls." The British government estimates children aged under 16 were exposed to 15 billion junk food adverts online in 2019, versus 700 million two years earlier. However, in the letter, food companies argue that advertisers could use sophisticated online ‘targeting’ tools to aim their advertisements at adult audiences, not children. Food companies also used the letter to voice concern about plans to police how producers describe their products on their own websites and social media channels, saying this would

disproportionately impact smaller businesses - which it says make up 96% of the industry. "Is it really the government's intention that a local wedding cake business, for example, would not be able to share product details on its Instagram account in order to grow its sales?" the letter said. The food and drink industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the UK, worth more than £28bn to the economy and employing almost 500,000 people. Unveiling plans for the advertising ban earlier this month, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "I am determined to help parents, children and families in the UK make healthier choices about what they eat." A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: "We have committed to restricting HFSS adverts [for products high in fat, sugar and salt] on television before 9pm, but we also need to go further to address how children can be influenced online by adverts promoting unhealthy foods. "We have launched a consultation to gather views from the public and industry stakeholders to understand the impact and challenges of introducing a total ban on the advertising of these products online."

How to Act if Another Driver Harasses you on the Road Road rage or harassment can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences. In an ideal world, we would all drive in a safe, courteous, and legal manner, maintaining a safe speed and distance, allowing other drivers to proceed if appropriate, staying calm and concentrating on the task of driving. But we don´t live in an ideal world. All too often we see or experience the same, the bad practices of driving too close, overtaking with hostile and insulting gestures, closing gaps to prevent vehicles from joining the traffic flow in front of us, all of which can be sanctioned with fines, the loss of points and, in the worst cases, even prison, so why does it happen? Driving can create extreme situations that end in aggressive decisions. Even a simple delay in a car not driving off when the lights turn green can be enough to prompt an aggressive reaction, at least according to a study by Preventis, as if we didn´t know, with a survey of 1,000 drivers, that revealed that 40% of Spanish drivers are very disturbed by traffic incidents and only 17% say they remain unchanged. The first and most important advice to avoid being a victim of an escalating incident is to not engage in any way. Avoid eye contact, stay calm, don´t react, and, if possible, leave the road as soon as you can to escape from the situation, stopping and calming down if necessary. Having a passenger note the registration number of the vehicle may prove useful, but not to antagonise the situation, still,

do not engage in any way. You can report the behaviour later to the Guardia Civil, and, if you have dashcam footage for example, you can show that to the officers afterwards, you do not need to engage or get involved at the time, you can report it at the earliest convenience. In the event of the situation appearing to continue, even though you have tried to escape, you can call for assistance by dialling 112 immediately, reporting your position, but still avoiding eye contact and not engaging with the other people involved. The Guardia Civil will take action if they feel it necessary, but in any case will at least have a record of the incident should it happen again in the future. Actions such as insulting other drivers, cutting them up, being immersed in a fight, or crashing into another vehicle and fleeing, are traffic safety infractions covered by the Penal Code. Specifically, the act of insulting other drivers is a violation as established in article 18 of the General Circulation Regulations, "the driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain his own freedom of movements, the necessary field of vision and the permanent attention to driving ... ». The mild insults are punishable in the criminal code with a fine of 10 to 20 days taking into account the personal and economic circumstances of the defendant, and the non-payment may entail the fulfilment of prison. Safety distance is key to avoiding most collisions that occur. In addition,

according to recent studies, 21% of drivers on Spain´s roads do not respect it. The regulations explain that the safety distance is that which allows the vehicle to be completely stopped in case of emergency and sudden braking without colliding with the preceding vehicle, taking into account the speed, braking conditions and instantaneous adherence. The regulations state that every driver must keep a safe distance to stop the vehicle completely in case of emergency without hitting the vehicle in front. For this space to be correct, we must be aware of traffic conditions that can change constantly and that the same references do not work if driving in dry, wet, with high traffic density, so that the minimum distance varies, without forgetting, of course, the degradation of the tires or the braking system. In any case, safety distance results from adding two other distances or factors: Reaction time: The time it takes from when the driver detects an obstacle until making the decision to brake. In optimal conditions it is usually 0.75 to 1 second. Braking distance: The distance the vehicle travels from when the brake pedal is pressed until the vehicle stops. To be as low as possible, we must take the car in good condition, which includes tyres, braking system, cargo, etc. Car maintenance is basic. In normal circumstances, the trick of 'half a metre' can be valid: when we drive

behind a vehicle, we will multiply 0,5 for each kilometre per hour we go. This simple operation will give a safe reference in metres. For example, if we drive at 100 km / h, it would be 50 meters that we should maintain approximately. Another trick is more complex, as we can multiply the number of tens of our speed by itself. That is to say, if we go to 120 km / h we multiply by 12 to obtain 144 metres of distance. As you can see, a slower operation to do it mentally, taking into account the other factors to pay attention to while driving. However, by far the simplest of all tricks is the ‘two second rule’. It is still not an exact science, and may not allow for precise calculations, but the two second rule is the easiest as you simply need to identify a point of reference for the vehicle in front to pass, and then count at lest 2 seconds until you reach that same reference point. Look out for any fixed object, a tree, a lamppost, a bus stop, and ten when the vehicle in front passes it, say to yourself, “only a fool breaks the two second rule”, calmly and slowly, and if you pass the same point before you have finished the sentence, you need to back off further. Remember, in wet weather, stopping distances are at least doubled, and in icy conditions they could be up to 10 times more. On the motorways in Spain, it is better to allow for a minimum of 3 seconds, leaving the two second rule for other roads. The simple phrase, “1101, 1102 and 1103”, spoken normally, usually takes 3 seconds to

Are Dash Cams Legal in Spain? A frequently reoccurring question searched for is "are dash cams legal in Spain?" Although there are data protection issues, when referring to traffic law the simple answer is yes. One point that must be considered is that under data protection legislation you can run into problems if you share the footage on social media showing faces or number plates without permission, for example. That said, not only are dash cams legal in Spain, they can also be extremely useful, especially in providing evidence in the event of an incident, or worse, and can be used by the authorities to help prosecute offenders, such as was the case when a lorry driver embarked on an extremely dangerous overtaking move, the footage was used to track down and prosecute the driver. We must take notice of is that the installation of the dash cam must not interfere with our primary field of vision. The optimum position will depend on the style of camera and vehicle, but if the camera can be hidden behind the rear view mirror, then it will not impede your view of the road ahead, and will not create an additional distraction (there is an example in the gallery at the bottom of the page). Like all devices, such as GPS, mobile phones, they must also be secured and you must not touch them whilst you are driving. In terms of them being useful, dash cams have been in use in many countries for many years, serving not only as a means of providing evidence in the event of an incident, but also protecting vehicle owners against false claims. Russia is one of the countries where dash cams have been in use for many years and in America, a move to make them mandatory gained support in recent years, on account of the value they provide.

Are you prepared for winter? The nights are already a lot darker and the temperature has started to dip, in fact winter will be here sooner than you might hope, and it is important to make sure our cars are prepared. We will look at some of the basic checks we can do in preparation now. Tyres – Tyres are one of the most important safety features on a car as they are the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road surface. Checking your tyres regularly are crucial to safe running, making sure they have enough tread, that the wear is even, and that there are no signs of damage. Remember also to check the pressure of your tyres, consulting your manual or the plate that is affixed to most modern cars telling you the optimum inflation. Also, don´t forget the spare. Make sure that is okay too, and that all the tools are in place. Running a car is an expensive operation but one thing that shouldn´t be scrimped on are tyres. Lights – We are about 6 weeks away from the clocks changing, but you may have already noticed it getting darker earlier. Lights are a necessity on a car and they must all be working. We have spoken about this in length before, just scroll down our Facebook page to read it again, but now is a good time to make sure that all your lights are working. Remember also that you no longer have to carry a spare set of bulbs in the car. That law changed around a decade ago. The reason is that they are not the easiest thing to change anymore, and so it is always a good idea to get a

professional to change them if needed. Brakes – It is important to check your brakes regularly too. If you hear any strange noises when you apply the brakes, such as a grinding for example, get them checked immediately. The same applies if you notice a reduction in their performance. Brakes are a crucial element of the car, for obvious reasons, and so it is vital they work to their best ability. Liquids – Your car doesn´t just need petrol or diesel to work, it also needs other fluids too. Some of them we should leave to the professionals, such as the braking or cooling system, but others we can check ourselves. The oil level should be checked regularly. This is where the dipstick is used. You should do this when the

engine is cold and on a level surface. You should also check the screen wash reservoir, and as winter is approaching you might want to consider a change in the type of fluid, one more appropriate to the colder months. Windows – All windows must be kept clear. The only items allowed to be displayed in the windscreen are the ITV sticker (just the one), the eco badge, and the car share label. You should check the windows for any signs of damage, such as chips. Many small flaws can be repaired, but it is important to get them fixed before they become a bigger and potentially dangerous problem. If any of your windows are tinted, remembering that you can´t tint the front windows, make sure that the tinting is not bubbled or damaged in any way.

How to Deal with Breakdowns The average age of vehicles on the roads of Spain is increasing, which is unfortunately going against the government’s hopes of reducing the age of the fleet, hence numerous subsidies to help older vehicle owners buy new. At the moment, the average age of vehicle is nearing 12 years, which not only means that many vehicles are not equipped with the latest safety features and technology, it also means they are more prone to breakdown. The good news is that most of the breakdowns are common faults, and in the worst case your insurance would cover recovery. However, it’s still not pleasant when it happens, and so we can look at not only what to do if it does, but also how we can help to prevent such problems. If you do breakdown on the road, the first thing to remember is to stay calm. Then, you need to think about protecting yourself and your vehicle. Put on your high visibility vest and switch on your hazard lights. At night, you should also have your parking lights on, if possible. Remember next to place your emergency triangles. These have to be placed 50 metres from the rear of your vehicle if traffic is flowing in only one direction, and 50 metres from the front if traffic flows in two directions. It is also important to ensure that your triangles are not only 50 metres away, but are visible from at least 100 metres, bearing in mind such obstructions as curves or the brow of a hill, for example. Now that you and your vehicle are protected, make a note of exactly where you are. Road signs and kilometre posts are important, or major landmarks. You will need to know your exact location because now you need to summon help from your insurance recovery company, or from the emergency services if

needed. Remember, stay calm and protected at all times. We said that most of the faults are common, and that we would look at prevention as well. Sadly, a lot of problems are caused by poor maintenance, such as with the brakes or suspension. Undiagnosed faults here can seriously reduce the stopping ability of a vehicle and can therefore be extremely dangerous. It is always best to get these systems checked by approved and qualified mechanics at authorised garages, such as Autos Direct in San Miguel de Salinas for example, who provide us with lots of information relating to maintenance, and will have a check of your car in their Bosch service centre. Lights are a common failure for older vehicles. These should be checked regularly, making sure that all lights are working, including brake lights and indicators. Some older cars do have bulbs which are easy to swap, which is one of their benefits, others may need a mechanic to assist. The electrical system can deteriorate

with age and can be prone to failures. Although many faults may require a mechanic to repair, some can be repaired if they are simple, keep an eye on warning lights on the dashboard and if there is any doubt, visit a qualified mechanic. The engine itself can also be prone to failures as it gets old. Sometimes the rubber seals become worn or damaged, so be aware of this, but you can and must check your oil levels on a regular basis and makes sure that there is nothing obviously wrong such as a leak. Tyres also deteriorate with age, and these must be changed if worn down. Damage can occur for many reasons and you can check the tyres yourself, looking for obvious signs of damage such as holes or knocks, and that the tread is even. You must also keep tyres correctly inflated and check this on a regular basis. With a little bit of care and attention, increasing as the vehicle gets older, we can avoid a lot of problems, but if you do find yourself broken down remember to stay calm and always protect yourself first.

Imanyo Golf Society Dave Rotchell Salver This is the sixth year the Dave Rotchell Salver has been played for, the good news was that Dave was back in the fold not having played for a year and what an impact he made on the day. All Level at Levante Elche CF kicked off their 2nd Derby game of the season on Saturday. They were away at Valencia based Levante UD. Elche CF were in 7th place with 12 points after 7 games, whilst Levante were one place off the relegation zone in 17th place with 7 points after 8 games. It was a must win game for Levante, but as always we were rooting for Elche! Elche's 2pm kick off start was shaky to say the least. They were saved on several occasions by the secure hands of Edgar Badia, the goalie, whom the commentators compared to a superhero! He made one of his superhuman saves to a deflection in the bottom left hand corner just minutes after the opening whistle. From the corner, Levante's Gonzalo Melero, a product of Real Madrid's youth scheme, escaped his marker to head the ball home from very close range. Elche continued to struggle, not only giving the ball away way too often, but also failing to create any chances. The start of the second half was less shaky. Elche CF pressed forward securing a free kick from a late Levante foot, only to waste it. Confidence grew and with it more attempts on goal. Oscar Gil came

close to levelling the score with a shot from 18 yards, but it was newly acquired Tete Morente who finally took the honour. On the 64th minute Josema swung the ball in and Tete sprung in the air with his leg extended to knock the ball in at the near post. Straight after the equalizer Elche morphed into defensive mode and Levante snapped into attack tactics. Verdu, Elche's centre back made a magnificent header on the 70th minute which would have made it past Fernandez, the Levante keeper, had it be just a fraction closer to the near post. The pressure play continued and Levante were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty just before the start of the 4 minute injury time. A fair result for the game, but an unsatisfactory one for both teams. Elche CF will welcome Cadiz to the Martinez Valero on Saturday the 28th November for another 14:00 kick off. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Has there been a more Jose-esque performance since the days where Mourinho used to win things? Had he been given a choice of ways to chalk up one year in the Tottenham hotseat, would he have chosen anything other than sticking eleven men behind the Man City dominated ball and then whacking them on the break? Whisper it quietly, but there’s something about Jose right now that tells me Spurs are a lot closer to winning this Premier League than us mere mortals might be able to understand. Take his behaviour in the last week or so - there’s been a subtle shift from publicly slating his players to mischievously using the press to land a few blows on some rivals.

performance up at St James’ Park but he may as well have come out dancing with joy over the fact that his side can now keep clean sheets.

When was the last time you heard him mention Dele Alli? Exactly - Jose knows he doesn’t need Dele to achieve what he wants to achieve so it’s done. No more picking on Alli in public to distract everyone.

Mendy must have more shutouts already than Kepa has had in his entire Stamford Bridge career and if they keep that alongside their rather tasty attack then they could remain in the mix.

Mou went into the clash with Peppy G swinging on how City get preferential treatment from England around players being sent home to put their feet up upon the click of Guardiola’s fingers. Granted, it might help your cause if you stop calling Gareth Southgate ‘Gary’, but you know Mourinho is on it when you start wondering if he actually has a point.

Tammy Abraham has fast become the England striker we’ve stopped talking about what with that Harry Kane being the best nine, ten and whatever other number he decides to play at the moment. Dominic Calvert-Lewin continues to score but Abraham is making it very hard for Lampard to leave him out - and if Lampard can’t not pick him then surely Southgate isn’t that flush for strikers to cut him loose?

As for the actual match, ask Alexa in 2032 to show the ‘perfect Mourinho masterclass’ and you’ll be presented this game. Get an early goal on the break? Tick. Sit back, defend like dogs and rely on the fact that City don’t actually score that many this season? Tick. Pick them off on the break again to take the pressure off? Big tick. Kevin de Bruyne left the match not sure what a penalty is anymore. You can kind of see his point - if ‘the shirt’ is classed as the upper arm and therefore not handball then you have to wonder why City’s goal was chalked off. Pep reckons his team are not good enough right now but also not that far away. Personally, I think he’s not watching the same football as the rest of us. But then, does he need to now he has a spanking new contract to celebrate? Mourinho claims he couldn’t care less about the table, which is easier to claim when you are leading it - albeit briefly. He may well have slept like an angel in his utter disregard for the standings, full of self-backslapping for getting Lo Celso on when he did. Spurs can win this title. And if they do, it will be the greatest sporting comeback since Muhammad Ali’s Rumble in the Jungle with Foreman. To be fair, they’re both doing it in a similar way too. But then, you wouldn’t have to threaten me with too much violence to believe that Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are in the frame too. Lamps was happy with the ‘professional’

Liverpool fans needn’t have worried that Mohamed Salah was unavailable for the nearly-top-of-the-table clash with Leicester City. The way Jonny Evans headed home the opener for the champions showed they didn’t need their Egyptian talisman.

The last time Liverpool were on an unbeaten home run like this, it was ended by Leicester - we can assume Brendan didn’t fancy history repeating itself the way he set the Foxes up at Anfield. “Lads, we know they are good so let’s sit off them and let them have as much of the ball as they want - trust me, it’s a cunning plan”. We’ve been here before, haven’t we Brendan? It’s all very well sending them back out for the second half and having a bit of a go. The moment has gone, the ship has sailed and, one would assume, horses have bolted. Apparently, a 1-0 win at home for Manchester United isn’t good enough - even if it is their first Premier League win at Old Trafford since the days we were just grateful to have football back. Ole wasn’t happy, calling the win over WBA as ‘belowpar’. I mean, come on. It’s a win. You

don’t get many of those, just be happy. However, United did need a bit of help - and I’m not talking about the fact Pogba was unavailable. West Brom thought they had a penalty after Bruno Fernandes seemed to clip someone in the area. VAR weren’t so sure, mainly based around the fact that Fernandes got the ball - but don’t let facts like that deter from the fact that BIG TEAMS GET ALL THE DECISIONS etc etc etc. Sure, it doesn’t help that United also got a penalty through VAR despite the fact there was a clear foul in the build up. Or that Bruno missed the spot kick and got a second chance as VAR noticed that the keeper was on the edge of his six-yard box by the time he saved it. VAR cheated West Bromwich Albion, OK? That’s what Slaven Bilic wants or needs us to believe - or at least needs his bosses to believe so he still has a job by next weekend. Can Aston Villa play away every week? I think they’d probably prefer that as they just don’t seem to be as good at Villa Park. Right now, they are wearing the mantle of the most overrated team in the country with talk even going as far as how Grealish, Barkley, Mings, Kozra and Watkins should all be in England’s squad for the Euros. Luckily for Graham Potter, Brighton didn’t buy into the hype and they came away with a 2-1 win mainly due to a wonderful gallop by Danny Welbeck, reminding us what an athlete he still can be when he isn’t injured which isn’t very often, truth be known. Last season, Villa didn’t seem to get much rub of the VAR green and one went against them here too - the ref got the call to go to the monitor, had a look, and realised he got it completely wrong and took away the penalty. Fulham aren’t too far from preferring that VAR take away any penalties they get awarded. You’d have struggled to think that Ademola Lookman’s effort against West Ham wouldn’t be an absolute shoe-in for the end-of-season awards, but no. Ivan Cavaleiro actually managed to better it - slipping, kicking it twice and sending it over the bar. If you wonder why big Mitro didn’t take this one either, you’ll remember that he missed the penalty that saw Scotland qualify for the Euros. Penalties and Fulham are as good as friends as Fulham and actual defending - given that Scott Parker’s men found themselves 1-0 down

against Everton before the sound of the ref’s whistle had fully died away at kick-off. Calvert-Lewin scored twice but it was the sight of Richarlison back on the pitch (and, of course, I mean literally on the pitch the amount of time he spent rolling around as per) that gave Ancelotti’s men the boost they needed to look half-decent once again. Well, half decent in attack - not so much at the back as Fulham ended up running them very, very close indeed. If you look up ‘second-season syndrome’ in the dictionary, you’ll see that it has been recently updated to show Sheffield United. Yes, overlapping centre-backs was really cool and fun last season but now even West Ham are doing it it looks a bit naff - especially when you are right down the bottom of the table and even Sebastian Haller has scored against you. West Ham have hit the bar more times than anyone else this season, I hear - insert your own retro Bobby Moore and the 60s gag here if you are of a certain age. Still, a 1-0 win for the Hammers means it’s their best ever Premier League start and it’s the first time they’ve won at Brammal Lane in 52 years. Yes, that does say more about how rubbish West Ham have been over the years than anything else. The prematch chat heading into Leeds’ much-awaited match with Arsenal was around how Marcelo Bielsa needs to change how Leeds play if they want to succeed. It’s hard to explain what an utter waste of journalistic time those articles were, given that Bielsa has not ever changed his approach and is unlikely to now even for Leeds. Arsenal needed a performance to quickly refill the bucket of ‘Arteta is the saviour’ rubbish that’s been looking a little empty in recent weeks. And, frankly, they still do. It’s not enough to congratulate them on holding out for a 0-0 after Nico Pepe decided he didn’t fancy a full day’s work. Arsenal were bang average yet again - and this was after Arteta shuffled the pack and put the Europa League team out in the hope of something changing. Leeds managed to hit the woodwork three or four times and would have preferred the Jekyll and Hyde that is Patrick Bamford to have been the good one at Elland Road. If you have endured this week’s column and feel like someone needs this kind of jazz in their Christmas stocking then you are in luck - buy them a copy of Tales from the Top Flight: The Premier League Yearbook, available on Amazon right now.
